Jun 25 2024The Rays designated Devenski for assignment Tuesday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move comes after Devenski was scored upon Monday versus the Mariners for the third time in as many appearances. Devenski holds a 6.75 ERA in 19 relief outings in 2024 and will likely pass through waivers unclaimed.
Jun 12 2024Devenski (2-1) didn't allow a baserunner and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win Tuesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski entered the game with the Rays down 2-1 and retired the side on 14 pitches. He then managed to earn the win after Brandon Lowe delivered a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom half of the frame. Devenski has pitched very well since returning from the injured list May 25, maintaining a 2.25 ERA with a 0.88 WHIP and an 8:4 K:BB across eight innings.
May 25 2024The Rays reinstated Devenski (knee) from the 15-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski landed on the IL on April 29 due to right knee tendinitis. He made three rehab appearances with Triple-A Durham, and in his last outing he gave up one run on two hits while striking out three over three innings. Devenski will be available for the Rays' weekend series against the Royals, and the 33-year-old right-hander is expected to be used as a long reliever in his return.
May 23 2024Devenski (knee) threw three innings and allowed one earned run on two hits while striking out three during a rehab appearance with Triple-A Durham on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski is set to work in long relief upon his activation from the injured list, so he needed some additional time to work up his pitch count on his rehab assignment. According to MLB.com, the Rays were likely satisfied with what they saw in his outing Wednesday, meaning Devenski should be activated for the team's weekend series against the Royals.
May 22 2024Devenski (knee) is scheduled to throw three innings with Triple-A Durham in a rehab appearance Wednesday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays are planning to use Devenski as a long reliever after his activation from the injured list. He threw two frames in his most recent appearance and will now build up his length a bit more. It's unclear whether Wednesday's rehab outing will be his last, but Devenski is expected to return to the active roster by the end of May.
May 20 2024Devenski (knee) threw two innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out five in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Durham on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sunday's outing marked Devenski's second rehab appearance in three days. Per MLB.com, the Rays plan to bring him back as a long reliever, so it's possible that he makes some additional appearances with Durham to continue to build up his workload. Devenski is expected to return before the close of May.
May 17 2024Devenski (knee) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will take the next step in his recovery from right knee tendinitis, an injury that's kept him sidelined since April 24. It's unclear how long of a rehab assignment he'll need, but he's on track to return before the end of May.
May 15 2024Devenski (knee) is expected to face hitters in live batting practice in the near future, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski has been throwing regular bullpen sessions and recovered well from each. He was placed on the injured list in late April and will likely be back before the close of May.
May 8 2024Manager Kevin Cash said Friday that Devenski (knee) has resumed playing catch since being placed on the 15-day injured list April 29, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cash noted that Devenski could soon be ready to throw off a mound "if the knee calms down." Devenski was deactivated last week due to right knee tendinitis, but the Rays are optimistic that the reliever won't miss extensive time.
Apr 29 2024The Rays placed Devenski on the 15-day injured list Monday with right knee tendinitis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski's placement on the IL is retroactive to Friday, so he'll be eligible to return as soon as May 11. The Rays called up Jacob Lopez from Triple-A Durham to fill Devenski's spot on the 26-man active roster and in the bullpen.
Mar 13 2024Devenski is an option to step in as the Rays' No. 5 starter with Taj Bradley (pectoral) ruled out for the start of the season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski has not started a big-league game since the 2019 season, but September was a renaissance of sorts as he posted a 2.08 ERA and 9:2 K:BB in nine appearances with the Rays down the stretch. Tampa Bay liked what it saw enough to bring the veteran back for 2024, and he has been building up to handle multiple innings this spring. Devenski threw two innings against the Blue Jays on Monday, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one batter.
Feb 14 2024The Rays plan to build Devenski up to three innings by mid-March, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski ended the 2023 season with the Rays and re-signed with the club in free agency. He hasn't made a start in the majors since 2019 and that was only a two-inning appearance. Given that, he's unlikely to be a traditional starter in 2024, but he is lining up for a potential multi-frame relief role.
