Jun 21 2025Ross gave up three runs on four hits and no walks in 2.2 innings of relief during Saturday's 11-4 defeat to the Mets. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rooke right-hander Mick Abel was able to give the Phillies only three innings, so Ross was brought on to provide some length. Saturday was Ross' second-longest outing of the season, but he's limped to an 8.00 ERA and 6:6 K:BB across nine innings in the month of June. The 32-year-old right-hander has made just one start this year and has no holds or saves, so his pathway to fantasy relevance remains cloudy as a multi-inning middle reliever.
Jun 5 2025Ross will start Friday's game against the Pirates, Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen this season but has gotten more than three outs in nine of his 21 appearances. He is expected to pitch around two innings and will lead off a bullpen game for the Phillies. Taijuan Walker would have been a candidate to also chip in multiple innings, but he pitched one frame in Thursday's loss to Toronto so he may no longerbe available.
May 22 2025Ross threw two scoreless relief innings in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Rockies. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross continues to operate as a multi-inning reliever for the Phillies, and he's pitched well in recent weeks. After logging a 9.39 ERA over his first 7.2 innings of the year, the veteran right-hander holds a 1.72 ERA and 13:2 K:BB across his last 15.2 frames. Ross still remains without a clear pathway to fantasy appeal, as he remains out of Philadelphia's rotation and high-leverage picture despite the absences of Aaron Nola (ankle) and Jose Alvarado (suspension).
Apr 10 2025Ross (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits in the 11th inning Thursday against Atlanta, failing to record an out. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross was brought on to protect a one-run lead, but Austin Riley promptly doubled in the tying run, which was unearned. However, Marcell Ozuna lifted a two-run homer to walk it off for Atlanta in the ensuing at-bat. Ross is a candidate for high-leverage work in the Philadelphia bullpen due to Jordan Romano's struggles, but he's blown both of his save opportunities in 2025 and will need to improve on his 6.35 ERA over 5.2 innings to avoid moving back into a long-relief role.
Apr 7 2025Ross might see more high-leverage work while Jordan Romano sorts through his struggles, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross has permitted one run with a 3:1 K:BB over four innings this season. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that he views Ross as someone who can give the team "a little bit of bulk," but also is "kind of a leverage guy, too," based on how his stuff has looked. Ross is still behind Jose Alvarado, Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm in the bullpen pecking order, but he is inching up the hierarchy.
Feb 18 2025Ross is building up a starter during spring training, but he's expected to open the season in the bullpen if all five members of the Philadelphia rotation are healthy heading into Opening Day, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander seems to be the next man up for a starting spot if any of Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, Jesus Luzardo or Cristopher Sanchez aren't available to make their first turn through the rotation to begin the season. Ideally though, manager Rob Thomson said Monday that Ross will serve primarily as a multi-inning or one-inning leverage option out of the bullpen. While with Milwaukee during the 2024 regular season, Ross struggled over his 10 starts (4.98 ERA, .321 wOBA, 39:18 K:BB in 47 innings), but he was effective across 15 relief appearances (1.67 ERA, .258 wOBA, 27:11 K:BB in 27 innings).
Dec 23 2024The Phillies signed Ross to a one-year, $4 million contract Monday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross essentially slides into the swingman role vacated by free agent Spencer Turnbull. The 31-year-old Ross fared much better in relief (1.98 ERA, 24.1 percent strikeout rate) than he did as a starter (4.98 ERA, 18.7 percent strikeout rate) with the Brewers in 2024.
Jul 30 2024Ross (2-5) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings, taking the loss versus Atlanta on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross missed over two months with a back strain, and he was a little rusty in his return. He threw 61 of 87 pitches for strikes but gave up four runs in the third inning and a solo home run to Jarred Kelenic in the fourth. Ross now has a 4.98 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 39:18 K:BB through 47 innings over 10 starts this season. He is not guaranteed to stay in the rotation, as the Brewers traded for Frankie Montas and have also gotten good results from Colin Rea and Tobias Myers in Ross's absence.
Jul 28 2024The Brewers are expected to activate Ross (back) from the 60-day injured list and have him start Tuesday against Atlanta at American Family Field, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even though he was lit up for 11 earned runs on 14 hits and five walks over 8.1 innings in his final two rehab outings with Triple-A Nashville, Ross apparently checked out fine physically upon returning to Milwaukee this weekend and completing a bullpen session in front of the coaching and training staffs Saturday. Though Ross looks to be fully stretched out after tossing 80 pitches for Nashville his last time out Wednesday, the Brewers could nonetheless be conservative with his workload against Atlanta, considering he's been on the shelf since May 21 with a low back strain. Moreover, the Brewers have Bryse Wilson and Jakob Junis on hand as multi-inning options out of the bullpen, so the team doesn't have as much of a need for Ross to take on a significant pitch count in his first start with the big club in more than two months.
Jul 25 2024Ross (back) made a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Nashville and gave up three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross tossed 80 pitches (50 strikes) in Wednesday's outing and looks ready to return from the 60-day injured list from a workload standpoint, but it's unclear if the Brewers will turn to him to fill the vacant spot in their rotation. Before landing on the IL on May 21 with a low back strain, Ross turned in unremarkable ratios (4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) over his nine starts, and his recent results at Nashville haven't inspired much confidence. He began a rehab assignment earlier this month and has now made four minor-league starts in total, but he's labored in both of his past two outings, striking out six while allowing 11 earned runs on 14 hits and five walks over 8.1 innings between those starts. Milwaukee will require a fifth starter again this coming Tuesday versus Atlanta, but Ross' poor form of late could prompt the team to opt for a bullpen game rather than activating the right-hander.
Jul 14 2024Ross (back) is scheduled to make the third start of his rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Nashville, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross' upcoming start with Nashville could be his last before he returns from the 60-day injured list. He built up to 3.2 innings and 46 pitches in his latest start with Nashville on Wednesday, so Ross will likely be targeted for around 60-to-75 pitches in his upcoming outing. After designating Dallas Keuchel for assignment Sunday, Milwaukee has an opening in its rotation that would next need to be filled July 24 versus the Cubs. If Friday's rehab start goes well, Ross could be part of the Brewers' plans for the July 24 game as a starter or bulk reliever.
Jul 11 2024Ross (back) struck out three over 3.2 scoreless innings in his rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Nashville. He scattered two hits and one walk in the 46-pitch start. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross took the hill on three days' rest for his second minor-league rehab start, after he had previously covered 2.2 innings and 34 pitches in his first rehab outing with High-A Wisconsin this past Saturday. The right-hander recorded his 11 outs in efficient fashion Wednesday and should continue to build up his pitch count over the course of at least two more rehab starts. He could return from the 60-day injured list and return to the Milwaukee rotation shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2024Ross (back) will make a rehab start with High-A Wisconsin on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross has been sidelined since May 20 and has been ruled out through the All-Star break. It's unclear how many pitches he'll throw in his first rehab appearance, though it's a clear step forward and an indication he has the chance to rejoin the rotation at some point in July.
Jun 26 2024The Brewers transferred Ross (back) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for left-hander Dallas Keuchel, who will start Wednesday's game against the Rangers. Ross' timetable remains unchanged as a result of the move, as he had already been ruled out through the All-Star break. He had been set to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, so the righty seems to be trending in a positive direction.
Jun 24 2024Ross (back) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jack Stern of Brewer Fanatic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross suffered a setback with his back injury earlier this month but is ready to test things from the bump again. A return before the end of the first half for the righty was ruled out Monday by Brewers manager Pat Murphy, as Ross will need multiple throwing sessions from the mound and eventually a rehab assignment.
Jun 10 2024Ross (back) recently suffered a setback and is without a timeline to resume his throwing program, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers had previously hoped that Ross would be ready to return from the 15-day injured list around mid-June, but his setback now takes that off the table. The veteran right-hander has been shelved since late May with a lower-back strain. He went 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 35:16 K:BB in 42 innings over his nine starts prior to being placed on the IL.
Jun 3 2024Ross (back) will throw a bullpen session this weekend, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross will need to make at least one rehab start after that, but a return from the 15-day injured list by mid-June is possible if everything goes according to plan. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since late May with a lower-back strain. Ross has collected a 4.50 ERA and 35:16 K:BB over 42 innings covering nine starts this season.
May 21 2024The Brewers placed Ross on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a low-back strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross had to be removed from Monday's start versus the Marlins with the injury, although manager Pat Murphy said it's something that's bothered the pitcher for a while, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The hope is that the right-hander's absence will not be a lengthy one. Tobias Myers has taken Ross' spot on the roster and could also take his place in the rotation.
