Mar 31 2025Atlanta transferred Jimenez (knee) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez is expected to be sidelined until the second half of the season while he remains on the mend from November surgery on his left knee, so his move to the 60-day IL won't affect his timeline for a return. The transaction will free up a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Stuart Fairchild, whom Atlanta acquired from Cincinnati on Monday.
Mar 25 2025Atlanta placed Jimenez on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left knee articular cartilage injury. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez underwent knee surgery back in November and will be out at least until the second half and perhaps for the entirety of the 2025 campaign. He is a candidate to be shifted to the 60-day IL if/when Atlanta needs to free up a spot on its 40-man roster.
Feb 23 2025Jiménez could end up missing the entire 2025 season as he recovers from offseason knee surgery, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta hasn't ruled the right-hander out yet, and if his rehab goes well he could rejoin the big-league bullpen soon after the All-Star break. Jiménez had the best statistical season of his career in 2024 despite pitching with pain in his left knee from July on, posting a 2.62 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 82:23 K:BB over 68.2 innings while racking up a career-high 27 holds. In his absence, Pierce Johnson, Aaron Bummer and Dylan Lee figure to be the primary setup men for closer Raisel Iglesias. "I'm just focusing on my rehab," Jiménez said this week in camp. "Obviously it's a long process, but I come here every day to work and try to do everything that I can just to make it right now."
Nov 4 2024Jimenez is expected to mis the next 8-to-12 months while recovering from surgery to repair damaged cartilage in his left knee, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This news came out of the blue for Jimenez, who was one of Atlanta's top relievers during the 2024 campaign. A timeline for his return should come into focus as he begins to progress in his rehab, but it appears he'll be sidelined for the first half of the 2025 season if not longer.
Aug 2 2024Jimenez picked up the save in Friday's 5-3 victory over the Marlins, allowing one hit and one walk over one scoreless inning with three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Raisel Iglesias pitched on three consecutive days, manager Brian Snitker called upon Jimenez to lock up the win for Atlanta. The righty reliever struggled a bit to secure his 23rd career save, requiring 28 pitches to polish off the game. He now sports a 2.25 ERA with 48:17 K:BB across 44 innings this season. Jimenez appears to be the next in line for saves in the Atlanta bullpen if anything happens to Iglesias given the usage pattern in this game.
Jul 8 2024Jimenez earned a save against the Diamondbacks on Monday, allowing one walk and striking out one batter in one scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Primary closer Raisel Iglesias worked the ninth and 10th frames, so Atlanta turned to Jimenez to close things out after the team scored in the top of the 11th. The veteran right-hander issued a one-out walk but kept Arizona off the scoreboard to earn the save. Jimenez has been one of Atlanta's top high-leverage options this season with two saves and 17 holds along with a 2.31 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 38:14 K:BB over 35 frames. Iglesias should continue to get the vast majority of the save chances moving forward, but Jimenez appears to be among the team's top closing options when the former is unavailable or used in a different capacity.
Jun 17 2024Jimenez struck out one batter in a perfect inning to earn a save over the Tigers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez tossed 10 of 13 pitches for strikes to protect the 2-1 lead and earn his first save of the year. He dropped his season ERA to 2.89 with a 30:10 K:BB through 28 innings. Since yielding four runs in a loss to the Padres on May 20, Jimenez has given up two runs over his last 10 appearances. Raisel Iglesias allowed two runs in a loss to the Rays on Sunday and was likely getting a routine day off Monday.
May 21 2024Jimenez (1-1) blew his first save of the season and took the loss in the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Padres, coughing up four runs on three hits and two walks in one inning. He failed to strike out a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander entered a 5-2 game in the top of the eighth inning and immediately issued a four-pitch walk to Ha-Seong Kim, setting the stage for a rare disastrous outing. Jimenez has only been charged with runs in three of his 18 appearances this season, posting a 3.50 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB over 18 innings with nine holds and a win as one of Atlanta's most reliable setup men.
Apr 8 2024Jimenez struck out two over 1.2 perfect innings Sunday to record his second hold of the season in a win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander entered the game in the sixth inning and needed only 21 pitches (16 strikes) to carve up the heart of Arizona's order. With Raisel Iglesias unavailable after pitching two straight days, it was Pierce Johnson and not Jimenez who got the save Sunday, and the latter hasn't pitched any later than the seventh inning through his first four appearances this season. Jimenez has been sharp in his role, posting a 2.08 ERA and 4:1 K:BB through 4.1 frames, but he appears to be no higher than fourth or fifth in the packing order in the Atlanta bullpen.
Mar 18 2024Jimenez struck out one in two-thirds of a scoreless inning of relief during Sunday's split-squad game against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has had a solid spring, giving up only one run with a 6:3 K:BB over 4.2 innings. Jimenez should be one of Atlanta's top setup men from the right side this season in front of closer Raisel Iglesias, and he's got a strong chance of topping the 13 holds he recorded in 2023 over 59 appearances.
Nov 2 2023Jimenez signed a three-year, $26 million contract extension with Atlanta on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta has now locked up two impending free agent relievers after inking Pierce Johnson to a two-year contract extension last week. Jimenez earned the new deal following an excellent 2023 campaign which saw him collect a 3.04 ERA and 73:14 K:BB over 56.1 innings. He is in line to help set up for Raisel Iglesias again in 2024.
