Jun 15 2025Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two total runs scored in Sunday's 8-2 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had gone 0-for-8 with three walks and five strikeouts over his previous four games. The catcher was able to do some damage Sunday, stretching the Padres' lead to 7-2 with a ninth-inning homer, his first long ball since May 4 versus the Pirates. Diaz is now at a .219/.292/.336 slash line with four homers, five doubles, 10 RBI, 20 runs scored and no stolen bases over 162 plate appearances. He has been in a fairly even timeshare with Martin Maldonado since the start of June, as neither backstop is doing much consistently with the bat, though Maldonado has the slight edge in playing time over the last week.
Jun 8 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat for the second time in the series and the fourth time in the past six contests. Martin Maldonado appears to have at least temporarily moved ahead of him on the depth chart, though Diaz could reclaim primary catching duties if his bat heats up.
Jun 6 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Brewers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will be idle for a second straight game while Martin Maldonado will serve behind home plate and bat ninth. Diaz has gone 3-for-24 with two runs, two RBI and eight strikeouts over his last 10 games.
Jun 5 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will rest for Thursday's day game after he went 1-for-4 while catching eight innings of Wednesday's 6-5 loss. Martin Maldonado will spell Diaz behind the plate in the series finale.
Jun 3 2025Diaz isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday marks the third time in San Diego's last four games that Martin Maldonado has started over Diaz, though the Padres typically still find a way to get Diaz a plate appearance or two every day.
Jun 1 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat for the second day in a row while Martin Maldonado receives another start behind the dish. Since he's still started six of the Padres' last 10 games overall, Diaz appears to be the team's preferred catching option, though that hasn't meant much for fantasy purposes. Diaz closed May with just six hits in 45 at-bats (.133 average) over his final 16 games of the month.
May 31 2025Diaz isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will give way to Martin Maldonado behind the plate after making three consecutive starts and going 1-for-11.
May 26 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Marlins on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For a second straight game, Martin Maldonado will start behind home plate while Diaz begins the contest in the dugout. Diaz has slashed .250/.278/.365 with six runs scored and a solo home run over 54 plate appearances since the beginning of May.
May 25 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game in Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is getting a routine breather after he had started behind the dish in each of the Padres' last three contests. Martin Maldonado will handle catching duties in the series finale.
May 21 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat for the second night in a row due to Martin Maldonado receiving another start behind the dish. Maldonado has gone 3-for-29 at the plate over his last 12 contests, so he doesn't yet seem to have mounted a serious case for supplanting Diaz as the Padres' preferred backstop.
May 20 2025Diaz is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a routine day off for Diaz, as Martin Maldonado will bat ninth and catch for Dylan Cease. Diaz has slashed .239/.314/.370 with three home runs, six RBI, 14 runs scored and a 10:20 BB:K across 103 plate appearances this season.
May 14 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Angels on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will ride the pine for a second straight game while Martin Maldonado starts behind home plate and bats ninth. Diaz has gone 8-for-25 with a solo home run and six runs scored since the beginning of May.
May 13 2025Diaz isn't in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will give way to Martin Maldonado behind the dish after the former went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in the series opener Monday.
May 7 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he'll be on the bench for the series finale while Martin Maldonado gets a turn behind the plate, Diaz seems to have re-established himself as the Padres' top backstop. Diaz started at catcher in each of the past three games, going 4-for-10 with a solo home run.
May 4 2025Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-0 victory versus the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz accounted for San Diego's second run with a solo blast to left field in the second inning. The veteran catcher has gone deep in each of his past two starts after hitting just one homer across his first 20 games of the campaign. Diaz has played slightly more than fellow backstop Martin Maldonado this year and is slashing .226/.314/.387 through 71 plate appearances.
May 1 2025Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz extended San Diego's lead to 2-0 in the third inning with a homer off Landen Roupp, his second this season. Following a rough 1-for-20 stretch, Diaz has now recorded back-to-back two-hit games, boosting his slash line to .214/.313/.339 with five RBI and eight runs scored across 65 plate appearances this year.
Apr 30 2025Diaz will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz and Martin Maldonado have now made 15 starts apiece behind the plate through the Padres' first 30 games of the season, but the former offers more offensive upside at this stage of his career and could eventually recapture the lion's share of the playing time at catcher. The Padres will hand Diaz his second straight start after he brought his season average up to .192 with a 2-for-4 performance in Tuesday's 7-4 win.
Apr 18 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Astros on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will hit the bench for Friday's series opener after going 0-for-3 with one run scored and one walk in his last start Wednesday against the Cubs. Martin Maldonado will start behind home plate and bat ninth against Houston right-hander Ryan Gusto.
Apr 15 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the second straight game on the bench for Diaz, who has a .233/.361/.267 slash line through 11 games this year. Martin Maldonado will receive another start behind the plate Tuesday, as each catcher has received nine starts through San Diego's first 18 contests of the season.
Apr 14 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Cubs on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will be on the bench Monday while Martin Maldonado serves behind home plate and bats ninth against Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon. Diaz has gone 4-for-16 with four walks, two runs scored and two RBI over his last five starts.
Apr 12 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Rockies on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Friday's series opener, but he'll begin Saturday's contest in the dugout. Martin Maldonado will serve behind home plate and bat ninth against Rockies right-hander Chase Dollander.
Apr 9 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat for the second day in a row while he's gotten off to a rough start to the 2025 season with a .208/.296/.208 slash line over eight games. The Padres will give Martin Maldonado another turn behind the dish Wednesday, though Diaz is still presumably viewed as the club's No. 1 backstop.
Apr 8 2025Diaz is not in the Padres' lineup against the Athletics on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since Diaz's last day off April 2, he has gone 2-for-13 with two walks in four games. The two hits came in the same game Saturday as he went hitless in the other three. Martin Maldonado is the starting catcher Tuesday and is batting ninth.
Apr 4 2025Diaz is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Cubs, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a routine day off for Diaz, who is 3-for-13 at the dish in the early going this season. Martin Maldonado will catch and bat ninth for the Padres in Friday's series opener.
Apr 2 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will get some rest for the day game after he went 0-for-7 while starting behind the dish in the first two contests of the series. Martin Maldonado will handle the catching duties for San Diego on Wednesday.
Mar 29 2025Diaz is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will sit for a second consecutive game Saturday, as the Padres will opt to give Martin Maldonado another start following his 2-for-3 performance Friday.
Mar 28 2025Diaz isn't in the lineup for Friday's game versus Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 2-for-3 with a strikeout during San Diego's Opening Day victory, but he'll give way behind the plate to Martin Maldonado in the team's second game of the season.
Mar 12 2025Diaz "seems to have moderately separated himself" in the competition to be the Padres' No. 1 catcher, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz first came to San Diego on a minor-league deal last August and ended up going just 4-for-21 over 24 regular-season games with the Padres. However, the offseason departure of Kyle Higashioka opened up a battle for the team's primary catcher role, and none of the club's backstops has seized hold of the opportunity this spring. Diaz is just 3-for-18 with five strikeouts and one walk, but Luis Campusano has been even less productive with a 2-for-16 line, while Brett Sullivan has gone 2-for-15 and Martin Maldonado is 0-for-13. Ethan Salas is viewed as the catcher of the future for San Diego, but he won't turn 19 until June and has just 33 plate appearances at Double-A under his belt. Cassavell speculates that Diaz's reputation as a good defender could earn him the starting role come Opening Day, though the catcher situation could be fluid throughout the campaign and could tilt at any time this spring if one of the backstops goes on a hot streak.
