Nov 29 2023Barria signed a minor-league contract with the Guardians on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria rejected an outright assignment from the Angels and became a free agent earlier in the offseason, and he'll now attempt to carve out a role for himself with the Guardians. The 27-year-old righty posted a 5.68 ERA and 1.47 WHIP last year -- a sharp decline from his 2.61 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 2022. Barria's deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training, and a good spring could be enough for him to earn a spot in Cleveland's Opening Day bullpen.
Oct 16 2023Barria cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria is arbitration eligible this offseason and instead of non-tendering him later the Angels will remove him from the 40-man roster now. Assuming he rejects the outright assignment, the right-hander will become a free agent after the World Series.
Sep 23 2023Barria (hamstring) was activated off the injured list Saturday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria will wind up missing just over the minimum 15 days with a hamstring issue. Working primarily as a long reliever, he owns a 5.67 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 79.1 innings this season, a far cry from the 2.61 ERA and 1.03 WHIP he managed in the same innings total last year. Jhonathan Diaz was optioned to clear a roster spot for his return.
Sep 7 2023Barria was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to a hamstring injury, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria has been working primarily in a multi-inning role out of the Angels' bullpen and has allowed 30 earned runs across his last 25 innings pitched. Davis Daniel is expected to be called up in the corresponding move.
Aug 20 2023Barria gave up nine runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 2.1 innings in a loss to the Rays in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Angels starter Patrick Sandoval had a rough outing of his own, and Los Angeles was already down 6-0 when Barria entered in the bottom of the fifth. Things got much worse for the team when Barria surrendered seven runs in the following frame, but manager Phil Nevin let the right-hander take his lumps, keeping him in the contest for another inning, during which he allowed two more runs. While the first two knocks the Rays notched against Barria were infield singles, the veteran gave up plenty of hard contact as well and served up three homers. He's been tagged for 13 runs over 3.1 frames across his past two outings, raising his ERA from 3.86 all the way up to 5.32.
Jul 16 2023Barria (2-5) blew the save and took the loss Sunday against Houston. He allowed four runs on three hits and one walk over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria was tasked with closing out a 7-5 lead and was tagged with four runs; most of the damage came on back-to-back homers by Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. Barria is 0-3 while coughing up 13 runs over 11 innings in his last four appearances. His season ERA shot up to 3.77 with a 46:17 K:BB in 57.1 frames.
Jul 3 2023Barria (2-4) allowed four runs on five hits and struck out five without walking a batter over five innings, taking the loss Monday versus the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria gave up three hits, including a three-run home run in the first inning. The other two hits against him led to an additional run in the fourth. He's given up four or more runs in three of his last seven appearances, and he's yielded 19 runs (15 earned) over 26.1 innings in that span. Barria has a 3.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 45:16 K:BB through 54.1 innings this season. He's made six starts in 18 appearances and continues to move between a swingman role and the sixth starter spot in the Angels' rotation. He's not expected to start again before the All-Star break, but it's possible he could be available out of the bullpen by the weekend.
Jul 2 2023Barria will start Monday against the Padres in San Diego, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As the holder of the final slot in a six-man rotation, Barria's role and routine tend to fluctuate. The right-hander didn't see action for 10 days between a relief appearance June 18 and a start June 28, and he's now being asked to pitch on four days of rest so that Shohei Ohtani, who's dealing with a cracked fingernail, can get an extra day before his next start. Of course, four days is typical rest in many big-league rotations, and Barria tossed just 59 pitches his last time out, so he should be fresh for Monday's start.
Jun 28 2023Barria (2-3) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over three innings. He took the loss versus the White Sox on Wednesday and failed to strike out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria had made just one appearance since his June 13 start versus the Rangers -- he tossed three scoreless innings of relief versus the Royals on June 18. His return to the rotation didn't go well, as he yielded three home runs, which accounted for four of the five runs on his line Wednesday. The right-hander now has a 2.92 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 40:16 K:BB through 49.1 innings over 17 appearances (five starts) on the season. Barria is clearly the Angels' sixth starter, which puts him at risk of getting skipped in the rotation when there are numerous off days available to keep the rest of the starters on turn. That's not the case for the next week, and he's tentatively projected for a road start versus the Padres his next time out.
Jun 13 2023Barria did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.1 innings against the Rangers. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria labored for most of the evening, throwing a season-high 93 pitches before being pulled in the fifth inning. The 26-year-old had been primarily working as a multi-inning reliever before being added to the rotation, and has yet to surpass five innings in any appearance thus far. Barria's next start is tentatively scheduled to come against the Dodgers.
Jun 7 2023Barria allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria struggled in the fifth inning, when he allowed both runs and all three hits, but he escaped trouble with a double play. Across his three starts, Barria's allowed three runs, nine hits and four walks with 15 strikeouts in 15 innings. The right-hander has been effective regardless of role with a 1.85 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 37:12 K:BB through 39 innings through 14 appearances this season. He worked up to 76 pitches (50 strikes) Wednesday, so he's getting closer to a full workload. Barria's projected for a difficult road start in Texas next week.
