May 9 2025 | The Nationals placed Sims on unconditional release waivers Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The decision to cut Sims comes after he allowed three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Cardinals on Friday. The 31-year-old righty now owns an abysmal 13.86 ERA and 2.27 WHIP through 12.1 innings this season, and he's unlikely to attract more than a minor-league deal in free agency at this point. |
Sep 19 2024 | The Red Sox activated Sims (lat) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims missed a little more than three weeks of time with a right lat strain but has been cleared to rejoin the Boston bullpen after making a couple rehab appearances with Triple-A Worcester. He's collected an 8.10 ERA in 11 outings for the Red Sox and will likely be pegged for middle relief. |
Sep 16 2024 | Sims (lat) walked two and recorded a strikeout in one-third of an inning in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims is three weeks removed from going on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain, but he's ramping up in the minors and could be ready to rejoin the Boston bullpen by the end of the week. The right-hander has struggled with Boston since being acquired at the trade deadline, allowing nine runs with a 7:7 K:BB over 10 innings. |
Aug 27 2024 | The Red Sox placed Sims on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right lat strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been terrible since being acquired at the trade deadline, surrendering nine runs with a 7:7 K:BB over 10 innings. Now he will be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks, and in all likelihood, longer. |
Aug 20 2024 | Sims allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over one inning, picking up a blown save in Monday's 5-4 loss to Houston. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox seemingly were in control late, but the bullpen -- Sims and Kenley Jansen -- allowed the Astros to tie and then win the game in the final two innings. With two outs and the bases empty in the eighth inning, Sims allowed back-to-back hits that erased Boston's one-run lead. Sims was added at the trade deadline to help a faltering bullpen, and he's done fine when not facing the Astros. In three appearances against Houston while in a Boston uniform, Sims has allowed six runs on six hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. |
Aug 1 2024 | Sims allowed one walk over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over Seattle. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims replaced starter Brayan Bello with one out in the seventh inning and runners at the corners. He sandwiched a walk around a short flyout and a groundout to get out of the inning. It was Sims' debut for the Red Sox, who acquired him ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Boston's bullpen has been the primary culprit of the team's 3-8 start coming out of the All-Star break, and Sims is expected to help. He'll be used in high-leverage spots ahead of closer Kenley Jansen, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. The high-leverage crew will be bolstered by the eventual returns of Chris Martin (elbow) and Justin Slaten (elbow). |
Jul 30 2024 | The Red Sox acquired Sims from the Reds on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Ovis Portes, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has posted a 3.57 ERA and 40:20 K:BB over 35.1 innings in 2024 as a member of the Reds bullpen. The pending free agent boasts a career 27.5 percent strikeout rate but also an 11.9 percent walk rate. He'll slot in as a setup man for Boston in front of closer Kenley Jansen. |
Jun 9 2024 | Sims allowed one hit and one walk over one-third of an inning in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Cubs. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Alexis Diaz presumably unavailable after throwing 42 pitches across back-to-back days, Sims was brought in for a save opportunity. He was unable to close out the win and was replaced by Justin Wilson, who nailed down his first save. Sims has a 4.43 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 26 outings (20.1 innings) in 2024. |
May 27 2024 | Sims struck out two batters in a perfect inning and earned a save over the Cardinals on Monday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims had no trouble working through the heart of St. Louis' order to finish off the 3-1 win Monday. It was his first save of the year to go along with his seven holds and 19:10 K:BB through 17.1 innings. Alexis Diaz earned saves Saturday and Sunday, leading to his day off Monday. Sims is not expected to see many save chances in the near future. |
Mar 31 2024 | Sims (1-0) threw a scoreless inning and picked up the win in Sunday's victory over Washington. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims fired a perfect top of the ninth inning and benefitted from the team's three runs in the bottom half of the frame to pull out a comeback win. He's coming off a career-high 67 appearances (61 innings) in 2023, when he operated as one of the primary setup relievers for closer Alexis Diaz. |
Feb 20 2024 | Like teammate Hunter Greene, as well as a good portion of other pitchers in baseball, Sims is working on a splitter this spring, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims wants to have a better third pitch to use against lefties, as he hasn't been happy with the results when using a changeup. The Reds should have a deeper bullpen this season, which might limit the chances for Sims to record saves or holds, but might also allow him to be stronger on a per outing basis. |
Jan 11 2024 | The Reds and Sims avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.85 million contract Thursday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the reliever's third and final year of arbitration eligibility. Sims managed to stay healthy and pitch well for Cincinnati this past season, collecting a 3.10 ERA and three saves to go along with a 72:39 K:BB over 61 innings. He'll be relied upon for high-leverage outings again in 2024. |
Aug 26 2023 | Sims struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Saturday's 8-7 extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims took care of business in the 11th inning after Alexis Diaz and the Reds' shaky defense combined to blown a save chance in the 10th. This was Sims' third save of the season to go with 21 holds and four blown saves in 53 appearances. He's posted three consecutive scoreless appearances, and he's now at a 3.70 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 63:32 K:BB through 48.2 innings this season. The right-hander remains a solid setup man, but it would take a brutal slump from Diaz for Sims to be considered for closing duties. |
