Jun 29 2025Montas (0-1) yielded six runs on seven hits and a walk over four innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas stumbled out of the gate Sunday, coughing up five runs in the first inning, all with two outs. He gave up back-to-back homers to Oneil Cruz and Tommy Pham during that frame. Montas allowed another run in the second before ending his outing with two scoreless frames. On the bright side, he racked up 17 whiffs on 86 total pitches, including six with his splitter and five with his fastball, which averaged 95 mph. Montas is lined up for a home matchup against his former team, the Yankees, next weekend.
Jun 24 2025Montas took a no-decision Tuesday against Atlanta, giving up no runs on three hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was encouraging to see Montas look sharp in his season debut, given that he struggled to a 12.05 ERA over his six minor-league rehab starts while recovering from a lat strain. The veteran right-hander wasn't the most efficient, as he threw only 46 of his 80 pitches for strikes, but he held a formidable Atlanta lineup to just three singles. Montas will look to further build up his pitch count in his next outing, which lines up for this weekend against a Pirates team that has an MLB-worst .645 OPS since April 26.
Jun 20 2025The Mets are planning on having Montas (lat) make a start Tuesday against Atlanta, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas struggled at the end of his rehab assignment, allowing 13 runs in 6.2 innings over his final two starts. His difficulties prompted the Mets to consider deploying him out of the bullpen, but they'll stick with the original plan to slot him into the No. 5 spot in the rotation. Still, Montas shouldn't have a long leash if his struggles persist.
Jun 19 2025Montas (lat) got tagged for five runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he did throw 80 pitches (47 strikes) in the longest outing of his rehab stint, Montas didn't exactly look ready to make a contribution for the Mets in the majors. His rehab assignment ends next week however, and unless a new injury restarts the clock, the 32-year-old righty will need to be activated from the IL by Monday. New York will give Justin Hagenman a spot start Friday, but the team hasn't yet decided whether Montas will move into the rotation spot next week or get some time in the bullpen to try and figure things out. Over six rehab starts and 18.2 innings between High-A and Triple-A, Montas has a 12.05 ERA and 12:10 K:BB, having served up eight homers.
Jun 16 2025Montas (lat) may rejoin the Mets in a bullpen role rather than being plugged into the rotation right away, Tim Britton of the Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his most recent rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Montas got hammered for eight runs in only 1.2 innings, and he'll get to make only one more start before his 30-day rehab stint expires. The 32-year-old is stretched out enough to handle a starting role -- he's thrown 129 pitches over his last two appearances -- but if his performance doesn't improve in his final outing for Syracuse, the Mets may not want to risk him in the rotation. New York plays 13 games in 13 days beginning Tuesday however and will almost certainly need a sixth starter to get through that stretch, and their options for that spot are limited with Paul Blackburn already set to fill in for Kodai Senga (hamstring). If the Mets decide that Montas isn't quite ready to start when he's activated from the 60-day injured list, it could open the door for a prospect such as Nolan McLean to make a spot start instead.
Jun 14 2025Montas (lat) surrendered eight earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one batter over 1.2 innings in his rehab start Friday with Triple-A Syracuse. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas made the fifth start of his rehab assignment but had his roughest showing yet. He needed 53 pitches just to record five outs and gave up five extra-base hits while also hitting a batter. After tossing 76 pitches in his previous rehab start with Syracuse last weekend, Montas is stretched out enough to be a viable rotation option for the Mets, but the ugly performance Friday means that he'll likely need at least one more outing in the minors to knock off some rust before he returns from the 60-day injured list. Paul Blackburn will get a start Wednesday in place of the injured Kodai Senga (hamstring), but a better performance from Montas his next time out could set him up to take over that rotation spot.
Jun 13 2025Montas (lat) is set to make a rehab start Friday with Triple-A Syracuse, but it could be his final one with the Mets needing to replace Kodai Senga (hamstring) in the big-league rotation, Will Sammon of the Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Carlos Mendoza downplayed the idea that Montas' recovery would be accelerated in the wake of Senga's injury, however. "The decision with Montas is what's best for Montas," Mendoza said Thursday. "We are not going to rush because of what happened today. If he needs another [rehab start], we will give him another one." The right-hander built up to 76 pitches in his last start for Syracuse on June 8, so if he looks good Friday, it could be enough to convince the team he's ready for his 2025 debut. Montas signed a one year, $17 million contract with the Mets this offseason that included a player option for 2026 after producing a 4.84 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 148:66 K:BB over 150.2 innings last year between the Reds and Brewers.
Jun 9 2025Montas (lat) threw 76 pitches (43 strikes) in a rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the results weren't pretty, the pitch count is what matters for Montas as he gets closer to making his Mets debut after suffering a lat injury in mid-February. The right-hander's 30-day rehab assignment won't run out until June 24 and New York doesn't have an immediate need in the rotation, so Montas is likely to remain at Syracuse for a couple more starts in an effort to improve his performance before being activated from the injured list.
Jun 2 2025Montas (lat) struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks over three innings Thursday for High-A Brooklyn in his second rehab start. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas, who is working his way back from a high-grade lat strain, tossed 49 pitches (28 strikes) Thursday and is expected to require at least two more appearances in the minors before becoming an option for the New York rotation around the middle of June. The 32-year-old is scheduled to make his third minor-league appearance Tuesday, this time moving up to Triple-A Syracuse after his prior two outings came with Brooklyn.
May 28 2025Montas (lat) is scheduled to make a rehab start with High-A Brooklyn on Thursday, Manny Gomez of NJ.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander covered 1.1 frames in his first rehab start with Brooklyn over the weekend, and he's set to build up to 30-to-35 pitches Thursday. Montas has been sidelined since mid-February due to the lat strain, so he'll likely require at least a couple more rehab outings after Thursday before making his 2025 debut for the Mets.
May 23 2025Montas (lat) said Friday he's beginning a rehab assignment at High-A Brooklyn and will make a start Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas suffered a high-grade right lat strain in February and faced hitters for the first time May 16. He's now been cleared to begin what's expected to be a somewhat lengthy rehab assignment. Per Andrew Tredinnick of The Bergen Record, Montas will throw 30-to-35 pitches Saturday. The 32-year-old logged a 4.84 ERA across 150.2 regular-season innings in 2024.
May 16 2025Montas (lat) will throw a live batting practice session Friday, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It appears to be the first time Montas will face hitters since he went down with a high-grade right lat strain in mid-February. The right-hander would appear close to a rehab assignment if all goes well, and the Mets have previously pegged early June as a possible return for Montas.
May 6 2025Montas (lat) threw his third bullpen session Tuesday since resuming his throwing program in mid-April, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain in mid-February, Montas was shut down for nearly two months before receiving clearance to start throwing. He steadily increased his throwing distance off flat ground before recently being cleared for mound work, and he's thus far avoided any setbacks through his three bullpen sessions. Montas could soon advance to facing hitters in live batting practice, but he may be a week or more away from starting up a minor-league rehab assignment. The right-hander isn't expected to be ready to return from the 60-day injured list until around early June.
May 5 2025Montas (lat) appears to be further along than Sean Manaea (oblique) in his recovery, and the right-hander remains on track to make his season debut in early June, Tim Britton of the Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Signed to a one-year deal by the Mets in December, Montas didn't make it out of spring training before suffering a lat injury. The 32-year-old has yet to begin a rehab assignment, but New York seems optimistic that he's close to getting back on a mound in the next stage of his throwing progression.
May 1 2025The Mets transferred Montas (lat) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction won't affect Montas' timeline for a return, as the 32-year-old isn't expected to be ready to make his Mets debut until at least June while he recovers from the high-grade right lat strain that he sustained early in spring training. Per MLB.com, Montas has been throwing off flat ground since early April and should soon be ready for mound work, but he'll require an extended period of time to build up his pitch count and will need to make multiple rehab starts in the minors before being activated from the IL.
Apr 17 2025Montas (lat) has been playing catch from 90 feet and is expected to begin throwing bullpen sessions in two weeks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas began a throwing program in early April and has been brought along slowly as he works his way back from a high-grade right lat strain. He still has numerous boxes to check off in his rehab program but appears to be tracking toward a season debut in late May or early June, if all goes well.
Apr 2 2025Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Montas (lat) has begun a throwing program, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was cleared to play catch from 60 feet as he begins a throwing progression. He was shut down after being diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain in mid-February, and it's going to be a lengthy build-up process for the hurler.
Mar 27 2025The Mets placed Montas on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old suffered a high-grade right lat strain early in camp with the Mets. A recent MRI showed significant healing, and Montas could be ready to begin a throwing program by early April.
Mar 26 2025President of baseball operations David Stearns said Wednesday that Montas (lat) underwent an MRI this week that showed "really good healing", and the right-hander is likely a week or two away from starting up a throwing program, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas said in mid-February that he hoped to return to throwing in 4-to-6 weeks, and he appears to be trending toward the back end of that timeframe. The 32-year-old suffered a high-grade right late strain early in camp and is poised to miss at least the first month of the season, but a return in mid-to-late May appears possible, assuming he's able to resume throwing in the near future like expected.
Feb 19 2025Montas (lat) said Wednesday that he's already feeling better following a PRP injection and plans to begin playing catch in 4-to-6 weeks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mets had said previously that Montas' shutdown period following a diagnosis of a high-grade right lat strain would last 6-to-8 weeks. While the pitcher is painting a more optimistic picture, it's not clear whether the team is on board with it. Montas will take a while to be built back up, so even if he is able to begin throwing in a month or so, he is likely to miss all of April, at minimum.
Feb 17 2025Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed Monday that Montas has been diagnosed with a high-grade right lat strain and won't throw for the next 6-to-8 weeks, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas, who signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the Mets over the winter, will leave camp and head to New York to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat the injury. For now, he appears set to avoid surgery, but since he's not projected to resume throwing until early April at the soonest and will need to complete his own version of spring training before being activated from the injured list, Montas looks poised to miss at least the first month of the season. With Montas sidelined, the Mets could have starting spots available for two of Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn (back) in their projected six-man rotation.
Dec 2 2024The Mets signed Montas to a two-year, $34 million contract Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deal includes an opt out after the 2025 season. Montas held a 4.80 ERA over 30 regular-season starts between the Reds and Brewers in 2024, although he was much better after being sent to Milwaukee in a trade with a 70:25 K:BB across 57.1 innings. The right-hander will turn 32 in March and will fill one of multiple openings in the Mets' rotation.
Nov 4 2024Montas declined his portion of a $20 million mutual option for 2025, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll receive a $2 million buyout instead. Montas, who will turn 32 in March, posted a 4.84 ERA and 148:66 K:BB across 150.2 frames covering 30 regular-season starts between the Reds and Brewers in 2024 and allowed three runs (one earned) over 3.2 innings in a postseason start for Milwaukee.
Oct 1 2024Montas will start Game 2 of the Brewers' wild-card series against the Mets on Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas will take the bump as the Brewers face elimination Wednesday after losing the series opener, 8-4, on Tuesday. The right-hander finished the 2024 regular season with a 4.84 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 148 strikeouts over 150.2 innings in 30 starts with the Reds and Brewers. Montas has made two career postseason appearances, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out six batters over 6.2 innings.
Sep 27 2024Montas did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-4 win against the Mets, pitching four innings while allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was pulled after 82 pitches as Milwaukee looks to keep its starting rotation fresh for the playoffs. The Mets managed to score both runs in the fourth inning via a two-run homer by Mark Vientos. This marks the third time Montas has not managed to reach the fifth frame since joining the Brewers on July 30 while making 11 starts with his new club. Overall, the 31-year-old owns a 4.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 70:25 K:BB across 57.1 innings with Milwaukee.
Sep 23 2024Montas surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and two walks over 2.2 innings during Sunday's win against the Diamondbacks. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was tagged for more than four runs in a start for the first time since being acquired by the Brewers, and half of the Diamondbacks' damage against him came via three long balls. Montas has served up five homers in his past two outings, but Milwaukee rallied Sunday to save him from a second straight loss. The 31-year-old has a 4.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 64:22 K:BB across 53.1 innings through 10 starts with the Brewers, and his final outing of the regular season lines up for this weekend versus the Mets.
