Feb 16 2025Garrett agreed to a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays on Sunday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett joined the Angels on a minor-league deal for 2024 but had a 5.08 ERA at Triple-A Salt Lake and made just six appearances in the big leagues. The left-hander will need a strong showing in camp to make Toronto's Opening Day roster, otherwise he's likely to open the campaign at Triple-A Buffalo.
May 22 2024Garrett signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Wednesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett elected free agency Sunday after being DFA'd by the Angels, but he will now return to the organization on a minor-league deal. He will report to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he has allowed two earned runs through 7.1 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking four.
May 19 2024Garrett cleared outright waivers Sunday and elected free agency. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander was designated for assignment by the Angels on Wednesday, and he'll head to the open market rather than report to Triple-A Salt Lake. Garrett made just six appearances for the Halos and gave up three earned runs with an 11:5 K:BB over 5.1 innings.
May 15 2024The Angels designated Garrett for assignment Wednesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett will be pushed off the 40-man roster as Davis Daniel comes up from Triple-A Salt Lake to take Garrett's place in the Angels' bullpen. Since joining the active roster in late April, the 32-year-old southpaw has given up three earned runs while striking out 11 batters through 5.1 innings across six appearances. He's performed well in the minors this year and found a good amount of success last season with the Royals, so it's possible he draws interest from other teams on the waiver wire.
Apr 30 2024The Angels selected Garrett's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett signed a minor-league deal with the Angels shortly after the season began, and he's since posted a 2.45 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 7.1 innings at Triple-A. He'll join the Halos' bullpen to replace Davis Daniel, who was optioned to Salt Lake in a corresponding move.
Mar 29 2024The Angels signed Garrett to a minor-league contract Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett was cut loose by the Giants late in spring training after it was clear he wasn't going to make the big-league roster, but he's managed to quickly catch on with another organization. Garrett has struck out 138 but also walked 81 in 117.1 innings over his last three seasons.
Mar 21 2024Garrett was released by the Giants on Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett joined the Giants on a minor-league deal as spring training began and was expected to make the bullpen. However, he struggled throughout Cactus League action, allowing nine earned runs across 6.1 innings while maintaining just a 3:7 K:BB. Garrett pitched effectively with the Royals in 2023, so he may get a shot with another team around the league.
Feb 12 2024Garrett signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murray says Garrett will receive a $1.35 million salary if he's in the big leagues. The left-handed reliever holds a 5.06 ERA with 81 walks over 117.1 innings since the beginning of the 2021 season. He also has 138 strikeouts across that span, though, and is still just 31, so he seems worthy of a dice roll on a non-guaranteed deal.
Jul 25 2023Garrett signed a minor-league contract with the Guardians on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett was cut loose by the Royals earlier this month but will remain in the American League Central. The veteran left-hander has posted a 3.33 ERA but also an ugly 1.73 WHIP with 20 walks over 24.1 innings this season at the big-league level. He'll attempt to get back on track in the minors and earn another shot in Cleveland.
Jul 15 2023Garrett was released by the Royals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: No team wanted to claim Garrett and his $2.65 salary off waivers, but he'll now be free to seek out a minor-league or minimum-salary contract. His 3.33 ERA in 24.1 innings this season looks strong, but his 5.58 FIP and 5.05 SIERA tell a different story. His control has never been a strong point, but his walk rate rose to an untenable 17.9 percent this season.
Jul 9 2023The Royals designated Garrett for assignment Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett will surrender his spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster to left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (head), who was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday in Cleveland. Though Garrett posted a respectable 3.33 ERA over his 24.1 innings out of the Kansas City bullpen this season, most of his other ratios (1.73 WHIP, career-worst 7.1 K-BB%, 85.2 percent strand rate) suggested he was due for a correction in terms of run prevention. Garrett will now be exposed to waivers, though it's unclear if any of MLB's other 29 teams will be willing to put in a claim for a veteran reliever who has struggled in recent seasons and is on a $2.65 million salary for 2023.
Jul 7 2023Garrett (0-1) took the loss Thursday versus the Guardians, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out one in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett gave up solo home runs to Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor on consecutive pitches and ran into more trouble after that. Collin Snider also allowed an inherited runner to score. Garrett had pitched three consecutive scoreless innings since coming back from a month-long absence with an elbow injury. The southpaw has a decent 3.33 ERA, but his 1.73 WHIP and 28:20 K:BB through 24.1 innings suggest he could be in for more poor performances if he can't trim the walk rate. His 7.4 BB/9 is the worst mark of his career.
Jun 30 2023The Royals reinstated Garrett (elbow) from the injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett put up a 3.00 ERA and 1.76 WHIP through 21 innings before landing on the injured list in early June. Now that he's healthy again, he could be used more often in high-leverage situations after the Royals traded Aroldis Chapman to Texas on Friday.
Jun 22 2023Garrett (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett was given a timeline of 4-to-6 weeks after landing on the injured list June 2 with an elbow injury, and he appears to be trending toward the shorter end of that range. The 30-year-old lefty will presumably make a handful of appearances in the minors before returning to the Royals' bullpen in early July.
Jun 12 2023Garrett (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Monday marks the first time Garrett has thrown since an elbow injury forced him onto the 15-day injured list June 2. The 31-year-old lefty is scheduled to face hitters in a live batting practice Thursday, but it will be another few weeks before he returns to the Royals' bullpen.
Jun 2 2023Garrett (elbow) is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett was placed on the injured list Friday after being diagnosed with left elbow valgus extension overload. He underwent an injection to help reduce the irritation and will be completely shut down from throwing for at least the next week. Jackson Kowar is up from Triple-A Omaha to provide much-needed depth for the Royals' bullpen.