Dec 5 2023Tampa Bay re-signed Devenski to a one-year, $1.1 million contract Tuesday with a $2 million club option for 2025, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski posted an overall 4.46 ERA in 42.1 innings between the Angels and Rays in 2023, but he racked up 42 strikeouts while issuing only 11 walks. The 33-year-old right-hander owns a career 3.78 ERA in 373.1 total big-league frames and returns to Tampa Bay as a likely middle or multi-inning reliever.
Sep 23 2023The Rays recalled Devenski from Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will come up from the minors to take the roster spot of Jason Adam (oblique), who was placed on the 15-day IL on Saturday. Devenski has given up two earned runs across 4.1 innings in the majors since joining the Rays in late August.
Sep 18 2023Devenski was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Monday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski holds a 4.15 ERA in six relief appearances since joining the Rays earlier this month. He's being moved off the 28-man active roster in favor of Jalen Beeks, who was called up from Durham to give the Rays another left-handed option out of the bullpen.
Sep 2 2023The Rays reinstated Devenski from the bereavement list Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski was placed on the bereavement list after signing with the Rays on Tuesday, and he'll now report to the team to serve as bullpen depth. Jalen Beeks was optioned to Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.
Aug 29 2023Devenski signed a major-league contract with the Rays on Tuesday, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Upon returning from the Angels' 15-day injured list Friday, Devenski was designated for assignment, but he didn't take long to catch on elsewhere after clearing waivers. The 32-year-old righty had put up a 5.08 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP across 33.2 innings with the Halos this season. Devenski will go on the bereavement list and is likely to join the Rays for their upcoming series against Cleveland, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Aug 25 2023Devenski (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday and designated for assignment, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski is recovered from the right hamstring strain that sent him to the IL in mid-July, but the Angels don't have a spot for him in their bullpen and needed to clear out 40-man roster space for the return of backup catcher Chad Wallach.
Aug 1 2023Devenski (hamstring) began a rehab assignment Monday in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, striking out three and allowing one hit over a scoreless inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski landed on the 15-day injured list July 17 with a right hamstring strain but shouldn't require too much ramp-up time before making his return to the Angels bullpen. Prior to landing on the IL, Devenski had scooped up three wins and 10 holds while pitching to a 5.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB across 33.2 innings.
Jul 17 2023Devenski was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with a strained right hamstring, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski has struggled lately, particularly in his last appearance when he gave up five runs while recording just two outs. Jimmy Herget will slide into his spot in the Angels' bullpen.
Jul 16 2023Devenski will be placed on the injured list due to a hamstring injury Monday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski hasn't performed particularly well in July, as he allowed nine runs in 4.2 innings over his last five appearances. It's possible his injury factored into some of his struggles, and he'll have some time to recover over the next few weeks. It's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to spend more than the minimum amount of time on the IL.
Jun 24 2023Devenski was tagged with a blown save against Colorado on Friday. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and struck out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski entered with one out and a pair of runners on base in the eighth inning. An error by Andrew Velazquez allowed the Rockies to load the bases, and Devenski then served up a grand slam to Elias Diaz to flip the score in Colorado's favor. The righty reliever has been dominant for much of the season -- through June 15, he notched a 1.85 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and nine holds over 19 contests. However, he's been scored upon in each of his past three games, allowing six runs (five earned) over 2.2 frames and picking up two losses along with two blown saves.
Jun 5 2023Devenski (3-0) threw 1.2 shutout innings to get the win over the Astros on Sunday, allowing just one hit and striking out two in the process. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski began by allowing a leadoff double to Yanier Diaz in the seventh, but went on to retire the next five batters he faced and ended his outing with a strikeout of Yordan Alvarez. The 32-year-old has six straight scoreless outings dating back to May 21. Over that span, Devenski has picked up two holds and two wins and has an 8:0 K:BB in seven innings.
Apr 29 2023Devenski had his contract selected by the Angels on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will join the Angels' bullpen ahead of Saturday's game against the Brewers as a replacement for Jose Quijada, who landed on the injured list Friday with left elbow inflammation. Devenski figures to operate in a middle-relief role.