May 31 2023Barria (2-2) earned the win Wednesday, allowing a run on four hits and three walks over five innings against the White Sox. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria has now won both of his starts this season, allowing just one run on six hits over 10 innings. The 26-year-old right-hander sports a sparkling 1.59 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB across 34 innings this season. Barria has certainly made a case to remain in the rotation moving forward. He's currently lined up to face the Cubs at home in his next outing.
May 28 2023Barria (1-2) took the loss against Miami on Saturday, allowing four unearned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one batter in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria tossed five scoreless innings as a starter May 22, but he came on in relief in the 10th inning Saturday. The right-hander's two walks were both intentional and he threw 13 of 15 pitches for a strike overall, but a pair of Angels errors were too much for him to overcome. Per Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, Barria's relief outing will serve as his "bullpen session" ahead of his next start, which won't be impacted. He's scheduled to take the mound Wednesday against the White Sox.
May 22 2023Barria allowed two hits and struck out six without walking a batter over five scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria's mainly pitched as a multi-inning reliever, but he stepped up in his first start of the season. He stretched out to 64 pitches (42 strikes), but the run support wasn't there early enough to put him in line for a win. The right-hander owns a 1.61 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB through 28 innings over 11 appearances this season, and he has past experience as a starter, which was the role he filled for a majority of his first four big-league seasons. This was likely enough to keep him in the rotation, so Barria can be tentatively projected to face the White Sox on the road next week in his next start.
May 21 2023Barria will start Monday's game against the Red Sox, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria has been relatively effective as a multi-inning reliever to begin the season, posting a 1.96 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 23 innings over 10 appearances. The right-hander hasn't pitched in a game since tossing 25 pitches against the Orioles on Wednesday, so he should be fully rested ahead of his first start since August of 2022. Chase Silseth is moving to the bullpen to serve in a high-leverage role, so it's possible Barria makes multiple starts if he performs well Monday.
Feb 22 2023Barria indicated Sunday that he wants to be a starter this season, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria has bounced back and forth between a starting and relief role throughout his career, though he came out of the bullpen for all but one of his appearances last season. Perhaps not coincidentally, he put together his best big-league campaign, posting a 2.61 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 54:19 K:BB over 79.1 innings. Nonetheless, Barria has a desire to start again, and he shed 13 pounds of weight during the offseason in part to better his chances of entering the rotation. The Angels don't have a clear No. 6 starter at this point, thus Barria is certainly in the running for the role. However, the team has a variety of other options to fill the slot and intends to deploy its top starters every six days (rather than every six games), so whoever earns the role could be used more as a swing starter than as a traditional piece of the rotation, per Blum.
Jan 13 2023Barria agreed to a one-year, $1.05 million contract with the Angels on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria made his big-league debut in 2018 and primarily worked as a starter when up with the Halos prior to 2022, but he established himself as a solid reliver last season with 2.61 ERA across 79.1 innings. The 26-year-old should pitch out of the bullpen again in 2023 following his successful transition to relief.
Aug 11 2022Barria moved to 2-2 on the season after he was credited with the win during his three-inning relief appearance in Wednesday's 5-4 victory over the Athletics in 12 innings. He allowed an unearned run on one hit and no walks while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his last time on the mound Saturday in Seattle, Barria worked 4.2 innings as a starter for the first game of a doubleheader. Though the Angels still had a vacancy in their rotation this week, interim manager Phil Nevin opted to give Touki Toussaint the start, while Barria was available in the bullpen. Barria was able to deliver a strong showing in long relief, and Toussaint (six strikeouts over five shutout innings) likely performed well enough to stick around as the Angels' No. 6 starter for at least one more turn through the rotation.
Aug 6 2022Barria (1-2) allowed two earned runs over 4.2 innings and took the loss in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mariners. He gave up three hits, struck out three batters and walked four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria started Saturday for the first time all season, and although he was fairly effective, he did not make it out of the fifth inning. It remains to be seen if he will start next time through the rotation or if he will resume pitching in a relief role. Through 21 appearances, Barria has a 2.65 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB across 57.2 innings.
Jun 8 2022Barria (1-1) was tagged with the loss against Boston on Tuesday. He allowed an unearned run on two hits over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria entered in the 10th inning and gave up a one-out single that plated the designated runner. He allowed another hit in the frame, but that runner was wiped out on a double play. The right-hander was tagged with his first loss of the season when the Angels failed to score in the bottom of the inning. Barria has worked mostly in long relief this season -- this was his first outing of less than two innings. He has posted a 3.18 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across 28.1 frames.
Jun 4 2022Barria pitched four innings against the Phillies on Friday, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Angels starter Chase Silseth lasted only 1.2 frames before being pulled, and Barria was asked to churn through four innings despite his own struggles. The right-hander was tagged for three homers -- including two by Bryce Harper -- and yielded multiple earned runs for only the second time this season. Barria's ERA jumped from 1.54 to 3.29 as a result of the poor outing.
