Jun 26 2025Manaea (oblique/elbow) played catch Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first time he's thrown since he was given a cortisone shot after being diagnosed with a loose body in his left elbow. Manaea had to pause his rehab assignment briefly after the elbow issue popped up, but he's on track to make what is expected to be his final rehab start next week. The left-hander initially went on the injured list prior to Opening Day with an oblique strain and could make his 2025 Mets debut prior to the All-Star break.
Jun 24 2025Manaea (oblique) will be shut down for 2-to-3 days after being given a cortisone shot to combat a loose body in his left elbow, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After missing the first part of the season with a strained oblique, Manaea had appeared set to rejoin the Mets' rotation perhaps after just one more rehab start. The new injury puts Manaea's situation somewhat in flux, although president of baseball operations David Stearns indicated Tuesday that the elbow issue shouldn't set Manaea back more than a few days. The goal is for the southpaw to make another rehab start by the middle of next week before being re-evaluated.
Jun 21 2025Manaea (oblique) struck out seven over 5.1 innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, allowing one run on two hits without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first rehab appearance for Syracuse, Manaea piggybacked starter Brandon Sproat and got stretched out to 62 pitches (45 strikes). The performance was a marked improvement on Manaea's first few rehab starts at High-A, as he gave up seven runs in 6.2 innings with an 8:3 K:BB for Brooklyn. The 33-year-old southpaw will likely need at least one more rehab outing to push his pitch count a little higher, but he appears on track to make his season debut with the Mets at the beginning of July.
Jun 20 2025Manaea (oblique) will move to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday to make his fourth rehab start, Ben Krimmel of SNY.tv reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea has been on the shelf all season while recovering from a right oblique strain, but he looks to be just a couple weeks away from returning from the 60-day injured list. The veteran southpaw most recently pitched Sunday for High-A Brooklyn, covering 2.1 innings and striking out two batters while allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks. After Friday's outing, Manaea is expected to make at least one more rehab start before joining the big-league club. His return is tentatively scheduled for a three-game set against the Brewers that starts July 1, per Mike Puma of the New York Post.
Jun 11 2025Manaea (oblique) struck out four while giving up two hits and a walk over 2.2 scoreless innings for High-A Brooklyn on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw built up to 46 pitches (31 strikes) in his second start for the Cyclones, and he's put together a 6:1 K:BB through 4.1 innings for Brooklyn to begin his rehab stint. Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Manaea is set for at least three more rehab starts before the Mets will consider activating him from the injured list, a timeline which could have him joining the big-league rotation as soon as July 1 against the Brewers.
Jun 7 2025Manaea (oblique) allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out two in 1.2 innings during his rehab start with High-A Brooklyn on Friday, John Sparaco of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was cleared to embark on a rehab assignment after starting the season on the injured list due to a right oblique strain that he suffered in spring training. The 33-year-old southpaw ended up tossing 36 pitches in what was an underwhelming outing, but it's a step in the right direction as far as his rehab program goes. Manaea will need several rehab starts without setbacks before being cleared to return to the major-league roster.
Jun 5 2025Manaea (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Brooklyn on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea is slated to throw around 35 pitches in what will be his first game action since last year's postseason. The left-hander will continue to build up his pitch count and likely move to a higher affiliate, with the goal of rejoining the Mets' rotation in late June or early July.
Jun 2 2025Manaea (oblique) threw 29 pitches in a live bullpen session Monday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets will wait to see how Manaea feels following his latest bullpen to determine whether he's ready to embark on a rehab assignment. He's managed to throw several side sessions over the last few weeks as he continues to make his way back from a right oblique strain.
May 30 2025Manaea (oblique) will face hitters again before beginning a rehab assignment in early June, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He threw 20 pitches during a live batting practice session Thursday and another 15 pitches in the bullpen. Manaea has been sidelined since reporting to spring training, so he will need a lengthy rehab assignment before joining the big-league rotation.
May 26 2025Manaea (oblique) will throw live batting practice Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea will face hitters for the first time since being placed on the 15-day injured list Feb. 24 due to a strained left oblique. The next step in his recovery will be a rehab assignment, though he may throw multiple live sessions before heading out. While he'll likely need several rehab appearances before being activated, Manaea is on track to make his 2025 MLB in early July.
May 16 2025Manaea (oblique) is slated to throw another bullpen session Tuesday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea resumed a throwing program in mid-April following a PRP injection and has progressed to throwing from the bump again. He shouldn't be far off from facing hitters and eventually going out on a rehab assignment, but no target date for either has been revealed by the Mets yet.
May 9 2025Manaea (oblique) played catch from 120 feet Friday and is soon expected to start throwing off a mound, Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander restarted his throwing program in mid-April after receiving a PRP injection to address lingering problems with his strained right oblique, and he's now starting to ramp up in his progression. Manaea will still require a considerable buildup period and a lengthy rehab assignment, but it seems like he could make his season debut before the end of June.
May 5 2025Manaea (oblique) has fallen behind Frankie Montas (lat) in his recovery schedule, but the Mets haven't ruled out the left-hander making his 2025 debut at some point in June, Tim Britton of the Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea suffered a right oblique strain in late February, and while he began a throwing progression in mid-March, he was quickly shut down due to continued discomfort in his side. The 33-year-old resumed playing catch April 14 after getting a platelet-rich plasma injection, but he remains weeks away from a potential rehab assignment, and Manaea will need a full build-up before he's ready to join the big-league rotation.
Apr 14 2025Manaea (oblique) started playing catch from 60 feet Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea has been struggling through a right oblique strain that caused him to be placed on the 15-day injured list to begin the season. MRI results from Monday showed improvement, which prompted the veteran southpaw to resume playing catch off flat ground, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that they'll limit Manaea's throwing to 60 feet for the next 10 days and assess the 33-year-old after that.
Apr 4 2025Manaea said Friday that his strained right oblique is feeling good after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection Tuesday, Manny Gomez of NJ.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea is still only three days into his two-week no-throw period following his injection, but the fact that he's beginning to feel better is encouraging after he had struggled with the injury for most of spring training. Once he's cleared to begin throwing, the Mets will likely build the 33-year-old back up slowly, and he'll presumably make a few rehab starts in the minors before his season debut.
Apr 1 2025Manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Manaea is still having problems with his strained right oblique and will be shut down from throwing for two weeks after receiving a platelet-rich-plasma injection, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander suffered the injury early in spring training and was able to start a throwing program in mid-March, but he apparently hasn't been able to ramp up as expected over the past couple weeks. Manaea appeared to have a chance of making his 2025 debut before the end of April, but that now shouldn't be expected to happen until at least late May.
Mar 27 2025The Mets placed Manaea on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right oblique strain, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea injured his oblique in late February and began a throwing progression in mid-March. There's no timetable yet for his return, but it's possible he is back before the end of April.
Mar 13 2025Manaea was cleared to play catch earlier this week after an MRI on his right oblique was negative, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With his oblique strain healed, the left-hander has begun his throwing progression. Manaea will need several weeks to get fully stretched out, but he could be ready to make his season debut sometime in April.
Feb 24 2025Manaea has been diagnosed with a right oblique strain and is expected to begin the season on the 15-day injured list, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea will be shut down for a couple weeks before being re-evaluated, but even in a best-case scenario he will not have time to be built back up for Opening Day. It's another blow to the Mets' starting pitching depth after it was revealed last week that Frankie Montas has a right lat strain. The club has been planning to deploy a six-man rotation early in the season, but it might now have to rethink that strategy.
Dec 22 2024Manaea agreed to a three-year, $75 million contract with the Mets on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After posting a 4.73 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 67 appearances (38 starts) between the Padres and Giants during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, Manaea bounced back during his first season with the Mets last year, generating a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184:63 K:BB while pitching a career-high 181.2 innings across 32 regular-season starts. He'll return to the Mets and be part of a pitching staff that has already added Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes during the offseason. Manaea will be a front-end starter for a team that reached the NLCS in 2024 and enters the 2025 season with lofty aspirations after signing Juan Soto to a record-breaking deal in early December.
Nov 18 2024Manaea rejected the Mets' one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer Monday, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was expected, as Manaea is in line to land a multi-year contract this offseason. That deal could come from the Mets, as the two sides are interested in a reunion. If Manaea signs elsewhere, the Mets will receive a draft pick. The left-hander collected a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181.2 regular-season innings in 2024.
Nov 4 2024The Mets extended Manaea a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea is likely to net a lucrative, multi-year contract this offseason, and if that agreement is with another team, the Mets will recoup a draft pick. The left-hander posted a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181.2 regular-season innings in 2024.
Nov 2 2024Manaea is expected to decline his $13.5 million player option for 2025, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea posted a 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 181.2 innings in 2024 -- all of which represent career-best marks for a full season. The 32-year-old southpaw will now look to capitalize on his strong campaign and likely pursue a multi-year deal in free agency.
Oct 12 2024Manaea will start Game 2 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea hasn't pitched since Tuesday, so it's hardly a surprise for him to start on what will be five days of rest. The 32-year-old southpaw has given up three earned runs through 12 innings during the postseason and will be following Kodai Senga in the rotation.
Oct 6 2024Manaea was announced Sunday as the Mets' starter for Game 3 of the NLDS versus the Phillies on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The announcement comes as no surprise, as Manaea will be on five days' rest after starting Game 2 of the National League Wild-Card Series this past Wednesday against Milwaukee. In that contest, the left-hander yielded two runs over five innings and came away with a no-decision. In three starts versus Philadelphia during the regular season, Manaea posted a 5.40 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB over 16.2 frames.
Oct 1 2024Manaea will start Wednesday in Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series against the Brewers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was knocked around in Milwaukee in his final start of the regular season, but it's no surprise he's getting the nod for Game 2 based on his 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184:63 K:BB across 181.2 innings this season. Jose Quintana is a likely bet to start Game 3, if necessary, although Mets manager Carlos Mendoza is holding off naming a starter for that contest for now.
Sep 27 2024Manaea (12-6) took the loss Friday against the Brewers, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out just one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old's run of brilliance came to an end, as he had pitched to a 2.91 ERA over 65 innings across his previous 10 starts. This marks the first time Manaea has allowed five or more earned runs since his first start of the second half against Miami on July 19. Things unraveled quickly for the Mets southpaw, as Rhys Hoskins launched a grand slam to left field in the opening frame. Manaea concludes a solid regular season, pitching to a 3.47 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 184:63 K:BB across 181.2 innings. He likely will enter free agency this offseason as the two-year deal he signed with the Mets this past January includes an opt-out clause.
Sep 25 2024Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said there's a "good chance" Manaea pitches Friday against Milwaukee after Wednesday's and Thursday's games against Atlanta were postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was scheduled to start Thursday's contest, and it's hardly a surprise the Mets are hoping to get him on the mound as soon as possible in preparation for the wild-card round next week. Manaea has a 3.29 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 183:61 K:BB over 178 innings through 31 starts this season.
Sep 22 2024Manaea (12-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-3 victory over the Phillies, giving up three runs on three hits over seven innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Solo shots by Kyle Schwarber to lead off the game and Nick Castellanos in the fifth inning accounted for most of the damage off Manaea, but he was otherwise locked in as he won his fourth straight decision. The quality start was the southpaw's third straight and seventh in his last eight outings, a stretch in which he's posted a 2.95 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 58:10 K:BB through 55 innings. Manaea is scheduled to make his final start of the regular season on the road next week against Atlanta -- the team closest to the Mets in the race for the final wild-card spot in the NL.
Sep 17 2024Manaea came away with a no-decision in Monday's 2-1 extra-inning win over the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty was impressive once again as he delivered his sixth quality start in his last seven trips to the mound, but Manaea was actually in line for the loss until the Mets finally got on the board in the eighth inning. Over his last 10 outings, Manaea has posted a dazzling 2.49 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 76:16 K:BB through 65 innings, but he's had to settle for a no-decision in three straight starts. He'll try to get back in the win column in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Phillies.
Sep 11 2024Manaea didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Blue Jays, allowing one run on three hits and four walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea's now gone at least 6.2 innings in six straight starts, posting a 3.07 ERA in that span (41 innings). The left-hander is 11-5 on the season with a 3.35 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 171 strikeouts (23 shy of a career high) across 164 innings. Manaea's currently lined up to face the Nationals at home next week in his next outing.
Sep 6 2024Manaea did not factor into the decision in Friday's 6-4 victory over the Reds, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The New York southpaw looked untouchable for most of this outing, generating a fantastic 19 whiffs to pick up his nine Ks. However, Manaea was done in by the pair of two-run homers he allowed, first to Elly De La Cruz in the fourth inning before being knocked out of the game by TJ Friedl's blast in the seventh. The 32-year-old has been brilliant over his last eight starts, going 5-1 with a 2.81 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 62:11 K:BB across 51.1 innings. He currently forecasts to face the Blue Jays on the road for his next start.
Sep 1 2024Manaea (11-5) tossed seven shutout innings while allowing just two hits and two walks in Sunday's win over the White Sox. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was dominant once again, posting a start of at least seven innings for the third time in his last four outings and fifth in his last seven. Manaea has a 2.79 ERA since July 1, allowing three runs or fewer in all but one start since then. On his fourth team in as many years, Manaea is putting together one of the best seasons of his career. He currently owns a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 154:54 K:BB in 150.2 innings and lines up to face the Reds in his next start.
Aug 28 2024Manaea (10-5) allowed three runs on four hits while striking out 11 over 6.2 innings in a win over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. He did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea cruised through six frames, allowing just one hit while striking out 10 batters. He came apart a bit in the seventh, allowing three hits, two of which were home runs, leading to three runs for the Diamondbacks and his departure from the game. Tuesday marked Manaea's second double-digit strikeout effort against the Diamondbacks this season and his fourth such game overall this season. He's now posted quality starts in five of his last six appearances and owns a 3.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 149:52 K:BB in 143.2 innings overall this season. Manaea lines up to take the mound again versus the White Sox this weekend.
Aug 21 2024Manaea allowed three runs on three hits over seven innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Orioles. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea got off to a stellar start Wednesday, setting down the first 17 batters he faced. However, he'd hit Jackson Holliday with a pitch with two outs in the sixth inning before surrendering a two-run homer to Austin Slater, Baltimore's first hit of the game. Manaea has now gone seven innings in four of his last five outings, pitching to a 2.61 ERA in that span (31 innings). Overall, the left-hander is 9-5 on the year with a 3.48 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 138:52 K:BB across 137 innings. Manaea is currently lined up for a road matchup with the Diamondbacks early next week in his next outing.
Aug 16 2024Manaea (9-5) earned the win Friday against the Marlins, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over seven innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The New York southpaw worked around four extra-base hits -- three doubles and one homer -- to collect his ninth quality start of the season. Manaea has continued his success from the first half since the All-Star break, going 3-2 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:12 K:BB across 33.2 innings. Overall, the 32-year-old has pitched to a 3.46 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 129:52 K:BB in 130 innings this season. Currently is currently scheduled to make his next outing against the Orioles at home next week.
