Jun 29 2024The Guardians placed Boyd on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left elbow injury. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd signed a one-year deal with the Guardians on Thursday. The left-hander continues to progress in his rehab from Tommy John surgery last June, and the Guardians don't expect Boyd to enter the rotation until August, per Tom Withers of the Associated Press. Boyd started in 15 games for the Tigers in 2023, going 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 71 innings.
Jun 27 2024Boyd (elbow) agreed to terms on a contract with the Guardians on Thursday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear how much more rehab work Boyd has to do after undergoing Tommy John surgery last June, but the Guardians seem comfortable enough with his progress to bring him in on a major-league deal. The 33-year-old southpaw posted a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 71 innings over 15 starts with the Tigers before getting injured last season.
Nov 2 2023Boyd (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This a formality as Boyd heads to free agency, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in late June of 2023. He won't be able to pitch until late in the 2024 campaign, if at all. As a result, he'll likely land a multi-year contract, giving him the chance to recover before contributing to his new club.
Jun 28 2023Boyd underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday on his left elbow, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was just announced Tuesday that Boyd would require the reconstructive elbow procedure and he has already gone under the knife. The 32-year-old impending free agent will likely be sidelined until late 2024.
Jun 27 2023The Tigers placed Boyd on the 60-day injured list Tuesday, and he will require Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was pulled from his start Monday against Texas with left elbow discomfort, and now he'll be forced to miss the rest of the season and most of 2024. He finishes the season with a 5.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 73:25 K:BB through 71 innings. Anthony Misiewicz was promoted in a corresponding move.
Jun 26 2023Boyd was removed from Monday's game against the Rangers due to left elbow discomfort, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd is likely headed for further evaluation to determine whether he'll miss any time. He'll be considered day-to-day until more information surfaces.
Jun 15 2023Boyd (4-5) allowed four runs on seven hits across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing five runs and taking the loss in his last start, it looked like Boyd was headed for another rough outing when he allowed four runs in the second inning. However, the lefty settled in from there and managed to earn his first win since May 19. Boyd will still take a middling 5.60 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively set for Wednesday against the Royals, giving him a good chance to earn a win in consecutive appearances for the first time this season.
Jun 10 2023Boyd (3-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks over 5 innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd didn't have his best stuff Saturday, surrendering a two-run homer to Nick Ahmed in the second inning and later serving up a three-run shot to Lourdes Gurriel in the fifth. The left-hander recorded only three strikeouts after fanning at least five in each of his previous three starts and he's now lost three of his last four decisions. It was also Boyd's fourth time this season allowing at least five runs.
Jun 4 2023Boyd allowed a run on three hits and struck out nine without walking a batter over five innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd pitched well, but the Tigers' bullpen couldn't maintain the lead. The three baserunners were a season low, while his nine strikeouts were a season high to make this his sharpest start of the year. It's just the second time he's limited an opponent to one run or less. Boyd has struggled to a 5.57 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 53:22 K:BB through 53.1 innings over 11 starts this year, his first as a starter since 2021. He's projected for a home start versus Arizona in his next outing.
May 29 2023Boyd (3-4) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on five hits and four walks over six innings in a 5-0 loss against Texas. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd tied his season high with four walks but was still able to complete six innings for the second time this year. The veteran is transitioning back to a starting role after operating exclusively as a reliever for Seattle last year, and he's struggled to find a rhythm. Despite the less-than-ideal numbers (5.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP), Boyd remains firmly entrenched in Detroit's rotation and is scheduled to pitch again during the finale of a three-game weekend set versus the White Sox.
May 24 2023Boyd allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd pitched quite well in the outing, but he began to fade in the fourth, allowing a run on a hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. When the left-hander let two more hitters reach base in the fifth, he was pulled after 86 pitches in favor of Will Vest, who retired Bobby Witt to keep Boyd from incurring additional damage. Boyd looked good when he was in the game, racking up 15 swings-and-misses and fanning six batters. This was the first time all season he's finished a start having allowed fewer than two earned runs.
May 20 2023Boyd (3-3) picked up the win Friday, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in an 8-6 victory over the Nationals. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw blanked Washington for five frames before running out of steam in the sixth and falling just short of his second quality start of the season. Despite this solid effort, a couple of rough recent outings have left Boyd with a 6.21 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 33:16 K:BB through 37.2 innings on the season. He'll look to whittle down those ratios in his next start, which is likely to come next week in Kansas City.
May 13 2023Boyd (2-3) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on five hits and four walks over 1.1 innings during a 9-2 loss to the Mariners. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd couldn't find any rhythm Friday and was pulled after just 55 pitches with Seattle already up 6-0 in the second inning. The poor outing elevated the left-hander's ERA to 6.47 through seven starts (32 innings) and snapped his four-game streak of completing at least five innings. Boyd will look to get back on track next time out, which is tentatively scheduled to come during a three-game weekend set in Washington.
May 5 2023Boyd (2-2) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk in six innings, earning the win Friday over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Boyd's longest start of the season, though he was moderately efficient with 87 pitches (60 strikes). He's allowed more than three runs just once in six outings, and this is the first time in 2023 he hasn't walked a batter. The southpaw now has a 5.28 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB across 30.2 innings this season. He's projected for a home start versus the Mariners next week.
Apr 30 2023Boyd (1-2) took the loss in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, surrendering six runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Detroit jumped on the veteran southpaw for four runs in the second inning before a two-run homer by light-hitting Ryan McKenna in the sixth chased Boyd from the game. It's the first time in five starts this season he's given up more than three runs, but Boyd is beginning to have trouble keeping the ball in the yard, as he's served up four home runs in his last 15.2 innings. He'll take a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 22:11 K:BB through 24.2 frames into his next outing, which could come next weekend in St. Louis.
Apr 3 2023Boyd yielded two runs on two hits and three walks over 4.1 innings during Monday's win over Houston. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd kept the Astros' offense tame until they finally broke through in the fifth. He gave up one run on a Jeremy Pena groundout and was charged with another when Yordan Alvarez took Jose Cisnero deep. Boyd forced just six whiffs on 35 swings. He's expected to face the Red Sox at home this weekend.
Mar 29 2023Boyd will start the Tigers' fourth regular-season game next Monday at Houston, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was scratched from his final scheduled Grapefruit League outing this past Sunday against the Blue Jays, but it thankfully was not an injury-related decision. He'll follow Eduardo Rodriguez, Spencer Turnbull and Joey Wentz in Detroit's season-opening starting rotation. Matt Manning has the No. 5 spot.
Mar 25 2023Boyd will not start Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays as scheduled, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers have yet to announce a reason for the move, but it's certainly possible it's injury-related. Boyd hasn't pitched like he's hurt this spring, posting an excellent 21:3 K:BB in 13 innings, but he missed most of last season due to elbow issues.
Mar 12 2023Boyd tossed four scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins. He allowed a hit and a walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd has now logged nine innings this spring, and he's recorded a strong 2.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP to go along with 17 strikeouts. The lefty has shown an ability to miss bats in the past, and while he made only 15 starts the last two years due to injuries, he could be primed for a nice season if he's fully healthy again. The Tigers will likely carefully manage Boyd's workload, however, which would cap his fantasy upside.
Mar 8 2023Boyd allowed one run on one hit across three innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. He had no walks and struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outside of allowing a second inning home run to Nolan Gorman, Boyd was flawless, and the seven strikeouts are a positive sign. The lefty has a career 4.90 ERA, though he's been able to offset that to some degree in the past by racking up strikeouts, including a career-best 238 over 185.1 innings in 2019. Boyd figures to have some volatility and remains an injury risk, but he could be a decent fantasy option if he continues to miss bats at a good rate.
Mar 2 2023Boyd allowed one run on two hits and a walk across two innings of work in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was making his spring debut and it was his first action with the Tigers since 2021, when he made 15 starts and recorded a 3.89 ERA. The lefty missed part of that season and most of 2022 due to a flexor tendon surgery, so Detroit will likely be cautious with him this season. Boyd has some strikeout upside, though he's certainly not without risk for fantasy managers due to his injury history.
Dec 1 2022Boyd agreed to a one-year, $10 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander spent most of 2022 recovering from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent in September of the previous year, but he returned as a reliever for the final month of the campaign in Seattle and had a 1.35 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 13:8 K:BB over 13.1 innings. Boyd will now return to Detroit, where he spent the prior six-plus seasons. He was pitching well in 2021 prior to the injury with a 3.89 ERA across 15 starts, and a return to that form would be a major boost to the Tigers' starting rotation.
Oct 4 2022Boyd fired three scoreless relief innings during which he allowed one walk and recorded five strikeouts in a loss to the Tigers on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander bedeviled his former club with a sharp performance in which he recorded first-pitch strikes to all 10 batters he faced and rang up 11 swings and misses overall. Boyd's body of work since making his Sept. 1 debut has to give manager Scott Servais some peace of mind heading into the postseason, as the one-time starter, who can cover multiple innings when necessary, now boasts a 2-0 record, 1.35 ERA and 0.98 WHIP across 10 appearances.
Sep 23 2022Boyd (2-0) secured the win over the Athletics on Thursday, firing two scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw pounded 20 of his 25 pitches in for strikes while giving the Mariners a pair of valuable frames following an atypically short start from George Kirby. Boyd has been an invaluable asset to manager Scott Servais as a multi-inning left-handed bullpen option, scattering four hits across 8.1 scoreless frames during his first six appearances since being activated from the injured list Sept. 1.
Sep 5 2022Boyd (1-0) picked up the victory in an extra-innings win over the Guardians on Sunday, firing a scoreless 10th inning during which he issued three walks (two intentional). ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was quite the eventful frame for Boyd, who intentionally put Jose Ramirez on to start the inning and then got Josh Naylor to hit into a double play that moved phantom runner Amed Rosario over to third base. After another intentional free pass to Oscar Gonzalez, Boyd then loaded the bases by legitimately walking Andres Gimenez before finally retiring Mike Freeman on a flyout with the bases juiced. The appearance was the southpaw's second since being activated from the injured list Thursday, with the first also a scoreless one-inning effort that unfolded that same day.
Sep 1 2022The Mariners reinstated Boyd (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd will be one of two players that will be joining Seattle with the roster expanding from 26 to 28 men for the final month of the season, with outfielder Taylor Trammell also receiving a call-up from Triple-A Tacoma. Though Boyd has worked almost exclusively as a starter through his first seven seasons in the big leagues, he'll be deployed out of the bullpen with Seattle as he makes his return from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent last September. He was excellent across his six minor-league rehab outings, striking out 14 over eight innings while allowing two earned runs on four hits and no walks.
Aug 30 2022The Mariners plan to activate Boyd (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd has struck out seven in four scoreless innings across his last three rehab appearances, suggesting he could be a valuable addition to Seattle's bullpen down the stretch. The lefty has yet to appear in an MLB game this year after undergoing flexor tendon surgery last September.
Aug 29 2022Boyd (elbow) generated a pair of one-inning, two-strikeout scoreless efforts for Triple-A Tacoma on Friday and Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The pair of spotless showings are the latest indication Boyd could serve in a key bullpen role down the stretch for the Mariners. The veteran left-hander has generated scoreless efforts in five of his six rehab appearances, and he's now logged eight innings overall with the Rainiers ahead of what will likely be a Sept. 1 activation.
Aug 25 2022Boyd (elbow) fired two scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded three strikeouts in Triple-A Tacoma's win over Salt Lake on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The impressive effort, which earned Boyd the second hold of his rehab assignment, was a welcome rebound after he'd given up a pair of runs over two innings in his prior appearance with the Rainiers. The left-hander actually threw fewer pitches Tuesday (23) than in that outing (40) due to a much more efficient performance which saw Boyd pound 17 of his offerings in for strikes. The 31-year-old now has three scoreless efforts in his first four trips to the mound with Tacoma, but he's likely to still log at least one more appearance before activation is considered.
