Mar 23 2024The Marlins reassigned Givens to minor-league camp Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens didn't sign until mid-March, so he had an uphill battled to make the Opening Day roster. The veteran reliever could still see lots of action in the Marlins' bullpen this season, but he'll head to Triple-A Jacksonville for now to knock some rust off.
Mar 12 2024Givens threw a bullpen session Tuesday and could progress to live batting practice by Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Signed as a non-roster invitee over the weekend, Givens is ramping things up in a hurry in hopes of convincing the Marlins to carry him on their Opening Day roster. The veteran reliever was limited to just six appearances last season because of shoulder issues but appears to be healthy now.
Mar 10 2024Givens signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Sunday that includes an invite to big-league camp, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander endured a rough campaign with Baltimore last season as he made just six appearances due to a shoulder injury before being released in August. Givens had a 3.38 ERA in 59 outings for the Cubs and Mets in 2022 and would provide the Marlins some veteran bullpen depth if he can earn a roster spot and get back to that form.
Aug 13 2023The Orioles reinstated Givens from the 60-day injured list Sunday and designated him for assignment, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens struggled during his brief time with the Orioles this season, surrendering five runs in four innings before landing on the injured list with a shoulder injury in early June. After a lengthy recovery, Givens threw three scoreless innings with Triple-A Norfolk during his rehab assignment and could remain there for the foreseeable future if he goes unclaimed off waivers.
Aug 3 2023Givens (shoulder) moved his rehab assignment to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens tallied two strikeouts over a scoreless inning in his rehab debut earlier this week in the Florida Complex League and is now just one step away from becoming an option again for the Orioles' bullpen. He's been on the shelf since early June due to nagging right shoulder discomfort.
Jul 31 2023Givens (shoulder) reported to the Orioles' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Monday to begin a rehab assignment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens hasn't pitched for the Orioles since May 31 due to right shoulder inflammation, so he'll likely require multiple rehab appearances in the minors before he's deemed ready to return from the 60-day injured list. The 33-year-old has typically operated as a setup man throughout his career, but Givens may have to settle for a middle-innings role out of the Baltimore bullpen once activated.
Jul 1 2023The Orioles transferred Givens (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens landed on the injured list June 2 (retroactive to June 1) with right shoulder inflammation, so his move to the 60-day IL will push his return back into early August. The 33-year-old reliever resumed throwing recently and is slated to begin a rehab assignment after the All-Star break. His spot on the 40-man roster was filled by Chris Vallimont, who was selected from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday.
Jun 30 2023Givens (shoulder) is slated to begin a minor-league rehab assignment shortly after the All-Star break, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has been playing catch on flat ground without issue and will head to Florida next week to begin throwing off a mound. A rehab stint will follow, which should put him in line to return to the Orioles' bullpen well before the end of July. The veteran reliever has been on the shelf since June 2 due to lingering right shoulder discomfort.
Jun 27 2023Givens (shoulder) is scheduled to get re-evaluated in the coming days with the hope that he'll be cleared to resume playing catch later this week or next week, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens was recently pulled off his rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk after experiencing renewed discomfort in his shoulder. Manager Brandon Hyde suggested over the weekend that the Orioles don't believe that Givens is dealing with a significant setback, but the fact that the reliever will go at least a week without throwing suggests he's no longer on track to return from the 15-day injured list before the All-Star break.
Jun 25 2023Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Givens has had some right shoulder soreness, but there's a "low level of concern," Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens appears to have suffered a minor setback, but it seems he'll be back on his rehab assignment soon. It's likely the right-hander reliever is out for most of the rest of the upcoming week, depending on how his shoulder responds in the coming days.
Jun 24 2023Givens (shoulder) will not make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, and instead will be getting an evaluation in Baltimore, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has been out of action since the start of June because of right shoulder inflammation, and he's only been able to give the Baltimore bullpen four innings because of injury. The right-hander could be an option for the Orioles in the early portion of next week, but that will at least be partially determined by the results of the evaluation come Sunday.
Jun 18 2023Givens (shoulder) is unlikely to be activated during the Orioles' upcoming two-game series versus the Rays, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has made two rehab appearances, one at Double-A Bowie and one at Triple-A Norfolk. He's allowed a run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout over those outings, which suggests he may need a bit more time to ramp up. The Orioles also are unlikely to have a pressing need in their bullpen with days off Monday and Thursday, so Givens may get another rehab outing or two before an activation no earlier than Friday.
Jun 13 2023Givens (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Bowie on Wednesday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He'll then move up to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday and seemingly could be activated after that if all goes well. Givens has been limited to just six appearances for the Orioles this season due to knee and shoulder injuries.
Jun 2 2023Givens was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to June 1, with right shoulder inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens will be out for at least the next two weeks as he recovers from a barking shoulder. The 33-year-old reliever has surrendered six runs -- five earned -- in four innings this season out of the Orioles' bullpen.
Jun 1 2023Givens (0-1) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out to take the loss Wednesday versus the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens allowed the first three batters in the fifth inning to reach base, and Mike Baumann couldn't stop the bleeding after that. Through six appearances, Givens has given up six runs (five earned) over four innings with a meager 2:6 K:BB. He has a hold and a blown save. Initially considered an option to feature in a high-leverage role, the right-hander is unlikely to be in the late-inning mix until he gets his performance on track after missing nearly two months with knee soreness.
