Aug 16 2023 | Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) has been shut down again, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi resumed baseball activities at the beginning of August and had recently advanced to facing live pitching, but his surgically-repaired left knee is apparently barking again. The 28-year-old speedster hasn't appeared in a game at any level this season, and time is running out for him to do so in 2023. |
Aug 15 2023 | Mondesi (knee) has progressed to facing live pitching at the Red Sox's spring training complex in Florida, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He's also been running and taking grounders and it's possible Mondesi could be ready to play in games within a couple weeks. Mondesi just recently came back from a lengthy shutdown period as he worked to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, and it appears he's finally making some real progress. Joining the Red Sox before the end of the season has not been ruled out, but Mondesi still has plenty of hurdles to clear. |
Aug 7 2023 | Mondesi was spotted taking grounders, hitting and running Monday, Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been shut down from all baseball activity since June 13 while working to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, so this is a significant step in the right direction. However, the Red Sox have been quiet about a timetable for his return, making it unclear whether the 28-year-old could get back on the field before the 2023 campaign ends. |
Jul 5 2023 | Mondesi (knee) remains shut down from baseball activities, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox made the decision three weeks ago to shut Mondesi down from baseball activities as he worked on regaining strength in his surgically repaired left knee. Evidently, the club isn't satisfied that he's made enough progress in that area, so the shutdown remains. Mondesi's timetable is open-ended. |
Jun 14 2023 | Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) hasn't suffered a setback but rather is still working to regain strength in his surgically repaired left knee, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bloom was addressing reporters one day after it was reported that Mondesi has been shut down from all baseball activities. He noted that the team has "been working hard to get strength back in that leg" so that Mondesi can progress to game action, but "there's been this recurrent soreness" that hasn't allowed it to happen, so the club is hitting the pause button. Mondesi almost certainly isn't going to come back before the All-Star break at this point, if he makes it back at all this season. |
Jun 13 2023 | Mondesi (knee) was shut down from all baseball activity Tuesday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been on the 60-day injured list since the beginning of the season due to the ACL tear he suffered last season. His rehab process has been slow, and although Mondesi has been without a return timeline all season, pausing all baseball activities will likely push back his season debut even further. |
May 31 2023 | Mondesi (knee) remains limited to drills in extended spring training and does not appear close to playing in games, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that it's a matter of pain tolerance at this point with Mondesi's surgically repaired left knee. "He's having good days and bad days," said Cora. "I don't want to think for him, but it's probably 'I don't feel comfortable doing this,' and then you have slow down. Structurally, he came (to Boston), they checked him out, there was imaging and all that stuff and everything looked good, so..." Cora also acknowledged of Mondesi that "there was some imbalance as far as his strength and legs and all of that. It's more than just the rehab." Mondesi remains without a timetable for return and when he is cleared for game action he'll surely need a lengthy rehab assignment. At this point, it doesn't seem likely that he'll be back prior to the All-Star break. |
May 12 2023 | Mondesi (knee) underwent a checkup in Boston last week, and he's still not ready to begin a rehab assignment at this time, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The positive news is that all was OK in Mondesi's checkup, and he continues to ramp up his activities. Unfortunately for Mondesi and fantasy managers, he's still not ready to get back on the field and face live hitting, and there's no timetable for when that will occur. Mondesi is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list June 1, but it's very likely the speedy infielder will need more time before he's ready to contribute for the Red Sox. |
May 3 2023 | Mondesi (knee) is headed to Boston to visit a doctor before determining the next step in his rehab process, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been going through the same hitting and fielding routine he's had for several weeks but hasn't played in any games yet. It sounds like a clearer timetable for the infielder could be available soon. |
Mar 30 2023 | The Red Sox placed Mondesi (knee) on the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As a result of the transaction, Mondesi will come off the 40-man roster and won't be eligible to make his Boston debut until at least late May. The Red Sox have been vague about a potential timetable for Mondesi to resume playing while he continues his recovery from the ACL tear he suffered last year. He'll be in the mix at second base once healthy, but for now, Christian Arroyo will hold down the keystone. |
Mar 17 2023 | Mondesi (knee) will not play in any Grapefruit League games this spring, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic on Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things had been pointing in that direction for a while now. Cora also added that there remains no timetable for Mondesi's return as he works his way back from last year's ACL tear. The infielder continues to work out and seems to be progressing fine, but fantasy managers should count on him missing at least the first month or so of the season. Christian Arroyo is in line for starts at second base. |
Mar 8 2023 | Mondesi (knee) hit outside and fielded grounders Tuesday in Red Sox camp, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Red Sox manager Alex Cora called it another "good day" for the rehabbing speedster. Mondesi is doubtful for the start of the 2023 regular season as he completes his recovery from ACL surgery last May, but he's generally trending in a positive direction and should again be an intriguing fantasy option as soon he's deemed fit to join the active roster in Boston. |
Mar 6 2023 | Mondesi (knee) will undergo follow-up tests Monday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The goal of the tests is simply to get a better idea as to how Mondesi's recovery from a torn left ACL is going. The infielder has been hitting and taking grounders lately, although not on an everyday basis. Mondesi is not expected to be ready for Opening Day, but we could find out more regarding his timetable following Monday's tests. |
Feb 28 2023 | Mondesi (knee) took regular batting practice Monday for the first time since last May's ACL surgery, Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been going through some baseball activities for a little while now but this is the first time he took some rounds of BP on the field in 10 months. He has yet to participate in team defensive drills or run at max effort. Opening Day is considered a long shot, but Mondesi should be able to get into some Grapefruit League games in March. |
Feb 19 2023 | Mondesi (knee) has started baseball activities with hitting and fielding drills but is still ramping up his running progression, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi's rehab is expected to keep him out of the lineup when Opening Day rolls around, which means manager Alex Cora will deploy Enrique Hernandez at shortstop and Christian Arroyo at second base. Once Mondesi is healthy, there could be a rotation of the three players at the two positions until Trevor Story (elbow, 60-day IL) is ready to play. |
Jan 24 2023 | The Red Sox acquired Mondesi (knee) along with a player to be named later from the Royals on Tuesday in exchange for Josh Taylor, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Enrique Hernandez remains the likely starter at shortstop, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican, and Mondesi should be in the mix for playing time at both shortstop and second base. However, Mondesi isn't fully recovered from the ACL surgery he underwent last May and isn't guaranteed to be ready for Opening Day, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Injuries have obviously been the 27-year-old's big bugaboo, but this looks like a small price to pay for the Red Sox for a player with some upside. Mondesi will make $3.05 million in 2023 and is slated to hit free agency next winter. |
May 20 2022 | Mondesi (knee) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee last week, so it was only a matter of time before he moved to the 60-day IL. Mondesi isn't expected to return this season while going through an extensive recovery. |
May 11 2022 | The Royals revealed Wednesday that Mondesi (knee) underwent successful surgery last week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi was diagnosed with a torn ACL in late April, and he'll now begin his lengthy recovery process following his successful procedure. The 26-year-old is expected to require 6-to-9 months to recover, so he'll likely miss the remainder of the season. Nicky Lopez has served as Kansas City's primary shortstop since Mondesi sustained his injury. |
