Jun 1 2024The Phillies transferred Covey (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey has been on the IL since the beginning of the season due to a right shoulder strain, so his move to the 60-day IL has no effect on his return date. It does, however, open a spot on Philadelphia's 40-man roster for Freddy Tarnok, who was claimed off waivers from Oakland on Saturday.
Apr 9 2024Covey (shoulder) was cleared to resume throwing bullpen sessions at extended spring training in Florida over the weekend, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was able to get back on the mound for the first time since making his final Grapefruit League appearance March 1 before being shut down with a right shoulder strain. As a reliever, Covey won't require as extensive of a buildup program as a starting pitcher would, but the right-hander is still likely at least a couple weeks away from being ready to return from the 15-day injured list.
Mar 28 2024Philadelphia placed Covey on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right shoulder strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey hadn't made any Grapefruit League appearances since March 1 after experiencing tightness in his right shoulder, so he could need more than the minimum 15 days to get fully ramped up and complete a minor-league rehab assignment. The veteran righty is expected to serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen once he's ready to make his season debut.
Mar 13 2024Covey (shoulder) will begin this season on the injured list, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey has missed much of camp with a right shoulder injury and doesn't appear to have made much progress. It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined. Covey is slated for a long-relief role for the Phillies once healthy.
Mar 2 2024Covey reported tightness in his right shoulder Saturday, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The news of Covey's injury comes a day after the 32-year-old reliever surrendered two earned runs and three walks without recording an out against the Marlins on Friday. The severity of Covey's injury is unclear, but the Phillies will likely give him at least a few days to recover before putting him back in a game.
Sep 30 2023The Phillies placed Covey on the 15-day injured list Saturday with lower back pain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey served as a solid middle-relief option for Philadelphia this season and will finish the 2023 regular-season campaign with a 3.77 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 43 innings across 29 appearances. Luis Ortiz was promoted from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.
Jun 13 2023Covey dropped to 1-2 after giving up two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings of relief in Monday's 9-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Matt Strahm working as the Phillies' opening pitcher on the night, Covey looked like a candidate to serve as a bulk reliever. However, manager Rob Thomson instead treated the series opener as more of a bullpen day, as five pitchers were used to cover eight innings. Since limiting this same Diamondbacks squad to one run over five innings in a starting role May 23, Covey has been used in relief in each of his last four appearances and hasn't covered more than two innings on any occasion. The Phillies are still running out a four-man rotation at the moment, but Covey doesn't look as though he'll be the clear-cut choice to pitch on days that a fifth starter is needed.
May 28 2023Covey (0-1) allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits Sunday. He recorded two outs and took a loss against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a nightmare outing for Covey as he was taken deep twice and coughed up seven total runs without making it out of the first inning. He gave up just three runs over nine innings in his first two MLB outings this season, but Sunday's meltdown shot his ERA up to 7.45. It's unclear if the Phillies will give the 31-year-old righty another turn in the rotation.
May 26 2023Covey will start Sunday against Atlanta, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was solid in his Phillies debut Tuesday, surrendering just one run through five innings out of the bullpen while striking out six batters. His performance has earned him a promotion into Philadelphia's rotation, and another strong performance could ensure he remains there.
May 23 2023Covey didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over five relief innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Matt Strahm worked two innings as the opener and put the Phillies in a 2-1 hole, Covey entered the game and gave his team a chance to mount a comeback, tossing 55 of 91 pitches for strikes and exiting with the score tied 3-3. The right-hander has been solid in two appearances as a bulk reliever so far this season, although he doesn't yet have a decision to show for it. Covey will likely continue filling this role for the time being as the Phillies try to patch together the back of their rotation in the wake of Bailey Falter's demotion.
May 22 2023Covey is set to be the primary pitcher in Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Saturday, and he is on track to make his appearance with his new club a few days later, as Matt Stahm will open Tuesday's contest with Covey slated to follow him. Covey tossed 63 pitches in a game with the Dodgers last week and at least 72 pitches in all seven minor-league games he appeared in earlier this season, so there should not be a major limitation on his workload.
