Apr 2 2023Velasquez (0-1) took the loss Sunday in Cincinnati, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk across 4.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander threw 53 of his 86 pitches for strikes and was hurt by the long ball, as Jason Vosler and TJ Friedl each delivered solo homers. Velasquez kept the Pirates within striking distance, but the offense was unable to get him off the hook for the loss. The 30-year-old lines up to take the mound against the White Sox next weekend.
Mar 26 2023Velasquez allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven across five innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez has had an inconsistent exhibition season, and he ended Grapefruit League action with a 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. While the majority of those runs came in one outing, he also walked a troubling nine batters across 14 innings of work. Velasquez will start the season in the Pirates' rotation, but he's worked primarily out of the bullpen for the last few seasons and will likely return to that role at some point in 2023.
Mar 8 2023Velasquez allowed one hit and stuck out three while walking none across three scoreless innings Wednesday against the Orioles in Grapefruit League action. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez made his second appearance as a Pirate, and he's now allowed only one earned run across five innings. He did surrender two free passes in his opening start, but he showed improved control against the Orioles. Velasquez signed a one-year deal with Pittsburgh this offseason and is expected to open the campaign in the rotation.
Dec 13 2022Velasquez's signing of a one-year, $3.15 million contract with the Pirates was formally announced by the team Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez operated in a swingman role for the White Sox last season but will open 2023 in the Pirates' rotation. As far as his fantasy outlook for next season, Velasquez is likely best left to NL-only leagues.
Dec 6 2022Velasquez signed a one-year, $3.15 million deal with the Pirates on Tuesday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old righty stumbled to a 4.78 ERA as a swingman for the White Sox last season. He'll get to call one of the league's best pitchers' parks home in 2023, but the Pirates probably shouldn't expect a much better ERA, as Velasquez hasn't beaten that mark since all the way back in 2016. Those looking for signs of optimism could point to the fact that he managed a career-best 7.8 percent walk rate last season, but he also tied his career low with a 21.6 percent strikeout rate. His odds of securing a starting role may not become clear until the offseason is over, though the Pittsburgh rotation isn't exactly full of established arms.
Oct 5 2022Velasquez allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five over 3.1 innings in Wednesday's 10-1 loss to the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Starter Davis Martin was pulled from the game early due to biceps tightness after surrendering seven runs over 1.2 innings, and Velaszuez was called upon to relieve him. Velasquez allowed two inherited runners to score but settled in after that, allowing just one earned run over 3.1 innings. Over 75.1 innings working mostly out of the bullpen this season, Velasquez owned a 4.78 ERA with 69 strikeouts.
Sep 18 2022Velasquez allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four in four innings during Sunday's win over the Tigers. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although the White Sox planned for a bullpen game Sunday, Velazquez gave the team decent length by tossing 62 pitches (42 strikes) over four innings. However, he was forced to settle for the no-decision since most of the team's offensive production came after his departure. Over five appearances (one start) since the start of September, the right-hander has posted a 6.00 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in nine innings. Velazquez will likely head back to the bullpen following Sunday's outing.
Aug 15 2022Velasquez (finger) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez sustained a finger injury in early July but spent the last two weeks on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and posted a 4.76 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in 5.2 innings over four appearances. While he's worked as a starter and reliever in the majors this year, he'll pitch out of the bullpen now that he's healthy.
Aug 2 2022Velasquez (finger) is likely to return as a multi-inning reliever once he is activated from the injured list, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez has served as both a starter and reliever for the White Sox this season, though he was appearing out of the bullpen prior to suffering a finger injury. He is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte in the coming days and could be back quickly if he is only being asked to work a couple innings per appearance.
Aug 1 2022Velasquez (finger) is on the verge of beginning a rehab assignment, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez has missed nearly a month with his injury, but he is just about to enter the final stage of his recovery. It's unclear how many times Velasquez will throw in the minors before rejoining the big club, but he should do so at some point this month.
Jul 6 2022Velasquez was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a blister on his right index finger. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez's move to the IL will keep him on the shelf through the All-Star break, but he should be fully healed from the blister when the White Sox open their second-half schedule. Jimmy Lambert was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday to take Velasquez's spot in the bullpen.
Jun 16 2022Velasquez didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 13-0 romp over the Tigers, giving up only one hit over 2.2 scoreless innings. He struck out three without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was dominant the first time through the Detroit order, but that was about as far as Velasquez was allowed to go in his return from a groin injury that had sidelined him since May 24. Including the game against Boston in which he got hurt, he's tossed 5.2 scoreless, one-hit frames with an 8:1 K:BB over his last two appearances. However, Velasquez's 4.93 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 36:14 K:BB through 38.1 innings on the season are a better reflection of his reliability.
Jun 15 2022Velasquez (groin) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez hasn't pitched since May 24 due to his left groin strain, but he'll return to the mound to start Wednesday's series finale in Detroit. Over his five outings prior to his absence, the right-hander posted a 4.56 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 23.2 innings. Since Velasquez didn't head out on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated, he may not be capable of giving the White Sox extensive length Wednesday.
Jun 13 2022Velasquez (groin) is expected to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez has been sidelined since late May due to a left groin strain, but his injury was considered minor, and he'll rejoin the rotation following a relatively minimal stay on the injured list. The right-hander had mixed results prior to his absence, as he posted a 5.30 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 35.2 innings over eight appearances (seven starts) to begin the year.
Jun 4 2022Velasquez's groin injury appears to be minor, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Although Velasquez landed on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain Friday, it doesn't appear as though his injury is a significant concern. The right-hander played catch Friday and plans to throw a bullpen session in the coming days. It seems likely that Velasquez will be able to rejoin the White Sox following a relatively minimal IL stint, but it's not yet clear whether a rotation spot will be open since Lance Lynn (knee) is nearing a return.
Jun 3 2022Velasquez was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain Friday, retroactive to May 31. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was slated to start Friday's game against the Rays, but Davis Martin will step in as the starter after he was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. It's not yet clear how much time Velasquez will miss, but it's possible he'll take on a bullpen role once he returns to action since Lance Lynn (knee) is closing in on a return.
Jun 1 2022Velasquez will start Friday's game against the Rays in Tampa Bay, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez shifted to the bullpen last week after he turned in an unsightly 5.79 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in his first seven starts of the season, but the White Sox determined he was a better option at the back end of the rotation than Dallas Keuchel, who was recently designated for assignment and released. Lance Lynn (knee) initiated a rehab assignment last weekend and may only need a couple more starts in the minors before he's ready to return from the 60-day injured list and make his season debut, so Velasquez likely won't be in store for a long-term appointment in the rotation if the team's other four starters stay healthy over the next two weeks.
May 28 2022General manager Rick Hahn said Saturday that Velasquez could rejoin the rotation after Dallas Keuchel was designated for assignment, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez's first seven appearances of the season came as a starter, but he tossed three relief innings against the Red Sox on Tuesday. Even if the right-hander rejoins the rotation next week, he'll likely return to the bullpen once Lance Lynn (knee) returns from the injured list. Velasquez hasn't been particularly effective early in the season, as he's posted a 5.30 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in 35.2 innings over eight appearances (seven starts). Davis Martin is also in the mix to take Keuchel's spot in the rotation.
May 25 2022Velasquez allowed one walk and struck out five across three scoreless innings in Tuesday's loss to Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez made his first appearance out of the bullpen this season, and he delivered some needed length in the blowout loss. He struggled mightily as a starter earlier in the campaign, particularly in his two prior appearances when he allowed 11 earned runs across 10 innings. As a result, he has likely lost his grip on a consistent rotation spot, with Johnny Cueto taking over in his place. Even if Velasquez continues to make spot starts for the time being, he is almost certainly headed for a relief role once Lance Lynn (knee) is able to return.