Apr 26 2022 | Mondesi was removed from Tuesday's game against the White Sox with left knee discomfort, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old suffered the injury during the sixth inning while returning to first base on a pickoff attempt, and he was promptly lifted for a pinch runner. Mondesi continues to be evaluated, but manager Mike Matheny said the initial scans of the injury are encouraging, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com. |
Apr 24 2022 | Mondesi went 0-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases in a 5-4 loss Sunday in Seattle. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi walked and stole second in the seventh and added another stolen base as the automatic runner in the 12th. He struck out in his other four plate appearances. The positives for the shortstop this season are that he is 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts and has yet to make an error. Other than that, his .301 OPS and nearly 40 percent strikeout rate are providing little, if not negative, offensive value. |
Apr 14 2022 | Mondesi went 0-for-3 with two stolen bases, a run and a walk in a 4-2 loss Thursday against Detroit. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi reached on a force play in the second and walked and scored in the fourth, stealing a base in both cases. The speedy shortstop now has three stolen bases on the season, all of them coming in the last three games. After spending the majority of his time at third base last season, the 26-year-old has started at short in every game in 2022, hitting seventh in the lineup in all but one game. |
Apr 11 2022 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 10-7 loss to the Guardians. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a rough opening series of the season for Mondesi, who went 2-for-14 with six strikeouts, a steal, one RBI and one run scored. The shortstop has also regularly hit seventh in the order, providing him fewer opportunities at the plate, and thus less chances to make an impact with his legs on the basepaths. He's recorded no less than 15 stolen bases in each of the last four years despite not playing in more than 102 games in any of those seasons. |
Apr 10 2022 | Mondesi went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk in Saturday's 1-0 extra-inning win over the Guardians. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His first hit of the season was of the walkoff variety, plating Kyle Isbel in the 10th inning. Through two games, Mondesi has hit seventh in the order -- the arrival of Bobby Witt has forced Mondesi down the lineup. The shortstop has also struck out in four of his seven plate appearances so far. The bigger concern is fewer opportunities to run for the 26-year-old, though the Royals again have a lineup that should embrace a bold strategy on the basepaths. |
Mar 21 2022 | Mondesi agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract with Kansas City on Monday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi struggled to stay healthy a season ago, and with his contract now in order, he can focus on his play. It's already been reported early in camp that he's in line for the starting job at shortstop, though the Royals may also elect to give him looks around the infield given the squad's versatility. It'll also be worth keeping an eye on whether Kansas City plans to grant Mondesi regular rest, given his past injuries. |
Mar 16 2022 | Mondesi is viewed as the Royals' top shortstop heading into the 2022 season, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi struggled through another injury-plagued campaign last year. He was limited to just 35 games, where he slashed .230/.271/.452 with 15 stolen bases and six home runs. He moved around the infield at times and settled in as the third baseman by the end of 2021. With the versatile Whit Merrifield available, the Royals have plenty of different looks they can roll out -- if Mondesi is the primary shortstop throughout the season, Nicky Lopez would likely play second base and top prospect Bobby Witt could be begin his major-league career at the hot corner. |
Oct 3 2021 | Mondesi went 0-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 7-3 loss to Minnesota. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old ended 2021 with 15 steals in 16 attempts in just 35 games. Mondesi battled oblique and hamstring issues for much of the season, prompting a move to third base for much of September. He was held without a hit in six of his last 10 games, dropping his season slash line to .230/.271/.452 with six home runs, 17 RBI, 19 runs scored, a triple and eight doubles across 136 plate appearances. Mondesi may continue to log time at third base in 2022. He could also receive regular rest to help alleviate some of the toll of playing the field, although fantasy managers will obviously take notice of his speed when he's in the lineup. |
Sep 29 2021 | Mondesi is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll get a routine maintenance day while Hanser Alberto checks in for him at third base. Over 21 games since returning from the injured list Sept. 1, Mondesi is slashing a meager .187/.237/.307, but he's worthy of a roster spot in every league thanks to a 13-for-13 success rate on stolen-base attempts. |
Sep 27 2021 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Monday's 8-3 loss to Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While it was Mondesi's first theft in his last five games, the infielder has now recorded 13 stolen bases in September. He's 14-for-15 on the basepaths this year while adding a .252/.292/.495 slash line across 116 plate appearances in an injury-riddled season, although a move to third base and regular rest has kept him in good shape recently. |
Sep 22 2021 | Mondesi isn't starting Wednesday's game against Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games after he went 1-for-4 with three strikeouts Tuesday. Hanser Alberto will start at the hot corner and bat seventh. |
Sep 20 2021 | Mondesi will sit for the second half of Monday's doubleheader against Cleveland, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi went 1-for-3 and scored a run in the afternoon contest. The Royals have been very careful not to overwork him down the stretch, so it's no surprise to see that he won't be asked to start twice in one day. Hanser Alberto will take over at third base. |
Sep 19 2021 | Mondesi went 2-for-5 with a double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base in an 8-1 win over Seattle on Saturday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi twice used his speed to help the Royals add on to their run total. In the first inning, he notched an infield single that allowed Andrew Benintendi to cross the plate. In the third, he doubled, stole third and came around to score on a Michael Taylor double. Mondesi's theft was his third in four games, pushing his total to 10 on the campaign. The speedster has notched double-digit steals in each of the past four seasons. |
Sep 17 2021 | Mondesi will sit Friday against the Mariners. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Royals have been very careful not to overwork Mondesi since he returned from an oblique injury at the start of September. He's yet to start more than two games in a row in the field, with the team giving him frequent rest either as the designated hitter or on the bench. He'll occupy a bench spot this time around, with Hanser Alberto starting at third base. |
Sep 16 2021 | Mondesi went 0-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Wednesday's 12-10 loss to Oakland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The infielder has now stolen bases in consecutive games after going five contests without a theft. Mondesi is 9-for-10 on the basepaths in 21 games this season. He's posted a .253/.291/.560 slash line with six home runs, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored across 81 plate appearances. While he was initially eased back into the lineup since returning from an oblique injury, he'll make his fourth straight start Thursday while manning the hot corner and batting fifth. Mondesi will likely continue to benefit from the occasional day as the designated hitter to relieve some of the injury risk of playing the field. |
Sep 15 2021 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 10-7 win over Oakland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has struggled a bit since returning from his most recent oblique injury, going just 6-for-36 with 16 strikeouts in his last 10 games. Despite the poor hitting, he's swatted two home runs and stolen seven bases in that span while settling in as Kansas City's primary third baseman. Injuries have made this a mostly lost season for the infielder, who has a .264/.284/.583 slash line across just 76 plate appearances. |
Sep 13 2021 | Mondesi went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 5-3 win over the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi led off the second inning by taking Baily Ober deep to right field to put the Royals up 2-1. The home run ball snapped an 0-for-17 drought at the plate for the speedster and it was his second home run since returning from the injured list Sept. 1. The 25-year-old is now slashing .265/.286/.603 with six homers, 13 RBI, 11 runs scored, seven steals and 2:25 BB:K over 72 plate appearances. |
