May 12 2025Murphy -- who began the season on the 60-day injured list due to a mid-back disc herniation -- will be re-evaluated in six weeks, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy started the season on the 60-day injured list due to disc herniation in his back that he suffered during spring training in February. He'll have his injury re-evaluated near the end of June, so the 34-year-old catcher may not be back on the major-league roster until after the All-Star break.
Mar 26 2025The Giants placed Murphy (back) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was diagnosed with a mid-back disc herniation in February and was expected to miss Opening Day for much of spring training, but his placement on the 60-day IL will ensure that he remains out until at least late May. While Murphy works his way back, Sam Huff will fill in as the backup catcher behind Patrick Bailey, and Christian Koss will claim the open spot on the 40-man roster.
Mar 10 2025Murphy will receive a second epidural shot this week to address a mid-back disc herniation and will be limited strictly to rehab work for the next two weeks following the injection, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy can safely be ruled out from being ready for Opening Day, which had already been expected after he had yet to appear in any Cactus League games before being diagnosed with the disc issue in late February. Given that he missed most of the 2024 season after suffering a sprained MCL in his left knee, Murphy will likely be eased along slowly in his rehab program for his back injury once he's cleared to resume baseball activities. With Murphy set to begin the season on the shelf, Sam Huff or non-roster invitee Max Stassi could break camp as the Giants' No. 2 catcher behind Patrick Bailey.
Feb 28 2025Murphy (back) has begun light rehab activities, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury Newsreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has a mid-back disk herniation and is facing a fairly lengthy rehab process. The veteran catcher will begin the season on the injured list, leaving Sam Huff and Max Stassi competing for the backup role behind Patrick Bailey.
Feb 24 2025Murphy has been diagnosed with a mid-back disk herniation and is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was given an epidural injection and will be re-evaluated in a few weeks. The 33-year-old entered camp as the favorite to be the Giants' backup catcher behind Patrick Bailey, but now Sam Huff and Max Stassi will compete for that gig. The Giants have also promoted Adrian Sugastey from the minor-league side of camp to supplement their catching depth.
Feb 17 2025Giants manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Murphy is dealing with a mild oblique strain and is expected to return to game action in 7-to-10 days, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants had initially labeled Murphy's injury as back spasms, but an MRI detected the oblique strain. Though Melvin is referring to the oblique strain as minor, Murphy still looks set to miss multiple workouts before making his Cactus League debut. The veteran backstop had been limited to just 12 games with the Giants in 2024 due to a sprained MCL in his left knee, but he had received a clean bill of health heading into spring training before the oblique issue cropped up.
Feb 16 2025Murphy will undergo an MRI on Sunday after experiencing back spasms, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not believed to be a serious injury, but it's still a concerning development for the veteran catcher, who was limited to 12 games last season due to a knee injury. Murphy is expected to serve as San Francisco's No. 2 catcher this season, but he has played in just 64 contests across the past three campaigns.
Feb 12 2025Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Murphy (knee) has received full clearance to begin spring training, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Signed to a two-year, $8 million contract last winter, Murphy had most of his first season in San Francisco wiped out after he sprained the MCL in his left knee in early May. He was able to avoid knee surgery, but Murphy didn't make enough progress in his recovery to head out on a rehab assignment at any point after landing on the injured list. With a full offseason to recover, Murphy finally looks to have healed up from the knee injury, and he should be in position to open the season as the Giants' No. 2 catcher. The right-handed-hitting Murphy could end up filling the short side of a platoon behind the plate with the switch-hitting Patrick Bailey, who was far more effective against righties than lefties in 2024.
Sep 16 2024Murphy (knee) has yet to resume catching and isn't expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list before the season ends Sept. 29, Evan Webeck of the East Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has resided on the IL since May 5 with a sprained MCL in his left knee. Though he avoided surgery and was expected to make a full recovery from the injury in six weeks, Murphy has been a slow healer, with the knee injury still presenting too much pain for him to resume squatting behind the plate. The knee sprain hasn't kept him from hitting, throwing and running, but the Giants aren't keen on activating the 33-year-old if he's available only as a designated hitter or pinch-hitting option. Murphy said that he expects to be ready to resume catching in spring training after getting a full offseason of recovery.
Aug 20 2024Giants manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Murphy (knee) has begun a hitting and running progression and could be an option to return from the 60-day injured list in September, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has been on the shelf since May 5 with a left knee injury that was categorized as between a Grade 1 and Grade 2 sprain. The backstop hasn't recovered from the injury as quickly as anticipated, but he seems to be responding better after visiting Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles in late July and receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection for the knee. The Giants likely won't be able to pinpoint a more precise target date for Murphy's return until he's cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.
Jul 5 2024Murphy (knee) will catch a live bullpen session Saturday in San Francisco, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy will likely be joined by right-hander Keaton Winn (elbow) for Saturday's session. Murphy was transferred to the 60-day injured list May 15 due to a sprained left knee, and it took a month before the 33-year-old catcher could resume baseball activities. Saturday's session is another step in Murphy's rehab program, and he could return to the Giants before the All-Star break barring any setbacks. He appeared in 13 games prior to his injury, going 4-for-34 with one home run and two RBI.
Jun 18 2024Murphy (knee) has been taking batting practice and throwing out to 110 feet as of last week, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was seemingly cleared to resume baseball activities earlier this month, but he likely still has a few checkpoints to hit in his recovery from a left knee sprain before the Giants clear him to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 33-year-old backstop is currently on the 60-day injured list and won't be eligible for activation until the first week of July.
May 15 2024The Giants transferred Murphy (knee) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was given a 4-to-6 week recovery timeline when he landed on the injured list May 5 due to a sprained left knee. However, his move to the 60-day IL will make him ineligible to return until July 4. The Giants signed Curt Casali on Wednesday to fill Murphy's spot on the 40-man roster and provide emergency catcher depth with Patrick Bailey (concussion) also out.
May 6 2024Giants manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Murphy is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks after being diagnosed with a left knee sprain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy suffered the injury during Saturday's game versus the Phillies and landed on the 10-day injured list Sunday. With Patrick Bailey (concussion) on the 7-day IL at least for the next few days, the Giants are down to Blake Sabol and Jakson Reetz as their catching duo.
May 5 2024The Giants placed Murphy on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain Sunday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy suffered the injury during Saturday's contest and is now on the injured list after an MRI revealed a sprain. Patrick Bailey (concussion) is also unavailable, leaving Blake Sabol and Jakson Reetz, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, to handle catching duties.
May 4 2024Murphy (knee) will undergo an MRI on Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy said he felt a pop in his left knee while trying to block a wild pitch in Saturday's loss to the Phillies. It's an injury that forced him from the game and Murphy admitted after the contest that his concern level is high. With Patrick Bailey (concussion) also sidelined, the Giants are down to one healthy catcher on their 40-man roster in Blake Sabol.
May 1 2024Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Wednesday in a loss to the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy put the Giants on the board with a 407-foot solo blast in the third inning, but the team ended up scoring just once more in the contest. The long ball was the first of the season for the backstop, who has struggled to a paltry .100/.206/.233 slash line through 35 plate appearances. Murphy is firmly behind Patrick Bailey on San Francisco's catcher depth chart.
Apr 10 2024Murphy will start at catcher and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he was able to beat out Joey Bart for the Giants' No. 2 catcher job before Bart was dealt to Pittsburgh earlier this month, Murphy has seen limited action behind No. 1 backstop Patrick Bailey. With Bailey getting a breather in the day game after a night game, Murphy will draw his fourth start through the Giants' first 13 games.
Mar 4 2024Murphy has gone 2-for-7 with a double and three strikeouts over his first three Cactus League games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was signed in the offseason to back up Patrick Bailey at catcher. Murphy has played no more than 97 games in a season in his major-league career. He's often hit well in a backup role, but Joey Bart (3-for-9) and Blake Sabol (1-for-8) are also options to fill that spot to begin 2024. More clarity should be available once the Giants trim down their spring roster, though it appears Murphy's experience is favored to win out over Bart, who could be waived or traded if he doesn't earn a roster spot.
