May 30 2023Engel signed a minor-league contract Tuesday with the Mariners, Mike Curto of the Tacoma Rainiers reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has already reported to Triple-A Tacoma and is in the starting lineup Tuesday night against the Triple-A affiliate of the Giants. The 31-year-old outfielder was released by the Padres last week, having spent most of his time with that organization stuck in recovery mode from a March hamstring strain.
May 24 2023The Padres released Engel on Wedensday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old outfielder held a .620 OPS in Triple-A and went 0-for-6 at the plate in his brief major-league stint. Engel now has the opportunity to sign on with another team as organizational depth.
May 20 2023Engel was designated for assignment by the Padres on Saturday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel comes off the 40- and 26-man roster after the Padres activated Jose Azocar (elbow) off the 10-day injured list. Engel has appeared in just five games with the Padres, and the outfielder didn't pick up a hit in his six at-bats in those contests. If he goes unclaimed, Engel could report back to Triple-A El Paso to provide some organizational depth.
May 5 2023Engel (hamstring) was reinstated off the 10-day injured list by the Padres on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel ended up missing well over a month with his hamstring strain. The outfielder will take the place of Jose Azocar with Azocar placed on the 10-day IL with left elbow inflammation. Engel should operate as a backup outfielder now that he's back on the roster.
Mar 30 2023Engel (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel suffered a left hamstring strain at the end of spring training and will miss at least the first couple weeks of the 2023 regular season.
Mar 11 2023Engel (calf) will bat eighth and play left field Saturday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel had been sitting out of spring action due to a right calf strain. Barring setbacks, he should still have time to build up by Opening Day. He should serve as the Padres' fourth or fifth outfielder this season.
Mar 1 2023Engel has yet to make a Cactus League appearance due to a strained right calf, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear when Engel might be cleared for game action, but given that he derives most of his value from his legs, the Padres surely will proceed cautiously. If healthy, Engel is expected to operate as an extra outfielder for the Friars.
Jan 24 2023Engel signed a one-year contract with the Padres on Jan. 6. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was non-tendered by the White Sox earlier this offseason but has managed to land another major-league contract. The 31-year-old brings good defense and speed to the table, although he hasn't been able to put either to as much use as he'd like the last couple years due to a multitude of hamstring problems. Engel figures to back up at all three outfield spots and could see some starts against left-handed pitching.
Nov 18 2022The White Sox declined to tender Engel a contract for 2023, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Known primarily as a defensive specialist, Engel put together a couple surprisingly-good offensive season in 2020 and 2021 before his performance at the dish cratered in 2022 (.579 OPS). Given his ability to play all three outfield spots, Engel figures to draw some interest in free agency.
Sep 6 2022Engel entered Monday's 3-2 win over Seattle as a pinch runner and recorded a stolen base ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel entered the game as a pinch runner for Andrew Vaughn in the eighth inning and proceeded to steal third base -- his 12th stolen bag of the season. Engel is buried on the outfield depth chart when both Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert are available, and he has maintained only a .598 OPS across 225 plate appearances on the season when given an opportunity.
Aug 14 2022Engel went 0-for-4 with a stolen base in a 5-3 win Sunday over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel reached on a force out and stole second base in the second. It was his 11th stolen base in 13 attempts this season. Sunday was just his third start in the last 18 contests. Since the All-Star break, the 30-year-old is 3-for-28 with 13 strikeouts. For the season his slash line has dropped to .235/.286/.337 and he appears to have turned into nothing more than a late-inning defensive replacement for the White Sox.
Jul 30 2022Engel isn't in the lineup Saturday against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has gone 2-for-14 with two runs, a steal and seven strikeouts since the All-Star break and is on the bench for a third consecutive game. AJ Pollock is starting in center field and batting third.
Jul 27 2022Engel isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has gone 2-for-14 with two runs, a stolen base and seven strikeouts over five games since the All-Star break and is getting a breather Wednesday. Leury Garcia is starting in center field and batting eighth.
Jul 26 2022Engel went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel got aboard with a single in the seventh inning. He then stole second -- his 10th theft of the year -- and scored what would be the game-winning run on a Yoan Moncada double. Engel has gone a paltry 2-for-14 with seven strikeouts in five games since the All-Star break, so his grip on regular playing time is likely getting a bit thin. The veteran outfielder owns a .247/.297/.357 slash line with two home runs, 14 RBI and 26 runs scored through 195 plate appearances. Engel should still be the White Sox's preferred center fielder until Luis Robert (head) returns.
Jul 23 2022Engel isn't starting the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel started Saturday's matinee and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He'll get a breather for the second game while AJ Pollock starts in center field and bats seventh.
Jul 18 2022Engel went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored Sunday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel picked up 13 at-bats across the White Sox's four-game set with the Twins due to Luis Robert's (head) absence. Engel took advantage by collecting seven hits while also tallying a homer, four RBI and three runs scored. His primary value has come from stolen bases this season -- he has nine across 68 games -- and he could remain a consistent part of the lineup so long as Robert is sidelined.
Jul 15 2022Engel went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer Friday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel entered the game after Luis Robert was forced out due to lightheadedness. Engel took advantage of the opportunity, slugging his second homer of the season in his final plate appearance of the game. He is rarely in the starting lineup when the White Sox are fully healthy, but Engel would be the likely beneficiary if Robert remains sidelined.
Jul 4 2022Engel (hamstring) drew a walk and scored a run in Monday's 6-3 extra-inning loss to the Twins. He was also caught stealing once. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel missed 11 days with the hamstring strain. He entered the contest as a pinch runner for Gavin Sheets in the seventh inning, but Engel got caught between second and third base when the Twins turned an 8-5 triple play. The 30-year-old outfielder had another baserunning mistake when he was caught stealing (on a review) to end the ninth. Engel is likely to see a limited role now that he's healthy again, though the righty hitter could push the lefty-hitting Sheets for playing time in right field. Engel has a .240/.302/.349 slash line with nine stolen bases, a home run, 10 RBI and 19 runs scored through 159 plate appearances.
Jun 23 2022Engel was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel had a part-time role in the White Sox's outfield recently but he sustained a right hamstring injury during Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. He'll be forced to miss at least a week and a half after being diagnosed with a strain, but a timetable for his return isn't yet clear. Gavin Sheets was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday and will provide additional depth in the outfield while Engel is sidelined.
Jun 22 2022Engel was removed in the top of the fourth inning of Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays with right hamstring soreness. He struck out in his only plate appearance before exiting. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was the second White Sox starter to depart before the midway point of the game, as shortstop Danny Mendick also left early with right knee discomfort. Both players will be re-evaluated following the contest before the White Sox offer an update on the extent of their respective injuries. Engel has been filling a part-time role in the Chicago outfield of late, but his opportunities are likely to take a hit soon with Eloy Jimenez (hamstring) nearing a return from the 10-day injured list.
Jun 21 2022Engel went 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, an RBI and two stolen bases in a 7-6 win Tuesday against Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel made it on base in all but one of his plate appearances and swiped his eighth and ninth bases. He's reached base safely in his last four starts, going 6-for-18 in that span. Tuesday, he hit sixth in Chicago's lineup for the third time in his last four appearances.
Jun 13 2022Engel is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Back on bench after striking out across his three at-bats in Sunday's 8-6 loss to the Rangers, Engel looks to be the White Sox's clear No. 4 outfielder behind Luis Robert, Andrew Vaughn and AJ Pollock. The righty-hitting Engel may still have a path to playing time against left-handed pitching, but he's likely worth rostering only in AL-only leagues at this point.
May 29 2022Engel went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a walk and a stolen base in a 5-4 win Sunday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel swiped his sixth bag of the season in the fifth inning and drove in the tying run in the 11th with a single. The outfielder has found his way at the plate over the last 17 games, compiling a .280/.333/.420 slash line with three stolen bases while primarily hitting in the bottom third of the lineup. For the season, he has a .657 OPS, which is slightly better than his .642 career mark.
