Jul 22 2018Leiter was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.Leiter appeared in six games out of the bullpen during his latest big-league stint, allowing three runs while striking out three over 5.2 innings. Philadelphia will make a corresponding move ahead of Monday's series opener against the Dodgers.
Jun 30 2018Leiter was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Leiter has bounced between Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia throughout the year. He has a 4.50 ERA in eight innings with the Phillies, though his strikeout (25.7 percent) and walk (5.7 percent) rates are each strong. He'll take the low-leverage spot in the bullpen which was vacated by the optioned Hector Neris.
Jun 16 2018Leiter was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday. In eight innings for the Phillies this season, Leiter has a mediocre 4.50 ERA, though his underlying numbers (25.7 percent strikeout rate and 5.7 percent walk rate) are solid. Jake Thompson and Yacksiel Rios were called up to take the place of Leiter and Luis Garcia (wrist).
May 31 2018Leiter was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Leiter will join the Phillies for the first time all season to offer a fresh arm in long relief after Drew Hutchison, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move, and Victor Arano both worked a pair of relief innings in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers. The 27-year-old owns a pristine 0.82 ERA and 15:4 K:BB across 11 innings between High-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season.
May 15 2018Leiter (forearm) was activated from the disabled list Tuesday.Leiter has yet to make his season debut after being sidelined by a forearm strain suffered back in spring training. He'll likely fill a low-leverage role in the Phillies' bullpen, though he did make 11 starts for the team last season and could be an option to make another handful at some point this season.
May 7 2018Leiter (forearm) began a rehab assignment Sunday at High-A Clearwater, tossing a perfect eighth inning and striking out a batter. The appearance marked Leiter's first game action in a competitive setting since mid-March after a forearm strain suffered in spring training resulted in the right-hander opening the season on the 10-day disabled list. Leiter had been in contention for a rotation spot prior to sustaining the injury, but he'll most likely be deployed in long relief or work as a starter at Triple-A Lehigh Valley once he's activated from the DL. He only threw eight pitches Sunday, so he'll have to build up his count in subsequent rehab outings before an activation can be considered forthcoming.
Apr 30 2018Leiter threw 20 pitches in live batting practice Monday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Leiter continues to ramp up his activity as he works his way back from a mild flexor strain that he suffered back in March. He was able to incorporate his entire repertoire in Monday's session with no issues. Barring any setbacks, Leiter should be cleared to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment in the coming weeks.
Apr 25 2018Leiter (forearm) will throw another bullpen session Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.Leiter resumed throwing last week and will continue to work his way back from a mild flexor strain that he picked up in mid-March. The right-hander remains without a concrete timetable but expect an update on his status once he's ready for a rehab assignment.
Apr 15 2018Leiter (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.Although Leiter seems to be making solid progress rehabbing his forearm, it's unclear how he'll be used when he comes off the disabled list. While the Phillies could opt to use him at the back end of their rotation instead of Ben Lively, Leiter may be assigned to the bullpen once healthy. Over 27 games (90.2 innings) last season, 11 of which were starts, Leiter threw to the tune of a 4.96 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.
Apr 4 2018Leiter (forearm) had a normal MRI and could start throwing during this homestand, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Since his MRI came back clean, Leiter could be an option to join the rotation in the not-so-distant future. However, No. 5 starter Ben Lively was pretty effective Tuesday, so if he can continue to string together competitive starts, Leiter may be relegated to Triple-A or the bullpen once healthy. Additionally, Jared Eickhoff (lat) will be back at some point, so there could soon be some decent competition for starts at the back of the Phillies' rotation.
Apr 3 2018Leiter (forearm) will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Leiter opened the season on the disabled list after suffering a flexor strain near the end of camp. While manager Gabe Kapler said Leiter hasn't suffered a setback in his recovery, his lack of progress prompted the Phillies to send him for some additional testing. He was originally expected to miss most, if not all of April while recovering, but a more concrete timetable will hopefully emerge once his test results are known. In the meantime, Ben Lively should continue to fill in as the Phillies' fifth starter until Leiter or Jerad Eickhoff return from the DL.
Mar 29 2018The Phillies placed Leiter (forearm) on the MLB.com Thursday.Leiter initially looked like a good bet to fill a rotation spot at the beginning of the season after Jerad Eickhoff sustained a lat strain earlier in the month, but both players will end up on the DL after the former suffered a setback of his own just days after latter. The Phillies officially diagnosed Leiter with a mild flexor strain, an injury that is expected to keep him unavailable until at least late April. The multi-week injuries to Leiter and Eickhoff allowed Ben Lively to break camp as Philadephia's No. 5 starter.
