Aug 16 2024The Astros released Diaz on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Roughly a month after reuniting with Houston on a minor-league deal in July, Diaz will now be let go in order to make room for Shay Whitcomb, who was promoted from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 34-year-old Diaz appeared in only two games while with the Astros, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He'll now presumably look to latch on with another organization on a minor-league deal.
Jul 22 2024The Astros selected Diaz's contract Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz joined the Astros on a minor-league contract July 13 after being released by the Athletics one week prior. He'll be starting up his second stint in the big leagues with Houston, after previously appearing in 262 contests between 2019 and 2022. Before Oakland cut him loose, the 33-year-old utility man logged 30 plate appearances in the big leagues this season, slashing .103/.133/.103 with no extra-base hits.
Jul 6 2024The Athletics released Diaz on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being designated for assignment Tuesday, Diaz will now enter the open market and attempt to latch on with another organization -- likely on a minor-league contract. The 33-year-old posted a lowly .236 OPS in 30 plate appearances while in Oakland this year, and he is unlikely to have much of an impact in the majors at this stage in his career.
Jul 2 2024The Athletics designated Diaz for assignment Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has gone just 3-for-29 in 12 games with the A's this season, and his poor performance has now officially caused him to lose his 40-man roster spot. The 33-year-old owns just a .621 OPS over 32 plate appearances in the minors this season, making it likely he passes through waivers unclaimed. Brett Harris was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.
Jun 21 2024Diaz drew a start at third base in Thursday's loss to the Royals, going 1-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran drew only his fifth start of June and delivered his third hit of the season across 24 plate appearances. Diaz began the month logging what was a third straight start at the time, but his sparse playing time since and advanced age may imply he's not much longer for the roster of an Athletics team that will increasingly focus on developing young players as the remainder of the season unfolds.
Jun 10 2024Diaz started at second base in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays and went 1-for-4 with a run. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz drew his first start since June 1 and his fourth overall since being activated from the injured list May 28. The veteran's single was only his second hit in that span, and Diaz figures to continue seeing sporadic playing time moving forward as long as Zack Gelof and Max Schuemann are healthy in the middle infield.
May 28 2024Diaz (calf) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has missed the first two months of the 2024 campaign with a strained right calf he sustained in early March. He appeared in 10 games at Triple-A during his rehab assignment and slashed .154/.313/.308 with six walks and five strikeouts in 32 plate appearances. He figures to compete with Max Schuemann and Abraham Toro for work at shortstop and third base.
May 21 2024Diaz (calf) appeared in back-to-back rehab games with Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday before receiving Sunday off. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz played seven innings at third base in Friday's game against El Paso before walking in his only plate appearance as the designated hitter Saturday. There's been no report of an aggravation of the injury to explain why Diaz was in the game for such a brief time Saturday, and he was then out of the lineup Sunday before the team's off day Monday. The Aviators also saw their scheduled game against Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday postponed due to rain, so Diaz will have had some extra rest if he does return to the lineup for the Aviators on Wednesday.
May 15 2024Diaz (calf) started at third base and played five innings in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over El Paso on Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz picked up the first hit of his three-game rehab stint on his final at-bat of the evening, and he took another step in the right direction by logging five frames on defense for the second straight game. The veteran is likely to continue taking a day off between appearances for the moment as his ramp-up following a long layoff continues.
May 12 2024Diaz (calf) went 0-for-3 with two walks over his first two rehab games with Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday and Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has yet to play a full game, but he did take a trio of plate appearances as the designated hitter when kicking off the rehab assignment Friday. He then progressed to playing defense Sunday, logging five innings at third base in the win over Round Rock. Diaz will probably continue to be given a day off between games for the time being given his age and the length of time it's taken for him to be able to return to game action.
May 8 2024Diaz (calf) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas this weekend, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz ran the bases Wednesday, which was the final hurdle he needed to clear before playing in games. He's on the 60-day injured list and won't be eligible for activation until late May, so Diaz will be in store for an extended rehab assignment.
May 7 2024Diaz (calf) has resumed taking batting practice but is not yet running the bases, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran began a light running program in mid-April, but as this latest report indicates, he hasn't progressed to carrying it out fully just yet. The fact Diaz is back to swinging a bat is certainly a positive, however, yet he appears to be at least a month away from his season debut given the expected length of the rehab assignment he'll require.
Apr 13 2024Diaz (calf) has begun a running program as part of his rehabilitation process, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder opened the season on the 60-day injured list, so he's seemingly only in the nascent stages of his ramp-up process. Diaz could eventually require a rehab assignment of maximum length whenever he's deemed ready to test himself in game action, given how long he's been sidelined.
Mar 29 2024The Athletics placed Diaz on the 60-day injured list Thursday with a right calf strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was able to resume light baseball activities at the tail end of spring training and is set to begin jogging this week, but he's not close to being ready for game action. Diaz should be on track to return when he's first eligible to come off the IL in late May and serve as a utility player for Oakland.
Mar 25 2024Diaz (calf) remains limited in his baseball activities and is still without a timetable for return, Jason Burke of SI.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz figures to need a rehab assignment of fairly lengthy duration whenever he is ready to begin ramping up, considering the calf strain he's currently dealing with occurred while rehabbing a groin strain. The combination of the two injuries adds up to nearly a month, and counting, of absences from game action, and Diaz appears to still be multiple weeks away from stepping back into a batter's box.
Mar 18 2024Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Monday that Diaz (calf) is likely to begin the season on the injured list, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz suffered a calf strain while rehabbing from a groin strain last week and won't be ready to resume a running program until later this week. He won't have enough time to fully ramp up ahead of Opening Day, even if he avoids another setback. In addition to the injury, Diaz's playing-time outlook also took a hit with the Athletics' recent addition of J.D. Davis.
Mar 17 2024Diaz (calf) has yet to resume baseball activities as of Sunday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder suffered a calf strain while rehabbing from a groin strain last week, and he hasn't played in spring games since late February. Diaz still needs to start a running progression and appears poised to begin the season on the injured list.
Mar 12 2024Diaz (groin) suffered a calf strain recently while running the bases, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been rehabbing a groin strain and now has a new injury to deal with. He's played just two Cactus League games to this point and can now probably be ruled out for the rest of the spring, with a stint on the injured list to begin the season likely. Once healthy, Diaz is expected to be in the mix primarily at third base and shortstop.
Mar 10 2024Diaz (groin) continues to ramp up baseball activities and could take minor-league at-bats this coming week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been progressively building back up from the groin strain he sustained before a Feb. 28 Cactus League game. If he's indeed able to begin logging at-bats again at minor-league camp in the next few days, his chances of being ready for Opening Day on March 28 would seemingly increase.
Mar 6 2024Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Wednesday that Diaz (groin) has been cleared to resume baseball activities, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was diagnosed with a left groin strain Feb. 29 and will face an uphill battle to get fully healthy in advance of Opening Day, but the fact that he's taking part in baseball activities just one week after suffering the injury at least bodes well for his chances of avoiding an extended absence to begin the season. He remains without a definitive timeline to re-enter the Athletics' Cactus League lineup, however.
Mar 2 2024Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Friday that it would be "optimistic" to think Diaz (groin) could return before the end of the Cactus League schedule, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is dealing with a strained left groin and is expected to miss at least the next 2-to-3 weeks of action. Barring a rapid recovery, it sounds like an injured list stint should be expected. Diaz is competing for Oakland's third base job, but his injury opens up more chances for Darell Hernaiz, Jordan Diaz and Brett Harris.
Feb 29 2024Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said that Diaz has been diagnosed with a left groin strain following an MRI on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though the groin strain has been confirmed, the Athletics are still awaiting the results of the MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Diaz, who slashed .229/.280/.337 over 344 plate appearances in his first season with Oakland in 2023, is projected to serve as a utility player during the upcoming campaign.
Feb 28 2024Diaz was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Giants due to left hip soreness, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had been slated to play third base against the Giants, but now those duties will fall to Jordan Diaz. Consider Diaz day-to-day for the time being.
Aug 23 2023Diaz went 1-for-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly and a two-run double in a win over the Royals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz extended the Athletics' lead to 2-0 with his first-inning sac fly and then knocked in Oakland's final two runs with his timely two-bagger in the third. The veteran infielder has now hit safely in six straight starts, a stretch during which he's boasting a .391 average while lacing five of his nine hits for extra bases.
Aug 19 2023Diaz went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs and a walk in Saturday's 7-2 extra-inning loss to the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took Cole Irvin deep in the second inning and tagged former teammate Shintaro Fujinami for the other homer in the sixth. The two-homer game snapped a 35-game power drought for Diaz, who had seven doubles while batting .236 in that span. He's at a .224/.283/.323 slash line for the year after his third multi-hit effort in his last four games. The utilityman has added 19 RBI, 22 runs scored, 13 doubles and a stolen base through 280 plate appearances this year.
Aug 14 2023Diaz went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a double in a loss to the Nationals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran slotted in at shortstop before subsequently shifting to first base later in the contest, and he posted his first multi-hit effort since July 8 during what was only his fourth start of August. Diaz has been in the starting nine in just 11 of the Athletics' 26 contests since the All-Star break, and although he owns a strong .263 average and .356 on-base percentage thus far in the second half, he could continue to see his playing time take a hit down the stretch as Oakland attempts to evaluate as many young players as possible.
Aug 2 2023Diaz is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is 2-for-16 over his past seven games and will take a seat for Wednesday's matchup with Los Angeles. Jordan Diaz will start at the hot corner and bat sixth for the A's.
Jul 26 2023Diaz entered Tuesday's loss to the Giants as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and remained in the game at shortstop, going 1-for-1 with a run scored. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz led off the eighth with a pinch-hit knock and ended up scoring the game-tying run on JJ Bleday's single later in the frame. The veteran infielder is carrying an abysmal .211/.263/.287 slash line on the season, but Diaz has enjoyed a reasonably productive July in comparison -- he's posted a .267 average and .636 OPS with two doubles and three RBI across 34 plate appearances during the month.
Jul 9 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Oakland faced left-handed starting pitchers in four of its past five games, Diaz had started at first base or third base on four occasions, going a collective 4-for-15 during that stretch. He'll be on the bench Sunday versus right-hander Tayler Scott and looks as though he'll be relegated to a utility role for the time being, with most of Diaz's starting opportunities expected to come against southpaws.
Jul 2 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run Friday to break out of an 0-for-15 slump, and he's on the bench Sunday for the second straight game. Tyler Wade is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in the series finale versus Chicago.
Jul 1 2023Diaz isn't in the Athletics' lineup Saturday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz broke a six-game hitless streak Friday with a pair of doubles while also driving in an RBI and scoring a run. He'll get a breather Saturday while Tyler Wade starts at shortstop and bats eighth.
Jun 27 2023Diaz is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tyler Wade will start at shortstop and bat eighth for the Athletics. Diaz has been getting more playing time with Kevin Smith (back) still sitting on the injured list, but the 32-year-old holds a weak .206/.264/.278 slash line in 197 plate appearances this season.
Jun 21 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had started at shortstop for three of the past four games, but he'll cede the position to Tyler Wade on Wednesday. With Nick Allen having been optioned to the minors and with Kevin Smith (back) now on the injured list, Diaz looks like he could receive another look in a near-everyday role in the Oakland middle infield.
Jun 18 2023Diaz went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has hit safely in four straight games and seven of his last nine, going 10-for-27 (.370) over the longer span. The homer was his first since April 14 and his second of the year. The versatile infielder is up to a .211/.269/.286 slash line with 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and a stolen base through 175 plate appearances while maintaining steady but not everyday playing time in the Athletics' middle infield.
Jun 11 2023Diaz went 3-for-4 with a game-winning RBI single and a double in an extra-inning victory over the Brewers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The struggling veteran put together his best offensive performance of the season yet, and it led to an unprecedented fourth straight win for Oakland. Diaz has now hit safely in three straight games to quickly boost his average 29 points to .208, and manager Mark Kotsay's willingness to stick with him as a rotational piece throughout the infield despite extended stretches of sparse production is paying off for the moment.
Jun 7 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After going 2-for-4 with a run in Oakland's 11-2 win Tuesday night, Diaz will head to the bench as the Athletics conclude their series in Pittsburgh with a day game. Kevin Smith will step in at shortstop Wednesday, and he and Diaz could end up forming a timeshare at the position after incumbent starter Nick Allen was demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
Jun 5 2023Diaz is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had started in five of the past six games, going hitless in 16 at-bats over that stretch to drop his season-long batting average down to .179. Though he's one of the highest-paid players on the Athletics in the first season of a two-year, $14.5 million deal, Diaz may nonetheless find himself on the bench more frequently in the near future given his wretched start to his tenure in Oakland.