May 17 2022Barria tossed 4.1 scoreless innings against Texas on Monday, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Noah Syndergaard was roughed up for six runs (four earned) over two-thirds of an inning, and after 42 pitches the Angels opted to replace him with Barria. The latter ended up tossing 62 pitches and 4.1 frames in his longest appearance of the campaign. Barria also notched a season-high four strikeouts and kept Los Angeles in the game by completing his fourth straight scoreless outing -- each of which has gone multiple innings. Since giving up three earned runs over his first 6.2 frames this season, Barria has thrown 11.1 scoreless innings, posting a 9:2 K:BB and 0.71 WHIP over that span.
May 9 2022Barria (1-0) earned the win over Washington on Sunday by pitching two perfect innings during which he struck out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria entered in the eighth inning with the Angels down by two runs. The right-hander breezed through the frame and retook the mound in the ninth, retiring all six batters he faced between the two innings on only 23 pitches. Barria was then credited with his first win of the campaign when the Angels put up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk away with the victory. The 25-year-old is enjoying a strong season in a relief role, posting a 1.98 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB over 13.2 innings.
Apr 14 2022Barria allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two in four innings in a 10-5 loss Thursday in Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria entered an 8-2 game in the fifth inning after starter Shohei Ohtani was knocked out early. After giving up two runs in the fifth, Barria settled down and held the Rangers scoreless over the final three frames. The 25-year-old has been relegated to long-relief duties for the Angels to start the season. He has yet to walk a batter in 6.2 innings this season.
Sep 26 2021Barria was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder impingement. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury was initially described as arm fatigue after Barria exited Saturday's start early, but the shoulder impingement and IL designation will end his 2021 season. Barria posted a 4.61 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 56.2 innings this season, and 11 of his 13 appearances were starts. Sam Selman was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill Barria's roster spot.
Sep 25 2021Barria was removed from Saturday's start against the Mariners due to right arm fatigue. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria delivered two scoreless frames before being lifted from Saturday's contest due to the injury. He allowed three hits without a strikeout or walk. The 25-year-old lines up for one more start next weekend in Seattle, though this arm issue could affect his availability for that outing.
Sep 21 2021Barria (2-4) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Astros after allowing two runs on 10 hits while fanning five across 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria gave up a season-worst mark in hits in this outing, and while he was able to limit the damage once again, he allowed hard contact all game long. He hasn't been able to clinch a win since the beginning of August, posting a 0-4 record with a 5.14 ERA over his last eight appearances even if he has given up two or fewer runs in four of his last five starts.
Sep 13 2021Barria didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Astros after tossing four innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and four walks while fanning six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria hasn't won a game since late July, but at the very least, he managed to extend his streak of appearances where he's been able to limit the damage. He has given up two or fewer runs in three of his last four appearances and owns a 3.38 ERA across 18.2 innings in that stretch.
Sep 7 2021Barria (2-3) allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three over seven innings as he lost to the Rangers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria allowed the Rangers to score a run in both the first and second inning while allowing six of eight hits against him during those early frames. Barria then went on to retire 14 straight batters before the Rangers got to him again in the seventh for a third run. The 24-year-old didn't walk anyone for just the second time this year, but Barria has managed to top three strikeouts just twice in eight starts this year. He now owns a 5.16 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB over 45.1 innings.
Sep 1 2021Barria allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two across 4.2 innings in the win over the Yankees on Tuesday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria's 4.2 innings was the deepest outing he's had in his past four starts. He surrendered a pair of solo home runs, one by Anthony Rizzo and the other by Gary Sanchez. The 24-year-old has a 5.40 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with a low 4.9 K/9 in 38.1 innings this season.
Aug 26 2021Barria allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out two across 3.1 innings Thursday against the Orioles. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria was hardly sharp, but he did manage to limit the damage before he was pulled from the game. He was bailed out by the bullpen, as he exited with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning -- yet no additional runs scored. Barria has worked a combined 8.1 innings while allowing nine earned runs across his last three starts. Overall, he has a 5.56 ERA with a 19:13 K:BB in 34 innings this season.
Aug 21 2021Barria (2-2) took the loss Friday, coughing up five runs on six hits over only two innings in a 9-1 loss to Cleveland. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After reeling off three straight quality starts once being added to the rotation in late July, Barria has fallen apart and managed only five total innings in his last two outings. The stumbles have inflated his ERA back up to 5.87, but the 25-year-old's rotation spot could still be fairly secure until an injured alternative like Alex Cobb (wrist) or Patrick Sandoval (back) is ready to return.
Aug 14 2021Barria (2-1) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, pitching three innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander yielded three extra-base hits in his three frames and needed 52 pitches to retire nine batters. He entered the contest having tossed three straight quality starts but submitted his shortest start of the campaign Saturday. Barria has been solid overall since joining the rotation July 31, so the poor outing against one of the league's top offenses shouldn't affect his standing in the Angels' rotation. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start at Cleveland on Friday.
