Feb 8 2024Fulmer (elbow) signed a two-year, minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Feb. 2. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer is expected to miss 2024 following UCL revision surgery, so he'll rehab with the Red Sox this year before joining their bullpen in 2025, assuming all goes well. The veteran right-hander held a 4.42 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 65:28 K:BB across 57 innings in 2023 with the Cubs before getting injured.
Oct 19 2023Fulmer underwent UCL revision surgery Thursday on his right elbow and is expected to miss the 2024 season, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This procedure comes with brutal timing for the 30-year-old reliever, who is set to become a free agent in November. He inked a one-year, $4 million contract with the Cubs prior to the 2023 season and went on to post a 4.42 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 65:28 K:BB across 57 innings before finishing the year on the injured list because of a forearm strain.
Sep 16 2023Fulmer was placed on the injured list Saturday with a right forearm strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer suffered an apparent setback, as he returned from the same issue on Monday. This will almost certainly end his regular season, though it's possible he could return for the postseason if he can get healthy.
Sep 12 2023Fulmer earned a save against the Rockies on Monday, issuing one walk and striking out two batters over two-thirds of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was activated from the injured list Monday and was immediately thrown into the fire, taking the mound with one out in the ninth inning and Chicago holding a one-run lead. He put the first two batters he faced on base via a walk and a hit-by-pitch but rebounded in impressive fashion by fanning Harold Castro and Brenton Doyle to escape the jam. The veteran reliever's save came on the same day Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay landed on the injured list with a forearm strain, though that doesn't necessarily suggest Fulmer will be the team's top ninth-inning option moving forward. Julian Merryweather has pitched very well this season and picked up a save Sunday, but he was likely unavailable Monday after pitching each of the previous three days.
Sep 11 2023Fulmer (forearm) was activated from the injured list Monday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer did not encounter any issues after landing on the injured list in late August, and he will be back in Chicago's bullpen moving forward. Closer Adbert Alzolay (forearm) was placed on the injured list in the corresponding move, so roles are set to change at the back end of the bullpen. Fulmer could be in the mix for saves, but he's likely behind a fellow reliever or two.
Sep 7 2023Fulmer (forearm) threw a successful bullpen session Wednesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was his first time throwing off a mound since he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 26 due to a mild right forearm strain. There is not an exact timetable for Fulmer's return to the Cubs' bullpen, but he would seem to be getting close. He may be allowed to skip a minor-league rehab assignment if his side work continues to go smoothly.
Sep 5 2023Fulmer (forearm) is expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been playing catch without issue over the last few days and is ready to take the next step in his recovery from the mild right forearm strain that sent him to the injured list Aug. 26. He could potentially skip a minor-league rehab assignment and return to the Cubs' bullpen this weekend if everything continues to go smoothly.
Sep 1 2023Fulmer (forearm) will play catch Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer is less than a week removed from landing on the injured list with a right forearm strain, but he's made a swift recovery and is ready to do some throwing. The reliever should have a chance to return when first eligible on Sept. 10 if he can avoid setbacks.
Aug 29 2023Fulmer (forearm) is expected to resume throwing later this week, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer just landed on the 15-day injured list this past Saturday with a right forearm strain, but an examination conducted Monday showed that he is already improving. The 30-year-old setup man might be ready for activation when first eligible Sept. 10.
Aug 26 2023The Cubs placed Fulmer on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right forearm strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has surrendered six runs in 5.2 innings across his last seven appearances, and he'll now be sidelined for at least two weeks in order to address a forearm issue. Jordan Wicks was called up from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move and will start for the Cubs on Saturday.
Jul 23 2023Fulmer did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over two innings against the Cardinals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer didn't give the Cubs the start they'd hoped for, surrendering a leadoff home run to Lars Nootbaar on the very first pitch of the game. He also gave up a single and a walk in the inning but was able to work his way out of the jam and added two strikeouts in the second before being relieved by Drew Smyly to open the third. The right-handed reliever had not allowed a hit in three straight appearances coming in and now holds a lousy 9:7 K:BB in July.
Jul 21 2023Fulmer will serve as the Cubs' opener Saturday versus the Cardinals, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer threw 15 pitches in relief for the Cubs in Friday's 4-3 win over St. Louis, so he'll probably only cover the first inning of Saturday's tilt. The 30-year-old right-hander holds a 4.43 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 46:21 K:BB through 42.2 total frames on the season.
Jul 1 2023Fulmer, who pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in Friday's 10-1 win over the Guardians, has a 0.66 ERA across 13.2 innings this month. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has only been scored upon once in 12 June appearances, and he has also registered 14 strikeouts across the 13.2 innings. The veteran entered the month with a 7.36 ERA for the season, but he's been able to lower that to 4.79. Fulmer seems to have regained his form as a reliable reliever, though he's not seeing save chances with the Cubs, so his fantasy value remains limited.
May 27 2023Fulmer (0-4) allowed two runs while retiring only two batters to take the loss Saturday against the Reds. He gave up a hit and two walks while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was tagged for a two-run home run by Jonathan India in the fifth inning to ultimately get saddled with the loss in the 8-5 defeat, The veteran has struggled with his new team, as he now has a 7.84 ERA and has allowed two earned runs or more six times in 23 outings this year. Fulmer has lost his grip on a high-leverage role and has little fantasy appeal at the moment.
May 15 2023Fulmer (0-3) allowed two runs on two hits while retiring two batters to take the loss Monday against the Astros. He walked one and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer came on in the seventh inning and struggled, serving up a two-run home to Alex Bregman before getting the hook. The veteran has allowed five earned runs across 1.1 innings in his last two appearances, and he's stuck with an ugly 7.50 ERA overall. Fulmer was better last year with a 3.39 ERA while splitting time between Detroit and Minnesota, so he could still rebound in 2023. However, he's worked his way out of closer mix for the time being and has little value in most fantasy formats.
May 6 2023Fulmer worked around a hit to pitch a scoreless inning and record a hold in Friday's win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer worked the eighth in the eventual 4-1 victory for his third hold of the season, and he's been pitching better lately. Since allowing six earned runs combined in consecutive outings on April 20 and 23, the veteran has now logged four straight scoreless appearances. Fulmer now has a 6.08 ERA and should continue to see high-leverage work for the Cubs if he looks like this version.
Mar 30 2023Fulmer pitched a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and two strikeouts in Thursday's 4-0 win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer got the ninth inning while Brad Boxberger worked the eighth, but it was a non-save situation. Still, it's a promising sign for Fulmer that he was the last reliever used on Opening Day. He figures to split closer duties with Boxberger based on spring training reports, though Fulmer may be slightly ahead at this point.
Mar 14 2023Fulmer and Brad Boxberger are viewed as the primary options at closer for the Cubs, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It could ultimately wind up being more of a carousel, with Brandon Hughes, Rowan Wick and Adbert Alzolay also somewhere in the mix, but Fulmer has expressed a strong desire to claim the job and Boxberger boasts 82 career major-league saves. Fulmer, 29, signed a one-year, $4 million contract with Chicago in February after working to a 3.39 ERA with 61 strikeouts over 63.2 innings last season between the Tigers and Twins. He picked up three saves along the way.
Mar 6 2023Fulmer has yet to allow a run across three Cactus League appearances. He's struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been steady so far in spring training action, and he should be able to carry that over into the regular season after posting strong numbers out of the bullpen in 2021 and 2022. The veteran righty should have a high-leverage role with the Cubs, possibly even closing out games, though Brandon Hughes and Brad Boxberger are also in the mix at the end of games. Fulmer's fantasy value would obviously increase if he's seeing regular save opportunities.
Feb 10 2023Fulmer agreed to a contract with the Cubs on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The terms of the deal are not yet known. Fulmer's velocity and strikeouts were down a bit in 2022 but he remained mostly effective, posting a 3.39 ERA and 61:28 K:BB over 63.2 innings for the Tigers and Twins. The 29-year-old has some closing experience and could be in the mix to get some saves as part of a Cubs bullpen which isn't settled in the late innings.
Sep 8 2022Fulmer recorded the save Thursday against New York, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning in a 4-3 win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer entered the game in the ninth inning with one out and a runner on first. He allowed a double and an intentional walk to load the bases before retiring the final two batters without allowing a run to score. It was his third save of the season and first for Minnesota. Since being acquired by the Twins before the trade deadline, he's compiled a 3.38 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB in 16 innings across 18 appearances. Jorge Lopez was used earlier in the game in a high-leverage situation and Fulmer will likely return to his setup role for future outings.
Aug 2 2022Fulmer was traded from the Tigers to the Twins on Tuesday in exchange for right-handed pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer gave up multiple runs several times recently, but he otherwise shined for the Tigers prior to the All-Star break. He figures to join the late-inning mix with his new squad.
Aug 1 2022Fulmer allowed two runs on four hits while retiring just one batter in Monday's extra-inning loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer got the bottom of the eighth inning with Detroit up 2-0 and started the frame with a strikeout. It went downhill quickly from there, however, as the righty allowed four straight singles. The final hit from Jose Miranda brought home two runs and got Fulmer out of the game, saddling him with his fourth blown save of the year. Despite the setback, Fulmer has been mostly solid this season with a 3.20 ERA and 39 strikeouts across 39.1 innings.
Jul 27 2022Fulmer (3-4) pitched a scoreless inning of relief and earned the win Wednesday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer pitched the top of the ninth with the Tigers down 3-2, then earned his third win of the season when Detroit scored twice in the bottom of the inning. The righty has pitched well this season with a 2.84 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 38 innings, and he could be someone the rebuilding Tigers decide to move before the trade deadline next week. Fulmer is set to become a free agent after the season.
Jul 15 2022Fulmer (2-4) allowed two runs on two hits while retiring two batters and took the loss Friday against the Guardians. He walked two and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been good this season but the righty didn't have his best stuff Friday, allowing an earned run for the first time in his last six outings. Fulmer actually made it through all of June without allowing an earned run, and he still has a strong 2.38 ERA for the year despite the hiccup. The 29-year-old should remain one of Detroit's better relief options in front of closer Gregory Soto.
Jul 10 2022Fulmer (2-3) allowed two unearned runs while retiring two batters and took the loss in Sunday's contest against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was on his way to three straight flyouts in the eighth inning, but Robbie Grossman misplayed a ball, allowing Luis Robert to get to second. The Tigers then intentionally walked Jose Abreu and called on Gregory Soto from the bullpen. Soto proceeded to allow both inherited runners to score, saddling Fulmer with a tough-luck loss. The righty has been solid this year despite the losing record, as he now has a 1.93 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 32 strikeouts across 32.2 innings. Fulmer also has two saves in four opportunities, though Soto seems to have a pretty firm grip on the closer role at the moment.
Jul 8 2022Fulmer earned a save with a scoreless inning in Friday's win over the White Sox. He gave up a hit and struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer plunked Tim Anderson and gave up a single to AJ Pollock but he was able to retire the next two batters to finish off the 7-5 win. He's allowed just one earned run over his last 16.2 frames, lowering his season ERA to 1.97 alongside two saves and 15 holds. Gregory Soto didn't pitch Friday after throwing 21 pitches in Thursday's win over the White Sox.
Jun 20 2022Fulmer tossed a scoreless inning of relief to earn a hold in Sunday's win over the Rangers. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer is up to 10 holds this season, and he's pitched well with a 2.16 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 26 strikeouts across 25 innings. He's surpassed the nine holds he recorded last year, though he also posted 14 saves in 2021 as the Tigers were a bit more fluid with the closer role. This year, Gregory Soto leads the team with 13 saves, while Fulmer has just one so far. It looks like he'll continue to rack up holds, but Soto has the closer role fairly secure at this point.
