Aug 6 2022Herrera was released by the Phillies on Saturday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two sides effectively parted ways earlier in the week when the Phillies designated Herrera for assignment as part of their trade deadline roster shuffle. Herrera is now free to explore his opportunities elsewhere. Given his struggles this season (.238/.279/.378), he will presumably have to settle for a minor-league contract.
Aug 2 2022The Phillies designated Herrera for assignment Tuesday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera had already lost hold of his everyday role in center field in late June, and he'll now be moved off the 40-man roster entirely with the Phillies having bolstered their outfield Tuesday with the acquisition of Brandon Marsh from the Angels. The 30-year-old didn't have much value to the Phillies as a lefty-hitting outfielder on the bench, but another organization could deem worthy of a flier off the waiver wire. Herrera has produced a lowly .657 OPS in 197 plate appearances in 2022 but is one year removed from delivering a more palatable .260/.310/.416 slash line while adding 13 home runs and six stolen bases in 124 games.
Jul 27 2022Herrera went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored Wednesday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has shifted to a fourth outfielder role with the Phillies, though he hit ninth and started in center field on Wednesday. He now has five home runs and six stolen bases across 186 plate appearances for the season, so he could provide decent production if he can find a consistent path to playing time.
Jul 10 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cardinals are bringing a right-handed starting pitcher (Andre Pallante) to the hill for the second straight day, but the lefty-hitting Herrera will still find himself on the bench. The righty-hitting Matt Vierling, who had previously occupied the short side of a platoon in center field, will draw his second straight start and appears to have supplanted Herrera as the top option at the position. Dating back to June 16, Herrera has delivered a dismal .146/.196/.146 batting line.
Jul 9 2022Herrera isn't starting Saturday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has gone 1-for-6 with a walk and two strikeouts over his last three games and will take a seat for the third time in the last five matchups. Matt Vierling is starting in center field and batting eighth.
Jul 7 2022Herrera isn't starting Thursday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games after he went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts over his last two matchups. Mickey Moniak is starting in center field and batting ninth.
Jul 5 2022Herrera isn't starting Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera, having gone 4-for-9 with two runs scored in two games to begin the month, sits while Mickey Moniak plays center field.
Jul 3 2022Herrera will start in center field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera had seen his playing time take a hit of late, but he'll be rewarded with a second straight start after going 3-for-5 with two runs in Saturday's 7-6 loss. Though Herrera and Mickey Moniak hold the platoon advantage over the righty-hitting Matt Vierling, the Phillies could be tempted to give Vierling a look as a full-time player in the outfield, given the lack of recent production from the two left-handed hitters. Before the three-hit effort, Herrera went 2-for-33 over his previous 10 games.
Jul 1 2022Herrera is not starting Friday's contest versus the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will be on the bench for the third straight game. The team may just be trying to give him some extra time to get right before he returns to the lineup as he has been very cold from the plate recently. Mickey Moniak is starting in center field and will bat ninth is Friday's series opener.
Jun 30 2022Herrera is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against Atlanta, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will sit for a second straight game after he went 2-for-33 over his prior nine games. Matt Vierling will take over in center field and bat ninth Thursday.
Jun 29 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Even with a right-hander (Kyle Wright) on the mound for Atlanta, the lefty-hitting Herrera finds himself on the bench in the midst of his ongoing offensive slide. Dating back to June 16, Herrera has gone 2-for-33 at the plate, which has dropped his season average to .230. Mickey Moniak will get a look in center field as interim manager Rob Thomson looks to see if he can offer an upgrade over the slumping Herrera.
Jun 26 2022Herrera went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera singled, stole second and scored in the second inning to get the Phillies on the board. Prior to Sunday, Herrera had gone 1-for-25 (.040) across his previous seven contests, a skid that started to cost him playing time. The veteran outfielder is slashing .236/.274/.412 with five home runs, 17 RBI, 18 runs scored and four steals through 48 contests. Despite his struggles, Herrera could see his playing time stabilize with Bryce Harper (thumb) on the injured list for likely a few weeks. Matt Vierling figures to push for a starting role as well and could poach some at-bats from Herrera versus left-handed pitchers.
Jun 25 2022Herrera isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against San Diego, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is out of the lineup for the third time in the last five games since left-hander Blake Snell is on the mound for the Padres. Matt Vierling is starting in center field and batting eighth.
Jun 24 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Friday's game at San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is 1-for-25 over his past seven games and will take a seat with southpaw MacKenzie Gore pitching for the Padres. Matt Vierling will man center field Friday for the Phillies.
Jun 21 2022Herrera will be on the bench against lefty Martin Perez and the Rangers on Tuesday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has now sat against four of the last five lefties the Phillies have faced. Matt Vierling will get the start in center field.
Jun 16 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With the Phillies facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Patrick Corbin) for the second time in three days, the lefty-hitting Herrera finds himself on the bench once again. Platoon mate Matt Vierling will get the nod in center field, but Herrera profiles as the primary option at the position for Philadelphia following the recent demotion of rookie Mickey Moniak to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Jun 14 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera appears set to take over as the Phillies' primary center fielder after Mickey Moniak was demoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, but Herrera is still likely be part of a platoon at the position with Matt Vierling. With southpaw Trevor Rogers on the hill for Miami, the lefty-hitting Herrera will head to the bench.
Jun 13 2022Herrera will start in left field and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Marlins, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he'll be filling in Monday for a resting Nick Castellanos, Herrera could be encroaching on Mickey Moniak's role as the Phillies' top center fielder. Since being activated from the 10-day injured list May 30 and making his season debut, Moniak is hitting .143/.250/.143 and may be better served playing regularly at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Herrera, meanwhile, has produced a .912 OPS over that same timeframe.
May 31 2022Herrera will sit for the second straight game Tuesday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Mickey Moniak returned from a hand injury for his season debut Monday and has started in center field for two straight games, which seemingly indicates Herrera no longer has a starting spot. Herrera's .270/.298/.494 line is good for a career-best 117 wRC+, but that comes with career worsts in both strikeout rate (25.5 percent) and walk rate (4.3 percent), so it may not be particularly sustainable.
May 30 2022Herrera will sit Monday against the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has seven hits in his last five games, dragging his wRC+ up from 95 to 117. Whether or not that's enough to retain some portion of a starting role in center field and hold off Mickey Moniak, who returned from a hand injury to start in center field Monday, is not yet clear.
May 29 2022Herrera went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Saturday's 8-2 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The hitless night followed a relatively productive three-game stretch for Herrera, who had gone 6-for-11 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and two runs over that stretch. He'll be back in the lineup as the Phillies' No. 8 hitter for Sunday's series finale, but his status atop the depth chart in center field could be in jeopardy once Mickey Moniak (hand) is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.
May 24 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game in Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Atlanta is bringing a lefty (Max Fried) to the hill for the second day in a row, so the lefty-hitting Herrera will once again cede duties in center field to the switch-hitting Roman Quinn. Herrera could soon be at risk of losing out on starts against right-handed pitching, too; he's produced a lowly .472 OPS since the beginning of May, and fellow lefty-hitting center fielder Mickey Moniak (hand) is in the midst of a rehab assignment and could take over as the primary option at the position once he's activated from the 10-day injured list.
May 23 2022Herrera isn't starting Monday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will get a day off after he hit .130 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base, a walk and seven strikeouts while starting in the last seven games. Roman Quinn will take over in center field and bat ninth.
May 22 2022Herrera went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Getting the start in center field and hitting seventh, Herrera swiped his first bag of the year but otherwise didn't make much of an impact. The veteran outfielder is slashing a paltry .200/.231/.260 through 16 games in May, and could soon face a challenge for his role from Mickey Moniak (hand).
May 14 2022Herrera will sit Saturday against the Dodgers, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera hasn't started against a single southpaw all season, a trend which will continue here against lefty Julio Urias. Roman Quinn will start in center field.
May 12 2022Herrera isn't starting Thursday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games since left-hander Tyler Anderson is on the mound for the Dodgers. Roman Quinn will take over in center field and bat ninth.
May 10 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game at Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will take a seat for the second time in the past three games with left-hander Robbie Ray pitching for the Mariners. Matt Vierling will start in center field and bat ninth.
May 8 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Mets, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera made his second straight start in center field in the Phillies' 3-2 win in Game 1 of the twin bill, going hitless with two strikeouts over four at-bats. He'll get a breather for the nightcap, enabling Roman Quinn to get a look in center field.
May 5 2022Herrera (illness) is starting in center field and batting eighth Thursday against the Mets, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was scratched from Tuesday's starting lineup due to allergies and also sat out Wednesday (though he did pinch hit in both games), but he'll retake the field for the series opener versus New York. The 30-year-old is off to a hot start with a .292/.308/.750 slash line through 10 games this season.
May 4 2022Herrera (illness) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was held out of the lineup for Tuesday's 6-4 loss after he experienced an allergic reaction shortly before game time, but he was able to make a pinch-hitting appearance off the bench. The lefty-hitting Herrera will remain in a reserve role Wednesday, but that's likely a result of a southpaw (Martin Perez) being on the mound. Expect Herrera to check back into the starting nine in Thursday's series opener with the Mets, when the Phillies face off against right-hander Taijuan Walker.
May 3 2022Herrera was scratched from the lineup Tuesday against the Rangers due to a flareup of his allergies, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was penciled in to start Tuesday, but the allergy issues forced a late lineup change. He should be considered day-to-day until the team provides another update. Matt Vierling entered the lineup in his place for the Phillies.
Apr 30 2022Herrera went 2-for-2 with two doubles, a walk and an RBI during a 4-1 victory against the Mets on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was Philadelphia's best hitter Saturday as he walked in the third inning and doubled in the sixth and seventh, knocking in a run on the latter. He's excelled since returning from injury, slashing .389/.400/1.000 with six of his seven hits going for extra bases in seven games.
Apr 26 2022Herrera went 2-for-4 with a homer, double, three RBI and two runs scored in a 10-3 win Tuesday over Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In the fourth, Herrera had a RBI double and later came across to score. Two innings later, he hit a two-run blast off Jhoulys Chacin. After missing the first 13 games of the season with an oblique injury, Herrera has hit well in his three starts with two multi-hit games and three extra-base hits. He's hit ninth and played center field in each of his starts.
Apr 25 2022Herrera remains on the bench Monday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera returned from an oblique strain Friday and appears to be in a straightforward platoon with Matt Vierling in center field. Herrera got the nod against righties Friday and Saturday, but Vierling has since made a pair of starts against left-handers, including Monday's starter Kyle Freeland.
Apr 24 2022Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After missing the start of the season with an oblique injury, Herrera returned from the injured list Friday and started in the first two games of the series with Milwaukee, going 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored between those contests. The lefty-hitting Herrera will bow out of the lineup Sunday against southpaw Eric Lauer, but he's still expected to hold down the large side of a platoon in center field with Matt Vierling now that he's healthy again.
Apr 22 2022Herrera (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera dealt with a right oblique strain since early in camp, but he recently completed a rehab assignment in which he hit .281 with three doubles, four runs and three RBI in eight games. He'll likely serve in the strong side of a platoon in center field early on while Matt Vierling sees playing time against left-handed pitchers, but Herrera should have a chance to carve out an everyday role if he performs well.
Apr 19 2022Herrera (oblique) moved to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to continue his rehab assignment Tuesday, Tom Housenick of The Morning Call reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has been out since early in camp while battling a strained right oblique. He has seven hits in five rehab games thus far and may not need many more games before being activated. Primary center fielder Matt Vierling has hit .130/.192/.174 through 11 games, so there should be plenty of opportunities for Herrera to claim a large number of starts.
Apr 12 2022Herrera (oblique) was sent on a rehab assignment to Low-A Clearwater on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera missed Opening Day due to a strained right oblique. His original recovery timeline had him returning sometime in late April or early May, and it looks as though he may be on track to hit the early end of that window. He'll likely split time with Matt Vierling in center field once he's fully healthy.
Apr 10 2022Herrera (oblique) took five at-bats and served as the designated hitter in Clearwater on Saturday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera stayed behind at Philadelphia's spring training facility to begin the season while working his way back from an oblique injury. He is not expected to be activated from the injured list until late April, though this is a positive step in his recovery. Matt Vierling has served as the team's primary center fielder in Herrera's absence.
Apr 5 2022Herrera (oblique) will open the season on the 10-day injured list, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Reports from late March indicated Herrera would likely miss up to six weeks. His exact timeline isn't clear, but it's now been confirmed that he'll miss at least the first week of the season. Matt Vierling and Mickey Moniak will open the season splitting time in center field, and Herrera could be at risk of losing playing time once he returns if either of those young outfielders has a strong start to the season.
Mar 23 2022Herrera is likely to miss Opening Day after being diagnosed with a mild oblique strain Wednesday, and he could be out for 4-to-6 weeks, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera hasn't been officially ruled out for Opening Day, but it's fair to assume he won't be game ready with only 16 days until the April 8 opener against the A's. The 30-year-old re-signed with the Phillies on a one-year deal last week and was poised to start in center field, but Matt Vierling and Adam Haseley are now the likely candidates for the job. Herrera's recovery timeline should come into focus as he continues to be evaluated.