Jun 3 2023Diaz is out of the lineup Saturday versus the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has registered an ugly .185/.241/.238 batting line with only five extra-base hits (one homer, four doubles) through 141 plate appearances this season with the Athletics. He's gone hitless in his last four games.
May 20 2023Diaz will sit Saturday versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will head to the bench after he went 2-for-4 with a strikeout in Friday's 5-1 loss. Nick Allen will take over at shortstop and bat ninth against Houston.
May 17 2023Diaz is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will take a seat for the second time in three games after he went 1-for-6 with a run scored in Tuesday's 9-8 win in 12 innings. Nick Allen will replace him at shortstop and bat ninth in the series finale with Arizona.
May 15 2023Diaz is out of the starting lineup against the Diamondbacks on Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was just activated off the injured list Sunday and logged two hits in his return from his hamstring injury, but he'll get a day off Monday against Merrill Kelly and the D-Backs. Nick Allen will play shortstop and hit ninth while Jace Peterson is hitting seventh and playing third base.
May 14 2023Diaz (hamstring) went 2-for-4 in Sunday's 11-3 loss to the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz missed just over two weeks with a hamstring strain. The first five hitters in the Athletics' lineup went a combined 0-for-19 on Sunday, but Diaz provided some solid batting from the No. 7 spot in the order. The versatile 32-year-old is slashing a meager .169/.237/.225 with one home run, six RBI, seven runs scored, a stolen base and two doubles through 97 plate appearances. Despite his lackluster numbers, he should be able to find fairly steady playing time.
May 12 2023Diaz (hamstring) ran before Thursday's game against the Rangers and has a chance to come off the injured list Sunday, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team's official site adds that manager Mark Kotsay noted Diaz has actually been able to run for the last few days without any issues. The veteran isn't expected to require a rehab assignment due to the brevity of his absence, so a return when first eligible Sunday remains very much in play.
May 2 2023Oakland placed Diaz (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There was talk that DIaz may not need to be placed on the injured list when the infielder was diagnosed with just a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, but the Athletics have decided not to play short-handed for the next week or so. Nick Allen was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move and should see plenty of playing time at shortstop while Diaz remains sidelined.
Apr 30 2023Diaz was diagnosed with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain after undergoing an MRI on Sunday and could avoid a stint on the injured list, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Diaz was forced out of Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Reds with the hamstring issue, manager Mark Kotsay suggested the 32-year-old would require a trip to the IL, but the better-than-expected MRI results have instead prompted the Athletics to view Diaz as day-to-day. An IL stint could still be in the forecast for Diaz, but the Athletics will wait and see how he's feeling following Monday's off day before making a decision on his status one way or the other.
Apr 29 2023Diaz left Saturday's game against the Reds with a left hamstring injury, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. He went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a stolen base before exiting. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was replaced as a pinch runner by Kevin Smith shortly after singling in Carlos Perez in the second inning. The versatile infielder should be considered day-to-day at this point.
Apr 28 2023Diaz is not in the starting lineup for Friday's contest against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went just 1-for-11 in the series against the Angels to drop his average to .143, and he's in danger of losing more playing time to some of the younger options on the Athletics. Jordan Diaz will play second base with Kevin Smith handling shortstop duties for Friday's battle against Cincinnati.
Apr 5 2023Diaz will take a seat Wednesday versus the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will get a breather after starting the first five games of season, going 3-for-19 with an RBI and a run scored over those contests. Nick Allen will draw the start at shortstop and bat eighth in Wednesday's series finale with Cleveland.
Mar 31 2023Diaz went 2-for-3 with a go-ahead RBI single and a walk in the Athletics' win over the Angels on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz and Seth Brown were the only two players with multiple hits for the Athletics in the pitchers' duel, and the former got on a team-high three times overall. Diaz's eighth-inning single snapped a 1-1 tie, plating Tony Kemp with what turned out to be the winning run. The veteran drew the start at shortstop Thursday, but he's projected to see time at second base and third base as well over the course of the season.
Mar 26 2023Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Sunday that Diaz will likely start at shortstop against right-handed pitching to begin the season, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Meanwhile, Nick Allen is expected to enter the lineup at shortstop versus southpaws, though Diaz's right-handedness and defensive versatility should be enough for him to see his fair share of playing time against lefties as well. Signed to a two-year, $14.5 million contract this winter, Diaz looks as though he'll be in line for a near-everyday role, given that he's one of the few Oakland hitters who has had a modicum of success at the highest level. Allen is the better defensive option at shortstop, but Diaz's clearer path to regular playing time and stronger track record at the dish makes him the superior fantasy option.
Mar 19 2023Although Diaz continues in a heated competition with Nick Allen for the starting shortstop role, the veteran's ability to play multiple positions should help him garner a near-everyday role irrespective of how the job battle shakes out, Steve Stockmar of MLB.com reports. "You could see Díaz at shortstop. That's kind of been a trend this Spring Training. That's not set in stone," manager Mark Kotsay said. "Aledmys can play in left, we have the opportunity to DH as well. So there's a ton of combinations that we can put together that we feel good about." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz inked a two-year, $14.5 million deal this offseason, and he's wasted no time validating the investment with a strong spring that includes a .357 average across 33 Cactus League plate appearances. Diaz's career .266 average, .763 OPS and modest 14.7 percent strikeout rate should afford him plenty of job security regardless of whether Allen is declared the victor of their competition, considering both his defensive versatility and the fact Kotsay has emphasized he'll be prioritizing offense this season after Oakland's struggles scoring runs throughout 2022.
Mar 17 2023Diaz is hitting .385 (10-for-26) with a double, four RBI, four walks and two runs across 10 Cactus League games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's torrid stretch at the plate is naturally a welcome sight after the Athletics committed $14.5 million through 2024 to him this offseason. The versatile infielder is one of several veteran signings by an Athletics team in transition, and he should serve as a decent source of power numbers and RBI as he likely fills in across the infield and at designated hitter during the upcoming campaign.
Dec 13 2022Diaz's two-year, $14.5 million contract with the Athletics was formally announced by the team Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz can play all over the field and he should have no trouble finding regular at-bats on Oakland's barren roster. He could hold some deep-league appeal.
Dec 7 2022Diaz and the Athletics agreed Wednesday on a two-year, $14.5 million contract, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The terms of Diaz's contract suggests that the Athletics likely envision him serving as a fixture in the lineup in 2023, after he largely served as a utility man in Houston over the past four seasons. He was a near-league-average hitter this past season, slashing .243/.287/.403 (96 wRC+) with 12 home runs, one stolen base, 38 RBI and 35 runs in 327 plate appearances. Diaz made at least five starts at every infield position as well as left field, but it's unclear where Oakland initially intends to use him primarily in 2023.
Nov 3 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for Game 5 of the World Series against the Phillies on Thursday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz started Games 2 and 4 and has gone 0-for-8 with four strikeouts in the series. Yordan Alvarez will man left field while David Hensley serves as the designated hitter.
Sep 26 2022Diaz went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored Sunday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has started eight of 13 games since returning from the injured list Sept. 13. He hasn't had a consistent defensive home but has picked up starts at left field and every infield position besides catcher and first base. In those 13 games, Diaz has managed a .281 average with two homers, six RBI and four runs scored, and he could continue to get regular playing time to close the campaign.
Sep 22 2022Diaz went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz opened the scoring for Houston with an RBI single in the first inning, and he added another run-scoring knock in the eighth frame. Though he doesn't have a consistent defensive home, Diaz has started five of nine games since being activated from the injured list. In that span, he's hit .333 with two homers, six RBI and three runs scored.
Sep 16 2022Diaz went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Thursday against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz entered the lineup with Jose Altuve getting a day of rest, though he doesn't project to have a consistent spot in the lineup for the final few weeks of the season. Nevertheless, Diaz provided the game-winning runs Thursday by hitting his 11th home run of the campaign in the seventh frame. He has drawn two starts since being activated from the injured list Sep. 13, and he's gone 3-for-7 in that limited sample. For the campaign, Diaz has a .256/.306/.419 slash line across 278 plate appearances.
Sep 13 2022Diaz (groin) went 2-for-4 in a 6-3 win Tuesday in Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was activated from the injured list before Tuesday's game after missing 23 games. Batting seventh and serving as the designated hitter, he singled in the fourth and seventh innings. It's unlikely that he'll see much time at DH down the stretch, as both Yordan Alvarez and Trey Mancini are better suited for that role and Diaz can play numerous positions.
Sep 10 2022Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that he hopes Diaz (groin) will be able to return Tuesday against the Tigers, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday and went 0-for-3 with a walk. He'll appear in rehab games Saturday and Sunday and is expected to get a day to rest prior to joining the Astros in Detroit on Tuesday.
Sep 7 2022Diaz (groin) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sugar Land on Thursday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll presumably stick with Sugar Land through the weekend and get exposure to a few different positions before the Astros potentially activate him from the 10-day injured list early next week. Prior to being shut down with the left groin injury, Diaz had been serving as Houston's primary starter in left field, but it's unclear if he'll immediately recapture a regular role once reinstated. Trey Mancini would represent Diaz's top threat for playing time.
Sep 3 2022Diaz (groin) ran and went through lateral movement drills prior to Saturday's game against the Angels, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz hasn't played since mid-August, but he's taking steps in the right direction. He's expected to begin a rehab assignment Thursday, Rome reports.
Aug 23 2022Astros general manager James Click said Sunday that he expects Diaz (groin) to miss "a few weeks," Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Click's comments would seem to imply that Diaz, who was placed on the 10-day injured list last Wednesday, won't be ready to go when first eligible to rejoin the Astros this weekend. While Diaz is on the shelf, Yordan Alvarez is expected to pick up more work in left field, which will open up more frequent starts at designated hitter for trade-deadline pickup Trey Mancini.
Aug 17 2022Diaz (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was removed from Tuesday's matchup due to left groin discomfort and will be unavailable for at least a week and a half. Yordan Alvarez is starting in left field while Trey Mancini serves as the designated hitter Wednesday against the White Sox, and J.J. Matijevic was called up by the Astros to provide additional outfield depth in Diaz's absence.
Aug 16 2022Manager Dusty Baker said after Tuesday's loss to the White Sox that Diaz is "probably not available" for the rest of the Astros' current road trip, which runs through Sunday in Atlanta, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The utility man is could be headed to the injured list if Baker is right, though Diaz himself hopes it's just tightness and that he'll feel better Wednesday. The 32-year-old at least seems likely to be unavailable for the remaining two games in Chicago.
Aug 14 2022Diaz is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has an .806 OPS in August but will sit for the second consecutive game Sunday. The 32-year-old may not be an everyday player down the stretch, but he should still see regular action, especially in left field, with Michael Brantley (shoulder) out for the season. Chas McCormick will start in left and bat seven in the series finale versus the A's.
Aug 13 2022Diaz will sit Saturday against Oakland, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz should continue to play frequently in left field down the stretch after Michael Brantley underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. Trey Mancini will occupy that spot Saturday.
Aug 10 2022Diaz is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will get a day off after he went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Tuesday's win. Chas McCormick will take over in left field and bat seventh versus Texas.
Aug 7 2022Diaz will start at second base and bat second in Sunday's game against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a one-game absence due to a sore ring finger, Diaz checked back into the lineup for Saturday's 4-1 loss, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles an an RBI. He'll make his second straight start in the middle infield, this time replacing a resting Jose Altuve after spelling Jeremy Pena on Saturday. Moving forward, Diaz is projected to see most of his playing time in left field while the Astros wait for Michael Brantley (shoulder) to return from the injured list.
Aug 6 2022Diaz (finger) will bat sixth and play shortstop Saturday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz missed Friday's game with a sore left ring finger, but the issue was evidently a minor one. He'll return to the lineup to give the slumping Jeremy Pena a rest.
Aug 5 2022Diaz, who is not in Friday's lineup against the Guardians, is day-to-day with a sore left ring finger, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Imaging on the finger revealed no fractures, and manager Dusty Baker said Diaz might be available to pinch hit Friday. Diaz is hitting .306 with three home runs over his last 10 games.
Aug 2 2022Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Monday's loss to the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been a regular in the Houston lineup of late, starting nine of the 13 games since the All-Star break. He's hit very well in that span, maintaining a .361 average with three homers, five RBI and seven runs scored. However, once Trey Mancini and Alex Bregman (personal) are plugged into the lineup, it may cost Diaz a significant amount of playing time.