Mar 20 2018An MRI revealed that Leiter has a mild flexor strain, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. It seems like Leiter avoided the worst-case scenario, but he's still expected to miss a good chunk of time. The Phillies plan to shut him down for 2-to-3 weeks, meaning that the earliest he can return to action is late April. This essentially guarantees a trip to the DL to start the season, which opens the fifth starter competition back up for Ben Lively, Zach Eflin and non-roster invitee Drew Hutchison.
Mar 19 2018Leiter returned to Philadelphia to undergo testing for forearm tightness, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. It's not a good sign for Leiter, who was likely to open the season as the Phillies' long reliever with a shot to move into the rotation later in the year. "Forearm tightness" is one of the initial diagnoses which sometimes turns into Tommy John surgery, though there have been no indications yet from the team that the issue is potentially that serious.
Mar 12 2018Leiter no longer appears to be in contention for the fifth spot in the Phillies rotation after the team signed Jake Arrieta to a three-year, $75 million contract Sunday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Leiter had been competing with Zach Eflin, Ben Lively, Jake Thompson and non-roster invitee Drew Hutchison for the No. 5 role, but the Phillies now appear set to proceed with a rotation of Aaron Nola, Arrieta, Vince Velasquez, Nick Pivetta and Jerad Eickhoff to open the season. It's a disappointing development for the right-hander, who appeared to have an edge on his competition for the final rotation spot after supplying a 1.93 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 13 strikeouts over his first 9.1 innings of the spring. Unless one of the Phillies' projected rotation members suffers an injury prior to Opening Day, Leiter looks poised to compete with Thompson for a long-relief role over the rest of spring training.
Mar 5 2018Leiter pitched three scoreless and hitless innings Monday while striking out two in a Grapefruit League win over Minnesota.Leiter entered the spring in a competition for the final spot in the Phillies' starting rotation and he now possesses a 0.00 ERA, 0.43 WHIP and nine strikeouts through seven innings of spring ball. Leiter worked as both a starter and reliever last season after being called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and he produced a very good 8.3 K/9, but struggled to keep the ball in the park (1.79 HR/9) during his rookie campaign.
Mar 5 2018Leiter pitched three innings Monday, striking out two and allowing no runs and no hits in the Grapefruit League win over Minnesota.Leiter entered the spring in a competition for the final spot in the Phillies' starting rotation and he now possesses a 0.00 ERA, 0.43 WHIP and nine strikeouts through seven innings of spring ball. Leiter worked as both a starter and reliever last season after being called up from Triple-A Lehigh, and he produced a very good 8.34 strikeout per nine innings rate, showing an advanced ability to fan batters. Even if he does win a starting spot, however, there are better back-end fantasy options to be found.
Feb 22 2018Leiter will compete for the Phillies' final rotation spot during spring training, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Assuming the Phillies don't bring in another starter to fill out their rotation, Leiter will compete with the likes of Ben Lively, Jake Thompson and Zach Eflin for the remaining rotation spot. The soon-to-be 27-year-old is coming off a rookie campaign during which he started 11 games for Philadelphia and appeared in another 16 out of the bullpen, finishing the year with a 4.96 ERA across 90.2 innings. His xFIP (4.19) suggests he was a bit unlucky to end the year with such a poor ERA. If he's able to lock down a rotation spot out of camp, Leiter could prove to be a solid, albeit low-ceiling back-end starter.
Sep 27 2017Leiter allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.1 innings Wednesday but was able to escape with a no-decision in a 7-5 win over the Nationals. He struck out five.He was on the hook for a loss after getting chased from the game in a three-run fifth inning, but the Phillies responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to re-take the lead. Leiter finishes the year with a 4.96 ERA in the majors, and he'll head into next spring looking to prove he deserves a regular spot in the Phillies rotation rather than returning to a swing man role.
Sep 21 2017Leiter was charged with three runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Thursday. He struck out three, issued one walk and hit a batter.A solo homer off the bat of Curtis Granderson was the only real blemish against Leiter, who left the game in line for the win before the bullpen coughed up the lead. This was his third career quality start. He's missed bats at a decent clip since stepping into the rotation, but Leiter has had some issues with the long ball and he has a tough matchup (vs WAS) in his lone start of the season's final week.
Sep 15 2017Leiter (3-6) allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out nine across six innings to take the loss Friday against the Athletics.Leiter gave up a two-run homer in each of the first two innings while receiving no offensive support, as he dropped his sixth decision of the year. He's allowed 16 earned runs over his last three starts, which raised his ERA over a full run, and fantasy managers are taking on risk if using him while he tries to work through his current slump. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Dodgers.
Sep 9 2017Leiter (3-5) allowed four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight across six innings to earn the victory Saturday against the Nationals.Leiter had a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning before letting the Nationals pull within a single run before the bullpen took over to protect the victory. His ERA his gone up almost a full run over his last three starts, and with a 4.84 ERA, he's become a risky fantasy option. He'll make his next start Friday against the Athletics.
