Jun 25 2024Flexen (2-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Dodgers, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things went poorly for Flexen from the get-go as Shohei Ohtani led off the game with a 376-foot homer to right field. The 29-year-old righty has made nine starts since his last win against the Rays on May 8, producing a 5.81 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 35:19 K:BB over 43.1 innings over that span. Flexen looks to capture that elusive third win in his next start, tentatively slated to be against Colorado this weekend.
Jun 20 2024Flexen allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six innings in a no-decision against Houston on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was a nice bounce-back for Flexen after he allowed six runs (four earned) over 3.1 innings against Arizona in his previous start. The right-hander completed six frames Thursday for the first time since early May and finished with just his third quality start of the season. Flexen has had a tough time in his first campaign with the White Sox, posting a 5.03 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 73.1 frames.
Jun 14 2024Flexen (2-6) took the loss Friday against Arizona, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen couldn't avoid Arizona's bats in this outing, yielding a season-high nine hits and generating only six whiffs out of his 75 pitches. The Chicago right-hander now owns a 5.35 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 51:26 K:BB in 67.1 innings this season. Flexen returns home -- where he has been especially poor with a 5.70 ERA over 36.1 innings -- for his next scheduled start against the Astros.
Jun 9 2024Flexen didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks across five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both of the hits Flexen allowed went for extra-bases, with David Hamilton notching a solo homer in the fifth inning and Jarren Duran logging a triple in the fourth. In his last three starts, Flexen has allowed nine total hits and owns a 3.00 ERA with 13 strikeouts across 15.0 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in a projected start against the Diamondbacks on Friday.
Jun 4 2024Flexen allowed a run on three hits and struck out four without walking a batter over five innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was one of Flexen's better outing this season, and it was the first time he issued zero walks since April 19. His good work was all for naught, as relievers Justin Anderson and Tanner Banks gave up a total of four runs in the sixth inning to squander the White Sox's lead. Flexen has gone five starts without a win, and he hasn't completed more than five innings in any of them. He's at a poor 5.19 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 46:22 K:BB through 59 innings across 13 appearances (11 starts) this year. The right-hander is projected for a home start versus the Red Sox this weekend.
May 29 2024Flexen (2-5) allowed two runs on four hits and five walks while striking out six over five innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen doesn't have the best command, but he hit a low point for the year with this outing. The right-hander has surrendered 16 runs across 18.1 innings over his last four starts, and Wednesday was the first time in that span he's completed five innings. He's now at a 5.50 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 42:22 K:BB over 54 innings across 12 appearances (10 starts) this season. Flexen is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Cubs.
May 24 2024Flexen yielded four runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out two during the loss to Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen gave up just one run through four innings before the Orioles tagged him with three runs in the fifth. After posting a 1.61 ERA over a 22.1-inning span, he's been hit with 14 runs over his last three outings, driving his ERA from 4.29 up to 5.69. Flexen has allowed at least four runs on four occasions this season. His next outing is lined up to be at home against Toronto.
May 19 2024Flexen (2-4) suffered the loss Sunday against the Yankees, allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk over four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen worked around an Anthony Volpe leadoff double in the first but struggled thereafter with a two-run blast by Aaron Judge with no one out in the fifth serving as the final blow. All told, Flexen allowed seven runs through four-plus innings, with much of the damage coming from the bottom of the Yankees lineup, including a two-run single by the eight-hole hitter, Jose Trevino, in the second and a three-run homer by Jon Berti, batting out of the nine hole, in the fourth. Flexen saw his ERA rise from 4.46 to 5.48 with the poor performance. He'll look to rebound in his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place at home when the Orioles come to town for a weekend set.
May 15 2024Flexen came away with a no-decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was cruising early, scattering four singles over four scoreless innings to begin the afternoon, but Flexen hit a wall in the fifth and left the game after 86 pitches (58 strikes) with the score tied 3-3. Some fatigue was perhaps understandable after he's thrown more than 90 pitches in each of his prior two starts, his longest outings of the season so far. Flexen will take a 4.46 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 30:14 K:BB through 40.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come in Yankee Stadium this weekend.
May 13 2024Flexen and the White Sox won't play Monday against the Nationals after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday, with Flexen taking the mound for the first game. The 29-year-old right-hander has a 2-3 record over six starts this season with a 4.29 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 35.2 innings.
May 9 2024Flexen (2-3) earned the victory against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen isn't usually much of a strikeout pitcher, but he fanned eight Rays in the win, doubling his previous season-high mark. In addition, the right-hander notched his second quality start of the campaign and extended his streak of outings with two or fewer runs to five. After giving up 13 earned runs over his first 13.1 frames this season, Flexen has turned things around dramatically, posting a 1.61 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB over 22.1 innings across his subsequent five appearances.
May 1 2024Flexen did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Twins, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the White Sox failed to hang on to a one-run lead after Flexen departed, it was another strong start from the right-hander -- he's now allowed just two runs on six hits in his last two outings (10 innings). Overall, Flexen is 1-3 with a 4.85 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 17:12 K:BB across 29.2 innings in a swing role with Chicago. With Jonathan Cannon back in Triple-A, it seems likely that Flexen will remain in the rotation for now. He's currently slated to face the Rays on the road next week.
Apr 28 2024Flexen is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen will make a second straight turn through the rotation after he held his own in his return from the bullpen Friday against the Rays, striking out two while allowing five baserunners over five scoreless innings en route to grabbing his first win of the season. The right-hander may not be in store for an extended run in the rotation, however; Mike Clevinger made a 60-pitch rehab start at Triple-A Charlotte this past week and could be ready to make his 2024 White Sox debut by next weekend.
Apr 27 2024Flexen (1-3) earned the win Friday against the Rays after throwing five scoreless innings while giving up two hits and three walks while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen's day got off to a questionable start after Yandy Diaz drove a double into center field to begin the game, but the 29-year-old pitcher then turned in his best performance of the year to secure his first win of the young season. Flexen still carries a gaudy 5.11 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the year, but he's given up just one earned run across 11.1 frames over his last three outings. He'll have plenty of momentum on his side during his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Wednesday against the Twins.
Apr 24 2024Flexen is listed as the White Sox's scheduled starting pitcher for Friday's game versus the Rays at Guaranteed Rate Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen has made his last two appearances as a reliever, working four scoreless innings behind Garrett Crochet in a 7-0 loss to the Phillies on Friday and 2.1 innings of one-run ball behind Jonathan Cannon in a 7-0 loss to the Twins on Monday. He'll be on three days' rest Friday, but Flexen shouldn't face any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the White Sox rotation. Flexen won't necessarily be in store for a long-term stay in the rotation, however, as he could be a candidate to head back to the bullpen when Mike Clevinger is likely to make his season debut in early May.
Apr 15 2024White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Monday that Flexen will remain in the rotation for now but will "at some point" pitch out of the bullpen, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen has permitted 13 runs with a 7:6 K:BB over 13.1 innings in his three starts this season. The White Sox will keep him in the rotation for the time being more out of necessity, but it sounds like he might be headed for a long relief role once Mike Clevinger is ready.
Apr 12 2024Flexen (0-3) yielded six runs on seven hits and a walk over 2.2 innings Friday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen gave up just one run through the first two frames before the Reds tagged him with five in the third inning. His day was ended after serving up back-to-back home runs to Elly De La Cruz and Tyler Stephenson. Flexen's ERA jumped to 8.78 with a lackluster 7:6 K:BB through three starts. He's projected to face the Royals at home next week.
Apr 6 2024Flexen (0-2) took a loss Saturday in Kansas City, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 6.1 innings of work. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a scoreless tie heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and Flexen was still out there with his pitch count low. However, just three pitches into the frame Flexen had yielded a leadoff single and a two-run homer to MJ Melendez. He was pulled after a one-out walk and watched that runner eventually score to add another run to his ledger. Flexen wound up throwing just 77 pitches over his 6.1 frames and registered a quality start but nonetheless was saddled with his second loss.