May 20 2023Garrett was reinstated from the family emergency list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett is back with the team after he left Wednesday to attend to a family matter. He'll return to his role in the Royals' bullpen for their series with the White Sox. Jackson Kowar was optioned to Triple-A Omaha to create space on the major-league roster for Garrett.
May 17 2023The Royals placed Garrett on the family medical emergency list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett can be on the list for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days. Kansas City called up Mike Mayers from Triple-A Omaha to replace him on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen.
May 12 2023Garrett allowed a hit and two walks and struck out two in a scoreless inning in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett exited Monday's game versus the White Sox after getting sick on the mound. He returned Wednesday and has now strong together 2.1 scoreless innings over his last three appearances. For the season, he owns a 3.24 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB over 16.2 innings. He has yet to record a result, a save or a hold, which indicates Garrett is not in the high-leverage conversation in a bullpen where closing opportunities are already limited.
May 8 2023Garrett was lifted from Monday's game against the White Sox after falling ill, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett was forced to exit the contest with one out in the top of the seventh inning. He'll be considered day-to-day moving forward.
Mar 16 2023Garrett has allowed just one walk and struck out four over four hitless innings this spring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett had a hideous 6.4 BB/9 last season, so seeing him display more control, even in Cactus League play, is encouraging. He's only a couple of years removed from being a potential closer with the Reds, but his 4.96 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 45.1 innings last year meant he mainly worked as a middle reliever. With Scott Barlow and Aroldis Chapman on the roster, Garrett's chances of closing early in the year are slim, but strong pitching could earn him ninth-inning looks as the season progresses.
Jan 13 2023Garrett signed a one-year, $2.65 million contract with the Royals on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Postt reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett's first season in Kansas City didn't go all that well, as he posted a 4.96 ERA and 49:32 K:BB over 45.1 innings. He did hold lefties to a .390 OPS, though, so new manager Matt Quatraro will have to be careful when he uses the southpaw in 2023.
Aug 28 2022Garrett retired both of the batters he faced, one via strikeout, to earn his eighth hold of the season in Sunday's 15-7 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett was making his second appearance for the Royals since completed his two-game suspension and being added back to the active roster Friday. He had a rough go out of the bullpen in Friday's 13-5 loss -- he served up four earned runs on five hits while recording just one out -- but he bounced back nicely in the series finale. For the season, Garrett owns a 4.95 ERA over 36.1 innings.
Aug 23 2022Garrett will begin serving a two-game suspension Tuesday after his ban was shortened from three games following an appeal, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett will be eligible to return for Friday's series opener against San Diego. The lefty has strung together 15 scoreless appearances, albeit with a modest 10:7 K:BB in that 13-inning span.
Aug 22 2022Garrett (3-1) struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the win Monday over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett's strong August continued in the eighth inning Monday, as he kept runs off the board for the ninth time in 10 appearances this month. The southpaw hasn't allowed an earned run since the All-Star break, giving up just one unearned run in his last 13 innings. He's posted a 10:7 K:BB in that span while adding two wins and three holds. For the season, the reliever has a 4.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 36:26 K:BB with seven holds through 35.1 innings. Garrett continues to pitch in a mid-leverage role, though he's unlikely to get many save chances since Scott Barlow has succeeded as the closer for much of the year.
Jul 26 2022Garrett (2-1) allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the win Monday over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Zack Greinke pitched five shutout innings, but the Royals didn't get on the board until the bottom of the sixth. This put Garrett in line for his first win since April 19. Through seven outings in July, Garrett owns a 5.40 ERA and 6:4 K:BB. That's not too far off from his season performance, which has seen him record a 5.92 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 27:19 K:BB in 24.1 innings. He's added four holds, but he's not currently a part of the Royals' high-leverage mix.
Jun 29 2022Garrett struck out one and walked one in 1.1 scoreless innings during Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett got the last out of the fourth inning and stayed in for the fifth after an ineffective start from Jonathan Heasley. In seven outings in June, Garrett has allowed six runs in 4.2 innings, though he's given up multiple runs in two of those appearances while giving up no runs in four. The southpaw is still struggling with consistency halfway through the year, which has seen him post a 6.38 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 21:15 K:BB across 18.1 innings. Walks have long been a problem for Garrett, but he's allowed 7.4 BB/9 this year, by far the worst mark of his career, which has wiped out the benefits of a .238 BABIP.
Jun 14 2022Garrett (1-1) allowed a run on a hit and a walk while recording a strikeout in one-third of an inning, taking the loss Monday versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett gave up a tiebreaking RBI single to Thairo Estrada in the sixth inning. Since the start of May, Garrett's yielded 11 runs in 9.1 innings, pushing his season ERA up to 6.75. He's added an 18:13 K:BB and 1.43 WHIP through 14.2 innings overall. A 3.55 FIP indicates a little bad luck for the southpaw.
Jun 12 2022Garrett (illness) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning Sunday versus the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett missed more than two weeks on the COVID-19 injured list. His return to the majors was less than impressive, as he was responsible for a two-run triple from Richie Martin and an RBI single by Cedric Mullins in the seventh inning. Garrett has a 6.28 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 17:12 K:BB across 14.1 innings overall this year, so he's likely set to pitch in a middle relief role going forward. The good news is he's yet to allow a home run in 17 appearances after giving up nine long balls in 63 outings last year.
Jun 8 2022Garrett (illness) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett has been on the COVID-19 injured list since May 26, and he'll require at least one appearance with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate before being activated. Assuming he feels good following Wednesday's outing, the southpaw will likely rejoin the major-league bullpen late this week or sometime this weekend.