Mar 21 2022Manager Joe Girardi said Monday that Herrera hasn't yet appeared in a Grapefruit League game since he recently tweaked his side during batting practice, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Girardi said that the Phillies aren't doing imaging on Herrera's injury and don't believe the issue is serious, so it doesn't appear as though he's in time to miss significant time. Assuming the 30-year-old is able to make his spring debut in the coming days, it wouldn't be surprising to see him available for Opening Day.
Mar 14 2022Herrera agreed Monday to re-sign with the Phillies on a one-year contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. The deal is worth $1.75 million and includes an additional $750,000 in incentive-based bonuses, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Philadelphia found the upper end of the free-agent market for center fielders too rich for its blood, so the team opted to maintain continuity at the position by bringing back Herrera on a low-cost deal. The 30-year-old posted a respectable .318 wOBA (97 wRC+) against right-handed pitching in 2021 compared to a .299 wOBA (84 wRC+), so he'll presumably be targeted for the large side of a platoon in center field with Matt Vierling. The lack of a full-time role limits Herrera's overall fantasy upside, but the fact that Philadelphia used him as its leadoff hitter versus righties late in 2021 could make him a nice under-the-radar target late in drafts in deeper mixed leagues.
Nov 5 2021Herrera elected free agency Friday after being outrighted by the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His $11.5 million club option for 2022 was declined earlier this week and the two sides will now officially part ways. Travis Jankowski also heads to free agency, so the Phillies will need to have a productive winter to fill out the big-league bench and a starting outfield spot. Herrera hit .260/.310/.416 last season.
Nov 3 2021The Phillies declined Herrera's $11.5 million club option for 2022, but he'll remain with the team and is eligible for arbitration, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera inked the five-year, $30.5 million extension after the 2016 season, but the Phillies will take advantage of the $2.5 million buyout for 2022 rather than pick up the option. The 29-year-old appeared in 124 contests during the 2021 campaign and posted a .260/.310/.416 slash line with 13 homers, 27 doubles, 51 RBI, 59 runs and six stolen bases.
Oct 2 2021Herrera isn't starting Saturday's game against the Marlins, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was back in action for each of the last five games, and he went 7-for-21 with three doubles, two runs and an RBI in that span. Matt Vierling will take his place in center field and lead off against left-hander Jesus Luzardo.
Sep 26 2021Herrera (ankle) is starting in center field and batting leadoff Sunday versus the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera exited Friday's game with left ankle soreness and didn't see the field Saturday, but he'll rejoin the starting nine for Sunday's series finale. The 29-year-old is hitting .247/.281/.329 with one homer, four doubles, nine RBI and 11 runs through 20 games in September.
Sep 25 2021Herrera (ankle) will not start Saturday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera exited Friday's game with left ankle soreness, an issue which is evidently serious enough to cost him at least one start. Matt Vierling will lead off and start in center field.
Sep 24 2021Herrera was removed from Friday's game against the Pirates due to left ankle soreness, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera went 1-for-2 with a strikeout to begin Friday's matchup, but he was replaced defensively in the top of the fifth inning. It's not yet clear whether the issue will force the center fielder to miss additional time.
Sep 19 2021Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mets, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera started the past 10 games and will take a seat after posting a .640 OPS during that span. Matt Vierling will man center field against New York lefty Rich Hill.
Sep 16 2021Herrera went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI, two runs scored and a walk Thursday against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has swung the bat well of late, as he now has at least one hit in eight of his last 10 starts. In that span, he's tallied one home run, one stolen base, eight RBI and six runs scored. For the season, Herrera has maintained a .257/.313/.422 line across 434 plate appearances.
Sep 14 2021Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera got the Phillies off to a quick start in the contest, launching a solo shot to right field to open the home half of the first inning. The long ball snapped a 13-game homerless drought for the outfielder, though he hit a solid .298 over that stretch. Of his 13 round trippers this season, six came in a standout August.
Sep 11 2021Herrera went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 6-1 win over Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera extended his modest hitting streak to six games, and he's now hit safely in 12 of his last 13 contests. The outfielder owns a .261/.316/.424 slash line with 12 home runs, six stolen bases, 46 RBI and 49 runs scored across 413 plate appearances. His hot hitting recently has kept him in the lineup with some regularity.
Sep 7 2021Herrera will sit Tuesday against the Brewers, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera heads to the bench against lefty Eric Lauer. He started against the previous southpaw the Phillies faced but was on the bench for six in a row before that. Matt Vierling gets the nod in center field on this occasion.
Sep 3 2021Herrera is not in the lineup Friday against the Marlins, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will take a seat for the second time in the past three games with southpaw Jesus Luzardo pitching for Miami. Matt Vierling will man center field Friday for the Phillies.
Aug 31 2021Herrera will sit against lefty Patrick Corbin and the Nationals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has now been on the bench against the last five southpaws the Phillies have faced. Jorge Bonifacio starts in center field in his absence.
Aug 29 2021Herrera is not in the lineup Sunday against the Diamondbacks, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is 3-for-13 with a solo homer, a double and two additional runs scored through the first three games of the series, but he'll take a seat Sunday with lefty Madison Bumgarner on the mound. Jorge Bonifacio will man center field in his place for the finale.
Aug 25 2021Herrera isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera drew starts in each of the last three games and went 5-for-13 with two homers, a double, four RBI and two strikeouts. Luke Williams will take his place in center field and bat eighth.
Aug 22 2021Herrera went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, and three RBI in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera homered off Miguel Diaz in the seventh inning, extending the Phillies' lead to four runs. In addition, he singled in the fourth inning, driving in Ronald Torreyes and Travis Jankowski. He has homered in back-to-back games and three times in his last four. The 29-year-old is slashing .259/.313/.438 with 11 long balls, 39 RBI, 42 runs and four steals in 346 plate appearances.
Aug 21 2021Herrera (elbow) is starting Saturday's game against the Padres, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera suffered a right elbow injury in Thursday's game against Arizona, and he was held out of Friday's series opener against the Padres. However, he'll lead off and play center field Saturday.
Aug 20 2021Herrera (elbow) is not in the starting lineup Friday against San Diego, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera exited Thursday's game against Arizona after being hit by a pitch on the right elbow. He appears to still be feeling discomfort, as Jorge Bonifacio will fill in for him in center field Friday. Herrera can continue to be considered day-to-day until further update is provided.
Aug 19 2021Herrera was removed from Thursday's game against the Diamdonbacks after being hit by a pitch on the right elbow, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera didn't start Thursday's contest but entered during the seventh inning via a double switch, and he was hit by a pitch on the right elbow in his lone plate appearance. He should be considered day-to-day until his status is updated by the team.
Aug 18 2021Herrera (ankle) is starting in center field and batting leadoff Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was withheld from Tuesday's lineup due to soreness in his right ankle, but it appears to be a minor injury since he still appeared as a pinch hitter and is back in the starting nine a day later. The 29-year-old has a .318/.380/.500 slash line through 14 games in August.
Aug 17 2021Herrera is not starting Tuesday against the Diamondbacks because of soreness in his right ankle, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera missed the Aug. 8 game against the Mets with a sore right Achilles, so it seems possible that the ankle soreness could be related to that previous issue. It doesn't sound like the Phillies are overly concerned about the problem, and additional updates in the near future should make the severity of the injury more clear. Herrera can be considered day-to-day for the time being.
Aug 12 2021Herrera will sit Thursday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera missed Sunday's game with a sore right Achilles, but he returned to the lineup for the first two games of the series against the Dodgers, so this appears to be simply a routine off day. Travis Jankowski will start in center field in his absence.
Aug 10 2021Herrera (Achilles) is back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Mets due to a sore right achilles, but the outfielder is set to rejoin the starting nine after missing just the one game. He'll lead off as the left fielder against Max Scherzer on Tuesday.
Aug 8 2021The Phillies scratched Herrera from the lineup ahead of Sunday's game against the Mets due to right Achilles soreness, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera can be considered day-to-day for the time being, but the Phillies could still choose to send him in for further examinations. Luke Williams entered the starting nine as a last-minute replacement for Herrera in the outfield.
Aug 3 2021Herrera went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 7-5 win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took Josiah Gray deep in the fifth inning to get the Phillies on the board. Herrera hadn't gone yard in nearly a month, although he did miss time in that stretch with an ankle injury. For the season, the 29-year-old is slashing .243/.297/.392 with seven homers, four steals, 30 RBI and 35 runs through 74 games.
Jul 31 2021Herrera is not starting Saturday's game against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera went 0-for-2 with a walk Friday, lowering his average to .185 in nine games since returning from the injured list. He has driven in just a pair of runs during that stretch. Travis Jankowski will start in center field and bat eighth Saturday.
Jul 29 2021Herrera will sit for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Nationals, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera went 1-for-3 in the first game of the day. He'll sit against southpaw Patrick Corbin in the second contest, with Luke Williams taking over in center field.
Jul 28 2021Herrera isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera had started each of the last three games, and he went 3-for-10 with a double, an RBI, a walk and two strikeouts. Luke Williams will draw the start in center field and bat eighth.
Jul 25 2021Herrera will start in center field and bat sixth Sunday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since being reinstated from the injured list Thursday after missing about two weeks with left ankle tendinitis, Herrera started once in the Phillies' three games. However, with his primary competition for reps in center field (Travis Jankowski) landing on the COVID-19-related injured list Sunday, the lefty-hitting Herrera should have a clear path to regular reps in center field versus right-handed pitching. The righty-hitting Luke Williams -- who started the past two games when Atlanta brought lefties Drew Smyly and Max Fried to the hill -- could serve as a short-side platoon mate for Herrera.
Jul 24 2021Herrera is not starting Saturday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has hit an impressive .275 in 91 at-bats against left-handed pitching this year, yet he sits again with southpaw Drew Smyly on the mound for Atlanta. Despite not starting, the outfielder did enter Friday's contest and went 0-for-2. Luke Williams will start in center field and bat eighth Saturday.
Jul 23 2021Herrera is will not start Friday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera returned from an ankle injury Thursday and went 1-for-2 with a walk and a double. It's possible he's sitting Friday because the Phillies want to keep him on the bench against lefties like Atlanta starter Max Fried, or it's possible he's simply not being asked to start twice in a row immediately after his absence. Luke Williams will be the starter in center field.
Jul 22 2021Herrera (ankle) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera spent just under two weeks on the injured list due to left ankle tendinitis, but he went on a rehab assignment recently and went 4-for-8 with a home run, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base across two appearances. He'll start in left field and bat sixth Thursday against Atlanta. Nick Maton (finger) was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.
Jul 18 2021Herrera (ankle) will begin a short rehab assignment next week, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera is eligible to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list as early as Tuesday, but he'll require additional time on the shelf before he's cleared to return. However, the Phillies are optimistic that the outfielder won't require many rehab games prior to his activation.
Jul 10 2021The Phillies placed Herrera on the 10-day injured list Saturday with left ankle tendinitis, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera will be eligible to return July 20 against the Yankees, but it's unclear whether he'll require a more extended stay on the IL. The outfielder has hit just .211 in his last 10 games and hasn't drawn a walk in that span. JD Hammer was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jul 9 2021Herrera is not in the lineup Friday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera rejoined the lineup Thursday after sitting out the previous two contests with ankle and wrist issues, and he'll head back to the bench for Friday's series opener. Travis Jankowski will take over in center field for the Phillies.
Jul 8 2021Herrera is starting in center field and batting sixth Thursday against the Cubs, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera sat out the past two games while dealing with nagging ankle and wrist injuries. but he'll rejoin the lineup for Thursday's series finale. He is 2-for-15 with a three-run homer and an additional run scored through four games in July.
Jul 7 2021Herrera (ankle/wrist) isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Cubs, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera sat out Tuesday's win over the Cubs due to ankle and wrist injuries, and he'll remain out of the lineup for a second straight contest. He's still considered day-to-day, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be able to return for Thursday's series finale at Wrigley Field. Travis Jankowski will start in center field and bat eighth.
Jul 6 2021Herrera is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Cubs due to ankle and wrist injuries, and he's also expected to remain sidelined Wednesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Joe Girardi indicated earlier in the day the outfielder might receive a couple days off to recalibrate despite hitting a three-run homer Monday, and it appears he's also dealing with some minor injuries. Herrera should be considered day-to-day since the injuries aren't considered series, but he's still likely to miss at least two games.
Jul 5 2021Herrera went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Monday's 13-3 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder hadn't gone deep since June 18, a span of 14 games without a homer. He hit just .137 with five RBI, six runs scored and three doubles in that span. Herrera has an underwhelming .242/.294/.395 slash line with six long balls, 25 RBI, 33 runs scored and four stolen bases through 245 plate appearances. He's a fixture atop the lineup versus right-handed pitchers.
Jul 4 2021Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera has a .371 OPS over his past 12 games and will head to the bench Sunday with southpaw Blake Snell on the mound for the Padres. Luke Williams will start in center field and bat seventh.