Jun 15 2023Jimenez struck out one over 1.2 perfect innings of relief Wednesday to record his fourth hold of the season in the second game of a doubleheader against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing his former club, the right-hander was dialed in as he protected a 6-5 lead, but despite throwing just 13 pitches (11 strikes) he was replaced by A.J. Minter for the final out of the game and missed out on what would have been his first save of the year. Jimenez was acquired in the offseason from Detroit to bolster Atlanta's high-leverage crew, but he fell out of favor after giving up runs in six of his first nine appearances in May. The 28-year-old appears to be turning things around, however -- he hasn't allowed an earned run in six straight outings with a 7:2 K:BB in 6.2 innings, collecting holds in two of his last three trips to the mound.
Apr 29 2023Jimenez was activated Saturday from the paternity list. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez will return to Atlanta's bullpen ahead of Saturday's game against the Mets after welcoming a new addition to his growing family. The former Tigers closer has pitched well out of the gate this season for the reigning NL East champs.
Mar 19 2023Jimenez struck out one in a perfect sixth inning during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was acquired from Detroit in the offseason to join Atlanta's set-up crew behind closer Raisel Iglesias, but Jimenez underwent back surgery last October and has been brought along slowly in camp. His Opening Day availability doesn't seem to be in jeopardy, however. The 28-year-old posted the best numbers of his career in 2022 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 33.3 percent strikeout rate, and Jimenez should easily be able to top last year's 11 holds with consistent high-leverage work for a much better team.
Feb 17 2023Jimenez is already throwing side sessions and is expected to be fully recovered from offseason back surgery prior to Opening Day, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. "Oh, yeah, he's fine," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had a breakout season for Detroit in 2022, posting a career-best 33.3 percent strikeout rate and 5.6 percent walk rate over 56.2 innings, but a lumbar strain ended his campaign a couple weeks early. Dealt to Atlanta in December, Jimenez should be one of the team's top setup men in 2023 alongside A.J. Minter, and he could get some save chances should closer Raisel Iglesias be unavailable at any point.
Jan 13 2023Jimenez signed a one-year, $2.765 million contract with the Braves to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Acquired from the Tigers via trade last month, Jimenez is slated to help set up for Raisel Iglesias in his new digs. The righty finally broke out in 2022 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 77:13 K:BB over 56.2 innings.
Dec 7 2022The Braves acquired Jimenez and cash considerations from the Tigers in exchange for minor league infielder-outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and minor league left-hander Jake Higginbotham. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez finally broke through for the Tigers in 2022, producing a 3.49 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 77:13 K:BB ratio over 56.2 innings. He would figure to slide into a middle relief role for the Braves and will be arbitration-eligible for a final time this winter.
Nov 9 2022Jimenez (back) is expected to be ready for the start of spring training in February, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez closed the 2022 campaign on the 15-day injured list with a right lumbar spine strain before the Tigers reinstated him one day after the regular season ended. He's still not fully healthy, however, as he's spent the past month focusing on strengthening his core muscles to regain stability in his spine. Jimenez should start throwing later this winter and will likely enter the spring with no restrictions, but it's unclear if he'll be joining the Tigers for camp. The team will first have to decide whether or not to extend Jimenez a contract for 2023 prior to the Nov. 18 tender deadline.
Sep 24 2022Jimenez's back injury won't require surgery, so the righty expects to be ready for the start of spring training, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez had the best season of his career this year, with his 3.49 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 5.6 percent walk rate representing career lows while his 33.3 percent strikeout rate stands as a career high. His year ended slightly prematurely due to a lumbar spine strain, but the issue isn't expected to carry over into next season.
Aug 28 2022Jimenez earned the save Sunday in Texas, striking out one in two-thirds of an inning in a 9-8 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez entered the game with one out and a runner on first after the Rangers scored three runs off Gregory Soto to get within a run of the Tigers. Jimenez struck out Adolis Garcia and retired the next batter to end the game. It was his second save of the season and first since July 4. With Soto struggling, Jimenez may receive the occasional save chance over the last part of the season.
Jul 4 2022Jimenez pitched a perfect ninth inning in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Guardians to earn the save. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers used regular closer Gregory Soto to lock down a win in Game 1, so they turned to Jimenez in the nightcap. The righty looked good, retiring the side on just 11 pitches. Jimenez has been solid this season with a 3.23 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 40 strikeouts across 30.2 innings. Along with Soto, he's a candidate to get traded to a contender that needs bullpen help before the deadline next month.
May 4 2022Jimenez allowed three runs on two hits in an inning of work during the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Pirates. He walked one and did not have any strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez entered the game with a sparkling 2.16 ERA this season, having allowed just two earned runs across his first nine appearances. However, we've seen the righty have implosions in the past, and Wednesday's poor outing raised his ERA to 4.82. That's more in line with the 5.96 ERA he posted last year or the horrendous 7.15 ERA he registered in 2020. It's hard for the Tigers or fantasy managers to have much confidence in Jimenez moving forward.
Apr 16 2022Jimenez struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief to earn a hold in Friday's win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez has carried over a strong spring into the regular season, as he's now logged four scoreless innings with four strikeouts in the early going. The righty has been volatile before, but he has the talent to string together some good performances if he's able to find some consistency. He should continue to work in front of Michael Fulmer and Gregory Soto in the Detroit bullpen.
