May 29 2025The Guardians transferred Lively (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing UCL reconstruction surgery, so his move to the 60-day IL will simply act as a way to free up 40-man space for Matt Krook, who was claimed off waivers from the A's on Thursday.
May 23 2025Lively will undergo season-ending surgery to reconstruct his right elbow UCL and repair his flexor tendon. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively and the Guardians made the decision to undergo the operation after receiving a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister in Texas earlier this week. The surgery is likely to sideline him at least 12-to-16 months, but more details on a timetable should be available after the procedure. Lively, 33, is set to reach arbitration eligibility for the first time this offseason.
May 13 2025The Guardians placed Lively on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right flexor strain, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was forced from Monday's start versus the Brewers with what was called right forearm inflammation at the time, but subsequent testing has revealed a more serious injury. It's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but it will undoubtedly be longer than a minimum stay on the IL. Kolby Allard threw three scoreless innings Monday after Lively exited and looks to be the most likely candidate to fill Livey's rotation spot in the short term.
May 12 2025Lively left Monday's start against the Brewers due to right forearm inflammation, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was forced to exit before the fourth inning of Monday's outing after experiencing discomfort when tossing his warmup pitches. The club will presumably monitor his status over the next few days and may elect to send him for further testing to determine whether a stint on the IL is necessary.
May 6 2025Lively (2-2) picked up the win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Guardians scored nine runs in each end of the twin bill, but after falling 10-9 in the matinee, Lively made sure the fireworks would be more than enough offense in the nightcap. The right-hander had his shutout bid ended in the sixth inning on a Riley Adams solo shot, and he left the mound after just 63 pitches (39 strikes). Lively will take a 3.46 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 28:13 K:BB through 41.2 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Brewers.
May 1 2025Lively did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Twins. He allowed five hits over 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been an up-and-down start to the year for Lively. He's now held opponents scoreless in three of his seven starts, though he's allowed 15 runs over 19.2 innings in his other four outings. Overall, the 33-year-old Lively sports a 3.72 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB across 36.1 innings. He's currently in line to face the Nationals on the road in his next outing.
Apr 19 2025Lively (1-2) earned the win against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out three across 5.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the second time in five starts that Lively didn't yield a run, and he was two outs shy from logging his first quality start of the year. While he has given up the eighth-most hits in the American League (25), his efforts Saturday lowered his ERA and WHIP to 3.86 and 1.25, respectively, across 25.2 innings. Lively will look to make it two wins in a row in his next start, tentatively slated for next weekend at home against the Red Sox.
Apr 13 2025Lively (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively turned in three scoreless frames before Salvador Perez knocked a two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Royals plated two more on Maikel Garcia's double in the fifth. Lively forced 12 swinging strikes on 93 total pitches in his longest start of the season. His ERA rose to 4.87 with a 16:7 K:BB through 20.1 innings. Lively is lined up to start in Pittsburgh next weekend.
Apr 9 2025Lively tossed five scoreless innings Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out four in the no-decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively worked around two walks in the first and another jam in the fourth to keep the Sox off the board. It was his second straight start issuing multiple walks, but he was able to keep the ball in the park after allowing a home run in both of his first two outings. With the Guardians playing five games over the next five days, Lively is set to take the bump again versus the Royals this weekend.
Apr 2 2025Lively (0-1) took the loss against the Padres on Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters in 4.1 frames. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively got off to a decent start Wednesday, striking out four of the first nine batters he faced. However, things took a turn for the worse in the third inning after four consecutive hits -- capped off by a Jackson Merrill homer -- gave San Diego a 4-0 lead that it would never relinquish. Lively is now up to a 6.75 ERA through his first two starts of the year but should have a decent chance to bounce back in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to come next week against the White Sox.
Mar 27 2025Lively did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 7-4 win over Kansas City, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was announced as Cleveland's Opening Day starter Thursday morning after Tanner Bibee (illness) was a late scratch. The 33-year-old Lively filled in admirably, with all of Kansas City's offense coming on Vinnie Pasquantino's three-run homer in the third. Lively figures to hold down a spot at the backend of Cleveland's rotation after going 13-10 with a 3.81 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 118 strikeouts last year.
Mar 17 2025Lively allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings in Sunday's spring start against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively breezed through two innings before giving up his first Cactus League home run in the third and more trouble in the fourth. The right-hander had three largely uneventful spring starts before tasting adversity in his fourth outing. He threw 74 pitches (50 strikes) and continues to build up in preparation for the regular season.
Mar 11 2025Lively scattered three hits and one walk while striking out three over four scoreless innings in Monday's Cactus League start against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively strengthened his case for a spot in the rotation during his third Cactus League start against a lineup with several Kansas City regulars. He's allowed just one run over nine spring innings. The right-hander won't blow away many hitters, but he doesn't hurt himself with walks. The key will be locating and preventing the long ball. He's penciled in as one of the five members of the rotation in the latest roster projection offered by Mandy Bell and Tim Stebbins of MLB.com.
Feb 24 2025Lively allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out one over two innings in Sunday's spring game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively made his first Cactus League start and allowed much base traffic but managed to stifle the damage to just one run. He threw 23 strikes among his 33 offerings, which was his goal coming in. "All good, just trying to locate everything, not letting it rip all the way," the pitcher told Steve Stockmar of MLB.com. "Felt good to be out there." Lively is coming off his best season in the majors, posting a 3.81 ERA over a career-high 151 regular-season innings. The accumulation of innings was the prominent reason he was left off the ALDS roster last year and limited to the one relief appearance in the ALCS. The right-hander's goal is to prove he has the stamina to be included in any postseason series.
Nov 22 2024Lively signed a one-year, $2.25 million deal with the Guardians to avoid arbitration Friday, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was an effective member of the Guardians' rotation in 2024, maintaining a 3.81 ERA with a 118:49 K:BB across 151 innings. He battled some inconsistency due to his contact-heavy approach, but he is a strong candidate to begin the season in the rotation.
Oct 15 2024The Guardians added Lively to their ALCS roster Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's taking the roster spot vacated by Alex Cobb, who is now out for the remainder of the postseason with a back injury. Lively hasn't made an appearance since his final start of the regular season back on Sept. 28, but he's a candidate to make a start during the ALCS in Cobb's place.
Oct 5 2024Lively is not included on the Guardians' roster for the American League Division Series versus Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was a key part of Cleveland's rotation during the regular season, posting a 3.81 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 118:49 K:BB over 151 innings across 29 starts while going 13-10. He had a few poor starts near the end of the campaign and logged a 4.53 ERA along with a 1.39 WHIP over the final two months, which may have played a part in the decision to leave him off roster for the ALDS. The starting pitchers on Cleveland's ALDS roster include Tanner Bibee, Gavin Williams, Matthew Boyd and Alex Cobb (finger).
Sep 28 2024Lively (13-10) took the loss Saturday against the Astros, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out four over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively didn't have his best stuff for his final regular season start as the four walks tied a season high. It's a tough ending for what has otherwise been a great season for the 32-year-old. Lively heads into the playoffs with a 3.81 ERA over 151 innings in his first season with the Guardians.
Sep 21 2024Lively (13-9) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over five innings in a 5-1 victory over the Cardinals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander looked like he was running out of gas in late August as he set a new career high in innings pitched, but Lively has found a second wind. Over his last three starts, he's given up just one run in 12 innings, and he's won back-to-back outings. On the season, Lively's posted a 3.80 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 114:45 K:BB through 147 innings. With the Guardians on the cusp of clinching the AL Central title, the team could shuffle its rotation ahead of the playoffs, but Lively currently lines up to make his final start of the regular season at home next weekend against the Astros.
