May 20 2024Lauer signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Monday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander opted out of his minor-league pact with the Pirates last week and didn't take long to latch on with a new organization. Lauer had a 5.52 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB across 29.1 innings at Triple-A Indianapolis, and he may need to post better results for Houston's Triple-A affiliate in Sugar Land in order to receive a look in the big leagues. His contract includes opt-outs for July 1 and August 1 if he's not on the major-league roster.
May 16 2024The Pirates released Lauer on Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer had an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract with Pittsburgh and has chosen to exercise it. The left-hander posted a 5.56 ERA over 29.1 innings during his time with Triple-A Indianapolis, but his 37:11 K:BB was more promising. Lauer, 28, shouldn't have trouble landing another gig elsewhere, although it's possible he'll have to accept another minor-league deal.
Mar 7 2024Lauer was signed by the Pirates on a minor-league deal Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer elected free agency in October after the Brewers did not want to give him a raise in arbitration. In 2023, the lefty posted a 6.56 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 46.2 innings. The 28-year-old has had better years, having posted a 3.84 ERA over 288.1 innings during his time in Milwaukee from 2020-22.
Oct 23 2023Lauer elected free agency Monday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers understandably didn't want to give Lauer a raise via arbitration after he posted a 6.56 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 46.2 innings this season. He's just 28 years old and posted a 3.84 ERA and 286:109 K:BB over 288.1 innings for Milwaukee from 2020-22, so the left-hander shouldn't have trouble finding another opportunity elsewhere.
Oct 20 2023Lauer cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Nashville, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer struggled to get things going with the Brewers in 2023, accumulating a 6.56 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over 46.2 innings in 10 appearances. He reserves the right to elect free agency, but other teams will likely have to see signs of improvement before giving Lauer another shot in a big-league rotation.
Oct 1 2023Lauer was optioned to the Arizona Complez League on Sunday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was promoted Saturday for his first appearance in the big leagues since May, but he was tagged for three homers and eight earned runs by the Cubs. The left-hander began the season in the starting rotation but is a potential DFA candidate this offseason after he posted a 6.56 ERA over 46.2 innings for the Brewers this year.
Sep 30 2023The Brewers recalled Lauer from Triple-A Nashville to start Saturday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer will be making his first start in the majors since May 20, when he gave up six earned runs over three innings against the Rays. The 28-year-old southpaw put up a 5.48 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with the Brewers before being sent down to Nashville, where he recorded similar numbers. Though his numbers may not warrant a promotion, Lauer's arrival will help the Brewers keep Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta fresh for the postseason. Clayton Andrews and Caleb Boushley were both optioned to the Arizona Complex League in corresponding moves.
Jun 13 2023Milwaukee reinstated Lauer (shoulder) off the 10-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. "We want to get him right, to be healthy and be a contributor," Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was placed on the 15-day injured list May 22 with an impingement in his non-throwing shoulder, and the southpaw struggled in his rehab start Sunday with Nashville; allowing seven runs (five earned) in two innings. Lauer was an effective part of the Milwaukee rotation in 2022, but he'll remain in the PCL until the Brewers deem him worthy of a roster spot again this summer.
Jun 11 2023Lauer (shoulder) was charged with seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out one batter in a two-inning rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Nashville. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer needed 69 pitches just to record his six outs and has now been battered for 11 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in his first two rehab starts with Nashville. Though Lauer hasn't suffered from any reported setbacks while out on the farm, the poor results he's shown thus far could lead the Brewers to move him to the bullpen whenever he's deemed ready to return from the 15-day injured list.
Jun 4 2023Lauer (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer expects to make a couple of outings with Nashville before he'll be ready to return from the 15-day injured list, according to McCalvy . The left-hander was placed on the IL in May 22 due to an impingement of his non-throwing shoulder and logged a 5.48 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 42.2 innings across nine appearances (eight starts) prior to being deactivated.
May 22 2023Milwaukee placed Lauer on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If there's good news here, it's that the injury is to Lauer's non-throwing shoulder. Still, it's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined, and the Brewers' rotation depth had already been hit hard by injuries. Lauer had been slated to start Thursday against the Giants, but Milwaukee will have to find someone else to take the ball that day.
May 20 2023Lauer (4-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks over three innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer had troubles with the long ball Saturday, giving up homers to Harold Ramirez in the first, Yandy Diaz in the second and Christian Bethancourt in the fourth to tie his season high in runs allowed. Saturday's outing also marked Lauer's third straight appearance giving up multiple home runs while being the first time all season he struck out less than four batters. Though Lauer struggled with one of the top offenses in baseball, he should have a much easier time in his next projected start when he takes on the Giants, who strike out 9.6 times per game.
May 15 2023Lauer (4-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Royals. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer took over for Colin Rea with two outs in the fourth and was able to pitch the rest of the way. He only gave up two hits, both of which went for solo home runs, and tied his season high with six strikeouts. Overall, Lauer had a nice bounce back performance after having given up 12 runs (seven earned) over his last 11.1 innings heading into Sunday. The team could opt to move him back into the starting rotation after he had a better showing than Rea or potentially operate the two as a tandem moving forward, although nothing yet has indicated a change will be made. Lauer now sits at a 4.54 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 39:18 K:BB over 39.2 innings thus far.
May 13 2023Lauer will pitch out of the bullpen for now and is available for Saturday's game against the Royals, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer has struggled over his last three starts, with the left-hander not getting out of the fifth inning and allowing at least four runs in each of those outings. It appears Colin Rea will take Lauer's place in the rotation with Rea now scheduled to start Saturday against Kansas City. Lauer could return to the rotation at some point, but he won't provide much fantasy relevance in a multi-inning relief role.
May 9 2023Lauer (3-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer gave up a solo shot on the second pitch of the game to Mookie Betts. After his first time through the order, the Brewers trailed 3-0. Lauer picked wins in three of his first four starts, but he has not gotten through five innings in his last three outings. He's allowed 12 runs in his last three starts, though just seven of them are earned. Lauer's ERA sits at 4.72 with 33 strikeouts in 34.1 innings after seven starts.
May 4 2023Lauer (3-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs (none earned) on four hits and four walks over 4.2 innings against Colorado. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was victimized by shoddy defense, as Milwaukee third baseman Mike Brosseau made a costly error that led to Colorado's four-run fourth inning. Despite the loss, this was actually the southpaw's first time not allowing any earned runs in a start this year. The 27-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Dodgers at home in his next start.
May 2 2023Lauer (finger) is listed as the Brewers' probable starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer tore the nail on his left middle finger during his most recent start last Tuesday against the Tigers, but the issue won't prevent him from missing a turn through the rotation. Instead, the Brewers are just opting to give him an additional day off between starts, as Freddy Peralta has leapfrogged Lauer in the pitching schedule and will take the hill for the series opener in Colorado on Tuesday. Through five starts this season, Lauer has gone 3-2 with a 5.19 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 26 innings.
Apr 2 2023Lauer (1-0) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Cubs. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer posted a 3.69 ERA with a 23.8 percent strikeout rate over 29 starts for Milwaukee last year en route to a career-high 11 wins, and he picked up where he left off during his 2023 debut Sunday. He fell just short of the quality start since he was at 89 pitches after 5.1 innings, but it was an encouraging outing to begin the regular season. The left-hander projects to make his next start at home against the Cardinals on Saturday.
Jan 13 2023Lauer agreed to a one-year, $5.075 million contract with the Brewers on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer delivered another solid season for the Brewers in 2022 with a 3.69 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 157:59 K:BB across a career-high 158.2 innings. The left-hander should open 2023 as Milwaukee's No. 4 starter behind Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta.
Oct 4 2022Lauer (11-7) earned the win Tuesday, allowing no runs on no hits and four walks over six innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his last start of the season, Lauer turned one of his best, as he did not allow a hit for the first time in 2022. Despite the no-hit possibility, the southpaw was pulled after six innings, as he walked four batters and his pitch count ran up to 97. Lauer ended the season hot, allowing zero or one earned runs over at least five innings in each of his final five starts.