Apr 4 2022Jimenez tossed a scoreless inning in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays and now has a perfect 0.00 ERA this spring with four strikeouts across five innings of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a very small sample size, but after posting a 7.15 ERA in the condensed 2020 season and a 5.96 ERA last year, any promising signs are welcome with Jimenez. The righty was once considered a potential future closer in Detroit, though he's been passed up by the likes of Gregory Soto and Michael Fulmer in the Tigers' bullpen. Jimenez could pitch himself back onto the fantasy radar, but fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach until he displays more consistency.
Mar 22 2022Jimenez agreed to a one-year contract with the Tigers on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The terms of the deal remain unclear, but Jimenez and Detroit were able to come to terms without the need of an arbiter. The 27-year-old struggled in 2021 with a 5.96 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 57:35 K:BB over 45.1 innings.
Oct 3 2021Jimenez (6-1) allowed no hits and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless inning to earn the win against the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez gave up at least one run in three of his final six appearances of the year, but he was sharp in Sunday's regular-season finale to earn his sixth win of 2021. The right-hander posted a 5.96 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 45.1 innings and earned a save and five holds across his 52 relief appearances this season.
Sep 27 2021Jimenez retired all four batters he faced in a 14-pitch relief appearance in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since being reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Jimenez has come on to deliver two perfect outings out of the bullpen. He'll remain part of the bridge to closer Michael Fulmer during the final week of the regular season.
Sep 21 2021Jimenez (illness) will be reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez recently reported to Triple-A Toledo to work out, but he'll be able to rejoin the major-league bullpen without making a rehab appearance. Across three appearances in September prior to testing positive for COVID-19, the right-hander allowed three runs in 2.2 innings.
Sep 16 2021Jimenez (illness) has reported to Triple-A Toledo to resume working out, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez tested positive for COVID-19 in early September, but he'll now begin building back up with the minor-league club. The right-hander will require at least one rehab appearance before he's activated, but it's not yet clear when he'll pitch for Toledo.
Sep 6 2021Jimenez (illness) landed on the COVID-19 injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move was an expected one after it was revealed that Jimenez had tested positive for the virus Monday. He'll now be out for at least 10 days.
Aug 22 2021Jimenez pitched a perfect inning and struck out two to earn the save in Sunday's 5-3 extra-innings win over Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After regular closer Gregory Soto kept the game tied in the ninth inning and failed to secure the win in the 10th, Detroit rallied ahead in the 11th. Enter Jimenez, who threw eight of his 10 pitches for strikes to lock down his first save in 2021. The right-hander logged 17 saves over the three previous seasons, but he's seen more of a middle-innings role this year while struggling to a 6.31 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 35.2 innings. As such, Jimenez shouldn't be expected to draw many more save chances outside of emergency situations like Sunday.
Jul 28 2021Jimenez allowed three runs in an inning of work during Wednesday's win over the Twins. He gave up three hits and a walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers prevailed 17-14, so no one really pitched well in this one, and that includes Jimenez. The righty now has a 7.07 ERA this season, and he's clearly fallen behind the likes of Jose Cisnero, Michael Fulmer and Gregory Soto in the Detroit bullpen. That gives Jimenez very little fantasy value unless injuries or trades open up a bigger opportunity later in the year. Even then, the 26-year-old is unlikely to become a trustworthy option anytime soon.
Jul 18 2021Jimenez (3-1) picked up the win over the Tigers in the second game of Saturday's twin bill, allowing an unearned run on one hit while striking out two over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez pitched a scoreless seventh but was a bit wild the following frame in extras. He started off by hitting Nelson Cruz and eventually allowed the Twins to take the lead on a wild pitch. Fortunately for him, the Tigers were able to walk it off in the bottom half, which awarded him his third win of the year and his first since June 14. The 26-year-old has had his share of struggles this season with a 7.54 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and a 28:21 K:BB over 22.2 innings.
Jun 14 2021Jimenez (2-0) earned the win in relief Monday against the Royals after not allowing a run across two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez entered the game in the third inning after Alex Lange left the game with shoulder discomfort, and he recorded the final two outs of the inning with ease -- needing just seven pitches -- to claim his second victory of the campaign. The right-hander now has four straight scoreless outings and seems to be trending in the right direction once again.
May 8 2021Jimenez was recalled by the Tigers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez was sent to the Tigers' alternate training site in late April but will now return to the major-league bullpen after right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (chest) was placed on the injured list. Jimenez gave up five runs on no hits and seven walks while striking out two in one inning across two relief appearances to begin the year.
Apr 21 2021Jimenez was optioned to the Tigers' alternate training site following the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez has gotten off to a rough start this year and allowed five runs on no hits and seven walks while striking out two in one inning across two relief appearances. He'll now head to the team's alternate camp to sort things out. The move will make room for Spencer Turnbull, who was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of the twin bill.
Apr 18 2021Jimenez allowed two earned runs on four walks while retiring just two batters in Saturday's loss to the Athletics. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since being recalled on Thursday, Jimenez has made two appearances, and he's allowed five earned runs across just one inning of work. Walks have been the biggest problem for the righty, as he's issued a whopping seven free passes to the 10 batters he's faced. Jimenez is going to have to pitch a lot better if he wants to stick in the majors. He should continue to work in a low-leverage role for the Tigers for now.
