Jun 27 2025Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said earlier this week that Snell (shoulder) is "probably not" close to facing hitters, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell took a step forward recently when he began using his full pitch mix during bullpen sessions, but Roberts' comments suggest the lefty hurler is still pretty far away from being activated from the IL. Snell has pitched in just two games for the Dodgers this season, with his last outing before landing on the injured list occurring all the way back on April 2. The veteran starter will presumably need to make multiple minor-league rehab appearances before he's ready to return to the big club, so it seems unlikely that he'll be ready to rejoin LA's rotation until after the All-Star break.
Jun 15 2025Snell (shoulder) threw approximately 20 to 25 pitches in a bullpen session Friday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After getting back on the mound and tossing 15 pitches in San Diego on Tuesday, Snell increased the volume and intensity of his throwing in his second bullpen session since he landed on the injured list April 6. The southpaw was limited to throwing fastballs in Friday's workout, so he'll have to incorporate his full arsenal in future bullpen sessions before he advances to facing hitters in live batting practice. Snell still has a chance to return from the 60-day injured list before the All-Star break, though he may need to head out on a rehab assignment within the next two weeks to make it a reality.
Jun 9 2025Snell (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell made about 10 throws off a mound over the weekend to a standing catcher, per Plunkett, and he's now ready to take the next step in his throwing progression. The lefty hasn't tossed from a mound since experiencing a setback in late April, so he'll likely need to make it through at least a few side sessions before facing live hitters.
Jun 2 2025Snell (shoulder) could resume throwing off a mound early next week in San Diego, Dodgersbeat reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell hasn't thrown from the bump since he experienced a setback with his left shoulder in late April, but he's made enough recent strides with his flat-ground work that he's almost ready to try things from a mound again. A timetable for Snell's return to the Dodgers' rotation could become clearer in the coming weeks if he's able to throw off a mound without any hiccups.
May 17 2025The Dodgers transferred Snell (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's move to the 60-day IL makes him ineligible to return until June 5, though he just began playing catch Wednesday and isn't expected to return for another several weeks anyway. While he continues working his way back, the Dodgers will give his spot on the 40-man roster to Clayton Kershaw (toe/knee), who was activated to start Saturday's game against the Angels.
May 14 2025Snell (shoulder) played catch from 60 feet out Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Some shoulder discomfort prevented Snell from beginning his throwing program over the weekend as originally planned, but he now has the green light from a doctor to begin playing catch. A better idea of when the 32-year-old will return to the mound for Los Angeles might emerge as he progresses further in his rehab, but he seems to be at least several weeks away.
May 11 2025Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Snell is still dealing with some discomfort in his left shoulder and wasn't able to resume playing catch Sunday as planned, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell appears to be stuck in a holding pattern in his recovery from left shoulder inflammation, which has kept him on the injured list since April 6. He had been able to resume throwing bullpen sessions less than two weeks after being shelved with the injury, but he experienced a setback in late April and received an injection in his shoulder to aid in his recovery. The injection doesn't appear to have resolved Snell's shoulder discomfort as quickly as anticipated, and the lefty is now set to meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday before the Dodgers determine his next steps. Even if he receives a positive evaluation from Dr. ElAttrache, Snell would still seem to be multiple weeks away from returning from the IL.
May 10 2025Snell (shoulder) is expected to play catch Sunday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was previously expected to resume throwing Friday, but manager Dave Roberts indicated that the hurler came down with an illness that "set him back a couple days." Snell hasn't thrown at all since late April and received a cortisone injection in the hope that it would help with the inflammation in his left shoulder. The left-handed pitcher is likely at least several weeks away from returning to the Dodgers' rotation.
May 2 2025Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reports Friday that Snell (shoulder) is expected to restart playing catch next week, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had his throwing program shut down after experiencing a setback with his left shoulder injury that caused him to be placed on the 15-day injured list April 6. He received a cortisone injection for his left shoulder this past Monday and will travel with the team to Miami next week to resume his throwing program.
Apr 19 2025Snell (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was Snell's first bullpen session since he landed on the 15-day injured list April 6 due to left shoulder inflammation. The veteran southpaw noted afterward that he feels "way better" throwing now than when he attempted to pitch through the injury, and he added that he'll need at least one more bullpen and a simulated game before there's a discussion on being activated from the IL.
Apr 14 2025Snell (shoulder) resumed his throwing program Monday by playing catch, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell landed on the 15-day injured list April 6 due to left shoulder inflammation that he initially tried to pitch through. He was shut down from throwing following his placement on the IL, but Monday's session indicates that the 32-year-old is progressing in his recovery, though he'll need work up to bullpen sessions before the Dodgers have a better idea of a return date for the veteran southpaw. Snell noted after the throwing session that he felt better than expected, and the club is hopeful he'll throw again Tuesday, per Matthew Moreno of DodgerBlue.com.
Apr 8 2025Snell (shoulder) will be shut down from throwing until Monday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that the team doesn't plan to give Snell any treatment while he's shut down, instead deciding to see how he responds to several days of rest. A timeline for his return will likely emerge once he's cleared to resume throwing, though a minimum-length stay on the IL is almost certainly off the table.
Apr 7 2025Snell revealed Monday that he had been dealing with left shoulder inflammation for the past three weeks before landing on the injured list Sunday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell thought he could pitch through the issue and that it would eventually subside, but he was unable to get through his last bullpen session, necessitating an IL move. The southpaw hopes to miss only a couple weeks of action, but it would not be a surprise if the Dodgers exercise more caution with their $182 million investment. Los Angeles will expand its rotation to six men this week, and Justin Wrobleski and Landon Knack are expected to be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the two openings Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Apr 6 2025The Dodgers placed Snell on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to left shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, Snell completed a bullpen session Sunday and informed the Los Angeles training staff afterward that his shoulder was bothering him. Rather than reassessing Snell in a few days and seeing if the inflammation dissipates, the Dodgers will send him to the IL, making him ineligible to pitch again for the big club until April 18. The Dodgers recalled right-hander Matt Sauer from Triple-A Oklahoma City to provide coverage in the bullpen in the short term, but Snell's absence means that the team will need to break in a new rotation member Tuesday in Washington.
Apr 3 2025Snell allowed five unearned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two batters over four innings in a no-decision against Atlanta on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell got no favors from his defense Wednesday, as Max Muncy committed a pair of early throwing errors and Andy Pages misplayed a flyball to center field that was courteously ruled a double. The errors prevented Snell from being charged with any earned runs, but he didn't help his own cause by issuing four free passes and uncorking a wild pitch. To his credit, Snell kept the Dodgers from falling into a deeper deficit after Atlanta took a 5-0 lead through two innings, and the southpaw managed to retire seven of the final nine batters he faced. Snell has had poor control early in his Dodgers tenure, as he's now walked eight batters over his first nine innings of the campaign. Walks have been an issue for him at various points in his career, but they've typically come with bunches of strikeouts; however, Snell has just four punchouts in his nine frames so far. That being said, there's no reason for fantasy managers to panic this early in the campaign, especially since Snell was a mess during his first handful of outings last year before turning things around and finishing in dominant form. He is tentatively slated to make his next start against Washington next week.
Mar 27 2025Snell (1-0) allowed two earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two across five innings to earn the win Thursday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell managed to limit runs and complete five innings to earn the win, though it wasn't a sharp debut with the Dodgers. He found the zone with only 53 of his 92 pitches and allowed multiple baserunners in three of his five frames. Snell will likely continue to run a relatively elevated walk rate based on his track record, but he should be able to pile up strikeouts more consistently in upcoming starts.
Mar 23 2025Snell has been officially named as the Dodgers' starter for Thursday's home opener against the Tigers, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell will draw his first start as a Dodger when the team resumes its regular season against the Tigers after winning both of its matchups in Japan against the Cubs on March 18 and 19. The left-hander produced a 3.12 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 145 strikeouts over 104 innings in 20 starts with the Giants in 2024, and he'll look to keep it up with Los Angeles in 2025.
Mar 9 2025Snell is slated to pitch in one of two exhibition games in Tokyo, Japan on March 15 and 16, and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts implied that the southpaw will start the team's home regular-season opener in Los Angeles on March 27, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A pair of Japanese-born hurlers -- Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki -- have been tabbed to start for the Dodgers in the regular-season-opening two-game series against the Cubs in Tokyo on March 18 and 19, but it doesn't appear that either of those pitchers will get the ball again for the team's stateside opener against Detroit on March 27. Instead, Snell is likely to get the call for that contest after joining Los Angeles on a five-year, $182 million contract in late November. Snell made his second spring start Sunday against the Athletics and gave up four runs on five hits over 3.2 innings, but he struck out five batters, averaged 95.2 mph on his fastball and threw 67 pitches, so he appears to be ramping up well for the regular season.
Feb 26 2025Snell threw one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in a Cactus League contest against Seattle on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell threw at least eight pitches to three of the four batters he faced, so he racked up a hearty pitch count of 30 despite allowing just one baserunner. Per Statcast, the lefty's fastball sat at 95-to-96 mph, which is right in line with where it's been over the past several seasons. After signing a five-year contract in November, Snell is slated to be part of a revamped Dodgers rotation that, on paper, looks to be one of the best in the big leagues.
Feb 24 2025Snell will pitch for the first time this spring Tuesday against Seattle, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell joined the Dodgers on a five-year contract in November and is set to be a key figure in the team's revamped rotation. The two-time Cy Young Award winner bounced back from a rough beginning with the Giants last year to finish with a 3.12 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 145:44 K:BB over 104 innings. Snell is unlikely to go more than an inning or two in his spring debut Tuesday. He's not expected to start in either of Los Angeles' two Tokyo games against the Cubs to kick off the MLB regular season, but manager Dave Roberts has indicated that Snell will pitch in one of the team's two exhibition games in Japan versus teams from the Nippon Professional Baseball Organization, per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register.
Nov 26 2024Snell signed a five-year, $182 million contract with the Dodgers on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After posting a 3.12 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 20 starts during his lone season with the Giants, Snell has now earned himself a long-term deal to stay in the NL West. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will be joining an already-impressive Dodgers rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Shohei Ohtani (shoulder).
Nov 1 2024Snell declined his $30 million player option for 2025 on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell probably would have stuck around had he been forced to make his decision following a slow start to his 2024 campaign. However, after collecting a microscopic 1.23 ERA and 114:30 K:BB over 80.1 innings over his final 14 starts, hitting the free-agent market again was a no-brainer. Presumably, Snell will stand a better chance this time around at landing the lucrative, multi-year deal he had looked for last winter.
Sep 22 2024Snell (5-3) allowed two hits and a walk over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out nine and earning a win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell did not allow a runner to reach scoring position in his dominant performance. He generated 12 whiffs on 88 total pitches and, at one point, struck out five straight batters. Snell has yielded two or fewer runs in eight consecutive starts, resulting in a terrific 1.31 ERA and 65:19 K:BB during that span. He owns a 3.12 ERA through 104 innings this season, but looking at his numbers since returning from the injured list July 9, that number drops to 1.23 through 80.1 frames. Snell's final start of the 2024 campaign is projected to be next weekend at home against the Cardinals.
Sep 17 2024Snell (4-3) earned the win Tuesday over Baltimore, allowing just one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was superb Tuesday, allowing a lone single in the second inning while racking up double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this year. The 31-year-old Snell has held opponents to two runs or fewer in 12 of his last 13 starts, posting a stellar 1.33 ERA in that span (74.1 innings). His ERA is down to 3.31 across 98 innings this season with a 1.08 WHIP and 136:43 K:BB. Snell's currently in line for a road start this weekend against the Royals.
Sep 12 2024Snell (3-3) picked up the win over the Brewers on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both walks and three of the four hits against Snell in the contest came over the first three innings. The lefty would then allow just one batter to reach over his final two frames while generating 17 swinging strikes on the night. The win was Snell's first since Aug. 7 against Washington, and he's now recorded eight or more strikeouts in eight of his last nine outings (excluding his previous start in which he was pulled after just one inning). He also hasn't allowed more than three runs in any outing since June 2 against the Yankees.
Sep 5 2024Snell did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks over one inning against the Diamondbacks. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell needed 42 pitches to escape the first inning thanks to a combination of a lack of control along with a lack of help from his defense. Snell was not hit hard, with only one ball leaving the infield but was done in by an infield single, a couple of walks, a throwing error that led to one run and a passed ball on a strikeout that was to have represented the third out and instead resulted in a second run crossing the plate. Despite only allowing one earned run, Snell's outing was complete following the inning. He entered the game with a 1.30 ERA over his previous 10 appearances while having struck out 10 or more four times while allowing one run or less during seven of those performances. He's next slated to take the hill when the Giants head to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers.
Aug 30 2024Snell allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a mixed bag in Seattle for his last start -- three hitless innings with two runs allowed on six walks -- Snell was back in control Friday. The southpaw has earned a quality start in eight of his last nine outings, though this was just the third time in that span he's limited opponents to one walk or fewer. Snell has been nearly untouchable since the start of July and now has a 3.56 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 114:37 K:BB through 86 innings over 16 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Diamondbacks.
Aug 24 2024Snell came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Mariners, giving up two runs over three no-hit innings. He walked six and struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw needed 74 pitches (42 strikes) to record only nine outs in his shortest outing since April 8. Snell hasn't walked more than three batters in a start since May 22 and he hadn't struck out fewer than eight since July 22, with Saturday's poor performance snapping a seven-game quality start streak in which he'd posted a 1.14 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 67:13 K:BB in 47.1 innings. Snell will look to shake this one off in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Marlins.
Aug 19 2024Snell did not factor into the decision in Sunday's win over the Athletics, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out 10 over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was engaged in a pitcher's duel with JP Sears for much of the game. The first run was eventually scored by the Athletics in the sixth inning and that's all Snell would give up. He did find himself in a bases loaded jam in the seventh with one out but was able to get out of it unharmed. Over his last eight starts, Snell has posted a 1.03 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 70:16 K:BB in 52.1 innings. He leads MLB starting pitchers in ERA and is tied for first in WHIP over that span. Snell also has double-digit strikeouts in four of his last five starts. For the year, the 31-year-old owns a 3.67 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 101:30 K:BB in 76 innings. He lines up for a home matchup against the Mariners his next time out.
Aug 12 2024Snell pitched 6.1 scoreless innings against Atlanta on Monday, allowing two hits and walking three batters while striking out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's excellence was on par with that of opposing starter Chris Sale, who fired seven scoreless frames with 12 punchouts. Snell didn't go quite as deep into the contest as Sale due to his 114 pitches, but he nonetheless recorded his sixth straight quality start after failing to accomplish that feat over his initial seven contests of the campaign. Snell struggled to begin his tenure with San Francisco and then missed over a month from early June to early July due to a groin strain. Since returning from that injury, the southpaw has been dominant, posting a 0.99 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 60:14 K:BB over 45.1 frames.
Aug 8 2024Snell (2-3) picked up the win in Wednesday's 7-4 victory over the Nationals, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty stumbled a bit in the third inning, allowing all three of his runs, including a two-run shot by Juan Yepez, but otherwise Snell had little trouble with the Washington lineup and generated 32 called or swinging strikes among his 93 pitches. It was a strong follow-up performance to his no-hitter against the Reds on Aug. 2, and Snell has reeled off five straight quality starts with a 1.32 ERA, 0.56 WHIP and 46:8 K:BB through 34 innings during that hot streak. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against Atlanta.
Aug 3 2024Snell (1-3) issued three walks while allowing no runs in a no-hitter against the Reds on Friday. He struck out 11 in the 3-0 win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell issued a walk in the second inning and two more in the fifth before retiring the last 13 batters he faced. He forced 21 swinging strikes on 114 pitches, including 10 via the curveball. Not only was it his first career no-hitter, but it was also his first career complete game. Snell is starting to look more like the Cy Young-winning version of himself after a rough start to the year. Since returning from the injured list a second time, he owns a sharp 0.55 ERA with a 41:10 K:BB over 33 innings. In his last two starts alone he's racked up 26 punchouts in 15 frames. Snell will carry a 4.29 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be in Washington.
Jul 27 2024Snell allowed two hits, two walks and struck out 15 over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was lights out on Saturday, registering a career high in strikeouts, but he did not receive any run support on his way to the no-decision. The 15 strikeouts were one shy of the franchise record, and it was the most in a single game by a Giants pitcher since Tim Lincecum in 2009. Snell has been red-hot in July with 30 strikeouts and just eight hits allowed in four July starts. He is the first Giants pitcher with at least 30 strikeouts and fewer than 10 hits allowed in a four-game span since 1911.
Jul 22 2024Snell allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's scoreless streak ended when Teoscar Hernandez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and the Dodgers' outfielder added a second run with an RBI single in the sixth. It was still Snell's second quality start in a row, and it's all the more impressive he was able to put in a good effort against a tough opponent. While his ERA is at 5.83 with a 1.37 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB over 41.2 innings, the southpaw is trending in the right direction now that he appears to be fully healthy. His next start is expected to come at home versus the Rockies.
Jul 14 2024Snell allowed one hit and struck out eight without walking a batter over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Twins on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, and he faced the minimum in his start by erasing the one hit he gave up with a double play. The left-hander was denied the win after Camilo Doval blew a save opportunity, but the Giants bounced back for the team victory. Snell has allowed two hits and three walks over 12 innings since returning from a groin injury, finally showing his skills after an injury-riddled start to 2024. He has a 6.31 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 42:17 K:BB through 35.2 innings over eight starts, but he should be considered a buy-low target in fantasy.
Jul 10 2024Snell (groin) didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays. He tossed five scoreless innings, striking out three while allowing one hit and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his return from a stint on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain, Snell carried a 9.51 ERA through his first six starts of the season but finally showcased a glimpse of the form he displayed throughout last year's Cy Young-winning campaign with the Padres. Snell was on a limited pitch count after making his first start in over a month, but he still managed to cover a season-high five innings on an efficient 73 pitches. His fastball topped out at 97.7 miles per hour, which was also a season high. Snell will look to push forward with one more solid start before the All-Star break; he's tentatively set to pitch over the weekend against the Twins.
Jul 9 2024The Giants reinstated Snell (groin) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell wrapped up his second IL stint of the season with a dominant rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday, when he gave up just one walk while striking out nine over five shutout innings. Tuesday will mark Snell's first start since June 2 against the Yankees, and across his six major-league starts this season he has a 9.51 ERA and 1.94 WHIP across 23.2 innings. To make room on the 26-man roster for Snell, the Giants optioned left-hander Kolton Ingram to Sacramento.
Jul 7 2024The Giants will reinstate Snell (groin) from the 15-day injured list and have him start Tuesday versus the Blue Jays in San Francisco, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As he prepares for his first start with the Giants since June following his second IL stint of the season, Snell will be taking the hill on five days' rest. The southpaw endured some bumps in the road in the first of his two rehab outings in his return from a left groin strain, but he was utterly dominant in his final start for Sacramento on Wednesday, tossing five no-hit, shutout innings while striking out nine. He'll tentatively line up for two starts during the upcoming week, with his second outing set to fall next Sunday versus the Twins in the Giants' final game before the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2024Snell (groin) struck out nine over five scoreless innings in his rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Sacramento. He allowed no hits and issued one walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his third rehab start with Sacramento since landing on the 15-day injured list June 3, Snell made quick work of the Reno lineup, needing just 67 pitches (46 strikes) to record 15 outs. Based on how well he performed in addition to increasing his workload, Snell should be ready to return from the IL next week to make his next start with the Giants. Snell should slot back into the rotation as soon as next Tuesday's series opener versus the Blue Jays.
Jun 29 2024Snell (groin) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday and is expected to rejoin the Giants rotation after their road trip that ends July 7, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell threw three innings in a start with Sacramento on Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts. The 31-year-old will require one more rehab appearance before being reinstated and is on track to make a start with San Francisco prior to the All-Star break. Snell owns a 9.51 ERA across 23.2 innings with the Giants this season.