Aug 11 2024Manaea (8-5) took the loss against the Mariners on Saturday, allowing three runs on four hits and five walks over three innings while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs charged to Manaea came across in the opening frame when the right-hander surrendered hits to four of the first six batters he faced, including three doubles, while also allowing a runner to advance on a wild pitch. He would manage to get through the next two innings unscathed but was relieved by Huascar Brazoban to open the fourth after throwing 85 pitches through three innings. It marked the shortest outing of the season for Manaea after hurling 14 scoreless frames over his previous two starts, while the five walks on the night matched his season high.
Aug 5 2024Manaea (8-4) picked up the win Monday, scattering six hits over seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory against the Cardinals. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea tossed a gem for his second consecutive outing, the first time since 2018 in which he throws back-to-back starts of seven innings without allowing an earned run. Manaea picked up double-digit strikeouts in consecutive starts for the first time in his career. The 32-year-old is 5-1 with a 2.28 ERA over his last 10 starts, the fourth-best ERA in the National League over that span.
Jul 31 2024Manaea (7-4) picked up the win Tuesday, scattering two hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Twins. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw tied his season high in innings while setting a new season high in Ks, as Manaea generated an eye-popping 23 swinging strikes among his 96 pitches. He's been outstanding over the last six weeks, giving up three earned runs or less in eight of his last nine starts while posting a 2.58 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 52:21 K:BB through 52.1 innings over that stretch, and Manaea's impressive run likely contributed to the Mets' decision not to make a more significant rotation addition than Paul Blackburn at the trade deadline. Manaea is scheduled to make his next start on the road early next week in St. Louis.
Jul 24 2024Manaea allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea came up an out short of qualifying for the win, though he labored through the appearance with 103 pitches (57 strikes). The two runs on his line came on solo home runs by Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto. Manaea has allowed more than three runs just once in his last eight outings, but he's had trouble pitching deep into games. For the season, the southpaw has a 3.74 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 101:45 K:BB through 106 innings over 20 starts. His next start is projected to come at home versus the Twins.
Jul 20 2024Manaea (6-4) took the loss Friday, coughing up five runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings as the Mets were downed 6-4 by the Marlins. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw was hit hard even during a 1-2-3 first inning -- one of the outs came when Jeff McNeil robbed Bryan De La Cruz of an extra-base hit at the wall in right field -- and Miami put runners in scoring position against Manaea in every other frame he worked. It was the first time in July that he'd failed to complete at least six innings, and the first time Manaea has given up more than three runs since June 8. He'll take a 3.73 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 97:41 K:BB through 101.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week against the Yankees.
Jul 13 2024Manaea (6-3) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings in a 7-6 victory over the Rockies. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty served up two homers, but he did a good job of minimizing the damage on a night when the two teams combined for nine long balls -- the highest single-game total in MLB this season. Manaea has delivered three straight quality starts, giving him six on the year, and he's allowed three runs or fewer in six straight trips to the mound, a stretch in which he's gone 3-0 with a 2.02 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 36:15 K:BB through 35.2 innings.
Jul 7 2024Manaea yielded two hits, three walks and struck out six over six shutout frames but did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had another strong outing, picking up back-to-back quality starts for the first time since 2022. The left-hander did not allow a hit until two outs in the fourth, when Ke'Bryan Hayes reached on an infield hit. Unfortunately, Manaea did not get much run support, which continues a common theme with him since he's still at five wins this season despite allowing three runs or fewer in 14 of his 17 starts.
Jul 2 2024Manaea didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against Washington, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks across seven innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Manaea wasn't rewarded with the win, Tuesday's start marked his first time going deeper than six innings this season and was his third straight outing without surrendering a home run. The southpaw owns a 3.67 ERA across 83.1 innings, which would be his best since 2019, and has allowed only five earned runs in his last 22.2 innings pitched. Manaea is on track to start against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Jun 26 2024Manaea (5-3) earned the win over the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing two hits and issuing five walks while striking out three batters over five scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was impressive in yielding just two hits -- both singles -- but allowed traffic in all but one of his five frames due to his struggle to throw strikes. The left-hander issued a season-high five free passes, but the Yankees bailed him out by grounding into three double plays. Manaea has been unable to pitch into the sixth inning in each of his past seven starts, though his shortish outing Wednesday was likely due to a fifth-inning rain delay after which he did not return.
Jun 19 2024Manaea pitched 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Texas on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea gave up just one run through five frames but ran into trouble in the sixth. In that frame, a two-out Josh Smith double narrowed New York's lead to one and resulted in Manaea getting the hook. Reliever Sean Reid-Foley followed by allowing his inherited runner to score, taking Manaea out of contention for a victory. It was still a pretty strong outing overall for the left-handed starter, though he's now failed to complete six innings in each of his past five starts.
Jun 15 2024Manaea (4-3) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over five-plus innings in a 2-1 victory over the Padres. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw did serve up a homer for the fifth straight start, a solo shot in the fifth inning by Jackson Merrill, but it was the only damage Manaea surrendered. It was a strong bounce-back effort after he'd been tagged for 11 earned runs in 9.1 frames over his prior two outings, and Manaea will take a 4.11 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 67:26 K:BB through 65.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week against the Rangers.
Jun 8 2024Manaea (3-3) took the loss Saturday against the Phillies in London, allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea got off to a good start Saturday, holding the Phillies to just one hit through his first three scoreless innings. However, Bryce Harper launched a home run with one out in the fourth before Philadelphia rallied for five runs with two outs in the frame, forcing Manaea from the game. The left-hander's now allowed 11 earned runs over 9.1 innings in his last two starts after pitching to a 2.70 ERA over his previous seven outings. Overall, Manaea sports a 4.30 ERA with a 1.35 WHIP and 60:25 K:BB across 60.2 innings this year. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for next week at home versus the Padres.
Jun 1 2024Manaea (3-2) took the loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea tossed two scoreless frames before Christian Walker hit a grand slam in the third inning and then surrendered two more runs and exited with two outs in the sixth . The 10 strikeouts were a season high for Manaea, and it was the first outing in which he has allowed more than three earned runs since April 13. Through 11 starts, Manaea has posted a 3.63 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 57:24 K:BB and tentatively lines up to face the Phillies next weekend in the London Series.
May 26 2024Manaea did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs, five hits and a walk over five innings against the Giants. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea threw 88 pitches, allowing single runs in the second and third innings prior to exiting the game after five innings. He was in line for a tough-luck loss but was bailed out when the Mets scored three in the bottom of the ninth for the come-from-behind victory. Manaea entered the game on six days rest and tallied his seventh-consecutive start of allowing three or fewer runs. Through 10 starts, Manaea has a solid ERA of 3.16 with a 1.29 WHIP and 47 strikeouts over 51.1 innings. His next start is tentatively scheduled to take place next weekend when the Mets travel to Arizona to take on the Diamondbacks.
May 19 2024Manaea (3-1) earned the win Sunday against Miami, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea allowed three or fewer runs for his sixth straight appearance, but he did yield his second homer of the campaign when Dane Myers hit a two-run blast in the second inning. Although Manaea hasn't gone deeper than six innings this year, he owns a solid 3.11 ERA with 41 strikeouts across 46.1 innings. He's on track for a home start against the Giants next Sunday.
May 13 2024Manaea did not factor into the decision Monday against the Phillies, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With his effort Monday night, Manaea secured his second straight quality start of six innings, lowering his season ERA to 3.05 over 41.1 innings. Even more encouragingly, the Mets lefty issued only one walk for his second consecutive start after issuing multiple free passes in all his previous six starts. He is slated to face the Marlins on the road in his next start this weekend.
May 6 2024Manaea (2-1) earned the win over St. Louis on Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out one batter over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea didn't have his swing-and-miss stuff Monday -- he induced just four whiffs and recorded only one strikeout -- but that didn't stop him from keeping the Cardinals' bats mostly under control. The southpaw cruised through five scoreless frames before running out of gas in a three-run St. Louis sixth, but he was able to finish the inning to notch his first quality start since his first appearance of the campaign. Control issues have kept Manaea from going deep into contests this season, so it was promising to see him issue just one free pass -- his fewest of the campaign -- against the Cardinals.
Apr 30 2024Manaea came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Cubs, giving up one run on three hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the fourth straight start, Manaea issued at least three free passes, but the veteran lefty was able to limit the damage before exiting with the score tied 1-1. He tossed 54 of 92 pitches for strikes, and while his 3.07 ERA on the season looks sharp, it comes with a 1.43 WHIP and 30:18 K:BB through 29.1 innings. Manaea will try to tighten things up in his next outing, which lines up to come this weekend in Tampa Bay.
Apr 25 2024Manaea did not factor into the decision in a win over the Giants on Wednesday, hurling 4.2 shutout innings while allowing four hits and four walks. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea struck out the side in the first inning but got himself into trouble in the second after giving up two walks and a single to open the frame. Fortunately for the right-hander, he was still able to work his way out of it without seeing any runs come home while also working his way through a similar jam in the third. Manaea issued a season-high four walks in the contest and has surrendered multiple walks in all five of his outings to open the campaign. However, he's also limited opposing offenses to one or fewer runs three of his five starts.
Apr 19 2024Manaea did not factor into the decision Friday against the Dodgers, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing six earned runs to the Royals in his last start, Manaea pitched well Friday night against the dangerous Dodgers lineup. The Mets lefty managed to stifle the MVP trio of Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, as they collectively went 1-for-8 with one walk and two strikeouts. Manaea faces a much less daunting task in his next start, scheduled to be against the Giants on the road.
Apr 13 2024Manaea (1-1) took the loss to the Royals on Saturday. He was charged with eight runs (six earned) on nine hits and three walks, striking out four over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His Mets career got off to a great start (one earned run allowed in 11 innings), but Manaea came crashing back to reality Saturday. He walked in a run in the second inning and served up a homer to Salvador Perez in the fourth before getting the hook. While the left-hander carries a fair amount of risk from start to start, Manaea can still provide value as a fantasy streamer. Up next is a tough road assignment against the Dodgers.
Apr 7 2024Manaea (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over five innings to earn the victory Sunday over the Reds. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets staked Manaea to an early three-run lead prior to Manaea running into some trouble in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs in the inning. However, a sacrifice fly and a well-timed double play ended the inning, and Manaea then closed out his outing with a perfect fifth to put himself in position for his first win of the season. Manaea has looked great in his two starts with the Mets, surrendering just one run and eight total baserunners with 14 strikeouts over his first 11 innings. His next start is tentatively scheduled to take place next weekend during a three-game home series with the Royals.
Apr 1 2024Manaea yielded a hit and two walks over six shutout frames but did not factor into the decision Monday. He struck out eight during the Mets' loss to the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was dominant Monday, retiring the first 12 batters he faced. The Mets offense couldn't get anything going, preventing the veteran southpaw from picking up a win in his team debut. Manaea threw 55 of 88 pitches for strikes and forced 13 whiffs on 41 swings. He's currently lined up to start in Cincinnati this weekend.
Mar 10 2024Manaea allowed two hits and three walks over four scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw built up to 61 pitches (35 strikes) in an impressive performance that saw him count Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras (twice) among his Ks. Saturday's free passes were also his first of the spring, and Manaea has an 8:3 K:BB through 6.2 innings. After signing a two-year, $28 million contract with the Mets in January, he's being counted on to provide some stability in the rotation, but Manaea has some things to prove after posting a 4.73 ERA in 275.2 innings over the last two seasons between the Padres and Giants.
Mar 3 2024Manaea gave up three runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. He struck out three without walking a batter and threw a wild pitch. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty got in plenty of work in his first game action of the spring, tossing 41 of 56 pitches for strikes, but the results were something of a mixed bag. Manaea did at least keep the ball in the park, although Jazz Chisholm, Avisail Garcia and Jon Berti all laced doubles off him. Manaea is locked into a rotation spot for the Mets this season after making only 10 starts for the Giants in 2023 among his 37 appearances, but New York is counting on him to show the form he flashed in the second half for San Francisco -- over his final 51.2 innings last year, he posted a 2.61 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB.
Feb 17 2024Manaea worked on his changeup this offseason and also plans to incorporate a cutter into his arsenal, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a disastrous 2022 campaign with the Padres, Manaea went to Driveline two winters ago and emerged with more velocity -- he posted a career-high 93.6 mph average fastball last year with the Giants -- and a sweeper he began using in games in late May to complement his slider and change. The 32-year-old southpaw didn't get complacent this offseason, heading back to Driveline to refine his pitch mix further. Manaea was a strong fantasy asset as recently as 2021 with the A's, posting a 3.91 ERA and striking out 194 batters in 179.1 innings, and he's at least put in the work to try and regain that form.
Jan 7 2024Manaea agreed to a two-year, $28 million contract with the Mets on Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After declining his $12.5 million player option for 2024 and becoming a free agent earlier in the offseason, Manaea will get a slight pay increase while he heads to New York on a two-year pact. Much like the deal he signed with the Giants last offseason, Manaea's contract with the Mets contains an opt-out after the 2024 season, per Heyman. The southpaw started in 10 of his 37 appearances in 2023 and finished with a 4.44 ERA across 117.2 innings, but he closed the season in strong fashion, posting a 2.87 ERA from the beginning of August onward. The 31-year-old will presumably occupy a spot at the back end of the Mets' rotation.
Nov 6 2023Manaea exercised the opt-out clause in his contract Monday and will become a free agent, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea would have been due a $12.5 million salary for 2024, but the left-hander has decided to look for a bigger deal on the open market. The 31-year-old had an up-and-down 2023 season, holding a 4.44 ERA and 128:42 K:BB over 117.2 innings covering 10 starts and 27 relief appearances. Manaea showcased more velocity this past season than in 2022 and posted a 2.87 ERA from August onward, so he should be able to find a multi-year deal somewhere.
Sep 27 2023Manaea allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out eight without walking a batter over six innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea rejoined the rotation Sept. 12, and over his last four starts, he's maintained an 18:2 K:BB over 24 innings. He wasn't able to pick up a third straight win, but he earned a second straight quality start. The southpaw had his ups and downs while moving between the rotation and bullpen during the year, but he's posted a respectable 4.44 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 128:42 K:BB over 117.2 innings overall. This was likely his last start of the campaign, and after throwing 100 pitches (67 strikes), it seems improbable that he'd be able to make a relief appearance over the weekend.
Sep 22 2023Manaea (7-6) allowed three hits and struck out two without walking a batter over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Dodgers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was at his best, throwing 61 of 85 pitches for strikes in an efficient start against a dangerous offense. It was just his second quality start of the year, as he's often been used behind an opener. The southpaw has given up just eight runs (six earned) over 21 innings across four games in September. He's at a 4.51 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 120:42 K:BB through 111.2 innings over 36 appearances (nine starts) this year. Manaea is projected for a home outing against the Padres next week, which would likely be his last appearance of the regular season.
Sep 18 2023Manaea (6-6) earned the win Sunday against the rockies, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and no walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea allowed just two baserunners to reach scoring position through the first five innings but couldn't keep the strong effort going into the sixth. He began the frame with a strikeout but then proceeded to allow a single, a home run and another single before being replaced by John Brebbia, who gave up another three more runs. Though only his last two outings have come as starts, Manaea had not given up more than four hits in an outing since July 22, but he's also given up fewer than three earned runs in each of his last five appearances. The 31-year-old now owns a 4.73 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 118:42 K:BB in 104 innings. He figures to stick in the starting rotation to close out the year and lines up to make his next start on the road against the Dodgers.
