May 1 2025Edwards elected free agency Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards cleared waivers Monday after being removed from the Angels' 40-man roster, and he'll now look to latch on with another organization that might provide a clearer path to major-league playing time. The 33-year-old allowed three earned runs in three innings while with the Angels but owns a 3.59 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 283 innings in his MLB career.
Mar 23 2025Edwards and the Angels agreed on a minor-league contract Sunday, Aram Leighton of JustBaseball.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards and the Angels' deal comes just 13 days after the right-hander committed to playing for the Tigres de Quintana Roo of the Mexican League on March 10. It's unclear why Edwards never reported to the Mexican League, but he will now stick around the United States, likely reporting to Triple-A Salt Lake to open the 2025 campaign. The 33-year-old spent the majority of the 2024 season with Triple-A Iowa, producing a 1.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 24.1 innings in 20 appearances out of the bullpen.
Aug 21 2024The Padres re-signed Edwards to a minor-league contact Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards elected free agency after being outrighted off the Padres' 40-man roster earlier this month, but he's ultimately returned on a new deal. The righty failed to retire a batter in his lone appearance for San Diego and holds a 1.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 24.1 innings with Triple-A El Paso this season.
Aug 12 2024The Padres designated Edwards for assignment Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move makes room on the 40-man roster for the reinstatement of right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) from the 60-day injured list. Edwards was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, and in his lone outing against the Pirates that same day, he allowed two walks and one hit without recording an out. He has a 1.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 24.1 innings in El Paso this season, and should he clear waivers, the 32-year-old will look to join an organization in need of right-handed depth out of the bullpen.
Aug 8 2024The Padres selected Edwards' contract from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards has worked exclusively as a reliever over parts of nine seasons in the big leagues, but he's been operating as a starter since catching on with the Padres in July on a minor-league deal. Over his four starts with El Paso, Edwards compiled a 4.76 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 18:12 K:BB in 17 innings. Though he could get the chance to make his first MLB start later on in the campaign if injuries test the Padres' rotation depth, Edwards is expected to serve as a long-relief option during his first stint in the majors of 2024.
Jul 5 2024The Padres signed Edwards to a minor-league contract Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards had been with Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs organization before being released last month. Given that he posted a 1.85 ERA over 24.1 innings (albeit with 15 walks), it could have been an opt-out situation. Edwards has already made one appearance with the Padres' Arizona Complex League affiliate, striking out four over 2.1 perfect frames. He should soon be assigned to Triple-A El Paso, where he will provide veteran relief depth.
Mar 23 2024The Cubs released Edwards on Saturday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Craig Counsell confirmed Saturday that Edwards opted out of his minor-league contract. He gave up one earned run on two hits and three walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings in spring training. Edwards could latch on with a team looking for veteran bullpen depth.
Mar 10 2024Edwards, who tossed a scoreless inning of relief with a strikeout in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Rockies, has a 0.00 ERA across four spring appearances. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards last pitched for the Cubs in 2019, and he was a valuable member of the bullpen for the 2016 World Series winning squad. The righty has bounced around a bit in recent years, but he has a chance to settle into a middle-relief spot with Chicago in 2024. Edwards likely won't have a ton of fantasy value in that role, however.
Jan 27 2024Edward signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Saturday that includes an invitation to spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a return to where Edwards first reached the big leagues and had his most successful seasons. Edwards posted a 3.69 ERA and 24:17 K:BB over 31.2 frames with the Nationals in 2023. He missed the last three months of the season with a shoulder issue but presumably will be healthy heading into camp.
Mar 30 2020Edwards is likely to secure an Opening Day roster spot in the Mariners' bullpen despite posting a 9.00 ERA across six Cactus League appearances before spring training was suspended, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hard-throwing right-hander entered camp looking to redeem himself after a disastrous 2019 in which he generated an 8.47 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 22 appearances with the Cubs and Padres. Prior to that season-long hiccup, Edwards was one of baseball's most effective seventh- and eighth-inning options, posting sub-3.00 ERAs and a combined 48 holds during the 2017 and 2018 campaigns in Chicago. This spring, Edwards eliminated some tweaks he'd made to his delivery prior to last season that clearly proved ineffective; although those corrections haven't paid immediate dividends, the upside he offers based on his past body of work certainly boosts his job prospects.