May 19 2022Velasquez allowed four earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three across five innings Thursday against Kansas City. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez allowed at least one earned run in each of his first three innings, including a two-run home run to Hunter Dozier. He's been crushed for combined 11 earned runs across his last two starts -- spanning 10 innings. For the season, Velasquez has a 5.79 ERA with a 28:13 K:BB across 32.2 frames.
May 13 2022Velasquez (2-3) gave up seven runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez served up three home runs in the ugly outing, including a two-run blast by Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning. The veteran righty had lowered his ERA to 3.97 after allowing just one run in his previous two starts, but it jumped to 5.53 after Friday's game. He's sporting a 25:12 KBB through 27.2 innings on the year. Velasquez is expected to start in Kansas City next week.
May 11 2022Velasquez and the White Sox won't play against the Guardians on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests within Cleveland's organization, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez was slated to make his sixth start of the season Wednesday. The White Sox will likely take increased precautions to make sure their players and staff aren't dealing with COVID-19 cases after playing two games against the Guardians, but it seems likely that Chicago will be able to play its upcoming series against the Yankees. As a result of the postponement, Velasquez is now scheduled to make his next start Friday against the Yankees, per Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com.
May 6 2022Velasquez (2-2) gave up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out two in five innings Friday against the Red Sox. He picked up the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He didn't miss many bats in this one, but Velasquez cut his season ERA to 3.97 and still has a respectable 21 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Lance Lynn (knee) is still at least a couple weeks away from returning, so Velasquez's spot in the rotation should be secure in the short term. He tentatively lines up to face Cleveland next week.
Apr 30 2022Velasquez tossed 5.2 scoreless innings and picked up the win in Saturday's victory over the Angels. He allowed four hits and posted a 6:0 K:BB in the game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez was knocked around a bit in his last couple starts, but he was on top of his game Saturday, and he likely would have been out there longer had he not been removed following a lengthy rain delay.
Apr 24 2022Velasquez (0-2) took the loss Saturday, giving up five runs on eight hits and a walk over 3.1 innings as the White Sox were downed 9-2 by the Twins. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Half of the hits off Velasquez went for extra bases, including homers in the fourth inning by Ryan Jeffers and Byron Buxton that chased the right-hander from the game. While Velasquez does have a decent 22.0 percent strikeout rate through three starts, his 6.75 ERA is well-earned thanks to an 11.9 percent walk rate and 2.25 HR/9. Lucas Giolito (abdomen) is due back Sunday, but Velasquez's stint in the rotation may not be over quite yet with Lance Lynn (knee) still out for another month or more.
Apr 17 2022Velasquez (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in 4.2 innings while striking out five in a 9-3 loss Sunday against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In the four-run first inning, Velasquez walked in two runs and made an error that allowed another run to score. However, the righty calmed down and at one point retired ten straight batters. The 29-year-old has six walks over 8.2 innings this season after setting a career-high with 4.7 walks per nine innings in 2021. His next scheduled start is Friday in Minnesota.
Apr 12 2022Velasquez allowed one run on two hits and three walks over four innings during Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Mariners. He had two strikeouts and didn't qualify for the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was targeting four innings for his White Sox debut Tuesday, and he covered exactly that with only 62 pitches. Velasquez surrendered a solo homer to Eugenio Suarez during the second inning but otherwise held down Seattle, though he did have some control issues with three walks. It's a strong start to the season for the right-hander, and he should remain a part of Chicago's starting rotation for the foreseeable future with Lance Lynn (knee) and Lucas Giolito (abdomen) on the injured list.
Apr 9 2022Velasquez will start Tuesday's home opener against the Mariners, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez joined the White Sox in mid-March and will begin the regular season as part of the starting rotation. He made 25 appearances (21 starts) between the Phillies and Padres last year and posted a 6.30 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 94.1 innings.
Mar 13 2022Velasquez agreed to a contract with the White Sox on Sunday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The specific terms of the deal remain unclear, though James Fegan of The Athletic reports it's a major-league contract. Velasquez had the worst season of his big-league career between the Phillies and Padres in 2021, as he had a 6.30 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 101:49 K:BB over 94.1 innings. The veteran right-hander may have a tough time cracking the White Sox's starting rotation to open the season, and he's more likely to serve as a depth and bullpen option.
Sep 30 2021Velasquez (3-9) took the loss during Thursday's 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All four runs Velasquez surrendered came on solo homers in two back-to-back sets, a pair in the first inning and another two in the fourth. The 29-year-old has always shown strikeout upside -- he had seven Thursday -- but has now permitted multiple runs in each of his four appearances with San Diego that total only 12.2 innings.
Sep 23 2021Velasquez (3-8) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out two over an inning's work as he took the loss against the Giants and Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez loaded the bases after three of the first four batters he faced reached and then surrendered a bases-clearing double to Kris Bryant to give the Giants an early 3-0 advantage. He would retire the next two batters to conclude the frame, ending his day at 37 pitches. The Padres will likely have to continue using Velasquez in an opener role with so many of their rotation arms injured. The 29-year-old owns a 6.23 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 91:46 K:BB over 86.2 innings.
Sep 17 2021Velasquez (3-7) suffered the loss against St. Louis on Friday, allowing four runs on four hits and no walks while striking out four over four innings Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran hurler was called up to the big club earlier Friday after signing with San Diego on Wednesday. He gave up three runs -- including two on a Tyler O'Neill home run -- in his first inning of work and served up a solo shot to Dylan Carlson in the fourth. There was some rust to be expected as Velasquez's start was his first in the majors since July 30, but it was nonetheless a disappointing debut given San Diego's slipping grasp on a playoff spot. Velasquez figures to get another start with Blake Snell (groin) currently on the injured list, and he's lined up to face San Francisco at home next week.
Sep 15 2021Velasquez (finger) signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Wednesday and is expected to pitch during the three-game set against the Cardinals this weekend, which begins Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old was cut loose by the Phillies on Tuesday after being designated for assignment over the weekend, and the injury-plagued Padres will bring him aboard and quickly insert him into the starting rotation. The team hasn't announced which game Velasquez is slated to pitch. but he could slot into the rotation Friday after Blake Snell (groin), the previously scheduled starter, was placed on the injured list. Velasquez landed on the injured list with Philadelphia due to a right middle finger blister in early August, but he made six rehab appearances in the minors before parting ways with the organization and appears to currently be healthy.
Sep 14 2021Velasquez (finger) was released by the Phillies on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez was designated for assignment by Philadelphia over the weekend, and he's now been let go by the organization. The 29-year-old posted a 5.95 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 85:45 K:BB over 81.2 innings this season before landing on the injured list in early August with a right middle finger blister.
Sep 11 2021Velasquez (finger) was designated for assignment Saturday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez has never quite lived up to expectations with the Phillies. He was working his way back from a finger injury, but will now go through the waiver process.
Aug 16 2021Velasquez (finger) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment at Low-A Clearwater on Tuesday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez, who has been on the injured list since Aug. 2 due to a blister on his right middle finger, was cleared to head out on the rehab assignment after he threw a live bullpen session Sunday without discomfort. Even though the back end of the rotation remains unsettled while Zach Eflin (kneecap) remains on the IL, the Phillies aren't expect to revisit using Velasquez in a starting role upon his return.
Aug 2 2021Velasquez was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger blister Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez had given up 11 runs in 4.1 innings across his last two starts, and his blister may have contributed to his struggles. Once he's cleared to return, manager Joe Girardi said this weekend that Velasquez will move to the bullpen, while Chase Anderson will claim a spot in the rotation.
Aug 1 2021Phillies manager Joe Girardi said Saturday that Velasquez will move to the bullpen, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Chase Anderson will join the rotation as a replacement for Velasquez, who was pummeled for five runs over two innings in Friday's loss to Pittsburgh. Though he has a pair of shutout appearances among his last six starts, Velasquez has been blasted in each of the other four outings, giving up 24 runs in 12 innings among those starts. Velasquez will likely work mostly in mop-up spots out of the bullpen, but he could earn more high-leverage opportunities if he excels in his initial relief appearances.
