Oct 1 2021Castillo (personal) allowed a run on six hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Pittsburgh on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was strong in his last start of the season, and he also recorded Cincinnati's only hit against Pittsburgh starter Wil Crowe. Castillo gave up just 10 runs (eight earned) across 30.2 innings in his last five starts this year. An ugly start to the year left his ratios a little bloated with a 3.98 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 192:75 K:BB across 187.2 innings, but he was able to finish strong. The 28-year-old is a free agent this offseason.
Sep 30 2021Castillo (personal) was activated from the family medical emergency list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo will start Friday's game against the Pirates, and he'll rejoin the active roster a day before the matchup. The right-hander has posted quality starts in each of his last two appearances and has recorded a 1.46 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 12.1 innings during that time.
Sep 27 2021Castillo will return from the bereavement list to start Friday against Pittsburgh, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds will likely have little to play for at that point, as a single loss by them or a single win by the Cardinals over the final week will eliminate them from playoff contention. Castillo himself has something to play for, however, as he can drag his ERA under 4.00 if he throws at least five innings while giving up no more than one run or at least seven innings while giving up no more than two. That's not much of an achievement for a pitcher of Castillo's talent level, but it would be quite an impressive feat for a pitcher who ended May with a 7.22 ERA.
Sep 23 2021Castillo (9-15) allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six across six innings, taking the loss to the Nationals on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo surrendered a solo home run to Juan Soto in the sixth inning and he didn't receive any run support from his offense. After struggling for much of the season, Castillo is averaging less than two runs allowed per start over his last seven outings. The 28-year-old has a 4.05 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 187 punchouts in 182.1 innings this season.
Sep 22 2021Castillo and the Reds won't face the Pirates on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will make up the contest next Monday, the lone mutual off day remaining in their respective 2021 schedules. In light of the postponement, expect Cincinnati to simply move all members of its five-man rotation back a day in the pitching schedule. Castillo will line up to make his next start in Thursday's series opener versus the Nationals at home.
Sep 18 2021Castillo (8-15) came up huge against the Dodgers on Friday night, shutting them out over 6.1 innings. He struck out 10 in the game while giving up five hits and issuing two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The fact that Castillo did this against the Dodgers, and with the Dodgers having Walker Buehler on the mound, makes this outing even more impressive. Castillo's ERA dropped to 4.08 on the season with this outing. He'll have a chance to bring that mark below 4.00 in his next outing.
Sep 11 2021Castillo hurled seven innings against St. Louis on Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was staked to a four-run lead after three innings, but the Cardinals touched him up for a pair of runs in each of the third and sixth frames to erase the deficit. Castillo's streak of five straight quality starts was consequently snapped, though he did tie his season-high mark by completing seven innings. The 28-year-old hasn't taken a loss since Aug. 14, and he has brought an ERA that stood at 7.61 after 10 starts this season down to a respectable 4.24. Castillo's next outing is tentatively scheduled for Friday at home against the Dodgers.
Sep 6 2021Castillo (7-15) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Tigers after allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while fanning seven across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo tossed his fifth straight quality start but has been unable to deliver many wins in that span, going 1-4 with a 2.81 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP across 32 innings through that stretch. Castillo endured a slow start to the season but has picked things up of late and has allowed more than three earned runs just once since the beginning of June.
Aug 30 2021Castillo (7-14) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Monday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo got off to a rough start, giving up a two-run shot to Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning. He managed to keep the Cardinals off the board over the next four innings before Tyler O'Neill poked an RBI single in the sixth. He's been hit with a loss in four of his last five outings with a 5.22 ERA during that span. Castillo will carry a 4.30 ERA into this weekend's projected home start against the Tigers.
Aug 25 2021Castillo (7-13) allowed two runs over 6.1 innings Wednesday night against the Brewers, striking out six while giving up four hits and two walks. Alas, opposing pitcher Brandon Woodruff was better, shutting the Reds out over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Once again, Castillo was firing on all cylinders, hitting 99 mph on his fastball, and getting results with his changeup, which he threw 37 times, according to MLB.com's Mark Sheldon. Castillo is projected to start next against the Cardinals at home.
Aug 20 2021Castillo (7-12) allowed one earned run on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven across seven innings, earning the win over the Marlins on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo's one run against him came in the fourth inning on a Jorge Alfaro single. He allowed just one extra-base hit through seven innings. Over his last seven outings, six have been quality starts. He carries a 4.35 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with 145 strikeouts in 144.2 innings. His next start is projected to be on Wednesday in Milwaukee.
Aug 14 2021Castillo (6-12) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings as the Reds were downed 6-1 by the Phillies. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander delivered his fifth quality start in his last six outings and 12th of the season, but the Cincy offense didn't even manage a hit until the eighth inning, giving Castillo no margin for error. He'll carry a 4.51 ERA and 138:59 K:BB through 137.2 innings into his next start.
Aug 4 2021Castillo (6-10) allowed one run on six hits and a walk in six innings, striking out seven and earning the win in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only damage Minnesota mustered against Castillo was a first-inning home run by Jorge Polanco. With Wednesday's performance, the righty has a 5-2 record, 1.94 ERA and 10 quality starts in 12 outings since the beginning of June. On May 29, Castillo had taken his seventh consecutive loss and had an ERA of 7.22. Though it took a couple months for him to get there, the 28-year-old has blossomed into the dominant ace he was expected to be this season. Castillo will bring a 4.09 ERA and 1.39 WHIP into his next start Monday in Cleveland.
Jul 30 2021Castillo (5-10) earned the win Thursday against the Cubs after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning eight across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo has been nothing short of dominant in recent weeks, and he hurled his ninth quality start in 11 appearances since the beginning of June. The right-hander, who endured a tough start to the campaign, has won his last two decisions and owns a 1.95 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through that 11-game stretch.
Jul 24 2021Castillo (4-10) earned the win over St. Louis on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out nine across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo fell behind by a run in the second inning, but that ended up being the only score the Cardinals could muster against the right-hander in the contest. Castillo registered an impressive 23 swings-and-misses in the outing and finished with his highest strikeout total since May 18. He has allowed one or zero runs in six of his past eight outings, bringing his ERA down from 6.47 to 4.20 over that stretch. His next start is expected to take place in Chicago against the Cubs on Thursday.