May 20 2023Covey was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Saturday from the Dodgers, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Thursday, and the right-hander not only is now a part of the Philadelphia organization, but he's likely to start Tuesday, according to Gelb. Whether Covey sticks around for the Phillies going forward will at least partially be determined by how he pitches against the Diamondbacks come Tuesday.
May 18 2023The Dodgers designated Covey for assignment Thursday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: One day after pitching in the majors for the first time since 2020, Covey has once again been cast off the Dodgers' 40-man roster. The 31-year-old righty holds a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 32 innings in Triple-A this season. It's possible Covey gets claimed by a team in search of a multi-inning reliever, but his career 6.54 ERA in the majors lowers his chances.
May 17 2023The Dodgers selected Covey's contract from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey has made seven appearances for Oklahoma City in 2023, logging a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 32 innings. The right-hander will provide a fresh arm for the Dodgers' bullpen with the ability to work multiple innings.
Sep 10 2020Covey was recalled by the Red Sox on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey spent nearly a month in Pawtucket after putting forth inconsistent results during his first major-league stint of the season. However, he'll return to Boston's bullpen after Austin Brice (lat) was placed on the 10-day injured list. Covey will likely pitch in low-leverage situations.
Aug 16 2020Covey was optioned to Boston's alternate training site Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey has made four relief appearances for the Red Sox this season but hasn't exactly impressed, allowing five runs in 6.1 innings. He'll make way on the roster for Chris Mazza, who starts against the Yankees on Sunday.
Aug 9 2020Covey is expected to pitch as a reliever, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was called up Saturday after Boston optioned Ryan Weber after three poor starts. While Covey was a starter for the White Sox the last few seasons, the Red Sox plan to call up a pitcher from the alternate camp to take Weber's spot in the rotation. The list of candidates includes Brian Johnson, Kyle Hart and Tanner Houck.
Aug 8 2020Covey was recalled by the Red Sox on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey began the season on the major-league roster but headed to the alternate training site after he had a rough appearance early in the season. Ryan Weber was optioned to the alternate training site to make room in the rotation.
Jul 25 2020Covey was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey earned a spot with Boston's pitching staff to begin the regular season, but he'll be removed from the major-league club after a rough relief outing against the Orioles on Saturday. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two in Saturday's loss. Covey could return to the majors at some point this season, but he's struggled in the big leagues in each of the last three seasons.
Jul 23 2020The Red Sox selected Covey's contract Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey had been attending summer camp with Tampa Bay as a non-roster invitee, but he'll now get a spot on the 40-man roster and 30-man Opening Day roster two days after Boston acquired him in a trade. The Red Sox have yet to clarify his role, but Covey looks like a logical fit in a thin rotation lacking in any healthy, established options beyond Nathan Eovaldi and Martin Perez. If Boston decides to go with other alternatives at the back end of the rotation, Covey would likely work as a long man out of the bullpen.
Jul 21 2020Covey was traded from the Rays to the Red Sox on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey had a clause in his contract with the Rays that forced the team's hand if he was given an opportunity on a 40-man roster elsewhere, and Tampa chose to let him go Tuesday. The 28-year-old spent the past three seasons with the White Sox before signing a minor-league deal with the Rays in February. Covey hasn't produced stellar results in the majors during his career, and it's unclear whether he'll see significant playing time for Boston this year.
Mar 12 2020The Rays reassigned Covey to their minor-league camp Thursday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he made 45 starts at the big-league level over the past three seasons, Covey wasn't a serious rotation candidate for Tampa Bay and was signed this winter merely to provide organizational depth. Assuming he accepts an assignment to Triple-A Durham to begin the season, he'll likely work as a starter or swingman for the affiliate.
Jan 21 2020Covey went unclaimed on waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, per MLB's official transaction log. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old was removed from the 40-man roster last week but will remain with the organization after going through the waiver wire unclaimed. Covey posted a 7.98 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 41:28 K:BB across 58.2 innings (12 starts) last year, and he has a cumulative 6.54 ERA over his three big-league seasons (63 games).