Sep 15 2024Lively (12-9) allowed four hits and a walk over five-plus shutout innings Sunday, striking out two and earning a win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively worked around a small threat in the first inning but otherwise didn't face much resistance from the Rays' lineup. He gave up two straight singles to begin the sixth inning before Cade Smith came in to clean up the mess. Lively picked up his first win since Aug. 24 and lowered his season ERA to 3.87 through 142 innings. He had given up 10 runs over 10.1 innings in his previous three starts entering Sunday. Lively is projected to make his next start in St. Louis.
Sep 13 2024Lively (thigh) is listed as the starter for Sunday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He exited Tuesday's start against the White Sox after taking a comebacker off his right thigh in the second inning, but it was just a bruise and he'll make Sunday's start on normal rest. Prior to his early exit Tuesday, Lively had failed to log five innings in three of his previous five starts. He had a 6.20 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 16 strikeouts in 24.2 innings over that stretch.
Sep 10 2024Lively was removed from his start Tuesday versus the White Sox after getting hit in the leg by a pitch, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively needed to be helped off the field after taking a 96-mph line drive off his right thigh in the second inning, but he managed to escape the incident with nothing more than a bruise. The Guardians will likely keep an eye on him over the next few days, but there's a good chance the 32-year-old righty will make his next start -- tentatively scheduled to come against the Twins on Monday. Lively pitched two shutout innings while striking out two batters and walking none before his removal Tuesday.
Sep 4 2024Lively (11-9) took the loss against Kansas City on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively got through three scoreless innings before the Royals swarmed him for four runs on four hits -- including a Tommy Pham three-run homer -- in the fourth. The right-handed hurler didn't return for the fifth frame, marking his second straight outing in which he's failed to finish five innings. Over that span he's given up 10 runs across 8.1 frames to push his season ERA up from 3.62 to 4.07.
Aug 30 2024Lively did not factor into the decision in Friday's 10-8 win against Pittsburgh, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cleveland righty pitched fewer than five innings for just the fourth time this season, as he allowed a season-worst nine hits. All six Pittsburgh runs came in the fifth inning, as Lively yielded six hits -- including for three extra bases - on 27 pitches before being relieved by Pedro Avila. The 32-year-old has now pitched to a 3.92 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 105:42 K:BB across 131 innings this season. He is scheduled to make his next outing against the division-rival Royals on the road.
Aug 24 2024Lively (11-8) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out four over 6.2 innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively snapped a three-start winless stretch, riding an explosion of offense from the Guardians to his first win since Aug. 1. He's posted quality starts in three of his five outings this month, allowing 14 runs (13 earned) across 27.1 innings. Lively is now at a 3.62 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 102:41 K:BB through 126.2 innings over 23 starts this year, which has been his best in the majors. His next start is expected to come at home versus the Pirates.
Aug 18 2024Lively (10-8) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively delivered his second quality start of the month but was still stuck with the loss as Cleveland was shut out in the series finale in Milwaukee. He gave up a run in each of the first two innings before turning in four straight scoreless frames to end his day. Lively is 2-4 despite a solid 3.86 ERA over his last seven starts. For the year, he owns a 3.68 ERA with a 98:40 K:BB through 120 innings. Lively's next outing is projected to be at home against Texas.
Aug 12 2024Lively did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was touched up for a couple of homers and four walks for the second-consecutive start. While he never allowed the game to get out of hand, eventually paving the way for a comeback victory by the Guardians, he was pulled with two on and two out in the fourth and walked away with a no decision. It was the shortest outing of the season for Lively, who had made it into the fifth inning during each of his previous 20 starts. Despite the rough showing, the veteran righty is continuing to produce a career season, posting a 3.71 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 93 strikeouts over 114 innings. His next opportunity to toe the rubber is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee when the Guardians travel to take on the Brewers.
Aug 7 2024Lively (10-7) took the loss Wednesday against the Diamondbacks in the opening game of a doubleheader, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively struggled with command and control a bit Wednesday, issuing a season-high four walks. The Diamondbacks would ultimately make him pay with a pair of two-run homers in an eventual 7-3 Cleveland defeat. It's the first time in five starts that Lively's allowed more than two runs -- he'd posted a 2.78 ERA in his last four outings (22.2 innings) prior to Wednesday. Overall, the 32-year-old right-hander still sports a 3.59 ERA on the campaign with a 1.17 WHIP and 92:34 K:BB across 110.1 innings. Lively will look to rebound in his next outing, currently slated for early next week at home against the Cubs.
Aug 6 2024Lively and the Guardians won't face Arizona on Tuesday, as the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday to make up for Tuesday's game, and Lively will presumably get the starting nod in one of the two contests. In three starts since the All-Star break, the 32-year-old righty owns a 2.60 ERA and 1.04 WHIP alongside a 12:5 K:BB through 17.1 innings.
Aug 1 2024Lively (10-6) earned the win over Baltimore on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six innnings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively gave up a run in the first frame, but Cleveland's offense put up five runs by the end of third to take a comfortable lead. The right-hander surrendered another run on a fourth-inning Anthony Santander homer, and that was all the Orioles offense managed against him. Lively notched his second straight quality start and has now given up two or fewer runs in four consecutive outings. He's in the midst of a breakout campaign with 10 victories along with a 3.42 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 90:30 K:BB over 105.2 innings.
Jul 26 2024Lively (9-6) picked up the win Friday against the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was fantastic Friday, only giving up a solo home run to Bryson Stott en route to the win after back-to-back losses. Lively continues his remarkably consistent season, as he's gone at least five innings and allowed three runs or fewer in 16 of his 18 starts thus far in his breakout campaign. The 32-year-old will carry a 3.44 ERA into his next start, currently scheduled vs the Orioles.
Jul 21 2024Lively (8-6) took the loss against the Padres on Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively gave up a two-out double to Kyle Higashioka that plated two runs in the second inning, but outside of that, he pitched well and stayed out of trouble in Sunday's loss. It was his seventh straight start in which he gave up multiple runs, but he's also pitched into the sixth inning in six straight starts. The 32-year-old remains a steady piece of the Guardians rotation with a 3.57 ERA through 93.1 innings this season.
Jul 14 2024Lively (8-5) yielded two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively turned in a strong performance aside from serving up solo homers to Jose Siri and Brandon Lowe. The Rays threw a combined shutout and stuck Lively with the tough-luck loss. His seven punchouts matched a season best and he's now hit that mark four times in 2024. Lively will begin the second half with a strong 3.58 ERA and 78:25 K:BB through 16 starts. In eight outings since the start of June, he's registered a 4.40 ERA.
Jul 9 2024Lively didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 9-8 win over the Tigers, giving up six runs on seven hits, a walk and four strikeouts over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was given a healthy 6-0 lead on Tuesday but allowed a season-high six runs of his own. The 32-year-old has now given up multiple runs in five straight starts and has seen his ERA go from 2.59 to 3.59 over his last 27 innings. The no-decision snapped a streak of 11 straight appearances in which he factored in the decision, as he's accumulated a solid 8-4 record in 15 starts this season. Lively is scheduled for one more start prior to the All-Star break, Sunday against the Rays.
Jul 4 2024Lively (8-4) picked up the win Thursday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively nabbed his second consecutive quality start - his fifth of 2024 - and generated his most punchouts since May 20. The 32-year-old was tagged by Paul DeJong for a two-run homer in the sixth inning but was otherwise excellent. Through 77.1 innings, Lively owns a 3.14 ERA and a 67:22 K:BB. He's on pace to make his next start against the Tigers in Detroit.