Jul 17 2021Castillo tossed six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and three walks with eight strikeouts Saturday against Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo turned in his sixth quality start in his last seven outings, logging his best strikeout total since May 18 in the process. A lack of run support kept his record at a dismal 2-10, but Castillo has completely turned his season around since the start of June, spinning a 1.76 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 56.1 innings over his last nine starts. He's slated to face the Cubs at Wrigley field next week.
Jul 11 2021Castillo allowed one run on six walks and three hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's win over Milwaukee. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo struggled with his command all day, needing 102 pitches (55 strikes) to get through 5.1 frames. He left with a 1-0 lead but Amir Garrett let an inherited runner score to tie things up in the sixth. Castillo had finished at least six innings in his previous five starts and has failed to factor in the decision in three straight outings. He lowered his ERA to 4.65 through 102.2 innings.
Jul 6 2021Castillo allowed a run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings, but he took a no-decision versus Kansas City on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only blemish on Castillo's line was a Michael Taylor solo home run, but Cincinnati's bullpen blew a five-run lead in the final two innings. Since the start of June, Castillo has posted quality starts in six of his last seven outings. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.81 with a 1.40 WHIP and 90:39 K:BB through 97.1 innings overall. His last start of the first half is expected to come this weekend in Milwaukee.
Jul 2 2021Castillo allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six across 6.1 innings in the win over the Padres on Thursday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo shut out the Padres through four innings before allowing one run in the fifth inning and a pair in the seventh inning. The 28-year-old has a 2.30 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP with five quality starts over his last seven appearances. However, prior to those seven starts, he had a 7.22 ERA in her first 11 starts. He will look to continue his recent success in his next start, scheduled for Tuesday against Kansas City.
Jun 26 2021Castillo (3-10) picked up the win in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Atlanta, allowing six hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander finally appears to have turned the corner after his rough beginning to the season. Castillo has delivered quality starts in four of his last five trips to the mound, blanking the opposition in two of them, and he sports a 1.71 ERA and 32:12 K:BB through 31.2 innings over that stretch.
Jun 21 2021Castillo (2-10) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out seven over six innings as he took the loss to the Padres on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs Castillo gave up came off one swing. Wil Myers came up with two men on in the third and cleared the bases with a triple off the right field wall. He ended up scoring on the play due to a throwing error when the Reds tried to get him out stretching for three. Castillo pitched well enough for the win but will now stand at 10 losses after a horrible first two months of the season. He's rebounded well over his last four starts with a 2.19 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB over 24.2 innings. The 28-year-old currently lines up to pitch against Atlanta over the weekend.
Jun 16 2021Castillo didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Brewers, allowing three hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was one of the right-hander's best performances of the season as he threw 64 of 109 pitches for strikes, but neither team was able to put runs on the board until the 10th inning, denying Castillo a win for his efforts. It was only his third quality start of the year, but two of them have come in three June trips to the mound as he's showing signs of putting his poor first couple of months behind him. Over those three outings, Castillo has a 1.93 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB through 18.2 innings.
Jun 10 2021Castillo (2-9) was charged with the loss against the Brewers on Thursday after allowing three runs on one hit and three walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't the cleanest first inning for Castillo, who opened the game by hitting a batter while also issuing a walk and giving up an RBI single to Avisail Garcia. The right-hander responded well, however, retiring 11 straight and pitching a 0-2 count on seven of his 15 hitters faced before heading into a 37-minute rain delay after the fourth. Upon returning, Castillo retired four more batters before running into trouble. After the 28-year-old issued two walks and worked for a 10-pitch strikeout, he was pulled in favor of Lucas Sims, who allowed both inherited runners to score. On the season, Castillo has compiled a 6.47 ERA and 1.58 WHIP. He lines up to get another chance with the Brewers on the road next week.
Jun 4 2021Castillo (2-8) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over six innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only run to score on Castillo came on a solo shot by Edmundo Sosa in the fifth inning as he produced his best outing in over a month. He had lost his previous seven starts entering Friday's contest, registering a 7.91 ERA through 33 frames during that span. The 28-year-old righty picked up his first win since April 7 and lowered his season ERA to 6.63. Castillo is projected to face the Brewers at home next week.
May 29 2021Castillo (1-8) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Cubs after giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks while fanning three across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo has found himself at the losing end in each of his last seven outings and has given up at least four runs in all but two of those appearances, so he's clearly moving in the wrong direction. The right-hander has posted a 7.22 ERA and will try to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for next week against the Cardinals on the road.
May 23 2021Castillo (1-7) got the loss Sunday against the Brewers, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over five innings, striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an encouraging outing against the Giants on Tuesday, this outing wiped out that progress. The Brewers jumped on him early, scoring three runs in the first inning, an inning that continues to be a problem for him. He generated 13 whiffs on 44 swings.
May 18 2021Castillo (1-6) recorded 11 strikeouts but was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Giants after giving up three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old posted double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season while notching 21 swinging strikes, but he had trouble keeping San Francisco off the basepaths and leads the National League with six losses. Castillo has a 7.44 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB across 42.1 innings, and he's allowed fewer than three earned runs in only two of nine starts.
May 13 2021Castillo (1-5) was charged with the loss against the Rockies on Thursday after surrendering eight runs on 10 hits and a pair of walks while striking out three across 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There isn't much positivity to pull away from this one. Castillo simply couldn't pull it together at hitter-happy Coors Field. He has now allowed four or more earned runs in five of his eight starts this season while serving up 18 earned runs over his last three starts against the Rockies. The right-hander will look to turn things around Tuesday against the Giants.
May 9 2021Castillo is struggling with his changeup and has adjusted his gameplan to throw the pitch less often, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "What I've seen is about 70% of my pitches are staying in the zone," Castillo said through team interpreter Jorge Merlos. "I'm definitely noticing that and I'm definitely focusing on that, too. What I'm trying to do now is pitch lower so that way we can get more swings and misses and more ground balls." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo's out pitch is his changeup, so it's obviously a big concern when it's not on. He threw 24 changeups against Cleveland on Saturday, drawing 17 swings and only one whiff. It follows that he had only two strikeouts in the short start, with neither of the K's coming on the changeup. Alas, his next start is in Coors Field this week, making it less likely that he fixes his early-season woes.
May 8 2021Castillo (1-4) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks over four innings as the Reds fell 9-2 to Cleveland. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw 57 of 84 pitches before getting the hook, as Castillo failed to last six innings for the fifth straight start. His ERA now stands at 6.42 -- exactly double last year's mark -- and he'll take a disappointing 26:10 K:BB through 33.2 innings into his next outing.