Jul 17 2023 | Sims (3-2) was tagged with Sunday's loss to the Brewers. He allowed two runs on one hit and one walk over two-thirds of an inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds held a 3-2 lead entering the eighth inning and were hoping to prevent a sweep at the hand of their division rivals. Sims, who closed out the seventh inning, allowed a walk and a single to lead off the eighth before Owen Miller's sacrifice fly tied the game. Another run was charged to Sims after he left the game. Sims, who has been near-impeccable as the Reds' primary setup reliever, entered the game with a 1.93 ERA over the previous 18.2 innings and was the bullpen with 13 holds. |
Jul 9 2023 | Sims (3-1) picked up the win over Milwaukee on Saturday. He allowed one walk and struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a wild affair in Milwaukee, as the Reds came back twice to earn the victory. Sims is a trusted late-inning arm out of the bullpen for manager David Bell. Since June 1, the right-hander has a 2.04 ERA with 23 strikeouts and five walks over 17.2 innings. Most of the damage during that stretch came in one disastrous game when he ceded three home runs in one inning to Atlanta. |
Jul 4 2023 | Sims picked up the save in Tuesday's 8-4 victory over the Nationals, striking out two in a scoreless inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Daniel Duarte allowed the first two Nationals to reach in the ninth inning, Sims came in to shut the door, striking out a pair to leave the tying run in the on-deck circle. It's the first save in three chances this year for Sims -- Alexis Diaz was unavailable after pitching in the Reds' previous two contests. While he won't be overtaking Diaz for the closing job, the 29-year-old Sims appears to be the next man up in Cincinnati's pen. He's pitched to a 3.31 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP and 42:18 K:BB across 32.2 innings this season. |
Mar 30 2023 | Sims (back) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bell was bothered by back spasms throughout much of March and will need a little more rest and rehab before he can jump into the Reds' bullpen. The 28-year-old might eventually emerge again as a high-leverage option in Cincinnati, though he has some proving to do after his lost 2022. |
Mar 18 2023 | Sims has been shut down for a few days with a back spasm, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had season-ending back surgery last year, yet the team says it's not related to that procedure to address a herniated disk. Either way, it sounds like Sims is could still make the Opening Day roster. |
Jan 13 2023 | Sims (back) signed a one-year, $1.2675 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims' season was cut short in 2022 after undergoing season-ending surgery on his back, and the 6.2 innings he managed to pitch early in the year weren't pretty (9.45 ERA, 1.65 WHIP). It's possible Sims works his way back to the closer role Cincinnati had planned for him going into 2022, though it may take a while before he gets there. |
Jul 1 2022 | Sims will undergo season-ending surgery to address a herniated disc in his back, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims entered the season looking like the favorite to close games in Cincinnati, but he'll finish it with just a single save to his name. He missed the start of the season with elbow troubles and returned to make just six appearances, giving up seven runs in 6.2 frames, before returning to the injured list with back problems. He attempted to pitch through the issue, but it got bad enough that he was in serious pain and couldn't feel his foot. Undergoing the surgery at this point in the year at least gives him plenty of time to get ready for spring training. |
Jun 17 2022 | Sims (back) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims began a throwing program in late May but won't be eligible to rejoin the Reds until at least mid-July after being moved to the 60-day injured list. It's not clear how much progress the right-hander has made in his throwing progression, but Art Warren and Alexis Diaz are the top two closing options in the Reds' bullpen after Tony Santillan (back) was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday. |
May 24 2022 | Reds manager David Bell said Sims (back) will begin a throwing program Tuesday or Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he's a reliever, Sims shouldn't require too extensive of a ramp-up period, but he'll still need to advance from playing catch to throwing off a mound to facing hitters before he's cleared to head out on what should be a brief minor-league rehab assignment. Before lower-back spasms forced him to the 15-day injured list May 12, Sims looked to be near the front of the pecking order for saves out of the Cincinnati bullpen, but it's unclear where he'll stand in the Reds' late-inning plans once he eventually returns. Alexis Diaz, Art Warren and Tony Santillan have all picked up one save apiece since Sims was placed on the IL. |
May 18 2022 | Sims (back) has yet to resume a throwing program and won't return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible May 26, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was placed on the injured list last week due to a bulging disc in his back and has remained shut down from throwing since landing on the shelf. The 28-year-old is now likely to be out until at least early June, and a specific return timeline is unlikely to come into focus until he's cleared to start a throwing program. |
May 12 2022 | Sims is dealing with a bulging disc in his back, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was diagnosed with low back spasms when he was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, and manager David Bell clarified the nature of the 28-year-old's injury following the move. The right-hander started some light exercises and core strengthening Thursday. Bell said he doesn't have a prediction regarding how long Sims will be sidelined but said that he hasn't heard anyone talk about the injury as a long-term issue. Art Warren, Tony Santillan and Hunter Strickland are the top candidates for ninth-inning work in Sims' absence. |
May 5 2022 | Sims gave up five runs in two-thirds of inning during Wednesday's 18-4 loss to the Brewers. He gave up one hit while walking four batters. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was in a "get-work" outing, having last pitched Saturday and then five days prior to that. If the Reds beat the odds and actually have a save chance Thursday, there's a reasonable likelihood that Sims won't be available after throwing 34 pitches Wednesday. |
Apr 24 2022 | Sims tossed a scoreless inning and notched a save against St. Louis on Sunday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was activated from the injured list Friday and was tagged with two runs in his season debut Saturday. The Reds went right back to him Sunday and he fired a perfect inning, forcing three straight groundouts to close out the 4-1 win. The 6-foot-2 righty recorded seven saves in 47 innings last season. |
