Jun 26 2025Gray (wrist) threw a bullpen session Wednesday prior to the Rangers' game against the Orioles at Camden Yards, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray threw his second bullpen session within the last week and third overall. He'll get one or two more before the Rangers engage in discussions about the right-hander's next steps.
Jun 21 2025Gray (wrist) threw a bullpen session of roughly 35 pitches Friday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray is targeting a late-July return, and he's been making significant progress recently in his recovery from a right wrist injury. He threw around 35 pitches against ghost hitters, likely meaning he's throwing his full pitch mix. He was limited to throwing fastballs in his June 13 bullpen session.
Jun 18 2025Gray (wrist) could be ready to make his season debut by late July, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray resumed throwing off a mound last week as he works his way back from a fractured right wrist he suffered in mid-March. Presumably, the right-hander will come back as a starter for the Rangers, but there was some talk during spring training about moving him to the bullpen, so his role could depend on the team's needs at that time.
Jun 13 2025Gray (wrist) threw off a mound Thursday and will do so again Sunday, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray threw 20 fastballs Thursday. It was his first mound work since suffering a broken wrist in March. Gray is aiming for a return in late July after the All-Star break.
May 1 2025Gray (wrist) has been cleared to do some light throwing next week, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray received clearance after getting good results from an X-ray earlier this week. It will be a slow and steady progression for the right-hander as he works his way back from a fractured right wrist. Gray doesn't have a timetable, but a return before the All-Star break seems unlikely.
Apr 16 2025Gray (wrist) had his hard cast taken off Tuesday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray suffered a fractured wrist during spring training after being struck by a 106-mph line drive, but he seems to be recovering well. The 33-year-old righty expects to start up a throwing program within the next several weeks, at which point a return timeline may begin to emerge.
Mar 18 2025The Rangers placed Gray (wrist) on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Patrick Corbin, who was inked to a one-year contract Tuesday. Gray now won't be eligible to make his season debut until late May as he recovers from a fractured right wrist.
Mar 15 2025Manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that Gray (wrist) will miss "extended time," Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Early estimates have Gray sitting out roughly six weeks with a fractured right wrist, though nothing is set in stone at this point. While he's out, Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter should both have a decent shot at making the Rangers' Opening Day rotation.
Mar 14 2025Gray was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist after getting hit by a comebacker during Friday's Cactus League game versus Colorado, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray took a 106.4-mph line drive off his wrist in the fourth inning of Friday's contest and was promptly removed from the game. Manager Bruce Bochy didn't provide an estimate for when the 33-year-old righty might return, but the injury will certainly delay his 2025 debut by a significant amount of time. With both Gray and Cody Bradford (elbow), set to miss Opening Day, there's a good chance that Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter will both be part of Texas' initial rotation.
Mar 13 2025Gray has made two starts this spring, tossing five scoreless innings with a 3:0 K:BB. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There were reports earlier in the offseason that the Rangers might consider using Gray as a reliever and potentially, a closer. However, while it's possible the team might revisit the idea down the line, it fully intends to open the season with Gray as a member of its rotation. Gray posted a 4.47 ERA and 86:28 K:BB over 102.2 innings covering 19 starts and four relief appearances in 2024.
Mar 3 2025Gray allowed four hits and struck out two over three scoreless innings in Sunday's spring start against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray worked around two hits in each of the first two innings before retiring the side in order in his final frame. The right-hander threw 40 pitches (29 for strikes). He also worked on mechanical issues during his second Cactus League start after experiencing a drop in velocity his first time out. As Gray described it to Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News following Sunday's outing, he was standing "tall" on the mound, which means he kept his right leg straight instead of it buckling as he pushed forward to deliver the ball. Gray's fastball averaged 93.7 mph during his first start; it averaged 94.4 on Sunday.
Feb 25 2025Gray threw two scoreless innings, striking out one in Monday's Cactus League game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas plated nine runs in the top of the first, making it a pressure-free day for Gray, who set down all six batters faced. He threw mostly fastballs and sliders among his 26 pitches while mixing in one curveball, a pitch he threw just 74 times in 2024. He told MLB.com that he's working on throwing the curve for strikes so that it can be a useful pitch instead of having batters lay off it and wait for a fastball.
Feb 16 2025Texas manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that the team is thinking of Gray as a starter, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Recent rumors and reports suggested the Rangers are considering using Gray as a closer. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray confirmed that he hasn't been approached by anyone in the organization about the possibility of being a closer or reliever, although the pitcher said he'd do whatever is best for the club. "[Gray closing], it's not in our focus right now," Bochy said. "During the season, as always, you make adjustments. I'm not saying that we plan on doing it, but you've got to figure ways to make a team better." The 33-year-old right-hander, who spent three separate occasions on the injured list in 2024, was good out of the bullpen in a small sample size. Gray allowed one run across 5.2 relief innings against the Astros and Diamondbacks on the way to Texas winning the World Series in 2023.
Feb 13 2025Gray (foot) completed his first bullpen session of spring training Thursday, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray finished last season on the injured list while dealing with a neuroma in his foot, but he seemingly had a normal offseason and doesn't appear to be facing any restrictions during the spring. Rather than his health, Gray's role heading into 2025 is the bigger question mark during camp. Neither manager Bruce Bochy nor general manager Chris Young have confirmed that Gray will be locked into an Opening Day rotation spot, and Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reported earlier this week that the organization has had internal discussions about using the hard-throwing right-hander as a closer. The back end of the Texas bullpen is currently unsettled, as the Rangers let three key late-inning relievers (Kirby Yates, David Robertson and Jose Leclerc) walk in free agency this winter and lack an obvious ninth-inning solution on the roster.
Feb 10 2025The Rangers have had internal discussions about the possibility of using Gray as their closer, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray said in January that he would be open to the idea of closing if the team asked him to, and it appears it is indeed a possibility. However, Grant writes that, as things stand right now, the innings Gray can provide in the rotation "seem the higher priority." Texas' closer job appears wide open, but it's a situation which could gain further clarity during spring training.
Jan 24 2025Gray would be open to serving as the Rangers' closer, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The club has a clear opening at closer, but there's been no indication that Gray might be under consideration for the role. However, a shift to the back end of the bullpen could make some sense for the veteran righty, who has had durability issues. Gray has made seven relief appearances for Texas between the 2023 postseason and 2024 regular season, and in those outings he posted a 1.42 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 18:3 K:BB over 12.2 innings. Of course, the Rangers could also continue deploying him as a starting pitcher, as Nathan Eovaldi might qualify as the only safe bet in the rotation. Gray had surgery in September to address a nerve issue in his right foot but is expected to be ready for spring training.
Sep 4 2024The Rangers transferred Gray (foot) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was ruled out for the season once he initially landed on the injured list Tuesday due to neuroma in his foot, and moving to the 60-day IL will officially put an early end to his year. Sandro Fabian was selected from Triple-A Round Rock to take Gray's place on the 40-man roster.
Sep 3 2024The Rangers placed Gray (foot) on the 15-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Neuroma in Gray's foot will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season. He'll finish the 2024 campaign with a 4.47 ERA and 1.31 WHIP alongside an 86:28 K:BB across 102.2 innings.
Aug 30 2024Gray (5-6) took the loss Friday against Oakland, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Texas right-hander made his second consecutive poor start, as he has allowed 11 runs over 6.2 innings since re-joining the rotation Aug. 24. Gray looked shaky from the get-go, allowing a solo homer to Brent Rooker in the first before yielding a three-run long ball to JJ Bleday in the third. Gray has struggled mightily in the second half, pitching to a 6.75 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB across 17.1 innings while bouncing between the rotation and bullpen with an IL stint mixed in. He tentatively lines up to make his next start against the Angels at home.
Aug 24 2024Gray (5-5) allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out one over two-plus innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray worked out of the bullpen Tuesday versus the Pirates, pitching two innings in that appearance. He was able to stretch out to 53 pitches (36 strikes) in Saturday's start, but he was not very effective and exited after giving up a three-run home to Jhonkensy Noel in the third inning. Gray missed nearly a month due to a groin injury, and he's still likely to be on a pitch count for the next one or two starts at a minimum. For the season, he's posted a 4.22 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 81:26 K:BB through 98 innings across 22 appearances (18 starts). Gray's next outing is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Athletics.
Aug 21 2024The Rangers list Gray as their scheduled starter for Saturday's game in Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray returned from the injured list Tuesday after missing nearly a month with a groin strain, but because he didn't go out on a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand and wasn't fully stretched out, the Rangers opted to bring him back in a relief role. After Gray tossed two innings and 27 pitches out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 4-0 loss to the Pirates, the Rangers are ready to welcome him back in the rotation this weekend, though he could be on a somewhat limited pitch count. Gray will be taking over the rotation spot that had previously belonged to Tyler Mahle (shoulder), who was placed on the IL on Tuesday.
Aug 20 2024The Rangers reinstated Gray (groin) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Tyler Mahle (shoulder) headed for the injured list, Gray will come off the IL to claim the open roster spot, and he'll presumably also fill the hole in the Rangers' rotation. However, the 32-year-old righty didn't head out on a rehab assignment before being reinstated, so there's also a chance he works out of the bullpen until he's able to build up to a starter's workload.
Aug 17 2024Manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that Gray (groin) won't require a minor-league rehab assignment, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray has been on the shelf since July 29 and began throwing off a mound earlier this week. While he seemingly has a ways to go before being fully stretched out, the Rangers are opting to keep Gray with the team instead of sending him out on a rehab assignment. According to Wilson, Gray speculated that he could pitch out of the bullpen for the Rangers during a three-game series against the Pirates that begins Monday. Though a Monday return may be ambitious, a temporary move to the bullpen could be part of Gray's ramp-up period before rejoining the rotation.
Aug 14 2024Gray (groin) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray has been out of action since late July due to a right groin strain, and Wednesday appears to be the first time he's thrown a bullpen session since suffering the injury. The 32-year-old will require time to build back up to a starter's workload during either simulated games or a rehab assignment, so he figures to still be a few weeks away from activation.
Jul 29 2024Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that Gray (groin) could miss up to a month of action, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray tweaked his groin during warmups and had to be scratched from Sunday's scheduled start versus the Blue Jays before officially landing on the 15-day injured list Monday. It's not clear what grade the strain is, but it's evidently bad enough that the Rangers aren't expecting him back for several weeks. Dane Dunning, Jose Urena and Cody Bradford are options to fill Gray's rotation spot for now, but the Rangers are expected to get Tyler Mahle (elbow) back soon and Jacob deGrom (elbow) hopefully not long after that.
Jul 28 2024Gray was diagnosed with right groin discomfort after being removed from Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander never actually threw a pitch in the contest since he suffered the injury while warming up for the opening inning. The severity of the injury is unclear, though it's an encouraging development that he's not dealing with an arm injury.
Jul 24 2024Gray (5-4) picked up the win Tuesday against the White Sox, allowing one run on four hits and no walks across 7.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray finished off Tuesday's start by retiring 15 consecutive batters and pitched into the eighth inning on 80 pitches before being pulled. The outing marked Gray's first time exceeding six innings pitched since May 15. While he hasn't been a great source of strikeouts, notching 78 Ks in 94 innings, the veteran righty has been a reliable option, owning a 3.73 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. He's on track to close out a two-start week Sunday in Toronto.
Jul 8 2024Gray (4-4) earned the win over the Angels on Monday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray wasn't overpowering with just six whiffs and two punchouts, but he got seven runs of support through four frames and stuck around long enough to pick up the win. The veteran right-hander didn't provide much length, though, and he's pitched more than five innings only once in his past eight starts. Gray has also been tepid in the strikeout department this season -- his 7.7 K/9 is on pace for his lowest career mark with the exception of the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
Jul 3 2024Gray allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two over four-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up a two-run home run to Manny Machado in the third inning and labored again early in the fifth. This was the fourth time in Gray's last six appearances that he failed to complete five innings, though two of those short outings were by design following his return from a groin injury. The right-hander is now at a 3.92 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 71:22 K:BB over 80.1 innings across 17 appearances (15 starts) this year. Gray is lined up to make his next start in a favorable road matchup versus the Angels.
Jun 27 2024Gray (3-4) took the loss against the Orioles on Thursday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out one batter over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray fell behind 3-0 after one inning and 6-0 after three, and by the time he exited after five frames Texas was down 8-1. The right hander notched just two whiffs among his 73 pitches and recorded a season-low one punchout. Gray pitched well in registering six scoreless innings his previous time on the mound, but he surrendered nine runs over three frames in his previous start, so he's difficult for fantasy managers to gauge right now. His ERA on the season is still a respectable 3.77, but for context, it was at 2.21 coming into June.
Jun 23 2024Gray (3-3) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two hits over six scoreless innings in a 6-0 victory over the Royals. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both hits were third-inning singles, but Gray shut down the rally and proceeded to retire the final 10 batters he faced before exiting. The right-hander tossed 72 pitches (51 strikes) en route to his sixth quality start of the season, but Saturday marked the first time he'd lasted at least six innings in a start since May 15. Gray will take a 3.03 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 68:19 K:BB through 71.1 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next weekend in Baltimore.
Jun 21 2024Gray will start Saturday's game against the Royals, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was scheduled to throw Monday at Milwaukee on seven days rest, but he'll have his start bumped up to Saturday to give Max Scherzer (thumb/back) extra rest. Gray had surrendered two or fewer runs 12 consecutive starts before being rocked for nine runs in three innings against the Mets on Monday. He yielded two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts across seven innings in a start against the Royals on May 5.
Jun 17 2024Gray (2-3) allowed nine runs on 11 hits in three-plus innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray never found his footing Monday and the Mets took advantage. Most of the damage came during a six-run second inning and his night was finished after allowing a two-run shot to Brandon Nimmo in the fourth. Gray had allowed nine earned runs over his previous 50 innings before Monday's brutal outing. His season ERA shot up from 2.17 to 3.31 as a result. Gray's next outing is projected to be in Milwaukee.
Jun 12 2024Gray allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out three over three innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was pitching on short rest after he made a relief appearance versus the Giants on Saturday, so it's not surprising this was a short outing for the veteran. He threw 36 of 65 pitches for strikes, and the lone run on his line was a Shohei Ohtani solo home run in the first inning. Gray is now at a 2.17 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 63:19 K:BB over 62.1 innings through 13 appearances (11 starts) this season. The right-hander should be getting back on a normal schedule moving forward, which puts him tentatively on track to make his next start in a favorable home matchup versus the Mets.