Sep 18 2024Montas (7-11) took the loss Tuesday as the Brewers were downed 5-1 by the Phillies, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All the runs came on homers, as Nick Castellanos launched a solo shot in the second inning before Bryce Harper helped chase Montas from the game with a two-run shot in the sixth. It was the first time since the right-hander joined Milwaukee at the trade deadline that he'd served up multiple long balls, but on the bright side he's struck out double-digit batters twice in his last three outings. Over nine starts for the Brewers, Montas sports a 3.55 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 60:20 K:BB in 50.2 innings. He's scheduled to make his next start at home this weekend against the Diamondbacks, but with the Brewers on the verge of clinching the NL Central title, the team could shuffle its rotation over the final days of the regular season to set up its postseason rotation and give pitchers like Montas some extra rest.
Sep 13 2024Montas (7-10) picked up the win over the Giants on Thursday, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless frames while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas stifled San Francisco's lineup, allowing just two batters to reach second base during his six innings on the mound. The right-hander generated 19 swings and misses en route to posting eight or more strikeouts for only the third time this season. It also marked Montas' second consecutive quality start to open the month, and he now carries a very strong 18:5 K:BB September to go along with a 2.25 ERA.
Sep 6 2024Montas (6-10) took the loss Friday against the Rockies, allowing three runs on two hits over six innings. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas pitched well Friday, setting a new season high with 10 strikeouts while holding Colorado scoreless through five innings. However, Michael Toglia's two-out, three-run homer would prove to be enough to stick Montas will the loss in an eventual 3-2 defeat. While it wasn't the finish he would've wanted, it was a positive outing overall for Montas, who had allowed eight runs over 12 innings in two starts coming into the contest. The 31-year-old right-hander has a 4.69 ERA on the season with a 1.37 WHIP and 120:57 K:BB across 132.1 innings between Milwaukee and Cincinnati. Montas is currently scheduled to face the Giants on the road in his next outing.
Aug 31 2024Montas allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing his former team, Montas had a middling start. He allowed a two-run single to Spencer Steer in the fifth inning and a game-tying, two-run home run to Amed Rosario in the sixth. Montas has allowed four runs in back-to-back starts and has just one quality start in six outings since the Reds traded him to the Brewers. The right-hander has compiled a 4.70 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 110:54 K:BB over 126.1 innings across 25 starts between the two teams this year. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Rockies.
Aug 25 2024Montas (6-9) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against Oakland. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was coming off a one hit, zero run effort over seven innings in his last start and mowed down the A's the first time through the order Sunday. However, he ran into issues in the fourth, allowing the first five batters to reach base with four of those eventually coming around to score. Montas was not rocked in this start, with all five hits against being singles. He also collected at least seven punch outs for the fifth time this season. Montas' next start is currently slated to be against his former club, the Reds in his first return to Cincinnati since joining the Brewers at the trade deadline.
Aug 21 2024Montas (6-8) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Cardinals, allowing one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old right-hander retired the first 10 batters he faced before Alec Burleson poked a single up the middle in the fourth inning, and Montas never even let a runner get into scoring position before exiting after 89 pitches (56 strikes). He's been an astute trade deadline pickup for the Brewers so far, posting a 2.57 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB through his first four starts and 21 innings with his new team. Montas will carry a 13-inning scoreless streak into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Oakland against one of his former clubs.
Aug 15 2024Montas did not factor into the decision in a win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and three walks over five innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas struggled early, allowing the first four batters to reach in the opening frame, though the leadoff man would only reach due to a fielding error by Joey Ortiz. The right-hander saw three unearned runs come across during the inning, but he held the Dodgers scoreless over the next four frames. In three starts since joining the Brewers, Montas has a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB across 14 innings.
Aug 8 2024Montas allowed three runs on two hits and four walks over four innings during Thursday's 16-7 win against Atlanta. He struck out seven and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander started off the contest with two scoreless frames and five punchouts, but Austin Riley tagged him for a three-run homer during the third inning. Montas needed 91 pitches (55 strikes) to record just 12 outs, as he was unable to complete the necessary five innings to qualify for a win after Milwaukee spotted him an 8-0 lead. The 31-year-old has a 5.10 ERA through 21 starts this season, and he's given up six runs in nine innings across two outings since being acquired by the Brewers.
Aug 3 2024Montas (5-8) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on nine hits over five innings in an 8-3 victory over the Nationals. He struck out five without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was solid in his Milwaukee debut, tossing 58 of 89 pitches for strikes and issuing zero free passes for the first time since he got the Opening Day assignment for Cincinnati on March 28 -- a start which coincidentally also came against Washington. Montas has lasted more than five innings only once in his last five outings, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 7.27 ERA while serving up seven home runs in 26 innings, and CJ Abrams did tag him for a two-run shot in the third inning Friday. Montas will try to keep the ball in the park, and give his new team some length, when he makes his next trip to the mound on the road next week in Atlanta.
Jul 31 2024Montas is scheduled to make his first start with the Brewers on Friday against the Nationals in Washington, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was acquired from Cincinnati on Monday, and he'll get a few days to settle in for his new team before debuting this weekend. Montas hasn't been particularly effective this season with a 5.01 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 78:41 K:BB over 93.1 innings, but in recent years, the Brewers have been one of the better teams in the majors when it comes to getting the most out of their pitchers.
Jul 29 2024Montas was traded to the Brewers in exchange for outfielder Joey Wiemer and right-handed pitcher Jakob Junis on Monday night, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas will remain in the NL Central, heading to Milwaukee after compiling a 5.01 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 78 strikeouts over 93.1 innings in 19 starts with the Reds this season. The right-hander has had a rough three-start run since July 10, allowing 16 runs over 16 innings, raising his ERA from 4.19 to 5.01. The Brewers have made the most of their pitchers in 2024 and they'll look to help Montas recapture his form from 2021, a year in which he produced a 3.37 ERA with 207 strikeouts over 187 innings in 32 starts with the Athletics.
Jul 24 2024Montas came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 9-4 win over Atlanta, giving up four runs on 10 hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Reds scored four times in the top of the first inning and all the scoring in the game was done by the fourth, but Montas wasn't efficient enough to qualify for the win, getting the hook after 101 pitches (68 strikes). The right-hander has been tagged for at least four runs in three straight outings, a stretch that has seen his ERA rise from 4.19 to 5.01, and he's issued multiple free passes in five straight starts and nine of his last 10. He'll try to turn things around in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Cubs.
Jul 19 2024Montas (4-8) took the loss Friday against the Nationals, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After blanking the Nats through his first three innings, Montas was tagged for four runs in the fourth before giving up a three-run homer to Juan Yepez in the fifth. The 31-year-old Montas has been plagued by the long ball recently -- he's now allowed two homers in each of his last three outings. Overall, the right-hander sports a 4.85 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and 72:38 K:BB across 18 starts (89 innings) this season. Montas is currently slated for a tough road matchup versus Atlanta in his next outing.
Jul 10 2024Montas (4-7) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings to take the loss versus the Rockies on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas gave up a pair of home runs to Sam Hilliard, accounting for three of the five runs on his line. The five runs allowed matched a season high for Montas, who had not given up that many since May 12, while his seven innings also equaled his season high. The right-hander is now at a 4.38 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 69:35 K:BB through 84.1 innings across 17 starts.
Jul 4 2024Montas (4-6) earned the win over the Yankees on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over five-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas held New York scoreless through four frames before giving up a pair of solo homers in the fifth. That marred his final stat line a bit, and he was pulled after giving up a leadoff double in the sixth, but the veteran right-hander still did enough to pick up his first win since June 4. Montas has a mediocre 4.19 ERA on the campaign, but he's at a 3.27 mark across 22 frames over his past four starts.
Jun 28 2024Montas (3-6) allowed a run on two hits and three walks over six innings Friday, striking out five and taking a loss against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to Alec Burleson in the third inning but otherwise didn't face too much trouble. However, the Reds were shut out by the Cardinals and Montas was stuck with the loss. He generated 17 whiffs, his second-highest total of the year. He's produced back-to-back quality starts and has three in five outings this month. Montas lowered his season ERA to 4.23 with a 58:30 K:BB through 72.1 innings. His next start is projected to be on the road against the Yankees.
Jun 22 2024Montas allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four batters over six innings in a no-decision against Boston on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas held the Red Sox scoreless through four frames before giving up one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. He still departed in line for the win but settled for a no-decision due to an eighth-inning Boston rally. Montas recorded his fifth quality start of the campaign and his third over his past five outings. He's registered a 4.48 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 53:27 K:BB through 66.1 innings on the season.
Jun 16 2024Montas allowed three runs on four hits and three walks over five-plus innings in a no-decision Sunday. He struck out five during the loss to Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas rolled through four shutout frames before the Brewers finally pushed a run home in the fifth inning. He was removed after putting two straight runners on base to begin the sixth and was charged with both after Willy Adames launched a three-run homer. Montas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Rockies on June 4 but has since been tagged with seven runs in just 6.1 frames over his last two starts. He now owns a 4.62 ERA with a 49:26 K:BB through 13 starts. Montas' next start is lined up to be at home against Boston.
Jun 9 2024Montas (3-5) took the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two in 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander never found his footing Sunday, loading the bases in the first inning and surrendering a bases-clearing double to Ian Happ. Things didn't get much better for Montas in the second inning as he allowed an RBI single before exiting with runners on second and third. Those runners did not come around to score, but Montas was highly disappointing following a dazzling performance at Coors Field last week, when he recorded nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. The 31-year-old currently owns a 4.55 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP with 44 strikeouts in 55.1 innings, but his inconsistency makes him a high-risk, high-reward play for fantasy managers. He will look to rebound in his next start, currently scheduled for next weekend in Milwaukee.
Jun 4 2024Montas (3-4) allowed one hit and two walks while striking out nine over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas navigated Coors Field with ease in his best start of the year. This was his third scoreless outing, though one of those was shortened by a forearm injury versus the Angels on April 21. The right-hander had been struggling to rack up strikeouts prior to Tuesday -- his previous season high was seven. Montas is at a decent 4.00 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB over 54 innings across 11 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Cubs.
May 29 2024Montas (2-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Cardinals, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas earned his first quality start in his last four outings, though he'd still wind up with the loss as the Reds couldn't break through on offense until the seventh inning. The 31-year-old Montas hasn't earned a win since April 3, after starting the year 2-0. His ERA sits at 4.60 with a 1.40 WHIP and 33:18 K:BB over 10 starts (47 innings) this season. Montas is currently slated for a road matchup with the Rockies in his next start early next week.
May 23 2024Montas allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas has allowed 12 runs (11 earned) across 15.2 innings over his last three starts, though he's avoided taking a loss in any of those games. The Padres got to him early Thursday before he bounced back and finished strong. The right-hander is at a 4.61 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB over 41 innings across nine starts this season. Montas is projected to make his next start at home versus the Cardinals.
May 17 2024Montas gave up three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas gave up a leadoff blast to Mookie Betts in the first inning and a two-run home run to Shohei Ohtani in the third. The Reds were able to erase that damage after Montas exited, but the Dodgers rallied in the late innings. Given the opponent, this was an acceptable start from the right-hander. He's still at a pedestrian 4.37 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 25:15 K:BB through 35 innings over eight starts this season. Montas' next start is projected to come at home versus the Padres.
May 12 2024Montas allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was cruising until the Giants built up a five-run rally in the fifth inning. The right-hander has made seven starts this year, and in the six during which he has been able to avoid injury, he's allowed two or fewer runs three times while giving up five runs in each of the other three. That averages out to a pedestrian 4.20 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 24:12 K:BB across 30 innings overall. Montas is projected for a difficult road start versus the Dodgers in his next outing.
May 7 2024Montas (2-3) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas wound up spending the minimum 15 days on the IL after he was struck by a line drive in his last start, resulting in a bruised forearm. The 31-year-old right-hander was sharp in his return, though he'd ultimately wind up with the loss as the Reds' offense couldn't break through against Zac Gallen. Montas now sports a 3.55 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB across his first six starts (25.1 innings) with Cincinnati. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Giants on Sunday in his next outing.
May 6 2024Montas (forearm) is listed as the scheduled starter for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks in Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas, who has been on the 15-day injured list since April 22, threw a couple of bullpen sessions last week. The Reds apparently saw enough from Montas in those throwing sessions to have him avoid a minor-league rehab stint and slot right back into the big-league rotation for the series opener versus Arizona.
May 1 2024Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that he expects Montas (forearm) to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible May 7 or the day after, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was placed on the IL on April 22 with a bruised right forearm, which he sustained when he was struck by a line drive in his start a day earlier. Bell noted that Montas threw a side session Monday without issue, and the right-hander will throw one more bullpen session later this week as a final test of his health. If all goes well, Montas should rejoin the rotation for the Reds' three-game series with the Diamondbacks that begins next Tuesday.
