Jun 28 2025Schwarber went 1-for-4 with two walks, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Friday's 13-0 rout of Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran slugger crushed a Michael Petersen cutter to right-center field in the third inning, the Phillies' fifth homer of the night and Schwarber's 25th of the season. Three of those long balls have come in the last eight games, a stretch in which he's batting .310 (9-for-29) with two of his seven steals on the year, as well as four RBI and eight runs.
Jun 22 2025Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Sunday's 7-1 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber tagged David Peterson for a solo homer in the fourth inning, marking the slugger's fourth home run in his last 11 outings. During that stretch, Schwarber is 11-for-40 (.275) with nine RBI, 11 runs scored and two strikeouts. On the year, he has the fifth-most homers in baseball.
Jun 19 2025Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 2-1 win over Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber cracked homer No. 23 for the season and his fourth of the month of June so far. The veteran slugger has seen his average dip a bit -- he's now hitting .241 this year after batting .262 as of May 17 -- but that hasn't impeded his power production very much. Over his last 136 plate appearances (31 games), Schwarber is slashing .211/.338/.474 with eight long balls, six doubles and 20 RBI to go with 20 runs scored.
Jun 13 2025Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 8-0 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber handed the Phillies a four-run lead in the second inning when he took Kevin Gausman deep to center field for a 410-foot, three-run homer. Schwarber has struggled at the plate since the beginning of June (5-for-38), but he has gone deep in back-to-back games, and his 22 home runs this season ranks second in the National League behind Shohei Ohtani (23).
Jun 11 2025Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old slugger swiped his fifth bag of the year in the first inning on a double steal with Trea Turner before coming around to score, and Schwarber then obliterated a Ben Brown fastball in the third, sending it 431 feet to right field with an exit velocity of 109.6 mph. Schwarber's .921 OPS so far this season would be his best performance in that category since he posted a career-high .928 in 2021, and through 68 games he's left the yard 21 times, putting him on pace for a shot at his first career 50-homer campaign.
Jun 7 2025Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber snapped a brief eight-game homerless dry spell, clubbing his 20th long ball of the season. The veteran slugger has managed to hit for a healthy average in 2025, as he's slashing .265/.363/.603 with 13 big flies, seven doubles, 28 RBI and two stolen bases across his last 157 plate appearances (36 games). Schwarber trails only Shohei Ohtani for the National League lead in homers so far.
May 24 2025Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, a walk, three RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 9-6 extra-innings win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber put the Phillies ahead 4-3 with a solo shot in the sixth inning, and he added a two-run double in the 11th to give them the lead for good. With the long ball, Schwarber has retaken the National League lead with 18 homers through Saturday's action. The slugger hadn't logged multiple hits since May 11 in Cleveland, but he has four homers and eight RBI over his last 12 contests. He's slashing .255/.397/.580 with 40 RBI, 40 runs scored and four steals over 52 contests this season.
May 19 2025Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in a 9-3 win against Colorado on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 300th regular-season home run of Schwarber's career wasn't a cheapie -- he pounded a 466-foot rocket to right field in the ninth inning. The slugger became the 11th active player with 300 or more home runs and pushed his season total to 16, second-most in the majors. Schwarber's career high for long balls in a campaign is 47 (set in 2023), and he's on pace to challenge that mark so far this year.
May 11 2025Schwarber went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was the Phillies' offense in this contest, going deep with a solo shot in the second inning and a two-run blast in the eighth. The notorious slow starter has skipped right to midseason form in 2025, slashing .269/.404/.593 over 40 contests to begin the year. He's been even better in May, batting .333 (13-for-39) with five homers and nine RBI over 10 games this month. Schwarber also has a share of the major-league lead with 14 homers through Sunday's action, and he's added 32 RBI, 29 runs scored and four stolen bases.
May 6 2025Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, two RBI, a stolen base and a walk in Tuesday's victory against Tampa Bay. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber drilled a solo shot to begin the second inning for his 12th home run of the year to tie the MLB lead. He walked and stole second base in the third inning before knocking an RBI single and scoring another run in the eighth. It was his second multi-hit performance over his last 16 games and his first three-hit outing since April 8. Schwarber's OPS jumped to .999 with 16 extra-base hits, three stolen bases and 28 RBI through 156 plate appearances.
Apr 30 2025Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has now homered in back-to-back contests, racking up five RBI during this span. The star slugger has also recorded an extra-base hit in three of his past four outings. Despite not having a multi-hit game in his last 11 contests, Schwarber extended his on-base streak to 30 games to open the season.
Apr 18 2025Schwarber went 1-for-3 with one walk and a solo homer in Friday's 7-2 win over Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber extended the Phillies' lead to seven runs in the fifth inning, when he took Anthony Veneziano deep to right-center field for a 426-foot solo homer. It was Schwarber's seventh long shot of the season and fourth since the beginning of April. He's slashing .286/.438/.629 with 17 walks, one stolen base, 17 runs and 15 RBI across 89 plate appearances to start the season.
Apr 16 2025Schwarber will start in left field and bat third in Wednesday's game versus the Giants, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's the first start in the outfield this season for Schwarber, who made five starts in left field last year. Schwarber's fantasy managers would love for the slugger to gain outfield eligibility, but there's no guarantee it will happen during the 2025 season.
Apr 10 2025Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 4-2 extra-inning loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber delivered a 449-foot moonshot in the third inning, tagging right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach for the righty's first run allowed on the season. The veteran slugger is tearing the cover off the ball to begin the season, batting .283 with six long balls and 12 RBI to go with 12 runs scored and eight walks over 56 plate appearances.
Apr 8 2025Schwarber went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and drove in two additional runs in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was able to log a rare triple Tuesday -- his first since 2023 and 13th of his major-league career -- which drove in two runs in the third, and on his next at-bat he took Chris Sale deep for a 462-foot moonshot to center field. Schwarber has started the season slashing .324/.444/.811 with six walks, five home runs and 11 RBI across 45 plate appearances.
Apr 4 2025Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber extended the Phillies' lead to 2-0 in the seventh inning with a 444-foot moonshot off left-hander Luis Peralta, his fourth homer already this year. Schwarber has hit safely in six straight games to start the season, going 8-for-26 (.308) with eight RBI, seven runs scored and a 1.165 OPS.
Mar 29 2025Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer in a 11-6 win over Washington on Saturday. He also had two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's 6th inning blast helped put the game out of reach and gave the Phillies a 7-2 lead to help solidify the win. With Edmundo Sosa and Brandon Marsh aboard, Schwarber deposited a Lucas Sims' sweeper into the stands for his second home run in as many games for the Phils. The 32-year-old launched 38 homers in 2024 and is on his way to matching that to begin 2025.
Mar 27 2025Schwarber 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs scored and one walk in Thursday's 7-3 extra-inning win over Washington. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Batting out of the No. 4 spot in Philadelphia's lineup, Schwarber played the part of a prototypical cleanup hitter with a go-ahead solo homer in the seventh inning. The star slugger has recorded at least 100 runs scored in each of his past three seasons primarily as a leadoff hitter, but even though Schwarber could have a harder time scoring runs if his move to the middle of the order sticks, he should see plenty of RBI opportunities in a loaded Phillies lineup.
Feb 17 2025Phillies manager Rob Thomson is considering batting Schwarber third or fourth this season, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has batted leadoff in 85 percent of his plate appearances with the Phillies, but Thompson is mulling a change atop his batting order. If Thomson does opt to mix things up, he's expected to hit Trea Turner leadoff and Bryce Harper second, with Schwarber and Alec Bohm occupying the next two spots in some order. The potential change would ding Schwarber's runs projection a bit but boost his RBI potential. He's reached the century mark in both categories in each of the last two regular seasons.
Sep 22 2024Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He kicked off the afternoon by taking Sean Manaea deep, giving Schwarber his 36th homer of the season and his 15th leadoff homer -- extending the major-league record he set Sept. 10. The veteran slugger is one RBI shy of his second straight 100-RBI campaign, and with seven games left on the Phillies' schedule, he still has an outside shot at his third straight 40-homer season.
Sep 13 2024Schwarber (elbow) will DH and bat leadoff Friday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to elbow pain stemming from an awkward dive back to first base on a pickoff Tuesday. All indications are that the injury is minor, and he's feeling well enough to play Friday. The 31-year-old has 35 home runs and a .868 OPS on the year.
Sep 11 2024The Phillies scratched Schwarber from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays while he continues to experience soreness in his left elbow, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was removed in the fourth inning of Tuesday's 9-4 win, after he looked to have injured his elbow while diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt the inning prior. Though the Phillies initially penciled Schwarber into the lineup Wednesday, manager Rob Thomson said that the designated hitter is still experiencing soreness in his elbow when he swings. The Phillies have Thursday off, so the club is seemingly hopeful that Schwarber will be ready to serve as the DH in Friday's series opener versus the Mets after two full days of rest.
Sep 10 2024Schwarber was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rays due to left elbow discomfort, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber appeared to injure his elbow while diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt in the third inning, and he was later pinch hit for in the fourth. The severity of his injury remains unknown, and he should be considered day-to-day for the time being.
Sep 9 2024Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Monday's 2-1 win over the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber got the Phillies first hit of the game Monday when he took Tyler Alexander deep in the sixth inning. Schwarber stayed hot at the dish as he extended his hitting streak to eight games, which ties a season-long streak. He's now hit six home runs over his last seven games with 12 RBI in that span. Schwarber's 34 home runs are the third most in the national league behind Shohei Ohtani and Marcell Ozuna.
Sep 7 2024Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, three RBI and a walk in Friday's win over Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber reached on an error and scored in the first inning. He then knocked an RBI single and scored again in the second before capping off his day with a two-run blast in the sixth. It was Schwarber's fifth home run in his last four games following a 17-game drought. He's up to 33 long balls and 92 RBI with an .857 OPS through 130 games.
Sep 4 2024Schwarber went 5-for-6 with a double, three home runs, four runs scored and six RBI in Tuesday's 10-9 win over the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 31-year-old slugger became only the second Phillie in history to record a five-hit, three-homer performance, joining Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt in a very exclusive club. Schwarber led off the game with a solo shot off Chris Bassitt and then added another off the veteran righty in the fourth, but it was his three-run blast in the top of the ninth off Chad Green that completed an improbable comeback from an early 6-1 deficit. Schwarber is up to 31 homers, 88 RBI and 92 runs on the season to go with an .843 OPS, his highest mark in the latter category since 2021.
Aug 26 2024Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's RBI double in the third inning brought in the first run of the game. He came around to score on an Alec Bohm single and later drove in another pair of runs. Schwarber had gone 13 straight games without multiple hits but has now done so in back-to-back games. He's produced an .868 OPS with 12 extra-base hits this month. Schwarber owns an .845 OPS with 45 extra-base knocks and 82 RBI through 119 games this season.
Aug 14 2024Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a grand slam in a 9-5 win against the Marlins on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber struck out in three of his five plate appearances, but he also had the biggest hit in the game, crushing a grand slam in the fourth inning that turned a three-run Phillies deficit into a one-run lead. The long ball was his first in six games since Schwarber slugged three homers against the Dodgers on Aug. 7, and it also snapped a four-game hitless stretch during which he went 0-for-14. Of Schwarber's last 13 hits, nine (six home runs and three doubles) have gone for extra bases.
Aug 8 2024Schwarber went 4-for-4 with three home runs, one double, one walk, seven RBI and three runs in Wednesday's 9-4 win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Gavin Stone deep for a leadoff shot to open the contest before adding a two-run double in the fifth to bring the Phillies back within one run. But the slugger wasn't done yet, launching two more home runs in his final two at-bats to put the finishing touches on Philadelphia's win. Schwarber has five home runs through six games in August, already matching his total for July. He's also hit safely in seven straight contests, tallying three multi-hit performances over that stretch.
Aug 7 2024Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a solo homer, two RBI and a steal in Tuesday's win over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber singled home the game's first run in the fifth and then followed that up with a solo home run in the ninth to pad the Phillies' lead. He now has a homer in two of his last three games and has notched at least a base hit in six straight. In nine starts since July 27, Schwarber is slashing .378/.531/.865 with five homers, nine RBI and 10 runs scored. He's currently on pace to set career-best marks in hits, runs and on-base percentage. For the year, Schwarber is slashing .253/.384/.473 with 24 homers, 66 RBI, 76 runs, five steals and an 81:131 BB:K in 474 plate appearances.
Aug 5 2024Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and a double in Sunday's win over the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Logan Gilbert deep to right on just the third pitch of the game to give the Phillies a quick lead they would never relinquish. Schwarber later chipped in a double in the third and a base knock in the ninth for his fifth three-hit game of the year. He's been seeing the ball exceptionally well as of late, slashing .371/.551/.800 with four homers, nine RBI, eight runs and a 13:13 BB:K over his last 10 games. Overall, Schwarber is hitting .251/.383/.467 with 23 homers, 64 RBI, 74 runs, four steals and an 80:127 BB:K in 465 plate appearances.
Jul 28 2024Schwarber went 2-for-4 with two home runs, a walk and three total RBI in Sunday's loss to the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Guardians rookie starter Joey Cantillo deep two times - a leadoff home run in the opening frame followed by a two-run shot in the third inning. The 31-year-old drove in all three Phillies runs Sunday, recording three RBI for the second-straight game. After coming out of the All-Star break slow, Schwarber is now riding a four game hitting streak during which he has racked up five extra-base hits, four walks and 8 RBI.