May 27 2022Engel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored Thursday against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has been a regular in the lineup for the last three games with Luis Robert (illness) sidelined. He had failed to take advantage of the opportunity prior to Thursday, though he turned that around by recording his third multi-hit game of the season. Engel has also swiped five bases on the campaign across 39 games, and he should remain a threat on the basepaths when he gets consistent plate appearances.
May 24 2022Engel will start in center field and bat ninth Tuesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel had faded into a fourth-outfielder role following Andrew Vaughn's recent return from the 10-day injured list, but Luis Robert's (illness) move to the COVID-19-related IL on Tuesday reopens a window of playing time for Engel. With general manager Rick Hahn noting that he doesn't expect Robert to be ready to return from the IL until next week, Engel could be in line to start all five of Chicago's games this week. Leury Garcia profiles as the next man up in center field behind Engel, but the White Sox have preferred to deploy Garcia as their main second baseman ahead of Josh Harrison of late.
May 17 2022Engel is out of the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel will retreat to the bench for the first game of the twin bill after he started in right field in five of the previous six contests. With Andrew Vaughn (hand) recently returning from the 10-day injured list, Engel is expected to move into more of a fourth-outfielder role, but he should still pick up regular starts against left-handed pitching at the expense of the lefty-hitting Gavin Sheets.
May 16 2022Engel went 1-for-4 with a stolen base Monday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was in the lineup for the fifth time in the last six games, and he's picked up three starts against righties and two against southpaws. He's collected five hits across 20 at-bats in that span, but most intriguingly tallied two stolen bases. Engel is still likely to settle into a fourth outfielder role for the White Sox, though the team has opted to rotate its lineup enough for him to pick up playing time in the short term.
May 15 2022Engel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Sunday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel took Nestor Cortes yard in the eighth inning to record his first home run of the season. He's started four of the team's last five games despite Andrew Vaughn's return, instead taking time from Gavin Sheets. The pair will battle for playing time at a combination of a corner outfield spot and designated hitter so long as Eloy Jimenez (hamstring) is sidelined. While Engel won't provide much in terms of power, he has stolen four bases across only 73 plate appearances this season.
May 14 2022Engel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has only one multi-hit game this season, but he has collected a base knock in eight of his past 10 contests. The outfielder has also racked up four thefts on the season without being caught. Engel's career high for swipes in a campaign is 16, which he recorded in 2018.
May 9 2022Engel is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel is on the bench for the third time in four games and doesn't look like he'll play regularly against right-handed pitching, even with Chicago without two of its everyday outfielders in Eloy Jimenez (hamstring) and Andrew Vaughn (hand). As a result of the absences of Jimenez and Vaughn, the White Sox have been deploying top catcher Yasmani Grandal more frequently at designated hitter of late, which has resulted in Gavin Sheets poaching more starts from Engel in the corner outfield.
May 8 2022Engel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thanks to injuries to Eloy Jimenez (hamstring) and Andrew Vaughn (hand), Engel has enjoyed a near-everyday role in the outfield to begin May. Though he's on the bench for the series finale in Boston, Engel has still been able to pick up four starts in Chicago's last six contests.
May 6 2022Engel went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base Friday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel had started Chicago's last three games, though he was out of the lineup Friday and entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. He didn't collect a hit in his initial plate appearance, but singled to lead off the eighth frame, stole second base and then scored. Engel has swiped three bags without being caught early this season. Though he's hitting only .224 with very little power, Engel has collected five hits across his last 17 at-bats.
May 4 2022Engel will start in right field and bat second in Wednesday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has been the main beneficiary of Andrew Vaughn's (hand) lingering absence, as the 30-year-old will stick in the lineup for a third consecutive contest. In his previous two starts, Engel went 2-for-7 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run.
Apr 17 2022Engel went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, a walk and a run scored in a 9-3 loss Sunday against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel walked in the third and singled and scored in the fifth, stealing second each time he reached base. He batted ninth and played right field. The 30-year-old has four starts this year, evenly split between left-handed and right-handed starters.
Apr 13 2022Engel will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox are including Engel in the lineup for the second time in five games this season. Both of Engel's starts have come against left-handed pitching, and he looks as though he'll continue to fill the short side of a platoon in the corner outfield with Gavin Sheets while AJ Pollock (hamstring) is on the shelf.
Mar 24 2022Engel (shoulder) will start in right field and bat eighth in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Giants, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel underwent a shoulder cleanup procedure in early November, but he'll be able to make his Cactus League debut against San Francisco on Thursday. After the 30-year-old avoided arbitration with the White Sox by agreeing to a one-year, $2 million contract Tuesday, he looks set to fill at least a part-time role for the team in 2022. At this point, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert and Andrew Vaughn look to have locks on everyday roles in two of the everyday spots in the outfield and designated hitter, leaving the likes of Engel, Leury Garcia and Gavin Sheets to jockey for playing time at the other outfield spot.
Mar 22 2022Engel (shoulder) agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract with the White Sox on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has yet to make his Cactus League while he builds back up from the cleanup procedure for his left shoulder that he required early in the offseason, but that won't deter the White Sox from keeping him in the fold for 2022. When healthy, Engel likely profiles as Chicago's fourth outfielder thanks to the solid defense he offers at all three spots, though he's shown some unexpected growth as a hitter over the past two seasons. Across 233 plate appearances since the start of the 2020 campaign, Engel has slashed .270/.335/.488 with 10 home runs and an 8-for-9 success rate on stolen-base attempts.
Nov 5 2021Engel had his left shoulder cleaned up after the season ended but is expected to be ready for the start of next season, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel missed over a month in the second half with a shoulder injury and evidently wasn't fully healthy even after he returned. He should fill a part-time role again next year if he recovers as anticipated, as he's hit .270/.335/.488 in 75 games across the last two seasons.
Sep 30 2021Engel started in right field and went 0-for-3 in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel returned to the lineup after nursing a sore leg since last Friday. Injuries have limited Engel to 37 games, though he's been productive when healthy. with an .827 OPS.
Sep 29 2021Engel (leg) is starting Wednesday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was held out of the last five contests due to leg discomfort, but he was available off the bench if needed Tuesday. He'll start in right field and bat ninth in Wednesday's series finale.
Sep 28 2021Engel (leg) is available off the bench for Tuesday's game against the Reds, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel hasn't appeared in any of the last four games due to discomfort in his leg, but he took batting practice Sunday. Manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday that the 29-year-old is "ready to go" and will be in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against Cincinnati.
Sep 24 2021Engel won't play Friday in Cleveland due to discomfort in his leg, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel had only just returned from a shoulder injury Tuesday and didn't make it long before another issue popped up. The issue, which popped up while he ran the bases, doesn't appear to be related to the shoulder problem but could be related to the hamstring troubles which sent him to the injured list twice earlier in the season. Andrew Vaughn will start in right field.
Sep 22 2021Engel started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was reinstated from the injured list Tuesday and could be in line for consistent at-bats as the primary right fielder, although the White Sox have several others capable of playing the position. Engel is deemed the best defender of the bunch and needs the work after getting just 125 plate appearances this season due to injuries.
Sep 21 2021Engel (shoulder) was activated off the injured list as expected Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has been out since mid-August but is ready to go after an eight-game rehab assignment. He'll head straight into the starting lineup, batting eighth and playing right field.
Sep 20 2021Manager Tony La Russa said Engel (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has been on the injured list with the shoulder injury over a month and will rejoin Chicago's active roster Tuesday. The 29-year-old has a .248/.339/.505 slash line with seven homers, 18 RBI, 19 runs and seven stolen bases in 33 games this season. Engel should operate as a fourth outfielder when the White Sox are fully healthy, but he could see increased playing time until Andrew Vaughn (back) can return from his own injury.