Jun 8 2024Gray allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over 2.1 scoreless innings in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray appeared in relief of Andrew Heaney on Saturday in the former's first appearance since May 21, after he was placed on the IL with a groin strain. The right-hander certainly looked healthy, as he struck out four of the nine batters he faced. Overall, Gray is 2-2 with a 2.12 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 60:18 K:BB across 59.1 innings this year. He's currently scheduled to rejoin the rotation next week on the road versus the Dodgers.
Jun 4 2024Gray (groin) threw 40-to-50 pitches during a bullpen session Monday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reported Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray will throw another bullpen session Wednesday, and if all goes well, manager Bruce Bochy said the right-hander could be an option to return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday versus the Giants, per Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News. Once Gray is reinstated, Jose Urena will likely be pushed out of the rotation.
Jun 3 2024Gray (groin) is scheduled to face live hitters Monday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A clearer indication of when Gray could return from the 15-day injured list should emerge following Monday's session. At the time of his placement on the IL, the right-hander wasn't expected to miss much more than the minimum 15 days. Per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, Gray could be an option to rejoin the Texas rotation as soon as Friday versus the Giants if Monday's live session goes off without a hitch.
May 23 2024The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to May 22, with a right groin strain, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray suffered the injury in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies, and an MRI revealed a mild strain. He would seem to have a good chance at returning from the IL when his 15 days are up or shortly thereafter, but it will depend on how he recovers over the next several days. Gray had been slated to start Sunday in Minnesota, but it's possible Nathan Eovaldi (groin) will be ready to return that day.
May 22 2024Gray (groin) will undergo an MRI after being removed from Tuesday's start, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was feeling tightness in his right groin and was removed after 75 pitches and five innings. The right-hander doesn't believe the injury is serious and intends to make his next start.
May 21 2024Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Gray was removed from his start against the Phillies due to right groin tightness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was able to get through five innings before exiting his start, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters. Bochy didn't specify how severe Gray's injury is, so it remains unclear if the right-hander is at risk of missing his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday in Minnesota.
May 15 2024Gray (2-1) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three over 6.1 shutout innings to earn the win Wednesday versus the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray has strung together four straight quality starts after posting just one over his first six outings this season. During his hot streak, the right-hander has allowed just four runs while posting a 20:3 K:BB over 27.1 innings. Gray is at a 2.08 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 52:14 K:BB through 52 innings across 10 appearances (nine starts) in 2024. He'll look to keep it up in his next start, tentatively projected to come on the road against the Phillies.
May 10 2024Gray did not factor into the decision Friday against the Rockies, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray collected a quality start in his first return to Coors Field since departing Colorado in free agency after the 2021 season. The Texas right-hander racked up his third consecutive quality start, firing a 1.71 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB in 21 innings over that span. Gray is slated to make his next start at home against Cleveland.
May 5 2024Gray pitched seven innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Royals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was tagged early Sunday, giving up a run in the first inning and then another in the bottom of the third frame on an RBI double by Vinnie Pasquantino. He finished his outing with four scoreless frames, securing his second straight quality start. Gray now owns a 2.50 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 42 strikeouts over 39.2 innings in eight starts this season, and he's tentatively set to return to the mound Saturday against the Rockies for a road matchup against his former team.
May 1 2024Gray (1-1) earned the win in Tuesday's 7-1 victory over Washington after allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out three batters across eight innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up an RBI single to Luis Garcia in the first inning to put the Rangers behind early, but that would end up being the only blemish on his record. His three strikeouts weren't consistent with the rates fantasy managers have come to expect out of the 32-year-old righty, but he still managed to completely shut down the Nationals' bats nonetheless. Ever since being lit up for five runs in 3.2 innings during his season debut in March, Gray has posted a 1.24 ERA alongside a 33:8 K:BB across 29 innings. He'll look to extend his hot streak during his next start -- tentatively scheduled to come in Kansas City on Sunday.
Apr 24 2024Gray allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Seattle on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray pitched well as a starter four days after making a surprise 1.2-inning relief appearance against Atlanta, but he was pulled with two runners on base and two outs in the fifth after having thrown 92 pitches. Texas was up 2-1 at the time, so the ill-timed hook cost him a chance at earning his first win of 2024. Nonetheless, this was another positive outing for the right-hander, who has now given up one or fewer earned runs in each of his past five trips to the mound (including the relief outing).
Apr 21 2024Gray struck out four over 1.2 scoreless relief innings in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As the Rangers approached the end of the stretch that includes 17 games in 17 days, manager Bruce Bochy made note of the team's thin bullpen and a possible surprise entering Saturday's game, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. That surprise turned out to be Gray, a starter, pitching in relief. Gray is slated to start Tuesday, and Saturday lined up to be his in-between starts side session.
Apr 16 2024Gray didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Tigers after he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander recorded 17 swinging strikes on 97 pitches as he delivered his first quality start of the campaign. Gray lasted just 7.1 frames and allowed seven runs (five earned) in his first two outings, but he's pitched well in his past two starts with a 1.64 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB over 11 innings. He's still in search of his first win of the year and tentatively lines up for a home matchup with the Mariners early next week.
Apr 11 2024Gray (0-1) took the loss against Oakland on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray yielded seven runs (five earned) over 7.1 innings across his first two starts of the campaign but managed to emerge without a loss on his record. Naturally, he took defeat for the first time Thursday in what was easily his best outing of the season, as he gave up just one run (on a Seth Brown solo homer) and punched out a campaign-high nine batters while inducing 13 swinging strikes. The outing at least gave Gray's fantasy managers a reason to hope for better days moving forward after his poor initial pair of starts, and he'll look to build on Thursday's performance in his next outing, which projects to be another good matchup versus Detroit next week.
Apr 6 2024Gray took a no-decision Saturday, yielding two unearned runs on five hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Corey Seager fielding error meant Gray's ERA went down after this one, but he labored through the night, needing a whopping 84 pitches to cover his 3.2 frames. It's the second straight clunker to begin the season for Gray, who has recorded just 11 outs in both outings. The Rangers' bullpen picked Gray up Saturday, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings while the offense came alive late to secure a victory.
Mar 31 2024Gray tossed 3.2 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out two batters in Sunday's 9-5 loss to the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray made his return to the mound after missing his final outing of the spring with a stiff neck, struggling to find any groove against Chicago. The right-hander gave up a three-run homer to Christopher Morel in the first inning, failing to get off to a good start. He later allowed three straight batters to reach base in the fourth inning, giving up two more runs and ultimately exiting the game with two outs in the frame. Gray will look to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively set to be Saturday at home versus the Astros.
Mar 28 2024Gray (neck) will start Sunday's game against the Cubs, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray failed to make his last start of the exhibition campaign due to a stiff neck, but the issue won't cost him any time to begin the regular season. He threw five innings March 14, so while his workload may be monitored, he shouldn't have significant limitations in his season debut Sunday.
Mar 26 2024Gray didn't pitch as scheduled Tuesday due to a stiff neck, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray will throw a bullpen session Wednesday instead, and his neck shouldn't cause his regular-season debut to be delayed. The 32-year-old righty had a great spring, throwing eight scoreless innings over two games while striking out seven batters and walking two.
Mar 15 2024Gray allowed three hits and struck out three over five scoreless innings in Thursday's spring start against Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray is healthy and was locked in for a second straight Cactus League start. Needing to get his pitch count up, Gray threw additional pitches in the bullpen after he was removed. He's yet to give up a run over eight innings in his two starts. The only run allowed this spring was in an intrasquad game, when Evan Carter took Gray deep.
Mar 3 2024Gray allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four over three scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray made his Cactus League debut after throwing two innings in an intrasquad game earlier in the week. He breezed through the first two innings, retiring all six batters faced, before pitching into a jam in the third. The right-hander managed to extricate himself from the one-out, bases-loaded situation. Gray told Matthew Postins of SI.com that he ran into trouble with the pitch clock, which contributed to the jam. He also noted the forearm issues that forced him to the injured list late last season are in the past. Gray engaged in an offseason workout program designed to strengthen his arm.
Feb 27 2024Gray threw two innings in an intrasquad game Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray is set to occupy a spot on the rotation while the Rangers cope with injuries to Jacob deGrom (elbow), Tyler Mahle (elbow) and Max Scherzer (back). The 32-year-old Gray sparkled in the first half of 2023 but became inconsistent and eventually landed on the injured list with forearm tightness. His plan during the offseason was to adjust his pitch mix in 2024. Normally a heavy fastball-slider hurler, Gray plans to add more changeups and curveballs to the mix. "Hopefully we go from using them two or three times [per game] again to closer to 10," he said. "So just trying to show the slider and fastball less... It'll make the fastball and slider a little bit better." Gray threw well out of the bullpen during the Rangers' postseason run, but he should get a long run in the rotation until the injured starters return. Scherzer is due back in June while deGrom and Mahle are projected to make their 2023 debuts in the second half of the season.
Oct 30 2023Updating a previous item, Gray is not yet locked in to start Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday in Arizona, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported earlier Monday that it would be Gray taking the ball for the Rangers in Game 4. While the right-hander appears to be the most likely candidate to start Tuesday, manager Bruce Bochy noted that he would not be holding Gray or anyone else back from pitching in Game 3, if needed. Bochy should officially announce a Game 4 starter after the conclusion of Game 3.
Oct 15 2023Gray (forearm) is on the Rangers' roster for the American League Championship Series against the Astros, which begins Sunday night in Houston, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander landed on the 15-day injured list with lower forearm tightness after his Sept. 25 start against the Angels, and he'll join the playoff roster after the Rangers advanced through the wild-card series and the ALDS. Max Scherzer (shoulder) also made the roster, potentially lining up Gray to start Game 4 on Thursday since Jordan Montgomery and Nathan Eovaldi are pitching the first two games of the series.
Oct 10 2023Gray (forearm) is on track to rejoin the rotation if the Rangers advance to the ALCS, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray landed on the 15-day injured list just before the end of the regular season due to tightness in his lower right forearm, but he has apparently been trending well with his side work. Max Scherzer (shoulder) could also potentially become an option for Texas in the best-of-seven ALCS, rounding out a four-starter mix that already includes Jordan Montgomery and Nathan Eovaldi. If at least Gray is able to return, Andrew Heaney and Dane Dunning would most likely operate in bulk relief.
Sep 29 2023The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Sept. 28, with right lower forearm tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray made an early exit from his last start Monday against the Angels due to right wrist/forearm tightness and can now be ruled out for the remainder of the regular season. He could potentially return in the postseason if the Rangers are able to stage a deep run, but that all remains to be seen. The 31-year-old right-hander finishes with a 9-8 record, 4.12 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 142:54 K:BB in 29 starts covering 157.1 innings.
Sep 27 2023Gray (wrist) underwent imaging Tuesday and is awaiting the results, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was removed from Monday's game ahead of the bottom of the seventh inning. He came out to warm up but quickly left with trainers. The Rangers have described the decision to remove the right-hander as precautionary.
Sep 25 2023Gray was removed from Monday's start against the Angels due to right wrist tightness, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out seven over six innings before leaving the game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray went out to the mound to work the bottom of the seventh inning, but he didn't feel quite right during his warmups and ultimately left the game with trainers. He'll be considered day-to-day until the team evaluates him further.
Sep 20 2023Gray did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk over 2.1 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray found himself in an early 3-0 hole after surrendering a first-inning homer to Adam Duvall before Bobby Dalbec tacked on a fourth run with a solo blast in the second. While the Rangers' would rally to win thanks to a 15-run outburst, it was another disappointing outing for Gray, who's failed to make it through four innings in each of his last three starts, allowing eight runs in that span (8.2 innings). Overall, the 31-year-old Gray is 8-8 with a 4.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 135:54 K:BB through 28 starts (151.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week against the Angels.
Sep 15 2023Gray (8-8) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Guardians. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray earned the loss, and while it was not his best effort a tip of the hat can also be extended to Andrew Heaney, who allowed six runs over the subsequent two innings and the Rangers offense, which was stymied until the ninth with the game already out of hand. Gray has allowed at least three earned runs in his last five starts and seven of his last nine for an ERA of 5.72 over that stretch. With the Rangers in a dog fight to win the AL West, Gray will look to right the ship in his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place mid-week at home against Boston.
Sep 10 2023Gray allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray got into trouble in the third inning, and Andrew Heaney was brought in to finish off the frame. This was the third time this season Gray has failed to complete three innings, though he's escaped with a no-decision in each of those outings. The right-hander has allowed 16 runs (15 earned) across 23.2 innings during his five-start winless streak. He's now at a 3.96 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 131:51 K:BB through 145.1 innings over 26 starts this year. Gray is tentatively projected to make his next start on the road in Cleveland.
Sep 3 2023Gray did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks over five innings against Minnesota. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray kept the Twins off the board through four, but a three-run homer by Royce Lewis tied the game for the Twins and cost Gray a chance to pick up his ninth win. The eight strikeouts were a silver-lining in an otherwise mediocre outing that saw him allow 11 Twins to reach base. Gray has now struck out 22 batters over his last 15 innings but has a 6.60 ERA during that same span. His next start is scheduled to take place next weekend in what looks to be a much softer matchup at home against Oakland.
Aug 28 2023Gray did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Mets. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a strong bounce-back performance from Gray after he surrendered five runs in a loss to Arizona in his last outing. His nine strikeouts were the most he's had in a game since June 7. Overall, Gray's 8-7 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 120:45 K:BB across 24 starts (137.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins this weekend in his next start.
Aug 22 2023Gray (8-7) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray needed 83 pitches (52 strikes) to get through four frames in the poor outing. He'd allowed just one run over his last two starts combined, but he'd given up 11 runs across 10.1 innings in the two outings before that. Overall, Gray has a 3.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 111:44 K:BB through 131.2 innings across 23 starts this year. He's lacked consistency over the last couple of months, but he'll aim to get back on track on the road versus the Mets next week.
Aug 16 2023Gray (8-6) took the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up a solo homer to Shohei Ohtani in the first inning but kept Los Angeles off the scoreboard for the rest of his outing. However, Reid Detmers and a pair of Angels relievers shut down the Rangers' potent offense, saddling Gray with first loss since July 5. Despite the defeat, the right-hander picked up his second straight quality start, and he's allowed just one run over 14 frames during that stretch. He appears to be back on track after giving up 11 runs over 10.1 innings across his previous two starts.
