Apr 18 2024Story (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move was strictly procedural, as Story has already been ruled out for the rest of the 2024 season. The transaction opened a 40-man roster spot for the newly acquired Vladimir Gutierrez.
Apr 9 2024Story will undergo season-ending surgery Friday to repair a fractured glenoid in his left shoulder, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story suffered that injury as well as a subluxation when he landed awkwardly after attempting a diving stop on a grounder during a game Friday. The recovery timetable for the surgery is six months, which will end Story's 2024 season but should give him a shot to be ready at the start of the 2025 campaign. Story will have played just 145 of a possible 486 games (31 percent) in three seasons with the Red Sox after signing a six-year, $140 million contract. Boston is expected to use a platoon of David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez at shortstop for the time being.
Apr 7 2024Story (shoulder) said Saturday he hopes to play again this year but indicated there's a chance he's out for the season, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a dislocated left shoulder and is without an official timetable for his return, but it appears he could be out for most or all of the season. Story is undergoing a more extensive evaluation Monday in Boston, which should shed more light on the length of his absence. Pablo Reyes and David Hamilton are the likely favorites to fill in at shortstop for the Red Sox.
Apr 6 2024Story was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Red Sox on Saturday with a dislocated left shoulder, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story suffered the injury during Friday's game against the Angels when he landed awkwardly after attempting a diving stop on a grounder. He will undergo a more extensive exam Monday in Boston, during which he'll be checked for potential labrum damage. A determination could be made then if he needs surgery or will attempt the rest and rehab route. Pablo Reyes is starting at shortstop Saturday and David Hamilton -- who replaced Story on the active roster -- could also see some action at short.
Apr 5 2024Story had to leave Friday's game against the Angels after injuring his left shoulder, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story landed awkwardly on his left shoulder after attempting to make a diving grab at a ground ball in the top of the fourth inning. He looked to be in a considerable amount of pain as he walked off the field, and a trip to the injured list may be coming for the 31-year-old infielder. Should Story have to sit out for an extended period of time, Pablo Reyes would likely take on most of the work at shortstop, though Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) may also fill in once he returns from the IL.
Apr 3 2024Story went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in Tuesday's 5-4 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story doubled in Boston's first run in the first inning then singled in the game-tying run in the seventh. After a slow start, going 1-for-13 through the season's first three games, Story's bat has come alive. He's hit in three straight (6-for-13) with three doubles and four RBI.
Mar 13 2024Story went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's spring game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's having a fine spring, posting a .360 average and 1.048 OPS through 28 Grapefruit League plate appearances. He slotted in third in the batting order Tuesday, a comfortable spot behind Rafael Devers and ahead of Triston Casas. The shortstop is finally healthy after two injury-marred seasons for Boston.
Mar 10 2024Story (neck) will start at shortstop and bat third in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll be manning shortstop for the second time in as many days after playing four innings while going 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in his return to the lineup for Saturday's 4-0 win over the Rays. Story had missed the previous two days of action with neck tightness, but his ability to get back in the lineup quickly on consecutive days suggests his health is no longer a concern.
Mar 7 2024Story was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta due to neck stiffness, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox have described Story's removal as precautionary, so he'll be day-to-day and should have a good chance at returning to action at some point within the next week. David Hamilton will replace Story at shortstop Thursday, batting ninth.
Mar 3 2024Story went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Saturday's spring game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story, making his fourth appearance of the Grapefruit League, has struck out six times in 12 plate appearances. He's missed a lot of time the last two seasons due to injury, and he enters 2024 with questions about what he can give fantasy managers. He'll be Boston's starting shortstop and will have a chance to answer those questions. The Red Sox lack thump from the right side of the plate and will look for Story to produce similar results as he did as a member of the Rockies between 2016 and 2021.
Sep 29 2023Story went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and one steal in Friday's victory over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story opened the scoring Friday night with a 413-foot, two-run blast off John Means in the fifth inning. The Boston shortstop later swiped his 10th base, notching double-digit steals for the sixth consecutive year. Despite the nice start to the weekend, Story has had a tough year, slashing .200/.250/.320.
Sep 24 2023Story is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story went 3-for-4 with a run during the first game of the series versus Chicago, but he's otherwise gone 4-for-34 since Sept. 10 and has a .505 OPS this month. Pablo Reyes will man the keystone and bat seventh Sunday.
Sep 20 2023Story is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is hitting .155 with one home run, three steals and 20 strikeouts in 58 at-bats this month. Ceddanne Rafaela is starting at shortstop and leading off against righty Jon Gray.
Sep 14 2023Story isn't in the Red Sox's lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Yankees, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI en route to the team's victory in Game 1, Story will get a breather to conclude the series. Ceddanne Rafaela will fill in at shortstop and bat in the leadoff spot while Story rests.
Sep 12 2023Story is not in the lineup for the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Yankees, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ceddanne Rafaela is at shortstop for the Red Sox in the afternoon tilt. Story -- who has just a .509 OPS in his first 27 games this season -- will likely be back in the lineup for the nightcap.
Sep 9 2023Story went 3-for-6 with a double, two RBI, one run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's loss against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's three hits Saturday matched his total from the previous 38 at-bats (11 contests) while the stolen base was his second in three games. Since returning from the injured list Aug. 8, the 30-year-old shortstop is batting .190 with one home run, seven RBI, seven runs and seven steals across 105 plate appearances.
Sep 5 2023Story is out of the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been unable to find his groove at the plate since returning just under a month ago, managing just a .507 OPS through 22 games. He'll get a breather Tuesday to recharge the batteries. Ceddanne Rafaela is at shortstop and leading off versus Zach Eflin.
Sep 2 2023Story went 0-for-4 in Friday's 13-2 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story continues to slump as the calendar flips to September. The shortstop has one hit in his last 20 at-bats and is 7-for-57 (.123) with a 35.0 K% over the last 14 games. While the Red Sox's playoff chances dim amid a five-game losing streak, the team may want the veteran to get as many at-bats as possible after missing the first four months of the season.
Aug 30 2023Story is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Astros, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story had been in the lineup for each of the previous five tilts but will begin Wednesday's matinee on the bench. Ceddanne Rafaela is handling shortstop for the Red Sox.
Aug 25 2023Story went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's two-run shot in the second inning was his first home run since Sep. 4 of last season. He's produced back-to-back multi-hit games after posting a .517 OPS through his first 13 contests of the year. Story improved his slash line to .232/.271/.375 with six extra-base hits through 59 plate appearances.
Aug 24 2023Story is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game in Houston, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story had started each of the last four contests but will sit out Thursday's afternoon game. Pablo Reyes is covering shortstop and Luis Urias is at second base.
Aug 23 2023Story went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 7-5 extra-inning win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story had hit a skid over the last week, going 2-for-28 with 10 strikeouts over his previous seven games. He still struck out three times Wednesday, but he was a little more productive at the plate. The shortstop is batting .212 with no home runs, four steals, five doubles and three runs scored over 13 contests this year, with his RBI in this game being his first of the campaign. He missed over four months to begin the season while recovering from elbow surgery, so it's not a surprise for him to be scuffling a bit.
Aug 19 2023Story will be on the bench for Saturday's game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story sits for just the second time in 11 games since returning from elbow surgery. He hasn't exactly hit the ground running after his long absence, slashing .200/.243/.314 after going hitless in his last four games. Pablo Reyes will fill in at shortstop.
Aug 13 2023Story went 4-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and two steals in Sunday's victory over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a huge day for Story, who's now 7-for-11(.636) with four doubles and three steals over his last four games. Overall, the 30-year-old shortstop is batting .368 (7-for-19) with a .979 OPS across 20 plate appearances since returning from the IL on Aug. 9. Story could certainly provide some value down the stretch while batting in the middle of Boston's lineup.
Aug 12 2023Story will sit Saturday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story started four straight games after his return from elbow surgery, appearing twice at shortstop and twice at designated hitter. Those positions will be filled by Pablo Reyes and Justin Turner, respectively, on Saturday, but Story's initial usage suggests the team believes he's already ready for a heavy workload.
Aug 10 2023Story was the designated hitter and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 4-3 win over Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story started on back-to-back days since coming off the injured list but was given a break from the field after starting at shortstop Tuesday. He's 0-for-8 with six strikeouts.
Aug 9 2023Story started at shortstop and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Tuesday's 9-3 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a quiet night for Story, who batted third and made his season debut after returning from an elbow injury. He may need some time to adjust to MLB pitching after the shortstop went 12-for-40 (.300) and posted a 1.117 OPS with four doubles and four home runs over 13 games while on a rehab assignment.
Aug 8 2023Story (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is starting at shortstop and batting third in his season debut Tuesday versus the Royals and right-hander Brady Singer. Recovered from January internal brace surgery on his right elbow, the 30-year-old middle infielder posted an encouraging .300/.417/.700 batting line with four home runs and four doubles in 13 minor-league rehab games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. Yu Chang has been designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move.
Aug 7 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Story (elbow) will return from the 60-day injured list for Tuesday's game against the Royals, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Over the weekend, Cora noted that Story would remain on assignment at Triple-A Worcester through Thrusday, when his 20-day rehab window would have expired. After further deliberation, however, the Red Sox elected to bring Story back a couple days earlier than expected. The 30-year-old's surgically repaired right elbow showed no ill effects over the course of his 13-game rehab assignment between Worcester and Double-A Portland, as he amassed an 1.117 OPS while walking at a 14.1 percent clip and playing 51 innings in the field. Story is expected to immediately settle in as the Red Sox's everyday shortstop after he played primarily at second base during his first season with the club in 2022.
Aug 6 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that Story (elbow) will remain on his rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester until his 20-day window expires Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story hasn't experienced any reported setbacks with his surgically repaired elbow since he began the rehab assignment July 21, but the Red Sox want to give the 30-year-old as much time as possible to knock off the rust both at the plate and in the field. Between stints with Worcester and Double-A Portland, Story has posted a .967 OPS over 12 games, and he's also logged 44 total innings at shortstop. If Story is activated from the 60-day injured list Thursday as anticipated, he'll step back in as Boston's everyday shortstop, though Cora could deploy him as a designated hitter once or twice a week in an effort to ease him back into the mix.
Aug 5 2023Story (elbow) will remain on assignment with Triple-A Worcester through the weekend, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The plan calls for Story to DH on Saturday before playing shortstop for the WooSox on Sunday. Worcester is then off Monday, and Story's 20-day rehab window closes Wednesday, so the shortstop seems likely to be back with the Red Sox at some point next week. He recently expressed a desire to remain on his rehab assignment as he tries to shake the rust after the long layoff from an internal bracing procedure.
Aug 2 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Story (elbow) won't be activated off the 60-day injured list Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story expressed a desire to remain with Triple-A Worcester and continue rehabbing, so he'll take another couple of days to gear up for his season debut. The 30-year-old infielder is currently slashing .250/.400/.688 through six games in Triple-A during his assignment.
Aug 1 2023Manager Alex Cora indicated Tuesday that Story (elbow) isn't a lock to be reinstated from the injured list this weekend, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder doesn't appear to have suffered any sort of setback, and he could still be activated this weekend and will at least be reinstated before his rehab assignment expires Aug. 9. Yu Chang has recently been operating as Boston's shortstop but has a .544 OPS in 97 plate appearances this season, so it should be Story's job once he's on the active roster.
Jul 29 2023Story (elbow) went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run for Triple-A Worcester on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story played the field once again and is looking ready to be activated. The Red Sox's official site indicates Story could be activated when the team begins a homestand next Friday against the Blue Jays.
Jul 27 2023Story (elbow) started at shortstop and went 2-for-3 with a double and was hit by a pitch for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story, who moved up to the WooSox after playing three rehab games at Double-A Portland, has served in the field for three of the four rehab games thus far. Red Sox manager Alex Cora suggested Story could return to Boston this coming weekend, and MLB.com reports he'll start at shortstop immediately upon his activation from the injured list. It had been speculated that Story would initially serve as the designated hitter before playing the field.
Jul 25 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora on Tuesday wouldn't rule out a return this weekend for Story (elbow) if the shortstop says he's ready, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is currently slated to play shortstop Tuesday, serve as the designated hitter Wednesday and then return to shortstop Thursday in his first three rehab games at Triple-A Worcester. He has already played three rehab contests at Double-A Portland, going 2-for-8 with a home run. Cora did indicate that Story's timing is off at the plate and they didn't want to rush the infielder back, so a return this weekend might be a bit of a push. It shouldn't be long, though.
Jul 23 2023Story (elbow) will move to Triple-A Worcester to continue his rehab assignment this week, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story began a rehab assignment at Double-A Portland on Friday and has gone 2-for-8 with a three-run homer, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts over his first three games. The 30-year-old will likely require several games with the Triple-A club before he's cleared to rejoin the Red Sox, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him activated sometime in early August.
Jul 22 2023Story (elbow) went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in his second rehab game Saturday at Double-A Portland, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story began his rehab assignment with a bang Friday, slugging a three-run homer and drawing a walk while scoring two runs. It has been 10 months since he last played regularly in live games, though, so some rust should be expected. The 30-year-old infielder remains on track to make his 2023 debut with the Red Sox around the beginning of August.
Jul 21 2023Story (elbow) went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer, a walk and two runs scored in his rehab debut Friday at Double-A Portland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story also played five innings at shortstop in a promising start to what is likely to be a lengthy minor-league rehab stint. He's expected to serve as Portland's designated hitter Saturday before then logging five more innings at shortstop Sunday. The 30-year-old infielder has been out all season while recovering from January internal brace surgery to repair the UCL in his right elbow.
Jul 19 2023Story (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Friday at Double-A Portland, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The initial plan calls for Story to play five innings at shortstop Friday, then serve as the designated hitter Saturday, followed by another five innings at short Sunday. Boston manager Alex Cora said Story is feeling good physically, both at the plate and in the field, and that the assignment is about building him up. The manager also stressed the organization will not rush Story back despite a desperate need for stability at the shortstop position in the majors. The rehab assignment could last up to 20 days.
Jul 18 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated that the club will announce Tuesday when Story (elbow) will begin his minor-league rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: By all indications, Story is on the verge of playing in games in the minors. The big questions now are when, where exactly and for how long? It's possible Story will have to work his way up the ladder in the minor leagues, and he could potentially need close to the full 20 days afforded to him on the rehab assignment. Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow in January and the Red Sox need him to show he can throw well enough with that elbow to play in the field upon his return.