Apr 1 2024Flexen (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks to earn the loss during Monday's loss to Atlanta. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen started off strong by retiring the first seven batters he faced but only recorded six more outs while allowing nine baserunners and four runs during innings three through five. Flexen struggled with his command in throwing just nine of 22 first-pitch strikes, an uphill battle against any team, let alone against a dynamic Atlanta lineup. After posting consecutive seasons with an ERA of 3.61 and 3.73 over a combined 316.1 innings between 2021 and 2022, the veteran righty posted a 6.86 ERA and 1.67 WHIP last season over 102.1 innings between Colorado and Seattle. His season has gotten off to a rough start again this year, but he'll have an opportunity for a rebound this weekend as he's tentatively scheduled to face the Royals in Kansas City.
Mar 31 2024Flexen is scheduled to start Monday against Atlanta at Guaranteed Rate Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Between stops in Seattle and Colorado last season, Flexen turned in a 6.86 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 7.7 K-BB% across 102.1 innings. Despite those poor numbers, Flexen looks like he'll have plenty of leash in the White Sox rotation to begin the season, given the lack of attractive alternatives on the 40-man roster and on the farm. He'll tentatively line up for a two-start week with a more favorable outing on tap this weekend in pitcher-friendly Kansas City, but the upcoming start against a powerful Atlanta offense should be reason enough for fantasy managers to steer clear of Flexen in avoidance of ratio damage.
Jan 9 2024White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Tuesday that the club plans to use Flexen as a full-time starting pitcher in 2024, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen -- who inked a one-year, $1.75 million contract last month -- has split his time between starting and relieving over the last two seasons, but the White Sox plan to give him a full starter's workload in 2024. The right-hander posted a rough 6.86 ERA and 74:38 K:BB through 102.1 innings in 2023 between the Mariners and Rockies, including a 7.18 ERA in 16 starts. However, Flexen generated a 3.66 ERA from 2021-22 with Seattle while being used mostly as a starter, and the White Sox will be hoping he returns to that form.
Dec 29 2023Flexen signed a one-year, $1.75 million contract with the White Sox on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After recording a 3.66 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in his first two seasons with the Mariners, Flexen's numbers skyrocketed up to a 6.86 ERA and 1.67 WHIP last year through 102.1 total innings between Seattle and Colorado. Chicago's rotation projects to rank near the bottom of the AL again this year, so Flexen should have a fairly clear path to securing a starting job in 2024.
Sep 28 2023Flexen (2-8) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings to earn the win over the Dodgers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen had a tough assignment on tap for his last outing, but he got the job done. He allowed a two-run home run to J.D. Martinez and a solo shot to Enrique Hernandez over the first two innings before settling down. Flexen hadn't gone six innings in any of his previous six appearances. He concludes the season with a 6.86 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 74:38 K:BB over 102.1 innings across 29 games (16 starts) between the Mariners and the Rockies.
Sep 23 2023Flexen did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against the Cubs. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After surrendering a run-scoring double to Ian Happ in the first frame, Flexen settled in and held the Cubs scoreless until a fifth-inning sacrifice fly accounted for his only other blemish. Unfortunately, Chicago's late rally disqualified the 29-year-old righty from earning his second win of the campaign. Saturday was the first time in Flexen's five September starts that he was able to limit the opposition to less than three runs, accumulating an unfortunate 8.20 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 18.2 innings across his previous four tries. He currently lines up to face the Dodgers at Coors Field in his final regular-season start next week.
Sep 18 2023Flexen (1-8) took the loss Sunday against the Giants after giving up four runs on five hits while striking out five over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen got off to a very strong start, allowing just two hits and a run through five frames before things fell apart in the sixth. He began the inning with an out but proceeded to allow three straight hits and was pulled in favor of Matt Koch who could not help him strand the inherited runners. Some positives are that Flexen has struck out five batters in back-to-back starts and hasn't surrendered a home run in either start as well, both of which took place at Coors Field. He's struggled to a unsightly 7.19 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 70:34 K:BB in 91.1 innings. Flexen lines up for a road start against the Cubs this week.
Sep 12 2023Flexen did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Cubs. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he surrendered nine hits on the day, Flexen managed to limit the Cubs to just three runs and notched his third start of the season without surrendering a home run. Since joining Colorado (44 innings), Flexen owns a sub-par 6.76 ERA to pair with a 36:15 K:BB. He'll close out his two-start week Sunday at home against the Giants.
Sep 6 2023Flexen (1-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Arizona exploded for five runs in the third inning after Flexen hit a pair of batters before issuing back-to-back walks. The 29-year-old right-hander has allowed 10 runs in his last two starts (eight innings). Flexen's ERA is up to 7.36 with a 1.74 WHIP and 60:32 K:BB across 80.2 innings between the Rockies and Mariners this season. He's tentatively lined up for a home matchup with the Cubs in his next outing.
Sep 1 2023Flexen pitched 5.2 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and a walk in Friday's 13-9 loss to the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen struggled to keep the ball in the yard Friday, allowing three homers, most notably a two-run shot by Danny Jansen with one out in the top of the sixth inning. The right-hander nearly reached six innings on the mound for the third time in four games, but he fell one out short. Since the beginning of August, Flexen has posted a 5.23 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 24 strikeouts over 32.2 innings in six starts,
Aug 26 2023Flexen (1-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen held the Orioles scoreless until the fifth inning, where a throwing error by Elias Diaz advanced Austin Hays into scoring position and ultimately across the plate. Overall, it was a strong performance for Flexen, who didn't allow a single extra-base hit and set a season high in strikeouts. After giving up 12 earned runs over his last three starts, Flexen has given up three across his most recent pair of starts. He's tentatively lined up to make his next start at Coors Field against the Blue Jays.
Aug 20 2023Flexen allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and struck out five without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was just the third time all year Flexen's gone six innings in an appearance, and it was also his first quality start. Despite the solid outing, he came away with a third straight no-decision after the Rockies' bullpen imploded in the eighth inning. Flexen is now at a 7.18 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 50:28 K:BB with 19 home runs allowed over 67.2 innings between the Rockies and the Mariners this year. The right-hander is projected to make his next start on the road in Baltimore.
Aug 14 2023Flexen allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six batters over six innings in a no-decision against Arizona on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Flexen gave up four runs and departed in line for the loss, this was arguably his best performance in a Colorado uniform, as he completed six innings for the first time and tallied a season-high six punchouts. The right-hander yielded a run in each of the first two innings but settled down after that until Christian Walker hit a two-run homer off him in the sixth. Flexen had given up two long balls in each of his first three games with the Rockies, so even surrendering just one home run was an improvement. An eighth-inning Colorado comeback took the veteran hurler off the hook for the loss, but there's still little reason to roster him in all but the deepest of fantasy leagues given his 7.74 ERA and 6.6 K/9 on the campaign.
Aug 10 2023Flexen did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the Brewers. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen looked good early, striking out two of the first three batters he faced before hurling three scoreless innings. However, he began to struggle with his command in the fourth, allowing three runs on three hits while needing 30 pitches to get out of the inning. The right-hander then surrendered back-to-back home runs with two outs in the fifth before being relieved by Daniel Bard to open the next frame. Flexen has now allowed five runs in two of his three starts since joining the Rockies and has surrendered two long balls in each contest.
Aug 4 2023Flexen (1-5) allowed three runs on 10 hits and struck out two without walking a batter over five innings, earning the win Friday over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen gave up solo home runs to Nolan Arenado and Nolan Gorman, but he was able to work himself out of some other jams in his first win of the season. The right-hander has been tagged for four homers over 8.2 innings in his two starts with the Rockies, but he displayed better control Friday. Flexen is now at a 7.82 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 35:25 K:BB through 50.2 innings this season. He's tentatively lined up for a road start in Milwaukee next week.
Aug 3 2023Flexen is scheduled to start Friday's series opener with the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite walking six batters and giving up four hits -- including two home runs -- while failing to escape the fourth inning in his first start with Colorado last week against Oakland, the veteran right-hander will get another turn through the rotation. Even though the Rockies aren't teeming with appealing alternatives in the rotation, Flexen may still have a short leash with the big club if he fails to show any notable improvement this weekend. He'll at least have the benefit of pitching in a more pitcher-friendly venue in St. Louis after his Rockies debut came at Coors Field.