Aug 20 2022Boyd (elbow) took the loss for Triple-A Tacoma against Albuquerque on Friday, allowing two earned runs on two hits, a balk and a hit batsman while recording four strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As the busy final line implies, Boyd had some control issues in his third rehab appearance. The veteran southpaw did work up to 40 pitches (26 strikes), and his swing-and-miss stuff was encouraging. Boyd had logged a pair of scoreless one-inning outings in his first two trips to the mound for the Rainiers, and the Associated Press reports manager Scott Servais estimates the 31-year-old could join the big-league bullpen within the next two weeks.
Aug 16 2022Boyd (elbow) struck out two over a perfect inning Monday in his first rehab appearance at Triple-A Tacoma. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Acquired from the Giants on Aug. 2, Boyd currently occupies a spot on the Mariners' 60-day injured list but looks on track for activation at some point within the next few weeks. Due to his prolonged recovery from the flexor tendon surgery he underwent last September, Boyd doesn't look like he'll have enough time to get stretched out for a starting role, so he's expected to slot into the Seattle bullpen once he's eventually reinstated from the IL. Though he likely won't factor into the closing situation, Boyd could prove to be a valuable multi-inning arm out of the bullpen.
Aug 8 2022Boyd (elbow) faced hitters in a live batting practice session Monday, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd, whom the Mariners acquired last week in a deadline deal with the Giants, has been on the shelf all season after undergoing left flexor tendon surgery last September. He was diagnosed with a strain in the surgically repaired tendon in June, but after a four-week shutdown period, he was cleared to start throwing again. Boyd appears to have navigated bullpen sessions without any setbacks, so facing hitters likely marks the final hurdle he'll need to clear before heading out on what could be an extended minor-league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old southpaw may not have enough time to build up for a starting role, but he could prove to be a useful asset out of the Seattle bullpen down the stretch.
Aug 2 2022The Mariners acquired Boyd (elbow) from the Giants on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd's move appears to be an addendum to the previously reported trade which sent Curt Casali (oblique) from San Francisco to Seattle in exchange for Michael Stryffeler, meaning the Mariners will be getting a pair of injured players in exchange for the Double-A reliever. Boyd hasn't thrown a pitch in an organized game this year as he makes his way back from flexor tendon surgery, but he resumed throwing in late July after a six-week setback. He's been a starter throughout his career, but given the length of his absence, the Mariners will likely limit him to multi-inning relief duty upon his return, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Boyd is set to become a free agent this winter.
Jul 25 2022Boyd (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was shut down in mid-June after feeling discomfort in his elbow while rehabbing from left flexor tendon surgery, but he's finally received clearance to throw off a mound. The team figures to watch the southpaw closely over the next few days to determine whether he can progress in his rehab.
Jun 17 2022Boyd has a flexor tendon strain and won't throw for four weeks, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will be shut down and then evaluated in four weeks. Boyd had surgery on his flexor tendon in September 2021, so this is a concerning diagnosis. He hasn't pitched at all this season and should be considered out indefinitely.
Jun 13 2022Boyd felt some discomfort in his left elbow during Monday's live batting practice session, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants have yet to reveal next steps for Boyd, but the team will likely see how he feels over the course of the next few days before re-evaluating the southpaw. If he's unable to begin a rehab assignment soon, his return date could creep into late July and possibly into August.
Jun 10 2022Boyd (elbow) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd has been throwing 40-pitch bullpen sessions since April and has been able to mix in all of his pitches. The southpaw has spent the start of the season recovering from left flexor tendon surgery that he underwent last September, but he'll likely be able to begin a rehab assignment soon before rejoining the Giants in late June or early July.
May 24 2022Boyd (elbow) is almost ready for live batting practice, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd continues to recover from his left flexor tendon surgery from last September. He's been throwing 40-pitch bullpen sessions since April. Webeck adds that Boyd is unlikely to be ready to return when first eligible June 6 -- it's more likely the southpaw returns in late June or early July, depending on if the Giants need him to function as a starter or a reliever.
Apr 11 2022Boyd (elbow) has been throwing off a mound twice a week and is making good progress, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Giants signed Boyd to a one-year, $5.2 million deal in mid-March knowing full well that he wouldn't be recovered from September elbow surgery until June. It looks as though he's still on that pace.
Mar 27 2022Boyd (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery on his left elbow in September and isn't expected to be ready for game action until June, so it's not much of a surprise he'll open the season on the 60-day IL. The 31-year-old had a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 67:23 K:BB over 78.2 innings for Detroit last season, and he'll be in the mix for a rotation spot with San Francisco after inking a one-year, $5.2 million deal in mid-March.
Mar 17 2022Boyd (elbow) signed a one-year, $5.2 million deal with the Giants on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery in his left elbow in September and isn't expected to return until June. Once healthy, he'll compete for a spot in the Giants' increasingly crowded rotation. The lefty had what looked like a breakout season in 2019, as his typically sub-par strikeout rate spiked to 30.2 percent, though that came with a 4.56 ERA. He lost all his strikeout gains in 2020 as his ERA soared to 6.71 and then saw his strikeout rate slip still further to 19.9 percent in 2021, though that came with a career-best 3.89 ERA. What version of Boyd takes the mound in 2022 once he's healthy remains to be seen.
Nov 30 2021Boyd (elbow) was non-tendered by the Tigers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd underwent flexor tendon surgery in late September and was likely to be unavailable for the start of the 2022 campaign, and Detroit opted not to tender him a contract. The 30-year-old lefty pitched well when healthy last season with a 3.89 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 67:23 K:BB over 78.2 innings (15 starts). He'll now need to contend with free agency in addition to his rehab program.
Sep 24 2021Boyd will undergo surgery on the flexor tendon in his left elbow Monday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd had a second visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache this week which prompted fears of Tommy John surgery, but he'll instead be undergoing a different procedure on his elbow. The 30-year-old is without an official recovery timeline but hopes to pitch at some point next season, which makes it sound as though he may not be ready for Opening Day.
Sep 19 2021Boyd (elbow) is scheduled for a second visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache early next week, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd recently had a visit with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister, and he's now scheduled to check in with Dr. ElAttrache, both of which are known for their experience with Tommy John surgery. A decision has yet to be made on whether the left-hander will require the procedure, but it appears to be a possibility and leaves his availability for 2022 in question.
Sep 11 2021Boyd (elbow strain) will see orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister for an evaluation, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Considering Meister just performed Tommy John surgery on Tigers catcher Jake Rogers, this is a concerning development. It seems highly unlikely that Boyd will pitch again this season and it's possible he won't pitch again until the 2023 season.
Sep 10 2021Boyd was scratched from Friday's start against the Rays because of the same recurring elbow soreness that sidelined him from mid-June to late August, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw will be further examined by Detroit's medical staff to figure out the severity of the issue, but given that the same injury put Boyd on the shelf for over two months already this season, it wouldn't be at all surprising if he doesn't return in 2021. Per Evan Woodbery of MLive.com, he will be placed on the injured list, though the transaction has not been made official at this point. Tyler Alexander draws the start in his place Friday.
Sep 5 2021Boyd (3-8) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across four innings, taking the loss to the Reds on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd gave up all five of his runs in the third inning. He allowed five hits in the inning, capped off by an Aristides Aquino three-run homer. Boyd has hurled four-inning losses in both of his starts since returning from the 60-day injured list with a triceps injury. The 30-year-old has a 3.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 67 strikeouts in 78.2 innings this season.
Aug 29 2021Boyd (3-7) took the loss Sunday versus Toronto. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After an absence of two-and-a-half months due to triceps tendinitis, Boyd had a middling performance in his return. The two runs he allowed came on solo home runs by Bo Bichette and Kevin Smith, but Detroit's offense mustered just one run of support. Boyd threw 71 pitches (44 strikes) in the contest, up from 56 pitches in his final rehab start with Triple-A Toledo. The southpaw has a 3.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 61:21 K:BB through 74.2 innings this season. He's projected to make his next start in Cincinnati next weekend.
Aug 25 2021Manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Boyd (triceps) is "penciled in" to start Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd made his final rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday and allowed a hit and no walks while striking out six in 4.1 innings. He tossed 56 pitches in the appearance. The southpaw may have a pitch count if he ultimately returns to the mound Sunday.
Aug 22 2021Boyd (triceps) is scheduled to make what's expected to be his third and final rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After covering three innings and 43 pitches in his most recent outing Aug. 18, Boyd is expected to push his pitch count up to the 60-to-70 range Tuesday. If Boyd experiences no setbacks with his left triceps tendon in the outing, he could slide back into the Detroit rotation as soon as Sunday's series finale with the Blue Jays. Boyd has been on the 60-day injured list since June 14.
Aug 17 2021The Tigers are targeting their Aug. 27-29 home series versus the Blue Jays for Boyd's (triceps) return from the 60-day injured list, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Out since mid-June with left triceps tendinitis, Boyd reached the final phase of his recovery program when he began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Friday. He tossed two scoreless frames for the affiliate, then rejoined the Tigers later in the weekend for another bullpen session. The Tigers plan on having Boyd make two more rehab starts before bringing him back from the IL, with the southpaw's next outing with Toledo likely to come as soon as Wednesday. If Boyd is able to build up to five innings during his rehab assignment and steer clear of any setbacks, he should make about five or six more starts for Detroit before the season ends.
Aug 12 2021Boyd (triceps) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move comes on Boyd's 59th day on the injured list, so it won't have any impact on his return timeline. He'll begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, but the length of his absence means he'll likely need a handful of outings before he's ready to go.
Aug 10 2021Boyd (triceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd has been out for nearly two months with triceps tendinitis. Given the length of his absence, he'll presumably require multiple rehab appearances before he returns from the injured list. If he makes three rehab starts, he could return sometime in late August, though the Tigers have yet to specify exactly when they expect him back.
Aug 8 2021Boyd (triceps) threw live batting practice Sunday at the Tigers' spring training facility, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Assuming Boyd checks out fine following the throwing session, he could be cleared to begin a minor-league rehab assignment as soon as the upcoming weekend. Because Boyd has been on the injured list since mid-June with left triceps tendinitis, he may require a few outings in the minors before the Tigers deem him ready to rejoin the big-league rotation.
Jul 25 2021Boyd (triceps) was cleared to begin throwing off a mound last week and is expected to begin a rehab assignment in early August, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Considering Boyd has been on the shelf since mid-June with left triceps tendinitis, he may need two rehab starts in the minors to ramp up his pitch count before Detroit activates him from the 10-day injured list. A firmer target date for the start of his rehab assignment likely won't be available until he advances to facing hitters in live batting practice.
Jul 18 2021Boyd (triceps) has been steadily increasing his throwing distance off flat ground, but he has yet to be cleared for mound work since being placed on the 10-day injured list June 15, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While it's a positive sign that Boyd isn't shut down, the Tigers aren't counting on him to return from the injured list before the end of July. A firmer target date for Boyd's reinstatement should come once he's sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment, but he has multiple hurdles to clear in the recovery process before he reaches that point.
Jun 18 2021Boyd (triceps) is dealing with muscular tendinitis and won't return before the All-Star break, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Although several doctors seem to have ruled out structural damage, the team will give the southpaw extended time to recover to make sure he's fully healthy when he returns. Matt Manning and Wily Peralta could remain in the rotation while Boyd and Spencer Turnbull (forearm) are sidelined.
Jun 15 2021Boyd was placed on the 10-day injured list with left arm discomfort Tuesday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw will be further evaluated in the next 24 hours, so it's still possible he'll be given a more detailed diagnosis and return timeline in the near future. For the time being, he'll miss at least his next turn through the rotation. He'll be eligible to come off the IL on June 25.