Jul 15 2023Story (elbow) won't begin a rehab assignment this weekend but will be re-evaluated early next week, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reports from early July indicated that Story had a shot to begin his rehab assignment immediately after the break, but that was never officially confirmed as a definite plan, so the fact that he's not quite ready doesn't necessarily count as a setback. If he's cleared for game action early next week, he'll still have a chance to return sometime in early August.
Jul 10 2023Story (elbow) is throwing from 160-170 feet, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will continue to work out at Fenway Park during the All-Star break and is optimistic about beginning a rehab assignment shortly after the break. "I'm almost there," Story said. "I think we'll have a rehab assignment pretty quick after the All-Star break, not exactly sure when." The rehab assignment can be a maximum of 20 days, and Red Sox expect him back at some point during August.
Jul 5 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that there's a chance Story (elbow) could be ready for a rehab assignment immediately after the All-Star break, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cora also noted that when Story returns it will be as a shortstop, as the team has no plans to bring him back sooner as a designated hitter. August has been mentioned as a timeline for Story's return and with the way things are progressing it's looking like he could be ready right around the beginning of that month. "He's been so good so far, no obstacles, no red flags, you never know what can happen in the upcoming days ... but so far it's trending in the right direction, and fast," Cora said of Story.
Jul 4 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated Tuesday that he's encouraged by how Story's (elbow) rehab is going, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "He's feeling good, he's throwing the ball well... he's making some tough throws... It's looking good, it's looking good," Cora said. "I don't want to get too excited, let's put it that way." Story -- who is coming back from an internal brace procedure on his right elbow -- is slated to take batting practice Tuesday. He's expected to be ready to return at shortstop for the Red Sox sometime in August, although the club has not yet ruled out bringing him back earlier as a designated hitter.
Jul 2 2023Story (elbow) is scheduled to take live batting practice Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran shortstop previously indicated a return in August could be possible, though manager Alex Cora decline to offer any sort of return timeline Sunday. Story's advancement to facing live pitching is encouraging news, but the progression of his throwing program is likely of greater importance given he's returning from internal bracing surgery in his right elbow.
Jun 12 2023Story (elbow) offered August as a rough timeline for when he'll be able to play shortstop when asked Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It remains possible that Story could return sooner as a designated hitter, although that hasn't been decided yet and it's unclear how likely of a scenario it is. Story has increased his throwing to 120 feet as he recovers from an internal bracing procedure of his right elbow and he's aiming to build up to 150 feet.
Jun 5 2023Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that Story (elbow) could be activated from the 60-day injured list to serve as a designated hitter before he's ready to play the field, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though the outcome still appears somewhat unlikely, it's notable that Cora didn't outright dismiss the possibility of Story returning to action in a non-defensive role. Now just under five months removed from undergoing an internal bracing procedure on his right elbow, Story has been cleared to resume throwing from 105 feet out at the Red Sox's spring training complex in Florida, and he's also been taking batting practice in the cage. He'll rejoin the Red Sox next week as the organization maps out the next steps in his rehab program.
May 12 2023Story (elbow) has been hitting and throwing at the Red Sox' spring training complex in Florida, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's rehab from an internal bracing procedure of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow has gone well to this point. He's still in the relatively early stages of what will be a long road to recovery, but the infielder has a chance to play a good amount for the Red Sox in the second half if all progresses as expected.
Apr 4 2023Story (elbow) started work with a plyometric ball in preparation to begin a throwing program within the next two weeks, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is 12 weeks removed from an internal bracing procedure, which is a modified version of Tommy John surgery designed to repair and reinforce the elbow ligaments. He's been running to keep in shape and has now added the plyo ball, which is a rubber ball that will build arm strength before Story cuts loss with a baseball. In addition to running and plyo ball work, Story has been taking grounders without throwing every other day. He's at least a few months away from returning.
Apr 2 2023Story (elbow) is scheduled to begin a throwing program in two weeks, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will begin throwing in the middle of April, and assuming all goes well, the infielder will start a hitting program two weeks later. The 30-year-old underwent internal brace surgery in January to repair the UCL in his right elbow, and he's expected to miss at least the first half of the 2023 season. Being able to hit and throw before the end of May suggests he's at least on schedule with that timeline.
Mar 10 2023Story (elbow) fielded grounders Thursday in Red Sox camp, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was his first time doing any on-field baseball activity since he underwent internal brace surgery in January to repair the UCL in his right elbow. "It's something small in the grand scheme of things," Story said Friday. "But in the progression it's big ... It was a good day." The positive step here is encouraging, but there remains no exact timetable for when the 30-year-old infielder might return to action for Boston. He can be ruled out through at least the first half of the 2023 campaign.
Feb 16 2023The Red Sox placed Story (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster. Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on his UCL in January and is expected to be sidelined at least until the second half of the season. With Story out, Enrique Hernandez will handle shortstop and Christian Arroyo will cover second base, at least until Adalberto Mondesi (knee) is ready.
Feb 15 2023Story (elbow) acknowledged Wednesday that he won't be realistically ready to play until the second half of the season in a "best-case scenario," Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on the UCL of his right elbow in January, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com relayed that the infielder was looking at a 4-to-6-month recovery timeline, based on previous examples of players who have opted for the modified version of Tommy John surgery. Based on comments from Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and Story himself, the 30-year-old looks as though he'll need the full six months to recover, and he could be in store for additional missed time beyond that. Story admitted that there's a possibility he doesn't play at all during the 2023 season, though at this early stage of his rehab, he remains "right on track," according to Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. Story has currently been going through range-of-motion work at his offseason home, but he remains undecided about whether he'll continue his rehab program at the Red Sox's spring training facility in Florida or back in Boston once the season gets underway.
Jan 21 2023Story (elbow) believes he will be able to play in 2023, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on the UCL in his right elbow in the middle of January. The infielder is expected to miss at least 4-6 months while he recovers from the procedure, but that timeline does give him an opportunity to return at some point this summer. While Story is out, it appears that Enrique Hernandez will see the majority of his playing time at shortstop, but the Red Sox have made it known they are looking for additional help in the middle of their infield.
Jan 10 2023Story underwent an internal bracing procedure on the UCL in his right elbow Monday and is likely to open the 2023 season on the injured list, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The procedure is an alternative to Tommy John surgery and should carry a shorter recovery time, though Story is nonetheless still expected to miss time. The Red Sox have yet to announce when they expect him back, though players typically take 4-to-6 months to return from the surgery, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. That timeline indicates Story could return to game action sometime between mid-May and mid-July. The timing is particularly bad for the Red Sox, as Story had been expected to slide back to shortstop following the departure of Xander Bogaerts. Enrique Hernandez may be asked to step into the middle infield, though that would create a new hole in center field.
Dec 15 2022Story is the top internal option to start at shortstop for the Red Sox following the departure of Xander Bogaerts, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story returning to his natural position isn't a slam dunk, though, given concerns about his throwing arm. It's still possible the team opts to keep him at second base and either acquire a shortstop from outside the organization or put Enrique Hernandez there. As Cotillo points out, Story ranked in the 97th percentile in outs above average at second base but just the eighth percentile in arm strength in 2022.
Sep 29 2022Story (heel) is dealing with an illness and is unlikely to play again this season, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox hoped to get Story back from the heel injury before the season came to a close, but his illness will prevent him from traveling for Boston's upcoming series in Toronto, and he's unlikely to be activated for the three-game set versus Tampa Bay next week. Assuming Story is indeed done for the year, the trio of Christian Arroyo, Enrique Hernandez and Yu Chang will hold down second base the rest of the way.
Sep 28 2022Story (heel) is scheduled to hit against rehabbing starting pitcher Kutter Crawford (shoulder) in a simulated game Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story, who has been sidelined since Sept. 11 with a left heel contusion, is still angling to play again in 2022, though the Red Sox don't plan to activate him from the 10-day injured list until Monday at the soonest. Facing live pitching marks a step in the right direction for Story, but he'll still need to resume defensive drills and a running program before the Red Sox sign off on his return.
Sep 27 2022The earliest possible return for Story (heel) is during Boston's final series against the Rays, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After landing on the injured list Thursday with a left heel contusion, Story was ruled out for the entirety of Boston's current series with Baltimore and the team's next series in Toronto. With the Red Sox out of the playoff race, it is a real possibility that they simply shut him down for the season and look to 2023.
Sep 22 2022Story was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left heel contusion Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 19, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been sidelined with his heel injury for over a week, and he'll miss at least another week after the Red Sox opted to place him on the injured list. While the 29-year-old will be eligible to return as early as Sept. 29, it's possible that he'll be shut down for the remainder of the season since Boston isn't in the playoff picture. Bobby Dalbec was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, and Christian Arroyo should see increased playing time at second base while Story is unavailable.
Sep 21 2022Story (heel) isn't starting Wednesday against the Reds, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is out of the lineup for a seventh consecutive game due to a heel issue, and it's not yet clear when he'll be able to return to the field. Enrique Hernandez will take his place at second base and bat ninth.
Sep 20 2022Story (heel) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story ran Sunday and had an extra day to rest with the Red Sox off Monday, but he is still not ready to return to action. Story was close to getting back on the field last week, but as things stand, it's unclear when he will be cleared to do so.
Sep 18 2022Story (heel) is not in Sunday's lineup against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been sidelined all week with left heel soreness, but he hit and ran the bases Sunday. Yu Chang gets the start at the keystone, hitting eighth. Boston has an off day Monday before a two-game series in Cincinnati.
Sep 17 2022Story (heel) isn't starting Saturday against the Royals, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story continues to deal with a heel issue and will be excluded from the lineup for a fourth consecutive game. Christian Arroyo is starting at the keystone and batting fifth.
Sep 16 2022Story (heel) isn't starting Friday against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox hoped that Story would return to action Friday, but he'll remain out of the lineup for a third consecutive game. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available off the bench if needed, but Christian Arroyo will start at the keystone and bat seventh.
Sep 14 2022Story (heel), who isn't starting Wednesday against the Yankees, will likely return Friday against Kansas City, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is sidelined for a second consecutive game due to left heel pain Wednesday, but it seems likely that he'll be back in action following Boston's scheduled off day Thursday. The 29-year-old has been relatively productive since the start of September, slashing .286/.342/.486 with a home run, four doubles, eight RBI, two runs and a stolen base over nine games.
Sep 13 2022Story (heel) is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will miss the first of a two-game series against the Yankees after leaving Sunday's game with left heel pain. Christian Arroyo is starting at second base and hitting sixth. Yu Chang was claimed off waivers Monday, but he has not been activated yet, so if Story's injury is serious, he could end up on the injured list as the corresponding move for Chang's activation in the near future.
Sep 11 2022Story was removed from Sunday's game against the Orioles in the bottom of the seventh inning due to left heel pain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story grounded into a double play to end the top of the seventh inning, and he was replaced defensively to begin the bottom half of the frame. Prior to his departure, he went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He'll be able to rest during Boston's scheduled day off Monday, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be available for Tuesday's series opener against the Yankees.
Sep 5 2022Story went 3-for-4 with a double and a three-run home run in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story erased a Boston deficit in the bottom of the first inning with his three-run blast, the 16th homer of the season for the second baseman. He's hit safely in six of seven games since coming off the injured list, going 13-for-28 with five extra-base hits, four RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Sep 1 2022Story isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Rangers, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been productive at the plate since returning from the injured list last weekend, having gone 7-for-15 with a double, two runs, two stolen bases, a walk and four strikeouts over four games. However, he'll get a day off Thursday while Christian Arroyo starts at the keystone and bats sixth.
Aug 29 2022Story went 3-for-3 with a run scored, a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 4-2 loss to Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story knocked three singles and stole his first base since June 26. He's 4-for-6 in two games since returning from the injured list after dealing with a wrist injury. He's now slashing .230/.298/.428 with 11 steals, 51 runs scored and 32 extra-base hits through 83 games.
Aug 28 2022Story is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story went 1-for-3 with a run scored in his return from the injured list Saturday, but he'll step out of the lineup for the series finale versus Tampa Bay. Christian Arroyo will start at the keystone and bat sixth Sunday.
Aug 27 2022Story (wrist) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's activation was expected Saturday, and he'll officially be in the lineup for Boston's matchup against Tampa Bay. The 29-year-old appeared in two rehab games at Double-A Portland this week and went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three runs, three RBI, a walk and a strikeout.
Aug 26 2022Story (wrist) will likely be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story concluded his two-game rehab assignment Thursday, and he went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, three runs and three RBI during his time with the minor-league club. He was evaluated by Boston's medical staff Friday and will likely be able to rejoin the lineup for Saturday's matchup against Tampa Bay.
Aug 25 2022Story (wrist) started at second base and went 1-for-1 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored for Double-A Portland on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story kicked off a rehab assignment by playing four innings in the field before being replaced. The exact plan for Story has not been divulged, but the Red Sox likely want to see him play a full game in the field and maybe on back-to-back days before returning him to Boston.
Aug 23 2022Story (wrist) will report to Double-A Portland on Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was cleared to resume game action for the first time since July 12 after he was able to take batting practice Tuesday without any renewed discomfort in his fractured right wrist, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox haven't specified how long Story's rehab assignment will last, but he'll presumably need multiple games to regain his timing at the plate and get comfortable in the field again after being sidelined with the injury for the past five weeks.
Aug 19 2022Story (wrist) has taken batting practice and hit off a machine this week, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been nearly a month since Story was placed on the injured list with what was eventually diagnosed as a hairline fracture in his right wrist. His recent work at PNC Park indicates he should soon be ready to begin a rehab assignment, if he responds well to the increased activity.
Aug 14 2022Story (wrist) will travel with the Red Sox for the series in Pittsburgh beginning Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been swinging the bat regularly over the last week, and the plan calls for him to take batting practice in Pittsburgh. That the club is bringing him on the road suggests he could be activated at some point during the week, either in Pittsburgh or later in Baltimore.
Aug 9 2022Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Story (wrist) has resumed swinging a bat, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team isn't yet providing a timeline for Story's return from the 10-day injured list, but his ability to start swinging again is the first sign of progress for the second baseman since he was diagnosed in late July with a hairline fracture of his right wrist. Until Story returns from the wrist injury, Christian Arroyo will serve as the Red Sox's primary option at the keystone.
Jul 30 2022Story has been diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his wrist, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was initially diagnosed with a bruised right hand when he landed on the injured list July 16, but he continued to experience discomfort and received a second opinion Saturday. The 29-year-old will be shut down from swinging for 10-14 days following his diagnosis, so he'll likely be unable to return to game action until at least mid-to-late August. Christian Arroyo should serve as the primary second baseman until Story is cleared to return.
Jul 29 2022Story (hand) will get a second opinion on his injury in the coming days, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox don't think Story is dealing with any structural issues in his right hand, but he's still feeling discomfort and will be further evaluated as a result. The 29-year-old has been on the injured list since mid-July, and it's not yet clear when he'll be able to return to game action.