Jun 20 2021Herrera is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty-hitting Herrera will head to the bench with a southpaw (Sammy Long) on the hill for San Francisco. Matt Vierling will pick up his first career MLB start in center field in Herrera's stead.
Jun 9 2021Herrera is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Phillies manager Joe Girardi is likely just looking to give Herrera a much-needed maintenance day after the outfielder started in every game since May 5. The newly recalled Luke Williams will cover center field, while second baseman Jean Segura handles Herrera's usual leadoff role.
Jun 1 2021Herrera went 3-for-6 with two home runs, three total RBI and an additional run scored in Tuesday's win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera extended his hitting streak to three games and has recorded three multi-hit games over his last five contests, so he's undoubtedly seeing the ball well after a rough stretch in which he went 3-for-20 between May 21 and May 26. This game also ended Herrera's home run drought, as he hadn't gone yard since May 12.
May 31 2021Herrera went 3-for-5 in Monday's 11-1 loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran outfielder equaled his hit total from his six previous games combined, but he was the only Phillie to have a multi-hit performance in Monday's rout. Herrera's .730 OPS is back around the level he maintained from 2015 through 2018, and he's batting .264 with two homers, three steals, nine RBI and 12 runs through 33 contests.
May 20 2021Herrera went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a stolen base in Thursday's 6-0 loss to Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder walked and stole second base in the third inning, but he was left on base. He again got stranded at second with a two-out double in the eighth inning. Herrera has gone 13-for-33 (.394) with a home run, two stolen bases, two RBI and five runs scored during his nine-game hitting streak. He's lifted his slash line to .274/.346/.397 in 81 plate appearances overall. The recent surge led manager Joe Girardi to bump Herrera up to the No. 2 spot in the order Thursday, although it's unclear if he'll stay there for long.
May 12 2021Herrera went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-2 extra-inning win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old took Nats closer Brad Hand deep in the top of the ninth inning to set up the Phillies' victory in the 10th. Herrera is on a roll, going 10-for-29 (.345) over the last nine games with both his homers on the year, five RBI and five runs.
May 11 2021Herrera went 2-for-3 with two walks, two doubles and two runs scored in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old seems to have found his rhythm at the plate. Herrera has gone 8-for-24 (.333) over the last eight games with one homer, four RBI and four runs as he solidifies his hold on the starting job in center field for the Phillies.
May 8 2021Herrera went 2-for-4 with a walk, a home run and four RBI in Friday's 12-2 rout of Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took Charlie Morton deep in the first inning for a three-run shot, giving the Phillies a 6-0 lead and helping to chase the Atlanta right-hander from the game. Herrera appears to be finding his form at the plate, going 5-for-15 over his last five games, and Friday's blast was his first extra-base hit of the season.
May 4 2021Herrera is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Brewers, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With southpaw Eric Lauer on the bump for Milwaukee, the lefty-hitting Herrera will cede center-field duties to platoon mate Roman Quinn. Since getting called up to the big club April 26, Herrera hasn't found much of a rhythm while serving as a near-everyday player for Philadelphia. In eight games, Herrera has gone 2-for-22 with one walk.
May 2 2021Herrera is not in the lineup Sunday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old started the past six games after having his contract selected April 26, but he'll take a seat Sunday after going 1-for-18 during that stretch. Roman Quinn is back from a one-day stint on the COVID-19 injured list and will start in center field against left-hander David Peterson.
Apr 26 2021Herrera's Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer by the Phillies on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera failed to win an Opening Day roster spot following a mediocre spring, as the fact that he'd lost his 40-man roster spot following his 2019 domestic violence suspension made him difficult to add to the roster unless he forced the Phillies' hand. They'll turn to him now in an expected everyday role after getting next to nothing from their other center fielders. Adam Haseley (personal) owns a .429 OPS, while Roman Quinn's sits at .334 and Mickey Moniak (who was optioned in a corresponding move) owns a .454 mark. If Herrera can get back to his form from his first two seasons, in which he posted a 110 wRC+, he'll be a big help to the Phillies, but that's not necessarily who he is any more. Since the start of the 2017 season, he owns a wRC+ of 94.
Mar 29 2021Herrera will not be on the Phillies' Opening Day roster, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera had to stand out from among a deep group of similarly mediocre options to win a roster spot in the Phillies' outfield this season, as he's no longer on the team's 40-man roster, having been designated for assignment last offseason following his 2019 domestic violence suspension. He failed to do that, hitting .231/.245/.481 in Grapefruit League action. Adam Hasley (.316/.381/.526) and Roman Quinn (.270/.341/.405) outperformed him and look set to split time in center field this season. Herrera is still potentially in the mix when the Phillies need an extra outfielder, though Mickey Moniak is probably ahead of him in that regard as he's on the 40-man roster.
Mar 23 2021Herrera has cooled off after a strong start to his Grapefruit League campaign, going 4-for-27 over his last nine games to bring his spring slash line down to .222/.243/.472. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given the fact that Herrera has a domestic violence suspension on his resume and is no longer on the Phillies' 40-man roster, he likely had to blow away the competition if he was to break camp with the team. He looked set to do that as Grapefruit League play began but has since fallen back to earth. The Phillies may not be particularly motivated to clear a 40-man roster spot for him, especially with Adam Haseley returning from a groin injury, Mickey Moniak tearing the cover off the ball (1.112 OPS), and Roman Quinn also looking capable (.780 OPS)
Mar 8 2021Herrera has emerged as the frontrunner to open the season as the Phillies' top center fielder after Adam Haseley was diagnosed Sunday with a left adductor strain that will likely sideline him for 3-to-4 weeks, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera previously served as the Phillies' primary center fielder from 2015 through 2018, but his career has been sidetracked since he was arrested in May 2019 on a domestic violence charge. Though the charge was eventually dropped, the 29-year-old was suspended for the rest of the 2019 season following his arrest before he was designated for assignment last winter. While he still doesn't possess a spot on the 40-man roster, Herrera has apparently worked his way back into the Phillies' good graces with a strong showing in winter ball followed by quality two-way play thus far in spring training. With Haseley likely to begin the season on the injured list, Herrera's top threats for the center-field job appear to be Scott Kingery and Roman Quinn, both of whom he's outperformed through the first week in camp. With a respectable.276/.333/.423 career slash line to go with a blend of power and speed, Herrera could be a name worth considering in the end game in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues.
Mar 4 2021Herrera looked good on both sides of the ball in Thursday's 15-0 Grapefruit League win over the Yankees, going 2-for-3 with a solo homer at the plate and recording an outfield assist in the field. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: League rules prevented the Phillies from further punishing Herrera following his domestic violence suspension in 2019, but nothing in the rules forces them to give him playing time. As such, he wasn't given a spot in the team's player pool last season, but he's been getting opportunities in spring games and has looked good so far. He'll have to really stand out for the Phillies to take on the baggage that would come with giving him playing time, but he could certainly force the team's hand with a strong camp, especially as the other center-field options in Philadelphia aren't the most inspiring group.
Feb 16 2021Herrera will get the chance to compete for the Phillies' center field job this spring, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies have kept Herrera in the organization since his May 2019 arrest for domestic violence, but they've shown no intention of adding him back to their roster. He missed the remainder of 2019 while serving a suspension and was not given a role in the team's player pool last year. From a purely on-field perspective, Herrera's career 102 wRC+ (the product of a .276/.333/.423 slash line) is significantly better than what the alternatives such as Scott Kingery, Adam Haseley, Roman Quinn and Mickey Moniak have managed. It's still not a particularly impressive resume, however, and he hasn't recorded a wRC+ above 100 since 2016, so the Phillies may see little need to take on the baggage that would come with giving him a roster spot.
Jan 16 2020Herrera cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera was designated for assignment Tuesday after missing most of the 2019 season while serving a suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy. He's expected to attend minor-league camp during spring training, but his long-term future with the team is uncertain.
Jan 14 2020Herrera was designated for assignment by the Phillies on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera missed most of the 2019 season while serving a suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy. This transaction is likely related to that incident; while Herrera was quite poor (.222/.288/.341) when available last season, he's a career .276/.333/.423 hitter who is still owed $19.5 million by the club. The Phillies were happy to move on despite the financial commitment and will give his spot on the 40-man roster to Nick Martini, claimed off waivers from the Reds in a corresponding move.
Nov 1 2019Herrera was activated from the restricted list Thursday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Herrera had been out since mid-May due to a suspension for violating the league's domestic violence policy. The Phillies may look to move on from their former starting center fielder this offseason due to both his actions and his .222/.288/.341 line prior to the incident.

Jul 22 2018Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday against the Padres.Herrera took Luis Perdomo deep in the fourth inning to record his 17th home run of the season. While he has already set a career-best home run total, he entered Sunday's action with only a .375 slugging percentage in the last 30 days. Despite that dip, he should still continue to rack up plenty of counting stats moving forward as he consistently bats third in the Phillies' lineup.
Jul 13 2018Herrera is out of the lineup against Miami on Friday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.Herrera will take a seat on the bench with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen on the hill for the Marlins. In his place, Aaron Altherr will draw a start in center field and bat eighth in the order.
Jul 9 2018Herrera isn't in the lineup for Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the Mets, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Herrera will take a seat for the second half of Monday's action, after going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts in Game 1. He'll be replaced in center field by Aaron Altherr, who's slated to back fifth.
Jul 6 2018Herrera went 2-for-6 with a three-run home run, four RBI and a walk in Friday's 17-5 drubbing of the Pirates.Herrera slugged a homer in the third to give the Phillies a 5-1 lead, and they never looked back. Herrera has been putting together a monster year, as he's already surpassed his season-high in home runs, and he's on pace to set a season-high in RBI with nearly half of the year to go.
Jun 30 2018Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday during the Phillies' win over the Nationals.Herrera sent his 14th big fly into the right field bleachers off a Jeremy Hellickson sinker during the third inning. He had gone hitless in his previous five starts, so this was a fine way to break out of that slide. Herrera now boasts a .286/.340/.481 slash with 14 homers, 46 RBI and 42 runs across 336 plate appearances in 2018.
Jun 22 2018Herrera went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and four runs scored Friday in the Phillies' 12-2 win over the Nationals.Herrera cleared the fences for the fifth straight game, this one elevating in the top of the third over the right field fence off Tanner Roark for his 13th big fly. He's also 7-for-9 in his last two contests, and since resting for Philadelphia's June 13 game, Herrera is 13-for-31 and slashing .419/.438/.968. The 26-year-old is crushing 2018 with a .299/.355/.491 slash, 13 homers, 43 RBI and 39 runs scored.
Jun 20 2018Herrera went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Cardinals. The 26-year-old has now homered in four straight games and five of the last six, giving Herrera 12 home runs on the season to go along with a .299/.355/.491 slash line. He's closing in on his career highs in homers (15) and RBI (56), and could eclipse both marks before the All-Star break given how locked in he is at the plate at the moment.
Jun 18 2018Herrera went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in Monday's 6-5 win over St. Louis.Herrera got the Phillies on the board early with a three-run blast in the first inning against Miles Mikolas. He's gone 7-for-23 with three home runs, six RBI and a double over his last five games, and he's batting .293 with a .815 OPS through 69 games on the season.
Jun 17 2018Herrera went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, a double, a walk and three runs scored in Sunday's 10-9 win over Milwaukee. After nearly a month-long home run drought, Herrera has two in his last three games. He's also had three multi-hit outings over the last four games. After closing May with a .313 average, he's currently slashing .291/.350/.453, much closer to his career average of .287. At this rate, Herrera will likely surpass his career highs of 15 home runs and 56 RBI.
Jun 13 2018Herrera is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Rockies.Herrera will sit for just the second time in the team's last 43 games. He has just six hits in his last 51 at-bats, but due to a hot start, his overall line is still a solid .283/.345/.429. Aaron Altherr will handle center field in his place.
May 27 2018Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays.Manager Gabe Kapler will give Herrera his first day off since April 24, with the absence most likely maintenance-related but perhaps due in small part to lefty J.A. Happ being on the mound for Toronto. Herrera looked as though he might be at risk of ceding more starts this season with the likes of Rhys Hoskins, Aaron Altherr and Nick Williams all making compelling cases for full-time roles, but Herrera has instead outproduced all of them. He enters play Sunday with a .333/.398/.522 batting line across 201 plate appearances, all of which are easily career-best marks.
May 19 2018Herrera went 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's win over the Cardinals. The hot-hitting Herrera turned on a John Gant offering and deposited it into the right-field stands, marking his seventh homer of the season and his first since May 11. Herrera is slashing .385/.475/.635 in May and is now up to four home runs for the month. He has settled in as the No. 3 hitter in Philadelphia's lineup and has been one of the NL's top players through the first quarter of the season.
May 12 2018Herrera went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Mets. His first-inning shot looked like it might hold up as the game's only run until Hector Neris melted down in the ninth. Incredibly, Herrera has reached base safely in all 35 of his starts this season, and he's actually been picking up the pace lately, going 12-for-21 with five walks, three doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and seven runs over his last six games to push his slash line up to .360/.429/.566.