Dec 18 2023Murphy agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with the Giants on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has struggled to stay healthy over the last two seasons, appearing in only 61 total games during this stretch with Seattle. He'll look for a fresh start in San Francisco, where he's in line to serve as the backup catcher behind Patrick Bailey. The righty-hitting Murphy has a career .292/.361/.508 slash line against lefties and will likely be in the lineup whenever the Giants face a southpaw.
Sep 22 2023Murphy is slated to have imaging performed on his injured thumb Friday in order to determine whether he's ready to return to baseball activities, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has been sidelined since mid-August with what initially was a thumb sprain. However, the veteran backstop subsequently suffered a small fracture in the thumb in early September while performing baseball activities, and he's been shut down altogether since Sept. 11. Friday's evaluation should give the Mariners a clearer picture of whether Murphy, who'd been a key contributor courtesy of a .290 average and .873 OPS across 158 plate appearances, will be able to jump into game action before the conclusion of the regular season.
Sep 11 2023Murphy has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his left thumb and has been shut down for the last 10 days. He'll be re-evaluated Sept. 22, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was initially placed on the 10-day injured list Aug. 16 due to a thumb sprain, and this setback will cost him additional time. Despite this bad news, the team is still optimistic that Murphy could return to play before the regular season comes to a close if he gains clearance Sept. 22 and can ramp up activities without suffering any setbacks, per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times.
Aug 25 2023Murphy (thumb) is visiting with a specialist and is expected to be cleared to increase baseball activities this week, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has been sidelined since mid-August with a left thumb sprain but seems to have made a rapid recovery. It's not clear at this point whether he will require a rehab assignment before rejoining the Mariners.
Aug 16 2023Seattle placed Murphy on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left thumb sprain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury comes with awful timing for Murphy, who has been playing more regularly in recent weeks and boasts a .355/.393/.697 batting line over his last 24 games (85 plate appearances) dating back to June 12. Brian O'Keefe was called up from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move to back up Cal Raleigh at catcher.
Aug 3 2023Murphy went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's victory over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy's been red hot for the past week, going 10-for-22 (.455) with a pair of homers in his last six games. The 32-year-old backstop now has a 1.294 OPS since June 23 (17 games). Murphy's hot stretch has earned him a larger share of the workload behind the plate, with Cal Raleigh seeing more time at DH. Overall, Murphy's slash line is up to .300/.340/.577 with eight homers, 17 runs scored and 16 RBI across 141 plate appearances this season.
Jul 29 2023Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy plated the game's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and later hit a solo shot to left field for Seattle's final tally of the contest. The backstop has opened the second half of the season on a strong note, batting .308 (8-for-26) with three homers and six RBI over eight games. That's helped him see more playing time of late, though Cal Raleigh -- who started at DH on Saturday -- remains the team's first option behind the plate.
Jul 24 2023Murphy went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in an extra-inning loss to the Twins on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game was scoreless through four frames before Murphy put the Mariners on the board with a 421-foot solo shot to center field in the fifth. It was his seventh homer of the season, six of which have come over his past 14 contests. Murphy has been red-hot over that span, batting .372 (16-for-43) with nine extra-base hits. While he's still behind Cal Raleigh on the depth chart, the productive stretch has earned Murphy more playing time.
Jul 19 2023Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy got the Mariners on the board with his sixth-inning blast off Kenta Maeda. While his playing time remains sparse, Murphy has taken advantages of his opportunities by going 5-for-15 (.333) with two homers in July. The backup catcher is batting .275 with six long balls, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and nine doubles over 112 plate appearances this season.
Jul 3 2023Murphy went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in a win over the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy continued to reward manager Scott Servais for affording him one of his occasional starts, slugging his fifth homer of the season in the sixth inning and serving as a thorn in the side of Rays pitching throughout the afternoon. The 32-year-old has pushed his season slash line to a stellar .281/.337/.551 across 98 plate appearances, with the latter figure largely the byproduct of Murphy lacing 14 of his 25 hits for extra bases. Murphy has notably drawn starts in three of his last four games -- the first time that's happened all season -- and the combination of his hot bat and ability to fill in at both designated hitter and catcher could afford him similarly frequent playing time moving forward.
Jul 1 2023Murphy went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and a walk in a loss to the Rays on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran got the start at designated hitter and once again thrived versus a lefty, taking what turned out to be a less-than-100-percent Shane McClanahan (back) deep in the second inning with Teoscar Hernandez aboard. Murphy's bat seems unfazed by the fact he sees sporadic playing time, as he's now hitting .409 (9-for-22) with two doubles, three homers, seven RBI, a walk and four runs across his last six starts dating back to June 10.
Jun 29 2023Murphy went 3-for-3 in a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop drew the start against left-hander Patrick Corbin and authored his first three-hit game of the season and seventh multi-hit effort overall. Murphy's appearance in the starting nine was only his second in the last 10 games as Cal Raleigh continues to command the majority of playing time behind the dish. However, Murphy has been progressively more productive in recent opportunities, now having hit safely in four of his last five starts and raising his average 44 points to .259 in the process.
Jun 23 2023Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly in Friday's 13-1 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The backup catcher made his first start since last weekend and took advantage of the opportunity with his third home run of the season. Cal Raleigh is having another solid year behind the plate for Seattle, so Murphy should remain in a secondary role for the foreseeable future.
Jun 13 2023Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double, a solo home run and an additional run scored in an 8-1 win over the Marlins on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Drawing his second start in three games with left-hander Jesus Luzardo on the mound for the Marlins, Murphy continued the extra-base-hit barrage that's been his trademark during his sparse opportunities this season. The veteran's eighth double of the season came off Luzardo, while his 408-foot shot to center in the eighth provided the final run of the game for either club. Ten of Murphy's 17 hits on the season have gone for extra bases, and his current .233 average represents his highest figure in the category since May 20.
Jun 11 2023Murphy went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in a win over the Angels on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start in five games, Murphy extended the Mariners' lead to 4-2 with his fourth-inning single. The veteran backstop continues to find opportunities sparse behind Cal Raleigh, as he's appeared in just 23 of Seattle's 63 games. The lack of consistent playing time likely isn't helping Murphy's timing at the plate any -- he's carrying just a .217 average and .270 on-base percentage -- but it's worth noting he's knocked eight of his 15 hits for extra bases.
May 31 2023Murphy went 1-for-1 with a double and a walk in Tuesday's loss to the Yankees before being ejected for arguing a strike call in the sixth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop was upset about a check-swing that was called a strike and was tossed for yelling at the first base umpire. Murphy has logged 66 plate appearances across 21 games while ceding the bulk of playing time behind the dish to Cal Raleigh, and Tuesday marked the third time in his last four starts that he'd reached safely.
May 9 2023Murphy went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored, a double and a walk in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was excellent Tuesday, with his seventh-inning blast off Andrew Heaney serving as the highlight. While Murphy doesn't play much as the Mariners' backup catcher, he has multiple hits in four of his last five games. The 32-year-old is slashing .244/.262/.415 through 42 plate appearances.
Apr 28 2023Murphy, who played for the first time since last Friday in Thursday's loss to the Phillies and went 2-for-3 with a double, has logged only 29 plate appearances and appeared in nine of the Mariners' 25 games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran is healthy after appearing in just 14 games in 2022 due to a shoulder injury, but he's seen Cal Raleigh draw 20 starts overall, with 19 of those behind the dish. That's left Murphy with sparse opportunities to see the field, and his timing at the plate unsurprisingly seems to be suffering. Even factoring in his first multi-hit effort of the season Thursday, Murphy is slashing just .138/.138/.207.
Apr 4 2023Murphy is hitting eighth and lined up as the designated hitter for Tuesday's tilt against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has gone hitless in his first six plate appearances of 2023, but he does have a history of success against left-handed pitchers so he'll get the nod at DH against Jose Suarez.
Mar 20 2023Murphy was scratched from Monday's Cactus League lineup against Milwaukee due to left forearm tightness, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-handed hitter was scheduled to catch against the Brewers on Monday, but instead it was Brian O'Keefe who was behind the plate. Murphy has dealt with injuries over the past two seasons, and it's a disappointing development after his strong start to the 2023 Cactus League (.886 OPS, two homers in 34 plate appearances). There should be more clarity on the severity of Murphy's injury in the coming days. If the injury was to carry into the regular season, Cooper Hummel would likely be Cal Raleigh's backup backstop.