May 21 2023Givens allowed a run on a hit and two walks while striking out one in one inning, taking a blown save in Sunday's 8-3 extra-innings win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens had been out of action due to knee soreness since mid-March. While he made six rehab appearances, he still looked a bit rusty in his big-league season debut, which saw him yield the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. The right-hander has worked extensively as a late-innings option throughout his career, racking up 85 holds and 31 saves over eight seasons. Felix Bautista will likely remain the closer for the Orioles, so Givens is looking at a setup role at best for now, though he may need some low-leverage work to get acclimated over the next couple of weeks.
May 18 2023Givens (knee) threw a bullpen session at Camden Yards on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's expected to be the last step before he's cleared to return from the injured list, as Givens could fly with the Orioles for their weekend series in Toronto and be activated any day. The veteran reliever has been out all season with a left knee issue.
May 17 2023Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Givens (knee) will throw a bullpen session in Baltimore at some point over the next couple of days, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The side session could be a final test of Givens' health before he's activated from the 15-day injured list, with his reinstatement perhaps coming prior to Friday's series opener in Toronto. Givens has been on the shelf all season with left knee inflammation but recently wrapped up a six-appearance minor-league rehab assignment.
May 12 2023Givens (knee) could be activated following one more rehab appearance with Double-A Bowie, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens made back-to-back appearances with Bowie on Wednesday and Thursday, so he'll need at least one day of rest before pitching again and then being re-evaluated. Assuming he bounces back with no issues, he should be activated at that point. Givens has been out all season with a knee issue.
May 8 2023Givens (knee) is scheduled to make his fourth minor-league rehab appearance Wednesday with Double-A Bowie, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has tossed three scoreless innings thus far for Bowie, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out five. Though he certainly looks ready to return from the 15-day injured list from a results standpoint, Givens noted that he needs a little more time to regain strength in his left knee. If all goes well Wednesday, Givens could be activated ahead of the Orioles' three-game series versus Pittsburgh this weekend.
Apr 28 2023Givens (knee) has joined Double-A Bowie to begin a rehab assignment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Given has been out all season with left knee inflammation and, thus, would figure to need at least a couple rehab appearances. He'll likely be ticketed for middle relief once the Orioles decide he's ready.
Mar 30 2023The Orioles placed Givens on the 15-day injured list Thursday with left knee inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens tested out his knee with a bullpen session Sunday, but it didn't go well. He's not expected to be long, but an IL stint was required.
Mar 26 2023Givens (knee) threw just 10 pitches in Sunday's bullpen session before walking off the mound, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens is attempting to work his way back from knee soreness, but he was able to throw only 10 pitches before walking off the mound, and he reportedly threw his glove in frustration following the session. There should be further updates coming on his status going forward, but this does not appear to be a positive development.
Mar 4 2023Givens will make his Grapefruit League debut next week, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has been doing work on the back fields rather than pitching in early spring games. Manager Brandon Hyde didn't offer up a specific debut date for Givens. The right-hander logged a 3.38 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 71:25 K:BB across 61.1 innings between the Cubs and the Mets last season. He figures to serve in a middle-relief spot to begin 2023, though a strong start to the campaign could see him in line for setup work.
Dec 19 2022Givens signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the Orioles on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old reliever spent the first five-plus years of his career in Baltimore, recording a 3.32 ERA and 1.14 WHIP between 2015 and 2020. Givens has been consistently reliable for most of his career, and his ability to strike batters out (10.56 career K/9) will allow him to pitch in plenty of high-leverage situations out of the bullpen in 2023.
Nov 9 2022The Mets declined their portion of Givens' $3.5 million mutual option for 2023 on Wednesday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander was acquired from the Cubs at the trade deadline and had a 4.79 ERA over 20.2 innings for the Mets. Givens has a 3.41 ERA in 135 appearances over the past three seasons, but he's played with six different teams during that time and is now headed back to free agency.
Oct 5 2022Givens (illness) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list and will start Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old has been sidelined the past few weeks but will rejoin the Mets for the final game of the regular season. Givens will make his first start as a professional and shouldn't record more than a few outs before giving way to the bullpen.
Sep 28 2022Givens (illness) struck out two over a scoreless inning in his rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Syracuse. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Givens checked out fine during the rehab outing and is set to rejoin the Mets now that he's fully cleared all COVID-19-related protocols. He could be reinstated from the injured list in advance of Friday's series opener in Atlanta.
Sep 17 2022Givens was placed on the injured list for undisclosed reasons Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Not only did the Mets not give a reason for Givens' absence, they also didn't denote which injured list he was placed on, which fits the pattern teams have used when placing players on the COVID-19 injured list. Stephen Nogosek (oblique) returned from the injured list to take his place on the roster.
Sep 3 2022Givens (7-3) picked up the win in Friday's 7-3 victory over the Nationals, walking one and striking out one over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander took over from David Peterson in the top of the sixth inning and was in the right place at the right time to benefit from a Pete Alonso go-ahead home run in the bottom of the frame. Givens had an ugly first appearance for the Mets -- five earned runs in 0.2 innings -- back on Aug. 3 and has seen little high-leverage work since, but over the 13.1 innings following that implosion he's posted a palatable 4.05 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB with one win and one hold.
Aug 2 2022The Cubs acquired Givens from the Mets on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Saul Gonzalez, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens temporarily looked to be the next man in line for saves with the Cubs, but he'll wind up leaving the Windy City along with David Robertson, Scott Effross and Chris Martin. It would take an injury to Edwin Diaz for Givens to have any shot at save chances in his new home, but he could fill a key setup role for the Mets.