May 8 2018Herrera went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and five RBI in Monday's blowout win over the Giants. The homers were Herrera's fourth and fifth of the season. He opened the scoring with a three-run shot in the first inning off of Jeff Samardzija. He then hit a two-run blast in the sixth against D.J. Snelten. For the season, the center fielder is now hitting .341/.401/.537.
May 5 2018Herrera went 1-for-4 Friday against the Nationals, extending his streak of consecutive games reaching base at least once to 33 games. The streak is the longest of its kind for the Phillies since Darin Ruf had a 33-game streak of his own back in 2012-2013. Herrera is having a career season for the Phillies so far this year, hitting .330/.387/.473 with three homers and a steal through 30 games. His .374 BABIP suggests those numbers are due to fall, though he's run high a high BABIP throughout his career, with a .360 lifetime figure, so he may not be due for a ton of regression. He's also cut his strikeout rate to 15.3 percent at a time when strikeouts are at an all-time high.
Apr 27 2018Herrera went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Friday's 7-3 win over the Braves. It was the first multi-homer game of Herrera's career, giving him three long balls on the season. He's now hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games with all three of his home runs and 10 of his 13 RBI, boosting his slash line to .348/.392/.528.
Apr 24 2018Herrera is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks.Herrera had started 16 straight games after sitting twice in the opening five. His hot start (.329/.369/.456) is giving him one of the few true everyday roles in the Phillies' lineup, but he'll still get the occasional day off. He sits Tuesday as the Phillies face a tough lefty in Robbie Ray, with Aaron Altherr playing center field in his place.
Apr 22 2018Herrera has been impressing the Phillies defensively so far this season, the Phillies' official site reports.Herrera leads all major-league outfielders with four 4-star plays (balls with a 26 to 50 percent likelihood of being caught according to Statcast) so far this season. He's already recorded four defensive runs saved, matching his total from last season. That stellar defense won't benefit owners in most fantasy leagues, but it will provide one more reason for manager Gabe Kapler to keep Herrera in the lineup every game. Herrera's hot bat (.338/.380/.473 through 19 games) is reason enough for him to remain in the lineup every day for now, but even once that falls back to earth, his glove should keep him largely immune from the Phillies' policy of heavily rotating their hitters.
Apr 20 2018Herrera went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in Friday's 2-1 win over the Pirates. He's now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, and Herrera has eight multi-hit games in his last 14 to boost his slash line to .343/.387/.486. The Phillies outfield remains crowded with five quality hitters jockeying for playing time, but Herrera's current form has made it impossible for manager Gabe Kapler to take him out of the lineup.
Apr 19 2018Herrera went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored Thursday against the Pirates.Herrera continued to swing a hot bat Thursday, extending his hitting streak to four-games. Now in the lineup regularly, he has also recorded at least one hit in eight of his past 10 games and thrived in his spot in the lineup sandwiched between Carlos Santana and Rhys Hoskins. Though it's early, he's gotten on base at a .380 clip, which has been backed up by him chasing fewer pitches outside the strike zone. If that were to continue, he should solidify his role in a prime spot in the Phillies' lineup.
Apr 17 2018Herrera has started ten straight games for the Phillies after sitting out Opening Day and two of the team's first five games.New manager Gabe Kapler likes to rotate his lineup heavily, and early in the year it appeared that Herrera would not be immune to that rotation, despite his objections. It now appears that Kapler views Herrera as an everyday player. The oufielder has rewarded his manager's faith by going on a tear to start the season, hitting .340/.397/.491 through 58 plate appearances. His .405 BABIP suggests that he's been getting rather lucky, though he's always been a high BABIP guy, with a career .361 figure, so don't expect that number to fall all the way down to league average (usually around .300). The 26-year-old has cut his strikeout rate by five percentage points while adding three percentage points to his walk rate, indicating that he's made real and potentially lasting improvements at the plate.
Apr 4 2018Herrera is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.Herrera will sit for the second time in just five games, something that will likely happen on a more recurring basis this season with the Phillies having more than three quality options on hand to fill out the outfield. For at least the time being, Herrera seems to hold a playing-time edge over Nick Williams, who has already sat out three times.
Mar 29 2018Herrera is out of Thursday's lineup against the Braves due to offensive and defensive matchups, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Manager Gabe Kapler has mapped out his lineups days in advance, and met with Herrera to explain that while he is sitting in favor of Aaron Altherr on Opening Day, he will still play a lot. One concerning aspect of this is that the Phillies are going with Altherr in part due to Aaron Nola's groundball tendencies, which means they view Herrera as the better defender and lesser hitter, at least against righties. This could be more of an even split between Herrera, Altherr and Nick Williams for the two outfield spots next to Rhys Hoskins than we thought coming into the season.
Mar 29 2018Herrera is out of the lineup for Thursday's opener against Atlanta. This is a bit of a surprise, as Herrera seems ticketed for close to everyday at-bats this season. Nonetheless, Aaron Altherr will start in center field and hit fifth while Nick Williams hits third and patrols right field.
Mar 1 2018Herrera (shoulder) will play in center field against the Rays on Friday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.Herrera has yet to play the field this spring after dealing with shoulder soreness over the past few days. Barring any future setback, Herrera should be fully recovered well before Opening Day.
Feb 28 2018Herrera (shoulder) is batting third out of the DH spot for Wednesday's Grapefruit League matchup with Toronto, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.Herrera has been dealing with a sore right shoulder in recent days but will return to the lineup for the final February outing of the spring. Though this is obviously a good sign, Herrera has yet to play the field in any spring games, which remains a necessary development before he can be deemed fully healthy.
Feb 26 2018Herrera is dealing with a sore right shoulder, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. This explains why Herrera has appeared in just one spring game so far, serving as the designated hitter. Manager Gabe Kapler described the issue as "natural muscle soreness" stemming from Herrera's throwing program, going on to say that he has zero concern about the ailment. Herrera threw from the outfield to the bases Monday and said he hopes to return to Grapefruit League action soon.
Sep 24 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Braves.Herrera is hitless in his last 16 at-bats and has seen his season average dip from .288 to .279 during that stretch. Manager Pete Mackanin will give the slumping center fielder the day off, with Aaron Altherr taking over in center field, while Rhys Hoskins shifts to left and Tommy Joseph enters the lineup at first base.
Sep 19 2017Herrera went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and an RBI in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Dodgers.Herrera was stranded on third base after leading off the fourth inning with a double, but was able to drive in a run with a bases-loaded walk before coming around to score on a Rhys Hoskins double in the seventh. While he's still two home runs short of last season's 15, Herrera now has 40 doubles in 127 games after producing only 21 in 159 games last year.
Sep 17 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the A's.After making five consecutive starts, Herrera will head to the bench ahead of the team's matchup with lefty Sean Manaea and the A's. Aaron Altherr will take over in center field, with Rhys Hoskins drawing the start in left and Tommy Joseph filling in at first base.
Sep 10 2017Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Following Saturday's disappointing outing in which Herrera went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, the Phillies will move Aaron Altherr over to center field and deploy Rhys Hoskins in left. With the team having Monday off, look for Herrera to return to the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.
Sep 7 2017Herrera received a scheduled day off Wednesday as part of his recovery from a hamstring strain, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. The Phillies are proceeding cautiously with Herrera to avoid any setbacks. He is scheduled to play the next two games and then get another day off Saturday. The 25-year-old is expected to play regularly after that.
Sep 4 2017Herrera (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Monday's series opener with the Mets.Along with Herrera, Aaron Altherr (hamstring) will return from the disabled list Monday, which could lead to some tough lineup decisions for Phillies manager Pete Mackanin. Most likely, Herrera, Altherr and Nick Williams will comprise the Phillies' starting outfield more often than not during the final month of the season, while sizzling rookie Rhys Hoskins (hand) shifts over to first base, displacing Tommy Joseph from a starting role at that position. Herrera, who was sidelined for just under three weeks with the hamstring injury, was riding a 17-game hitting streak prior to hitting the DL, during which he slashed .379/.431/.636 with three home runs and 10 RBI.
Sep 4 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera was reinstated from the disabled list before Monday's contest, but the Phillies will give him a little more time before slotting him back into the lineup. Once he's fully healthy, he's expected to reclaim an everyday role in the Phillies' lineup. In the meantime, Nick Williams is starting in center field for him.
Aug 31 2017Herrera (hamstring) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Double-A Reading on Thursday, and barring any setbacks, he'll likely rejoin the Phillies in New York on Monday, Bob Brookover of The Philadephia Inquirer reports.Herrera has been sidelined since Aug. 15 with a hamstring issue, and while he's nearing a return to the big club, he'll apparently need a few rehab games to find his footing before rejoining the Phillies. Once he returns, he should immediately reclaim his role as the everyday center fielder for Philadelphia.
Aug 29 2017Herrera (hamstring) will likely rejoin the Phillies when rosters expand on Sept. 1, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Manager Pete Mackanin said the Phillies are being cautious with Herrera so he doesn't aggravate his left hamstring. Pedro Florimon will continue to start in center field for the next few days until Herrera returns.
Aug 27 2017Herrera (hamstring) took batting practice Saturday and could soon be activated from the disabled list, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Herrera was eligible to return from the disabled list Friday, but the Phillies are being conservative with him to avoid any aggravation to his left hamstring. Pedro Florimon has started in center field the past two games while Herrera has been sidelined.
Aug 18 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said the Phillies are considering putting Herrera (hamstring) on the disabled list, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Herrera missed his third straight game Thursday and said he continues to feel soreness in his left hamstring. The Phillies added Pedro Florimon to their roster Thursday to give the team an additional bench bat. Nick Williams will likely see most of the playing time in center field while Herrera is sidelined.
Aug 18 2017Herrera has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Herrera has missed the Phillies' past four games and his trip to the DL will be backdated to Tuesday. As such, he could return as soon as next weekend's series against the Cubs. But with the Phillies squarely outside of the National League playoff picture, there's no reason to rush Herrera back.
Aug 18 2017Herrera (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. This marks Herrera's fourth straight absence, and according to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia, a pregame test of the hamstring "did not look promising." A DL move may be imminent. Nick Williams has started the past three games in center field and will likely stay there until Herrera is cleared to return to action.
Aug 17 2017Herrera (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Herrera will remain on the bench for a third straight game as he continues to nurse a sore hamstring. Nick Williams is starting in center field for him Thursday, opening up a spot for Hyun Soo Kim to start in right field. While Herrera said his hamstring was feeling better, he remains questionable for this weekend. Pedro Florimon was summoned to the big club to offer another bat off the bench in case Herrera can't go this weekend, which could indicate the team thinks he may not require a full 10-day stay on the DL.
Aug 17 2017Herrera (hamstring) said "maybe" when asked if he could play this weekend, Matt Gelb of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Herrera also did say his hamstring injury was feeling better. He has missed two games thus far, and it sounds like he will miss Thursday's game. The Phillies demoted Nick Pivetta on Wednesday in order to add another hitter to their roster which may be an indication the team thinks Herrera can avoid the disabled list.
Aug 16 2017Herrera (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against San Diego, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. It was expected that Herrera would miss the series finale after spending Tuesday on the bench while dealing with a hamstring issue. The 25-year-old suffered the injury during a play in the outfield Monday, and should be considered day-to-day for the time being. In his place, Nick Williams slides over to center while Cameron Perkins gets the nod in right.
Aug 16 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said he will likely hold Herrera (hamstring) out of Wednesday's series finale against the Padres, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera was out of the lineup Tuesday after injuring his hamstring running down a ball in center field late in Monday night's game against the Padres. Nick Williams started in center field Tuesday, giving Hyun Soo Kim a start in right field. With Daniel Nava (back) on the DL, Kim and Cameron Perkins could see a bump in playing time if Herrera has to miss additional games beyond Wednesday.
Aug 15 2017Herrera is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Padres due to a hamstring injury, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. It's unclear when the issue cropped up, as Herrera was able to play the entire game Monday, but he'll get the day to rest and recover. it's unclear if he'll require a disabled list stint at this point, though more should be known as he is further evaluated in the coming days. Nick Williams is starting in his place in center field, with Hyun Soo Kim manning right field.
Aug 9 2017Herrera went 2-for-4 with a pair of triples, a run and an RBI Wednesday in Atlanta.Herrera came in with just one triple this season, as his speed has dropped off considerably after last year's six-triple, 25-steal campaign. The 25-year-old outfielder has compensated for that decline with a rise in power, mashing a career-best 49 extra-base hits already en route to a .466 slugging percentage.
Aug 9 2017Herrera went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run, two stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBI in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Braves. He's now put together a tidy 11-game hitting streak, slashing .372/.413/.628 with three homers, seven RBI and seven runs during that stretch. The steals were Herrera's first since June 21, however, and were his first stolen-base attempts since June 24 -- there was no indication he was nursing any kind of lower-body injury during that time, making it a curious lapse for a 25-year-old player who swiped 25 bags last year.