Apr 22 2024The Reds placed Montas (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas' move to the IL isn't an overly surprising one, as the right-hander had already conceded that he would need to miss at least his next turn through the rotation after exiting in the first inning of his start Sunday against the Angels when he was struck in his pitching arm by a liner. Fortunately for Montas, he was able to avoid any fractured bones, but he's dealing with a painful bruise that will keep him on the shelf for at least the next two weeks. If Montas is able to resume throwing in the coming days, he should have a good chance at returning from the 15-day IL around the time he's first eligible for activation May 7. The Reds are likely to turn to Nick Martinez to fill Montas' spot in the rotation.
Apr 21 2024Montas (forearm) said after Sunday's game against the Angels that he's likely to miss his next start due to soreness and swelling, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas recorded just two outs before a comebacker forced him from Sunday's game, and it appears the forearm bruise will cost him at least one turn through the rotation. The right-hander avoided a fracture but may still require a trip to the injured list, depending how quickly the swelling and soreness subsides.
Apr 15 2024Montas (2-2) took the loss against Seattle on Monday, allowing five runs on three hits and five walks while striking out one batter over two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Much of Montas' troubles were self-inflicted, as he issued five free passes and threw just 34 of 66 pitches for strikes. It didn't help that he was hit hard when getting Mariners batters to swing -- two of the three hits against him left the park. Montas began the season looking great, going 2-0 and allowing just one run over 11.2 frames across his first two starts. However, he's faltered with two straight losses during which he's yielded 10 runs (eight earned) over seven innings. Montas will look to get back on track in his next start, which is tentatively lined up to come at home against the Angels this weekend.
Apr 9 2024Montas (2-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After two perfect innings to start his night, Montas allowed the first three batters to reach in the third, ultimately surrendering three runs in the frame. He'd then allow a pair of unearned runs in the fifth en route to his first loss with the Reds. The 31-year-old Montas allowed just one run over through 11.2 innings in his first two starts prior to Tuesday. Despite the loss, it's been an encouraging start to the campaign for the right-hander -- Montas now sports a 2.16 ERA with a 1.14 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB across 16.2 innings. He's currently in line for a road matchup with the Mariners in his next outing Monday.
Apr 4 2024Montas (2-0) recorded the win Wednesday in a 4-1 victory over the Phillies, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out five, ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander couldn't quite deliver his second straight quality start to begin the season, blanking Philly for five innings before fading in the sixth -- Kyle Schwarber led off the frame with a solo shot, and Montas then loaded the bases with two outs before Justin Wilson was able to quell the rally. Montas exited after 100 pitches (63 strikes), and through his first two outings with the Reds he's posted a 9:3 K:BB in 11.2 innings. The 31-year-old lines up to make his next start at home early next week against the Brewers.
Mar 28 2024Montas (1-0) tossed five scoreless innings and allowed four hits and no walks while striking out four in Thursday's win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the Nats offense isn't expected to light MLB on fire this season, Montas going six scoreless in Great American Ballpark is a noteworthy accomplishment -- especially after logging a 5.94 ERA this spring. Although Montas doesn't have the stuff he had in prior years, he should be in a solid position to succeed if he can keep walks allowed to a minimum. He'll likely have a tougher time in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Phillies.
Mar 24 2024Montas allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings in Saturday's spring start against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas appeared to have righted himself the last two times out following a couple of shaky outings, finishing the Cactus League on a high note. He next prepares for Thursday's Opening Day start at home against Washington. He talked to Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer about getting his repertoire in shape. "Being able to use my four-seam and two seam, not just being able to use it but also getting good results," the right-hander said. "My slider is there. My cutter is there. I threw some really good splitters today." Montas finished the spring with a 5.94 ERA, 16 strikeouts, five walks and five home runs allowed over five starts.
Mar 19 2024Montas allowed one run on three hits while striking out five over four innings in Monday's spring start against San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas elicited sighs of relief, delivering a strong outing after surrendering four runs in each of his previous two Cactus League starts. The lone run scored on a misplayed grounder up the middle. A wavering breaking ball was the main culprit in his previous outing, but Montas was able to locate the pitch better Monday, per Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Montas will have one more start before taking the ball Opening Day, March 28, at home against the Nationals.
Mar 14 2024Montas allowed four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two over three innings in Wednesday's spring start against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas, making his third Cactus League start, walked three batters and threw a wild pitch in the first inning and was pulled from the game. He came back out for the second inning and pitched into the fourth, when he hit a batter and surrendered two home runs. Cincinnati's Opening Day starter was scheduled to go five innings, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, but his wavering command did him in early. Montas told Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer that he couldn't land his breaking stuff for strikes and had just one consistent pitch (his sinker). He'll get two more spring starts to prepare for Opening Day.
Mar 11 2024Montas will start for the Reds on Opening Day against the Nationals, Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager David Bell's announcement that Montas will get the nod over Hunter Greene comes as a bit of a surprise, but walks have been an issue for Greene this spring, while Montas has made a good early impression after the Reds shelled out $14 million to acquire his services this offseason. Montas underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery last year and missed almost the entire 2023 campaign, returning for only a single appearance on the final weekend. He made a combined 59 starts between Oakland and New York from 2021-22.
Mar 4 2024Montas allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one over 2.2 innings in Sunday's spring start against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas, who shined with two perfect innings in his Cactus League debut, allowed soft contact in the first two innings but managed to prevent runs. The third inning, however, was different. The Royals scored five runs during the frame, including a pair of home runs off Montas. "I didn't really have my fastball command today. It was inconsistent," Montas told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "The difference for any pitcher is fastball command." Reds manager David Bell referred to the pitcher's tiring in the third inning as a "normal part of the build up."
Feb 28 2024Montas struck out two over two hitless and scoreless innings in Tuesday's spring start against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas logged two perfect innings in his Cactus League debut, which left him feeling ebullient following the outing. The right-hander underwent shoulder surgery in February 2023 and made one relief appearance for the Yankees last season. "It's been a long time," Montas told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. "I think two years [ago] when I was pitching in spring training. Being back on the mound is exciting for me. I feel happy and blessed about that." He threw 27 pitches and used his entire arsenal -- four-seam and two-seam fastball, splitter, cutter and slider -- with his velocity sitting 94-to-96 mph.
Dec 30 2023Montas signed a one-year, $16 million contract with the Reds on Saturday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas missed nearly all of last season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in February, but he was able to make it back in time for one appearance at the end of the year. The 30-year-old righty will provide depth to a Reds rotation that ranked near the bottom of the majors in 2023, but it remains to be seen how effective Montas will be post-surgery. Montas posted a 4.05 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 144.1 innings in 2022.
Oct 1 2023Montas (1-0) earned the win Saturday against Kansas City. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out one over 1.1 scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first appearance of the 2023 campaign following arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in February, Montas entered in the fifth inning of a tie game and surrendered a walk, a single and a double. Despite the traffic, he held the Royals scoreless for 1.1 innings, and the Yankees' offense tallied three runs in the sixth to hand the 30-year-old righty a win in his return. Montas finally put it all together for Oakland in 2021, winning 13 games with a 3.37 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 207:57 K:BB across 187 innings that season. However, after being traded to New York at last year's deadline, the righty posted a 6.25 ERA across 39.2 innings and endured a lengthy absence due to injury.
Sep 30 2023The Yankees reinstated Montas (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas has been held out all season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in February, but he will return to the Yankees' pitching staff for the final two games of the season. The 30-year-old righty gave up one run over three innings during a rehab assignment in Triple-A, and he could make an appearance out of the bullpen before the end of the year. Jasson Dominguez (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL to free a 40-man spot for Montas, and Randy Vasquez was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Sep 27 2023Montas (shoulder) could come off the 60-day injured list for a piggyback relief appearance this weekend in Kansas City, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas isn't stretched out enough to start, but he has pitched well in a couple of short rehab outings with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and may wind up logging some innings with the Yankees this year after all. The impending free agent has been out since February while recovering from arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
Sep 25 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that "it's possible" Montas (shoulder) will return from the 60-day injured list before the end of the season, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees had essentially ruled out Montas from pitching for the big club this season back in August, but the right-hander is on the radar again after making two rehab appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Montas tossed two scoreless innings in his last appearance Saturday, so he could be ready to throw at least a couple frames for the Yankees as soon as Thursday. Coming back from right shoulder surgery, Montas making a positive late-season impression could be big for him as he enters free agency this winter.
Sep 23 2023Montas (shoulder) threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his second rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas yielded just one hit and issued no walks in the 25-pitch outing while touching 95.2 mph with his fastball. The 30-year-old right-hander has been sidelined all season following February arthroscopic shoulder surgery, but he could potentially join the Yankees in the final week of the 2023 campaign for a relief appearance or abbreviated start. Montas is set to become a free agent this winter.
Sep 18 2023Montas (shoulder) struck out two and yielded one run on one hit and one walk over one inning in his first rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his first appearance at any level this season, Montas threw 17 pitches while averaging 95.2 miles per hour with his fastball. The veteran right-hander is working his way back from arthroscopic shoulder surgery, which he underwent in late February. While Montas won't have time to get stretched out for a starting role and still looks like a long shot to make his 2023 Yankees debut, manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that the 30-year-old hasn't been ruled out from being activated from the 60-day injured list during the final week of the season, per MLB.com. Montas is set to become a free agent this winter and may want to prove to the Yankees and other potential suitors that he's back to full health.
Sep 17 2023According to Yankees coach Aaron Boone, Montas (shoulder) will throw one inning for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This development comes as a surprise considering Montas hasn't seen any game action in the majors or minors this season and is very unlikely to be activated by the Yankees with two weeks remaining in the campaign. The right-hander has been a massive disappointment since New York gave up multiple prospects for him last August, making just eight regular-season starts and posting a 6.35 ERA. Montas will be a free agent after the season, so the primary benefit of this and any other rehab appearances down the stretch could be the opportunity for him to prove that he is healthy.
Aug 11 2023Montas (shoulder) appears doubtful to pitch for the Yankees this year, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder back in February. He hasn't been able to advance past a throwing program he began in June, getting briefly shut down in July, and the calendar is growing short on the 2023 season. Montas would need to begin a rehab assignment soon to have any chance of rejoining the Yankees in September.
Jul 15 2023Montas had to be shut down for a couple days recently due to soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The good news is he's throwing again, so it appears to have been a small bump in the road for the right-hander. Montas is slated to have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Neal ElAttrache -- the surgeon who operated on him -- early next week in Los Angeles. He's been limited to throwing on flat ground so far. Montas remains hopeful that he can make a late-season return.
Jun 1 2023Montas (shoulder) began a throwing program Tuesday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had been shut down for 14 weeks following arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder back in late February. The right-hander has professed a desire to return this season and has a shot to do so, although it likely wouldn't be before September and it's not clear what kind of role he might be able to fill. Montas is slated to hit free agency after the season.
May 1 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Montas (shoulder) may be ready to begin a throwing program soon, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boone didn't specify when exactly Montas might resume long toss, but the skipper's comments can at least be viewed as positive news for the right-hander, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his labrum in late February. The Yankees likely won't have a timeline for Montas to make his season debut until he's at least reached the point in his throwing program where he's facing hitters.
Apr 3 2023The Yankees transferred Montas (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Montas underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in February, he was handed an estimated 12-week recovery timeline before potentially resuming a throwing program, so the move to the 60-day IL won't affect his return date. Instead, the transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Ian Hamilton, whose contract was selected from the minors in a corresponding move.
Mar 30 2023The Yankees placed Montas (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Montas will avoid a stint on the 60-day IL to begin the season, he likely remains a prime candidate to get transferred to that list as soon as the Yankees need to open up a 40-man roster spot for another player. After undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Feb. 21, Montas will be shut down from throwing until at least late May, and he'll require several weeks after that to get fully ramped back up following the lengthy layoff. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues who are stashing Montas shouldn't count on him being ready to make his 2023 debut until around the All-Star break, if not later.
Mar 8 2023Montas (shoulder) said Wednesday that he remains without a target date to make his 2023 debut, but he still expects to pitch for the Yankees this season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas is now two weeks into his 12-week shutdown from throwing after he underwent right shoulder surgery Feb. 21. Assuming his shoulder has healed as anticipated after the three-month layoff from throwing, Montas will first resume playing catch and gradually ramp up from there. Given that any ramp-up period could last around a month or longer, Montas shouldn't be expected to make his season debut until shortly before or after the All-Star break in a best-case scenario.