Jun 5 2022Garrett (COVID-19) will likely go out on a rehab assignment before being activated from the injured list, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett has been sidelined for almost two weeks. He has been taking part in pregame work during this homestand and could come off the injured list late next week.
May 26 2022Garrett (undisclosed) was placed on the injured list Thursday without an injury designation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Royals also didn't specify which injured list he was placed on, which usually indicates the absence is related to COVID-19. Assuming Garrett is on the COVID-19 IL, he'll remain away from the team until he clears the league's testing protocols. Dylan Coleman was promoted from Triple-A Omaha to fill his spot in the bullpen.
May 19 2022Garrett was ejected from Thursday's game against the White Sox, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett had a balk called against him in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday and was tossed from the game after saying something to the umpire at second base at the end of the inning. Prior to being ejected, the southpaw allowed a hit and no walks while striking out three in one inning. Assuming he doesn't face further discipline, Garrett should be available for Friday's series opener against Minnesota.
May 9 2022Garrett pitched 1.1 scoreless and hitless innings, throwing one wild pitch and striking out two during Monday's 6-1 loss to the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett got the last out of the fifth inning and then pitched a perfect sixth in relief of starter Carlos Hernandez. Prior to Monday, Garrett had allowed three runs across his last two outings. The southpaw has a 3.38 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 8:6 K:BB in eight innings this season, and he's yet to see much high-leverage work.
Apr 19 2022Garrett (1-0) earned the victory, striking out two and walking one in 1.2 scoreless innings in a 4-3 win Tuesday over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett entered the game with the Royals losing 3-1 and one out in the fifth and quickly retired the next two batters. He pitched around a walk and a wild pitch in the sixth and, after the Royals' offense came to life, became the pitcher of record. It was the first win as a Royal for the lefty after coming to Kansas City in a trade with the Reds in March.
Mar 22 2022Garrett signed a one-year, $2.025 million contract with the Royals on Tuesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deal means Garrett won't have to square off in front of his new team in arbitration. He'll receive a raise of just over half a million dollars despite a poor 2021 season which saw him struggle to a 6.04 ERA in 63 relief appearances.
Mar 16 2022The Royals acquired Garrett from the Reds on Wednesday in exchange for lefty starter Mike Minor and cash. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kansas City is eager to get a look at some of its younger starting options in 2022, and since Minor didn't fit in with that plan, the team decided to ship him out for an upside reliever in Garrett. The 29-year-old lefty has shown flashes of brilliance since making the full-time move to the bullpen in 2018, but he's often struggled to string together extended stretches of quality appearances. Even so, in a Kansas City bullpen lacking in impact arms, Garrett will likely get a look in a late-inning setup role to begin the season. Garrett's career 26.8 K% would make him an intriguing fantasy option if he can cut down his walk and home-run rates and eventually challenge incumbent Scott Barlow for the closer's role.
Oct 1 2021Garrett (0-4) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one in one-third of an inning, taking the loss Friday versus Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw allowed two of the three batters he faced to reach base, and Michael Lorenzen allowed both of them to score. Garrett's tumultuous season seems set to end that way as well, as he's allowed six runs in his last 10.1 innings since the start of September. He owns a 6.17 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 60:29 K:BB across 46.2 innings overall, while adding seven saves and seven holds.
Jul 26 2021Garrett was activated off the paternity list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett wound up missing the standard three days while on paternity leave. The lefty has had a rather shaky season, struggling to a 6.75 ERA, but he does at least still have a strong 31.6 percent strikeout rate and is one of the team's top ninth-inning options at the moment. Alejo Lopez was optioned in a corresponding move.
Jul 23 2021Garrett was placed on the paternity list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Players typically miss three days for paternity leave. If that's the case with Garrett, he'll miss the weekend series against the Cardinals but will return for Monday's game against the Cubs.
Jul 20 2021Garrett picked up his seventh save of the season in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Mets, allowing one walk while striking out two in an inning of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett walked the first batter he faced on four pitches, but he settled in after a mound visit to strike out Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso. He then got Jeff McNeil to pop out into foul territory to secure his first save since July 4. Thanks to some early season struggles, Garrett totes a 6.75 ERA. However, the southpaw has allowed just three earned runs in his last 15 appearances.
Jul 4 2021Garrett allowed a hit and a walk but did not allow a run in two-thirds of an inning, earning the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett walked Ian Happ and allowed a single to Eric Sogard, but the left-hander was able to get Willson Contreras to ground into a double play. The save was Garrett's sixth of the year, to go with four holds and two blown saves in 34 outings. He's posted a 7.01 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 32:17 K:BB across 25.2 innings, but he hasn't allowed a run in his last 6.1 innings spanning nine appearances.
Jun 26 2021Garrett gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his fifth save of the season in a 4-1 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw continues to look more like the pitcher the Reds were expecting to lock down a high-leverage role for them this season. Over his last 10 appearances Garrett has been scored upon only once, posting a 2.84 ERA and 10:2 K:BB through 6.1 innings while racking up three saves and two holds. Despite the hot streak he still has a 7.71 ERA on the year, but with both Lucas Sims (elbow) and Tejay Antone (forearm) sidelined, Garrett figures to be the top man in the Cincy bullpen for the time being.
Jun 22 2021Garrett allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save during Tuesday's 10-7 win at Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Three Cincinnati relievers combined to allowed five runs during the eighth inning, but Garrett came out for the ninth and only surrendered a two-out single to Nelson Cruz. The left-hander still has an ugly 8.44 ERA for the season, and Tuesday's outing was was the first time in his past four appearances that he covered a full inning.