May 2 2021Castillo (1-3) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Cubs. He gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk while fanning five across 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo has now lost two outings in a row and continues to look underwhelming, as he has given up three or more earned runs in four of his six appearances to date. This translates to an inflated 6.07 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP -- two figures that would be career-worst marks for the right-hander. He's expected to take the ball next week against Cleveland on the road.
Apr 25 2021Castillo (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out three and taking the loss against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo quickly fell behind 1-0 in the first inning and things didn't get much better. He allowed two solo home runs to Tyler O'Neill in the second and fifth innings before Dylan Carlson made it 4-0 with an RBI single. The 28-year-old has now allowed at least four runs in three of his five starts this season. Castillo will carry a 6.29 ERA into next weekend's home outing against the Cubs.
Apr 22 2021Castillo did not factor into the decision, allowing one earned run on seven hits and three walks in four innings while striking out four in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to Arizona, a completion of Tuesday's suspended game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has fallen short of expectations so far this season, pitching to a 6.05 ERA and allowing three home runs along with six walks. Opposing batters hit .233 against Castillo last year, but that number has risen to .317 through four 2021 starts. Despite his early struggles, the 28-year-old boasts the elite stuff to turn things around in his fifth season and justify the high price fantasy managers paid to roster him.
Apr 13 2021Castillo allowed four runs on seven hits -- including two home runs -- over five innings in a no-decision against the Giants on Tuesday. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds staked Castillo to a four-run lead before he took the mound, but the right-hander gave it all back in the bottom of the frame on a pair of two-run homers. Castillo was good the rest of the way and now has a 12:1 K:BB in his last two starts, indicating he's turned the page on his Opening Day blowup. Castillo would be on normal rest Sunday, but Sonny Gray (back) is due to return this weekend and the Reds haven't given any indication they might skip someone, so expect Castillo's next start to come next Tuesday at home against the Diamondbacks.
Apr 7 2021Castillo (1-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Pirates after allowing four hits and one walk with five strikeouts across seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pounded the strike zone and delivered 61 of 81 pitches for strikes in an efficient performance Wednesday, which is a welcome sight after he surrendered eight earned runs to the Cardinals on Opening Day. Castillo next lines up to take the mound Tuesday at San Francisco.
Mar 19 2021Castillo will start Opening Day against the Cardinals on April 1, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo had a brief delay this spring due to visa issues, but he's had plenty of time to build up during Cactus League games. Manager David Bell confirmed Friday that Castillo will take the mound for the Reds during the first game of the season after posting a 3.21 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 70 innings during 12 starts last season.
Mar 8 2021Castillo face live hitting in batting practice for the first time this spring Monday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo reported to camp late due to visa issues coming from the Dominican Republic. Castillo is expected to get his first spring training game action of the season on Friday.
Jan 17 2021Reds GM Nick Krall issued a statement suggesting that rumors of Castillo being traded to the Yankees was 'completely false,' Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "[The rumors] are completely false," Krall texted. "We intend to have [Castillo] as a member of our rotation for 2021." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Krall has asserted that he'll listen to offers for nearly everyone, it doesn't really make sense to trade Castillo, absent an overwhelming package. He's only making $4.2 million with the Reds in 2021 and won't become a free agent for another three seasons.
Jan 15 2021Castillo signed a one-year, $4.2 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is in his first year of arbitration eligibility, so the $4.2 million is still a significant figure despite him still being underpaid. Castillo had a 3.21 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 89:24 K:BB over 70 innings last season, and he should sit at the top of Cincinnati's rotation in 2021 alongside Sonny Gray.
Oct 2 2020Castillo struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Thursday, allowing just one run on six hits and a walk, but he picked up the loss thanks to an even better performance from Atlanta starter Ian Anderson. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds got some strong pitching performances during their very brief time in the playoffs, but they failed to score a single run in 22 innings across their two losses. Castillo looked quite good in his first career postseason outing, allowing only an RBI double to Ronald Acuna in the fifth inning, but one run proved to be more than his teammates could manage. Still, the strong postseason debut caps off a good campaign for the 27-year-old righty, who cruised to a 3.21 ERA and a career-best 2.65 FIP in his 12 starts this season.
Sep 26 2020Castillo (4-6) allowed four runs on six hits over four innings in a loss to the Twins on Saturday. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo had a bit of a letdown performance after the Reds clinched a postseason berth Friday night. He allowed four extra-base hits (all doubles), the most he's allowed in a start this season, but Castillo was smiling throughout and seemed just fine, albeit not completely dialed in. The win-loss record does not do Castillo's 2020 regular season justice -- he was one of the best pitchers in the National League by any other measure. The right-hander lines up to start Game 2 for Cincinnati in the wild-card round.
Sep 21 2020Castillo (4-5) picked up the win Monday against the Brewers, allowing one run on four hits and three walks across 6.2 innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo was sharp once again Monday, with his lone hiccup being a solo shot by Jedd Gyorko in the fifth. The right-hander has won each of his last four starts, punching out 33 while allowing just four runs across 28.2 frames. After starting the campaign 0-5, Castillo will have a chance to even his record when he takes the ball Saturday in Minnesota.
Sep 16 2020Castillo (3-5) allowed three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a win over the Pirates on Wednesday. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander put the team on his back once again after going the distance his last time out. He induced 18 swinging strikes on 91 pitches en route to his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season, and now has a 1.23 ERA and 24:6 K:BB in his last three starts. Castillo endured some tough luck early and did not get much support from his teammates, but the surface numbers are finally starting to match up to his underlying dominance. He lines up to start Tuesday at home against the Brewers and could potentially go again the final day of the regular season, Sept. 27 at Minnesota, if the Reds are still in it.
Sep 11 2020Castillo (2-5) pitched a nine-inning complete game, allowing a run on two hits and three walks while striking out six in Friday's win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo emptied the tank in this game, throwing 112 pitches (73 strikes) while allowing just one extra-base hit. The only run he allowed happened in the second inning when Matt Carpenter's groundout allowed Brad Miller to score. Castillo's put together good outings in each of his last two starts. He now has a 3.44 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 66:20 K:BB across 52.1 innings this season. The right-hander is expected to face the Pirates on Wednesday in his next start.
Sep 4 2020Castillo (1-5) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings as he earned the win in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo has been dominant at forcing strikeouts this season, but he's struggled to limit run production. As a result, he was charged with losses in five of his last six starts. However, he took advantage of the struggling Pirates in Friday's matinee to enter the win column for the first time this season. The right-hander now carries a 3.95 ERA and 60:17 K:BB over 43.1 innings in 2020. His next start should come on the road Thursday against the Cubs.