Feb 22 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Montas (shoulder) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his labrum Wednesday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Boone relaying that Montas experienced no complications with his surgery, the right-hander will now spend at least the next 12 weeks in recovery mode before he's potentially cleared to resume throwing in late May or early June. Given that Montas will require a prolonged ramp-up period even if his rehab goes according to plan, he may not be a realistic option to make his season debut until around the All-Star break. Expect the Yankees to move Montas to the 60-day injured list as soon as the organization needs to open a spot on the 40-man roster for another player.
Feb 15 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Wednesday that Montas will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Feb. 21, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas underwent several tests to determine what the next step would be, and ultimately a surgical option was deemed to be the best for the right-hander. While the operation will cause him to miss a significant portion of the 2023 campaign, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake said earlier Wednesday that the surgery isn't necessarily a season-ender. Even if he's able to come back at some point in the second half of the season, the 29-year-old likely won't be worth rostering in all but the deepest or redraft leagues at this stage.
Jan 14 2023Montas is dealing with shoulder inflammation and is expected to miss the first month of the season, Dan Martin and Jon Heyman of the New York Post report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas struggled to a 6.35 ERA in eight starts for the Yankees after being acquired at the deadline last season, and he developed shoulder issues that wound up limiting him to a single one-inning relief appearance in the playoffs. Those shoulder troubles evidently haven't gone away, and he's reportedly 8-to-10 weeks behind in his offseason program as a result. Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt appear to be the top candidates to open the season as the Yankees' fifth starter in Montas' absence.
Oct 19 2022The Yankees have reinstated Montas (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday in advance of Game 1 of their American League Championship Series with the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was placed on the IL on Sept. 20 with right shoulder inflammation and wasn't able to get ramped up in time to contribute for the Yankees during their five-game American League Division Series with the Guardians. He looks like he'll be healthy enough to pitch during the ALCS, though Montas will presumably be working out of the bullpen to begin the series with Jameson Taillon, Luis Severino, Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes likely to form the Yankees' four-man rotation. After being acquired from Oakland on Aug. 1, Montas went 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB in 39.2 innings over eight outings.
Oct 14 2022Montas (shoulder) has thrown multiple bullpen sessions and will travel to Tampa Bay to face live batting practice, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas has been out since late September while dealing with right shoulder inflammation, but the 29-year-old could be an option for the Yankees if they advance to the ALCS. The right-hander is expected to serve as an opener or relief option if he can return.
Oct 1 2022Montas (shoulder) resumed playing catch Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas has spent a week and a half on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation and was cleared to throw off flat ground Saturday. Manager Aaron Boone hasn't officially ruled the right-hander out for the ALDS, but he said Saturday that it's more likely that Montas will be able to join the Yankees' bullpen if the team advances to the ALCS.
Sep 26 2022Montas (shoulder) is expected to resume throwing this week, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas has been on the injured list since Sept. 20 due to right shoulder inflammation, and it seems unlikely that he'll have enough time to ramp up prior to the end of the regular season. However, the right-hander will likely be in the mix at some point to return at some point during the playoffs. Even if Montas is deemed healthy during the postseason, it's possible that he'll have to settle for a piggyback or bullpen role given the abbreviated nature of his rehab process.
Sep 25 2022Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Montas (shoulder) has yet to resume a throwing program, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old landed on the injured list last week with shoulder inflammation and received a cortisone injection, and the fact he has yet to resume throwing makes it increasingly unlikely he'll be able to return before the end of the regular season as previously hoped. Montas remains without an official return timeline, though Boone also said the right-hander likely won't be built up beyond 40 pitches before the first round of the playoffs.
Sep 20 2022Montas was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was reported before the roster move that Montas recently received a cortisone shot and is hopeful to make one more start in the final week of the season. Under that best-case scenario, Montas would probably return to start one of three games in Texas during the first week of October. However, given that he last threw 3.1 innings Sept. 16, Montas may not be cleared to log enough innings to qualify for the win if he is able to make one more regular-season start. Domingo German should operate as the team's fifth starter for now.
Sep 18 2022Montas (shoulder) could require a trip to the injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees reportedly have Montas' MRI results, but they want him to be seen by the team physician in New York before making a final determination on his timetable. It sounds like things are trending in the wrong direction after it was announced Saturday he would miss his next turn through the rotation due to a shoulder injury.
Sep 17 2022Montas (shoulder) won't make his next start on normal rest, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas is undergoing an MRI on his shoulder following Friday's start against Milwaukee, and the results of his examination will help determine whether he requires a trip to the injured list. Regardless of whether he lands on the IL, he'll require at least a few additional days of rest prior to making his next start. Domingo German will likely rejoin the Yankees' rotation late next week.
Sep 10 2022Montas (5-12) took the loss to the Rays on Friday, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking four over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had an ugly game against the Rays on Friday, allowing 13 baserunners on nine hits and four walks. He was inefficient, tossing 63 of 106 pitches for strikes across 5.2 frames. Although he gave up four runs, none were via the long ball. Instead, Montas was burned by three doubles that scored all four runs. This was the eighth time in his last 10 games where the righty failed to make it to the end of the sixth inning and he has not earned a quality start since June 28. Friday's performance raised his ERA to 3.89.
Sep 4 2022Montas (5-11) earned the win Sunday as he struck out seven over five scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas logged his first scoreless start since joining the Yankees on Aug. 2 with five shutout innings Sunday. He also allowed one hit for just the second time this year and did not walk a batter for the second start in a row. Perhaps this start is a sign that the 29-year-old has found his groove again, which would be good timing as the Yankees attempt to stave off the Rays down the stretch. He lines up to face Tampa Bay again next weekend.
Aug 30 2022Montas (4-11) took the loss against the Angels on Monday, allowing four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out six batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas threw 62 of 91 pitches for strikes and induced 15 swings-and-misses, but his inability to keep the ball in the park cost him in the loss. He was rocked for solo shots by Luis Rengifo and Mike Ford before serving up the decisive two-run homer to Shohei Ohtani in the fifth inning. Montas hadn't given up more than two long balls in any contest before Monday, so this was more of an aberration than the norm for him. He's yet to get into the win column as a Yankee, going 0-2 with a 7.02 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 25.2 innings through five starts.
Aug 24 2022Montas didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Mets, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the right-hander's best performance yet since being dealt by Oakland at the trade deadline, although Montas is still looking for his first win and first quality start in pinstripes. In four starts since joining the Yankees, the 29-year-old has a 7.32 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB through 19.2 innings.
Aug 18 2022Montas (4-10) took the loss Thursday against Toronto, allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The second inning was a bit of a nightmare for Montas as the Blue Jays scored five times, capped off by a two-out, three-run homer by Vladimir Guerrero. Following that, he settled down, allowing just one run and inducing seven groundball outs over the final four frames. Two of his three starts as a Yankee have been subpar and he has a 9.00 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 8:6 K:BB in 14 innings since the trade. His next start will likely be in the middle of next week against the Mets.
Aug 14 2022Montas gave up two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings in a 3-2 win over the Red Sox on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas bounced back from a rough Yankees debut his last time out with five effective innings of work. The damage came in the fourth inning, when he hit Jarren Duran with the bases loaded on an errant cutter inside before giving up a sacrifice fly. Montas threw only 78 pitches and remains on a pitch count as he builds up his workload after recently dealing with right shoulder inflammation. Montas will carry a 3.59 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively expected to be at home against the Blue Jays.
Aug 7 2022Montas did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over three innings against the Cardinals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The newest Yankee starter was largely ineffective in his team debut, as he only made it through three innings on 64 pitches. Nolan Arenado provided most of the firepower for the Cardinals, tagging Montas for an RBI single in the first and a three-run home run in the second before Aaron Boone pulled Montas from the game. The veteran right-hander looks to sharpen up in his next scheduled start in Boston.
Aug 3 2022Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Montas (personal) will be activated from the bereavement list to start Sunday's game in St. Louis, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Shortly after being acquired from the Athletics, Montas learned of a death in his family, so he'll take a few days off before meeting up with the Yankees in St. Louis. Though he turned in a 3.18 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over his 19 starts with Oakland this season, Montas was saddled with a 4-9 record, but wins should be easier to come by in the final two months of the season while he's supported by one of the majors' top offenses.
Aug 1 2022Montas and Lou Trivino were traded from the A's to the Yankees on Monday, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was arguably the top starter still available on the trade market, and he wound up being reeled in by the Yankees. It remains to be seen who will head to Oakland in return.
Jul 26 2022Montas (4-9) allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while striking out four in five innings in a win over the Astros on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had some control issues, but he was able to limit the damage. The Athletics' bullpen followed up with four scoreless innings of relief to earn the right-hander his first win since June 11. Montas threw 78 pitches (44 strikes) in this outing, which puts him in the neighborhood of a normal workload. He has a 3.18 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 109:28 K:BB across 104.2 innings in 19 starts this year. The 29-year-old is considered a top trade target, so there's no guarantee his next outing comes in Oakland's green and gold. If he stays put, he's tentatively projected for a road start versus the Angels next week.
Jul 23 2022Montas reported feeling only "normal soreness" in his previously inflamed shoulder following his three-inning start Thursday against the Tigers, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Mark Kotsay added that "Frankie should be ready to go" when asked about Montas making his next scheduled start. The right-hander was limited to 53 pitches against the Tigers, but if he continues to be free of any unusual residual effects in coming days, Montas could be ready to handle close to a normal workload when he next takes the mound against the Astros on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Jul 21 2022Montas did not factor in the decision against Detroit in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday, throwing three scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas went 18 days without pitching in a game due to a shoulder injury, so Oakland was conservative with his workload and held him to just 53 pitches. The right-hander was effective in the short outing, racking up five strikeouts and allowing only two hits. This may have been a showcase to provide evidence of Montas' health for other teams, as the hurler is one of the most likely players to be moved on or before the Aug. 2 trade deadline. For what it's worth, Montas proclaimed the shoulder to be a non-issue following the game, stating, "No pain at all. Feel like I was ready to go. My arm feels strong," per Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Jul 18 2022The Athletics confirmed Montas (shoulder) will start the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Tigers in Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was never forced him to the injured list, but he'll make his return to action coming out of the All-Star break having not pitched in 18 days on account of a sore right shoulder. Though Montas' shoulder responded well to an aggressive bullpen session over the weekend, the Athletics could be careful with his workload Thursday with the hope of avoiding any potential setback to his arm ahead of the Aug. 2 trade deadline, The non-contending Athletics firmly put themselves in the seller camp even before the season began, and Montas currently ranks as the team's most prized trade asset in what is shaping up to be a weak market for starting pitchers. Before the shoulder issue surfaced, Montas had been in the midst of a strong statistical season, having turned in a 3.26 ERA and 1.09 WHIP to go with 100 strikeouts over 96.2 innings.
Jul 13 2022Montas (shoulder) won't pitch against the Astros this weekend and will instead throw two side session before rejoining the Athletics' rotation for the first game of the second half July 21, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rosenthal reported earlier Wednesday that the right-hander would pitch Saturday or Sunday in Houston, but this latest news confirms a change of plan. Montas hasn't seen game action since leaving his start in Seattle on July 3 after one inning, and it appears the shoulder soreness will sideline him until after the All-Star break.
Jul 12 2022Montas (shoulder) felt good after a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and hopes to start during the three-game series against the Astros this weekend, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had a throwing session Saturday and has now completed a successful bullpen session. The A's have refrained from placing Montas on the 15-day injured list due to the shoulder inflammation to this point, and it appears he's on track to re-enter the rotation without being placed on the shelf.
Jul 10 2022Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Sunday that Montas "felt good" following his throwing session a day earlier, but the right-hander isn't scheduled to start during the team's three-game series in Texas that begins Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Oakland looks as though it will decide whether to place Montas on the injured list or include him in the rotation for next weekend's series in Houston based on how he fares during a bullpen session, which will likely come Monday or Tuesday. Though Montas checked out fine after playing catch Saturday, getting on a mound and proving he can command all his pitches without any discomfort in his shoulder will be a stiffer test. If Montas is unable to pitch in next weekend's series, the Athletics could turn to Zach Logue, Adam Oller or Austin Pruitt to make a spot start.
Jul 9 2022Montas (shoulder) played catch Saturday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas underwent an MRI on Tuesday that revealed no structural damage to his right shoulder, and he'll remain on the active roster rather than being placed on the injured list. It's not yet clear when he'll be able to return, but manager Mark Kotsay hopes that the right-hander will be able to make a start prior to the All-Star break.