Jan 28 2025Diaz signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Padres on Tuesday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz joined the Padres on a minor-league deal in late August after being released by the Rockies. After being promoted, the former All-Star appeared in 24 games for San Diego, but he recorded just four hits across 21 at-bats. He became the team's number two catcher behind Kyle Higashioka following Luis Campusano's demotion to Triple-A El Paso in September. Diaz would remain the backup catcher for the postseason roster. With Higashioka now on the Rangers, Diaz has a shot to be in the Opening Day lineup for the Padres. His new contract includes a mutual option for 2026 and is pending a physical.
Sep 22 2024Diaz went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Saturday in a 6-2 victory versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz gave San Diego some extra cushion in the eighth inning with a two-run shot to left-center field. It was his sixth homer of the season and his first since joining the Padres in late August. In fact, prior to Saturday, Diaz -- who belted a career-high 18 long balls with the Rockies in 2021 -- hadn't gone deep since June 5, a stretch of 41 games.
Sep 1 2024The Padres selected Diaz's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old joined the Padres on a minor-league contract Aug. 26 and will join the big club Sunday as MLB rosters expand to 28 players. Diaz may not receive consistent playing time, and he should serve as the backup to Luis Campusano on Sunday as Kyle Higashioka manages flu-like symptoms.
Aug 31 2024The Padres are expected to call up Diaz from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being released by the Rockies on Aug. 16, Diaz signed a minor-league contract with the Padres 10 days later. He's gone 3-for-12 with three runs scored, one home run and six RBI across his three outings with El Paso, and he will join the Padres' roster when it expands to 28 players Sunday. Diaz joining the big club is timely, given that fellow catcher Kyle Higashioka was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to flu-like symptoms.
Aug 26 2024Diaz agreed to a minor-league contract with the Padres on Monday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was let go by the Rockies on Aug. 16 after hitting .196 with eight RBI and five runs scored in 28 games since July 1. He'll get a chance to start fresh in San Diego, where he figures to serve as depth behind the dish at Triple-A El Paso.
Aug 16 2024The Rockies released Diaz on Friday, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was reported earlier this week that Diaz had been placed on outright waivers, and now the Rockies will cut him loose after he went unclaimed. He's hitting just .196/.250/.268 since the All-Star break, but there will surely be interest in him once he can be had at the prorated minimum salary. Drew Romo has been called up to take Diaz's roster spot.
Aug 14 2024The Rockies placed Diaz on outright waivers Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After slashing .270/.315/.378 with 36 RBI across 327 plate appearances, Diaz is now available for any team willing to pay the remaining $1.5 million on his contract. If he goes unclaimed, the Rockies may keep him on the active roster or outright him to Triple-A Albuquerque, at which point Diaz would have the right to reject the assignment and enter free agency.
Aug 11 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll get a breather for the matinee contest after he started behind the dish in both of the first two games of the series. Jacob Stallings will draw the start at catcher Sunday.
Aug 8 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz started behind the plate in the first two games of the series, but he'll be given some rest as the Rockies and Mets conclude their three-game set with a matinee contest. Jacob Stallings will fill in for Diaz at catcher.
Aug 7 2024Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Tuesday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz delivered a pair of RBI knocks and tallied his first multi-hit game since July 10. He's appeared in 14 games since that date and has hit just .159 with three RBI and three runs scored. Diaz is still batting .275 for the season while lowering his strikeout rate to 18.3 percent.
Aug 4 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will receive a breather after he had started behind the plate in the first two contests of the series. Jacob Stallings will handle catching duties Sunday for the Rockies.
Aug 1 2024Diaz isn't in the Rockies' lineup Thursday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat for Thursday's series finale after going 2-for-8 with a run scored over the first two games of the series. Jacob Stallings will start behind the dish instead and bat eighth.
Jul 24 2024Diaz is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz returned to action for Tuesday's 6-0 loss after missing a couple games with a calf issue, but he'll be back on the bench for the Wednesday afternoon contest. Jacob Stallings will start at catcher for the Rockies.
Jul 23 2024Diaz (calf) will start at catcher and bat sixth Tuesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Calf soreness has kept Diaz out of Colorado's last two games, but he's feeling well enough to return behind the dish for Tuesday's contest. The 33-year-old backstop has slashed .184/.245/.204 with two RBI in 53 plate appearances since the beginning of July.
Jul 22 2024Diaz (calf) is absent from the Rockies' lineup Monday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz left in the third inning of Saturday's win over the Giants due to right calf tightness, and it appears to be bothering him enough to sit for a second straight game. Jacob Stallings will start behind home plate Monday and bat seventh against Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck.
Jul 21 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants after leaving Saturday's 4-3 win in the third inning with right calf tightness, Dennis Georgatos of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since Diaz had started at catcher in the first two contests of the series, he might have been due to receive a breather for Sunday's finale anyway, and the injury made it an even easier decision for the Rockies to hold him out. Jacob Stallings came off the bench to replace Diaz on Saturday and will get the starting nod Sunday. Consider Diaz day-to-day heading into the Rockies' three-game series with the Red Sox that begins Monday.
Jul 14 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will get a breather in the Rockies' final game before the All-Star break, affording Jacob Stallings a turn behind the dish. Upon returning from the injured list June 30, Diaz had started in 12 of the Rockies' ensuing 14 games, going just 11-for-50 (.220 average) with two extra-base hits (both doubles), two RBI and one run over that stretch.
Jul 11 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will receive a breather for Thursday's day game after he went 2-for-4 with an RBI while catching all nine innings of the Rockies' 6-5 win Wednesday night. Hunter Goodman will handle the catching duties for Colorado.
Jul 7 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Royals, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old started all seven games since he returned from the injured list last weekend, though he's still experienced a bit of tightness in his calf since being activated and hasn't pushed himself while running the bases. There's been no report that Diaz has further aggravated the injury, so his absence from the lineup Sunday is likely just a maintenance day. Jacob Stallings is receiving a turn behind the plate in the series finale.
Jul 4 2024Diaz said his calf is still a little bit tight Thursday, which is why he's not sprinting full out on the bases, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was reinstated from the 10-day injured list June 30 after nursing a left calf strain. Since his return, the catcher is 6-for-18 with two doubles. However, it appears the calf injury is still lingering, as the 33-year-old says he will be careful about it.
Jun 30 2024Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored Sunday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was activated from the injured list after three weeks and returned to serve as the designated hitter while hitting fifth. He collected a hit in his first plate appearance, showing no signs of rust. Diaz's return will likely push Jacob Stallings into a backup role and could end consistent playing time for Hunter Goodman.
Jun 29 2024Diaz (calf) ran on the field Friday and Saturday and has made good progress in his recovery, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bud Black seemed to offer a more positive outlook on Diaz's recovery than in recent days, though Black still declined to offer a timetable for Diaz's return. Positively, the manager suggested that Diaz will not need a rehab assignment before being activated from the injured list.
Jun 27 2024Manager Bud Black said Tuesday that Diaz (calf) will be out for at least another week, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has resumed baseball activities but is not sprinting at full speed and is still experiencing some soreness. The Rockies have stressed the importance of Diaz returning at full strength, so his absence could extend into the middle of July. Jacob Stallings should remain the team's primary catcher in the meantime.
Jun 20 2024The Rockies cleared Diaz (calf) to resume jogging Monday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Diaz looks to be making some progress in his recovery from the left calf strain that forced him to the injured list last Friday, he's still on track to spend more than the minimum 10 days on the shelf. The Rockies haven't yet provided a target date for Diaz's return from the IL, and Jacob Stallings should serve as Colorado's top backstop until Diaz is back in action.