Sep 15 2023Manaea is slated to start Sunday's game against the Rockies in Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants could end up deploying Manaea behind an opener, but in any case, he'll pitch the majority of the innings Sunday and appears to have settled into a rotation spot at this point. While picking up start Tuesday for the first time since May 10, Manaea took a loss to the Guardians but struck out five while allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks. Despite delivering solid returns in the strikeouts, ERA and WHIP categories his last time out, Manaea makes for a risky streaming option Sunday at hitter-friendly Coors Field.
Sep 12 2023Manaea (5-6) allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out five over 5.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had a decent performance, throwing 56 of 80 pitches for strikes. He faltered in the sixth inning, though a two-out error by LaMonte Wade allowed the Guardians to load the bases. Ryan Walker relieved Manaea and promptly gave up a two-run single. Manaea has often featured as a long reliever this season, pitching to a 4.80 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 115:42 K:BB through 99.1 innings across 34 appearances (seven starts). The southpaw's role going forward is unclear, but he should be available to make his next appearance over the weekend in Colorado, whether that's as a starter or bulk reliever.
Sep 11 2023Manaea is listed as the Giants' starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Guardians at Oracle Park. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll pick up his seventh start of the season and first since May 10, but Manaea has been making extended relief appearances for a while now, having covered between 2.2 and four innings in each of his last six outings. Assuming the Giants stick with the plan to use his as a starter rather than a bulk reliever, Manaea could still struggle to hit the five innings he would need to qualify for a win Tuesday. The Giants have Jakob Junis and Alex Wood on hand to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen if needed, and manager Gabe Kapler may prefer to use Manaea in tandem with one or both of Junis and Wood rather than leaning on the 31-year-old lefty in a traditional starting role.
Aug 31 2023Manaea (5-5) earned the win in bulk relief against San Diego on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and five walks while striking out two batters over 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jakob Junis opened for San Francisco and put up four scoreless, no-hit frames but didn't qualify for the win. That benefitted Manaea, who was credited with the victory as a result of following Junis with 3.1 decent frames of his own. The southpaw got the job done despite struggling to find the strike zone -- he threw just 49 of 86 pitches for strikes and walked a season-high five batters. Manaea has settled into a multi-inning relief role, going at least 2.2 (and no more than four) innings over his past five outings and posting a 3.71 ERA and 2-2 recording during that span.
Aug 27 2023Manaea (4-5) took the loss Saturday, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over 3.2 relief innings as the Giants fell 7-3 to Atlanta. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ryan Walker worked 1.2 innings and allowed a run as the opener before Manaea took over, but it was Austin Riley's solo shot in the fifth off the southpaw that put Atlanta in the lead for good. Manaea's last four appearances have come in a bulk-relief role, and while he's gone 1-2 in that stretch, his 3.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 19:7 K:BB through 13.2 innings suggest he's been somewhat unlucky. If the Giants keep him on a semi-regular schedule, his next outing would likely come on the road next week against the Padres.
Aug 22 2023Manaea (4-4) took the loss Monday against the Phillies. He allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was slated for a bulk role behind Scott Alexander on Monday, though he'd only last 2.2 innings after surrendering three runs on a pair of homers. The 31-year-old Manaea had been pitching well coming into the day, allowing just one run over his last 15 innings. Overall, his ERA is up to 5.06 with a 1.28 WHIP and 102:33 K:BB across 83.2 innings this season.
Aug 20 2023Manaea is expected to serve as the bulk pitcher behind opener Scott Alexander against the Phillies on Monday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea last pitched Tuesday against the Rays and delivered 3.1 scoreless frames as he picked up his fourth win of the season. The veteran left-hander has pitched well over his past six appearances with just one run allowed and a 19:4 K:BB across 15 innings.
Aug 15 2023Manaea (4-3) allowed a hit and two walks while striking out five over 3.1 shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea ultimately served as a piggyback to Jakob Junis, who started and pitched four scoreless innings. With just one run allowed over his last 15 innings (six appearances), Manaea is enjoying one of his best stretches of the season. He's trimmed his ERA to 4.89 with a 1.26 WHIP and 99:31 K:BB through 81 innings over 29 outings (six starts). The Giants continue to have rather fluid roles for many pitchers, including Manaea, who is unlikely to be available again until Sunday at the earliest.
Aug 9 2023Manaea allowed a run on a hit and a walk while striking out six over four-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was solid, but he gave up a leadoff double to Luis Rengifo to open the sixth inning. Tristan Beck entered the game and allowed an intentional walk, a single and a three-run home run to put a run on Manaea's line. Over his last five appearances, Manaea has given up one run, four hits and two walks while striking out 14 over 11.2 innings. He's at a 5.10 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 94:29 K:BB through 77.2 innings overall, and the southpaw will likely continue to be available as a bulk reliever.
Aug 1 2023Manaea retired both batters he faced to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea got a flyout and a pickoff to close out this contest for his first career save at any level of affiliated ball. The southpaw posted a mediocre 4.91 ERA over 18.1 innings across six appearances in July. He remains in a bulk-relief role as the Giants continue to use bullpen games to patch the holes in their rotation. Manaea has a 5.43 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 85:27 K:BB through 71.1 innings over 25 appearances (six starts) this year.
Jul 29 2023Manaea allowed two hits while striking out five over 4.2 scoreless innings in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea took over for opener Ryan Walker midway through the third inning and ended up blanking the Red Sox in 4.2 frames of work. The outing was a much-needed bounceback game for Manaea, who had allowed nine runs over his last three outings (10.2 innings). Through 70.2 innings this season, Manaea owns a 5.48 ERA and an 85:27 K:BB while primarily acting as a reliever.
Jun 30 2023Manaea (3-3) earned the win Friday over the Mets, allowing a hit and striking out one in a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea became the pitcher of record after Patrick Bailey's go-ahead home run in the eighth inning. It's a positive end to an otherwise rough month for Manaea, who has allowed nine runs over 15.2 innings across six appearances. He's been back in a traditional relief role over his last three outings after serving as a bulk reliever earlier in the month. For the season, the southpaw has a 5.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 67:22 K:BB through 52.1 innings over 18 appearances (six starts). With the Giants' rotation nearing full health again, he'll likely remain a reliever for the foreseeable future.
Jun 16 2023Manaea allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six over 3.2 innings in Friday's 7-5 extra-innings win over the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea has had a couple of good long-relief outings and a couple of shaky ones over his last four appearances, with Friday's being in the latter category. The Dodgers did all their damage against Manaea in the fifth inning. The southpaw is now at a 5.84 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 63:21 K:BB over 49.1 innings through 15 appearances (six starts) this season. With Alex Wood (back) likely to return Saturday, the Giants will have only one opening in their rotation, which Manaea has been filling with his long-relief assignments lately. He's tentatively projected to face the Padres at home in his next outing.
Jun 10 2023Manaea allowed zero hits and zero walks with one hit batter while striking out five over 4.1 innings in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Cubs. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea might have been in contention to start or serve as a bulk reliever in Sunday's series finale, but he's not in the mix after this 71-pitch outing. It was another sharp appearance for the southpaw, who has limited opponents to one run or less in five of his last six outings. He's now at a 5.52 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 57:20 K:BB over 45.2 innings through 14 appearances (six starts). It's unclear if Manaea has a path back to the rotation, but he's still considered for bulk-relief outings with the Giants missing both Ross Stripling and Alex Wood to back injuries.
Jun 6 2023Manaea allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over 4.2 innings Tuesday versus the Rockies. He did not factor in the decision but picked up a hold. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea started to get into some trouble in the seventh inning, but the Giants had built up enough of a lead to cruise to the win. Over his previous four appearances, he'd yielded just two runs (one earned) across 10.2 innings, but this was a modestly successful outing in Colorado for the struggling southpaw. He's at a 6.10 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 52:20 K:BB through 41.1 innings over 13 appearances (six starts) this season. Manaea's likely to continue in this bulk-relief role for his next projected appearance over the weekend versus the Cubs.
May 30 2023Manaea (2-3) allowed an unearned run on four hits and struck out three over four innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Rodolfo Castro to score the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, and the Giants couldn't pull even again. Over his last four outings, all in relief, Manaea has been solid, allowing two runs (one earned) over 10.2 innings with a 16:3 K:BB. It looks like the Giants are content with the southpaw working behind a bulk reliever for the foreseeable future. He's now at a 5.89 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 36.2 innings over 12 outings (six starts) this season. The Giants can get by with four starters for a while with off days Thursday and Monday, so Manaea should be available to mop up innings versus Baltimore this weekend or in Colorado next week.
May 22 2023Manaea (2-2) earned the win over Minnesota on Monday, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over 3.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was recently moved to the bullpen after struggling for much of the campaign, but he took on what amounted to nearly a full starting workload Monday, tossing 83 pitches over 3.2 frames. The southpaw somewhat struggled with his control and issued three walks, but he countered that by fanning eight batters, tying his season-high mark. Manaea will likely be down multiple days given his hefty pitch count, and he could move back into the rotation or continue to pitch bulk innings behind an opener with Ross Stripling (back) recently placed on the 15-day IL.
May 17 2023The Giants moved Manaea to the bullpen prior to Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Phillies, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was spotted warming up while the Giants were nursing a 4-2 lead in the eighth inning, but he ultimately went unused. At least in the short term, the Giants are likely to limit Manaea's usage to lower-leverage spots or lefty-on-lefty matchups after he's stumbled to a 7.96 ERA and 1.77 WHIP across 26 innings in his first eight outings (six starts) since signing a two-year, $25 million deal during the offseason. Ross Stripling will stick in the rotation over Manaea now that the Giants have five healthy starters again following Alex Wood's recent return from the injured list.
May 11 2023Manaea (1-2) took the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on five hits and three walks over 2.2 innings during an 11-6 loss to the Nationals. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea continues to struggle with his new team, posting a 7.96 ERA and 1.77 ERA over his first eight appearances (six starts) with the Giants. If the left-hander can't turn it around soon, he could be relegated to the bullpen when Alex Wood (hamstring) is activated off the 15-day injured list, which could come as soon as this weekend.
May 6 2023Manaea (1-1) earned the win Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings in a 6-4 victory over Milwaukee. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea finally earned a victory amid his nightmarish start to the season. The former Athletic now has a 7.33 ERA on the year as well as a hefty 1.63 WHIP. The southpaw should not be considered a reliable option until he strings together some quality starts. Friday was just the second time all season that Manaea hasn't given up a home run.
Apr 29 2023Manaea did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over two innings against the Padres. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea took a 107.6 mph line drive off his leg in the first inning. He managed to finish the frame, but he was out of the game after the second inning. The 31-year-old pitched 1.1 innings on Wednesday, setting up for Saturday's start to be short regardless. After allowing four earned runs while only recording six outs, Manaea's ERA is up to 7.85.
Apr 6 2023Manaea will start for the Giants on Saturday against the Royals, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea came out of the bullpen in his first appearance of the season Monday against the White Sox and gave up three earned runs on two hits and two walks over two innings of work. Now he steps into a rotation spot, at least for the time being. Giants manager Gabe Kapler has been noncommittal about steadily deploying a six-man starting mix.
Apr 2 2023Manaea could be used as a piggyback pitcher behind starter Anthony DeSclafani in Monday's game against the White Sox in Chicago, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Gabe Kapler hasn't specifically said that the Giants will maintain a six-man rotation, so Manaea looks as though he could be deployed in tandem with DeSclafani as the team aims to coax quality innings from both pitchers. Manaea had previously been available out of the bullpen for the team's season-opening series versus the Yankees, but he went unused in all three games and should thus be capable of covering multiple innings behind DeSclafani, if needed. After a rough season in San Diego in 2022, Manaea showed some improvement in spring training, as he pitched to a 4.08 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB in 17.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .215 average in Cactus League play.
Mar 14 2023Manaea has allowed six earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out 10 over eight innings through three Cactus League starts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's encouraging to see Manaea missing bats frequently, but what contact has been made against him has often landed for a hit. The 31-year-old southpaw is coming off of his worst season in the majors, in which he posted a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 158 innings for the Padres. The Giants have a solid track record of getting the most out of their pitchers, but it'll be on Manaea to pitch well enough to retain his spot in what's shaping up to be a crowded competition for a place in the rotation.
Dec 12 2022Manaea signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea will remain in the NL West after spending the 2022 campaign with the Padres, going 8-9 while posting a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 156 strikeouts over 158 innings in 30 appearances, including 28 starts. The 30-year-old will provide the Giants with another left-handed option in their starting rotation behind ace Logan Webb. In 2023, Manaea will look to bring his pitching numbers back down closer to his career 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP that he had produced over his first five seasons in the MLB prior to 2022.
Oct 4 2022Manaea (8-9) earned the win during Tuesday's 6-2 victory over San Francisco, allowing one hit and one walk with six strikeouts across six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea put the first two Giants he faced on base before retiring the next 18 batters in order to finish with a 75 game score -- his best mark since hist first start of the season April 8. The 29-year-old pounded the zone with 50 of an efficient 66 pitches going for strikes, and he undoubtedly would've worked deeper if a playoff appearances wasn't looming. Prior to Tuesday's victory, Manaea had gone 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA in 22 innings across his last six starts with San Diego falling in each contest. He concludes 2022 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP -- the worst and second-worst marks of his career respectively -- with 156 strikeouts in 158 innings across 28 starts and 30 appearances.
Sep 29 2022Manaea did not factor into the decision Thursday versus the Dodgers, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three and walking none in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea worked behind an opener Thursday, and the role appeared to suit him well. He'd given up five runs across his previous 8.2 innings entering the contest, but he had better results this time despite throwing only 38 of 62 pitches for strikes. The southpaw has a 5.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 150:49 K:BB across 152 innings through 29 outings this year, though his second-half struggles likely mean he'll operate out of the bullpen during the Padres' playoff run. He's tentatively set for one more regular-season outing next week versus the Giants.
Sep 24 2022Manaea gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings while striking out two in a 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Rockies on Friday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea couldn't make it out of the fourth inning, and he was pulled from the game after throwing 69 pitches. The 30-year-old left-hander has struggled immensely this season, and 2022 is shaping up to be his worst full season as a starter. Manaea's season-long ERA of 5.23 is the highest of his seven-year career. He is tentatively expected to make his next start in a tough matchup against the Dodgers.
Sep 16 2022Manaea (7-9) took the loss against Arizona on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out three batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea made his first start in nearly two weeks and pitched relatively well. Two of the hits he gave up were solo homers however, and that was more than enough to send the Padres to a loss on a night when they managed just three hits and zero runs. Manaea at least provided a positive takeaway after giving up 14 runs over 8.1 frames across his previous two starts, and he may be a key factor down the stretch as San Diego seeks to hold onto a wild-card spot.
Sep 14 2022Manaea is scheduled to start Thursday's series opener in Arizona, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was temporarily the odd man out of the rotation after the Padres condensed to four starters due to a pair of recent off days, but he'll be back on the mound while the Friars are in the midst of a stretch of six games in six days. During his brief exile from the rotation, Manaea made a one-inning relief appearance last weekend against the Dodgers, striking out two while allowing no runs on one hit and no walks.