Apr 22 2022 | Sims (elbow) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims' activation was expected Friday, and he'll be available to make his season debut after missing the start of the year with an elbow issue. The righty made four rehab appearances at Triple-A Louisville and allowed a run on two hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings. He should be part of Cincinnati's committee of late-inning relievers that also includes Tony Santillan, Art Warren and Hunter Strickland. |
Apr 20 2022 | Sims (elbow) is slated to rejoin the Reds' bullpen Friday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been on the injured list since the start of the regular season after dealing with back and elbow injuries during camp, but he made his final rehab appearance Wednesday and struck out one in a scoreless inning at Triple-A Louisville. The right-hander made a career-high 47 relief appearances for the Reds last year and converted seven of 10 save chances with a 4.40 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 47 innings. Once he's officially activated, Sims will join a crowded late-inning mix in the Reds' bullpen that also includes Tony Santillan, Art Warren and Hunter Strickland. |
Apr 13 2022 | Manager David Bell said Wednesday that he received encouraging reports from Sims' (elbow) rehab appearance that he threw Tuesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was delayed in camp due to elbow and back injuries, but it's encouraging that he was able to begin a rehab assignment early in the regular season. He gave up a run via a solo homer in his one inning Tuesday, but he apparently felt good afterward. Bell is optimistic that Sims could return by the time the Reds return home to face the Cardinals on April 22. |
Apr 12 2022 | Sims (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been behind schedule since the start of camp after dealing with elbow and back issues over the winter, though the Reds never seemed to be concerned about any long-term absence. He looked like the favorite to close heading into spring training but was never officially named the closer, so his role upon his return is not yet clear. Tony Santillan and Art Warren have picked up the Reds' two saves so far this season. |
Apr 9 2022 | Sims (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville this week, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims performed well in his live BP session Friday, and the right-hander will take another step in his recovery process this week. If all goes well in Louisville, manager David Bell is optimistic that Sims could rejoin the Reds as early as next weekend for the team's home series against the Cardinals. |
Apr 7 2022 | Sims (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims tossed a bullpen session Saturday but isn't expected to be ready for game action until mid-to-late April. He's expected to be the favorite for closing duties once he's back to full health, but Art Warren, Luis Cessa and Hunter Strickland will vie for save chances while Sims is unavailable. |
Apr 2 2022 | Sims (elbow) is expected to begin the regular season on the injured list, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims threw a bullpen session Saturday, but he'll still likely begin the season on the injured list. He's expected to return by mid-to-late April, putting him on a similar trajectory to starter Luis Castillo (shoulder). In his absence, Hunter Strickland, Art Warren and Luis Cessa are all expected to receive save opportunities. |
Mar 31 2022 | Sims (elbow) completed a side session Wednesday and plans to throw against hitters before the end of camp, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds have already confirmed the right-hander will begin the season on the injured list after dealing with elbow and back injuries over the winter, though the hope is he'll only spent the 15-day minimum on the shelf. Sims was expected to open the campaign as the favorite for save opportunities, but Art Warren, Luis Cessa and Hunter Strickland are all in the mix to close in the meantime for Cincinnati. |
Mar 29 2022 | Sims (elbow) will begin the season on the injured list, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims entered camp behind schedule after dealing with elbow and back issues over the winter. There haven't been reports of any setbacks, but he's yet to pitch in a game this spring and won't have time to get up to speed by Opening Day, as manager David Bell confirmed Monday. Art Warren, who posted a 1.29 ERA and a 41.5 percent strikeout rate in 21 innings last season, could open the season as the Reds' closer as a result. |
Mar 20 2022 | Manager David Bell said Sunday that Sims likely won't be ready for Opening Day after entering spring training behind schedule due to elbow and back issues, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims isn't currently injured, but having to deal with the elbow and back injuries while prepping for spring training is likely to delay his availability for the start of the season. The 27-year-old could open the campaign on the injured list, though any absence isn't expected to be a lengthy one. Sims is the favorite to operate as Cincinnati's closer to open the season, but that job could fall to Art Warren if Sims is indeed unavailable. |
Mar 12 2022 | Sims said Saturday that he's "all clear" regarding any potential arm troubles, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reds general manager Nick Krall said earlier in the day that Sims was behind schedule to start camp, though he didn't give a reason for the delay. An arm injury seemed like the most logical explanation, given that Sims dealt with elbow issues last year, but that's apparently not what's ailing the righty. Sims' draft stock should perhaps dip slightly until the conflicting reports are cleared up, but it still looks as though he has a real chance to open the year as the Reds' closer. |
Aug 15 2021 | Sims (5-2) struck out two in 1.1 perfect innings to earn the win Sunday against the Phillies. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was charged with a loss and blown save in his last appearance when he allowed three runs (two earned) in two-thirds of an inning against Atlanta on Wednesday. However, he worked as a middle reliever Sunday and earned his fifth win of the season after he relieved starter Sonny Gray in the bottom of the fifth inning. The 27-year-old has made three appearances since he returned from the injured list, and he's held the opposition scoreless in two of those outings. |
Aug 12 2021 | Sims (4-2) was charged with a loss and a blown save Wednesday against the Braves. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In the top of the 11th inning, Cincinnati put up a run to take the lead. The team then turned the ball over to Sims in hope that the 27-year-old could close things out, but he instead served up a walkoff three-run homer to Ozzie Albies. The unsuccessful outing will likely hurt Sims' chances of leaping to the front of a closer committee that also includes Heath Hembree and Amir Garrett, and his 5.34 ERA and 1.38 WHIP on the season don't scream the numbers of a typical closer. |