Jun 16 2024Diaz (calf) hasn't resumed running since landing on the 10-day injured list Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is no longer walking with a limp, but he hasn't yet made enough progress in his recovery from a left calf strain to resume on-field work. The veteran backstop is without a clear target date for a return from the IL, and fantasy managers shouldn't count on him returning at any point during the Rockies' upcoming seven-game week.
Jun 14 2024The Rockies placed Diaz on the 10-day injured list Friday due to a left calf strain, retroactive to June 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was removed in the bottom half of the first inning of Monday's game against the Twins after straining his left calf while running out of the batter's box to first base. He was held out for the rest of the series against Minnesota with the hope he would be available for the weekend series against Pittsburgh, but the 33-year-old catcher will be on the shelf for an extended period of time. Jacob Stallings got the start for Diaz over the last two games of the series against the Twins, and the former figures to get most of the starts behind home plate in the latter's absence, though Hunter Goodman will provide some depth and will start at catcher for Saturday's game, per Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com.
Jun 12 2024Diaz (calf) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As expected, Diaz will get another day to rest his left calf injury. The hope is that he will be ready to play Friday in Denver versus the Pirates following the Rockies' off day Thursday, but his availability for the weekend isn't guaranteed. Jacob Stallings will start at catcher Wednesday.
Jun 11 2024Diaz (calf) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz tweaked his left calf in Monday's loss to the Twins and the expectation is that he won't be available for the remainder of the series. Jacob Stallings will do the catching Tuesday.
Jun 10 2024Diaz left Monday's game against the Twins due to a left calf injury, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is likely undergoing additional testing to uncover the extent of the calf injury. Jacob Stallings and Hunter Goodman would share time behind the plate if it's determined Diaz requires an extended absence, though it's still too early to know if he'll be placed on the injured list.
Jun 8 2024Diaz isn't in the Rockies' lineup Saturday against St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat Saturday after going 1-for-7 with two walks through the first two games of the series. Jacob Stallings will instead get the nod to start at catcher while batting sixth.
Jun 5 2024Diaz went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and two additional RBI in a 12-7 loss to the Reds on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After opening the scoring with an RBI groundout in the first inning, Diaz put the Rockies ahead 5-4 with a solo shot off Nick Martinez before adding a third RBI with a base hit in the seventh. It's the third multi-hit effort in four games for Diaz -- he's gone 7-for-16 in that span. The 33-year-old backstop is off to another strong start this year, slashing .306/.351/.452 with five homers, 27 RBI and 20 runs scored through 202 plate appearances.
Jun 2 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will receive a breather for the series finale in Los Angeles after he had started at catcher or designated hitter in each of the Rockies' previous six games. Jacob Stallings will handle catching duties Sunday in Diaz's stead.
May 25 2024Diaz isn't in the Rockies' lineup Saturday against the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 0-for-4 with a walk during Friday's series opener, and he'll now take a seat against Aaron Nola and the Phillies. Jacob Stallings will start in his place behind the dish and bat eighth.
May 23 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will be joined on the bench by Charlie Blackmon, Kris Bryant and Brendan Rodgers as the Rockies rest four key regulars for the day game after a night game. Jacob Stallings will fill in behind the plate in place of Diaz, who went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Wednesday's 4-3 win.
May 21 2024Diaz (hand) is in the Rockies' lineup Tuesday versus the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz missed four consecutive games for the Rockies due to a hand injury, and he had an additional day to recover with the team day off Monday. Jacob Stallings was starting in his place, but the former will return to the bench Tuesday.
May 19 2024Diaz (hand) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the fourth straight absence for Diaz as he continues to nurse a hand injury. He'll have Monday's team off day to aid in his recovery ahead of Tuesday's series opener in Oakland. Jacob Stallings will work behind the plate Sunday for Colorado.
May 18 2024Diaz (hand) isn't in the Rockies' lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Left hand soreness will cause Diaz to miss his third game in a row Saturday. The Rockies haven't given any indication that the 33-year-old backstop is trending toward an IL stint, but he may have to spend time on the injured list if his condition doesn't improve within the next couple of days. Hunter Goodman will start behind the plate and bat eighth while Diaz recovers.
May 15 2024Diaz exited Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Padres with left hand soreness and will be held out of the lineup for Wednesday's series finale, MLB.com reports. He struck out in his lone plate appearance on the day. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz exited in the third inning with recurring hand soreness. He's not expected to miss additional time beyond Wednesday's contest, but Jacob Stallings should be behind the dish for Colorado's series finale Wednesday.
May 9 2024Diaz went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz drove in Colorado's third run of the game with an infield single in the bottom of the fifth and later added a two-run shot in the ninth to bring his team back within two runs of the Giants, though his effort would fall short. It marked the catcher's third multi-hit game already this month, and he's now hit safely in five of his last six contests. The home run was only Diaz's third of the season, though he's now batting .348 in May with four RBI and three extra-base hits.
May 2 2024Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll get a well-deserved breather Thursday after starting at catcher or designated hitter in each of the Rockies' last nine games. Jacob Stallings will replace Diaz behind the dish.
Apr 24 2024Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Padres on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz accounted for half of the Rockies' runs in the contest with his solo shot to center field in the eighth inning. The blast snapped a 19-game homerless drought for the backstop, who belted 14 long balls last season. Despite the modest power output thus far, Diaz has had a nice start to the campaign with a .312/.357/.429 slash line and 11 RBI.
Apr 21 2024Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz delivered Colorado's only offense with a two-RBI double in the opening frame. That continued a hot start to the campaign, as he has at least one hit in 11 of his last 13 games while also racking up nine RBI and five runs scored in that span.
Apr 13 2024Diaz went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored Friday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz delivered singles in each of his first two at-bats, coming around to score after the first while driving in a run with the latter. The performance extended his hitting streak to six games, the first five of which came at Coors Field. Diaz has started 10 of the first 14 contests of the season and should remain the Rockies' primary catcher.

Mar 29 2024Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Friday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz made his lone hit of the game count when he took Merrill Kelly deep in the second inning to tally his first homer of the season. He has hit sixth in each of Colorado's first two games and has two hits across seven plate appearances. The Rockies are reportedly looking to rest Diaz more often in 2024 with Jacob Stallings on the roster as a reliable defender, a situation that will be worth monitoring moving forward.
Mar 4 2024The Rockies hope to rest Diaz more in 2024 after acquiring Jacob Stallings in the offseason, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz earned a career-high 526 plate appearances and suited up in 141 games in 2023, primarily because the Rockies lacked a reliable second catcher. The addition of Stallings gives the team a solid defensive backstop, and Diaz is likely to see less volume as a result. Given his mediocre .725 OPS and .142 ISO from a year ago, his fantasy value is likely to take at least a moderate hit.
Oct 1 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old started the first two games versus Minnesota but will sit for the series and season finale Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went deep during Colorado's five-run first inning and later nabbed his first stolen base of the season. He entered Friday's contest in a 4-for-38 (.105) skid since his last multi-hit game Aug. 4. Since the All-Star break, Diaz has gone 22-for-97 (.226), but he's still slashing .264/.317/.416 through 108 games.