Mar 4 2023Murphy went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's Cactus League win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy is reacclimating after seeing his 2022 season end in June due to shoulder surgery, and Friday's breakout performance against the Diamondbacks might be considered his official welcome back party after a quiet first three games at the plate. Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports Mariners starting pitcher Marco Gonzales, who had Murphy as his battery mate for the first time since last season Friday, is especially excited about getting back what he considers a valuable resource. "He's just an energy source in our dugout," said Gonzales. "He's able to kind of pull the mask down and be really serious, too, which is good. So he knows what I need to do to be successful. And I think even sometimes better than I myself do, and so to have that voice out there is just priceless for me."
Feb 24 2023Murphy (shoulder) is starting at catcher and batting seventh in Friday's Cactus League opener versus the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last June, but he appears ready to go for the start of spring training eight months later. The 31-year-old is slated to operate as a depth option behind Cal Raleigh at catcher this season.
Jan 13 2023Murphy (shoulder) and the Mariners agreed on a one-year, $1.625 million contract Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy and the team will avoid arbitration with the deal they struck Friday. The catcher had to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery in late June, but he is expected to be ready for the start of the 2023 campaign. Murphy batted .303 with a solo homer and nine runs scored over 33 at-bats in 14 games with Seattle last season.
Jun 29 2022Murphy (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy's move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural, as the Mariners announced last week that the catcher will require season-ending shoulder surgery. Luis Torrens (shoulder) landed on the 10-day IL on Monday, so Andrew Knapp is on the active roster to serve as the primary backup to Cal Raleigh behind the plate.
Jun 23 2022Murphy (shoulder) will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy sustained his shoulder injury in early May and suffered a setback several weeks later. The 31-year-old started to ramp up his rehab process recently after being shut down and received a PRP injection, but he'll ultimately require a procedure that will force him to miss the remainder of the season. Cal Raleigh and Luis Torrens should continue to serve as the Mariners' top two options behind the dish.
Jun 16 2022Murphy (shoulder) is back to doing work in the batting cage following a temporary shutdown of his rehab process, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop is both batting and catching balls from a machine as he begins to ramp his rehab work following a pause. Murphy had previously been shut down for 10 days due to a lack of responsiveness from his shoulder, so the fact he seems to be increasing his activity level without any reported setbacks is encouraging.
May 23 2022Murphy will refrain from participation in baseball activities for 10 days due to a lack of responsiveness from his injured left shoulder, Craig Forde of MLB.com reports. "He's not ready to go," manager Scott Servais said. "As much as he's tried to push it and as hard as he's worked, it just hasn't picked up the momentum it's needed to." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop therefore looks likely to be sidelined until early-to-mid-June at the earliest. Murphy had been enjoying a fruitful start to the season that included a .303 average, .894 OPS and a 19.5 percent walk rate, but he'll now likely need a multi-game rehab assignment before he's deemed ready for activation.
May 20 2022Murphy (shoulder) has suffered a setback in his recovery process, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mariners were hopeful that Murphy would be able to return from the injured list during the team's weekend series in Boston since the backstop recently took swings in the batting cage and caught a bullpen session. However, he won't be back in action this weekend following his setback. It's not yet clear whether Murphy will be in the mix to be activated once the Mariners return home early next week.
May 18 2022Murphy (shoulder) continues to take swings in the batting cage and is expected to catch a bullpen session Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Scott Servais said he's optimistic that Murphy will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list at some point during the Mariners' upcoming series in Boston that begins Thursday. Once Murphy is activated, he's expected to form a timeshare at catcher with Luis Torrens. The Mariners will likely send Cal Raleigh to Triple-A Tacoma whenever Murphy is deemed ready to go.
May 13 2022Murphy (shoulder) took swings in the cage Friday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has been on the injured list with a dislocated left shoulder for nearly a week, and manager Scott Servais said Friday that the backstop isn't yet feeling 100 percent. The Mariners are currently on a road trip that runs through next Sunday, and Servais indicated that it's possible Murphy will be able to return sometime late in the road trip.
May 7 2022Murphy (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy suffered a dislocated left shoulder Friday against the Rays, and manager Scott Servais said that the backstop will be out for a while. While a timetable for Murphy's return isn't yet clear, Cal Raleigh was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to provide catching depth behind Luis Torrens.
May 6 2022Murphy left Saturday's game against the Rays with a dislocated left shoulder. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was recently dealing with neck spasms, and now he will presumably need a stint on the injured list. Luis Torrens replaced him behind the dish. Cal Raleigh could be summoned from Triple-A if Murphy is indeed set for an extended absence.
May 5 2022Murphy was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to neck spasms, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury is not expected to hold Murphy out long term, and the hope is that he can return at some point during the team's weekend series against the Rays. Even so, it wouldn't be a surprise to lee Luis Torrens draw a start behind the plate Friday to allow Murphy an additional day of rest.
May 4 2022Murphy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy started in three of the past four games, but he went 0-for-7 with five strikeouts and two walks over that stretch to drop his season average to .323. He should see a slight uptick in opportunities following the recent demotion of Cal Raleigh to Triple-A Tacoma, but Luis Torrens looks like Option 1A behind the plate for the Mariners at this time.
Apr 24 2022Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs in a win over the Royals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop continued to rip the cover off the ball in Saturday's 13-run breakout, authoring his first multi-hit effort since his first start of the season. Murphy has made the most of his seven appearances thus far, producing a .421 average and 1.174 OPS across his first 24 plate appearances.
Apr 16 2022Murphy went 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs in a win over the Astros on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hot-hitting catcher pushed his average and on-base percentage to .500 and .636, respectively, with his highly active day at the plate and on the basepaths. The sample size of 11 plate appearances on the season for Murphy is miniscule, but it's nevertheless encouraging to see the veteran backstop hit safely in each of his first three games after producing a disappointing .202/.304/.350 slash line across 97 games a season ago.
Apr 9 2022Murphy went 2-for-3 with a home run, walk and two runs scored in a 4-3 win Saturday in Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy walked and scored in the third and hit a solo home run in the fifth off starter Sonny Gray. It was the season debut for Murphy, as Cal Raleigh started on opening day. Murphy is a defense-first catcher but has hit for power at the Major League level. He should receive a significant share of the catching responsibilities for Seattle with Raleigh getting the majority of starts.
Mar 22 2022Murphy signed a one-year, $1.575 million contract with the Mariners on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy is in his second year of arbitration eligibility after splitting time behind the plate with Cal Raleigh and Luis Torrens last season. Murphy hit .202/.304/.350 with 11 home runs in 34 RBI in 97 games, and the Mariners are entering 2022 with the same group of catchers.
Oct 3 2021Murphy is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cal Raleigh starts behind the dish in a must-win game for the Mariners, who still have a chance at a wild card berth. Murphy will be available off the bench as a potential pinch hitter or defensive replacement.
Sep 29 2021Murphy isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy had started each of the last three games, and he went 1-for-9 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. Cal Raleigh will start behind the dish and bat ninth.
Sep 25 2021Murphy is out of the lineup Saturday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout Friday and will take a seat for the second time in the past three games. Cal Raleigh will work behind the plate for Seattle.
Sep 23 2021Murphy will sit Thursday against Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy has settled in as the Mariners' primary catcher down the stretch and owns a .294/.375/.471 slash line over his last 12 games. He'll sit here after starting three straight games behind the plate, with Cal Raleigh set to catch Yusei Kikuchi.
Sep 19 2021Murphy is not in the lineup Sunday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy went 0-for-2 during Saturday's contest and will take a seat for the second time in the past three games. Cal Raleigh will work behind the plate for Seattle.
Sep 17 2021Murphy is not starting Friday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The backstop will return to the bench for the second time in three games after going 1-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox. Cal Raleigh will work behind the plate and bat ninth.
Sep 14 2021Murphy is not starting Tuesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll take a seat after going hitless in his last six at-bats. Cal Raleigh is set to catch for Tyler Anderson and bat ninth.