Jul 9 2024The Phillies reinstated Schwarber (groin) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just as manager Rob Thomson suggested over the weekend would be the case, Schwarber will return to the 26-man active roster ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Dodgers. He'll likely slot back in atop the Philadelphia lineup as the team's designated hitter Tuesday against Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller.
Jul 7 2024Phillies manager Rob Thomson confirmed Sunday that Schwarber (groin) will be activated from the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday's series opener versus the Dodgers, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After running on the field at approximately 90 percent intensity Saturday, Schwarber cleared the final hurdle in his recovery from a left groin strain by sprinting at full speed during a pregame workout Sunday. The Phillies apparently feel comfortable enough with Schwarber's health to let him return from the IL without heading out on a rehab assignment beforehand. Schwarber has made just three of his 78 starts in left field this season, and the Phillies will most likely deploy him strictly as a designated hitter during the upcoming week to lessen the possibility of a setback with the groin heading into the All-Star break. The 31-year-old's upcoming return will presumably result in fewer opportunities for David Dahl.
Jul 5 2024Schwarber (groin) is expected to be activated off the injured list ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Dodgers, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has been working through drills at 90 percent intensity, per Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia, and the 31-year-old slugger will run the bases Saturday in the last step in his rehab program before he rejoins the team. Schwarber is slashing .250/.373/447 with 17 home runs, 49 RBI and a .820 OPS over 367 plate appearances this season.
Jul 4 2024Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Thursday that Schwarber (groin) is going through drills at 90 percent intensity, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Meanwhile, Thomson pegged Bryce Harper (hamstring) and J.T. Realmuto (knee) at 70-to-75 percent as they go through drills. While it's possible all three players make it back prior to the All-Star break, Schwarber would appear to have the best shot to do so. He's coming back from a left groin strain.
Jun 28 2024Schwarber was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a mild left groin strain, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was lifted from Thursday's game due to groin tightness, but further evaluation revealed he's battling a strain. While the DH will be shelved for at least 10 days, there's optimism Schwarber will be able to return when first eligible. With Bryce Harper (hamstring) also on the IL, Nick Castellanos and David Dahl could see more DH work.
Jun 27 2024Schwarber was removed from Thursday's game against the Marlins due to left groin tightness, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was removed in the ninth inning and replaced by Brandon Marsh. The extent of the injury will not be known until Friday.
Jun 19 2024Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-3 win over San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber cut the Phillies' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, launching a solo shot off Wandy Peralta. It's Schwarber's 17th homer this season and his third in his last two games. He's boosted his slash line to .257/.377/.468 with 48 RBI, 53 runs scored and four steals across 329 plate appearances this season.
Jun 17 2024Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a pair of two-run homers and two walks in Monday's 9-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran slugger got the scoring started for the Phillies in the third inning with a two-run blast off Randy Vasquez and later added another two-run homer off Adrian Morejon in the sixth. It was Schwarber's second multi-HR game this season and the 28th of his career. Schwarber batted .179 in his first seven games of June, but he's found his power stroke of late with five homers over his last seven contests. He's boosted his slash line to a season-best .253/.373/.457, and his 16 home runs are tied for fourth most in the National League.
Jun 13 2024Schwarber went 3-for-4 with three RBI in a 9-3 loss to the Red Sox on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber singled in the first inning then got the Phillies on the board with a three-run double in the fourth. He later added another single in the seventh and walked in the ninth. Schwarber is riding a six-game hit streak that includes three multi-hit games, two home runs and five RBI. Schwarber's current .249 average would be his best in a Phillies uniform, and he now has 13 home runs, 41 RBI and 48 runs scored in 305 plate appearances.
Jun 12 2024Schwarber went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran slugger led off the game with a deep blast to right field off Kutter Crawford, then did it again to lead off the fifth. Schwarber's June exploits have become legendary -- per Paul Casella of MLB.com, he's averaging one homer every 10.4 at-bats in his career during the month, the best pace in MLB history ahead of Babe Ruth's 10.6. Schwarber's current groove extends back to late May, and over his last 12 games he's slashing .277/.382/.532 with four long balls and seven RBI.
May 30 2024Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, an additional RBI, a walk and a stolen base in Wednesday's 6-1 victory over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He got the Phillies started with an opposite-field homer off Kyle Harrison to lead off the first inning. Schwarber drove in a second run with a base hit in the eighth, extending Philadelphia's lead to 5-0. It's the third straight two-hit game for Schwarber -- he's gone 6-for-12 with two homers, four RBI and two steals in that span. He's boosted his slash line to .246/.369/.425 with 11 homers, 35 RBI and 43 runs scored across 55 games while going 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts this season.
May 27 2024Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and a stolen base in Monday's loss to San Francisco. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber put the Phillies on the board in the third inning with a two-run shot off reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell. It was his fourth homer against a lefty this season, and he's now batting a lofty .333 (27-for-71) against southpaw hurlers. Overall, Schwarber's .359 OBP this season is on pace for the second-highest mark of his career.
May 25 2024Schwarber went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, one RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-4 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has multiple hits in three of his last five contests, though his double Saturday was his first extra-base hit since May 16. The 31-year-old slugger is up to a .234/.356/.396 slash line with nine home runs, 31 RBI, 40 runs scored and two stolen bases over 235 plate appearances this season. Schwarber's drop in power this season isn't a great sign after exceeding 45 homers in back-to-back years, but he continues to both walk (16.2 percent) and strike out (29.8 percent) at high rates.
May 14 2024Schwarber (back) will start at designated hitter and bat leadoff in Tuesday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber missed three straight starts with back soreness, but he was able to pinch hit in Monday's contest and is back among the starting nine Tuesday. The 31-year-old is slashing .216/.319/.399 with nine home runs over 40 contests for the Phillies this season.
May 13 2024Schwarber (back) will be in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was absent from Monday's starting lineup due to back soreness, but he was called upon later in the game to pinch it, which resulted in a strikeout. After Monday's win, manager Rob Thomson noted that the slugger would be back in the starting nine for the second game of the series.
May 11 2024Schwarber (back) is hoping to return to the lineup Monday and/or Tuesday versus the Mets, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber exited Friday's game and missed Saturday's contest with a sore back. It sounds like he'll sit out Sunday, as well, but seems to be trending in the right direction. The Phillies are planning to give Bryce Harper at day at designated hitter Sunday.

Realmuto and Whit Merrifield in the second inning. He even swiped second base after the two-RBI single, marking his second pilfer of the campaign. The slugger lifted his average to .217 on the day and now has six homers and 11 RBI on the season.
Apr 17 2024Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a solo home run during Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber notched his first multi-HR game of the season -- a feat he accomplished thrice in the 2023 regular season -- with the solo homer coming off Ryan Feltner in the first inning and the two-run shot coming at the expense of Peter Lambert in the sixth. The outing came off the back of three straight games without a hit (0-for-11), pushing Schwarber out of the mini-slump.
Apr 14 2024Schwarber went 3-for-3 with two walks, a solo home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Incredibly, all five of his plate appearances came against southpaws, marking the first time in his career that Schwarber had reached base five times in the same game against same-handed pitching. Per Paul Casella of MLB.com, he's only the third left-handed batter in the last eight years to accomplish that platoon-defying feat, joining Juan Soto and Anthony Rizzo. Schwarber has had a solid start to the season, slashing .259/.358/.414 through 15 games with three homers, a steal, six RBI and 11 runs.
Apr 5 2024Schwarber went 1-for-3 with two walks and two RBI in Friday's win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber tallied the Phillies second and third runs of the game when he smoked a 103.0-mph single off lefty starter Patrick Corbin. Apr 4 2024Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty slugger took Frankie Montas deep to lead off the sixth inning, but it was all the offense the Phillies could muster in a game delayed by nearly seven hours due to rain. Schwarber has a five-game hitting streak going, and he's begun the campaign batting .280 (7-for-25) with two homers, three RBI, six runs scored and a stolen base.
Mar 31 2024Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a home run and two total runs in Sunday's win over Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber occupied his typical leadoff spot Sunday and opened the Phillies offense's afternoon with a 382-foot home run on Chris Sale's second pitch. The homer was an encouraging development for Schwarber after he batted only .188 against left-handed pitching last year. He and the Phillies lineup have a much easier week coming up with series against the Reds and Nationals.
Mar 14 2024Schwarber (groin) will serve as the Phillies' designated hitter and leadoff batter in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just as manager Rob Thomson suggested would be the case, Schwarber will return to the lineup one day after being scratched from the starting nine due to right groin tightness. Schwarber has now made six starts as a designated hitter and four in left field through 10 Grapefruit League games, but he's expected to see an even larger share of his playing time in the non-defensive role during the regular season.
Mar 13 2024Phillies manager Rob Thomson said he expects Schwarber (groin) to return to the Grapefruit League lineup Thursday versus the Red Sox, Jayson Stark of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was a precautionary late scratch from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers after feeling something in his right groin in the weight room, but he's expected to be fine. The designated hitter has had a rough spring so far, going 2-for-24 with 11 strikeouts.
Oct 17 2023Schwarber went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs, a walk and an additional run scored in Sunday's 10-0 win over the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of the NLCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber officially has a streak going, hitting home runs in back-to-back games. Tuesday's deep shots came off Merrill Kelly in the third and sixth innings as Schwarber took advantage of a few poorly located pitches down the plate. Power is nothing new to the left-hander, who finished second in home runs in the regular season with 47 in 160 games. Schwarber is now slashing .219/.286/.563 this postseason with five runs, four RBI and three home runs in 32 at-bats.
Sep 28 2023Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber got the scoring going early with his long ball in the first inning, but it ultimately would not spark any momentum for the team. As of the end of Thursday's game, the left-handed slugger was tied with Pete Alonso for second-best in home runs with 46 on the season. This year, he has put together a .197/.344/.473 line in 157 games while eclipsing the century mark in both runs and RBI, with 107 and 101, respectively.
Sep 27 2023Schwarber is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber will head to the bench for the first time since Aug. 9 after the Phillies punched their ticket to the playoffs with Tuesday's victory. The veteran slugger has clubbed 45 homers but is still hitting just .196 this season, though he slashed .230/.395/.566 during the run of 42 consecutive starts.
Sep 17 2023Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in a 6-1 win against the Cardinals on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's lone hit of the contest was a three-run blast to right field in the fifth inning that accounted for half of Philadelphia's scoring output. The slugger has gone deep seven times through 15 games in September, posting a .273/.437/.655 slash line, 17 runs and 12 RBI during that stretch. With 44 long balls on the campaign, Schwarber is tied for third in the majors and is just two shy of the career-best mark he established last season. His blast Saturday gave him 97 RBI, setting a new career high.
Sep 10 2023Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk and a three-run home run in Saturday's 8-4 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The slugger capped a five-run second inning for the Phillies by crushing a Johnny Cueto fastball deep to center field. Schwarber has 42 homers on the season, four back of the career high he set in 2022, and he's also one RBI short of matching the career-best 94 he tallied last year. He's been absolutely locked in over the last few weeks -- in his last 20 games, he's slashing .296/.474/.845 with 12 home runs, 19 RBI and 22 runs.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber got the Phillies started in the first inning with a 465-foot blast off Michael Wacha, his 41st homer of the year. It's Schwarber's 11th long ball in his last 18 games -- he's batting .302 (19-for-63) with a 1.361 OPS in that span. While he's still batting just .195 on the campaign, Schwarber's OPS is up to .820 through 623 plate appearances with 92 runs scored and 90 RBI.
Sep 5 2023Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, three total runs and three walks in Monday's 9-7 victory versus San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber reached base five times in the contest, the second time he's accomplished that this season. He accounted for the Phillies' final run with his solo shot to right field in the fifth inning. The long ball was Schwarber's 40th of the campaign, the fourth-highest figure in the majors. This is the second straight season that the slugger has reached the 40-homer mark -- he swatted a career-high 46 home runs last year.
Aug 25 2023Schwarber went 2-for-4 with one double, a home run, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's victory over St. Louis. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's double in the second inning gave the Phillies the lead while his homer in the seventh provided the Phils with a four-run cushion. Schwarber has now hit safely in six of his last seven, reaching base 16 times (eight hits and eight walks) in 34 plate appearances with five home runs, nine RBI and nine runs scored over that timeframe. On the year, while Schwarber is on pace for 40-plus homers, 100-plus RBI and 100-plus runs scored, he's also still hitting just .187 with 165 strikeouts in 465 at-bats.
Aug 23 2023Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, two walks and an additional run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber got the Phillies on the board in the sixth inning with a home run off Alex Cobb, his 34th of the season. The 30-year-old Schwarber has four long balls in his last six games, going 6-for-21 (.286) in that span. He's still batting just .184 on the season, though his OPS is now up to .772 with 81 RBI and 79 runs scored through 567 plate appearances.
Aug 19 2023Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a walk, two home runs and three RBI in Friday's 8-7 loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took Joan Adon deep in the fourth inning for a two-run blast before giving the Phillies a spark of hope in the ninth with a solo shot off Kyle Finnegan, but his teammates couldn't complete the comeback. Schwarber is sticking to his usual Three True Outcomes formula in August, slashing .185/.348/.463 through 15 games with five homers, 11 runs and 12 RBI.
