Jun 12 2025 | Diaz earned the save in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Nationals, allowing a walk and a hit in a scoreless inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Ryne Stanek allowed three straight hits to lead off the ninth, the Mets turned to Diaz to protect a 4-1 lead with the tying run at the plate. Diaz was shaky initially, walking Nathaniel Lowe to load the bases before allowing a base hit to Josh Bell that cut the lead to 4-2. The Nats would scratch across one more run on a wild pitch before Diaz induced a pair of groundouts to strand the tying run on third base. The 31-year-old improves to 15-for-16 in save chances this year. He's allowed just one earned run in his last 18.2 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.22 with a 0.95 WHIP and 42:12 K:BB across 28.1 innings this season. |
Jun 6 2025 | Diaz earned the save against the Rockies on Friday, striking out one batter in a perfect ninth. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was brought in for the save opportunity after Francisco Lindor (toe) gave the Mets a two-run lead in the ninth. Diaz needed 13 pitches to get through the first two batters but just two to get Kyle Farmer to line out and secure the win. Diaz has converted 14 of 15 save opportunities this season and has a 2.39 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB across 26.1 innings. |
Jun 2 2025 | Diaz (3-0) blew a save but earned the win over the Dodgers on Monday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two batters over one inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz came into Monday 13-for-13 in save opportunities on the season, but he wasn't able to hold a 2-1 Mets lead in the ninth inning. The right-hander gave up the tying run on a Shohei Ohtani sacrifice fly after two of the first three batters he faced reached base on singles, though Diaz was able to strike out Teoscar Hernandez with the winning run on second base. The closer then earned the victory as a result of the Mets scoring twice in the 10th inning. The run allowed by Diaz was the first earned run charged to him over his past 14 outings, and he still holds an excellent 2.49 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 39:11 K:BB through 25.1 innings this season. |
Jun 1 2025 | Diaz earned the save against the Rockies on Sunday, allowing one hit while striking out three in a scoreless ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: DÃaz gave up a leadoff single before striking out the next three batters to seal the win. The 31-year-old remains perfect in save chances, converting all 13 opportunities while posting a 2.22 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 37:11 K:BB across 24.1 innings. |
May 30 2025 | Diaz earned the save in Friday's 4-2 win over Colorado, striking out all three batters he faced in a perfect ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was brought in to protect the Mets' two-run lead. He made quick work of the Rockies batters, causing all three he faced to strike out swinging. Diaz has converted all 12 of his save opportunities this season and has not yielded an earned run since April 21 against the Phillies. He has a 2.31 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB across 23.1 innings this season. |
May 27 2025 | Diaz (2-0) picked up the win Monday over the White Sox, walking one and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets' closer worked the top of the ninth with the score tied 1-1 and a save chance off the table, and he was rewarded when Francisco Lindor lofted a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame. It was Diaz's 12th straight appearance without allowing an earned run, a stretch in which he's collected a win and five saves with a 16:5 K:BB in 12.2 innings. The month-long hot streak has shaved his ratios on the season down to a 2.42 ERA and 0.99 WHIP, numbers right in line with Diaz's career performance. |
May 24 2025 | Diaz earned a save against the Dodgers on Saturday, striking out three batters in 1.1 perfect innings. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered in the eighth inning with a runner on first base and New York holding a 4-2 lead. He struck out Mookie Betts to end the threat, then fanned both Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman en route to retiring the side in order in the ninth to close out the contest. Diaz extended his stretch of appearances without allowing an earned run to 11, and during that span he's posted a 15:4 K:BB across 11.1 frames while picking up four saves. The veteran right-hander is a perfect 11-for-11 in save opportunities on the campaign, once again cementing himself as one of MLB's best closers. |
May 17 2025 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 10th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Yankees. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander's adrenaline was pumping, and Diaz topped out at 100 mph on a fastball before fanning Aaron Judge with a 98.6 mph heater to end the game. That's a big step up from the career-low 96.6 mph Diaz has been averaging with the pitch this season, and a very encouraging sign as he produced his eighth straight appearance without allowing an earned run. The 31-year-old sports a 3.00 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB through 18 innings, and he's a perfect 10-for-10 in converting save chances. |
May 14 2025 | Diaz walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his ninth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Pirates. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The final frame was more nervous than it appears from a glance at Diaz's line, as a Francisco Lindor error and stolen bases by Adam Frazier and Isiah Kiner-Falefa put runners on second and third with one out. The Mets closer was able to buckle down though, fanning Bryan Reynolds before getting Joey Bart to ground out to second base. Diaz has yet to blow a save this season despite some bumpy appearances and a career-low 96.6 mph average fastball, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB through 17 innings. |
May 5 2025 | Diaz struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Monday's 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Diaz's first save since April 26 versus the Nationals. He battled a hip issue in that time, and his return to the mound Sunday versus the Cardinals saw him allow two hits and strike out one in a scoreless inning in a non-save situation. He should be good to resume closing duties, though after pitching consecutive days, he may not be available if a save situation arises Tuesday. Diaz has a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB with eight saves over 14 innings this season. |
Apr 21 2025 | Diaz allowed a run on one hit in one inning during Monday's win over Philadelphia. He struck out two and earned a save. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Diaz was charged with only one run, he served up a three-run blast to Bryson Stott after inheriting two runners from Max Kranick. It was the first home run allowed by Diaz since April 9 and snapped a three-inning scoreless streak. Despite his 5.59 ERA, he's converted each of his six save chances this season. |
Apr 19 2025 | Diaz earned the save after striking out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning to close out Saturday's 3-0 win over the Cardinals. He did not issue a walk. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz needed 19 pitches (12 strikes) to get through the ninth inning, but he struck out the first two batters he faced before forcing a Yohel Pozo groundout to end the game. Diaz has converted on all five of his save opportunities this season and has struck out six batters without allowing a run over his last three innings of work. |
Apr 17 2025 | Diaz picked up the save after allowing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals. He struck out two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although it was Diaz's third straight outing where he allowed the leadoff batter to reach base, he didn't face much resistance from the Cardinals otherwise. The hard-throwing right-hander still has work to do to improve on his 5.87 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 11:6 K:BB over 7.2 innings, but Diaz has converted each of his first four save opportunities as New York's closer. |
Apr 12 2025 | Diaz recorded his third save of the season in Friday's 7-6 win over the A's, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks in the ninth inning. He struck out one. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Called in to protect a 7-4 lead, Diaz nearly made a hash of it as he led off the ninth by issuing two walks sandwiched around a strikeout of Brent Rooker. A Shea Langeliers double and a JJ Bleday sacrifice fly brought home both free passes, but Diaz got Jacob Wilson to ground out to escape the jam. The veteran closer has yet to blow a save in 2025, but Diaz has been tagged for five runs in his last two appearances, leaving him with a 7.94 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB through 5.2 innings. |
Apr 6 2025 | Diaz picked up the save in Sunday's 2-1 win against the Blue Jays, pitching a clean inning with a strikeout. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander flamethrower collected his 227th career save, smoothly retiring the side on just 10 pitches. The 15.8 percent walk rate Diaz posted in the Grapefruit League looks like an anomaly, as he is yet to issue a free pass across his first four scoreless innings this season while punching out six. |
Mar 29 2025 | Diaz struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning Friday to pick up his first save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Astros. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz looked like his usual self Friday, striking out the first batter he faced and finishing the frame on 15 pitches while touching 98 mph with his fastball. There's no doubt that he's still locked in as the Mets' closer, and he should have plenty more chances to rack up saves over the next 160 contests. |
Mar 20 2025 | Diaz sat 93-95 mph with his fastball during Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros, according to the stadium radar gun, and Statcast has him averaging 95.7 mph with his four-seamer this spring, his lowest mark since 2020, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stadium guns aren't always reliable, and Mets manager Carlos Mendoza says he isn't concerned -- he indicated after Wednesday's outing that the closer had hit 97 mph in a back-field game recently. Still, Diaz's velocity has been on the decline since his 2023 ACL surgery, and he averaged 99 mph the spring prior to that injury. If the 30-year-old right-hander has lost some of his heat, he'll need to compensate with better control -- his 9.3 percent walk rate last season was his highest mark since 2020. Even if he can't regain his elite form or consistent triple-digit fastball, Diaz is still locked in as the Mets' closer. |
Mar 19 2025 | Diaz has posted a 4:3 K:BB through 2.1 innings over three Grapefruit League innings this spring, allowing two runs on three hits. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the small-sample ratios aren't pretty, the fact that four of Diaz's seven outs this spring have come via strikeout should be reassuring to potential fantasy investors. The veteran closer had an erratic 2024 as well -- his seven blown saves tied his career high -- but being one year further removed from the ACL surgery that sidelined him for the entire 2023 campaign should help him regain his elite form. |
Oct 1 2024 | Diaz (6-4) blew the save but picked up the win in the first game of Monday's doubleheader against Atlanta, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk over 1.2 innings. He struck out two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With both teams needing at least one win in the twin bill to lock up a wild-card spot, the matinee featured a wild, desperate finish that saw 12 of the game's 15 runs cross the plate over the final two innings. Diaz came on with one out and two on in the eighth, and after retiring Gio Urshela, the Mets' closer missed his chance to escape the frame unscathed when he was late covering first base on a Jarred Kelenic grounder down the line that Pete Alonso dove to stop well behind the bag. Atlanta wound up taking a 7-6 lead, but when New York tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth, Diaz was able to slam the door shut. It was his first blown save since Aug. 28, and only the second time in 13 September appearances that the right-hander had been scored upon. Diaz heads into the playoffs with a 1.93 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 26:5 K:BB over 14 innings in the final month of the regular season. |
Sep 23 2024 | Diaz struck out four while allowing a hit and two walks over two scoreless innings Sunday to pick up his 20th save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Phillies. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hanging onto a slim lead over Atlanta for the final wild-card spot, manager Carlos Mendoza did not hesitate to put Diaz in for another save opportunity just one day after throwing 17 pitches to get four outs. Diaz left Bryce Harper stranded on third in the eighth and then worked around a pair of walks in the ninth to shut the door on the Phillies. Diaz has given up just one run while owning a 21:3 K:BB in 11.1 innings during September and also reached 20 saves in a season for the sixth time in his career. He owns a 3.35 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 79:18 K:BB in 51 innings on the year. |
Sep 22 2024 | Diaz struck out two in 1.1 perfect innings of relief Saturday to record his 19th save of the season in a 6-3 win over the Phillies. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fanned Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper en route to his fifth straight save conversion. Diaz has been scored upon only once in his last 12 appearances, posting a 0.79 ERA, 0.53 WHIP and 21:1 K:BB through 11.1 innings over that stretch, and he appears to be back in elite form as the Mets try to lock down a playoff spot. |
Sep 15 2024 | Diaz took the loss Sunday against the Phillies, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts across two-thirds of an inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took the mound in the ninth inning tied 1-1, but couldn't push the game into extra innings. Nick Castellanos logged a one-out single and then stole second base on a strike three to Alec Bohm. J.T. Realmuto provided the game-winning hit with a single to center field. The outing snapped a scoreless inning streak of 7.1 frames for Diaz. The 30-year-old closer has 18 saves and a 3.74 ERA across 45.2 innings. |
Sep 11 2024 | Diaz earned the save Wednesday against Toronto, retiring the only batter he faced in the ninth inning to seal a 6-2 victory. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Ryne Stanek allowed a run on back-to-back two-out singles in the ninth, Diaz came in to face Nathan Lukes, who he'd retire on just one pitch to lock down his 18th save. It's the eighth straight scoreless appearance from Diaz -- he's allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out 14 over 7.1 innings in that span. The right-hander's ERA is down to 3.60 on the season with a 1.00 WHIP and 68:16 K:BB across 45 innings. |
Sep 9 2024 | Diaz picked up the save Monday against the Blue Jays allowing one hit and no walks with one strikeout across a scoreless ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz hasn't allowed a run in seven straight innings, tallying three saves and a 14:1 K:BB during that stretch. Diaz is 17-for-23 in save chances this season, logging a 3.63 ERA across 44.2 innings. |
Sep 1 2024 | Diaz earned the save in Sunday's 2-0 win over the White Sox, striking out the side in a perfect ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz picked up his second save in his last three appearances. In those outings, he's racked up seven strikeouts while not allowing a run. Diaz also has at least one strikeout in 18 of his last 19 appearances. For the year, he's compiled 16 saves to compliment a 3.98 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 61:15 K:BB in 40.2 innings. |
Aug 29 2024 | Diaz earned the save in Thursday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a much-needed outing for Diaz, who allowed four runs on a pair of home runs in his last two appearances, both losses. After surrendering a go-ahead grand slam to Corbin Carroll on Wednesday, Diaz made quick work of the Diamondbacks on Thursday, striking out Lourdes Gurriel and Josh Bell before coaxing a game-ending pop-out from Jake McCarthy. Diaz is now 15-for-21 in save chances with a 4.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB across 38.2 innings this season. |
Aug 26 2024 | Diaz (5-2) took the loss Sunday against the Padres, allowing one run on one hit while striking out a batter for the only out he recorded. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz came into the bottom of ninth trying to send the game to extra innings with the score tied 2-2. He struck out Jake Cronenworth to begin things, but Jackson Merrill connected on a slider and took it over the wall to walk it off for the Padres. It was Diaz's first loss since coming back from the injured list in June and the second run he's given up in 6.1 innings in August. He's only picked up one save in seven appearances this month but does have an 11:1 K:BB over that span. For the year, Diaz owns a 3.62 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 54:13 K:BB in 37.1 innings to go along with 14 saves. |
Aug 21 2024 | Diaz (5-1) earned the win Wednesday over the Orioles, striking out a pair in a perfect inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz made quick work of the middle of Baltimore's lineup, striking out Anthony Santander and Ryan Mountcastle in a clean top half of the ninth before the Mets walked it off with a Jesse Winker homer in the bottom half of the frame. Diaz has wins in back-to-back appearances -- he's allowed just two runs in his last 11.2 innings while logging 18 strikeouts in that span. The 30-year-old Diaz has converted 14 of 19 save chances this season while posting a 3.41 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 12.89 K/9 across 37 innings. |
Aug 19 2024 | Diaz (4-1) picked up the win Monday against Baltimore, striking out one during a perfect ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took the mound to start the ninth inning with the game tied 3-3 and fired a perfect frame before the Mets walked it off. The 30-year-old has logged a strikeout in 13 consecutive appearances, allowing two runs on five hits during that stretch. Diaz is 14-for-19 in save opportunities, logging a 3.50 ERA in 36 innings, which stands as his worst ERA since 2019. |
Aug 8 2024 | Diaz picked up the save in a win over the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing one run on one hit over one inning while striking out two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered the contest in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run lead and surrendered a leadoff triple to Michael Toglia on the first pitch he threw before then seeing the runner come home on a Jake Cave groundout two batters later. However, the veteran reliever was able to wrap things up with a swinging strikeout of Charlie Blackmon to end the game and secure his 14th save of the campaign. Diaz has now converted each of his last six save opportunities, posting multiple strikeouts in three of his last four appearances. However, he's also allowed a run in two of his last five outings. |
Jul 31 2024 | Diaz struck out two over 1.1 perfect innings Tuesday to record his 13th save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets closer fanned Byron Buxton and Royce Lewis en route to his fifth straight successful conversion. Diaz has been brilliant since coming off the IL in mid-June, posting a 0.82 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB over 11 innings with two wins and eight saves in 11 appearances. |
Jul 22 2024 | Diaz picked up his 12th save of the season Monday against Miami, allowing one earned run on two hits and one walk in one inning of work. He struck out one. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Marlins gave Diaz and the Mets a big scare in the ninth inning, loading the bases with just one out. An RBI groundout from Josh Bell cut the lead to 6-4, but Diaz induced a pop out to end the game and log his 12th save of the season. The 30-year-old has been excellent since returning from suspension on July 6, allowing just one earned run in 5.2 innings while going 5-for-6 in save opportunities. |