Jul 29 2017Herrera went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI against the Braves on Saturday.Herrera blasted his 10th home run of the year off Jim Johnson in the bottom of the ninth inning to erase a one-run deficit and send the game into extra innings. He's been on a tear in July, so ride him while he's hot.
Jul 26 2017Manager Pete Mackanin pulled Herrera from Tuesday's 5-0 loss to the Astros after he did not run out a dropped third strike in the sixth inning, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Mackanin said he would talk with Herrera on Wednesday. It is possible he could try to send a message to his young outfielder by benching him for the series finale against the Astros. Herrera finished Tuesday's game 0-for-3, but has been on a roll this month, hitting .348/.408/.623 with four home runs in 66 at-bats.
Jul 26 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said that Herrera will not start Wednesday or Friday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The former Rule 5 pick was pulled from Tuesday's contest after failing to run out a dropped third strike, and it seems like Mackanin wants to prove a point with this move. However, the Phillies' skipper insists that this isn't a benching per se, but more of a result of the glut of production coming from Howie Kendrick, Aaron Altherr and Nick Williams. Herrera has been hot in his own right, but he'll need to keep doing the little things in order to maintain a regular role in the lineup.
Jul 26 2017Herrera is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Astros, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Herrera was benched during Tuesday's game after not running out a dropped third strike, so it comes as little surprise that he's not in the lineup for the series finale with Houston. What is a bit concerning is that Aaron Altherr is back from the DL to replace him center field for the evening, which could put a dent in his playing time moving forward. El Torito has certainly performed well enough as of late to maintain a regular spot in the lineup, batting .348 with four home runs in 66 July at-bats, although Altherr, Howie Kendrick and Nick Williams all have strong cases for regular playing time as well.
Jul 22 2017Herrera went 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and three runs Saturday against the Brewers. As part of his big offensive evening, Herrera connected on his ninth homer of the season to account for the only run the Phillies were able to score off Brewers starter Brent Suter. Despite his huge game, his overall .270/.312/.437 slash line hasn't been very useful in most fantasy leagues.
Jul 16 2017Herrera will bat leadoff against the Brewers on Sunday.Herrera heads back up to the top spot in the order following three consecutive games with a home run. The center fielder went 2-for-4 from the plate during Saturday's loss to Milwaukee, and stated that he was "ready" to return to his normal position at the start of the lineup. For Sunday's series finale, Daniel Nava will slide into the three spot while Maikel Franco bats cleanup against Matt Garza and the Brewers.
Jul 15 2017Herrera went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Saturday's loss to Milwaukee. It's been a disappointing campaign for Herrera after a strong 2016 showing. He's sporting an underwhelming .260/.297/.415 slash line with just eight homers, 32 RBI, five stolen bases and 34 runs. The outfielder showcased his cross-category profile last year, so he's worth keeping tabs on moving forward, but Herrera hasn't provided serviceable fantasy numbers in many settings to date.
Jul 9 2017Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a strikeout in Sunday's 7-1 win over the Padres.Herrera's striking out a career-worst 24.3 percent of the time, which is the primary reason why his numbers are down across the board compared to last season. Even with this home run, the 25-year-old outfielder's slashing a measly .256/.292/.396.
Jul 3 2017Herrera will start in center field and bat seventh Monday against the Pirates. After going 0-for-12 over a four-game stretch before sitting out Sunday's series finale against the Mets, Herrera will find himself lower in the lineup with manager Pete Mackanin sticking with Daniel Nava as the leadoff hitter for the second straight contest. Nava is likely just being rewarded for his 3-for-5 showing Saturday and isn't in line for an everyday role, so it's quite possible that Herrera will be back in the upper third of the order as soon as Tuesday.
Jul 2 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.Herrera is in a bit of a cold spell at the plate (hitless in his previous 12 at-bats), so he'll be given the day off to clear his mind. Aaron Altherr will take over in center field, with Nick Williams manning right field and Daniel Nava drawing the start in left.
Jun 27 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.Despite being in the midst of a 10 game hitting streak, Herrera will head to the bench for a breather after starting 23 straight games for the Phillies. Aaron Altherr will slide over to center field in his stead, opening up a spot for Cameron Perkins to start in right field.
Jun 21 2017Herrera went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Cardinals. He also made a crucial blunder, running through his coach's stop sign at third base and getting thrown out at the plate for the final out of the ninth inning in a game the Phillies would lose in the 10th. Herrera is now hitting .346 (28-for-81) in June, raising his average on the year up to .255.
Jun 21 2017Herrera is in the lineup and batting sixth Wednesday. This move comes after Herrera accumulated seven hits during the past four contests while coinciding with Cameron Perkins' first start in the big leagues. Perkins is batting leadoff and playing left for Wednesday's affair as Herrera takes over in his usual spot in center. The outfielder has ramped up his production lately, hitting .342/.359/.592 in the month of June, which causes this move to raise a few eyebrows. Although manager Pete Mackanin has yet to provide any reasoning on his decision, Herrera could just as easily move back to the leadoff position for Thursday's series finale.
Jun 12 2017Herrera went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run during Sunday's loss to St. Louis. The outfielder sports a 10-game hitting streak with 13 extra-base hits, 11 RBI, nine runs and a 1.306 OPS. The impressive stretch has him up to five homers, 23 doubles, 25 RBI and 25 runs for the season. Herrera might have a difficult time matching last season's 15 homers and 25 stolen bases, though, and the power-speed combo was a major aspect of what made him such a valuable fantasy asset in 2016. Still, his current uptick in production is encouraging.
Jun 8 2017Herrera was 1-for-4 with a run scored Thursday against Atlanta during Philadelphia's 3-1 loss.Herrera had been on a tear heading into Thursday, and he is still hitting .500 (12-for-24) in June. While Herrera isn't hitting for average like he did his first two seasons in the majors, he is on pace to have more home runs and RBI in 2017.
Jun 6 2017Herrera went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and two RBI in Monday's 11-4 win over the Braves.Herrera has caught fire over his last three games with six doubles, two home runs and a pair of singles in 13 at-bats. There were some whispers toward the end of May that Herrera may need a stint in the minors to get back on track, but he appears to have made the necessary correction in the majors. He still has a ways to go to get his numbers back to where we expected him to be, but he's put together big months in the past and the early signs indicate June could be a big month for the young center fielder.
Jun 5 2017Herrera went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a solo home run, three RBI and two runs during Sunday's win over the Giants. It was quite the weekend for Herrera. He went 5-for-8 with six RBI, and all five hits were for extra bases. After a breakout campaign in 2016, the outfielder sports an underwhelming .649 OPS with just four home runs and four stolen bases this season. It wouldn't be shocking if this was the beginning of a bounce-back stretch from the power-speed threat.
Jun 4 2017Herrera went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Giants.Herrera also had a long fly out to center field in the game. Perhaps this game will be the start of a turnaround for the struggling center fielder. Entering Saturday, Herrera had hit just .180/.194/.260 over his prior 25 games.
Jun 2 2017Herrera is out of Friday's lineup against the Giants. This probably won't come as a surprise to any of Herrera's owners. He is hitting just .134/.132/.164 with a 29.4 percent strikeout rate and zero walks over his last 67 at-bats. Aaron Altherr will start in center field and hit second while Howie Kendrick starts in left field. If the Phillies didn't have Herrera signed to a long-term extension, he would be in jeopardy of losing his starting job, but the team will likely try to help coax him out of his current funk, given their financial commitment to him.
May 31 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera will return to the lineup Wednesday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Mackanin benched Herrera for two games to give his young center fielder a chance to clear his head. He has had a terrible month of May, slashing just .181/.194/.257 with 29 strikeouts and one walk in 105 at-bats.
May 30 2017Herrera is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. As planned, Herrera will be held out of Philadelphia's lineup for the second consecutive game. A recent rough patch (5-for-48 over his last 12 games) has driven his line down to .217/.264/.328 for the season. After getting a couple days off, Herrera is expected to be back in the lineup for Wednesday's matchup with Miami.
May 29 2017Herrera is not in the lineup Monday against the Marlins, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera is in a horrible slump, going just 5-for-48 (.104) with two extra-base hits over his last 12 games, so he'll head to the bench to clear his mind. Aaron Altherr will slide over to center field for the game, opening up a spot in left field for Howie Kendrick to start.
May 29 2017Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera won't play until Wednesday to get a mental breather, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. The 25-year-old is just 5-for-48 (.104) over his last 12 games, so Mackanin will give him a couple days to clear his mind before inserting him back into the lineup. Look for him to return to the lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Marlins.
May 26 2017Herrera went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Rockies.Herrera's poor month of May continues as he is now slashing just .194/.211/.269 during the month with no homers and 28 strikeouts. He is swinging at a lot more pitches out of the strike zone this season which may be a factor in his struggles. The lack of patience at the plate is also an issue, as Herrera was at his best last season when he was able to work counts and take walks if pitchers weren't giving him pitches to hit. He should get plenty of time to fight his way out of this slump, but fantasy owners may want to consider benching him until he shows some signs of turning things around.
May 19 2017Herrera went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Rangers.Herrera is now hitless in his last 11 at-bats and is hitting just .215 in the month of May. He's abandoned his patient approach at the plate as evidenced by his one walk and 20 strikeouts in 15 games this month. The 25-year-old outfielder needs to get back to seeing more pitches which will lead to better results at the plate.
May 14 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Nationals, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera has been a mainstay in the Phillies' lineup this season but has yet to match the production he put forth during his first two big-league seasons. In his first 131 at-bats in 2017, Herrera is batting just .252, though his .145 ISO currently stands as his career high. Aaron Altherr will draw the start in center field, and Ty Kelly will occupy left field for Game 1.
Apr 30 2017Herrera went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Dodgers.Herrera didn't start the game but came in late and homered in the ninth inning off of Grant Dayton. The Phillies' center fielder is now up to three homers on the year to go along with nine RBI, three steals and a .262 average. He offers five-category contributions while hitting in the heart of the Phillies lineup. That kind of production warrants ownership across all formats.
Apr 30 2017Herrera is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers.Herrera has started 21 of the team's first 22 games, so he'll receive a day of rest Sunday as the Phillies face off against Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Dodgers. Aaron Altherr will take over in center field.
Apr 24 2017Herrera went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's win over Atlanta. It's been a solid start to 2017 for the 25-year-old outfielder, and he's well on his way to turning in another strong campaign that moves the needle across all rotisserie categories. While his upside is likely capped, it's also rare to find five-category contributors like Herrera, and he provides a nice fantasy floor hitting in the heart of the Philadelphia lineup.
Apr 18 2017Herrera is in the lineup Tuesday against the Mets, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. There had been some concern that Herrera incurred a minor injury while running the bases in Sunday's game. After the game, the team stated that Herrera was healthy, and his presence in Tuesday's lineup should alleviate any remaining concerns regarding his health. Herrera is hitting .275/.383/.350 after playing in 12 games this season.
Apr 16 2017Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals due to rest, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports.Herrera has been the only player used in center field for the team's first 11 games, but he'll take a seat in favor of Aaron Altherr on Sunday afternoon. All three regular outfielders are being held out of the lineup Sunday, so manager Pete Mackanin will instead use an outfield composed of Brock Stassi, Altherr and Daniel Nava.
Apr 16 2017Herrera is healthy after he seemed to hurt himself running to first base Sunday, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera entered Sunday's game as a pinch-hitter. After grounding out, he immediately went to the clubhouse with the Phillies' trainer. The club put any injury fears to rest following the game and reported that Herrera simply needed to stretch. Philadelphia has Monday off, so look for Herrera to be back in the lineup Tuesday against the Mets.
Apr 16 2017Herrera injured himself while pinch-hitting in Sunday's game against the Nationals, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera had initially been omitted from Sunday's lineup, but entered in the ninth inning as a pinch-hitter. Although he ended up grounding out, Herrera seemed to hurt himself while running to first base. More information regarding Herrera's health should become available once the team's training staff has the chance to examine him further.
Apr 8 2017Herrera went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk in Friday's 7-6 loss to the Nationals.Herrera went 2-for-3 against starter Max Scherzer and now has reached base 14 times in 33 plate appearances against the 2016 NL Cy Young award winner. Herrera is off to a great start this season with six hits in 14 at-bats, including two doubles and four walks.
Mar 24 2017Herrera (cramps) went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Twins.Herrera missed Wednesdays game due to cramping from dehydration. He is expected to hit third for the Phillies, giving him a solid spot in the lineup to increase his counting stats this season.
Mar 22 2017Herrera was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to cramps, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The Phillies' decision to remove Herrera from the mix Wednesday appears to be precautionary, According to Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice, Herrera is dealing with dehydration after returning from the World Baseball Classic.
Feb 28 2017Herrera was scratched from Tuesday's lineup after he discovered he needed to secure paperwork to play for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic next month, Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Herrera left the team to fly to the Venezuelan consulate in New Orleans. He is expected to return to camp later in the day Tuesday. Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera will play some left field this spring in order to help him prepare for the WBC since he will not be Venezuela's center fielder. He will remain in center field for the Phillies this season.