Sep 5 2022Manaea will have his turn through the rotation skipped during the Padres' weekend series against the Dodgers, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea struggled mightily against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four in 4.1 innings. Since the Padres have a scheduled day off Thursday, the team will elect to skip his turn through the rotation. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw will be available out of the bullpen this weekend or when he'll ultimately make his next start for San Diego.
Sep 3 2022Manaea (7-8) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, surrendering eight runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four batters over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was in trouble from the get-go, falling behind 2-0 after two batters on a home run by Trea Turner. That was one of three long balls the southpaw gave up in the game, the last of which -- a Justin Turner two-run bomb in the fifth inning -- sent him to the showers. Manaea has been hit hard in each of his past two starts, giving up a combined 14 runs and 19 hits over 8.1 frames. His season ERA is up to 5.27, which is on pace to be the worst of his career.
Aug 29 2022Manaea (7-7) gave up six earned runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss in a 15-7 defeat against the Royals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea's struggles in the month of August continued with an abysmal appearance that saw him picked apart by hits and chased after 79 pitches. It was Manaea's worst start since Aug. 8, when he was pounded for eight runs by the Dodgers. He has now given up 21 earned runs over five starts this month and his season-long ERA has crept up to 4.90. The left-hander is tentatively expected to make his next start at the Dodgers.
Aug 21 2022Manaea (7-6) earned the win Sunday over the Nationals. He allowed a run on five hits and struck out four without walking a batter through seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was efficient in this win, throwing 51 of 69 pitches for strikes before the Padres went to the bullpen. Nelson Cruz's fourth-inning solo home run accounted for the lone run on Manaea's line. The 30-year-old southpaw had allowed multiple earned runs in 11 straight starts before Sunday's impressive start. He has a 4.64 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB across 130 innings through 23 starts this year. He's projected for a favorable road start in Kansas City next weekend.
Aug 16 2022Manaea allowed three runs on four hits and a walk, striking six in four innings in a 4-3 loss Tuesday in Miami. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nick Fortes tagged Manaea with solo homers in the second and fourth innings. The lefty was removed from the game after four innings, having tossed 64 pitches. It was his fifth straight outing of throwing 83 pitches or fewer. Since the All-Star break he has an 8.06 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and seven homers allowed in 22.1 innings across five outings.
Aug 10 2022Manaea allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings Wednesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was hit hard in the second and third inning, though he managed to tack on two scoreless frames to salvage a decent outing. It was a needed effort for Manaea, as he entered Wednesday's start having maintained a 6.60 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and a 47:19 K:BB across 45 innings and nine starts since June 14. For the season, Manaea now has a 4.76 ERA in 119 frames on the season.
Aug 6 2022Manaea (6-6) took the loss during Friday's 8-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea faced problem innings in the first and third, allowing four runs in each frame along with 10 of his 12 baserunners. The 30-year-old has hit a bit of a rough patch with a 7.14 ERA across 29 innings in six starts since the end of June, with the one bright side being seven strikeouts and at least 13 swinging strikes in each of his last two turns. Manaea now possesses a 4.74 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 118 strikeouts in 114 innings across 20 starts. He lines up to take the mound again midweek against the Giants.
Jul 31 2022Manaea (6-5) earned the win during Sunday's 3-2 victory over Minnesota, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea navigated the first four frames unscathed but ran into trouble thereafter, surrendering solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings while stranding the bases loaded in the fifth. The 30-year-old fired 56 of 83 pitches for strikes with an impressive 13 of the swinging variety while the seven strikeouts match his best total across his last nine turns. Manaea now possesses a 4.25 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 111 strikeouts in 110 innings across 19 starts. He's currently scheduled to take the mound again next weekend against the Dodgers.
Jul 25 2022Manaea (5-5) allowed nine runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk over 3.1 frames Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea turned in a pair of scoreless frames before coughing up five runs in the third inning, including a grand slam by Eric Haase. The 30-year-old lefty was tagged with four more runs in the fourth, including a leadoff shot by Jeimer Candelario. It was the fourth time this year that Manaea's given up two homers in a start and the first time since June 14. His ERA is up to 4.33 with a 104:39 through 18 appearances. Manaea is lined up to face the Twins at home this weekend.
Jul 16 2022Manaea (5-4) earned the win Saturday versus the Diamondbacks. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea gave up five extra-base hits, including an RBI triple to Buddy Kennedy in the fourth inning and a two-run home run to Carson Kelly in the fifth. Despite the hard contact, Manaea limited the damage well and earned his fourth quality start in his last five outings. He heads into the All-Star break with wins in consecutive starts for the first time this year. The southpaw owns a 4.11 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 100:38 K:BB across 100.2 innings in 17 games.
Jul 11 2022Manaea (4-4) earned the win Monday over the Rockies. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea gave up a sacrifice fly to C.J. Cron and a solo home run to Randal Grichuk. That was all the damage on Manaea's line, making this an encouraging bounce-back effort after he lasted just 3.1 innings in a loss to the Mariners last Monday. The southpaw has 12 quality starts in 16 outings, and he owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 97:36 K:BB across 94.2 innings this season. He's projected for one more start before the All-Star break, which would be a home date against the Diamondbacks this weekend.
Jul 4 2022Manaea (3-4) took the loss during Monday's 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea surrendered four baserunners and two runs in the first inning then another five and two in the fourth before being pulled with one out and the bases loaded. Reliever Taylor Scott was able to escape the jam, however Manaea still tied his season low with a 27 game score. The 30-year-old found the zone with 38 of his 71 pitches and induced just four swinging strikes in tying another season worst with three strikeouts. Manaea carries a 4.18 ERA into his next start, projected to come early next week in Colorado.
Jun 28 2022Manaea allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven in six-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea threw six shutout innings before running into trouble in the seventh. The Padres' bullpen fared no better in the late innings, which ultimately cost Manaea the win as he took a third straight no-decision. The southpaw owns a 3.92 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 89:31 K:BB through 85 innings in 14 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Mariners next week as he looks to get back into the win column.
Jun 21 2022Manaea allowed two runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts in six innings versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea allowed a two-run inside-the-park home run to Jordan Luplow in the third inning, but that was the extent of Arizona's offense. It was a solid bounce-back for Manaea after he allowed five runs in his previous start. He's now logged quality starts in 10 of his 13 appearances, though he's yet to post more than three such outings in a row. For the season, he's at a 3.87 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 82:28 K:BB across 79 innings. The southpaw is projected for a rematch in Arizona next week.
Jun 15 2022Manaea was charged with five earned runs on eight hits and a walk over four innings in a 12-5 victory over the Cubs on Tuesday. He struck out five and did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was roughed up by the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The damage was done early by Willson Contreras, who homered twice and drove in three runs over his first two at-bats. Manaea threw only 72 pitches before Padres manager Bob Melvin had seen enough and went to the bullpen. Manaea is still pitching in line with his preseason expectations, and despite his elevated 3.95 ERA, he has an attractive 9.4 K/9 and serviceable 1.15 WHIP. His next start is expected to be Tuesday against Arizona.
Jun 9 2022Manaea (3-3) earned the win against the Mets on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres racked up 11 runs through the first five innings of the contest, allowing Manaea to hit cruise control as he evened his season record at 3-3. The southpaw wasn't overpowering in the performance -- he notched a season-low three strikeouts -- but that didn't prevent him from finishing with his third straight quality start. Manaea has been an excellent addition for San Diego this season, posting a 3.52 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 9.3 K/9 over 69 innings thus far.
Jun 3 2022Manaea did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over six innings against the Brewers. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea notched his sixth straight quality start and his ninth of the season. The left-hander was lights-out and on pace for the win, but a poor ninth inning from Padres' relievers cost San Diego a win. Across 10 starts this year, Manaea sports a 3.77 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP with a 68:21 K:BB across 62.0 innings. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday's matchup with the Mets.
May 28 2022Manaea completed seven innings against Pittsburgh on Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea struggled a bit with his control, tying a season high with three walks and throwing 62 of 98 pitches for strikes. However, the left-hander was able to go deep into the game and notch his seventh quality start over nine outings this season. Manaea is expected to make his next start in Milwaukee late next week.
May 21 2022Manaea didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 8-7 win over San Francisco, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea pitched well to every Giant aside from Darin Ruf, who accounted for three of the four runs against the lefty with two home runs. After a scorching stretch to open the campaign, the 30-year-old has been pedestrian over his last five outings with a 5.70 ERA across 30 innings. A 3.41 xFIP indicates Manaea's 4.04 ERA has been a product of some poor luck, and he'll look to get back in the win column for the first time since April 18 in his next start.
May 14 2022Manaea struck out 12 batters in seven innings Saturday against Atlanta, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Atlanta bats didn't manage to hit Manaea often, but they did some damage when they were able to get a piece of the ball. Matt Olson hit a solo homer in the first inning, while Ozzie Albies hit an RBI double in the third. Adam Duvall later walked to lead off the eighth inning and came around to score on an Albies single after Manaea left the game. Manaea now owns a career-high 28.7 percent strikeout rate to go along with his 3.77 ERA.
May 7 2022Manaea (2-3) took the loss during Saturday's 8-0 defeat at the hands of the Marlins, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea limited the damage to a solo home run early but permitted a two-run double to Garrett Cooper in the fifth inning to fall in line for the loss. The 30-year-old has hit a bit of a rough patch of late, surrendering 12 runs over his last 17 innings across three starts, whereas those marks were three runs through 19 innings in his first three turns. Manaea carries a 3.75 ERA into a projected start against Atlanta next weekend.
May 1 2022Manaea allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings against Pittsburgh on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw allowed a run in the first inning and two more in the fifth but pitched well overall in notching his fourth quality start of the campaign. Manaea threw a season-high 110 pitches -- the first time he has crossed the 100-pitch threshold this season -- and didn't allow any homers for the first time in three starts. He'll likely make his next start at home against Miami next weekend.
Apr 24 2022Manaea (2-2) took the loss during Sunday's 10-2 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Manaea's first poor outing with his new team, as he permitted runs in each inning except the second and departed with the bases loaded and the game at a respectable 4-1. Reliever Dinelson Lamet allowed all three inherited runners and one additional to score and put the game out of reach. Manaea's ERA jumped more than two full runs from 1.42 to 3.47 due to the blow-up, and he'll look to rebound against Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Apr 18 2022Manaea (2-1) earned the win over Cincinnati on Monday, hurling six innings during which he gave up one run on six hits and two walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea walked two hitters but was very efficient in getting the ball over the plate, recording first-pitch strikes to 21 of 26 batters and throwing just 18 balls across 78 pitches. The southpaw registered his third straight quality start --- the most in the league -- to begin the campaign after recording 15 such efforts across 32 starts last season. Manaea is off to a blazing beginning with the Padres, posting a 1.42 ERA, 19:5 K:BB and 2-1 record over three starts. His next appearance is expected to be a tough home matchup against the Dodgers on Sunday.
Apr 13 2022Manaea (1-1) struck out six in six innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks in a 2-1 loss Wednesday in San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea pitched well in his second start of the season and held the Giants in check outside of a two-out, two-run double in the second inning by Luke Williams. Unfortunately for Manaea, Logan Webb was dominant and the Padres were unable to provide much in the form of run support. His next start will likely come early next week against Cincinnati.
Apr 8 2022Manaea (1-0) got the win in Friday's 3-0 triumph over Arizona, spinning seven no-hit innings while allowing no runs with one walk and seven strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was nearly flawless Friday, with a Daulton Varsho second inning walk being the only knock on his ledger. Additionally, the lefty was efficient in requiring just 88 pitches, 66 for strikes, to navigate 21 outs. He'll look to keep the momentum going in San Francisco on Wednesday.
Apr 3 2022Manaea and pitcher Aaron Holiday were acquired by the Padres from the Athletics on Sunday in exchange for infielder Euribiel Angeles and pitcher Adrian Martinez, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It appeared Manaea may remain in Oakland to begin the season despite constant trade rumors, but he's now been dealt to San Diego with less than a week before Opening Day. The 30-year-old southpaw joins a rotation that already includes Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger, as the NL West continues to stack up talent. Manaea posted a 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 194:41 K:BB over 179.1 innings last year and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2022 campaign.
Mar 29 2022Manaea recorded seven strikeouts and allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk over 5.2 innings during a Cactus League loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was in midseason form as his numbers indicate, making it two straight strong performances for Manaea after a rocky spring debut against the Reds back on March 19. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports Manaea retired nine straight hitters at one point in a Dodgers lineup replete with regulars, recorded all seven of his punchouts on swinging strikes and was especially effective with his slider. "My sliders over the past two games have just gotten better and better," Manaea said. "I feel like I'm really starting to rip it and not worried about placing it somewhere and trying to make it do something. I just get my grip and let it go."
Mar 24 2022Manaea allowed an earned run on a hit and a walk over 4.2 innings in a Cactus League loss to the Rangers on Thursday. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea turned in the longest outing yet for an Athletics starter this spring, throwing a total of 57 pitches, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The left-hander got first-pitch strikes on 11 of the 17 batters he faced and got 35 of his offerings into the strike zone overall, noting afterwards that he was particularly pleased with his fastball command despite the pitch regularly sitting between 88 and 90 mph during his outing.
Mar 22 2022Manaea agreed to a one-year, $9.75 million contract with Oakland on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Trade rumors continue to swirl regarding Manaea given Oakland has already offloaded some core players, but the left-hander was able to agree on a deal for 2022 with the A's. He had a 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 194:41 K:BB over 179.1 innings last season, and it remains to be seen how long he remains in Oakland while entering his final year before hitting free agency.
Mar 19 2022Even with trade rumors surrounding Sean Manaea, he is focusing on getting ready for the regular season, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Athletics trading away their core players, Manaea could be on the move next. In Manaea's first outing of Spring Training, he allowed five hits, five earned runs, and one walk with one strikeout in 1.1 innings. After a career-high 179.1 innings in 2021, Manaea's sinker velocity averaged at 92.1 mph, which was the highest since 2016 (92.9 mph). With that increased velocity, the sinker elicited a career-best 10.7% SwStr%, plus two other pitches with double-digit SwStr% in the changeup (16.5%) and slider (11.7%).
Oct 1 2021Manaea (11-10) got the win in Friday's 8-6 victory over the Astros, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea permitted the first two Houston batters to reach base with one crossing the plate in the first inning but settled down thereafter to only surrender one more run in the sixth inning and fall one out short of a quality start. The 29-year-old lefty has now allowed two or fewer runs in four of six September starts and concludes the campaign with an 11-10 record in 32 starts with a 3.87 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 194:41 K:BB.
Sep 21 2021Manaea (10-10) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Mariners after allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk while fanning three across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea has been struggling of late and has given up nine runs across his last two starts (10 innings), but the lack of effectiveness on the mound isn't anything new -- he has given up three or more runs in six of his last nine appearances since the beginning of August. Manaea, who only has two quality starts in that span, has also posted a 6.95 ERA with a 1.55 WHIP over 44 innings in that stretch.