Jul 21 2024 | Diaz struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his 11th save of the season in a 1-0 win over the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He closed out the combined shutout on 12 pitches (nine strikes), with his fastball topping out at 98.5 mph. Diaz appears to be back in nearly peak form -- he hasn't given up a run in eight appearances since coming off the IL in mid-June, piling up six saves and two wins with a 0.78 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB over 7.2 innings during that stretch. |
Jul 13 2024 | Diaz walked two and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his 10th save of the season in a 7-6 win over the Rockies. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It didn't look like Diaz's services would be needed when the Mets built a 7-2 lead through five frames, but a late collapse by the rest of the bullpen forced the right-hander into action. Diaz has maintained a pristine 0.00 ERA since coming off the IL in mid-June, converting five of six save chances with a 0.90 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB through 6.2 innings. |
Jul 10 2024 | Diaz struck out the only batter he faced Tuesday to record his ninth save of the season in a 7-5 win over the Nationals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets took a 7-2 lead into the ninth inning, but Reed Garrett made a mess of things and forced manager Carlos Mendoza to turn to his closer with two outs and a runner on first base. Diaz actually allowed the inherited runner to score after Jacob Young took second on defensive indifference and then raced around the bases on a wild pitch, but the right-hander fanned CJ Abrams to end the game. Diaz has gone six straight appearances since returning from his suspension without having a run charged to his own ledger, collecting two wins and four saves during that stretch with a 6:1 K:BB. |
Jul 7 2024 | Diaz (3-1) got the win during Sunday's 3-2 victory over the Pirates but also blew the save. He did not allow a run on one hit, one walk and one strikeout over 1.1 innings. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Mets leading 1-0, Diaz entered the game with two outs in the eighth and allowed a walk and the go-ahead hit. After Francisco Lindor gave his team the lead, Diaz came back out and pitched a clean ninth to pick up his third win. The 30-year-old returned from his 10-game suspension on Saturday, and he picked up the save. With Sunday's outing, he hasn't allowed a run in his last six appearances and has lowered his ERA to 4.26. |
Jul 6 2024 | The Mets activated Diaz from his 10-game suspension Saturday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was dealt an automatic 10-game suspension June 24 for the use of an illegal substance on the mound, and he'll now reclaim his usual role as New York's closer. The 30-year-old has been met with struggles this season, putting up a 4.70 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 23 innings, but his return will still provide a much-needed boost to the Mets' bullpen, which posted an 8.37 ERA while Diaz was suspended. |
Jun 25 2024 | Diaz will begin serving his 10-game foreign substance suspension Tuesday after declining to appeal the ruling, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While adamant he didn't use anything illegal, Diaz likely stood little chance of winning an appeal, so he'll get the suspension over with now. The closer will be eligible to return July 6. Adam Ottavino, Jake Diekman and Reed Garrett are candidates for save chances while Diaz is unavailable. |
Jun 24 2024 | The league has suspended Diaz for 10 games for violating the foreign-substance policy, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was ejected from Sunday's game against the Cubs after failing the "sticky substance" from the crew chief upon entering the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Diaz has the option to appeal, but if he doesn't, the 30-year-old closer will be out until July 6 against the Pirates. If Diaz opts to not appeal, Adam Ottavino and Reed Garrett will be the likely candidates to step in for save opportunities. |
Jun 23 2024 | Diaz was ejected from Sunday's game against the Cubs for the use of an illegal substance following an inspection from the crew chief, Pat Ragazzo of SI.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz failed the "sticky substance" check upon entering the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with the Mets up 5-2. If MLB concurs with the crew chief's assessment, Diaz will receive an automatic 10-game suspension, so the Mets may be without their closer for some time. Expect a decision on a suspension to be announced before the Mets' next game Tuesday versus the Yankees. Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino would likely be first in line for saves should Diaz receive a 10-game ban and choose not to appeal. |
Jun 18 2024 | Diaz earned the save in Tuesday's 7-6 victory over San Francisco. He pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and no walks with no strikeouts. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an RBI double by Pete Alonso provided New York with the lead in the top of the ninth inning, Diaz entered in the bottom of the frame to gather his second save since returning from the injured list June 13. The flamethrowing closer yielded a leadoff single to Jonah Heim before inducing a groundball double play and flyout for his seventh save this season. After struggling with an 8.68 ERA over 9.1 innings in May, Diaz looks healthy again and has regained control of the Mets closer role. |
Jun 15 2024 | Diaz gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his sixth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Padres. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A leadoff single by Jurickson Profar and a stolen base by pinch runner Jose Azocar created another nervous ninth for the Mets, but Diaz buckled down after that and fanned Manny Machado and Jake Cronenworth to preserve the win. Diaz's velocity appears to be all the way back -- his fastest pitch Friday hit 100 mph -- and he's looked to be in just about peak form in two appearances since recovering from a shoulder impingement. The 30-year-old right-hander is just 6-for-10 in converting save chances in 2024, but as long as he's healthy he should be locked in as the Mets' closer. |
Jun 14 2024 | Diaz (2-1) struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Thursday to pick up the win over the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander looked good in his first appearance since May 25, topping out at 99.6 mph with his fastball. Diaz had been on the IL with a shoulder impingement before being activated Thursday, but he hadn't been his usual dominant self even before getting shut down -- so far in 2024 he has a 16.7 percent whiff rate, one of the lowest marks of his career and a massive drop from the 25.2 percent rate he delivered last year. While his results were impressive Thursday, Diaz managed only two swinging strikes on 15 pitches, suggesting that he may not be fully back in form yet. |
Jun 13 2024 | The Mets reinstated Diaz (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement. He fired two shutout innings with High-A Brooklyn during a rehab assignment, and manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that the Mets will make Diaz their closer once again after the team had used a committee approach leading up to the injury. The 30-year-old righty currently owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.25 WHIP alongside a 30:7 K:BB through 20 innings on the year and has converted five of his nine save opportunities. |
Jun 12 2024 | Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Diaz (shoulder) will immediately become the team's closer upon his activation from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had been part of a committee at closer for the Mets prior to landing on the IL with a right shoulder impingement in late May. However, Mendoza is now ready to restore Diaz to his old role beginning with Thursday's contest against the Marlins. Diaz has converted four of his nine save chances this season while holding a 5.40 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 20 innings. |
Jun 11 2024 | Mets manager Carlos Mendoz said Tuesday that Diaz (shoulder) will be activated from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is done with his rehab assignment after making two scoreless appearances with High-A Brooklyn. However, the Mets will wait a couple more days before returning the reliever to the active roster. Mendoza didn't divulge plans for Diaz's immediate role, but he should serve as the club's closer sooner rather than later. Diaz has been out since late May with a right shoulder impingement. |
Jun 9 2024 | Diaz (right shoulder impingement) pitched a scoreless inning Sunday for High-A Brooklyn and could rejoin the Mets as soon as Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A report from earlier in the week suggested Diaz could return Wednesday or Thursday, so this report bumps up his potential return by a day. Catcher Francisco Alvarez (left thumb surgery) is also tracking toward a potential return Tuesday. |

Jun 7 2024 | Diaz (shoulder) said after his rehab appearance with High-A Brooklyn on Thursday that he will get one more rehab outing Sunday before being activated from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday or Thursday, SNY reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning for Brooklyn in his first rehab appearance. The reliever was pleased with his performance, saying after the game that his fastball had "new life" and his slider felt "great." Diaz is on track to return to the Mets' bullpen next week, although it's not clear whether he will serve as the team's closer right away. |
Jun 5 2024 | Diaz (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Brooklyn on Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz threw a successful bullpen session Tuesday and has now been cleared to test things out in a game setting. He is eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list on June 11 when the Mets return home from London. Barring a setback, Diaz should be ready to go that day. Whether he is used as the closer right away upon his return is unclear, as Diaz's struggles prior to getting hurt had led to him sharing save chances with others. |
Jun 4 2024 | Diaz (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz threw 21 pitches during his mound session, and manager Carlos Mendoza said afterward that there is a good chance the 30-year-old reliever begins a rehab assignment in the minors Thursday. It's unclear how many minor-league reps the Mets will give their star closer, but the fact Diaz is already able to begin an assignment likely signals that he will only require a minimum-length stint on the IL. |
May 29 2024 | The Mets placed Diaz on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right shoulder impingement. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Left-hander Josh Walker was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Diaz's spot on the 26-man active roster and in the New York bullpen. After blowing ninth-inning leads in four of his last five appearances, Diaz had already been expected to get a break from closing duties, and his injury will only further delay his opportunity to resurface as the Mets' preferred ninth-inning man. Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino likely represent the best bets for saves out of the Mets bullpen while Diaz is on the shelf. |
May 26 2024 | Diaz gave up a run on two hits and struck out one in the ninth inning Saturday, blowing his fourth save of the season in a 7-2 extra-inning loss to the Giants. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the right-hander tossed a scoreless inning and recorded a hold Friday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza gave Diaz another shot at closing with the team clinging to a 2-1 lead. He couldn't get the job done, giving up two singles with a stolen base in between to tie the game before Sean Reid-Foley and Josh Walker combined for a disastrous 10th inning. Diaz has blown three straight save chances and four of five since May 5, stumbling to an 11.05 ERA in 7.1 innings over that stretch despite an 11:3 K:BB. Diaz last had struggles like this in 2019 and was eventually able to find his form again, but the Mets will be hard-pressed to use him in high-leverage spots until he shows some consistency. |
May 19 2024 | Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday that Diaz's bullpen role will be more "fluid" for the near future, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old surrendered four runs in his third blown save of the season Saturday and admitted that his confidence is down with seven runs allowed in his past three outings, so the Mets won't rely on him to be their primary closer for a bit. Diaz is still viewed as the club's closer long term but is now likely to see some lower-leverage work in an attempt to get him back on track. Adam Ottavino and Reed Garrett are the likely candidates to step in for save chances in the meantime. |
May 18 2024 | Diaz allowed four runs on four hits while recording just one out in Saturday's loss to the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets handed the ball to Diaz with a four-run advantage in the bottom of the ninth inning. He permitted a leadoff double and watched that run come around on a one-out single. Another single put two runners on and Josh Bell cashed them and himself in when he sent a ball 428 feet to center field for a three-run homer. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza pulled Diaz at that point. While this didn't officially go down as a blown save, it continued an ugly stretch for Diaz, who has allowed 10 runs over his last eight appearances covering 8.1 frames. When asked after the game about a potential change at closer, Mendoza didn't dismiss it, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. Diaz himself even said he'd be open to working in low-leverage spots for a while as he tries to get back on track. If Mendoza does opt to switch things up, Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino look to be the top candidates to step in at closer. |
May 16 2024 | Diaz blew the save Thursday against Philadelphia, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over one inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz inherited a one-run lead for the bottom of the ninth but didn't convert his sixth save of 2024. Instead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh and then allowed Marsh to reach second on a wild pitch before Bryson Stott hit an RBI single to send the game into extras. Diaz has blown three of his last four save chances and has allowed six runs over his last eight innings. |
May 13 2024 | Diaz blew the save Monday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batter. He had one strikeout over one inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz looked extremely unsettled Monday night, issuing his first free passes since April 20, ending a streak of eight walk-free innings. Even more indicative of his unsteady control, the Mets closer allowed the tying run to score by beaning Alec Bohm with the bases loaded. Despite the ugly outing Monday, Diaz is cemented as the Mets closer with his ERA standing at 3.24 over 16.2 innings. |
May 6 2024 | Diaz earned a save against the Cardinals on Monday, striking out one batter in a perfect ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz blew his first save of the season Sunday against Tampa Bay, but he went right back to work with the Mets holding a one-run ninth-inning lead a day later. The star closer didn't falter this time, retiring all three batters he faced on 11 pitches. The save was Diaz's fifth of the campaign and his first since April 15. |
May 5 2024 | Diaz blew the save Sunday against the Rays, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts over one inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was tagged for a solo home run by Randy Arozarena in the ninth frame, his second long ball allowed in three appearances. Diaz hasn't generated a save since April 15 and is now 4-for-5 on save chances this season with an overall ERA of 2.63 through 13.2 innings. |
Apr 29 2024 | Diaz (0-1) took the loss Monday against the Cubs, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts across one inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz spoiled Luis Severino's eight-inning gem, allowing a double to Mike Tauchman and a two-run home run to Christopher Morel in the final frame to put the Cubs ahead 3-1, where the score would remain. The loss was Diaz's first true blemish of the campaign, being a perfect 4-for-4 in save chances with no prior losses. His ERA jumped from 0.93 to 2.53 following Monday's contest and his WHIP sits at 0.94 through 10.2 innings. |
Apr 20 2024 | Diaz walked two and struck out two in a scoreless two-thirds of an inning Saturday, recording his first hold of the season in a 6-4 win over the Dodgers. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mets manager Carlos Mendoza called on his closer to protect a two-run lead with one on and one out in the eighth inning, but Diaz walked the bases loaded before escaping the jam, needing 20 pitches (nine strikes) to do it. As a result, Reed Garrett came on in the ninth and struck out the side to secure the save. Diaz has yet to have an appearance of longer than one inning this season, so it's not clear if Mendoza would have allowed the right-hander to try and get more than three outs had the eighth gone smoothly. Either way, Diaz remains the team's clear closer and sports a 1.17 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB through his first 7.2 innings this season. |
Apr 18 2024 | Diaz attributes his early-season velocity drop to his mechanics being a little off after he missed the entire 2023 season with a knee injury, Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic report. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has averaged 96.6 mph with his four-seam fastball through his first seven appearances this season, down from the 99.1 mph he averaged in 2022 and even the 98.1 mph he averaged in April 2022. Diaz indicated Monday that he was pulling a bit to the first-base side with his delivery, something that seems like he should be able to correct fairly quickly. The velocity drop hasn't impacted his performance, as Diaz has converted all four of his save chances with an impressive 1.29 ERA, 0.57 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB through seven innings. |
Apr 15 2024 | Diaz picked up the save Monday against the Pirates. He pitched one shutout inning, allowing no hits and one walk with two strikeouts. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz posted his second save in as many days, using 18 pitches to close out the Pirates. The 30-year-old reliever bounced back Monday to fire a scoreless inning after yielding a home run Sunday. Diaz has returned to his role as an elite closer with a 1.29 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 10:2 KK:BB over his first seven innings. |
Apr 14 2024 | Diaz allowed a run on one hit while striking out one batter Sunday. He picked up a save over the Royals in one inning of work. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was tasked with protecting a 2-0 lead and closed the door despite coughing up a two-out solo shot to Vinnie Pasquantino. Through six innings, Diaz owns an impressive 9:1 K:BB while giving up just one earned run and converting all three of his save chances. The homer he allowed Sunday was the first hit against him since his season debut March 30. |
Apr 7 2024 | Diaz pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save in Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Reds. He struck out two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was dominant in picking up his second save of the series, needing just 12 pitches to finish off the Reds. Sunday represented Diaz's fifth appearance of the season. He's allowed only two baserunners and has struck out eight while not allowing an earned run over five frames. |
Apr 5 2024 | Diaz gave up one unearned run during the ninth inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-2 victory over Cincinnati. He struck out one batter and walked one. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After missing all of last season due to a torn right patellar tendon he suffered during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, Diaz was able to convert on his first save opportunity of 2024. The 30-year-old closer remains perfect with a 0.00 ERA through four appearances on the year and boasts a 6:1 K:BB through four innings. |
Apr 1 2024 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning during the Mets' loss to Detroit on Monday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz kept the game tied in the ninth inning to force the game into the 10th but the Mets ultimately fell to 0-4. The star closer has yet to see a save attempt in 2024 but he's fanned three batters in two scoreless frames. He's locked into his closing role with the Mets and should begin to see the save chances rolling in soon. |