Apr 15 2021Jimenez was recalled by the Tigers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez failed to break camp with the Tigers this year but will join the major-league bullpen after outfielder Nomar Mazara (abdomen) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday. The right-hander led the Tigers with five saves in 2020, but it's not yet clear whether he'll factor into the late-inning mix for Detroit in the near future.
Mar 27 2021Jimenez was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez closed out nine games in 2019 and led the Tigers with five saves in last year's shortened season, but he will not be part of the late-inning mix to open the 2021 campaign and will not even break camp with the big club. Jimenez figures to be called up at some point this season, but he presumably will need to show some results before being considered for save opportunities again.
Mar 14 2021Jimenez has allowed one earned run across 2.2 innings so far in Grapefruit League action. He's given up two hits and two walks while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez put zeroes on the board in his first two spring outings but hit a rough patch Saturday, allowing three runs (one earned) on a hit, a hit batter and two walks while recording just two outs. The righty has been known for his inconsistency the past few seasons, so it'd be nice to see him string together a few better outings after Saturday's dud. Jimenez is potentially in the mix to close for Detroit, though Gregory Soto and Bryan Garcia are likely ahead of him in the pecking order at this point. Jimenez led the Tigers with five saves in six opportunities last season, though he also posted a 7.15 ERA across 22.2 innings.
Feb 18 2021Jimenez is one of several options to close out games for the Tigers to begin the season, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It once seemed Jimenez was destined to take the closer role in Detroit and run with it, but the 26-year-old has endured some struggles, including a 7.37 ERA across 22.2 innings last season. The Tigers have a new manager in A.J. Hinch, so it might be a clean slate of sorts for Jimenez, but he'll need a strong spring to overtake the likes of Gregory Soto and Bryan Garcia in the bullpen pecking order.
Jan 15 2021Jimenez and the Tigers settled on a one-year, $1.5 million contract Friday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez struggled significantly in 2020, losing his closer job while posting a 7.15 ERA in 22.2 innings. The Tigers don't have any obvious candidates for the role going forward, but Jimenez's career 5.65 ERA hardly suggests he should be favored to win it even though he's pitched in the ninth inning in the past.
Sep 10 2020Jimenez allowed three earned runs on two hits while recording just two outs in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez had looked a little better recently with a 3.86 ERA over his previous six appearances (4.2 innings), but as has been the case too often this season, he was hit hard Thursday. The former Detroit closer fell victim to two home runs, and he's now given up seven long balls in just 15 innings this year. With an ugly 10.80 ERA, Jimenez is likely to remain in a lower-leverage role for the Tigers, while Bryan Garcia, Jose Cisnero and Gregory Soto share save opportunities.
Sep 5 2020Jimenez (1-3) allowed an unearned run on one hit and took the loss in Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez pitched the eighth inning of a 2-2 game, and because it was technically extra innings, Minnesota started the frame with a runner on second. A little seeing-eye single up the middle did Jimenez in, and he didn't get any help from center fielder Derek Hill, who bobbled the ball as he tried to come up firing to home. It's a tough-luck loss for the 25-year-old in a season that's been a disaster of late. Jimenez now has a 10.80 ERA, and he's on the outside looking in at the closer role in Detroit.
Sep 2 2020Jimenez (1-2) allowed a run on a hit and a walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the Brewers on Wednesday. He also hit two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez had little control in his brief appearance, and the bases-loaded sacrifice fly he allowed to Eric Sogard was enough to stick him with the loss. The 25-year-old Jimenez was pulled from the closer role a week ago and has only made three appearances since. In that span, he's allowed two runs in two innings. Jimenez has an 11.81 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 11 strikeouts across 10.2 innings this season. With no closing duties expected in his future, he's a non-factor in the fantasy game.
Aug 26 2020Jimenez is no longer the Tigers' closer, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old allowed seven runs in his past two outings and appeared during the sixth inning Wednesday, with manager Ron Gardenhire confirming the change after the game. Jimenez has a 12.46 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 9:4 K:BB through 8.2 innings this season and will look to get back on track in lower-leverage spots. Gregory Soto is a likely candidate to receive save chances based on matchups, though Jose Cisnero and Buck Farmer are also expected to be in the mix.
Aug 23 2020Jimenez allowed three earned runs on one hit and two walks while retiring just a single batter in Sunday's 7-4 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez got the ninth inning with the Tigers up 7-1, but he promptly walked the first two batters and then allowed a three-run home run to Greg Allen before getting pulled with one out. The 25-year-old is ostensibly still the closer in Detroit, but with an atrocious 12.46 ERA, it's hard to see manager Ron Gardenhire having much confidence in Jimenez moving forward. Buck Farmer would likely take the reins in the ninth inning if the team decided to make a switch.
Aug 20 2020Jimenez allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while retiring just one batter in Thursday's loss to the White Sox. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez has served as Detroit's primary closer this season, but with the Tigers entering the day on an eight-game losing streak, the reliever came into the game with his team down 5-0 in the eighth. After striking out Adam Engel to begin the frame, Jimenez could not record another out. He was lifted from the game after Eloy Jimenez took him deep for a two-run homer. The right-hander now holds a messy 9.72 ERA on the campaign, and given his struggles, it would not be surprising for manager Ron Gardenhire to look elsewhere next time the Tigers come across a small lead in the ninth inning.