Sep 29 2022Lauer did not factor into the decision against the Marlins Thursday, firing five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and just one hit allowed. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After needing 66 pitches to get through 2.2 innings in his return from the IL in his last start, Lauer bounced back in a big way by holding Miami to one hit. He needed just 71 pitches to complete five innings and record nine strikeouts, his highest total since July 4. The bullpen went on to blow the game and cost Lauer the win, but the strong start was an encouraging sign for the southpaw. He will take a 3.83 ERA into his next start.
Sep 23 2022Lauer allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over 2.2 innings against Cincinnati on Friday. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer threw 36 of 66 pitches for strikes in his return from the injured list Friday. The Brewers got the win but he failed to complete the third inning for the second straight outing. Lauer's season ERA now sits at 3.96 with a 141:55 K:BB through 27 starts. He should be able to go further in his next start, which is expected to be at home against Miami next week.
Sep 20 2022Lauer (elbow) will start Friday against the Reds, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday is the first day Lauer is eligible to return, so it sounds like he is doing quite well physically. He is throwing a second bullpen session Tuesday in preparation for his first start since Sept. 7. While he will only miss a little more than two weeks, Lauer may not be ready to go deep enough to qualify for the win.
Sep 19 2022Lauer (elbow) is a candidate to make a short start Friday against the Reds, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers have yet to confirm their pitching plans for later in the week, but McCalvy notes that Lauer could be activated when first eligible Friday. This would give the southpaw a chance to ease back into action while having Jason Alexander available to serve as the primary pitcher if needed. Lauer has been on the 15-day injured list since Sept. 10 due to left elbow inflammation.
Sep 17 2022Lauer (elbow) threw approximately 30 pitches during a bullpen session Saturday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer threw off flat ground Wednesday and was cleared for mound work a few days later. The southpaw is eligible to return from the injured list as early as Sept. 23, and manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that he expects Lauer to be back in action prior to the end of the regular season.
Sep 14 2022Lauer (elbow) threw on flat ground Wednesday, and manager Craig Counsell said the session was "very positive," Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander landed on the shelf with elbow inflammation over the weekend, and it's an encouraging sign he's throwing only a few days later. Lauer is eligible to be activated from the 15-day IL on Sept. 23, and it's possible he's available at that point or shortly thereafter based on his early recovery progress.
Sep 10 2022Lauer was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury forced Lauer to exit his previous start Wednesday against the Rockies after giving up seven runs and recording just eight outs. He received "very encouraging" MRI results the next day according to manager Craig Counsell, but he'll nonetheless miss at least his next two turns in the rotation. Whether or not he has a chance to return when first eligible Sep. 23 remains to be seen. Trevor Kelley was recalled to take his place on the roster.
Sep 9 2022Lauer (elbow) had "very encouraging" MRI results Thursday, according to manager Craig Counsell, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll have more tests Friday after consulting with a doctor. It sounds like he could rejoin the Brewers' rotation in relatively short order, as he was never placed on the injured list. The Brewers' rotation is quite shorthanded, with Freddy Peralta (shoulder) back on the IL and Aaron Ashby (shoulder) also sidelined.
Sep 7 2022Lauer (10-7), who took the loss Wednesday against the Rockies, was diagnosed with a left elbow strain and will miss at least one start, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander surrendered seven runs over 2.2 frames, and it was the first outing this season that he didn't last at least four innings. Lauer's next turn through the rotation lined up for Tuesday in St. Louis, but it appears he'll be skipped for at least one turn. More information on the 27-year-old's injury should be available in the coming days as he continues to be evaluated.
Sep 2 2022Lauer (10-6) allowed two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five in 6.2 innings to take the loss Friday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer bounced back with a quality start Friday after he gave up four runs in five innings during his last outing, but he was unable to pick up the win since the Brewers' offense scored just one run against Arizona. The southpaw has now posted four quality starts over his last six appearances, but he's been charged with losses during three of those quality starts. He tentatively lines up to make his next start against the Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field on Wednesday.
Aug 29 2022Lauer (10-5) gave up four earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out one batter over five innings to earn the win in a 9-7 victory over the Cubs on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer did enough to tally his 10th win of the season, but it was not his finest effort. He needed 101 pitches to get through five innings and issued four free passes, which belabored his pitch count and got him into some trouble early on. Lauer's ERA rose to 3.58 after the game. He has now issued 51 walks in 135.2 innings this season, which is substantially weaker than the major-league average. The 27-year-old left-hander will look to show better control in his next expected time out at Arizona.
Aug 22 2022Lauer (9-5) earned the win over the Dodgers on Monday, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Dodgers made Lauer work in the contest -- they fouled off 24 of his pitches, and the left-hander had to depart after five innings as a result of throwing 98 pitches. However, Lauer came out on top, as he didn't allow any extra-base hits and kept Los Angeles off the scoreboard for five frames. Though his streak of three straight quality starts came to an end, the veteran hurler ended a two-game losing streak and tossed his first scoreless outing since May 20. Lauer has already established a career high with nine wins on the campaign, and he has a very good chance of surpassing the career-high mark of 149.2 innings he set in 2019 with San Diego.
Aug 17 2022Lauer (8-5) took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven batters over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer allowed only one hit and didn't give up a run through five innings, but Austin Barnes and Max Muncy tagged him for solo homers in the sixth and seventh frames, respectively. That was enough to send the left-hander to his second straight loss despite the fact that he logged his third consecutive quality start. The fact that Lauer was done in by the long ball reflects his season as a whole -- he's posted a solid 3.58 ERA and 1.20 WHIP but has allowed 24 home runs, third-most in the majors.
Aug 12 2022Lauer (8-4) took the loss Friday versus the Cardinals, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer didn't give up a lot, but he was tagged for home runs by Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning and Nolan Arenado in the sixth to account for all of the runs on his line. This marked the first time Lauer's logged consecutive quality starts since a four-start streak from April 18 to May 6. The southpaw owns a 3.64 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 116:42 K:BB through 118.2 innings across 21 outings this season. He's projected for a difficult home start versus the Dodgers next week.
Aug 5 2022Lauer (8-3) allowed a run on six hits and three walks while striking out four over seven innings, earning the win Friday over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer threw 68 of 100 pitches for strikes and limited the damage to a Kyle Farmer RBI single in the fifth inning. Lauer has allowed exactly one run in four of his last six starts, though he only has two wins to go with four no-decisions in that span. The southpaw continues to show improvement after a rough June, and his ERA is down to 3.59 with a 1.22 WHIP and 111:40 K:BB through 112.2 innings across 20 starts this year. He's lined up for an NL Central showdown against the Cardinals in St. Louis next week.
Jul 30 2022Lauer (7-3) earned the win over Boston on Saturday, pitching five innings and allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer wasn't at his most efficient in the outing -- he needed 94 pitches to complete five frames and walked three batters for his third straight game -- but he stuck around just long enough to earn his first victory since mid-June. The lefty hurler's success was partly due to keeping the ball in the park for the first time in his past five starts. Lauer has been effective as a mid-rotation starter for the Brewers, complementing his seven wins with a 3.75 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 107:37 K:BB across 105.2 innings.
Jul 24 2022Lauer allowed four runs on six hits and three walks, striking out three in 4.1 innings of a 10-9 win Sunday over Colorado. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer managed to hold Colorado to two runs through the first four innings but couldn't make it through the fifth after Kris Bryant smashed a two-run homer with one out. It was the 20th homer the lefty has allowed in 100.2 innings this season, 12 of which have come in his last 44 innings of work. He's managed to compile a 3.84 ERA, but peripheral stats suggest that he's been fairly lucky in his 18 starts. He'll need to figure out a way to keep the ball in the ballpark over the last two months of the season to maintain decent production. His next start will likely be next weekend in Boston.