Mar 21 2024 | Diaz (personal) has struck out one while allowing one earned run on zero hits and two walks over 1.2 innings in two Grapefruit League appearances for the Mets since leaving camp last week to attend to a personal matter. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was away from the team last week to witness the birth of his child, but he returned to action Sunday and then made another appearance Wednesday. With Diaz's surgically repaired left knee having thus far provided no complications for him this spring, he's in line to reclaim his role as the Mets' closer in 2024. |
Mar 13 2024 | Diaz will be away from the Mets' camp for several days to be with his wife, who is expected to give birth within the next week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's absence from camp shouldn't have an impact on his Opening Day availability. The 29-year-old looked sharp during his spring debut Monday against the Marlins, striking out the side in a perfect inning. |
Mar 12 2024 | Diaz topped out at 98 mph with his fastball while striking out the side in a perfect fifth inning during Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seeing his first game action in almost exactly a year after he blew out his knee in the WBC last March, Diaz fanned Jesus Sanchez, Avisail Garcia and Jon Berti and showed no rust at all in his return to the mound. The right-hander fired nine of 14 pitches for strikes, and he's on track to resume the closing duties that saw him record exactly 32 saves in 2021 and 2022 for the Mets. |
Mar 10 2024 | Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Sunday that Diaz will make his Grapefruit League debut Monday against the Tigers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old reported to camp fully healthy after missing all of last season due to a torn patellar tendon, but the Mets elected to ease him into things during the early stages of spring training. Diaz will likely continue ramping up his workload over the final weeks of camp, and he should return to the ranks of the best closers in MLB in 2024. |
Feb 13 2024 | Diaz (knee) had no issues after throwing a bullpen session Monday on a back mound at the Mets' spring training complex, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "Finally back," the right-hander said after the session. "I'm ready to go." Diaz missed the entire 2023 campaign due to a knee injury he suffered in the World Baseball Classic, but he appears fully recovered from surgery and ready to resume his role as the Mets' closer. While he is throwing off a mound, the 29-year-old has yet to begin fielding bunts or covering bases during defensive drills, but those milestones will happen soon enough as spring training ramps up. Diaz recorded 32 saves in both 2021 and 2022, and if he stays healthy in 2024, he figures to deliver similar numbers again. |
Dec 4 2023 | Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Diaz is "fully healthy" after completing his recovery from the patellar tendon surgery he required on his right knee last March, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming off a brilliant 2022 campaign in which he converted 32 of 35 save chances while posting a 1.31 ERA and striking out 118 over 62 innings, Diaz profiled as arguably the top closer in fantasy drafts heading into last spring, but his season was quickly torpedoed before it even started after he injured his knee while celebrating a win for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Diaz didn't experience any setbacks while completing what had been expected to be a six-month recovery from surgery, and though he had hoped to pitch at some point in September, the Mets chose not to activate him as they played out the string on a non-contending season. Mendoza wasn't willing to fully commit to Diaz being in store for a normal spring training, but the right-hander is seemingly facing no restrictions in his throwing program so far this offseason and should settle back into the closer's role for the Mets by the time Opening Day arrives. |
Sep 18 2023 | The Mets announced Monday that Diaz (knee) won't be activated from the 60-day injured list this season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A return for the final week of the regular season or the postseason might have been in play for Diaz if the Mets were in playoff contention, but the veteran closer won't be rushed back into action in light of the team's place in the standings. Since undergoing surgery in March to repair a torn patellar tendon suffered during the World Baseball Classic, Diaz has seemingly navigated the rehab process free of setbacks. He'll continue to throw bullpen sessions through the end of September and should be in store for a relatively normal offseason before he likely enters spring training without any restrictions. Diaz's continued absence should insulate Adam Ottavino as the Mets' top option for saves the rest of the way. |
Sep 5 2023 | Diaz (knee) is scheduled to throw two bullpen sessions this week in front of the Mets' major-league coaching staff, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Those workouts could go a long way toward determining whether Diaz will be allowed to pitch in the majors this season. That he's traveling with the Mets on their current road trip is a positive sign, but manager Buck Showalter continues to call it a week-to-week situation. The 29-year-old required surgery this spring after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee while celebrating Team Puerto Rico's victory over Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. |
Aug 28 2023 | Diaz (knee) threw a bullpen session Sunday and sported a fastball that sat around 93-to-95 miles per hour, Pat Ragazzo of SI.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz averaged 99 mph with his heater during the 2022 season, but Ragazzo notes that the right-hander didn't appear to be throwing at 100 percent effort. In any case, Diaz has reached a major milestone in his recovery from patellar tendon surgery by completing a bullpen session for the first time since suffering the knee injury in mid-March while playing for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. As has been the case since he underwent surgery, Diaz remained adamant Monday that his goal is to pitch again for the Mets in 2023. Even though the club isn't in playoff contention, Diaz could still get the green light to pitch for the big club in the closing weeks of the season if he navigates his throwing progression without any complications. |
Aug 16 2023 | Diaz (knee) threw off a mound in the bullpen Wednesday, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear whether it was a regular bullpen session or a touch-and-feel situation, but either way, it's the first time Diaz has thrown from the rubber since he underwent patellar tendon surgery in March. Prior to Wednesday's session, he had done some throwing from the base of the mound. Diaz and the Mets have not ruled out a late-season return for the star reliever, but it's far from a guarantee that it will happen. Fantasy managers shouldn't be counting on him to contribute again until 2024. |
Aug 14 2023 | Diaz (knee) recently began throwing from the base of the mound, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will continue the process for another week or so and could progress to full mound work after that, although Mets general manager Billy Eppler would not commit to that. "Let's just really focus on the process," Eppler said. "What are we doing today, and was today successful? Will we repeat today? And how many days would we repeat before we move to the next phase? When we get a chance to get some objective data as well as subjective data -- feedback from the player -- then we can see what comes next." Diaz has been holding out hope for a late-season return from patellar tendon surgery, but it's not a guarantee it will happen. With his team turning the page to 2024, they might decide it's not worth pushing Diaz to return this season. |
Jul 27 2023 | Diaz (knee) played catch at Citi Field on Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Healy notes that Diaz was throwing from center field to the foul line in right field, a substantial distance as he ramps up his rehab program. The 29-year-old closer has stated that he wants to return this season from March surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, through he still has quite a few hurdles to clear and the Mets are currently 7.5 games back of the third wild-card spot in the National League. The Mets might rather have him focus toward getting fully healthy for spring training. |
Jun 1 2023 | Diaz (knee) told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that he believes he can join the Mets before the end of the season. "If everything keeps going how it's going, we've got a chance to pitch," said Diaz. "The trainers and doctors will decide, but I feel great. Let's see what's coming for us." | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mets general manager Billy Eppler initially announced in mid-March that Diaz would miss eight months -- thus the entire 2023 season -- after the closer suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee while celebrating Team Puerto Rico's win over Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Then came word in April that it could be closer to a six-month overall recovery process, which would point him toward a return sometime in mid-to-late September. Diaz has been doing some light jogging and other cardio workouts, though there's currently no timetable for when he might resume throwing. |
Mar 30 2023 | The Mets placed Diaz (knee) on the 60-day injured list Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's move to the 60-day IL was fully expected after he recently underwent surgery to address a tore patellar tendon in his right knee, an injury he sustained while celebrating Team Puerto Rico's win over Team Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic earlier this month. With Diaz facing an estimated six-month recovery from surgery, he appears unlikely to be available during the regular season, and even a return in October or November if the Mets make a deep playoff run seems implausible. Manager Buck Showalter has yet to name a new closer in Diaz's absence, though veteran relievers David Robertson, Adam Ottavino and Brooks Raley look to be the most likely candidates to pick up saves. |
Mar 16 2023 | Diaz underwent successful surgery to repair his patellar tendon Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz tore his tendon during a celebration on the field after Puerto Rico's victory over the Dominican Republic in Wednesday's World Baseball Classic matchup. He is expected to begin a rehab program in a week, but he is a long shot to pitch at any point in 2023. |
Mar 15 2023 | Diaz injured his right knee while celebrating Puerto Rico's victory over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday in the World Baseball Classic and will undergo imaging on his knee Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After striking out the side to secure the victory for Puerto Rico, Diaz was swarmed by his teammates on the mound before collapsing. He needed to be taken off the field in a wheelchair and appeared to be in a great deal of pain. He could face an extended absence, but we'll know more once his test results come back Thursday. |
Nov 6 2022 | Diaz and the Mets agreed to a five-year, $102 million contract Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was slated to become a free agent during the offseason and would have undoubtedly drawn interest from plenty of teams, but he'll instead remain with the Mets on the largest contract for a reliever in history, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Diaz was one of the most dominant closers in baseball in 2022, converting 32 of 35 save chances while posting a 1.31 ERA and 0.84 WHIP while striking out 118 batters in 61 innings. His new agreement with the Mets includes an opt-out after the third season and a full no-trade clause as well as a $20 million team option for the 2028 season. |
Oct 5 2022 | Diaz struck out one in 1.1 perfect innings to record his 32nd save of the season in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The dominant righty converted his 22nd consecutive save chance, with his last blown save coming back in late May. Diaz has been almost untouchable all season, posting a career-best 50.2 percent strikeout rate to support his 1.31 ERA and 0.84 WHIP through 62 innings. |
Sep 20 2022 | Diaz got the save Tuesday versus the Brewers after he pitched 1.1 perfect innings while striking out three batters. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, tasked with protecting a 7-5 lead with a runner on first. The right-hander made quick work of Rowdy Tellez, striking him out to end the frame before he set the Brewers down in order in the ninth, registering two more punchouts in the final inning. Diaz is now up to 31 saves on the campaign and has converted his last 21 save opportunities. Since the All-Star break, the closer has produced a 0.87 ERA and 0.68 WHIP with 35 punchouts over 20.2 innings in 19 appearances while going 11-for-11 on save chances. |
Sep 17 2022 | Diaz picked up the save Friday against the Pirates, walking one and striking out two over 1.2 scoreless innings. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's save Friday was his 30th of the season, good for seventh in baseball. It was his first save since Aug. 31 and the third time he was called upon to save the game across multiple innings. After seeing his ERA spike to 1.52 at the beginning of the month, Diaz has pitched well, giving up no runs and two hits across 3.1 innings over his last three appearances. His season ERA now sits at 1.43. |
Aug 31 2022 | Diaz earned a save against the Dodgers on Wednesday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz faced a daunting task in going up against Trea Turner, Freddie Freeman and Will Smith with a one-run lead in the ninth inning, but he needed only nine pitches to set the trio down in order. In doing so, he extended his streak of successful save conversions to 19, with his last blown save coming in late May. Over 33 games since that meltdown against the Giants, Diaz has allowed only two runs over 33.2 innings while posting a 66:7 K:BB. |
Aug 26 2022 | Diaz (3-1) allowed a hit and struck out one in one inning and earned a win over the Rockies on Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz tossed a scoreless ninth inning and picked up the win after the Mets walked it off in the bottom of the frame. It was his first win since May 29 and he lowered his season ERA to 1.40 through 51 appearances. The 28-year-old has given up just one run over his last 24 frames. |
Aug 21 2022 | Diaz allowed one run on two hits and a walk while picking up a save over the Phillies on Sunday. He struck out one batter in one inning of work. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's 21-inning scoreless streak came to an end but he still converted his 18th straight save. He's sporting a 1.46 ERA with a 97:15 K:BB through 49.1 frames. Diaz has now picked up 28 saves in 31 chances while snagging a pair of holds this season. |
Aug 14 2022 | Diaz issued two walks but did not give up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in a 1-0 win over the Phillies on Saturday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz issued a couple of free passes and allowed the winning run to get into scoring position on a successful double steal by the Phillies, but he turned to his slider on a 2-2 count to get Nick Castellanos to chase and end the close game with a dramatic strikeout. The save gives Diaz 27 on the year, which is tied for third-best in the majors. The 28-year-old closer has not given up an earned run dating back to June 18 and boasts a sparkling ERA of 1.33. |
Aug 7 2022 | Diaz struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn the save in Sunday's 5-2 win over Atlanta. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz faced the top of the order, retiring Dansby Swanson, Matt Olson and Austin Riley on a combined 14 pitches (10 strikes). This was Diaz's sixth straight appearance with a save. He extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings, a span in which he's allowed seven hits, one walk and a hit batter while striking out 38. The dominant closer has a 1.39 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 91:12 K:BB and 26 saves through 45.1 innings this year. |
Aug 4 2022 | Diaz allowed a hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings to earn the save in Thursday's 6-4 win over Atlanta. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was just the third time this year Diaz has been asked to get more than three outs. He was fresh, having not pitched since July 29, and he didn't show any rust in a typical shutdown performance. The Mets' closer has not allowed a run in 16.1 innings, and he's converted 10 of his 24 saves this season in that impressive span. He owns a 1.44 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 87:12 K:BB through 43.2 innings. |
Jul 29 2022 | Diaz struck out all three batters he faced and earned a save over the Marlings on Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz threw all 10 of his pitches for strikes and rolled straight through Miami's lineup to finish off the 6-4 win. He's now converted 23 of 26 save chances this season, including 13 straight dating back to May 27. The 28-year-old is riding a 14.1-inning scoreless streak, allowing just six hits with a remarkable 31:1 K:BB during that stretch. On the year, Diaz is sporting an 84:12 K:BB with a 1.51 ERA through 42 appearances. |
Jul 26 2022 | Diaz earned the save, striking out four and allowing one hit in 1.1 innings in a 6-3 victory Tuesday over the Yankees. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered the game with two outs and a man on first in the eighth inning and struck out Joey Gallo. In the ninth, the Yankees threatened with two on and one out but Diaz struck out the final two batters to end the game. The 28-year-old is now 22-for-25 in save chances this year and has fanned 51.6 percent of the batters he's faced. Over his last 13.1 innings, he has not allowed a run and has a 28:1 K:BB. |
Jul 24 2022 | Diaz struck out one without allowing a baserunner in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Padres. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It didn't look like Diaz would be needed initially, but Joely Rodriguez allowed four straight batters to reach base to begin the ninth inning. Diaz would allow one inherited runner to score on a groundout, but he was able to protect the lead for his 21st save of the season. The closer extended his scoreless streak to 12 innings in 13 appearances since June 22. He's added a 24:1 K:BB in that span, and he's trimmed his ERA from 2.30 to 1.60 while providing dominant late-innings work. |
Jul 16 2022 | Diaz picked up the save in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs. He threw a perfect frame and struck out two on 10 pitches. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is on an otherworldly run. He's recorded multiple strikeouts in each of his last nine appearances, with a total of two hits allowed in that span. |
May 25 2022 | Diaz (1-1) took the loss and blew the save during Tuesday's 13-12 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was brought in to protect a one-run lead in the ninth and was able to erase a leadoff single on a double play, but a walk and three singles immediately followed to give San Francisco a walk-off victory. The blown save is Diaz's third overall and second in his last three games. Diaz now possesses a 2.89 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 34:9 K:BB ratio in 18.2 innings. |

He struck out two . | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz allowed a game-tying RBI single to Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the ninth but was able to limit the damage by striking out Juan Yepez looking. The 28-year-old right-hander is nine for 11 on save opportunities to start the year, but his strikeout numbers (32 through 17 innings) are on pace with the best closers in the league. |

He boasts an eye-popping 50.0 percent strikeout rate that would be the best of his career if he can keep it up, and Diaz's 1.69 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and nine saves in 10 chances aren't too shabby either. |

Apr 26 2022 | Diaz walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Monday to record his second save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Cardinals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has seen only three save chances through his first eight appearances this season, but that's been a product of the Mets' offense piling up the runs most nights. Diaz has been sharp when called upon regardless of the situation, posting a 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB through eight innings, and there's little doubt the saves will come. |