Apr 28 2023Devenski will be called up by the Angels from Triple-A Salt Lake prior to Saturday's game against the Brewers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will take the place of Jose Quijada with Quijada heading to the injured list. In seven appearances in the Pacific Coast League, Devenski has registered a 4.00 ERA with Salt Lake with a 9:3 K:BB ratio. He'll likely operate in the middle innings while with the team.
Nov 28 2022Devenski signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Monday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will receive another chance to get back on track after struggling to see consistent big-league action during his last three seasons. He's allowed 27 earned runs to go along with a 22:6 K:BB across 25.2 frames over his last three years in the big leagues, spending time in Houston, Arizona and Philadelphia. Per Jon Morosi of MLB Network, Devenski is set to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster during spring training.
Oct 5 2022Devenski was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will return to Triple-A after being called up Sept. 25. While in the big leagues, the reliever appeared in three games, surrendering five runs on seven hits while striking out three over four innings. Michael Plassmeyer was recalled from Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.
Sep 25 2022Devenski had his contract selected by the Phillies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski signed with Philadelphia on a minor-league deal in late August, and he'll joined the big club Sunday after he allowed one run with an 11:3 K:BB over 8.2 innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Brad Hand (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.
Aug 30 2022Devenski signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Tuesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski parted ways with the Diamondbacks on Sunday, and it did not take him long to find work with a new club. Devenski had a rough go of it with Arizona the last couple years, but the Phillies will try to help him get back on track.
Aug 29 2022The Diamondbacks released Devenski on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski is now free to seek employment elsewhere after the Diamondbacks cast him off the 40-man roster Thursday before cutting him loose once he cleared waivers. After receiving a call-up from Triple-A Reno on July 26, the veteran reliever produced a 7.59 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 10.2 innings, so he may not have an active market for his services.
Aug 26 2022Devenski was designated for assignment by Arizona on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski was called up in late July but didn't do much in his 10 appearances, posting a 7.59 ERA in 10.2 innings. He's thrown just 21.2 innings at the major-league level since the start of the 2020 season, struggling to a 9.14 ERA over that stretch. That likely means the 31-year-old will pass through waivers unclaimed.
Jul 30 2022Devenski struck out one over a scoreless seventh inning in Friday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta. He also hit a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski made his first MLB appearance since undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery in June of 2021. He has experience in high-leverage spots, but it's expected the Diamondbacks will acclimate Devenski in low-pressure situations at first. He entered Friday's game with Arizona down by three runs.
Jul 26 2022Devenski had his contract selected by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski missed the first couple months of the year while finishing his rehab from Tommy John surgery, and he'll join the Diamondbacks after making six appearances with Triple-A Reno. The right-hander allowed six earned runs with a 9:2 K:BB over 7.1 innings for Reno.
Apr 7 2022Devenski (elbow) was reassigned to minor-league camp Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski resumed mound work in late March but isn't expected to return to game action until sometime around the middle of the season. He'll continue his recovery process with the minor-league club.
Jun 5 2021Devenski underwent Tommy John surgery Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski had been sidelined since mid-May due to a sprained UCL, and he'll miss the remainder of the year following his Tommy John surgery. Given the lengthy recovery timetable, the right-hander will also likely miss the start of the 2022 campaign.
May 26 2021Devenski (elbow) has opted to undergo elbow surgery, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo could not divulge the nature of the procedure until a surgeon is able to see the extent of the ligament damage. It sounds like a number of possible outcomes including Tommy John surgery.
May 15 2021Devenski was placed on the 60-day injured list Saturday with a sprained UCL in his right elbow. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old last pitched Thursday against the Marlins and surrendered two runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning. Devenski will now be sidelined for at least the next two months while on the 60-day IL, though given it's a UCL injury a longer absence wouldn't be surprising.
May 14 2021Devenski allowed two runs on four hits over two-thirds of an inning in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski entered a high-leverage situation and ceded four consecutive hits. It was the fifth time in eight outings the reliever has allowed inherited runners, or his own runners, to score. At one point, Devenski was in the mix for the unsettled closer job in Arizona, but that no longer appears to be the case. The right-hander has an 8.59 ERA and 1.77 WHIP with a 54.5 percent strand rate.