Jan 14 2020Covey was designated for assignment on Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was removed from the roster to clear space for the newly-signed Steve Cishek. Covey's 7.98 ERA in 58.2 innings last season makes him not particularly likely to get claimed on waivers.
Sep 20 2019Covey (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sept. 16. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey's stint on the injured list does not run through the final day of the regular season, so he technically has a chance to pitch again before September comes to a close. However, with the White Sox out of playoff contention, it's likely he will not pitch again until 2020.
Sep 17 2019Covey will not make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Twins due to shoulder soreness, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ivan Nova will throw an inning instead of his scheduled bullpen session that day, so it sounds like he may be the opener in a bullpen game. Covey is unlikely to return this season, according to Merkin.
Sep 13 2019Covey allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks over 3.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Friday. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey was able to keep the ball in the yard in this contest, but a three-run first inning and a two-run single from Shed Long in the fourth were enough to end the right-hander's night fairly early. Covey now owns a 7.98 ERA and 1.76 WHIP across 58.2 innings this season. The 28-year-old is penciled in for his next start Wednesday versus the heavy-hitting Twins.
Sep 7 2019Covey (1-8) allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Angels on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shohei Ohtani touched him up for a homer and Covey has now given up six long balls in his last 13.1 innings at the major-league level. Covey got the start Saturday over Ross Detwiler. He had good numbers with Triple-A Charlotte this season (2.82 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) and it makes sense that the White Sox would want to give him one last chance to prove himself. Until he shows something more against top-level hitters, Covey's can't be considered a viable fantasy option.
Sep 4 2019Covey will start Saturday against the Angels, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Covey will replace the veteran Ross Detwiler. Covey is likely auditioning for a roster spot next season, though his 6.88 ERA on the season thus far doesn't make a great case on his behalf.
Aug 6 2019Covey was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte following Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader at Detroit.
Aug 3 2019Covey was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday.
Jul 28 2019Covey (1-7) allowed five runs on five hits and failed to retire a batter Sunday against the Twins. He was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after the game, Bruce Levine

Jul 21 2018Covey (4-5) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five across 8.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the Mariners. This was Covey's longest start of his career, and the first time he's pitched more than five innings in a start since June 13. He generated 12 groundball outs, limiting the Mariners' opportunity to do any damage against him. However, he generated only seven swinging strikes, making him dependent on limiting hard contact to be successful. While he has flashed that ability for several starts at a time, he has not gotten results consistently enough to be a reliable fantasy asset.
Jul 10 2018Covey (3-5) gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in a loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday, striking out five and walking two in five innings.Covey has fallen on hard times of late, surrendering 26 runs over his last 20 innings (five starts). In that span his ERA has jumped from 2.29 to 5.69. In 11 starts this year Covey is sporting a 1.64 WHIP and a .290 batting average against while carrying a 43:26 K:BB in 55.1 innings. The young right-hander is likely not slated to start again until after the All-Star game.
Jul 5 2018Covey (3-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.2 innings against the Reds.Covey breezed through the first three innings, retiring all nine batters he faced to that point before the wheels feel off in the fourth on five singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. The 26-year-old has now given up at least four earned runs in four straight outings, seeing his ERA more than double in the process -- jumping from 2.29 to 5.54. The righty has also struggled with command in that stretch, striking out two or fewer in all four of those starts and is at 38:24 K:BB through 50.1 innings. He'll look to get back on track Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Jun 29 2018Covey (3-3) was torched for nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits and three walks over just 2.1 innings in a loss Friday to the Rangers.Covey was rocked for four home runs, including two three-run blasts. He had given up just two over 44.1 innings before Friday's start, a shocking collapse from a pitcher whose gameplan relies on grounders and keeping the ball in the park. Covey was dealing with hip soreness dating back to his previous start June 23, and after a performance like this, it's easy to wonder if that soreness was indicative of a larger problem. His next turn is scheduled for Wednesday against Cincinnati.