Jun 24 2024Snell (groin) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday and start for Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell showed signs of rust during his first rehab appearance Sunday, and as expected, he'll make at least one more start in the minors before the club considers activating him from the 15-day injured list. The southpaw fired 51 pitches Sunday and will continue to build toward a full workload in his upcoming appearance as he makes his way back from a left groin strain.
Jun 23 2024Snell (groin) made a rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Sacramento, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while failing to strike out a batter across 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell wasn't particularly effective in the first start of his rehab assignment, throwing just 27 of his 51 pitches for strikes in a 5-4 win over Round Rock. Following the contest, the left-hander said he anticipates needing at least one more rehab appearance, if not more, stating that he wants to be "healthy and 100 percent" before he returns from the 15-day injured list, according to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle. Snell had been limited to just six starts in his first season with the Giants before landing on the 15-day injured list June 3 with a left groin strain.
Jun 22 2024Snell (groin) will make his first rehab start at Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell pitched three innings in a simulated game Tuesday, and the goal will be to build him up to 50 pitches during his first game in Triple-A. The Giants haven't announced whether they will keep the southpaw in the minors past Saturday or return him to their rotation right away, but a decision will likely be made shortly after his first start.
Jun 17 2024Snell (groin) is scheduled to throw a three-inning simulated game Tuesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the injured list once again due to a left groin strain after previously missing just over a month earlier in the season with a left adductor strain, Snell looks to be tracking toward an abbreviated stint on the shelf. He completed a bullpen session in San Francisco on Saturday and will now advance to the next phase of his rehab by facing hitters. If all goes well Tuesday, Snell could avoid a rehab assignment and return to the San Francisco rotation as soon as this Saturday or Sunday in St. Louis.
Jun 10 2024Snell (groin) is scheduled to throw off the mound later this week, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell landed on the injured list due to a mild left groin strain he sustained June 2 against the Yankees. He recently began throwing off flat ground, and the 31-year-old southpaw will take the next step in his rehab by throwing off a mound. Snell started in six games prior to his groin injury, going 0-3 with a 9.51 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB over 23.2 innings.
Jun 7 2024Snell (groin) began throwing off flat ground Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Assuming Snell has no issues with flat-ground throwing, the plan is for him to begin mound work at some point next week. It's still unclear if the 31-year-old southpaw will be able to return from the IL when eligible June 18, but some clarity may come once he's thrown a few bullpen sessions.
Jun 5 2024Snell has been diagnosed with a mild left groin strain following an MRI, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants expect to have a better idea Thursday as to a potential timetable for Snell, but the initial imaging seems to have revealed relatively good news. Snell's tenure with the Giants has gotten off to a rocky start, as he's posted a 9.51 ERA in five starts and made a pair of trips to the IL.
Jun 3 2024The Giants placed Snell on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left groin strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had to depart Sunday's start versus the Yankees with the injury. He had been set to undergo an MRI, and while the results of that exam have yet to be revealed, the strain is significant enough to cost the left-hander at least a couple weeks of action. It's uncertain who will fill Snell's spot in the Giants' rotation, but one option is having Keaton Winn (forearm) skip a rehab start and return this week.
Jun 2 2024Snell (groin) is set for an MRI and likely another stint on the injured list according to manager Bob Melvin, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell suffered a groin injury in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Yankees and he could be sidelined for multiple weeks. The team will likely make a decision on the left-hander's status moving forward Monday. If he is ultimately placed on the IL, it's possible that Keaton Winn (forearm) would be rerouted from his rehab assignment to join the Giants in Arizona prior to their three-game series with the Diamondbacks.
May 27 2024Snell allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over four innings in a no-decision against Philadelphia on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell went on the paternity list Thursday while awaiting the birth of his child, but he ended up taking his normal turn in the rotation. The left-hander set a season high with seven punchouts but again failed to complete five innings -- through five starts this season, he's topped out at 4.2 frames. Snell also has yet to allow fewer than three earned runs in an outing, and his ERA for the campaign sits at an unsightly 10.42.
May 26 2024Snell (personal) was reinstated from the paternity list Sunday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Snell is still awaiting the birth of his baby, despite stepping away from the team for the last three days in anticipation of welcoming a new addition to his family. The left-hander was placed on the paternity list a day after he made his most recent start Wednesday against the Pirates, but he won't end up missing a turn now that he's back on the active roster. He's expected to take the hill Monday against the Phillies, though he could go back on the paternity list during the upcoming week if his child ends up being born.
May 23 2024The Giants placed Snell on the paternity list Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell will be off the active roster for a few days while welcoming a new baby, but he's expected to rejoin the Giants in time for his next start, which is slated for Monday against the Phillies at Oracle Park. Reliever Nick Avila was called up from Double-A Richmond to take over Snell's spot on the 26-man active roster.
May 22 2024Snell didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against Pittsburgh, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks across 3.1 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell looked sharp to begin his first start after a month-long IL stint, keeping the Pirates scoreless after three frames. However, the 31-year-old crumbled in the fourth inning, yielding two walks, a hit-by-pitch and an infield single to let a run score and leave the bases loaded with one out for Sean Hjelle. Hjelle gave up a grand slam to the first batter he faced and pushed Snell's earned run total to four. Snell hasn't completed five innings in a start this season and is 0-3 with an 11.40 ERA through 15.0 innings. He's projected for a home start against the Phillies on Monday.
May 19 2024Snell (thigh) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list and make his next start for the Giants, likely Wednesday against the Pirates, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander made his second rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, and he's apparently ready to rejoin the Giants after he struck out 10 over five scoreless frames. Snell didn't give up a run across his two rehab outings, which is an encouraging development after he posted an 11.57 ERA in his first three MLB starts of the campaign after signing late in spring training.
May 14 2024Snell (thigh) will make another rehab start at Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell fired four perfect innings while striking out seven batters during his first rehab outing at Single-A San Jose, though he'll be facing some tougher competition during his next start. Assuming everything goes smoothly, Friday is expected to be the 31-year-old's final game in the minors, putting him in line to return from the IL and start May 23 against the Pirates.
May 13 2024Snell (adductor) said that he expects to make another rehab start before returning from the 15-day injured list, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had a dominant first rehab start with Single-A San Jose on Sunday, throwing an immaculate inning on his way to seven strikeouts across four perfect frames. The lefty threw just 46 pitches in the outing but did get in an additional 15 tosses in the bullpen after the appearance. Snell noted that the decision on where he will pitch next will ultimately be made by manager Bob Melvin and the team's medical staff, but the southpaw believes he could use another tune-up against stiffer competition. Snell is tracking toward a return from the IL early next week.
May 8 2024Snell (thigh) will throw a bullpen session Thursday and begin a rehab assignment at Single-A San Jose on Sunday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell began facing hitters Tuesday, and he has now been given the green light to test his injured thigh in a competitive setting. The left-hander may have his assignment moved to a higher-level affiliate after his rehab outing Sunday, though it is possible the Giants opt to return him to their rotation after just one start.
May 6 2024Giants manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Snell (thigh) will throw a three-inning live batting practice session Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was cleared to face hitters after a bullpen session Saturday went off without a hitch. The Giants will wait to see how the lefty responds to Tuesday's session before determining the next steps, but Snell is trending in a positive direction. Snell hasn't pitched in more than two weeks because of a Grade 2 left adductor strain.
May 3 2024Snell (thigh) will throw around 50 pitches Saturday during a bullpen session, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Bob Melvin said if all goes well, the team will make a decision on whether Snell will have a rehab assignment or face hitters in live batting practice next. It was already anticipated that Snell would need more than the minimum 15 days on the injured list with his Grade 2 adductor strain, so a mid-May return is still the best-case scenario.
Apr 30 2024Snell (thigh) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell landed on the shelf last week with a Grade 2 adductor strain, but he wasn't shut down from throwing for long. The left-hander hopes to spend close to the 15-day minimum on the injured list, though he seems likely to be sidelined a bit longer. A specific timeline for Snell's return could come into focus as he ramps up his throwing program.
Apr 24 2024Giants manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Snell could spend more than the minimum 15 days on the injured list after being diagnosed with a moderate left adductor strain, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell first felt the injury during a recent bullpen session and still was in discomfort when he attempted to throw again, necessitating a move to the IL on Wednesday. After Snell was scratched ahead of his scheduled start, the Giants tabbed Ryan Walker to open Wednesday's contest, with Mitch White being a candidate to cover multiple innings once Walker exits the contest. Melvin didn't provide details on how the Giants plan to fill Snell's spot in the rotation for what will be a multi-week absence.
Apr 19 2024Snell (0-3) took the loss Friday against Arizona, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell continued to look rusty in his outing Friday, allowing nine hits, a mark he hasn't reached since a June 16, 2021 start against in Colorado. The 31-year-old lefty has struggled tremendously out of the gate, generating an 11.57 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB in 11.2 innings. Snell looks to get back on track in his next start, slated to be against the Mets at home.
Apr 14 2024Snell (0-2) yielded seven runs on six hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out four and taking a loss against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell struggled out of the gate Sunday, coughing up three runs in the first inning. He later allowed a three-run homer to Rene Pinto that would be the deciding factor in the loss. Snell has been hammered for 10 runs over seven innings as he looks to shake off the rust after signing with the Giants late in Spring Training. The 31-year-old southpaw forced 12 whiffs Sunday, including five with his changeup. Snell is currently in line for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks.
Apr 8 2024Snell (0-1) took the loss against Washington on Monday, pitching three innings and allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell did well enough in the strikeout category and didn't allow any extra-base hits, but the control issues that were really his only flaw last year resurfaced in his first game as a Giant. The left-hander threw just 39 of 72 pitches for strikes and, unlike during his Cy Young 2023 campaign, he couldn't navigate around the free passes he issued. All of the damage against Snell came in the second inning, when he gave up three runs after walking two of the first three batters he faced. Snell's strikeout potential and history of success should make him a must-start option in fantasy every time he takes the mound, but the control issues are enough to make managers worry about his ability to come close to last year's level of excellence.
Apr 1 2024Snell will make his first start of the 2024 season April 8 against the Nationals, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has looked sharp while at extended spring training, and the team has decided that he's ready to make his regular-season debut. The southpaw will throw one more sim game later in the week in preparation, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, before he toes the rubber in looks to be a favorable matchup at his new home ballpark.
Mar 31 2024Snell struck out 11 batters while allowing three hits over four innings in his start Friday at extended spring training against the Giants' Double-A affiliate, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Because he didn't sign with the Giants until March 18, Snell didn't have enough time to get properly stretched out during spring training and was left off the 26-man Opening Day roster. However, after reportedly covering 74 pitches in his four-inning outing Friday, Snell looks set to make his next appearance with the big club in what will be his Giants debut. As Rubin notes, Snell could be available to start as soon as Wednesday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, though the Giants could be inclined to save him for Friday's home opener versus the Padres if they want to give him an additional two days of rest.
Mar 25 2024Snell could throw up to five innings in his next appearance, which is scheduled for Friday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants have yet to decide where Snell will throw Friday, but it's a good sign to see him continuing to ramp up after signing late in spring training. It's already been reported that the southpaw won't be ready for Opening Day, though how much regular-season action he'll miss remains to be determined. The club could have a better idea following his upcoming outing.
Mar 22 2024Giants manager Bob Melvin said Friday that Snell will pitch in a minor-league game Sunday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell threw his first bullpen session Thursday since signing with the Giants and over the weekend will get into some game action. The left-hander has already said he will not be ready for Opening Day as he ramps up his workload following a late signing. It's not clear when he might make his regular-season debut, but the Giants will determine Snell's next steps following Sunday's outing.
Mar 20 2024Snell said Wednesday that he will not be ready for Opening Day, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell said he got stretched out to 60 pitches while throwing on his own, but that's without the adrenaline of facing major-league hitters. The left-hander will throw a bullpen session Thursday and the Giants will set up a schedule for Snell after that. While the reigning National League Cy Young winner figures to be ready to make his first regular season start early on, a more specific timetable will be available following Thursday's mound session.
Mar 18 2024Snell agreed to a two-year, $62 million contract with San Francisco on Monday, which includes an opt-out after the 2024 season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell finally has a landing spot after several teams balked at his asking price over the offseason and into spring training. He'll benefit from one of the more pitcher-friendly home ballparks in Oracle Park and join 2023 National League Cy Young finalist Logan Webb at the top of the Giants' rotation to form one of the deadliest one-two punches in all of baseball. It remains to be seen how soon Snell will be able to ramp up for the 2024 season with only 10 days remaining before Opening Day, but he just tossed four simulated innings Friday and could make an appearance in a game situation later this week, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Mar 15 2024Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that Snell threw four simulated innings in Seattle in front of scouts Friday, including from the Giants and Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported earlier Friday that Astros owner Jim Crane desires the services of Snell after not being able to acquire him during the trade deadline. The left-hander has been tied to a number of teams in the offseason and is open to signing with a team on a short-term contract, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today on March 4. Snell posted a 14-9 record over 32 starts with a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB over 180 innings last season with the Padres.
Mar 4 2024Snell's agent Scott Boras revealed Monday that the two-time Cy Young winner is open to signing with a team on a short-term contract, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nightengale notes that Snell was seeking a long-term deal in excess of $250 million at the beginning of free agency, though it appears the reigning NL Cy Young winner has shifted from that stance. Boras also represents Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman, both of whom elected to sign short-term deals with options to opt out at the end of the 2024 season. Snell seems open to go that route as he looks to stick on a roster with Opening Day approaching. The 28-year-old left-hander registered a 14-9 record over 32 starts with a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB over 180 innings.
Feb 27 2024Snell and the Yankees discussed a potential contract Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees have reportedly put multiple offers on the table for Snell this offseason, but the two sides don't currently appear to be making much progress toward a deal. The left-hander won the NL Cy Young Award with the Padres last season after he posted a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB over 180 innings, but a league-worst 13.3 percent walk rate and just two seasons over 130 frames in his MLB career have likely played a part in his asking price not yet being met.
Sep 25 2023Snell allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was again sharp, firing his fifth scoreless outing of six or more innings in his last six starts. He ended up with a second straight no-decision after the Giants got to Robert Suarez in the eighth inning. Snell lowered his ERA to 2.25 with a 1.19 WHIP and 234:99 K:BB through 180 innings over 32 starts this season. He's tentatively lined up for a road start versus the White Sox this weekend, but the Padres may not push their ace for one more outing since their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread after Monday's loss.
Sep 20 2023Snell did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four walks over seven scoreless innings against Colorado. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres got another incredible outing from Snell on Tuesday, as he fanned 10 Rockies across seven innings without allowing a single hit. However, the Padres failed to put up any runs until the ninth inning, eradicating Snell's hopes for a fifth consecutive win. Over his last five appearances (32 innings), Snell owns a 0.56 ERA and a 43:17 K:BB. He'll look to continue his hot streak during his next start, which is projected to come against the Giants at Oracle Park early next week.
Sep 13 2023Snell (14-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell picked up his seventh straight quality start, and he's kept runs off the board in three of his last four outings. This sharp start lowered his ERA to 2.43 with a 1.22 WHIP and 217:93 K:BB through 167 innings over 30 starts this season. It was also the first time since June 22 that Snell didn't walk multiple batters. The southpaw is projected for a home start versus the Rockies next week.
Sep 8 2023Snell (13-9) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win over the Astros on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell gave up runs for the first time in three starts, but it was still his sixth consecutive quality start. Over his last three starts, he's posted a 25:12 K:BB across 19 innings. Despite a walk rate that's been among the highest in the majors all year, Snell continues to put together solid outings with a 2.52 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 209:92 K:BB through 161 innings over 29 starts. The southpaw is projected for a challenging road start versus the Dodgers next week.
Sep 2 2023Snell (12-9) allowed three hits and four walks while striking out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Giants on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has walked multiple batters in 13 straight starts, but he hasn't given up more than three runs in any of them. In eight of those starts, he's walked four or more batters. The southpaw's 5.2 BB/9 is tied for the worst of his career with his rookie season, but he's somehow managed to be effective anyway with a major-league best 2.50 ERA. He's also at 201 strikeouts through 155 innings, which makes this Snell's second 200-strikeout campaign. He's projected to make his next start in Houston.
Aug 28 2023Snell (11-9) allowed two hits and five walks over seven shutout frames Monday, striking out nine and picking up a win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's command was shaky yet again but he continues to dominate. It was his first scoreless appearance since July 30 and he lowered his ERA to 2.60 through 149 innings. Over his last 18 outings, Snell has posted a terrific 1.38 ERA with a 145:58 K:BB. The NL Cy Young candidate is currently expected to face the Giants at home this weekend.
Aug 22 2023Snell (10-9) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres mustered just three hits and two walks for the game, giving Snell virtually no run support. He was able to come away with his third straight quality start, but he's started to come back to earth with 10 runs allowed over his last 23 innings. For the season, the southpaw has a 2.73 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 184:80 K:BB through 142 innings over 26 starts. Snell is projected for a favorable road start in St. Louis early next week.
Aug 16 2023Snell (10-8) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another quality start for Snell, who has given up two or fewer runs in all but one of his last 16 outings. The southpaw was able to limit the damage to a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a Ryan Mountcastle solo home run in the sixth. Snell is now at a 2.65 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 176:78 K:BB through 136 innings over 25 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Marlins next week.
Aug 12 2023Snell (9-8) yielded two runs on two hits and four walks over six innings Friday, striking out seven and earning a win against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After giving up a run in the first inning, Snell held the Diamondbacks off the board until serving up a solo homer to Ketel Marte in the sixth. Snell's dominant stretch continued as he allowed fewer than three runs for the 14th time in his last 15 starts. He's registered a 1.16 ERA during that stretch, giving him a 2.63 ERA alongside a 171:76 K:BB through 24 outings. The only downside is that he's walked at least three batters in eight consecutive starts. Snell is expected to face the Orioles at home next week.
Aug 5 2023Snell allowed three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out eight over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's impressive run of 13 starts without allowing more than two runs came to a close, though it happened against a tough division rival. The southpaw was in line for the loss until the Padres rallied ahead in the eighth inning. Snell's 1.30 WHIP and 164:72 K:BB aren't the most encouraging marks, but he's allowed just 12 homers in 23 starts this season to offset an ugly 5.2 BB/9. That's helped him maintain a 2.61 ERA through 124 innings on the year. Snell is lined up for another challenging start on the road in Arizona during next weekend's series.
Jul 31 2023Snell (8-8) allowed one unearned run on four hits and four walks over five innings Sunday, striking out nine and earning a win against Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has been outstanding for the last two months despite his inflating walk rate. He registered a 42:26 K:BB through 32 July innings but gave up just two earned runs. He's given up two or fewer runs in 13 straight starts, resulting in a terrific 0.73 ERA with a 108:41 K:BB through 74 frames over that span. Snell's next outing is projected to be at home against the Dodgers.
Jul 25 2023Snell (7-8) earned the win Tuesday versus the Pirates after he gave up one run on two hits and five walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's command was a bit scattershot as he threw just 54 of 102 pitches for a strike and issued three-plus walks for the fifth straight outing, but he still limited Pittsburgh to a single run. The left-hander has walked 22 batters across 27 frames during that five-start stretch, but he's somehow managed to give up just a pair of runs. It remains to be seen how long Snell can continue to walk the tightrope like that, and a likely matchup with the Rangers this weekend will be a tougher test.
Jul 21 2023Snell (6-8) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and seven walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell managed to limit the Blue Jays to one run over five frames despite issuing a season-high seven walks. Unfortunately, the Padres' offense was unable to back him with any run support as the lefty went on to suffer his eighth loss of the season. Snell has allowed only one run over four July starts, lowering his season ERA to 2.67 in the process.
Jul 16 2023Snell didn't factor into the decision in a 6-4 loss to the Phillies during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing three hits and three walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings with another dazzling performance and exited the game with the Padres ahead 3-0, but the bullpen quickly squandered the lead. Snell hasn't been scored upon since the first inning of a June 28 outing against the Pirates and hasn't given up more than two runs in a start since May 25, posting a stunning 0.62 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 91:25 K:BB in 58 innings over that latter stretch while going 5-1. Not much has gone right for San Diego this season -- the team sits five games below .500 after getting swept in Saturday's twin bill -- but Snell re-discovering his Cy Young form has been one of the bright spots.
