Feb 17 2024Choi signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi slashed .163/.239/.385 with 13 RBI across 117 major-league plate appearances with the Pirates and Padres last season -- his worst numbers at the plate since 2016. Now with New York, Choi's best chance at making the Opening Day roster is as the team's designated hitter, but he will have to earn it with a strong showing in the Grapefruit League.
Oct 1 2023Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has a .377 OPS in 37 plate appearances since being acquired by the Padres and will hit the bench for the final game of the season. He's in his final year of arbitration eligibility and will be a free agent this winter.
Sep 29 2023Choi isn't in the Padres' lineup Friday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi still has yet to record a hit through 14 games with the Padres, and his offensive struggles will keep him out of the lineup Friday. Garrett Cooper will start at first base and bat sixth.
Sep 27 2023Choi is absent from the lineup Wednesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Garrett Cooper will start at first base and bat sixth as the Padres roll out a righty-heavy attack versus Giants left-hander Sean Manaea. Choi remains hitless in 33 plate appearances with San Diego and carries a .125/.211/.313 slash line versus lefties this year.
Sep 24 2023Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is hitless in 20 at-bats since being acquired by San Diego, and he'll sit Sunday with southpaw Drew Rom on the mound for St. Louis. Garrett Cooper will start at first base and bat sixth.
Sep 17 2023Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday, but he'll end up starting just one of the three games in the series since Oakland is using a pair of lefties, including Ken Waldichuk as the bulk pitcher Sunday. Manny Machado will serve as the designated hitter while Eguy Rosario starts at the hot corner.
Sep 15 2023The Padres reinstated Choi (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi initially landed on the injured list Aug. 14 due to a left rib strain, but his stay was extended after he suffered a fractured ankle during a rehab game at Triple-A El Paso. Fortunately for the Padres, Choi was cleared to resume playing relatively quickly, and he will return to San Diego after going 4-for-25 with an RBI and a run scored through seven rehab games. Matt Carpenter (elbow) was placed on the 10-day IL in a corresponding move.
Sep 13 2023Choi (foot/rib) resumed his rehab assignment at Triple-A El Paso on Friday after a two-day shutdown and has gone 2-for-13 with three walks against four strikeouts while playing in games in four of the past five days. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was placed on the 10-day injured list Aug. 14 with a left rib cage strain and was cleared to resume a rehab assignment Sept. 5, only to suffer what Padres manager Bob Melvin said what was a fractured ankle in his first game with El Paso, per Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Given the nature of the injury, Choi was presumed to be shut down for the season, but he was cleared to play two days later for El Paso, and his fractured ankle has since been reclassified as a right Lisfranc foot injury, according to MLB.com. Choi has made three starts at designated hitter and one at first base since resuming his rehab assignment, and once activated from the IL, he'll likely share work at both spots with Garrett Cooper while the Padres are without Jake Cronenworth (wrist) for the foreseeable future.
Sep 6 2023Choi (ribs) fractured his ankle while playing in a rehab game with Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was playing in his first rehab game with El Paso while working his way back from a rib injury he suffered in mid-August. Now that he's dealing with a fractured ankle with less than a month left in the season, Choi will likely be held out of action until 2024. He'll finish 2023 with a .179/.239/.440 slash line across 92 plate appearances between the Pirates and Padres.
Sep 5 2023Choi (ribs) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A El Paso. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will serve as El Paso's designated hitter and bat third in his rehab debut against the Triple-A affiliate of the Rangers. Out since Aug. 14 due to a left rib strain, Choi could potentially return to the Padres sometime this weekend if all goes well on the farm.
Aug 31 2023Choi (ribs) has begun a swinging progression, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi landed on the injured list two weeks ago with a left rib strain but is starting to ramp things back up. He could be back by mid-September if all goes well and would figure to share first base and designated hitter duties with Garrett Cooper once ready.
Aug 14 2023Choi will be placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left rib strain, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi did not start either Saturday or Sunday, and it is now evident that his absence was related to injury and not performance. Garrett Cooper gets the start at designated hitter in his place.
Aug 13 2023Choi isn't starting Sunday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's recent offensive struggles have made the Padres more willing to use other players from their lineup in the DH spot, which is exactly what they will do Sunday. Xander Bogaerts will serve as San Diego's designated hitter, moving Ha-Seong Kim to shortstop, Jake Cronenworth to second and Garrett Cooper in at first base.
Aug 12 2023Choi isn't in the Padres' lineup Saturday against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi hasn't collected a hit (0-for-12) since July 29, so he'll miss out on a start Saturday. Fernando Tatis will step in as the Padres' DH, allowing Jose Azocar to start in right field and bat eighth.
Aug 8 2023Choi isn't in the Padres' lineup Tuesday against Seattle, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has yet to record a hit through four games (11 plate appearances) as a Padre, so he'll get a day off Tuesday to regroup. Jake Cronenworth will start at first base and Garrett Cooper will serve as San Diego's designated hitter while Choi sits.
Aug 7 2023Choi is starting at first base and batting seventh in Monday's contest versus the Dodgers, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manny Machado is getting another designated hitter day as he nurses a tight hamstring, so Ha-Seong Kim slides to third base, Jake Cronenworth plays second base Choi handles first. It's the fourth straight start for Choi, who served as the Padres' DH in the other two contests.
Aug 1 2023The Pirates traded Choi and Rich Hill to the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for Alfonso Rivas, Jackson Wolf and Estuar Suero, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: San Diego has been giving regular starts at DH to the backup catcher (Luis Campusano) since letting Nelson Cruz go, and Choi will provide an upgrade versus right-handed pitching. While Choi has mostly struggled this season, he is a career .246/.351/.459 hitter against right-handers.
Jul 30 2023Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Carlos Santana having been traded to the Brewers on Thursday, Choi has settled in as the Pirates' primary option at first base, starting each of the last three games at the position while going 4-for-12 with a home run, two doubles and an additional run and RBI. Though Connor Joe will get the nod at first base Sunday while southpaw Cristopher Sanchez takes the hill for Philadelphia, the lefty-hitting Choi should be fairly secure in a strong-side platoon role.
Jul 21 2023Choi went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-5 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has homered three times in his last seven games while going 6-for-19 (.316) in that span. The warm bat has helped Choi remain in the mix for playing time between first base and designated hitter. Carlos Santana and Andrew McCutchen are also involved in that playing time battle with two spots available for the three players. Choi is at a .186/.210/.475 slash line with five homers, nine RBI, seven runs scored and two doubles over 62 plate appearances this season.
Jul 14 2023Choi went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Friday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi belted his fourth home run of the season and second in as many games when he took Ross Stripling deep in fifth inning. He's had a regular starting role since returning from the injured list July 7, and he's taken advantage by going 4-for-15 with a double in addition to his two long balls. However, he's at significant risk of losing playing time as early as Sunday, as Andrew McCutchen (elbow) is expected to return and will almost certainly resume his duties as the team's primary designated hitter.
Jul 9 2023Choi went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Sunday's win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi launched a two-run shot in the second inning for his third homer of the season. He was activated from the 60-day injured list Friday and went 3-for-12 during the weekend series against the Diamondbacks. Choi is slashing .159/.159/.409 this season but he's seen just 44 plate appearances after missing nearly three months of action.
Jul 7 2023Pittsburgh activated Choi (Achilles) from the 60-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is finally recovered from the left Achilles strain that has kept him out since mid-April, just in time to serve as a DH option for the Pirates as Andrew McCutchen (elbow) heads to the 10-day IL. Choi went 10-for-31 (.323) with three homers and nine RBI on his nine-game minor league rehab assignment between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jun 25 2023Choi (Achilles) will continue his rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis this week, Jarrod Prugar of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi began a rehab assignment at Double-A Altoona this week and went 1-for-5 with a double and a strikeout over two games. Assuming he feels good after making some appearances with the Triple-A club, he'll likely be in the mix to return from the injured list late this week.
Jun 22 2023Choi (Achilles) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Altoona on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Thursday will be Choi's first taste of game action since landing on the injured list April 15 with a left Achilles strain. The Pirates haven't indicated how long they plan on keeping Choi in the minors, but a return before the end of June could be possible.
May 31 2023Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Choi (Achilles) is participating in "about all" baseball activities in his rehab, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was able to start fielding grounders last week as he recovers from his left Achilles strain, and he's since been able to ramp up his activities even more, with Tomczyk also mentioning that the 32-year-old has started a running progression, per Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The veteran first baseman was transferred to the 60-day injured list in April, so the earliest he'll be able to return to the Pittsburgh lineup is around mid-June.
May 23 2023Choi (Achilles) fielded grounders from his knees Tuesday in Pittsburgh, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is easing back into baseball activities five weeks after being placed on the 10-day injured list because of a left Achilles strain. He was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL and probably won't be ready to return to the Pirates' active roster until late June or early July.
May 17 2023Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Choi (Achilles) has resumed light baseball activities, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is about four weeks into an estimated eight-week recovery timetable until he's cleared to take part in full baseball activities, but he's able to do a little light hitting and throwing now. He may not be ready for game action until late June or early July while he works his way back from a left Achilles injury.
Apr 5 2023Choi will sit Wednesday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a breather after he started the first two games of the series in Boston, going 1-for-7 with a run scored and two strikeouts in those contests. Andrew McCutchen will take over as the designated hitter while Jack Suwinski starts in right field and bats sixth in the series finale.
Mar 2 2023Choi (elbow) will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth against the Yankees on Thursday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old will be making his first start of the spring and his Pirates debut after undergoing surgery in November to remove a bone fragment from his right elbow. Choi was traded in the offseason after slashing .233/.341/.388 with 11 homers in 113 games with the Rays last season. Health permitting, he should start against most right-handed pitchers to begin 2023.
Feb 22 2023The Pirates announced Wednesday that Choi will be on a modified program for spring training while he ramps up from the surgery he underwent in November to remove a bone fragment from his right elbow, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Choi has experienced no unexpected setbacks in his recovery from the elbow procedure, the Pirates seem content to slowly integrate him into drills to ensure he's in optimal health by the time Opening Day arrives. Because of his elbow surgery, however, the Korea Baseball Organization chose to remove Choi from its 30-man roster for the World Baseball Classic earlier this month, despite the 31-year-old expressing confidence that he was healthy enough to play. Choi should still be able to get in plenty of at-bats during the Pirates' Grapefruit League schedule, though he may not be ready to make his spring debut during the first week of games.
Feb 17 2023Choi (elbow) lost his arbitration hearing against the Pirates and will make $4.65 million in 2023, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi had filed at $5.4 million, but the arbiter has ruled in favor of the team. Acquired from the Rays in November, Choi posted a .729 OPS with 11 home runs over 113 games last season. He had minor elbow surgery shortly after the trade but is expected to be fine for Opening Day. Choi is slated to see the lion's share of playing time at first base for the Pirates this season.
Nov 11 2022Pirates GM Ben Cherington said Friday that Choi will undergo minor surgery on his right elbow, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old was acquired by Pittsburgh from Tampa Bay on Thursday, and his new team likely already knew about the procedure when it traded for him. Choi played through the elbow issue last season and finished the campaign with a .233/.341/.388 slash line, 11 home runs and 52 RBI in 113 games, and he's expected to be healthy in time for spring training in February.
Nov 10 2022Choi was acquired by the Pirates from the Rays on Thursday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Jack Hartman. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi had a .233/.341/.388 slash line with 11 home runs and 52 RBI in 113 games for Tampa Bay in 2022, and the team opted to move on as he enters his final year of arbitration eligibility. The 31-year-old should enter spring training as Pittsburgh's primary option at first base.