Jun 27 2018Covey (hip) will take the mound in Texas on Friday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Covey was forced to leave Saturday's start against Oakland due to right hip soreness but was able to toss a side session earlier this week without experiencing any problems. Over eight starts this year, he's posted a 3.45 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with a 36:20 K:BB.
Jun 26 2018Covey (hip) did not experience any issues while throwing a side session Tuesday and is on track to make his next scheduled start, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports. The White Sox have not confirmed their starters for their upcoming series with the Rangers that begins Friday, but with Covey making it through Tuesday's workout without issue, he is on track to take the ball that day with an extra day of rest thanks to Monday's team off day.
Jun 24 2018Covey (hip) expects to throw a side session on Tuesday and may be able to start Friday's game in Texas, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. He left Saturday's start against the A's with right hip soreness, but said he felt better on Sunday. Assuming all goes well when he throws Tuesday, there's no reason to think he wouldn't make his next start, but given his limited upside and the uncertainty regarding this injury, he makes for a high-risk start in weekly leagues.
Jun 23 2018Covey exited Saturday's game against the Athletics with right hip soreness.Covey is considered day-to-day. Prior to suffering the injury, he was in the middle of a poor start, allowing four runs on four walks and a pair of hits, striking out just one batter in four innings. He did not factor into the decision. His next start was expected to come Friday against the Rangers, though the injury means that's currently up in the air.
Jun 23 2018Covey exited Saturday's start against the Athletics in the top of the fifth inning, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The White Sox released an announcement stating an update will come on his condition when more information is available. The right-hander was removed with a three-run lead by Chris Volstad. Expect an update within the coming hours.
Jun 18 2018Covey (3-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and five walks across five innings to take the loss Monday against the Indians. He struck out two.Covey struggled mightily to find the strike zone at times, issuing as many walks in this one as he had over his previous three starts (18 innings) combined. He allowed three runs on three hits, a walk and an error in the second inning before Jason Kipnis victimized him for an RBI single in the third and a solo home run in the fifth. This was a disappointing effort from Covey, who hadn't allowed more than two runs in any of his last five outings. He still has a shiny 2.90 ERA and will look to bounce back this weekend against the Athletics.
Jun 13 2018Covey (3-1) got the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on 10 hits while striking out five over seven innings against the Indians.Though the 10 hits are a bit alarming, all of them were singles and Covey was mostly able to work around them to avoid any damage until he came back out to start the eighth inning. The 26-year-old has outdueled Chris Sale and Trevor Bauer in consecutive outings, and is working to a 1.00 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 18 innings over his last three starts -- all against first place teams (Milwaukee, Boston and Cleveland). He'll carry a 2.29 ERA into a rematch against the Indians on Monday.
Jun 10 2018Covey is the projected starter for Wednesday's game against the Indians.Covey earned himself a spot in the rotation after out-dueling Boston's Chris Sale on Friday. Up to that point, the White Sox hadn't announced which pitcher would be removed from the rotation to make room for the returning Carlos Rodon (shoulder), who started Saturday. The organization has since announced that Hector Santiago will move back to the bullpen and Covey will remain in the rotation.
Jun 9 2018Covey (2-1) picked up the win in Friday's 1-0 victory over the Red Sox, scattering three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out seven.Matched up against Boston ace Chris Sale, Covey rose to the occasion and struck out at least seven batters for the third time in four starts since returning to the big-league staff in late May. The right-hander now holds a 2.22 ERA and 28:1 K:BB through 28.1 innings and appears to be locking down a spot in the rotation heading into Wednesday's home start against Cleveland.