Jul 31 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, manager Dusty Baker said Diaz was initially penciled in to start Sunday, but the Astros opted to withhold the 31-year-old from the lineup to give him a chance to rest his legs. Chas McCormick will draw the start in left field in place of Diaz, who had been included in the starting nine in six of the previous seven contests.
Jul 30 2022Diaz went 3-for-5 with two solo home runs in an 11-1 win over the Mariners on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz joined in on the Astros' hit parade with a couple of solo home runs and a single to help power his team to a victory over their surging division rivals. It was Diaz's first two-homer game of 2022. The utility player has put together a healthy .286/.351/.600 slash line in July and now has eight long balls in 64 games this season, matching his total from 84 contests in 2021.
Jul 28 2022Diaz isn't in the lineup Thursday against the Mariners, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz started the last four games and went 3-for-15 with a double, three runs, a walk and a strikeout over that stretch. Chas McCormick is taking over in left field and batting seventh.
Jul 21 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader with the Yankees, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz, who went 1-for-4 with a double in the Astros' 3-2 win in Game 1, will see his streak of three straight starts come to an end. Chas McCormick will replace Diaz in left field for the nightcap, and the two will likely have to battle for one spot in the lineup moving forward with the Astros bringing back designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (hand) from the injured list earlier Thursday. Another everyday player, Michael Brantley (shoulder) remains on the IL coming out of the All-Star break, but he's without a clear timeline for a return.
Jul 12 2022Diaz went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored and two walks in Tuesday's 6-5 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz hit a two-run home run in the first inning to open the scoring and extend his hitting streak to seven games. In that span, he's gone 11-for-28 (.393) with three of his six homers this season. The versatile 31-year-old is seeing steady playing time in left field, and he's ran with it. He's up to a .241/.295/.382 slash line with 20 RBI, 19 runs scored and a stolen base through 183 plate appearances this year.
Jul 10 2022Diaz went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, a walk and a run scored in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz made his second straight start as the designated hitter. His steal Sunday was his first of the year on his second attempt -- he hasn't posted more than four steals in a major-league season, and he hadn't successfully notched a theft since 2019 entering this contest. The 31-year-old has often served as a utility man, but regular playing time at designated hitter and in left field could be open with Yordan Alvarez (hand) and Michael Brantley (shoulder) both sidelined. For the season, Diaz is slashing .234/.281/.359 with five home runs, 18 RBI, 17 runs scored and six doubles, and his versatility could be a plus for fantasy managers.
Jul 7 2022Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took Brad Keller yard in the sixth inning to record his fifth homer of the season and second in as many games. He's been in the lineup for three of Houston's last four games, primarily at the expense of Chas McCormick. Despite the nice stretch, Diaz is hitting only .227/.275/.347 across 160 plate appearances on the season.
Jul 5 2022Diaz went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's playing time has predictably dropped off since Jeremy Pena (thumb) returned from the injured list. Tuesday saw Diaz hit his first homer and post his first three-hit game since June 3. The utility man is up to a .226/.276/.329 slash line with four homers, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and three doubles through 156 plate appearances. He should continue to see semi-regular playing time whenever the Astros' main infielders need a breather.
Jun 26 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz, who started the last two games after missing four straight contests due to right shoulder soreness, is expected to move back into a utility role on a full-time basis moving forward after the Astros reinstated top shortstop Jeremy Pena (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Sunday. While Pena was sidelined for approximately two weeks, Diaz went 4-for-22 with a double, a walk, two runs and zero RBI while serving as Houston's primary shortstop.
Jun 24 2022Diaz (shoulder) will bat seventh and play shortstop Friday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz missed the last four games with left shoulder soreness. He returns to a temporary starting role but will likely head back to the bench soon, as Jeremy Pena (thumb) appears close to a return from the injured list.
Jun 23 2022Diaz (shoulder) isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been dealing with a sore left shoulder and will be out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game. He was available off the bench Wednesday but was ultimately held off the field. It wouldn't be surprising to see him available off the bench once again Thursday, but Mauricio Dubon will remain at shortstop and bat seventh.
Jun 22 2022Diaz (shoulder) isn't starting Wednesday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will be out of the lineup for a third consecutive game as he continues to deal with left shoulder soreness. However, he hit in the cage Wednesday and will be available off the bench if needed, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. Mauricio Dubon will start at shortstop and bat ninth.
Jun 21 2022Diaz (shoulder) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even with the benefit of Monday's team off day, Diaz is apparently still dealing with too much discomfort in his left shoulder to rejoin the lineup. Mauricio Dubon will pick up another start at shortstop in place of Diaz, who had been serving as the primary option at the position while Jeremy Pena (thumb) is on the injured list.
Jun 19 2022Diaz (shoulder) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was removed from Saturday's game with left shoulder discomfort and will be sidelined for at least one contest. Mauricio Dubon will take over at shortstop for the Astros for the series finale versus Chicago. According to Rome, Diaz said he needs to meet with a doctor before a determination is made on whether he'll require an MRI, so the 31-year-old doesn't seem likely to be available off the bench Sunday.
Jun 18 2022Diaz exited Saturday's game against the White Sox with left shoulder discomfort, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being replaced at shortstop by Mauricio Dubon. With Jeremy Pena (thumb) also out, Dubon could see an expanded role at shortstop if Diaz is forced to miss time, though Diaz is merely considered day-to-day for now.
Jun 16 2022Diaz went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored Wednesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is expected to take over the primary shortstop role with Jeremy Pena (thumb) sidelined. Diaz hit seventh Wednesday and managed the majority of his production in the first inning by drawing a walk and coming around to score. He's hitting just .217/.268/.304 for the season across 123 plate appearances, though this will be his first chance for consistent playing time since early May.
Jun 15 2022Diaz will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll pick up his second start in a row and looks primed to serve as the Astros' everyday shortstop after star rookie Jeremy Pena (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Over 119 plate appearances on the season, Diaz has hit .214 with three home runs and no stolen bases, so his fantasy upside isn't especially high even while he remains part of a potent Houston lineup.
Jun 3 2022Diaz went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Friday's 10-3 win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was just 1-for-13 in his previous five games, but he broke that skid in a big way Friday. The utility man hit a two-run home run in the second inning to open the scoring and added an RBI single in the fourth. This was his seventh multi-hit game in 33 contests this season. With a .233/.282/.330 slash line in 110 plate appearances, Diaz shouldn't be expected to see much more than a reserve role when the Astros' lineup is healthy.
May 16 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Boston, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Jeremy Pena (knee) remains on the bench for the fourth game in a row, but Diaz will take a seat in favor of the newly-acquired Mauricio Dubon after starting at shortstop in each of the Astros' three contests over the weekend. Diaz, who recently overcame a nagging undisclosed injury of his own, went 4-for13 with a run and an RBI during the Astros' series victory in Washington.
May 13 2022Diaz (undisclosed) is starting Friday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old sat out recently due to a nagging unspecified injury, but he entered Thursday's matchup against the Twins after Jeremy Pena (knee) was removed from the game. Diaz went 0-for-2 with a strikeout against Minnesota, but he'll start at shortstop and bat seventh in his return to the lineup Friday.
May 12 2022Manager Dusty Baker said Thursday that Diaz continues to tend to a nagging unspecified injury, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The injury first surfaced Sunday, when Diaz went 2-for-3 with a grand slam before departing the Astros' 5-0 win over the Tigers in the eighth inning. He hasn't appeared off the bench since and will remain out of the lineup for Thursday's series finale with the Twins. Baker said he's hopeful Diaz will be able to pick up a start at some point during the Astros' three-game series in Washington this weekend, so whatever is bothering the veteran infielder doesn't appear to be too significant.
May 8 2022Diaz was removed in the top of the eighth inning of Sunday's 5-0 win over the Tigers with an apparent injury, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. He went 2-for-3 with a grand slam before exiting. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Lerner, Diaz looked to have experienced some discomfort during his final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, when he grounded out to second base. Per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, manager Dusty Baker said Diaz was dealing with some "nagging stuff," so he should be considered day-to-day for now. Diaz stayed in the contest to play the field for an inning before Jeremy Pena was summoned from the bench to replace him. The injury was a down note on an otherwise productive day for Diaz, whose second home of the season effectively decided the game.
May 2 2022Diaz is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Jose Altuve (hamstring) returning from the 10-day injured list Monday and reclaiming his spot as the Astros' everyday second baseman, Diaz's playing time is likely to take a substantial hit. He had been filling in at the position for the past two weeks along with Niko Goodrum, with Diaz starting in eight of the 12 games that Altuve missed. Diaz's versatility gives him some other avenues to at-bats, but with all of the Astros' key position players at full strength, the 31-year-old will only pick up starts when one of the regulars requires a breather.
Apr 30 2022Diaz isn't starting Saturday against the Blue Jays, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will get a breather after he went 0-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts in the last three games. Niko Goodrum will start at the keystone and bat second Saturday.
Apr 24 2022Diaz will start at second base and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz and Niko Goodrum have now alternated starts at the keystone for five straight games following Jose Altuve's (hamstring) placement on the 10-day injured list. Though Diaz draws the start Sunday with southpaw Yusei Kikuchi on the mound for Toronto, it's not entirely clear if the Astros plan to deploy a platoon arrangement between the righty-hitting Diaz and the switch-hitting Goodrum while Altuve is on the shelf.
Apr 18 2022Diaz will return to the bench for Monday's game against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz enjoyed a run of five consecutive starts from April 8 through 13, but his playing time has tailed off following Yuli Gurriel's recent return from paternity leave. He'll be on the bench Monday for the third time in four games, and at-bats are likely to become even harder to come by for Diaz with Yordan Alvarez (illness) making his return to the lineup after a five-game stint on the COVID-19 injured list.
Apr 8 2022Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in a 13-6 triumph over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz tied the game with one of six Houston home runs in the fourth inning and later singled home another run in the seventh. The utility man should see semi-regular at-bats this season in a fill-in roll throughout the infield and has shown the ability to hold down an opportunity if it arises.
Mar 22 2022Diaz signed a one-year, $4.45 million contract with the Astros on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The agreement means Diaz will avoid arbitration in his final year of eligibility. The utility infielder is coming off a season in which he hit .259/.317/.405 in 84 games, good for a 99 wRC+.
Sep 22 2021Diaz went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 10-5 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz hit a solo home run off Packy Naughton as a part of back-to-back home runs in the second inning. In addition, he drove in a pair of runs on a fourth-inning single. However, he is batting just .140 with a .499 OPS in his last 18 games. For the season, the 30-year-old is slashing .273/.332/.428 with eight long balls, 44 RBI and 28 runs scored in 295 plate appearances.
Sep 16 2021Diaz started at shortstop for a resting Carlos Correa and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 7-2 win over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gone are the days of July and August when Diaz was a daily member of the starting lineup, filling in for the then-injured Alex Bregman. He batted .337 with an .893 OPS while getting consistent at-bats over 24 games. Since Bregman's return, Diaz has received sporadic playing time and is 4-for-44 (.091) over 15 games.
Sep 5 2021Diaz started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Saturday's 10-2 loss to San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Altuve was given the day off Saturday in the midst of a dismal 4-for-37 funk, which caused him to show frustration during Friday's 6-3 win. Diaz, who had received regular at-bats as a fill-in at third base while Alex Bregman was unavailable, has been moved around the diamond to keep fresh, but he's 1-for-25 since Bregman returned to action Aug. 25. Saturday's start was his first since Tuesday.
Aug 25 2021Diaz is expected to move into a utility role for the Astros moving forward after Alex Bregman (hamstring/quadriceps) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been a credible performer while filling in at third base for Bregman over the past month, hitting .337 with four home runs, 19 RBI and 11 runs in 24 games. According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Diaz will stick in the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Royals as Houston's starting left fielder, but that's only because Michael Brantley is getting some routine maintenance for the day game after a night game. Expect Diaz to pick up a handful of starts per week now that Bregman is back in the fold.
Aug 21 2021Diaz isn't starting Saturday's game against the Mariners, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will get a rare day off after he went 5-for-10 with two doubles, two RBI and a run across the last two games. Yuli Gurriel will shift to the hot corner while Taylor Jones starts at first base.
Aug 17 2021Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and and an additional RBI in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz extended a hit streak to eight games when he launched his seventh homer of the season to lead off the fifth inning. He later singled home a run but was cut down at second trying to stretch it into a double. He's hit safely in 16 of 17 games, going 25-for-72 (.347) with four home runs, five doubles, 16 RBI and 10 runs scored during that stretch. That level of production has been key for the Astros as Alex Bregman (quadriceps) is slow to return. The injured third baseman is waiting to start a second rehab appearance and may not be back until next week.