Aug 11 2023Gray (8-5) allowed two hits and struck out seven without walking a batter over seven scoreless innings to earn the win Friday over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray turned in an excellent start, which was his third scoreless outing of seven or more innings this season. Both hits he allowed were singles, while the seven strikeouts were his most in a start since he fanned 12 Cardinals on June 7. Gray is now at a 3.51 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 102:39 K:BB through 120.2 innings over 21 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Angels next week.
Aug 6 2023Gray (7-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 9-8 victory over the Marlins, surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Marcus Semien error in the fourth inning helped mitigate the damage to Gray's ERA, but it was still another shaky performance from the right-hander -- he's failed to complete six innings in three straight starts, and he's been tagged for four runs or more in five of his last six. Despite the summer swoon, he'll take a 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB through 113.2 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come next weekend in San Francisco.
Aug 5 2023Gray will start Saturday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will be Gray's first time pitching since July 24, a span of 11 days in between outings. Since he last pitched, the Rangers acquired two new starters at the trade deadline, which altered the rotation pattern and may have resulted in the long layoff. Gray had a leg injury entering the previous start, so perhaps that was involved in the decision to give him so much time off. Gray has not won a game since June 2 and sports a 5.36 ERA over the eight starts since.
Jul 24 2023Gray allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision against Houston on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The good news is that Gray was able to make his scheduled start after being struck on the leg by a comebacker in his previous outing Wednesday. However, the right-hander couldn't contain the Astros' offense, tying a season-worst mark by allowing six runs. To Gray's credit, he managed to stick around for five frames after allowing the first five batters he faced to reach base and giving up four runs in the first inning. The veteran hurler's ERA rose to 3.66 as a result of the rough outing, continuing a troubling trend after it sat at an impressive 2.32 through June 7.
Jul 23 2023Gray (leg) will start Monday's series opener against the Astros, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander exited his previous outing Wednesday against Tampa Bay after being struck in the shin by a comebacker, but he's been cleared to make his next start and has actually been moved up a day in the rotation with Nathan Eovaldi (rest) being skipped. Gray has an 0-4 record with a 4.66 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 32:14 K:BB across 38.2 frames in seven starts since he last picked up a victory.
Jul 19 2023Gray expects to make his next scheduled start after X-rays on his left leg came back negative, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was struck on the leg by a comebacker off the bat of the Rays' Yandy Diaz in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game and had to be removed. He's managed to escape with merely a bruise, though, and doesn't expect taking the ball early next week in Houston to be a problem.
Jul 14 2023Gray allowed four runs on five hits and three walks over six innings in Friday's win over Cleveland. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All the damage against Gray came in the third frame when he served up a pair of two-run homers. He's yielded 19 runs over his last five starts, driving his ERA from 2.32 to 3.45 in the process. Since his 12-strikeout, zero-walk performance June 7, Gray has posted a lackluster 16:13 K:BB over his last five starts. His next outing is lined up to be at home against the Rays next week.
Jul 6 2023Gray (6-5) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks over six innings as the Rangers were downed 4-2 by the Red Sox. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was far from the best outing of the season for Gray, who threw 58 of 94 pitches for a strike, but he still came away with his eighth quality start. The right-hander has lost four straight decisions, however, and since tossing a complete game against the Cardinals on June 7, he's posted a 6.98 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB in 19.1 innings. Gray will get an extended rest thanks to the All-Star break, one which he likely needs as the 31-year-old is on pace to work more than 170 innings for the first time since 2018.
Jun 30 2023Gray (6-4) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up one run through four frames before the Astros plated four total runs in the fifth and sixth innings. After a stretch of six straight outings allowing fewer than two runs, he's been charged with 12 runs over 13.1 frames in his last three appearances. The 31-year-old righty still owns a solid 3.21 ERA with a 73:27 K:BB through 15 starts. Gray is currently lined up to start in Boston next week.
Jun 25 2023Gray (6-3) took the loss Saturday as the Rangers were downed 1-0 by the Yankees, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Billy McKinney solo shot in the fourth inning accounted for the game's only run. It was a strong bounce-back effort from Gray after he got roughed up by Toronto in his last trip to the mound, and the right-hander has given up one run or less in seven of his last eight starts, posting a 1.97 ERA, 0,83 WHIP and 50:11 K:BB through 50.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, likely to come at home next week against the Tigers.
Jun 18 2023Gray did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray struggled mightily Sunday, lasting just 2.1 innings after throwing seven or more frames in five of his previous six appearances. Over that six-start stretch, Gray posted a 1.99 ERA to pair with a 46:9 K:BB across 45.1 innings. Considering he hadn't allowed more than four runs in a game prior to Sunday's start, fantasy managers should expect Gray to bounce back. However, he's tentatively lined up for a tough start against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium next week.
Jun 17 2023Gray (blister) is listed as the Rangers' scheduled starter for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays at Globe Life Field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray's last turn was skipped due to a blister, but it was deemed to be a minor issue. The right-hander has been dominant since early May, going 5-1 and pitching to a 0.84 ERA over 43 innings (six starts) including a complete game June 7.
Jun 15 2023The Rangers are hopeful that Gray (blister) will be able to start Sunday against the Blue Jays, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray had to be scratched from his last scheduled start because of a blister on his pitching hand, but the issue has been deemed minor and the team remains optimistic he'll be able to avoid a stint on the injured list. The right-hander boasts a 2.32 ERA on the season and struck out 12 in a complete game his last time out.
Jun 12 2023Gray has been scratched from Tuesday's scheduled start versus the Angels due to a blister, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hope seems to be at this point that it's a minor issue and Gray should be able to avoid the injured list, but Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday he's not sure when Gray's next start will be. Bochy also declined to name a starter in Gray's place Tuesday, but Cody Bradford was spotted at Globe Life Field, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Gray certainly showed no signs of the blister being an issue in his last outing, striking out 12 in a complete-game effort against the Cardinals.
Jun 7 2023Gray (6-2) took the loss Wednesday despite allowing just one run on four hits while striking out 12 over nine innings versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray made it six straight starts without allowing more than one run, but the Rangers' bats had a rare off night. He was able to throw the complete game on just 100 pitches (76 strikes) in a dominant outing spoiled only by Alec Burleson's eighth-inning solo home run. Gray now has a 2.32 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 63:20 K:BB through 73.2 innings this season. This was just the second complete game of his career. He's projected for a home start versus the Angels next week.
Jun 2 2023Gray (6-1) allowed two hits and a walk over seven shutout innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was dominant again Friday, letting just one Mariner reach scoring position and retiring the final 10 batters he faced. He's won five consecutive starts while allowing one run or fewer in each. His ERA dropped from 4.40 to 2.51 during that stretch. The veteran righty will carry a 51:20 K:BB into his next start, which is projected to be at home next week against the Cardinals.
May 26 2023Gray (5-1) allowed one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing a solo homer to Adley Rutschman in the first inning, Gray was nearly untouchable. Gray cruised through seven frames while the Rangers dominated the 12-2 victory. He's been lights-out over his last four starts, yielding just three runs with a 27:5 K:BB over 27 frames while earning a win in each outing. The veteran righty lowered his season ERA to 2.81 and has won five consecutive decisions since losing his season debut. Gray is currently projected for a matchup in Detroit next week.
May 21 2023Gray (4-1) picked up the win Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over five innings in an 11-5 victory over the Rockies. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander wasn't particularly efficient in a matchup with his former club, needing 93 pitches (63 strikes) to barely qualify for the win, but the Rangers handed Gray an 8-0 lead after two innings and the outcome was never really in doubt. The 31-year-old has won three straight starts, giving up just two runs in 20 innings over that stretch with a 19:4 K:BB, and he'll try to stay locked in when he next takes the mound, which is likely to come in Baltimore next weekend.
May 14 2023Gray said a mechanical tweak to his slider, designed to give the pitch a "sharper break," is the main reason for a scoreless streak that reached 14.2 innings Saturday, Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray tinkered with the new slider mechanics in spring training but ditched it for the sweeper version of the pitch that acts more like a curveball. The right-hander brought back the "sharper" slider against the Mariners his last time out, and the velocity numbers reflect the change. The pitch averaged 87 mph Saturday, nearly three mph faster than its season average.
May 13 2023Gray (3-1) earned the win Saturday, allowing three hits and two walks over eight scoreless innings against Oakland. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray picked up his second straight quality start, blanking the lowly Athletics across eight innings Saturday after allowing one run over seven innings in his previous start. Though the 31-year-old has strung together a pair of strong performances and has yet to allow more than four runs in a start, Gray sports only a 6.31 K/9 so far, down from his 2022 average of 9.47 K/9 and 2021 average of 9.48 K/9 while giving up 1.39 HR/9, which would match his career-high. Gray has had significantly more success against right-handed hitting, allowing a slash line of .212/.278/.364 compared to a .275/.366/.478 to lefties.
May 9 2023Gray (2-1) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings against Seattle. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray had his best start of the year on Monday, setting new season-highs in strikeouts and innings pitched. This appearance was also the first time that the right-hander did not issue a free pass. The former Rockie is off to a solid start overall, posting a 3.82 ERA and 1.25 WHIP. If the 31-year-old keeps pitching at this level, this will be one of the best seasons of his career.
May 2 2023Gray did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over 5.1 innings in a 6-4 win over Arizona. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All four runs Gray allowed came in the first three innings. He settled down to retire 10 of the last 11 batters he faced and rescue what could have been a disastrous start. The 31-year-old struck out just two batters, continuing a concerning trend. Gray, who has averaged more than a strikeout per inning in his career, has 19 strikeouts in 30.2 innings in 2023.
Apr 3 2023Gray (0-1) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks over 6.1 innings Monday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was on the wrong side of a one-hitter and fell to 0-1 right out of the gate with a tough-luck loss. He rolled through three scoreless innings before coughing up solo shots to Gunnar Henderson and Jorge Mateo in the fourth and fifth frames, respectively. Gray forced 13 swinging strikes, including six with the slider. He's lined up for a road start against the Cubs this weekend.
Mar 29 2023Gray allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out seven over four relief innings in Tuesday's spring game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray followed fellow starter Martin Perez, who worked five innings. He threw an efficient 61 pitches then stayed on the mound and faced Rangers for about 10 minutes following the game. The right-hander will make his first regular-season start next Monday at home against the Orioles.
Mar 17 2023Gray allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four over four scoreless innings in Thursday's spring start against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being scratched from his second scheduled Cactus League start due to back tightness, Gray has put together seven scoreless innings over two starts. He's yet to allow a run over nine spring innings. The 31-year-old right-hander will not be tasked with being the team's ace, as he was in 2022, which could work in his favor.
Mar 9 2023Gray allowed one hit and struck out one over three scoreless innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray made his second Cactus League start and first since being scratched last Friday due to the tightness in his back. The right-hander was pleased with the outing but noted areas of improvement. "I still feel really slow to the plate and working on that," Gray told Jesus Cano of MLB.com. "But some things were good. I thought the fastball was doing pretty well. I'm mixing up a changeup for now, but the sweeping slider, there's still some stuff to manipulate with it." With three weeks left before Opening Day, Gray should get at least three more starts to work on his form.
Mar 7 2023Gray (back) will start for the Rangers on Wednesday in their Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray had to be scratched from his last start because of back tightness, but he threw a bullpen session Sunday without issue and is ready to test things out in a game setting. Durability has been a question at times for Gray, including in his first season with the Rangers in 2022, when he made just 24 starts. He's a pretty good bet to be useful for fantasy managers when on the mound, though.
Mar 6 2023Gray (back) threw a bullpen session Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray reported immediate relief after undergoing treatment Saturday for back tightness that caused him to get scratched from his scheduled start Friday. The right-hander believes he can throw in a game as early as Wednesday.
Mar 5 2023Gray (back) said he "feels normal" after receiving treatment Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was scratched an hour before he was scheduled to start Friday's game after feeling back tightness. The right-hander expects to throw a bullpen session Sunday and could return to game action as soon as Wednesday.
Mar 3 2023Gray is dealing with back tightness and was scratched from his scheduled start Friday versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was set to make his second start of spring training, but he will now look to rest his back and be ready for his next opportunity. In his place, left-hander Taylor Hearn will take over on the mound and face San Francisco.
Feb 27 2023Gray allowed one hit over two scoreless innings in Sunday's spring game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was pleased with the results but told Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News that he felt "out of whack" on the mound, which can be normal for starters in their first spring appearances. The right-hander served as Texas' ace in 2022, but the addition of Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney pushes him further down the rotation. Like all pitchers, health is imperative for the 31-year-old Gray, who's thrown more than 150 innings twice and never more than 200, during his career. He had a 3.96 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 127.1 innings last season.
Oct 5 2022Gray didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up three runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander battled injuries in his first season with Texas and tossed only 127.1 innings, but Gray was effective when he was on the mound. Tuesday's quality start was his eighth of the year, and he'll head into the winter with a 3.96 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 134:39 K:BB. Finally free of Coors Field, the 30-year-old flashed his upside this season, and he'll look to put together a healthier campaign in 2023.
Sep 29 2022Gray allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was back to struggling Thursday after throwing five one-hit innings in his previous start. The 30-year-old gave up two home runs to Mitch Haniger and another long ball to Jarred Kelenic, all of which plated two runs. Gray's ERA spiked to 3.93 with a 1.15 WHIP and 131:39 K:BB through 121.1 innings across 23 starts this year. The right-hander is expected to end his season with a home start versus the Yankees next week.
Sep 23 2022Gray allowed a single unearned run in five innings Friday against the Guardians, striking out just one batter but allowing just one hit, one walk and one hit by pitch. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray did a good job keeping the bases clean Friday, with the Guardians' only run under his watch coming on a throwing error during a stolen base attempt. The Guardians would score five runs off Taylor Hearn immediately after Gray left the game, however, denying the veteran righty the chance to secure a win. Gray tentatively lines up to face the Mariners in Seattle and the Yankees at home to close the year.
Sep 18 2022Gray (7-7) allowed two earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss in a 5-1 defeat against the Rays on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was making his second start since coming off the IL with an oblique strain and threw only 67 pitches. The start could be taken as a step in the right direction for Gray, who threw 45 pitches his last time out Sept 13. He has an excellent 125 strikeouts in 111.1 innings pitched this season, so he could help fantasy managers in that category as he goes deeper into games down the stretch. Gray is tentatively expected to make his next start against the Guardians.
