Jun 19 2025The Phillies transferred Nola (ankle/ribs) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for infielderBuddy Kennedy, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. As a result of the transaction, Nola won't be eligible for activation until the first game after the All-Star break, but he had already effectively been ruled out until then anyway. The hurler initially went on the IL back in mid-May with a sprained ankle, but he's now recovering from a stress reaction in his right rib cage.
Jun 10 2025Nola (ankle) will be shut down for at least two weeks after an MRI showed a stress reaction in his right rib cage, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola appears to be past the right ankle sprain that initially sent him to the 15-day injured list, but the new injury he's dealing with could sideline him through the All-Star break. Mick Abel should get an extended run in the Phillies' rotation while Nola is out. The club also has top prospect Andrew Painter lurking at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but Painter is not expected to be a factor with the big club until the second half.
Jun 4 2025Manager Rob Thomson said Wednesday that Nola (ankle) will be shut down from throwing for a couple days due to right side stiffness, Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was slated to throw another bullpen session Thursday as the next step in his recovery from a sprained right ankle, but the Phillies will instead push his next mound session back a few days. Thomson described the right-hander's side injury as "very mild," so it shouldn't impact his return timeline too much.
Jun 1 2025Nola (ankle) threw a bullpen session ahead of Sunday's series finale versus the Brewers, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola is next expected to advance to live batting practice this week, and a minor-league rehab assignment is likely set to follow. The veteran right-hander has been on the injured list with a sprained right ankle since mid-May, but he's on track to re-enter Philadelphia's rotation at some point in mid-June. Although Nola isn't dealing with an injury to his throwing arm, it's possible the Phillies will want him to make more than one rehab start to sharpen up due to his poor 6.16 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 49.2 innings on the season.
May 27 2025Nola (ankle) said Tuesday he will need a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the big-league rotation, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola said he felt something in his sprained right ankle after throwing off a mound and is hopeful he'll be able to throw a higher-intensity bullpen session Thursday. The Phillies have the luxury of being patient with Nola, as Taijuan Walker has a 3.24 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 16.2 innings through four appearances this month. Nola won't be able to return when first eligible, but he could potentially return in the second week of June.
May 25 2025Nola (ankle) isn't expected to resume throwing off a mound until the Phillies return home from their road trip that concludes Sunday in Sacramento, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After landing on the injured list May 16 due to a right ankle sprain, Nola was hopeful to throw a bullpen session this weekend during the Phillies' three-game series versus the Athletics, but it never materialized while he continued to experience some soreness, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Assuming he's still able to get back on the mound within the next few days, Nola's return shouldn't be pushed back too much further, though the right-hander no longer looks to be a candidate to come off the 15-day injured list this Thursday when first eligible. With Nola still working through the ankle injury, Taijuan Walker is expected to make at least one more turn through the Philadelphia rotation.
May 21 2025Nola (ankle) played long toss ahead of Wednesday's game against the Rockies, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies also hope Nola will be able to throw off a mound during their upcoming series against the Athletics, which begins Friday. The veteran right-hander is nursing a sprained right ankle that sent him to the injured list on May 15, and it's still unknown if he'll need a short minor-league rehab assignment before re-entering Philadelphia's rotation. Given that Nola isn't dealing with an injury to his throwing arm, it's possible he'll be ready to return in late May or early June if all goes well in his recovery.
May 16 2025The Phillies placed Nola on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right ankle sprain, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola evidently suffered the injury prior to his start in Cleveland last week, which could at least partly explain why he's coughed up a whopping 13 runs over 8.2 innings in his last two outings. He will be eligible to return May 30, but it's unclear whether he will be ready to go on that date. Mick Abel is making a spot start in Nola's place Sunday versus the Pirates before Taijuan Walker re-enters the rotation.
May 14 2025Nola (1-7) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.2 innings to take the loss in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's performance has taken a drastic turn for the worse lately, as he's allowed 13 runs, including five home runs, over his last 8.2 innings. He looked to be turning a corner in late April and early May, but that progress has been wiped out, with Wednesday's outing standing as his worst of the campaign so far. He's now at a 6.16 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 52:16 K:BB over 49.2 innings over nine starts. Nola is tentatively projected to make his next start at Colorado.
May 10 2025Nola (1-6) took the loss Friday as the Phillies fell 6-0 to the Guardians, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Two of the hits off Nola left the yard -- a solo shot by Kyle Manzardo in the fourth inning and a two-run blast by Angel Martinez in the fifth. It's the fourth time in eight starts that the veteran right-hander has served up multiple homers, but that's nothing new for Nola, who got taken deep 30-plus times in 2023 and 2024. He'll carry a 4.89 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 50:15 K:BB through 46 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Cardinals.
May 3 2025Nola (1-5) earned the win against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out eight over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Nola was in danger of being scratched from Saturday's start after he felt his neck lock up, which led the Phillies to reinstate Ranger Suarez from the 15-day injured list as an emergency option. Nola relayed after the game that the tightness was limited to the right side of his neck, and it didn't appear to bother him all that much as he tossed 109 pitches (69 strikes) over six scoreless frames while generating 12 whiffs and eight groundouts. How Nola's neck responds following Saturday's outing will determine his availability for his next scheduled start against the Guardians next weekend.
Apr 21 2025Nola (0-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola gave up a leadoff homer to Francisco Lindor and a solo shot to Jesse Winker in the second inning. Nola didn't run into any more trouble until the seventh inning when he put two runners on base and was charged with both runs after being removed from the contest. It was his longest outing of the year and just the second time he completed at least six frames. Nola has produced an unsightly 6.43 ERA with a 31:11 K:BB through 28 innings. He's currently lined up for a road start against the Cubs this weekend.
Apr 16 2025Nola (0-4) took the loss Wednesday against the Giants after giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and four walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Having already struggled to begin the season, the veteran right-hander was tagged for four runs on four hits and two walks in the opening inning. More trouble arose in the fourth inning, when the Giants plated two more runs and chased Nola from the game after he threw 99 pitches. Nola could have a tough time improving on his 5.82 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 21.2 innings (four starts) in his next scheduled start, which comes on the road against the Mets early next week, but fantasy managers should stay patient with the one-time All-Star.
Apr 11 2025Nola (0-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and four walks in five innings Friday against the Cardinals. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although the veteran right-hander threw at least five innings in his third straight start and gave up a season-low two runs, he tossed just one clean inning and struggled mightily in a two-run fifth frame while allowing five batters to reach base in the inning. Through 16.1 innings this year, Nola has a shaky 5.51 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 17 punchouts. Fantasy managers should stay patient with the one-time All-Star, who'll look to get into the win column in his next scheduled start in the middle of next week at home against the Giants.
Apr 5 2025Nola (0-2) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with two strikeouts over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola battled against the vaunted Dodgers but was burned by a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo shot in the sixth. The veteran righty managed only nine swinging strikes on 97 pitches and has now yielded eight total runs on four long balls through 11.1 innings this year. He'll carry a 6.35 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB into a road matchup with the Cardinals next weekend.
Mar 30 2025Nola (0-1) took the loss against the Nationals on Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola cruised through three innings before surrendering all five runs on home runs in the fourth and sixth frames. While the veteran remains one of the game's most durable arms, he has allowed 30-plus homers in each of the past two seasons. He'll look to bounce back in a tough matchup against the Dodgers next weekend.
Mar 2 2025Nola struck out two and allowed one hit and no walks over two scoreless innings during Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, the right-hander was focused on commanding his fastball and changeup and completely avoided using his knuckle-curve, which was his most-used pitch last year at 32.9 percent. Opposing batters hit .279 against his changeup in 2024, and turning that into a more reliable offering could help him improve upon the 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 197:50 K:BB he posted across 33 regular-season starts last season.
Sep 29 2024Nola (14-8) picked up the win Sunday against the Nationals, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and zero walks while striking out seven in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola did not save his best for last, surrendering a leadoff home run to Luis Garcia in the opening frame, one of nine hits allowed by the veteran. Nola effectively worked around the traffic on the basepaths, however, limiting the Nationals to just three runs to pick up his 14th win of the season. The 31-year-old Nola was his steady, dependable self yet again for fantasy managers in 2024, pitching to a 3.57 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 197:50 K:BB in 199.1 innings (fifth in MLB). Excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Nola has started 32 or more games in every season since 2018. During that span, he leads MLB in both starts (208) and innings pitched (1264.2), making him one of the most reliable starting pitchers in fantasy.
Sep 23 2024Nola (13-8) earned the win Monday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola pitched into the seventh inning with a six run cushion while having shut out the Cubs through six. He ran into trouble in the inning, failing to record an out while allowing a couple of runs on a walk and three hits, including a couple of doubles. Despite the rocky end to his night, Nola maintained a quality start while cruising to his 13th victory of the season, clinching the first National League East division title for the Phillies since 2011. This marks the fourth-straight season and sixth-straight non-COVID season Nola has started at least 32 games while the 13 wins are the second most of his 10-year career. The veteran righty is in line to start on the final day of the regular season but with the playoffs around the corner, it also wouldn't surprise if the Phillies decide to limit him or hold him back as they finalize their postseason rotation.
Sep 18 2024Nola allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out nine over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Brewers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's lone mistake was a Rhys Hoskins solo home run in the fifth inning. This was Nola's best of four starts so far in September, though he's given up six homers over 21 innings this month. The veteran right-hander is now at a 3.54 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 183:48 K:BB through 188.1 innings over 31 starts. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Cubs.
Sep 13 2024Nola (12-8) took the loss Friday against the Mets, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was cruising early Friday, holding the Mets without a hit through his first four innings. However, things would unravel quickly in the fifth when New York led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Francisco Alvarez launched a three-run homer. Nola would allow a second three-run blast to Brandon Nimmo later in the frame, forcing the Phillies to turn to the bullpen. The 31-year-old Nola has now dropped back-to-back starts, allowing 10 earned runs over 9.1 innings in that span. His ERA now sits at 3.62 on the season with a 1.20 WHIP and 174:47 K:BB across 181.1 innings. Nola will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week on the road in Milwaukee.
Sep 8 2024Nola (12-7) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the Phillies fell 9-5 to the Marlins. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A two-run homer by Connor Norby in the first inning and a solo shot by Jonah Bride in the fifth bookended Nola's shortest outing since June 13. The veteran right-hander has only one win in 10 starts since the All-Star break, posting a 3.45 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 51:18 K:BB through 57.1 innings over that stretch, and the 31-year-old could be running out of steam as the regular season draws to a close. Nola will try to get back in the win column in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Mets.
Sep 1 2024Nola allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over six innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the second time in three starts, Nola faced Atlanta and allowed two runs. He gave up a solo home run to Michael Harris in the third inning and another run on a fielder's choice in the fourth. Nola has quality starts in three of his last four outings and now sports a 3.29 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 162:43 K:BB through 172.1 innings over 28 starts this year. He's projected to make his next start at Miami in a favorable matchup.
Aug 27 2024Nola (12-6) earned the win against the Astros on Tuesday, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six over seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola worked around some early traffic but grew stronger as the game progressed, retiring the final nine batters he faced to earn his first win since July 11. The 31-year-old generated 14 swinging strikes on 102 pitches and has now yielded just two earned runs across 19 innings in his past three outings. On the season, he owns a 3.30 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 153:42 K:BB across 166.1 innings and currently lines up to face Atlanta on Sunday night.
Aug 21 2024Nola allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola gave up a two-run home run to Orlando Arcia, which was all Atlanta managed to put on the board. Nola's been in a bit of a rut, issuing multiple walks in five of his last six outings. In that span, he's allowed 13 runs (12 earned) over 34.2 innings, but he's now gone seven starts without a win. The right-hander is at a 3.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 147:41 K:BB through 159.1 innings across 26 starts this season. Nola's next start is projected to be at home versus the Astros.
Aug 17 2024Nola came away with a no-decision in Friday's 3-2 win over the Nationals, allowing seven hits and two walks over 6.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran righty got stronger as the game wore on and didn't let a runner get past second base after the first inning, and Nola left the mound after 111 pitches (74 strikes) with the Phillies out front 2-0. He had to settle for his 16th quality start of the season when Carlos Estevez blew the save in the ninth, however. Nola has gone six straight starts without getting into the win column, and his strikeouts have dried up at the same time. During that stretch, he's posted a 3.67 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 26:12 K:BB through 34.1 innings, and he's fanned more than four batters only once. Fatigue isn't likely to be a factor for the 31-year-old -- he's topped 200 innings three times in his career, and has tossed only 154 so far in 2024 -- but the Phillies may look to work some extra rest into his schedule given their comfortable lead in the NL East. Nola is currently scheduled to make his next outing on the road next week in Atlanta.
Aug 10 2024Nola (11-6) allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola yielded multiple homers for the sixth time this season and has now given up nine long balls over his last eight starts. He's lost his last two outings and hasn't won in five starts, giving up 15 runs (14 earned) over 27.2 innings in the longer span. For the season, Nola has pitched to a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 138:37 K:BB through 147.1 innings over 24 starts. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Nationals.
Aug 6 2024Nola (11-5) took the loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out four batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was great outside of the third frame, when he allowed four runs on five hits, including a Teoscar Hernandez two-run homer. That inning was enough to send the right-hander to his first loss since June 29, as Philadelphia's offense put up just three total runs. Nola has given up four runs twice over his past four outings and has a mediocre 4.37 ERA with only one quality start during that span.
Nola has given up four runs twice over his past four starts and has a mediocre 4.37 ERA with only one quality start during that span.
Jul 30 2024Nola allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in a no-decision Tuesday against the Yankees. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed at least one baserunner in each of the first six innings Tuesday, though he'd manage to hold the Yankees to a lone first-inning run before Jazz Chisholm led off the sixth with a solo homer. It's just the second time in Nola's last eight starts that he's failed to make it through six innings. Overall, he's 11-4 on the year with a 3.43 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 130:34 K:BB across 22 starts (136.1 innings). Nola's currently lined up to face the Dodgers on the road in his next outing early next week.
Jul 24 2024Nola did not factor into the decision in Wednesday's loss to the Twins, allowing one earned run on six hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola came out of the All-Star break slow, allowing four earned runs in five innings against the Pirates his last time out. The 31-year-old was much sharper Wednesday, fanning six batters and limiting the Twins to just one run, a solo home run by Matt Wallner in the second inning. The right-hander notched his 15th quality start of the season Wednesday, tied for third in the major leagues. Nola now owns a 3.44 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 126:31 K:BB across 130.2 innings. He is tentatively scheduled for a home start against the Yankees early next week.
Jul 19 2024Nola didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Pirates, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After the Phillies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Pittsburgh responded with three straight hits off Nola in the bottom half before tying the game 3-3. Nola would ultimately hold the Pirates to just one additional run over his final four innings in an eventual no-decision. The 31-year-old right-hander had delivered five straight quality starts prior to the All-Star break, working to a 3.13 ERA in that span (31.2 innings). Overall, Nola is 11-4 with a 3.54 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 120:28 K:BB across 124.2 innings this season. Nola's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Twins in his next outing.
Jul 11 2024Nola (11-4) picked up the win Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks across six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola had no issues with the top end of the Dodgers' lineup, holding Shohei Ohtani, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman hitless with five strikeouts. The lone run against Nola came off the bat of Gavin Lux, who went yard to lead off the fifth inning. Nola has generated at least eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances and has posted a quality start in 10 of his last 11 starts. The 31-year-old owns the second most wins in baseball to go along with a 3.38 ERA across 119.2 innings. However, his 8.7 K/9 would be his worst tally since his rookie year in 2015.
Jul 5 2024Nola (10-4) yielded three runs on five hits over six innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola got through three shutout frames before coughing up a two-run shot to Austin Riley in the fourth inning. Ozzie Albies then knocked a solo homer in the sixth. It was the first time that Nola gave up multiple home runs since May 31, and he allowed just three in the entire month of June. He forced a season-high 21 swinging strikes Friday, with 10 coming on the knuckle curve. Nola has delivered a quality start in nine of his last 10 outings, including in four straight. During that 10-start stretch, the veteran righty has posted a 3.34 ERA while going 6-2. Nola will carry a 3.48 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be at home against the Dodgers.
Jun 29 2024Nola (9-4) took the loss Saturday, giving up three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings in a 3-2 loss to the Marlins. He struck out nine without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander delivered his third straight quality start and 12th of the season on 100 pitches (71 strikes), but Nola let a win slip through his fingers when he served up back-to-back doubles with two outs in the seventh inning, with both coming around to score the final runs of the game. Nola took his first loss since May 8, and he'll carry a 3.43 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 99:25 K:BB through 107.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next weekend in Atlanta.
Jun 24 2024Nola (9-3) picked up the win Monday against Detroit, allowing one earned run on six hits and zero walks while striking out six over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed just one extra-base hit, limiting the Tigers to just one run to notch his sixth quality start over his past seven outings. Despite getting shelled by the Red Sox for eight earned runs on June 13, the 31-year-old owns a robust 3.54 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a 84:25 K:BB over 94 innings this season. The right-hander is in a favorable position to keep the success going in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend against Miami.