Aug 11 2021Diaz went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI in Wednesday's 5-1 win over Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The infielder was productive in Wednesday's win, as all three of his hits drove in runs. He's posted multiple hits in three of his last four games, going 8-for-16 with three doubles and six RBI in that span. Diaz lifted his slash line to .298/.348/.485 with six home runs, 32 RBI, 22 runs scored and 14 doubles through 184 plate appearances. He should continue to log regular playing time at third base until Alex Bregman (quadriceps) is able to return, at which point Diaz will likely slip back into a utility role.
Aug 8 2021Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz doubled off Caleb Thielbar in the eighth inning, driving in Carlos Correa and Kyle Tucker. In addition, he added a single in the second frame. The 30-year-old is batting .295 with three homers and 10 RBI over his last 10 games since coming off the injured list. On the season, he is slashing .283/.333/.472 with six long balls, 28 RBI and 21 runs scored in 171 plate appearances.
Aug 1 2021Diaz went 2-for-4 with two home runs and an additional RBI in Saturday's 8-6 loss to San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was caught up in the homer dome at Oracle Park, as the two teams combined for eight long balls. Since being activated off the injured list, Diaz is 8-for-19 with three home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored. He continues to slot in at third base while Alex Bregman (quadriceps) is on a rehab assignment.
Jul 31 2021Diaz went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 9-6 win over San Franciso. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's solo shot in the ninth gave Houston breathing room, as the Giants did not fold after falling behind 7-2 in the sixth inning. He's had multiple hits in all three games since being activated off the injured list and will continue as the fill-in at third base for the injured Alex Bregman (quadriceps).
Jul 29 2021Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI in Wednesday's 11-4 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz continues to fill in for the injured Alex Bregman (quadriceps), who remains on a rehab assignment that should run through next week. In the two games since coming off his own stay on the injured list, Diaz has four hits, two doubles, four RBI and two runs over 11 plate appearances.
Jul 28 2021Diaz started at third base and went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 8-6 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was activated off the injured list Monday but stayed on the bench for that night's game while Abraham Toro filled in at third base for the injured Alex Bregman (quadriceps). A day later, the Astros traded Toro to Seattle, and Diaz became the new fill-in. Bregman just began a rehab assignment Monday that is expected to last a week to 10 days, so Diaz should be a lineup regular through this week.
Jul 26 2021Diaz (hand) was activated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran infielder has been sidelined since early June with a fractured left hand, but he'll rejoin the active roster Monday after a six-game rehab stint. Diaz should fill a utility role now that he's healthy and could split time at third base with Abraham Toro until Alex Bregman (quadriceps), who begins a rehab assignment Monday, is activated from the injured list.
Jul 25 2021Diaz (hand) will be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz appeared in six games during his recent rehab assignment, and he went 4-for-18 with a double, two runs, two RBI, five walks and four strikeouts during that time. The 30-year-old has been sidelined since June 6 due to a fractured right hand, but he should be available for the series opener in Seattle.
Jul 24 2021Diaz (hand) could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list in time for Houston's three-city road trip that begins next week, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following the team's three-game home series with the Rangers this weekend, the Astros embark Monday on a three-city tour of Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles (Dodgers). Diaz, who's been out since fracturing his left hand June 6, has appeared in five rehab games, including the last three at Double-A Corpus-Christi.
Jul 21 2021Diaz (hand) went 0-for-2 with two walks in a rehab game at Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros moved Diaz's rehab from the Gulf Coast League to Double-A Corpus Christi, for which he served as the designated hitter Tuesday. The Astros will want the utility infielder play in the field, probably on back-to-back days, before reinstating him to the active roster.
Jul 18 2021Diaz (hand) will move his rehab to Double-A Corpus Christi and spend most of this week with the Hooks, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Hooks kick off a six-game road trip to Midland on Tuesday. Diaz spent two games with Houston's Gulf Coast League affiliate, going 2-for-5 with a double, a walk and two RBI.
Jul 16 2021Diaz (hand) went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the rookie-level Gulf Coast Astros on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This starts the clock on Diaz's 30-day rehab assignment. The infielder/outfielder has been out since June 5 with a fractured left hand. While he's been sidelined, Robel Garcia and Abraham Toro have picked up the slack as utility players.
Jul 11 2021Manager Dusty Baker said Sunday that Diaz (hand) is going to West Palm Beach to begin a rehab assignment with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast Astros, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest, Diaz will resume his workouts with Palm Beach and is scheduled to play in his first rehab game Thursday. The utility man, who is working his way back from a broken hand suffered in early June, is targeting a late-July activation, per Baker. With that in mind, he'll likely get a decent amount of games under his belt in the minors before being reinstated from the IL.
Jul 9 2021Manager Dusty Baker said that Diaz (hand) will hit on the field Friday, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz hit off a tee last Saturday and is now set to take part in batting practice for the first time since fracturing his left hand June 6. It's not entirely clear when Diaz is targeting a return, but he'll likely need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated. His initially recovery timeline was 4-6 weeks, so assuming that holds, he should have a strong chance of being reinstated by the end of July.
Jul 4 2021Diaz (hand) hit off a tee Saturday for the first time since landing on the injured list June 8, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Houston manager Dusty Baker said Diaz is "still a ways away" from returning. He was initially given a six-to-eight week prognosis, and it would seem logical the Astros give him until after the All-Star break. Houston has been getting by with a mix of Robel Garcia, Taylor Jones and Abraham Toro while their top utility man is sidelined.
Jun 8 2021Diaz (hand) was officially placed on the injured list Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move is an expected one, as manager Dusty Baker said Sunday that Diaz would miss 6-to-8 weeks with a broken hand, an injury he suffered after getting hit by a pitch Saturday against the Blue Jays. Michael Brantley (hamstring) was activated off the injured list in a corresponding move.
Jun 6 2021Astros manager Dusty Baker said Sunday that Diaz will be sidelined for approximately 6-to-8 weeks due to a fractured left hand, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz left Saturday's game against Toronto in the fourth inning after being hit by a pitch on the hand. Original reports indicated that he only suffered a contusion, but follow-up tests revealed structural damage to his hand. According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Diaz will meet a hand specialist later this week, when a determination could be made regarding whether surgery will be necessary. Either way, the utility man looks destined to be sidelined through the All-Star break while he recovers from the injury. Houston is expected to officially move Diaz to the 10-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's series opener in Boston.
Jun 5 2021Diaz was diagnosed with a left hand contusion after leaving Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was hit by a pitch in the top of the fourth inning and was immediately removed from the contest. He'll undergo X-rays after the game to help determine the extent of his injury.
Jun 4 2021Diaz went 3-for-6 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 13-1 win over Toronto. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The utilityman got aboard with a single and scored the opening run on Yordan Alvarez's RBI double in the fourth inning. In the seventh, Diaz added a solo shot, his third homer of the year. The 30-year-old is slashing .281/.339/.439 with 18 RBI and 14 runs scored across 124 plate appearances. He's 8-for-21 (.381) during his personal five-game hitting streak -- if he remains hot at the plate, his defensive versatility should help him stick in the lineup.
May 31 2021Diaz started at first base and went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a runs scored in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has been needed everywhere the last stretch of games due to injuries to lineup regulars. He's started the last four games: two at DH for Yordan Alvarez (wrist), once in left field for Michael Brantley (hamstring) and once at first base for Yuli Gurriel (finger). He's just 3-for-18 during that stretch but should get consistent at-bats in the short term given the number of injuries with which Houston is dealing.
May 30 2021Diaz went 1-for-5 with a walk in Saturday's 11-8 extra-innings loss to the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz made his second consecutive start as the designated hitter and third overall (one start in LF), as the Astros work around injuries to Yordan Alvarez (wrist) and Michael Brantley (hamstring).
May 26 2021Diaz went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Wednesday in a win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz missed three games with a tight left hamstring, but he returned to the lineup in fine fashion Wednesday, belting a two-run homer in the seventh inning. The long ball was only his second this season. Diaz has been a solid contributor overall, batting .276 and collecting 15 RBI in 94 plate appearances.
May 21 2021Diaz left Friday's game against the Rangers with left hamstring tightness, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If "tightness" is code for a strain, Diaz would likely require a stint on the 10-day injured list. He went 1-for-2 with an RBI double before exiting and was replaced by Carlos Correa.
May 14 2021Diaz started at first base in place of Yuli Gurriel (illness) and went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 4-3 extra-innings win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gurriel was removed from Wednesday's game when he suddenly felt sick and got a full day off to recover. Diaz has been a jack of all trades in Houston's lineup, making his third appearance at first base Thursday.
May 12 2021Diaz started at third base and went 1-for-4 in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz took over the hot corner for Alex Bregman, who was given the day off. His playing time dried up when a bunch of teammates returned to action after spending time in COVID-19 protocols. His start Tuesday was just the third in the last 10 games. For now, his value is tied to his versatility, having played all four infield positions and the two corner outfield slots.
May 6 2021Diaz started in right field and went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz replaced the slumping Kyle Tucker, but manager Dusty Baker affirmed that this was a temporary assignment, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. "This is temporary," the manager said. "This is today. Might not even be the whole game. Kyle was hitting the ball great and then the last few games he's been struggling." Sure enough, Tucker replaced Diaz later in the game.
May 2 2021Houston manager Dusty Baker plans to work Diaz into right field, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was mostly a shortstop and third baseman prior to joining the Astros, who have expanded his positional competency. He's filled in at first base, second base and left field during his time in Houston. The addition of right field to his portfolio would give Baker an option to the struggling Kyle Tucker, whose 0-for-4 effort on Saturday dropped his season average to .173.
Apr 30 2021Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and four RBI in Friday's 9-2 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The utility player was right at the heart of a big night by the Houston offense, collecting one RBI on a third-inning groundout and another on a single in the seventh before capping the team's scoring with a two-run double in the ninth. Diaz heads into May hitting .259 with one homer, seven runs and 11 RBI through 17 games.
Apr 28 2021Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After recently starting nine times during a 10-game span, Diaz will be on the bench for the third day in a row Wednesday. The return of Jose Altuve from the COVID-19 injured list earlier this week appears to have closed Diaz's window for regular playing time. He'll now transition back into a utility role, which may only afford him a start or two per week when the Astros have their full complement of position players available.
Apr 24 2021Diaz isn't starting Saturday's game against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had started each of the last eight games and went 7-for-31 with three doubles, four RBI, two runs and seven strikeouts during that time. Robel Garcia will start at second base Saturday, batting seventh.
Apr 23 2021Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has started seven consecutive games and hit safely in the last six. He's been getting regular at-bats filling in at third base for Alex Bregman, who has since returned from the COVID-19 injured list, and second base for Jose Altuve, who is still on the list. That window of opportunity is expected to close as soon as this weekend, when Altuve is projected to return. During Diaz's run as a fill-in, he's gone 7-for-27 with three doubles, four RBI and two runs scored.
Apr 19 2021Diaz started at second base and went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 7-2 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's second-inning double, Houston's lone hit, plated Carlos Correa to briefly knot the game at one run apiece. The offense could continue to slumber this week with a minor-league contingent filling in for three players unavailable due to health and safety protocols -- Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez. Diaz has alternated between third and second base and should continue to be an everyday presence at least through the rest of the road trip that ends Wednesday in Colorado.
Apr 17 2021Diaz started at third base and went 1-for-3 with two RBI in Friday's 6-5 loss to Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz should be a busy man while several teammates, including second baseman Jose Altuve and third baseman Alex Bregman, serve time on the COVID-19 protocols list. He filled in for Altuve on Wednesday, then for Bregman on Friday. The team is also without utility infielder Robel Garcia (COVID-19 protocols). Diaz should be in the lineup regularly for as long as the Astros are without their infield regulars.
Apr 14 2021Diaz will start at second base and bat second Wednesday against the Tigers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Astros placing five position players on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday -- including three everyday players in Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman -- Diaz looks poised to handle an everyday role for time being. He'll be directly filling in for Altuve on Wednesday, though Diaz could shift over to third base if Altuve happens to beat Bregman back from the IL. The clear path to playing time in the short term along with the favorable lineup spot could make Diaz a decent speculative pickup in deeper leagues until Houston activates both Altuve and Bregman.
Apr 6 2021Diaz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Tuesday's victory over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz followed Kyle Tucker's lead, going back-to-back with a solo home run against Dylan Bundy in the second inning to even up the score. It was the first long ball of the season for the 30-year-old, who has been filling in for Michael Brantley (wrist) after he was hit by a pitch Saturday.