Jun 14 2021Boyd left Monday's start against Kansas City due to discomfort in his arm, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd had to be removed in the bottom of the third inning after recording the first out. He made it through 2.1 scoreless frames despite surrendering five hits prior to his exit. The severity of Boyd's injury is not yet known, but he's currently undergoing further evaluation, per Jason Beck of MLB.com.
Jun 9 2021Boyd improved to 3-6 on the season after limiting the Mariners to one unearned run over six innings in the Tigers' 5-3 victory Tuesday. He scattered six hits and a walk and struck out three in the 97-pitch start. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from a bumpy second inning in which he allowed two hits and gave up a run on a Jonathan Schoop fielding error, Boyd was otherwise on cruise control during the outing. The Tigers staked him to an early 3-0 lead after one inning, and that would be all the support Boyd would need to silence the Seattle bats. He retired the final seven batters he faced before turning the game over to the relief crew, which was able to maintain the Tigers' lead.
Jun 1 2021Boyd allowed five runs across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's game against the Brewers. He gave up five hits and three walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The three walks were problematic but Boyd was really done in by three home runs, which has been an issue during the lefty's career. In his last full season back in 2019, Boyd allowed 39 home runs in 185.1 innings, which was the second highest total in the American League. He then gave up another 15 long balls in just 60.1 innings last year. Boyd has only been tagged six times in 62.1 innings so far in 2021, but four of those have come in his last two appearances. He'll look to keep the ball in the park in his next outing, which is scheduled for next Tuesday against the Mariners.
May 27 2021Boyd (2-6) allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five across five innings to take the loss Thursday against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd stumbled out of the gate, as he allowed two hits and an earned run in the first inning. However, he settled in from there to toss four scoreless innings. Trouble ensued when he returned to the mound for the sixth frame, when he promptly allowed three earned runs without recording an out to spoil his start. Across his last three outings, Boyd has now surrendered 13 earned runs across 16 innings. Even so, he's maintained a 3.43 ERA with a 47:15 K:BB across 57.2 frames for the season.
May 22 2021Boyd (2-5) allowed five runs across five innings to take the loss Saturday against the Royals. He gave up eight hits and three walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd started the season very strongly but has fallen off a little bit in his last two outings, allowing nine earned runs across 11 innings. The lefty has seen his ERA rise from 1.94 to 3.08 in the process. Boyd would certainly live with that 3.08 figure, but he's coming off a 4.56 ERA in 2019 and a 6.71 ERA in 2020, so there's reason to believe his current number will continue to inch upward. He'll look to buck the trend and pitch better when he takes the hill again Thursday against Cleveland.
May 16 2021Boyd (2-4) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Cubs after allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while fanning eight across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd didn't have his best stuff Sunday despite tossing 69 of his 92 pitches for strikes, but this might have been nothing more than a bump on the road for the 30-year-old left-hander -- this was the first time he allowed more than three runs in any start. He still owns a 2.45 ERA across 47.2 innings, though, and he will try to bounce back in his next start scheduled for next week against the Royals on the road.
May 11 2021Boyd settled for a no-decision during Tuesday's win despite holding the Royals scoreless across six innings. He allowed four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After missing a turn in the rotation because of knee tendonitis, Boyd looked solid against Kansas City as the left-hander held his opponent scoreless for the second time this season. Boyd left the game with a seven-run lead, which unfortunately was erased by the bullpen. Despite a successful stat line for the 30-year-old (1.94 ERA, 0.94 WHIP), Boyd's usual lack of run support and bullpen reliability make him hard to count on. He's slated to make his next start Sunday against the Cubs.
May 9 2021Boyd and the Tigers won't face the Twins on Sunday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Detroit, Megan Ryan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will make up the game as part of a split doubleheader July 16. The Tigers will be off until Tuesday, when they continue their homestand with a three-game set against the Royals. Expect manager A.J. Hinch to bump each of his rotation members back due to the postponement, which would allow Boyd to start the series opener versus Kansas City.
May 4 2021Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said during an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that Boyd will start Sunday against the Twins "if all things continue to progress" with his sore left knee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Tigers' decision not to place Boyd on the injured list after he was removed from his April 29 start due to knee tendinitis would seem to support the notion that the southpaw is trending toward a return to action this weekend. Though Boyd remains on the active roster, he'll still end up missing one turn through the rotation. Michael Fulmer will pick up a start Tuesday against the Red Sox in place of Boyd in what Hinch suggested will likely be a bullpen game.
Apr 30 2021Boyd (knee) is likely to miss his turn through the rotation next week but may not require a trip to the injured list, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager A.J. Hinch indicated Friday the early returns were positive after the left-hander was pulled from Thursday's start with left knee tendinitis. Even if Boyd gets placed on the IL, he could still end up missing only the one start since the Tigers have scheduled off days the next two Mondays.
Apr 29 2021Boyd was pulled from Thursday's start against the White Sox due to left knee tendinitis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd exited the game after completing only one inning and throwing 36 pitches. It's positive news that he did not suffer an arm injury, though it remains unclear if he will be forced to miss additional time.
Apr 24 2021Boyd (2-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits across eight innings but took the loss Saturday against the Royals. He struck out three and did not issue any walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd got virtually no support in this one, as the Detroit bats mustered only three hits and one run. Still, the lefty was able to continue his strong start to the season. Through five starts, Boyd has a sparkling 1.82 ERA, though he's managed just 22 strikeouts across 34.2 innings. He had a K/9 of 9.0 or better in each of the last two seasons, so perhaps the whiffs will start to come. Boyd will look to keep things rolling in his next scheduled outing Thursday against the White Sox.
Apr 18 2021Boyd allowed two runs on four hits across 7.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Athletics. He walked one and struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That's now three straight quality starts for Boyd, who narrowly missed another one on Opening Day when he didn't allow a run across 5.2 innings. The good stretch has translated to a 2.03 ERA and 0.98 WHIP for the lefty, and the only thing missing has been strikeouts, as Boyd has only 19 through 26.2 innings. He may need to start missing more bats to sustain this level of success moving forward, but fantasy managers aren't complaining about the performance so far. Boyd will look to keep it rolling Saturday against the Royals.
Apr 13 2021Boyd (2-1) allowed one run across 6.2 innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Astros. He gave up six hits and a walk while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd did well against a strong Houston lineup and didn't allow any flyballs to leave the park, which has been a problem in the past for the lefty. The strikeouts have yet to come for Boyd, as he has just 14 across 19.1 innings so far, but fantasy managers can't complain with his 2-1 record or 1.86 ERA through three appearances. He will look to keep things rolling on the road against the Athletics Sunday
Apr 7 2021Boyd (1-1) was charged with the loss Wednesday versus the Twins after allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and zero walks over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander pitched well throughout the afternoon, but a two-run double from Jorge Polanco during the sixth inning with the Tigers winning 2-1 proved to be the difference in the contest. Regardless, Boyd looked good for the second straight outing to begin the season after delivering 5.2 scoreless frames Opening Day, and he'll attempt to keep things rolling at Houston early next week.
Mar 22 2021Boyd was named the Tigers' Opening Day starter Monday and will get the ball April 1 against Cleveland, William Ladson of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran lefty earns the honor for the second season in a row. He wouldn't get the nod on many teams following a season in which he struggled to a 6.71 ERA, but the Tigers' wave of young pitching prospects hasn't been fully established yet, making him the clear top choice with Spencer Turnbull sidelined due to COVID-19 protocols.
Mar 15 2021Boyd allowed one earned run on three hits and a walk across four innings of work in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd surrendered a leadoff home run but settled in nicely after that and looked sharp while tossing 60 pitches. He now has seven strikeouts across his last seven Grapefruit League innings, which is right in line with the 9.0 K/9 he registered in 12 starts last season, and he has a spring ERA of 2.00. If the lefty can get closer to his 2019 K/9 of 11.6 this year, he should once again be a solid fantasy asset, even if he doesn't deliver a great ERA or win total.
Mar 10 2021Boyd allowed one run across three innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He gave up three hits and a walk, while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd is off to a solid start this spring, allowing just one run through five innings of work with four strikeouts. It would be nice to see the lefty begin generating more strikeouts in his upcoming Grapefruit League starts, as his K/9 fell to 9.0 last season after sitting at 11.6 in 2019. If Boyd can get the whiffs back up, he should be able to maintain fantasy value even if he struggles with his ratios and wins.
Mar 6 2021Boyd tossed two scoreless innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He walked two and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd made his Grapefruit League debut and was solid against a New York lineup that had most of its regulars. The lefty struggled with a 6.71 ERA and 1.48 WHIP last season, but he also acknowledged pitching through a hamstring injury and plantar fasciitis, which could have impacted his mechanics. If Boyd looks healthy and effective this spring, he could be primed for a bounceback 2021 campaign.
Feb 21 2021Boyd tossed 41 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday and is reportedly ahead of his normal schedule at this point in the spring, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is encouraging news early in camp, as Boyd acknowledged that he pitched through a hamstring injury and plantar fasciitis last season. The ailments might have contributed to his subpar 6.71 ERA and 1.48 WHIP, but if he's healthier in 2021, the lefty could return to his 2019 form, when he registered a 4.56 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 238 strikeouts across 185.1 innings.
Jan 29 2021Boyd pitched through a hamstring injury suffered during summer training camp, and then later with plantar fasciitis in his left foot over his last couple of starts, Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't enough to put Boyd on the IL, but perhaps it should have, as he turned in a 6.71 ERA with 15 homers allowed. "Physically, it affected me in terms of being able to repeat my delivery," Boyd said Monday. "There was no pain for the majority of the year, but my mechanics moved and adapted to where I wasn't able to do the same things on the mound that I used to." The southpaw saw his K% tumble from a career-high 30.2 percent in 2019 to 23.3 percent last season, so perhaps a return to health will allow him to regain some dominance.
Jan 15 2021Boyd and the Tigers reached a one-year, $6.5 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd received a fairly hefty salary from the Tigers for the 2021 season, and the two sides won't require an arbiter since they were able to strike a deal before Friday's deadline. The lefty logged a 6.71 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 60.1 innings across 12 starts in 2020 and will attempt to bounce back in 2021.
Sep 20 2020Boyd (2-7) allowed five earned runs on five hits across five innings to take the loss Sunday against Cleveland. He walked one and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was unable to duplicate the success from his most recent start, when he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, and instead reverted back to the poor form he's shown for much of the season. The lefty allowed a two-run home run to Jose Ramirez, and he's now given up 14 long balls in just 54.1 innings. Boyd will carry an unsightly 6.96 ERA into his next outing, which is scheduled for Saturday against the Royals.
Sep 15 2020Boyd (2-6) threw 5.2 innings of two-hit ball during the Tigers' 6-0 victory over the Royals on Tuesday. He walked four and struck out five without allowing a run. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd picked up his second win in four starts. It was his first appearance without allowing a run in 2020. The effort dropped his season ERA 6.75, which still represents his worst campaign outside of a brief 2015 call-up. Boyd will draw the Indians in his next start over the weekend.
Sep 9 2020Boyd (1-6) took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks over three innings Wednesday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander had a 2.60 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in his previous three starts entering Wednesday, but he found minimal success against the Brewers. Boyd has a 7.63 ERA and 1.60 WHIP through 43.2 innings, and he'll try to turn the page next week against the Royals.
Sep 4 2020Boyd (1-5) took the loss in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins, allowing two runs across six innings. He gave up four hits and struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was an inauspicious first inning for Boyd, who gave up back-to-back home runs to Jorge Polanco and Josh Donaldson to begin the game. However, the lefty settled down from there, as he allowed just two hits the rest of the way. Unfortunately, he got zero run support and was saddled with his fifth loss of the year. Boyd has turned in consecutive quality starts against a strong Minnesota lineup, and he's beginning to look like the ace the Tigers need him to be. His ERA is still high at 6.64, but he'll look to keep lowering that number in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday against the Brewers.