Jul 31 2021Velasquez (3-6) allowed five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out one in two innings to take the loss against the Pirates on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez recorded his shortest outing since May 21, as he was removed from Friday's game after he gave up three runs in the first inning and two in the second. The right-hander has now been charged with four losses in his last five starts dating back to the start of July, and he's posted a 12.23 ERA and 2.21 WHIP in 17.2 innings during that time. He'll attempt to get back on track in his next start, and he tentatively lines up to take the mound on the road against Washington on Wednesday.
Jul 29 2021Velasquez will start Friday against the Pirates, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez was originally expected to start the second half of Thursday's doubleheader against the Nationals. While he was removed from that assignment, he hasn't been removed from the rotation entirely but will simply start one day later than previously scheduled.
Jul 24 2021Velasquez (3-5) was tagged with the loss Saturday against Atlanta after allowing six runs on five hits and two walks while fanning three across 2.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez couldn't even get out of the third inning and this one will go down as one of his worst starts of the campaign by a wide margin. It was the second time over his last three outings that he couldn't escape the third inning, and in fact, he has now given up five or more runs in three of his last four contests.
Jul 17 2021Velasquez pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four in a no-decision versus Miami on Saturday. The contest was suspended due to rain in the 10th inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez pitched well enough to win, but Ranger Suarez blew the save in the ninth inning by allowing a two-run home run to Jesus Aguilar. Despite the positive outing Saturday, Velasquez hasn't shown much consistency on the mound lately. He has a 5.00 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 81:42 K:BB across 77.1 innings. The 29-year-old lines up for a home start versus Atlanta during next weekend's four-game series.
Jul 9 2021Velasquez (3-4) took the loss Friday versus Boston. He allowed eight runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two in 2.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was tagged for three home runs that accounted for half of the hits he allowed. Velasquez has allowed multiple homers in just five of his 18 appearances (14 starts), but two of those instances have been in his last two starts. The 29-year-old has a 5.35 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 77:40 K:BB across 72.1 innings. He'll likely make his next start in next weekend's four-game series versus Miami after the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2021Velasquez (3-3) allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out four in six innings to take the loss against the Padres on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez struggled against the long ball early in Sunday's start, as he gave up home runs to Manny Machado in the first and third innings. While the right-hander settled down across the last three innings of his outing, he was still charged with his third loss of the season. Velasquez had held the Marlins scoreless in his last start, but he's now allowed at least two earned runs in six of his last seven appearances. During that time, he's posted a 6.21 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 33.1 innings. The 29-year-old will attempt to bounce back in his next outing, and he tentatively lines up to start on the road against Boston on Friday.
Jun 29 2021Velasquez (3-2) earned the win Tuesday after holding the Marlins scoreless across seven frames. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After lasting less than six innings in each of his last five starts, Velasquez turned in his longest outing of the season against Miami. The right-hander displayed brilliant command without issuing any free passes while collecting a season-high tying seven punchouts. It's been somewhat of a rough campaign for Velasquez to the tune of a 4.22 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. The 29-year-old will look to remain in the win column during his next projected start at home Sunday against San Diego.
Jun 23 2021Velasquez allowed four runs on three hits and two walks in 4.1 innings, striking out five and not factoring into the decision of Wednesday's 13-12 loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Short outings have become a recurring theme for Velasquez, who has lasted five innings just once in his last five starts and now has a 4.74 ERA this season. The righty isn't expected to be great near the back of Philadelphia's rotation, but his role may be in jeopardy if he continues this run of poor pitching. Velasquez is expected to make his next start Tuesday against the Marlins.
Jun 19 2021Velasquez (2-2) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Giants after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks across four innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez wasn't sharp with his deliveries and tossed only 45 of his 84 pitches for strikes while also finishing with more walks than strikeouts for the first time this year. The right-hander owns a 4.44 ERA but seems to be trending in the wrong direction, as he has allowed at least three runs in three of his last four outings. He's slated to take the ball next week against the Mets on the road.
Jun 12 2021Velasquez allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while punching out five across five innings during Saturday's 8-7 win over the Yankees. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez allowed both of his runs in the second inning, yielding a solo homer to Gary Sanchez and an RBI triple to Brett Gardner. The right-hander appeared to be in line for a win as he exited with a 6-2 lead after five innings, but the Phillies bullpen stumbled late to ultimately give him a no-decision. Velasquez, who has yet to pitch into the seventh inning this season, will take a 4.25 ERA into his start against the Giants next weekend.
Jun 6 2021Velasquez allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four in four innings during Sunday's win over the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez was roughed up in his last start and gave up six runs in three innings, but he was slightly more effective in Sunday's outing. However, he was forced to settle for a no-decision in his four-inning appearance. The right-hander has now posted a 4.33 ERA and 52:26 K:BB in 43.2 innings this year. He tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Yankees on Sunday.
May 31 2021Velasquez (2-1) took the loss in Monday's 11-1 rout at the hands of the Reds, coughing up six runs on five hits and three walks over three innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Homers by Max Schrock and Kyle Farmer highlighted the Cincy barrage as Velasquez got tagged with his first loss of the year. The right-hander exited after 65 pitches (40 strikes), and he'll take a 4.08 ERA and 48:25 K:BB through 39.2 innings into his next start.
May 25 2021Velasquez (finger) (2-0) earned the win Tuesday at Miami after giving up three hits and three walks while recording five strikeouts over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old was scratched from Thursday's start against the Marlins due to numbness in his right index finger, but he was back on the mound Tuesday and delivered his best start of the season. Velasquez has a 2.95 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 45:22 K:BB over 36.2 innings this season.
May 20 2021Velasquez was scratched from his scheduled start against the Marlins on Thursday due to a numb right index finger, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez suffered his injury while warming up ahead of Thursday's game, and he'll be unable to make his scheduled start against Miami. David Hale will start Thursday's game in his place, and the Phillies could lean heavily on their bullpen against the Marlins.
May 14 2021Velasquez allowed a run on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings versus Toronto on Friday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez only allowed a solo home run to Vladimir Guerrero in the sixth, but the Phillies' offense didn't score while he was on the mound. The 28-year-old Velasquez has allowed just one run in each of his last three starts, but he has just one win in that span. The right-hander sports a 3.68 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 37:19 K:BB across 29.1 innings. He is tentatively scheduled for a home start versus Miami next week.
May 8 2021Velasquez went 5.1 innings in Saturday's 8-7 loss against Atlanta, allowing one run on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The one blemish on Velasquez otherwise perfect night was a Freddie Freeman home run to lead off the top of the sixth. The outing makes two straight going at least five innings with only one run allowed and he probably earned another turn through the rotation with the performance.
May 4 2021Velasquez will remain in the rotation for at least one more start Saturday against Atlanta, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez carried a 6.57 ERA and 1.95 WHIP into his start Monday against Milwaukee, walking 18.3 percent of opposing batters. He wound up pitching a gem against the Brewers, striking out six and walking two over six innings while allowing just a single run on four hits. It's hard to trust the righty given his performances for most of the season (and for most of his career), but another strong start or two could make him at least somewhat interesting again.
May 3 2021Velasquez (1-0) earned the win after allowing one run on four hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings Monday against Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez surrendered a solo home run to the second batter of the contest, but he managed to settle down and turn in a quality outing. It's unclear if the right-hander will receive another turn through the rotation, but he did nearly all he could to earn another look, even with Matt Moore back from the COVID-19 injured list. Velasquez owns a 4.91 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 24 punchouts over 18.1 innings.
May 2 2021Velasquez will start Monday's game versus the Brewers, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old will receive another turn through the starting rotation while Matt Moore is eased back into action as a reliever following his stint on the COVID-19 injured list. Velasquez has surrendered five runs on 10 hits with a 9:3 K:BB over 8.1 innings across two starts, so he may need a strong performance Monday to have a chance of earning a longer look in the rotation.