Jun 7 2018Covey will remain in the rotation for at least one more turn and start Friday against the Red Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. When Covey was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on May 19 to replace Carson Fulmer in the rotation, it was widely assumed the right-hander would merely be a seat filler until Carlos Rodon (shoulder) was ready to return from the 60-day disabled list. Though Rodon appears set to make his season debut this weekend, Covey looks like he has done enough to maintain his starting role after three solid outings, perhaps putting Lucas Giolito or Hector Santiago more at risk of losing their rotation spots. Covey has posted a 1.65 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 16.1 innings over his last three turns, a stark turnaround from the 7.71 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 41 strikeouts he submitted over 70 frames in 2017 as a Rule 5 pick. Per James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago, an uptick in Covey's fastball velocity -- along with his increased usage of the offering -- seems to be a major reason behind his improved swinging-strike and groundball rates, and could continue to make him a serviceable back-end arm in spite of his still-spotty control (4.0 BB/9).
Jun 3 2018Allowed one unearned run on four hits and three walks across five innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Brewers. He struck out seven.Covey allowed a run on an error in the fifth inning, allowing the visitors to take the lead. His side rallied to a comfortable victory later in the game, but he was already out of the game and didn't earn a win. Still, Covey delivered a useful outing, keeping his team in the game and giving them a chance to win. He's alternated good and bad outings of late, but his 4.0 BB/9 remains an area he needs to improve on if he's to hover anywhere near his current 2.82 ERA. He'll look to do just that in his next scheduled start Friday against the Red Sox.
May 30 2018Covey will start Sunday against the Brewers, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. The identity of Sunday's starter was on hold until the White Sox brass got together to discuss the next step for Carlos Rodon (shoulder), who threw five shutout innings Tuesday while on rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Charlotte. Covey will get at least one more start while Rodon is expected to make his next start for the Knights.
May 29 2018Covey allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in Monday's 9-6 loss to the Indians.Covey wasn't helped much by his defense, which committed three errors and allowed a catch-able flyball drop for a double, but he bears some responsibility as well. The right-hander was given a 5-2 lead through four innings, but he left with one out in the fifth after loading the bases. He also uncorked a couple of wild pitches. With Carlos Rodon (shoulder) nearing a return, Covey's stay in the rotation may last one more turn, maybe two. He's next expected to start Sunday at home against Milwaukee.
May 24 2018Covey (1-1) held Baltimore to one run on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts through seven innings to pick up his first major league win Wednesday night.Covey was 0-8 across two seasons entering Wednesday's contest but was finally able to break the schneid with a gem. His fastball topped out at a blazing 97.1 mph and induced nine swinging strikes and 10 outs in play. He leaned on it, as the two-seamer made up 80 of his 104 pitches, but when it's that electric, he won't need much else to get by. Covey replaced the demoted Carson Fulmer in the rotation, so given this performance, expect him to get another turn next Monday in Cleveland.
May 22 2018Covey will start Wednesday against the Orioles, Tom Musick of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Covey was recently recalled from Triple-A Charlotte after the White Sox demoted Carson Fulmer. Covey, who was a Rule 5 selection in 2017 that stuck with the White Sox, will be looking for his first big-league win. He was 0-8 with a 7.58 ERA in 19 games (13 starts) for Chicago last season.
May 19 2018Covey was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday.Covey has only made one appearance for the White Sox this season -- a spot start in late April -- but he's impressed at the Triple-A level, posting a 2.33 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 38.2 innings in Charlotte's rotation. He is tentatively in line to start Wednesday's game against Baltimore, but it's likely that he will be available out of the bullpen immediately should manager Rick Renteria need him.
Apr 28 2018Covey's contract was purchased from Triple-A on Saturday and he will start Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Royals, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports. He was outrighted off the 40-man roster this offseason, but the White Sox needed a spot starter, and he will get the call with a corresponding roster move to be determined. Covey has a shiny 2.95 ERA at Triple-A, but his 5.15 FIP and below-average 18 percent strikeout rate do a better job illustrating how good he has been. He should be avoided in most formats, and could be sent back to Triple-A after the twin bill.
