May 16 2024German allowed one run while striking out four over four innings in his season debut Tuesday with Single-A Bradenton. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's his first game action since last July, as the Yankees placed German on the restricted list in August following a clubhouse incident. He became a free agent after being outrighted off New York's 40-man roster and eventually signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates in March. German could eventually become a rotation option for Pittsburgh later this season, but it's unlikely to be anytime soon.
Mar 15 2024German signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Friday and was invited to major-league spring training, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite throwing the 24th perfect game in MLB history last season, German only turned in a 4.56 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 108.2 innings. German will be given a chance to prove himself during the final weeks of spring training, and he will make $1.25 million this season if he makes the MLB roster. His new deal also includes a $2.25 million club option for 2025.
Nov 2 2023The Yankees outrighted German (personal) to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German missed the final two months of the 2023 season after voluntarily submitting to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse in early August. The 31-year-old right-hander has now been removed from the 40-man roster in New York and can head into free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed.
Aug 2 2023German was placed on the restricted list Wednesday after agreeing to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being," reads a statement from the Yankees. "We will respect his privacy as he begins this process." Nestor Cortes (shoulder) has cut short his minor-league rehab assignment and is presumably going to take over German's spot in the rotation beginning Saturday against the Astros. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said German will not return this season, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv.
Jul 31 2023German (arm) threw five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Rays. He gave up two hits and two walks and struck out four in a no-decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was originally scheduled to start Monday, only for the Yankees to scratch him hours before the contest after manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander experienced discomfort in his armpit area Sunday. The Yankees planned to have him visit a doctor shortly before the game, and German was apparently given the green light to work out of the bullpen after starter Jhony Brito was lifted after giving up five runs in four innings. Based on how he fared in relief Monday, German looks to be fully healthy, so he should be ready to return to a traditional starting role when his next turn in the rotation comes up this weekend versus the Astros.
Jul 26 2023German (5-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees were downed 9-3 by the Mets, coughing up six runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over six innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had little trouble with most of the Mets' lineup, but Pete Alonso was his nemesis, launching homers off German in the third and sixth innings. On the bright side, he did strike out nine batters for the third straight outing, and German has a 1.25 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings over four July starts, albeit with a 5.64 ERA. He'll try to keep the ball in the yard in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come at home early next week against the Rays.
Jul 18 2023German (5-6) allowed five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out nine over six innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German has struck out nine in three of his last four starts, but he was unable to contain the Angels' offense. Two of the four hits he allowed went for extra bases, and he also allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in this outing. The right-hander is now at a 4.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 101:31 K:BB through 97.2 innings through 18 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Mets next week.
Jul 9 2023German did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks over six innings in a 7-4 loss to the Cubs. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German turned in a quality start Sunday, allowing just one hit while pitching into the sixth inning for the second time in his last five appearances. German enters the All-Star break on a high note, owning a 1.40 ERA and a 23:3 K:BB across his last three outings (19.1 innings). However, fantasy managers should proceed with caution with the 30-year-old, as he carried a 5.10 ERA and a 69:25 K:BB on the year prior to his three recent starts.
Jul 3 2023German allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits and no walks while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against Baltimore on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first start since tossing the 24th perfect game in MLB history last Wednesday, German gave up a season-high nine hits. Only one of those (a double) went for extra bases, but the Orioles generated constant enough traffic to make German labor, and the right-hander exited with 86 pitches on his ledger following back-to-back Baltimore singles with one out in the fifth frame. Though the brilliance of German's perfecto will understandably linger for some time, fantasy managers should note that the hurler has otherwise struggled of late, failing to complete five innings in three of his past four starts and posting an 8.20 ERA (even including the perfect game) over 18.2 innings during that span.
Jun 28 2023German (5-5) threw the 24th perfect game in major-league history Wednesday versus the Athletics. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After back-to-back awful starts versus the Red Sox and the Mariners, in which he allowed 17 runs (15 earned) over just 5.1 innings, German responded with the pinnacle of his career. The right-hander was also pretty efficient, throwing 99 pitches (72 strikes) to complete the rare feat. This was the first perfect game in the majors since Felix Hernandez's on Aug. 15, 2012. German joins Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone as Yankees to throw perfect games. For the season, German now owns a 4.54 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 78:25 K:BB over 81.1 innings across 15 starts. His encore is tentatively scheduled for a home game versus the Orioles next week.
Jun 22 2023German (4-5) took the loss against Seattle on Thursday, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was pounded almost immediately by the Mariners, who put up four runs on four hits against him in the first inning. Things didn't get better for the right-hander from there, as Seattle went on to put up six more runs against him -- four via solo homers -- before he was mercifully pulled with one out in the fourth. This was the second consecutive disastrous performance for German, who has yielded 17 runs (15 earned) over 5.1 frames across his past two starts. The rough stretch has inflated his ERA from 3.49 to 5.10, and German may need to turn things around soon to hold onto a rotation spot with Carlos Rodon (back/forearm) nearing his season debut, Clarke Schmidt pitching well and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) resuming a throwing program.
Jun 17 2023German (4-4) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks over two innings in a 15-5 loss against the Red Sox. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German held Boston to just one run across six innings during his last start, but the Red Sox got to him early and often Friday. The seven earned runs were a season-worst mark for the right-hander, who now holds a 4.30 ERA over 13 appearances (69 innings). His 1.09 WHIP and 65:23 K:BB suggest German has ran into a bit of bad luck, but the issue appears to be his consistency, as he hasn't been able to string together more than two quality starts in a row before succumbing to a blowup outing like Friday.
Jun 10 2023German (4-3) allowed a run on six hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings to earn the win Saturday over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German limited the damage to a Rafael Devers solo home run in the sixth inning. While German has given up a homer in each of his last three starts, he's been able to cover 19 innings while allowing just six runs in that span. The right-hander has a solid 3.49 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP and 64:21 K:BB through 67 innings over 12 starts this season, emerging as a reliable innings-eater. He's lined up for a rematch with the Red Sox in Boston next week.
Jun 4 2023German allowed one run on four hits and a walk over 6.2 innings Sunday. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German rolled through six shutout frames before coughing up a solo homer to J.D. Martinez in the seventh inning. Over his last six starts, German has allowed two or fewer runs in five of them, lowering his season ERA to 3.69 through 61 innings. He's allowed a homer in two straight starts after not giving one up in four consecutive outings. The 30-year-old is currently projected to face the Red Sox at home in his next start.
May 30 2023German improved to 3-3 in Monday's 10-4 win over the Mariners, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was making his first start since May 16 after completing a 10-game ban for using a foreign substance on the mound. With 53 strikeouts, German is already on the verge of surpassing last season's total of 58, and he's boasting an elite 0.98 WHIP. German is tentatively slated to face the Dodgers on the road in his next start.
May 28 2023The Yankees reinstated German (suspension) from the restricted list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: New York cleared a spot on the 26-man active roster for German by optioning right-hander Randy Vasquez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Saturday's 3-2 win over the Padres in 10 innings. Now that he's completed his 10-game suspension, German is slated to move back into the rotation Monday to start the Yankees' series opener in Seattle.
May 23 2023German (suspension) is slated to rejoin the Yankees' rotation on Monday in Seattle, manager Aaron Boone told the Talkin' Yanks podcast Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German is eligible to return from his foreign substance suspension Sunday but will instead be back a day after that as the Yankees begin a road trip. The right-hander will be pitching on 12 days' rest against the Mariners.
May 17 2023German was suspended 10 games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday for violating the league's foreign substance policy, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was given an undisclosed fine, as well. German was ejected from Tuesday's start against the Blue Jays after three innings after umpires found what they believe was a foreign substance on his right hand. The pitcher will not appeal and will begin serving the suspension immediately, so he'll be eligible to return May 28.
May 16 2023German was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays after he was found to have a foreign substance on his hand, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. He allowed no runs over three innings with two strikeouts before the ejection. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German will be facing a 10-game suspension -- pending appeal -- after being removed from the game before the start of the fourth inning. Ian Hamilton has taken over for German on the mound. This is not the first time that there's been controversy involving German and substances, as the right-hander was checked twice in a start against the Twins in the middle of April. Assuming the suspension is upheld, the Yankees will need to make a change to their rotation over the weekend.