Oct 5 2022Choi went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's loss to the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi singled in the first inning before launching a two-run homer off Nick Pivetta in his next at-bat in the third frame. He later added another single and a walk in subsequent at-bats. The home run was the 31-year-old's 11th of the year and first since Sept. 13. Choi finished the year having produced at least one hit in four of his final six games, batting .421 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored over that stretch. The first baseman will end the 2022 regular season with a .233 average, 11 homers, 52 RBI and 36 runs scored over 356 at-bats in 113 games with the Rays.
Sep 14 2022Choi went 1-for-1 with two walks and a solo home run in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi wasn't in the lineup for the first game of the doubleheader, but he was one of the few sources of offense in the latter matchup. He slugged his 10th homer of the season in the third inning off Alek Manoah for his second round tripper in his last 26 at-bats. Choi has been losing grip on a regular role, as he has started only six of the Rays' last 12 games.
Sep 5 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Choi is sitting against a right-handed starting pitcher (Michael Wacha) for the third time in five matchups, signaling that he no longer has a hold on a strong-side platoon role. Harold Ramirez and Isaac Paredes should continue to cut into his opportunities to face right-handed pitching while Choi is holding down a lowly .391 OPS since the All-Star break.
Sep 3 2022Choi isn't starting Saturday against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although right-hander Clarke Schmidt is starting for the Yankees on Saturday, Choi will be on the bench for the fifth time in the last six games. Harold Ramirez is taking over at first base and batting cleanup.
Aug 31 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Choi finds himself on the bench for the fifth time in six games, with four of his absences coming against left-handed pitchers. Harold Ramirez will fill in at first base and bat cleanup against Marlins southpaw Trevor Rogers.
Aug 30 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is taking a seat against Marlins southpaw Jesus Luzardo, but the lefty-hitting first baseman could see his opportunities against right-handed pitching soon trend downward as well. Isaac Paredes has supplied an .819 OPS in August, 364 points above Choi's own mark on the month. It wouldn't be surprising if manager Kevin Cash elected to open up a full-time role for Paredes at Choi's expense.
Aug 28 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the seventh time in nine games, Choi finds himself on the bench. Though the lefty-hitting Choi has sat out against five lefties during that stretch, he'll take a seat against a righty (Nick Pivetta) in the series finale. With Choi supplying a lowly .419 OPS since the All-Star break, it's possible that the Rays will look to move him out of his strong-side platoon role at first base.
Aug 27 2022Choi isn't starting Saturday against Boston, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer and two strikeouts Friday, but he'll get a breather with left-hander Rich Hill on the mound Saturday. Harold Ramirez is starting at first base and batting cleanup.
Aug 25 2022Choi is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Angels, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With left-hander Patrick Sandoval on the mound Thursday, Choi will ride the pine for the fifth time in six games. Harold Ramirez will shift to first base while Jose Siri enters the lineup in center field after some shuffling and bats ninth versus Los Angeles.
Aug 23 2022Choi is not in the starting lineup Tuesday versus the Angels, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will sit for the fourth straight game as the Rays take on the Angels and left-hander Jose Suarez. Harold Ramirez will start at first base and bat fourth Tuesday.
Aug 22 2022Choi will sit Monday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will be on the bench for a third consecutive contest Monday. Isaac Paredes will take over at first base and bat third in the series opener.
Aug 21 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Choi will take a seat for the second consecutive game, this time against a righty (Zack Greinke) after he was excluded from the lineup for Saturday's 5-2 win over southpaw Kris Bubic. Harold Ramirez will pick up a start at first base in Choi's stead.
Aug 20 2022Choi is not in Saturday's lineup against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will take a seat with a lefty (Kris Bubic) on the hill for Kansas City. Choi is hitting .105 with zero home runs in 12 games this month.
Aug 16 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With southpaw Nestor Cortes on the hill for New York, the lefty-hitting Choi will bow out of the starting nine. Isaac Paredes will spell Choi at first base Tuesday.
Aug 13 2022Choi isn't in the lineup Saturday against Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games since left-hander DL Hall is on the mound for the Orioles. Christian Bethancourt will start at first base while Yandy Diaz serves as the designated hitter.
Aug 10 2022Choi isn't starting Wednesday against the Brewers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even with right-hander Brandon Woodruff on the mound for Milwaukee on Wednesday, Choi will retreat to the bench after he went 2-for-13 with a run, four walks and five strikeouts over the last five games. Yandy Diaz is serving as the designated hitter while Isaac Paredes starts at first base.
Aug 3 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With southpaw Yusei Kikuchi on the bump for Toronto, the lefty-hitting Choi will retreat to the bench, ending a string of eight consecutive starts in which he went 4-for-31 with 10 strikeouts. Isaac Paredes will cover first base and David Peralta will get a turn as the Rays' designated hitter while Choi rests.
Jul 28 2022Choi went 1-for-4 with a walk and a two-run home run Wednesday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi took Tyler Wells yard in the opening inning to record his eighth home run of the season. He continues to have a regular role against right-handed pitching but has managed only a .224/.325/.358 line across 77 plate appearances in July. Overall, Choi has maintained a 134 wRC+ and .351 wOBA in 279 plate appearances for the season.
Jul 17 2022Choi will sit Sunday against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a breather after he went 1-for-9 with an RBI in the first two games of the series. Brandon Lowe will start at designated hitter while Yu Chang enters the lineup at second base and bats ninth in Sunday's series finale.
Jul 10 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi started the past three games and went 2-for-9 with two RBI, a run and five walks, but he'll take a seat Sunday with lefty Nick Lodolo pitching for Cincinnati. Harold Ramirez will serve as the designated hitter while Isaac Paredes starts at first base.
Jul 5 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi typically finds himself on the bench against left-handed pitchers, but he'll take a seat Tuesday with a righty (Nick Pivetta) on the mound. Harold Ramirez will serve as the Rays' designated hitter and Isaac Paredes will man first base as Choi sits after going 3-for-13 with a solo home run, a double and a walk while starting in each of the previous three contests.
Jul 2 2022Choi isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi went 2-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout Friday but will be out of the lineup for Saturday's matinee. Harold Ramirez is serving as the designated hitter and batting third.
Jun 30 2022Choi isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Choi started against a left-handed pitcher Wednesday, he'll get a breather with southpaw Yusei Kikuchi on the mound Thursday. Harold Ramirez is serving as the designated hitter and batting third.
Jun 29 2022Choi (ankle) will start at first base and bat sixth in Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi missed only one game on account of left ankle pain, which he experienced while running the bases in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Pirates. Monday's team off day along with his absence from the lineup for Tuesday's loss to Milwaukee appears to have provided Choi with enough time to move past the injury. The Rays' decision to deploy Choi at first base rather than designated hitter suggests the ankle issue won't compromise him while moving laterally in the field.
Jun 28 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers due to pain in his left ankle, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury explains why the lefty-hitting Choi is on the bench for the series opener with the Brewers, despite right-hander Brandon Woodruff toeing the rubber for Milwaukee. According to Topkin, Choi, who tweaked the ankle while running the bases in Sunday's win over the Pirates, expects to return to the lineup within the next couple of days.
Jun 23 2022Choi went 2-for-3 with a walk Wednesday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi reached base multiple times for the fifth time in his last six games. He's walked six times in that span, increasing his on-base percentage to .389 on the season. That's helped him maintain a .873 OPS across 186 plate appearances -- which would be his highest mark as a Ray.
Jun 21 2022Choi will sit Tuesday against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has started just once all season against a southpaw and won't get to double that total here against Nestor Cortes. Isaac Paredes will take over at first base.
Jun 18 2022Choi went 2-for-5 with one home run, two RBI and one run scored in Saturday's 7-6 victory over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi struggled with elbow issues earlier in the season which saw him take a trip to the injured list, but he is swinging a hot bat in June. He entered Saturday with a .348/.392/.522 slash line this month. The veteran first baseman combines a patient approach at the plate with enough power for the Rays to like him slotted into the cleanup spot against right-handed pitchers, though he doesn't play much versus southpaws.
Jun 15 2022Choi isn't starting Wednesday against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi started in the last three games and went 4-for-12 with a double, two RBI, a run, a walk and four strikeouts. However, Isaac Paredes will start at first base and bat fifth with left-hander Nestor Cortes on the mound for the Yankees on Wednesday.
Jun 10 2022Choi will sit Friday against the Twins, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has made just a single start against a southpaw all season, so he'll unsurprisingly hit the bench here against lefty Devin Smeltzer. Harold Ramirez will handle first base Friday.
Jun 9 2022Choi went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run Thursday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi accounted for all of the Rays' offense with his fifth home run of the season. He's in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak, during which he's gone yard twice while tallying 10 RBI and seven runs scored. Choi now owns a .278/.367/.484 line across 147 plate appearances on the season.
Jun 2 2022Choi isn't starting Thursday's game against Texas, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games since left-hander Taylor Hearn is on the mound for the Rangers. Francisco Mejia will serve as the designated hitter while Harold Ramirez starts at first base.
May 31 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Lefty Martin Perez is on the hill for the Rangers, so the lefty-hitting Choi unsurprisingly finds himself on the bench due to the unfavorable matchup. The righty-hitting Harold Ramirez replaces Choi at first base.
May 30 2022Choi went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored Sunday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi led off the second inning by slugging his fourth home run of the season. He's struggled since returning from an elbow injury May 8 by hitting just .185, though he does have two long balls in his last five starts. Overall, Choi has maintained a .260/.374/.458 line across 115 plate appearances on the campaign.
May 26 2022Choi isn't starting Thursday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has started exclusively against right-handed pitchers this year, and he'll get a breather with southpaw Nestor Cortes on the mound Thursday. Wander Franco will serve as the designated hitter while Harold Ramirez enters the lineup at first base.
May 24 2022Choi went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double during Tuesday's 4-1 win against Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's last long ball came during the second week of the season, but he went deep during the sixth inning Tuesday to end the 20-game drought. Despite the lack of early power this season, the 31-year-old still has a strong .282/.380/.471 slash line to go with 19 RBI and 10 runs in 27 games.
May 18 2022Choi went 1-for-1 with an RBI after entering the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning Wednesday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi didn't start the game with southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound. However, he provided an insurance run for the Rays by driving in his 15th run of the campaign and fifth across his last five games. Overall, Choi has maintained a .279/.388/.441 line across 80 plate appearances this season.
May 14 2022Choi isn't starting Saturday against Toronto, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has drawn four starts since returning to the field, but he's gone 0-for-15 with an RBI and eight strikeouts. Manuel Margot will serve as the designated hitter while Vidal Brujan starts in right field against southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu.
May 10 2022Choi will sit Tuesday against the Angels, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi hasn't started against a southpaw all season, a trend which will continue here against Reid Detmers. Yandy Diaz will start at first base.
May 8 2022The Rays reinstated Choi (elbow) from the 10-day injured list Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He'll start at first base and serve as the Rays' cleanup hitter in the team's series finale in Seattle, according to Topkin. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Infielder Isaac Paredes was sent to Triple-A Durham to clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Choi, who returns after a minimum-length stay on the IL due to loose bodies in his right elbow. Considering that Choi bats from the left side of the plate and isn't forced to do much throwing with his right arm given that he serves as either a first baseman or designated hitter, the injury shouldn't be anything that's too worrisome moving forward. With Choi back in the fold, Yandy Diaz is expected to move across the diamond to see most of his work at third base, which will likely result in Taylor Walls losing out on at-bats.
May 6 2022Choi (elbow) will be activated from the injured list for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He did well in an extended spring training game Friday and will fly to Seattle on Saturday to join the big-league club. With the Rays set to face righty Chris Flexen on Sunday, it's a good spot to get the lefty-hitting Choi back in the mix. He is hitting .357 with two home runs, a 20.8 BB% and a 32.1 K% in 15 games this season.
