Jun 22 2025Musgrove (elbow) progressed to throwing from 105 feet early in the week, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove continues to make steady progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The veteran hurler has been playing catch three times a week since early April and has been traveling with the Padres. Musgrove isn't expected to pitch this season, but he should be good to go next spring.
May 18 2025Musgrove (elbow) is expected to begin throwing from 90 feet during the upcoming week, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove continues to rehab from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in October. The veteran hurler has been traveling with San Diego and playing catch three times per week. Musgrove has thrown up to 75 feet so far, so the plan for him to move up to 90 feet represents a slight increase. The right-hander isn't likely to be able to pitch in games until next season.
Apr 7 2025Musgrove (elbow) played catch Monday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was encouraged by Monday's throwing session, citing all of the rehab he's done in the last six months to simply make it to this point. The team doesn't expect him to make his return during the 2025 campaign, but if all continues to go as planned, he should be in a great spot to be ready for the beginning of 2026.
Mar 20 2025The Padres placed Musgrove (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove will miss the entire 2025 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October, so the Padres will strip him of his spot on the 40-man roster and give it to camp standout Gavin Sheets. Musgrove has been working out using plyometric balls this spring, but he isn't expected to begin a proper throwing program until around midseason.
Feb 9 2025Musgrove (elbow) will work out with plyometric balls during spring training but isn't expected to start a throwing program until around midseason, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove is recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in October. While he'll be with the team and do some non-throwing workouts during spring camp, the fact that the veteran right-hander won't begin throwing until midseason emphasizes how far away he is from returning to game action. Though it's possible Musgrove could pitch near the end of the coming campaign, the more likely scenario is that his next time on a major-league mound will come during the 2026 season.
Oct 11 2024Musgrove underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following an early exit from his appearance in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Oct. 2 due to an elbow injury, an MRI revealed that Musgrove would need to undergo Tommy John surgery before returning to the mound. The timing of his procedure gives him an outside chance to pitch toward the very end of next season, but the 31-year-old righty will most likely be sidelined until 2026.
Oct 4 2024General manager A.J. Preller said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) has a UCL injury in his right elbow and will require Tommy John surgery, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove underwent an MRI on his right elbow Thursday after injuring it during Wednesday's wild-card start against Atlanta. The MRI revealed a UCL injury, and the 31-year-old right-hander will have to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out of action through the 2024 postseason and most, if not all, of 2025. With Musgrove out for the rest of the playoffs, Martin Perez -- who did not pitch in the wild-card series -- is the next man up in the Padres' rotation behind Dylan Cease, Michael King and Yu Darvish.
Oct 3 2024Musgrove will undergo and MRI on his injured right elbow Thursday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had to depart Wednesday's start versus Atlanta due to what the Padres are referring to now simply as right elbow tightness. Initial testing on his UCL came back clean, but more clarity will be available following Thursday's exam. For what it's worth, Musgrove said the discomfort he felt Wednesday was "very different" from the pain he experienced due to a bone spur in his elbow which sent him to the injured list twice earlier this season. The pitcher also revealed that he'd been battling some soreness in the elbow prior to the outing. If Musgrove needs to be replaced on the NLDS roster, Martin Perez is a candidate to fill that slot.
Oct 2 2024Musgrove left his start Wednesday in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series versus Atlanta due to right elbow tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove's elbow began to affect his velocity in the fourth inning of Wednesday's contest, forcing him out after just 3.2 frames of one-run ball. There's no telling if he'll be available for the NLDS if San Diego advances past Atlanta. It's worth noting that the 31-year-old has already landed on the IL twice this season due to elbow-related injuries.
Sep 27 2024Musgrove did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6.1 innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and cruised through the first six innings before allowing a two-run home run to Max Muncy in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. The right-hander was eventually relieved by Tanner Scott with one out in the frame, but not before logging his third consecutive quality start. Musgrove has also recorded at least six strikeouts in each of last five outings while issuing only four free passes over that stretch. He now carries a 2.51 ERA in September to go along with a 2-1 record.
Sep 20 2024Musgrove allowed four hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has turned in six scoreless frames in three of his four outings in September. The nine strikeouts matched his season high for the third time, and this was also the sixth time in 18 starts he avoided walking a batter. Musgrove trimmed his ERA to 3.95 with a 1.19 WHIP and 95:22 K:BB across 93.1 innings. He's lined up to make his last start of the regular season on the road versus the Dodgers.
Sep 15 2024Musgrove (6-5) earned the win over the Giants on Saturday, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove hit Mark Canha with a pitch to open the bottom of the first before then limiting the Giants to just three singles over his six innings of work. The right-hander induced 12 whiffs on the night en route to posting at least eight strikeouts for the third time in his last five outings. Musgrove has also hurled at least six shutout frames three times over that stretch while going 3-1. He now carries a 3.31 ERA over three starts in September to go along with a dominant 23:3 K:BB.
Sep 9 2024Musgrove (5-5) took the loss Sunday against the Giants, allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove blanked the Giants through three innings but completely unraveled in the fourth, allowing three home runs in the inning. It was an uncharacteristically bad start for Musgrove, who hadn't allowed a home run in any of his five starts since coming off the injured list Aug. 12. The six runs allowed also matched the amount of runs he'd given up combined over his last seven starts. Musgrove's strikeout numbers have been up, as he's sporting a 27:4 K:BB over his last 23.1 innings. For the year, he owns a 4.54 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 78:22 K:BB in 81.1 innings. Musgrove lines up to face the Giants on the road over the weekend his next time out.
Sep 2 2024Musgrove (5-4) earned the win against the Tigers on Monday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out eight over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was fantastic, yielding only singles while generating 15 swinging strikes on 94 pitches. He has excelled in five outings since returning from injury Aug. 12, yielding just four total earned runs and logging three consecutive quality starts. On the season, the 31-year-old owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 71:21 K:BB across 77 innings and lines up to face the Giants on Sunday.
Aug 28 2024Musgrove allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had mixed results in this contest. It was the first time in four starts since he returned from an elbow injury that he's allowed multiple runs, but he also saw a full workload of 94 pitches (61 strikes) to earn his second quality start in a row. Musgrove has been good since his return, shaking off both the injury and his struggles from early in the campaign. He's now at a 4.44 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 63:19 K:BB through 71 innings over 14 starts this season. The right-hander's next start is projected to be at home versus the Tigers.
Aug 23 2024Musgrove (4-4) allowed one hit and struck out nine over seven shutout innings to earn the win over the Mets on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove needed just 75 pitches (58 strikes) to get through seven frames in his best start of the campaign. That was his highest pitch count in three starts since returning from a bone bruise and bone spur in his right elbow. The 31-year-old trimmed his ERA from 4.97 to 4.43, and he's added a 1.26 WHIP and 60:18 K:BB over 65 innings across 13 starts this season. Musgrove's workload may still be limited heading into his next projected start, which is expected to be at St. Louis.
Aug 18 2024Musgrove allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove continues to be brought along slowly in his recovery from a bone bruise and bone spur in his throwing elbow. He stretched out to 73 pitches (47 strikes) and limited the damage to an Aaron Schunk RBI double in the third inning. Musgrove has allowed one run on five hits and three walks over 8.2 innings since his return. The veteran right-hander has a 4.97 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 51:18 K:BB through 58 innings over 12 starts this year. Musgrove will likely still have a slight workload restriction for his next start, which is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Mets.
Aug 12 2024Musgrove gave up two hits and issued one walk while striking out one batter over 4.1 scoreless innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove's first big-league start since May 26 went well, as the veteran hurler allowed just four baserunners (on two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch) while throwing 43 of 63 pitches for strikes. The right-hander made only one rehab appearance (Aug. 4 with Single-A Lake Elsinore) during which he tossed just 43 pitches, which explains why he was held to a limited workload Monday. Musgrove may be kept under some level of a pitch count for another start or two, but he figures to have more of a leash his time on the mound, which is tentatively slated to take place in Colorado.
Aug 8 2024Musgrove (elbow) will not rejoin the Padres' rotation this weekend in Miami as previously anticipated, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Shildt indicated previously that Musgrove would make a start against the Marlins this weekend, but he is not listed among the team's probable starters this weekend. Instead, he's likely to return Monday at home versus the Pirates, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, although that has not yet been confirmed by the team. Musgrove went 3.1 innings and threw 43 pitches in a rehab start with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Sunday. He's been out since late May due to a bone spur and bone bruise in his right elbow.
Aug 6 2024Musgrove (elbow) joined the Padres in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, and manager Mike Shildt said there's a "high probability" the pitcher returns from the 60-day injured list this weekend in Miami, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove went 3.1 innings and threw 43 pitches in his first rehab start with Single-A Lake Elsinore on Sunday and said Tuesday that he feels "physically ready" to rejoin the Padres rotation. He'll likely be limited to just 4-to-5 frames against the Marlins in what will be his first start at the big-league level since late May. Musgrove has been sidelined with a bone spur and bone bruise in his right elbow.
Aug 4 2024Musgrove (elbow) struck out two batters over 3.1 innings while allowing two earned runs on four hits and zero walks in his rehab start Sunday with Single-A Lake Elsinore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres initially planned to have Musgrove make his first rehab start with Double-A San Antonio, but after his flight to Texas on Saturday was cancelled, the organization ultimately had him stick around in California to begin his minor-league assignment. Though he was facing off against lower-caliber competition, Musgrove's results in his first start at any level since late May were generally encouraging. He spotted 35 of his 43 pitches for strikes in the outing, and his fastball sat around the 94-to-96 mile-per-hour range. Musgrove is expected to require one more start in the minors before he makes his return from the 60-day injured list.
Jul 31 2024Padres manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that Musgrove (elbow) will make a rehab appearance with a minor-league affiliate Sunday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw about 40 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Tuesday and has now been fully cleared for game action. Musgrove has been sidelined since late May due to a bone spur and bone bruise in his right elbow, and he'll likely need at least a couple starts in the minors before being ready to rejoin the Padres.
Jul 27 2024Musgrove (elbow) incorporated his full arsenal of breaking pitches in his most recent bullpen session and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove's bullpen Wednesday was significant not only because he brought breaking pitches into the mix, but also because he stepped up the intensity of his throwing. The right-hander has reported having no issues with his injured right elbow during his three bullpens to date, and the next step in his rehab could be a rehab stint with a minor-league squad. Should Musgrove continue to progress without setbacks, he could return to the Padres' rotation in early August.
Jul 21 2024Musgrove (elbow) threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bullpen was Musgrove's second since he went on the injured list June 1. The right-hander threw almost exclusively fastballs in his first session Wednesday, per MLB.com, and plans to increase his intensity as his throwing sessions progress. Padres manager Mike Shildt said Saturday that Musgrove is "clearly getting closer" to a return, though a target date for his activation hasn't yet been established.
Jul 14 2024Musgrove (elbow) is slated to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bullpen session will be Musgrove's first since he went on the injured list June 1 with a right elbow issue. The right-hander was diagnosed with a bone spur and a bone bruise shortly thereafter and received platelet-rich plasma and cortisone injections to address the injury. Musgrove has been playing catch since late June and threw off a mound July 10, though not as part of a full bullpen session. He's expected to accompany the Padres on their three-city road trip following the All-Star break and should continue to toss bullpen sessions during that time with the aim of gradually increasing the intensity of his throwing. He'll likely need a series of minor-league rehab starts prior to being activated off the 60-day IL, and he probably won't be ready to return to the big-league club's rotation until at least early August.
Jun 28 2024Musgrove (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Transferring Musgrove to the 60-day IL opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Davis, who'll join the big-league roster. Though Musgrove began playing catch Monday, he still has plenty of checkpoints to hi before being cleared and likely won't be back in action until after the All-Star break.
Jun 24 2024Musgrove (elbow) will play catch Monday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has been throwing plyo balls in recent days, but this will be his first time playing catch since he landed on the injured list at the beginning of the month. Eventual surgery for the right-hander isn't ruled out, but he will attempt to come back without an operation. Even if the non-surgical route for Musgrove works, he is still several weeks away from a potential return.
Jun 22 2024Musgrove (elbow) lightly threw weighted plyometric balls Thursday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A previous report indicated Musgrove could play catch mid-week, but it turns out the extent of his throwing was the work he did with the plyo balls. The workout was, however, a step in his progression toward playing catch, which could happen before the end of the month. Musgrove doesn't seem close to taking part in a rehab assignment and isn't likely to be activated off the injured list until after the All-Star break.
Jun 17 2024Musgrove (elbow) is expected to play catch Wednesday or Thursday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will be the first time Musgrove has thrown since he went on the injured list June 1 due to a bone spur in his right elbow. The right-hander acknowledged that his new slider may have contributed to the issue and indicated Saturday that he is considering how to alter either the grip or his wrist action on the pitch. Musgrove also shared that he is working to change the landing on his delivery in order to reduce the stress on his arm, saying, "I do think that that delivery, like the release point and like how it's coming out of my hand right now, now that it's aggravated, I've got to try to make some kind of adjustment to not re-aggravate it without having months of rest time and let it calm down. I gotta find a way to adjust." There's still a possibility that the veteran hurler will need surgery to remove the bone spur, but even if he avoids that scenario, he probably won't be ready to rejoin the Padres until late July.
Jun 15 2024Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) is getting closer to picking up a ball and starting a throwing program, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow in early June and consequently received PRP and cortisone injections. While Shildt said Friday that the veteran pitcher could resume throwing soon, he didn't give specifics on a timeline. Given that Musgrove dealt with a similar injury in May, the Padres are unlikely to rush him back, and he's probably at least a month away from a return.
Jun 6 2024Musgrove has been diagnosed with a bone spur and a bone bruise in his right elbow, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove got PRP and cortisone injections with the hope of resuming throwing in two weeks. However, there is also the caveat that surgery will be required if healing does not occur. That leaves Musgrove's potential timeline to return to the mound unclear, though it would be surprising to see him back on the mound prior to the All-Star break based on this most recent news.
Jun 1 2024The Padres placed Musgrove on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right elbow inflammation, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was originally slated to start Saturday against the Royals, but he will now return to the injured list after experiencing further issues with his right elbow/triceps. The 31-year-old was able to return from the IL after 16 days following his first encounter with elbow problems in May, but the Padres will likely bring him back slower this time around to ensure his elbow is back to 100 percent the next time he takes the mound. Randy Vasquez was recalled from Triple-A to start in Musgrove's place Saturday and will likely remain in the Padres' rotation until Musgrove is able to return.
May 27 2024Musgrove did not factor into the decision in Sunday's win over the Yankees, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove blanked the Yankees through five before Juan Soto finally opened up the scoring with a one-out RBI double in the sixth that prompted Musgrove's exit after 87 pitches. Despite remaining winless since April 21, Sunday's start was an encouraging showing and one of Musgrove's best starts in what's been a tough season for him so far. The 31-year-old will carry a 5.66 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 44:15 K:BB (49.1 innings) into a road start against the Royals this weekend.
May 21 2024Musgrove (3-4) took the loss Tuesday against the Reds, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and two walks over three innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove appeared a bit rusty in his first start since May 1, ultimately needing 66 pitches to make it through three innings -- he'd allow a pair of unearned runs after an errant pickoff throw in the second. Overall, the 31-year-old Musgrove sports a 5.93 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP and 39:15 K:BB across nine starts (44 innings) this season. He'll look to go deeper in his next outing, currently scheduled for Sunday at home against the Yankees.
May 19 2024Musgrove (elbow) is listed as the Padres' probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Reds, ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was originally expected to return from the injured list to start Sunday in Atlanta, but Yu Darvish is now pitching that contest following Saturday's postponement. Musgrove will return from elbow inflammation without going on a rehab assignment, so he could have some minor workload limitations in his first start back.