May 11 2023German (2-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over 5.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German pitched well, but his teammates couldn't help him out. An Anthony Rizzo error led to the Rays' first run of the game. Ron Marinaccio came on in relief of German with two outs and a runner on first and allowed three runs to score before picking up an out. Plus, the Yankees offense failed to score until the ninth inning. German has surrendered just four earned runs over his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.54 to 4.00.
May 7 2023German allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings against Tampa Bay on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German started the outing on a rough note, yielding a hit to each of the first two batters he faced and giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. After that, he held Tampa's potent lineup mostly in check, allowing just one more hit and no more runs. German didn't get the offensive support he needed to pick up the win, but a late Yankees rally resulted in the Rays' seventh loss of the season. The right-hander has given up two or fewer runs in four of his seven appearances this season, and overall he has a 4.35 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 44:12 K:BB across 39.1 innings.
May 2 2023German did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over 8.1 innings during a 3-2 loss to the Guardians. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a one-out single by Amed Rosario in the first, German retired 11 straight batters before walking Josh Bell to begin the fifth. Following the walk, the right-hander got back on track and recorded 13 straight outs before Steven Kwan singled with one out in the ninth. German, who had thrown 88 pitches (65 strikes), was pulled following the base hit, but Clay Holmes couldn't maintain the shutout and ultimately surrendered the game-tying hit to Josh Naylor. It was the first time this season German took a game into the ninth and fifth time he's recorded at least six strikeouts. His 4.46 ERA still needs work, but his 0.90 WHIP and 39:10 K:BB through 34.1 innings suggests he's on the right track and may have been a victim of some bad luck to start the campaign. German will look to build off his dominating performance during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to occur during a four-game set versus the Rays this coming weekend.
Apr 5 2023German (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees fell 4-1 to the Phillies, giving up four runs on four hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The strikeouts were impressive and German generated 15 swinging strikes among his 75 pitches, but homers by Kyle Schwarber and Brandon Marsh -- as well as a lack of run support -- stuck the right-hander with the loss. It's still an encouraging first outing of the season, and German will look to build on it in his next start, likely to come this weekend in Baltimore.
Apr 2 2023German threw a bullpen session Sunday and said he is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Phillies at Yankee Stadium, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German initially looked on track to make his first start of the season in Sunday's series finale with the Giants, but the Yankees are instead turning to rookie Jhony Brito to take the hill in what will be his major-league debut. The Yankees haven't indicated that the decision to push German's first start back a couple of days was the result of a health-related setback; instead, it's plausible that he was pushed to the end of the pitching schedule due to his rough showing in spring training. Over his four Grapefruit League starts, German was tagged for 10 earned runs on 14 hits and a walk while striking out 11 over 10.1 innings.
Mar 18 2023German pitched 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Tigers on Friday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was shelled by Detroit in the outing, and the hits against him were neither quiet nor lucky. The Tigers racked up five extra-base knocks against the right-hander, including four home runs. German also hit two batters as he clearly struggled to command his pitches. This was easily his worst outing of the spring, as he had allowed just three runs (and no homers) over 7.2 innings before the blow-up. With that in mind, German is still expected to have a spot in the rotation when the season begins, especially with Carlos Rodon (forearm) expected to miss multiple starts.
Mar 9 2023German is expected to be part of the Yankees' Opening Day rotation following the injury to Carlos Rodon (forearm), Erik Boland of Newsdayreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was almost surely ticketed for the rotation anyway once Frankie Montas (shoulder) went down, but the Rodon injury cinches it. German will likely be joined by Clarke Schmidt. German held a 3.61 ERA over 15 appearances -- 14 starts -- for the Yankees last season, although that came with just 58 strikeouts over 72.1 innings. He's more of a streaming option for standard-sized fantasy leagues.
Mar 1 2023German hurled 2.1 innings against Washington in a Grapefruit League game Wednesday, allowing one run on one hit while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Clarke Schmidt began his spring with a dominant start Sunday, the pressure was on German -- who is competing with Schmidt for the Yankees' fifth-starter role -- to keep pace. German did just that Wednesday, as the only tally against him came in the third inning, when he allowed an infield single to begin the frame that the Nationals converted to a run after German departed the contest. The position battle between German and Schmidt is one to keep an eye on throughout March, and it's quite possible that whichever pitcher has the better spring will end up in the rotation to start the campaign while the other begins in the bullpen.
Jan 14 2023German and the Yankees agreed to a one-year contract Friday, avoiding arbitration. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deal has little bearing on German's fantasy value, as he would have remained a Yankee even if an arbiter were needed. His fantasy appeal did get a bump Saturday, however, with the news that Frankie Montas is expected to miss at least a month with shoulder inflammation. German appears to have the inside track to open the season as the Yankees' fifth starter, with Clarke Schmidt his primary competition.
Oct 5 2022German (2-5) got the loss after he tossed 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six batters Wednesday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was ineffective Wednesday against the Rangers, giving up four runs while allowing eight batters to reach base. The outing was only third time all year that he gave up multiple home runs, giving up two solo shots in the contest. German will finish the regular season with a 3.61 ERA and 1.16 WHIP while punching out 58 batters over 72.1 innings in 15 appearances including 14 starts.
Sep 30 2022German (2-4) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing a run in the first inning, German kept Baltimore scoreless for the following four frames before he was tagged with another run in the sixth. The 30-year-old is now sporting a 3.31 ERA with a 52:18 K:BB through 68 frames this season. German is lined up to make his final start of the regular season in Texas next week.
Sep 25 2022German gave up three earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings in a 7-5 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox got to German with a pair of home runs in the second inning off the bats of Triston Casas and Reese McGuire. German has bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen recently, and he threw only 66 pitches in this contest. It was his first start since Sept. 9 against the Twins. The 30-year-old right-hander has been fairly effective in both roles for the Yankees despite being sidelined with a shoulder injury earlier in the season. German has a respectable 3.30 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 62.2 innings pitched, and his next expected start tentatively lines him up against the Orioles.
Sep 20 2022German will start Saturday's game against the Red Sox and should stick in the rotation through the rest of the season, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Frankie Montas (shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day injured list and questionable to return this season, German should operate as the fifth starter until further notice. He has a 1.84 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 18 strikeouts over his last 29.1 innings.
Sep 19 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that German is likely to rejoin the rotation at some point during the team's four-game series against the Red Sox during the upcoming week with Frankie Montas (shoulder) likely heading to the injured list, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In anticipation of Luis Severino's (lat) return from the 60-day IL on Wednesday, German was moved to the bullpen for the Yankees' series in Milwaukee this past weekend. He struck out two over 1.2 scoreless innings in relief in Friday's 7-6 loss to the Brewers, which ended up functioning as more of a bullpen day for the Yankees after Montas departed his start midway through the fourth inning due to shoulder discomfort. Montas later underwent an MRI, and while the team hasn't provided an update on the extent of his injury, he'll have a tough time gaining clearance before the end of the regular season. His expected absence paves the way for German to recapture a spot at the back end of the rotation.
Sep 11 2022German issued one walk and struck one batter in a scoreless inning against the Rays on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was starting on short rest and threw just 14 pitches while the Yankees ended up using eight pitchers in the blowout win. He lowered his season ERA to 3.21 with a 39:13 K:BB through 56 frames. German's next outing will likely be in Milwaukee next week.
Sep 10 2022German will start Sunday's home game against the Rays, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings Wednesday against the Twins, and he'll make a start on short rest during Sunday's series finale against the Rays. It's possible that the right-hander will be on a pitch count since he'll be starting sooner than expected.
Sep 8 2022German didn't factor into the decision during a 5-4 extra-innings win over the Twins in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 63 of 90 pitches for strikes en route to his fourth straight quality start and fifth in his last six outings. German sports a 2.41 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB through 37.1 innings over the latter stretch, and while he hasn't been dominant, the 30-year-old is providing the Yankees' rotation with some much-needed stability.
Sep 3 2022German (2-3) took the loss Friday as the Yankees were routed 9-0 by the Rays, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While German was far from dominant, he did toss 60 of 88 pitches for strikes en route to his third straight quality start. The right-hander was let down by his offense and his defense however, an all-too common occurrence for the Yankees of late. Over seven outings since the beginning of August, German boasts a 2.18 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB through 41.1 innings.