May 5 2022Choi (elbow) served as the designated hitter in an extended spring training game Thursday and will play first base Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was confident that he would need only a short stint on the injured list, and his quick progress provides evidence of that. He is expected to rejoin the Rays at some point during the team's ongoing west coast road trip, which ends on May 11. Yandy Diaz has operated as the primary first baseman in Choi's absence.
May 1 2022Rays manager Kevin Cash said Choi (elbow) took swings in the batting cage Saturday prior to being placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday, Steve Carney of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Choi was deactivated Sunday, the move is retroactive to Thursday, making him eligible to return from the IL in as little as a week. The Rays aren't ruling out the possibility of that happening, as Choi is already said to be showing improvement following Saturday's hitting session. According to Joey Johnston of the Tampa Bay Times, Cash added that he expects Choi to join the team for its upcoming West Coast road trip, which runs from Monday through May 11 and includes stops in Oakland, Seattle and Anaheim.
Apr 30 2022Choi (elbow) isn't starting Saturday's game against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi continues to deal with a slightly hyperextended left elbow, and he'll be out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game. He was available off the bench if needed Friday, and it's possible that'll be the case once again Saturday. Although manager Kevin Cash is hopeful Choi won't require a stint on the IL, the team has discussed the possibility, radio broadcaster Steve Carney reports. Yandy Diaz will shift to first base while Taylor Walls starts at the hot corner.
Apr 24 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With southpaw Rich Hill on the hill for Boston, the Rays will stock up some extra right-handed bats in the series finale. The lefty-hitting Choi will bow out of the lineup while the righty-hitting Harold Ramirez steps in as Tampa Bay's designated hitter.
Apr 19 2022Choi is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi started the past two games and will take a seat Tuesday with southpaw Justin Steele on the mound for Chicago. Harold Ramirez will take over at first base for Tampa Bay.
Apr 16 2022Choi isn't starting Saturday's game against the White Sox, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though right-hander Michael Kopech is starting for the White Sox on Saturday, Choi will be on the bench for the second time in the last three games. Harold Ramirez will start at first base and bat fourth.
Apr 15 2022Choi went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, a walk and a run scored in Friday's 3-2 loss to the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi smacked an RBI double and came around to score during the sixth inning but it wasn't enough to complete a comeback. The hot-hitting lefty is now slashing .526/.640/1.000 with five extra-base hits through 25 plate appearances. He's reached base at least twice in six consecutive games.
Apr 14 2022Choi is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Athletics, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With southpaw Cole Irvin on the bump for Oakland in the series finale, the lefty-hitting Choi will retreat to the bench. Yandy Diaz will move across the diamond to replace Choi at first base.
Apr 13 2022Choi went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Wednesday's loss to the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tampa Bay wasn't able to produce much offense Wednesday, but Choi kept his hot start to the campaign going with his second homer. The first baseman extended his hitting streak to five games, during which he has gone 9-for-16 (.563) with four extra-base hits and six RBI. Choi has also walked five times in 21 plate appearances this season.
Apr 12 2022Choi went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, a double and a walk during Tuesday's 9-8 win over the Athletics in 10 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi gave the Rays a 5-3 lead with his three-run homer during the second inning and reached base in all four of his plate appearances before being replaced by a pinch hitter. The 30-year-old has three consecutive multi-hit games and has a 1.706 OPS through the first five contests of 2022.
Apr 8 2022Choi will sit for Friday's game against the Orioles with lefty John Means on the mound, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is a career .179/.275/.282 hitter against lefties, and the Rays like their platoons, so he's unlikely to start against many southpaws this season. Harold Ramirez will get the start at first base Friday.
Nov 30 2021Choi agreed to a one-year, $3.2 million deal with the Rays on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi appeared in 83 games during 2021 and hit .229/.348/.411 with 11 homers, 14 doubles, 45 RBI and 36 runs in 305 playe appearances. He should see plenty of time at first base next season, especially with Yandy Diaz likely to see more time at third base following the departure of Joey Wendle.
Oct 11 2021Choi is out of the lineup Monday for the Rays' Game 4 matchup with the Red Sox in the ALDS, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With a lefty (Eduardo Rodriguez) on the bump for Boston, the lefty-hitting Choi will take a seat for Game 4. Jordan Luplow fills in for Choi at first base.
Oct 9 2021Choi went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 14-6 loss to the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi wasn't in the lineup for Friday's matchup, but he entered the game in the top of the fourth inning. His homer in the sixth inning brought the Rays within two runs, but the team was unable to keep up with Boston's strong offensive performance in Game 2. The 30-year-old has now recorded extra-base hits in three of his last five games.
Oct 8 2021Choi is out of the lineup for Game 2 of the ALDS against the Red Sox on Friday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will sit for the second straight game to open the playoffs with lefty Chris Sale pitching for Boston. Jordan Luplow will receive another start at first base for Tampa Bay.
Oct 7 2021Choi isn't starting Game 1 of the ALDS against the Red Sox on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a breather for the Rays' first postseason matchup with lefty Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound for Tampa Bay. Jordan Luplow will start at first base and bat sixth.
Oct 2 2021Choi isn't starting Saturday's game against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi started against a southpaw in Friday's series opener, but he'll take a seat with left-hander Jordan Montgomery on the mound Saturday. Francisco Mejia will start at first base and bat ninth.
Sep 30 2021Choi went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in a 7-0 win over the Astros on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman broke the game open in the fifth inning, launching a three-run shot to right field to extend the Rays' lead from 3-0 to 6-0. Choi entered the game having gone 1-for-22 over his previous eight contests, so he'll look to use the big blast as momentum to turn things around as the regular season winds down. The 30-year-old has struggled through an injury-plagued campaign during which he is batting only .230 with 11 homers and 45 RBI through 80 games.
Sep 20 2021Choi is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 2-for-9 with three walks and a run while starting in each of the Rays' final three games of their weekend series with the Tigers, the lefty-hitting Choi will head to the bench Monday with southpaw Robbie Ray on the mound for Toronto. Jordan Luplow replaces Choi at first base.
Sep 18 2021Choi went 2-for-4 with a run in an extra-inning win over the Tigers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi had an opportunity to author his second straight two-hit effort before being pinch hit for in the ninth inning. The veteran had been mired in a 1-for-16 funk over the previous five contests after a multi-week stay on the injured list due to a hamstring strain, so perhaps the last pair of contests are a sign he's shaken off whatever rust may have accumulated.
Sep 16 2021Choi isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Tigers, radio broadcaster Steve Carney reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will be out of the lineup for a second straight game with left-hander Tyler Alexander on the mound for the Tigers. Jordan Luplow will start at first base and bat sixth.
Sep 15 2021Choi isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will be on the bench with left-hander Robbie Ray starting for Toronto on Wednesday. Jordan Luplow will start at first base and bat seventh.
Sep 14 2021Choi went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double in Tuesday's victory over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman took Jose Berrios deep in the second inning and then ripped a double off him in the fourth. It was his 10th home run of the season and first multi-hit game since returning from the 10-day injured list Wednesday.
Sep 12 2021Choi is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jordan Luplow starts at first base while Choi, hitting .235 with two doubles, a home run and eight RBI in his last 10 games, gets the day off.
Sep 10 2021Choi is not starting Friday against the Tigers and lefty Matthew Boyd. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi went hitless in his return from a hamstring injury during Wednesday's loss to Boston, and now he'll retreat to the bench against the southpaw. Jordan Luplow draws the start at first base and will bat sixth.
Sep 9 2021Choi (hamstring), activated from the injured list earlier in the day, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a loss to the Rays on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi seemed to certainly have some rust on his bat after returning from what was a two-week-plus stay on the injured list. The good news is Choi was able to play all nine innings at first base, corroborating a return to full health.
Sep 8 2021Choi (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi went through a pregame workout Tuesday and apparently checked out well, as he'll return to the active roster ahead of Wednesday's series finale against the Red Sox. Choi missed approximately two weeks due to a left hamstring strain and went 0-for-5 with an RBI, two walks and three strikeouts across two rehab games.
Sep 7 2021Choi (hamstring), who rejoined the Rays on Monday and fielded groundballs before the series opener against the Red Sox, will go through a full pregame workout Tuesday, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Choi's ability to get through a twin bill with the FCL Rays on Saturday and take grounders Monday without setbacks strongly supports the notion he's ready for activation, successfully completing Tuesday's planned activity would offer an additional level of assurance. If Choi's workout goes off without a hitch, it's likely he's activated ahead of Wednesday's series finale.
Sep 6 2021The Rays are expected to reinstate Choi (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has rejoined the Rays in Boston after wrapping up a two-game rehab stint in the rookie-level Florida Complex League over the weekend. Though Choi's strained left hamstring responded well to the rehab appearances, the Rays will delay activating him until the middle of the week with the team facing a pair of left-handed starting pitchers (Chris Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez) to begin its series with the Red Sox. The lefty-hitting Choi should draw back into the starting nine Wednesday versus Boston right-hander Nathan Eovaldi.
Sep 5 2021Choi (hamstring) went 0-for-5 with an RBI and two walks over both games of a doubleheader with the Rays' Florida Complex League team Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The recovering veteran got a solid workload in during a twin bill Saturday against the FCL Braves squad, going eight innings at first base in Game 1 and filling the DH role while logging three additional plate appearances in Game 2. The team's official site reports Choi is expected to travel with the Rays on the road trip that begins Monday in Boston and could be activated in time for that contest.
Sep 1 2021Choi (hamstring) could begin a rehab assignment with the rookie-level Florida Coast League affiliate Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi felt good after fielding grounders Tuesday, and he'll test his hamstring during pregame workouts again Wednesday. Although it's encouraging that he's on track to return to game action Thursday, he'll likely require a lengthy rehab assignment since manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that the 30-year-old isn't close to being activated.
Aug 31 2021Choi (hamstring) fielded groundballs on the field Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has been out for a week with a left hamstring strain. While it's a positive that he's making progress, he isn't considered close to activation, which likely means he'll wind up missing more than the minimum 10 days.
Aug 24 2021Choi was placed on the injured list as expected Tuesday with a left hamstring strain, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi left Sunday's game against the White Sox with what was originally called hamstring tightness, but the diagnosis has since been updated to a strain. He's expected back within two weeks and could return after the minimum 10 days, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Nelson Cruz was activated from the COVID-19 injured list and could be used as the first baseman in Choi's absence during the Rays' two-game series in Philadelphia.
Aug 23 2021Choi (hamstring) is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was diagnosed with left hamstring tightness after he exited Sunday's game against the White Sox in the second inning. The Rays haven't provided a timetable for his return, but Topkin reports the first baseman will be out "a while." Nelson Cruz (illness) is slated to return from the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday and is a candidate to fill in at first base while the Rays play in a National League park in Philadelphia.
Aug 22 2021Choi was removed in the second inning of Sunday's game against the White Sox with left hamstring tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi appeared to tweak the hamstring while rounding first on his first-inning double. He stayed in the contest and came around to score, but he remained in the dugout when the Rays came out for the top of the second inning. According to Topkin, the hamstring issue is something that Choi had been managing off and on heading into Sunday, so it wouldn't be surprising if the Rays held him out of the lineup for at least the next few days.
Aug 21 2021Choi isn't in the lineup Saturday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi started the last three games and went 4-for-12 with a home run and five RBI. Yandy Diaz will shift to first base while Joey Wendle takes over at the hot corner.