Jul 28 2022Manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Story is still experiencing discomfort in his right hand, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cora didn't elaborate any further on Story's situation, but the skipper's comments would seem to suggest the 29-year-old won't be an option for this weekend's series with the Brewers. Story's ongoing absence should pave the way for Yolmer Sanchez and Jeter Downs to pick up more work at second base.
Jul 25 2022Story (hand) swung a bat Sunday for the first time sustaining a hand injury that landed him on the injured list, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is eligible to return from the injured list, but he's not yet ready to play in a game. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said they'll see how the infielder responds Monday and hopefully activate him at some point during the week. Cora added that a rehab assignment is being discussed but no firm decision has been made.
Jul 22 2022Story (hand) tracked pitches Friday but isn't yet swinging a bat, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is feeling better following the All-Star break but hasn't yet been cleared for full activity. The 29-year-old should be on the injured list longer than the minimum of 10 days, and a clearer timetable for his return will presumably come into focus once he's able to ramp up his workload.
Jul 16 2022Story was placed on the injured list with a bruised right hand Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been out since being hit in the hand by a pitch Tuesday against Tampa Bay. The decision to place him on the injured list won't cost him many days due to the All-Star break. The move can be backdated to Wednesday, meaning he'll be eligible to return for the second game of the second half. Connor Wong was recalled to take his place on the roster.
Jul 15 2022Story (finger) isn't starting Friday's game against the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will be out of the lineup for a third consecutive game as he continues to deal with a finger injury. Whether he's available off the bench remains to be seen, but Jeter Downs will start at the keystone and bat ninth Friday.
Jul 14 2022Story (finger) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rays, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora already implied Wednesday that Story wouldn't be available for the final two contests of the series in Tampa Bay, so the second baseman's absence from the starting nine for the second day in a row comes as little surprise. Jeter Downs will pick up another start in place of Story, who disclosed Wednesday that he's unsure if he'll be able to avoid a trip to the injured list ahead of the All-Star break, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican. Story was removed from Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay after he was hit by a pitch on the knuckle of his right ring finger.
Jul 13 2022Manager Alex Cora said he's hopeful Story (hand) can return to the lineup at some point during the Red Sox's weekend series with the Yankees, implying the second baseman will be on the bench for games Wednesday and Thursday against the Rays, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was cleared of any structural damage to his bruised right hand after he was hit by a pitch in Tuesday's loss, but he looks like he'll still be forced to miss at least a couple games due to the injury. Jeter Downs replaced Story on Tuesday and could serve as the Red Sox's primary option at the keystone until Story is cleared to play again.
Jul 12 2022Story was diagnosed with a right hand contusion after leaving Tuesday's game against the Rays, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican, Story is scheduled to undergo X-rays later Tuesday. The 29-year-old will continue to be evaluated and should be considered day-to-day for now.
Jul 11 2022Story went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs and three RBI in Sunday's 11-6 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The three RBI matched Story's total from his previous 10 contests combined. Story had gotten on base at a poor .222 clip over those 10 games, and even after Sunday's big effort, his slash line sits at a disappointing .225/.294/.430 for the season. Per Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic, Story will stick in the lineup as Boston's No. 6 hitter in Monday's series opener with the Rays, and he's unlikely to be moved up in the order until he finds sustained success at the plate over an extended period.
Jul 9 2022Story went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 12-5 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took Nestor Cortes deep in the fourth inning, but the Red Sox were already staring into a 9-2 deficit at that point. Story has gone yard three times during his five-game hit streak, and while the surge has only lifted his slash line on the year to .224/.295/.432, he's still been productive with 15 homers, 10 steals, 46 runs and 55 RBI through 77 contests.
Jul 5 2022Story went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in an 8-4 loss to the Rays on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story picked up his 14th home run of the season, and his second over the past two games, by driving an offering from Jeffrey Springs deep to left center. The 29-year-old second baseman also struck out three times on the night. His performance is representative of his season at large. Story has a solid home run total which is marred by strikeouts. He is striking out at a 30.9% rate and is only slashing .224/.297/.427 on the year despite being a career .268 hitter.
Jul 3 2022Story will rest for Sunday's game against the Cubs, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both Story and J.D. Martinez are said to be on the bench, though the lineup has not been posted yet for Boston. The Red Sox play an early game Monday against the Rays. Look for Story to be back in the lineup in front of the July 4 crowd at Fenway.
Jun 29 2022Story is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he's started in every game for Boston dating back to June 10, Story's absence from the lineup may just be maintenance-related. With the Red Sox off the schedule Thursday before returning to action Friday for the start of a three-game series with the Cubs, Story will effectively get two straight days off. Yolmer Sanchez will start at second base in place of Story, who went 2-for-7 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in the first two contests in Toronto.
Jun 26 2022Story went 2-for-6 with a stolen base and two RBI in a 8-3 win Sunday in Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story singled and stole his 10th base in the second and added a two-run single in the sixth. The stolen base gives him double-digit steals and homers for the fifth consecutive season. While his .227/.304/.414 is not what Boston had in mind when they signed him to a $140 million contract in the offseason, his counting stats are fairly good and he's on pace to hit over 20 homers, drive in over 100 runs and steal more than 20 bases.
Jun 22 2022Story went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in a 6-2 victory against Detroit on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's eighth-inning single extended his modest hitting streak to six games, and he followed with his ninth theft of the campaign. The veteran infielder's .223/.303/.421 slash line on the season remains disappointing, but the steals combined with 11 homers and 48 RBI have allowed him to maintain a fair amount of fantasy value.
Jun 20 2022Story went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run Sunday in the Red Sox's 6-4 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's second-inning, two-out blast off St. Louis starter Andre Pallante ended a 20-game home-run drought, during which the 29-year-old contributed only six extra-base hits (all doubles). Aside from a one-week stretch in late May in which he slugged seven home runs and drove in 21, Story's first season in Boston has largely been a disappointment. He'll enter Monday's series opener against the Tigers with a .221/.304/.411 slash line and a 31.2 percent strikeout rate, his highest percentage since the 2017 campaign.
Jun 9 2022Story isn't starting Thursday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is getting a rare day off after he hit .280 with four doubles, four runs, four RBI and two stolen bases over the last six games. Christian Arroyo will draw the start at second base and lead off.
Jun 5 2022Story went 2-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-0 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's batting just .235 for the season, but he's delivered when runners are in scoring position (1.073 OPS). Four of his last five hits are doubles, as the second baseman has picked up in June where he left off in May. After delivering 32 runs during the previous month, Story has three RBI in the first three games in June.
Jun 4 2022Story went 2-for-3 with two walks, a double, two RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 7-2 win over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's two-run double in the sixth inning turned out to be the game-winning hit and ended a six-game RBI drought. Prior to that, he had knocked in 21 runs over seven contests to vault himself among the MLB leaders in runs batted in. The second baseman now delivered a team-high 39 runs, placing him eighth overall in the league.
May 28 2022Story isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been on a tear recently, slashing .313/.395/.969 with seven homers, 21 RBI, 11 runs and two stolen bases over the last eight games. He'll get his first breather since April 25, though, and Christian Arroyo will man the keystone and hit sixth in Saturday's matinee.
May 27 2022Story went 2-for-4 with a home run, two total runs, four total RBI, a walk and a stolen base in Thursday's 16-7 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story singled in a run in the first inning off Dallas Keuchel and got to the veteran hurler for a three-run blast to left field in the second. This was his third multi-hit game over his past seven contests, upping his batting average to .232 on the season. Over the weeklong hot stretch, Story is slashing .345/.394/1.069 with seven homers, 21 RBI and two stolen bases.
May 24 2022Story went 2-for-6 with a three-run home run, two runs and two RBI in Tuesday's victory over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story launched a three-run home run off Dylan Cease in the first inning and later added an RBI single in the fifth frame before coming around to score on a Christian Vazquez long ball. The homer was his eighth of the year and he has now gone deep in back-back contests and four out of five games. Over that stretch, the shortstop has gone 8-for-21 with six long balls, nine runs, 17 RBI and a stolen base. After a slow start to the season, the torrid stretch has his season numbers up to a .231 average with eight homers, 33 RBI, 23 runs and five stolen bases over 143 at-bats in 37 games in his first season with Boston.
May 20 2022Story went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Friday's 7-3 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story launched a grand slam off of Robbie Ray in the third inning to get Boston on the board. After starting his Red Sox career with a 25-game homerless drought, Story has six over his last nine games, including four in just the last two days. He's raised his OPS from .613 to .746 with his two-day onslaught.
May 19 2022Story went 4-for-4 with three home runs, seven RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base Thursday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story blasted a pair of two-run homers and a three-run shot to bring his total on the season to five. Overshadowed by his powerful performance, Story also swiped his fifth bag of the campaign and has yet to be caught. He raised his OPS over 100 points with the effort but still owns a disappointing .230/.317/.413 line across 145 plate appearances for the season.
May 17 2022Story went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a stolen base in Monday's 6-3 win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His seventh-inning blast off Phil Maton was his first home homer as a member of the Red Sox and it left Fenway Park entirely, flying over the Green Monster and onto Lansdowne Street. Both of Story's home runs on the season have come in the last five games as he begins to show signs of life at the plate, and he's also stolen a bag in three straight games.
May 12 2022Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story launched his first home run for his new team 26 games into the season. The second baseman's season-opening slump still hangs over the Red Sox, but a 3-for-9 stretch with a homer and four RBI over the last two games is an encouraging sign. He's had a few starts and stops with respect to the slump, but Story's relief was evident in his first laundry cart ride of the season.
May 11 2022Story batted sixth and went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 9-4 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was dropped to sixth in the order amid a 1-for-16 slump that's included 10 strikeouts and ornery fans at Fenway Park. It was the second time within the last week he's been dropped, and it appeared to help. Story padded Boston's two-run lead in the ninth inning when he laced a two-run single with the bases loaded -- the latest sign the second baseman's bat may be emerging from a season-opening slumber. "Good at-bats, good swing, good path. It's just one of those, he had the bases loaded at the end," Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. "Like I said before, that's the nature of the game. But I think overall, a lot of good at-bats." Story is one of several struggling hitters on a team that entered Tuesday's contest averaging 3.3 runs per game.
May 7 2022Story batted second and went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's 4-2 loss to the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story, who had been leading off, was dropped to the two-hole following a four-strikeout effort Thursday. That happened as it looked like Story was climbing out of an early-season slump. The second baseman is slashing .212/.292/.294 through 22 games (96 plate appearances).
May 6 2022Story went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Thursday's 8-0 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story built momentum over the previous three games, but Shohei Ohtani put an end to that, handing the second baseman a golden sombrero. The Fenway Faithful let Story know they were not pleased with the performance, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, but his teammates and manager have his back. Story is batting .210 with a .293 OBP, .296 slugging percentage and .589 OPS over 21 games. He's still seeking his first home run.
May 5 2022Story went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI in Wednesday's 10-5 extra-inning loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Well before Boston's bullpen melted down in the final two innings, Story was the "story" for the Red Sox. He's struggled since Opening Day but has shown recent signs he may be turning the corner at the plate. He had a two-hit game Saturday in Baltimore followed by a three-walk effort Sunday. "That was a big day for me, the three walks," Story told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. "When I can control the strike zone like that and make decisions like that, good things are going to come. I've felt that way for the past week and it has been nice. I know I'm pretty close." Perhaps signing late in spring training has led to a slow start. Story has yet to homer and has a career-high 28.4 K%.
Apr 25 2022Story isn't starting Monday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story led off in the last four games and went 4-for-17 with a double, three runs, a stolen base, a walk and three strikeouts. He'll get a breather while Christian Arroyo starts at the keystone and bats eighth.
Apr 21 2022Story (head) is starting at second base and leading off Thursday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He passed concussion protocols after being hit in the helmet by a pitch Wednesday. Story is still looking for his first home run and first stolen base on the season. He has a 33.3 K% and 6.1 BB% through eight games. This is his first time leading off with the Red Sox.
Apr 20 2022Story passed the concussion protocols after being hit in the helmet by a pitch during Wednesday's loss to the Blue Jays, and manager Alex Cora expects the infielder to play Thursday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old is also undergoing some testing after the contest, but it appears he's avoided a concussion. Story remained in the game after being hit in the helmet by a 92-mph pitch during the third inning, and he may not end up missing any time despite the dangerous incident.
Apr 18 2022Story is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Twins, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox will kick off their first game of the week and final game of their series with Minnesota at 11:10 a.m. ET, so Story's absence from the lineup merely looks to be the result of the quick turnaround. The 29-year-old also recently overcame a bout with a non-COVID-19-related illness and made starts in four of the past five days, going a collective 5-for-16 at the plate. Christian Arroyo will step in for Story at second base.
Apr 13 2022Story went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Wednesday's 9-7 win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story, who overcame a suspected bout of food poisoning, was not expected to be in the starting lineup but woke up feeling much better than anticipated. He moved up to the three-hole, taking the spot normally reserved for shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who was given the day off. The newest Red Sock produced his first RBI of the season, capping off Boston's six-run fourth inning with a run-producing single. The second baseman had just one hit in eight at-bats during the Yankees series before falling ill.
Apr 12 2022Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Story (illness) is likely out for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Barring a dramatic turnaround in his condition leading up to Wednesday's 1:10 p.m. ET opening pitch, Story will wind up missing the entire series in Detroit and his fourth straight game overall. The fact that Story traveled with the team for the road trip is an encouraging sign, but the 29-year-old likely needs more time to regain strength after a case of the flu depleted him. Jonathan Arauz is the leading candidate to pick up another start at the keystone Wednesday.
Apr 11 2022Story (illness), who isn't available for Monday's game against the Tigers, hopes to be available Tuesday against Detroit, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story missed Sunday's game against the Yankees due to a non-COVID illness, and he won't be available to appear off the bench in Monday's series opener in Detroit. However, he's traveling with the team and has a chance to return to action following a two-game absence. Jonathan Arauz is starting at second base and batting eighth in Monday's game.
Apr 10 2022Story is not in the lineup Sunday against the Yankees due to a non-COVID illness, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The ailment isn't believed to be a serious concern, but it will hold Story out of the lineup for at least one contest. He should be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener in Detroit, while Jonathan Arauz starts in his place Sunday.