Aug 28 2022German registered a no-decision during Saturday's 3-2 loss against Oakland, allowing three hits with five strikeouts across 7.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his eighth start of the season, German and Oakland starter Adam Oller engaged in an unlikely pitcher's duel that marked the former's first scoreless outing of the campaign. The 30-year-old found the zone with an impressive 60 of 79 pitches and has now surrendered one run or fewer in four of his last five starts. German sports a 3.19 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 31 strikeouts across 42.1 innings and is projected to toe the rubber again next weekend in Tampa Bay.
Aug 26 2022The Yankees list German (calf) as their starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his last outing Monday against the Mets, German covered a season-long 6.1 innings despite taking a 104 mile-per-hour line drive off his right calf in the fourth inning. He was able to pitch through the pain before being lifted midway through the seventh, though German told Marly Rivera of ESPN.com a day later that his calf felt extremely sore. On a more positive note, all imaging revealed nothing concerning, and German appears as though he'll be ready to take the hill on his normal four days' rest this weekend. Unless his calf bothers him again during the start, German shouldn't face any major workload restrictions Saturday.
Aug 22 2022German (2-2) secured the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three over 6.1 innings Monday against the Mets. He was struck in the calf by a comebacker in the fourth inning and remained in the game, but he was spotted limping in the clubhouse after the victory, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German stated after the game that he was already feeling a bit sore, but that he expects to feel better soon. He pitched well in the series opener, with his only earned run allowed coming on a Daniel Vogelbach homer in the top of the seventh. The team will likely re-evalute the right-hander over the next few days to determine if German can make his next scheduled start, which tentatively lines up for Sunday in Oakland.
Aug 18 2022German did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German surrendered three doubles, two of which came off the bat of third baseman Yandy Diaz, accounting for all three runs against him . The righty has allowed five or more hits in five of his six starts during 2022 but hasn't served a home run in three straight starts. Prior to this outing, the had allowed two runs or fewer in four straight appearances.
Aug 12 2022German allowed one run on five hits in six innings Friday against the Red Sox, striking out four while walking two. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German had a runner reach second base in three of the first four frames, but the only run he allowed was on a J.D. Martinez single in the fourth inning. He faced the minimum over his final two innings to complete his longest start of the year. After missing the first half of the year with a shoulder injury and getting off to a slow start upon his return, he's now had three straight solid outings, allowing a total of four runs over that stretch.
Aug 6 2022German (1-2) took the loss during Saturday's 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German surrendered his lone run in the first inning on consecutive two-out hits but shut down St. Louis' the rest of the way, including retiring the final six batters he faced. Since allowing a combined seven runs in 7.2 innings in his first two starts, the 30-year-old has kept the damage to three runs across 10 innings in his last two turns. It amounts to a subpar 5.09 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with 13 strikeouts in 17.2 innings, though German is trending in the right direction. He's scheduled to take the mound again next weekend against Boston.
Aug 1 2022German (1-1) earned the win over Seattle on Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out one batter over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was far from dominant in the outing, as he struck out only one batter and walked three. However, the right-hander was able to keep the damage on the scoreboard to two runs and got plenty of support from his offense to notch his first victory in his third start of the campaign. Since returning from the injured list July 21, German has given up 13 runs (nine earned) over 12.2 innings while posting a 10:6 K:BB. It's unclear if he'll remain in the rotation given the Yankees' acquisition of Frankie Montas on Monday.
Jul 27 2022German allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven in 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Mets on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German gave up five runs in three innings versus the Astros in his season debut last week, but he fared better against the Mets in his second start. He gave up a solo home run to Pete Alonso and an RBI single to Francisco Lindor. German threw 52 of 82 pitches for strikes, so he's just about stretched out fully already and will likely face only minimal restrictions going forward. He's on track for a home start versus the Mariners next week.
Jul 25 2022German is scheduled to start Wednesday's road game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German will receive a second turn through the rotation despite struggling mightily in his season debut last Thursday as he made his return from the 60-day injured list due to a shoulder issue that had sidelined him since the spring. In a tough road matchup with a potent Houston lineup, German lasted just three innings and gave up five earned runs on six hits and a walk. While Luis Severino (lat) is facing an uncertain timeline for a return, German looks like he'll get at least a few turns as the Yankees' No. 5 starter, but manager Aaron Boone may not hesitate to go in a different direction if German isn't able to right the ship soon. Prospect JP Sears looms as a viable alternative to German in the rotation, and the Yankees could also look to acquire a starting pitcher prior to the Aug. 2 trade deadline if a long-term absence is in the forecast for Severino.
Jul 21 2022German (0-1) allowed five earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two across three innings to take the loss in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was activated from the injured list prior to the start to make his season debut. He faced a tough test and served up back-to-back homers in the opening frame. German also allowed consecutive doubles in the second frame to account for his rough outing. Despite a poor season debut, German should have the chance to stick in the rotation so long as Luis Severino (shoulder) remains sidelined.
Jul 16 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that German (shoulder) could fill the rotation spot of Luis Severino (lat) after the All-Star break, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German made his final rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing three hits and one walk while striking out one. He threw 65 pitches in the outing, so he's at least within range of a starter's workload. German will likely be on a pitch count for a start or two if he does move into the big-league rotation, and it's not yet clear how long Severino will be out, so expectations should be tempered in terms of German's second-half outlook in fantasy.
Jul 14 2022German (shoulder) is scheduled to make the fifth start of his rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yankees manager Aaron Boone left the door open for German to be activated from the 60-day injured list this weekend if the big club needs an extra arm out of the bullpen for its three-game series with the Red Sox, but for the time being, the 29-year-old right-hander is on track to make what should be his final rehab start. German tossed four scoreless innings and threw 53 pitches in his most recent rehab outing July 9, and he should be close to fully stretched out following Friday's start. At the moment, the Yankees don't have an opening in the rotation available for German coming out of the All-Star break, though that could change if the shoulder tightness Luis Severino experienced during his start Wednesday against the Reds forces him to the IL.
Jul 9 2022German (shoulder) threw four scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out four in a rehab outing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German threw 53 pitches in the longest outing of his rehab assignment. The Yankees haven't determined the next step in German's return, though it's possible that he makes his next appearance in the majors.
Jul 4 2022German (shoulder) tossed four innings in a rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German didn't walk any batters and threw 39 of 49 pitches for strikes in his third rehab outing. He has compiled a 0.87 ERA and 0.48 WHIP along with a 6:0 K:BB across 10.1 innings in his trio of minor-league appearances thus far. It's unclear how many more rehab outings he'll make or what role he'll take when he returns to the big-league club.
Jun 29 2022German (shoulder) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing 39 pitches in his first rehab outing with Single-A Tampa last week, German upped that count slightly to 43 pitches Tuesday. Twenty-nine of his offerings were strikes, and he has now racked up 6.1 scoreless frames over two rehab starts. It's uncertain how long German will be rehabbing in the minors, and there isn't a clear path to a rotation spot waiting for him in the majors. However, he's pitched well enough so far to be worth consideration in deep fantasy leagues in case a big-league starting slot does open up.
Jun 26 2022German (shoulder) is scheduled to make his next rehab appearance Tuesday with Double-A Somerset, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German will make a two-level jump in competition after he tossed three scoreless innings while giving up one hit and no walks in his first rehab outing Wednesday with Single-A Tampa. He threw 39 pitches in that start and will presumably look to eclipse the 50-pitch plateau in Tuesday's contest. Though the Yankees are having German build up for a starting role, he likely won't have a spot waiting for him in the big-league rotation if the team's current five starters all remain healthy by the time he's ready to return from the 60-day injured list.
Jun 23 2022German (shoulder) completed three scoreless innings with Single-A Tampa on Wednesday, allowing one hit. He did not walk or strike out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German threw 39 pitches, 27 of which were strikes, in his first game action of the campaign. The right-hander is rehabbing from a right shoulder impingement that first popped up during the offseason. He's expected to stretch out as a starter during his time in the minors, though it's unclear how long the rehab assignment will last.
Jun 20 2022German (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Single-A Tampa, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since German has been on the injured list all season with right shoulder impingement syndrome, he'll likely require several outings in the minors before being activated. German has made 56 of his 70 appearances with the Yankees over the past three seasons as a starter, but unless the big club endures a rash of injuries to its rotation in the weeks to come, he'll likely have to settle for a relief role once he's reinstated. German still has a minor-league option remaining, so the Yankees could choose to send him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at the conclusion of his rehab assignment if the organization is still keen on having him stay stretched out for starting duties.