Sep 16 2021Engel (shoulder) is expected to return at some point during the White Sox's 11-game road trip that kicks off Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has made six starts while on rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte, going 2-for-19 with an RBI and a run for the Knights. "There's been some discussion because he's made enough progress," White Sox manager Tony La Russa said. "It's possible that he would join us on the road trip which starts Friday in Texas." If Engel isn't activated for this weekend's series against the Rangers, then he could be back in Detroit or Cleveland next week.
Sep 9 2021Engel (shoulder) went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was the second game on a rehab assignment for Engel, who is 2-for-7 thus far. He played center field for six innings Tuesday before being ejected along with manager Wes Helms for arguing strikes, then played seven innings in right field Wednesday. He's been out since Aug. 12, and it's unclear if there is a minimum number of at-bats or games the team feels he needs before returning to Chicago.
Sep 7 2021Engel (shoulder) begins his rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder will need a few games in the minors before returning to the White Sox in the coming days. He'll provide the team with speed off the bench and outfield depth once healthy.
Sep 6 2021Engel (shoulder) should begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte this week, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A previous report indicated Engel would commence a rehab assignment last Friday when the White Sox began a road strip, but that did not happen. There is no word on why there's been a delay.
Aug 31 2021Engel (shoulder) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Friday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear how much rehab work Engel will require, but the fact he's been on the IL since Aug. 13 suggests he'll play at least a couple games with Triple-A Charlotte before rejoining the White Sox. Once active, the 29-year-old figures to get frequent playing time in Chicago's outfield for the remainder of the season.
Aug 27 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Engel (shoulder) has made progress the last two days, but the White Sox still don't have a plan for him to go on a rehab assignment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was placed on the injured list Aug. 13, the day after the Field of Dreams game, with left shoulder inflammation. At the time, he was also diagnosed with right groin tightness, though it's unclear if his current situation is due to both injuries or one of the two. This means continued opportunities for Brian Goodwin in right field.
Aug 22 2021Manager Tony La Russa said Engel (shoulder) won't return from the 10-day injured list during the White Sox's four-game series in Toronto that begins Monday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel isn't traveling with the White Sox on the trip and will remain in Chicago to conduct his rehab. He may require a brief rehab assignment in the minors before making his return from the IL.
Aug 16 2021The White Sox placed Engel (groin) on the 10-day injured list Monday with left shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel hadn't played for the White Sox since Thursday's "Field of Dreams" game versus the Yankees, but his removal from that contest was attributed to a sore right groin. It's unclear where Engel stands in his recovery from that injury, but the inflamed non-throwing sholder is apparently the greater concern for the 29-year-old at this time. With Engel on the shelf, the lefty-hitting Brian Goodwin could be locked into a full-time role in the corner outfield, as the only other healthy reserve option (Jake Lamb) is another left-handed hitter.
Aug 12 2021Engel exited Thursday's game against the Yankees with tightness in his right groin, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel exited in the eighth inning, though it's unclear exactly when the injury occured or how serious the issue might be. Leury Garcia entered the game in Engel's place and took over in right field.
Aug 11 2021Engel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Tuesday in a loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel put the White Sox on the board in the third inning with a two-run shot to center field. The long ball was his seventh of the season and pushed his RBI total to 18. Engel has gone 5-for-13 (.385) with four runs and three stolen bases over his past four games.
Aug 6 2021Engel went 3-for-5 with a double, a run, two stolen bases, a walk and a strikeout in Friday's 8-6 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel struggled during the White Sox's last series, as he went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in two appearances against the Royals. However, he was hot in Friday's series opener by reaching base four times, and he's now stolen three bases in his last four games. Since the All-Star break, the 29-year-old has hit .245 with a home run, four doubles, five RBI, five runs and four stolen bases.
Aug 2 2021Engel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Sunday's 2-1 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel pilfered his fourth base in 25 games during the second inning but was unable to advance from there. He's hit safely in five consecutive starts and reached base in six consecutive overall. During that run, he's 6-for-17 with three walks, a home run, three RBI, three doubles, three runs, and a stolen base. With Eloy Jimenez (hamstring) day-to-day and Billy Hamilton (hamstring) added to the injured list, Engel could get regular at-bats until the expected activation of Luis Robert (hip) toward the end of the week.
Aug 1 2021Engel went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs in Saturday's 12-11 loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox received most of their offensive production from the Nos. 7 through 9 hitters in the order, with the trio of Brian Goodwin, Engel and Seby Zavala combining to go 6-for-10 with five home runs, three walks and nine RBI. Engel has picked up starts in three of the White Sox's last four games, but he'll be a prime candidate to lose work if Luis Robert (hip) is reinstated from the 60-day injured list during the upcoming week.
Jul 27 2021Engel started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was back in the lineup after missing two games with shoulder soreness. The return of Eloy Jimenez adds another body to the outfield, but it shouldn't impact Engel too much. However, the impending return of Luis Robert (hip) will have a greater impact on Engel.
Jul 26 2021Engel will start in right field and bat sixth Monday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel missed the last two games while working through a sore shoulder, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. He's expected to get another day off Tuesday before returning to the lineup Wednesday.
Jul 25 2021Engel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With no designated hitter available in Milwaukee, rookie Gavin Sheets will join Brian Goodwin and Andrew Vaughn in the outfield, leaving no room for Engel in the lineup for the second straight game. While opportunities for Engel will theoretically open up when the White Sox resume American League play during the upcoming week, Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) appears to be rapidly closing in on a return from the 60-day injured list. Once Jimenez is reinstated, he'll play regularly in left field or as a designated hitter, which will likely make Engel the odd man out for an everyday role.
Jul 24 2021Engel isn't starting Saturday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel will get a breather after he went 1-for-9 with a run, an RBI, three walks and two strikeouts across the last three games. Brian Goodwin will shift to center field while Gavin Sheets starts in right.
Jul 21 2021Engel went 0-for-1 with three walks and a run scored in Tuesday's 9-5 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel had just one walk in 15 games dating back to his 2021 debut June 6 but now has tallied four free passes over his last two games, with three of those coming Tuesday. He scored his lone run of the night on an RBI single to center by Andrew Vaughn in what was part of a five-run eighth inning for the White Sox. The 29-year-old is slashing .264/.355/.585 with five homers, 12 RBI, 11 runs scored, three steals and a 5:9 BB:K over 62 plate appearances this year.
Jul 17 2021Engel is not starting Saturday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder has gone 5-for-16 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBI in four games since returning from the injured list. Engel takes a seat while Brian Goodwin starts in center field, with Gavin Sheets filling in as the right fielder.
Jul 11 2021Engel went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel crushed his fifth long ball of the season in the fifth inning off Tyler Wells, and that means he's now gone yard in back-to-back games for the first time in 2021. In fact, all of Engel's five homers on the season have come in his last 10 games and while the sample size is small with just 13 games and 46 plate appearances, he owns an excellent 1.031 OPS.
Jul 10 2021Engel is on the bench for Saturday's game against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He takes a seat following a four-RBI showing in Friday's blowout victory. Though he's had just 42 plate appearances in 2021, Engel boasts an impressive .942 OPS. Brian Goodwin will play center field Saturday, with Gavin Sheets getting a start in right field.
Jul 9 2021Engel went 1-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Friday's 12-1 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder now has a trio of extra-base hits and has crossed the plate three times in two games since returning from the injured list. The extended absences of Luis Robert (hip) and Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) have opened the door for Engel to be a regular starter, but he's battled injuries himself and been limited to just 38 at-bats this season. Both teammates are at least a month from being activated, though, and Adam Eaton was DFA'd on Wednesday, so Engel can likely remain a regular starter for the remainder of 2021 if he continues contributing offensively.
Jul 8 2021Engel went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-1 win over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel returned to the active roster after a stay on the injured list due to a hamstring injury. He showed no issue with the hamstring, legging out a pair of doubles and stealing his second base of the season. He returned as the starter in center field and should remain there until Luis Robert (hip) is ready to contribute.