Sep 12 2022Gray (oblique) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Monday's start against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray has been sidelined since the start of August due to an oblique injury, but he'll return to the mound as the starter during the second game of Monday's doubleheader against Miami. The right-hander didn't require a rehab assignment prior to being activated, so it's unclear whether he'll face any workload restrictions during Monday's nightcap.
Sep 11 2022Gray (oblique) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Marlins, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray's oblique injury has sidelined him since the first day of August, but he looks like he's ready to get back on the bump. The right-hander didn't head out on a rehab assignment, so it's unclear what type of workload he will be able to handle in his first game back.
Sep 6 2022Gray (oblique) will throw live batting practice Wednesday and it's possible he won't need a rehab assignment before rejoining the big-league rotation, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers will evaluate Gray after Wednesday's live batting practice session to determine the next step. It's encouraging to hear Gray is on track to return in time to make a few more starts this season if he can avoid setbacks.
Aug 26 2022Gray (oblique) is throwing Friday and is scheduled for a bullpen session Sept. 1, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bullpen session will be the right-hander's first time on the mound since suffering an oblique strain during his last start Aug. 1. Gray is expected to rejoin the Rangers before the end of the campaign, though he's likely to have a modified workload given the limited build-up time.
Aug 2 2022Gray was placed on the 15-day injured list with a strained left oblique Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks, Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander suffered the injury during Monday's start against the Orioles and is now poised to miss the rest of August. Depending on his recovery, Gray may not get back stretched back out to a full workload if he's even able to return before the end of the regular season.
Aug 1 2022Gray was removed from Monday's game against the Orioles in the second inning with left side discomfort. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray's injury forced him to leave Monday's outing after he threw just 48 pitches. It remains to be seen if he will be available to make what was set to be his second start of the week Saturday.
Jul 27 2022Gray (7-5) allowed four earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out eight across 6.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray wasn't particularly sharp through six innings but still managed to limit the Mariners to one run. However, he came undone in the seventh inning, capped by a three-run homer by Julio Rodriguez. Gray entered the start having allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his last eight starts, and he now owns a 3.62 ERA and 113:33 K:BB across 102 frames on the season.
Jul 21 2022Gray (7-4) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five across six scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray dominated the Marlins, and he allowed only three runners to reach scoring position in the start while also generating 13 swinging strikes on 94 total pitches. Gray has been excellent across his last eight starts, maintaining a 1.81 ERA while punching out 58 across 49.2 innings. That strong stretch has lowered his ERA on the campaign to 3.48 across 95.2 frames.
Jul 14 2022Gray (6-4) earned the win over Oakland on Wednesday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out nine batters over seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was dominant in what was arguably his best outing of the season, striking out five of the first six batters he faced and allowing only one baserunner -- via an infield single -- across seven frames. The right-hander racked up 16 swinging strikes and finished with his sixth quality start of the campaign. Gray has been a solid addition to Texas' staff this season, ranking second on the team with six wins while posting a 3.71 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 10.0 K/9 over 89.2 innings.
Jul 8 2022Gray (5-4) allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray got off to a rocky start Friday, coughing up a two-run blast to Carlos Correa in the first inning. He allowed one run over the next four frames before giving up another two-run homer, this time to Ryan Jeffers, in the sixth. The veteran right-hander has won four of his last five starts, posting a 2.64 ERA with a 34:5 K:BB during that stretch. Gray will carry a 4.03 ERA into his projected home matchup with Oakland next week.
Jul 3 2022Gray (4-4) gave up three earned runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven over 5.2 innings to take the loss in a 4-1 defeat to the Mets on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up two home runs off the bats of Starling Marte and Eduardo Escobar and was saddled with his fourth loss of the season. It was a fairly pedestrian start for Gray who had gathered a bit of momentum with a .195 OBA in June after a rocky start to his first season with Texas. The 30-year-old right-hander has a quality 9.5 K/9 rate in 77.1 innings in 2022. He is expected to make his next start Saturday in Minnesota when he will look for win number five.
Jun 29 2022Gray (4-3) gave up one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the year in an 8-3 victory over the Royals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was very sharp in this outing, giving up only one earned run on a single off the bat of Bobby Witt Jr. The 30-year-old veteran now has an ERA of 2.64 in June and lowered his season-long number to 3.89 with the performance. Gray took advantage of the struggling Royals lineup that is depleted from the loss of Salvador Perez (thumb) to move to 4-3 on the season. His next start is expected to be Sunday against the Mets, where he will be defending his newly achieved winning record.
Jun 23 2022Gray (3-3) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from a third-inning homer by Kyle Schwarber, Gray did a good job keeping the Phillies' dangerous offense in check, but he got lifted after 102 pitches (73 strikes) and came one out short of his third straight quality start. Gray is putting together a solid season outside of Colorado, posting a 4.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB through 64.2 innings.
Jun 18 2022Gray (2-3) pitched seven innings and earned the win Friday against the Tigers, allowing no runs on five hits while striking out six and walking none. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray impressed Friday, allowing no runners to score for just the second time this season. It was also his first game this year without allowing a walk. He picked up a quality start for the third time this month, and aside from a recent clunker against the Guardians, seems to have made some adjustments to improve. The righty threw 68 of 102 pitches for strikes against the Tigers on Friday and lowered his ERA to 4.27.
Jun 12 2022Gray struck out 10 in six innings, allowing one run on three hits, three walks and a hit batsman in an 8-6 win Sunday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray allowed a two-out rally in the first inning to account for the only run against him. He did not allow another hit until the sixth inning. Gray has struck out at least 10 batters and allowed only one run in two of his last three starts. The 30-year-old has a 67:25 K:BB with five home runs allowed in 58 innings this year. His next start will likely be next weekend in Detroit.
Jun 8 2022Gray (1-3) took the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Guardians, coughing up five runs on six hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of the damage came in a four-run third inning, but Gray was far from sharp overall as his four free passes were a new season high, while his three whiffs tied his season low. The right-hander has yet to string together two solid starts in a row, and he'll carry a 5.28 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 46 innings into his next outing.
Jun 6 2022Gray will start the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Guardians, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was initially slated to toe the rubber Monday evening in the series opener, but his outing has since been moved to Tuesday after Monday's matchup was postponed due to rain. The right-hander owns a 4.38 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 29:8 K:BB over his last four starts (24.2 innings).
Jun 2 2022Gray allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 12 over seven innings against Tampa Bay on Wednesday, but he did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Gray's best start of the campaign, as he went seven innings for the first time and racked up a season-high 12 strikeouts. He held the Rays scoreless through six frames before giving up a Randy Arozarena solo homer in the seventh. The veteran right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.83 with the quality start, and he'll look to build upon the impressive outing in his next appearance, which is scheduled to take place in Cleveland early next week.
May 27 2022Gray yielded five runs on five hits and three walks over six frames in Friday's win against Oakland. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All five runs charged to Gray came during a nightmare third inning; it was capped off by Sean Murphy and Chad Pinder launching back-to-back solo home runs. The 30-year-old righty had gone four straight starts without allowing a homer since he coughed up a pair against Seattle on April 19. He's now sporting a disappointing 5.56 ERA with a 32:13 K:BB through 34 innings. Gray is lined up to face the Rays at home next week.
May 21 2022Gray (1-2) took the loss during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Astros, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray pitched well against a strong Houston lineup but let in runs in the first and fifth innings, with the two-run deficit proving too steep to overcome. The quality start marked the 30-year-old's longest outing so far this season, and first quality start in six turns, though he's now recorded four strikeouts or fewer in every start but one. Gray is scheduled to pitch again at Oakland next weekend.
May 16 2022Gray (1-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up three runs in the first inning, including two runs from a Brandon Marsh single. He then coughed up another run on Andrew Velazquez's RBI single in the fourth. Gray has now given up at least three runs in four of his first five starts and has yet to complete six innings in any outing. He'll carry a 5.73 ERA into his projected start in Houston this weekend.
May 15 2022Gray (knee) threw a bullpen session without issues Saturday and is projected to start Monday against the Angels, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray, who left his last start against the Yankees when he felt "something" in his left knee, will wear a brace but is under no restrictions, per Texas manager Chris Woodward.
May 10 2022Rangers manager Chris Woodward said Tuesday that he expects Gray (knee) to make his next start, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray exited early in his start Monday against the Yankees after 4.1 innings due to left knee soreness, the second time he's dealt with a knee issue this season. It doesn't look as though he'll have to miss any turns in the rotation, though he may wear a knee brace for his next few outings just to be safe. Gray tentatively lines up to make his next start Sunday at home versus the Red Sox.
May 9 2022The Rangers announced Gray's early exit from his start Monday against the Yankees was due to left knee soreness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas described Gray's removal from the contest with one out in the fifth inning as precautionary, but the severity of his injury won't be known until he's re-evaluated Tuesday. According to Levi Weaver of The Athletic, Gray apparently felt something in his knee while fielding an Isiah Kiner-Falefa bunt earlier in the contest, but this latest issue isn't concerned as serious as the low-grade MCL sprain that previously sent him to the injured list. Gray was cruising prior to his departure, ending the day with four punchouts over 4.1 scoreless innings while scattering three walks and two hits. He won't factor into the decision after exiting with the game tied at 0-0.
May 7 2022Gray will start Monday's game against the Yankees, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers have had to shift their rotation multiple times due to a pair of rainouts in their series against the Yankees. As a result, Gray will have his start pushed back one day. In his place, Dane Dunning will start the first game of a doubleheader Sunday with Glenn Otto tabbed for the second matchup.
May 3 2022Gray allowed three runs on five hits and one walk over three innings during Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Phillies, He had three strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray surrendered three runs on three hits during the opening frame but followed with two straight scoreless innings. The right-hander was limited to 60 pitches in his first start back from the injured list and figures keep building up his workload in subsequent outings. He has a 7.50 ERA through three starts and lines up to next take the mound Sunday versus the surging Yankees.
Apr 22 2022Gray (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday, retroactive to April 20. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old will miss some time with a low-grade MCL sprain in his left knee, though it isn't expected to be a lengthy absence. Gray suffered the injury during Tuesday's start against the Mariners, which was his first game back after going down with a finger injury Opening Day. Glenn Otto will step into his spot in the rotation and will pitch Friday in Oakland.
Apr 21 2022Gray is dealing with a low-grade MCL strain in his left knee and will require a trip to the injured list, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray returned from the injured list for Tuesday's start against the Mariners after missing time with a finger issue. Although Gray will require an IL stint due to his knee injury, general manager Chris Young said that the injury isn't expected to force the right-hander to miss much time. Glenn Otto will now start Friday's series opener against Oakland, while Spencer Howard (finger) will be pushed back to Sunday. However, the Rangers are optimistic that Gray will be able to return after missing just one turn through the rotation.
Apr 19 2022Gray (0-1) took the loss during Tuesday's 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start since Opening Day, Gray put himself in an early hole by surrendering a Eugenio Suarez three-run home in the first following a HBP and walk. While it was mostly smooth sailing from there, the early deficit proved too steep for Texas to overcome. The 30-year-old has a high 7.00 ERA through two starts and has failed to surpass five innings or four strikeouts in either appearance. He's currently scheduled to face off against Oakland on Sunday.
Apr 12 2022Gray (finger) said Tuesday that he believes he's on track to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible April 19, independent baseball journalist Jeff Wilson reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Gray has yet to throw a bullpen session since being placed on the IL, he's pleased with how his hand has healed after he developed a blister on one of his fingers coming out of his Rangers debut April 8 in Toronto. Due to off days Wednesday and next Monday, the Rangers will be able to get by with a four-man rotation if Gray is on fact on track to return for the start of next week's series in Seattle.
Apr 9 2022Gray was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a blister on his throwing hand, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers will be able to go with four starters due to a couple off days on the schedule. Gray could return April 19 in Seattle if he misses the minimum time. Spencer Patton was recalled in a corresponding move.
Mar 29 2022Manager Chris Woodward said Tuesday that Gray will start the Rangers' Opening Day game April 8 in Toronto, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given that he signed a four-year, $56 million contract over the winter along with the fact that the Rangers are lacking in established starting depth behind him, Gray was the obvious choice to get the ball on Opening Day. The 30-year-old power right-hander has flashed intriguing upside at various points since reaching the big leagues in 2015, but calling Coors Field his home park for his first seven MLB seasons has played a major role in him submitting an underwhelming 4.59 ERA through 829.1 career innings. The move from Colorado to Texas' Globe Life Field -- which has proven to be a forgiving environment for pitchers in the two years since its inception -- could put Gray in good position to deliver the best season of his career. At the very least, Gray should be a solid source of innings volume; not including the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign, he's covered at least 149 frames in each of the last three seasons.
Mar 25 2022Gray allowed one run on four hits and struck out four over two innings in Thursday's spring training start against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray made his Texas debut and looked sharp. All four strikeouts were the result of a revamped slider, Jesse Borek of MLB.com reports. "It's moving a lot more," Gray said of the slider he worked on with pitching coach Brendan Sagara. "It's got a lot more horizontal action on it. It probably moves double the amount my old one does... This one kind of goes across the whole plate." The right-hander already had a pretty good slider, as batters were limited to a .156 batting average and .300 slugging percentage against the pitch he threw a career-high 38.1 percent of the time in 2021. Gray is a leading candidate to become the the ace of a Rangers' staff that's looking for a bona fide No. 1 starter.
Nov 28 2021Gray signed a four-year, $56 million contract with the Rangers on Sunday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Rockies earlier in the offseason, so the Rangers won't be forced to give up a draft pick after signing the right-hander. The 30-year-old made 29 starts for Colorado during the 2021 campaign and logged a 4.59 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 149 innings. Gray will no longer have to pitch his home games in the altitude at Coors Field after spending his first seven major-league seasons in Colorado, and he'll have a prominent role in the Rangers' rotation in 2022.
Nov 7 2021Gray didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Rockies, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray spent the first seven seasons of his career in Colorado but will now hit free agency without a draft pick penalty attached after the Rockies elected not to extend a one-year, $18.4 million offer to him. The 30-year-old recorded a 4.59 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 149 innings across 29 starts in 2021.