May 18 2024Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) is "in a great spot" to return to the team's rotation Sunday in Atlanta, Sammy Levitt of 97.3 The Fan reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has thrown two bullpen sessions since going on the injured list with right elbow inflammation May 5 and doesn't appear to need a rehab assignment. The right-hander played catch Friday, and if he recovers well from that, there's a good chance he'll take the mound for Sunday's matchup in Atlanta. Musgrove has struggled with a 6.37 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 41 innings this season, though he pitched well in his most recent start prior to landing on the IL, allowing two runs and striking out nine batters over six frames against Cincinnati on May 1.
May 15 2024Musgrove (elbow) could return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game in Atlanta, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dylan Cease is available to pitch Sunday on his normal four days' rest, but the Padres appear to be leaving the door open for Musgrove to return Sunday if he comes out of his bullpen session Wednesday no worse for the wear. Randy Vasquez has stepped in to fill the vacancy in the rotation since Musgrove was placed on the IL on May 5 with elbow inflammation.
May 10 2024Musgrove (elbow) played catch Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday marks the first time Musgrove has played catch since he landed on the injured list Sunday due to right elbow inflammation. The 31-year-old righty said everything looked good after receiving an MRI, and he still expects to return from the injured list when eligible next Friday. He owns a 6.37 ERA and 1.51 WHIP across 41 innings this season.
May 5 2024The Padres placed Musgrove on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right elbow inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was expected to start Tuesday against the Cubs but will now be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks. It's unclear when the injury surfaced for the right-hander, who struck out nine and allowed two runs over six innings his last time out versus the Cubs. According to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, there's hope Musgrove will be able to return from the injured list when first eligible May 17 in Atlanta. Randy Vasquez was recalled in a corresponding move and could step into the rotation for San Diego.
May 1 2024Musgrove didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts over six innings against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being tagged for seven runs and four long balls in his last start, Musgrove set a season high in strikeouts and notched his fourth quality start of the campaign. While three of the four hits did go for extra bases, including a first-inning solo homer by Spencer Steer, Musgrove was able to keep his opponent to less than three runs for the first time in four starts. Through eight starts, Musgrove owns a 2.2 HR/9 after having not allowed more than 1.1 HR/9 since 2017. He's tentatively scheduled for a start Tuesday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Apr 26 2024Musgrove (3-3) allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks over 3.2 innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was cursed by the long ball Friday. He gave up a leadoff shot to Kyle Schwarber to begin the game before Philadelphia crushed three more homers during a four-run third inning. Musgrove is still searching for some consistency and his ERA has shot up to 6.94 through seven starts (35 innings). While he's struck out more than five batters just one time in 2024, he set a new season best by forcing 15 whiffs Friday, including seven with the slider. Musgrove will carry a lackluster 27:13 K:BB into his next outing, which is projected to be at home against the Reds.
Apr 22 2024Musgrove (3-2) got the win Sunday over the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out three over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove reached seven innings for the first time this season and the first time since July 4 of last year. Most of the damage against him in this one came from the long ball when Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement took him deep in back-to-back innings early on. Schneider then later grounded in a run in the seventh before Musgrove's day concluded. He's exhibiting lower strikeout numbers early on compared to past seasons and has five or fewer strikeouts in all but one start thus far. Musgrove will take a 5.74 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB (31.1 innings) into his next start, which projects to come against the Phillies.
Apr 15 2024Musgrove (2-2) allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks over six innings Monday, striking out three and earning a win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove produced a fairly lackluster line, but it was his second quality start of the year. He coughed up all three runs in the first two innings before settling in for a decent outing. The 31-year-old righty still hasn't found a groove in 2024; Musgrove is sporting a 6.29 ERA with a 20:11 K:BB through 24.1 frames. He forced just six swinging strikes Monday, tying his lowest mark of the year. Musgrove is currently in line to face the Blue Jays at home this weekend.
Apr 10 2024Musgrove (1-2) was handed the loss Tuesday against the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All of the damage against Musgrove came in the fifth, as he surrendered a solo homer to Yan Gomes to open up the inning, then gave up a walk, a single and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. While Musgrove was pulled at that point, he was stuck with three earned runs as reliever Stephen Kolek surrendered a grand slam to Christopher Morel on his very first pitch. After finishing each of the last three seasons with an ERA below 3.20, Musgrove's ERA sits at 6.87 through four starts. He's allowed at least four runs in all but one appearance and will look for improvement Monday when he's projected to start against the Brewers.
Apr 3 2024Musgrove (1-1) picked up the win Wednesday against the Cardinals, allowing one run on five hits and a walk across six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove finally found his footing three starts into 2024, putting together his first quality start of the season and bringing down his ERA from 9.72 to 6.28. Fantasy managers who invested in Musgrove can breathe a sigh of relief, as he showed the mix of strikeout ability and power prevention that made him so effective in 2023. Musgrove will look to take another large step away from his early-season woes, with a matchup against the Cubs in San Diego on tap for his next projected start.
Mar 29 2024Musgrove (0-1) took the loss against the Giants on Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been a tough start to the campaign for Musgrove, who's now allowed nine runs on 15 hits through 8.1 innings over his first two outings. The 31-year-old Musgrove went 10-3 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 97 strikeouts in 17 stars last season. He'll look to get on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week at home versus St. Louis.
Mar 25 2024Musgrove will start for the Padres on Friday against the Giants, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres went with Yu Darvish and Musgrove in their two games in South Korea versus the Dodgers and have elected to run it back with those two in their first two contests back in the states. Musgrove was roughed up for five runs over just 2.2 innings back on March 21 against the Dodgers.
Mar 21 2024Musgrove allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 2.2 innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Thursday in the second game of the Seoul Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres handed Musgrove a five-run lead before he even took the mound for his season debut, but the right-hander was unable to hold the Dodgers at bay. Los Angeles struck for a run in each of the first two frames before chasing Musgrove in the third. While San Diego still went on to win, this was certainly not a promising beginning from an individual perspective for Musgrove, who got to only 60 pitches (38 of which were strikes) before he was removed. Musgrove's season was cut short by a shoulder injury last year, and he gave up nine earned runs in six innings during spring training, so questions will remain about lingering impacts of the injury until he begins to look better on the mound.
Mar 11 2024Musgrove is scheduled to start the Padres' second game of the regular season March 21 versus the Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll be opposing Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the second contest of the two-game season-opening set in South Korea, while Yu Darvish gets the ball for the Friars in the March 20 opener and matches up against Tyler Glasnow. Musgrove finished the 2023 campaign on the shelf due to right shoulder inflammation, but he was fully cleared ahead of spring training. He's been roughed up for eight earned runs on five hits and two walks over 1.2 innings through his first two Cactus League starts, but he'll likely have one more tune-up outing in Arizona before he toes the rubber in Seoul. After the two-game series in South Korea, the Padres will hold their domestic opener March 28 versus the Giants at Petco Park. Manager Mike Shildt implied Monday that there's a good chance that Musgrove will get the nod ahead of Darvish for the first game in San Diego, per Dennis Lin of The Athletic.
Feb 22 2024Musgrove allowed four runs on two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while failing to record an out against the Dodgers in Thursday's Cactus League opener. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove loaded the bases on a walk, single and hit-by-pitch before serving up a two-run ground-rule double to Teoscar Hernandez. The right-handed hurler was then pulled but charged with two more runs following his departure. It wasn't the most inspiring start from Musgrove, but it was at least promising to see him on the mound for San Diego's first exhibition contest after he ended last year on the 60-day IL due to a shoulder injury. Of course, fantasy managers shouldn't read much into Thursday's poor showing given the exhibition nature of the contest.
Feb 5 2024Padres manager Mike Shildt last last week that Musgrove (shoulder) will not have any limitations in spring training, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: San Diego's new skipper revealed that Musgrove has already thrown some bullpen sessions and even faced some hitters and has bounced back with no issues. The veteran right-hander missed the final two months of last season with right shoulder inflammation and also dealt with elbow bursitis earlier in the year. Musgrove was highly effective in 2023 when on the mound, collecting a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 97:21 K:BB over 97.1 frames. It's certainly encouraging that it looks like he'll enter spring training with no limits, but Musgrove will remain a health red flag going into 2024.
Sep 30 2023The Padres transferred Musgrove (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has been on the injured list since early August due to inflammation in his right shoulder. He was able to resume throwing last Friday, but with the Padres officially eliminated from playoff contention, his focus has shifted to getting ready for 2024. Musgrove's spot on the 40-man roster will be filled by Chandler Seagle, who was selected from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.
Sep 23 2023Musgrove (shoulder) restarted a throwing program Friday and will pace himself moving forward according to the Padres' chances of making the postseason, Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribube reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was eased off his throwing program in mid-September with San Diego apparently out of playoff contention, though the hurler clarified Friday that he was always going to resume throwing Sept. 23. However, the plan moving forward may have changed a bit with the Padres reeling off eight straight wins and getting to within four games of the final NL wild-card spot. They still have a pretty daunting task in trying to make up that ground with just over a week left in the regular season, but it appears Musgrove may ramp back up more quickly than expected if the team is able to cut further into the deficit. Heilbrunn reports that should the pieces fall into place and the Padres were to qualify for the playoffs, Musgrove would look to contribute out of the bullpen.
Sep 15 2023Musgrove (shoulder) will not pitch again in 2023, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had his throwing program slowed, meaning he won't be able to return again this season. He reportedly hasn't suffered a setback, but the Padres instead have opted to take a conservative approach given that they've fallen out of playoff contention. Musgove will end the campaign with a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and a 97:21 K:BB across 97.1 frames.
Sep 13 2023Musgrove (shoulder) continues to play catch but has yet to throw off a mound as of Tuesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres officially shut Yu Darvish (elbow) down for the season Tuesday, and though the team hasn't made any statements about Musgrove's status, the right-hander's return from the 15-day injured list is considered "highly unlikely," given where he stands in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation along with San Diego's unfavorable position in the National League wild-card race. Assuming Musgrove isn't activated before the season ends Oct. 1, he'll finish his third year in San Diego with a 10-3 record, 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 97:21 K:BB over 97.1 innings.
Aug 22 2023Musgrove (shoulder) will play catch Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be the first time he's done any throwing since he landed on the injured list at the beginning of the month with right shoulder capsule inflammation. Musgrove will require several flat-round sessions before being cleared for mound work, and whether he makes it back this season remains to be seen. "I know he's looking forward to it," Padres manager Bob Melvin said. "But we want to kind of push the brakes a little bit. ... It's not going to be an accelerated path forward. It's going to be several of those before he would even consider getting on a mound, so we're still a ways away."
Aug 10 2023Musgrove (shoulder) is expected to begin playing catch around Aug. 24, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove is entering the second week of a three-week shutdown period that followed his Aug. 4 placement on the injured list due to inflammation in his right shoulder capsule. The best-case scenario is that he returns to the Padres' rotation in mid-September, but he'll have to avoid even minor setbacks. It should also be noted that San Diego is currently at risk of falling out of NL Wild Card contention, which could affect the motivation here.
Aug 4 2023Musgrove was diagnosed with inflammation in his right shoulder capsule Friday and placed on the 15-day injured list. He will be shut down for at least three weeks, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shoulder soreness kept Musgrove from making his scheduled start Wednesday against Colorado, and the issue has now been identified as something that will keep him on the shelf for a considerable amount of time. The Padres haven't yet ruled out Musgrove for the rest of the season, but they might need the incentive of a late playoff push to put him back on the mound in 2023.
Aug 2 2023Musgrove has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Rockies due to "minor" right shoulder soreness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: At least for the time being, the Padres don't view Musgrove's shoulder issue as anything too serious and believe he can avoid a trip to the injured list. Musgrove is tentatively in line to make his next turn through the rotation either next Tuesday or Wednesday in Seattle. Nick Martinez, who has been working out of the bullpen since late April, will make a spot start in Colorado in Musgrove's stead.
Jul 29 2023Musgrove (10-3) allowed four hits and two walks over six shutout frames Friday, striking out five and earning a win over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove gave up two extra-base hits and had to work around some tight spots but still turned in his fourth scoreless appearance of the year. It took him about a month to shake off the early season rust, but he's been incredible since then; over his last 12 starts, Musgrove is 9-1 with a 1.84 ERA. On the year, his ERA sits at 3.05 to go with a 97:21 K:BB. His next start is projected to be in Colorado.
Jul 23 2023Musgrove (9-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings against the Tigers. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers got to Musgrove early Sunday, taking an early lead on Spencer Torkelson's solo homer in the first inning before tacking on two more runs in the third. Musgrove would eventually settle in and finish with a quality start, his eighth in a row, though he also took his first loss since May 20. The 30-year-old right-hander has been excellent since the start of June, pitching to a 2.00 ERA over his last 11 starts. Overall, Musgrove sports a 3.25 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP and 92:19 K:BB through 16 starts (91.1 innings) this season.
Jul 19 2023Musgrove (9-2) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings in a 9-1 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander continues to roll, delivering his seventh straight quality start and eighth straight winning decision, with his last loss coming May 20. Since then, Musgrove sports a 1.76 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 61:9 K:BB through 61.1 innings. He'll look to extend those streaks in his next outing, likely to come this weekend in Detroit.
Jul 9 2023Musgrove (8-2) yielded three hits over six scoreless frames Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he only allowed three singles, Musgrove also plunked four batters. Still, his final line was dominant and he's gone 7-0 over his last nine starts. During that stretch, he's posted an impressive 54:8 K:BB through 55.1 frames. Musgrove dropped his season ERA to 3.29 with a 79:17 K:BB through 14 starts.
Jul 4 2023Musgrove (7-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over seven innings against the Angels. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove recorded double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season and now has a 2.06 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 47:8 K:BB across 49.1 frames in his past eight starts. He has a 6-0 record during that stretch with seven quality starts. The right-hander had a delayed start to the campaign due to shoulder and toe injuries and struggled in his first five outings, but he's looking more and more like the All-Star that posted a 3.06 ERA and 9.6 K/9 over the previous two seasons.
Jun 29 2023Musgrove did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove made it through the first three innings unscathed before allowing the Pirates' first run of the day on a sacrifice fly with two outs in the fourth. He surrendered only two runs on the afternoon despite the leadoff man reaching base in four of Musgrove's six innings of work, and the right-hander has now allowed two runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts. He hasn't lost a decision since May 20 against the Red Sox.
Jun 24 2023Musgrove (6-2) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on six hits over seven innings against the Nationals. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had one of his best appearances of the season against the floundering Nationals. The right-hander has not allowed more than three runs in a start since May 20 against Boston, and he has allowed only one homer this entire month. The former Pirate is also on pace to clear his career high of 11 wins in a season.
Jun 18 2023Musgrove (5-2) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one over six innings to earn the win Sunday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove turned in his fourth quality start of the year on an efficient 85 pitches (61 strikes) while keeping the Rays' challenging offense in check. The right-hander has given up just eight runs (seven earned) over his last 29.1 innings, trimming his ERA from 6.75 on May 20 to 4.22 now. He's added a 1.31 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB through 53.1 innings across 10 starts. Musgrove is still managing elbow bursitis, but it doesn't appear to be negatively impacting his play of late. He's lined up to make his next start at home versus the Nationals.
Jun 14 2023Musgrove has been wearing a compression sleeve on his right arm for much of the season because he's dealt with elbow bursitis, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The feeling is that the issue might have been caused by the aggressive treatment Musgrove underwent this spring to combat healing in his fractured left big toe. "I had some elbow issues early in spring, possibly from the hyperbaric (chamber)," he said. "Went to Mexico, and it blew up in Mexico, just really swollen. Since then it has been manageable, but it seems like the elevation and pressurized areas are causing more and more trouble." Musgrove added that he "had a leak in the bursa sac or a rupture in there" that "causes swelling and causes loss of range of motion." The righty has an uncharacteristic 4.37 ERA on the season, although that mark has been 1.93 over his last four starts. There are no plans for any down time for Musgrove. Rather, the elbow issue seems like something he may just have to manage for a while longer but should eventually heal itself.