Jul 7 2021Engel (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel battled a hamstring injury for most of the first half of the season, but he returned for 10 games in June and slashed .241/.313/.552 with three homers, five runs, four RBI and a stolen base. Now that he's healthy once again, he should take over as the primary center fielder. Adam Eaton was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Jul 6 2021Manager Tony La Russa said Engel (hamstring) will be activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday to start in the series finale at Minnesota, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran outfielder was originally expected to be activated Monday, but he'll end up spending an extra two days on the shelf. Engel has been limited to only 10 games this season, but he was off to a strong start with a .241/.313/.552 slash line, three homers, four RBI, five runs and a stolen bases in 32 plate appearances.
Jul 5 2021Engel (hamstring) will be activated from the 10-day injured list no later than Wednesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder was expected to be activated Monday, but will have to wait a day or two to rejoin the White Sox. Engel, whom injuries have limited to just 10 games and 32 plate appearances in 2021, figures to be the everyday center fielder upon returning to the team's injury-plagued roster.
Jul 2 2021Engel (hamstring) said Friday that he anticipates being activated from the 10-day injured list at some point during next week's series against Cleveland, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel landed on the injured list June 22 with his second right hamstring strain of the season. He's yet to go on a rehab stint, and it now sounds like he may be in line to rejoin the club in Minnesota without heading to the minors first. Engel could see substantial playing time after being activated with Luis Robert (hip) and Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) still a ways away from returning.
Jun 22 2021Engel was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel strained the same hamstring back in spring training and didn't get to make his season debut until early June. He hit .241/.313/.552 with three homers in 10 games before being shut down again. The move was made retroactive to Sunday, so he'll be eligible to be activated on the last day of June, but it's not yet clear whether that's a possibility. Luis Gonzalez was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jun 20 2021Engel is out of the lineup Sunday at Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel and Brian Goodwin have alternated starts in center field for the past nine games, and that trend will continue Sunday with Goodwin starting and batting cleanup.
Jun 18 2021Engel is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel and Brian Goodwin have now alternated starts in center field for eight straight games. If the pattern continues, expect Engel to return to the lineup Saturday before heading back to the bench Sunday.
Jun 16 2021Engel isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel will retreat to the bench for the third time in the last five games after he went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday. According to James Fegan of The Athletic, manager Tony La Russa said that the White Sox medical staff has recommended that Engel not play in day games after starting in night games, so the outfielder still appears to have some restrictions in place with his workload after he recently returned from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for more than two months. Brian Goodwin will start in center field and bat second Wednesday in Engel's stead.
Jun 15 2021Engel went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel took Shane McClanahan deep in the fifth inning to record his third homer of the season. Since making his debut on June 6, Engel has been on an unexpected power binge, with all three of his long balls coming in his last four starts. With Billy Hamilton (oblique) sidelined, Engel projects to continue to get regular playing time.
Jun 14 2021Engel isn't starting Monday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel will retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games after he went 1-for-4 in Sunday's contest. Brian Goodwin will start in center field and bat second.
Jun 12 2021Engel is not in Saturday's lineup against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel heads to the bench despite the fact he has gone yard in back-to-back games. Brian Goodwin will start in center field and bat second.
Jun 11 2021Engel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel's seventh-inning shot increased the White Sox's lead to 4-2 and was his first hit since being activated from the injured list earlier in the week. He started in center field Thursday, the third time he's done so in four games since coming off the shelf. Engel should be in line for ample at-bats due to several injuries to regulars. The latest being second baseman Nick Madrigal, who was placed on the 60-day injured list with a hamstring tear. Madrigal's injury means Leury Garcia, who also plays center field, may be needed more in the infield. The White Sox also purchased the contract of Brian Goodwin and have Billy Hamilton (obliique) around to compete for at-bats in center field.
Jun 7 2021Engel started in center field and went 0-for-2, was hit by a pitch, and stole a base in Sunday's 3-0 win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A hamstring injury that cropped up during spring training lingered, but Engel finally made his season debut. He should be in line for plenty of starts going forward. Primary center fielder Luis Robert (hip) is out until August, and Billy Hamilton (oblique) landed on the injured list over the weekend. A defensively gifted outfielder, Engel could earn starts in center or left field, which became available when the team lost Eloy Jimenez to a pectoral injury.
Jun 6 2021Engel is in the starting lineup Sunday against the Tigers, batting eighth and playing center field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has recovered from his hamstring injury and was activated from the injured list earlier Sunday. He'll make his 2021 debut as the center fielder against the Tigers.
May 27 2021Engel (hamstring) has appeared in two games as part of a rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel homered in four at-bats Tuesday and followed up with a two-hit night Wednesday. He could get enough at-bats over the next week to be ready, but manager Tony La Russa said it could take longer than that. "I've gone through this my whole career, guys want to come back as soon as they start feeling good," La Russa said. "He's feeling good, but he needs his timing. So we'll watch very closely." Engel has been out since mid-March due to a hamstring strain and could have an everyday role upon his return. Both Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) and Luis Robert (hip) are sidelined long term.
May 23 2021Engel (hamstring) will join Triple-A Charlotte on Monday to begin a rehab assignment, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has reached the final stage of his rehab from the Grade 2 hamstring strain he sustained late in spring training. The outfielder looked to be close to returning from the injured list in early May, but he suffered a setback that resulted in his injury being upgraded to a Grade 3 strain. Chicago initially planned to have Engel work as a fourth or fifth outfielder this season, but he may be thrust into a more prominent role than anticipated after Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) and Luis Robert (hip) suffered injuries that will sideline them until after the All-Star break.
May 19 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday that he expects that Engel (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment next week, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has been on the 10-day injured list since Opening Day, and he suffered a setback in early May. However, the 29-year-old has ramped up the intensity of his workouts recently, and his rehab assignment could be the final step in his recovery process. Once Engel is cleared to return, he should have plenty of opportunities with Luis Robert (hip) and Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) sidelined.
May 13 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Engel (hamstring) has ramped up the intensity of his workouts, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "He's making progress," La Russa said. "We're counting down the days until he rejoins us. I think it's going to be sometime this month." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel's return date has been pushed out a few times since he was placed on the injured list April 1, and he suffered a setback in early May. There should be plenty of opportunities available to Engel, as both Luis Robert (hip) and Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) are sidelined long term. The challenge for Engel in the past has been his ability to hit enough, but the outfielder has improved in all the major hitting categories (AVG, OBP, SLG) since his first exposure to MLB pitching. He slashed .295/.333/.477 over 36 games in 2020.
May 3 2021Engel suffered his setback in his recovery from a hamstring strain and is at least three weeks away from beginning a rehab assignment, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a poorly-timed setback for the White Sox, as Luis Robert was ruled out for most of the season with a strained hip flexor Monday. Engel could be the primary center fielder once he's ready to go, but that won't happen until the last few days of May at the earliest.
Apr 24 2021Engel (hamstring) is making progress, but manager Tony La Russa feels he won't be ready until early May, Brian Sandalow of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel's return date has been pushed a few times since he landed on the injured list to start the season. He had been expected to get opportunities in left field for the injured Eloy Jimenez (pectoral), but his return has been pushed from mid-April to late-April and now early-May. The White Sox are getting by with a rotation in left field, including Andrew Vaughn, Leury Garcia and now Billy Hamilton, who returned Friday from a stay on the injured list.
Apr 18 2021Engel (hamstring) isn't expected to return from the 10-day injured list until the back end of the White Sox's upcoming nine-game homestand, which runs from April 23 through May 2, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel is gradually beginning to ramp up the intensity of his workouts, but he still hasn't been cleared for full sprinting while he manages a strained right hamstring. Once he's back in the fold for Chicago, Engel will likely serve as a fourth or fifth outfielder.