Apr 12 2022 | Diaz was activated off the bereavement list Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets' bullpen struggled in Diaz's absence, with Trevor May (arm) and Seth Lugo combining to allow five runs the eighth inning Monday against the Phillies, leading to a loss. Diaz should immediately reclaim the closer role upon his return. |
Apr 8 2022 | Diaz will be placed on the bereavement list by the Mets on Saturday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz didn't appear in Friday's win over the Nationals, and he'll miss between three and seven games following the death of his grandfather. |
Mar 25 2022 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect inning of work during Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Entering the game in the second inning and facing a Miami lineup mostly made up of big-league regulars, Diaz got Joey Wendle swinging and Brian Anderson looking before Nick Fortes tapped a weak grounder back to the right-hander for the final out of the frame. Diaz heads into his fourth season with the Mets having gone 64-for-80 on save chances during his tenure with the team, and another 30-plus saves in 2022 seems well within reach. |

Though his 3.50 ERA is higher than fantasy managers might have anticipated, a 2.52 FIP, 1.07 WHIP and a 25.2 K-BB% all exemplify how dependable he's been at the back of the New York bullpen, despite some high-profile blowups. |
Sep 19 2021 | Diaz saved Sunday's 3-2 triumph over the Phillies, hitting a batter and striking out one in the ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was called upon in the ninth to protect a one-run lead and delivered a clean outing aside from a HBP in his first save situation since last Sunday. The 27-year-old has now thrown four straight scoreless innings and appears to be back on track following a rough stretch earlier this month. |
Sep 12 2021 | Diaz saved Sunday's 7-6 triumph over the Yankees, allowing a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in the ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After recording two blown saves and two losses in his last three appearances, Diaz finally came through Sunday though the outing was far from seamless. The hard-throwing righty put two Yankees on with one out but got Brett Gardner looking and induced a Giancarlo Stanton pop out to end the game and earn his 29th save. Diaz has now surrendered four runs in four September innings across five appearances and is difficult to trust given his recent performance. |
Sep 6 2021 | Diaz (5-5) took the loss Monday while blowing his sixth save of the season, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks in only one-third of an inning as the Mets fell 4-3 to the Nationals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Called upon to protect a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, Diaz walked the first batter he faced on four pitches. After getting Juan Soto to fly out, the right-hander issued another free pass and then served up singles to the unheralded Andrew Stevenson and Carter Kieboom, the latter being a walkoff. Diaz has hit another rough patch at the worst possible time for a Mets squad fighting to get back into the playoff picture, blowing his last two save chances and giving up four runs with a 2:3 K:BB over 1.1 innings in that time. |
Sep 4 2021 | Diaz (5-4) picked up the win in Friday's 6-2 extra-inning victory over the Nationals, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk in the ninth inning. He struck out two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets closer was called upon to protect a 2-0 lead but instead blew his fifth save of the season, serving up a leadoff blast to Juan Soto before walking Ryan Zimmerman with one out and getting tagged for an RBI double by Riley Adams. Fortunately for Diaz, the Mets immediately responded with four runs in the top of the 10th. The blown save was his first since July 19 and left him 28-for-33 in converting save chances on the year, to go along with a 3.62 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 79:20 K:BB through 54.2 innings. |

He also boasts a 23:3 K:BB over 16 innings in that time. |
Sep 1 2021 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect seventh inning Tuesday to record his 27th save of the season in the second game of a doubleheader against the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old hasn't blown a save since July 19, posting a stellar 1.20 ERA. 0.60 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB over his last 15 innings while racking up eight saves. When Diaz is locked in, there are few better closers in baseball, but the Mets will need him to stay focused in September if they're going to climb back into the playoff picture. |
Aug 28 2021 | Diaz recorded a strikeout over a shutout inning of work Saturday night, picking up his 26th save of the season in the Mets' 5-3 win over the Nationals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going four straight appearances without a save, Diaz made the most of his opportunity Saturday night. Though he did plunk Riley Adams with a pitch to bring the tying run to the plate, the right-hander needed just 10 pitches to secure the win for the Mets. The 27-year-old now has a 2.00 ERA in August, well below his season mark of 3.48. |
Aug 12 2021 | Diaz delivered a scoreless seventh inning during Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Nationals to earn the save. He gave up one hit and had zero strikeouts or walks. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz delivered a scoreless frame Wednesday to record the save, so he's unlikely to be available for Game 2 of the twin bill given he's already pitched back-to-back days. The right-hander has converted six straight saves and has a 2.57 ERA in eight innings since blowing three consecutive save chances in mid-July. |
Aug 6 2021 | Diaz will be activated from the paternity list ahead of Friday's game against the Phillies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had been on the paternity list since Wednesday due to the birth of his son, but he arrived at Citizens Bank Park in time to join the bullpen for Friday's contest. The right-hander earned a win and four saves across his last five appearances prior to his absence, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out nine in five innings during that time. |
Aug 4 2021 | The Mets placed Diaz on the paternity list Wednesday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is expected to remain away from the team for 1-to-3 days while he observes the birth of his child. Diaz settled in after that, fanning Kyle Farmer and Joey Votto and inducing a Tyler Naquin lineout. Brandon Drury secured the win for Diaz and the Mets in the bottom of the inning, singling home Kevin Pillar for the walk-off victory. Diaz owns a .380 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 42.2 innings this season while nailing down 23 of 27 save chances. |
Jul 28 2021 | Diaz gave up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 23rd save of the season in a 2-1 win over Atlanta. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander very nearly blew his fifth save of the season and fourth in July instead, but after a leadoff double by Abraham Almonte, Michael Conforto threw out Almonte at the plate as he attempted to score on a one-out single. Diaz failed to fan a batter in an appearance for the first time since June 29, and on the season he sports a 3.89 ERA and 61:17 K:BB through 41.2 innings. |
Jul 27 2021 | Diaz struck out the side in a perfect seventh inning to record his 22nd save of the season in a 1-0 win over Atlanta during the second game of Monday's doubleheader. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He needed only 14 pitches (nine strikes) to plow through Atlanta's 5-6-7 hitters. |

Jul 24 2021 | Diaz struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Friday to record his 20th save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was dialed in, firing nine of 10 pitches for strikes while carving up the heart of the Toronto order. The performance was a far cry from Diaz's previous few efforts as he'd blown three straight save chances coming into Friday, but Mets manager Luis Rojas doesn't seem ready to yank him from the closer spot quite yet. |
Jul 20 2021 | Manager Luis Rojas said he plans to utilize Diaz if a save situation arises Tuesday in Cincinnati, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has blown three straight saves with seven runs allowed on seven hits and three walks across three frames during that stretch, but the Mets skipper is going to stick with him for the time being. Trevor May figures to be the next man up for save opportunities, but Diaz will receive at least one more chance to turn things around as New York's closer. |
Jul 17 2021 | Diaz (3-4) allowed four runs on two hits and one walk over 0.2 innings in a blown save Saturday against the Pirates. He struck out a pair. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz gave up a walk-off grand slam to Pittsburgh catcher Jacob Stallings with two outs in the ninth inning, the second straight blown save for the New York closer. Diaz has allowed runs in four of his last five appearances, causing his ERA to balloon from 2.84 to 4.17. He issued a walk to load the bases, but escaped the jam by striking out Michael Perez and Ke'Bryan Hayes. Diaz didn't get so lucky in the ninth inning, as Pittsburgh gained the lead by scoring two runs with two outs on his watch. Jeff McNeil's two-RBI walkoff single gave Diaz his second win in his last four outings. The Mets' closer has a steady 2.94 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 45:13 K:BB across 33.2 innings this season. He's also 18-for-19 in save chances. |

Diaz has been scored upon in three of his last six appearances, but he hasn't blown a save since June 1. On the season, the 27-year-old closer has a 3.03 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 43:11 K:BB through 32.2 innings. |

He's also maintained a strong 2.84 ERA with a 41:10 K:BB across 31.2 frames on the season. |

He's given up just one run in his last 9.1 innings, which came in his lone blown save of the year versus Arizona on June 1. |
Jun 2 2021 | Diaz pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout to earn the save in Wednesday's 7-6 win over Arizona. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander blew a save Tuesday, but he delivered a strong bounce-back outing Wednesday. Diaz is now 10-for-11 in save chances this season. He's pitched to a 3.22 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB in 22.1 innings, and he's yet to allow a home run this year. |
May 27 2021 | Diaz picked up his ninth save of the season Thursday after striking out one in a perfect seventh inning in the Mets' 1-0 win over the Rockies in Game 1 of a doubleheader. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered the ninth frame with the Mets holding onto a two-run lead. He came out hot, needing just three pitches to send Charlie Blackmon down on strikes. He then walked C.J. Cron before punching out his final two batters of the night, remaining perfect in save opportunities and helping the Mets snap a three-game losing streak. Across 19.1 innings this year, Diaz has compiled a 3.10 ERA. |
May 25 2021 | Diaz picked up the save Tuesday against the Rockies after striking out three batters while allowing one walk during a scoreless inning. Across 19.1 innings this year, Diaz has compiled a 3.26 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. |
May 19 2021 | Diaz recorded a save Tuesday against the Braves after pitching a scoreless ninth inning, fanning two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz came into the game with a one-run lead and closed the door fairly quickly, fanning two of the three batters he faced and closing things out with a Pablo Sandoval flyout. The right-hander, who tossed nine of his 12 pitches for strikes, is now 7-for-7 in save opportunities this season while sporting a 3.63 ERA across 17.1 innings in 17 appearances. |
May 17 2021 | Diaz picked up the save after allowing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning Monday against the Braves. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz issued a walk to Freddie Freeman with one out in the ninth inning, but he was able to quickly retire the next two batters to nail down the save. The right-hander is a perfect 6-for-6 in save situations this season despite an unimpressive 3.86 ERA across 16.1 innings. |
May 9 2021 | Diaz allowed one hit and struck out three over 1.2 innings to earn the save in Sunday's 4-2 win over Arizona. He also hit a batter. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered with a runner on second and promptly plunked the next batter before inducing a double play to get out of trouble in the eighth inning. He handled the ninth with less drama and recorded his fifth save of the year. Diaz has a 3.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB across 14.1 innings, and he remains the favorite for closing duties. |
May 6 2021 | Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits to earn the save in the win over the Cardinals on Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz pitched for the first time Thursday since exiting Sunday's game with back tightness. He allowed the tying run to come up to the plate before retiring the final two batters. It was a nice bounceback performance after surrendering three earned runs in his last outing. The 27-year-old is a perfect 4-for-4 in save chances and has allowed earned runs in only two of his 12 appearances. |
May 3 2021 | Diaz (back) felt much better Monday after leaving Sunday's game against the Phillies with back tightness, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The initial diagnosis didn't seem like a particularly significant injury, and it appears as though Diaz is already trending in the right direction. The righty pitched both Saturday and Sunday, so he was unlikely to pitch Monday even if fully healthy. |
May 2 2021 | Diaz was removed from Sunday's win over the Phillies due to back tightness, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz admitted that he was dealing with a tight back during a mound visit with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but he tried to pitch through the injury. The issue likely contributed to his struggles in his appearance, and he'll be evaluated by the Mets on Monday to determine the severity of the injury. |
Apr 22 2021 | Diaz (1-1) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Cubs after allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two over 1.1 innings. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After entering a tied game in the ninth inning, Diaz gave up a leadoff single to Kris Bryant before sending his next two batters down on strikes. Bryant was then caught stealing to finish off the inning. Diaz returned in the 10th frame with less success, hitting Matt Duffy with a pitch before a sacrifice bunt by David Bote put two runners in scoring position. Diaz then proceeded to intentionally walk Eric Sogard, loading the bases with one out. The final verdict came in off a pinch hit, walk-off single by Jason Hayward, strapping Diaz and the Mets with the loss. The 27-year-old reliever has two saves on the year to go with a 2.57 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across seven innings. |
Apr 18 2021 | Diaz allowed a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday and earned a save over the Rockies. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It took Diaz a while to notch his first save but he picked up two against Colorado this weekend. After Trevor Story knocked a two-out single he was caught stealing to secure the game for the Mets. Diaz now owns a 3.18 ERA and 7:2 K:BB through 5.2 frames. |
Apr 17 2021 | Diaz struck out the side in a perfect seventh inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockies. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three strikeouts were swinging as Diaz blew fastballs past Josh Fuentes, Sam Hilliard and Dom Nunez. The right-hander had had one shaky appearance and four clean ones to begin the year, leading to a 3.86 ERA and 7:2 K:BB through 4.2 innings. |
Apr 10 2021 | Diaz gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning during Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Brought in to start the ninth inning with the Mets down 1-0, Diaz wasn't able to keep the game close after getting tagged for a leadoff double by Starling Marte. His line could have been even worse, but the Mets caught a break when Jesus Aguilar was called out on a fielder's choice at second base when on replay Jeff McNeil appeared to have lifted his foot off the bag early. Diaz's spot as closer isn't in jeopardy at the moment, but memories of his disastrous 2019 are still fresh enough that another bad outing or two could push manager Luis Rojas to consider other options in the ninth. |
Apr 8 2021 | Diaz (1-0) issued one walk and struck out one across a scoreless inning to earn the win Thursday against the Marlins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz made his season-debut with the team down 2-1 in the ninth inning. He did his part, with the only blemish being a two-out walk. The Mets proceeded to score two runs in the bottom of the frame, giving his initial win for the campaign. |
Mar 21 2021 | Diaz has given up only two hits and no earned runs over four Grapefruit League innings with a 6:0 K:BB. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has looked sharp this spring, and while Mets manager Luis Rojas has played coy when it comes to naming his closer, it's hard to imagine anyone other than Diaz handling ninth-inning duties to begin the season. He's posted a strikeout rate of at least 39.0 percent each of the last three years, and even when Diaz struggled in 2019, his issue was keeping the ball in the park, not striking batters out. MLB's switch to a slightly deader ball should help ensure the 26-year-old doesn't have that problem again. |
Feb 23 2021 | Diaz expects to close games for the Mets this season, though the team hasn't named an official closer and may not do so, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's hard to post more closer-worthy numbers than the ones Diaz managed last season, as he struck out 45.5 percent of opposing batters en route to a 1.75 ERA. Two of the five earned runs he allowed all season came in his first three outings, however, and combined with his 2019 struggles that proved to be enough for the Mets to drop him from closing duties for much of the year. He finished with just six saves. He remains the team's clear top reliever (especially with Seth Lugo likely to miss time following elbow surgery), but there's no guarantee he remains a true closer all season given the Mets' tendency to lose faith in him. Manager Luis Rojas kept open the possibility of using a more modern approach, sending Diaz out earlier in the game if a high-leverage situation pops up before the ninth or perhaps playing the matchups in the final frame, which could also limit his save numbers. |
Jan 15 2021 | Diaz and the Mets avoided arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $7 million deal, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz didn't manage to keep the closer job all season last year thanks to some early-season struggles, but his year-end numbers represented quite an impressive bounceback from his poor 2019 campaign. He finished the year with a career-low 1.75 ERA and a career-high 45.5 percent strikeout rate, presumably setting himself up quite well to be the Mets' closer again in 2021. |
Sep 24 2020 | Diaz gave up a run on two hits in the ninth inning Thursday against the Nationals but escaped with his sixth save of the season. He struck out one batter. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's streak of consecutive scoreless appearances ended at 10, but he eventually shut the door, making him 4-for-4 in save chances this month. The right-hander has a sparkling 1.80 ERA overall this season, though he lost the closer role for a while early on and it took Seth Lugo returning to the rotation for him to get it back. Diaz faces an uncertain future with the organization. |
Sep 23 2020 | Diaz worked around a base hit to turn in a scoreless ninth inning en route to notching his fifth save of the season Tuesday in the Mets' 5-2 win over the Rays. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz also struck out a batter in the 16-pitch outing, his 10th straight scoreless appearance. During that span, Diaz has compiled an eye-popping 20 strikeouts in 11 innings while allowing four hits and six walks. Manager Luis Rojas hasn't formally appointed a new closer since Seth Lugo joined the rotation in mid-August, but Diaz's usage (and success) in recent weeks suggests he's recaptured the job. |