In that span, he's collected 11 hits in 25 at-bats while also tacking on four RBI and two runs scored. Since C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk were dealt away, Diaz has hit cleanup twice, though he hit in his more customary sixth position Friday.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will head to the bench for the matinee game after he drew starts behind the plate Monday and Tuesday. Jul 26 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. Jun 16 2023Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz opened the scoring with a solo shot off AJ Smith-Shawver in the second inning. It's the catcher's seventh homer of the year and first since May 25. The 32-year-old has cooled off after a red-hot start to the season, batting just .170 (9-for-53) with a .549 OPS in his last 14 games. Through 235 plate appearances on the season however, Diaz is still slashing an impressive .294/.349/.467 with 34 RBI and 23 runs scored.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered the game having gone hitless in each of his last three games -- a span of 11 at-bats. He snapped that brief slump with a leadoff single in the seventh inning before also delivering a two-RBI double one frame later. Diaz has done the majority of his damage at home this season, and he has only four hits with two RBI across 20 at-bats and the first five games of the Rockies' current road trip.

He has clubbed five big flies in 2023, putting him on pace to reach double digits for the third time in his career. The catcher has been one of the most surprising fantasy players of the season, as he is sporting a career-high .913 OPS despite never topping .800 in a season. May 15 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds. May 7 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Prior to leaving camp to play for Colombia in the World Baseball Classic, Diaz had done his part to secure playing time by putting up a 1.289 OPS early in spring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz and Brian Serven have now alternated starts behind the plate over the past six games, with the latter getting the nod at catcher in Sunday's series finale. With a 2-for-23 mark at the plate over his last seven games, Diaz hasn't made a good case for running away with the No. 1 catcher job.

Jun 23 2022Diaz went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer Wednesday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took Louis Head yard in the ninth inning to tally his fourth homer of the season. After failing to go deep for a 25-start stretch between May 1 and June 15, Diaz has hit a home run in back-to-back games. The homer was his third of the season and his first since April 29. Diaz struggled in May, but has picked things up in June with seven hits in 10 games this month. The catcher has at least one hit in each of his last three games and in five of his last six, raising his batting average to .215.
Jun 16 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the bench for the fifth in eight games, Diaz appears to have been surpassed on the depth chart at catcher by Brian Serven. Though the three-year, $14.5 million extension he signed in November was expected to give him plenty of job security as the Rockies' No. 1 backstop, Diaz has largely squandered that goodwill by producing a puny .546 OPS through 159 plate appearances this season, which is a 228-point drop in his OPS from 2021.
Jun 14 2022Diaz is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's been a brutal season so far for Diaz, who has hit ninth in all but one of his 15 starts since May 15. He is hitting .204 on the season and .173 since the middle of May. Brian Serven will start behind the dish and hit eighth.
Jun 12 2022Diaz will sit Sunday against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Jun 1 2022Diaz is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Miami. Brian Serven will take over behind the plate in the nightcap.
May 30 2022Diaz will be on the bench for Monday's contest against the Marlins, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz reached base on an error in the second inning and came around to score his seventh run of the season. Otherwise, the effort continued a productive four-game stretch for Diaz, as he's collected five hits -- including a home run and two doubles -- with four runs scored and an RBI across 12 plate appearances. He's now hitting .267/.323/.450 across 18 games to begin the campaign.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had a towering flyball knocked down by the wind in the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday, but he hit a line drive in the bottom of the seventh that resulted in a two-run homer. The 31-year-old already has two extra-base hits in his first three appearances of the season and has value as a catcher at Coors Field after he hit a career-high 18 home runs last year.
Apr 9 2022Diaz will sit Saturday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Friday's season opener. He'll get a rest day already in the second game of the year, with the Rockies seemingly wanting to ease him into the season following an abbreviated spring schedule. Dom Nunez takes over behind the plate.
Mar 16 2022Diaz, whose arrival to big-league spring training has been delayed by visa issues, is scheduled to join the Rockies on Thursday, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since he missed only a handful of workouts, Diaz isn't at any risk of not being ready to go from a preparation standpoint for Opening Day. After inking a three-year, $14.5 million contract extension in November, Diaz appears locked in as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher. The 31-year-old was a below-league-average performer at the plate in 2021 (92 wRC+), but thanks in no small part to the favorable hitting confines of Coors Field, he was a serviceable fantasy catcher with a .246 average, 18 home runs, 52 runs and 44 RBI over 371 plate appearances.

Oct 3 2021Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Diaz took over as Colorado's primary catcher in late June, he'll close the campaign with back-to-back days off as Dom Nunez picks up another turn behind the dish. Unless he replaces Nunez later in the contest or is used as a pinch hitter, Diaz will finish the 2021 season with a .246 average, 18 home runs, 52 runs and 44 RBI over 106 games.
Oct 2 2021Diaz isn't starting Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 1-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a strikeout Friday, but he'll retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Dom Nunez will start at catcher and bat eighth.

Sep 17 2021Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-8 win over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The catcher has homered three times in his last seven games, giving him 18 long balls on the year. Diaz's .236/304/.469 slash line isn't anything particularly special, but he's enjoying a career year in power, likely thanks to playing roughly half of his games at Coors Field. He's added 40 RBI, 50 runs scored and 15 doubles across 96 contests.

Sep 8 2021Diaz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two doubles and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 7-4 loss to San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The catcher entered Wednesday's contest just 1-for-11 across six games in September prior to the three-hit outburst. Diaz has thrived with Colorado this year, swatting 16 homers with 35 RBI and 45 runs scored despite slashing just .232/.303/.461 across 314 plate appearances. Diaz's recent slump allowed Dom Nunez to earn a more even timeshare behind the dish, but the latter hasn't been as consistent a hitter this year.
Sep 7 2021Diaz isn't starting Tuesday's game against the Giants, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games after he went 0-for-3 with a walk Monday. Dom Nunez will start behind the dish and bat eighth.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old backstop is on a roll, hitting safely in six straight games and going yard in four straight. The surge has boosted his slash line on the season to a still-rough .203/.279/.377, but he's at least been a viable streaming option in Coors Field, posting a .786 OPS at home with five of his six homers on the year.
Jul 1 2021Diaz went 3-for-4 with a double, three-run homer and strikeout in a 5-2 victory against St. Louis on Thursday. Jun 20 2021Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will give way to Dom Nunez in the series finale, but the former seems to be benefiting from the larger share of playing time at catcher lately. Before sitting Sunday, Diaz started behind the plate in four of the Rockies' last six games.
Jun 16 2021Diaz went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Wednesday's 8-7 win over San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had his best game of the season Wednesday. Jun 8 2021Diaz is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game in Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After drawing three consecutive starts at catcher between Thursday and Saturday, Diaz will now sit for the second time in as many games in favor of Dom Nunez. Neither backstop has been especially productive at the dish this season, so a rough timeshare between the two will likely remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Jun 6 2021Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Diaz will sit out the series finale, he may have at least temporarily supplanted Dom Nunez as the Rockies' No. 1 catcher. Diaz caught in each of the Rockies' previous three games, making two starts against right-handed pitchers during that time.
May 24 2021Diaz went 1-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run in Monday's 3-2 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He drove a David Peterson pitch over the left-field fence in the second inning. It's the first homer of the season for Diaz, who has effectively fallen into the short side of a platoon with Dom Nunez behind the plate for Colorado thanks to a woeful .410 OPS.
Apr 11 2021Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the bench for the sixth time in 10 games to begin the season, Diaz appears to be behind Dom Nunez on the Rockies' depth chart at catcher. Diaz is off to a 2-for-18 start at the plate while Nunez has gone 4-for-17 with three home runs, so Diaz doesn't appear likely to claim the No. 1 role anytime soon.
Apr 9 2021Diaz is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old will take a seat for the second straight contest with Dom Nunez receiving another start behind the plate for Colorado. Diaz started Opening Day for the Rockies, but he's started only two games since while Nunez receives his fifth start of the season Friday.