Feb 6 2017Galvis will start in the outfield for Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports.Herrera, who signed a five-year contract extension with the Phillies in December, is coming off a breakout year in 2016, having hit .286/.361/.420 with 15 home runs and 25 stolen bases. He will start alongside Carlos Gonzalez and Ender Inciarte in the outfield for Team Venezuela.
Dec 15 2016Herrera signed a five-year extension containing two additional team options with the Phillies on Thursday. The extension contains $30.5 million in guaranteed money, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Enquirer reports. The deal delays Herrera's free agency by at least one year and will last through the 2021 season, with the Phillies having the choice to keep him for 2022 and 2023. Herrera enjoyed a breakout season in 2016, making the All-Star team and establishing himself as a quality leadoff man and center fielder with a .286/.361/.420 line, 15 home runs, and 25 stolen bases. That led him to receiving quite the vote of confidence from the Phillies, receiving an extension and establishing himself as a building block for the Phillies' rebuilding effort. Pretty good for a player acquired in the Rule 5 Draft.
Nov 10 2016GM Matt Klentak said the Phillies do not plan to move Herrera out of center field next season, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports.Manager Pete Mackanin had mentioned a few times this year that the team was considering a move to a corner outfield spot for Herrera. However, Klentak said Herrera graded out well defensively among his evaluators in his second full season playing center field. He also added plenty of offensive value, hitting .286/361/.420 with 15 homers and 25 steals in 583 at-bats this past season.
Sep 21 2016Herrera is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox.Herrera is simply on fire with 15 hits over the last seven games he appeared in, but the Phillies are employing a lineup full of right-handed hitters against White Sox starter Chris Sale on Wednesday, so Herrera will open the game on the bench. Roman Quinn will get the start in center field in Herrera's place.
Sep 20 2016Herrera stuffed the stat sheet Tuesday against the White Sox, going 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored, three RBI and a pair of steals. All of Herrera's production came within the first five innings against right-hander James Shields. The center fielder has contributed a solid combination of power and speed with 15 homers and 24 stolen bases this season. The rest of his counting stats would likely be higher if he wasn't stuck batting for the league's least-productive offense.
Sep 14 2016Herrera is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Pirates, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports. With southpaw Steven Brault set to toe the rubber for the opposing Pirates, the left-handed hitting Herrera will head to the bench for the second time in the last four games. In his place, Roman Quinn will draw another start in center field and bat second Wednesday.
Sep 11 2016Herrera is out of Sunday's lineup against the Nationals.Herrera briefly dealt with a bruised leg recently, but there's yet to be an indication that his absence from Sunday's lineup is injury related. With Herrera out, Roman Quinn will start in center field and bat second.
Sep 10 2016Herrera (leg) is back in the lineup, hitting second Saturday against the Nationals, CSN Philly's Jim Salisbury reports. He left Friday's game with a bruised leg, and the issue was apparently minor, given that he's back in the lineup Saturday. Herrera has had a very strong season overall, but most of that production came in the first half. He is hitting .247 with three home runs, eight steals, 23 runs and just nine RBI in his last 50 games.
Sep 9 2016Herrera left Friday's game with a right leg contusion, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly reports. It appeared as though Herrera was hit square on the knee cap by a Tanner Roark pitch, but the Phillies left "knee" out of the official diagnosis. Peter Bourjos moved over to center field after Herrera left the game and will likely continue filling in at the position if Herrera is forced to miss additional time.
Sep 9 2016Herrera left Friday's game with an apparent right knee injury, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports. He was able to stay in the game initially after being hit on the knee cap by a pitch from Washington's Tanner Roark, but Herrera was ultimately lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning. His status for the remainder of the weekend is uncertain, but look for the Phillies to provide an update ahead of Saturday's contest.
Sep 6 2016Herrera went 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and three runs in a win Tuesday over the Marlins.Herrera had been batting just .083 for September prior to Tuesday, so this performance was an encouraging sign of life for the second-year centerfielder. He is slashing .280/.358/.408 on the season with 71 runs, 13 RBI, 13 homers and 20 stolen bases.
Sep 4 2016Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves.Herrera will take a seat for just the second time since Aug. 14, while Aaron Altherr moves to center field to allow Peter Boujos a start in right. The 24-year-old Herrera is 0-for-8 to start the month of September, but had hit safely in seven of his last eight games in August.
Aug 30 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera will remain in center field for the remainder of the season, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.A few weeks ago Mackanin said Herrera could be shifted to a corner outfield spot in September, but those plans have changed. Mackanin said the Phillies want to keep Herrera's mind "as uncluttered as possible right now," while trying to get him back on track offensively. He has hit just .251/.307/.390 since July 1 after hitting .303/.393/.428 over the first three months of the season.
Aug 20 2016Herrera went 2-for-5 with a solo homer, a walk and two runs in Friday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Cardinals. The blast was only his second of August and fifth overall since June 27, but Herrera has now hit safely in four of his last five games. The 24-year-old has come back down to earth somewhat of a dynamic first half, but is still slashing a solid .283/.365/.419 with 14 doubles, four triples, 13 homers, 42 RBI and 19 stolen bases on the season.
Aug 13 2016Herrera is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rockies. With the Phillies facing lefty Tyler Anderson, Philadelphia is using a predominantly right-handed lineup for Saturday's matchup. Herrera will be replaced in center field by Aaron Altherr, who hits .333 against southpaws.
Aug 13 2016Herrera went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs and a stolen base in Friday's 10-6 victory over the Rockies. The 24-year-old was a frequent presence on the basepaths in the high-scoring affair while hitting out of the two-hole. After a lackluster July in which he hit only .227, Herrera is now slashing .308/.419/.500 over 26 at-bats in August, while also hitting safely in four of his last five contests.
Aug 10 2016Herrera is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers, SB Nation's Eric Stephen reports.Herrera has been the Phillies' best offensive player this season but he recently received a three-game benching that was supposed to send a message about his lack of discipline and he will now make way for Aaron Altherr in center field during Wednesday's matinee. The Phillies could look to trade Herrera in the offseason, given the close-to-the-majors outfield depth in the farm system, so it would behoove them to keep his value high and keep him in the lineup most days, even if that means starting him in the outfield corners if they prefer to develop Altherr as a center fielder.
Aug 10 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera could be shifted to a corner outfield spot in September, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Mackanin is considering moving Aaron Altherr to center which would move Herrera to one of the corner spots. Herrera had a 9.9 UZR in center field last season, but has just a 0.2 rating this year.
Aug 9 2016Herrera said he has been getting treatment for an infection in his right foot, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. The injury hasn't kept Herrera off the field, but he said that it has been bothering him in the field and at the plate since the middle of last week. He started in center field Monday and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Aug 8 2016Herrera went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base in a 6-5 win over the Padres on Sunday.Manager Pete Mackanin sat Herrera for a few games last week to try to get him to refocus on his approach at the plate while also avoiding some left handed pitchers in the process. Herrera has struggled against lefties this season, so it would not be shocking to see him sit a bit more when a southpaw is on the mound. Aaron Altherr is capable of sliding over to center when Herrera is out of the lineup.
Aug 6 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said he has held Herrera out of the lineup for three of the last four games to send a message to his young outfielder, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports. "I'm giving him a little bit of a reprieve here just to back off a little bit and maybe he'll come in and ask me how come he's not playing, or maybe he'll take advantage of the time off to clear his head and get back to where he was before," Mackanin said. "He's a little less disciplined than he was earlier. He's swinging at too many bad pitches."Herrera has hit just .235 with a .290 on-base percentage since July 1, after hitting .303 with a .393 on-base percentage over the first three months of the season. His overall numbers this season are very good, but Herrera has also struggled against lefties, hitting just .236 with a .599 OPS in 106 at-bats. While Mackanin said he is sending a message to Herrera with the benching, he also has picked his spots by sitting him in games where the Phillies have been facing a lefty.
Aug 4 2016Herrera is out of the lineup Thursday against the Giants, the Philly Voice's Ryan Lawrence reports.By almost any measure, Herrera has been the Phillies' best position player this season, and he is simply getting a day off Thursday. Aaron Altherr will get the start in center field and hit second in his place, which will give the Phillies a chance to evaluate Altherr's defensive chops up the middle.
Jul 24 2016Herrera went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs in Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Pirates. The dynamic outfielder continued his assault on Pirates pitching and has now gone 6-for-9 over the first two games of the series. Herrera's three-bagger was his third of the season, and the recent success at the plate has been a welcome sight considering his month-long struggles. Even factoring in his pair of productive outings over the last two games, Herrera is still hitting only .240 over 75 at-bats in July.
Jul 24 2016Herrera went 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI Sunday at the Pirates.Herrera's 11th bomb of the campaign gave the Phillies a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning that the bullpen was unable to protect. He's now collected an extra-base hit in each of his last three games, and he slashing .290/.371/.431 on the year.
Jul 23 2016Herrera went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Friday's 4-0 win over the Pirates.Herrera needed a solid performance after going just 4-for-41 in his previous 11 games. His on-base percentage has been steadily declining since early this season when he was walking more than he was striking out, but his overall numbers remain strong.
Jul 10 2016Herrera (foot) went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Rockies.Herrera was held out of the starting lineup after fouling a ball off his foot Friday. It is unclear if he will rejoin the starting lineup Sunday, but manager Pete Mackanin told Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer that Herrera will be able to play in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.
Jul 10 2016Herrera (foot) is back in the lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Rockies.Herrera was not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his foot Friday night. The All-Star did come into the game as a pinch-hitter though, going 0-for-1 during the team's loss to the Rockies. Herrera will be playing center and leading off for the Phillies' final game of the first half.
Jul 9 2016Herrera (foot) is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rockies, Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Peter Bourjos will man center field and lead off against lefty Tyler Anderson as Herrera sits after fouling a ball off his foot Friday night. Herrera's status for Sunday's first-half finale is up in the air, but there has been nothing to suggest his availability for the start of the second half will be affected. The 24-year-old has already surpassed his home run total from 2015 and is just four steals off from his stolen base total from a year ago.
Jul 4 2016Herrera doubled, homered and knocked in a pair in a 2-for-5 game Monday against Atlanta. After he hit just eight homers in 147 games last year, Herrera needed just 83 games to get to double-digits for the first time in 2016. Herrera has been delivering as expected in the speed (12 SB) and contact (.303 AVG) departments, but with this kind of power display, he is turning into a complete player earlier than most could have expected.
Jul 1 2016Herrera went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI, a walk and two runs in Friday's 4-3 victory over the Royals. The dynamic outfielder led off the game in fine fashion for the Phillies, launching a solo shot off Ian Kennedy. He plated Cesar Hernandez with a sixth-inning single as well, and hit safely for the fourth time in the last five contests. Herrera has a pair of round-trippers during that span as well, and is sporting a .306/.396/.439 season line.
Jun 27 2016Herrera went 4-for-5, scored twice and knocked in a run in Monday's win over the Diamondbacks. This marks Herrera's third four-hit game already this season as he continues to be a hitting machine. His batting line is up to .307/.397/.436 as he has been the platonic ideal of the leadoff hitter for the Phillies this season. The big key to his success: a fantastic 41:58 BB:K in 325 plate appearances.
Jun 27 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said there are no plans to move Herrera to right field, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Speculation that a move was coming started after Herrera was seen shagging balls in right field before Saturday's game. He was in center field Sunday against the Giants and went 2-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored.
Jun 25 2016Herrera, who is not in the starting lineup Saturday, was seen taking fly balls in right field before the game, according to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia.Herrera has made seven errors in center field this season after making just five all last season. He's hitting enough to keep a starting job, but the defense may cost him some at-bats. A move out of a premium defensive position might be the best course of action for manager Pete Mackanin; he can keep Herrera's bat in the lineup without leaving the defense vulnerable up the middle.
Jun 25 2016Herrera is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Peter Bourjos will man center field and lead off with Herrera on the bench for the first time since June 6. An 0-for-3 showing Friday snapped six-game hit streak, but Herrera did drive in a run on a sac fly (and proceeded to flip his bat). The patience Herrera was showing early on this season hasn't been there as much of late, with the 24-year-old drawing three walks in his last 20 games.
Jun 13 2016Herrera went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI Monday in Toronto.Herrera opened the scoring with a solo shot off starter R.A. Dickey in the third before contributing a seventh-inning RBI single and a ninth-inning RBI groundout against the Blue Jays bullpen. The leadoff man had put together just one multi-hit game in his last 14 starts, and this was just his second time recording at least three RBI in a game this season. In other words, don't expect a repeat performance any time soon.
Jun 6 2016Herrera is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Herrera has been rock solid at the top of the Phillies' lineup this season, hitting .317/.426/.436 with five home runs, 32 runs scored, 17 RBI, and seven stolen bases. Peter Bourjos will give him a day off to rest, but Herrera should be back in the lineup Tuesday.