Jun 13 2023Musgrove (4-2) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five over six innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed multiple runs for the first time in four starts, but he also picked up his third quality start over that span. The right-hander has started to more regularly get through six innings after failing to do so in his first five starts of the season. He's now at a 4.37 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 47:14 K:BB over 47.1 innings through nine starts. Musgrove is lined up for a tougher home start versus the Rays this weekend.
Jun 6 2023Musgrove allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had a solid outing, but the Mariners were able to work some long counts against him. The right-hander needed 102 pitches (68 strikes) to complete five innings. He's allowed just three runs (two earned) over 17.1 innings across his last three starts, and his eight strikeouts Tuesday were a season high. Musgrove's now at a 4.35 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 42:13 K:BB through 41.1 innings through eight starts overall. He's lined up for a home start versus the Guardians next week.
Jun 1 2023Musgrove (3-2) earned the win Thursday, allowing one unearned run on three hits and three walks over six innings against the Marlins. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has won his last two starts, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 12.1 innings after pitching to a 6.75 ERA in his first five outings. Through seven starts, the 30-year-old right-hander now sports a 4.71 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB across 36.1 innings. Musgrove will look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively lined up for next week against Seattle.
May 26 2023Musgrove (2-2) allowed one run on six hits over 6.1 innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove rolled through five shutout frames to begin the game and retired the first 11 batters he faced. The 30-year-old tied his season high with six punchouts while picking up his first win since April 22. He hasn't found any sustained success since returning from a toe injury; Musgrove owns a 5.64 ERA and has allowed at least four runs in three of his six starts. He's lined up for a start in Miami where he'll look to build on Friday's strong outing.
May 20 2023Musgrove (1-2) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Emmanuel Valdez accounted for much of the damage against Musgrove with a three-run home run in the second inning. Alex Verdugo added an RBI single in the fourth. Musgrove still has yet to complete six innings in any of his five starts this season, and it's mostly been due to ineffective pitching, as evidenced by his 6.75 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB over 24 innings. The 30-year-old is projected for a road start versus the Yankees next week.
May 13 2023Musgrove (1-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: J.D. Martinez took Musgrove deep for a three-run home run in the first inning, and Will Smith added an RBI single in the third to close out the scoring. This was Musgrove's longest outing so far, and he threw 61 of 97 pitches for strikes despite some lackluster control. He's at a 6.63 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB across 19 innings through four starts. The right-hander is projected for a home start versus the Red Sox next weekend.
May 7 2023Musgrove allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks over five-plus innings during Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove worked through five shutout frames before the Dodgers finally brought home a run in the sixth. He was in line for the victory before Josh Hader blew a save in the ninth inning. It was Musgrove's best start after coughing up a combined 10 runs in his first two outings. He's now sporting a 6.75 ERA across 13.1 innings. Musgrove is currently lined up for a rematch with the Dodgers in Los Angeles next week.
May 4 2023Musgrove is having his next start pushed back from Friday to Sunday after he developed a blister on his foot, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove struggled in his previous outing and lasted only 3.1 innings, though it's unclear if that was caused by the injury. The positive news is that the issue doesn't seem likely to force him to the injured list or to miss a full turn through the rotation. Yu Darvish will now start Friday, followed by Blake Snell on Saturday.
Apr 29 2023Musgrove did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing seven runs on six hits and one walk over 3.1 innings against San Francisco. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove started the fourth inning with a 5-2 lead. But five of the six batters he faced in the inning reached, and all five came around to score. Musgrove has made two starts this season after a toe and shoulder injury held him out. After a career-best 2.93 ERA last season, Musgrove sits at 10.80 in 2023. His next start is tentatively scheduled against the Dodgers, where he will look to get on track.
Apr 4 2023Musgrove (toe) is scheduled to make a rehab start Thursday with Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has been building in simulated settings over the last couple of weeks as he completes his recovery from a February toe fracture, so it might just be a one-start rehab stint for the 30-year-old right-hander. There should be a better idea of the Padres' plan following Thursday's outing against the Triple-A affiliate of the Giants. Musgrove is eligible to be activated from the 15-day IL next Tuesday.
Mar 30 2023Musgrove (toe) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to March 27. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Musgrove will open the year on the IL as he completes his recovery from a February toe fracture. He's scheduled to throw in a minor-league game this Saturday and then the Padres can map out a blueprint for his 2023 debut. It shouldn't be long.
Mar 25 2023Musgrove (toe) will begin the season on the injured list but is targeting a return April 11 against the Mets or April 16 against the Brewers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove broke his toe in the weight room at the end of February. Initial reports said that he'd miss at least two regular-season starts, and while he's been pursuing an aggressive timeline which seemed to give him a shot at avoiding the injured list and debuting on April 6, the Padres have evidently decided not to risk it. He pitched in a simulated game Wednesday and will pitch in a minor-league contest Monday, but he's back on his original timeline and will wind up missing at least two turns in the rotation.
Mar 11 2023Musgrove (toe) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove broke his left big toe at the end of February and was originally expected to be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks. He's ahead of schedule, however, as he resumed throwing on flat ground Wednesday and is now throwing bullpens three days later. Per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, he's targeting a season debut against Atlanta on April 6. Whether or not he can hit that aggressive timetable is not yet clear.
Mar 8 2023Musgrove (toe) threw on flat ground Wednesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove didn't land on his left foot in order to protect his fractured big toe. He has been able to put some weight on the toe, however, and said he didn't feel any discomfort while doing so. Musgrove has been spending time in a hyperbaric chamber every day since suffering the injury in an attempt to speed up the recovery process. The initial projection has Musgrove missing at least his first two regular-season starts.
Mar 6 2023Musgrove has been lying in a hyperbaric chamber every day in an attempt to recover more quickly from his fractured left big toe, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The idea behind the treatment is that the pressurized chamber may help Musgrove's body create stem cells to promote healing, and the hurler has also been sticking to a special diet aimed at aiding in his recovery. There's certainly no guarantee that the measures will speed up Musgrove's return to the mound, but the right-hander explained that he's willing to "try anything...even if it knocks a day or two off." While the pitcher's determination is certainly admirable, fantasy managers shouldn't count on it resulting in an adjustment to the initial projection of him missing about two starts. Musgrove acknowledged the need to be wise about rushing back too quickly, stating, "I know that I gotta build up and they're gonna do it the right way -- missing a start or two now to not have to deal with it for the rest of year."
Mar 1 2023Musgrove (toe) is expected to miss at least two regular-season starts, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove will be shut down from throwing for at least two weeks after fracturing his left big toe when he dropped a kettle ball on his foot while working out. When exactly he'll be ready to rejoin the Padres' rotation seems like an open-ended question, as he'll surely need additional X-rays to see how the bone is healing. The Padres had been leaning toward going with a six-man rotation at the start of the season, but those plans are now up in the air.
Feb 28 2023Padres manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that it will be a minimum of a couple weeks before Musgrove (toe) can resume throwing, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove suffered a fracture to the big toe on his left foot during a weight room mishap Monday. He's going to work with the Padres' training staff to keep his arm strong throughout the healing process, but this is obviously a significant setback to his readiness for the beginning of the 2023 regular season. He'll almost certainly be placed on the 15-day IL ahead of Opening Day and could wind up missing much -- or all -- of the first month of meaningful games.
Feb 22 2023Musgrove had four wisdom teeth removed Tuesday but still threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The tooth extractions apparently went smoothly given Musgrove's ability to stay on schedule with his bullpen session the following day. The right-hander also received a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat a lingering left knee issue in the offseason, per Acee, but the hurler appears to be healthy as he prepares to take up the No. 2 spot in San Diego's rotation behind Yu Darvish.
Oct 21 2022Musgrove pitched 5.2 innings and took the loss during Friday's 4-2 defeat to the Phillies in Game 3 of the NLCS, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had a nightmare start to Game 3, giving up a leadoff homer to Kyle Schwarber in the first inning and walking the next two hitters, but he was able to escape the first with just one run allowed. The 29-year-old struggled with preventing hard contact Friday--five of the eight hits he allowed were extra-base hits. Musgrove was pulled in the seventh after allowing back to back doubles by Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos, ending his night with the most runs he has allowed in a start since early September. After quality starts against the Mets and Dodgers in the postseason, Musgrove looked primed to pitch well against the Phillies, but he underperformed Friday. His chances of pitching again in 2022 are up in the air as the Padres trail 2-1 in the series.
Oct 4 2022Musgrove pitched six scoreless innings against San Francisco on Monday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove got no offensive support while he was in the contest -- all seven of San Diego's runs came in the eighth inning, after the starter departed -- but he was nonetheless in fine form in his final start of the regular season. The right-hander finished the campaign with a flourish, giving up just one earned run while posting a 27:8 K:BB across 22 innings over his final four starts. Musgrove's second campaign in San Diego was even better than his first, as he compiled a career-best 2.93 ERA and 1.08 WHIP along with 10 wins and a 184:42 K:BB over 181 frames. He'll likely get Game 3 (if necessary) in the Padres' upcoming wild-card series.
Sep 29 2022Musgrove did not factor in the decision against the Dodgers on Wednesday, pitching five scoreless innings during which he allowed four hits and four walks while striking out eight batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove wasn't at his sharpest in the outing, as he needed 106 pitches to get through five frames and tied a season high with four walks. He twice loaded the bases and allowed at least one baserunner in all but one of his innings, but he managed to escape without surrendering any runs. Musgrove has now given up just one run over his past three starts covering 16 innings, lowering his season ERA to 3.03. That's on pace to be the best of his career, and he can tie his single-season high mark in wins with a victory in his final start of the regular season next week.
Sep 22 2022Musgrove allowed a run on five hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings in a 5-4 loss Thursday against St. Louis. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed two baserunners in each of the first two innings but managed to get out of each without a run scoring. The lone run came on a Lars Nootbaar solo homer in the fifth. He was removed after throwing just 72 pitches with the Padres leading 3-1. Homers have been a bit of an issue for him since the All-Star break, as he's allowed 13 long balls in 66 innings after allowing nine in 99 first-half frames. His next start will likely be in the middle of next week against the Dodgers.
Sep 17 2022Musgrove (10-7) earned the win during Saturday's 2-0 victory against Arizona, allowing four hits while striking out eight in six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove spread the damage evenly, not permitting more than one baserunner in any frame, and fell in line for the win once San Diego took the lead in the fourth inning. He hadn't allowed fewer than three runs in his last four starts, during which he's surrendered 17 runs (13 earned) in 20 innings. Additionally, the eight strikeouts are Musgrove's second highest total in his last 13 turns while the win was his second in his last 15. Musgrove carries a 3.16 ERA into his next start, scheduled to come next weekend in Colorado.
Sep 11 2022Musgrove (9-7) took the loss during Sunday's 11-2 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove cruised through four scoreless frames but encountered trouble thereafter, surrendering a pair of solo homers in the fifth inning and permitted four baserunners and two runs in the sixth before departing. The 29-year-old fired 57 of 77 pitches for strikes with a healthy 11 of the swinging variety but has struggled through two September starts, allowing nine runs and 18 baserunners across 9.2 innings. Musgrove carries a 3.28 ERA and 1.09 WHIP into his next start, scheduled to come next weekend in Arizona.
Sep 6 2022Musgrove allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove snapped a seven-start streak of allowing a home run in his last outing, but the Diamondbacks had no trouble teeing off on him this time. All three of the homers he allowed were solo shots, and he was let off the hook for the loss as the Padres rallied for a walkoff win. Musgrove now has a 3.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 152:33 K:BB through 153.2 innings this year, though he's posted a 4.70 ERA across seven starts since the beginning of August. He's projected to make his next outing at home versus the Dodgers this weekend.
Aug 31 2022Musgrove (9-6) allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 11 across 6.2 innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed only one run through six innings, but he allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base in the seventh frame to account for the majority of the damage. Nevertheless, it was a positive outing for Musgrove, as he earned his first win since June 16 and recorded double-digit strikeouts for the first time since June 30. For the season, he owns a 3.01 ERA and 149:31 K:BB across 149.1 innings for the season.
Aug 27 2022Musgrove did not factor into the decision against the Royals on Friday, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out two and walking one over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed five runs Friday, but he was credited with only two earned runs due to two errors in a four-run, five-hit fourth inning. The five-run game comes off the heels of three consecutive quality starts where he had 16 total strikeouts. His ERA moved up slightly from 2.91 to 2.96 after the game.
Aug 20 2022Musgrove didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's 2-1 win against the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove limited Washington's offense to a Lane Thomas solo shot in the second inning but San Diego wasn't able to pull ahead until the seventh -- after he had been removed. The 29-year-old tossed 71 of 97 pitches for strikes with eight swinging strikes in recording his third-highest strikeout total during a 10-start winless stretch. Despite the recent drought, Musgrove has submitted three straight quality starts and possesses a superb 2.91 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 136 strikeouts in 139 innings. He's scheduled to take the mound again next weekend in Kansas City.
Aug 15 2022Musgrove (8-6) gave up three runs on eight hits over six innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove coughed up two runs in the second inning, including a solo shot by JJ Bleday, before allowing one more in the sixth. The 29-year-old righty is sporting a 2.98 ERA on the year but an unsightly 5.56 ERA over his last six starts. Musgrove's last six decisions have all been losses after he began the year 8-0. He'll look to turn things around at home against the Nationals this weekend.
Aug 9 2022Musgrove allowed a run on six hits and a hit batsman while striking out four over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove pitched well enough to win, but Josh Hader blew the save. The poor luck extended Musgrove's winless streak to eight straight starts, though Tuesday's outing counted as his fourth quality start in that span. The right-hander owns a 2.91 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 124:28 K:BB through 127 innings across 20 starts this year. He's projected for a favorable road start in Miami next week.
Aug 4 2022Musgrove (8-5) allowed six earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six across 4.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove gave up four earned runs -- including a three-run homer to Ryan McMahon -- in the fifth inning and turned in his shortest outing of the campaign. Some regression was inevitable, but Musgrove has now allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last four starts -- translating to a 7.29 ERA. Despite the bumpy stretch, Musgrove has a 3.00 ERA and 120:28 K:BB across 120 frames on the season.
Aug 1 2022Musgrove and the Padres agreed to terms Monday on a five-year, $100 million contract extension, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune previously reported Friday that the right-hander and Friars had agreed to the parameters of the extension, and the two sides were apparently able to iron out the remaining details of the contract over the weekend. The deal keeps Musgrove in his hometown city through the 2027 campaign, his age-34 season. After a strong debut season with San Diego in 2021, Musgrove has raised the bar in 2022 by submitting a 2.65 ERA and 0.99 WHIP across 18 starts while also recently making his first All-Star Game appearance.
Jul 30 2022Musgrove (8-4) took the loss during Saturday's 7-4 defeat at the hands of the Twins, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fresh off signing a rich contract extension, Musgrove limited the damage to a Byron Buxton solo shot in the fourth inning and another run on three baserunners in the fifth while tying his third-best mark of the season with eight strikeouts. Despite the quality start, San Diego could muster only one run early on, giving the 29-year-old his fourth straight losing decision after opening the season with eight consecutive wins. Musgrove's 2.65 ERA and 0.99 WHIP both rank 10th in MLB, and he'll look to get back in the win column against Colorado at midweek.
