Dec 5 2024The Athletics agreed to a three-year, $67 million contract with Severino on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the deal includes an opt out after the second year. It's an unexpected landing spot for Severino, to say the least, as the $67 million guarantee is the largest in Athletics history. Severino held a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings across 31 regular-season starts for the Mets in 2024. The A's will play the 2025-27 seasons in Sacramento before moving to their permanent home in Las Vegas in 2028.
Nov 19 2024Severino has rejected the Mets' one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino might not be able to match the $21.05 average annual value of the qualifying offer on a multi-year contract, but he should still do pretty well in free agency. The Mets are interested in bringing the right-hander back, but if they're unable to they will net a draft pick when Severino signs elsewhere. Severino, who turns 31 in February, held a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings across 31 regular-season starts for the Mets in 2024.
Nov 16 2024Will Sammon of The Athletic relays that Severino is unlikely to accept the Mets' $21.05 million qualifying offer. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deadline for players to make a decision on a qualifying offer is Tuesday, but it appears Severino is set to decline the Mets' offer in favor of attempting to land a multi-year offer. The 30-year-old right-hander signed a one-year, $13 million with the Mets in November of 2023 and had a quality 2024 campaign, going 11-7 across 31 starts with a 3.91 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings. It's certainly a risk for Severino, given the fact that he pitched just 209.1 innings from 2019 to 2023 due to various injuries.
Nov 4 2024The Mets extended a one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer to Severino on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino held a 3.91 ERA and 161:60 K:BB over 182 innings across 31 regular-season starts for the Mets in 2024. If he rejects the qualifying offer and signs a multi-year deal elsewhere, the Mets will receive a draft pick as compensation.
Oct 14 2024Severino will start Wednesday in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Dodgers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino will not be with the Mets in Los Angeles for Game 2, as he's already headed back to New York in advance of his Game 3 start so that he can get plenty of rest. The right-hander has posted quality starts in each of his two postseason outings so far, allowing a combined seven runs (six earned) with a 10:2 K:BB over 12 innings. He'll be opposed by Walker Buehler in Game 3.
Oct 4 2024Severino will start Sunday in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Phillies, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets are going with Kodai Senga (calf/triceps) in a likely bullpen game in Game 1 before turning to Severino on normal rest in Game 2. Severino tossed six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) in his wild-card series outing versus the Brewers. He'll be opposed by Cristopher Sanchez.
Sep 30 2024Severino will start Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Brewers on Tuesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was held out of Monday's twin bill against Atlanta, so he'll be fresh for the beginning of the wild-card round. He accrued a 3.64 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in his last five appearances of the regular season, and the Mets would surely appreciate some length out of Severino on Tuesday after some of the club's high-leverage relief arms were forced into action Monday to secure a place in the postseason.
Sep 29 2024Severino will start Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader versus Atlanta, if necessary, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino will be set to pitch in Game 2 on Monday if New York drops the opener. The Mets need to win one of the two contests in order to secure a spot in the Wild Card round Tuesday. Tylor Megill will start Game 1 on the mound and if New York wins, Severino will shift his focus to being ready for the start of the postseason.
Sep 25 2024Severino (11-7) took the loss Tuesday, giving up four runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings as the Mets fell 5-1 to Atlanta. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander picked a bad time to have his worst start of September, and his shortest outing since July 31. Severino needed 89 pitches (61 strikes) to record 12 outs, and he saw his quality start streak end at four. He's been one the Mets' most reliable arms during their playoff push, posting a 3.17 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB over his last eight trips to the mound, and Severino could be pitching with a wild-card spot on the line in his final start of the regular season, which lines up to come Sunday in Milwaukee.
Sep 19 2024Severino (11-6) picked up the win over the Phillies on Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino got off to a hot start, striking out five of the first eight batters he faced in the contest before allowing two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth. The right-hander generated 13 whiffs in the contest en route to posting at least seven strikeouts for the fifth time in his last eight outings. It marked Severino's fourth-consecutive quality start, while he's also secured wins in each of his last four decisions (spanning seven starts).
Sep 14 2024Severino did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Phillies, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was mostly in control but surrendered two home runs to Bryce Harper before departing with a 4-3 lead. The 30-year-old generated 11 whiffs on 86 pitches and has tossed three consecutive quality starts to open September. On the season, he owns a 3.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 149:57 K:BB across 172 innings and lines up for a rematch with the Phillies next week.
Sep 8 2024Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the Reds. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino held the Reds off the board through six and nearly made it out of the seventh unscathed but a two-out RBI single by Noelvi Marte knocked Severino out with the game tied at one. It was the fourth time in his last six starts that Severino has struck out at least eight and the fourth time in five starts he's allowed no more than one earned run, holding a 1.95 ERA over that stretch. He remains a key cog in the Mets' playoff push and will look to continue the momentum in his next start, tentatively slated to take place when the Mets travel to Philadelphia for a showdown against the Phillies.
Sep 2 2024Severino (10-6) earned the win over Boston on Monday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino yielded just one extra-base hit (a triple) and threw 66 of 100 pitches for strikes. The veteran right-hander picked up just his second quality start over his past eight outings, with the other being a complete-game shutout of Miami on Aug. 17. Monday's victory was Severino's 10th of the campaign, marking the first time he has reached double-digit wins since he went 19-8 for the Yankees in 2018. Not coincidentally, 2024 is the first time he's logged 20 starts since that standout 2018 campaign.
Aug 29 2024Severino did not factor into the decision in a loss to Arizona on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino struck out four of the first seven batters he faced before allowing Arizona's first run of the contest on an RBI single from Luis Guillorme. The right-hander was then victimized by the long ball in both the third and fourth innings and would later be relieved by Huascar Brazoban with two outs in the fifth, marking Severino's shortest outing this month. The 30-year-old veteran has now surrendered at least four runs in four of his last six starts, coughing up multiple homers in three of those outings. He'll finish the month of August with a 4.08 ERA and a 35:8 K:BB in five starts, going 2-2 over that stretch.
Aug 23 2024Severino (9-6) picked up the win over the Padres on Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and four walks over five innings while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino did a good job of pitching his way out of trouble through the first four innings despite surrendering five singles and a walk over that stretch. The Padres would finally get to him in the fifth, however, when the right-hander allowed the first three batters to reach, eventually leading to San Diego's first run coming home on a double play. Severino has allowed one run or fewer in back-to-back starts after previously giving up at least four runs in three straight. However, he also matched his second-highest walk total of the campaign in Thursday's win, and he's issued multiple free passes in seven of his last nine outings.
Aug 18 2024Severino (8-6) picked up the win Saturday, scattering four hits and a walk over nine scoreless innings in a 4-0 victory over the Marlins. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Three of the four hits off Severino were doubles, but he bore down and stranded the runner each time. The right-hander needed a season-high 113 pitches (78 strikes) to record his second career shutout, with the other coming back in 2018. It was an impressive turnaround for Severino, who had gone 0-3 with an 8.00 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over his prior four starts. The 30-year-old is scheduled to make his next trip to the mound on the road next week in San Diego.
Aug 12 2024Severino (7-6) took the loss Sunday against the Mariners, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino had allowed just one run through four innings, which came on a solo home run by Jorge Polanco. He was one out away from getting through the fifth unscathed, but Randy Arozarena extended the inning with an RBI infield single before Cal Raleigh opened things up with a two-run homer. On a positive note, Severino racked up eight strikeouts, his most since he had 10 back on June 23 but he's now given up five homers and 14 runs over his last three starts (15 innings). The 30-year-old now owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 109:46 K:BB in 133.2 innings. He'll look for some better results when he takes the mound in a weekend series against the Marlins his next time out.
Aug 6 2024Severino (7-5) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits and struck out five without walking a batter over five innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a marginally better outing than his last start, in which he allowed six runs over three innings to the Twins. Severino also avoided walking a batter for the first time since June 23, but that wasn't enough to spare him from taking consecutive losses for the first time this season. He's now at a 4.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 101:44 K:BB through 128.2 innings over 22 starts this year. He's seen his highest workload since 2018, so there is some risk that he'll wear down over the remainder of the campaign. Severino's next start is projected to be at Seattle.
Jul 31 2024Severino (7-4) took the loss Wednesday, surrendering six runs on six hits and two walks over three innings as the Mets fell 8-3 to the Twins. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Three of the hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including a solo homer by Byron Buxton in the second inning and a two-run blast by Matt Wallner in the third. Severino has given up only four runs and zero homers in his last three starts combined, but he remains prone to poor outings -- he's been tagged for at least six runs in three of his last eight trips to the mound, stumbling to a 5.32 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 36:14 K:BB through 45.2 innings over that stretch. He could have a hard time righting the ship in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Coors Field.
Jul 26 2024Severino did not factor into the decision in an extra-inning win over Atlanta on Thursday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino allowed multiple baserunners in four of the six innings in which he appeared, and while he managed to limit the damage, the right-hander was unable to make it through six innings for the first time in nine starts. Severino has held opponents to two or fewer runs in each of his last three outings, though he's also walked multiple batters in four straight.
Jul 21 2024Severino (7-3) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Marlins. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 53 of 91 pitches for strikes to kick off the combined shutout, giving Severino his ninth quality start of the season. The 30-year-old has been the Mets' most reliable starter this season, lasting at least six innings in eight straight trips to the mound since the beginning of June while posting a 3.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB in 51.2 innings over that stretch. Severino's next outing lines up to come at home next week against Atlanta.
Jul 10 2024Severino (6-3) earned the win over Washington on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino surrendered a season-high seven runs over six frames in his previous start, but he rebounded Wednesday with a much more effective outing. The veteran hurler didn't give up any extra-base hits and held the Nationals scoreless outside of the fourth inning. Severino notched his eighth quality start of the campaign but just his second over his past five appearances. While he's been up and down this season and is on pace for a career-low strikeout rate, Severino has given the Mets plenty of length, going at least six innings in 12 of his 18 starts, including in each of his past seven.
Jul 5 2024Severino (5-3) took the loss against the Pirates on Friday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino surrendered four runs on three homers between the fourth and fifth innings. He was pulled after loading the bases to open the seventh, and all three of those runners scored on a grand slam after his departure. Severino yielded nine hard-hit balls Friday and has allowed six long balls and 17 earned runs over his past four outings. On the season, the 30-year-old owns a 3.83 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 77:34 K:BB over 103.1 innings. He lines up for a home matchup with the Nationals next week.
Jun 30 2024Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings against the Astros. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was highly efficient if not incredibly effective, needing just 79 pitches to complete seven innings despite allowing four runs and nine baserunners while throwing a first-pitch strike to just 13 of 28 batters. He also struck out only three after fanning a season-high 10 batters in his previous outing. It's the fifth consecutive start in which he's gone at least six innings, though it's the second time within those starts that he allowed at least four earned runs. Severino's next opportunity to toe the rubber is slated to take place next weekend when the Mets travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Pirates.
Jun 23 2024Severino (5-2) allowed three hits and struck out 10 without walking a batter over six scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was dealing, making a great rebound after getting touched up for six runs versus the Rangers in his last start. He's posted a quality start in four of his last six outings, allowing 14 runs (13 earned) with a 27:8 K:BB across 38.2 innings in that span. The right-hander is at a 3.29 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 71:31 K:BB through 90.1 innings across 15 starts, with Sunday's start being the fourth time he's avoided issuing a walk this season. Severino is projected to make his next start at home versus the Astros.
Jun 21 2024Severino will move up in the Mets' rotation to start Sunday against the Cubs, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino had been slated to start Tuesday versus his former club, the Yankees, but will be bumped up a couple days to take the ball on regular rest. David Peterson had been on turn for Sunday but now figures to take the ball next week against the Yankees.
Jun 18 2024Severino did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's 7-6 win over Texas, allowing six runs on eight hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After yielding just one run through four innings, the New York right-hander unraveled in the fifth, allowing five runs on five hits, including two homers. Severino also produced only five whiffs on his way to collecting a season-worst one strikeout. The 30-year-old's velocity on his entire arsenal was down in this outing, anchored by his sinker averaging 94.5 mph, down 1.2 mph. Severino is currently scheduled to make his next start against his former team -- the Yankees -- at home next week.
Jun 14 2024Severino allowed one run on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters over six innings in a no-decision versus Miami on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino recorded only one 1-2-3 inning and punched out a season-low two batters, but he held the Marlins scoreless until Jake Burger belted a solo homer in the sixth frame. It was the third time in his past four outings that the veteran hurler has yielded exactly one run, and he has a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP despite a mediocre 16:7 K:BB over 26.1 innings during that span. Severino is on pace for a career-worst 6.9 K/9, but he's been solid otherwise in his first season as a Met, posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 78 frames.
Jun 6 2024Severino (4-2) picked up the win in Wednesday's 9-1 rout of the Nationals, allowing one run on seven hits over eight innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander took a shutout into the eighth inning before three straight singles to lead off the frame finally got Washington on the board. Severino hadn't even allowed a runner to reach second base prior to that, and he left the mound having thrown an efficient 92 pitches (62 strikes). The quality start was his fifth of the year, and he'll take a 3.25 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 58:27 K:BB through 72 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Marlins.
Jun 1 2024Severino (3-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino got off to a rough start, coughing up three runs in the first inning. He gave up one more over the next four frames before Eugenio Suarez knocked him out of the game with a solo shot in the sixth inning. Severino still earned his first win since April 17 in the chaotic 10-9 contest. He ends May with a subpar 4.91 ERA and 23:16 K:BB through 29 frames. Severino will carry a 3.52 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be in Washington.
May 26 2024Severino came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 7-2 extra-inning loss to the Giants, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander pitched well enough to secure his third win of the season and left the mound with the Mets nursing a 2-1 lead, but Edwin Diaz blew another save in the ninth inning before the Mets' bullpen fell apart completely in the 10th. Severino settled for his fourth quality start instead, but he's been producing solid numbers in 2024 despite a 10.6 percent walk rate that would be the highest of his career if he can't rein it in. He'll take a 3.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 50:26 K:BB through 58.2 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Diamondbacks.
May 18 2024Severino didn't factor into the decision Saturday in Miami, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over 6.2 frames. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino had limited the Marlins to just two runs through six innings of work. He was sent back out for the seventh, though, in a decision Mets manager Carlos Mendoza probably wishes he could have back. Severino gave up a walk, two hits and two runs in the frame before being pulled and another run was added to his line when an inherited runner scored. In three May starts, Severino has an ugly 13:12 K:BB across 16.2 innings.
May 13 2024Severino did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 4-3 win over Atlanta. He allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino served up a solo home run to Jarred Kelenic in the second inning but otherwise limited the damage. His night ended after allowing the first two hitters to reach in the sixth and he was ultimately charged with another run. Severino has now failed to reach six innings in consecutive starts and has issued nine walks over his last 10 innings pitched. He now owns a 3.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 41:20 K:BB in 45 innings and will look to get back in the win column over the weekend against the Marlins having not picked up a win since April 17.
May 5 2024Severino didn't factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits with six walks across five innings against the Rays. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite yielding just four hits, Severino gave up a season-high four earned runs Sunday. His struggles stemmed from a lack of command, as he doled out out a career-high six walks, with two of those batters coming around to score. Still, Severino's ERA sits at 2.93 through 40 innings. He's lined up for a start Saturday against Atlanta, which is a tough matchup for a bounce-back.
Apr 29 2024Severino didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks over eight innings against the Cubs. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was locked into a pitchers duel with Jameson Taillon, as the pair of starters each went deeper than seven innings while allowing just one run. Individually, Severino took a no-hitter into the eighth. However, Severino's efforts were for naught as Edwin Diaz surrendered a pair of runs in the ninth inning, leading to the Cubs' win. After posting a career-worst 6.65 ERA across 89.1 innings in 2023, Severino boasts a 2.31 ERA through 35.0 innings in his first season with the Metropolitans. He's lined up to face the Rays on Saturday.
Apr 24 2024Severino (2-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino held the Giants scoreless through four frames before four singles in the fifth plated three runs, with only one of those knocks being a hard-hit ball. It was his second start of the year allowing no walks and his second straight quality outing after failing to reach six frames in each of his first three starts. The 30-year-old owns a 2.67 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB in 27 innings. He lines up to take the rubber again versus the Cubs next week.
Apr 17 2024Severino (2-1) picked up the win Wednesday in a 9-1 victory over the Pirates, allowing one unearned run on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Henry Davis reached base to lead off the third inning on a catcher's interference call against Francisco Alvarez and came around to score, but that was the only damage on Severino's line. The right-hander produced his first quality start of the season on 96 pitches (61 strikes), and his 2.14 ERA comes with a 21:9 K:BB through four outings and 21 innings. Severino will take the mound next on the road early next week in San Francisco.
Apr 13 2024Severino (1-1) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on one hit and four walks over five innings in a 6-1 victory over the Royals. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 55 of 90 pitches for strikes, and aside from a solo shot by Salvador Perez in the second inning, Severino kept Kansas City hitters off balance and took advantage of his defense. Severino has yet to last more than five innings in any of his first three starts, but he's delivered a 3.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB through 15 innings. He'll try to give the Mets a bit more length in his next outing, which lines up as a home start next week against the Pirates.
Apr 6 2024Severino was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over five innings in a no-decision against the Reds on Saturday. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A fielding error by second baseman Jeff McNeil led to the first run of the game, and Severino gave the Reds another run on a bases-loaded walk later in the same inning. However, he buckled down from there and left with a three-run lead, only for the bullpen to give it up. Severino has a 3.60 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB through two starts spanning 10 innings. A projected matchup in Atlanta next week dings his short-term outlook, but the veteran righty will be in the streaming conversation most weeks and should remain rostered in most fantasy leagues, especially in light of the rash of pitching injuries around the league.