Jul 16 2022Lauer allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out four over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer limited the damage to a Darin Ruf solo home run in the sixth inning, though the Giants scraped together another run against the Brewers' bullpen in the eighth. This was the third time this season Lauer's managed to complete seven frames. He's given up eight runs (seven earned) in 22.1 innings across his last four starts, trimming his ERA from 3.89 prior to that stretch to 3.64 at the end of the first half of the season. The southpaw has added a 1.16 WHIP and 100:31 K:BB in 96.1 innings across 17 starts.
Jul 10 2022Lauer allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk, striking out seven in five innings in an 8-6 loss Sunday against Pittsburgh. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer gave up a run in the second, fourth and fifth innings. The Pirates had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, leading to two runs. The final run against the lefty came on a solo blast by Ke'Bryan Hayes with two outs in the fifth. Lauer has allowed 10 homers in his last 32.2 innings, spanning six starts and his 18 homers allowed on the season is the second-most in the National League. He'll likely take the mound one more time before the All-Star break, this weekend in San Francisco.
Jul 4 2022Lauer allowed one run on two hits and two walks over six innings in Monday's win over the Cubs. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer served up a solo homer to Nelson Velazquez in the third inning but was otherwise dominant. It was the first time he allowed fewer than three runs since May 26; he posted a brutal 6.54 ERA over his previous six outings. The 27-year-old southpaw now owns a strong 89:27 K:BB with a 3.84 ERA through 84.1 innings this season. Lauer is lined up to face the Pirates at home this weekend.
Jun 29 2022Lauer allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings during Wednesday's 5-3 win against the Rays. He had three strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer generated only eight swinging strikes on 92 total pitches, and he was pulled during the fifth inning after being unable to maintain a 3-2 lead. The left-hander posted a 2.38 ERA through his first 10 outings of the year, but he's surrendered 20 runs in his past four starts. He tentatively lines up for a matchup with the Cubs early next week.
Jun 22 2022Lauer (6-3) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer's start was bookended by two-run home runs -- he gave up one to Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning and another to Nolan Arenado in the sixth. The long ball has become a problem for Lauer recently, as he's allowed eight across his last three starts. Those recent struggles have pushed his ERA up to 3.89 with a 1.19 WHIP and 77:23 K:BB across 74 innings overall. The southpaw is lined up for a road start versus the Rays next week.
Jun 17 2022Lauer allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over 6.1 innings in Friday's win over the Reds. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer cruised through four shutout frames before yielding three homers. Albert Almora hit a two-run shot in the fifth before Brandon Drury and Tommy Pham went back-to-back in the sixth. Lauer has given up three homers in two straight outings, raising his season ERA to 3.57 through 12 starts. The 27-year-old is projected to face the Cardinals at home next week.
Jun 12 2022Lauer (5-2) took the loss Saturday, surrendering eight runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and four walks over five innings as the Brewers were downed 8-6 by the Nationals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Nats hung a pair of four-spots on Lauer, including a fifth inning in which the southpaw served up back-to-back-to-back homers to Juan Soto, Nelson Cruz and Josh Bell. This was by far Lauer's worst performance of the year, as he hadn't allowed more than four runs in any prior outing, but his early season success appears to have faded. He's walked multiple batters in four straight starts, posting a 13:13 K:BB in 20 innings over that stretch to go along with a 5.85 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.
Jun 5 2022Lauer allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings in Sunday's loss to the Padres. He didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer turned in a quality start after lasting just four innings in his last outing Tuesday. He left Sunday's game in line for the loss after a sloppy fifth inning, but the Brewers were able to force extra innings to get him off the hook. This was his sixth quality start of the year. Lauer has a 2.38 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 65:17 K:BB across 56.2 innings in 10 starts. He lines up for a road start versus the Nationals next weekend.
May 31 2022Lauer allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, three walks and a hit batsman in four innings of an 8-7 loss Tuesday against the Cubs. He struck out six and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer tossed 27 pitches in the first and 31 more in the fourth, allowing runs in each inning. All in all, he threw only fifty-five of 89 pitches for strikes. After issuing just eight free passes in his first seven starts, the lefty has walked seven batters in his last two starts, spanning nine innings. Despite the recent hiccup, Lauer still has a 2.49 ERA and 61:15 K:BB rate over 50.2 innings to start the season.
May 26 2022Lauer (5-1) earned the win against St. Louis on Thursday, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This wasn't among Lauer's best starts this season, as he labored with 96 pitches over five frames and walked a season-high four hitters while tallying a season-low one strikeout. Nonetheless, he was able to take control after the first two innings, retiring nine of the final 10 batters he faced and going just long enough to earn the victory. The left-handed hurler has been outstanding for Milwaukee this season, compiling a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while tying for second in the National League with five wins. He's lined up to make his next start in Chicago next week.
May 20 2022Lauer (4-1) allowed five hits through seven scoreless innings Friday, striking out five and earning the victory over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer bounced back from his first loss of the season in dominant fashion Friday. He allowed just one extra-base hit and danced around a couple of threats by the Nationals. It was his second straight game without issuing a free pass as he improved his K:BB to an impressive 54:8 through 41.2 innings. Lauer will carry a 2.16 ERA into his projected start in San Diego next week.
May 14 2022Lauer (3-1) gave up four earned runs on six hits and zero walks while striking out seven in five innings Saturday in Miami. He took the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's encouraging that in what might be his worst start of the season through six starts, Lauer still struck out enough batters to contribute something for fantasy. He has struck out 39 batters in 24.1 innings over his last four starts. This marked the first time all season he gave up more than one home run, as Jesus Aguilar, Jorge Soler and Brian Anderson all took him deep. Lauer lines up to face the Nationals at home next weekend.
May 7 2022Lauer (3-0) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks over 6.1 innings in a 6-3 victory over Atlanta. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw tossed 94 pitches (59 strikes) as he reeled off his fourth straight quality start. The three free passes were a season high for Lauer and he did serve up another homer, his fourth in 29.2 innings on the year, but it's hard to argue with the career-high 36.2 percent strikeout rate he's compiled so far. Lauer will take a 1.82 ERA and 0.94 WHIP into his next outing.
Apr 30 2022Lauer (2-0) got the win during Saturday's 9-1 victory over the Cubs, allowing one run on five hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming off a 13-strikeout performance on Sunday Night Baseball, Lauer put up nearly as many whiffs Saturday and got the win this time. Milwaukee jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and the 26-year-old faltered just once when he served up a Yan Gomes solo shot in the second inning. Lauer is among the leaders in both ERA and strikeouts, and it appears Milwaukee's penchant for developing pitchers has uncovered another gem. He's tentatively projected to take the hill next against Cincinnati on Wednesday.
Apr 24 2022Lauer didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 1-0 victory over Philadelphia, allowing five hits and a walk with 13 strikeouts in six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was in top form for a Sunday Night Baseball pitchers duel with Aaron Nola, running into trouble in just the fifth inning when he was able to work out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam unscathed. The 26-year-old has a career 8.7 K/9 mark but took it to the next level Sunday with 13 whiffs, at one point striking out six straight. Lauer will take his dazzling 2.20 ERA through 16.1 innings into his next start against the Cubs on Saturday.
Apr 19 2022Lauer (1-0) picked up the win in Monday's 6-1 victory over the Pirates, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A fourth-inning solo shot by Diego Castillo was the only blemish on his line. Lauer tossed 64 of 87 pitches for strikes in the quality start. The 26-year-old southpaw has had a solid start to the season with a 3.48 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through 10.1 innings, though it should be noted his two starts came against marginal opposition in the Bucs and O's.