Apr 3 2021Diaz went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in Saturday's 9-1 win over the A's. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seeing his first action of the season and getting the start at third base, Diaz was a key cog in the Astros' offensive explosion Saturday. The veteran utility player is looking to rebound after posting career lows in batting average (.241) and OBP (.254) in 2020, albeit in only 59 plate appearances, and Diaz could be right back in the lineup Sunday in left field if Michael Brantley (wrist) is held out after being hit by a pitch Saturday.
Mar 26 2021Diaz (hamstring) will bat ninth as the designated hitter in Friday's spring game against the Marlins, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old hasn't seen game action since March 17 due to hamstring tightness, but he'll return to the lineup for Friday's contest. Diaz shouldn't have an issue being ready for Opening Day if he's cleared to play in the field within the next few days.
Mar 24 2021Diaz won't play in Wednesday's spring game against the Nationals due to hamstring tightness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dusty Baker said that Diaz should be able to play Thursday after being held out Wednesday, and the issue isn't expected to impact the 30-year-old's availability for Opening Day. Diaz has appeared in 11 Grapefruit League games and has slashed .313/.376/.438 with two doubles, two RBI, two runs, five walks and two strikeouts.
Mar 11 2021Diaz started at third base and went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored in Wednesday's spring game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has filled his usual role this spring, playing first base (three games), shortstop (two) and third base (two) over seven Grapefruit League contests. With Alex Bregman's hamstring injury lingering and his spring debut undetermined, Diaz could focus on third base in the short term. He's 3-for-10 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored so far in spring training.
Jan 15 2021Diaz signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Astros on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two sides were able to settle on a figure for 2021 after the they were unable to reach an agreement for last season, which led to an arbitration case that was won by Diaz. The 30-year-old missed most of the 2020 campaign due to injury and had a .241/.254/.483 slash line in 59 plate appearances. He's mostly been a bench piece or injury replacement during his two seasons in Houston, but he could have a larger role in 2021 following the departures of George Springer and Michael Brantley.
Oct 7 2020Diaz went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's loss to the Athletics in Game 3 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning off Jesus Luzardo. The 30-year-old managed to knock in Yuli Gurriel to square the game at 4-4. The veteran made the most out of his first postseason start in 2020, as the homer was the first of his postseason career.
Sep 27 2020Diaz went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 6-1 loss to Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz got the start at first base, giving Yuli Gurriel a break from the field. Since returning from a quad injury Sept. 19, Diaz is 3-for-11 with three doubles and two runs scored. With the Astros having clinched a postseason berth, it would not be surprising to see Diaz get another start in Sunday's regular-season finale.
Sep 24 2020Diaz started at designated hitter and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz found himself in the lineup for a struggling Josh Reddick, who was replaced in right field by Kyle Tucker. Diaz has been dealing with injuries of late and played just for the second time in 12 days.
Sep 19 2020Diaz (quadriceps) is starting Saturday against the Diamondbacks, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz didn't appear in any of the Astros' last five games after tweaking his quad last Saturday, but he'll return to action a week after suffering the injury. He should resume his role as one of the team's top reserve options in the infield over the remainder of the regular season.
Sep 13 2020Diaz isn't starting Sunday's game against the Dodgers after tweaking his quad Saturday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz had an effective performance Saturday as he went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, but he apparently didn't escape unscathed. Manager Dusty Baker said that he didn't think the injury would require a stint on the injured list. The Astros have a day off Monday, so he'll get at least one additional day to recover.
Sep 8 2020Diaz is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against Oakland, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros will use the twin bill to give some other bench players some playing time. Jack Mayfield will start at second base and bat ninth in Game 1. Diaz should continue to be the primary Jose Altuve (knee) replacement in the short term.
Sep 5 2020Diaz started at second base and went 1-for-5 with a double in Friday's 6-5 loss to the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz, who had been manning third base for the injured Alex Bregman (hamstring), moved to second base Friday as a replacement for Jose Altuve (knee). Altuve's knee injury is expected to prevent him from playing the rest of the weekend, so Diaz should receive at-bats in Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game. Playing time beyond that depends on how Altuve's knee responds and/or Bregman's pending return.
Sep 4 2020Diaz started at third base Thursday before moving to second when Jose Altuve left with knee discomfort. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz is the primary fill-in at third base for Alex Bregman (hamstring), who is nearing a return. Bregman's return would mean the end to everyday at-bats for Diaz, unless Altuve's injury leads to an extended absence. More will be known after Altuve undergoes an MRI on Friday.
Sep 3 2020Diaz went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Thursday's 8-4 win over the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After returning from a month-long stint on the injured list last Saturday, Diaz clubbed a three-run shot off Lance Lynn to give the Astros a 4-0 lead Thursday. It was his first long ball on the campaign after clubbing nine a year ago. Diaz has seen time at third-base recently, but will likely be playing other positions in the near future with Alex Bregman (hamstring) close to returning.
Aug 30 2020Diaz started at third base and went 0-for-3 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was activated off the injured list prior to the doubleheader but did not appear in the afternoon game. With Alex Bregman (hamstring) facing at least another two weeks of downtime, Diaz should get plenty of at-bats as a fill-in at the hot corner. If Diaz's bat is slow to come around, then manager Dusty Baker could use Jack Mayfield, Abraham Toro or Yuli Gurriel.
Aug 29 2020Diaz (groin) was activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday and will be available for the Astros' doubleheader against the Athletics, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz suffered a right groin strain on Opening Day and is finally back after missing over a month due to the injury. He figures to be Jose Altuve's backup at second base but could also see some time at third base while Alex Bregman (hamstring) is on the injured list.
Aug 28 2020Diaz (groin) could join the Astros on Saturday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz has not played for the Astros since injuring his groin Opening Day, but it appears he is close to returning to action. It remains to be seen what role Diaz will fill when is he activated, but he could serve as Houston's primary third baseman until Alex Bregman (hamstring) is ready to get back on the field.
Aug 15 2020Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that Diaz (groin) is "a week to 10 days away" from rejoining the Astros, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz suffered a groin strain on Opening Day and has been working his way back since. The Astros have returned the likes of George Springer and Yordan Alvarez from the injured list this past week, so Diaz figures to just be a depth option off the bench upon his activation to the big-league roster.
Aug 9 2020Diaz (groin) participated in a batting session and executed agility work Sunday at the Astros alternate training facility in Corpus Christi, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There hasn't been much news about Diaz after he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained groin the second day of the season. He's one of a few roster regulars the Astros are missing. Yordan Alvarez (undisclosed) and George Springer (wrist) are also working back from injury.
Jul 25 2020Diaz said Saturday that his groin strain is between Grade 1 and Grade 2, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's left Friday's game against the Mariners with the injury and landed on the injured list Saturday. It's not exactly clear when he's expected to return, but it sounds as though he could miss a few weeks, which would represent a significant portion of the shortened season. With Yordan Alvarez (undisclosed) still weeks away from game action, the Astros will have to figure out what to do at designated hitter against lefties, which could involve some combination of Kyle Tucker, Abraham Toro or Taylor Jones.
Jul 24 2020Diaz felt a strain in his leg during Friday's win against the Mariners, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz went 1-for-2 with a run in Friday's win, but he was replaced late in the game by Abraham Toro. Manager Dusty Baker revealed after the game that Diaz is being examined Friday night for a leg strain that he felt during the game. Whether the issue impacts the 29-year-old's availability going forward remains to be seen.
Jul 21 2020Diaz could be the Astros' primary designated hitter against lefties at the start of the season, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The spot was expected to belong to Yordan Alvarez, but he's still yet to arrive at camp for undisclosed reasons and has been placed on the injured list. That could open up starts for Kyle Tucker against righties, either as a designated hitter or in left field, giving veteran Michael Brantley the chance to rest his legs. As a right-handed hitter, Diaz makes more sense for the role against southpaws, though it's worth noting that he has some pretty significant reverse splits over the course of his four-year career, posting an 89 wRC+ with the platoon advantage and a 117 wRC+ without it. The Astros will reveal their plans for the job on Opening Day, as they'll face lefty Marco Gonzales.
Jul 5 2020Diaz (shoulder) is on the field for team workouts Sunday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was absent from workouts the past two days due to shoulder soreness that cropped up from sleeping on his shoulder wrong, but his quick return confirms it to be a minor issue. Diaz will be the primary reserve option across all four infield spots for the Astros in 2020.
Jul 4 2020Diaz was held out of workouts Friday and Saturday with shoulder soreness, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Dusty Baker said Saturday that Diaz slept on his shoulder wrong, which led to his absence from workouts for several days. However, the 29-year-old is expected to resume activities within the coming days. Diaz will be the primary backup at all four infield positions if he can remain healthy heading into the regular season.
Mar 21 2020Diaz batted .167 (4-for-24) with three extra-base hits, three RBI, three runs scored and was hit by pitch twice over 11 spring games. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz returns to Houston as the team's utility infielder, after he was limited to 69 games due to injuries in 2019. If healthy, Diaz will be the primary backup at all four infield positions and can play left field if needed. He will also be the leading choice for a pinch hitter from the right side of the plate.
Feb 19 2020Diaz will make $2.6 million this season after winning his arbitration case, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz struggled to find a rhythm during his first season in Houston because of different trips to the injured list due to hamstring tightness and dizziness spells. The 29-year-old finished the year hitting .271/.356/.467 with 40 RBI and 36 runs scored throughout 247 plate appearances. Diaz is expected to open the season where he left off, as a valuable utility infielder who is a valuable pinch-hit option due in part to his superior plate discipline, tallying 26 walks compared to only 28 strikeouts in 2019.
Oct 11 2019Diaz could earn a start against Yankees lefty James Paxton in the ALCS, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz didn't start any of the five games in the ALDS against the Rays but received three plate appearances off the bench, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. He'd likely start in left field if he's in the lineup, pushing Michael Brantley to right and Josh Reddick to the bench. The Yankees haven't announced their rotation plans yet, but Paxton started the first game of the ALDS and is likely to do so again in the ALCS.
Sep 25 2019Diaz started at third base and went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was a late addition to the lineup after the Astros scratched shortstop Carlos Correa with what was described as lower-back tightness. Alex Bregman moved to short while Diaz took Bregman's usual spot at third base. Houston manager AJ Hinch downplayed Correa's injury, but it's likely Diaz will be a regular in the starting lineup over the final week of the season.
Sep 22 2019Diaz went 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 13-5 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz's three-run homer in the sixth inning was his eighth of the season and first since Aug. 2. The 29-year-old infielder owns a .794 OPS as a very strong depth option for Houston.
Sep 21 2019Diaz started at first base for Yuli Gurriel (illness) and went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 6-4 win over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gurriel was a late scratch from the lineup due to a stomach illness, paving the way for Diaz to make his 20th start at first base. Diaz is slashing .259/.332/.430 over 64 games during what has been an injury-marred season.
Sep 9 2019Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a run Sunday in the Astros' 21-1 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz was one of seven Astros to produce multiple hits and contributed one of the team's franchise-record 11 two-baggers on the afternoon. The 29-year-old drew a second straight start at first base in the series finale, but he'll likely shift over to the hot corner within the next few days since Yuli Gurriel (hamstring) isn't expected to miss much more time.
Sep 8 2019Diaz started at first base for a second straight game and went 1-for-2 with two walks in Saturday's 2-1 win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Diaz will fill in for the injured Yuli Gurriel, who suffered a hamstring injury Thursday and will be out through at least Sunday. Diaz is expected to be the primary fill-in while Gurriel recovers.
Sep 2 2019Diaz started at first base in place of the injured Yuli Gurriel (elbow) and went 1-for-3 with a double in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.
Aug 31 2019Diaz started at third base and went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Friday's 7-4 win over Toronto.

Jul 24 2018Diaz is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Twins, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. It certainly seems that Lourdes Gurriel, who was activated from the disabled list Sunday and has started the last three games, has passed Diaz on the organizational depth chart at shortstop. Diaz is hitting .289/.304/.489 with two home runs in 15 games (45 at-bats) this month, so the Jays should still find some playing time for him, but don't expect him to play every day going forward.
Jul 24 2018Diaz was unavailable Tuesday with a left thumb injury and is considered day-to-day, the Associated Press reports. It was a bit odd that Diaz had missed two straight games, as he is hitting .289/.304/.489 with two home runs in 15 games (45 at-bats) this month, so the fact he is dinged up clears things up. Lourdes Gurriel is the hottest hitter on the team, so when Diaz is ready to return, he will likely compete primarily with Devon Travis and Yangervis Solarte for at-bats in the short term.