Aug 8 2021 | Reds manager David Bell said Sims (elbow) will be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's game against the Pirates, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cincinnati will announce a corresponding transaction shortly before Sunday's 1:10 p.m. ET first pitch. After being sidelined since late June with a right elbow sprain, Sims checked out fine during a five-outing rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville, giving up two earned runs on six hits and three walks across 4.2 innings. Prior to getting shut down with the injury, Sims had factored into the Reds' closing mix, but it's unclear if he'll immediately be thrust back into high-leverage spots out of the bullpen as he returns from the IL. |
Aug 6 2021 | Manager David Bell said Friday that Sims (elbow) could be activated from the 10-day injured list as soon as Sunday against the Pirates, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been on the shelf since late June with an elbow sprain. The right-hander began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on July 27, and he most recently pitched on consecutive days Wednesday and Thursday. So long as he comes out of his latest outing feeling good, he figures to be reinstated as soon as the series finale against Pittsburgh. |
Aug 5 2021 | Sims (elbow) is scheduled to pitch the second of back-to-back days on his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Thursday, and if all goes well he could be officially back with the big league club over the weekend, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "If it goes well tonight and he recovers well the next couple of days, it'll probably be a tough decision of whether to have him pitch one more time in Triple-A or be active later this weekend," manager David Bell said. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds are starting to get reinforcements back from the injured list. Michael Lorenzen just return from his hamstring injury last weekend and converted a save Wednesday, and Sims could be a part of that closing picture again when he returns. |
Aug 3 2021 | Sims (elbow) was playing catch at Great American Ballpark before Tuesday's game against the Twins after making a couple of appearances on a rehab assignment, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Sims has made three appearances at Triple-A Louisville, throwing three scoreless innings, striking out three, while allowing three hits and three walks. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reds manager David Bell was vague about a potential return date for Sims, along with teammates Nick Senzel and Mike Moustakas. "They're all progressing well, which is the most important thing," Bell said. "But no timetable. I think it's important to keep it that way and we'll come in one of these days and they'll either be here or on their way. But still kind of on track to get at least a couple of those guys back within the next week, for sure." If you want to read the tea leaves, Moustakas and Senzel remained with Louisville as they began a road trip, whereas Sims stayed close by, perhaps suggesting an earlier return. |
Jul 25 2021 | Sims (elbow) will make his first rehab appearance for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims is ready to begin the final phase of his recovery process from the right elbow sprain that has kept him on the shelf for the past month. He'll likely need to make at least two appearances at Louisville before rejoining the Reds, but once activated, Sims should factor into the late-inning mix for the big club. Before the injury cropped up, Sims registered seven saves in nine chances on the season, but he'll likely be behind Heath Hembree in the bullpen pecking order upon returning. |
Jul 20 2021 | Sims (elbow) will join Triple-A Louisville for a rehab assignment next week, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An elbow sprain sent Sims to the injured list June 24, before which he posted a 5.02 ERA and 44:15 K:BB in 28.2 innings of relief. The righty had settled into a closing role prior to the injury, though he may yield such responsibilities to Tejay Antone (forearm) once the latter ultimately returns from the injured list. It's unclear how much rehab work Sims will require, but an activation around the start of August still appears realistic. |
Jul 16 2021 | Sims (elbow) isn't expected to return before August, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been out with a sprained elbow since late June. The injury was originally expected to cost him three or four weeks, but it now looks likely to keep him out for closer to six. He reportedly hasn't suffered a setback, however, so it's possible the initial timeline was simply overly optimistic. |
Jul 4 2021 | Sims (elbow) is expected to return from the injured list in late July, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks after landing on the injured list with an elbow sprain June 24, and it appears he'll be out through the end of that initial timeline and perhaps a bit longer. It's unclear if Sims has resumed throwing since landing on the shelf. |
Jun 24 2021 | Sims' elbow sprain is expected to keep him out for 3-to-4 weeks, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The news certainly could have been a lot worse for the Reds, as this is Sims' second elbow issue of the year. He battled an elbow problem over the offseason and didn't appear in a Cactus League game until nearly the end of spring training. The given timeline means he'll return just after the All-Star break at the earliest and potentially not until late July. Sims had been the leading member of the Reds' closer committee, so other members of that committee such as Tejay Antone and Amir Garrett should see more opportunities in the ninth inning until he returns. |
Jun 16 2021 | Sims allowed a hit and struck out four over 1.1 innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Milwaukee. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitching for the third time in four days, Sims was able to lock down his seventh save of the year with little trouble. The 27-year-old has a 4.23 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB across 27.2 innings this season. He remains the favorite for save chances, but Amir Garrett could get a ninth-inning assignment soon given Sims' heavy workload recently. |
Jun 6 2021 | Sims notched his sixth save of the season Sunday against the Cardinals after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing two hits and fanning two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been quite busy of late but has been very effective, notching five saves over his last six outings and not allowing a single earned run during that stretch. The right-hander, who owns a 4.70 ERA on the season, has gone 6-for-7 in save chances this year. |