Aug 30 2020Boyd improved to 1-4 while covering a season-high six innings Saturday in the Tigers' 8-2 win over the Twins in the front end of a doubleheader. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Boyd served up his ninth home run of the season in the outing, that was about the only blemish on his final line. After posting a 10.24 ERA through his first four starts of the season, the southpaw is now beginning to look like the staff ace Detroit had expected him to be. In his past three turns, Boyd has has submitted a 3.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 21:3 K:BB in 15.1 innings.
Aug 28 2020Boyd won't start Friday against the Tigers as the doubleheader was rained out, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was originally set to take the mound in Game 1, but the Tigers changed their pitching plans after the contest was delayed by rain, and the twin bill was eventually postponed. One game will be made up via a doubleheader Saturday, and the veteran lefty will take the mound for Game 1. Tarik Skubal will start the nightcap for the Tigers.
Aug 27 2020Boyd will start the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd was initially scheduled to start Thursday's game before the contest was postponed. However, he'll start just one day later as part of a twin bill. The Tigers likely won't need to make any changes to the rotation in the coming days since the team has two scheduled off days next week.
Aug 22 2020Boyd (0-4) allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six across 5.1 innings to take the loss Saturday against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd had his best start of the season, only his second without allowing a home run. He did not surrender a run while in the game, but exited the contest with runners on first and second that the bullpen allowed to score. It's been an ugly start to the campaign for Boyd, as he has an 8.48 ERA and has allowed 2.5 HR/9 across six starts and 28.2 innings. He'll look to build on this positive outing his next turn through the rotation, currently projected to come Thursday against Minnesota
Aug 17 2020Boyd (0-3) allowed three earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine across four innings to take the loss Monday against the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd started the game in abysmal fashion, surrendering back-to-back home runs to Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada. After allowing another home run to Anderson in the second inning, Boyd did settle in to retire the final seven batters he faced. On a positive note, Boyd also racked up 16 swinging strikes on 90 total pitches to put together his best strikeout performance of the season. However, to be effective, he has to find a way to keep in the yard as he has now allowed 3.1 HR/9, which has led to a horrific 9.64 ERA across 23.1 innings. He'll look to turn things around in his next start, currently projected to come Saturday at Cleveland.
Aug 12 2020Boyd (0-2) took the loss Wednesday against the White Sox after allowing seven runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks across 4.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander's performance was eerily similar to his previous outing, as he also surrendered seven runs over 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and three walks Friday versus the Pirates. Boyd is off to a terrible start with a 10.24 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 19.1 innings, and he lines up to face the White Sox again next week.
Aug 8 2020Boyd didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 17-13 extra-innings win over the Pirates, coughing up seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first trip to the mound since July 29 after Detroit's series against St. Louis was postponed, Boyd had difficulty locating his pitches. The southpaw threw 58 of 95 offerings for strikes, and when he did get the ball over the plate, he caught too much of it. Boyd has yet to find the ace-level form he's flashed the last two seasons, but his 13:5 K:BB through 14.2 innings at least suggests his 9.20 ERA and 1.91 WHIP are due for some major regression. His next start is scheduled for Wednesday, at home against the White Sox.
Aug 4 2020Boyd will start Friday against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd had been scheduled to start Tuesday against St. Louis, but that entire four-game midweek series was scrapped due to the Cardinals' coronavirus outbreak. The Tigers will use the unexpected days off to reset their rotation, going with their Opening Day starter for their first day back in action. Boyd has failed to impress in either of his first two starts of the season, allowing eight runs on 15 hits over 10 innings of work.
Aug 3 2020Boyd will not make his scheduled start Tuesday against St. Louis as the series has been postponed due to the Cardinals' coronavirus outbreak, Mark Saxon of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: 13 members of the Cardinals organization have tested positive for the virus, including seven players. The Tigers have yet to announce their rotation plans for their weekend series in Pittsburgh, which remains on the schedule, but Boyd presumably will start Friday's game.
Jul 29 2020Boyd allowed four earned runs on nine hits across five innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Royals. He struck out six against zero walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd had a similar line to his first start of the season, when he also allowed four earned runs across five innings. Like in that outing, the lefty struggled early against Kansas City, as the Royals did all of their damage in the first three innings before Boyd recorded two scoreless innings to end his night. The silver lining Tuesday was that Boyd had more swing-and-miss stuff, as he only recorded two strikeouts in his last start. Boyd will look to pitch better early in the game his next time out Monday against the Cardinals.
Jul 24 2020Boyd (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over five innings in a loss to the Reds on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This line is disappointing and it could have been worse. Boyd allowed five straight hitters to reach base -- walk, single, HBP, HBP, single -- before he recorded his first out. The lefty managed to limit the damage to two runs in that first inning, but he later gave up a homer to Joey Votto and the swing-and-miss stuff was just not there in this one. Fortunately, Boyd is in good position to bounce back with a home start against Kansas City next on the docket.
Jul 15 2020Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said that Boyd will be the team's Opening Day starter, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd missed an intrasquad outing Tuesday, noting that he was kept out of the stadium due to testing protocol. There was some thought that this delay in his throwing schedule could make him unavailable for Opening Day, but the lefty said he'd pitch on short rest next week to get back on track for the July 24 opener.
Jul 14 2020Boyd is scheduled to pitch in Wednesday's intrasquad game for the Tigers, which could put him out of the mix for a start on Opening Day, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Had Boyd pitched in Tuesday's intrasquad game, he would have lined up to throw again five days later, on July 19, and then have another five days before Opening Day on July 24. However, the Tigers elected to not use Boyd Tuesday, so either they have a slightly different schedule planned for the lefty or they don't intend to start him in the opener. Manager Ron Gardenhire has not formally named an Opening Day starter, though the assumption heading into summer camp was that Boyd would get the nod. Whether he starts in the first game or not, Boyd figures to be the team's ace this year, and he should rack up plenty of strikeouts even if wins are hard to come by on what is projected to be a rebuilding club.
Jul 7 2020Tigers pitching coach Rick Anderson said he expects Boyd and the other four members of the Detroit rotation to be stretched out to 75-to-80 pitches by Opening Day, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That sort of pitch count would put Boyd in line for roughly five innings in his first start, keeping him on track to handle close to a normal workload in his subsequent turns thereafter. Boyd will continue to use summer camp to build up his pitch count, though he had already kept his arm conditioned during MLB's hiatus by tossing about one simulated game per week. Before the league-wide shutdown in spring training, Boyd had been working to make more use of his changeup and curveball as part of a four-pitch mix this season after leaning on the offerings only 6.1 and 4.0 percent of the time, respectively, in 2019 (per FanGraphs).
Jun 24 2020Boyd said he's thrown one simulated game per week during the layoff to stay ready for game action, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd added that he recently got up to five innings of work. The lefty can now set his sights toward Opening Day, which is slated for about a month from now following a second spring training in early July. Detroit and other MLB teams are likely to be cautious with their starters to begin the abbreviated season, so Boyd may not go past five innings on the mound anytime soon.
Mar 16 2020Boyd said he plans on getting stronger in the weight room while spring training is suspended and his throwing program is interrupted, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd has remained at the Tigers' facility in Lakeland, Fla., and tried to look on the bright side of the delay, calling it an "awesome opportunity for us to get even stronger." The lefty struggled a bit down the stretch last season after a strong start, so perhaps the emphasis on strength training could help with his endurance whenever the 2020 campaign resumes.
Mar 10 2020Boyd, who allowed just one run across 4.1 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, has a 1.93 ERA this spring. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd has looked like the staff leader the Tigers need him to be. He did at times last year, too, as the lefty had a 2.85 ERA through the first two months of the season. However, Boyd struggled some after that and ultimately finished with a 4.56 ERA. The 29-year-old has elite strikeout potential, but he's yet to have a true breakout campaign.
Feb 24 2020Boyd took the loss in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros, allowing a solo home run and a walk across two innings of work. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outing was a microcosm of Boyd's 2019 campaign, as he gave up plenty of home runs (39, second most in the league) but also racked up the strikeouts (238 in 185.1 innings pitched). The southpaw continues to show glimpses of brilliance, but he's yet to sustain it across a full season. He'll line up as Detroit's unquestioned ace heading into 2020 and will look to improve his consistency on the mound.
Jan 10 2020Boyd and the Tigers avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.3 million deal Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd will more than double his $2.6 million salary from the 2019 season. The lefty saw his strikeout rate jump from 22.4 percent to 30.2 percent in his fifth big-league season, though his ERA rose slightly from 4.39 to 4.56.
Sep 28 2019Boyd (9-12) took the loss Saturday against the White Sox as he allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits across four innings. He walked one and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd wrapped up his 2019 campaign with a mediocre outing, and that's been the story for the lefty in the second half of the season. Before the All-Star break, he had a 3.87 ERA over 18 starts, but in the 14 games since, Boyd posted a 5.51 mark. The 28-year-old was still easily Detroit's best starter this year, and his 238:50 K:BB in 185.1 innings shows how dominant he can be at times. Boyd will search for more consistency heading into 2020.
Sep 22 2019Boyd (9-11) gave up three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six through five innings to earn the win over the White Sox on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd allowed two runs in the first inning, but he delivered three scoreless frames before surrendering another run in his last inning. The long ball continues to be a problem for Boyd, as he has allowed a league-leading 39 home runs. The 28-year-old has a 4.57 ERA with 234 strikeouts through 32 starts this season. Boyd is scheduled to make his next start in the first game of a doubleheader against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Sep 19 2019Boyd (personal) has rejoined the team and will start Sunday against the White Sox, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He attended the funeral of his paternal grandfather earlier this week but rejoined the team Thursday. Boyd has a 5.34 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 30.1 innings over his last five starts.
Sep 18 2019Manager Ron Gardenhire said Boyd (personal) is penciled in to start Sunday's game against the White Sox, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd left the team Monday to tend to a family issue in Seattle, forcing Detroit to break in reliever Zac Reininger as a spot starter for Tuesday's bullpen game against Cleveland. Though he remains away from the team, the southpaw apparently intends to return to Detroit at some point over the weekend, leaving him on track to make his next turn through the rotation. After a banner first half, Boyd has stumbled as the season nears the finish line, posting a 6.81 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over his last seven starts.
Sep 16 2019Boyd was scratched from his start Tuesday in Cleveland for personal reasons, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd will be away from the team for a few days for a family matter. It's not yet clear if he'll be skipped entirely or will simply see his start pushed back by a few days. The Tigers haven't announced their plans to cover for Boyd's absence, but they've temporarily gone to a six-man rotation with Tyler Alexander starting Monday, so they could simply slide the rest of their starters up a day to pitch on standard rest.
Sep 12 2019Boyd (8-11) took the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boyd gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, followed by another two-run blast in the third on the way to a 10-4 loss. He's now 2-2 over his last four starts, and he sits with a 4.54 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a 228:47 K:BB over 176.1 innings this season.

Jul 20 2018Boyd (4-9) allowed just a single run over five innings but was saddled with the loss Friday against the Red Sox. He gave up three hits and two walks, while striking out six.Boyd was good, but Boston starter David Price was better, keeping Detroit off the board for six innings. Three Red Sox relievers then combined to complete the shutout. The 27-year-old lefty had been struggling lately, and he still has a mediocre 4.62 ERA, but this was a nice start to the second half. Boyd will look to build on this in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday in Kansas City in what projects to be a favorable matchup.
Jul 10 2018Boyd (4-8) took the loss Tuesday against the Rays, allowing five earned runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight.Boyd actually pitched pretty well but he simply couldn't get out of trouble in the third inning, when all five Tampa Bay runs came across. A three-run home run by Wilson Ramos with two outs in the frame was the big blow. Boyd has allowed at least five earned runs in four of his last five starts, and he'll carry an uninspiring 4.76 ERA into his next outing, which is scheduled to come in the first game after the All-Star break.