Aug 12 2023Schwarber (foot) is starting in left field and batting in the leadoff spot Saturday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was taken out of the Phillies' game Friday after fouling a ball off his left foot, but it won't force him to miss any time. The 30-year-old slugger hasn't been able to collect hits very efficiently this season, but he has gone 7-for-16 with three homers across his last five games.
Aug 11 2023Schwarber is dealing with a left foot contusion and will be re-evaluated Saturday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was lifted from Friday's blowout win over the Twins after fouling a ball off his foot. All indications are that it was a precautionary removal, but Schwarber is sore and will be looked at again Saturday before the Phillies decide whether he can play.
Aug 9 2023Schwarber is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has appeared in each of the Phillies' 114 games this season, but he'll grab a breather Wednesday as Weston Wilson covers left field and Trea Turner takes a turn as the designated hitter. Edmundo Sosa is starting at shortstop.
Aug 7 2023Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and an additional run scored in Sunday's win over Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber put the Phillies ahead 5-4 in the second inning with a two-run, 421-foot blast off Zack Greinke. It's Schwarber's first homer and first multi-hit game since July 28. He'd gone just 1-for-27 while striking out at a 30.8 percent rate since then. The 30-year-old Schwarber is up to 28 homers on the year, though he's slashing just .182/.321/.421 with 67 RBI and 65 runs scored across 501 plate appearances.
Jul 16 2023Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Sunday's victory over San Diego. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber ended the Phillies' four-game series against the Padres with another impactful performance, taking Seth Lugo yard for a solo shot in the sixth inning for his third straight game with a homer and plating the game-winning run in the 12th inning on a sacrifice fly. After going 5-for-18 (277) with three long balls in the series, Schwarber is slashing .189/.314/.444 on the year with the sixth most homers in baseball (25).
Jun 29 2023Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber started the game with a homer on the first pitch he saw from Kyle Hendricks. He has a home run and two doubles over his last three games, though he had a brief 0-for-15 slump over the four contests prior. The slugger is up to 21 homers, 43 RBI, 47 runs scored and a .186/.326/.441 slash line through 80 games. Eight of his homers have come in June.
Jun 18 2023Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber opened the scoring with a solo shot on the fourth pitch from Hogan Harris. In the fifth, Schwarber added an RBI single. The outfielder collected his first three-hit game of the season, and he's now batting .254 (17-for-67) with seven homers and 14 RBI in June. For the season, he's at a .187/.332/.455 slash line with 20 long balls, 41 RBI, 43 runs scored and no stolen bases through 72 contests. It's a recurring theme for Schwarber to get hot in the middle of the campaign, and it looks like 2023 is no different.
Jun 14 2023Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a solo blast and two runs scored in Tuesday's 15-3 win over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber kicked things off with a 450-foot mammoth home run to right in what would end up being a four-run opening frame for the Phillies. Since June 2, he's slashing .256/.385/.674 with five homers, nine RBI, 12 runs and a 9:11 BB:K to go with a 1.059 OPS over 52 plate appearances. He's starting to turn things around after a miserable start over the first two months and should continue to see leadoff opportunities so long as he's producing.
Jun 10 2023Schwarber went 2-for-3 with two walks, a triple, a solo home run and three runs scored in Friday's 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit his fourth home run over his past five games and accounted for four of the Phillies' five runs Friday. During his current hot streak, the lefty slugger is slashing .313/.522/1.188 with eight RBI and eight runs scored. Heading into June, Schwarber was slashing just .163/.318/.395 with 18 of his 31 hits going for extra bases, so despite the recent offensive outburst, he still has a lot of work to do to turn around his overall numbers.
Jun 6 2023Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run off left-hander Tyler Alexander. It would stand as the only run scored in the Phillies' 1-0 win. Schwarber now has three homers in his last three games. He's gone 5-for-20 (.300) over his last five contests after going just 2-for-30 in his previous nine. The 30-year-old Schwarber is now slashing .173/.322/.425 with 16 homers, 33 runs scored and 34 RBI through 261 plate appearances this season.
Jun 4 2023Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a walk and two three-run home runs during Sunday's 11-3 victory over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was 2-for-30 over a nine-game stretch before manager Rob Thompson moved him back into the leadoff spot Friday. Since then, the slugger has gone 5-for-15 with three-extra base knocks. Sunday's performance was Schwarber's first multi-homer game of the year and marked his first long ball since May 22. Given the positive results, he figures to remain in the leadoff spot moving forward, and evident by his six RBI versus Washington, that doesn't always mean fewer opportunities with runners on base.
Jun 2 2023Schwarber is batting leadoff for the Phillies on Friday versus the Nationals, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Rob Thomson is shaking things up in an effort to jump-start a disappointing offense. It's interesting that shifting Schwarber up in the batting order is the move, considering he's gone 2-for-30 over his last nine games to drop his OPS on the season below .700, but he does have a .348 OBP against right-handed pitchers -- and Washington is sending Josiah Gray to the mound.
May 21 2023Schwarber went 1-for-2 with a grand slam, two walks and an additional run scored in Saturday's 12-3 victory over the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Jameson Taillon deep with the bases loaded in the first inning and proceeded to walk in his next two at-bats before striking out in his final appearance. Fifteen of the slugger's 28 hits this season have been for extra bases, including 11 home runs, and he's slashing just .176/.314/.409. Schwarber's batting average has never been indicative of his overall impact, but his OBP and SLG are both the lowest they've been since his final year with Chicago.
May 16 2023Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Giants closer Camilo Doval deep in the ninth inning, but the Phillies couldn't find the tying run. This was Schwarber's third homer in his last eight games, though he's gone just 5-for-26 (.192) in that span. He's up to 10 long balls,19 RBI, 23 runs scored and four doubles while slashing .179/.307/.404 on the season.

The hard-hitting outfielder has hit two homers over his last four games, and he's up to nine long balls on the year. He's slashing .188/.304/.413 with 18 RBI, 20 runs scored, four doubles and no stolen bases through 38 contests.
May 10 2023Schwarber (foot) will hit fifth and start in left field Wednesday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was removed from Tuesday's 8-4 win after fouling a ball off his left foot in the bottom of the sixth inning, but he was fortunate to escape with nothing other than a bone bruise. The Phillies believe the slugger will be able to play Wednesday, but he's scheduled to go through some pregame running before the team makes a final call on his availability, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. As a result, those planning on using Schwarber in DFS contests or in season-long leagues with daily moves will want to check back closer to the 4:05 p.m. ET opening pitch to ensure that he hasn't been scratched from the lineup.
May 9 2023Schwarber left Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays with a left foot contusion, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. X-rays returned negative. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber went 0-for-2 with a walk before leaving. The outfielder was replaced by Dalton Guthrie in left field after he was unable to continue. He should be considered day-to-day with a chance to return in the coming days depending on swelling and the level of pain.
May 7 2023Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's 6-1 victory over the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber extended the Phillies' lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning with an RBI single. He'd pick up another two RBI with a home run in the sixth, a 434-foot shot off the left-handed Richard Bleier. Schwarber had been mired in an extended slump before Sunday's outburst. The two-hit game snapped an 0-for-19 stretch. Schwarber is now slashing .188/.307/.406 with eight home runs, 16 RBI and 19 runs scored through 150 plate appearances.
May 2 2023Schwarber is batting leadoff Tuesday night against the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is Schwarber's first appearance at leadoff this year and it comes in the same game that Bryce Harper (elbow) will make his season debut. Schwarber slugged his seventh homer of the year and also drew a walk in Monday's series opener at Dodger Stadium. Bryson Stott is batting fifth Tuesday with lefty Julio Urias on the mound for Los Angeles.
Apr 29 2023Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber pulled a 407-foot shot to right field in the first inning, giving the Phillies a 1-0 lead. The former Cub is continuing his "all or nothing" hitting style from last season, when he hit for a .218 batting average with 46 home runs. The 30-year-old is hitting .214 with six homers this year, and is on pace to finish with approximately 36 long balls barring any major injuries or slumps.
Apr 28 2023Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a homer in Friday's win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just like game six of the 2022 World Series, Schwarber took Framber Valdez deep to open the scoring for the Phillies. Coming off a career-high 46 homer season, Schwarber is on pace to hit over 30 long balls for the third straight season.
Apr 5 2023Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He got the Phillies on the board with a solo shot in the first inning off Domingo German before adding an RBI single in the fifth. Schwarber's blast was his first of the season, and after going 1-for-17 through his first four games with a 0:7 BB:K, the 30-year-old slugger might be finding his rhythm at the plate.
Feb 19 2023Schwarber is expected to hit second for the Phillies this season, with offseason acquisition Trea Turner leading off, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber led off 123 times last season. He doesn't have the traditional speed for a leadoff man, and the role may have turned a few too many of his career-high 46 homers into solo shots, but his typically excellent walk rates make him a decent fit nonetheless. Turner owns a .355 career on-base percentage and also has far more speed, however, making him the obvious choice for manager Rob Thomson. Expect slightly fewer plate appearances for Schwarber this season as a result, but his overall value shouldn't change much with the move, as he'll get back in the RBI category whatever he loses in runs.
Nov 5 2022Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk during Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Astros in Game 6 of the World Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber blasted his third homer of the World Series and his sixth of the postseason, a 395-foot shot off Framber Valdez in the sixth inning. This home run marked a new career high for Schwarber in the playoffs despite losing the series to the Astros. The 29-year-old put the finishing touches on an impressive postseason, hitting .218 with a .392 OBP (15 walks) -- Schwarber walked for the eighth straight game Saturday night.
Nov 3 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk during Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Astros in Game 5 of the World Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber ignited the Philadelphia crowd with a game-tying homer off Justin Verlander to lead off the bottom of the first, but he was unable to record a hit for the rest of the night. This marked the 29-year-old's fifth postseason homer in 2022, matching the career high he set during his rookie campaign in 2015 while playing for the Cubs. Schwarber's plate discipline has been outstanding all year -- after setting a career high for walks in the regular season (86), he has recorded a remarkable 14 walks in the postseason spanning 64 plate appearances. Schwarber was 1-for-2 with a walk in Game 2 against projected Game 5 starter Framber Valdez.
Nov 1 2022Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk during Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Astros in Game 3 of the World Series. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber made the score 6-0 with a two-run blast off Lance McCullers in the fifth inning Tuesday night, the fourth homer of five for the Phillies during Game 3. The 29-year-old continued his solid postseason, hitting his fourth homer and recording his 12th walk. By reaching base two more times in his four plate appearances, Schwarber's postseason OBP has climbed to a stellar .400. Getting on base is important for the leadoff man in any lineup, and Schwarber's success at reaching base is one of the many reasons why the Phillies are just two wins away from winning the World Series. He will look to keep the positive momentum going against projected starter Christian Javier in Game 4.
Oct 23 2022Schwarber went 0-for-1 with a stolen base, three walks and a run scored during Sunday's 4-3 win over the Padres in Game 5 of the NLCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was able to record his 12th steal of the season in the third inning off Yu Darvish, and he would go on to score after a Rhys Hoskins homer to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The 29-year-old did an amazing job as the leadoff man Sunday, drawing three walks in a single game for the fourth time this season. Schwarber came into Game 5 with a .529 OBP in the NLCS, and his three-walk performance raised his OBP to a stellar .571. He has set the tone on offense as the leadoff man in the Philadelphia lineup and will look to do the same in the World Series.
Oct 22 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, two additional runs scored and a walk during Saturday's 10-6 win over the Padres in Game 4 of the NLCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber continued to be an OBP machine during the NLCS, reaching base three more times including a 429-foot blast off Luis Garcia in the sixth inning. The 29-year-old has an astonishing .529 OBP in the NLCS with one RBI in all four games. After entering the NLCS just 1-for-20 in the postseason, Schwarber has completely turned it around, and he is making an impact nightly for the Phillies, who are one win away from reaching the World Series. Schwarber is 4-for-11 with two homers in his career against projected Game 5 starter Yu Darvish.
Oct 21 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Friday's Game 3 of the NLCS in the 4-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit his second homer of the NLCS, a 405-foot blast off Joe Musgrove to begin the bottom of the first inning, setting the tone for the Phillies in the crucial win. The 28-year-old has knocked in a run in all three games of the NLCS, and he is now one shy of 100 RBI for the season. Coming into the off-season as one of the top targets in free agency, Schwarber is delivering on his four-year, $79 million contract. The big-swinging lefty has a .500 OBP and two homers over 12 plate appearances in the NLCS, proving to be a hard out for Padres pitchers.
Oct 19 2022Schwarber went 0-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base and a walk during Game 2's 8-5 loss to the Padres on Wednesday afternoon. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber recorded his 11th stolen base of the season, but he was unable to match his Game 1 performance that included a single and a solo home run. The 29-year-old outfielder is now 11-for-12 on steal attempts in 2022, but he will look to get back in the hit column as the Phillies return home for Game 3 of the NLCS on Friday night.
Oct 18 2022Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk during Tuesday's 2-0 win over the Padres in Game 1 of the NLCS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit a Yu Darvish cutter 488 feet into the second deck of Petco Park to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the six inning. The 29-year-old lefty ended the regular season with four homers in the final four games and looked primed for the postseason, but he was only 1-for-20 prior to Game 1 of the NLCS. Schwarber broke out of his postseason slump in a big way, accounting for two of the Phillies' three hits on the night and reaching base his first three at bats.