Apr 8 2021Diaz isn't starting Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was the Rockies' Opening Day starter behind the plate, but he's now started just two of the last six games. Dom Nunez will serve as the starting catcher Thursday, batting eighth.
Apr 6 2021Diaz is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After starting on Opening Day, Diaz has gotten into the lineup just once in the last four games. Both of his starts to date have come against southpaws, while Dom Nunez has handled the starts against righties like Tuesday's starter for Arizona, Luke Weaver. It's possible the two will continue to platoon going forward, which would leave Diaz on the bench for more than half of the Rockies' games.
Apr 3 2021Diaz will sit Saturday against the Dodgers, Jenny Cavnar of AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz started behind the plate on Opening Day but now finds himself on the bench for the second game in a row. Dom Nunez will get another start in his absence.
Apr 2 2021Diaz is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts Opening Day and will head to the bench for Friday's contest. Dom Nunez will start behind the plate and bat eighth in the second game of the season.
Mar 13 2021Diaz went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in Friday's spring loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rockies' catchers only combined for two home runs last year, but Diaz and Dom Nunez have now homered in back-to-back spring games for Colorado. Diaz has appeared in six games to begin Cactus League play and has gone 7-for-14 with one home run, three doubles, four runs, four RBI, one walk and two strikeouts.
Dec 1 2020Diaz signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Rockies on Monday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deal comes with $300,000 in incentives. Manager Bud Black likes how Diaz has improved defensively behind the plate, so he should enter spring training atop the depth chart. He was not as sharp offensively, hitting .235/.288/.353 with two home runs in 26 games. Tony Wolters and Dom Nunez linger for now as depth options.
Sep 27 2020Diaz went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and an additional run scored in Saturday's win over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz finished the game just one triple away from the cycle and blasted his second long ball of the season when he took Luke Weaver deep in the fourth inning. He enters the final game of the campaign hitting .250 with a below-average .679 OPS.
Sep 25 2020Diaz isn't in the lineup for the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will hit the bench after recording a single and one walk over four plate appearances during Game 1. Tony Wolters will start at catcher for the nightcap.
Sep 22 2020Diaz is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz started the past two games and went 1-for-4 with two RBI in each contest, but he'll receive the day off Tuesday. Tony Wolters takes over behind the plate for Colorado.
Sep 15 2020Diaz went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz gave the Rockies a lead they wouldn't lose with his blast off Athletics starter Sean Manaea in the fifth inning. That homer was Diaz's first of the year, as well as his first two RBI. He also has two runs scored and a .250/.341/.361 slash line across 41 plate appearances.
Aug 20 2020The Rockies reinstated Diaz (not injury related) from the restricted list Thursday, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Colorado had moved Diaz to the restricted list Monday after he broke COVID-19-related protocols, but his reinstatement suggests he's now made amends for the transgression. Diaz is expected to step back in as the primary backup to top catcher Tony Wolters.
Aug 17 2020Diaz was placed on the restricted list Monday for a violation of team protocols. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz traveled with the Rockies to Houston for their road trip, but he'll be sidelined for violating team protocols. His absence isn't related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. It's unclear how much time he'll spend on the restricted list, but Tony Wolters and Drew Butera should handle the duties behind the plate in his absence. Right-hander Ashton Goudeau was recalled by the Rockies in a corresponding move.
Aug 9 2020Diaz will start at catcher and bat sixth Sunday against the Mariners, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored Friday in his Rockies debut, Diaz will re-enter the lineup in the series finale while lefty Justus Sheffield takes the hill for the Mariners. Tony Wolters is still locked in as the Rockies' top catcher against right-handed pitching, but Diaz may have leapfrogged Drew Butera as the team's primary backstop versus southpaws.
Jul 22 2020Diaz will begin the season on the Rockies' 30-man roster, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was late in reporting to camp due to COVID-19 protocol, but he was able to return and impressed enough to secure the backup catcher job behind Tony Wolters. Diaz appeared in a career-high 102 games with the Pirates last season, slashing .241/.296/.307 with two home runs and 28 RBI.
Jul 7 2020Diaz has yet to report to camp due to COVID-19 protocols, Nick Groke of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's been no indication the Diaz has tested positive for the virus, but the process involved in clearing players to join camp can be a lengthy one. Diaz is in a battle for playing time behind the plate, and the lost practice time can't help, but he should still have at least a bit of time to make his case if he's cleared to join his teammates soon.
Mar 23 2020Diaz and Drew Butera were making an argument for the Rockies to break camp with three catchers due to their impressive spring performances, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Diaz and Butera are in camp on minor-league contracts, they outperformed Tony Wolters and Dom Nunez, who are on the 40-man roster. Diaz hit .429 with a double, a triple, two walks and one strikeout in 21 spring at-bats. He also saw the most playing time of the four candidates. Wolters' spot as the primary catcher would seem to be safe, but Nunez, who hit .200 with six strikeouts in 15 spring at-bats, has minor-league options remaining, so he could open the year at Triple-A.
Feb 22 2020Diaz (knee) is in the lineup for Saturday's spring opener against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz ended last season dealing with the knee injury, but he has completed his recovery and is ready to take the field Saturday. He will start behind the plate and hit eighth Saturday.
Jan 6 2020Diaz (knee) signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Monday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz became a free agent after he was non-tendered by Pittsburgh. He appeared in 101 contests for the Pirates in 2019, slashing .241/.296/.307 with two homers and 28 RBI before being shut down at the end of September due to a knee injury. The veteran backstop figures to battle for a spot on the 25-man roster with Tony Wolters and Dom Nunez.
Dec 2 2019Diaz (knee) was non-tendered by the Pirates on Monday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took the field in 101 games a season ago, hitting .241 with two homers and 28 RBI. His injury history could scare some teams off, but he may still receive a big-league offer after being cut loose by Pittsburgh.
Sep 25 2019Diaz (knee) has been shut down for the remainder of the season, Nubyjas Wilborn of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been sidelined since Saturday with a right knee injury and simply won't have enough time to return, leaving Jacob Stallings and Steve Baron to finish out the season as Pittsburgh's primary catchers. Across 101 games with the Pirates this season, Diaz compiled a .241/.296/.307 slash line with two home runs and 28 RBI.
Sep 24 2019Diaz (knee) remains on the bench Tuesday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz left Saturday's game against the Brewers with a knee issue and hasn't appeared since. It's not clear when he's expected to return. Jacob Stallings gets the start behind the plate Tuesday.
Sep 22 2019Diaz (knee) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz left Saturday's game with a right knee injury, and the setback will prevent him from starting Sunday. The extent of Diaz's injury is uncertain, so it remains to be seen if he will be back in the lineup for the Pirates' next game Tuesday against the Cubs.
Sep 21 2019Diaz exited Saturday's contest early with a right knee injury, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz exited the game in the fourth inning due to the injury and Steve Baron took over behind the plate. The extent of the injury remains unknown for the time being, though if Diaz is forced to miss more time, Baron would serve as the backup catcher behind Jacob Stallings.
Sep 19 2019Diaz went 1-for-4 with a walk, double, RBI and two runs scored Thursday against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz enjoyed a productive day at the dish, first doubling in Colin Moran in the second inning. He later came around to score in the same frame before crossing the plate again two innings later. Despite the departure of Francisco Cervelli (finger), Diaz has endured a disappointing season by hitting .243/.298/.309 across 330 plate appearances.
Sep 5 2019Diaz's solo homer ignited a ninth-inning rally in a 6-5 win over the Marlins on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With just two home runs to his credit, the catcher's offensive production has fallen off a cliff since 2018. An undisclosed viral infection delayed his season's start and it's possible that he never fully recovered. Whatever the case, Diaz's disappointing campaign includes a slash line of .254/.306/.325 in 291 plate appearances and his platoon role for 2020 is not guaranteed.