Apr 13 2022Lauer gave up four runs -- three earned -- over 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's victory over the Orioles. He allowed three hits and posted a 5:2 K:BB in the contest. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was not sharp Tuesday, but he limited the damage and the Brewers' offense and bullpen wound up taking him off the hook. He posted a 2.23 ERA in 80.2 innings over his final 15 appearances of the 2021 campaign, so he presumably has some level of security despite being at the back end of the Brewers' rotation.
Mar 23 2022Manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Lauer (groin) is "full go" after being scratched from his scheduled Cactus League start against the White Sox on Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers considered Lauer's groin injury to be minor, and he was able to throw a side session Wednesday. The southpaw should be able to make his next turn through the rotation, and it's unlikely that his groin issue will impact his availability for Opening Day.
Oct 12 2021Lauer allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings during the loss to Atlanta in Game 4 of the NLDS on Tuesday. He had two strikeouts and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers ended a 22-inning scoreless streak to provide the left-hander a 2-0 lead during the top of the fourth inning, but he was unable to maintain that advantage while failing to complete the bottom of the frame. Lauer ended up throwing 50 of 74 pitches for strikes and generated nine whiffs on the day. The 26-year-old was a reliable starter for Milwaukee in 2021 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 117:41 K:BB over 118.2 innings, and he'll enter the offseason as a safe bet to begin spring training in the starting rotation.
Oct 2 2021Lauer didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Dodgers after allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while fanning three across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer had given up one run or fewer in each of his prior five starts, but the wheels came off in this one and he finished with his second-worst mark of the season when it comes to runs allowed. He was facing one of the best offenses in the National League, however, and this poor outing shouldn't erase the great job he's been doing on the mound of late. The southpaw will end the regular season with career-best marks in both ERA (3.19) and WHIP (1.14) across 24 appearances (20 starts).
Sep 25 2021Lauer (7-5) allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out nine as he got the win over the Mets on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer continued his streak of dominance with his third win over his last four starts. The 26-year-old has allowed one run or less in each of his five starts in September and recorded a season-high nine strikeouts Friday. The Mets got to him in the opening frame after Brandon Nimmo tripled to lead off the game and Francisco Lindor grounded out to the shortstop to bring him home. Lauer has definitely solidified himself as the Brewers' No. 4 pitcher heading into the postseason, but first is projected for a showdown against the Dodgers next week. He'll carry a 2.93 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 114:39 K:BB into his next start.
Sep 20 2021Lauer didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Cubs after allowing one run on 5.1 innings, giving up one hit and three walks while fanning six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer has been pitching at a high level of late, allowing one or fewer runs in each of his previous four starts while also posting two quality starts in that stretch. He has gone 2-0 with a blistering 1.09 ERA in September and seems to be gearing up for a strong end of the regular season.
Sep 12 2021Lauer (6-5) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer torched Cleveland to start the contest, rolling through five no-hit innings before finally running into trouble in the sixth. He coughed up three straight singles, including an RBI base knock by Myles Straw. He's now 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA over 19.1 frames in his last three outings. Lauer lowered his season ERA to 3.10 with a 99:34 K:BB. He's lined up to face the Cubs at home next weekend.
Sep 11 2021Lauer will start Sunday against Cleveland, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will take the ball in place of Brandon Woodruff, who is dealing with a stomach bug. Lauer has given up one earned run while striking out nine over his last 14 innings (two starts).
Sep 7 2021Lauer (5-5) earned the win Tuesday over Philadelphia. He allowed just four hits and a walk with five strikeouts across seven shutout innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: September is treating Lauer well so far, as he's allowed just one run, seven hits and two walks across 14 innings in his two starts this month. Philadelphia couldn't get a runner past second base on the southpaw's watch Tuesday. With the stellar start, Lauer lowered his ERA to 3.18 with a 1.18 WHIP and 91:33 K:BB through 96.1 innings this season. He'll look to keep rolling next week in Detroit.
Sep 2 2021Lauer allowed one run on three hits and a walk over seven innings in Thursday's no-decision against the Giants. He had four strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer put together his longest start of the season, going seven full innings for the first time since June 2019. After giving up a leadoff homer to Austin Slater to start the game, followed by a Darin Ruf walk three batters later, Lauer yielded just one baserunner the rest of the way, and that was the result of a Jace Peterson error. Lauer has just one win (1-2) in his last eight outings, but he's posted a 2.54 ERA during that stretch.
Aug 27 2021Lauer (4-5) yielded two runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer coughed up a two-run homer to Josh Donaldson in the first inning but avoided any further damage. He needed 102 pitches (63 strikes) to get through 4.2 frames and has now failed to finish five innings in three straight starts. The 26-year-old's ERA is now up to 3.61 through 82.1 innings. Lauer is lined up to face the Giants on the road next week.
Aug 21 2021Lauer didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Nationals, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander gave up two runs in the top of the first inning before exiting the game in the fifth after 76 pitches (52 strikes) on the hook for his fifth loss of the season, but Milwaukee's offense bailed Lauer out with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The 26-year-old will take a 3.59 ERA and 76:29 K:BB through 77.2 innings into his next outing.
Aug 15 2021Lauer allowed one run on three hits and struck out six across four innings in a no-decision versus Pittsburgh on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After missing a week and a half on the COVID-19 injured list, Lauer's return to action was fairly short. He threw 49 of 72 pitches for strikes before Brent Suter relieved him. Lauer continues to have the upper hand over the Pirates, as he's allowed just three runs in 18.1 innings in four appearances versus the Brewers' NL Central rivals. The southpaw owns a 3.44 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 73:26 K:BB across 73.1 innings overall. He's projected to make his next start versus Washington next weekend.
Aug 14 2021Lauer will start Sunday's game against the Pirates, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has not started a game since Aug. 2 due to COVID-19 protocols. Three of his last five starts have come against the Pirates, and he has logged a 1.78 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 25.1 innings while facing mostly poor offenses over that five-start stretch.
Aug 13 2021Lauer is with the Brewers on Friday and will be activated from the COVID-19 injured list, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is a strong candidate to start Saturday's game against the Pirates. Three of his last five starts have come against the Pirates, and he has logged a 1.78 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 25.1 innings while facing mostly poor offenses over that five-start stretch.
Aug 4 2021The Brewers placed Lauer on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday after he was revealed to have tested positive for the virus. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer is the seventh player in the organization to land on the COVID-19 IL as a result of the team's recent outbreak in positive test results. In a corresponding move, the Brewers activated waiver pickup Sal Romano, who will provide some length out of the bullpen in the short term.
Aug 3 2021Lauer (4-4) earned the win Monday against the Pirates after tossing five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer took advantage of the fact that he was facing one of the weakest offenses in the National League to deliver one of his best outings of the campaign, but this shouldn't be much of a surprise considering the way he's been pitching of late. Aside from pitching five scoreless frames, Lauer also tossed 54 of his 84 pitches for strikes and didn't walk anyone for the second time over his last three outings. He owns an excellent 1.44 ERA across his last six starts and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of those contests.
Jul 22 2021Lauer didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Royals, giving up two unearned runs on three hits over five innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw exited the game in line for the win with the Brewers ahead 3-2, but Brent Suter immediately coughed three unearned runs in the sixth inning. Lauer hadn't had an outing of at least five innings with zero free passes since May 4, and his efficiency remains the biggest obstacle between him and a breakout. On the season, he sports a 3.52 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 60:24 K:BB through 61.1 innings.
Jul 20 2021Lauer is dealing with a fingernail issue, but manager Craig Counsell said the lefty will be ready to start Wednesday against the Royals, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer swapped spots in the Brewers' second-half pitching schedule with Brett Anderson, who will get the nod Tuesday. The issue doesn't sound like it's particularly serious, so the Brewers will deploy Lauer in hopes that he can continue his form from his final three starts before the All-Star break, a stretch in which he allowed just two runs in 18.1 innings.