May 31 2022Fulmer pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts in the Tigers' 4-0 win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't a save situation, but Fulmer still effectively shut the door on Minnesota, needing just 10 pitches to retire the side. The righty is behind Gregory Soto in the pecking order for saves at the moment, though he's pitched well with a 2.89 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 18 strikeouts across 18.2 innings this season. Fulmer did have 14 saves a season ago, so it's possible he gets a look in the closer role at some point if Soto stumbles, though the latter has also looked good with a 2.16 ERA of his own and nine saves in 10 chances.
May 24 2022Fulmer struck out all three batters he faced in Tuesday's loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer hadn't appeared in a game since Wednesday, as the Tigers are just 1-5 in their past six contests, so they haven't turned over too many leads to their more high-leverage relievers. The righty didn't show any rust, as he made quick work of the Twins in the seventh inning. Fulmer now has 14 strikeouts across 16.1 innings this season to go with a 3.31 ERA.
May 16 2022Fulmer (2-2) allowed one run on a hit and a walk to get credited with a blown save Monday against the Rays, though he was able to earn the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer started the bottom of the eighth inning out with a strikeout, but got into some trouble by allowing a double and a walk with one out. He then tossed a wild pitch, and the lead runner would later score on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2, though the Tigers would score in the top of the ninth to go back ahead. Fulmer has now blown two saves this season to go with his 3.14 ERA, and while closer Gregory Soto has seemingly been on thin ice lately, the latter did wrap up Monday's contest with a clean ninth inning. For now, Fulmer should stick in a setup role, with Soto the top option for saves in Detroit.
May 12 2022Fulmer (1-2) allowed two runs on a hit and a walk across an inning of work to take the loss Thursday against the Athletics. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer allowed his first home run of the season in the eighth inning, a two-run blast by Seth Brown, which broke open a 3-3 tie. The righty still has a solid 2.70 ERA, but with the 9-23 Tigers struggling to score many runs, the margin for error is thin for all of the team's pitchers. Despite the hiccup, Fulmer should remain an important reliever in Detroit, typically working in front of closer Gregory Soto.
May 1 2022Fulmer, who pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief in Saturday's win over the Dodgers, has yet to allow a run this season across 9.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was effective again Saturday and recorded his third hold of the season in the 5-1 Detroit victory. The righty also has one win and one save, which has boosted his fantasy value. Gregory Soto is still the primary closer, but Fulmer certainly has an important role in the Tigers' bullpen and will remain a solid fantasy asset if he keeps pitching like this.
Apr 15 2022Fulmer picked up the save, striking out one and pitching the ninth inning of a 2-1 win Friday in Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Gregory Soto received both of the save opportunities to start the season, manager A.J. Hinch called upon Fulmer to get the final three outs Friday. The righty needed just 11 pitches to retire the side in order and finished the night by striking out Hunter Dozier on three pitches. With Soto having pitched three of the last four games, Fullmer got the nod in the ninth. The 2016 American League Rookie of the Year was second on the Tigers last season with 14 saves and is next in line should Soto falter.
Apr 11 2022Fulmer (1-0) worked around a hit to pitch a scoreless inning of relief and earn the win Monday against the Red Sox. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was second on the Tigers with 14 saves last season, but he also scooped up five wins out of the bullpen. Gregory Soto earned the save Monday and should see the bulk of the chances this year, so Fulmer will have to typically settle for holds and the occasional win while working in the eighth inning. That limits the righty's fantasy appeal a bit, though things could change if he overtook Soto for the closer role.
Apr 9 2022Fulmer pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in Saturday's loss to the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer got the ninth inning but the Tigers were down 5-2 at the time, so closer Gregory Soto wasn't needed. Soto led the club with 18 saves last season, though Fulmer wasn't that far behind with 14 of his own. The former should see the bulk of the chances in 2022 with Fulmer typically getting high-leverage work in the eighth inning. His fantasy value would increase, of course, if he somehow supplanted Soto as the closer.
Mar 30 2022Fulmer has an 11.57 ERA and has allowed two home runs across three Grapefruit League games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a small sample size of just 2.1 innings, but Fulmer hasn't been sharp yet, which is further evidenced by his lack of strikeouts. He's also reportedly a few ticks off from his typical velocity, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The righty was solid for the Tigers last season with a 2.97 ERA and 14 saves, so he should get rolling at some point. However, with Gregory Soto and offseason addition Andrew Chafin around, Fulmer might not see as many save opportunities in 2022.
Mar 22 2022Fulmer and the Tigers agreed to terms on a one-year, $4.95 million contract Tuesday, avoiding arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer will get a raise of nearly $2 million in his final year of team control. That comes after a season in which he saved 14 games while posting career bests in ERA (2.97) and strikeout rate (24.6 percent).
Mar 16 2022Fulmer got added competition for the Tigers' primary setup role with the addition of Andrew Chafin on Wednesday, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gregory Soto is expected to be the team's closer heading into the season, which would leave Fulmer and Chafin in setup roles. Fulmer did have 14 saves and nine holds in 2021 to go with a 2.97 ERA, so he should definitely see high-leverage work moving forward. With Chafin being a lefty and Fulmer a righty, manager A.J. Hinch could just play the matchups with his top bullpen options. Either would see a boost in value if they replaced Soto as the closer at any point.
Oct 3 2021Fulmer worked around a hit to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and record the save in Sunday's win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The save was the 14th of the season for Fulmer, which was four behind Gregory Soto (finger) for the team lead. Fulmer had a nice rebound campaign in his second year back after Tommy John surgery, finishing the season with a 2.97 ERA and 73 strikeouts across 69.2 innings after recording an 8.78 ERA in 2020. The former starter looked comfortable in a relief role, and he should be a key member of Detroit's bullpen in 2022.
Oct 1 2021Fulmer nailed down the save Thursday against Minnesota after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been on fire recently and has tossed 10 straight scoreless outings, and in fact, he has given up just two runs over his last 18 innings of work from Aug. 22 onward since he allowed three runs against the Angels on Aug. 19. The right-hander has gone 13-for-17 in save chances this season and owns a 3.01 ERA on the year, a figure that would rank as a career-best mark for him.
Sep 25 2021Fulmer earned his 12th save of the season Saturday against the Royals, allowing one hit with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer came on with two outs in the eighth inning and immediately put out a fire, striking out Andrew Benintendi to strand a pair of inherited runners. The Tigers added two runs to their 3-1 lead in the bottom of the frame, and Fulmer finished things off in the ninth. Fulmer has adjusted well to his new relief role in 2021, logging a 3.06 ERA and 72:18 K:BB over 67.2 innings.
Sep 21 2021Fulmer earned the save against the White Sox on Tuesday after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing an inherited runner to score on an RBI single by Tim Anderson in the eighth, Fulmer returned in the ninth frame to finish things off. With two outs and a two-run lead, trouble loomed when Fulmer gave up a single to Eloy Jimenez and a walk to Yoan Moncada. The right-hander rebounded quickly by sending Leury Garcia down on strikes to finish off the victory. Fulmer now has 11 saves this season to go with a 3.12 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. With Gregory Soto out for the season, Fulmer looks to be the favorite for ninth-inning duties in Detroit.
Sep 17 2021Fulmer allowed a hit and struck out one batter in Friday's loss to the Rays. He was not charged with a run but was tagged with a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer took over in the ninth inning after Gregory Soto loaded the bases with no outs. All three runs would come in to score and Fulmer was charged with the blown save as the Rays forced extra innings. In 11 appearances since his last blown save on Aug. 19, the 28-year-old righty registered a 1.46 ERA with an 11:3 K:BB. Fulmer is sporting a 3.23 ERA with nine save this season.
Sep 15 2021Fulmer allowed a hit and struck out four to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-1 win over Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander protected a three-run lead over the last two innings of the contest to earn his ninth save of the year. He's posted 6.1 consecutive scoreless innings while adding three holds in his last five appearances. Fulmer has a 3.29 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 67:17 K:BB across 63 innings this year while earning a place in Detroit's closer committee, although he's often played second fiddle to Gregory Soto.
Aug 25 2021Fulmer (5-6) allowed one unearned run on a hit and two walks in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss in Wednesday's 3-2, extra-inning loss to the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The pair of free passes loaded the bases but were trivialized by Lars Nootbar's soft, game-winning single to right field. It was Fulmer's second loss in his last four appearances, though he's allowed only four earned runs in 13.2 innings since returning from the injured list in late July and has been a mostly reliable, high-leverage relief.
Aug 24 2021Fulmer pitched 1.1 scoreless innings to record the save in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals. He allowed one hit and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was called on to slow down the Cardinals in the bottom of the eighth and allowed two inherited runners to score on a Nolan Arenado double. However, the righty bounced back to strike out Yadier Molina, then cruised through the ninth inning to record his eighth save of the season in Detroit's 4-3 win. The 2016 Rookie of the Year has settled in nicely as a reliever this season after struggling mightily as a starter in 2020, albeit in just 10 games. Fulmer should continue to see save opportunities for the Tigers along with Gregory Soto from the left side.
Aug 19 2021Fulmer (5-5) allowed three runs on three hits in one inning of work to take the loss Thursday against the Angels. He walked one and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer came on in the seventh inning and allowed an inherited runner to score before getting out of the frame. However, things really got out of hand in the eighth as the Angels scored three times, with the key play a two-run home run by Max Stassi. Fulmer saw his ERA climb from 3.26 to 3.73 after the rough outing, though he should remain in the late-inning mix with the Tigers not having a dominant closer. Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero should also continue to see save opportunities.
Aug 15 2021Fulmer (5-4) earned the win in relief Saturday against Cleveland after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing one walk and fanning two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer needed just 14 pitches (eight strikes) to get the job done Saturday and now has tossed eight straight scoreless outings, a span in which he's also posted a strong 11:2 K:BB through 8.2 innings. The veteran has made just four starts this season but has worked almost exclusively out of the bullpen with strong results. He owns a 3.33 ERA with 53 strikeouts across 48.2 innings.
Aug 13 2021Fulmer recorded the save Thursday against the Orioles after tossing two scoreless innings, allowing two hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer had the daunting task to secure the final six outs of the game but handled it extremely well, closing things out with just 26 pitches (17 strikes) despite allowing two baserunners. The right-hander has tossed seven straight scoreless appearances and has reduced his ERA to 3.40, while it's also worth noting he's yet to allow an earned run since returning from the injured list in late July.
Aug 3 2021Fulmer worked around a hit to pitch a clean inning and record a hold in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer got the seventh inning in this one and after allowing a leadoff single, the righty settled in and struck out the side, allowing him to pick up his fifth hold of the season in the 4-2 win. Since returning from the injured list last week, Fulmer has pitched four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, though he's yet to see a save opportunity. Gregory Soto shut things down Tuesday for his 12th save of the season. Both pitchers should remain in the mix for saves depending on matchups.
Jul 29 2021Fulmer pitched a clean ninth inning while striking out the side in a non-save situation during Thursday's 6-2 win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The four-run lead meant Fulmer couldn't earn his seventh save of the season, but it's still a positive sign that he was asked to close out the game. The righty did it in impressive fashion as well with the three strikeouts, giving him 46 in 42 innings this year. Fulmer should remain in the end-game mix for Detroit, along with Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero.