Jun 28 2024Lively (7-4) took the loss against the Royals on Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over six innings while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was sharp for most of the contest and didn't allow a runner to reach second base until the fifth inning, when Nick Loftin walked and then advanced on a steal. Unfortunately for Lively, his luck would run out in the following frame after he surrendered back-to-back triples, eventually leading to two runs coming home for Kansas City. The outing marked Lively's first quality start this month, but he's allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven outings. He's also lost two of his last three starts after previously winning five straight.
Jun 22 2024Lively (7-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.2 innings to earn the win over the Blue Jays on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively bounced back from his shortest start of the year by getting back into the win column. He hasn't struck out more than five batters over his last five outings, but he's generally been good at limiting damage, as he's given up two or fewer runs in nine of his 12 starts. The right-hander is at a 3.03 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 56:20 K:BB through 65.1 innings this season, though he's also been tagged for 10 home runs, including two in Saturday's start. Lively is projected to make his next appearance at Kansas City.
Jun 16 2024Lively (6-3) took the loss Sunday against Toronto, yielding four earned runs on six hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively pitched for the first time in eight days after leaving his most recent start with tightness after 65 pitches. He surrendered a two-run home run to Ernie Clement in the second inning, his first home run allowed since May 26. The four earned runs are a season worst for the 32-year-old, who had notched wins in each of his previous five starts. Despite Sunday's rough outing, Lively has pitched well for Cleveland this season, logging a 3.02 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and a 52:18 K:BB across 59.2 innings pitched. He is currently scheduled for a rematch against Toronto next weekend.
Jun 12 2024Lively (undisclosed) is listed as the Guardians' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively experienced some unspecified tightness during his most recent start in Miami on Saturday, when he tossed five shutout innings prior to being lifted. The issue won't result in Lively's turn being skipped, but he'll be pushed back in the schedule and given a full week off before stepping back into the rotation. After joining the Guardians this offseason on a modest one-year, $750,000 contract, Lively has been a valuable piece of the Cleveland rotation in 2024, going 6-2 with a 2.59 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 55.2 innings across 10 starts.
Jun 11 2024Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Tuesday that Lively (undisclosed) has checked out fine and is expected to make his next turn through the rotation, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old experienced some unspecified tightness during his start in Miami over the weekend, which resulted in him being lifted after five scoreless innings. Lively hasn't had any issues over the past couple days, putting him on track to start this weekend in Toronto. Cleveland should confirm its pitching plans later in the week.
Jun 10 2024Lively returned to Cleveland on Monday to undergo further medical exams for an undisclosed injury, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury presumably stems from Lively's most recent start in Miami on Saturday, when he was lifted from the game after throwing 65 pitches over five shutout innings. Per the Associated Press, manager Stephen Vogt said that Lively experienced some tightness after sitting for an extended period in the top of the fifth inning, when the Guardians erupted for six runs. Vogt didn't expound any further beyond that, but the fact that Lively temporarily left the Guardians to get examined more closely suggests that his early exit wasn't merely precautionary. The Guardians have off days Monday and Thursday and can get by with a shortened rotation for a bit if they choose, so Lively may not be in line to pitch during this weekend's series in Toronto even if he doesn't require a stay on the injured list. Lively has been a pleasant surprise for the Guardians and fantasy managers alike, as he's won each of his last five starts while ringing up a 2.54 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 28.1 innings.
Jun 8 2024Lively (6-2) allowed three hits and struck out one without walking a batter over five shutout innings to earn the win over the Marlins on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively might have had more in the tank -- he threw just 65 pitches (43 strikes) in a sharp but somewhat short outing. It was enough for his fifth straight win, and he's allowed just eight runs with a 22:6 K:BB over 28.1 innings in that span. Lively isn't dominating by most measures, as his 20.2 percent whiff rate is in the 15th percentile in the majors, per Statcast. He also averages just 90 mph between his four-seam fastball and sinker, which combine for roughly 60 percent of his pitches. Despite the poor under-the-hood metrics, he's pitched to a 2.59 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB over 55.2 innings through 10 starts this season. Lively's next start is projected to be at Toronto.
Jun 1 2024Lively (5-2) earned the win against the Nationals on Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively fired three scoreless frames before allowing two runs in the fourth inning and left the game just shy of a quality start after allowing a two-out single to Lane Thomas in the sixth. This was Lively's fourth win in as many games, and he has not allowed more than three runs in any of his nine starts this season. Lively will take a 2.84 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB into a road matchup against the Marlins next weekend.
May 27 2024Lively (4-2) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively looked terrific with the exception of Matt Thaiss' two-run shot in the fifth inning. It was Lively's first quality start since May 4 but he's now won three straight starts. He's allowed three or fewer runs in each of his eight starts this year, resulting in an impressive 2.80 ERA through 45 innings. Lively's next start is expected to be at home against the Nationals, where he'll look to extend his winning streak to four.
May 20 2024Lively (3-2) earned the win over the Mets on Monday, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only run Lively allowed in the outing came via a Thomas Nido solo homer in the third inning. Lively was otherwise excellent, matching a season high with seven punchouts and falling one out shy of recording a quality start. The right-hander is in the midst of the best season of his career, posting a 2.84 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 38:12 K:BB over 38 innings. Prior to this season Lively owned a 5.05 ERA across 208.2 career frames.
May 15 2024Lively (2-2) recorded the win Tuesday against Texas, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks during five innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively fell victim to the warm Texas weather and the open roof at Globe Life Field, giving up solo home runs to Adolis Garcia, Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe. The long balls were Lively's first given up since his second start of the campaign. Lively is on pace for a career year, owning a 2.63 ERA and a 26:9 K:BB through 27.1 innings this season. He's tentatively scheduled to start Monday against the Mets.
May 9 2024Lively (1-2) took the loss against the White Sox on Thursday, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It appeared Lively could be in for a short outing after giving up three runs on five hits (including three doubles) and a walk over his first two frames, but the right-hander recovered to go 5.2 innings without giving up another run. The three runs were a season high, which speaks to how well Lively has pitched through five appearances on the season. He holds a 2.63 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB across 27.1 innings.
May 4 2024Lively (1-1) earned the win over the Angels on Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively got through four scoreless frames before the Angels posted a run in the fifth, but that was all the scoring the right-hander ended up allowing. The soon-to-be 32-year-old has yielded exactly one run in each of his past three starts, and he's given up a total of five earned runs across 21.2 innings on the season for a sterling ERA of 2.08. It's a bit difficult to imagine Lively continuing this level of success given that he entered the campaign with a 5.05 ERA across 208.2 career innings as a major-leaguer, and his Statcast numbers show that despite his strong start to the season, he has given up plenty of hard contact while rarely getting batters to chase. However, it's also worth noting that his strikeout numbers have tangibly risen -- Lively had a career 6.9 K/9 prior to this season but is at a 10.0 K/9 through four starts this year.
Apr 28 2024Lively didn't factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks against Atlanta. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively has yet to allow more than two runs in a start this season. However, he's gone deeper than five innings in only one of his three appearances. He was pulled at 88 pitches (53 strikes) Sunday and didn't give up a home run for the first time all year. In 15.2 innings, Lively owns a 2.30 ERA with a 10.9 K/9, a massive improvement from his 5.38 ERA and 8.0 K/9 from 2023. He's projected for a start against the Angels on Saturday.