Jul 27 2022Givens struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his second save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Closer David Robertson pitched Saturday and Sunday, but his absence from this game will undoubtedly spur more trade rumors around the 37-year-old. Instead it was Givens who got the call in a save situation -- perhaps to showcase him for a deal to a contender, or perhaps as an audition for the closer role if Robertson does get moved -- and he breezed through the middle of Pittsburgh's batting order. The right-hander has six wins and six holds this season in addition to his saves, and he hasn't allowed an earned run in 15 straight appearances, posting a 0.98 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB through 16.1 innings over that impressive stretch.
Jul 25 2022Givens (6-2) worked around a hit and a walk to pitch a scoreless inning of relief and earn the win Monday against the Pirates. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens got into some trouble and needed 24 pitches to work through the eighth inning, but the righty managed his 14th straight outing without allowing an earned run. His six wins this season are actually second on the team, which is a bit of good luck but also indicative of the struggles of Chicago's rotation. Either way, Givens has been able to deliver some fantasy value from the bullpen despite not serving as the team's closer, though it's hard to count on the wins to keep coming.
Jun 14 2022Givens allowed four runs without recording an out during Tuesday's loss to the Padres. He gave up one hit and three walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens replaced Scott Effross after the latter allowed consecutive singles to start the seventh inning. Givens promptly allowed a walk, a double and two more walks before getting the hook. It was easily the worst outing of the season for the righty, who saw his ERA climb from 3.09 to 4.63 in the process. Givens' track record suggests he'll bounce back, though it may take a little while for his ERA to come back down below 4.00.
May 15 2022Givens (3-0) recorded two outs in relief and earned the win Saturday against the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has now earned a win in each of his last two appearances despite allowing two earned runs on three hits across 1.2 innings. That's given the righty a 3.38 ERA for the season, which is in line with the 3.35 ERA he posted last year. Expect similar results for Givens moving forward, though he's unlikely to keep picking up wins at this rate. With David Robertson on the COVID-19 injured list, Givens could also see some save opportunities in the near future, though Rowan Wick earned the save Saturday.
May 11 2022Givens (2-0) allowed two runs on two hits in an inning of work but managed to earn the win Wednesday against the Padres. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens allowed two solo home runs in the seventh inning and was charged with his second blown save of the season, but the righty earned the win when the Cubs scored twice in the top of the eighth. With David Robertson on the injured list for undisclosed reasons, which fits the pattern teams have used when a player lands on the COVID-19 injured list, it was Rowan Wick who saw end-game work Wednesday. The situation could be fluid until Robertson returns, but it appears that Givens will set up Wick.
Apr 14 2022Givens recorded a save against the Rockies on Thursday, pitching a scoreless inning during which he allowed one hit and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was summoned in the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead and did so successfully, working around a one-out single to post a scoreless frame. He struck out two in the outing, giving him seven punchouts over 3.1 frames to begin the season. David Robertson picked up the first two saves of the campaign for the Cubs, but he wasn't called upon Thursday despite not pitching the previous day. It's possible that manager David Ross will use a committee to close out games this season, with Robertson and Givens appearing to be the early frontrunners for save opportunities.
Mar 30 2022Chicago manager David Ross may use multiple pitchers to close out games this season, which could put Givens in the mix for saves, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens had eight saves a season ago with the Reds and Rockies, and had 11 back in 2019 with the Orioles, so he has some experience in the closer role. Rowan Wick is the presumptive favorite to lead the Cubs in save opportunities early on, but the 31-year-old Givens certainly appears to be in the mix and could earn a bigger share of ninth-inning work if he pitches well to start the year.
Mar 17 2022Givens signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Cubs on Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens served as a late reliever for the Reds and Rockies in 2021 and posted a 3.35 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 51 innings across 54 relief appearances. During that time, he converted eight of 11 save opportunities and racked up 11 holds. Rowan Wick converted five of eight save chances last year and entered spring training as the favorite to serve as the Cubs' closer, but Givens will have the chance to compete for ninth-inning duties ahead of the 2022 campaign.
Sep 26 2021Givens (4-3) earned the win in relief Saturday against the Nationals after tossing a scoreless inning. He didn't record a walk or strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens entered the game to pitch the ninth inning with the game tied 6-6, and he was able to deliver when it mattered the most -- he tossed just six of his 11 pitches for strikes but still retired the side with a groundout, a popout and a flyout. The right-hander bounced back from his previous outing, when he gave up three runs in just two-thirds of an inning, and that has been the lone instance in which he's given up runs over his last four contests.
Sep 24 2021Givens allowed three runs on three hits and two walks in Friday's win over Washington. He recorded two outs, including one strikeout, and was charged with a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens entered a 7-4 game and quickly retired the first two batters he faced. He then coughed up three runs, including a two-run single by Luis Garcia. The 31-year-old is now 8-for-11 in save chances this season with a 3.12 ERA through 49 innings.
Sep 16 2021Givens picked up the save Thursday after tossing a scoreless inning against the Pirates. He allowed two walks and no hits while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With a tight 1-0 lead and one out in the ninth, Givens walked back-to-back batters. The right-hander quickly minimized the threat, however, leading him to convert his eighth save out of night tries since joining the Reds in July. In that span, Given has compiled a 3.06 ERA and 1.36 ERA across 17.2 innings.