Aug 7 2021Barria didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria struggled out of the gate, permitting two runs on two hits and a walk in the first inning, but settled down thereafter to allow just one more run in the seventh inning. This continues a strong three-start stretch since rejoining the rotation on July 25 in which the 25-year-old has allowed five runs in 19.2 total innings.
Aug 1 2021Barria (2-0) earned the win Saturday versus the A's after giving up four hits and a walk over 6.2 innings. He recorded three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria surrendered only two hits through six frames, and he was pulled with two outs in the seventh after Oakland loaded the bases on two singles and an error. It was the right-hander's second straight turn through the rotation, and he's pitched well in both outings with only two runs allowed across 13.2 innings to notch a pair of victories.
Jul 25 2021Barria (1-0) allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four across seven innings, earning the win over the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria allowed a home run in the first inning to Max Kepler and Brent Rooker. However, he shutdown the Twins over the next six innings to win the game. This was Barria's first win of the season in his third appearance. The 24-year-old has a 6.23 ERA and five strikeouts in 13 innings.
Jul 24 2021Barria will start Sunday's game against the Twins, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria accompanied the Angels during their weekend road trip to Target Field, so it's not entirely surprising to see him named the starter for Sunday's series finale. However, manager Joe Maddon said Saturday that the team hasn't yet decided whether the team will use an opener ahead of the right-hander Sunday.
Jul 23 2021Barria has joined the Angels at Target Field and could start Sunday's game against the Twins, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels are expected to shift to a six-man rotation for now, and Barria appears to be in line to start Sunday's series finale in Minnesota. The right-hander has allowed seven runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out one in six innings across two relief appearances this year.
Jun 21 2021Barria was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria spent two days on the big-league roster but didn't enter a game. Jose Quintana (shoulder) returned from the injured list in a corresponding move.
Jun 19 2021Barria was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Saturday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will mark Barria's third stint with the big club this season. He struggled in his first appearance April 10, allowing seven runs across just two innings. The reliever bounced back in his next outing with the Halos, tossing four scoreless innings May 18 against Cleveland, but was still optioned back to Salt Lake the next day. He's been serving as a starter in Triple-A, so he should be able to provide length out of the Angels' bullpen. Kean Wong was optioned to Salt Lake in a corresponding roster move.
May 19 2021Barria was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty, who has allowed seven earned runs in six innings this season, yields his roster spot to lefty Dillon Peters.
May 11 2021Barria was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria has made just one big-league appearance this season, allowing seven runs in two innings of work while walking four and failing to strike out a single batter. He'll give the Angels length out of the bullpen, with Jose Suarez getting optioned in a corresponding move.
Apr 12 2021Barria was sent to the Angels' alternate training site Monday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria has made just one big-league appearance this season, giving up seven runs in two frames Saturday against the Blue Jays while walking four and failing to strike out a single batter. Ben Rowen was called up to take his long-relief role.
Apr 10 2021Barria pitched two innings against Toronto on Saturday, allowing seven runs on six hits and four walks without striking out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria was recalled from the team's alternate training site on Saturday and immediately got a chance to contribute after starter Jose Quintana lasted only 1.2 innings. Barria inherited a seven-run deficit and retired his first batter to end the second frame and stop some of the bleeding, but he was subsequently knocked around himself and left with the Angels down by a score of 14-1. The right-hander threw 72 pitches in the relief appearance, likely taking him out of the picture for another outing for the next several days.
Mar 31 2021Barria was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels were granted another option year this season for Barria by an independent arbiter earlier in March, and the team will promptly take advantage by sending him to the minors to begin the campaign. Barria had a 3.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB over 32.1 innings for the Halos in 2020 and should rejoin the bullpen mix at some point this season.
Mar 24 2021The Angels were granted another option year on Barria by an independent arbiter Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The arbiter's ruling indicated that last year's abbreviated campaign should not count toward one of Barria's three option years. The decision is significant in that it gives the team valuable roster flexibility. The right-hander can now be moved freely between the minors and majors without being subjected to waivers, which increases the likelihood that he will open the campaign at the Angels' alternate training site.
Mar 3 2021The Angels are waiting to find out whether Barria will be granted an extra year of minor-league options before determining whether he'll open the season on the big-league roster or in the minors, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria made five starts during the abbreviated 2020 campaign, and the organization could elect to have him stretch out in the minors to begin the 2021 season to increase their rotation depth. However, that scenario is dependent on the right-hander having another year of options. If Barria is determined to be out of options, he'll need to be placed on the active roster and would likely come out of the bullpen to start the campaign.
Feb 20 2021Barria has reported to spring training, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria missed the first several days of camp due to visa issues, but he recently joined the team and is unlikely to be impacted by his brief absence. The right-hander should take on a swingman role for the Angels once again in 2021 after posting a 3.62 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 32.1 innings across seven appearances (five starts) last season.
Feb 17 2021Barria will be a late arrival in spring training due to visa issues, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Joe Maddon revealed Wednesday that Barria is one of several pitchers who will be late to spring training due to visa issues. The right-hander made seven appearances (five starts) for the Angels in 2020, posting a 3.62 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 32.1 innings. He'll likely operate as a swingman once again when he's able to report to camp.