Sep 11 2021 | Mondesi is not in Saturday's lineup against the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is 0-for-16 with eight strikeouts and two steals over his last five games. The Royals will continue to give him days off over the final three weeks in an effort to keep him healthy. Hanser Alberto starts at third base in his stead. |
Sep 6 2021 | Mondesi didn't get the start Monday but stole two bases after pinch running for Hunter Dozier in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over the Orioles. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Dozier drew a one-out walk, Mondesi replaced him at first base and tried to generate an insurance run with his legs, but Whit Merrifield and Nicky Lopez weren't able to bring him around once he got into scoring position. Mondesi now has six steals in four games since rejoining the Royals' roster at the beginning of the month in addition to going 4-for-13 at the plate with a homer, three RBI and four runs. The 26-year-old may not play every day as Kansas City tries to keep him healthy, but playing time could be the only thing holding him back in September. |
Sep 5 2021 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with a run scored and two steals in Sunday's 6-0 win over the White Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi did all his damage in the sixth inning where he singled, stole two bases and came around to score. He's swiped four bags in three games since returning from his lengthy stint on the injured list. Through 51 plate appearances, the speedy infielder is slashing .347/.360/.755 with five steals and 10 runs scored. |
Sep 4 2021 | Mondesi will sit Saturday against the White Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Royals were expected to be cautious with Mondesi down the stretch after he missed most of the year with hamstring and oblique injuries. That's been the case in the four days since his return from the injured list, as he's alternated between the lineup and the bench. He's already homered and stolen a pair of bases in his two appearances, showing that his talent is very much still present, but expect him to continue being handled carefully given that the Royals are out of the playoff picture. |
Sep 2 2021 | Mondesi isn't starting Thursday's game against Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi returned to the lineup as the designated hitter Wednesday and went 2-for-5 with a homer, two runs and a stolen base. However, Carlos Santana will serve as the designated hitter while Edward Olivares enters the lineup in right field Thursday. |
Sep 1 2021 | Mondesi went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a stolen base and an additional run scored in Wednesday's loss to Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi missed over two months with an oblique injury, and he showed some rust by striking out three times in his return to action. However, the 26-year-old was dynamic when he didn't whiff. He singled in his first at-bat, was advanced to second, stole third and scored on a corresponding throwing error. Mondesi later blasted a 422-foot solo shot to left field for what ended up being the Royals' final run of the game. The oft-injured infielder could be a major factor down the stretch for fantasy managers who have patiently held onto him, particularly given his ability to rack up stolen bases in bunches. |
Aug 19 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) will resume a rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha on Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi's rehab assignment was paused Sunday after he experienced oblique tightness, and further tests revealed that he's still dealing with scar tissue in his right oblique from an injury earlier in the year. The 26-year-old is expected to take most of his swings from the right side to limit the exertion on his right oblique, but it's encouraging to see him return to game action following the brief shutdown. |
Aug 16 2021 | Mondesi is dealing with scar tissue in his right oblique, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi's rehab assignment was shut down due to oblique tightness, and he's apparently dealing with effects from the right oblique issue that he dealt with earlier in the season. The 26-year-old will be able to continue throwing and fielding, and he'll also continue to swing from the right side while backing off his left-handed swings. It's not yet clear when Mondesi will be ready to return to game action. |
Aug 15 2021 | Mondesi experienced oblique tightness during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha and returned to Kansas City on Sunday to be evaluated, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old joined Omaha in early August for the rehab stint and went 0-for-13 through five games, but he hasn't seen the field since Tuesday due to the oblique tightness. Mondesi landed on the shelf with a strained left oblique June 21, and he was sidelined for the first two months of the season by a strained right oblique. It's unclear which injury he aggravated, but it will push back his recovery timeline regardless. A new timetable for his return should be established once he's reevaluated by the team doctors. |
Aug 3 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Sidelined since June 20 with a strained left oblique, Mondesi is finally ready to move on to the final phase of his recovery program by taking part in minor-league games. Since Mondesi has already spent time on the shelf with two other lower-half injuries this season (a strained right oblique and a strained left hamstring), the Royals could elect to take it slowly with his rehab assignment. According to Josh Vernier of 610 Sports Kansas City, general manager Dayton Moore hinted Monday that once he returns from the 10-day injured list, Mondesi could be subject to more frequent maintenance days as the Royals aim to preserve him from the long haul. Even if he plays only five or six times per week, Mondesi should remain one of the league's top stolen-base threats, assuming his injuries haven't compromised his speed or aggressiveness on the basepaths. |
Aug 2 2021 | General manager Dayton Moore acknowledged Monday that the Royals can't realistically count on Mondesi (oblique) to handle an everyday role in 2022 in light of his injury history, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports Kansas City reports. "No. You can't [count on Mondesi playing every day]...We're learning that we're going to have to manage his workloads in ways that he may not be a guy that plays more than 100 games...We can't count on him as an everyday player." | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given the overwhelming positivity GMs tend to express about players like Mondesi who are viewed as cornerstone pieces for their franchises, Moore's admission is surprising, and probably a fair assessment at this stage. Residing on the injured list for the third time this season, Mondesi hasn't played since June 20 due to a left oblique strain, after he previously missed action with a right oblique strain and a left hamstring strain. Mondesi also required surgery on his left shoulder in the 2019-20 offseason, but the slew of lower-half injuries he's dealt with in 2021 are probably the greater concern for his long-term outlook, given how reliant his game is on speed. The 26-year-old is said to be progressing from his latest health-related setback, but the Royals haven't established a timeline for him to begin a rehab assignment, much less return from the 10-day IL. |
Jul 16 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) is progressing well and has begun swinging, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has dealt with two oblique strains and one to his hamstring this season, limiting him to just 10 games. He's trending in the right direction again, and the Royals appear pleased with his progress, but it's not clear when exactly the team expects him back on the field. |
Jul 7 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) participated in light fielding drills ahead of Wednesday's game against the Reds, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been on the injured list with a left oblique strain since June 21, but he's now resumed some baseball activities. The shortstop was able to field grounders during pregame warmups, although it's worth noting he didn't throw during the drills. The 25-year-old still doesn't have a clear timetable to return, and a better idea of his status could come into focus once he's able to ramp up his intensity. |
Jun 21 2021 | The Royals placed Mondesi on the 10-day injured list Monday with a strained left oblique. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Mondesi isn't dealing with an aggravation of the strained right oblique that sidelined him for nearly two months to begin the season, he'll still be forced to the IL for the third time in 2021 while tending to an injury to his other side. General manager Dayton Moore was unwilling to provide a timeline on Mondesi's return when he met with the media earlier Monday, so the 25-year-old looks like he could be at major risk of spending longer than the minimum amount of time on the shelf. While Mondesi is sidelined again, the Royals are expected to turn to Nicky Lopez to pick up most of the work at shortstop. |