Sep 4 2017Leiter (2-5) took the loss after allowing nine runs - eight earned - on nine hits while striking out two batters over 3.1 innings Monday against the Mets.It was a rare blowup from Leiter, who hadn't allowed more than four runs in any of his six starts prior to Monday's shellacking. The poor outing raised his ERA from 3.88 to 4.74, but he still owns a serviceable 1.30 WHIP and 7.8 K/9. He'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start, which is projected for Saturday against a tough Nationals team.
Aug 30 2017Leiter (2-4) took the loss in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Braves, allowing three runs on nine hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out six. It's the rookie's second straight quality start and third of the season in only six starts total. Leiter's 3.88 ERA is a bit of a mirage, as he's given up six unearned runs through 65 innings, but his 57:25 K:BB is respectable and he could be a useful streaming option in his next outing Monday on the road against the Mets.
Aug 29 2017Leiter won't make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Braves after the game was postponed due to rain, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports. The Phillies and Braves will make up Tuesday's contest as part of a doubleheader Wednesday, with Jerad Eickhoff handling Game 1 of the twin bill for Philadelphia and Mark Leiter set to take the hill in Game 2, according to Montemurro. The postponement will now result in Leiter missing out on a two-start week, as he'll no longer line up for a second start Sunday against the Marlins.
Aug 26 2017Leiter is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Braves, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reports. The Phillies are having Nick Pivetta rejoin their big league rotation Sunday, so Leiter's next scheduled start was pushed back a day. Leiter was dialed in when he took the mound against the Marlins on Wednesday, as he struck out five batters over seven shutout innings and gave up just a single hit along the way.
Aug 24 2017Leiter (2-3) shut the Marlins out over seven innings Wednesday, striking out five while allowing just one hit and two walks in an 8-0 win.The Phillies gave him a run of support in the bottom of the first, and that turned out to be all he'd need. Leiter had gotten the boot from the rotation after his Aug. 15 disaster against San Diego, but he actually never made an appearance during his return to the bullpen before being called upon for this start. Following this outing, it's hard to see him getting pushed out of the starting five again, at least for now, but it's worth monitoring his status as we head toward what would be his next turn in the rotation, Monday against the Braves.
Aug 22 2017Leiter will move into the rotation to start Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The Phillies sent Leiter back to the bullpen after he was tagged for eight runs (four earned) over five innings Aug. 15 against the Padres, but he'll get an opportunity to prove himself in a starting role again after Zach Eflin (shoulder) was forced to the disabled list Monday. It's uncertain if Eflin will miss more than one start with the injury, so it's conceivable that Leiter could head back to the bullpen as soon as next week in the event Eflin makes quick progress in his recovery.
Aug 19 2017Leiter has been moved back to the bullpen, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Leiter struggled in his most recent start against the Padres after dominating out of the pen, so the Phils will return him to a role where he has had more success. Ben Lively will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday to start against the Giants.
Aug 15 2017Leiter (1-3) was charged with eight runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks over five innings in a loss to the Padres on Tuesday. He hit a batter and struck out one.The right-hander struggled from the start and gave up a pair of homers in his later innings, with a couple errors in the fifth compounding the problems. Leiter had allowed just one run with a 16:0 K:BB over 9.1 innings in his last two appearances coming into Tuesday, and it looks like he will continue on in the rotation for a while with Vince Velasquez (finger) on the DL, but should more ups and downs should be expected in his first major-league season. He lines up for a road start against the Giants this weekend.
Aug 14 2017Leiter will start against the Padres on Tuesday, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Leiter has made three starts for the Phillies this season and has a 3.31 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 16.1 innings. The 26-year-old has pitched well since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in late July as well, and is a solid plug-and-play option as he faces the Padres in spacious Petco Park.
Aug 12 2017Leiter will likely replace Vince Velasquez (finger) in the Phillies' rotation, Ben Harris of MLB.com reports.Leiter tossed 4.1 scoreless innings of relief after Velasquez left his last start, so he lines up perfectly to take a spot in the rotation. He'll be facing the Padres and is a sneaky streaming option given how well he has pitched since his recall from the minors (3.48 ERA and 17:0 K:BB in 10.1 innings).
Aug 11 2017Leiter allowed one run on four hits over five innings of relief Thursday after starter Vince Velasquez left the game early with a finger injury. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. That makes back-to-back impressive long-relief outings for Leiter, who allowed two hits while striking out nine over 4.1 scoreless innings last Saturday. The 2013 22nd-round pick could be an option to join the Phillies' rotation if Velasquez can't make his next start.