Jul 23 2018Diaz is not in the starting lineup versus Minnesota on Monday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz went 0-for-3 during Sunday's series finale against Baltimore after picking up six hits during the first two games of the series. He will get a day off while Lourdes Gurriel draws a start at shortstop for Monday's tilt.
Jul 20 2018Diaz went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Friday's 8-7 extra-inning win over the Orioles. The four hits were a season high for Diaz, who popped his ninth homer of the year in the third inning off Dylan Bundy to get the Jays' offense rolling. His .252/.287/.419 slash line through 71 games isn't particularly impressive, though, and is right in line with his .259/.290/.392 performance in 2017 with the Cards, so it seems unlikely Diaz is in store for a big second-half turnaround.
Jul 13 2018Diaz is not in the lineup against Boston on Friday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz will retreat to a spot on the pine after going 0-for-2 with a pair of strikeouts during Thursday's loss. In his place, Lourdes Gurriel is set to start at shortstop and bat second.
Jul 8 2018Diaz is out of the lineup Sunday against the Yankees.Manager John Gibbons' decision to open up an everyday role in the middle infield for Lourdes Gurriel has proven detrimental to Diaz and Devon Travis, both of whom have received more frequent benchings to accommodate the rookie. Diaz will sit for the second time in four games after hitting his eighth home run of the season Saturday in the Blue Jays' 8-5 loss.
Jul 3 2018Diaz is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Mets.Diaz will sit for the first time since returning from an ankle injury June 1. Lourdes Gurriel will get the start at shortstop.
Jun 24 2018Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three runs in the Blue Jays' 7-6 win over the Angels on Sunday. It was a big performance from the 27-year-old shortstop, who scored three of Toronto's seven runs and launched his seventh long ball of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning. It's still been a struggle on the whole offensively this year for Diaz, as his .239/.277/.406 slash line is comfortably lagging behind his career marks of .273/.325/.446.
Jun 1 2018Diaz (ankle) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Friday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports. He has been out since early May with the ankle injury, and hit just .216/.273/.431 with six home runs in 102 at-bats before landing on the DL. Gio Urshela will remain with the big club even after this activation. Diaz should enter into a crowded infield rotation, getting starts at shortstop while also getting spelled at time by Yangervis Solarte or Urshela.
May 28 2018Diaz (ankle) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A New Hampshire on Monday, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Diaz, who has been sidelined for most of May with an ankle injury, was deemed ready for a rehab stint after getting through his running progression with no issues. Given the length of his absence, the shortstop will likely need to appear in multiple minor-league rehab games before the Blue Jays feel comfortable bringing him back, leaving his possible return date up in the air. Gio Urshela will continue to fill in at shortstop until Diaz is back to full health. Troy Tulowitzki (heel) is set to begin a running program Monday and could return shortly after Diaz, which will create a bit of a logjam in the middle of the Blue Jays' infield.
May 19 2018Diaz (ankle) has begun a running progression and could begin a rehab assignment late next week, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. He is now running and hitting and will be reassessed before potentially beginning a rehab assignment in about a week. Given that timetable, he could return in late May or early June. Gio Urshela and Richard Urena are splitting time at shortstop while Diaz and Troy Tulowitzki (heel) are on the disabled list. Tulowitzki continues to make progress and could return shortly after Diaz, which will complicate matters in the Blue Jays' infield.
May 15 2018Diaz (ankle) began a hitting progression Tuesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz continues to ramp up his activity as he slowly works his way back from a sprained ankle. He also began running lightly. While Diaz is making solid progress in his recovery, the 27-year-old remains without a timetable for his return. For now, Richard Urena and Giovanny Urshela will continue to man shortstop in his stead.
May 12 2018Diaz (ankle) has resumed throwing and will begin hitting next week, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz was placed on the disabled list earlier this week after leaving Sunday's contest in Tampa Bay due to a left ankle sprain. After taking a few days off to rest, Diaz is back on the field and is set to participate in some running and hitting drills early next week. The Blue Jays have yet to describe a specific timetable for his return, but he will be eligible to come off the DL on Friday.
May 8 2018Diaz was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain Tuesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Fortunately, X-rays on Diaz's ankle came back clean, but he'll require a stint on the disabled list nonetheless. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined as a result of this injury, though the earliest he can return from the DL is May 18. Richard Urena will replace him on the active roster while Lourdes Gurriel will serve as the primary replacement at shortstop in the interim.
May 6 2018Diaz exited Sunday's game against the Rays in the top of the fifth inning with an apparent left ankle injury, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz sustained the injury while running out an RBI infield single, with the shortstop seemingly turning his ankle upon touching the outside of the bag and immediately falling to the infield in pain. Per Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE, Diaz was carted off the field, suggesting that more than a day-to-day injury may be in play. The Blue Jays will presumably evaluate Diaz in the locker room and issue an update on his condition after the game.
May 6 2018X-rays on the left ankle of DIaz -- who exited Sunday's game in the fifth inning -- came back negative, but the shortstop will be sent for an MRI.The Blue Jays are referring to the injury as a sprain for now, but have decided to send Diaz for a precautionary MRI to learn more about the injury. With a team day off Monday, consider Diaz day-to-day heading into Tuesday's series opener against Seattle.
May 5 2018Diaz went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Rays. The homer was his sixth of the season and second in as many days. Despite his current power display, Diaz hasn't had a multi-hit game since April 17, dragging his slash line down to .196/.257/.412 on the season. Once his .173 BABIP begins regressing back towards his .285 career mark, however, Diaz's overall numbers should rise.
May 3 2018Diaz went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Thursday against the Indians.Diaz blasted his fifth home run of the season in the eighth inning off Adam Plutko and was one of the few bright spots for the Blue Jays in the second game of a Thursday double-header. Diaz has batted an ugly .191/.255/.383 despite only a 15.8 strikeout rate, caused at least in part by a 20.7 infield flyball rate. That has plagued him throughout both his minor and major league career, so there should be limited expectation that it can be corrected. As a result, his performance will be hurt and he could be in line to lose playing time with Josh Donaldson returning to the lineup.
May 3 2018Diaz is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against Cleveland, Mike Wilner of BlueJaysTalk reports.Diaz will retreat to the bench after making six straight starts, though he could be in line for a reduced role now that Josh Donaldson (shoulder) is back from the disabled list. Through 27 appearances this season, Diaz is hitting just .191/.242/.360 with four home runs and 10 RBI. Manager John Gibbons will likely try to keep Lourdes Gurriel and Yangervis Solarte in the regular lineup, so unless Diaz begins to figure things out at the plate, he could be in store for more of a reserve role moving forward.
Apr 26 2018Diaz is out of the lineup against Boston on Thursday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz will return to the bench after going 0-for-7 with one run scored over the first two games of this series. In his absence, Lourdes Gurriel will start at shortstop and Devon Travis at second base.
Apr 22 2018Diaz is out of the lineup Sunday against the Yankees, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.Since homering in back-to-back games April 11 and 13, Diaz has fallen into a 4-for-23 rut at the plate, dropping his season line to .213/.262/.443 over 65 plate appearances. That's still a better slash line than double-play partner Devon Travis' (.149/.216/.170), but both players' starting roles in the middle infield seem to be at risk following the Friday promotion of Lourdes Gurriel from Double-A New Hampshire. Gurriel will pick up his third straight start Sunday and can play both middle-infield spots, so he'll afford manager John Gibbons an attractive alternative if neither Travis nor Diaz are able to rebound from their poor starts to the season.
Apr 13 2018Diaz went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, two runs and a steal in Toronto's 8-4 win over Cleveland on Friday. It was the second straight game with a long ball for the 27-year-old shortstop, who brought his average from .206 to .237 with this multi-hit performance and now boasts an impressive .605 slugging percentage through 38 at-bats. If Diaz can recapture the magic of his All-Star 2016 with St. Louis that saw him slash .300/.369/.510 in 404 at-bats he'd be a more-than-viable fantasy shortstop, so hopefully his recent hot streak is a sign he's on his way to doing so in his first year in Toronto.
Apr 7 2018Diaz (back) will start and shortstop and bat seventh for Saturday's game against the Rangers, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz was expected to return to the Blue Jays' lineup Friday but manager John Gibbons opted to give him an additional day of rest following Tuesday's back spasms. Yangervis Solarte will shift to third base and move Josh Donaldson back to designated hitting for Saturday's game.
Apr 6 2018Diaz (back) will not be in Friday's lineup against the Rangers, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet.ca reports.Though Diaz was expected to return for the series opener, manager John Gibbons will give the shortstop another day of rest after he exited Tuesday's contest with back spasms. In his place, Yangervis Solarte will draw another start at the shortstop position and bat cleanup. Consider Diaz day-to-day ahead of Saturday's affair.
Apr 6 2018Diaz is expected to be back in the lineup Friday against the Rangers, the Toronto Sun reports.Diaz was pulled from Tuesday's game against the White Sox with back spasms and sat out Wednesday's game as well. The issue wasn't thought to be a major one, though, so he's expected to be back in action Friday, barring setbacks.
Apr 4 2018Diaz (back) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Diaz was removed from Tuesday's game due to back spasms and will remain sidelined for the series finale while Gift Ngoepe fills in at short. Looking ahead, Diaz will receive another day off due to Toronto's scheduled break Thursday before the clubs begins a series against the Rangers. Consider Diaz day-to-day for the time being.
Apr 3 2018Diaz exited Tuesday's game against the White Sox with back spasms, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.Diaz showed discomfort after hitting a single in the bottom of the sixth inning and did not retake the field in the seventh. Gift Ngoepe took over at shortstop for the Blue Jays, while Diaz should be considered day-to-day until he is evaluated further.
Apr 1 2018Diaz is out of the lineup Sunday against the Yankees.Though he'll give way to Gift Ngoepe on Sunday, Diaz looks set to act as the team's primary shortstop while Troy Tulowitzki (ankle) is on the 60-day disabled list. Though Diaz delivered a stellar campaign as a rookie with the Cardinals in 2016, he took a dramatic step back last season and hasn't recovered since moving to Toronto over the winter. Diaz has followed up an underwhelming spring training with an 0-for-9 start at the dish to begin the current campaign.
Mar 26 2018Diaz is projected to receive the starting nod at shortstop over Yangervis Solarte in the Blue Jays' season opener Thursday against the Yankees, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. The two players have been competing in spring training for the gig since Troy Tulowitzki was officially ruled out for the start of the season in mid-March due to a bone spur in his heel. There haven't been any reports that Tulowitzki is close to playing in rehab games, so with an extended absence potentially on tap, Diaz and Solarte could both end up seeing semi-regular starts early on in the season. Diaz presumably has the leg up on Solarte due to his superior spring at the plate, but neither player has been particularly effective during Grapefruit League action. Manager John Gibbons could end up riding the hot bat at the position until Tulowitzki is available, affording Diaz little job security to begin the campaign.
Dec 1 2017The Cardinals traded Diaz to the Blue Jays on Friday in exchange for minor-league outfielder J.B. Woodman, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Paul DeJong's emergence at shortstop for St. Louis made Diaz expendable, but he's landed in a good spot -- on a Blue Jays team desperately in need of a boost in the middle infield. Diaz may never get back to 2016 levels, but his contact ability and power should play up better in Rogers Centre.
Oct 1 2017Diaz left Sunday's game with a strained left hamstring, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. After emerging as one of the big surprises of the 2016 campaign, Diaz's demotion to Triple-A and prolonged stay in the minor leagues this season raise questions about the Cards' long-term plans for him. Paul DeJong usurped Diaz on the organizational depth chart, and it's reasonable to think that a utility role may be in Diaz's future if he remains in St. Louis.
Oct 1 2017Diaz exited Sunday's game against the Brewers early with an apparent injury, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.Diaz appeared to tweak his hammy while attempting to beat out a groundball in the bottom of the second inning. He was replaced by Greg Garcia between innings, which will put a close on Diaz's 2017 campaign. We'll have to wait and see what the specifics of his injury are.
Sep 20 2017Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Diaz had been toiling with the Redbirds since June 28, when he was sent down to work on refining his swing. He wrapped up his Triple-A tenure with a .253/.305/.388 line over 46 games, with both his batting average and OPS actually checking in lower than his production in those categories during his 71 games with the big-league club prior to his demotion. He's likely to see sporadic playing time for the balance of the regular season, as standout rookie Paul DeJong is firmly entrenched in Diaz's old everyday shortstop role.