Oct 4 2022Schwarber isn't starting Tuesday's game against the Astros, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following an 8-for-13 stretch over the last four games (including four homers) to help the Phillies secure a postseason berth, Schwarber will get a day off Tuesday along with most of the regulars. While he rests, Matt Vierling will start in left field and bat seventh.
Oct 3 2022Schwarber went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs in Monday's 3-0 win over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Philadelphia slugger crushed Houston's pitching staff with two long balls which accounted for two of Philadelphia's three runs on the night. Schwarber now has an NL best 46 home runs this season and has reached 94 RBI and 100 runs scored, all career highs. He is slashing .219/.324/.506 in 154 games this season.
Oct 2 2022Schwarber went 2-for-3 with three RBI in Sunday's 8-1 win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber cleared the bases with a three-run single in the fifth inning. He has three multi-RBI performances over his last 11 games but he didn't drive in a run in any of the other eight contests. The lefty slugger owns an .815 OPS with 92 RBI and 68 extra-base hits this season.
Oct 1 2022Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base and one run scored in a 13-4 loss to the Nationals in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber wasted no time in getting the Phillies on the board, ripping a leadoff triple to left off Anibal Sanchez on the very first pitch of the game. The outfielder then stole home after J.T. Realmuto went down on strikes three batters later for his 10th steal of the season. Schwarber has gone 4-for-20 with two steals, two home runs, two RBI and six runs scored across his last six games.
Sep 29 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was hit by a pitch in his second at-bat and came around to score the Phillies' first run later that inning after stealing second base. He then tried to spark a comeback for Philadelphia in the seventh with a leadoff double before coming around to score the team's second and final run of the game on a Bryce Harper groundout. Schwarber is hitting just .207 in September with six homers, nine RBI and 14 runs scored to go along with three steals.
Sep 25 2022Schwarber went 2-for-3 with two solo homers, three runs scored and two walks in Sunday's 8-7 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty slugger belted a leadoff home run followed by another solo blast in the third inning, both coming against start Charlie Morton. Schwarber is now up to 42 homers with 87 RBI and 93 runs scored through 146 games. He'd been stuck in a 1-for-15 slump with eight punchouts since his last long ball Sep. 20. Schwarber improved his season slash line to .214/.314/.487.
Sep 21 2022Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and an additional run in Tuesday's 18-11 loss to the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's eighth-inning blast off reliever Julian Merryweather was his third in five games and his 40th of the season. Though he holds a three-homer edge on Atlanta's Austin Riley for the National League lead in the category, Schwarber's power production has largely gone unnoticed while the Yankees' Aaron Judge owns a 20-homer advantage over Schwarber for the MLB lead. Even so, Schwarber has still paid dividends for those that invested in him in fantasy drafts, as his power output to go along with his 87 runs, 81 RBI and seven stolen bases has mostly offset his lowly .213 batting average over 525 at-bats.
Sep 17 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 7-2 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber launched a solo homer in the fourth inning. It was his 39th homer of the season, which is good for second in baseball. He has homers in back-to-back games and has three this month. The outfielder extended his hitting streak to three games, something he has done three times this month. He is now slashing .214/.311/.486 on the season.
Sep 13 2022Schwarber went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in a 2-1 win in Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber walked and stole his seventh base of the season in the first inning. He's 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts this season after going 12-for-23 in his first seven seasons. Tuesday's game was just the third time in his last 14 games where he did not strike out. With 179 strikeouts through 141 games, he has a good shot at fanning 200 times this year.
Sep 11 2022Schwarber went 2-for-3 with one double and a solo home run in Saturday's win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber increased the Phillies' lead to four with a one-out homer off righty reliever Cory Abbott in the eighth. The outfielder has been a little lackluster in his last 18 games, recording an OPS of .663 in 79 plate appearances. The 29-year-old slugs off right-handed pitching with 28 home runs in 324 at-bats compared to just nine home runs in 175 at-bats against lefties.
Aug 30 2022Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and an additional RBI in Monday's loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber contributed to a booming start for Philadelphia, plating a run with a single in the second inning and slugging a three-run shot to right field in the fourth. The long ball was his 36th of the season, putting him three ahead of Paul Goldschmidt for the National League lead. Schwarber is now two homers shy of the career-high mark of 38 he established with the Cubs in 2019.
Aug 26 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Thursday's win over Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber homered off Justin Dunn with two outs in the third inning to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. This broke a 14-game stretch without a home run for the 29-year-old. He has 27 home runs against righties in 292 at-bats this season and only eight home runs in 150 at-bats against lefties.
Aug 20 2022Schwarber went 2-for-5 with two RBI in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his first start since Aug. 11 after recovering from a calf injury, Schwarber was productive but didn't get much help from the rest of the Phillies' lineup. The 29-year-old slugger had been slashing .298/.377/.574 with four doubles and three home runs in the 12 games prior to getting hurt, and it looks like he might be able to pick right up where he left off now that he's healthy.
Aug 19 2022Schwarber (calf) is starting at designated hitter and batting leadoff Friday versus the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber will return to the lineup after suffering a right calf strain Aug. 11 against the Marlins and missing a week of action. The 29-year-old had gone 7-for-13 with three doubles, two RBI, three runs and a stolen base over his last three games prior to getting hurt.
Aug 16 2022Schwarber (calf) "probably will not return to the lineup until Friday," Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Interim manager Rob Thomson was asked about Schwarber's status Tuesday, and the coach indicated that the Phillies will likely take advantage of a team off day Thursday and hold the slugger out until that has passed. Schwarber will be available to pinch hit if needed, though.
Aug 15 2022Schwarber (calf) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber is still dealing with a sore calf, so he will open on the bench for a fourth straight day. Matt Vierling will garner another start in left field in Schwarber's place.
Aug 14 2022Schwarber (calf) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was able to pinch hit in Saturday's game, but he is still not 100 percent and will open on the bench for a third straight day. As was the case in the last two contests, Matt Vierling will get the start in left field.
Aug 13 2022Schwarber (calf) isn't starting Saturday against the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber sustained a mild right calf strain Thursday against the Marlins, and he'll remain out of the lineup for a second consecutive game. However, he remains day-to-day and could be available to pinch hit Saturday, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Matt Vierling is starting in left field and batting ninth once again.
Aug 12 2022Schwarber (calf) is not in the starting lineup Friday versus the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber is a no-go after he left Thursday's contest with a mild right calf strain. The injury won't likely require a stint on the injured list, but it's possible that he misses a few games while nursing the issue. Matt Vierling will take over in left field Friday and bat ninth against New York.
Aug 11 2022Schwarber exited Thursday's game against the Marlins due to a mild right calf strain, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was replaced by a pinch runner in the fifth inning after drawing a walk, and he's considered day-to-day after receiving his initial diagnosis. Prior his departure, he went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. If he's forced to miss any additional time, Matt Vierling would likely see increased playing time.
Aug 10 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has posted extra-base hits (two doubles and one home run) in three of his last four starts, bringing him up to 49 for the season. Though he's been an excellent source of counting stats this season with five steals, 70 runs and 67 RBI in addition to the power production, he's been a massive drain in the batting-average category with a .207 mark in 401 at-bats. Like he has throughout his career, Schwarber is walking at a high rate (12.6 percent), so the Phillies will likely stick with him as their table setter. He'll man left field and bat leadoff in Wednesday's contest.
Aug 2 2022Schwarber went 0-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in a 13-1 loss Tuesday in Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber never put the ball in play as he walked twice and struck out twice. His third-inning stolen base was his fifth of the season, setting a new career high. After walking just five times in his prior 115 plate appearances, the outfielder showed his patience Tuesday with his first multi-walk game since June 28. Since the All-Star break, he's 7-for-43 with four homers and 14 strikeouts.
Jul 27 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Phillies' leadoff man put his team on the board for the first time on the night in the sixth inning, when he took Spencer Strider deep for his 31st home run of the season. Schwarber maintains a three-homer lead over Atlanta's Austin Riley for the National League lead in the category, but the power production has come with a major drain in batting average (.203 over 355 at-bats on the season). The 29-year-old's .309 on-base percentage is similarly unremarkable for a leadoff hitter, but interim manager Rob Thomson thus far hasn't shown an inclination to move Schwarber down the lineup. Schwarber will start in left field and handle the table-setting role once again in Wednesday's series finale.
Jul 17 2022Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's 10-0 win over the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has met expectations from a power standpoint thus far in July, as his long ball Saturday was his sixth in 14 games this month. However, Schwarber has produced only four other hits in his 56 at-bats in July and has drawn only three walks. The Phillies continue to deploy Schwarber as their leadoff man, but interim manager Rob Thomson could consider adjusting the lineup coming out of the All-Star break in light of Schwarber's struggles to consistently get on base over the past few weeks.
Jul 6 2022Schwarber went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber supplied all the offense for the Phillies in this one, launching a solo home run off Josiah Gray in the fourth frame and another off him in the sixth. He has now gone deep 27 times this season and four times in the last two days. Schwarber has been mashing the ball lately, producing a .288 average with nine homers, 18 RBI, 11 runs and a stolen base over his last 13 contests. He has been a crucial part of keeping the Phillies' offense afloat while Bryce Harper (thumb) has been on the 10-day injured list since June 26.
Jul 1 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer Thursday against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Jesus Cruz yard in the third inning to record his 23rd homer of the season. He hit extremely well across 27 games in June, slugging 12 home runs while also tallying 27 RBI and 27 runs scored. Overall, Schwarber has maintained a 133 wRC+ and .364 wOBA across 328 plate appearances.
Jun 28 2022Schwarber went 1-for-3 with two walks, a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: His seventh-inning blast off Dylan Lee tied the game at 3-3, but it was the last gasp from the Phillies' offense. Schwarber has gone yard six times in the last 12 games to give him 22 homers on the year, and the hot streak has raised his slash line to .220/.344/.511.
Jun 26 2022Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and four RBI in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber accounted for half of the Phillies' run production with an RBI double in the second inning and a go-ahead, three-run blast in the seventh. The long ball was his 10th in June and his 21st of the season, while his four RBI were a season high. The outfielder is slashing .219/.340/.502 with 46 RBI, 51 runs scored, four steals and 12 doubles through 72 contests. With Bryce Harper (thumb) out for the foreseeable future, Schwarber and Nick Castellanos are likely to serve as the designated hitter more often, though both are likely to maintain near-everyday roles in the lineup.
Jun 25 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took a break from flexing his power, instead showing off a little speed by stealing second after his RBI single in the fifth inning. He's hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, going 10-for-38 (.263) with four homers, eight RBI and nine runs scored in that span. For the season, the outfielder is slashing .215/.339/.488 with 20 homers, 42 RBI, 50 runs scored and four steals in 71 contests.
Jun 23 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 6-2 win over the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's power-packed June continued Thursday as he went yard for the second game in a row and the ninth time in 21 contests this month. The left fielder's blast gave the Phillies a lead they wouldn't surrender. He's up to an .842 OPS despite a .218 batting average with 20 homers, 41 RBI, 50 runs scored, three stolen bases and 11 doubles in 69 contests this season.
Jun 16 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, three RBI and a walk in Thursday's 10-1 win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the third inning and added a solo shot in the fourth. He's up to 18 homers on the year, and seven of them have come in 14 games in June as he's turned the power up. The veteran outfielder has added a mediocre .212 batting average, but his .833 OPS, 37 RBI, 43 runs scored and three stolen bases in 62 games have done well to maintain solid fantasy value for the Phillies' main leadoff hitter.
Jun 12 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a steal in Saturday's victory over Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber picked up his third stolen base of the season Saturday. He is on a four-game hit streak and has a hit in seven of his last nine games. It was just his second game this month without a run or RBI. The veteran outfielder has raised his batting average to .211 thanks to a .333 June batting average.
Jun 11 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's victory over the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's homer came in the bottom of the second inning, sending Bryson Stott and Garrett Stubbs home and giving the Phillies a 5-0 lead. It was Schwarber's fifth home run of June and 16th of the season. After batting .196 in May, the outfielder is off to a hot start in June with a .344 average. The lefty hitter is slashing .210/.329/.488 on the season after Friday's game.
Jun 8 2022Schwarber went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs in Wednesday's victory versus the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber singled and scored in the third inning before ripping an RBI double in both the seventh and ninth frames. The four-hit effort was his third multi-hit game in his last six contests, as he's gone 9-for-23 with three homers, three doubles, six RBI and eight runs in those games. After an 0-for-18 stretch at the end of May brought his average down to .181, Schwarber's hot stretch has raised it back above the Mendoza Line to .209 over 196 at-bats in 54 contests in 2022.
Jun 4 2022Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a walk, two solo home runs and a third run scored in Friday's 10-0 rout of the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He set the tone for the night by launching a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning off rookie Chase Silseth before adding another off Jaime Barria in the sixth. Schwarber has gone yard four times in the last four games among his six hits as he looks to climb out of a deep hole at the plate. On the season he's slashing .200/.322/.467 with 14 homers, 27 RBI and 31 runs in 50 contests.
Jun 2 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He took Jarlin Garcia deep in the sixth inning for what proved to be the game-winning hit. Schwarber is batting only .192 on the season but he's gone yard as part of a multi-hit performance in two of the last three games, giving him 12 homers and 25 RBI through 49 games.