Apr 28 2021Velasquez allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five across 4.1 innings Wednesday against the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez surrendered two home runs, which accounted for all three of his charged runs. However, he showed some positive signs otherwise by racking up five strikeouts on 12 called strikes and seven swinging strikes. Velasquez figures to return to the bullpen as Matt Moore (COVID-19) should be prepared to return to the rotation the next turn through.
Apr 27 2021Velasquez is in line to make a second straight turn through the rotation Wednesday against the Cardinals, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez started in place of Matt Moore (COVID-19 health and safety protocols) on Friday in Colorado, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings in a no-decision. Though Moore was activated from the IL on Monday, the Phillies plan to let the lefty get reconditioned while working out of the bullpen over the next several days before reinserting him into the rotation. It's conceivable that Moore may be called upon to piggyback Velasquez once the latter exits his start Wednesday.
Apr 23 2021Velasquez did not factor in the decision Friday against the Rockies. He pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez got the opportunity to start with Matt Moore currently on the COVID-19 injured list. The right-hander fared decently well given the venue, allowing only a pair of runs -- each on solo homers -- and striking out four across four frames. Velasquez has now struck out 13 batters in eight innings this season, though he has also issued nine walks. He's likely to return to the bullpen when Moore rejoins the rotation.
Apr 19 2021Velasquez is preparing to start Friday against the Rockies, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez lost out on an Opening Day rotation spot but remained on the roster in a swingman role. With Matt Moore landing on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, Velasquez lines up as his temporary replacement. He unlikely to be a particularly appealing fantasy option in Coors Field, however. He's struck out an impressive nine batters in four innings of work this season but has also walked eight and given up four earned runs.
Mar 28 2021President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said Saturday that Velasquez (oblique) is on track to begin the season as a member of the Phillies' bullpen, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game since March 9 due to an oblique injury, which effectively took him out of the running for a spot in the rotation. The injury apparently won't disqualify Velasquez from making the Opening Day roster as a reliever, provided he's able to face hitters without issue before camp ends. The Phillies could revisit the idea of using Velasquez as as starter once the oblique injury is further in the rear-view mirror and if he has some time to get fully stretched out.
Mar 19 2021Velasquez is dealing with an oblique injury, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's not clear exactly what the issue or is when he'll be able to return. Velasquez had been looking like an underdog to open the year in the rotation, though Zach Eflin and Spencer Howard are both dealing with back issues, which could have given him at least a temporary opening. If all three pitchers need to miss time, non-roster invitee Ivan Nova could make a spot start or two to open the year.
Mar 11 2021Velasquez is at real risk of losing not just his rotation spot but his roster spot as well, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez has continually failed to deliver on his potential, posting an ERA of 4.85 or worse in each of the last four seasons. The ERA estimators have been a bit kinder to him, with both xFIP and SIERA giving him a mark of 4.75 or better in each of those campaigns, but he may simply be someone who consistently underperforms those metrics. The Phillies brought in veterans Matt Moore and Chase Anderson on big-league deals this offseason, and the plan appears to be for them to start. Velasquez's career 4.78 ERA as a reliever is a near match for his 4.72 mark as a starter, so the Phillies could elect to give his roster spot to someone else if he can't win a rotation role.
Jan 15 2021Velasquez signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Phillies on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Now heading into his seventh big-league season, Velasquez continues to fail to take the next step, but he's remained just useful enough for the Phillies to keep him around at a fairly low price. His 5.56 ERA in 34 innings last season was a career high, though his 4.16 FIP and 4.07 xFIP painted a much more optimistic picture, as did his career-high 29.9 percent strikeout rate.
Sep 26 2020Velasquez allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six over 4.1 innings in Friday's loss to the Rays. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez held the Rays to one run over the first four innings, but he struggled early in the fourth inning prior to his removal. The right-hander finishes the abbreviated regular season with a 5.56 ERA and 1.56 WHIP, both of which are career-worst marks.
Sep 19 2020Velasquez (1-1) earned the win Saturday against the Blue Jays after giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander surrendered a solo homer to Travis Shaw during the fifth inning, but he otherwise kept Toronto off the board. Velasquez has a 5.46 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB through 29.2 innings, and he may have made his final start of the regular season.
Sep 14 2020Velasquez (0-1) took the loss to the Marlins on Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk across 3.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez earned himself the start after striking out nine in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Sept. 8. He wasn't nearly as sharp Monday, however. He did not allow a baserunner in the first, but gave up a run in the second, two in the third and one more in the fourth. The rough outing brought his ERA up to 6.46 on the season. It's unclear if Velasquez will stick in the rotation going forward, but if he does, he'll likely take the ball Saturday against Toronto.
Sep 13 2020Velasquez is slated to start Monday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies had a doubleheader on tap Sunday in Miami, but rather than tabbing Velasquez for one of the starts, manager Joe Girardi opted to go with a bullpen game in the first contest before having Zach Eflin take the hill in the nightcap. With Zack Wheeler (finger) not expected to be ready to start again until later this week, the Phillies will still have a spot available in the rotation for Velasquez on Monday. Assuming Velasquez acquits himself well in the outing, the right-hander could pick up a second start later in the week against the Blue Jays, as the Phillies will have another opening in the rotation following Spencer Howard's (shoulder) placement on the injured list.
Sep 8 2020Velasquez didn't factor into the decision during a 5-2 loss to the Red Sox in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out a season-high nine without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was electric in his fourth start of the season, tossing 64 of 90 pitches for strikes and pitching well enough to earn his first win of 2020. Unfortunately for Velasquez, he exited with the score tied 2-2 before the Phillies' bullpen unraveled once again. With the team headed to Miami on Thursday to play seven games in five days against the Marlins, Velasquez should get another start in Sunday's twin bill, but his 5.85 ERA and 1.60 WHIP suggest he'll be a risky fantasy option despite a 29:11 K:BB through 20 innings.
Aug 25 2020Velasquez has officially been moved to the bullpen going forward, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies will use him as a long reliever for now, essentially until they have need of a sixth starter again. He has logged fewer than five innings in three of his four appearances and a sports a 7.62 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB in 13 innings this season.
Aug 20 2020Velasquez allowed four earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings in the second game of the Phillies' doubleheader Thursday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez allowed two home runs that accounted for three of the four runs against him. However, he was sharp in between, punching out a season-high seven batters while also turning in his longest outing of the campaign. Velasquez has made three of his four appearances this season as a starter, though without doubleheaders and the need for an extra starter, he will likely be relegated to bulk-inning reliever role for the time being.
Aug 19 2020Velasquez is starting Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Spencer Howard will get the ball for Game 1 while Velasquez starts the second half of Thursday's twin bill. The right-hander has made three appearances (two starts) for the Phillies this season, allowing seven runs across eight innings while posting an 11:6 K:BB.
Aug 13 2020Velasquez allowed two runs on two hits and one walk in one inning pitched during Thursday's loss to the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez was considered an option to start Friday's game against the Mets but that nod appears to be going to Spencer Howard after Velasquez entered Thursday's game in the eighth inning. The right-hander was able to strike out the lone batter he faced in the sixth inning, but he gave up a two-run double to Jose Iglesias in the seventh. It's unclear how the Phillies plan on using Velasquez in the coming days, although he remains a candidate to start one of the games during the doubleheader against the Blue Jays on Aug. 20.
Aug 10 2020Velasquez and Spencer Howard are both preparing to start Friday's game against the Mets, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Both pitchers are in line to start Friday after each starting one half of Sunday's doubleheader against Atlanta. The Phillies appear to be leaning towards Velasquez getting the nod, though a piggyback role appears possible. The Phillies will need a six-man rotation at times down the stretch, as they're expected to play quite a few doubleheaders to make up for their lost week of games early in the season. Piggybacking the pair would keep both pitchers stretched out.
