Aug 5 2023Wisler was released by the Tigers on Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler underwhelmed with a 4.40 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 39 appearances at Triple-A Toledo and failed to crack Detroit's big-league roster. The right-hander had some buzz when he broke and he's pitched in parts of eight big-league seasons, but he may very well have exhausted his opportunities in the majors.
Feb 13 2023Wisler signed a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Monday that includes an invitation to big-league spring training, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler will have an opportunity to crack the Tigers' Opening Day roster after spending spring training with the team. The 30-year-old produced a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 35 strikeouts over 44 innings in 39 appearances with the Rays in 2022. Considering the lack of consistent options in Detroit's bullpen, Wisler has a real shot at being a significant contributor in 2023.
Sep 7 2022Wisler rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday and was released by the Rays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler lost his spot on the Rays' 40-man roster Wednesday, and he'll choose to test free agency after going unclaimed on waivers rather than remaining in the organization. The right-hander has posted a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 44 innings over 39 appearances (five starts) for Tampa Bay this year, but he won't be eligible for postseason play if he lands a contract elsewhere.
Sep 5 2022The Rays designated Wisler for assignment Monday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was activated from the 15-day injured list Thursday following a one month absence with a neck strain, but he will no longer have a spot on the Rays' 40-man roster after being DFA'd Monday. The reliever has produced a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 35 strikeouts over 44 innings in 39 appearances with Tampa Bay this season. Wisler will likely get claimed off waivers by a contender in need of an additional bullpen arm.
Sep 1 2022Wisler (neck) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was sidelined since July 27 due to a neck strain, but he began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham last week. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one in 3.2 innings over four rehab appearances and will rejoin the major-league bullpen after missing just over a month. He's posted a 2.36 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 42 innings over 38 appearances (five starts) for the Rays this year.
Aug 22 2022Wisler (neck) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler threw a bullpen session Saturday and has been cleared to return to game action in the minors. He's been sidelined since July 27 due to a neck strain, but it's possible that he rejoins the Rays' rotation sometime in late August or early September.
Aug 20 2022Wisler (neck) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler has been sidelined since July 27 and is ramping up his activity for the first time since landing on the injured list. If all goes well with his session Saturday, Wisler could throw live batting practice as early as Monday. It's unclear if he will require a rehab assignment, but a return in early September appears realistic.
Jul 27 2022Tampa Bay placed Wisler on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to a strained neck, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler is the 17th player on the Rays roster who currently resides on the IL, matching a team record for the most at one time. His IL stint is backdated to Sunday, so Wisler will be eligible to return as soon as Aug. 9. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Wisler is scheduled to meet with a specialist Thursday, which could shed more light on a potential return timetable.
Jul 11 2022Wisler will serve as the opener during Monday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler will serve in an opening role for the fifth time this season during Monday's matchup, while Josh Fleming is expected to serve as the primary pitcher. Over his last four appearances, Wisler has allowed a run (zero earned) on no hits and two walks while striking out three in 3.1 innings.
Jun 30 2022Wisler opened in Thursday's 4-1 loss in Toronto, striking out one and walking one in one inning. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler tossed 14 pitches and only faced three batters as he erased a leadoff single with a groundball double play. It was his fourth time opening this season and the first time since May 6. He's compiled a solid 2.75 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB in 36 innings across 32 appearances.
Jun 2 2022Wisler struck out one in a scoreless 11th inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was inserted into a tricky save situation, as he was tasked with protecting a one-run lead in extra innings. However, he didn't allow the runner on second base to advance in the clean frame and picked up his first save of the season. Wisler has maintained a 2.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with a 20:7 K:BB across 25.2 innings to begin the campaign, though his save came after each of J.P. Feyereisen, Brooks Raley and Colin Poche had entered the game.
May 21 2022Wisler allowed two runs (one earned) on two walks and a hit to blow the save Friday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler entered the game in the 10th inning and was tasked with protecting a two-run lead. However, he walked the first two batters he faced to load the bases and allowed a two-RBI single. Brooks Raley figures to pick up the majority of save chances if Andrew Kittredge (back) misses time moving forward, though Wisler could also get work in higher-leverage spots. Despite the stumble Friday, Wisler has a 2.61 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 15:6 K:BB across 20.2 innings on the season.
May 6 2022Wisler allowed two runs on two hits in two innings during Friday's win over the Mariners. He struck out two batters and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler acted as the opener Friday and promptly served up a two-run shot to Eugenio Suarez in the first inning. It was his first time allowing more than one earned run in an appearance this season and he's now sporting a 2.57 ERA through 14 frames. Wisler will likely continue getting occasional starts while primarily working out of the bullpen.
Apr 26 2022Wisler served as the opener and allowed two hits in two scoreless innings, adding two strikeouts in an 8-4 loss Tuesday against Seattle. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler pitched a perfect first inning and, after allowing consecutive singles, retired the final three batters of the second. The journeyman opened for the second time this season and has a 1.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 9.1 innings while striking out nearly a batter an inning. Those numbers are similar to his overall results since 2020 when he's sporting a 2.70 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 83.1 innings.
Apr 25 2022Wisler will open Tuesday's game against Seattle, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was a starter early in his career, so being the first pitcher on the mound shouldn't be uncomfortable for him. He's already filled the opener role once this season, recording five outs last Tuesday against the Cubs. He hasn't thrown more than two innings since 2020, so don't expect him to pitch particularly deep in Tuesday's game. Josh Fleming will handle the bulk of the innings behind him.
Apr 18 2022Wisler will serve as the opener in Tuesday's game against the Cubs, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler has been busy early in the season, as he's made five appearances and covered 4.2 innings. While he's put together an impressive 1.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP to go along with a 6:1 K:BB, his lack of extended outings indicates that he is unlikely to work more than two frames Tuesday. Josh Fleming is expected to enter the game after Wisler and work multiple innings.
Mar 22 2022Wisler avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.16 million contract with the Rays, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After posting mediocre numbers as a starter early in his career, Wisler has emerged as a reliable reliever in recent seasons. Over the last two years, he's struck out 32.1 percent of opposing batters en route to a 2.80 ERA. That could make him a closer candidate on many teams, but the Rays' deep and flexible bullpen makes him tough to project for more than a handful of saves.
Oct 11 2021Wisler (finger) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen Sunday in the Rays' 6-4 loss to the Red Sox in the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays expressed some concern after Wisler appeared to aggravate a right middle finger injury in his appearance in Game 2 on Friday, but his ability to pitch effectively two days later seemingly clears up any concern about his health. Wisler needed only seven pitches to record his four outs.
Oct 9 2021Wisler aggravated his right middle finger injury in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Red Sox on Friday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler made a relief appearance Friday and allowed two runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one in one inning. The right-hander required two stints on the injured list during the second half of the season due to his finger injury, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be able to remain on the ALDS roster.
Oct 2 2021Wisler, who was activated from the injured list Thursday and fired a scoreless eighth inning during which he allowed a hit in a loss to the Astros that same night, came out of the outing with no setbacks on his previously swollen right middle finger, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. "Very encouraged. Wasn't totally sure what it was going to look like, how he was going to feel," manager Kevin Cash said. "He said he felt really good, no issues, so that's just a huge sign for us." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler allowed a single to Yordan Alvarez but retired the other three batters he faced, and just as important, threw his slider on 10 of his 11 pitches. The relevance of that nugget is that Wisler believes spinning breaking balls too often led to the swelling in the first place, but the right-hander feels the combination of ongoing diligent treatment and the frequent off days built into a playoff schedule will allow him to get through the Rays' postseason run without any issues.
Sep 30 2021Wisler (finger) was reinstated from the injured list Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler has made just a single major-league appearances since Aug. 15, as he returned from a trip to the injured list for middle finger inflammation in early September only to head right back to the injured list. He's evidently feeling better now and will have a few days to prove to the Rays that he's healthy and effective enough for a spot on the playoff roster. Ryan Sherriff was optioned to clear a spot in the bullpen.