Sep 26 2020Barria was optioned to the alternate training site Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old has been in the starting rotation since mid-August, but he'll head to the alternate site ahead of the final two games of the season. Barring another roster move ahead of Sunday's season finale, Barria will finish 2020 with a 3.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB over 32.1 innings.
Sep 23 2020Barria gave up two runs on three hits and zero walks over two innings during Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Padres. He had zero strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old surrendered a two-run homer to Eric Hosmer during the first inning and only worked one time through the order before being lifted for Patrick Sandoval. It was likely Barria's final start of the season, but he figures to be available out of the bullpen this weekend after throwing only 32 pitches Wednesday. The right-hander has a 3.62 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB through 32.1 innings.
Sep 18 2020Barria (1-0) picked up the win Friday after holding the Rangers to two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out eight across 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a successfully long outing for the 24-year-old, who pitched into the sixth inning for the first time this year while punching out a season-high eight batters. Better yet, Barria earned his first quality start and his first win of the season. The right-hander was coming off a strong performance at Coors Field during which he held the Rockies to two runs over 5.1 innings. Barria will look to defend a 3.26 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on Wednesday at San Diego.
Sep 12 2020Barria gave up two earned runs over 5.1 innings against Colorado on Saturday, surrendering five hits and two walks while striking out two. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria was far from dominant in the start, but he kept the Angels in the game by limiting Colorado to all singles and only two runs. While the two strikeouts were his fewest this year, he set a season high by retiring 16 batters. Barria hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in five starts since joining the rotation, though he has yet to factor in a decision. He'll look to get into the win column at home against Texas on Friday.
Sep 6 2020Barria allowed three runs on three hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out six in the win over Houston. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs allowed by Barria came off early homers; he coughed up a two-run shot to Kyle Tucker in the first inning and served up a solo blast to Aledmys Diaz in the second. The 24-year-old righty left in line for the win, but Houston managed to tie the game up in the seventh frame. Still searching for his first win, Barria will have a tough matchup in Colorado on Saturday.
Aug 31 2020Barria allowed one run on five hits and two walks across 4.1 innings in Monday's 2-1 loss to Seattle. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Barria wasn't able to get out of the fifth inning Monday, he was still solid in his first start of the season. Barria has now allowed just four earned runs while striking out 11 through 13.2 innings this season. He is slated to get the ball Sunday against Houston. The right-hander allowed just one run in five relief innings against the Astros on Aug. 25.
Aug 30 2020Barria will start Monday's game against the Mariners, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria allowed one run over five relief innings during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros while serving as the 29th man. After spending just under a week at the alternate training site, he'll return to the 28-man roster to make his first start of 2020. The right-hander has been effective over two appearances as a long reliever as he carries a 2.89 ERA and 0.86 WHIP over 9.1 innings.
Aug 25 2020Barria was optioned to the alternate training site after Tuesday's doubleheader against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 24-year-old joined the active roster as the 29th man for the doubleheader, and he covered five frames in long relief during the matinee, allowing only one run. Barria has a 2.89 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB through 9.1 innings this season.
Aug 20 2020Barria was optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Angels needed to open up a spot on the 28-man roster for Jose Suarez prior to his Thursday start, and Barria found himself as the odd man out. Barria made one appearance in his time with the big club, tossing 4.1 innings of two-run ball in Wednesday's loss to the Giants.
Aug 19 2020Barria pitched 4.1 innings in relief against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria was added to the active roster Tuesday and was put to use on his first day with the big club, hurling 66 pitches and getting more outs (13) than starter Dylan Bundy (12). Barria came on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning kept the Giants off the scoreboard until the ninth, when a trio of doubles netted San Francisco two runs. Given the right-hander's pedigree as a starter, it stands to reason that he'll take on a long-relief role in the Angels' bullpen and be an option should the team need to fill a hole in the rotation.
Aug 18 2020Barria was recalled by the Angels on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria struggled to a 6.42 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 82.2 innings last season. While he's been primarily a starter thus far in his big-league career, he'll be available out of the bullpen for now.
Jul 23 2020Barria did not make the Angels' Opening Day roster. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria's status on the team's staff was murky throughout spring training and summer camp, and his ability to make the club was largely dependent on the health of other pitchers. With Patrick Sandoval likely to claim a spot as the Angels' sixth starter and alternate options chosen for the bullpen, Barria will begin the campaign at the team's alternate training site.
Jul 7 2020Barria is in the mix for an early-season starting role if Julio Teheran (undisclosed) is unable to pitch at the start of the campaign, Taylor Blake Ward of Locked on Angels reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Teheran was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, and his return to baseball activities remains uncertain. In addition, potential starter Patrick Sandoval has yet to report to camp, creating another possible opening in what is expected to be a six-man rotation. Barria struggled in 19 appearances (13 starts) with the Angels last season, compiling a 6.42 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 82.2 innings.