Jul 29 2022Musgrove agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract extension with the Padres on Friday, Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old righty was about to become a free agent after this season, and now he will be sticking around through what will likely be the rest of his prime years. Musgrove has a career-low 2.63 ERA and career-best 0.99 WHIP in 109.1 innings. He also has a chance to top his career high of 11 wins. (He's currently sitting with eight.)
Jul 24 2022Musgrove (8-3) took the loss Sunday versus the Mets. He allowed four runs on five hits, two walks and a hit batter with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove matched Carlos Carrasco for five innings. The Mets pulled their starter to begin the sixth, but the Padres stuck with Musgrove, who put four batters on base while recording only one out before Nick Martinez relieved him. Three of Musgrove's last five starts have been less than spectacular, and he's allowed 18 runs in 30.1 innings in that span. He's seen his ERA rise to 2.63 with a 0.99 WHIP and 106:25 K:BB through 109.1 innings in 17 starts. The right-hander will look to get back on track in a projected start at home versus the Twins next week.
Jul 13 2022Musgrove allowed five runs on nine hits and a hit batsman and struck out four in a no-decision Wednesday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove kept the ball in the yard, but that was about the only perk to his shaky start. This was the third time that he's allowed five or more runs in an outing this year, and it was the first time he failed to complete six innings. The right-hander finishes the first half with a 2.42 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 102:23 K:BB in 104 innings across 16 starts. He'll represent the National League at next week's All-Star Game, which marks Musgrove's first trip to the Midsummer Classic.
Jul 7 2022Musgrove struck out six in seven scoreless innings while allowing a hit, four walks and hitting a batter in a 2-1 extra-inning win Thursday against San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove did not allow a hit until LaMonte Wade's leadoff double in the sixth inning. Wade was the only baserunner to make it past first base against Musgrove. It was the fifth time in 15 starts that the 29-year-old has tossed at least six innings without allowing a run. Hitters are hitting .193/.250/.326 against Musgrove on the season. His next start will likely be in the middle of next week in Colorado.
Jul 1 2022Musgrove (8-2) took the loss against the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove would have likely encountered a better fate if not for Justin Turner's presence in the lineup. The Dodgers' third baseman took the veteran hurler deep twice to account for all three runs against him. Despite that obstacle, Musgrove pitched well, earning a quality start and racking up 15 swinging strikes along with a season-high 10 punchouts. The right-hander began the campaign with a win in each of his first eight decisions but has now dropped two straight. He's been the Padres' best starter, however, posting a 2.25 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 92:19 K:BB over 92 innings overall.
Jun 23 2022Musgrove (8-1) took his first loss of the season Thursday versus the Phillies. He allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was cruising through five frames with just one run, two hits and a walk allowed. The sixth was a different story, and home runs by Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto were enough to send Musgrove to the loss in his first game back from the COVID-19 injured list. The right-hander had not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his previous starts, and he still has a stellar 2.12 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP and 82:18 K:BB in 85 innings overall. He'll look to get back on his regular schedule leading into next week's projected start versus the Dodgers.
Jun 21 2022Musgrove (undisclosed) will be reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list to start Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old cleared the COVID-19 protocols Tuesday and will end up having his turn in the starting rotation pushed back one day due to the brief absence. Musgrove has produced a quality start in each of his 12 outings this season and has a 1.59 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 81:17 K:BB across 79 innings.
Jun 20 2022Musgrove has been able to throw while on the COVID-19 injured list but is expected to miss at least one turn in the rotation, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres have yet to specify whether Musgrove tested positive for the virus himself, but the fact that he's at least able to throw is encouraging either way. He isn't expected to make his next scheduled start Wednesday against Arizona, with Mike Clevinger scheduled to take the hill instead, but he may have a chance to return for his next turn in the rotation.
Jun 17 2022Musgrove was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres didn't announce whether Musgrove tested positive for coronavirus himself, so it's unclear if he's merely at risk of missing one start or likely to miss several. He certainly didn't look ill Friday, as he struck out nine batters while allowing just two runs in seven innings against the Cubs. Reiss Knehr was called up to take his place on the roster.
Jun 16 2022Musgrove (8-0) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out nine in seven innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove tossed 14 scoreless innings over his last two starts, but he allowed runs in the first and second innings during Thursday's outing at Wrigley Field. However, he struck out a season-high nine batters and got help from the Padres' offense to pick up his third consecutive win. The 29-year-old has yet to be charged with a loss this season and has been especially dominant over his last five starts, posting a 0.79 ERA and 34:11 K:BB in 34 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Jun 10 2022Musgrove (7-0) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out eight over six shutout innings to earn the win Friday over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has limited opponents to only one run in his last 27 innings across four starts. The Padres' offense gave him plenty of support Friday as he picked up his seventh win in 11 starts. The right-hander continues to deal when he's on the mound -- he owns a 1.50 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 72:16 K:BB through 72 innings this season. He'll look to keep this run of dominance going on the road versus the Cubs next week.
Jun 3 2022Musgrove (6-0) threw eight shutout innings Friday versus the Brewers, allowing just one hit, three walks and a hit batter while striking out six to earn the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove lost the bid for a perfect game in the third inning when he plunked Victor Caratini, but he was able to carry a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Kolten Wong broke that up with a two-out double. With just one run allowed in his last 21 innings, Musgrove is absolutely locked in lately despite allowing multiple walks in each of his last four starts. He's been stellar all year with a 1.64 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 64:14 K:BB through 66 innings overall. He's projected to for a home start versus the Rockies next week.
May 29 2022Musgrove registered a no-decision during Saturday's 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove cruised through every inning except the third and fourth, when he escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third and permitted his lone run in the fourth. Unfortunately, Taylor Rogers blew the save in the ninth as San Diego lost a game Musgrove started for the first time all season. The 29-year-old carries a dazzling 1.86 ERA and 0.98 WHIP -- both of which rank top 10 in MLB -- into a start against Milwaukee next weekend.
May 22 2022Musgrove (5-0) picked up the win in Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Giants, allowing four hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired 64 of 100 pitches for strikes as he not only kept his record unblemished, he delivered his eighth quality start in eight trips to the mound this season. Musgrove is blossoming into a true ace this season, and he'll take a 1.90 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 51:9 K:BB through 52 innings into his next outing.
May 15 2022Musgrove gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over six innings during Sunday's 7-3 win over Atlanta in 11 innings. He had six strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta tallied one run via a throwing error during the second inning, and the only runs Musgrove was responsible for in the contest came via a two-run home run from Dansby Swanson during the fourth frame. The right-hander otherwise held Atlanta to four singles, and he has yet to surrender more than two earned runs in any of his seven starts this season. Musgrove will carry a 2.20 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 47:6 K:BB into his next outing, which tentatively lines up for next weekend in San Francisco.
May 8 2022Musgrove allowed two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out eight in seven innings in a 3-2 win Sunday over Miami. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove retired the first eight batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He allowed a run to score on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a Jazz Chisholm solo homer to lead off the sixth. Over six starts, the righty has tossed at least six innings in each start and allowed two earned runs or less in each outing. With 39 innings pitched, the 29-year-old leads the National League. His next start is likely next weekend in Atlanta.
May 1 2022Musgrove (4-0) allowed a run on seven hits and no walks while striking out eight in seven innings to earn the win over the Pirates on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove gave up hits in three of the first four innings during Sunday's matchup, but he didn't give up a run until the bottom of the seventh. The right-hander had to settle for a no-decision in his season debut, but he's picked up wins in his last four outings. Musgrove has lasted at least six innings in every start this year and has posted a 1.97 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in 32 innings. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Marlins next Sunday.
Apr 26 2022Musgrove (3-0) earned the win over the Reds on Tuesday. He was charged with five runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk, striking out four in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Musgrove wasn't quite as dominant this time around against Cincinnati, the results were similar to last week. The right-hander cruised to a win, and he now has a 2.16 ERA and 25:2 K:BB in 25 innings this season. Blake Snell (groin) is set for another rehab outing Thursday, so Musgrove tentatively lines up for another start this week. He would get his former team in Pittsburgh.
Apr 19 2022Musgrove (2-0) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over 6.1 innings against the Reds. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander served up a homer to Tommy Pham in the first inning and an RBI single to Kyle Farmer in the sixth, but he was dominant in between. Musgrove walked the last batter he faced Tuesday -- Colin Moran. It was the first walk issued by Musgrove so far this season, giving him a 21:1 K:BB through 19 innings to go along with a 1.89 ERA. The Padres are listing Nick Martinez, Yu Darvish and Sean Manaea as the starters for this weekend's series against the Dodgers, meaning Musgrove will likely get these Reds again his next time out, this time in Cincinnati.
Apr 14 2022Musgrove (1-0) earned the win over Atlanta on Thursday, pitching 6.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed four hits and struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres jumped out to a five-run lead after two innings, allowing Musgrove to glide through a stress-free outing and secure his first win of the campaign. The right-hander allowed only one extra-base hit and registered a first-pitch strike against 17 of the 23 batters he faced. Over his first two starts of the campaign, Musgrove has posted a 14:0 K:BB while allowing just two runs over 12.2 frames. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come at home against the Reds early next week.
Mar 24 2022Either Musgrove or Yu Darvish will start against the Braves on Opening Day, according to manager Bob Melvin, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was statistically the Padres' best pitcher last season, posting career-best marks with 203 strikeouts, a 3.18 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. Meanwhile, Darvish enjoyed a strong start to his Padres tenure but faded in the second half, at least partly due to back and hip issues. The hurlers are expected to top the team's rotation again this season, and both are strong fantasy targets as third-or-fourth-tier starters.
Oct 2 2021Musgrove limited the Giants to one run on three hits with four strikeouts over five innings Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a wobbly September (5.14 ERA in five starts), Musgrove closed out his 2021 season with a terrific showing by limiting San Francisco to a Kris Bryant RBI single in the second inning. He also put up a zero in the walk column for the first time since May 30. Musgrove went 11-9 in his first season in San Diego and established personal-bests in ERA (3.18), innings pitched (181.1), strikeouts (203), WHIP (1.08) and opponents' batting average (.213). He also threw a pair of shutouts, the first of his career.
Sep 27 2021Musgrove didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Atlanta after allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks across five innings, striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove hadn't fanned that many batters since he posted two back-to-back nine-strikeout performances in late August, but the fact that he's also issued at least three walks in four straight appearances might be a bit concerning. The veteran hurler has also given up at least three runs in each of his last four appearances and owns a 5.14 ERA across five appearances this month.
Sep 21 2021Musgrove got a no-decision in Tuesday's 6-5 defeat at the hand of the Giants, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing Kevin Gausman and the Giants in consecutive turns, Musgrove pitched well early and was staked to a 4-1 lead but struggled the third time through the order, surrendering four runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings. The subpar outing ends a five-game stretch permitting nor more than three runs in any start and Musgrove now sports a 5.09 ERA across four September turns. He currently lines up to face Atlanta on Sunday.
Sep 16 2021Musgrove (11-9) earned the win over San Francisco on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For his second straight outing, Musgrove yielded exactly three runs over six frames, but whereas his last start resulted in a loss, the Padres gave the right-hander enough run support to notch a win Wednesday. The 28-year-old wasn't overpowering -- he induced only six swinging strikes and picked up just four punchouts -- but he was able to register his eighth quality start in his past 10 appearances. Musgrove will carry a 2.99 ERA into his next start, which is likely to come in a rematch with San Francisco -- this time at home -- early next week.
Sep 11 2021Musgrove (10-9) suffered the loss against the Dodgers on Friday, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on four hits and five walks while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The performance was not among Musgrove's best as a Padre -- he issued a season-high five walks and gave up three runs for the first time since Aug. 14 -- but he still managed to secure his third quality start in his past four outings. However, San Diego's offense remained stale against the division-rival Dodgers, resulting in the right-hander's ninth loss. Musgrove's so-so 10-9 record doesn't do justice to his effectiveness on the campaign, as he has posted a 2.93 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 180:45 K:BB across 159.2 innings. His next start is likely to come in San Francisco next week.
Sep 5 2021Musgrove (10-8) earned the win over Houston on Saturday, hurling 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed at least one baserunner in each of the six frames during which he took the mound and needed 100 pitches to get through 5.1 innings, but he was able to navigate around constant traffic to hold Houston to just two runs. The right-hander has held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in seven of his past eight starts, with the lone exception being an Aug. 14 blowup against Arizona. Musgrove has looked like the ace of the Padres' staff this season, leading all starters in wins (10), ERA (2.87), WHIP (1.01) and strikeouts (173).His next start is likely to take place in Los Angeles against the Dodgers on Friday.
Aug 27 2021Musgrove (9-8) allowed three hits and two walks over nine shutout innings Friday, striking out nine and earning a win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove completely dominated on the mound Friday, allowing just one Angel into scoring position in his second shutout of the year. He finished at least seven innings for the first time in August and has given up two or fewer runs in six of his last seven outings. Friday's masterpiece lowered his season ERA to 2.85 alongside a 169:39 K:BB through 148.1 innings. Musgrove is projected to face Houston at home next week.
Aug 22 2021Musgrove pitched six innings and Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out nine. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander surrendered a home run to leadoff hitter Odubel Herrera in the first inning, but that was the only tally the Phillies could muster against Musgrove in the contest. The quality start was Musgrove's fifth in his past six games, and he has registered a 2.75 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 over that span. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come against the Dodgers next week.
Aug 14 2021Musgrove (8-8) allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out four across five innings, taking the loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed a season-high 10 hits and six earned runs Saturday. He was outdone by opposing pitcher Tyler Gilbert's no-hitter. Musgrove surrendered a three-run homer to Drew Ellis as a part of a five-run first inning. The 28-year-old broke his streak of four straight quality starts. He carries a 3.11 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 151 strikeouts in 133.1 innings. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Phillies.
Aug 10 2021Musgrove (8-7) earned the win Monday against Miami after tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and a walk while fanning eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has been nothing short of outstanding of late, going undefeated in each of his last five starts and pitching at least six frames in his last four appearances. He's also posted four straight quality starts and hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of those four contests. The right-hander owns a sterling 1.44 ERA across 25 innings during that four-game stretch.
Aug 4 2021Musgrove allowed a run on two hits, three walks and a pair of hit batters while striking out five in six innings in a no-decision versus Oakland on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove didn't have the best control Wednesday, but he was only punished on a second-inning solo shot by Jed Lowrie. The 28-year-old right-hander has strung together three straight quality starts, allowing just three runs in his last 19 innings. He has a 2.87 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 139:32 K:BB across 122.1 innings this season. Musgrove is projected to make his next start versus Miami next week.
Jul 29 2021Musgrove (7-7) won Thursday's 3-0 victory over Colorado, allowing three hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove required just 91 pitches to last seven frames, retiring the last eight Rockies he faced and striking out five in a row at one point. The excellent showing lowered his ERA to 2.94, a top 15 mark in MLB, and the 11 whiffs are Musgrove's most since June 12.
Jul 24 2021Musgrove (6-7) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in a 5-2 victory over the Marlins. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander filled up the zone, tossing 69 of 98 pitches for strikes while delivering his first quality start since June 23 and his eighth of the year. Musgrove hasn't been able to recapture his no-hit form from early in the season, but he's kept battling -- since the beginning of June, he sports a 4.44 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 44:16 K:BB through 48.2 innings.
Jul 18 2021Musgrove allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings in Sunday's loss to the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove held the Nationals scoreless in four of his five innings, but he allowed four runs in the third inning and was forced to settle for a no-decision as a result. The right-hander had posted a 2.08 ERA across the first two months of the season, but he's now given up at least four runs in three of his last four starts. Musgrove tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Miami on Friday.