Jul 8 2023Snell (6-7) allowed a hit and three walks while striking out 11 over six scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had a pedestrian start to the season, then surged to end the first half. Over his last nine starts, he gave up just four runs with an 84:22 K:BB over 53 innings. He's walked multiple batters in seven of those outings, and his 1.22 WHIP is unlikely to be able to sustain a 2.85 ERA over the rest of the campaign, but he's been in peak form otherwise. His first start after the All-Star break is likely to be against the Phillies.
Jul 3 2023Snell (5-7) allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out seven over five scoreless innings to earn the win Monday over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell threw just 55 of 100 pitches for strikes in a wild start, but the Padres' offense gave him plenty of run support early on. His streak of four straight starts with double-digit strikeouts came to an end, but he's gone eight outings in a row without allowing more than two runs. Snell has a 3.03 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 121:46 K:BB through 92 innings across 17 starts. The 30-year-old is projected for a home start versus the Mets this weekend.
Jun 29 2023Snell (4-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings in a 7-1 loss against the Pirates. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell struck out at least 10 batters for a fourth consecutive outing and has given up two or fewer runs in seven straight appearances. During that stretch, he's posted a 0.86 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 66:15 K:BB across 42 innings. Despite taking the loss Wednesday, Snell is still in the midst of a stellar stretch and will look to maintain his strong play during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled during a three-game homestand versus the Angels.
Jun 23 2023Snell (4-6) earned the win Thursday, allowing three hits over six scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out 11 without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's red-hot June continued as the lefty pitched six innings of shutout ball for the second straight start and third time in four starts this month. The only real trouble he faced on the afternoon came in the fifth inning, when he allowed back-to-back singles with two outs. However, he got himself out of the jam by striking out Bryce Johnson and then proceeded to strike out the side in the sixth to finish with double-digit strikeouts for the third consecutive game. Snell holds a ridiculous 0.50 ERA over his last six starts to go along with a 56:13 K:BB in 36 innings.
Jun 17 2023Snell (3-6) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out 12 over six shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's excellent stretch continued for a fifth straight start, and this one came against his old team. Over his last 30 innings, the southpaw has allowed just two runs while posting a 45:13 K:BB. He's had 12 strikeouts in each of his last two starts, and he's enjoying some of his best pitching in years. Saturday's gem lowered his ERA to 3.48 with a 1.29 WHIP and 93:40 K:BB through 75 innings over 14 starts. Snell's next outing is projected to be on the road in San Francisco next week.
Jun 15 2023Snell (ankle) is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell contended with swelling in his left ankle after being struck by a comebacker during his most recent start Sunday in Colorado, but neither the injury nor pitching at Coors Field prevented him from delivering his best outing of the season. The veteran southpaw set season highs in both innings pitched (seven) and strikeouts (12) while allowing one run on just three hits and one walk. After a middling start to the season, Snell has been rolling over his last four turns through the rotation, pitching to a 0.75 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 33:10 K:BB in 24 innings over that stretch. With the swollen ankle apparently not proving to be too bothersome during his between-starts bullpen session, Snell looks like he'll face no restrictions Saturday while facing off against his former team for the first time.
Jun 11 2023Snell was removed from Sunday's game against the Rockies due to swelling in his ankle, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was hit by a comebacker on his left ankle in the bottom of the seventh inning and initially remained in the game, but he was replaced in the bottom of the eighth due to swelling. However, the southpaw underwent X-rays that came back negative and said after the game that he's fine. He allowed a run on three hits and no walks while striking out 12 in seven innings prior to his removal, and it seems likely that he'll be able to make his next turn through the rotation.
Jun 5 2023Snell (2-6) earned the win over the Cubs on Monday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out eight batters over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell didn't resolve his season-long command issues -- he handed out multiple free passes for the sixth straight outing -- but he yielded just two hits, both of which were singles. The left-hander also racked up 17 whiffs and fell one shy of his season high with eight strikeouts. Snell appears to be finding his groove, as he has posted back-to-back scoreless starts, during which he has surrendered just five hits and tallied 15 strikeouts over 12 innings. His ERA was up to 5.40 through May 19, but with three strong outings since then, it now stands at a much more respectable 4.06.
May 20 2023Snell (1-6) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks over four innings against the Red Sox. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell continues to struggle, as he's currently on pace to have the worst season of his career with a 1.56 WHIP and 13.4 percent walk rate. This was also the former Ray's worst appearance of the season, ballooning his ERA from 4.61 to 5.40. The southpaw is tentatively slated to face the Nationals on the road in his next start.
May 13 2023Snell did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell is now starting to turn a corner after a rough start to the year. The southpaw has just a 3.50 ERA in the month of May, and this was just his second start of the year where he did not allow a home run. Fantasy managers can start to feel a bit more confident in him heading into his next tentative start against the Royals.
May 6 2023Snell (1-5) allowed two runs on a hit and three walks while striking out six over six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was unlucky Saturday -- the only hit he surrendered was a two-run home run to Chris Taylor in the fourth inning. The Padres' offense mustered a mere one run on five hits and three walks. Snell's earned quality starts in his last two outings, but he's also given up at least one homer in six straight appearances. He's at a 4.89 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB through 35 innings over seven starts this season. The southpaw is lined up for a rematch with the Dodgers in Los Angeles next week.
May 1 2023Snell (1-4) allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell coughed up a two-run double to Stuart Fairchild in the third inning followed by Nick Senzel's solo shot in the fourth. It was the fifth straight game in which Snell gave up at least one home run. The 30-year-old lefty forced 17 whiffs, his highest total since recording 19 in his season debut. He picked up his first win and lowered his season ERA to 5.28 alongside a 33:18 K:BB through 29 frames. Snell is currently lined up to face the Dodgers at home this weekend.
Apr 6 2023Snell pitched 3.2 innings against Atlanta on Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two batters. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell gave up a single run in each of the first and third innings, but a Matt Carpenter three-run homer in the top of the fourth staked him to a 3-2 lead. The left-hander was unable to hold that advantage, however, as he allowed five batters to reach base -- the final three by walk -- in the bottom of the frame before being forced to exit. Control has long been an issue for Snell, and he's off to a poor start in that regard this season with five walks over his first eight innings. He's also given up seven earned runs, and though his strikeout potential is tantalizing, he's not going to be able to go very deep into games if he's unable to get the free passes under control.
Mar 30 2023Snell (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Rockies, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's season debut echoed a trend for him in recent campaigns -- he struck out plenty of batters but threw so many pitches (93) that he was unable to go deep into the game. To the left-hander's credit, he issued just one walk, and two of the three runs against him came after he departed the contest. Snell should be a great source of punchouts again this season as long as he stays healthy, but he hasn't posted an ERA better than 3.24 or a WHIP better than 1.20 since his Cy Young 2018 campaign.
Mar 14 2023Snell has pitched in two Cactus League contests for the Padres, allowing three runs on four hits while posting a 6:2 K:BB over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has allowed just six baserunners through his first seven innings, but he's been stung by two long balls against him. Homers weren't a big problem for the lefty last season -- he gave up 11 over 128 frames -- so there's no reason to draw any implications from the small spring sample. Snell historically doesn't go deep into games and tends to issue too many walks, but he can pile up strikeouts and pitched well enough last season (3.38 ERA, 2.79 FIP, 1.20 WHIP) to justify a selection in the first third of fantasy drafts.
Oct 19 2022Snell earned the win after five innings of work Wednesday during Game 2 of the NLCS, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six in the 8-5 win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell gave up all four of his earned runs in the second inning when the Phillies piled on a few bloop singles as well as a fly ball into the sun that Juan Soto was unable to keep his eyes on. Despite the tough luck in the second, Snell was able to settle down and give the Padres a chance to come back, which they did. The 29-year-old lefty has always put up solid postseason numbers, so it is no surprise that he was able to settle down and give the Padres a chance to win. Snell has a career 3.36 ERA and 61 strikeouts in the postseason spanning 48.2 innings.
Oct 11 2022Snell will start in Game 3 of the Padres' NLDS matchup with the Dodgers on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing two earned runs and six walks over 3.1 innings in Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Mets, Snell will get a chance to bounce back against the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLDS. His most recent outing against the Dodgers came on Sept. 27 with a five-inning shutout performance in which he allowed just one hit and struck out six batters.
Oct 6 2022Snell will start Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series on Saturday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Yu Darvish is getting the starting nod for Friday's series opener, and Snell will draw the Game 2 start over Joe Musgrove, who is a likely candidate to start Game 3 if needed. Snell was dominant over his final four regular-season starts, posting a 0.72 ERA, 32:6 K:BB and 0.64 WHIP in 25 innings over that stretch. He last pitched Sunday, so he'll be fully rested for Saturday's matchup.
Oct 2 2022Snell (8-10) took the loss during Sunday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of the White Sox, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell held Chicago in check until the sixth inning, when a one-out Elvis Andrus solo shot put him in line for the loss. The 29-year-old tossed 60 of 103 pitches for strikes with 12 of the swinging variety and has surrendered one earned run or fewer in six of his last seven starts, lowering his ERA from 4.14 to 3.38 in the process. Snell concludes the campaign with a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 171 strikeouts in 128 innings across 24 starts. His 12.2 K/9 rank second among players with at least 70 innings.
Sep 27 2022Snell didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and walking three while recording six strikeouts in five scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell limited the damage to four baserunners across five innings and departed with a two-run lead, but Los Angeles immediately tied the game upon his exit. The 29-year-old continued his excellent performance of late and possesses a 1.80 ERA with 49 strikeouts across 35 innings during his last six turns. Snell seems to have found his stride a bit later than fantasy managers would've preferred though he should be good for one more start this season, tentatively scheduled to come Sunday against the White Sox.
Sep 22 2022Snell (8-9) earned the win over St. Louis on Wednesday, pitching seven scoreless innings during which he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and he picked up the first two outs in that frame before Albert Pujols ended the bid at history with a single. Juan Yepez followed with another hit, but Snell finished the inning by striking out Paul DeJong. The lefty hurler fired a season-high 117 pitches and tied a career high with 13 punchouts. Though he's still under .500 on the season and holds a just-decent 3.62 ERA, Snell is peaking at the right time. Over his past five appearances, he's notched four quality starts while posting a 2.10 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 43:9 K:BB over 30 innings.
Sep 16 2022Snell (7-9) allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven without issuing a walk in seven innings to earn the win Friday over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's lone mistake was a Christian Walker solo home run in the fourth inning. Beyond that, Snell turned in his longest outing of the year and one of his best, as well as his third quality start in his last four games. The lefty trimmed his ERA to 3.85 with a 1.29 WHIP and 146:45 K:BB across 110 innings through 21 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Cardinals next week.
Sep 10 2022Snell (6-9) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was fine through four innings, allowing just a third-inning run and four hits. However, he was pummeled for four runs without recording an out in the fifth, with the big blow coming on a three-run double off the bat of Trea Turner. Snell had allowed just one run over his past 12 innings coming into the start, but he was unable to continue that momentum and took his career-worst ninth loss of the campaign. The left-hander's season ERA rose to 4.02 as a result of the poor outing.
Sep 5 2022Snell (6-8) took the loss against Arizona on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Snell was tagged with the loss, he picked up his second straight quality start and eighth of the campaign. The left-hander also notched double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this season, and he racked up an impressive 20 swinging strikes. Snell has rebounded from a rough start against Cleveland on Aug. 24 to allow just one run over 12 innings while posting an 18:4 K:BB across his subsequent pair of starts.
Aug 30 2022Snell (6-7) earned the win Tuesday over the Padres, allowing four hits, three walks and a hit batsman over six scoreless innings while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was locked in for a start against an NL West rival, bouncing back from a six-run disaster against Cleveland last Wednesday. This was his third scoreless start in 18 outings this season. He got his ERA back under 4.00 (3.97) with a 1.33 WHIP and 124:41 K:BB through 93 innings. Snell is tentatively projected for a home start versus the Diamondbacks next week.
Aug 24 2022Snell (5-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on eight hits and four strikeouts over 3.1 innings against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell surrendered two home runs to third baseman Jose Ramirez, the second of which was followed by a home run from Oscar Gonzalez on the next at-bat. In the six starts prior to this blowup, the lefty had been enjoying an outstanding stretch with a 1.60 ERA and 46 strikeouts over 33.2 innings. The 29-year-old has been slightly worse at home with a 3-5 record and 4.42 ERA in 53 innings compared to a 2-2 record and 3.97 ERA in 34 innings on the road.
Aug 19 2022Snell allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings, taking a no-decision versus the Nationals on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell hadn't allowed multiple runs in any of his five previous starts and only once in his last eight, but the Nationals got to him in the fourth and fifth innings in this contest. The southpaw has struck out at least seven in five straight outings. For the season, he's posted a 3.76 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 112:38 K:BB across 83.2 innings through 16 starts. Snell is lined up for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.
Aug 14 2022Snell (5-6) allowed three hits and no walks while striking out 10 in six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Nationals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell gave up five run in 3.2 innings during his final start prior to the All-Star break, but he's been dominant in his five starts since then and has posted a 4-1 record across that span. The southpaw has posted a 0.94 ERA, 39:5 K:BB and 0.91 WHIP in 28.2 innings over his five starts to begin the second half and tentatively lines up for a rematch against the Nationals at home Friday.
Aug 8 2022Snell (4-6) allowed one run on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Monday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth inning but escaped the threat after giving up just one run. Aside from that, the 29-year-old southpaw didn't face much resistance from San Francisco's lineup. He's now allowed one run or fewer in four consecutive starts and six of his last seven dating back to the start of July. During that stretch, Snell has posted a 57:17 K:BB while lowering his season ERA from 5.60 to 3.96. He'll look to continue his dominant stretch in Washington this weekend.
Aug 4 2022Snell (4-5) earned the win over Colorado on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was dominant in the victory, racking up 14 swinging strikes and holding the Rockies to just one extra-base hit. The southpaw capitalized on San Diego's five-run first inning to cruise to his third straight win and fourth over his past five contests. That has brought his record up to 4-5 on the season after he opened the campaign without a victory through his initial eight starts. Over his past three appearances, Snell has posted a 1.06 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB across 17 frames.
Jul 29 2022Snell (3-5) earned the win Friday over the Twins. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Twins' lone run in the 10-1 contest was Byron Buxton's solo home run off Snell in the fourth inning. All three of Snell's wins this season have come in July -- he's gone 3-0 this month with eight runs allowed in 25.2 innings, a notable improvement compared to how he started the campaign. He owns a 4.43 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 78:34 K:BB across 61 innings in 12 starts overall. The 29-year-old southpaw is projected for a home start against the Rockies next week as he looks to carry his strong form into August.
Jul 24 2022Snell (2-5) picked up the win over the Mets on Saturday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell needed 85 pitches to get through five frames, but he yielded only one extra-base hit and kept New York off the scoreboard. The southpaw issued multiple walks for the 11th time in 11 starts this season, but he fared much better than in his six-walk, five-run , 3.2-inning outing against Colorado in his final start before the All-Star break. Snell's control issues and 4.75 ERA have made him a risky pitcher in fantasy this season, but he's been coming around with two wins and three outings of one run or fewer over his past four starts.
Jul 14 2022Snell allowed five earned runs on four hits and six walks while striking out five across 3.2 innings Thursday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell looked sharp in the first inning, retiring the side in order. However, that was the highlight of his outing as he proceeded to give up a season-high six walks and five earned runs. Coors Field does offer some excuse for the poor effort, particularly because Snell entered Thursday's start having allowed only two earned runs across his last 11 innings and two starts. However, he still has a 5.22 ERA and 66:31 K:BB across 50 innings on the season.
Jul 8 2022Snell (1-5) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out 11 over six innings to earn the win Friday versus the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had arguably his best start of the year despite allowing a home run for a third straight outing. This was his second consecutive start with double-digit strikeouts, and the third time this year he's completed six innings. The southpaw is starting to trend in the right direction after allowing only two runs through 11 innings to begin July, and he now has a 4.66 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:25 K:BB across 46.1 innings overall. Snell is on track to make his last start of the first half on the road in Colorado next week.
Jul 1 2022Snell allowed a run on four hits and four walks while striking out 12 in five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was arguably Snell's best start of the year, though he gave up a solo home run to Max Muncy and walked four batters for the second time in eight starts. Snell still remains in search of his first win, as he was outplayed by Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin in this one. Snell has a 5.13 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 50:23 K:BB across 40.1 innings. He's projected for a home start versus the Giants next week.
Jun 25 2022Snell (0-5) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell got through four scoreless innings before allowing the Phillies to put up three runs in the fifth. Jorge Alfaro hit a two-run double to get the Padres within one, but Snell gave one back on Alec Bohm's RBI double in the sixth. The southpaw continues to be on the hunt for his first win, having lost five of his seven starts this year while allowing at least three runs in five of them. He has a 5.60 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 38:19 K:BB across 35.1 innings overall. Snell's projected for a tough road start versus the Dodgers next weekend.
Jun 20 2022Snell (0-4) took the loss Sunday against the Rockies, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out five and walking four over 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has had a rough start to his 2022 campaign, allowing three or more earned runs in four of six appearances. He was mostly inefficient Sunday in throwing 49 of 89 pitches for strikes. The lefty also walked a season-high four batters. Snell certainly has some adjustments to make as he will take a 5.46 ERA into his next appearance.
Jun 12 2022Snell didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 4-2 loss to Colorado, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell retired 12 of 13 Rockies in the first, second, third and sixth innings but struggled in the fourth and fifth, surrendering a combined seven baserunners and two runs in both frames. Through five starts, the 29-year-old possesses a 5.04 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 29 strikeouts with 13 walks in 25 innings. Snell will go for his first win with a rematch against German Marquez and the Rockies scheduled for next weekend.
Jun 7 2022Snell (0-3) took the loss against the Mets on Monday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell got off to a poor start, allowing five of the first seven batters he faced to reach base as New York took an early 3-0 lead. He bounced back with two straight scoreless frames before the Mets tagged him for another run in the fourth, and he departed after the first two batters reached base (one by error) against him in the fifth. Snell has taken losses in three of his four stats this season, though this was the first time he has given up more than three runs in an outing. He'll look to get in the win column in his next start, which is lined up to come at home against Colorado this weekend.
May 31 2022Snell allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six in six innings of a 3-2 defeat Tuesday in St. Louis. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both runs against Snell came in the third inning as he allowed two walks, a double and a sacrifice fly. He settled down over the last three frames and retired the Cardinals in order each inning. It was the lefty's best start of the season and the first time he completed six innings. His next start will likely come early next week against the Mets.
May 24 2022Snell (0-2) took the loss during Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Brewers, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell surrendered only one baserunner through four innings but was stung for a Mike Brosseau solo homer in the fifth and put two on in the sixth before Craig Stammen allowed a Tyrone Taylor three-run home run. The lefty tossed an impressive 104 pitches with 15 swinging strikes in only his second start of the campaign, though both outings have resulted in losses. Snell has permitted six runs on six hits and five walks in nine innings and will go for his first win early next week against St. Louis.
May 19 2022Snell (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 3.2 innings as the Padres fell 3-0 to the Phillies. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw tossed 84 pitches in his first start of the season, but only 46 of them were strikes and he got no help from his offense. Snell's return from a groin injury has pushed MacKenzie Gore and Nick Martinez out of the rotation for now, but he'll need to stay healthy and effective to keep it that way.
May 18 2022The Padres activated Snell (groin) from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday in Philadelphia, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell is finally ready to make his 2022 debut for the Padres after he was scratched ahead of what would have been his first start of the season April 10 due to left adductor tightness. The injury ultimately forced an extended trip to the IL, but Snell looks to be healthy again after recently completing a three-start minor-league rehab assignment. He stretched out to five innings and 59 pitches in his final minor-league outing May 10, so Snell should be capable of offering the Padres a decent amount of length Wednesday.