Mar 30 2022Story started at second base, batted sixth, and went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI in Wednesday's spring training game against the Braves. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story made his first appearance in a Red Sox uniform since he signed with the club last week. He had been expected to play this past weekend, but the 29-year-old left camp to attend the birth of a child. While he batted mostly third or cleanup last season with the Rockies, Red Sox manager Alex Cora envisions right-handed hitters Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez for those spots against right-handed starters, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. With lefty-hitting Alex Verdugo batting fifth, Cora can break up a run of righties. Story could slot higher in the order -- possibly second -- when the Red Sox face a lefty starter.
Mar 29 2022Manager Alex Cora said Story (personal) will play Wednesday in the Red Sox's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he didn't agree to his megadeal with Boston until March 20 and then didn't report to camp right away following the birth of his child, Story is behind the Red Sox's other position players as Opening Day approaches. Though Wednesday's game will mark Story's first game action, Cora expressed no concern about the 29-year-old's availability for the April 7 season opener versus the Yankees. Cora noted that Story is scheduled to play in spring games Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The heavy game load in the upcoming days should not only help Story make up for the competitive at-bats he's missed thus far during camp, but it'll also allow him to get comfortable at a new position. After playing exclusively at shortstop over his six-year career in Colorado, Story is expected to see most of his action at second base during his first season in Boston.
Mar 27 2022Story (personal) is expected to rejoin the Red Sox on Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been away from the team for the birth of his child, which in turn pushed back his debut with the team. Though the team doesn't have spring training game scheduled Monday, Story is expected to participate in an intrasquad contest, and he will likely debut in Grapefruit League action by the close of the week. Notably, manager Alex Cora said Story could receive extra days off early in the regular season as he gets fully ramped up.
Mar 25 2022Story will be away from camp for the next few days due to the birth of his child, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Previous reports indicated that Story would make his spring debut Saturday, but that will now be pushed back a few more days. His late signing with the Red Sox means he already didn't have much time to get up to speed by Opening Day, so it's possible he's eased into things with an extra off day or two at the beginning of the campaign.
Mar 20 2022Story agreed to a contract with the Red Sox on Sunday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Story will receive $140 million over six years with the Red Sox, and the deal includes an opt out after the 2025 season, which Boston can negate by picking up a seventh year for the contract. Xander Bogaerts has been locked in as Boston's shortstop since 2014 and will remain at the position, per Jim Bowden of The Athletic, though Story is viewed as the superior defender. Regardless of how the pair is positioned between shortstop and second base, the team now features one of the best middle infield pairings in the league. Story hit .251/.329/.471 with 24 home runs, 88 runs, 75 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 142 games last season in Colorado and will continue his career with Boston as its new second baseman.
Nov 17 2021Story officially declined the Rockies' $18.4 million qualifying offer Wednesday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As anticipated, Story will now become a free agent and should be one of the most sought-after hitters on the open market in a deep shortstop class. Story's fantasy outlook could be affected significantly by what team he ultimately signs with, but regardless of where he lands, he'll likely be headed for a downgrade in his projected batting average and power output while he moves on from the friendly hitting confines of Coors Field.
Nov 6 2021Story will decline the Rockies' qualifying offer, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies extended the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer as a formality. Story seems like a strong candidate to change organizations this offseason as the Rockies have been unable to surround him with quality players.
Oct 3 2021Story is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will head to the bench for Game 162 in what is likely his final contest with the Rockies. He has a .215/.329/.471 slash line with 24 homers, 75 RBI, 88 runs and 20 stolen bases in 595 plate appearances as he's poised to enter free agency in the offseason.
Oct 2 2021Story went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 9-7 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The star shortstop knocked in the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning single to help Colorado complete the comeback after being down by seven runs. Story also walked and stole second base in the seventh frame, giving him 20 thefts on the season. It's the third time in four years that he has reached the 20-20 mark; the lone exception was the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, when Story has well on pace to reach the milestone over a 162-game season.
Sep 29 2021Story went 4-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored in Wednesday's 10-5 win over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shortstop appears set to end the year on a hot run, as he's gone 7-for-11 with three walks, a home run and a double in his last three games. Story's hits Wednesday were all singles, but the four-hit effort lifted his slash line to .253/.331/.477 through 586 plate appearances. He's added 24 home runs, 19 stolen bases, 74 RBI and 88 runs scored as one of Colorado's best hitters even in a somewhat disappointing season by his standards.
Sep 28 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and doubled in the win Tuesday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shortstop doubled in the first inning before taking Patrick Corbin deep in the fifth inning for his 24th long ball of the year. It was his third multi-hit contest in his last eight contests and he didn't strike out for only the second time in 14 contests. On the season, his slash of .247/.325/.473 are all his lowest marks since the 2017 campaign.
Sep 25 2021Story is not in Saturday's lineup against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is hitting .244 with five home runs and two steals in 20 games this month. Brendan Rodgers will start at shortstop while Ryan McMahon handles the keystone and Colton Welker starts at the hot corner.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shortstop recorded his 19th steal of the season after reaching on a two-out single in the eighth inning. Story is now one shy of his third 20-steal campaign, and he had an impressive 15 in 59 contests during the abbreviated 2020 season. The 28-year-old owns a .249/.325/.479 slash line with 23 home runs, 72 RBI, 80 runs scored, five triples and 33 doubles in 548 plate appearances this year.
Sep 15 2021Story went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Tuesday's 5-4 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story kicked off the scoring for the Rockies after clobbering a solo home run to lead off the second inning. The long ball was his third over his last four games and his 22nd of the year as he's shown some recent improvements in the power department. Overall, it's been a bit of a down year offensively for Story in comparison to year's past. The 28-year-old has never finished a season with a BABIP under .330 and currently sits at a .288 BABIP through 128 games in 2021. He's slashing .247/.326/.478 with 59 extra-base hits, 69 RBI, 78 runs scored, 18 steals and 46:126 BB:K over 531 plate appearances.
Sep 11 2021Story went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-1 loss to Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story produced Colorado's lone run with his sixth-inning blast off Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler. It's the third time in five games Story has swatted a long ball, and he's added a triple and a double during a modest five-game hitting streak. The shortstop is slashing .249/.327/.476 with 21 homers, 68 RBI, 77 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 126 contests.
Sep 10 2021Story went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run scored in Friday's 11-2 win over Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shortstop had the first of back-to-back homers with C.J. Cron in the seventh inning. Story has now reached the 20-homer mark in all five full-length seasons he's played, and he had 11 in 59 contests during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. In 2021, he's had some struggles at the plate with a .249 batting average, but he's posted a .799 OPS with 67 RBI, 76 runs scored, 18 stolen bases and 32 doubles through 125 games.
Sep 7 2021Story is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story started the past 10 games after recovering from a leg injury and will receive a day off after posting a 1.047 OPS during that stretch. Brendan Rodgers and Garrett Hampson will work in the middle infield while Sam Hilliard starts in center field.
Sep 6 2021Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in the loss Monday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old took reliever Caleb Baragar deep for a two-run shot in the eighth inning, driving in teammate Brendan Rodgers in the process. The shortstop has been hot recently, hitting .313 with three home runs and six RBI over his last nine games. He is now up to 19 homers on the year.
Aug 31 2021Story went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story started off with a solo shot in the seventh and then followed it up with a two-run blast in the eighth to make it a 4-3 ballgame. His two homers would end up being the only run supply for the Rockies on Monday as he's now made it back-to-back multi-hit games. A popular trade candidate at this year's deadline, Story ended up staying in Colorado and is slashing .279/.374/.581 with five homers, 13 RBI, 20 runs scored and 7:22 BB:K in 25 games this month.
Aug 29 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a double, run and walk in Sunday's 5-0 triumph over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story reached base three times, walking in the third inning, doubling and scoring in the seventh and singling in the ninth. This was the All-Star shortstops second game back following a few games on the bench with a leg injury and the shortstop rebounded by breaking out of an 0-for-20 stretch encompassing his previous six games.
Aug 28 2021Story (leg) is starting Saturday against the Dodgers, Megan Garcia of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story didn't appear in Friday's series opener after he aggravated a leg injury Wednesday, but he'll start at shortstop and bat third Saturday. The 28-year-old was in a slump at the plate prior to his one-game absence, as he went 0-for-17 with a walk and six strikeouts across his last five appearances.
Aug 27 2021Story (leg) isn't in Friday's lineup against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story aggravated a leg injury in Wednesday's contest against the Cubs, and he'll be held out of Friday's lineup. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available off the bench, but Brendan Rodgers will shift to shortstop while Garrett Hampson starts at second base.
Aug 25 2021Manager Bud Black said Story left Wednesday's game against the Cubs because he aggravated a leg injury, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Black said Story expects to be fine, suggesting his exit from Wednesday's nightcap may have been purely precautionary. Story figures to be available for Friday's series opener in Los Angeles, but he should still be considered day-to-day until further updates.
Aug 23 2021Story is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After starting each of the past eight games and batting only .200 over that stretch, Story will get Monday off to clear his head. Brendan Rodgers will step in at shortstop Story.

Aug 14 2021Story (forearm) is batting third and playing shortstop Saturday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was omitted from Friday's lineup after taking a pitch to the forearm Thursday, but his appearance as a pinch hitter Friday suggested he was ready to play again. He's started off the month well, hitting .389 with two home runs, five doubles and six RBI in 11 games since the beginning of August.
Aug 13 2021Story (forearm) isn't starting Friday's game against the Giants, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story exited Thursday's game against San Francisco after he was hit by a pitch in the forearm, but the injury isn't believed to be serious. However, he'll be held out of the lineup for at least one game while Brendan Rodgers (hand) returns to action as the shortstop and Garrett Hampson starts at second base.
Aug 12 2021Story was removed from Thursday's game against the Giants as a result of being hit by a pitch in the forearm, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was hit by the pitch in the fourth inning, but he remained in the game for another plate appearance in the sixth frame. That suggests the injury isn't serious, which was confirmed by manager Bud Black after the game. Though the team may be cautious, it appears that Story should be able to return at some point during the team's weekend series against San Francisco.
Aug 9 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a run and also reached base on a hit by pitch Sunday in the Rockies' 13-8 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Story expressed disappointment with how the Rockies handled his situation leading up to the July 30 trade deadline, it hasn't stopped the star shortstop from raking. In his eight starts since the deadline, Story has recorded a hit in each contest, going a collective 13-for-30 (.433 average) with two home runs, five doubles, nine runs and six RBI. All but two of those games have come at Coors Field, so Story will likely be due for a downturn in production when the Rockies kick off a six-game road trip Tuesday in Houston.

Jul 30 2021Story was scratched from Friday's lineup against the Padres for rest purposes, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Brendan Rodgers will shift to shortstop while Connor Joe enters the lineup in left field.
Jul 29 2021Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and a walk in Wednesday's 8-7 loss to the Angels. Jul 11 2021Story is back in the starting lineup Sunday against the Padres after being scratched Saturday because of soreness, Daniel Guerrero of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was removed from Saturday's lineup due to lingering soreness from being hit by a pitch Friday. The shortstop appears to be feeling better Sunday, as he'll bat third during the series finale.
Jul 10 2021Story was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Padres due to soreness from being hit by a pitch Friday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was joined by Brendan Rodgers (illness) in being a late removal from Saturday's game. It doesn't sound like Story we'll miss extended time, but he can currently be considered questionable for Sunday's series finale.
Jul 8 2021Story went 1-for-5 with a single in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story reached on an infield single in the third and would end up stealing second, but he never came around to score. The stolen base was his 16th of the year and he's on pace to set a new career-best after successfully stealing 27 times in 2018. The 28-year-old is slashing .252/.324/.445 with 11 homers, 41 RBI, 40 runs scored and a 28:67 BB:K over 309 plate appearances. Story currently is seeing a career-low in slugging percentage and BABIP which explains his lower home run tally and middle-of-the-road numbers.
Jul 5 2021Story went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story launched a 448-foot solo home run to center field in the first inning and later drove in another run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth to knot the game at two apiece. He's now hit homers in back-to-back games and has five RBI over that span. The 28-year-old is slashing .256/.327/.455 with 11 homers, 41 RBI, 40 runs scored, 15 steals and a 27_65 BB:K over 300 plate appearances.
Jul 4 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story slammed a three-run homer off Genesis Cabrera to give Colorado the lead in the seventh inning. The blast netted all three of the Rockies' runs in the win. The 28-year-old produced his seventh multi-hit game over his last 15 appearances. He is slashing .255/.328/.445 with 39 runs and 39 RBI. The dual power-speed threat has 10 long balls and 14 stolen bases. He is one of 10 players that have double-digit home runs and steals this season.
Jun 30 2021Story is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since returning from the 10-day injured list June 10, Story has started in all 18 of the Rockies' games, slashing .269/.359/.507 with four home runs and six stolen bases over that stretch. He'll get a well-deserved breather in the series finale with Pittsburgh, paving the way for Brendan Rodgers to pick up a start at shortstop.
Jun 23 2021Story went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI Wednesday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story went yard in both the fourth and eighth innings to record his first multi-homer game of the season. The effort brought his total on the campaign to eight, three of which have come in his last three games. To this point, Story has delivered an underwhelming .259/.332/.444 line across 262 plate appearances, though he's also chipped in a very valuable 13 stolen bases.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has regained his speed a bit in the last week, notching five steals in his last seven games. The shortstop is up to a .256/.333/.411 slash line with five home runs, 28 RBI, 33 runs scored and 13 steals in 17 attempts. He's riding a six-game hitting streak (9-for-21) heading into Sunday's series finale versus Milwaukee.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story did a little bit of almost everything in an impressive performance at the plate. The star shortstop went 4-for-9 with three doubles, three RBI, five runs scored and a pair of steals in the three-game series versus San Diego. Jun 10 2021Story (elbow) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 11-4 loss to Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story missed just under two weeks with an elbow injury, but he was able to play the whole game Thursday. The shortstop has had a bit of a down year with a .257/.325/.422 slash line, five home runs, 23 RBI, 27 runs scored and eight stolen bases through 209 plate appearances. He should resume an everyday role as he looks to get back up to his established level of performance at the dish.
Jun 9 2021Manager Bud Black said Story (elbow) could be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Thursday's series finale in Miami, Kyle Newman of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies initially expected to get Story back from the IL for Tuesday's series opener with the Marlins, but he ultimately wasn't activated ahead of the contest. He'll remain on the shelf Wednesday, but Story took a notable step forward in his recovery from a right elbow strain by throwing on the field and taking batting practice over the past two days. If Story checks out fine once re-evaluated early Thursday, he'll likely slot back into the starting nine right away.