May 20 2024Ross (back) is expected to require a stint on the 15-day injured list, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross was forced from Monday's start after his back tightened up, and he was later diagnosed with a low back strain. The club will likely wait to see how he responds Tuesday morning before making an official roster move. Milwaukee is already thin when it comes to starting pitching, so the team will once again be forced to turn to their farm system for help. Aaron Ashby and Tobias Myers are candidates to fill in if it's confirmed Ross requires a trip to the IL.
May 14 2024Ross (2-4) picked up the win Tuesday against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk across five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross got a tally in the win column for the first time since April 9, putting together a spotless day outside of a two-run homer by Nick Gonzalez in the fourth. Although the 31-year-old hasn't been outstanding in 2024, he's been a reliable arm for a Brewers rotation that has been plagued by injuries. He's lasted at least five innings in six of his eight starts and has surrendered three or fewer runs six times as well. Ross is set up to make his next start during a three-game road series against the Marlins early next week.
May 8 2024Ross (1-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks across five innings against the Royals. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Each of the three hits Ross allowed went for extra bases, including back-to-back two-baggers by Maikel Garcia and Bobby Witt in the first inning -- both of whom scored via sacrifice fly. Ross has been handed a loss in four of his last five outings, owning a 5.88 ERA and a 19:8 K:BB across 26.0 innings during that stretch. He'll look to get back on track in a tentatively scheduled start Tuesday against Pittsburgh.
May 3 2024Ross did not factor into the decision Friday against the Cubs, allowing one run on six hits over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross was solid Friday, holding Chicago off the board until a Christopher Morel solo home run with two outs in the sixth inning. While Ross ultimately came away with a no-decision, he was able to stem a three-start losing streak -- he'd allowed 16 runs (13 earned) over 15 innings in that span. Overall, Ross is 1-3 with a 4.65 ERA, 1,55 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through six starts (31 innings) this season. He's currently scheduled for a road matchup with Kansas City in his next outing.
Apr 28 2024Ross (1-3) took the loss Saturday against the Yankees after he gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross continued his boom-or-bust tendencies Saturday, as he's given up six earned runs in two starts and three earned runs combined in his other three outings. The veteran right-hander likely has some security in Milwaukee's rotation with Wade Miley (elbow) out for the season and Jakob Junis (shoulder) and DL Hall (knee) also on the shelf, but Ross has a 5.40 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through five starts and is a volatile fantasy option.
Apr 22 2024Ross (1-1) took the loss Monday against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross held the Pirates offense in check Monday night with his only blemish being a leadoff homer yielded to Andrew McCutchen. With Monday's effort, the 30-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.05. Ross looks to continue sticking in the Milwaukee rotation with DL Hall (knee) and Wade Miley (elbow) recently hitting the injured list. Ross is slated to make his next start against the Yankees at home.
Apr 15 2024Ross (1-1) yielded seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross worked through three shutout frames before the Padres got on the board in the fourth inning. Things unraveled in the fifth when San Diego plated six runs. He's allowed just two runs over 10 innings this season before Monday's rough outing. Ross saw his ERA jump to 4.91 alongside a 14:8 K:BB. Ross is projected to take the mound in St. Louis this weekend.
Apr 9 2024Ross (1-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Reds, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross looked good Tuesday, holding Cincinnati to a lone run through his first six innings en route to his first big-league win since 2021. The 30-year-old right-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 10 innings through his first two starts. Ross figures to remain in the rotation until Wade Miley (shoulder) and Jakob Junis (shoulder) are able to return. He's currently in line to face the Padres in his next start early next week.
Apr 3 2024Ross came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Twins, giving up two hits and five walks over 3.2 scoreless innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first big-league start since late 2021, Ross threw only 38 of 73 pitches for strikes before being lifted, although he was able to avoid any damage from all the traffic he put on the basepaths. Despite the shaky outing, he might not be in much danger of losing his spot in the rotation for the time being. Per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee will likely need to use a six-man rotation over the next month, as the team is scheduled for 13 games in a row and 26 over the next 27 days.
Mar 31 2024Ross will start Wednesday's game against the Twins, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross hasn't pitched in the majors since 2021 and had a 4.50 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 12 innings during spring training. Wade Miley is on the injured list with a shoulder impingement, but the expectation is that he will join the rotation sometime around April 9 or later that week. Once Miley returns, Ross would be a candidate to move to long relief.
Mar 15 2024Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Friday that he views Ross primarily as a starting pitcher, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Murphy didn't confirm Ross would be in the Brewers' starting rotation Opening Day, but Murphy's statement does suggest that Ross is more likely to be sent to Triple-A Nashville than come out of Milwaukee's bullpen should the 30-year-old righty lose out on a starting job. Ross hasn't pitched in the majors since 2021 and has surrendered five runs across seven innings so far this spring.
Dec 4 2023Ross signed a one-year, major-league contract with the Brewers on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross has thrown a combined 17 innings over the last two seasons -- none of them at the major-league level -- following a second Tommy John surgery. However, that hasn't stopped the Brewers from handing the right-hander a major-league deal in hopes that he's healthy and ready to contribute in 2024. Ross, 30, holds a career 4.26 ERA and 403:141 K:BB over 443.1 innings at the big-league level.
Jan 30 2023Ross (elbow) agreed Monday with the Giants on a minor-league contract and received an invitation to MLB spring training, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Ross underwent Tommy John surgery last May for the second time in his career and will likely miss the start of the 2023 season while recovering from the procedure. The 29-year-old made 20 appearances (19 starts) for the Nationals in 2021 while posting a 4.17 ERA and 109:34 K:BB in 108 innings. Ross could be a rotation option for the Giants in the second half of the season if he responds well to his rehab program, but he can safely be ignored in even the deepest of fantasy leagues until he reaches the point where he's pitching in minor-league games.

Jul 7 2018Ross (elbow) threw 25 pitches in a simulated game Friday, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. "Wherever I can fit in, especially in September hopefully with extended rosters, as long as I can hopefully get out there and throw some innings, I'll be happy," Ross said about his chances of contributing this season. "That's really what I'm working toward."The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery almost one year ago, but so far he's been limited to workouts at the Nats' spring training complex. There's been no indication yet that Ross is ready to begin a rehab assignment, but he still has enough time to work his way back into game shape and rejoin the big-league roster for the stretch run, even if he only ends up pitching out of the bullpen. Expect the 25-year-old to be in the hunt for a rotation spot during spring training next year.
Jul 7 2018Ross (elbow) threw 25 pitches in a simulated game Friday for the Nationals' coaching staff, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. Expect the 25-year-old to be in the hunt for a rotation spot during spring training next year.
Jul 5 2018Ross (elbow) said Wednesday that he has resumed throwing off a mound and is close to facing hitters, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. Now at the 11-month mark in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, Ross seems to be progressing as anticipated. He'll likely require several more weeks to build up the intensity of his bullpen sessions and the frequency with which he faces hitters before the Nationals send him out on a minor-league rehab assignment. There's a slight chance he could rejoin the Nationals late in the second half if he endures no setbacks, but the team would most likely deploy him in relief in that scenario.
Jun 30 2018Ross (elbow) has started throwing and might participate in a bullpen session in the coming week, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2017 and probably will need at least another month of workouts before seeing game action merely in a rehab capacity. Still, it wouldn't be surprising if Washington adds him to the major-league staff this season if he responds well to these tests. Whatever role Washington is comfortable assigning him will determine whether fantasy players can scrape value out of him in 2018. He's more of a 2019 play, so forward-looking keeper and dynasty managers could tuck him away.
Feb 21 2018Ross (elbow) was place on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. This was strictly a procedural move as Ross is expected to be remain sidelined until August at the earliest, as he continues to recover from Tommy John surgery he underwent in July of 2017. In a corresponding move, the club signed Joaquin Benoit and added him to the 40-man roster. Ross has been able to progress up to 75 feet within the past few days and will continue to ease his way back into baseball activities throughout the spring.
Feb 17 2018Ross (elbow) has progressed to throwing from 75 feet, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports.Ross, who underwent Tommy John surgery last July, resumed baseball activities at the beginning of January and has steadily ramped things up since. While he remains without a timetable for his return, the 24-year-old said he's aiming to be back around July or August, though that's just a personal goal and his actual timetable should clear up as he continues to progress in his rehab. Either way, he's still expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2018 campaign.
Nov 4 2017Ross (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day DL on Friday.Ross started 13 games for the Nationals this season, and went down with a right elbow sprain, that required Tommy John surgery, in mid-July. Looking ahead, Ross will likely miss most, if not all, of the 2018 campaign while recovering from this setback.