Sep 29 2021Wisler (finger) was able to throw off flat ground Tuesday and Wednesday without issue, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler has now been able to remain free of setbacks for 10 days during his recovery from the finger injury on his throwing hand. The right-hander was described as definitely "going in the right direction" by manager Kevin Cash on Wednesday, and it remains to be seen if he'll be activated in time to get some work in before the conclusion of the regular season.
Sep 26 2021Wisler (finger) threw a bullpen session Sunday without setbacks, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was able to throw a pair of bullpens during the weekend series against the Marlins overall and continues to demonstrate he could be over his finger issue. If all continues well, Wisler could return from the injured list for the Rays' final road trip of the season during the coming week without the need for a rehab assignment.
Sep 15 2021Wisler underwent imaging Tuesday that confirmed no additional damage to his injured finger, but he'll remain shut down from throwing "for a little bit" according to manager Kevin Cash, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has been dealing with the finger issue since Aug. 13, when he first went on the injured list as a result of it. His Sept. 8 return lasted all of five pitches before a flare-up occurred, leaving Wisler's availability for the remainder of the regular season up in the air despite Tuesday's encouraging news.
Sep 10 2021Wisler (finger) isn't expected to throw for at least 10 days, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was placed on the injured list Wednesday, and he'll see a hand specialist Friday to determine the extent of his injury. The team's doctors are hopeful that the right-hander's shutdown will allow time for his inflammation to subside. Since Wisler will need time to build back up after his pause, he's slated to miss more than the minimum of 10 days.
Sep 8 2021Wisler's right middle finger remained bothersome Wednesday, and he'll return to the injured list, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was activated from the injured list earlier in the day after missing about three weeks with inflammation in his right middle finger, but the issue resurfaced and he was removed after facing one batter. It's unclear if the injury is worse this time around, but he'll be sidelined for at least the next 10 days once the IL move becomes official.
Sep 6 2021Rays manager Kevin Cash said Wisler (finger) will likely be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday or Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler looks poised to rejoin the Rays for the first time since mid-August after he checked out fine following his second rehab appearance at Triple-A Durham on Sunday, when he struck out the side over his lone inning of work. The 28-year-old should immediately slot back into a high-leverage relief role for the Rays once formally reinstated.
Sep 5 2021Wisler (finger) fired a scoreless sixth inning in Triple-A Durham's loss to Jacksonville on Sunday, allowing a hit and recording three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler threw 19 pitches (13 strikes) in the impressive appearance, which came in what was a significant bump up in competition for the right-hander. Wisler had tossed a perfect frame for the Rays' rookie-level Florida Complex League squad Monday, and given his strong form Sunday at the highest level of the minors, he could be deemed ready for activation during the three-game set against the Red Sox that begins Monday.
Sep 1 2021Wisler (finger) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday before facing hitters Sunday at the Rays' spring facility in Port Charlotte, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After striking out the side in scoreless inning during his rehab appearance Monday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League, Wisler appeared to be a candidate to return from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, when the Rays' roster expanded from 26 to 28 men. Evidently, the Rays felt Wisler needed some more time to work back from the hand issue, so he'll remain on the shelf through at least the end of the week. If all goes well in Sunday's throwing session, Wisler could make his return from the IL early next week.
Aug 30 2021Wisler (finger) struck out three over a perfect inning during his rehab appearance Monday at the rookie-level Florida Complex League, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On the heels of the strong rehab outing, Wisler could be ready to make his return from the 10-day injured list by the middle of the week. When healthy this season, Wisler has been a trusted late-inning option for the Rays. Since coming over in a mid-June trade from the Giants, Wisler has picked up one save and seven holds while submitting a 1.98 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in 27.1 innings.
Aug 25 2021Wisler (finger) isn't expected to return from the 10-day injured list during the Rays' upcoming series in Baltimore this weekend, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to manager Kevin Cash, Wisler was still feeling some discomfort in the fingers on his pitching hand after a 25-pitch bullpen session over the weekend, so the Rays are leaning toward giving the 28-year-old more time to heal up. The setback doesn't seem to be a significant one for Wisler, who has turned in a 3.66 ERA and 60:10 K:BB In 46.2 innings on the season.
Aug 23 2021Wisler (finger) threw off a mound Sunday and is likely to be activated from the injured list when first eligible Friday, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran reliever "is pretty optimistic that he's in a good spot" according to manager Kevin Cash, and he's likely to join the Rays on their road trip that begins Tuesday in Philadelphia. That would leave him poised to be immediately available for activation Friday, when he'd look to resume a strong stretch of pitching that saw him allow just a 1.08 ERA and 0.84 WHIP over the 8.1 innings covering his last seven appearances before going on the shelf.
Aug 16 2021Wisler was placed on the 10-day injured list with right middle finger inflammation Monday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was charged with the loss Sunday when he allowed an unearned run on a hit in a third of an inning against the Twins. His finger didn't feel right when he woke up Monday, but manager Kevin Cash is optimistic that the right-hander will be able to return after spending the minimum of 10 days on the injured list, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Aug 1 2021Wisler saved Sunday's 3-2 victory over Boston, allowing two hits with one strikeout in the ninth inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After retiring the first two Red Sox in the ninth, Wisler allowed two singles but induced a J.D. Martinez flyout to end the game and secure his third career save. It's worth noting that manager Kevin Cash turned to Wisler, and not Andrew Kittredge, for Tampa Bay's first save following incumbent closer Diego Castillo's shipment to Seattle, though Kittredge pitched Saturday and recorded the win. Cash has been known to use a committee approach to finish games and Wisler's deployment Sunday proves he's a member of that group at the very least.
Jul 25 2021Wisler (3-4) took the loss Sunday versus Cleveland. He allowed two runs on two hits and a hit batter in one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler melted down with a one-run lead, and by the time he exited, Tampa Bay was down a run. The right-hander has mostly been solid since he joined the Rays in a trade from the Giants in June, but he's now allowed runs in each of his last three appearances. Overall, the reliever owns a 4.23 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 52:9 K:BB with seven holds and three blown saves across 38.1 innings.
Jul 23 2021Wisler (3-3) earned the win in relief Friday against Cleveland after allowing one run on two hits while fanning four across two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler pitched the seventh and eighth innings, and he didn't have problems finding the strike zone after tossing 23 of his 35 offerings for strikes. The right-hander has been pitching lights out over the last couple of weeks, allowing just three earned runs across his last 17 appearances (19 innings) and posting an excellent 1.59 ERA in that stretch.
Jul 17 2021Wisler (2-3) tossed two scoreless innings Friday against Atlanta, allowing just one hit and striking out three as he picked up the win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler entered in the eighth with the game knotted at six and kept it that way after firing two shutout innings. The Rays would end up sealing the game in extra innings which awarded him with his first win since May 4. Wisler had a rough go early on in the season but has allowed just two runs over 18.2 innings dating back to May 20. Overall, the 28-year-old has a 3.74 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 45:9 K:BB over 33.2 innings this year and should typically remain in a middle-innings role with the Rays having quite a few talented arms in their bullpen.
Jul 11 2021Wisler, who secured his fourth hold in a win over the Blue Jays on Saturday, has allowed just one earned run and owns an 11.7 K/9 over the 12.1 innings covering his 12 appearances with the Rays since being traded from the Giants on June 11. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran's versatility -- he'd logged 61 big-league starts coming into this season -- makes him a natural middle-inning option, and Wisler has risen to the high standard of the Rays bullpen during his time with the club. Wisler has seven holds overall on the season when factoring in his San Francisco stint, and he's encouragingly improved somewhat in terms of keeping the ball in the park since arriving in Tampa; Wisler gave up four home runs over 19.1 innings with the Giants, but he's yielded just two, albeit in seven fewer frames, since the trade.