Jul 27 2021Fulmer (neck) worked around a hit to pitch a scoreless inning in Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Twins. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was activated from the injured list before the game after missing a month due to a neck strain. The righty wasn't given a save opportunity in Tuesday's contest, as the Tigers rallied to take the lead in the 11th inning, but he should work his way back into Detroit's closer mix. Lefty Gregory Soto is also on hand, and the two figure to split the ninth inning role depending on matchups. Jose Cisnero may also factor into the end-game equation.
Jul 25 2021Fulmer (neck) will toss one inning for Triple-A Toledo on Sunday and is set to rejoin the Tigers on Monday in Minnesota, at which point he could be activated, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been out since June 27 but it sounds like his return is imminent. Once he joins the team Monday, he'll go through a full pregame workout before the medical staff makes a final decision. Even if he's not activated Monday, Fulmer should return early in the week assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Gregory Soto leads the Tigers with 11 saves, but Fulmer and his six saves should work back into the late-inning equation. The fact that he's a righty and Soto is a lefty could allow manager A.J. Hinch to mix and match in save situations depending on matchups.
Jul 21 2021Fulmer (neck) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer progressed to throwing bullpen sessions and live batting practice recently, and he'll now be able to return to game action with the minor-league club. The right-hander has been on the injured list since June 27 due to a right cervical spine strain in his neck, but he could return after a relatively brief rehab stint. Once Fulmer is cleared to rejoin the Tigers, he could reclaim a late-inning relief role with the major-league squad.
Jul 17 2021Fulmer (neck) will throw a bullpen this weekend before progressing to live batting practice, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager AJ Hinch said the righty could begin a rehab assignment if all goes well with the upcoming throwing sessions. Fulmer, who has been sidelined since June 27 with a neck strain, had carved out a late-inning relief role for himself before the injury and figures to rejoin the bullpen in a similar capacity once activated from the injured list.
Jul 3 2021Friday's visit to the doctor confirmed that Fulmer (neck) has no shoulder injury, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the news is a relief for Fulmer, he'll likely still be sidelined until after the All-Star break. Once healthy, the righty figures to rejoin Jose Cisnero and Gregory Soto at the high end of Detroit's bullpen.
Jul 2 2021Fulmer (spine) on Friday visited the same orthopedic surgeon who performed his Tommy John surgery in 2019, Jason Beck of MLB.comreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was placed on the injured list last weekend with a cervical spine strain, and while it's not immediately clear that he needs a procedure done, it's a bit ominous that he's meeting with an orthopedic surgeon. Manager A.J. Hinch said he just wants players to be "comfortable" when it comes to medical issues, but it's still worth monitoring whether Fulmer's issue might be something more serious. For now, he's eligible to come off the injured list Wednesday.
Jun 27 2021Fulmer was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right cervical spine strain in his neck. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was shaky in his outing against Houston in the second half of Saturday's twin bill, allowing back-to-back homers to Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa to blow a 2-0 lead. It's not clear if the neck issue arose Saturday or if Fulmer has been managing the problem for longer, but he'll be on the shelf for at least the next 10 days. Miguel Del Pozo was recalled from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding roster move.
Jun 26 2021Fulmer (4-4) allowed three runs on three hits in one inning Saturday in a blown save against Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer entered the game in the sixth to nail down a 2-0 lead and coughed it up on a pair of home runs by Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa. It was the second blown save in eight opportunities this season for Fulmer, who saw his ERA balloon from 3.46 to 4.05. He's put up a solid 42:11 K:BB through 40 innings and should remain in the high-leverage mix for the Tigers.
Jun 23 2021Fulmer worked a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation during Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Cardinals. He allowed a hit and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite the four-run lead, the Tigers didn't take any chances and turned to Fulmer, who has established himself as the club's primary late-game option. The righty has a 3.46 ERA and 42 strikeouts across 39 innings this season, and he's tied with Gregory Soto for the team lead with six saves. Both pitchers should remain in the closer mix, along with Jose Cisnero.
Jun 20 2021Fulmer allowed one walk and struck out three batters in a scoreless 10th inning Sunday, earning a save over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer put runners on the corners after a two-out walk to Shohei Ohtani but escaped with the 5-3 lead intact and picked up his sixth save of the season. It was a strong bounce-back outing after he gave up two runs in a close save Wednesday. The 28-year-old righty is now 6-for-7 in save chances with a 3.55 ERA this season.
Jun 16 2021Fulmer allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one in one inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 6-5 win over Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was fortunate to have a three-run lead to protect, as he gave up an RBI double to Whit Merrfield and an RBI single to Carlos Santana with two outs. The righty was able to strike out Salvador Perez to end the threat. Fulmer is now 5-for-6 in save chances with a 3.65 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 37:10 K:BB across 37 innings this year. Wednesday was just his second appearance since returning from a shoulder injury. Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero remain in the mix for save chances, although the latter worked a perfect eighth inning for a hold in this contest.
Jun 14 2021Fulmer (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander hasn't pitched since May 30 due to a strained right shoulder, and he'll rejoin the active roster Monday after a brief trip to the injured list. Fulmer opened the season in the rotation but has pitched well out of the bullpen with a 1.35 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 15:3 K:BB across 13.1 innings since May 5. The 28-year-old is 4-for-5 in save chances and should reclaim primary closer's duties now that he's healthy, though Jose Cisnero and Gregory Soto also remain in the mix.
Jun 8 2021Manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that the early diagnosis on Fulmer's strained shoulder was positive, and the Tigers are hopeful that the right-hander could return from the 10-day injured list in the minimum amount of time, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shoulder injuries always bring some level of concern for pitchers, but Fulmer appears fortunate to at least have avoided a significant one. Hinch's hope of Fulmer coming off the IL when first eligible Sunday may be overly optimistic, but the 28-year-old will at least have a shot at returning in the minimum amount of time if he's able to resume throwing off a mound in the next few days. After being moved to a relief role in early May, Fulmer almost immediately factored into the mix at closer for the Tigers, notching four saves in five chances before he was placed on the IL. Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero are expected to serve as the Tigers' primary late-inning options in the short term sans Fulmer.
Jun 6 2021Manager A.J. Hinch said Fulmer, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday, will undergo further tests on his strained right shoulder later in the day when the Tigers return to Detroit, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers don't believe Fulmer is dealing with structural damage to the shoulder, but the medical tests should provide more information about the extent of his injury and a potential timeline for his recovery. With Fulmer on the shelf for at least the next week and a half, Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero look like the best options for saves out of the Detroit bullpen.
Jun 4 2021Fulmer was unavailable for Friday's game against the White Sox due to fatigue, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers were in a tie game against the White Sox in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday, but manager A.J. Hinch revealed after the contest that Fulmer was dealing with fatigue and wasn't available. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will be available out of the bullpen Saturday.
May 23 2021Fulmer (3-3) was charged with the loss Sunday, allowing two runs on two hits without recording an out versus Kansas City. He also took a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer allowed an infield single to Whit Merrifield and a walkoff home run to Carlos Santana. The right-hander had only allowed one unearned run in his previous 10 innings before Sunday's disaster. Fulmer is now 4-for-5 in save chances with four holds, a 3.69 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB across 31.2 innings. He's now made 13 of his 17 appearances as a reliever after he was removed from the rotation earlier in May.
May 21 2021Fulmer struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save against Kansas City on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer made quick work of the Royals while protecting a 7-5 lead, needing just 12 pitches to finish off the game. The 28-year-old righty has now converted all four of his save chances this season with all of them coming in May. He owns a 3.13 ERA and 30:8 K:BB through 31.2 innings this season.
May 17 2021Fulmer allowed a hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning Monday, earning a save over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a leadoff single by Mitch Haniger, Fulmer quickly retired the next three batters to finish off the 4-1 win. He's converted all three of his save chances this season and owns a 3.34 ERA through 29.2 innings.
May 16 2021Fulmer (3-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 9-8 extra-inning victory over the Cubs, allowing one unearned run on two hits over two innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander entered the game in the ninth with the score tied 7-7, but it looked like he would get stuck with the loss when the Cubs pushed their ghost runner home in the top of the 10th. One blown save by Craig Kimbrel later, and Fulmer instead was the winner. The 28-year-old has taken to his new high-leverage bullpen role, securing two wins, two saves and a hold over his last five appearances with a 0.00 ERA and 7:2 K:BB in seven innings.
May 13 2021Fulmer recorded the final two outs of Thursday's win over the Royals to earn the save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gregory Soto, who recorded the save Wednesday, got the nod to begin the ninth, but he allowed two runs while retiring just a single batter. That forced manager A.J. Hinch to turn to Fulmer, and the righty delivered his second MLB save, with his other one coming earlier this month. Fulmer has looked comfortable in his bullpen role, and the Tigers seem to trust him in high-leverage spots. Soto should still be the closer moving forward despite the hiccup, but Fulmer is worth keeping an eye on.
May 10 2021Manager A.J. Hinch didn't want to definitively say that Fulmer would remain in the bullpen all season but he has been pleased with how the righty has performed in relief, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer had a rough 2020 campaign, posting an 8.78 ERA in 10 starts, but he's looked much better in relief this season, registering a 2.92 ERA across 12.1 innings out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old has found a little extra velocity as a reliever, and Hinch called him a "valuable weapon." To his credit, Fulmer has embraced the role, saying he wants to be "thrown into the fire" if he's going to remain in the bullpen. The Tigers may end up giving him some more starts this year, but for a team that has struggled to develop reliable bullpen options, Fulmer could quickly establish himself as one of its most trusted relievers.
May 8 2021Fulmer (2-2) earned the win in relief Saturday against the Twins after pitching 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up one hit and one walk while fanning three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer recorded the final two outs of the fifth inning and cruised his way until the end of the seventh, allowing just two baserunners and tossing 28 of his 47 pitches for strikes. Fulmer has started in four of his 10 appearances but has been effective as a reliever so far. He has gone five straight appearances allowing two or fewer runs and has now recorded two straight scoreless appearances.
May 5 2021Fulmer retired the final two batters of Wednesday's 6-5, 10-inning win over the Red Sox to record the save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gregory Soto started the 10th inning with a strikeout but then allowed back-to-back singles, so manager A.J. Hinch turned to Fulmer with the right-handed Hunter Renfroe coming up. Renfroe reached on an error, but Fulmer buckled down and retired the final two batters to record his first MLB save. The 28-year-old started Tuesday's game but lasted less than an inning, so he was able to help the team out after five other pitchers were used Wednesday. Fulmer is still slated to start next Tuesday against Kansas City, though Hinch may juggle his rotation to give the righty a little extra rest.
May 4 2021Fulmer (0-2) allowed four runs (two earned) across just 0.2 innings and took the loss Tuesday against the Red Sox. He gave up four hits and a walk with no strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers were likely expecting a short start from Fulmer but this qualifies as a disappointment, as the righty couldn't even escape the first inning, making it his briefest appearance of the season. Fulmer's 4.57 ERA is an improvement from the 8.78 mark he recorded last year, but his inability to work deep into games limits his fantasy appeal. He's scheduled to take the mound again next Tuesday against the Royals and will look for better results.
May 3 2021Fulmer will start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer had been available out of the bullpen recently, but he'll draw his fourth start of the season in Tuesday's series opener against Boston. The right-hander hasn't lasted longer than five innings in any of his seven appearances this year, and he's posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 21 innings.
Apr 28 2021Fulmer will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday and Thursday in Chicago, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer and Tarik Skubal had been piggybacking, but Skubal will work as a traditional starter Friday while Fulmer shifts to a less rigid role in the short term. He has pitched very well this season, logging a 3.32 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 17:4 K:BB in 19 innings, but he has not been used in a fantasy-friendly role.