Jul 19 2017Ross (elbow) successfully underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.Ross now begins the long road towards recovery, and likely won't be back in the major leagues until the middle of the 2018 season. It's an unfortunate end to a tough season for the 24-year-old, as he finishes 2017 with a 5.01 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 13 starts, a sharp decline from his numbers a year earlier. Edwin Jackson will take over his place in the rotation moving forward.
Jul 16 2017Ross was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday, Dan Kolko of MASN Sports reports. This move was to be expected following the news that Ross would require Tommy John surgery, effectively ending his 2017 campaign. With the Nationals acquiring relievers Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson, the club officially placed Ross on the 60-day DL, clearing up room for their incoming pitchers.
Jul 15 2017Ross (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports. This is a tough development for Ross, who was initially diagnosed with triceps tenderness before further testing revealed that he'd need to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his UCL. The general timeline for a return from Tommy John is 12-14 months, which could put Ross' status for the 2018 season in question. Once Ross undergoes the procedure and begins his rehab process, the Nationals figure to have a firmer timetable for his return. In any case, it appears Ross' 2017 campaign will end with a 5.01 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP, and an 8.10 K/9 rate over 73.2 innings.
Jul 14 2017Ross (triceps) isn't listed as the Nationals' fifth starter coming out of the All-Star break for their first turn through the rotation, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. He was pulled early from his start right before the All-Star break with his velocity down and was sent for an MRI due to what was described as tightness in his tricep, but the team has yet to announce the results of the testing. Ross had been getting back on track prior to the injury, posting a 2.95 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB in 39.2 innings over six starts heading into Sunday, so the timing is disappointing for fantasy GMs who'd stuck with the right-hander through his early-season struggles. The Nats haven't yet announced who will make the start Tuesday in Ross' place, but with two off days within a week coming up for the club after that, whoever it is isn't likely to remain in the rotation for long.
Jul 14 2017Ross was placed on the 10-day DL on Friday with a right elbow sprain, Dan Kolko of MASN Sports reports. The injury was initially labeled as "triceps tenderness," but the Nats offered up this new diagnosis when they formally placed Ross on the DL. This is a troubling development -- the ligament is typically involved when a sprain is mentioned -- and it's uncertain when Ross will pitch again in 2017, if at all. Jacob Turner is slated to serve as Washington's fifth starter for the time being.
Jul 14 2017Ross (triceps) will land on the disabled list Friday, The Washington Post's Chelsea Janes reports.Ross exited during his start Sunday in the fourth inning with triceps tenderness and wasn't listed as the Nationals' fifth starter coming out of the All-Star break. Instead, the team will recall Jacob Turner from Triple-A Syracuse to make the start against the Angels on Tuesday while Ross recovers from his injury. Although Ross has been pitching well as of late, the team will be cautious with the right-hander and give him ample time off to heal, especially if this winds up being a significant issue. Ross underwent an MRI after Sunday's start, and there should be a more definitive timetable moving forward once the team releases the results.
Jul 14 2017Ross (triceps) isn't listed as the Nationals' fifth starter coming out of the All-Star break for the first turn through the rotation, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. He left his start Sunday early with his velocity down and was sent for an MRI due to what was described as tightness in his tricep, but the team has yet to announce the results of the testing. The Nats haven't yet announced who will make the start Tuesday in Ross' place, but with two off days within a week coming up after that, whoever it is isn't likely to remain in the rotation for long.
Jul 9 2017Ross left Sunday's start in the fourth inning with an apparent arm injury. His fastball was clocking in at 86-87 mph before his exit, Dan Kolko of MASN Sports reports. As Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports, this is not the first time this season that Ross' fastball velocity has dipped into the 80s, as it happened in April and he was able to get it back. Still, it's hard not to fear the worst, given his previous injury history and his brother Tyson's injury history. Ross used to sit in the mid-90s, and has been working most of this year at 91-93 mph. He gave up three runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings against the Braves before exiting.
Jul 9 2017Ross, who left Sunday's game in the fourth inning, was diagnosed with triceps tenderness and has been sent for an MRI, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports. His fastball velocity was down to 86-87 mph before he exited, so it certainly seems like something is amiss. We will have to await the results of his MRI for a better sense of how long he will be out, but it would not be surprising if he was unable to take the ball in the first rotation turn of the second half.
Jul 4 2017Ross (5-3) held the Mets to a pair of runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out six over seven innings in Tuesday's win.He allowed too many baserunners in this one, and yet both Mets runs came on solo homers, including Jose Reyes' leadoff shot in the first inning. Ross has had difficulty with the long ball this year, surrendering 17 of them in his 70.1 innings across 12 starts, and that -- along with a .333 BABIP -- has made him an inconsistent fantasy commodity. His 4.86 ERA and 1.46 WHIP aren't impressing anyone, but Ross has allowed only seven earned runs over his last four starts, accumulating a 2.36 ERA in that span, so he's showing some positive signs. The 24-year-old is next slated to start Sunday in the Nationals' final game before the All-Star break.
Jun 29 2017Ross took the no-decision Thursday against the Cubs. He allowed two earned runs over 6.2 innings while fanning seven batters and issuing three walks.Although the Nationals couldn't hold on to preserve the win for Ross on Thursday, it was still another strong outing from the 24-year-old. He crossed the 6.0-inning threshold for the fourth time in his last five outings as he continues to put his rough start to the season farther and farther in the rear view mirror. If the Nationals stick to their current rotation, Ross is in line to make two more starts before the break, with the first of those outings coming Tuesday against the Mets.
Jun 24 2017Ross (4-3) allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings to earn the victory Saturday against the Reds.Ross was provided a ton of offensive support as he easily sailed to his fourth victory of the campaign. Although he's had plenty of ugly outings this season, he's now held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in three of his last four outings, and despite an ERA well over five, he might be turning a corner toward consistent fantasy relevance. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Cubs.
Jun 18 2017Ross (3-3) allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits and one walk across six innings in Sunday's loss to the Mets. He struck out four.Ross was foiled by opposing starter Jacob deGrom on this day, as the latter launched a solo home run and put a sacrifice bunt down that led to another run, all while out-dueling him on the mound. A pair of unearned runs following a Matt Wieters error in the fourth inning didn't help his cause and partially contributed to his removal with an elevated pitch count after six frames. While Ross was far from perfect, this was something of a bounce-back effort after he was hit hard in his previous outing and gives him two quality starts in his last three tries. He still owns an uninspiring 5.98 ERA on the season and will look to right the ship against the Reds in his next start on Saturday.
Jun 13 2017Ross allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks across 5.2 innings in Tuesday's no-decision versus the Braves. He struck out two.Ross played with fire all night and was finally breached in the fourth inning, when Dansby Swanson doubled in a pair of runs. He was stung again in the sixth by a two-run home run from Rio Ruiz and saw another run tacked onto his ledger when the bullpen allowed an inherited runner to score. Ross has delivered a pair of brilliant outings since returning from a stint in the minor leagues, but he has allowed five or more runs in each of his other three outings and owns a 6.39 ERA after this latest showing. He is currently scheduled to start Sunday against the Mets, but his place in the rotation could be jeopardized by another poor performance.
Jun 8 2017Ross (3-2) fired 7.1 innings of one-run ball with 12 strikeouts, four hits and no walks Thursday against the Orioles during the Nationals' 6-1 win.The fortunate recipient of a plethora of run support this season, Ross clearly did not need much help against Baltimore. He had lost each of his last two starts against the A's and Padres while allowing 12 runs - eleven earned - in seven combined innings. The Nationals have now won six of the right-hander's seven starts.
Jun 3 2017Ross (2-2) allowed seven runs, six of which were earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out five over three innings to take the loss Saturday against the Athletics.Ross gave up a pair of two-run homers in the first inning and never really got on track aside from fanning five hitters. He's allowed at least five runs in four of his last five starts, and his 7.34 ERA makes him a player to aggressively avoid having on fantasy rosters. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Orioles.
May 29 2017Ross (1-2) allowed five runs on 12 hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings in Sundays' 5-3 loss to the Padres. As had been the case prior to his demotion to Triple-A earlier in the season, Ross lost his arm slot and his pitches flattened out, leading to a barrage of hits from San Diego. The Nats are committed to having him as a starter this year, but if his struggles continue the next step might be spending some time in the bullpen while he works on his mechanics. Ross' next start is scheduled for Saturday in Oakland.
May 23 2017Ross was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse and will start Tuesday's game against the Mariners, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. As expected, Ross will rejoin the Nationals ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday night. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball during his last rehab appearance, so we'll see if the mechanical adjustments he made help him with the big club. Brian Goodwin was sent back to Syracuse in a corresponding move.