May 2 2021Devenski (1-0) allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out two in an inning of work. He got the win after blowing the save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski blew the lead in the top of the eighth inning and was credited with a blown save. However, he received the win after the Diamondbacks regained the lead in the bottom of the same inning. The 30-year-old has only pitched four innings this season as he was out for personal reasons. He has only made eight appearances since 2019, pitching 7.2 innings.
Apr 29 2021Devenski (personal) was activated from the restricted list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski had been unavailable since April 7 due to personal reasons, but he'll be available to return against the Rockies on Thursday. The right-hander had converted on one of his two save chances to begin the season and gave up two runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one in two innings. Stefan Crichton should be a top option for save chances, but Devenski could also be part of the picture now that he's back with the team.
Apr 7 2021Devenski was placed on the restricted list for personal reasons Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old blew a save by allowing a game-tying, solo homer Tuesday against the Rockies, and he's now been placed on the injured list for personal reasons. It's unclear when Devenski is expected to rejoin the team. Joakim Soria (calf) is on the injured list and Kevin Ginkel is battling an illness, so Yoan Lopez could be the top option for saves in Arizona for the immediate future.
Apr 4 2021Devenski allowed a run on one hit and struck out one to pick up the save in Sunday's 3-1 win over San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Perceived closer Joakim Soria came on to start the eighth inning and exited early with a calf injury. So what was a murky closer situation prior to Sunday became less clear following the game. It would appear a group of Devenski, Kevin Ginkel, who closed out the eighth inning, and Stefan Crichton could get work in the final third of games.
Mar 29 2021The Diamondbacks informed Devenski on Monday that he would be included on the Opening Day roster, Jody Jackson of FOX Sports Arizona reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The non-roster invitee secured his spot in the Arizona bullpen after he allowed seven baserunners while striking out seven across seven scoreless innings this spring. Devenski isn't believed to be a factor in the Diamondbacks' unsettled closing situation, but he could gain traction in a setup role early on during the season.
Mar 14 2021Devenski (elbow) made his third Cactus League appearance in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Padres, striking out two over a perfect inning in relief. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski required surgery last September to remove a bone spur in his right elbow, but he reported to spring training at full health and looks well on his way to winning a spot in Arizona's bullpen, despite his status as a non-roster invitee. He's now tossed three scoreless frames so far this spring while allowing only three baserunners.
Jan 20 2021Devenski (elbow) agreed to a contract Wednesday with the Diamondbacks, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. According to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic, Devenski will be joining Arizona on a minor-league deal that is worth $1 million at the MLB level and includes up to $350,000 in roster bonuses for games pitched and games finished. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski will be moving on to a new organization after making 225 appearances with the Astros across the past five seasons and posting a 3.35 ERA and 9.7 K/9. Though the 30-year-old was one of the majors' top middle relievers in 2016 and 2017, his skills have steadily declined in the three years that followed, with Devenski supplying a 4.88 ERA (4.51 xFIP) during that span. He was limited to just four appearances in 2020 before undergoing arthroscopic elbow surgery in mid-September, but the right-hander is expected to be ready to go for the start of spring training. The Diamondbacks don't presently have a clear top option for saves on the roster, so a healthy Devenski could factor into the late-inning mix if he's able to show some effectiveness early on in 2021.
Oct 30 2020Devenski (elbow) elected free agency Friday rather than accept an outright assignment to the minors, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski battled arm troubles throughout the season and eventually underwent surgery to removed a bone spur from his right elbow. He threw just 3.2 innings and allowed six runs. After breaking out with a 2.38 ERA in his first two seasons in the league, he now owns a 4.88 ERA in his last three. A pitcher with mediocre recent numbers and recent elbow surgery is unlikely to be too popular on the open market.
Sep 16 2020Devenski underwent season-ending surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros haven't announced a timeline for Devenski's return to full activities, but given that his procedure wasn't a reconstructive one, he should have a good chance at being ready to go for the start of spring training. Due to arm injuries, Devenski was limited to only four appearances out of the Houston bullpen this season.
Sep 7 2020Devenski returned to the injured list Monday, this time with elbow discomfort, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski missed more than a month with arm soreness and returned for just two appearances before heading right back to the injured list. He's allowed six earned runs in 3.2 innings this season.