Sep 15 2021Manaea (10-9) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out three across five innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea wasn't particularly sharp, though the only extra-base hit he surrendered was a solo home run by Salvador Perez. The majority of the damage against him came in the fourth inning, when he allowed three consecutive singles to begin the frame. Manaea has mostly struggled since August began, as he now has a 6.49 ERA across seven starts and 34.2 innings in that span. That's inflated his ERA on the season to 3.95 across 161.2 frames.
Sep 9 2021Manaea (9-9) earned the win Thursday after holding the White Sox to one run on five hits and a walk while striking out nine across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw displayed strong command en route to his ninth win, recording nine punchouts for the second straight game to earn his 14th quality start of the year. Manaea's only blemish of the day came from an RBI single by Jose Abreu in the third inning. The 29-year-old will look to continue his success during his next projected start Wednesday at Kansas City.
Sep 4 2021Manaea didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 11-10 loss to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out nine without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty seemed to be cruising to his ninth win of the season, exiting after 86 pitches (64 strikes) with a comfortable 8-2 lead, but the Oakland bullpen imploded behind him. Manaea still delivered his 13th quality start of the season, and he sports a 3.91 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and sparkling 165:36 K:BB through 149.2 innings.
Sep 1 2021Manaea will start Friday's game against the Blue Jays, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was slated to start Thursday, but he'll switch spots in the rotation with Frankie Montas, who apparently had some visa concerns ahead of the trip to Canada. Manaea has a 9.90 ERA over his past five starts and will attempt to get back on track in Toronto.
Aug 27 2021Manaea (8-9) allowed five runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea cruised through three scoreless innings before the Yankees' bats woke up. He gave up solo homers to Giancarlo Stanton and Luke Voit in the fourth inning and was knocked out of the game after a three-run blast by Aaron Judge in the fifth. Over his last five starts, the 29-year-old owns a 9.90 ERA over 20 innings while giving up eight home runs. Manaea's season ERA is up to 3.97 with a 156:36 K:BB. Still looking for his first win since July, he's projected to take the mound in Detroit next week.
Aug 21 2021Manaea allowed two runs on four hits, three walks and two hit batters while striking out three in 4.2 innings versus San Francisco on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea wasn't hit as hard as he's been in his last few starts, but the two hit batters made things more difficult for the southpaw. He's endured a horrid August, allowing 17 runs across 15.2 innings his last four starts. The skid has inflated his ERA to 3.77 with a 1.24 WHIP and 151:36 K:BB across 138.1 innings overall. He'll attempt to right the ship against a surging Yankees team during next weekend's four-game series.
Aug 10 2021Manaea allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts through 1.2 innings, taking a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On an extremely humid night in Cleveland, Manaea struggled dearly with his command. Despite pulverizing the rosin bag in search of any iota of extra grip, the left-hander needed 69 pitches to get five outs and worked himself into five full counts. While this is the second consecutive rough outing for the 29-year-old, the conditions played a huge part in Tuesday night's meltdown. Manaea and fantasy managers alike will be glad to know that his next start will come in the climate-controlled confines of Globe Life Field against the lowly Rangers on Sunday.
Aug 4 2021Manaea (8-7) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Padres after allowing five runs on eight hits while fanning four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea started the game by giving up a solo shot to Tommy Pham, and that would set the tone for the rest of his outing. He was unable to get out of the fifth inning, and the five runs he allowed represented his highest mark since he gave up seven runs across two frames back on May 13 against the Red Sox. Manaea has given up at least three earned runs in four of his last six outings, but he still owns a solid 3.26 ERA on the season.
Jul 29 2021Manaea (8-6) earned the win Wednesday over the Padres after tossing six scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk while fanning nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea tossed a second straight quality start and has dazzled of late, allowing just one run on four hits while posting a 22:4 K:BB across his last 13 innings of work. The southpaw owns an excellent 2.18 ERA since the beginning of June.
Jul 23 2021Manaea (7-6) earned the win Thursday against the Mariners after allowing one run on three hits and three walks while fanning 13 across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 13 strikeouts represented a season-high for Manaea, and it was also the third time this season in which he struck out at least 10 batters. The left-hander has fanned at least six in six straight outings, a span in which he has posted three quality starts and where he owns a 3.57 ERA through 35.1 innings. His next start is scheduled for next week on the road against the Padres.
Jul 16 2021Manaea took the no-decision in Friday's 5-4 win over Cleveland, allowing three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea held Cleveland scoreless through four innings but allowed a Roberto Perez solo home run in the fifth and permitted three baserunners and one run in the sixth before departing. The lefty broke out of his four-start losing streak and has now allowed three runs or less in 10 of his last 11 starts, pitching to a 3.28 ERA on the season.
Jul 7 2021Manaea (6-6) allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out six across 6.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was undone by two home runs, with a three-run shot by Jose Altuve being the big blow. However, he was fairly solid otherwise and was able to work deep into the game to offset the damage. Though he's now taken a loss in each of of his last four outings, Manaea has maintained a 3.91 ERA with 30 strikeouts across 23 innings in that span. Overall, he has a 3.19 ERA with a 108:25 K:BB across 104.1 frames on the campaign.
Jul 1 2021Manaea (6-5) took the loss Thursday against Texas, allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk over five innings. He had six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Home runs by Nate Lowe in the fourth inning and Joey Gallo in the fifth broke things open for the Rangers, who managed to put 10 runners on base against Manaea on the day. It was the third straight loss for the lefty despite a 24:6 KK:BB over 16.1 innings during that stretch. Manaea will take a 3.13 ERA and 1.24 WHIP into his next scheduled start, projected to come next week in Houston.
Jun 25 2021Manaea (6-4) suffered the loss against San Francisco on Friday despite allowing only one run on three hits and three walks across six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander pitched well in the battle of Bay Area teams, but he was outdueled by Giants starter Johnny Cueto, who held Oakland scoreless over seven frames. Manaea finished with his seventh straight start of three or fewer runs, and he has lowered his ERA from 4.40 to 2.91 since a disastrous two-inning, seven-run appearance against Boston on May 13. He is on pace for a career-best 9.3 K/9 and 0.8 HR/9, helping him to his finest campaign to date. Manaea's next start is lined up to come at home against the Rangers next week.
Jun 20 2021Manaea (6-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out 11 in 5.1 innings to take the loss against the Yankees on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had earned wins in each of his last three starts, and he allowed one run in 20.2 innings during that time. Although he racked up a season-high 11 strikeouts Sunday, he couldn't get enough run support from the Athletics in the low-scoring contest. The southpaw has now posted a 3.01 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 86.2 innings this year. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against San Francisco on Friday.
Jun 14 2021Manaea (6-2) allowed one run on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings Monday, striking out five and earning a win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had to escape threats with multiple base runners in the first, second and fourth innings, but the only run to score against him was a solo shot by Juan Lagares. Despite it not being his most effective outing, the 29-year-old earned his third straight win and has allowed one or fewer runs in each of his last five appearances. He lowered his season ERA to a solid 2.99 alongside a 78:19 K:BB. Manaea is lined up to face the Yankees on the road this weekend.
Jun 9 2021Manaea (5-2) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out three in six scoreless innings, earning the win in Wednesday's 4-0 victory over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty entered an enticing matchup (at home against the Diamondbacks) and didn't disappoint. Manaea labored a bit through the first couple innings, but made it through six innings on 111 pitches and lowered his ERA to 3.09. He's been superb of late, having allowed just two earned runs over 26.2 innings in his last four starts, and is expected to next pitch Monday against the Angels.
Jun 3 2021Manaea (4-2) earned the win over Seattle on Wednesday, hurling nine scoreless frames while allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was technically Manaea's second shutout of the season -- he tossed seven scoreless innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Twins in April. The southpaw was sharp Wednesday, inducing 19 swinging strikes and holding the Mariners without an extra-base hit. Over his past three starts, Manaea has allowed only two runs in 20.2 frames while posting a 22:7 K:BB. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is lined up to come at home against Arizona next week.
May 29 2021Manaea hurled 6.2 innings against the Angels on Friday, yielding one run on six hits and three walks while striking out eight. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw was impressive in the outing, keeping the Angels from scoring until the seventh frame. Opposing pitcher Shohei Ohtani put up a strong performance of his own, however, preventing Manaea from ending up in the win column. Still, it was a promising outing for Manaea, who racked up 17 swinging strikes en route to his sixth quality start of the season. He is tentatively slated to make his next start at Seattle on Wednesday.
May 24 2021Manaea allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings against the Angels on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea held the Angels' hitters in check over five innings. The only run scored against him came in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Jared Walsh. It was a much-needed performance for the 29-year-old Manaea after a pair of rough outings in which he was lit up for 10 runs on 20 hits over eight combined innings. He'll take a 4.17 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 54:11 K:BB over 54 innings into his next start.
May 19 2021Manaea allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out three across six innings Tuesday against the Astros. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea survived with a quality start despite surrendering 10 hits -- including two doubles and a solo home run. He wasn't deceiving opposing hitters, as he generated only seven swinging strikes across 91 total pitches. Manaea maintains a 4.41 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 49 innings this season, but has allowed double-digit hitters to reach base in each of his last two outings while racking up only five strikeouts across eight combined frames. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, projected to come Sunday at the Angels.
May 14 2021Manaea (3-2) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Red Sox after giving up seven runs on 10 hits and a walk while fanning two across two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had his worst outing of the season by a wide margin, as he had recorded six straight starts of at least five innings but ended that streak abruptly here -- he pitched his shortest outing of the campaign while recording a season-worst mark in hits and runs allowed, and his two strikeouts represent a season-low figure as well. The left-hander will attempt to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for next week at home against the Astros.
May 7 2021Manaea completed 7.1 innings against Tampa Bay on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out 10. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For six innings, Manaea looked like he could be in for a special night, as the southpaw retired 18 straight Rays batters. The potential perfect game came to an end on a leadoff walk in the seventh inning, but Manaea still entered the eighth with a no-hitter intact. Tampa Bay quickly struck for a run on a double and a single, however, and Manaea soon exited the game with no chance for a win. Despite the disappointing ending, there was plenty to like about the veteran hurler's performance; among other highlights, he struck out a season-high 10 batters notched his fourth quality start of the campaign. Manaea has now given up one or fewer runs in four of his seven starts, leading to a steady 3.07 ERA. His next start will likely take place in Boston on Thursday.
May 2 2021Manaea didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Orioles. He allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out five across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea ended his winning streak at three starts, and this outing was a step in the wrong direction given how good he'd been pitching of late -- he had allowed a combined four earned runs over his previous 24 innings (four starts) before Sunday's appearance. The left-hander owns a strong 3.48 ERA, however, and he will try to return to the winning ways in his next scheduled start -- tabbed for next week at home against the Rays.
Apr 26 2021Manaea (3-1) picked up the win Monday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings in a 2-1 victory over the Rays. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty won his third straight decision but wasn't efficient enough to rack up his fourth straight quality start, exiting the game after 100 pitches (61 strikes). Manaea will take a 2.83 ERA and 28:7 K:BB through 28.2 innings into his next outing Saturday at home against the Orioles.
Apr 20 2021Manaea (2-1) picked up the win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins, allowing six hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Only two runners even got past second base against the southpaw, who tossed 66 of 95 pitches for strikes while going the distance. Manaea will carry a 3.04 ERA and 22:5 K:BB through 23.2 innings into his next start, set for Monday in Tampa Bay.
Apr 15 2021Manaea (1-1) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven over six innings in Thursday's win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty was dealing Thursday, fanning seven en route to recording a quality start. The 29-year-old threw 58 of his 82 pitches for strikes and has allowed eight runs in 16.2 innings of work. Manaea is scheduled for his next start on Tuesday against the Twins.
Apr 9 2021Manaea tossed six innings against the Astros on Friday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea rebounded from a rough first start against the same Astros club, during which he yielded five earned runs and didn't get out of the fifth inning. The southpaw was much more effective the second time around, allowing only a fourth-inning run and making it through six frames. Manaea is next lined up to face Detroit at home next Friday.
Apr 4 2021Manaea (0-1) picked up the loss Sunday against the Astros, allowing five runs on six hits in 4.2 innings, striking out four while walking three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros' bats were going all series, as they scored 35 runs in 36 innings, and Manaea couldn't do anything to slow them down. They got on him right away, scoring in each of the first three innings. Kyle Tucker hit a solo shot in the first, while Jason Castro followed up with a two-run homer in the second. Yuli Gurriel added two more with a third-inning double. It's a disappointing beginning to the season for Manaea, who started last year slowly as well, struggling to a 9.00 ERA in his first four starts. He'll face the Astros again in his second start of the year, which should come in Houston on Friday.
Mar 30 2021Manaea allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks over 3.1 innings in a Cactus League loss to the Giants on Monday. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As his final line indicates, Manaea's control wasn't in top form, but Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports the left-hander was able to close out his spring slate on a high note by retiring the side in the fourth after reentering the game following a third-inning exit. Despite some wildness Monday, the veteran finished Cactus League play with a 3-1 mark and 17 strikeouts over 15.1 innings.
Mar 25 2021Manaea was credited with his third win of spring in Wednesday's Cactus League victory over the White Sox, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, two walks and two hit batsmen across 5.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander worked up to just under 80 pitches while facing a dangerous White Sox lineup that boasted plenty of regulars. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports both Manaea and manager Bob Melvin came away pleased with the veteran's ability to consistently pound his fastball inside, as well as the movement on his slider, in what was slated to be the pitcher's penultimate Cactus League start. "He was good again," Melvin said. "He used all his pitches. We're just trying to get his pitch count up and he continues to improve and pitch better."
Mar 18 2021Manaea did not suffer an injury after being struck by a line drive during his start Thursday, Alex Coffey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was hit on his throwing elbow by a line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer. However, he continued to pitch after being checked on by the trainer and told the media after the game there is no injury besides a bruise. Manaea has had a strong spring training to this point, racking up a 9:3 K:BB across 6.2 innings.
Mar 14 2021Manaea, who allowed an earned run on three hits and a walk while recording four strikeouts over three innings in a Cactus League win over the Reds on Saturday, saw his fastball top out at 94 mph during the outing, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The radar-gun reading is particularly relevant when considering Manaea's velocity was down in recent seasons as he focused on improving his command. Manaea was able to combine both power and location consistently Saturday, and his ability to keep the fastball at no less than 93 mph was partly a testament to an offseason workout regimen that focused on mobility and durability.
Feb 25 2021Manaea is already looking more confident and efficient with his pre-delivery movement during early bullpen sessions after some targeted offseason training, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw went into the offseason with some momentum after going 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA over his final seven regular-season starts, and he got right to working on improving certain physical and mental aspects of his game. Manaea worked with a trainer on improving mobility and durability that strengthened his internal abductors, leading to what appears to be improved mechanics. The 29-year-old also put in time with mental performance coach and former college teammate Tyler Pazik to sharpen his confidence and killer instinct on the mound, a resource he plans to continue availing himself of during the regular season.
Jan 15 2021Manaea signed a one-year, $5.95 million deal with Oakland on Friday to avoid arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two sides were able to reach a deal ahead of Friday's deadline, and the left-hander is now officially under contract for 2021. Manaea had a 4.50 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 45:8 K:BB over 54 innings during 2020 and should enter spring training as a member of the starting rotation.