May 23 2017Ross (2-0) pitched eight innings, allowing one run on five hits with six strikeouts in Tuesday's win over the Mariners. In his first game since being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, Ross dominated the Mariners in a 10-1 win, allowing jut five baserunners over a career high-tying eight innings. After allowing a single to lead off the game, Ross set down the next 12 men he faced as his offense built him a comfortable lead. With the strong performance, Ross likely earned himself another start on Sunday against the Padres.
May 17 2017Ross is attempting to correct a flaw in his delivery that has caused his arm slot to drop this season, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. "Usually when the arm drops it's fatigue," Nationals pitching coach Mike Maddux said. "He seemed to fatigue early. The first couple innings, [his arm slot] would be where it needs to be. Then the last couple innings, it would drop and his ball would flatten out."The 23-year-old looked a little better in his most recent start for Triple-A Syracuse, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Friday while striking out three, but as yet the Nats are putting no timetable on his return to the majors. The organization still views Ross as a key part of the rotation plans for the future, so expect the Nats to be a bit cautious with him and make sure he's comfortable with his mechanics before bringing him back into the fold. Fantasy GMs that have kept Ross stashed on their bench will need to be patient, but he should be in the Washington rotation again once he's getting consistent results at Triple-A.
May 2 2017Ross was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports.Ross has failed to escape the fifth inning in his last two starts and owns a 7.47 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 15.2 frames on the season, but it's still somewhat surprising that the Nationals dropped him from the rotation. The Nationals will need to fill Ross' next scheduled start Saturday against the Phillies, but the team hasn't offered any indication who will replace him in the rotation. Jacob Turner, who performed admirably in a spot start at Coors Field last week when Stephen Strasburg was on the paternity list, could be a candidate to rejoin the starting ranks after recently moving to the bullpen.
Apr 30 2017Ross allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five batters over four innings during Sunday's win over the Mets. With Washington putting 23 runs on the board, it's discouraging that Ross couldn't navigate his way through five innings and collect the win. It's also the second consecutive game he's failed to pitch five frames. There's definitely upside here, though. The 23-year-old righty posted a 3.52 ERA and 8.0 K/9 over 35 games the past two seasons, after all. Ross will look to put it all together in his next start against Philadelphia.
Apr 26 2017Ross (1-0) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings while striking out two in Tuesday's 15-12 win over the Rockies.Fantasy GMs who risked using the 23-year-old in Coors Field were very nearly rewarded with a win when the Nats jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the top of the second inning, but Ross got scored upon in each of the next four frames to get chased from the game one out shy of the minimum five innings. He should be able to put together a better result in his next start, back home at sea level Sunday against the Mets.
Apr 24 2017Ross will have his next start pushed to Tuesday. With Stephen Strasburg headed to the paternity list, Jacob Turner is getting called up from Triple-A Syracuse to take Monday's start, bumping the rest of the rotation back a day. Ross still has a two-start week with the first outing coming in Coors Field, but he'll at least get an extra day to prepare for that crucible.
Apr 20 2017Ross (1-0) gave up three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings in Wednesday's 14-4 win over the Braves.Atlanta got to him for two runs in the first inning, but Ross settled down after that and cruised to an easy victory in his 2017 debut thanks to massive run support. The 23-year-old threw 66 of 100 pitches for strikes, and despite his delayed start to the campaign it doesn't appear as though the Nats will have any restrictions on his usage going forward. Those with fantasy shares in Ross will have to think carefully about whether to have him active for his next start Monday in Colorado, though.
Apr 19 2017Ross was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse and will start Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports. With the Nationals needing a fifth starter for only the second time all season, Ross will finally make his 2017 debut Wednesday after spending the first two weeks of the campaign with Syracuse. Barring a string of poor performances, Ross should be locked into a rotation spot for good, though the Nationals figure to manage the 23-year-old's workload somewhat carefully this season. He covered 105 frames for the big club in 2016 churning out a 3.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 93 strikeouts.
Mar 31 2017Ross may begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse in order to open up a spot on the 25-man roster through the early part of the Nationals' schedule, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. The 23-year-old will still be the Nats' fifth starter, but the team doesn't need a fifth starter until April 9 and Ross has minor-league options left. Sending him down would allow Washington to keep Jeremy Guthrie as a long reliever without sacrificing a bench spot, but it would only delay a tough roster decision until the second week of the regular season. If Ross does get optioned down it shouldn't impact his overall fantasy value, but it could create an interesting opportunity in leagues with late auctions that require a player to be on a 25-man roster to be eligible for a bid.
Mar 19 2017Ross allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out three in 4.2 innings during Saturday's GGrapefruit League game against the Astros. His defense did him no favors Saturday, but Ross still has a strong 2.70 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB through 13.1 spring innings. The 23-year-old seems nearly ready for Opening Day, and if he's able to stay healthy in 2017 he should be able to approach 30 starts and 200 innings for the first time in the majors.
Mar 13 2017Ross held the Astros scoreless for four innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out four, in Sunday's Grapefruit League game.He was throwing to new Nats catcher Matt Wieters for the first time in a game setting, so his strong performance was doubly encouraging. Ross now has a 2.08 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB through 8.2 spring innings, and seems ready to hit the ground running once Opening Day rolls around.
Mar 8 2017Ross tossed 2.2 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three. The runs scored on back-to-back solo homers by Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez, as Ross found himself fighting his mechanics a little on the mound and wasn't able to locate his pitches effectively. He still has plenty of time to work out the kinks before Opening Day, however, and the 23-year-old could have a big season from the middle of the Nats' rotation if he can stay healthy.
Mar 2 2017Ross tossed two shutout innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers, allowing one hit and striking out one.The 23-year-old battled shoulder issues in 2016, but Ross appears to be fully healthy headed into this season. His career high for innings pitched in a season is 152.2 (across three levels in 2015), but if he stays off the shelf he should be able to top that and take a run at his first major league campaign with double-digit wins and triple-digit strikeouts.
Feb 16 2017Ross plans on focusing on the development of his changeup this spring, The Washington Post reports. "That's probably the biggest thing I'm going to work on throughout the spring," Ross said Tuesday. "I'm going to try to get with Max [Scherzer] and [Stephen Strasburg], I think, because obviously their changeups are pretty phenomenal. But just trying to stick with them and pick up a few things every day. And honestly, just keep throwing it. I can talk about it as much as I want, but until I actually throw it and start getting on the mound with it, nothing much is going to change."He threw the pitch 8.8 percent of the time last year, and it was more effective than it had been in 2015, but it's still far from a reliable pitch for Ross. An improved change should help him against left-handed hitters, who slashed .313/.385/.439 against him last season, and allow him to take the next step forward as a pitcher, but wait to see whether he shows a feel for it in Grapefruit League action before expecting any sort of breakout campaign from the 23-year-old.
Oct 11 2016Ross will start Game 4 of the NLDS on Tuesday against the Dodgers, MLB.com's Jamal Collier reports.Ross will take the ball Tuesday for the first time this postseason with the Nationals looking to clinch the series victory. Ross squared off against the Dodgers earlier this season on June 22 and allowed two earned runs while posting a 5:1 K:BB over 6.1 innings.
Sep 29 2016Ross went four innings against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.The right-hander was not especially efficient, needing 90 pitches to complete the four frames, but what's important is that he's rebuilt his strength in time for the postseason. Ross missed two and a half months due to a shoulder injury, limiting him to 19 starts during the course of the 2016 campaign. He appears on track to start a game in the NLDS with Stephen Strasburg unavailable due to an elbow issue.
Sep 24 2016Ross allowed one run on five hits, struck out four and walked one over 2.2 innings against the Pirates on Saturday.Still recovering from a shoulder injury, the Nationals limited Ross to 63 pitches. Washington won the game, clinching the division, but the goal with Ross at this point is to build up his stamina and ensure he is healthy for the postseason. He is 7-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 88 strikeouts in 101 innings this season.
Sep 18 2016Ross (shoulder) was activated from the 60-day DL on Sunday, William Ladson of MLB.com reports. The move is essentially a formality, as the Nationals announced Saturday that Ross would be activated in order to start Sunday's game against the Braves. Ross has not pitched since early and holds a 3.49 ERA and 1.26 WHIP on the season.
Sep 17 2016Ross (shoulder) will be activated to start Sunday's game against the Braves, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. With Ross' simulated game last Saturday and his subsequent bullpen session going off without a hitch, he'll be cleared to rejoin the Nats' rotation for the first time in two and a half months. Assuming he suffers no setbacks along the way, Ross should be in line for three starts to close out the regular season, which will serve as a means of evaluation for a potential rotation spot in the playoffs. After not clearing 60 pitches in any of his three rehab starts or the sim game, it's expected that Ross will face an innings or pitch limit in Sunday's contest, making him an unattractive DFS play in an appealing matchup.