Apr 25 2021Fulmer allowed one hit and two walks while striking out two in three scoreless innings in Sunday's loss to the Royals. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer only threw 36 pitches Sunday since he was pitching on three days' rest, but the right-hander held Kansas City in check to begin the game. Fulmer has made six appearances (three starts) to begin the season, and he's posted a 3.32 ERA and 0.84 WHIP in 19 innings during that time. He lines up to make his next start on the road against the Yankees on Friday.
Apr 21 2021Fulmer (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts over four innings. He took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was initially only expected to work three innings at most, but his pitch count was low enough to stay in. That turned out to be a mistake, as the Pirates tagged him for three runs in the fourth inning. The right-hander had a 3.94 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 15 strikeouts across 16 innings this season. Fulmer is still working up his pitch count -- he threw 60 pitches Wednesday (40 strikes). He could start on short rest versus the Royals on Sunday, but he could be piggybacked again as he was against the Pirates.
Apr 20 2021Fulmer's scheduled start Tuesday was postponed and he will start Game 1 of a doubleheader Wednesday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer will get an extra day of rest and will have a better chance of securing a win in a seven-inning game Wednesday. He will pitch opposite Tyler Anderson.
Apr 14 2021Fulmer (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits across five innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Astros. He walked one and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was solid if not spectacular against a potent Houston lineup, and it earned the righty his first win in the majors since 2018. It's been a long road back for Fulmer, who missed all of 2019 following Tommy John surgery then logged only 27.2 innings last season as the Tigers eased him back into action. With Julio Teheran (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list, Fulmer could stick in the rotation for a bit, though Spencer Turnbull's return from the COVID-19 injured list will complicate matters. For now, Fulmer is lined up to start again Tuesday against Pittsburgh, and he'll look to build on this positive outing.
Apr 11 2021Fulmer is slated to start Wednesday's game in Houston, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Derek Holland received the first chance to replace the injured Julio Teheran (shoulder) in the rotation earlier this weekend in Cleveland, he failed to capitalize on the opportunity, working only 2.2 innings while giving up three runs on four hits. Fulmer, meanwhile, thrived as a mop-up man behind Holland, striking out five over four innings of one-run ball. On the heels of that impressive relief outing, Fulmer will get the starting nod over Holland, but he may need another strong showing versus Houston to guarantee himself future turns through the rotation. The Tigers will eventually return Spencer Turnbull from the COVID-19 injured list, and he could end up bumping one of Fulmer or youngsters Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal from the rotation.
Apr 10 2021Fulmer pitched four innings in relief during Friday's loss to Cleveland. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Julio Teheran (shoulder) was scratched from his start Friday and subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list, so the Tigers made it a bullpen game started by Derek Holland. Fulmer pitched the final four innings of the contest, and it's noteworthy because the righty never went beyond three innings last season, which was his first year back after Tommy John surgery. Fulmer looked good in the longer appearance, and while he's currently in the Detroit bullpen, he could work his way back into the rotation at some point.
Apr 4 2021Fulmer pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout to record a hold in Saturday's win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been moved to the bullpen to start 2021, and his first relief appearance of the season was a success. The righty could still work his way back into the rotation at some point, but he didn't pitch very deep into games last season in his return from Tommy John surgery, and it doesn't look like he'll do so in the early going this year.
Mar 26 2021Fulmer will open the season as a reliever for the Tigers, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old was competing for a spot at the back end of Detroit's starting rotation, but he'll instead open the season in the bullpen. Fulmer has exclusively operated as a starter during his four years in the big leagues, but he's now set to serve in a multi-inning role as a reliever.
Mar 21 2021Fulmer pitched three scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He allowed one hit and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer had allowed 10 earned runs across four innings in his previous two spring appearances, so Sunday's performance was a welcome change. The righty still has a 10.00 ERA in Grapefruit League play, and he's no lock for the rotation this year, as the Tigers have some decisions to make with players such as Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and non-roster invitee Julio Teheran. Matthew Boyd and Spencer Turnbull should have rotation spots set in stone, though the latter is expected to be out the rest of camp due to COVID-19 protocols and could miss a turn or two early in the season.
Mar 18 2021Fulmer could end up in Detroit's bullpen depending on which pitchers make the Opening Day roster, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was exclusively a starter last season, though he never went beyond three innings in a start in his first year back after Tommy John surgery. However, the Tigers have a handful of options for the back of their rotation, including youngsters Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal, as well as non-roster invitee Julio Teheran. Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull and Jose Urena also should be locked into rotation spots. Mize and Skubal could both start the season in the minors, but if they don't, Fulmer might get squeezed from the rotation to make room.
Mar 11 2021Fulmer allowed seven runs on five hits across two innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. He walked two and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer allowed three home runs in his two innings of work, and he saw his spring ERA climb to 15.75 in the process. The righty returned from Tommy John surgery last season and was eased back into action, as he never went beyond three innings in a start. Fantasy managers are hoping to see Fulmer stretched out more in 2021, though he won't have much fantasy appeal if gets hit as hard as he did Thursday.
Mar 7 2021Fulmer pitched two scoreless innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. He allowed one hit and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was making his first spring training start since 2019, as he was still recovering from Tommy John surgery this time last year. With the chance to get a full Grapefruit League slate under his belt, the 27-year-old may be able to work a little bit deeper into games this season, as he never worked more than three innings in any of his 10 appearances last year.
Mar 6 2021Fulmer (personal) is starting Saturday's spring game against the Orioles, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was away from the team for several days following the birth of his child, but he'll take the mound to begin Saturday's contest. Barring any setbacks, the right-hander will have plenty of time to build up in time for Opening Day.
Mar 3 2021Fulmer (personal) is scheduled to start Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has been away from the team for a few days following the birth of his child, but he is set to rejoin the Tigers this weekend. Barring any hiccups, he will have plenty of time to build up his pitch count before Opening Day.
Feb 27 2021Fulmer departed spring training following the birth of his second child Saturday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was expected to start Monday's Grapefruit League game, but he'll no longer do so after leaving spring training. Kyle Funkhouser will start in his place Monday, but Fulmer will presumably rejoin the team in the coming days and should still have plenty of time to prepare for the regular season.
Feb 25 2021Fulmer will start Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer will be making his first spring training start since 2019, as he was still recovering from Tommy John surgery this time last year. The Tigers handled the 27-year-old very cautiously in his return from the surgery, but perhaps he's allowed to take on an increased workload in 2021.
Jan 12 2021Fulmer agreed to a one-year, $3.1 million contract with the Tigers on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old struggled in 10 starts during 2020 with an 8.78 ERA and 2.06 WHIP over 27.2 innings, and he'll remain with Detroit to begin 2021. Fulmer posted a 3.45 ERA in 323.2 innings over his first two big-league seasons, but he's labored over the past two years with a 5.40 ERA across 160 frames. He may need a strong showing in spring training to earn a spot in the starting rotation.
Sep 24 2020Fulmer allowed four earned runs on seven hits across 2.1 innings in his start Thursday against the Royals. He didn't have any walks or strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer wrapped up his 2020 season with another rough outing, and he'll finish the campaign with an unsightly 8.78 ERA. The righty never pitched past the third inning, but in his first year back after Tommy John surgery, he was understandably handled with caution. Still, it would have been nice to see Fulmer have a little more success across his 27.2 innings. The 27-year-old will now turn his attention toward 2021 and seeing if he can build up his arm strength further to go deeper into games.
Sep 18 2020Fulmer pitched three scoreless innings and did not factor into the decision in Friday's 1-0 loss to Cleveland. He allowed one hit and a walk, while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was a nice rebound effort for Fulmer, who had allowed nine earned runs across five innings in his last two starts. The righty still isn't being allowed to work very deep into games in his first year back after Tommy John surgery, as he's yet to pitch past the third inning this season. Fulmer will carry a bloated 8.17 ERA into his next outing, which is scheduled for Thursday against the Royals, and he figures to have a workload restriction once again.
Sep 12 2020Fulmer (0-2) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one across 2.2 innings to take the loss Saturday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer struggled immediately, surrendering three runs in the opening frame. He turned in a scoreless second inning before being chased from the game after surrendering two additional earned runs in the third. Fulmer has struggled for the majority of the season, as he's never gotten more than nine outs in an outing and has surrendered more than three earned runs in five of his eight appearances. He's projected to make his next appearance Friday against Cleveland.
Sep 7 2020Fulmer (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits and a walk across 2.1 innings to take the loss Monday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer looked pretty good through the first two innings but ran into trouble in the third, when he allowed a solo home run to Ryan Jeffers, followed by a double, a walk and a single before getting the hook. Daniel Norris then allowed all three inherited runners to score on a double by Eddie Rosario. Fulmer has still yet to last more than three innings in a start this season, and he threw just 47 pitches Monday, down from the season-high 65 he recorded in his previous outing. The Tigers are clearly being cautious with the 27-year-old in his first season back after Tommy John surgery, which limits his fantasy appeal. Fulmer lines up to face the White Sox in his next start Saturday, and he'll likely have a limited workload once again.
Sep 1 2020Fulmer allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six across three innings Tuesday against the Brewers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a mixed bag from Fulmer, as he struck out a season-best six batters on the strength of 15 called strikes and seven swinging strikes on 65 total pitches. On the other hand, he walked multiple batters for the third time in his past four outings and needed 65 pitches to complete three innings. Still, it was a step forward in results for Fulmer, though he has yet to work more than three frames in any outing this season. He's currently projected to take the mound next on Sunday at Minnesota.
Aug 26 2020Fulmer allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one across three innings Wednesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer held the Cubs scoreless through two innings, but ran into trouble in his final frame. He surrendered a free pass to the leadoff hitter and then consecutive singles later in the inning that allowed both of his charged runs to cross the plate. Fulmer has yet to work more than three innings in any outing this season, and has amassed an ugly 8.79 ERA across 14.1 innings.
Aug 22 2020Fulmer allowed five runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four across three innings. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of Fulmer's struggles came in the second frame, when he quickly allowed the first two hitters on base via a hit batsman and a walk. Those two would come around to score along with a third before Fulmer was finally able to escape. His struggles carried over into the next inning, when he served up a two-run homer to Franmil Reyes to extend the Indians' lead to 5-0. Fulmer has yet to last more than three innings in any of his four outings and his spot in the rotation may not last much longer once the Tigers are able to return some guys from the injured list within the next few weeks.
Aug 16 2020Fulmer allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over 2.2 innings in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Indians. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was able to work around a Francisco Lindor double to toss a scoreless first inning but allowed a homer to Franmil Reyes to lead off the second. The righty was bit by the long ball again an inning later when Lindor followed a Jose Ramirez walk with a two-run shot to give Cleveland a 3-0 lead. It marked yet another short start for Fulmer (58 pitches), who continues to be used cautiously in his return from Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old is slated to face the Indians again Friday.
Aug 10 2020Fulmer opened Monday's win over the White Sox by tossing three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was a step forward for Fulmer, who allowed four runs on five hits and a walk across 2.2 innings on July 27, his only other appearance so far this season. In that first outing, Fulmer was tagged for three home runs, and he did a much better job of keeping the ball in play and limiting damage Monday. The righty is still being treated cautiously in his return from Tommy John surgery, as he left Monday's game after logging just 57 pitches. He figures to work as an opener again Sunday against Cleveland.