Jul 9 2021Lauer (3-4) allowed a run on four walks and four hits over six innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer held the Reds scoreless through three innings before coughing up an RBI double to Tucker Barnhart in the fourth. It was his third consecutive quality start and he dropped his season ERA to 3.83 through 56.1 innings this season. He took his first loss since June 14 and broke a short two-start winning streak. With as well as he's pitched recently, Lauer should continue getting looks as the starter after the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2021Lauer (3-3) earned the win Saturday against the Pirates after hurling 6.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and four walks while fanning four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer picked up his third win of the season and notched his second straight quality start in the process. The 26-year-old southpaw owns a 2.08 ERA over his last three appearances and is going through his most productive stretch of the season, but it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to hold that up since he owns a 5.40 ERA with a 29:17 K:BB since the beginning of June across six appearances. His next start is slated to come next week at home against the Reds.
Jun 28 2021Lauer (2-3) secured his second win of the season Sunday against the Rockies after tossing six shutout innings while allowing two hits, two walks and striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was in peak form Sunday as he blanked the Rockies while allowing just four baserunners over six innings. The only real scoring threat they had was bases-loaded in the second but Lauer was able to escape after striking out Chi Chi Gonzalez. All six of his strikeouts and all 12 of his total whiffs came via his fastball. Lauer lowered his ERA to 4.50 and has a 47:16 K:BB over 44 innings. He has another favorable matchup on tap against the Pirates later in the week.
Jun 20 2021Lauer allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over five innings in Sunday's win over the Rockies. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer actually cruised through five shutout innings before a disastrous start to the sixth. He gave up three straight hits, including back-to-back homers by Yonathan Daza and Trevor Story, before he was lifted from the contest. The 26-year-old southpaw maintained his 1-3 record while his ERA bumped up to 5.21. He's given up 16 runs in as many innings over his last four outings. If he gets another turn in the rotation, Lauer could face Colorado again, this time at home, next weekend.
Jun 18 2021Lauer will start Sunday's game against the Rockies in Colorado, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Milwaukee is in the midst of a stretch of 16 games in 16 days, so Lauer will temporarily remain part of a six-man rotation as manager Craig Counsell looks to build in some extra rest for the team's top five starters. Lauer underwhelmed his last time out June 14 versus the Reds, giving up four runs on five hits and four walks over five innings to take his third loss of the season. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect better results from the lefty this weekend at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
Jun 14 2021Lauer (1-3) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Reds after allowing four runs on five hits and four walks while fanning three across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer has pitched more than five innings just twice all season long and has been showing some control issues over his last few outings, as he owns a 14:10 K:BB across his three starts this month. The former Kent State product has been serving as the Brewers' sixth starter on a temporal basis, but his numbers haven't been very good -- he owns a 5.18 ERA in eight appearances (five starts) thus far.
Jun 11 2021Lauer will serve at least temporarily as the Brewers' sixth starter and will get the ball Monday against the Reds, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers are in the middle of a 16-day stretch with no off days and want to give their starters some extra rest, so they'll turn to Lauer for a start or two. The lefty has made four starts and three relief appearances this season, posting a poor 4.82 ERA despite a solid combination of a 27.0 percent strikeout rate and a 7.4 percent walk rate.
Jun 10 2021Lauer tossed four innings of long relief Wednesday in the Brewers' 7-3 loss to the Reds, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer had started in both of his prior two appearances, but after he was tagged for seven runs in just two innings in his June 1 outing versus the Tigers, the southpaw no longer looks like he'll be part of a six-man rotation. Instead, he was summoned from the bullpen to eat innings after Wednesday's starter, Brett Anderson, was hit hard before being pulled for a pinch hitter in the top of the fourth. Most of Lauer's future relief opportunities are likely to come in low-leverage spots or mop-up situations.
Jun 2 2021Lauer (1-2) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering seven runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over two-plus innings as the Brewers were downed 10-7 by the Tigers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The ball was flying at American Family Field as the two teams combined for nine homers, and Lauer took the worst of it. The southpaw has been tagged for eight long balls in only 24 innings this season, leading to a 4.88 ERA despite his strong 27:5 K:BB, but he'll likely remain in a sixth starter/swingman role for the Brewers as they try to find some consistency at the back of their rotation.
Jun 1 2021Lauer is listed as Milwaukee's probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Tigers, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers haven't revealed whether they'll stick with a six-man rotation during the upcoming week, but Lauer's inclusion on the pitching schedule would suggest that's the case. Lauer will be rewarded with a second straight turn through the rotation after he limited the Padres to one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings in a no-decision May 26.
May 26 2021Lauer allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings Wednesday against the Padres. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was recalled from Triple-A Nashville prior to this start, and he performed well both from the mound and with his bat. None of the four hits he surrendered went for extra bases, and he also racked up an impressive 14 swinging strikes across 85 total pitches. Lauer also provided the only offense for the Brewers, slugging a solo homer in the third inning. For the season, he now owns a 2.45 ERA with a 22:3 K:BB across 22 innings of work as both a reliever and starter.
May 25 2021Lauer will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville to start Wednesday against the Padres, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old was demoted May 15 but will rejoin the rotation and start Wednesday against his former ballclub. Lauer has pitched well for the Brewers in four appearances (two starts) with a 2.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB over 16 innings.
May 15 2021Lauer was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer had recently shifted to a bullpen role but is expected to build back up as a starter in the minors. In two starts and two relief appearances this season, Lauer owns a 2.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB. Hoby Milner was called up in a corresponding move.
May 9 2021Lauer will move to the bullpen and is expected to pitch Sunday against the Marlins, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old will shift to the bullpen Sunday with Brett Anderson (hamstring) returning from the injured list and rejoining the starting rotation. Lauer allowed six runs (two earned) on 12 hits with a 10:2 K:BB in 11 frames over two spot starts.
May 4 2021Lauer (1-1) allowed six runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out seven across six innings Tuesday to take the loss against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer surrendered three home runs, which accounted for five of his six earned runs. His line was spared by four unearned runs, which came after Travis Shaw misplaced a ball at third base in the the third inning. Even so, it was a concerning performance for Lauer, who allowed 1.6 HR/9 in 2020. As for this season, Lauer has a 1.64 ERA with a 10:2 K:BB across 11 innings. The Brewers pitching staff is currently decimated by injury, which could result in Lauer receiving another turn through the rotation Sunday in Miami.
May 2 2021Lauer is listed as the Brewers' probable starter for Tuesday's game in Philadelphia, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Heading into the upcoming week, Milwaukee remains without two members of its Opening Day rotation (Corbin Burnes and Brett Anderson), while two of the team's top options for spot starts in Josh Lindblom (knee) and Zack Godley (finger) are also on the injured list. As a result, Lauer will pick up a second start after he held his own in his season debut Thursday against the Dodgers, when he picked up the win while working five scoreless frames. He'll tentatively line up for a two-start week, with his second turn likely to come next Sunday in Miami if none of Burnes (COVID-19 IL), Anderson (hamstring), Lindblom or Godley is activated before the weekend.
Apr 29 2021Lauer (1-0) beat the Dodgers on Thursday, going five innings and permitting no runs on four hits and two walks with strikeouts in a 2-1 Brewers win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start of the season after Zach Godley was placed on the IL, Lauer was able to shut down the Dodgers high-powered offense before being pulled with only 73 pitches. It was an encouraging first outing after a disastrous 2020 campaign and may have earned Lauer another turn in the rotation.
Apr 28 2021Lauer was recalled from the Brewers' alternate training site and will start Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Zack Godley (finger) landed on the injured list and Lauer will be brought up in a corresponding move to give the rest of the rotation some rest. If he holds his own, Lauer could stick around for another start next week in Philadelphia.
Mar 19 2021Lauer was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old gave up eight earned runs and had a 3:7 over five innings across three appearances in spring training, so it's hardly a surprise he didn't earn a rotation spot. Lauer figures to be in the mix for a promotion when the Brewers need a spot starter this season.