Jul 29 2023Flexen (0-5) allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and six walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings to take the loss versus the Athletics on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The altitude usually makes its presence known on batted balls, but Flexen was far too generous with free passes to have an acceptable outing in his Rockies debut. His six walks Saturday doubled his previous season high. The right-hander is now at an 8.08 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 33:25 K:BB over 45.2 innings between the Rockies and the Mariners this season. While it was far from an encouraging effort, Colorado's rotation needs arms capable of covering innings, so Flexen could stick around for a while. He's tentatively lined up for a road start in St. Louis next week.
Jul 28 2023The Rockies promoted Flexen from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday ahead of his start against the Athletics on Saturday, Suzie Hunter of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen holds a 7.71 ERA and 1.86 WHIP across 42 innings this season, but he will join a Rockies rotation that is desperate for rotation pieces. Saturday will mark Flexen's fifth start of the season, and while his stats haven't been great, he will have the benefit of facing the worst offense in the majors.
Jul 24 2023Flexen could be called up from Triple-A Albuquerque to make his next start with the Rockies during the big club's home series with the Athletics this weekend, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being released by the Mets on July 6, Flexen signed a minor-league deal with the Rockies a week later and has immediately settled into the rotation with Colorado's top minor-league affiliate. He's been sharp through his first two starts at Triple-A, most recently tossing five shutout innings (84 pitches) while striking out six Sunday against Sugar Land. Even after recently calling up another Triple-A starter in Peter Lambert, the Rockies still only have three healthy rotation members at the moment, With that in mind, Flexen could have a path to a long-term stay with the big club if he's called upon to start against Oakland this weekend.
Jul 13 2023Flexen signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Thursday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen has posted a 7.71 ERA over 17 appearances (four starts) at the major-league level this season but was a solid arm for the Mariners from 2021-22 while bouncing between the rotation and bullpen. He will report to Triple-A Albuquerque for now but is a good bet to join the Rockies' rotation sooner rather than later.
Jul 6 2023Flexen was released by the Mets on Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was designated for assignment by the Mets shortly after they acquired him from the Mariners on Monday as part of a three-player swap. The primary target for New York in that trade was reliever Trevor Gott. Flexen, who had struggled to a 7.71 ERA in 42 major-league innings this year with Seattle, will now head to the free agent market.
Jul 3 2023The Mets designated Flexen for assignment Monday after acquiring him from the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Along with Flexen, the Mets acquired right-hander Trevor Gott from Seattle in exchange for lefty Zach Muckenhirn, but Gott is the main asset in the deal from the Mets' standpoint. The Mets will absorb the approximately $4 million remaining on Flexen's contract, and though he won't be added to the 40-man roster, the organization is presumably hoping that he'll pass through waivers and help bolster the rotation at Triple-A Syracuse. Flexen owns an ugly 7.71 ERA and 1.86 WHIP in 42 frames with Seattle in 2023, but between the prior two seasons, the 29-year-old right-hander amassed a 3.66 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 317.1 innings and 53 starts. Perhaps a change of scenery will help the soft-tossing Flexen stumble upon a better pitch mix or a mechanical tweak that could allow him to resurface as useful rotation depth for the big club in the latter portion of the season.
Jun 27 2023Flexen was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was an important part of the pitching mix in Seattle in each of the last two seasons while working as both a starter and reliever, but he has now been dropped from the 40-man roster after struggling to a 7.71 ERA through 42 innings (four starts, 13 relief appearances) this season. The 28-year-old had surrendered 13 earned runs in 8.2 innings since the beginning of June.
May 18 2023Flexen, who fired three scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout in a loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday, has yet to be scored upon in seven frames across four appearances since moving to the bullpen. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday's efficient 29-pitch outing marked Flexen's second-most voluminous relief appearance in that regard, as he'd thrown 43 pitches in just two innings against Toronto in his bullpen debut April 30. The one-time starter has issued just one free pass and scattered seven hits over his stint as a reliever thus far, and his versatility should continue to afford him multi-inning assignments that may occasionally allow him to qualify for a hold or decision.
Apr 29 2023Flexen will not make his scheduled start Saturday in Toronto, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle recalled Easton McGee from Triple-A to make Saturday's start, and given how Flexen has pitched lately, it seems like he just lost his rotation spot. Flexen has given up 18 earned runs in 12.1 innings over his last three appearances. He is available out of the bullpen Saturday, per Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM.
Apr 5 2023Flexen (0-1) was tagged with the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen entered the rotation as a result of Robbie Ray (elbow) hitting the injured list. Flexen put up a decent showing, but a Logan O'Hoppe two-run homer off him in the second inning was enough to pin him with a loss. Ray is expected to be out until at least May, so Flexen should have multiple more turns in the rotation. Wednesday's outing was evidence that he's capable of keeping the Mariners competitive in his starts, but the right-hander's paltry strikeout numbers over the past two campaigns make him an unexciting fantasy option.
Apr 2 2023Flexen is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Angels, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As anticipated, Flexen will enter the rotation as a replacement for Robbie Ray, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a Grade 1 flexor strain. The right-hander will likely make more than a handful of starts while Ray recovers, and Flexen should be reasonably stretched out after pitching four innings of one-run ball in relief of the injured Ray in Friday's game against the Guardians. Flexen doesn't miss many bats and relies on quality defense behind him, so he likely profiles as more of a streaming option in the majority of leagues.
Apr 1 2023Flexen allowed an earned run on four hits and three walks across four innings in a loss to the Guardians on Friday. He struck out one and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Robbie Ray was chased after 3.1 innings, leading to what could have been a busy night for the bullpen. However, Flexen, a member of the rotation for most of the last two seasons, ate up some valuable innings in the back end of the contest and spared the arms of several fellow relievers in the process. Having thrown 66 pitches Friday, Flexen is unlikely to be available again until after the weekend.
Mar 11 2023Flexen has allowed one run on eight hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts across 8.1 innings in three Cactus League appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander worked all the way up to 50 pitches in his most recent outing Saturday against the Rockies as he continues to try and make a case for a back-end rotation spot. Flexen's 8-9 record last season was, on the surface, a step back from his career-best 14-6 mark in 2021. However, the 28-year-old's 3.73 ERA was his second straight sub-4.00 mark and was only slightly higher than the career-low 3.61 figure he'd generated a season prior.
Oct 7 2022Flexen will not be an active member of the Mariners' opening roster for their AL Wild Card Series against the Blue Jays, starting the series on their taxi squad. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen will likely be unavailable to pitch in the series barring any injuries to the Mariners' pitching staff and bullpen. The right-hander finished the 2022 regular season with a 3.73 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 95 punchouts over 137.2 innings in 33 appearances, including 22 starts.
Oct 4 2022Flexen allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two in four innings in a 7-6 extra-innings win in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against Detroit. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first start since Aug. 6, Flexen held Detroit scoreless in the first two innings. In the third, a couple of doubles led to a run and in the fourth, he gave up a two-run, two-out homer to Spencer Torkelson. Flexen has a 4.02 ERA in 121 innings as a starter and a 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings in relief this year. He'll likely continue in a relief role if he's included on the Mariners' AL Wild Card roster.
Oct 3 2022Flexen is scheduled to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since being dropped from the rotation in early August, Flexen has generated a 1.62 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB across 16.2 innings while picking up two saves along the way. Flexen's strong form over the last seven weeks should be enough for him to earn a spot on the Mariners' postseason roster as a reliever, but he'll be needed to temporarily step back into the rotation with the doubleheader creating a stretch of six games in five days. Given that he hasn't covered more than four innings in any appearance since moving to the bullpen, Flexen may not work deep enough into Tuesday's outing to factor into the decision.
Sep 30 2022Flexen (8-9) got the win in extra innings over the Rangers on Thursday, allowing an unearned run over one inning without any hits, walks or strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen gave up a sacrifice fly to Marcus Semien that plated phantom runner Leody Taveras with the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th, but the Mariners walked it off in the home half of the frame with singles from Luis Torrens and J.P. Crawford. The veteran right-hander's last win had come July 25 against this same Rangers squad when he was still working as a starter, yet Flexen has adapted well to a relief role by not allowing an earned run across the 9.2 innings covering his last eight appearances.