Jun 3 2021 | Sims pitched two scoreless innings on two hits and a walk to earn the save in the win over the Cardinals on Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims entered the eighth inning with a two-run lead. Despite allowing the tying runner to reach base in the ninth inning, he was able to shut the door on St. Louis to secure the win and the save. This was the 27-year-old's first multi-inning save of the season. Cincinnati's closer situation is complicated, as there has only been 11 saves to go around so far this season between five Reds relievers. Sims leads the team with just four saves on five save chances. |
May 27 2021 | Sims struck out one batter in a scoreless inning against the Nationals on Thursday en route to his third save of the season. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Sonny Gray went six scoreless, Sims took the ball and completed the shutout on 11 pitches (this was a seven-inning contest played following the conclusion of Wednesday's suspended game). Sims has endured some bumps in the road this season and sits with a 6.00 ERA, but with saves in back-to-back appearances, he appears to be the 1a option at closer for the Reds. Tejay Antone recently described his role as "mid-game closer," per the Cincinnati Enquirer. |
May 25 2021 | Sims picked up his second save of the season Tuesday against the Nationals after tossing one-third of a scoreless inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was tasked with recording the final out of the game, and he accomplished that feat by forcing Starlin Castro to ground out. The right-hander reliever has now gone 2-for-3 in save chances this season, but this outing allowed him to get back on track following a woeful effort in his previous appearance. He has given up seven runs (six earned) while posting an 11:4 K:BB across 7.2 innings of work this month. |
May 16 2021 | Sims gave up two runs (one earned) in the 11th inning of Saturday's win against the Rockies, but got the win when the Reds scored two more runs in the 12th inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This wasn't a save chance for Sims, as it was his second inning in the game, but essentially functioned as a blown save with Sims trying to protect a lead. Sims gave up three walks in his two innings, and one of those came around to score along with the ghost runner on a double by Josh Fuentes. Sims at least stabilized after that to keep the game tied, allowing the Reds to rally one more time. |
May 12 2021 | Sims (2-1) pitched two perfect innings and struck out four, earning the win in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Pirates. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty reliever posted his best outing to date in what's been a difficult season thus far. His ERA, now 5.54, has been inflated by three bad, multi-run outings. That being said, Sims is part of what's overall been an underwhelming bullpen and continues to pitch in close games, which leads to opportunities for winning decisions like he earned Wednesday. |
Apr 30 2021 | Sims was called upon to finish the ninth Friday against the Cubs but couldn't record the final out, eventually giving way to Tejay Antone for the save. He walked three while retiring two batters. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Sims was wild in the outing (only 13 strikes on 27 pitches), he twice had what appeared to be potential game-ending third strikes instead called balls by home plate umpire Marty Foster. Given the number of pitches Sims threw, it's possible that he won't get the next save chance if one arises on Saturday. |
Apr 22 2021 | Sims (0-1) took the loss to the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits and a walk. He struck out two batters in one inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims put out a small fire in the ninth inning, retiring Eduardo Escobar and Asdrubal Cabrera to keep the game tied. Things did not go so well when Sims returned for the 10th. Amir Garrett (16.20 ERA) does not appear long for the closer job given his struggles and Sims now has a 6.43 ERA after this outing, so the saves picture is clouded in Cincinnati. Tejay Antone and Sean Doolittle are two other candidates. |
Apr 13 2021 | Sims earned his first save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Giants on Monday, striking out the only batter he faced. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims entered with a man on second and two outs in the ninth. The 26-year-old did his job, as he struck out Evan Longoria to end the game. The Reds haven't really established a clear-cut closer just yet, as Sims and Amir Garrett have had two save chances apiece through the first 10 games of the year. Sims is now 1-for-2 on save opportunities; he surrendered a game-tying two-run homer against the Diamondbacks on April 9. He's been perfect otherwise and currently owns a 4.91 ERA and 6:1 K:BB across 3.2 innings. |
Apr 5 2021 | Sims pitched a perfect eighth to earn a hold in his first outing of the season, striking out one. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Meanwhile Amir Garrett got the Reds' first save chance and was a little shaky while converting it, allowing a homer and two other baserunners before getting the final out. If Garrett, who threw 25 pitches, needs a day off, it's possible Sims could get the next chance on Tuesday. |
Mar 27 2021 | Sims and Amir Garrett will share closer duties to start the season, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims is a righty while Garrett is a lefty, which could mean Sims sees slightly more than half the save chances early on. The Reds haven't said they'll refrain from using a traditional closer all year, however, so whoever pitches better in their first few opportunities could well wind up as a true closer for most of the year. |
Mar 23 2021 | Sims allowed two runs on three hits in his spring training debut, all after retiring the first two batters, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "The breaking ball was really good today," Sims said. "I know I gave up a hit or two on it, but those are easier adjustments. Those are kind of more location, maybe pitch selection." | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This wasn't all bad for his first outing. Sims was throwing at 92-94 mph with his fastball, which is at the low end of his range from last season, but within his range. Amir Garrett meanwhile looked dominant in his one inning, striking out the side, and thus might be a little ahead of Sims in the closer's job battle. One thing to keep in mind is that manager David Bell may not use a full-time closer, but instead mix-and-match with Garrett and Sims. |
Mar 21 2021 | Sims (elbow) is scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Padres, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. "I felt really sharp," Sims said. "I was making the right adjustments that I wanted to. I was getting the right action. I'm ready to roll." | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims pitched in an intrasquad game Saturday. Amir Garrett, his competition for the closer's job, pitched in a "B" game Saturday. The job battle could extend into the start of the regular season as both pitchers get up to speed. |