Jul 10 2018Boyd, who is starting Tuesday against the Rays, will start the Tigers' first game after the All-Star break, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. In leagues with lengthy lineup periods around the All-Star break, this at least should allow Boyd to log two starts. He has a 4.58 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 92.1 innings this season.
Jul 5 2018Boyd (4-7) took the loss Thursday against the Rangers, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over four innings. He struck out three.Boyd didn't allow a run in the first inning, but then allowed multiple runs in the second, third and fourth before exiting the game. The key blows were a pair of two-run home runs by Joey Gallo and Ronald Guzman. Boyd has now allowed five or more earned runs three times over his past four starts, which has pushed his season ERA up to 4.58. Memories of the 3.23 ERA he held before this rough stretch are fading quickly, as Boyd is increasingly looking like a risky fantasy play. The lefty will try to turn it around in his next start, which is scheduled for Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
Jun 30 2018Boyd struck out seven batters while walking two Saturday against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on four hits, a homer and a pair of walks in six innings. He did not factor into the decision.Boyd didn't allow any hits through four innings but started to fall apart in the fifth, allowing a double, a single and a homer. He got out of the sixth to earn his quality start but was matched by the Jays' Sam Gaviglio, so neither pitcher earned a decision. Boyd's performance wasn't a dominant one, but it was a step back in the right direction after he allowed 11 runs in seven innings over his last two starts. He'll next take the mound Thursday against the Rangers.
Jun 24 2018Boyd gave up six runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five in three innings Sunday in Cleveland, picking up his sixth loss of the season. He has given up 11 runs in seven innings over his last two starts, and his ERA has skyrocketed from 3.23 to 4.15 over that span. Boyd didn't generate a single groundout in this game, which marked just the second time in 15 starts that he failed to get at least three outs on the ground. His next start will come next weekend in Toronto.
Jun 19 2018Boyd (4-5) took the loss Tuesday against the Reds, allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five.Boyd was sharp in the first two innings, but he started off the third by allowing two walks and a single to load the bases. Cincinnati slugger Joey Votto then cleared the bases with a grand slam, which was the big blow of the evening against Boyd. The five earned runs are the most allowed this season by the 27-year-old lefty. Boyd will still take a solid 3.63 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled for Monday against the Athletics.
Jun 13 2018Boyd allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings in Wednesday's win over the Twins. He did not factor into the decision.Boyd put himself in a lot of early holes, throwing first-pitch strikes to just four of the 21 batters he faced, and as a result he needed 106 pitches just to get through five innings. The lefty hasn't been overpowering opposing hitters (59:28 K:BB over 75.1 innings), but he's been effective nonetheless and now boasts a 3.23 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Next up is an interleague matchup Tuesday in Cincinnati.
Jun 7 2018Boyd (4-4) recorded the win Thursday against the Red Sox, allowing two earned runs on four hits and four walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six.The Tigers staked Boyd to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and the lefty made it stand up with a solid performance against a strong lineup on the road. Perhaps the only negative was the four walks, which matched a season high, but Boyd was able to avoid any real damage. He'll carry a 3.20 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled for Tuesday against the Twins.
Jun 2 2018Boyd allowed four runs on six hits and two walks across seven innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Saturday. He struck out three.Boyd pitched reasonably well Saturday, but a pair of two-run innings spoiled his bid for a quality start and left him with a no-decision. After not allowing a home run in May (six starts, 34 innings), Boyd served up a pair of solo homers -- to Yangervis Solarte and Luke Maile -- in his first start of June. He'll take a solid 3.23 ERA into his next start, which will be a tough road matchup against the Red Sox.
May 28 2018Boyd (3-4) tossed five innings of scoreless ball to record the win Monday against the Angels. He allowed two hits and three walks while striking out four. After leaving his last start on May 22 in the fifth inning with oblique spasms, this was a very positive effort for the 27-year-old lefty, who looked fully healthy and dominated a tough lineup. Perhaps the only negative was that it took Boyd 102 pitches to get through five innings, which kept him from going deeper into the game. Nonetheless, he'll carry a strong 3.00 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled for Saturday against the Blue Jays.
May 27 2018The Tigers are listing Boyd (oblique) as their scheduled starter for Monday's game against the Angels, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports.Boyd departed in the fifth inning of his last start May 22 against the Twins with oblique spasms, but his inclusion among Detroit's probable starters for the upcoming four-game series suggests he completed a bullpen session over the weekend without incident. Though he has seen his velocity drop a few ticks from 2017, Boyd has been the most dependable member of the Detroit rotation this season, allowing no more than four earned runs in any of his nine starts this season and posting a 41:17 K:BB across 52 frames. Boyd is in store for a double dip during the Tigers' seven-game week, with his second turn falling Saturday at home against the Blue Jays.
May 22 2018Boyd was pulled from Tuesday's game against the Twins with left oblique spasms, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Boyd lasted only four innings (61 pitches) and allowed two runs on one hit with two walks and four strikeouts. The 27-year-old started the fifth inning with back-to-back walks which prompted a visit from the athletic trainer, and he subsequently left the game. The initial diagnosis of oblique spasms rather than a strain is a good sign, but Boyd's status for his next expected start -- Monday against the Angels -- is currently up in the air.
May 17 2018Boyd didn't factor into the decision against Seattle on Thursday, despite a strong outing that saw him yield two earned runs on six hits over six innings with nine strikeouts and a walk as the Tigers eventually prevailed 3-1.The 27-year-old left-hander just continues to put up solid stat lines, as this marked his third quality start in his last four outings and the fifth time in his eight starts this year that he's held his opposition to two or fewer earned runs. He now has a 3.19 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP through 48 innings to go along with a 41:13 K:BB, so Boyd is providing all-around solid fantasy returns in the early going. It would be understandable to be weary of expecting him to keep this up all season since he's coming off a campaign that saw him log a 5.27 ERA in 135 innings and he has a 5.18 mark for his career, but for the time being, Boyd is throwing it like a pitcher that deserves to be on fantasy rosters.
May 12 2018Boyd (2-3) earned the win Saturday against the Mariners, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six across six innings.Boyd got the ball for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader after his Friday start was postponed. The southpaw retired the first eight batters he saw and made it through four scoreless before allowing a run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly. Having tossed six innings of one-run ball, Boyd attempted to head back out for the seventh frame but was yanked after allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base. Both inherited baserunners came around to score on Buck Farmer, adding the final two runs to Boyd's line, though he still walked away with his fifth quality start of the season. He'll carry a solid 3.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP into his next start, which will come on the road against the Mariners.
May 11 2018Boyd will start Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mariners after Friday's game was postponed due to rain.Boyd will have an extra day of rest for his matchup with the Mariners, a carries a 3.00 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 36 innings.
May 6 2018Boyd (1-3) took the loss Sunday against the Royals, allowing four earned runs over seven innings. He gave up six hits and a walk while striking out five.Boyd pitched reasonably well, as he only allowed seven baserunners in his seven innings of work, but he ran into some trouble in the third inning. After retiring the first two hitters in the frame, he gave up a single, a walk, a double and another single, and Kansas City had three runs and a 4-0 lead. Boyd will take a solid 3.00 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled for Saturday against the Mariners.
May 1 2018Boyd (1-2) picked up the win Tuesday against the Rays, allowing just one run over six innings. He gave up seven hits and a walk while striking out seven. This was a good rebound effort for Boyd, who gave up four runs across 3.2 innings in his last start. Tampa Bay ace Chris Archer gave up just two runs in his six innings of work, but Boyd was sharper in this one as he lowered his season ERA to a stellar 2.48. The seven strikeouts are also a season high. The 27-year-old will look to build on this strong start his next time out Sunday against the Royals, which projects to be another good matchup.
Apr 25 2018Boyd (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts over just 3.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Pirates.Boyd finally showed weakness after opening the season with three fantastic starts. He was undone by a three-run Jose Osuna home run in the second inning, and Boyd struggled with his control all day. He threw just 12 first-pitch strikes to 21 hitters as he walked three batters and needed 94 pitches to get just 11 outs. Boyd still owns a crisp 2.74 ERA, but he has walked six batters in his past two starts, and he'll need to tighten up if he wants to keep up his hot start.
Apr 21 2018Boyd had his next start bumped from Tuesday to Wednesday against the Pirates, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The only major result of the change for Boyd is an additional day of rest from last Wednesday's start. The 26-year-old has put together a fantastic start to the season with a 1.40 ERA and 0.67 WHIP and 11 strikeouts over 19.1 innings. Boyd has allowed only one run in each of his three starts and will look to continue his impressive run against the Pirates.
Apr 18 2018Boyd (0-1) had to settle for a no-decision in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Orioles, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over 6.1 innings while striking out six.The left-hander continued his impressive start to the season, as Boyd has given up exactly one run in each of his three outings, delivering a quality start each time. His 11:4 K:B in 19.1 innings indicates how much he's been relying on his defense, however, and just how fragile his 1.40 ERA actually is. Boyd will next take the mound Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
Apr 15 2018Boyd is listed as the probable starter for Wednesday's game against the Orioles.Boyd's third start of the season will come three days later than he was initially expected after postponements Saturday and Sunday against the Yankees forced the Tigers to push each of their starters back in the pitching schedule. While the shuffling of the schedule denied Boyd of a two step last week, he'll at least trade a matchup against a powerful Yankees squad with a more favorable one at home against an Orioles offense that ranked 23rd in the majors in terms of wRC+ entering play Sunday.
Apr 15 2018Boyd will not pitch Sunday against the Yankees after Game 1 of the doubleheader was postponed. The night game could still happen, but in that event, Francisco Liriano will take the ball. Boyd will either start Tuesday or Wednesday against the Orioles. Sunday's night game will need to happen in order for Boyd to make two starts next week.
Apr 10 2018Boyd pitched seven innings of one-run ball in a no-decision Tuesday against the Indians. He gave up just three hits and a walk while striking out four.Through two starts this year, Boyd has given up just two earned runs in 13 innings of work, but he's sitting at 0-1 due to lackluster run support. However, if the 27-year-old lefty keeps pitching like this, he should get into the win column soon. It's too early to fully trust Boyd after he posted a 5.27 ERA and 1.56 WHIP last season, but he's making positive strides. Up next is a tough test against the Yankees' powerful lineup on Sunday.
Apr 3 2018Boyd (0-1) was saddled with the loss Tuesday despite giving up just one run on four hits over six innings against the Royals. He struck out one batter and did not issue a walk.It was far from a dominant showing, and Boyd will face much tougher opponents next week in the Indians and Yankees. That being said, for a player who had a 5.27 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 135 innings last year, this was a step forward and provided some hope that Boyd could stick in the Tigers' rotation all year. That kind of projected volume gives him some appeal in deeper leagues, but even AL-only owners will want to pick their spots carefully. Boyd is not yet a recommended option for standard mixed formats.
Apr 1 2018Boyd will make his first start of the season Tuesday against the Royals, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The Tigers will push all their pitchers back a day in the schedule after rainouts Thursday and Saturday creating the need for a doubleheader Sunday against the Pirates that will result in Detroit playing six games in five days. Since Boyd had initially been scheduled to pitch Monday against the Royals, he'll miss out on a two-start week with Francisco Liriano taking the hill for the series opener.
Mar 28 2018Boyd is scheduled to start the Tigers' fourth game of the regular season on Monday at home against the Royals.Boyd was solid this spring, posting a 3.42 ERA and 26 strikeouts across 23.2 innings. However, Boyd also holds a career 5.47 ERA, so expectations should be tempered until he carries over the success into the regular season. The 27-year-old has some ability, but he's yet to put it together consistently at the MLB level. The rebuilding Tigers figure to give him plenty of chances to figure it out in 2018.