Mar 5 2021Lauer has allowed five earned runs over three innings through two appearances this spring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer and the Brewers are hoping he will bounce back from a rough 2020 season in which he allowed 16 earned runs over 11 innings, but he has not shown any signs of a turnaround early on. He will have a few more opportunities to right the ship, but the Brewers can still option him, so he is going to have to show some results to avoid opening the regular season in the minors.
Sep 24 2020Lauer was recalled by the Brewers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer spent a week at the Brewers' alternate training site, but he'll return to the major-league roster and provide a multi-inning option for manager Craig Counsell as the team prepares to play five games in four days to end the regular season. The southpaw has made three appearances (two starts) this year, allowing 13 runs over 9.1 innings.
Sep 17 2020The Brewers optioned Lauer to their alternate training site Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After serving as the 29th man in Wednesday's doubleheader with the Cardinals, Lauer was bounced off the roster with Milwaukee reducing its contingent to 28 men ahead of their series with the Royals that begins Friday. The southpaw went unused out of the bullpen in both halves of the twin bill.
Sep 16 2020Lauer was recalled as the 29th man for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was optioned in mid-August after struggling significantly in his first two starts for the Brewers, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits in just 6.2 innings while striking out four and walking five. He'll likely be available as a long reliever Wednesday.
Aug 30 2020Lauer could be called up by the Brewers to start Monday's game against the Pirates, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Craig Counsell said Sunday that the team will make a roster move to bring in Monday's starting pitcher, but he didn't reveal who the pitcher would be. Lauer is a strong candidate to rejoin the major-league club after spending just over two weeks at the Brewers' alternate training site. The southpaw struggled to generate much production during his two most recent starts prior to being sent down by Milwaukee.
Aug 13 2020Lauer was optioned to the Brewers' alternate training site Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was effective in his first appearance this season, but he struggled mightily in his two most recent starts, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits and five walks while striking out four over 6.2 innings. As a result, he'll head to the alternate training site to work on improving. He could return to the majors at some point in 2020 if he can turn things around in Appleton. Drew Rasmussen's contract was selected by the Brewers on Thursday, and he's a candidate to take Lauer's spot in the starting rotation for now.
Aug 12 2020Lauer (0-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer also hit Nelson Cruz with a pitch in the disastrous outing. The 25-year-old Lauer has given up 13 runs over just 6.2 innings in his last two starts. The southpaw could be at risk of losing his spot in the rotation to Corbin Burnes. If Lauer gets another start, it would likely come in a rematch with the Twins on Tuesday.
Aug 9 2020Lauer is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Twins, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander had an ugly performance in his first start of the season Friday with six runs allowed over three innings, but he'll receive at least one more turn through the rotation. Lauer may need a better performance Wednesday to retain the starting role, as Corbin Burnes is fully stretched out and delivered 5.1 innings of stellar relief in Saturday's contest.
Aug 7 2020Lauer (0-1) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks over three innings in a loss to the Reds on Friday. He struck out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds entered the night with zero runs scored in their last 22.1 innings, but the offense found reprieve against Lauer, who was making his first start in a Brewers uniform. All of the damage was done in the second inning; Cincinnati went walk, single, flyout, double, sac fly, double, walk, homer against Lauer. Part of the Trent Grisham-Luis Urias trade, Lauer made his team debut July 26 and fanned six while allowing just one hit over 2.2 scoreless innings against the Cubs. The lefty will likely transition back to the bullpen for the time being with the Brewers ostensibly healthy in the rotation.
Aug 5 2020Lauer will start Friday's game against the Reds, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old entered summer camp in competition for a spot in the starting rotation, but a trip the injured list interrupted that opportunity and put him in the bullpen once he was activated. Lauer excelled in his lone relief appearance, delivering 2.2 scoreless frames while allowing only one hit and walk and recording six strikeouts. The left-hander threw 46 pitches in that outing and is unlikely to be fully stretched out, but he could still cover about four innings if he builds on that workload. Lauer's status in the rotation beyond Friday remains to be seen, as Brett Anderson's return from the injured list earlier this week brought the group back to full health.
Jul 27 2020Lauer (COVID-19) worked 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 9-1 loss to the Cubs, striking out six while permitting a base hit and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer's placement on the COVID-19 injured list earlier this month took him out of the mix for a spot in the Opening Day rotation, but the southpaw was cleared to join the big club in a bullpen role Sunday. Though he entered the game with two on base and one out with the Brewers trailing 5-0, Lauer did well to limit the damage while he was on the mound. He struck out two of the three batters he faced to escape the fourth inning, then retired six of the seven batters he faced over the next two frames. Lauer's stellar showing in relief could allow him to regain consideration for the rotation the next time an opening arises, but for the time being, he'll work as a multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen.
Jul 26 2020Lauer (COVID-19) was activated from the injured list and is available out of the bullpen Sunday against the Cubs, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getting the coronavirus cost Lauer a shot at opening the year in the rotation. The team's fifth stater, Freddy Peralta, is starting Sunday, so it would be logical for Lauer to follow him out of the bullpen if the situation calls for a left-handed pitcher who can log multiple innings.
Jul 20 2020Brewers manager Craig Counsell said that Lauer (not injury related) will report to the club's alternate training site in Appleton on Wednesday to pitch in an intrasquad game, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since Milwaukee is set to begin its season just two days later, Counsell acknowledged that Lauer is on track to miss Opening Day "by a little bit." Lauer remains on the COVID-19 injured list after he was in close contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus, but he's since cleared all necessary protocols and is merely building up his arm at this point after the missed time at summer camp put him behind Milwaukee's other starting candidates. If Lauer is activated from the IL shortly after the season starts, it's unclear if he will slot into the rotation or serve as a long reliever out of the bullpen.
Jul 19 2020Lauer will pitch one inning in Sunday's intrasquad game, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will be his first game action of summer camp as he was delayed due to a COVID-19 testing issue -- he indicated he was in close contact with someone who tested positive, so he needed to self quarantine and test negative. Lauer is behind in the competition for the fifth-starter spot, so he will likely open the year as either a true reliever or piggyback starter. As he gets stretched out, Lauer could provide another left-handed presence in the Brewers' rotation.
Jul 12 2020Lauer confirmed Sunday that the Brewers placed him on the COVID-19 injured list, though the left-hander said he is healthy and expects to be ready to go for the start of the 2020 season, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While it's not clear if Lauer himself ever tested positive for COVID-19, he indicated that he was in close contact with someone who did. As a result, the Brewers placed him in the COVID-19 protocol, but since he's on track to throw a bullpen session at the team facility Sunday or Monday, the assumption is that Lauer has already submitted two negative test results. If Lauer's bullpen session goes according to plan, he'll likely resume facing hitters a few days later, which should put him on track for Opening Day. Lauer is in contention for the final spot in the Brewers' rotation, with Corbin Burnes or Freddy Peralta seemingly representing his main competitors for that spot.
Jul 11 2020Lauer landed on the injured list for undisclosed reasons Saturday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Clubs across the league have provided minimal details on several injured-list assignments due to privacy issues concerning COVID-19, though Lauer was reportedly battling a non-coronavirus illness earlier in camp. The lefty, who was acquired in a trade with the Padres back in November, is battling for a spot in the back of the Brewers' rotation, though his lost time could lead to him opening the season in the bullpen.
Jul 6 2020Lauer is one of three options to win the Brewers' fifth starter job, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was limited in spring training with a shoulder injury, but the shutdown period gave him the opportunity to get healthy and now he has a chance to open the year in the rotation. Lauer will be competing with Corbin Burnes and Freddy Peralta during summer camp. The Brewers could conceivably go with a six-man rotation where it's a tandem start on the sixth day, or they could just be very conservative with how deep they let the non Brandon Woodruff starters go.