Aug 9 2020Fulmer is slated to work as the opener in Monday's game against the White Sox, with Daniel Norris following him, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer has only made one appearance so far this season, as he had a start rained out last weekend, and then the Tigers and Cardinals postponed an entire series due to a coronavirus outbreak within the St. Louis organization. Because of the long layoff between outings and the fact that he's still building up stamina in his first season back after Tommy John surgery, Fulmer isn't expected to work too far into Monday's game. Norris is expected to handle the middle innings as the team's primary pitcher. Manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that he'd like to get three innings out of each pitcher.
Aug 1 2020Fulmer won't pitch Saturday against the Reds as the game has been postponed due to rain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer had been scheduled to start (or at least open) for the second time this year and was looking to bounce back from his season debut, when he allowed four runs in just 2.2 innings against the Royals. The game will be made up as part of a seven-inning doubleheader Sunday, though Fulmer isn't scheduled to start either game.
Jul 27 2020Fulmer allowed four runs on five hits and a walk across two innings in a no-decision Monday against the Royals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first MLB start since 2018, Fulmer was done in by the long ball, as he allowed home runs to Maikel Franco, Whit Merrifield and Salvador Perez. The Tigers capped Fulmer at 47 pitches, and the righty figures to have his workload carefully monitored in his first year back after Tommy John surgery, which limits his fantasy appeal. He lines up to start again Sunday against the Reds, though he'll likely face another innings/pitch count restriction in that outing.
Jul 26 2020Fulmer will serve as the opener Monday against the Royals, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old is beginning the season with workload limitations as he returns from Tommy John surgery. It's unclear exactly what those limitations are, though Fulmer reached at least three innings of live batting practice in summer camp. The Tigers haven't officially said who is expected to pitch behind the right-hander.
Jul 23 2020The Tigers reinstated Fulmer (elbow) from the 45-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction was merely procedural after manager Ron Gardenhire confirmed a day earlier that Fulmer would be a part of the Tigers' Opening Day rotation, operating as a "opener type" in front of a primary pitcher, most likely Tyler Alexander. Fulmer should gradually have his restrictions loosened in his subsequent turns, as the Tigers are just exercising caution with his usage coming off his March 2019 Tommy John surgery.
Jul 22 2020Manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday that Fulmer (elbow) will begin the season in an "opener-type" role, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gardenhire has alluded to the 27-year-old opening the season with a limited workload throughout training camp, so this announcement hardly comes as a surprise. Fulmer should work his way to a traditional starter's workload eventually, but he'll start the season being limited to a few innings. Tyler Alexander is a likely option to fill innings during Fulmer's shorter outings.
Jul 20 2020Fulmer (elbow) is expected to open the season as a piggyback starter, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer says he's ready to start after working his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in March of 2019, though the Tigers seemingly won't ask him to handle a starter's workload right away. Fulmer is already a relatively uninteresting fantasy option, as he posted a 4.69 ERA and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate in his most recent healthy season back in 2018, and he becomes even less interesting if his innings are limited.
Jul 18 2020Fulmer (elbow) believes he's ready to be a part of the Tigers' rotation, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Players being optimistic about their own readiness is hardly a new phenomenon, though there aren't too many reasons to doubt Fulmer's self-assessment here. It's now been 16 months since he underwent Tommy John surgery, a fairly typical length of time for getting back into game action. He threw three innings in live batting practice Saturday, meaning he's probably just a session or two from being able to handle a typical starter's workload. Whether or not he has broad fantasy relevance is another matter, as his 4.69 ERA and 19.7 percent strikeout rate his most recent season back in 2018 were far from exciting.
Jul 13 2020Fulmer's (elbow) role at the start of the season remains unclear, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The delayed season has bought Fulmer the time to return from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in March of 2020, without missing any more time. The Tigers may not be comfortable giving him a starting role right away, however, with manager Ron Gardenhire mentioning the possibility of using him as an opener until he builds up stamina. The 27-year-old was an unexciting option in his most recent healthy season, posting a 4.69 ERA and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate back in 2018, and his stock takes a further hit if he winds up making only eight or nine true starts this season.
Jul 8 2020Fulmer (elbow) tossed two innings in an intrasquad game Wednesday, allowing an unearned run and striking out one, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was Fulmer's first action in a game setting since spring training of 2019, so while it was just a scrimmage, it was good to see the righty on the mound. The team didn't have a radar gun on him, meaning no velocity readings to gauge quite yet. Fulmer will continue to build up his arm during summer camp, and the team could use him in a long-relief role to begin the season to limit his workload after he missed all of last year.
Jul 5 2020Fulmer (elbow) appears to have lost some weight during his rehab from Tommy John surgery, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear exactly how much weight Fulmer shed, but onlookers at Detroit's summer camp noted that the 27-year-old appeared to be in good shape. "I just feel more efficient," Fulmer said. "I feel like I'm using my body in better ways, putting less stress on the elbow and less stress on the knee, just to be more efficient and not be as violent. Putting my body in the best position." Physical conditioning will be critical for Fulmer, who last pitched in the majors in 2018. The Tigers have said the righty is ready to go, but they figure to carefully monitor his innings and could have him pitch out of the bullpen to start the season to reduce his workload.
Jul 3 2020Fulmer (elbow) threw a bullpen session as the Tigers resumed workouts Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer underwent Tommy John surgery back in March of 2019. He was originally expected to miss roughly half of this season, but the delayed start means he should be ready to go once play resumes, albeit presumably on a carefully managed workload. The 27-year-old righty owns a solid 3.81 ERA through three MLB seasons, though his ERA jumped considerably each year, coming in at a career-worst 4.69 in 2018.
Jun 24 2020Tigers general manager Al Avila said Wednesday that Fulmer (elbow) has been cleared for full baseball activities and will be included on Detroit's 60-man roster when the MLB season resumes in late July, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Back in spring training, the Tigers placed Fulmer on the 60-day injured list with the knowledge that his recovery from his March 2019 Tommy John surgery would extend through at least late May. The right-hander has been able to advance through a throwing program without incident in the three-plus months since the league-wide shutdown, with Avila noting that Fulmer has been able to pitch in simulated games of up to three innings, per Jason Beck of MLB.com. The Tigers will still have to formally activate Fulmer from the IL, but the expanded roster from 40 men to 60 should make that transaction merely a procedural one. Detroit is still likely to monitor the 27-year-old's workload carefully coming off a major surgery, but expect the 2016 AL Rookie of the Year to immediately reclaim a spot in the Tigers' Opening Day rotation. In his last season in 2018, Fulmer posted a 4.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 110:46 K:BB over 132.1 innings.
May 5 2020Tigers pitching coach Rick Anderson said Tuesday that there's "no chance" Fulmer (elbow) will be cleared to face hitters soon, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. "I mean, you never say never, but I don't see it," Anderson said. "He might be ready to see hitters, but I believe when we start our second spring training, whenever that will be, that would be the time to see Michael face hitters." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Now in the 14th month of his recovery from last year's Tommy John surgery, Fulmer is throwing regularly off the mound and has previously said that he's "100 percent pain-free," but the Tigers aren't inclined to rush him coming off a major arm operation. Instead, Fulmer will likely just gradually increase the intensity and frequency of his bullpen sessions at the Tigers' spring training facility until full-squad workouts resume, perhaps at some point in June. Fulmer is still hopeful to slot back into the Detroit rotation later this summer, but the possibility of no minor-league season could deprive him of opportunities to prove his health and build up his workload in rehab games, which may result in his recovery timeline being extended.
Apr 13 2020Fulmer (elbow) is throwing off a mound at the Tigers' spring training facility and could be ready to join the team when the delayed regular season is able to begin, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer underwent Tommy John surgery before the start of last season and it was expected that he'd be out until around midseason this year. However, with play suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 27-year-old may actually be ready to go by the new Opening Day, depending on when it is. Tigers' manager Ron Gardenhire said that Fulmer is "doing great" and is ramping up his activity, though the righty will still need to face live batters before he is cleared to return.
Mar 23 2020Fulmer should be able to continue his rehab work while the MLB season is delayed and is likely still on track for a return to the majors after midseason, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While team activities are significantly hampered by the coronavirus, most of Fulmer's rehab work is solo, meaning he should be able to make progress during the delay. The 27-year-old has yet to resume throwing at maximum effort, but the Tigers have no reason to rush him at this point. He will likely continue to slowly ramp up his throwing program at the team's spring facility in the absence of any games.
Feb 17 2020Fulmer (elbow) said he hopes to throw off a mound sometime in mid-March as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was recently transferred to the 60-day injured list as the team made room for the newly signed Cameron Maybin. Fulmer isn't expected to debut until after midseason, and the Tigers will no doubt be cautious with the 26-year-old righty after he missed the entire 2019 campaign.
Feb 12 2020Fulmer (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers needed to remove someone from the 40-man roster in order to sign Cameron Maybin to a major-league deal. Fulmer was the natural choice, as he isn't expected to return from Tommy John surgery before midseason.
Jan 23 2020Fulmer (elbow) is throwing from 90 feet on flat ground, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer is slowly working his way back to full strength after undergoing Tommy John surgery in late March. The right-hander is expected to increase his throwing distance to 120 feet next week before hopefully progressing to mound work thereafter. The hope is that Fulmer will be ready to return at some point this summer.
Jan 6 2020Fulmer (elbow) signed a one-year, $2.8 million contract with the Tigers on Monday, avoiding arbitration. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer was forced to miss the entire 2019 campaign after going under the knife in March, but he's expected back at some point during the 2020 season, likely in July if all goes according to plan. He was cleared to play catch in mid-December and will continue to ramp up his throwing as appropriate. Fulmer last pitched for the Tigers in 2018, posting a 4.69 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with a 110:46 K:BB over 132.1 innings of work in 24 starts.
Dec 10 2019Vice president of baseball operations Al Avila said Tuesday that Fulmer (elbow) resumed playing catch and feels good, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Fulmer missed the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in late March, so any positive progress in his recovery is welcome news. The 26-year-old won't have a firm timetable for his return until much later in the recovery process, but at this point he's targeting a return in July.
Oct 31 2019Fulmer (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is expected to miss the first half of the 2020 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in March, but will be on the 40-man roster to start the offseason. The recovery timeline for Fulmer's procedure is usually 12-to-18 months.
Sep 25 2019The Tigers aren't counting on Fulmer (elbow) to make his 2020 debut until after the All-Star break, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Ron Gardenhire noted that the Tigers will check back in with Fulmer in spring training and see where he stands in his recovery from Tommy John surgery before a more definitive target date for his season debut is established. The procedure typically carries a recovery period of around 12-to-18 months, and the Tigers are apparently eyeing the long end of that timeline for Fulmer's return. Fulmer underwent surgery in late March after a ligament tear in his elbow was detected following his third Grapefruit League outing.
Jul 21 2018Fulmer (oblique) underwent an MRI which revealed a Grade 1 strain of his left oblique, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. All things considered it's good news for Fulmer, with a Grade 1 strain being a mild diagnosis. The 25-year-old is still likely to miss multiple turns in the rotation and currently has no official timetable for his return, but he'll start by resting for a week before resuming baseball activities, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Long-reliever Blaine Hardy will re-enter the Tigers' starting rotation in his absence.
Jul 20 2018Fulmer (oblique) will likely be on the shelf for longer than the minimum after suffering a left oblique strain Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Fulmer injured his oblique during a light bullpen session. Manager Ron Gardenhire stated "it's going to put him out for a while," so Detroit will be without one of their top arms for at least the next few weeks. More updates on his status figure to surface as he makes strides towards a recovery.