Apr 23 2024Lively did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Red Sox, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven over 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively held Boston off the board until Wilyer Abreu's solo home run in the seventh inning, though Cleveland couldn't break through against Tanner Houck until the bottom half of the frame, leaving Lively with a no-decision. The 32-year-old right-hander's pitched well in his first two starts this year, both coming against the Red Sox. Lively's allowed three runs through 11.1 innings while posting an impressive 14:1 K:BB. He should get at least one more start before Gavin Williams (elbow) is able to rejoin the rotation -- Lively's currently slated for a tough road matchup in Atlanta on Sunday.
Apr 21 2024Lively is scheduled to start Tuesday's series opener with the Red Sox at Progressive Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively will be making his second turn through the Guardians rotation after he was effective in his MLB debut this past Wednesday in his return from a stint on the 15-day injured list while he recovered from a viral illness. While facing off against the same Boston team he'll face this week at Fenway Park, Lively struck out seven and gave up two earned runs on three hits and one walk over five innings, though he took the loss after being on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel with Tanner Houck. Lively should have a spot in the Cleveland rotation until Gavin Williams (elbow) is ready to return from the 15-day IL, likely in the first or second week of May. Williams made a start at extended spring training Saturday and should head out on a rehab assignment this week, though he'll likely need at least two starts in the minors before being activated from the IL.
Apr 17 2024Lively (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over five innings against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Lively was excellent in his first start of the campaign, he wasn't as good as Tanner Houck -- who pitched a complete-game shutout -- and was stuck with the loss. Lively ran into a bit of trouble in the third and fourth innings, bringing in Pablo Reyes on a balk in the third before surrendering a solo homer to Connor Wong in the fourth. With Gavin Williams (elbow) set to miss at least one more trip around the rotation, Lively should receive some opportunities to build on Wednesday's performance. His first chance to do so is set to come Tuesday in a rematch with the Red Sox.
Apr 14 2024The Guardians plan to reinstate Lively (illness) from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game in Boston, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The season-ending injury to Shane Bieber (elbow), along with a doubleheader with the Yankees on Saturday, opened up two spots in Cleveland's temporary six-man rotation, and Xzavion Curry (illness) -- who will be activated from the IL to start Monday -- and Lively will be called upon to fill the voids. The Guardians are expected to condense their rotation to five men by the end of the week, however, so how Curry and Lively perform against the Red Sox will likely determine which of the two remains in a starting role moving forward. Lively wrapped up his two-start rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus by covering 5.1 innings and 55 pitches this past Tuesday, so he should face only light workload restrictions in Boston for what will be his season debut with the big club.
Apr 13 2024Lively (illness) struck out one while allowing three earned runs on four hits and no walks over 5.1 innings in his second rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After battling a viral illness in spring training that cost him about two weeks of action, Lively opened the season on the 15-day injured list. He might be fully built up by this point, however, as he reached the sixth inning of Tuesday's rehab outing and tossed 55 pitches in the start. Though Lively appeared likely to serve as organizational starting depth in 2024, he could have a clear path to a rotation spot in the short term while Shane Bieber (elbow) and Gavin Williams (elbow) are on the shelf. Bieber is lost for the season, but Williams is expected back in late April or early May.
Apr 5 2024Lively (illness) allowed a hit and struck out three without walking a batter over three scoreless innings in his rehab start versus Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively began the season on the 15-day injured list, but he was solid in his first rehab appearance. The right-hander was in contention for a rotation spot during spring training prior to coming down with a respiratory virus. It's unclear what his role will be with the major-league team once he's activated -- that will likely depend on Carlos Carrasco's performance as the Guardians' fifth starter and the timeline for the return of Gavin Williams (elbow).
Mar 29 2024The Guardians placed Lively on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a viral illness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively and Xzavion Curry are opening the season on the shelf due to a respiratory virus that made its way around the Cleveland clubhouse during spring training, according to MLB.com. Lively shouldn't need much longer than the minimum 15 days to regain his conditioning and get ramped back up, and he'll likely be ticketed for a long-relief role once available. He could become a rotation option down the road if Carlos Carrasco or Logan Allen struggle.
Mar 12 2024Lively has allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings across two Cactus League appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively signed a major-league contract with the Guardians in December, but his role is still up in the air. He's started one of his two appearances this spring, but the results aren't there to justify a spot in the rotation. Carlos Carrasco, who is in camp on a non-roster invitee deal, has pitched to a 3.38 ERA over eight innings this spring and may have the inside track for a starting job if Gavin Williams continues to be bothered by elbow discomfort. Lively could end up as a long reliever or lose his place on the 40-man roster if the Guardians can't find a spot for him.
Dec 12 2023Lively signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Guardians on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old right-hander receives a major-league deal from Cleveland after collecting a 5.38 ERA and 79:25 K:BB over 88.2 innings with the Reds in 2023. Currently, there wouldn't appear to be room for Lively in the Guardians' rotation. However, it's possible a spot could open up if the club winds up trading Shane Bieber or someone else. More likely, perhaps, is that Lively operates as a long reliever or swingman.
Nov 7 2023Lively elected to become a free agent Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was removed from the Reds' 40-man roster last month after struggling to a 5.38 ERA over 88.2 innings (12 starts, seven relief appearances) during the 2023 campaign. The 31-year-old right-hander may have to settle for a minor-league contract on the open market this winter.
Oct 18 2023Cincinnati outrighted Lively to Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively passed through waivers unclaimed after being removed from the Reds' 40-man roster. The 31-year-old right-hander made it back to the majors this season for the first time since 2019 but posted a rough 5.38 ERA in 12 starts and seven relief appearances covering 88.2 innings.
Sep 20 2023Lively allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four over four relief innings in Tuesday's 7-0 loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The plan Tuesday was not to need Lively for that many innings or at all, per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Reds manager David Bell scripted a bullpen game and had the ability for relievers to cover the entire game instead of turning to Lively. The manager had four relievers open the game, but the plan went awry when Cincinnati fell behind early and had a lifeless offense. Bell said he plans to manage the final two weeks as if it were the playoffs, which could mean shorter outings for starters and multiple relievers.
Sep 19 2023Lively is expected to work as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Fernando Cruz in Tuesday's game against the Twins, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being activated from the COVID-19-related injured list last Thursday, Lively looks poised to make his second consecutive appearance as a bulk reliever. While working behind Derek Law in an 8-2 loss to the Tigers in his return to action, Lively took a no-decision after giving up three earned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings. Cruz is expected to work just an inning or two Tuesday before turning the game over to Lively, who is the Reds pitcher most likely to factor into the decision. Looking ahead, Lively could end up sticking as a pure reliever, as the Reds have three remaining off days that would allow the team to get by with a four-man rotation the rest of the way. After tossing seven innings of two-run ball in Monday's 7-3 win, Connor Phillips could be poised to remain in the rotation as the No. 4 pitcher rather than Lively.
Sep 15 2023Lively allowed three runs on four hits over 4.1 innings against the Tigers on Thursday. He struck out four and did not issue any walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively went 1-2-3 through the Tigers' lineup after relieving Sam Moll to open the third inning, but immediately ran into trouble in the fourth, yielding three consecutive hits, including a two-run home run to Akil Baddoo. The right-hander hit another snag in the seventh, surrendering a leadoff single while also allowing a batter to reach due to a throwing error. It wasn't a great outing for Lively in his return from the Covid-19-related injured list and he's now allowed at least three runs in each of his last three appearances, dating back to Aug. 1. He's also given up at least one home run in six consecutive outings.
Sep 14 2023Lively (illness) was activated from the COVID-19-related injured list Thursday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Wittenmyer, Lively is slated for bulk-relief duty Thursday in Detroit once opening pitcher Derek Law exits the contest, likely after one or two innings. Before landing on the COVID-19-related IL, Lively hadn't pitched since Aug. 26, when he covered 5.2 innings. Lively didn't go out on a minor-league rehab assignment while he was on the IL, so deploying him behind an opener will allow the Reds to better manage his workload in his return to the active roster.