May 15 2022Snell (groin) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Phillies, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was scratched from his start during the opening weekend of the season due to groin soreness, but he's now poised to make his 2022 debut Wednesday in Philadelphia. Snell made three minor-league rehab appearances and threw 59 pitches over five innings during his last outing with Triple-A El Paso, so he figures to face some workload limitations in his first couple big-league starts.
May 10 2022Snell completed five innings for Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and no walks while striking out seven to earn the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In his third minor-league rehab appearance -- and first at the Triple-A level -- Snell extended to five frames and tossed 59 pitches. The latter number was seven pitches fewer than he threw in his previous rehab outing, but Snell was more effective Tuesday in limiting his opponent to just one run. The Padres haven't yet announced the next step for the left-hander, though manager Bob Melvin has suggested that this was likely his final rehab start, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune.
May 9 2022Snell is scheduled to make his third rehab start at Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Snell set to continue his rehab assignment, the Padres will temporarily delay making any changes to their six-man rotation, which will allow back-end arms MacKenzie Gore and Nick Martinez to pick up at least one more start. Considering that Snell built up to four innings and 66 pitches in his last rehab start May 4, he shouldn't face any major restrictions with his workload when he makes his return from the 10-day injured list next week for his 2022 debut with the big club. Assuming he comes out of Tuesday's outing with El Paso with no setbacks, Snell could be brought back from the IL to start as early as Sunday's game in Atlanta, though it's possible the Padres wait until next week's series in Philadelphia to add him back into the rotation.
May 5 2022Snell (groin) made his second minor-league rehab start Wednesday with Single-A Lake Elsinore, covering four innings and striking out eight while giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second straight rehab outing, Snell tossed four innings, but he built his pitch count up from 44 in his April 28 start to 66 in Wednesday's outing. Though Snell is likely capable of giving the Padres a decent amount of length if they elect to return him from the 10-day injured list early next week, it's possible the organization wants to have him make one more minor-league appearance before slotting back into the rotation. Whenever Snell makes his return to the active roster, the Padres will likely have to remove one of MacKenzie Gore or Nick Martinez from what would still be a six-man rotation.
Apr 26 2022Snell (groin) is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab appearance with High-A Fort Wayne on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell tossed 38 pitches in a simulated game Saturday, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com, and he appears to have come out of that session without experiencing any setbacks. The southpaw hasn't pitched in a game since spring training, as he landed on the injured list in mid-April due to left adductor tightness. Should Snell's rehab appearance Thursday go well, he could make his season debut with San Diego sometime in early May.
Apr 22 2022Snell (groin) is expected to throw a simulated game Saturday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell went on the 10-day IL after groin tightness prevented him from making a scheduled start April 10. He threw a bullpen session April 19 and is scheduled to face batters in a simulated game Saturday. If that goes well, Snell could return to the Padres by the end of the month.
Apr 17 2022Snell (groin) is in line to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Snell wasn't able to avoid the injured list due to his left groin injury, he could be in store for a minimum-length stay on the shelf if his throwing session Tuesday goes according to plan. However, with Snell due to miss a second straight turn through the rotation Wednesday versus the Reds, rookie MacKenzie Gore will pick up at least one more start.
Apr 14 2022Snell (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to April 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has said his left adductor tightness is "way more minor" than the issue he dealt with in 2021, but he'll still be forced to miss at least one turn through the rotation. He'll be eligible to return as early as April 22 since the move was backdated to Monday, but a timetable for his return isn't yet clear. Left-hander MacKenzie Gore was called up to take his place in the rotation and is scheduled for his big-league debut Friday versus Atlanta.
Apr 13 2022Snell (groin) will be placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was scratched from his scheduled start against the Diamondbacks on Sunday due to groin tightness. Although the southpaw said that the issue is "way more minor" than the groin injury that forced him to miss time late in the 2022 season, he'll still be forced to spend time on the 10-day IL. The move will likely be backdated by a few days, but it's not yet clear when Snell will be able to return to game action.
Apr 12 2022Snell (groin) is expected to play catch Tuesday and could still make his next scheduled start against Atlanta on April 15, though a trip to the injured list remains a possibility, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was scratched from his start against Arizona on Sunday after experiencing tightness in his groin while warming up in the bullpen, but the left-hander later said that the injury is "way more minor" than the groin issue that caused him to miss his final few starts at the end of 2021. He's slated to test the groin by playing catch Tuesday, which could give clarity about whether he's headed for a trip to the injured list. Manager Bob Melvin hasn't ruled Snell out of making his next start, though he seems to be leaning toward playing it safe with the hurler. "I'm a little skeptical based on the fact that he had to be scratched...but I don't want to get ahead of myself....We're always going to be cautious, this early in the season," Melvin said Monday.
Apr 10 2022Manager Bob Melvin said Sunday that Snell (groin) will likely require a trip to the 10-day injured list, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was scratched from Sunday's start against Arizona due to adductor tightness, and he'll be forced to miss at least a week and a half. The southpaw dealt with a similar issue last season, but Melvin said that Snell's current injury isn't nearly as serious. Nabil Crismatt took his place as Sunday's starter, but MacKenzie Gore is a candidate to be called up to take Snell's place in the rotation.
Apr 2 2022Snell pitched 1.1 innings against Arizona on Thursday, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks. He did not strike out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell's 2021 campaign ended early due to a groin injury, and he has been brought along slowly this spring as a result of a delayed ramp-up due to the lockout, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego-Union Tribune. The southpaw threw 45 pitches in his Cactus League debut and struggled with his control, as only 20 of his offerings were strikes. It's hardly cause for panic that a pitcher wasn't sharp in his first spring appearance, though the control issues have some relevance given that Snell posted a 4.8 BB/9 last season -- his worst mark since his rookie campaign. Snell should be able to log one more spring start, and he's likely to open the campaign limited to 4-5 innings his first few times out, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
Mar 26 2022Snell worked the equivalent of two innings in live batting practice on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was the first time this season that the left hander faced hitters as he works his way into form following a groin injury suffered in September. Following the successful session, Snell is expected to make his first Cactus League start on Thursday and pitch up to three innings.
Sep 28 2021Snell (groin) hasn't been ruled out from return to pitch this season, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Padres were eliminated from the postseason over the weekend, but they could still have an impact on the NL West title with three-game sets against the Dodgers and Giants this week. That could be enough motivation for Snell to make one final start in 2021, though that's far from a guarantee given the southpaw's lingering groin issue. San Diego manager Jayce Tingler has indicated that the team isn't closing the door on Snell's return completely, stating, "We still have a ways to go before ultimately we make a call with Snell. But he's doing everything in his power to try to get back on the mound one more time."
Sep 19 2021The Padres don't expect Snell (groin) to pitch again in a game setting until the postseason, should San Diego secure a wild-card spot, ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The second-place finisher in the National League West -- the Giants or Dodgers -- has already locked up the first wild-card spot, while less than three games separate the Cardinals, Phillies, Padres and Reds for the second and final postseason berth. Even though the Padres are still in contention, the decimated state of the pitching staff coupled with the team's sluggish offense in recent weeks have seemingly left San Diego limping to the finish line. With that in mind, Snell appears more likely than not to be done for 2021, as he has yet to resume throwing since sustaining the left adductor strain during his Sept. 12 start. If the Padres are on the brink of elimination during the final week of the regular season, there's a high likelihood the team won't entertain having Snell ramp up and instead hand him ample recovery time to overcome the injury. Snell has largely failed to meet expectations during his first season in San Diego, but before going down with the injury, he had usurped Yu Darvish as the team's clear No. 1 starter since the beginning of August. Over his last eight starts, Snell turned in a 1.83 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and a 65:14 K:BB across 44.1 innings.
Sep 15 2021Snell was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left adductor groin strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was removed from Sunday's start against the Dodgers after only 11 pitches due to the injury, and he'll require stint on the injured list before rejoining the rotation. The left-hander was initially expected to be ready to make his next start, but he's continued to feel soreness over the past couple days and will miss some time. Vince Velasquez signed a minor-league deal with the Friars and is expected to fill Snell's spot in the rotation for now.
Sep 14 2021Padres manager Jayce Tingler said that Snell (groin) was feeling a little more sore and tender than expected Monday, one day after the lefty exited his start against the Dodgers with left adductor tightness, Annie Heilbrunn of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he said he's hopeful Snell will still be ready to make his next turn through the rotation this weekend in St. Louis, Tingler acknowledged the possibility of the team having to turn to another pitcher to make a spot start. The San Diego rotation has been ravaged by injuries throughout the second half, and Snell's bout with adductor tightness comes at particularly tough time after Chris Paddack (elbow) landed on the injured list Monday.
Sep 12 2021Snell left Sunday's game against the Dodgers due to left adductor tightness. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell removed himself from Sunday's game after throwing just 11 pitches, and he had a slight limp as he left the field. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw will be forced to miss his next turn through the rotation, but he tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against St. Louis on Friday.
Sep 8 2021Snell (7-6) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Angels despite tossing seven innings of two-run ball, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had an excellent outing and tossed 70 of his 100 pitches for strikes while posting double-digit strikeouts for the third straight start. However, he was the victim of poor run support since the Padres only mustered four hits throughout the entire game. It's worth noting that Snell has tossed at least seven frames while allowing two or fewer runs in each of his last three starts, a span in which he's also posted an excellent 31:4 K:BB across 21.2 innings.
Aug 31 2021Snell (7-5) earned the win over Arizona on Tuesday, pitching seven scoreless and hitless innings during which he walked two batters and struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell came within six outs of pitching his first career no-hitter, but manager Jayce Tingler elected to pull him from the game after 107 pitches. The fact that the left-hander threw a career-high 122 pitches in his previous outing likely contributed to his removal, and Snell said after the game that the decision was "just smart," according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. The 28-year-old punched out 10 batters for the second straight outing and induced an impressive 19 swinging strikes while extending his recent run of strong starts -- he has now allowed three of fewer runs in each of his past six outings, posting a 1.72 ERA and 54:12 K:BB across 36.2 innings over that stretch. Snell's next start will likely come at home against the Angels early next week.
Aug 26 2021Snell allowed one run on three hits and struck out 10 over a career-high 7.2 innings Wednesday against the Dodgers but did not end up factoring into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell went toe-to-toe with Walker Buehler in this one. He held the Dodgers scoreless over seven innings and went back out for the eighth despite being at 106 pitches. The 28-year-old southpaw opened the frame with a strikeout but would end up surrendering a game-tying homer to Will Smith. He remained in to face Cody Bellinger and punched him out, ending his day at 10 strikeouts and a career-high 122 pitches. Snell generated an outstanding 21 whiffs on the evening and has been impressive this month with a 2.12 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 44:10 K:BB over 29.2 innings. He's reached the seven-inning mark twice over his last four starts after managing to do so just one other time this season. Snell now owns a 4.58 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 149:65 K:BB over 114 innings. He lines up for a favorable start against the Diamondbacks next week, a team he's had incredible success against in three tries so far this year.
Aug 21 2021Snell (6-5) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Phillies after allowing three runs on two hits and two walks across five innings, striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has recorded at least six strikeouts in each of his last four appearances and has notched at least nine punchouts in four starts throughout the year, but that wasn't enough to get the win here. Even though Snell has pitched more than five innings just once in four starts this month, he hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of those outings and owns a 2.45 ERA across 22 innings in that stretch.
Aug 14 2021Snell pitched five innings against Arizona on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell didn't come close to matching the seven-inning, 13-strikeout performance he produced against Arizona his last time out, but he at least kept San Diego in the game by surrendering just two runs over five frames. The left-hander threw 61 of 101 pitches for strikes and walked fewer than three batters for the first time in his past eight starts. Snell has shown improvement with providing length of late, going at least five innings in three straight starts after doing so only four times in his previous 13 outings. He'll likely make his next start at Coors Field against Colorado next week.
Aug 8 2021Snell (6-4) won Sunday's 2-0 shutout of Arizona, allowing two hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell dominated Arizona all game, throwing 72 of a season-high 108 pitches for strikes, and was never threatened by a weak lineup. After going more than four innings just once in July, the former Cy Young winner has won consecutive starts to begin August, achieving a new season high in pitches in each and permitting just a single run across 12 total innings.
Aug 4 2021Snell (5-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Athletics after tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and three walks while fanning six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has been very inconsistent this season and interspersed some particularly poor outings among his strong performances, but Tuesday's effort certainly qualified under the latter category. Snell has posted four starts with one or fewer runs allowed over his last seven appearances, but he has given up at least four runs in each of the remaining three in that span, including two starts in which he gave up seven runs. Despite the success against Oakland, it remains difficult to trust him due to those inconsistencies, which are reflected in the 5.24 ERA he'll carry into his next start.
Jul 29 2021Snell (4-4) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits and four walks while fanning one in Wednesday's loss against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had a rough outing Wednesday and has been very inconsistent of late, as he has given up four or more earned runs in three of his last six appearances. The lefty owns a 5.44 ERA on the season, which is a huge step in the wrong direction after he posted a 3.24 ERA during the shortened 2020 campaign.
Jul 22 2021Snell (4-3) allowed a run on three hits and three walks while striking out eight in six-plus innings to earn the win Thursday over Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old completed six innings for just the third time in 18 starts this year. In his three longest starts, he's allowed a combined two runs. Snell was on the hook for one of Miami's two runs in the seventh inning, but he got a well-earned win Thursday. Overall, he's struggled to a 4.93 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 104:51 K:BB through 80.1 innings this season. He continues to walk batters at an alarming rate of 5.7 BB/9, which has led to shorter outings due to high pitch counts. Snell projects to make his next start at home versus Oakland next week.
Jul 18 2021Snell pitched four innings against Washington on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game was suspended in the sixth inning due to a shooting outside the park, but Snell had already departed and been ruled out of factoring in the decision. The left-hander struggled with his control, throwing only 42 of 74 pitches for strikes and walking more batters (four) than he struck out (three). Walks have been a major factor in Snell's struggles this season -- Saturday marked the second straight game in which he walked four batters, and he has issued multiple free passes in all but two of his 17 outings. In fact, his 5.81 BB/9 ranks second-worst among MLB hurlers who have tossed at least 50 innings. Snell will look to turn things around in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to take place in Miami on Thursday.
Jul 17 2021Snell (illness) was activated from the injured list as expected Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell battled a non-COVID illness late in the first half, making just a single four-inning start since June 22. His first half-season in San Diego didn't go as planned, as he struggled to a 4.99 ERA while walking a career-worst 13.8 percent of opposing batters, but his strong 29.2 percent strikeout rate suggests his upside is still there for the second half.
Jul 16 2021Snell (illness) has been confirmed as the probable starting pitcher for Saturday's game against Washington, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell didn't make his last scheduled start prior to the All-Star break due to gastroenteritis, and the club wound up putting the left-hander on the injured list so it could bring up another pitcher. The Padres said that they expected Snell to be fine to pitch during the series against the Nationals, and now he's officially scheduled to make his return to the mound Saturday. It's not clear at this point if the 28-year-old will face any sort of strict pitch count with him having gone 13 days between starts.
Jul 11 2021The Padres are planning on Snell (illness) returning from the injured list next weekend to start Saturday's game against the Nationals, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Snell was scratched ahead of his scheduled start this past Friday in Colorado with gastroenteritis, the Padres elected to hold him out of the entire series with the Rockies and placed him on the 10-day injured list. The move was mostly a matter of roster flexibility, as Snell is expected to make a full recovery from the stomach illness well before the minimum 10 days. The Padres will reconvene on Thursday following the All-Star break, and assuming Snell is able to throw a bullpen session that day without issue, he should be cleared to start Saturday's contest.
Jul 9 2021Snell was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with gastroenteritis, retroactive to July 6. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was scratched from his Friday start against Colorado as he continues to feel fatigue from the illness. His move to the IL comes as no surprise, and he'll be eligible for activation when the club returns from the All-Star break July 16. Reiss Knehr was recalled from Double-A San Antonio to start in place of Snell on Friday.
Jul 8 2021Snell (undisclosed) is struggling to build up his strength following his previous start and may not start Friday against the Rockies as scheduled, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander threw 81 pitches over four scoreless frames Sunday after a brief stint on the shelf with a non-COVID illness, but he's apparently still not fully recovered from the ailment. Even if Snell is cleared to start Friday, he may face some workload limitations if he's less than 100 percent.
Jul 4 2021Snell allowed two hits and four walks while striking out three in four scoreless innings in Sunday's win over the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell missed his last turn through the rotation due to a non-COVID illness, and he tossed 81 pitches in his return. The southpaw had some issues with command, as he only threw 39 of his pitches for strikes and issued four walks. However, Snell has now tossed nine scoreless innings across his last two starts. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rockies on Friday.
Jul 3 2021Manager Jayce Tingler is confident that Snell (COVID-19 injured list) will be able to start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday due to an illness and was placed on the COVID-19 IL as a precautionary move. The southpaw never tested positive for the virus and is fully vaccinated, so he was cleared to rejoin the team Thursday and played catch that day. It appears as though Snell should be able to rejoin the rotation for Sunday's series finale in Philadelphia.
Jul 1 2021Snell (COVID-19 injured list) was cleared to rejoin the team Thursday and was spotted playing catch on the field prior to the Padres' series finale versus the Reds in Cincinnati, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was deactivated Wednesday after he was scratched from his scheduled start a day earlier after falling ill, but his placement on the IL appears to be precautionary more than anything. The veteran lefty is fully vaccinated and never tested positive for the virus, so he should be eligible for reinstatement from the IL in the near future. Snell tentatively lines up to rejoin the rotation Sunday against the Phillies, though the Padres could move him up a day or two in the pitching schedule if manager Jayce Tingler wants to extend some rest to the team's other four starters.
Jun 30 2021Snell (illness) was placed on the injured list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was scratched from Tuesday's start against the Reds due to an illness, and he'll now move to the shelf so the Friars can add another arm. According to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune, the 28-year-old is fully vaccinated and tested negative for COVID-19, so it shouldn't be an extended absence. The team didn't specify whether Snell was placed on the 10-day IL or the COVID-19 IL, and if it's the latter he can be activated as soon as he's feeling better. He should be considered unavailable until the team updates his status, though it's possible he's able to rejoin the rotation within the week.
Jun 29 2021Snell has been scratched from his Tuesday start against the Reds because of illness. Craig Stammen will start in his place. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune, manager Jayce Tingler said Snell is dehydrated and dealing with "stomach stuff." It's not clear at this point if the left-hander could be an option to start later during the series in Cincinnati. Stammen figures to be the first of multiple relievers to pitch in what figures to be a bullpen game for the Padres on Tuesday.
Jun 23 2021Snell (3-3) earned the win Tuesday against the Dodgers after tossing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell bounced back from an ugly start against the Rockies the last time out, when he allowed seven runs across just 3.1 innings. He picked up his third win of the campaign Tuesday. He's been hit-or-miss recently and owns a 4.66 ERA across four starts this month. His next start is scheduled for next week at Cincinnati.
Jun 16 2021Snell allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks with just one strikeout in 3.1 innings versus Colorado on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell allowed multiple homers for just the second time in 14 starts this year. While long balls haven't been a problem, he allowed multiple walks for the 12th time. The southpaw has now failed to complete five innings in six of his last eight outings. He has a 5.72 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 85:37 K:BB in 61.1 innings overall. Snell's next start is expected to be versus the Dodgers in next week's showdown between NL West powerhouses.
Jun 11 2021Snell (2-3) gave up three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts across four innings, taking the loss versus the Mets on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had little trouble through four innings, but he allowed four straight batters to reach in the fifth before Austin Adams relieved him. It was a disappoint setback for Snell, who threw seven shutout innings versus the Mets in his previous start. The southpaw has an uninspiring 4.97 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 84:35 K:BB across 58 innings this year. He's failed to complete five innings in five of his last seven starts. The 28-year-old lines up for a home start versus Cincinnati next week.
Jun 5 2021Snell (2-2) earned the win Friday against the Mets after tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and walking one while striking out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has fanned seven or more in four of his last five outings and has recorded two double-digit strikeout games in that stretch, but this was his best game of the season by a wide margin, especially since he had given up 12 earned runs across 6.2 innings over his previous two appearances. The left-hander saw his ERA decrease to 4.83. While he's lacked consistency all season long, this outing should be a massive confidence booster for him. His next start is scheduled for next week on the road against the Mets once again.