Mar 15 2020Barria was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria's chances of breaking camp in the big-league rotation got a boost when it was announced Griffin Canning's start to the season would be delayed by an elbow injury, but it turns out Barria will not come away with either a spot in the rotation or a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster. The right-hander made 39 starts at the MLB level over the past two seasons, so he should garner consideration if a time comes when the Angels need to bring up a starter from the minors.
Feb 16 2020Barria lost 14 pounds over the offseason, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria shed the weight over the winter following a disastrous 2019 season in which he posted a 4-10 record along with a 6.42 ERA (6.23 FIP). The 23-year-old is hoping to regain the form he showed during a promising rookie campaign that included a 10-9 record and a 3.41 ERA.
Sep 26 2019Barria was removed from Thursday's game against Houston due to a right toe blister. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barria was forced to leave the matchup as a result, and his season is likely over with only three contests remaining. Assuming he's indeed done for the year, he'll finish with a 6.43 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with a 71:25 K:BB over 78.1 innings.
Sep 21 2019Barria (4-10) took the loss Friday as the Angels fell 6-4 to the Astros, coughing up six runs on eight hits -- including four home runs -- over 2.2 innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman all took the right-hander deep in the first inning, before Correa launched an encore in the third. Barria has lost three straight starts and seven straight decisions, but he'll get one more chance to get back in the win column in 2019 when he takes a 6.43 ERA and 71:25 K:BB through 78.1 innings into Thursday's rematch with the Astros back in Anaheim.
Sep 15 2019Barria (4-9) took the loss Saturday as the Angels were stung 3-1 by the Rays, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander turned in one of his better recent outings, but the Angels' offense couldn't get anything going with Mike Trout (toe) and Justin Upton (knee) sidelined. Barria has now lost six straight decisions, with his last win coming July 24, and he'll carry a 5.95 ERA and 70:25 K:BB through 75.2 innings into his next start Friday in Houston.
Sep 8 2019Barria (4-8) allowed two runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts across 4.1 innings while taking a loss during a relief appearance against the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 23-year-old entered in the first after the opener and recorded the final out of that frame. He gave up two solo homers in the middle frames, but that's about all over almost five innings, and still, that was enough for the White Sox to hand him the loss. Barria owns a 6.14 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 70.1 innings across 16 appearances, including 10 starts this year.
Aug 28 2019Barria is not scheduled to start against the Red Sox over the weekend, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Aug 25 2019Barria (4-7) gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four through 5.1 innings to take the loss against the Astros on Sunday.
Aug 24 2019Barria is listed as the Angels' probable starter for Sunday's game against the Astros.
Aug 21 2019Barrie didn't factor into the decision in a 3-2 extra-innings loss to the Rangers during the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on five hits

Jul 23 2018Barria (5-7) allowed four earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two across five innings to take the loss Monday against the White Sox.Barria exited the game in the sixth inning having allowed two earned runs, through both of the batters he walked to lead off the inning ultimately came around around to score. Barria has seen his ERA rise from 2.48 to 3.80 in seven starts since June 12, and in that span, he's allowed eight home runs and 13 walks across 34.2 innings.
Jul 23 2018Barria was called up from High-A Inland Empire ahead of Monday's start against the White Sox.Barria is set to make his 14th start of the year for Los Angeles during Monday's series opener. Across 66 innings, he's logged a 3.55 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 7.1 K/9.
Jul 12 2018Barria was optioned to High-A Inland Empire on Thursday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Barria will heed to the minors to make room on the 25-man roster for the return of Tyler Skaggs (groin) from the disabled list. With the All-Star break looming, the Angels are trying to avoid an extended break from pitching for the 21-year-old right-hander, so he'll stay get a start at High-A. Barria sports a solid 3.55 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with a 52:19 K:BB over 66 innings this season.
Jul 11 2018Barria (5-6) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five through five innings in a loss Wednesday to the Mariners.Barria has not completed the sixth inning in six starts now, dating back to June 1 against Texas. He is 0-5 in that span with 4.85 ERA thanks in large part to seven homers allowed over just 29.2 innings (2.1 HR/9). He'll take a 3.55 ERA into the All-Star break, but Barria's season has been trending in the wrong direction for some time now, and it will be interesting to see just how long his leash will be in the second half.
Jul 5 2018Barria allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one across 5.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Mariners.Barria turned in a strong effort despite recording only one strikeout, instead relying on nine groundball outs. That hasn't been his typical formula -- he has just a 39.8 percent groundball rate this season -- but it was effective as he didn't surrender a home run to the Mariners. That was an important change from his recent starts, as entering Thursday's game he had allowed six home runs in his last 19.1 innings of work, causing his ERA to jump from 2.48 to 3.40.
Jul 4 2018Barria is slated to make his next start Thursday against the Mariners in Seattle, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic Los Angeles reports.Barria had been in line to start Friday's series opener against the Dodgers at home, but he'll instead be pushed up a day in the schedule following Tyler Skaggs' surprise placement on the disabled list with an adductor strain. The Angels will now require a replacement starter Friday, with the newly recalled Deck McGuire looking like the leading candidate to fill the opening if he's not needed out of the bullpen the next two days. The change isn't an ideal one for Barria, as opponents have recorded a .352 wOBA against him on the road compared to a .290 mark at Angel Stadium.