Jul 6 2022Montas was diagnosed with inflammation but no structural damage to his right shoulder after undergoing an MRI on Tuesday, but he won't be available to make his next turn through Oakland's rotation, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Due to an off day Thursday, the Athletics wouldn't have to replace Montas in the rotation until the second game of their series with the Rangers next week. For now, Montas looks like he'll avoid a trip to the injured list, though those plans could change if his shoulder doesn't respond as well as hoped to the cortisone shot he received Wednesday. Montas tentatively lines up to return to the rotation for the Athletics' final series of the first half next weekend in Houston. Through his first 17 starts this season, Montas has compiled a 3.26 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 100:24 K:BB in 96.2 innings, but he's been saddled with a 3-9 record due largely to poor support from his offense.
Jul 4 2022Montas (shoulder) is now slated to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, but manager Mark Kotsay remains optimistic about the right-hander's status, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kotsay noted Montas is doing well after exiting Sunday's start after just one inning due to tightness behind his right shoulder, and the Athletics skipper added that his staff ace "doesn't feel like this is a big issue". The 29-year-old's status should become a lot clearer once the results of his evaluation are in, but if Montas' optimism proves warranted, he could potentially get through the issue without missing a start.
Jul 3 2022Montas (shoulder) is slated to undergo an MRI in Oakland on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander experienced tightness behind his right shoulder in Sunday's brief 13-pitch start against the Mariners, with manager Mark Kotsay noted Montas couldn't get "fully extended" on his pitches. Consequently, a Monday MRI has already been ordered up, and the results should offer further clarity on Montas' chances of making his next scheduled start against the Astros on Saturday.
Jun 28 2022Montas (3-8) was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Yankees after giving up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has given up only two runs on six hits over 14 frames in his past two starts, but he didn't pick up a win in either outing. Montas wasn't at his best Tuesday but still pitched well, delivering 63 of his 105 pitches for strikes while generated 12 whiffs. He has a 3.20 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 99:24 K:BB through 16 starts this season, and he tentatively lines up to next take the mound Sunday in Seattle.
Jun 23 2022Montas allowed two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over eight shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas got through 7.1 no-hit innings before allowing two-out singles to Adam Frazier and Luis Torrens. In the ninth, Zach Jackson and A.J. Puk combined to walk four batters, which combined with two wild pitches to waste Montas' gem of a start. The right-hander had one of his worst outings of the year last week versus the Royals, so it was encouraging to see him bounce back quickly. He has a 3.21 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 92:22 K:BB through 89.2 innings in 15 starts this year. He's projected for a tough road start versus the Yankees next week.
Jun 17 2022Montas (3-7) took the loss Friday versus the Royals. He allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks with four strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas turned in another shaky effort, as he also had a pair of wild pitches in the contest. He's allowed 24 hits and 14 runs (nine earned) in 17 innings across his last three starts. The poor stretch has him up to a 3.53 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 84:20 K:BB in 81.2 innings across 14 outings overall. Montas is projected for a home start versus the Mariners next week as he looks to work out of his current slump.
Jun 12 2022Montas (3-6) earned a six-inning win against the Guardians on Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was not a great performance for Montas, but thanks to an offensive outburst from Oakland in the seventh inning, he was able to pick up a win. The righty has pitched well this season, but he has been limited to just three wins largely due to lackluster run support. This was his first win since mid-April despite giving up more than two earned runs for just the second time since the start of May. Montas will take a 3.40 ERA into his next appearance.
Jun 5 2022Montas (2-6) took the loss during Sunday's 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Red Sox, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was lucky to escape the first inning with only one run on his ledger despite four hits but didn't fare as well in the sixth, when a Kevin Smith error extended the inning and allowed for a go-ahead Franchy Cordero three-run home run. Oakland has now lost each of the 29-year-old's last nine even though Montas features a solid 2.87 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 61 strikeouts during those 53.1 innings. He'll look to get back in the win column against Cleveland next weekend.
May 31 2022Montas (2-5) allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. He didn't walk a batter, and he took the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was strong in this contest, but Chas McCormick tagged him for an RBI single and a solo home run. That was enough to send Montas to a hard-luck loss, his fourth in the his last eight starts since his most recent win. The right-hander has now posted three games without issuing a walk, though one of those was an injury-shortened start. He's at a 3.20 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 71:15 K:BB through 64.2 innings. The 29-year-old is projected to face the Red Sox at home this weekend.
May 26 2022Montas registered a no-decision during Thursday's 4-1 loss to Texas, allowing an unearned run on three hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After sustaining a hand injury in his previous start, Montas limited the damage to one run in the second inning on one hit, two walks and an error as he's now surrendered no more than two runs in seven of 10 starts. Despite a 3.12 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 66 strikeouts in 57.2 innings, Oakland has lost each of the 29-year-old's eight turns besides his two wins. Montas will look to get back in the win column next week against Houston.
May 25 2022Montas (hand) is listed as the Athletics' probable starter for Thursday's game against the Rangers in Oakland, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas' inclusion on the Athletics' pitching schedule for the four-game series with Texas implies that he was able to complete a between-starts bullpen session without any discomfort. His previous start last weekend against the Angels was cut short in the second inning, when he was struck on his pitching hand by a line drive.
May 23 2022Montas (hand) threw a bullpen session Monday and is on track to make his next start Thursday against the Rangers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was forced to leave Saturday's outing after being clipped in the hand by a line drive. However, X-rays revealed no structural damage, and his ability to throw Monday means he will likely stay in line for his regularly scheduled start. Through 50.2 innings this season, Montas has a 3.55 ERA with a 1.01 WHIP and a 55:13 K:BB.
May 22 2022Montas said he isn't experiencing any pain in his hand and played catch Sunday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old exited Saturday's start after being struck by a comebacker on his right hand, but X-rays came back negative and there doesn't appear to be any residual soreness. Montas appears on track for his next turn through the rotation, though his ability to complete a bullpen in the next couple days will be the final hurdle before he's fully cleared.
May 21 2022Montas has no structure damage in his right hand following his early exit from Saturday's loss to the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old received positive news following his early departure Saturday, his X-rays came back negative on his right hand. The team is optimistic that Montas will be able to make his next scheduled start, but time will tell. Nonetheless, avoiding significant structural damage is huge for the potential trade piece.
May 15 2022Montas (2-4) was handed the loss during Sunday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Angels, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk with 12 strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was dealt what proved to be the crushing blow when Shohei Ohtani tagged him for a two-run home run in the first inning. The 29-year-old rebounded to hold Los Angeles scoreless through the remaining five innings, striking out a season-best 12 batters with an impressive 22 swinging strikes in the process. Montas has now received a total of nine runs of support during his past five starts, all Oakland losses, and will look to return to the win column with a rematch against Los Angeles scheduled for next weekend.
May 10 2022Montas (2-3) took the loss during Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Tigers. He allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks over 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas started off with four scoreless frames before Detroit tallied three runs over the fifth and sixth innings, but he still came back out for the seventh. The right-hander struck out the first batter but was pulled after walking Robbie Grossman, who eventually came around to score. Montas has covered at least five frames in all seven starts this season, and he has a 3.77 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 41:12 K:BB across 43 innings.
May 4 2022Montas allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six across seven scoreless innings Wednesday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was dominant for his entire outing, as he scattered three singles and a double across his seven innings of work. He wasn't prolific in terms of strikeouts, though he does have at least six punchouts in five of his six starts this season. Montas has also allowed two or fewer earned runs four times to begin the campaign, resulting in a 3.44 ERA across 36.2 frames.
Apr 30 2022Montas registered a no-decision during Friday's 9-8 loss to the Guardians, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas pitched well aside from the third inning, when a single and two walks set the table for an Andres Gimenez grand slam, as the only other damage was a Jose Ramirez solo shot in the first. The 29-year-old has delivered three dominant performances and two subpar ones, which has led to a mediocre 4.25 ERA despite a 0.98 WHIP. Montas is set to pitch during next week's series against Tampa Bay.
Apr 23 2022Montas (2-2) took the loss to the Rangers on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out eight over 7.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was a tough-luck loss; Montas hung zeros on the scoreboard through seven, with the only runs against him scoring after he exited the game (the second on a slide interference call at home plate no less). Fantasy managers have to be thrilled with what Montas is providing. He has a 3.28 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 25:4 K:BB through four starts.
Apr 18 2022Montas (2-1) earned the win over Baltimore on Monday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas held the Orioles to just four baserunners and one run through six frames, but he threw his final pitch with the score tied 1-1. Fortunately for the right-hander, Oakland found its offense in the bottom of the sixth, producing four runs to put Montas in line for the victory. After allowing five runs and taking the loss against Philadelphia in his first appearance of the campaign, Montas has earned back-to-back wins while yielding just two earned runs over his subsequent 12.1 innings. He's line up to make his next start at home against Texas on Saturday.
Apr 13 2022Montas (1-1) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Wednesday, completing 6.1 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was touched for a solo home run by Ji-Man Choi in the fourth inning, but that was the only extra-base hit he allowed in the outing. The right-hander registered 16 swinging strikes among his 89 pitches and didn't issue any free passes. Montas struggled by giving up five earned runs against Philadelphia in his first start, so this was an impressive bounce-back performance. He's slated to next take the mound at home against Baltimore next week.
Apr 8 2022Montas (0-1) struck out six in five innings while allowing five runs on six hits and a walk in a 9-5 loss Friday in Philadelphia. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas gave up a home run to leadoff man Kyle Schwarber in the first and was hit hard in the four-run third. The 29-year-old eventually settled down, retiring the last seven hitters he faced, but the damage had already been done. Montas made only two appearances in the preseason and may need a little time to regain his form. Surrounded by trade rumors all spring, he'll be given every opportunity to right the ship and showcase his abilities.
Apr 3 2022Manager Mark Kotsay said Sunday that Montas will start the Athletics' Opening Day game Friday in Philadelphia, Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Kotsay said the Athletics planned all along to have Montas take the hill for the opener, it became more apparent that the right-hander would get the nod after Oakland dealt Sean Manaea to San Diego earlier Sunday. Montas could be the next domino to fall in the Athletics' ongoing fire sale, but for the time being, he'll operate as the club's clear No. 1 starter. He enjoyed an excellent 2021 campaign for Oakland, covering a career-high 187 frames and finishing with a 13-9 record to go with a 3.37 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 207:57 K:BB.
Mar 27 2022Montas allowed four earned runs on six hits and a walk across three innings in a Cactus League loss to the Mariners on Sunday. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander allowed a first-inning home run to Eugenio Suarez and pitched to plenty of more contact over his three frames. Montas' struggles were in sharp contrast to his first outing against the Royals on Tuesday, when he'd logged 2.2 scoreless frames. Despite the rocky stint Sunday, Montas still projects as Oakland's top starter if he isn't traded ahead of the regular season.
Mar 22 2022Montas started Tuesday's Cactus League loss to the Royals and fired 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits while recording a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander, who, along with rotation mate Sean Manaea, has been the subject of trade rumors in recent days, faced 11 batters. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports Montas hit 96 mph on the radar gun in four of his first five pitches and logged 41 offerings overall. Montas also utilized both his splitter and slider effectively, and if he remains with the team, he's considered the leading candidate to serve as the Opening Day starter versus the Phillies on April 8.
Sep 30 2021Montas allowed two runs (zero earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings Wednesday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was excellent once again as he finished the regular season strong. He limited the Mariners to just four hits and gave up two unearned runs due to a pair of fielding errors in the sixth. Jared Kelenic would drive in both runs with a double in the gap to right center field. The 32-year-old Montas had an electric final month of the season, going 4-0 over eight starts with a 1.59 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 55:18 K:BB. Montas had an off year during last year's shortened season but has bounced back remarkably in 2021 to lead the A's pitching staff. He'll finish the year with a 13-9 record to go along with a 3.37 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a career-high 207 strikeouts to go against 57 walks over 187 innings.
Sep 24 2021Montas (13-9) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out eight across seven innings, earning the win over the Astros on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas surrendered a solo home run to Jose Altuve in the third inning for his lone earned run. Otherwise, he kept the Astros in check and allowed just one other hit Tuesday. He posted a quality start in six of his last seven appearances. The 28-year-old has a 3.48 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 200 strikeouts in 181 innings. He is just the 11th pitcher to reach 200 punchouts this season.
Sep 19 2021Montas got a no-decision in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Angels, allowing one hit and four walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Other than a two-out two-on jam in the third, Montas breezed through Los Angeles' lineup and was in line for his fourth straight win until Sergio Romo blew the lead in the ninth. After a rocky first three months, Montas has a 2.40 ERA across 14 turns since the start of July.