Sep 10 2016Ross (shoulder) threw a 60-pitch simulated game Saturday, MLB.com's Jamal Collier reports.Manager Dusty Baker said he was encouraged by Ross's command in the sim game. He threw roughly 60 pitches in his final rehab start, and apparently the plan was for him to throw another 60 on Saturday, so it should not be alarming that he didn't up his pitch count. It's possible he could return to the rotation at some point next weekend in Atlanta, but owners will have to await official word as to what the next step will be for Ross.
Sep 6 2016Ross (shoulder) will likely throw a simulated game later this week in what could be the final step before he returns to the rotation, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Chase Hughes reports. He threw 42 pitches in three innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, and also threw another 20 in a side bullpen session that day, essentially building up his pitch count to just over 60 pitches. His next step will require him throwing around 80 pitches in a simulated game, likely this weekend. Manager Dusty Baker wouldn't commit to saying Ross would be ready to return after a simulated game, saying he may still need to be piggybacked if he returned to the rotation in the middle of next week. Stay tuned for more specific details about the timeline for his return to the rotation, but it sounds like a return next weekend is within reach.
Sep 4 2016Ross (shoulder) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Monday, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.Monday's outing will be Ross' third since heading out for his second attempt at a rehab assignment last Sunday. Ross may need another session after Monday's to further build his pitch count, but with minor league seasons coming to a close, it remains to be seen what his next step will be.
Sep 2 2016Ross (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Friday. This will not affect Ross' eligibility for a return, as he's already missed two months due to the shoulder issue. Ross threw 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen at Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday (31 pitches) in his second appearance since resuming his rehab assignment.
Aug 29 2016Ross (shoulder) is scheduled to make another rehab appearance Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASN reports.Ross tossed one inning at Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday and came away without issue. As such, he'll get back on the mound Wednesday for what's expected to be an extended appearance, with the team hoping to work him up to around 80 pitches. Ross remains on track to return to the Nationals sometime in early September.
Aug 27 2016Ross (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday, Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reports. After tossing a successful bullpen session Thursday, Ross will progress to live game action as he continues to work toward a return to the big league club. Ross remains without a firm timetable, but the prevailing belief is that he could be back with the Nationals sometime early next month.
Aug 25 2016Ross (shoulder) threw a successful bullpen session Thursday, Chase Hughes of CSN Massachusetts reports.Ross had what manager Dusty Baker described as another "very good" session, and the team is confident that the right-hander has made significant progress in the last handful of days. The next step is for Ross to head out on a rehab assignment, though the Nats have not yet revealed when/where that will take place.
Aug 23 2016Ross (shoulder) is "feeling great" after throwing a 25-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Chase Hughes of CSN Mid Atlantic reports.Tuesday marked a major step forward in Ross' rehab as he was able to get on a mound after several stops, starts, and delays over the past month to allow his shoulder inflammation to subside. He was able to throw 25 pitches without issue, so the Nationals will likely wait to see how he's feeling Wednesday before deciding the next step of the process. Given the length of his rehab, Ross could need a couple more bullpen sessions before returning to game action.
Aug 22 2016Ross (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, MASN's Dan Kolko reports. It's taken Ross a little longer to get back on the mound than the Nationals hoped, but it appears he is finally ready to do so. Ross' next step after that has yet to be determined, but with potential rehab opportunities evaporating with the minor league season winding down, the Nationals are considering bringing him back as a reliever -- at least temporarily -- in order to build up his pitch count in that role.
Aug 21 2016Ross (shoulder) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session this past week but did not do so, according to CSN's Mark Zuckerman.Ross appeared to be on track to throw a bullpen session last Tuesday or Wednesday, but this report notes that he has still not reached that point in his recovery. Ross has been playing catch on flat ground regularly, so he should have a chance to thrown from a mound at some point this week.
Aug 15 2016Ross (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday or Wednesday during the Nationals' current series with the Rockies, Byron Kerr of MASN reports.Depending on how the bullpen session goes, Ross may be ready for a rehab assignment soon. He has been out since July 2 due to the shoulder injury, and if he isn't ready to start pitching soon, he may struggle to return. Minor league seasons will be ending in late August and early September, which will make it hard for him to find an opportunity to shake the rust off before making a return to the rotation. We'll know more about the club's plan for Ross after his bullpen session.
Aug 13 2016Ross (shoulder) threw in the outfield prior to Saturday's game and came out of it well, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Chase Hughes reports. This is the second day in a row that he has thrown with no setbacks. He will likely progress to a bullpen session at some point in the near future, and then he would be nearing a rehab assignment. Right now, Reynaldo Lopez is occupying Ross's spot in the rotation, but Ross will have no problem getting that spot back if he can return before the end of the season. If everything were to go smoothly from here in his recovery, an early-September return could be within reach.
Aug 12 2016Ross (shoulder) played catch on Friday but still has no timetable on his return, William Ladson of MLB.com reports.Ross will need to continue to have successful sessions playing catch before he can be considered to go out on a rehab assignment. If Ross continues to progress, he could return to the Nationals rotation sometime in September. Fantasy owners shouldn't count on this as Ross was already shut down once after making a couple of rehab appearances.
Aug 5 2016Ross (shoulder) has been pulled from his rehab assingment due to shoulder soreness, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Chase Hughes reports. This is a big blow to the Nationals and those who were hoping Ross would help their fantasy teams in the near future. He will be shut down for now to see if rest can alleviate the soreness, but it's certainly not a lock that he will return for the Nationals this season. In the meantime, Washington can go with a four-man rotation until Aug. 16, at which point Lucas Giolito or Reynaldo Lopez could be recalled to step into the rotation. The Nationals could also opt to bring someone up from Triple-A sooner than that date if they want to give their core four starters a bit of a breather.
Aug 1 2016Ross (shoulder) will likely pitch just one more rehab start at Triple-A Syracuse, Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reports.Manager Dusty Baker expects Ross to return to the rotation Aug. 16, the next time the Nationals will need a fifth starter. The right-hander made his second rehab start Saturday, allowing seven hits and three earned runs over 4.2 innings.
Jul 30 2016Ross (shoulder) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports. After a successful first outing with Low-A Hagerstown last Sunday, Ross is now set to advance his rehab to the top minor league affiliate for Saturday's start. Nothing's definite, but the expectation is that Ross will need at least one additional start beyond Saturday to prepare for a return the majors, as he only built his pitch count up to 43 in his appearance with Hagerstown.
Jul 26 2016Ross (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and will need another start or two before being activated by the Nationals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports.Ross threw a successful three innings on Sunday during a rehab appearance for Low-A Hagerstown. He spent most of the outing working on a mechanical fix with his changeup. It was thought that Ross might be able to return to the Nationals later this week, but it now looks like that has been pushed back another week or so as he continues to recover from his injured shoulder.
Jul 22 2016Ross (shoulder) will make a rehab start on Sunday for Class-A Hagerstown, Dan Kolko of MASN reports. If all goes well for Ross in his rehab start, he could rejoin the Nationals rotation next Saturday against the Giants. Ross has been on the disabled list since July 3 with shoulder inflammation.
Jul 20 2016Nationals manager Dusty Baker said that Ross will make a rehab start, which would rule him out to start on Sunday, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports. At this time it's unclear when or where this rehab outing will take place. If all goes well in his start, Ross is in line to return at some point next week. Lucas Giolito looks like the clear favorite to start for the Nationals on Sunday.
Jul 19 2016Ross (shoulder) threw a simulated game Tuesday afternoon, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports.Ross continues to work his way back into form while nursing some inflammation in his throwing shoulder. The right-hander remains without a definitive return timeline, and at this point it's unclear if the Nats plan to send him out on a rehab assignment. The most likely scenario would likely be a couple of bullpen sessions, though the team will certainly exercise caution.
Jul 19 2016Ross (shoulder) threw a simulated game at Nationals park on Tuesday, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports.Ross has been sidelined since early July with shoulder inflammation but has proceeded through his rehab with no setbacks so far. He began throwing off flat ground several weeks ago, took part in pregame drills Friday, and has now taken another step forward by tossing a simulated game. It's unclear whether he'll require a rehab assignment but he appears to be near the tail-end of his DL stint.