Mar 12 2018Boyd tossed three scoreless innings in Monday's Grapefruit League loss to the Nationals. He allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out three.Boyd had allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over his last six innings, so it was nice to see him a bit sharper on Tuesday. The young lefty dropped his spring training ERA to 4.09 with the strong performance, and he's on track to secure a spot in Detroit's rotation to begin the season.
Mar 7 2018Boyd is working on his offspeed pitches during spring training and could use them more this season, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.Boyd's hard-hit rate on curveballs and sliders last year was 13.5 percent, which was second best among qualified starters. The lefty is taking that success to heart, as he plans to diversify his pitches more and challenge hitters less frequently with his fastball. He said his slider is "definitely becoming more of a weapon for me, and something that I'll probably use a little more in the course of a game if the game dictates it more, too. I feel comfortable with it." Boyd posted a 5.27 ERA and 1.56 WHIP last season, but he's in line to secure a spot in Detroit's rotation nonetheless.
Feb 25 2018Boyd will be used as one of Detroit's starting pitchers throughout spring training, and is on track to begin the season as a member of the starting rotation, Anthony French of the Detroit Free Press reports.Boyd is in good shape to make the starting rotation for the 2018 campaign, although Alex Wilson, Buck Farmer and Daniel Norris are also competing to earn a spot in the starting five. The 27-year old was announced as one of the starting pitchers to be used throughout spring training and tossed one inning while giving up two hits and a run Sunday against the Blue Jays. Boyd looks to start the year near the back end of the Tigers' rotation.
Sep 29 2017Boyd (6-11) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings and took the loss Friday against the Twins.Boyd will end his season with just one win in his final seven decisions, a struck in which he owns a 5.14 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. He gave up a pair of home runs in Friday's start, his last of the season, giving him 18 over 25 starts, a big reason why he was ineffective. Over three seasons, Boyd has yet to post an ERA below 4.50.
Sep 23 2017Boyd (6-10) allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings, but received no decision Saturday against the Twins.Boyd pitched well and left the game with a 3-2 lead, which the bullpen promptly blew, keeping him from picking up his seventh win of the season. He's had a strong September, as he's allowed just seven earned runs over five starts to lower his ERA by more than a full run. His next start has yet to be determined.
Sep 17 2017Boyd (6-10) tossed a one-hit shutout while earning the win Sunday against the White Sox, allowing one walk with five strikeouts.Boyd came within an eyelash of a no-hitter in this one, allowing a double to Tim Anderson with two outs in the ninth inning. He worked up to 121 pitches, but he was allowed to finish the game off and did so with no additional issues. This gem came as something of a surprise for Boyd, who hadn't delivered a quality start in his last nine outings. He owns a disappointing 5.33 ERA on the year, but that mark sits at 2.16 over his last four starts ahead of Friday's turn against the Twins.
Sep 12 2017Boyd (5-10) took the loss against Cleveland on Tuesday, giving up only one run on six hits and a walk over five innings while striking out five.Unfortunately for the left-hander, Corey Kluber was on the mound for the Tribe, and Francisco Liriano's leadoff shot in the first inning was all the offense Cleveland's ace would need in a 2-0 win. Boyd hasn't managed to produce a quality start in his last nine trips to the mound, posting a 6.58 ERA over that stretch, but he'll try to build on this performance in his next outing Sunday at home against the White Sox.
Sep 6 2017Boyd (5-9) gave up four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks over six-plus innings Wednesday, suffering a loss against the Royals. He struck out four. The 26-year-old lefty battled opposing starter Jason Hammel to a 2-2 tie through six, but Boyd came out for the seventh and promptly gave up a pair of doubles before being removed; the bullpen then allowed the game to turn into a 13-2 rout. A star in the minors, Boyd has yet to put it all together at the big-league level, as his 5.93 ERA clearly indicates. He should be deployed with great caution (if at all) down the stretch.
Sep 1 2017Boyd gave up only one run on five hits and two walks over five innings while striking out five Friday, but he had to settle for a no-decision in a 3-2 loss to Cleveland. The lefty ran up his pitch count in what was otherwise a strong performance, throwing 61 of 98 pitches for strikes before exiting the game with the score knotted at 1-1. Boyd should remain in the Tigers rotation for the rest of the season with Justin Verlander in Houston and Michael Fulmer (elbow) shut down, but his 6.19 ERA in the second half doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
Aug 27 2017Boyd (5-8) allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk across six innings while taking the loss Sunday against the White Sox. He struck out seven.Boyd was actually quite effective aside from a third-inning collapse in which he allowed five runs on five runs on five hits, including a three-run home run by Matt Davidson. He threw a hefty 74 percent of pitches for strikes, including first-pitch strikes to 23 of 26 batters, but he was made to pay for numerous location errors. Boyd has endured a miserable run of form lately, allowing a whopping 25 earned runs over 23.2 innings over his last six outings. He will take a disappointing 6.32 ERA into Friday's start against the Indians.
Aug 23 2017Manager Brad Ausmus was critical of Boyd following Tuesday's outing (seven runs allowed in 2.1 innings), but said the left-hander will likely remain in the rotation with the Tigers out of the playoff hunt, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.Ausmus was fairly blunt in his comments about Boyd, who's given up 17 earned runs on 23 hits and nine walks over his last 13.1 innings. "At some point, there's an expiration date on how much rope you're given," Ausmus said. "The truth is, (Boyd) is going to have to learn to pitch or there's going to be a move made." However, that move likely won't come this season, as the Tigers are just 54-70 and well out of the race in the American League. "There's no reason to not be patient at this point," Ausmus said. "And I don't think the next month and a week will decide anything definitively. But in the big picture, it can't go on forever."
Aug 22 2017Boyd (5-7) was slapped with seven runs and a loss after pitching just 2.1 innings against the Yankees on Tuesday. He allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out two. There have been stretches in which Boyd has played the part of a competent-looking MLB starter, but those must feel like a distant memory to his embattled fantasy owners. Over his last four appearances, Boyd has been mauled for 17 earned runs on 23 hits and nine walks over 13.1 innings; those are fantasy-season-ruining numbers. That said, he's still only 26 and left-handed with spectacular minor-league stats (career 2.49 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 9.0 K/9), so there's still some long-term appeal here.
Aug 19 2017Boyd pitched 1.1 innings of relief in Friday's loss to the Dodgers, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two.It was announced earlier in the week that Boyd's next start would be bumped back from Saturday to Tuesday, so it appears the team just wanted to have him throw a bit before then, and he ended up tossing 30 pitches. After surrendering nine runs over his last two starts, Boyd will be looking to get back on track against the Yankees next week.
Aug 16 2017Boyd will make his next start Tuesday against the Yankees, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Boyd was initially lined up to start Saturday against the Dodgers, but after the left-hander had surrendered nine runs over his last two outings, manager Brad Ausmus decided it was best to give Boyd some extra time off. Michael Fulmer and Justin Verlander will both be moved up a day in the schedule to pitch on their normal four days' rest Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Aug 13 2017Boyd (5-6) recorded a no-decision in Sunday's loss to the Twins. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings, while striking out five.Boyd pitched better than his last start, when he gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits in just four innings. The young left-hander was victimized by the long ball, as he gave up a home run to Brian Dozier to lead off the game, then allowed a two-run bomb to Miguel Sano in the third inning. Boyd will look to improve upon this effort in his next scheduled start Saturday, though he's got a tough assignment against the Dodgers.
Aug 8 2017Boyd (5-6) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk across four innings in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates. He struck out five.Boyd threw a hearty 70 percent of his pitches for strikes, but he routinely missed over the plate and paid the price on several occasions. He gave up a run on the third before he was tagged for three in the fourth and two more in the fifth. albeit with an error involved. Boyd appeared to be making strides when he fired off three straight quality starts at the end of July, but he has now allowed nine runs in 8.1 innings over his last two starts. He will try to get back on track Sunday against the Twins.
Aug 3 2017Boyd allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six batters through 4.1 innings during Thursday's win over Baltimore. He didn't factor into the decision.Boyd had to wait through two rain delays before taking the mound, so it's difficult to put too much emphasis on Thursday's outing. Still, the 26-year-old southpaw has struggled to gain any fantasy traction this season with a 5.35 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 6.7 K/9, and outside of the deepest settings, he's not currently a serviceable option. Boyd projects to face the Pirates at PNC Park in his next start.
Jul 29 2017Boyd (5-5) allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out five over 7.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against the Astros.Boyd gave up a pair of runs in the first inning before settling down, and the Tigers came up with three runs in the seventh inning to help him earn his fifth victory of the year. Although he performed well against a strong Astros' offense, his 5.30 ERA and 1.62 WHIP make him a player who's difficult to trust in fantasy lineups. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Orioles.
Jul 23 2017Boyd (4-5) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight batters through six innings during Sunday's win over Minnesota.Boyd has allowed at least three runs in each of his past nine games and sports an underwhelming 5.48 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 6.4 K/9 for the campaign. Those numbers aren't moving the fantasy needle in most settings, so while it's encouraging that Boyd has won consecutive starts, expectations should remain in check. He lines up to face the Astros at Comerica Park in his next start.
Jul 18 2017Boyd (3-5) gave up three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three in Tuesday's win over Kansas City. This marks his first victory since the middle of April and his ERA is still 5.58, which should give you an idea of Boyd's fantasy value at this point. His terrific minor-league track record suggests that Boyd may turn the corner one day, but there's been no sign of him carrying that success forward into the big leagues so far.
Jul 1 2017Boyd was called up prior to Saturday's doubleheader to serve as the team's 26th man.Boyd was originally slated to start one of Saturday's game, but will merely serve as another arm out of the bullpen following Friday's rainout. He has struggled during his time in the big leagues this season, posting a 5.69 ERA with a 1.77 WHIP. Recording just 37 strikeouts (opposed to 24 walks) in 55.1 innings, Boyd hasn't been providing much in terms of fantasy value.
Jul 1 2017Boyd was optioned back to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.Boyd was brought up as the 26th man to start the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Royals, but will head back to Toledo following a rough afternoon. The young southpaw was gave up four runs -- all earned -- on seven hits over just 3.2 innings, raising his major league ERA to 5.69 on the season. Look for Boyd to be a top option if the Tigers need an extra arm down the road.
Jun 30 2017Boyd is no longer in line to start a game Saturday following Friday's postponement. The Tigers will go with Anibal Sanchez in the matinee and Jordan Zimmermann in the nightcap against Cleveland. There's still a chance Boyd could come up, but it would merely be to provide bullpen help, likely as the 26th man for the twin bill.
Jun 28 2017Boyd will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start one game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Indians, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.Boyd, who was banished to the minors on June 2, will serve as the 26th man in the doubleheader, meaning he'll likely head back to Toledo once the twin bill is completed. Jordan Zimmermann is in line to start the other half of the doubleheader. Since moving to Triple-A, Boyd has performed admirably, albeit against lower-caliber competition. In five starts, he's compiled a 3.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 32:8 K:BB over 27 innings.
Jun 28 2017Boyd is a likely option to start one of the Tigers' doubleheader games on Saturday against the Indians, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. The southpaw was pulled just four innings into his Triple-A start Tuesday night, prompting speculation he was receiving a call to the majors. Boyd, who made 11 starts with the Tigers before being sent down, will get a another chance to prove his place in the big leagues after posting a 5.69 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in his earlier stint, but most likely heads back to Toledo following the outing. Jordan Zimmerman is on tap to start the other game Saturday.