Jun 16 2022German (shoulder) threw three innings of live batting practice Wednesday and has been cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German had to face hitters once more prior to returning to game action in the minors, and he'll now be able to begin a rehab assignment after getting through his throwing session without any issues. The right-hander will likely require several rehab starts before returning from the injured list, and the Yankees plan to build him up as a starter during his time with a minor-league affiliate.
Jun 15 2022German (shoulder) will toss three innings against live hitters Wednesday before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Previous reports indicated that German would make his next throwing appearance in a minor-league uniform, but the organization has instead decided to have him toss one more session of live batting practice. If that goes well, it is expected that the right-hander will then join a minor-league squad for what will probably be an extended rehab assignment. German will likely be built up as a starter during the rehab stint, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Jun 11 2022German (shoulder) will next throw as part of a minor-league rehab assignment, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German tossed a three-inning simulated game Thursday and has come far enough in his recovery from a right shoulder impingement to embark on a rehab assignment in the minors. Since he hasn't yet logged any game action this season, it is likely that German will need multiple rehab outings before the Yankees consider bringing him up to the majors.
Jun 7 2022German (shoulder) will likely throw multiple innings the next time he tosses from a mound, and that could soon be followed by a rehab assignment, Brian Hall of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German has yet to pitch this season as a result of shoulder issues that have been bothering him since January, but he appears to be moving close to a minor-league rehab assignment. The right-hander is likely still weeks away from being ready to return to the majors, and it's unclear if he'll even have a spot on the big-league roster when he's back to full health.
Jun 3 2022German (shoulder) is expected to throw a sim game in the coming days, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He could start a rehab assignment if the sim game goes well. German has been sidelined all season with a shoulder impingement. Given the quality of the Yankees' rotation, he could be optioned to Triple-A once healthy or he could be used as a multi-inning reliever.
May 29 2022German (shoulder) has been throwing live batting practices, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, and he could begin a rehab assignment soon, according to the Associated Press. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is currently on the 60-day IL, but he is "doing really well" according to manager Aaron Boone. German has been working to build up his arm at the Yankees' complex in Tampa, Florida, by throwing to hitters there. He appears to be nearing the next phase of his rehab, which would likely involve a stint with a minor-league club.
May 15 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently indicated that German (shoulder) could stretch out to work as a starter when he begins his minor-league rehab assignment, Joey Pollizze of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German is still on the 60-day injured list, but he's close to being eligible to return. The right-hander is slated to throw live batting practice at some point this week and could progress to a minor-league rehab assignment soon thereafter. Though the Yankees haven't yet indicated what role German will have upon his return, Boone's comments suggest that he is at least being considered for a starting role. That may be dependent on an injury or require the team to go to a six-man rotation, however, as all five starters are currently healthy and pitching well.
May 9 2022German (shoulder) has thrown multiple bullpen sessions and is expected to face live batting practice soon, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German has missed the entirety of the 2022 campaign so far while dealing with right shoulder impingement syndrome, but manager Aaron Boone said Monday that "everything is going well, according to plan," setting the right-hander up to face live BP in the near future. The 29-year-old has been able to throw all of his pitches at his bullpen sessions, a positive sign for his eventual return in early-mid June following a likely multi-outing rehab assignment. German posted a 4.58 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 98.1 innings last year, racking up 98 strikeouts while starting 18 games and appearing in 22 total. The Yankees have yet to decide what his role will be when he ultimately returns.
May 2 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that German (shoulder) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session during the week of April 25 and is progressing well, Jordan Wolf of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was placed on the 60-day injured list in mid-March after being diagnosed with right shoulder impingement syndrome, but he has had "no issues to this point" in his recovery, according to Boone. The right-hander was considered a candidate for a rotation spot heading into spring training after posting a 4.58 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 22 outings -- 18 of which were starts -- last season. It remains to be seen what German's role will be upon his return.
Mar 20 2022German (shoulder) is playing catch from 60 feet, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German is on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement but recently started up his throwing program. It's unclear exactly how long he's expected to be sidelined, but he won't be eligible to return until after the designated 60 days.
Mar 18 2022German's injury was diagnosed as right shoulder impingement syndrome Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reports of shoulder issues popped up at the start of the week, but German hit the 60-day injured list Thursday before a specific diagnosis has emerged. He now has that diagnosis, though a precise timeline for his return is not yet clear.
Mar 17 2022German (shoulder) landed on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reports of shoulder troubles for German surfaced earlier in the week, and while the specifics of his injury are not yet clear, he's evidently dealing with a fairly serious issue. He'll be ineligible to return before early June. His absence could cement Nestor Cortes' hold on a rotation role, barring any further additions. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the Yankees to add new signee Anthony Rizzo.
Mar 14 2022Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that German had some shoulder issues pop up in late January that delayed the start of the right-hander's throwing program, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While German has now started his throwing program now that spring training is underway, his offseason preparation was slowed by his injury. It's not yet clear whether the delay will impact his ability to build up in time for the start of the regular season, especially since pitchers have an abbreviated spring training in 2022. If the right-hander isn't ready to join the starting rotation in time for Opening Day, Jameson Taillon (ankle) and Michael King are candidates to see starts early in the year.
Nov 30 2021German agreed to a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the Yankees on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German ended up starting in 18 of 22 appearances for New York last season, and he posted a 4.58 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 98:27 K:BB across 98.1 innings. He'll be in the mix for a rotation spot again during spring training.
Oct 2 2021German gave up two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out three over 1.1 innings against Tampa Bay on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was activated from the injured list Sept. 22, but Friday marked his first appearance since July 31. The long layoff showed through his control, as German threw only half of his 32 pitches for strikes and walked a pair of batters. The two free passes came back to bite him when Wander Franco brought both runners home on a two-out, ninth-inning single. Given his long layoff and the Yankees' bullpen depth, German's odds of making the team's playoff roster -- should New York qualify for the postseason -- may be quite low.
Sep 22 2021The Yankees reinstated German (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outfielder Estevan Florial was sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to open up a roster spot for German, who had been on the shelf since Aug. 1 with a right shoulder strain. German made a pair of two-inning rehab appearances with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to being activated, and he'll be rejoining New York in a bullpen role after having previously started in 18 of his 21 appearances on the season with the big club.
Sep 19 2021German (shoulder) could rejoin the Yankees in the coming days, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German made his second minor-league rehab appearance Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over two innings. His next outing is expected to be out of the Yankees bullpen, where he is likely to remain for the rest of the campaign. German has made 21 appearances for the big club this season, with 18 of those coming as a starter.
Sep 15 2021German (shoulder) is scheduled to make another rehab appearances Friday or Saturday before returning from the injured list, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German delivered two scoreless frames for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, and he'll make one more appearance in the minors before rejoining the Yankees. Assuming all goes well, the right-hander should be activated from the injured list early next week.
Sep 14 2021Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that the team is hoping German (shoulder) will be able to be activated from the 10-day injured list during the upcoming weekend series against Cleveland, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees are going to wait to see how German responds to his rehab outing Tuesday before officially determining when he'll be activated. The right-hander initially landed on the IL in late July with a right rotator cuff strain, and he later faced a setback in his recovery when soreness returned in mid-August. He's expected to rejoin the New York bullpen once activated.
Sep 12 2021German (shoulder) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Tuesday, Justin Shackil of SiriusXM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German's shoulder strain has kept him out of game action since the end of July, so it is unlikely that he'll have enough time to build back up as a starter. However, if the right-hander's rehab stint goes well, he could rejoin the Yankees in a relief role before the end of the regular season.
Sep 8 2021Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that German (shoulder) could be ready to face live hitters soon, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boone's comments come a day after German threw a bullpen session, during which the right-hander used all of his pitches. German is expected to throw another side session within the next few days, and if all goes well, he could take the next step forward in his recovery from a strained shoulder by facing hitters. German looks on track to return from the 10-day injured list before the end of the season, though he likely won't have enough time to build up for a starting role.
Aug 29 2021German (shoulder) played catch this weekend and could soon throw a bullpen session, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was previously reported German was expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend, but he apparently wasn't quite ready for mound work after experiencing some soreness following a bullpen session Aug. 18. The 29-year-old will need to continue ramping up his throwing program to have a chance of rejoining the Yankees for the stretch run.
Aug 24 2021German (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was managing some soreness after a bullpen session last week, but he's poised to retake the mound this weekend. The next step in German's rehab has yet to be decided, as the Yankees are considering a move to the bullpen to hasten his return to the majors. If the 29-year-old returns as a starter he likely won't rejoin the big-league club until at least mid-September.