Jun 8 2021Manager Bud Black said Tuesday that Story (elbow) is "very close" to being activated from the injured list, Patrick Saunders reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was thought to be on track to return to the lineup Tuesday, but he was not activated ahead of the game against the Marlins. Despite the pushed back return, Black noted the shortstop went through a full throwing routine Tuesday, which indicates that a Wednesday activation from the IL is well within the realm of possibility. Story has been out since May 27 with inflammation in his right elbow.
Jun 4 2021Story (elbow) threw on the field Friday and remains on track to return from the injured list Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story is set to miss one day more than the minimum with his right elbow inflammation, as the Rockies don't play Monday, the first day he'd be eligible to return. Brendan Rodgers has handled shortstop in his absence, but Story should return to his everyday role once healthy.
Jun 1 2021Story (elbow) has received clean MRI results, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That the 28-year-old avoided a significant injury is a huge relief, as he's an elite player when healthy and should provide immense value down the stretch to the Rockies or whichever team that may trade for him. Barring any setbacks, the Rockies expect Story to return to action next Tuesday.
May 29 2021Story (elbow) will undergo additional testing Monday or Tuesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was placed on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation Saturday. Manager Bud Black said that Story's elbow injury is similar to the one he had in 2018, but the issue isn't as serious this time. He'll likely test his elbow next week, and a return timetable could be established based on how he feels afterward. Brendan Rodgers should serve as the primary shortstop in Story's absence.
May 27 2021Story (arm) is considered day-to-day after he left Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bud Black confirmed after Thursday's doubleheader that Story's removal from the nightcap was precautionary, but he added that throwing could be a concern in the coming days. If Story misses any additional time, Brendan Rodgers could fill in at shortstop.
May 23 2021Story went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Sunday's 4-3 win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story got the Rockies on the board with an RBI single in the second inning but save some theatrics for the end. He unloaded a 438-foot shot to dead center in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off on Stefan Crichton, giving him five homers this season. The 28-year-old shortstop has extra-base hits in three straight games and currently owns a .770 OPS.
May 14 2021Story went 2-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base in Friday's win over the Reds. He was also caught stealing. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story now has four steals in May -- twice as many has he had in April. This was his fifth multi-hit game of the current month and Story is looking more and more like the player we know, with his slash line sitting up at .287/.365/.478. He's a prime candidate to be traded at this year's deadline.
May 13 2021Story isn't starting Thursday's game against the Reds, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will get a breather after he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Thursday's nightcap against San Diego. Alan Trejo will start at shortstop and bat eighth.
May 12 2021Story went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in a 5-3 loss to San Diego in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and promptly added his fifth stolen base of the season. In the sixth, he reached on a single again and scored on a Ryan McMahon double. The 28-year-old shortstop is slashing .287/.361/.488 with four home runs, five stolen bases, 21 RBI and 22 runs scored through 36 games.
May 4 2021Story (finger) will start at shortstop and bat second in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was removed late in the Rockies' last game Sunday against the Astros after being hit by a pitch on his right index finger, but X-rays cleared him of any structural damage. After getting an extra day to recover from the injury when Monday's series opener with the Giants was postponed due to inclement weather, Story looks like he'll be available for both ends of Tuesday's twin bill.
May 2 2021Story's X-rays on his finger Sunday came back negative, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story left Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the eighth inning after he was hit by a pitch on his right index finger in the top half of the frame. However, early tests showed that the shortstop didn't suffer a fracture, and the team is optimistic about his status. If Story is forced to miss any additional time, Alan Trejo could see increased playing time.
May 1 2021Story went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI, three additional runs scored and a walk in the 14-6 win Saturday over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story marked up the score sheet Saturday, contributing to 14 runs scored by the Rockies. He hit his third home run of the season off Caleb Smith in the sixth inning. Story has scored seven runs over his last four games and he is slashing .283/.336/.495 in 110 plate appearances this year.
Apr 26 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and scored twice in a 12-2 win over the Phillies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story capped off a seven-run fourth inning by pimping a grand slam into the left-field seats for his second home run in three games. The 28-year-old rewarded his patient fantasy managers with a recent power surge after needing 19 games to hit his first long ball of the campaign. Story has been seeing the ball extremely well lately, as he's slashing .417/.429/.792 with two home runs, nine RBI and six runs scored over his last seven games.
Apr 23 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double Friday in a victory over Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Story is hitting a respectable .286/.320/.443 on the campaign, he entered Friday without a home run over his 66 at-bats. The start shortstop ended the power drought with a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning to put the Rockies on the board. Story has been among the league's top power-hitting shortstops since his first season in 2016, so there figures to be plenty more long balls off his bat as the season progresses.
Apr 15 2021Story isn't starting Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will get his first day off this year after he slashed .265/.308/.367 with four extra-base hits and four RBI to begin the season. Alan Trejo will receive his first major-league start at shortstop Thursday, batting eighth.
Apr 8 2021Story went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, two RBI and a run scored during Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was red hot at the plate Thursday, cranking an RBI double in the first inning, followed by an RBI triple in the second, both against Merrill Kelly. Despite somewhat of a slow start to the season, Story has the potential and versatility to prove himself as one of the top shortstops this season.
Mar 21 2021Story went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and one walk in Saturday's spring loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's power has been on full display this spring, and he put the Rockies on the board Saturday with a solo blast in the fourth inning. The shortstop has appeared in 10 Cactus League games this year and has gone 7-for-28 with four home runs, one double, seven RBI and nine strikeouts. Story has played on consecutive days just twice this spring, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. However, he'll occupy an everyday role in Colorado's lineup once the regular season gets underway.
Mar 5 2021Story went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and one strikeout in Friday's spring loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story was eased into action to begin spring training, but he batted second while playing shortstop in Friday's Cactus League matchup. He provided the team's only run production of the game with a 407-foot blast in the third inning. The 28-year-old enters the season as one of the league's top shortstops, but his counting stats could dip slightly in 2021 after Nolan Arenado was traded to the Cardinals during the offseason.
Sep 17 2020Story went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and another run scored during Thursday's loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story had a successful night at the plate, doubling and scoring against Julio Urias in the first inning, then leaving the yard against Adam Kolarek in the eighth. Unfortunately, the Rockies couldn't get it done at home against the Dodgers. On the season, Story leads Colorado with 11 home runs, 58 hits and a .374 on-base percentage.
Sep 9 2020Story went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story took Zach Davies yard in the first inning for his 10th home run of the season. It was his first homer since Aug. 24, though he has stolen eight bases in that 13-game span. Story has delivered across the box score all season, as he's maintained a .292/.367/.554 line with 34 runs scored and 22 RBI across 188 plate appearances.
Sep 7 2020Story went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a double in Monday's 1-0 loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has been a big source of speed lately, with four stolen bases in his last five games. He now leads the majors with 12 steals. The shortstop also has nine homers, 32 runs scored and 20 RBI while slashing .294/.372/.544 through 40 contests.
Sep 6 2020Story went 0-for-3 with two stolen bases and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both times Story got on base, he stole second, but he didn't come around to score either time. The shortstop has cooled off in general lately, going just 8-for-32 (.250) with two RBI and three runs scored in his last eight games. He has 11 steals, nine homers, 20 RBI and 32 runs scored in 39 contests this season.
Sep 2 2020Story went 3-for-4 with a double, a run, an RBI, a stolen base and a walk during Wednesday's 9-6 win over San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old received the day off Tuesday since he was 0-for-8 with six strikeouts over the previous two contests, but he provided significant production in his return to the lineup. Story has a .306/.383/.576 slash line with nine homers, 31 runs, 20 RBI and nine stolen bases through 36 games.
Sep 1 2020Story isn't in Tuesday's lineup against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story has had a rough stretch at the plate recently as he's gone 0-for-8 with six strikeouts over the past two games. He'll get a day off Tuesday with Garrett Hampson starting at shortstop.
Aug 30 2020Story went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Saturday's win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story continues to be one of the most consistent bats in the Rockies lineup and extended his hitting streak to nine games. He has posted three multi-hit games in that stretch and is hitting .343 with a 1.068 OPS and two homers in that nine-game span.
Aug 26 2020Story went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases in Tuesday's win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story produced his 11th multi-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to six games, a span in which he is hitting .320 with a 1.090 OPS, two homers, five extra-base hits, three RBI and three stolen bases.
Aug 24 2020Story went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story gave the Rockies an early lead with a solo shot off Diamondbacks starter Taylor Clarke in the first inning. That was Story's ninth homer of the year. He's batting .297/.362/.602 with 18 RBI, 26 runs scored and five stolen bases across 29 games. He's gone 6-for-21 (.286) with two homers, three RBI and four runs scored during his current five-game hitting streak.
Aug 22 2020Story went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story produced his 16th RBI of the season with a single to right field that scored Drew Butera in the top of the sixth inning, and that was the biggest highlight for a Colorado offense that went 4-for-31 as a team against the Dodgers' pitching staff. Story, who rode a nine-game hitting streak earlier this month, is hitting .274 with a .834 OPS in 84 August at-bats.
Aug 17 2020Story went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a 2-1 loss to the Astros on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story provided the Rockies' lone run with a third-inning blast off Astros starter Brandon Bielak. It was one of just two hits in the game for the Rockies. Story has hit safely in nine straight games, and he's now batting .326 with seven homers, 15 RBI and 21 runs scored through 22 contests.
Aug 15 2020Story went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a triple in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story put good lumber on all three of his hits, but his teammates were unable to bring him around each time. The shortstop is on a seven-game hitting streak, during which he's gone 13-for-32 (.406) with five RBI, seven runs scored and two stolen bases. Story is hitting .321/.396/.617 with six homers, four steals, 12 RBI and 19 runs in 20 games overall.
Aug 11 2020Story went 2-for-5 with an RBI single, a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 8-7 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story knocked in Garrett Hampson with a single in the eighth inning, then scored on a Charlie Blackmon double to ignite a six-run rally. Story also had a single and his fourth stolen base of the year in the fifth inning. The shortstop has hit safely in four straight games (6-for-17) with a homer, two steals, four RBI and six runs scored in that span.
Aug 6 2020Story went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story took Wandy Peralta deep in the sixth inning to record his fifth home run of the campaign. He had entered the game in the midst of a cold spell, collecting just one hit in his last 16 plate appearances. However, that's done little to undo his strong work at the dish, as he's hitting .295/.404/.636 in 52 plate plate appearances to this point.
Aug 1 2020Story went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's fourth-inning homer stretched the Rockies' lead to 5-1 at the time. The shortstop has hit safely in six straight games. He's up to four homers, five RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases in seven games. He's likely to continue to put up big numbers in the top half of the Rockies' batting order.
Jul 26 2020Story went 2-for-2 with two home runs, three RBI and two walks in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's two-run blast in the fourth inning was his first of the young 2020 season and he followed it with the second just two innings later. The 27-year-old shortstop has been a fantasy stud from the last few seasons and that should continue to be the case in a shortened 2020 campaign as well.
Mar 29 2020Story had a .250/.321/.375 slash line with three doubles and one stolen base over 10 games before the suspension of spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cactus League play was uneventful for the 27-year-old prior to baseball operations being halted, though there was an offseason development as he inked a two-year, $27.5 million deal in January to buy out his final two years of arbitration. Story had a .917 OPS with 35 homers, 85 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 145 games in 2019, and once play resumes he's poised for another season as Colorado's starting shortstop.
Jan 24 2020Story signed a two-year, $27.5 million contract with the Rockies on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This deal will buy out the final two seasons of arbitration for the shortstop. He put together another strong year at the dish in 2019, slashing .294/.363/.554 with 35 home runs, 85 RBI and 23 stolen bases in 145 contests.
Sep 29 2019Story is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will just be getting a routine off day with little on the line for the 70-91 Rockies in the season finale. Garrett Hampson will handle leadoff and shortstop duties Sunday while Story presumably wraps up his 2019 campaign with a .294/.363/.554 slash line to go with 35 home runs and 23 steals in 145 games.
Sep 28 2019Story went 2-for-5 with a walkoff solo home run in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's 35th homer of the year came off Brewers reliever Matt Albers, completing the comeback win for the Rockies. Story has added 23 stolen bases, 85 RBI and 111 runs scored in 144 games this season. Unfortunately, he added three strikeouts in the contest -- the shortstop has posted a 26.5 strikeout percentage to offset some of his otherwise stellar year.
Sep 25 2019Story is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story will head to the bench after starting the past 10 games, going 12-for-38 (.316) with four home runs and a steal over that stretch. Garrett Hampson is starting at shortstop and hitting leadoff in his place.
Sep 17 2019Story went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and a walk Monday in the Rockies' 9-4 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Story's 33rd home run of the season punctuated a five-run inning for the Rockies, who rolled to their fourth consecutive win. The shortstop will hit leadoff in Tuesday's contest and looks poised to hold down that spot in the lineup for the rest of the season with manager Bud Black having seemingly settled on Charlie Blackmon as the team's cleanup batter.
Sep 14 2019Story went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI in Friday's 10-8 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The slugging shortstop has 32 homers, 20 steals, 79 RBI and a career-high 104 runs on the year to go with his robust .297/.356/.554 slash line. Story has 14 games left on the schedule -- eight of them at home in Coors Field -- to match or exceed the career-high 37 home runs he hit last year.
Sep 12 2019Story is not in Thursday's lineup against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He had started 17 games in a row, hitting .296 with two home runs and two steals over that stretch. Garrett Hampson will start at shortstop and lead off.

Jul 15 2018Story went 1-for-4 with a walkoff solo home run to send the Rockies to a 4-3 victory over the Mariners on Sunday.Story continued his recent home-run barrage in dramatic fashion with this game-ending blast off Nick Vincent. That gives him four long balls in his last seven games and 20 on the season in what has been a phenomenal first half for the 25-year-old All-Star, who is now slashing a robust .292/.353/.557 through 366 at-bats.
Jul 14 2018Story went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and four RBI to help pace Colorado to Friday's 10-7 win over the Mariners.Story's monster season continues, as this third-inning blast off Christian Bergman marked his 19th long ball of the season and brought his OPS to a sterling .906. After hitting just .239 last year, Story has rebounded in the average department with a .291 mark through 358 at-bats. He's also got a solid .353 on-base percentage, and he's swiped 12 bases in 16 attempts for good measure, so there really isn't anything Story hasn't done in the first half of the season as he looks headed for a career-best campaign.
Jul 12 2018Story stayed hot Thursday against the Diamondbacks by going 1-for-3 with his 18th home run of the season.Though Story's streak of multi-hit performances came to an end, he still didn't disappoint as he sent a Randall Delgado offering 407 feet to right field for another long ball. He and the Rockies will close out the first half with a home series against the Mariners that gets underway Friday.