Sep 11 2021Murphy went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a two-run blast in a win over the Diamondbacks on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop took Madison Bumgarner deep in the second and sixth innings for his 10th and 11th round trippers of the season. Murphy's second blast, a 382-foot laser to left field in the sixth inning, proved to be the difference in the contest when the Diamondbacks' Seth Beer slugged a pinch-hit solo homer in the eighth inning. Murphy now has a pair of two-hit efforts in the last four games and has driven in six runs over his last five contests overall.
Sep 8 2021Murphy will start at catcher and bat eighth Wednesday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In the lineup versus a right-handed starting pitcher (Jose Urquidy) for the second day in a row, the righty-hitting Murphy appears to have supplanted the lefty-hitting Cal Raleigh as the Mariners' preferred option at catcher. Though his OPS is down nearly 200 points this season from his career-best mark from 2019 (.859), Murphy has at least demonstrated a discerning eye at the plate of late, reaching base at a .405 clip over his last 10 games while striking out at a manageable 24.3 percent rate.
Sep 5 2021Murphy went 2-for-3 with a run, two RBI and a walk in Sunday's 10-4 win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, singled in the seventh, walked in the ninth and brought home a run before scoring on an 11th-inning single. The backstop snapped an 0-for-9 stretch with his first multi-hit outing since Aug. 24, though he continues to share catching duties.
Sep 1 2021Murphy will start at catcher and bat ninth Wednesday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-handed-hitting Murphy typically sees most of his opportunities against left-handed pitching these days, but he'll draw a start behind the dish with a right-hander (Jake Odorizzi) on the mound for Houston. Neither Murphy nor top backstop Cal Raleigh found much success at the plate in August; Murphy compiled a .589 OPS while striking out in 42.2 percent of his plate appearances, while Raleigh delivered a .467 OPS and struck out 34.8 percent of the time.
Aug 14 2021Murphy went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a strikeout in a 3-2 win against the Blue Jays on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy deposited a 1-2 offering from Robbie Ray over the left field fence to give the Mariners an early 2-0 lead. It was the backstop's first long ball since July 22 and he's now 4-for-17 in six August games with a .205/.294/.380 slash line this season.
Jul 26 2021Murphy went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, a walk and an RBI in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy finished off the Mariners' four-run third inning with a Texas Leaguer that fell in just in front of a diving Ramon Laureano for an RBI single. The 30-year-old backstop was productive in both of his starts during the series with Oakland, as he also mashed his eighth home run of the season Thursday. Rookie Cal Raleigh still appears to top the depth chart at catcher ahead of Murphy, who likely can't be counted on to receive more than two or three starts per week.
Jul 23 2021Murphy went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in a loss to the Athletics on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy's 394-foot shot to left field in the seventh inning resulted in the only run for the Mariners on a night when the Athletics' Sean Manaea rang up a career-high 13 strikeouts over seven innings. The veteran backstop owns an abysmal .197/.281/.376 slash line for the season, but at least 15 of his 37 hits have gone for extra bases (seven doubles, eight home runs).
Jul 18 2021Murphy will start at catcher and bat sixth Sunday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he'll join the lineup for the series finale, Murphy appears to be behind Cal Raleigh in the pecking order for reps at catcher and behind Luis Torrens at designated hitter. Murphy, who owns an underwhelming .638 OPS on the season, is starting for only the second time in six games.
Jul 8 2021Murphy went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in a loss to the Yankees on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The backstop was responsible for nearly all of the Mariners' offensive output in the loss, notching two of the team's three hits and driving in three of its four runs. He knocked a three-run homer off Domingo German in the sixth inning that brought Seattle within a run. The long ball was his first since June 1 and pushed his season totals to seven homers and 19 RBI.
Jun 30 2021Murphy will serve as the Mariners' designated hitter and bat seventh Wednesday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 2-for-3 with a walk in Tuesday's 9-3 loss, Murphy will stick in the lineup for the third game in a row, but he had started in just four of the Mariners' nine contests prior to Sunday. Murphy appears to have at least temporarily moved behind Luis Torrens on the depth chart at catcher, though Murphy should still pick up a handful of starts per week.
Jun 26 2021Murphy isn't starting Saturday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy went 1-for-4 with a double, a hit by pitch, two runs and two strikeouts Friday, but he continues to alternate starts behind the plate. Luis Torrens will start at catcher and bat seventh.
Jun 23 2021Murphy isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy went 1-for-3 with a run and a strikeout Tuesday, but he continues to alternate starts behind the plate. Luis Torrens will start at catcher and bat sixth.
Jun 20 2021Murphy is out of the lineup Sunday against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy is 3-for-19 with five walks and eight strikeouts over his past six games and will receive the day off for the series finale. Luis Torrens will work behind the plate in his place.
Jun 18 2021Murphy is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy got a breather Wednesday before returning to the lineup for Thursday's series opener. He'll rest his legs once again Friday, with Luis Torrens set to catch Yusei Kikuchi.
Jun 16 2021Murphy is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Twins, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy started the past two games behind the plate and will receive the day off Wednesday. Jose Godoy will catch for Justus Sheffield and bat ninth.
Jun 13 2021Murphy is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Cleveland, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy will get his second day off in three days, with Jose Godoy set to bat ninth and catch Logan Gilbert in the series finale.
Jun 9 2021Murphy isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy had started in each of the last two games and went 2-for-8 with an RBI and three strikeouts during that time. Jose Godoy will start behind the plate and bat ninth.
Jun 3 2021Murphy, who went 1-for-3 in a loss to the Athletics on Wednesday, is hitting .333 (8-for-24) with two doubles, two home runs, five RBI, three walks and five runs across his last nine games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The surge has boosted Murphy's slash line from .127/.179/.304 to a still-abysmal-but-ascending .175/.232/.388. The veteran catcher has typically been a solid offensive contributor throughout his career, but he's split more playing time behind the dish than originally planned with the since-demoted Luis Torrens and Jose Godoy due to his struggles.
Jun 1 2021Murphy went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, walk and two strikeouts in a 12-6 loss to Oakland on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was having a pedestrian day until his eighth inning blast off Jake Diekman brought Seattle to within four runs of Oakland's lead. The backstop has been a boom-or-bust hitter this season with a .170/.229/.390 slash line but four doubles and six home runs on only 17 hits.
May 27 2021Murphy went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, an additional run and a walk in Thursday's 5-0 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy opened the scoring with his third inning solo shot off Texas starter Kolby Allard, walked in the fifth and singled and scored in the seventh for his second game reaching base three times this year. The backstop appeared primed for a prominent role after posting an .858 OPS in 2019 but has struggled to .157/.219/.371 line thus far.
May 26 2021Murphy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the bench for the third time in four games, Murphy doesn't seem to have as much of a stranglehold on the No. 1 catching job as expected following Luis Torrens' demotion to Triple-A Tacoma last week. Jose Godoy will instead get another start behind the plate over the struggling Murphy, who is sitting on a .185 on-base average over 92 plate appearances on the season.
May 24 2021Murphy isn't in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mariners will turn to a left-handed bat in Jose Godoy against a right-hander hurler Monday evening, resulting in a second straight day off for Murphy. Godoy is batting seventh in Murphy's absence.
May 23 2021Murphy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he's locked in as the Mariners' clear No. 1 catcher after Luis Torrens was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday, Murphy will still require at least a couple maintenance days per week. After starting each of the past three games behind the dish, Murphy will be rested Sunday in favor of Jose Godoy, who picks up his first big-league start.
May 18 2021Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Tigers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop was responsible for the Mariners' only run of the night in a surprisingly poor offensive effort against a lowly Detroit squad. His long ball represents one of the few bright spots for Murphy in May, as he's hitting just .120 (3-for-25) across eight games this month.
May 3 2021Murphy went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk as Seattle lost 5-3 to Baltimore on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy opened the scoring with his one-out home run in the fifth, but Baltimore would storm back with five runs in the eighth. He's slashing a disappointing .148/.207/.559.
May 2 2021Murphy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy had started each of the Mariners' last three games, with two turns coming at catcher and one at designated hitter. He appears to have forced his way into a timeshare behind the dish, but he'll take a seat Sunday in favor of Luis Torrens.
May 1 2021Murphy went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, a walk and two total RBI in a victory over the Angels on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy blasted a solo shot in the fourth inning to give Seattle a 4-3 lead, then capped the scoring for the Mariners with an RBI double in the eighth. The backstop is batting only .146 on the season, and Friday's performance snapped a nine-game skid during which he collected only one hit in 26 at-bats.