Jun 18 2024Nola didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Padres, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola held San Diego scoreless through his first five innings before ultimately allowing three runs in the sixth, including a pair on a Luis Campusano homer. Still, it was a solid bounce-back outing overall for the 31-year-old Nola, who was tagged for eight runs in his last start against the Red Sox. Nola's 8-3 on the year with a 3.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 84:25 K:BB across 15 starts (94 innings). He's currently lined up to face the Tigers on the road early next week in his next outing.
Jun 13 2024Nola (8-3) took the loss to the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola had two disastrous innings, allowing four runs in both the second and fourth. The fourth inning was especially rough, as he surrendered a three-run homer to Tyler O'Neill and was unable to complete the frame. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the eight earned runs allowed by Nola tied a career high, and his season ERA climbed from 2.77 to 3.48. Despite the rise in ERA, Nola had previously rattled off five consecutive quality starts and owns a 1.08 WHIP and 78:24 K:BB in 14 outings. He will look to rebound next Tuesday in a home matchup with the Padres.
Jun 5 2024Nola (8-2) picked up the win Wednesday, scattering two hits over seven scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over the Brewers. He struck out five without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was dominant as he delivered his fourth straight quality start and eighth of the season, firing 68 of 93 pitches for strikes. Nola will take a 2.77 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 76:22 K:BB through 84.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week in Boston.
May 31 2024Nola (7-2) earned the win Friday over the Cardinals, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was another strong outing from Nola, who held St. Louis to a pair of solo home runs in a winning effort. The 30-year-old right-hander has held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last four outings. Nola's ERA now sits at 3.03 on the year with a 1.03 WHIP and 71:22 K:BB across 12 starts (77.1 innings). He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week at home against the Brewers.
May 25 2024Nola allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola turned in his third straight quality start, which was his seventh such outing this year. He left the game on the hook for the loss, but the Phillies rallied ahead in the ninth inning. Nola has allowed six runs (four earned) over his last 22 innings, giving him a 3.04 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 65:20 K:BB through 71 innings across 11 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Cardinals.
May 19 2024Nola (6-2) picked up the win Sunday against the Nationals, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks across seven innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola completed at least seven innings for the fifth time in his last seven starts -- including a complete game shutout in his last appearance. Although the 31-year-old generated a quality start, he struggled with the long ball, as he allowed a two-run homer to Eddie Rosario in the fourth and a solo home run to Jesse Winker in the fifth. Nola hadn't yielded a homer in three straight starts before Sunday. He's lined up for a trip to Coors Field for a start Saturday.
May 14 2024Nola (5-2) earned the win, allowing just four hits over nine shutout innings Tuesday against the Mets. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was dominant Tuesday, holding the Mets without a baserunner until the sixth inning en route to the fourth complete-game shutout of his career. It's certainly an encouraging outing for Nola, after he'd posted a subpar 5.59 ERA over his previous two starts (9.2 innings). The 30-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.10 on the season with a 1.09 WHIP and 55:15 K:BB through nine outings (58 innings). Nola's currently in line to make a second start this week Sunday at home versus the Nationals.
May 8 2024Nola (4-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Blue Jays, allowing four runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola held Toronto to one run through his first five innings before starting to unravel in the sixth, allowing hits to three of the first four batters in the frame, and he was ultimately charged with three more runs. It's the first loss since for Nola since his first start of the year March 30. His ERA now sits at 3.72 with a 1.20 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across eight outings (49 innings) this season. Nola will look to get back in the win column in his next start, currently slated for early next week against the Mets.
May 3 2024Nola did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both of the Giants' runs came in the second inning on a Thairo Estrada double, though it certainly could've been a lot worse -- Nola needed 46 pitches to get through the frame, issuing four walks. The right-hander was ultimately pulled after throwing 89 pitches through four innings, as he failed to qualify for the win. Nola, who'd gone eight innings in each of his previous two starts, is 4-1 on the season with a 3.32 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB across seven outings (43.1 innings). Nola's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Marlins in his next start.
Apr 26 2024Nola (4-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over eight innings Friday, striking out 10 and earning a win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was terrific Friday, posting his first double-digit strikeout game since July 4, 2023. He threw 74 of 106 pitches for strikes and forced 14 whiffs in the victory. The veteran righty had yielded just one run through six frames before Graham Pauley's two-run shot in the seventh inning. Since coughing up six earned runs in his season debut, Nola has posted a stifling 1.29 ERA with a 33:10 K:BB over his last five starts (35 innings). He'll carry a 3.23 ERA into his next appearance, which is projected to be on the road against the Angels next week.
Apr 21 2024Nola (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk over eight innings to pick up the win Sunday against the White Sox. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed a first-inning two-run homer to Eloy Jimenez but settled in thereafter, allowing just three more baserunners over the next seven innings. This season has been a steady climb for Nola, who struggled in his first start but has worked progressively deeper into each start, culminating with his eight-inning effort Sunday. One concern for Nola moving forward is that he's already allowed six home runs this year after allowing a career-high 32 last season. The veteran righty will take a 3.16 ERA and 1.09 WHIP into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place during a weekend set in San Diego against the Padres.
Apr 15 2024Nola didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over 7.1 innings against Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola turned in his best start of the season Monday, picking up a second consecutive quality start and surpassing four strikeouts for the first time. The only damage against Nola came in the fifth inning when Michael Toglia clubbed a solo home run. Although Nola owns a 3.47 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP, he's been particularly susceptible to the long ball (1.9 HR/9 in 2024), a trend worth monitoring after giving up 1.5 HR/9 in 2023. Nola's projected to cap off a two-start week Sunday against the White Sox.
Apr 10 2024Nola (2-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only damage against Nola came via a pair of solo home runs in the second and third innings, as the right-hander picked up his second win and first quality start on the young season. After he was tagged for six earned runs in an Opening-Day loss, Nola's held opponents to just two runs on five hits over 11.2 innings in his subsequent two outings. He'll look for a third straight win in his next start, currently slated as a home matchup with the Rockies early next week.
Apr 5 2024Nola (1-1) picked up the win Friday, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings and allowing two hits and four walks. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Nola collected his first win Friday night, he still looked relatively rusty and lucked out on facing a weak Nationals lineup. His entire pitch arsenal looked diminished as he averaged only 91.1-mph on his fastball, down 1.6-mph from his average velocity in 2023. Nola is tentatively slated to start against the Cardinals on the road in his next outing.
Mar 31 2024Nola (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the Phillies fell 12-4 to Atlanta, coughing up seven runs on 12 hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Five of the hits off Nola went for extra bases, including homers by Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson. The 30-year-old right-hander threw 83 pitches (54 strikes) before exiting, and while it was far from an ideal start to the campaign, Nola has still been one of the most reliable pitchers in the game since emerging as a regular part of the Philadelphia rotation, striking out more than
Oct 17 2023Nola allowed three hits over six scoreless innings to earn the win in Tuesday's 10-0 victory over the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of the NLCS. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola followed up a solid outing against Atlanta in the NLDS with another gem, this time taking advantage of a quiet Diamondbacks offense to cover the bulk of a shutout. Key for Nola in this contest was the success of commanding his curveball, which averaged a 32.7 called plus swinging-strike percentage during the regular season, but was up to a 39 percent mark in Tuesday's start. In the playoffs so far, the right-hander has a tidy 0.96 ERA and 0.75 WHIP with 19 strikeouts across 18.2 innings.
Sep 27 2023Nola won't pitch again during the regular season and is expected to start Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Round next Wednesday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Philadelphia's playoff seed is stable for the No. 1 wild-card spot, so it's not a surprise Nola's turn through the rotation will be skipped this weekend. The right-hander ended up making his final start of the regular season Tuesday versus Pittsburgh, and he allowed just one run and struck out eight in 6.2 frames. Nola closes out the campaign with a 4.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 202:45 K:BB across 193.2 innings.
Sep 26 2023Nola did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and no walks over 6.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola looked great Tuesday night against a feeble Pirates lineup, posting his third consecutive start allowing two or fewer earned runs. Over that span, the free-agent-to-be has thrown 17.1 innings to the tune of a 2.07 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB. Nola looks to finish the season strong in his last start, currently scheduled to be against the Mets in New York.
Sep 21 2023Nola did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings against Atlanta while not issuing any walks. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola went 1-2-3 through the first three innings before allowing three hits in the fourth, which led to one run coming across for Atlanta. He surrendered another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Nicky Lopez, marking the right-hander's second consecutive start with two earned runs allowed. It was also Nola's first time this month in which he made it through six innings (spanning four starts), and he still carries a 6.86 ERA in September.
Sep 15 2023Nola allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in Friday's win over the Cardinals. He struck out one and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola would've been in line for a win but couldn't finish the fifth inning after throwing 97 pitches. He's failed to complete five innings in three straight starts, posting an 8.56 ERA during that span. His season ERA sits at 4.62 with a 186:45 K:BB through 181 innings. Nola's next matchup is currently expected to be in Atlanta.
Sep 10 2023Nola came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Phillies' 8-4 win over the Marlins, giving up four runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies staked the veteran right-hander to an early 5-0 lead, but Nola nearly gave it all back in the top of the fifth as he got tagged for five straight hits before getting the hook -- a collapse that included three doubles and a Garrett Hampson solo shot. Nola has now failed to complete five innings in back-to-back starts -- a worrying trend for the 30-year-old as Philly tries to lock down a playoff spot -- and since the All-Star break he's stumbled to a 5.18 ERA in 57.1 innings while serving up 10 homers despite an otherwise solid 1.27 WHIP and 65:14 K:BB. He'll look to rebound in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in St. Louis.
Sep 3 2023Nola (12-9) took the loss Saturday, coughing up seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 innings as the Phillies fell 7-5 to the Brewers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Five of the eight hits off Nola went for extra bases, including a two-run blast by Carlos Santana in the fifth inning that helped chase the right-hander from the game. Nola saw his three-game win streak snapped, while the seven runs were the most he's allowed since he got tagged for eight by Arizona just over a year ago. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, likely to come at home next weekend against the Marlins.
Aug 27 2023Nola (12-8) earned the win Sunday, allowing one hit and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Cardinals. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was at his best Sunday, allowing just two men to reach base while going seven innings in a consecutive start. It's the third straight win for Nola, who's worked to a 2.63 ERA over his last four outings (24 innings). He lowered his ERA to 4.30 on the season with a 1.12 WHIP and 174:41 K:BB across 27 starts (167.1 innings) this season. Nola will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week in Milwaukee.
Aug 21 2023Nola (11-8) earned the win Monday, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk over seven innings against the Giants. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a shaky start for Nola, allowing a pair of runs in his first three innings. However, he rebounded to blank the Giants over his subsequent four frames while allowing just one more hit. It was a much-needed effort from the 30-year-old Nola, who had struggled to a 6.75 ERA over his previous four starts. Overall, Nola sports a 4.49 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP and 165:40 K:BB across 26 starts (160.1 innings) this season. He's lined up for a home matchup with the Cardinals in his next outing.
Aug 17 2023Nola (10-8) picked up the win Wednesday, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks over five innings in a 9-4 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An anticipated pitchers' duel between Nola and Kevin Gausman never materialized, but the Phillies' right-hander came away with his first win since July 18 thanks to an offensive outburst highlighted by Bryce Harper's first multi-homer game of the year. The four free passes were a season worst for Nola, who has now failed to last six innings in four straight starts while stumbling to a 6.75 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB through 20 innings over that stretch. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Giants.
Aug 11 2023Nola did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over five innings against Washington. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After clunkers in his previous two starts, Nola got back on track Thursday, working into the sixth inning before back-to-back singles led to his removal with the score tied 0-0. Phillies reliever, Matt Strahm, then allowed an RBI double to Ildemaro Vargas, marking Nola's only charged run. In five outings since the All-Star break, the 30-year-old fantasy stalwart holds a 1-2 record with a 4.91 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 33:5 K:BB across 29.1 innings during that stretch. He is currently slated to face Toronto on the road next week.
Aug 4 2023Nola (9-8) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against Kansas City. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The eight strikeouts were a silver lining in an otherwise disappointing outing for Nola, who was on track for the victory having allowed only two runs through the first five innings. Things then fell apart for the Phillies ace in the sixth when he allowed a solo home run to lead off the frame, followed by a double and a walk. Nola was pulled and both runners went on to score, saddling him with his eighth loss. Nola will look to rebound next week when he gets a likely home start against the Nationals.
Jul 30 2023Nola (9-7) took the loss Saturday, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola appeared to be on track for a solid outing Saturday, striking out four of the first six batters he faced through two scoreless innings to open the game. However, the right-hander would then go on to surrender a leadoff home run to Liover Peguero to open the bottom of third before allowing another six runs over the following two innings. It marked Nola's fourth start this season in which he's allowed at least five earned runs and just the second time that he was unable to make it through five innings. On a positive note, he's now recorded at least six strikeouts in five straight starts to only four walks.
Jul 24 2023Nola did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings against the Guardians. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola struggled with power Sunday, surrendering solo homers to Steven Kwan and Andres Gimenez to mark his third time allowing multiple home runs in his last five starts. Despite giving up a pair of homers, Nola fanned seven batters to notch his fourth consecutive outing with at least six punchouts. He's tentatively scheduled to make his next start during a three-game road series against the Pirates this weekend.
Jul 18 2023Nola (9-6) earned the win against the Brewers on Tuesday after he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks over 7.1 innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw 71 of his 98 pitches for a strike and induced 18 whiffs as he didn't surrender any home runs for just the fourth time through 20 starts this year. The long ball has been a problem for Nola in 2023 with 21 homers allowed after he gave up just 19 all of last season. The 30-year-old has a 4.27 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 126:30 K:BB across 126.1 innings and tentatively lines up to next take the mound this weekend in Cleveland.
Jul 9 2023Nola (8-6) was charged with the loss Sunday against the Marlins after he gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and no walks across six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an unceremonious close to the first half for Nola, as he surrendered three home runs in a start for the second time this season. The right-hander came into Sunday's contest having won three of his past four outings, but he's now allowed at least four earned runs in 10 of his 19 starts this year. Nola enters the All-Star break with an underwhelming 4.39 ERA though 119 innings,
Jul 4 2023Nola (8-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over 7.1 innings in a 3-1 win over the Rays. He struck out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola came out on the winning end of a pitchers duel, besting Zach Eflin, who gave up two runs and struck out nine across seven innings, to claim his eighth win of the campaign. Nola tied his season high in strikeouts and carried a shutout into the eighth inning but surrendered a solo homer to Wander Franco and was pulled. The 30-year-old has been battling some severe inconsistencies across his last six starts, allowing one or fewer earned runs in three starts but surrendering at least four runs in the other three. The primary cause of his struggles has been the long ball, as Nola has surrendered 18 homers through 18 appearances, tied for the eighth most in baseball. However, he's lined up to make his next start against the Marlins, who rank 24th in home runs per game.
Jun 28 2023Nola (7-5) earned the win over the Cubs on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola recorded his shortest outing since going just 3.2 frames in his Opening Day start versus Texas, and he needed 97 pitches to get through five frames. However, the Phillies supported him with plenty of runs, allowing the right-hander to pick up his third win over his past five starts. Despite the victory, Nola's outing was mostly forgettable -- he snapped a 13-game streak of completing at least six innings and tallied his lowest strikeout total since May 14. His ERA is up to 4.51 on the campaign, a significant drop-off from the 3.25 mark he posted last season.
Jun 22 2023Nola didn't factor in the decision in Thursday's extra-inning loss to Atlanta after he gave up two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola produced just eight swinging strikes but was able to keep Atlanta off the board, which is his first scoreless outing in 16 starts this year. The 30-year-old entered Thursday's contest with a 5.34 ERA across his previous five starts. He tentatively projects to take the mound next week on the road versus the Cubs.
Jun 21 2023Nola won't start as scheduled Wednesday against Atlanta because the game has been postponed due to rain, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's turn in the rotation will presumably now come Thursday, and Wednesday's game will be made up Sept. 11. The 30-year-old righty holds a 4.50 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 28 strikeouts through 20 innings since the beginning of June.
Jun 16 2023Nola (6-5) earned the win Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All of the damage against Nola came in the bottom of the third, when he allowed three consecutive hits to open the inning before eventually surrendering a three-run home run to Ketel Marte. He rebounded nicely, however, striking out the side in the very next inning after the Phillies' offense had retaken the lead. The right-hander has allowed at least four runs in six of his last nine starts, though he's now racked up 28 strikeouts to only six walks through 20 innings during three June outings.