May 30 2021Snell (1-2) allowed seven runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in three innings and took the loss to Houston on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw's two worst starts of the season have been his two most recent outings. He got into trouble right away Sunday, allowing four runs in the first inning. Snell then struggled through the third before Joe Musgrove handled the rest of the pitching duties for the game. Snell has seen his ERA balloon from 3.79 to 5.55 during his poor run. He's added a 1.60 WHIP and 70:31 K:BB across 47 innings overall. The 28-year-old lines up for a home start versus the Mets next weekend.
May 24 2021Snell (1-1) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks over 3.2 innings Monday, striking out seven in the loss against Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell coughed up a two-run shot to Manny Pina in the second inning and was later taken deep by Avisail Garcia for a solo homer in the fourth. The 28-year-old lefty was removed after a two-out, two-run single by Kolten Wong in the fourth frame. His ERA bounced to 4.50 after allowing a season-high five runs. Snell is lined up to take the mound in Houston this weekend.
May 19 2021Snell did not factor in the decision Tuesday versus Colorado despite allowing only one run over six innings. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was easily Snell's finest start as a member of the Padres, as he tossed six innings for the first time in 2021, racked up a season-high 11 strikeouts, and issued less than two walks for the first time on the campaign. The southpaw racked up 17 swinging strikes and escaped with only one run on his ledger despite the fact that four of the five hits against him went for extra bases. Snell will carry a 3.79 ERA and 60:25 K:BB into his next start, which is expected to come in Milwaukee on Monday.
May 12 2021Snell didn't factor into the decision in a 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Rockies during the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw tossed 84 pitches (53 strikes) in another short, inefficient outing. Snell has yet to pitch more than 5.1 innings in a start this year while issuing multiple free passes in each outing, but his 4.19 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 34.1 frames are far from terrible as he tries to find his form in his first season outside of Tampa Bay.
May 7 2021Snell pitched 4.2 innings against San Francisco on Friday, allowing four runs on one hit and six walks while striking out five. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander threw only 47 of 95 pitches for strikes in the contest, leading to six free passes and negating the fact that the Giants managed only one hit against him. That hit -- a third-inning home run off the bat of Buster Posey -- was good for two runs, and Snell was charged with another pair of runs when two batters he walked in the fifth came around to score after his departure. Snell's first season with San Diego hasn't been as smooth as hoped. Despite registering a respectable 4.15 ERA, the veteran hurler has tallied a career-worst walk rate and has yet to pitch six full innings in a contest. He'll carry a 42:21 K:BB into his next start, tentatively slated for Wednesday at Colorado.
May 1 2021Snell (1-0) earned the win versus San Francisco on Saturday, tossing five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell didn't have great command of the strike zone Saturday -- he threw only 52 of 91 pitches for strikes and walked a trio of batters -- but the left-hander wiggled out of a pair of bases-loaded situations and ended up in the win column for the first time since joining San Diego. He has yet to pitch six innings this season, limiting his value in fantasy leagues that county quality starts, but has been moderately effective with a 3.51 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 37:18 K:BB across 25.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up to face the same Giants squad next weekend, this time in San Francisco.
Apr 25 2021Snell tossed 5.1 innings against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell held the Dodgers mostly in check and was in position for a win over 5.1 frames, but he was removed with one out in the sixth inning after having thrown a modest 87 pitches. The move backfired on the Padres, as the bullpen gave up three runs in the remainder of the frame en route to a loss. Snell has yet to get out of the sixth inning this season, though he hasn't yet given up more than three runs in a game. He'll carry a 3.92 ERA into his next start, currently scheduled for Saturday at home against San Francisco.
Apr 18 2021Snell allowed two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings in Sunday's win against the Dodgers. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell recovered from a disastrous performance against the Pirates on Tuesday, holding the strong Dodgers offense to two runs. His damage came at the hands of Chris Taylor's two run home run in the second inning. Besides the Snell's Pirates performance, the 28-year-old has three solid starts. However, he hasn't been able to go deeper than five innings yet this season. The southpaw still has a high strikeout rate with a 14.3 K/9.
Apr 14 2021Snell allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out a batter in just two-thirds of an inning against Pittsburgh on Tuesday and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tuesday's outing was incredibly uncharacteristic for the former Cy Young winner. Snell started out well after getting the first two hitters out and then completely fell apart, allowing six consecutive batters to reach. He let up a single and two doubles while also walking two and hitting a player, amounting to three runs for the Pirates before he handed the ball over to Craig Stammen with the bases loaded. Snell appeared to have some struggles with locating his pitches in this one as it was the second time in his career he's failed to make it out of the first inning. He'll look to turn things around in an enticing duel against Trevor Bauer and the Dodgers on Sunday.
Apr 7 2021Snell allowed two earned runs on two hits and four walks while striking out eight across five innings Wednesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell allowed a two-run home run in the second inning, but otherwise had little trouble with the Giants. Though his four walks stand out, three of his free passes came in the fourth inning -- one of which was intentional. Even with that inefficiency, Snell needed only 87 pitches to retire 15 batters. Through two starts with the Padres, he's allowed two earned runs across 9.2 innings while racking up an 18:6 K:BB. Snell currently lines up to make his next start Tuesday at Pittsburgh.
Apr 3 2021Snell hurled 4.2 scoreless innings against Arizona on Friday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell looked good in his first game as a Padre, racking up 18 swinging strikes and whiffing eight batters. He fell one out shy of qualifying for the win, however, as manager Jayce Tingler chose to pull him after Snell threw 86 pitches before finishing the fifth inning. Limited pitch counts have haunted the southpaw in the past, of course, but he figures to have a longer leash in San Diego as the season progresses. He'll look to build upon a solid first start when he faces San Francisco at home Wednesday.
Mar 28 2021Snell hurled five scoreless innings against the Angels in a Cactus League contest Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell concludes his first spring as Padre without yielding a run across 14.1 frames. Collectively, the southpaw gave up only five hits while posting a 13:4 K:BB. He's slated to start San Diego's second game of the regular season, Friday at home against Arizona.
Mar 3 2021Snell gave up one walk and secured one strikeout across one inning in Wednesday's Cactus League contest versus Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell needed only 15 pitches to get through his lone frame, using a double play to wipe out a walk to the second batter. He figures to build up over the spring and should be given a longer leash with San Diego this season than the Rays allowed him in 2020, when Snell never went deeper than 5.2 innings.
Dec 29 2020Snell's anticipated move from Tampa Bay to San Diego was confirmed Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The trade, which sends Luis Patino, Francisco Mejia, Blake Hunt and Cole Wilcox the other way, was originally announced Sunday but was pending medical review. With that process having been completed, Snell can now head to his new home in the NL West. The 28-year-old lefty has seen his ERA jump around from 1.89 to 4.29 to 3.24 over the past three years, but his strikeout and walk rates have remained very consistent. The former sat in a narrow band between 31.0 and 33.3 percent over that stretch, while the latter sat between 8.9 and 9.1 percent. Snell looks set to remain one of the top starters in the game as a Padre.
Dec 27 2020Snell is set to be traded to San Diego from Tampa Bay for Luis Patino, Francisco Mejia, Blake Hunt and Cole Wilcox, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. The deal is pending a review of medical records. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell had a 3.24 ERA and 11.3 K/9 last season in a bounce-back campaign atop the Rays rotation. He'll move to the top of the Padres' rotation and could be allowed to go deeper into games. Snell never pitched into the seventh inning last season, including infamously being pulled after 5.1 innings with a lead in Game 6 of the World Series.
Oct 27 2020Snell recorded 5.1 innings of work Tuesday, allowing one run and two hits while striking out nine in a loss to the Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell fanned nine, yet he was unable to escape the sixth inning. Upon allowing a single to Austin Barnes, the southpaw was controversially pulled from the game by manager Kevin Cash. It is also worth noting that Snell never made it six innings all season. The 27-year-old threw 48 of his 73 pitches for strikes and recorded a first-pitch strike on nine of the 18 batters that he faced.
Oct 21 2020Snell recorded 4.2 innings of work Wednesday, allowing two runs, two hits and four walks while striking out nine in a win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell looked sharp Wednesday, fanning nine in his start. His lone mistake came on a two-run homer to Chris Taylor in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old threw 49 of his 88 pitches for strikes while inducing 13 swinging strikes. The Rays have been careful with the left-hander, who has dealt with minor injuries throughout his career. Snell will see action again if the series continues to get extended.
Oct 17 2020Snell allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four across four innings to take the loss against the Astros in Game 6 of the ALCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was pulled having thrown just 82 pitches after allowing the first two batters of the fifth inning to reach base. He was unsteady through the first four frames -- he allowed at least one baserunner in three -- but the only run charged to him came after he exited the game. If the Rays advance to the World Series, Snell will likely be a candidate to start Game 2 on Wednesday.
Oct 15 2020Snell will start Friday in Game 6 of the ALCS against the Astros, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell will be on normal four day's rest after allowing one run across five innings while earning the win in Game 1 on Sunday. The southpaw has fanned 15 and posted a 2.87 ERA across 15.2 innings during three starts this postseason.
Oct 12 2020Snell allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings in a win over the Astros on Sunday in Game 1 of the ALCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After giving up three homers to the Yankees in a loss in Game 1 of the AL Division Series, Snell rebounded in a major way, with the lone blemish being a long ball off the bat of Jose Altuve in the first inning. The 2018 AL Cy Young winner was not fully stretched out when the 2020 season began and he still has not completed six full innings in a start this season. That said, Snell ranked 15th during the regular season in strikeout rate (min. 50 IP) and the team clearly still has a lot of faith in him, even if the lefty has yet to recapture that same magic from a few years ago. He should start Friday if there is a Game 6.
Oct 6 2020Snell took the loss to the Yankees on Monday in Game 1 of the ALDS. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Clint Frazier, Kyle Higashioka and Aaron Judge all took the lefty yard, the latter two in the fifth inning. As John Romano of the Tampa Bay Times notes, Snell was constantly working from behind and went to three-ball counts to seven different hitters. He could not locate his fastball and as a result had to rely more on his changeup and curveball. Even with his struggles Monday, it still seems likely Snell would start Game 5 on short rest if the Rays are able to force a Game 5.
Sep 29 2020Snell fired 5.2 scoreless innings Tuesday as he earned the win against the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the Wild Card Round. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell cruised in his 5.2 innings of work, refusing to allow a runner to reach second base. The 27-year-old lefty threw 48 of his 82 pitches for strikes as he left the Jays guessing all night. After recording a 3.24 ERA in the regular season, the southpaw will look to carry his dominance into his next start, which would be in the ALDS if the Rays advance.
Sep 26 2020Snell will start Game 1 of the Rays' Wild Card series Tuesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell allowed two earned runs over 7.2 innings in two outings against the Blue Jays -- Tampa's most likely opponent -- this season, and he has a 2.81 ERA across 13 career starts against Toronto overall. He'll head into the postseason opener with some momentum after posting a 2.20 ERA, 9.9 K/9 and 18:6 K:BB across the 16.1 innings cover his last three regular-season starts.
Sep 23 2020Snell (4-2) was the pitcher of record in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Mets after giving up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After keeping the ball in the yard in both of his past two starts, Snell couldn't keep the streak going Tuesday, as both Robinson Cano and Yonder Alonso took him deep for solo shots. That was enough offense to back Mets starter Seth Lugo, who outdueled Snell by allowing only two runs (one earned) over 6.1 innings. Snell was at least able to match his season high in strikeouts, with the southpaw racking up 22 swinging strikes among his 108 pitches. Manager Kevin Cash said after the game that Snell would make his next start in the first game of the Rays' playoff opener Tuesday. Charlie Morton and Tyler Glasnow will follow Snell in the pitching schedule.
Sep 18 2020Snell didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Orioles, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw was in line for his fifth win of the season in an eventual 3-1 victory, but after he exited the game with a runner on second and one out, Diego Castillo proceeded to blow the save by allowing the inherited runner to score. Snell tossed 73 pitches 47 strikes) in the strong outing, and he'll carry a 3.05 ERA and 54:15 K:BB through 44.1 innings into potentially his final start of the regular season Tuesday, on the road against the Mets.
Sep 16 2020Snell will start Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader in Baltimore, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He is coming off one of his two best starts of the season, where he tossed 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out five and picking up the win against Boston. Baltimore ranks 15th in the majors with a 102 wRC+ against southpaws, so it's a neutral matchup in a hitter-friendly ballpark.
Sep 11 2020Snell (4-1) fired 5.1 scoreless innings Friday as he earned the win against the Red Sox. He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was charged with his first loss of the year in his last outing, but he bounced back with a sharp performance against Boston. It was the southpaw's first scoreless appearance in nearly a month as he now carries a 3.23 ERA and 50:14 K:BB over 39 innings this season. His next start should be in Baltimore on Thursday.
Sep 6 2020Snell (3-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out eight across five innings to take the loss against Miami on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was cruising until he found himself in a bit of a jam in the fourth inning with men on second and third and nobody out. He struck out the next batter, but the runner on third was able to score after Michael Perez had trouble blocking the pitch, leading to a passed ball and the first run of the game for the Marlins. Snell then allowed a second runner to score on an infield single before Corey Dickerson took him yard to make the score 4-0. The southpaw came back out for the fifth and gave up another run due to more fielding errors by his team but was able to finish the inning while limiting the damage. Snell has yet to record a quality start in eight attempts this season but owns a 3.74 ERA and an impressive 45:12 K:BB across 33.2 innings and is set to take the mound Friday in a favorable matchup with the Red Sox.
Aug 30 2020Snell (3-0) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings as he earned the win Sunday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell was forced to take a no-decision in his last start despite striking out nine, but he returned to the win column against the Marlins. The southpaw now feels as though he's completely recovered from the shoulder issue that bothered him during spring training, and his results have backed up that claim. He now sports a 3.14 ERA and 37:9 K:BB over 28.2 innings during seven starts this season. His next start should come at home Saturday against Miami.
Aug 24 2020Snell allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over 5.2 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell surrendered one run in the third on a double and another in the sixth on a solo blast before being exiting the contest with a one-run lead. Toronto would put up runs in the seventh and ninth to bring home the victory, resulting in a no-decision for the southpaw. Despite this, it was positive to see Snell rack up nine strikeouts after fanning just three in his last outing Tuesday in New York. Through six starts this season, he owns a 3.04 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 32 punchouts across 23.2 innings.
Aug 23 2020Snell, who was able to reach the 90-pitch threshold in his last start against the Yankees on Tuesday, feels like he's now completely over the shoulder issue that plagued him during the spring, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. "I'm a starting pitcher now," Snell said "That's two starts where I've gotten to five innings. I'm not an opener. Can't call me that. So definitely excited about that." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander's tongue-in-cheek comment stems from the fact he went no longer than three innings in any of his first three starts of the campaign, as manager Kevin Cash and his staff were carefully managing Snell's pitch count. However, as he demonstrated in his most recent turn, Snell's arm appears to be back to being able to handle very close to a normal workload. It's been somewhat of an up-and-down season thus far for the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner, who's posted three scoreless efforts but also allowed three earned runs apiece in his other two starts.
Aug 18 2020Snell (2-0) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings in a 6-3 victory over the Yankees. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Two of the hits off Snell left the yard, accounting for all the damage off the southpaw, but the Rays matched the Yankees homer for homer. Snell has yet to last longer than five innings in a start this season, but he's won both of the outings in which he reached that minimum mark. He'll look for his third straight win when he next takes the mound Sunday, at home against the Jays.
Aug 12 2020Snell (1-0) allowed four hits over five scoreless innings in a win over the Red Sox on Wednesday. He struck out six and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty said that he intended to go five for the first time this season and did just that on 70 pitches. Snell established a new season high in strikeouts and it's great to see a zero in a walk column, especially after Snell walked batters at an 11.1 percent clip last season around a few injuries. Tampa Bay has been deliberate in building Snell up and it may be a couple starts yet before he's available for a traditional starter's workload. He will need to maximize his efficiency once again next week against the Yankees and Blue Jays.
Aug 7 2020Snell fired three scoreless innings in Friday's win against the Yankees but didn't factor into the decision. He allowed no hits and two walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though Snell didn't allow any hits or runs Friday, he struggled a bit with his command as only 32 of his 59 pitches went for strikes. The southpaw had hoped to throw 4-to-5 innings Friday, but he was only able to last three innings as a result of his struggles to throw strikes. Snell has a 3.38 ERA and 14:4 K:BB over eight innings across his first three starts in 2020. He'll attempt to qualify for his first win on the road Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Aug 5 2020Snell is hoping to pitch 4-to-5 innings Friday against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has pitched just five innings through two starts this season as the Rays slowly extend his workload, but after pitching into the fourth inning during his last outing, it sounds like the lefty could pitch long enough to qualify for his first win Friday. Through two appearances, Snell has allowed three runs while striking out nine batters in five innings.
Jul 31 2020Snell didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Orioles, allowing three runs on four hits over three-plus innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He appeared to be in complete control for three scoreless frames, but a Renato Nunez double and homers by Anthony Santander and Pedro Severino in the fourth brought Snell's night to an abrupt end. The southpaw threw 53 pitches (37 strikes) as the Rays slowly extend his workload, but barring a big jump in his pitch count, Snell doesn't appear close to being a consistent threat to last the five innings necessary to qualify for a win. His next outing is scheduled for Thursday, at home against the Yankees.
Jul 26 2020Snell allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five across two scoreless innings Sunday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell punched out the first two batters he faced, using a heavy dose of fastballs. However, he also struggled to place his pitches, beginning only four of the 11 batters he faced with a strike. Though Snell's first start of the campaign was scheduled to be short, he did not work efficiently, allowing him to retire only six batters. He'll look to improve on his command and the length of his outing in his next start, currently projected for Friday at the Orioles.
Jul 24 2020Snell will start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell wasn't very effective in his final tuneup during an intrasquad game Monday, but he'll take the mound Sunday for the Rays' third game of the season. Despite the southpaw's struggles Monday, he isn't expected to have any workload restrictions in his first regular season start. After winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2018, Snell underwent elbow surgery last season as he posted a 4.29 ERA and 147:40 K:BB over 107 innings across 23 starts.
Jul 21 2020Snell faced 10 batters in Monday's intrasquad game and allowed four walks and two hits while bouncing several pitches in the dirt, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander threw a total of 47 pitches, but Topkin reports at least five of those failed to make it into the catcher's mitt on the fly. Snell chastised himself after the outing for not trusting his fastball sufficiently and attacking hitters, but manager Kevin Cash gave the 27-year-old somewhat of a pass by highlighting that the workload restrictions of the last few months likely led to the lack of sharpness and location. Snell lines up to start against the Blue Jays either Sunday or Monday for his first turn of the regular season.
Jul 19 2020Snell lines up to start either Sunday at home against the Blue Jays or Monday against the Braves, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Charlie Morton and Ryan Yarbrough have been announced as the official starters Friday and Saturday, respectively, and with Snell set to pitch in Tuesday's intrasquad game, it seems likely he will take the ball for the finale of the opening series. If the Rays opt to give Snell an extra day's rest, he would get a two-start week against the Braves and then in Baltimore.
Jul 8 2020Snell threw 23 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday, his first time facing hitters since March, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell reported no issues with the elbow problems that once plagued him, and he was able to get 14 of his 23 offerings into the strike zone against the quartet of Yandy Diaz, Joey Wendle, Michael Perez and Daniel Robertson. Snell stated he'd already been feeling back to normal after throwing for the last week and a half, emphasizing that he'll "continue to feel better" with the additional work he plans on putting in before Opening Day.
Jul 2 2020Snell is considered a 'full-go" for the Rays' summer camp at Tropicana Field that begins Friday, and he shouldn't have any workload restrictions during the regular season, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was due to be monitored carefully this coming season because of last summer's elbow problems. However, the 60-game season will yield a much lighter workload than originally expected, meaning Snell should essentially be deployed without restrictions with respect to the cumulative amount of innings he logs. Snell has been working out on his own in his Seattle-area home during the shutdown of spring training, and his current conditioning will be evaluated by pitching coach Kyle Snyder on Friday.