Jul 20 2018Fulmer was placed on the 10-day disabled list due to a left oblique strain Friday.According to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, Fulmer suffered the injury during his standard mid-week bullpen session. Because of this issue, Fulmer will be required to miss at least one turn through the rotation, though in all likelihood he will be sidelined for the rest of July. Expect more details to come to light over the next couple hours regarding his condition and a timetable for his return. In a corresponding move, the Tigers recalled Victor Alcantara from the minors.
Jul 14 2018Fulmer (3-9) took the loss Saturday, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and two walks over 4.2 innings while striking out two as the Tigers fell 9-1 to the Astros. The stinker of an outing wasn't the result of bad luck or cheap contact -- half the hits the right-hander gave up went for extra bases, including homers by Josh Reddick and Evan Gattis. Fulmer's stumbling into the All-Star break, posting a 5.46 ERA while losing four of his last five starts.
Jul 8 2018Fulmer (3-8) took the loss Sunday against the Rangers despite allowing only three runs (two earned) over seven innings. He gave up five hits and three walks, and struck out six.All the damage against Fulmer came in the first two innings, including a solo home run by Jurickson Profar two batters into the game, but the 25-year-old righty settled in after that. However, the Tigers could muster just four hits and no runs, so Fulmer was saddled with a tough-luck loss. After a rough May (6.32 ERA in six starts), Fulmer has been much better since the start of June, posting a 3.47 ERA over his past seven outings. He'll get a tough test in his next scheduled start, which is slated for Saturday in Houston.
Jul 8 2018Fulmer (3-8) was tagged with the loss in Sunday's 3-0 defeat to the Rangers for Detroit, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking three. It was a solid outing from Fulmer, but he ended up getting dealt his eighth defeat of the season as his teammates were shut out by Austin Bibens-Dirkx and the Rangers bullpen. His 3-8 record isn't pretty, but Fulmer has been pitching well lately, as he's thrown at least six innings in six of his last seven starts, posting a 39:12 K:BB over that span. He'll take the mound next against the Astros on the road next Saturday.
Jul 3 2018Fulmer allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings during Tuesday's loss to the Cubs. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. Most of the trouble for Fulmer came during the fifth inning as he allowed all three runs on four hits -- including three doubles -- but he otherwise limited the damage despite regularly putting men on base. The 25-year-old has a 4.22 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with a 85:33 K:BB across 100.1 innings, and next lines up to faces the Rangers on Sunday.
Jun 28 2018Fulmer (3-7) took the loss despite a solid effort Thursday against the A's. He allowed four runs over 8.0 innings while notching five strikeouts and no walks.A rough third inning sunk Fulmer as he coughed up three runs in the frame and gave up one more in the fourth on a Chad Pinder double. His run support was essentially non-existent as the Tigers did not register a single run after Nick Castellanos' two-run shot in the first. Fulmer's command was strong; he threw 79 of his 110 pitches for strikes and only allowed two baserunners in his final four innings. He's lined up to face Kyle Hendricks and the Cubs on Tuesday.
Jun 20 2018Fulmer (3-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings while striking out nine as the Tigers fell 5-3 to the Reds. The right-hander cruised through five scoreless innings and seemed poised for a quality start before Scooter Gennett and Eugenio Suarez hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the sixth, helping to chase Fulmer from the game. He still has a 3.16 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB over his last four starts and 25.2 innings, and Fulmer will look to get back in the win column Tuesday at home against the A's.
Jun 14 2018Fulmer (3-5) earned the win in seven innings Thursday against the Twins, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while striking out four. The right-hander again fell short in the punchout column but worked efficiently, logging 62 strikes in 92 pitches. He's now allowed just one walk in his past two starts -- a noteworthy improvement, considering he gave out at least three free passes in five of his previous six. Fulmer will not have to deal with a designated hitter in his next scheduled assignment Wednesday at the Reds.
Jun 9 2018Fulmer didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 4-1 loss to Cleveland, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings while striking out seven. The right-hander has been inconsistent this season, but he was sharp Friday, throwing 71 of 108 pitches for strikes and delivering his sixth quality start of the year. Fulmer will take a 4.40 ERA into his next outing Wednesday at home against the Twins.
Jun 3 2018Fulmer (2-5) took the loss Sunday against the Blue Jays, as he gave up four earned runs over six innings of work. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out three.Fulmer was better than he was in his last start, when he allowed five runs over just 3.1 innings, but the righty still took his second straight loss. After starting the year with a 2.80 ERA across his first six starts, Fulmer has posted a 6.90 ERA across his subsequent six starts. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, which is scheduled for Friday against the Indians.
May 29 2018Fulmer (2-4) allowed five runs on six hits and four walks across 3.1 innings while taking the loss Tuesday against the Angels. He recorded one strikeout.Fulmer struggled in the second inning, allowing an RBI single to Luis Valbuena before Ian Kinsler hit a three-run home run to left. He lasted into the fourth but was removed after walking a pair behind a solo shot from Valbuena. This season home runs have hurt Fulmer, who's allowed multiple home runs in three of the four starts in which he's allowed five earned runs or more. He's now done just that in three of his last five starts and will take a hefty 4.60 ERA into his next scheduled start Sunday against the Blue Jays.
May 23 2018Fulmer (2-3) got the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings against the Twins. The win was his first since the second start of the season back on April 7. Fulmer finished his day one out shy of qualifying for a quality start, but he labored just to get as far as he did. He tossed a season-high 112 pitches and allowed a walk to the last batter he faced before getting yanked. The 25-year-old continues to struggle a bit with walks (3.1 BB/9), but he appears to have settled down following a couple of rocky starts earlier in the month. He's due to take on the Angels on Tuesday next time out.
May 18 2018Fulmer didn't factor into the decision against Seattle on Friday, giving up three earned runs on three hits, striking out seven and walking two as the Tigers fell to the Mariners 5-4.Fulmer was coming off a pair of rough outings that saw him give up 11 earned runs over his last 10 innings but he was able to bounce back and log a quality start in this contest to bring his ERA to 4.35 and his WHIP to 1.28 over 51.2 innings. He'll look to build off the solid showing in his next start, which will see him take on the Twins in a road matchup next Wednesday.
May 12 2018Fulmer (1-3) took the loss to the Mariners in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing six runs on five hits -- including two homers -- over 4.1 innings. He struck out five and walked three.Seattle touched Fulmer up for a pair of homers in the fourth and fifth innings, sinking the right-hander to his third loss on the campaign. Fulmer was behind in counts throughout most of the evening, throwing first-pitch strikes to just 11 of 21 batters faced. He's seen his ERA jump from 2.80 to 4.37 over his last two starts with 11 combined earned runs allowed in 10 innings. The 25-year-old will look to trend back in the right direction with the walks and homers, starting in a rematch against these Mariners on the road next week.
May 8 2018Fulmer struck out seven but allowed five runs on four hits and three walks through 5.2 innings in a no-decision Monday against Texas.Fulmer's only blemish through five frames was a Nomar Mazara home run in the second inning, but he was undone in the sixth as he couldn't handle the third time through the order. The four-run frame included a walk and a pair of doubles. Entering Monday's contest, hitters were 13-for-36 (.361) with a walk, a double and a home run when facing Fulmer for the third time. The necessary endurance and deception to get through the lineup a third time is often one of the toughest hurdles for young pitchers to get over, but Fulmer will have to do it if he wants to make the next step. He'll get another chance Sunday against the Mariners.
May 2 2018Fulmer pitched six innings and struck out five while allowing a pair of runs on six hits and two walks in Wednesday's no-decision versus the Rays.Fulmer's day got off to a rocky start with a bases-loaded jam in the first and a couple of baserunners in the second, but he escaped relatively unscathed and settled down the rest of the way. Partially due to the labored opening frames, he needed 109 pitches just to get through six innings -- the first time he's exceeded the 100-pitch threshold this season. The end result was a third straight quality start, and he's mostly recovered from his one bad start (nine runs, six earned) against Cleveland. Fulmer will carry a 2.80 ERA when he takes on the Rangers on Monday.
Apr 26 2018Fulmer tossed six scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision in Thursday's 1-0 loss to the Pirates. He gave up four hits and a walk while striking out nine.Fulmer has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his five starts this year and now has a 2.76 ERA, but he has just one win to show for it, as the Tigers have not been providing him much run support. The young righty has a solid matchup on tap Wednesday against the Rays, and if he keeps pitching like this, he stands a pretty good chance of grabbing some wins along the way.
Apr 20 2018Fulmer took a no decision after allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over seven innings during the Tigers' win over the Royals in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader.Fulmer bounced back after giving up nine runs (six earned) over three innings to the Indians last week, although the Tigers were unable to retake the lead until JaCoby Jones' walkoff home run in the 10th inning. Besides the blow-up start, the 25-year-old has given up only three runs over 20.1 innings (three starts) this season.
Apr 20 2018Fulmer is scheduled to start Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader with the Royals.Jake Junis is getting the nod for Kansas City, while the nightcap will feature Daniel Norris and Jason Hammel. After racking up 13.1 innings over his first two starts, Fulmer only made it through three frames against Cleveland in his last start April 12 at Progressive Field. He hasn't recorded more than four strikeouts in any of his first three starts, and his early drop in strikeout rate (12.7% K%, 5.0 K/9) is backed by a career-low 6.7 percent swinging-strike rate.
Apr 12 2018Fulmer (1-2) allowed nine runs (six earned) on eight hits over three innings in Thursday's loss to the Indians. He struck out two.Fulmer entered Thursday's contest riding a 12.1 inning scoreless streak, but that feat was quickly undone as the 25-year-old yielded four extra-base hits in the first two frames, including a leadoff solo shot from Francisco Lindor. His three innings of work marked the second-shortest outing of his career, while the six earned runs allowed tied his career high. Fulmer also induced just two swings-and-misses in his 72 pitches. He'll look to put this disastrous outing behind him when he toes the rubber Wednesday against Baltimore.
Apr 7 2018Fulmer (1-1) picked up the win over the White Sox on Saturday, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings and allowing six hits and three walks while striking out four.It wasn't the sharpest performance from Fulmer -- he threw 56 of 92 pitches for strikes and generated only nine swinging strikes -- but he shut down any hint of a rally from the White Sox. The right-hander's 0.68 ERA through 13.1 innings stands in stark contrast to his mediocre 7:5 K:BB, and it could be the former that suffers in his next start Thursday in Cleveland.
Apr 1 2018Fulmer (0-1) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates despite allowing just a single run over eight innings. He gave up four hits and two walks, while striking out three.Fulmer carried over his spring training success (2.12 ERA in 17 innings), but Detroit was held hitless through 6.1 innings and ended up losing 1-0. This could be a sign of things to come for Fulmer, as he often posts strong starts with modest strikeout totals, and the Tigers could struggle to score runs with Ian Kinsler and J.D. Martinez no longer around. Still, this was a good start to the season for the right-hander after undergoing elbow surgery in September, and he'll look to keep things rolling Saturday against the White Sox on the road.
Mar 31 2018The Tigers' game against the Pirates on Saturday was postponed due to weather and will be made up during a doubleheader Sunday, pushing Fulmer's regular-season debut back a day, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Fulmer will likely take the hill for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader with Francisco Liriano on the mound for the second contest. During the 2017 season, Fulmer posted a 3.83 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with a 114:40 K:BB over 164.2 innings.