Sep 4 2020Devenski (arm) was activated from the injured list Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski returns after missing more than a month with arm soreness. He allowed three runs in just two innings of work prior to landing on the injured list. Joe Biagini was optioned in a corresponding move.
Sep 3 2020Devenski (arm) could return during this current road trip that lasts through Sept. 13, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He progressed to throwing off a mound in mid-August and the fact that he is traveling with the team suggests his activation could come soon. If Devenski is back to his old self, he could immediately be a setup option ahead of closer Ryan Pressly.
Aug 12 2020Devenski (arm) has progressed to throwing off a mound, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A sore arm sent Devenski to the injured list at the start of August. He remains without a clear timetable, but given that he hasn't been out too long and that he's already back to throwing off a mound, he may not wind up missing too many more games.
Aug 1 2020Devenski (arm) landed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski has pitched twice this season, allowing three runs in two innings of work. He's yet to be diagnosed with anything other than arm soreness, but it's not yet clear when he's expected to return. Carlos Sanabria was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.
Jul 29 2020Devenski (arm) will travel with the team this weekend but is unavailable to pitch Wednesday, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only public diagnosis is arm soreness for Devenski, and the Astros are operating as though he could avoid a stint on the injured list. For now they have been leaning on some youngsters to get things done in the middle innings.
Jul 27 2020Devenski is battling arm soreness, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He gave up three runs on three hits and one walk in one inning during Sunday's game. Ryan Pressly is also down with elbow soreness, so the Astros will have to lean heavily on their young relievers. Devenski is without a timeline to return to game action.
Jul 26 2020Devenski (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one over one inning as he earned the loss Sunday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski was called on to preserve a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning of Sunday's game, but he was unable to contain the Mariners as he picked up the loss and blown save. The right-hander posted a 4.83 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 69 innings with the Astros last season and isn't expected to pitch in many high-leverage situations this year.
Jul 5 2020Devenski threw two innings in a simulated game Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski could have a similar multi-inning role as he did in 2017, when he was named an All-Star. Starting pitchers are not expected to pitch deep into games at the start of the season, so there may be a need for multi-inning performances from the bullpen. Additionally, the low inventory of games -- 60 instead of 162 -- may prompt managers to manage games as they might during a playoff series. That means giving starters who don't have their best stuff a quick hook in a given game.
Mar 16 2020Devenski is expected to be part of the Astros' bullpen when the regular season starts, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The 29-year-old right-hander has not allowed a run on four hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.1 spring innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros hope to see the Devenski of 2017, a season in which he struck out 11.1 batters per nine innings and was named an All-Star. Since then, his K/9 dropped in successive seasons along with an increase in HR/9 (1.7). He's slipped behind Ryan Pressly and Joe Smith in terms of high-leverage relief work.
Jan 10 2020Devenski signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Astros on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team declined his $2.63 million club option for 2020 in November, but the 29-year-old will stick around on a lesser deal while avoiding arbitration. Devenski had another up-and-down season in 2019 with a 4.83 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 72:21 K:BB over 69 innings.
Nov 4 2019Devenski's option was declined by the Astros on Monday, but he remains on the roster as he's still arbitration-eligible, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Devenski received a somewhat odd contract back in February, which gave the Astros the opportunity of locking him in for 2020 at a predetermined price or going back through the arbitration process. They'll choose the latter following his mediocre 4.83 ERA in 69 innings.
Oct 22 2019Devenski was added to the Astros' World Series roster, Jared Diamond of The Wall Street Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros' lone change from the ALCS sees Devenski join the team in place of Bryan Abreu. Devenski has yet to pitch in the playoffs and posted an unremarkable 4.83 ERA in 69 regular-season innings.
Aug 16 2019Devenski (2-2) was charged with the loss against the A's on Thursday, allowing a solo home run while striking out three.
Aug 14 2019Devenski (2-1) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits over two innings.
Aug 13 2019Devenski is starting Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the White Sox, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.