Oct 2 2021Gray pitched four innings against Arizona on Friday, surrendering seven runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran began the contest with a pair of scoreless innings before falling apart in the third. In that frame, Arizona swatted three homers and put up seven runs to take a 7-0 lead. Colorado came back to pull off the victory, however, and Gray was let off the hook. The seven runs were the most the veteran has given up in a single game this season, as were the trio of long balls. Assuming Gray doesn't take the mound again this weekend, he'll finish the campaign with an 8-12 record to go along with a 4.59 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 157:58 K:BB across 149 innings.
Sep 19 2021Gray (8-11) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings, taking the loss Sunday versus Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he didn't get much help in the 3-0 loss, Gray's spotty control led to a lackluster short start. The right-hander threw 46 of 70 pitches for strikes in the contest. He's given up seven runs in 14 innings since returning from a forearm injury. Overall, the 29-year-old owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 145:58 K:BB in 140.1 innings this year. He's projected for a difficult home start next weekend versus the homer-happy Giants.
Sep 18 2021Gray will start Sunday against the Nationals, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was originally set to start Tuesday at Coors Field against the Dodgers. He'll get a better draw now, as he'll fill the rotation slot of Ryan Feltner, who was optioned Saturday. In two starts since returning from the injured list, Gray has allowed five earned runs across 10 innings -- good for a 4.50 ERA -- while racking up 15 strikeouts as opposed to just three walks.
Sep 15 2021Gray (8-10) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a win over Atlanta on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray secured his first win since July 30 after limiting Atlanta to two runs over five innings. He got off to a bit of a rough start as Atlanta took an early 1-0 lead in the first off a Freddie Freeman single but would eventually get into a bit of a groove, as he got nine outs in a span of 10 batters. Atlanta got to him again in the fourth for another run on a double by Dansby Swanson and Gray's night eventually ended after five frames and 90 pitches. The 29-year-old hasn't logged a quality start since Aug. 4 but has strung together two solid efforts to open up September. Overall. Gray has a 4.16 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 140:56 K:BB over 136.1 innings and lines up to face the Nationals on the road his next time out.
Sep 8 2021Gray (forearm) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight in five-plus innings in a no-decision versus San Francisco on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander returned after a minimum stay on the injured list, and he was able to keep San Francisco in check for five innings before Brandon Crawford's game-tying blast in the sixth. All in all, it was a solid showing from Gray after his brief IL stint. He has a 4.18 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 133:54 K:BB through 131.1 innings this season. He'll look to improve on his 7-10 record next week in a tough road start in Atlanta.
Sep 6 2021Rockies manager Bud Black said Gray (forearm) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Giants in Colorado, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was moved to the injured list Sept. 1 with right forearm tightness, but he looks like he'll end up missing the minimum amount of the time due to the injury. He checked out fine after completing a simulated game Saturday, and assuming he comes out of a bullpen session Monday without any further setbacks, he should be on track to reclaim his rotation spot by the middle of the week. Ryan Feltner, who made a spot start in Sunday's loss to Atlanta, will likely move to the bullpen to clear room in the rotation for Gray.
Sep 2 2021Gray (forearm) is expected to throw a simulated game Saturday, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray landed on the 10-day injured list with right forearm tightness Wednesday, but it's encouraging to see him face hitters shortly after his placement on the IL. The Rockies were initially hopeful that the righty would be able to make his next start after he sustained his injury Aug. 28, so he could be in line for a brief absence. However, a better idea of Gray's status will likely be revealed based on how his forearm responds after Saturday's throwing session.
Sep 1 2021The Rockies placed Gray on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right forearm tightness, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After exiting his start against the Dodgers over the weekend with the forearm issue, the Rockies were initially optimistic that Gray wouldn't miss a turn through the rotation. His ability to complete a bullpen session Tuesday without incident seemingly backed up that sentiment, but Gray's forearm was evidently still bothering him a day after the workout, prompting the Rockies to deactivate him. Chi Chi Gonzalez, who has made 16 starts this season before recently shifting to the bullpen, likely represents the top candidate to step in to make a spot start for Gray in Thursday's home game against Atlanta.
Aug 31 2021Manager Bud Black said Gray's bullpen session Tuesday went well and that he's optimistic the right-hander will be able to start Thursday against Atlanta, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray left his Saturday start against the Dodgers in the third inning with forearm tightness. He played catch Monday, and so long as he comes out of his Tuesday bullpen session without any setbacks, he should take the ball Thursday without missing a turn through the rotation. The righty will be looking to shake off a rough month of August in which he posted a 6.55 ERA and 1.77 WHIP across 22 innings.
Aug 29 2021Gray (forearm) is expected to test his injury during a throwing session Monday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray left Saturday's start against the Dodgers due to right forearm tightness, and manager Bud Black said Sunday that the 29-year-old is questionable for his next turn through the rotation, which would come Thursday at home versus Atlanta. The Rockies should have a better idea of the right-hander's status based on how he feels following Monday's throwing session.
Aug 28 2021Manager Bud Black said Gray exited Saturday's start against the Dodgers with right forearm tightness, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Black indicated the injury was up toward Gray's elbow, though the apparent location of the tightness on the lateral side -- away from the UCL -- is a bit of potentially encouraging news. Regardless, any forearm or elbow injury is a concerning development for a pitcher, leaving Gray's status up in the air as he continues to be evaluated over the next few days. The right-hander didn't factor in the decision Saturday after giving up a run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts over two innings.
Aug 23 2021Gray fell to 7-10 after allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight over 5.1 innings in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he surprisingly stayed put in Colorado after the July 30 trade deadline, Gray has seen his fantasy value trend downward. He's now lost four consecutive decisions, submitting a 6.75 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over that stretch. On a positive note, Gray has allowed only one home run across 20 innings while striking out 28, so his ratios should be in line for some correction in the likely event his .473 BABIP veers closer to his career mark (.316).
Aug 15 2021Gray (7-9) took the loss Sunday against the Giants after allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning five across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray couldn't escape the fifth inning for the second straight outing and now he has given up at least three runs in three appearances in a row. To make things even more complicated, Gray has now dropped each of his last three decisions and now owns a 4.95 ERA across three starts this month.
Aug 11 2021Gray (7-8) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Astros after allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while fanning nine across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray struck out nine batters but wasn't sharp, hitting a batter and tossing a wild pitch in addition to issuing two walks. Plus, only 58 of his 97 pitches went for strikes. The hard-throwing right-hander ended a streak of eight consecutive outings in which he allowed three or fewer runs, a stretch in which he also posted six quality starts. Despite this subpar outing, he still owns a 3.76 ERA with a 10.0 K/9 across seven starts since the beginning of July.
Aug 5 2021Gray dropped to 7-7 on the season after working six innings and giving up three runs to take a loss Wednesday against the Cubs. He scattered eight hits and a walk and struck out six in the Rockies' 3-2 loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he looked to be one of the top starting pitchers most likely to be moved prior to last week's trade deadline, Gray ultimately stayed put in Colorado. While Gray couldn't preserve the Rockies' early 2-0 lead, he was mostly able to keep the Chicago bats at bay en route to turning in a quality start for the sixth time in seven outings. His ERA and WHIP now sit at 3.67 and 1.23, respectively.
Jul 26 2021Gray worked five innings and didn't factor into the decision Sunday in the Rockies' 3-2 loss to the Dodgers. He gave up two runs on four hits and and three walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from allowing a pair of solo home runs to Chris Taylor, Gray otherwise quieted a typically potent Dodgers offense, albeit one that was without the services of Mookie Betts (hip), Cody Bellinger (hamstring), Max Muncy (paternity list) and Corey Seager (hand). Through 18 starts, Gray is sporting a 3.67 ERA, which matches the career-best ratio he posted in 2017. Sunday's outing may have been Gray's last with the Rockies, as the impending free agent is sure to be a popular target in trade talks leading up to Friday's deadline. If he isn't moved, the right-hander tentatively lines up to start the Rockies' game that day in San Diego.
Jul 18 2021Gray allowed two runs on six hits and a pair of walks over seven innings Sunday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray put together his fourth consecutive quality start, limiting the Dodgers to a two-run homer by Justin Turner in the third inning. The performance lowered Gray's ERA to 3.68, which would challenge the career-best 3.67 mark he posted in 2017. The 29-year-old is 6-6 on the year with a 1.22 WHIP and 87:37 K:BB in 93 innings, and his home ERA (3.22 in nine starts) at Coors Field is actually considerably better than his road number (4.54 in seven starts).
Jul 11 2021Gray (6-6) won Sunday's 3-1 game against San Diego, allowing one run on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray's only problem inning was the second, when he loaded the bases with none out but was able to induce two ground balls to escape the jam with just one Padre crossing the plate. He fell in line for the win following a Chris Owings home run in the top of the seventh to bring his overall record back to .500 at 6-6. He enters the break having tossed three consecutive quality starts and with a solid 3.77 ERA.
Jul 7 2021Gray didn't factor in the decision against Arizona on Tuesday. He pitched six innings and gave up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran looked to be in for a rough outing when the first four hitters he faced in the game each slugged a double. Those two-baggers yielded three Arizona runs, but they were all the Diamondbacks ended up mustering against Gray on the evening. Following the barrage of doubles, Gray retired 10 straight hitters and gave up only two more hits -- both singles -- the rest of the way. He finished with his second straight quality start and seventh overall on the season. Gray will carry a 3.94 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively lined up to come Sunday at San Diego.
Jun 30 2021Gray (5-6) picked up the win Wednesday against the Pirates, fanning five while allowing two runs on two hits and four walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the four free passes are less than ideal for the right-hander, Gray should feel good about the direction he's heading in after another strong start. The two runs he yielded in the first inning mark his only blip across 11 innings since being activated from the injured list June 25 and he now holds a respectable 3.89 ERA on the campaign. Gray lines up to take the ball Tuesday in Arizona.
Jun 25 2021Gray allowed five hits and no walks while striking out 10 in five innings in Friday's loss to the Brewers. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray returned to the mound after he missed the last three weeks with a right elbow strain, and he was dominant Friday while throwing 83 pitches. He racked up double-digit strikeouts for the 15th time in his career, which tied Pedro Astacio for the most appearances with double-digit strikeouts in franchise history. The right-hander hasn't earned a win since May 5, and his performance Friday was his first scoreless appearance of the season. Gray tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Pirates on Wednesday.
Jun 24 2021Gray (elbow) will return from the 10-day injured list to start Friday's series opener in Milwaukee, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray received the green light to return from the IL after he struck out six while allowing two runs over four innings in his rehab start last weekend at Triple-A Albuquerque. He tossed 62 pitches in that outing, so he'll likely only have a light workload restriction as he steps back into the Colorado rotation. Gray has been on the shelf since June 5 with a right flexor strain.
Jun 17 2021Gray (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray is slated to serve as the starter for Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, and he could rejoin the Rockies' rotation next weekend in Milwaukee if all goes well. The right-hander threw a bullpen session Thursday and has been working on the timing of his delivery recently.
Jun 16 2021Gray (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Thursday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was hopeful that his next throwing session would be a simulated game, but he said that he needs to work on the timing of his delivery before he faces hitters. However, the right-hander said that he feels healthy, and it's encouraging that he'll be able to resume mound work Thursday. A timetable for his return to the major-league rotation isn't yet clear.
Jun 10 2021Rockies manager Bud Black said Gray (elbow) will play catch from 90-to-100 feet Thursday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray is initiating his throwing program just under a week after he was pulled from his start against the Athletics with a right flexor strain. The injury appears to be mild, and the right-hander looks on track to return from the injured list shortly after he's first eligible to return July 15. Black said the Rockies plan to have Gray ramp up the intensity of his throwing program over the weekend, when the right-hander will presumably advance to pitching off a mound and facing hitters in live batting practice.
Jun 8 2021Gray (elbow) is traveling with the team and will start playing catch Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bud Black has expressed optimism about Gray's elbow soreness. Gray landed on the injured list June 5, but has no structural damage so he should be on-track to return in the near future.
Jun 5 2021Rockies manager Bud Black said Saturday that the MRI on Gray's elbow revealed no structural damage, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier Saturday with a right flexor strain. This latest update resembles much better news for the right-hander, and per Nick Groke of The Athletic, the plan is for Gray resume throwing at some point during the upcoming road trip. An exact timeline for when he could rejoin the Rockies' rotation isn't known at this point, but a mid-June return figures to be a best-case scenario.
Jun 4 2021Gray left Friday's game against the Athletics with right elbow soreness and tightness in his forearm, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray allowed five runs on four hits and two walks in 2.1 innings prior to his departure, and manager Bud Black said that the right-hander's injury contributed to his lackluster performance. The severity of the issue isn't yet known, but Gray's status is worth monitoring in the coming days.
Jun 3 2021Gray is now scheduled to make his next start Friday at home against the Athletics, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Earlier in the week, Gray was listed as the Rockies' probable starter for Thursday's series finale with the Rangers at Coors Field, but manager Bud Black ultimately elected to push the right-hander back a day in the pitching schedule, allowing Austin Gomber to get the nod Thursday. Both Gomber and Gray made starts in the May 29 doubleheader with the Pirates, so the late switch in the pitching schedule won't affect the other members of the rotation.
May 29 2021Gray fell to 4-5 on the season after allowing three runs in three innings of work in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Brewers, striking out two while walking three and allowing four hits. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: None of Gray's innings were clean, though all the damage was done in the second inning. He allowed each of the first four runners to reach base, including a walk to opposing starter JT Brubaker, with the first three coming around to score. Gray has now allowed three or more earned runs in each of his last three starts, striking out just six total batters across that stretch.
May 28 2021Gray won't pitch as scheduled Friday at Pittsburgh after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The contest will be made up via a doubleheader Saturday, and Gray will take the mound for the Rockies in the first game of the twin bill, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
May 23 2021Gray allowed three runs on two hits and two walks over six innings in Sunday's win against Arizona. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray cruised through four perfect innings before yielding a leadoff single in the fifth. Arizona finally got on the board in the sixth after a Ketel Marte sacrifice fly followed by a two-run blast off the bat of Pavin Smith. Gray avoided losing a third straight game but still slightly raised his season ERA to 3.59. He's lined up to take the mound in Pittsburgh late next week.
May 17 2021Gray (4-4) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Padres after allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and a walk while fanning one across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was coming off two straight outings allowing two or fewer runs, but the wheels came off in this one -- he gave up season-worst marks in runs allowed, earned runs allowed and strikeouts, while also tying his season-worst mark in the hits department. He still owns a 3.48 ERA, but this was a clear step in the wrong direction for the right-hander. Gray is slated to start during the upcoming weekend series against the Diamondbacks at home.