Sep 15 2021Montas didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Royals after allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks across 3.1 innings, fanning four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had won each of his previous three outings and was in a run of four straight quality starts, but he didn't have his best stuff Tuesday. Fortunately for him, the opposing starter, Jackson Kowar, struggled even more -- and that allowed Montas to settle with a no-decision. It's worth noting this was the first time Montas gave up more than three earned runs since June 26.
Sep 9 2021Montas improved to 12-9 on Wednesday after limiting the White Sox to one run on six hits and two walks while striking out seven in Oakland's 5-1 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas' placement on the restricted list last week due to visa concerns resulted in him being bumped back a day in the rotation, but it didn't disrupt his stellar form since the All-Star break. He tamed a potent White Sox lineup en route to collecting his third win in as many starts, and the seven innings tied his longest outing of the season. The right-hander has submitted a 2.26 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 76:19 K:BB in 63.2 innings through 10 second-half starts.
Sep 7 2021Montas (visa issues) was reinstated from the restricted list Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was placed on the restricted list for the team's trip to Toronto due to visa issues but can be activated now that the A's have returned to Oakland. Montas will start Wednesday at home against the White Sox.
Sep 3 2021Montas (visa issues) was placed on the restricted list Friday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas can't accompany the team to Canada for this weekend's three-game set against the Blue Jays due to visa issues, so he'll head to the restricted list for the next few days. The right-hander was originally scheduled to start Friday, but due to the visa problems the outing was moved up to Thursday. He pitched well against the Tigers, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over 6.2 innings to pick up the victory.
Sep 2 2021Montas (11-9) picked up the win Thursday after holding the Tigers to three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out seven across 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The A's tried to get Montas through seven, but the right-hander couldn't go the extra distance. He recorded two outs before Akil Baddoo launched a two-run homer on his 104th and final pitch. Montas left the game with an 8-3 lead en route to his 11th win of the season. The 28-year-old has now punched out at least six batters in each of his last 10 starts. He'll bring a 3.68 ERA and 1.20 WHIP into his next projected outing Wednesday against the White Sox.
Sep 1 2021Montas will start Thursday's game against the Tigers, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas originally lined up to pitch Friday at Toronto, but he'll be moved up a day to avoid potential visa concerns for a trip to Canada. Sean Manaea, Thursday's originally scheduled starter, will simply be pushed back to start Friday.
Aug 28 2021Montas (10-9) earned the win Saturday against the Yankees after tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas secured his 10th win of the season in style, hurling seven scoreless frames against one of the best offenses in the American League -- and one of the hottest teams in all of baseball. While he's been inconsistent at times and went through a rough patch in June, where he posted a 5.28 ERA across five starts, he has turned things around of late and he's now given up one or fewer runs in three of his last four appearances, including tossing two straight scoreless outings. He has also fanned at least six in each of his last nine starts.
Aug 22 2021Montas fired seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine in the loss to the Giants on Sunday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas allowed just four total baserunners across seven innings. It is the second time in his last five starts that he fired seven shutout innings. He left the game with the lead, but A.J. Puk surrendered a home run to lose the game. Montas has a 3.84 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with a solid 10.1 K/9 in 143 innings this season.
Aug 17 2021Montas (9-9) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings as the A's fell 5-2 to the White Sox. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He wasn't at his best and needed 99 pitches (60 strikes) to record 15 outs, but Montas also didn't get much run support. The outing snapped a string of six straight quality starts for the right-hander, and since the beginning of July, Montas boasts a 2.79 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 60:15 K:BB through 48.1 innings.
Aug 11 2021Montas did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's win over Cleveland, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Cleveland got to Montas for a pair of runs in the first inning -- one on a Jed Lowrie throwing error and the other on a Harold Ramirez RBI single -- but the right-hander settled in and put zeroes on the board in each of his final five frames. It was the sixth straight quality start for Montas, who lowered his ERA to 3.98 on the season. He'll take a 9-8 record and 146:36 K:BB in 131 innings into his next start, tentatively scheduled for next week on the road against the White Sox.
Aug 4 2021Montas allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out eight in six innings in a no-decision versus San Diego on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite a quality start, the right-hander left the game in position for the loss. He got off the hook when Oakland rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extras. Montas continues to be a strikeout machine, and it was encouraging to see him avoid issuing a walk for the first time since June 10. The 28-year-old owns a 4.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 140:33 K:BB through 125 innings. He lines up for a road start in Cleveland next week.
Jul 29 2021Montas (9-8) won Thursday's 4-0 victory against the Angels, going seven innings and allowing three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas submitted his best start of the season Thursday, preventing any runner from passing second base and striking out 10 batters for the third time in four starts. This was the righty's first start surrendering no runs since April 16, his 109 pitches are a season high and the seven frames matches the campaign's best. Montas has now thrown four straight quality starts and lines up to face San Diego next week.
Jul 24 2021Montas allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 10 over six innings Friday against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas butted heads with Yusei Kikuchi on Friday as the two put on a clinic with 22 combined strikeouts. The 28-year-old Montas induced 24 whiffs, 13 of them coming on his splitter. He's now struck out 10 batters in two of his last three starts. All three runs he gave up came in the second after Cal Raleigh and Luis Torrens hit back-to-back homers off him. Montas owns a 4.34 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 122:30 K:BB over 112 innings and is set up for a start against the Angels next week.
Jul 17 2021Montas (8-8) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had little trouble until Cleveland scraped two runs together in the fifth inning. Oakland never pulled even, leaving Montas with his first loss since June 21. The 28-year-old has a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 112:29 K:BB through 106 innings this year. The right-hander will try to get back in the win column during next weekend's series in Seattle.
Jul 8 2021Montas (8-7) allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 across 6.2 innings to earn the win Thursday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas dominated the Astros and recorded double-digit strikeouts in a start for the second time this season. He backed that with 22 swinging strikes on 95 total pitches and has now surrendered two earned runs or less in each of his last three starts. Montas will enter the All-Star break with a 4.41 ERA with 105 strikeouts across 100 innings on the campaign.
Jul 2 2021Montas allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in Friday's loss to Boston. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas rolled through three shutout innings to start the outing before coughing up RBI base hits to Rafael Devers and Alex Verdugo in the fourth and fifth frames. He's given up two earned runs and pitched at least five innings in four of his last five starts, lowering his ERA to 4.63. He maintained his 7-7 record after a second consecutive no-decision. Montas is projected to take the mound in Houston next week.
Jun 26 2021Montas took the no-decision in Saturday's 6-5 loss to San Francisco, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas rebounded nicely from last start's eight runs allowed, surrendering both of his runs on a LaMonte Wade two-run home run. The five total baserunners were the second fewest in any of Montas' 16 starts as he looks to regain his excellent 2019 form.
Jun 21 2021Montas (7-7) allowed eight runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Texas got to Montas right out of the gate, tacking on five runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer by Andy Ibanez. He settled in for four scoreless innings before he ran into trouble again in the sixth, giving up another three-run shot, this time by Jose Trevino. It was the third time that Montas has allowed six or more runs in a start this season, raising his season ERA to 4.79. He's 2-5 with a 4.65 ERA over his last seven outings. Montas is lined up to face the Giants on the road this weekend.
Jun 16 2021Montas (7-6) earned the win over the Angels on Tuesday, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas entered the contest having been tagged with a loss in four of his past five outings, though he registered a solid 3.54 ERA over that span. The right-hander snapped the stretch of misfortune against the Angels, picking up the win and notching his seventh quality start of the season. He induced 16 swinging strikes in the contest and collected eight punchouts for the second straight start. Montas has held opponents without a long ball in four consecutive starts and has allowed more than three earned runs only once since April 21. He tentatively lines up to next face Texas on the road Monday.
Jun 11 2021Montas (6-6) was tagged with the loss Thursday against the Royals, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits across 6.1 innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas has gone 1-4 over his last five starts, but he owns a 3.54 ERA and impressive peripheral stats in that span -- 1.32 WHIP, 10.9 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 -- meaning he's pitched better than what his ERA indicates of late. He might have just two quality starts since the beginning of May, but Montas has been remarkably consistent on the mound. His next start is scheduled for next week at home against the Angels.
Jun 4 2021Montas (6-5) notched the win against Colorado on Friday, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was staked to an early 6-0 lead and pitched just long enough to secure his sixth win. Montas yielded a trio of runs between the third and fourth innings and threw 48 of 69 pitches for strikes. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Montas, those his two strikeouts Friday were a season low. He'll carry a 4.52 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come on the road against Kansas City on Thursday.
May 29 2021Montas (5-5) took the loss Saturday as the A's were downed 4-0 by the Angels, giving up four unearned runs on six hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the game still scoreless in the top of the fifth inning and runners on the corners, David Fletcher hit a grounder to Matt Olson, who threw home attempting to cut down the runner from third. Aramis Garcia couldn't handle the toss and was charged with an error, ending Montas' shutout bid, and the rest of the Angels' runs came later that inning with two outs. The right-hander still saw his ERA fall to 4.45, and he'll take a 63:17 K:BB through 58.2 innings into his next outing.
May 25 2021Montas (5-4) was tagged with the loss Monday against the Mariners after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks while fanning 11 across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he took his second straight loss, the 11 strikeouts represented a season high. The long ball has been an issue for the right-hander, who has now given up a career-high 11 homers in just 53 innings (1.9 HR/9). Montas will carry a 4.92 ERA into his next start, scheduled for Saturday at home against the Angels.
May 19 2021Montas (5-3) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas struggled out of the gate by surrendering three hits, one walk and both of his earned runs in the opening frame. However, he managed to settle in from there and allowed only four singles and one free pass across his final four innings. Despite racking up six strikeouts, Montas backed those punch outs with only eight swinging strikes on 98 total pitches. Across 47 innings for the season, Montas has maintained a 4.79 ERA with a 45:13 K:BB across 47 innings. He currently lines up to make his next start Monday against the Mariners.
May 14 2021Montas (5-2) allowed one run on four hits and a walk over six innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas cruised through five scoreless frames before serving up a solo shot to Josh Donaldson in the sixth. He earned his third consecutive win and allowed fewer than two runs for the first time in his last five outings. The 6-foot-2 right-hander lowered his season ERA to 4.93 through 42 frames. Montas is in line to face the Astros at home next week.
May 8 2021Montas (4-2) earned the win Saturday against the Rays after posting 5.1 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas barely qualified for the win in this one, and he ended just outs away from what would've been his fifth quality start over his last six appearances. He's been prone to have an occasional down game here and there, but Montas has been getting the job done as one of the most important hurlers in the A's pitching staff. He owns a 5.50 ERA and a 35:8 K:BB through 36 innings in 2021.
May 3 2021Montas (3-2) allowed three runs on a walk and seven hits over six innings Monday, striking out four and picking up a win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from a third inning where the Blue Jays tallied five singles and three runs, Montas kept Toronto's bats fairly quiet. He now has four quality starts over his last five outings and lowered his season ERA to 5.87. The 28-year-old righty is expected to face the Rays at home this weekend.
Apr 27 2021Montas (2-2) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings as the A's were downed 4-3 by the Rays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw 73 of 105 pitches for strikes as he delivered his third quality start in five trips to the mound, but Montas would up on the wrong end of the decision thanks largely to a Brett Phillips homer in the sixth inning. Montas will carry a 6.20 ERA and 25:7 K:BB through 24.2 innings into his next outing Sunday at home against the Orioles.
Apr 21 2021Montas didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 13-12 extra-inning win over the Twins, surrendering six runs on nine hits -- including three home runs -- over four innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander tossed 56 of 76 pitches for strikes but his command within the zone left a lot to be desired, as he served up three doubles in addition to two blasts by Nelson Cruz and one by Josh Donaldson. Montas will drag a 6.75 ERA and more palatable 20:5 K:BB through 18.2 innings into his next start Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
Apr 16 2021Montas (2-1) allowed two hits and a walk over six scoreless frames Friday, striking out seven and earning a win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an ugly outing against the Dodgers to start the season, Montas has put together back-to-back wins in impressive outings. In his six shutout innings Friday, no Tiger made it past first base. Over his last two starts, the 28-year-old righty has yielded just one run while striking out 12 batters across 12 innings. Montas will carry a 4.91 ERA into next Wednesday's home contest against the Twins.
Apr 10 2021Montas (1-1) gave up one run on six hits and a walk while striking out five across six innings in Saturday's win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had a woeful debut against the Dodgers, but he bounced back quickly and limited the damage to just one run while also recording his first quality start of the campaign. Montas is expected to lead the A's pitching staff and his next scheduled start will come at home against the Tigers on April 17.