Aug 20 2021Choi went 1-for-4 with an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single in a win over the Orioles on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi is working on a modest three-game hitting streak and has reached safely in five of his last six games overall. The 30-year-old has rewarded fantasy managers with frequent appearances on the basepaths this season, as a career-high 14.3 percent walk rate has helped lead to a .361 on-base percentage that's just shy of his high-water mark of .363 in that category.
Aug 17 2021Choi is not starting Tuesday against the Orioles and left-hander John Means, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi scored a pair of runs while reaching base three times Monday, but he'll now get a chance to rest against the southpaw. Jordan Luplow is set to man first base and bat eighth.
Aug 15 2021Choi is out of the lineup Sunday against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi returned to the lineup Saturday after dealing with a sore hamstring, and he'll move back to the bench Sunday with left-hander Charlie Barnes pitching for Minnesota. Jordan Luplow will work at first base in his place for the series finale.
Aug 14 2021Choi (hamstring) will bat cleanup and play first base Saturday against the Twins, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi left Tuesday's game against the Red Sox with hamstring soreness. While he returned to the lineup Wednesday, he didn't appear in either of the next two games. He's evidently ready to go again now, however, and will bat in the heart of the order against righty Kenta Maeda.
Aug 13 2021Choi (hamstring) is feeling better and is available off the bench Friday against the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He got treatment on his left hamstring prior to the game. Choi exited Tuesday's game with the minor injury and played the full game Wednesday, but was out of the lineup Thursday and again Friday. It sounds like he is day-to-day and could potentially return Saturday against righty Kenta Maeda.
Aug 12 2021Choi will sit Thursday against Boston, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi left Tuesday's game with left hamstring soreness but returned to start Wednesday, so this might be nothing more than a routine day off. Yandy Diaz will be the first baseman Thursday.
Aug 11 2021Choi (hamstring) is starting Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi entered Tuesday's game as a pinch hitter but exited the contest due to left hamstring soreness. However, the injury won't force him to miss additional time, as he'll start at first base and bat second Wednesday.
Aug 10 2021Choi exited Tuesday's game against the Red Sox with left hamstring soreness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi didn't start Tuesday's contest but apparently suffered the injury during the seventh inning when he tied the game 4-4 on a pinch-hit, two-RBI double. The 30-year-old should be considered day-to-day heading into Wednesday's contest in Boston.
Aug 7 2021Choi will sit Saturday against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's days off typically come against lefties, but he'll sit Saturday even with the Rays facing a righty in Spenser Watkins. Yandy Diaz will start at first base, with Joey Wendle starting at third.
Aug 3 2021Choi is not starting Tuesday's game against the Mariners, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has gone hitless with a pair of strikeouts in his last two games, lowering his average to .250 in the last 10 games. Yandy Diaz will start at first base Tuesday, with Joey Wendle playing third base.
Aug 1 2021Choi went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took Nathan Eovaldi deep in the first inning, Choi's eighth homer of the year and fourth in his last seven games. The 30-year-old is slashing .310/.375/.793 over that stretch, and it's probably no coincidence that his power surge began when Nelson Cruz slid into the Tampa Bay batting order directly behind him.
Jul 30 2021Choi went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and two runs in a win over the Yankees on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi helped pile on the runs late, slugging his seventh homer of the season with Brandon Lowe aboard in the sixth to extend the Rays' lead to 12-0 at the time. The veteran is closing out July on a heater, as he's now posted a .321/.406/.714 slash line with two doubles, three home runs and nine RBI over his last eight games.
Jul 28 2021Choi is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will take a seat after he went 6-for-16 with a pair of home runs, two doubles and six RBI while starting at first base in each of the past four games. He'll cede first base to Yandy Diaz with a lefty (Nestor Cortes) on the hill for the Yankees, but the lefty-hitting Choi should remain a fixture in the lineup against right-handed pitching.
Jul 25 2021Choi went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 8-2 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old launched a solo shot off J.C. Mejia in the first inning and never looked back, providing the engine in a big night for the Tampa offense. Choi has gone yard in back-to-back games, and despite missing significant time with injuries this season, he's slashing .270/.383/.454 with six homers and 27 RBI through 45 games.
Jul 23 2021Choi went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi socked his fifth long ball of the year in the ninth inning off reliever Nick Wittgren, and his blast was part of a six-run frame that allowed the Rays to come away with the win. The first baseman has gone yard twice while hitting a meager .227 across 44 at-bats this month.
Jul 22 2021Choi isn't starting Thursday's game against Cleveland, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi had started each of the last three games and went 3-for-11 with an RBI, a walk and four strikeouts. Austin Meadows will serve as the designated hitter and bat fourth.
Jul 20 2021Choi was a late addition to Tuesday's lineup against the Orioles after Yandy Diaz was scratched for undisclosed reasons, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was initially slated to begin the game on the bench, but with Diaz unable to go, he'll get the nod at first base and bat seventh against left-hander John Means.
Jul 18 2021Choi is not in Sunday's lineup against Atlanta, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty slugger will head to the bench in a National League park against southpaw Drew Smyly. Yandy Diaz will start at first base and hit second.
Jul 17 2021Choi went 1-for-6 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-6 win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi took Michael Wacha long in the fifth that knotted the game up at three apiece. It was his fourth homer of the year and his first since June 27. The 30-year-old is slashing .248/.371/.402 with 10 extra-base hits, 20 RBI, 16 runs scored and a 21:39 BB:K over 140 plate appearances and continues to slot in as either the first baseman or designated hitter for the Rays.
Jul 10 2021Choi went 1-for-3 with a walk and three RBI in Friday's 7-1 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A bases-loaded hit by pitch in the fourth inning and a two-run single in the sixth accounted for Choi's production. The 30-year-old is on a tear with the All-Star break approaching, slashing .345/.457/.517 over his last nine games with a homer and eight RBI.
Jul 7 2021Choi will not start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader as lefty Sam Hentges takes the ball for Cleveland, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a breather after recording a walk while going hitless in Game 1. Yandy Diaz will start at first base as Wander Franco mans the hot corner.
Jul 6 2021Choi went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs in a win over Cleveland on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's second multi-hit effort in the last seven games pushed his season slash line to an impressive .270/.387/.420 across 119 plate appearances. Choi has already matched his homer (three) and RBI (16) totals from 2020 in nine fewer games, and both his average and OBP are currently sitting at career highs.
Jul 4 2021Choi went 1-for-1 with two walks in a loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was one of the few offensive bright spots for the spiraling Rays, pushing his season on-base percentage to a career-high .383 by reaching safely three times. The veteran has been particularly productive over the last week, hitting .350 (7-for-20) with a double, a home run, five RBI, three walks and three runs across his last six games.
Jun 27 2021Choi went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi went deep off Mike Mayers in the sixth inning to put the Rays on top before the Angels' bats came alive late in the game. It was his third homer of the season and first since May 21. The 30-year-old lefty owns an .821 OPS with eight extra-base hits through 101 plate appearances this season. Even with his big weekend, Choi is just 10-for-44 (.227) in June.
Jun 26 2021Choi went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in a win over the Angels on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The first baseman drove in Randy Arozarena with a fifth-inning single and added another RBI in the seventh with a double that once again plated Arozarena. It was the first four-hit effort of the season for Choi, who is slashing .272/.392/.407 with two home runs and 13 RBI across 97 plate appearances.
Jun 22 2021Choi will sit Tuesday against the Red Sox, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has only made three starts against southpaws all season, so it's no surprise to see him hit the bench against Eduardo Rodriguez. Yandy Diaz will handle first base in his absence.
Jun 15 2021Choi is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the White Sox, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi returned from a groin injury Monday, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks. He won't be asked to start two games in a row right away, though he likely would have found himself on the bench regardless of the injury given the matchup against southpaw Dallas Keuchel. Yandy Diaz will handle first base in his absence.
Jun 14 2021Choi (groin) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi recently appeared in two games at extended spring training, and manager Kevin Cash was impressed with the first baseman's progress. He had been on the injured list since June 2 but will return to action after spending just over the minimum amount of time on the shelf. Mike Brosseau was sent down in a corresponding move.
Jun 13 2021Manager Kevin Cash said Sunday that Choi's (groin) two games at extended spring training went "really well" and that the first baseman will be further evaluated Sunday before potentially being activated Monday in Chicago, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Cash didn't explicitly say that Choi will be reinstated for the series against the White Sox, things appear to be trending in that direction. Choi has been on the shelf since suffering a left groin strain June 2, but could return after barely eclipsing the minimum stay on the IL.
Jun 11 2021Choi (groin) received eight at-bats at extended spring training and will play the field in a rehab game Saturday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old will be re-evaluated after playing the field since he's eligible to return from the injured list Sunday. Choi could be activated for Sunday's series finale versus the Orioles if all goes well during his rehab work this weekend.
Jun 8 2021Choi (groin) is feeling much better and has a chance to return from the injured list when first eligible Sunday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi hit the injured list for the second time this season when he strained his left groin in early June. The issue doesn't appear to be a particularly serious one, however, and the Rays expect him back not long after the minimum if he isn't ready to go right away.
Jun 4 2021Choi was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left groin strain. The move is retroactive to June 3. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Kevin Cash said Thursday the 31-year-old's groin issue hadn't improved after receiving treatment, so it's not a major surprise he's ending up on the injured list. Choi doesn't have an official timeline for his return, but he'll be eligible to be activated June 13. He underwent an MRI on Friday but feels better and is optimistic that he'll have a short IL stint, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. Yandy Diaz should handle the bulk of the reps at first base in the meantime for Tampa Bay.
Jun 3 2021Choi (groin) wasn't feeling much better during the day Thursday and the team will know more about his status in the coming days, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hope was that after getting some treatment he could be available as a pinch hitter in Thursday's game against the Yankees, but it doesn't sound like that was the case. Manager Kevin Cash said the team might know more later in the evening or Friday. In the meantime, Yandy Diaz should handle the bulk of the work at first base.
Jun 2 2021Choi isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a breather with left-hander Jordan Montgomery starting for the Yankees. Yandy Diaz will take over at first base and bat second.
May 26 2021Choi is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Choi will retreat to the bench with a southpaw (Mike Minor) on the bump for Kansas City. Yandy Diaz will get the start at first base for the Rays, while Austin Meadows serves as the club's designated hitter.
May 25 2021Choi (knee) will lead off and serve as the designated hitter Tuesday against the Royals, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi left Monday's game against the Blue Jays with a sore right knee, an issue which could have been a worrisome one given that he had surgery on the same knee in late March. The Rays said after the game that he wasn't expected to miss time, however, and that's indeed the case, as he's back in the lineup without missing a single start.
May 24 2021Choi (knee) isn't expected to miss any additional time, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was removed from Monday's game against Toronto with right knee soreness, but manager Kevin Cash didn't sound too concerned about the issue after the contest. Even though Choi underwent surgery on the same knee in late March, his soreness is unlikely to have a significant impact on his availability.
May 22 2021Choi went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in an extra-innings win over the Blue Jays on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi came on as a pinch hitter for Mike Brosseau and ended up logging four plate appearances, with his sixth-inning two-run blast tying the game at 5-5 until the 12th frame. Choi has made the most of his delayed season debut, hitting safely in each of his first five games and quickly racking up eight RBI with the help of a pair of round trippers.
May 21 2021Choi went 1-for-3 with an RBI single and three walks in a win over the Orioles on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has gotten his 2021 season off to an incandescent start, hitting safely in all four games while going 7-for-13 with a double, a home run, six RBI and four walks. The 30-year-old's torrid pace will naturally slow some as the sample grows, but Choi's encouraging start is a reward for fantasy managers that patiently waited matters out while he overcame a knee injury.