Jun 20 2021 | Mondesi exited Sunday's game against the Red Sox in the seventh inning due to a side injury, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi was reinstated from the injured list Tuesday after missing time with a hamstring injury, but he's now dealing with a side issue. The shortstop will be able to rest during Monday's scheduled day off, but he'll be further evaluated by the team's medical staff to determine the extent of his injury. |
Jun 19 2021 | Mondesi isn't starting Saturday's game against the Red Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has homered in each of his last two games, including a mammoth blast in the bottom of the third inning Friday that traveled 464 feet. Nicky Lopez will take over at shortstop and bat ninth. |
Jun 18 2021 | Mondesi went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Friday's 5-3 win over Boston. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi's second blast in as many games gave Kansas City a 3-1 lead in the third inning. The shortstop has four homers, nine RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base in just nine games this season. While the power shouldn't be expected to last, Mondesi should be able to provide a speed boost as long as he doesn't re-aggravate a hamstring strain that cost him two weeks earlier this month. |
Jun 16 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to Detroit. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The shortstop missed two weeks with a hamstring strain. In limited time this year, Mondesi has three homers, six RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. The speedster will likely take on an everyday role going forward if he can stay healthy, which will leave Nicky Lopez and Hanser Alberto as bench options. |
Jun 15 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday's game against the Tigers. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Matheny said earlier Tuesday that Mondesi was "very close" to being activated, and he'll officially rejoin the roster ahead of Tuesday's game. He's not in the starting lineup for the middle game of the set against Detroit, but he figures to return to the top or middle of the Royals' order in coming days. Ronald Bolanos was moved to the 10-day IL with a right flexor strain in a corresponding roster move. |

Jun 9 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) took batting practice and did some other work Tuesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Matheny said Mondesi appeared to be moving well. As critical as the young shortstop's absence is, the Royals will surely exercise caution in timing his return from his second IL stint of the season. |
Jun 6 2021 | The Royals placed Mondesi on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi initially tweaked the hamstring in Monday's game against the Pirates, but the Royals waited six days before officially deactivating him when he didn't recover from the injury as quickly as hoped. Now on the shelf for a second time this season after missing the first seven weeks while recovering from an oblique injury, Mondesi's health is becoming a growing concern. The Royals haven't indicated when Mondesi might be ready to return from his latest setback, but whenever he's back in action, the lower-body concerns could prompt him to take a more conservative approach on the basepaths to avoid an aggravation. Nicky Lopez will likely be Mondesi's primary replacement in the middle infield until he's reinstated from the IL. |
Jun 5 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) remains out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Twins, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite his removal Monday being dubbed precautionary by manager Mike Matheny, Mondesi hasn't played since then. Having not placed the 25-year-old on the injured list, the Royals must expect him to return within a few days, but his exact status may remain unclear until he appears in a lineup once again. Nicky Lopez will fill in at shortstop Saturday. |
Jun 4 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi hasn't played since leaving Monday's game against the Pirates with a hamstring issue. Per Alec Lewis of The Athletic, whether Mondesi is available off the bench Friday will depend on how he fares in pregame activities. Nicky Lopez will get the start at shortstop and bat ninth against Minnesota. |
Jun 3 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) isn't starting Thursday's game against the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi was removed from Monday's game as a precautionary measure and was reportedly feeling better Tuesday, but he'll miss a second straight contest due to his hamstring issue. Hanser Alberto will start at shortstop and bat eighth. |
Jun 1 2021 | Mondesi (hamstring) is not starting Tuesday against the Pirates, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to manager Mike Matheny, Mondesi was feeling better Tuesday morning after being removed, reportedly as a precaution, from Monday's contest with a hamstring issue. It remains unclear how soon the shortstop will be able to return to action, but Matheny's update suggests the injury is nothing too significant. |
May 31 2021 | Mondesi exited Monday's game against the Pirates after feeling a "little tweak" in his hamstring, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The speedster went 2-for-3 with a two-run blast before leaving the contest. Mondesi's removal appears to have been precautionary, but it'll be unclear how serious the hamstring issue is until the Royals provide further updates. He has hit .360 with two homers and three doubles in 25 at-bats since making his 2021 debut May 25. |
May 29 2021 | Mondesi went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a stolen base during Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old took Taylor Rogers deep with a two-run shot during the ninth inning for his first homer of the season, which brought the Royals within a run. Mondesi is 7-for-18 with a home run, three doubles, three RBI and a stolen bases through five games since being activated from the injured list Tuesday. |
May 26 2021 | Mondesi went 2-for-4 with two doubles in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rays. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his belated season debut due to an oblique injury, Mondesi appeared to be 100 percent as he ripped two-baggers from both sides of the plate, one off Rich Hill and the other against Pete Fairbanks. The 25-year-old shortstop can be very streaky, and a big surge from Mondesi to try and make up for lost time would not be a surprise. |
May 25 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) was activated from the injured list Tuesday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been out all year after straining his right oblique in late March. He'll head straight into the starting lineup, batting seventh and playing shortstop. |
May 18 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) has been transferred to Triple-A Omaha to continue his rehab assignment Tuesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move marks one step closer toward Mondesi's looming return to big-league action. The switch hitter likely would have been activated by now if not for his lefty swing being a bit behind in the rehab, but the move to Triple-A suggests Mondesi is swinging comfortably from both sides of the plate. |
May 13 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) said he wants more at-bats from the left side of the plate before making his season debut, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi spoke to reporters after the first game of a rehab assignment Thursday. He elaborated that he felt good in the field and swinging from the right side of the plate, but he needs additional at-bats as a lefty to ensure that he is completely healthy. He remains without a formal timetable to return. |
May 12 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Thursday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old has been sidelined since the start of the season with a strained right oblique, but the rehab assignment indicates he's close to joining the Royals. It's unclear how many games Mondesi will require in the minors before being activated, but he could rejoin the team within the next week or two if all goes well. |
May 8 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) still doesn't have a timetable to begin a rehab assignment, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi will travel to the Royals' team facility in Arizona on Saturday, and he should be able to ramp up his activity level while he's there. However, it's not yet clear when the shortstop could appear in live games as he continues to recover from a right oblique strain. |
May 7 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) is progressing in his recovery but the Royals will not rush him back, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The switch-hitting shortstop's swing, particularly from the left side, needs a bit more work before he begins his rehab assignment. Mondesi is itching to return, so it sounds like he could move on to the final step in his rehab next week. |
May 3 2021 | Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Monday that Mondesi (oblique) could begin a rehab assignment next week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been progressing well in his recovery, and he recently began taking batting practice at the Royals' alternate training site. The 25-year-old will now join the team to participate in pregame activities such as work in the infield and batting practice, and he could see game action in the minors on a rehab assignment in the near future. |