Mar 20 2020Lauer (shoulder) should be healthy when play resumes, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was going to miss the beginning of the regular season due to some shoulder soreness that popped up in early March, but the injury was always considered minor, and with games not expected to take place until at least May he has ample time to recover. Lauer has remained at the Brewers' spring training complex in order to focus on his rehab, so barring a setback he should be good to go when players return to the field.
Mar 10 2020Lauer has a left shoulder impingement that is considered minor but will rule him out for the start of the regular season, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer had seemed to have a good chance to break camp in the Brewers' rotation but now won't get he chance to do so. He'll resume playing catch later this week, so he shouldn't wind up missing too much time, but he's expected to head to the injured list to open the season. That leaves Freddy Peralta and Corbin Burnes as the primary contestants for the fifth starter spot in Milwaukee, though Lauer could get the chance to claim the job once healthy.
Mar 2 2020Lauer started Sunday's spring game against the Reds and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and posted a 5:0 K:BB. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Craig Counsell said about a week ago that Lauer was competing with Freddy Peralta for the fifth spot in the Brewers' starting rotation, and Lauer has responded, giving up just one earned run and posting a 7:1 K:BB in 4.1 innings over two outings. Peralta has pitched equally as well, so the two are seemingly neck-and-neck at this point.
Feb 24 2020Lauer is competing with Freddy Peralta for the fifth starter spot in the Brewers' rotation, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It seemed Lauer was a shoe-in for a rotation spot after the Brewers acquired him from the Padres in November, but he does not have a spot locked up just yet. The Brewers did exchange assets for Lauer, though, and he fared better than Peralta as a starter last season, so Lauer is likely the early favorite.
Nov 27 2019The Brewers acquired Lauer and infielder Luis Urias from the Padres on Wednesday in exchange for outfielder Trent Grisham and pitcher Zach Davies, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Grisham and Urias represent the principal pieces in the four-player deal, with the Lauer and Davies portion of the trade simply representing a swap of depth arms. Lauer was one of several young starting pitchers the Padres rolled out in 2019, with the 24-year-old delivering a 4.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 138:51 K:BB across 149.2 innings. The southpaw will tentatively slot into the middle of the Milwaukee rotation, but it wouldn't be surprising if he gets pushed into long or middle relief as the team presumably adds more arms via free agency or trade as the offseason unfolds.
Sep 27 2019Lauer allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out eight in the no-decision versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The damage came at the end of Lauer's outing, as he issued a bases-loaded walk to Christian Walker, and then saw Wilmer Flores score on an error. It was still a solid performance for the 24-year-old, who has recorded eight or more strikeouts in four of his last six starts. Lauer posted a 4.45 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 138 strikeouts and 8-10 record in 149.2 innings spanning 30 appearances (29 starts) this year.
Sep 20 2019Lauer (8-10) was charged with the loss against the Diamondbacks on Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out nine across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite turning in a quality start, Lauer just didn't get enough run support. Of course, surrendering four walks didn't help things, but the southpaw worked around them enough to limit the damage. In 12 of his 14 starts at Petco Park this year, Lauer has held his opponents to three runs or fewer. The 24-year-old now owns a 4.53 ERA and 1.39 WHIP on the season. He'll look to bounce back during his final outing on Thursday against the Dodgers.
Sep 14 2019Lauer (8-9) took the loss versus the Rockies on Saturday, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lauer was victimized for three runs in the second, and another three were tacked onto his line before Luis Perdomo relieved him in the third. The Padres made a five-run rally in the eighth, but they couldn't even the score, leaving Lauer with the loss. The southpaw has a 4.60 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 139 innings. Lauer lines up to face the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Sep 8 2019Lauer allowed a run on four hits and two walks over six frames Sunday, striking out four in the win over the Rockies. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Drew Butera's third-inning sacrifice fly was the lone run to score on Lauer, lowering his ERA to 4.41 over 136.2 innings this season. While he didn't earn the win, the 24-year-old hasn't taken a loss since July 25. Lauer will face Colorado again -- this time at Coors Field -- on Friday.
Sep 1 2019Lauer (8-8) yielded four runs on six hits over six innings Sunday, striking out nine batters and earning the win over San Francisco.
Aug 26 2019Lauer (7-8) got the win against the Dodgers on Monday, giving up three earned runs on six hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking four in a 4-3 victory
Aug 19 2019Lauer gave up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five through four innings in a no-decision against the Reds on Monday.
Aug 14 2019Lauer did not factor into the decision against Tampa Bay on Tuesday, completing five innings and giving up three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out
Aug 8 2019Lauer did not factor into the decision against Colorado on Thursday, hurling four innings and giving up three runs on 10 hits while striking out two.
Aug 1 2019Lauer is slated to make his next start Friday against the Dodgers.

Jul 25 2018Lauer (5-7) gave up six runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings and taking the loss against the Mets on Tuesday.Lauer gave up three runs in the opening frame, and was never able to rebound before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the fifth. The southpaw threw 51 of his 85 pitches for strikes, but he only managed 10 first-pitch strikes to the 21 batters he faced. The 23-year-old has now given up 11 earned runs over his last two starts (six innings), a far cry from the 2.33 ERA he posted over his previous eight outings. Lauer's recent struggles make him a risky fantasy play for his next scheduled start Monday, even in a favorable home matchup against the offensively-challenged Giants.
Jul 23 2018The Padres moved Lauer's start back to Tuesday after recalling Joey Lucchesi for Monday's game against the Mets.Lauer started 16 games for the Padres during the first half of the 2018 campaign, logging a 4.87 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with a 67:32 K:BB across 77.2 innings. This move likely takes Lauer out of the running for a pair of starts this week as his next projected appearance after facing New York comes Monday versus the Giants.
Jul 15 2018Lauer (5-6) allowed five earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three across two innings to take the loss Sunday against the Cubs.Lauer allowed four of the first six batters he faced to reach base, with three runs scoring in the process. Things didn't improve much from there, which caused him to get a quick hook after just two innings pitched and 56 pitches. Prior to this start, he had put together eight consecutive outings in which he had given up three earned runs or fewer. While that's enough for him to be considered an option in deeper leagues, he also has allowed four or more earned runs in five of 16 starts this season.
Jul 10 2018Lauer (5-5) got the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over 8.2 innings against the Dodgers.Lauer was magnificent in this one and nearly got a complete game shutout, but he was pulled with 115 pitches after allowing a solo home run with two outs in the ninth. The lefty got off to a brutal start to his rookie campaign, but he's quietly been on a roll of late. Over his last five starts, Lauer has allowed one earned run or fewer in four of those to drop his ERA nearly two full runs in the process (6.20 to 4.40). He lines up to make one more start before the All-Star break, Sunday against the Cubs.
Jul 5 2018Lauer (4-5) allowed one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out two across five innings to earn the win Thursday against the Diamondbacks.Lauer was hardly dominant -- he allowed nine batters to reach base -- but he managed to limit the damage thanks to holding the Diamondbacks homerless in his five innings of work. He's now put together a string of seven consecutive starts in which he has allowed three earned runs of fewer, though he has completed six innings only twice in that span and struck out 28 batters across 37.2 innings. Without a standout area of production, Lauer's value is limited to deeper league formats even with this decent run of starts.
Jun 30 2018Lauer (3-5) took the loss against the Pirates on Friday, giving up six runs (three earned) on nine hits over five innings, striking out three and walking none in San Diego's 6-3 defeat.Lauer wasn't at his sharpest in this outing, but his final line was salvaged by virtue of three of the six runs he yielded being unearned. This actually marked the sixth straight start for Lauer where he's given up three earned runs or less, so he's been performing respectably lately. However, he still has a 5.08 ERA and he doesn't post high strikeout totals -- both things that have limited his overall fantasy value this season.