Jul 12 2018Story went 2-for-4 with a double, run and stolen base Wednesday in the Rockies' 19-2 win over the Diamondbacks.Story actually generated one of the more modest stat lines on a night the Rockies fell one run shy of matching a franchise-best total, but the shortstop has probably been the most consistently productive hitter in the lineup over the last few weeks. He turned in his sixth consecutive two-hit performance Wednesday and has recorded multiple hits in 10 of his last 13 starts. Dating back to the beginning of June, Story is slashing .357/.388/.615 with six home runs, four steals, 23 RBI and 19 runs in 35 games.
Jul 8 2018Story went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 6-4 loss to Seattle. It was just Story's seventh game in the month of July, but he already has five multi-hit outings with three extra-base hits. He raised his season slash line to .284/.348/.531 in 341 at-bats. Story also has 17 home runs and 11 stolen bases, giving him strong fantasy value among middle infielders.
Jul 8 2018Story (foot) is back in the starting lineup Sunday against the Mariners.Story was hit by a pitch Friday night, and ended up getting scratched from Saturday's lineup due to what was described as a foot bruise. The injury doesn't appear to be a long-term concern, however, as Story will return to action after just one day on the shelf. Story, who is one of just four players in the National League with 60 or more RBI entering Sunday, will resume his regular role at shortstop and bat cleanup in the order.
Jul 7 2018Story was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the Mariners, Nick Groke of The Athletic Denver reports. As Groke further reports, Story was hit by a pitch Friday night. The official diagnosis for the 25-year-old is a right foot bruise, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Pat Valaika will take over at shortstop and bat seventh in the Rockies' reshuffled lineup.
Jun 28 2018Story went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's 9-8 win over the Giants.Story's June batting average is up to .327 (34-for-104) with 19 RBI and five homers. The 6-foot-1 shortstop has 16 home runs on the season and is among NL leaders with 58 RBI. He's also chipped in 10 stolen bases and an OPS at .850.
Jun 24 2018Story went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Marlins.Story moved back in to a tie with Reds infielder Eugenio Suarez for the NL-lead with 58 RBI Sunday. The stolen base was his 10th of the year, his first time reaching double-digits in that category. The 25-year-old shortstop owns a solid .264/.332./.518 slash line after batting .239 and leading the NL with 191 strikeouts in 2017.
Jun 20 2018Story went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Mets.Story was the middle part of a back-to-back-to-back sequence in the third inning that helped turned a tie game into a four-run Colorado lead in the eventual 10-8 win. The 25-year-old has been red-hot all June, slashing .357/.395/.686 on the month. With 16 homers, he's on pace to top his personal-best 27 that he mashed in his rookie campaign in 2016.
Jun 13 2018Story went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI in Wednesday's win over the Phillies.Story has been absolutely red-hot of late, as he's notched five straight multi-hit performances and has tallied multiple extra-base hits in three of those. The 25-year-old is hitting an even .400 in June, and now sports a .270/.344/528 slash line on the year to go along with the 14 home runs and NL-leading 49 RBI.
Jun 9 2018Story went 3-for-4 with two two-run home runs Saturday against the Diamondbacks.Story blasted home runs in each of his first two at-bats, both of which came off Matt Koch. He now has 14 for the season, three of which have come in his last two games. He continues to take advantage of Coors Field as he has 12 home runs there and is slugging .784 in 97 at-bats.
Jun 8 2018Story went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double in the Rockies' 9-4 loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday. It was the 12th homer of the year for the 25-year-old shortstop, who accounted for half of his team's runs in this contest with a two-run shot off Diamondbacks starter Zack Greinke in the fifth inning. His .247/.328/.489 slash line puts him right around his career averages through 235 at-bats, and he's on pace for 31 long balls, which would top the career-best total of 27 he posted in his rookie season of 2016 if he's able to maintain the pace.
Jun 3 2018Story went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 12-4 loss to the Dodgers. The shortstop has put together a solid homestand, posting a .281/.361/.469 slash line over his last eight games with a homer, four RBI, four runs and a 4:6 BB:K. Story will need to continue making hay when he's at Coors Field, however, as his home-road splits have become particularly tilted in 2018 -- he carries a 1.162 through 91 at-bats at home, but only a .552 mark away from the Rockies' extremely friendly confines.
May 20 2018Story went 3-for-5 with a double, a run and a pair of RBI in the Rockies' 9-5 defeat to the Giants on Sunday.Story now has nine hits in his last 22 at-bats to bring his batting average up to .250 -- exactly the mark he's posted for his career over 288 games. While that means the average probably shouldn't be expected to deviate too much from that throughout the season, the 27-year-old doesn't need to be competing for batting titles in order to continue to provide excellent fantasy value, as he's now got an .847 OPS to go along with 10 homers, 35 RBI and seven stolen bases over 172 at-bats this year.
May 12 2018Story went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, two home runs and four RBI in Saturday's win over the Brewers. He accounted for all of the scoring in this one with three extra-base hits off Brewers starter Brent Suter. Story is now up to 10 home runs and ranks third in the National League with 32 RBI, behind Javier Baez and A.J. Pollock. The 25-year-old has also already matched last year's stolen-base total with seven. While the strikeouts remain high, Story is more than making up for the batting-average drain with what he's doing in the counting stats.
May 12 2018Story went 1-for-4 with a triple and four RBI in Friday's extra-inning loss to the Brewers. It was Story's third triple on the season, as well as his 17th extra-base hit. While Story's .223 batting average is a bit low, his eight home runs and 28 RBI both fall within the top-five among MLB shortstops. It also bears mentioning that he's 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts.
May 10 2018Story went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Thursday against the Brewers.Story hasn't been hitting well to start the season, and is hitless in six of his past ten games. However, he did manage to hit his eighth home run of the season Thursday in the second inning off Jhoulys Chacin. Most of his production has come at home or against left-handed pitchers this season, as he has slugged .783 and .571 respectively in those scenarios as opposed to a .474 slugging percentage overall this season.
May 8 2018Story went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, triple and two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Angels.Story entered the game in the midst of a 3-for-27 stretch, but he broke out of it with his first multiple extra-base hit game of the season. The .233 average and 31.1 strikeout percentage continue to leave something to be desired, but his seven home runs and 23 RBI continue to lead all NL shortstops.
May 2 2018Story went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's win over the Cubs. The homer was his seventh of the year, though he also whiffed twice to run his strikeout rate to 31.3%. He's struck out at least once in eight straight games, but the 25-year-old should still remain a solid run-producer nonetheless. His seven home runs and 20 RBI are both tops among shortstops in the NL.
Apr 24 2018Story went 1-for-3 with a grand slam and a walk in Tuesday's win over the Padres.Story has now recorded at least one hit in seven of the last eight games, bringing his average up to .250. The home run was his sixth of the year, and the four RBI push his season total to 18, which is good for third-most among all shortstops in the majors. Story is so far proving to be a formidable run producer.
Apr 22 2018Story went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and run scored Sunday against the Cubs.Story had a quiet weekend series at Coors Field, but corrected that with his showing on Sunday. Most of his damage came off left-handed starter Jose Quintana, improving his slash line to .276/.382/.552 in 29 at-bats against them this season. Though that is a small sample, he has performed similarly against them in the first few seasons of his career.
Apr 18 2018Story went 2-for-4 in Tuesday's win over the Pirates, slashing a double and stealing a base.Story's double came off of Pirates' starter Trevor Williams, and was his third on the season. The stolen base is the focal news, though, as Story is now 4-0 is steal attempts on the year, and already halfway to his 2016 total of eight (which took him 97 games to do). It's encouraging that the young shortstop has had back-to-back multihit games, but he's still sitting at a .217 average and .299 on-base percentage, due in large part to his 35.0 percent strikeout rate.
Apr 10 2018Story went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a stolen base in the Rockies' 5-2 defeat to the Padres on Tuesday.Story provided all the offense for Colorado against San Diego with his first-inning homer off Joey Lucchesi marking his third of the season. He got off to a slow start and was hitting just .214 coming into this game but he's now left the yard in three of his last five contests, so fantasy owners will hope that's a sign he's getting set to pump his average up somewhere closer to the .251 mark he's posted for his career. Even if Story doesn't fully regain the form of his breakout 2016 that saw him hit .272 and tally a lofty .908 OPS in 372 at-bats, he can still act as a solid source of power at shortstop, as he showed on Tuesday.
Apr 7 2018Story went 1-for-4 with a solo homer and a walk in Saturday's extra-innings win over the Braves.Story extended the Rockies' lead in the fourth inning, sending a 2-1 offering from Braves starter Anibal Sanchez into the left-field bleachers. This is the second straight game in which the young shortstop has homered, though he added another strikeout to his ledger and is still hitting just .176 on the young season.
Apr 6 2018Story went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-3 loss to the Braves. The homer was his first of the season. Story also struck out twice and is only 5-for-30 to begin the season, but anyone with fantasy shares in the shortstop knows what to expect at this point -- strong power numbers, but a lot of empty swings and a batting average that even Coors Field can't keep afloat.
Apr 3 2018Story went 1-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's victory over San Diego.Story has struggled out of the gate, collecting just two hits in 16 at-bats thus far (both singles), but to his credit he hasn't struck out in his last two games. The 25-year-old fanned seven times in his first two starts (nine at-bats), leading to a drop from fourth to seventh in the order. The steal is nice to see as Story swiped all of seven bags last year, and the offensive production should pick up once he starts playing in Coors Field. He's a streaky player -- you'll want to stick around for the highs.
Feb 21 2018Manager Bud Black said he's intrigued by the thought of Story hitting fourth this season, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. This obviously hinges on Story showing he's improved his brutal contact issues from 2017, as he struck out in 34.4 percent of his plate appearances while leading all of baseball with 191 strikeouts last season. He took part in an intense offseason workout program and focused on simplifying his approach at the plate in the offseason, which he's hoping will help him return to his rookie-year form (.272/.341/.567 with 27 homers in 97 games). The 25-year-old should hold fantasy value either way given his impressive pop and sneaky speed at the shortstop position, but hitting in the heart of a solid Rockies' lineup would provide a nice boost to his counting stats. Until Cactus League action picks up and we get a look at how Story's adjustments are paying off, he should continued to be viewed as a risky, albeit high-upside bounce-back candidate at what should be a significantly discounted price from a year ago.

Feb 18 2018Story said Saturday that he took part in an strenuous offseason workout program and is focusing on simplifying his approach at the plate during the upcoming season, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. "I feel great, I can't wait to get back into it again," said Story. "Baseball is a game of adjustments. It's no secret that I struggled at the beginning of last year, but I think there was an ends to that. I used that. I learned."After busting on the scene as a rookie with 27 home runs and a .272/.341/.567 across 97 games, Story entered the 2017 campaign with massive expectations, but ultimately failed to deliver. Though Story closed the season on a high note with 15 extra-base hits in September, his extreme contact woes -- he led the National League with 191 strikeouts -- proved to be his undoing, as the shortstop mustered a disappointing .239/.308/.457 slash line in 555 plate appearances. Rather than overhauling his swing this offseason in an attempt to generate more contact, Story has instead turned his attention to improving his patience at the plate in order to identify pitches he can drive. Story's performance early on during Cactus League play may offer more insight into whether or not his adjustments are paying off, but for the time being, he should be viewed as a risky, albeit high-upside bounce-back candidate.
Oct 1 2017Story is not in the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers, Jenny Cavnar of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports.Story snapped his seven-game hitting streak Saturday with his 0-for-4 showing and will now get the day off for the final game of the regular season. Pat Valaika will draw the start at shortstop, batting seventh.
Sep 27 2017Story went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs during Wednesday's win over Miami.Story now has seven RBI through his past two games and is up to a respectable 23 homers, 80 RBI and 65 runs for the campaign. While he clearly failed to duplicate his excellent pace from last season, Story's counting statistics have been serviceable in the majority of fantasy settings.
Sep 15 2017Story (hamstring) is in Friday's lineup against the Padres, Jenny Cavnar of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports.Story was forced to exit Thursday's game with a hamstring cramp, but the shortstop won't miss any additional time as he's back in the lineup for the series opener against San Diego on Friday. He is currently riding a six-game hitting streak, going 8-for-24 with two home runs and four RBI over that span.
Sep 14 2017Story was removed from Thursday's loss to the Diamondbacks with a cramp in his right hamstring, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Story did not seem concerned about his health following Thursday's game, so as long as he is only dealing with cramping, he will have a chance to return to action for the Rockies' next game Friday against the Padres. Story went 1-for-3 Thursday prior to exiting, extending his hitting streak to six games.
Sep 10 2017Story went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and three RBI during Saturday's win over the Dodgers. The shortstop is putting together a respectable push of late with 10 doubles, two homers, 11 RBI, five runs and an .857 OPS through his past 15 games. While it's been a mediocre-at-best season from Story, there are still plenty of settings where he's a solid option, and maintaining his current pace through the end of the season would be a boon to his final stat line.
Sep 8 2017Story is out of the lineup Friday against the Dodgers, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.Heading into Friday, Story had collected at least one hit in three consecutive games. His recent (albeit short) stint of success at the plate lifted his batting average to a still-underwhelming mark of .227. He'll give way to Alexi Amarista at shortstop Friday.
Sep 5 2017Story went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Giants.Story took southpaw Ty Blach deep in the fourth inning for his 19th long ball. Nine of those home runs have come against left-handed pitching even though the shortstop has almost three times as many plate appearances against righties. He has come back down to earth with a .225/.302/.424 line after slashing .272/.341/.567 as a rookie last year, but still holds value thanks in part to playing his home games at the league's most hitter-friendly venue.
Sep 4 2017Story is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Story will get the day off after starting 19 straight games at shortstop, going 17-for-66 (.258) with three homers over that span. Ian Desmond will take over for Story at shortstop Monday, and he could continue to lose playing time to Desmond down the stretch with Gerardo Parra and Carlos Gonzalez swinging hot bats in the outfield.
Aug 17 2017Story went 3-for-4 with two homers, six RBI and a walk in Wednesday's win over the Braves.Story played a key role in Colorado's 17-2 thrashing of the Braves, as he produced more than a third of the runs while recording his first multi-homer game of the season. He also struck out for the 19th straight game, leaving his strikeout rate at an ugly 35.9, though his 31.3 percent strikeout rate last season ultimately didn't stop him from posting a .909 OPS with 27 homers. Story will look to keep things rolling, as he now has three bombs in his last two games -- and 18 on the season -- after having just one in his previous 14 contests.
Aug 13 2017Story is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Story has scuffled at the plate for the majority of the 2017 season and has shown no signs of a turnaround during the month of August. The young shortstop is hitting just .129/.229/.129 in his last nine games and will give way to Pat Valaika as the Rockies close out their weekend series against Vance Worley and the Marlins.