Aug 9 2020Jimenez pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn the save in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez last pitched on Friday, when he allowed three earned runs and blew his first save of the season, so it was good to see the Detroit closer bounce back Sunday and record his fifth save of the year. He still has a bloated 6.43 ERA through seven appearances and his velocity has been a bit down to begin the season, but he should stick in the ninth inning with the Tigers lacking a ton of other great options in their bullpen.
Aug 8 2020Jimenez struck out two but gave up a game-tying two-run home run to Adam Frazier in the ninth inning of Friday's 17-13 extra-innings win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander came within one strike of fanning the side and securing his fifth save of the season, but instead Bryan Reynolds and Phillip Evans poked consecutive two-out singles to set up Frazier's blast and saddle Jimenez with his first blown save. The Tigers closer now carried an unsightly 7.50 ERA and 1.50 WHIP through six innings with a 4:1 K:BB, and it's worth noting that his velocity remains down -- he topped out at 95.7 mph with his fastball Friday, a figure that would have been more reflective of his average fastball in prior seasons, and the four-seam fastball Frazier tagged registered at only 91.9 mph.
Aug 2 2020Jimenez (0-1) was charged with the loss in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Reds. He allowed one run on three hits with no walks or strikeouts in one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Nick Castellanos error, Jimenez gave the lead right back the next half inning. He is 4-for-4 in save chances on the young season, but Jimenez is worth keeping a close eye on as his velocity is down a tick and the swing-and-miss has been noticeably absent (just two swinging strikes on 17 pitches Sunday).
Jul 29 2020Jimenez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record the save in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers are off to a 4-2 start, and Jimenez has saves in all of the team's wins. The hard-throwing righty has been up and down since arriving in the majors in 2017, but he has the stuff to be a dominant closer, as evidenced by the 82 strikeouts he recorded in just 59.2 innings a season ago.
Jul 28 2020Jimenez did not allow a baserunner and struck out one to earn the save Tuesday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez was called upon to protect a one-run lead and did so with little trouble, needing only eight pitches to retire the side in order. It was a bounceback outing for Jimenez, who allowed an earned run on two hits in last outing -- though he did successfully hold the lead. Jimenez has earned a save while closing out all three of the Tigers' wins this season.
Jul 26 2020Jimenez worked around two hits and a run to secure the save in Sunday's win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez was spotted a two-run lead, and he quickly gave up consecutive doubles that cut the lead in half. However, the righty buckled down and stranded the tying run at second base to secure his second save in as many days. Jimenez often makes things interesting in the ninth inning, but the rebuilding Tigers will likely give the 25-year-old a decently long leash to establish himself as the team's closer.
Jul 25 2020Jimenez worked around a walk to throw a scoreless ninth inning and earn the save against the Reds on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers took the lead against Raisel Iglesias in the top of the ninth. Jimenez entered the game and did not turn in his prettiest outing; he threw five straight pitches out of the strike zone at one point and left a hanging pitch that Eugenio Suarez just missed on the final flyout. Still, Jimenez got the job done and is firmly entrenched in the role for Detroit.
Mar 23 2020Jimenez posted a 1.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP to go along with five strikeouts across six innings this spring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez looked sharp in the small Grapefruit League sample and will be Detroit's unquestioned closer whenever the 2020 regular season is able to begin. Any closer has value in fantasy, but Jimenez's struggles in 2019 (five blown saves in 14 opportunities) along with his team context make him a bit of a risky pick compared to other end-game options.
Feb 24 2020Jimenez pitched a scoreless inning in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He allowed a hit and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the first time in his MLB career, Jimenez will enter the season as the closer. He struggled some in the role last year, blowing five of 14 save opportunities, though the 25-year-old did record an impressive 82 strikeouts across 59.2 innings. Like a lot of younger pitchers, the key for Jimenez will be controlling his dynamic arsenal, which is something he'll work on this spring.
Sep 28 2019Jimenez served up a solo homer but allowed no other baserunners in the ninth inning to earn the save in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez gave up a one-out homer to Yoan Moncada but still only needed 11 pitches to work through the ninth inning. The right-hander has a 4.37 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 82:23 K:BB over 59.2 innings while going 9-for-14 in save opportunities.
Sep 22 2019Jimenez allowed one hit with no walks while striking out none through a scoreless inning to record his eighth save in a 6-3 win over the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez gave up a single to start the ninth inning, but he quickly forced a double play and still faced the minimum to nail down his eighth save. The 24-year-old has a 4-7 record with a 4.37 ERA and 79 strikeouts through 64 appearances this season.
Sep 16 2019Jimenez allowed three hits in a scoreless inning Monday, striking out two batters and earning the save over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez gave up three straight singles after retiring the first two batters of the inning. Fortunately, he was able to strike out Trey Mancini to end the contest. The 24-year-old has thrown five scoreless innings this month, going 3-for-3 in save chances and lowering his ERA to 4.53 in the process.
Sep 10 2019Jimenez (4-7) earned the win Tuesday against the Yankees, working a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That Jimenez worked so efficiently through his inning of work is fairly impressive in a game that featured 11 hits and 11 runs by the Yankees. The righty reliever has been up and down this season, though he's got the closer's role on lock with little competition around him in the Detroit bullpen.