Sep 4 2022Flexen struck out one in a perfect 11th inning to earn the save in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was the last reliever available after the Mariners drained the 'pen following a rain delay in the fourth inning. He slammed the door with ease, needing just six pitches to retire Luke Maile, Myles Straw and Steven Kwan in order. This was Flexen's second straight appearance with a save, though his effort Aug. 30 versus the Tigers was a four-inning assignment in a lopsided game. He's allowed four runs (three earned) through eight innings across four appearances since moving to the bullpen. For the season, the right-hander has a 3.89 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 87:47 K:BB through 125 innings.
Aug 30 2022Flexen picked up the save Tuesday in Detroit, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three in four innings in a 9-3 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen entered the game in the sixth inning with the Mariners leading 9-0 and finished the ballgame to earn his first career professional save. It was the first appearance for the 28-year-old since Aug. 19 and the third straight time he's pitched in relief. There's a possibility he will receive an occasional spot start down the stretch but he'll likely get most of his work out of the bullpen for the rest of the season.
Aug 14 2022Flexen allowed an unearned run on one hit and four walks over two innings while recording two strikeouts during a relief appearance in a loss to the Rangers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first appearance since transitioning to a bullpen role, Flexen clearly had some control issues, leading to him needing 43 pitches to record six outs. The veteran right-hander has been effective as a starter the majority of the season with a 3.86 ERA, and he'll likely be destined for multi-inning assignments akin to Saturday's while he remains a reliever.
Aug 10 2022Seattle manager Scott Servais said Wednesday that Flexen will shift to the bullpen, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mariners foreshadowed Flexen's move to a relief role during their 1-0 win over the Yankees in 13 innings Tuesday, when he was spotted warming up in the bullpen late in the contest. Flexen wasn't ultimately needed to enter the game, but the Mariners will opt to shorten their rotation to five men after he was lit up for five runs over six innings in his most recent start Saturday against the Angels. Seattle could look to bring Flexen back into the rotation later in the season if workload concerns crop up for rookie George Kirby, but for the time being, the veteran right-hander will retain little fantasy value while he likely handles a low-leverage multi-inning role out of the bullpen.
Aug 6 2022Flexen (7-9) took the loss during a 7-1 loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen navigated the first two innings unscathed before surrendering five runs over the next four innings to fall in line for the loss. The rough outing breaks a five-start streak of allowing two runs or fewer during which the 28-year-old pitched to a 1.95 ERA across 27.2 innings. Flexen sports a 3.92 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 81 strikeouts in 117 innings across 21 starts and is scheduled to pitch again next weekend on the road against the Rangers.
Jul 31 2022Flexen gave up two earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out one over 5.1 innings in a 5-4 win over the Astros on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen held his own against a dangerous Astros lineup and left the game in line for the win after going 5.1 innings on 94 pitches. The 28-year-old right hander used the free pass defensively, and he chose to pitch around Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman by issuing back-to-back four-pitch walks in the bottom of the first before getting out of the inning unscathed. Flexen came into the game with a 1.61 ERA and three wins in July and is showing that he can be effective, even with a weak K/BB of 1.9. Flexen has struck out only 76 batters in 111 innings while issuing 41 walks in 2022. He is tentatively expected to start next week against the Angels.
Jul 25 2022Flexen (7-8) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings, earning the win Monday over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in the third inning and gave up a solo home run to Adolis Garcia in the sixth. In four starts in July, Flexen has yielded four runs in 22.1 innings while earning three wins. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last 11 starts, settling in to provide consistency in the middle of the Mariners' rotation. He has a 3.75 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 75:37 K:BB in 105.2 innings through 19 starts overall, and his next one is projected to be this weekend in Houston.
Jul 18 2022Flexen gave up one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out three over 3.2 innings in a 6-2 win over the Rangers on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen only threw 76 pitches -- the least he had thrown since June 3 -- but he held the Rangers to one run and left the game with the lead in the fourth inning. The 28-year-old right-hander now boasts an excellent 1.10 ERA in July and has only given up two earned runs all month. Flexen has a 70:35 K:BB in 99.2 innings this season. He appears to be in line for a two-start week beginning the Monday after the All-Star break with a rematch at home against the Rangers followed by a trip to Houston.
Jul 14 2022Flexen will start on short rest Sunday against the Rangers, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen earned the win during Wednesday's matinee against the Nationals, allowing a run on six hits and two walks while striking out one in six innings. Although he threw 85 pitches during the start, the Mariners will elect to line him up on short rest for the team's final game prior to the All-Star break. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 28-year-old on a slight pitch count during Sunday's matchup in Texas.
Jul 12 2022Flexen won't start as scheduled Tuesday at Washington since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander last started July 4 in San Diego and delivered 6.2 scoreless innings, and he'll have a wait another day before retaking the mound due to some severe weather. The game is being made up via a doubleheader Wednesday, and Flexen figures to start one of those contests. The postponement means it's likely to be his last outing before the All-Star break.
Jul 9 2022Flexen is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday in Washington against the Nationals rather than in Sunday's series finale with the Blue Jays in Seattle, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After getting the Independence Day start against the Padres, Flexen appeared primed for a two-start week, but the Mariners instead used Wednesday's off day to reorder their rotation. Logan Gilbert, who started in Tuesday's 6-2 win over San Diego, will instead get the two-start week while he takes the hill Sunday on his normal four days' rest.
Jul 4 2022Flexen (5-8) earned the win during Monday's 8-2 victory over San Diego, allowing four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts in 6.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle staked Flexen to a two-run lead before he even took the mound and the righty cruised to an easy win, retiring the first 10 Padres he faced. The 28-year-old has now won three consecutive starts while posting a solid 3.09 during his last nine turns compared to a 4.00 mark on the season. Additionally, the eight strikeouts represent a season high as Flexen is averaging 3.9 per start during the nine-game stretch. He's scheduled to take the mound again this weekend against Toronto.
Jun 29 2022Flexen (4-8) picked up the win against the Orioles on Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen now has a personal winning streak going for the first time this season. After an ugly month of May, Flexen pitched to a respectable 4.09 ERA in June. His 1.45 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB in 33 innings in the month of June bode poorly for his chances of enjoying a similar level of run prevention moving forward.
Jun 24 2022Flexen (3-8) earned the win Friday versus the Angels. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in five-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen allowed a solo shot and an RBI triple to Mike Trout, and Ryan Borucki allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth inning. This was Flexen's first win in five starts in June despite him not allowing more than three runs in any of those games. He's still not pitching deep into games, as he's completed six innings only five times in 14 starts. The right-hander has a 4.31 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 55:27 K:BB across 77.1 innings. He's lined up for a favorable home start versus the Orioles next week.
Jun 18 2022Flexen allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Angels. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last five starts, but he's gone 1-2 in that span. He's also kept the ball in the yard in four of those five games. The right-hander hasn't done anything particularly remarkable this year with a 4.23 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 52:25 K:BB through 72.1 innings, and he'll carry a 2-8 record into next week's projected road rematch with the Angels.
Jun 14 2022Flexen (2-8) took the loss against Minnesota on Monday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen yielded plenty of traffic on the bases Monday, allowing multiple baserunners in four of his five frames. Still, he did a good job of limiting the damage, allowing a two-run homer to the second batter he faced in the first inning but keeping a strong Twins offense off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Flexen's early trouble was enough to send him to his eighth loss -- tied for second-most in the majors -- though his 4.30 ERA suggests that he hasn't been as bad as the record implies. In fact, the right-hander has posted a solid 3.04 ERA across 23.2 innings over his past four starts, though a 1.39 WHIP and 16:8 K:BB during that stretch isn't great.
Jun 7 2022Flexen (2-7) got the loss Tuesday after he pitched 6.2 innings, surrendering two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen tossed three scoreless innings to open the contest before the Astros got to him for two runs in the bottom of the fourth, accounting for all the damage against him in the outing. He has held his own against the Astros this season, surrendering a total of seven runs over 24.2 frames in four starts against the club this year, good for a 2.55 ERA in those outings. Flexen has now allowed six runs over 18.2 frames in his last three starts after giving up five runs over four innings against the Red Sox on May 21, lowering his ERA from 4.98 to 4.35 over 11 outings this season. He tentatively lines up to pitch again Monday versus the Twins.