Jun 28 2021Wisler (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Angels on Sunday, allowing an earned run on one hit and recording a strikeout over one inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander immediately faltered in the task of preserving a 4-4 tie, allowing a solo home run to the first batter he faced, Phil Gosselin. Wisler was able to get through the rest of the frame unscathed, but the loss stuck since the Rays never regained a lead. The earned run marked the first allowed by Wisler across eight appearances with the Rays.
Jun 14 2021Wisler secured his first hold in a win over the Orioles on Sunday, firing a perfect seventh inning during which he recorded a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler got eight of an efficient 12 pitches into the strike zone during his Rays debut, which was a welcome change from the the struggles that had led to a 6.05 ERA across 19.1 innings with the Giants before Friday's trade. The veteran swingman sports the type of versatile profile that could make him a natural fit for a team that's known to be creative with how it deploys pitchers capable of working multiple innings.
Jun 11 2021Wisler was traded from the Giants to the Rays along with cash considerations Friday with Michael Plassmeyer heading the other way, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays have a well-earned reputation for getting the most out of previously mediocre pitchers, so there's certainly a possibility Wisler shows something new going forward. There's reason to believe he's far better than the 6.05 ERA he's produced in 21 relief appearances so far this season, as his excellent combination of a 31.7 percent strikeout rate and 7.3 percent walk rate should be enough to offset a very low 28.0 percent groundball rate. Even if the Rays do coax something new out of him, however, he's unlikely to get many (if any) save chances, limiting his fantasy appeal.
Jun 9 2021Wisler was designated for assignment by the Giants on Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler had a somewhat rocky start to the season, as he had a 1-2 record and recorded a 6.05 ERA in 19 innings across 21 relief appearances. He'll now be removed from the 40-man roster as part of a shuffle to make room for Sam Long and James Sherfy, whose contracts were selected Wednesday.
May 27 2021Wisler was reinstated from the bereavement list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was away from the team for a few days, but will now return to the team's bullpen. He has a poor 6.75 ERA through 16 innings this season, but his 20:4 K:BB suggests better results could be on the way. Sam Selman was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in the corresponding move.
May 23 2021Wisler was placed on the bereavement list Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler will step away from the team for a few days to attend funeral services for his grandmother, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Sam Selman was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.
May 16 2021Wisler pitched a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout to earn a hold in Sunday's 4-1 win over Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has strung together 5.1 scoreless innings over his last four appearances. Wisler was inconsistent to start the year, which is reflected in his 6.28 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 14.1 innings. He's also collected a 1-2 record, two holds and a blown save in 16 appearances, but his recent success could lead to more high-leverage assignments.
May 4 2021Wisler (1-2) pitched 1.2 perfect innings with one strikeout and was credited with the win in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader versus Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler needed only 21 pitches in a solid outing. He had given up three runs over his last two appearances before turning in a clean performance Tuesday. The 28-year-old right-hander has an 8.44 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB across nine innings. He's picked up two holds and a blown save, but he's unlikely to work in too many high-leverage scenarios given his poor start to 2021.
Apr 23 2021Wisler pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one walk and one strikeout to earn a hold in Thursday's 3-0 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a shaky start to the season, Wisler has strung together four scoreless outings. He's allowed just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts over his last 3.1 innings. The 28-year-old right-hander likely has some work to do if he's going to see high-leverage roles later in the year. He has a 9.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 0-2 record, two holds and a blown save in 10 appearances spanning seven innings.
Apr 20 2021Wisler pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout and earned a hold in Monday's 2-0 win over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler has had his share of struggles this season, as Monday's outing was the first time in eight appearances that he managed to pitch a full inning without allowing a baserunner. The 28-year-old is 0-2 with a 12.60 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB across five innings this season.
Apr 16 2021Wisler (0-2) was tagged with the loss Friday against Miami after allowing a giving up a run and a walk while fanning one across 1.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler didn't have problems retiring the three batters he faced in the seventh inning, but he walked Jose Aguilar with one out before departing the game and then Wandy Peralta would give up a three-run homer to Starling Marte, meaning Aguilar's run was blamed on Wisler. The right-hander continues to struggle in the first weeks of the season, giving up runs in four of his six outings and posting a ballooned 17.18 ERA across 3.2 innings thus far.
Apr 7 2021Wisler (0-1) allowed two runs on one hit and a walk while lasting just a third of an inning as he was handed the loss in Tuesday's game against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler came on to begin the seventh and was unable to preserve a 1-1 tie. The 28-year-old got the first out before walking the next batter and then serving up a two-run homer to Victor Caratini before being yanked from the game. Wisler has had a nightmarish start to the season, allowing six runs in 1.2 innings en route to a 32.40 ERA.
Apr 6 2021Wisler allowed one run on two hits over two-thirds of an inning in Monday's 3-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was charged with a blown save, as he was unable to protect a one-run lead in the sixth inning. Caleb Baragar relieved Wisler to finish the frame and earned the win after the Giants pulled ahead in the seventh. The 28-year-old Wisler has given up four earned runs in 1.1 innings spanning three appearances -- a brutal start to his first year as a Giant. Expect the right-hander to see lower-leverage assignments until he corrects course. He had a 1.07 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 25.1 innings with the Twins last year, but his 3.34 FIP suggests that he didn't pitch quite as well as those numbers would indicate.
Dec 8 2020Wisler agreed to a one-year, $1.15 million contract with the Giants on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler was a surprise non-tender by the Twins last week. He threw 83 percent sliders last season with astonishing results, finishing with a 1.07 ERA, 3.35 FIP, 1.14 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB in 25.1 innings. Tyler Rogers is the only healthy Giants reliever who had any success in the late innings last season, so Wisler could find his way to high-leverage work, depending who else the Giants sign this offseason.
Dec 2 2020Wisler was non-tendered by the Twins on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move is a bit of a surprise, as the right-hander had an impressive 2020 campaign with a 1.07 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB over 25.1 innings. Wisler enters free agency coming off the best season of his career.
Sep 5 2020Wisler threw two scoreless, hitless innings as the opener in Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader between the Twins and Tigers. He allowed one walk and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Make it five straight scoreless appearances for Wisler; he has a 0.93 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in that stretch (8.2 innings). The right-hander is putting together his best MLB season by a wide margin. The Twins have another doubleheader next week, so Wisler could get another opportunity to open before transitioning back to a traditional bullpen role.
Sep 4 2020Wisler will be the opener for the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Tigers, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler has been a starter in the past, but he hasn't thrown more than 2.2 innings in any of his 10 appearances this season, so he's unlikely to pitch too deep into this contest. It's not yet clear who will follow him.
Sep 1 2020Wisler earned the save against the White Sox on Tuesday, pitching a perfect ninth inning and striking out a pair. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With usual closer Taylor Rogers one day removed from a 33-pitch outing and in the midst of a shaky four-game stretch, the Twins summoned Wisler from the bullpen to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning. The right-hander was up to the task, throwing 11 of 14 pitches for strikes and setting the White Sox down in order. The save was the second of Wisler's career and his first since 2016. The 27-year-old is enjoying a resurgent season in Minnesota, posting a 1.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 21:10 K:BB over 16.2 innings. Rogers figures to continue as the team's closer, however, so Wisler's fantasy value will be minimal unless he begins receiving more high-leverage opportunities.
Aug 29 2020Wisler gave up one hit and walked three batters over 1.2 scoreless innings as the opener in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Tigers. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander threw only 22 of 41 pitches for strikes before exiting the game, but despite putting runners in scoring position in both his frames, Wisler was able to emerge unscathed. He now sports a 1.15 ERA through 15.2 innings for the Twins, but his 19:10 K:BB highlights his control issues. With Michael Pineda (suspension) potentially joining the rotation next week, Wisler will likely return to the bullpen.