Mar 30 2024Severino (0-1) took the loss Saturday against the Brewers, coughing up six runs on 12 hits over five innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fired 67 of 88 pitches for strikes, but he wasn't exactly fooling anyone and generated only seven swinging strikes, leading to plenty of contact that found holes in the defense. Severino has similar issues in 2023, giving up 113 hits in 89.1 innings for the Yankees en route to a 6.65 ERA, so this was far from an encouraging first outing with the Mets. The team won't pull the plug on Severino yet, but he'll need to deliver better results to earn the trust of fantasy GMs. He's in line to take the mound next weekend in Cincinnati.
Mar 20 2024Severino threw five innings and about 85 pitches in a minor-league game Tuesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has avoided arm trouble this spring, and he says it's the first time he's felt fully healthy in camp since 2018. Severino allowed just one run on a solo shot over nine Grapefruit League innings with an 8:0 K:BB. Severino is on track to start the Mets' second game of the season, following Jose Quintana in the rotation, and while his ugly numbers for the Yankees last year give fantasy GMs plenty of reason to be nervous about rostering him, he has significant bounce-back potential -- the 30-year-old delivered a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 27.7 percent strikeout rate against a 7.4 percent walk rate over 102 innings in 2022.
Mar 14 2024Severino allowed one run on two hits over four innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old right-hander is trying to get his career back on track with the Mets after eight seasons with the Yankees, and so far in camp the results have been excellent. The run Severino gave up Wednesday was his first of the spring, and through nine Grapefruit League innings he's posted an 8:0 K:BB while showing good velocity. The Mets are counting on him to plug a hole in their rotation, but since throwing 191.1 innings in 2018, the biggest workload Severino has managed in the majors is 102 innings during 2022 due to a variety of injuries.
Mar 2 2024Severino struck out one over two scoreless innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first game action of the spring, Severino showed good velocity, topping out at 97.8 mph with his fastball, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Injuries have derailed the 30-year-old righty's career and helped lead to a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 89.1 innings for the Yankees last season, but the Mets are hoping Severino can stay on the mound in 2024 and provide them with some reliable innings.
Feb 12 2024Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns implied Monday that Severino (oblique) is fully healthy ahead of spring training, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stearns noted that lefty David Peterson (hip), infielder Ronny Mauricio (knee) and right-hander Kyle Crick (calf) are the only players who will be held out of drills to begin camp, which suggests that Severino has a clean bill of health after a high-grade left oblique strain sidelined him for the final month of the 2023 season. Before hitting the shelf, Severino was roughed up to the tune of a 6.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 79:34 K:BB across 89.1 innings in what proved to be his final season with the Yankees, but the Mets are hoping that better health and a change of scenery can help the 29-year-old recapture some semblance of the form that made him one of baseball's top young pitchers just a few seasons prior. After inking a one-year, $13 million deal in November, Severino is likely being penciled in for a back-end spot in the Mets rotation.
Nov 29 2023Severino (oblique) agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old right-hander will make the short move to Queens after a rollercoaster eight-year run with the crosstown Yankees. He arrived in the Bronx with loads of promise back in 2015 but has battled a range of injuries over the last handful of seasons. It was a high-grade oblique strain that cut short his 2023 campaign, and he stumbled to a 6.65 ERA in 89.1 innings when healthy. That said, Severino should be 100 percent by the beginning of spring training in 2024 and figures to have a spot in the Mets' Opening Day rotation if he gets through camp without any physical complications. His career ERA in the majors is 3.79.
Nov 7 2023Severino (oblique) has progressed to throwing in his rehab process and is feeling good, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A high-grade oblique strain forced Severino to miss the final month of the season. The 29-year-old free agent posted a 6.65 ERA and 1.65 WHIP through 89.1 frames in 2023, but his progress in rehab has apparently been encouraging enough to draw interest from a handful of teams.
Sep 9 2023Severino will miss the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with a high-grade left oblique strain, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's season, and quite possibly his Yankees career, is over, as the 29-year-old is an impending free agent. He did not have the walk year he envisioned, posting a 6.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 79:34 K:BB. Severino served up a career-high 23 home runs over just 89.1 innings of work.
Sep 8 2023Severino will undergo diagnostic testing on his left side Saturday after his early departure from Friday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino appeared to tweak something in his left side/oblique area while pitching in the top of the fifth inning and made an early exit from the start following a brief mound visit. He was charged with two earned runs on four hits and one walk over four innings, striking out five. An oblique strain could spell the end of his Yankees career, as the 29-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent this winter.
Sep 3 2023Severino came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Yankees' 5-4 win over the Astros, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander lived in the zone all evening, tossing 75 of his 104 pitches for strikes, but he managed only nine swinging strikes and got taken deep by Michael Brantley in the second inning and Yainer Diaz in the fourth. Severino had put together a 14.2-inning scoreless streak prior to that Brantley homer, but he hasn't been able to sustain success for more than a couple starts at a time this season -- since the beginning of August, the 29-year-old has a 5.20 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB through 27.2 innings. If he stays on turn, Severino's next outing would come at home next weekend against the Brewers.
Aug 28 2023Severino (4-8) earned the win Monday, allowing five hits over seven scoreless innings against the Tigers. He struck out eight without issuing a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino scattered five hits en route to his second consecutive scoreless outing. The enigmatic 29-year-old struck out a season-high eight while not issuing any free passes for just the second time this year. Severino's back-to-back gems have lowered his season-long ERA to 6.64 after it ballooned to an unsightly 8.06 earlier in the month. He tentatively lines up to face a much tougher Astros offense at Minute Maid Park over the weekend.
Aug 23 2023Severino (3-8) earned the win over Washington on Wednesday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two batters over 6.2 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino came into the contest struggling so mightily that his role in the rotation was in some question -- he had posted a 14.17 ERA and 2.48 WHIP over 13.1 innings while losing each of his previous four starts. For one game at least, the right-hander turned things around, tying his longest outing of the campaign with 6.2 frames and posting his second scoreless outing. Severino struck out just two batters, but the Yankees (and his fantasy managers) probably won't dwell over that given the positive start overall. It's going to take more than just this outing to declare Severino back to form, but it was certainly a step in the right direction and leaves little doubt that he'll remain in the rotation for now. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come in Detroit early next week.
Aug 16 2023Severino (2-8) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over four innings as the Yankees fell 5-0 to Atlanta. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There were signs of progress for the right-hander, who generated 27 called or swinging strikes among his 83 pitches, but Severino still lost his fourth straight start while getting tagged for at least five runs in his third straight outing. He's managed only one quality start in eight trips to the mound since the beginning of July with a ghastly 11.08 ERA, 2.31 WHIP and 29:15 K:BB through 31.2 innings, making the 29-year-old all but unrosterable in fantasy, but the Yankees' lack of healthy alternatives will likely keep him in the rotation. Severino's next start is likely to come at home early next week against the Nationals.
Aug 11 2023Severino will start Tuesday against Atlanta, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been in danger of losing his rotation spot for multiple weeks now, but the Yankees continue to need him after recently losing Carlos Rodon (hamstring) and Nestor Cortes (shoulder) to injuries and Domingo German to alcohol abuse treatment. Severino, 29, carries a brutal 8.06 ERA through 63.2 innings this season.
Aug 10 2023Severino (2-7) took the loss against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two batters over two-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees moved Severino behind an opener (Ian Hamilton) in an attempt to fix his first-inning struggles, but the adjustment didn't make much of a difference. Severino came on in the second frame and fell behind 3-0 after the fourth batter he faced, Oscar Colas, tagged him for a two-run homer. Severino allowed another run in the third and was pulled after issuing a leadoff walk in the fourth. The right-hander has struggled massively since the start of July, posting an 11.71 ERA and 2.39 WHIP while serving up 10 home runs over 27.2 innings. New York may need to do more than just place Severino behind an opener to help solve the problems that have led to him posting an ugly 8.06 ERA though 14 starts this season.
Aug 9 2023Severino won't start Wednesday's game against the White Sox, but he could be deployed as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen behind Ian Hamilton, who will serve as the Yankees' opener, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hamilton hasn't covered more than three innings in any of his 31 appearances between the majors and minors in 2023, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the White Sox batting order before exiting the contest. Wednesday had been Severino's turn through the rotation, but because he's been lit up to the tune of an 11.22 ERA and 2.34 WHIP over his last six starts, the Yankees may be eager to try him out in a different role. Assuming Severino ends up serving as the Yankees' main option out of the bullpen Wednesday, he'll be the pitcher most likely to factor into any decision, though his innings count may be more suppressed than usual.
Aug 6 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that he hasn't decided whether Severino will make his next turn through the rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt will pick up starts in the Yankees' first two games of the week versus the White Sox, but no confirmation has been made on a starter for the series finale Wednesday, when Severino's turn in the rotation comes up. Boone said he would wait and see how things played out with the Yankees' pitching staff over the next few days before making a decision on the starter for Wednesday, but Severino could end up sticking in the rotation by default after Carlos Rodon exited Sunday's 9-7 loss to the Astros with hamstring tightness. Rodon will undergo an MRI on Monday, and if he's forced to go on the injured list, the Yankees wouldn't have many starting options on the 40-man roster at their disposal if Severino is moved to the bullpen. Even if Severino maintains his rotation spot this week, fantasy managers won't be able to use him with any degree of confidence. He's gone 1-4 with a 11.22 ERA, 2.34 ERA and 22:12 K:BB in 25.2 innings over his last six starts.
Aug 4 2023Severino (2-6) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over 4 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Astros. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino allowed a three-run home run to the Astros' Yainer Diaz and the Yankees were never able to recover. He came into the game with a 7.49 ERA on the season and has now allowed 32 earned runs in 25.2 innings since the start of July. With the Yankees' playoff hopes dwindling by the day, it would be surprising if Severino continues in his role as a starter for much longer.
Aug 2 2023Severino is listed as the Yankees' starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Astros, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yankees manager Aaron Boone suggested earlier this week that Severino might be at risk of losing his rotation spot, but the club mostly sat idle at Tuesday's trade deadline and will apparently stick with the 29-year-old right-hander at least a little while longer. He has struggled to a 7.49 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB through 57.2 innings (12 starts) this season.
Jul 31 2023Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that "all options are on the table" when asked if the Yankees are committed to giving Severino his next start in the rotation, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If Severino was going to get the ball this weekend against the Astros, it would have been easy for Boone to confirm that when asked directly, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Severino shift to a relief role, especially if the Yankees can trade for a replacement. Either way, given that Severino has allowed 27 earned runs in 21.2 innings over his last five starts, it would be pretty risky to deploy him this week in fantasy.
Jul 30 2023Severino (2-5) allowed nine runs on 10 hits and two walks over 3.1 innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Baltimore jumped all over Severino on Sunday Night Baseball, plating seven runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth. It's the fourth time in just 12 starts this season that he's given up at least seven runs. Three of those ugly outings came during July, resulting in an outrageous 10.38 ERA for the month. Severino's season mark has jumped to 7.49 through 57.2 frames. His next start is currently projected to be at home against the Astros.
Jul 23 2023Severino (2-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings against the Royals. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's looked better since the All-Star break, allowing four runs over 11.2 innings in his last two starts after surrendering 14 earned runs in his previous two outings. Overall, it's been a shaky campaign for Severino since returning to the Yankees rotation in late May. His ERA now sits at 6.46 with a 1.73 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB through 11 starts (54.1 innings). The 29-year-old right-hander is currently lined up to face the Orioles on the road in his next outing.
Jul 17 2023Severino allowed a run on six hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was solid despite putting too many runners on base early on, and the only run he gave up with a Matt Thaiss solo shot in the sixth inning. Prior to the All-Star break, Severino was torched for 16 runs (14 earned) over 6.2 innings across his first two starts in July. The right-hander has struggled to a 6.66 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 40:22 K:BB through 48.2 innings over 10 starts this season after beginning the year on the injured list with a lat strain. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Royals this weekend, though Severino's place in the rotation could be tenuous if the Yankees opt to upgrade their pitching before the trade deadline.
Jul 6 2023Severino (1-4) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on 10 hits and one walk over 2.2 innings against the Orioles. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday's outing was one to forget for Severino, who failed to get out of the third inning for the first time all year and tied his season high in earned runs. After surrendering a leadoff homer to Gunnar Henderson in the first, Severino held the Orioles scoreless until a disastrous third inning where he allowed three doubles before being pulled. Severino has now posted back-to-back nightmare starts in which he's allowed 16 runs over 6.2 innings. Through nine starts (42.2 innings) this season, Severino owns career worsts in ERA (7.38), HR/9 (2.3) and K/9 (7.8).
Jul 2 2023Severino (1-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits and three walks over four innings against St. Louis. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino ran into trouble in the bottom of the third, allowing back-to-back singles to open the frame before surrendering a three-run homer to Paul Goldschmidt. But the right-hander's troubles didn't end there as the Cardinals went on to add another two runs in the inning and two more in the fourth. The seven earned runs allowed tied his season high and Severino has now lost three of his last four decisions. He's also walked at least three batters while giving up at least seven hits in three of his last four starts.
Jun 30 2023Severino's scheduled start against the Cardinals on Friday has been postponed due to inclement weather, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Because of the rain in St. Louis, the Yankees and Cardinals will play a doubleheader Saturday with the first game starting at 11:15 CST. Severino and Matthew Liberatore -- the two scheduled starters for Friday's contest -- will likely pitch in one of the two games of the twin bill instead.
Jun 25 2023Severino (1-2) picked up the win Saturday, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things looked like they might unravel quickly for the right-hander, as he walked two batters with two outs in the first inning, but Jake Bauers threw out Nathaniel Lowe at the plate to end the frame after a Josh Jung single, and Severino didn't let another runner get past second base. It was an encouraging outing for the 29-year-old after he'd coughed up 19 earned runs in 18.2 innings over his prior four starts, but he still has a big hole to climb out of where his ratios are concerned. Severino will look to build a winning streak in his next start, likely to come next weekend in St. Louis.
Jun 18 2023Severino (0-2) yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks over five innings Sunday, striking out six and taking a loss against Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino allowed one run through three innings before the Red Sox brought home three runs in the next two frames. After a solid start to his 2023 campaign, the 29-year-old has coughed up 19 earned runs over his last 18.2 innings, driving his season ERA up to 6.30 through six starts. On the bright side, Sunday's outing was the first time he didn't allow a home run since his season debut May 21. Severino's next outing is projected to be at home against the Rangers.
Jun 13 2023Severino did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in a 7-6 victory over the Mets. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino needed 104 pitches to get through 4.2 innings after allowing four runs over his first two frames. The 29-year-old right-hander has struggled mightily of late, allowing 17 runs through 13.2 innings in his last three starts. Severino is 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB through his first five starts (25 innings) this season. He'll look to get on track in his next start, tentatively scheduled for Sunday against the Red Sox.
Jun 8 2023Severino took a no-decision in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, there was some talk that Severino may have been tipping his pitches in his previous outing against the Dodgers, but if that was the case there didn't seem to be much of an adjustment Thursday against Chicago. The right-hander again had trouble keeping the ball in the park, as the White Sox teed off for three homers against him to account for all four of their runs. Severino has now given up six long balls across nine innings over his past two starts after allowing just one home run in 11.1 frames during his first two appearances of the campaign. On a positive note, Severino's six punchouts Thursday were a season high, but he's going to find success difficult to come by if teams continue to consistently take him deep.
Jun 2 2023Severino (0-1) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings against the Dodgers. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's third start was his worst start of the season, as he allowed more home runs Friday than he had allowed runs in his previous two starts combined. He threw a season-high 83 pitches, as he should be stretched out to go deeper in games when he is more effective. His ERA sits at 5.28, but six of the nine runs he has allowed came in a single inning. His next scheduled start is against the White Sox, where he will look to get back on track.
May 27 2023Severino did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit and three walks over 6.2 innings against the Padres. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino turned in another strong performance Saturday, allowing just one hit over 6.2 innings. However, the one hit was a solo homer off the bat of Fernando Tatis in the fourth. Though it was definitely encouraging to see Severino reach into the seventh inning, he was still pulled after only 82 pitches after going 75 in his first start of 2023. Considering Severino has only managed to pitch 120.0 innings combined over the last three years, expect the Yankees to continue to hold him on a pitch count for his next couple of starts. Regardless, fantasy managers who stashed Severino have already had the investment pay off, with Severino allowing 2 earned runs with 10 strikeouts over 11.1 innings pitched so far.
May 21 2023Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in a 4-1 victory over the Reds. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino surrendered a run in the first inning Sunday before holding the Reds to three hits over his final 3.2 frames. Overall, it was an encouraging debut for Severino, who was pulled after throwing 75 pitches. The Yankees will likely be careful with Severino's pitch counts after he missed the start of the season with a lat injury. He's currently lined up to face the Padres at home in his next outing.
May 17 2023Severino (lat) will make his season debut for the Yankees on Sunday in Cincinnati, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino went only 3.1 innings in each of his two rehab starts, maxing out at 58 pitches in his last outing Tuesday with Double-A Somerset. That means he'll surely be on a relatively limited pitch count in his season debut, making him a fairly iffy fantasy option at Great American Ball Park. Still, the Yankees and fantasy managers will be happy to get Severino back -- perhaps for the long haul -- if he can manage to avoid more injuries.
May 16 2023Severino (lat) will throw up to 60 pitches for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday in a rehab start, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino threw 49 pitches in his rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, and he'll get a chance to go a little deeper in this outing. If things go well for Severino on Tuesday, his next start could be made over the weekend against the Reds, but the team will evaluate how things go before making that decision. Assuming there are no setbacks, Severino should be a part of the Yankees' rotation by the end of May.