Jun 25 2020Snell was slated to be back in his St. Petersburg home Thursday after spending the last several weeks in the Seattle area, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The numerous Rays players that were scattered about the globe are naturally beginning to formulate their plans to return to the Tampa area following the finalization of the details of a truncated 2020 regular season. Snell has been busy working a throwing program in his Seattle home in recent weeks, and it appears he'll now have several days to immerse himself back into the team environment ahead of the ramp-up to the campaign. It remains to be seen how manager Kevin Cash will handle his starters' workloads the first couple turns through the rotation, with that expected to be sorted out during the team's upcoming summer camp.
Jun 12 2020Snell threw 15 fastballs during a bullpen session Friday, marking the first time he's thrown off a mound since mid-March, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There's no word of a snag with Snell's session, so his throwing program seems to be going on without a hitch. Barring a setback of some kind, Snell should be available for the start of the 2020 season, when or if it commences.
Jun 5 2020Snell is throwing 4-to-5 times per week while spring training is suspended and will begin throwing off a mound next week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has continued to throw since play was suspended, but he recently increased his throwing program ahead of a potential return. His return to mound throwing will mark the first time that he's thrown off a mound since spring training, but it appears as though the southpaw is fully healthy despite suffering a left elbow injury in late February.
Apr 21 2020Snell continues to throw three times per week at his St. Petersburg home while spring training remains suspended, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander's ability to continue playing catch without issue supports the notion his previously ailing elbow is back to full health. A more stringent test will come once Snell is able to jump back into game action again, however, and for the moment, the timeline for being able to do so remains firmly up in the air.
Mar 23 2020Snell indicated that he was satisfied with the health of his left elbow before spring training was suspended, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. He's confident that he'll be ready to pitch without any restrictions once the season resumes. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Prior to the MLB-mandated shutdown, Snell had been cleared to pitch in a simulated game after a cortisone shot alleviated the discomfort he had been experiencing in his elbow. Had the season started on time, Snell may have had to skip his first turn through the rotation while he built up his arm for starting duty, but now that the MLB hiatus is set to last until at least mid-May, he should be ready to go for Tampa Bay's opening series. While Snell is ostensibly healthy and should benefit from the extended break, it's not the most reassuring sign that his elbow was already barking again this spring after he had it scoped last July.
Mar 11 2020Snell played catch without any elbow issues Wednesday and is expected to pitch a simulated game Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old southpaw was originally expected to start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, but it's encouraging that the change of plans is unrelated to his elbow. Snell is coming off a disappointing outing Monday against the Blue Jays which included four walks, four earned runs and just a single out. Tampa Bay is choosing to take a conservative approach to bringing its No. 2 starter back from a Feb. 29 cortisone shot, which should be encouraging to 2020 fantasy owners in the long run this season.
Mar 9 2020Snell felt great following his outing Monday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell wasn't at all happy with his performance, which included four walks and four earned runs and just a single out. The important thing, though, is that he felt no pain in his elbow following the game. Assuming that remains the case for the rest of spring, Snell should be fine for Opening Day.
Mar 7 2020Snell (elbow) has been confirmed as Monday's starter against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell received a cortisone shot last week to help him deal with pain in his elbow and has successfully thrown a bullpen session and is now confirmed to return to game action. He still carries more risk than the typical starting pitcher due to this elbow scare, but it sounds like fantasy managers can proceed with the expectation that Snell will be ready for the start of the season.
Mar 6 2020Snell (elbow) felt good after a 20-pitch bullpen session Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell required a cortisone shot in his elbow last week, fueling fears that he could be out for the start of the regular season. The Rays played down those concerns, noting that the shot was on the outside of the lefty's elbow rather than near the tendon, which would be more worrisome. Assuming he still feels good Saturday, Snell could get back into game action as soon as Monday.
Mar 3 2020Snell (elbow) said he's on track to throw a bullpen session Friday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The cortisone shot Snell received last week for his left elbow appears to have had the desired effect, as the 27-year-old was able to play catch from 60 feet Tuesday without discomfort. He plans to increase his flat-ground distance to 90 feet Wednesday before getting back on the mound Friday. Assuming he gets through the bullpen session without incident, Snell could be cleared to face live hitters early next week.
Mar 2 2020Snell (elbow) was "feeling good" Monday and is still on track to play catch Tuesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell received a cortisone shot in his elbow Friday after feeling some discomfort after his start Wednesday, but he appears to be on track in his recovery. The southpaw is expected to play catch Tuesday and throw a bullpen session Friday, so he'll have several chances to test the elbow over the next few days. A clearer picture for his return could become more apparent after he resumes throwing.
Feb 29 2020Snell felt some discomfort in his elbow after Wednesday's start and received a cortisone shot Friday, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays are reportedly not overly concerned, and Snell is already scheduled to play catch Tuesday and throw a bullpen session Friday, so he won't be shut down for long. Manager Kevin Cash noted that the shot was in the lefty's outer elbow, not near the tendon, which would be a considerably more concerning area. Still, it's hard not to worry about elbow issues popping up early in camp for a pitcher who missed two months for elbow surgery last season. Whether or not Snell is expected to miss time at the start of the regular season should become clear over the next week as he resumes throwing.
Feb 27 2020Snell started Wednesday's Grapefruit League loss to the Twins, firing a perfect first inning during which he recorded a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw threw 21 pitches overall, 15 of which found the strike zone. As per Juan Toribio of MLB.com, Snell utilized all four of his pitches but expressed frustration after the game that he didn't throw a slider against a right-handed hitter, which is an area he's stated he'd like to focus on this spring. Snell made several changes this offseason that appear to be paying early dividends, hiring a personal chef to improve his diet, getting additional rest, and arriving in St. Petersburg almost a month earlier than usual to prepare for the season.
Feb 20 2020Snell featured a revamped slider during his first live batting practice Thursday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. "He looked awesome; he looked really good," said Rays manager Kevin Cash. "I think he put some weight in his lower half to get stronger and it looked pretty easy today." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander is fully healthy and looking like it, impressing during the 30 pitches he threw to Ji-Man Choi, Randy Arozarena and Willy Adames. Snell used all four of his pitches Thursday, but eight of his offerings were sliders. Notably, Snell threw the pitch just 6.7 percent of the time in 2019; however, the 27-year-old is focusing on refining the slider this spring after he generated an impressive .208 xBA when deploying it last season, and he plans to utilize it as a way of making his changeup and fastball more effective in the coming campaign.
Oct 2 2019Snell is expected to start Game 2 of the ALDS on Saturday at Houston, Janie McCauley of the Associated Press reports.
Oct 2 2019Snell is expected to start Game 2 of the ALDS on Saturday at Houston, Janie McCauley of the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Charlie Morton provided five scoreless innings during Wednesday's Wild Card Game and Tyler Glasnow will start the series opener, leaving Snell to take the ball for Game 2. The 26-year-old had an up-and-down season and allowed three runs over six innings after returning from the injured list in mid-September. Snell reached 62 pitches in his last appearance and seems likely to remain on an slightly higher pitch count Saturday.
Sep 29 2019Snell (6-8) gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four through 2.1 innings to take the loss against the Blue Jays on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell allowed both runs in the first frame, but he recovered to deliver 1.1 scoreless innings before his exit after 62 pitches. Snell continued to be limited in his pitch count, technically throwing his longest outing since his return from the injured list. The 26-year-old finishes the regular season with a 4.29 ERA with 147 strikeouts through 107 innings.
Sep 23 2019Snell allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out three through 1.2 innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell struggled with his command, allowing three free passes before being pulled in the second inning after allowing a run on a double. The Rays are still easing Snell back into his usual workload, and he was not expected to pitch more than a few innings. The 26-year-old has a 4.21 ERA with 143 strikeouts through 22 starts this season. Snell is scheduled to make his next start Sunday against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
Sep 21 2019Snell will start Monday's game against the Red Sox and is expected to cover around 3-to-4 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays are still easing Snell into a normal starter's workload after he returned from the injured list Tuesday following a nearly two-month absence while he was on the mend from arthroscopic elbow surgery. Snell's first outing back from the IL was encouraging, as he kept a quality Dodgers offense off the board while hurling two perfect innings and striking out four. Tampa Bay hasn't announced that a primary pitcher will be used behind Snell on Monday, so expect the team to lean on a slew of relievers to finish out the contest once the southpaw departs.
Sep 19 2019Snell's arm felt good following Tuesday's two-inning start against the Dodgers, leaving him on track for Monday's turn against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell rattled off two perfect innings in his first game back after being sidelined nearly two months due to arthroscopic elbow surgery. He'll need to get through a catch session Thursday and a bullpen Saturday without setbacks before locking in his next appearance, but the fact his arm was in good shape a day after he consistently hit the mid-90s on the radar gun certainly bodes well.
Sep 18 2019Snell did not factor into the decision against the Dodgers on Tuesday, pitching two perfect innings and striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell showed little rust from his nearly two-month absence, tossing 17 of 26 pitches for strikes and whiffing four of the six batters he faced. The abbreviated outing was a positive step for the southpaw as he looks to build stamina in anticipation of a possible Tampa Bay playoff run. The 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner has posted a 4.19 ERA and 1.22 WHIP along with a 6-7 record in 21 starts this season. He'll likely be on a short leash again when he squares off against the Red Sox on Monday.
Sep 17 2019Snell (elbow) was activated ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Dodgers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell has been out since late July while recovering from arthroscopic elbow surgery. He hasn't been able to build up to a full starter's workload yet, but he's expected to throw around three innings Tuesday.
Sep 13 2019Snell (elbow) is expected to start Tuesday's game against the Dodgers, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell isn't quite stretched out all the way yet, but he's on track to throw around three innings Tuesday, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He's been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic elbow surgery at the end of July.
Sep 10 2019Snell (elbow) is scheduled to throw two innings or 30 pitches Thursday for Triple-A Durham, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Snell looked shaky through two-thirds of an inning for Durham on Saturday, giving up a run on two hits and two walks, but he'll extend out to 30 pitches Thursday. This may be his last chance for action at Triple-A, depending on how long the Bulls' playoff run lasts.
Sep 8 2019Snell (elbow) allowed an earned run on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning while also recording two strikeouts in Triple-A Durham's win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As his final line indicates, Snell struggled with his control while getting just 12 of his 24 pitches into the strike zone. The rehabbing southpaw did hit his pregame pitch-count mark, while Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that Snell consistently hit 94-96 mph with his fastball. It remains to be seen if Snell will have another chance to make an appearance before the Bulls' playoff run concludes, but Topkin reports he is slated for another outing in the coming week.
Sep 2 2019Snell (elbow) threw 18 pitches during his second bullpen session Sunday, the Associated Press reports.

Jul 23 2018Snell was placed on the 10-day DL retroactive to Friday due to left shoulder fatigue. He underwent an MRI on Monday morning, which showed no structural damage, so he's only expected to miss one start, Juan Toribio of The Athletic reports.Snell will be eligible to return against the Angels on July 31. The left-hander was only able to last three innings during a rough start in Minnesota prior to the break, and he pitched 1.2 innings in the All-Star Game, so it's unclear as to when he began feeling the impact of this injury. The Rays have yet to name a starter in his place for Tuesday's game versus the Yankees, though Chih-Wei Hu was called up from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move. Look for Snell to return from the shelf next week.
Jul 12 2018Snell (12-5) allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two across three innings to take the loss Thursday against the Twins.Snell suffered his shortest outing of the season -- he has two other starts this season in which he lasted only 3.1 innings -- marking the first time since May 13 that he failed to pitch at least five innings. Control was his downfall, as he walked three batters -- one of which came around to score -- and threw a wild pitch moving another runner into scoring position in the third inning. His velocity was in line with his season-long norms so this start can be chalked up as an outlier, though it does highlight the risk that Snell presents on a game-to-game basis due to his continued issues with control.
Jul 7 2018Snell (12-4) allowed six hits and three walks while striking out nine across 7.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against the Mets.Snell generated an impressive 16 swinging strikes and stayed out of trouble by also generating 10 groundball outs. While the Mets struggle mightily against southpaws, Snell has been particularly dominant in his last three starts, striking out 29 batters across 21.2 innings. That's only added to his impressive breakout campaign as he ranks among the American League leaders in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and WHIP.
Jul 1 2018Snell (11-4) allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 10 across 7.1 innings Sunday as he picked up the win over the Astros.Snell's lone earned run came on a Evan Gattis solo homer in the seventh inning to give Houston a 1-0 lead, but the Rays would strike for two in the bottom half of the inning, setting Snell up for the victory. In 18 starts this season, Snell sits with an outstanding 2.24 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with a 123:41 K:BB through 108.2 innings. His next outing figures to come Saturday against the Mets.
Jun 27 2018Snell, who's now 10-4 with a 2.31 ERA through 17 starts, attributes a lot of his improvement to an adjustment he made to his foot placement on the pitching rubber late last season, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports.Snell was lining up on the third-base side of the rubber for the first 14 starts of 2017, a stretch during which he generated a 4.98 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 5.1 BB/9. The young left-hander subsequently adjusted his positioning to the middle of the rubber, and the improvement in his control and overall performance was evident. The aforementioned figures dropped to 2.84, 1.02 and 3.1, respectively, over his last 10 starts of 2017, and he's been similarly impressive throughout the majority of this season. Moreover, Snell also boasts a 28.1 percent strikeout rate and 13.5 percent swinging strike rate in 2018, both career highs.
Jun 26 2018Snell (10-4) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Monday against the Nationals, striking out 10 while allowing one hit and four walks.Snell was extremely effective against one of the toughest lineups in baseball, inducing a whopping 23 swinging strikes while recording seven groundball outs in this gem of an outing. He actually walked the first two batters he faced, but he buckled down and coasted the rest of the way off a large early lead. Though Snell has been outstanding of late, he's now walked 15 batters across 19 innings over his last three starts and will need to curtail the free passes to sustain this type of success. He'll look to do just that as he face a tough Astros lineup this weekend.
Jun 19 2018Snell (9-4) got the win Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and seven walks while striking out six over seven innings against the Astros.Snell wasn't at his sharpest with a season-high seven walks and only just over half of his pitches going for strikes (57 of 102), but he allowed just three singles and was helped out by his defense with a couple of double plays and another out on the basepaths when Alex Bregman attempted to stretch a single into a double. The lefty's nine wins trail only Corey Kluber and Luis Severino in the AL, and he now sports a sterling 2.48 ERA. He's struggled with command a bit of late with 15:13 K:BB in 18 innings over his last three starts, but on the year he's now at 9.8 K/9. Next up is a home date with the Nationals on Monday.
Jun 14 2018Snell (8-4) pitched five innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out eight in a 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Thursday.Snell had won his last four decisions heading in to this tough matchup, last taking a loss on May 13 against Baltimore. That was also the last time he allowed more than two earned runs. Even with the rough outing, the 25-year-old lefty has a stellar 2.58 ERA across 87.1 innings with a 97:29 K:BB ratio. However, things won't get any easier for Snell, as his next start is slated to be against the Astros.
Jun 9 2018Snell (8-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out one across six innings to earn the win Saturday against the Mariners.Known for his ability to generate strikeouts, this was an unconventional start for Snell, though he still turned in an effective effort. The greater number of balls in play did result in him surrendering a season-high seven hits, though he limited the damage they caused by allowing only two extra-base hits. He continues to rank among the best pitchers in the American League, and certainly appears to be in the midst of a breakout season.
Jun 3 2018Snell didn't factor into the decision against the Mariners on Sunday, despite a brilliant outing that saw him give up just two hits and strike out 12 without a walk over six innings as the Rays eventually fell 2-1.Snell was overpowering from the get-go in this contest, as he tied an American League record by striking out the first seven hitters of the game on his way to his second double-digit strikeout effort of the season. This was an especially impressive outing, and he was unfortunate not to get rewarded with a victory, but Snell has really been brilliant all season, as he's now sporting a 2.36 ERA and a sparkling 0.94 WHIP through 76.1 innings. With 13 starts now under his belt in 2018, and the calendar now flipped to June, it's getting to the point where it might be time to start fully acknowledging this as Snell's breakout campaign.
May 30 2018Snell (7-3) got the win Tuesday, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits and two walks while striking out seven over 5.2 innings against the Athletics.Snell finished just an out shy of a quality start, as he had already reached 97 pitches and allowed a runner to third following a hit and wild pitch. The lefty was otherwise sharp once again Tuesday, notching his AL-leading seventh win while improving to 9.7 K/9. As one of the only reliable arms in the Tampa starting rotation, the lefty boasts an impressive 2.56 ERA and 1.00 WHIP heading into his next start Sunday against the Mariners.
May 24 2018Snell (6-3) got the win against the Red Sox on Thursday, yielding no earned runs on three hits over six strong innings, striking out eight and walking two as Tampa Bay eventually bagged a 6-3 victory.Snell kept his strong start to the season rolling, nabbing his sixth victory of the campaign and lowering his ERA to 2.78 by shutting down a tough Red Sox lineup. Time will tell if he can keep putting up numbers like this considering he averaged a 3.79 ERA over his 218.1 career big-league innings coming into 2018, but Snell also has a 1.02 WHIP and a 61:19 K:BB over his 58.2 innings, so this hot start is certainly looking like the real deal in the early going.
May 19 2018Snell (5-3) got the win against the Angels on Friday, giving up just two earned runs on four hits over 6.2 innings, striking out eight and walking three in the Rays' 8-3 victory.Snell got blown up by the Orioles for five earned runs in just 3.1 innings in his last start but he was able to bounce back with a solid effort against the Angels that was much more representative of how he's pitched this season. The 25-year-old left-hander is in the midst of a standout start to the 2018 campaign that has seen him log a 3.07 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP to go along with 61 strikeouts over 58.2 innings, all while holding opponents to a minuscule .199 batting average.
May 13 2018Snell, who took his third loss against the Orioles on Sunday, is dealing with a sore right hip, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The revelation came in manager Kevin Cash's postgame press conference Sunday, following a forgettable outing in which Snell allowed five earned runs on six hits over 3.1 innings against the Orioles. Cash made sure to emphasize it was a "minor, minor injury" and confirmed it wouldn't keep Snell from his next scheduled start on Friday. However, he also conceded the discomfort was the primary reason why he opted to pull Snell after only 73 pitches, acknowledging he didn't think the young southpaw "looked quite like himself."
May 13 2018Snell (4-3) took the loss against the Orioles on Sunday, giving up five earned runs on six hits, striking out three and walking two before exiting after 3.1 innings as the Rays got trounced 17-1 by Baltimore.Snell had been putting up fantastic numbers coming into this contest but he and his bullpen were lit up by the Orioles in this contest to the tune of 17 earned runs on 19 hits. He's still got a 3.12 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP through 52 innings, so hopefully this was an outlier on what has otherwise been a strong start to the season. He'll look to get back on track in a road start against the Angels on Friday.
May 9 2018Snell (4-2) allowed one run on four hits and two walks across 6.1 innings while taking the loss Tuesday against the Braves. He struck out five.Snell threw first-pitch strikes to 16 of 25 batters and induced 13 swinging strikes as he kept the Atlanta lineup off balance for most of the night. His only real mistake came on a solo home run from Ronald Acuna in the third inning, but due to a lack of run support he suffered his first loss since Apr. 4. The left-hander has been outstanding over his last six starts, allowing two runs or fewer in each while posting a 43:9 K:BB during that span. He'll take a 2.40 ERA into Sunday's scheduled start against Baltimore.
May 2 2018Snell did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four over 6.2 innings in the 12-inning loss to the Tigers.Snell allowed a game-tying solo home run to the final batter he faced with two outs in the seventh inning, otherwise he likely could've gone even deeper as he needed just 86 pitches (57 strikes). The lefty didn't induce many strikeouts in this one after fanning at least nine in three of his past four starts, but the effort was still good for his fifth straight quality start. He'll carry impressive ratios with a 2.55 ERA and 0.94 WHIP into his next start against the Braves next Wednesday.