Jul 13 2018Devenski (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits in a third of an inning, taking the loss Thursday against Oakland.Devenski was also tagged with a blown save, his second in the last five appearances. Last season at this time, Devenski was preparing for his first All-Star Game appearance, however, the break can't come soon enough for the right-hander in 2018. He's been a very effective reliever all season, but is finishing the first half on a down note. Devenski, whose season ERA was a tidy 1.34 through the end of June, has given up five runs, seven hits, two walks and a hit batsman over his last three innings.
Jun 17 2018Devenski struck out two in a clean ninth inning in Saturday's 10-2 win over the Royals. This was Devenski's fourth consecutive appearance without allowing a walk or a hit and sixth without permitting a run. He's lowered his ERA to 1.63 while striking out 34 over 27.2 innings. Houston's bats have heated up during a 10-game winning streak so Devenski hasn't been needed for too much high-leverage work of late, which is why we saw him mopping up Saturday's blowout win.
May 29 2018Devenski allowed two runs on three hits and a walk in the ninth inning of Tuesday's extra innings loss to the Yankees.Devenski got the nod for the save opportunity Tuesday after Ken Giles had pitched on both Sunday and Monday. Staked to a two-run lead, the hard-throwing reliever issued a leadoff walk to Miguel Andujar before serving up a game-tying homer to Brett Gardner. It was Devenski's first blown save of the season and the Yankees went on to win in extras.

Apr 18 2018Devenski closed out Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Mariners, working around a hit and a walk to record his second save of the season.Manager A.J. Hinch has been somewhat unpredictable in his deployment of relievers late in games, but this was the clearest sign yet that he doesn't view Ken Giles as the team's de facto closer. Giles was well rested, having last pitched three days ago, but was not used to button up Tuesday's win. Three Houston relievers have saves with Devenski the team leader.
Apr 13 2018Devenski allowed one hit while striking out the side in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to pick up his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Rangers.Ken Giles hasn't pitched since Monday, so it seems as though manager A.J. Hinch is serious about using different relievers to close based on matchups and who is pitching well. Devenski now has a 1.29 ERA and 10:1 K:BB through his first seven innings of 2018 with a win, a save and two holds, so whatever role he gets used in, the right-hander should continue to pile up fantasy value.
Apr 8 2018Devenksi (1-0) struck out two over 1.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Padres in 10 innings.Devenski has allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five over 3.2 innings spanning four appearances. He's still called on at any time of the game -- he's pitched in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and extra innings so far -- but Saturday's outing was the first time this season that he's pitched multiple innings, a stark contrast to how he was used in 2017. Last year after four appearances, Devenski had tossed 11 innings. He was a unique weapon, but that first-half usage made him less effective over the second half. Manager A.J. Hinch will strive to find the right balance in 2018.
Mar 5 2018Manager A.J. Hinch will use Devenski has a multiple-inning reliever in 2018, Hunter Atkins of the Houston Chronicle reports.Devenski is considered an important bullpen piece, but that doesn't mean he'll pitch exclusively in a setup role. He became an All Star in 2017 largely because he was effective as a long reliever who pitched in high-leverage spots, anywhere from the fifth inning to the eighth inning. The trick will be keeping him effective all season. Devenski lost a feel for his slider in 2017 and had his workload reduced during a second-half dip.

He struck out two.Devenski missed the first week of spring games due to an illness, but it seems that nothing is holding him back any longer. Sep 10 2017Devenski (8-4) surrendered two hits and two runs in one innings in Houston's 11-4 loss in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against the Athletics.Oakland Coliseum has been a house of horrors for Houston, particularly its bullpen. The Astros lost Friday's game on a walk-off hit, then were swept in Saturday's twinbill by a total score of 22-5. Over the first three games of the series, Houston's bullpen has allowed 23 earned runs over 10.1 innings (20.03 ERA). That ineptitude spread to Devenski, arguably Houston's most indispensible reliever.
Sep 3 2017Devenski pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to record his fourth save of the season during Sunday's win over the Mets.Devenski pitched three scoreless frames Saturday to earn his seventh win, so it's been a huge weekend for the standout reliever. With a 2.50 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 11.3 K/9 for the campaign, the 26-year-old righty has been a strong fantasy asset this season. While regular save opportunities aren't in he equation, his top-tier ratios and high-leverage role still carry plenty of value.