Feb 17 2018White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Covey will get opportunities during spring training to prove he belongs in the major league, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.Covey, a Rule 5 draft pick last year, stayed with Chicago for the entire season, but his numbers suggest he's not yet ready for prime time. In 18 games -- 12 of them starts -- the right-hander finished 0-7 with a 7.78 ERA. That outcome was utterly predictable given that Covey entered 2017 with just six games of experience at Double-A. The organization no longer needs to harbor him on the major league roster, so we fully expect the White Sox to allow him to develop in the minors.
Sep 28 2017Covey gave up four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Thursday. While this wasn't a particularly strong performance, Covey at least allowed the White Sox to hang around, leaving the door open for a late-inning rally. Covey dropped all seven of his decisions this season and has posted the lowest K-BB% among the 262 major-league arms with at least 60 innings pitched in 2017. It's hard to imagine he will get another look in a big-league rotation.
Sep 23 2017Covey (0-7) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three batters through six innings to take the loss against Kansas City on Saturday. After a stint pitching out of the bullpen, Covey has now started three consecutive games and allowed 12 runs through 15.1 innings. However, it's worth noting that the 26-year-old right was clearly better Saturday than he was in his previous two outings. Covey's 7.83 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 5.0 K/9 makes him a high-risk fantasy option for his next projected start against the Angels at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Sep 17 2017Covey (0-6) allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks across 3.2 innings while taking the loss Sunday against the Tigers. He struck out three.Covey constantly put men aboard and was scored upon at least once in all four innings in which he pitched. He threw just 51 percent of his pitches for strikes, tying the season high in free passes he set in his previous outing. Covey has been given the opportunity to contribute down the stretch, but he has allowed 19 runs over his last 19.1 innings to raise his ERA to an unsightly 8.18 for the year. He is scheduled to remain in the rotation for Saturday's start against the Royals.
Sep 12 2017Covey (0-5) allowed four runs on two hits and four walks across 5.2 innings while earning the loss Tuesday against the Royals. He recorded one strikeout.Covey struggled mightily in the first inning, loading the bases before allowing a one-out grand slam to Brandon Moss. He bounced back nicely thereafter and only allowed two more baserunners, but enough damage was done to sink him to a loss. Covey had come out of the bullpen in his previous six appearances, and while his line Tuesday is nothing special, his persistence should keep him in the rotation for Sunday's start against the Tigers.
Sep 11 2017Covey will start Tuesday's game against the Royals, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports. The White Sox have been out of playoff contention for quite a while, so they'll use the final month of the season as a testing ground for some of their younger starting options. The 26-year-old Covey will probably need to perform well in the majority of his outings the rest of the way to warrant a lengthy look for a rotation role by the time next spring arrives. Covey's status as a Rule 5 pick is likely the only reason he's maintained a spot on the active roster when he hasn't been hurt this season, as his 8.08 ERA and 1.80 WHIP across 49 innings certainly haven't helped him curry favor with the White Sox. Given those results, Covey seems more likely to do harm than good for fantasy owners in any starts he receives down the stretch, but the White Sox are nonetheless inclined to give him the chance to prove himself, as the pitcher he'll replace in the rotation, the 33-year-old Mike Pelfrey, doesn't factor into the organization's future plans.
Aug 18 2017Covey struck one over 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in Thursday's 9-8 loss to Texas.Covey was making his first appearance since coming off the disabled list earlier this week. He had been a starter for the White Sox prior to going on the disabled list with an oblique injury, but appears to be a long reliever now. That could change after Thursday's starter, Reynaldo Lopez, left the game with an injury. Covey could return to the rotation, although the White Sox have some young prospect arms that could benefit from some major-league innings over the final few weeks of the season.
Aug 15 2017Covey was activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday, MLB.com reports. The White Sox haven't officially announced their plans for Covey, but it's expected that the Rule 5 pick will work in long relief after previously making eight starts before landing on the disabled list in May with a strained oblique. While Covey pitched well during his five-game rehab assignment, the 8.12 ERA (7.87 FIP) he supplied in 37.2 innings with the White Sox prior to suffering the injury suggests he's probably not ready for a meaningful role in the big leagues.