Apr 26 2021Murphy, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run in a loss to the Red Sox on Sunday, was 0-for-17 with a walk and two runs over the previous six games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop's season slash sits at an anemic .128/.171/.231 across 41 plate appearances heading into Monday night's series opener against the Astros. Murphy has just two total extra-base hits when factoring in Sunday's double as well, but his 41.7 percent hard hit rate and atypically low .174 BABIP imply the hits could start falling more often as the season unfolds. The saving grace for Murphy and his fantasy managers at the moment is that platoon mate Luis Torrens isn't offering much more with his bat, posting a .176/.236/.216 line in his own right across 55 PAs.
Apr 13 2021Murphy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 4-3 win over the Orioles in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took John Means deep in the second inning for his first homer of the year. Murphy has had a sluggish start to the year and ceded playing time to Luis Torrens in the process, but he appears to be turning things around at the plate, going 4-for-13 over his last four games.
Apr 12 2021Murphy, who went 0-for-5 in a win over the Twins on Sunday, is now sporting a .188 average that pales in comparison to platoon mate Luis Torrens' .333 figure. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy and Torrens -- the latter filling the designated hitter spot -- were actually both in the lineup Sunday, marking the second time they've both made appearances in the same game thus far. While Torrens delivered his second multi-hit effort in three games, Murphy generated his third hitless performance in five 2021 contests. It's early and the sample size is small, but the disparity between the two position mates is at least worth keeping an eye on with respect to how playing time between them behind the dish may be affected as the season unfolds.
Apr 3 2021Murphy will sit Saturday against San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy started behind the plate on Opening Day but has since gone on to sit twice in a row. Luis Torrens will make his second straight start in his absence.
Apr 2 2021Murphy is not in the lineup Friday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy started Thursday's season opener but will cede the catcher spot to Luis Torrens in the second game of the season. it may take some time to determine the exact playing-time breakdown between those two, though the fact that Murphy is already sitting for game two may indicate a fairly even split.
Mar 17 2021Murphy, starting at designated hitter for the second straight game, went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run, a walk and two runs overall in a Cactus League win over the Royals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop has ceded duties behind the dish to Luis Torrens the last two games while Murphy finishes recovering from a minor hip issue. The round tripper, part of a 15-hit barrage for Seattle, helped boost Murphy's spring average back over the Mendoza Line and marked his first time leaving the yard in exhibition play.
Mar 15 2021Murphy (hip) will return to the lineup Monday against Arizona, batting fourth and serving as the designated hitter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was scratched Sunday with what was later revealed to be a hip issue. While it may take a few more days for him to get back behind the plate, his readiness for Opening Day doesn't appear to be threatened.
Mar 14 2021Murphy was scratched from Sunday's spring game against the Brewers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: No injury has been announced, so it's unclear if it's just a late lineup change of if the 29-year-old is dealing with some sort of issue. Luis Torrens will start in his place and will benefit should Murphy be forced to miss any real time.
Mar 9 2021Murphy, who missed all of 2020 due to a foot injury, is 1-for-11 with a walk and four strikeouts across his first five Cactus League games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop understandably has some rust to shed after last seeing seeing game action during the early stages of last year's summer camp. Murphy is projected to fill the slightly longer side of a platoon behind the dish alongside Luis Torrens, with the former initially expected to log a bit more than half the playing time at catcher.
Feb 19 2021Murphy, who missed all of the 2020 season with a broken bone in his foot, is fully recovered but will have his workload closely monitored in spring training, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran backstop was a pleasant surprise for the Mariners back in 2019, putting up career bests in doubles (12), home runs (18), RBI (40), walks (19) and runs (32) while slashing .273/.324/.535 across 281 plate appearances. There were consequently high hopes for Murphy heading into 2020, but a fracture suffered from fouling the ball off his foot multiple times during summer camp last year led to the lost season. Luis Torrens (back), acquired from the Padres at last year's trade deadline, impressed over his brief time with the Mariners and is expected to also receive a solid amount of playing time behind the dish in the coming campaign.
Jan 15 2021Murphy signed a one-year, $875,000 contract with the Mariners on Friday to avoid arbitration. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was expected to start behind the plate for Seattle in 2020, but he missed the entirety of the season after fracturing his foot in July. Murphy is expected to work in a timeshare at catcher with Luis Torrens in 2021.
Dec 16 2020Murphy is fully healed from his foot injury and participating in full workouts, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy missed the entire 2020 season due to a lingering foot injury, but he's fully recovered and will be ready to participate in spring training. The 29-year-old is expected to operate in a timeshare with Luis Torrens in 2021 since Torrens performed well after being acquired by the Mariners at the trade deadline last year.
Sep 27 2020Murphy (foot) is expected back at full health next season and should operate in a timsehare with Luis Torrens (back) behind the dish, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy was shut down for good in mid-September after it become evident he would not be able to return from the broken bone he suffered in his left foot during summer camp. The veteran backstop should be back to full health by the time spring training rolls around, but he isn't likely to be ticketed for the high-volume role he was projected to fill in 2020; Torrens, acquired from the Padres at the trade deadline, performed well in a limited sample with the Mariners and figures to see a solid share of playing time in his own right next season.
Sep 19 2020Murphy (foot) was recently shut down in his recovery process and sent home by the Mariners, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy fractured his left foot during summer camp and was never able to make it back to game action during the shortened 2020 season. Although the 29-year-old was shut down for the remainder of this season, he could certainly be ready for the 2021 campaign as he should compete for playing time behind the plate.
Aug 31 2020Mariners manager Scott Servais said Monday that Murphy (foot) has yet to resume baseball activities, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though the Mariners dealt backstop Austin Nola to San Diego on Sunday, the move didn't foreshadow an impending return for Murphy, who appeared positioned to open the season as Seattle's top catcher before fracturing his left foot during summer camp. While his placement on the 45-day injured list makes him eligible to return in the first week of September, Murphy doesn't appear close to being ready for game action. Unless Murphy makes demonstrable progress in his recovery in the next week or two, he looks to be at risk of missing the entire season.
Aug 18 2020Murphy (foot) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old recently had a setback while recovering from the broken bone in his left foot and won't be eligible to be activated until Sept. 4, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com. Austin Nola should continue handling primary catching duties for the Mariners.
Aug 16 2020Murphy (foot) continues to make incremental progress while rehabbing at the team's alternate training site in Tacoma, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Scott Servais acknowledges the progress for Murphy is "maybe not as fast as he'd [Murphy] like" but confirms the veteran backstop is feeling better. Murphy remains without a timetable for return, however, and he'll likely need to corroborate he's capable of catching multiple innings in intrasquad games at the alternate training site before being activated.
Aug 5 2020Murphy (foot) is feeling better but doesn't have a timeline for his return, Lauren Smith of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old has apparently been able to take part in some light catching work, but it doesn't sound as though he's participating in rigorous workouts. Austin Nola should continue to see the bulk of the work behind the plate until Murphy can return from the left foot fracture.
Jul 24 2020Murphy (foot) doesn't have a timetable for a return to action, but manager Scott Servais noted Friday the backstop doesn't have to wear a boot, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Servais added that despite suffering from what is officially a fractured left foot, Murphy is only feeling discomfort when getting down in a catcher's squat and putting added pressure on his instep. While it's modestly good news Murphy doesn't appear to be in an overwhelming amount of pain, it still could still certainly be some time before the fracture heals completely.
Jul 23 2020The Mariners placed Murphy (foot) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction was made official shortly after the news broke that Murphy is dealing with a broken bone in his left foot, which he sustained after fouling a ball off of himself last week. The Mariners haven't provided an official timetable for Murphy's return, but his indefinite absence likely paves the way for Austin Nola to begin the season as the club's primary backstop.
Jul 22 2020Murphy has a broken bone in his foot and will begin the season on the injured list, Jen Mueller of ROOT Sports Northwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was poised to begin the season as the Mariners' starting catcher, but he fouled a ball off his foot on two separate occasions in summer camp and won't be available for Opening Day. GM Jerry Dipoto said he doesn't believe it will be a significant absence, but Murphy doesn't have an official timeline for his return. Aaron Nola is set to take over the starting role in the meantime.