Feb 27 2020Edwards has worked on his mechanics this offseason in an effort to rediscover his electric fastball, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards recalls messing with his mechanics early last season by adding a pause in his pitching motion to try to improve his command. This adjustment proved to be unsuccessful as the 28-year-old finished 2019 with a 8.47 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 19:13 K:BB across only 17 major-league innings with the Cubs and Padres. After signing with Mariners in late November the right-hander told reporters, "I just have to go back to simplifying things and making everything better". Seattle's manager Scott Servais expects to pitch his newly-acquired reliever in some higher-leverage spots and has already complimented the combination of velocity and movement on his pitches. Edwards will look to improve a Mariners' bullpen that finished 22nd in the league with a 4.76 ERA last season.
Nov 27 2019Edwards signed with the Mariners on Wednesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards will receive $950,000 and could earn an additional $500,000 in incentives. The 28-year-old broke into the league with a 3.06 ERA over his first four seasons with the Cubs but struggled to an awful 8.47 ERA in 17 innings in 2019. The good version of Edwards could become the closer for a Mariners team which lacks an obvious ninth-inning option, but the bad version will struggle to stay in the league.
Nov 4 2019Edwards (shoulder) cleared waivers and became a free agent Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Edwards will be in search of a new club over the offseason after posting an ugly 8.47 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 17 innings this season across stops in Chicago and San Diego. He was sidelined Aug. 13 due to a right shoulder strain but should be ready to go for spring training.
Aug 13 2019Edwards was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right shoulder strain.
Aug 12 2019Edwards pitched one inning against Colorado on Sunday, surrendering two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one.
Aug 11 2019Edwards was recalled by the Padres on Sunday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Jul 31 2019Edwards was traded from the Cubs to the Padres on Wednesday in exchange for Brad Wieck, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Jul 17 2018Edwards was activated off the paternity list Monday. The All-Star break means that Edwards ended up missing just a pair of games. He'll return to a high-leverage role in the Cubs' bullpen following the break. Rob Zastryzny was optioned in a corresponding move.
Jul 14 2018Edwards was placed on the paternity list Saturday.Edwards will be able to return after the All-Star break. Rob Zastryzny was called up to take his place in the bullpen.
Jul 7 2018Edwards (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list before Friday's game, struck out the only hitter he faced in a loss to the Reds.Edwards got the call in the seventh inning against Adam Duvall and he made quick work of the outfielder on four pitches. He threw four fastballs clocked around 95 mph, which is right about where he's sat the last three seasons, so it appears he's fully recovered from the shoulder inflammation that had kept him out since late May. Expect the Cubs to increase his workload gradually moving forward.
Jul 6 2018Edwards (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list Friday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. As expected, Edwards will be available out of the Cubs' bullpen for Friday's series opener versus Cincinnati. He appeared in a pair of minor-league rehab games earlier this week, and didn't experience any physical problems during either outing. Across 25 innings, he's posted a 2.88 ERA and 40:12 K:BB this year.
Jul 4 2018Edwards (shoulder) is expected to return from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Friday's series opener against the Reds, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. The Cubs had hoped to bring Edwards back from the DL earlier in the week, but those plans were scrapped after he retired only two of the five batters he faced and issued two walks in his second rehab outing with Triple-A Iowa on Monday. Edwards is scheduled to make another appearance Wednesday for Iowa and should be cleared to rejoin the Cubs afterward if he fares respectably in the outing. Once Edwards is reinstated from the DL, expect him to slot back in as one of the top setup men for closer Brandon Morrow.
Jul 3 2018Edwards (shoulder) may need one more rehab appearance after his outing Monday went poorly, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.Edwards got just two outs and allowed a pair of runs on a pair of walks and a hit batsman Monday for Triple-A Iowa. He's now missed over a month with shoulder inflammation. If he ends up making just one more rehab appearance, he could be lined up to return over the weekend against the Reds.
Jun 28 2018Edwards (shoulder) is headed to Triple-A Iowa for a rehab assignment Thursday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Iowa has a travel day Thursday, so Edwards is likely to make his first rehab appearance over the weekend. The 26-year-old has been on the disabled list since late May and will likely require a handful of rehab appearances, but could return at some point during the first week of July.
Jun 26 2018Edwards (shoulder) is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Tuesday and could soon advance to a rehab stint, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Edwards tossed a bullpen session Sunday without issue and the team is having him get in at least one more before determining next steps. The flamethrowing righty has been out since late May, so he'll probably need a few minor league rehab outings before returning to the MLB roster. When Edwards does rejoin the Cubs, he should resume his high-leverage role in the late innings.