May 15 2023Severino (lat) may be activated from the IL in time to start Sunday in Cincinnati, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino threw 49 pitches in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last Wednesday, and he's slated to make his next start with the minor-league club Tuesday. The right-hander will likely increase his pitch count to some extent in that outing, and if the appearance goes well, he could be given the go-ahead to make his 2023 MLB debut Sunday against the Reds. Severino would almost certainly have his workload monitored under that scenario, as he didn't see any sort of game action during the entire month of April as he worked his way back from a low-grade lat strain that he suffered near the end of spring training.
May 11 2023Severino (lat) completed 3.1 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In Severino's first game action this season, he threw 29 of 49 pitches for a strike and gave up just one run on a third-inning solo homer. The right-hander is making his way back from a lat strain that occurred near the end of spring training. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Severino will make another rehab start Tuesday. It's possible that he could join the Yankees rotation after that, though manager Aaron Boone hasn't yet committed to that scenario.
May 9 2023Severino (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino had been hoping to push it to Thursday so he wouldn't have to drive to Scranton on Tuesday for an early morning start Wednesday, but the Yankees appear to have overruled him. The right-hander is aiming to make two rehab starts before rejoining the rotation, although it's possible the club will need him to put in more minor-league work than that before deeming him ready for activation.
May 7 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Severino (lat) is expected to make a rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For his part, Severino said he prefers to make his first rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, since Wednesday's contest has an early start time that would require him to stay overnight in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. The Yankees could push Severino back a day to accommodate his wishes, but whether he takes the hill Wednesday or Thursday, it shouldn't ultimately have a dramatic effect on his timeline for making his 2023 MLB debut. Severino threw a three-inning, 40-pitch simulated game this past Friday in Tampa and experienced no ill effects, and he's expected to make at least two rehab starts before being activated from the 15-day injured list.
May 6 2023Severino (lat) felt good after throwing a simulated game Friday and will soon make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Aaron Boone said at the start of May that Severino was two or three weeks from returning from the lat strain which has kept him out all season. While a planned rehab start became a simulated game instead, it doesn't appear as though he's significantly behind that schedule. Exactly how many rehab outings he needs will determine whether or not he's able to hit Boone's stated timeline.
May 3 2023Severino (lat) will throw a live batting practice session Friday instead of beginning a rehab assignment, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The plan had been for Severino to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Tampa on Thursday, but the Yankees have decided they'd rather the pitcher work in a more controlled environment. If everything goes well Friday, he'll then begin a rehab assignment next week. Severino is expected back in mid- to late-May and this news shouldn't change that timetable.
May 1 2023Manager Aaron Boone said Monday in an interview with the Talkin' Yanks podcast that Severino (lat) will rejoin the Yankees' rotation within the next 2-to-3 weeks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino will begin a rehab assignment either Wednesday or Thursday with High-A Tampa. Based on Boone's timetable, the right-hander is expected to make at least two rehab starts before rejoining the big club, assuming Severino experiences no setbacks. Severino has been on the 15-day injured list all season with a strained right lat.
Apr 30 2023Severino (lat) will begin a rehab assignment either Wednesday or Thursday for High-A Tampa, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino will likely need to make multiple rehab starts before returning to the Yankees' rotation, as he's missed all of the 2023 campaign while recovering from a lat strain. If everything goes well in his minor-league outings, the right-hander could be a member of the Yankees' rotation around the middle of May.
Apr 28 2023Severino (lat) threw 40 pitches over three up-and-down sessions Friday in a live session before the Yankees' game against the Rangers, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino continues to make strong progress from his lat strain, and he increased his workload slightly after participating in two sessions Monday. The right-hander is trending towards a rehab assignment, but nothing has been scheduled yet. It's likely Severino rejoins the Yankees in the middle of May if he has no setbacks.
Apr 5 2023Severino (lat) has built up his throwing progression to 90 feet and could throw a bullpen in Baltimore this weekend, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the fourth day of throwing for Severino as he continues to make progress from the low-grade lat strain that has sidelined him since the end of March. He'll likely need to throw a few bullpen sessions first, but the next step could be a rehab assignment in the minors if those go well. Severino is expected to miss a total of 3-to-4 starts and without setback could be back with the Yankees as a member of the rotation before April comes to a conclusion.
Apr 1 2023Severino (lat) threw Friday and Saturday without issues, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino is still limited to light throwing, but it's a positive that he's already begun throwing in some capacity less than a week after suffering a low-grade lat strain. He hopes to only miss three or four starts, and while the Yankees have yet to confirm that timeline, the fact that he's already throwing seemingly suggests he has a chance.
Mar 30 2023The Yankees placed Severino (lat) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was diagnosed with a low-grade right lat strain last weekend and later said he expects to miss only three to four starts to begin the season, but the Yankees haven't confirmed any official timeline for the 29-year-old. He's one of three rotation members opening the season on the IL, as the Yankees also deactivated Frankie Montas (shoulder) and Carlos Rodon (forearm) on Thursday.
Mar 26 2023Severino (lat) said Sunday that he'll resume throwing when pain-free and could miss as few as three or four starts to open the season, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old's initial shutdown period is expected to be about a week, after which it should become clearer whether or not he'll require a lengthier absence. Severino dealt with a similar injury last year that sidelined him for two months, but the right-hander noted that the current injury isn't in the same location as the previous one.
Mar 25 2023Severino is dealing with a law-grade lat strain, likely sending him to the injured list to open the season, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees are hopeful that the injury won't become a long-term problem, but its timing means that Severino is very likely to miss at least a couple starts. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Severino isn't expected to throw for at least five-to-seven days, so it may take some time to know just how long he's likely to be out. The righty also dealt with a lat strain last season, which kept him out from mid-July through late September despite originally carrying the same "low-grade" descriptor. Jhony Brito could step into the rotation in his place, with Clarke Schmidt and Domingo German already earning jobs due to injuries to Carlos Rodon (forearm) and Frankie Montas (shoulder).
Mar 10 2023Severino tossed four innings against Detroit in a Grapefruit League game Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both runs against Severino came via the long ball, as Eric Haase tagged him for a solo shot in the second inning and Kerry Carpenter hit another solo blast in the third. Severino has now given up five home runs and nine runs over 8.2 innings this spring, though he's also posted a solid 10:2 K:BB. The right-hander was able to stretch out to 54 pitches Friday and provided a positive perspective on the outing, saying, "I feel healthy out there," per Dick Scanlon of MLB.com. After being limited to just seven appearances between 2019 and 2021, Severino started 19 games for New York last season, and he heads into the 2023 campaign expected to carry few, if any, restrictions.
Feb 27 2023Severino pitched two-plus innings in a Grapefruit League game against Detroit on Monday, allowing four runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino got tagged for three runs in the first inning, two of which came on an Eric Haase home run. He then pitched a 1-2-3 second frame before walking Akil Baddoo to start the third, and Severino was charged with another run when Baddoo came around to score following the hurler's exit. It was far from an inspiring outing for Severino, though it would be unwise to read too much into a poor outing at the start of spring training. On a positive note, the fact that the right-hander was able to throw 45 pitches (30 of which were strikes) this early in the exhibition slate suggests that he is fully healthy entering 2023 after being limited by injuries in each of his previous four campaigns.
Feb 18 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Severino is already in "elite shape" at the start of camp, James O'Connell of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's health remains a big question mark for the Yankees, as the right-hander has pitched in only 26 games since 2018. He was excellent in the 19 regular-season starts he made last season, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112:30 K:BB over 102 innings, but a lat injury cost him two months of the campaign. However, he's now further removed from his 2020 Tommy John surgery and should be able to pitch with few (if any) restrictions this season, assuming he stays healthy. Fantasy managers can't ignore Severino's lengthy injury history when deciding where to draft him, but given his electric arsenal and past successes, it's certainly feasible for him to rank as a top-15 starting pitcher by season's end.
Nov 4 2022GM Brian Cashman said Friday the Yankees will exercise Severino's $15 million club option for 2023, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino had covered only 18 innings from 2019 to 2021 due to Tommy John surgery, but he returned to New York's rotation last season and posted a 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112:30 K:BB across 102 innings (19 starts). The right-hander missed two months with a lat injury but was reliable when healthy, so it's not a major surprise to see the Yankees picking up the option.
Oct 20 2022Severino tossed 5.1 innings and took the loss Thursday during Game 2 of the ALCS, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A devastating three-run homer by Alex Bregman with two outs in the third was enough for the Astros to win Game 2 in Houston. Severino was able to battle the tough Houston lineup all night, but the one mistake to Bregman put a damper on his performance. He managed to work into the sixth but was pulled for Jonathan Loaisiga after a one-out single by Kyle Tucker. The 28-year-old has now surrendered six runs in 11 innings during the postseason while striking out 12.
Oct 3 2022Severino (7-3) got the win after he tossed seven no-hit innings, allowing one walk while striking out seven batters in Monday's win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was in full command Monday, keeping the Rangers out of the hit column for seven frames. The only baserunner he allowed in the contest was a third-inning walk to Josh Smith. Severino has now produced a 1.69 ERA and 0.63 WHIP with 17 strikeouts over 17 innings in three starts since returning from the 60-day injured list Sept. 21. If he makes another start this season, it will come in the playoffs.
Sep 27 2022Severino didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander ran up his pitch count and left the game after 76 pitches (49 strikes) in his second start since coming off the IL. Severino's workload was encouraging, even if his efficiency wasn't, and he figures to be fully stretched out for his final start of the regular season this weekend against the Orioles. Since returning to action, Severino has a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB through nine innings.
Sep 21 2022Severino (6-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over five innings with six strikeouts against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino looked good in his return from the injured list as had little trouble with the Pittsburgh lineup. He needed just 64 pitches to hold the opposition to three baserunners through five innings. The Yankees were up 6-1 when manager Aaron Boone took Severino out of the game, so it is possible they would have let him go longer if the game were more competitive. He is tentatively scheduled to face off against Toronto next week.
Sep 19 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed over the weekend that Severino (lat) will return from the 60-day injured list to start Wednesday's home game against the Pirates, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino, who has been on the IL since mid-July with a right lat strain, will get the green light to rejoin the rotation following a three-start rehab assignment. In his most recent outing Thursday at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Severino struck out six over 4.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits and one walk. The 28-year-old tossed 57 pitches in that rehab start, so the Yankees could keep him around the 70-to-80-pitch range when he steps back into the big-league rotation this week.
Sep 10 2022Severino (lat) will make another rehab start Thursday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino tossed 45 pitches during a rehab appearance at Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, and he'll have another minor-league outing late next week. Assuming he feels good afterward, the Yankees hope that Severino will be activated Sept. 21, when the team takes on the Pirates at home.
Sep 9 2022Severino (lat) is eligible to return from the injured list Sunday and could be activated for the Yankees' two-game series against Boston that begins Sept. 13, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino made his second rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, pitching four innings and allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over four innings. The right-hander threw 45 pitches (35 for strikes) and touched 99 mph on the radar gun, per Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. General manager Brian Cashman has indicated the goal of having Severino get in five big-league starts before the postseason, and having him activated next week would fit in with that timeframe.
Sep 5 2022Severino (lat) is scheduled to make his next rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Thursday at Single-A Tampa and looked sharp over two scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing one hit and no walks. According to Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record, the Yankees are anticipating that Severino will be ready to rejoin the big-league rotation following Wednesday's rehab start, though he could be capped around 70 pitches in his first outing back from the 60-day injured list. Unless the Yankees elect to expand their rotation to six men, Severino's potential return from the IL next week would likely result in Domingo German moving to the bullpen.
Sep 2 2022Severino (lat) tossed two scoreless innings in a rehab appearance with Single-A Tampa on Friday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Severino's first game action since he completed two innings for the Yankees against Cincinnati on July 13. The right-hander threw 16 of 22 pitches for strikes while dealing with rainy weather that ultimately caused the game to be suspended. Severino will need to build up to higher pitch count before he's able to return to the Yankees, but he's expected to be back with the big club as soon as mid-September.
Aug 29 2022Severino (lat) is expected to make his first minor-league rehab start Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was able to throw a pair of live batting practice sessions last week with no renewed discomfort in his strained right lat, so he should be ready for game action Friday if he makes it through a bullpen session unscathed in the next couple of days. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has said that he plans on having Severino make about five starts before the postseason, so the right-hander looks like he's on track to return from the 60-day injured list around the time he's first eligible for activation in mid-September.
Aug 23 2022Severino (lat) threw 24 pitches Tuesday while facing rehabbing teammate Giancarlo Stanton (Achilles) in a live batting practice session, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Rivera, Severino's fastball sat around 95-to-97 miles per hour during the throwing session, right around his season-long average. The Yankees moved Severino to the 60-day injured list earlier this month after he exited his July 13 start with a low-grade lat strain, but the right-hander already looks like he's well on his way to being ready to go when first eligible in the middle of September. Severino could soon be cleared to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment, where he'll look to build up his pitch count and presumably reclaim his spot in the Yankees' rotation from Domingo German.
Aug 21 2022Severino tossed 25 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The side session was the second in as many days for Severino, who threw 30 pitches in the previous trip to the mound Friday. The right-hander is reportedly recovering well, but he's not eligible to come off the injured list until Sept. 12, which is an off day for the Yankees. Severino's next step is to throw a live batting practice session Tuesday, during which he will reportedly face rehabbing slugger Giancarlo Stanton (Achilles), per Marakovits.
Aug 19 2022Severino (lat) is expected to throw live batting practice Tuesday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Monday, marking the first time he's thrown off a mound since July 14. He'll be cleared to face hitters early next week, and he'll likely be in consideration to begin a rehab assignment shortly after. The right-hander isn't eligible to return from the injured list until mid-September, but he appears to be trending in the right direction.
Aug 17 2022Severino (lat) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session Monday and indicated that it went well, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Severino's first bullpen session since he landed on the injured list July 14, and the hurler said afterward that it was the best he's felt all year. Per MLB.com, the right-hander is expected to throw a few more side sessions before facing live hitters. Severino isn't eligible to come off the 60-day IL until Sept. 13, and the hope is he'll be able to make a handful of starts after his activation in order to ramp up for the postseason.
Aug 12 2022Severino (lat) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been out with a strained right lat since mid-July. He won't return for over a month, as he's been placed on the 60-day injured list, but it's nevertheless a clear positive to see him getting back on a mound.
Aug 1 2022Severino (lat) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino began a throwing program Monday, but with him moving to the longer of the two injured lists, he will not be eligible to return to action until Sept. 13.
Jul 31 2022Severino (lat) will begin a throwing program Monday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Marakovits, Severino said the pain and soreness in his strained right lat began to subside about four or five days after he was placed on the injured list July 14, but the Yankees still kept him shut down from activity for an additional two weeks. The right-hander will be eased into his throwing program by playing catch off flat ground from 60 feet Monday, and he should gradually increase his throwing distance by the end of the week. The Yankees likely won't have a precise timeline for Severino's return from the IL until he faces hitters again, but fantasy managers probably shouldn't bank on him being activated before mid-August.
Jul 29 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Severino (lat) may be able to start throwing Monday, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been on a planned two-week shutdown since he went on the injured list July 14, so he would be in the range of that timeframe if he is able to throw Monday. Boone suggested that the right-hander's return to a throwing program is contingent on the next few days going well for him, so it's not yet set in stone. Severino will likely need at least a week to ramp up once he starts throwing before he's able to return to the Yankees' rotation.
Jul 16 2022Severino (lat) isn't expected to throw for two weeks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino landed on the injured list with a low-grade right lat strain Thursday, and he'll presumably require more than the minimum of 15 days on the shelf since he'll need time to build back up following his shutdown. A better timetable for his return will likely come into focus once he's able to begin a throwing program.
Jul 14 2022Severino was placed on the 15-day injured list with a low-grade right lat strain Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino exited Wednesday's start against the Reds due to shoulder tightness and underwent an MRI on Thursday. The right-hander missed most of the 2019 season with a lat strain, but his current injury is being classified as a low-grade issue. The right-hander will still be sidelined until at least July 29, and it's not yet clear when the Yankees expect him to return.
Jul 13 2022Severino was diagnosed with right shoulder tightness after being removed from Wednesday's start against the Reds, and he'll undergo an MRI on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old exited prior to the third inning of Wednesday's contest after tossing a couple warmup pitches. Severino allowed four runs over two innings -- including three straight home runs -- prior to leaving the game, but the overriding concern at this point is the status of the oft-injured right-hander's shoulder.
Jul 7 2022Severino (5-3) earned the win against the Pirates on Wednesday, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out three and walking none across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was lights-out, throwing 58 of 88 pitches for strikes across six frames. He limited the Pirates offense to just four hits. It was Severino's third quality start in a row, but his first game without allowing a run since June 4. The righty had back-to-back losses in his previous two games (both against the Astros), but he picked up a dominant win Wednesday. He'll take a 3.11 ERA into his next outing.
Jun 30 2022Severino (4-3) allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has shown strikeout stuff all season -- he has 91 punchouts across 78 innings on the season -- but he induced only six swinging strikes across 87 pitches Thursday. Despite seemingly lacking his best stuff, Severino still managed to limit one of the better lineups in the league, with the only runs against him coming on a two-run double by Alex Bregman in the third inning. Severino also managed to work at least six innings for the seventh time in his last eight starts. Overall, he has a 3.35 ERA and a 91:23 K:BB across 78 innings on the season.
Jun 24 2022Severino (4-2) was charged with the loss Friday against the Astros after giving up three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander kept Houston in check through five innings, but he returned for the sixth and served up a three-run homer to Kyle Tucker. It was still a solid start for Severino, though he continues to be hurt by the long ball, as he's surrendered 11 through 13 starts. He has a 3.38 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 87:21 K:BB across 72 frames this season and tentatively lines up to pitch versus the A's on Wednesday.