Jul 16 2016Ross (shoulder) took part in pre-game drills Friday and will likely throw a bullpen session this weekend, The Washington Post reports. "I'm feeling better," Ross said. "Feels like everyday, I'm feeling a little stronger. I don't know exactly what the plan is yet - still have a couple days before I can come back."The Nats don't need a fifth starter until next weekend's home series against the Padres, which should give Ross enough time to throw a couple of bullpens prior to coming off the DL. If he has any kind of setback though, or the team decides he needs a minor league rehab assignment, Lucas Giolito would likely be called back up instead for another spot start or two.

Jul 9 2016Ross (shoulder) threw off flat ground Saturday prior to Washington's game against the Mets, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports. The right-hander was placed on the disabled list last Sunday, one day after he experienced reduced velocity.Nationals pitching coach Mike Maddux was on hand for the session and indicated Ross was "throwing free and easy." Ross will throw a bullpen session during the All-Star break and hopefully, according to manager Dusty Baker, will be able to pitch when Washington next needs a fifth starter, July 22 at home against the Padres.
Jul 3 2016Ross allowed four runs on 10 hits, struck out two and walked none over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Reds on Saturday. He was in trouble the first three innings of the game, but Ross worked out of a pickle in the third and then retired seven of the last 10 batters he faced. He's allowed exactly four runs and 10 hits in each of his last two starts, but Ross still has respectable numbers with a 7-4 record, 3.49 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 95.1 innings. His next start will be Thursday against the Mets.
Jul 3 2016An MRI on Sunday morning revealed the shoulder inflammation that led to Ross getting placed on the DL, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.Ross will effectively be held out through the All-Star break, with top prospect Lucas Giolito in line to take over his spot in the rotation on a temporary basis. The Nationals will likely be careful with Giolito's innings this season, so look for Ross to claim back his rotation spot once he returns. Shoulder issues can be tricky, however, so fantasy owners considering a trade involving either of these players should keep a close eye on the situation.
Jul 3 2016Ross has been placed on the 15-day DL due to right shoulder inflammation, Dan Kolko of MASN Sports reports.Ross suffered a noteworthy drop in velocity during Saturday's start, and it now appears that some shoulder inflammation was the culprit. The team will take a conservative approach by putting the right-hander on the DL, a move that also freed up a roster spot for Sunday's starter, Stephen Strasburg. There has been little indication of a serious ailment in play, but the team is unlikely to update his condition until after the All Star break. Ross will first be eligible to return July 17.
Jul 3 2016Ross experienced a noteworthy drop in velocity during his start against the Reds on Saturday, CSN Mid-Atlantic reports.Ross was hit around a bit in the early parts of Saturday's start, but at that time, his velocity remained normal, with his fastball topping out at 94-95 MPH during the first few innings. As his start came to a close, however, his fastball velocity was regularly 90 MPH or below. The right-hander averaged 93.4 MPH on his fastball heading into Saturday's start, so the sudden decrease has forced the Nationals to examine whether or not there is an injury in play. The 23-year-old doesn't believe he is injured, but the Nationals will take every precaution to see if they can get his velocity numbers back on track for his next scheduled start Thursday.
Jun 27 2016Ross (7-4) rode the Nationals offense to victory over the Mets on Monday after allowing four runs on 10 hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in six innings.Ross gave up the game's first four runs, but ended up victorious nonetheless in what was ultimately a blowout 11-4 affair. He's now 4-0 in his last seven starts, and has a great chance of keeping the good times rolling with a Saturday home matchup against the Reds next on tap.
Jun 26 2016Ross has been confirmed as Monday's starter against the Mets, Dan Kolko of MASN Sports reports.Ross' start will be bumped up due to Stephen Strasburg's scratched start Sunday and subsequent placement on the disabled list, while a pitcher (possibly Lucas Giolito) will be recalled to start Tuesday. While Ross would have two starts next week regardless, it could result in another turn in the rotation late in the season. Either way, he will face two stagnant offenses in the Mets and Reds in his two starts, making him an attractive pitching option this week.
Jun 23 2016Ross didn't factor into the decision versus the Dodgers on Wednesday, surrendering seven hits, two earned runs and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out five.It was another strong outing for the 23-year-old, who produced his fifth quality start in the last six trips to the mound. Ross was able to induce double-digit swinging strikes (10), but did give up a homer for the fourth straight appearance when Corey Seager took him deep for a solo shot in the third. He also helped his own cause with two hits in three at-bats, including an RBI double in the second. The right-hander has enjoyed a solid sophomore campaign overall, although Wednesday's outing was arguably his best of his four June starts. His ERA has crept up this month-- from 2.37 to 3.11 --but Ross continues to provide strong outings more often than not. He'll look to get back into the win column versus the Mets next Tuesday.
Jun 17 2016Ross improved to 6-4 Friday versus the Padres, allowing three runs with six strikeouts and two walks across six innings.Ross fell behind early after allowing a two-run homer to Matt Kemp in the bottom of the first, but he settled down and yielded just one run over the next five frames. He had allowed eight earned runs in 11 innings over his previous two starts, failing to win either, so Friday's effort was an encouraging sign. He will look to deliver his third straight quality start Wednesday at the Dodgers.
Jun 7 2016Ross lasted just four innings in Tuesday's start versus the White Sox after allowing five runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out five and did not factor into the decision.Ross set a season-high in free passes as all of the damage against him was done in the first two innings, resulting in his shortest injury-free start of the year. He entered the game with a stellar 2.37 ERA and a solid 1.15 WHIP, indicating that he should bounce back sooner rather than later. He will have the opportunity to do just that, as his next start will come Sunday at home versus the Phillies.
May 16 2016Ross (3-3) took the loss against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks over 5.2 innings while striking out three. It's the second straight start in which Ross has surrendered five runs, although Miami some help from his defense in this one. Ross still has a solid 2.63 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through seven starts and 41 innings on the season and he'll get another crack at the Marlins, albeit on the road, in his next start Saturday.
May 13 2016Ross will have his start moved up to Sunday against the Marlins, Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports reports. This comes as a result of Stephen Strasburg being bumped up to pitch the first game of the Nationals doubleheader with the Marlins on Saturday. This changes Ross' outlook a good amount, as rather than having a two-start week next week, he'll get an additional start this week. He'll also get to face off against the Marlins instead of the Mets, the former of which being a team he possesses a 1.00 ERA against in two starts this season.
May 10 2016Ross (3-2) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts over six innings in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers.Other than a start April 20 in which an injury forced him out after two scoreless innings, Ross had a quality start in his other four starts of the season. Ross was one inning away from his fifth, but he allowed three singles and a walk as he ran out of gas in the sixth inning. Still, the 23-year-old has been fantastic to begin the year, as he still owns a 2.29 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 35.1 innings, a strong follow up to last year's rookie season in which he posted a 3.64 ERA and 1.109 WHIP in 13 starts.
May 5 2016Ross (3-1) struck out a season-high nine while allowing just two runs on five hits over 6.2 innings Thursday. but was stuck with a loss against the Cubs. He walked two and hit a batter.Other than a fourth-inning mini rally in which he let the Cubs load the bases and then gave up a two-run single to Ben Zobrist, Ross was stellar in this one -- he only allowed four men to reach base in the entire rest of the outing combined. However, opposing starter Kyle Hendricks held the Washington offense down, sending Ross to his first loss of the year. The young hurler (who'll turn 23 in a couple weeks) still has a 1.23 ERA in his first five starts, and he should see his strikeout rate continue to rebound. However, he'll get a tough draw in his next start Tuesday against the impressive Tigers offense.
May 1 2016Ross (3-0) tossed six innings Saturday in his return from a blister, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out four to pick up the win over the Cardinals. He now has a stellar 0.79 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 14:7 K:BB through 22.2 innings and four starts this season, and he has yet to give up a home run. Ross got off to a quick start after being called up in 2015 as well before fading a bit, but even after his hot streak runs its course he should be able to settle in as a solid mid-rotation starter for the Nats. He'll next take the mound Thursday, on the road against the Cubs.
Apr 30 2016Ross will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Dan Kolko of MASN reports.Ross was dealing with a blister on his finger earlier in the week, but he said all along that he expected to make his next start. The right-hander will take the mound Saturday afternoon seeking his third win of the season. Ross has allowed nine hits but only one earned run in 16.2 innings thus far.
Apr 26 2016Ross (blister) said Tuesday that he expects to make his next scheduled start, MASN.com reports. The Nats decided to play it safe and skip Ross on Tuesday after he was forced to leave his last start after two innings with a blister on his right middle finger. Ross said that the finger is "feeling good" and that he probably could have pitched Tuesday if necessary. He is expected to throw a bullpen session Wednesday in preparation for a weekend start in St. Louis.