Aug 9 2020Velasquez allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six over four innings in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Braves. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez had a rough outing his first time around this year, but he turned things around in the first game of Sunday's twin bill. He gave up a baserunner to begin the fifth inning prior to his removal, but the bullpen couldn't limit production during the rest of the frame en route to a 5-2 loss. However, Velasquez escaped with a no-decision. The right-hander will attempt to build on his momentum at home Friday against the Mets.
Aug 7 2020Velasquez will start one of the two games during Sunday's doubleheader after Friday's game was rained out, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Jake Arrieta lined up to start Saturday, Velasquez's start will be pushed back two days as a result of Friday's postponement. It's unclear whether he'll start the first or second game Sunday. The starter for the other game in the doubleheader hasn't officially been named, but top pitching prospect Spencer Howard could line up to make his major-league debut.
Aug 3 2020Velasquez is tentatively slated to start Friday's game against the Braves, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies will reorder their rotation after taking the past week off due to COVID-19-related concerns following their season-opening series with the Marlins. As a result, Velasquez lines up to start the first game of the Phillies' homestand Friday, assuming no postponements before the weekend result in other starting pitchers getting pushed back. After the Marlins tagged him for four runs over three innings in his season debut July 26, Velasquez may need a bounce-back outing Friday just to maintain his spot in the rotation. Top pitching prospect Spencer Howard is waiting in the wings at the Phillies' alternate training site and should get a look in the big-league rotation at some point in 2020.
Jul 26 2020Velasquez allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across three innings Sunday against the Marlins. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez cruised through the first inning, striking out the final two batters he faced. However, he ran into trouble quickly in the second frame, during which he allowed two home runs that accounted for all of his earned runs. Velasquez claimed the fifth spot in the rotation with a strong summer camp, but his role could be in jeopardy with Spencer Howard nearing a call-up to the big-league club.
Jul 22 2020Velasquez will start Sunday's series finale against the Marlins, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old had yet to be confirmed as a member of the Phillies' starting rotation, but he'll take the mound in the final game of the opening series. Velasquez has been up-and-down over the past few seasons and posted a 4.91 ERA and 1.39 WHIP last season, but he's performed well in summer camp and may benefit from the change in the team's pitching coach this offseason.
Jul 15 2020Velasquez looked quite good in an intrasquad game Tuesday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez threw four innings, striking out six while allowing just two hits and a single walk in his second impressive outing of summer camp. The Phillies haven't officially named him their fifth starter, but it seems as though he has the edge for the role, with manager Joe Girardi saying, "I don't think you can ignore what he's doing." Velasquez has continually failed to deliver on his promise in four seasons with the Phillies, struggling to a 4.91 ERA last season, but a change in pitching coach could help improve his numbers this season, as the previous regime emphasized throwing up in the zone in a way that didn't seem to suit him well.
Mar 25 2020Velasquez's odds of securing a rotation spot to open the season could take a hit if the schedule is shortened, as that could allow the Phillies to promote top pitching prospect Spencer Howard as the fifth starter at the beginning of the campaign, Scott Lauber reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez hadn't secured the fifth starter job before play was paused, as Nick Pivetta and Ranger Suarez were still in an open competition with him. Howard has only made six starts at the Double-A level, but his 34.8 percent strikeout rate, 0.83 WHIP and 2.03 ERA in 15 total minor-league starts last season demonstrate his formidable talent. That could condemn Velasquez to a long-relief role, though he'd likely be one of the first few options called upon should a starter get injured.
Sep 27 2019Velasquez allowed four runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts across four innings during a no-decision against the Marlins on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He didn't pitch long enough to qualify for a victory, but it didn't matter Friday because the Marlins and Phillies needed 15 innings to settle this affair. Velasquez had limited value down the stretch because he didn't pitch past the fifth frame after Aug. 5, but he did yield under three earned runs in four of his last six starts this year. He ends the season 7-8 with a 4.91 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 130 strikeouts in 117.1 innings.
Sep 22 2019Velasquez (7-8) took the loss against the Indians on Sunday, completing 4.2 innings and giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez gave up a single run through his first four innings but was done in by poor defense and a game-changing long ball in the fifth. The frame opened with a pair of errors -- one of which was committed by Velasquez himself -- and was blown open when Oscar Mercado homered to drive in three runs and break a 1-1 tie. The home run was the 25th Velasquez has surrendered in 113.1 frames this season, and his 1.99 HR/9 ranks eighth-worst in the league among pitchers with 100 or more innings. He'll carry a 4.76 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 127:43 K:BB into his final start of the season, a home matchup against the Marlins on Friday.
Sep 17 2019Velasquez (5-5) allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight across five innings to earn the win Tuesday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez began the game on a rocky note, allowing both of his earned runs to cross the plate in the first frame. However, he allowed just three baserunners across his next four innings of work to tame the Braves' bats. While this outing showed plenty of potential, Velasquez has worked a minimum of five innings in just two of his last five starts. However, he'll have the chance to replicate his success in his next effort, currently scheduled for Sunday at Cleveland.
Sep 13 2019Velasquez is listed as the Phillies' probable starter for Tuesday's series opener in Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies are using Friday's off day to reshuffle the rotation, with manager Gabe Kapler electing to move ace Aaron Nola and No. 2 starter Jason Vargas ahead of Velasquez in the pitching schedule to keep them on their normal four days' rest. The adjustment means that Velasquez will miss out on a start this week, as he hasn't pitched since giving up four runs in 4.1 innings Sept. 8 versus the Mets. After another day off Monday, the Phillies will finish out the regular season with a stretch of 14 games in 13 days, with Velasquez tentatively lining up for three starts during that span.
Sep 8 2019Velasquez gave up four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five through 4.1 innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Velasquez gave up three runs off two home runs in the first inning, he settled down but could just not get the walks under control. Velasquez continued his string of short starts, not making it more than six innings in any of his last six appearances. The 27-year-old has a 4.95 ERA with 113 strikeouts through 20 starts this season.
Sep 3 2019Velasquez didn't factor in the decision in Tuesday's win at Cincinnati after giving up one run on four hits across three innings. He struck out five and walked two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Velasquez allowed only the single run, but he needed 67 pitches to work through the three innings, so manager Gabe Kapler decided to take advantage of the extra arms in the bullpen. The 27-year-old has a 4.80 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 108:37 K:BB over 99.1 innings and lines up to face the Mets on Sunday, but he could continue to see a shorter lease thanks to September's expanded roster.
Aug 28 2019Velasquez (6-7) allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts across five innings to earn a victory against the Pirates on Wednesday.
Aug 23 2019Velasquez allowed seven runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.1 innings Friday night against the Marlins. He didn't factor into the decision.
Aug 16 2019Velasquez (5-7) secured the win after giving up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 5.1 innings Friday against the Padres.
Aug 11 2019Velasquez (4-7) took the loss Saturday against the Giants after giving up three runs on three hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked one.

Jul 22 2018Velasquez (6-8) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven across seven scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against the Padres.Velasquez had his start pushed back a day due to rain, but he showed no ill effects as he needed only 87 pitches to complete his longest outing of the season. He threw 58 strikes -- 16 of which came on whiffs -- and started 15 of the 24 batters he faced with a strike. Velasquez has now put together 13 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and only two walks across his last two starts.
Jul 21 2018Velasquez's scheduled Saturday start was rained out.The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday, which means Velasquez will likely start one half of the twin bill. The Phillies have no off days next week, which will likely result in Velasquez's next start being pushed back from Thursday to Friday, but it will still come against the Reds, so the overall fantasy impact of the cancellation will be minimal.
Jul 11 2018Velasquez didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-0 extra-inning loss to the Mets, scattering two hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out three. The right-hander didn't allow a runner past first base as he dueled Jacob deGrom to a standstill for six innings. Velasquez now has nine quality starts on the season, and he'll take a 4.39 ERA and 110:35 K:BB through 94.1 innings into the All-Star break.