Oct 6 2020Manaea took the loss in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Astros after allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander allowed three runs over the third and fourth innings and exited after surrendering a solo homer to Martin Maldonado during the fifth. Manaea will need to hope the A's can overcome a 2-0 series deficit to have a chance of receiving another start.
Sep 23 2020Manaea did not factor into the decision during Wednesday's win over the Dodgers, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The long ball was the enemy of the night for Manaea, who silenced the Dodgers until the third inning, when he released a two-run homer to Max Muncy. He also gave up a solo blast to Cody Bellinger in the seventh frame, which would be his final batter of the night. Manea threw a season-high 91 pitches, including 59 for strikes. The 28-year-old, who has been named a likely candidate to start the Athletics' first playoff game next week, has put together a 4.50 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 12 appearances (11 starts) in the regular season. Across his last six starts, however, the southpaw has compiled a solid 2.65 ERA.
Sep 22 2020Manaea, who is scheduled to make his final start of the regular season Wednesday against the Dodgers, is a likely candidate to also start the Athletics' first playoff game next week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gallegos notes Manaea's strong work since mid-August -- he owns a 4-1 record, 2.45 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across his last six starts -- makes him the best option at manager Bob Melvin's disposal as the postseason approaches. The left-hander found himself in a similar position last season, as he put together a 4-0 September after returning from a shoulder injury and was named the starter for the AL Wild Card Game against the Rays, an outing in which he allowed three home runs over two innings in what was a 5-1 Athletics loss.
Sep 15 2020Manaea (4-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven over 5.2 innings in a loss to the Rockies on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea wasn't bad Tuesday, but he didn't get a lot of support from the Athletics' offense. The loss snapped his personal four-game winning streak. The 28-year-old southpaw has a 4.50 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 48 innings this season. Manaea will look to avoid a skid when he faces the Dodgers next Tuesday.
Sep 10 2020Manaea (4-2) picked up the win Thursday against Houston, allowing one run on two hits while striking out four across seven innings. He did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was beyond efficient in Thursday's outing, tossing just 61 pitches while allowing two hits and no walks over seven frames. He retired the first 15 hitters he faced before allowing a run on a pair of hits in the sixth. The southpaw certainly could have gone deeper into the tilt, but Oakland manager Bob Melvin opted to hand the final two innings to Jake Diekman and Liam Hendriks, likely due to the fact that both relievers are enjoying fantastic campaigns. After a poor start to his season, Manaea has now won each of his last four starts while allowing just six earned runs across 27.1 innings. He will look to stay on a roll when he takes the ball Tuesday in Colorado.
Sep 6 2020Manaea (3-2) allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out five over five innings to earn the win against the Padres on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea's season got off to a bit of a rough start, but he's since rebounded and has picked up wins in each of his last three outings. The southpaw got into a jam in the third inning Saturday when the Padres loaded the bases with one out, but he only allowed one run to come across. He has a 5.09 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 35.1 innings this season. Manaea will carry his winning streak into his next start at home Thursday against the Astros.
Aug 25 2020Manaea (2-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits over five innings, earning the win Tuesday versus the Rangers. He struck out three and walked none. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was solid in Tuesday's game, and he can't be blamed for Marcus Semien's fifth-inning error that indirectly led to a pair of runs for the Rangers. It's the third straight start where Manaea has allowed three runs or fewer after failing to do that in his first four starts of the year. He has a 5.64 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 25 strikeouts across 30.1 innings. The 28-year-old southpaw is expected to make his next start Sunday in Houston.
Aug 21 2020Manaea (1-2) earned the win Thursday against the Diamondbacks after tossing 5.1 innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and fanning four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea allowed three or more runs in each of his first four starts of the season, but he is beginning to trend in the right direction of late -- he has pitched at least five innings in his past two outings, allowing four runs (three earned) in 10.1 innings during that two-game stretch. It's still far from convincing and well below Manaea's usual numbers, but the encouraging signs are noticeable. His next start is scheduled for Aug. 25 on the road against the Rangers.
Aug 15 2020Manaea hurled five innings against San Francisco on Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea tossed the most innings (five) and allowed the fewest earned runs (two) among his five starts this season, but he was unable to emerge with his first win. The southpaw yielded all three runs in the fourth inning, when he gave up a walk and a pair of hits to the frame's first three batters. Manaea has stumbled with a 7.65 ERA and 1.60 WHIP through his first five starts. He'll look to make his way into the win column when he faces Arizona on Thursday in his next scheduled start.
Aug 11 2020Manaea didn't factor into the decision in Monday's contest between the Athletics and the Angels. He allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while fanning one in 2.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea has not completed five innings in any of his four starts and has been struggling so far, giving up four earned runs in three of those outings. Things have not gone as expected for the 28-year-old, who owns a 9.00 ERA and 1.87 WHIP -- both career-worst marks by a wide margin -- ahead of this next scheduled start Aug. 16 at San Francisco.
Aug 5 2020Manaea allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over 3.1 innings versus the Rangers on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was on the hook for the loss until Austin Allen hit a go-ahead homer for the Athletics in the seventh inning. The 28-year-old Manaea has struggled to mitigate the scoring in his three starts this year -- he's got an 8.03 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 12.1 innings. The southpaw will try to right the ship Monday on the road against the Angels.
Jul 31 2020Manaea (0-2) was charged with the loss against the Mariners on Friday after surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits and striking out four across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Much like his last outing, Manaea came out strong for a few innings before suddenly losing his command. The 28-year-old retired the first nine batters until the fourth frame, when Seattle unleashed four hits, including a two-run double by Kyle Seager and an RBI single by Austin Nola. The Mariners continued to chip away in the fifth with another pair of hits before Manaea was pulled. Both his baserunners soon scored (unearned) runs at the hands of a throwing error by reliever J.B. Wendelken. On the bright side, Manaea did not issue any walks. The southpaw has now given up nine runs (seven earned) across nine innings so far this year. He'll look to bounce back Wednesday against Texas.
Jul 25 2020Manaea (0-1) was tagged with the loss during Saturday's 4-1 defeat against the Angels. He allowed four runs on five hits while fanning three in just 4.2 innings of work. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea couldn't complete the fifth inning and left the contest after giving up three runs on back-to-back RBI doubles to Andrelton Simmons and David Fletcher. Manaea will attempt to bounce back in his upcoming start on the road against the Mariners on July 31.
Jul 21 2020Manaea, who allowed three runs on four hits and recorded four strikeouts over five innings in Monday's exhibition loss to the Giants, came away very pleased with his slider, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "I thought it was awesome," Manaea said of the slider. "Judging everything on how it looked from my perspective and how the swings looked, I'm pretty close to being able to backdoor it and just pitch off of that. For now, I'm extremely happy with how it's turned out and how I feel with it." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was able to retire the final 10 batters he faced after an uneven performance over the first pair of frames, and he came very close to his target of 65 pitches. Gallegos reports Manaea deployed the slider on 22 occasions overall Monday, continuing a focus on developing the pitch that dates back to spring training. The left-hander did top out at just 89 mph with his fastball, but Manaea shrugged off the middling velocity by expressing confidence in his ability to overcome it with good pitch sequencing. The 28-year-old lines up to make his first regular-season start Saturday against the Angels in the second installment of the season-opening four-game set, and he's expected to be limited to 75-85 pitches.
Jul 17 2020Manaea has been named the starter for Monday's exhibition game against the Giants, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea is arguably considered a co-ace of the staff alongside the hard-throwing Frankie Montas, but this news furthers the notion the latter will get the Opening Night call next Friday against the Angels. Manaea will tune up for what is likely a start in the second game of the season July 25 by opening Monday evening's exhibition at the Oakland Coliseum, although Melvin emphasized "things could change leading up" to next week.
Jul 6 2020Manaea, who is fully participating in the Athletics' summer camp workouts, is considering using a mask during games this season, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "I might use a face mask," Manaea said. "I don't know if we're required to wear it on the field, but I might as well just try it out and see what it's like. At least for a game." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old is considered the de facto ace of the Athletics' staff after putting together a dominant five-game sample at the end of 2019 following his return from shoulder surgery. Manaea explains he'd consider using the mask not only for his own safety, but with the hopes it will encourage other players to wear one as well. The southpaw was able to maintain a regular throwing program in the Arizona area while play was paused, and he feels he's at the point where he can throw the equivalent of about three innings, a level he'll look to build up from in forthcoming intrasquad games.
Apr 13 2020Manaea posted a 14.09 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and .378 BAA across 7.2 innings over three Cactus League appearances before spring training was suspended. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The unsightly numbers over the small sample belie the fact Manaea actually got some productive work in before play was paused. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports the left-hander diligently worked on developing his slider with the help of the legendary Randy Johnson, and he did manage to record 10 strikeouts despite also pitching to plenty of contact at times. The refining of a pitch always carries the potential of generating some ugly spring lines, so the southpaw's struggles could at least be partly attributed to his attempt to augment his arsenal.
Mar 7 2020Manaea recorded six strikeouts and allowed four earned runs on four hits over three innings in a Cactus League split-squad loss to the Reds on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The line underscores what a mixed bag Manaea's start was, but the left-hander, who continued to refine his slider during the outing, was pleased with the work he got in, noting he "made some competitive pitches and they [Indians hitters] took some good swings on them," according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. Two of those hacks came from Scott Schebler and Matt Davidson, who tagged Manaea for a double and three-run home run, respectively. Through three spring starts, the 28-year-old now sports an unsightly 14.90 ERA, although he also has 10 strikeouts through 7.2 innings.
Mar 1 2020Manaea started a Cactus League split-squad win over the Indians on Saturday and allowed two earned runs on four hits across three innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was coming off a forgettable Cactus League debut Monday versus the Brewers, one in which he allowed six earned runs across just 1.2 innings. The left-hander had struggled some with the location of his slider, a pitch he's been heavily focused on this offseason and spring. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports Manaea was much sharper Saturday with the help of a fastball that hit 93 mph on multiple occasions, and due to a grip adjustment suggested to him by pitching coach Scott Emerson during a recent bullpen session, one that turns the slider into a hybrid cutter. Manaea deployed the offering approximately 10 times across his 48 pitches and plans to continue refining it during his remaining exhibition starts. "It's a little bit harder," Manaea said of the new cutter. "I was throwing it at 85 mph and I've never thrown a slider before at 85. It was cool. Really just trying to get where I feel like I have that explosiveness. It was a big step in the right direction."
Feb 25 2020Manaea, who allowed six earned runs on six hits while recording two strikeouts over 1.2 innings in a Cactus League loss to the Brewers on Monday, was nevertheless encouraged by the ongoing refinement of his slider, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ""It was good. I was pretty happy with it," Manaea said of the movement of his slider. "I was able to control it a little bit. Especially the first inning, it was good. I felt like I threw some really good ones right off my fingertips. I was really happy with it, movement-wise. Not so much location-wise." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw has been diligently working on sharpening up his slider this offseason and in camp thus far, even getting some one-on-one work in with the legendary Randy Johnson during the Big Unit's recent visit to spring training. Gallegos reports that most of Manaea's problems Monday stemmed from fastballs that were intended to serve as inside pitches and were instead essentially grooved down the middle of the plate. A pair of those resulted in two-run home runs from Orlando Arcia and Lucas Erceg, and the fact Manaea also threw 39 pitches overall may have led to some fatigue. The 28-year-old will look to bounce back in his next Cactus League start, which will likely come toward the end of the week or on the weekend.
Jan 10 2020Manaea agreed to a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the A's on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was the big lefty's second of four years as an arbitration-eligible player. He had a successful return from injury late in 2019 (1.21 ERA, 0.78 WHIP) and will look to build back up his innings in 2020.
Oct 1 2019Manaea will start in the American League Wild Card Game against the Rays on Wednesday.
Oct 1 2019Manaea will start in the American League Wild Card Game against the Rays on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw quickly returned to form after returning from left shoulder surgery that left him sidelined since September 2018, and will now get the chance to help Oakland advance in its sudden-death contest against the Rays. In five starts in 2019, Manaea carries a 4-0 record with an ERA of 1.21 with a 0.78 WHIP. Wednesday's matchup against the Rays should be favorable given the large number of lefties in Tampa's lineup.
Sep 28 2019Manaea may be the likeliest candidate to start the American League Wild Card Game against the Rays on Wednesday due to both his performance since coming off the injured list and Tampa's left-handed-heavy lineup, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mike Fiers is considered the other realistic alternative for the one-game playoff, and he posted a 1-0 record, 2.25 ERA and .171 BAA across 12.0 innings over two starts versus the Rays this season. However, Manaea has been positively dominant over his five starts since making his delayed season debut, generating a 4-0 record, 1.21 ERA and 30:7 K:BB across 29.2 innings. The Rays have also been about average hitting against southpaws, posting a .256/.326/.422 collective line with a .319 wOBA versus that handedness on the season while striking out at a 25.6 percent clip. Manager Bob Melvin is expected to announce his decision within the next couple of days, and if Manaea does get the call, he'll be working on a solid five days' rest.
Sep 26 2019Manaea (4-0) earned the win against Seattle on Thursday, pitching six innings and giving up one run on four hits and no walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea was in complete control throughout the quality start, tossing 54 of 82 pitches for strikes while yielding only one run in six innings. The southpaw has won each of his last four outings and now carries a pristine 1.21 ERA and 0.78 WHIP in five starts this season. Despite missing most of 2019 with an injured shoulder, Manaea has pitched well enough since his return to merit serious consideration for a start in the American League Wild Card Game on Tuesday, should Oakland qualify.
Sep 21 2019Manaea (3-0) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings. He earned the win in a blowout against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had plenty of run support from the get-go, as the Athletics plated nine runs in the first two innings. Only solo shots by Elvis Andrus and Danny Santana tarnished Manaea's performance. The southpaw has been excellent in 23.2 innings since returning from a shoulder injury, posting a 1.14 ERA and 0.80 WHIP while whiffing 25 batters. Expect Manaea to start against the Mariners on Friday in his regular-season finale.
Sep 15 2019Manaea (2-0) gave up three hits and one walk while striking out six through six scoreless innings to take the win over the Rangers on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manaea had 11 swinging strikes and 19 called strikes in another electric performance to earn his second win. The 27-year-old has been great since being activated with a 0.50 ERA and a 21:6 K:BB through three starts this season. Manaea is scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Rangers at RingCentral Coliseum.
Sep 8 2019Manaea (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out 10 and earning the win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone run to score on Manaea came in the form of a fifth-inning solo shot by Christin Stewart. The 27-year-old owns a 0.75 ERA and 15:5 K:BB in his first two starts after rehabbing from shoulder surgery. He should make his next start sometime next weekend against the Rangers in Texas.

Jul 22 2018Manea took the no-decision Sunday, yielding two runs on four hits while striking out five across 6.2 innings in the 6-5 win over the Giants.Overall, it was a pretty strong outing for Manaea and his first start without allowing a home run or walk since June 22. Coincidentally, June 22 was also the last time he struck out at least five batters. The 26-year-old southpaw will carry a 3.38 ERA and 88:24 K:BB into his next start in Colorado on Friday.