Jul 2 2018Barria will be pushed back in the Angels' pitching schedule a couple of days and make his next start Friday against the Dodgers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.Barria had been lined up to start Wednesday in Seattle, but it appears the Angels are now earmarking that spot for Garrett Richards (hamstring), who could be activated from the 10-day disabled list if the team was satisfied with the bullpen session he threw Sunday. While Barria will benefit from making his next start at home, he'll draw a tough matchup against a surging Dodgers offense that ranks 10th in the majors with a 106 wRC+ over the past two weeks. Barria carries a respectable 3.40 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 55.2 innings this season, but his high home-run rate (1.6 HR/9) and below-average strikeout rate (7.4 K/9) suggest that regression could be coming for the rookie.
Jun 28 2018Barria (5-4) allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four across 5.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Red Sox.Barria's sole blemish came only a solo home run by Rafael Devers, with the second earned run coming as a result of the bullpen failing to strand a runner that was on first base when he exited the game. He continues to get results without a standout skill -- he has a strikeout rate of 7.4 K/9 and a groundball rate of 38.7 percent -- so it seems unlikely that he will be able to maintain his 3.40 ERA and 1.20 WHIP all season. However, he has a nice base to work from as he has exhibited good control -- he has allowed just 2.5 BB/9 -- and has a 13.1 percent infield flyball rate, so it is unclear just how much correction is coming.
Jun 23 2018Barria allowed one run on four hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Saturday. The results were OK -- certainly better than they were in his last outing (six earned runs over four innings -- but Barria was playing with fire with the season-high four walks. He also gave up a homer to Teoscar Hernandez and has now surrendered eight home runs in his last five starts (25 innings). He's tentatively lined up for a road start in Baltimore in next week.
Jun 19 2018Barria (5-3) allowed six runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts through just four innings in a loss Monday against Arizona.Barria was in a hole quickly, as he allowed homers to Paul Goldschmidt and Ketel Marte to fall behind 3-0 by the third inning. Barria has now allowed seven home runs in his past four starts after giving up just one across his first five outings. It looks like the league is starting to figure out the 21-year-old a bit, but despite the recent struggles, he'll take an impressive 3.57 ERA into his next start Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Jun 13 2018Barria (5-2) got the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings against the Mariners. All the damage came off the bat of Mitch Haniger, who took Barria deep twice with a solo homer in the first and a two-run blast in the fifth. It was otherwise a solid, if unspectacular, outing for the 21-year-old, as he allowed two or fewer earned runs for the seventh time in eight big league starts. With 32:9 K:BB and a 2.61 ERA over 41.1 innings, Barria figures to get a chance to stick around in the rotation while Shohei Ohtani (elbow) sits on the disabled list. Next in line is a home start Monday against the Diamondbacks.
Jun 12 2018Barria was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and will start Tuesday against the Mariners, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports. As expected, Barria was brought back to the majors ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday. Through seven outings with the big club this season, the 21-year-old righty has posted an impressive 2.48 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. With Shohei Ohtani (elbow) expected to be sidelined for at least a month, Barria could stick in the Angels' rotation for an extended period. Eduardo Paredes was sent to the minors in a corresponding roster move.
Jun 2 2018Barria was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake following Friday's win over the Rangers.Barria tossed six shutout innings to earn the win Friday but will once again head back to the Bees. The 21-year-old has pitched quite well for the Angels this season, posting a 2.48 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 36.1 innings. Barria should continue to see opportunities in the majors if he sustains his current level of play, though he could continue to bounce back-and-forth to Salt Lake, regardless.
Jun 1 2018Barria (5-1) picked up the win against the Rangers on Friday, scattering four hits over six shutout innings, striking out six and walking one as the Angels prevailed 6-0.Barria has been going back and forth between the Angels and Triple-A Salt Lake a lot this season, but he continues to pitch well in his opportunities for the big club. The 21-year-old right-hander has now won five of six decisions this year -- including four straight -- and his numbers are backing up the strong record, as he's now boasting a pristine 2.48 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, and a 30:9 K:BB over 36.1 innings. If he continues to put up stats like that, he should keep getting opportunities in the Angels rotation. However, his youth and lack of track record make it difficult to predict at this point whether this is a run that will be sustainable as the season progresses and teams get a more extended look at him.
May 26 2018Barria (4-1) struck out four and recorded the win in Saturday's 11-4 victory over the Yankees, allowing four runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over five innings. As many pitchers have before him, the rookie had trouble keeping the ball in Yankee Stadium, but Mike Trout and the Angels' bats backed Barria with more than enough offense to compensate. The club doesn't get another off day until June 7, so for now the right-hander should be able to get off the shuttle to and from Triple-A Salt Lake and stick in the majors for a bit. He'll take a 2.97 ERA into his next outing Friday at home against the Rangers.
May 25 2018Barria was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports.Barria is slated to get the nod Saturday against the Yankees after being promoted. He's made five starts this season for the Angels, owning a stellar 2.13 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 20 strikeouts across 25.1 innings. It's unclear how long his latest stint in the big leagues will last.
