May 12 2025Okert allowed one hit with no walks and no strikeouts across two scoreless innings Monday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Monday's outing was Okert's 17th of the season and his 15th scoreless appearance. He's backed that up with an excellent 24:3 K:BB across 22 innings. Despite his success, Okert hasn't typically been used in high-leverage spots and has only two holds on the campaign.
Mar 27 2025The Astros selected Okert's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert earned a bullpen spot with a stellar spring that saw him toss 10.2 scoreless innings with a 16.2 K:BB. He will be utilized in middle relief.
Aug 24 2024The Twins designated Okert for assignment Saturday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert will lose his spot in the Twins' bullpen after posting a 5.09 ERA and 1.50 WHIP across 35.1 innings on the season. Scott Blewett was promoted from Triple-A St. Paul to fill the open roster spot.
Aug 12 2024The Twins reinstated Okert (personal) from the bereavement list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Right-hander Randy Dobnak was optioned to Triple-A St. Paul to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for Okert, who was away from the team for the past week while tending to the personal matter. Okert has mostly operated as a middle-relief arm for the Twins this season, logging a 4.45 ERA and 1.48 WHIP to go with three wins, one save and six holds over 30.1 innings.
Aug 5 2024The Twins placed Okert (personal) on the bereavement list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert will be away from the team for up to seven days as he tends to personal issues. In his stead, Josh Winder was called up from Triple-A St. Paul to serve out of the bullpen. Okert has a 4.45 ERA in 30.1 innings with the Twins this season.
Jul 23 2024Okert will start Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday will mark Okert's first start of the season and just the third of his MLB career. The 33-year-old southpaw has pitched more than one inning in just three of his 34 appearances this year, so he'll likely depart in the second inning, at which point David Festa is expected to handle bulk-relief duties.
Jun 30 2024Okert allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one over a scoreless inning in Saturday's 5-1 victory over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert started the season somewhat slowly with a 3.97 ERA and six walks in 11.1 innings in his first 13 outings. He's since posted a 2.57 ERA with just four walks in 14 innings since May 11. While his 8.5 K/9 is down from an 11.2 K/9 last season, he's still been productive with a low 2.6 BB/9 and 1.11 HR/9. He's become a steady setup man for the Twins but isn't used in many high-leverage situations to earn holds or saves.
Apr 10 2024Okert earned the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Dodgers, allowing one hit while recording a strikeout in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first save in seven big-league seasons for Okert. The Twins appear to be utilizing a committee approach in the late innings with Jhoan Duran (oblique) on the injured list. Griffin Jax, Minnesota's primary high-leverage option, worked the eighth inning Wednesday against the middle of the Dodgers' lineup. The left-hander Okert has allowed one run on five hits and a pair of walks while logging seven strikeouts through his first four innings this season.
Apr 4 2024Okert threw a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's win at Milwaukee with a walk and three strikeouts. He would have be in line for a save had the Twins not scored in the top of the ninth inning. "At that point in the game, Okert with the experience was probably the answer," manager Rocco Baldelli told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Griffin Jax, who has Minnesota's only save with Jhoan Duran (oblique) on the injured list, was used in the eighth inning against the heart of the Brewers' lineup. While Okert isn't likely to get many save chances, he appears to be in the high-leverage mix and could see some ninth-inning opportunities when Baldelli is playing matchups.
Feb 11 2024The Twins acquired Okert from the Marlins on Sunday in exchange for utility player Nick Gordon, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert spent the last three seasons in Miami, most recently compiling a 4.45 ERA and 1.26 WHIP with 73 strikeouts over 58.2 innings in 64 appearances, including two starts, in 2023. The southpaw will now look to carve out a late-inning role with the Twins heading into his seventh major-league campaign.
Jan 11 2024Okert signed a one-year, $1.1 million contract with the Marlins on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert threw a career-high 58.2 innings in 2023 and maintained a 4.45 ERA to go along with a 1.26 WHIP. His 73:24 K:BB was more impressive, and he should shoulder a heavy workload in the Marlins' bullpen once again in 2024.
Sep 9 2023Okert will serve as an opener for the Marlins on Sunday against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Phillies having Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper among their first three hitters, a left-handed opener makes sense. It's not clear who the Marlins will use as a bulk reliever, but Bryan Hoeing and Edward Cabrera would seem to be candidates.