Aug 25 2020Castillo (0-4) was charged with three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings in a loss to the Brewers on Tuesday. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo was quite good, but he was let down not only by his offense (again), but by his defense as well. Joey Votto misfired a throw to second base as he tried to turn two in the fourth inning, and that error led to the Brewers scoring all three of their runs in the game. Castillo is a perfect example of the limitations of win-loss record and ERA; he is winless with a 4.18 ERA, but Castillo has a 45:14 K:BB and only one homer allowed, fueling one of the best FIPs among MLB starters. The Reds will look to finally get him into the win column Sunday at home against the Cubs.
Aug 19 2020Castillo (0-3) was charged with four runs (three earned) on five hits over 3.1 innings in a loss to the Royals in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. He struck out five and walked two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start in eight days after the team's COVID-19 scare, Castillo was not particularly sharp. He needed 35 pitches to get through the first frame and ended up recording only 10 outs on 89 pitches. The right-hander has made two starts against Kansas City and two against Detroit and yet remains winless on the year. Everything checks out just fine in the peripherals and Castillo should still be considered a top-15 starting pitcher in the NL, even if he's been the third-best starter on his own team to this point. Next week he gets the Brewers in Milwaukee and then the Cubs at home.
Aug 11 2020Castillo gave up three runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks over six innings during Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Royals. He had five strikeouts and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander wasn't exactly dominant with his lowest strikeout total of the season, but he exited in line for the win before Cincinnati's bullpen surrendered two runs in the eighth inning. Castillo has a 3.91 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 31:6 K:BB through four starts (23 innings) and has a favorable matchup versus the Pirates on Sunday.
Aug 6 2020Castillo (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out nine over five innings in a loss to Cleveland on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jose Ramirez turned around a 3-2 fastball in the first inning against Castillo, and the right-hander was more generous with the free passes than he was in his first two starts. However, this was far from a bad performance; Castillo just got no support from his teammates. The Reds were shut out once again and have scored a total of seven runs in the three games Castillo has started. He will look to finally get in the win column next week at home against the Royals.
Aug 1 2020Castillo (0-1) allowed five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six over six innings in a loss to the Tigers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell let Castillo begin the seventh inning, and while that decision was justified, it backfired. Detroit got to Castillo for three straight singles before he was pulled and extended a one-run lead to a three-run lead in the frame. Castillo appeared primed for a hot start with two straight matchups against the Tigers to begin the season, but he has a 4.50 ERA and a zero in the win column. A 17:2 K:BB portends good things to come, though he's going to face stiffer competition his next time out with a road matchup in Cleveland on the docket.
Jul 30 2020Castillo will start Friday's game against the Tigers after Thursday's contest against the Cubs was postponed due to rain, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With rain pushing the right-hander's start back a day, Castillo will have a chance to try and replicate the dominant outing he logged against Detroit in his last start. Castillo punched-out 11 TIgers while allowing just one run in six innings of work in his season debut last Saturday.
Jul 25 2020Castillo allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out 11 over six innings in a no-decision against the Tigers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo was brilliant -- he induced a whopping 24 swinging strikes on 91 pitches -- but had to sit back and watch as the Reds' bullpen gave up five runs to blow the lead. Pitching half his games in Great American Ball Park is a hindrance, but Castillo's fastball-changeup combo is one of the best in the game and it would be a surprise if he's not among the NL strikeout leaders when its all said and done. He lines up for a home start against the Cubs next week.
Jul 4 2020Because he's been doing individual workouts at Great American Ballpark since May, Castillo is confident that he can ramp up quickly for Opening day, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. "Right now, because I've been here such a long time and doing all of my bullpen sessions, I think I could go out and pitch 6-7 innings," Castillo said Saturday via translator Jorge Merlos on a Zoom call. "That's how good I feel right now. I'm perfectly OK to do so." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's likely to be a wide amount of variance in each player's preparedness after this three-week training period, and at this point we have to take the players and teams at their word, with the lack of spring training games. But Castillo appears to be well-positioned for the beginning of the season.
May 28 2020Castillo was able to work out individually at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday for the first time since the facilities closed due to the COVID-19 crisis, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both Great American Ballpark and the Reds facilities in Arizona have partially re-opened, without coaches and only for players that are in town. It's not much, but it's a start for some players.
Mar 29 2020Castillo spent a portion of spring training working on improving his slider, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Pitching coach Derek Johnson spoke of that work developing the slider: "There were some (strikeouts) on his slider, which I think has gotten better. I don't have the numbers in front of me on what he struck out guys with. Of course, the changeup is a weapon. I also think in time guys are going to start looking for his changeup more." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Last year, Castillo used his slider the least often of his four pitches, throwing it 17 percent of the time. It generated a lot of whiffs (47.5%) and a low batting average against (.190), but opposing hitters did some damage when they made contact, slugging .452 against it. The changeup will likely always be Castillo's best pitch, but he would benefit from a second reliable offspeed offering.
Mar 25 2020In Castillo's four spring training starts, he had an 8.68 ERA and 2.14 WHIP, having allowed nine runs and 16 hits over 9.1 innings. He struck out 14 and walked four over that span. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo had similar, maybe even slightly worse, numbers last spring and then exploded out of the gate with seven regular-season games in which he allowed two or fewer runs. That would lead us to the conclusion to not put undue emphasis on his spring training numbers, lest we miss out on one of the dwindling number of healthy aces in our respective drafts.
Feb 29 2020Castillo threw two innings in Saturday's spring training loss to the Padres, allowing a run on four hits, a wild pitch and a walk and striking out four in the process. In his first spring training outing Monday, he only got two outs while allowing three runs on three hits and two walks, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo's command isn't quite there yet. "Better," manager David Bell said of Castillo's outing Saturday. "I thought it was a good step. Still not where he needs to get to by the start of the season. Definitely a step in the right direction."
Feb 20 2020Castillo threw live batting practice Thursday, and his changeup was especially effective against new teammate Mike Moustakas, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitchers are typically ahead of hitters at this stage, and that would especially be the case when they can alter the hitter's timing with off speed pitches. Nonetheless, it's good to see Castillo's go-to pitch working well early this spring.