Sep 17 2020 | Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth Wednesday, allowing one hit and striking out three to earn his fourth save of the season. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was called upon in the ninth to preserve a one-run lead after the Mets went ahead in the top half of the inning and struck out the side. After a rocky 2019, Diaz has returned to dominant form with a 1.71 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 45:11 K:BB across 21 innings this season. |
Sep 10 2020 | Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth Wednesday against the Orioles, allowing a hit while striking out a batter as he picked up save No. 3 on the season. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz allowed a quick single to begin the frame but retired the next three batters for his third save in six attempts. Despite being unable to consistently pick up saves, Diaz sports a 1.89 ERA along with a 39:11 K:BB across 19 innings and is locked into the team's closer role. |
Sep 4 2020 | Diaz (2-1) recorded the win in Thursday's extra-inning victory over the Yankees, walking one and striking out four over two scoreless innings of relief. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both bullpens were shaky in the late innings -- eight of the 16 runs scored on the night came in the seventh inning or later -- but Diaz was the notable exception, blanking the Yanks in the ninth and 10th frames to set the stage for Pete Alonso's walkoff blast. The right-hander seems to have finally gotten comfortable as a Met and may be rediscovering the form he flashed in 2018 as a Mariner. Since the beginning of August, Diaz has a 1.32 ERA and massive 29:6 K:BB over 13.2 innings. |
Aug 30 2020 | Diaz (1-1) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk while striking out zero over one inning as he was charged with the loss during Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had put together scoreless outings in nine of his past 10 outings, but he was charged with his third blown save of the season Sunday as he allowed a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. He remained in the game for the eighth inning but allowed a walkoff single. The right-hander now carries a 2.77 ERA as he's converted two of his five save opportunities this season. |
Aug 28 2020 | Diaz (leg) tossed one clean inning while striking out three as he earned the save during the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz left Wednesday's game while dealing with leg cramps, but he returned to the mound to pick up the save Friday. He should be available going forward as he now carries a 2.25 ERA over 12 innings this season. |
Aug 26 2020 | Diaz was removed from Wednesday's game against the Marlins with left leg cramps, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old exited the game after a visit from the athletic trainer, but the fact it's leg cramps is good news for the Mets. Diaz wanted to continue pitching, but manager Luis Rojas said the team didn't want to take any chances. The right-hander should be considered day-to-day, but he may not be sidelined for long, if at all. |
Aug 20 2020 | Diaz (1-0) walked a batter but struck out four while giving up no hits in 1.1 innings as the Mets took care of the Marlins 5-3 Wednesday evening. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was called upon to enter in the eighth inning after Dellin Betances found himself in a two-out bases-loaded jam. Although wild at times, Diaz had his stuff working Wednesday as he struck out Jonathan Villar to escape trouble in the eighth and then struck out the side in the ninth to seal the victory for the Mets. The 26-year-old righty has given up just one run while owning an impressive 19:2 K:BB through 8.1 innings since Aug. 2, and could start seeing save chances again with Seth Lugo moving back into the rotation. |
Aug 19 2020 | Diaz could operate as the Mets' closer with Seth Lugo moving to the starting rotation Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lugo converted three of his five save chances with a 2.61 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB this season, but the Mets want to see if he can translate that success into the rotation. Diaz allowed runs in two of his first three outings of the season to fall out of favor, but he's given up only one run and has a 19:2 K:BB in his past eight appearances (8.1 innings), including 1.1 scoreless frames to earn the win Wednesday against the Marlins. The Mets haven't made any official declarations regarding their plans for the ninth inning, but Diaz is the logical option given his pedigree and current form. |
Aug 13 2020 | Diaz allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning during Thursday's 8-2 win over the Nationals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It marked Diaz's sixth straight outing without allowing a run. Diaz's strong performance of late could lead to an increase in high-leverage innings for the right-hander going forward. That being said, he seems unlikely to take back the closer role any time soon with Seth Lugo currently having a firm grasp on the ninth inning. |
Aug 7 2020 | Diaz's last two appearances have come with the Mets trailing. He has three strikeouts while allowing zero hits and one walk in two scoreless frames over that span. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seth Lugo picked up the save Wednesday, and given Diaz's usage of late, it seems like Lugo is the guy to roster in that bullpen right now. There is no denying that Diaz has the stuff to close, but he also doesn't have the trust of manager Luis Rojas. |
Jul 30 2020 | Diaz struck out one batter while allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Red Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rojas said he was "definitely not concerned" with Diaz after he blew the save in Saturday's loss to the Braves, but that stance has clearly shifted after another rough outing Thursday. The mets skipper wasn't decisive in whether or not Diaz will keep his closer job. However, Rojas did say the Mets brass is going to discuss the reliever's usage in high-leverage situations moving forward, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Seth Lugo seems likely to take over the closing duties if the Mets do indeed decide to move away from Diaz in the ninth. |
Jul 25 2020 | Mets Manager Luis Rojas said he was "definitely not concerned" about Diaz after the reliever allowed a homer to Marcell Ozuna to blow the save in Saturday's loss to the Braves, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets wouldn't commit to a clear closer prior to the season, though Diaz was used in a save situation in both of the team's first two games. He got the job done in Friday's season opener but was beaten for the game-tying run Saturday, a potentially worrying sign given that he blew seven saves while struggling to a 5.59 ERA last season. One poor outing won't shake his manager's faith too much, but the Mets indicated they'd be willing to give ninth-inning opportunities to other pitchers before the season started and that presumably remains as true as ever following Saturday's loss. |
Jul 24 2020 | Diaz tossed one scoreless inning Friday as he picked up the save against the Braves. He allowed no hits and one walk while striking out two. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming out of camp, it was unclear who would be the top option for the ninth inning, but the Mets called on Diaz to preserve the one-run lead in Friday's contest. He allowed a walk with one out, but he struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the save in the season opener. While the right-hander should have less job security in 2020 after recording a career-worst 5.59 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with seven blown saves last season, his usage Friday suggests that he'll still be the top option for save chances to start the year. |
Jul 22 2020 | Diaz wants to close for the Mets this season but doesn't know whether or not he's the team's closer, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reports from earlier in camp suggested that the Mets' closer position had yet to be decided, and it seems as though that's still the case. Diaz had one of the most dominant closer seasons in recent memory for the Mariners in 2018, saving 57 games while posting a 1.96 ERA and a 44.3 percent strikeout rate, but his ERA exploded to 5.59 last year, his first with the Mets, as he blew seven save chances. The Mets have a handful of quality alternatives this season, as Dellin Betances, Jeurys Familia and Seth Lugo have saved a combined 169 games. |
Jul 5 2020 | Manager Luis Rojas declined to commit to Diaz as the team's closer Sunday and said, "I don't know yet. We'll get there at some point," Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rojas brought up Diaz, Dellin Betances, Seth Lugo and Jeurys Familia as potential options for the ninth inning, and he also floated the possibility of utilizing a committee approach. Diaz should remain the favorite given his pedigree and what the team gave up to acquire him, but his 2019 struggles (5.59 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while blowing seven of 33 save chances) are unlikely to be forgotten quickly. |
Mar 29 2020 | Diaz compiled a 6.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 1:0 K:BB through three innings before spring training was suspended. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the numbers weren't anything to write home about, Diaz's velocity was good and he at least kept the ball in the park -- something he had trouble doing in 2019, when he stumbled to a 2.33 HR/9 across 58 innings. The 26-year-old is only two years removed from being the most valuable closer in the game and will head into the season handling ninth-inning duties for the Mets, but Diaz will need to rediscover his command to return to elite status. |
Feb 27 2020 | Diaz gave up two runs on three hits in an inning of work Wednesday against the Astros, Mike Puma of The New York Post reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While his fastball was topping out at 98 mph, Diaz wasn't able to put it where he wanted within the strike zone -- the same issue that marred his 2019 campaign. "I felt good out there," he said through an interpreter after the outing. "A little bit anxious because it was the first time being out there in a real game and facing real batters, but other than that I felt really good." Diaz needed 25 pitches to escape the inning, so he at least got his work in, but the 25-year-old will need to tighten his command before Opening Day if he wants to avoid being on the hot seat as the Mets' closer right out of the gate. |
Jan 10 2020 | Diaz and the Mets avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.1 million deal Friday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz wasn't the player the Mets thought they traded for last season, as he struggled to a 5.59 ERA in 58 innings. His 39.0 percent strikeout remained excellent, however, and his 8.7 percent walk rate was only slightly worse than average. His big problem was the home run ball, as he gave up 2.3 HR/9, well above his 0.6 HR/9 mark from the season prior. He should still have the closing role heading into the upcoming season but won't have a particularly firm grasp on it should his struggles continue. |
Sep 28 2019 | Diaz earned the save Saturday against the Braves by recording two strikeouts and not allowing a baserunner during the ninth inning. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had a stretch of 15 appearances without a save as Seth Lugo took over as the primary closer -- though he blew two save chances in that stretch -- but Diaz now has the chance to end the season on a positive note after needing only 10 pitches Saturday. The 25-year-old has pitched two of the past three days and may have made his last outing of the season. Diaz's first season in New York has not gone according to plan with a 5.59 ERA and 1.38 WHIP while converting 26 of 33 save opportunities. |
Sep 3 2019 | Diaz (1-7) allowed two earned runs on two hits without recording an out to blow the save and take the loss Tuesday against the Nationals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was hardly the only contributor to the epic collapse of the Mets' bullpen in the ninth inning when they surrendered seven runs to the Nationals. However, the last five runs crossed the plate with him on the mound -- he entered the game with the bases loaded and up four runs -- capped by a three-run homer by Kurt Suzuki. Though he had put together scoreless outings in seven of his last eight appearances prior to Tuesday's outing, it's difficult to imagine the Mets turning to him in many save situations to conclude the season given Seth Lugo's superior effectiveness. |

Jul 25 2018 | Diaz (0-3) took the loss Tuesday, allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out two in one inning against the Giants. | Diaz was tasked with protecting a tie game to start the top of the ninth, but after allowing the game-winning run to get to second with two outs, he allowed the decisive run to score on an infield single and subsequent error by Dee Gordon. It's the first time he's allowed a run in 11 outings -- a string of appearances that goes back over a month -- so Tuesday's loss shouldn't be any cause for concern. |
Jul 21 2018 | Diaz got the save against the White Sox on Friday, logging a strikeout and walking one in a scoreless ninth inning to preserve Seattle's 3-1 victory. | The 24-year-old kept his superb season right on rolling with yet another scoreless appearance to tally his league-leading 37th save of the campaign. It was the continuation of what has been a truly ridiculous stretch for the flame-throwing All-Star, who has logged 18 saves in a row since he last blew an opportunity way back on June 1 against the Rays. |
Jul 11 2018 | Diaz locked down his 36th save with a perfect ninth Wednesday against the Angels. | Diaz struck out a batter for the fifth straight appearance and now has 79 in just 48 innings (14.8 K/9). The Mariners don't have the kind of offense that will blow teams out with regularity, so expect him to keep getting plenty of save chances as Seattle tries to make a push for the American League West crown in the second half. |
Jul 8 2018 | Diaz struck out all three batters he faced and picked up his 35th save in a 6-4 win over Colorado on Sunday. | Diaz is perfect over his last five outings, recording 10 strikeouts and five saves. The 24-year-old righty lowered his season ERA to 2.30 alongside a 78:13 K:BB in 47 innings. Diaz remains one of the strongest and most consistent closers in the league. |
Jul 5 2018 | Diaz struck out the side to record his 34th save of the season Thursday against the Angels. | Diaz has shown no signs of slowing down on his league-leading save pace, with Thursday already marking his third save in July. Despite the relatively heavy workload, he has remained dominant, allowing only two earned runs and seven baserunners with 17 strikeouts in his last 10 innings of work. |
Jul 4 2018 | Diaz struck out one in a perfect ninth inning against the Angels on Tuesday to earn his 33rd save of the season. | The 24-year-old is now 33-for-36 in save chances -- Diaz has eight more saves than anyone else in baseball -- and he's allowed just three runs since the end of May. It's not out of the question that Diaz could become just the second pitcher ever to reach 60 saves in a season. |
Jul 1 2018 | Diaz struck out the side to earn his 32nd save of the season Sunday against the Royals. | Diaz needed only 15 pitches to earn the save Sunday, his second in as many days. He is 32-for-35 in save opportunities this season and continues to lead the major leagues in saves by a wide margin, all while posting elite ratios. |
Jun 30 2018 | Diaz recorded a clean ninth inning to record the save Saturday against the Royals. | Diaz entered the game in the ninth inning with a two-run lead and had no trouble preserving it, needing just 11 pitches to retire the Royals in order. He now has 31 saves for the season, seven more than any other closer in the majors. |
Jun 27 2018 | Diaz allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless 11th inning Wednesday to pick up his 30th save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Orioles. | He's now seven saves clear of Aroldis Chapman and Craig Kimbrel for the major-league lead, and Diaz is only four shy of tying the career high he set in 2017. The 24-year-old continues to blossom into an elite closing option, boasting a 68:13 K:BB through 42 innings on the year to go with his sharp 2.57 ERA. |
Jun 26 2018 | Diaz notched his 28th save in a win over the Orioles on Monday, recording two strikeouts over a perfect ninth inning. | It took all of 12 pitches, nine of which found the strike zone, for Diaz to knife through the trio of Trey Mancini, Jonathan Schoop and Tim Beckham. The dominant outing represented a nice rebound for Diaz, who'd allowed a pair of earned runs on three hits over an inning to the Red Sox in his last appearance on Saturday. Factoring in Monday's line, the 24-year-old boasts nine saves and a sparkling 18:2 K:BB across 11.1 June innings. |
Jun 26 2018 | Diaz recorded his 29th save in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Orioles, allowing one hit with no strikeouts or walks during a scoreless ninth inning. | Diaz has notched a save during the first two games of the series in Baltimore, and hasn't allowed a run during his last 10 save opportunities. The 24-year-old has a 2.63 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with a 66:13 K:BB over 41 innings, and has converted 29-of-32 save chances thus far in 2018. |
Jun 16 2018 | Diaz struck out the side to record his 27th save of the season Saturday against the Red Sox. | Diaz wasted no time preserving the Mariners' 1-0 win, striking out Brock Holt, Jackie Bradley and Mookie Betts in order to win the game. He has now recorded eight consecutive scoreless appearances, during which he has managed 12 strikeouts across 8.1 innings. With 27 saves in 30 chances, Diaz outpaces Craig Kimbrel for the major-league lead in saves by five. |
Jun 16 2018 | Diaz worked around a hit and a walk, recording one strikeout in a clean ninth inning to bag his 26th save of the season in Seattle's 7-6 victory over the Red Sox on Friday. | The flame-throwing righty made it an interesting ninth inning by allowing a leadoff single to J.D. Martinez and walking Xander Bogaerts, but he was able to work out of the jam and induce an Eduardo Nunez groundout to end the game and bag his 26th save of the season. Diaz has been getting a ton of opportunities pitching for a Mariners team that seems intent on playing as many close games as possible, so as long as his teammates continue their taste for late-game theatrics, Diaz should continue to rack up saves at his league-leading pace. |
Jun 13 2018 | Diaz recorded his 25th save in Tuesday's win over the Angels, firing a scoreless ninth inning in which he recorded two strikeouts. | The workhorse closer took the mound for the fourth time in five days, but he was as sharp as he's been all season. Diaz came just one pitch short of getting all 10 of his offerings into the strike zone as he knifed through the trio of Martin Maldonado, Ian Kinsler and Mike Trout, notably retiring Trout on a swinging strikeout after he'd blasted a pair of home runs earlier. Manager Scott Servais would undoubtedly call on Diaz each and every time the Mariners held a ninth-inning lead if he could, but the presence of the recently acquired Alex Colome will give him flexibility as the season unfolds. As it is, Diaz's 36 innings through 36 appearances have him on pace to comfortably exceed the career-high 66 frames he logged across 66 outings in 2017. |
Jun 13 2018 | Diaz will be unavailable for Wednesday's game against the Angles after pitching four of the past five days, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. | In his place, Alex Colome will likely be utilized in the ninth inning should a save opportunity present itself. Look for Diaz to be available for Thursday's series opener against Boston. |
Jun 12 2018 | Diaz notched his 24th save by firing a scoreless ninth inning in which he recorded two strikeouts during Monday's win over the Angels. | The hard-throwing closer ripped through the trio of Luis Valbuena, Martin Maldonado and Ian Kinsler on a quick 11 pitches, eight of which he threw for strikes. Diaz had given up a pair of hits in each of his last two outings, so Monday's effort was a return to the type of dominant performance he's made the norm this season. The 24-year-old has been busy in the early going of June, already logging five saves, three of which have come over the last four days. |
Jun 10 2018 | Diaz worked around a pair of hits in a scoreless inning of work to earn his 23rd save of the season Sunday against the Rays. | Diaz certainly made things exciting in this one, allowing an infield single before a well-struck base hit brought the aforementioned runner toward the plate. Fortunately, he was thrown out at home to close out the one-run victory. Diaz has excelled once again this season, posting a 2.65 ERA and 0.91 WHIP to go along with his league-leading number of saves. |