Jul 16 2020Murphy (foot) went 1-for-2 with a walk while serving as the designated hitter for Thursday's intrasquad game, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Murphy was able to make a quick return after fouling a ball off his foot Tuesday, although manager Scott Servais opted to keep him limited to an offensive role Thursday. Murphy is still likely to draw a slight majority of the starts behind the dish this coming season, but Servais previously stated Austin Nola will get a fair share of playing time and the duo could also be complemented with prospects Cal Raleigh and Brian O'Keefe.
Jul 15 2020Murphy (foot) is not expected to practice Wednesday but could return Thursday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy fouled a ball off his foot during Tuesday's intrasquad game, the second time in eight days that he'd done so. The issue doesn't appear likely to threaten his readiness for Opening Day.
Jul 14 2020Murphy fouled a ball off his foot during Tuesday's intrasquad game and exited for good at the end of the inning, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The backstop had a similar incident occur July 6, and in that instance, he missed one day of summer camp workouts. Tuesday's foul ball caromed off the lower leg/foot area, and although Murphy was able to tough it out until the end of the frame, he was replaced in the following inning. An update on his condition is likely to come at some point Wednesday.
Jul 7 2020Murphy is back in practice Tuesday after X-rays on his foot were negative, Lauren Smith of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy fouled a ball off his foot Sunday and sat out Monday, but he's since been cleared to return. The one-day absence shouldn't meaningfully impact his readiness for the upcoming season.
Jul 6 2020Murphy is expected to skip workouts Monday after fouling a ball off his foot Sunday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy isn't expected to miss much time, as the issue isn't thought to be anything worse than a bruise. Barring setbacks, he should have plenty of time to get ready to serve as the Mariners' Opening Day catcher.
Apr 12 2020Murphy, one of the team's most diligent players with respect to fitness and this season's projected starting catcher, continues to work out in a variety of ways at home in West Monroe, New York while spring training is suspended, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old backstop headed home to the Empire State after the Mariners closed down their Peoria, Arizona spring training facility and continues to work out with the help of a weight room in his basement and outdoor regimens on his expansive property. Murphy did struggle at the plate during Cactus League play -- he hit just .176 (3-for-17) across nine exhibitions -- but he has the full confidence of manager Scott Servais due to his work ethic and the .273/.324/.535 line he generated during his 2019 debut campaign in Seattle. "I think everybody understands who Murph is," Servais said this spring. "Murph's about business, about bringing 100% effort every day. He does all the things you love your catcher to do, because right or wrong everybody is always looking at the catcher. He knows that and welcomes that."
Mar 4 2020Murphy has enjoyed a strong start to camp as he prepares to serve as the primary catcher this season, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran is being lauded for his leadership, veteran presence and relationship with the pitching staff, although Murphy still remains somewhat of an unknown quantity as a full-time player since he's never filled such a role over his first five big-league seasons. The 28-year-old does have a reputation for strong work ethic and preparation, with the latter especially important considering Murphy will serve as the battery mate to a pair of promising but raw young arms in Justus Sheffield and Justin Dunn this season. At the plate, Murphy will also look to improve his numbers versus right-handed pitchers after slashing just .211/.252/.401 against that handedness in 2019, although Johns notes righty bat Austin Nola, who generated a solid .275/.335/.413 line in same-handed matchups last season, could will draw some of those starts as Murphy's backup during the 2020 campaign.
Dec 5 2019Murphy will likely serve as the Mariners' primary catcher in 2020 after Omar Narvaez was traded to the Brewers on Thursday, ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy saw an increased role for the Mariners in 2019 even while working behind Narvaez, as he managed to appear in 76 games. Over the season, the 28-year-old hit .273/.324/.535 with 18 home runs and 40 RBI. Austin Nola will likely serve as the backup, but Murphy could gain fantasy relevance in deeper leagues in 2020 if he continues to produce.
Sep 14 2019Murphy went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in a loss to the White Sox on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy's breakout season at the plate looks like it's on its way to wrapping up in strong fashion, as the backstop now has a trio of multi-hit efforts over the eight games he's suited up for in September. Murphy's career-best .280 average and impressive .555 slugging percentage are largely comprised of his career-high 30 extra-base hits (12 doubles, one triple, 17 home runs), numbers he's generated in his first major-league campaign with more than 100 plate appearances.
Sep 7 2019Murphy went 1-for-3 with a two-run single in a loss to the Astros on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy opened the scoring on the night with his first-inning single that brought home both Austin Nola and Mallex Smith. The 28-year-old catcher is up to 38 RBI on the season, which adds to a slew of career-best figures that also includes 12 doubles and 17 home runs across 238 plate appearances.

Jul 21 2018Murphy recorded a solo home run in his only at-bat on Saturday against the Diamondbacks.Murphy entered the game in the eighth inning as a pinch-hitter and delivered the game-winning home run, his first of the season. He remains the backup catcher behind Chris Ianetta, seeing just 55 at-bats in 20 appearances as a result. He has recorded seven extra-base hits in his limited playing time, hinting at what he may be capable if given full-time at-bats.
Jul 10 2018Murphy was reinstated from the paternity list Tuesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Murphy missed the Rockies' weekend series against the Mariners while attending the birth of his child. He's back with the team Tuesday but will be on the bench, with Chris Iannetta starting behind the plate Tuesday.
Jul 6 2018Murphy was scratched from Friday's lineup against the Mariners to be with his wife for the birth of their child, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Tony Wolters figures to replace Murphy until he returns to the team. He'll be placed on the paternity list and should return for Tuesday's series opener against Arizona.
Jul 6 2018Murphy was a late scratch from Friday's lineup against the Mariners, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. It is unclear why Murphy was scratched. Tony Wolters will slot in behind the dish, hitting ninth.
Jun 28 2018Murphy is not in the lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Giants.Murphy will take a seat for the second straight day and for the fourth time in the last seven games, with Tony Wolters garnering the start behind the plate. The 27-year-old has a .317/.333/.439 slash line with 17 strikeouts in 41 at-bats since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on June 12.
Jun 27 2018Murphy is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Giants, Jenny Cavnar of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. He will sit for the third time in the last six games. Murphy is hitting .325/.341/.450 with zero home runs and a 39 percent strikeout rate in 40 at-bats since joining the big-league club. Chris Iannetta is starting behind the dish and hitting seventh against lefty Madison Bumgarner.
Jun 23 2018Murphy is out of the lineup against Miami on Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Murphy will take a seat after going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI during Friday's victory. In his absence, Tony Wolters will catch Tyler Anderson.
Jun 22 2018Murphy went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run in the Rockies' 11-3 win over the Marlins on Friday.Starting his second game in three days, Murphy put up another solid offensive performance with this three-hit, two RBI effort. It's still an extremely small sample size, but the 27-year-old backstop has impressed over his 32 at-bats, hitting .344, lacing four doubles and driving in six runs. If he continues to perform like this, he'll make a case for more at-bats, although teammate Chris Iannetta is also having a respectable season at the plate, and would likely stand in the way of Murphy starting frequently enough to put up consistent fantasy value.
Jun 21 2018Murphy is not in the lineup Thursday against the Mets, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Murphy went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's win -- his fifth start in six gamers -- but he'll hit the bench with a southpaw (Steven Matz) starting for the Mets in this one. Chris Iannetta will start behind the dish and hit sixth in his stead.
Jun 19 2018Murphy is not starting Tuesday against the Mets.Since getting called up June 12, Murphy has started six times in seven games. He's a solid 6-for-23 over that stretch, though he went hitless in his last two games including a three-strikeout performance Monday. Chris Iannetta will start behind the plate Tuesday.
Jun 17 2018Murphy will start at catcher and bat eighth Sunday against the Rangers, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Murphy earned his way back to the big leagues after bashing 32 extra-base hits in 209 plate appearances in 209 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque and has continued his offensive surge with Colorado. He has already collected six hits -- two of which were doubles -- in 16 at-bats through four starts. Murphy will be behind the plate for the fourth time in six contests Sunday and looks like he may act as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher so long as he keeps impressing at the dish.