Sep 10 2021Givens picked up the save against the Cardinals on Friday with a scoreless inning during which he allowed one hit and struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens continues to shine in the closer role for the Reds, as he has successfully converted seven of eight save opportunities since joining the team in late July. He worked around a one-out single versus St. Louis on Friday to close out the 4-2 victory, striking out a pair of batters in the process. Givens has compiled a 2.76 ERA and 49:22 K:BB across 45.2 frames this season. With the Reds fighting for the second NL wild card, Givens likely has a secure hold on the team's closer position as long as he continues to be effective.
Sep 7 2021Givens allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning against the Cubs on Tuesday en route to his sixth save of the season. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A two-out single by Alfonso Rivas put the tying run on base, but Givens was able to buckle down, record the final out and end the Reds' four-game losing streak. All six of Givens' saves this season have come in 15 appearances with the Reds; he may not have sole possession of the closer job, but he looks like manager David Bell's preferred option at the moment.
Sep 4 2021Givens fired a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit while striking out one to earn the save in the win over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens entered the ninth inning with a three-run lead. He allowed a leadoff single to Robbie Grossman, but retired the following two batters and finished a game on a double-play. The 31-year-old has emerged as the main closer for the Reds, with all five of his saves coming since Aug. 5. He has a 3.46 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 12 punchouts in 13 innings with the Reds this season.
Aug 21 2021Givens gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his fourth save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander has emerged as the Reds' latest closer after coming over from the Rockies at the trade deadline. Givens has yet to allow a run in nine appearances and 9.1 innings since joining the team, reducing his ERA on the year to an impressive 2.08, and he's converted four straight save chances.
Aug 15 2021Givens allowed no hits and a walk while striking out two in 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the save in Sunday's win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has tossed 12 consecutive scoreless innings across his last 12 appearances, and he's now picked up saves in three of his last four outings. The right-hander was traded to Cincinnati on July 28 and has allowed two hits and five walks while striking out eight in eight appearances since then. He's earned three saves and three holds since the trade and currently appears to be the favorite for ninth-inning duties.
Aug 8 2021Givens struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has posted saves in each of his last two appearances, and his scoreless streak is up to nine innings. Despite a 1.23 WHIP, one of the highest of his career, Givens has pitched to a 2.27 ERA across 35.2 innings between Colorado and Cincinnati this season. He's been immediately entrusted with a high-leverage role, and it appears he could join the likes of Heath Hembree, Lucas Sims and Amir Garrett in manager David Bell's closing committee.
Aug 5 2021Givens secured the save, firing a perfect ninth inning in the win over the Pirates on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens entered the ninth inning with a three-run lead. He retired all three batters in order to pick up his first save of the season. The Reds decided to give the 31-year-old a chance to close and he is the 10th Cincinnati player to record a save. The Reds are one of the most inconsistent bullpens this season, and no one has been able to lock down the closing role. Givens has only given up two runs in 19 innings since May 22, and Thursday may be a sign that he gets thrown into the mix for more saves.
Jul 28 2021Givens was traded from the Rockies to the Reds on Wednesday in exchange for right-handers Case Williams and Noah Davis, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has served mainly as a setup man for the Rockies this year, recording eight holds with a 2.73 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 29.2 innings across 31 relief appearances. The right-hander could be in consideration for high-leverage work with his new club as part of Cincinnati's bullpen, which has been inconsistent for most of the season.
Jul 6 2021The Rockies activated Givens (back) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A back strain kept Givens out since June 15. The righty held opponents scoreless in each of his last seven appearances and boasts a 2.78 ERA through 22.2 innings this season. Ben Bowden was optioned in a corresponding move.
Jun 30 2021Givens (back) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens resumed playing catch last week, and he'll make rehab appearances Thursday and Friday. The right-hander has been on the injured list with a left lower back strain since June 17, but he could return to Colorado's bullpen in the near future if his rehab games go well.
Jun 24 2021Givens (back) was cleared to begin playing catch Tuesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The light throwing marks the first meaningful step forward for Givens since he was shut down last week with a left lower-back strain. Rockies manager Bud Black suggested that the reliever could soon be ready to begin throwing off a mound, which would give Givens an outside chance of returning from the injured list before the end of June.
Jun 17 2021Givens was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left lower back strain Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens hadn't allowed any runs in seven innings across his last seven relief appearances, and he had picked up holds in each of his last three outings. The severity of the injury isn't yet known, and it's unclear whether he'll need to spend more than the 10-day minimum on the injured list. Right-hander Justin Lawrence was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.
May 16 2021Givens (1-2) allowed two runs on a hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. He struck out none and was also charged with a blown save. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Daniel Bard had pitched three of the last four days, so Givens got the call for a save opportunity and promptly made a mess of it. A passed ball with the bases loaded allowed Tucker Barnhart to score the game-tying run. Givens was relieved by Jordan Sheffield, whose wild pitch led to another run tacked onto Givens' line. The 31-year-old has a 4.02 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB across 15.2 innings this year. He's added three holds and a 1-1 record in 17 outings.
Apr 3 2021Givens (0-1) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks while recording a strikeout in Saturday's loss against the Dodgers. He was credited with the loss. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens struggled as soon as he stepped on the mound ahead of the eighth inning, and he was unable to get the job done -- he allowed an inside-the-park home run following Raimel Tapia's fielding error and also gave up an RBI double to put the Dodgers away for good. Givens posted a 3.63 ERA last season while making 22 appearances off the bullpen in 2020, and this debut shouldn't be encouraging for fantasy owners who drafted him.