Apr 11 2021White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Sunday that he doesn't expect Engel (hamstring) to return from the team's six-game road trip, which begins Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hahn anticipates that Engel's hamstring strain will keep him on the shelf for a four-game home series with Cleveland to begin this week in addition to road trips to Boston and Cleveland, but the outfielder could be ready to go by late April for the start of the White Sox's next homestand. Whenever he's given the green light to return from the 10-day injured list, Engel will likely be ticketed for a fourth-outfielder role.
Mar 21 2021Manager Tony La Russa said Engel (hamstring) will be sidelined at least a couple weeks, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old exited Saturday's spring game with a right hamstring strain, and the injury will prevent him from being available for Opening Day. A two-week recovery would allow Engel to return for the second series of the season, which begins April 5 at Seattle, though he could end up missing more time.
Mar 20 2021Engel was diagnosed with a strained right hamstring Saturday and will undergo a further evaluation Sunday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's already the second injury of camp for Engel, who missed a few days in early March with ankle inflammation. The severity of this particular issue isn't yet clear, but anything more than a day-to-day injury at this stage of spring would likely send him to the injured list to start the year.
Mar 4 2021Engel (ankle) will return to the lineup to bat ninth and play center field Thursday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel played in the White Sox's spring opener but was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with mild inflammation in his right ankle. The diagnosis didn't sound particularly serious at the time, so it's no surprise to see him back in action just two days later. His preparation for Opening Day shouldn't be meaningfully impacted.
Mar 2 2021Engel is battling mild inflammation in his right ankle, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The issue explains why Engel was scratched from the lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Rangers. It doesn't appear serious enough to impact his readiness for Opening Day.
Dec 30 2020Engel signed a one-year, $1.38 million contract with the White Sox on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel impressed at the plate while appearing in 36 games for the White Sox in 2020, slashing .295/.333/.477 with three home runs and 12 RBI. He was able to come to an agreement with the club prior to arbitration. The 29-year-old should serve as outfield depth for Chicago to begin the 2021 season.
Sep 29 2020Engel went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in a win over the A's in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He got the start in right field with Leury Garcia in left, replacing Nomar Mazara and Eloy Jimenez (foot) in the outfield corners. Engel came through in a big way while batting near the bottom of the order and this may earn Engel another start in Game 2, even if Jimenez is ready. Mazara has just a .214/.257/.300 slash line in the month of September.
Sep 26 2020Engel started in left field for the injured Eloy Jimenez (foot) and went 1-for-3 with a double in Friday's 10-0 loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez will not play in the season-ending series against the Cubs due to a right mid-foot sprain, which could extend into the postseason. Engel or Jarrod Dyson will start in left field over the final two games. Engel is enjoying his finest professional season, which has been aided by a .361 BABIP.
Sep 25 2020Engel entered Thursday's game after Eloy Jimenez departed with soreness in his right foot. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jimenez will be evaluated Friday and could miss time over the weekend. In that case, the right-handed hitting Engel or lefty Jarrod Dyson will start in left field.
Sep 16 2020Engel started in right field and went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel typically starts against left-handers but replaced Nomar Mazara against righty Randy Dobnak. Mazara, who is 2-for-19 over the last six games, is batting a soft .232/.298/.272 over 28 starts this season. After Tuesday's performance, Engel is batting .306/.342/.444. He's outhitting Mazara and is considered the better defender of the two.
Sep 15 2020Engel went 1-for-1 with an RBI in Monday's 3-1 win over Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel entered as a pinch hitter for Nomar Mazara in the eighth inning when left-hander Taylor Rogers came in to pitch and delivered the game-winning run. The righty-hitting Engel came up to the majors with a reputation of an all-glove, no-bat outfielder, but he's turned himself into a competent hitter. He's a lineup regular against left-handers and has a .900 OPS against southpaws. He's batting a career-high .294 and has improved as a hitter each season since becoming a major-leaguer in 2017.
Sep 4 2020Engel started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's 11-6 win over Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per usual, Engel started with the White Sox facing a left-hander. He and Nomar Mazara are platooning in right, so Mazara should return to action Friday against Royals right-hander Brady Singer. Engel is batting .290/.333/.452 over 66 plate appearances in 2020.
Aug 21 2020Engel started in center field and went 1-for-4 with a double in Thursday's 9-0 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel started a second straight game in center while Luis Robert nursed a sore hand. Robert could return Friday, but Engel could then move to right field, as the White Sox are scheduled to face Cubs left-hander Jon Lester. The White Sox's primary starter in right field, the left-handed hitting Nomar Mazara, notoriously struggles against southpaws.
Aug 19 2020Engel started in center field and went 0-for-3 in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel returned from the COVID-19 injured list in time to fill in for the injured Luis Robert (hand) in center field. White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Robert was "just a little sore," suggesting he didn't play Wednesday out of an abundance of caution. Engel could be back to a reserve role as early as Thursday's finale against Detroit.
Aug 17 2020The White Sox placed Engel on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, Adam Hoge of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel self-reported Monday that he may have been in contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus, so he'll isolate from the team until he clears all COVID-19-related protocols. The outfielder has thus far experienced no symptoms of the virus, but the White Sox are still waiting on the results of his latest COVID-19 test. Chicago selected Luis Gonzalez's contract from their alternate training site to provide an extra body in the outfield until Engel is cleared to return.
Aug 12 2020Engel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old had started four of the White Sox's past five games, but he'll likely transition into more of a reserve role now that Nomar Mazara has moved past a foot concern and Edwin Encarnacion (shoulder) has reclaimed the everyday designated-hitter job following a one-week absence from the lineup. Engel could still end up settling into the short side of a platoon with Mazara, who is a career .231/.271/.360 hitter against left-handed pitching.
Aug 7 2020Engel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-0 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel's eighth-inning blast doubled the lead in the low-scoring contest. The outfielder is up to two homers, four RBI and six runs scored in 10 games this year. With Nomar Mazara (foot) expected to return Saturday, Engel will likely retreat to a bench role going forward.
Aug 2 2020Engel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After making three straight starts, Engel will cede right field to Nicky Delmonico as the White Sox wrap up their series with the Royals. Both Engel and Delmonico could be destined for full-time bench roles as soon as the Sox's next series against the Brewers, as Nomar Mazara (illness) could be activated from the 10-day injured list within the next few days.
Jul 31 2020Engel went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 3-2 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getting the start in right field and batting eighth, Engel took rookie Kris Bubic deep in the second inning for his first homer of the year, and that was all the run support Dallas Keuchel and the White Sox bullpen needed. The 28-year-old has started four of the last five games, but with Nomar Mazara (illness) close to coming off the injured list and Nick Madrigal's promotion pushing Leury Garcia off second base, Engel may have to settle for a short-side platoon role at best once the team's outfield is at full strength.
Jul 26 2020Engel (undisclosed) entered as a replacement and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in Sunday's 14-2 loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel was originally part of the starting lineup but removed for undisclosed reasons. He was needed after Eloy Jimenez left the game with light-headeness, which suggests the reason behind Engel's removal was not serious.
Jul 22 2020With the White Sox placing Nomar Mazara (illness) on the 10-day injured list, Engel is in position to start Friday's opener against the Twins in right field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has been the primary fill-in for Mazara, who has not been available for the last four days because he's "under the weather," per manager Rick Renteria. Leury Garcia also filled in for Mazara, but he's the presumptive starter at second base. If Mazara's illness is related to COVID-19, he could resume play at any time after clearing protocols, but he's considerably short on time with respect to being available for Opening Day.
Jul 20 2020Engel started in right field in Sunday's exhibition game against the Cubs, replacing Nomar Mazara (illness), Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mazara reported feeling under the weather, so manager Rick Renteria went with Engel, who is expected to be the White Sox's fourth outfielder in 2020. He could turn into the right-handed-hitting platoon partner with Mazara, who has well documented issues against left-handers. Engel homered in the game.