Aug 15 2017Diaz recently asked for and was granted permission to begin working at second and third base in addition to shortstop at Triple-A Memphis, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. "I think versatility for most players is valuable," said Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. "Now that he's been down there awhile and adjusting to it, [we] thought it was time to create some flexibility for him."Diaz's request was essentially borne out of self-preservation, considering that rookie Paul DeJong has a stranglehold on the shortstop position in the majors for the foreseeable future. Diaz worked at multiple spots in the infield during his playing days in Cuba, but had focused on shortstop during his time in the Cardinals organization. Sent down to Memphis back on June 28 to refine his swing, the 27-year-old has been rather ordinary with the Redbirds, slashing .252/.292/.396 with four home runs and 20 RBI.
Aug 4 2017Diaz is 13-for-33 with two home runs and eight RBI over his last eight games with Triple-A Memphis, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. The 27-year-old had been mired in a 3-for-26 slump prior to that stretch, so the hot streak is certainly a welcome sight. He's boosted his minor-league line to .276/.300/.447 over that span, but he doesn't currently have a clear path back to the majors with Paul DeJong having taken a firm hold of the everyday shortstop job in Diaz's absence.
Jul 25 2017Diaz exited Tuesday's game with Triple-A Memphis after being hit by a pitch on his hand, Derrick Goold of the St. Loius Post-Dispatch reports.Diaz was plunked on the hand during his at-bat and was subsequently removed from the game. He'll undergo an examination on his hand, at which point we'll have more information on the severity of the injury.
Jul 22 2017Diaz (personal), who went 2-for-4 in his return to Triple-A Memphis' win over Las Vegas on Friday, will continue working exclusively at shortstop for the time being, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. There's been some talk of a potential future utility role for Diaz, but general manager John Mozeliak has made it clear that he'll remain at his natural position for now. The Cuban shortstop was sent down to Triple-A Memphis unexpectedly in late June to refine his plate mechanics and his slashing .240/.250/.360 over 12 games with the Redbirds.
Jul 19 2017Diaz (personal), who is slashing .217/.229/.348 through 11 games with Triple-A Memphis, continues to work closely with Redbirds hitting coach Mark Budaska, Alaina Getzenberg of MLB.com reports.Much like teammate Randal Grichuk, Diaz was unexpectedly sent to Memphis, although the latter's serviceable .260/.293/.396 line at the time made his demotion even more surprising. At the time, the Cuban shortstop was struggling with pitch selection and dealing with thumb and ankle ailments, which certainly may have played a part in his struggles. Budaska, who also worked with Grichuk during his Redbirds tenure in late May and early June, has been focusing on helping Diaz improve his plate discipline and pitch recognition. While his numbers thus far haven't exactly validated the amount of work the two have put in, Diaz did post a pair of multi-hit efforts over his most recent three games before leaving the team until next Friday to tend to a personal matter.
Jul 7 2017Diaz is slashing .188/.182/.375 over his first seven games with Triple-A Memphis. The 26-year-old shortstop has provided some pop in the form of three doubles, a homer and seven RBI, but he's otherwise struggled and has yet to draw a walk. Diaz was somewhat surprisingly sent down to Memphis on June 28 despite a respectable .260 average with the big-league club, with the goal presumably being to have him make a few adjustments at the plate and return as a more effective hitter. A similar approach seems to have worked wonders for outfielder Randal Grichuk, but Diaz actually seems to have regressed in the early going of his minor-league stint.
Jun 27 2017Diaz is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Diaz will head to the bench for a breather after appearing in 13 straight games for the Cardinals. Paul DeJong will slide over to shortstop in his stead, while Greg Garcia gets the start at second base.
Jun 24 2017Diaz is not in the lineup Saturday against the Pirates, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Diaz is just 1-for-8 (.125) with three strikeouts over his last three games, so he'll head to the bench for a breather. Paul DeJong will slide over to start at shortstop for Diaz, allowing Greg Garcia to notch a start at the keystone.
Jun 21 2017Diaz is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Phillies.Diaz will be replaced at short by Paul DeJong, who is batting eighth in the order for Wednesday's contest. This marks the first day off for Diaz since game one of the doubleheader against Milwaukee on June 13.
Jun 15 2017Diaz went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs scored during Wednesday's loss to Milwaukee. It isn't surprising that Diaz is struggling to repeat last season's numbers. He broke into the league with little pedigree and also cooled in the second half following a thumb injury. However, the shortstop has provided respectable numbers of late with a .300/.317/.550 slash line, two homers, four RBI and eight runs through his past 11 games.
Jun 13 2017Diaz is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers.Greg Garcia will draw the start at shortstop, hitting eighth against rookie right-hander Brandon Woodruff, who is making his big-league debut. Look for Diaz to get back in the mix in the nightcap against righty Jimmy Nelson.
Jun 10 2017Diaz went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in Friday's 3-2 win over the Phillies.Diaz hadn't gone deep since May 1, a span of 31 games. The Cuban shortstop has hit safely in six of his last seven games and has compiled five extra-base hits (four doubles, one homer) in his first eight contest of June. While the 26-year-old's current .262 average represents a 38-point drop from the .300 figure he mustered in his rookie campaign, Diaz's contact rate has seen a one-percent boost to 86 percent, while his strikeout rate remains a solid 13.7 percent.
Jun 6 2017Diaz is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Reds, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.Diaz only has four hits in the past week, so he'll get a night off after a string of ten straight starts. Paul DeJong will move over to shortstop to fill the void, while Greg Garcia enters the lineup to complete the middle infield.
Jun 5 2017Diaz went 2-for-3 with an RBI ground-rule double, another two-bagger and a walk in Sunday's 7-6 loss to the Cubs. The Cuban shortstop snapped an RBI drought Sunday, as he hadn't driven in a run since May 10. His multi-hit effort was also his first since May 27, but Diaz does now have a modest three-game hitting streak to start June. After a sluggish April, Diaz is slashing .302/.353/.396 over the last month (27 games).
May 26 2017Diaz is not in the lineup Friday against the Rockies.Diaz hasn't sat out since May 3, so he'll get a night off Friday. Greg Garcia will take over duties at shortstop for the evening.
May 25 2017Diaz went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and a run in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Dodgers. The surging shortstop extended his current hitting streak to a modest four games and has now racked up four doubles in his last three contests. Although he's hit only one home run in May after smacking four in the season's opening month, Diaz's line drive rate has shot up from April's 9.6 percent to 23.4 percent, a pivotal factor in his .313/.364/.425 line over the last 19 games.
May 22 2017Diaz went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and three runs in Sunday's 8-3 win over the Giants.Diaz is enjoying a resurgent month at the plate in May after slashing just .217/.234/.391 in the season's opening month. Factoring in Sunday's multi-hit effort, his eighth of May, he's now slashing .315/.354/.411 with four doubles, a homer, seven RBI, five walks and nine runs over 79 plate appearances during the current month.
May 11 2017Diaz went 2-for-5 with an RBI single in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Marlins, snapping an 0-for-14 slump that spanned the previous three gamesThe Cuban shortstop broke out of his funk with his fifth multi-hit game of May. Despite his struggles in the prior three games and another 0-for-4 outing on May 2, Diaz is still hitting .341 with a pair of doubles, one home run, seven RBI and five runs over his first 41 at-bats of the month.
May 5 2017Diaz went 3-for-5 with a double and run in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Brewers.Despite a drop to sixth in the order, Diaz delivered, producing his second multi-hit game over the last three. The young infielder is still underperforming compared to his rookie numbers, but he's now hit safely in nine of his last 12 games and raised his average 22 points to .236 in the process.
May 4 2017Diaz is batting sixth and playing shortstop Thursday against the Brewers. The 26-year-old is off to a slow start at the plate, slashing just .218/.233/.406 across 101 at-bats, prompting manager Mike Matheny to drop him to the bottom third of the batting order for the first time all season. Stephen Piscotty moved up to second in the order for the game. It remains unclear if the Cardinals plan to stick with this order moving forward, though that seems possible at least until Diaz is able to turn it around at the dish.
May 2 2017Diaz went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 7-5 extra-inning loss to the Brewers.Diaz kickstarted the Cardinals' comeback by opening the scoring with a 371-foot shot to left in the fifth off Zach Davies. It was the 26-year-old's first homer since April 22 and marked the ninth time in the last 10 games that he's reached safely. While he boasts excellent strikeout (10.1 percent) and contact rates (90 percent), Diaz's walk rate is a paltry 2.0 percent and he sports an unsustainable .207 BABIP, helping explain his .227 average and ghastly .242 OBP.
Apr 27 2017Diaz is not in the lineup for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays.Diaz managed to go just 1-for-6 in Thursday's first game and has gone 1-for-11 over his last two outings. He'll head to the bench for the Cardinals' second game Thursday while Greg Garcia starts at shortstop.
Apr 22 2017Diaz hit a solo home run in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter during Saturday's win over Milwaukee.Diaz burst onto the scene as a freshman, and he outproduced expectations based on his pedigree. However, he's already up to four home runs and is a key cog for the Cardinals. The risk of a sophomore slump still looms, but more of the same from Diaz could put that concern to rest in a hurry.
Apr 22 2017Diaz is out of Saturday's lineup against the Brewers. He is hitting .239 with three home runs and zero walks through 67 at-bats. Greg Garcia will get the start at shortstop and lead off against righty Chase Anderson.
Apr 20 2017Diaz, who endured an 0-for-18 slump before a pinch-hit infield single Wednesday, studied film of his at-bats from last season and reevaluated his mental approach earlier that day, Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "I think a day off helped a lot," Diaz said. "I reset my mind. I came in early, watched a lot of video from the last year. I just feel good. I have confidence it's going to be better in the next couple of games. You have to trust the process, and keep working."Diaz burst onto the scene last season with a .300/.369/.510 line over 111 games, and he appeared to be on track for more of the same in the early going this season. The 26-year-old boasted a .300 average over his first 40 at-bats of 2017 despite the overall struggles of the Cardinals offense, but he appeared to hit a temporary wall beginning with an April 15 game versus the Yankees. His struggles led to a day off Wednesday, although Diaz eventually contributed to St. Louis' 2-1 victory with the aforementioned pinch single. in Wednesday film study, the shortstop and hitting coach John Mabry pinpointed a narrowing of the hips in Diaz's stance this year when compared to last season -- a factor which potentially was inhibiting his visibility. They also took note of the numbers indicating reduced plate discipline this season, as evidenced by an 18.1 percent increase in Diaz's swing percentage on pitches outside the strike zone. Diaz has now gone 3-for-6 with a double since the temporary pause, so early indications are that the time off may have been just what the doctor ordered.
Apr 19 2017Diaz is out of the Cardinals' lineup for Wednesday's matchup against the Pirates.Diaz is 0-for-16 over the last four games, so Wednesday should provide a nice mental break for the young hitter. Greg Garcia will take over at shortstop.
Apr 12 2017Diaz is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup for Wednesday's game at Washington, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Greg Garcia takes over at shortstop as Diaz gets his first off day of the season. Look for Diaz to continue building off his All-Star-worthy 2016 season upon his return to the lineup.
Apr 11 2017Diaz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Nationals. The 26-year-old is quickly dismissing any idea that his performance last season was a fluke, hitting .278 with three homers, five RBI and six runs scored through his first eight games of 2017. The Cards' offense is struggling out of the gate, but Diaz has been one of the few bright spots in the St. Louis lineup.
Apr 9 2017Diaz went 3-for-5 with four RBI from a solo home run and three-run shot in Saturday's 10-4 victory over the Reds.Diaz has picked up right where he left off last season, as he's now hitting .304 and has racked up a trio of multi-hit efforts in his first five games. Apr 7 2017Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Cubs.Diaz shook off an 0-for-4 outing Tuesday to post his second two-hit effort over the season's first three games. However, he lined out to right field to end the game with Kolten Wong on third base. The 26-year-old has yet to drive in any runs but has a pair doubles and two stolen bases to his credit already.
Apr 3 2017Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double and two stolen bases in Sunday's 4-3 Opening Day win over the Cubs.Diaz and offseason acquisition Dexter Fowler have the look of a lethal 1-2 punch at the top of the Cardinals order, and it was the former who particularly stood out Sunday. The pair of swipes was especially noteworthy, considering Diaz was just 4-for-8 in steal attempts during his rookie campaign and never topped six stolen bases in his minor-league career. The 26-year-old burst onto the scene in 2016 in the wake of Jhonny Peralta's spring training thumb injury and provided a .300/.369/.510 line that included 28 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs and 65 RBI. With a year of seasoning at the big-league level now under his belt, 20-plus homers and 100 RBI look to be realistic goals for the blossoming star in 2017.