Aug 28 2020Friday's doubleheader against the Tigers was rained out, so Wisler may not work as an opener this weekend, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Twins can have Randy Dobnak start Saturday on extra rest while Kenta Maeda can start the second game on normal rest, so Wisler should return to a bullpen role in the short term.
Aug 23 2020Wisler tossed two scoreless innings as the opener in Sunday's win over the Royals, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler did his job as the opener Sunday, keeping the Royals off the board in his two innings pitched. Wisler has ERA down to an outstanding 1.29 on the season and the right-hander could see more chances to open going forward.
Aug 22 2020Wisler will serve as the opener Sunday against the Royals, Audra Martin of FOX Sports North reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old delivered two scoreless frames as the opener last Monday against the Royals, and he'll get the chance to replicate that performance in Sunday's series finale. Wisler has been lights out to begin the season with a 1.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB through 12 innings. The Twins haven't announced who may follow him, but Devin Smeltzer is a likely candidate to cover multiple innings.
Aug 16 2020Wisler is scheduled to serve as the Twins' opening pitcher in Monday's game against the Royals, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler hasn't covered more than 2.2 innings or tossed more than 39 pitches in any of his six appearances out of the bullpen this season, so don't expect him to push very far past those limits in Monday's start. Devin Smeltzer, Lewis Thorpe and Jorge Alcala are all candidates to cover multiple innings behind Wisler, but the Twins haven't formally appointed a primary pitcher for Monday.
Jul 23 2020Wisler has made Minnesota's 30-man Opening Day roster, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler had a 5.62 ERA last season between the Padres and Mariners, but had a 4.24 FIP and a 11.1 K/9. His strikeout ability will put him in the mix for a middle relief role.
Feb 24 2020Wisler threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in Monday's spring training win over Boston. He appears to have a leg up on a spot in the bullpen, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wisler had a 5.62 ERA last season between the Padres and Mariners, but had a 4.24 FIP and a 11.1 K/9. His strikeout ability could land him a spot in middle relief, but he faces competition from Zack Littell, Cody Stashak, Cory Gearrin, Sean Poppen, Blaine Hardy and Jorge Alcala for the final three spots in the bullpen. Fernando Romero's absence from spring training due to visa issues does improve Wisler's odds that he'll begin the season in Minnesota.
Oct 29 2019Wisler was claimed off waivers by the Twins on Tuesday, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old recorded a 5.61 ERA with a 63:16 K:BB in 51.1 innings pitched last season between the Padres and Mariners, but was designated for assignment by the Mariners as they clear roster space. Wisler will provide some versatility to the Twins' pitching staff, as he has experience as a starter and reliever in the majors.
Sep 6 2019Wisler (1-2) was charged with the loss in an extra-innings defeat at the hands of the Astros on Thursday, allowing a game-winning two-run home run and a walk while also recording a strikeout over one-third of an inning. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Tasked with preserving a 9-9 tie upon entering in the bottom of the 13th inning, Wisler promptly issued a leadoff walk to Jake Marisnick before getting a swinging strikeout of Jose Altuve. However, Michael Brantley subsequently squared up on Wisler's first offering, a 92 mph fastball, and sent it 409 feet to right field to end the marathon. September hasn't been kind to Wisler thus far, as he's allowed four earned runs over 1.2 innings across a pair of appearances, despite Brantley's homer qualifying as the only hit the right-handed reliever has allowed.
Aug 26 2019Wisler will serve as the opener Monday against the Yankees, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Aug 23 2019Wisler (1-0) allowed a hit and struck out one over two-thirds of an inning, earning in the win in Friday's 7-4 win over the Blue Jays.
Aug 21 2019Wisler served as the opener in a win over the Rays on Tuesday, firing a scoreless first inning during which he allowed a hit and issued a walk.
Aug 20 2019Wisler will serve as the opener for Tuesday's game against the Rays, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Aug 16 2019Wisler struck out two in a scoreless inning Friday night against the Blue Jays.
Aug 15 2019Wisler will serve as the Mariners' opening pitcher for Thursday's game against the Tigers, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Aug 10 2019Wisler pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in Saturday's 5-4 loss to the Rays.
Aug 6 2019Wisler will open Tuesday's game against the Padres, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
Jul 29 2019Wisler served as the opener in Sunday's extra-inning win over the Tigers, firing two perfect innings during which he recorded two strikeouts.

Jun 28 2018The Braves recalled Wisler from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.Wisler was optioned to Triple-A after being recalled only a day prior, and once again returns to the Braves with Brandon McCarthy (knee) headed to the disabled list. The 25-year-old has a 4.32 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in six appearances -- including three starts -- making him a potential option for a spot start in McCarthy's absence, but he is more likely to be a long-relief option out of the bullpen.
Jun 26 2018The Braves recalled Wisler from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday, according to 680 The Fan.Wisler will take the roster spot of Lucas Sims, who was sent to Gwinnett in the corresponding move. Wisler held his own while making three starts for the big club earlier this year, but the Braves' rotation is currently filled out, so he will work in relief this time around.
May 30 2018Wisler was sent to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday.Wisler will head back to the minor leagues after being recalled Friday. He appeared in two games during his latest big-league stint, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four.
May 25 2018The Braves recalled Wisler from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Wisler was sent to Triple-A following his start against the Marlins last Friday and did not make an appearance during the brief stretch in the minors. The 25-year-old has a 3.63 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in three starts for the Braves this year but will be available out of the bullpen for this stint in the majors.
May 19 2018Wisler (1-1) struck out five and walked two in Friday's loss to the Marlins, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings.Wisler pitched decently Friday, shutting out the Marlins through five innings until allowing a couple run-scoring extra-base hits in the sixth. In three starts, Wisler has a 3.63 ERA and 1.21 WHIP while holding opponents to a .246 batting average. The young righty would be in line for a road start against the Phillies next week, but that may depend on whether or not starter Mike Soroka returns from the disabled list to take Wisler's spot.
May 18 2018Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett and will start Friday against the Marlins.Wisler made a pair of starts for the Braves earlier in the season, allowing five runs in 12 innings, striking out eight while walking three. Through 310 career big-league innings, his ERA sits at 5.20. Max Fried was sent down to Gwinnett in a corresponding move.
Apr 25 2018Wisler didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Reds, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks over five innings. He failed to strike out a batter. The right-hander loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning, and while he was able to escape that jam unscathed, it set the tone for the rest of his night. Wisler generated only four swinging strikes among his 83 pitches, and with an off-day coming Monday for the Braves, he may not get another start before Luiz Gohara (ankle) is ready to come off the disabled list.
Apr 20 2018Manager Brian Snitker said that Wisler will remain in the major-league rotation for at least one more turn, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Wisler pitched well in his season debut, allowing just one run while striking out eight and walking none in seven innings of work. As a result, he was rewarded with another start with Atlanta. His career numbers aren't great however, so it's worth being a bit wary of his performance moving forward. Wisler will face off with the Reds in his next scheduled start Tuesday.
Apr 19 2018Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett and will start Thursday's game against the Mets.Wisler is set to make his 2018 big-league debut in place of the injured Anibal Sanchez, who was placed on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain Wednesday. The 25-year-old owns a solid 2.25 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 11:1 K:BB across two starts (12 innings) with Gwinnett, though he struggled to an 8.35 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 20 appearances (32.1 innings) with the big club in 2017. He'll face Matt Harvey and a difficult Mets team.
Apr 19 2018Wisler (1-0) picked up the win against the Mets on Thursday, giving up just one earned run on two hits over seven innings, striking out eight and walking none in Atlanta's 12-4 victory. With Anibal Sanchez hitting the disabled list due to a hamstring injury, Wisler was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill in and he shined in his first big-league appearance of 2018, with a fifth-inning solo home run by Todd Frazier representing the only blemish on an otherwise stellar outing. The strong showing means Wisler probably earned the chance to continue to fill the spot in Atlanta's rotation with Sanchez out. However, he has a 5.26 ERA in 298 career big-league innings, including an 8.35 mark in 32.1 innings last year, so just be aware of that before considering him as a streaming option.