Sep 1 2023The Reds placed Lively on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was originally scheduled to start the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs, but he'll now be forced to miss at least one week. Lyon Richardson will come up from Triple-A Louisville and replace Lively as Friday's starter.
Aug 26 2023Lively (pectoral) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five without walking a batter over 5.2 innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively missed just over three weeks with a pectoral strain. The right-hander was the Reds' third pitcher of the contest, and he held his own with a solid outing, aside from a three-run home run by Ketel Marte in the fifth inning. Lively has gone seven appearances without a win, but he had just one truly awful outing in that span. He's at a 5.17 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 69:19 K:BB through 76.2 innings over 15 appearances (12 starts) this season. Lively is projected to make his next appearance at home against the Cubs.
Aug 25 2023Lively (pectoral) could be activated from the 15-day injured list Saturday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively has rejoined the Reds in Arizona rather than making another rehab start. He could start Saturday's game, or a piggyback situation with Brett Kennedy also seems to be on the table. Lively has been out since early August with a right pectoral strain.
Aug 19 2023Lively (pectoral) allowed four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings for Triple-A Louisville on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively allowed a pair of home runs, but the pitch count (76) and innings were most important. He had been scheduled to throw 85 pitches in his first rehab start Sunday but only tossed 32 (19 strikes) after allowing six runs in two-thirds of an inning. This could be Lively's final rehab outing, per MLB.com, but Cincinnati manager David Bell wants to see how the right-hander feels Saturday before making any decision.
Aug 16 2023Lively (pectoral) is scheduled to make a second rehab start Friday for Triple-A Louisville, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was expected to throw 85 pitches during his first rehab start Sunday but lasted just 32 pitches, allowing six runs in two-thirds of an inning. This is Lively's second stint on the injured list due to a pectoral strain.
Aug 14 2023Lively (pectoral) allowed six runs on six hits and one walk over two-thirds of an inning in a rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively began a rehab assignment and was pulled after just 32 pitches. The right-hander had been scheduled to throw 85 pitches, per Annie Sabo of Bally Sports Cincinnati. Prior to the start, there was talk of Lively coming back to the Reds following Sunday's outing, but the short pitch count (and results) likely extends his time away from the majors.
Aug 13 2023Lively (pectoral) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday to begin a rehab assignment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively is eligible to return rom the 15-day injured list Aug. 17, but the Reds are off that day, so the first game he could start would be Aug. 18 against Toronto. If Lively pitches in Sunday's game for Louisville, that would line him up to return Aug. 18 for a start on normal rest. Lively gave up 13 earned runs in his most recent start before going on the IL, and he had a 3.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 25 innings in the five starts prior to that blowup outing.
Aug 9 2023Reds manager David Bell said Wednesday that Lively (pectoral) could be ready for activation when first eligible on Aug. 17, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively landed on the 15-day injured list a week ago with a right pectoral strain after he was demolished for 13 earned runs over four innings in an ugly loss to the Cubs. It sounds like the injury is relatively minor, though it remains unclear whether he will be asked to make a rehab start before rejoining Cincinnati's active roster.
Aug 2 2023The Reds placed Lively on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right pectoral strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively's pectoral injury could help explain why he allowed 13 earned runs over four innings during Tuesday's blowout loss to the Cubs. The 31-year-old righty will now be sidelined for the next two weeks, meanwhile Daniel Duarte will come up from Triple-A Louisvile to fill Lively's roster spot.
Aug 1 2023Lively (4-7) took the loss Tuesday, allowing 13 runs on 13 hits and two walks over four innings in a 20-9 loss to the Cubs. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was roughed up early, allowing five runs before recording an out. The onslaught continued from there, as he gave up multiple runs in each of his four innings. The 31-year-old had been pitching well prior to this start, allowing three earned runs or less in each of his previous six outings. However, allowing 13 earned runs in this game caused Lively's season-long ERA to jump from 3.76 to 5.51. Lively will look to bounce back in his next start, which is tentatively lined up for this weekend against the Nationals.
Jul 26 2023Lively (4-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on eight hits over 6.2 innings against the Brewers. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively held Milwaukee off the board for six innings until Tyrone Taylor snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh with a two-run homer, sticking the right-hander with the loss. The 31-year-old Lively has been solid of late, pitching to a 3.23 ERA over his last six outings (30.2 innings) despite earning just one win in that span. His ERA is down to 3.76 with a 1.21 WHIP and 62:17 K:BB across 11 starts (67 innings) this season. Lively's next start is tentatively lined up for next week against the Cubs.
Jul 22 2023Lively didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 9-6 win over the Diamondbacks, giving up three runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The journeyman right-hander came up one out short of collecting his fifth win of the season, getting the hook after 76 pitches (49 strikes) following a two-out RBI triple by Ketel Marte that shrunk Cincinnati's lead to one run. Lively hasn't thrown more than 80 pitches in any of his last four starts as manager David Bell has him on a short leash -- while he has a solid 3.44 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 18.1 innings over that stretch, he's completed five innings only once and has zero wins, putting a firm cap on his fantasy utility. Lively is next set to take the mound on the road next week in Milwaukee.
Jul 16 2023Lively left Sunday's game against the Brewers after four innings with cramping, but he said he expects to make his next start, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was effective on the mound Sunday, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three over four innings. Reds manager David Bell suggested afterward that the heat got to Lively, who was forced off the mound after 57 pitches. It doesn't sound like he's is in any real danger of missing his start next, but fantasy managers should still proceed with caution given Lively's underwhelming supporting metrics.
Jul 9 2023Lively (4-5) allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings but took the loss Sunday versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively put in an excellent performance in his return from a pectoral strain. He threw 52 of 75 pitches for strikes and did well outside of surrendering the only run of the game in the first inning. The 31-year-old right-hander concludes the first half with a 3.83 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB through 10 appearances (eight starts) spanning 51.2 innings. The Reds will have an extended homestand following the All-Star break, which means Lively's first start of the second half is most likely to be against the Brewers or Giants.
Jul 8 2023Lively (pectoral) will be activated from the injured list and start Sunday's game against the Brewers, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively has been sidelined since June 24, and he'll return to the mound without a rehab assignment. It's unclear how deep he may be able to work into the game as a result, though it has been only 17 days since he last took the mound.
Jul 6 2023Lively (pectoral) appears lined up to return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday against the Brewers, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Brett Kennedy was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday after starting Tuesday versus the Nationals, so the Reds have an open rotation spot. Lively will apparently be allowed to skip a minor-league rehab assignment as he makes a swift return from the right pectoral strain that sent him to the injured list June 24.
Jun 30 2023Lively (pectoral) could return from the injured list and make a start before the All-Star break, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively landed on the injured list Saturday (retroactive to June 21) with a right pectoral strain, though he doesn't appear to be facing an extended stay. Lively holds a 4.11 ERA and 1.26 WHIP through 46 innings this season and is eligible to return July 6 -- four days before the All-Star break.
Jun 24 2023The Reds placed Lively on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right pectoral strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively had already been scratched from his next scheduled start Sunday versus Atlanta with what was initially described as pec soreness. Now, the 31-year-old righty will officially miss multiple turns through the rotation. The Reds didn't announce a corresponding move, so it remains to be seen who will start in Lively's place Sunday.