Aug 7 2017Covey (oblique) is transferring his rehab assignment to Triple-A Charlotte, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Covey, who kicked off a rehab assignment with in Arizona last week, compiled five strikeouts through five scoreless innings (three starts) with the White Sox's rookie-level affiliate. He's been sidelined since May 23 with an oblique injury, so he'll likely need a few outings with the Knights before he is ready to rejoin the big club. Barring any injuries to the major-league starting rotation, Covey will likely slot back into White Sox's bullpen after compiling an 8.12 ERA and 1.81 WHIP through eight starts with the big club earlier in the season.
Aug 1 2017Covey (oblique) began a rehab assignment with the White Sox's rookie-level Arizona League affiliate Monday, tossing a scoreless innings. It marked Covey's first game action since May 23, with his oblique injury sidelining him longer than the White Sox initially projected. After a number of the White Sox's starting pitchers were sidelined due to injury coming out of spring training, Covey was able to win a rotation spot, but the Rule 5 pick didn't show much promise in his eight outings, compiling an 8.12 ERA and 1.81 WHIP. Unless the injuries pile up again by the time he's ready to return from the disbaled list, Covey will likely find himself in a bullpen role with the White Sox.
Jul 15 2017Covey (oblique) was able to throw off the mound Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of MLB.com reports.Covey was initially placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 26 with a strained left oblique, but he hasn't been able to gain much ground over the past month and a half. Manager Rick Renteria said that the team will continue to take it easy with the 25-year-old, but they'll begin building his throwing program back up as he recovers. There has yet to be a definitive timetable set for Covey, but he will likely be reevaluated in the coming weeks once he starts advancing on his program.
May 31 2017Covey (oblique) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Covey got through Wednesday's session without any issues, so he'll head to extended spring training to continue rehabbing. He remains without a timetable for his return, though one should start to materialize as he starts to ramp up his throwing in Arizona.
May 26 2017The White Sox placed Covey on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a strained left oblique.Covey was removed from his Tuesday outing by trainers after giving up four earned runs in 2.1 innings. The White Sox are calling up Tyler Danish from Triple-A Charlotte to start the second game of Friday's doubleheader but should provide an update on who'll fill in for subsequent outings.
May 23 2017Covey was removed from Tuesday's outing in Arizona due to left oblique soreness and he will be reevaluated Wednesday, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports. He was visited by Chicago's training staff after being tagged for four earned runs over 2.1 innings and was ultimately removed from the outing. Counting this start, Covey has now allowed 13 earned runs over 37.2 innings this season. Wednesday's evaluation from the training staff should shed light on Covey's availability for his next turn in the rotation.
May 23 2017Covey exited Tuesday's start against Arizona in the third inning with an undisclosed issue, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The right-hander called out for the trainer after inducing a groundout to start the third inning Tuesday and was subsequently replaced by Chris Beck. The White Sox have yet to announce the specifics on Covey's injury, but there will likely be an update later in the game. Covey allowed two home runs and four earned runs prior to his exit.
May 19 2017Covey allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking one over six innings in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Seattle.Covey, who allowed a third-inning solo home run, was pitching one of his better games until the fifth inning -- the third time through the order -- when Jean Segura took him deep for a three-run homer. Other than the fifth, he was pretty efficient, needing only 87 pitches to get through six innings, the second time in seven starts he's pitched at least six innings. Unfortunately, two of those pitches resulted in homers. It was the fourth straight start in which he's allowed multiple homers. He's been taken deep 11 times in 35.1 innings, tied for fourth in MLB. The rookie right-hander has managed to dodge the ax for a couple of turns through the rotation and will get another chance next Tuesday in Arizona.
May 14 2017Covey allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine batters during Saturday's win over the Padres. He did not factor into the decision. After striking out just 11 batters through 25 innings over his first five starts, this was a breakout showing in the strikeouts column. However, Covey's 7.98 ERA and 1.88 WHIP are crippling ratios, and he also posted an underwhelming 6.4 K/9 through 369 innings in the minors. Covey lines up for a road start against Seattle next week.