Apr 5 2021Montas (0-1) gave up seven runs on seven hits and three walks while fanning four across 2.2 innings in Monday's loss against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas couldn't have wished for a worse season debut, as he faced one of the deepest lineups in all of baseball and wasn't able to get out of the third inning -- he recorded eight outs and allowed seven runs. Montas, who was slowed down towards the end of spring training due to a ripped cuticle, will attempt to bounce back in his next start -- scheduled for April 10 on the road against the Astros.
Mar 31 2021Montas (finger) is tentatively lined up to make his first start of the season in Monday's series opener against the Dodgers, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas would have been on track to start in the Athletics' season-opening four-game series with the Astros this weekend, but those plans were foiled after he suffered a torn cuticle on his right middle finger during his final Cactus League start last week. The Athletics don't seem particularly concerned about the issue, but Montas will still need to complete a simulated game Wednesday without any setbacks before he's confirmed as a member of the Opening Day rotation. Since the Athletics want to give him his normal four days off following the simulated game, he won't be available to make his 2021 debut until Monday.
Mar 25 2021Montas (finger) will throw a sim game next week prior to Opening Day to determine his status to begin the season, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was removed from his appearance Thursday with a ripped cuticle. Manager Bob Melvin told reporters that the team will feel "okay" if Montas can reach 70 pitches in the sim game. That leaves his status for the team's opening series of the regular season uncertain.
Mar 20 2021Montas allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk across three innings in a Cactus League loss to the Cubs on Friday. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas' biggest mistake resulted in a solo home run by Willson Contreras in the second inning, but he was otherwise encouragingly sharp for the second time in as many spring starts. The right-hander has posted an impressive 6:1 K:BB across six Cactus League frames. and Shayna Rubin of The Mercury News reports he was able to hit 96-98 mph with his fastball/sinker while also using his splitter effectively and crossing the 50-pitch threshold Friday.
Mar 15 2021Montas fired three scoreless innings in a Cactus League loss to the White Sox on Sunday, allowing two hits and no walks while recording two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports Montas consistently hit 95-97 mph with his fastball and even ticked up to 99 mph at one point. The right-hander also officially began the process of reincorporating a splitter that had worked very effectively back in his career-best 2019, but one that he'd largely abandoned last season. "That's something I think will help me like it helped in the past," Montas said of throwing the splitter more. "I want to be able to work on it and make sure it's ready for the season."
Mar 10 2021Montas is expected to be ready to begin the 2021 season in the rotation, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had been dealing with some mild residual breathing issues after he tested positive for COVID-19 in February, but he recently hit 98 mph during a sim game. Manager Bob Melvin said that the team "didn't see any ill effects" during his throwing session. Barring any setbacks, the right-hander should open the season in the rotation and could potentially serve as the team's Opening Day starter.
Mar 9 2021Montas, who is still ramping up to his Cactus League debut after returning from COVID-19, is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game sometime this week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was able to throw a bullpen session Saturday without setbacks, setting up the opportunity to face live hitters. Montas has reported some mild residual breathing issues from his recent illness, but he's considered to be very close to full health at this point.
Mar 3 2021Montas, who was cleared to join spring training Thursday after a bout with COVID-19, is still experiencing some light chest congestion but has been able to get through workouts without issue thus far, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander also dealt with body aches and headaches while going through the virus, but he's been free of those since quarantining in his Arizona home for 14 days. Montas has been in the process of ramping back up after his late start, although he was throwing live bullpens before the diagnosis. The soon-to-be 28-year-old is trying to focus on having fun on the mound again in 2021 after a mostly miserable 2020 in which he produced a 5.60 ERA and 1.51 WHIP, and he's also looking to reincorporate a splitter that worked very effectively for him in 2019 after relying heavily on just his fastball and slider last season.
Feb 27 2021Montas, who was cleared to join spring training Thursday after a stay on the COVID-19 injured list, has already begun his ramp-up process, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has already begun a throwing program, and manager Bob Melvin has confirmed Montas will be on the same schedule as the rest of the staff, but just a bit behind in the actual implementation. Montas is expected to progress from throwing bullpens to facing hitters in simulated situations in coming days, and he'll naturally have a chance to see action in multiple Cactus League games.
Feb 25 2021Montas was cleared to join his teammates Thursday following a brief stay on the COVID-19 injured list, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas tested positive for the virus prior to camp and missed the first few workouts. With Opening Day still over a month away, he should still have enough time to get up to full speed by the start of the season.
Feb 19 2021Montas landed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The news is not unexpected after reports emerged Wednesday that Montas tested positive for the virus. A timeline for his arrival in camp has not yet been provided, so it's possible his buildup winds up being delayed enough that he's not at full strength by Opening Day. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the Athletics to add new signee Yusmeiro Petit.
Feb 17 2021Montas has tested positive for COVID-19 and is not in camp to begin spring training, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was dominant in 2019 but struggled last season with a 5.60 ERA and 60:23 K:BB over 53 innings. The right-hander ended the season on a high note with a 13-strikeout performance against the Mariners, but he'll be sidelined to begin spring training after manager Bob Melvin revealed Wednesday that he's dealing with COVID-19. It's not clear whether he's experiencing symptoms, and a timetable for his arrival at camp hasn't been revealed. When he's fully healthy, Montas should serve as one of the top starters for the Athletics.
Jan 15 2021Montas signed a one-year, $1.8 million deal with the Athletics on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas didn't seem to be pitching like his normal self last season, logging a 5.60 ERA and 1.51 WHIP. His splitter, which was a dominant pitch for him in 2019, was much more hittable in 2020 and his groundball rate plummeted. It's possible he wasn't right physically, or perhaps his excellent 2020 was fueled by the performance-enhancing substance Ostarine, which he received an 80-game suspension for that year. A 13-strikeout game in which he allowed zero earned runs against the Mariners on Sept. 27 provides some hope that he can still return to his peak form.
Oct 9 2020Montas allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Astros on Thursday in Game 4 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas showed signs of life with his 13-K gem on the final day of the regular season, but he was unable to carry that success over into the playoffs. Houston hung a five spot on Montas in the fourth inning on Michael Brantley and Carlos Correa home runs. Montas struggled to the tune of a 7.23 ERA in the month of August and it did not get a whole lot better; he heads into the offseason having allowed multiple home runs in three of his final four starts (postseason included).
Oct 1 2020Montas will be available out of the bullpen for Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series against the White Sox on Thursday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A disappointing regular season in which Montas struggled to a 5.60 ERA in 11 starts led to him not being given the starting nod for any of the three games of the series. He does have experience as a reliever, as 30 of his 70 big-league appearance have come out of the pen, though the last of those came in 2018.
Sep 27 2020Montas struck out 13 while allowing two runs (zero earned) on four hits and two walks across six innings in Sunday's win over Seattle. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander entered the start in a major funk, having allowed 29 runs across in last 24 innings. He found his groove Sunday, however, setting a season-high in punch outs while working through the sixth inning for the first time since Aug. 8. The Mariners were able to score single runs in the first and second innings, but both were unearned as a result of errors by Marcus Semien and Jake Lamb. The A's will certainly feel more confident in using Montas in the postseason after his strong outing, though it's currently unclear if they plan on using him as a starter or reliever.
Sep 22 2020Montas (3-5) took the loss against the Dodgers on Tuesday, pitching four innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas made his first start since Sept. 13 after going on paternity leave last Monday, but the right-hander was unable to use the extra rest to halt his recent struggles. He yielded a season-high three home runs in the loss and failed to reach the fifth inning for the fourth time in his last six starts. Montas lines up to start Oakland's final game of the season against Seattle on Sunday as he attempts to get back on track heading into the playoffs.
Sep 20 2020Montas will start Tuesday's game against the Dodgers, John Hickey of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was reinstated from the paternity list Friday and will rejoin the rotation in the series opener against the Dodgers. Montas has a 5.86 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 44:20 K:BB through 43 innings and will have a tough matchup against a Los Angeles offense that leads the league in homers (100) and total runs (309).
Sep 19 2020Montas, who was reinstated from the paternity list Friday, is slated to draw his next start in the three-game series against the Dodgers that begins Tuesday, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was placed on the paternity list Monday, a day after suffering his fourth loss of the season against the Rangers. The right-hander is trying to right the ship before the postseason, but in the Dodgers, he'll draw about the toughest assignment this side of the Yankees with which to attempt do that. More details on exactly which day Montas will take the hill should be available in coming days.
Sep 18 2020Montas was reinstated from the paternity list Friday, according to an A's press release. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The A's already have their starters set for Friday and Saturday with Chris Bassitt and Jesus Luzardo, but this frees up Montas to start Sunday agains the Giants if Oakland decides that's the way it wants to go. Montas has an ugly 5.86 ERA in nine starts this season and has only one victory in his last five outings. He has not made it through six innings in any of those five games.
Sep 14 2020Montas was placed on the paternity list Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Players typically spend around three days on the paternity list. If Montas misses no more time than that, the move will have no effect on his playing time, as his spot in the rotation isn't due up until Saturday against San Francisco. It's possible that pandemic-related protocols delay him for a day or two upon his return, however.
Sep 13 2020Montas (3-4) yielded four runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking the loss against Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through five innings, Montas had allowed just one run on a solo shot by Derek Dietrich. However, his outing was ruined by Rougned Odor's three-run blast in the sixth. It was the fourth time in his last five starts that he allowed four or more runs. Montas will carry a 5.86 ERA into Saturday's home contest against the Giants.
Sep 8 2020Montas (3-3) earned the win in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader in Houston after allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas surrendered 18 earned runs and had an 11:9 K:BB across his previous three outings, so Tuesday's performance was a welcome sight. The 27-year-old has a 5.73 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through 37.2 innings and will look to build on that effort Sunday versus the Rangers.
Aug 29 2020Montas (2-3) took the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's twin bill against Houston, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas needed 76 pitches to get 10 outs in the short start. He fell behind in the first inning when Kyle Tucker cleared the bases with a three-run triple and gave up two more runs in the second on a two-run blast off the bat of George Springer. Montas pitched well over his first four starts, but since returning from back tightness Aug. 18 he has yielded 18 earned runs in 9.2 innings, pushing his ERA to 6.06 on the season. The right-hander will try to bounce back when he returns home to face San Diego on Friday.
Aug 23 2020Montas allowed four earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five across 4.2 innings Sunday against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas allowed a three-run home run to Shohei Ohtani in the third inning, spoiling his outing. Though he allowed only one other run, Montas showed a concerning inability to find the zone -- he began only 11 of the 24 batters he faced with a strike and only 56 of his 96 total pitches went for strikes -- on his way to another subpar outing. Since missing a start due to back tightness, Montas has allowed worked only 6.1 innings across two outings while allowing 13 earned runs. For the season, he now has a 5.22 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 16 walks across 29.1 frames. Montas will look to get back on track in his next turn through the rotation, currently penciled in for Friday at Houston.
Aug 18 2020Montas (2-2) allowed nine earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out one across 1.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was both hit hard and wild in this short outing, as he allowed two extra-base hits, three walks and threw a wild pitch in the first inning. That led to five earned runs, but the trouble continued in the following frame, as he allowed a leadoff homer as well as two singles and a walk prior to being pulled. It was a disastrous start for Montas, who was making his first start since being scratched on Friday with back tightness. He'll look to get back on track in his next turn through the rotation, currently penciled in for Sunday against the Angels.
Aug 16 2020Montas (back) felt good during a throwing session Sunday and is scheduled to return to the Oakland rotation for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was scratched with back tightness ahead of his scheduled turn Friday against the Giants, and though he was initially considered a candidate to start Sunday's series finale, the Athletics elected to take a more cautious approach with the right-hander, who threw a side session instead. Due to the brevity of his absence, Montas isn't expected to face any major restrictions Tuesday as he takes the hill for his fifth start of 2020. Montas owns a 1.57 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB across 23 innings.
Aug 15 2020Montas (back) won't start Sunday against the Giants, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas was scratched from his scheduled start Friday, but there was hope that he'd be able to make a start Sunday. However, he'll instead try to start sometime during the team's series against the Diamondbacks early in the week. Mike Fiers will start in the series finale against the Giants on Sunday.
Aug 14 2020Montas was scratched from his scheduled start Friday against the Giants due to upper-back tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The severity of the injury is not yet clear. Montas has been excellent in his first four starts this season, posting a 1.57 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Jesus Luzardo, who had been expected to start Saturday, will start Friday in his place.