Sep 26 2019Castillo (15-8) allowed five runs on five hits with four walks and eight strikeouts across five innings while taking a loss against the Brewers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old has been struggling with walks a lot lately, but this was still the first time he handed our at least four free passes since June 22. Unfortunately, it helped Castillo end this season on a downer note, though, he hasn't pitched well in September. In his last eight starts, Castillo went 4-4 with a 5.55 ERA. He ends the 2019 season with a 15-8 record, 3.40 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 226 strikeouts in 190.2 innings this season.
Sep 20 2019Castillo (15-7) was handed the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven over seven innings Friday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo worked five scoreless frames before allowing a solo homer in the sixth and a two-run blast in the seventh. Though he did turn in a quality start, his team only put up one run, resulting in a loss. The 26-year-old continues to show why he's his team's ace, as he now sports a 3.25 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 218 strikeouts across 185.2 innings this season.
Sep 16 2019Castillo is scheduled to make his next start Friday against the Mets, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo initially lined up to take the hill in Wednesday's series finale with the Cubs on his normal four days' rest, but manager David Bell has elected to add a sixth starter to the mix Monday in Kevin Gausman. As a result of Gausman's addition, Castillo will now move back two days in the schedule and should benefit from the change, as he'll be taking on the Mets at home rather than having to pitch at Wrigley Field. After Friday's outing, Castillo tentatively lines up for his last start of the season the following weekend in Pittsburgh.
Sep 13 2019Castillo (15-6) picked up the win against the Diamondbacks on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander turned in a decent performance against Arizona, though he still can't seem to put together a gem as of late. Making his 30th start of the season, Castillo improved his road record to an impressive 7-1 and did not allow any home runs for the second straight game. The 26-year-old will put his 3.22 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 211:72 to the test in Chicago against the Cubs on Wednesday.
Sep 7 2019Castillo (14-6) took the loss against Arizona on Saturday, pitching 7.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out ten. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Castillo gave up both runs in the fourth inning on two hits, a walk, and an RBI groundout. The 26-year-old did not give up another hit until the eighth inning, departing after 111 pitches. Castillo tossed six or more innings for the 14th time in his last 17 outings. He'll carry a 3.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 208:69 K:BB into his next scheduled start, on the road in Seattle on Thursday.
Sep 1 2019Castillo (14-5) earned the win against St. Louis on Sunday, pitching six innings and giving up three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight.
Aug 27 2019Castillo (13-5) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out 11 to earn the win Tuesday against the Marlins.
Aug 21 2019Castillo (12-5) allowed one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts across six innings while earning a victory against the Padres on Wednesday.
Aug 16 2019Castillo (11-5) was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits while striking out three over 4.1 innings Friday night against the Cardinals.
Aug 11 2019Castillo gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight through 6.2 innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Sunday.

Jul 24 2018Castillo allowed one run on four hits and one walk across 5.1 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Cardinals. He struck out five.Castillo was quite sharp in his first start of the second half, allowing just one extra-base hit as he kept an in-form Cards lineup down. He ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth inning, allowing a run on a pair of hits to start the frame before his seemingly premature removal at just 85 pitches. While he didn't have an opportunity to record a victory, this solid effort continues a recent trend for Castillo, who's posted a shiny 3.00 ERA over 21 innings in his last four starts. He'll look to keep it up this weekend against the Phillies.
Jul 14 2018Castillo pitched five innings in a no-decision Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits -- including a home run -- and striking out two Cardinals. The right-hander's 53 pitches meant he was efficient, especially because he registered 36 strikes, but he still couldn't last long enough to garner a decision in the Reds' eventual win. He finishes the first half with an unsightly 5.49 ERA but has flashed his elite ceiling at certain points. Corrections to his left-on-base percentage (a somewhat unlucky 66.2, per Fangraphs) and homer rate (1.65 per nine) could go a long way to rediscovering the upside he teased in 2017 and many chased in the early middle rounds of mixed drafts.
Jul 8 2018Castillo allowed three runs on six hits and two walks across four innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Cubs. He struck out three.Castillo got into a bit of trouble in the second inning, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk to start the frame. He was spotted a one-run lead going into the fourth, but he gave that right back as the hosts scored on a pair of hits to tie the game. Castillo worked up to 83 pitches to escape the jam and wasn't brought back out as the game moved into the fifth. It was a disappointing outing for Castillo, who delivered one of his strongest starts of the season last time out, and he'll look to get back on track next weekend against the Cardinals.
Jul 3 2018Castillo (5-8) tossed 6.2 one-run innings to earn the win Monday against the White Sox, allowing six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.Castillo limited baserunners to great effect and wasn't even scored upon until the bullpen allowed an inherited runner to score with two outs in the seventh inning. He threw an impressive 73 percent of his pitches for strikes, including a whopping 21 swinging strikes, and induced nine groundball outs in what was one of his finest outings of the season. Castillo still has a 5.53 ERA after allowing three earned runs of more in each of his previous six starts, but he continues to flash his potential from time to time. He'll look to build on this effort Sunday against the Cubs.
Jun 27 2018Castillo didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Braves, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk over four-plus innings while striking out four. After setting down 11 straight batters to begin the game, Castillo fell apart with two outs in the fourth inning, then allowed the first two hitters he faced in the fifth to reach base before getting the hook. Despite his clear upside the right-hander's inconsistency, both from start to start and within an outing, makes him a very difficult player to rely on in a fantasy lineup, and Castillo will carry a 5.85 ERA into his next start Monday at home against the White Sox.
Jun 22 2018Castillo (5-8) picked up the win in Friday's 6-3 victory over the Cubs, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over 5.2 innings while striking out five. The right-hander fell just short of a quality start, getting the hook after hitting Javier Baez with a pitch to put runners at first and second with two outs in the sixth inning of a 4-3 game, but Castillo was still able to notch his first win in almost a month. He'll carry a 5,70 ERA into his next outing Wednesday in Atlanta.
Jun 16 2018Castillo (4-8) took the loss against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks across five innings. He struck out two.Castillo once again struggled to keep the ball in the park, allowing a pair of homers for the second straight game and putting his season total at a brutal 17 home runs allowed through 78 innings. The 25-year-old has now taken a loss in four straight starts, a stretch in which he's gone six innings just once and allowed a combined 16 runs over 20.2 frames. He'll carry an unsightly 5.77 ERA into his next start, which will come at home against the Cubs.
Jun 10 2018Castillo (4-7) struck out 10 Cardinals batters Saturday but still picked up the loss, allowing five runs over six innings on four hits and three walks.Included in the damage against Castillo were two first-inning homers, giving him 15 homers allowed in 73 innings. Castillo now has a 5.79 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, and a big reason why might be his declining velocity. After averaging 97.5 MPH on his fastball last season, his average fastball this year is 95.3 MPH.