May 12 2021Gray (4-3) allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out six in 5.2 innings. He took the loss in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was effective through five innings, but an error and two walks loaded the bases in the sixth. Robert Stephenson relieved Gray and allowed a grand slam to Victor Caratini, leaving Gray with his third loss in eight starts. The right-hander has pitched fairly well so far with a 2.93 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 44:19 K:BB in 46 innings this season. His next start is tentatively scheduled as a rematch in San Diego next week.
May 5 2021Gray (4-2) earned the win Wednesday against the Giants after giving up two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander surrendered a two-run homer to Brandon Crawford during the second inning, but he otherwise kept San Francisco off the board. Gray is off to a strong start this season with a 3.12 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 38:16 K:BB over 40.1 innings through seven outings.
May 1 2021Gray (3-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk while striking out three across six innings to take the loss Friday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Gray's worst start of 2021; he allowed a season-high four earned runs. The damage came in the third inning in which he surrendered four straight hits with two outs, followed by a throwing error by Josh Fuentes, resulting in a four-run inning. Other than that, he pitched well and managed to get through six innings. The 29-year-old has had a good start to the season with a 3.15 ERA and 34.1 innings pitched through six starts.
Apr 26 2021Gray (3-1) earned another win Sunday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray allowed two early solo home runs to Bryce Harper but otherwise held the rest of the Phillies lineup quiet en route to his third victory of the season. Four of Gray's five starts have come at the hitter-friendly Coors Field thus far but he's managed to go 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA and owns a 24:11 K:BB through 24.1 innings. His next scheduled start is set to be Friday versus the Diamondbacks, a team he picked up his first win of the season against after allowing one run over 6.2 strong innings back on April 8.
Apr 21 2021Gray (2-1) earned the win against Houston on Tuesday, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits and four walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray's control wasn't at its peak in the contest -- he walked four batters for the third time in his past four games -- but he navigated around the baserunners to notch his second quality start of the campaign. The veteran picked up his second win and lowered his season ERA to 2.42 in the process. After posting an ugly 6.69 ERA across 39 innings last year, Gray has bounced back with a solid start to the 2021 season. He'll look to keep it going Sunday when he faces the Phillies at Coors Field.
Apr 15 2021Gray (1-1) took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, pitching four innings and allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was victimized by Justin Turner in the contest, as the Dodgers' third baseman plated two of the three runs against the veteran right-hander with a single and a home run. Gray opened the campaign with a pair of strong starts, so, in spite of Wednesday's disappointing outing, he still owns a 2.87 ERA on the season. He'll look to improve upon that mark when he faces Houston at home Tuesday in his next scheduled start.
Apr 8 2021Gray (1-0) earned the win Thursday after holding the Diamondbacks to one run on two hits and four walks while striking out five across 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite an average fastball of 92.8 mph, among the lowest in 125 career appearances, Gray worked in his slider to make things unpredictable. Clearly it worked as the 29-year-old gave up just one run for the second time this season, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Meanwhile, he recorded his 700th career strikeout, good for fifth all-time on the Rockies leaderboard. Next up, Gray heads to Los Angeles on Wednesday for a rematch with the Dodgers. Last time out, he held the Dodgers to one run across five innings, striking out seven.
Apr 4 2021Gray (full body cramping) is expected to make his next start, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Word out of Colorado is that Gray is fine after he left Saturday's game with full body cramping. Gray more than held his own in a brutal home matchup against the Dodgers in his 2021 debut, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven over five innings. He has a more favorable matchup this coming week against the Diamondbacks, but it's at home, and it's still difficult to feel good about Gray against any opponent at Coors.
Apr 3 2021Gray exited Saturday's start against the Dodgers with full body cramping, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old delivered five scoreless frames before giving up a leadoff double to Corey Seager to open the sixth inning, and the right-hander promptly exited after being visited by the athletic trainer. Seager came around to score, so Gray ended up allowing one run on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts across five innings. He should be considered day-to-day and may not miss a start since it appears to be a minor issue.
Mar 25 2021Gray allowed seven runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one over 2.1 innings in Wednesday's spring win over the Brewers. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray gave up a solo home run to Kolten Wong in the first inning, and Wong also hit a liner off Gray's right hand in the third inning before he gave up six more runs in the frame. Gray said that he'll be sore for a few days, but he didn't sound too concerned about the hand, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The right-hander has posted a 9.90 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 10 innings across three spring starts.
Mar 20 2021Gray (1-0) allowed three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six over five innings as he earned the win in Friday's spring game against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray encountered some trouble during the third and fourth innings Friday, but he was still relatively sharp and earned the win during the Cactus League start. The right-hander's fastball hit 96 mph during the outing, and he didn't feel tired after throwing 71 pitches in his longest outing of the spring, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Gray missed the final month of the 2020 season due to a shoulder issue but appears to be fully healthy ahead of Opening Day in 2021.
Mar 15 2021Gray allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings in Sunday's spring loss to the Rangers. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was scheduled to pitch four innings Sunday, but an abundance of foul balls by Texas resulted in the right-hander reaching his pitch limit with two outs in the third inning. He got into some trouble in the second inning but only allowed one run via a sacrifice fly, and he recorded strikeouts in every inning. Gray had a career-low 94 mph average fastball velocity in 2020 before he was shut down due to right shoulder inflammation, but he consistently reached 96 and 97 mph during his outing Sunday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Assuming he remains healthy this spring, Gray should begin the regular season as a back-end starter for Colorado.
Feb 20 2021Rockies bullpen coach Darryl Scott said that Gray (shoulder) has been a full go at spring training, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was shutdown in September last season with a shoulder issue and spent the offseason in a maintenance program for the injury. Scott noted that Gray's shoulder "feels great" and that he is throwing all of his pitches. After posting a 6.69 ERA and 1.44 WHIP across 39 innings in 2020, Gray will look to bounce back with full health once again.
Jan 15 2021Gray (shoulder) and the Rockies avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $6 million contract Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray won't be getting much of a raise compared to the $5.6 million he made last season, but that appears to be deserved based on his 2020 performance. In eight starts, he struggled to a 6.69 ERA, striking out just 12.6 percent of opposing batters. The Rockies will be looking for him to return to his 2019 form going forward, as he posted a 3.84 ERA while striking out a respectable 23.5 percent of opposing batters that season.
Sep 16 2020Gray (shoulder) was shut down for the year by the Rockies on Wednesday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray hit the injured list in early September with right shoulder inflammation. There hasn't been any indication that the diagnosis is worse than initial reports suggested, but he simply doesn't have time to build back up before the end of the year. He'll finish the campaign with a very poor 6.69 ERA and a strikeout rate that collapsed to 12.6 percent, barely more than half of his 23.5 percent mark from 2019.
Sep 4 2020Gray was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to Sept. 2. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was shelled by the Giants on Tuesday as he allowed seven runs on nine hits over 2.2 innings, and his injury could have contributed to his struggles. It's unclear how much time he's expected to miss as a result of his shoulder issue. Right-hander Jose Mujica was recalled from alternate camp and could take Gray's place in the starting rotation while he's sidelined.
Sep 1 2020Gray (2-4) took the loss against the Giants on Tuesday, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an ugly day overall for Colorado's pitching staff, which yielded 23 total runs and saw its most effective effort come from a catcher (Drew Butera, who allowed one run in 1.2 innings). Gray took much of the damage, surrendering three runs in the first frame, two more in the second and another pair in the third before his outing mercifully ended. Four of the nine hits Gray gave up went for extra bases, including a pair of home runs off the bat of Alex Dickerson. Gray was coming off a strong start in his previous outing, but he has struggled overall in 2020, posting a 6.69 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 39 innings. Once a reliable source of punchouts -- he averaged at least one whiff per inning in each of the past four seasons -- the right-hander has seen his strikeout rate topple to a career-low 13.4 percent this season due, in part, to losing a couple ticks off his fastball and slider. Gray will try to get back on the right track when he faces the Padres in San Diego on Monday.
Aug 27 2020Gray (2-3) earned the win Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. He allowed one run on three hits and three walks while fanning five across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray was coming off four straight outings allowing three or more earned runs, so this clearly was a bounce-back performance for the hard-throwing right-hander. Gray relied more on his slider (30 pitches) than his fastball (28) in this game and the plan seems to have worked, though now he needs to show more consistency to leave his early season struggles behind. Gray has a 6.58 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP in five starts this month.
Aug 22 2020Gray (1-3) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Dodgers after allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks across 3.2 innings. He didn't strike out anyone. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray didn't record a single strikeout for the first time since 2015 -- excluding relief appearances -- and he had all sorts of problems against one of the top lineups in the National League. He's now allowed three or more runs in four straight starts and will try to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for Wednesday on the road against the Diamondbacks.
Aug 16 2020Gray (1-2) allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven across seven innings to earn the win Sunday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray looked like he was in for a tough outing as he surrendered two home runs and three earned runs through four innings. However, he retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced to salvage a strong outing, particularly given that it was at Coors Field. It was a bounceback effort for Gray, as he was hit around for eight earned runs in his previous outing. He'll look to turn in another strong effort in his next start, currently projected to come Friday at the Dodgers.
Aug 10 2020Gray (0-2) allowed eight runs on 11 hits across 3.1 innings Monday, striking out two and taking the loss against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Diamondbacks wasted no time Monday, scoring two runs in the first inning, including a lead-off homer by Kole Calhoun. Things didn't get better for Gray as he allowed three runs in the third inning and another three runs before exiting in the fourth. Still looking for his first win of the year, the 28-year-old righty will face the Rangers at home Sunday.
Aug 5 2020Gray (0-1) was charged with four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings in a loss to the Giants on Wednesday. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of the damage was done in the fourth inning; a Trevor Story fielding error was followed by a Donovan Solano single and a Brandon Belt homer. It was the first homer given up by Gray this season, but he has just seven strikeouts in 16.1 innings. Hopefully he can dial his strikeout rate back up, because all of that contact in Coors Field is a losing formula. Gray gets two more at home next week (vs, ARI, vs. TEX).
Aug 1 2020Gray didn't factor into the decision in Friday's contest between the Rockies and the Padres. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while fanning two across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray's numbers have not impressed thus far, as he has given up three earned runs while walking four and fanning five in 10.1 innings across his first two starts. He will continue looking for his first win of the season in his next scheduled start, set for Aug. 5 at home against the Giants.
Jul 25 2020Gray didn't factor into the decision during Saturday's game between the Rockies and the Rangers. He allowed one run on three hits and three walks while fanning three across 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray didn't impress in the season opener and couldn't even complete five innings, as he departed the contest shortly after allowing a run on an RBI single from Shin-Soo Choo. Gray's next start is scheduled July 31 at home against the Padres.
Jul 20 2020Manager Bud Black said that Gray will start the Rockies' second game of the season Saturday in Texas, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray has actually fared slightly better at Coors Field (.319 wOBA) than on the road (.324) throughout his career, but fantasy managers in season-long leagues will still have reason to fear ratio damage any time he pitches at altitude. While no park factor data is available yet on the Rangers' new home, Globe Life Field, the fact that it has a retractable roof is expected to make it a more pitcher-friendly venue than its predecessor. At least in NL-only or deeper mixed leagues, Gray looks like a viable streaming option in his first start of 2020.
Mar 29 2020Gray allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout and zero walks over two innings during his only Cactus League appearance prior to the suspension of spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old underwent left foot surgery in August and had a delayed start to spring training, but he made his Cactus League debut March 1 and was on track to begin the regular season healthy. Gray had a 3.84 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 150:56 K:BB across 150 innings prior to the injury last season, and he has a solidified spot near the top of the Rockies' starting rotation once the season resumes.
Mar 1 2020Gray will make his Cactus League debut Monday against the Mariners, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old had a delayed start to spring training after undergoing left foot surgery in August, but his return to the mound Monday should put him on track for the start of the regular season. Gray was sharp in 2019 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 150:56 K:BB over 150 innings (25 starts).
Jan 10 2020Gray (foot) signed a one-year, $5.6 million contract with the Rockies on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gray turned in one of the best years of his young career in 2019, registering a 3.84 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 150 strikeouts over 150 frames. He'll begin the 2020 campaign near the front end of Colorado's starting rotation, assuming he's healthy. Gray underwent foot surgery in August but should be ready for spring training.
Aug 22 2019Gray will undergo surgery Friday to repair his fractured left foot, but he's expected to have a normal offseason, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Aug 21 2019Gray (foot) was placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday with a left foot fracture.
Aug 16 2019Gray (11-8) earned the win Friday after tossing eight shutout innings against the Marlins. He struck out seven and gave up five hits.
Aug 15 2019Gray (ankle) is listed as the Rockies' probable starter for Friday's game against the Marlins.
Aug 14 2019Gray (ankle) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday and could be ready to rejoin the rotation Friday against the Marlins, the Associated Press reports.
Aug 13 2019Gray will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks due to left ankle soreness, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Aug 8 2019Gray (10-8) took the loss against San Diego on Thursday, completing 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking

Jul 21 2018Gray will make his next start for the Rockies on Wednesday against the Astros at Coors Field, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Gray had been a candidate to take the hill for the series finale in Arizona on Sunday, but the Rockies ultimately decided to bring Antonio Senzatela off the 10-day disabled list to start that contest after Senzatela completed a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday without issue. It's a tough break for Gray, who will now miss out on a start in a more suppressed offensive environment in Arizona and exchange it for a matchup at altitude against one of the top offenses in the majors. Fantasy owners who scooped Gray up after he tossed 7.1 innings of one-run ball at home against the Mariners in his return to the big leagues July 14 may thus want to keep the right-hander on the bench for the time being.
Jul 14 2018Gray (8-7) allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out six across 7.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against the Mariners.Gray made his first big league start since June 28 and put together a tremendous effort, highlighted by 11 groundball outs. He also exhibited impressive control with 64 of his 93 pitches going for strikes while also starting 18 of the 27 batters he faced with a strike. While this hardly makes up for his struggles throughout the first half of the season, Gray should be a fixture in the Rockies' rotation after the All-Star break, giving him plenty of opportunity to improve on his 5.44 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.