Jun 2 2017Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.Boyd has had a rough season out of starting rotation for Detroit, posting a 5.69 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP over 11 starts, so he'll head down to the minors as he works out the kinks. The southpaw remains a viable option for a call-up later this season, but his 7.28 ERA over the month of May simply couldn't justify a starting spot. It remains unclear who will take his spot in the rotation, though recently-recalled Warwick Saupold represents a likely option. Reliever Daniel Stumpf was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jun 1 2017Boyd allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out just a single batter over 3.2 innings during Wednesday's win over Kansas City. He didn't factor into the decision. The southpaw has surrendered at least three runs in each of his past seven starts for a 6.63 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and an underwhelming 5.6 K/9. Boyd will need to turn things around in a hurry or his rotation spot could be in jeopardy, if it isn't already. He's certainly off the fantasy radar for the time being. A home start against the Angels is on deck, and without Mike Trout, Los Angeles doesn't project as a daunting matchup.
May 21 2017Boyd (2-4) allowed four runs on 12 hits with no walks across 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Rangers. He struck out three.Boyd had no trouble finding the strike zone, posting his first outing without issuing a walk this season, but he gave up a constant procession of base-hits and was removed shortly after surrendering a solo home run to Pete Kozma with one out in the sixth inning. Boyd fired the third of a trio of quality starts earlier this month, but he has since allowed 11 runs in his last 7.2 innings to grow his ERA to 5.36. His poor 33:21 K:BB has made it difficult for him to string successful outings together, and he will look to improve on this figure Friday against the White Sox.
May 17 2017Boyd allowed seven earned runs in eight hits and two walks over 2.1 innings Tuesday. He struck out one in a no-decision.It was a tough outing for the 26-year-old southpaw, who saw his ERA balloon to 5.18 on the season. Detroit's bats took him off the hook for what would have been his third consecutive loss. The lefty now owns an unimpressive 30:21 K:BB to go with a 1.61 WHIP; it's best to keep your distance from Boyd unless the right matchup presents itself. He'll toe the rubber again on Sunday at home against Texas.
May 11 2017Boyd (2-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Diamondbacks. The left-hander has now provided quality starts in five of his last six outings, but his 3.89 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 29:19 K:BB in 39.1 innings on the season leave a lot to be desired. Boyd faces a tough challenge in his next start Tuesday at home against the Orioles.
May 3 2017Boyd (2-2) gave up three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 7.2 innings in Wednesday's loss to Cleveland. He pitched well, shutting the Indians down outside of a three-run rally in the fourth inning, but Carlos Carrasco was just a bit better on the other end. Boyd has put a lot of runners on base this year, and that 23:16 K:BB is far from inspiring, yet he owns a decent 3.78 ERA. That seems destined to rise as his luck balances out, so Boyd should be started with great caution in fantasy.
Apr 29 2017Boyd (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over seven innings but came away with a no-decision in Friday's 7-3 loss to the White Sox.It was the left-hander's longest outing of the season so far. Boyd pounded the strike zone, throwing 70 of 97 pitches for strikes, but still walked multiple batters for the fifth time in five starts, and his 19:13 K:BB through 25.2 innings is far from impressive. His next start will come Wednesday at home against Cleveland.
Apr 22 2017Boyd was ejected from Saturday's game in the fifth inning after throwing behind Minnesota's Miguel Sano, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Both of the benches briefly cleared Saturday following Boyd's incident with Sano, but the situation was quickly resolved. Boyd allowed two earned runs over 4.1 innings while notching three strikeouts and three walks. His truncated outing does not help a taxed Detroit bullpen that had to pitch three innings Friday after Justin Verlander was touched up for four earned runs.
Apr 16 2017Boyd (2-1) picked up the win Sunday against the Indians by tossing six innings of one-run ball. He allowed seven hits and struck out three.Boyd struggled in his first start of the season, but he's been great in his last two. The lefty battled veteran Anibal Sanchez for the No. 5 spot in the rotation during spring training, and he's definitely tightening his grip on the role. Boyd will look to keep rolling in his next start Saturday in Minnesota.
Apr 11 2017Boyd (1-1) tossed six shutout innings and picked up the win Tuesday against the Twins. He allowed just one hit and two walks and struck out six.He held the Twins hitless until a Robbie Grossman single with two outs in the fifth inning. After a rough debut in which Boyd gave up five runs in just 2.1 innings, the young lefty turned things around in a big way in this one. His next start will come Sunday in Cleveland.
Apr 7 2017Boyd (0-1) was hammered for five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two over 2.1 innings in Thursday's 11-2 drubbing at the hands of the White Sox.Rust may have played a factor in Boyd's lack of sharpness, as rain has played havoc with the Tigers' early-season schedule, but that's small consolation to fantasy GMs who took a chance on him after his impressive spring. If there was any silver lining here for the left-hander it's that Anibal Sanchez was just as bad in relief, so even if Boyd's on a short leash his rotation spot isn't in immediate jeopardy. He'll try to rebound Tuesday at home against the Twins.
Apr 5 2017Boyd will make his first start of the season Thursday against the White Sox.Boyd had been slated to start the series opener against Boston, but weather delays have forced an alteration in the Tigers' rotation. The southpaw compiled a 5.03 ERA and a 16:5 K:BB ratio in four starts against the White Sox last season.
Apr 5 2017Boyd is now scheduled to make his 2017 debut Thursday against the White Sox.Boyd will actually move up a day following Wednesday's postponement, while Jordan Zimmermann and Daniel Norris will both be pushed back. The 26-year-old lefty endured some growing pains in 20 appearances (18 starts) at the major-league level last season, but he was quite good in July and August with sub-3.00 ERAs in both months. He posted a 23:1 K:BB in 25.2 innings this spring.
Mar 28 2017Boyd will serve as the Tigers' No. 5 starter to begin the 2017 season, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.Anibal Sanchez was informed Tuesday that he will start the season in the bullpen, meaning that Boyd has secured the No. 5 spot in the rotation. The 26-year-old has impressed in camp, posting a 2.49 ERA and 21:0 K:BB ratio over 21.2 innings. With his stellar spring performance, Boyd is a worth a look as a late-round option in fantasy drafts.
Mar 25 2017Boyd pitched five scoreless innings in Friday's spring training win over the Braves. He allowed three hits and struck out five.Boyd continues to do everything he can to lock down the No. 5 spot in the rotation. He has a 2.49 spring training ERA, and he's struck out 21 while issuing zero walks. "He continues to pitch consistently well," manager Brad Ausmus told Jason Beck of MLB.com. "As well as anyone in camp." Boyd is battling veteran Anibal Sanchez for the spot.
Mar 19 2017Boyd pitched five innings and got the win in Sunday's spring training game against the Orioles, allowing six hits and just one earned run. He struck out four.In his last two outings, Boyd has allowed only a single run on nine hits in 10 innings, while striking out nine. The strong performances should help the 26-year-old lock up the No. 5 spot in the rotation to begin the season.
Mar 14 2017Boyd took another step toward securing the No. 5 spot in the rotation with a strong spring training performance Tuesday, MLive.com reports.Boyd scattered three hits across five innings while striking out five. Boyd has seemingly grown his lead for the No. 5 spot over veterans Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey, who have both struggled this spring. "Nothing's guaranteed," Boyd said. "I've just got to keep working hard, and let someone else make that decision." Boyd certainly has a lot more upside than Sanchez or Pelfrey.
Mar 10 2017Boyd may be close to cementing the No. 5 spot in the Tigers rotation after allowing one run on three hits while striking out four over three innings of Grapefruit League work Thursday, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports. The southpaw has a 6.75 ERA over 6.2 spring grames but has struck out seven without a walk, which stakes a good case for him ahead of Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey. AL-only fantasy players could gain a productive asset in taking Boyd for the back end of their rotation.
Feb 26 2017Boyd went two scoreless innings in his spring training debut, giving up two hits and striking out two.Boyd, who appears to have the inside track on the No. 5 spot in the rotation, threw 32 pitches, 23 for strikes. A strong spring would help Boyd hold off the likes of Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey for that last rotation spot.
Feb 10 2017Boyd appears to be the early leader for the team's No. 5 starter job, but he'll have to fend off some veteran challengers in spring training, The Detroit News reports.Boyd had an up-and-down 2016 season, which isn't uncommon for young pitchers, and finished with a 6-5 record to go along with a 4.53 ERA. But the Tigers like how he finished the year, and he seems to have the early edge on veterans Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey to start the year in the rotation. All three figure to get opportunities to start in spring training.
Sep 25 2016Boyd was knocked out of Sunday's game against the Royals without retiring a batter. He faced five batters and gave up two singles, a double, a triple and a home run, and was charged with four runs on five hits.Boyd would love to hit rewind and start Sunday all over again. It was a far cry from his mastery five days ago when he allowed just a single run on three hits over eight innings, striking out seven and walking just one.
Sep 21 2016Boyd (6-4) pitched eight fantastic innings, limiting the Twins to one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven in Tuesday's victory.Boyd matched his career-high strikeout total Tuesday en route to his first win his since Aug. 24. The southpaw threw 68 percent of his pitches for strikes, inducing a large amount of swings and misses (13), while lowering his ERA to 4.16. It was an encouraging bounce-back effort following one of Boyd's worst starts of the season. The 25-year-old sophomore has allowed three runs or fewer in 11 of his 12 starts since the All-Star break. Boyd will take the hill Monday against Cleveland for his next start.
Sep 13 2016Boyd (5-4) was crushed for 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs, eight hits and one walk while striking out two in Tuesday's loss to the Twins. The outing was far and away Boyd's worst since returning from the DL in early July. Before Tuesday, he hadn't allowed more than three runs in an outing since June 18 while posting a 5-1 record over 10 starts in that time. Getting hammered by one of MLB's worst lineups can certainly be discouraging for fantasy owners, but Boyd's second-half performance to date is deserving of at least one free pass. The southpaw will look to rebound when he toes the rubber for his next start Sunday in Cleveland.
Sep 7 2016Boyd (5-3) allowed another long ball on the road, but overall, he pitched well, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven frames in a loss to the White Sox on Tuesday. He also struck out six and walked one.Jose Abreu hit a solo homer in the second off Boyd, and that's all Chicago would need, as they went on to win 2-0. Boyd has give up eight home runs in just 43.1 innings away from Comerica Park, which has led to a 4.74 road ERA, but overall, he is 5-3 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.
Sep 6 2016Boyd was officially recalled ahead of Tuesday's start against the White Sox in Chicago. He was optioned down just a week ago but Boyd was eligible to return to the big club with Triple-A Toledo's season ending Monday. Boyd has turned in respectable numbers in 16 appearances (14 starts) with Detroit this season but he's had issues with the long ball, especially on the road (5.20 ERA).
Aug 29 2016Boyd allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts but lasted just four innings in a no-decision Monday against the White Sox.Boyd allowed the first two batters in the fifth inning to reach as well, but luckily for him, reliever Alex Wilson was able to stem the threat or else his line would look a whole lot worse. Boyd induced 11 swinging strikes but was having trouble finding the zone -- he managed just 11 called strikes in 94 pitches. Boyd has shown flashes of brilliance, but due to his inconsistency, his ERA sits at a middling 4.00.
Aug 25 2016Boyd (5-2) gave up three runs on five hits and a walk over six innings Wednesday, striking out seven Twins in a 9-4 win.He gave up a couple more homers, continuing what's been a perpetual issue on that front -- Boyd now owns an awful 1.57 HR/9. That's far better than last year's nightmarish 2.67 mark, but it leaves Boyd on the low end for fantasy purposes. His moderate strikeout rate and long-ball-friendly tendencies have made him a dicey play on a start-to-start basis. On the bright side, though, Boyd has delivered three consecutive quality outings, giving up just four runs on 12 hits in 19 innings over that span -- which notably includes starts against the Red Sox and Rangers, two strong offenses.
Aug 18 2016Boyd (4-2) pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four in a no-decision Thursday against the Red Sox.The young left-hander tied his career high of 106 pitches while navigating his way through the dangerous Red Sox lineup like a veteran Thursday. That makes two straight impressive starts for Boyd, who allowed just two hits while tossing seven scoreless innings last time out against the Rangers. Boyd's efforts lowered his ERA to 3.93, its best mark in more than two months. His next scheduled start is set for Wednesday in Minnesota against a Twins team he limited to just three hits over six scoreless innings back on July 18.