May 19 2021Choi went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's win over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh and made his presence felt right away, scoring Kevin Kiermaier with an RBI single off Adam Plutko, and he later added another RBI single off Paul Fry in the eighth, scoring Willy Adames that time. Choi has played just three games but has made a huge impact for Tampa Bay at the plate, going 6-for-10 with two extra-base hits, five RBI and four runs scored in that span.
May 18 2021Choi went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk during Tuesday's 13-6 win at Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old returned from the injured list over the weekend and immediately been a boost to Tampa Bay's lineup. Choi is 4-for-8 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs through his first two games of 2021.
May 16 2021Choi went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi spent the first weeks of the season on the injured list and was on the bench Saturday, so this was his 2021 debut -- and it couldn't have gone much better. The first baseman should be a regular name in the Rays' lineup going forward as long as he remains healthy, and he will look to bounce back from a poor 2020 season in which he only hit .230 with three homers, 16 RBI and a .741 OPS across 145 plate appearances.
May 15 2021Choi was activated from the injured list Saturday, but he is not in the starting lineup, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will be activated from the injured list for the first time this season, though he'll have to wait for his first start. That is likely to come Sunday with right-hander Marcus Stroman projected to be on the mound for the Mets. Yandy Diaz is starting at first base and batting third for the Rays on Saturday.
May 13 2021Manager Kevin Cash said Thursday that Choi is "not quite ready" to return from the 10-day injured list while he continues to manage soreness in his surgically repaired right knee, but the Rays remain hopeful that he won't require another rehab stint at Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being pulled off his rehab assignment Wednesday, Choi rejoined the Rays to receive further treatment. While Choi was able to take part in batting practice Thursday, the Rays will continue to evaluate him on a day-to-day basis before the team determines his next step. Choi should factor into the mix at first base or designated hitter whenever he's ultimately activated.
May 12 2021Rays manager Kevin Cash said that Choi wasn't activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday after experiencing a "little bit" of renewed soreness in his surgically repaired right knee, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was lifted from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham to receive a re-evaluation and further treatment in Tampa Bay, but Cash noted that the 29-year-old isn't believed to be dealing with any sort of setback. That said, the next steps for Choi remain unclear, as the Rays will likely wait and see how he responds to treatment before determining whether he'll be an option during the team's upcoming series with the Mets this weekend.
May 6 2021Choi (knee), playing in his second rehab game for Triple-A Durham, went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk in a win over Memphis on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The recovering infielder had gone hitless and contributed a sacrifice fly in Tuesday's rehab debut, so Wednesday represented another step in the right direction. Choi filled the designated hitter role in his second game after starting at first base and playing five innings in the field 24 hours prior.
May 5 2021Choi (knee) went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly while starting at first base in a rehab game Tuesday with Triple-A Durham. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was making his first game appearance since early March during spring training after he spent the better part of the last month and a half recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. The 29-year-old is expected to play in several more games at Triple-A to get his timing right at the plate, but if he avoids any setbacks with his right knee, he could return from the 10-day injured list at some point next week. Choi would likely settle into a large-side platoon role at first base or designated hitter.
Apr 30 2021Choi (knee) will participate in a simulated game Sunday and subsequently join Triple-A Durham for a rehab assignment, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee at the end of March and is nearing the end of his recovery timeline, but he'll head to Durham for a rehab stint before joining the Rays. Assuming he avoids any setbacks. Choi could make his 2021 debut within the next couple weeks.
Apr 26 2021Choi (knee) will take some at-bats at the Rays' alternate training site Monday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee March 31, and the recovery timetable is believed to be 4-5 weeks. The 29-year-old appears to be making good progress, and the team hopes to get him approximately 30 at-bats before he's ready to return to game action. Choi will join Triple-A Durham for the first series of the minor-league season and could be in line to make his season debut shortly after.
Apr 2 2021Choi (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee Wednesday and is expected to be sidelined 4-5 weeks, so it was only a matter of time before he landed on the shelf. Yoshi Tsutsugo and Yandy Diaz could platoon at first base for the Rays in the meantime, while Choi looks at a potential return in early or mid-May.
Mar 31 2021The Rays are hopeful Choi can resume playing in 4-to-5 weeks after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's procedure was a bit more extensive than the typical knee scope, with Topkin noting that the 29-year-old had loose bodies removed and his meniscus cleaned up as part of the surgery. Tampa Bay is optimistic that the scope will provide a permanent fix for Choi's persistent knee issues, which had been plaguing him since the beginning of camp in late February. With Choi likely out of commission until early-to-mid May, the Rays are likely to use a platoon of Yoshi Tsutsugo and Yandy Diaz at first base.
Mar 30 2021Choi is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic right knee surgery Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An official timeline for his return likely won't be announced until surgery is completed, but the Rays are planning on Choi being sidelined for around 3-to-5 weeks, per Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network. Choi has been dealing with soreness and inflammation in his right knee since the beginning of camp, and after a pair of cortisone injections failed to fully resolve the discomfort, he'll now have to get a cleanup procedure. While Choi is on the mend, the Rays are expected to lean primarily on a platoon of Yoshi Tsutsugo and Yandy Diaz at first base, with Mike Brosseau also potentially factoring in at the position.
Mar 29 2021Choi suffered a setback in his recovery from right knee inflammation/soreness and will be checked out by a doctor Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays were previously optimistic that there were no structural issues with Choi's knee, though he's already received a pair of cortisone injections and was expected to open the year on the injured list. That seems all but confirmed now, though when exactly he's expected to return won't become clear until after his doctor visit. The Rays have a deep group of alternatives at the corner infield positions, with Yandy Diaz, Yoshi Tsutsugo and Mike Brosseau all potentially in line to benefit from Choi's absence.
Mar 26 2021Choi, who took swings in the batting cage and played catch Wednesday, reported Thursday his knee felt "back to normal", Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's certainly encouraging the sidelined first baseman's knee appeared to tolerate Wednesday's activity well, but Choi will still begin the season on the 10-day injured list. Yandy Diaz and Yoshi Tsutsugo are slated to be the primary fill-ins at first base while Choi remains sidelined.
Mar 24 2021Choi received a second cortisone injection in his sore right knee Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays remain optimistic that nothing is structurally wrong with Choi's knee, and manager Kevin Cash suggested that the first baseman could be ready to ramp up his activity as soon as Wednesday. Despite the positive news, Choi still appears unlikely to be available for Opening Day, though he'll likely only require a brief stint on the injured list to begin the season.
Mar 21 2021Choi (knee) is not expected to be ready by Opening Day, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi hasn't been officially ruled out, but the team is planning on him missing the start of the season. Yandy Diaz, Mike Brosseau and Yoshi Tsutsugo could see more time at first base in his absence.
Mar 19 2021Choi (knee) is progressing well in his recovery but hasn't began participating in baseball activities, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old has been battling right knee soreness since early in camp and is unlikely to retake the field in the near future. Choi appears poised to open the season on the injured list since he's not taking part in baseball activities and with Opening Day less than two weeks away.
Mar 15 2021Choi (knee) acknowledged Monday that he's unsure if he'll be available for the Rays' April 1 season opener versus the Marlins, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi expects to glean more clarity on his status for Opening Day when the Rays re-evaluate him this weekend or early next week after he completes a 7-to-10-day shutdown period. The Rays are hopeful that the time off will help resolve the ongoing right knee soreness/tightness that Choi has been managing this spring, but if not, the 29-year-old will be a candidate for the 10-day injured list. Choi's potential absence to begin the season would open up more reps at first base and/or designated hitter for Yandy Diaz, Austin Meadows and Yoshi Tsutsugo.
Mar 13 2021Rays manager Kevin Cash said Saturday that Choi (knee) will be shut down for 7-to-10 days, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has dealt with right knee soreness throughout most of spring training and was checked out by a team doctor Saturday. Cash reiterated that he isn't overly concerned about the injury, but he said that the team should have a better idea after his week of rest as to whether his absence will affect his availability for Opening Day.
Mar 7 2021Choi went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs in a Grapefruit League loss to the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a delayed start to Grapefruit League participation due to knee soreness, Choi is quickly making up for lost time. The 29-year-old has reached safely in all three of his games thus far, and he also went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run in Thursday's contest versus the Twins. Choi will look to boost his batting average back to its previous standards in 2021 after slumping to a .230 figure across 145 plate appearances last season.
Mar 3 2021Choi (knee) is starting at designated hitter and batting cleanup Wednesday against the Pirates, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He has been eased into spring action after dealing with right knee soreness early in camp. Choi is starting at DH in this one, but appears to be on track to get starts at first base in the near future.
Mar 1 2021Rays manager Kevin Cash said Choi (knee) is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut Wednesday against the Pirates, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With his sore right knee responding well to drills in recent days, Choi looks poised to make his first appearance of the spring in the middle of the week. According to Adam Berry of MLB.com, Choi will likely serve as the Rays' designated hitter Wednesday before getting some work at first base in Thursday's game against the Twins.
Feb 28 2021Choi (knee) fielded groundballs and took batting practice before Sunday's Grapefruit League opener, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi sat out Saturday's workout with right knee soreness, so Sunday's activity level was a welcome sight. The first baseman will have a chance to make his Grapefruit League debut Monday against the Twins, and how his knee responds to Sunday's activity level will play a pivotal role in the decision on whether Choi at least fills a designated hitter role or suits up at all.
Feb 27 2021Choi didn't work out with the Rays on Saturday due to a sore right knee, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Kevin Cash said that Choi's knee issue likely stemmed from "over work" during the first few days of camp, and he'll be limited in the near future. He won't be able to play in Sunday's Grapefruit League opener, but Cash said that he should be fine in the coming days.
Feb 26 2021Choi plans to focus on exclusively hitting from the left side this coming season after experimenting with switch-hitting during the 2020 campaign, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The South Korean veteran saw all three components of his slash line decline in 2020, so he'll look to return to the form that helped him to a career-high 19 home runs and 63 RBI in 2019, a season during which he solely hit left-handed. Choi reports that he engaged in more heavy lifting than usual this winter since COVID-19 protocols in his native South Korea prevented him from taking any indoor fitness classes during the early part of the offseason.
Feb 5 2021Choi will earn $2.45 million this season after winning his arbitration case Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will make significantly more than the $1.85 million the Rays had offered. He won his case despite hitting a mediocre three homers last season and producing a barely above-average 103 wRC+, the product of a .230/.331/.410 slash line. Choi lines up to continue his platoon role this year.
Oct 25 2020Choi is out of the lineup Sunday for Game 5 of the World Series versus the Dodgers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second straight day, the lefty-hitting Choi heads to the bench with the Dodgers bringing another southpaw starter (Clayton Kershaw) to the hill. Yandy Diaz will serve as the Rays' first baseman.
Oct 24 2020Choi will sit for Game 4 of the World Series against the Dodgers on Saturday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays will load up on righties with southpaw Julio Urias on the mound, just as they did in Game 1 against Clayton Kershaw. Yandy Diaz gets the start at first base in Choi's absence.
Oct 20 2020Choi will sit for Game 1 of the World Series against the Dodgers on Tuesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays' smart usage of platoons has gotten them this far, and they won't change plans now. Yandy Diaz starts over Choi at first base with the left-handed Clayton Kershaw on the mound for the Dodgers.
Oct 16 2020Choi is not in the lineup for Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros on Friday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi went 2-for-2 with a solo homer and two walks during Thursday's Game 5 defeat, and he'll take a seat with lefty Framber Valdez starting for Houston in Game 6. Yandy Diaz receives the start at first bay Friday for the Rays.
Oct 13 2020Choi will be on the bench for Game 3 of the ALCS against the Astros on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi sits even with a righty (Jose Urquidy) on the mound for the Astros. Yandy Diaz will play first base in his absence.