Jun 30 2018Gray was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday. The move comes as something of a shock, as Gray was supposed to be the Rockies' ace. On the surface, there appears to be some logic to the decision, as Gray's ERA stands at an ugly 5.77 on the year. The underlying numbers don't support the notion that Gray is struggling though, as he's posted an excellent 28.9 percent strikeout rate and a solid 7.0 percent walk rate. His FIP is 3.07 while his xFIP is a stellar 2.77. His high ERA is attributable in part to an inflated .386 BABIP and a low 63.1 percent strand rate. The Rockies, however, were unwilling to let regression take its course, though it would hardly be surprising to see Gray up and successful again later in the year. Raimel Tapia was promoted in a corresponding move.
Jun 28 2018Gray threw four innings on Thursday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks in Thursday's 9-8. He struck out seven and allowed a home run while not factoring in to the decision. After allowing just one run in his last outing, Gray got rocked once again. His season ERA spiked to 5.77 in 92 innings, but he has 119 strikeouts as well. He's allowed three or more runs in eight of his last nine outings. Gray will get another shot at the Giants next Tuesday.
Jun 22 2018Gray (7-7) got the win against the Marlins on Friday, scattering eights hits and one earned run over seven innings, striking out 12 without walking a batter in an 11-3 victory for the Rockies. It was a dominant effort from the 26-year-old right-hander, who has been absolutely stacking the strikeouts lately with this 12-punchout performance giving him an obscene 31:5 K:BB over his last three starts. He gave up nine earned runs over his last two outings, however, and he would need more starts like this one to hack away at his 5.52 ERA and 1.45 WHIP - numbers that have hampered his ability to make a sustained fantasy impact despite his lofty strikeout totals. He'll look to build off this strong effort in his next start, which will come next Thursday against the Giants.
Jun 17 2018Gray allowed six runs (five earned) in five-plus innings Sunday, striking out nine while yielding six hits and a walk in a 13-12 loss to Texas.Gray was solid through five innings on the afternoon, allowing just one run and striking out nine. Things unraveled in the sixth though, as Gray gave up five runs without recording an out, including a three-run blast by Jurickson Profar that would be the nail in the coffin on his start. The 26-year-old's already-ugly ERA rose up to 5.89 and he's allowed three or more earned runs in his last seven starts. He'll look to turn things around against Miami next Friday.
Jun 13 2018Gray (6-7) allowed four runs on three hits and four walks across six innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Phillies. He struck out 10.Gray struggled with his command in this one, throwing just 57 percent of his pitches for strikes as he set a new season high in walks. That came back to bite him early on as a pair of first inning free passes proceeded a three-run home run by Scott Kingery. Wildness aside, Gray did well to regain his composure after a poor opening frame and racked up double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season. Punchouts are his only real source of fantasy value at the moment, with his 10.8 K/9 coming alongside a hefty 5.68 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP.
Jun 6 2018Gray (6-6) got the win in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the Reds, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings while striking out five. The 26-year-old didn't exactly rebound from his recent poor form, walking three batters for the third straight start and giving up at least three runs for the fifth straight, but the Rockies' offense was still able to carry Gray to the win. He'll take a 5.66 ERA into his next outing Tuesday in Philadelphia.
May 30 2018Gray lasted just 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits and three walks despite five strikeouts in a no-decision Wednesday against the Giants.Gray collapsed in the fourth inning, as he walked three batters interrupted only by a successful sacrifice bunt by Giants starter Derek Holland. His final line could have been much worse, as he left the bases loaded upon his departure, but Harrison Musgrave managed to induce a double play to get out of the jam. Gray has been struggling mightily of late, as he has allowed 22 runs over his past four starts and failed to complete the fourth inning twice. He'll try to turn things around Wednesday against the Reds.
May 25 2018Gray (5-6) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings in a win over the Reds on Friday. He got off to a rocky start, loading the bases and allowing two runs to score in the first inning. Gray then served up a two-run homer in the third before closing his night with three scoreless frames. The 26-year-old now has a 71:16 K:BB in 61.2 innings this season, but even Gray isn't immune from the Coors Field effect. A home start against the Giants is next on the docket.
May 19 2018Gray (4-6) allowed five runs over 3.2 innings against the Giants to take the loss. He surrendered five hits and one walk while striking out four.It was another tough outing from Gray, whose ERA now sits at a bloated 5.34. He's given up five or more runs in five of his 10 starts. The particularly frustrating part of Gray's struggles is that his peripherals have been strong for the most part. He's averaging 95 on his fastball and entered Saturday with a 10.2 K/9 along with a 2.08 BB/9. Gray's will have a chance to sort things out Friday when he takes the hill against the Reds.
May 13 2018Gray gave up six earned runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out 10 in 5.1 innings Sunday against the Brewers. He took the loss. This is the danger with starting any Rockies pitcher at home, even their ace, as Gray now has a 5.09 ERA and .278 batting average against in 23 innings through four home starts this season. He also boasts 26 strikeouts over that span, so at least his owners can bank on help in one category when he takes the ball in Coors Field. Gray will start in San Francisco on Saturday, which is a must-start in most formats.
May 8 2018Gray (4-4) earned the win Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts while allowing four hits and a walk against the Angels.Gray was in total command all night, inducing 14 swings and misses while recording 11 ground ball outs versus just two via fly balls. The 26-year-old endured a rocky start to the season, but he's finally starting to round back into form. Over his last three starts, Gray is posting a 25:3 K:BB and has allowed just one run over 20 innings en route to earning the win in all three. He'll look to keep rolling when he next takes the hill Sunday against the Brewers.
May 1 2018Gray (3-4) allowed one earned run on three hits while walking one and striking out six across seven innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Cubs.Gray used his fastball and slider effectively, generating 10 swinging strikes on 79 pitches and allowing only three hits on 13 balls in play between the two pitches. After a rough three-start stretch during which he allowed 18 earned runs in 15.2 innings, he has thrown two gems in a row. Though he hadn't shown drastic splits at home versus on the road in past seasons, he has allowed 13 of his 22 earned runs at home to begin the season, despite making one fewer start there.
Apr 25 2018Gray (2-4) picked up the win over the Padres on Wednesday, allowing three hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out 11.After coughing up 18 runs in 15.2 innings over his last three starts, Gray roared back with his best start yet in 2018. The right-hander threw 65 of 101 pitches for strikes and generated a massive 23 swinging strikes, which after the game he credited to a change in the grip on his slider. Gray will next take the mound Tuesday on the road against the Cubs.
Apr 20 2018Gray (1-4) gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out just one and walking three, picking up the loss in Colorado's 16-5 defeat to the Cubs on Friday. After an encouraging start to the season that saw him give up three earned runs over his first 11 innings, Gray has now given up at least five runs in each of his last three outings to bring his ERA up to 6.75 in 26.2 innings. He's a risky fantasy play until he shows signs of re-establishing his form of last year when he put up a respectable 3.67 ERA in 110.1 innings - and the fact that he pitches his home games at hitter-friendly Coors Field doesn't help his dimming fantasy prospects.
Apr 14 2018Gray (1-3) allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six in 5.2 innings pitched en route to the loss Saturday against the Nationals.Although his stat line doesn't show it, Gray pitched well Saturday. He only allowed one run through five innings (a Matt Wieters home run in the fourth), but the wheels fell off in the fifth due to a number of two-strike hits by Washington hitters. Nonetheless, Gray now holds an unsightly 6.23 ERA on the season, a number which he'll look to improve upon in his next start Friday against the Cubs.
Apr 9 2018Gray (1-2) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and one walk across five innings while earning the loss Monday against the Padres. He struck out six.Gray escaped some early trouble with just one run against, but an RBI double and a pair of home runs in the fourth inning took that tally to six. He allowed another run before completing the fifth in what was a disappointing performance against a team he dominated last week. Gray has sandwiched poor starts around one strong outing so far and will take a 5.63 ERA into Saturday's scheduled start against the Nationals.
Apr 5 2018Gray (1-1) picked up the win over the Padres on Wednesday, striking out seven over seven scoreless innings while scattering four hits. The right-hander threw 63 of 93 pitches for strikes, and San Diego didn't even get a runner into scoring position until Cory Spangenberg led off the fifth inning with a double. Gray's off to a fast start to the season with a 2.45 ERA and 11:3 K:BB through his first 11 innings, but things could get a little more challenging Monday when he makes his first home start in a rematch with the Padres.
Mar 29 2018Gray (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Thursday. This is how Gray's night began: single, single, walk, double, mound visit. He settled down from there, but the damage was done. Gray has posted exciting strikeout rates since breaking into the league in 2015 (career 9.5 K/9), and he has a more favorable road matchup on tap next (at San Diego). There's no reason to abandon ship after one shaky outing.
Mar 27 2018Gray was officially named the Rockies' Opening Day starter Tuesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. It's hardly an unexpected move, as Gray is clearly the best starter on the Rockies. The 26-year-old managed a 3.67 ERA and a 3.18 FIP in 20 starts last season despite eight of those coming in the worst park in the league for pitchers. He actually managed a better ERA at home (3.13) last year than on the road (4.06). Even if Coors Field inflates his ERA somewhat this year, his 24.3 percent strikeout rate makes him a solid option in most formats.
Mar 10 2018Gray has allowed nine earned runs on 13 hits in 8.1 innings pitched this spring.Health issues aside, the Rockies' ace took major strides as a starter last season, producing a 3.67 ERA in 20 starts. He even found success at the hitter-friendly Coors Field, sporting a 3.13 home ERA by season's end while allowing just four homers on the season in Denver. Gray is getting shelled this spring, but it's likely a result of some mechanical tweaks he's making. Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports that Gray is adjusting the grip on his changeup and experimenting with different windups this spring, albeit without the results one would hope for. At this point, the young right-hander seems to be more focused on adding to his repertoire and seeing what works and what isn't. If he can command his altered offering by the end of spring training, that could be a boon to his value.
Oct 1 2017Manager Bud Black officially announced Sunday that Gray will start Wednesday's N.L. Wild Card game against the Diamondbacks, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. This announcement doesn't come as much of a surprise, as Gray was clearly the Rockies' best starter during the regular season. The 25-year-old compiled a 10-4 record while posting a 3.67 ERA (3.17 FIP) and 24.3 percent strikeout rate over 110.1 innings pitched. He'll face a tough test against a potent Diamondbacks' lineup in hitter-friendly Chase Field.
Sep 27 2017Gray (10-4) allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five batters through six innings to take the win against Miami on Wednesday.Gray has now won four of his past five starts and has worked himself down to a 3.67 ERA and 1.30 WHIP for the campaign. Alongside his 9.1 K/9, Gray has turned in a solid campaign considering he missed approximately a month and a half with a foot injury and calls Coors Field home. Pitching in a hitter-friendly home park will always cap his fantasy upside, but Gray's strong stretch to finish the regular season has showcased why he was the third overall selection in the 2013 Amateur Draft.
Sep 23 2017Gray (9-4) picked up the win over the Padres on Friday, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over six innings while striking out eight. He extended his streak of starts in which he's given up three runs or fewer to 12, and Gray's 2.49 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 75:16 K:BB in 72.1 innings over that stretch are the kind of ace-like numbers the Rockies were hoping for when they drafted the right-hander in the first round back in 2013. He'll make one more trip to the mound in the regular season Wednesday at home against the Marlins.
Sep 17 2017Gray allowed two hits over five innings while walking one and striking out seven in a 4-3 loss to the visiting Padres. He didn't allow a run or factor into the decision.Gray pitched well enough to deserve his ninth win of the year, but the Rockies' bullpen imploded behind him. As such, his record remains at 8-4 and he remains two wins shy of his career-high 10 set last year. Most importantly, his 3.75 ERA is significantly better than his career mark of 3.75, making him a serviceable fantasy asset in all but the shallowest of leagues.
Sep 12 2017Gray (8-4) allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out 10 without a walk over seven strong innings to earn the win Tuesday in Arizona.Backed by a pair of Carlos Gonzalez two-run homers, Gray pitched like the ace of Colorado's staff in this NL West rivalry game with Wild Card implications. The 25-year-old righty tied his season high in both strikeouts and innings pitched while issuing zero free passes for only the second time in 17 starts. Look for him to build on this effort at home Sunday against the league-worst Padres offense.
Sep 7 2017Gray (7-4) earned the win over the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three. The Rockies' offense got to Clayton Kershaw early, staking Gray to a three-run lead before he even took the mound. Gray gave up a pair of doubles in the fourth inning but scattered just two singles (one of the infield variety) in his other five frames. He has been pitching well since his eight-run implosion back on July 19 and he lines up for two starts next week, but one of those comes against the red-hot Diamondbacks in Arizona. Proceed with caution.
Sep 2 2017Gray (6-4) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings in a losing effort against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. All three runs against Gray were plated on one swing from J.D. Martinez in the first inning. He settled down from there, allowing just two hits over his final four frames, but the damage was already done. Gray has been pitching well lately -- he had a 2.58 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in his last six starts entering play Saturday -- but the right-hander is still best utilized as a road streamer in mixed leagues.
Aug 27 2017Gray (6-3) walked two batters, struck out seven, and allowed five hits over six shutout innings in Sunday's win over the Braves.Gray turned in another solid outing and picked up his sixth win of the year Sunday. Gray has now made three consecutive quality starts, over which he's collectively allowed four earned runs and fanned 19 batters across 18.2 innings. He should return to the hill Saturday when the Rockies take on the Diamondbacks.
Aug 23 2017Gray (5-3) fell to the Royals on Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out six.The right-hander delivered his fourth quality start in his last five trips to the mound, but other than Nolan Arenado the Rockies hitters couldn't solve Danny Duffy, saddling Gray with his first loss in August. He's now got a 3.53 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 41:9 K:BB in his last seven outings (43.1 innings), making him a solid fantasy option heading into Sunday's road start in Atlanta.
Aug 16 2017Gray (5-2) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks through six innings to earn the win over the Braves on Wednesday. He struck out six.Gray didn't have to do much to get in the win column, as the Rockies put up 14 runs through the first five innings, but he still managed to toss his third quality start over his last four tries. He's been rock solid since giving up eight runs to the Mets right after the All-Star break, registering a 3.72 ERA and 35:8 K:BB across six starts (36.1 innings). He'll look to keep things rolling when he toes the rubber next against the Royals on Tuesday.