Jun 8 2018 | Diaz pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the save Friday against the Rays, striking out two and walking zero while allowing two hits. | Diaz went more than one inning for just the second time this year, throwing 20 pitches (14 strikes) to record his MLB-leading 22nd save. Diaz is holding opponents to a .152 batting average while sporting a 54:12 K:BB in 33 innings. The Mariners' penchant for close games works in Diaz's favor as one of the preeminent closers in the game. |
Jun 3 2018 | Diaz got the save against the Rays on Sunday, striking out one without allowing any baserunners over a clean ninth inning to close out Seattle's 2-1 victory. | After blowing the save in the first game of the series against the Rays, Diaz has bounced back with consecutive drama-free efforts to pump his save total up to an American League-leading 21 on the season. His ballistic 52:12 K:BB and 0.85 WHIP over his 31.2 innings both support that number, and pitching for a Seattle team that has been winning a lot of close games bodes well for his prospects at continuing to see plenty of opportunities as the team's primary ninth-inning man. |
Jun 3 2018 | Diaz threw a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout against the Rays on Saturday en route to his 20th save of the season. | Diaz retired the side on 11 pitches, bouncing back from a couple poor performances in his last two outings, including a blown save Friday. With the year he's having (2.93 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 51:12 K:BB), Diaz can be forgiven for the occasional hiccup. |
Jun 2 2018 | Diaz blew the save against the Rays on Friday, giving up one earned run on two hits, striking out two and walking one in the ninth inning. | Diaz entered with a 3-2 lead to protect, but he ended up yielding the game-tying run after serving up an RBI single to Tampa Bay's Matt Duffy for his third blown save of the season in 22 opportunities, before he was eventually bailed out by a walk-off blast from Mitch Haniger. After looking unhittable to start the year, Diaz has shown some cracks lately as this outing brought his ERA up to 3.03. He's still having a fantastic season, however, as he's got 19 saves, a 0.91 WHIP and a 50:12 K:BB over his 29.2 innings. |
May 30 2018 | Manager Scott Servais said Diaz is unavailable for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. | Diaz will get the night off after pitching in five of the last seven games, with Servais confirming that the closer isn't dealing with any injury. The Mariners will likely turn to the newly acquired Alex Colome in the ninth inning should a save opportunity present itself. |
May 30 2018 | Diaz (0-2) allowed four runs on three hits and a walk while recording just one out -- a strikeout -- en route to taking the loss Tuesday against the Rangers. | It was a non-save situation, as Diaz entered in a tied 5-5 game in the ninth inning. He needed 25 pitches just to get the one out and was tagged for a couple singles and a double before coming out. The 24-year-old hadn't allowed a run in seven straight outings -- last giving up a run in a blown save against the Rangers -- but his ERA jumped up from 1.59 to 2.83 as a result of Tuesday's outing. |
May 29 2018 | Diaz worked around a walk in a scoreless inning Monday against Texas to pick up the save. | Diaz has struggled with control throughout his career, but this was just his first walk in his past 13 appearances. He has slashed his BB/9 from 4.4 to 3.2, and that's the biggest reason why Diaz owns career bests in ERA (1.59) and WHIP (0.71) to go with his 19 saves. |
May 26 2018 | Diaz struck out one in a clean ninth inning to earn the save Friday against the Twins. | Diaz got through Eddie Rosario, Miguel Sano and Eduardo Escobar to secure the win in a one-run ballgame. Diaz is now tied with Colorado's Wade Davis for the major-league lead in saves, as both are 18-for-20 in save chances. The young right-hander has gone his last three appearances without allowing a hit, and is holding opponents to a meager .105 batting average on the season. Diaz has recorded at least one strikeout in his last 10 consecutive appearances, and is sporting a 46:9 K:BB in 26.1 innings. |
May 24 2018 | Diaz struck out the side for his 17th save Wednesday against Oakland. | Diaz has now struck out the side a whopping six times. He owns an absurd 45 strikeouts in 25.1 innings, good for a 16.0 K/9 that trails only Josh Hader, Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances among all relievers. That's elite company, and with a 1.78 ERA and just two blown saves in 19 chances, Diaz has become one of the best closers in the game. |
May 23 2018 | Diaz notched his 16th save in Tuesday's extra-inning win over the Athletics, firing a scoreless 10th inning and recording two strikeouts. | Diaz fired 13 of 16 pitches for strikes in a dominant appearance during which he set down the trio of Mark Canha, Chad Pinder and Marcus Semien. The 24-year-old has now posted scoreless efforts in five of the last six trips to the mound, with a blown save on May 15 against the Rangers the one stumble during that stretch. |
May 21 2018 | Diaz fired a scoreless 10th inning in an extra-innings win over the Tigers on Sunday, allowing a hit while recording a strikeout. | Diaz got 14 of his 17 pitches into the strike zone while preserving a 2-2 tie, lowering his ERA to 1.93 in the process. The hard-throwing right-hander had bounced back nicely from his second blown save of the season by closing out Friday night's one-run win over the Tigers, and Sunday's effort represented his fourth scoreless appearance over the last five trips to the mound. |
May 18 2018 | Diaz got the save against the Tigers on Friday, working around one hit and recording one strikeout over a scoreless ninth inning to preserve Seattle's 5-4 victory. | Diaz was tagged with a blown save his last time out against the Rangers but the flame-throwing righty bounced back by protecting a one-run lead against the Tigers to lock down his American League-leading 15th save of the season. His 39:9 K:BB in 22.1 innings is the stuff of an elite closer and if the 24-year-old continues on his current pace he could wind up topping last season's total of 34 saves, provided he gets enough opportunities to do so. |
May 16 2018 | Diaz gave up one run on one hit in the ninth to blow the save Tuesday against the Rangers. He struck out one and walked zero. | Diaz allowed a single to Jurickson Profar to open the ninth, and a wild pitch soon put him on second base. After getting Nomar Mazara to pop out, Diaz got Joey Gallo to ground out sharply to first but Profar was able to score from second on the play. It was just the second blown save on the year for Diaz, and he still holds a superb 0.75 WHIP while holding opponents to a .099 batting average. He's struck out 38 batters in just 21.1 innings. |
May 15 2018 | Diaz struck out the side for his 14th save Monday night against the Twins. | Diaz struck out the side for the second outing in a row and the fifth time this season. He now has a whopping 37 strikeouts over 20.1 innings, good for a 16.4 K/9 that trails only Josh Hader, Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances this season. |
May 11 2018 | Diaz fired a perfect ninth inning in which he struck out the side to close out a win over the Blue Jays on Thursday. | Diaz's final line implies how locked in he was during his one frame, during which he fired 14 of 19 pitches for strikes and induced an impressive six swings and misses. It was a good confidence-boosting outing for the 24-year-old closer, who'd allowed a game-tying home run his last time on the mound against the Angels last Saturday. |
May 6 2018 | Diaz was charged with first blown save of the season in Saturday's extra-innings win over the Angels, allowing a two-out, game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning. | All was right in the Mariners' world through the first two-thirds of the top of the ninth, with Diaz seemingly on his way to yet another save after retiring Luis Valbuena and Ian Kinsler to open the frame. However, Mike Trout then laced a ground-rule double with two out, and Justin Upton subsequently tied up the contest with a 404-foot shot to center. Diaz has now run into trouble in two of his last three appearances, allowing a combined three earned runs in those outings. |
May 3 2018 | Diaz got the save against Oakland on Thursday, working around a hit and striking out one batter to lock down Seattle's 4-1 victory. | After giving up a home run and taking his first loss of the season the previous night, Diaz got back on track and bagged his league-leading 13th save of the season in this one. He's been utterly dominant this season with a 1.04 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP through 17.1 innings and he looks primed to remain one of the league's premier ninth-inning options throughout the year. |
May 3 2018 | Diaz (0-1) allowed a go-ahead solo home run over an inning in Wednesday's loss to the Athletics. | Brought on to preserve a 2-2 tie in the ninth, Diaz had a rare stumble, allowing a leadoff solo home run to Mark Canha that turned out to be the difference in the game. The normally reliable closer had only surrendered a run in one other outing this season prior to Wednesday, and the round tripper was the first he'd allowed. Now having worked a total of three innings over the last four days, Diaz may be unavailable for Thursday's series finale. |
May 2 2018 | Diaz recorded his 12th save in a win over the Athletics on Tuesday, allowing two walks and recording two strikeouts over a scoreless ninth inning. | Diaz had to work a bit more than usual, firing 22 pitches overall in the ninth. The normally sharp closer got only 12 of his offerings into the strike zone while issuing walks to Matt Olson and Mark Canha, the second coming with two out. However, Diaz was able to regroup and get a slider past Chad Pinder for a called third strike to end the game. The 24-year-old has given up a sole run all season, and he's now recorded multiple strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. |
Apr 26 2018 | Diaz struck out two and walked one in a scoreless inning of work to record his 11th save of the season. | Diaz labored a bit in this outing, walking one and needing 19 pitches to close out the win for the Mariners. However, he continues to be absolutely dynamic in the final frame as he remains perfect in converting save opportunities and maintains an ERA and WHIP well below 1.00 on the season. |
Apr 25 2018 | Diaz collected his 10th save of the season after striking out two in a scoreless inning against the White Sox on Wednesday. | Diaz collected his second save in as many days, making him the first pitcher this season to record double-digit saves. He has now notched two straight scoreless outings since conceding his first run of the season over the weekend. Diaz is now a perfect 10-for-10 on save chances this season and owns an elite 0.73 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB through 12.1 innings. |
Apr 24 2018 | Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday against the White Sox to secure his ninth save of the season. He struck out two. | Diaz posted a strong bounceback performance after walking three batters in his previous relief appearance on Saturday. The hard-throwing righty needed just 11 pitches to retire the side and preserve the Mariners' first shutout of the season. Diaz currently boasts a shiny 0.79 ERA over his first 11.1 innings of relief this season. |
Apr 21 2018 | Diaz gave up a run on one hit and three walks while striking out one in the ninth inning of Saturday's 9-7 win over the Rangers to pick up his eighth save of the season. | The run was the first he'd allowed all season. Diaz threw only 18 of 40 pitches for strikes, walking Joey Gallo and Shin-Soo Choo to load the bases with two outs before getting rookie Isiah Kiner-Falefa to fly out and end the game. The right-hander still has a strong 19:6 K:BB through 10 innings this year, but all six of those walks have come in his last five appearances -- given Diaz's 4.4 BB/9 in 2017, it's likely that more shaky outings lie ahead for the 24-year-old despite his dominance. |
Apr 17 2018 | Diaz worked around a walk with two strikeouts to pick up his seventh save Monday night against the Astros. | Diaz remains on fire this season, now with eight straight scoreless frames, each with at least one strikeout. Perhaps most remarkable, though, is that Diaz's walk Monday night was just his third of the season. Diaz walked 32 batters in just 66 innings last season, and that lack of control was the main thing keeping him out of the upper echelon of closers in 2017. |
Apr 14 2018 | Diaz allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to record the save Saturday against the Athletics. | Diaz allowed his first hit of the season Saturday but he had no problem recording his sixth of the season in as many opportunities. Everything in his profile is stellar and he is an elite closing option as a result. |
Apr 14 2018 | Diaz walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to collect his fifth save of the season in a 7-4 win over the A's. | The free pass was the first baserunner Diaz had allowed this season, and the right-hander sports a dominant 13:1 K:BB through six innings. If he can keep the walks under control -- something that isn't guaranteed after he posted a 4.4 BB/9 last year -- the 24-year-old could be about to emerge as one of the elite closing options in the league. |
Apr 11 2018 | Diaz struck out the side on 13 pitches in the ninth inning of an 8-3 win over the Royals on Tuesday. | The hard-throwing right-hander needed some work after having last having pitched on April 3, so manager Scott Servais deployed him in the low-leverage scenario. Diaz quickly mowed down Paulo Orlando, Alcides Escobar and Abraham Almonte on swinging strikeouts over his one frame, an extension of what has been a spectacular start to his season. Diaz has been nothing short of dominant thus far in 2018, firing four perfect innings in which he's racked up an 11:0 K:BB and successfully converted all three save opportunities. |
Apr 11 2018 | Diaz notched his fourth save of the season after striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Royals. | It took Diaz 17 pitches -- 12 of which were strikes -- to slam the door on the Royals. The electric 24-year-old continues to shine early in 2018; he's now a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities while keeping a shiny 12:0 K:BB through five scoreless innings. |
Apr 3 2018 | Diaz struck out two batters during a scoreless ninth inning to collect his third save of the season in Tuesday's 6-4 win over San Francisco. | Aside from hitting two batters in his season debut, Diaz has been flawless through three appearances. He hasn't allowed a hit or issued a traditional walk yet, and the hard-throwing righty has already racked up eight strikeouts through just three innings. It shouldn't have been overly surprising to see him slip slightly to begin last season, as he was fast-tracked to the majors without ever appearing at the Triple-A level. However, he converted 21 of 23 save opportunities in the second half last year and owns the pitching arsenal to dominate opposing hitters. Big things could be in store for Diaz in 2018. |
Apr 1 2018 | Diaz struck out the side to pick up his second save Sunday against Cleveland. | Diaz has struck out the side both times out this season. The electric fastball that helped him rack up 89 strikeouts in 66 innings last season hasn't gone anywhere. Diaz might be wild at times, but expect him to keep piling up the whiffs in 2018. |
Mar 29 2018 | Diaz hit two batters but struck out the side against the Indians on Thursday to earn his first save of the season. | He also committed a balk and allowed two stolen bases, but in the end, Diaz shut the door, as he did 34 times in 39 chances last season. The 24-year-old has really good stuff and will continue to get the ball in the ninth, but the Mariners are under a lot of pressure to win now and Diaz probably can't afford many hiccups this year. |
Mar 19 2018 | Diaz fired a scoreless seventh inning in Sunday's 16-3 Cactus League loss to the Indians. | The hard-throwing closer hit 97 mph on the gun during his outing, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com, and he looks to be on pace for the start of the regular season. Diaz has allowed just two hits over seven innings across seven appearances this spring, and he'll look to garner a level of consistency in 2018 that he couldn't quite muster last season. Although he racked up 34 saves over 66 appearances, Diaz also lost his closer's job for a period of time. Limiting the long ball would likely go a long way towards a steadier effort this season, as Diaz's 1.36 HR/9 in 2017 was his highest of any stop in his professional career. |
Feb 28 2018 | Diaz spent the offseason gaining a better understanding of his delivery in an effort to reduce the mechanical issues that hampered him last season, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. | A breakout 2016 campaign had the young reliever primed to be Seattle's closer heading into the 2017. However, first-half struggles and control problems led to him being demoted from ninth-inning duties for a portion of the season. He still finished with 34 saves and a respectable 3.27 ERA, but Diaz wants to prove he's for real this season. After the tumultuous 2017 campaign, he came into camp with some throwing sessions already under his belt and a new mentality on the mound. During an early bullpen session, Diaz noted "when I missed a couple pitches, I refocused my mind and made the adjustment." Diaz is lined up to be the Mariners' closer once again, and if he can make quick adjustments like this during the regular season, he could be even more dominant in his second full big-league season. |
Feb 22 2018 | Diaz has been working on adding a changeup to his arsenal during spring training, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. | Diaz notched an impressive 34 saves this past season but saw his walk rate (11.5 percent) and FIP (4.02) balloon from the year prior. The 23-year-old utilized a two-pitch arsenal -- including a fourseam fastball and slider -- but has reportedly been looking to add an off-speed pitch to his repertoire. General manager Jerry Dipoto recently stated that Diaz's first few bullpen sessions have been "electric" and that his command appears much improved thus far. Lowering his walk rate back into the single-digit range will go a long way towards cementing Diaz as on the the league's preeminent closers. |
Sep 30 2017 | Diaz struck out two batters over 1.1 innings and earned his 34th save of the year in Saturday's 6-4 victory over the Angels. | After blowing a save Friday, his first since July 22, Diaz had a strong performance and didn't allow a baserunner in the time it took him to close out Saturday's game. Having fanned 89 batters over 66 innings, Diaz has been a solid source of strikeouts this season. However, his lack of control has been an issue, as he's walked 32 batters and surrendered 10 home runs in that time as well. |
Sep 27 2017 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to notch his 33rd save of the season in a 6-3 win over the A's. | He's had his struggles this season, but Diaz now hasn't blown a save since late July, converting his last 15 opportunities. The 23-year-old's 12.0 K/9 this year is elite, but he'll need to improve on his 4.5 BB/9 and 1.4 HR/9 if he's going to take another step forward in 2018. |
Sep 21 2017 | Diaz fired a scoreless ninth inning in Wednesday's 8-6 loss to the Rangers, allowing one hit. | Manager Scott Servais opted to give Diaz some work after he'd last taken the mound Sept. 13. The 23-year-old right-hander has only had one hiccup this month, a Sept. 6 outing versus the Astros in which he surrendered two earned runs over an inning while taking his sixth loss ot the season. Diaz has largely fulfilled expectations overall in his first full-time campaign as closer, converting 32 of 36 save opportunities while racking up 84 strikeouts over 62.1 innings. |
Sep 9 2017 | Diaz gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to notch his 32nd save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Angels. | The young fireballer has been anything but consistent in his first full season as the Mariners' closer, but he's now converted 14 straight save opportunities over his last 18 appearances despite a 4.58 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 5.6 BB/9 during that stretch. Diaz's 11.2 K.9 in those 17.2 innings certainly helps, of course, but he'll need to sharpen his control considerably if he hopes to join the ranks of the league's elite closers next season. |
Sep 2 2017 | Diaz (3-5) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning against the A's on Saturday to earn his third win of the season. | The right-hander has turned in back-to-back scoreless frames in the first two games the series, easing concerns about his recent back issue. He earned the save Friday and is now 19-for-20 in save chances since the beginning of July. |