Oct 11 2020Choi is not in the lineup for Game 1 of the ALCS against the Astros on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old will take a seat in the series opener with southpaw Framber Valdez starting for Houston. Choi is 4-for-18 with one homer, three RBI and three walks over 22 playoff plate appearances this year.
Sep 30 2020Choi is out of the lineup Wednesday for Game 2 of the Rays' wild-card series with the Blue Jays, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hamstring injury that sidelined Choi for the final two weeks of the regular season no longer looks to be a major concern, as he was included on the Rays' postseason roster and came off the bench in Tuesday's 3-1 win to make an appearance as a pinch-hitter. His absence from the lineup Wednesday is likely a result of the Blue Jays bringing a lefty (Hyun-Jin Ryu) to the hill.
Sep 29 2020Choi is not in the lineup for Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against Toronto on Tuesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi made the playoff roster despite being out since mid-September with a strained hamstring. It's unclear whether his absence is injury-related or if the Rays simply prefer other options at his position. Nate Lowe will be the first baseman Tuesday.
Sep 26 2020Choi (hamstring) went through what manager Kevin Cash labeled a "lighter day" of workouts Saturday, and optimism remains high for his availability early in the postseason, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi ran the bases and hit live pitching Friday, and although he wasn't as active Saturday, he remains on track to suit up sooner rather than later. Cash noted Choi and fellow injured infielder Yandy Diaz will have a more comprehensive workout again Monday, at which point there will be more clarity on both players for a postseason that begins Tuesday.
Sep 25 2020Choi (hamstring) ran the bases and hit live pitching Friday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has been hitting for a few days but hadn't done much running, so Friday represents a step forward as he works his way back from a strained left hamstring. Time is quite tight for him to return before the end of the regular season, but it looks as though he could be a factor in the playoffs.
Sep 24 2020Choi (hamstring) is scheduled to take live batting practice against Jose Alvarado (shoulder) Thursday at Tropicana Field, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi also took live batting practice Tuesday but didn't do much running, and it remains to be seen if he'll follow the same protocol Thursday. With the Rays now having clinched the AL East on Wednesday, they could opt to continue taking the cautious route with Choi and exclusively focus on getting the infielder ready for the postseason. Juan Toribio of MLB.com also reports Choi will test himself with what manager Kevin Cash described as "right-at-them ground balls" during the session, "just see how [his] hamstrings feel in the position of fielding a ground ball and then coming up and making a throw out of that."
Sep 22 2020Choi (hamstring) took between five and seven at-bats against live pitching before Tuesday's game but did minimal running, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Kevin Cash reported Choi is still feeling soreness in his left hamstring, and it's possible a decision on his roster status for the first round of the postseason comes down to the wire. Choi has been taking plenty of batting practice in recent days and is now 10 days removed from the original occurrence of the strain, but it appears he still has a ways to go before regaining full mobility.
Sep 21 2020Choi (hamstring) looked good in a pair of batting practice sessions Sunday and Monday and will participate in live batting practice soon, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has been out for just over one of the 2-to-3 weeks he was expected to miss when he landed on the injured list with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Unless that initial timeline was inaccurate, he won't be returning before the end of the regular season, but it appears he has a good shot to return for the playoffs.
Sep 19 2020Choi (hamstring) will take batting practice at the Rays' alternate training site Sunday or Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. While it's encouraging that he'll be able to hit after just one week, manager Kevin Cash said that there are still a number of other hurdles that he'll have to clear before returning to game action.
Sep 13 2020Choi was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Kevin Cash said it will be a 2-to-3 week absence for Choi, which likely means the end of his regular season. Nate Lowe looks like the obvious replacement at first base for the remainder of the campaign, with Mike Brosseau also getting starts against lefties.
Sep 12 2020Choi was removed from Saturday's game against the Red Sox with a left hamstring strain, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old appeared to suffer the injury during the fourth inning when he scored from second base on a single. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but Choi seems likely to be sidelined for at least a few days.
Sep 10 2020Choi is not in Thursday's lineup against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will take a seat with a lefty (Mike Kickham) on the mound for Boston. Mike Brosseau will start at first base and bat fourth.
Sep 7 2020Choi pinch hit for Hunter Renfroe in the 10th inning of Sunday's win against the Marlins and laced a game-tying RBI double in his one at-bat. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's timely two-bagger brought home Joey Wendle to knot the score at 4-4 after Matt Joyce had singled home Lewis Brinson in the top of the 10th to give Miami a temporary one-run lead. Choi opened September in a brief 0-for-7 skid over his first two games, but he's bounced back with a pair of doubles, a walk and Sunday's clutch RBI in his subsequent pair of contests.
Sep 2 2020Choi isn't in Wednesday's lineup against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a breather Wednesday as left-hander Jordan Montgomery starts for the Yankees. Nate Lowe will start at first base.
Sep 1 2020Choi (illness) will lead off and play first base Tuesday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A stomach bug forced Choi to leave Monday's game early, but the issue was evidently a minor one, as he's back in the lineup without missing any starts. Choi started the season slowly but has raised his OPS from .662 to .751 over his last four games.
Aug 31 2020Manager Kevin Cash said that Choi left Monday's win over the Yankees with stomach issues, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi had himself a huge game before being replaced by Mike Brosseau in the bottom of the ninth, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, three RBI and two runs scored. At first glance, it appeared as if the substitution might have been a simple move for defensive reasons, but it sounds like the slugger was dealing with some sort of discomfort related to his stomach. Until further update, however, it does not seem likely that Choi will be held out beyond Monday.
Aug 27 2020Choi isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a day off with southpaw John Means taking the mound for the Orioles on Thursday. Mike Brosseau will take over at first base.
Aug 22 2020Choi isn't starting Saturday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will take a seat with left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu starting for the Blue Jays on Saturday. Mike Brosseau will serve as the first baseman with Choi sidelined.
Aug 20 2020Choi is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi and fellow lefty hitters Yoshi Tsutsugo, Brandon Lowe and Kevin Kiermaier will bow out of the starting nine while the Yankees bring southpaw James Paxton to the hill in the series finale. Mike Brosseau will fill in for Choi at first base and bat leadoff for the Rays.
Aug 19 2020Choi went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run Wednesday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi took Gerrit Cole deep in the second inning to record the Rays' first run of the contest. He now has two homers on the season, but it was his first since July 26. While likely a coincidence that he went deep the same day, Choi announced Wednesday that he was ending his experiment as a switch-hitter, because he believed it had disrupted his swing from his natural left side. Considering he is hitting just .179/.282/.368 across 78 plate appearances, there's certainly a possibility that Choi was out out of sync due to hitting from both sides of the dish.
Aug 13 2020Choi is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Red Sox, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will take a seat after going 2-for-12 with a double, three walks, an RBI and a run scored while starting at first base in the first three games of the series in Boston. Jose Martinez will fill in for Choi and bat second Thursday.
Aug 9 2020Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will get a break after starting each of the Rays' last three games, including both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, when he went 3-for-7 with two doubles, a walk and two runs. Mike Brosseau will cover first base in Choi's stead.
Aug 5 2020Choi is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Choi surprised the world by batting right-handed and homering in the first series of the year, his brand new ability to switch hit evidently isn't trusted by the Rays, who have yet to start him against a lefty this season. With southpaw Martin Perez on the mound for Boston, Jose Martinez will get the nod at first base.
Aug 2 2020Choi is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Choi is attempting switch hitting this season after batting exclusively from the left side over his first four years in the majors, Rays manager Kevin Cash is still expected to withhold the 29-year-old from the lineup versus most southpaws. With lefty Tommy Milone twirling for Baltimore in the series finale, Yandy Diaz will man first base in place of Choi.
Aug 1 2020Choi will not start Saturday against the Orioles, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi sits for the third time in four games, though the previous two times were due to a sore shoulder. He returned to the lineup Friday, and there's been no indication that the issue is back, so this appears to be just a routine off day. Mike Brosseau takes over at first base in his absence.
Jul 31 2020Choi (shoulder) is starting at first base and batting leadoff Friday against the Orioles, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was out of the lineup the past two days with right shoulder soreness, though he did collect an RBI single off the bench Thursday. Choi is 3-for-16 with a home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBI in six games this season.
Jul 30 2020Choi (shoulder) is not starting Thursday against the Braves, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will stick on the bench for a second straight game as he continues to nurse a sore right shoulder. Per Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network, the first baseman reportedly "feels great" and will be available off the bench if needed. In his place, Mike Brosseau is starting at first base and hitting sixth.
Jul 29 2020Choi (shoulder) is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Braves. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He exited Tuesday's game with right shoulder soreness and will need at least another day to get right. Yandy Diaz will start at first base while Joey Wendle occupies the hot corner. Choi could be available off the bench, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
Jul 28 2020Choi exited Tuesday's game against the Braves with right shoulder soreness, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was removed after the eighth inning, and he sustained the injury while attempting to make a play in the field, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Choi had a rough game before exiting, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts while also committing two errors. The team doesn't believe it's a serious injury, so he should be considered day-to-day.
Jul 26 2020Choi went 1-for-4 with a home run, walk and two RBI Sunday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi worked on his ability to switch-hit during summer camp with the hopes of staying in the lineup against left-handed pitchers. That work paid off in the sixth inning, when Choi took southpaw Anthony Kay deep during his second major-league at-bat as a right-handed hitter. While a unique story and display of skill, this development could be particularly noteworthy if Choi is allowed to face more lefties throughout the season, in turn increasing his playing time.
Jul 24 2020Choi isn't in the lineup for Friday's season opener against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu is on the mound for Toronto, so Yandy Diaz is receiving the start at first base while Jose Martinez serves as the designated hitter. Choi should be in Saturday's starting nine since righty Matt Shoemaker is the Blue Jays' probable starter.
Jul 5 2020Choi has been wearing a mask and protective goggles during early summer camp workouts, a practice that could extend to the regular season, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi could again see time at both first base and designated hitter in 2020 after posting career-best figures in multiple categories, including home runs (19) and RBI (63), a year ago. The 29-year-old has been one of the most consistent on-base presences for the Rays during his first two seasons in Tampa, and it remains to seen if added protective accessories would affect his typically sharp vision at the plate to any degree. Notably, Topkin separately reports Choi hit from the right side for part of Saturday's batting practice session and put solid wood on the ball, but manager Kevin Cash remarked that he plans to keep Choi hitting left-handed on a full-time basis once the season begins.
Jun 23 2020Choi plans to leave his native South Korea later Tuesday to join the Rays in anticipation of the 2020 MLB season resuming, Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News Agency reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's impending return to the United States comes on the heels of MLB owners voting Monday to implement a 60-game season that will reportedly begin around July 24, per Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com. The plan would require players to sign off on a health-and-safety protocol to arrive at their home stadiums by July 1 to prepare for the season, but it's unclear how that timeline may impact foreign players like Choi, who could need to self-quarantine for a two-week period before partaking in workouts with the Rays. Assuming that Choi is cleared for full team activities at least a week or so before the season kicks off, however, he shouldn't face any restrictions when games begin.
Apr 28 2020Choi is working out consistently in his native South Korea and maintaining regular contact with manager Kevin Cash and other Rays staffers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi returned to his hometown of Incheon back on March 24 and self-quarantined for 14 days. Subsequent to that period, Choi has been working out with his older brother Jungwoo at the latter's With Baseball academy, which offers the 28-year-old access to regular batting practice as he demonstrated in a recent posting on his personal Instagram account. Choi is also using SMS technology to communicate every few days with Cash and head athletic trainer Joe Benge, and he is contemplating a possible mid-May return to the United States to continue preparing for the regular season.