Aug 10 2016Boyd will start against the Rangers on Saturday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.Boyd will have a week between starts when he takes the mound Saturday, after pitching against the Mets this past Saturday. He got the win, only allowing three earned runs off six hits and three walks while striking out five. Boyd also made a relief appearance Tuesday, tossing a scoreless inning against the Mariners.
Aug 6 2016Boyd (3-2) allowed three runs on six hits, struck out five and walked three over five innings in a victory over the Mets on Saturday. The lefty tossed up two bombs for the second straight outing, but they were of the solo variety, and the Tigers offense spotted Boyd six runs. The 25-year-old was also uncharacteristically wild, walking three batters for the first time in nearly two months, but none of them came around to score. Boyd is now 3-2 with a 4.77 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 54.2 innings.
Aug 2 2016Boyd will remain in the Tigers' rotation for now, ESPN's Katie Strang reports. With Mike Pelfrey (back) landing on the 15-day DL on Tuesday, Boyd will take the ball on Saturday against the Mets after beating out Daniel Norris for the last spot in the rotation with some solid recent starts. Boyd's 4.71 ERA doesn't tell the whole story, as he has a 2.35 ERA in the second half and a 1.27 WHIP on the season, so he is worth a look in deeper leagues.
Jul 30 2016Boyd is 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA, 23 strikeouts and just four walks in 20.1 innings of work in July.Boyd has been a much better pitcher since his early July return from Triple-A. His control is sharp and he's commanding his fastball well. His overall ERA remains high at 4.71, but baseball is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league. Boyd could be a sneaky fantasy play going forward based on his most recent work.
Jul 29 2016Boyd (2-2) pitched five innings, allowing three runs, four hits and a walk while striking out six Astros in Friday's win.Boyd was able to cruise to his second victory of the season thanks to a nine run explosion by the Tigers offense in the first two innings Friday. He threw 100 pitches for just the third time this year while allowing multiple home runs for the third time, too. The southpaw has won two straight decisions and will go for number three Thursday at home against the White Sox.
Jul 18 2016Boyd (1-2) had easily his best start of the season on Monday, shutting out the Twins over six innings. He allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out seven in the win.Boyd's seven strikeouts matched a season high. The 25-year-old has allowed just one run in 11 innings of work this month, striking out 13 compared to three walks. Boyd will try to keep the strong play going when he takes the mound against the White Sox this Saturday.
Jul 8 2016Boyd will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Saturday's game at Toronto.Boyd will get to face his former team Saturday after posting a 2.25 ERA in 11 starts this season with Toledo. However, he has a 6.44 ERA and 4.99 xFIP in 29.1 innings in the big leagues this year, and Saturday's matchup is not ideal, so it would be best to stay away for now in most formats.
Jun 18 2016Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following his loss to the Royals on Saturday.Following the loss to Kansas City, Boyd's ERA moved to 6.44 over 29.1 innings on the season for Detroit. The 25-year-old has fared much better in Triple-A, however, compiling a 2.06 ERA over 48 innings of work.
Jun 14 2016Boyd allowed six runs in 4.1 innings in a no-decision Monday against the White Sox. Chicago collected seven hits and two walks while striking out three times. The six runs allowed were more than he had allowed in his two previous starts combined. For the month he has struck out 11 batters compared to eight walks. Boyd will carry a 4.91 ERA into his start Saturday against the Royals.
Jun 2 2016Boyd tossed 6.1 innings during Thursday's loss against Yankees, and allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while fanning three.Boyd got off to a good start in this game retiring the first 15 batters he faced, but he couldn't escape the seventh inning in which he allowed four runs. The 25-year-old lefty threw his longest outing of the season, but he also conceded a season-high mark in runs. The Tigers haven't announced if Boyd will remain in the rotation, and the spot for Tuesday against the Blue Jays currently lists a TBD.
May 28 2016Boyd made his first start of the season Saturday against Oakland, earning a no decision while striking out seven. His final line was 5.0 IP, 6 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks and those 7 strikeouts, which matched a career high. He whiffed the first four batters he faced.
May 27 2016Boyd will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Saturday's game against the A's.Boyd has pitched 48 innings for Toledo this season, sporting a 2.06 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP while holding opposing batters to a .232 average. The 25-year-old earned an appearance with the Tigers earlier this season, tossing 4.2 shutout innings against the Indians in April. During Boyd's brief major-league career with the Blue Jays and the Tigers, he holds a 1-6 record with a 6.97 ERA during 62 innings of work. A corresponding move will be announced prior to Saturday's game.
May 27 2016Boyd will be called up from Triple-A Toledo before Saturday's game against the A's, and will start the game on the mound.Boyd has pitched 48 innings for Toledo this season, sporting a 2.06 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP while holding opposing batters to a .232 average.
May 22 2016Boyd struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed two runs on six hits over six innings on Friday at Lehigh Valley. He's 1-3 on the season with a 2.06 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in eight starts at Triple-A. Boyd has a four-pitch repertoire and will likely pitch in the Tiger's rotation in 2017, if not before.
Apr 24 2016Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's 6-3 loss to Cleveland.Recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, Boyd held the Indians scoreless over the final 4.2 innings of Sunday's game. He'll need a few days off after throwing 69 pitches, but it won't be surprising if he's called back up within the next couple weeks.
Apr 23 2016Boyd has been recalled from Triple-A, reports MLive's Chris Lott.Boyd has a started three games with the Toledo Mud Hens and has a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings. He has allowed 16 hits, walked five and struck out 16. It's not certain if Boyd will deploy as a starter or in long relief.
Mar 30 2016Boyd was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday.Boyd posted a strong spring while competing for the fifth starter spot, but the Tigers apparently felt that Shane Greene was the better option for the role to begin the season. His strong showing this spring could help him get onto the major league roster during the season if anything happens to the current rotation in Detroit, though.
Mar 26 2016Boyd appears set to begin the season in Triple-A with Shane Greene moving into the rotation while Daniel Norris is out with a back injury, the Detroit News reports.Boyd has a 4.24 ERA this spring and an impressive 16:5 K:BB ratio in 17 innings. However, he gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings in his last start Thursday. The Tigers will decide between Boyd and Greene in the next few days for the fifth starter role.
Mar 20 2016Boyd remains a long shot to win the job as the fifth starter, reports MLive.com.Daniel Norris and Shane Greene appear to be first in line for the fifth spot, but Boyd is still in camp. Boyd has a 3.29 ERA in 13.2 innings pitched this spring, but more importantly, he has fired 13 strikeouts to just 12 hits. He's still likely to start the season with the Toledo Mud Hens, but his development has clearly taken a step forward. Boyd's leg kick is now lower and (hopefully) easier to repeat than the high one he used last year. Boyd's future is improving.
Sep 30 2015Boyd was roughed up Wednesday by a strong Texas lineup. He allowed seven hits, including three home runs, and gave up six runs in just 2.2 innings of work. This was the 16th time this season the young hurler has failed to make it to the fourth inning -- that's tied for most in all of major league baseball. Gulp. He's a fly-ball guy and he serves up a lot of taters, especially when his fastball starts to flatten out and he leaves his change-up high in the zone. Maybe he just got hit hard, but there's also a school of thought that his upside as a number three starter might be hard to attain.
Sep 25 2015Boyd allowed four runs (two earned) on one hit, walking four and striking out four over six innings, but came away with a no-decision against the Twins on Friday night. He flashes glimpses of ability, but he struggles to find the plate at times and his ERA, while improving, still sits at an ugly 6.91 on the year. This is an audition for 2016, and there have been some positive signs, but the youngster is going to need to show more consistent command.

He struck out six.Boyd has been getting progressively better in each September start, with his number of earned runs surrendered decreasing in each appearance and his innings, pitch count, and strikeouts all increasing. The rookie southpaw has endured the typical up-and-down season of a young pitcher, and figures to get two additional opportunities to showcase his wares before the conclusion of the 2015 campaign.
Sep 12 2015Boyd will not start as scheduled Sunday, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.Boyd was in line to start the first game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Indians, but Cleveland and Detroit were postponed Saturday for the second day in a row, so Justin Verlander will move back a day and replace Boyd in the rotation. It remains to be seen if Boyd will be pushed back a day or if his spot will be skipped.
Sep 11 2015Boyd's scheduled start Saturday will be pushed back to Sunday as part of a doubleheader.Boyd will start the first contest of the doubleheader, while Randy Wolf will toe the rubber in Game 2. Sep 3 2015Boyd got an early hook Thursday against Kansas City after being roughed up for seven hits, two walks and six runs while failing to record an out in the second inning.Fortunately, he was able to avoid the loss, with Edinson Volquez getting bombed on the other end, but this is yet another implosion by Boyd, whose horror-show 8.36 ERA and 1.83 WHIP make him fantasy poison right now. He's got long-term upside, but it's hard to imagine a situation where he's startable this season.
Aug 28 2015Boyd was touched up for five runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out four over six innings of a 5-3 loss to Toronto on Friday night.Boyd (1-5, 7.12 ERA) found that facing his former teammates was not the key to a lower ERA as the heavy-hitting Jays got to him for three long ones. The southpaw came over to Detroit in the David Price deal, and the Tigers have given him a rotation spot as they evaluate for next season. So far, lack of consistent command has haunted him, and his fantasy value is minimal right now.
Aug 23 2015Boyd tossed a quality start against the Rangers on Sunday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings, but was stuck with his fourth loss of the season. The quality start was Boyd's second in six turns this season. He went toe to toe with Rangers ace Cole Hamels for most of the contest, but gave up the lead on a two-run double by Mitch Moreland in the sixth. While Detroit has not formally announced plans for Boyd moving forward, it seems likely he will remain in the rotation until Anibal Sanchez or Daniel Norris return from the DL.

His teammates got no runs and only four hits off Johnny Cueto.

He struck out two and picked up his first career win.The outing was a stark contrast to his previous two games with Toronto, including one on July 2 where he didn't record an out, but allowed seven runs. The 24-year-old Boyd wasn't any better in a couple of starts earlier this season for the Blue Jays, but posted a combined 1.65 ERA across 19 starts at Double and Triple-A this season. Boyd was a 6th-round pick of the Blue Jays in the 2013 draft. Jun 27 2015Boyd had trouble keeping the ball in the park in his major league debut, allowing four runs on nine hits (including three home runs) over 6.2 innings, and striking out seven without walking a batter. The K:BB ratio is probably impressive enough to keep him in the rotation for now, and Boyd's next start will likely come on Thursday, at home against Boston. He'll need to avoid serving up more gopher balls if he wants to stake out a place in the Jays' long-term plans, however.
Jun 26 2015Boyd was scratched from Thursday's scheduled start for Triple-A Buffalo, suggesting that he will likely be called up to start Saturday's game against the Rangers, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Although Todd Redmond is listed as Saturday's probable starter, he struggled as a reliever Monday night against Tampa Bay, and the Jays may not want to give him a start. He posted a 1.10 ERA, 2.69 FIP, 8.6 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 12 starts (73.2 innings) for Double-A New Hampshire this season, making the former ninth-round selection one of the more promising arms in the Toronto organization, even though he's never been viewed as a top prospect.
Jun 26 2015Boyd was called up from Triple-A Buffalo after Friday's game, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. There was plenty of speculation after Boyd was scratched from his scheduled start for Buffalo on Thursday that he would start for the big club Saturday opposite Yovani Gallardo, and the team has confirmed as much. Boyd, 24, posted a minuscule 1.10 ERA in 12 starts for Double-A New Hampshire to begin the year, and he enjoyed similar success in his first two starts for Buffalo (three earned runs, 12:0 K:BB in 12 innings).