Aug 8 2020Montas (2-1) earned the win Saturday against the Astros after allowing only two hits over seven shutout innings. He recorded five strikeouts and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yuli Gurriel hit a one-out double during the second inning, but that was the only time a baserunner reached second base with Montas on the mound. The 27-year-old is off to a fantastic start in 2020 with a 1.57 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB over 23 innings (four starts). Montas will look to keep things rolling his next time out Friday in San Francisco.
Aug 4 2020Montas (1-1) earned the win in Monday's 11-1 victory over the Mariners. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball, giving up four hits and four walks while striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas delivered his best outing of the season by a wide margin, as he notched his first quality start of the campaign while recording a season-high nine strikeouts. He will carry a 2.25 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for Aug. 8 at home against the Astros.
Jul 29 2020Montas (0-1) took the loss Wednesday versus the Rockies after giving up two runs on five hits and two walks across five innings. He recorded three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was fortunate to allow only the two runs, as he labored through the early innings and gave up a bases-loaded single off the outfield wall that managed to score only one run. Montas finished at 77 pitches after throwing 81 pitches during his first outing, though he did throw an additional inning Wednesday. The right-hander will carry a 3.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 8:5 K:BB through nine innings into Tuesday's start against the Rangers.
Jul 24 2020Montas did not factor into the decision during Friday's win over the Angels, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out five across four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first Opening Day start, Montas stayed strong until the fourth inning. After issuing back-to-back walks, the 27-year-old gave up his first run of the game via an RBI single to Brian Goodwin. Despite an 80-game suspension last season, the right-hander had a breakout campaign during which he went 9-2 with a career-best 2.63 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 16 starts.
Jul 18 2020Manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that Montas will be the Athletics' Opening Day starter, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Melvin raved about Montas' three-inning outing in a simulated game Monday, and the right-hander was officially named the starter for the team's season opener against the Angels on July 24. The 27-year-old was suspended for 80 games last season but posted a career-best 2.63 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 96 innings across 16 starts and impressed in three Cactus League outings this spring.
Jul 17 2020Montas, whose three-inning stint in a simulated game Monday manager Bob Melvin described as 'borderline electric," is the favorite to draw an Opening Day start, Jerry McDonald of The Mercury News reports. "He's got all the talent in the world. His stuff is some of the best I've seen," rotation mate Mike Fiers said. "For him I think it's all mental, just throwing strikes and trusting his stuff in the zone. Before everything went down last year he was one of the best pitchers in the league. I'm excited to watch him." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas' chances of cutting the proverbial ribbon on the 2020 regular season for the Athletics have likely been improved by Fiers' slightly delayed arrival in summer camp, but the right-hander certainly has the stuff befitting a staff ace. The 27-year-old worked around an 80-game suspension last season to post a 9-2 record, 2.63 ERA and 103:23 K:BB in 16 starts, and he's remained on the right track with a perfect ERA in three Cactus League outings and impressive velocity in bullpen sessions and simulated games in summer camp. Notably, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier in the week that Montas wasn't designated to pitch in either of the Athletics' exhibition games against the Giants on Monday or Tuesday, furthering the notion he'll get the call Opening Night against the Angels next Friday.
Jul 8 2020Montas was impressive in Tuesday's simulated game at Athletics summer camp despite giving up a home run to Franklin Barreto, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had already gotten camp off to a strong start by demonstrating his usual velocity during a bullpen session, but he was able to continue impressing Tuesday while facing some his talented teammates. Montas continues to insist he's already geared up to take on close to a normal early-season workload, which, if true, has him within range of manager Bob Melvin's expectations. "Montas looked good. He tells me he could go close to five innings right now," Melvin said. "I don't think we're there yet with all of our starters, but if we could get to 80 or 85 pitches for their first game, that's kind of what we're targeting."
Jul 5 2020Montas' velocity stood out during his bullpen session in the Athletics' first day of summer camp Saturday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas had posted a video to social media in late May that showed him ringing up triple digits on the radar gun, and he demonstrated that wasn't any fluke in Saturday's session. Catcher Sean Murphy vouched for Montas' velocity, noting how sore his hand was after catching the right-hander. Montas had tuned up for what was expected to be a prominent 2020 role with 5.2 scoreless innings in Cactus League play, and he'll now have a chance to prep against his teammates in summer camp for the shortened regular season.
Apr 14 2020Montas allowed two unearned runs across 5.2 innings over three Cactus League starts before spring training was suspended. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hard-throwing right-hander didn't allow that pair of runs until his third and final appearance of spring, which came against the Brewers on March 8. Although he naturally didn't get fully stretched out due to the abrupt interruption in play, Montas will presumably have a chance to do so during any ramp-up period to the 2020 season. He's expected to slide into the No. 2 spot in the rotation behind Sean Manaea to start the season, although he arguably generated an ace-quality performance during a 2019 campaign in which he lost 80 games due to a PED suspension.
Mar 10 2020Montas reverted to occasionally trying out a quick pitch during his third Cactus League start, Sunday versus the Brewers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander deployed the tactic frequently during a rough 2017 season, when he bounced between the Athletics and Triple-A Nashville and was hit hard in both locales. Montas is an exponentially better pitcher these days, so he's likely to use the strategy only on occasion when he wants to add an element of surprise. Montas allowed two unearned runs on four hits across 2.2 innings against Milwaukee, a so-so performance coming off two strong starts to begin the spring. "My fastball was coming out good," Montas said. "I was just trying to get ready for the season."
Mar 3 2020Montas started Monday's Cactus League win over the Cubs and fired two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and one walk while also hitting a batter. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the heels of firing a perfect frame in his spring debut last Wednesday, Montas put together another mostly dominant outing over 32 pitches versus a Cubs lineup that was notably missing both Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. The right-hander got some good work in, however, and Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports the control issues that led to the free pass and hit batsman could have been due to some of the experimentation Montas was doing with his pitch selection. "He was working on his splitter and slider," manager Bob Melvin said. "Got a little out of whack for a minute. He's usually quite the strike-thrower. But he ended up finding it again."
Feb 27 2020Montas started Wednesday's Cactus League win over the Diamondbacks and fired a perfect first inning during which he recorded a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas needed just 15 pitches to get through his one frame, nine of which found the strike zone. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports the right-hander hit 99 mph with his fastball and looked sharp after pitching 25 innings in the Dominican Winter League and generating a 1.44 ERA. Montas felt the extra offseason work was necessary after he missed 80 games in 2019 due to a PED suspension, and he's already made an early impression on manager Bob Melvin with how prepared he arrived in camp. "We're looking for him to replicate what he did last year and what he did in the start he had late in the season after sitting out for so long," Melvin said. "He's eager to contribute to his team for a full season. He wants to be one of the high-end starters we have."
Feb 20 2020Montas, who's coming off a career-best season in 2019, was impressive while facing live hitters for the first time Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander could be poised for his best year yet in 2020 if he can remain healthy, and Thursday's strong showing was certainly an excellent first step. Montas was subject to an 80-game suspension for violating MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program last season, but he still managed career bests in wins (nine), ERA (2.63), WHIP (1.11) and strikeouts (103) across 16 starts. Given his mid-90s fastball and body of work in 2019, Montas could ultimately prove to be the ace of the staff this season if he manages to stay on the field.
Sep 26 2019Montas will be available out of the bullpen during Oakland's weekend series against Seattle, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Montas fired six innings Wednesday against the Angels, but skipper Bob Melvin noted Thursday that the right-hander will be ready to go in relief if needed. He'll aim to help Oakland lock up a postseason berth over the weekend with four contests remaining in the regular season, though he's not eligible to pitch if they do make the playoffs.
Sep 25 2019Montas gave up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six through six innings in a no-decision agains the Angels on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his return from an 80-game suspension, Montas allowed a solo home run in the second inning but fired four scoreless frames to register the quality start. The 26-year-old seemed to show no rust, providing optimism for 2020 with a fine performance. Montas finishes the season with a 9-2 record with a 2.63 ERA and 103 strikeouts through 96 innings.
Sep 24 2019Montas will start Wednesday's game against the Angels, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is the first day he is eligible to return from suspension, and the A's will waste no time handing him the ball. The team wanted to keep him working as a starter given the success he had in the role earlier this year. He is fully stretched out and obviously well rested. Montas wouldn't start the wild-card game (that will be Mike Fiers or Sean Manaea) but he could be a part of the rotation for the ALDS if Oakland advances to that round.
Sep 21 2019Montas (suspension) is eligible to return for Wednesday's game against the Angels, although there's no definitive word on his projected usage over the final five games of the season, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bob Melvin unsurprisingly offered nothing in the way of a framework for how the right-hander might be deployed after 80 games away from the team. However, it's worth noting Montas has been on a normal throwing schedule recently at the team's minor-league complex in Arizona, and his arm is currently stretched out to approximately a 100-pitch workload. That potentially puts Montas in play as a multi-inning relief asset for Melvin, but it also leaves open the option of a spot start if the Athletics are able to clinch a playoff spot before the final day of the regular season and want to hold one of current co-aces Sean Manaea and Mike Fiers back for a Wild Card Game start.
Sep 7 2019Montas (suspension) has been working out at the Athletics' spring training facility in Arizona since late July and is preparing to return to the major-league roster Sept. 25 when first eligible, Athletics radio play-by-play broadcaster Vince Cotroneo reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As his 80-game suspension nears its end, Montas will be able to return to action in the minors beginning Sept. 10, with general manager David Forst already indicating the right-hander would pitch in games if any of the organization's affiliates are still competing in the postseason. If not, Montas will gear up for a return to the big leagues by pitching in simulated games before the Athletics formally reinstate him. Since he hasn't pitched at any level since June 20, Montas probably won't have sufficient time to stretch out for a starting role, but he should provide a boost to the Oakland bullpen for the final five games of the regular season. Since the suspension kept Montas off the 40-man roster beyond Aug. 31, he won't be eligible to pitch in the playoffs should the Athletics qualify.

May 23 2015Montas has a 3.60 ERA and a 26:12 K:BB over 30 innings at Double-A Birmingham so far this season. He has improved his slider this season, South Side Sox reports.Montas is a bit of a wildcard, as he has great arm strength, but needs to keep improving his secondary offerings, his command, and his ability to repeat his somewhat unorthodox delivery. With continued progress we could see him get a cup of coffee in September, with an eye towards a full-time major league stretch in 2016.
Mar 24 2015Montas was optioned to Double-A Birmingham on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times' Daryl Van Schouwen reports.Montas has jumped on the prospect radar after his performance in the Arizona Fall League and in spring training, but he still has some things to work on in the minor leagues if the White Sox plan to use him as a starting pitcher long term. It would not be surprising to see Montas get a late-season cup of coffee on the Southside if he has a strong run in the upper levels of the minors in the first half.
Mar 2 2015Pitching coach Don Cooper said Chris Sale's (foot) injury should allow for Montas to have more opportunities to pitch this spring, CSN Chicago reports.Montas is still a long shot to crack the MLB roster out of spring training, but it sounds like he will at least have the chance to pitch against more advanced batters, as well as receive tips and advice from the big league staff. Montas has only made one appearance above High-A, but a strong spring could put him on the short list of in-season injury replacements in the minors.
Dec 9 2014White Sox GM Rick Hahn said Monday that the plan is to let Montas continue to start for the time being, Doug Padilla of ESPNChicago.com reports.Montas was dominant in 2014 using primarily a fastball-slider combo, with his changeup mixed in only occasionally. There is some uncertainty as to whether he'll be able to get by as a starter in the majors with such a limited repertoire, but the White Sox will give him a while longer to prove himself in the rotation, having signed David Robertson on Monday to be their closer for the next several years.
Nov 20 2014The White Sox added Montas to their 40-man roster Thursday, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.Montas needed meniscus surgery on both knees in 2014, limiting him to just 15 starts during the minor league season, but he was exceptional in those 15 outings (1.44 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 8.9 K/9). The right-hander's repertoire is rather thin at the moment, and while he should be able to get by with his mid-90s fastball until his secondary stuff develops, there are questions about what his long-term role will be.
Aug 4 2014Montas (knee) threw a simulated game Monday and there's a chance he could pitch again in 2014, CSN Chicago's Dan Hayes reports. It was originally thought that Montas would probably be done for the season, but he may find his way back to the High-A Salem rotation in 2014. Through 10 starts prior to the injury, Montas had a 1.60 ERA and a 56:14 K:BB ratio in 62 innings at High-A.