Aug 21 2021Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that German (shoulder) "had some soreness" following his Wednesday bullpen session, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's most recent BP included a variety of pitches after he threw only fastballs in his previous bullpen last weekend. However, German reported feeling sore Thursday, leaving his next step unclear. Boone did not indicate how long the setback may delay German's return, if at all.
Aug 15 2021German (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander completed a bullpen session Saturday and will make a quick return to the mound two days later as he continues his throwing program. Manager Aaron Boone was uncertain whether German would embark on a rehab assignment following Monday's session.
Aug 10 2021German (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was shut down for approximately one week after landing on the injured list Aug. 1 with right shoulder inflammation. Manager Aaron Boone announced Monday that the right-hander was close to throwing again, and it sounds like he'll throw off a mound Thursday. It's not clear how many pitches German will deliver during the session, but if all goes well, it's possible he rejoins the rotation without requiring a rehab outing.
Aug 9 2021Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that German (shoulder) is close to throwing again, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German has been shut down since Aug. 1 due to a right rotator cuff strain, but Boone is optimistic that the right-hander will be able to build up his pitch count quickly after he resumes throwing. The 29-year-old recorded a 2.81 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB in 16 innings across his four starts following the All-Star break.
Aug 3 2021German (shoulder) has a right rotator cuff strain and won't throw for seven to 10 days, Brendan Kuty of NJ Advance Media reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday following his four-inning start July 31. He'll clearly need to miss more than the minimum 10 days, but it isn't clear exactly how long he's expected to be out. When asked about German's injury, manager Aaron Boone indicated, "That will shut him down for seven to 10 days, and then hopefully should be able to ramp up from there."
Aug 1 2021German was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday due to right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five over four innings in a no-decision against Miami on Saturday. He was pulled for a pinch hitter in the fifth frame, but it's unclear if that move was related to his injury. Albert Abreu was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilke-Barre to take German's place on the active roster.
Jul 25 2021German allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out 10 over seven-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Red Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but he allowed a leadoff double to Alex Verdugo. Jonathan Loaisiga came on in relief and proceeded to melt down as the Red Sox rallied for five runs to deny German the win after a stellar start. The 28-year-old dropped his ERA to 4.45 with a 1.17 WHIP and 90:23 K:BB through 93 innings. He'll look to stay in good form next weekend in Miami.
Jul 21 2021German didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Phillies after allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while fanning five across four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was never expected to pitch deep into this game considering he was on three days of rest, but he still tossed 41 of his 70 pitches for strikes while limiting the damage across the board. The right-hander has gone eight straight outings without completing the five-inning threshold, though. His next start is scheduled for the upcoming weekend series against the Red Sox on the road.
Jul 18 2021German is listed as the Yankees' probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Phillies, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German will be pitching on three days' rest after he made a relief appearance in Friday's 4-0 loss to the Red Sox, but because he only tossed one inning (17 pitches), it was comparable to a between-starts bullpen session. As such, German shouldn't face any major restrictions with his pitch count Tuesday as he steps back into the rotation.
Jul 16 2021German allowed a hit in a scoreless inning during Friday's 4-0 loss to Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was initially projected to start Thursday before that contest was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Instead of pushing him back a day, the Yankees elected to start Jordan Montgomery. Friday was the third time in 18 appearances German has worked in a relief role. The right-hander has a 4.39 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 75:19 K:BB across 82 innings overall. It's unclear when he'll next be available to make a start.
Jul 15 2021German won't pitch Thursday against the Red Sox after the game was postponed due to the Yankees' COVID-19 issues, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees are reportedly dealing with positive COVID-19 tests within their organization, so it's not yet clear when the team could take the field next. The club hasn't yet announced its pitching plans going forward.
Jul 8 2021German (tooth) earned a hold against the Mariners on Wednesday, pitching three innings and allowing three unearned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was scratched from his scheduled start after undergoing an emergency root canal earlier in the day, but he had recovered enough by the beginning of the game to be available out of the bullpen. The right-hander ended up completing three innings and throwing 47 pitches, 34 of which went for strikes. He gave up a three-run home run to Tom Murphy in the fifth frame, but all three runs that scored were unearned because the inning started with a Gio Urshela error. German set down the side in order in each of his other two frames and looked good overall considering his tooth issue. He is unlikely to rejoin the rotation until after the All-Star break given him workload Wednesday.
Jul 7 2021German was scratched from Wednesday's start in Seattle after he underwent an emergency root canal, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nick Nelson will start Wednesday's contest, though manager Aaron Boone said German will be available to enter the game if necessary. The skipper added that German may be ready to start Friday in Houston.
Jul 1 2021German did not factor in the decision against the Angels on Wednesday, completing three innings and allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's night was over after rain halted play before the fourth inning, but he likely wouldn't have gone much longer anyway after throwing 72 pitches through three frames. German gave up two first-inning runs and another in the second, and he left the bases loaded in the third (though the inning would have been over after four batters if not for an error). The poor appearance extended a stretch of four straight subpar starts for the hurler, who has posted a 9.98 ERA, 2.09 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB across 15.1 innings during that stretch. He'll attempt to the right the ship his next time out, which is likely to take place early next week at Seattle.
Jun 26 2021German (4-5) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk in a 5-3 loss to the Red Sox. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 72 pitches (46 strikes) before getting the hook with the Yankees in a 4-3 hole, and they weren't able to find an equalizer. German has failed to complete five innings in three straight starts and hasn't lasted six frames in six straight, going 0-3 with a 6.28 ERA and 24:8 K:BB through 28.2 IP over that stretch.
Jun 20 2021German did not factor in the decision against Oakland on Saturday despite allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was hurt by a pair of solo homers and a fifth-inning two-run single. He failed to set down the side in order in any frame and was ousted during the fifth inning for the second straight contest. After registering a 2.35 ERA across nine starts from April 22 to June 6, German has surrendered 11 combined earned runs over 8.1 innings across his past two starts. He'll try to get back on track when he faces Boston on the road next weekend.
Jun 13 2021German (4-4) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out two in 4.1 innings to take the loss against the Phillies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German allowed baserunners in four of the first five innings Sunday and posted his worst results of the season in the loss. The righty has now recorded a 3.88 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 65 innings across his first 12 starts of the year. He tentatively lines up to make his next appearance at home against the Athletics on Saturday.
Jun 6 2021German took the no-decision in Sunday's 6-5 loss to Boston, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite not missing many bats with only three strikeouts, German held a capable Boston offense in check aside from an Alex Verdugo solo home run. The righty has now allowed three runs or less in all 10 of his starts and sports a solid 3.12 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.
Jun 1 2021German allowed three earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out five across five innings Tuesday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German allowed only three baserunners in the start, but each of them came around to score thanks to two home runs. Long balls have been a consistent problem for German this season, as he's allowed multiple shots in five of his 10 starts and is surrendering 1.8 HR/9. Even so, he's maintained a solid 3.27 ERA with a very strong 52:10 K:BB across 55 innings on the campaign.
May 27 2021German (4-3) allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five across 5.2 innings, taking the loss to the Blue Jays on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German made very few mistakes in the loss; however, the Blue Jays took full advantage of them with a pair of home runs by Bo Bichette and Marcus Semien. The 28-year-old is having a solid season with a 3.06 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP through 50 innings. He is averaging just one walk per five innings pitched. Currently, he is not scheduled to start in the Yankees' next six games.
May 26 2021German and the Yankees won't play the Blue Jays on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in New York. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two sides will make up the game as part of a doubleheader Thursday. Expect German to start one of the two games, with Jordan Montgomery likely to start the other contest.
May 20 2021German (4-2) picked up the win Thursday after holding the Rangers scoreless across seven innings. He allowed six hits and no walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German turned in a lights-out performance, blanking his opponent for the second time this season while stretching out for a tied for season-long seven innings of work. The 28-year-old took advantage of solid command as he did not issue any free passes for the first time this year. German has now posted quality starts in five of his last six outings, going 4-0 over that span. On the season, the right-hander is pitching to the tune of a 3.05 ERA and 1.11 WHIP. He's slated to take the mound again at home Wednesday against Toronto.