May 22 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 7-4 loss to the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has now recorded a home run and two doubles over his last two games, which followed a 15-game stretch in which he recorded a combined three extra-base hits. Per Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Schwarber will start in left field and bat fifth in Sunday's series finale.
May 19 2022Schwarber will start in left field and bat third in Thursday's game against the Padres, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After serving as the Phillies' leadoff man eight times during the team's first 11 games of May, Schwarber has moved down the batting order. He'll now bat third for the third time in four contests, but Schwarber could be pushed down the order once Bryce Harper (elbow) returns and/or if his ongoing struggles at the plate persist. Since clobbering two home runs against the Mets on May 1, Schwarber has slashed .170/.262/.302 with just three extra-base hits while striking out 36.1 percent of the time in his subsequent 14 games.
May 1 2022Schwarber went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three total RBI in Sunday's loss to the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Make it three homers in two games for Schwarber and seven total this season. Both were off future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer on Sunday. Schwarber is no longer leading off and he's batting just .200, but he has a strong .838 OPS on the strength of 12 walks and 10 extra-base hits.
Apr 30 2022Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took New York reliever Adam Ottavino 435-feet deep to center in the seventh inning to give Philadelphia a lead it wouldn't relinquish. It's been a slow start for the 29-year-old as he's currently slashing .169/.298/.423 with eight of his 12 hits going for extra bases.
Apr 25 2022Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a two-run double and a walk in Monday's 8-2 win over the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber drilled a two-run double off Kyle Freeland in the third inning, ending a three-game stretch without any RBI. The 29-year-old is slashing just .177/.261/.419 through 69 plate appearances. He's an improved 8-for-30 (.267) over his last eight outings, however.
Apr 24 2022Schwarber was ejected from Sunday's game against the Brewers in the bottom of the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took a called third strike off the outside corner in the bottom of the ninth and was immediately thrown out of the game after throwing his bat and helmet. He went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts prior to his ejection with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Assuming he doesn't face further discipline from the league, Schwarber should be available for Monday's series opener against the Rockies.
Apr 20 2022Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, an additional RBI and two additional runs during Wednesday's 9-6 win against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has endured some early-season struggles but now has home runs in back-to-back contests in Colorado. The veteran slugger still has some work to do to bring up his slash line, which sits at .170/.264/.447 through 12 games.
Apr 19 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in a 6-5 loss Tuesday in Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit a two-run blast in the sixth off lefty Ty Blach and added a RBI single in the eighth. His home run was just his second hit, and first home run, off a left-handed pitcher as a Phillie. Since dropping out of the leadoff spot, the slugger has gone 4-for-12 with two home runs.
Apr 17 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in an 11-3 loss Sunday in Miami. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After starting the season with a .094 batting average in the leadoff spot, Schwarber was moved to fifth in the lineup and had his best performance since Opening Day. He singled in the second and hit a solo blast in the eighth, snapping a 1-for-28 streak where he struck out 12 times in the process. The 29-year-old has appeared in left field in all but two of those contests.
Apr 16 2022Schwarber will sit for the first time this season Saturday against the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber homered in his first plate appearance as a Phillie but has since gone just 2-for-31 at the plate. He'll get the chance to clear his head Saturday and will avoid a matchup against tough lefty Trevor Rogers. Nick Castellanos will move out to left field, with Alec Bohm serving as the designated hitter.
Apr 8 2022Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a walk in a 9-5 win Friday over Oakland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber led off and homered in his first plate appearance as a Phillie. He later walked and scored in the sixth and added a RBI single in the eighth. Following a breakout season in 2021 that included being named to the National League All-Star team, Schwarber signed a four-year, $79 million contract with Philadelphia. The leftfielder is no stranger to the leadoff role and should continue to hit atop the potent Philadelphia lineup.
Mar 16 2022Schwarber and the Phillies agreed to terms on a contract Wednesday, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. The deal is worth $79 million over four years, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber had a number of suitors vying for his services in free agency, but the prospect of teaming up with reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper in addition to reuniting with his hitting coach from Washington in 2021 (Kevin Long) made Philadelphia an ideal landing spot for the 29-year-old. Though Schwarber has made strides defensively since entering the big leagues in 2015, he could be playing in left field on a part-time basis while seeing a good deal of starts at designated hitter now that the DH spot is universal. Wherever he ends up settling, Schwarber should slot into the heart of the order and provide an ideal power-hitting complement to Harper. Had injuries not intervened and limited him to 113 games, Schwarber would have set career marks in nearly every category last season. Between stops in Washington and Boston, he delivered a .266/.374/.554 slash line to go with 32 home runs, 76 runs and 71 RBI across 471 plate appearances.
Nov 5 2021Schwarber declined his portion of the $11.5 million mutual option with the Red Sox for 2022 on Friday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber had the best OPS of his career at .928 during 2021 to go along with 32 homers and 71 RBI in 113 games, so it's hardly a surprise he's opted to return to the open market. The 28-year-old saw some time at first base after being acquired by the Red Sox at the trade deadline, and that versatility should benefit him some as a free agent. Boston has shown interest in re-signing the slugger, though he should receive significant interest on the open market.
Oct 19 2021Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Monday's ALCS Game 3 victory over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox were already up 2-0 when Schwarber came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, but his blast off Jose Urquidy extended the lead to six, which proved to be well more than the Red Sox would need in their 12-3 victory. Schwarber is now hitting .281 with three homers in eight games this postseason.
Oct 10 2021Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a solo homer, two runs and a strikeout in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber put the Red Sox on the board with his leadoff home run in Sunday's matchup and was one of four players on the team to record multiple hits in the 13-inning game. The 28-year-old has started each of the first four games of the postseason and has gone 6-for-16 with two homers, five runs, two RBI, a stolen base and two runs.
Oct 6 2021Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo homer, two runs and a walk in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Yankees in the AL Wild Card Game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber helped chase starter Gerrit Cole in the third inning of Tuesday's postseason matchup with his homer to lead off the frame. The 28-year-old has hit second in the lineup in each of the last five games and has gone 4-for-14 with a homer, a double, four runs and eight walks during that time.
Sep 29 2021Schwarber isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber will retreat to the bench with left-hander Zac Lowther on the mound for the Orioles. Alex Verdugo will shift to left field while Jose Iglesias enters the lineup at second base.
Sep 28 2021Schwarber went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk during Tuesday's loss to the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber got the scoring started with a 416-foot blast against Bruce Zimmermann in the second inning. The long ball was the 32nd of the year for the 28-year-old, who hit a career high of 38 during his 2019 campaign. In 36 games since joining the Red Sox, Schwarber is batting .295/.423/.541.
Sep 26 2021Schwarber will sit Sunday against the Yankees. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber will sit with lefty Jordan Montgomery on the mound for the Yankees. Alex Verdugo starts in left field, while Bobby Dalbec starts at first base.
Sep 22 2021Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, two home runs, four runs scored and four RBI in Wednesday's 12-5 win over the Mets. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber stuffed the stat sheet Wednesday night en route to his sixth multi-homer game of the season. The power-hitting first baseman has absolutely destroyed the Mets in 2021, having hit nine of his 31 home runs off the team from Queens. The 28-year-old will look to build on this performance as the Red Sox dig in for a high-stakes stretch run.
Sep 19 2021Schwarber is not in Sunday's starting lineup against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber, who started in left field Saturday, steps aside for Alex Verdugo in the series finale. The Red Sox are looking for a sweep of the O's.
Sep 17 2021Schwarber is not starting Friday against the Orioles and left-hander Keegan Akin, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber will move to the bench after driving in a pair and scoring twice in Wednesday's win over Seattle. Alex Verdugo, Enrique Hernandez and Hunter Renfroe will start in the outfield from left to right.
Sep 16 2021Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 9-4 extra-inning win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded as part of Boston's six-run 10th inning. It was the second straight day that Schwarber came through with the bases loaded, giving him five RBI in the final two games of the series. Those key hits came after his fielding error at first base led to a loss in the series opener.
Sep 15 2021Schwarber delivered a three-run double as a pinch hitter in Tuesday's 8-4 win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A day after mishandling a groundball that led to three unearned runs and coming off an 0-for-16 slump, Schwarber delivered a clutch double that gave Boston a lead. With first baseman Bobby Dalbec on a roll, the Red Sox are not desperate to replace him with Schwarber, which was the putative reason for acquiring the latter. Schwarber will continue to get at-bats in the outfield and as the designated hitter on a regular basis.
Sep 14 2021Schwarber is out of the lineup Tuesday versus the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander will take a seat versus lefty Tyler Anderson. He has struggled recently, recording zero hits and striking out nine times in 15 at-bats over his last four contests. Alex Verdugo will take over in left field and bat eighth.
Sep 8 2021Schwarber isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber recorded multi-hit performances in four of the last eight games and slashed .324/.425/.559 with two homers, two doubles, 10 runs and five RBI during that time. He'll take a seat against left-hander Shane McClanahan while Danny Santana starts in left field and bats seventh.
Sep 3 2021Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 8-5 win over Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The outfielder led off the bottom of the first inning with his 29th homer of the year and his fourth with Boston. He added a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning as part of a five-run rally. Schwarber has been excellent with Boston, recording multiple hits in seven of his 18 games with the team. He's posted a .271/.366/.578 slash line with 61 RBI, 56 runs scored, a stolen base and 14 doubles through 382 plate appearances.
Sep 1 2021Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber notched his first hit of the night by taking Ryan Yarbrough deep to center and then later singled home a run in the ninth as the Red Sox put together a mini-comeback late in the game. Schwarber has 28 home runs this season but his long ball Tuesday evening was just his third of the year off a left-handed pitcher. He's been fantastic since his return from a long layoff due to a hamstring injury, as he's slashing .340/.492/.600 with three homers, five RBI, 11 runs scored and 15:14 BB:K across 15 games. The 28-year-old slugger also owns a 1.092 OPS over that span.
Aug 29 2021Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run in Saturday's 5-3 win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After making his first start with Boston at first base in Friday's series opener, Schwarber returned to left field Saturday and came through with his 27th long ball of the season, leaving him within striking range of his third 30-homer campaign. He'll remain in the lineup in left field for Sunday's series finale, but expect Schwarber to gradually take on more reps at first base once he gets more comfortable at the position.
Aug 27 2021Schwarber played one inning at first base in Thursday's 12-2 win over the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber opened as the designated hitter and was given a soft introduction to first base, playing the ninth inning of a blowout win. Being part of a 1-3 fielder's choice and holding runners on first were the extent of his activities.
Aug 26 2021Schwarber may be ready to start at first base Thursday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has been working out at first base in recent weeks and might be ready to go. "I've got to talk to [trainer] Brad [Pearson] about it," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "Kyle, he's eager, so most likely, that's the goal right now. We'll talk about it, see where we are physically and make a decision. I would love for him to play first base [Thursday]." The Red Sox face right-handed John Gant on Thursday, an ideal spot for the lefty-hitting Schwarber.
Aug 25 2021Schwarber went 3-for-6 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 9-6 extra-inning loss to Minnesota. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber's game-tying blast in the ninth inning was the reason for the extra inning, although Hansel Robles' implosion on the mound in the 10th diminished the outfielder's contribution. The long ball was Schwarber's first in nine games with Boston. He's up to 26 on the year to go with a .265/.359/.571 slash line, 55 RBI, 47 runs scored and a stolen base through 340 plate appearances.
Aug 23 2021Schwarber will start in left field and bat second Monday against the Rangers, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After making his first seven starts with the Red Sox as a designated hitter while he recovered from hamstring and groin injuries that he suffered during his time with the Nationals earlier this season, Schwarber will receive the green light to make his debut in the outfield for Boston. The Red Sox plan to eventually expose Schwarber to first base, but for now, he'll likely serve as the primary option in left field, allowing J.D. Martinez to settle back in at DH.
Aug 20 2021Schwarber went 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored in Friday's 6-0 win over Texas. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Through his first five games with Boston, Schwarber has gone 6-for-13 with two doubles, two runs scored and five walks. The 28-year-old has served as the designated hitter so far, but he's expected to play in his natural left field position over the weekend. He has a .263/.355/.576 slash line with 25 home runs, 53 RBI, 46 runs scored and 12 doubles through 321 plate appearances overall.
Aug 19 2021Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Schwarber will begin playing the outfield this weekend against the Rangers, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has seen action exclusively at designated hitter since returning from a hamstring injury. "He's feeling a lot better," Cora said. "You saw him running yesterday. He moved well." Schwarber is also working out at first base, but Cora indicated he's not yet ready for game action at the new position.
Aug 18 2021Schwarber is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora will keep the lefty-hitting Schwarber on the bench for the series finale with southpaw Andrew Heaney on the bump for the Yankees. Since returning from the 10-day injured list Aug. 13, Schwarber has made each of his first four starts with Boston as a designated hitter, going 4-for-11 with two doubles, three walks and three runs. Per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, Cora suggested Tuesday that Schwarber would be cleared to make a start in the outfield during this weekend's series with Texas, and the 28-year-old is expected to be exposed to first base as well during the final five weeks of the season.
Aug 14 2021Schwarber will sit Saturday against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Red Sox are understandably being cautious with Schwarber, not making him start on back-to-back days immediately after he returned from a six-week absence due to a hamstring issue. He'll likely feature on a near-everyday basis soon once the Red Sox are confident he can handle the workload, with some of his starts potentially coming at first base. Bobby Dalbec will occupy that position Saturday, with Alex Verdugo in left field and J.D. Martinez serving as the designated hitter.