Jun 11 2023Nola (5-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola surrendered a season-high six runs but still completed at least six innings for an 11th straight start and posted seven or more strikeouts for the fourth time this year. The veteran right-hander's less-than-ideal 4.60 ERA clouds the fact that his WHIP (1.10) and K:BB (84:23) are very solid through 14 starts (88 innings). Regardless, it's still been a disappointing beginning to the campaign for Nola, who finished 2022 with a 3.25 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 235:29 K:BB across 32 appearances (205 innings).
Jun 5 2023Nola (5-4) allowed three unearned runs on one hit and three walks over seven innings Monday, striking out 12 and earning a win over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola carried a no-hitter through 6.2 frames before coughing up a three-run homer. He wasn't tagged with any earned runs though, dropping his ERA to 4.30 after his best outing of the year. The 30-year-old also forced a season-high 21 swinging strikes, including 10 with his fastball. Prior to Monday's outing, Nola had allowed at least four runs in three of his last four appearances. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Dodgers this weekend.
May 31 2023Nola (4-4) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola would have likely had better results if not for the presence of Mark Canha, who knocked in all four runs against the veteran hurler. There were some things to like about Nola's performance -- he allowed just one extra-base hit and extended his streak of pitching six-plus innings to nine games -- but he also tied a season high with three walks and struck out just five batters. The right-hander's ability to pitch deep into games has been an asset for Philadelphia, but his overall numbers are a drop-off compared to last season. On the campaign, he's posting a 4.70 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 65:18 K:BB across 74.2 frames.
May 21 2023Nola (4-3) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over seven innings during a 12-3 win over the Cubs. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola got early run support and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts while cruising through seven innings en route to his fourth win. The lone blemish for the right-hander came via a two-run home run from Dansby Swanson, which continues to be a minor issue for Nola. He's allowed one home run in eight of his 10 starts and holds a 4.31 ERA across 62.2 innings. However, Nola's 1.07 WHIP and 53:13 K:BB to start the year remains elite and suggests the ERA will drop eventually.
May 14 2023Nola (3-3) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over seven innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola has gone at least six innings in seven of his nine starts this season. He lacked run support Sunday, leading to his first lost since April 11. The right-hander has maintained a pedestrian 4.53 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 43:12 K:BB through 55.2 innings this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Cubs in his next outing.
May 10 2023Nola (3-2) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings in an 8-4 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander appears to be warming up along with the weather. Nola's four-seam fastball averaged a season-high 93 mph in this outing and topped out at 95 mph, easing concerns about his April velocity, and he's delivered five quality starts in his eight trips to the mound in 2023. He'll take a 4.44 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 39:11 K:BB through 48.2 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come this weekend in Coors Field.
May 3 2023Nola did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola pitched well for most of Wednesday's outing, but his streak of three consecutive quality starts was snapped after Chris Taylor tripled in the seventh inning and scored on Freddie Freeman's sacrifice fly. While Nola sports an unsightly 4.64 ERA, a solid 1.13 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB would indicate that positive regression is coming. He's currently lined up to face the Blue Jays at home in his next outing.
Apr 29 2023Nola (2-2) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on three hits over eight innings against the Astros. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola had his best start of the season by far, as his only blemish was giving up a solo home run to Jeremy Pena in this 107-pitch masterpiece. The right-hander tossed seven innings in his previous appearance on April 21st against Colorado, so he appears to be settling in after a rough start to the season. The 29-year-old is tentatively slated to face the Dodgers on the road in his next start.
Apr 28 2023Nola (2-2) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on three hits over eight innings against the Astros. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola provided his best start of the season in a World Series rematch. The righty posted season-best numbers in innings pitched, strike outs, runs allowed and hits allowed. Nola lowered his ERA to 4.46 and picked up his second win of 2023.
Apr 5 2023Nola (0-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with one walk through six innings against the Yankees. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's outing was undoubtedly an improvement compared to his previous performance on Opening Day. The right-hander was tagged with a run in the first inning, but he kept the Yankees scoreless until the sixth inning and would eventually depart after his only walk of the game plated a third earned run in the seventh. While Nola still has yet to make it into the win column, he is trending in the right direction. The 29-year-old displayed better command throwing 62 of his 87 pitches for strikes and did a better job of staying ahead in his counts. Nola is tentatively scheduled to start Tuesday against the Marlins.
Mar 30 2023Nola allowed five earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four across 3.2 innings in Thursday's loss to the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola out-dueled Jacob deGrom for much of his outing, as he blanked the Rangers through three frames. However, things deteriorated quickly in the fourth inning when he allowed five of the first six batters he faced to reach base. That stretch culminated with a three-run homer by Robbie Grossman. Nola is coming off an excellent 2022 season during which he posted a 3.25 ERA and 0.96 WHIP, so there's no need to panic over one poor outing to begin the new campaign.
Feb 17 2023Nola and the Phillies have begun negotiations on a potential long-term contract extension, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola is locked in at a $16 million salary for 2023, but he's currently scheduled to reach free agency once this year's postseason concludes. Gelb writes that there "appears to be momentum for an agreement sometime this spring" and notes that Nola reiterated Friday that his desire is to remain with Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. The 29-year-old right-hander registered a stellar 3.25 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 235:29 K:BB across 205 regular-season innings (32 starts) last year for the NL champs.
Nov 7 2022The Phillies exercised Nola's $16 million team option for 2023 on Monday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola has held up to his end of the bargain and then some since signing a four-year, $45 million extension with the Phillies in March 2019, with the 16.1 WAR he's accumulated over that four-season stretch placing him sixth among all MLB pitchers. The 29-year-old right-hander will once again be back with the Phillies at a team-friendly rate in 2023 before he hits free agency for the first time next winter. The Phillies could look to negotiate with Nola on a long-term deal in the months to come to ensure he doesn't make it to the open market next offseason.
Nov 2 2022Nola pitched four innings and took the loss during Wednesday's 5-0 loss to the Astros in Game 4 of the World Series, allowing three runs on seven hits and zero walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was outdueled by Astros starter Cristian Javier, who kept the Phillies hitless through six innings. The 29-year-old Nola allowed three singles in a row before being removed in the fifth inning, and the bullpen was not able to help him out. Jose Alvarado hit the first batter he faced and then surrendered a two-run double to Alex Bregman in what eventually became a five-run fifth inning. After two starts of six innings and zero earned runs for his first two postseason starts, Nola has now allowed at least three runs in the last three appearances while failing to get through five innings each time. He is 2-2 with a 5.36 ERA across 15.2 innings in the postseason.
Oct 28 2022Nola pitched 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision during Friday night's Game 1 of the World Series, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five in the 6-5 win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola fell victim to a stellar performance by Kyle Tucker, who tagged him for two home runs and four RBI. Other than Tucker, the Astros were just 4-for-16 with two walks against the 29-year-old righty. Nola was able to settle down after the three-run homer in the third inning made the score 5-0, retiring the next six batters and giving the Phillies a chance to make a comeback. Although the Phillies were able to come away with the win, Nola has now given up six runs and failed to reach the sixth inning in back-to-back starts.
Oct 19 2022Nola took the loss Wednesday afternoon after 4.2 innings of work, surrendering six runs on seven hits and zero walks while striking out six during the 8-5 defeat to the Padres in Game 2 of the NLCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's offense gave him a 4-0 lead to work with, but a two-run second inning followed by four more runs in the fifth proved enough to knock him out of the game. Nola had gone three straight starts with six innings of scoreless work, but the Padres were able to pile on hits in bunches against the 29-year-old righty. In his lone start against the Padres during the regular season, Nola delivered a one-run, 10-strikeout performance over seven innings, but the new-look Padres offense gave him problems in Game 2. Nola's postseason ERA jumped from 0.00 to 3.16, but he does have 18 strikeouts across 17.1 innings.
Oct 3 2022Nola (11-13) earned the win against the Astros on Monday, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks with nine strikeouts over 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After retiring the first 20 batters of the game, Nola allowed back-to-back singles to Yordan Alvarez and David Hensley with two out in the seventh inning. Interim manager Rob Thomson then pulled Nola with 88 pitches in favor of the L/L matchup between Kyle Tucker and reliever Jose Alvarado, who won the matchup with a punchout to position Nola to earn his 11th victory. Nola closes the regular season fourth in the majors with 235 strikeouts to go along with a 3.25 ERA through 205 innings.
Sep 28 2022Nola (10-13) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola cruised through the first four innings, striking out six while allowing just one hit. However, things unraveled for him in the fifth after he allowed back-to-back singles to Nico Hoerner and Patrick Wisdom to begin the inning and then hit Alfonso Rivas with a pitch two batters later. Christopher Morel would then add a three-run shot to top off a four-run inning on Nola, who came in having allowed just one home run this month. The right-hander has now lost three of his last four decisions and is projected to take on the Astros in Houston in his next start.
Sep 24 2022Nola (10-12) picked up the win in Friday's 9-1 rout of Atlanta, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies staked the right-hander to a 4-0 lead after two innings, and Nola had little difficulty recording his 17th quality start of the season. He generated 17 swinging strikes on 104 pitches, and the 29-year-old has now won double-digit games while striking out 200-plus batters for the third time in his career, but the first since 2019.
Sep 17 2022Nola (9-12) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings, taking the loss Saturday versus Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola didn't receive enough run support, and he was trouble by Ronald Acuna, who tagged him for a two-run home run and a two-run double in the third and fourth innings. Nola's inconsistency continued -- he's given up four or more runs in three of his last six outings, and one or fewer in the other three starts in that span. The 29-year-old right-hander now has a 3.38 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 210:26 K:BB through 186.1 innings through 29 starts. He'll look to get on track again in a rematch with Atlanta at home next weekend.
Sep 11 2022Nola yielded two hits over two scoreless innings against Washington on Sunday. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola threw 44 pitches before the game went into a lengthy rain delay that ended his outing. The 29-year-old righty lowered his ERA to 3.31 with a stellar 202:24 K:BB through 179.1 frames. He's given up fewer than two runs in six of his last eight starts but he was tagged with 13 runs in the other two. Nola is projected to start in Atlanta next week.
Sep 7 2022Nola didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Marlins, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander delivered his 16th quality start of the season and his fifth outing with double-digit strikeouts, generating 16 swinging strikes among his 97 pitches. Nola also reached the 200-K plateau for the fourth straight full season, and only Hall of Famer Steve Carlton has more such seasons in a Phillies uniform. Nola will take a 3.35 ERA and 0.97 WHIP into his next start.
Aug 30 2022Nola (9-11) gave up eight runs on 10 hits and a hit batsman while striking out five over four innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed a five-run rally in the second inning and a three-run home run to Jake McCarthy in the fourth. Over his last four starts, Nola has alternated between brilliance and disaster. Tuesday's start was his worst of the season, coming just one turn after a complete-game shutout versus the Reds in his previous outing. Despite the inconsistency, the right-hander has a 3.43 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 190:22 K:BB through 170.2 innings across 26 starts this year. He'll look to bounce back next week in a projected home start versus the Marlins.
Aug 25 2022Nola (9-10) earned the win Thursday, allowing zero runs on five hits over nine innings against the Reds. He struck out 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed only one extra-base hit in his stellar performance - a double off the bat of outfielder T.J. Friedl. The righty has turned in an outstanding August, boasting a 2.25 ERA in 28 innings over four starts. The 29-year-old is far better away from Philadelphia with a 2.13 ERA and four home runs allowed in 84.1 innings compared to a 4.04 ERA and 12 home runs allowed in 82.1 innings at home.
Aug 20 2022Nola (8-10) took the loss Friday, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings as the Phillies fell 7-2 to the Mets. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The strikeouts salvaged some fantasy value for Nola, but the right-hander saw his quality start streak end at three as the Mets hit him hard, with half of the eight hits off Nola going for extra bases including a Pete Alonso two-run blast in the third inning. Since the beginning of July, Nola's fate has been determined by whether he can keep the ball in the park. In the five outings during which he didn't serve up a homer, he has five quality starts with a 1.50 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 34:6 K:BB through 36 innings. In the three starts in which he was taken deep, he stumbled to a 7.50 ERA and 1.33 WHIP despite a 23:2 K:BB through 18 frames.
Aug 14 2022Nola (8-9) gave up one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over eight innings to take the loss in a 1-0 defeat to the Mets on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola performed very well in Saturday night's pitching duel with Jacob deGrom, but he was saddled with the tough loss despite giving up only one run over eight dominant innings. The only damage came on a Pete Alonso RBI single in the first to score Starling Marte, who had stolen second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Nola is in the midst of his best season since 2018 and boasts a superb WHIP of 0.93 while striking out over a batter per inning. He is expected to make his next start in a rematch at home against the Mets.
Aug 7 2022Nola (8-8) allowed one run on five hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out five and picking up a win against Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from Cesar Hernandez's RBI single in the fifth inning, Nola kept the Nationals' lineup pretty quiet in Sunday's easy victory. It was his second straight start allowing just one run after giving up five runs in two of his previous three outings. The veteran righty is now sporting a 3.17 ERA with a stellar 157:20 K:BB through 22 starts. Nola is expected to face the Mets on the road next week.
Jul 31 2022Nola (7-8) allowed one run on six hits and a walk over six innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola bounced back nicely after coughing up five runs against Atlanta in his last outing. He gave up an RBI double to Cal Mitchell in the third inning Sunday but didn't face much danger otherwise. The 29-year-old righty lowered his season ERA to 3.25 with a terrific 152:18 K:BB through 138.2 frames. Nola is projected to take on the Nationals at home next weekend.
Jul 27 2022Nola (6-8) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up five runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings as the Phillies fell 6-3 to Atlanta. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Five of the seven hits off Nola went for extra bases, including homers by Michael Harris and Matt Olson. The right-hander has been tagged for four or more runs in three of his last five starts, but he's maintained a solid fantasy floor by fanning at least seven batters in six of his last seven. On the season, Nola sports a 3.32 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and eye-popping 144:17 K:BB through 132.2 innings.
Jul 17 2022Nola (6-7) allowed four hits and a walk over 8.1 shutout innings Sunday, striking out 10 and earning a win over Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola let just three Marlins reach base through eight innings before coughing up two more singles in the ninth. It was his eighth straight start of at least seven innings; during that stretch, he's sporting an impressive 2.25 ERA and 58:6 K:BB. He lowered his season ERA to 3.13 through 126.2 frames heading into the All-Star break. While the 29-year-old's 9.7 K/9 is his lowest since the 2019 season, Nola's 1.1 BB/9 is the best of his career and currently leads the National League.
Jul 14 2022Nola was reinstated from the restricted list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was unable to travel for the Phillies' two-game series at Toronto. He did not miss any starts and is projected to take the mound Sunday at Miami.
Jul 12 2022Nola (personal) was placed on the restricted list ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola is unvaccinated and unable to travel with the team to Toronto for the two-game series this week. The transaction won't affect the right-hander's spot in the rotation since he pitched Monday against the Cardinals, taking the loss after giving up five earned runs over seven innings. He still lines up to start Saturday or Sunday in Miami.
Jul 6 2022Nola (5-6) got the loss Wednesday after he pitched 7.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was once again able to pitch deep Wednesday, but he was ultimately outdueled on the mound by Josiah Gray. Nola gave up an RBI double in the fourth inning to Yadiel Hernandez, then another double off the bat of Luis Garcia plated two runs in the seventh frame. Nola has now pitched at least seven innings in six straight contests and seven of his last eight outings overall. Since June 8, the 29-year-old has produced a 2.01 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 41 strikeouts over 44.2 frames in six starts.
Jun 30 2022Nola (5-5) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight across seven innings to earn the win Thursday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was given an 11-run lead by the fourth inning, so he was able to pound the strike zone -- 83 of his 110 pitches went for strikes. However, that did lead to him serving up a pair of homers, marking only the third time he's been taken deep multiple times in an outing this season. Otherwise, Nola has been in excellent form, as he entered Thursday's start having allowed fewer than two earned runs while working at least seven innings in each of his last four starts. Overall, he has maintained a 3.13 ERA and an impeccable 117:14 K:BB across 103.2 frames on the campaign.
Jun 24 2022Nola (4-5) took the loss during Friday's 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Padres, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola and Mackenzie Gore engaged in a pitcher's duel and Nola was the first to break when he surrendered an Austin Nola RBI single in the sixth that proved to be the difference. The 29-year-old tossed 70 of 98 pitches for strikes with a whopping 18 of the swinging variety in matching a season-best with 10 strikeouts. It seemed Nola had put the poor luck behind him as Philadelphia reigned in each of his last five starts, however Nola has permitted just one run in 15 innings over his last two turns and doesn't have a win to show for it. He's slated to take the mound next against Atlanta midweek.
Jun 18 2022Nola did not factor in the decision against Washington on Saturday despite pitching eight scoreless innings. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola didn't yield any extra-base hits in the contest, and he allowed only one runner to reach third base. He was in line for the win when he departed after the eighth inning, but Brad Hand blew the save before the Phillies pulled out the victory in the 10th frame. This was Nola's second scoreless eight-inning start over his past three games, and he extended his streak of appearances without a loss to seven. He's compiled a 3.11 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 99:11 K:BB over 89.2 innings on the season.