Aug 23 2019Diaz went 0-for-4 with a strikeout against Washington on Thursday.
Aug 22 2019Diaz (head) is starting behind the dish and hitting eighth Thursday against the Nationals.
Aug 21 2019Diaz (head) is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Nationals.
Aug 20 2019Diaz left Monday's game after getting hit by a bat in the mask while catching, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.

Jul 25 2018Diaz is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Indians. The Pirates will hold Diaz out for the day game after the night game after the backstop made his sixth consecutive start in Tuesday's 9-4 win. Jacob Stallings will catch for Jameson Taillon in the series finale.
Jul 22 2018Diaz went 1-for-5 with an RBI double Sunday against the Reds. He's served as Pittsburgh's cleanup hitter nine times in the month of July, going 12-for-34. Speaking on his Sunday radio show, general manager Neal Huntington said the team is considering giving starting catcher Francisco Cervelli (concussion) occasional time at first base to keep Diaz's bat in the lineup. Given Cervelli's precarious status, fantasy owners might want to pick up Diaz for both the near term and future, especially now that Pittsburgh seems to have confidence in the 27-year-old. He's hitting .287 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 174 at-bats, just keep in mind Diaz was a career .259 hitter in parts of nine minor-league seasons.
Jul 15 2018Diaz will start behind the plate and bat fourth Sunday against the Brewers.Diaz has re-emerged as the Pirates' primary backstop after Francisco Cervelli (concussion) was placed on the 7-day disabled list Saturday. Considering it's the second time Cervelli has hit the DL this season due to a head injury, it's fair to assume that he may not be ready to return when first eligible July 21. As the Pirates' willingness to deploy him as the cleanup hitter in the series finale might suggest, Diaz has been stellar at the plate this season, slashing .292/.339/.481 with seven home runs across 168 plate appearances. Fantasy owners may want to consider kicking the tires on the 27-year-old if their current catcher options aren't getting the job done.
Jul 14 2018Diaz is out of the lineup for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Brewers. As expected, Diaz won't be tasked which catching two games on the same day. Jacob Stallings gets the nod in his place.
Jul 8 2018Diaz is out of the lineup Sunday against the Phillies.Diaz will receive a well-deserved breather after starting 14 consecutive games behind the plate for the Pirates while Francisco Cervelli (concussion) was sidelined. With Cervelli activated from the 10-day disabled list Sunday and re-entering the lineup, Diaz may only be in store for a couple starts per week so long as Cervelli avoids any sort of setback on the health front. That still might be enough to make Diaz playable in NL-only or deeper two-catcher formats, as he's been one of the best No. 2 backstops in baseball this season. Diaz has hit .289 with seven home runs, 23 RBI and 26 runs across 155 plate appearances.
Jul 4 2018Diaz will make his 12th straight start Wednesday and bat cleanup against the Dodgers. He's slashing .316/.357/.605 in 42 plate appearances since taking over for Francisco Cervelli (concussion). Diaz is proving that he could become a viable full-time option in the event that Cervelli remains out indefinitely or is traded.
Jul 2 2018Diaz will make his 10th straight start at catcher while batting cleanup Monday against the Dodgers. The 27-year-old is batting .281 with one homer and six RBI since taking over for Francisco Cervelli (concussion) on a full-time basis. For the season, Diaz is slashing .294/.341/.484 with six homers and 21 RBI in 138 plate appearances. General manager Neal Huntington said on his Sunday radio show that while Cervelli is making good progress, the team will continue taking a conservative approach with his recovery. As a result, look for Diaz to start nearly every game until Cervelli returns.
Jul 1 2018Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI Sunday against the Padres.Diaz has gotten consistent playing time since Francisco Cervelli landed on the disabled list (concussion) and has been productive. In his time as the primary backstop, Diaz has gone 9-for-32 with a home run, six RBI and six runs scored. Cervelli has resumed workouts, so Diaz's time as a full-time player may be coming to an end, though that could change if Cervelli is dealt prior to the trade deadline.
Jun 16 2018Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Saturday's win over the Reds.Diaz took Luis Castillo deep in the fourth inning to put the Pirates up 3-1, marking his second homer of the month and fifth of season. While Francisco Cervelli is locked in as the team's primary backstop, Diaz continues to produce in his limited opportunities, posting a .304/.350/.500 line through 34 games.
Jun 7 2018Diaz clubbed a three-run home run Thursday and finished the day 1-for-4 with four RBI against the Dodgers.Diaz's three-run blast off of Brock Stewart brought the Pirates within two runs of the visiting Dodgers and marked his fourth home run of the season. He plays sparingly behind Francisco Cervelli, but Diaz manages to produce when given the opportunity. He was slashing .286/.342/.443 over 70 at-bats coming into Thursday.
Apr 23 2018Diaz went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer Sunday against the Phillies. He's started only five games in 2018 but has nine hits in 19 at-bats in those contests. Diaz doesn't play enough to offer value to many fantasy owners and hit just .223 in 200 plate appearances with Pittsburgh in 2017. The 27-year-old could see more playing time at some point this summer, however, given starting catcher Francisco Cervelli's extensive injury history.
Apr 14 2018Diaz went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer Friday against the Marlins.Making just his third start of the season, Diaz batted eighth and reached bases three times (he also walked). The catcher committed a costly throwing error, which led to Miami scoring three runs on a sacrifice fly, but he's in no jeopardy of losing his backup role. Diaz will likely start one or two games per week while patiently biding his time behind the injury-prone Francisco Cervelli.
Mar 27 2018Diaz will open the season as the Pirates' backup catcher behind Francisco Cervelli, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.Diaz's spring got off to a rocky start from a personal standpoint after his mother was kidnapped in his native Venezuela in early February, but things ended on a happier note three days later when she was rescued. The 27-year-old didn't end up missing any significant time in camp and was able to beat out Jacob Stallings and Ryan Lavarnway for the second catcher spot. So long as Cervelli stays healthy, Diaz will likely be limited to a couple starts per week.
Feb 12 2018Diaz will report to the Pirates' spring training facility in Bradenton, Fla. on Monday after his mother, Ana Soto, was rescued three days after being kidnapped in Venezuela, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports. With his scary family situation now having been resolved in welcome fashion, Diaz can now turn his focus to winning an Opening Day roster spot for the Pirates. The 27-year-old will likely open the season in a backup role behind Francisco Cervelli, but the latter's health woes in recent seasons could put Diaz in store for extended playing time at some point in 2018.
Oct 1 2017Diaz is not starting against the Nationals on Sunday. The rookie is slumping his way into the offseason, getting four hits in his last 32 at-bats. Diaz's receiving skills continue to need work, but he remains the likely backup to starter Francisco Cervelli in 2018. Given Cervelli's penchant for landing on the DL, Diaz could see significant playing time next year.
Sep 19 2017Diaz went 1-for-3 with a double against the Brewers on Monday. The 26-year-old has played complete games for Pittsburgh in 13 of the team's last 16 contests as he gains experience for 2018. Diaz, who is slashing .234/.250/.340 during his September run (48 plate appearances), figures to see fairly regular playing time next year while serving as the fragile Francisco Cervelli's backup. He's hit .275 against lefties in an albeit small sample (41 plate appearances) and could become a streaming option versus southpaws.