Sep 6 2019Jimenez tossed a scoreless 11th inning, allowing and a hit and striking out one to earn his sixth save of the year in Friday's 5-4 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez allowed Jurickson Profar a leadoff single, but retired the next three batters in order to preserve the one-run lead. The closer owns a 4.78 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 72 strikeouts in 52.2 innings this season.
Aug 21 2019Jimenez worked around a hit to pitch a clean ninth inning and earn the save in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Astros. He struck out two.
Aug 19 2019Jimenez will likely be unavailable for Monday's series opener against the Astros, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
Aug 16 2019Jimenez gave up a hit and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his third save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Rays.
Aug 14 2019Jimenez pitched a clean ninth inning with a strikeout to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Mariners.
Aug 9 2019Jimenez notched the save Friday night against the Royals after recording the final out.

Jul 12 2018Jimenez is expected to return to an eighth-inning setup role beginning Friday, when the Tigers intend to activate closer Shane Greene (shoulder) from the 10-day disabled list, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.Jimenez, who was named the Tigers' lone All-Star representative last weekend, received two save opportunities while Greene was sidelined and converted one of them. The 23-year-old will see his fantasy value take a major hit with Greene's reinstatement, but Jimenez should at least remain a useful ratio stabilizer in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues upon rejoining the setup ranks. Jimenez has posted a 2.85 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 10.1 K/9 across 44 appearances on the campaign.
Jul 6 2018Jimenez allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to pick up his third save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Rangers. He's been shaky lately, coughing up five runs over his prior 3.2 innings and four appearances coming into Friday, but Jimenez was able to get the job done and record his first save since Shane Greene (shoulder) hit the disabled list. Greene could be back before the All-Star break, but Jimenez figures to get whatever save chances the Tigers can produce in the meantime.
Jul 2 2018Jimenez will take on the role of Detroit's closer with Shane Greene on the disabled list due to a right shoulder strain, Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group reports.Jimenez has appeared in 42 games this season, logging a 2.77 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. To go along with a FIP that suggests his ERA could be even better (2.46), he's accumulated a 44:9 K:BB across 39 innings. Prior to allowing a walkoff home run this past weekend, Jimenez gave up three earned runs against the Athletics on June 25, which marked the first time he allowed a run to cross the plate during the month of June. Greene has been a decent closer for the Tigers this year, converting 19 of his 22 opportunities, but Jimenez could stake his claim as the club's ninth-inning option moving forward if he can excel over the next couple weeks.
Jul 2 2018Jimenez (4-1) blew the save but still picked up the win in Monday's game against the Blue Jays. He allowed a run on a hit and three walks in an inning of work.Jimenez was shaky in his first outing as the team's closer with Shane Greene (shoulder) placed on the disabled list earlier in the day. The 23-year-old had been much stingier issuing walks this season after posting a 4.3 BB/9 in 2017, but control was an issue in this one, as he walked more than two batters in an appearance for the first time this year. Jimenez should still hold onto the closer's gig for however long Greene is out, but if wants to potentially wrestle the job away for good, he'll have to pitch better than this during his audition.
Jun 30 2018Jimenez allowed a run on two hits, striking out one in 0.2 innings Saturday against the Blue Jays. One of the hits was a walk-off home run, saddling him with his first loss of the season.Jimenez got out of a jam in the eighth inning, preserving the tie with help from a Leonys Martin outfield assist to nail Devon Travis at home. Justin Smoak sent the Blue Jays home victorious on Jimenez's second pitch of the ninth inning, though, so Jimenez ultimately failed to get the job done. He's still been an effective reliever on the whole this season, pitching 39 innings with a 2.77 ERA. If Shane Greene continues to struggle or gets traded, Jimenez remains well-placed to take over the closing job despite Saturday's slip-up.
Jun 27 2018Jimenez pitched a scoreless inning in Wednesday's loss to the Athletics, allowing one hit and striking out two. After giving up three earned runs in his most recent outing Monday, this was a nice bounceback effort for Jimenez, who threw a season-high 37 pitches (29 for strikes). The 23-year-old now has a solid 2.58 ERA this season, and he could be next in line for saves if the Tigers decide to trade veteran closer Shane Greene at some point.
Jun 25 2018Jimenez gave up three runs on three hits and a walk in one inning Monday against the A's. He did not record a strikeout.Closer Shane Greene took the loss after giving up a game-winning home run in a tie game in the ninth inning, but Jimenez should shoulder the most blame for the Tigers not closing out this victory. He figures to be next in line for saves if Greene gets traded, injured or coughs up the job in another manner, but this outing won't expedite that process.
Jun 17 2018Jimenez recorded his second save of the season in Sunday's 3-1 win over the White Sox, tossing a scoreless inning of relief with three strikeouts.Regular Detroit closer Shane Greene had appeared in four straight games coming into Sunday, so he got the day off while Jimenez got a crack at a save opportunity. The 23-year-old dazzled, striking out all three Chicago hitters he faced on 14 pitches to lower his season ERA to 2.04. The veteran Greene remains a potential trade candidate, and such a move would seemingly thrust Jimenez into the closer's role on a regular basis.
Jun 14 2018Jimenez tossed a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout in Thursday's win over the Twins to record his 12th hold of the season.Jimenez has tossed six straight scoreless innings to lower his season ERA to 2.16. Shane Greene has been decent in the closer's role, but the Tigers could decide to deal the veteran if they fall out of contention at some point, which could put Jimenez in line to pick up some saves this season.