Jul 11 2018Velasquez (forearm) was activated from the 10-day disabled list prior to Wednesday's start against the Mets.As expected, Velasquez will return to the fold after missing one start due to a right forearm contusion he suffered versus Washington on June 30 when a comebacker struck his arm. Across 17 starts this year, Velasquez has posted a 4.69 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 107:34 K:BB over 88.1 innings.
Jul 9 2018Velasquez (forearm) is expected to start Wednesday against the Mets, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Velasquez hit the disabled list after taking a liner off his right forearm in his previous start. He'll wind up missing just one start, barring setbacks.
Jul 1 2018Velasquez (forearm) was placed on the 10-day DL on Sunday.Velasquez was struck with a comebacker in Saturday's matchup, and was ultimately diagnosed with a right forearm contusion after X-rays came back negative. The right-hander will miss at least one start as a result, but should be back to take the mound one more time prior to the All-Star break.
Jun 30 2018X-rays performed on Velasquez's right arm were negative, and he'll be re-evaluated Sunday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Montemurro reported on the initial diagnosis of a right forearm contusion after a line drive struck Velasquez's pitching arm during his Saturday start, and the test confirmed the relatively good news. Velasquez still may miss at least one start, but his fantasy shareholders can breathe a sigh of relief for the moment that he avoided more serious damage.
Jun 30 2018Velasquez was diagnosed with a right forearm contusion after getting hit by a line drive off the bat of Adam Eaton in Saturday's game against the National, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Velasquez was forced to leave the game, but not before making an impressive play to throw out Eaton with his left arm. It's good news that the injury isn't being described as a fracture, though it's certainly possible that Velasquez could be forced to miss a few starts if the contusion is bad enough. The seriousness of the issue should become clear in the coming days.
Jun 30 2018Velasquez left his Saturday start against the Nationals after being hit on his right (pitching) arm by a line drive, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports. The right-hander made an impressive throw with his left arm to retire Adam Eaton at first base after the comebacker struck him, but his day is over after logging two innings, striking out three and giving up one run on three hits and a walk. Victor Arano is set to take his spot on the mound. Expect the Phillies to provide an update on Velasquez in the postgame news conference or sometime Sunday.
Jun 26 2018Velasquez (5-8) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks across six innings Monday to take the loss against the Yankees. He struck out seven.Velasquez did well to keep pace with a dangerous lineup, with his two biggest mistakes coming on an RBI double by Gleyber Torres in the second inning and a solo home run from Aaron Judge in the fifth. Though he threw 67 percent of his pitches for strikes, he struggled to put hitters away at times and tied his season high in walks. Velasquez has experienced mixed results over five June outings, posting three quality starts but allowing 14 unearned runs across 10 innings in his other two. His consistent 10.8 K/9 still endows him with fantasy upside and he'll look to build on a solid effort this weekend against the Nationals.
Jun 19 2018Velasquez did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals, allowing four runs on four hits across 6.1 innings. He issued three walks and struck out eight.Velasquez recorded the first out in the seventh inning with only two runs allowed, but then gave up a single and hit a batter en route to being pulled. Tommy Hunter entered the game and allowed both runners to score before giving up two runs of his own, turning a 4-2 lead into a 6-4 deficit. The 26-year-old Velasquez now has a 4.82 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with a 97:29 K:BB over 80.1 innings this season.
Jun 14 2018Velasquez (5-7) logged 6.2 innings while earning the win Thursday, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out six Rockies. The right-hander turned in a promising rebound effort after his 10-run disaster Friday. He stifled the Colorado lineup in this home outing, recording 13 swinging strikes (a fine 21.3 percent clip) and not allowing a base knock until a two-out, RBI double from Trevor Story in the seventh inning. The inconsistent but often dominant Velasquez will look to continue this showing in his next scheduled outing against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
Jun 8 2018Velasquez (4-7) allowed 10 runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four across 3.2 innings as he took the loss during Friday's matchup against Milwaukee.Velasquez's 13th start didn't last long, as he gave up three runs in the first inning, followed by five more in the fourth. After a disastrous outing, his ERA rose from 3.82 to 4.95. He's accrued a 1.38 WHIP with an 83:24 K:BB over 67.1 innings this season. Prior to Friday's outing, he hadn't allowed more than three runs in any of his past six starts.
Jun 2 2018Velasquez (4-6) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out nine over 6.1 innings in a loss to the Giants on Saturday. It was another strong effort from Velasquez, but he was outdueled by Andrew Suarez on the other side and was stuck with the loss. Velasquez hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since April 29, and he currently ranks sixth in the National League in strikeouts with 79 (16th in MLB). The ratios are still just decent, but Velasquez seems to have turned a corner and looks like a viable option in all formats. He gets the Brewers at home his next time out.
May 28 2018Velasquez allowed two runs on three hits and two walks across 5.2 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Dodgers. He struck out six.Velasquez was outstanding in the early going, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He ran into trouble at that point, however, allowing two runs on three hits before his removal. He was still in contention for a win, but the bullpen collapsed later on to lose the lead. All in all it was a solid outing for Velasquez, who's now allowed three runs or fewer in five straight starts. He'll take a respectable 4.08 ERA into his next scheduled start this weekend against the Giants.
May 22 2018Velasquez (4-5) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out nine across 4.1 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Braves.Velasquez needed 89 pitches and faced 22 batters to record only 13 outs Tuesday. He frequently fell behind batters, starting only nine of the 22 batters he faced with a strike. While he avoided major damage thanks to 19 swinging strikes, he was forced to expend a lot of energy and work up his pitch count in the process. This isn't a new issue for Velasquez, as it was third start in his past six outings in which he has failed to complete five innings of work. He ranks eighth in the National League in strikeouts with 64, but he'll have to work deeper into outings to reach his apparent upside.
May 17 2018Velasquez (4-4) allowed five hits while walking two and striking out five across 6.1 scoreless innings to record the win Thursday against the Cardinals. For the first time in five starts, Velasquez did not a allow a home run, helping him to his longest start since April 13. He worked very efficiently through five innings allowing only four baserunners on four singles before tiring down the stretch to allow three baserunners across his last 1.1 innings of work. Though his season long numbers aren't all that impressive on the surface, Velasquez has been impressive of late working quality starts in each of his past two outings while walking just three batters in that span.
May 10 2018Velasquez (3-4) picked up the win Thursday against the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out 12 batters across six innings.Velasquez struggled early on in this one, serving up two homers in the first two innings to put the Phillies behind 3-0. He flipped a switch after the second long ball, however, retiring 15 of the next 17 batters he faced -- 11 via strikeout -- before exiting with his fourth quality start of the season. Velasquez's 12 strikeouts, which were the most he's recorded since he turned heads with a 16-strikeout game in 2016, offer a glimpse of what he's capable of doing when pitching well, but his struggles with keeping the ball in the park (1.8 HR/9) make him tough to trust. He'll look to keep things rolling in his next start, which will come on the road against the Orioles.
May 5 2018Velasquez (2-4) picked up the win over the Nationals on Saturday, allowing one run on one hit and four walks over five innings while striking out four. The right-hander threw 59 of 92 pitches for strikes, but he was able to pitch from ahead consistently, firing 17 first-pitch strikes to the 21 batters he faced. Velasquez has failed to go longer than five innings in any of his last three starts, and he'll take a 5.14 ERA into his next outing Thursday at home against the Giants.
Apr 29 2018Velasquez (1-4) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings in Sunday's loss to the Braves.Velasquez served up a leadoff homer to Ozzie Albies and allowed the Braves to tack on five more runs in third, punctuated by a three-run home run off the bat of Johan Camargo. The 25-year-old has posted quality starts in three of his six outings this year but has allowed a total of 14 earned runs in his three non-quality appearances. Velasquez has good stuff but is still too inconsistent to be relied upon as a weekly fantasy starter. He draws a difficult matchup against the Nationals in his upcoming start on Saturday.