Mar 14 2021Givens fired one perfect inning while striking out one as he earned the hold in Saturday's spring win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens had a rough start to spring training, as he allowed three runs in his first Cactus League appearance this year. However, the right-hander has now allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out two over two scoreless innings in each of his past two appearances. Manager Bud Black has named Daniel Bard the team's closer to begin the season, and Scott Oberg will likely serve as the primary setup man if he's fully built up in time for Opening Day. Givens should serve as a late reliever heading into his first full year with the Rockies, but he has several pitchers ahead of him who are more likely to receive save chances.
Jan 14 2021Givens signed a one-year, $4.05 million contract with the Rockies on Thursday, to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens was traded to Colorado in the middle of the 2020 season. He struggled in a very small sample with the team, surrendering seven earned runs and four long balls across 9.1 frames. Givens has 21 career saves -- one of which came during the 2020 campaign -- and he could hold the closer role at some point during 2021.
Sep 20 2020Givens tossed one-third of an inning to pick up the save Sunday against the Dodgers. He did not allow a baserunner or record a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens entered to get the final out after Daniel Bard struggled to start the frame. It marked the right-hander's first save of the campaign. Bard still figures to be first in line for save chances, though it certainly wouldn't be shocking if Givens get another shot to pitch the ninth during the season's final week.
Sep 12 2020Givens gave up one run on one hit and one walk without recording a strikeout in one inning Friday against the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was charged with a blown save after giving up a solo home run to Jared Walsh in the top of the eighth inning. The Rockies still ended up getting the win in regulation, even with Daniel Bard giving up another run in the top of the ninth inning. Givens is the de facto setup man for his new team with Bard serving as the closer.
Aug 30 2020The Orioles traded Givens to the Rockies on Sunday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Baltimore's return in the deal remains unknown, but Givens will head westward to provide Colorado with another experienced late-inning arm while the team's top two closing candidates to begin the season -- Wade Davis (shoulder) and Scott Oberg (arm) -- remain on the injured list. Givens saved 20 games for the Orioles between 2018 and 2019, but he served in more of a setup role in 2020, posting a 1.38 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB over 13 innings while notching five holds. He could challenge Daniel Bard and Carlos Estevez for closing duties in Colorado, at least until Davis is back from the IL.
Jul 12 2020Orioles pitching coach Doug Brocail said Sunday that Givens remains in the mix to close, but Baltimore has yet to decide on a top option for the ninth inning, Jon Meoli of The Baltimore Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens finished as the Orioles' save leader in 2019, but he netted only 11 of them for an 108-loss squad and supplemented that total with a 4.57 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB in 63 innings. Though Givens enters 2020 as the best of the established options in a weak Baltimore bullpen, his standing atop the depth chart is shaky after 2013 first-round pick Hunter Harvey showcased some dominant skills in a small late-season sample with Baltimore (11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings). Harvey looks like the better bet to be the long-term answer at the back of the bullpen, but it wouldn't be surprising if Givens opened 2020 as the team's preferred closer given his experience. Brocail also indicated that southpaw Richard Bleier could be in the mix for saves against lefty-heavy lineups, which would make it even more difficult to justify investing in either Givens or Harvey, especially with the Orioles expected to be one of MLB's weaker teams once again.
Jul 6 2020Givens threw off a mound at Oriole Park on Monday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The takeaway is that Givens is healthy and ready to start ramping up with less than three weeks before Opening Day. He and Hunter Harvey are expected to get the bulk of the save chances this season for Baltimore.
Mar 23 2020Givens allowed five earned runs off five hits, two strikeouts and one walk over 4.1 innings during spring training. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens began spring training with a case of the flu, but he was able to return to the mound and log four appearances. While he struggled over a limited sample size, his spot in the Orioles' bullpen is likely safe once the regular season begins. However, Givens isn't guaranteed the closer role after manager Brandon Hyde expressed confidence in Hunter Harvey's ability to claim that role during the offseason.
Feb 27 2020Givens (illness) completed a bullpen session Thursday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens has yet to make his Grapefruit League debut after missing time in camp due to a case of the flu, but he's made a full recovery from the illness at this point. Assuming he feels fine physically coming out of Thursday's workout, he should be cleared to pitch in a game at some point over the weekend.
Feb 26 2020Manager Brandon Hyde suggested that Givens (illness) could be ready to make his Grapefruit League debut Thursday or Friday versus the Pirates, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Givens is no longer dealing with any flu-like symptoms after falling ill earlier in camp, but he's needed some additional time to get his arm ready for game action due to the workouts he missed. As a reliever who hasn't worked more than two innings in any outing since 2017, Givens probably only needs a handful of appearances this spring to guarantee his availability for Opening Day. He profiles as the top option for saves in the Baltimore bullpen, but those opportunities may not be plentiful with the Orioles likely bracing for a third straight 100-loss season.
Feb 16 2020Givens (illness) feels better and is scheduled to resume workouts Monday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was sent home Friday due to the illness, but it appears to have been a minor issue as he has already resumed playing catch, per Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. Givens enters training camp as the favorite for the closer role after converting 11 of 19 saves with a 4.57 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB over 63 innings last season.
Feb 14 2020Givens was sent home Friday with an illness, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The illness doesn't appear likely to significantly impact Givens' preparation for the upcoming season. He appears to be the favorite to close for the Orioles, though the team's bullpen hierarchy hasn't been officially confirmed.
Jan 10 2020Givens signed a one-year, $3.225 million deal Friday with the Orioles, avoiding arbitration, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old receives a bump in pay from $2.15 million in 2019 after moving in and out of Baltimore's closer's role. Givens had a 4.57 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB over 63 innings while going 11-for-19 in save opportunities. Givens figures to begin the 2020 campaign in a high-leverage role, but there's hardly any guarantee he sees ninth-inning opportunities.