Jun 2 2018Jimenez pitched a clean ninth inning Saturday against the Blue Jays, picking up his first save of the season.Jimenez was called upon to close things out with Shane Greene unavailable after working three straight days, and the right-hander needed just 13 pitches -- eight of which went for strikes -- to end things and secure the win for the Tigers. He doesn't figure to see more than the occasional save chance with Greene performing well in the closer's role ahead of him, but Jimenez now owns a solid 2.54 ERA and 28:7 K:BB across 28.1 innings this season.
May 23 2018Jimenez recorded his ninth hold of the season in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Twins, pitching around a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning. He struck out one.Jimenez started the eighth inning by walking Brian Dozier but then got Max Kepler to ground into a double play to get out of trouble. He allowed a harmless single but struck out Eduardo Escobar to get through the frame. Jimenez now has a solid 2.66 ERA, which is drastically better than the 12.32 mark he posted last season.
May 18 2018Jimenez recorded his eighth hold of the season in Thursday's win over the Mariners by striking out all three batters he faced in the eighth inning.Jimenez was electric, as he struck out Mitch Haniger, Kyle Seager and Ryon Healy on 14 pitches. The 23-year-old had a 3.71 ERA 10 days ago, but he hasn't allowed an earned run in his last five appearances (4.2 innings), which has lowered that mark to 2.91. Jimenez also has 22 strikeouts in 21.2 innings this season.
May 9 2018Jimenez worked an inning of relief in Wednesday's loss to the Rangers, striking out the side without allowing a baserunner to lower his season ERA to 3.50.Jimenez started the season with 9.2 scoreless innings but he's been more shaky recently, as he came into Wednesday having allowed seven earned runs over his last 7.1 innings. The 23-year-old is still figuring things out at the MLB level, so expect some inconsistency moving forward, The talent is there, however, which he displayed by mowing down the side on just 12 pitches in this one.
Apr 20 2018Jimenez tossed a scoreless 10th inning to earn the win during the Tigers' win in Game 1of Friday's doubleheader against the Royals.Jimenez has started the season by allowing zero earned runs (one unearned) through his first 8.2 innings of work. The 23-year-old has a 2-0 record with two holds and should continue to see high leverage situations for the Tigers.
Apr 17 2018Jimenez grabbed his second hold of the season in Tuesday's win over the Orioles, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. He hasn't allowed a run through his first 7.2 innings of work this year.So far, Jimenez looks like a different pitcher than the one who posted a 12.32 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in 19 innings last season. The 23-year-old had a good spring training and he's carrying that over to the regular season. Shane Greene has performed reasonably well as Detroit's closer, but Jimenez is a candidate to close in the future for the Tigers, and they could turn to him at some point during an expected rebuilding season.
Apr 5 2018Jimenez (1-0) picked up his first MLB win Thursday against the White Sox after tossing a perfect inning of relief.Jimenez has yet to allow a run through his first four appearances (3.1 innings) this season. This is an encouraging sign for a player who posted a 12.32 ERA in his rookie season last year. The Tigers will likely continue turning to Jimenez in high-leverage situations, and he's a potential option to close at some point this season.
Apr 3 2018Through his first three appearances of the season, Jimenez has not allowed an earned run over 2.1 innings of work. It's of course incredibly early in the year, but for a player who posted a 12.32 ERA in 2017, every positive sign is welcome. Jimenez has electric stuff and could be a future closer for the Tigers, but he showed last year that he has work to do if he wants to succeed at the MLB level. The 23-year-old reportedly showed up to spring training in better shape this year, and he worked on developing a more consistent delivery. It will be interesting to see if Jimenez can sustain success for any significant amount of time. If he can, the rebuilding Tigers may choose to turn the ninth inning over to him at some point.
Mar 13 2018Jimenez lost weight in the offseason and worked on developing a more repeatable, consistent delivery, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. After posting a 12.32 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in 19 innings at the MLB level last season, Jimenez looks like a new pitcher in spring training. Through five innings of work, he hasn't allowed an earned run and has struck out eight. "I feel a lot better now," Jimenez said. "Just mechanically, my arm feels good. Everything just seems right." Of course, spring training success doesn't always carry over into the regular season, but it's at least a positive sign that the 23-year-old could take a step forward this year.
Mar 11 2018Jimenez, who has not allowed an earned run in five innings of work this spring, is making a good impression on manager Ron Gardenhire, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Jimenez has good stuff, but he struggled mightily last season, posting a 12.32 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in 19 innings. The 23-year-old has made offseason changes to his slider grip, and so far he looks good in camp. "Really good," Gardenhire said. "The ball is jumping out of his hand. When he's throwing it over the plate like that, attacking the hitter, putting them in a hole, he can be very good." Shane Greene will be Detroit's closer in 2018, but Jimenez could be the closer of the future.
Mar 8 2018Jimenez has made adjustments to his slider grip and has been getting more movement on the pitch this spring, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Tigers pitching coach Chris Bosio didn't tinker with Jimenez's arm action but he did suggest a new grip, which the 23-year-old righty has been incorporating during spring training. Jimenez said the change has given the pitch more right-to-left action. "It's doing a lot to set up hitters," he said. "Before it was more like a three to nine (hands on a clock) movement. Now it's more one to seven." Jimenez struggled mightily last season, posting a 12.32 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in 19 innings, but he has the stuff to be a dynamic late-inning reliever. The rebuilding Tigers will likely give him plenty of opportunities this season to figure things out at the MLB level.