Jun 24 2018Lauer didn't factor into the decision against the Giants on Sunday, giving up one earned run on five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one in the Padres' 3-2 extra-innings defeat.Lauer pitched well in this contest, but a lack of run support and a blown save by Brad Hand sent the Padres to the defeat and he had to settle for a second straight no-decision. He's been on a nice run of late, as he hasn't given up more than three earned in an outing since May 28. However, his ERA still stands at 5.05 and he has a bloated 1.75 WHIP through 57 innings thanks to a handful of rough outings from earlier in the season -- numbers that still make it hard to trust him as a consistent as a fantasy option.
Jun 20 2018Lauer allowed one unearned run on three hits in a no-decision against the A's on Tuesday, striking out seven and walking two in six innings.Lauer allowed no extra-base hits en route to his third quality start of the year. The seven strikeouts match a season-high for Lauer and he now holds a 47:26 K:BB in 51 innings. The lefty still maintains an undesirable 5.47 ERA and .324 batting average against, but he has shown glimpses of effectiveness in between the rough outings. As starter Joey Lucchesi is set to return to the rotation, it's uncertain as of yet how the Padres will handle Lauer going forward.
Jun 13 2018Lauer (3-4) allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out two through 5.2 innings to pick up the win Wednesday against the Cardinals.Lauer hasn't completed the sixth inning since May 22, but he owns a solid 3.60 ERA and is 2-1 over his last three starts. Still, Lauer's K:BB is an uninspiring 40:24, including a 12:9 mark over his past 15 innings. Despite the fact that his last three starts have been serviceable, there's not enough here to start believing in him yet. He'll get another chance to prove himself Tuesday against the Athletics.
Jun 9 2018Lauer (2-4) took the loss Friday as the Padres fell 4-0 to the Marlins, allowing three runs on six hits and seven walks over five innings while striking out six.Miami had runners on base in every inning against the left-hander, but he managed to hold the opposition off the board until Lewis Brinson's fourth-inning sac fly finally opened the floodgates. Lauer's seven walks were easily a season high, but he's issued multiple free passes in five straight starts, leaving him with a 38:24 K:BB through 39.1 innings to go along with his 6.64 ERA. The rookie will next take the mound Wednesday in St. Louis.
Jun 2 2018Lauer (2-3) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in a win over the Reds on Saturday.Curt Casali got to Lauer for a home run in the second inning, but the lefty was otherwise effective, if far from dominant (just three swinging strikes on 87 pitches). Lauer stranded multiple baserunners in a couple frames and got out of the third by picking off Joey Votto at first base. He's had a couple decent outings lately, but Lauer has allowed 51 hits in 34.1 innings this season and has topped five strikeouts in just two of his eight starts. Up next: a road matchup in Miami.
May 29 2018Lauer (1-3) was hammered for five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 2.1 innings as he took the loss Monday against the Marlins.Lauer has failed to complete the fifth inning in three of his last four starts and has made just two quality starts in seven chances this season. He induced just three swinging strikes in 63 pitches and gave up three doubles among his seven hits. Joey Lucchesi is still dealing with a hip strain, but at this rate, Lauer has to be on the hot seat once Lucchesi looks ready to return.
May 22 2018Lauer allowed one earned run on six hits while walking two and striking out seven across six innings Tuesday against the Nationals. He did not factor into the decision.Lauer put together one of his better starts of the season, with the only real blemish being a solo home run he allowed to Bryce Harper. He generated 13 swinging strikes, a mark well above his season-long rate, but his velocity and pitch mix remained similar to prior starts. As a result, despite the solid effort, he remains difficult to roster in most mixed-league formats.
May 17 2018Lauer lasted 4.2 innings Thursday, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three against the Pirates, but he didn't factor into the decision.Neither Lauer nor opponent Chad Kuhl completed five frames. The San Diego southpaw didn't conquer three innings in his previous start Friday and has endured up-and-down efforts in his first four big-league starts. He'll carry an unsightly 8.14 ERA into his next scheduled trip to the hill Tuesday against the Nationals, which doesn't bode well for an improvement.
May 11 2018Lauer (1-2) got the loss, lasting just 2.1 innings while giving up six runs on seven hits with no strikeouts and a walk as the Padres lost 9-5 to the Cardinals on Friday.Lauer was coming off a strong outing against the Dodgers that saw him give up no earned runs over six innings but he couldn't follow up with a similar effort as he was shelled by the Cardinals in this one en route to the early exit. It was the second time in four starts this season that Lauer has been touched up for six runs and he now has an 8.27 ERA and a 2.14 WHIP - numbers that leave him well outside the fantasy conversation.
May 1 2018Lauer allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over five innings in a no-decision Monday against the Giants.Lauer recovered well from a disastrous first start last time out against the Rockies, when he served up six earned runs in just three innings. He gave up three runs on a pair of extra-base hits in the first inning, but settled down admirably with four shutout innings from there. Lauer relied primarily on his fastball, but his cutter was nasty, as he used it to rack up four swinging strikes on just 11 pitches. Lauer is just 22 years old and has had to make his first two starts in hostile environments; we'll see if he can shine when he makes his home debut this Sunday against the Dodgers.
Apr 24 2018Lauer (0-1) gave up seven runs (six earned) on six hits in a loss to the Rockies on Tuesday, striking out three and walking four.Coors Field is a rough place to make your first big-league start. Lauer held the Rockies to singles, but walked the bases loaded twice in the first two innings. The second time resulted in a grand slam by Trevor Story. The 22-year-old lefty put up decent numbers last year across High-A and Double-A ball, posting a 6-8 record, 3.30 ERA, 1.25 WHIP with 132 strikeouts in 122.2 innings. At the Triple-A level this year, Lauer was 2-1 in three starts with a 3.00 ERA and 0.94 WHIP. Should he remain in the rotation, Lauer is slated to take on the Giants in San Francisco for his next start.
Apr 24 2018Lauer had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso and will start Tuesday's game against the Rockies. As expected, Lauer will make his major-league debut after impressing in a trio of starts with the Chihuahuas, compiling a 3.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB through 18 innings. While the 22-year-old has some pedigree (25th overall pick in 2016), it would be unwise to expect much from him in his first big-league start, as he's facing a difficult Rockies lineup in one of the most hitter friendly parks in the majors.
Apr 16 2018Lauer struck out 10 batters across six scoreless innings Sunday in Triple-A El Paso's 10-0 win over Las Vegas. He limited the opposition to three hits and walked two in the 97-pitch outing. The 10 strikeouts matched a career high for Lauer in the professional ranks and boosted his total to 19 over 18 frames in the Pacific Coast League this season. The 2016 first-round pick has moved quickly through the San Diego system and could garner a look from the big club at some point during the second half of the campaign, but fantasy expectations should be tempered if he receives a promotion. While the 22-year-old lefty has impressed during each of his minor-league stops to date, his below-average fastball velocity along with a dearth of plus secondary offerings in his arsenal limits his upside to that of a back-end starter over the long haul.
Mar 22 2018Lauer was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday. The 22-year-old lefty had a solid run with the big league club this spring, notching a 2.53 ERA to go with a 1.12 WHIP over 10.2 innings. He also fanned 10 batters in that stretch while allowing three walks. However, with Opening Day looming, the Padres need to start trimming down the numbers in big league camp, so Lauer's reassignment was expected at some point before the start of the major league season. According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic San Diego, Laurer will likely begin the season at Triple-A El Paso and is a candidate to join the Padres later in the season.
Jul 11 2017Lauer has allowed only two runs over his first 12.2 innings out of the starting rotation for Double-A San Antonio.Lauer opened the season with High-A Lake Elsinore but was promoted to Double-A San Antonio on June 28 after stifling his High-A competition to the tune of a 2.79 ERA and 29.6 percent strikeout rate over 67.2 innings. The southpaw is displaying similar prowess in the higher minor-league level, as he currently holds a 1.42 ERA and 13:2 K:BB ratio over his first two starts with San Antonio.