Apr 25 2018Velasquez (1-3) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks across 4.2 innings while suffering the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. He struck out six.Velasquez cruised into the third inning, when a pair of solo home runs got the visitors on the board. He then loaded the bases in the fifth before allowing a two-run double to David Peralta. Velasquez pounded the strike zone at a 67 percent clip, but he simply failed to keep opposing hitters off balance and became predictable as the game wore on. He'd tossed three consecutive quality starts prior to this one, but he'll take an underwhelming 4.50 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into Sunday's scheduled start against the Braves.
Apr 19 2018Velasquez (1-2) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six innings but still took the loss Wednesday to Atlanta.Since a 2.2-inning stinker against this same Atlanta lineup on Opening Day, Velasquez has been on fire, as he has fired three straight quality starts with a 20:3 K:BB. Unfortunately, the Phillies have only been able to deliver the support for one win on those three starts, and that may wind up becoming a theme for Velasquez as 2018 continues.
Apr 13 2018Velasquez got a no-decision against Tampa Bay on Friday, scattering four hits over 6.2 innings, giving up just one earned run, while recording seven strikeouts and walking one. After he gave up four runs and lasted just 2.2 innings in his first start of the season against the Braves, Velasquez has bounced back with back-to-back sharp outings that have seen him give up just two earned runs, strike out 13 and walk two in 12.2 innings. Velasquez can be a frustrating case, as he's shown flashes like this current stretch before that make him seem like he's on his way to being a consistent fantasy option. He could still work his way into becoming one if he can build off this strong pair of starts, but the 4.48 ERA he's posted in his career suggests that he's a streaming option for the time being.
Apr 7 2018Velasquez allowed one earned run on four hits while walking one and striking out six across six innings Saturday against the Marlins. After being being buoyed to a 5-1 lead after the first inning, Velasquez was able to pound the strike zone Saturday. The results were good as he struck out six batters and walked only one. His line from this game has to be discounted a bit given the weak Marlins' lineup and the excellent run support he received, but it provides another glimpse into the upside that he flashed in 2016. He remains a high-risk option but this start should solidify his spot in the rotation, giving him time to prove himself as a potential fantasy asset.
Mar 31 2018Velasquez (0-1) gave up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and two walks in 2.2 innings during the Phillies' 15-2 loss Saturday to the Braves. He struck out four. The 13.5 K/9 did little to make up for the rest of the damage in the short outing. Velasquez did log 47 strikes on 69 pitches, but Atlanta did plenty when its bats connected. It was an uninspiring start to a critical season for Velasquez, whose 2017 season was cut short due to surgery on his right middle finger last year. Velasquez remains an intriguing talent with a big ceiling for strikeouts, and the Phillies seem intent on giving him some leash to prove he belongs in the rotation. However, if he struggles to quiet doubts over his health and his ability to pitch deep into games, he could find himself in a relief role as the season moves along.
Mar 26 2018Velasquez is scheduled to start the Phillies' third game of the season Saturday against the Braves, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The right-hander will take the hill for the final time this spring Monday against the Pirates, likely surpassing the 50-pitch mark after having topped out at 28 pitches in his last Grapefruit League outing March 16. Velasquez's 2017 season was cut short after he required surgery to address a vascular issue in his right middle finger, but he has experienced no complications at any point this spring.
Feb 28 2018Velasquez (finger) will start Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.Velasquez is coming off surgery in early September that addressed a circulation problem in his hand. He is at full health as the 2018 season comes into focus and should cement his role as a middle of the rotation starter this spring. Over 15 starts with the club last year, the right-hander posted a 5.13 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 72 innings.
Sep 8 2017Velasquez had surgery Tuesday to address a circulation problem in his hand, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Velasquez is out for the season, but will be ready for spring training. The 25-year-old disappointed in 2017, going 2-7 with a 5.13 ERA and a 68:34 K:BB in 72 innings over 15 starts.
Sep 1 2017Velasquez has decided to proceed with surgery to address the blood flow issue that has caused numbness in his right middle finger, CSN Philadelphia reports.Velasquez sought a second opinion Tuesday with another doctor in Dallas and presumably was given the same advice he had received from his first doctor. A timetable for the procedure has not yet been determined, but it should happen soon to give Velasquez plenty of recovery time prior to next season. He said he will be ready for spring training.
Apr 14 2016Velasquez (2-0) was filthy in Thursday's win over the Padres, tossing a complete game shutout with three hits allowed. He struck out a career-high 16 batters and did not issue a walk.Velasquez extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings with his first shutout in nine career starts. The 23-year-old right-hander, acquired in the trade that sent former closer Ken Giles to Houston, had nine strikeouts in six innings in a 1-0 win against the Mets last Saturday. If Velasquez hasn't already been picked from the wire, now may be your last chance to claim him.
Apr 10 2016Velasquez picked up a win Saturday with six scoreless innings against the Mets. He allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked three.Velasquez got off to a rough start with a 26-pitch first inning, but then settled down after that. The wins may be hard to come by with a low scoring offense behind him, but Velasquez will still provide plenty of value this season thanks to his strikeout ability.
Apr 3 2016Velasquez will make his first start of the season Saturday against the Mets, Ryan Lawrence of The Philly Voice reports.Velasquez won the fifth spot in the Phillies' rotation with a strong performance this spring. He was 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA and a 58:21 K:BB ratio in 55.2 innings with the Astros last season. He may struggle to earn wins with a poor offense behind him, but Velasquez could be a solid contributor in fantasy leagues if he starts to realize his upside this season.
Mar 28 2016Velasquez threw six scoreless innings Monday in a spring training matchup against Toronto, giving up two hits, three walks, while striking out eight. The 23-year-old righty continues to make strides this spring training as he's logged increased innings in four consecutive starts now. He's pitched at least five innings in his past two starts and given up less than three hits while striking out at least seven in each. This spring, he's compiled an impressive 2.25 ERA while recording 24 strikeouts in 20 innings of work. He's slated as the Philadelphia's fifth starter entering the 2016 regular season.
Mar 28 2016The Phillies announced Monday that Velasquez will open the season as the fifth starter, CSN Philadelphia reports.Velasquez and his primary competitor, Adam Morgan, both threw the ball well this spring, but manager Pete Mackanin decided to give Velasquez an immediate chance to show what he can do with the team that acquired him over the offseason. Velasquez got his feet wet in the big leagues last season with the Astros and showed some potential in the strikeout category, punching out 58 batters over 55.2 innings.
Mar 18 2016Velasquez allowed one run on three hits over five innings Thursday against Tampa Bay. He struck out seven and walked one.Velasquez has given up five runs on 13 hits this spring with a 16:4 K:BB ratio in 14 innings. He is in a tight battle with Brett Oberholtzer and Adam Morgan for the final spot in the Phillies' rotation.
Mar 3 2016Velasquez allowed three runs on three hits in two innings of work Wednesday. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.Velasquez, acquired in the Ken Giles deal this offseason, is considered the early favorite to fill the final spot in the Phillies' rotation. He hit 96 mph on the radar Wednesday and was already using all of his pitches, according to CSN Philadelphia. His primary competition for the fifth spot includes Brett Oberholtzer, Adam Morgan and David Buchanan.
Jan 21 2016Velasquez will enter camp as the favorite to win the fifth spot in the Phillies' rotation, the team's official site reports.Velasquez came over to the Phillies as the centerpiece of the Ken Giles trade. He was 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA and a 58:21 K:BB ratio in 55.2 innings with the Astros last season. He will compete with Brett Oberholtzer, Adam Morgan, David Buchanan, Alec Asher and Severino Gonzalez this spring.
Dec 9 2015Velasquez was traded to the Phillies on Wednesday as part of a package for Ken Giles, Mark Berman of Fox 26 Houston reports.Velasquez fell off most prospect lists after appearing in 19 games for the Astros last season, but he entered 2015 as a Top 100 prospect, and is the centerpiece of the group of players headed to Philadelphia. Velasquez has a good chance to earn a spot in the Phillies' rotation during spring training, but if he does not, he could still break camp with the big club as a reliever.