Jul 17 2023Okert (3-1) took the loss Sunday against the Orioles, coughing up three runs on four hits in only one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getting the nod as the opener in a bullpen day, Okert gave up doubles to the first two batters he faced before Anthony Santander crushed a slider over the center-field fence. Long balls have been an issue for the southpaw reliever lately -- he's served up three homers in his last 9.1 innings, posting a 6.75 ERA and 1,39 WHIP over that stretch despite a 13:2 K:BB. Okert already has 10 holds and three wins in 38 appearances on the season, but his grip on a set-up role could be tenuous.
Jul 15 2023Okert will serve as an opener for the Marlins on Sunday in Baltimore, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Johnny Cueto would seem to be a good bet to serve as a bulk reliever in the game. Okert has been fantastic for the Marlins this season, holding a 2.53 ERA and 43:11 K:BB over 32 relief innings.
Jun 19 2023Okert gave up a hit in a scoreless seventh inning to record his seventh hold of the season in Sunday's win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty continues to be stingy. Okert has been scored upon only three times in 22 appearances since the beginning of May, posting a 0.90 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 28:5 K:BB through 20 innings over that stretch. His outstanding numbers have earned him a more prominent role in the Miami bullpen, and over his last nine games he's picked up two wins and four holds. While he's no threat to A.J. Puk's closing job, Okert has emerged as a reliable setup arm alongside Dylan Floro and Tanner Scott.
May 8 2023Okert (1-0) allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk but got the win in an extra innings affair versus the Cubs on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert was unable to shut the Cubs out in the 13th to try and get the save but wound up with the win instead. He now sits at one win and one hold on the year and has been a reliable arm once again this season with a 3.52 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and a 10:5 K:BB over 7.2 innings.
Apr 3 2023Okert (groin) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert doesn't look as though he's on pace to be activated from the 15-day injured list when he's first eligible April 11, but his absence shouldn't extend much beyond that if he's able to steer clear of setbacks as he recovers from the left adductor tightness that cropped up late in spring training. If Okert checks out fine following the upcoming live session, he could be cleared to head out on a brief minor-league rehab assignment soon thereafter.
Mar 30 2023Okert (groin) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert developed adductor tightness in his inner left thigh toward the end of spring training and figures to miss at least the first couple of weeks of the 2023 regular season. He can be a high-leverage option for the Marlins whenever he's fit again for MLB competition.
Mar 26 2023The Marlins announced Sunday that Okert (groin) will remain at the team's spring camp in Jupiter and won't be part of the Opening Day roster, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert is still working through left adductor soreness, so expect Miami to place him on the 15-day injured list within the next few days. The 32-year-old is projected to be a late-inning option for the Marlins in 2023 once healthy.
Mar 6 2023Okert (triceps) has made three Grapefruit League appearances to date, covering three scoreless innings while striking out two and allowing two hits and one walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert looks to be back to full strength for spring training after he finished the 2022 season on the 15-day injured list with left triceps tightness. The 31-year-old reliever turned in a 2.98 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 63:26 K:BB in 51.1 innings a season ago and should factor into the Marlins' setup mix once again in 2023.
Sep 29 2022Okert was placed on the 15-day injured list with left triceps tightness Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 26, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Okert hasn't pitched since giving up three runs (two earned) on no hits and two walks while failing to record an out against the Cubs on Sept. 21. He's apparently dealing with a triceps injury and will be forced to miss the final week of the season, even though his placement on the injured list was backdated. The southpaw was charged with losses in three of his final four appearances of the season but had a solid season overall, picking up 19 saves while posting a 2.98 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 51.1 innings over 60 appearances.
Aug 12 2022Okert gave up a hit and struck out three over 1.1 scoreless innings Thursday to record his 14th hold of the season in a win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old had a rough patch in late July and early August, giving up runs in three straight appearances, but he appears to have righted the ship. Okert has been the Marlins' top setup man from the left side since Tanner Scott took over the closer role, and he's provided some solid fantasy value with five wins, a 2.77 ERA, a 1.08 WHIP and a career-high 31.3 percent strikeout rate through 39 innings on the year in addition to his career high in holds.