Aug 28 2019Givens posted a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts to garner his 11th save in a 2-0 victory against the Nationals on Tuesday.
Aug 21 2019Givens allowed one hit with one strikeout during the ninth inning to secure his 10th save in a 4-1 victory against the Royals on Tuesday.
Jul 27 2019Givens pitched 1.1 innings, allowing a run on a hit and two walks while striking out two to convert his ninth save of the season in Saturday's 8-7 win over the Angels.

May 12 2018Givens picked up his first save of the season Saturday against the Rays, allowing one hit while striking out one batter across 1.2 innings.Givens needed just 20 pitches -- 15 of which were strikes -- to record the last five outs of the game en route to the first save of his career. Brad Brach recorded a four-out save Friday, so it's possible manager Buck Showalter turned to Givens to afford Brach a breather. Either way, despite his solid 3.32 ERA and 28:9 K:BB through 21.2 innings this season, he doesn't figure to see many save opportunities moving forward with Brach pitching well and Zach Britton (Achilles) and Darren O'Day (elbow) both hoping to return before the end of the month.
Apr 3 2018Givens has notched three strikeouts without allowing a run in 2.1 frames this season. The Orioles entered the year with a committee approach in the ninth inning, but have not had a lead to protect since Brad Brach coughed up the lead on Opening Day. As Givens is seen as a long-term piece in Baltimore, was mentioned by manager Buck Showalter as an option for saves, and has pitched well this season, he is a worthwhile flyer for those looking for saves on the waiver wire.
Mar 23 2018Givens will split save opportunities with Brad Brach and Darren O'Day, Eduardo A. Encina of The Baltimore Sun reports.Brach was assumed to hold the closing role until Zach Britton returns, as he was the one called upon last year when Britton was out. It now appears that the team will go with a committee approach. Whether that lasts or a clear winner emerges remains to be seen, but even if Givens were to claim the job early in the season, he'd likely only hold it for two months until Britton returns. All three members of the committee are statistically very similar, making a winner hard to predict. Givens had the best ERA of the trio last season (2.75) though his FIP was the highest by a hair (3.72). He's also the youngest at 27 years old, so he's theoretically the most likely to take his game to the next level this season. He's worth a flyer at his price in case he wins the job, though he may only end up providing ratio help with just a small handful of saves.
Mar 7 2018Givens appears likely to be one of the primary setup options in the Baltimore bullpen to begin the season with Brad Brach expected to handle the closer role while Zach Britton (Achilles) is on the disabled list.Even if he is not piling up saves, Givens has the strikeout upside and good ratios necessary to be an impact arm in some mixed leagues. Brach's strikeout rate dropped to a three-year low last season (25.5 percent), and Givens could be first in line to replace him as the temporary closer if manager Buck Showalter opts to make a change at some point between now and the time Britton returns, which won't occur until late May at the earliest.
Jan 9 2018Manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday that Givens is one of four relievers who could close games while Zach Britton (Achilles) is out, Rich Dubroff of PressBoxonline.com reports.Givens will need to impress in spring training, particularly against left-handed hitters, in order to leap Brad Brach in the pecking order for saves while Britton is out (likely until late June). Darren O'Day and Richard Bleier were also mentioned by Showalter as potential options in the ninth inning, but Brach and Givens seem to be the clear top speculative plays in fantasy. The Orioles view Givens as a building block, and he is coming off his best season as a pro (2.75 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 88 strikeouts in 78.2 innings). However, Brach's success as the fill-in closer last season gives him a leg up entering spring training.
Sep 15 2017Givens allowed a run on one hit and a walk while failing to record an out Friday against the Yankees. The reliever finished August on a rough note, but had logged four hitless appearances (4.2 innings) while striking out seven in September. Givens failed to come through Friday, though, and his ERA ticked up to 2.64 through 63 games. He still ranks among the AL's top five with 21 holds, but it's been nearly three weeks since he's last collected one.
Aug 4 2017Givens (7-1) blew the save and was handed the loss Friday against Detroit after allowing three hits, including the eventual game-winning grand slam.Starter Kevin Gausman turned over a 2-1 lead in the eighth to one of the best setup relievers in baseball. Unfortunately for him, it wasn't Givens' night and his failure to convert led to a 5-2 loss. Albeit disappointing, the 27-year-old has been dominant all season and Saturday is nothing more than a blip on the radar.
Aug 2 2017Givens pitched a perfect eighth inning Wednesday against the Royals en route to his career-high 18th hold of the year.Coming off a breakout sophomore campaign, the 27-year-old has been simply spectacular in a setup role this season. Givens now ranks in MLB's top ten for holds, and he's tied for most wins (seven) by a reliever. With a cool 1.89 ERA and 0.92 WHIP, the Miami-native has become a valuable fantasy commodity in deep formats.
Jul 23 2017Givens pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts to record his seventh win of the season during Sunday's victory over Houston.Collecting seven wins is difficult for a reliever, and Givens has supported it with a high-end 1.97 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 9.5 K/9. The 27-year-old righty projects to continue pitching in high-leverage situations and offers modest fantasy value in deep settings. Just keep in mind that he could easily finish the year with seven victories, and Givens shouldn't be viewed as a reliable source of wins moving forward.