Aug 11 2017Gray gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Friday while striking out four, but had to settle for a no-decision in a 6-3 loss to the Marlins. The right-hander seemed to have the game well in hand early, taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but he couldn't hang on for the quality start once Miami's bats got rolling. Gray continues to do a good job controlling the strike zone, posting a 29:6 K:BB in 30.2 innings over his last five outings to go along with a 3.81 ERA. He'll next take the mound Wednesday at home against the Braves.
Aug 5 2017Gray (4-2) allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out four over seven innings in Saturday's win against the Phillies.Gray retired the first seven batters he faced and cruised without much difficulty from there, surrendering his only run when Nick Williams grounded into an RBI double play in the fourth inning. The right-hander has been pleasantly efficient over his last three outings, posting a 2.84 ERA and an 18:2 K:BB in that stretch, so he looks to be back in full form after missing nearly two months with a foot injury. Despite his unimpressive 4.94 ERA this season, there's little doubt Gray is the ace of the Colorado rotation and will have a full week before his next scheduled start, Saturday against the Marlins.
Jul 30 2017Gray tossed seven innings of four-hit, three-run ball in a 3-1 loss to Washington on Sunday. He struck out eight and walked one.Gray did rather well in keeping the high-powered Nationals bats in check in this one, but he was ultimately done in by a two-run homer by Adam Lind in the fifth inning. He's recorded a solid 3:21 BB:K over his last three starts -- a span of 18 innings -- as he continues to hold his own as the Rockies' de facto No. 1 starter.
Jul 25 2017Gray allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out six Cardinals over five innings in a no-decision Tuesday. He gave up a two-run homer to Paul DeJong in the first inning, but Gray settled in nicely after that, keeping the Cards off the board until he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth. Unfortunately for Gray and his fantasy owners, he needed 96 pitches to get through those five frames, and efficiency has not exactly been his calling card this year. However, the strikeout rate is strong and it's great to see him avoid walking a batter in this one. Gray is a funny case for fantasy purposes -- his 3.63 FIP points to vast potential for improvement from his current 5.84 ERA, which is largely attributable to an absurd .400 BABIP, but he also has the misfortune of pitching his home games at Coors Field. He may have posted a better ERA at home than on the road last season (4.30 to 4.91), but that's something you can count on continuing. With a couple off days coming up, Gray may not make his next start until next Tuesday at home against the Mets.
Jul 19 2017Gray (3-1) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven batters through six innings during Wednesday's win over San Diego.Gray cruised through the first five frames without allowing a run before the Friars got to him in the sixth. Holding an opponent to four runs through six innings at Coors Field qualifies as a solid outing, and Gray also sported a 13-run lead entering the sixth, so it was essentially mop-up duty at that point of the game. Gray's fantasy upside is capped by his hitter-friendly home park, but his 9.0 K/9 makes him an intriguing asset for road starts. A date with the Cardinals at Busch Stadium is up next for the 25-year-old righty.
Jul 14 2017Gray (2-1) surrendered eight runs on nine hits and three walks over just two-plus innings in Friday's 14-2 loss to the Mets. He struck out one.It may look like the line from a Rockies home game, but the right-hander's troubles came in Citi Field this time as the first six New York batters in the third inning all reached base and scored, and all on Gray's ledger. The ugly outing sent his ERA soaring from 3.75 to 6.23, but his 25:12 K:BB through 26 innings since coming off the DL at the end of June offers hope that he'll be able to shave it back down again.
Jul 6 2017Gray (2-0) gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Reds. He struck out five.It wasn't the sharpest outing for the 25-year-old, but he threw 68 of 108 pitches for strikes and opened the scoring by blasting a 467-foot, two-run homer off Scott Feldman in the second inning. Gray missed two-and-a-half months of the season with a stress fracture in his left foot, but his 15:2 K:BB in 11.2 innings since his return from the DL suggests he should be able to put together a strong second half.
Jun 30 2017Gray (foot) was activated from the disabled list prior to his start Friday against the Diamondbacks, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.Gray has been out since mid-April while dealing with a left big toe injury. The right-hander is ready to make his return for Friday's series opener after tossing 13 innings (three appearances) of rehab work over the course of the last two weeks. It wouldn't come as a shock if the Rockies monitored Gray's pitch count, especially after only going five innings during his longest rehab appearance.
Jun 30 2017Gray (1-0) allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk and struck out 10 over six innings in the victory Friday against Arizona.Gray made his return from the disabled list, where he had been with a foot injury since April 13. Despite the layoff, Gray looked exceptionally sharp. He lasted 102 pitches, including a ridiculous 17 swinging strikes. Gray struck out 185 batters in just 168 innings last season and showed the nasty stuff he exhibited in 2016 hasn't gone anywhere despite the injury.
Jun 26 2017Gray (foot) is scheduled to return from the disabled list and start Friday against the Diamondbacks, the Denver Post reports.Gray managed just three appearances before the foot injury sent him to the disabled list, so it's hard to make much of a judgement off what we've seen from him in 2017. Gray's 4.61 ERA in 2016 wasn't impressive, but his 185 strikeouts in 168 innings were, and if he still has that kind of electric stuff, his fantasy stock will be well worth watching going forward.
Jun 21 2017Gray (foot) will make one more rehab appearance Saturday before returning to the Rockies next week, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. This will be the third rehab start for the right-hander, who has struck out 12 and allowed five runs (one earned) over eight innings in his first two outings. Gray only started three games this season before suffering the stress fracture in his left foot, racking up an ERA of 4.38 in 12.1 innings pitched after posting an ERA of 4.61 in 29 starts last season.
Jun 20 2017Gray (foot) threw 74 pitches in Monday's rehab start with Triple-A Albuquerque, giving up five runs (one earned) while striking out seven in 4.1 innings pitched. It was less than exciting to see Gray serve up two home runs against Triple-A hitters, but the seven strikeouts certainly suggest that the Rockies' ace is nearly back to his previous form. He's expected to make one more rehab start before returning to the Rockies' rotation, meaning that he could be back in full just before the end of the month.
Jun 15 2017Gray (foot) allowed four hits over four scoreless innings in his first rehab start with High-A Lancaster on Wednesday. He struck out five batters and issued one walk. Two months to the day after his placement on the DL with a stress fracture in his foot, Gray was back on the bump in a competitive setting, firing 55 pitches against minor-league hitters. He will presumably need to build up to at least 80 or 90 pitches, meaning Gray will likely need at least two additional rehab starts to prepare for a return to the major-league rotation. Gray turned in a 4.61 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 185 strikeouts in 168 innings as a 24-year-old last season.
Jun 10 2017Gray (foot) will make his first rehab start Wednesday with High-A Lancaster, Patrick Saunders of MLB.com reports.Gray recently threw 36 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday while also fielding groundballs and throwing to bases during his rehab. The right-hander has been out for almost two months now, and will likely participate in two or three rehab starts until his arrival in Colorado.
Jun 6 2017Gray (foot) threw 36 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday and expects to throw another simulated game prior to embarking on a rehab assignment, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.Harding also reports that Gray fielded groundballs and threw to bases, which bodes well for the health of his foot. However, the Rockies' ace said that he anticipates needing two rehab starts before returning, although the team may require three. This pushes his return date to the end of the month, which would ultimately culminate in over a two-month absence due to the issue. A firm timetable hasn't been released as of now, but don't expect Gray to return to the rotation for another couple weeks.
Jun 6 2017Gray (foot) will throw a simulated game Tuesday, MLB Network Radio reports. After completing a 41-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Gray is ready to face hitters, and appears on the verge of heading out on a rehab assignment. His arm is fine, it's just a matter of making sure he is fully recovered from a stress fracture in his left foot that has sidelined him for almost two months. Gray has as much strikeout upside as any pitcher who is not widely considered an SP1, it is just a matter of him limiting baserunners and navigating his home starts in the unfriendly confines at Coors Field.
Jun 4 2017Gray (foot) completed a 41-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. "Everything on the mound feels great," Gray said after the session. "I hadn't gripped a changeup in two weeks. And I threw two of them [Saturday] and they were the best I'd ever thrown."Gray has been out since mid April with a stress fracture in his left foot that confined him to a walking boot for nearly six weeks, but now that he's been cleared to get back on the mound, it may not take long before the right-hander rejoins the Rockies rotation. His side session went about as well as the Rockies could have hoped, as Gray was able to use his full arsenal Saturday and felt he commanded his pitches well. Gray is expected to face hitters in the coming days before advancing to a rehab assignment.
Jun 2 2017Gray (foot) ran on the field Wednesday before Colorado's game with the Mariners, and he's scheduled to face hitters in a simulated game sometime next week, Nick Groke of The Denver Post reports. The right-hander also has been running on a treadmill, but he'll soon ramp up his workouts, facing live batters during the Rockies' two-game home series with the Indians that starts Tuesday. When Gray returns -- likely before the end of June --
May 31 2017Gray (foot) threw a bullpen session without a walking boot over the weekend. This is a big development for Gray, as it's the first time he's been allowed to do anything without the boot since injuring his foot. He's expected to go through fielding drills in the coming days, after which a timetable for his return to facing hitters should become clearer.
May 26 2017Gray (foot) hopes to pitch a bullpen session over the weekend without his walking boot, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. The young ace has been firing bullpen sessions for a few weeks now despite being shackled to a walking boot, but it seems like his foot is nearly ready to be set free. As long as everything goes well with the upcoming bullpen sessions, Gray will likely move on to making at least three rehab starts prior to returning to the rotation. He's currently expected to be out for another two and a half weeks, but a firmer timetable for his return should emerge once he embarks on his rehab assignment.
May 23 2017Manager Bud Black estimated that Gray (foot) was "three weeks away from pitching for {the Rockies}" on Tuesday, Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio reports. This means that Gray is a bit behind the original timetable the team offered for his return, but at least a firmer timetable for his return is on the table at this point. The last update on the right-hander's status was that he was throwing bullpen sessions despite still being in a walking boot, but this timeframe suggests that Gray could be heading out on a rehab assignment in the next week or two. More information should come forth once he progresses further in his rehab process.
May 17 2017Gray (toe) has been throwing bullpen sessions while wearing his walking boot, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.Of course, there's only so much one can do while wearing a walking boot, but Gray is doing everything possible to be ready as soon as possible. He'll likely need some rehab starts in order to get completely back to form and currently sits without a firm return date, but it seems like a return to the rotation is on the horizon.
Sep 2 2014Gray (shoulder) is unlikely to pitch again this season, the Denver Post reports.Fatigue has set in on Gray's shoulder after he tossed 124.1 innings for Double-A Tulsa, and the 22-year-old will not be called up by the Rockies to make his major league debut this season. The report notes that there's an outside chance Gray could pitch for Tulsa should the team advance to the second round of the playoffs, but in all likelihood, he'll remain shut down for the foreseeable future. Trainer Keith Dugger said that Gray's shoulder is fine and that the team is just being cautious with its top pitching prospect.
Jul 20 2014Gray is not considered an option to fill the void in the Rockies' rotation for Tuesday's tilt with the Nationals, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. The Colorado rotation is in utter shambles right now, and with the team destined to miss the postseason yet again, there's little incentive to bring up Gray at this time. Manager Walt Weiss maintained that Gray is "in the picture" for a call-up this season, but a promotion might not come until September, when the Rockies will more seriously assess their rotation options for 2015. Gray has pitched better of late to lower his ERA to 3.54 on the season at Tulsa, but hasn't dominated enough to force the Rockies' hand.
Jun 5 2014Gray could merit consideration for a promotion to the Rockies in light of the broken hand suffered by starter Jordan Lyles in Wednesday's game, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports. The Rockies announced after Wednesday's game that Lyles would require a trip to the disabled list, where he'll join fellow starters Tyler Chatwood and Brett Anderson. Those injuries -- along with the ineffectiveness of Jhoulys Chacin and the Franklin Morales -- has already forced the Rockies to call up one of their top pitching prospects in Eddie Butler, and there's a chance Gray could be next in line. The third overall selection in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, Gray was considered one of the more polished pitchers of that class, and has generally dominated during his time in the minors thus far. However, he was touched up for eight runs over 5.1 innings in his most recent outing, which may make the Rockies reluctant to bring him up until later in the season. If that's the case, look for Triple-A Colorado Springs hurler Tyler Matzek to get the first crack at replacing Lyles in the rotation.
Apr 23 2014Gray retired the first 17 batters he faced Wednesday, but ended up losing the game, allowing one run on three hits in six innings for Double-A Tulsa. He encountered trouble in the sixth inning after a dominant start to the game. Of his 92 pitches, 66 were strikes and his command was excellent, as he didn't issue any free passes. After a rough start to the season in Double-A, the Rockies' top prospect has rebounded, and now has a 4.91 ERA in 18.1 innings, with a 19-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Mar 15 2014The Rockies assigned Gray to minor league camp Saturday, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports.Gray spent camp with the big club to gain some experience against major leaguers, but he did not have a real shot at a roster spot given that he has never pitched above the High-A level. Gray was a three-year college pitcher, and is considered the Rockies' best pitching prospect, so though he will not break camp with the big club, he will have a chance to reach the majors at some point this season.
Mar 4 2014Gray threw two scoreless innings in his spring training debut Monday against the Mariners. He scattered two hits and a walk and struck out two batters. The Rockies' top prospect has been as good as advertised in the early stages of his first big league camp, with Mariners hitters proving incapable of catching up to his fastball in Monday's outing. Although his control was slightly below par throughout the afternoon, Gray still possesses all the skills to become a frontline starter for the Rockies perhaps as soon as next season.
Feb 4 2014Gray has been invited to attend major league camp during spring training, MLB.com reports.Gray, the third overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft, just completed his first season of professional baseball. He went 4-0 with a minuscule 0.75 ERA and a 13.5 K/9 after moving up to High-A Modesto, so while his invitation to spring training is more about experience, it will be interesting to see how the right-hander fares in his first exposure to advanced hitters.
Jun 12 2013The Rockies and Gray agreed to terms on a contract, the Rockies' Official Page reports. The terms of the contact have yet to be disclosed, but it is rumored to be in the $5 million range. Gray - the third pick in the 2013 Draft - can touch 101 MPH with his fastball. He is expected to be on the fast track to the majors with the Rockies having a need for pitching.
Jun 6 2013The Rockies selected Gray with the third overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.Gray is a power righty with a huge frame at 6-foot-4, 240-lbs. He possesses a blazing fastball along with an emerging slider, though his command needs some work. Still, he has perhaps the highest ceiling of any player in this draft.