Jun 12 2018Murphy joined the Rockies on Tuesday and is starting behind the plate against the Phillies, batting eighth, Kyle Newman of the Denver Post reports. The 27-year-old will make his 2018 big-league debut after raking to the tune of .289/.359/.642 with 16 homers in 49 games with Triple-A Albuquerque to open the season. It's not clear what Murphy's role will be right out of the gates, but it's possible he overtakes Chris Iannetta in short order with Iannetta struggling to provide much value with the bat (.403 SLG). Certainly in two-catcher leagues, Murphy has some appeal, and he may even be worth a speculative add in one-catcher mixed leagues given the Coors upside.
Jun 11 2018Murphy is slashing .295/.366/.656 with 16 home runs and 45 RBI through 48 games with Triple-A Albuquerque this season. When the Rockies signed Chris Iannetta over the offseason, it effectively put Murphy and Tony Wolters into a competition to be the backup backstop for Colorado. Wolters won the job out of spring training, but things may have worked out better for Murphy as a result. He's striking out over nine percent less at Triple-A than last season, and he's walking at his highest rate since 2015. To add onto that, the .360 ISO he produced to start the season is his best mark at any level with more than 50 plate appearances. Iannetta and Wolters are perhaps better receivers behind the plate, but Murphy offers significantly more upside with the bat. With nothing more to prove at Triple-A, the 27-year-old seems like a good bet to get a shot at big-league catching duties at some point later this season.
Mar 18 2018Murphy (head) is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Murphy is set to re-enter the lineup after being lifted from Thursday's contest after taking a shot to the head for an opposing batter. The issue was never deemed serious, so he'll head back to the field where he'll battle with Tony Wolters for reserve catching duties on the Opening Day roster.
Mar 17 2018Murphy (head) is expected to play in Sunday's Cactus League game, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Murphy was removed from Thursday's spring training game after being hit in the helmet on a backswing, but the issue was never thought to be overly serious and he's set to return to action after taking a couple of days off to rest and recover. The soon-to-be 27-year-old is competing for a spot on the Rockies' Opening Day roster as a reserve catcher.
Mar 15 2018Murphy was removed from Thursday's spring training game as a precaution after being hit in the helmet on a backswing, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Murphy took a shot to the head from an opposing batter during Thursday's game, so the Rockies opted to remove the backstop just to be safe. Manager Bud Black downplayed Murphy's removal and said that he should be OK moving forward.
Mar 15 2018Murphy was removed from Thursday's spring game with an apparent injury, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The specifics of the injury remain unclear, but Murphy appeared to take a shot to his helmet on a backswing prior to exiting the contest. More should be known following the conclusion of Thursday's Cactus League game. In the meantime, consider him day-to-day.
Feb 12 2018Murphy is expected to be in the mix for backup catching duties to start the 2018 season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Murphy was expected to be in the mix for the starting gig in 2017, but injuries incurred during spring training and struggles in the minors kept him from ever garnering that role. Now that Chris Iannetta is in the fold, it seems that the prospect will need to settle for backup duties for now. His main competition is Tony Wolters, although Murphy seems to possess more offensive potential given his raw power ability. Regardless, Murphy will need to show that 2017 was simply a fluke if he wants to regain his high standing in the organization.
Oct 3 2017Murphy went hitless in four at-bats following his September callup. The catching prospect saw little playing time down the stretch with the Rockies in the thick of the playoff race, but that was just the cherry on top to a disappointing season. Expected by many to move into the starting catcher role at some point in 2017, he wound up getting hurt during spring training and struggling at the plate in the minors. Heading into 2018, Murphy still looks like a candidate to assume full-time catching duties, but he'll need to show that this past season was simply a fluke and not a sign of things to come.
Sep 1 2017Murphy was recalled by the Rockies on Friday.Murphy joins the wave of September call-ups for Colorado, and returns to the team ahead of this weekend's series with the Diamondbacks. During eight appearances with the Rockies this season, Murphy went 1-for-20 at the plate. He figures to slide in as the third catcher on the depth chart behind Jonathan Lucroy and Tony Wolters.
Jun 15 2017Murphy (forearm) was activated from the disabled list and is starting at catcher Thursday against the Giants, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. While it was originally reported that Murphy would return sometime next week, it appears the Rockies were pleased enough with his rehab assignment at Triple-A Albuquerque to bring him back early. The 26-year-old went 12-for-24 with seven RBI over his last five rehab games, including a 3-for-5 effort with five RBI in his most recent outing. He'll take the place of Ryan Hanigan on the active roster, while Murphy will likely enter a timeshare with Tony Wolters behind the dish for the time being.
Jun 13 2017Manager Bud Black said that Murphy (forearm) could return in "a week to 10 days," Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Murphy has been tearing it up in the minors during his rehab assignment, batting .375 in 26 plate appearances at Triple-A Albuquerque. Although the catching prospect is nearing a return to action, the Rockies have a tough decision on their hands once he's activated. Ryan Hanigan has been performing well at the plate and has been heralded for his ability to manage Colorado's young pitching staff, so it's not a sure thing that Murphy would knock him off the big-league roster upon his return. Murphy does have a minor-league option, but Black hinted that Murphy will get his fair shake in the big leagues at some point this season. "Murphy was going to play a lot {out of spring training}," he said. "He showed some power with his bat and we liked how he caught games last year." If Murphy does receive a spot with the Rockies immediately, he would likely enter a timeshare behind the plate with incumbent backstop Tony Wolters and knock Ryan Hanigan off the roster. The Rockies must make a decision on this front by June 23, which is the latest date Murphy can return from the disabled list.
Jun 5 2017Murphy (forearm) caught back-to-back games for Triple-A Albuquerque over the weekend, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. This is a big step for the catching prospect, as it seems like he's nearly ready for full action with the big-league club. Murphy is scheduled to appear in another rehab game with the Isotopes on Tuesday, and if all goes well, it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to the Rockies by the end of the week.
Jun 1 2017Murphy (forearm) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports.Murphy, who has been sidelined since spring training with a hairline fracture in his forearm, caught in an extended spring training game for the first time since sustaining the injury. He's expected to catch in another extended spring game Thursday, and if all goes well, he'll head out on a rehab assignment with Albuquerque after a taking Friday off. The Rockies haven't specified how many rehab games Murphy will play, but they'll likely play things by ear following each contest. He still appears to be on track to return to the big club in mid June.
May 30 2017Murphy (forearm) has participated as the DH in back-to-back games in extended spring training, but is not yet catching in games, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. He was in Tuesday's game for five innings as the DH. Murphy will inevitably head out on a rehab assignment once he is able to handle the rigors of catching and hitting for an entire game. Look for him to return to the Rockies in mid June.
May 26 2017Murphy (forearm) could begin a rehab assignment next week, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. No word has come forth as to how many rehab games the catching prospect will play, but the Rockies will likely play things by ear as he completes each contest. Murphy has been out since spring training due to a hairline fracture in his forearm, and although his recovery has taken longer than expected, it seems like a return is on the horizon.
May 17 2017Murphy (forearm) threw Tuesday and is close to taking batting practice once again, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. His recovery process is taking a bit longer than initially expected, but there seems to be a return on the horizon for Murphy. No firm timetable for his return has been revealed, although things should clear up as he progresses further.
May 15 2017Manager Bud Black stated that Murphy (forearm) is "closer than you think" to returning from the disabled list, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. He hasn't progressed to catching bullpen sessions yet, but this vote of confidence is still a promising sign for the prospect catcher. Given how much time he's missed, Murphy will likely need to go on a rehab assignment once he's gotten back to baseball activities, and although no official timetable has been revealed, Black's comments seem to point toward a return date somewhere in the next couple weeks.
May 3 2017Murphy (forearm) is now wearing a soft cast on his ailing forearm after a bone scan revealed less healing than expected, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. The scan showed some improvement, but this certainly isn't the news the Rockies wanted to hear. Murphy was hoping to get back to baseball activities earlier this week, but with his healing process going slowly, he'll likely need to wait another week or so before that becomes a possibility again. This news comes at an especially bad time, as Tony Wolters (concussion) will likely also miss some time after taking a bat to the head Tuesday, leaving Dustin Garneau as the lone catcher on the 40-man roster.