Jun 17 2021Garrett (0-2) failed to record an out and allowed a walkoff two-run home run, taking the loss Thursday versus San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ryan Hendrix was unable to protect a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, and he only got one out before Garrett entered the contest. Garrett allowed a single to Jake Cronenworth before Victor Caratini hit the walkoff homer. The lefty had gone four outings without allowing a run entering Thursday, He now has a 9.31 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 24:13 K:BB across 19.1 innings. The 29-year-old has now allowed eight homers in 25 appearances.
Jun 16 2021Garrett struck out the only batter he faced to record his third save of the season in Monday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lucas Sims worked the ninth inning before the Reds finally broke open a scoreless tie in the top of the 10th, and after Heath Hembree allowed the Brewers' designated runner to score while leaving two more runners on base, Garrett got the call and fanned Tim Lopes to end the game. The southpaw remains in the high-leverage mix for Cincy despite his 8.48 ERA and 1.66 WHIP on the year, but he's being used very sparingly, working only 2.1 innings over his current four-appearance scoreless streak.
May 31 2021Garrett threw a scoreless sixth inning Sunday against the Cubs after struggling the day before. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After seven consecutive scoreless outings, Garrett had given up runs in his last two outings earlier in the week, including a homer to Josh Bell earlier in the week when protecting a lead in the ninth. Garrett probably won't get the next Reds save chance, absent a sequence where they are facing multiple left-handers.
May 31 2021Garrett threw a scoreless sixth inning Sunday against the Cubs after struggling the day before. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After seven consecutive scoreless outings, Garrett had given up runs in his last two outings earlier in the week, including a homer to Josh Bell when protecting a lead in the ninth. Garrett probably won't get the next Reds save chance, absent a sequence where they are facing multiple left-handers.
May 16 2021Garrett (suspension) is eligible to return Sunday against the Rockies after serving his five-game suspension. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's a reasonable chance that he'll be called upon to pitch, too, after the Reds played 12 innings in Coors Field on Saturday.
May 11 2021Garrett had his seven-game suspension reduced to five following an agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. He'll begin serving the ban during Tuesday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett will be eligible to return to action during Sunday's series finale with the Rockies in Colorado. The right-hander was initially handed the seven-game suspension due to his role in a benches-clearing incident that occurred in a May 1 game against the Cubs. After a rocky start to the season that included two blown saves, Garrett has settled in nicely over his last four outings, working four scoreless innings while striking out six. Garrett's absence through Saturday should increase the odds of other high-leverage options like Lucas Sims, Tejay Antone and Sean Doolittle picking up saves.
May 4 2021Garrett will appeal the seven-game suspension he received from MLB on Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old received the ban for "inciting a benches-clearing incident" during Saturday's matchup with the Cubs. The suspension was set to begin Tuesday versus the White Sox, but Garrett will continue to be available until the appeals process is completed.
Apr 27 2021Garrett allowed a two-run homer and was charged with a blown save over just a third of an inning in Monday's 5-3 extra-inning win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett relieved Lucas Sims with two outs and a man on in the seventh, and he promptly left a hanging slider over the plate that Corey Seager crushed over the center-field fence to tie the game at 3-3. It's been a rough start to the year for the hard-throwing lefty, as he's given up 10 runs and owns an appalling 4:7 K:BB over just 6.1 innings. He may be starting to lose his grip on the closer role with Tejay Antone nearly unhittable in a setup role thus far.
Apr 21 2021Garrett allowed three earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out one to blow the save Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett entered the game in the ninth inning with a 3-0 lead. However, he blew his first save of the season after walking two of the first three batters he faced and then surrendering a three-run home run to Josh VanMeter. Garrett has now walked at least one batter in five of his six outings, which has led to disastrous results. Across 5.1 frames, he has allowed 10 earned runs, eight walks and three home runs. Garrett received a vote of confidence from manager David Bell after the game, though it wouldn't be surprising to see Lucas Sims and potentially even Sean Doolittle or Tejay Antone creep factor more heavily into the saves picture.
Apr 9 2021Garrett walked two over one scoreless inning to pick up the save against Arizona on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett came on in the 10th inning and navigated around a pair of walks to pick up his second save of the season. One of the walks was intentional, so the right-hander's control wasn't as off as a quick glance at the box score might suggest. The outing was certainly an improvement over his previous two appearances, during which Garrett yielded a combined five runs and five hits over two innings.
Apr 7 2021Garrett gave up a grand slam in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 11-4 win over the Pirates, failing to record even a strike with any of the five fastballs that he threw, giving up three hits and two balls. He ultimately struck two batters out with sliders to end the game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was a dreaded "get work" outing for Garrett, so perhaps we can cut some slack for the outing, but it'll be interesting to see what the Reds do the next time they have a save situation. When Garrett has struggled in the past, it's been with his fastball against right-handed hitters, so this bears watching.
Apr 5 2021Garrett got the save in his first outing of the season Monday night, despite allowing a solo homer to Bryan Reynolds and a subsequent single and walk, striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Garrett's first outing of the season, so one could make an allowance that he was a little rusty after getting very little work this spring. He needed 25 pitches to get through the ninth, so it's possible he might not be up on Tuesday should another save situation emerge.
Mar 27 2021Garrett will split save chances with Lucas Sims early in the season, but the Reds won't open the year with a dedicated closer, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The joint closer role may wind up being better for the right-handed Sims than for the left-handed Garrett, as Garrett will likely find himself in the ninth inning less than half the time if the Reds play the matchups. The Reds haven't said they'll avoid using a traditional closer all season, however, so Garrett could certainly surpass Sims if he outpitches his teammate early on. He's entering the regular season as hot as possible, striking out all nine batters he's faced this spring after being delayed by a bit of forearm soreness.