Aug 31 2017Devenski (7-3) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings during Thursday's win over the Rangers. After a little bit of a rough patch, Devenski has now allowed just one earned run through 11.2 innings over his past 13 appearances. With a 2.57 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 11.2 K/9 for the season, he's proven to be a valuable reliever in the majority of fantasy settings.
Aug 6 2017Devenski's recent struggles are traced to failing command of his fastball and slider, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.Devenski has allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits, including four home runs, and four walks over his last 9.2 innings. "He's got to push through some things." manager A.J. Hinch said. "The walks are uncommon for him. And him not being able to locate his fastball, he's trying to do a little too much." Devenski has been an important piece of the Astros' bullpen, pitching in all kinds of high-leverage situations. While his latest stretch has been unpleasant, Devenski maintains a high strikeout rate (11.7 K/9) and will continue to throw when games are on the line.
Jul 29 2017Devenski has allowed a home run in four of his last seven appearances (7.2 innings). The 26-year-old had allowed only four home runs all season prior to this stretch, and has seen his ERA climb from 2.09 to 2.88. Devenski still has a 6-3 record with 15 holds and a fantastic 0.83 WHIP and 11.8 K/9 on the season. The right-hander remains a versatile bullpen option for the Astros and in all fantasy formats.
Jul 6 2017Devenski (6-3) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to earn the victory against the Braves on Wednesday. The six wins is tied for first among AL relievers, to go along with 11 holds for the Astros' right-hander. Jul 3 2017Devenski (5-3) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four in Sunday's 8-1 win over the Yankees. With Houston leading, 5-0, Devenski entered in the fifth inning to earn an easy win after starter Mike Fiers was done in by a rising pitch count. He routinely pitches multiple innings and will often get the call when starters are unable to give the Astros length. Sunday's effort was Devenski's third straight appearance of at least two innings and the 11th time out of 33 appearances this season that he's been called on to get at least six outs.
Jun 30 2017Devenski worked around two hits and a walk while striking out two over two scoreless innings in Thursday's 6-1 win over Oakland.Devenski has logged 17.1 innings during the month of June, helping to shore up a rotation featuring four fill-in starters. Houston's relievers have pitched 43 percent of the innings during the month of June through Thursday's game, compared to 35 percent in April and 37 percent in May. Only once in the last 11 games has a Houston starter completed six innings. As the injured starters begin to work their way back to the lineup, manager A.J. Hinch is looking to give his relievers some respite.
Jun 23 2017Devenski threw a clean ninth inning with three strikeouts to earn his third save of the season Thursday against the A's.It took just 15 pitches for Devenski to take care of Rajai Davis, Chad Pinder, and Jaycob Brugman to earn the save after the A's had put together a rally to make the game uncomfortably close for the Astros. Ken Giles still has a strong hold on the closer's role for the Astros, but Devenski has elite numbers across the board that make him a viable ninth inning option on days where manager A.J. Hinch wants to give his regular closer a rest day. Devenski is sporting a 12.87 K/9 rate and also owns an impressive 0.82 WHIP over 42.2 innings.
May 31 2017Devenski allowed one hit over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Twins.Devesnki, who picked up his sixth hold of the season, protected the lead and helped make a winner of Mike Fiers who managed to stave off a demotion to the bullpen. This was the first time Devenski had pitched since last Friday. A couple of weeks ago, his unorthodox usage pattern had him on pace to top 100 innings, so manager A.J. Hinch made a conscious effort to manage the right-hander's innings. After averaging 2.1 innings per appearance during the month of April, Devenski is down to 1.1 innings per outing during May.
May 23 2017Devenski (3-2) didn't allow a hit or walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings in Monday's 1-0 win over the Tigers. When it was learned manager A.J. Hinch was going to use a bunch of relievers to replace Dallas Keuchel (neck, DL), we knew one of those relievers would be the multi-inning monster Devenski. He came on with one out and a man on in the fourth inning and proceeded to eliminate that threat and then hurl two more scoreless innings. Through 15 appearances, the right-hander has a 2.67 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 46 strikeouts over 27 innings. As a volume reliever who strikes out more than 15 batters per nine innings, there's some fantasy value in Devenski.