Apr 30 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) has progressed to participating in batting practice at the alternate training site, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old began taking part in some baseball activities a couple weeks ago, but advancing to taking batting practice is a significant step as he returns from an oblique strain. Mondesi figures to be a couple weeks away from rejoining the Royals, and he'll likely take part in minor-league rehab games before returning to the majors. |
Apr 19 2021 | Manager Mike Matheny said Monday that Mondesi (elbow) hasn't yet resumed swinging, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi recently started doing some activities, but Matheny said that the 25-year-old has only been doing limited controlled movement. Mondesi has been sidelined since the start of the regular season due to a right oblique strain, and the team hasn't yet established a timetable for his return. Nicky Lopez should continue to fill in as the primary shortstop while Mondesi is unavailable. |
Apr 15 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) has been doing more movement recently, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi had been resting for several weeks after he was placed on the 10-day injured list to begin the regular season due to a right oblique strain. Manager Mike Matheny said Thursday that Mondesi has been making some progress, but the speedy shortstop still doesn't have a timetable to make his season debut. |
Apr 12 2021 | Mondesi (oblique) is still resting to let his injury fully heal as of Monday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi has been on the injured list since the start of the regular season after he tweaked his oblique late in spring training. The 25-year-old has been resting as the team doesn't want to rush him back and risk a setback that would force him to miss additional time. Manager Mike Matheny declined to give a timetable for Mondesi's return Monday, but Nicky Lopez should continue to fill in at shortstop while Mondesi is sidelined. |
Mar 31 2021 | Royals manager Mike Matheny said he expects Mondesi to miss "a couple weeks" with the strained right oblique that resulted in the shortstop's placement on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Matheny, Mondesi initially tweaked his oblique in his first at-bat during Monday's Cactus League game, and though he was able to remain in the game, he felt renewed pain Tuesday. The Royals thus decided to put Mondesi on the shelf to begin the season, but given the rough timeline Matheny provided, the 25-year-old appears to be dealing with a low-to-moderate grade strain. Regardless, Mondesi's absence for any length of time is a tough break for fantasy managers, who are likely counting on him to nearly single-handedly propel them to the top of the standings in the stolen-base category. Nicky Lopez is expected to serve as the Royals' primary shortstop for the duration of Mondesi's absence, with Hanser Alberto perhaps serving as a short-side platoon partner at the position. |
Mar 29 2021 | Mondesi went 0-for-2 in Monday's 5-4 win over Cleveland to conclude Cactus League play with a .303/.343/.606 slash line across 33 at-bats. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi was slightly delayed to begin spring training due to a sore foot, but the 25-year-old didn't need much time to settle in at the dish. As has been the knock on Mondesi for much of his career, his plate discipline left something to be desired this spring (2:10 BB:K), but his blend of power (five extra-base hits) and speed (two stolen bases in two attempts) continues to make him an intriguing building block for fantasy managers willing to chase upside in the early rounds of drafts. Mondesi's willingness to run in an era when steals are becoming increasingly hard to come by is especially valuable; in 308 career regular-season games, Mondesi has collected 113 stolen bases on an efficient 138 attempts (81.8 percent success rate). |
Mar 5 2021 | Mondesi (foot) will bat second and play shortstop Friday against the Dodgers, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi had been dealing with a sore foot since the start of camp and missed the Royals' first few spring games. The injury never seemed particularly serious, however, and returning to game action Friday gives him plenty of time to get up to speed by the regular season. |
Mar 4 2021 | Royals manager Mike Matheny said Thursday that Mondesi (foot) is "moving in the right direction," Josh Vernier of 610 Sports reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi still hasn't made his Cactus League debut due to a sore foot that he sustained when fouling a ball off his foot prior to spring training. He'll work on running the bases and sliding Thursday as he continues his journey back to full strength. Matheny hasn't expressed much concern regarding the injury, but it's still not clear when Mondesi will be healthy enough to appear in spring games. |
Mar 2 2021 | Royals manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that Mondesi has yet to make his Cactus League debut due to a sore foot, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi sustained the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot prior to reporting to camp. Matheny noted that the Royals are merely taking a cautious approach with Mondesi, who is feeling fine aside from the soreness. Mondesi will likely continue to take part in live batting practice and drills for the next few days before the Royals integrate him into games. |
Jan 15 2021 | Mondesi agreed to a one-year, $2.52 million contract with the Royals on Friday, avoiding arbitration. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Perhaps the most divisive player in fantasy baseball heading into 2021 drafts, Mondesi could lead the majors in steals by a wide margin. However, it's easy to point out that his plate skills are quite poor relative to the players who typically get drafted in the first couple rounds of drafts. He should be able to stay in the lineup even amid long slumps, as his defense at shortstop is extremely valuable and he is still just 25 years old. |
Sep 27 2020 | Mondesi went 3-for-4 with a home run, one double and two RBI in Sunday's win against the Tigers. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi was on a tear to close out the season as he recorded multi-hit performances in each of the last five games. He came within a triple of hitting for the cycle in the regular-season finale as he helped power the Royals to a 3-1 win. The 25-year-old finished the 2020 campaign with a .256 batting average, six home runs, 22 RBI and 24 stolen bases. |
Sep 25 2020 | Mondesi went 3-for-3 with an RBI triple, two stolen bases and a run scored in Friday's 3-2 win over the Tigers. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi was just a homer shy of the cycle Friday. In the first inning, Mondesi and Whit Merrifield executed a double-steal after the former got aboard with a single. In the second, Mondesi had an RBI triple. He added a double in the fifth and stole third, which gave the speedy shortstop 24 stolen bases on the year. He's surged to end the season, going 11-for-19 with five steals, seven runs scored and four RBI in his last five games. Overall, he's produced four homers, three triples, 18 RBI and 30 runs scored in 57 contests. |
Sep 24 2020 | Mondesi went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, three runs and an RBI during Wednesday's 12-3 win over the Cardinals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi's fantasy value this season has almost exclusively derived from his MLB-high 20 stolen bases, but he delivered a rare big performance without contributing on the basepaths. The three runs tied a season high for Mondesi, whose 14 runs over his last 12 games exceed his total from his first 43 games of the season combined (13). The increased scoring is a byproduct of moving up higher in the lineup in September, though Mondesi has created some of his own good fortune by demonstrating some progress at the plate. He's notched at least one hit in all but four of his last 18 contests. |
Sep 18 2020 | Mondesi went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, two runs scored and a walk in Friday's 9-5 loss to the Brewers. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi drew a walk and scored on Salvador Perez's first-inning double. In the third, Mondesi reached on a single and advanced to second on Ryan Braun's error before coming around to score on a Perez single. Mondesi added his 18th stolen base of the year by swiping third in the seventh inning after hitting a leadoff double. The speedy shortstop is slashing .216/.253/.330 with four homers, 14 RBI and 23 runs scored in 50 games this year, but he's been more productive since the start of September. |
Sep 13 2020 | Mondesi went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, one steal and one additional run scored Saturday against the Pirates. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is up to four home runs to go along with his MLB-leading 16 steals. Mondesi is hitting .288/.329/.530 with four home runs and nine steals in 66 at-bats over his last 17 games, rewarding those who were patient with him after a really rough start to the season. |