Mar 23 2021Garrett (forearm) struck out the side in Tuesday's spring training against the Padres, hitting 95 mph with his fastball and generating six whiffs against seven swings on his slider, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett is ahead of teammate Lucas Sims, who also pitched on Tuesday, both in terms of game action and in results so far. But the two relievers, barring any setbacks, will be the top two options at the back end of the Reds' bullpen.
Mar 21 2021Garrett (forearm) struck out the side Saturday against the Brewers in a "B" game and afterward stated that he thinks he'll be ready for Opening Day, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell gave Garrett rave reviews as well Saturday, suggesting that Garrett looked as good as ever. "Velocity, the breaking ball, he was just dominating," Bell said. It's coming down to the last two weeks to decide the closer's job, but this might be a decision that lingers into the regular season. Meanwhile, Lucas Sims pitched in an intrasquad game Sunday and will pitch in a spring training contest against the Padres on Tuesday.
Mar 18 2021Garrett (forearm) said he expects to pitch in a "B" game Saturday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett's sore left forearm checked out fine after he faced hitters in a live batting practice session Wednesday, so he'll get the opportunity to prove his health in a game setting to finish out the week. Assuming his outing Saturday goes as planned, Garrett would likely be reintegrated into the Reds' Cactus League pitching schedule. The Reds haven't yet named a closer heading into Opening Day, but with Sean Doolittle struggling mightily this spring and Lucas Sims (elbow) having also missed time, Garrett could still be the leading candidate for the job.
Mar 17 2021Garrett (forearm) will throw a live batting practice session Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett has been slowed early in spring training due to left forearm soreness but has still been throwing off flat ground and in bullpen sessions. The southpaw will face live hitters Wednesday, and he could make his Cactus League debut over the weekend if all goes well during the live BP. Garrett is a strong candidate to close out games for the Reds if he's fully healthy in time for Opening Day, but Lucas Sims (elbow) and Tejay Antone (groin) could also be in the mix for save chances.
Mar 10 2021Garrett has yet to pitch in a spring training game due to a sore left forearm, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw is not shut down entirely; he has been throwing on flat ground and is slated for a bullpen session Thursday. With Garrett and Lucas Sims (elbow) yet to pitch in a live setting, and Sean Doolittle struggling early on, the Reds' closer situation is not any clearer than it was when spring training began. Tejay Antone is in the mix as a starter, but keep in mind Antone was mentioned by manager David Bell as an internal candidate for ninth-inning work back in December when Raisel Iglesias was traded.
Jan 15 2021Garrett signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander receives a raise from the Reds in his first season of arbitration eligibility. Garrett had a 2.45 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 26:7 K:BB over 18.1 innings during 2020 and will enter spring training in competition for the closer's role following the departure of Raisel Iglesias.
Dec 16 2020Garrett is one of three current candidates to fill the vacated Reds closer job, along with Lucas Sims and Tejay Antone, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For his part, Garrett already has the confidence and desire for the job. "To me, it's mine to lose," Garrett said Tuesday. "I'm just going to go in there and take it. Not a lot of things are earned, and nothing is given. I'm just going to go and take it." Garrett is coming off of his best season, one in which he posted a 2.45 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 26 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. It wouldn't be a total shock if the Reds mixed-and-matched in the role, though he has been effective against both lefties and righties the last three years.
Sep 16 2020Garrett had one strikeout, two walks and didn't allow a hit during the ninth inning to record the save Tuesday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was called upon for the first save of his career since Raisel Iglesias and Archie Bradley were both apparently unavailable after each threw two-plus innings over the past two days. Garrett hardly made things easy, as he delivered only 13 of his 27 pitches for strikes and issued a pair of one-out walks, but he still managed to keep the Pirates off the board. He has a 2.81 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 23:5 K:BB while notching five holds across 16 innings this season.
Aug 29 2020Garrett struck out two over 1.1 innings to lock down his third hold of the season in a win over the Cubs on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett might be called upon to pitch again in Saturday's doubleheader, given that Raisel Iglesias has had to pitch two days in a row thanks to Robert Stephenson's struggles Friday. Garrett has been fantastic this season, posting a 2.45 ERA, 0.64 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 11 innings.
Jul 25 2020Garrett mowed through the three batters he faced Saturday against the Tigers in his 2020 debut, striking out two of the three batters he faced and getting five swinging strikes in his 10 pitches. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett wasn't great in spring training or summer camp, but he looked awesome Saturday while his bullpen mates struggled. The Reds aren't about to suggest a role change yet, but if they do later, Garrett is off to a good start at least.
Feb 26 2020Garrett is working on improving his four-seam fastball in spring training, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Only six of his 78 strikeouts last year came on his four-seam fastball. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett had a breakout season last year, relying heavily upon his slider, which took credit for 68 of his strikeouts last year. "I was never really into analytics, but me being honest with myself, my fastball is ... I throw hard, but hitters are able to pick it up," Garrett said. "Even though they don't do that much damage on it, I want to have my fastball to be able to put somebody away."
Aug 20 2019Garrett has been reinstated after serving his eight-game suspension for his role in a benches-clearing brawl July 30, Deb Carson of FOX Sports Radio reports.
Aug 12 2019Garrett will begin serving an eight-game suspension during Monday's series opener in Washington.
Aug 1 2019Garrett was suspended eight games for his role in Tuesday's benches-clearing incident with the Pirates, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal reports.