Sep 1 2017 | Diaz (back) notched his 31st save with a clean ninth inning in Friday's 3-2 win over the Athletics, recording one strikeout. | Diaz had been bothered by back spasms in recent days according to manager Scott Servais, but he appeared to be at full strength while disposing of Ryon Healy, Bruce Maxwell and Matt Chapman on 15 pitches. The 23-year-old has put together four straight scoreless appearances -- which have all resulted in saves -- after allowing three earned runs over 1.2 innings across two outings in mid-August. |
Aug 30 2017 | Manager Scott Servais said Diaz has been limited over the past couple of games due to back spasms, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. | This helps explain why Diaz wasn't used in back-to-back close games against the Orioles. He was apparently available in a limited capacity Wednesday, so the issue doesn't appear to be anything overly serious. With an off day Thursday, Diaz will likely be ready to go for the upcoming weekend series against the Athletics. |
Aug 25 2017 | Diaz pitched a scoreless inning while allowing a walk and striking out one to earn his 30th save Friday against the Yankees. | Diaz came on in the 11th inning to protect a one-run lead and saved his 12th straight contest since July 22. Although his ERA is a bit high for a closer at 3.54, it's a small price to pay for a closer with 30 saves. |
Aug 24 2017 | Diaz struck out three batters in 1.1 perfect innings to pick up his 29th save of the season in Wednesday's 9-6 win over the Braves. | The volatile closer appears to be back in top form again after staggering to a 12.46 ERA and 3:6 K:BB in his previous five appearances. The Mariners are only a game out of the second wild-card spot in the AL, so if Diaz runs into another rough patch down the stretch, the team may be forced to choose between developing their young fireballer and finding a more stable option to handle ninth-inning duty for their playoff push. |
Aug 21 2017 | Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to collect his 28th save of the season during Monday's win over Atlanta. | There have been periodic struggles all season for the young righty, but Diaz has now converted 10 consecutive saves and boasts a serviceable 3.67 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 12.0 K/9 for campaign. Considering the instability of the closer market, Diaz's strikeouts and saves carry plenty of fantasy value. |
Aug 19 2017 | Diaz allowed one run on one hit while striking out one across one inning to earn his 27th save Saturday against the Rays. | Despite giving up a solo homer to Logan Morrison, Diaz still earned the save, as he was protecting a two-run lead. Although his 3.74 ERA is a bit on the high side, his 27 saves make him a strong fantasy option. |
Aug 16 2017 | Diaz threw a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout against the Orioles on Tuesday en route to his 26th save of the season. | He retired the Orioles' Nos. 3-6 hitters in order on a total of 10 pitches (eight strikes). The nice, easy inning should ease any concerns there may have been after Diaz gave up three runs in a non-save situation his last time out. Diaz has been virtually untouchable lately while protecting a lead, allowing just one hit in his last seven save opportunities. |
Aug 16 2017 | Diaz was charged with two runs on three walks and two hit batters while recording two outs Wednesday before being replaced by Marc Rzepczynski in the ninth inning of a 7-6 win over the Orioles. | The right-hander was still credited with his second hold of the season after Rzepczynski struck out Chris Davis with the bases loaded to end things, but this was in no way a successful outing for Diaz. After cruising through the early part of August, the 23-year-old has lost his command again, walking three batters in two of his last three appearances. While the Mariners are still hoping he can settle into the closer role for the long term, Diaz's penchant for ugly collapses could make it tough for the team to keep handing him the ball with the game on the line. |
Aug 11 2017 | Diaz (2-5) gave up three earned runs on a hit and three walks in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Angels. | Asked to preserve a 3-3 tie coming into the ninth, Diaz got matters off on the wrong foot by issuing consecutive walks and eventually surrendering a bases-clearing double to Mike Trout. The 23-year-old had put together six straight scoreless appearances prior to Thursday and had already racked up five saves in his first five outings of August. Therefore, despite the stumble, his 69 strikeouts over 50.1 innings and 25-for-29 record in save opportunities continue to render him an elite closer option in any fantasy format. |
Aug 9 2017 | Diaz picked up a 10th-inning save Tuesday, navigating around a hit and a walk while striking out one Oakland hitter. | He's now posted five straight scoreless outings and 12 in his last 14, a span in which Diaz has a 1.29 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB. The young closer's recovered impressively after hitting a bit of a midseason lull, and he remains one of the league's top ninth-inning (or 10th-inning, in this case) options. |
Aug 9 2017 | Diaz walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 25th save of the season in a 6-3 win over the A's. | He's now reeled off six straight scoreless appearances, lowering his ERA to 2.90 on the season. Diaz has pitched in three of the last four days, so he may not be available Thursday if the Mariners have a lead to protect in the ninth inning as they begin a four-game set at home against the Angels. |
Aug 6 2017 | Diaz allowed one walk and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his 23rd save Sunday in Kansas City. | Diaz was the seventh reliever used by Seattle as a comfortable 7-0 lead turned into a nail-biting 8-7 win. The 23-year-old closer has been lights-out in his past four appearances, holding opponents without a hit while posting a 6:1 K:BB in four innings. |
Aug 4 2017 | Diaz saved his 22nd game in Friday's win over Kansas City with a perfect ninth inning. | Diaz struck out a batter and has recorded a strikeout in 38 of his 46 outings this season. The flamethrower has his ERA down to 3.09 and has blown just two saves since May 2. |
Aug 2 2017 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to pick up his 21st save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Rangers. | The 23-year-old has looked more like his dominant 2016 self since the All-Star break, posting a 1.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB in his last 10 innings. Diaz has the raw stuff to emerge as one of the league's elite closers if he can just add some consistency to his profile. |
Jul 31 2017 | Diaz recorded two strikeouts during a scoreless ninth inning to collect his 20th save of the season during Monday's win over Texas. | Diaz has endured some growing pains through his first full season in the majors, but he's maintained a stranglehold on the closer job and continues pile up strikeouts in bunches. Diaz is turning in rock-solid fantasy numbers with a 3.22 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 12.5 K/9 for the campaign. |
Jul 29 2017 | Diaz allowed one run on two hits while striking out one over one inning to earn his 19th save Saturday against the Mets. | Fortunately, Diaz was protecting a two-run lead, so the run he allowed didn't cost him a blown save. Despite already blowing five saves on the year, his 3.30 ERA and ability to collect saves makes him a valuable fantasy option. |
Jul 26 2017 | Diaz fired a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Red Sox, allowing a hit and a walk. | The young closer had a different role than usual Tuesday, as he was asked to preserve a 4-4 tie. Diaz succeeded while disposing of Xander Bogaerts, Mitch Moreland and Mookie Betts, working around a Christian Vazquez single and Rafael Devers walk. It was a positive outing overall for Diaz, who'd blown a save against the Yankees last Saturday in his most recent appearance. Despite that stumble, he's enjoyed a strong July overall, compiling a 1.54 ERA and six saves over 11.2 innings across 11 appearances. |
Jul 22 2017 | Diaz gave up a run on one hit and a walk Saturday against the Yankees, suffering his fourth blown save of the season. | This was on Diaz, as he had the advantage on Ronald Torreyes in a 1-2 count and got a lot of the plate on a pitch that ended up driving in Jacoby Ellsbury from second base. That said, prior this blown save, Diaz had been pitching at an elite level, giving up one run while striking out 17 over his last 9.2 innings, so the ninth inning role should remain his going forward. |
Jul 20 2017 | Diaz will not be available out of the bullpen for Thursday's series opener against the Yankees, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. | The hard-throwing righty has pitched five of the last six days, so manager Scott Servais will give him the night off Thursday. The recently acquired David Phelps will not report to the team until Friday, so Tony Zych or Steve Cishek would be the primary closing options should a save situation arise. |
Jul 19 2017 | Diaz collected his 18th save of the season Wednesday against the Astros by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. | The young closer did issue a free pass to Alex Bregman with two outs to make things a little interesting, but he slammed the door by fanning Josh Reddick to end the contest. Diaz now owns a 3.10 ERA and a 12.8 K/9 on the season after converting his fifth save in six games. |
Jul 18 2017 | Diaz sent the Astros down in order while notching a pair of strikeouts en route to his 17th save Monday. | Diaz was called upon in the bottom of the 10th inning for the second consecutive game and once again delivered a perfect frame. He has pitched five consecutive scoreless appearances while recording 11 of 15 outs in that stretch via strikeout. |
Jul 18 2017 | Diaz will be unavailable for Tuesday's game against the Astros after pitching in four consecutive games, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. | Diaz's owners can hardly complain, as he has provided four saves and nine strikeouts without allowing a run in four days -- a truly rare feat for a closer in today's game. Nick Vincent is also unavailable. Tony Zych, Steve Cishek and James Pazos could all be options if a save situation arises. |
Jul 16 2017 | Diaz struck out the side in a perfect 10th inning to secure a 7-6 victory over the White Sox for his 16th save Sunday. | Diaz shut the door emphatically after Nelson Cruz broke a 6-6 tie with a home run in the top of the frame, needing just 12 pitches to punch out the heart of Chicago's order. The 23-year-old righty has electric stuff, as evidenced by his 12.80 K/9. |
Jul 15 2017 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Friday to notch his 14th save of the season in a 4-2 win over the White Sox. | While it's been an up-and-down campaign for the young closer, things are mostly trending up at the moment for Diaz, who's struck out at least one batter in 13 straight games while posting a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB in 13.1 innings over that stretch. |
Jul 10 2017 | Diaz fired a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Athletics, recording a pair of strikeouts. | The young closer took the loss in Saturday's contest but righted the ship Sunday with a crisp 15-pitch frame. Diaz endured his share of struggles at various points in the first half of the season, but manager Scott Servais appears committed to letting him work through his periodic difficulties. Diaz heads into the All-Star break having notched 13 saves in 16 opportunities while compiling a 3.53 ERA and an impressive 48 strikeouts in 35.2 innings. |
Jul 8 2017 | Diaz (2-4) took the Mariners' loss Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and an intentional walk. He struck out one. | Diaz got into trouble in the top of the ninth, with the score tied, with a leadoff single and a stolen base. He then intentionally walked Yonder Alonso before allowing a ground-rule double to Ryon Healy, which proved to be the decisive blow. Diaz has had ups and downs as Mariners closer but had just worked back into Scott Servais' favor. Since this wasn't a save opportunity, perhaps that'll help his job security as the top option. |
Jul 6 2017 | Diaz entered in a non-save situation and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in Wednesday's loss to Kansas City. | The 23-year-old stranded a pair of inherited runners to keep the game tied 6-6 in the eighth inning, and followed with a scoreless ninth inning. The right-hander has flourished in similar non-save situations this season, but has struggled mightily with a 5.63 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 16 save opportunities. Diaz is 13 of 16 in save chances and has a 12.0 K/9, but has already allowed eight home runs this season. |
Jul 3 2017 | Diaz pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to notch his 13th save of the season during Sunday's win over the Angels. | The closer had surrendered three home runs and seven total runs (albeit only three were earned) through his previous three outings, so Sunday's smooth appearance was a strong rebound. Diaz has the pitch arsenal to dominant, but he also has been extremely inconsistent this season, and it's worth reminding that the 23-year-old righty skipped the Triple-A level entirely last season when he joined the Mariners in June. |
Jun 28 2017 | Diaz was charged with four unearned runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning against the Phillies on Tuesday. | While the runs go as unearned, it was Diaz's own throwing error that extended the inning. Manager Scott Servais did not hide his displeasure with Diaz's performance in what was a non-save situation, telling the Tacoma News Tribune, "[Diaz] had not been out there in five days. But he's got to realize, I've got to get him in the game. We've got to try to keep him sharp. You've got to have your edge with you." The 23-year-old Diaz has been good in save situations, converting five straight opportunities since his temporary demotion in mid-May. |
Jun 28 2017 | Diaz (2-3) pitched 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk with one strikeout in Wednesday's loss to Philadelphia. | Diaz had his second straight awful outing against the Phillies, allowing two runs and blowing his third save of the year. He has now allowed a home run in three straight games, and his ERA has risen to 3.77. Manager Scott Servais was not pleased with his performance on Tuesday in a non-save situation, so this will probably not help. Diaz briefly lost his job in mid-May, so his hold on the closer role could become tentative if he doesn't turn things around quickly. It's a situation to monitor closely. |
Jun 21 2017 | Diaz gave up a solo homer and a single in the ninth inning Wednesday against Detroit, which was good enough for his 12th save. | Thanks to the Mariners' three-run lead, Diaz was able to be aggressive and shake off the solo homer Ian Kinsler hit off him. Having given up only two runs with an 18:4 K:BB over his last 14.1 innings, Diaz looks safe in the closer role for Seattle. |
Jun 20 2017 | Diaz fired a scoreless ninth inning in Monday's 6-2 win over the Tigers, issuing a walk and recording a strikeout. | The hard-throwing 23-year-old has now been deployed in non-save scenarios in back-to-back games, firing a scoreless inning in each. Manager Scott Servais seems intent in affording Diaz consistent work, with the goal of avoiding some of the inconsistency that plagued him earlier in the season and brought about a temporary demotion from the closer's role. |
Jun 14 2017 | Diaz worked around a hit and a walk while striking out two for his 11th save in Wednesday's 6-4 win over Minnesota. | Since being handed his closing job back, Diaz has recorded four saves without a hitch. It looks like his patch of struggles in May was just a fluke; it looks like we're once again free to trust that Diaz will retain the ninth-inning role for the duration of the season. |
Jun 9 2017 | Diaz threw a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts and allowed no base runners to record his 10th save in Friday's win over Toronto. | Diaz briefly lost the closer role in May, but has bounced back and looks locked in again as Seattle's stopper. In his last eight appearances, Diaz has converted all three save chances and allowed one run in nine innings with ten strikeouts and two walks. |
May 30 2017 | Diaz notched his ninth save in Monday's 6-5 win over the Rockies, recording two strikeouts over a scoreless ninth inning. | Diaz was impressive for his second consecutive save opportunity, setting down Gerardo Parra, Trevor Story and Tony Wolters on 11 pitches. The young closer has now rattled off five straight scoreless outings and owns a 7:2 K:BB over the six innings encompassing those appearances. |
May 29 2017 | Diaz fired a scoreless ninth inning in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Red Sox, recording two strikeouts. | The 23-year-old right-hander fired 13 of 17 pitches for strikes while setting down Dustin Pedroia, Andrew Benintendi and Hanley Ramirez. He impressively worked around two throwing errors by Kyle Seager and Jean Segura that saddled him with a pair of base runners, posting his fourth straight scoreless outing in the process. Diaz has regained the closer's role for the time being, and he should be able to easily hold on to it if he continues to turn in the caliber of performances he's recently mustered. |
May 25 2017 | Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record his eighth save of the season during Thursday's win over Washington. | It's probably safe to assume the Seattle brass wants Diaz to succeed as the closer, and he's now pitched four consecutive scoreless innings over his past three outings. Considering the hard-throwing righty is a converted starter and skipped the Triple-A level entirely last season, it shouldn't be surprising that there have been some struggles. His current form is encouraging, and Diaz's fantasy upside remains high. |
May 25 2017 | Diaz fired a scoreless seventh inning in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Nationals, issuing two walks and recording a strikeout. | The young reliever put together his second straight scoreless outing since being jettisoned from the closer's role, although Wednesday's performance featured some of the control problems that derailed the May 15 appearance which led to his demotion. Diaz had only issued five walks over 10.1 innings in April, but has already handed out seven free passes in 8.1 frames across nine May appearances. Following his previous outing on May 19, manager Scott Servais had previously hinted that he would re-evaluate the 23-year-old's suitability for the closer's role after his next appearance; therefore, it remains to be seen if Wednesday's effort was enough to vault Diaz back into the ninth-inning job. |
May 20 2017 | Diaz could return to his role as Seattle's closer in the near future, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. | Diaz pitched two shutout frames in Friday's loss to the White Sox, striking out two and allowing two hits. Although manager Scott Servais didn't pinpoint when Diaz would be reinstated as the team's closer, it appears that a lot is riding on his next outing, as Servais went on to say, "We'll take one more good one and see where we're at." Before he was removed from his role as the Mariners' closer, Diaz had blown two of his nine save opportunities. |
May 17 2017 | Diaz is likely to be deployed in a multi-inning, low-leverage scenario the next time he takes the mound, Bob Dutton of The News Tribune reports. "I'd like to get him out there and let him go a couple of innings," manager Scott Servais said. "As a pitcher, that's when you have a chance to work on things. You can go out there for an inning and not get into your pitches or get a feel for what you're doing." | The young reliever was demoted from the closer's role after a disastrous outing Monday, and Servais wants to make sure he's able to get enough throws in to work out any kinks his next time out. Diaz's control has been one of his main problems, as his BB/9 has shot up from last season's 2.61 to 5.87 over 15.2 innings in 2017. |
May 16 2017 | Diaz allowed two runs on no hits while walking four to earn a hold in one-third of an inning in Monday's 6-5 win over the A's. | A day after giving up a walk-off homer to Kevin Pillar in the bottom of the ninth in a tie ballgame, Diaz was much sloppier in this one. The hard-throwing righty walked four of the five batters he faced to force in a run and was removed in favor of Tony Zych, who induced a run-scoring groundout from Khris Davis before striking out Adam Rosales looking to end it. Diaz's inexperience is showing through with his 5.28 ERA, although he's striking out a cool 11.7 per nine innings. While there's no indication yet that Diaz's job may be in jeopardy, the M's have more options now that Steve Cishek (hip) returned from the disabled list Monday. |