Jun 25 2018Edwards (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Sunday without issue and will likely throw at least one more, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Edwards just resumed mound work after being limited to throwing only off flat ground, so the Cubs will take their time with him and make sure all is well before sending him out on a rehab assignment. If he avoids any setbacks during his next bullpen session, though, he could be given the green light to see game action with one of the Cubs' affiliates.
Jun 22 2018Edwards (shoulder) has advanced to throwing off flat ground, Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com reports.Edwards has moved past throwing the ball around and is beginning to work through a throwing program. The reliever has been sidelined since the end of May with right shoulder inflammation. He will likely require a multi-game appearance in the minor leagues before returning to Chicago, which seems to be a couple weeks away.
Jun 11 2018Edwards (shoulder) will play catch Tuesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. The inflammation in Edwards' shoulder has apparently subsided, clearing the way for him to pick up a throwing program. The 26-year-old remains without a timetable for his return, but one should emerge as he ramps up his throwing.
May 30 2018Edwards was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. He felt discomfort after pitching in Tuesday's game and had an MRI, which showed inflammation. Edwards had a 5.56 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 11.1 innings in May. Cory Mazzoni was brought up from Triple-A as a corresponding move.
May 16 2018Edwards (2-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Braves, allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks while recording just a single out.Edwards had his worst outing of the season and saw his ERA jump from 2.41 to 3.79 in the process. He got the first batter he saw in the eighth inning, but things unraveled quickly, as Edwards proceeded to allow three straight hits followed by two walks (one intentional) before getting the hook. The 26-year-old had a 0.53 ERA as recently as Friday, but he's allowed seven earned runs in two innings of work since then.
May 15 2018Edwards (2-0) picked up the win Tuesday against the Braves despite allowing a run in his inning of work.Edwards has been shaky his last two outings, as he's now allowed four earned runs in 1.2 innings. He's also allowed home runs in consecutive games, which are his first two bombs allowed this season. Despite the recent struggles, Edwards still has a strong 2.41 ERA to go along with 32 strikeouts in 18.2 innings this year.
May 8 2018Edwards (1-0) grabbed the win Tuesday against the Marlins, tossing a scoreless inning of relief with one walk and three strikeouts.Edwards continued his outstanding start to the season, as he now has 30 strikeouts over 17 innings with an elite 0.53 ERA. The righty is on the fantasy radar due to his strong ratios alone, so any wins he picks up along the way are an added bonus. Edwards has additional value in leagues that count holds, as he has eight of those as well.
Apr 26 2018Edwards recorded his fifth hold of the season in Thursday's win over the Brewers by tossing a scoreless inning with a strikeout.Edwards has been dominant this season as a key middle reliever for the Cubs. After Thursday's outing, his ERA is down to a miniscule 0.77, and he has 21 strikeouts in just 11.2 innings. Brandon Morrow is locked in as Chicago's closer, but Edwards holds fantasy value due to his strong ratios and strikeouts, and the holds are an added bonus in leagues that count the stat.
Apr 8 2018Edwards tossed a perfect inning while striking out one and picking up the hold Sunday against Milwaukee.Edwards earned his second hold of the season, setting up Brandon Morrow for the save. The 26-year-old right-hander has been impressive to start the season, giving up just one run in 4.0 innings while recording eight strikeouts. He'll likely remain in a setup role unless Morrow starts to slip up.
Feb 22 2018Edwards is expected to begin the 2018 season in a setup role following the offseason addition of Brandon Morrow, who was confirmed as the team's closer by Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein when spring training began. If Morrow struggles, or misses time with an injury, Edwards is on the short list of potential replacements, although the Cubs have another addition in Steve Cishek with past experience in the ninth-inning role. Nevertheless, Edwards is in the mix in many league formats even as a non-closer reliever, as he's an effective late-inning arm on a good team, capable of making a run at 100 strikeouts if the Cubs nudge his workload closer to 70 innings in 2018.
Sep 23 2017Edwards (5-4) grabbed the win in Friday's game against the Brewers. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one walk and striking out two.Edwards recorded two outs in the ninth inning, then closed out the Brewers in the bottom of the 10th. Closer Wade Davis threw 29 pitches on Thursday, otherwise he likely would have gotten the 10th. Edwards' ability to go more than an inning and strike batters out (12.9 K/9) makes him a valuable member of Chicago's bullpen, although his fantasy value is only moderate in leagues that don't count holds.