Apr 29 2017Murphy (forearm) underwent a CT scan Friday and could resume baseball activities Monday if the results are promising, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The catching prospect has been out since mid-March due to a hairline fracture in his right forearm, but a little over a month of rest seems to have done the trick for the healing process. Murphy will likely need a decent number of rehab innings prior to his return due to how early in the spring the injury occurred, but this news seems to show that he's on track to return within the four-to-six week timetable initially offered by team doctors.
Apr 28 2017Murphy (forearm) will receive a bone scan Friday in Arizona to assess the healing progress of his broken right wrist, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. The backstop's last significant update came about two weeks ago, when it was reported he was not yet doing fielding drills. Murphy could return in the coming weeks to throw his hat in an already crowded Rockies catcher pool, though his performance against live pitching and eventually minor-league hurlers will determine his immediate timetable. Still, in deep two-catcher fantasy leagues, he's a useful stash for his offensive potential at hitter-friendly Coors Field in the event he runs away with majority playing time.
Apr 14 2017Murphy (forearm) remains in a thumb-extending brace and has not done fielding drills as of Thursday, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. The goal was to immobilize the injury as long as possible, so he still may have time to return before the end of April. Still, optimism will increase when Murphy starts to ramp up baseball activities and log rehab appearances.
Apr 11 2017Murphy (forearm) recently underwent a CT scan, but the Rockies haven't disclosed the results, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports.Murphy was forced to open the season on the 10-day disabled list after he fractured his right hand when it made contact with the bat of the Cubs' Kris Bryant in a March 11 Cactus League game. The 26-year-old is still using a brace to protect the hand, but he could be cleared to remove it in the coming days if the scans revealed that he's healing as expected. Once the brace is off, Murphy would still likely require multiple weeks to test out the hand in fielding and throwing drills, batting practice and rehab games before the Rockies would consider activating him from the 10-day disabled list.
Apr 6 2017Murphy (forearm) will undergo testing Monday to assess how his fracture is healing, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports.Murphy suffered a fractured forearm in mid-March, with his recovery timetable estimated at four-to-six weeks. Rockies manager Bud Black said the catcher has ramped up his exercise program, but a return still shouldn't be expected any sooner than mid-to-late April. Tony Wolters started behind the plate in each of the team's first three games, going 2-for-10 with a pair of singles and a walk. Murphy figures to get most of the playing time against southpaws once he's available, but Wolters likely will make most of the starts versus right-handers.
Apr 2 2017Murphy (forearm) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday.Murphy continues to work his way back from the hairline fracture of his right forearm that he sustained in mid-March. He'll likely share catching duties with Tony Wolters upon his return. He should hopefully be back sometime during April.
Mar 14 2017Murphy will miss 4-to-6 weeks with a hairline fracture of his right forearm, MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports. He was hit by Anthony Rizzo's bat during the first inning of Saturday's game, yet remained in, so this news comes as a shock. Murphy's injury wasn't healing, so he went for tests this week that discovered the fracture. He should open the year on the disabled list; as such, Dustin Garneau figures to break camp on the active roster, spelling Tony Wolters against southpaws until Murphy is ready to return.
Feb 17 2017Rockies manager Bud Black said that Murphy and Tony Wolters will have "shared duties" behind the plate in 2017, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Murphy certainly has more offensive upside than Wolters, but Black was insistent that both offense and defense would play a big role in who would play on a given day. Black also added that it's unrealistic to expect either catcher to put together a 130-game season, so fantasy owners should expect a fairly flexible timeshare behind the plate heading into 2017, which may decrease both backstops' values.
Sep 8 2016Murphy went 2-for-4 with his second home run Wednesday in a win against the Giants.Through his first 11 at-bats in the majors this year, Murphy's racked up six hits. He made a strong debut last season, and any Rockies hitter is worth owning when he's in the lineup consistently. Unfortunately, Murphy's just one man in a three-catcher rotation right now, so he'll need to win more regular starts before meriting a pickup for the stretch run.
Sep 2 2016Murphy was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Murphy kicked the door in at Albuquerque, slashing .327/.361/.647 with 19 homers in just 80 games (322 plate appearances). The 25-year-old does come with some injury concerns, having dealt with shoulder issues and more recently an oblique strain, but he will continue to play in a favorable hitting environment and could end up wrestling away a sizable chunk of the workload from Nick Hundley.
Aug 23 2016Murphy, 25, is hitting .366 with two home runs and seven RBI over his last 10 games for Triple-A Albuquerque.Murphy is having a stellar 2016 campaign, slashing .322/.352/.648 with 17 home runs and 54 RBI in 71 contests. Nick Hundley and Tony Wolters have been adequate behind the plate at the big league level, but Murphy could get called up in September if the Rockies need an extra power bat.
Jul 23 2016Murphy, 25, is slashing .296/.320/.640 with 13 homers and a 59:7 K:BB in 186 at-bats with Triple-A Albuquerque this season. He is putting on quite the power display in the Pacific Coast League this year, although his 31.1 percent K-rate is troublesome. A catching prospect who can sustain a .335 ISO at Triple-A warrants monitoring in deeper formats, but it's unclear when the Rockies will be willing to recall Murphy, or if his hit tool will allow his impressive power to play against big league pitching.
May 12 2016Murphy (oblique) has returned to action with Triple-A Albuquerque, and is slashing .273/.304/.591 with one home run through six games.Murphy was a trendy cheap catcher in two-catcher formats this year, and he still has time to make good on that flyer. With Nick Hundley (oblique) on the big league DL, Tony Wolters and Dustin Garneau are manning the catcher position for the Rockies, so Murphy should get a shot fairly soon if he continues to hit at Triple-A
May 4 2016Murphy (oblique) is playing games at extended spring training and could rejoin the Triple-A squad soon, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Murphy hasn't been able to appear in a game yet with Triple-A Albuquerque due to the oblique strain, but it appears that he's progressed very well through the rehab process. Unfortunately, he may be locked in the minors for the time being despite his upper-prospect status due to the success of major league backup catcher Tony Wolters.
May 25 2015Murphy is hitting with .294 to go along with a .373 on-base percentage, eight homers, and 27 RBI over 161 plate appearances at Double-A New Britain. After missing most of last season to tend to a shoulder injury, Murphy has looked rejuvenated during his time in 2015 with the Rockies' new Double-A affiliate. As the lofty OBP would suggest, Murphy has drawn walks at a high clip, though he's still striking out in nearly 25 percent of his plate appearances. That could portend some difficulties once he reaches the Triple-A level or majors, but Murphy's power-hitting tool and good batting eye nonetheless make him the Rockies' most intriguing catching prospect. With Nick Hundley signed through the end of the 2016 season at a modest $3 million annually, Murphy certainly isn't blocked from assuming the top catching job should his abilities eventually carry him to the big club.
Nov 13 2014Murphy (shoulder) has spent the offseason working off in Boston and is back to throwing at 100 percent, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.Viewed as the Rockies' best catching prospect heading into the 2014 season, Murphy was limited to just 27 games at Double-A Tulsa due to the injury, never suiting up after mid-May. It sounds like he'll be fully healthy for spring training, but the 23-year-old is on track for a repeat year at Tulsa to make up for the lost development time. He wasn't exactly thriving offensively before the injury set in, slashing just .213/.321/.415.
Jun 10 2014Murphy, who exited a May 15 game with shoulder stiffness, according to Purple Row, hasn't made an appearance for Double-A Tulsa since and is currently on the 7-day DL.Murphy had been struggling to start the year, with just a .213 average, but he does have five homers in 27 games for the Drillers and remains one of the most intriguing catching prospects in baseball, having totaled an impressive .289/.376/.571 batting line in the minors last year. The team has been pretty quiet about Murphy's status, so his return date remains uncertain.
Mar 17 2014Murphy was reassigned to minor league camp Saturday, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports.Murphy wasn't expected to break camp with the Rockies even though he showed ample power during spring training. He's likely ticketed for duty at Double-A Tulsa to begin this season, but could earn a late-season call-up to the Rockies if he thrives in the minors.
Jun 25 2013Murphy went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run for Low-A Asheville on Monday.Murphy continues to absolutely destroy the South Atlantic League. He has 44 extra-base hits and 53 RBI in just 51 games. Murphy could be promoted to High-A any day now.