May 16 2018Barria struck out seven and walked zero in a no-decision against the Astros on Tuesday, surrendering one run on four hits in seven innings.Barria had an excellent outing Tuesday, throwing 96 pitches (65 for strikes) to get through seven. For the second consecutive game, he struck out seven batters while issuing one walk or fewer. The young right-hander has brought down his ERA to 2.13 and is holding opponents to a .204 batting average. If the Angels stick to their current six-man rotation, Barria would be in line for a start against the Blue Jays in Toronto next week.
May 9 2018Barria (3-1) picked up the win over the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing five hits and a walk over 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out seven. The rookie showed no fear in his first career start at Coors Field, throwing 51 of 89 pitches for strikes while generating an impressive 18 swinging strikes. Barria now has a 2.45 ERA and 13:7 K:BB through his first 18.1 big-league innings, but he'll face another tough challenge Tuesday at home against the Astros.
May 3 2018Barria was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and will start Thursday against the Orioles. As expected, Barria was summoned back to the big-league club ahead of his third start of the season. In his first two outings, Barria allowed three runs across seven innings of work, good for a 3.86 ERA. With Nick Tropeano (shoulder) expected to miss at least one turn in the rotation while on the DL, the young righty could stick in the rotation for another start if he pitches well Thursday.
May 3 2018Barria (2-1) got the win in the Angels' 12-3 victory over the Orioles on Thursday, giving up two earned runs on four hits over six innings, striking out two and walking two.Barria was called back up from Triple-A before this start and he delivered a solid outing. While he might not have a spot in the Angels' rotation after Nick Tropeano (shoulder) returns from the disabled list, he's got a respectable 3.46 ERA over his 13 innings of big-league work this season and the 21-year-old probably did enough to earn the nod again with Tropeano standing to miss at least one more start.
May 2 2018Barria will start Thursday against the Orioles, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. With Shohei Ohtani's start being pushed back to the weekend due to a minor ankle injury, Barria will rejoin the Angels to make his third big-league start this season. The 21-year-old lasted just two innings in his previous start, but he still owns a serviceable 3.86 ERA through seven innings. He could stick in the rotation for another start if he pitches well Thursday, as Nick Tropeano (shoulder) is expected to miss at least one turn in the rotation while on the DL.
Apr 22 2018Barria was sent back to Triple-A Salt Lake following Sunday's loss to the Giants, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Barria lasted just two innings during Sunday's start, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one. As expected, he was optioned to Triple-A following the game, seeing as the Angels won't require a sixth starter until May 6 in Seattle. Through two starts, Barria is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and four strikeouts across seven innings.
Apr 22 2018Barria was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in advance of his scheduled start Sunday against the Giants, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.Barria earned a second turn as the Angels' No. 6 starter after an excellent showing in his MLB debut April 11, when he limited the Rangers to one run on one hit and three walks en route to the victory. Due to an off day April 26, the Angels won't require a sixth starter again until May 6 in Seattle, so there's a good possibility that Barria will be demoted following Sunday's turn. That said, Barria could make a decent streaming option in deeper formats while pitching at home against a Giants offense that has produced a collective 81 wRC+ for the season, which ranks 25th in baseball.
Apr 11 2018Barria was recalled prior to Wednesday's start against Texas, TR Sullivan of MLB.com reports. The club has yet to announce its corresponding move but Barria is set to make his major-league debut against the Rangers in Wednesday's series finale. Over the course of 141.2 innings of work in the minors last season, the right-hander logged an impressive 2.80 ERA and 1.07 WHIP split between three levels.
Apr 9 2018Barria will be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday to start against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.Barria will be given the opportunity to make his major-league debut Wednesday, as the Angels will require another starter with J.C. Ramirez (forearm) and Matt Shoemaker (elbow) both landing on the disabled list last week. The 21-year-old posted a 2.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 117:31 K:BB across 141.2 innings between three levels in 2017. While Barria is one of the team's better pitching prospects, it may be unwise to expect much from him in his debut, especially considering he has registered just 16.2 innings above Double-A in his professional career.
Nov 20 2017Barria was added to the Angels' 40-man roster Monday.Barria has established himself as a legitimate pitching prospect with his performance over the past two seasons, so it only makes sense that the Angels would want to protect him from next month's Rule 5 draft. The right-hander advanced to Triple-A Salt Lake for a trio of starts before the end of 2017 and finished with a 2.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 117:31 K:BB in 141.2 total innings across three levels. He could be in the mix for starts in the first half of 2018.
Aug 22 2017Barria was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday. This has been an outstanding season for the 21-year-old righty, as he started the year at High-A and will finish the year pitching in the Pacific Coast League. Barria notched a 2.83 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 104 strikeouts in 127 innings across High-A and Double-A. He is not seen as a high-upside pitching prospect, but now that he is close to the big leagues, he should be on the radar of owners in most dynasty leagues, as he could produce like a No. 4 starter as soon as next summer.