Sep 12 2020 | Mondesi went 1-for-3 with three runs scored, two walks, two stolen bases and an RBI in a 4-3 win over the Pirates on Friday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi played a role in every run scored by the Royals on Friday, and he now has 15 stolen bases on the season. He's also riding an eight-game hitting streak, which has buoyed his September average to .286. |
Sep 10 2020 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored Thursday against Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi made a lot happen in the contest, highlighted by his three-run homer in the eighth inning. However, he also continued to produce on the basepaths, recording his 13th stolen base of the campaign in the third inning after reaching base on a walk. Mondesi is quietly riding a seven-game hitting streak. That's bolstered his season-long line to .204/.232/.290 with two home runs, 15 runs scored and 11 RBI across 170 plate appearances. |
Sep 8 2020 | Mondesi is starting at shortstop and batting second Tuesday against Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is hitting .375 with one home run, three steals, five strikeouts and zero walks in 16 at-bats over his last four games, which is apparently a large enough sample of quality production for the Royals to bump him from the bottom third to the top third of the lineup. Mondesi had not hit higher than seventh in the order since he hit sixth Aug. 11. |
Sep 7 2020 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base in Monday's 5-2 loss to Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His seventh inning shot was his first homer of the year, and the only run the Royals managed off Zach Plesac. Mondesi has nudged his average back up to .200 with six hits in his last four games, and his AL-leading 11 steals have been the only thing keeping his fantasy value afloat this year. |
Sep 4 2020 | Mondesi went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a pair of RBI singles in Friday's 7-4 loss to the White Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi had RBI singles in the second and fourth innings. After the latter one, he also recorded his first stolen base of the game. His second steal came in the eighth. The shortstop snapped a 0-for-22 skid Friday, but he's still slashing only .196/.224/.246 with a major-league-leading 10 stolen bases as well as 11 runs scored and five RBI in 38 games this year. |
Sep 1 2020 | Mondesi is not in Tuesday's lineup against Cleveland. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been a rough season for Mondesi, but things have been particularly bad lately. He is 2-for-33 (.061 average) with a 32.4 percent strikeout rate, one walk and zero extra-base hits over his last eight games. It's a testament to his immense upside on the basepaths that he somehow still has two steals over that stretch, but it's hard to blame the Royals for letting him clear his head for this one. Nicky Lopez will start at shortstop while Whit Merrifield starts at the keystone. |
Aug 29 2020 | Mondesi went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts and eight men left on base in Friday's 6-5 loss to the White Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His whiff with runners on second and third and nobody out in the second inning set the tone for his evening, and Mondesi's inability to make any kind of solid contact cost the Royals dearly in the end. The shortstop's speed still gives him fantasy value as long as he's in the starting lineup, but Mondesi's .205/.225/.265 slash line and 2:37 BB:K through 32 games have that starting job on very thin ice. |
Aug 25 2020 | Mondesi went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Cardinals. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been a colossal struggle at the plate for Mondesi so far this season -- he has a walk rate under two percent and entered this game with a 35 wRC+, the lowest mark among all qualified hitters. He's making up for those struggles to an extent in rotisserie leagues with seven bags in 11 attempts, but if Mondesi can't provide anything more with the bat, his playing time will eventually take a hit. |
Aug 16 2020 | Mondesi will start at shortstop and bat ninth Sunday against the Twins, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nicky Lopez had batted out of the ninth spot in the order in three of the previous four games, but after a recent surge at the plate, he'll move up to the two hole in the series finale. As a result, the rest of the Royals regulars will drop back a spot in the lineup, leaving the struggling Mondesi as the No. 9 hitter for the first time this season. While Mondesi hasn't hesitated to run this season, he's gotten on base at a measly .263 clip and hasn't been efficient on the bases (five steals in nine attempts). Additionally, he has yet to hit a home run in 21 games, leaving those that selected Mondesi in fantasy drafts wanting more a quarter of the way through the season. |
Aug 8 2020 | Mondesi went 1-for-5 with two stolen bases in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After singling against Sean Poppen in the seventh inning, Mondesi stole second and third to triple his stolen stolen-base total for the season. Mondesi has drawn only one walk in 62 plate appearances and is still without a homer. However, after batting as low as eighth last week, Mondesi has hit fifth in each of the Royals' last three games, which suggests manager Mike Matheny is confident that Mondesi is close to getting it together. |
Aug 4 2020 | Mondesi went 3-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI in Tuesday's win over the Cubs. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi plated the Royals' first run of the game with a single in the second inning and scored their final run in the ninth. The 25-year-old has overcome a slow start by reaching base in six of his last seven games, going 11-for-24 (.458) over that span. Mondesi is batting .289 (13-for-45) on the season, though he has stolen only one base in three attempts. |
Aug 3 2020 | Mondesi (quadriceps) will bat eighth and play shortstop Monday against the Cubs, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi left Sunday's game against the White Sox after fouling a pitch off his leg, but his removal was considered precautionary, so it's no big surprise to see him remain in the lineup Monday. Mondesi has started all 11 games this season despite going just .231/.231/.333 at the plate, though the rebuilding Royals have little reason not to let him work through his struggles on the field. |
Aug 2 2020 | Mondesi was removed from Sunday's game against the White Sox after the fourth inning with a quadriceps contusion, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Lewis, the Royals are labeling Mondesi's removal as precautionary after he fouled a pitch off his lower leg during his lone at-bat in the second inning. Mondesi ended up grounding out in the at-bat and went on to play the next two innings in the field, but the Royals decided to err on the side of caution by pulling him out of the contest early. Nicky Lopez (shin) came off the bench to replace Mondesi, who can be considered day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener with the Cubs. |
Jul 8 2020 | Royals manager Mike Matheny said Sunday that Mondesi (shoulder) "looks fantastic" since joining Kansas City for summer camp, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. "He's strong, moving well," Matheny said. "He took a live [batting practice Saturday] and took a couple pitches inside, and they were good pitches, and turned them around. Timing looks good." | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After undergoing surgery in October on his left shoulder, Mondesi was eased into spring training and wasn't scheduled to make his Cactus League debut until March 12, but he ultimately didn't get the chance to play after MLB suspended its season that same day. Now nearly four months later, Mondesi has been able to take advantage of the shutdown to get back to full health, and Matheny's comments suggest the talented shortstop is back to 100 percent as the Royals prepare for a 60-game season. Given the scarcity of steals league-wide even in a full 162-game slate, Mondesi's ability to impact that category could be amplified in an abbreviated campaign. In 177 games over the past two seasons, Mondesi has gone 75-for-89 in stolen-base attempts. |
Mar 12 2020 | Mondesi (shoulder) will start at shortstop and bat second in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Mariners, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Royals have been pleased with the progress Mondesi has made this spring following his prolonged recovery from October surgery on his left shoulder, so he'll get the green light to enter the spring lineup for the first time. It's worth noting that rain is in the forecast in Arizona in advance of the game's 4:05 p.m. ET start time, so it's possible the contest gets postponed and Mondesi's spring debut is pushed back to Friday. In any case, Mondesi will likely only need to play a handful of games during the Cactus League slate to guarantee his availability for the March 26 regular-season opener. |
Mar 11 2020 | Mondesi (shoulder) is taking part in more baseball activities alongside the rest of his teammates, though he's yet to get into game action, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mike Matheny described Mondesi as "tracking well," though the fact that he's yet to appear in a game with Opening Day just 15 days away doesn't seem to bode well for his ability to avoid a trip to the injured list. The Royals have yet to officially announce when Mondesi is expected back from labral repair surgery. |