Jun 19 2022Severino yielded five runs on three hits and four walks over five innings in Sunday's loss to Toronto. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was tagged early by Vladimir Guerrero's two-run shot in the first inning. He settled in to throw a few scoreless frames before George Springer hit a solo homer in the fifth. Severino was then charged with two more runs in the sixth while Miguel Castro was on the mound. It was the first time this season Severino issued more than two walks or allowed more than four runs in a start. The 28-year-old will carry a 3.27 ERA into his projected home start against Houston next week.
Jun 17 2022Severino will pitch Sunday in Toronto, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Assuming Severino still feels OK physically, he will make a start this week despite being a late scratch Thursday with an illness. He last pitched June 10 and has a 1.67 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB in 32.1 innings over his last five starts. Gerrit Cole will be pushed back to start Monday in Tampa Bay.
Jun 16 2022Severino (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees announced Thursday that Severino had tested negative for COVID-19 and would travel with the team during the upcoming road trip to Toronto, so his activation doesn't come as a significant surprise. The right-hander was initially scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Rays before being scratched, but the team hasn't yet revealed whether he'll start during the three-game series against the Blue Jays. Regardless of whether Severino takes the mound over the weekend, he should at least be able to make his next turn through the rotation.
Jun 10 2022Severino allowed a run on seven hits and a walk while striking out 10 in six innings during Friday's win over the Cubs. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino matched his season-high strikeout total during Friday's win, and he posted his fourth quality start in his last five outings. The right-hander threw 70 of 103 pitches for strikes, and the lone run he gave up came via a solo homer to Jason Heyward in the top of the fifth inning. However, Severino didn't get much run support from the Yankees' offense and was forced to settle for his second no-decision in his last four appearances. He projects to make his next start at home against the Rays on Thursday.
Jun 4 2022Severino (4-1) pitched seven scoreless, one-hit innings Saturday against the Tigers. He struck out 10, walked one and picked up the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was devastating with his slider, which generated whiffs on eight of 11 swings against (73 percent). Severino was topping out at 99 mph with his fastball and sitting 96.4 mph. He has 38 strikeouts in 31 innings over his last five starts and his season ERA is down to 2.95. Severino lines up for a home start against the Cubs next weekend.
May 29 2022Severino (3-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks while striking out eight in 6.1 innings of a 4-2 loss Sunday in Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through six innings, Severino allowed only two Rays to reach base, both on solo homers. In the seventh, the righty walked the first two batters before striking out Manuel Margot and being replaced. Both runners would come around to score as reliever Ron Marinaccio struggled with command. The 103 pitches by Severino were a season high and it was the third consecutive start where he pitched at least six innings. Through two months, the 28-year-old is putting up numbers very similar to his All-Star campaigns of 2017 and 2018. His next start will likely be next weekend against Detroit.
May 23 2022Severino struck out five in seven shutout innings while allowing eight hits and hitting two batters in a 5-0 loss Sunday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite allowing 10 baserunners, Severino held the White Sox scoreless by getting out of a number of jams, including loading the bases with no outs in the fifth. It was his longest outing since 2018 and the fourth consecutive start where he's thrown more than 90 pitches. In May, he's allowed three earned runs or fewer in each start and has compiled a 2.78 ERA with a 24:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings. He'll likely make one more start before the end of the month, this weekend in Tampa Bay.
May 16 2022Severino (3-0) earned the win Monday after tossing six innings, surrendering one run on one hit and two walks while striking out seven against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only blemish on Severino's line came in the bottom of the fourth frame when Anthony Santander took him deep for a solo shot. He registered his first quality start of the season and has now won both times he's taken the mound against Baltimore this year. After registering 12 strikeouts over 16 innings his prior three starts, Severino now has 15 punchouts across 10.2 frames in his last two outings. Overall, the 28-year-old now owns a 3.63 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 38 strikeouts over 34.2 innings in 2022.
May 11 2022Severino didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things looked bad for the right-hander when Toronto grabbed a 3-0 lead by the top of the second inning, but Severino was able to settle down and keep the game close before exiting after 97 pitches (61 strikes). The eight whiffs were a season high for the 28-year-old, but he's worked past the fifth inning only once in six starts and is still looking for his first quality start of the campaign. Severino will carry a 4.08 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB through 28.2 frames into his next outing.
May 1 2022Severino yielded four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk over five innings in Sunday's win over the Royals. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino began the game with a pair of scoreless innings before Michael Taylor's leadoff home run to begin the third. The Royals would plate three runs in the inning followed by another in the fourth. Severino is still 2-0 on the year despite allowing eight runs (seven earned) over his last two outings. He'll carry a 3.75 ERA into his projected home outing next weekend against the Rangers.
Apr 26 2022Severino (2-0) earned the win after striking out five in six innings while allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in a 12-8 victory Tuesday over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino efficiently retired the first 14 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit through the first five innings, needing just 62 pitches. After retiring the first batter in the sixth, he allowed a single, a walk and a three-run homer to cut the Yankees' lead in half. Following a leadoff double in the seventh, he was replaced. It was the first time since 2018 that he pitched six innings in a game. The Yankees have won all four of Severino's starts this year as he's compiled a 3.32 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19 innings.
Apr 21 2022Severino did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The three strikeouts and nine baserunners don't look great, but Severino had 11 swinging strikes on 88 pitches and now sits with a 2.08 ERA through three starts this season. Perhaps most importantly, Severino's four-seam fastball velocity is back up north of 97 mph. He's throwing his slider far less than he used to, scaling back its usage in favor of more changeups and cutters.
Apr 14 2022Severino (1-0) struck out six in five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks in a 3-0 win Thursday against Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced after pitching around trouble in the first and second innings. The 83 pitches were his most in an appearance since 2018. After missing the majority of the last three seasons, Thursday's start is quite promising for the two-time All-Star. His next start will likely be Wednesday in Detroit.
Apr 9 2022Severino did not factor in the decision against Boston on Saturday, completing three innings and allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yankees manager Aaron Bone indicated prior to the game that he was hopeful Severino would be able to throw 65-70 pitches after experiencing arm soreness during spring training, and the right-hander hit the lower end of that range in his first regular-season start since 2019. He managed to hold the Red Sox to two runs despite giving up three extra-base hits, with the big blow against him being a two-run homer off the bat of Alex Verdugo in the second inning. Despite the so-so final pitching line, it was a promising performance by the 28-year-old highlighted by five strikeouts. Severino's second turn on the mound will likely come on the road versus Toronto next week.
Apr 3 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Severino (arm) is "good" following a four-inning start in Saturday's 10-0 win over Atlanta, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was initially set to make his third start of the Grapefruit League slate Wednesday, but the Yankees instead had him throw a bullpen session after he dealt with arm soreness. Fortunately, Severino came out of the throwing session fine and returned to the mound Saturday with his best outing of the spring, as he limited Atlanta to no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out three in the 57-pitch appearance. The outing was Severino's final tuneup of the spring, with Boone indicating that the right-hander will take the hill for the Yankees' second game of the regular season next Saturday at home versus the Red Sox. Expect him to be capped at around 75 or 80 pitches in that start.
Mar 30 2022Severino (arm) reported no issues following his bullpen session Wednesday and is expected to start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given the multiple arm-related injuries and setbacks Severino has experienced over the last few seasons, fantasy managers were rightful to have some anxiety when he reported arm soreness earlier in the week. At least for the time being, Severino investors can breathe easy, as he wasn't shut down from throwing and felt fine physically coming out of Wednesday's mound session. Provided Severino is able to start Saturday as expected, he'll be only slightly behind in his throwing program, and the expectation remains that he'll be part of the Yankees' season-opening rotation. However, because Severino said he expects to throw just 40 pitches Saturday in his final outing of the spring, he could be capped at around 60-to-75 pitches when his first turn in the rotation comes up during the regular season.
Mar 29 2022Severino (arm) will throw a bullpen session session Wednesday instead of making his scheduled Grapefruit League start, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Arm troubles are always worrisome for a pitcher, especially one like Severino who's had his share of them already. This particular problem doesn't look like too much of an issue yet, as Severino will still throw in some capacity and is scheduled for a Grapefruit League appearance Saturday against Atlanta, but any setbacks could send him to the injured list to open the season.
Mar 25 2022Severino tossed 1.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Phillies on Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. He did not strike out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino struggled mightily to get the ball over the plate in his second spring outing, throwing only 22 of 49 pitches for strikes and issuing four free passes. When he avoided throwing balls, the right-hander was hit relatively hard, yielding two doubles among his four hits allowed. Severino is penciled in to fill a rotation spot for the Yankees this season, but he's struggled in both of his spring outings thus far, allowing a total of seven earned runs, eight hits and five walks over 3.2 innings while notching only one punchout.
Mar 21 2022Severino pitched two innings in the Yankees' Grapefruit League loss to Detroit on Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits and one walk while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently proclaimed Severino to be the "most ready" pitcher in camp for the team this spring, but the right-hander appeared rusty in his first Grapefruit League outing of 2022. He allowed a pair of runs in the first inning and served up a long ball to Robbie Grossman for two more runs in the second. Despite the rough start, it was promising to see Severino on the mound after he was limited to just six relief innings after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery last season. He figures to slot into the middle of New York's rotation and would be a valuable fantasy asset if he's able to recover the form that led to a 3.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 220:46 K:BB across 191.1 innings in his last healthy campaign, but there is plenty of risk given the fact that he's made only seven regular-season appearances over the past two seasons.
Mar 15 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino threw two innings of live batting practice Tuesday and is probably the "most ready" pitcher in big-league camp for the upcoming season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boone's comments are certainly eyebrow-raising, given that Severino hasn't been completely healthy for a spring training since 2018 and has made just seven combined regular-season appearances at the big-league level across the past three year due to lat and shoulder injuries in addition to his February 2020 Tommy John surgery. While Severino looks like he'll be part of the Opening Day rotation, the Yankees could still look to monitor his workloads carefully to some degree in 2022, given his light innings counts in recent years. That being said, if Severino is anywhere close to the pitcher he was during his last healthy season in 2018, he and ace Gerrit Cole would form one of the best top-of-the-rotation duos in the American League. Expect Severino's average draft position to continue climbing if he remains healthy and continues to draw raves from the coaching staff and reporters during his throwing sessions and Grapefruit League outings.
Feb 10 2022Severino said Thursday that he expects to be ready to handle a starting pitcher's workload to begin spring training, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino missed most of the 2021 campaign due to elbow, shoulder and groin issues, but he returned to game action in late September and struck out eight in six scoreless frames across four relief appearances. The right-hander recorded 30-plus starts in 2017 and 2018 and appears to be ready to rejoin the Yankees' rotation ahead of the 2022 season.
Sep 22 2021Severino pitched two scoreless innings against the Rangers on Tuesday, allowing two hits and striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first major-league game action since 2019, Severino gave up a double and a single but no runs while covering the final two frames of a New York victory. The right-hander registered five swinging strikes among his 30 pitches and averaged 94 mph on his fastball, per Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. The velocity was a few ticks below his norm prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery, but that isn't necessarily a concern considering Severino's long layoff. He's expected to continue working out of the bullpen for the remainder of the campaign as he gets re-acquainted with pitching to big-league hitters.
Sep 20 2021The Yankees reinstated Severino (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's next appearance for the Yankees will be his first since the 2019 postseason, after he missed nearly all of the subsequent two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In recent months, his season debut with the big club has been delayed by setbacks with a strained groin and a stiff right shoulder, but he was finally activated after he checked out fine during a simulated game over the weekend. Because he hasn't had time to fully ramp up, Severino will be limited to a bullpen role for the rest of the 2021 campaign. The Yankees will presumably look to bring Severino back as a member of the rotation in 2022.
Sep 19 2021The Yankees could activate Severino (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list as early as Monday, Max Goodman of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino impressed during his most recent live batting practice session Friday, but it's unclear if that'll be enough for him to rejoin the big club, or if he'll need to complete another bullpen session or two prior to being reinstated. Regardless, Severino is slated to fill a relief role for the Yankees upon his return, and he may need to prove himself in lower-leverage scenarios before manager Aaron Boone trusts him in bigger spots. Severino's last big-league appearance came during the 2019 postseason, as he missed the entire 2020 season while requiring from Tommy John surgery last February. He's been sidelined throughout the 2021 campaign while continuing his recovery from surgery and having experienced groin- and shoulder-related setbacks during his rehab assignments this summer.
Sep 17 2021Manager Aaron Boone said Severino (shoulder) looked "really sharp" during Friday's two-inning live batting practice session, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first time since his rehab assignment was halted in mid-August that Severino has faced live hitters, and he'll likely require another session or two, at least, before being activated from the injured list. The 27-year-old is poised to fill a bullpen role for the Yankees upon his return.
Sep 16 2021Severino (shoulder) will throw two innings in a simulated game Friday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino threw a bullpen session Monday and will face hitters Friday for the first time since his rehab assignment was paused in mid-August. The Yankees haven't yet indicated whether the right-hander will require a rehab assignment following Friday's sim game, but he'll likely be in the mix to rejoin the major-league club prior to the end of the season.
Sep 14 2021Manager Aaron Boone said that Severino (shoulder) will face live hitters later this week, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's Monday bullpen session figures to have gone well given that he's now progressing to facing hitters. Assuming he continues to progress without any setbacks, the right-hander could start a rehab assignment sometime within the next week, which would likely set him up to join the Yankees' bullpen before the end of the regular season.
Sep 12 2021Severino (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino resumed mound work last week, and manager Aaron Boone is hopeful that the right-hander will progress to facing hitters following Monday's throwing session. The 27-year-old likely won't have enough time to build back up to a starter's workload prior to the end of the regular season, but the team is hopeful that he'll be able to return as a reliever sometime in the final few weeks of the campaign.
Sep 6 2021Severino (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bullpen session will mark Severino's first mound work since he was pulled off his rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in mid-August with a right shoulder injury. The shoulder issue was the second setback Severino has experienced this season as he works his way back from his February 2020 Tommy John surgery; he was previously taken off a rehab assignment in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain. Ensuring he's able to pitch without any discomfort in his shoulder is now Severino's greatest concern, but because of the delays caused by his two setbacks, the 27-year-old doesn't look as though he'll have enough time to build back up for a starting role this season. Instead, Severino will likely prepare to join the Yankees as a reliever if and when he makes it back from the 60-day injured list.
Sep 2 2021Severino (shoulder) is reportedly doing well and is expected to return to mound work by next weekend, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has been playing catch after tests recently cleared him of structural damage to his shoulder. He was subsequently allowed to restart a throwing program but has yet to progress to mound work. Given the limited time remaining in the regular season, the chances of Severino pitching for the Yankees this season appear slim though not entirely unfathomable.
Aug 28 2021Severino (shoulder) played catch from 60 to 70 feet Friday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was recently cleared to resume throwing after undergoing an MRI and consulting with multiple medical professionals. The right-hander will progress from throwing on flat ground to bullpen sessions as he begins to ramp back up, and the team will closely monitor him before deciding when he may restart a rehab assignment. Severino could still return before the end of the regular season, but that scenario is far from a certainty.
Aug 27 2021Severino (shoulder) has been cleared to resume his throwing program, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander recently met with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who gave the thumbs up for Severino to begin throwing again. He had been shut down since Aug. 13 after experiencing tightness in his shoulder. Severino was in the midst of a rehab assignment prior to his latest setback, so he should resume throwing in minor-league games in the near future. It's unclear when he might be able to rejoin the big club or what his role will be when he returns.
Aug 19 2021Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Severino was cleared of any structural damage to his right shoulder after receiving a second medical opinion, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Severino will be shut down from throwing for the next week before the Yankees re-evaluate him. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino hasn't made an appearance for the Yankees since the 2019 postseason after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February 2020, but the health of his right elbow no longer appears to be a concern. The right-hander previously had a minor-league rehab assignment halted in mid-June when he incurred a Grade 2 groin strain, and after restarting his rehab assignment earlier this month, he made just two appearances for Double-A Somerset before experiencing tightness in his right shoulder. While he was fortunate to avoid any major damage to the shoulder, Severino's uncertain timeline to resume throwing could make it a challenge for him to make it back to the Yankees before the end of the season. If Severino does get activated from the 60-day injured list, he may have to work out of the bullpen, given the lack of time he'll have to build up his pitch count for starting duties.
Aug 17 2021Severino (elbow/groin) is still waiting on a second opinion on his right shoulder but will not throw for the remainder of the week, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino suffered a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery last week and was scratched from a scheduled rehab start after his shoulder didn't feel right. He underwent an MRI, which the Yankees sent out for a second opinion Monday. That opinion is expected to come in the next day or two, at which point Severino's next steps should become clearer.
Aug 16 2021Severino (elbow/groin) will receive a second opinion on his right shoulder in the coming days, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino underwent an MRI on Monday, but the Yankees haven't revealed the results. However, the right-hander wants to get insight from Dr. Neal ElAttrache before determining the next step in his recovery process. Severino had his rehab assignment paused after he was scratched from Friday's rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and a better idea of his status will likely be known once he receives his second opinion.
Aug 14 2021Severino (elbow/groin) will visit a doctor Monday to get his tight shoulder checked out. He will undergo an MRI, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has experienced multiple setbacks as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in February of last year. His rehab was first paused in June due to a groin strain and hit another snag Friday, as he was scratched due to tightness in his shoulder. The Yankees are framing the latest pause as precautionary, but it's hard not to worry about a shoulder issue for a pitcher. Clarity on his return timeline should emerge following Monday's visit.
Aug 13 2021Severino (groin/elbow) will return to New York to be evaluated after he was scratched from Friday's rehab start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Triple-A manager Doug Davis said that Severino "didn't feel right" while warming up Friday, so the team held him out as a precaution. While Davis is optimistic that the right-hander isn't dealing with a serious issue, more clarity regarding his status will likely be revealed once he meets with team doctors.