Jun 3 2018Castillo (4-6) got the loss against the Padres on Sunday, giving up four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings, striking out three and walking one as the Reds eventually fell 6-3.Castillo had seemed to be putting it together of late after a brutal start to the season, but he's now given up four earned in back-to-back outings, bringing his ERA up to 5.64 and WHIP to 1.45 over 67 innings. Overall, that's a disappointing return so far for a player who was touted as a potential breakout candidate after posting a 3.12 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP with 98 strikeouts over 89.1 innings in his first action at the big-league level last season.
May 31 2018Castillo will make his next start Sunday against the Padres, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports.Castillo wasn't initially in line for two starts heading into the current week, but the Reds' pitching schedule changed after Homer Bailey was banished to the bullpen following another poor outing Monday against the Diamondbacks. Bailey had been in line to start the series finale in San Diego, but that assignment will now fall to Castillo with the Reds taking advantage of Thursday's off day to get by with a four-man rotation for the time being. The adjustment looks like a favorable one for Castillo, who now has the luxury of facing an anemic Padres offense at one of the pitcher-friendlier environments in all of baseball.
May 30 2018Castillo (4-5) allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in a loss to Arizona on Tuesday, striking out six and walking three in five innings.Castillo limited the hits, but the walks hurt him as two of the three allowed came around to score. After a very rough start to the year Castillo has put up good numbers in May, going 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.25 WHIP to go along with a 37:12 K:BB in 33.2 innings. Prior to Tuesday's start Castillo hadn't allowed more than two runs in his last five starts, and he'll look to get back on track in his next outing against the Rockies at home.
May 24 2018Castillo (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings in a win over the Pirates on Thursday. He gave up a two-run homer to David Freese in his final frame but was strong otherwise, inducing 10 swinging strikes on 90 pitches. It's been a tale of two months so far for Castillo; after posting a 7.85 ERA and 1.67 WHIP over his first six starts, Castillo has turned in a 2.83 ERA and 31:9 K:BB in May. A mechanical tweak got Castillo back on track and looking once again like the burgeoning ace we saw last year. Up next: a road matchup in Arizona.
May 19 2018Castillo struck out four batters in five innings in a no decision Saturday against the Cubs, walking five and allowing six hits but just one run.Castillo didn't have a single clean inning but nevertheless escaped without major damage. He got out a bases-loaded one-out jam in the top of the first inning by getting Kyle Schwarber to ground into a double-play, setting the tone for a shaky outing. In all five innings, he managed to strand a runner in scoring position, but only once did he allow a runner to cross the plate. It certainly wasn't a spectacular performance, but it served to bring the young righty's ERA down to 5.61. He'll next take the hill Thursday against the Pirates.
May 13 2018Castillo (3-4) was charged with three runs (two earned) on four hits over six innings in a win over the Dodgers on Sunday. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk.He gave up a pair of solo homers but was sharp for most of the afternoon, getting a ton of swinging strikes (20 total) with both the high fastball and the low changeup. As noted by The Athletic, Castillo recently made a change to his mechanics, raising his arm slot. Castillo's release point and spin were down early on and that led to poor results, but he now has a 3.06 ERA and 22:2 K:BB in three May starts. He gets the Cubs at home next weekend.
May 9 2018Castillo (2-4) allowed two runs on three hits and one walk across 5.2 innings while earning the win Tuesday against the Mets. He struck out seven.Castillo was excellent through the early going, retiring the first 14 batters he faced in order. He took a shutout into the sixth inning, but allowed a solo home run, a single and a walk before he was removed with two outs. Castillo endured a poor start to the season, but he's begun to turn things around of late, allowing four earned runs with a 14:2 K:BB ratio in 11.2 innings over his last two outings. He'll take a still unsightly 7.01 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP into his scheduled start Sunday against the Dodgers.
May 2 2018Castillo (1-4) allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six innings but still took the loss Wednesday night against the Brewers.Castillo bounced back from a disastrous one-inning, five run start last time out against the Twins with his best start of the season. Unfortunately, the Reds offense was only able to give him one run of support. Still, this was just Castillo's second quality start of the season, and for the first time in weeks he was able to stay nasty (21 swinging strikes) without sacrificing control. Castillo's 4.1 BB/9 entering Wednesday's start was a major factor holding him back. This start can be a template for success for Castillo, but he still has to show he can follow it consistently.
Apr 27 2018Castillo lasted just one inning in a no-decision against the Twins on Friday, giving up five earned runs on six hits with no strikeouts and two walks as the Reds eventually prevailed 15-9.Castillo's rough start to the season persisted against Minnesota as he allowed eight baserunners and five runs before exiting the contest after the first inning. He now has a brutal 7.85 ERA and 1.67 WHIP, a disappointing follow up to what was an excellent initial foray into the big leagues last year when he posted a 3.12 ERA and 98 strikeouts over 89.1 innings. It's still early so there's always the chance he overcomes this rough start and gets back to that form if you're willing to try and stick it out. But until he shows some signs of improvement, it's hard to trust him for fantasy purposes. He'll try to get his season on track in his next start against the Brewers on Wednesday.
Apr 22 2018Castillo (1-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings against the Cardinals.Castillo allowed a lot of baserunners in this one -- the seven hits and four walks were both his highest totals of the season thus far -- so he was actually somewhat fortunate to limit the damage to just three runs. It's been a frustrating start for the 25-year-old, who had been trending in the right direction his last two times out, but now sees his ERA and WHIP sit at an unsightly 6.51 and 1.45, respectively. He'll look to right the ship next time out Friday against the Twins.
Apr 16 2018Castillo (1-2) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks and struck out eight through 6.2 innings to earn the win Monday against the Brewers.Castillo was cruising, with a shutout through six innings, but he and the Reds stumbled in the seventh inning as they were nursing a 9-0 lead. He was otherwise fantastic, as he induced 18 swinging strikes on 107 pitches and induced seven grounders against five fly balls. But unfortunately, the four-run seventh inning -- including two inherited runners allowed by reliever Cody Reed -- will keep Castillo's ERA at a lofty 6.75.