May 16 2021German (3-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 8-2 victory over the Orioles, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees handed him a 3-0 lead before he even set foot on the mound in Baltimore, and German kept the O's off the board until his final inning of work. The right-hander fired 53 of 80 pitches for strikes in his second straight quality start and fourth of the year, and he'll take a 3.62 ERA and 37:8 K:BB through 37.1 innings into his next outing.
May 9 2021German allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six in 6.1 innings in Sunday's win over the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German began Sunday's game by tossing six scoreless frames, but he gave up a two-run homer with one out in the seventh inning that forced him to settle for a second straight no-decision. The right-hander has recorded a 4.02 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 31.1 innings across his first six starts of the season. German tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Baltimore on Saturday.
May 4 2021German didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Astros, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 51 of 83 pitches for strikes but didn't stick around long enough to take advantage of the Yankees' offensive eruption in the sixth inning and get credit for the win. German did serve up two more homers, the third time in five starts he's been tagged for multiple long balls, and as a result he'll take a 4.32 ERA and 25:5 K:BB through 25 innings into his next outing.
Apr 28 2021German (2-2) earned the win Wednesday, pitching seven shutout innings versus the Orioles. He allowed three hits and a walk with six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was highly effective in this AL East matchup, as no Oriole got past second base on his watch. It's the first time in four starts he hasn't allowed a run. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.05 with a 1.30 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB across 20 innings this season. The 28-year-old's next start is scheduled for Tuesday at home versus the Astros.
Apr 22 2021German (1-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings to earn the win Thursday against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German appeared to be in for a short outing, as he allowed four hits and all three runs in his first inning of work. However, he bounced back to keep the Yankees in the game long enough to earn his first win of the season. German was demoted to the alternate site earlier in the season, but he figures to remain in the rotation now that the team is faced with a heavier schedule.
Apr 21 2021German will return from the Yankees' alternate training site to start against Cleveland on Thursday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German made two starts early in the campaign and allowed seven runs across seven innings before being sent to the team's alternate site. Manager Aaron Boone suggested at the time that the move was made in response to a light schedule that saw New York play only six games in eight days, so German could be returning to the rotation for more than just a spot start. The Yankees will certainly need a fifth starter, as their next off day won't take place until May 3.
Apr 19 2021German is slated to start one of the Yankees' four games in their upcoming series against Cleveland, Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German made two starts earlier this season for New York, allowing seven runs across a combined seven innings and posting a 7:2 K:BB. He was then sent to the team's alternate training site and impressed in a Triple-A exhibition contest Saturday, allowing one unearned run on two hits across five frames. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that German will be brought back onto the active roster to face Cleveland sometime between Thursday and Sunday, though he did not specify an exact date. That decision may come down to whether the team will opt to give Gerrit Cole and/or Jordan Montgomery an extra day of rest.
Apr 11 2021Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that he expects German to rejoin the Yankees when a fifth starter is next required April 24 in Cleveland, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was unable to carry his stellar results from spring training into his first two turns of the regular season, giving up seven runs on 12 hits and two walks over seven innings en route to taking losses to the Blue Jays and Rays. New York optioned German to its alternate site following Saturday's game in Tampa Bay, but based on Boone's comments, the right-hander's demotion wasn't due solely to his pair of poor outings. With a pair of off days in the next eight days, the Yankees will instead run a streamlined four-man rotation, so German will be parked at the alternate site in the short term to give the team an extra roster spot. German still appears to have the edge over Deivi Garcia and Michael King for the fifth starter's job.
Apr 10 2021German was optioned to the Yankees' alternate training site Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was charged with his second loss of the season Saturday as he allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five in four innings against the Rays. The Yankees aren't in need of a fifth starter in the near future since they have two upcoming days off, so German will get to work on things at the team's alternate camp following an underwhelming start to the 2021 campaign.
Apr 4 2021German (0-1) gave up three runs on four hits and a walk while fanning two across three innings in Sunday's loss against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German tossed nine scoreless innings while striking out 13 and walking just one during spring training, but he wasn't able to replicate those results in the season opener and only lasted three innings before being lifted. He will try to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for April 10 on the road against the Rays.
Mar 26 2021German appears to be lined up as the Yankees' fifth starter after Deivi Garcia was optioned Friday, James Wagner of The New York Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German significantly outperformed Garcia this spring, making the Yankees' decision seemingly a fairly easy one. Garcia struck out 14 batters in 14 innings, but he also walked eight and allowed seven runs (six earned). Meanwhile, German tossed nine scoreless innings, striking out 13 while walking just one. He showed what he was capable of in 2019, backing up a respectable 4.03 ERA with a 25.8 percent strikeout rate and 6.6 percent walk rate, though exactly how much he'll resemble that pitcher this year after missing last year while suspended for domestic violence remains to be seen.
Mar 15 2021German tossed four scoreless innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game versus the Phillies, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German enjoyed an effective and efficient outing, needing only 46 pitches (35 strikes) to make it through four frames. He has been dominant so far this spring, throwing nine scoreless innings and yielding only five hits while posting a 13:1 K:BB. Though Deivi Garcia -- German's primary competition for the fifth-starter role -- has also thrown well this spring, German may be sliding ahead of him with his effectiveness in Grapefruit League action.
Mar 5 2021German tossed two scoreless innings against Detroit in a Grapefruit League game Friday, allowing one hit and striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German entered the contest having not faced big-league hitters in over 17 months, but he showed little rust in racking up four strikeouts and limiting Detroit to a Wilson Ramos double. The right-hander is battling this spring for the final spot in the Yankees' starting rotation, and he could maneuver his way into the position with more performances like the one he posted Friday.
Feb 26 2021German tossed a 20-pitch batting-practice session Thursday, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was German's first time on the mound with the Yankees since his September 2019 suspension, and manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander looked "sharp" against the five batters he faced. German is expected to compete for the team's final rotation spot during spring training, though Deivi Garcia may be the favorite to land the fifth-starter role.
Feb 17 2021German could be competing this spring for the fifth spot in the Yankees' rotation, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Deivi Garcia likely has the inside track to the final rotation spot, but manager Aaron Boone's mention of a possible competition this spring means German isn't out of the running. Given the fact that German missed the entire 2020 campaign, he would likely need to turn heads in spring training to wrest the starting spot away from Garcia, who impressed in six starts last season.
Oct 6 2020German was reinstated from the restricted list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German missed the entirety of the season due to suspension after violating the league's domestic violence policy late in the 2019 campaign. He's ineligible to participate in the postseason but could potentially figure into the Yankees' rotation plans in 2021.
Sep 21 2020German (suspension) will not pitch during the postseason, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German's suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy will expire early in the playoffs, but he won't be able to build up in time to play even a minor role. He'll be ready to go come next year's spring training, though his role at that point will be unclear as he will have gone over a year without throwing a competitive pitch.
Jul 18 2020German (suspension) will not be retiring, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German announced in a somewhat cryptic Instagram post Friday that he was stepping away from baseball. He's since deleted that post and provided another one, in which he apologized for the "unsettling post," explaining that he let his emotions get the best of him after being forced to watch his teammates get ready for the season from afar. German will miss the entirety of the season as well as the first three games of next year while serving a domestic-violence suspension.
Jul 17 2020German (suspension) announced Friday that he has left baseball, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German was ineligible to take part in the shortened 2020 season with 63 games left on his suspension, but his update posted Friday on his personal Instagram page signals that he may not return to MLB once his suspension is over. The 27-year-old has posted a 4.52 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 273:81 K:BB over 55 appearances (38 starts) in three seasons with the Yankees.
Feb 28 2020German (suspension) was involved in a car accident as a backseat passenger in the Dominican Republic on Friday, Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com reports. He was not injured. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German is not taking part in spring training as a result of the 81-game suspension handed out to him last season for violating the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy. With 63 games of the suspension remaining to be served, German won't be eligible to re-join the Yankees' roster until early June.
Feb 12 2020German (suspension) won't join the Yankees for spring training and will continue to work out at the organization's academy in his native Dominican Republic, Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per the terms of the 81-game suspension he accepted in January for violating the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy, German agreed not to pitch in any Grapefruit League contests, so the Yankees didn't see the benefit in having him report to Florida right away. German will presumably move to the United States no later than May 21, when he's first eligible to resume pitching in minor-league games in preparation for his return to the big club once his suspension is lifted. Since he already missed the Yankees' final 18 games of 2019 after being placed on administrative leave, German will have 63 games left to serve before he can be reinstated to the roster June 5.