Jul 11 2021Musgrove (5-7) took the loss in Saturday's 3-0 defeat against Colorado, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A fifth-inning error by Eric Hosmer led to a Charlie Blackmon bases-loaded single that gave the Rockies a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The veteran right-hander's losing record is belied by an impressive sub-3.00 ERA (2.93) and 116:25 K:BB, and he'll look to get back in the win column when he likely makes his first start of the season's second half at some point during next weekend's series against the Nationals.
Jul 6 2021Musgrove allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings Monday against the Nationals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove gave up all five runs over the first two innings and was able to settle in thereafter. He allowed a solo home run to Trea Turner in the first and then four runs on four hits and a walk during the second in which the Nationals were able to bat through their order. Monday's outing makes it back-to-back starts that Musgrove has allowed five runs, yet he hasn't lost either of them because of great run support. Outside of his recent struggles, the 28-year-old still has a 2.97 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 110:23 K:BB over 94 innings and will look to head into the All-Star break on a positive note when he faces the Rockies over the weekend.
Jun 30 2021Musgrove (5-6) allowed five earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three across four innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove neither pitched well nor long enough to earn the win in a traditional game, though he lucked out on both counts after the game was called in the sixth inning due to rain. He was taken yard twice in his short outing, which accounted for three of his five earned runs. While that is concerning, Musgrove has allowed multiple long balls in only four of his 16 starts this season and has limited opponents to 1.1 HR/9. Overall, he's maintained a 2.63 ERA with 106 strikeouts across 89 innings.
Jun 23 2021Musgrove got the no-decision in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks with five strikeouts across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove pitched extremely well outside of the fourth inning, when he allowed both runs and three of five total baserunners. While wins have been difficult to come by, Musgrove has gone eight straight starts allowing three runs or less and has lowered his ERA from 3.00 to 2.22 in that stretch to achieve a top-10 mark.
Jun 17 2021Musgrove allowed just four hits and three walks while striking out two over seven scoreless innings Thursday versus Cincinnati. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove and Cincinnati's Wade Miley engaged in a pitchers' duel for much of the game before the offenses came alive in the ninth inning. Despite allowing just six runs in his last 28 innings, Musgrove has not earned a win in any of his last five starts. He's maintained a 2.28 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 98:17 K:BB across 79 innings this season. The right-hander projects for his next start versus the Dodgers next week.
Jun 12 2021Musgrove (4-6) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over 6.1 innings as the Padres fell 4-1 to the Mets. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander kept San Diego in the game while delivering his fifth quality start of the season, but his offense couldn't climb out of an early hole after Musgrove served up a two-run shot to Francisco Lindor in the first inning. Musgrove will carry a 2.50 ERA and stellar 96:14 K:BB through 72 innings into his next outing.
Jun 6 2021Musgrove (4-5) lost Saturday's 4-0 game against the Mets, going five innings and allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was locked in a pitcher's duel with New York ace Jacob deGrom until allowing two fifth-inning home run and two baserunners in the sixth before being removed. The runs were the first allowed by Musgrove since May 14 -- his subpar 4-5 record masks an outstanding 2.33 ERA.
May 30 2021Musgrove pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just a hit-by-pitch while striking out three in Sunday's loss to Houston. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Blake Snell was ineffective in Sunday's game and manager Jayce Tingler didn't want to overuse a bullpen that had logged 15 innings in the last two days. Musgrove's only mistake was plunking Aledmys Diaz in the sixth inning. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.08 with a 0.76 WHIP and 79:12 K:BB across 60.2 innings this season. This relief outing is likely to be a one-off for Musgrove -- he should be able to re-enter the rotation on standard rest next weekend versus the Mets.
May 26 2021Musgrove didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-1 win over the Brewers, allowing one hit and one walk over 4.2 scoreless innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander breezed through four innings during which the only Milwaukee baserunner reached on an error, but Musgrove ran up his pitch count in the fifth and exited with the bases loaded after he issued a free pass to Corbin Burnes. Fortunately, Tim Hill kept any of the inherited runners from scoring. Musgrove will take a 2.26 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 76:12 K:BB through 55.2 innings into his next outing.
May 19 2021Musgrove (4-4) recorded 11 strikeouts and earned the win Wednesday against the Rockies after giving up two hits and zero walks across seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander totaled double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season while throwing 66 of 93 pitches for strikes, and he lasted more than five frames for the first time since April 19. Musgrove has a 2.47 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 70:11 K:BB over 51 innings this season.
May 14 2021Musgrove (3-4) won Friday's 5-4 bout with St. Louis, going five innings and allowing one run five hits and four walks with five strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was far from a clean outing for Musgrove as he allowed multiple baserunners in four of five innings and permitted a season-high four walks, but he was still able to pick up the win while allowing a single run. It was his first win since the beginning of April when he recorded a no-hitter and could be a turning point for the righty.
May 8 2021Musgrove (2-4) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Giants after giving up four runs on eight hits while fanning seven across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove has been roughed up by the Giants in each of his last two starts, allowing a combined 10 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits and two walks while fanning 13 in that stretch. The right-hander got off to an impressive start to the campaign allowing just one earned run over his first 19 innings of work, but he has been struggling of late and will try to end his woes in his next start. He's scheduled to take the ball next week at home against the Cardinals.
May 3 2021Musgrove (2-3) allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings to take the loss to the Giants ion Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove cruised through the opening two innings but ran into trouble in the third after issuing a leadoff walk and then allowing pitcher Kevin Gausman to reach on a fielding error before Tommy La Stella singled to drive in the first run of the game. Mike Tauchman stepped in next and would take Musgrove deep to right to put the Giants up 4-1. Musgrove would later surrender two more runs in the fifth before his day was over. It was the first outing of the season in which he let in more than two runs and he's also only managed 10 strikeouts over his last two starts after punching out 13 against the Brewers on April 19. He still owns a very solid 2.38 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 47:7 K:BB over 34 innings and is in line for a rematch against Gausman and the Giants later in the week.
May 2 2021Musgrove is starting Sunday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Dinelson Lamet (forearm) was said to be in the mix to start Sunday's series finale, but Musgrove will instead make his regular turn through the rotation. The 28-year-old has a 1.24 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 41:5 K:BB through 29 innings this season, though he lasted only three frames during his start versus the Dodgers last weekend.
Apr 25 2021Musgrove allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across three innings in Sunday's win over the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Dodgers were able to get to Musgrove early, forcing him to go deep into counts resulting in 77 pitches in three innings. Coming off a 13 strikeout performance in his last outing against the Brewers, Musgrove was only able to muster four punchouts on a tough Dodgers' offense. The 28-year-old's ERA raised from 1.04 to 1.55 after Sunday's performance.
Apr 20 2021Musgrove (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 13 hitters over seven innings Monday against the Brewers, though he was stuck with the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres' bats handed Musgrove an early 1-0 lead, but they went silent for the rest of the game, spoiling a magnificent outing from the right-hander. Musgrove registered a career-high 13 strikeouts but allowed a pair of solo home runs, which was enough to hand the 28-year-old his second straight loss. Musgrove is still off to a scorching start to the year, as he'll take a 1.04 ERA and 37:3 K:BB into his next scheduled start against the Dodgers on Sunday.
Apr 14 2021Musgrove (2-1) allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six batters in a loss to the Pirates on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove had started the season off with 16.1 scoreless innings before Gregory Polanco demolished a fastball over the right-field wall in the second to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Musgrove was able to pitch himself out of a leadoff double in the third and a runners-at-the-corners, no-out pickle in the fourth before getting pulled at just 81 pitches after he needed 112 in his no-hitter against the Rangers on Friday. The Padres were unable to give him run support which led to his first loss of the season, but he'll still take a 0.47 ERA into his next start at home against the Brewers on Monday.
Apr 10 2021Musgrove (2-0) no-hit the Rangers at Globe Life Field on Friday. He struck out 10 and did not issue a walk over nine scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was nearly perfect -- the lone blemish across 112 pitches was a hit batsman in the fourth inning. Musgrove was traded to his hometown team in the offseason and is already looking like a steal for San Diego after two consecutive wins to kick off the 2021 campaign, including the first no-hitter in franchise history. He's gotten the job done by relying heavily on his secondaries, and with this refined pitch mix, Musgrove could be headed for that long-awaited breakout. He lines up to face his former team in Pittsburgh next week.
Apr 4 2021Musgrove (1-0) earned the win against Arizona on Saturday, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing three hits while striking out eight. He did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was simply dominant in his first start of the campaign, yielding only a trio of harmless singles and not allowing any runners to reach second base. The right-hander tossed 57 of 78 pitches for strikes and induced 14 swings-and-misses in the outing. Musgrove's next start will take place Friday at Texas.
Mar 29 2021Musgrove tossed five scoreless and hitless innings against Cleveland in Sunday's Cactus League contest, allowing two walks and striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander finished his spring slate with a flourish, and he worked up to 70 pitches in the exhibition tune-up. Musgrove concludes Cactus League play with a 3.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 17:7 K:BB over 18 innings. He's set to fill the No. 4 slot in the Padres' starting rotation this season.
Mar 16 2021Musgrove hurled four innings in a Cactus League contest versus the White Sox on Tuesday, allowing three unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first batter Musgrove faced reached base on an error, which set the tone for the remainder of the right-hander's appearance. San Diego committed three more errors behind Musgrove, leading to three unearned runs. The 28-year-old was also struck in the shoulder by a comebacker in the second inning, though he stayed in the game and appeared unscathed. Musgrove has a 2.00 ERA and 6:3 K:BB through nine innings this spring.
Mar 11 2021Musgrove pitched three innings in Thursday's Cactus League contest versus Cleveland, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove pitched a pair of perfect frames in his Padres spring debut last week, but he was less effective his second time out. The right-hander gave up a pair of run-scoring doubles Thursday, though he was efficient in needing only 36 pitches to make it through three innings. Musgrove should have a few more chances to fine tune his arsenal this spring before settling into a spot near the middle of the Padres' regular-season rotation.
Mar 5 2021Musgrove tossed two perfect innings and struck out one batter during Friday's Cactus League contest versus San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his exhibition debut with his hometown team, Musgrove needed only 18 pitches to make quick work of six batters. The right-hander is slotted to fill a back-end spot in a Padres rotation that, on paper, looks to be among the best in the league heading into the season.
Jan 18 2021Musgrove was sent from the Pirates to the Padres as part of a three-team deal which sent Joey Lucchesi to the Mets and a package of prospects to the Pirates, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres evidently believe there's no such thing as too much pitching, as they've now added Musgrove, Blake Snell and Yu Darvish all in the same offseason. Musgrove may not be quite at the level of that pair, but he's coming off a strong season which saw him strike out 33.1 percent of opposing batters, smashing his previous career high of 21.9 percent, en route to a 3.86 ERA. He should see far more chances for wins for the rapidly improving Padres than he would have seen in Pittsburgh.
Jan 15 2021Musgrove agreed to a one-year, $4.45 million contract with the Pirates on Friday, avoiding arbitration. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Pirates' potential Opening Day starter heading into his age-28 season, Musgrove logged a 3.86 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 55:16 K:BB in 39.2 innings last season. His strikeout rate jumped from 21.9 percent in 2019 to 33.1 percent in 2020, and if those gains hold even a little, he could be in for a career year.
Sep 26 2020Musgrove (1-5) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out 10 in Saturday's win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was able to avoid a goose egg in the win column for 2020, turning in a spectacular final start of the season and retiring the last 13 batters he faced. He ended the season with a 3.86 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 55:16 K:BB.
Sep 20 2020Musgrove tossed six scoreless innings in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out 11. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outing was by far Musgrove's best of the season. His 11 strikeouts brought his K:BB to 45:15 and the six scoreless frames lowered his ERA to 4.68 on the campaign. He was in line to pick up his first win when he exited with the Pirates leading 1-0, but had to settle for a no-decision after Yadier Molina's homer off Derek Holland gave St. Louis the lead. The 27-year-old will have one more chance to get a victory when he toes the rubber Saturday in Cleveland.
Sep 15 2020Musgrove (0-5) took the loss Tuesday in Cincinnati after allowing four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old ran into most of his trouble during the first inning as he loaded the bases before recording an out, and the Reds pushed across three runs via a hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly and a single. Musgrove has a 5.74 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 34:14 K:BB across 26.2 innings and is on track to face the Cardinals on Sunday.
Sep 8 2020Musgrove allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five across four scoreless innings Tuesday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was in control throughout his start, as he allowed only one extra-base hit. He also racked up nine swinging strikes on 64 total pitches. The only downside to the start was that it appears the Pirates will be careful with his workload after missing nearly a month with a triceps injury. In a pair of outings since returning, Musgrove has allowed two earned runs across seven innings while punching out nine and walking none. He'll take his next turn through the rotation Monday at Cincinnati.
Sep 2 2020Musgrove (0-4) allowed two earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out four across three innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was making his first start since Aug. 4, and was limited to just 46 pitches. He fared well through three innings, racking up four strikeouts while also generating five ground ball outs. Musgrove came back out to start the fifth inning but surrendered a single and double prior to being yanked. Nick Tropeano came in and promptly surrendered a three-run homer, charging Musgrove with two earned runs in the process. Musgrove will look to build on this effort in his next outing, currently projected to come Tuesday against the White Sox.
Sep 1 2020Musgrove (triceps) will be activated off the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Cubs, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old advanced to throwing simulated games at the alternate training site last week and is now ready to rejoin the Pirates after spending three weeks on the injured list. Musgrove only pitched a few innings in the sim game and is unlikely to be fully stretched out Wednesday, so he may have a tough time reaching the necessary five innings to qualify for a victory.
Aug 26 2020Musgrove (triceps) will throw a simulated game at the alternate site later this week, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will throw two simulated innings at some point in the next couple days in Altoona. This will mark another important checkpoint for Musgrove, who had already been throwing bullpen sessions. It is unclear when he will return to the rotation, but considering he will only throw a couple simulated innings, it seems likely he will throw at least one more simulated game before returning to the big-league rotation.
Aug 23 2020Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Musgrove (triceps) is slated to throw a bullpen session Monday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove threw off a mound earlier during the Pirates' homestand, so he'll presumably increase his pitch count and/or the intensity of his side session Monday. Since Musgrove will likely need to face hitters in live batting practice or a simulated game before the Pirates activate him from the injured list, he may not be on track to re-enter the Pittsburgh rotation until next week.
Aug 19 2020Musgrove (triceps) is making good progress and is expected to throw off a mound soon, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove hasn't pitched in over two weeks, first with a sore ankle and then with triceps inflammation. While the latest reports about his progress are quite positive, it remains unclear exactly when he'll return from the injured list.
Aug 13 2020Musgrove (triceps) is expected to play catch over the weekend, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty missed a start due to an ankle injury before heading to the IL with inflammation in his right triceps. Musgrove struggled in three starts prior to getting hurt, compiling a 6.75 ERA with 11 walks in 14.2 innings. The Pirates will likely have a better idea of where Musgrove stands after he throws in the coming days.
Aug 11 2020Musgrove was placed on the 10-day injured list with right triceps inflammation Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a sore ankle that caused Musgrove to be scratched from his previous start, but he'll now hit the injured list with an entirely different injury. It's not yet clear how much time he's expected to miss, but a triceps issue is presumably a far greater worry for a pitcher than a sore ankle would be. Trevor Williams will take what would have been Musgrove's scheduled start Thursday against Cincinnati.
Aug 8 2020Musgrove was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday against the Tigers with a sore ankle, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The severity of the issue is not yet clear, but it will cost Musgrove at least one start. Steven Brault will take the hill in his place. Musgrove struggled in his previous start Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings while walking five batters, though it's unknown whether or not he was battling the issue at that time.