Jul 8 2017Givens allowed a hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings Saturday in Minnesota to earn his 15th hold of the season. The big right-hander now ranks fourth in the AL for holds, and second in the league with a 93 percent strand rate. Additionally, Givens' high-leverage role has afforded him the opportunity to notch six wins this year, making him just one of six MLB relievers to do so. Playing in his third big-league season at 27 years old, he's due to experience speed bumps along the way, but Givens has established himself as one of the game's best high-leverage relievers.
Jul 1 2017Givens allowed one run and struck out 13 across 12.2 innings in June. The 27-year-old struggled throughout May, but has answered with a dominant June. Givens has a 2.25 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 39 strikeouts over 40 innings this season, and also has a 6-0 record and leads the Orioles with 14 holds. Closer Zach Britton is set to come of the DL shortly, but Givens should still hold some value as one of Baltimore's best options for seventh and eighth inning work.
Jun 8 2017Givens gave up one hit in a scoreless 11th inning Wednesday to pick up his sixth win of the season in a 9-6 victory over the Pirates.Trey Mancini's three-run homer in the bottom of the inning made Givens a winner once again. The right-hander now has a 16-2 record dating back to 2015 in only 115 big-league appearances, and the support of a powerful Baltimore offense has made him the league's preeminent vulture. Despite the fickle nature of relief wins, don't discount Givens' ability to pick up at least a few more over the next four months.
Jun 1 2017Givens has allowed seven runs in 12.2 innings since May 6.When closer Zach Britton (forearm) went on the disabled list May 6, Givens was set to take on more of a role as a late innings guy in the bullpen. Since then, he has allowed seven runs, but three of them came May 10 in Detroit when he struggled with his control and walked three in one inning of work. Other than his one bad outing, the former second round pick has stayed consistent in his new role and will look to hold on to it until the Orioles' All-Star closer returns later this season.
May 10 2017Givens will take on a larger role in late-inning, high-leverage situations due to the ripple effect caused by closer Zach Britton (forearm) hitting the DL, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Givens has been great this year, much like he's been during his three years of MLB service. Over 15 games and 17 innings, he's posted a strong 2.12 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 17 punch outs. The 27-year-old Givens is definitely worth a roster spot in leagues that value holds.
Apr 26 2017Givens is 3-0 while sporting a 0.84 ERA and 0.94 WHIP through eight relief appearances this season. The O's second-round pick in 2009 has proved in his two previous MLB seasons that he has big-league stuff. Over 96 career appearances at the top level, Givens owns a 2.58 ERA, 1.15 WHIP while notching 144 strikeouts over 115.1 innings. The big right-hander has all the makings of a future closer, but with Zach Britton (forearm) occupying that role in Baltimore -- and Brad Brach in his stead -- Givens won't have a ninth-inning job anytime soon.
Apr 4 2017Givens pitched 1.2 innings and struck out two, but was charged with a blown save after allowing two hits, including a game-tying double in Monday's Opening Day game against Toronto.Coming off a career-best season, Givens was the first reliever called on in 2017. Unfortunately for the right-hander, he matched last year's total for blown saves in the campaign's first game. Givens entered Monday's contest with one out in the top of the sixth inning and quickly retired Kevin Pillar. He froze the next batter, Ezequiel Carrera, on the first two pitches and was just one strike away from escaping the jam before working the count full and eventually surrendering the game-tying hit. Even though the opener stung, Givens should be a reliable source of holds throughout the season.
Mar 11 2017Givens pitched one inning, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three in Friday's WBC opener for Team USA against Columbia.Givens had allowed just one run in four Grapefruit League innings before joining Team USA and getting knocked around Friday night. The 26-year-old appeared in 66 games for the Orioles and struck out 96 hitters over 74.2 innings (11.6 K/9) last year. Givens' debut in the WBC mirrors what owners are likely to get over the course of the MLB season -- great strike out rations while experiencing the occasional implosion. Overall, Givens is a strong middle-relief options in extremely deep leagues.
Feb 10 2017Givens will play for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.Givens, a 26-year-old right-hander, appeared in 66 games and logged 74.2 innings for Baltimore last season. He posted a 3.13 ERA with a strong 11.57 K/9, but that was offset by a poor 4.3 BB/9. Givens' control issues were at their worst prior to the All-Star break, but he did show improvement down the stretch. The WBC will give Givens, who's entering his sophomore campaign, a chance to polish up his control before Opening Day.
Aug 13 2016Givens will get more high-leverage opportunities with Darren O'Day (shoulder) on the disabled list, Rich Dubroff of CSN Mid-Atlantic reports.Givens has pitched well for the Orioles of late, not having allowed a run in eight of his last nine appearances. The 26-year-old has a 3.47 ERA with 67 strikeouts over 53.2 innings this season.
Jul 15 2016Givens (eye) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and picked up the win in Friday's victory over the Rays.Givens had a bout with pink eye prior to the All-Star break, but he was able to get back on the mound Friday in the Orioles' first game back Friday, and should be good to go moving forward. Givens' win Friday was his seventh on the season -- the second most for any Orioles pitcher this season.
Jul 8 2016Givens has conjunctivitis (pink eye), CSN Mid-Atlantic's Rich Dubroff reports. He is also still waiting for his wife to give birth to their child, so paternity leave could also be on tap. If the Orioles are lucky, Givens' pink eye will clear up and his child will be born over the All-Star break so that he can get back in the mix in the bullpen to start the second half.
Jul 5 2016Givens could be placed on the paternity list as his wife is due July 11, CNS Mid-Atlantic reports. The All-Star break begins on the same day Givens' wife is due, so it is possible he misses no time at all. On the other hand, the Orioles could choose to let him go a day or two early, which would put Givens out of action this weekend. Givens threw a scoreless inning against the Dodgers Monday, but he has struggled lately by allowing nine runs in his last eight appearances dating back to June 12.