Mar 12 2018Wisler got tagged for four runs on five hits and two walks over three innings while striking out two in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers. The 25-year-old picked a bad time for a bad start, as Luiz Gohara's ankle injury throws Wisler back into the mix for the fifth starter spot to begin the season. He's still got time this spring to overtake Scott Kazmir for the job, but given Wisler's 5.26 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 298 career big-league innings, his fantasy ceiling appears low even if he does break camp in the rotation.
Mar 2 2018Wisler tossed three scoreless innings Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out two in a split-squad game against the Nationals. While the 25-year-old has been solid at Triple-A Gwinnett over the last few seasons, he hasn't seen the same success in the majors, posting a 5.26 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 209:102 K:BB in 298 career innings with the Braves. Wisler could put himself back in the rotation mix with a great spring, making Thursday's outing intriguing, but given the younger arms in the organization pressing for spots, he's more likely to find a role in the big-league bullpen as a long man.
Aug 19 2017Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday.Luke Jackson was sent to the disabled list with a shoulder strain, so Wisler was summoned back to the big club to take his place on the roster and in the bullpen. The 24-year-old has a 2.84 ERA and 4:2 K:BB in 6.1 innings of relief with Gwinnett since being shifted to the bullpen. He has the stuff to become an effective late-inning reliever, so he'll be worth keeping an eye on in his new role.
Aug 4 2017Wisler will transition to the bullpen at Triple-A Gwinnett, Gabriel Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Despite some flashes of success as a starter in the minors, a 5.12 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 199:98 K:BB and 1.4 HR/9 in 284.2 career big-league innings have prompted the Braves to re-evaluate whether Wisler has a place in their future rotation, especially considering the sheer volume of top-shelf pitching prospects moving quickly up the ladder behind him. The 24-year-old righty has the stuff to become an effective late-inning reliever, and he'll likely get a month at Triple-A to acclimate to his new role before getting called back up in September.
Jul 26 2017Wisler was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett following Tuesday's game.Wisler, who was recalled by the Braves on Monday, had a short and difficult stint in the big leagues, as he allowed four earned runs on five hits over two innings in Monday's blowout loss to Arizona. The right-hander now owns an 8.53 ERA over 19 innings in the majors this season and will need to turn things around at Gwinnett if he hopes to see similar opportunities in the future. Aaron Blair, the scheduled starter for Wednesday's game, was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jul 24 2017Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday. With Jaime Garcia being dealt to the Twins, the Braves needed some pitching depth at the major-league level. Wisler will re-emerge in Atlanta, although his stay may be brief if he pitches like his 7.41 ERA suggests he will.
Jul 5 2017Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday.Wisler was summoned back to the big club to offer bullpen reinforcements after Arodys Vizcaino was placed on the DL with a finger strain. The 24-year-old owns a 7.00 ERA and 3:3 K:BB through nine innings out of the Braves' bullpen this season. He has strictly served as a starter this season for Gwinnett, so he'll provide some length as a reliever before ultimately returning to Triple-A to continue being developed as a starter.
Jun 10 2017Wisler (0-1) gave up four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven over six innings in a loss to the Mets in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. It wasn't a disastrous outing by any means -- after all, Wisler held the Mets scoreless through four -- but he was still easily outdueled by Steven Matz on the other side. Added as the 26th man for the twin bill, Wisler figures to head right back down to Triple-A Gwinnett. He may pitch out of the bullpen upon his eventual return, as he did during his prior stints with the big club this season.
May 25 2017Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.Wisler got knocked around during his last stint in the big leagues, posting seven earned runs across two appearances, which eventually led to a demotion. The right-hander will now return to the Braves, but without a clear rotation spot open, Wisler seems destined for long relief.
Apr 23 2017Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.Wisler was in competition for the team's final starting rotation spot during spring training, but was ultimately beat out by Mike Foltynewicz. In three starts with Triple-A Gwinnett, the 24-year-old posted a 3.50 ERA and an 11:4 K:BB ratio over 18 innings. He'll round out the back-end of the Braves' bullpen.
Mar 18 2017Wisler allowed just one hit and struck out two over four shutout innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros.Facing a Houston split-squad lineup that included George Springer, Brian McCann and Yulieski Gurriel, Wisler matched Dallas Keuchel goose egg for goose egg before exiting the game. With Mike Foltynewicz pitching well this spring, Wisler has basically no chance of breaking camp as the Braves' fifth starter, but if he continues shining over the next couple of weeks he could win a long relief spot in the bullpen.
Mar 2 2017Wisler came on in relief of Jaime Garcia during Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees and coughed up three runs on five hits in two innings. All three runs crossed the plate in the third inning, but Wisler was able to settle down after that. The 24-year-old will begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett and could be falling behind Aaron Blair in the picking order for a potential midseason call-up, but a strong campaign at Gwinnett will still keep Wisler in the Braves' rotation plans for 2018 and beyond.
Feb 7 2017Wisler will likely begin the season at Triple-A Gwinnett after the Braves re-stocked their rotation with veteran arms this offseason, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey and Jaime Garcia will all slot in behind Julio Teheran in the rebuilt rotation, with Mike Foltynewicz well ahead of Wisler in the battle for the fifth spot. The 24-year-old has had a rough start to his big league career, posting a 4.88 ERA through his first 265.2 innings over the last two years, and he'll need to put together a strong Triple-A campaign to stay in the club's future plans, given the wealth of prospect talent coming up through the organization behind him.
Sep 30 2016Wisler (7-13) allowed five runs on nine hits, including three home runs in a loss to the Tigers on Friday. He also struck out three and walked two.The right-hander tossed up three homers in the first three frames, including two to Miguel Cabrera. Wisler had been doing a much better job of keeping the ball in the park, but the three homers Friday means he finishes the year having allowed 26 bombs. His ERA will also rise to an even 5.00, which is a shame because Wisler pitched much better in his last two starts and was likely hoping to carry that momentum into the offseason.
Sep 23 2016Wisler didn't factor into the decision against the Marlins on Friday, giving up two earned runs on two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five. After getting hammered for six runs on 10 hits the last time he saw this Marlins squad on Sep. 13, Wisler bounced back with his third quality start in the last five trips to the mound. The 24-year-old has given up two earned runs or less in four of those outings as well and hasn't surrendered a homer since Aug. 31 against the Padres. He'll look to close out the season in strong form when he takes on the Phillies next Thursday.
Sep 13 2016Wisler (6-12) was hammered for six runs on 10 hits and two walks in Tuesday's loss to the Marlins. For the first time in his 23 starts this season, he failed to notch a strikeout. After a terrible July (1-4 with an 8.89 ERA), Wisler appeared to be back on track in late August when he was recalled from a stint at Triple-A Gwinnett. He was then sidelined by side soreness for a couple of weeks before getting back on the hill Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the 24-year-old Wisler, his return resembled the pitcher we saw in July rather than August. He'll look to rebound in his next start Monday on the road against the Mets.
Sep 13 2016Wisler (side) has been confirmed as the starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Marlins.Wisler's last start was skipped due to soreness in his side, but that will be the extent of his absence, as he will be back on the mound Tuesday night. Wisler threw arguably his best two outings of the season his last two times out and will look to pick up where he left off.
Sep 12 2016Wisler (side) is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Marlins, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Following two successful bullpen sessions, the Braves decided that Wisler is healthy enough to slot back into the rotation after missing one turn. The 24-year-old will be facing a Marlins team that tallied three runs on ten hits against him the last time he faced them.
Sep 10 2016Wisler (side soreness) hopes to start Tuesday at home against the Marlins, 680 The Fan's Kevin McAlpin reports. He said Saturday that he is pain free after throwing a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday. He will throw another bullpen session Sunday, and if that goes well, it sounds like he'll slot back into the Braves' rotation Tuesday.