Aug 4 2020Musgrove (0-3) took the loss Tuesday in Minnesota after allowing five runs on six hits across 3.1 innings. He had two strikeouts and five walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was solid in his first two starts of the season with three runs allowed over 5.2 innings both times out, but he didn't find much success against the Twins. Walks have been a significant issue so far for Musgrove, as he's issued 11 free passes through 14.2 innings, and the five walks Tuesday tied a single-game career high. The right-hander will have a more favorable matchup next time on the mound Sunday versus the Tigers.
Jul 30 2020Musgrove (0-1) gave up three earned runs on four hits (including two homers) and three walks in 5.2 innings Wednesday. He struck out eight in a 3-0 loss to Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's been tagged for four home runs in two starts after yielding 21 homers in 32 games last season. The righty has also walked three batters in both starts, something he did only three times in 2019. Still, he's pitched well but as the team's designated No. 1 starter, he's faced tough opposing starters in Jack Flaherty and Brandon Woodruff.
Jul 24 2020Musgrove allowed three earned runs in 5.2 innings Friday. He gave up five hits and three walks while striking out seven St. Louis batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty, who threw 99 pitches (61 for strikes), was hurt by a pair of leadoff home runs. Interestingly, manager Derek Shelton said during his post-game media conference on AT&T SportsNet that he removed Musgrove because he was tiring, not because of his pitch count.
Jul 17 2020Musgrove was named the Pirates' Opening Day starter by manager Derek Shelton on Friday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The announcement is hardly a surprise, but the right-hander is now officially set to face the Cardinals in the season opener next Friday. Musgrove had a 4.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 157:39 K:BB over 170.1 innings last year, though he had a strong finish with a 3.74 ERA across his final eight starts.
Jul 14 2020Musgrove struck out seven batters in five innings during Monday's summer camp intrasquad game, allowing a first-inning homer to Josh Bell, Adam Berry of MLB.com.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team's likely Opening Day starter mixed his pitches to keep hitters off balance. "One thing that really stood out to me was his ability to use all his pitches," manager Derek Shelton noted. "His feel on his pitches tonight was about as close to being ready for the season, I think, as you can see out of a guy." Musgrove pitched well in his final eight starts of 2019, compiling a 3.74 ERA before going on the IL with an abdominal injury that led to offseason surgery.
Mar 6 2020Musgrove (shoulder) pitched poorly Friday but apparently made it through his outing without encountering any additional injury issues, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove felt a pinching in his right shoulder following his previous outing. The righty surrendered seven earned runs (including two homers) while recording just two outs Friday. The wind was blowing out, however, in a game which featured 11 home runs. "My execution wasn't very good," Musgrove said. "It's good to get stuff like this out of the way in spring. I felt good today, but the execution wasn't there." After throwing 37 pitches against the Blue Jays, he threw an additional pair of simulated innings to get his work in.
Mar 5 2020Musgrove (shoulder) is slated to pitch in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove admitted after his second outing of the spring over the weekend that he's been feeling some discomfort in his right shoulder, but the issue doesn't look like it'll result in his pitching schedule being altered at all. Though he won't start Friday, Musgrove is on track to cover at least an inning or two behind Chris Archer (neck).
Mar 1 2020Musgrove, who has been bothered by "pinching" in his right shoulder this spring, gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in three innings against Toronto on Sunday. He struck out a pair of batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The righty has been concerned with the injury because the discomfort has lingered. While the issue cleared up Sunday, it will be interesting to see if he continues to make his regularly scheduled outings the rest of spring training. The Pirates are counting on him to serve at the top of their rotation.
Feb 26 2020Musgrove hurled two hitless innings in his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday. He plunked one batter while striking one out, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He threw 18 of 25 pitches for strikes and went to his curveball with increased frequency. Musgrove, who threw his curve at a nine percent clip in 2019, would like to increase his usage by as much as 10 percent. Since his high fastball travels the same trajectory a good portion of the way to the plate, the curve would help to keep hitters off-balance. The righty is set to serve at the top of Pittsburgh's rotation, along with Chris Archer.
Jan 10 2020Musgrove agreed to a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the Pirates, avoiding arbitration, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is his first of three years as an arbitration-eligible player. Despite his modest salary, Musgrove enters the year as one of the rebuilding Pirates' most established players.
Sep 26 2019Musgrove (11-12) got the win against the Cubs on Thursday, giving up three earned runs on three hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking two as the Pirates won 9-5. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been an uneven campaign for Musgrove on the whole, but he's closed it off on a strong note. Coming off this outing, he's now reached the five-inning threshold without allowing more than three earned runs in seven out of his last eight starts dating back to Aug. 10. He'll need to be more consistent going forward to establish himself as a reliable fantasy contributor, but hopefully he can build on the strong finish heading into next season. The right-hander closes the 2019 campaign with a 4.44 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 157:39 K:BB across 170.1 innings.
Sep 19 2019Musgrove allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings Thursday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All four runs crossed the plate against Musgrove in an error-fueled second inning. However, he settled in from there, allowing only two base knocks in his final three innings of work. Although he's been inconsistent throughout the season, Musgrove has allowed only seven earned runs across his last 22 innings. Still he's maintained a 4.49 ERA due to several blowup outings since the All-Star break, most notable of which was an eight earned run implosion on Aug. 4 against the Mets. He'll look to end the season strong in his final start, currently slated for Thursday against the Cubs.
Sep 12 2019Musgrove (10-12) picked up the win after giving up four hits while striking out seven over five scoreless innings Thursday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove allowed just four batters to reach base on the day, and he was pulled after five strong innings with 72 pitches (50 strikes). The right-hander has now earned back-to-back victories, allowing three runs while fanning 12 over 11 innings of work. He'll head into his next start with a 4.52 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 143:35 K:BB over 59.1 frames this season.
Sep 10 2019Musgrove (foot) is tentatively scheduled to start Thursday's game at San Francisco, Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was scratched from Friday's scheduled start with right foot discomfort, and he'll take at least one additional day before returning to the starting rotation. Dario Agrazal will take the mound Wednesday, while Alex McRae is waiting to serve as a spot starter Thursday should Musgrove be unable to pitch.
Sep 6 2019Musgrove was scratched from Friday's start against the Cardinals with right foot discomfort, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Musgrove was scheduled for his 30th outing of the season but is now considered day-to-day with the foot injury. Alex McRae will step up and serve as the spot starter for Pittsburgh.
Sep 1 2019Musgrove (9-12) picked up the win in Saturday's 11-4 victory over the Rockies, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five.
Aug 26 2019Musgrove allowed two runs on five hits over six innings Monday, striking out six batters in the loss to Philadelphia. He did not factor in the decision.
Aug 21 2019Musgrove (8-12) took the loss in Wednesday's 11-1 rout at the hands of the Nationals, coughing up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over five innings
Aug 16 2019Musgrove struck out nine while allowing two runs on four hits with no walks across 7.1 innings during a no-decision against the Cubs on Friday.
Aug 10 2019Musgrove (8-11) allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts across 5.1 innings while taking a loss against the Cardinals on Saturday.
Aug 8 2019Musgrove (back) has been cleared to start Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
Aug 5 2019Musgrove pitched through back stiffness during Sunday's outing against the Mets, 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh reports.
Aug 4 2019Musgrove (8-10) gave up eight runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out five through 3.1 innings to take the loss against the Mets on Sunday.

Jul 25 2018Musgrove (4-4) allowed two runs on five hits and one walk across seven innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Indians. He struck out two.Musgrove rose to the occasion in a difficult matchup as he allowed just a run on two hits in the first inning before conceding a solo home run to Edwin Encarnacion in the fourth. He fired in an impressive 74 percent of his pitches for strikes and induced 12 groundball outs to help his cause. Musgrove was knocked around for five runs in his previous start, but this solid outing brings his ERA back to a respectable 3.90 for the season. He'll look to build off this performance this weekend against the Mets.
Jul 15 2018Musgrove allowed five runs on seven hits and four walks across 7.2 innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Brewers. He struck out five.Though he walked four batters for just the second time this season, Musgrove pitched well and allowed just two runs through the first seven innings. He ran into some trouble in the eighth, however, and wound up allowing a three-run triple to Brett Phillips before he was pulled with two outs. The big hit really tarnished what was shaping up to be an excellent outing for Musgrove, who will instead see his ERA rise to 4.08. He had allowed just two earned runs with a 14:3 K:BB in 12 total innings over his previous two starts and will look to get back on track after the All-Star break.
Jul 10 2018Musgrove (3-4) took the loss against the Nationals on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits across five innings. He recorded nine strikeouts and walked one.Musgrove gave up a two-run home run to Anthony Rendon in the fifth inning but otherwise kept Washington in check, but unfortunately that was enough to saddle him with the loss in his return from the disabled list. The 25-year-old has a 3.77 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 45.1 innings this season, and is slated to finish the first half Sunday against the Brewers.
Jul 10 2018Musgrove (finger) was activated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Tuesday's start against the Nationals.Musgrove will end up having missed just the minimum amount of time with a finger infection. He'll take the hill opposite Jeremy Hellickson. Alex McRae was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move.
Jul 8 2018Musgrove (finger) relayed that he would return from the 10-day disabled list to start Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "I'm good to go," Musgrove said after completing a bullpen session Sunday.Pirates manager Clint Hurdle essentially validated Musgrove's comments, saying that the right-hander would be a "TBA" for Tuesday's game, but only as a technicality since he's coming off the DL. Since Musgrove last pitched June 29 against the Padres, he'll rejoin the Pirates in the minimum 10 days and likely won't face any restrictions with his pitch count as a result. Clay Holmes made a spot start in Musgrove's stead July 4 versus the Dodgers and was demoted to Triple-A Indianapolis two days later.
Jul 8 2018Musgrove (finger) is expected come off the disabled list and start Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Musgrove landed on the disabled list in late June with a finger infection, and would miss the spend the minimum 10-days on the shelf if able to return Tuesday. The 25-year-old is coming off one of his best starts of the season as he tossed seven scoreless innings against the Padres on June 29.
Jul 4 2018Musgrove said that he's hopeful to miss only one start due to the right index finger infection that resulted in his placement on the disabled list Tuesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The Pirates will hand Clay Holmes the start in Wednesday's series finale against the Dodgers in Musgrove's stead after the infection resulted in swelling that made it painful for the latter to play catch. It's a disappointing setback for Musgrove after he submitted one of his best starts of the season his last time out June 29 against the Padres, during which he tossed seven shutout innings and struck out five. The Pirates will likely wait and see how Musgrove responds to antibiotic treatment over the next few days before determining if he can realistically take the hill for his next turn through the rotation, which would come July 10 against the Nationals.
Jul 3 2018Musgrove was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a right index finger infection. The move is retroactive to June 30, meaning Musgrove will be eligible to return July 10 against the Nationals if he's healthy. The 25-year-old fired seven scoreless innings during Friday's start against the Padres, and the severity of the infection remains unclear. The Pirates have yet to announce who is replacing Musgrove as Wednesday's starting pitcher.
Jun 30 2018Musgrove (3-3) picked up the win against the Padres on Friday, scattering seven hits over seven shutout innings, striking out five and walking two in Pittsburgh's 6-3 victory.Musgrove had been roughed up in each of his last two outings, but he was able to bounce back with this sterling effort against San Diego. Aside from those two rough starts, Musgrove has been solid in each of his other five outings since making his season debut on May 25, and he now sports a 3.79 ERA and 36 strikeouts through 40.1 innings. He'll take the mound next in a road matchup against the Dodgers on July 4.
Jun 23 2018Musgrove (2-3) took the loss Saturday as the Pirates fell 7-2 to the Diamondbacks, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings while striking out two. After two brilliant May starts to begin his season once he came off the disabled list, Musgrove has had a rough go of things in June, limping to a 7.45 ERA in his last four outings. His 19:5 K:BB in 19.1 innings over that stretch does offer some encouragement, however, and he'll be in a good spot to rebound when he next takes the mound Friday in San Diego.
Jun 18 2018Musgrove (2-2) allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk across 4.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Reds. He struck out six.Musgrove didn't allow a baserunner through the first two frames, but he allowed two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings before an early removal. It was comfortably the worst start of the season for Musgrove, who allowed season highs for hits and runs in what was his shortest outing to date. He did limit the walks to great effect once again, however, and now has a sparkling 17:2 K:BB over his last three starts. The right-hander still has a respectable 3.68 ERA heading into Friday's matchup with the Diamondbacks.
Jun 11 2018Musgrove allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out six through six innings in a no-decision Monday against Arizona.Musgrove was efficient, as he needed just 88 pitches to get through six innings, but he was let down by his bullpen, which allowed six runs in the final three frames. His off-speed pitches, a changeup and a slider, were brilliant, as they induced 10 swinging strikes on just 29 offerings. When he has those weapons to pair with a 94.6 mph average fastball, Musgrove is extremely tough to hit. He'll take a 2.16 ERA into his second start of the week, a home date Sunday with the Reds.
Jun 11 2018Musgrove, who was skipped Sunday as the Pirates watch his workload, is expected to make two starts in the coming week. The righty threw a combined 123 innings in 2017 (including the postseason) and the team is being extra cautious with the 25-year-old's balky right shoulder. He'll face the Diamondbacks in Arizona on Monday and then start against the Reds in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Musgrove's thrown much better at home (3.28 ERA) than on the road (5.94 ERA) in his fledging career. Arizona could present a tough matchup Monday as it totaled 29 runs in three games at Colorado over the weekend. Musgrove has pitched just 1.1 innings against the Diamondbacks and has never seen Cincinnati.
Jun 9 2018Musgrove will start Monday's game against the Diamondbacks instead of facing the Cubs on Sunday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.Ivan Nova (finger) will return from the disabled list Sunday, providing Musgrove an additional day of rest. The change in matchup is likely a welcome sight, as the Cubs rank third in the league with 5.13 runs per game, while the Diamondbacks rank 23rd at 4.02 runs.
Jun 5 2018Musgrove (2-1) earned his first loss of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings against the Dodgers on Tuesday. He walked one and recorded five strikeouts.Musgrove had not allowed a home run in his first two starts, but allowed a two-run home run to Joc Pederson and a solo shot to Yasiel Puig to account for his earned runs Tuesday. The 25-year-old has a 1.89 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 19 innings, and his next matchup will come against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
May 30 2018Musgrove (2-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over the Cubs, allowing one run on seven hits and four walks over seven innings while striking out five. While the right-hander wasn't quite as impressive as he was in his season debut, Musgrove quickly settled down after a rocky start to his night that saw him give up a run before he recorded an out, and then escape a bases-loaded jam with one gone in the first inning. Musgrove threw 65 of 100 pitches for strikes, and his 0.64 ERA will be put to the test when he faces the Dodgers at home in his next outing.
May 25 2018Musgrove (1-0) got the win against the Cardinals on Friday, scattering just five hits over seven shut-out innings, striking out seven with no walks in an 8-1 victory for the Pirates. In his first start of the season coming off the disabled list, Musgrove (shoulder) looked dominant against the Cardinals in picking up the victory. The most impressive aspect of this start was his efficiency, as Musgrove needed just 67 pitches - firing 50 of them for strikes - to make it through seven innings without issuing a single free pass. It was certainly a positive way to start off his campaign, and while his 4.52 ERA over 171.1 career innings prior to this year would seem to indicate this won't be an every-start occurrence, Musgrove would instantly find himself in the fantasy conversation if this does turn out to be a sign of things to come.
May 20 2018Musgrove (shoulder) is tentatively scheduled to start Friday against the Cardinals, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.Musgrove was knocked around in his most recent rehab outing with Triple-A Indianapolis, allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings. However, that was apparently not enough to cause the Pirates to deviate from their plan as Musgrove is still scheduled to make his Pittsburgh debut this week. Nick Kingham was optioned to Indianapolis on Sunday.