Sep 6 2017Diaz is not in the lineup against the Cubs on Wednesday.Diaz will head to the bench following four straight starts, including a 1-for-3 day during Tuesday's victory. In his place, Chris Stewart draws the assignment behind the plate.
Sep 4 2017Diaz will start at catcher and bat eighth Monday against the Cubs. With Diaz picking up his third consecutive start Monday, it looks as though he'll be the Pirates' top option behind the plate until Francisco Cervelli (quadriceps) returns from the disabled list, perhaps later in the week. The non-contending Pirates probably aren't eager to use Cervelli on a full-time basis in September given the multitude of injuries he's dealt with this season, so Diaz could be in store for semi-regular work even after Cervelli returns.
Aug 26 2017Diaz was recalled by the Pirates on Saturday. He returns to the Pirates with Francisco Cervelli heading back to the disabled list due to an irritated quadriceps. Diaz figures to platoon with Chris Stewart behind the dish while Cervelli is on the shelf. The 26-year-old Diaz is slashing .250/.283/.350 with 16 RBI in 100 at-bats this season.
Aug 15 2017Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Francisco Cervelli is day-to-day with a hand injury, so the Pirates summoned Diaz to provide some immediate catching depth. Diaz is hitting .266/.298/.339 with two home runs and three steals in 57 games at Triple-A, and has a career .247 average with one home run and one steal in 33 big-league games. He is the definition of organizational depth.
Jul 7 2017Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Diaz has seen limited playing time since Francisco Cervelli returned from the 7-day concussion DL, and appears to have lost out on a backup role to counterpart Chris Stewart. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old has filled in admirably since getting called up in May, hitting .266 with 14 RBI over 79 at-bats, and should get a chance to see increased action at Indianapolis. Reliever A.J. Schugel was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jun 23 2017Diaz is expected to split time with Chris Stewart while starter Francisco Cervelli (concussion) remains sidelined. "I don't think it's important to designate a starter," manager Clint Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Both guys are going to catch and be used appropriately."It wouldn't be surprising to see Diaz get the bulk of starts over Stewart, though it sounds as if Hurdle has a plan mapped out. Diaz went hitless in four at-bats Thursday, lowering his batting average to .276.
Jun 22 2017Diaz will start behind the plate and bat fifth Thursday in Milwaukee. With Francisco Cervelli back on the DL with concussion-like symptoms, Diaz figures to see an increase in playing time. The catcher is hitting .302 in 53 at-bats. Although that number figures to drop in a larger sample size, Diaz has shown that he can hit around .280 or so in the upper minor-league levels.
Jun 11 2017Diaz reached base four times Saturday, going 3-for-3 with a walk. He's hitting .367 in 30 at-bats with a homer and eight RBI. The Pirates have been forced to use him regularly with both Francisco Cervelli (concussion) and Kris Stewart (hamstring) on the disabled list and so far the results have been encouraging. The 26-year-old has improved at the plate in recent minor-league seasons and seems capable of batting somewhere in the .270 range as a major leaguer. With both Cervelli and Stewart prone to injury, Diaz could find himself with ample playing time throughout the summer and beyond.
Jun 11 2017Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run during Sunday's win over Miami. The 26-year-old backstop has already piled up 10 RBI through just 39 plate appearances and boasts a rock-solid .382/.462/.588 slash line since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. However, Diaz owns a .670 OPS over 158 games at the Triple-A level, so his current results at the highest level are probably unsustainable. He'll continue to see plenty of at-bats for the duration of Francisco Cervelli (concussion) and Chris Stewart (hamstring) absences, though.
Jun 9 2017Diaz is not in the lineup Friday against the Marlins.Diaz is expected to pick up most of the starts while both Francisco Cervelli (concussion) and Chris Stewart (hamstring) are sidelined, but the young backstop will get a night off after two consecutive starts. Jacob Stallings will assume catching duties for the evening.
Jun 7 2017Diaz is batting eighth and catching Wednesday against the Orioles. With Francisco Cervelli (concussion) landing on the disabled list, Diaz seems to be in line for most of the innings behind the plate for the foreseeable future. Although the Pirates called up Jacob Stallings from the minors to provide depth, Diaz's 6-for-20 performance thus far this season along with his status as the team's catcher of the future should afford him ample opportunities to show the club how well he can perform in a full-time role.
Jun 3 2017Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double, homer and six RBI against the Mets on Friday.A last-minute replacement for starter Francisco Cervelli (illness), Diaz smacked both a three-run double and three-run dinger. He's better known for defense, but his offense had improved over his last several seasons of minor-league play. Although he's stuck behind Cervelli and Chris Stewart in the depth chart, his stock is on the rise and he figures to see a tick up in playing time, especially with Stewart on the disabled list. Diaz remains the team's long-range catcher of the future.
May 30 2017Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.Diaz was recalled to serve as the Pirates' backup catcher after Chris Stewart (hamstring) was forced to go on the disabled list. This will be Diaz's second stint with the big club this season; he appeared in four games earlier in the year and went 2-for-9 with two walks. He'll likely head back to Triple-A once Stewart is ready to return from the disabled list.
May 8 2017Diaz was sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Stephen J. Nesbitt reports.Diaz served as the backup catcher while Francisco Cervelli (foot) battled discomfort. Now that Cervelli is back, Diaz's presence is no longer required. He was 2-for-9 with a run scored during his stint in the majors.
May 2 2017Diaz will start and bat sixth Tuesday against the Reds.Prior to his recall, Diaz hit .305/.317/.441 in 61 plate appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis. Given the health concerns surrounding Pittsburgh's top two catchers (Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart), the 26-year-old could be in line for plenty of opportunity in 2017. He won't hit for power or steal bases, but Diaz has shown the ability to hit for average in the upper minor leagues over the past few seasons.
May 1 2017Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. With the Pirates temporarily in need of another catcher while Francisco Cervelli nurses a foot injury, Diaz got the call, with John Bormann being optioned in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old is slashing .305/.317/.441 through 59 at-bats with Indianapolis this season. Cervelli remains confident that he won't need a DL stint, so if that's the case, Diaz's stay in the majors could be a brief one.
Apr 1 2017Diaz went 1-for-2 in Montreal on Saturday as a minor-league callup. He hit .286 in 35 spring at-bats. Given the likelihood of injury to Pittsburgh's top two catchers, Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart, there's a good chance Diaz could see considerable playing time in 2017. The 26-year-old features an unexciting slash line of .258/.323/.362 in eight minor-league seasons but batted .312 and .271 in 2014 and 2015, respectively, before getting hurt last year.
Feb 20 2017Diaz has recovered from the cellulitis which ended his 2016 campaign early and is taking part in spring training activities. The 26-year-old missed a golden opportunity to see his first significant action at the big league level in 2016 due to a host of ailments. He enters 2017 with a chance to eventually get that playing time he missed last year, essentially because of the fragile nature of the two catchers ahead of him, Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart. Diaz's prospect status dimmed a bit last year but it seems as though he's finally set to show what he can do in the majors.
Sep 19 2016The Pirates expect Diaz (leg) to be ready for the start of spring training, GM Neal Huntington said during his Sunday radio show. After working through an elbow injury, Diaz came down with an unrelated cause of cellulitis on his leg. Although the catcher missed an opportunity for playing time in 2016, Huntington remains encouraged about his future, saying Diaz's arm strength is the best in the system and his offense is coming along. Given Francisco Cervelli's checkered history of spotty health, Diaz could easily work his way into the mix behind the plate.
Sep 13 2016Diaz (leg) was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and placed on the 60-day DL on Tuesday. This amounts to nothing more than a paper move to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Diaz had already been ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to clean up a bacterial infection in his leg. The 25-year-old also missed significant time with elbow troubles and hit just .266/.289/.298 in 25 games with Indianapolis.