Jul 5 2018Garrett notched his 17th hold of the season in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the White Sox after striking out two batters in a scoreless seventh inning. The leg bruise that forced Garrett to depart early in a June 26 outing against the Braves no longer looks to be a concern, as the lefty has since made four appearances out of the bullpen, including each of the last three days. Garrett has adapted well in his move from a starting role to the bullpen this season, posting a 2.89 ERA and 52:13 K:BB over 43.2 innings.
Jun 27 2018Garrett (leg contusion) was unavailable to pitch in Wednesday's win over the Braves, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.Garrett had a wrap on his leg on Wednesday morning. With him out and with Wandy Peralta down in the minors, the Reds' only bullpen lefty Wednesday was Kyle Crockett.
Jun 26 2018Garrett exited Tuesday's game against the Braves after being hit in the left leg by a batted ball, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports.Garrettwas diagnosed with a left leg bruise after X-rays came back negative, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The 26-year-old should be considered day-to-day until he is evaluated further.
May 26 2018Garrett is still in the mix to get saves, albeit more likely in situations such as it was Thursday, where he originally came into the game in the seventh inning, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.Manager Jim Riggleman said he's using matchups to determine the role, rather than just designating a closer during Raisel Iglesias's absence. That was the case Thursday, where the Pirates had three lefties due up to start the ninth. Garrett retired one batter but then allowed a two-run homer to Austin Meadows. Had he gotten Meadows out, he would have stayed in to try to complete the save. Instead, Jared Hughes came in and closed the door against his former team.
May 23 2018Garrett could factor into the ninth-inning mix with Raisel Iglesias (biceps) landing on the disabled list Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports.Jared Hughes, David Hernandez, Wandy Peralta and Michael Lorenzen were also named as options. Garrett's stuff has played up in relief so far this year, as he now has 31 strikeouts to go with a 1.67 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 27 innings. He's been even better against right-handers than against same-handed batters, but Garrett is still largely unproved at the big-league level and that could hurt him in the eyes of interim manger Jim Riggleman. It's also possible that no one arm will emerge as the preferred option in the limited time Iglesias is out -- the injury is to his non-throwing arm.
May 6 2018The Reds activated Garrett from the bereavement list ahead of Sunday's game against the Marlins. With the late-afternoon start time for Sunday's game affording enough time for Garrett's flight to arrive in Cincinnati, the left-hander should be available out of the bullpen in the series finale after he was away from the team for three days. To make room on the active roster for Garrett, the Reds optioned reliever Tanner Rainey to Triple-A Louisville.
May 6 2018Garrett could return from the bereavement list Sunday if his flight to Cincinnati remains on schedule, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Garrett likely would not have made it for a regular start time in Cincinnati, but with Sunday's first pitch scheduled for 4:10 PM ET, there's a chance the reliever could be available. If not, look for Garrett to officially be activated in advance of Monday's matchup against the Mets.
May 3 2018Garrett was put on the bereavement list Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Garrett will be away from the team for at least three days and could miss up to a full week. The club announced that a corresponding move will be made prior to Friday's series opener against the Marlins.
Apr 24 2018Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said that Garrett will remain in the bullpen for now, though he might start eventually and could receive more work in the short term, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "We intend to get him out there a lot more," Riggleman said Monday. "The more he can get out there to repeat that delivery, I think he's going to be that much better."Riggleman suggested that extra work could come in the form of longer outings. "He could end up going as much as three [innings in relief]. Once a guy has gone three, he could go four and five," Riggleman said. "It wouldn't take any time to stretch him out. In today's world, we talk about stretching people out, but not many of them go past five or 5 1/3 [innings] anyway."
Apr 16 2018Cincinnati has no plans to use Garrett in his previous role as starter and will continue to use him as a reliable option out of the bullpen, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Garrett is yet to allow a run and has recorded 10 strikeouts across 8.1 innings out of the bullpen to open the 2018 season. Manager Bryan Price will continue to use the 25-year-old as a reliever, especially with Michael Lorenzen (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list. Garrett will remain an option for a spot start if need be and could find himself in the starting rotation if an injury should occur.
Mar 29 2018Garrett will not start Tuesday against the Cubs, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports.Thursday's rainout seemed to open the door for Garrett, who put together a great spring with six earned runs allowed and a 21:4 K:BB in 17 Cactus League innings. However, the team has decided to turn to Cody Reed for that start instead, leaving Garrett to fill a long role out of the bullpen for the time being. Given the questions marks in the Reds' rotation, it seems likely that Garrett will find his way into double-digit starts this season.
Mar 28 2018Garrett could start Tuesday against the Cubs now that the Reds will need a fifth starter that day, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports. The Reds were originally lined up to not need a fifth starter to open the season, as Opening Day starter Homer Bailey could have pitched Tuesday on full rest. With Thursday's opener being postponed due to rain, Bailey will now start Friday instead and will be unable to pitch again on Tuesday. Garrett, who enjoyed a strong spring with a 3.18 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 17 innings, was set to open the season in the bullpen, but now appears to be the most likely candidate to start that game.
Mar 25 2018Garrett will begin the season in the Reds' bullpen, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Garrett has enjoyed a strong spring with a 3.18 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 17 frames to put himself in contention for a back-end rotation spot, but manager Bryan Price said Sunday that he thinks the lefty may be better served out of the bullpen, where he can pitch more aggressively while mixing his slider, fastball and changeup. On other hand, Price said that Garrett starting isn't "off the board," so the 25-year-old could get another look in that capacity later this season if the Reds' initial rotation options should falter or get hurt.