Jun 13 2022Nola allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six without walking a batter in seven innings versus the Marlins on Monday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola turned in his fourth quality start in his last six outings, though he looked to be in line for a hard-luck loss this time. The Phillies changed that with runs in the eighth and ninth innings for a comeback win after the right-hander was out of the game. His three-start win streak came to an end Monday, but he's still been pretty solid lately. Overall, Nola has a 3.42 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 91:10 K:BB in 81.2 innings across 13 starts. He lines up for a favorable road start versus the Nationals this weekend.
Jun 8 2022Nola (4-4) earned the win Wednesday after he pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out six against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was electric Wednesday, limiting the Brewers to just four singles and earning his third consecutive victory on the mound. The right-hander has been masterful against Milwaukee this season, tossing 15 scoreless frames with 15 punchouts over two starts against the team. Nola has been in a pattern of alternating strong outings and difficult outings over his last six starts, producing a 3.60 ERA and 0.90 WHIP with 44 strikeouts over 40 innings. He'll look to break that trend in his next outing, which tentatively lines up with him facing the Marlins on Monday.
Jun 2 2022Nola (3-4) picked up the win in Wednesday's 6-5 victory over the Giants, giving up five runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander took a shutout into the sixth inning but hit the wall hard, as the first five Giants batters in the frame all reached base, capped by a three-run blast from Wilmer Flores. Fortunately for Nola, the Phillies responded with four runs on the bottom of the inning to hand him back his win. He'll take a 3.92 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 79:10 K:BB through 66.2 innings into his next start, with a 1.35 HR/9 souring his ERA despite his otherwise ace-like numbers.
May 26 2022Nola (2-4) allowed one earned run on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 across 8.1 innings to earn the win Thursday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola dominated Atlanta and allowed only two extra-base hits -- both to Matt Olson. He also struck out a season-best 10 hitters, backed by 24 called strikes and 15 swinging strikes across 109 total pitches. Nola entered the start having allowed 10 earned runs across his last three starts spanning 17.2 innings, but for the season he has maintained a 3.56 ERA and an elite 74:10 K:BB across 60.2 frames.
May 22 2022Nola didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Dodgers, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The strikeouts were nice and tied Nola's season high, but he was also hit hard as four of the five knocks against him went for extra bases, including homers by Mookie Betts and Will Smith. Nola's now served up nine long balls in 52.1 innings on the season for a career-worst 1.55 HR/9, but he's balanced that out with a career-best 4.8 percent walk rate, leaving him with a 3.96 ERA and 0.99 WHIP.
May 15 2022Nola registered a no-decision during Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Dodgers, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was staked to an early four-run lead, permitting a run apiece in the third and fourth innings, and departed with a two-run lead. Unfortunately, the bullpen blew the game and Philadelphia has now lost all seven of Nola's starts since Opening Day despite the 28-year-old owning a solid 3.64 ERA. He'll go for his second win with a rematch against Los Angeles on tap for next weekend.
May 10 2022Nola (1-4) took the loss during Tuesday's 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola fell behind early by surrendering four hits and two runs in the first inning with additional runs coming around in the second and sixth. Despite a quality 3.83 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, Philadelphia has managed to lose all six of Nola's starts since Opening Day. A 2.59 xERA and 2.56 xFIP suggest he should improve some going forward, with a tentative start Sunday against the Dodgers being the next opportunity.
May 5 2022Nola allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven across seven innings Thursday against the Mets. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed only a solo home run to Starling Marte in the seventh inning in an otherwise dominant outing. He exited the game with a 7-1 lead, but the Philadelphia bullpen imploded to blow what appeared to be a certain win for Nola. After allowing seven earned runs across first two starts of the season, Nola has allowed only six earned runs across his last four starts and 25.1 frames. Overall, he owns a 3.38 ERA with a 41:6 K:BB across 34.2 innings.
Apr 24 2022Nola didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 1-0 loss to Milwaukee, allowing one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts in seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola pitched about as well as possible, but his superb performance was unfortunately matched by opposing starter Eric Lauer. The 28-year-old submitted an excellent 84 game score by allowing just two baserunners compared to seven strikeouts and lowered his ERA from 5.52 to 3.74 in the process. He'll look to keep things rolling against the Mets on Friday.
Apr 18 2022Nola (1-2) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola looked strong through five shutout frames before Charlie Blackmon launched a leadoff homer to begin the sixth. He would exit the game after allowing a single to C.J. Cron later in the inning. The 28-year-old righty has now lost two straight starts despite seeing his ERA drop to 5.52 through 14.2 frames. Nola is lined up to face the Brewers at home this weekend.
Apr 13 2022Nola (1-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Mets, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks over 3.1 innings as the Phillies fell 9-6. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander dodged baserunners in each of the first two innings to keep the game scoreless, but Nola's luck -- and Philadelphia's -- began to run out in the third. He got the hook after throwing 76 pitches (47 strikes), and Nola will take a 6.75 ERA and 12:3 K:BB through 9.1 innings to begin the season into his next start, scheduled for Monday at Coors Field against the Rockies.
Apr 8 2022Nola (1-0) allowed four runs on four hits in six innings while striking out seven in a 9-5 win Friday over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was very efficient through the first six innings, needing just 65 pitches and limiting Oakland to a solo home run and a hit batsman. However, in the seventh, the 28-year-old allowed hits to the first three batters he faced, culminating with a three-run home run by Seth Brown, and was promptly removed. The potent Philadelphia offense staked Nola a sizeable lead and set the former All-Star up for his first victory of the season.
Mar 16 2022Nola is scheduled to start and throw around 35 pitches in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The projected 35-pitch count signals that Nola is well on his way to getting stretched out for a starter's workload by the time the Phillies' April 8 regular-season opener versus the Athletics arrives. Nola is coming off a down 2021 fantasy season in which he submitted the second-worst ERA of his career (4.63), but most underlying indicators (3.37 xFIP, 3.26 SIERA, 24.6 K-BB%) point to him pitching just as effectively as he had in previous years. He likely won't come at a major discount at the draft table, but fantasy managers can invest in Nola with a good deal of confidence that his ERA will bounce back to some degree.
Sep 29 2021Nola (9-9) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, surrendering three runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over six innings. He had four strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta jumped on Nola for a pair of runs in the first inning with an Austin Riley RBI single and an Adam Duvall run-scoring groundout. Nola settled down after that, giving up just one run the rest of the way, but it wasn't enough to avoid the loss. The 28-year-old finishes a disappointing 2021 regular season with a 4.63 ERA -- his highest since 2016 -- despite a sparkling 223:39 K:BB over 180.2 innings.
Sep 23 2021Nola (9-8) got the win in Thursday's 12-6 victory over Pittsburgh, allowing six runs on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The bulk of the damage against Nola came during a five-run second, when a Ke'Bryan Hayes home run cleaned up a bases-loaded one-out jam with. Despite the early six-run hole, Philadelphia rallied with five runs in the third and three in the sixth to earn the 28-year-old consecutive wins. Nola has a high 6.58 ERA across 26 innings in five September starts and is slated to pitch against Atlanta on Wednesday.
Sep 19 2021Nola (8-8) allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out nine across 5.2 innings, earning the win over the Mets on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola surrendered a triple to Brandon Nimmo in the sixth inning that led to his only run allowed. He has 25 strikeouts over his last 16 innings. The 28-year-old has a 4.48 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 211 punchouts in 168.2 innings this season. His next start is scheduled for Thursday against the Pirates.
Sep 12 2021Nola allowed three runs on five hits and struck out 10 in 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus Colorado on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the third time in his last four starts, Nola didn't walk a batter. The only mistake on his ledger Sunday was a three-run home run to Garrett Hampson in the fifth inning. Nola remains without a win in his last nine starts, though he's taken only two losses in that span despite failing to complete six innings in seven of those outings. For the year, the right-hander has a 4.58 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 202:35 K:BB in 163 innings. He'll try to get back in the win column next weekend in a projected road start versus the Mets.
Sep 7 2021Nola (7-8) took the loss Tuesday versus Milwaukee. He allowed three runs on six hits and a hit batter while striking out six in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While the right-hander wasn't all that effective Tuesday, his Philadelphia teammates supported him with just five hits and a walk in the contest. Nola has failed to complete six innings in six of his last seven starts, with his 8.2-inning effort versus San Diego on Aug. 21 the notable exception in that span. He's posted a 4.57 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 192:35 K:BB across 157.2 innings overall. Nola projects for a home start versus Colorado this weekend.
Sep 2 2021Nola surrendered six runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out five across four innings during Thursday's win over the Nationals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola continued his hot-cold season with a rough outing against the Nationals. The right-hander left the game in line for the loss but was rescued by his offense in the eighth inning. Nola gave up a pair of two-out homers to Lane Thomas and Juan Soto, raising his season total to 13. Meanwhile, it was the third time over his last five starts that he failed to complete at least five innings. Nola will look to rebound during his next tentative start Tuesday at Milwaukee.
Sep 1 2021Nola and the Phillies won't play the Nationals on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will instead conclude their series with a nine-inning regulation game Thursday, which was slated to be an off day for both Philadelphia and Washington. According to Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia, the Phillies will push Nola back a day in the schedule to start Thursday's make-up contest, but the other members of the rotation shouldn't be affected by the postponement.
Aug 27 2021Nola allowed two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out seven in 5.1 innings in Friday's win over Arizona. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola lasted 8.2 innings during his last start, but he needed 93 pitches to get through 5.1 innings Friday. The right-hander has lasted at least five innings during six of his eight starts since the All-Star break, and he's recorded a 3.80 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 55:10 K:BB in 47.1 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Washington on Wednesday.
Aug 15 2021Nola (7-7) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four in 4.1 innings to take the loss against the Reds on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's outing got off to a rough start when he gave up a leadoff home run to Jonathan India, and he ultimately allowed runs in three of the first five innings. As a result, the right-hander was tagged with the loss after he had settled for no-decisions in each of his last three starts. Nola now has a 1-2 record since the All-Star break, and he's recorded a 4.32 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 33.1 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to take the mound on the road against San Diego on Saturday.
Aug 10 2021Nola allowed one hit and no walks while striking out seven across four scoreless innings Tuesday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola matched Max Scherzer in a pitcher's duel early in the game. However, his start was cut short by a lengthy rain delay. Even so, Nola got in enough work to show that he was in for a bounceback effort after surrendering five earned runs across five innings in his last outing. Despite that stumble, Nola has allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of his last four starts after he struggled for the majority of a seven-start stretch from early June to late July. He'll look to stay on track to close the season and improve on his 4.35 ERA across 130.1 innings on the campaign.
Aug 5 2021Nola allowed five runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in a no-decision against Washington on Thursday. He also had seven strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was sitting on a 2-0 lead through three innings but gave up an RBI single to Carter Kieboom and then hit Tres Barrera with the bases loaded in the fourth. The big blast came on Josh Bell's three-run homer in the fifth, which was the seventh long ball offered up by Nola in his last six starts. The 28-year-old Nola continues to endure an up-and-down campaign, logging a 4.49 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with a 152:28 K:BB in 126.1 innings. He's tentatively scheduled for a home start against the Dodgers next week.
Jul 31 2021Nola allowed two runs on three hits and a walk over six innings in Saturday's no-decision against the Pirates. He logged five strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the second consecutive quality start turned in by Nola, who registered zeroes in every inning but the third, when Kevin Newman tripled in a run and Ben Gamel followed with an RBI single. The 28-year-old Nola has been uncharacteristically inconsistent in 2021, but he appears to be locked in again heading into August, having posted 14 strikeouts against just one walk with three earned runs allowed over his last two appearances (14.2 innings). He's tentatively scheduled to face Washington on the road in his next start.
Jul 25 2021Nola (7-6) allowed one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine in 8.2 innings to earn the win over Atlanta on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola came within one strike of tossing a complete game Sunday, but he gave up a solo homer to Austin Riley in the top of the ninth and was removed from the contest afterward. However, the right-hander still returned to the win column after Ranger Suarez recorded a strikeout to end the game. Nola has alternated wins and losses in his last four starts, and he's recorded a 5.84 ERA and 33:2 K:BB in 24.2 innings during that time. He tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Pittsburgh on Friday.
Jul 21 2021Nola (6-6) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Yankees after allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning five across 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was activated ahead from the COVID-19 list ahead of this game but was far from effective, as he needed 101 pitches (55 strikes) and couldn't even complete six innings. His recent numbers have not been encouraging either, as he has given up at least four runs in each of his last three starts. He owns an inflated 6.10 ERA across eight outings since the beginning of June and will aim to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for the weekend series against the Braves at home.
Jul 20 2021Nola was activated from the COVID-19 injured list as expected ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was supposed to start the final game of the first half but wound up getting scratched due to contact tracing. He'll wind up getting an unplanned two-week break but shouldn't be facing significant restrictions given that he didn't test positive for the virus himself. He'll look to find some consistency at the start of the second half after an up-and-down five-start run prior to the break which saw him strike out eight or more batters four times but also allow six or more runs twice.
Jul 16 2021Nola will return from the COVID-19 injured list to start Tuesday against the Yankees, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was scratched from his scheduled start on the final day of the first half due to contact tracing. He never tested positive for the virus himself, however, so his performance shouldn't be significantly impacted going forward.
Jul 11 2021Nola was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Sunday as a result of contact tracing, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was scratched from his start Sunday but has not tested positive for COVID-19. Assuming he continues to test negative and is able to pass through the league's health and safety protocols, he could return shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 6 2021Nola (6-5) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in six innings, earning the win over the Cubs on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola wasn't his sharpest Tuesday, allowing a three-run rally in the third inning and a solo home run to Javier Baez in the sixth. The right-hander benefited from a big performance from Philadelphia's offense, which was especially helpful since the bullpen gave quite a bit of an 11-run lead back. Nola has given up four or more runs in four of his last six outings, and he's surrendered 21 runs in 31 innings in that span. For the season, he has a 4.53 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 126:23 K:BB through 101.1 innings. He lines up for one more start before the All-Star break, which would likely be during this weekend's series in Boston.
Jul 1 2021Nola (5-5) took the loss Wednesday against the Marlins, surrendering seven runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out 11 without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander seemed to have things well in hand as the Phillies took a 5-2 lead into the fifth inning, but things fell apart for Nola after he was charged with a one-out balk that sent Magneuris Sierra to second base. Even so, three of the runs on Nola's ledger scored after he'd exited the game. It's the second time in his last three outings he's coughed up at least six runs, sending his ERA soaring to 4.44, but his 118:22 K:BB through 95.1 innings on the year -- including a 23:1 mark in his last two starts -- remains impressive.
Jun 25 2021Nola allowed two hits and a walk while striking out 12 in 5.1 scoreless innings in Friday's loss to the Mets in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola hit the leadoff batter and gave up a double to begin Friday's matinee, but he struck out the next 10 batters he faced, which matched Tom Seaver's major-league record, Sarah Langs of MLB.com reports. While the right-hander drove in the Phillies' lone run with a double of his own in the top of the fifth inning, the Mets responded later in the game and won in extra innings. Although Nola gave up six runs in 2.1 innings during his last start, he's now had two scoreless appearances in his last three outings. The 28-year-old tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Jun 19 2021Nola didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 13-6 win over the Giants, coughing up six runs on six hits and three walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out only one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mike Yastrzemski and Brandon Belt both took Nola deep in the worst outing of the year for the right-hander, but the Phillies' offense did more than enough damage to get him off the hook for a loss. Nola will carry a 4.22 ERA and 95:21 K:BB through 85.1 innings into his next start.
Jun 13 2021Nola (5-4) allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine in 7.2 scoreless innings to earn the win against the Yankees on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola had given up at least three runs in each of his last two starts, but he returned to form Sunday with his first scoreless outing in nearly two months. The right-hander didn't allow more than one baserunner in any inning against the Yankees and has now earned wins in two of his last three appearances. He's posted a 3.69 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 83 innings across 14 starts this year. Nola tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against San Francisco on Saturday.
Jun 8 2021Nola surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings during Tuesday's 9-5 loss to Atlanta. He had seven strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old generated 15 swings-and-misses and threw 62 of 89 pitches for strikes Tuesday, but he served up two homers and struggled to keep Atlanta off the basepaths. Nola has a 4.06 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 85:17 K:BB across 75.1 innings this season.
Jun 1 2021Nola (4-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Reds after allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning two across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola didn't have major problems earning his fourth win of the season, but things could've easily gone different for him -- the eight hits he allowed are the second-highest mark of the season. In fact, he's given up at least seven hits in three of his last four starts while allowing at least three runs three times during that stretch, so he's still far from pitching at his best. The right-hander is scheduled to start again during next week's home series against Atlanta.