Sep 3 2016Wisler (side soreness) likely won't start until next weekend at the earliest, 680 The Fan's Kevin McAlpin reports. There was thought to be a chance that he would start Monday, but that has essentially been ruled out at this point. Wisler said he hopes to only miss one start, meaning he could return next weekend for a start against the Mets. Tyrell Jenkins is an option to make the start Monday in his place, with Aaron Blair landing on the DL Saturday with a knee strain.
Sep 2 2016Wisler felt side soreness after his most recent start against the Padres, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Wisler has been fantastic over his last two starts. Over 14 innings, he's allowed just two runs and recorded 14 strikeouts. However, his ERA remains at a lofty 4.76 for the year. At this point in time, he's questionable for his next scheduled start, which would be Monday against the Nationals.
Aug 31 2016Wisler (6-11) allowed a run on four hits while walking three and striking out 10 in Wednesday's 8-1 win over the Padres. The right-hander followed up his strong first start since rejoining the rotation by setting a career-high nine strikeouts. He's now coupled together convincing quality starts while displaying the same consistency and poise he possessed back in May when he threw six straight. Wisler's highlight of the night -- aside from the volume of strikeouts -- came in the fourth inning when he responded with two quick punchouts after allowing a one-out solo shot to Oswaldo Arcia on a 2-2 count. He will look to maintain a similar presence atop the mound on Monday on the road against the Nationals.
Aug 26 2016Wisler (5-11) gave up a single run on two hits and three walks while striking out four over eight innings in a victorious return to the majors Thursday on the road against Arizona. It wasn't exactly a dominant outing with that 4:3 K:BB, but Wisler generated plenty of weak contact and kept the majority of it on the ground, as he does when he's going right. The second-year hurler gave up six runs in four consecutive starts before getting sent down in late July, so this represents a huge improvement, but it's hard to see him sustaining such success unless he can miss some more bats. He'll face the team that drafted him and dealt him to Atlanta, the Padres, in his next start Wednesday.
Aug 24 2016Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett Wednesday, and will get the start in Thursday's series finale against the Diamondbacks. This move is unsurprising considering the Braves sent down Tyrell Jenkins after his last start. Wisler sported a 5.16 ERA with the Braves before being optioned to Gwinnett at the end of July. The 23-year-old has since posted 3.71 ERA in 26.2 innings in the minors.
Jul 23 2016Wisler was hit hard in Saturday's loss to the Rockies, giving up six earned runs on five hits and two walks across 5.1 innings. He struck out three.Wisler cruised into the sixth inning having only allowed a couple of runs that came via the home run, but he was scored upon four times with just one out and was chased from the game after 86 pitches. Wisler has been in free-fall of late, as he has allowed 17 runs in his last 15.1 innings pitched to raise his ERA to 4.92. He will try to turn things around Friday versus the Phillies.
Jul 18 2016Wisler (4-9) allowed six runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings in a loss Monday to the Reds.Wisler surrendered three home runs in the loss and has now given up five in just 10 innings over his past two starts. Wisler has shown decent control and an ability to generate ground balls, but he just has not been able to keep the ball in the yard. He has now given up 18 home runs in just 111.2 innings (1.5 HR/9) after allowing 16 in 109 innings (1.3 HR/9) last season. Unsurprisingly, his ERA is now up to 4.76, right in line with last year's mark of 4.71.
Jul 8 2016Wisler (4-8) allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six over five innings to earn the win Friday at the White Sox.Wisler fell behind 4-3 in the second inning, but the Braves offense came up huge, providing him plenty of run support to help him earn his fourth win of the season. After firing three straight quality starts, his rough outing raised his ERA to 4.47 on the year. He'll make his next start after the All-Star break.
Jun 23 2016Wisler allowed seven hits, four walks and three runs while striking out just one over 6.2 innings Thursday against the Mets.He left in line to lose, but ended up with no decision. Wisler had pitched to a 1.55 ERA with a 20:6 K:BB in his first four career appearances against the Mets, including eight shutout frames back on May 3; unfortunately, his control wasn't sharp in this one and he let the Mets rally for a trio of one-run innings. Control isn't typically Wisler's issue, but his lack of strikeouts (61 in 89.2 innings) and tendency to give up homers makes him a risky fantasy roll.
Jun 22 2016Wisler will start Thursday against the Mets, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.Wisler was originally supposed to start on Wednesday against the Marlins, however the Braves decided to move him to Thursday in order for John Gant to avoid pitching two consecutive starts against the Mets. Gant will now start Wednesday instead.
Jun 16 2016Wisler (3-7) defeated the Reds on Thursday behind 6.2 solid innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. The Reds got runs off him in the first and third innings, but Wisler silenced them after that despite getting eaten up by Joey Votto, who got on base against him four times. With the victory, Wisler's snapped a four-game losing streak that had been particularly brutal over his last two starts (13 runs on 16 hits, including six homers, in just eight innings). As a flyball pitcher who can't afford to see those flies go over the fence thanks to the Braves' generally anemic offense, Wisler makes for a risky fantasy play, particularly considering that it seems likely there's more BABIP correction in store for him.
Jun 11 2016Wisler (2-7) allowed five runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked none over four innings in a 8-2 defeat to the Cubs on Saturday. The right-hander threw just 60 pitches, but he was ineffective through four frames. Wisler allowed three homers, and that wasn't going to be good enough to beat reigning NL Cy Young award winner Jake Arrieta. Wisler has yielded 13 runs and six homers in his last eight innings. That's elevated his ERA to 4.36. Wisler will try to get back on track in his next start Thursday versus the Reds.
May 31 2016Wisler (2-5) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts over seven innings in a loss Tuesday against San FranciscoOne of the few bright spots for Atlanta this season, Wisler now has thrown quality starts all six times he has taken the hill this May. He finishes the month with a solid 29:10 K:BB in 43 innings. While he may not have the strikeout ability to be an elite fantasy pitcher (6.3 K/9), Wisler has shown very good control and an ability to keep hitters off balance. The 23-year-old looks to have a nice future in the middle of Atlanta's rotation.
May 26 2016Wisler (2-4) tossed six innings during Thursday's loss against the Brewers, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while fanning seven. The 23-year-old righty has fanned at least seven in three straight outings, and he threw his fifth straight quality start despite the loss. During his last five outings, Wisler has punched out 27 and walked eight through 36 frames. His numbers aren't sexy by any means, but he's on the right track for sure, and he'll look to keep it going in his next start against the Giants on Tuesday.
May 20 2016Wisler allowed just one run on five hits, walking two and striking out seven over 6.2 innings of a 7-1 win over the Phillies on Friday night.Just a very solid performance for Wisler (2-3) as he lowered his ERA to an impressive 2.93 while becoming the first Atlanta hurler to notch two wins on the season. Interestingly, he was lifted with two outs in the seventh inning even though he had thrown just 95 pitches (61 for strikes), but his departure did not appear to be injury related. He'll take on the Brewers in Atlanta next time out.
May 10 2016Wisler (1-3) lasted eight innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts but took the loss Tuesday against Philadelphia.Wisler has now lasted eight innings in consecutive starts and has four quality starts in his last five (as well as a save in a clean inning in an extra innings contest April 17). He is still struggling to find strikeouts, however, as he only managed a pair despite 10 swinging strikes. Wisler has just a 5.4 K/9 this season, and his command will have to be impeccable if he's going to maintain his 3.27 ERA while allowing such consistent contact. He allowed his fifth home run in six starts Tuesday. That's a worrying sign, as the home run was an issue for him in 2015 as well (16 allowed in 19 starts).