Sep 20 2017Edwards pitched a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rays to record his 23rd hold of the season. The 23 holds are good for third in the National League, as Edwards has been a key late-inning reliever for the Cubs. His 12.9 K/9 speaks to how nasty he's been. Edwards is a strong fantasy asset in leagues that count holds, but his strikeout potential gives him some value in other leagues as well.
Sep 6 2017Edwards (3-4) was tagged with his fourth blown save of the season and a loss Tuesday against the Pirates. In 1.1 innings of work, he allowed three hits, two walks and two earned runs.Edwards was able to record the final out of the seventh inning after coming on in relief of Kyle Hendricks, but he ran into trouble in the eighth. He allowed a leadoff walk followed by a single, which put runners on the corners with no outs. Two more singles and a wild pitch in the inning plated two Pittsburgh runs. Edwards simply didn't have his best stuff in this one, but with a solid 3.49 ERA and elite 12.9 K/9, better days should be ahead for the 26-year-old.
Sep 1 2017Edwards allowed a hit and a walk, but still pitched a clean eighth inning Thursday against the Braves to record his 21st hold of the season. The 21 holds puts Edwards in sixth place in the National League in that category. He also struck out another batter Thursday, and his elite 12.9 K/9 makes him an interesting option, especially in leagues that count holds.
Aug 19 2017Edwards recorded his 18th hold of the season in Friday's win over the Blue Jays by retiring both batters he faced.Edwards came on for Jake Arrieta in the seventh inning and retired two hitters on 10 pitches, including one via strikeout. Edwards is tied for seventh in the National League in holds, making him a useful player in formats that count the stat. He's also got an elite 13.0 K/9, which gives him some value across all fantasy formats.
Aug 19 2017Edwards recorded his 18th hold of the season in Friday's win over the Blue Jays.Edwards came on for Jake Arrieta in the seventh inning and retired two hitters on 10 pitches, including one via strikeout. Edwards is tied for seventh in the National League in holds, making him a useful player in formats that count the stat. He's also got an elite 13.0 K/9, which gives him some value across all fantasy formats.
Aug 16 2017Edwards struck out all three hitters he faced in the seventh inning of Tuesday's loss to the Reds.Edwards entered a 0-0 game and made quick work of three Cincinnati hitters, striking them all out on 14 pitches (11 strikes). Since a four-run blowup on Aug. 6, Edwards has not allowed a run over his last four appearances. He's not receiving save opportunities, but his 13.0 K/9 could make him appealing in some formats.
Jul 26 2017Edwards recorded his 15th hold of the season in Tuesday's win over the White Sox. He pitched a perfect sixth inning with two strikeouts.Edwards and three other Chicago relievers pitched four scoreless innings in relief of starter John Lackey. Outside of a three-run blowup on Friday, Edwards hasn't been scored on in 8.2 innings of work this month, and he's recorded 15 strikeouts. The young right-hander should continue to provide good ratios, along with plenty of strikeouts and holds.
Jul 8 2017Edwards (3-1) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and recorded three strikeouts to earn his third win of the season Friday against Pittsburgh. The right-hander did issue a pair of walks, but held the Pirates without a hit. Edwards has bounced back after a rough June (5.40 ERA), and now has a 2.29 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 50 strikeouts over 35.1 innings this season. The 25-year-old has recorded 12 holds and is holding opponents to a .129/.257/.333 slash line.
Jun 27 2017Edwards recorded his 10th hold of the season in Monday's win over the Nationals. He struck out the side on 13 pitches in his lone inning of work. The Cubs used seven relievers behind starter Eddie Butler, and Edwards was first out of the gate in the sixth inning. With the three strikeouts, he now has 44 in just 31.1 innings this year. Edwards also has a sparkling 1.72 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, and he should continue to help fantasy owners with holds, strikeouts and solid ratios.
Jun 14 2017Edwards (2-1) got stuck with the loss after giving up three runs on two hits and a walk to the Mets in the eighth inning Wednesday. In a testament to how spectacular Edwards has been this year, he gave up as many earned runs Wednesday as he had in all 27 of his prior appearances put together. One rare bad outing won't hurt his status as one of the Cubs' top setup men behind Wade Davis.
Jun 12 2017Edwards (2-0) snagged a win in relief Sunday against the Rockies. He pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing a lone hit and striking out two. With Cubs starter Jake Arrieta going just 4.1 innings, Edwards came on in the fifth and pitched well. He's been very effective for Chicago this season, as he's now got a 1.07 ERA and 0.75 WHIP, to go along with 36 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. Edwards will continue pitching in a setup role, but could be an option for saves if Wade Davis had to miss any time.