Apr 24 2016Ross will have his next turn in the rotation skipped while he recovers from a blister on his right middle finger, Dan Kolko of MASN reports.Ross had been scheduled to take the mound in Tuesday's series opener against the Phillies, but the team will instead take a conservative approach and allow the blister more time to heal. Since the Nationals have a team day off Monday, they will simply skip Ross's turn and allow ace Max Scherzer to start on regular rest. Look for Ross to return to the rotation during the weekend series in St. Louis, provided the blister recovers as planned.
Apr 24 2016Ross (blister) will be skipped in the rotation if he's not ready to pitch when his turn comes up Tuesday, Jamal Collier of MLB.com reports. The Nats are off Monday, which means they'll be able to keep the rest of the rotation on normal rest if he needs a little more time for his finger to heal up. Max Scherzer would take the mound against the Phillies on Tuesday if Ross isn't ready, with Ross then likely slotted back into the rotation Saturday in St. Louis.
Apr 20 2016Ross was removed from Wednesday's game against the Marlins with a blister on his right middle finger, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.Ross tossed two scoreless innings in Wednesday's game before being taken out and replaced by Yusmeiro Petit. He was allowed to bat in the top of the third inning -- and scored on a Bryce Harper double -- so there is reason to believe the Nationals are just being cautions with their young starter. It remains to be seen if Ross will be ready for his next scheduled start Tuesday, but he will have an extra day of rest due to a team off day Monday.
Apr 20 2016Ross exited Wednesday's game against the Marlins after two innings with an apparent hand injury, Dan Kolko of MASN reports. It's not initially clear what type of setback Ross is dealing with, but the Nationals did let him hit in the top of the third inning before removing him from the game. Expect Ross' status to be updated when more details are released.
Apr 15 2016Ross tossed 7.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out five as the Nationals handed Philadelphia a 9-1 loss Friday night.Ross (2-0, 0.61 ERA) has provided the Nationals with a huge boost to start the season. He was around the plate throughout, throwing 107 pitches (71 for strikes) and was never seriously threatened as his mates scored early and often enroute to an easy win. He'll attempt to build on his strong start when he takes on Miami on the road in his next scheduled start.
Apr 10 2016Ross (1-0) held the Marlins to just one run on five hits and two walks over seven strong innings Sunday, striking out five, to pick up the win. Some poor weather delayed Ross' first start of the season, but he didn't let it phase him. There's been some early speculation that either he or Tanner Roark could lose their rotation spot if Lucas Giolito got off to a fast start in the minors this season, but if Ross keeps pitching like this he won't be going anywhere. His next start is schedule for Friday in Philadelphia.
Apr 9 2016Ross will have his scheduled start pushed back to Sunday in light of Saturday's game being postponed, William Ladson of MLB.com reports. The winter storm hitting Washington on Saturday led to Game 2 of the Nationals-Marlins series being rescheduled for a double-header in May. In terms of the rotation, manager Dusty Baker will simply push all of his starters back a day, meaning that Ross will make his first start of the season Sunday. On the other side, Tom Koehler will be on the bump for the Marlins on Sunday.
Apr 9 2016Ross' scheduled start Saturday was postponed due to inclement weather, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.Washington is experiencing a wintry mix of snow and sleet as of Saturday morning, and with a game scheduled for mid-afternoon, the Nationals and Marlins agreed to postpone their matchup. The Nationals have yet to announce whether they'll just push Ross' start back to Sunday or keep their rotation as is, with Max Scherzer taking the bump for the series finale.
Apr 1 2016Ross will open the season on the 25-man roster, Dan Kolko of MASN reports.Even though the Nationals don't plan to use their fifth starter right away, they'll still keep both Ross and Tanner Roark on the roster and use them out of the bullpen to start. The first opportunity for Ross to start a game will come on April 13, the day the Nationals will need to use a fifth starter.
Mar 28 2016Ross (foot) could have his first turn in the rotation skipped so Max Scherzer can pitch on his normal rest, The Washington Post reports.Nats manager Dusty Baker hasn't made an official decision yet, but given that Ross hasn't pitched in a Grapefruit League game since being hit on the heel by a comebacker March 20, he may need a bit of extra time to prepare for the regular season anyway.
Mar 21 2016Ross (foot) is on track to make his next spring start, MASN's Mark Zuckerman reports.Ross' status was left in question when he was struck on the foot by a line drive Sunday, but manager Dusty Baker confirmed Monday that Ross is only dealing with a minor setback. His preparation for the regular season should not be affected as long as he can take the ball next time he is scheduled.
Mar 20 2016Ross suffered a right heel contusion in Sunday's spring game and will be reevaluated Monday, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.Ross was asked about his injury following his early exit and seemed optimistic, so there is plenty of reason to believe his foot is not too badly bruised. The Nationals figure to release an update on his status after he is checked out Monday.
Mar 18 2016Bronson Arroyo's torn rotator cuff ensures that Ross will begin the season in the Nationals' rotation, The Washington Post reports.Arroyo was a long shot anyway, but his injury removes what little competition Ross and Tanner Roark had for the final two spots in the Nats' rotation. Ross has fought his control a little through the early part of spring training, posting an 8:4 K:BB ratio in 8.2 innings along with a 3.12 ERA and 1.85 WHIP, but after a strong rookie campaign which included a 2.47 BB/9 ratio, big things are expected from Ross in 2016.
Mar 8 2016Ross has started incorporating a split-finger pitch that he learned from Jonathan Papelbon into his arsenal, the Washington Post reports.Papelbon, in turned, learned the pitch from Curt Schilling, so it has a pretty good pedigree. Ross struggled at times with his changeup as a rookie, so using a splitter would give him another off-speed option and might be a better pitch for him in time, given that his large hands make the grip on the pitch easier for him. Ross is currently penciled into the back of the Nationals' Opening Day rotation.
Dec 1 2015Ross is one of the top internal candidates to fill the two openings in the Nats' rotation in 2016, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.Ross and Tanner Roark would replace Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister in the rotation as things stand, although GM Mike Rizzo could still bring in another starter through trade or free agency, and a big spring from a prospect like Lucas Giolito could create a job battle. Ross had a successful major league debut last year, posting a 2.80 ERA and 47:4 K:BB ratio through his first seven big league starts (45 innings) before fading late.
Sep 8 2015Ross has been moved to the bullpen, William Ladson of MLB.com reports. There was talk that the Nats could shut down Ross entirely after his outing Sunday, but the team will put him in the bullpen and have him available occasionally down the stretch. The workload is the big concern with Ross, as he's reached 149.2 frames already between the minors and majors this season after maxing out at 121.2 a year ago, and his performance has fallen off considerably as the innings have added up. Tanner Roark will step into the rotation for Washington.
Sep 7 2015Ross could be shut down for the season, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports.Ross struggled once again on Sunday, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks in 4.1 innings against the Braves. Fatigue seemed to set in during the game as his fastball lost velocity throughout the contest and his innings count (149.2 innings after Sunday) has Nationals manager Matt Williams concerned, "Again, we have to understand where he's at. The territory he's in. What options we have going forward." While it's unclear what rotational changes the Nationals may have in store, we should know more information as Ross approaches his next scheduled start against the Marlins this weekend.
Sep 1 2015Ross allowed three runs on just one hit but six walks in 2.2 innings in a no decision Tuesday against the Cardinals. He struck out three.Ross had trouble gripping the ball according to manager Matt Williams, who said Ross wasn't dealing with any injuries. Ross had walked just 11 batters in 11 previous starts and hadn't ever walked more than four in a single start. Heavy humidity was reported in St. Louis, so it's likely this was just an aberration for Ross.
Aug 27 2015Ross (5-5) evened his record with six dominant innings against the Padres on Thursday, striking out seven while allowing just an unearned run on one hit and two walks. The young phenom missed facing his brother Tyson by one day, but still filled his old organization with regret by putting together another terrific outing. After struggling through a couple West Coast starts earlier this month, he's put together a pair of sharp games in a row, giving up just one earned run on seven hits in 13 innings over that span. The 22-year-old will take the mound next against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Aug 23 2015Ross won his fourth game of the season Saturday, allowing just one run on six hits over seven innings while striking out four and walking none.Other than a solo shot off the bat of Khris Davis, Ross was in control all night and he rebounded nicely from a couple of rough starts. He'll look for win no. 5 on Friday at home against the Marlins.
Aug 11 2015Ross took his fourth loss Tuesday against the Dodgers, as he allowed five runs on six hits and four walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out one.Ross struggled in every facet Tuesday, as he gave up 10 fly balls and couldn't find his control. The floodgates finally burst thanks to Yasiel Puig extra-base hits in the fourth and fifth innings. Ross still has a shiny 3.44 ERA, and his run of five straight quality starts preceding this one (with a 36:4 K:BB in 34 innings) gives him some leeway for a rough start.