Jun 21 2023Lively allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four in four innings Tuesday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively needed 80 pitches to get through four innings and only tossed 45 strikes in the effort. Tuesday was his shortest start since entering the rotation and his four walks were a season high. He allowed home runs in the first and fourth innings, which marks the fourth time in seven starts he's let up multiple long balls. Lively has still maintained respectable numbers overall, registering a 4.11 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 45:13 K:BB in 46 innings so far. He'll look to get back in the win column versus the Orioles next week.
Jun 15 2023Lively (4-4) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings in a 7-4 victory over Kansas City. He struck out four and didn't record a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively had surrendered five home runs and 12 total runs over his past two starts, so Wednesday's bounce-back outing was certainly a step in the right direction. He's made eight appearances this year (six starts) and holds a 4.07 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. The right-hander's 41:9 K:BB through 42 innings stands out, so if he can avoid giving up the long ball, Lively could have solid fantasy value moving forward, especially while Graham Ashcraft (calf) and Nick Lodolo (lower leg) are on the injured list.
Jun 9 2023Lively (3-4) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and a walk over 6.2 innings Friday, striking out eight and taking a loss against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively coughed up three two-run shots in the ugly outing. After allowing just five runs through 22.2 frames to begin the season, he's been tagged with 12 runs in his last two starts. His ERA has spiked to 4.21, though he has a solid 37:9 K:BB through 36.1 innings. Lively is expected to take the mound in Kansas City next week.
Jun 4 2023Lively (3-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over seven innings against Milwaukee. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively got off to a rough start Sunday, allowing a three-run homer to Andruw Monasterio in the first inning. However, the 31-year-old right-hander settled down and held Milwaukee to two runs over his next six innings. Lively had been pitching well coming into Sunday's outing -- he hadn't allowed more than two runs in any of his previous three starts. He now sports a solid 3.03 ERA with a 1.01 and 29:8 K:BB through 29.2 innings this season.
May 31 2023Lively (3-2) picked up the win in Tuesday's 9-8 victory over the Red Sox, allowing four hits and two walks over 5.2 scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He got the hook one out short of his second straight quality start, and the Reds bullpen nearly cost him his second straight win, but Lively was outstanding when he was on the mound and generated 26 called or swinging strikes among his 87 pitches. Over his last three outings, the 31-year-old has a 2.08 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 22:5 K:BB through 17.1 innings. Lively will look to keep rolling in his next start, likely to come at home this weekend against the Brewers.
May 22 2023Lively is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Cardinals at Great American Ball Park. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively will make his second straight turn through the rotation after he excelled this past Friday in his first MLB start since 2018. In the Reds' 6-2 loss to the Yankees, Lively struck out eight over 5.2 innings while allowing just two runs on two hits and one walk. He stretched out to 85 pitches in that outing, so he should face few restrictions with his workload -- if any -- when he makes his second straight turn through the Cincinnati rotation.
May 20 2023Lively (1-2) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over 5.2 innings in a 6-2 loss to the Yankees. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively's first two appearances in the big leagues were as a bulk reliever, but he drew his first MLB start against New York. Despite taking the loss, it was a valiant effort for the right-hander, who retired 16 straight batters at one point. He struck out the first two hitters in the sixth but was pulled with 85 pitches (50 strikes) after issuing a two-out walk to Aaron Judge. With Nick Lodolo (lower leg) likely out for awhile, Lively figures to remain in the rotation as long as he continues to pitch like he did Friday.
May 17 2023Lively is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Yankees at Great American Ball Park, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After receiving a call-up from Triple-A Louisville last week, Lively ended up making his 2023 big-league debut as a bulk reliever behind opener Derek Law. He ultimately picked up a win May 11 against the Mets while working three scoreless innings behind Law that day, but Lively took the loss in Monday's series opener in Colorado after covering 2.1 innings in a traditional relief role. Given that he'll be returning to the hill Friday on three days' rest, Lively could be on somewhat of a limited pitch count in the start.
May 11 2023Lively (1-0) was credited with the win against the Mets on Thursday, allowing four hits and striking out one batter over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Derek Law drew the start for the Reds and went 1.1 frames. Cincinnati put up four runs in the bottom of the first, and Lively was credited with the victory as a result of following Law and keeping New York off the scoreboard over his three innings. This was Lively's first major-league win since 2017 and his first big-league appearance since 2019. The right-hander looks to be in line to fill the void left when Luis Cessa was designated for assignment Tuesday, though it's not yet clear if Lively will be working entirely as a bulk reliever or if he may see traditional starts.
May 10 2023Reds manager David Bell said Lively will handle a "significant amount" of innings in Thursday's series finale against the Mets, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively might not get a traditional start, but he'll at least serve as the bulk reliever. The 31-year-old right-hander was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday after the Reds designated Luis Cessa for assignment and looks to be set up for an extended run in a sort of rotation or swingman role. Lively had posted a 2.33 ERA across 27 innings this season at Triple-A, though there isn't much swing-and-miss in his arsenal.
May 9 2023Lively has his contract selected from Triple-A Louisville by the Reds on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively will join the big-league roster after being assigned to the minors in early March. The right-hander has produced an impressive 2.33 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 27 innings in five appearances, including four starts, with Louisville in 2023. With Luis Cessa being designated for assignment Tuesday, Lively could step right in Cincinnati's starting rotation.
Mar 29 2022Lively was reassigned to minor-league camp Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lively was merely in camp as a non-roster invitee but reportedly had a chance to win at least a temporary rotation spot, with both Luis Castillo and Mike Minor expected to miss the start of the season with shoulder injuries. He's no longer in the competition, which isn't too much of a surprise given that he spent the last three seasons producing a merely decent 4.14 ERA in the KBO.
Mar 28 2022Lively has a chance to win a spot in the Reds rotation, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Because Lively came back from the KBO and wasn't on the Reds 40-man roster, he reported to camp in February and is ahead of other competitors for the spot. He began his professional career in the Reds' organization before having stops in Philadelphia, Kansas City and Arizona.

Jul 16 2018Lively is likely out for the year with a shoulder injury, The Morning Call reports.Lively opened the year in the Phillies' rotation but struggled to a 6.85 ERA in five starts. Solid showings by Vince Velasquez and Nick Pivetta and the emergence of Zach Eflin and Enyel De Los Santos have pushed Lively down the pecking order, giving him a tough road back to the roster even if healthy. He'll compete for a roster spot again next spring but is unlikely to be a favorite to make the team.
Apr 27 2018Lively has been poor to start the season but faces no immediate threats to his rotation spot, The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Lively's poor start against the Diamondbacks on Thursday brought his ERA up to 6.85 on the season, while his WHIP stands at 1.86. Still, he's likely to hold onto the fifth starter role until Jerad Eickhoff returns from his lat strain in late May because the Phillies simply don't have a great option to replace him. Four of their five Triple-A starters have ERAs north of 4, while the only one that doesn't (Enyel De Los Santos) is just 22 with only three Triple-A starts under his belt. The team could turn to long reliever Drew Hutchison, who has 74 career big-league starts to his name, but he's an uninspiring option with a career 4.89 ERA over parts of five major-league seasons.
Apr 27 2018Lively was placed on the disabled list with a lower-back strain Friday.Lively was lit up for seven runs in 2.1 innings against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, and it seems as though his back may have been to blame. He'll miss at least one turn in the rotation. Jake Thompson was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place on the roster.
Apr 27 2018Lively has pitched poorly to start the season but faces no immediate threats to his rotation spot, The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Lively's poor start against the Diamondbacks on Thursday brought his ERA up to 6.85 on the season, while his WHIP stands at 1.86. Still, he's likely to hold onto the fifth starter role until Jerad Eickhoff returns from his lat strain in late May because the Phillies simply don't have a great option to replace him. Four of their five Triple-A starters have ERAs north of 4.00, while the only one that doesn't (Enyel De Los Santos) is just 22 with only three Triple-A starts under his belt. The team could turn to long reliever Drew Hutchison, who has 74 career big-league starts to his name, but he's an uninspiring option with a career 4.89 ERA over parts of five major-league seasons.