Aug 5 2017Story is out of Saturday's lineup against the Phillies, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports.Story is hitting just .156 with a 38.8 percent strikeout rate over his last 45 at-bats. Pat Valaika will start at shortstop and hit eighth.
Jul 30 2017Story is not in the lineup for the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Nationals.Although he's been improving at the plate lately, Story struggled in the matinee game Sunday, fanning three times in a hitless performance. He'll head to the bench for the nightcap, allowing Pat Valaika to log a start at shortstop.
Jul 29 2017Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer Saturday against the Nationals.Story smashed his 15th bomb of the season to give the Rockies a second-inning lead they'd never relinquish. He's left the yard four times over his last eight games, and although his batting average leaves much to be desired, his overall July performance could be the sign of an improved second half of the season.
Jul 23 2017Story went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk and another run scored Sunday against the Pirates.Story's home run was one of five mashed by the home team in this 13-3 blowout. The 24-year-old shortstop has hit 23 of his 40 career homers at Coors Field, which is actually a pretty even split compared to most of his teammates in Colorado.
Jul 19 2017Story went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, a triple, three RBI and three runs during Wednesday's win over San Diego. It's been a disappointing campaign for Story, as he's sporting an underwhelming .235/.312/.422 slash line. Additionally, his 12 homers, 43 RBI and 38 runs are well behind the totals he posted during his rookie year last season. Still, Coors Field can be a huge fantasy boost, and Story owns the potential to be a difference maker going forward.
Jul 14 2017Story is not in the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Mets, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Story hit just .224/.303/.396 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI during the first half of 2017. His power is evident, but he hasn't been able to get on base regularly, and striking out in 35.2 percent of his plate appearances doesn't exactly create confidence for fantasy owners. Pat Valaika will start at short while batting seventh in his place during Friday's contest.
Jul 9 2017Story is out of Sunday's lineup against the White Sox.Pat Valaika will start at shortstop and hit sixth. Story has been a pretty big disappointment this season, and while he is hitting .265 over his last 25 games, his 36.5 percent strikeout rate and .386 slugging percentage over that stretch do not inspire confidence.
Jul 5 2017Story is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Reds, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Story has just a .488 OPS over the past 14 games, so he'll head to the bench for a night off. Pat Valaika will take over at shortstop for the evening.
Jun 25 2017Story is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.Story continues to scuffle at the plate this season, slashing just .224/.309/.414 on the season. He'll get the day off with Pat Valaika drawing the start at shortstop.
Jun 16 2017Story is not in the lineup Friday against the Giants, Jenny Cavnar of ROOT Sports reports.Story will get the day off after starting each of the last five games at shortstop. The Rockies will go with Alexi Amarista in his place, and Amarista will bat seventh against the Giants' Jeff Samardzija.
Jun 10 2017Story is out of the lineup for Saturday's game with the Cubs, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.Story will get a day for the first time since May 28 with Alexi Amarista taking his place at shortstop. The 24-year-old has not started this year the same way he did in 2016, but he is swinging a better bat as of late, bumping up his season averages to .208/.307/.411 with eight home runs and 22 RBI.
Jun 8 2017Story was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Thursday against the Cubs during the Rockies' 4-1 victory.Story's struggles continued into Thursday, evidenced by the fact he could not put the ball in play. If there's a positive to take away from the evening, Story saw 25 pitches at the plate across his four at-bats. While Story's playing time isn't necessarily in jeopardy, he is slashing .212/.309/.418.
Jun 4 2017Story was 2-for-4 with two RBI Sunday in a 3-1 win against the Padres. It's still not the rookie campaign that had everyone talking, but Story is now 9-for-27 in his last seven games and looking like he's coming around at least a little bit. His .207 batting average is an eyesore and his .731 OPS is not much better. The 24-year-old will still be the everyday shortstop for Colorado for the foreseeable future.
May 28 2017Story is not in the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals, Jenny Cavnar of Root Sports Rocky Mountain reports.Story has started all four games since his Wednesday return from a shoulder injury, but will give way to the left-handed hitting Alexi Amarista on Sunday afternoon. Since rejoining the fold, Story is 4-for-14 with two doubles and a home run, collecting a base knock in each of those starts.
May 25 2017Story went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Thursday's extra-innings loss to Philadelphia.Story has recorded an extra-base hit in each of his two games since returning from a shoulder injury that required a stint on the disabled list. Between the injury and a slow start, it's been an underwhelming fantasy run to date, and Story currently sports a disappointing .188/.307/.427 slash line. Playing his home games at hitter-friendly Coors Field is a great virtual boost, and Colorado has six straight home games on deck.
May 24 2017Story will start at shortstop and bat seventh Wednesday against the Phillies, Ben Harris of Phillies.com reports.Story was activated from the disabled list ahead of Tuesday's contest, but didn't see the field. The Rockies were likely just being cautious in holding Story out, so now that he's back in action Wednesday, the 24-year-old looks primed to assume an everyday role going forward, despite his rough start to the season. Alexi Amarista and Pat Valaika will see their at-bats fall by the wayside with Story in the fold.
May 23 2017Story (shoulder) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Phillies, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. While Story was activated from he disabled list ahead of Tuesday's contest with the Phillies, Alexi Amarista will draw the start at shortstop over him. The Rockies are likely being cautious with the 24-year-old, so look for him to slot back into the lineup for Wednesday's contest.
May 23 2017Story (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Tuesday. This was pretty much expected after Bud Black hinted at Story rejoining the Rockies sometime during their four-game series with the Phillies. The 24-year-old was slashing just .180/.289/.396 before landing on the DL, so he'll look to turn things around now that he's healthy again. He should immediately reclaim his duties as the everyday shortstop from Pat Valaika and Alexi Amarista. Jeff Hoffman, who made a spot start for the Rockies on Monday, was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
May 22 2017Story (shoulder) will likely be activated from the disabled list during the Rockies' four-game series with the Phillies this week, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Manager Bud Black refused to cite a specific activation date, but he made it clear in a Riddler-esque statement that Story would be activated while they were in the City of Brotherly Love. "Story loves the Liberty Bell. He loves Ben Franklin. He might not love it all four days. But he loves it." More information on this front should become available in the coming days. Prior to getting injured, the young shortstop batted just .180 with 48 strikeouts in 33 games, although he did bash six home runs and six doubles in that span and has looked impressive at the plate during his rehab assignment. Once he returns to action, he'll likely supplant Pat Valaika and Alexi Amarista for regular playing time at shortstop.
May 18 2017Story (shoulder) will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The shortstop could return if he has a successful few days with the Isotopes. Story has been a depressing tale in 2017, with a .180/.289/.396 line in 128 plate appearances, though he's sustained a bit of his 2016 power with six home runs.
May 17 2017Story (shoulder) expects to perform his normal pregame workout routine Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The power-hitting shortstop began taking dry swings Tuesday and also fielded groundballs, both signs that he's on the upswing of his recovery process. Story also commented that he feels "pretty much back to normal," so as long as Wednesday's program goes off without a hitch, a brief rehab stint could be on tap sometime in the coming days.
May 16 2017Story (shoulder) took dry swings Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Story tested his range of motion by practicing his swing under the watchful eye of the Rockies' training staff. At this point in time, the club has yet to indicate when Story is expected to return, but more information should become available as he increases his level of activity. While Story is out, look for Pat Valaika to remain at shortstop.
May 11 2017Story was placed on the DL on Thursday with a strained left shoulder, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Story was withheld from Wednesday's lineup, and it would appear that his shoulder injury was the contributing factor behind his absence. Story's season has gotten off to a slow start, as he's slashing .180/.289/.396 and owns a dismal 37.5 percent K-rate. The Rockies have yet to elaborate on the severity of Story's injury, but more information should become available soon. With Story on the disabled list, look for Pat Valaika and Alexi Amarista to see time at shortstop.
May 10 2017Story is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Story played in both games of Tuesday's doubleheader, going a combined 2-for-7 with a run scored, an RBI, one walk and two strikeouts. The 24-year-old's strikeout total is now up to 48 in 128 plate appearances this season and his infield flyball rate is up at 20 percent, but at least Story's walking at a good clip and he continues to make hard contact when he does put bat to ball.
May 4 2017Story is not in the lineup Thursday against the Padres. After starting all but one of the Rockies' first 27 games, Story will head to the bench for the second straight contest as Alexi Amarista gets the nod at shortstop in his stead. There hasn't been any indication of an injury, but it should be something to monitor moving forward. It could just be to clear the young shortstop's head -- as he owns a meager .170/.271/.404 slash line through 94 at-bats this season -- though more should be known after the contest.
May 3 2017Story is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres, Jenny Cavnar of Root Sports reports. After starting each of the last 18 games for the Rockies, Story will head to the bench as Alexi Amarista fills in at shortstop. The 24-year-old is off to a slow start at the plate this season -- slashing .170/.271/.404 across 27 games -- so hopefully the day off will help him straighten things out.
Apr 29 2017Story went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Saturday against the Diamondbacks.Although the strikeouts continue to pile up for the young shortstop, he's also continually flashing his prodigious power. Story's batting average is currently residing at a lowly .184 mark, but he also holds a .226 ISO, meaning that his power should continue to play up even if his average dips a bit from last season.
Apr 27 2017Story went 0-for-3 with a run during Thursday's loss to Washington. Now sporting a .175/.267/.375 slash line through 90 plate appearances to start the season, Story stands out as one of the biggest early-season bust candidates going. Young players often endure plenty of peaks and valleys early in their careers, through, and Story's monstrous showing last season probably affords him a little longer leash than most. On the flip side, this might also prove to be a buy-low point. He does have the benefit of calling Coors Field home, after all.
Apr 16 2017Story went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Giants. It's been night and day for Story compared to his April in 2016. His three-strikeout clunker Sunday moves him down to a slash line of .114/.264/.250 in 53 plate appearances. It's still early, and Story has been rather streaky in his young career, but he'll need to reduce his lofty 37.7 percent strikeout rate in order to turn things around. The 24-year-old is showing why he was somewhat of a risky early-round pick in drafts. There's plenty of time for him to turn it around, but now would be a good time to see if his owner is panicking.
Apr 14 2017Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Giants. His fourth-inning blast off Madison Bumgarner was his first homer of the season. Story's April so far in 2017 has been a far cry from last year's, as he's slashing just .143/.268/.314 through 11 games, but Thursday's dinger might have been just what he needed to get going.
Apr 11 2017Story is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Padres.Story will get a regular day of rest Tuesday as Cristhian Adames takes over at shortstop. The young shortstop is off to a slow start this season, hitting 4-for-27 (.148) with three runs and one stolen base through eight games.
Apr 5 2017Story went 1-for-2 with three walks and a pair of walks in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Brewers. It's nowhere near the start Story got off to last season, but Story is continuing to be a force in the middle of the Rockies lineup. Although he hasn't logged an RBI yet through two games, one major positive is the K:BB the 24-year-old holds through two games. He only struck out once in the first game of the season and didn't whiff a single time Tuesday, leaving his K:BB at 1:3 heading into Wednesday's bout. It's early, but Story's improved approach at the plate could help him amass an even better season than his stellar rookie campaign.
Mar 14 2017Story is 8-for-25 (.320) with four doubles and four home runs through nine games this spring. The 24-year-old is making this kind of performance seem like an annual routine, as this torrid production pushes his career spring training OPS to a blistering 1.156 mark. Of course these stats don't count for anything once the regular season rolls around, but it's a good sign to see that Story is already in mid-season form as he heads into his second season as the Rockies' starting shortstop.
Feb 8 2017Story says he has fully recovered from thumb surgery and will be ready for spring training, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Story underwent the surgery to repair a torn UCL in August, abruptly ending his dynamic 2016 season. This is great news regarding the young slugger, who set a National League rookie record with 27 home runs and finished the season with a .567 slugging percentage. If Story can cut down on his strikeout rate (31.3 percent), he could find himself among the league's elite power hitters.
Jan 26 2017Story (thumb) will have to improve his home/road splits in the coming season to reduce the chance of major regression, according to Manny Randhawa of Sports on Earth.Story was a force to be reckoned with in 176 at-bats at Coors Field, batting .313 with 16 home runs and a 1.086 OPS. However, as one would expect, his numbers tapered off significantly on the road, as he only batted .235 in 196 road at-bats and saw his OPS drop over 300 points. The 24-year-old's future will depend largely on whether he fixes the holes in his swing and adjusts in away games -- five-time All-Star Troy Tulowitzki managed to overcome the Coors Field Effect in his sophomore season, while former Rockies bust Wilin Rosario saw his stats at home decrease after failing to adjust to the away environments. Story seems to be on track to be ready for spring training following thumb surgery in August.
Aug 4 2016Story (thumb) underwent surgery Thursday to repair a torn UCL in his thumb. While it was initially thought that Story merely had a jammed thumb, follow-up tests revealed that he had in fact torn a ligament. Although there's been no official word on his shelf time, it seems likely that the shortstop will be shut down for the rest of the season. There's plenty of reason for excitement down the road for the 23-year-old, as he was on pace for 100-plus runs and RBI prior to the injury.
Aug 2 2016Story was palced on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a torn UCL in his left thumb. This is a tough for both Story and the Rockies as he had been a key cog in what had been one of the hottest teams in baseball since the start of the second half of the season. He was initially diagnosed with a jammed thumb, but further tests revealed a torn ligament. The Rockies have yet to release a timetable for Story's return, but it could hinge on whether or not his injury requires surgery. Rafael Ynoa was recalled in a corresponding move Tuesday, but Cristhian Adames also figures to see plenty of time at shortstop in Story's absence.
Aug 2 2016Story will undergo surgery to repair the torn UCL in his thumb and he will likely miss the remainder of the regular season, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reports.Story was initially diagnosed with a jammed thumb, but further testing on the area Tuesday revealed a torn unlar collateral ligament in his thumb. He will undergo surgery in the near future and according to Jenny Cavnar of Root Sports, the usual timetable for that procedure is roughly eight weeks. The timing of Story's diagnosis compounds its impact given that the Rockies could have traded for a shortstop at the trade deadline had they known about the extent of the injury. Instead, the Rockies will likely have to go with a platoon of Cristhian Adames, Daniel Descalso, and Rafael Ynoa at shortstop. Regardless, it will be nearly impossible to replace Story's Rookie of the Year-level production with that platoon. Story slashed .272/.341/.567 with 27 home runs and 72 RBI through 97 games this season.