Mar 20 2021 | Sims (elbow) will pitch in an intrasquad game Saturday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims remains confident that he'll be ready to pitch by Opening Day, and he'll take another step in his recovery process Saturday. If he feels good after pitching in the intrasquad matchup, he could make his Cactus League debut at some point next week. If Sims is healthy for Opening Day, he should serve as a high-leverage reliever for the Reds. |
Mar 18 2021 | Sims (elbow) is confident that he'll be ready to pitch by Opening Day, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims threw a live batting practice session Wednesday and felt good Thursday. Assuming he continues to feel good, the next step in his recovery could be to make his Cactus League debut. The right-hander is optimistic that he'll be healthy enough to pitch to begin the regular season, and he should serve as a high-leverage reliever for Cincinnati. |
Mar 17 2021 | Sims (elbow) will throw a live batting practice session Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has been brought along slowly early in spring training due to right elbow tightness, but he'll face hitters for the first time Wednesday. If all goes well, he could be on track to make his Cactus League debut in the near future. It's not yet clear whether Sims will be ready to pitch in time for Opening Day, but he should serve as a high-leverage reliever for Cincinnati once he's fully healthy. |
Mar 4 2021 | Sims (elbow) threw 10 fastballs off a mound Wednesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rosecrans notes that Sims took part in a modified flat-ground bullpen session called a "short box" drill, which features a catch on the plate or slightly in front of it. The activity could be the final step before Sims resumes pitching traditional bullpen sessions. Once he completes a few bullpen sessions, Sims will then advance to facing hitters in live batting practice or simulated games before he receives clearance to make his spring debut. The 26-year-old still looks to have a good chance at being ready to go for Opening Day. |
Feb 27 2021 | Sims (elbow) threw for the first time in camp Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims has had a delayed start to spring training due to some right elbow tightness. Although he was shut down for several days early in camp, he said that he'll be ready for the regular season. His brief absence could hinder his chances to begin the season as the team's closer, but he should still have time to prepare for Opening Day as long as he doesn't face any setbacks. |
Feb 17 2021 | Sims said Wednesday that a recent MRI on his right elbow revealed nothing concerning, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims will be behind his fellow relief pitchers to begin spring training while recovering from right elbow tightness, but both he and the Reds are confident that he'll be ready to go for Opening Day. The delayed start to camp could still hurt Sims' chances of contending for the closer role, which appears to be wide open following the offseason trade that sent incumbent Raisel Iglesias to the Angels. Along with Sims, Amir Garrett and Sean Doolittle look to be the primary candidates for the ninth-inning gig. |
Feb 8 2021 | Sims (elbow) said on his personal Twitter page on Monday that he had no concerns regarding his readiness for Opening Day. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reds general manager Nick Krall said Monday that Sims would be delayed to start camp due to elbow tightness. The righty didn't deny those reports but said that the delay was purely precautionary. Players are typically rather optimistic about their own health, but with nearly two months remaining until Opening Day, it's certainly believable that he won't be forced to miss any time. |
Dec 16 2020 | Sims is among the internal candidates for the closer's job after Raisel Iglesias was traded to the Angels, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell also mentioned Amir Garrett and Tejay Antone among the possible candidates. Sims built off of a 2019 breakout in the Reds bullpen, posting a 2.45 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB over 25.2 IP in 2020 while tallying five holds. Garrett has verbally staked his claim on the role, but we haven't yet seen what else the Reds will do this offseason, let alone how Bell intends to handle the position. |
Aug 28 2020 | Sims (2-0) earned the win in relief in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Brewers. He tossed two scoreless innings, walking two and fanning two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims extended his streak of scoreless appearances to four and, in fact, he has allowed earned runs just once all season. The right-hander owns an excellent 0.69 ERA in 11 appearances (13 innings) out of the bullpen this season. |
Aug 13 2020 | Sims threw a shutout inning against the Pirates in Thursday's loss, striking out two. He also picked up a win earlier in the week, prompting manager David Bell to suggest that Sims could end up in higher-leverage situations soon, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This outing wasn't particularly high-leverage, as the Reds were trailing 9-5 in the ninth. With this inning, Sims now has a 0.96 ERA and 13:4 K:BB over 9.1 innings so far, with the one run he's allowed coming on a homer. |
Aug 1 2020 | Though the Reds' bullpen has really struggled, Sims has started well, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out five. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims hasn't been put into too many high-leverage situations yet, though he did quell a rally by the Cubs on Wednesday after Brooks Raley faced five batters without retiring a batter. With Robert Stephenson injured, Sims has moved one step up the ladder in the Reds bullpen. |
Jul 12 2020 | The Reds are preparing to use Sims as a piggyback pitcher behind their starters early in the season, similar to their plans for Tyler Mahle, Mark Sheldon on MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The good news for both Mahle and Sims is that they can go all out in these relief stints without having to worry about going through an opposing order more than two times, which should improve their rate stats. |
Mar 19 2020 | Sims had a 7.94 ERA over 5.2 innings this spring, giving five earned runs on six hits and two walks. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims is battling for one of the last two to three bullpen spots, along with Cody Reed, Joel Kuhnel, Mat Bowman and Justin Shafer. It could be one less spot open if Tyler Mahle stays with the big club as a reliever. |
Sep 27 2019 | Sims will start Saturday's game against the Pirates. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims figures to toss the first inning or two before handing the ball to a bulk reliever, especially considering he hasn't worked more than two frames since July 24 against Milwaukee. He owns a 4.39 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 56 punchouts over 41 innings this season. |