Jul 30 2017Leiter was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.Leiter was optioned to Triple-A on July 17 but will make his way back to the majors after Pedro Beato was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a hamstring strain. Leiter posted a 4.25 ERA over 36 innings (including three starts) with the Phillies earlier this season. He'll work out of the bullpen for the time being.
Jul 9 2017Leiter has been moved to the bullpen, Jake Lourim and Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer report.Leiter has pitched well since he was inserted into the Phillies' rotation in late-June, but will shift to the pen now that Jared Eickhoff is returning from the disabled list. He will likely see most of his work in long relief and lower-leverage situations.
Jul 5 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said he is unsure what Leiter's role will be once Jared Eickhoff (back) returns from the disabled list, Tom Dougherty of CSN Philadelphia reports.Eickhoff appears to be on track for a return from the disabled list on Sunday which will bump Leiter from the rotation. Mackanin said he would like to keep Leiter in the bullpen unless GM Matt Klentak wants to keep him stretched out at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Jul 4 2017Leiter (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks across 5.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates. He struck out five.Leiter cruised through five innings, allowing his only run on a wild double play in the third, but was removed after yielding a solo home run to Andrew McCutchen with one out in the sixth. Unfortunately, his offense was unable to get anything going against Jameson Taillon, resigning him to his first loss of the season despite a solid effort. Leiter has posted a 3.31 ERA with a solid 16:3 K:BB over 16.1 innings in his last three starts, and he appears to be gaining a grasp on his spot in the rotation. He's not currently scheudled to make another start before the All-Star break, but it would not be surprising to see him given a longer look when the second half commences.
Jul 3 2017Leiter will start Tuesday against the Pirates, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Jared Eickhoff will make a rehab start Tuesday rather than returning to the major-league rotation, leaving Leiter to make one more start before the All-Star break. He has a 3.27 ERA and an 11:1 K:BB in 11 innings over two starts in place of Eickhoff.
Jun 28 2017Leiter pitched five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits, with six strikeouts in Wednesday's 5-4 win in Seattle.Leiter made his second start of the season Wednesday and got hit a lot harder this time around. Three of the nine hits he allowed over five innings were home runs. Leiter's one saving grace was that he didn't allow any walks, keeping the Phillies in the game and allowing them a chance to come back. This was likely his last start for the foreseeable future, as Jerad Eickhoff (back) is expected to reclaim his spot in the rotation on Tuesday. Leiter offers little fantasy value once he returns to the bullpen.
Jun 26 2017Leiter was confirmed as the starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. With Jerad Eickhoff (back) not quite ready to return to the rotation, Leiter will get another chance to start in his place. The 26-year-old impressed in his first spot start for the Phillies, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out five batters in six scoreless frames against a potent Diamondbacks offense. He'll look to keep it up against a hot-hitting Seattle offense that has scored the most runs in the majors this month.
Jun 23 2017Leiter (1-0) fired six shutout innings, allowed just three hits and a walk and struck out five batters in his first win Friday against the Diamondbacks.Leiter was unremarkable in his time in the Phillies bullpen (4.74 ERA, 12:14 K:BB), but he looked awfully sharp in his first start against one of the better lineups in the National League. He needed just 81 pitches to go the six innings and managed to keep the ball in the yard while inducing eight flyouts. Leiter managed a brilliant 27:4 K:BB in his three starts back at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, so it's possible that he's simply better suited to a starting role. Leiter will likely keep getting chance to prove that hypothesis until Jerad Eickhoff returns from injury.
Jun 23 2017Leiter was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will start Friday's game against the Diamondbacks, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports.Casey Fien (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list to make room for Leiter, who is set to make his first major-league start. The 26-year-old compiled a 4.74 ERA and 12:14 K:BB in 19 innings out of the Phillies' bullpen earlier in the season, and didn't fare much better with Lehigh Valley (4.74 ERA in 19 innings), so it could be a good day to stack Diamondbacks hitters against him in daily lineups.
May 31 2017Leiter got just two outs while surrendering five runs (four earned) on four hits and a pair of walks in Tuesday's loss to Miami.Starter Vince Velasquez departed early with an injury, so Leiter entered this game in the second inning. He utterly failed to give the Phillies the length they needed out of him, as he imploded in the third inning, failing to record an out against any of the six batters he faced in that frame. Leiter's current 5.40 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 11:11 K:BB certainly won't help him earn higher-leverage innings.
May 17 2017Leiter allowed two runs on one hit over two innings in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers. He struck out one and walked one.A Mike Napoli homer accounted for the two runs Leiter allowed. The 2013 22nd round pick was expected to head back to the minors in April, but injuries to Aaron Nola and Jeanmar Gomez have helped him stick around longer than expected. He has a 4.82 ERA and a 7:4 K:BB in 9.1 innings of relief this season.