Apr 5 2020Engel could serve as a platoon partner in right field if Nomar Mazara struggles against left-handed pitching, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox plan to let Mazara start the season as the everyday right fielder, but they are cognizant of his career .633 OPS against southpaws. If Mazara's issues against left-handers persist in 2020, manager Rick Renteria could turn to Engel, the 28-year-old defensive wiz who posted an .841 OPS against lefties in 2019. He hit well during spring training, going 10-for-33 with two home runs, two doubles, 11 RBI and eight runs scored over 35 plate appearances. Engel has never hit enough during the stretches when the White Sox needed him daily, but there's potential for a part-time opportunity in 2020.
Feb 27 2020Engel started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's spring game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel finished out 2019 as a regular in the lineup, muscling up to .263/.317/.461 during the month of September, when he hit four of his six home runs. He's shown the ability to hit consistently in short bursts but never over an extended period of time. Engel is looking to become Chicago's fourth outfielder and defensive replacement when needed. If he hits with any regularity, Engel could serve as the right-handed component in a right field platoon with the left-handed hitting Nomar Mazara.
Sep 24 2019Engel is not in the lineup Tuesday against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel has moved into the starting role in center field and has rewarded the White Sox with a 1.050 OPS and four homers over his last 12 games. Leury Garcia slides to center field on this occasion, with Daniel Palka starting in right.
Sep 22 2019Engel went 2-for-4 in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel started in center field for the 13th time in the last 15 games, and he has hit well enough to maintain a presence in the lineup. Hitting with regularity has always been a hurdle to consistent playing time for Engel, who is batting .265 with four home runs and nine RBI during that stretch.
Sep 18 2019Engel is not starting Wednesday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After starting 10 straight contests, Engel now hits the bench for the second time in three days. Leury Garcia again moves to center field Wednesday, with Daniel Palka in right.
Sep 16 2019Engel will be on the bench Monday in Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel hits the bench after starting 10 straight games. Leury Garcia slides to center field in his absence, with Ryan Goins starting in right.
Sep 13 2019Engel went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-7 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The center fielder went deep in the third inning to cap a three-run frame for the White Sox that knocked Mariners starter Yusei Kikuchi from the game. Engel also singled in the second, but he was caught stealing. The 27-year-old has assembled a modest four-game hitting streak, going 6-for-16 with two homers, two RBI and three runs scored. For the year, he has four homers, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored in 185 at-bats.
Sep 4 2019Engel sits for the second straight game Wednesday against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Engel's .231/.306/.340 season slash line through 174 plate appearances certainly isn't enough to guarantee an everyday role. Leury Garcia will again slide to center field, with Daniel Palka starting in right.
Sep 2 2019Engel went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Braves.
Aug 31 2019Engel went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's 10-7 loss to the Braves.
Aug 29 2019Engel will start in center field and bat ninth Thursday against the Twins.
Aug 25 2019Engel will start in center field and bat eighth Sunday against the Rangers.
Aug 24 2019Engel went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Friday's 8-3 win over the Rangers.
Aug 12 2019Engel was a late addition to the starting lineup Sunday, replacing Leury Garcia (illness) in center field. He went 0-for-3 in a 2-0 loss to the Athletics.
Aug 7 2019Engel started in center field in both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Tigers, going a collective 2-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI and a stolen base. He also

Jul 31 2019Engel is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Mets.

Jul 21 2018Engel is out of the lineup for Saturday's game at Seattle.Engel is 1-for-16 with six strikeouts over his last seven, so he'll take a seat against starter Felix Hernandez (back) on Saturday. The 26-year-old has a .215/.269/.299 slash line in 251 at-bats this season, with his only real upside being the 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts.
Jul 15 2018Engel will start in center field and bat ninth Sunday against the Royals. After being benched for three consecutive games earlier in the week, Engel rejoined the lineup Saturday with lefty Danny Duffy on the mound for Kansas City. Despite going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the contest, Engel will earn another starting assignment Sunday, this time versus a right-hander (Burch Smith). It appears Engel still has the edge for the primary center-field role over Charlie Tilson, but Engel's deplorable .221/.277/.307 season slash line largely makes him a fantasy sinkhole outside of the stolen bases category (10 steals in 13 attempts).
Jul 13 2018Engel is not in the lineup for Friday's game against Kansas City.Engel will head to the bench for the third straight game as Charlie Tilson garners the starting nod in center field Friday. Engel has a .224/.280/.311 slash line with 10 stolen bases in 241 at-bats this season
Jul 11 2018Engel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's matchup with St. Louis.Engel will get his second consecutive day off as Charlie Tilson is slated to start in center field and bat ninth. Engel has gone 4-for-18 with a double and an RBI over his last five games.
Jul 10 2018Engel is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Cardinals. He is hitting .300/.340/.400 with zero home runs and one steal in his last 50 at-bats. Charlie Tilson will start in center field and hit ninth.
Jul 5 2018Engel is not in the lineup against Houston on Thursday.Engel will receive a standard day off after going 2-for-4 with one run during Wednesday's series finale versus Cincinnati. Leury Garcia (finger) is set to man center field and bat eighth in his stead.
Jun 27 2018Engel is not in the lineup versus Minnesota on Wednesday.Engel will retreat to the bench following 15 straight starts as Charlie Tilson gets the assignment in center field for Wednesday's tilt. Over that 15-game span, Engel has hit just .163 with a .424 OPS.
Jun 24 2018Engel went 1-for-2, was hit by a pitch and stole his 10th base of the season in Saturday's 7-6 loss to Oakland.Engel is one of just 29 players with double-digit steals this season. If he were getting on base more often, Engel could be a real threat for fantasy lineups. His .269 on-base percentage is the lowest among those 29 players with double-digit steals and ranks 163rd among qualified hitters in MLB.
Jun 12 2018Engel went 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch in Monday's 4-0 loss to the Indians.Engel returned to the lineup Monday after missing four games due to a hamstring injury. He had been one of the hottest hitters in the lineup before sustaining the injury, but is still in the .230 range.
Jun 11 2018Engel (hamstring) is starting in center field and hitting ninth Monday against the Indians. As expected, Engel is back in action for the White Sox after missing the previous four games with a hamstring injury. The 26-year-old had hit .327 (16-for-49) with six extra-base hits and a pair of steals over the 14 games prior to suffering the injury, so he'll look to pick up where he left off in his return to action.
Jun 10 2018Engel (hamstring) is out of the lineup Sunday against the Red Sox.He'll be confined to the bench for the fourth straight game with the hamstring issue, paving the way for Trayce Thompson to pick up another start in center field. It's unclear if Engel is making much tangible progress in his recovery from the injury, but if he remains unavailable for the series opener Monday against Cleveland, a trip to the disabled list would grow more likely.
Jun 10 2018Engel (hamstring) has been progressing and is expected to return to the lineup Monday or Tuesday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.Engel, who has missed the last four games, had hit .327 (16-for-49) with six extra-base hits, nine runs, seven RBI and two steals over the 14 games before he was sidelined. We'll need to see if the downtime has any negative impact on his timing.
Jun 9 2018Engel (hamstring) will remain on the bench for Saturday's tilt against Boston.Engel is slated to miss his third straight game dealing with a minor hamstring issue. He'll continue to be listed as day-to-day until more news on his status surfaces.
Jun 8 2018Engel is battling a minor hamstring injury and should be considered day-to-day ahead of Saturday's game, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Engel appears to have picked up the injury during Wednesday's contest as he was left out of the starting lineup Thursday and Friday, marking his first time on the bench since the middle of May. It doesn't look like Engel will be forced to miss an extended period of time, and expect him to re-enter the starting nine once he's deemed healthy.
Jun 8 2018Engel is not in the starting nine against Boston on Friday.Engel will remain on the bench for a second straight day as Trayce Thompson gets another start in the outfield for Friday's series opener. Over 54 games this year, Engel is hitting .228/.289/.329 with two home runs, 14 RBI and eight stolen bases.