Aug 9 2021Severino (groin/elbow) will make another rehab start Friday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino struck out five in four scoreless innings during Sunday's rehab start, and manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander will use Friday's appearance to build up more. Boone said that the team hasn't ruled out reinstating the 27-year-old from the injured list after Friday's outing.
Aug 5 2021Severino (groin/elbow) is scheduled to make the second start of his minor-league rehab assignment at High-A Hudson Valley on Sunday, Justin Shackil of WFAN Sports Radio New York reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino will return to the mound on the typical four days' rest after he restarted his rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset. He covered 2.1 innings and tossed 43 pitches (28 strikes) in the outing, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out four. After Sunday's rehab start, Severino is expected to require one or two more outings in the minors before he gets clearance to make his 2021 debut with the big club, likely in late August or early September.
Aug 2 2021Severino (elbow/groin) will report to Double-A Somerset on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees are planning on Severino tossing 40-to-50 pitches in the rehab outing, his first game action since June 12. While ramping up following his February 2020 Tommy John surgery, Severino suffered a Grade 2 right groin strain, and his recovery from that injury looks to be the greater concern at this juncture. The Yankees are seemingly preparing to bring Severino back from the 60-day injured list as a starter, so he may require two or three additional rehab starts beyond Tuesday before making his return from the IL. General manager Brian Cashman estimated Sunday that Severino will likely rejoin the Yankees at some point between Aug. 20 and Sept. 1, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Jul 29 2021Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino (elbow/groin) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment Tuesday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After completing a simulated game Thursday without issue, Severino received the green light to move on the final phase of his rehab from Tommy John surgery and a Grade 2 groin strain, the latter of which resulted in him being pulled off his initial rehab assignment in mid-June. The Yankees haven't announced which affiliate Severino will join or what kind of workload he'll handle Tuesday, but he'll most likely be eased in with a light pitch count as he begins the ramp-up process. Severino is expected to stretch out for starting duty, and he could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list to make his 2021 debut for the Yankees in mid-August.
Jul 28 2021Severino (elbow) will throw a simulated game Thursday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was initially slated to resume his rehab assignment Thursday, but the game was up in the air due to a rainy forecast. The simulated game should allow the right-hander to pitch in a more controlled setting, and it will mark his fourth live session since mid-June. Assuming all goes well Thursday, Severino's next appearance could be in a rehab game.
Jul 27 2021Severino (elbow) tossed another live batting practice session Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It marked Severino's third live session since the right-hander's rehab assignment was paused because of a right groin strain. It seems possible that his next step will be to resume his rehab stint, though the Yankees could opt to have him throw another simulated game first. Once he's sent on a rehab assignment, the plan is for the 27-year-old to get stretched out to be able to throw five or six innings. With that in mind, he remains on track for a mid-to-late August return.
Jul 24 2021Severino (elbow) tossed two simulated innings and totaled 38 pitches at Fenway Park on Saturday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino appears to be closing in on a minor-league rehab assignment, though it's not yet clear whether the Yankees will ask him to toss another simulated game first. Once he does start pitching in games, the Yankees plan to have him build up to five or six innings before they consider bringing him back up to the big-league roster.
Jul 22 2021Severino (elbow) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session this weekend and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment by the middle of next week, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino emerged from Sunday's 30-pitch live batting practice session without incident and completed a bullpen session Thursday as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was expected to return from the injured list earlier in the season, but a Grade 2 groin strain suffered in mid-June resulted in a brief shutdown that pushed back the timeline for his 2021 debut. At this point, Severino is in the process of ramping up again, and he'll likely need at least three rehab outings in the minors to build up his pitch count for starting duty. He could be ready to pitch for the Yankees at some point in mid-to-late August.
Jul 18 2021Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino (elbow) fared well Sunday during a 30-pitch outing against live hitters, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing hitters for the first time since being pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain, Severino appeared to be in good physical shape, according to Max Goodman of SI.com. Boone said that Severino will face hitters again in five or six days before the Yankees determine whether the right-hander is ready to head back out on a rehab assignment. The Yankees want Severino to build up to five or six innings in his rehab starts before bringing him back from the 60-day injured list, so he's realistically at least a month away from making his 2021 big-league debut.
Jul 11 2021Severino (elbow) tossed a couple bullpen sessions within the last week and his next step will be facing live hitters, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has thrown a number of bullpen sessions early in July. It's not clear exactly when he will progress to face live hitters, but the team has stated that he is trending in the right direction. Severino could begin a lengthy rehab assignment soon.
Jul 8 2021Severino (elbow/groin) threw another bullpen Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino resumed mound work Saturday, and he was able to throw off the bullpen mound a second time Wednesday. If he feels good following Wednesday's throwing session, the right-hander could face hitters as early as this weekend. Severino's rehab from Tommy John surgery was delayed in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain, but he could begin a rehab assignment in the near future if he remains on track in his recovery.
Jul 3 2021Severino (elbow/groin) threw off a bullpen mound Saturday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees were hopeful that Severino could resume mound work by July 4, and he was able to meet that goal during Saturday's bullpen session. The right-hander has been recovering from Tommy John surgery to begin the year, but his rehab was delayed in mid-June due to a Grade 2 groin strain. A better idea of Severino's return timetable could be revealed based on how he responds after he threw 20-25 pitches Saturday, though for now it sounds like he could return to the Yankees by early August if he stays on track in his recovery.
Jul 2 2021Severino (elbow/groin) could return to throwing from a mound by July 4, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's rehab from Tommy John surgery was delayed in mid-June after he was diagnosed with a Grade 2 groin strain, and he has yet to return to the mound. However, the right-hander has been able to run and throw from flat ground, so it appears that he's not far off from mound work. General manager Brian Cashman previously indicated that the groin strain would delay Severino's return to the majors by 4-to-6 weeks, which would potentially have him back with the Yankees by early August.
Jun 25 2021Severino (elbow/groin) could resume mound work in a week to 10 days, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery, but he's also dealing with a Grade 2 groin strain that he sustained during a rehab assignment earlier in June. He's been playing catch recently, and he was able to run full sprints Thursday. It's not yet clear when the right-hander will return to game action, but his return to the mound will be a significant step in his recovery.
Jun 24 2021Severino (elbow/groin) ran full sprints Thursday, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but the importance of his ability to sprint is tied to the Grade 2 groin strain he suffered during a minor-league rehab appearance June 12. The injury has held back his rehab assignment, so he'll need to be fully recovered before he can return to game action and continue to build up his arm. The right-hander is unlikely to return to the big club until August.
Jun 19 2021Severino (elbow/groin) played catch on the field ahead of Saturday's game against the Athletics, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino suffered a Grade 2 groin strain during his rehab stint at High-A Hudson Valley on June 12, but he was able to resume throwing a week later. While it was encouraging to see him play catch Saturday, the right-hander's setback is expected to delay his return by about a month, so he'll likely be sidelined until at least late July or early August.
Jun 15 2021Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Severino (elbow) suffered a Grade 2 groin strain during his rehab stint at High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. The Yankees were hoping to have the right-hander back in the starting rotation by the end of June, but the groin injury will delay his return by about a month. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino appeared to be in a lot of pain after he exited Saturday's start, and Tuesday's update confirms that he suffered a rather serious setback in his return from Tommy John surgery. Given Boone's updated timeline, a late-July return to the Yankees' rotation represents the absolute best-case scenario for the right-hander, but he'll need a perfectly smooth next few weeks for that to become a reality.
Jun 14 2021Severino (elbow) is scheduled to meet with Yankees team doctors Monday to receive further evaluation for the right groin injury he picked up in his rehab start Saturday at High-A Hudson Valley, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his second minor-league outing in his rehab program for Tommy John surgery, Severino retired five hitters before bowing out in the second inning with what appeared to be a painful-looking groin injury. Severino was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Sunday, but the Yankees likely won't reveal the results of those tests until after he's examined by team doctors. More information regarding the extent of his groin injury along with a timeline for him to resume his rehab assignment should come soon, but even if Severino's setback is deemed minor, he still may be hard-pressed to make it back from the 60-day injured list before the end of July.
Jun 12 2021Severino (elbow) suffered a right groin injury during his rehab outing with High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday and will undergo an MRI on Sunday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had to be helped off the field, which suggests that there's at least a chance the injury could be serious. The Yankees will surely have a better grasp on the severity of the groin issue following Sunday's MRI.
Jun 6 2021Severino (elbow) threw 34 pitches in his rehab start for Low-A Tampa on Sunday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's fastball hit 98.8 mph, and he also mixed in 11 sliders in his first rehab appearance Sunday as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander is expected to make his next rehab start Saturday, and he could report to High-A Hudson Valley for the outing, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
Jun 5 2021Severino (elbow) will start Sunday with the Low-A Tampa Tarpons. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This marks the beginning of Severino's rehab assignment as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. The buildup he'll require means he's unlikely to return for at least another month, but the fact that he's pitching in games again is very encouraging for the hard-throwing righty and the Yankees.
May 31 2021Severino (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment Sunday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been throwing bullpen sessions recently as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, and he'll throw three simulated innings Monday. If he feels good afterward, the right-hander should return to game action in the minors Sunday. Severino will likely require several rehab starts to build up his workload, but he appears to be trending in the right direction.
May 28 2021Severino (elbow) threw a live bullpen session Wednesday and is close to going on a rehab assignment, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has now completed multiple successful bullpen sessions as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. Though manager Aaron Boone didn't specify when Severino would begin a rehab assignment, he did indicate that the pitcher "is getting close to that point." Assuming Severino doesn't encounter any setbacks, he could make his return to the big leagues sometime in July.
May 22 2021Severino (elbow) is close to pitching in games, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Recordreports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino's latest simulated game was reportedly a huge success, and a notable step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The righty will surely require a lot of rehab work to build up a starter's inning load, but there's reason for optimism that he'll return to the Yankees' rotation in the early part of the summer.
May 14 2021Severino (elbow) threw to hitters at the Yankees' player development complex in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Severino's first time throwing to live hitters since undergoing Tommy John surgery in February of 2020. The right-hander faced a group of hitters that included top prospect Jasson Dominguez and reportedly touched 96 mph with his fastball. Manager Aaron Boone indicated that the session went "really well," so it appears that Severino didn't experience any setbacks. He remains on target for a return later this summer.
May 12 2021Severino (elbow) is dealing with a stiff back Wednesday and will throw his live BP on Thursday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was initially expected to face hitters Wednesday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last February. Outside of Wednesday's minor setback, the right-hander has been progressing well in his recovery in recent weeks and could return to game action around the middle of July.
May 1 2021Severino is expected to face live hitters May 10 or 11 for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last February, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been progressing in recent weeks and recently worked up to throwing to batters standing in the box while mixing in all of his pitches. Though he still has hurdles to clear before being ready to pitch again in the majors, the right-hander appears to be on track for a return sometime around the middle of July.
Apr 29 2021Severino (elbow) isn't far off from facing live hitters, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been progressing through a throwing program in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he was able to resume firing sliders in early April. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Severino is "getting close" to facing live hitters, which would represent another significant step on his path back to the big leagues. The right-hander is currently on the 60-day injured list and isn't expected back until July.
Apr 3 2021Severino (elbow) has progressed to throwing sliders from the mound as well as fastballs, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He continues to do well, according to manager Aaron Boone, and after being limited to fastballs during spring training, it is encouraging to hear he has progressed to throwing breaking balls. Severino doesn't have a clear timetable for his return, but the hope is that he will be back sometime this summer.
Mar 15 2021Severino (elbow) has been tossing two bullpen sessions per week but is only throwing fastballs for the time being, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino indicated Monday that his rehab from Tommy John surgery is going according to plan, but he will nonetheless miss a significant portion of the campaign as he continues to recover. The fact that the right-hander is able to throw twice a week is certainly a good sign, and, according to Severino, it may not be long before he's able to progress to breaking pitches.
Mar 11 2021Severino (elbow) threw his first bullpen session of the spring Tuesday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 20-pitch side session was also Severino's first since he underwent Tommy John surgery in February 2020. Per Ackert, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Severino bounced back well from the workout, so the right-hander will get back on the field Thursday to throw off flat ground. He'll likely need to complete several more bullpen sessions before the Yankees clear him to face hitters in batting practice, perhaps in early April.
Mar 5 2021According to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, Severino (elbow) is doing well with his throwing program and should start pitching off a mound soon, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: News of Severino's return to the mound has been floated for several weeks, and it appears that there have been no setbacks that would place a road block on the right-hander's progression. Though an exact date for Severino's next step has yet to be determined, he remains on track to return to big-league action sometime this summer.
Feb 27 2021Severino (elbow) is expected to throw off a mound within the next two weeks, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino is past the midpoint of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in February of last year, but he still has plenty of work to do. He won't throw off a mound next week but is expected to do so during the following week as he targets a return sometime over the summer.
Feb 23 2021Severino (elbow) landed on the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move prevents Severino from returning in the first two months of the season, though he was never expected back that soon after undergoing Tommy John surgery in February of last year. General manager Brian Cashman previously gave him the somewhat vague timetable of "late summer," while Severino himself has said he expects to return in June or July. The move clears a spot on the Yankees' 40-man roster for the team to add Brett Gardner, who re-signed in a corresponding move.
Feb 22 2021Severino (elbow) expects to pitch off a mound soon and anticipates a return to major-league action in June or July, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees previously mentioned late summer as their target for Severino's return from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent back in February of 2020. Severino sounds slightly more optimistic about his timeline, though that's hardly uncommon for players to have a more positive outlook about their return dates than teams. Which timeline winds up being correct will have a large impact on his fantasy value, as a June return could see Severino make nearly 20 starts, while a late summer return could see him make less than 10. At this stage, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News notes that Severino is throwing from 90 feet and will increase his distance to 120 feet Tuesday, potentially setting him up for a return to mound work by the end of spring training.
Feb 18 2021Severino (elbow) has played catch from 120 feet and should advance to mound work within the next few weeks, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino continues to make progress as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, a procedure he underwent in February of 2020. He appears to be still on track to return sometime late this summer, though the Yankees have yet to offer a more precise timeline.
Jan 29 2021Severino is on track to return from Tommy John surgery in late summer, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino underwent the procedure in February of 2020. If his recovery was on the fast end of the typical timeline, he could be pushing to return not long after Opening Day, but general manager Brian Cashman seemed to suggest he'd need a bit longer than that. "Late summer" is unfortunately somewhat of a vague time frame, but it sounds as though there's a real chance Severino doesn't wind up making much more than six or seven starts this season, which makes even a pitcher of his talents tough to hold onto in many formats.
Oct 14 2020Severino's (elbow) rehab is going well, and he could return to the majors in June or July, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February, and he's received positive reports regarding his rehab so far. He's currently throwing off flat ground from 90 feet. There's been optimism that he could pitch at some point in 2021, and general manager Brian Cashman provided a clearer timetable for his return as the Yankees head into the offseason.
Jun 28 2020Severino (elbow) was placed on the 45-day injured list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was inevitable after Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February. He has been progressing well in his rehab and is optimistic that he will be able to pitch for the Yankees at some point in 2021.
May 31 2020Severino (elbow) said Saturday that he's progressing well in his recovery from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in February and remains optimistic that he'll be ready to pitch for the Yankees at some point in 2021, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino has been a regular at the Yankees' spring facility in Tampa during baseball's hiatus, with the right-hander relaying that he's been able to go through a weightlifting program five days a week since having the procedure. He expects to receive clearance to resume throwing at some point during the summer, but it may not be until next spring that the Yankees give him the green light to face hitters. Before requiring surgery, Severino was at least able to secure a four-year, $40 million contract extension with the Yankees that bought out his remaining arbitration years.
Mar 18 2020Severino (elbow) has been rehabbing at the Yankees' spring-training complex, Marly Rivera of ESPN reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino is among a group of Yankees players and coaches who have chosen to stay in Florida during MLB's hiatus. The right-hander is in the very early stages of his rehab from Tommy John surgery and won't return to game action until 2021.
Feb 27 2020Severino's Tommy John surgery went as expected Thursday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team also announced that Severino had an existing bone chip removed from his elbow during the surgery. While this is good news for the right-hander, he won't be available for the 2020 campaign and likely a portion of the 2021 season.
Feb 25 2020Severino will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was reported earlier Tuesday the right-hander would require Tommy John surgery and be lost for the season, and he'll officially go under the knife later this week. It's a tough blow for Severino, who was limited to three starts last season by lat and rotator cuff injuries, and his 2021 campaign figures to be significantly impacted, as well.
Feb 21 2020Severino will be absent from camp for three days to undergo tests to figure out what's wrong with his forearm, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After lat and shoulder issues limited him to just 12 innings last season, Severino already has a seemingly unrelated issue early in this year's camp. The fact that he'll fly to New York for tests would seem to indicate that the Yankees are quite concerned, though his expected recovery timeline won't be clear until the results of the tests are released.
Feb 20 2020Manager Aaron Boone said Severino will be shut down for at least a few days with forearm soreness, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The issue apparently dates back to his last start of the 2019 playoffs, and it could put the start of his season in jeopardy. Per Jack Curry of YES Network, the right-hander will be examined by Dr. Chris Ahmad on Friday, after which more should be known about the severity of the issue. His current treatment plan includes anti-inflammatories and rest. General manager Brian Cashman said the team sent him in for a series of tests -- multiple different times -- over the offseason, though everything came back clean, aside from a "loose body" in Severino's elbow that isn't causing him any problems, per David Lennon of Newsday. The Yankees will certainly proceed cautiously with Severino, as forearm soreness can often be the precursor to a more serious injury.