May 16 2017 | Diaz was removed from his position as the Mariners' closer Tuesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. | Although he has seven saves, the 23-year-old has been anything but tidy in his appearances this season, posting a 5.28 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP in 15.1 innings pitched. After two straight messy outings, manager Scott Servais opted to give Diaz a break from the role in order to work on his mechanics in lower-leverage situations. No clear frontrunner for saves has been revealed at this time, although Nick Vincent, Steve Cishek, Marc Rzepczynski and Tony Zych seem like candidates to fill the void for the time being. |
May 14 2017 | Diaz (1-2) allowed a walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning during Sunday's loss to Toronto. | It was the fourth homer of the season allowed by Diaz, and his 2.4 HR/9 is a real eyesore. Remember that the converted starter went straight from Double-A to the majors last year, so while Diaz's debut was spectacular last season, his inexperience could be catching up to him. His 12.0 K/9 is still an admirable mark, and until there are sincere rumblings that his closer job is in jeopardy, it's probably worth taking the good with the bad in hopes that Diaz rights the ship. |
May 9 2017 | Diaz struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the year in Tuesday's 10-9 win over Philadelphia. | The 23-year-old lowered his ERA to 3.77 and has now converted his third straight save opportunity after blowing a save on May 2. Diaz continues to be a solid fantasy option when looking for saves, especially with a 12.5 K/9. |
May 7 2017 | Diaz struck out two in a clean ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the year in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Rangers. | Diaz has now secured six of his eight save chances this season and lowered his ERA to 4.05 in the process. Things have been a little shaky for the hard-throwing right-hander, but fantasy owners can't complain about his 12.8 K/9. Diaz is in no danger of losing the closing role anytime soon and is a fine ninth-inning option. |
May 4 2017 | Diaz struck out the side in the ninth inning but also surrendered a solo home run to Kole Calhoun to pick up his fifth save of the season in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Angels. | Calhoun seems to have his number, homering off Diaz in consecutive games, but after hitting Mike Trout with a pitch immediately after serving up the tater the 23-year-old was able to buckle down and strike out Albert Pujols to end the game. While Diaz has had a bumpy beginning to the season, nine of his last 11 outs have come via strikeout and he showed what he was capable of in 2016. He could be a buy-low candidate if his 4.76 ERA and 1.32 WHIP have his current GM nervous. |
May 3 2017 | Diaz gave up a solo home run to Kole Calhoun in the eighth inning Tuesday to blow his second save of the season in an extra-inning loss to the Angels. | The 23-year-old has been unable to build up any momentum in his first full season as the Mariners' closer, and his K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 have all taken a big step back from his 2016 performance. Diaz still has an electric 97 mph fastball, but he doesn't seem quite ready to join the ranks of the game's elite relievers. |
Apr 29 2017 | Diaz recorded his fourth save of the season in Friday's 3-1 win over the Indians, notching three strikeouts over a scoreless 1.1 innings. | Manager Scott Servais recently alluded to the fact that Diaz could see some outside-the-box usage for a closer, namely, some multi-inning work when he deemed necessary. Such a situation cropped up Friday, as the young right-hander set down Edwin Encarnacion with two outs in the eighth and Francisco Lindor on second. He then impressively retired the dangerous trio of Jose Ramirez, Jason Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall in the ninth, giving him his second save in as many nights. |
Apr 28 2017 | Diaz notched his third save of the season in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Tigers, giving up a hit and recording two strikeouts. | The young closer fired nine of 11 pitches for strikes while disposing of Justin Upton, Alex Avila and James McCann. Diaz worked around a pinch-hit single by Andrew Romine to post his third straight scoreless one-inning appearance. The 23-year-old has now racked up nine strikeouts over 8.2 innings and has lowered his ERA from 6.35 to 4.15 over his last three trips to the mound. |
Apr 25 2017 | Diaz, who remains the Mariners' designated closer, could see more multi-inning work as the season unfolds as per manager Scott Servais, Bob Dutton of The News Tribune reports. "He might go five outs. He might go six outs. In a road game, don't be shocked if he comes in there in the eighth inning of a tie game. I know it's not the traditional closer role, but that kind of how I see using him." | The Mariners' early-season offensive struggles have played a large part in Diaz being limited to just six appearances thus far, with Servais finally working his 23-year-old closer into a non-save situation Saturday after six days of inactivity. That could be more of the norm going forward, as the young reliever could even find himself in high-leverage, pre-ninth-inning situations, which would likely result in another pitcher getting the save opportunity. Servais emphasizes that the primary motivation for such a strategy is not statistical in nature, but rather, simply getting a promising young pitcher consistent and sufficient reps. "He's not the 29-, 30-year-old seasoned closer," Servais said. "He's 23. When he sits down there for four or five days, it's hard to go out there and be on top of your game." |
Apr 23 2017 | Diaz pitched a scoreless eighth in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Athletics, issuing a walk. | The closer got some work in despite the non-save scenario, with manager Scott Servais option to deploy him after he hadn't seen any work since April 16. With the Mariners' offense underperforming overall thus far this season, save opportunities have been at a premium for Diaz, who's made six appearances and is 2-for-3 in save chances while also notching a win. |
Apr 17 2017 | Diaz allowed a solo home run in the ninth inning but was bailed out by his offense in the bottom half of the frame to earn his first win Sunday against Texas. | After a dominant 2016 campaign that saw Diaz climb from Double-A all the way to the Seattle closing gig, Diaz has stumbled a bit to start 2017. His strikeout-to-walk percentage is down from 5.87 last year to 2.33 this season, which is worth watching over the coming weeks. However, there are no velocity concerns, and he's collected two saves and a win already. If anything, this might be a potential buy-low spot for the strikeout artist. |
Apr 14 2017 | Diaz worked around a hit with a pair of strikeouts to record his second save of the season Friday against the Rangers. | Diaz entered a one-run game and whiffed the first two batters he faced before allowing a single to Elvis Andrus. Andrus advanced to third after a wild pitch bounced off the plate and went all the way to the backstop, but Diaz then induced a weak grounder to end the game. The flamethrower allowed three runs in a meltdown that resulted in a blown save the last time out, but this was a strong bounce-back performance. |
Apr 9 2017 | Diaz allowed three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one in two-thirds of an inning for the blown save and loss against the Angels on Sunday. | It was a full bullpen meltdown for Seattle in this one, as they allowed the Angels to score seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the comeback win and sweep of the three-game series. Diaz has electric stuff and should have a long leash as Seattle's ninth-inning guy, so don't read too much into his first blown save of 2017. |
Apr 6 2017 | Diaz fired two scoreless innings in Wednesday's 5-3 extra-inning loss to the Astros, giving up a hit and a walk while also recording two strikeouts. | The Mariners closer came on for the ninth and 10th innings, successfully preserving a 2-2 tie. The outing was Diaz's first of the season, as the Mariners had trailed in the late innings in the first two games of the series. The 27-year-old will be counted on to build on his impressive 18-save 2016 major-league debut, but with Seattle's offense generating a total of four runs in the first three games of the season, he's yet to have the opportunity. |

Apr 6 2017 | Diaz picked up the save Thursday, fanning two in a perfect ninth inning. | The Mariners' poor offensive showing in the first few games left Diaz largely out of work, but after a ninth-inning rally put Seattle ahead heading into the bottom half of the inning, it was finally the 23-year-old's time to close the game out. He looked sharp in the outing, firing 12 of his 17 offerings for strikes and not giving Houston a sniff of hope for a comeback. Diaz appears to be picking up right where he left off last season, and should continue to be a staple in the Mariners' ninth this season. |
Mar 27 2017 | Diaz notched a pair of strikeouts and allowed a hit over one inning in Sunday's 7-6 Cactus League win over the Reds. | The young closer preserved the 7-5 lead in the eighth and looked as effective as usual. Diaz was 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA and a pair of saves over 5.1 innings across four appearances for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, so he was the beneficiary of regular work while away from the team. Sunday marked Diaz's first appearance since returning from the tournament and he's yet to give up an earned run or issue a walk over three spring innings. |
Mar 21 2017 | Diaz earned the win in Team Puerto Rico's 4-3 victory Monday over Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic by giving up just one walk over two scoreless innings and striking out three. | Diaz entered the game in the top of 10th and charged with preserving a 3-3 tie for Team Puerto Rico. He promptly struck out the side, which included getting both Jurickson Profar and Jonathan Schoop swinging. He then induced Curt Smith into an inning-ending double play to wrap up his second and final frame in the 11th. Diaz earned his first victory in WBC play in the bottom half of the inning when Eddie Rosario's sacrifice fly drove in Carlos Correa. |
Mar 16 2017 | Diaz, the Mariners' projected closer, earned a save by firing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball in Team Puerto Rico's 3-1 World Baseball Classic victory over defending champion Team Dominican Republic on Tuesday. | Diaz came on with two out and a man on in the eighth and got out of the inning when Nelson Cruz was gunned down trying to steal second. His work in the ninth was considerably impressive, considering he got Adrian Beltre swinging and Wellington Castillo on an infield pop-up before nailing down the save by getting new Mariners teammate Jean Segura looking. Diaz is expected to have ample opportunity to rack up saves after successfully converting 18 of 21 such opportunities as a rookie in 2016. |
Feb 10 2017 | Diaz will pitch for Team Puerto Rico in this year's World Baseball Classic, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. | The 22-year-old right-hander heads into the 2017 campaign as the Mariners closer after tallying 18 saves in 21 chances last season, along with an 88:15 K:BB and 2.79 ERA over 49 appearances. Diaz will join a Team Puerto Rico pitching staff that includes Twins hurlers Hector Santiago and Jose Berrios and the Mets' Seth Lugo. |
Dec 8 2016 | Mariners manager Scott Servais hinted that he's unlikely to vary the role of Diaz in 2017 to mimic the way the Indians utilized Andrew Miller in the 2016 postseason, the Tacoma News Tribune reports. | Servais cited days off in the postseason schedule as part of the reason that tactic is more effective during that playoffs than it would be during the regular season. Diaz will open the 2017 season as the Mariners' closer, with the potential to emerge as one of the best ninth-inning options in the game after he ripped off 18 saves in 21 chances as a rookie last season with an impressive 88:15 K:BB (51.2 innings). |
Sep 30 2016 | Diaz gave up three hits and a run but eventually earned his 18th save by striking out the side in the ninth inning Thursday to beat the A's, 3-2. | Diaz has hit some rough waters lately, blowing two of his last four save opportunities. He's allowed eight hits and four runs in that span but has struck out eight with no walks. His K:BB this season is 85:15. |
Sep 26 2016 | Diaz struck out one in a spotless ninth inning to earn his 17th save of the season Sunday versus the White Sox. | Working on four days of rest, Diaz looked fresh Sunday as he retired the side in order on just 10 pitches. It was positive to see the rookie bounce back after blowing his previous save opportunity, and when taking into account his 2.28 ERA and 1.08 WHIP, he continues to display the traits that should make him Seattle's undisputed closer heading into the 2017 season. |
Sep 26 2016 | Diaz gave up two runs on four hits to blow his third save Monday against Houston. | Diaz was 17-for-19 in save opportunities with a 2.82 ERA in his first 22.1 innings as closer with an eye-popping 32 strikeouts. This marks the first time all season Diaz has allowed more than three hits in an inning, and given his blazing fastball, it's not something we should get accustomed to. Expect Diaz to continue as Seattle's closer throughout the regular season and into the playoffs should the Mariners qualify. |
Sep 11 2016 | Diaz struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday against the A's to earn his 15th save. | Diaz had little trouble protecting Seattle's 3-2 lead, bookending his outing with a pair of called strikeouts. The 22-year-old rookie has emerged as one of baseball's most reliable closers since taking over ninth-inning duties at the beginning of August, converting 15 of 16 save opportunities. He has a 2.30 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 15.9 K/9 rate in 43 innings. |
Sep 8 2016 | Diaz struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Thursday against the Rangers for his 13th save. | Diaz had a few rocky outings in August, but he's stabilized things in September so far and has still blown only one save chance since taking over the ninth in Seattle. His fantasy owners have also enjoyed a huge pile of strikeouts -- 73 in 41 innings, good for a 16.02 K/9 that leads all pitchers who've thrown more than 10 innings this year. |
Sep 3 2016 | Diaz retired the only batter he faced to earn his 12th save of the season Friday versus the Angels. | The Angels made a late push, as they narrowed Seattle's lead to three runs and brought Mike Trout to the plate as the tying run, but Diaz induced a harmless fly ball to center after a seven-pitch at-bat. This was a positive sign, as Dias blew his first save of the season last time out and had allowed five runs in his previous 5.2 innings, so he appears to have a steady grasp on the closer's role at the moment. |
Aug 31 2016 | Diaz gave up a two-run homer in the ninth inning Tuesday at Texas for his first blown since taking over the closer job in early August. | Diaz pitched the eighth inning before heading out for the ninth. He walked two in the eighth, needing 24 pitches to get through the inning. Manager Scott Servais had no hesitation about going back to his best reliever an inning later in a one-run game. But Diaz left a 97 mph fastball over the plate that was crushed for the game winner. The plan was to use Steve Cishek for two innings in the seventh and eighth before Diaz in the ninth, but Cishek blew up in the seventh, which scuttled those plans. So, Servais needed two innings out of Diaz. |
Aug 26 2016 | Diaz recorded a five-out save Friday for his 11th of the season in a 3-1 win at the White Sox. | Diaz showed none of the problems he had in his previous few outings with mechanics and control, needing 17 pitches to close it out. He entered with the bases loaded in the eighth and was out of the jam in four pitches. He then struck out the side in the ninth. It's also encouraging that manager Scott Servais turned to his best reliever in the highest leverage situation even though it wasn't the ninth inning (though part of it was because of a thin and overworked bullpen). |
Aug 23 2016 | Diaz saved his 10th game despite allowing a hit and a walk in Monday's game against the Yankees. | Diaz has been playing with fire in his last three outings, as he has allowed three runs on five hits and five walks but has managed to escape with saves all three times. His amazing stuff, headlind by a 97.1 mph average fastball, gives him lots of room for error, though. Diaz struck out a batter Monday, giving him an amazing 66 strikeouts in just 36 innings. |
Aug 20 2016 | Diaz struggled for the second outing in a row Friday, but still posted his ninth save in as many chances, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts against the Brewers. | Diaz walked the leadoff batter, struck out two, walked two more and then allowed a two-run single to make it a one-run game. But he came back to strike out the final batter to end the threat. In Wednesday's save, he allowed a run on three hits. Diaz said afterward that he had trouble with his arm slot on his fastball, which led to the control problems. Although he's wobbled lately, it's at least a good sign that he hasn't imploded. |
Aug 18 2016 | Diaz notched his eighth save Wednesday against the Angels, but not before allowing a run on three hits and a walk. He struck out two. | To be fair, all three hits were singles and the walk to Albert Pujols was intentional; after he loaded the bases with one out following that base on balls, Diaz got a strikeout and a grounder to end the threat. This may have been the rookie's worst outing of the year, which just goes to show you how amazing he's been -- a 1.85 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 34 innings will certainly get the job done in fantasy and reality alike. |
Aug 16 2016 | Diaz tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save Monday against the Angels. | Diaz has allowed just one run in eight innings and is now a perfect 7-for-7. He struck out another batter Monday night to raise his total to 11 against just one walk since taking over as closer. Diaz and his blazing 97.1 mph average fastball look perfectly capable of handling the closer's role so far. |
Aug 8 2016 | Diaz nailed his fifth save with a perfect inning, but once again failed to strike out a single hitter Monday against the Tigers. | That's two straight strikeout-free outings for the rookie, but his astronomical 16.8 K/9 suggests there's no reason to panic in that regard. Diaz has taken the closer job and run with it since taking over for Steve Cishek, going a perfect 5-for-5 in save opportunities. |
Aug 7 2016 | Diaz saved his fourth game in as many chances Saturday, though he did not record a strikeout for the first time as a closer. | It was just the fourth time in 28 appearances this season that Diaz went without a strikeout and second time when he pitched at least an inning. After a popout, he induced a double-play grounder to end it. His K/9 "fell" to 17.38 and his K% to 45.2. |
Aug 6 2016 | Diaz collected his third save of the season in Friday night's 6-4 win over the Angels. | The hard-throwing righty flew through the heart of the order -- striking out Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Andrelton Simmons -- all on 14 pitches. With 56 strikeouts in 28 innings, Diaz is lighting up batters with a baronial 18 K/9 and is now 3-for-3 in save opportunities since taking over ninth-inning duties. |
Aug 2 2016 | Diaz will replace Steve Cishek as the Mariners' closer moving forward, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. | Cishek has struggled trying to close out games of late, so manager Scott Servais decided it was time for a change at the back end of the bullpen, and will go with Diaz next time the Mariners need to lock up a win. Diaz has appeared in just 24 big-league games, but owns an eye-popping 17.6 K/9 rate and has allowed just five earned runs over that span, so he could close the rest of the way if he proves the ninth-inning role isn't too big for him. |
Aug 2 2016 | Diaz picked up his first save as he locked down a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts Tuesday against the Red Sox. | Diaz's excellent 1.80 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 25 innings earned him the closer's role in the wake of Steve Cishek's troubles, and he looked great in his first appearance in the job. The only blemish was a walk, and the Red Sox swung and missed at five of his 18 pitches as he worked around the free pass with ease. Diaz's stuff is electric, and it's easy to see why the Mariners were willing to promote him to closer. |