Mar 28 2018Fulmer is slated to start the Tigers' second game of the season on Saturday against the Pirates at home.It was widely assumed that Fulmer would get the nod on Opening Day, but manager Ron Gardenhire turned to veteran Jordan Zimmermann instead. Regardless, Fulmer is clearly the most talented starter on Detroit's staff, and after posting a 2.12 ERA this spring, he looks ready to be a strong fantasy contributor this season.
Mar 25 2018Fulmer picked up the win in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Braves by tossing seven scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out three. The strong performance brought Fulmer's spring training ERA down to 2.12 across 17 innings. The 25-year-old took a slight step back in 2017 compared to his 2016 Rookie of the Year campaign, as his ERA climbed from 3.03 to 3.83 and his K/9 dropped from 7.5 to 6.2. Fulmer underwent surgery on his throwing elbow in September, and if he's now fully healthy, a return to his 2016-level production could be in store if the early returns are any indication.
Mar 19 2018Fulmer is working on a slower slider with more break this spring, mlive.com reports.Fulmer threw his slider 21.3 percent of the time last season, and it graded out fairly well. This year's version is in the mid-80s rather than hovering around 90, though it has more break. Both velocity and break are important for an offspeed pitch, so it's not clear yet whether the arsenal change will have the desired effect for Fulmer. His ERA was a solid 3.83 last year, though his xFIP was a mediocre 4.24 and his strikeout rate dropped to 16.9 percent. It's possible the re-worked slider could help him get back some strikeouts, which would help his real-world and fantasy value.
Mar 19 2018Fulmer took the loss in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles, but went five innings and allowed just two runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one. This was Fulmer's first appearance in 10 days and just his third this spring after dealing with elbow soreness, so it was good to see him look sharp. He ramped up to 83 pitches in this one and looks on track to be ready to go for the start of the regular season, though he won't start Opening Day, as Jordan Zimmermann will get that honor.
Mar 18 2018Jordan Zimmermann, not Fulmer, will start Opening Day, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. It was widely assumed that Fulmer would get the nod, but manager Ron Gardenhire decided to go with the veteran Zimmermann, who turned in a career-worst 6.08 ERA last season. Fulmer is Detroit's most talented starter, but he has dealt with some elbow issues this spring, so perhaps the Tigers are just giving him a little extra time to get ready for the season.
Mar 9 2018Fulmer (elbow) allowed just one earned run and struck out five during three innings against the Mets on Friday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Fulmer had experienced some right elbow soreness last weekend, but took the mound after a 10-day hiatus and looked like his normal self. The right-hander was able to toss a successful bullpen session Tuesday and received clean results from a precautionary MRI, so there shouldn't be any concern over his status moving forward.
Mar 6 2018Fulmer (elbow) threw around 40 pitches in the bullpen Tuesday and did not experience any issues, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.Fulmer was scratched from his start Sunday with soreness in his throwing elbow, with that outing getting bumped to Friday. After getting through the bullpen session without any setbacks, Fulmer seems on track to make his Friday start and potentially line up as the Opening Day starter.
Mar 5 2018Fulmer (elbow) is scheduled to start Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Fulmer had his previous start postponed after experiencing some soreness in his elbow, but an MRI revealed no structural damage and the soon-to-be 25-year-old is set to return to the mound after taking some additional time to rest and recover. This will certainly be a situation to monitor throughout the rest of camp, but barring any setbacks, it appears Fulmer should have plenty of time to get up to speed before the start of the season.
Mar 3 2018An MRI on Fulmer's elbow showed no structural damage, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Soreness in the back of Fulmer's elbow prompted the Tigers to postpone his upcoming Grapefruit League appearance and send the soon-to-be 25-year-old for a precautionary MRI. Fortunately, everything came back clean, confirming he avoided a more serious injury. The Tigers will still likely proceed cautiously with Fulmer given how early it is in camp, so continue to consider him day-to-day until Detroit provides more information regarding his status.
Mar 3 2018Fulmer has been scratched from Sunday's scheduled start due to soreness in the back of his elbow, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.According to Beck, Fulmer is simply being pushed back a couple days, and the issue is unrelated to the ulnar transposition surgery he underwent last summer. That said, this is obviously a situation worth monitoring, as part of the main appeal with Fulmer is quantity of innings. He doesn't strike hitters out at a high clip and likely won't log many wins on this rebuilding club. Fulmer was sharp in his spring debut earlier this week, striking out two batters in two innings. He should be considered day-to-day for now.
Feb 26 2018Fulmer (elbow) allowed one run on one hit while striking out two batters in two innings of work Monday against the Orioles.Fulmer, who underwent ulnar transposition surgery in September of 2017, looked solid in his Grapefruit League debut. A Trey Mancini homer was the only blemish on his outing, as he retired all six of the other batters he faced. Fulmer is expected to remain on a normal throwing schedule for the rest of spring. With Justin Verlander no longer in town, the 24-year-old righty appears to be the leading candidate to toe the rubber for the Tigers on Opening Day.
Feb 22 2018Fulmer (elbow) is scheduled to start Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. As expected, Fulmer has made a full recovery from September ulnar transposition surgery, a procedure that resulted in the right-hander missing the final month of the past season. His rehab from the procedure only carried a 3-to-4-month recovery window, so he should remain on a normal throwing schedule throughout spring as he prepares for his third big-league season. With Justin Verlander now in Houston, Fulmer looks like the leading candidate to become only the third Opening Day starter for the Tigers in the past 11 years.
Feb 1 2018Tigers general manager Al Avila said Jan. 24 that Fulmer (elbow) should be at full strength for the start of spring training, the Associated Press reports. "He's thrown out to 180 feet with no restrictions and no setbacks, so right now he's on track to be 100 percent coming into spring training," Avila said.Following his Rookie of the Year-winning campaign in 2016, Fulmer took a step back in his sophomore season, delivering a 10-12 record and 3.83 ERA across 164.2 innings before being shuttered in September after undergoing ulnar transposition surgery. Pitching through the injury undoubtedly factored into Fulmer's disappointing numbers to some degree, though the meager 7.5 K/9 rate he submitted as a rookie perhaps hinted that a downturn in his 3.06 ERA was inevitable. With Fulmer at full health entering the upcoming campaign, it should be easier to elucidate whether he's truly an ace-level arm or more of a mid-rotation-caliber pitcher at this stage of his career.
Feb 1 2018Fulmer (elbow) threw a bullpen session Thursday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Fulmer continues to ramp up his activity as he looks to get back to 100 percent after undergoing ulnar transposition surgery back in September. Barring any setbacks, the 24-year-old is expected to be ready for the start of spring training; a healthy Fulmer will look to return to his 2016 form that helped him win American League Rookie of the Year honors (3.06 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 159 innings).
Dec 12 2017Fulmer (elbow) started a throwing program Tuesday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Fulmer underwent ulnar transposition surgery back in September, a procedure that usually carries a 3-to-4 month recovery timeline. He appears to be right on schedule, and barring any setbacks, the right-hander should be fully healthy heading into spring training. Despite dealing with elbow issues, he still posted a respectable 3.83 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 114:40 K:BB across 25 starts (164.2 innings).
Sep 12 2017Fulmer underwent successful ulnar transposition surgery Tuesday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Fulmer will now begin a recovery process that is supposed to take between three and four months as he works to get back to full health for next season. Barring any setbacks, he's expected to be ready to go for spring training. The 24-year-old ended his sophomore season with a 10-12 record to go along with a 3.83 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 114:40 K:BB through 164.2 innings (25 starts) this season.
Sep 11 2017Fulmer (elbow) will undergo ulnar transposition surgery Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. It had appeared doubtful that Fulmer was going to return this season, and the news that he'll undergo surgery on his elbow only confirms those fears. The procedure typically carries a rehab period between three and four months, so barring any setbacks Fulmer should be back in full health for spring training. The 24-year-old's second season will end with a 10-12 record to go with a 3.83 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. With Fulmer out, Chad Bell will likely finish the season in the Tigers' rotation.
Sep 4 2017Fulmer (elbow) isn't expected to visit Dr. James Andrews for an examination until Sept. 11, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Fulmer was never expected to reenter the rotation this week after being diagnosed with right elbow ulnar neuritis following his Aug. 29 start, but the fact that the Tigers aren't rushing the doctor's appointment seemingly makes it increasingly likely that the reigning American League Rookie of the Year may not be in line to return this season. Until Andrews has a chance to assess Fulmer's elbow, it won't be known if the youngster will be able to treat the injury through simple rest and rehab, or if surgical intervention will be necessary. The Tigers filled Fulmer's spot in the rotation Sunday against the Indians with Chad Bell, but it's uncertain if Bell will pick up another start this week after he was lit up for five runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings.
Sep 1 2017Fulmer has had a recurrence of right elbow ulnar neuritis and will visit Dr. James Andrews next week, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. This is pretty dire news for Fulmer, who has posted an uncharacteristic 6.15 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over his last seven starts. He should be considered out indefinitely, and in single-season leagues, it's reasonable to cut bait. Chad Bell will come up to take Fulmer's spot in the rotation Sunday and Artie Lewicki will be selected to start on Monday.
Aug 30 2017Fulmer (10-12) fell to the Rockies on Tuesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk over 6.1 innings while striking out three. After the Tigers tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Fulmer came back out and was greeted by back-to-back singles before a Carlos Gonzalez sac fly ended his night and stuck him with the loss. Fulmer now has a rough 5.18 ERA and 14:9 K:BB in four starts (24.1 innings) since returning from the DL, making him a risky play Sunday at home against Cleveland.
Aug 24 2017Fulmer allowed five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and three walks over six innings against the Yankees on Thursday. He struck out three and didn't factor into the decision.Fulmer's ulnar neuritis, which forced him onto the DL earlier in the month, appeared to flare up in the fifth inning -- as he was seen shaking his hand after hitting Gary Sanchez with a pitch -- but the 24-year-old was ultimately able to carry on with no issues after a visit from the trainer. He could have escaped the contest with two earned runs in six innings, but manager Brad Ausmus decided to send him out for the seventh inning after a prolonged bottom half of the sixth that included a brawl and four ejections. He ended up walking the only two batters he faced in the seventh inning before being removed, and both baserunners eventually came around to score. Fulmer now owns a 4.50 ERA and 11:8 K:BB in three starts (18 innings) since returning from the disabled list, and things won't get any easier as his next start comes Tuesday against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Aug 19 2017Fulmer (10-11) landed in the loss column Saturday after allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks through seven innings against the Dodgers. He struck out six.Fulmer bounced back from a string of rough outings and fired a gem in his second start back from the DL, but the 24-year-old was unlucky and endured his fifth straight loss as the Tigers were shut out. He breezed through the first six frames without allowing a runner into scoring position before a two-base error by Nick Castellanos in the seventh inning led to the only run - unearned - scored against Fulmer. He now owns a 3.60 ERA through 23 starts this season, a number he'll look to keep lowering when he faces the White Sox on Friday in his next start.
Aug 14 2017Fulmer (elbow) will be activated from the 10-day DL to start Monday against the Rangers, the Detroit Free Press reports. The corresponding move to open up a spot on the 25-man roster for Fulmer took place after Sunday's game, when Bruce Rondon was optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Fulmer missed two weeks with his injury, which was diagnosed in the days following a start on the road against the Yankees on July 31 in which he allowed six earned runs on seven hits over six innings.
Aug 14 2017Fulmer (10-10) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out just two batters through five innings during Monday's loss to Texas.Fulmer was placed on the disabled list with right elbow neuritis Aug. 3, and this was his first start since July 31. After beginning the season with a 3.06 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through his first 18 outings of the season, it was disappointing to see him pitch poorly following his DL stint. He'll need to show more on the mound before regaining the matchup-proof status he warranted earlier this season. Fulmer lines up for a daunting home start against the Dodgers next, too.