Mar 5 2020 | Mondesi (shoulder) won't get into games until next week at the earliest, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Last weekend the hope was that he might be ready for Cactus League games this week, but he is still not ready. Mondesi is coming back from the same shoulder procedure (labral repair) that resulted in ineffective seasons from Gregory Polanco and Michael Brantley in their first years back from surgery, and it is still not a lock that he will be ready for Opening Day. |
Mar 1 2020 | Mondesi (shoulder) doesn't have a set date for his spring debut, but it could occur this week, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi took a big step Saturday by seeing limited action in an intrasquad game as he continues his recovery from the left shoulder surgery he underwent in September. Manager Mike Matheny reiterated the young shortstop remains on track to be ready for Opening Day. |
Feb 19 2020 | Mondesi (shoulder) will play in games this spring, but not in Friday's spring opener against the Rangers, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi underwent shoulder surgery at the end of last season, but he remains on track for Opening Day, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. If he suffers a setback, Nicky Lopez would likely start at shortstop to open the season. |
Dec 11 2019 | New Royals manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that Mondesi is progressing in his rehab from left shoulder surgery and is on schedule to be ready for Opening Day, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: When Mondesi underwent surgery at the end of last season, he was given a five-to-six month estimated recovery timetable, leaving Opening Day in doubt. It's great to hear that he's progressing well, though we still expect some limitations in spring training. While Mondesi's rate stats took a big step backward last season, he is only 24 with the rare combination of power and game-breaking speed. The dream is still very much alive for fantasy. |
Sep 25 2019 | Mondesi will undergo shoulder surgery for a tear in his joint next week, a procedure which will keep him out for five or six months, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi had already been ruled out for the season, but he's now at risk of missing time at the start of next year. Opening Day is just over six months away, so the stated timeline should still see him back on the field in time for the first game of the season, but even a small setback will likely result in him opening the season on the injured list. Regardless of his exact return date, he'll come with some injury risk during draft season, as it can never be fully guaranteed that a player will perform at his pre-surgery level immediately after returning to action. |
Sep 22 2019 | Mondesi (shoulder) will not play again this season and is seeing a team physician Monday to determine the severity of his shoulder injury and to figure out a corresponding move to treat the issue, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi exited the Royals' game Sunday against the Twins in the first inning after his shoulder popped out of its socket while making a diving play. He dislocated the same shoulder back in July and will need to take some time to let it heal up. Mondesi finished the season with nine home runs, 62 RBI and 43 stolen bases to go with a .263/.291/.424 slashline. |
Sep 20 2019 | Mondesi went 0-for-5 with two stolen bases, a run and three strikeouts in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Twins. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi got aboard on a fielder's choice in the third inning, then stole second base. Later in the inning, he and Jorge Soler completed a double steal. Mondesi got aboard again in the eighth on an error, and then scored on a Hunter Dozier single. The speedy shortstop is up to 41 stolen bases, ranking second in the majors. He's added nine homers, 61 RBI and 57 runs scored in 100 games this season despite striking out at a nearly 30 percent clip. |
Sep 17 2019 | Mondesi went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and two RBI in Monday's 6-5 win over the Athletics. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mondesi's slugging percentage is down 59 points from his breakthrough 2018 campaign, but the 24-year-old has more or less lived up to fantasy managers' draft-day expectations when he's been healthy enough to play. The shortstop has overcome a shaky plate approach to maintain a .270 average, with his elite speed and 38.4 percent hard-hit rate offering some legitimacy to his elevated .362 BABIP. And though he was caught stealing Monday, Mondesi has been the majors' most prolific base stealer on a per-game basis, nabbing 39 bags in just 96 contests. |

Sep 12 2019 | Mondesi is not in Thursday's lineup against the White Sox. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since coming off the injured list, Mondesi is hitting .308 with two home runs and eight steals in nine games. Nicky Lopez will get the nod at shortstop while Whit Merrifield starts at the keystone. |
Sep 7 2019 | Mondesi went 0-for-5 but stole a base in a 7-2 victory against the Marlins on Saturday. | ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since returning from a shoulder injury on Sept. 1, Mondesi has swiped six bags in six games. Unless he suffers another injury, Mondesi should easily reach 40 steals, and at 88.1 percent, he has one of the best stolen base percentages in the league as well. Mondesi is batting .265 with seven home runs, 54 RBI, 51 runs and 37 steals in 362 at-bats this year. |

Jul 24 2018 | Mondesi was reinstated from the family medical emergency list prior to Tuesday's game against the Tigers. | This was an anticipated move for Mondesi, who was away from the team for four games to deal with some family issues. He is hitting .297/.316/.514 with two home runs and two steals (on four attempts) in 10 games (37 at-bats) in July. Look for him to be in the lineup most days over the rest of the season, as he is one of the few building blocks on the big-league roster. |
Jul 24 2018 | Mondesi is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Tigers, Maria Torres of The Kansas City Star reports. | He was reinstated from the family medical emergency list earlier in the day after missing four games, but the Royals may be looking to ease him back into action. Alcides Escobar is starting at shortstop and hitting ninth. |
Jul 23 2018 | Manager Ned Yost said Mondesi will likely return from the Family Medical Emergency List prior to Tuesday's game, Rustin Dodd of The Athletic reports. | Mondesi was placed on emergency leave prior to Friday's series opener against Minnesota, but it appears as though he's nearing a return to the active roster as the team begins a three-game set versus Detroit on Monday. Across 21 games with the Royals this year, he's slashed .250/.270/.444 with 11 RBI and five stolen bases. |
Jul 20 2018 | The Royals placed Mondesi on the Family Medical Emergency List on Friday. | Mondesi will be away from the team for the entirety of this weekend's series against Minnesota, as he will miss a minimum of three games. He will be eligible to return Monday versus the Tigers but could be away from the team for up to seven days. In a corresponding move, Ramon Torres was called up from the minors. Expect to see Alcides Escobar man the shortstop position in his absence. |
Jul 16 2018 | Mondesi went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double Sunday in the Royals' 10-1 loss to the White Sox. | Mondesi provided six of the Royals' 13 total bases on the afternoon, highlighted by a 414-foot blast off Jeanmar Gomez in the eighth inning. The 22-year-old has supplied an .829 OPS through 10 contests in July while chipping in two steals, making him someone worth keeping an eye on heading into the second half. His fantasy value would benefit from a move up in the lineup, as the Royals have largely confined him to a lower-third spot in the order since he was promoted from Triple-A Omaha on June 17. |
Jul 14 2018 | Mondesi is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox, Rustin Dodd of The Athletic Kansas City reports. | Mondesi has been a regular in the lineup since his promotion in mid-June -- this is just his fifth absence in the team's last 21 games. He started poorly but has come on strong of late, going 9-for-31 (.290 average) with a couple steals in his last eight games. He should remain a useful source of speed in the second half. |
Jul 11 2018 | Mondesi went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, a home run and four RBI in Tuesday's win over the Twins. | Mondesi slugged a three-run homer -- his second of the year -- off starter Aaron Slegers in the second inning, and later got an RBI-single in the sixth. Since being called up June 17, Mondesi is hitting .230/.254/.393 with 10 RBI, 11 runs and five stolen bases in 61 at-bats. In three of his last six games the 22-year-old has had multi-hit performances. |
Jul 4 2018 | Mondesi is out of the lineup against the Indians on Wednesday, Maria Torres of the Kansas City Star reports. | Mondesi will hit the bench after going 2-for-4 with one run during Tuesday's contest. In his place, Alcides Escobar will man shortstop and bat eighth in the order. |