May 19 2018Musgrove (shoulder) said he will start Thursday against the Reds in Cincinnati, Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Musgrove may be jumping the gun with that news, as the team hasn't confirmed his return, although manager Clint Hurdle said a return is "possible" this coming week. The big right-hander made his fourth rehabilitation start Friday, throwing five innings and 96 pitches for Triple-A Indianapolis. That's enough pitches where Hurdle could feel comfortable putting Musgrove on the mound against major-league pitching.
May 15 2018Musgrove (shoulder) is scheduled to make one more rehab start Friday, before joining the Pirates' rotation, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.Berry notes that this would put Musgrove in line for a May 23 debut in Cincinnati, should all go well. The 25-year-old threw 79 pitches (60 for strikes) in his rehab start Saturday, but general manager Neal Huntington wants to see him stretched out to 100 pitches before he makes his first major-league appearance of 2018. Musgrove had 98 strikeouts and only 28 walks across 109.1 innings with the Astros in 2017, and he should immediately become a member of Pittsburgh's starting rotation upon his return.
May 14 2018Despite throwing 5.2 shutout innings for Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Musgrove (shoulder) will need one more minor-league start before making his season debut for Pittsburgh, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.General manager Neal Huntington wants Musgrove stretched out to 100 pitches before pitching for the Pirates. He threw 79 pitches (60 for strikes) Saturday, retiring 17 of 18 batters without allowing a hit. "I finally felt all of the pieces come together with the delivery and the release point and everything. I'd say tonight (Saturday's game) was the best I've felt." Barring another setback, the 25-year-old could debut in Cincinnati during the May 22-24 series.
May 9 2018Musgrove (shoulder) is expected to make a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Indianapolis this weekend. He needed only 34 pitches to complete four innings of one-run ball for Double-A Altoona on Monday. Because of his efficiency, he threw an additional bullpen following his appearance for the Curve. Musgrove is tentatively set to start two Triple-A games before making his season debut for Pittsburgh, but he'll need to make it through both games without pain.
May 6 2018Musgrove (shoulder) had his scheduled rehab start pushed back to Monday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports. It's unclear if poor weather resulted in the decision, as rain is expected in the Sunday forecast for Altoona, PA. The team has taken their time with Musgrove up to this point, so there's no need to start rushing now, especially if conditions are not ideal. Musgrove will instead start the first of what's expected to be a multi-game rehab stint Monday.
May 2 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will make his next rehab start Sunday with Double-A Altoona, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.Musgrove got through his first rehab appearance Tuesday without issue, tossing 36 pitches in the game and 15 additional offerings in a bullpen session. He still seems to be a few starts away from a full return to the Pittsburgh rotation, but the progress is encouraging nonetheless.
Apr 28 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will join High-A Bradenton for a rehab assignment Tuesday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.Musgrove has yet to make his Pirates debut while battling a shoulder injury. He'll start out by throwing just three innings and is expected to make four starts while ramping up to a full starter's workload. Assuming each start comes on four days' rest, he'd be lined up to start for the Pirates on May 22 in Cincinnati.
Apr 25 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will throw a simulated game Wednesday, and then embark on a multi-outing rehab assignment if all goes as scheduled, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.Musgrove recently tossed a couple bullpen sessions this past week and continues to target a return to the major-league mound around early-to-mid May. The 25-year-old has been sidelined since the end of March with shoulder discomfort.
Apr 22 2018Provided he feels fine Monday following Sunday's bullpen session, Musgrove (shoulder) will throw a simulated game during the coming week, general manager Neal Huntington said Sunday.Speaking on his weekly radio show, Huntington said he's looking for Musgrove to slot back into the starting rotation when he comes off the disabled list. As a result, it looks as though fantasy owners won't see the right-hander make his 2018 debut until Week 6, at the earliest.
Apr 20 2018Musgrove (shoulder) successfully completed one bullpen session Thursday and is expected to throw another one Sunday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The Pirates are anxious to unveil one of the key trade pieces they received in exchange for Gerrit Cole, but first want to make sure he's healthy. Musgrove could go on a short rehab stint -- provided Sunday's bullpen session goes well -- putting a timetable for his return in early May.
Apr 17 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will throw three bullpen sessions before heading out on a rehab assignment, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports. The right-hander is expected to throw 25-30 fastballs in his next bullpen session Thursday. Musgrove still needs to be built back up to a starter's workload, so it seems like he won't be back in the Pirates' rotation until late May or early June.
Apr 15 2018Musgrove (shoulder) is expected to throw off a slope Tuesday and throw a bullpen session Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "I feel really good," Musgrove said.He said he has not had any setbacks since he started his throwing program, but there is still a fairly long road to go before he could join the big-league rotation. Musgrove would have to eventually go on what could be a three- or four-week rehab assignment in the minor leagues, so a return in late May or early June seems like the best-case scenario.
Apr 11 2018The Pirates still have no timetable for when Musgrove (shoulder) might begin throwing off a mound, Rob Biertempfel of the Athletic Pittsburgh reports.Musgrove's injury is related to the one which forced him to the DL for a short stint in 2017. Given the team's caution with the right-hander, it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to action after April. Pittsburgh still intends to deploy him as a starter, but there's a chance he could slide into a relief role, where his arm would see less stress.
Apr 10 2018Musgrove (shoulder) is throwing off a slope and playing catch from 80 feet, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.Musgrove battled shoulder discomfort throughout camp and was shut down from throwing soon after the start of the season. He's still a while away from returning, but he's at least been able to resume his throwing program. It's unclear exactly when he's expected back, but he'll need at least a few long bullpen sessions and some rehab appearances before he's ready to go.
Apr 9 2018Musgrove (shoulder) is not close to returning from the disabled list, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Musgrove was dealing with shoulder discomfort for the entirety of spring training. He appeared close to a return near the end of March, having made appearances in the Grapefruit League and in minor-league spring training. He made the Opening Day roster only to be shut down from throwing entirely right before his first start. He remains shut down and will need multiple rehab appearances before he's back with the big-league club. Steven Brault will stay in the rotation while Musgrove is out.
Apr 2 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing for the next 5-7 days, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.Musgrove reported the shoulder issue prior to his scheduled side session Monday, prompting the Pirates to shut him down and send him to the disabled list. The 25-year-old, who was slowed b a shoulder injury throughout spring training, was on the cusp of making his season debut before suffering the setback -- tossing 92 pitches in a minor-league game over the weekend. Steven Brault will now start in his place Thursday against the Reds, and Brault will likely stick in the rotation until Musgrove is healthy. Given Musgrove won't resume throwing until later in the week, he'll need more than the minimum stay on the disabled list.
Apr 2 2018Musgrove (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to March 30, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. It appears Musgrove isn't quite past the shoulder injury that slowed him throughout spring training. This is somewhat surprising, as the 25-year-old was expected to make his season debut Thursday against the Reds after tossing 92 pitches in a minor-league game over the weekend. It's unclear if he suffered a setback or if the Pirates are simply giving him some extra time to recover. Expect an updated timetable for his return to emerge in the coming days. In the meantime, Tyler Glasnow or Steven Brault will now likely step in to start for the Pirates on Thursday. Musgrove won't be eligible to return until April 9, so his Pirates debut will at least have to wait until next week.
Apr 1 2018Musgrove will make his Pirates debut Thursday against the Reds, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.Musgrove had been vying for a rotation spot to open the season, but a shoulder injury throughout camp halted those efforts a bit. He tossed a clean outing in a minor-league contest Saturday, however, so the Pirates will bring him up to pitch in the majors on regular rest. Considering he threw 92 pitches Saturday, the right-hander should be on few, if any, limitations.
Mar 31 2018Musgrove threw six innings in a minor-league game Saturday with no issues, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Musgrove is slightly behind schedule after dealing with a shoulder injury early in camp, but he appears to be on the cusp of a return. The right-hander got up to 92 pitches in Saturday's outing and reported feeling fine afterwards, essentially clearing the way for him to make his 2018 big-league debut. The Pirates haven't confirmed Musgrove's next step, but he's currently lined up to start against the Reds on Thursday.
Mar 30 2018Musgrove will throw a minor-league start Saturday, Elizabeth Bloom of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Musgrove battled a shoulder injury throughout camp, though he made the Pirates' Opening Day roster. He'll throw against minor leaguers on Sunday before making his first major-league start sometime during the Pirates' series against the Reds, which begins on April 5. That would mean Musgrove would miss his first turn in the rotation, but barring setbacks shouldn't need to miss any more than that.
Mar 26 2018Musgrove is on course to open the regular season in Pittsburgh's rotation after limiting Toronto to one run in five innings Sunday, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.Musgrove, who made only three spring starts because of right shoulder discomfort, faces one final test -- he's expected to pitch six innings Saturday against minor leaguers. Provided he suffers no setbacks with his shoulder in that outing, he could debut April 8 at home against Cincinnati. "Considering the circumstances, how it's gone for me and how it was scheduled out, yeah, this is where I want to be," Musgrove noted. "For the most part, I think I'm in a good spot right now."
Mar 21 2018Musgrove struggled in his Tuesday start, allowing six runs on eight hits in four innings. He's pitched in only two games (6.2 innings) due to a cranky shoulder, and while he's expected to make two more starts before breaking camp, Pittsburgh doesn't need a fifth starter until April 8. "We're looking forward to him making a large number of starts for us this year," general manager Neal Huntington said. "Which start he gets is something we're working through at this point." As a result, it's possible Musgrove starts the season on the disabled list, freeing up a roster spot for another pitcher or bench player.
Mar 20 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will start Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox, Elizabeth Bloom of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Musgrove said he experienced some stiffness in his right shoulder coming out of his first start of the spring last week against the Yankees, but it won't be anything that delays his schedule as he attempts to solidify a spot in the Opening Day rotation. The right-hander covered 54 pitches in 2.2 innings during his previous turn, so it's expected that he'll approach the 75-pitch mark in what will likely be his penultimate start of the spring.
Mar 15 2018Musgrove, who pitched 2.2 innings Thursday, felt some arm stiffness against the Yankees, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. The righty is expected to pitch in two addition Grapefruit League games before breaking camp, but that could change if he doesn't feel healthy. "Making the Opening Day roster is important for me, especially being on a new team," he said. "I want to be there for the guys, but my health throughout the year is more important to me than being there for Opening Day. If things continue to progress like they have, there's a good chance I'll be there." As a result, fantasy owners will need to wait a bit longer before deciding whether to potentially activate Musgrove for Week 1.
Mar 15 2018Musgrove (shoulder) completed 2.2 innings in his first Grapefruit League appearance of 2018.The right-hander wound up throwing 54 pitches in the outing, fanning five and walking three. Reports say that Musgrove was able to touch 93 miles per hour in his debut, which is consistent with his career averages. It's still unclear if he'll be ready for starting duties by the start of the regular season, but this appearance makes it seem as if his shoulder woes are behind him at this point.
Mar 10 2018Musgrove (shoulder) will take the mound for three innings against the Yankees on Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.Musgrove was able to throw 31 pitches over two innings of an intrasquad game against minor-leaguers Friday and said that everything went well without any issues. His status for the beginning of the regular season remains a little uncertain, but more should be known regarding his status following Thursday's outing.
Mar 9 2018Musgrove (shoulder) threw 31 pitches in two innings of an intrasquad game at Pirate City on Friday. "Joe got off the mound in good form," manager Clint Hurdle told DK Pittsburgh Sports. "We'll see how he feels Saturday, but I think he's on his way now."Because Musgrove has yet to pitch in the Grapefruit League, Pittsburgh's challenge will be to get him stretched out prior to Opening Day. The team would like to start him during the first homestand sometime between April 1-8.
Mar 7 2018Musgrove (shoulder), who threw live batting practice Monday, is expected to pitch three innings against minor leaguers Friday, Rob Biertempfel of the Athletic reports. The righty isn't expected to travel to Detroit for an opening series, two-game set in late March, but he's hoping to pitch during Pittsburgh's first homestand. "I don't think there is anything that will hold me back," Musgrove said. "Unless something pops up in the next couple of weeks, I feel like I'll be ready to break with the team." Depending on his progression over the next couple weeks, it might be wise to temper Musgrove's early-season expectations. At the very least, his health will determine whether Steven Brault or Tyler Glasnow start in the rotation or bullpen.
Mar 6 2018Musgrove (shoulder) faced live hitters for the first time this spring Monday, Jim Colony of 93.7 The Fan reports.Musgrove has been limited in spring training thus far due to discomfort in his right shoulder, but it seems like he's continuing to make progress in his recovery. The former Astro commented that he didn't throw many breaking balls, focusing more on fastball command during the session. He expects to make a few appearances in minor-league games before making his Pirates spring debut in about a week and a half. Musgrove insists that this will keep him on pace to be 100 percent for the regular season if he's asked to start, but the situation should play itself out over the rest of the month.
Feb 28 2018Director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk said Musgrove (shoulder) is "trending upward" and expected to throw batting practice in the coming days, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. After missing time early in spring training, Musgrove has thrown a pair of bullpen sessions over the last four days. In fact, he stated that he could pitch now if it was the regular season. The righty spent time on the disabled list in 2017 with a shoulder injury, so the Bucs are being extra careful with him. He's expected to compete for a spot in the starting rotation.
Feb 27 2018Musgrove (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen Tuesday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.Musgrove continues to work his way back from a minor shoulder injury he suffered earlier in the month of February. This marks his second bullpen session in the past three days, and assuming he feels no ill effects Wednesday, the 25-year-old could progress to facing live hitters in the near future before ultimately making his Grapefruit League debut. Musgrove's status for Opening Day should clear up as he continues to ramp up his activity.
Feb 26 2018Musgrove (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday without issues, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.Musgrove suffered a minor shoulder injury (described as "shoulder discomfort") earlier in February. He was delayed to start camp but seems to be recovering fine. He'll throw again on Tuesday. It appears likely that he'll be ready to go by the start of the season, though he did battle shoulder discomfort last year as well, so it's possible that this will be an ongoing issue.
Feb 21 2018Musgrove (shoulder) did not participate in a bullpen session Wednesday but will attempt to play catch Thursday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.Musgrove has been dealing with right shoulder discomfort in recent days. The 25-year-old appears to be taking it easy with Opening Day still more than a month away, especially considering he missed time with a similar ailment last June. Expect a better sense of his status in the coming days once he's able to resume activities.
Feb 19 2018Musgrove skipped a scheduled bullpen session Sunday due to right shoulder discomfort, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Shoulder discomfort forced Musgrove to the disabled list for a 15-day stint last season. The righthander was acquired in the Gerrit Cole trade and is expected to compete for a spot in the starting rotation. Tyler Glasnow and Steven Brault would likely vie for the fifth starter's spot if Musgrove is forced to the DL.
Feb 14 2018Musgrove will be worked out as a starter in spring training, Liz Bloom of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Although it was expected that Musgrove would be in line to enter the Pirates' rotation in 2018, manager Clint Hurdle's confirmation is yet another sign that the 25-year-old will be a starter instead of setting up in the bullpen. Obviously, if Musgrove doesn't seem to find a niche in the rotation, he will be a vital relief arm for the club, but he has the makings of a mid-rotation arm at this point in time. Over 109.1 innings of work with Houston last year, he posted a 4.77 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 15 starts and 23 relief appearances.
Jan 13 2018Musgrove was traded to the Pirates along with Colin Moran and two undisclosed prospects in exchange for Gerrit Cole, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reports.Just as Musgrove was becoming a trendy reliever to target late in drafts, he switches organizations and will likely return to being a starting pitcher. Musgrove has a career 5.37 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 114 strikeouts in 135.2 MLB innings as a starter, but he has looked like a potential mid-rotation arm at times in the majors and high minors. If he is unable to find success in Pittsburgh as a starter, he has already established that he can be a dominant reliever (1.26 ERA in 35.2 innings), so the Pirates have a nice fallback option. His fantasy appeal for 2018 should increase slightly, but he already had an ADP of 440.5 in NFBC leagues as a reliever.