Jun 3 2022Flexen did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against Baltimore. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen struggled out of the gate, allowing two doubles and a single while throwing a wild pitch that all resulted in two first-inning runs for the Orioles. Baltimore added another run in the third, but Flexen minimized the damage and escaped with his seventh quality start of the campaign. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's road matchup against the Astros.
May 27 2022Flexen (2-6) yielded one run on seven hits and two walks over seven innings Friday, striking out six and picking up a win against Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was 0-4 over his last five starts since earning a win over Kansas City on April 22. He danced around trouble multiple times in Friday's outing and the only run he gave up came on a fielder's choice in the second inning. It was the third start in which he allowed just one run and he lowered his season ERA to 4.47 through 50.1 frames. Flexen is lined up to take the mound in Baltimore next week.
May 22 2022Flexen didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Red Sox, surrendering five runs on eight hits and three walks over four-plus innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got staked to a 4-0 lead before he even set foot on the mound and took a 5-1 lead into the fifth inning, but Flexen allowed four straight hits to begin the bottom of that frame before getting the hook, including two doubles and a Rafael Devers homer, and all four came around to score. This was Flexen's shortest start yet this season, but he's failed to complete six innings in four straight starts. He'll carry a ragged 4.98 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 31:15 K:BB through 43.1 innings into his next outing.
May 16 2022Flexen (1-6) got the loss Monday, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 against the Blue Jays. He struck out seven batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander gave up solo homers in both the first and second innings before getting pulled in the bottom of the sixth frame after walking two batters and recording one out. One of the men he left on base would come around to score for the final run on his line. It was the second straight outing where he has surrendered multiple home runs and he has now given up seven homers in seven starts this year. Monday's effort mixed with Flexen's blow up last week versus the Phillies has raised his ERA from 3.10 to 4.35 on the campaign. He has now lost four straight decisions and will look to turn it around in his next start which tentatively lines up to be Saturday at Boston.
May 10 2022Flexen (1-5) took the loss Monday, coughing up six runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings as the Mariners were routed 9-0 by the Phillies. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Four of the nine hits off Flexen went for extra bases, including homers by Jean Segura and Rhys Hoskins. The right-hander hadn't allowed more than three runs in any of his five prior outings this season, but his low 15.7 percent strikeout rate gives him little margin for error. His hard-hit and barrel rates rank in the bottom 25th percentile of the league. Flexen will carry a 4.24 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB through 34 innings into his next start.
May 3 2022Flexen (1-4) got the loss during Tuesday's 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Astros, allowing one run on two hits and three walks with two strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen pitched well except for one mistake -- a fourth inning fastball Yordan Alvarez took over the center-field fence -- and was saddled with the loss as Seattle was held scoreless for the second straight game. The 27-year-old has lost four of his five starts this season despite a solid 3.10 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He'll go for the win later this week as he's tentatively tabbed to start Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.
Apr 22 2022Flexen (1-2) picked up the victory during Friday's 4-1 win over Kansas City, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing three earned runs and being tagged for the loss in each of his first two starts, Flexen shut down the Royals offense besides a Salvador Perez solo shot. Through three starts, the 27-year-old has an excellent 3.63 ERA -- nearly identical to last season's 3.61 mark -- and 11 strikeouts compared to just four walks through 17.1 innings. He's currently set to face off against Tampa Bay on Thursday for his next start.
Apr 16 2022Flexen (0-2) took the loss in Saturday's 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Astros, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen pitched well enough Saturday, but Seattle experienced a vintage performance from Justin Verlander and couldn't put a run on the board. The 27-year-old has now submitted identical lines of five hits, three runs and three strikeouts in both starts, though he was able to go a solid six innings against Houston. He's currently slated to face Kansas City for his next start on Friday.
Apr 11 2022Flexen (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits over 4.1 innings to take the loss against Minnesota on Monday. He struck out three and walked three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen gave up a first-inning run but then went unscathed until the fifth. In that frame, he gave up a pair of hits to lead off the inning and was pulled for a reliever with one out. Both inherited runners came around to score, saddling Flexen with an unfavorable final line and leading to the loss. The right-hander will look for better results in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to take place at home against Houston this weekend.
Mar 20 2022Flexen started the Mariners' Cactus League loss to the Angels on Sunday and allowed an earned run on two hits over three innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was one of the several pleasant surprises for the Mariners last season, posting a 14-6 record, 3.61 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 31 starts. The right-hander enters 2022 with a solid grip on the No. 4 spot in the rotation, and he made a strong impression on manager Scott Servais in his first spring action while liberally incorporating the cutter he found plenty of success with a year ago, Jesse Borek of MLB.com reports. "All of his pitchers were working, and he had really good command," Servais said.
Oct 3 2021Flexen got a no-decision in Saturday's 6-4 victory over the Angels, allowing one run on six hits and one walk with one strikeout in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen pitched well in Saturday's win, permitting just one run on a Jose Rojas home run in the fifth inning, but he was saddled with the no-decision as Seattle's offense didn't get going until late. After sitting out the 2020 season, the 27-year-old concludes the regular season with a 14-6 record in 31 starts with a 3.61 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 125:40 K:BB in 179.2 innings.
Sep 28 2021Flexen (14-6) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings Monday, striking out six and earning a win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't Flexen's most efficient start but he extended his winning streak to three games thanks to Seattle's offense dropping 13 runs. He coughed up a three-run shot to Seth Brown in the first inning and later allowed another run in the fourth. He's posted a 3.06 ERA and a 17:5 K:BB over his last three outings, lowering his season ERA to 3.67 through 174.1 frames. Flexen is projected to face the Angels at home this weekend.
Sep 23 2021Flexen (13-6) earned the win over Oakland on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed only one extra-base hit in the contest -- a fifth inning Matt Chapman solo homer that also accounted for Oakland's only run. Flexen tied his season high with eight strikeouts and completed seven frames for the first time since Aug. 19. He lowered his ERA to 3.56, which ranks fourth among qualified pitchers in the American League. Flexen is scheduled to face the Athletics again early next week.
Sep 18 2021Flexen (12-6) secured the victory in a win over the Royals on Friday, allowing an earned run on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out three in the game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander bounced back nicely after a rough outing versus the Diamondbacks his last time out, coaxing his ERA back down to 3.66. Flexen also encouragingly stayed away from the long ball after allowing his 15th and 16th home runs of the season in his previous two starts, and all six hits he surrendered were singles. The 27-year-old will look to extend what has been a strong stretch of pitching since early August -- save for the aforementioned stumble against Arizona -- when he takes the mound next week.
Sep 12 2021Flexen (11-6) took the loss in Saturday's 7-3 defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was staked to an early 2-1 lead and was cruising until encountering trouble in the fourth inning, when the first four Diamondbacks reached base and Daulton Varsho later homered. This was the 25-year-old's first start where he surrendered more than three runs since July 27, also his last loss. He'll look to get back on track against Kansas City next weekend.
Sep 5 2021Flexen didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's 10-4 win over Arizona, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was rolling through five innings but permitted three runs on three hits in the sixth to fall behind 3-2. Seattle eventually knotted the score and went on to win in extras while Flexen posted his fourth quality start in five turns. The 27-year-old has now allowed no more than three runs in any of his last seven starts and has a 2.93 ERA in the span.
Aug 31 2021Flexen didn't factor into the decision during Monday's 4-3 loss to Houston, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros jumped on Flexen early with two runs in the first, but the 27-year-old prevented any more from scoring despite considerable traffic on the bases. He departed down 2-1 with two out and a runner on second in the sixth but was erased from the final line when Seattle took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Flexen concludes a successful August with a 2-0 record and 2.68 ERA in 37 innings across six starts.
Aug 24 2021Flexen (11-5) earned the win Tuesday after holding the A's to one run on six hits and a walk while striking out five across 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although it took him a bit to get into a nice rhythm, Flexen was on point Tuesday, continuing a successful August. After allowing a run to score in the first inning, the right-hander blanked the A's the rest of the way, tossing 105 pitchers in all, including 66 for strikes. Among American League pitchers, Flexen has tallied the most starts with six-plus innings allowing one earned run or fewer. His recent success ties him for seventh among American League starting pitchers with his 3.54 ERA this season. Flexen tentatively lines up for a Monday matchup against Houston.