Sep 7 2019 | Sims covered 1.1 innings in relief Friday in the Reds' 7-5 loss to the Diamondbacks, giving up one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just three days earlier, Sims made a spot start against the Braves after Alex Wood (back) was scratched. Sims tossed only 34 pitches in that outing, so the Reds were comfortable keeping him available out of the bullpen Friday. Wood is without a clear timeline to resume pitching, but with Tyler Mahle having already served as a sixth starter lately, the Reds are expected to simply get by with a traditional five-man rotation rather than calling on Sims for additional starts. |
Sep 3 2019 | Sims allowed one run on three hits and zero walks over 2.2 innings during Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Reds. He struck out two and didn't factor in the decision. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sims was pushed into starting duty after Alex Wood was scratched with a back issue, and he performed pretty well by delivering 26 of his 34 pitches for strikes. The 25-year-old has a 4.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB through 33.1 innings and figures to return to his bullpen role. |
Sep 2 2019 | Sims will start Tuesday against the Phillies, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic | reports. |
Aug 5 2019 | Sims has made four appearances out of the bullpen since his July 24 spot start in | Milwaukee, working 6.1 innings and giving up three runs on five hits and two walks |

Jun 23 2018 | Sims was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. | Sims will fill a low-leverage role in the Braves' bullpen. In 67 innings for the Atlanta over the past two years, the righty has a 5.78 ERA. Preston Tucker was sent down to Triple-A in a corresponding move. |
May 20 2018 | Sims was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. | Sims will be up to provide some additional depth in the bullpen with the Braves in the midst of a long stretch without an off day (16 straight days). He may accompany the club to Philadelphia this week but Sims will likely head back down when a need arises elsewhere on the roster. |
May 5 2018 | Sims was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. | Sims made one appearance in a brief stint with the Braves earlier this season and it was a disaster. He lasted just a third of an inning and gave up three runs on two hits and three walks. He's been solid in 12.1 innings for Gwinnett, though, striking out 16 batters while posting a 1.46 ERA. Max Fried was sent down to Triple-A to make room for him in the bullpen. |
Apr 18 2018 | Sims could make a spot start Thursday in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez (hamstring), Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. | Sims was recalled over the weekend to act as a long reliever, but he has primarily been a starter in his career. He has yet to make an appearance in the majors this year, but he held the opposition scoreless in his lone start for Triple-A Gwinnett. If he does pick up Thursday's start, he would face off with Mets' righty Matt Harvey. |
Apr 15 2018 | Sims was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday. | Sims will join the big-league bullpen after the team designated Luke Jackson for assignment Sunday. Sims -- who posted a 5.62 ERA over 57.2 innings with the Braves last season -- will likely be used in a long-relief role for the time being. |
Mar 18 2018 | Sims gave up four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three over three innings in Saturday's split-squad game against the Phillies. | The 23-year-old is still theoretically in the running for a rotation spot, but Sims has done little this spring to indicate he's ready for that assignment. Expect him to begin the season back at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he posted a 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 132:36 K:BB in 115.1 innings in 2017, and another strong performance there could earn him a callup to Atlanta later in the year. |
Feb 21 2018 | Sims is in the running for the Braves' final rotation spot, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. | It seems like Julio Teheran, Mike Foltynewicz and Brandon McCarthy are locks to make the rotation, with Luis Gohara the favorite to swipe the fourth spot. This leaves just one spot remaining for either Sims, Sean Newcomb, Max Fried or Scott Kazmir (hip). Sims seems to be a bit of a long-shot for the role, mostly given the successes of Newcomb and Fried last season. That said, Sims' struggles in the majors certainly don't help his case. In 57.2 frames, he could only muster a 5.62 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP while striking out just 6.9 batters per nine. Sims would need to put together an outstanding spring to truly have a shot at overtaking the competition for the fifth rotation spot. |
Oct 1 2017 | Sims (3-6) was handed the loss Saturday against the Marlins after lasting just two innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks. He struck out one. | Sims simply didn't have it in this one, as it took him 60 pitches to get through his abbreviated outing. Most of the damage was done in the first inning, with the big blow being a three-run home run by Derek Dietrich. This start aside, Sims' first stint in the big leagues was promising enough despite the unsightly 5.62 ERA with which he finished. He's just 23 years old, and if he can piece together a few strong starts in spring training, he should be in the running for one of the back-end rotation spots for 2018. |
Sep 25 2017 | Sims (3-5) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts through 6.2 innings to earn the win Monday against the Mets. | This marks Sims's longest start of the season and his first quality start since August 22 against Seattle. Sims has allowed just three runs over 11.2 innings with 12 strikeouts over his past two starts and is making a strong case for a chance at a rotation job next season. |
Sep 21 2017 | Sims allowed only one run on three hits and two walks over five innings Wednesday while striking out six, but he didn't factor into the decision in a 7-3 loss to the Nationals. | He exited the game in line for his third big-league win before the Braves bullpen imploded in the top of the eighth inning. Sims' 5.14 ERA on the year with Atlanta isn't encouraging, but this performance will give him a bit of confidence heading into Monday's road doubleheader against the Mets. |
Sep 18 2017 | Sims is listed as the Braves' probable starter for Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. | After being tagged for seven runs in three innings in his Sept. 2 start against the Cubs, Sims was moved to the bullpen, where he's made four appearances in the last two weeks. With Mike Foltynewicz (finger) on track to miss his scheduled start this week, Sims will get another trial in the rotation, but the rookie won't make for an especially appealing streaming option while taking on one of the majors' top teams. Over 44 innings in the big leagues, Sims maintains an underwhelming 5.52 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 6.3 K/9 rate. |