Jun 7 2018Engel is out of the lineup against the Twins on Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Engel will hit the bench for the first time since May 17 as Trayce Thompson, Daniel Palka and Charlie Tilson make up the White Sox's outfield for the series finale. Look for Engel to be back in the starting nine Friday versus Boston.
Jun 4 2018Engel went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and two RBI in Sunday's win over the Brewers.Normally a fixture at the bottom of the White Sox's batting order, Engel was slotted in the five-hole for the first time this season. He was a sub-.200 hitter for much of the season, but has turned in a two-week stretch of respectable production, prompting a promotion. Over his last 11 games, Engel is hitting .333 (13-for-39) with five extra-base hits, five RBI and nine runs scored. He's also struck out 13 times (32.5 K%) during that run, so we're reticent to announce he's figured something out, but on a team bereft of quality hitters, Engel should get his name into the lineup most days.
May 17 2018Engel is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers.Engel was originally set to start in center field and bat eighth but Rangers' starter Cole Hamels (neck) was a late scratch, prompting the White Sox to adjust their lineup. Leury Garcia takes over in center field for Chicago, batting seventh.
May 15 2018Engel is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Pirates, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Engel will head to the bench for Tuesday's series opener despite going 4-for-8 over the past two games. Leury Garcia will start in center field and hit seventh in his stead.
May 13 2018Engel batted leadoff and went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-4 loss to the Cubs.White Sox manager Rick Renteria has rotated a few players through the leadoff spot while Yoan Moncada (hamstring) is out of action. He hit the lottery Saturday when the .163-hitting Engel posted his second multi-hit game of the season. If Engel can get on base, he has the speed to make something happen as a baserunner, but that's a big "if." Engel entered Saturday's game with a .244 on-base percentage.
May 11 2018Engel is not in the lineup Friday against the Cubs.Engel has five steals so far this season, but they've come with an awful .163/.236/.213 line, making him unrosterable in all but the deepest of leagues. Leury Garcia will get the start in center field in his place.
May 8 2018Engel is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Pirates. The center fielder is hitting just .171/.247/.224 so far this season, in line with the .166/.235/.282 marks he posted in 97 games last season. Trayce Thompson will start in his place Tuesday.
May 4 2018Engel is not in the lineup against the Twins on Friday.Engel will retreat to the bench yet again, marking the fourth time in the past seven games that the 26-year-old isn't in the starting nine. Leury Garcia will draw another start in center field while batting seventh.
May 2 2018Engel is not in the starting nine against St. Louis on Wednesday.Engel will hit the bench for the third time in the past five games as Leury Garcia draws another start in center field. It's clear that Engel doesn't have a strong hold on the starting job at this point, as he's slashing just .167/.243/.212 with seven RBI and four stolen bases over 24 games this season.
Apr 29 2018Engel is out of the lineup Sunday against the Royals. With Engel on the bench for the second time in three games -- both against right-handed starters -- it's beginning to look like his role as the White Sox's everyday center fielder could be in jeopardy. Engel is hitting just .159 on the season while his primary backup, Leury Garcia, is now up to .245 after rapping out six hits in the first three games of the series. Neither player profiles as a particularly exciting fantasy option, but with the superior average and five steals to date, Garcia has been far more interesting than Engel.
Apr 28 2018Engel is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader in Kansas City.Engel is a true burner, as evidenced by his three steals in 21 games, despite a .164 batting average. Unfortunately, he is below average at every other fantasy-relevant aspect of the game, limiting his relevance to really deep leagues. He could soon be passed over on the organizational depth chart if he doesn't heat up at the plate.
Apr 22 2018Engel is out of the lineup Sunday against the Astros.Engel's stellar center-field defense has kept him atop the White Sox's depth chart this season, even though a .156/.250/.178 slash line has made him of baseball's worst-performing regulars at the plate. While Engel's absence from the lineup Sunday doesn't look to be anything more than a normal off day, his hold on the starting role may have loosened after the White Sox acquired Trayce Thompson in a waiver claim a few days ago. Rather than Thompson, it will be Leury Garcia that replaces Engel in center field Sunday, however.
Apr 20 2018Engel may cede playing time to the recently acquired Trayce Thompson, Scott Merkin and David Adler of MLB.com report.Engel's Gold Glove-caliber defense may not be enough to overcome a .179 batting average and .488 OPS. After Ryan Cordell, who had been playing center field at Triple-A Charlotte, suffered a broken clavicle and will miss two months, the White Sox made a move to add some outfield depth as insurance in case they send Engel back to the minors. The starting job remains Engel's, but we've seen more of Leury Garcia in center field lately. Thompson represents a better backup solution than Garcia, an infielder that has been moved to the outfield out of need.
Apr 17 2018Engel is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Oakland. The off day will be just Engel's third of the season. He's hitting just .188/.308/.219, with a strikeout rate (30.8 percent) that's simply not good enough for someone with as little power as he's shown so far in his big-league career. The offensive profile limits his fantasy value even in deeper leagues where his regular playing time makes him someone worth considering. Leury Garcia will start in center field Tuesday.
Apr 9 2018Engel is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays, Brain Sandalow of the Chicago Sun-TImes reports.Engel, who is just 4-for-23 to start the season, will stick on the bench for a second straight game after starting the first seven contests of the season in center field. In his stead, Leury Garcia will pick up another start, hitting seventh.
Apr 8 2018Engel is out of the lineup Sunday against the Tigers.Though he's only produced four hits while starting in each of the White Sox's first seven games, Engel looks to have a decent hold on a full-time role thanks to his stellar defense in center field. He'll get a breather in the series finale, however, paving the way for Leury Garcia to enter the lineup.
Apr 4 2018Engel went 0-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in Tuesday's 14-5 loss to the Blue Jays.Engel was in the right place at the right time to knock in his first run of the season. His groundout to shortstop plated Tim Anderson, who had stolen two consecutive bags to put him in scoring position. Engel has been starting in center field and earned the job with a strong spring when he hit four home runs with 10 RBI and a 1.155 OPS. However, those who've followed his career understood that level of production was unsustainable and without precedent in his track record. The usually light-hitting outfielder is hitless in his last eight at-bats.
Mar 23 2018Engel will open the 2018 season as the starting center fielder, Chris Gabel of MLB.com reports.Engel won the job over Ryan Cordell, who was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday. Cordell made a strong push for the job, but in the end, manager Rick Renteria wanted him to get more at-bats in the minors. Engel had good spring numbers, hitting .364 with a 1.110 OPS and four home runs, however, nothing in his track record suggests he'll continue to hit like that. Engel may eventually lose at-bats to Leury Garcia.
Mar 22 2018Engel (neck) is in the starting lineup for Thursday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks. The speedy outfielder was scratched from Wednesday's contest with neck soreness, but it seems like a day off was just what the doctor ordered. He'll resume his spot in center field with his eyes on the Opening Day starting gig at that position.
Mar 21 2018Engel was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to neck stiffness, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. No word has come forth as to how the injury was incurred or how severe it is. Engel is in the midst of a wide-open battle for the starting center field gig, so he'll need to return to action soon if he wants a good chance to claim the job.
Mar 14 2018Engel leads the White Sox with four home runs and is hitting .276 in 12 spring games, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Chicago's center field job is wide open with two weeks of spring training left, and Engel is building a case as he battles Ryan Cordell for the job. In Engel's first exposure to major league pitchers in 2017, he was challenged facing the best arms in the game. The 26-year-old finished the season on an 0-for-21 run and hit just .166 over 301 at-bats.
Mar 6 2018Engel's chances of beginning the season as the starting center fielder for the White Sox improved after Charlie Tilson was optioned to Triple-A.Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times indicates that Engel isn't necessarily a lock to earn the starting role, but he's certainly making a strong case for the job so far this spring. The speed demon is 5-for-13 with two homers and four RBI in seven spring games. This is a very unsustainable pace for Engel given his modest power totals in the minors and .166 batting average he produced in Chicago last season, but the hot start could be just what he needs to start the season on top of the depth chart.