Apr 27 2018Snell (4-1) picked up the win over the Red Sox on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over 7.1 innings while striking out nine.It was the first time in the left-hander's big-league career that he's pitched into the eighth inning, as Snell threw 68 of 104 pitches for strikes and generated 17 swinging strikes in the impressive performance. The 25-year-old has now produced four straight quality starts, and he'll take a 2.52 ERA into his next outing Wednesday in Detroit.
Apr 24 2018Snell won't start Thursday's game against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. With Tuesday's game against the Orioles being postponed, the Rays decided to move their rotation back a day. As a result, Chris Archer will start instead of Snell for Thursday's series finale versus Tampa Bay. This is a tough draw for Snell, as his next scheduled start will now come Friday against the high-powered Red Sox if the Rays stay in rotation.
Apr 21 2018Snell (3-1) picked up the win over the Twins on Saturday, giving up one run on five hits over seven innings while striking out six.Brian Dozier led off the game with a double and came around to score on Miguel Sano's sac fly, and that was all the offense the Twins could muster against Snell on the night. The left-hander fired 68 of 100 pitches for strikes en route to his third straight win and, perhaps more impressively given the control issues he's dealt with in his career, his second straight start without walking a batter. Snell will try to keep rolling in his next start Thursday in Baltimore.
Apr 16 2018Snell (2-1) got the win over the Rangers on Monday, giving up just one earned run on five hits in 6.1 innings, striking out nine and walking none in Tampa Bay's 8-4 victory. It was the second straight strong outing for the 25-year-old left-hander, who has given up just two earned runs to go along with 19 strikeouts over his past 12.1 innings. He also showed improved control in this start as he didn't issue a single walk against Texas after surrendering five free passes to the White Sox in his last start. Aside from one dud outing against the Yankees in his second start of the year, the early-season returns have been strong from Snell, who now sports a solid 2.95 ERA and 1.08 WHIP to go along with 26 punch-outs in 21.1 innings - numbers that would make him a rock-solid fantasy option if he's able to maintain the pace.
Apr 10 2018Snell (1-1) allowed one run on one hit and five walks over six innings in Tuesday's victory over the White Sox.Although Snell's control was questionable, as he issued five walks Tuesday, the southpaw had an otherwise great outing as he fanned 10 batters. Over his previous two games, Snell had struck out just seven batters over a combined nine innings. After making three starts, Snell owns a respectable 3.60 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. His next start projects to be Sunday when the Rays host the Phillies.
Apr 4 2018Snell (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on four hits and three walks across 3.1 innings Wednesday against the Yankees. He struck out five.Snell was never able to find his footing Wednesday, and the Yankees' potent lineup made him pay. After allowing a leadoff single to Brett Gardner, Snell served up a mammoth two-run homer to Giancarlo Stanton two batters later. Snell allowed another two-run shot in the third inning -- this one to Gary Sanchez -- before ultimately getting yanked after recording just 10 outs on 90 pitches. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, which is set for Tuesday in what should be a more favorable matchup against the White Sox.
Mar 30 2018Snell tossed 5.2 scoreless innings Friday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three but coming away with a no-decision in a 1-0 loss to the Red Sox.The young lefty matched David Price goose egg for goose egg, but after throwing 84 pitches, Snell got lifted for Chaz Roe who promptly gave up the game's only run. After an impressive spring that saw him post a 27:5 K:BB in 17,1 innings, Snell wound up on plenty of sleeper lists heading into 2018, and at least through one start he's done nothing to dampen that enthusiasm. He'll get a rematch with Price and the Red Sox in Boston on Thursday.
Mar 25 2018Snell, who racked up eight strikeouts and allowed four earned runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in his final spring start Saturday against the Pirates, earned high marks from manager Kevin Cash for his overall spring performance, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. "He's in a good mindset," Cash said. "He's excited for the season. He could not have had a better spring from a work standpoint, and just an overall effort."The lefty's spring could be considered an extension of his strong finish to 2017, when he went 5-1 with a 2.84 ERA over his final 10 starts. Snell generated a similarly solid 3.12 ERA over five spring turns, and in addition to having the opportunity to refine mechanical issues like location during the exhibition slate, he feels his improved intangibles place him on the precipice of a stellar campaign as much as anything else. "Last year to this year is completely different," Snell said. "Just mindset wise. And where I stand right now, it's way different. I think everyone can tell. Just focus. Ready to go. Been waiting for this season a long time, so definitely excited that it's here now."
Mar 20 2018Snell compiled nine strikeouts and allowed an earned run on three hits and three walks over 4.2 innings in Monday's 4-2 Grapefruit League win over the Yankees.Snell's dominant spring may have reached its apex against a loaded Yankees lineup, with his nine whiffs easily a high-water mark across his four starts. The promising lefty has recorded less than four strikeouts only once in his appearances, and he encouragingly was just one out shy of upping his workload by two innings over his previous start. He did have some issues finding the strike zone Monday, but he's nevertheless flashed improved location overall during the exhibition slate. Snell's impressive showing thus far -- which includes a 1.54 ERA and 19 punch-outs over 11.2 innings -- is a byproduct of the attitude makeover he came into spring training with, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. "He's really grown up from maybe some of his struggles last year," manager Kevin Cash said. "But he's come in with a new and different mindset. Very focused. Very committed. You can watch his tempo on the mound when he's pitched, and it's translated into positive results."
Mar 13 2018Snell racked up eight strikeouts over 4.1 innings in an intrasquad game Monday, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. "I saw Blake pitch [Monday], he continues to look really good," manager Kevin Cash said. "...It's tough to get pumped up in those situations, but he definitely did. He looked very crisp. Everybody commented, just how the ball was coming out."The emerging southpaw allowed a run on two hits and just one walk, with the latter number a particularly relevant one given Snell's ongoing focus on improving location. The 25-year-old has posted an impressive 10:1 K:BB across seven innings through three spring starts, encouraging numbers considering he generated BB/9 metrics of 5.2 and 4.1 through his first pair of regular-season major-league stints.
Mar 8 2018Snell fired three scoreless innings in Thursday's 7-2 Grapefruit League loss to the Orioles, allowing two hits and compiling four strikeouts. That's three impressive outings for Snell to open spring, as he's now allowed just one earned run over seven innings while racking up 10 strikeouts. Just as important, he's issued only one free pass, an encouraging development considering location was a significant problem for the young left-hander at the big-league level last season (51 walks and 4.11 BB/9 over 129.3 innings). Slated to be part of the Rays' four-man starting rotation in 2018, Snell's fantasy value would see a nice spike were he to exhibit the level of improved control he's flashed thus far once the regular season commences.
Feb 20 2018Snell is expected to be a part of the Rays' four-man Opening Day rotation, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports.Early off-days will allow the team to go with four starters to open the season, with Matt Andriese ticketed for the bullpen and top prospect Brent Honeywell likely headed back to Triple-A Durham. Snell came on strong down the stretch last season and manager Kevin Cash has raved about how Snell has looked early in camp, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, so the lefty could be as high as No. 2 in the rotation to start the campaign. There is a lot to dream on with Snell, and perhaps best of all, his price in drafts and auctions is still reasonable.
Oct 1 2017Snell (5-7) struck out a career-high 13 while allowing just two hits without a walk over seven shutout innings to beat the Orioles in Sunday's season finale.Between Snell, Brad Boxberger and Chaz Roe, Tampa Bay's pitchers posted an 18:0 K:BB in a 6-0 win over a Baltimore team that looked like it couldn't wait for the season to end. The 24-year-old lefty finished strong, notching a 5-1 record over his final 10 outings while logging six quality starts in that stretch. He'll be a pivotal part of the rotation next year after finishing 2017 with a 4.04 ERA in 24 starts.
Sep 26 2017Snell (4-7) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks across one inning while taking the loss Tuesday against the Yankees. He struck out one.Snell tossed a scoreless first inning, but he endured a miserable second in which he was pulled with nobody out after allowing the first six men to reach. The bullpen finished the frame, but not before four runs were hung on the lefty's ledger. This poor start came on the heels of perhaps Snell's best outing of the season, and he will look to finish on a strong note Sunday against the Orioles.
Sep 21 2017Snell (4-6) pitched seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts to take the win against the Cubs on Wednesday.Snell entered Wednesday's game with a respectable 3.75 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 7.9 K/9 through 11 second-half starts, and he has now allowed three runs or fewer in 10 of his 12 outings since the All-Star break. It's been a solid turn around for the 24-year-old southpaw, and his fantasy value is on the rise heading into the 2018 campaign. Snell lines up for a road start against the Yankees and a home date against the Orioles to end the season.
Sep 12 2017Snell didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Yankees, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over five innings while striking out five. The left-hander threw 51 of 83 pitches for strikes, but didn't stick around long enough to benefit from Adeiny Hechavarria's game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning. Snell has now given up two runs or fewer in four of his last five outings, posting a 2.73 ERA and 28:8 K:BB in 29.2 innings over that stretch. He'll take the mound again next Tuesday at home against the Cubs.
Sep 6 2017Snell allowed six runs on seven hits -- including two homers -- over four innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Wednesday. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk. The 7:0 K:BB looks good, but Snell was living in the strike zone a bit too much in this one, and Brian Dozier and Ehire Adrianza made him pay with a pair of long balls. He has a respectable 3.92 ERA since the All-Star break even after Wednesday's slip-up, but Snell is still figuring it out at the big-league level and more ups and downs should be expected as he continues along the major-league learning curve. Snell lines up to face the Yankees in his next scheduled start.
Sep 2 2017Snell, who allowed just one unearned run on six hits and a walk over 6.2 innings while picking up his third win Friday versus the White Sox, is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA over 33 innings in his five starts since being recalled from Triple-A Durham on Aug. 8.The promising lefty's impressive body of work since his promotion also includes a .193 BAA, 0.97 WHIP and .251 wOBA allowed. However, one of the most important metrics is Snell's 2.5 BB/9, which, while still in need of improvement, reflects significant progress from the 5.1 figure he'd generated in 72.1 innings before his current big-league stint. Snell's control has been the biggest hindrance to him developing consistency against major-league hitters, but he's certainly providing reason for cautious optimism at the moment.
Aug 26 2017Snell allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven over seven innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday. The left-hander left in line for the win after his second straight "ultra quality start" -- at least seven innings and two runs or fewer allowed -- but Tommy Hunter and Brad Boxberger combined to blow the lead and take the loss. Snell's season numbers are still unsightly, but he appears to have figured some things out as he now has a 3.66 ERA in the second half. He lines up to face the White Sox in his next start.
Aug 20 2017Snell (2-6) threw seven shutout innings and struck out eight batters in Sunday's victory over the Mariners. After failing to pick up a win over his first 14 starts of the season, Snell has now won two straight games. He was dialed in Sunday, and held Seattle to just two hits and walked only two batters. However, his numbers for the season (4.42 ERA and 1.44 WHIP) still leave much to be desired. He'll next take the mound Friday when the Rays face the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Aug 15 2017Snell (1-6) picked up the win Tuesday against the Blue Jays, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings while striking out four. It's been a fairly rough second half for the left-hander, who's given up a home run and at least three earned runs in five of six starts since the All-Star break, Snell will take a 4.78 ERA into his next outing Sunday at home against the Mariners.
Aug 10 2017Snell allowed a single run on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters through 6.1 innings during Thursday's win over Cleveland. He didn't factor into the decision.Snell was recalled from the minors for this start after Alex Cobb (toe) was placed on the disabled list, and there hasn't been a clear indication whether the 24-year-old lefty will remain in the majors or return to Triple-A Durham. Even with Thursday's solid showing, Snell is a difficult hurler to trust outside of cavernous settings. He has struggled to pitch deep into games and sports an underwhelming 4.69 ERA and 1.53 WHIP for the year.
Aug 8 2017Snell was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and is expected to start Thursday against the Indians. With Alex Cobb on the DL with turf toe, Snell was summoned back to the big club to take his next turn in the rotation. The 24-year-old compiled a 4.98 ERA and 64:41 K:BB through 14 starts (72.1 innings) with the Rays before being sent back to the minors, so he'll look to put together a better showing in what could be his only start before heading back to the minors.
Aug 4 2017Snell was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The southpaw has followed a dynamic rookie season with a disappointing 2017 campaign, in which he's racked up a 4.98 ERA over 14 starts and lasted just four innings in his last outing. Although Snell exhibited some improvement by posting a 3.80 ERA in four starts last month, the Rays appear to have lost patience and will search for alternative starters while he works things out in the minors. It's unknown as to who will take the vacant rotation spot, though Jake Odorizzi -- currently sidelined with a back injury -- may be an option.
Aug 3 2017Snell didn't factor into the decision after allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts over four-plus innings Thursday in Houston.Snell was pulled at 90 pitches after allowing each of the first three hitters in the fifth inning to reach base. The 24-year-old lefty still hasn't won a game this year and seems to have plateaued with exactly three runs allowed in each of his last four starts. His next start comes in a pivotal home matchup against the division rival Red Sox on Wednesday.
Jul 29 2017Snell allowed three earned runs over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Saturday against the Rays. He finished the day allowing six hits and two walks while notching four strikeouts. The young left-hander is still in search of his first win of the season after the Rays bullpen coughed up the lead late in Saturday's contest. Still, there were some positive takeaways for Snell in this outing as he limited damage for the most part and only surrendered two walks. However, Snell did give up a home run for the third consecutive start and his WHIP now sits at a subpar 1.55. His next start is scheduled for Thursday against the Astros in Houston, where he'll face Collin McHugh.
Jul 24 2017Snell (0-6) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four batters through seven innings during Monday's loss to Baltimore.Snell has held his own through three starts since being recalled from Triple-A Durham with just six runs allowed and 15 strikeouts through 16 innings. While he still sports an underwhelming 4.86 ERA and 1.56 WHIP for the year, the lefty owns oodles of upside and the potential to reward down the fantasy stretch drive. Snell projects to make his next start on the road against the Yankees.
Jul 19 2017Snell didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Athletics and allowed three earned runs on three hits, three walks and a wild pitch over four innings while recording six strikeouts. The six whiffs were certainly encouraging, but Snell's usual demons also made an appearance. He struggled with his control, issuing multiple free passes for the 10th time in 11 starts this season, and he prompted yet another early exit by working up to 85 pitches in just four frames. Snell had pointed to Tuesday's start as an opportunity to finally go at least six full innings for the first time this season, but it actually ended up being his shortest outing of 2017. The young left-hander will look to bounce back in his next start, which is likely to come against the Orioles next Monday.
Jul 5 2017Snell struck out five and allowed four hits and four walks through five scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. This was a nice turnaround start for Snell, who was knocked around for six runs over five innings in his first outing back from the disabled list last week. The 24-year-old was unlucky to walk away with a no-decision, seeing as he exited the game with a three-run lead before the Rays' bullpen imploded for seven runs over the next three innings. While Wednesday was definitely a step forward from his previous start, Snell still issued four free passes, bringing his BB/9 up to an unsightly 5.9 on the season. The young southpaw and his 4.85 ERA won't see another start until after the All-Star break.
Jun 28 2017Snell (0-5) surrendered six runs on four hits and five walks over five innings while striking out six in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Pirates. After seeming to get a handle on his control problems over his last few starts at Triple-A Durham, Snell returned to the majors and once again couldn't find the strike zone, throwing 56 of 98 pitches for strikes and tying his season high in walks. He'll take a 5.36 ERA and atrocious 5.7 BB/9 into his next outing Tuesday on the road against the Cubs.
Jun 27 2017Snell, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and will start Wednesday's game against the Pirates, made several improvements in his delivery while at Triple-A Durham, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "I'm real excited about what I did, and also looking forward to what I'm about to do," he said. "I like where I'm at, I like what I learned, and definitely ready to get going. The young lefty has long struggled with control issues, and the 5.36 BB/9 he compiled over 42 innings with the Rays earlier in the season played a significant part in his demotion to Triple-A Durham. However, Snell displayed notable improvement in that area as his minor-league stint unfolded, giving up just four walks over the 17.2 innings encompassing his most recent trio of starts. He also racked up a sterling 5-0 record and 2.66 ERA, so both the Rays and Snell certainly have reason that the adjustments he made with the Bulls will pay dividends at the big-league level this go-around.
Jun 25 2017Snell will make his return to the Tampa Bay rotation Wednesday in Pittsburgh, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Snell got off to a rough start to the season, posting an 0-4 record in the majors with a 4.71 ERA. He was sent back to the minors to get back on track and did just that, winning five games for Triple-A Durham while posting a 2.66 ERA and 61:15 K:BB ratio. The 24-year-old lefty has now been deemed ready to return to the big leagues, where he'll take the rotation spot of Erasmo Ramirez.
Jun 6 2017Snell picked up his third win for Triple-A Durham on Monday, giving up an earned run on five hits and three walks over eight innings. He struck out seven. The multiple free passes are still haunting Snell, but he's otherwise been very impressive in his last three starts with the Bulls. Monday's effort brought his ERA down to 2.39 and served as his longest since arriving in Durham on May 13. The young lefty has given up just one earned run in three of his four trips to the mound and has compiled a 36:11 K:BB over 26.1 innings. A reduced pitch count is one of Snell's primary goals during his current minor-league stint, and he's making solid progress in that regard as well; the 24-year-old threw an efficient 100 pitches over his eight frames Monday, his lowest figure over his four starts.
May 26 2017Snell fired 112 pitches and racked up nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings in a start for Triple-A Durham on Friday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The young southpaw also gave up four earned runs on five hits and four walks, experiencing some of the control problems that led to his demotion in the first place. Snell is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 21:6 K:BB over 11.2 innings across two starts with the Bulls. He's likely due for several more appearances in the minors at a minimum, as the Rays would like to see him put together a stretch of outings where he locates the ball consistently.
May 13 2017Snell was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. This is a surprising development on its surface, but the fact of the matter is that Snell has struggled through his eight starts with the Rays this season. He routinely fell behind in the count in his start Saturday, which allowed the Red Sox to sit on certain pitches and push six runs across. Snell will need to work on his command during his upcoming stint at Triple-A before rejoining the big league club. He notched an 0-4 record with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP prior to being optioned.
May 13 2017Snell (0-4) allowed six earned runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in a loss to Boston on Saturday. He struck out five.Boston's bats made Snell work hard in this contest, forcing him to throw a season high in pitches (113) over only 5.2 innings. Efficiency has been a problem all season long for the 24-year-old southpaw, as he's only worked his way into the sixth inning twice. The potential to be a front-of-the-rotation starter still exists for Snell, but he's going to have to find a way to put away hitters before it is realized. He'll take another crack at earning his first win of the season next Friday at home against the Yankees.
May 8 2017Snell (0-3) allowed four runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out just two batters over five innings during Monday's loss to Kansas City. The 24-year-old lefty posted a 2.92 ERA with an 8.0 K/9 over his previous five starts, so Monday's poor outing against the Royals was a little surprising. Snell has a swing-and-miss pitch arsenal but is also sporting a 5.01 FIP for the season, so he's still trying to figure it out at the highest level. While Monday's outings was a little discouraging because Kansas City isn't a daunting opponent, Snell's long-term outlook remains promising. A road date against Boston is up next, and fading Snell at Fenway Park isn't out of the question.
May 3 2017Snell struck out nine batters while allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings in Wednesday's no-decision against Miami. He left with a lead that the bullpen blew for him, but then again, that's what happens when you almost never go beyond five innings. It took Snell 109 pitches to get those 15 outs, so even though he's provided decent ERA for fantasy owners and this strikeout improvement was promising, he's still more upside than production. When he puts it all together, though -- and that could certainly happen this season -- Snell is going to develop into an excellent starter.
Apr 29 2017Snell (0-2) gave up two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings while striking out three to take a no-decision in Friday's 7-4 win over the Blue Jays. After tossing 6.2 innings in his first start of the season, Snell hasn't lasted longer than five frames in any outing since. His 3.42 ERA and 1.48 WHIP aren't terrible, but the 24-year-old lefty's 18:18 K:BB through 26.1 innings indicates how thin his margin for error has been. His next start will come Wednesday at home against the Marlins.