May 26 2021Nola allowed a run on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts in six innings versus Miami on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola pitched well enough to win, but Miami's eighth-inning rally against reliever Sam Coonrod denied Philadelphia's ace a decision. The right-handed starter has a 3.72 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 76:13 K:BB across 65.1 innings. The three walks he issued Wednesday marked a season high. He's now gone four starts without a win. The 27-year-old will look to correct that trend next week in Cincinnati.
May 21 2021Nola (3-4) took the loss Friday against the Red Sox after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk while fanning nine across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola's nine strikeouts ended just one away from tying his season-best mark in that department, but he's also allowed at least three earned runs in three straight outings while losing in each one of those appearances. The star right-hander will try to bounce back in his next start, scheduled for next week on the road against the Marlins.
May 15 2021Nola (3-3) allowed three earned runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out eight across 6.2 innings, taking the loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed a two out home run to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the first inning. All three runs came in the first two innings before Nola settled in. The 28-year-old has 3.64 ERA and a 10.1 K/9 in 54.1 innings. It's not Nola's greatest start to a season, but he's still keeping the Phillies in every game he starts. He's doing a great job limiting free passes with a 1.5 BB/9. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Red Sox.
May 9 2021Nola (3-2) allowed five earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four across four innings to record the loss Sunday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola struggled early against Philadelphia, throwing 39 of 58 pitches for strikes. He never really settled in all night, allowing a home run to Andrew McCutchen on the first pitch of the game. Nola now has a 3.59 ERA with a 53:8 K:BB across 47.2 innings.
May 4 2021Nola (3-1) allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out 10 across six innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed hits to two of the first three batters he faced, accounting for the only earned run of the start. He settled in quickly thereafter to rack up his second double-digit strikeout performance of the season. Nola has delivered as expected through seven outings, maintaining a 2.89 ERA with a 49:7 K:BB across 43.2 innings. He's projected to take his next turn through the rotation Sunday at Atlanta.
Apr 29 2021Nola allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All three runs against Nola scored on one swing of the bat from Matt Carpenter. Nola had beaten the Cardinals back on April 18 in a 10-strikeout shutout, and while he couldn't get the win this time around, it was another quality effort. The right-hander now has a stellar 39:5 K:BB over 37.2 innings this season, supporting his low-3.00s ERA. Nola tentatively lines up for two starts next week with the Phillies slated to play seven games.
Apr 24 2021Nola (2-1) earned the win Saturday against the Rockies after giving up four runs on six hits and a walk across seven innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola might have allowed a season-high four runs, but he still earned his second win of the season while also performing at the plate -- he went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. The star right-hander owns a strong 2.84 ERA after five starts and is slated to take the ball next week against the Cardinals.
Apr 18 2021Nola (1-1) allowed two hits and no walks while striking out 10 in nine scoreless innings to earn the win against the Cardinals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was tagged with the loss in his last outing, but he bounced back with a dominant performance against St. Louis on Sunday. The right-hander gave up singles in the second and eighth innings, but he didn't encounter much trouble in the first complete game of his career. Through his first four starts of the season, Nola has posted a 2.19 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 24.2 innings. He lines up to make his next start of the season against the Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field on Saturday.
Apr 13 2021Nola (0-1) took the loss in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings as the Phillies fell 4-0. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander didn't pitch poorly as he threw 59 of 92 pitches for strikes, but Philly's bats couldn't solve Marcus Stroman, saddling Nola with the loss. He'll take a 3.45 ERA and strong 18:3 K:BB through 15.2 innings into his next start, set for Sunday at home against the Cardinals.
Apr 7 2021Nola didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-2 win over the Mets, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was mostly able to handle the traffic he put on the bases, but Nola ran his pitch count up to 92 (59 strikes) and was forced to exit before he could benefit from another big offensive showing by the Phillies. Nola has a 2.53 ERA and 11:2 K:BB through his first 10.2 innings this season, and he'll look for his first win of the season in a road rematch with the Mets on Tuesday.
Mar 22 2021Nola will start on Opening Day against Atlanta on April 1, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The announcement comes as no surprise, as Nola has been the Phillies' ace for several years now. He's coming off a year in which he posted his second-best ERA (3.28), second-best WHIP (1.08) and best strikeout rate (33.2 percent). The Opening Day start will be his fourth in a row, and he'll become the first Phillies pitcher to record a streak that long since Steve Carlton made 10 consecutive Opening Day starts from 1977 to 1986.
Mar 16 2021Nola is testing out a cutter this spring, Tom Moore of the Bucks County Courier Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola threw the pitch a few times in his outing Tuesday against Toronto, though not nearly frequently enough that it can be blamed for his disastrous line, as he allowed six runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. Nola doesn't exactly need to add anything on the back of a season in which he struck out a career-high 33.2 percent of opposing batters en route to a 3.28 ERA, but more weapons certainly can't hurt. There's no guarantee the cutter develops into anything usable for Nola this season, and he doesn't intend to use it very frequently, but it's possible the offering slightly improves his profile if it does indeed turn into a useful pitch.
Mar 13 2021Nola has allowed four runs on eight hits across six spring innings, striking out four while walking one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not the best start to camp for the 27-year-old righty, but he'll still have a few turns in the rotation to get into regular-season form before his presumed Opening Day start. Two unimpressive spring outings isn't nearly enough to erase the dominance he demonstrated last season, when he cruised to a 3.28 ERA and 1.08 WHIP while striking out a career-high 33.2 percent of opposing batters, a mark that placed him sixth among qualified starters, one spot ahead of Gerrit Cole.
Sep 27 2020Nola (5-5) took the loss Sunday against the Rays, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks across 3.2 innings. He fanned six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was called upon to keep the Phillies' playoff chances alive on the season's final day and the right-hander struggled under the intense circumstances. After striking out a pair in a clean first inning, the Rays got to Nola for a run in the second. The 27-year-old bounced back to strike out the first two batters he faced in the third, but then allowed a walk and three hits to get tagged with two more runs. He was pulled after issuing two walks in the fourth. Despite the disappointing finish to his campaign, Nola finishes the year with 96 punch outs and a solid 3.28 ERA.
Sep 22 2020Nola (5-4) took the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outing qualified as a complete game, as the Nats didn't need to come to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. It was Nola's fourth quality start in his last six outings, a stretch during which he's posted a 3.03 ERA and 50:13 K:BB through 38.2 innings. The Phillies got swept in the twin bill to bump them out of a wild-card spot, but if they can rally over the next few days, Nola's final start of the regular season Sunday in Tampa Bay could be a huge one for the club.
Sep 17 2020Nola did not factor in the decision against the Mets on Thursday, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola got off to a rough start in the outing, allowing three runs on a pair of walks and two hits in the first inning. He settled down until the sixth frame, when he surrendered a Pete Alonso solo home run and was tagged with another earned run after departing the contest. Due to an even less effective performance by opposing starter Seth Lugo, Nola managed to escape with a no-decision, though the five earned runs he allowed were his most this season. Despite the less-than-stellar outing, Nola stills holds a 2.92 ERA on the campaign, which he'll look to improve upon in his next scheduled start at Washington on Tuesday.
Sep 15 2020Nola's next start will come Thursday against the Mets, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Zack Wheeler (finger) has been unavailable for most of the past week but will be reinserted into the rotation Wednesday, pushing Nola's scheduled start back one day, though he'll still face the same opponent. Across his past four starts Nola has a 1.65 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 37:6 K:BB over 27.1 innings.
Sep 12 2020Nola (5-3) picked up the win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Marlins, scattering three hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out 10 without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It goes down in the books as Nola's first career complete game, even if it were only seven innings and not the traditional nine. He tossed 70 of 106 pitches for strikes, and he retired the first seven batters he faced, six of them via strikeout, before Jazz Chisholm reached base on an HBP. Nola will take a 2.40 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 77:13 K:BB through 56.1 innings into his next outing Wednesday, at home against the Mets.
Sep 6 2020Nola (4-3) allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 5.1 innings and was charged with the loss Sunday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola lasted eight innings in his last start, as he was dominant against the Nationals, but he was far less effective Sunday, allowing runs in all but one of the innings that he pitched. He was able to stay hot in the strikeout column, but he struggled to keep the basepaths clear. The right-hander now has a 2.74 ERA and 67:13 K:BB over 49.1 innings this season. He'll attempt to right the ship on the road Friday as part of a doubleheader against the Marlins.
Sep 1 2020Nola (4-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Nationals after giving up two hits with nine strikeouts and three walks over eight scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old delivered his best outing of the season as he completely shut down Washington's offense. Nola has a 2.45 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 57:12 K:BB through 43 innings and will look to replicate that performance Sunday against the Mets.
Aug 27 2020Nola (3-2) allowed two runs on five hits (one home run) and two walks while striking out eight across seven innings as he earned the win over the Nationals on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola allowed a second-inning home run to Juan Soto and later ran into some trouble in the fourth after walking the first two batters, allowing Howie Kendrick to drive in Asdrubal Cabrera from second. Nola was able to escape with minimal damage and finish with a win after the Phillies put up two runs of in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Nola now sports a 3.00 ERA and an impressive 48:9 K:BB across 36 innings as he is scheduled next to take the mound Monday against the Nationals again.
Aug 22 2020Nola (2-2) allowed four runs on six hits -- including two home runs -- and three walks while striking out three batters in 2.2 innings in a loss to the Braves on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola had some trouble finding the strike zone Friday, and when he did, the Braves took advantage. His three walks and six hits were the most he's allowed in a start this season, and his three strikeouts represent a season low. Nola has a tough road matchup coming up next against the Nationals.
Aug 15 2020Nola (2-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 6-2 victory over the Mets, allowing three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got into a bit of trouble early, putting Mets on second and third with two outs in the first inning, but Nola then struck out Pete Alonso and didn't allow another runner past second base the rest of the way. He sat down the final 13 batters he faced and finished his night having thrown 66 of 102 pitches for strikes. Nola will take a sparkling 2.05 ERA, 0.65 WHIP and 37:4 K:BB through 26.1 innings into his next outing Friday in Atlanta.
Aug 10 2020Nola (1-1) allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out 10 over eight innings in a win over the Braves on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies put up 10 runs in the first two innings against Atlanta and Nola went into cruise control, with the only blemish being a solo homer off the bat of Travis d'Arnaud. Nola has made just three starts -- he was pushed back earlier in the season after the team's COVID-19 scare -- but he has been great when on the mound (10 hits, 27:2 K:BB in 19.1 innings). The right-hander seems to be getting back to his 2018 ace form and will look to keep it going later this week against the Mets.
Aug 5 2020Nola allowed one earned run on three hits and no walks while striking out 12 across six innings in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola dominated the Yankees in his first start in 12 days, with the lone run he surrendered coming on a solo shot by Luke Voit. He generated 19 swinging strikes and 18 called strikes on 88 total pitches to match a career-high in strikeouts. This was only Nola's second start of the season due to a realigned schedule, though he has struck out 19 and walked only one in 11.1 innings of work. He's scheduled to take the mound again Monday against Atlanta.
Aug 4 2020Nola will start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was originally set to start Tuesday's contest, but the game was postponed due to Tropical Storm Isaias making landfall. Due to the ripple effects from Miami's COVID-19 outbreak, Nola has started only once this season and allowed four runs with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Aug 3 2020Nola won't make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Yankees, as the game has been postponed due to threats of severe weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees and Phillies are expected to be able to get Monday's game in but will move Tuesday's contest to Wednesday, where it will be part of a doubleheader in Philadelphia. The Phillies haven't officially announced their plans, but Nola will presumably start one of those two games. Nola has started just once this season, as the Phillies were held out of action for the entirety of last week while the league waited to determine whether or not they'd been caught up in the Marlins' coronavirus outbreak.
Jul 30 2020Nola's scheduled start against the Blue Jays on Saturday has been postponed, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies announced that a pair of staff members tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week, prompting the team to shut down its stadium and postpone this weekend's series against the Blue Jays. It's unclear when Nola will get the ball next.
Jul 29 2020Nola won't start before Saturday at the earliest, with all Phillies games prior to that date postponed, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After starting Friday on Opening Day, Nola would have lined up to start Wednesday against the Yankees, but the entirety of that four-game series was postponed while the league waits to see whether or not the Phillies have been caught up in the Marlins' coronavirus outbreak that has seen approximately half of the team's active roster test positive for the virus. As of Wednesday, no Phillie has tested positive, but the league is being understandably cautious as the virus can sometimes take a few days to show up in test results. The first game of the Phillies' weekend series against the Blue Jays was postponed from Friday and move to part of a doubleheader Saturday, when Nola will presumably make his next start.
Jul 24 2020Nola (0-1) allowed four runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Marlins on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: One of the runs against Nola scored after he exited the game. It still qualifies as a letdown in a favorable spot at home, though the seven strikeouts against one walk suggest there is little reason to panic. Nola will face a tough test his time out: the Yankees in the Bronx.
Jul 20 2020Nola will be the Phillies' Opening Day starter Friday against the Marlins, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A typical rest schedule should see Nola face the Marlins twice in his first two starts, with a much tougher assignment against the Yankees sandwiched in between. Nola's ability to pitch on Opening Day had been in some doubt, as his arrival in camp was delayed due to the fact that he'd been exposed to someone who had tested positive for COVID-19. Whether or not he'll be able to handle a full starter's workload right away is unclear, but he'll be on the mound for at least a fair number of innings against one of the weaker lineups in the league.
Jul 13 2020Manager Joe Girardi said Nola is definitely a possibility to start Opening Day, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was a late arrival at the Phillies' camp because he had been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, but he has cleared the MLB's testing protocol. The right-hander pitched well during Monday's intrasquad game, while teammate Zack Wheeler remains uncertain if he'll rejoin the team from paternity. Nola went 12-7 in his fifth campaign in Philadelphia last season, posting a 3.87 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 229:80 K:BB across 34 starts.
Jul 6 2020Nola may not be ready to start the Phillies' season opener July 24 against the Marlins, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola arrived at Phillies camp Monday and explained that his absence from the team's first few workouts was due to the fact that he had been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19 but that he'd never tested positive himself. Still, his time spent in isolation may mean he's not quite ready to go for the start of the season, which is less than three weeks away. The pitcher himself said earlier in the day that he expects to make the Opening Day start, but manager Joe Girardi said Monday that it's still too early to make that decision.
Jul 4 2020Correcting an earlier report, Nola hasn't been placed on the COVID-19 injured list but remains away from the team because he either tested positive for the virus, showed symptoms, came in contact with someone who tested positive or has missing/inconclusive test results, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old fits the criteria to move to the COVID-19 IL and could be placed there in the coming days, but for now he'll simply stay away from the team. Even if he shifts to the specialized IL, it won't necessarily mean he produced a positive test. Regardless, Nola's availability for the start of the season will remain cloudy until he's cleared to report to camp.
Mar 12 2020Nola (illness) completed a bullpen session Thursday consisting of around 35-to-40 pitches, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was scratched ahead of his scheduled Grapefruit League start earlier this week after coming down with the stomach flu, but he's feeling better now and doesn't expect the missed outing to impact his readiness for Opening Day. The right-hander acknowledged he'll likely make one fewer spring start than initially planned, but he believes he'll need just one more Grapefruit League outing and a simulated game to get where he needs to be from a workload standpoint. The Phillies haven't officially named Nola their Opening Day starter, but there's little doubt he'll be on the bump March 26 against the Marlins if the coaching staff thinks he's ready to go.
Mar 10 2020Nola (illness) is expected to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Philadelphia manager Joe Girardi mentioned that Nola felt better Tuesday and that the plan is for his right-hander to pitch a simulated game Saturday if things continue to trend upward. A flu bug was responsible for the 26-year-old having to skip his last turn in the rotation against the Yankees on Monday. Nola has made three starts (lasting a total of eight innings) thus far this spring and is on pace to gather two more starts before Opening Day arrives.
Mar 9 2020Nola (illness) won't return to camp until Thursday and could start Friday against the Tigers, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A flu bug caused Nola to be scratched from his start Monday against the Yankees and will wind up forcing him to skip his turn entirely rather than simply pushing his start back a day or two. He's made three starts (lasting a total of eight innings) thus far this spring and should have time to make two more before Opening Day, though the lost time could potentially mean he's not quite ready to pitch as deep into games as usual for his first start or two.
Sep 26 2019Nola will not make another start this season, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was originally scheduled to start Sunday's season finale against the Marlins, but with the Phillies no longer vying for a playoff spot, the team decided to shut down its ace. The right-hander will finish the season 12-7 with a 3.87 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 229:80 K:BB across 34 starts (202.1 innings).
Sep 24 2019Nola (12-7) allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out nine across 5.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola pitched well through five innings, racking up seven strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs. However, things took a turn for the worst when he returned for the sixth frame, as he walked two batters and loaded the bases before being pulled. All three runs came around to score one batter later when Trea Turner took Jared Hughes deep for a grand slam. While Nola wasn't helped by his bullpen, the start still marks the fourth time in his last five outings he's allowed four or more earned runs. That's inflated his ERA to 3.87 on season. Currently, Nola is projected to close out the campaign on Sunday in a good matchup against Miami.