Apr 26 2018Lively (0-2) allowed seven earned runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out one across 2.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Diamondbacks.Lively never got on track in this start, allowing five baserunners and three runs in the first inning. He has put together a couple solid starts this season, offering some hope that he can build off his promising rookie campaign. However, he has now allowed five or more earned runs in two of his five starts, making him difficult to rely on.
Apr 20 2018Lively (0-1) didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 win over the Pirates, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over six innings while striking out four. The right-hander put together his first quality start of the season -- in fact, it was the first time this season Lively's even completed six innings. His 21:6 K:BB in 21.1 innings on the season is impressive, but his 4.64 ERA and 1.55 WHIP are lagging behind. Lively will try to bring his ratios down further in Thursday's home start against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 15 2018Lively allowed three runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts across four innings Sunday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.Lively allowed a leadoff home run to Denard Span before another pair of hits brought a second run around in the first inning. He settled down until the fourth, when the hosts scratched another run across before he closed it out. He seemingly could've continued, leaving after just 66 pitches, and would have earned his first victory of the season if he would've been given a longer leash. Lively's ERA now sits at an unsightly 5.87 this season and his next start is scheduled for Friday against an in-form Pirates lineup.
Apr 10 2018Lively allowed fun runs on nine hits -- including a homer -- and two walks while striking out seven in 5.2 innings against the Reds on Monday. He did not factor into the decision. While the right-hander has been missing more bats early on this season -- he has 12 strikeouts in 11.1 innings after posting a 5.3 K/9 last year -- it hasn't made a difference with the results so far. Lively has a 5.56 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and .319 BAA through two starts. Even against a Rays team that currently ranks tied for 12th in the AL in runs scored (in Tampa Bay), Lively will be a tough player to justify starting on Sunday.
Apr 4 2018Lively (0-1) allowed two runs on six hits and one walk across 5.2 innings while taking the loss Tuesday against the Mets. He struck out five.Lively was quite effective through the early stages of his season debut, tossing five consecutive scoreless innings to begin the game. He ran into trouble in the sixth, however, when he allowed a pair of runs on a hit batsman and a pair of RBI knocks before he was removed from the game. Unfortunately, the Philadelphia lineup couldn't solve Matt Harvey on the other side, resulting in a tough-luck loss for Lively. He pitched well regardless and will face another favorable matchup next time out against the Marlins.
Apr 2 2018Lively won't make his scheduled start Monday against the Phillies after the game was postponed due to inclement weather.he two teams will make up the game July 9 as part of a doubleheader. It's unclear if the Phillies will push Lively's scheduled start back to Tuesday or choose to skip him altogether and give Aaron Nola the ball. Given Nola threw just 68 pitches in his season debut, manager Gabe Kapler seems likely to keep his well rested ace on schedule Tuesday, which would push Lively's next start to Saturday.
Apr 2 2018Lively will start Tuesday's game against the Mets, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. After Monday's game was postponed, the Phillies debated skipping Lively's turn and going with Aaron Nola on regular rest Tuesday, but manager Gabe Kapler ultimately decided to keep his rotation in its normal order. The 26-year-old, who is expected to stick in the Phillies' rotation until either Mark Leiter (forearm) or Jerad Eickhoff return from the DL, posted a 4.26 ERA and 5.3 K/9 across 15 starts for Philadelphia in 2017.
Mar 26 2018Lively will open the season in the Phillies' starting rotation, Matt Gelb of The Athletic Philadelphia reports. With Jerad Eickhoff (lat) and Mark Leiter (forearm) expected to open the season on the disabled list, Lively stepped up and beat out Zach Eflin for the team's final rotation spot. The 26-year-old posted a 4.26 ERA across 15 starts for the Phillies in 2017, though that came with a 5.58 xFIP, suggesting there may have been some luck at play. He also generated a lackluster 5.3 K/9 with the big club last season, so there are likely better fantasy options out there if you're looking for a fill-in starter to open the season. Lively will likely head back to the minors once either Leiter or Eickhoff are ready to return.
Mar 20 2018Lively has a path to the Phillies' rotation with Jerad Eickhoff and Mark Leiter out injured, MLB.com reports.Lively had been in consideration for the Phillies' fifth starter job until the signing of Jake Arrieta apparently ended that competition. Now, Eickhoff is out six to eight weeks with a lat strain and swingman Leiter is out two to three weeks with a flexor strain. That leaves Lively competing with Zach Eflin, Drew Hutchison and Tom Eshelman for the final rotation spot. Lively posted a 4.26 ERA in 15 starts for Philadelphia last year, though his 5.58 xFIP suggests that he got rather lucky. His 14 percent strikeout rate leaves him overly reliant on batted ball luck and limits his fantasy value.
Mar 12 2018Lively no longer appears to be in contention for the fifth spot in the Phillies rotation after the team signed Jake Arrieta to a three-year, $75 million contract Sunday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Lively had been competing with Zach Eflin, Mark Leiter, Jake Thompson and non-roster invitee Drew Hutchison for the No. 5 role, but the Phillies now appear set to proceed with a rotation of Aaron Nola, Arrieta, Vince Velasquez, Nick Pivetta and Jerad Eickhoff to open the season. Considering that Thompson and Leiter worked in long relief at times last season, both would seem to have a leg up on Lively for spots in the bullpen as well. That likely means that Lively will join the rotation at Triple-A Lehigh Valley when camp breaks.
Feb 22 2018Lively will compete for the Phillies' final rotation spot during spring training, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The Phillies currently have four locks to open the season in their rotation, leaving Lively to compete with the likes of Mark Leiter, Jake Thompson and Zach Eflin for the lone remaining spot. This could still change if Philadelphia goes out and signs another starter, as they are one of a few teams linked to free agent Jake Arrieta. While Lively posted what looks like a respectable 4.26 ERA across 15 starts (88.2 innings) in his first taste of the majors last season, ERA estimators suggest that mark could have easily been a run higher (5.58 xFIP, 5.27 SIERA). The soon-to-be 26-year-old also posted a lackluster 5.3 K/9, so even if he earns a rotation spot with a strong spring training, his upside is limited.
Sep 29 2017Lively (4-7) picked up the win Friday against the Mets. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out one over six innings.Despite allowing only six Mets to reach base Friday, Lively had to be lifted from the game after running his pitch count up to 97 over six laborious innings of work. Nonetheless, it was a solid bounceback performance for the 25-year-old starter who had served up six runs over five innings in a start against the Braves last week. He'll wrap up his debut big-league campaign with a 4.26 ERA over 15 starts and will enter the 2018 season with a chance to once again battle for a starting rotation spot.
Sep 22 2017Lively (3-7) allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five innings as he took the loss Friday against the Braves. For the first time since August 26, Lively allowed more than three runs in a start. He got touched up for three extra-base hits, including a home run. Lively has been inconsistent, but with a 4.35 ERA, he has been a roughly league average starter in his first crack at major league action.
Sep 17 2017Lively allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two batters Saturday against the Athletics. He didn't factor into the decision. It's an unfortunate final line for Lively, who would have pitched deeper into the game had a two-hour rain delay not cut his start short. The 25-year-old had strung together three straight quality starts prior to Saturday's rain-shortened outing, compiling a 2.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB in 21 innings during that span. While he owns a fine 3.94 ERA through 77.2 innings this season, his fantasy value is limited by his 5.5 K/9 and the fact that he pitches for the lowly Phillies. His next start is expected to come Friday against the Braves.