Jun 5 2017With Wade Davis set to miss 1-to-3 games after landing on the paternity list Monday, Edwards could be in line for save opportunities in the short term. The Cubs like to talk about Edwards as a potential closer long term, and he may get his chance to show what he can do in the ninth inning while Davis is attending the birth of his child. Edwards has a 0.83 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 21.2 innings this season.
Apr 8 2015Edwards will start the season working out of the bullpen at Double-A Tennessee, the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports. The Cubs liked what they saw from Edwards in short stints this spring, and this gives them the flexibility to use him how they see fit later in the season. It's possible that he could move quickly to the big league level in 2015 and work out of the bullpen in Chicago. While Edwards is considered the Cubs' top pitching prospect in some circles, his skinny frame and injury history suggest he may be better served working as a reliever long term, so this should not come as a surprise.
Mar 19 2015Edwards was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Back in November, the Cubs selected Edwards' contract, adding him to their 40-man roster in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Tall and lanky at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Edwards reported to major league camp and fared well in his two Cactus League appearances, allowing just two hits with no walks while striking out two over three scoreless frames. He's still just 23 and has only 48 innings above High-A under his belt, but a late-season audition is by no means out of the question for Edwards.
Mar 18 2015Edwards pitched two scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday.Edwards has only appeared in two games this spring, but he didn't walk a batter in either game, and he hasn't yet given up a run either. Though he's probably not in the running for a rotation job this year, a good season should put him in the conversation next March.
Feb 28 2015Edwards (finger) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Any concern regarding the health of Edwards' finger, which was seen bandaged up Friday night, was dispelled with the right-hander completing the mound session. Apparently, it's just a minor issue with his fingernail. Manager Joe Maddon recommended a manicurist for the youngster.
Feb 7 2015Edwards has been invited to camp with the Cubs as a non-roster player, the Daily Herald reports. He'll join fellow prospect Pierce Johnson in big league camp. The Cubs have a long list of options available to compete for the final spot in the rotation, making it likely that Edwards will return to Double-A to begin the 2015 season before a potential late-season call to Chicago.
Nov 20 2014The Cubs added Edwards to their 40-man roster Thursday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.Edwards was limited to just 12 starts during the minor league season due to shoulder troubles, but he performed very well in those 12 outings (2.35 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) and showed no ill effects of the injury during his time in the Arizona Fall League (1.80 ERA, .154 BAA). He'll likely need to prove himself at the Double-A level for a large portion of 2015, but Edwards is already looking like the best piece the Cubs got in the Matt Garza deal and could end up earning a September callup.
Jul 26 2014In his first appearance in about three months, Edwards (shoulder) pitched two scoreless innings for the Cubs' Arizona League team Wednesday.Edwards has been on the shelf for almost the entire season, but he remains one of the best pitching prospects in the Cubs' system. He should be back up with Double-A Tennessee soon.
Jun 3 2014The latest MRI on Edwards' shoulder came back negative, Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com reports. The Cubs have routinely checked in on Edwards' shoulder since he was forced out of action due to inflammation in late April, and it seems they're finally confident enough in his health to begin thinking about a return to action. Edwards went 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA and 20 strikeouts in four starts with Double-A Tennessee to begin the season.
Apr 5 2014Edwards pitched four scoreless innings for Double-A Tennessee on Friday, striking out four and walking one. Most of the hype surrounding the Cubs' stable of prospects is around the hitters - it's easy to forget that Edwards and Pierce Johnson are nice prospects themselves. He could be in the Cubs' rotation before the year is out, especially if he keeps pitching like he did Friday.
Jan 16 2014Edwards is attempting to add some weight to his 155-pound frame, the Cubs' official site reports. "Anything I see, I eat," he said. "Last night at the hockey game, I had an Italian sausage, cheese fries, Sprite, Coke and a hot dog with cheese on it."We just wanted to get you prepared for all of the "best shape of his life" stories you're going to be reading in the next few months. Edwards, the Cubs' top pitching prospect, is probably about a year away from being able to regularly eat at the good Pizzeria Uno's.
Jul 22 2013Edwards was dealt to the Cubs on Monday along with pitcher Justin Grimm, third baseman Mike Olt, and a player to be named later for Matt Garza, FOX Sports reports.A 49th round pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, Edwards has more than exceeded expectations at Low-A Hickory. In 18 starts this season, the 6-2 right-hander has posted an 8-2 record, 1.83 ERA, 1.029 WHIP, and 122:34 K:BB ratio in 93.1 innings.