Jun 6 2016Herrera went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base in the Phillies' 8-1 win over the Brewers on Sunday.Herrera hadn't had a multi-hit game since May 27 and entered Sunday 4-for-27 over his last eight games. The stolen base was his first since May 12. He did have a couple of attempts since then, but was caught both times. He's slashing .317/.426/.436 with five home runs and seven stolen bases in 202 at-bats this season.
May 25 2016Herrera went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer and a walk in the 8-5 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon. The Philadelphia third baseman came through, hitting a bomb with two on and two outs in the fourth. It was his first homer since May 14. He now has five bombs with 17 RBI and a .327/.440/.461 slash line in 165 at-bats. Herrera nearly has as many walks (33) as strikeouts (35) this season.
May 23 2016Herrera was pulled from Monday's game against the Tigers after he jogged out a ground ball, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports.Herrera missed last Wednesday's game due to a sore back, but was taken out of Monday's game due to a lack of effort. This is good news for his availability in upcoming games, however, as there was no injury present in the manager's decision.
May 20 2016Herrera (back) is in the lineup for Friday's game against the Braves, Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports. He will return to his normal spots in center field and atop the order to face right-hander Matt Wisler after missing one start due to a sore back. The improvements Herrera has made with his approach this season have been dramatic, as he's more than tripled his walk rate while trimming his strikeout rate by more than seven percent. He's also lofting the ball more regularly and is already half way to his 2015 home run total of eight.
May 18 2016Herrera is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Marlins. He'll take a seat, while the Phililes use Peter Bourjos in center field and David Lough as their leadoff hitter against Miami right-hander Tom Koehler. Wednesday marks the first time in 2016 that Herrera has been held out of the starting lineup as he's started each of the Phillies' first 40 games while hitting no lower than third in the batting order.
May 18 2016Herrera did not play Wednesday because of a sore back, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Peter Bourjos moved over to center with Herrera sidelined. The Phillies have an off day on Thursday which will give Herrera an extra day to rest his back.
May 14 2016Herrera went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the 4-3 victory over the Reds on Saturday. He hit the bomb in the seventh to give the Phillies an insurance run, and it proved to be the game-winner. Herrera was hot in April, but he has been even better this month, going 19-for-51 (.373) with two homers, two steals, four RBI and eight runs. He is slashing .336/.447/.473 this season.
May 13 2016Herrera went 4-for-4 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored in the Phillies' extra-inning win over the Braves on Thursday.Herrera continues to rake. He has hit .400 with a .952 OPS over his last 14 games bringing his total slash line to .339/.450/.460 with three home runs and six stolen bases. He ranks ninth in batting average and second in on-base percentage across all of Major League Baseball.
May 7 2016Herrera went 3-for-5 in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Marlins. After seeing an 11-game hitting streak last Sunday, Herrera's bat has caught fire once again. He's hit safely in five straight since that game. He's hitting .450 (9-for-20) with three multi-hit outings over that span. The 24-year-old has proven to be one of the preeminent leadoff hitters in all of baseball this season, slashing .330/.453/.447 over 103 at-bats while contributing in every offensive category.
May 4 2016Herrera went 2-for-4 with his third homer of the year Wednesday against the Cardinals.Although Herrera's most eye-popping stat remains his incredible improvement in plate discipline -- he's already just four walks shy of last season's total, and in 119 fewer games, while his strikeout rate's way down -- it seems like he does something positive every single game. He's only gone hitless in five appearances this year, but the Phillies' lackluster lineup is keeping his counting stats (10 RBI, 17 runs) from popping off the page. At the very least, he seems likely to remain a strong contributor in batting average while adding some steals and helping significantly in formats that count OBP.
May 1 2016Herrera went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Indians. The talented sophomore is now working on an 11-game hitting streak, and has multi-hit efforts in the first two games of the series against the Indians. While the overwhelming majority of his hits over his current streak have been singles, Herrera has also been highly proficient in drawing free passes. He's already walked 23 times on the season, and is now slashing .313/.462/.425 over his first 80 at-bats.
Apr 23 2016Herrera went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four runs in a victory against Milwaukee on Saturday. The showcase of power is rare for Herrera, as the home run was just his fourth extra-base hit of the year, but the Phillies leadoff man has been getting on base a lot. He has 17 walks and just 16 strikeouts in 18 games. His .442 on-base percentage is ranked seventh in all of baseball.
Apr 21 2016Herrera said he has been working on being more patient at the plate this season, Evan Webeck of MLB.com reports. "I'm trying to be more patient each at-bat," Herrera said. "And that's giving me a lot of good results, so I'm going to keep trying to do it."Herrera has walked 15 times and struck out 16 times in 66 plate appearances this season. His .424 on-base percentage ranks 13th in all of baseball entering Thursday. Manager Pete Mackanin moved Herrera up to the leadoff spot Wednesday after previously saying he wanted to keep him in a run-producing spot in the lineup. Herrera has stolen just two bases thus far, but he could start to run a bit more if he sticks in the leadoff spot.
Apr 16 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said he has no plans to move Herrera into the leadoff spot, Jeff Neiburg of CSN Philadelphia reports.Mackanin hasn't been able to find an everyday leadoff hitter yet, but he won't move Herrera up because he wants him hitting with men on base. Herrera hit third Friday and went 1-for-2 with two walks. He is hitting .257/.422/.400 with a home run and a stolen base in 11 games.
Apr 10 2016Herrera went 1-for-3 Sunday with a walk and a two-run home run, his first homer of the season. The blast came off Matt Harvey in the sixth inning. Herrera's gotten off to a slow start at the plate, slashing .182/.280/.318 through 22 at-bats, but he'll get all the time he needs to turn things around. He'll look to build on this performance when the Phillies host the Padres for a three-game series beginning Monday.
Apr 8 2016Herrera went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in Thursday's game against Cincinnati.Herrera is off to a slow start in Philadelphia's first three games, getting one hit in 11 at-bats. The center-fielder also has 4:2 K:BB walk rate and the two walks brings his OBP to .231.

He has played in two games since returning from a two week layoff due to a finger injury.
Mar 25 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said there is a good chance Herrera (finger) will return to the lineup Friday, Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Herrera been sidelined since March 12 with a bruised left middle finger. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day despite missing nearly two weeks of at-bats.
Mar 25 2016Herrera (thumb) is hitting fifth and playing center field in Friday's spring training lineup, Matt Breen of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Barring any setbacks in the near future, Herrera appears on track to be ready for Opening Day. The Phillies have more than a week's worth of games to get him back into the mix, with 10 days until the team's opener against the Reds.
Mar 24 2016Herrera (finger) made the two-hour trip to the Phillies' game against the Astros on Wednesday, but did not get any playing time, CSN Philadelphia reports.Manager Pete Mackanin was hoping to get Herrera an at-bat in the game, but his left middle finger was still bothering him during batting practice. Herrera has now missed 10 straight games with the injury. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day, but he will need to start getting some at-bats soon to make that happen.
Mar 22 2016Herrera (finger) plans to return to spring games by the weekend, Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Herrera has been sidelined for the last week due to soreness in his left middle finger. Though expected to return in the coming days, he will have to wear a finger guard while batting, which could potentially impact his effectiveness at the plate. Herrera is still on track for Opening Day and is expected to get most of the playing time in center field.
Mar 21 2016Herrera is still feeling soreness in his finger and will be reevaluated Tuesday, CSN's Jim Salisbury reports. It was thought that Herrera would be able to resume hitting Tuesday, but it appears his injured finger has not progressed to the point the Phillies thought it would, and he could be sidelined longer. The Phillies figure to release an update on Herrera's status at some point Tuesday, but the delay could affect his status for Opening Day.
Mar 20 2016Herrera (finger) is expected to begin hitting Tuesday, CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera, who has been sidelined with a sore left middle finger, has been swinging a bat. Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera will be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 14 2016Herrera had an X-ray taken on his right middle finger which came back negative, Ryan Lawrence of the Philly Voice reports.Herrera reportedly injured the finger on a headfirst slide into home plate a couple weeks ago, although the injury is just surfacing now. He has been playing through the ailment and said that he's be available to play if need be, but it wouldn't be too surprising for the Phillies to give him a day or two off just to rest his finger.
Feb 28 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera will remain in center field this season, the Phillies' official site reports.Mackanin said last week that he was leaning toward keeping Herrera in center and made it official this weekend. Herrera will be flanked by Peter Bourjos and Aaron Altherr in the corner outfield spots giving the Phillies a very good defensive outfield.
Feb 25 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said he is leaning toward leaving Herrera in center field this season, the PhillyVoice reports.Earlier this year Mackanin said the Phillies could shift Herrera to left after acquiring Peter Bourjos, who is considered an elite defensive center fielder. Herrera made the conversion from infielder to outfielder last year. His 10 defensive runs saved was the most by a Phillies center fielder since Shane Victorino in 2008.
Jan 20 2016Manager Pete Mackanin said Herrera could be shifted to left field this season, CSN Philadelphia reports. The Phillies have indicated they will give Peter Bourjos, who is considered an elite defender in center, a chance to start this season. Herrera learned center field on the job as a Rule 5 pick last season. He should be capable of making the move to left relatively seamlessly. The Phillies will find a place for his bat in the lineup after he hit .297/.344/.418 with eight home runs and 16 stolen bases in 495 at-bats last year.
Oct 4 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins.Herrera will end the season on the Phillies' bench for each of the last two games, but that shouldn't put a damper on what has been an excellent debut year for the Rule 5 selection. Over 535 plate appearances this season, the 23-year-old Herrera has slashed .296/.342/.415 with eight homers and 16 steals, accumulating 3.8 WAR in the process, per FanGraphs. He should be in line to serve as the Phillies' starting center fielder in 2016.
Sep 29 2015Herrera went 4-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Mets.Herrera broke out of a 2-for-22 slump in spectacular fashion, posting his second career four-hit game. The 23-year-old has been a ray of hope in the Phillies' dismal season, showing a nice mix of some power and speed. Herrera has smacked 27 doubles and eight homers, while legging out three triples and swiping 15 bags. He has received steady playing time all season long, and figures to head into the 2016 campaign as Philadelphia's starting center fielder.
Sep 27 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Nationals, Robert Dawson of WNEW-FM reports.Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin will sit Herrera with lefty Gio Gonzalez on the mound for the Nationals. Aaron Altherr will pick up the start in center field.
Sep 21 2015Interim manager Pete Mackanin benched Herrera after his second at-bat Sunday when the outfielder threw his bat and failed to hustle to first base on a pop-out, the Philadelphia Daily News reports.Mackanin said this wasn't the only instance where he was unsatisfied with Herrera's reaction after a poor result at the plate, so he opted to send a message with a benching Sunday. Herrera should be back in the lineup Tuesday when the Phillies open a series in Miami.
Sep 16 2015Herrera in out of the lineup Wednesday.Herrera has 12 strikeouts in his last six games, but his .296/.336/.422 slash line on the season is impressive for a center fielder, and the advanced metrics seem to like his defense. His detractors will certainly point to his .383 BABIP, so he could be viewed as this year's Danny Santana, but on the Phillies he should get plenty of opportunities to back up his 2015 campaign next season. Aaron Altherr will get the start in center field Wednesday and hit third.
Sep 4 2015Herrera was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run in a losing cause against Boston on Friday night. After an extended cold spell that spanned most of the middle of the season, the Rule 5 pick has come alive in August and September to raise his average to a very handy .298 on the year. While he has done a respectable job for the Phillies, he has just seven long ones and only 36 RBI. Even his stolen bases have become less frequent (he has 14 on the year) so his fantasy value remains limited.
Sep 1 2015Herrera is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets.Herrera will get the night off with the Phillies using an all-righty lineup against Mets starter Jon Niese. Darnell Sweeney will get the nod in center field in Herrera's place.
Aug 31 2015Herrera went 4-for-4 with a run scored in the Phillies' 9-4 loss to the Padres on Sunday. All four hits were singles. Herrera could have had an even better stat line, but he was thrown out attempting to steal third base in the first inning. He is hitting .295/.333/.419 with six home runs and 14 stolen bases in 396 at-bats this season.
Aug 23 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins, Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.Herrera, who was recently moved into the No. 3 spot in the order, will receive a rare day off as the Marlins bring left-handed starter Adam Conley to the bump. Darnell Sweeney will replace Herrera in center field.
Aug 21 2015Herrera went 2-for-5 with a RBI and three runs in Friday's win over Miami. With the Phillies lineup undergoing a massive shift, the 23-year-old Herrera is helping lead a youth movement. Since Aug. 1, Herrera has been hitting .365, scored 16 runs and stole five bases. Herrera hit in the three-hole again on Friday and, with Maikel Franco potentially out for the rest of the season, he should continue to see opportunities to shine for the remainder of the season.
Aug 19 2015Herrera went 2-for-3 with a walk, a steal and two runs in Wednesday's win over Toronto.Hitting out of the three-hole for just the ninth time this season, Herrera continued what can fairly be referred to as the year of the Rule 5 pick. He hasn't been much of a source of counting stats, but Herrera has been legitimately helpful in deeper leagues with his contributions in batting average and steals.