Sep 11 2017Lively (3-6) picked up a loss after allowing three runs on six hits over eight innings in a 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Sunday. He struck out seven and walked one. This was Lively's third straight quality start. He's now 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA and a 28:9 K:BB in 32 innings over five starts since returning to the majors from Triple-A. The Phillies are certain to bring in some veteran starting pitching this offseason, but Lively is looking like he will enter camp next spring as a favorite for a rotation spot.
Sep 5 2017Lively (3-5) held the Mets to a single run on four hits and three walks over seven innings en route to the win Tuesday. He struck out four. The rookie even supported his own cause with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate that included a two-run single and a two-run homer. Lively's been a bit of a hit-or-miss fantasy play, but the hits have been more common since his return from Triple-A, as he's now tossed three quality stats in four outings. However, he'll draw a tough matchup on the road against the Nationals on Sunday.
Aug 31 2017Lively (2-5) beat the Marlins with six innings of two-run ball Thursday, allowing just six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. While you wouldn't know it from his record, Lively has now turned in quality starts in seven of his first 10 major-league appearances. The rookie successfully navigated a dangerous Miami lineup in this one, most notably holding Giancarlo Stanton without a hit in three at-bats. Lively also helped his own cause at the dish, knocking in two runs with a timely bases-loaded single in the fourth inning. His 5.13 K/9 limits Lively's appeal next time out in what otherwise looks like a favorable matchup Tuesday at Citi Field.
Aug 26 2017Lively (1-5) allowed six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight across five innings to take the loss Saturday against the Cubs.Lively allowed four homers and simply didn't give the Phillies any reasonable chance to compete with the Cubs. Overall, he's held opponents to three or fewer earned runs in all but a pair of his nine starts, and aside from this horrible outing, he's been a pretty steady fantasy option when taking the mound. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Marlins.
Aug 20 2017Lively was promoted from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will start Sunday against the Giants, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Despite solid numbers at Triple-A (3.15 ERA, 1.16 WHIP), Lively profiles as a No. 5 starter or swing man long term. His 17 strikeouts in 42.2 big-league innings (seven starts) earlier this season confirm his lack of impact stuff. He is a very risky fantasy option Sunday, even against a lackluster Giants offense.
Aug 20 2017Lively tossed six innings of two-run, six-hit ball Sunday against the Giants but came away with a no-decision.Lively, who was recently called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before the game, also struck out four and walked two in his eighth start of the season. It's unclear how long he'll hold down the fifth spot in the Phillies' rotation, but as it stands, he's slated to take on the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Friday.
Aug 6 2017Lively (knee) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday.Lively had his start pushed back a few days after he was hit on the knee by a line drive in his prior start. The Phillies have an opening in their rotation, but it looks like Zach Eflin will be the first choice to fill that spot. Lively is likely next up if Eflin fails to capitalize on his opportunity.
Jul 30 2017Lively will have his next start at Triple-A Lehigh Valley pushed back a few days after he was hit in the back of his left knee by a line drive Friday, Michael Blouse of the Allentown Morning Call reports.Lively has pitched well since he was sent back to Triple-A. He's 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA and a 22:6 K:BB in 23 innings during the month of July. Jake Thompson is currently getting a look in the Phillies' rotation, but if he fails to capitalize on his opportunity the Phils could turn to Lively or Zach Eflin to take Thompson's spot.
Jul 6 2017Lively (1-4) gave up four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts over four innings in a loss against the Pirates on Wednesday. The rookie right-hander hadn't failed to complete five innings in any of his first six MLB starts, but that run came to an end in ugly fashion when the Pirates hung a six-run fourth inning on him. Lively has only a 17:13 K:BB over 42.2 innings, and that minimal strikeout rate is going to make it hard for him to keep his ERA (currently 3.80) in fantasy-friendly territory.
Jun 30 2017Lively (1-3) allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two over 6.1 innings in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Mets.He gutted out a solid effort despite some control issues, and there's no shame in being outdueled by Jacob deGrom. He's now given the Phillies a quality start in five of his first six big-league outings, but his 3.72 ERA is probably due for some regression given his woeful 13:12 K:BB in 39 innings. The 25-year-old will next take the mound Wednesday at home against the Pirates.
Jun 24 2017Lively (1-2) allowed five runs (four earned) over 5.1 innings Saturday against the Diamondbacks. He walked four and did not strike anyone out.The lack of strikeouts was concerning, but it has not been consistent across all five of Lively's starts in the majors this season. Still, Saturday was the first time he allowed more than three earned runs and it was also the shortest outing of his young career. Lively figures to stay in the Phillies' rotation for the time being.
Jun 19 2017Lively allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. He struck out six and walked one.Lively got off to a rough start Sunday, allowing the three runs off two homers in the first inning, but he settled in after that and held the Diamondbacks scoreless the rest of the way. His six strikeouts were a season-high. Lively was in line to pick up the win, but Hector Neris blew the save and the D-backs went on to win in the 10th inning.
Jun 14 2017Lively allowed three runs on eight hits over seven innings in a 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday. He struck out two and walked two.Lively has gone seven innings in all three of his major-league starts and hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of those outings. He relies on pitching to contact which will leave him prone to blow-ups, but he is making it work so far. He will face the Diamondbacks at home in his next start.
Jun 8 2017Lively allowed three runs on nine over seven innings against the Braves on Thursday in the Phillies' 3-1 loss. While it was still a strong start for Lively, it was not as good as Lively's strong debut last week, when he gave up one run on four hits over seven innings. The 25-year-old has definitely made his case to stay in Philadelphia's rotation going forward.
Jun 3 2017Lively was officially recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Saturday's game against the Giants. The 25-year-old righty has typically been excellent at preventing runs and baserunners in the minors, and this year has been no different, as he boasts a 2.40 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in nine starts for Lehigh Valley. Despite those sparkling numbers, he lacks even mid-rotation stuff, profiling as a No. 5 starter or swing man. He is a high-risk start Saturday in most formats, and does not figure to miss many bats at the big-league level. If he can tread water, he could stick in the rotation for the foreseeable future with Vince Velasquez (elbow) and Clay Buchholz (forearm) both on the DL.
Jun 3 2017Lively (1-0) allowed one run on four hits and three walks over seven innings to earn the win Saturday against the Giants.Lively out-dueled Johnny Cueto in his big league debut, but the fact he failed to strike out a batter while walking three suggest that he could struggle in future starts. With Vince Velasquez (elbow) and Clay Buchholz (forearm) both on the disabled list, he'll get at least another start in the rotation, but unless he can continue to impress the coaching staff, his stay in the rotation is tenuous at best. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Braves.
May 29 2017Lively is the most likely candidate to join the Phillies' rotation this week, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Zach Eflin was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after a poor outing Sunday, creating an opening for Lively to potentially fill. He is 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA and a 45:7 K:BB in 56.1 innings for Lehigh Valley this season. The 25-year-old works in the low-90s with his fastball and relies on pitching down in the zone to try to induce weak contact from hitters. If he gets the call, his first start will likely come Saturday at home against the Giants.
May 13 2017Lively has joined the Phillies in Washington D.C., and he will serve as the 26th player for Sunday's doubleheader, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports. The right-hander will serve as depth for the twin bill. Lively owns a 2.48 ERA in 36.1 innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year, striking out 24 and walking five. Lively delivered for the IronPigs with an 11-5 record and a 3.06 ERA last season, as well. Despite that success, he's lost steam as a prospect.