Aug 6 2015Ross (3-3) captured the win Thursday against the Diamondbacks after allowing only one run on five hits while striking out seven in six innings.Ross, who was first recalled from Double-A Harrisburg on June 6, delivered yet another strong performance, earning himself a spot on the rotation over the struggling 31-year-old Doug Fister, who will go to the bullpen. The 22-year-old pitched his sixth straight quality start and he'll look to make it seven in a row in his next scheduled start Tuesday at the Dodgers.
Aug 6 2015Ross will stay in the rotation when Stephen Strasburg returns Saturday, with Doug Fister instead moving to the bullpen, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports. You can't blame the Nationals for going with a guy who has a 2.80 ERA and 10-to-1 K/BB ratio over Fister, who has struggled all year with injuries and velocity concerns. Ross will try to continue what is becoming a breakout year for him, but the Nationals have considered an innings limit for him, per the Washington Post.
Aug 2 2015Ross took a no-decision Saturday despite a quality start, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over 6.1 innings while striking out six.If Lucas Duda had called in sick Saturday, Ross would have had a shutout as both runs he gave up came on solo shots by the Mets' first baseman. Ross will next toe the rubber Thursday, at home against the Diamondbacks, in what should be his last start before Stephen Strasburg comes off the DL.
Jul 31 2015Stephen Strasburg (oblique) is expected to make one more rehab start before coming off the DL, potentially making Ross' start Saturday his last one before returning to Triple-A.He's been impressive in his initial introduction to the major leagues, and Ross will probably rejoin the Nationals in September if another injury in the rotation doesn't require him sooner. With a 3.03 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and outstanding 34:3 K:BB ratio through his first five starts (32.7 innings), Ross is staking a strong claim to a spot in the Nats' 2016 rotation.
Jul 22 2015Ross took the loss Tuesday but supplied a quality start, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits over 6.1 innings, striking out four.He actually left the game in the seventh inning with a 2-1 lead and runners on second and third following a Clint Robinson error, but Aaron Barrett quickly allowed both runners to score after replacing Ross on the mound. His next start is scheduled for Sunday in Pittsburgh, and with Stephen Strasburg (oblique) not likely to begin a rehab assignment until next week, Ross will likely remain in the rotation for at least another couple of turns after that.
Jul 21 2015Ross was officially called up in advance of Tuesday's start against the Mets, MLB.com reports. The move is just a formality at this point, as the Nationals announced Monday that Ross would come up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Tuesday's contest. It will be his second major league stint of the season after he went 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA in three June starts.
Jul 20 2015Ross will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Tuesday's game against the Mets, MLB.com's William Ladson reports. After the Nationals used long man Tanner Roark out of the bullpen over the weekend, Ross will get another crack at filling the rotation spot of Stephen Strasburg, who is back on the DL with an oblique strain. Ross isn't expected to receive more than two or three starts until Strasburg returns, but even on a short-term basis, he's probably at least worth considering as a streaming option in shallow leagues or daily lineups. He was nothing short of stellar in his first three MLB outings back in June, posting a 23:2 K:BB ratio and 2.66 ERA (1.09 FIP) over 20.1 innings, with only four of the 19 hits he allowed going for extra bases.
Jun 23 2015Ross was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday.Stephen Strasburg (neck) is rejoining the rotation, forcing Ross back to the minors for his first stint at the Triple-A level. Ross was excellent in his three starts for the Nationals, and he was having a strong season at Double-A Harrisburg prior to his call-up. If one of the Nats' starters suffers an injury, Ross should be the first choice to join the rotation, although Tanner Roark is also a viable candidate.
Jun 20 2015Manager Matt Williams said Saturday that Ross will be out of a rotation spot when Stephen Strasburg (neck) returns from the DL, Dan Kolko of MASN Sports reports.Ross was brilliant across 7.1 innings Friday in a win over Pittsburgh, fanning 11 (12.5% SwStr%) and allowing just one run on six hits. Williams said Ross "seriously opened eyes" with the performance but added that the team won't go with a six-man rotation, so it seems likely the 22-year-old will head back down upon Strasburg's return. He figures to be atop the list of candidates if another injury strikes.
Jun 19 2015Ross was spectacular Friday night, allowing one run on six hits, walking one and striking out 11 over 7.1 innings of a 4-1 win against Pittsburgh.Ross (2-1, 2.66 ERA) is on a start-to-start schedule with Tanner Roark due to miss a few days on paternity leave, and Stephen Strasburg currently on a rehab assignment, but starts like this are going to make it difficult for the Nats to take him out of the rotation. Doug Fister is already back and Strasburg should be ready soon, so there simply may not be room for Ross, who could return to the minors for more seasoning.
Jun 18 2015Ross will remain in the rotation for at least one more start, taking the hill on Friday against the Pirates, the Washington Post reports.Doug Fister will start on Thursday, which was originally Ross' next scheduled turn, but rather than send the rookie back to the minors the Nats will keep him around for now. The reprieve may in part be due to the fact that Tanner Roark's may need to go on paternity leave this weekend, but Ross has pitched well enough on his own to deserve more starts. Both Ross and Roark will likely lose their spots when Stephen Strasburg (neck) comes off the DL, however.
Jun 15 2015Ross could hold onto a rotation spot beyond the return of Doug Fister (forearm) from the disabled list, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports.Ross has pitched well since being recalled from Double-A Harrisburg, allowing five runs on 13 hits and one walk over 13 innings. Either he or Tanner Roark will remain in the rotation, but the youngster appears to be the favorite. However, Stephen Strasburg (neck) doesn't appear too far off from a return either, so his run in the rotation may not last much longer anyway.
Jun 13 2015Ross picked up his first major league win Saturday, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over eight innings, striking out eight. It was a fantastic effort from the rookie, but with Doug Fister (forearm) close to returning from the DL, it might end up being Ross' final turn before heading back to the minors. Tanner Roark has been shaky recently though, and coming off a start this dominant, the Nats will likely give at least some thought to keeping Ross around.
Jun 6 2015Ross has been called up for his scheduled start Saturday against the Cubs, CSN Washington's Chase Hughes reports.A.J. Cole is headed back to the minors in the corresponding roster move. With Stephen Strasburg and Doug Fister on the disabled list, Ross may get more than one start if he pitches well as the Nats already have Tanner Roark slotted in as one of their other temporary starters. Ross has posted a 54:12 K:BB over 51.1 innings at Double-A Harrisburg (nine starts) this season.
Jun 6 2015Ross ran into trouble his second time through the Cubs' order Saturday, eventually allowing three runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out four.Nats manager Matt Williams didn't have Ross on a long leash in his major league debut, but he likely pitched well enough to earn at least one more start for Washington. If the club does keep him around, his next turn would come Friday on the road in Milwaukee.
Jun 5 2015Ross will be called up to make a start for the Nationals on Saturday, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reports.AJ Cole and Taylor Jordan have both stumbled in their spot starts, so Ross will be the next man up as the Nats try to plug the holes left by injuries to Doug Fister (forearm) and Stephen Strasburg (neck). The 22-year-old righty has a 2.81 ERA and 54:12 K:BB ratio in 51.1 innings for Double-A Harrisburg this season, and if he holds his own Ross could stick around for a couple of turns through the rotation.
May 27 2015Ross has a 3.05 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 44.1 innings at Double-A Harrisburg. The 22-year-old righty continues to face little resistance from hitters in the Eastern League. Prior to his last outing he had posted four straight starts of six-plus innings while allowing one run or less. He may not miss enough bats in the majors to be considered a No. 2 starter, but Ross has the stuff and the command to be a solid No. 3 starter for the Nationals in the not-so-distant future.
Dec 17 2014Ross has been traded to the Nationals through the three-team, 11-player deal involving Wil Myers, Jeff Passan reports. The hope of two brothers in the same rotation is now dead, with Joe headed off to Washington. Barring multiple injuries, Ross doesn't project to break the rotation in 2015, but will be a factor in 2016 if Jordan Zimmermann and Doug Fister reach free agency. Ross also sees a downgrade in future ballpark, going from pitcher heaven Petco to the more neutral Nationals Park. He will likely open next year in Double-A Harrisburg.
Jun 24 2013Ross has thrown 13.2 scoreless innings during his last two starts at Low-A Fort Wayne, allowing five hits and two walks to go with nine strikeouts. The stretch has improved an already impressive line to 3-2 with a 2.71 ERA and 51:19 K:BB ratio in 66.1 innings across 12 starts this season. The 20-year-old righty will more than likely be promoted to High-A Lake Elsinore by the end of 2013.