Jan 2 2020German received an 81-game suspension Thursday for violating the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy, Hannah Keyser of Yahoo Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German missed the end of the 2019 season while the league investigated the allegations against him, and his lengthy suspension was handed down Thursday. The suspension is retroactive to September, so the right-hander will miss the first 63 games of the 2020 campaign in addition to all of spring training. He'll be first eligible to pitch June 5 against the Rays.
Sep 25 2019German's period of administrative leave was extended through the end of the World Series by MLB and the MLBPA on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German had already been ruled out through the postseason by the Yankees, so Wednesday's announcement merely makes his restriction official. His status for 2020 remains up in the air as the league investigates the incident that led to German's alleged violation of the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy.
Sep 20 2019German (administrative leave) won't pitch again this season, Buster Olney of ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German landed on administrative leave Thursday due to a violation of the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy. The timing of the incident made a return this season unlikely, something which has now been confirmed. It remains to be seen how a potential suspension will affect German's 2020 campaign.
Sep 19 2019German was placed on administrative leave Thursday under the league's domestic violence policy, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The period of leave will last up to seven days, barring an extension. There are no details regarding this issue at this point, but MLB will investigate the issue and will not comment further until the investigation is complete.
Sep 17 2019German could pitch in relief of CC Sabathia on Wednesday or could start later in the week, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German had been shifted to a long-relief role to preserve his arm as the Yankees look to manage his workload heading into the playoffs. It's possible the Yankees are waiting to see how long Sabathia is able to last. J.A. Happ's status is also up in the air as he deals with biceps tendinitis.
Sep 13 2019German (18-4) earned the win in Game 2 of a doubleheader against Detroit on Thursday, pitching four scoreless innings and giving up two hits and no walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As planned, CC Sabathia opened the game and German entered in a bulk relief role, throwing 50 pitches -- 37 of which were strikes -- in four frames. German inherited a one-run lead with the tying run in scoring position and one out in the fourth inning and quickly extinguished the threat, needing only six pitches to set the next two batters down in order. The 27-year-old then cruised through the rest of his outing, whiffing five along the way to record his 18th victory, tying Justin Verlander for tops in baseball. Despite his success as a traditional starter, German figures to continue pitching out of the bullpen for the remainder of September as the Yankees look to manage his workload and prepare him for the relief role that he will likely fill in the playoffs.
Sep 8 2019German's next appearance will come in relief of CC Sabathia on Wednesday in Detroit, as the Yankees manage his workload and prepare him for the relief role he will likely occupy in October, James Wagner of The New York Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be a piggyback situation. Sabathia has not logged more than 4.1 innings in an outing since July 16, so he and German could each log between three and four innings before turning it over to the actual relievers. This will give German a chance to qualify for a win, but it also makes him somewhat reliant on Sabathia keeping the lead. German has thrown 140.2 total innings this year after throwing 94 innings in 2018, so it's understandable that the Yankees want to dial back his usage.
Sep 6 2019German (17-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings of work Friday against the Red Sox. He struck out five while allowing four walks and three hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: German faced just one more than the minimum through three innings before things started to unravel in the fourth. A two-out rally led to a run-scoring single by Brock Holt and a three-run homer by Mitch Moreland. German was pulled after a one-out walk to Mookie Betts in the fifth inning, who would come around to score. German's strong win-loss record hides a relatively mediocre 4.21 ERA. He'll look to bring that number down Wednesday in Detroit.
Aug 31 2019German allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision against the A's on Saturday.
Aug 25 2019German (17-3) held the Dodgers to one run on five hits in six innings to take the win Sunday. He struck out five and walked two.
Aug 20 2019German (16-3) was hit with the loss against the Athletics on Tuesday, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 5.1 innings, striking out seven and walking
Aug 15 2019German is not expected to have his innings capped for the season, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Aug 14 2019German will miss out on a two-start week with the Yankees deciding not to include him among their probable pitchers for the four-game weekend series with Cleveland,

Jul 20 2018German (2-6) was roughed up for four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three across 3.2 innings as he took the loss against the Mets. He was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Friday's tilt, Marc Carig of The Athletic New York reports. The Mets put up three runs against German in the first inning, following by one more in the third. He exited the game with a 4-1 deficit. German has struggled to a 5.68 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 95:32 K:BB over 82.1 innings this season. He'll need to turn things around in the minors before he's offered another chance with the big club.
Jul 13 2018German (2-5) took the loss Friday, giving up six runs on five hits and four walks over four-plus innings while striking out six as the Yankees fell 6-5 to Cleveland. The right-hander threw only 52 of 91 pitches for strikes as he walked multiple batters for the third straight start. German continues to mix solid outings with poor ones, saddling him with a 5.49 ERA heading into the All-Star break.
Jul 8 2018German surrendered one run on four hits and two walks while fanning five over six innings Sunday against the Blue Jays, although he didn't factor into the decision.German put together a strong outing on the hill, giving up just one run on a Kendrys Morales solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. He certainly pitched well enough to pick up a win, but the Yankees didn't offer up enough run support. German has been inconsistent at times throughout the 2018 campaign, accruing a 5.06 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with an 86:26 K:BB over 11 starts (74.2 innings).
Jul 3 2018German pitched 4.1 innings during Tuesday's win over the Braves, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out six and did not qualify for the decision.German was tossing a shutout until the fifth inning when he allowed a two-run home run to Ender Inciarte and a solo shot to Ozzie Albies, and was then pulled after allowing consecutive singles. The 25-year-old has a 5.37 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 81 strikeouts across 68.2 innings with 13 home runs allowed, and next lines up to start at Toronto on Sunday.
Jul 2 2018German is listed as the Yankees' probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Braves, MLB.com reports.Due to Luis Cessa making a spot start June 27 and the Yankees having an open date in the schedule the following day, German moved to the bullpen last week as New York streamlined its rotation. With the team set to play its fifth game in five days Tuesday, German will return to a starting role and will be looking for redemption after he was tagged for six runs on nine hits over three innings by the Rays in his last turn through the rotation June 24. With an excellent 75:21 K:BB over 64.1 innings this season, German offers more upside than his 5.32 ERA indicates, but he'll need to do a better job of reining in the long ball (11 home runs allowed) in order to avoid the blowup outings that have sullied his season-long numbers.
Jun 25 2018The Yankees could elect to skip German's next scheduled turn against the Red Sox during the upcoming weekend, Mike Mazzeo of the New York Daily News reports. The Yankees are only two games ahead of Boston in the loss column entering Monday, so it makes some sense for the team to bring its top starters to the hill for the three-game series in an attempt to create separation in the standings. With that in mind, German, who was lit up for six runs in three innings Sunday against the Rays, could move to the bullpen temporarily, thereby allowing Luis Severino to start the series finale Sunday. Severino. Thanks to an off day Thursday in addition to Luis Cessa's insertion into the rotation for a spot start Wednesday, Severino would be able to take the hill Sunday on his normal four days' rest. Assuming the Yankees decide to go with Severino on Sunday, German's next start would likely come July 2 against the Braves.
Jun 24 2018German gave up six runs on nine hits and zero walks while striking out two in three innings Sunday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.Even after this blowup outing, there are some positive indicators (3.59 xFIP, 1.23 WHIP, 74:21 K:BB in 63.1 IP) with German, but as a young pitcher getting his first extended trial in the big-league rotation, there have been a lot of ups and downs that can be frustrating in fantasy. German's next start is scheduled for next Sunday at home against the Red Sox.
Jun 19 2018German (2-4) earned the win against the Mariners on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits across seven innings. He walked none and recorded nine strikeouts.German followed up his 10-strikeout performance last week with another gem Tuesday, completely stifling the Mariners' bats and throwing 67 of 96 pitches for strikes. The 25-year-old now has a 4.77 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 72 strikeouts over 60.1 innings, and is next expected to start Sunday at Tampa Bay.
Jun 14 2018German (1-4) struck out 10 batters in six innings of works, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in a 4-3 win over Tampa Bay on Thursday.German allowed a leadoff home run to Matt Duffy but was pretty solid the rest of the way. The 10 strikeouts were a career high for the Dominican-born righty, and he lowered his season ERA from 5.32 to 5.23. German will get the ball again early next week at home against Seattle.