Aug 20 2015Velasquez was recalled from Double-A Corpus Christi on Thursday.Velasquez will return to the Astros after spending nearly three weeks at Double-A since being optioned on August 1. The right-hander will be active and available out of the pen for Thursday night's game. In a corresponding move, Houston optioned Josh Fields to Double-A.
Aug 1 2015Velasquez was optioned to Double-A Corpus Christi on Sunday.Velasquez only made one appearance out of the pen after he was bumped from the rotation with the addition of Scott Kazmir and with the acquisition of Brewers starter Mike Fiers, the 23-year-old became expendable. However, Velasquez could be in line for a September call-up --- after a rocky start to his major league career, the righty allowed just 11 runs in his last four starts on the mound.
Jul 23 2015Velasquez has been moved to the bullpen, the Houston Chronicle reports. The acquisition of Scott Kazmir from Oakland has left Velasquez as the odd man out of the Astros' rotation, at least for now. Manager A.J. Hinch suggested the team will evaluate Velasquez's role at a later date, saying, "We're going to play it by ear. He can help us win here in any role, whether it's in the rotation of out of the pen." Velasquez, 23, has posted a 4.03 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 38:14 K:BB in 38 innings with the big club so far this season.
Jul 21 2015Velasquez earned his first MLB win Tuesday over Boston, as he allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings and struck out seven without a walk. After showing shaky control in his first three starts, Velasquez has settled down. Tuesday marked his first major league start without a walk and he has issued just four free passes in his last four starts, covering 25 innings (1.4 BB/9). Three of those four starts have been of the quality variety and there's plenty to like for Velasquez going forward, as he lowered his ERA to 4.03 and now has 38 strikeouts in as many innings.
Jul 21 2015Velasquez was called up from Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday, CSN Houston's Howard Chen reports. The Astros designated Joe Thatcher for assignment to clear out a roster spot for Velasquez, who will start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox. The Astros are interested in trading for a starter, but such a move would probably threaten Scott Feldman more than Velasquez, as the rookie has a 3.94 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB ratio through 32 innings (six starts).
Jul 19 2015Velasquez will be called up from Double-A Corpus Christi to start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle reports.Since being demoted to Double-A a little less than two weeks ago, Velasquez has been staying fresh by resting and taking part in some side sessions. Manager A.J. Hinch appears confident that the time off will prove effective for Velasquez, who showed some promise in his six starts with the Astros. Though the 3.94 ERA and 1.31 WHIP that Velasquez provided in those turns are middle-of-the-road numbers, his 8.9 swinging-strike percentage portends well for future success.
Jul 7 2015Velasquez was optioned to Double-A following Tuesday's start as an innings saving measure, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.Velasquez will not make any starts with the Corpus Christi Hooks, he is simply being removed from the 25-man roster temporarily, essentially skipping his turn in the rotation. While it is not clear when he will rejoin the Astros after the All-Star break, it seems like an inevitability considering how well he has pitched lately. Velasquez gave up two runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts Tuesday against the Indians but received zero run support and took his first loss of the season. Brett Oberholtzer will take Velasquez's spot in the rotation for now and will start Thursday while Lance McCullers will have his start pushed back to Sunday.
Jul 1 2015Velasquez yielded five hits, one walk, and four runs with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings but did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Royals.Velasquez has failed to record a decision in any of the first five starts of his career to tie an MLB record set by three others, the last time coming in 1997 by Chris Brock. The rookie righty retired 13 in a row at one point, and he'll look to get rewarded with a win in his next scheduled start Tuesday at Cleveland.
Jun 27 2015Velasquez went 6.1 innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two.It was by far the best outing of Velasquez's young career, as he issued just one free pass and worked more than five innings for the first time with the big club. He was in line for his first win, having tossed six shutout innings to start the game, but reliever Will Harris gave up a home run to the very first batter he faced (Chris Young) and allowed two inherited runs to score. Velasquez will look to build on this strong performance Wednesday against Kansas City.
Jun 21 2015Velasquez labored through 3.1 innings Sunday against Seattle, allowing one run on two hits and four walks while striking out five.He was pulled in the fourth inning after throwing 93 pitches, 43 of which were tossed in the first inning alone. The Mariners sent seven batters to the plate in the first, but the rookie escaped allowing only one run. In his three career starts, Velasquez has yet to make it into the sixth inning and he's walked 10 in 13 frames, but the 23-year-old figures to get at least a few more chances in the rotation to improve upon his numbers.
Jun 16 2015Velasquez struck out seven and walked two while giving up five runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings against the Rockies in his second big league start Tuesday.A three-run second was followed by more damage in the fifth, and Velasquez had already thrown 102 pitches with just 14 outs recorded. He'll make the second start of his pair for the current week on the road against the Mariners in the pitcher-friendly confines of Safeco Field on Sunday.
Jun 11 2015Velasquez made his major league debut, pitching three-hit ball for five scoreless innings against the White Sox on Wednesday. He struck out five and walked four in a no-decision.Velasquez was recalled from Double-A Corpus Christi, where he was 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA while striking out 37 in 26.1 innings over five starts. He's replaced Roberto Hernandez in the rotation and has earned himself a second start. He'll take the mound again Tuesday against the Rockies.
Jun 10 2015Velasquez was officially recalled from Double-A Corpus Christi on Wednesday.Velasquez has been supremely effective at Double-A Corpus Christi this season, posting a 1.37 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 37 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. He'll receive the start Wednesday against the White Sox, and a good start could lead to another outing as the Astros await the return of Brad Peacock (ribs) from the disabled list.
Jun 8 2015Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed Velasquez will come up from Double-A Corpus Christi to start Wednesday's game against the White Sox.As expected, the highly touted prospect will make his debut after going 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA in five starts at Double-A. Velasquez will meet up with the team in Chicago on Tuesday, with a corresponding roster move expected to come Wednesday afternoon.
Jun 8 2015Velasquez will be called up Monday and is expected to start Wednesday's game against the White Sox, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.Velasquez, who went 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA in five starts with Double-A Corpus Christi, will be the latest prominent Astros prospect to join the big club. His next step beyond Wednesday's start is uncertain, but Roberto Hernandez has been told he is moving to the bullpen, so it seems likely that Velasquez will be part of the big league rotation for the time being.
May 23 2015Velasquez might be the next Astros pitching prospect to be called up from the minor leagues, the Houston Chronicle's Jose de Jesus Ortiz reports. The hard-throwing righty has a 1.88 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 20 strikeouts over 14.1 innings at Double-A Corpus Christi this year. While Lance McCullers got the call first because he had slightly more experience at Double-A, Velasquez is the better pitching prospect from a fantasy perspective, as he's a no-doubt starting pitcher, and there are some who believe McCullers eventually ends up in the bullpen. Velasquez features a big fastball and a plus changeup with a curveball that could develop into a third plus pitch.
Mar 9 2015Velasquez (back) could be cleared to throw soon pending the results of an MRI that he's scheduled to undergo later this week, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports.Velasquez suffered a strained lat muscle in the Arizona Fall League, but it sounds like he's making progress in his recovery. Given his injury history, the Astros will likely work him back slowly before considering him for any Grapefruit League games.
Feb 21 2015Velasquez (back) will not throw for "at least a couple weeks," The Houston Chronicle reports.Velasquez is still on the mend after suffering a lat strain in the Arizona Fall League. Injuries have been an issue throughout Velasquez's young career, but he is still listed on the Astros 40-man roster.
Nov 21 2014Velasquez was added to the Astros' 40-man roster.Velasquez appeared in 15 games for High-A Lancaster in 2014, striking out 72 in 55.1 innings and posting a 3.74 ERA. The 22-year-old will head back to the minors once the 2015 season begins, but the Astros added him to the 40-man roster so that they couldn't lose him to the Rule 5 draft.