Aug 13 2021Schwarber (hamstring/groin) went 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored in Friday's 8-1 win over Baltimore. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Batting sixth and serving as the designated hitter in his Boston debut, Schwarber wasn't able to make much of an impact with the bat. He still got on base twice, scoring both times on doubles by Bobby Dalbec and Jarren Duran. Schwarber was on a career-year pace prior to a six-week stint on the injured list. He has a .251/.342/.566 slash line with 25 home runs, 53 RBI, 44 runs scored and a stolen base through 307 plate appearances, He should be poised for a regular role in left field going forward, which could end up cutting into Duran's playing time.
Aug 12 2021Schwarber (hamstring/groin) could rejoin the Red Sox as early as Friday, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, and manager Alex Cora sounded as though the 28-year-old could be available during Boston's weekend series against the Orioles. The Red Sox are hopeful that Schwarber will be able to play first base at some point, but the team may use him as a designated hitter early on after he's activated.
Aug 11 2021Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Schwarber (hamstring/groin) could begin a rehab assignment Thursday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber went through a full workout Tuesday, and he apparently felt good afterward since his return to game action is imminent. The 28-year-old suffered a minor setback last weekend due to tightness in his leg/groin, but he's back on track and remains hopeful that he'll be able to return from the 10-day IL in mid-to-late August.
Aug 10 2021Manager Alex Cora announced that Schwarber (hamstring/groin) completed a full workout Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is excellent news for the Red Sox, as it was reported Sunday that Schwarber would need to have his rehab work scaled back after he experienced tightness in his left groin. Given Cora's update, it sounds as if the slugger is already able to ramp back up the intensity of his workouts, which indicates the previous setback might not postpone his activation much, if at all. Assuming that Schwarber continues to progress well in the coming days, he should remain on track to begin a rehab assignment in the near future as he targets a mid-to-late-August return from the 10-day injured list.
Aug 8 2021Schwarber (hamstring) recently experienced tightness in his left groin and will have his rehab work scaled back, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber ramped up his rehab program this week to participating in running and fielding drills while working his way back from a right hamstring strain, but he'll reduce the intensity of those efforts since the groin issue surfaced. The setback isn't expected to significantly delay the 28-year-old's return from the injured list, but it's obviously a concerning development that he's now dealing with injuries in both thighs.
Aug 4 2021Schwarber (hamstring) ran the bases at Comerica Park on Wednesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Schwarber wasn't able to run the bases at full speed, he took grounders at first base afterward. Assuming he feels good after participating in baseball activities, the 28-year-old is expected to begin a brief rehab assignment soon.
Aug 3 2021Schwarber (hamstring) isn't expected to require a lengthy rehab assignment, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Alex Cora also mentioned that Schwarber had a productive workout Monday at first base, a position at which he will try to learn and maximize playing time with the Red Sox. An exact start date for the slugger's rehab assignment should become clear within a week or so.
Jul 31 2021Schwarber (hamstring) has been taking batting practice and expects to begin a minor-league rehab assignment soon, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hitting doesn't appear to be an issue at this point for Schwarber, who has been taking batting practice for a few weeks now. Rather, fielding and running without hamstring discomfort are the hurdles he must overcome before returning to the field. The Red Sox figure to be cautious with their newly acquired slugger's hamstring, especially if they're planning to deploy him at first base, where he's only played one game in his big-league career.
Jul 29 2021Schwarber (hamstring) will be traded from the Nationals to the Red Sox in exchange for Aldo Ramirez (elbow) on Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber is the latest player to be dealt by the Nationals, following the departures ofMax Scherzer, Trea Turner (COVID-19) and Brad Hand earlier in the day. He's been sidelined since July 3 with a right hamstring strain but has recovered enough to jog and take batting practice recently. There has not been a concrete timetable for his return, though the Red Sox must be fairly confident that he can hit the field soon enough to make a significant impact in the playoff race.
Dec 2 2020Schwarber was non-tendered by the Cubs on Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All signs point to the Cubs embracing a rebuild, so they opted not to pay a left fielder/designated hitter for past performance in arbitration. He has always mashed righties, but probably fits best as a DH who can sit against southpaws. Schwarber hit .188 in 224 plate appearances last season, but he hit .250/.339/.531 with 38 home runs in 2019 and is only turning 28 in March.
Sep 25 2020Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 10-0 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit his 11th home run of the season in the second inning against White Sox starter Dylan Cease. The slugger is still batting under .200 for the year, so it's really been an all-or-nothing type campaign. He should continue to get regular playing time in left field heading into the playoffs next week.
Sep 21 2020Schwarber went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in Monday's 5-0 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A night after being removed early from a game for an uninspired effort retrieving a ball in left field, Schwarber looked locked in. He's still batting under .200, but the 27-year-old is capable of producing good numbers in spurts, so the Cubs will hope he heats up for the playoffs. Schwarber was removed from this game as well, but it was for a pinch-runner in the eighth inning, so it appears as if Sunday's transgression is in the rearview mirror,
Sep 20 2020Schwarber was removed from Sunday's game against the Twins in the top of the third inning, and manager David Ross said "he's fine" when asked about an injury during the broadcast. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In the top of the second inning, Schwarber was a bit slow in retrieving a ball hit to the corner by Jake Cave and it ended up going for a triple. It's possible that Ross was sending a message by removing Schwarber for that effort, though more details will likely emerge after the game. Schwarber went 0-for-1 as the cleanup hitter while he was in the contest. Cameron Maybin replaced him in left field.
Sep 10 2020Schwarber is not in Thursday's lineup against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He will head to the bench against a righty (Sonny Gray), which is a bit of a rarity for Schwarber. For what little it's worth, Schwarber has a .214 average with five strikeouts and zero home runs in 14 career at-bats against Gray. Cameron Maybin will start in left field while David Bote starts at designated hitter.
Sep 2 2020Schwarber will be on the bench Wednesday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hits the bench even with righty Joe Musgrove on the mound for Pittsburgh. He hasn't actually been platooned this season, as he's started against all but one lefty and all but two righties. Steven Souza Jr. will be the left fielder Wednesday.
Aug 30 2020Schwarber went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit a solo home run against Luis Castillo in the fourth inning, then capped off a big day with a grand slam in the ninth. The lefty slugger now has five home runs in his last eight games and nine total for the season to go along with 19 RBI.
Aug 28 2020Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was one of two Cubs to find success against Tyler Mahle, with the other being Anthony Rizzo, who also homered in the first inning before Mahle went into shutdown mode. With three homers in his last five games, Schwarber is now up to seven for the season and his slash line sits at .231/.333/.471 -- very close to his career line.
Aug 26 2020Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Joe Jimenez yard for a solo home run in the sixth inning to record his sixth home run of the season. He has gone deep three times in his past nine starts, but has done little else in that span as he's gone just 7-for-34. Overall, Schwarber is hitting .220/.328/.440 with 15 runs and 13 RBI across 116 plate appearances this season.
Aug 23 2020Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 2-1 win over the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs were getting shut out until the sixth inning, when Schwarber hit a two-run shot off Dylan Cease, the slugger's fifth home run of the season. Schwarber should continue to hit in the middle of Chicago's lineup and supply good power numbers.
Aug 18 2020Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer run and three strikeouts in a win over the Cardinals on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber whiffed thrice for the third time this season, but he made his one hit count, launching a two-run shot to right field in the fifth inning. The veteran is batting .229 on the campaign, though he has hit four long balls and driven in 10 runs.
Aug 17 2020Schwarber is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Schwarber will be withheld from the starting nine for the afternoon contest, expect him to check back into the lineup for the nightcap. While Schwarber rests up, Kris Bryant will cover left field in his stead. Through the Cubs' first 12 games of August, Schwarber is slashing .263/.378/.474 with two home runs, seven runs and five RBI.
Aug 16 2020Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber didn't go deep, but he still managed to be productive Sunday. The slugging outfielder has a .780 OPS, 11 runs scored, eight RBI and three home runs through 19 games.
Aug 13 2020Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber took Milwaukee starter Brett Anderson deep in the second inning for his third home run of the season. The slugger hasn't provided a ton of power in the early going, but it was nice to see him go deep against a lefty. Last season, Schwarber had a .756 OPS and six home runs against lefties versus a .900 OPS and 32 long balls against righties.
Aug 12 2020Schwarber was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against Cleveland with a right knee contusion. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was hit by a pitch in Tuesday's contest, and the injury will keep him out of the starting nine for Game 2 of the Cubs' series against Cleveland. Manager David Ross said that he could be available as a pinch hitter Wednesday but that he'd try to stay away from using him. Kris Bryant will shift to left field with David Bote entering the lineup as the third baseman.
Aug 3 2020Schwarber will be the designated hitter and bat fifth in Monday's game against the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This will be just the second time in 10 games this season that Schwarber will serve as the DH, so manager David Ross has been true to his word that the slugger would frequently play in the field. Schwarber has posted an .851 OPS and two home runs through the Cubs' first nine games. Expect him to be back in left field as soon as Tuesday.
Aug 1 2020Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber started in left field and delivered his second homer of the season -- a two-run bomb in the eighth inning off reliever Michael Feliz. He got off to a strong start this season, reaching base in all but one of his first eight games in 2020.
Jul 26 2020Schwarber is starting in left field and batting fourth in Sunday's game against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That's three straight starts in left field to begin the season for Schwarber. Manager David Ross spoke before the year about how he didn't view Schwarber as the team's DH, and so far, he's sticking to that. Victor Caratini and Willson Contreras have alternated between catching and serving as DH so far in 2020.
Jul 25 2020Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer in Saturday's loss to the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The home run cut Milwaukee's lead to 4-3, though the Cubs stalled from there in the 8-3 loss. Schwarber hit a career-high 38 home runs last season, and while that number seems unattainable in a 60-game season, he should still provide good power numbers in 2020.
Jun 29 2020Chicago manager David Ross told Schwarber that he won't be the team's sole DH this season, with the Cubs planning to rotate players through the position instead, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has said previously he prefers playing the field over the idea of becoming a full-time DH, and this would seem to confirm that he'll get his wish. While the slugger has improved in left field, his power bat is still his calling card, so the Cubs will likely keep him fresh by having him DH often. Steven Souza has also been mentioned as a likely DH candidate because he's returning from a serious knee injury, and Ian Happ could fit the bill, too. Schwarber is a decent bet to lead the team in DH at-bats this season, but Ross figures to stick to his word and mix and match in the position to some degree.
May 14 2020Schwarber has said previously he prefers playing the field over the idea of becoming a full-time DH during his career, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has improved in left field over the course of his MLB career, and the 27-year-old seems to take pride in playing defense and not being known as only a slugger. However, he also owns a .299 average and 1.046 OPS in 22 career games as a DH during interleague play, so he may be the Cubs' best option for the role if MLB adopts a universal DH for some type of shortened 2020 season. Wittenmyer lists Ian Happ, Steven Souza and Jason Kipnis as other potential DH candidates, though it makes a lot of sense to put Schwarber in the spot most days.
May 4 2020Schwarber is a likely candidate to DH this year if MLB adopts a universal DH when the season is able to begin, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The universal DH idea has been tossed around as part of various proposals to start a compacted season with reduced travel. Schwarber would be a natural choice for the position, allowing the Cubs to deploy speedier options across the outfield. It could benefit the 27-year-old's offensive numbers as well, as he wouldn't be pulled from games for a defensive replacement.
Apr 7 2020Schwarber went up the middle or the opposite way on 70.5 percent of his hits in 2019, a new career high, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber had his best season as a pro in 2019, registering a career-best .870 OPS, and using all parts of the field was part of the reason for his success. Sharma also reports that the slugger showed improvement against high fastballs and upped his contact rate as well. Schwarber will always strike out a fair amount given his approach at the plate, but if he continues to show improvement in these areas, his overall offensive production should continue to climb.
Mar 24 2020Schwarber posted a 33.3 percent strikeout rate in 11 Cactus League games before MLB suspended play. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The small sample size caveat applies here, but it's still a bit unsettling to see strikeouts be an issue for Schwarber. The slugger had cut his strikeout rate each of the past two seasons after fanning 30.9 percent of the time in 2017. He also saw his OPS increase in each of the last two seasons. Schwarber's game will always involve a decent number of strikeouts, but keeping that rate around last year's 25.6 percent or lower will certainly be useful.
Feb 23 2020Schwarber is likely to remain the Cubs' emergency catcher this year but not get regular playing time there, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber appeared just once behind the plate last year and didn't play there at all in 2018, so he's far removed from being a regular catcher, and that doesn't appear likely to change. Chicago may even elect to carry a third catcher with rosters expanded to 26 players, so Schwarber will primarily play in left field again.
Jan 10 2020Schwarber agreed to a one-year, $7,010,000 deal with the Cubs, avoiding arbitration, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is his second of three arbitration-eligible years before he becomes a free agent. He gets a nice raise from the $3.39 million he earned this past season.
Sep 28 2019Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-6 win over the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs aren't going to the playoffs this year but that's certainly no fault of Schwarber's, as the 26-year-old has put together the best season of his five-year MLB career. The slugger is now up to 38 home runs and 92 RBI with one more game to go Sunday.