Jul 9 2022Okert gave up a run on a hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch while striking out one in the eighth inning Friday to record his 12th hold of the season in a win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Brought in to face New York's 2-3-4 hitters in a 4-1 game, Okert made things a little too interesting by serving up a solo shot to Francisco Lindor before loading the bases with two outs. Fortunately, the southpaw got Eduardo Escobar to fly out to end the rally. Okert has given up runs in back-to-back appearances, but with Tanner Scott still holding down the closer role, Okert's spot as the Marlins' top left-handed setup man seems fairly secure. Since the beginning of June, he sports a 2.70 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB through 13.1 innings with three wins and six holds.
Jun 3 2022Okert walked one and struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning Thursday to record his seventh hold of the season in a win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran came into the season viewed as arguably the third lefty in the Marlins' bullpen, but Okert now has more than twice as many holds as Tanner Scott and Richard Bleier combined. His 2.30 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB through 15.2 innings are equally impressive, and Okert could begin to see situational save chances given the volatility of Miami's other high-leverage options so far this season.
Apr 10 2022Okert (1-0) picked up the win in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Giants, striking out all four batters he faced. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing the team that drafted him back in 2012, Okert took over from Pablo Lopez to begin the sixth inning and put together an outstanding first appearance of the season, getting rewarded with a win when Jesus Sanchez brought home the winning run in the top of the seventh. Okert is coming off his best MLB season in 2021, but his low 90s fastball-slider combination plays best in a situational or middle-relief role, so the 30-year-old southpaw isn't likely to see much high-leverage work.
Jul 28 2021Okert (0-1) took the loss Wednesday versus Baltimore. He allowed a run on four walks in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw allowed a leadoff walk to Cedric Mullins before allowing the speedy outfielder to take second base with a wild pitch. Austin Hays sacrificed to move Mullins to third, and Okert responded with intentional walks to Trey Mancini and Ryan Mountcastle to set up a double play opportunity. It didn't work, as Okert then gave up a walkoff walk to Ryan McKenna. The loss was the 30-year-old's first of the season in 11 appearances. He owns a reasonable 2.38 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB across 11.1 innings this year.
Jun 29 2021The Marlins recalled Okert from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty reliever has impressed at Triple-A this season, pitching to a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings while striking out 29 batters and walking just one. Further, Okert yielded just one home run in his 15 appearances. He last appeared in the MLB in 2018, when he pitched seven games for the Giants and had a 1.23 ERA.
Apr 10 2018Okert was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Chris Haft of MLB.com reports. The lefty will be available out of the bullpen Tuesday as he takes the roster spot of Johnny Cueto, who was placed on the DL with an ankle sprain. Okert started the year down at Triple-A and has made two appearances at Sacramento, notching six strikeouts over 2.1 scoreless innings. It could be a short stint for him, however, as the Giants need to add a starter to take Cueto's place in the rotation on Wednesday.
Mar 9 2018Okert allowed one walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning in Thursday's spring win over Seattle.Okert is on the outside looking in when it comes to the Giants' projected Opening Day bullpen. The southpaw has looked sharp in his first four spring appearances, but he will have to build off this momentum to overtake fellow lefty, Josh Osich, to earn one of the club's final bullpen jobs.
Sep 1 2017The Giants recalled Okert from Triple-A Sacramento, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. The southpaw owns a 6.75 major-league ERA in 21.1 innings. Okert will work the middle innings, likely during mostly low-leverage appearances.
Jul 15 2017Okert has pitched in 5.2 innings since being called up June 23, collecting seven strikeouts. On the season, Okert's strikeouts stands at 14 in 18.2 innings with a high ERA of 6.75. It's been a step backwards for the reliever, who made his major league debut in 2016 and recorded 14 strikeouts in 14.0 innings with an ERA of 6.75. The big difference has been his lack of composure with runners on base. He's only stranding 50 percent of baserunners, an incredibly low number that should only improve as Okert continues getting chances.
Jun 23 2017Okert was recalled Friday from Triple-A Sacramento, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Okert was sent down to Triple-A to regain confidence, and he performed admirably for Sacramento. he notched four saves over 12 innings with a 2.25 ERA and a sparkling 0.67 WHIP. Okert owns a 6.23 ERA at the MLB level this season, but the Giants are hoping he'll pitch more like he did in his first major league sting last season, when he managed a 3.21 ERA and 14 strikeouts in as many innings.