Oct 19 2019Severino is available in the bullpen for Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros on Saturday, James Wagner of The New York Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino would be pitching on three days' rest if he appears, as he threw 4.1 innings in Game 3 on Tuesday. The Yankees may prefer to not use him if possible, as he'd be lined up to throw Game 7 on Sunday, should the series get that far.
Oct 18 2019Severino will pitch Game 7 of the ALCS against the Astros on Sunday should the series extend past Saturday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino took the loss in Game 3, surrendering two runs on five hits and three walks while fanning six over 4.1 innings of work. Gerrit Cole would toe the rubber for the opposition should the series extend to Game 7.
Oct 15 2019Severino (0-1) gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts over 4.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to Houston in Game 3 of the ALCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both runs off of Severino came via the long ball, with Jose Altuve taking him deep in the first inning and Josh Reddick doing the same one inning later. Severino left the game with one out in the fifth after giving up a single to Michael Brantley and a walk to Alex Bregman. It was just the fifth start of the season for Severino, who missed most of the year with a shoulder injury before making three regular-season starts in September and another one in the ALDS against Minnesota.
Oct 11 2019Severino will start Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against Houston on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino fired four scoreless innings during Game 3 of the ALDS against the Twins, and he'll get the ball in Game 3 of the ALCS after Masahiro Tanaka and James Paxton toe the rubber in Games 1 and 2.
Oct 3 2019Severino will start Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Twins, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Oct 3 2019Severino will start Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Twins, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 25-year-old made only three starts in the regular season after missing the majority of the season due to shoulder and lat injuries, but will be a part of a three-man rotation in the ALDS with James Paxton and Masahiro Tanaka. Severino owns a 1.50 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched this year.
Sep 28 2019Severino (1-1) allowed two runs on a hit and four walks while striking out four over three innings, taking the loss versus the Rangers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino needed 72 pitches (44 strikes) to labor through his start, and a two-run double from Rougned Odor was enough to stick him with the loss. Those are the only runs Severino has allowed in three starts since returning from shoulder and lat injuries that kept him sidelined since the spring. Severino is expected to be a part of the rotation in the playoffs.
Sep 23 2019Severino (1-0) earned the win against Toronto on Sunday, completing five scoreless innings and giving up three hits. He struck out nine and did not walk any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino appeared to be in peak form in his second start of the season, allowing only four baserunners in the dominant performance. After throwing 67 pitches in his debut, the 25-year-old was stretched to 80 on Sunday, making it through five innings to qualify for the win. Severino has not missed a beat despite sitting out most of the season with shoulder and lat injuries; through his first two starts, he has hurled nine scoreless innings while racking up 13 strikeouts. He'll make his final appearance of the regular season at Texas on Saturday before heading into the postseason.
Sep 17 2019Severino pitched four shutout innings, allowing only two hits with two walks and four strikeouts during a no-decision against the Angels on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Severino returning from the IL, he was on a short leash. That's too bad because he only needed three more outs to qualify for the win, but owners couldn't have asked for anything more during his 2019 debut. Severino owns career marks of 41-25, 3.51 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, and owners should feel confident he can achieve those marks in a couple starts down the stretch with the way he pitched Tuesday.
Sep 13 2019Severino (lat) confirmed Friday that he will start Tuesday against the Angels, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday will be Severino's first big-league appearance of the season after he dealt with injury issues dating back to spring training. He won't be able to handle a full starter's workload right away, but he did reach 64 pitches in his final rehab start, so he should be able to pitch fairly deep into the game as long as he's efficient.
Sep 12 2019Severino (lat) is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Angels, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is set to rejoin the rotation next week, as expected. Severino has built up to 64 pitches during rehab starts and hit 98 mph with his fastball, so he could go deep enough to qualify for the win. He isn't likely to be his dominant pre-injury self right out of the gate, but he still makes for a decent option in most formats given team context and his upside as a frontline starter.
Sep 8 2019Severino (lat) will make one more rehab start Wednesday for Double-A Trenton before rejoining the big-league rotation, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This would put him on track to rejoin the big-league rotation Sept. 17 at home against the Angels. He will throw 60-plus pitches in this final tuneup in the minors. Severino has given up three earned runs while striking out seven and walking none in four innings across two rehab starts.
Sep 7 2019Manager Aaron Boone said Severino (lat) could make his next start for Double-A Trenton, but the team has yet to make a final decision for his next appearance, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino made his second rehab appearance with Trenton on Friday and the Yankees are expected to decide this weekend their plans for his next outing. The 25-year-old threw 50 pitches over three innings Friday, which provides some idea of his potential usage should he next appear in the majors. Per Adler, Boone also said that Severino will not follow an opener and will be used as a traditional starter.
Sep 6 2019Severino (lat) will have the next step in his rehab decided by Sunday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino made his second minor-league rehab appearance Friday for Double-A Trenton, tossing 50 pitches in three innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out five. Following Severino's performance, Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that the 25-year-old's next step would be decided in discussions taking place within the organization over the next 24-48 hours. Trenton plays again Tuesday, so he could be in line for another rehab start with the Double-A squad next week, or the Yankees may elect to bring him up to the big club to continue his recovery in the majors.
Sep 4 2019Severino (lat) will pitch for Double-A Trenton on Friday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Severino was originally scheduled to make another rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but with inclement weather forcing a change to the scheduling of their playoff series he will instead head to Trenton. The 25-year-old gave up a pair of runs in one inning during his first rehab appearance Sunday. Should all go well in his second outing, he could return to the Yankees in the coming week.
Sep 2 2019Severino (lat) will make another rehab appearance Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

Jul 23 2018Severino (14-3) allowed seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits while fanning eight across five innings Monday as took the loss against Tampa Bay.Severino's outing went downhill in the fifth inning after allowing a three-run homer. He would surrender three more in the sixth before being lifted with a four-run deficit. Severino has struggled over his past three outings, as he's given up 14 runs (13 earned) through 15 innings while striking out 14. Despite a poor performance, he'll head into his next start with a sparkling 2.63 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with a 152:32 K:BB across 133.1 innings.
Jul 12 2018Severino pitched five innings Thursday, yielding four runs on nine hits and a walk in the 7-4 win over Cleveland. He gave up two home runs and struck out just one batter in the no-decision.The 24-year-old right-hander coughed up a homer to Edwin Encarnacion in the first inning and Jose Ramirez in the fifth. Severino came into Thursday's start with a 10.4 K/9, so the one-strikeout performance was a bit of a surprise. He had lowered his ERA to 1.98 before allowing seven runs across 10 innings in his last two appearances. Severino earned a win in his previous five starts and will look to get back to form next Saturday against the Mets.
Jul 7 2018Severino (14-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out five. The right-hander needed 97 pitches (70 strikes) to get through the minimum innings required for a win, and Severino served up multiple homers for the first time all season, but the outcome was never in doubt after the Yankees' offense staked him to a 4-0 lead before he even took the mound. He's already matched his win total from all of last year, and Severino will carry a 2.12 ERA into his next outing Thursday in Cleveland.
Jul 1 2018Severino (13-2) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out six across 6.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against the Red Sox.Severino didn't need the plentiful run support he received as he cruised to his major-league leading 13th win. The lone blemish of his line was the three free passes he handed out, but he had little trouble working around them by allowing only two runners to reach scoring position throughout his start. As he has for much of the season, Severino ranks among the league's best in nearly every pitching stat, highlighted by a 0.95 WHIP and 1.98 ERA.
Jun 26 2018Severino (12-2) blanked the Phillies over seven innings Tuesday and was credited with the win. He allowed six hits and struck out nine.Severino was back to his dominant ways Tuesday following his somewhat shaky start (3 ER in 5.2 IP) against the Mariners last time out. The righty threw 72 of his 103 pitches for strikes and was still pushing 100 MPH with his fastball in his final inning of work. He's earned a winning decision in five of his last six starts and currently owns a dazzling 2.10 ERA. He'll take the mound against the Red Sox on Sunday.
Jun 21 2018Severino (11-2) picked up the win Thursday against the Mariners, allowing three earned runs over 5.2 innings. He struck out five while allowing eight hits and three walks. It wasn't Severino's sharpest outing, but he did enough to limit the damage and secure his 11th win, which ties him with Corey Kluber for the most in the majors. He surrendered a two-run shot to Kyle Seager in the second and got himself into trouble in the sixth before David Robertson came on to put out the fire. Thursday's outing also snapped Severino's four-game streak with at least seven strikeouts, but it's worth noting he was facing a disciplined Mariners lineup that strikes out at the fourth-lowest clip in the AL. Severino is lined up to face Jake Arrieta and the Phillies in his next start.
Jun 16 2018Severino (10-2) earned the win against the Rays on Saturday with eight shutout innings, allowing only three hits and two walks while striking out nine.Severino pitched a gem Saturday, throwing 71 of his 102 pitches for strikes and completely stifling Tampa Bay's bats. Jun 10 2018Severino (9-2) took the loss against the Mets on Sunday, giving up two earned runs on five hits over five innings, striking out seven and walking two as the Yankees fell 2-0.Severino was cruising through four innings, but he gave up a two-run home run to the Mets' Todd Frazier in the fifth that proved to be the difference in this defeat. He's still in the midst of a monster campaign, as Severino has put up a 2.27 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP and a 109:23 K:BB over 91 innings, making him one of the safest fantasy starters around through the first part of the season.
Jun 4 2018Severino (9-1) tossed eight one-run innings while earning the win Monday against the Tigers, allowing four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.Severino was touched up for a run on two hits in the first inning, but he was flat out dominant as he allowed just two baserunners the rest of the way. He threw a healthy 76 percent of his pitches for strikes, including 17 swinging strikes as he notched double-digit punchouts for the second straight start. Severino now has a 2.20 ERA and a 10.6 K/9 in addition to his American League-leading number of wins. He'll look to keep it rolling this weekend against the Mets.
May 30 2018Severino (8-1) got the win Wednesday, striking out 11 over seven innings while allowing two runs on four hits and a walk against the Astros.Severino was dominant from the get-go, striking out seven of the first nine batters he faced on his way to inducing 15 swinging strikes in all. The 24-year-old has put together a stretch of nine straight quality starts, fanning at least 10 with one walk or fewer in three of those. His eight wins trail only Max Scherzer (nine), and he now boasts 10.6 K/9 to go along with an elite 2.31 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. Next on tap is a road start in Detroit on Monday.
May 25 2018Severino allowed one run on four hits and four walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Friday.Mike Trout touched him up for a homer and Andrew Heaney's impressive showing on the other side kept Severino out of the win column, but it was another excellent performance from the 24-year-old. Severino has rattled off eight consecutive quality starts and ranks among the league leaders in every traditional pitching category. He will look to replicate his May 2 shutout of the Astros his next time out, this time at home.
May 19 2018Severino (7-1) allowed three earned runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out six across six innings to earn the win Saturday against the Royals. This wasn't Severino's sharpest start as he allowed 10 baserunners, his second-highest mark of any start this season. However, he kept the ball in the park and didn't allow a home run for his fourth consecutive start. That was enough for him to earn the win thanks to the run support he received, placing him in a tie with Corey Kluber for the American League lead in wins with seven. There should be no concern regarding his performance going forward as he has proven himself to be one of the best and most consistent starters around the league.
May 13 2018Severino (6-1) got the win against Oakland on Sunday, scattering five hits and one earned run over six innings, striking out seven and walking two as the Yankees eventually prevailed 6-2.Severino continued his phenomenal start to the season in picking up his sixth win in his first nine starts, lowering his ERA to 2.14 in the process. He's also got a sparkling 0.90 WHIP to go along with a 70:14 K:BB and he's been pretty much untouchable all year save for one hiccup against the Red Sox back in April, making him one of the more reliable fantasy starters in the early going regardless of the matchup.
May 8 2018Severino (5-1) racked up 11 strikeouts in Tuesday's no decision, allowing two earned runs on six hits and no walks over six innings during the Yankees' victory over the Red Sox.Severino came out for the top of the seventh and gave up a leadoff single to Eduardo Nunez before being pulled. Nunez then stole second base and scored the tying run on Mookie Betts' two-out triple. The 24-year-old continued his stellar start to the season and now has a 2.21 ERA and 0.87 WHIP with 63 strikeouts and 12 walks over 53 innings. The right-hander is next slated to start Sunday at home against the Athletics.
May 2 2018Severino (5-1) fired his first career shutout in Wednesday's win over the Astros, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out 10.He was in command from the jump, as Severino threw 83 of 110 pitches for strikes while generating 17 swinging strikes and starting off 27 of 33 batters with first-pitch strikes. The right-hander has delivered four straight quality starts, and he'll take a 2.11 ERA into his next outing Tuesday at home against the Red Sox.
Apr 27 2018Severino got a no-decision in the Yankees' 4-3 victory over the Angels on Friday, giving up three earned runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.Add another solid outing to the list to start the season for the dynamic right-hander, who now sports a 2.61 ERA, a 0.89 WHIP and a brilliant 42:11 K:BB through 38 innings. He established himself as a legitimate fantasy ace last season and so far this year, Severino appears poised to deliver another standout campaign.
Apr 22 2018Severino (4-1) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings in Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Blue Jays.Severino put on a great performance Sunday, as he struck out six batters en route to his second consecutive win. The lone blemish on his effort came in the sixth inning when Teoscar Hernandez slugged a home run. Since the start of the season, Severino has allowed more than two runs just once over five outings and now owns a 2.32 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. His next start projects to be Friday against the Angels.
Apr 16 2018Severino (3-1) tossed six scoreless innings while earning the win Monday against the Marlins, allowing one hit and one walk with eight strikeouts.Severino was flat out dominant in this one, throwing first-pitch strikes to 15 of 20 batters as he registered a season high in strikeouts. He curiously induced just one groudball out as opposed to nine flyouts. He likely could've gone deeper into the game, but he was spotted a massive lead and exited luxuriously after just 86 pitches. Severino has been excellent in the early going, posting a 2.63 ERA and a 10.5 K/9 through 24 innings.
Apr 15 2018Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Tigers has been postponed, but Severino will pitch the scheduled night game if that game is not also postponed. The first game is not happening, but the second game has not yet been ruled out. Severino will either pitch Sunday or Monday at home against the Marlins.
Apr 15 2018Severino will not make his scheduled start Sunday against the Tigers as the game has been postponed due to inclement weather, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Both games of Sunday's doubleheader have now been postponed due to poor weather. It's possible that Severino will simply have his start pushed back to Monday, but no formal announcements have yet been made.
Apr 15 2018Severino will start Monday's game against the Marlins, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.Severino's Sunday start against the Tigers was postponed due to inclement weather, so he'll now start the first game of the team's upcoming two-game series against the Marlins. He'll be followed by Masahiro Tanaka on Tuesday and CC Sabathia (hip) on Thursday.
Apr 11 2018Severino (2-1) allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out six batters through five innings during Tuesday's 14-1 loss to the Red Sox.This was a tape-measuring matchup among division rivals, and Boston made a statement. Severino shined through his first two starts of the season, and even with this disappointing outing, the 24-year-old righty sports a respectable 3.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 10.0 K/9. Tuesday's poor showing is probably best viewed as a blip on the radar, as Severino's body of work dating back to last season positions him among the top starting pitchers in the league. He projects to face the Tigers on the road next.
Apr 4 2018Severino earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits and one walk across 7.1 innings Wednesday against the Rays. He struck out seven.Severino was slightly overshadowed by a trio of homers from teammates Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez, but the young lefty was dominant in his second outing of the season. The 24-year-old started off slow and allowed a run in the first inning, but he quickly settled in and faced the minimum batters in five of the next six frames. He needed just 92 pitches, 63 of which went for strikes. Severino is now 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB through two starts (13 innings) this season, and he'll look to keep things rolling in what will be a two-start week (4/10 @BOS, 4/15 @DET).
Mar 29 2018Severino (1-0) pitched 5.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts to record the win against Toronto on Thursday. He allowed just a single hit and three walks. It was a smooth season debut for the righty, as he threw 60 of 91 pitches for strikes and faced the minimum in three of his five full innings. Severino was a coveted asset in drafts this spring after recording a 2.98 ERA, 3.12 FIP, 1.04 WHIP and 10.7 K/9 last season, and fantasy owners should be thrilled with his Opening Day showing. He lines up to face the Rays at Yankee Stadium next.
Mar 17 2018Severino will start for the Yankees on Opening Day in Toronto, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. This comes as no surprise, as Severino is the Yankees' best starter and one of the best pitchers in baseball. He has a 3.60 ERA in 20 career innings at the Rogers Centre. Severino will be followed in the rotation by Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Sonny Gray and Jordan Montgomery.
Mar 8 2018Severino will make his first Grapefruit League start Thursday against the Phillies, Brendan Kuty and Randy Miller of NJ.com reports. After cementing himself as the Yankees' staff ace last season with a 2.98 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 10.7 K/9 over 193.1 frames, Severino entered spring training without any health concerns, but New York has nonetheless managed the 24-year-old's workload carefully. Though he'll face opposing hitters for the first time in the spring Thursday, Severino hasn't fallen behind the rest of his fellow pitchers in preparation for the season, as he's instead built up his arm through side sessions and simulated games. Expect Severino to cover only two or three innings Thursday before escalating his pitch count in his subsequent Grapefruit League outings.
Oct 20 2017Severino (arm) is the starter for Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros on Friday.Severino took a comebacker off the wrist during Saturday's Game 2 start and was removed after four innings, but should be near full health going into Friday's affair after partaking in some throwing earlier this week. The 23-year-old allowed one earned run off two hits and two walks during that Game 2 outing, and faces off against Justin Verlander once again with a trip to the World Series on the horizon for New York.