Apr 22 2017Snell allowed three runs on three hits and five walks while striking out four batters over five innings during Saturday's win over Houston. The sophomore wasn't sharp Saturday, and he's lucky the Astros didn't do more damage. Snell currently sports a 5.43 FIP and has just 15 strikeouts through 21.1 innings for the campaign, so he's likely lucky to be sporting a 3.38 ERA. Command also continues to be a problem, and he'll need to improve on his 13.9 walk percentage. Snell projects to face the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre next.
Apr 17 2017Snell (0-2) allowed four runs -- just one earned -- on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters during Monday's loss to the Red Sox.Some poor luck spoiled Snell's outing Monday. Brad Miller botched what should have been the third out of the second inning, and then the Red Sox tacked on three runs before Snell struck out Xander Bogaerts to end the frame. With a 2.76 ERA and 13 strikeouts through 16.1 innings, the sophomore is off to an admirable start. He'll look to pick up his first win of the season in a tough home matchup against Houston on Saturday.
Apr 12 2017Snell allowed two unearned runs on two hits and three walks over just 4.2 innings during Monday's 8-4 loss to the Yankees.Snell has oodles of talent and sky-high upside, but it's likely that Tampa Bay continues to be cautious with the young lefty. After all, the Rays have traditionally been patient with their prospects, and Snell has just 21 starts at the highest level. The best is still to come, but don't be surprised if Snell settles into a nice groove and provides solid fantasy results as he continues to acclimatize to the highest level. At this stage of the game, you'll probably still want to be a little selective with the opponents you start him against, though.
Apr 6 2017Snell (0-1) threw 6.2 innings in Thursday's loss to the Blue Jays, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits to go with five walks and five strikeouts. The stat line for Snell's 2017 debut is surprising given that he managed to allow more runs than hits in the contest, although that is because one of the three hits was a grand slam by Kendrys Morales. The young left-hander struggled with control all evening, as he finished the night with just 57 of his 97 pitches going for strikes, although his fastball did stay in the mid-90s into the later part of his outing. Snell will look to put this performance behind him when he takes the mound in his next scheduled start Wednesday against the Yankees.
Apr 6 2017Snell, who endured an inconsistent spring during which he struggled with his control, is looking forward to a clean slate beginning with Thursday's start against the Blue Jays, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "I feel like I made a lot of strides," Snell said, "and now I'm ready to see if I really did."The promising southpaw notched two spring victories but also generated a 5.87 ERA, .298 BAA, 1.70 WHIP and a 17:11 K:BB over 23 innings. Snell was rather bluntly critiqued by manager Kevin Cash and pitching coach Jim Hickey after his first five appearances, with both noting that he needed to utilize his fastball more and get deeper into games. Snell rebounded by pitching at least four innings in his final three starts, although he gave up four earned runs apiece in two of those outings. However, his fastball did get back up into the mid-90s range he'd flashed in his final outing of 2016, setting up an anticipated season debut Thursday against a tough Blue Jays lineup. "Blake is still a very young pitcher," Cash said. "It's tough to really gauge what spring training is doing. We were happy to see his (velocity) pick back up where it finished off last year."
Mar 26 2017Snell (2-2), who struck out three but gave up four earned runs on six hits and one walk over 4.2 innings in Saturday's loss to the Red Sox, threw his fastball with more conviction, Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times reports.Although Snell exhibited better control in terms of issuing only one free pass, he still threw 92 pitches and allowed a three-run home run to Pablo Sandoval. On the positive side, the young lefty did appear to have more confidence while deploying his fastball and also used his slider effectively. Snell noticed the difference in his approach while still acknowledging he has plenty of room for improvement. "I was happy with the way I attacked the zone,'' Snell said. "I felt like I took a stride, I felt like I was more into it, more believing in what I have, more aggressive. Definitely taking that positive, knowing there's a bunch I still need to work on.''
Mar 21 2017Snell gave up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings in Monday's 5-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Pirates. He struck out three.Snell was "a little better" with his control Monday in the words of manager Kevin Cash, but still gave up a pair of home runs and issued another two free passes. The southpaw fired 76 pitches overall Monday, 46 of which found the strike zone. Snell is scheduled for one more extended spring outing, which is slated for Sunday against the Yankees.
Mar 15 2017Snell gave up an earned run on one hit and five walks over 2.2 innings in Tuesday's 9-6 Grapefruit League split-squad win over the Orioles. He recorded a strikeout.Snell's command issues were more prevalent than ever, with the young lefty not coming close to the five innings he was scheduled to pitch. The 24-year-old experienced the same breakdown in mechanics that bedeviled him last Thursday versus the Pirates, namely, his left shoulder flying open during his delivery. Snell threw a whopping 60 pitches overall during his time on the mound and is running out of time to get deeper into a game before the regular season. "This next outing is an important one for him," Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey said. "He needs to get deep in the ballgame, at least into the fifth inning, because he hasn't been close yet. We need to get over that hurdle real quick here."
Mar 10 2017Snell gave up two earned runs on five hits and a walk over two innings in Thursday's 10-8 Grapefruit League loss to the Pirates. He struck out three. After a smooth first inning, Snell ran into trouble in the second, surrendering a run-scoring single and an RBI double. The 24-year-old southpaw needed 49 pitches to get through his two frames, struggling with his command throughout. It was notably the second straight appearance with just under 50 pitches for the lefty, although the previous instance, which came last Saturday against the Orioles, was over a span of 2.2 innings and in relief. Snell was well aware of what the issues were Thursday and already looking ahead to an opportunity for redemption in his next start. "Lack of command," Snell said when asked about his performance. "I liked my changeup a lot today, so I kept throwing it. But I just need to command the zone better. I feel like I know what I need to do, and I'm looking forward to the next one."
Mar 4 2017Snell (1-1) gave up one earned run on one hit over 2.2 innings in Saturday's 1-0 Grapefruit League loss to the Orioles. He struck out two.Snell was much sharper in what was his second time on the mound this spring, allowing the only run of the game on a groundout by Logan Schafer in the seventh that plated Joey Rickard. The 24-year-old lefty fired just under 50 pitches, getting a solid workload in and impressing manager Kevin Cash in the process. "Really liked the way Blake threw,'' Cash said. "He had everything getting over the plate, that was great to see for him.''
Feb 28 2017Snell, who gave up an earned run on four hits over two innings and also recorded a strikeout in Monday's 7-2 Grapefruit League win over the Phillies, made an in-game adjustment with his delivery, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The promising southpaw missed high with his fastball early on, a problem that Snell has been diligently addressing in his bullpen work this spring. The spotty command helped lead to a sticky situation in the first, which culminated in an RBI single by Maikel Franco after Snell had already allowed Howie Kendrick and Michael Saunders to get on. However, Snell recognized his left shoulder was flying open during his delivery and made the necessary correction, helping him get through his second and final frame in somewhat smoother fashion. Although the 24-year-old has an impressive four-pitch arsenal, manager Kevin Cash continues to emphasize improved fastball command to Snell, whose solid 3.54 ERA in 2016 could be even better with a reduction of the 1.62 WHIP he also generated during his rookie campaign.
Sep 28 2016Snell pitched 2.2 scoreless innings against the White Sox on Wednesday before being lifted following a rain delay. He struck out four while allowing only one hit and one walk.Snell looked good out there, carrying forward the positive signs of down-the-stretch improvement he showed in flashes over the final couple months. If he can improve his control for next year, Snell has the talent to quickly rise into one of the higher echelons of fantasy starters.
Sep 23 2016Snell (6-8) shut the Yankees out over five innings in Thursday's win, working around five hits and three walks while striking out six. This outing was pretty much a microcosm of Snell's season -- the rookie has given up a lot of baserunners and offered precious little in the way of longevity, but has also done well to limit the damage against him, posting a 3.65 ERA in spite of a 1.64 WHIP. Those 94 strikeouts in 86.1 innings reinforce Snell's top-end potential, but he needs to cut down on his walks and become more efficient in general to sustain this success over the long haul. He'll wrap up his season against the White Sox on Wednesday.
Sep 16 2016Snell was hit hard in a no-decision Thursday versus Baltimore. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. After being staked to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first, Snell allowed four runs in the bottom of the frame. He settled in a bit, holding the O's scoreless for the next 3.1 innings until he was pulled in the midst of a fifth-inning jam. The rough outing raised Snell's ERA to a season-high 3.87. He'll look to rebound when he makes his next start Thursday against the Yankees.
Sep 15 2016Snell is putting significant importance on his remaining 2016 starts beginning with Thursday's tilt against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. "I only have three starts left and they are all really important to me," he said. "The growth I can gain from three outings is huge, so it's definitely important. I think it's something I need to do, so then in the offseason it allows me to be that much more focused, have more of a positive offseason. I definitely need to finish strong."The rookie has experienced a recent slide, lasting just 2.2 innings against the Yankees his last time out and no more than 3.2 innings in two other starts over his last four trips to the mound. He also was chased after just 1.2 innings against the Blue Jays on Aug. 10, the outing that seemed to initiate the rough patch he still largely finds himself in. Snell still sports a solid 3.62 ERA and 82 whiffs over his 77 innings, while only surrendering five homers over that span. However, he also has posted an unsightly 1.64 WHIP and issued multiple walks in all but two of his starts. Most of those numbers fall in line with his body of work over his five-plus minor league seasons with the exception of the control problems, with the aforementioned WHIP figure being his highest since High-A ball in 2014. Snell is scheduled to face the Yankees and White Sox in his final two starts after Thursday's matchup against the Orioles.
Sep 10 2016Snell (5-8) gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks over 2.2 innings in Friday's 7-5 loss to the Yankees. He struck out three. The rookie labored from the start, and built up to a whopping 88 pitches by the time he got the hook in the third. Things started poorly for Snell in the first when he gave up an RBI double to Rob Refsnyder and then unraveled in the third. Gary Sanchez led off that frame with a 423-foot solo shot, while Mark Teixeira contributed a double two batters later. He eventually scored when Snell uncorked a wild pitch, and the Rays starter was gone after allowing a single to Chase Headley, who was the next batter. The 23-year-old appears to have hit a rough patch recently, with his previous start against the Blue Jays being the exception. Otherwise, he's surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) over the 9.1 innings encompassing his three other starts since Aug. 22, all losses. He'll look to bounce back when he takes on the Orioles next Thursday.
Sep 4 2016Snell (5-7) (leg bruise) gave up an earned run on two hits and two walks over six innings in Saturday's 7-5 victory over the Blue Jays. The rookie put together one of the best efforts of his young career, despite dealing with the residual effects of a leg bruise suffered against the Astros in his last start. Snell recorded 13 swinging strikes overall and put in his longest outing since July 24 versus the A's, while also snapping a two-start losing streak. He'll look to keep the momentum when he takes on the Yankees next Friday.
Sep 3 2016Snell (bruised leg) is slated to start Saturday against the Blue Jays. There had been some concern as to whether Snell would be able to make this start, and even some confusion regarding which day he would take the ball this weekend. However, the Rays are listing him as Saturday's home starter against Marco Estrada and the Blue Jays, so make sure he is deployed as usual.
Aug 28 2016Snell (lower leg) expects to make his next start, tentatively scheduled for Friday against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.Snell was pulled in the fourth inning of his start Saturday against the Astros after he was struck on the left leg by a liner. Though he sustained some bruising and soreness as a result of the play, the right-hander indicated he's already noticing improvement with his condition and doesn't anticipate missing time. Fortunately for Snell, the Rays will have an off day in the schedule Thursday, meaning that he'll have an extra day of recovery time than he normally would between starts.
Aug 27 2016Snell left Saturday's game in the fourth inning with a bruised lower left leg.Snell probably wasn't long for Saturday's game anyway, as he'd given up four earned runs on nine hits in three-plus innings (64 pitches). He was hit in the leg by a sharp groundball off the bat of Houston's Marwin Gonzalez. The diagnosis of a bruise would seem to bode well for Snell's chances of avoiding a lengthy absence but his status for his next start is uncertain.
Aug 27 2016Snell left Saturday's game against the Astros with an apparent left foot injury, Marc Topkins of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The lefty tried to convince the training staff that he could stay in the game after taking a hard comebacker off his foot but he was ultimately replaced by Danny Farquhar. Snell didn't issue a walk in his three-plus innings on the mound but his performance can hardly be classified as a step forward, as he was knocked around for four runs on nine hits.
Aug 22 2016Snell (4-6) lasted just 3.2 innings in a loss to the Red Sox, allowing two runs. He surrendered four hits, walked five, and struck out three. The rookie lefty has really struggled with his command of late, walking 13 over his last three starts, and lasting just 10.1 total innings as a result. Snell's season began very well, but he may be hitting his wall as he closes in on his career-high in innings pitched. He'll try to find his command Saturday against Houston.
Aug 17 2016Snell (4-5) tossed five innings, allowing one run, five hits and four walks while striking out eight Padres in Tuesday's 15-1 win.The left-hander was aided by his team's offensive explosion, but even that couldn't hide the chinks in the rookie's armor. Snell needed 95 pitches to get through another inefficient outing, and issued four free passes for the second straight start. His fantastic 9.63 K/9 is offset by a 5.11 BB/9 that significantly damages Snell's elite ability to make hitters swing and miss. Snell will need better command of his pitches when he faces the Red Sox in his next start Monday.
Aug 10 2016Snell (3-5) allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits, struck out two and walked four over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday. The lefty should have been out of the first, but instead right fielder Steven Souza Jr. dropped a foul ball while Josh Donaldson was batting. Donaldson took advantage, recording a single. Snell retired the next two batters, but Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run homer in the next at-bat. Snell allowed two more runs to score in the second, and at one point, walked three straight hitters before manager Kevin Cash finally took him out. Snell is now 3-5 with a 3.18 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 56.2 innings this season. He'll try to get back on track in his next start Tuesday against the Padres.
Aug 6 2016Snell didn't factor into the decision Friday versus the Twins but turned in another solid outing, striking out seven while giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. The rookie was at 97 pitches by the sixth, leading to his exit. However, Snell certainly impressed once again while on the mound, inducing 12 swinging strikes while putting together a fifth straight start with two earned runs or less given up. He also stayed away from the long ball for the fourth time in the last five trips to the mound and has given up just two gopher balls over his 55 innings this season. Snell also brought his ERA down to a stellar 2.95 with the outing and will look for his fourth victory when he faces the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre next Wednesday.
Jul 31 2016Snell (3-4) struck out nine Yankees over 5.1 innings Sunday while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in a 5-3 win.He lasted just long enough to get credit for the victory, but it was the first time in four starts that Snell hadn't at least completed the sixth innings. The rookie put together a very impressive month of July, posting a 2.76 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB in 29.1 innings over five starts, and he'll look to keep that momentum going Friday when the Rays host the strikeout-prone Twins.
Jul 24 2016Snell allowed just two runs with four strikeouts and two walks across 6.2 innings in Sunday's start versus the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision. The rookie got off to a bumpy start by allowing two runs on four hits with just one out in the first inning, but he settled down and allowed just five baserunners over the next six frames. Snell has now delievered three consecutive quality starts, yielding just four runs in 18.2 innings in that span, and he has lowered his season ERA to 3.06 after an inauspicious start. He is showcasing the skills that made him a highly-regarded prospect heading into the year and will have the opportunity to build on his recent success next Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
Jul 20 2016Snell (2-4) allowed just one hit and three walks over six shutout innings and struck out nine in a win Tuesday over the Rockies. This was by far the best start of Snell's career, as he set a new career high in strikeouts and posted his first shutout outing in the major leagues. He was downright nasty, as Rockies hitters swung and missed 16 times in 96 pitches. And not only did Snell dominate, he did so at Coors Field, an impressive feat for anyone, much less a rookie.
Jul 7 2016Snell (1-4) tossed six quality innings, but took the loss Thursday against the Angels. He allowed two runs, four hits and two walks while striking out a career-high seven.Snell held the Angels scoreless through the first five frames, but he allowed two runs to score in the sixth on a single by Albert Pujols. He threw a first-pitch strike to the first 12 batters he faced and had his highest strike percentage of the season (64 percent). The southpaw also induced 13 swings and misses, way up from the 5.9 average he posted through his first five starts. Snell looked more like the No. 1 prospect Thursday than in any of his previous starts, and he's worthy of a roster spot in most formats, especially dynasty leagues.
Jul 2 2016Snell (1-3) gave up three earned runs on four hits and four walks over 5.1 innings in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Tigers. He struck out four. The young southpaw had several positives to derive from this one, as he did manage first-pitch strikes on 18 of the 24 batters he faced, and induced 10 swings-and-misses. Despite frequently getting ahead in the count however, Snell still handed out multiple free passes for the fourth straight start, and gave up his first career homer to Ian Kinsler in the fifth inning. The 23-year-old's control has been his biggest issue to date, and he'll look to chip away at his 1.71 WHIP and get back in the win column when he takes on the Angels next Thursday.
Jun 27 2016Snell (1-2) was a winner for the first time in his young career, despite allowing four runs in 5.1 innings against the Red Sox. He surrendered eight hits, walked four, and struck out four. The four earned runs allowed were actually the most he's allowed in any of his four starts at the Major League level. Although the 3.54 ERA is solid for Snell, he also owns a bloated 1.77 WHIP with the Rays. Snell's next start will be Saturday against the Tigers.
Jun 21 2016Snell (0-2) gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over 6.2 innings in a loss Tuesday to Cleveland.Snell was much improved over his first start, in which he lasted just 3.1 innings and gave up eight hits and five runs (but just one earned). He was a bit shaky with his control, as he threw just 13 first-pitch strikes to 29 batters and threw 57 strikes against 47 balls. Snell has issued seven walks already in 15 innings, and his 2.40 ERA will be heading north in a hurry if he can't rein it in.
Jun 16 2016Snell, who'll start Thursday afternoon against the Mariners, has a chance to stick in the rotation for the rest of the season, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 23-year-old, called up on June 12 to take Matt Andriese's spot in the rotation, has a definitive chance to carve out a role for the rest of the season with some strong performances. Snell was impressive in his major league debut April 23 against the Yankees, but was sent back down to Triple-A Durham following that outing. He's used the time since then to refine the mental aspects of his game, and believes the experience will serve him well in his second big-league go-around. "You just need to focus on this is where you're at, this is where you have to focus on being the best you can be," Snell said. "I gained more confidence, more trust in myself and I really believe a lot more in myself."
Jun 16 2016Snell (0-1) was tagged for five runs (just one earned) on eight hits and three walks in only 3.1 innings Thursday against the Mariners.A pair of Tim Beckham errors extended two rallies against Snell, but he also did himself no favors by throwing only 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. Snell's posted an astounding 90 strikeouts in 63 innings for Triple-A Durham this season, so there's no doubt he can miss bats, but he's also averaged a walk almost every other inning, which is not a great formula for translating success in the minors to baseball's highest level. The 23-year-old will need to rein in his control to be more effective, but he'll likely see an extended opportunity to make adjustments while pitching at the back end of the Rays' rotation.
Jun 12 2016Snell will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to start Thursday against the Mariners, Steve Carney of 620 AM Tampa Bay reports.Snell will take the rotation spot of Matt Andriese, who will move to the bullpen as a result of a corresponding announcement. Snell was solid in his first MLB start against the Yankees, tossing five innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts. If he can put together another strong outing this time around, freelance Rays writer Roger Mooney suggests there is a possibility the young left-hander could be here to stay. Considering Snell's pedigree, this news makes him a highly attractive waiver wire option for leagues with a Sunday deadline.
May 27 2015Snell gave up his first run of the season in his last start with Double-A Montgomery, and his ERA now sits at a sparkling 0.17 across 52 innings at High-A and Double-A.Snell is pitching out of his mind right now, and needs to be considered in most dynasty formats. He has 66 strikeouts while surrendering just 21 hits and 21 walks across both levels. The absurdity of his numbers makes him almost impossible to evaluate in dynasty leagues, as we do not know where he will regress to. That said, it does not seem like a stretch to view him as a top-50 prospect moving forward.