Apr 11 2018Castillo allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts through six innings but took a no-decision Wednesday against the Phillies. This was Castillo's best start of the young season, the first start in which he both lasted into the sixth inning and allowed fewer than four runs. He drew 10 swinging strikes in 89 pitches, and most importantly, after allowing four walks in his first 10 innings, Castillo didn't walk a single batter Wednesday. He still sits at 0-2 with a brutal 7.31 ERA, but progress is progress.
Apr 6 2018Castillo (0-2) labored against the Pirates on Friday, allowing four earned runs on six hits in five innings, striking out three and walking three in a 14-3 defeat.Castillo was touted as potential breakout candidate going into the season after he struck out 98 batters in his first 89.1 big-league innings last year to go along with a 3.12 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, but Friday's performance marked his second-consecutive lackluster start to begin the new season. The 25-year-old is clearly talented and has shown he has devastating stuff, but his 9.00 ERA through his first 10 innings of the new season is still concerning for those who drafted him with the thought that he had the potential to help anchor a fantasy staff. He'll look to get his season on track in his next start against the Phillies on April 11.
Mar 31 2018Castillo earned a loss in his first start of the season Saturday against the Nationals, striking out six but allowing six runs on six hits, a walk and two homers.Castillo received a lot of helium this draft season after a strong showing in 15 starts last season, but his first start of the year was a disappointment. There will be few assignments more difficult for Castillo this year than facing the Nationals' lineup in hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park, but the 25-year-old didn't come close to navigating the matchup successfully. He was jumped on right away with a three-run home run by Matt Adams in the first inning. He proceeded to allow a run in three of the next four innings, including a solo shot by Trea Turner, and was pulled after the fifth. His six strikeouts provided something of a silver lining, and it would be wrong to penalize the youngster too much for one poor performance against a tough lineup. He'll look to get back on track in an easier assignment April 6 against the Pirates at PNC Park.
Mar 19 2018Castillo has rejoined the Reds following the birth of his daughter and threw a bullpen session Sunday, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.Castillo is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game Tuesday and remains on target to be ready for the start of the season. His absence created an opportunity for Cody Reed to pick up a spare start Saturday.
Mar 14 2018Castillo is away from the team while awaiting the birth of his first child, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.Castillo should be back at camp within the next few days following his child's birth. The right-hander is slated to begin the year as the top arm in Cincinnati's rotation after compiling a 3.12 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 89.1 innings with the team in 2017.
Mar 4 2018Castillo allowed one run against the Cubs on five hits over 2.2 innings Saturday, striking out four while not walking anyone. Two of the hits were flukes - a bloop double down the left field line by Tommy La Stella, and a squib ground ball against the shift down the third base line by Anthony Rizzo. Castillo remains on pace to be ready for the start of the season.
Feb 26 2018Castillo looks to be a lock for Cincinnati's starting rotation in 2018, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Despite starting just 15 games last season, Castillo is in a position to begin the season as a member of the starting rotation, barring a complete meltdown in spring training. He finished 2017 with a 3-7 record and recorded a 3.12 ERA across 89.1 innings. The 25-year-old will look for more run support during his 2018 campaign and is expected to rack up the strikeouts as he continues to show impressive velocity on his fastball.
Sep 6 2017Castillo (3-7) earned the win over the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits over eight innings. He struck out 10 and did not issue a walk.Castillo acknowledged last week that this would be his final start of 2017, and what a way to go out. After allowing a solo homer to Neil Walker in the first, Castillo breezed through the rest of the afternoon, allowing two hits over his final seven frames. The 24-year-old ends the season with a 3.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 98:32 K:BB in 89.1 innings with the Reds and looks primed to receive the Opening Day nod next year.
Sep 2 2017Castillo didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-3 win over the Pirates, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over four innings while striking out five.He threw 60 of 89 pitches for strikes, and with the Reds keeping a very careful eye on his workload, manager Bryan Price elected to go to his bullpen for the fifth inning rather than give Castillo a shot at his third win of the season. The 24-year-old will take the mound Wednesday at home against the Brewers in what will be his final start of the year according to MLB.com -- "[Price] told me he didn't want me to throw, like, 100 pitches because I have one more outing after this one," Castillo said through an interpreter after the game -- but as yet the club hasn't indicated whether they'll shut him down completely or use him out of the bullpen for the rest of September.
Aug 27 2017Castillo may only make one or two starts in September before being shut down for the season, Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Though he's recorded wins in just two of his 13 starts, Castillo has been the Reds' top starter since making the leap from Double-A Pensacola to the majors in late June, submitting a 3.26 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 9.7 K/9 rate. However, since he's already accumulated 157.2 innings between both levels and the Reds have previously stated that they would like to keep the rookie around 165 innings for 2017, a shutdown seems imminent for Castillo. While that will limit Castillo's utility for fantasy owners the rest of the way, manager Bryan Price indicated it won't have any bearing on the right-hander's status heading into 2018. Price has already stated that the 24-year-old is a lock to open next season as a member of the rotation.
Aug 26 2017Castillo (2-7) allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine across seven innings to take the loss Saturday against the Pirates.Castillo pitched five shutout innings, but his only mistake was giving up a home run to opposing pitcher Gerrit Cole, which led to his seventh loss of the season. He's been very solid over his last three outings, as he's allowed just three earned runs over 17 innings of work, and despite his poor winning percentage, fantasy owners have benefited by his 3.26 ERA to go along with a 1.14 WHIP. He'll make his next start Friday against the Pirates.
Aug 20 2017Castillo (2-6) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters through just four innings during Sunday's loss to Atlanta.Castillo has now allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his past five starts and owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 9.5 K/9 for the season. Those numbers move the needle in all fantasy settings, and the 24-year-old righty's value is on the rise. It will be difficult to rack up wins starting for the basement-dwelling Reds, but otherwise, there's a lot to like about Castillo's upside moving forward. He lines up to face the Pirates at Busch Stadium in his next start.
Aug 15 2017Castillo allowed two hits and two walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Tuesday.Castillo was dominant in this one, with the sharp movement on his fastball and changeup resulting in 14 swinging strikes. He didn't get any help from his offense and remains stuck with just two wins in 11 starts, but Castillo has been the ace of the staff since his arrival to Cincinnati. In fact, he's been one of the better arms in baseball since making the jump from Double-A -- as Mike Petriello of MLB.com pointed out, Castillo had a top-10 xwOBA among starting pitchers even before Tuesday's gem.