Aug 2 2016Story (thumb) is not in the lineup again on Tuesday as the Rockies host the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of True Blue LA reports.Story was taken out of Saturday's game with a thumb injury. It was thought that he would return to the lineup on Tuesday, but it looks like the Rockies will give him at least one extra day off. The Rockies will be extra careful with their young slugger and wait until he's fully healthy before putting him back in the lineup. Daniel Descalso will get the start at short for the Rockies on Tuesday.
Jul 31 2016Story (thumb) is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mets, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.Story left Saturday's matchup early, but the Rockies got some good news later when X-rays came back negative and the injury was described as a jammed thumb. Although it's not likely to be a long-term concern, Story will get the day off Sunday in favor of Cristhian Adames at shortstop. WIth a team day off on the schedule Monday, Story's next chance to return to action will be Tuesday's series opener against the Dodgers.
Jul 30 2016Story left Saturday's game with an apparent left thumb injury, Jenny Cavnar of Root Sports reports.Further details regarding Story's status were not immediately available, but expect his status to be updated when more news is released.
Jul 30 2016Story's injury is being called a jammed left thumb, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.X-rays on the Rockies shortstop came back negative, which is obviously good news. Story is considered day-to-day while we wait for more information.
Jul 28 2016Story went 2-for-4 with a ninth-inning stolen base and the game-tying run in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Mets. After a leadoff single, Story swiped second and scored on an error to tie the game and hand Mets closer Jeurys Familia a blown save. The steal was just his eighth in 13 tries this year, which may be less than fantasy owners expected after he swiped 20-plus in three straight minor league seasons -- but when you've hit 27 homers, that sure does go a long way toward making up for it.
Jul 24 2016Story went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a double and an additional run scored during Sunday's win over Atlanta.Story feasted on Braves pitching over the weekend series, as four of his seven hits went for home runs en route to nine RBI and seven runs scored as well. 'Breakout' hardly seems to describe what Story has done during his first Major League season, as his 27 round-trippers now lead the National League.
Jul 23 2016Story went 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base during Saturday's 8-4 win over the Braves. The impressive rookie dug his team out of an early hole with a two-run blast in the second inning, gave them the lead with a two-run single in the sixth, and put an exclamation point on the win with a solo shot in the eighth. Story has been an excellent source of power this season, but he has been especially productive over the last six games in that department, as he has five home runs to go along with 10 RBI, eight runs scored and a pair of stolen bases to boot.
Jul 18 2016Story homered in a 2-for-3 game with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI in Monday's win over Tampa Bay.Story remains atop the MLB shortstop leaderboard with 22 homers and is the only National League shortstop with 20 home runs yet this season. He now owns a .286 ISO, and if Story can sustain that mark, it will be the best ISO a shortstop has posted since Alex Rodriguez's .301 mark with the Rangers in 2003. His power is otherworldly for the position, making him one of the best hitting shortstops in the game no matter how many times he strikes out.
Jul 17 2016Story is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves, Jenny Cavnar of ROOT Sports reports.Chalk this up as a routine day off for Story, who has started nine straight contests dating back to prior to the All-Star break. He collected a hit in each of the first two games of the series, but will give way to Cristhian Adames at shortstop for Sunday's finale.
Jul 8 2016Story went 2-for-3 with two homers, four RBI and three runs in Thursday's 11-2 victory over the Phillies. The dynamic rookie went over the 20-homer mark with a 442-foot shot in the third that plated DJ LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez, and provided a mammoth 446-foot solo blast in the fifth as an encore. Story snapped an 0-for-17 skid with his momentous night, and tied an NL rookie record for most homers before the All-Star break. The performance was an excellent pitch on Story's part for the final NL All-Star spot, an honor that he's one of five finalists for.
Jul 4 2016Story (finger) is back in the lineup Monday against the Giants, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.Story has given way to Cristhian Adames at shortstop for four straight games, but his bruised fingers appears healthy enough for the emerging star to return to action Monday. He'll bat fifth in the order, following the one-two punch of Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez.
Jul 3 2016Story (finger) remains out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers.Story will be held out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game, once again giving way to Cristhian Adames at shortstop. The team remains optimistic Story can avoid the DL, but he's far from a lock to start Monday's series opener against the Giants.
Jul 2 2016Story (finger) is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Dodgers.Cristhian Adames will get another start at shortstop Saturday while Story continues to rest his injured finger. Saturday will mark Story's third consecutive game out of the lineup, but there is still no indication at this point that he'll require a stint on the DL. Adames figures to continue to serve as the Rockies' shortstop while Story is sidelined.
Jul 1 2016Story (finger) remains out of the lineup Friday against the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of SB Nation reports.Evidently, back-to-back off days did not provide Story with sufficient rest for his ailing finger, as the Rockies are set to start Cristhian Adames at short again Friday. Story's availability for the rest of the weekend is up in the air, but there has been nothing to suggest a DL move is imminent.
Jun 29 2016Story (finger) will not play in Wednesday's game against Toronto, Jenny Cavnar of Root Sports reports.Story missed Monday's game after being hit by a pitch Sunday, and after re-injuring the finger in an at-bat yesterday, he won't start Wednesday to give him two days of rest with an off day Thursday. Christhian Adames will fill in at shortstop in Story's absence.
Jun 28 2016Story (finger) is back in the lineup Tuesday against the Blue Jays.X-rays on Story's finger were negative after he was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Sunday's game, and he will return Tuesday after missing just one start. He has been batting out of the five-hole more of late but will bat second against lefty J.A. Happ on Tuesday. Story is batting .272/.372/.506 against left-handed pitching so far this season.
Jun 27 2016Story (finger) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Story will sit out after being hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of Sunday's game. The 23-year-old is in the middle of a breakout season, hiting .271 with 19 home runs, 50 RBI and 47 runs, but will continue to be day-to-day while he rests his finger.
Jun 26 2016Story will bat cleanup for the first time this season Sunday against the Diamondbacks, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Story has hit primarily out of the five-spot since get usurped by DJ LeMahieu for the second spot in the order at the end of May. Now, he'll get an opportunity to bat cleanup, sandwiched between RBI machines Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez. It's unclear if manager Walt Weiss plans to continue with this lineup after Sunday, but a strong performance from Story during the afternoon contest could only help his case.
Jun 26 2016An X-ray on Story's right middle finger did not reveal any broken bones after Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Story was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, eventually coming around to score on Mark Reynolds' walk-off home run. The rookie slugger may miss time despite getting some good news from the X-ray, as his finger is reportedly sore and swollen. Story went 2-for-2 with a home run and two walks in Sunday's game, improving his batting line to .271/.339/.559 in the process. The Rockies may need a Monday call-up to help with depth in the middle infield, as starting second Daniel LeMahieu (bruised knee) was also injured Sunday.
Jun 24 2016Story is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Diamondback, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Story will be getting a day off as Cristhian Adames gets the start at shortstop. The 23-year-old has started the past 13 games for the Rockies and is having another solid month for the club, batting .273/.341/.494 with four home runs and 12 RBI in June.
Jun 20 2016Story went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk in Monday's 5-3 victory at Miami.Story continues to prove that he's much more than just a Coors Field product, with 11 of his 18 homers and 27 of his 46 RBI coming on the road. While much of that power is due to an early-season surge, the shortstop's average has actually crept up every month. Expect the rookie to remain a relevant option at an offensively-starved position even if he's unable to keep hitting long balls at this pace.
Jun 8 2016Story is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of True Blue LA reports.Story has started each of the last 13 games for the Rockies and will get a well-earned day off Wednesday. In his place, Christhian Adames will slot into the shortstop position and bat eighth. Story will likely be back in the lineup Thursday against the Pirates.
Jun 3 2016Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's loss to the Reds.It seems almost ho-hum at this point, as Story continues to produce at an exceptional clip. The 23-year-old is tied for second in the NL in home runs with 15 (most among all shortstop-eligible players) and ranks third in the NL in RBI with 38. Jose Reyes is working himself back into game shape in the minors, but Story isn't going anywhere.
May 27 2016Story went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI Friday against the Giants. The rookie shortstop has looked pretty comfortable in the seventh spot in the lineup, where he's gone 3-for-8 in the last two games. Strikeouts will always be an issue for him, but his power (13 home runs and 29 total extra-base hits) and ability to produce runs (35) more than make up for his lack of contact.
May 26 2016Story went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a strikeout against the Red Sox Thursday. The move down the order and they off day Wednesday helped Story, as the rookie contributed on offense after he struck out six times in eight at-bats in the last two games. His value is still on the decline after he's gone 10-for-42 in the past 10 contests, but the homer might be what he needs to get back on track.
May 25 2016Story is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox.After wearing the golden sombrero with an four-strikeout performance Tuesday night, manager Walt Weiss decided it was a good day to give his young shortstop some rest. Christhian Adames will slot into the lineup at shortstop to fill in for him.
May 24 2016Story went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Tuesday against the Red Sox.Story has been one of the biggest storylines this year, but it seems the league has beginning to adjust to him. The rookie shortstop has gone 2-for-16 after a seven-game hitting streak, and has struck out in 50 percent of his at-bats over that span.
May 23 2016Story is in the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.Story was set to receive his first day off of the month Sunday, but the game was rained out, and the Rockies decided the impromptu team day off was enough rest. As he regularly does, Story will start at shortstop and hit second Monday afternoon.
May 22 2016Story is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding.Story is hitting .313 this month and tallied five hits over his last three games, but manager Walt Weiss decided it was time to give Story his first day off since April 26. Christhian Adames will get the start at shortstop in Story's place.
May 22 2016Story went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's 5-1 victory over the Pirates. The rookie shortstop continues rolling along, managing his eighth multi-hit game of May. He's tallied a stellar .313/.360/.500 line over 80 at-bats during the month, with the only blemish being that he's seen a steep drop-off in his power numbers. After blasting 10 homers in what was a memorable first month in the minors, Story has only a pair of dingers to date in May. However, the increase in OBP has certainly helped offset that, and has helped raise Story's average 24 points to .285.
May 19 2016Story went 3-for-5 with a two-run double and a solo homer in Thursday's 13-7 loss to St. Louis.Anyone waiting for Story's "inevitable" drop-off should take a hard look at his .287 average and all those counting stats, then maybe reevaluate that pessimistic point of view. He's actually slugged eight of his 12 homers away from Coors Field, and that's got to be a scary prospect for the rest of the National League. The combination of his sky-high strikeout rate (yes, he did rack up another whiff again Thursday, his 58th this season) and similarly sky-high BABIP (.368) certainly does seem to foreshadow a fall-off in batting average, but then again, Story was always a high-strikeout, high-BABIP guy in the minors too. Former starting shortstop Jose Reyes may be returning from his suspension in the next couple weeks, but there's no doubt that (barring injury, of course) Story has displaced him for good.
May 9 2016Story doubled twice and knocked in three runs in Monday's loss to Arizona.Story has a five-game hitting streak rolling and now has four extra-base hits and five RBI over that span. He also struck out two more times and has a brutal 33.3 percent strikeout rate this season, but as long as he keeps hitting for power whenever he makes contact, Story's strikeouts will be more than worth enduring.
May 5 2016Story went 3-for-6 with his 11th homer, three RBI and two runs in a 17-7 win against the Giants on Thursday. He may be sitting on one of the league's worst strikeout rates, but Story also owns the second-most homers in all of baseball, and the guy he's trailing hits two spots behind him in the Colorado order. That would be Nolan Arenado, who hit his 12th homer Thursday. Meanwhile, Story's rewriting the history books in his rookie season -- he's on a 162-game pace for more than 60 homers, and he's only played 11 games at Coors Field so far.
May 4 2016Story went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and a steal Tuesday in San Diego.Story swiped over 20 bags across all levels in each of his last three minor-league seasons, so the rookie shortstop does have that element to his game. The 23-year-old hasn't shown off his speed much yet in part because he's been too busy crushing homers, but Story's been making fantasy owners happy either way thus far.
Apr 28 2016Story is not in the lineup Thursday against the Pirates, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. It looks like another routine day off for Story, who hit his ninth home run of the season Wednesday but will sit for the second time in three games. Colorado will go with Christhian Adames at short, and he'll bat second against Pittsburgh's Juan Nicasio.
Apr 27 2016Story went 1-for-6 with his ninth homer of the year -- a solo shot -- in Wednesday's win over the Pirates. He also struck out three more times and is now hitting .241, a fact that fantasy owners shouldn't ignore when celebrating Story's tie with Bryce Harper and Nolan Arenado at the top of the MLB leaderboard in homers. The rookie shortstop has been fanned a stunning 34 times in 92 plate appearances, giving him a ridiculous 37 percent strikeout rate -- the second-worst in all of baseball. Playing half his games at Coors Field should prop up his numbers regardless, but even if he cuts down the whiffs, it doesn't look like Story's going to contribute much in the way of batting average. Still, his fantasy owners won't complain about the power numbers he gives them at shortstop.
Jun 30 2015Story was promoted to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, Isotopes announcer Josh Suchon reports.Story had a .897 OPS with 10 home runs and 15 steals at Double-A, so he more than earned the promotion. The 22-year-old infielder played 50 games at shortstop, 12 games at second base and five games at third base with New Britain, so he has the versatility to play all over the diamond should an opportunity open up at the big league level.
May 25 2015Story, 22, is slashing .288/.385/500 over 80 at-bats in May for Double-A New Britain.Story's OPS is down over 200 points from April, but some decline in that number was inevitable coming off Eastern League Player of the Month honors. All told, Story is batting .322 with a .421 on-base percentage through 41 games, while showcasing the blend of power (22 extra-base hits) and speed (9-for-10 on stolen-base attempts) that had the Rockies so bullish on his potential coming out of high school in 2011. With the major-league club finding themselves at the bottom of the NL West and looking like non-contenders, Story's first taste of the big leagues could come in the second half. That being said, until Troy Tulowitzki is traded or the Rockies attempt to transition Story to second base, it will be difficult for Story to find regular starts once he reaches the majors.
Jun 29 2013Story, 20, is 6-for-36 (.167) in his last 10 games at High-A Modesto, with a 5:16 BB:K ratio during that stretch.Plate discipline has been a problem all season for Story, who has fanned 104 times in 273 at-bats this season. With a disappointing line (especially in the context of the hitter-friendly California League) of .205/.278/.326 through 71 games, Story will almost certainly remain with Modesto for the rest of the 2013 campaign. Considering that he's one of the younger players in the league, Story's numbers should be taken with the appropriate grain of salt, and owners in dynasty formats should plan on a full season for him at each minor league stop given his contact woes. When given the green light on the basepaths, Story is a perfect 12-for-12 this season.