Mar 19 2018Garrett had another strong outing Sunday against the Diamondbacks, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing just one infield hit with no walks, striking out four. Reds manager Bryan Price was complimentary about Garrett's performance, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "I thought he had better stuff than most of his previous outings before today," Price said. "Today, he was a little lateral and wasn't behind the ball quite as well. But, he found a way to manage the game without his best command. That, to me, says a lot about where he is with his confidence and his ability to compete his way through some of the challenges."Price has not tipped his hand about who has won rotation spots with the team, or what the Reds would do if Garrett was not in the rotation. Some of that is due to the uncertainty of Brandon Finnegan's status - if he can't answer the Opening Day bell, there could be three open spots. The consensus point of view is that Garrett remains behind Sal Romano and Tyler Mahle, but that might be more attributable where each pitcher began the spring.
Mar 14 2018Garrett is getting his first spring training start Sunday against the Diamondbacks, MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports.Garrett has been one of the better stories coming out of camp for the Reds this spring. That he's starting on Sunday doesn't necessarily mean that the Reds are going to put him higher in their rotation depth chart, but there's a lot in flux with that rotation right now.
Mar 13 2018Garrett threw two more scoreless innings Monday against the Angels, albeit without any strikeouts. He allowed two hits and no walks. Though he entered the game in relief, he still faced the starting Angels' hitters. With the outing Garrett lowered his spring training ERA to 2.00 with a 0.78 WHIP. He has a 11:2 K:BB over nine innings and has added three mph to his average fastball so far. He was originally fighting for a bullpen spot at the beginning of spring, but it's possible that he could begin the year in the rotation thanks to his performance so far, plus the injuries to Anthony DeSclafani and Brandon Finnegan.
Feb 26 2018Garrett retired all six batters he faced in his spring training debut Sunday, striking out four, drawing the attention of manager Bryan Price, the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reports. "Amir was as good as I've ever seen him," Price said. "He had velocity with command and threw the slider and changeup for strikes. He was filthy. That's the type of performance you want to see from a guy that's coming off of a tough season. He came out. He was snorting fire and attacked the zone. It was one of those dare-to-be-noticed moments because he was a standout, an absolute standout."The big takeaway from Garrett's performance was how strong his fastball looked, after his fastball was his weakest pitch last season. He still has an uphill battle to win a rotation spot and certainly can't win it on the basis of one spring training outing, but all in all it's better that it was a good outing for him.
Feb 15 2018Garrett (hip) is being limited during fielding drills and running for precautionary reasons, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.Garrett had platelet-rich plasma and stem-cell injections over the offseason, so the Reds are taking it nice-and-slow at the beginning of camp. This shouldn't put him behind in his quest to win a roster spot, but he's in an uphill battle to make the Opening Day roster on his own merits.
Jan 26 2018Garrett had a procedure on his right hip that included platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem-cell injections over the offseason, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports. "It helped a lot. I feel a lot stronger and stuff now. The good thing about that was I didn't have to miss any time," Garrett said. "I just needed to get healthy all the way, that's it. I've been working on my body, and I'm down 10 pounds now. I feel like I'm back to my old self."The injury dates back to late May 2017, and Garrett really struggled after returning from the DL. He's in the midst of a battle for maybe one remaining rotation spot with the Reds, depending on the health of Anthony DeSclafani and Brandon Finnegan. If this hip injury was a primary contributor to Garrett's struggles, his outlook might be more optimistic than initially envisioned.

Sep 16 2017Garrett has been removed from the Reds' starting rotation, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It's not entirely clear if Garrett will be shut down, like the Reds are doing with Tyler Mahle, or if he will transition to the bullpen for the final few weeks, but it's largely moot for fantasy purposes. Garrett began his career with three straight quality starts, but he's struggled mightily since. His ERA now up at 7.49 over 67.1 innings after his sixth straight loss Thursday.
Sep 14 2017Garrett (3-8) allowed four runs on three hits and five walks while striking out seven over four innings in a losing effort against the Cardinals on Thursday. The lefty has been on the losing end of both starts since his return from the minors, and he's dropped six straight decisions dating back to May. Garrett has issued seven free passes and served up four homers in nine innings this month, which is of course a dangerous combination, and the homer issues may only be amplified once the Reds return home. He continues to profile as a back-end starter or bullpen arm long term.
Sep 8 2017Garrett (3-7) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five across five innings to take the loss Friday against the Mets.Garrett allowed all four of his runs via the gopher ball while he didn't receive any run support, and as a result, he dropped his seventh decision of the campaign. despite a 7.39 ERA, he's expected to finish the season in the starting rotation. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Cardinals.
Sep 7 2017Garrett will start Friday's game against the Mets, Mark Schmetzer of the Dayton Daily News reports.Garrett, who was recalled Tuesday following the conclusion of his season with Triple-A Louisville, is expected to stick in the Reds' rotation the rest of the season after the team elected to shut down staff ace Luis Castillo due to workload concerns following his dominant outing Wednesday against the Brewers. Though he opened the season as a member of the big-league rotation and performed brilliantly through his first three outings, Garrett failed to recapture that success in his subsequent nine appearances with the Reds, producing a 10.24 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in 38.2 innings. Garrett didn't see his results improve much while spending most of the second half with Louisville, so he'll likely be a high-risk streaming option throughout the season's final month, even in seemingly favorable matchups.
Sep 6 2017Garrett was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.Garrett will join the rotation next week, taking the place of Luis Castillo, who is starting Wednesday's contest against the Brewers. Although Garrett hasn't pitched in a major-league game since June, he's accumulated 12 starts for the Reds this year, posting a 7.41 ERA and 1.56 WHIP, and a 49:29 K:BB in 58.1 innings. The 25-year-old went seven scoreless innings, while adding 10 strikeouts, during his latest outing with Louisville, and could remain in the rotation throughout the rest of the 2017 season.