Aug 19 2021Flexen allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings Thursday against the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen held the Rangers' lineup in check throughout the start, as the lone extra-base hit he surrendered was a solo home run by Adolis Garcia. Otherwise, he pitched efficiently and completed seven innings for the first time in his last five outings. He exited the game with a 6-2 lead, though that margin margin was squandered by the Mariners' bullpen, ultimately costing Flexen a win. After this effort, Flexen has a 3.65 ERA with 90 strikeouts across 133.1 innings on the campaign.
Aug 14 2021Flexen got a no-decision in Friday's 3-2 victory over Toronto, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen pitched well aside from a rough fourth inning that saw him permit four baserunners and both runs for his 11th start surrendering three runs or less in his last 12 turns. The 27-year-old righty now sports a quality 3.78 ERA, though his subpar 6.1 K/9 limits his upside.
Aug 8 2021Flexen didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Yankees after allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk across five innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen wasn't involved in the decision for the first time since June 29. The veteran right-hander has had issues with home runs, though, and he has given up at least one blast in each of his last three outings. He owns a 3.51 ERA across 41 innings since the beginning of July.
Aug 3 2021Flexen (10-5) picked up the win in Monday's 8-2 victory over the Rays, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A five-run third inning by the M's gave Flexen all the run support he needed, as he tossed 71 of 113 pitches for strikes en route to his 10th quality start of the season. The right-hander's return to North America after he spent 2020 in the KBO has been a resounding success, and he'll carry a 3.75 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 75:24 K:BB through 115.1 innings into his next outing.
Jul 27 2021Flexen (9-5) lost Tuesday's game 8-6 at the hands of the Astros, allowing seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen surrendered a Yordan Alvarez three-run homer in the first, then allowed four more runs on five hits in the fourth to snap his streak of starts with three runs or fewer permitted at eight. It's the 27-year-old righty's second straight loss and he sports a solid though 3.81 ERA though he has a mediocre 1.25 WHIP and low 5.7 K/9.
Jul 23 2021Flexen (9-4) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Athletics after allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while fanning one across 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen ended just two outs away from recording another quality start and while he delivered a decent outing in this one, he was outdueled by Sean Manaea. The right-handed Flexen has given up two or fewer runs in each of his last four outings and owns an excellent 1.42 ERA across 25.1 innings this month. His next start is scheduled for next week at home against the Astros.
Jul 21 2021Flexen is listed as the Mariners' probable starter for Thursday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander originally lined up to start Wednesday, but Seattle instead utilized an opener while Darren McCaughan served as the primary pitcher. Flexen has a 1.77 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB in 45.2 innings over his past seven starts and will attempt to continue his strong run Thursday against Oakland.
Jul 20 2021Flexen is expected to follow opener Keynan Middleton against the Rockies on Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen lined up to start Wednesday's contest, but the Mariners will instead go with an opener. Flexen has pitched well over his past seven starts -- lasting at least five frames and allowing no more than three earned runs -- with a 1.77 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB across 45.2 innings.
Jul 17 2021Flexen (9-3) allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out two across seven innings to earn the win over the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen's only damage was a second-inning solo home run off the bat of Max Stassi. Other than that, it was another great performance against the Halos, as he's allowed just four runs against them in 18 innings over three appearances this season. Over his last six starts, Flexen is 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA and 0.91 WHIP. He has lowered his season ERA to 3.35 and his nine wins have him tied for third-most in the American League. The only downfall right now is his low 5.9 K/9.
Jul 11 2021Flexen (8-3) tossed seven scoreless innings against the Angels on Saturday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six to earn the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both Flexen and opposing starter Patrick Sandoval notched quality starts in the contest, but Flexen came out on top in the low-scoring affair. The right-hander dominated despite registering only seven swinging strikes and a quiet six punchouts. Flexen has shown this season that it is still possible to get by as a major-league starter without racking up strikeouts -- his 6.1 K/9 ranks in the bottom 10th percentile among pitchers who have tossed at least 50 innings, but that hasn't stopped him from posting a strong 8-3 record, 3.51 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. Over his past four contests, Flexen has been even better, registering a 1.38 ERA across 32.2 frames.
Jul 5 2021Flexen (7-3) allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out five across six innings, earning the win Sunday over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen shut out the Rangers through the first five innings, but allowed a run on three singles in the sixth inning. It was one of Flexen's more dominant performances this season and he didn't walk a single batter for just the third time. The 26-year-old has a 3.80 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 85.1 innings. He is not a big strikeout threat, posting a low 6.0 K/9. He has been very solid recently, firing a quality start in each of his last five appearances.
Jul 5 2021Flexen (7-3) allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out five across six innings, earning the win Sunday over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen shut out the Rangers through the first five innings, but he allowed a run on three singles in the sixth inning.
Jun 29 2021Flexen did not factor into the decision during Tuesday's loss to the Blue Jays. He allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen served up a two-run double to Marcus Semien in the second frame, then worked his way into trouble in the fifth when he loaded the bases by allowing a double and back-to-back free passes. Luckily, the right-hander was able to limit the damage to one run on a sacrifice fly by Cavan Biggio. After tallying 14 strikeouts and giving up just one run in his previous two starts, Tuesday's shaky outing was a bit of a disappointment, including his season-worst three walks. The 26-year-old will carry a 3.97 ERA and 1.30 WHIP into his next projected appearance at home Sunday against Texas.
Jun 22 2021Flexen didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Rockies despite tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and two walks while fanning six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen has looked excellent over his last few outings and has given up one or fewer runs in three of his last five appearances while posting four quality starts in that span. The four-year veteran improved his ERA to 3.87 with another strong outing, and he will try to keep this blistering form going when he takes the ball next. His upcoming outing is scheduled for next week at Toronto.
Jun 16 2021Flexen (6-3) tossed eight scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and striking out eight without walking a batter as he took an easy win over the Twins on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen was brilliant in this one and never let up despite the Mariners jumping out to an early big lead. Five of his season-high eight strikeouts came via the changeup and he generated a total of 15 whiffs in the dominant effort. The 26-year-old lowered his ERA to 4.12 but still has just 44 strikeouts over 67.2 innings. He's lined up for another potentially big performance early next week at home against the Rockies, a team that owns a .570 OPS on the road this year.
Jun 9 2021Flexen allowed three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings versus Detroit on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander earned a quality start, his fourth in 11 outings this year. Flexen has done alright as a No. 5 starter with a 4.68 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 36:12 K:BB across 59.2 innings this season. Inconsistency has been an issue for the 26-year-old at times. He lines up for a favorable matchup at home against Minnesota next week.
Jun 3 2021Flexen (5-3) suffered the loss against the Athletics on Wednesday, pitching six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's final line was unimpressive, but he was mostly effective outside of a disastrous third inning during which he yielded five runs on four hits and a walk. Flexen kept Oakland off the scoreboard in each of his other five frames, but he took the loss nonetheless as opposing pitcher Sean Manaea hurled a complete-game shutout. Flexen has been pretty hit-or-miss this season, allowing zero or one runs in five of his 10 starts but yielding five-plus runs three times. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start at Detroit next Wednesday.
May 27 2021Flexen (5-2) won Thursday's 5-0 match with Texas, pitching seven scoreless innings and allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: One start after allowing eight runs in less than two innings to San Diego, Flexen rebounded with easily his best performance of the season. The righty needed only 87 pitches to complete seven innings and faced no more than four batters in any single inning. He's now the owner of a 4.34 ERA with a 3:1 K:BB ratio.
May 22 2021Flexen (4-2) took the loss against San Diego on Friday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out one across 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen entered the contest with a respectable 3.46 ERA on the campaign and departed with that number having ballooned to 5.09. The Padres posted four runs against him in the first inning and another four in the second, forcing Flexen out of the contest after he retired only five batters. The right-hander gave up a pair of homers in the start after having yielded only three long balls through his first 39 innings of the season. He'll try to regain his footing in his next start, which is tentatively lined up to come at Oakland on Wednesday.