Jun 9 2018German allowed three earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out nine across six innings Saturday against the Mets. He did not factor into the decision.German looked to be in for a disappointing start as he allowed all three of his earned runs in the first inning, but he managed to keep the Mets scoreless for his next five innings of work. He generated an impressive 19 swinging strikes on his way to nine strikeouts, matching his career-best mark. Although his 5.32 ERA is uninspiring, German has gotten a longer leash in each of his past three starts, pitching at least 5.2 innings in each of them for a total of 18.1 innings. He has taken advantage by striking out nineteen batters in that span.
Jun 4 2018German (0-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks across 6.2 innings while taking the loss Monday against the Tigers. He struck out three.German gave up some hard contact on the day and was scored upon in three different innings, including a pair of runs on three hits in the fourth. He was a bit unlucky as the bullpen allowed an inherited runner to score in the seventh, but he was still outdueled by Mike Fiers on the night. German burst onto the scene with a terrific outing roughly a month ago, but he's allowed 19 earned runs across 21 innings over four starts since then. His grasp on a rotation spot could be slipping, but he'll have another chance to right the ship this weekend against the Mets.
Jun 3 2018German will start the second game of the Yankees' doubleheader Monday against the Tigers, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. After his scheduled start Sunday against the Orioles was postponed due to inclement weather, German will just be pushed back one day in the pitching schedule to fill the opening the Yankees had for one of the doubleheader games. Had German started as anticipated Sunday, the Yankees likely would have had to turn to long reliever A.J. Cole or one of their minor-league pitchers to make a spot start for Game 2 of the twin bill.
Jun 3 2018German's scheduled start Sunday against the Orioles was postponed due to inclement weather. The Yankees and Orioles will make up the postponed contest Aug. 25 as part of a split doubleheader. Incidentally, the Yankees are already scheduled to make up a doubleheader Monday in Detroit, so it's likely that German will simply be pushed back a day in the pitching schedule to take the hill for one game of the twin bill. Luis Severino is expected to start the other game for the Yankees.
May 28 2018German (0-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out seven across 5.2 innings as he took the loss Monday against the Astros.German got off to a rough start after allowing a three-run blast to J.D. Davis in the second inning, but he settled down and came within one out of turning in a quality outing. He's yet to notch his first victory of the 2018 season, and he's accrued a 5.45 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 41 strikeouts across 34.2 innings. German's next start is slated for Saturday against the Orioles.
May 23 2018German (0-2) gave up six runs on four hits in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers, recording six strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings.German gave up a three-run homer to Jurickson Profar in the first, and then allowed two more runs in the second through a series of walks, hit batters and wild pitches. German threw three wild pitches on the night, and was at 85 pitches (50 for strikes) when he was taken out in the fourth. After throwing six hitless innings in his first start of the season on May 6, the young righty has allowed six runs in each of his last two starts. His next start will be against the Astros at home.
May 17 2018German will work out of the bullpen during the Yankees' three-game series with the Royals that begins Friday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. After an off day Monday and a postponement of Wednesday's game against the Nationals, the Yankees opted to deploy a four-man rotation this week, resulting in German's start being skipped. Despite being tagged for six runs in five innings his last time out May 12 against the Athletics, German isn't in any immediate danger of losing his rotation spot with Jordan Montgomery (elbow) unlikely to be activated from the 10-day disabled list until late June. After his brief move to the bullpen over the weekend, German will line up for his next start Tuesday against the Royals in Kansas City.
May 12 2018German had a poor showing Saturday against the Athletics, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks, striking out just one batter. He did not factor into the decision.German failed to come anywhere close to the effectiveness he showed the last time out when he struck out six and gave up no hits in six innings against the Indians. He started out well again this time, facing the minimum through three innings, but was tagged for five runs in the fourth inning, three of which came on a Khris Davis homer. His ERA now sits at 4.26 on the season, with 28 strikeouts and 12 walks in 25.1 innings. It's an unremarkable profile but one good enough to hold onto a temporary role at the back end of the Yankees' rotation. The Yankees have off days on both Monday and Thursday, so if they choose to skip their fifth starter German may not be called upon until May 22 against the Rangers.
May 6 2018German didn't factor into the decision against the Indians on Sunday despite throwing six no-hit innings, striking out nine and walking two before the Yankees eventually prevailed 7-4.With Jordan Montgomery (elbow) on the disabled list, German got the first crack at filling the rotation spot and he made the most of the opportunity, no-hitting the Twins through six innings on just 84 pitches. His relievers weren't able to see through the combined no-hit bid, but it was still a brilliant outing from the 25-year-old, who was making his first career start after working out of the bullpen prior to Montgomery's injury. While he won't be holding opponents hitless every start, German almost certainly earned another look to show he can continue to be the guy in Montgomery's absence and it's worth keeping an eye on whether he can continue to provide solid fantasy value for as long as he's in the rotation.
May 2 2018Manager Aaron Boone said German will replace Jordan Montgomery (elbow) in the starting rotation for the time being, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. With Montgomery expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks with a left elbow flexor strain, German will be afforded the first opportunity to fill in for him in the rotation. The 25-year-old came on in relief Tuesday after Montgomery exited and tossed four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four. Through five appearances this season, German owns a 3.77 ERA and 18:7 K:BB across 14.1 innings. It's unclear if he'll remain in the rotation for Montgomery's entire absence at this point, but that could depend on how he fares early on. His first start figures to come Sunday against the Indians.
May 1 2018German could start Sunday's game against the Indians if Jordan Montgomery (elbow) is placed on the disabled list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.Jordan Montgomery exited Tuesday's game against the Astros after one inning with left elbow tightness. German came on in relief and tossed four shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four. After the game, manager Aaron Boone announced that German would be the most likely candidate to fill Montgomery's spot in the rotation if his injury requires a trip to the disabled list. Montgomery is scheduled to undergo further testing on his elbow Wednesday.
Apr 7 2018German was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. With CC Sabathia (hip) landing on the 10-day DL, either German or Luis Cessa, who was also called up from Triple-A, figure to slot into the Yankees' rotation on Thursday in Boston. German was scheduled to start Saturday at Triple-A, so he would be available if the Yankees need length out of the bullpen, as he could pitch Saturday and still start Thursday on normal rest. German has not made a start in the big leagues, but has a 3.14 ERA in 14.1 inning of long relief and notched a 2.83 ERA with 81 strikeouts in 76.1 innings as a Triple-A starter last season. He could be a sneaky add in deeper leagues if he does indeed take Sabathia's spot in the rotation.
Sep 17 2017The Yankees recalled German from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.Scranton-Wilkes/Barre was officially eliminated from the International League playoffs Friday, so German will move back to the majors and provide the Yankees with some additional depth out of the bullpen the next few weeks. German, who has conceded four runs over 10.2 innings in his five appearances with the big club this season, isn't expected to see much use in high-leverage spots.
Jul 16 2017German was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. After Saturday's 16-inning affair, the Yankees were in need of fresh arms out of the bullpen for Sunday's doubleheader with the Red Sox, so German, Caleb Smith and Bryan Mitchell will move up to the big club while Jonathan Holder and Ben Heller head back to the minors. German has previously made five appearances with the Yankees this season, turning in a 3.38 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 10.2 innings.
Jun 15 2017German was recalled by the Yankees on Thursday. As expected, German rejoins the Yankees in time for the start of their series against the A's out in Oakland. He'll take the spot of Ronald Herrera, who was optioned after a rough outing against the Angels on Wednesday. German has just one major league appearance this season, but he's posted excellent numbers at Triple-A with a 3.42 ERA to go with a 1.07 WHIP and 27 strikeouts over 26.1 innings.
Jun 14 2017German is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports. With CC Sabathia expected to land on the disabled list Thursday, German will rejoin the Yankees for the second time in less than a week. The 24-year-old tossed 2.2 innings scoreless innings of relief in his major league debut earlier in the week before being sent back to Triple-A. While German has worked primarily as a starter in the minors this season, it's unclear how the Yankees will look to use him during his second stint with the club.
Jun 10 2017German was recalled by the Yankees following Saturday's game. The 24-year-old right-hander will get his first big-league opportunity, likely piggybacking with Chad Green in Sunday's series finale against Baltimore. German can provide several innings out of the bullpen with Green on a pitch count. He tossed 5.2 innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts and two walks in his most recent start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Jun 10 2017German will not start Sunday against the Orioles, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.A New York Daily News report suggested German was likely to get the call to start Sunday, but the Yankees announced following Saturday's game that it will be Chad Green in the series finale. German will continue to await his opportunity.