Jul 15 2018Manaea (9-6) got the win against the Giants on Sunday, giving up two earned runs on five hits over six innings, striking out one and walking one in Oakland's 6-2 victory. It was the fourth win in his last six starts for the left-hander, putting him one shy of double-digit victories heading into the All-Star break. He hasn't been posting gaudy strikeout numbers with 83 in 123.2 innings, but Manaea has shown to be a solid contributor in terms of ratios, as he's got a 3.42 ERA and a sparkling 0.99 WHIP. He's also holding opponents to a .214 average so far this season.
Jul 11 2018Manaea allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings Tuesday against the Astros, striking out four and walking one in a no-decision.Manaea was lifted after throwing 83 pitches (59 strikes), marking the first time in seven starts that the lefty didn't go at least five innings. Prior to Tuesday's outing, Manaea had thrown five consecutive quality starts. The 26-year-old still sports a respectable 3.44 ERA and an excellent 0.99 WHIP to go along with a .213 batting average against. He'll have one more start before the All-Star break, a matchup against the Giants in San Francisco.
Jul 4 2018Manaea threw seven innings Wednesday against the Padres, allowing a pair of runs on four hits and two walks, striking out just one batter. He did not factor into the decision. The lack of strikeouts is something of a concern, coming off a two-strikeout performance his last time out against the Tigers. Still, he managed to avoid the barrel of the bat outside of a second-inning Christian Villanueva home run. He's now given up three or fewer runs in six straight starts. He'll look to keep that streak going Monday against the Astros.
Jun 28 2018Manaea (8-6) picked up the win Thursday against the Tigers. He allowed two runs over 6.0 innings, notching two strikeouts while issuing one walk.Though Manaea was hardly fooling any Tigers hitters with just two punchouts, the lefty was still effective and put his team in position to get the victory. He has now won each of his last three decisions, allowing just six runs over 19.0 innings. He's lined up to make his next start Tuesday against the Padres.
Jun 26 2018Manaea's next scheduled start has been pushed back a day to Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The development is not due to any issue on Manaea's part, but rather, the fact that Chris Bassitt has been called up from Triple-A Nashville to take Daniel Mengden's (foot) place in the rotation for the time being. Bassitt just started the second game of a doubleheader against the White Sox last Friday, so rolling him out Wednesday will keep him on a schedule of four days' rest. Meanwhile, Manaea will pick up an extra day of rest after also having gone Friday in the first game of that day's twin bill. The 26-year-old lefty has emerged from a rocky May (1-4, 7.18 ERA) to generate three consecutive quality starts, along with a 2-0 record and 2.81 ERA across 25.2 June innings overall.
Jun 22 2018Manaea (7-6) notched the win Friday with seven innings of one-run, five-hit ball, walking none and striking out seven White Sox batters in Game 1 of the doubleheader.Manaea recorded a strike on 78 of his 106 pitches, including 12 swings-and-misses. Across his past two starts, the southpaw has fanned 10 and walked only one while posting a 3.38 ERA in 13.1 innings. He lines up for another favorable matchup early next week against the Tigers, depending on how the Athletics shuffle the rotation following the twin bill.
Jun 16 2018Manaea earned the win Saturday against the Angels, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk across six innings. He struck out four.Manaea was perfect through four innings before hitting a speed bump in the fifth frame, allowing back-to-back singles before serving up a three-run homer to Chris Young to put the Athletics down 3-1. The southpaw quickly righted the ship and didn't allow another run before exiting, and the A's were able to score four runs in the sixth inning to give Manaea his first win since May 14 -- a six-start stretch. He's now produced two straight quality starts and owns a solid 3.38 ERA across three starts in June after struggling mightily in May (7.18 ERA through six starts). Manaea will look to keep things rolling in his next outing, which will come on the road against the White Sox.
Jun 10 2018Manaea didn't factor into the decision against the Royals on Sunday, despite giving up just two earned runs on six hits over 7.1 strong innings, striking out six and walking none as Oakland eventually prevailed 3-2.Manaea had cooled down recently after a blistering start to the season, but he put in his best outing since April in this contest, and was unlucky not to receive enough run support to put him in a line for a victory that ultimately went to Blake Treinen. Manaea's numbers on the season still look solid despite his recent struggles, as he's got a 3.49 ERA and an impressive 0.99 WHIP through 80.1 innings. However, he's now given up at least one home run in eight consecutive starts, so he'll need to curb the long balls if he wants to get his ERA back to where it was during his dominant start to the year.
Jun 5 2018Manaea allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two over 5.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision.Manaea left in line for the win and surrendered fewer than three runs for the first time in seven starts, but it was still not the sharpest of outings. The lefty induced only three swinging strikes and threw just 48 of 90 pitches for strikes en route to issuing a season-high four walks and matching a season low with the two punchouts. The 26-year-old also yielded a pair of solo home runs and has now been taken deep at least once in seven straight starts. Following a terrific April that featured a no-hitter, Manaea is sporting a 6.63 ERA since the start of May. Next up is a home start against the Royals on Sunday.
May 31 2018Manaea (5-6) allowed four runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts over five innings in a loss Wednesday to the Rays.Manaea was primarily the victim of one bad pitch that turned into a three-run home run off the bat of Rob Refsnyder in the third inning. Other than that, Manaea was solid, as he induced 11 swinging strikes in 95 pitches and walked one batter (or less) for the eighth time in 12 starts. Unfortunately, home runs continue to be Manaea's big problem, as Refsnyder's blast was the 10th home run Manaea has allowed. Despite the resulting 1.2 HR/9, Manaea has a solid 3.60 ERA, so it's easy to be optimistic about what he is capable of if he can find a way to keep the ball in the yard. Manaea's next start will come Tuesday against Texas.
May 26 2018Manaea (5-5) allowed six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings against the Diamondbacks on Friday, striking out two and walking two in a losing effort.Manaea allowed four extra-base hits on the evening, the last of which was a two-run triple by Paul Goldschmidt that knocked him out of the game in the fourth. This was Manaea's shortest start of the year, and the first time he's given up more than four runs in an outing. After a fantastic April -- in which he allowed just four earned runs across five starts -- Manaea has allowed a total of 21 earned runs through five starts in May, bringing his ERA to 3.34 on the year. His next start will be against the Rays at home.
May 19 2018Manaea allowed four runs in five innings in a no decision Saturday against the Blue Jays. He gave up five hits and three walks while striking out just two batters. It was perhaps the weakest start of the season for the southpaw, who hasn't been hit particularly hard in any game so far this year. He notched four scoreless innings Saturday before running into trouble in a four-run fifth. After allowing just five earned runs in his first six starts, Manaea has now given up 15 in his last four. He'll next take the hill Thursday against the Mariners.
May 14 2018Manaea (5-4) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk across six-plus innings to earn the win Monday against the Red Sox. He struck out four.Manaea allowed a pair of runs in the third inning and another while working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. He came out for the seventh inning after a one-two-three sixth, but allowed a leadoff home run before he was removed from the game. Though he was knocked around at times, Manaea threw an impressive 74 percent of his pitches for strikes and still delivered a quality start against one of the league's best offenses. He's come back to earth a bit after a great start, but he'll still take a superb 2.35 ERA into Saturday's start against the Blue Jays.
May 9 2018Manaea (4-4) allowed four runs on seven hits in Tuesday's loss to the Astros, striking out three and walking zero in 5.2 innings. This was the second consecutive game that Manaea has allowed four runs, bringing his ERA above 2.00 for the first time this season. Manaea still sports an excellent .170 batting average against, as well as an 0.72 WHIP. Additionally, the lefty has a 45:7 K:BB through 55.1 innings. He will next face off with the Red Sox in Boston.
May 3 2018Manaea (4-3) took the loss against the Mariners on Thursday, giving up four earned runs on six hits, striking out five with no walks as Oakland fell 4-1.Manaea had been one of the most dominant starters in the league going into this game but he took the loss against Seattle after giving up a run in the first inning and three in the third. He's still got ridiculous numbers so far with a 1.63 ERA and a 0.66 WHIP, so the fact that an outing where he missed a quality start by one run feels like such a dud is a testament to how well he's been pitching. He'll take the mound next at home against the Astros next Tuesday.
Apr 28 2018Manaea (4-2) struck out seven and walked one in Friday's win over the Astros, allowing one unearned run on four hits in seven innings.Manaea shut down the Astros on Friday, allowing no extra-base hits on his way to securing his third consecutive win. Manaea didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, and thereby set a new franchise record for most consecutive innings pitched without allowing a hit at 14.1, dating back to the start before his no-hitter. The 26-year-old lefty has yet to allow more than two runs in a start, and is currently holding opponents to a .134 batting average against. His next start will be a matchup with the Mariners in Seattle.
Apr 21 2018Manaea (3-2) earned the win, walking only two batters while striking out 10 in a complete game no-hit shutout of the Red Sox on Saturday.Manaea baffled the Red Sox Saturday night and recorded the first no-hitter of the 2018 season. There will be some discussion regarding two plays in the game, the first of which came in the fifth inning when Marcus Semien failed to make a catch as he drifted into field that was ruled an error. The second potentially controversial moment came one inning later when Andrew Benintendi appeared to reach first base safely on an infield hit, but was called out for leaving the basepath. However, neither should distract from Manaea's tremendous outing in which he induced 15 swinging strikes and allowed only three baserunners, none of which got past second base. This adds to his excellent start to the season as he now has a 1.23 ERA across 36.2 innings.
Apr 15 2018Manaea (2-2) picked up the win against the Mariners on Sunday, striking out four over seven innings while allowing one run on two hits and two walks.A solo homer was the only blemish on the day, as Manaea allowed just one run for the third time in his four starts this season. The lefty has allowed four long balls and isn't racking up a ton of strikeouts, but otherwise the 26-year-old looks poised for a breakout season, as he sports stellar ratios with a 1.63 ERA and 0.72 WHIP. He'll look to keep rolling when he takes the hill Saturday against the Red Sox.
Apr 10 2018Manaea (1-2) got the loss on Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking one in Oakland's 4-0 defeat to the Dodgers. He didn't get rewarded with the win for the effort but it was nonetheless a third straight solid start from the 26-year-old left-hander to begin the season, as Manaea is now the owner of a 1.74 ERA and a sparkling 0.77 WHIP through 22.2 innings this year. His ratios aren't likely to stay that ridiculous all year (he'd be a Cy Young candidate if they did) but he certainly has the look of a pitcher who has taken a step forward. He'll look keep the hot start rolling in his next outing against the White Sox on April 16.
Apr 5 2018Manaea (1-1) picked up the win over the Rangers on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over eight innings while striking out four. The left-hander threw 64 of his 94 pitches for strikes in a strong outing. Velocity remains a potential issue for Manaea, however -- by the end of the night he was having trouble hitting 90 mph with his fastball, and he generated only seven swinging strikes in his eight innings. He gets an exploitable matchup Tuesday on the road against a Dodgers squad that's already shown signs of struggling against southpaws.
Mar 31 2018Manaea (0-1) took the loss despite a sterling outing on Friday, giving up just one run, striking out seven and allowing just four hits over 7.2 innings in a 2-1 defeat to the Angels.Manaea was a hard-luck loser on Friday due to a first-inning home run served up to Mike Trout and an equally brilliant showing from his counterpart Tyler Skaggs. You should never read too much into one start and Manaea is coming off a 2017 season where he logged a 4.37 ERA, so there are reasons for pause when assessing his potential for a breakout season. That said, he had a solid spring and he certainly had the look of a top-end starter on Friday. He'll just need to prove it over a larger sample size to become an impact fantasy starter.
Mar 19 2018Manaea, who recorded three strikeouts and allowed an earned run on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in a Saturday 4-1 Cactus League loss to the Mariners, came away impressed with debuting backstop Jonathan Lucroy, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. "He's very well prepared," Manaea said, "and he definitely takes charge and controls the entire diamond. Having a guy like that, especially with the time and knowledge that he has, is huge."Manaea had the distinction of being the first Athletics hurler to kick the proverbial tires on Lucroy, who helped the left-hander whittle his spring ERA down to 2.53 with some savvy on-the-fly adjustments and solid overall game management. Given Jharel Cotton's season-ending elbow injury, Manaea's importance to the makeshift starting rotation increases even further. His solid spring offers reason for optimism, as do the results generated during his initial opportunity to work with his new backstop.
Mar 12 2018Manaea (1-0) allowed two earned runs on four hits over four innings in Sunday's 7-2 Cactus League win over the Cubs. He struck out two.The pair of blemishes on his final line came in the form of home runs, as Kyle Schwarber and Chris Gimenez went deep back-to-back in the second off a slider and first-pitch fastball, respectively, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. Otherwise, it was another sharp outing for the lefty, who's averaging a strikeout per inning over his first two outings. Manaea doubled his workload in terms of innings over that of his first appearance as well, lending credence to the notion that the back issues that delayed his spring training debut are squarely behind him.
Mar 7 2018Manaea (back) fired two scoreless innings in Tuesday's 5-3 Cactus League win over the Rangers, allowing a hit and two walks while recording three strikeouts.According to a report by Jane Lee of MLB.com, Manaea was especially pleased with his slider, a pitch he allowed a paltry .174 average against last season while inducing 89 swings-and-misses. despite laboring a bit while working up to 45 pitches over his pair of frames. However, the southpaw struck out the side in the first after allowing two men on, and he finished his afternoon with two ground-ball outs to strand Ronald Guzman in the second. Manaea's outing was especially encouraging considering he'd been scratched from his start a week prior due to back tightness. "He ended up getting the swings and misses that we wanted to see, used all his pitches," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "Starting out in a good direction for him."
Mar 6 2018Manaea (back) is officially starting Tuesday's spring game against the Rangers. As anticipated, the southpaw will toe the rubber to start Oakland's Tuesday tilt after being scratched last week due to back tightness. It's unclear how many innings he'll log in this particular game, but it's possible that the Athletics could hold him back a bit to ensure his back doesn't flare up again. However, Manaea should be 100 percent for Opening Day barring any setbacks.
Mar 1 2018Manaea (back) is scheduled to make his Cactus League debut Tuesday against the Rangers, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Manaea was able to throw a 30-to-35 pitch simulated game Wednesday without any problems. He was previously scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday with middle back tightness but there doesn't appear to be any real concern over his status as the calendar flips to March. Expect him to be at full health by Opening Day barring any setbacks.
Feb 28 2018Manaea (back) is set to toss a 40-to-45 pitch simulated game Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. This session will determine whether Manaea will be able to take the mound for his next scheduled Cactus League outing. The southpaw was scratched from Tuesday's start with middle back tightness, which appears to be just a minor setback considering he will be throwing over 40 pitches the following day.
Feb 28 2018Manaea (back) thought his simulated game went well Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The 26-year-old lefty threw 30 to 35 pitches without issues. He was scratched from Tuesday's Cactus league start with back tightness but expects to take his turn in the rotation in a few days. It appears that he'll be fully recovered by the time the regular season begins.
Feb 27 2018Manaea has been removed from his start Tuesday against Cleveland with middle back tightness, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Manaea has battled minor back issues before but they rarely cause him to miss much time. He should have no problem being ready for the start of the season, though this serves as a reminder that he's always a risk to miss a few starts.