May 15 2021Flexen (4-1) picked up the win against Cleveland on Friday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second time in his past three starts, Flexen did not register a single strikeout, but that didn't prevent him from earning his fourth win of the season. He limited Cleveland to only one extra-base hit (a double) and threw 56 of his 85 pitches for strikes. Despite a paltry 16.3 percent strikeout rate on the campaign, Flexen has pitched to a steady 3.46 ERA thanks in part to yielding only three home runs over 39 innings. He's lined up to next take the mound Wednesday at home versus Detroit.
May 7 2021Flexen (3-1) allowed four runs on 10 hits and a walk over 6.1 innings Friday, striking out two and earning a win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers jumped all over Flexen out of the gate, tagging him for three runs in the first two innings. The last bit of damage against him was a Nate Lowe solo blast in the third before Flexen settled into a groove. Seattle took the 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh to get him the win. The 26-year-old is sporting a 3.78 ERA and 23:6 K:BB through 33.1 frames. Flexen is lined up to face Cleveland at home next week.
May 1 2021Flexen did not factor in the decision versus the Angels on Friday, tossing four innings and allowing three runs on four hits and one walk. He did not strike out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Seattle offense provided plenty of run support for the right-hander, but he needed 87 pitches to get through four frames and didn't come out for the fifth despite being staked to a 4-3 lead. Flexen entered the contest having pitched two consecutive quality starts, so Friday's outing was certainly disappointing from an individual standpoint. The 26-year-old has mixed three outstanding starts with two poor ones through five appearances, which has resulted in an overall 2.74 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 21:5 K:BB across 23 innings. His next start could come at home against Baltimore.
Apr 24 2021Flexen improved to 2-1 on the season Saturday against the Red Sox, striking out seven in seven innings while allowing just one run on four hits and a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen held the hosts scoreless for 6.2 innings before allowing an RBI single to Marwin Gonzalez. The 26-year-old's time in Korea last year appears to have served him very well, as his 2.74 ERA and 21:5 K:BB through his first four starts this season look nothing like his 8.07 ERA and 49:54 K:BB from his first three partial seasons with the Mets.
Apr 17 2021Flexen (1-1) allowed one run on 10 hits over six innings in a loss to the Astros on Saturday. He struck out three and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Only one of the 10 hits went for extra bases and Flexen did not hand out a single free pass, but even so he was fortunate to escape with just one run on his ledger. The Mariners' defense turned two double plays behind him. Flexen is holding his own in his return stateside (3.38 ERA), but he would be well served to dial the strikeouts back up. He faces a tough road test in Boston next weekend.
Apr 11 2021Flexen allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen labored through his second start of the year, with the biggest hit being a Byron Buxton two-run homer in the fifth. The Mariners' offense took over after that, getting Flexen off the hook. He's pitched to a 4.50 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over 10 innings. Consistency could be an issue for the 26-year-old right-hander as he attempts to reestablish himself in the majors after a year in the KBO. His next start is expected to be Saturday at home versus the Astros.
Apr 4 2021Flexen (1-0) earned the win against San Francisco on Saturday, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen carried over the momentum from two strong Cactus League outings into the regular season, holding San Francisco to only one extra-base hit and no runs over five frames. He induced only eight swinging strikes and ran his pitch count up to 94, but those concerns are easy to look past considering the final outcome. Flexen turned his career around with a strong showing in the KBO last season, and he could quickly become a fantasy commodity if he's able to put together more outings like the one he posted Saturday. The right-hander's next start will come Sunday at Minnesota.
Mar 30 2021Flexen fired three scoreless innings during which he allowed just two hits and no walks in a Cactus League tie with the Reds on Monday. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander wrapped up Cactus League play with eight scoreless frames across his last two appearances, particularly encouraging considering that pair of outings followed a six-earned-run hiccup versus the Dodgers on March 17. Flexen will open the 2021 campaign as the Mariners' No. 5 starter after revitalizing his career overseas in the KBO last season.
Mar 24 2021Flexen fired five scoreless innings in a Cactus League win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, allowing three hits and a walk while recording four strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming off an outing in which he'd allowed six earned runs across just three innings, Tuesday's effort was equivalent to a sigh of relief for Flexen, who's being counted on as the No. 5 starter. The right-hander worked up to 69 pitches, throwing 47 for strikes in a crisp outing.
Mar 19 2021Flexen allowed six earned runs on nine hits and a walk over three innings in a Cactus League loss to the Angels on Wednesday. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander's spring ERA climbed to 10.13 across three starts with Wednesday's outing, which Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports included the first eight hitters in the Angels lineup coming to bat over the first inning-plus -- resulting in three runs -- due to Flexen's poor command. Flexen was ultimately pulled for a reliever in the second and then brought back out for the third inning, which allowed him to settle down some and finish on a high note with a strikeout. "Obviously Flex wasn't as sharp early in the game as he was in his first couple starts," said manager Scott Servais. "I give him credit for hanging in there. He did not have his best stuff or command but he'll learn from it and move forward."
Mar 12 2021Flexen allowed a two-run home run, issued a pair of walks and hit a batter over three innings in a Cactus League tie with the Dodgers on Thursday. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As his final line implies, Flexen had a bit of an eventful start, but considering he was facing the defending champions and a lineup full of regulars, the end result wasn't necessarily disappointing. Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports Flexen largely accomplished his goal of mixing in all of his pitches, and that the veteran's fastball sat between 92 and 95 mph. "My cutter was really good tonight, I thought my curveball was sharp tonight," Flexen said.
Mar 6 2021Flexen, who pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2020, impressed manager Scott Servais with his two-inning Cactus League debut against the White Sox on Friday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. "I really like what I saw," Servais said. "I think he does it a little bit differently. He's got the higher arm slot, and we saw all four pitches today. Maybe not as good as command as he would've liked to have with the secondary pitches, but I really liked how he threw the ball." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mariners took a two-year, $4.75 million flyer on Flexen after he looked like a drastically improved pitcher with the Doosan Bears last season, and the right-hander seemingly carried over a lot of the positives into his first time facing MLB hitters since 2019. Flexen impressively got through the potent trio of Tim Anderson, Luis Robert and Jose Abreu in the first inning, and after allowing the first three hitters in the second to reach safely, he retired Adam Eaton, Danny Mendrick and Seby Zavala. on strikeouts to finish off his outing. Flexen flashed an impressive pitch repertoire as well, complementing a sweeping curveball with a low-90s fastball and a cutter-changeup combination.
Dec 9 2020Flexen signed a two-year, $4.75 million contract with the Mariners on Wednesday, Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexen spent the 2020 season with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization, and he had solid results, posting a 3.01 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 132:30 K:BB over 116.2 innings. He had double-digit strikeout totals in each of his final two starts of the year, and he'll now return to MLB on a two-year deal. The 26-year-old struggled to generate much production during his time in the majors from 2017 to 2019, but he'll attempt to carry his momentum from the KBO into improved results with the Mariners.
Dec 7 2019Flexen signed a contract with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization on Saturday, Marc Carig of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Flexan was designated for assignment by the Mets on Friday, and he'll now move his career overseas rather than sticking around in the minors. The 25-year-old struggled during his major-league stints over the past three seasons, posting an 8.07 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 49:54 K:BB across 68 innings.
Dec 6 2019Flexen was designated for assignment by the Mets on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Brad Brach returning to the club on a one-year deal, Flexen loses his 40-man spot and will now be subjected to waivers. Flexen was always a longshot to survive the winter on the Mets' roster, as he continued to struggle at the big-league level in 2019 despite an uptick in velocity and was not brought back in September when rosters expanded.
Aug 25 2019Flexen was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.
Aug 22 2019Flexen was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.
Jul 2 2019Flexen was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.Subscribe now to instantly reveal our take on this news.
Jun 15 2019Flexen was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse prior to Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.Subscribe now to instantly reveal our take on this news.
Jul 8 2018Flexen (0-2) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two through three innings as he took the loss Sunday against Tampa Bay.Flexen was roughed up in the first inning, as he surrendered a three-run blast to C.J. Cron to put his team in an early 3-0 hole. He was lifted with a 5-0 deficit after giving up two more runs in the third. During Flexen's limited time in the major leagues this season, he's been anything but sharp, posting an alarming 12.79 ERA and 3.16 WHIP with three strikeouts over 6.1 innings. After a discouraging outing, he seems unlikely to stick with the big club, especially with Noah Syndergaard (finger) and Jason Vargas (calf) on the verge of a return.