Sep 26 2019Schwarber is not in the lineup Thursday against the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs are resting most of their starters after getting eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday. As such, Schwarber will give way to Tony Kemp in left field for Thursday's series finale.
Sep 22 2019Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a run scored in Saturday's 9-8 loss to the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber has been locked in lately, as he now has back-to-back multi-hit efforts, and he's slashing a robust .389/.452/.722 over his last 10 games. The slugger has already set new career highs with 37 home runs and 91 RBI this season, and he should remain a fixture in the middle of the Cubs' lineup in the final week.
Sep 21 2019Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 2-1 loss to the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber didn't get much support from the rest of the lineup, but that didn't keep the slugger from staying hot at the plate. Over his past 10 games, Schwarber is slashing .324/.381/.622 with a triple, two home runs, three doubles and nine RBI.
Sep 17 2019Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber was locked in but unfortunately his teammates were not, as the rest of the lineup went a combined 2-for-28. The slugging outfielder now has two three-hit efforts over his last three starts as he continues to put together a strong campaign.
Sep 16 2019Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Monday's 8-2 win over the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber hit his second home run in as many days and fifth this month in 15 games. The slugger has already set a new career high with 37 home runs this season, and the way he's been swinging the bat lately, 40 long balls is definitely within reach for Schwarber with 12 games left for the Cubs.
Sep 15 2019Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, three runs scored and three total RBI in Sunday's 16-6 win over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, then plated two more on his 36th home run of the season in the seventh. The slugger has already set career highs in home runs and RBI (85) this year with 13 games to go.
Sep 5 2019Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a grand slam in Thursday's 10-5 win over the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber cleared the bases with a triple in a win Monday and did one better with his Thursday grand slam. Despite a middling .239 batting average, the 26-year-old has been productive with an .857 OPS, 34 home runs and 81 RBI, which all represent new career bests.
Sep 3 2019Schwarber went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a walk in a win over the Mariners on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Schwarber fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle, collecting his fourth three-hit game of the season in the victory. His homer in the seventh was a shot to right field that traveled 412 feet. The 26-year-old has slugged 33 long balls and driven in 77 runs this season while slashing .236/.329/.515 in 514 plate appearances.

Ian Happ will get the start in left field Monday.
Jul 15 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres. The lefty-hitting Schwarber will retreat to the bench with southpaw Eric Lauer on the hill for the opposition. In Schwarber's stead, the switch-hitting Ben Zobrist will draw a start in left field.

Despite frequently sitting against southpaws -- he has just 49 at-bats against them this season -- Schwarber is likely to surpass 30 home runs for the second consecutive season, while also improving his ratio stats considerably.
Jul 13 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup versus San Diego on Friday.Schwarber will head to the bench with left-hander Clayton Richard on the mound for the Padres. In his place, Ian Happ will man left field and bat eighth.

Jul 9 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup Monday against the Giants.Schwarber will take a seat against the left-handed Andrew Suarez, with Ian Happ getting the start in left field. Schwarber is hitting a solid .249/.376/.498 on the year. His 16.6 percent walk rate ranks fifth among all qualified hitters, and his defense has somewhat surprisingly graded out well, with his 6.7 UZR ranking second among all outfielders.
Jul 8 2018Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Reds.Schwarber scored the first Cubs' run of the game in the second inning, then came around again in the fourth to make it 3-3. The 25-year-old slugger now has 43 runs this season to go along with 17 home runs and 39 RBI.
Jul 4 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Tigers.Cubs manager Joe Maddon will hold out of a trio of lefty-hitting mainstays in the lineup (Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward) with southpaw Francisco Liriano on the hill for the Tigers. After a trying 2017 campaign, Schwarber has re-emerged as a force in the heart of the order for Chicago with an .876 OPS across 295 plate appearances, but he has yet to completely solve same-handed pitching. He maintains a .283 slugging mark and has struck out 31.6 percent of the time versus southpaws this season.
Jul 3 2018Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Tigers.Schwarber connected for his 17th home run of the season in the eighth inning against Detroit reliever Warwick Saupold. The 25-year-old slugger seems well on his way to his second straight season with 30 or more home runs.
Jun 30 2018Schwarber is out of Saturday's lineup against the Twins.Lefty Adalberto Mejia is starting for Minnesota, so Schwarber will take his customary spot on the bench. He is hitting .212/.354/.450 with six home runs and a 29:17 K:BB in 80 June at-bats. Ben Zobrist is starting in left field and hitting sixth.
Jun 29 2018Schwarber went 1-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run in Friday's 10-6 win over the Twins. While his 16 homers on the year leaves him slightly behind last year's per-game pace, Schwarber's increased plate discipline has boosted his fantasy value significantly in leagues that use OBP -- he's drawn 48 walks in 72 games, and his .370 OBP is 55 points higher than last season's mark.
Jun 27 2018Schwarber is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Dodgers, Eric Stephen of TrueBlueLA.com reports.Per usual, he will take a seat with a lefty (Alex Wood) on the hill for the opposition. Ben Zobrist will get the start in left field, hitting fifth.
Jun 22 2018Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Reds. He's found his power stroke lately, going yard three times in the last four games to give Schwarber 15 homers on the year. He isn't doing much other than hitting home runs, however -- he's hitting only .203 (12-for-59) in June with five homers and 12 RBI in 19 games.
Jun 20 2018Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Dodgers.Schwarber went deep for the second straight game, giving him 14 home runs for the year as he aims for his second straight season with 30 or more long balls. The 25-year-old is now batting .243 with an .864 OPS, numbers that are both up from 2017 as Schwarber has cut his strikeout rate and made more consistent contact at the plate this season.
Jun 16 2018Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in Friday's win over the Cardinals.Schwarber took Michael Wacha deep in the fifth inning for his 12th home run of the year. The 25-year-old now has 31 RBI and 30 runs along with a .242 batting average on the year. He's holding a solid .364 on-base percentage but is striking out over 25 percent of the time. Schwarber's production seems to come in bunches, as is the case in June where his two home runs and seven RBI have come in two games.
Jun 12 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Brewers.Schwarber gets a rare day off against a right-handed pitcher, with Ben Zobrist starting in left field. The young outfielder has a solid .244/.372/.483 line on the season, though he's hitless in his last five games.
Jun 8 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Pirates.Schwarber will head to the bench Friday after starting the last five games for the Cubs. Ian Happ will start in left field and bat eighth in the series opener against the Pirates.
Jun 1 2018Schwarber went 1-for-1 with a three-run home run and four RBI in Friday's 7-4 victory over the Mets.Schwarber drove in a run during the seventh with a sacrifice fly, and then he followed it up with a three-run blast in the eighth, putting Chicago up 6-2. He continues to display impressive power at the dish, as he's hit 11 home runs to go with 28 RBI through 47 games this year.
Jun 1 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Mets.Schwarber will head to the bench Friday in favor of Ben Zobrist, who is starting in left field and batting leadoff. The 25-year-old has struggled to make consistent contact but continues to show good plate disipline, and finished with a .234/.372/.429 slash line and three home runs in May.
May 29 2018Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Pirates. The 25-year-old slugger now has 10 home runs this season in 148 at-bats, and last season's total of 30 definitely looks within reach. Schwarber has also been able to cut down on his strikeout rate this year, which has helped him to a .257 average so far after posting a .211 mark in 2017.
May 26 2018Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored Saturday against the Giants.Schwarber homered and later doubled, the third time he has accomplished both in a single game this season. He has had a quiet May in terms of power -- he's slugging just .345 for the month -- but has maintained an excellent on-base percentage. That has helped him keep a baseline level of value when he isn't hitting for a lot of power and has also made his production more consistent.
May 25 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants, Bruce Miles of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.Left-hander Derek Holland is on the hill for the Giants on Friday, sending Schwarber to the bench. Switch-hitter Ian Happ will take over in left field and bat seventh for the Cubs.
May 25 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants, Bruce Miles of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.Left-hander Derek Holland is on the hill for the Giants on Friday, sending Schwarber to the bench. Switch-hitter Ian Happ will take over in left field and bat seventh for the Cubs.
May 24 2018Schwarber is playing better defense this season, which could allow him to stay in games longer, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Schwarber has played better in left field this season, particularly in the last five games, when he's nailed several runners on the bases. "Overall it has been going well out there," Schwarber said. "I'm just trying to make smart decisions and get the ball to where it needs to be." Cubs manager Joe Maddon has routinely pulled Schwarber for a defensive replacement late in games the last few years, but if the 25-year-old continues to show improvement in the field, he could stay in there longer, which would mean more at-bats.
May 20 2018Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's win over the Reds. The long ball snapped a streak of 16 straight games without a homer, the second-longest homerless streak of his career, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com. Schwarber later got tossed from the game for arguing balls and strikes, his first career ejection. The 25-year-old now has his batting line up to .248/.382/.496.
May 19 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader in Cincinnati.Schwarber was 0-for-2 in the Game 1 loss to the Reds, but did earn four walks, fitting his recent form. Similarly, the 25-year-old is 2-for-21 over his last seven games but has worked 10 base-on-balls in that same stretch. Ian Happ will take over in left field for the Cubs with left-hander Sal Romano on the mound for the Reds in Saturday's matinee.
May 17 2018Schwarber is not in the starting nine versus the Braves on Thursday.Ian Happ will man left field for the series finale with southpaw Max Fried on the bump. Look for Schwarber to join the lineup for Friday's series opener against Cincinnati as Homer Bailey takes the hill.
May 13 2018Schwarber went 0-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and his first two steals of the season in Sunday's loss to the White Sox.Schwarber entered the game with just four career steals, so speed isn't really known as a big part of his game. However, it seemed like the Cubs were running at will on White Sox starter Lucas Giolito and catcher Omar Narvaez, as four different players tallied a total of five steals. Chalk this up to a team having a good read on a battery and don't expect Schwarber to tally too many more steals moving forward.
May 9 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup against Miami on Wednesday.Schwarber will retreat to the bench with left-hander Wei-Yin Chen on the hill for the Marlins. In his place, Ian Happ will start in left field and bat seventh. Schwarber will likely return to the lineup for Friday's series opener against the White Sox.
May 7 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup Monday against the Marlins. As usual, Schwarber takes a seat against a lefty, with the Cubs squaring off against Jarlin Garcia. Schwarber has started against every righty but just two lefties so far this season. It's a smart tactic for the Cubs, as his OPS is 306 points higher against righties than lefties over the course of his career. The protection is helping him have a career season so far this year, hitting .269/.376/.548 with seven homers in 109 plate appearances.
May 2 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup against Colorado on Wednesday.Schwarber will take a seat on the bench with left-hander Tyler Anderson pitching for the Rockies. In his place, Ben Zobrist gets a start in left field while batting sixth in the order.
Apr 30 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies. As usual, Schwarber will head to the bench as the Cubs face a left-hander. The 25-year-old is having a career season at the plate, hitting .276/.389/.592 with seven homers in 90 plate appearances. He's trimmed his strikeout rate to 24.4 percent while raising his walk rate to 15.6 percent. Ian Happ will handle left field in his absence.
Apr 27 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup against the Brewers on Friday.Schwarber will retreat to the bench with southpaw Brent Suter taking the mound for Milwaukee. During Thursday's victory, Schwarber tallied the lone run of the ballgame, hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning. Ian Happ will draw a start in left field and bat sixth.
Apr 26 2018Morrow went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Brewers.Schwarber's seventh home run of the season, which came in the sixth inning against Chase Anderson, was the difference in this one. The young slugger is now hitting .286 with an elite 1.027 OPS, and he should continue to post good numbers in a strong Chicago lineup.
Apr 24 2018Schwarber went 2-for-5 with two solo homers in Tuesday's win over the Indians.Schwarber, an Ohio native, enjoyed a successful homecoming in Tuesday's rout of the Indians. His two homers were his fifth and sixth of the season, increasing the slugging left fielder's slash line to an elite .302/.413/.635 mark. It's still very early in the season, but Schwarber is on pace to put up career-best numbers in 2018.
Apr 21 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup Saturday against the Rockies.Schwarber had three hits and a homer Friday in Colorado, but he won't get the chance to take advantage of Coors Field on Saturday as the Rockies turn to the left-handed Tyler Anderson. Ian Happ will handle left field while Albert Almora gets the start in center.
Apr 20 2018Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and four RBI in Friday's win over the Rockies. The bomb was Schwarber's fourth of the season, and he's now hitting a robust .283 with a .972 OPS. Just as encouraging Friday was the fact that the young slugger did not strike out. If he can continue to keep the whiffs in check, Schwarber could improve upon last season's .211 average while once again making a run at 30 home runs.
Apr 14 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup against the Braves on Saturday.Schwarber will retreat to the bench with left-hander Sean Newcomb getting the start for Atlanta. In his place, Ben Zobrist draws the assignment in left while batting fifth in the order. Over 12 appearances this season, Schwarber is hitting .244/.326/.537 with three home runs and five RBI.
Apr 12 2018Schwarber went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's loss to the Pirates.Schwarber accounted for all of the Cubs' offense in a 6-1 loss. The young slugger now has three home runs through the team's first 12 games, and his .270 batting average is a welcome sight in the early going after he hit just .212 last season.