Sep 21 2017Musgrove allowed two hits and struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his second save in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the White Sox.Closer Ken Giles was unavailable after tossing 35 pitches over two appearances in three days, so it fell to Musgrove, who closed out a second save in five days.
Sep 16 2017Musgrove allowed one run on one hit while striking out three across two innings to earn the save Saturday against the Mariners.Musgrove was protecting a three-run lead, and aside from allowing a solo homer in the ninth inning, he easily closed out the victory. This was just his second save opportunity of the season, and the first one he was able to convert. With a 4.89 ERA on the season, he hasn't been a strong fantasy option.
Jul 25 2017Musgrove (5-8) allowed two hits and struck out three over three scoreless relief innings in Monday's 13-4 win over the Phillies.A two-hour rain delay ended starter Brad Peacock's night after just three innings, so Musgrove, in his new role out of the bullpen, got the Astros through innings four through six. During those three innings, Houston scored seven times, making it a comfortable win. This will be Musgrove's role going forward.
Jul 19 2017Musgrove will move from the starting rotation to the bullpen to make room for Collin McHugh (elbow), Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The Astros announced McHugh is ready to make his season debut Saturday, meaning someone had to be booted from the rotation. Musgrove will provide some length out of the bullpen and be on hand as a fill-in starter if needed.
Jul 18 2017Musgrove is the most logical candidate to be replaced in the starting rotation by the returning Collin McHugh (elbow), Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.McHugh is expected to rejoin the Astros' rotation for this weekend's series against Baltimore with Friday's series-opener representing a normal five-day routine. Friday is also the day that Musgrove is line to start. Given Musgrove's 6.12 ERA and a less-than stellar start Sunday against the Twins, he looks like the obvious starter to be removed from the rotation. It then becomes a matter of having Musgrove remain on a starting track at Triple-A Fresno or have him pitch out of Houston's bullpen.
Jul 15 2017Musgrove (4-8) gave up four earned runs on eight hits over five innings Saturday against the Twins, suffering his fourth loss in his last five outings.Musgrove settled down after being victimized by a leadoff home run from Brian Dozier, only allowing the Twins to scrape a run across in the fifth on a double play. However, his luck ran out in the six inning, as he allowed a walk to Miguel Sano and back-to-back singles by Max Kepler and Robbie Grossman before being lifted. Reliever Tony Sipp promptly allowed a two-run double to Eddie Rosario, putting Musgrove on the line for the loss while raising his ERA to an unappealing 6.12. With Collin McHugh (elbow) set to return next week, it appears the young right-hander's next outing will either be out of bullpen or with Triple-A Fresno.
Jul 10 2017Musgrove would likely head to the bullpen once all of Houston's starters are healthy, according to manager A.J. Hinch, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.Musgrove is in the rotation for now, but with Dallas Keuchel (neck) nearing a return and Collin McHugh (elbow) not too far behind, there will be little room in the rotation. He'll get another couple of starts before Hinch needs to make a decision. If he pitches well in his upcoming outings, Musgrove will likely stay in Houston and pitch out of the pen. Otherwise, he'll head back to Triple-A Fresno and continue to work on what's ailing his mechanics.
Jul 7 2017Musgrove said he felt more comfortable with his mechanics during his start Wednesday, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.Musgrove, who had been demoted to Triple-A Fresno after posting a 6.01 ERA in the majors, made a spot start for Houston on Wednesday. While at Fresno, the 6-foot-5 right-hander examined his delivery and took steps to fix it. Musgrove had been feeling pain in his right hip when he loaded on his right side before pushing off the rubber toward home plate. His hesitance to load sapped his velocity and derailed his command. He worked with the Fresno staff to find an easier way to load and the results have been hopeful. His velocity Wednesday averaged 93 mph and topped out at 95. That's all good news for Musgrove, but it's unknown if he'll re-enter the Astros' rotation permanently. With Dallas Keuchel (neck) and Collin McHugh (elbow) expected to rejoin the starting staff following the All-Star break, there may not be room for Musgrove.
Jul 5 2017Musgrove allowed four runs on five hits while striking out six over 5.2 innings but came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 10-4 win over the Braves. He threw an impressive 77 of 93 pitches for strikes and held Atlanta scoreless through four innings before running into trouble in a four-run fifth. With a number of Houston pitchers set to return to action over the next couple of weeks, including Dallas Keuchel and Charlie Morton, Musgrove's outing may not have been good enough to allow him to hang onto a rotation spot coming out of the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2017Musgrove was called up by the Astros on Wednesday.Musgrove will start Wednesday's series finale against the Braves after cruising through a start with Triple-A Fresno, during which he struck out seven over seven shutout innings. The right-hander got shelled against the Mariners during his latest outing at the major-league level, and has struggled throughout the course of this season, posting a 6.01 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP in 13 starts.
Jul 4 2017Musgrove will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno to start Wednesday's game against the Braves, Julia Morales of Root Sports Southwest reports.Musgrove will enter the Astros' rotation in place of David Paulino, who was suspended for 80 games last week after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. With the All-Star break approaching, Musgrove may only be needed for one start before returning to Fresno to continue working some kinks out. The 24-year-old compiled a 6.01 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 13 starts (67.1 innings) with the Astros earlier in the season.
Jul 1 2017Musgrove could start Wednesday in place of David Paulino, who was suspended 80 games Saturday after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Paulino's suspension put the Astros in a position to find another starter to take his next turn Wednesday. Musgrove, who was demoted to Triple-A Fresno a week ago, started his first game for the Grizzlies on Thursday and was dominant. The Astros would like him to get a few more starts in the minors, but the Paulino situation left the team in a bind. With injuries to members of the major-league rotation, the two minor-league starters currently on the 40-man roster already up with the team, and Musgrove's next turn aligned for Tuesday, it makes sense that Houston would call him up from Fresno to take Paulino's spot.
Jul 1 2017Musgrove pitched seven scoreless innings for Triple-A Fresno on Thursday. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out seven. The recently demoted right-hander induced a couple of double-plays and faced one batter over the minimum. Musgrove's ERA in the majors shot up to 6.01 before his demotion last weekend. If he continues to pitch as he did Thursday, his stay in the minors won't last long. Musgrove is eligible to be recalled next Tuesday, although it's likely the Astros want to see more than one start from Musgrove to be convinced he's ready for MLB hitters.
Jun 29 2017Musgrove will start for Triple-A Fresno on Friday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. This will be Musgrove's first start since he was demoted from the Astros over the last weekend. Musgrove will need to use his time with the Grizzlies to correct himself, but even if he does, there's no guarantee he'll be back in the majors. Dallas Keuchel (neck), Charlie Morton (latissimus) and Collin McHugh (elbow) all are nearing a return to join Lance McCullers in Houston's rotation. Beyond that, Mike Fiers and Brad Peacock each look like they belong there as well. It's time for Musgrove to take care of what he can control and let the situation play itself out.
Jun 25 2017Musgrove was demoted to Triple-A Fresno on Saturday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. This transaction did not come as a surprise. Musgrove had a 10.29 ERA over the three starts he made since returning from a stint on the disabled list due to shoulder inflammation. For the season, the 24-year-old right-hander's ERA (6.01) ranks 102nd out of 108 starters who have pitched at least 60 innings. He's expected to make his first start for the Grizzlies on Thursday. His length of stay in the minor leagues hinges on his progress at Fresno and the performances in the majors of prospects Francis Martes and David Paulino. He will be first eligible to return to the majors on July 4.
Jun 24 2017Musgrove has minor-league options available and could be allowed to work through his recent struggles at Triple-A Fresno, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Musgrove, who was tagged for nine runs over 3.1 innings Friday, has allowed 82 hits and 14 home runs over 67.1 innings and completed six innings in only four of his 13 starts. Musgrove's next scheduled start comes Thursday, but Lance McCullers' (back) return from the DL on Saturday affords manager A.J. Hinch the option of keeping both Francis Martes and David Paulino in the rotation until Musgrove rights himself.
Jun 24 2017Musgrove has minor league options available and could be allowed to work through his recent struggles at Triple-A Fresno, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Musgrove, who was tagged for nine runs over 3.1 innings Friday, has allowed 82 hits and 14 home runs over 67.1 innings and completed six innings in only four of his 13 starts. Jun 23 2017Musgrove (4-7) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and a walk, struck out four and lasted just 3.2 innings Friday night in a loss to Seattle.Musgrove is struggling of late, as he is now 1-4 over his past five starts and has allowed at least five runs on three of them. He served up three home runs in Friday's start and has now given up a whopping 14 in just 13 outings, the main driver behind his brutal 6.01 ERA.
Jun 18 2017Musgrove said he should get up to 100 pitches Sunday against Boston, his second start since coming off the disabled list, Mark Eisenhauer of the Houston Chronicle reports.Musgrove, who missed two starts due to inflammation in his right shoulder, last pitched Monday when he allowed two runs on five hits in a 75-pitch outing over 4.2 innings. Manager A.J. Hinch said Musgrove is not yet 100 percent but feels 100 pitches is a reasonable goal for the right-hander's second start.
Jun 18 2017Musgrove (4-6) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 5.2 innings in a loss Sunday to the Red Sox.Musgrove was nasty at times, as he was able to induce 10 swinging strikes in just 90 pitches. Unfortunately, he was just too sloppy to make it count. When he missed, he missed badly, as he was touched up for a pair of home runs that accounted for three of the five runs he allowed. This was just Musgrove's second start since returning from a disabled list trip for shoulder discomfort, and he may need another start to get back to midseason form.
Jun 12 2017Musgrove (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Rangers.Musgrove took a little longer than expected to return from the DL following a bout with shoulder discomfort, but he'll rejoin the rotation this week and line up for two starts, with his second turn likely to come over the weekend against the Red Sox. The right-hander was able to toss a bullpen session over the weekend without any complications, so it's not expected he'll face any restrictions with his pitch count in his return to the mound. Lance McCullers (back) was placed on the DL in order to facilitate Musgrove's activation.
Jun 12 2017Musgrove (4-5) allowed two runs on five hits and one walk across 4.2 innings in Monday's loss to the Rangers. He struck out two.Making his first start since coming off the disabled list with a shoulder issue, Musgrove pitched well aside from a second-inning rally which saw the Rangers plate a pair of runs on back-to-back triples. He was removed after 75 pitches with two outs in the fifth, but it appears the team was simply exercising caution after his injury absence. Musgrove has compiled an uninspiring 4.81 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP this season, but he has pitched respectably in four of his last five starts overall and will look to go deeper into the game Sunday against the Red Sox.
Jun 11 2017Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed Musgrove (shoulder) would start Monday against the Rangers, Christian Boutwell of MLB.com reports.Musgrove experienced no further shoulder discomfort after his most recent bullpen session, so he'll rejoin the rotation this week and line up for two starts, with a second likely coming July 18 against the Red Sox. With Musgrove returning to the fray, it's expected that David Paulino will lose out on a starting role and head back to Triple-A Fresno.
Jun 8 2017Musgrove (shoulder) will return to the rotation Monday against the Rangers, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old was originally targeting a Sunday return, but he'll wait an extra day to be activated in order to allow David Paulino to make one more start in the big leagues. Due to this, Musgrove will face off with Rangers' ace Yu Darvish to open up the home series with Texas.
Jun 6 2017Musgrove (shoulder) is targeting a return to the rotation on Sunday against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. He has been on the disabled list with shoulder discomfort since May 27, but played some low-intensity catch at 70-90 feet on Monday after receiving a cortisone shot four days prior. The goal is for Musgrove to throw a bullpen session Thursday, using all four of his pitches, and if that goes off without a hitch, he will be on track to start the final game of this weekend's home series against the Halos. He has notched quality starts in three of his last six outings, but two blowup starts have left him with a 4.22 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 30:11 K:BB in 32 innings over that stretch.
Jun 5 2017Musgrove (shoulder) played catch Monday for the first time since landing on the disabled list, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. The hope is that Musgrove's shoulder will respond well enough to this session that he'll be able to throw a bullpen session Thursday. This likely means he won't be ready for a return to the rotation until next week, but a firmer timetable should emerge once Houston reveals whether or not he'll need a rehab assignment prior to returning.
Jun 4 2017Musgrove (shoulder) won't be activated from the disabled list when eligible ahead of Tuesday's game against the Royals, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports. "We're just not ready to ramp up Musgrove yet," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said on Sunday. "He's feeling better than when we put him on the DL. We're going to push him back continually and see where he fits later in the week."After Musgrove was placed on the DL on May 31, the expectation was that he would only miss one start with the sore shoulder, but since he has yet to resume throwing, the Astros decided to push back his recovery timetable. Musgrove received a cortisone shot Friday to address the soreness, so if that ends up having the desired effect, the right-hander could throw in the next couple of days and rejoin the rotation by next weekend. David Paulino will pick up another start Tuesday while Musgrove remains sidelined.
May 31 2017Manager A.J. Hinch said that Musgrove (shoulder), who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, is expected to miss just one start, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.Musgrove endured no injury complications in his most recent start Friday against the Orioles in which he tossed seven scoreless innings, but after he experiencing shoulder discomfort while throwing off flat ground Monday, the Astros decided it was best to temporarily shelve him. David Paulino was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to fill Musgrove's scheduled turn Wednesday against the Twins, but it should just be a one-time cameo in the rotation. Assuming Musgrove is able to throw over the weekend without any renewed soreness, he's expected to take the hill the next time his turn comes up June 6 in Kansas City.
May 30 2017Musgrove was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday due to shoulder discomfort, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. It's unclear when this injury cropped up, especially considering he tossed seven scoreless innings in his most recent outing Saturday. No word has emerged on how long he's expected to be out, either, but David Paulino will take his spot in the rotation until Musgrove is back and ready for action again.
May 27 2017Musgrove (4-4) tossed seven scoreless innings Friday, scattering four hits and striking out six, in a 2-0 win over the Orioles. The O's couldn't get a runner past second base against Musgrove, who rebounded from his shortest outing of the season to deliver his best and longest. It's only the right-hander's third quality start of the year, but he'll try to find some consistency in his next outing Wednesday in Minnesota.
May 21 2017Musgrove (3-4) allowed seven runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four over three-plus innings in Sunday's 8-6 loss to the Indians. This was the shortest of Musgrove's 19 career major-league starts. The 24-year-old failed to reach six innings for the sixth time in nine starts and has a rotation-worst 5.63 ERA in 2017. ERAs will get that high when you give up hits in bunches like Musgrove who ranks 85th among qualified starters with 10.41 H/9. He told Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle that he was just a two-pitch pitcher Sunday, lacking a feel for his slider and changeup. He's next scheduled to start Friday at home against Baltimore.
May 16 2017Musgrove (3-3) allowed one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.2 innings in Monday's 7-2 victory over the Marlins.Astros starters are learning all you have to do is keep a game close, and eventually the potent offense will put some numbers on the board. On Monday, it was Yulieski Guriel taking Junichi Tazawa deep in the sixth inning for a grand slam -- Houston's second granny in as many games -- turning a deficit into a lead the Astros would not relinquish. Musgrove worked around several baserunners with the help of a double-play, a pickoff and and an outfield assist. He also kept the ball in the park, not allowing a home run for the second time in eight starts. He's next scheduled to pitch Sunday at home against Cleveland.
May 10 2017Musgrove (2-3) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings in Wednesday's 4-2 win over Atlanta.Musgrove had some trouble early, working around baserunners in the first three innings, with thanks to the three double-plays behind him, before surrendering two home runs in the fourth. Unlike his previous start, Musgrove was able to control his emotions, settle in and retire the final seven batters faced to gain his second win in seven starts. He's next lined up to face the Marlins in Miami on Monday.