Mar 4 2018Engel went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's game against the Padres.Engel is the frontrunner to win the starting center-field job and would be a lock if he continues to hit like he has the past two games. He's gone 4-for-6 with a pair of homers to raise his spring average to .417. It's more likely he's still the same hitter who finished his rookie 2017 season at .166. If Engel's bat doesn't catch up to his defense, expect a revolving door of options getting at-bats in center field, including Charlie Tilson and Leury Garcia.
Feb 23 2018Engel appears to be sitting atop the depth chart in center field to start spring training, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. The speedy 26-year-old made his major-league debut last season, but he could only muster a .166 batting average in 301 at-bats with Chicago. Strikeouts were a significant issue for him last season (34.8 percent strikeout rate), but it seems like the White Sox still value his defense enough to have him headline their crop of center fielders for now. However, Charlie Tilson likely offers more upside and could supplant him for playing time during the season as a result, but the White Sox appear to be content in easing Tilson into action given that he sat out all of last season. This should allow Engel to claim regular playing time at least for the earlier portion of the regular season.
Sep 16 2017Engel is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers.Engel will head to the bench following 22 consecutive starts, although he's slashed just .182/.222/.338 with two home runs, eight RBI and 34 strikeouts during that span. In his place, Alen Hanson draws the assignment in center field.
Sep 9 2017Engel went 2-for-4 with a triple in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Giants.Engel was one of three White Sox starters Friday hitting below the Mendoza line. Despite his problems at the plate, Engel has remained a regular in the lineup, starting 15 consecutive games. That he's hit .128 during that stretch ought to scare away fantasy owners, however. There just aren't many options available to manager Rick Renteria right now, though once Leury Garcia (thumb) comes off the 10-day disabled list, Renteria can keep Engel on the bench.
Aug 23 2017Engel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins.Engel receives a standard day off following seven consecutive starts in center, going 1-for-22 at the plate during that span. In his place, Leury Garcia slides over to center while Alen Hanson draws a start in left.
Aug 16 2017Engel is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.Engel is just 1-for-9 with four strikeouts over his last three contests, so he'll get the day off after starting seven straight games in center field. Leury Garcia will take over for him in center field, opening up a spot for Nicky Delmonico to pick up a start in left field.
Aug 12 2017Engel went 2-for-4 with two triples, two runs scored and an RBI in Friday's 6-3 win over the Royals. The rookie got a chance to showcase his speed on the basepaths, but otherwise it has been a rough second half for Engel, who's now slashing .167/.221/.319 in 22 games since the All-Star break. His defense in center field has kept him in the lineup most days, but don't be surprised if he begins to lose playing time down the stretch if his bat doesn't come around.
Aug 6 2017Engel is out of the lineup Sunday against the Red Sox.Engel had started eight of the White Sox's last nine contests, but he'll hit the bench after producing only two hits in 27 at-bats during that time, dropping his season average to .200. Engel's quality defense in center field could continue to earn him at least semi-regular work, but unless owners in AL-only leagues are desperate for some steals (five in six attempts this season), the 26-year-old doesn't offer much to get excited about from a fantasy perspective.
Aug 1 2017Engel is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.Engel will head to the bench for a breather after going just 6-for-36 (.167) at the plate over his last 11 starts. Leury Garcia will slide over to center field in his place while Nicky Delmonico will make his major-league debut in right field.
Jul 25 2017Engel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 3-1 win over the Cubs.Engel has been prominent in the offense the last two games with a three-run double Sunday while Monday's homer was the game-deciding hit. As we continue to wait for Leury Garcia to return from a lingering hand injury, Engel has been getting most of the starts in center field. His current two-game run, however, is an outlier. For the season, the 25-year-old Engel is batting .238/.310/.371 with three homers and nine RBI over 34 games.
Jul 23 2017Engel went 1-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Royals.Engel erased a three-run deficit with a bases-clearing double in the fifth, then came around to score later in the frame to give Chicago a temporary lead. The rookie center fielder hit out of the leadoff spot with lefty Travis Wood on the mound for Kansas City after batting ninth in each of his previous five games played.
Jul 19 2017Engel is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers. In an effort to get more lefty bats in the lineup against Dodgers right-handed starter Kenta Maeda, manager Rick Renteria will move Engel to the bench, allowing the switch-hitting Alen Hanson to pick up the start in center field. Engel is batting just .140 over his last 13 games and is expected to see a reduced role in the near future with Leury Garcia (finger) nearing a return from the disabled list.
Jul 16 2017Engel is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mariners. After starting the first two games of the series, Engel will cede center-field duties to Alen Hanson for the matinee. Engel offers little pop and is hitting just .241 over 87 at-bats with the big club this season, but his capable glove and quality speed (5-for-6 in steal attempts) will likely lock him into a near-everyday role until Leury Garcia (finger) comes off the disabled list.
Jul 16 2017Engel went 0-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and run scored in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Mariners.Engel started for the 20th time in the last 21 games as manager Rick Renteria navigates the season without an established major leaguer in center field. Leury Garcia had shown some promise but has been slow to recover from a finger injury, presenting an opportunity Engel. His speed on the basepaths has been consistent in the minors but he's not getting a green light with the White Sox. Saturday's steal was his first in 20 games since being recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on June 20. With news that Garcia may begin a rehabilitation assignment this week, Engel's window should be closing over the next couple of weeks.
Jul 3 2017Engel will lead off and play center field Monday against the Athletics. The White Sox will cycle through their third leadoff hitter in three games with manager Rick Renteria tabbing Engel for those duties after previously going with Alen Hanson and Tim Anderson. Engel has performed respectably at the plate this season with a .344 on-base percentage, but his meager minor-league track record suggests that the 25-year-old won't sustain that success for long.
Jun 26 2017Engel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Athletics.Engel has been getting regular at-bats since he was called up to Chicago for a second time a week ago due to Leury Garcia's finger injury. Garcia is eligible to be activated off the disabled list but the injury lingers, affording more opportunities for both Engel and Alen Hanson. Engel, whose homer Sunday was the first of his career in the majors, is hitting .308 (12-for-39) with four stolen bases over 14 games.
Jun 21 2017Engel, who was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, started in center field and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the the Twins.Engel is the lone natural center fielder currently on the roster after the White Sox placed Leury Garcia (hand) on the 10-day disabled list. He and Alen Hanson are expected to split the center field job while Garcia is unavailable.
Jun 20 2017Engel was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte prior to Tuesday's game against the Twins. With Leury Garcia hitting the DL with a sprained finger, Engel was promoted to offer short-term outfield depth. He has high-end speed, and stole four bases in just 22 plate appearances the last time he was up, but does not have the hitting chops to get on base at an acceptable clip over a larger sample size. Engel profiles as a fourth outfielder or Quadruple-A hitter long term.
Jun 8 2017Engel went 2-for-5 and stole two bases during Thursday's 7-5 loss to the Rays. This was just the third start for Engel since being called up two weeks ago. He entered the lineup for Leury Garcia, serving as the center fielder and batting leadoff. He has three stolen bases for the White Sox and a history of thievery in the minor leagues, but he's not going to get enough playing time to make a difference.
Jun 4 2017Engel will start in center field and lead off Sunday against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.White Sox manager Rick Renteria is handing Leury Garcia a day off, so Engel will receive the opportunity to assume Garcia's spot in the field and in the batting order. Engel will offer the White Sox some strong defense and speed, but it's not expected that he'll provide enough impact with the bat to eventually settle into an everyday role.
May 27 2017Engel was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Engel offers plus speed and solid outfield defense, but he will likely be overmatched against big-league pitching. He hit .221/.313/.448 with a 26 percent strikeout rate in 41 games at Triple-A. Tyler Saladino (back) was placed on the 10-day DL as a corresponding move.