Sep 28 2017Manaea (12-10) earned the win over the Rangers on Thursday in his final start of the 2017 season. He was charged with one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks over 6.2 innings. The 25-year-old lefty struggled throughout most of the second half, prompting calls for an early shutdown, but Manaea heads into the offseason on a positive note following this gem. He showed no ill effects from his recent back issue, inducing 13 swinging strikes on 90 pitches. He should come at a nice discount in fantasy drafts and auctions next spring.
Sep 28 2017Manaea (back) is good to go for Thursday's start against the Rangers.Manaea will make his final start of the 2017 season in Texas after missing his previous outing due to a minor back issue. The left-hander has accumulated a 4.56 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 28 starts this season, and allowed two earned runs over five innings during his win against the Rangers in late August.
Sep 25 2017Manaea (back) will make his final start of the season Thursday against the Rangers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.Manaea was scratched from his start over the weekend due to upper back tightness, but it was never expect to end his season. The 25-year-old was cleared to rejoin the starting rotation for one final start after tossing a successful bullpen session Monday. He owns a 4.56 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 152 innings this season.
Sep 23 2017Manaea was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Rangers with a minor back issue, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The good news is the ailment doesn't appear to be anything overly serious, and Manaea is hoping to make his final start of the season next week. Raul Alcantara will step in to start Saturday in his place.
Sep 17 2017Manaea (11-10) allowed three runs -- just one earned -- on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters through five innings to secure the win against Philadelphia on Sunday. After allowing seven runs through just 3.2 frames to Boston in his previous start, this was an encouraging bounce-back showing. Manaea sports a respectable 4.12 FIP and 7.9 K/9 for the season, and he's now allowed three runs or fewer in five of his past six outings, so his fantasy value is trending in the right direction. The 25-year-old lefty lines up for consecutive starts against the Rangers to finish the campaign.
Sep 12 2017Manaea (10-10) surrendered seven runs on 11 hits over 3.2 innings Tuesday while striking out four to take the loss in an 11-1 rout by the Red Sox.After delivering quality starts in three of his last four outings, Manaea was dreadful in this one, allowing hits in every inning he pitched, including a triple and homer to Mookie Betts. The lefty will take a 4.65 ERA into his next start Sunday on the road against the Phillies.
Sep 6 2017Manaea (10-9) earned the win after allowing five hits and three walks through six scoreless innings Wednesday against the Angels. He struck out six.Manaea turned in another quality start Wednesday; his second straight and third in his past four outings. The 25-year-old owns a healthy 3.04 ERA over that span, though his 1.39 WHIP and 5.3 K/9 are a little less enticing. He looks to be back on track after allowing 18 runs (13 earned) over 6.2 innings in his first three starts of August. He'll take a 4.33 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled for Tuesday against the Red Sox.
Sep 1 2017Manaea (9-9) gave up three earned runs on seven hits and three walks over 6.2 innings in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Mariners. He struck out three. The 25-year-old southpaw was a tough-luck loser, as he certainly pitched well enough to reach double-digit wins for the first time in his young career. However, a lack of run support helped do in Manaea, who's now given up three earned runs or less in three straight starts after allowing 18 runs (13 earned) in the three outings prior. Manaea will once again try for his 10th win when he faces the Angels at home next Wednesday.
Aug 26 2017Manaea (9-8) earned the win over the Rangers on Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over five innings. The lefty averaged over 20 pitches per frame, but he was significantly better than Cole Hamels on the other side. He finished his day with four scoreless after a two-run first inning. Manaea was coming off a quality start in his last outing, but he gave up two homers in that game, bringing his total to eight allowed over the span of six starts. Diminished velocity was a likely culprit behind those struggles, and the A's decided to give him a couple extra days between starts to combat fatigue.
Aug 24 2017Manaea, who was originally scheduled to start Wednesday against the Orioles, had his next outing pushed to Saturday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports. The left-hander rebounded from a difficult three-start stretch in his most recent outing, delivering a quality start against the Astros last Friday. The rescheduling wasn't particularly tied in to Manaea, although the extra rest is likely to help the diminishing velocity he's recently experienced. However, the overriding reason for the move was to accommodate Daniel Gossett, who was called up from Triple-A Nashville and took the hill Wednesday.
Aug 19 2017Manaea (8-8) dropped the decision in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Astros, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings while striking out two. After surrendering 18 runs over just 6.2 innings in his last three starts, this was in many ways a welcome return to form for Manaea as he delivered his 11th quality start of the year. On the other hand, he gave up two more homers, and his 2.2 HR/9 in seven starts since the All-Star break has been a big driver in his ugly recent results. The lefty will try to build some momentum in his next outing Wednesday on the road against the Orioles.
Aug 12 2017Manaea gave up six runs on six hits and one walk while recording just one out in Saturday's start against the Orioles. This may be the worst fantasy start of the year by any pitcher, as Manaea recorded just one out and failed to record a strikeout, all while destroying his owner's ratios. Manaea had a 3.68 ERA back on July 16, but has since given up 20 runs over 19 innings, and at this point it's very difficult to feel comfortable deploying him until he rights the ship. He lines up to pitch in Houston next weekend.
Aug 6 2017Manaea was roughed up for six runs (five earned) on six hits with two walks and a strikeout in just 3.1 innings Sunday against the Angels.Manaea was lucky to escape with a no-decision as opposing starter Ricky Nolasco was almost as bad. The 25-year-old lefty has been unable to gain any traction in his past two starts, lasting just 6.1 innings while allowing 12 runs. Not all of that damage is his fault, with five of those 12 runs being of the unearned variety. Manaea will hope for better play both from himself and the defense Friday against the Orioles.
Aug 2 2017Manaea (8-6) pitched just three innings against the Giants on Tuesday, giving up six runs (two earned) on nine hits and a walk in a 10-4 loss.Things went wrong for him from the very beginning, with Gorkys Hernandez's leadoff double and Yonder Alonso's error two batters later sparking a rally that saw the Giants bat around in the first inning. Of course, outings like this one have been precious rare for Manaea, who's been turning in generally fantasy-relevant results in his sophomore campaign. He's had some jitters here and there, as all young pitchers do, but fantasy owners should expect the 25-year-old to get back on track soon, with Sunday's start against the Angels presenting a fine opportunity to do so.
Aug 1 2017Manaea, who has a career-high eight victories this season, has used his slider to dominate hitters of either handedness, Matt Kelly of MLB.com reports. The young left-hander's considerably wide and low release point has made it difficult for hitters to discern between his fastball and changeup, but his slider has begun to draw plenty of attention in its own right. Manaea has grown increasingly comfortable throwing the pitch, utilizing it 17.5 percent of the time as per Statcast after only deploying it at a 12.9-percent clip in 2016. Manaea has gotten swings and misses approximately 43 percent of the time and allowed just a .167 average over 86 at-bats when deploying the slider, typically locating it low and inside to right-handed hitters while placing it low and away to lefty bats.
Jul 27 2017Manaea (8-5) allowed three earned runs off seven hits while striking out seven over seven innings during Thursday's no-decision against Toronto.Besides a couple home runs to Josh Donaldson and Kendrys Morales, Manaea was able to command the strike zone yet again, marking a fourth quality start in his past five outings. This was the first time since May 20 that Manaea didn't record a single base on balls, as the left-hander was able to throw strikes during 68 of his 99 pitches. On the year, the former Indiana State Sycamore has posted an ERA of 3.82 and 1.23 WHIP with an 8.7 K/9 for the A's. He projects to face the Giants in San Francisco for his next start.
Jul 22 2017Manaea allowed four runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out just two batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Saturday. This wasn't Manaea's sharpest showing, and the two punchouts were his fewest in a start since returning from the disabled list May 15. It was a rare off outing, though. The lefty has been a decent fantasy asset this season with a 3.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 8.8 K/9 for the campaign, and his eight wins are a solid total considering he's pitching for a basement-dwelling club. Manaea projects to face Toronto at the Rogers Centre in his next start.
Jul 16 2017Manaea allowed two earned runs over seven innings and picked up the win in Sunday's victory over the Indians. He allowed five hits and posted an 8:3 K:BB in the game.Manaea continues to throw the ball well for the A's and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight of 11 starts, a span over which he has lowered his ERA from 5.52 to 3.68. He will look to keep things going in his next start later this week against the Mets.
Jul 7 2017Manaea (7-5) allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out just three batters through seven innings during Friday's loss to the Mariners.Manaea has allowed three runs or fewer in nine of his past 10 starts and sports a 3.76 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 9.0 K/9 for the year. The young lefty is emerging as a matchup-proof fantasy asset entering the second half, and there is potential the best is still ahead. It's worth noting that an innings cap could come into play for the 25-year-old Manaea -- especially with Oakland last in the AL West.
Jul 3 2017Manaea allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six batters through 7.1 innings during Sunday's loss to Atlanta. He didn't factor into the decision. The young lefty has now held opponents to three runs or fewer in eight of his past nine starts and sports a solid 3.75 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 9.4 K/9 for the campaign. His 3.67 FIP is also right in line with his other statistics, so he projects to remain a strong fantasy asset moving forward. Manaea's game-to-game consistency is also encouraging. A road date at Safeco Field against the Mariners is up next.
Jun 27 2017Manaea (7-4) allowed one run on nine hits and three walks during Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Astros. He struck out three and was credited with the win.Manaea didn't have his best stuff going for him Tuesday, but was able to limit the hard-hitting Astros to just one run en route to his seventh win of the season. After facing the Yankees on June 16 and the Astros over his last two starts, Manaea will have the opportunity to face a more manageable opponent as he currently projects to square off against the Braves on Sunday.
Jun 21 2017Manaea (6-4) struck out eight while allowing three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over six innings in Wednesday's home loss to Houston. After a five-run effort against the Yankees his last time out, Manaea bounced right back with a solid outing, although the result wasn't a favorable one. Still, his 81:28 K:BB over 73.1 innings should have his fantasy owners pleased even if his ERA remains a bit inflated at 4.05. If everyone stays on schedule, Manaea will rematch Mike Fiers and the Astros in Houston on Tuesday.
Jun 17 2017Manaea didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-6 win over the Yankees, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. The young lefty did have the advantage of facing a Yankees squad that was sitting a couple of regulars, but he turned in a serviceable performance in many respects despite giving up five runs. Manaea notched 17 swinging strikes among his 107 pitches and was mainly done in by two mistakes, a three-run home run by Aaron Judge in the third and a solo shot by Chris Carter in the sixth. The 25-year-old did an impressive job keeping the ball down otherwise, inducing 11 groundballs overall. The outing did snap a five-start winning streak for Manaea, but he'll look to start a new one when he takes on the Astros at home next Wednesday.
Jun 11 2017Manaea (6-3) gave up two earned runs on six hits, two walks, a wild pitch and a hit batsman over seven innings during Saturday's 7-2 win over the Rays in the second game of a doubleheader. He struck out five. The lefty worked up to 103 pitches and racked up 20 swinging strikes over that span. It was Manaea's fourth consecutive quality start, as well as his fifth straight outing giving up two earned runs or less. He's notched victories in each of those contests while lowering his ERA from 5.52 to 3.67 in the process. He'll look to extend his current successful stretch when he tangles with the Yankees at home in his next start.
Jun 6 2017Manaea (5-3) gave up two earned runs on four hits and three walks over six innings in Monday's 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. He struck out seven.Manaea got into some early trouble in the first but was quickly given a reprieve when Ryon Healy bashed the first of two home runs in the second to stake the young lefty to a 3-1 lead. The 25-year-old then settled in and allowed just one other run the rest of the way, exiting after six frames and a season-high 111 pitches. It was Manaea's third straight quality start, a stretch in which he's allowed just three earned runs overall and compiled a 24:5 K:BB across 20 innings. He'll look notch what would be his fifth consecutive victory when he faces the Rays on the road next Saturday.
May 31 2017Manaea (4-3) tossed seven impressive innings in Cleveland on Wednesday, striking out nine while allowing just a single run on three hits and a walk. He's now won three straight starts, and the last two have been particularly impressive efforts. Manaea's showing more and more flashes of his sky-high upside, and he's now pulled his ERA under the 4.00 mark to 3.91; his accompanying 1.03 WHIP and promising 54:19 K:BB (48.1 innings) would suggest that his run prevention will continue improving. The 25-year-old righty will make his next start at home against Toronto on Monday.
May 26 2017Manaea (3-3) allowed no runs on four hits and one walk while striking out eight over seven innings to earn the win Friday against the Yankees.Manaea left the contest in a scoreless game, but the offense came up with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to reward him for his outstanding effort. This was only the second time he posted a quality start over his last seven outings, and he lowered his ERA to 4.35. His best fantasy asset has been his ability to strike out batters, as he's notched 45 of them over his last 41.1 innings of work. He'll make his next start Friday against the Indians.
May 26 2017Manaea will start Friday against the Yankees in place of Kendall Graveman, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.Oakland had off days on both Monday and Thursday this week, so Manaea will have had a solid five days since his last start, Saturday against Boston. The southpaw has compiled a 5.24 ERA over seven starts this season, but hasn't given up more than four earned runs over his last five starts and is holding opposing hitters to a .189 BAA. Jharel Cotton will be recalled to start Saturday's matinee.
May 20 2017Manaea (2-3) allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits while striking out three over five innings to earn the win Saturday against the Red Sox.Manaea left the contest with a 3-2 deficit before the offense erupted with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn him his third victory of the campaign. Despite the decent outing, he's only had a single quality start all year, and his 5.24 ERA makes him a risky player to use in fantasy lineups. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Yankees.
May 15 2017Manaea (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday. As anticipated, the young left-hander will return from injury in order to start Monday's contest with the division-rival Mariners. Manaea has been sidelined since April 26, but prior to getting hurt, he held a 5.18 ERA and 10.0 K/9 in 24.1 innings pitched. To make room for him on the major-league roster, catcher Bruce Maxwell was sent back to Triple-A Nashville.
May 15 2017Manaea (1-3) allowed four runs on only two hits (one home run) while walking five and striking out seven over five innings in Monday's 6-5 loss to the Mariners. The young left-hander walked four in the first inning after a leadoff single by Jean Segura, and it led to a 38-pitch opening frame. The good news is that Manaea finished strong, retiring the final 10 batters he faced in his first start since April 26. The 25-year-old's ceiling remains high because of his strikeout stuff (10.4 K/9), but his lack of control (5.2 BB/9) makes him a risky mixed league option for the time being.
May 12 2017Manaea (shoulder) is scheduled to start Monday's series opener with the Mariners, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. All systems are go for the young southpaw, as the Athletics have already cleared a rotation spot for him after optioning Jharel Cotton back to Triple-A. This development would line Manaea up to square off against Yovani Gallardo in Seattle.
May 11 2017Manaea (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the disabled list Sunday or Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It appears Manaea is ready to rejoin the Athletics after tossing a four-inning rehab game at Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday. He allowed just one run and struck out five during that outing. The 25-year-old held a 5.18 ERA through 24.1 innings (five starts) before landing not he disabled list. He'll likely take the rotation spot of Jharel Cotton, who was optioned back to Triple-A Thursday.