Sep 19 2019Nola (12-6) allowed five earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four across five innings to take the loss Thursday against the Braves. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola surrendered two home runs, accounting for three of his five earned runs. It was the first time he surrendered multiple home runs in a start since July 28, a span of 10 starts. However, he's now allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last four appearances. That's spiked his ERA to 3.75 across 196.2 innings for the campaign. He'll look to end strong in his final start of the regular season, currently projected to come on Tuesday at Washington.
Sep 14 2019Nola struck out nine batters in seven innings Saturday against the Red Sox, allowing a single run on four hits and three walks. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Nola was locked into a duel with Eduardo Rodriguez, trading scoreless frames through the first six innings. He finally allowed a run on a Christian Vazquez double in the top of the seventh, though the Phillies offense would come through with a run to avoid handing him an undeserved loss. The outing lowered Nola's ERA to 3.62 and brought him to within eight strikeouts of his career-high total of 224.
Sep 9 2019Nola (12-5) allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and seven strikeouts across six innings while taking a loss against the Braves on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 26-year-old has struggled with his control during his last two starts, and it's led to him yielding nine runs in the last 10 frames. He's walked seven hitters during that stretch, but despite those control issues, Nola has at least six punchouts in his last six outings. He owns a 3.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 207 strikeouts in 184.2 innings this season. Nola is scheduled to pitch next at home against the Red Sox on Saturday.
Sep 4 2019Nola didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Reds, giving up five runs on five hits and three walks over four innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Four of the five hits off Nola went for extra bases, including a solo shot by Joey Votto in the first inning. The right-hander will take a 3.63 ERA and 200:67 K:BB through 178.2 innings into his next start Monday, at home against Atlanta.

Jul 24 2018Nola did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's 16-inning win over the Dodgers. He allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out five and issuing two walks. It was Nola's worst start since allowing four runs over 4.1 innings at Milwaukee in mid-June, and is only the fourth time in 21 starts he failed to complete six innings. It certainly wasn't a bad start for the 25-year-old, but it speaks to the fantastic season he's put together thus far. Nola has a 2.42 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 136 strikeouts across 134 innings as he prepares for a tough matchup at Boston on Monday.
Jul 14 2018Nola (12-3) took the loss Saturday as the Phillies fell 2-0 to the Marlins, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings while striking out five. The only two runs in the game scored in the bottom of the first inning, and while Nola settled into a groove after that, the Phillies' offense couldn't get anything going. The right-hander has now turned in five straight quality starts and 16 on the season, and he'll carry a stellar 2.30 ERA into the All-Star break.
Jul 10 2018Nola improved to 12-2 on the season after pitching seven scoreless innings against the Mets on Monday night. He struck out 10 while allowing just one hit and one walk. The start was probably Nola's best of the season and made him the National League wins leader. He helped himself out at the plate, too, driving in all three Philadelphia runs with a bases-clearing, two-out double in the fifth inning. Following the big hit, he came right back out and struck out the side, part of a stretch of 18 straight outs. Nola will next start Saturday or Sunday against the Marlins before heading off to the All-Star Game.
Jul 4 2018Nola pitched seven strong innings Wednesday against the Orioles, improving to 11-2 on the season after allowing just a single run on seven hits and a pair of walks while striking out nine batters.Nola allowed at least one baserunner in every inning but never allowed more than two, limiting the damage to just a third-inning RBI double by Adam Jones. The end result was yet another solid outing for the Phillies' ace, who has tossed a quality start 14 of his last 16 times on the mound. He'll next take the hill Monday against the Mets.
Jun 28 2018Nola (10-2) allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight across 7.2 innings to earn the win Thursday against the Nationals.Nola tuned in a workhorse effort and earned his 10th win Thursday, throwing 114 pitches while limiting the Nationals to just one extra-base hit. After allowing three baserunners in his first 1.1 innings of work, he sat down 11 consecutive Nationals spanning from the second inning to the fifth. With the win, Nola became the third pitcher in the National League -- joining Max Scherzer and Jon Lester -- to reach the 10 win mark and also ranks among the league leaders in innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and WHIP.
Jun 23 2018Nola (9-2) struck out five and picked up the win in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Nationals, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings. The right-hander settled down after Washington jumped on him for two runs in the bottom of the first inning, throwing 55 of 83 pitches for strikes en route to his 12th quality start of the season. Nola will carry a 2.58 ERA into his next outing Thursday, a rematch with the Nats back in Philadelphia.
Jun 23 2018Nola (9-2) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Nationals, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings while striking out five.
Jun 17 2018Nola threw 4.1 innings Sunday allowing four runs on four walks and seven hits. He struck out four and allowed one home run in the 10-9 victory. It wasn't the sharpest outing but at least Nola avoided a loss with his team's strong offensive performance. Even with the rough day, the 25-year-old has a strong 2.55 ERA and a 94:26 K:BB in 95.1 innings. He'll have a tough matchup next weekend in Washington.
Jun 13 2018Nola (8-2) struck out 10 over 6.2 one-run innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Rockies. He allowed four hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts.Nola was exceptional throughout this start, allowing just five total men to reach (one hit batsman) and only conceding a run when the bullpen let one of his runners across with two outs in the seventh. It was also the second time this season that Nola struck out double-digit batters without surrendering a walk. The 25-year-old has finally made the jump this season and is evolving into one of the better right-handed pitchers in the game, posting a 2.27 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP -- both of which would comfortably be career bests. He's next scheduled to take the ball Sunday against the Brewers.
Jun 6 2018Nola didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Cubs, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks over six innings while striking out six.The right-hander threw only 57 of 92 pitches for strikes en route to tying his season high in walks, but Nola was still in line for his eighth win of the year before a late implosion by the Phillies' bullpen. He'll carry a sparkling 2.35 ERA and 80:22 K:BB through 84.1 innings into his next outing Tuesday at home against the Rockies.
May 31 2018Nola (7-2) allowed one earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out seven across seven innings to earn the win Thursday against the Dodgers.Nola got off to a sluggish start, needing 25 pitches to complete his first inning of work, but followed that up by not allowing a baserunner in four of his next six innings. He threw a lot of strikes -- 73 of his 111 pitches were in the zone -- and he forced eight groundballs on 14 balls in play. This effort marked the 10th consecutive time he has worked at least six innings in a start and he remains among the National League leaders in most stats.
May 26 2018Nola gave up one run on one hit and three walks while striking out 10 in 6.2 innings Saturday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision.Unfortunately, Jaime Garcia pitched Nola to a draw before the Phillies offense broke that tie in the eighth inning. Nola wasn't missing a ton of bats early on, but he now has 39 strikeouts over his last 33 innings (five starts). He has 67 strikeouts in 71.1 innings on the season. Nola has established himself as a bonafide SP1, and the only quibble anyone can have is that he has yet to eclipse the 170-inning mark in a big-league season.
May 20 2018Nola (6-2) took the loss against the Cardinals on Sunday, giving up four earned runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking one as the Phillies eventually lost 5-1.Nola wasn't at his absolute best but still pitched fairly well against St. Louis, missing a quality start by one run only to be outdueled thanks to a brilliant outing from counterpart Jack Flaherty. He's still having a phenomenal season, with a 2.37 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP through 64.2 innings and he's pitching like a legitimate top-end fantasy starter to start his 2018 campaign. He's scheduled to take the mound next against the Blue Jays at home next Saturday.
May 14 2018Nola (6-1) tossed six one-run innings while earning the win Sunday against the Mets, allowing nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts.Nola was constantly working around trouble on the afternoon, with the only run on his ledger coming on a solo home run from Yoenis Cespedes in the sixth inning. He threw 70 percent of his pitches for strikes, including first-pitch strikes to 16 of 25 batters, and got nine groundball outs to help minimize the damage. It wasn't his prettiest start, but Nola has a 1.99 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP heading into Saturday's start against the Cardinals.
May 13 2018Nola will remain on his normal pitching schedule and start Sunday's game against the Mets, Tim Britton of The Athletic New York reports. After Saturday's game in Philadelphia was postponed due to inclement weather, it wasn't certain whether manager Gabe Kapler would push Zach Eflin and the rest of the rotation back a day in the schedule or turn to Nola for the series finale, as had been originally planned. It appears as though the Phillies have officially settled on Nola, who turned in perhaps his best start of the season his last time out Tuesday against the Giants, striking out 12 over seven innings of one-run ball.
May 8 2018Nola (5-1) allowed one earned run on five hits while walking none and striking out 12 across seven innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Giants.Nola's sole earned run came in the second inning after he allowed a single and double to lead off the inning. After that, he allowed just one baserunner past first base. This marks the fourth consecutive start that he has pitched at least seven innings and he has earned a win in all four of them. Through eight starts, he ranks among the National League leaders in most traditional fantasy categories, including wins, ERA, strikeouts and WHIP.
May 2 2018Nola (4-1) picked up the win over the Marlins on Wednesday, giving up four hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings while striking out seven. The right-hander retired 17 straight batters at one point, firing 67 of 101 pitches for strikes and generating 16 swinging strikes from the overmatched Marlins hitters, Nola's now delivered five straight quality starts, a streak he'll look to continue Monday at home against the Giants.
Apr 27 2018Nola (3-1) picked up the win over the Braves on Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out four. The right-hander threw 69 of 101 pitches for strikes in producing his fourth straight quality start. Nola will take a sparkling 2.58 ERA and 28:10 K:BB through 38.1 innings into his next start Wednesday in Miami.
Apr 21 2018Nola (2-1) threw seven innings Saturday against the Pirates, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out nine en route to the win.The young right-hander exhibited excellent control in this one, as he threw 75 of his 103 pitches for strikes and did not walk a batter. Nola was tagged for a leadoff home run by Sean Rodriguez, but dominated the rest of the way, allowing no extra base hits after the first inning. Nola now has a 2.30 ERA on the season and will look to improve it further in his next start Friday against the Braves.
Apr 16 2018Nola (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts over six innings in a tough loss Monday against Atlanta.Nola has now thrown two quality starts in a row after failing to get through six innings in his first two starts, but the Phillies offense gave him just minimal support. He sits at 1-1 despite a 2.22 ERA in four outings, and it remains to be seen if the Phillies can be trusted to deliver the wins even if Nola brings the goods from the mound.
Apr 10 2018Nola (1-0) allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six over eight innings in a win over the Reds on Tuesday. He issued two walks to Billy Hamilton of all people but pounded the strike zone most of the night and had the curveball working. Manager Gabe Kapler let him go in this one, leaving Nola out to throw 103 pitches (70 strikes) after limiting him to 68 and 87 pitches in his first two starts. His 13:8 K:BB through 18.1 innings this season doesn't look all that great, but the 24-year-old has been tough to square up (.161 BAA) and it seems the reins are off. Nola looks like a top-15 starter rest of season, with upside.
Apr 4 2018Nola allowed two runs on four hits and four walks across five innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Wednesday. He struck out four.Nola struggled with his command early and often Wednesday. After walking Brandon Nimmo to open the game, the 24-year-old caught a little too much of the plate with a curveball resulting in a Yoenis Cespedes two-run homer. He didn't concede another run over the next four innings, though he allowed at least one baserunner in each frame (two hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch). Despite his struggles, it was nice to see manager Gabe Kapler let him throw 87 pitches after prematurely pulling him in the season opener. Nola will look to bounce back in his next start, which is set for Tuesday against the Reds.
Mar 29 2018Nola completed 5.1 innings Thursday against the Braves, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out three.Nola was curiously pulled after just 5.1 innings despite being buoyed to a 5-0 lead and having thrown just 68 pitches. First year manager Gabe Kapler hasn't been afraid of challenging established norms early in his tenure, so it is a possibility that he wants to keep Aaron Nola, and his other starters, on a limited pitch count all season. That will be something to monitor over Nola's next few starts, as his performance was strong today but if he is not allowed to pitch deep into games his fantasy value will be hurt.
Feb 25 2018Manager Gabe Kapler announced that Nola will be the Opening Day starting pitcher for the Phillies, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The news hardly comes as a surprise, but it's nonetheless good to see official confirmation from Kapler. Nola had a 3.54 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 168 innings (27 starts) with 184 strikeouts in 2017. The 24-year-old's strikeout rate and quality 3.27 FIP leaves a solid indication for potential improvement as the Phillies top starter this season.
Feb 5 2018Nola has signed a $573,000 split contract with Philadelphia, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.Nola spent almost all of last season in the majors, pitching 168.0 innings and accumulating a 3.54 ERA. The 24-year-old threw an average of 9.86 strikeouts per nine innings -- for a total of 184 strikeouts on the year -- and he had an elite FIP of 3.31. This suggests that Nola could have an even better fantasy year on the bump should Philadelphia's offense provide him with more runs, after a 12-11 record in 27 starts in 2017.
Sep 25 2017Nola (12-11) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks across six innings while taking the loss Monday against the Nationals. He struck out nine.Nola allowed a two-run home run to Michael Taylor in the second inning, but he was extremely effective the rest of the way and came away with his third consecutive start. His teammates weren't able to pick him up for the win, but that didn't stop Nola from running his K:BB to an outstanding 36:8 over 25.1 innings in his last four starts. He is not currently schedule to pitch again this season due to the team's six-man rotation, meaning his second season could be in the books unless an alteration is made. If so, the 24-year-old's arrow will be pointed straight up heading into 2018 after posting a 3.54 ERA and 184 strikeouts across 168 innings this year.
Sep 19 2017Nola (12-10) got the win Tuesday against the Dodgers after allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts over seven innings.Nola has now posted quality starts in 13 of his past 17 outings while adding a fabulous 128:31 K:BB over 111 innings in that span. He fell behind 2-0 through four innings, but Nola's ability to work deep into the contest paid off when Philadelphia's four-run seventh put him in position for the victory. The 24-year-old ace next takes the mound Monday against Washington, and should be a solid option despite the tough matchup considering he's 8-2 in his last 10 home starts.
Sep 13 2017Nola (11-10) picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out 11 batters in seven innings Wednesday against the Marlins.Nola has been sharp in a pair of starts since his six-run blowup against the Marlins at the beginning of the month; he's allowed just three earned runs and compiled a 19:4 K:BB in 12.1 innings of work. The 11 strikeouts is a career-high for the 24-year-old, and he's now struck out 167 batters in 155 innings this season to go along with his 3.60 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He's already compiled a career-high in innings, but assuming he stays on schedule, his next start is lined up for Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Sep 7 2017Nola allowed three runs -- just two earned -- on seven hits and two walks while striking out eight batters through 5.1 innings during Thursday's loss to Washington. He didn't factor in the decision. After turning in a sterling 10-game stretch with a 1.71 ERA and 10.3 K/9, Nola had allowed 19 runs through 23.1 innings over his past four starts for a 7.33 ERA. It's probably wise not to overreact to his recent inconsistency because the 23-year-old righty's 148 innings are well above any number he's thrown in any other season as a professional. In fact, rebounding with this strong showing against a contender should be the focus -- especially for keeper/dynasty owners. Nola projects to make his next start against the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.
Sep 2 2017Nola (10-10) gave up six runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out seven over five innings in a losing effort against the Marlins on Saturday. The evening started poorly for Nola, as he gave up homers to Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna in the first, and the extra-base hits just kept coming. His curveball wasn't sharp and the Marlins sat on his fastball. Nola was excellent in June and July, but the long season may be catching up to the 24-year-old (19 earned runs in his last four starts). Assuming he stays on schedule, Nola will face the Nationals on the road his next time out.
Aug 28 2017Nola (10-9) tossed seven one-run innings to earn the win Monday against the Braves, allowing five hits with no walks and six strikeouts.Nola was terrific in this one, throwing 70 percent of his pitches for strikes while inducing 10 groundball outs. He allowed a run on two hits in the sixth inning, but he allowed just three baserunners during the rest of his time on the mound. This quality start came at the right time for Nola, who had allowed 12 runs across 11.1 innings in a pair of losses in his previous two starts. He owns a tidy 3.46 ERA to go along with a 1.18 WHIP going into Saturday's start against the Marlins.
Aug 26 2017Nola will start Monday's game against the Braves, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reports.Nola had been scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Cubs, but the Phillies are going to recall Nick Pivetta from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take the hill for said game. As a result, Nola will carry his 3.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP into a more favorable matchup against the Braves on Monday.
Aug 22 2017Nola (9-9) allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks across 6.1 innings while taking the loss Tuesday against the Marlins. He struck out seven.Nola allowed three runs through the first six innings of a tie game, but he unraveled in the seventh and was removed after a three-run home run from Ichiro and a solo shot by Giancarlo Stanton. He pounded the strike zone at a 69 percent clip and induced nine groundball outs, but he simply faded as his pitch count elevated. Nola allowed two earned runs or fewer in 10 straight starts into early August, but he has been tagged for 12 earned runs over 11.1 innings in his last two starts. He will look to get back on track Saturday against the Cubs.