Apr 13 2020Choi is preparing to resume workouts in his native South Korea after a two-week period of self-quarantine following his return to the country, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi has had to wait longer to resume workouts than some of his teammates due to his decision to return to his home country, which appears to be returning to normalcy daily. The 29-year-old will look to maintain the positive pace of preparation he'd established during Grapefruit League play, when he hit .273 over 10 games.
Mar 20 2020Choi was hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a home run, three RBI, seven walks and three runs across 10 Grapefruit League games before spring training was suspended. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's first full Rays season in 2019 was a success, as the 28-year-old posted career highs in doubles (20), home runs (19), RBI (63), walks (64) and runs (54). Choi also generated an impressive and career-best .363 on-base percentage last season, and although Jose Martinez was brought in this offseason as a possible platoon mate at first base, the latter's defensive deficiencies may ultimately limit his opportunities. However, Choi's career-long struggles versus left-handed pitching still project to cap his opportunities versus southpaws, with Yandy Diaz also available to fill in when a left-hander is on the hill.
Oct 2 2019Choi is not starting Wednesday's AL Wild Card Game against Oakland, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
Oct 2 2019Choi is not starting Wednesday's AL Wild Card Game against Oakland, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will take a seat with lefty Sean Manaea on the mound for Oakland. He's made the roster, though, and has a decent chance to appear of the bench in what could be a game full of substitutions. Yandy Diaz starts at first base.
Sep 30 2019Choi (foot) went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and a double Sunday in the Rays' 8-3 loss to the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Choi wasn't able to run at full speed while playing through the bruised left foot, but the injury didn't impact him at the plate. While Choi may continue to run with extra caution during the playoffs, he should remain a fixture in the heart of the lineup versus right-handed pitching.
Sep 30 2019Choi (foot) went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and a double Sunday in the Rays' 8-3 loss to the Blue Jays.
Sep 29 2019Choi (foot) is starting at first base and batting third Sunday at Toronto, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic eports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi missed the last two games with the foot bruise but apparently progressed well enough to return to action for the season finale despite the Rays already having their playoff position locked in. The 28-year-old may not see a full nine innings Sunday, but it's nonetheless a good sign to see him return to the field ahead of Wednesday's Wild Card Game.
Sep 28 2019Choi (foot) is not in Saturday's lineup against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is battling a bone bruise on his foot and has not played since Sept. 25. Nate Lowe will start at first base and bat sixth.
Sep 27 2019Choi is day-to-day with a bone bruise on his foot, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi fouled a ball off his foot Wednesday. His X-rays were negative, but he didn't escape entirely uninjured and will sit for at least one game. Nate Lowe starts at first base Friday.
Sep 25 2019Choi had X-rays on his foot come back negative after leaving Wednesday's win over the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi fouled a ball off his foot during the ninth inning and remained in the contest to finish the at-bat, but he did not retake the field for the bottom of the frame. The 28-year-old will have Thursday's scheduled off day to aid in his recovery before potentially missing additional time.
Sep 24 2019Choi went 2-for-4 with a double, a three-run home run and two runs overall in a win over the Red Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's 412-foot shot to center in the fourth with Austin Meadows and Travis d'Arnaud aboard put a significant dent into a 4-0 deficit. The Korean slugger is hitting just .214 in September, but he's remained a viable contributor with 14 walks and eight extra-base hits (out of 12 total), the latter helping lead to an impressive 12 RBI during the month.
Sep 20 2019Choi went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 5-4 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi doubled home a run in the eighth inning, and the Rays would ultimately walk it off in the bottom of the 11th. The 28-year-old first baseman is slashing .260/.365/.441 with 16 homers and 58 RBI over 121 games this season.
Sep 18 2019Choi went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi's lone hit in the game was a solo homer to right field in the sixth inning that temporarily knotted the score. The 28-year-old has been given the most major-league playing time in his career this season, seeing action in 119 games and compiling a .259/.365/.441 slash line along with 16 homers and 55 RBI.
Sep 15 2019Choi sits against lefty Patrick Sandoval and the Angels on Sunday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi hits the bench against a southpaw as he typically does. He's hit just .239/.345/.366 in limited action against lefties this season. Jesus Aguilar will start at first base.
Sep 13 2019Choi is not in the lineup Friday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi hits the bench against lefty Andrew Heaney. Jesus Aguilar gets the nod at first base in his absence.
Sep 12 2019Choi went 2-for-2 with three walks, two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 10-9 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His three-run blast in the second inning helped Tampa tie the game up after Texas exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first, and his solo shot in the ninth nearly knotted things up again, but in between Choi got picked off second base in the seventh -- one of four Rays caught napping on the basepaths over the course of the night. The 28-year-old now has 15 homers and 54 RBI on the year to go with his .259/.361/.438 slash line.
Sep 7 2019Choi is not starting Saturday against the Blue Jays, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Choi will hit the bench against southpaw Anthony Kay with Jesus Aguilar getting the start at first base.
Sep 1 2019Choi went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run Saturday in the Rays' 9-6 win over the Indians.
Aug 30 2019Choi went 2-for-4 with a two-run double, a walk and two runs in a win over the Astros on Thursday.
Aug 29 2019Choi went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 8-6 loss to the Astros.
Aug 25 2019Choi went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's loss to the Orioles.

Jul 25 2018Choi is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The move to the bench ends a streak of five consecutive starts for Choi, who has seemingly encroached on C.J. Cron's role as the club's primary designated hitter. Choi has demonstrated solid power and on-base skills while splitting time between the majors and Triple-A this season and could be in store for at least semi-regular work while he's up with the big club.
Jul 24 2018Choi went 3-for-4 in a win over the Yankees on Monday. The 27-year-old has now hit safely in three straight, a stretch that includes a solo home run and two RBI overall. Choi is hitting a solid .269 over the seven games he's played since being called up from Triple-A Durham, a modest sample that's nevertheless encouraging from a fantasy standpoint. Choi has only sat twice since arriving, so there's also optimism that he'll continue seeing enough playing time with which to produce.
Jul 21 2018Choi went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday during the Rays' loss to the Marlins. The veteran is just 3-for-18 in his first five games with Tampa Bay, but his second extra-base hit cut the club's two-run deficit in half during the final inning before the Rays fell to Miami. After a two-hit debut July 11, Choi had gone 0-for-10 in his three subsequent starts but should find at least part-time duty for the near future. Some AL-only fantasy players could find value in that situation, though his .208/.255/.458 line in 51 plate appearances isn't appealing.
Jul 12 2018Choi went 2-for-4 with a ground-rule double in a win over the Tigers on Wednesday.Choi drew the start at designated hitter in his first taste of action with the Rays, notching a seventh-inning ground-rule double in the process. The 27-year-old has slashed .265/.306/.529 in 36 plate appearances with the Brewers and Tampa this season, and he could potentially remain with the big-league club for an extended period if his production is up to par.
Jul 10 2018Choi was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday. This will be his Rays debut after being acquired from the Brewers on June 10. Choi hit .270/.360/.405 with two home runs with Durham and has a .191/.279/.408 slash line with nine home runs in 179 career MLB plate appearances.
Jun 9 2018Choi hit a grand slam in his lone plate appearance against the Phillies on Saturday.Choi quickly fell behind in the count 0-2 before working it full and the tucking the home run just inside the left-field foul pole. The 27-year-old rejoined the Brewers ahead of their road trip that featured games at the White Sox and Indians, going 2-for-14 with seven strikeouts. Choi is unlikely to remain on the major-league roster for long, with Brandon Woodruff set to be recalled ahead of Sunday's start and Eric Thames (thumb) also nearing a return from the disabled list.
Jun 1 2018Choi was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday.Choi will take the roster spot of Zach Davies (shoulder), who was placed on the disabled list in the corresponding move. Choi has appeared in just six games with the Brewers this season, but he has produced in his limited opportunities, tallying two doubles and an RBI despite totaling just 15 at-bats. The Brewers will play their next five games in American League parks, which will afford Choi several opportunities to pick up more at-bats over the next week.
May 18 2018Choi will be recalled by the Brewers on Friday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Choi somewhat surprisingly made the Brewers' Opening Day roster and scored the go-ahead run in the 12th inning on Opening Day but was sent down having received just one plate appearance. He's fourth on the organizational depth chart at first base, but with Eric Thames (thumb) and Ryan Braun (back) both on the disabled list, he could get a brief run of playing time, especially during this weekend's series in an AL park against the Twins.
Mar 30 2018Choi is expected to return to the minors once new signing Dan Jennings passes his physical, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. It was a surprise to see Choi make the Brewers' Opening Day roster as the team's fourth third baseman, but he rewarded the decision by scoring the winning run in the 12th inning Thursday against the Padres. Despite his heroics, Choi's stay on the roster is likely to end very soon, as left-handed reliever Dan Jennings will need a roster spot within the next few days. Choi, who has options remaining, is the obvious choice to be sent down. He could be back up later in the season, but it would take a significant injury crisis for him to get regular at-bats.
Mar 28 2018Choi has made the Brewers' Opening Day roster. In a surprising move, the Brewers elected to keep four first basemen on their Opening Day roster, with Choi joining Jesus Aguilar, Eric Thames and Ryan Braun. The 26-year-old non-roster invitee impressed the Brewers' brass during spring training thanks to a .409/.518/.727 slash line across 56 plate appearances. That said, Choi is out of options, so he likely won't stick with the big club for long, especially considering the team opted to carry just six relievers to start the season.
Mar 22 2018Choi (ribs) is back in the lineup in left field against the Royals on Thursday.Choi has been battling rib soreness for the past couple days but should be fully operational heading into Thursday's Cactus League game. He was initially plugged into Wednesday's lineup as the designated hitter, but was removed since the DH spot was not in effect for that contest. Expect to see Choi at the Triple-A level at the start of the 2018 campaign.
Mar 21 2018Choi (ribs) is in the Brewers' lineup Wednesday.Choi is batting seventh as a designated hitter. He has been battling sore ribs but appears to be good to go now. Despite his recovery, he has little chance to crack the roster for the Brewers, who have Eric Thames, Ryan Braun and Jesus Aguilar all ahead of him at first base.
Mar 21 2018Choi (ribs) was removed from the Brewers' lineup Wednesday against the A's as the team is not using a designated hitter. It doesn't appear that the move has anything to do with Choi's rib soreness, but until he's back in the lineup, it can't be confirmed that he's fully recovered. Barring setbacks, though, Choi should be ready to go by the start of the season, which he'll likely spend with Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Mar 20 2018Choi has been out for a few days with sore ribs, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The injury appears to be minor and shouldn't keep Choi out for long, but he's very unlikely to open the year with the Brewers, who are stacked at first base now that Ryan Braun figures to play there often. Choi hit a strong .288/.373/.538 in 87 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization last year.
Feb 24 2018Choi (teeth) returned to spring camp and will play first base against the Angels during the team's Cactus League game Saturday.Choi recently got his wisdom teeth removed and was forced to step away from the Brewers' camp for a few days. He should be at full health moving forward as he's plugged into the third spot in the order for Saturday's affair.
Feb 20 2018Choi is getting his wisdom teeth removed and is absent from the Brewers' first full-squad workout Tuesday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Choi is the only absentee for Milwaukee. It's unclear how long the issue will keep him sidelined, but he isn't expected to break camp with the big club with Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar both settled in ahead of him at first base. Barring an injury or two, the 26-year-old should spend the majority of this season with Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Jan 15 2018The Brewers and Choi agreed to a minor-league contract Sunday that includes an invitation to spring training, Sung Min Kim of Sporting News reports. The deal is worth $850,000 at the major-league level.Choi had a brief run with the Yankees last season as part of a platoon at first base, appearing in six games and swatting two home runs before being outrighted off the 40-man roster. With Eric Thames and Jesus Aguilar performing effectively for the Brewers last season as part of the timeshare at first base, it will probably take an injury or two before Choi gets a look in Milwaukee in 2018. He's likely to see the bulk of his at-bats with the Brewers' Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.