Aug 10 2017Castillo gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision against the Padres on Thursday. The Reds put up 10 runs on the day, but they managed just two during Castillo's time on the mound, and thus Castillo remains with just one win over his last six turns despite four quality starts in that span. He's averaging nearly a strikeout per inning with Cincinnati, but the K's have been down in recent outings -- he's struck out four or fewer in three of his last four starts -- while the walks have been up. The 24-year-old lines up for a two-step next week, with road matchups against the Cubs and Braves on tap.
Aug 5 2017Castillo (2-5) was charged with four runs (three earned) on three hits over 6.1 innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. He issued five walks and struck out four. The 24-year-old was wild at times -- he hit two batters in addition to the five walks -- as he seemed to battle mechanical issues early on. However, he was able to bail himself out throughout much of the night, thanks in large part to the groundball (nine groundball outs). Castillo has posted strong numbers since his callup despite a tough schedule, and is looking like a viable option in most formats, although wins may continue to be hard to come by. He lines up for a home matchup against the Padres his next time out.
Jul 30 2017Castillo (2-4) tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Sunday's win over the Marlins, allowing three hits and one walk with six strikeouts.Castillo avoided hard contact masterfully in this one, allowing just one extra-base hit and inducing 10 groundball outs. He also threw 66 percent of his pitches for strikes and was only scored upon when Dee Gordon came around from first on a double in the sixth inning. Castillo's first few outings with the Reds were nothing special, but he has now delivered three quality starts in his last five, posting a 29:9 K:BB during that stretch. He seems to be coming into his own and will carry a 3.56 ERA into Saturday's matchup with the Cardinals.
Jul 25 2017Castillo (1-4) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks across five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Yankees. He struck out two.Castillo flirted with danger on the day but was able to limit the damage to a run-scoring triple-play in the second inning, a sacrifice fly in the fourth and an RBI double from Austin Romine in the fifth. He did induce 10 groundball outs, which undoubtedly helped him navigate the tough Yankees lineup with a respectable outing in hand. Castillo has delivered a series of solid if unspectacular outings since being called up Jun. 23 and will carry a 4.05 ERA into Sunday's matchup with the Marlins.
Jul 20 2017Castillo (1-3) gave up four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Thursday. The 24-year-old more than held his own in yet another tough matchup -- in his six starts, Castillo has faced the Nationals twice, the Diamondbacks twice, the Brewers and the Rockies at Coors Field. Despite the tough schedule, Castillo now sits with an impressive 3.86 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB over 35 innings this year, making him pretty easily the Reds' best starter since his callup. However, things won't get any easier for Castillo in the immediate future with a road start against the Yankees lined up for early next week.
Jul 15 2017Castillo (1-2) allowed three runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six batters through six innings during Saturday's loss to Washington.Considering the opponent, this was a respectable showing from the rookie. Castillo has now pitched at least five innings in each of his five starts with the Reds and boasts a solid 3.41 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 11.2 K/9. The strikeouts are particularly impressive, and Castillo also sports an encouraging 56.2 groundball rate. The 24-year-old righty is likely to have some start-to-start inconsistency going forward, but he's definitely worth considering in the majority of fantasy settings. Castillo projects to face the Diamondbacks at Great American Ball Park in his next start.
Jul 8 2017Castillo (1-1) threw 6.2 scoreless innings Saturday, giving up three hits and one walk while striking out eight Diamondbacks for his first career major-league victory. The right-hander dazzled a lineup that wasn't starting A.J. Pollock, to be fair, but it's an accomplishment against a typically strong club at a dangerous park in Chase Field. Castillo's heavy fastball and enticing arsenal could play strongly in fantasy leagues if he can refine his control.
Jul 3 2017Castillo (0-1) struck out eight but allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a loss Monday against Colorado.Castillo continues to show exceptionally nasty stuff. He induced 17 swinging strikes on 111 pitches and now has 22 strikeouts in just 16.1 major league innings. He has been too wild to go deep in games, however -- even though he walked just one batter Monday, he threw only 10 first-pitch strikes to 27 hitters, which contributed to the whopping nine hits he allowed. But Castillo is young, and if he can tighten up his control, his already electric arsenal will prove all the more effective.
Jun 28 2017Castillo struck out nine Milwaukee hitters over 5.2 innings Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in a no-decision.He left with the lead and the Reds went on to win, but not before their bullpen blew the victory for Castillo. Nonetheless, the young righty has impressed with his velocity and showed strong control in the minors, so he offers tantalizing upside. However, the schedule does him no favors, as Castillo is lined up for a start against the Rockies at Coors Field on Monday.
Jun 24 2017Manager Bryan Price said Castillo will stay in the Reds' starting rotation for now, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Castillo earned a spot start Friday after Asher Wojciechowski was designated for assignment, and the 24-year-old prospect pitched well enough to keep pitching for the big club. He allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five in his major-league debut. His next start is scheduled to come Wednesday against the Brewers.
Jun 23 2017Castillo was recalled from Double-A Pensacola to start Friday's game against the Nationals. As expected, Castillo will step in to fill the rotational void left when the Reds designated Asher Wojciechowski for assignment Sunday. Although Castillo has impressed with Pensacola this season, compiling a 2.58 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 81:13 K:BB over 80.1 innings (14 starts), he faces one of the better offenses in baseball in his major-league debut, so it wouldn't be very wise to expect much of the 24-year-old. Southpaw Amir Garrett was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding roster move.
Jun 23 2017Castillo (0-0) allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out five across five innings, but received no decision Friday against the Nationals. In his first big league start, Castillo was fortunate to get away with putting 10 runners on base, including a pair of homers, but was in line for the win until the bullpen blew a 5-2 lead. It's very possible that his time in the rotation will quickly come to an end, as Brandon Finnegan (shoulder) is expected to return from the disabled list in the near future. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Brewers.
Jun 21 2017Castillo will be recalled from Double-A Pensacola on Friday to start for the Reds later that evening against the Nationals, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. After the Reds designated Asher Wojciechowski for assignment Sunday, it was expected the organization would go with one of its more experienced arms at Triple-A Louisville to fill the void in the rotation, but it will instead be the 24-year-old Castillo who gets the call. While Castillo, one of the Reds' top pitching prospects, has been electric for Pensacola this season, compiling a 2.58 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 81:13 K:BB over 80.1 innings, it may be unwise to expect quality results from him as he makes his major-league debut against one of baseball's top offenses. Even if Castillo is able to steer clear of an implosion, he may only receive one more start beyond Friday's, as Brandon Finnegan (shoulder) will make a third rehab start at Triple-A on Wednesday and could be ready to come off the 60-day disabled list by the end of June or early July.