Jul 8 2018Flexen was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday prior to his start against the Rays, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.Flexen was announced as the starter Friday, so the team just needed to option Drew Smith to create room on the 25-man roster. Flexen has an uninspiring 4.84 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 13 starts with the 51s in 2018.
Jun 23 2018Flexen will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.Jason Vargas (calf) is headed to the disabled list and Flexen will come up to take his spot on the roster. Flexen is also an option to start Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers in place of Vargas, although he's not a lock for that assignment according to DiComo. Flexen had a poor outing with the big club earlier in the year (three earned runs, eight hits over two innings) and he's mostly struggled with Las Vegas, posting a 5.43 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 12 appearances.
Jun 20 2018Flexen will be called up to join the Mets on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The Mets' bullpen is taxed after throwing 5.2 innings Tuesday, so the team will summon a fresh arm from Triple-A. A corresponding move has yet to be announced. Flexen is unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset during his time with the club. He's allowed seven runs (three earned) in two innings with the Mets this season and has a 5.43 ERA in 58 innings for Triple-A Las Vegas.
May 19 2018Flexen was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday.Flexen, who briefly competed for a spot in the Mets' starting rotation in spring training before being assigned to minor-league camp, had a 3.40 ERA and 1.49 WHIP with 31 strikeouts over 39.2 innings for Las Vegas. The 23-year-old is likely to be used as a low-leverage reliever in New York but could also step in as a starter, if necessary.
Feb 14 2018Flexen is set to compete for a job in the Mets' rotation this spring, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo reports.More likely than not, Flexen will wind up starting at Triple-A Las Vegas, with Zack Wheeler (arm), Steven Matz (elbow), Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman also battling for two of the spot in the club's rotation. In 2017, he appeared in 14 games at the major-league level -- starting nine of those -- and allowed 42 earned runs in 48 innings, including 11 home runs and a rough 36:35 K:BB. The spring camp should provide the right-hander with more experience against big-league hitting and he remains a candidate to come up to the team this summer.
Sep 25 2017Flexen will start the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Braves, Chris Bumbaca of MLB.com reports.Flexen will rejoin the rotation for the first time since Sept. 3, when he was lit up for seven runs over four innings. The rookie has found his footing in the bullpen with one run allowed over five frames, but his mediocre results as a starter earlier this season will make it difficult to depend on him as a streaming option Monday. Since he hasn't started in nearly three weeks, Flexen could be subjected to a limited pitch count in what's likely just a spot start.
Sep 25 2017Flexen (3-5) allowed four runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over five innings and took the loss Monday against Atlanta.Flexen was starting for the first time since September 3. He gave up nine home runs in eight outings in the rotation prior to Monday's, and he was touched up for another one by Ozzie Albies in the fourth inning. Flexen's ERA sits at 7.14 and he is unlikely to receive another start this season.
Sep 8 2017Flexen will have his next start skipped, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports Friday.Flexen was originally supposed to start Saturday against Cincinnati, but instead the Mets will push up Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom to start Saturday and Sunday respectively. While there has been no official confirmation, this likely means Matt Harvey will start Tuesday's series opener in Chicago. Flexen owns a brutal 7.85 ERA and has allowed seven runs without completing five innings in each of his past two starts, so the Mets will use their upcoming off day to keep the ball out of his hands.
Sep 3 2017Flexen (3-4) allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out a single batter through four innings during Sunday's loss to Houston. With a 7.85 ERA, 2.07 WHIP and 5.9 K/9 through his first eight career starts, Flexen is clearly overmatched at the highest level. After all, the 23-year-old righty topped out at just seven starts at Double-A Binghamton before joining the Mets. At best, Flexen is a potential flier against favorable opponents. But in most settings, it's probably best to fade him entirely considering his current form. He lines up to face the Reds at Citi Field in his next start.
Aug 30 2017Flexen (3-3) was ripped for seven runs on seven hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in Tuesday's blowout loss to the Reds. He struck out four. This one started out ugly -- five first-inning runs crossed the plate against the rookie, thanks in large part to a Scott Schebler grand slam. While Flexen has had some spots of success, he's also walked four batters in each of his last four starts; in fact, he has more walks (28) than strikeouts (27) through his first seven MLB appearances. The Mets, desperate for rotation help, skipped the 23-year-old past Triple-A and straight to the majors, and it's abundantly clear that he wasn't ready to make that leap.
Aug 24 2017Flexen (3-2) held the Diamondbacks to two runs on six hits and four walks over six innings Wednesday, striking out five and coming away with the win.Generally speaking, issuing four free passes in Arizona's ballpark -- especially to the hitters at the top of the order -- is a dangerous game, but Flexen was able to work his way out of trouble on multiple occasions. He did so with some help from his defense, as center fielder Juan Lagares nailed A.J. Pollock trying to score on a shallow fly ball in the fifth. After scuffling through his first two big-league starts, Flexen's now won three of his last four, but he also has an ugly 15:15 K:BB in that span. He may be of some use in deep leagues if you can pick your spots carefully, but the upside isn't very high.
Aug 19 2017Flexen (2-2) took the loss against the Marlins on Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings while striking out one. While he was able to limit the damage, a lack of control or run support spelled doom for Flexen in this one. He has yet to complete six innings in any of his five big-league starts and has walked at least three batters in four of them, making him an extremely risky fantasy play heading into his next outing Wednesday at home against the Diamondbacks.
Aug 9 2017Flexen (1-1) gave up three runs on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings while striking out four in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Rangers.Staked to a 4-0 lead by the second inning, Flexen held Texas at bay until the fifth before Joey Gallo and Adrian Beltre homered and chased the young right-hander from the game. While he did record his first big-league win, Flexen's 8.49 ERA and 8:8 K:BB in 11.2 innings since his recall indicate he's not yet ready for prime time. He'll remain in the rotation for the moment, however, with his next start coming Sunday in Philadelphia.
Aug 7 2017Flexen (finger) will start Tuesday's game against the Rangers, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports.Flexen lasted just three innings in his previous outing Aug. 2 against the Rockies while dealing with a blister, but even if he hadn't experienced the issue, his night likely wouldn't have lasted much longer after he had already served up five runs on eight hits and a walk. It seems Flexen's blister won't leave him with any restrictions as he enters what will likely be a two-start week, barring one of the Mets' injured pitchers returning from the disabled list in time to replace the rookie in the rotation for Sunday's game against the Phillies.
Aug 2 2017Flexen was lifted from Wednesday's game after three innings due to a blister on his finger, Marc Carig of Newsday reports.Flexen had allowed five runs -- all in the third inning -- on eight hits before being replaced by Chasen Bradford, and this blister issue could help explain his early struggles. It's unclear how long this ailment will keep him sidelined, but this could likely be his last turn in the rotation before he is sent back to the minors.
Jul 30 2017Flexen has been named the starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Marc Carig of Newsday reports..Flexen made his first major-league start Thursday against the Padres, surrendering three earned runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts over three tough innings. Despite his poor performance, the 23-year-old will be granted another start, this time in the brutal pitching environment of Colorado.
Jul 27 2017Flexen (0-1) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and four walks while striking out two batters through just three innings during Thursday's loss to the Padres.Flexen threw just 69 pitches and was clearly a little overmatched Thursday. However, in the 23-year-old righty's defense, he had made just seven starts above the High-A level. Even with a sterling 1.66 ERA and 9.3 K/9 over seven outings with Double-A Binghamton, he probably shouldn't have been expected to show well in his debut at the highest level. A return to the minors is likely.
Jul 27 2017Flexen has been officially recalled ahead of his start Thursday against the Padres. He's been tabbed as the Mets' scheduled starter since Zack Wheeler (forearm) landed on the disabled list, but the Mets have now officially added him to the roster. Flexen will be making his major league debut after making the leap from Double-A. He posted a sterling 1.66 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP over 48.2 innings at Double-A Binghamton prior to being promoted.