Mar 9 2017Diaz went 2-for-2 with an RBI double, another two-bagger and two runs in Wednesday's 9-3 Grapefruit League victory over the Nationals.Diaz boosted his explosive spring stat line to .474/.450/.579 with the effort, with the pair of doubles representing his first extra-base hits of spring. The Cardinals' everyday shortstop heading into the regular season, Diaz will be a coveted fantasy asset in all formats, although it remains to be seen if the 17 home runs he blasted in 2016 were an outlier; prior to last season, Diaz had not posted more than 10 round-trippers in any of his five minor league stops.
Feb 27 2017Diaz went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, sacrifice fly and one run in Sunday's 7-4 Grapefruit League win over the Marlins.Diaz brought home Eric Fryer with his fourth-inning sac fly after having been driven in himself by Yadier Molina's second-inning two-bagger. Sep 26 2016Diaz is not in the lineup Monday against the Reds.Since returning from the disabled list earlier in the month, Diaz has been played a bit less than before the injury, which could be in part to ease his thumb back into action, but could also be impacted by his .172 batting average since coming back. He also notched his 26th double, boosting his slash line to .307/.372/.523. The 26-year-old rookie has emerged as one of the National League's best-hitting shortstops this season, showing surprising power along with good contact skills.
Sep 15 2016Diaz is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants.Jedd Gyorko gets the nod at shortstop Thursday against San Francisco's Johnny Cueto in place of Diaz. The recently activated Diaz had played in three straight games since coming off the DL on Monday after missing more than a month with a fractured thumb. Diaz could return to the lineup Friday when the Cardinals face left-hander Matt Moore.
Sep 13 2016Diaz hit his 15th homer, a two-run shot, in a 2-for-2 game with a walk Tuesday against the Cubs.In his first start back in the lineup after missing 37 games with a thumb injury, Diaz looked healthy as ever. Despite the time he has missed, Diaz still ranks 16th among major league shortstops with 15 home runs. His power has been one of the biggest surprises of the season, and if he can keep bringing it in September, it could be just the catalyst the Cardinals need to survive the National League Wild Card race.
Sep 13 2016Diaz is back in the starting lineup Tuesday, batting eighth and playing shortstop.Diaz was activated off the disabled list Sunday, but this will be his first start since coming off the disabled list. It's unclear how the Cardinals plan to distribute playing time down the stretch considering the recent success Greg Garcia, Jedd Gyorko, and Kolten Wong have all been having, but that should become clearer as the month rolls along.

If all continues to go well down on the farm, he could be activated from the DL at some point this week to rejoin the Cardinals. Diaz's return would likely result in Greg Garcia seeing his at-bats fall by the wayside.
Sep 2 2016Diaz (thumb) took batting practice Friday, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Manager Mike Matheny said that Diaz may head to Double-A Springfield for a rehab assignment in the near future, making a mid-September return possible. Aug 29 2016Diaz (thumb) is expected to face live pitching in the near future, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Diaz's appointment to track his rehab progress went well, so he'll soon add hitting to his current training regimen. He'll likely return to Florida and continue his rehab process. At this point, a timeframe for his eventual return isn't available. However, the club should have a better idea of when Diaz will come off the DL once he begins hitting.

Depending on how his visit with the hand specialist goes Monday, he could be cleared to resume swinging a bat in the near future.
Aug 15 2016Diaz (thumb) won't be re-evaluated for another two weeks to see if he can be cleared for baseball activities, ending his chances of returning in August, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Diaz's rehab process appears to be coming along slowly, with a September return now being the earliest possibility. More on his status should come in a couple weeks when he's re-evaluated. IUn the meantime, St. Louis should continue to roll with Greg Garcia as the primary shortstop.

Jul 31 2016Diaz left Sunday's game in the first inning after he was struck on the thumb by a pitch, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Diaz will exit in the first inning, so it will be a tough break for any fantasy owners utilizing the shortstop Sunday. His removal will shuffle the entire defensive alignment, with Tommy Pham effectively moving into center field. Look for the Cardinals to update the status of Diaz when more information becomes available, but for the time being, consider him questionable for Tuesday's series opener in Cincinnati.
Jul 30 2016Diaz is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins. It seems manager Mike Matheny has decided Diaz could use a little mental rest following his first career three-strikeout game Friday. Diaz should be back in there Sunday, looking to finish off his .299/.375/.505 month of July on a high note. Greg Garcia will start at shortstop in his absence.
Jul 28 2016Diaz went 2-for-5 with a double, a homer, three RBI and two runs in Thursday's win over Miami. The slick-hitting rookie keeps on impressing, as his two-run homer in the third got the Cardinals started and his RBI double in the fifth provided a key insurance run. The 25-year-old Cuban hit only 13 homers in the minors last year, but he now has 14 in 94 MLB games and a batting average that he's holding solidly above .300. If not for Trevor Story, Diaz would be getting a lot more attention, but his fantasy owners certainly know what he's been about this year.

Jul 1 2016Diaz (face) is back in the lineup Friday, batting second and starting at shortstop.Diaz was involved in a scary instance Monday when he fouled a ball off his face, which caused severe swelling around his eye. Jun 30 2016Diaz (face) is not in the lineup Thursday against the Royals.Diaz will now miss his third straight game after taking a foul ball off his face in Monday's contest. There's no indication that the situation will require a DL stint, but it's possible the 25-year-old remains sidelined for a couple more games. Greg Garcia will draw another start at shortstop Thursday and figures to continue filling in however long Diaz is out.
Jun 29 2016Diaz (face) is still out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.Diaz left Monday's game after fouling a ball off his face in the ninth inning and subsequently missed Tuesday's game after going to the hospital Monday night for additional tests. Jun 14 2016Diaz is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Astros.Diaz gets his first day off in the month of June after starting 12 games in a row dating back to late May. Greg Garcia will get a rare start at short Tuesday and bat eighth in the order against Houston.
May 29 2016Diaz is out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals.Diaz, who has batted second in the order in 10 straight contests, will rest Sunday in favor of Greg Garcia at shortstop. Diaz has been a staple in the St. Louis infield this season, but with tough right Stephen Strasburg on the hill for the opposing Nationals, manager Mike Matheny will look to get as many left-handed bats in his lineup as possible. That will come at the cost of a start for Diaz, who sports an impressive .900 OPS on the season.
May 19 2016Diaz is batting second in Thursday's lineup against the Rockies.Diaz hasn't missed a beat since making his major league debut this season, holding a .376/.403/.648 slash line with six home runs and 20 RBI, and it seems the Cardinals decided to reward him with a move up in the batting order. The shortstop's already-high value is boosted by this move, as he'll now be in line for more run-scoring opportunities hitting in front of Matt Holliday and Stephen Piscotty.
May 5 2016Diaz is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies. With Diaz getting a day off, Ruben Tejada will man shortstop. The rookie has cooled down a bit from his torrid start to the season, but he still owns a .381/.422/.679 slash line, with five homers, 16 RBI, 21 runs and a stolen base. He's in no immediate danger of losing playing time.

He's slowed down some in the last week, going just 2-for-15 in his last five games, even still the 25-year-old shortstop is hitting an impressive .403/.439/.727 through his first 77 big league at-bats.
Apr 30 2016Diaz is out of the lineup Saturday against the Nationals.Ruben Tejada will get the start at shortstop and hit seventh, as Diaz starts on the bench after going hitless in his last two games. Diaz is clearly the best offensive option at shortstop for the Cardinals while Jhonny Peralta is out, but Tejada is the superior defensive option, so it will be interesting to see how the team handles their playing time going forward.
Apr 27 2016Diaz extended his hitting streak to seven games Wednesday by going 2-for-4 with his fourth homer, a walk, two RBI and three runs against the Diamondbacks. He's been absolutely explosive whenever given the chance to hit this year, as Diaz now owns a simply ridiculous .468/.500/.823 batting line that would make even Barry Bonds jealous. Of course, there's essentially no chance he can keep up anything even vaguely resembling this -- we're talking about a guy who put up a .278/.339/.445 line across two stops in the minors last season, and once Jhonny Peralta (hand) is ready to return around midseason, it's hard to see where Diaz plays. That said, there's no reason not to pick him up and enjoy the ride right now.
Jul 8 2015Diaz was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Wednesday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Injuries limited Diaz to just 47 games last year, and the 24-year-old has struggled to a .235/.292/.344 batting line in 67 games with Double-A Springfield so far this season. There was hype around Diaz and his skillset when he signed with St. Louis, but the club is hoping the $4-plus million remaining on his contract deters another team from plucking him off waivers.
Jun 11 2014Diaz (shoulder) is expected to return to the active roster for Double-A Springfield by the end of the week, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Diaz was hitting well before heading to the disabled list in late April with shoulder problems, something likely caused by fatigue of not having played competitive baseball in over 18 months before signing. If he can stay healthy and keep hitting he may find himself taking over for Pete Kozma at shortstop for the Triple-A Memphis affiliate.
Apr 24 2014Diaz continues to hit well for Double-A Springfield, hitting his third home run of the season while going 2-for-5 and driving in two in Wednesday's game. The Cuban defector is now hitting .297/.313/.547 and despite cooling off as of late has still been fairly consistent. He'll need to work on his plate discipline more if he wants to find time with the major league club as he has just one walk and 16 strikeouts in 64 at-bats this season.
Apr 11 2014Diaz was 4-for-7 Thursday with two doubles and a home run for Double-A Springfield.Diaz only has 24 at-bats this season, but he's batting .458/.440/.833 and doesn't look like he's being challenged. If he keeps this up he could be headed to Triple-A Memphis shortly.
Mar 23 2014Diaz was optioned to Double-A Springfield on Sunday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Given Diaz's age (23) and experience in Cuba, it seemed at least possible the Cardinals could send him to Triple-A to begin the season, but Diaz will start at Double-A. He'll continue the process of adjusting to the American game there, but once he's comfortable, Diaz will likely move up to the next rung on the minor league ladder.
Mar 21 2014Diaz is penciled in to the eighth spot in the Cardinals lineup against Washington, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Diaz will get his first taste of major league pitching facing Gio Gonzalez of the Nationals. If Diaz plays well he could work his way into a bench role later this year but the most likely scenario is a full season of Triple-A.
Mar 20 2014Diaz will play in his first big-league spring training came tomorrow, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Diaz has apparently cleared up his work visa issues and will be able to get a half-dozen games or so in for the Cardinals to evaluate his MLB readiness. With recently signed Jhonny Peralta occupying shortstop for the Cardinals the won't have a big need for Diaz this year at the MLB level.
Mar 16 2014Diaz appeared in his first game in 18 months for the Cardinals' Triple-A club on Saturday going 2-for-4 with a walk as the designated hitter, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Diaz is 23 and will not be able to move to the big-league camp until his work visa is acquired. The Cardinals are hoping that is cleared up later this week.
Mar 10 2014Diaz will not be able to play in any big-league spring games until an issue with his work visa is resolved, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. He is still able to work out with the Cardinals but he will have to return to Mexico to resolve the issue. The Cardinals are eager to get Diaz into some games as he hasn't played competitively in 18 months.
Mar 9 2014Diaz has signed a major league deal with the Cardinals and will report to camp Monday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.Major League Baseball suspended Diaz for falsifying his age when he initially applied for free agency after defecting from Cuba, but he's finally under contract. The 23-year-old is said to have the ability to hit for average and power, and while Jhonny Peralta is locked in at short for now, Diaz will likely be next in line if there is an injury. He could also be an option at second if Kolten Wong falters.
Feb 21 2014The Phillies are among the teams that are interested in signing Diaz, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. The Cardinals, Giants, Blue Jays, Yankees, Braves and Mariners have also expressed interest. Diaz could sign with a club as soon as this weekend.
Feb 20 2014Despite the need for an upgrade at shortstop, the Mets are not in on Diaz, ESPN New York reports.Diaz worked out for the Cardinals on Wednesday and will have an open showcase at Padres camp Thursday. As of now, the Mets are expected to go with Ruben Tejada and remains on the fringers with Stephen Drew. Wherever he signs, Diaz is not expected to need much time in the minors and may be able to help that team sometime this season.
Feb 11 2014Diaz will hold an open showcase on Feb. 20 at the Padres' complex, MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports.Diaz will first be eligible to sign with a team on Feb. 18, after waiting an entire year due to issues surrounding his age. Several teams have already inquired about the 23-year-old, as Diaz is said to have the ability to hit for average and power, and could potentially play several spots in the infield.