Sep 5 2017 | Sims will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the season, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. | The smart money was always on Sims ending up in the bullpen, where he could utilize his two plus pitches (fastball and curveball) without worrying about turning over a big-league lineup multiple times. Luiz Gohara is taking his spot in the six-man rotation. Sims will likely work in mid-leverage spots over the rest of the season, but could eventually pitch his way into a late-inning role. He had a 5.73 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 26 strikeouts in 37.2 innings as a starter. |
Sep 2 2017 | Sims (2-5) allowed seven runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four batters through just three innings during Saturday's loss to the Cubs. | This was Sims worst outing in the majors, and he now sports a 5.73 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 6.2 K/9 through seven starts. Those numbers aren't moving the fantasy needle in many settings, and it's probably wise to fade the rookie outside of favorable matchups. Sims projects to make his next start against Miami at SunTrust Park. |
Aug 28 2017 | Sims (2-4) allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk across 6.1 innings while taking the loss Monday against the Phillies. He struck out seven. | Sims notched a career high in strikeouts in this one, but a two-run sixth inning and a solo home run in the seventh put him on the hook for the loss. He pounded the strike zone at a 72 percent clip, but his control wavered as he got deep into the game and he paid the price. Although he lost for the first time in three starts, Sims displayed effective stuff and will look to follow up with an improved result Saturday against the Cubs. |
Aug 22 2017 | Sims (2-3) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win in Tuesday's 4-0 shutout of the Mariners, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out four. | The rookie shaved over a full run off his ERA with the impressive outing. Sims now has a 4.13 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through his first five big-league starts, but his 15:8 K:BB in 28.1 innings suggests he's been more lucky than good. He'll next take the mound Monday in Philadelphia. |
Aug 17 2017 | Sims (1-3) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two batters through five innings during Thursday's win over the Rockies. | After posting a respectable 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 through 115 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett, Sims had struggled to acclimatize to the highest level through his first three starts in the majors. Hitter-Friendly Coors Field didn't seem to faze the rookie Thursday, though, and the outing checks out an eye-opener for gamers. Still, the 23-year-old righty boasts an underwhelming 5.24 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 4.4 K/9 through four starts in the majors and will probably continue to offer limit upside. He projects to face the Mariners at SunTrust Park in his next start. |
Aug 6 2017 | Sims (0-2) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters through six innings during Sunday's loss to Miami. | Sims is proving to be ready for the highest level with back-to-bac respectable starts. His fantasy upside is likely capped, and there are probably going to be ups and downs during his first trip through the majors. However, the 2012 first-round selection has pedigree and strikeout upside on his side. Sims sports a career 10.3 K/9 at the Triple-A level, after all. The 23-year-old righty lines up to face the Cardinals at Busch Stadium in his next start. |
Aug 2 2017 | Sims (0-1) gave up three runs on six hits over six innings while striking out three and walking none in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. | The 2012 first-round pick didn't appear nervous at all in his MLB debut and kept the Braves in the game, throwing 62 of 92 pitches for strikes and displaying the improved control that earned him a promotion to the majors. Including his time with Triple-A Gwinnett, Sims has now given his team a quality start in five of his last seven trips to the mound, but he'll look for a better final result in his next outing Sunday at home against the Marlins. |
Aug 1 2017 | Sims was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday. | As planned, Sims will head up to the majors to make his MLB debut against the Dodgers. He'll face off with Los Angeles starter Kenta Maeda in the series opener. |
Jul 31 2017 | Sims will be called up to start Tuesday against the Dodgers, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. | Aaron Blair flopped in his brief audition following Jaime Garcia's departure, and now it's Sims' turn to get a look. A first-round pick in 2012 (21st overall), he endured some growing pains during his rise up the ladder but has posted a 3.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 132:36 K:BB in 115.1 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett this season. Home runs have been a problem (19 allowed this year) and he will face a tough test in his major-league debut, but Sims is worth a speculative add right away in most NL-only and deep mixed leagues. |
Jul 25 2017 | Sims could be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to receive a look in the Braves' rotation at some point during the second half, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. | The Braves currently have a vacancy in their rotation following the trade of Jaime Garcia to the Twins on Monday, but it appears Aaron Blair will be first in line for a promotion to the big leagues to fill the void. However, with Blair owning a 5.91 ERA over 70 career innings in the majors, he may not be long for the Braves' rotation. If Blair falters in his expected start Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, the organization could bring in Sims for his big-league debut. Once one of the Braves' top pitching prospects, Sims has seen his stock tumble the last two years, but has at least noticed a turnaround in his production at Triple-A this season, providing a 3.75 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 124:33 K:BB in 110.1 innings. |
Jun 23 2017 | Sims, 23, has a 3.94 ERA and 81:29 K:BB in 80 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett. | Once a highly touted phenom, Sims is now an afterthought in the stocked Braves farm system. Still, opposing batters are hitting just .224 against him in 2017, and he is fanning more than a batter per inning. Still, a red flag is that he's allowed a staggering 14 home runs this season, which is tied for second-to-last in the International League. Nevertheless, with Sean Newcomb now in the big leagues, Sims could be the next man up for Atlanta. |