Oct 16 2017Severino (arm) is expected to pitch Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros on Friday if necessary, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.Severino was removed from his previous start after being hit on the wrist by a comebacker. While there was some initial concern regarding the injury, Severino said he felt great afterwards and ultimately wasn't sent for additional testing. He's set to play catch prior to Monday's game, and if everything checks out fine, he should be available to pitch Game 6 -- assuming the Yankees are able to extend the series.
Oct 14 2017Severino (arm) said after Saturday's game, "I feel great. I feel 100 percent great," and noted he could have kept pitching, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. It seems like the Yankees just wanted to play it safe with Severino after he was hit by a comebacker. He should still be considered day-to-day for the time being, but apparently feels 100 percent.
Oct 14 2017Severino was removed from Saturday's start after four innings after being hit on the left wrist by a comebacker, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.A Yulieski Gurriel liner hit Severino on the final play of the fourth inning and manager Joe Girardi ultimately opted to pull the young ace. Tommy Kahnle has entered the game in relief and a further update on Severino figures to be made available later Saturday.
Oct 12 2017Severino will start Game 2 of the ALCS against the Astros on Saturday.Severino will face Justin Verlander in Game 2, with Dallas Keuchel and Masahiro Tanaka toeing the rubber against one another in the opening game of the series. While the 23-year-old struggled in his first career postseason start, he was able to bounce back and earn the win in his next outing -- a seven-inning gem against the Indians in which he struck out nine and allowed three runs on four hits to keep the Yankees' season alive.
Oct 2 2017Severino will toe the rubber in Tuesday's wild-card game against the Twins, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The Yankees' ace will be opposed, unsurprisingly, by the Twins' Ervin Santana. Severino hasn't lost since Aug. 28, a span of five games, and will look to carry over his fantastic 2.98 ERA to the postseason in a one-game elimination setting.
Sep 28 2017Severino (14-6) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits and a walk through six innings Wednesday against the Rays. He struck out nine batters.Severino was filthy in this one, inducing 18 swinging strikes and tossing 66 of his 91 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old has now gone eight straight starts without allowing more than three runs, a stretch over which he's compiled an impressive 1.99 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 64:13 K:BB in 49.2 innings. After struggling to a 5.89 ERA last season, Severino has bounced back and established himself as the Yankees' ace -- and one of the better pitchers in baseball -- posting a 2.98 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 230:51 K:BB through 193.1 innings this season. Unless the Red Sox fail to clinch the division by Sunday, it looks like Severino will get the ball for the Yankees' crucial wild-card matchup against the Twins.
Sep 27 2017Severino (shoulder) will start Tuesday against the Rays.He was struck on his left (non-throwing) shoulder by a batted ball during warmups Saturday, but Severino was never believed to be in any real danger of missing this game. Severino has been excellent against the Rays in two prior starts this season -- as he has against most opponents -- allowing three runs while posting an 18:4 K:BB over 12 innings. This will likely prove to be his final start of the regular season, unless the Red Sox fail to clinch the division by Sunday.
Sep 23 2017Severino was struck on the back of the left shoulder by a batted ball during pregame warmups Saturday, David Lennon of Newsday reports, but he avoided any sort of serious injury and is being treated with ice.Severino was examined by team trainers for several minutes Saturday after being hit while playing catch in the outfield, but it seems he is only dealing with a bruise on his non-throwing arm, and not any sort of injury that will be a major concern moving forward. Severino's next start is scheduled for Tuesday against the Rays.
Sep 20 2017Severino allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three over three innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Wednesday. He wasn't at his best in this one, and manager Joe Girardi ultimately pulled Severino after just 71 pitches. The Yankees had moved Severino up a day for this start -- it was an interesting decision, as the Yankees gave up the chance to keep Minnesota from seeing Severino until a potential wild-card game for the option to start Severino three times before the end of the regular season. The 23-year-old should have an easier go of it early next week against the Rays.
Sep 19 2017Severino will start Wednesday against the Twins in place of Masahiro Tanaka, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. The Yankees were originally planning to use Tanaka in the series finale, but they decided to change course and bump Severino up, giving them the option of using Severino for three more regular-season starts if necessary. Severino will be pitching on normal rest Wednesday, and he will face a Twins lineup that -- regardless who it includes -- will contain solely players who have never faced him before.
Sep 15 2017Severino (13-6) allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven across eight innings to earn the win Friday against the Orioles.Severino gave up a two-run homer in the second inning, but the Yankees came up big on the offensive end, helping him earn his 13th victory of the season. He's allowed just three earned runs over three September starts, and he's given fantasy managers an excellent boost during the fantasy playoffs season. He'll make his next start Friday against the Blue Jays.
Sep 9 2017Severino allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out 10 over seven innings in a no-decision against the Rangers on Saturday. He was brilliant yet again, but the Yankees couldn't muster any offense until the eighth. Severino had an eight-earned-run blowup back on Aug. 12, but he's since returned to dominant form, allowing a total of 17 hits while striking out 45 in his last five starts (32.2 innings). The right-hander has already established himself as one of the game's most exciting arms at just 23 years of age.
Sep 4 2017Severino gave up one unearned run on two hits and zero walks while striking out nine in six innings Sunday against the Red Sox. He picked up his 12th win of the season. The electric righty outpitched Chris Sale in this one, and his ERA now sits at a tidy 3.03 over 169.1 innings. He ranks in the top 10 among qualified big-league starters in ERA, WHIP (1.07), FIP (3.12), K-BB% (22.5 percent) and strikeout rate (29 percent), truly establishing himself as an SP1 in fantasy. Severino threw 151.1 innings in 2016, and he is on pace to approach 190-200 innings this season, so it will be interesting to see if the Yankees tinker with the rotation down the stretch in order to preserve their ace for the postseason.
Aug 28 2017Severino (11-6) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks despite nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings Monday against Cleveland. This marks just the second time Severino has allowed more than one earned run in his past nine starts, the other being an eight-run blowup against Boston on August 12. This one could have been much worse, as Severino gave up three home runs but managed to keep the floodgates from bursting by keeping the bases clear before the big flies. Severino has been on a mighty roll since the All-Star break, and even in this modest hiccup, he induced a ludicrous 17 swinging strikes to strike out at least nine batters for the ninth time in 2017.
Aug 24 2017Severino (11-5) cruised to an easy win over the Tigers on Wednesday, allowing only one run on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out eight. The Yankees handed him a 6-0 lead by the top of the third inning, and Severino took it from there. The right-hander has now won six of his eight starts since the All-Star break, posting a 2.16 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 59:15 K:BB in 50 innings over that stretch. He'll next take the mound Monday at home against Cleveland.
Aug 17 2017Severino (10-5) allowed one unearned run and struck out nine in 6.1 inning outing during a win against the Mets on Thursday.Severino, who was coming off an eight-run disaster against the rival Red Sox, was able to bounce back against the crosstown rivals, only allowing four hits while walking three. He benefitted from keeping the ball in the zone, throwing 74 of his 106 pitches for strikes, allowing him to rack up the nine strikeouts.
Aug 12 2017Severino (9-5) was charged with 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Saturday. He struck out four.Andrew Benintendi did most of the damage, smacking a pair of three-run home runs off Severino, who saw his ERA jump more than 40 points as a result of this blowup. The 23-year-old had been pitching brilliantly leading up to this outing, allowing one run or fewer in each of his last five starts. He will look to get back on track against the Mets next week.
Aug 6 2017Severino (9-4) allowed one run on two hits and a walk over 6.2 innings during Sunday's win over the Indians. He struck out nine.Severino has been on a tear since the All-Star break and showed no signs of slowing down Sunday. His lone mistake came on a Michael Brantley homer in the first inning, but the Indians never really threatened to score after that. Following Severino's masterful outing against the reigning American League champs, the 23-year-old ace has now allowed just three earned runs while tallying 38 strikeouts in his last five starts (32.2 innings). He lines up for a matchup with the rival Red Sox on Saturday.
Jul 31 2017Severino (8-4) allowed one run on four hits and three walks over five innings in Monday's win over the Tigers. He struck out eight. The only run on Severino's ledger came on an RBI double from James McCann in the fourth. He threw just eight of 24 first-pitch strikes and labored thanks to 28 foul balls from the Tigers, culminating in his shortest start since May 19. Despite the abbreviated appearance, Severino has allowed just five runs in his previous 33 innings to lower his ERA to a sterling 2.98. There have been whispers that the 23-year-old's workload could be monitored down the stretch, but he is in form at the moment and will look to keep it going Saturday against the Indians.
Jul 26 2017Severino gave up two runs, both unearned, on three hits and two walks while striking out nine over seven innings Wednesday against the Reds to improve to 7-4 on the season. The young righty continues to roll, notching his fourth straight start of seven innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out 31 over 28 innings during that stretch. He ranks in the top 10 among qualified big-league starters in ERA (eighth), WHIP (sixth) and strikeouts (eighth), so it's hard to say he has been anything other than a true SP1 this year in mixed leagues. Severino lines up for two starts next week, first at home against the Tigers and then on the road against the Indians.
Jul 20 2017Severino (6-4) scattered eight hits and a walk across seven scoreless innings while recording six strikeouts during Thursday's win over Seattle. There are a few poor outings in the game log for Severino, but with a 3.21 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 10.1 K/9, he's establishing himself as a high-end fantasy asset. His 3.02 FIP also reinforces the lofty status. Additionally, considering how well he's pitched, there is probably positive regression ahead in the wins column. Severino projects to make his next start at home against Cincinnati.
Jul 15 2017Severino (5-4) allowed run on four hits and a pair of walks while fanning six during seven innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Saturday.Matching up with Chris Sale, the Yankees' right-hander was able to bring his best stuff to the mound and limit the Red Sox to just one run throughout the afternoon. He was particularly solid during six of his innings, but allowed two walks, an infield single and a sacrifice fly in the third, which caused his lone run to score. This marks the second straight impressive start for the 23-year-old, and he projects to start Thursday in Seattle.
Jul 8 2017Severino (5-4) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out 10 across seven innings, but didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Brewers.Severino gave up a three-run homer to Domingo Santana in the first inning and shut the Brewers down the rest of the way, and although he left the game with a deficit, the offense picked them up in the ninth-inning to save him from a potential loss. He's been very inconsistent over his last six starts, as he's put together both excellent and disappointing performances, and despite a 3.54 ERA, it's difficult to have clear expectations when he takes the mound. He'll make his next start at a time yet to be determined after the All-Star break.
Jul 2 2017Severino (5-4) was roughed up for six runs on nine hits in Sunday's loss to the Astros despite issuing only one walk along with seven strikeouts. While opposing starter Mike Fiers was able to overcome control issues by limiting hard-hit balls, Severino had the opposite problem. His nine hits and six earned runs allowed both marked new season worsts, with seven of those hits going for extra bases. Optimists will point to Severino's 19:1 K:BB ratio over the past two starts as a sign of improvement to come, while skeptics will harp on the 23-year-old's 5.92 ERA over his past four outings.
Jun 27 2017Severino (5-3) allowed one run on six hits over seven innings during Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the White Sox. He struck out 12, did not issue a walk and received a no-decision.Severino breezed through the White Sox lineup en route to a career-high 12 strikeouts. At 23 years and 127 days old, Severino became the youngest American League pitcher to record at least 12 strikeouts and zero walks since Jason Bere of the White Sox did it in 1993. It was a masterful bounce-back performance for the young righty, who had allowed nine total runs over his previous two starts against the Angels and A's. He was in line for the win but that was undone by a blown save by Dellin Betances in the ninth inning. Severino will take on the Astros in a tough road matchup Sunday.
Jun 22 2017Severino (5-3) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Angels. He allowed five earned runs over 6.0 innings, giving up eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters. He was staked to a 5-1 lead early in Thursday's matchup and was able to navigate the through the Angels' lineup reasonably well until the sixth and seventh innings. Severino allowed the first two hitters of the seventh to reach safely before the Yankees turned it over to the bullpen and allowed both Cameron Maybin and Cliff Pennington to score. He has now allowed four-or-more earned runs in back-to-back outings after having no such outing in any of his previous seven starts. Severino is lined up to face the White Sox in Chicago for his next outing.
Jun 17 2017Severino did not factor into the decision Friday against the A's, allowing four runs over six innings. He struck out six and walked four. One start after coasting against the Orioles, Severino had to battle during this one, needing 109 pitches to get through the sixth. Still, the 21-year-old has been impressive this season, possessing a 2.99 ERA in 2017 and has allowed just nine runs over his last 39.1 innings (2.06 ERA).
Jun 11 2017Severino (5-2) got the win Saturday, tossing seven innings with eight strikeouts while allowing one run on just two hits and two walks against the Orioles.Severino coasted through this one, and at just 89 pitches, he likely could've pitched even deeper but the Yankees didn't want to push their 23-year-old with an already comfortable 14-1 lead at the time. The righty has now gone five straight starts with at least seven strikeouts and allowing two or fewer runs, a stretch in which he's gone 3-0 and lowered his ERA to a team-best 2.75. He'll look to keep rolling next time out when he takes the mound in Oakland on Friday.
Jun 4 2017Severino allowed two runs on six hits and one walk in a no-decision Sunday against the Blue Jays. He struck out seven.Severino, who allowed just two men past first base through the first five innings, lost his bid for a win and a shutout on Justin Smoak's two-run home run in the sixth. He was quite efficient and needed just 98 pitches to complete seven frames, making it three straight starts that he has gone past the sixth. Severino has an excellent 22:3 K:BB over 21.1 innings in that span and will take an impressive 2.90 ERA into Saturday's matchup with the Orioles.
May 30 2017Severino (4-2) allowed one run on seven hits and one walk across 6.1 innings in Tuesday's win over the Orioles. He struck out eight.Severino was lights out for much of the night and gave up his only run as he worked out of a jam with the bases loaded in the sixth. He also displayed some of his best command of the season as he threw 73 percent of his pitches for strikes, induced 17 swinging strikes and reached eight strikeouts for the first time since May 7. Severino's latest in a string of strong outings has lowered his ERA to a sterling 2.93 and he will look to keep it rolling Sunday against the Blue Jays.
May 25 2017Severino (3-2) blanked the Royals over eight innings in Wednesday's 3-0 win, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out seven.Kansas City only managed to get one runner into scoring position all game against the 23-year-old, on a two-out double by Brandon Moss in the fifth inning. Severino continues to blossom into a staff ace for the Yankees, but will face a tough test in his next start Monday on the road against the Orioles.
May 19 2017Severino (2-2) allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings, but received no decision Friday against the Rays.Severino pitched well enough to win, as he left the game with a 2-1 lead that the bullpen blew in the late innings. He's held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in four of his last seven starts, and his 3.64 ERA along with his ability to post solid strikeout numbers have made him a strong fantasy option this year. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Royals.
May 14 2017Severino allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks over 2.1 innings Sunday against Houston. He struck out two and hit a batter in the no-decision.Severino uncharacteristically struggled with his control Sunday, setting a season high with three walks over just 2.1 innings of work. He threw just 46 of his 77 pitches for strikes, many of which were left over the heart of the plate. It was a disappointing effort, especially given the extra day of rest Severino was afforded as a result of Saturday's rainout. He'll look to get back on track when he takes the hill Friday at Tampa Bay.
May 13 2017Severino's scheduled start Saturday has been postponed, and he will start Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Yankees on Sunday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. This affords Severino an extra day of rest, but does not change the fact that he will square off against Mike Fiers and the Astros this weekend. Both teams have an off day next week, so neither rotation will need a tweak because of the doubleheader.
May 8 2017Severino allowed one run on four hits (one home run) while walking one and striking out nine over seven innings for a no-decision in Sunday's 18-inning 5-4 win over the Cubs.It was a nice bounce-back performance for Severino after he allowed five runs in 5.2 innings his last time out against the Blue Jays. The young right-hander lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.40 in the process, and he owns an impressive 45:7 K:BB in 39.2 frames over six starts. Severino is a promising young arm with plenty of upside in all fantasy formats.
May 2 2017Severino (2-2) took the loss Monday against the Blue Jays, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. He struck out three.Severino allowed a two-run homer in the second inning but settled down to cruise through the fifth. He ran into trouble in the sixth, however, and allowed a rare two-run sacrifice fly before Chris Coghlan's solo shot chased him from the game with two outs. He became a tad predictable as be pitched from behind in the count -- a result of him hitting the strike zone with just 56 percent of his pitches. Despite the rough outing, Severino still owns a respectable 3.86 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP and a strong 12.8 K/9 ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Cubs.
Apr 26 2017Severino (2-1) scattered three hits and two walks while striking out six over seven scoreless innings in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Red Sox.It's the first time this season Severino has avoided serving up a homer in a start, but the two walks actually doubled his total on the year and he now has an eye-popping 33:4 K:BB through 27 innings. He'll look to stay locked in Monday at home against the Blue Jays.
Apr 25 2017Severino won't pitch Tuesday night against the Red Sox as the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Ryan Hannable of WEEI 93.7 FM reports. To make up for Tuesday's postponement, the Yankees and Red Sox will play a doubleheader on July 16. Unless the Yankees opt to alter their rotation in the coming days, Severino's next scheduled start will be Sunday against the Orioles.
Apr 25 2017Severino will pitch Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.Severino was initially slated to start Tuesday's contest, but he'll slide back a day following Tuesday's rainout. He'll still face off with Rick Porcello, while Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia will move to Thursday and Friday, respectively.
Apr 18 2017Severino (1-1) pitched eight innings against the White Sox on Tuesday, striking out 10 while giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits. He's shown great control to open the year, as this walk-free performance leaves Severino with a spectacular 27:2 K:BB over 20 innings in his first three starts. That's a huge improvement in walk rate (not to mention a major leap in strikeouts), and if he can maintain it, Severino will end up being one of the bargains of the year on the mound. The one area of concern is the long ball -- he's given up four now, including a pair Tuesday.