Jun 20 2017Garrett (3-6) gave up six runs on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings while striking out three in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Rays. Two of those hits left the yard, marking the fifth time in his last nine starts that Garrett has allowed multiple walks and homers in the same game -- a volatile combination, at best. The rookie left-hander will take a 7.41 ERA into his next outing Monday on the road against the Cardinals.
Jun 14 2017Garrett pitched six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks, with eight strikeouts in Wednesday's loss in San Diego.Garrett finally broke a streak of downright awful starts, pitching six strong innings against San Diego. Prior to Wednesday's no-decision, the Reds rookie hurler had allowed 23 earned runs in 12.2 innings over four starts (16.34 ERA), being tagged with the loss three times. He'll look to continue the turnaround against the Rays on Tuesday.
Jun 14 2017Garrett (hand) will make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Padres, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. The young left-hander was struck in the hand by a line drive in his previous start, but it seems that his hand contusion isn't bad enough to warrant skipping his start. He'll face off with San Diego righty Jhoulys Chacin in the series finale.
Jun 9 2017Garrett was diagnosed with a left hand contusion after X-rays came back negative Friday night.Garrett suffered the injury in the second inning of Friday's game against Los Angeles when he attempted to field a line drive with his pitching hand. Luckily, all he has is a bruise, but at this point he should be considered questionable for his next start.
Jun 9 2017Garrett was forced to leave Friday's game against the Dodgers in the second inning after he was struck by a line drive.Garrett attempted to catch a comeback with his pitching hand. He attempted to return to the game and made some warmup pitches, but he was unable to continue in the end. Consider Garrett day-to-day until the team is able to conduct further evaluation on his hand.
Jun 4 2017Garrett (3-4) allowed nine runs -- eight earned -- on seven hits and three walks over just 2.2 innings during Sunday's loss to Atlanta.Garrett has now allowed 22 runs through 11.2 innings over his past three starts, which includes nine home runs. Opponents are squaring him up like it's batting practice, and the rookie clearly needs additional fine-tuning in the minors. He's off the fantasy radar until he proves otherwise, and it would be surprising to see him take his next turn in the rotation against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.
Jun 4 2017Garrett (hip) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and will take the mound against the Braves on Sunday.Garrett had been sidelined with right hip inflammation since May 25 but was only forced to miss the minimum 10 days. The young lefty is set to face off against a Braves team void of regulars Brandon Phillips and Nick Markakis from Sunday's starting lineup.
Jun 3 2017Garrett (hip) will come off the DL to start Sunday's game against the Braves, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Unlike earlier in the year when the Reds brought Garrett back against the Cubs on the road, he will be afforded a comfy landing spot against a sluggish Braves lineup. However, his 9.24 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 14 strikeouts over his last five starts (25.1 innings) should be enough to scare off owners in the majority of formats, regardless of the favorable matchup. He takes Lisalverto Bonilla's spot in the rotation.
Jun 2 2017Reds' manager Bryan Price said he expects Garrett (hip) to return to the rotation during next week's series against the Cardinals, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Garrett, out since May 25 with right hip inflammation, is eligible to return from the DL on Sunday, but the Reds will continue to monitor the young pitcher over the weekend. Initial reports have been positive from the recovery standpoint, however. Garrett threw a successful bullpen session Thursday and played long toss Friday. "I feel I'm ready to go," he said. "I felt like myself and that's a step in the right direction." The southpaw said his hip had been affecting his delivery -- as evidenced by his 13.00 ERA over his last two starts -- but it appears he'll have a chance to get back to work within the next week.
May 25 2017Garrett was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with right hip inflammation. The southpaw teased tantalizing upside early in the year but has fallen back to earth with a 6.00 ERA over eight starts. The Reds have planned on monitoring Garrett's workload as the former two-sport athlete continues to develop his baseball acumen, but he'll have to wait for his next chance as he goes on the mend.
May 23 2017Garrett (3-4) allowed seven runs on seven hits and one walk across five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Indians. He struck out two.Garrett was primarily a victim of the long ball in this one, allowing four home runs to account for five of the runs charged to his record. His struggles can be partially attributed to getting behind in the count, as he struggled to find the strike zone at times and became predictable to the formidable offense he faced. Garrett was sent down to Triple-A Louisville earlier this month in an attempt to keep him fresh, but he has been battered to the tune of 13 earned runs in nine innings since returning. He is currently slated to start Sunday against the Phillies, but another outing of this nature could cause the club to rethink their immediate plans for the left-hander.
May 18 2017Garrett (3-3) allowed six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five batters through just four innings during Thursday's loss to the Cubs. This was a daunting matchup for the rookie lefty, and with Chicago scoring 16 runs through the first two games of the series, the Cubs kept it rolling early in Thursday's game. Garrett has flashed tremendous upside, but he's also had a couple rough outings. For the season, the freshman sports a 5.18 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 7.4 K/9. Being selective with his matchups going forward is likely the best approach to utilizing Garrett. If he sticks in the rotation, Garrett projects to make his next start against Cleveland, which will be another difficult test.
May 18 2017The Reds recalled Garrett from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. The southpaw was sent down on May 7 as the Reds continue an effort to manage his major-league innings. Garrett made just one appearance with the Bats, striking out every batter he faced in two frames last Friday. The Cubs pose a legit threat, which could pile on Garrett's recent growing pains that ballooned his ERA to 4.25. The former two-sport athlete is a fine pickup in deep mixed leagues, though, as a matchup play for better spots.