Sep 7 2016Diaz has been shut down for the rest of the season due to a bacterial infection in his leg that required surgery, the Pittsburgh Tribune's Travis Sawchik reports. At best, Diaz could have served as the third or fourth catcher for the Pirates in September. Instead, he will take time to recover from surgery to take care of a bacterial infection. It sounds like he will be ready to go when pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
Aug 5 2016Diaz has been activated by Triple-A Indianapolis.Diaz was a reserve for the Pirates in case Francisco Cervelli was forced to miss more time, but Cervelli returned to the Pirates lineup on Friday. Therefore, Diaz will go back to Triple-A Indianapolis where he will start tonight against Toledo. The 25-year-old is hitting .267 in 60 minor league at-bats with High-A, Double-A and Triple-A.
Jul 29 2016The Pirates would likely recall Diaz if Francisco Cervelli (foot) is forced to miss time.Diaz made his first start in the majors Sunday before Pittsburgh returned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. The catcher recently returned from elbow surgery and has played in only 15 games in 2016. He has offensive potential -- he batted .328 in 326 Double-A at-bats in 2014 -- but it remains to be seen how much he would play.
Jul 26 2016Diaz, who went 0-for-4 with an RBI ground out in his major league debut behind the plate Sunday, impressed manager Clint Hurdle with his defense. "I thought Diaz caught a fantastic game," Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.A game after Philadelphia stole five bases with Francisco Cervelli catching, Diaz picked off a runner at second base and nailed the only would-be base stealer. It remains to be seen whether Pittsburgh will keep Diaz after backup Eric Fryer returns from paternity leave, but he's already left a positive impression with his manager.
Jul 23 2016Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Stephen Nesbitt reports.Eric Fryer was placed on the paternity list, so Diaz was summoned to provide short-term catching depth behind Francisco Cervelli. Diaz was reinstated from the 60-day DL a couple days ago and optioned to Triple-A after missing the first three-plus months of the season with an elbow injury. He figures to be sent back to Triple-A once Fryer rejoins the Pirates.
Jul 20 2016Diaz has been reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.During his last 10 games in his rehab assignment, Diaz is hitting .324 with only four strikeouts in 34 at-bats. He hasn't provided much production across the board in his seven years throughout the minors, but the Pirates may call on him at some point in the second half to spell Francisco Cervelli behind the plate.
Jul 17 2016Diaz will move up from Double-A to Triple-A to continue his rehab assignment, Pirates Prospects reports.GM Neal Huntington said Sunday that Diaz would head to Triple-A as soon as fellow rehabbing catcher, Francisco Cervellli, was ready to return in Pittsburgh. Unless Cervelli suffers an injury Sunday then he''l likely be back Tuesday with the Pirates following Monday's day off. Huntington said he's gotten good reports on Diaz, who's gone 11-for-30 in Altoona.
Jul 15 2016Diaz went 3-for-4 with a homer for High-A Bradenton on Thursday as part of his rehab stint. He's batting .391/.464/.522 in his first 28 plate appearances as he comes back from elbow surgery. Diaz could factor into the second half of Pittsburgh's catching situation if he can prove his elbow is healthy.
Jul 4 2016Diaz (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Monday for High-A Brandenton, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. If Diaz were healthy, there's a good chance he'd be with the Major League club at the moment, as both Francisco Cervelli (hand) and Chris Stewart (knee) are on the disabled list. Instead, the team had to claim Eric Fryer off waivers to ensure positional depth. That being said, the Pirates will likely keep a close eye on the 25-year-old's rehab assignment, as he could be an option for the team following the All-Star break. He has yet to play this season, however, so a somewhat lengthy rehab assignment could be on tap.
Jun 22 2016Diaz (elbow) has resumed more of his normal baseball activities including hitting and catching, and will begin to throw to bases in the near future, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Diaz started throwing at 120 feet last week and seems to be progressing well from a right elbow injury that has caused him to miss all of the 2016 season thus far. He decided to undergo surgery in early May and is still on pace to return just after the All-Star break around mid-July.
Jun 15 2016Diaz (elbow) has began throwing and plans to resume hitting and catching activities in a simulated game soon, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Diaz has yet to play in a game this season due to his elbow injury that required surgery in early May. He is expected to return around mid-July and the fact that he will resume some baseball activities is promising. Diaz is not going to participate in any throwing during the simulated game, but has been throwing from 120 feet, which is another encouraging sign. The 25-year-old has only accumulated two at-bats in the majors during his career, but still remains a significant part of the Pirates future.
May 25 2016Diaz (elbow) is nearing the point to where he can resume throwing, Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. After trying to go with the rest and rehab route with his sore elbow this spring, Diaz ultimately opted to undergo elbow debridement surgery in early May. The initial timetable for a return was set at 7-to-9 weeks, so he's still a ways away from the Pirates considering activating him, but Wednesday's news is encouraging nonetheless. According to Nesbitt, Diaz is "in the final stages of prep" before he can begin a throwing program. A July return still appears to be the likely scenario for Diaz, but his recovery is headed in the right direction.
May 19 2016Diaz was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Diaz will be on the shelf until mid-July after undergoing elbow surgery earlier in May, so he was an obvious candidate to be transferred to the 60-day DL when a spot on the 40-man roster was needed. That time came Thursday when right-hander Wilfredo Boscan was promoted to the big leagues, so Diaz was shuttled off the 40-man roster for the time being. He'll likely be added back on once he's done with his rehab process.
May 4 2016Diaz (elbow) underwent elbow debridement surgery this week and he is expected to miss seven-to-nine weeks, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. The young catching prospect has been battling elbow issues since late in spring training, and while it looked for a while like he might have been able to avoid surgery with just rest and rehab, the Pirates opted to go the surgical route this week. Fortunately, the procedure he underwent was a debridement rather than Tommy John, so the club is optimistic that Diaz will be able to return in early July.
May 2 2016Diaz (elbow) will undergo surgery on his right elbow this week, although the Pirates are confident that there is no UCL damage, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Fortunately for Diaz, it seems that he'll be able to avoid Tommy John surgery, but elbow surgery still will keep him on the shelf for some time. This really hurts the Pirates catching depth for this season, as they are fairly thin beyond Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart. A timetable for Diaz's return is currently unknown, but more details should surface after the surgery is complete.
Mar 20 2015Diaz was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.Diaz hit .438 in 17 spring at-bats and looked strong defensively. The catcher batted .312/.366/.421 split between Double-A and Triple-A in 2014, breaking a string of four weak-hitting campaigns to start his pro career. If Diaz continues swinging a hot bat at Triple-A, then he'll surely make his big-league debut in 2015 -- though the question remains when.
Mar 9 2015Diaz went 1-for-2 with a double Monday against the Twins. The catcher is slated to start the season with Triple-A Indy, but has only the injury-prone Francisco Cervelli, Chris Stewart and possibly Tony Sanchez ahead of him on the depth chart. Diaz is already major-league ready defensively -- he threw out a runner Monday, but still needs work at the plate. It wouldn't be surprising to see Diaz make his debut sometime over the summer.
Nov 20 2014Diaz was added to the Pirates' 40-man roster Thursday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.Diaz flew under the radar somewhat over the course of his first five minor league seasons, but broke out by slashing .328/.378/.445 in 91 games with Double-A Altoona in 2014, earning a promotion to Triple-A Indianapolis late in the year. The 24-year-old also had a respectable Arizona Fall League season (.763 OPS), and could factor into the big club's plans in the relatively near future.