Apr 14 2017Severino (1-0) got the win Thursday, allowing two runs over seven innings with 11 strikeouts against the Rays.Severino was in total control all game and actually got better the third time through the Tampa lineup, as he sent down five of his final six outs via the punchout. The 23-year-old now has a sparkling 17:2 K:BB through 12 innings and has shown some of the potential that made the Yankees call him up back in 2015 as a 21 year old. Inconsistency has plagued the righty though in his brief career, so he'll try to keep it going without taking a step back next time out Tuesday against the White Sox.
Apr 8 2017Severino took a no decision Friday, as he tossed five innings while allowing four runs and striking out six in a loss to the Orioles.Severino was done in by a three-run homer with two outs in the fifth, but even still he left the game in line for the win with the Yankees leading 5-4. With the bullpen unable to maintain the lead, the 23-year-old righty remains without a win as a starter since September of 2015 (0-8 in 13 starts in that span). He'll look to end that skid when he takes the mound next time out Wednesday against the Rays.
Mar 30 2017Severino has made the Yankees' rotation as the fourth starter, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports. The 23-year-old looks to rebound after absorbing a 5.83 ERA in 71 innings last year (22 appearances, 11 starts) that involved a demotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and a bullpen stint, where he might've figured things out (0.39 ERA, 9.6 K/9, 3.9 BB/9 in 23.1 frames). Severino's 3.95 ERA this spring was just shaky enough to have the decision come down to the wire, but the right-hander showed good command (16 strikeouts, five walks), which worked in his favor. His dazzling 2015 debut (2.89 ERA, 8.1 K/9, 3.2 BB/9 in 11 starts) keeps open the possibility of a true breakout over a full season. Upside chasers in fantasy leagues can give him another try but should handle using him cautiously out of the gate if possible.
Mar 23 2017The Yankees were hoping Severino would emerge this spring as a clear choice for the big league rotation, but so far he has failed to do so, Newsday's Anthony Rieber reports.Prospect Jordan Montgomery (3.48 ERA this spring) was recently added to the competition for the final two spots in the rotation, along with Severino, Chad Green, Bryan Mitchell, Luis Cessa and Adam Warren. Green (1.50 ERA) has been the most impressive this spring, and figures to be the favorite to open the year as the No. 4 starter. Severino is seen as the most talented of the bunch, but his 5.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 10.2 innings have him looking like a pitcher who isn't ready to turn over a big league lineup. He still has two minor league options, so the most likely scenario seems to be an assignment to Triple-A to start the season.
Feb 17 2017Severino said he has lost at least 10 pounds from his 2016 playing weight, and he has worked on mastering his changeup, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports. The organization reportedly told him to cut weight this offseason after he showed up last season looking a bit bulkier than desired. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild said "you can see" that Severino's cutter has improved, and the right-hander also needs to keep his slider shape up to par and command his fastball effectively. Severino, who turns 23 on Feb. 20, is one of at least five Yankees competing this spring for the fourth and fifth rotation spots. If he can build on the improvements he made as a reliever last year, he can erase the memories of his 5.83 season ERA. He has the elite pedigree to break through after some tweaks, making him an ideal, cheap "last year's trash" buy in fantasy drafts.
Jan 30 2017Severino will remain a starting pitcher after being demoted to the bullpen late last season, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports.Severino struggled as a starter in a rocky rookie campaign, going 1-8 with an 7.98 ERA over 11 starts. After being demoted to the bullpen, however, the right-hander posted a dominant 1.13 ERA in 16 innings. Nonetheless, GM Brian Cashman reasserted his faith in the youngster by saying that even if Severino does not make the rotation out of spring training, he will return to the minors as a starter.
Oct 2 2016Severino didn't factor into the decision against the Orioles on Saturday, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. The right-hander was touched up by Manny Machado for a solo shot in the third, which was preceded by a Michael Bourn two-RBI single in the second. Severino's up-and-down sophomore campaign saw him regress in virtually every category and he wraps up 2016 with an unsightly 3-8 record and 5.83 ERA.
Sep 30 2016Severino will start Saturday against the Orioles, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. With Masahiro Tanaka (forearm) shut down, Severino will be afforded one final starting opportunity before the end of the 2016 campaign. Severino was on a 50-pitch limit in his last start Monday but he only threw 34 pitches before being ejected from the game. He figures to be on a limited pitch count again Saturday.
Sep 26 2016Severino was ejected in the second inning, < a href="https://twitter.com/eboland11/status/780553575927808000">Erik Boland of Newsday reports.Severino completed just one innings and allowed a run on a hit and two walks. He hit a batter to open the second inning and was ejected by home plate umpire Todd Tichenor. Severino was already at 34 pitches and was on a 50-pitch limit. His season is likely over, but we'll have to wait and see if further discipline comes from the Commissioner's office. If he gets suspended, it put Severino's chance of grabbing a roster spot next spring in jeopardy.
Sep 26 2016Severino will be limited to 50 pitches Monday night, Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York reports.Severino hasn't started a game since August 14 and hasn't thrown more than 2.1 innings in his two appearance since returning from Triple-A this month. Expect him to throw three innings at most Monday night.
Sep 25 2016Severino will start Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.Severino tossed two innings of relief Thursday against the Rays and hasn't started a game since Aug. 14, so don't be surprised if he's held some sort of pitch count for Monday's outing. The youngster has been sensational since converting to a relief role, but his 8.58 ERA over nine starts this season make him an untrustworthy streaming option against the powerful Blue Jays offense.
Sep 12 2016Severino tossed 2.1 scoreless innings Sunday, striking out three in the loss to the Rays.Severino has been a changed pitcher since making the move to the bullpen after his September call up. In four outings, the 22-year-old has gone 8.1 innings with nine strikeouts, yielding just three hits and no runs. The long relief role likely won't provide much help to prospective fantasy owners, but it could be an encouraging sign that Severino has regained his confidence moving into next season, when he could have a chance again to work his way back into the rotation.
Sep 5 2016Severino walked two and struck out two over two scoreless innings to get credited with his second win of the season in Sunday's victory over the Orioles. While it's nice to see him pitching well for a change, the relief outing makes it clear that the Yankees are not considering Severino as a rotation option in place of Chad Green (elbow). Expect Severino to remain in the bullpen for the rest of the season.
Sep 2 2016Severino was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes/Barre on Friday. The 22-year-old hasn't looked anything like the pitcher we saw last year, struggling to a 1-8 record and 7.19 ERA in 12 appearances (nine starts) between a DL stint and several stints in the minor leagues. He could end up making some starts in September, but with Luis Cessa and Chad Green faring reasonably well of late, Severino may be relegated to a multi-inning role out of the bullpen for the time being.
Aug 30 2016Severino was scratched from his scheduled start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday but not due to injury, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.Severino ended up coming on in relief, firing a pair of scoreless innings with four strikeouts, thus doing away with any lingering doubt as to his health. It seems the Yankees simply wanted to be sure Severino is well rested and available when he returns to the major leagues later this week. His September role is still TBD but Severino may work primarily out of the bullpen with the potential for a few spot starts.
Aug 12 2016Severino, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, said he believes he will start Sunday against the Rays, Wallace Matthews of ESPN.com reports. Two days after being sent down, Severino is back on the Yankees' active roster replacing Nathan Eovaldi (elbow). Chad Green would also be an option for Sunday, but the Yankees need a starter for Monday as well and Green figures to take that turn on one additional day's rest. Severino struggled Tuesday at Boston, giving up five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings, but he was excellent in his first appearance of August and it sounds like he will face a relatively soft landing in the Rays in his return to the rotation.
Aug 12 2016The Yankees have recalled Severino from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.Severino gets the call as the Yankees put Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury. Severino is expected to start Tuesday as the Yankees host the Blue Jays. On the season with New York, Severino has a 6.42 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. Severino has started eight games in 11 appearances with the Yankees this season.
Aug 10 2016Severino was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, Newsday's Erik Boland reports. After a dominant relief appearance against the Mets last week, Severino was thrust back into the Yankees' rotation, but the matchup at Boston proved too difficult for the 22-year-old right-hander. He gave up five runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings Tuesday, pushing his ERA on the year to 6.42, and the Yankees have evidently made the decision to turn back to Chad Green to fill a rotation spot. It's uncertain what role Severino will fill upon his eventual return this year, but there's little doubt he will compete for a starting job in spring training.
Aug 9 2016Severino (1-7) lasted just 4.1 innings against the Red Sox on Tuesday, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and taking the loss.Tuesday marked Severino's return to the rotation after losing his starting spot and being demoted to Triple-A Durham following a poor start to the season. Severino pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief last Wednesday, but unfortunately Tuesday looked more like the seven starts that got him sent down. The outing raises Severino's ERA to a bloated 6.48, and he has a 1.48 WHIP.
Aug 4 2016Severino seems like a logical candidate to join the Yankees' rotation with Chad Green optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.The Yankees seemed intent on keeping Severino in the bullpen for the time being, but the 22-year-old may very well have forced their hand with his outstanding performance in relief of Green on Wednesday. Severino allowed just one unearned run on one hit, walking one batter and striking out five, over 4.1 innings Wednesday (60 pitches). When asked about the possibility of Severino rejoining the rotation after the game, manager Joe Girardi told Newsday, "Obviously that's going to be talked about a lot. He looked really good tonight." Severino would be in line for a two-step right away if he were to get the call to the rotation, with matchups at Boston and against Tampa Bay.
Aug 4 2016Severino will slide back into the rotation, getting the start Tuesday against the Red Sox, Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal reports.Severino came in for a lengthy relief role against the Mets on Thursday, and allowed just one unearned run on one hit during 4.1 innings of work. The 22-year-old struck out five batters and walked just one, and appears to have gotten his original spot back in the rotation that he occupied at the beginning of the season. Severino recently came back to the Yankees after spending some time with Triple-A Durham, posting a 7-1 record with a 3.11 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP over the course of 11 starts. He will face a strong Boston lineup Tuesday, and is in line to face Tampa Bay the following Sunday.
Aug 3 2016Severino (1-6) worked 4.1 innings of one-hit relief, allowing one walk and an unearned run while striking out five and earning the win Wednesday against the Mets. The young fireballer's been a new man since getting moved to the bullpen, having pitched 8.1 innings with zero earned runs, one hit and a 10:3 K:BB. Severino impressed after his call-up last year, but has been alternately ineffective (6.02 ERA even after Wednesday) and injured at the MLB level this season. The 22-year-old's been better in Triple-A, though, with a 3.25 ERA. It doesn't seem like he's primed to offer much fantasy value down the stretch because he's in the bullpen and not in the mix for holds or saves, but Severino's showing positive signs that should ensure fantasy owners remember his name for next year.
Aug 3 2016Severino will remain in the bullpen for the time being despite the Yankees' trade of Ivan Nova on Monday, the Westchester Journal News reports.Chad Green is replacing Nova in the Yankees' rotation, while Severino is a candidate to continue being used as a multi-inning reliever. In a pair of two-inning outs since being recalled from Triple-A, Severino has fanned five and walked two without allowing a hit or a run.
Jul 25 2016Severino, who was recalled by the Yankees on Monday, will pitch out of the bullpen, MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reports. With Aroldis Chapman getting dealt to the Cubs on Monday, the Yankees could use another shutdown reliever, and Severino should fit the bill. He posted a 3.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 57 strikeouts in 63.2 innings at Triple-A after getting bumped from the big league rotation earlier in the year, and his stuff should really play up in short bursts out of the bullpen. Of course, he could be transitioned back to the rotation if the Yankees have a need, but for now it seems he will only reliably provide fantasy owners with strikeouts and ratios.
Jul 25 2016Severino was recalled from Triple-A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Monday, Shane Hennigan of the Scranton Times-Tribune reports.Severino struggled in seven starts for the Yankees earlier in the season, amassing an ugly 7.46 ERA and 1.69 WHIP across 35.0 cumulative innings. The 22-year-old has turned things around at Triple-A, however, posting a 3.25 ERA and 7-1 record in 10 starts. It's unclear exactly how the Yankees will use Severino, but it appears as though he'll be utilized in a relief role, initially.
Jul 14 2016Severino will not rejoin the big league club "unless the need arises," according to GM Brian Cashman, the New York Post reports.Severino has fared much better in the minors this season, where he's gone 5-1 with a 3.18 ERA as compared to an 0-6, 7.46 ERA mark over seven major league starts. Despite the improvement since being demoted, it appears as though there are no imminent plans to give the 22-year-old another chance just yet. He'll likely be high on the list though should the Yankees find themselves in need of an injury replacement or a spot start candidate.
May 30 2016The Yankees activated Severino (triceps) from the disabled list Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.Severino has recovered from the triceps injury that landed him on the disabled list, but he got off to a rough start this season and the Yankees want him to work through things at the minor-league level for the time being. He did post a 2.89 ERA in 11 starts with the big league club last season and is one of the team's top young pitchers, so there is a good chance he returns to New York once he has thins ironed out.
May 26 2016Severino (triceps) might be used as a sixth starter when he's healthy enough to return, the New York Daily News reports. The Yankees rotation has pitched well in his absence and the 22-year-old struggled mightily when healthy (0-6, 7.46 ERA) that it's left some speculation about his role when he comes back. The club is entering a long stretch without a day off, so a six-man rotation could be deployed one or two times through, but it remains to be seen what the plan will be going forward.
May 25 2016Severino (triceps) will make his first rehab start Saturday for High-A Tampa, the Associated Press reports. The Yankees rested Severino for about two weeks after he was diagnosed with a mild triceps strain, but he's apparently shown enough improvement with his condition to test out his arm. Given that Severino was sporting a 7.46 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over his first seven starts, the Yankees may want the 22-year-old to complete a couple of rehab outings before returning from the DL. It's not guaranteed he'll take back a spot in the rotation from Ivan Nova or CC Sabathia once he's activated.
May 22 2016Serverino (triceps) is expected to make a rehab start on Sunday, Yankees' clubhouse reporter Meredith Marakovits reports.Severino has been playing catch and throwing on flat ground after he was diagnosed with a mild triceps strain earlier in May. If all goes well in the start, the 22-year-old could be in line to return to the Yankees' lineup in the not-too-distant future.
May 13 2016Severino exited Friday's matchup with the White Sox early with an apparent injury, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Severino was noticeably uncomfortable while on the mound. He through 81 pitches over 2.2 innings, and surrendered seven earned runs in the process. He was checked on by a trainer prior to leaving the game. Expect an update on his status when more information becomes available.
May 13 2016Severino is headed to the 15-day DL after being diagnosed with a mild right triceps strain, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. For now, no structural damage has been reported for Severino after the Yankees had him undergo an MRI on Friday night. He won't pick up a baseball for the next five-to-seven days, and figures to be evaluated again prior to resuming throwing. The Yankees have not announced a replacement for him in the rotation, but it seems likely that he'll miss at least three turns in the rotation.
May 13 2016Severino was sent for an MRI on his right elbow after leaving his start Friday night during the third inning due to injury.Prior to his departure, Severino was ineffective to the tune of allowing seven runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings. He also walked four and hit a batter, throwing 46 of his 81 pitches for strikes. Once the results of the MRI are made public, a timetable for his return to the mound should become clear, but his chances of making his next scheduled start are questionable at best.
May 8 2016Severino struck out a season-high nine batters and walked one while allowing four runs over 6.2 innings in Sunday's loss to the Red Sox.Severino's strikeout pitches were working despite his throwing just 60 percent of his pitches for strikes, but he fell victim to a trio of homers that accounted for the entirety of the damage done against him. On the positive side, he went deeper into Sunday's start than he had been in any other outing this season, and he maintains an impressive 1.7 BB/9 through 32.1 innings. If he can limit the home runs, Severino should fare better in Friday's start versus the White Sox.
May 28 2015Severino was promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Baseball America's Josh Norris reports. He tossed five no-hit innings in his last start at Double-A on Thursday, and will now be one step closer to getting called up to The Show. There are some who think Severino profiles as a reliever long-term, based on his unorthodox delivery and questions about his ability to hold up over a full season, but the Yankees will certainly continue to develop him as a starter until Severino's results dictate a change. The 21-year-old righty has shot through the Yankees' system over the past year, and has notched close to a 5:1 K:BB ratio at every stop along the way. He is likely already owned in all dynasty leagues, but now is the time for those in single season leagues to start to pay attention.
May 23 2015Severino (finger) tossed five no-hit innings Thursday in his return from a brief stint on the disabled list at Double-A Trenton. The blister issue obviously was minor, as Severino breezed through his first start in 11 days. Currently, the 21-year-old has a 3.27 ERA and 39:8 K:BB through 33 innings.
May 21 2015Severino (finger) was activated off the DL and will start Thursday for Double-A Trenton, Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com reports.Severino landed on the 7-day DL last week with a blister on his right middle finger, but it appears to have been just a minor issue. The highly touted prospect sports a 3.86 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 28 innings with Trenton this season.
May 12 2015Severino was placed on the 7-day DL Tuesday with a blister on his right middle finger, MLB.com's Matt Kardos reports. He was forced to exit his last start Sunday after just two innings due to the blister. Severino is the Yankees' top pitching prospect, and a top-50 overall prospect in dynasty leagues. Fortunately the injury sounds minor and he should be back on the mound in the relatively near future.
Mar 9 2015Severino has been diagnosed with strep throat, Newsday's Erik Boland reports. He went to the hospital for tests Monday morning and following this diagnosis he will likely be away from the team for at least a few days.
Sep 6 2014Severino completed his bust-out year with a 2.79 ERA and 127:27 K:BB in 113.1 innings across Low-A, High-A and Double-A.Those are astounding numbers, especially when you consider Severino went 2.52 with 29:6 K:BB in 25 innings at Double-A. Nothing slowed him down this year, so look for him to arrive sometime next year like a freight train.