Aug 17 2017Nola (9-8) took the loss Thursday in San Francisco, surrendering five earned runs with just three strikeouts over 5.0 innings.Nola's ten-start streak of holding opponents to two-or-fewer runs came to an end Thursday as he was surprisingly touched up by a floundering Giants offense in a pitcher's park. He was relatively effective through his first four innings, but things began to fall apart for Nola in the fifth inning with the Giants scratching three runs across against him to force him from the game. Considering how effective Nola has been since late June, Thursday's hiccup was likely little more than an aberration for the 24-year-old ace. He'll look to bounce back Tuesday against the Marlins in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
Aug 12 2017Nola will in fact start Saturday's game against the Mets, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports. There was some speculation that Nola could appear later in Saturday's game, with the Phillies potentially using a reliever to start in case the game got rained out. However, Montemurro reports that Nola is going through his typical pregame routine in the outfield, so look for him to make a traditional start.
Aug 12 2017Nola (9-7) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight across seven innings to earn the win Saturday against the Mets.Nola's only mistake was allowing a solo homer in the fourth inning, but the offense provided him a pair of runs in the fifth frame, leading to his ninth victory of the campaign. He hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his last 10 starts, and during that time he's lowered his ERA from 4.76 to 3.02; the 24-year-old seems to be emerging into an ace before our eyes. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Giants.
Aug 12 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said Nola may not start Saturday's game but is still expected to pitch, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports. With rain on the forecast, the Phillies are contemplating using a reliever to begin the game to avoid Nola's start being cut short. It makes sense, as Nola has been in fine form lately -- compiling a 1.79 ERA and 70 strikeouts over his last nine starts -- so the Phillies want to get as many innings out of him as possible. If he doesn't end up starting, it sounds like he's still expected to pitch the bulk of the contest.
Aug 6 2017Nola limited the Rockies to two runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over seven strong innings in Sunday's no-decision at Coors Field.Nola twirled his ninth consecutive quality start, continually confounding a tough lineup in the league's least pitcher-friendly venue. Nobody has managed to score more than two runs off him in that stretch, yet a lack of support from Philadelphia's 28th-ranked offense has limited the 24-year-old righty to a 2-2 record in his past six starts. Nola was actually on the hook for the loss in this one until a ninth-inning rally off closer Greg Holland handed his team a 3-2 win. His next start is scheduled for Saturday against the Mets.
Aug 2 2017Nola (8-7) absorbed a loss in Anaheim on Tuesday despite allowing just two runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out three. In the pitching battle of Nola vs. Nolasco (Ricky, that is), the extra letters came out on top. It's hard to blame the third-year righty, however, as he continued a spectacular run in which he's given up two or fewer runs in eight consecutive starts, accumulating a 1.66 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 63:15 K:BB over 54.1 innings in that span. His velocity is up this year and his luck has normalized, and the result has been rock-solid fantasy productivity. However, it might not be a bad idea for owners to keep him benched for Sunday's start against the Rockies at Coors Field.
Jul 27 2017Nola (8-6) struck out a career-high 10 while allowing just four hits and a walk over six scoreless frames in a 9-0 win over Houston on Wednesday. He picked an awfully tough opponent for his first-ever double-digit-whiff game and just his second scoreless outing of 2017. Of course, that makes it all the more impressive, as Nola has rapidly developed into one of the league's better starters this year. He's not quite elite, but it's hard to imagine a fantasy format where his 3.17 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 9.7 K/9 wouldn't come in rather handy.
Jul 21 2017Nola (7-6) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out nine over seven innings to earn the win Friday against the Brewers.Other than allowing a solo homer in the second inning, Nola dominated the Brewers while getting plenty of run support to earn him his seventh win of the year. He's held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in six straight starts to lower his ERA from 4.76 to 3.38 and he's emerging as a top-end fantasy starter. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Astros.
Jul 21 2017Phillies pitching coach Bob McClure credits Nola's fastball velocity increase this season to improved pitching mechanics, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Nola tweaked his mechanics in the offseason to use his legs more which helped take some stress off his arm and allows him to add a little more velocity. Last year, he averaged 90.7 mph with his fastball, but has bumped that up to 92 mph this season. Opponents have hit just .226 with a .384 slugging percentage against the fastball this year after teeing off on the pitch last season when Nola dealt with elbow problems. The 2014 first-round pick is 4-3 with a 2.65 ERA and a 59:16 K:BB in 54.1 innings since the beginning of June. He faces the Brewers at home on Friday.
Jul 15 2017Nola allowed just two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven batters through six innings during Saturday's loss to Milwaukee. He didn't factor into the decision. With another strong outing, Nola's down to a 3.54 ERA and 1.20 WHIP for the season while sporting a high-end 9.2 K/9. After a bit of a rough start to the campaign, the 24-year-old righty has now allowed two runs or fewer in six of his past eight outings with at least six strikeouts in each start. Very few hurlers have shown that consistency this year, and considering his pedigree, his climbing fantasy stock is warranted. Nola projects to face the Brewers at Citizens Bank Park in his next start.
Jul 8 2017Nola (6-6) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine across eight innings to take the loss Saturday against the Padres.Nola had a shutout going until giving up a pair of runs in the seventh inning while the offense was only able to provide in a single run of support, leading to his sixth loss of the season. He's allowed just five runs over his last four starts to lower his ERA from 4.76 to 3.59, and he's become a solid fantasy option. He'll make his next start at a time yet to be determined after the All-Star break.
Jul 3 2017Nola (6-5) pitched seven scoreless inning with eight strikeouts during Monday's win over Pittsburgh. He allowed just four hits and a walk.Nola entered with just three runs allowed and 17 strikeouts through 14.1 innings over his prior two starts, so this was another dominant outing from the youngster. His pitch arsenal matches his pedigree, and the sky is the limit moving forward. It's unlikely he continues to cruise through lineups like he has in his past three starts, but there's also plenty of room for negative regression before it's even worth considering fading him at this stage of the game. Additionally, sometimes everything just clicks, and there is no looking back. Nola lines up to face San Diego at Citizens Bank Park in his next start.
Jun 27 2017Nola (5-5) gave up two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out nine over seven innings in Tuesday's win over the Mariners. He set a new season high in strikeouts, which helped mitigate the damage from the four free passes. Nola finishes the month of June with a 35:11 in 33:1 innings, and he's completed at least six innings in four of his last five starts. The 24-year-old seems to have turned the page on the back issue that put him on the DL earlier in the season.
Jun 22 2017Nola (4-5) allowed just a single run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight batters through 7.1 innings during Thursday's win over St. Louis. This was arguably Nola's best start of the season, and he was particularly sharp throwing 74 of 107 pitches for strikes and going deep into the game. It was also especially encouraging because the young righty posted a 4.89 ERA through his previous six starts dating back to when he returned from the disabled list May 21. Nola should probably still be started with a degree of caution until he shows more consistency on the hill, though. He projects to face the Mariners at Safeco Park in his next start.
Jun 16 2017Nola (3-5) allowed five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out six batters through six innings during Friday's loss to Arizona. It took Nola 106 pitches -- just 66 strikes -- to get through six frames Friday, as control struggles continue to cap the young righty's upside. He's been hit or miss this season, and considering his pedigree, Nola's virtual results aren't matching the perceived value his name carries. After all, his 4.76 ERA and 1.35 WHIP are far from go-to fantasy marks. He projects to face the Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park in his next start.
Jun 12 2017Nola picked up his fourth loss of the season after allowing three runs on four hits over five innings Sunday against the Cardinals. He struck out six and walked two.Nola stayed out of trouble until the fifth inning when he gave up a three-run homer to Dexter Fowler with two outs in the frame. He struggled with his control in the outing, ending up in a lot of three-ball counts while throwing 53 strikes and 40 balls over his five innings. He faces the Diamondbacks at home in his next start.
Jun 7 2017Nola allowed one run on five hits over eight innings against the Braves on Tuesday to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out six and walked one.Nola needed just 97 pitches to go eight innings. This was a nice bounce-back game after he allowed nine runs over his previous two starts. Nola's strikeout rate of 7.9 is down from 9.8 last season, but it is in line with his 2015 rookie-season when he finished the year with a 3.59 ERA. He'll try to keep things rolling when he faces the Cardinals in St. Louis in his next start.
May 31 2017Nola (2-3) gave up four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four over three innings in Wednesday's 10-2 loss to the Marlins. He labored through 73 pitches (47 strikes) before being lifted from his shortest outing so far this season. After looking good in his first start off the DL, Nola's now been tagged for nine runs in nine innings over his last two trips to the mound, sending his ERA soaring to 5.06. He'll try to get back on track Tuesday in Atlanta.
May 26 2017Nola (2-2) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five across six innings to take the loss Friday against the Reds.Nola gave up a pair of runs in the first inning on a night the Phillies bats were quiet, and he was unable to keep them in the contest. He's failed to post a quality start in two of his last three outings, and his ERA has risen from 3.27 to 4.34, but the fact he's struck out 35 hitters over his last 38 innings make him a useful fantasy option in most leagues. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Marlins.
May 22 2017Nola allowed one run on four hits over seven innings in a 1-0 loss to the Pirates on Sunday. He struck out five and walked two.Nola, who was making his first start since coming off the disabled list with a lower back strain, topped out at 95.5 mph with his fastball and averaged 92.3 mph, according to Corey Seidman of CSN Philadelphia. He needed just 89 pitches to get through seven innings. The 23-year-old righty is scheduled to face the Reds in his next start.
May 21 2017Nola (back) has been activated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the Pirates, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Nola has been out for nearly a month with a lower-back strain, but he shouldn't face any pinch-count limitations in his return from the DL on Sunday after he cruised through two rehab starts at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, covering 10.1 innings and turning in a 0.87 ERA and 0.68 WHIP. The right-hander will benefit from a favorable matchup right off the bat against a Pirates squad that has compiled a .269 team wOBA over the last two weeks, ranking last in the majors during that span.
May 16 2017Nola (back) is expected to come off the disabled list to start Sunday's game against the Pirates, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Nola tossed 6.1 shutout innings (83 pitches) without a hitch during his last rehab start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday, clearing the way for him to return to the big-league rotation. His first start back is expected to be May 21 against the Pirates. Nola held a 4.50 ERA and struck out 15 batters across 16 innings (three starts) this season before landing on the disabled list.
May 15 2017Nola threw 6.1 shutout innings in his final rehab start Monday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reports.Nola fired 83 pitches in the start and struck out seven against just one walk. Unless the Phillies make a surprise decision to send him out for another rehab appearance, Nola appears to be in line to start May 20 against Pittsburgh. He has been out since April 20 with the back injury but had a solid 15 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched before he went down.
May 12 2017Nola (back) will make his next rehab appearance with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice.com reports. There is a lot of speculation that this will also be Nola's final rehab appearance, although a confirmation of this likely won't come until after Monday's start. If all goes as planned, the right-hander would seemingly be in line to start May 20 on the road against the Pirates.
May 11 2017Nola (back) threw four innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.Nola threw 37 of his 52 pitches for strikes and topped out at 93 mph during the outing. Manager Pete Mackanin said Nola will likely need two rehab starts which puts him on pace to rejoin the Phillies during or right after their May 19-21 series with the Pirates.
May 10 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said Nola (back) will likely need two rehab starts before he rejoins the Phillies, Mike Murphy of CSN Philadelphia reports.Nola is scheduled to throw 60 pitches in his rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Mackanin would like to see Nola get up to 80 pitches in his second rehab appearance before he rejoins the rotation. The young righty has been on the disabled list since April 24 with a lower-back strain.
May 9 2017Nola (back) will make a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Meghan Montemurro of The News Journal reports. The right-hander was expected to begin a rehab assignment this week, but the exact timing of everything did not become evident until now. There's speculation that this could be Nola's lone rehab start prior to rejoining the Phillies' rotation, but more news on that front should become evident once he clears this final hurdle on the road to a full recovery.
May 8 2017Nola (back) will start a rehab assignment this week, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Nola threw a bullpen session before Sunday's game and did not have any problems with his sore back. Manager Pete Mackanin did not provide a specific date for Nola's rehab start. Nola will likely need just one minor-league appearance before he rejoins the Phillies' rotation.
May 5 2017The MRI results on Nola's lower back did not reveal any damage, meaning that he will now throw a bullpen session this weekend, Ryan Lawrence of PhillyVoice reports. This has to be encouraging news for Phillies, as Nola likely will now be able to return much earlier than the team may have originally feared. If his bullpen session goes well, he could be in line to be back on the mound by mid-May.
May 3 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said Tuesday that Nola may miss another start because of his lower-back strain, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Nola showed improvement after his bullpen session Monday, but the Phillies want to be cautious with their young starter. Mackanin said he would talk with GM Matt Klentak on Wednesday to make a decision regarding Nola's status for his scheduled start Friday. Nick Pivetta would get another start if Nola can't go this week.
May 3 2017Nola returned to Philadelphia to get an MRI on his back, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports.Despite showing notable improvements over the past few days, Nola is apparently still feeling something in his back and is headed for a precautionary MRI. He still remains without a timetable for return, though it seems likely he'll miss at least one more start. More should be known about his status once the MRI results are released, but in the meantime, Nick Pivetta should continue to start as long as Nola can't go.
May 1 2017Nola (back) tossed a bullpen session Monday without issue, CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury reports. The good news here is that this session went a lot better than Nola's previous bullpen. The 23-year-old threw a series of three, 15-pitch intervals to simulate rest between innings. Nola's timetable should become clearer Tuesday after he gauges how he feels the day after throwing.
Apr 30 2017Nola (back) will attempt another bullpen session Monday, CSN Philly reports. He won't come off the DL as originally hoped Monday, but If all goes well with the session in Chicago, the 23-year-old righty could have a shot at returning for his regular turn in the rotation Friday against the Nats. Nola's back strain surfaced after his last start on April 20, so if he's able to return this week, he'll only have missed two scheduled starts due to the ailment.
Apr 30 2017Nola felt some soreness in his back after throwing a bullpen session Friday, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Manager Pete Mackanin said Nola will be reevaluated this week to determine when he will throw his next bullpen session. Nick Pivetta will likely stay in the Phillies' rotation until Nola is ready to come off the disabled list.
Apr 27 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said Nola's back is feeling much better, Ben Harris of MLB.com reports.Nola is eligible to be activated from the disabled list Monday, but his spot in the rotation is not due up until next Friday. It is possible the Phillies will have him start earlier than Friday and push back the rest of their rotation. Mackanin said no decisions have been made until they are certain Nola is healthy enough to come off the disabled list next week.
Apr 25 2017GM Matt Klentak said Nola (back) will likely miss only one or two starts, Corey Seidman of CSN Philadelphia reports.Nola experienced lower back soreness during his start Thursday against the Mets. He received treatment, but felt tightness in side session Sunday. He is eligible to return from the disabled list May 1. Nick Pivetta is expected to take Nola's spot in the rotation while he is sidelined.
Apr 24 2017Nola was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The move comes after Nola struggled (but still picked up the win) against the Mets in his last start, seeing his fastball velocity dip to 90 mph from his normal 92 mph clip. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined, but the move is retroactive to April 21, making Nola eligible for activation on May 1 against the Cubs should he be ready. The Phillies haven't hinted at a possible fill in for Nola while he is sidelined, but it appears Nick Pivetta could start in his place.
Apr 21 2017Nola picked up his second win of the season Thursday in a 6-4 win over the Mets. He allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings with two strikeouts and four walks.Nola was lucky to get a win because he did not pitch well Thursday. He needed 96 pitches to get through five innings and struggled to put hitters away. Part of the blame for Nola's struggles may be due to not having his best stuff Thursday. His fastball velocity was sitting around 90 mph as opposed to 92 mph in his prior two starts. The drop in velocity is a bit of a concern and bears watching moving forward. Nola will face the Marlins at home in his next start.
Apr 15 2017Nola allowed one run on six hits over five innings in a 3-2 loss to the Nationals on Friday. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.Nola needed 90 pitches to get through five innings, so it wasn't his most efficient outing. He has a 13:2 K:BB through his first 11 innings and has shown increased velocity on his fastball. He could be in for a nice bounce-back season after struggling with elbow issues last year.
Apr 9 2017Nola allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings Saturday against the Nationals to pick up his first win of the season. He struck out seven and walked two. This was Nola's first regular season start since last July when he went on the disabled list due to an elbow injury. He was hitting 94 mph with his fastball and had good movement on his two-seamer. The young righty will face the Nationals again in his next start.
Mar 29 2017Nola was hit hard in his final spring start, allowing five runs on seven hits over 1.2 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four and walked one.Nola told Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice after the game that he felt great, but left some balls over the plate which were hammered by Toronto hitters. Nola's overall numbers this spring look bad, but his velocity has been in line with his career norms so there are not any visible signs that his elbow is giving him issues again. He will pitch in a minor league game Sunday before he makes his first start of the season on April 8 against Washington.