Aug 6 2015Herrera went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in a 10-8 loss to the Dodgers on Thursday.Herrera is an exciting player to watch, but his fantasy value is lacking due to his counting stats. The stolen bases appeared to be his bread and butter, but with only five since the opening month, it's hard to rely on that going forward. Herrera may be a better option in years to come, but his relevancy this season is reliant in just NL-only formats.
Jul 22 2015Herrera is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays, Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal reports.Herrera started the last three games in center field, but he will give way to Ben Revere in Wednesday's game. The two continue to split the playing time in center field for the Phillies.
Jul 11 2015Herrera is batting lead-off Saturday.Herrera has been out of the lineup for a few days based on the pitching match-ups opposing teams throw at them. The right-handed Ryan Vogelsong the Phillies face tonight is a match-up manager Pete Machanin is looking for. Herrera is bating .266 this season with 23 RBIs, but is a .276 batter facing right-handed pitchers.
Jul 7 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Tuesday, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports. The Phillies are expected to be careful with Herrera against lefties and pitchers with a four-pitch mix, both of which apply to Tuesday's starter for the Dodgers, Brett Anderson. Ben Revere will get the start in center field Tuesday.
Jul 7 2015Interim manager Pete Mackanin said he will "be careful" with Herrera's playing time against lefties and pitchers that have a four-pitch mix that are different speeds, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Mackanin said Herrera is still learning to tone down his approach at the plate. He has hit .255 with a .617 OPS against lefties this season. Ben Revere will spell Herrera in center on days when he is out of the lineup.
Jul 3 2015Herrera went 3-for-6 with two RBI in Thursday's loss to the Brewers.Herrera had a very poor month of May while June was better, but still not as good as his first month of the season. He's started the month of July off on a solid note with five hits in his first 10 at-bats. He's now hitting .262/.291/.373 with two home runs and eight stolen bases.
Jun 17 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Wednesday, the Morning Call's Stephen Gross reports. His usefulness in fantasy leagues appears to be waning. Herrera will be out of the lineup for the fourth time in the last six games, and he has just two hits in his last 12 at-bats. Ben Revere will get the start in center field and hit leadoff Wednesday.
Jun 15 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Monday against the Orioles. That's now the third time in four games Herrera has found himself off the lineup card to start the game. Jeff Francoeur is coming off a multi-hit game Sunday and was rewarded with another start Monday with Ben Revere in center. Herrera is hitting .249 on the season and will need to claw back his lost playing time.
Jun 14 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Pirates.Herrera has started five of the last six games in center field, but will take a seat for the second time in the last three contests. Ben Revere will man center, with Jeff Francoeur (left) and Domonic Brown (right) composing the remainder of the Philadelphia outfield.
Jun 12 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Friday against the Pirates.Herrera's absence Friday likely relates to the left-handed Jeff Locke on the mound for the Pirates. The Phillies will instead go with an alignment of Ben Revere in center field, with Jeff Francoeur entering the lineup in right and batting fifth.
Jun 10 2015Herrera went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a stolen base in the Phillies' loss to the Reds on Tuesday.Herrera has at least one hit in each of his last three games. Perhaps it is a sign he is pulling out of his recent slump. He is hitting .255/.286/.372 with two home runs and seven stolen bases in 196 at-bats.
Jun 7 2015Herrera is back in the lineup Sunday against the Giants, Randy Miller of the Newark Star-Ledger reports.Herrera has been on the bench for the Phillies' previous three games on the heels of a 3-for-25 showing at the plate. Most of his playing time has gone to Jeff Francouer, but because the 23-year-old represents the more valuable long-term asset, expect Herrera to eventually settle back into a regular role.
Jun 5 2015Herrera is not in the lineup Friday against the Giants, MLB Lineups reports. The ice-cold Herrera will sit for a second straight day, following a terrible May that's leaked into a poor start to June. He has a .198 batting average and 32:3 K:BB ratio since the beginning of May, so while the Phillies don't exactly have great alternatives, Herrera is in danger of losing at-bats to the likes of Jeff Francoeur. Friday's lineup features Ben Revere in center field, flanked by Francoeur and Cody Asche.
Jun 4 2015Herrera is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Reds.Herrera tallied just three hit over his last seven games and has seen his batting average fall to .245, so he will get a day off to clear his head. Ben Revere will get the start in center field in Herrera's place.
Jun 1 2015Herrera went 2-for-4 in Sunday's loss to the Rockies. The hits broke an 0-for-16 skid for Herrera. It was his first multi-hit game since May 12. Herrera hit just .202 in the month of May, and will hope to turn things around in June.
May 30 2015Herrera is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rockies, Jake Kaplan of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Herrera has hit .170 in his last 16 games, but he's likely just getting the day off due to rest. Ben Revere will take over center for Saturday, but Herrera will need to perform better going forward for owners to be sure he keeps that starting role.
May 14 2015Manager Ryne Sandberg said Monday that Herrera is his center fielder, the Phillies' official site reports.Herrera has been struggling a bit at the plate of late, but the Phillies are committed to giving him a long look this season. The team has a potential log jam of outfielders with Cody Asche and Domonic Brown both expected to be recalled from the minors during the next month. Sandberg said Ben Revere, last year's starter in center, will only be used in center to give Herrera a day off as needed.
May 13 2015Herrera is on the bench against lefty Francisco Liriano on Wednesday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.Ben Revere will move over to center field, while Darin Ruf joins the lineup in left. Ryan Howard will also get a rare start against a left-handed pitcher in Wednesday's matchup with the Pirates.
May 13 2015Manager Ryne Sandberg said Herrera's recent decline in production is due to a combination of pitcher's making adjustments and his approach at the plate, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Sandberg would like to see Herrera take a simpler approach at the plate and look for more fastballs. Herrera, who went 2-for-4 with one strikeout Tuesday, has struck out 26.2 percent of the time this season. That is on par with Ryan Howard's strikeout rate, and not what you want to see from a hitter with little power who should be focused on getting on base to make use of his speed.
May 12 2015Herrera went 1-for-4 and hit his first major league home run off of Pirates closer Mark Melancon in a losing effort Monday night.A recent slide at the plate has brought his line to .267/.298/.379. Herrera may be in danger of losing playing time in the coming weeks as the Phillies are transitioning Cody Asche to the outfield with the plan of bringing up Maikel Franco to take over as the team's third baseman. If Asche becomes an option in left, Ben Revere could shift over to center.
May 10 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mets.Herrera had made five straight starts in center field, but will give way to Ben Revere on Sunday, with Darin Ruf in left and Grady Sizemore in right. The young outfielder is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in his last two games, so a maintenance day was likely needed.
May 3 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins, Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera will hit the bench Sunday carrying a six-game hitting streak, which has boosted his season average to .297, an impressive achievement for a player who hadn't played above Double-A ball prior to 2015. Darin Ruf will join the lineup in Herrera's absence, but the Rule 5 pick still has a lock on a regular spot in the Phillies' outfield.
Apr 18 2015Herrera went 3-for-4 Saturday with a walk, a double, an RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. The Rule 5 rookie in thriving through the early part of the season as the Phillies' leadoff hitter, and if he continues to be productive on the basepaths Herrera will quickly become a viable fantasy option in most formats.
Apr 15 2015Herrera ripped three extra-base hits -- two doubles and a triple -- and scored a run Wednesday in a loss to the Mets. This was by far Herrera's best game of the year. He continues to get regular playing time in the Phils' outfield, but Herrera's upside remains low, making him mostly an NL-only asset.
Apr 11 2015Herrera (foot) is back in the lineup Saturday against the Nationals.Herrera will step back in after missing three starts, presumably with the foot injury, though it's also possible manager Ryne Sandberg just felt others were more deserving of playing time. Jeff Francoeur has homered already this season, and it's possible he could continue eating into Herrera's opportunities, pushing Grady Sizemore to left field and Ben Revere to center.
Apr 10 2015Herrera (foot) remains out of the lineup Friday against the Nationals, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports. It's not entirely clear whether Herrera's absence is related to the foot issue, as he was able to come into Wednesday's game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement and pinch-hit Thursday. Manager Ryne Sandberg may very well just be playing the matchups Friday with lefty Gio Gonzalez on the bump for Washington, slotting Ben Revere into center field and Grady Sizemore into left.
Apr 9 2015Herrera (foot) entered Wednesday's game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement in center field.Herrera did not start Wednesday because of a tender left foot. He fouled a ball off of it Monday. He will likely be back in the starting lineup Thursday.
Apr 9 2015Herrera is out of the lineup again Thursday, the Philadelphia Daily News' Ryan Lawrence reports. This is the second straight day that Ben Revere has gotten the start in center field, and while it was thought that a tender foot was the reason for Herrera to be out of the lineup Wednesday, he was able to come in as a defensive replacement late in that game. It looks like the Phillies view Herrera as a part-time player right now, and that playing time could dip further once Domonic Brown is healthy in a week or so.
Apr 8 2015Herrera is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Red Sox, Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.Herrera was the announced starting center fielder for the Phillies to begin the season, but will sit Wednesday following an 0-for-4 start to the season Monday including two strikeouts. Ben Revere will start in center field Wednesday, with Darin Ruf and Jeff Francoeur starting alongside him.
Apr 8 2015Herrera (foot) will be available to pinch hit Wednesday, Stephen Gross of the Morning Call reports. The 23-year-old outfielder fouled a ball off the back of his foot and will be held out of the lineup for at least one game, but the fact that he's available off the bench suggests it's not a serious issue. Regardless, consider Herrera day-to-day until he actually returns to center field. Manager Ryne Sandberg will go with a lineup consisting of Darin Ruf, Ben Revere and Jeff Francoeur against Rick Porcello on Wednesday.
Mar 29 2015Herrera went 1-for-4 with a RBI in Saturday's loss to the Twins.Herrera started in center field for the Phillies. It is starting to look like manager Ryne Sandberg will shift the weak-armed Ben Revere to left this season which will create an opportunity for Herrera in center. He has also been hitting toward the top of the lineup. That too could carry over into the regular season. Herrera has stolen six bags this spring and could be a cheap source of steals in drafts or off the waiver wire in deeper leagues.
Mar 29 2015Herrera is the leading candidate to begin the season as the Phillies starting center fielder, Stephen Gross of The Morning Call reports.Herrera entered camp looking to make a mark as a Rule 5 draft pick out of the Rangers' organization, and has apparently made enough of an impression in camp to warrant a starting spot. Ben Revere is expected to move to left field, likely bumping Grady Sizemore out of an everyday starting spot.
Mar 22 2015Herrera left Saturday's game with soreness in his right knee, but said he expects to play Sunday, CSN Philadelphia reports.Herrera was starting in center field Saturday with Ben Revere making his first start of the spring in left. It is a strong sign that the Phillies are going to give Herrera a significant role and perhaps even a starting job when the regular season begins. He is 12-for-33 with four stolen bases this spring.
Mar 22 2015Herrera (knee) returned to action Sunday and made a second straight start in center field.Herrera, who started learning to play the outfield in winter ball, made a defensive miscue that turned a Mookie Betts triple into an inside-the-park home run. Manager Ryne Sandberg told CSN Philadelphia that it will be a day to day decision whether Herrera sees more time in center.
Mar 5 2015Herrera reached base four times, stole three bases and scored two runs in the Phillies' win over the Yankees on Wednesday. It is hard to get too excited about one game, but Herrera showed what he can bring to the table if he gets semi-regular playing time. He is a high contact hitter with good speed. That combination can make him a nice end game option in deeper leagues. He doesn't have a clear path to playing time at the moment, but it seems likely he will earn a bench job with the Phillies this spring.
Feb 27 2015Herrera has made an impression thus far in camp, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. "He's been the talk of camp," said Mike Ondo, the Phillies' director of pro scouting. "He's shown a lot of bat speed and a willingness to learn - so far, so good."Herrera, a Rule 5 pick from Texas this offseason, is expected to see time at all three outfield spots this spring with the occasional look at second base. He is heavily favored to win a bench job with the Phillies as the team really likes his bat. The question with Herrera is if he will develop any power. He did show some signs of improving power in the Venezuelan Winter League, but he'll have to prove that wasn't a fluke this season.
Jan 14 2015Herrera was named the MVP of the Venezuelan Winter League on Monday, the Phillies' official site reports.Herrera hit .372 with six home runs and eight stolen bases in 58 games for La Guaira. He was selected by the Phillies in the Rule 5 draft this winter, and will likely earn a bench job with the club this spring.
Dec 12 2014Mike Ondo, the Phillies' director of pro scouting, said Herrera will come to camp primarily as an outfielder, CSN Philly reports. The Phillies selected Herrera from the Rangers' farm system in Thursday's Rule 5 draft. He was originally a middle infielder, but has recently started playing outfield, including center field in Venezuela this winter. With the Phillies rebuilding, there should be opportunities for more playing time for Herrera next season then what is typical for most Rule 5 picks.