May 3 2016Wisler (1-2) tossed eight shutout innings with four strikeouts and allowed just one hit and two walks in Tuesday's win over the Mets.Wisler didn't miss many bats (seven swinging strikes), but he changed speeds effectively, ranging from 76 MPH with his curveball to 96.4 MPH with his fastball. As a result, the Mets were off balance all night, and although they launched 14 fly balls off Wisler, none of them were able to leave the yard. Wisler hasn't been so lucky for much of the year -- he has surrendered four homers in his five starts -- but he has still been effective thus far, with a 3.24 ERA in 33.1 innings.
Apr 26 2016Wisler gave up five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday. After allowing just one unearned run over 6.2 innings against the Dodgers his last time out, Wisler was knocked around for four runs in the first inning Tuesday. The fifth run against Wisler scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth. Wisler once again received little help from the Braves' offense, as they were only able to score two runs in eight innings against David Price, and that will likely remain a theme for Wisler and all Braves pitchers throughout the season.
Apr 26 2016Wisler (0-1) has a 2.53 ERA and .210 opponent batting average over his last 10 outings, which includes eight starts, but he owns just a 3-3 record during that stretch. The run support the Braves have provided for Wisler has been atrocious. Atlanta has averaged just 2.2 runs per nine innings over his last 10 outings. In three starts this season, the Braves are scoring 1.67 runs per game, the second-lowest run support in the league, when Wisler is on the mound. Even if Wisler continues to pitch well, wins may be hard to come by for him in Atlanta.
Apr 21 2016Wisler was charged with one unearned run on four hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Thursday. He struck out six batters.Unfortunately for Wisler, the opposing pitcher was Clayton Kershaw, who tossed eight innings of one-run ball. An RBI double from Yasmani Grandal decided the game in the 10th. Wisler was needed in relief Sunday with that game going into extras, resulting in his scheduled start being pushed back, but Wisler is fully expected to remain a regular part of the rotation moving forward. The results will likely continue to be mixed for Wisler over the rest of the season, though, and he faces two tough matchups next week in the Red Sox and Cubs.
Apr 17 2016Wisler earned the save during Sunday's extra-inning victory at Miami. As a result, his next start will be pushed back to Wednesday or Thursday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Slated to take his regular turn in the rotation Tuesday against the Dodgers, Wisler was instead called upon in relief Sunday after Jason Grilli blew his second save of the season. Wisler will still take the mound versus the Dodgers, against whom he allowed four runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two in a win last July 20.
Apr 8 2016Wisler didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 7-4 loss to the Cardinals, surrendering seven hits, four earned runs and a walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out six.The 23-year-old surrendered a seventh-inning game-tying pinch-hit homer to Cardinals rookie Jeremy Hazelbaker, tarnishing an otherwise solid 2016 debut. Wisler, who had a forgettable 3.30 BB/9 rate in his rookie campaign, was able to throw first-pitch strikes to 18 of the 28 batters he faced, and 61 of his 91 offerings found the strike zone. The sophomore right-hander could be in for a considerable improvement in his second season, considering his pedigree and the fact he worked diligently in the offseason to refine his changeup.
Mar 23 2016Wisler has given up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six in 8.2 innings so far this spring. He was happy with how he threw his changeup in his last outing, MLB.com reports. "To be honest, this is the best [the changeup] has felt probably ever for me," Wisler said Friday. "I just think the consistency of it -- I'd have it in certain games, but I didn't trust it. I didn't throw it that much, and I'd try to manipulate it. Now, my thought process is just, 'Keep it down in the zone.'"Unhappy with the consistency of his changeup last season, Wisler worked with Hall of Famer Tom Glavine over the winter to refine the offering. Wisler seems to be regaining confidence in the pitch, with manager Fredi Gonzalez saying "he's got a little different look in his eyes." An improved changeup would likely help Wisler against lefty batters, who did a number on the 23-year-old last year (.986 OPS).
Sep 29 2015Wisler (7-8) surrendered five hits, an earned run and two walks over seven innings in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four.Wisler recorded his third consecutive quality start and has now logged back-to-back seven-inning outings. He has posted an impressive 1.93 ERA over that two-game stretch. Wisler did surrender a gopher ball for the fourth straight appearance but was otherwise sharp Tuesday, throwing 65 of 99 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old settled down after a disastrous outing to begin September against this same Nationals squad, and lowered his ERA from 5.97 to 5.11 over his next five trips to the mound during the course of the month. Wisler figures to make his final start in the closing game of 2015 against the Cardinals on Sunday.
Sep 23 2015Wisler struck out a career-high eight Tuesday against the Mets while improving to 6-8 on the year. He gave up two runs on five hits and one walk over seven innings. The rookie right-hander put an end to a nine-start winless drought Tuesday as he looks to finish the season strong. The Mets going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position was a big reason for his success Tuesday. Despite his 5.40 ERA, Wisler's stuff and his pedigree make him a borderline lock for a spot in the starting rotation out of camp next year. He will make his next start Tuesday against the Nationals before pitching the final game of the year at home against the Cardinals.
Sep 17 2015Wisler (5-8) gave up four runs on nine hits and a pair of walks in a loss to the Jays on Thursday. He struck out three. The rookie served up a pair of homers, which hasn't generally been his M.O., but he again posted an ugly K:BB, which certainly has been the way of things for him this year. He still hasn't won a game since July 26, but he's given up four-plus runs five times and accumulated seven losses in that span. He'll next get a rematch with the Mets, against whom he turned in practically his only good start in the past two months last Friday.
Sep 11 2015Wisler (5-7) took the loss against the Mets on Friday, conceding two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings. How rough has this rookie campaign been on Wisler? Friday was just his fifth quality start in 15 opportunities. Still, with Manny Banuelos shut down for the remainder of the season, Wisler will get the opportunity to remain in the rotation and build off of Friday's solid start.
Sep 10 2015Wisler will start for the Braves on Friday against the Mets, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Wisler will take the place of Manny Banuelos, who is likely shut down for the season due to elbow issues. It's unclear if he'll remain in the rotation the rest of the way, but he'll get an opportunity to make a good impression Friday. While he has started for the Braves, Wisler's last appearance came out of the bullpen, so it's possible his pitch count will be limited a bit.
Sep 3 2015Wisler was torched in his fourth straight loss, surrendering seven runs in 1.2 innings before getting pulled in Thursday's blowout loss against the Nationals.Wisler looked like a steal for the Braves in the Craig Kimbrel trade when he started his career with a 5-1 record and 3.43 ERA, but this is the third time he has now allowed seven runs since the beginning of August. He's probably not in danger of losing his rotation spot in 2015, but he might have a tougher time in 2016 if his struggles don't end soon.
Aug 18 2015Wisler took his third loss Tuesday against the Padres as he allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two.Wisler allowed baserunners in every single inning and threw 85 stressful pitches before he was pulled. Wisler now has gone four starts without a quality start. Perhaps more concerning, he hasn't struck out more than five batters since July 11, and his ERA has jumped from 3.10 to 4.64 in that span.
Aug 7 2015Wisler surrendered nine hits, five runs and three walks and struck out three in 5.1 innings against the Marlins on Thursday. After starting the season 5-1 with a 3.43 ERA, Wisler has now had back-to-back outings in which he's given up five or more runs. The 22-year-old rookie has a 7.04 ERA over his last four starts and has seen his ERA spike from 3.10 to 4.85. He'll look to bounce back in his next scheduled start Wednesday at Tampa Bay.
Aug 2 2015Wisler (5-2) was hit hard in defeat Saturday versus the Phillies, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and a walk over 4.2 innings.Wisler fell apart in the fourth and fifth innings, giving up a three-run homer to Cameron Rupp and another solo blast to Odubel Herrera, neither of whom are regarded as power hitters of any sort. The long ball hasn't been an overwhelming concern for Wisler in his eight major-league starts to date, but his collapsing strikeout rate is a little more troublesome. The 22-year-old whiffed only three batters in Saturday's game, the fifth time he's recorded that many strikeouts or fewer.