Mar 18 2017Manager Pete Mackanin was happy with Nola's outing Friday despite it being a subpar performance for the young right-hander, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. "He threw a lot of good changeups," Mackanin said. "And the velocity was important to me. The command will come next. Once he gets to the point where he's commanding his pitches, he's going to be back to where he's supposed to be."Nola struck out four in 4.2 innings, but also walked four and allowed four runs on four hits. He was hitting 94 mph on the radar gun, which is a good sign after elbow issues torpedoed his 2016 season. The 2014 first-round pick should be climbing up draft boards as confidence in the health of his arm continues to grow.
Mar 2 2017Nola logged two innings in Thursday's spring game, allowing just one hit and striking out one.The right-hander pitched his first game since last summer with authority, recording four groundball outs and touching 94 mph on his fastball, per Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly. With his 2016 elbow issues close to completely behind him, Nola comes in to 2017 as a prime rebound candidate in fantasy leagues. Buy.
Feb 28 2017Nola is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Thursday against the Blue Jays, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports.Nola has endured no complications with his right elbow during camp after finishing last season on the DL with a UCL sprain and flexor pronator tendon strain. He treated the elbow with platelet-rich plasma injections in August and entered camp at full strength, but the Phillies have intentionally eased their projected ace back into the swing of things during the spring. Nola's injury woes last season dragged down his final numbers, but now that he's conceivably healthy, he represents a high-upside target in drafts after compiling a 2.65 ERA to go along with sterling ratios over his first 12 starts of 2016.
Feb 22 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said he is pleased with how Nola has been throwing thus far in camp, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports.Nola was diagnosed with a sprained UCL last July which ended his season early. He was given a platelet-rich plasma injection and rehabbed his injury during the offseason. Nola has said he is fully healthy, but he hasn't truly tested his arm yet. That will happen when he starts pitching in games this spring. His first appearance in game action should come within the next week. He's a risky investment this year given his elbow issue, but he could return significant value if he finds his form from early last season.
Jan 17 2017Nola (elbow) said Tuesday that he will enter spring training without restrictions, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports. The right-hander said something similar in early November, suggesting he was 100 percent healthy even then, but this is still notable as Nola has been throwing for some time and has avoided setbacks. He said Tuesday that he's feeling "great," now nearly five months removed from suffering a low-grade UCL sprain and a low-grade flexor pronator tendon strain. Nola, who's just 23, figures to see his ADP steadily creep up if he can prove his health in camp.
Nov 3 2016The Phillies activated Nola (elbow) from the 60-day disabled list Thursday, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports. It was reported Wednesday that Nola is back at 100 percent, so Thursday's move was primarily procedural, as players cannot stay on the 60-day disabled list during the offseason. Nola should begin his offseason throwing program in the near future and will be ready for Opening Day barring any setbacks. He finished 2016 with just a 4.78 ERA over 20 starts, but he also struck out 121 batters in 111 innings and has front-end starter potential, so he will be a name to remember when drafts roll around in the spring.
Nov 2 2016Nola (elbow) feels 100 percent healthy and is ready for spring training, according to his agent, Joe Longo, the Philadelphia Inquirer's Matt Gelb reports. It sounds like an October throwing program went well, and Nola will now start his normally planned offseason program. He missed the final two months of the season with sprains and strains of ligaments and tendons in his elbow, and the prescribed treatment was rest. Nola notched a 3.12 ERA in his first 25 MLB starts, but a 9.82 ERA in his last eight before being shut down. If he is indeed fully healthy and can return to form, Nola could be a bargain, as there will likely be a health-related discount on draft day.
Oct 25 2016Nola (elbow) will finish his rehab work in the next few weeks and head home for the offseason to prepare for spring training, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Nola suffered a low-grade sprain of his right UCL and a low-grade strain of his flexor pronator tendon in August. He had a PRP injection that same month and started throwing in late September. The Phillies expect him to be ready for spring training.
Oct 25 2016Joe Jordan, the Phillies' director of player development, said Nola (elbow) will finish his rehab work in the next few weeks and head home for the offseason to prepare for spring training, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Nola suffered a low-grade sprain of his right UCL and a low-grade strain of his flexor pronator tendon in August. He had a PRP injection that same month and started throwing in late September. The Phillies expect him to be ready for spring training.
Sep 29 2016Nola (elbow) started a throwing program this week in Clearwater, Fla., Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.GM Matt Klentak said Nola has felt good so far. He will begin throwing on flat ground, increase his throwing distance and then move to the mound to face hitters. Klentak indicated the Phillies will be conservative with the pace when ramping things up. The team remains hopeful Nola will be ready for Spring Training.
Sep 10 2016Nola (elbow) will meet with team medical officials on Monday for an evaluation, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Nola, who was diagnosed with a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament and a strain of the flexor tendon, is hoping to get an idea of when he will be able to begin a throwing program. Monday will be one month since he received a platelet-rich-plasma injection which required that he not throw fro four to six weeks. Nola said his elbow if feeling better and that his range of motion is back. The Phillies hope Nola will be able to face hitters in Florida in the month of October to get a better idea of how his elbow has responded to treatment. He is expected to be ready for spring training, barring any setbacks.
Aug 17 2016Nola (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, effectively ending his season.Nola was diagnosed with a sprained UCL, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the move to the 60-day disabled list puts an end to his 2016 campaign. The Phillies don't expect him to need surgery and expect that he'll be ready for spring training in 2017. Going forward, Nola will rest four weeks before attempting to throw. Nola ends his 2016 season with a 6-9 record, 4.78 ERA, and 1.31 WHIP.
Aug 3 2016Manager Pete Mackanin acknowledged Wednesday that Nola (elbow) could miss the rest of the season, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The Phillies scratched Nola from his scheduled start Wednesday and subsequently placed the 23-year-old on the DL with a right elbow strain. While Nola hopes his season isn't finished, Mackanin offered a sobering but perhaps more realistic take on the matter, suggesting Nola may just remain shut down for the remainder of the year with mid-September looking like a best-case scenario for his return. The right-hander had struggled mightily since the start of June but the team was adamant that there was nothing wrong with him, physically. Regardless, Phil Klein is starting in place of Nola on Wednesday, although prospect Jake Thompson will be an option to join the rotation the next time through.
Aug 3 2016Nola was placed on the 15-day DL on Wednesday with a right elbow strain. While the Phillies have maintained throughout Nola's struggles that he was healthy, this helps explain why the velocity on his sinker was down to 88.3 mph in his last start -- down from 91 mph at the start of the season. He got off to an excellent start to the season (3.55 ERA in April, 2.31 ERA in May), but he has been brutal ever since. The nature of the injury certainly suggests that Nola could be sidelined for quite some time, so in mixed leagues without DL spots, owners can probably cut bait at this point. Phil Klein was called up from Triple-A as a corresponding move and will slot into the Phillies' rotation on Wednesday against the Giants.
Jul 30 2016Nola averaged just 88.3 mph with his sinker during his start Thursday, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The sinker is Nola's primary pitch and is critical to his success. He began the year throwing the pitch at 91 mph and has seen his velocity decline each month, reaching its lowest point in his last start. There has been no talk of an injury, but there has been some indication that Nola was dealing with a "dead arm" earlier this month. He has also been tinkering with his mechanics, which could also be impacting his velocity.
Jul 28 2016Nola (6-9) pitched five innings, allowing three runs, eight hits and three walks while striking out five Braves in Thursday's win. It's hard not to be grateful for his first win since June 5, but Nola left a lot on the table in this one. He allowed just two hits through four scoreless frames before running into trouble in the fifth, and not making it back out in the sixth for a chance at a quality start. Nola has failed to deliver on high expectations this season, and his 4.78 ERA is a fairly accurate depiction of what can be expected from him on a start-to-start basis. The righty draws the Giants at home Wednesday for his next start.
Jul 23 2016Nola (5-9) gave up six earned runs on six hits and two walks over four-plus innings in Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Pirates. He labored through 80 pitches, throwing only 46 for strikes. The Pirates got to Nola early, with Starling Marte tallying an RBI single in the first and Jody Mercer driving in Josh Harrison with an RBI groundout in the second. Gregory Polanco knocked in two with a single in the fifth that chased Nola, and then David Freese's subsequent two-RBI hit went on the Phillies starter's ledger as well. The 23-year-old has now sandwiched two poor outings around the six scoreless innings he fired against the Marlins on Monday, and has dropped five straight decisions. He'll try turning things around against the Braves next Thursday.
Jul 19 2016Nola checked out fine after taking a liner to the shoulder Monday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports.Nola initially stayed in the game, finishing out the sixth inning before being removed for precautionary reasons. He admitted Tuesday that the area is sore, but he's not expected to miss any time as his next start approaches.

Jul 18 2016Nola was fantastic in a no-decision on Monday, shutting out the Marlins through six innings, holding them to two hits and one walk while striking out five.Nola was removed after just 68 pitches, the fewest he's thrown in a start this season. The start was a nice turnaround for Nola, who allowed 27 runs over his five starts preceding the All-Star Break. He'll carry a 4.41 ERA into his start Saturday against the Pirates.
Jul 9 2016Nola will rejoin the Phillies' rotation July 18 against the Marlins, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Nola was the first Phillies starter to shut it down before the break and he will be one of the last to start coming out, giving him more than two weeks of rest between outings. The 23-year-old sat with a 2.65 ERA on June 5 but endured a horrible stretch of starts which inflated his ERA by more than two full runs. He still has a 3.20 FIP, however, and hopefully the down time will help Nola regain proper feel for his curveball.
Jul 3 2016Nola's final start before the All-Star break will be skipped, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports.Nola will not be passed up due to performance reasons, as the team is simply looking to give the 23-year-old a longer All-Star break in an effort to save his arm for later in the year. He's already thrown 96 innings this season, which is starting to creep up on his career-high 110.1 innings from 2015. The right-hander may have only five wins this season, but his 4.69 ERA is supported by a 2.96 xFIP, and a 60.5 percent strand rate suggests he's been the victim of some tough luck. Nola will likely throw a simulated game over the break, and enter the second half with high expectations.
Jul 3 2016The Phillies may skip Nola's final start before the All-Star break, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Nola has allowed at least five runs in each of his last four starts, so the Phillies are considering giving him an extended rest. Manager Pete Mackanin said he was encouraged by Nola's outing Saturday, especially the last three innings of his start where "he looked like his old self." Nola says he wants to make his next start Thursday in Colorado. A decision could come as soon as Sunday.
Jul 2 2016Nola (5-8) allowed five runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked one over five innings during a loss to the Royals on Saturday. He was able to work out of trouble in the first, but with two outs in the second, Kansas City scored four runs. The Royals scored all five of their runs versus Nola in the second. Nola retired the last 10 batters he faced, but he's still allowed at least five runs in each of his last four outings. He will try to get back on track in his next start against the Rockies on Thursday.
Jun 26 2016Nola allowed five runs on 10 hits in just 3.1 innings in Sunday's start versus the Giants. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.Nola taxed himself in the third inning when he allowed four runs on five hits, and he left the game after recording just one out in the fourth inning. He has allowed 22 runs in just 13 innings over his last four starts and has seen his ERA balloon nearly two full runs to 4.45. He will look to get back on track Saturday versus the Royals.
Jun 23 2016Pitching coach Bob McClure will work with Nola in his bullpen session this week to pinpoint and fix a minor mechanical flaw in his delivery, CSN Philadelphia's Jim Salisbury reports.Nola has struggled in his last three starts, giving up 17 earned runs on 22 hits with seven walks over 9.2 innings. McClure said Nola has been overthrowing and might be getting under the baseball instead of staying on top during his release. Nola will make his next start Sunday at San Francisco.
Jun 16 2016Nola (5-6) was beaten up for eight runs (six earned) in just three-plus innings by the visiting Blue Jays on Thursday. He allowed eight hits -- two of them homers -- and three walks while striking out five.He gave up four runs in the first three innings, but it was a fourth-inning rally that really undid Nola. He's now given up 10 runs over only 6.2 innings spanning his last two starts, a stretch that's inflated his ERA by nearly a full point from its previously lofty status. Still, this can be written off to a pair of tough matchups in a row against the Nats and Jays; an easier draw is on tap for Nola against the Twins on Tuesday.
Jun 11 2016Nola (5-5) gave up seven hits, four earned runs and a walk over 3.2 innings in Saturday's 8-0 loss to the Nationals. The young right-hander had come in to Saturday riding a streak of nine straight quality starts, but the prospect of extending that came to a quick crash versus the Nationals. Nola surrendered four runs on three hits and a fielder's choice in the second, and was at 82 pitches by the fourth inning. The outing was the 23-year-old's shortest by far this season, and the earned run total was his highest since giving up seven to this same Nationals squad back on April 16. He'll try to get back on track next Thursday in a home date versus the Blue Jays.
Jun 6 2016Nola tossed six scoreless innings Sunday against the Brewers to pick up his fifth win of the season. He also struck out six and walked one.The right-hander pounded the strike zone with 60 strikes on 92 pitches. He struck out the side in the first and didn't allow a hit until the third. The four earned runs does raise his ERA, but it still sits at a healthy 3.14. He also has a 0.94 WHIP, .204 batting average against and 70 strikeouts in 66.0 innings. Nola will make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Nationals.
May 20 2016Nola allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits, walking two and striking out six over seven innings of a 7-1 loss to Atlanta on Friday night.Nola (3-3) technically turned in a quality start, but his line was tarnished by a three-run home run after a Mikael Franco error left the door open in the seventh inning. He owns one of the best curve balls in baseball, but he needs to command his fastball more consistently to set up his breaking pitches. His future is bright atop the Phillies' rotation, but he is learning on the job and there will likely be occasional rough stretches.
May 14 2016Nola (3-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out nine and walking only one in a victory against the Reds on Saturday. The only run he yielded was a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Nola was sharp, throwing 71 of his 100 pitches for strikes, inducing 15 swing-and-misses. It's the second time this season he's recorded nine strikeouts. Nola will look to keep it going in his next start Friday against the Braves.
May 4 2016Nola (2-2) held the Cardinals to just two hits and a walk over seven shutout innings in Tuesday's victory. He struck out seven.Nola now has a streak of 20 scoreless innings dating back to April 22 against Milwaukee, a span in which he has allowed just six hits and three walks against 19 strikeouts. The Cardinals only swung and missed seven times at 111 pitches from Nola, but they didn't do much with their contact, generating 10 ground ball outs. Nola's ERA is down to 2.93 as the former top-100 prospect is more than justifying the hype.
Jul 7 2015Nola is not a candidate to start Saturday but could join the big league club sometime after the All-Star break, Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.Nola may be the most big-league ready pitching prospect in the National League. However, he is also a part of the worst team in the league where winning this season is probably not the No. 1 goal, and thus there are conflicting interests at work. Nola is worth a stash in deeper formats, but it is very difficult to predict when he will make his big league debut this season.
Jul 7 2015GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Nola is close to being ready for the majors, the Phillies' official site reports. "I don't think he's that far away, but when he's ready he'll be here," Amaro said. "Just because our rotation is very poor right now, it doesn't mean we're going to bring him to the big leagues for that reason. We're going to bring him when it's time for him developmentally."Nola is 3-0 with a 2.28 ERA and a 24:5 K:BB ratio in 23.2 innings since he was promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies created a roster spot on Monday when Sean O'Sullivan was outrighted, but Nola will not be coming up to take his spot. He could be with the Phillies before the end of the month or in early August if he keeps pitching well at Triple-A.
Jun 14 2015Nola has been promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Nola has been spectacular for Double-A Reading this season, posting a 1.88 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 59:9 K:BB ratio over 76.2 innings. Although the Phillies have no reason to rush his call-up in another rebuilding year, Nola may eventually force their hand if the right-hander can replicate those numbers at the next level. At the very least, he should be on the radar in just about all dynasty formats.
May 21 2015GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Nola will remain at Double-A for now, CSN Philadelphia reports. It is the same message Amaro delivered earlier this month. Nola, who threw seven shutout innings Wednesday, is now 6-2 with a 1.54 ERA and a 39:6 K:BB in 52.2 innings. Amaro said Nola has more to work on before a promotion, but would not elaborate further.
Jun 5 2014The Phillies have selected Nola with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 first-year player draft. While Nola's ceiling may not be as high as the other elite starting pitchers in the 2014 draft class, he presents the highest floor of the bunch and is likely to be the first starter from the class to reach the big leagues. Nola commands all three of his pitches very well, mixing a 91-93 mph fastball with sink, a changeup that occasionally flashes as a plus offering, and a slider. During the regular season during his junior campaign at LSU, Nola racked up a 127:26 K:BB in 109 innings, continuing to show a consistent ability to induce weak contact and avoid the damage with free passes and home runs.