Feb 22 2018Jimenez struck out the side in Thursday's exhibition against Florida Southern. He followed starter Alex Wilson into the game Thursday, pitching a cleaning inning on a day in which the Tigers racked up 18 strikeouts against their collegiate opponent. Jimenez has an opportunity to secure a high-leverage role for the Tigers this spring.
Sep 21 2017Jimenez pitched a scoreless inning in Wednesday's loss to the Athletics, allowing one hit and striking out two.Jimenez has now gone two straight appearances without allowing a run. While that doesn't sound like much, it's a step in the right direction for a guy with an 11.94 ERA and 2.19 WHIP. Jimenez has electric stuff, and the Tigers organization is hoping he learns to harness it effectively. The 22-year-old should get a few more appearances before the season is over as the team looks toward 2018.
Sep 7 2017Jimenez, who allowed five earned runs in a third of an inning Wednesday, said his decreased velocity is not responsible for his struggles, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. As has been the case in recent weeks, Jimenez was touching 93 and 94 mph with his fastball, not the high 90s he displayed in the minor leagues. However, the 22-year-old said location is to blame for his struggles. "(Speed) is the last thing I'm worried about right now. I'm not concerned about my velocity," he said. Jimenez is full of potential and still could be a future closer for Detroit, but until he harnesses his stuff, he won't be on the fantasy radar.
Aug 26 2017Jimenez (0-2) was saddled with the loss in Friday's game against the White Sox, giving up two hits -- including a walkoff single to Yolmer Sanchez -- without recording an out.Another outing, another poor performance for Jimenez, who now has an unsightly 11.45 ERA. He came on in the bottom of the ninth and promptly allowed a leadoff double to Tim Anderson before surrendering the hit to Sanchez. Jimenez simply can't be trusted at this point by the Tigers or fantasy owners, though the 22-year-old will probably continue to get low-leverage chances, as the Tigers are going nowhere this season and they'd like to better evaluate the young right-hander at the MLB level.
Aug 18 2017Jimenez's velocity was down in his most recent outing Wednesday, when he allowed three runs (two earned) over a third of an inning, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Jimenez has averaged 95.2 mph on his fastball this year, and he routinely dials it up to the high 90s. However, in his outing Wednesday, only one of his eight fastballs topped 94 mph, and most were clocked at 93 mph. Jimenez said he's healthy, and manager Brad Ausmus said he isn't concerned, though he added that he is "curious as to what the cause of the drop in velocity is." This was Jimenez's second appearance in as many days, and he's only pitched in back-to-back games three times this season, so perhaps fatigue is to blame. It will be interesting to see where his velocity is at next time out.
Aug 13 2017Jimenez worked two scoreless innings in Saturday's win over the Twins, allowing two hits and striking out one.Jimenez has now appeared in back-to-back games after previously not pitching since Aug. 6. He tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in the two most recent outings, and could slowly be gaining some confidence from manager Brad Ausmus, who said he'd use the 22-year-old in low leverage situations until he earns more high-pressure work.
Aug 11 2017Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Jimenez will be used in low-leverage situations until his performance warrants late-game work, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.Jimenez hasn't pitched since Aug. 6, when he allowed four earned runs and retired just two batters. Ausmus said he hasn't given up on the young flamethrower, but he'll also pick his spots when using him. "We'll probably pitch Joe in softer situations," Ausmus said. "And if he gets rolling, he'll graduate to tighter situations." Jimenez could be the Tigers' closer of the future, but his fantasy value this year looks pretty low.
Jul 31 2017The Tigers promoted Jimenez from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Matthew Mowery of The Oakland Press reports. The right-hander earns a roster spot as Detroit completes the trade that sent Justin Wilson and Alex Avila to the Cubs. Wilson's departure opens up a chance for Jimenez to occupy high-leverage relief spots, which may include some save chances. He's converted four of them with Toledo this year to accompany a sparkling 1.44 ERA and 13.0 K/9 in 26 appearances.
Jun 15 2017Jimenez (back) was activated off the minor-league disabled list, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. This aligns with prior reports, although it should be noted that the Tigers will have him stick around with High-A Lakeland for a little longer and make his first appearances off the DL with the Flying Tigers. Jimenez will likely head back to Triple-A Toledo once he gets back into the swing of things.
Jun 14 2017Jimenez (back) threw a successful bullpen session Monday and is slated for game action on Thursday, Emily Waldon of 2080 Baseball reports.Jimenez has been on the shelf since early May and has been rehabbing with the Tigers' affiliate in Lakeland. The team announced he'd be out for about a month, so his activity now is in line with that timeline. Jimenez will be reevaluated after Thursday's outing, at which point he could return to Triple-A Toledo, where he was before the injury.
May 15 2017Jimenez (back) is expected to miss a month of action due to his back injury, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. No timetable for his return was initially given, but further examination by team doctors helped to produce a clearer picture of what Jimenez's road to recovery will look like. He'll spend much of this time rehabbing with the Tigers' affiliate in Lakeland, and more details on his exact return date should emerge as he progresses.