Jul 23 2017Choi was outrighted Sunday to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.Choi didn't generate any interest off waivers after he was designated for assignment earlier in the week, so he'll remain in the Yankees organization, though he'll no longer occupy a spot on the 40-man roster. The Yankees decided to keep Garrett Cooper as their backup first baseman over Choi, who went 4-for-15 with two home runs and five RBI during his brief time in the big leagues.
Jul 17 2017Choi is out of the lineup Monday against the Twins, Pete Caldera of The Record reports.Unless the Yankees add a first baseman via trade prior to the deadline, it looks like Choi and Garrett Cooper will work in a platoon at the position. As the left-handed hitter of the two, Choi stands to see the larger portion of the at-bats, but with the Yankees facing a fourth lefty starter in five games, the 26-year-old will hit the bench once again.
Jul 16 2017Choi will start at first base and bat eighth in the first game of the doubleheader Sunday against the Red Sox.The newly acquired Garrett Cooper started at first base during the first two games of the series, but that was likely a result of the Red Sox bringing a pair of lefties to the hill in Drew Pomeranz and Chris Sale. The lefty-hitting Choi still looks like he'll occupy the larger side of the platoon, and though he'll be back in the lineup for Game 1, he'll likely sit out the second half of the twin bill with southpaw David Price on the hill for Boston.
Jul 8 2017Choi is out of the lineup Saturday against the Brewers.Choi has started the past two games since getting called up Tuesday, turning heads by launching two-run homers in both contests. He gives way to Austin Romine at first base Saturday, but expect to see the 26-year-old back receiving more opportunities while Tyler Austin (hamstring) and Matt Holliday (illness) remain sidelined.
Jul 7 2017Choi went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk Friday against the Brewers.Choi crushed his second homer of the campaign to erase a one-run deficit for the Yankees in the fourth of a home loss. He's homered in each of his two starts since being placed in the lineup on July 5 while Tyler Austin (hamstring) and Matt Holliday (illness) are missing time. He's a player to consider using in daily lineups while he remains hot, though his time with the Angels in 2016 would make it seem unlikely that he'll be able to maintain strong production for an extended period of time.
Jul 5 2017Choi is starting at first base and batting seventh for Wednesday's matinee game against the Blue Jays.Choi will make his first major league start since 2016 after having his contract selected by the Yankees on Tuesday. The 26-year-old is the latest option at first base in place of the ailing Tyler Austin (hamstring) and Matt Holliday (illness), though his audition may be a temporary one. Choi hit just .170/.271/.339 over 54 games with the Angels last season, but has shown flashes of improvement in Triple-A this year, batting .289 with 43 RBI.
Jul 4 2017Choi had his contract purchased from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.Choi is set to join the big club in place of Chris Carter, who was designated for assignment after batting just .203 in 61 games for the Yankees this season. The 26-year-old was slashing .289/.371/.505 with eight homers in 56 games at Triple-A before earning the promotion. Choi spent some time in the majors with the Angels last season, but he struggled to a .170/.271/.339 triple slash in just 54 games. Still, the Yankees will likely give Choi a chance to prove himself at first base with Greg Bird (ankle) and Tyler Austin (hamstring) both on the shelf.
May 31 2017Choi (hamstring) is back in action at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.He missed 11 days with a strained left hamstring but returned May 24. Choi, 26, is hitting .311/.405/.456 with two home runs in 103 at-bats this season at Triple-A.
May 20 2017Choi was placed on the Triple-A disabled list with a strained left hamstring, Mark Sanchez of the New York Post reports.Choi hasn't played since going 3-for-4 with a home run last Saturday. The first baseman has just 54 games of big-league experience, but he was slashing an impressive .353/.438/.529 in the minors before getting hurt and figures to continue providing organizational depth at first when healthy.
Mar 24 2017Choi was reassigned to minor league camp Friday, Brendan Kuty of The Star-Ledger reports. The former Angel signed with the Yankees hoping to catch on with the big-league club out of camp, but he fell short. Choi could work his way into at-bats later this season as a reserve or an emergency starter, though he sits behind Greg Bird, Chris Carter, Tyler Austin and Rob Refsnyder, at minimum, on the first base hierarchy.
Jan 16 2017Choi signed a minor league contract with the Yankees on Monday that includes an invitation to spring training. It's not surprising that Choi could not find a big league deal after electing free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A in the Angels' organization. He posted a 67 wRC+ last year while getting 125 of his 129 plate appearances with the platoon advantage. Greg Bird, Tyler Austin and Rob Refsnyder all figure to be ahead of him on the organizational depth chart.
Jan 11 2017Choi has elected free agency in lieu of accepting his outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake. The 25-year-old who did not see a clear path to playing time on the big league roster in Anaheim, so he will test the market instead of agreeing to ride buses in 2017. Of course, coming off a year where he posted a 67 wRC+ while getting 125 of his 129 plate appearances with the platoon advantage, he will likely have to settle for a minor league pact with his next organization.
Sep 3 2016Choi was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Choi had a two-homer game earlier this season (which was almost a three-homer game), but aside from that, he's done little of note at the major league level. The 25-year-old has, however, been far better at Salt Lake (.346/.434/.527) and it's possible the team could give him another look in left field.
Aug 16 2016Choi is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners. The 25-year-old Choi has logged all of two at-bats against lefties this season so his absence against Ariel Miranda is hardly surprising. Choi isn't getting it done against right-handed pitching, batting .165/.261/.361, and it would make sense if Nick Buss (also a lefty batter) ate into Choi's at-bats against righties moving forward.
Aug 15 2016Choi went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run shot, his fifth home run of the season, in Sunday's loss to the Indians.Aside from the occasional power display Choi hasn't appeared ready for the majors since being called up, hitting .168/.273/.368 through 95 at-bats. The Angels will keep running him out there, but there's little reason for him to be rostered right now in any fantasy league.
Aug 12 2016Choi is out of the lineup for Friday's contest against Cleveland.Choi will get a regular day off after starting the past three games and seven of the previous eight for the Angels. In his place, Shane Robinson takes over in left while batting ninth.
Aug 7 2016Choi is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mariners, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.Choi made a splash Thursday against the Athletics with a two-homer, four-RBI game, but he went quiet for the first two games of the series with the Mariners, going 0-for-6 with a walk. He still looks like the Angels' preferred option in left field, but he'll rest Sunday with lefty James Paxton starting for the opposition.
Aug 4 2016Choi went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI in Thursday's loss to the A's.Believe it or not, Choi almost had a third home run, but Coco Crisp robbed him with a leaping catch at the wall in the bottom of the fifth inning. Choi had two home runs in 32 games entering play Thursday, and even after this performance, he's still slashing just .182/.273/.390 on the season.
Jul 27 2016Choi is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Royals, the Los Angeles Times' Pedro Moura reports. He has been playing pretty regularly with C.J. Cron (hand) sidelined, but will make way for Jefry Marte at first base Wednesday. Choi's .175 average can be largely attributed to a .188 BABIP, but he has not provided the power (two home runs in 72 plate appearances) to make it worth being patient with him in most formats.
Jul 23 2016Choi went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Saturday at the Astros.Choi's second bomb of the season pulled the team within five runs in the fifth inning of a road loss. He's now hit safely in seven of 10 games in July, but he's only slashing .163/.276/.327 over 53 at-bats on the year.
Jul 19 2016Choi hit his first homer, a solo shot, in a 1-for-4 game in Monday's win over the Rangers.Choi reached base in each of his first five starts before getting on the home run board in his sixth game of his second MLB stint Monday. His power came more in the form of doubles for Triple-A Salt Lake, where he hit 14 doubles and four home runs as part of a .327/.411/.485 batting line. If he does catch fire at the MLB level, expect the rewards to come in the form of a high batting average and runs scored rather than big-time power.
Jul 8 2016Choi was called up from Triple-A after Friday's game, the Los Angeles Times' Pedro Moura reports.C.J. Cron suffered a broken hand in Friday's game and was placed on the DL, so Choi will presumably step in and start seeing fairly regular playing time at first base and DH. Choi hit .329/.413/.488 with four home runs in 44 games at Triple-A, but only hit .056 in 24 plate appearances in the big leagues earlier this year.
May 11 2016Choi was designated for assignment Wednesday by the Angels.Choi is 1-for-18 with six walks this season, but with the Angels acquiring Jhoulys Chacin, Choi has been moved off the 40-man roster to clear room. The 24-year-old has been a good hitter in the minors throughout his career, which means he may not clear waivers.
Mar 7 2015Choi cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.Choi, who broke his leg earlier in the week, is expected to miss between four and six months, so he likely won't make much of an impact for the organization this season.
Mar 5 2015Choi will undergo surgery Thursday to repair his broken right leg, the News Tribune reports.Choi suffered a broken fibula when he landed awkwardly while attempting to catch a two-out throw form shortstop Tyler Smith. Right now, the general feeling is that Choi could miss up to four-to-six months, but more information will be available following the procedure.
Mar 5 2015Choi (leg) was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Thursday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. This move comes on the same day that Choi underwent surgery to repair his broken right leg, suffered during Wednesday's Cactus League game. Choi is expected to miss 4-to-6 months as a result of the injury. Edgar Olmos (shoulder) took his place on the 40-man roster.
Mar 4 2015Choi suffered a fractured right fibula in Wednesday's spring training game, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.Choi had to be carted off the field after making an attempt to save a bad throw. The 23-year-old was likely slated to begin the year with Triple-A Tacoma, but at this point he's likely to miss at least the first half of the season.
Mar 4 2015Choi was taken off the field on a cart during Wednesday's spring training game, Shannon Dryer of ESPN 710 AM reports.Choi was reportedly making an attempt to save a bad throw when the injury occurred, and it appears to be serious. While the 23-year-old may not have cracked the big leagues this season, he spent most of 2014 in Triple-A, batting .283/.381/.392 with five home runs and 30 RBI. Choi was suspended 50 games last season for PED used, limiting him to just 70 total games at Triple-A, and while the injury hasn't been confirmed yet, he could lose a chunk of another season in the minors, this time to injury.
Jun 9 2014Choi (suspension) has been transferred to Double-A Jackson and added to the 40-man roster, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.Choi was handed a 50-game suspension for PED use in mid-April, but will return to the action in the Mariners' farm system after being removed from the restricted list. Choi posted a .295 batting average with 18 homers in 2013, and had a .394 average over 10 games for Triple-A Tacoma before being dealt the suspension. The 23-year-old could be a dark horse candidate for a call-up if Justin Smoak's quadriceps injury ends up requiring a DL stint, although Choi will likely need a handful of tune-up games first. James Paxton was transferred to the 60-day DL in a corresponding move to make room for Choi on the 40-man roster.
Apr 17 2014Choi was suspended 50 games Thursday for testing positive for a PED, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. It's not clear what subsctance caused the positive test, but Choi will not be able to play again until sometime later this summer. The Mariners placed Choi on the restricted list, so he will not take up a spot on the 40-man roster while he is suspended.
Nov 21 2013The Mariners added Choi to their 40-man roster Wednesday, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.Choi displayed some nice power over three levels last season, batting .295 with 18 homers in 122 games. He earned a late-season appointment to High-A Tacoma and should get the opportunity to open 2014 there.