Aug 14 2017Fulmer (elbow) was activated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Rangers. As expected, Fulmer missed only slightly more than the minimum amount of time after a bout with right elbow neuritis, with the Tigers ultimately clearing him to rejoin the rotation after he was able to complete a bullpen session over the weekend without incident. Assuming he makes it though Monday's turn no worse for the wear, Fulmer should pick up a second start this week Sunday against the Dodgers. Drew VerHagen will move back to the bullpen after making two starts in Fulmer's stead.
Aug 11 2017Fulmer (elbow) is on pace to return Monday and start the series opener against the Rangers, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. While manager Brad Ausmus has yet to confirm Fulmer's return to the rotation, Fulmer's optimism and lack of setbacks after his latest bullpen session is a good sign that he will avoid a rehab assignment and return quickly from the elbow issues that have kept him out since early August. The 24-year-old has an ERA of 3.59 this season with a clean 100 strikeouts, but showed control issues in his most recent start, walking three and hitting one over six innings of work against the Yankees.
Aug 11 2017Fulmer (elbow) was able to throw a rain-shortened bullpen session prior to Friday's game against the Twins, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports.Depending on the results of Friday's bullpen, Fulmer could be in line to return to the rotation for next week's series against the Rangers. The right-hander landed on the DL with right elbow neuritis just over a week ago after getting rocked by the Yankees during the last couple innings of his latest start. Manager Brad Ausmus will likely address Fulmer's position within the next couple days with information regarding his next projected start.
Aug 9 2017Fulmer (elbow) said he felt good after throwing out to 80 feet Wednesday, Ryan Zuke of MLive.com reports. This is encouraging news, as Fulmer reported no pain after throwing for the first time since landing on the disabled list at the end of July. While he hasn't seen a doctor yet, manager Brad Ausmus is pleased with his status, saying he believes Fulmer will be ready to rejoin the rotation sometime early next week barring any setbacks. An exact return date should become clearer as the 24-year-old continues to ramp up his throwing.
Aug 8 2017Fulmer (elbow) is scheduled to resume throwing after meeting with a doctor Wednesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Fulmer will play light catch for the first time since landing on the disabled list, and if all goes well, he'll likely progress to a bullpen session. The 24-year-old doesn't seem too worried about the issue, as he said the inflammation in his elbow has been gone for four or five days, but the Tigers will still play it safe by having him checked out by a doctor. If everything checks out, Fulmer could indeed be back after a very brief stay on the DL.
Aug 3 2017Fulmer was placed on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow neuritis, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Fulmer was tagged for six runs in his most recent start, and it's possible this elbow ailment had something to do with his poor outing. It's unclear how long the injury will keep him sidelined at this point, but the 24-year-old will be forced to miss at least one turn in the rotation while on the shelf. The good news is that manager Brad Ausmus said he wasn't dealing with any ligament damage, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports, so it's possible that his stay on the DL won't be an extended one. His replacement in the rotation hasn't been named yet.
Jul 31 2017Fulmer (10-9) allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and three walks across six innings in Monday's loss to the Yankees. He struck out five.Fulmer, who pitched well through the early stages, allowed four runs on two hits and two walks after an error in the fourth inning. Aaron Judge followed with a home run in the fifth and the Yankees chased the right-hander from the game with a two-run rally to begin the seventh. He got behind with regularity thanks to just 14 first-pitch strikes to 30 batters and became predictable with his pitch selection. Fulmer has struggled to the tune of 14 earned runs over his last 16.2 innings and will look to get back on track Saturday against the Orioles.
Jul 26 2017Fulmer (10-8) gave up three runs on eight hits over eight innings while striking out six in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Royals. He threw 72 of 108 pitches for strikes, but the Tigers offense wasn't able to give Fulmer any run support. The 24-year-old has now delivered seven quality starts in his last eight outings, but his 3.35 ERA and 1.10 WHIP on the year could be in jeopardy in his next start Monday on the road against the Yankees.
Jul 20 2017Fulmer (10-7) allowed eight runs -- five earned -- on seven hits and a walk while striking out two batters through just 2.2 innings during Thursday's loss to Kansas City. This was a rough start for Fulmer, and he was definitely a little unlucky. He allowed three runs or fewer in each of his past six outings, and even after Thursday's poor showing, Fulmer still sports a rock-solid 3.35 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 3.33 FIP. Fantasy owners would love to see improvement to his 6.3 K/9, but considering the landscape of the fantasy pitching ranks, it's tough to complain about Fulmer's season. He projects to face the Royals again in his next start, but this time the game will be at Comerica Park.
Jul 15 2017Fulmer (10-6) allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three across eight innings to earn the victory on Saturday against the Blue Jays.Fulmer was in complete control in this contest while receiving 11 runs of support from the offense as he easily cruised to his 10th victory of the season. He's won four straight decisions, and with an ERA of 3.06 to go along with a 1.07 WHIP, he's provided fantasy managers with a legitimate ace to lead their pitching staffs. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Royals.
Jul 9 2017Fulmer gave up two earned runs on seven hits across six innings in a 5-3 win over the Indians on Sunday.Despite earning his third win in a row (after dropping the previous three), Fulmer only recorded a single strikeout. The 24-year-old heads into the All-Star break boasting a 9-6 record to go with a solid 3.19 ERA and 1.19 WHIP through 17 starts. Also, even though he hasn't been missing a ton of bats lately, Fulmer has only surrendered seven home runs and an opposing batting average of .238, which suggests he should see continued success in the second half of the season.
Jul 4 2017Fulmer (8-6) went eight innings against the Giants on Tuesday, striking out five while allowing three runs on five hits in a 5-3 win.His successful sophomore campaign continues, although Fulmer has experienced a noticeable decline in strikeout rate -- he's at 6.8 K/9 after last year's 7.5 mark. That doesn't appear to have hurt him much, as Fulmer's grounder-heavy repertoire is working out well, but he did give up a pair of homers in this one; he'd only allowed four in his first 15 starts. Even if BABIP and HR/FB regression comes his way, though, he'll still be a reliable fantasy asset. The new-minted All-Star is on schedule to make one more start -- Sunday at Cleveland -- before participating in the midseason classic's festivities.
Jun 29 2017Fulmer (7-6) was charged with three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 8.2 innings in Thursday's win over the Royals. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.Fulmer was outstanding Thursday, facing just one batter above the minimum through eight. It looked like his third career complete game was in the bag, but the Royals began chipping away at the lead with two outs in the ninth and Fulmer was pulled following his 104th pitch of the outing. He now has a 2.42 ERA over his last three starts, and it's especially encouraging to see Fulmer go without a free pass after back-to-back four-walk showings.
Jun 23 2017Fulmer (6-6) allowed just one run on two hits and four walks while striking out eight over seven innings but still took the loss Friday against the Padres. This marks two straight consecutive starts for Fulmer, a good bounce back after he allowed five runs in consecutive starts May 27 and June 2, both against the White Sox. Eight strikeouts marks Fulmer's best since he struck out nine over eight innings on May 5 against the Athletics. Even though it was a loss, Fulmer showed electric stuff, a good sign that he's back on the rise.
Jun 17 2017Fulmer (6-5) allowed three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings during Saturday's loss to the Rays. He struck out three batters and walked four. After allowing 10 runs over his previous two starts (11.2 innings), Fulmer bounced back to toss a quality start despite getting tagged with his fifth loss of the season. The 24-year-old wasn't at his sharpest, however, as he walked more batters than he struck out for just the first time this season. Still, Fulmer sports a respectable 3.45 ERA through 13 starts (86 innings) this season. His next turn in the rotation is scheduled for Thursday against the Mariners.
Jun 13 2017Fulmer will make his next start Saturday against the Rays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press also reports that there is no major injury to the right-hander (just shoulder bursitis, which is minor shoulder inflammation in its simplest form) and that this is just an opportunity for more rest following Fulmer's rough outing in his last start. This would presumably slide Justin Verlander and Daniel Norris up one day each, although no official word has come forth on that front. Fulmer will now line up to face Tampa Bay ace Chris Archer.
Jun 13 2017Fulmer will not start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks as anticipated, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.Last season's Rookie of the Year was seen throwing in the outfield prior to Tuesday's contest, so it's unclear if an injury is in play or not. It's also unclear if Fulmer's start is getting skipped or if he's just getting an extra day to rest after he was roughed up for five runs in 4.1 innings in his previous start. Jordan Zimmermann will move up to make Tuesday's start in his place.
Jun 8 2017Fulmer (6-4) lasted just 4.1 innings in a loss to the Angels Thursday. He allowed nine hits and five runs (all earned), while striking out only one batter.Fulmer started the season with 10 straight quality starts, but he's now failed to record a quality start in his last two outings, giving up 10 earned runs in 11.1 innings during that span. Still, the young right-hander has generally looked very good since his debut last season, so fantasy owners should consider this rough patch a blip on the radar. Fulmer is slated to take the hill again on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks at home.
May 27 2017Fulmer (5-4) allowed three runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four to take the loss Saturday against the White Sox.Fulmer pitched an eight-inning complete game, but with no offensive support, he suffered his fourth loss of the season. With a 2.65 ERA, he's proven that his solid 2016 performance wasn't a mirage, and he's an elite fantasy option. He'll make his next start Friday against the White Sox.
May 23 2017Fulmer (5-2) allowed just one run on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over seven innings, but he was handed a tough-luck loss Monday in 1-0 defeat in Houston.Houston's first-inning run was all it needed to capture the victory and hand Fulmer his first loss since April 18. Through his first seven starts, opposing hitters managed a paltry .196 BAA with a 23 percent strikeout rate over 46 innings. However, Fulmer's been a bit off over his last two games, owning a .305 BAA with a 13 percent strikeout rate. Last season's AL Rookie of the Year still maintains phenomenal numbers, ranking in the AL's top-10 for wins, innings (60), ERA (2.55) and WHIP (1.08). Fulmer will toe the rubber next on Saturday versus the White Sox.
May 17 2017Fulmer (5-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits over seven innings against Baltimore on Wednesday, but that was good enough for a win. He whiffed four.Fulmer's gone at least six innings in each of his starts this year, and he's yet to allow more than three earned runs in an outing. Last year's debut was impressive, but he's been even better this season, again outpitching his peripherals to the tune of a 2.72 ERA. The hard-throwing 24-year-old has rapidly developed into one of the more valuable fantasy starters around.
May 12 2017Fulmer (4-1) picked up the win Thursday against the Angels. He pitched seven innings and allowed just a single run on three hits and two walks. He struck out seven.Fulmer flew through the Angels' lineup, and he now has a 2.54 ERA on the season. Concerns that the young right-hander would regress some in his second MLB season haven't come to fruition at all, as Fulmer is actually improving upon the numbers he posted last season as the AL Rookie of the Year. Fulmer lines up to face a dangerous Orioles team at home Wednesday in his next start, but he's pitching well enough to remain in fantasy lineups regardless of the opponent.
May 11 2017Fulmer will start Thursday for the Tigers at the Angels, Vito Chirco of the Detroit Free Press reports. The right-hander has done his best to top his strong rookie season, posting a 2.77 ERA with an 8.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 over his first 39 innings of 2017. Fulmer also comes off his best start of the year Friday, allowing one run on eight hits and two walks in eight frames, with nine strikeouts.