Jul 3 2018 | Mondesi is not starting Tuesday against Cleveland, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | Mondesi has played regularly since his mid-June call-up but hasn't done much with the bat, hitting just .184/.205/.342 in 12 games. Alcides Escobar will start at shortstop Tuesday. |
Jul 3 2018 | Mondesi will start at shortstop for Tuesday's game against the Indians, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | Mondesi was set to ride the bench Tuesday but Mike Moustakas was a late scratch due to back spasms, pressing the 22-year-old into the lineup. |
Jul 1 2018 | Mondesi is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mariners. | Mondesi heads to the bench following six straight starts in the middle infield, during which he went 4-for-20 with a home run and a stolen base. Though manager Ned Yost initially indicated Mondesi would only play a few times per week behind middle-infield starters Whit Merrifield and Alcides Escobar, the Royals have addressed the logjam by using Escobar in center field more frequently. It thus appears that Mondesi will have a clear path to steady at-bats the rest of the season, making him an appealing target for those in deeper leagues mining for stolen-base production. |
Jun 19 2018 | Manager Ned Yost said Mondesi will start at shortstop a few times per week, Rustin Dodd of The Athletic Kansas City reports. | Mondesi was originally expected to see most of his playing time at second base, but Yost talked to Alcides Escobar -- who has made 405 consecutive starts at shortstop -- and the veteran shortstop assured the manager that he was on board with ceding a few starts to the youngster moving forward. The 22-year-old Mondesi, who is viewed as the Royals' shortstop of the future, is 1-for-7 in two appearances this season. |
Jun 17 2018 | Royals manager Ned Yost said that Mondesi, who was promoted from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday, would play 3-to-4 times per week, Maria Torres of The Kansas City Star reports. | Yost was reluctant to confirm whether Mondesi would play primarily second base or shortstop during his stay with the big club, but the expectation is that the 22-year-old will see most of his action on the right side of the infield. While Alcides Escobar isn't viewed as a long-term piece for the Royals, he's made his last 404 starts at shortstop and seems unlikely to shift from the position so long as he remains a lineup regular. Whit Merrifield, on the other hand, has seen action at first base, center field and right field this season, so he could theoretically move to a different position in order to create room at the keystone for Mondesi. Merrifield ended up exiting Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Astros with a knee contusion, paving the way for Mondesi to make his 2018 debut. The youngster went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts upon entering the game in the bottom of the second inning. |
Jun 17 2018 | The Royals Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com Mondesi from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. | Though Mondesi will join the active roster for the first time all season after being placed on the 10-day disabled list out of spring training and then optioned to Triple-A, it doesn't look like he'll be assured an everyday role in the middle infield immediately. Per Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com, Alcides Escobar and Whit Merrifield will serve as the starters in the middle infield Sunday against the Astros, confining Mondesi to the bench for at least one day. However, with Escobar hitting just .209 on the campaign and set to become a free agent this winter, it's difficult to imagine him retaining a full-time role the rest of the season, especially with the Royals removed from the playoff race. With that in mind, Mondesi, who has slashed a disappointing .250/.295/.492 across 133 plate appearances at Omaha, should get an extended look with the big club at some point within the next few months, even if it doesn't happen during this current stint. |
Apr 14 2018 | Mondesi (shoulder) will start playing extended spring training games Saturday and could be assigned to Triple-A Omaha in a week, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | He will need around 30 at-bats in extended spring training before being sent out, presumably to Omaha, where he would continue to knock off rust before getting a potential call-up. Fortunately for those who have been stashing Mondesi, Alcides Escobar has been as bad as expected, hitting .171 in 46 plate appearances for the big club. If Mondesi can get rolling at Triple-A, he could earn an everyday job in the big leagues sometime before the All-Star break. |
Mar 29 2018 | Mondesi (shoulder) was put on the 10-day disabled list prior to Thursday's game, Joel Goldberg of FOX Sports Kansas City reports. | The Royals elected to give Mondesi a little more time to fully recover from a shoulder impingement that he's been dealing with since the second week of March. Expect the infielder to return to the active roster as soon as he's eligible. |
Mar 24 2018 | Mondesi (shoulder) will play second base and bat seventh against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. | Mondesi has been battling a shoulder impingement since early March, but was able to begin throwing this week and should be nearing full health as Opening Day approaches. Unless the Royals feel as though he needs a little more time to recover, expect the 22-year-old to be active once for Thursday's regular-season opener against the White Sox. |
Mar 21 2018 | Mondesi (shoulder) said he began throwing from 90 feet Tuesday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. | Mondesi has been dealing with a shoulder impingement for the past two weeks, which has limited him to designated hitter duties in Cactus League action. While he's making positive strides in his throwing program, it appears Mondesi may not have enough time to get back up to speed before the start of the season, which could lead to him opening the year at extended spring training. |
Mar 12 2018 | Mondesi is in the lineup for Monday's game against the Padres. | Mondesi has been sidelined with arm soreness and hasn't appeared in a game since March 1. He's still not throwing for a few days but is in the lineup as a designated hitter. |
Mar 9 2018 | Mondesi (shoulder) will not throw for the next five days, Rustin Dodd of The Athletic reports. | Mondesi has been out since Wednesday with arm soreness. The injury isn't considered serious and Mondesi was originally expected to be back in action this weekend. He could still see game time as a designated hitter in the next few days, but it looks like he won't be fully back until at least the middle of next week. |
Mar 7 2018 | Mondesi will be sidelined for a couple days due to arm soreness, Rustin Dodd of The Athletic reports. | Manager Ned Yost said that the injury was nothing serious and that Mondesi should be back in action by the weekend. Thus far, Mondesi has played in five Cactus League games, going 4-for-13 with one home run, four RBI and one triple while competing for a job in the Royals' infield. |
Feb 22 2018 | Mondesi will officially be known as "Adalberto" going forward, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports reports. | It's unclear what prompted the name change for Mondesi. The well-regarded 22-year-old is competing for a job in spring training, but ultimately may open the year at Triple-A Omaha with Alcides Escobar and Whit Merrifield currently holding down the middle of the infield. If the team decides to move Merrifield around, there could be an opportunity for Mondesi. |
May 24 2015 | Mondesi is hitting .226/.250/.452 through seven games since returning from a back injury at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on May 15. | He's chipped in two homers and two steals along with six RBI during that span, but Mondesi continues to show a line that you would expect from a 19-year-old playing in the Texas League against much older competition. It will be interesting to see if he's considered a trade chip by the Royals this season as the big club may be interested in upgrading the top of the rotation. |
Apr 23 2015 | Mondesi (back) is getting at-bats in Arizona and should return to Double-A in the next week or so, according to Northwest Arkansas manager Vance Wilson. | He is the top position player in the Royals' system and is a top-five shortstop prospect in all of baseball, so it will be great to get him back in action at Double-A. He is still incredibly young for the level (19 years old), so look for him to spend all of 2015 with Northwest Arkansas. |
Jun 2 2014 | Mondesi returned to High-A Wilmington this week after missing nearly two weeks due to back spasms, the Kansas City Star reports. | Mondesi had been out since May 16 due to back spasms, but has returned and played in five straight games for the Blue Rocks. The 18-year-old is slashing .239/.297/.333 with eight stolen bases over 39 games this season. He's likely several years away from competing at the highest level, but should at least be on the radar in deeper dynasty formats. |
Jul 19 2013 | Mondesi, 17, is slashing .261/.307/.373 with five home runs, 38 RBI and 16 steals through 83 games for Low-A Lexington. | Mondesi has held his own at this level despite still being a teenager. |
Jun 17 2013 | Mondesi went 4-for-6 for Low-A Lexington on Sunday. | Mondesi now has his average up to .253, which is pretty impressive considering he doesn't turn 18 for another month. |