Jun 2 2016Givens (4-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win against Boston on Thursday. He allowed two hits and struck out three. The 26-year-old righty bounced back nicely after allowing runs in his past two outings. Givens lowered his ERA to 2.17, and he remains a reliable option in Baltimore's bullpen.
May 31 2016Givens is dominating right-handers this season, but left-handers are 14-for-30 against him through Monday's game.Givens allows a .467/.529/.733 slash line against left-handers and a .167/.271/.250 slash line against right-handers with 26 strikeouts in 60 at-bats against the latter. It is a tale of two cities in the handedness of hitters he faces and this could prevent Givens from advancing into a late game role if an opportunity were to arise. If he can settle in against lefties in the future Givens could be a closer in the making.
May 14 2016Givens pitched a scoreless inning, giving up two hits while striking out one in Wednesday's matchup with Minnesota.Givens is off to a solid start to the 2016 campaign as he's pitched to a 2.57 ERA over 14 innings. The 26-year-old is becoming known as a strikeout pitcher as he's increased his 11.40 K/9 ratio he posted in 2015 to 14.14 in 2016. The righty should continue to provide late-inning relief work for the Orioles in 2016 as long as he remains effective.
Apr 22 2016Givens threw a scoreless frame, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out a batter in Baltimore's 4-3 tenth inning victory over Toronto on Wednesday.Givens has been a strikeout machine (16.4 K/9) in the early going but has given up ten hits and four walks in only 7.2 innings. The 6-0 righty's three earned runs came on Apr. 4 and Apr. 6 but since then, he hasn't given up a run in 5.2 innings. The 25-year-old will likely continue to work in late-inning relief situations during his second MLB season with Baltimore.
Mar 6 2016Givens struck out the side on nine pitches in one inning of work in Saturday's Grapefruit League game.Givens now has two scoreless innings and four strikeouts to his name. He could become an elite reliever after bursting on to the scene last season. The Orioles have Zach Britton and Darren O'Day locking things down in the eighth and ninth innings, but Givens looks like he will be used in high leverage situations and he could become a closer one day. Unfortunately, that day does not look like it will come in 2016.
Sep 20 2015Givens allowed a run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in Sunday's loss to the Rays.Though he did not show his best stuff Sunday, Givens has settled in nicely as a useful bullpen arm with the Orioles since being recalled in August. The Orioles will have a number of players leave in free agency this winter, which could open the door for Givens as a setup man as soon as next season.
Aug 10 2015Givens will return from Double-A Bowie in advance of Monday's game, taking the spot of Chaz Roe, who will be placed on the DL, MASN reports. The team is yet to reveal the nature of Roe's injury, but Givens is already with the team in Seattle, indicating that he'll fill the vacant roster spot. Roe was optioned to Bowie just last Thursday, but he'll be allowed to return before the minimum 10 days due to the fact that he's replacing an injured player. Givens has not allowed a run in three appearances (four innings) for the Orioles, and he's 4-2 with a 1.73 ERA in 35 games (57.1 innings) at Bowie.
Aug 6 2015Givens was optioned to Double-A Bowie on Thursday. The Orioles activated right-hander Jason Garcia from the DL on Thursday, so Givens will head back to Double-A to clear a roster spot. Givens, who has been stellar at Double-A this season, has now spent two stints with the Orioles, pitching a cumulative four innings and allowing just one hit while striking out six with no walks.
Jul 31 2015Givens was recalled from Double-A Bowie on Friday. The right-hander may get an extended look in his second major league stint, after posting a 1.79 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 77:16 K:BB and 14 saves in 55.1 innings with Bowie. Givens, 25, profiles as a strong back-end arm in time -- he can dial it in consistently at around 94 mph, and also throws a slider and a changeup -- but he figures to start out in the middle innings.
Jun 25 2015Givens was optioned to Double-A Bowie on Thursday, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports.Givens made one appearance during his brief stint with the Orioles, tossing a scoreless frame against the Red Sox on Wednesday. A promotion to Triple-A could be in the offing for Givens, but for now he'll return to Double-A Bowie, where he has a 1.60 ERA over 39.1 innings of work.
Jun 20 2015Givens had his contract selected by the Orioles on SaturdayThe shortstop-turned-pitcher has been electric at Double-A with a 1.60 ERA over 39.1 innings of work. He has a mid-90s fastball with a three-quarter arm slot delivery. Givens will add right-handed depth to Baltimore's bullpen.
Jun 1 2015Givens has dominated Double-A in the first two months of the season and the Orioles may bypass Triple-A and call him up at some point this summer, according to MASN Sports.Givens has converted 10-of-11 save opportunities and possesses a 1.21 ERA and 0.98 WHIP this season. After being promoted to Double-A midway through the 2014 season, Givens walked 23 and struck out 28 in 25.1 innings. This year, the walks have gone away and the strikeouts are on the rise, as Givens has 42 strikeouts and nine walks in 29.2 innings. Givens was converted from shortstop to reliever in 2013 and there may not be much else he needs to do to be promoted, either to Triple-A or to the Orioles.
Mar 4 2013Givens is being converted from a shortstop to a pitcher, MASN Sports reports.Givens stumbled through the minors, hitting .243 each of the last two years in the lower levels. He did pitch in high school, although the Orioles have not decided whether Givens will be a starter or reliever. It also remains to be seen where he will start the season, but Low-A seems like the most likely landing spot.
