There's no word as to who will be sent down to make room for the second baseman on the major league roster, although it may not be much of an issue considering he could very well be sent back to the minors once Alex Rodriguez (hamstring) returns from the disabled list Thursday. Regardless, Refsnyder may be limited in his time with New York as long as Starlin Castro keeps impressing as the Yankees' everyday second baseman.
Jul 11 2015Refsnyder has been called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he's in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Newsday's Erik Boland reports.With the Red Sox tossing lefties Saturday and Sunday, the Yankees called Refsnyder up to start over Stephen Drew at second base. The 24-year-old won't necessarily stick around past the All-Star break in his first big-league stint, but his strong production at the Triple-A level suggests he could be of some use to the team. Drew has been vastly improved since the end of May, but his lifetime track record against left-handed pitching is undeniably ugly. Refsnyder is a right-handed batter, and he owns a .290/.387/.412 slash line for Triple-A Scranton, with the same number of strikeouts and walks (44) through 363 plate appearances. He also has seven homers and 10 steals in 81 games, rounding out what appears to be a pretty diverse skill set.

His .387 OBP is the third-best in the International League, and he's also chipped in seven homers and 10 stolen bases (11 attempts). With lefties due up for Boston on Saturday and Sunday, it sounds like Refsnyder will supplant Stephen Drew at second base for the final two games of the series.

However, hitting was never the issue for Refsnyder, who continues to struggle in the field and has been passed over in favor of Jose Pirela in recent weeks. Still, if Refsnyder continues to hit at this rate, the Bronx Bombers will eventually be forced to find a place for him.

He hit .333 with the club this spring, and will look to carry that momentum into opening day in the minors. With Brendan Ryan (calf) on the shelf for the foreseeable future, the team instead acquired Gregorio Petit from the Astros to fill the reserve infielder role.