Jul 26 2015Wisler earned his fifth win of the season Sunday against the Cardinals, allowing just two runs with three strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. The rookie allowed 10 baserunners in this one, but was able to minimize the damage by getting timely outs and escaped with a win over the best team in the majors. Wisler now has a 5-1 record and a 3.43 ERA through his first seven starts in the big leagues and will look to win his fifth straight decision Friday against the Phillies.
Jul 20 2015Wisler allowed four runs on eight hits over six innings to pick up his fourth win Tuesday over the Dodgers.Wisler was hit hard by the Dodgers but managed to limit the damage enough to earn the win thanks to his sharp control, as he didn't walk a single batter. He has just 11 strikeouts in six starts over 35 innings thus far in 2015, and if he can't miss bats more consistently, the floodgates are bound to burst soon.
Jul 12 2015Wisler came out of his first appearance in Coors Field with a quality start, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over six innings Saturday, striking out seven.A first inning mistake to Carlos Gonzalez resulted in a two-run home run, but Wisler settled down nicely after that to come away with a no-decision. The rookie now has a 3.10 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 21:9 K:BB ratio in 29 innings through his first five big league starts.
Jul 6 2015Wisler earned his third win of the season Monday, holding the Brewers to three runs in 5.2 innings.Wisler struck out six and walked just one after handing out five free passes in his previous start. The rookie hurler has been striking out batters at a higher clip of late, and owns a nifty 3.13 ERA through his first four starts. His final start of the first half will come this weekend against the Rockies.
Jul 1 2015Wisler (2-1) gave up only one hit in 5.1 scoreless innings in Wednesday's win over the Nationals. He walked five and struck out six.Wisler made up for the loss to Washington in his last start by winning his rematch against Nationals' right-hander Doug Fister. The 22-year-old rookie won his second game of his career, and he'll go for number three in his next start Monday at Milwaukee.
Jun 26 2015Wisler (1-1) allowed six runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in four innings in Thursday's loss to the Nationals.Winsler, who won his major league debut last week against the New York Mets, couldn't match his previous performance and lasted only four innings Thursday. The 22-year-old will look to bounce back from the worst outing of his career when he faces off against Washington again in his next scheduled start Wednesday.
Jun 19 2015Wisler was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.Wisler will make his big-league debut Friday against the Mets, replacing Mike Foltynewicz in the rotation. The 22-year-old is arguably the top pitching prospect in the Atlanta organization, and he should have an opportunity to stick around in the rotation. Wisler owns a modest 4.29 ERA and 6.8 K/9 for Triple-A Gwinnett this season, but he also has a 1.8 BB/9, continuing his trend of excellent control throughout the minors.
Jun 19 2015Wisler, made his major league debut a success, allowing one run on six hits, he did not walk a batter, and struck out two over eight innings of a 2-1 win over the Mets on Friday night.Wisler (1-0, 1.13 ERA) needed just 88 pitches (63 for strikes) to record eight innings. He typically pitches to contact, with a low strikeout rate, and very good command, so this is probably the type of performance fantasy owners will hope to see more of. This outing should certainly go a long way towards locking down this spot in the rotation.
Jun 18 2015The Braves are expected to call up Wisler to make his major league debut Friday against the Mets, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Friday's starter for Atlanta is still listed as "TBA," but the expectation is that manager Fredi Gonzalez will officially tab Wisler for the start after Thursday's game. The 22-year-old Wisler struggled in his last outing with Triple-A Gwinnett (seven runs in 3.2 innings), but he was outstanding in May and has been good with his control throughout the season (1.8 BB/9). It seems likely Wisler will be given a chance to hold down the rotation spot recently vacated by Mike Foltynewicz, who was optioned down after posting a 5.19 ERA in nine starts.
Jun 18 2015Wisler is an option to start Friday against the Mets, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.Mike Foltynewicz was sent down, and while manager Fredi Gonzalez said the team hasn't decided who will take his turn in the rotation Friday, the 22-year-old Wisler is an obvious candidate given that he's scheduled to start that day for Triple-A Gwinnett. The centerpiece of the return package for Craig Kimbrel, Wisler gave up seven runs over 3.2 innings against Indianapolis in his last start, but he had a 1.78 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 26:6 K:BB in six May outings (35.1 innings). He hasn't issued more than two walks in any of his 12 starts for Gwinnett this season.
Jun 18 2015Wisler will make his major league debut Friday against the Mets.Atlanta had left Friday's scheduled starter as TBA, but the team made it official after Thursday's game that Wisler will indeed get the nod against the Mets in the series opener. Wisler was dealt to the Braves right before Opening Day in a move that sent Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr. to the Padres. In 12 starts at Triple-A Gwinnett this season, Wisler carried a 4.29 ERA with 49 strikeouts across 65 innings. The Braves optioned Sugar Ray Marimon to Triple-A Gwinnett to clear space on the roster for Wisler.
Apr 5 2015Wisler has been traded to the Braves as part of a deal that also sent Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin, Jordan Paroubeck, and a draft pick to Atlanta for Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton Jr., Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports.Wisler had already been sent down to minor league camp in late March, but was considered one of the top arms in the Padres' system. The Braves have not yet announced where Wisler will report to start the season.
Feb 24 2015Wisler will compete for the fifth spot in the Padres' rotation along with Brandon Morrow, Odrisamer Despaigne, and Robbie Erlin, Denis Lin of the San Diego Union Tribune reports.Wisler is a 22-year-old right hander who spent last season at Double-A and Triple-A. He had some trouble adjusting to Triple-A competition in 2014, posting a 5.01 ERA and 1.5 HR/9 rate over 22 starts for the El Paso Chihuahuas of the Pacific Coast League. If Wisler is unable to win the fifth spot, he'll likely start the season at Triple-A.
Aug 8 2014Wisler, 21, has a 5.26 ERA and 70:28 K:BB ratio through 87.1 innings for Triple-A El Paso. The ERA obviously is not great, but let's take a few items into account here. Wisler is only 21 years of age and he's pitching in a hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He has surrendered 16 home runs in 17 starts at this level. This likely will not happen in the pitcher-friendly confines of his home park in San Diego. He has allowed three runs or fewer in each of the last three starts, as well as five of his last six starts, for the Chihuahuas. As such, don't give up on Wisler just yet, as he still has all the tools to become an effective MLB hurler.
May 3 2014Wisler has been promoted to Triple-A El Paso, according to MLB.com's Corey Brock.Wisler pitched 30 innings in Double-A San Antonio this season, racking up 35 strikeouts, walking two batters and allowing only two home runs.
Mar 24 2014Wisler was torched in his first Cactus League start Sunday against the Rangers, giving up five runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out two in 2.2 innings.Wisler tossed a mere 31 strikes in the 57-pitch outing, setting down just eight of the 15 batters faced. He now carries a 6.97 ERA and 5:4 K:BB in 10.1 spring innings, which may not cut it in the competition for the rotation spot that was recently vacated due to Josh Johnson's flexor strain. His primary competition, Robbie Erlin, has mostly been on point -- two runs on seven hits with a 6:2 K:BB in 7.1 frames -- though the Padres may wait for Erlin's final Cactus League start to occur, before making a final call.
Mar 23 2014Wisler and Robbie Erlin are the leading candidates to replace Josh Johnson (forearm) in the rotation, San Diego Union-Tribune reports.Wisler is making his first start of the spring Sunday and has performed adequately thus far (3.52 ERA), but Erlin is on the 40-man roster and Wisler is not. That's not to say Wisler can't earn the spot, but he seems more likely to open the year as the first line of defense at Triple-A.
Jan 27 2014Wisler has received a non-roster invite to Padres spring training, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.Wisler split time at High-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio last season, posting a 10-6 record, 2.78 ERA, 1.029 WHIP, and 131:33 K:BB ratio in 136 innings (26 starts). The 21-year-old right-hander enters 2014 as one of the Padres' top pitching prospects but seems hard-pressed to land a gig in the big league rotation to begin the season. Expect him to head to Triple-A Tucson out of camp.