Apr 11 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Pirates.Schwarber will take a seat against the left-handed Steven Brault, with Ben Zobrist receiving a start in left field. He isn't sitting against every lefty, but most his days off this season will certainly come against southpaws. He has a very strong platoon split so far in his career, with a 127 wRC+ against righties and a 54 wRC+ (and a 38.3 percent strikeout rate) against lefties. So far this season, Schwarber's .212/.316/.455 line against both sides is nearly an exact match for the .211/.315/.467 line he posted in 2017.
Apr 10 2018Schwarber went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored Tuesday as the Cubs lost to the Pirates 8-5.Schwarber had been in a bit of a slump heading into Tuesday's game, as he'd gone hitless across his previous five outings. Over 10 games this season, Schwarber has struck out in 31.6 percent of his plate appearances, resulting in him struggling to consistently produce hits.
Apr 6 2018Schwarber will hit in the three-hole Friday against the Brewers, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.Schwarber was initially slated to hit fifth, but he'll move up to the third spot in the order to replace Anthony Rizzo, who was scratched due to back tightness. Schwarber is hitless in the Cubs' last two games, but he holds a solid .278 batting average with two homers to start the season.
Apr 5 2018Schwarber is not in the lineup Thursday against the Brewers.Schwarber is seeing the ball well so far, as he already has two homers and holds a .400 on-base percentage. However, he'll head to the bench for a night off to avoid a lefty-on-lefty matchup with Milwaukee starter Brent Suter. Ian Happ will slide over to left field to replace him, allowing Albert Almora to log a start in center field. Schwarber will be available off the bench to pinch-hit if a favorable matchup against a Milwaukee bullpen arm arises.
Apr 3 2018Schwarber is out of the lineup Tuesday for the first time this season.Schwarber has started in left field and hit fifth in each game for the Cubs so far this season. He'll take a seat in favor of Ben Zobrist on Tuesday as the Cubs face the left-handed Cody Reed. There's no reason to fear a platoon for Schwarber, though, as he started against the first two southpaws the Cubs played against this season. Despite his team's struggles, Schwarber is off to a hot start, hitting .294 with two homers through five games.
Mar 31 2018Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Marlins.Schwarber has homered in two of the Cubs' first three games of the season. In the other game, the young slugger went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. This is a great illustration of what to expect with Schwarber, as he delivers tremendous power but also owns a career 30.1 percent strikeout rate. Still, fantasy owners have to be happy with the hot start to the year.
Mar 29 2018Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's win over the Marlins.Schwarber adjusted his swing in spring training, as he focused on using his hands more and not swinging as hard, and it looked good on Opening Day. Another encouraging sign was that Schwarber drew a walk and did not strike out in this one. If he can get the strikeout rate down a little bit in 2018, Schwarber should be able to improve upon the .211 average he posted last season.
Mar 18 2018Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Schwarber is using his hands more in his swing this spring and is not swinging as hard as he used to, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports."The one thing I'm seeing is that he's not swinging as hard," Maddon said. "It's more hands, less arms, and with that it's easier -- he's doing it easier." Maddon said the refined approach is also helping Schwarber in two-strike counts, as he's focusing more on making contact. The 25-year-old is slashing .361/.439/.750 this spring, so the new approach seems to be working, though he is still striking out nearly 32 percent of the time. Schwarber is always a guy who will strike out a fair amount, but he makes up for it with his power potential. If he can make a little more contact and work on getting his .211 batting average from 2017 up a bit, he could be in store for a big 2018.
Mar 11 2018Schwarber went 1-for-3 with his third Cactus League home run in Sunday's loss to the Athletics. The home run came off tough Oakland left-hander Sean Manaea. Last season, Schwarber hit just .171/.306/.341 against lefties with only three home runs. If Schwarber can show improvements against left-handers, he could earn more at-bats in 2018 and improve upon his overall numbers of 30 home runs and 59 RBI from a season ago.
Jan 22 2018Schwarber changed his training regimen and diet during the offseason and has lost approximately 20 pounds, Lauren Comitor of The Athletic Chicago reports. "I want to be the best player I can be and I think that it starts there," Schwarber said Friday at the 2018 Cubs Convention, when asked about his new physique. "It's not going to go out there, hit .500. You just gotta control the things you can control, and this is one thing I can control."Expectations were high for Schwarber entering 2017 after he missed most of the 2016 campaign with a torn ACL and MCL before returning to action in the World Series in impressive fashion, but the slugging outfielder was unable to deliver. Though Schwarber smacked 30 home runs, his pronounced struggles against left-handed pitching coupled with his defensive shortcomings resulted in settling into a platoon role for much of the season. While improved fitness should help Schwarber from a defensive standpoint, he'll need to demonstrate better management of the strike zone to alleviate the deep concerns fantasy owners may have about his batting average, which could remain an eyesore even if the Cubs regularly shield him from southpaws.
Oct 15 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup for Game 2 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Sunday.Schwarber posted a bleak .171 batting average against southpaws during the regular season. With the left-handed Rich Hill set to take the mound Sunday, Schwarber will sit while Jon Jay starts in left field.
Oct 12 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Game 5 against the Nationals on Thursday. As was the case in Game 2, Schwarber will once again head to the bench with lefty Gio Gonzalez toeing the rubber for the Nationals. He'll once again be available off the bench, and with the likes of Max Scherzer and Tanner Roark (both righties) available in relief, he'll likely appear as a pinch hitter sometime during the latter stages of Thursday's decisive Game 5.
Oct 11 2017Schwarber was taken off the lineup card for Game 4 of the NLDS against Washington on Wednesday.Following the Nationals' change from Tanner Roark to Stephen Strasburg, manager Joe Maddon elected to put Jason Heyward into the starting nine in Schwarber's place. Schwarber will once again be available off the bench, and will likely appear as a pinch hitter during the latter stages of Wednesday's contest.
Oct 7 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup for Game 2 of the NLDS against the Nationals on Saturday.Schwarber, who went 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts during Friday's victory, will head to the bench with left-hander Gio Gonzalez on the mound for Washington. In his place, Ian Happ will start in left while Albert Almora is set to patrol center.
Sep 30 2017Schwarber went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in Saturday's win over the Reds.He launched one deep to center off Jackson Stephens for his 30th home run of the season, and later drove in two more against Stephens after a wild pitch put runners in scoring position. Schwarber struggled mightily early on and was ultimately demoted to Triple-A in June, but he's hit .254 with 17 homers since the All-Star break.
Sep 27 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup against St. Louis on Wednesday.Schwarber went 1-for-2 with one RBI and a run scored during the club's 8-7 loss during Tuesday's contest, and will be replaced by Ben Zobrist in left field for Wednesday's game. Over his last eight appearances, Schwarber has gone 4-for-20 (.200 average) from the plate with three home runs and four RBI.
Sep 25 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Monday against the Cardinals.Since the start of September, Schwarber has appeared in 17 games and posted a .273/.333/.636 line to go with five home runs. He'll sit out Monday night while Ben Zobrist starts in left field.
Sep 23 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Brewers.Schwarber has not been in the lineup versus a left-handed starter since Aug. 12, so it should not be surprising that he is sitting out Saturday against Brewers lefty Brent Suter. Jon Jay will cover left field in Schwarber's place.
Sep 22 2017Schwarber went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Brewers.Schwarber got the scoring started for the Cubs in a key divisional game by taking Milwaukee starter Kyle Davies deep in the second inning. The 24-year-old could have maybe done more damage, but he departed the game in the sixth inning as part of a double switch. Schwarber has been hot in September, delivering five home runs in 15 games and slashing .293/.356/.683.
Sep 20 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rays.In a low-scoring game against Tampa Bay ace Chris Archer, Schwarber's second inning blast proved critical for the Cubs. The 24-year-old is hitting just .208 this year, but with 28 home runs, he's delivering some value to fantasy owners, and his long-term outlook remains bright.
Sep 17 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Cardinals.Schwarber took starter Lance Lynn deep in the fourth inning for his 27th home run. Three of those long balls have come in the past six games, as the 2014 fourth overall pick has been riding a power surge of late. Schwarber's .207 average leaves much to be desired, but he's able to offset some of those batting average woes with a 12.4 percent walk rate in addition to his elite power.
Sep 16 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup against the Cardinals on Saturday.Schwarber retreats to the bench following four consecutive starts, going 5-for-14 (.357 average) at the plate during that span. Jon Jay draws the start in left for Saturday's affair.
Sep 12 2017Schwarber went 3-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk and two runs against the Mets on Tuesday.Schwarber's last six trips to the plate have seen him homer twice, walk twice and add a pair of singles; unfortunately, they've also been spread over a period of four days in which he's started just one time. A relative lack of playing time is the biggest factor holding back his fantasy value right now, as Schwarber's last 22 games have seen him make a turnaround with the bat -- .278 with seven homers and a noticeably improved strikeout rate (25.0 percent).
Sep 10 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Sunday against the Brewers.Schwarber hit a home run as a pinch-hitter Saturday, but will be withheld from the starting lineup for the third consecutive game Sunday. Kris Bryant will move to left field while Tommy La Stella heads to the hot corner.
Sep 9 2017Schwarber went 1-for-1 with a solo homer and a walk in Saturday's loss to the Brewers.Schwarber launched his 25th homer of the season in the eighth-inning to put the columns on the board in a game that was long out of hand. This was his first homer in a month in which he's batting .250, and aside from his ability to leave the yard, he hasn't provided much else to fantasy owners.
Sep 9 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Brewers.Schwarber has struggled at the plate to start the month, going just 3-for-15 (.200) with no extra-base hits, so he'll head to the bench for the fourth time in five games as manager Joe Maddon gives veteran Jon Jay another start in left field. With a weak .199 batting average in 377 at-bats this season, Schwarber's playing time could be inconsistent down the stretch.
Sep 8 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup for Friday's matchup against the Brewers.Schwarber has struggled at the plate lately. Over his last 10 games he's gone 5-for-31 (.161) and struck out 11 times across 35 at-bats. His recent troubles have brought his line down to .199/.309/.435 for the season. Jon Jay will start in left field and hit leadoff with Schwarber out.
Sep 6 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup against the Pirates on Wednesday.Schwarber heads to the bench for the second straight game and third time in the past four contests. In his place, Jon Jay draws another start in left while leading off against Gerrit Cole.
Sep 5 2017Schwarber is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Pirates. With a lefty (Steven Brault) on the hill for Pittsburgh, Schwarber takes a seat with Jon Jay starting in left field and leading off. Schwarber went on a mini tear after initially getting recalled from Triple-A, but he is hitting just .185/.254/.426 with four home runs and 18 strikeouts over his last 54 at-bats.
Sep 3 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves. After back-to-back starts in left, Schwarber will give way to Ian Happ for the afternoon series finale. Things have been looking slightly more promising for Scwarber of late, as he owns a .882 OPS with 12 home runs since the All-Star break. A strong offensive finish could help the Cubs with their playoff push, while also helping fantasy owners recoup some of their early-season losses.
Aug 31 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Braves.Schwarber will head to the bench for a breather after knocking a pair of homers in Wednesday's 17-3 thrashing of the Pirates. Jon Jay will slide to left field in his stead, opening up a spot for Albert Almora to start in center field.
Aug 30 2017Schwarber went 2-for-6 with a pair of homer and four RBI in Wednesday's 17-3 rout of the Pirates. He also struck out three times, so this was just another typical day at the ballpark for Schwarber, who now has 24 homers to go with 130 strikeouts in 107 games. The catcher-turned-outfielder's average is still lingering under the Mendoza Line at .199, as Schwarber's been unable to get over his trouble with getting hits when the ball doesn't leave the yard.
Aug 28 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates.Schwarber is 0-for-8 with four strikeouts over his last two games, so he'll get the day off to clear his head after starting eight straight contests in left field for the Cubs. In his place, Ian Happ will start in the outfield, batting fifth.
Aug 25 2017Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a solo homer Friday against the Phillies.Schwarber crushed his 22nd homer to give the Cubs a first-inning lead in a road loss. He's left the yard three times in his last seven games while also hitting over .250 this month, and he could be in line for a strong stretch run.
Aug 24 2017Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer against the Reds on Wednesday. If you pick and choose your sample, Schwarber's looking a lot better lately -- he's hitting .321/.441/.571 with "only" eight strikeouts over his last eight games. Of course, he struck out a combined seven times in the two games preceding this stretch, and he's still hitting just .202 on the year, albeit with 21 homers. Thus Schwarber remains an intensely promising yet frustratingly raw hitter who's still looking to put it all together in the big leagues after losing an entire year of development time to a knee injury in 2016.
Aug 18 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup against the Blue Jays on Friday.Schwarber will get the day off against left-hander J.A. Happ after starting seven of the past eight games. In his place, Ben Zobrist draws the assignment in left while Ian Happ mans the keystone.
Aug 17 2017Schwarber went 3-for-5 with a solo home run during Thursday's loss to Cincinnati. It's been a season of highs and lows for Schwarber, but even through all his struggles, he's still been able to provide fantasy owners with production in the homers column. Additionally, it's worth noting that he's now sporting a four-game hitting streak and has only struck out twice during that stretch. There are still shortcomings in Schwarber's approach at the dish, but there's also potential for him to catch fire and never look back.
Aug 17 2017Schwarber went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in Wednesday's win over the Reds. The two walks versus one strikeout were nice, and Schwarber now has a single hit in three straight games as well. He's still striking out a lot (44.4 percent K rate this month) and his season average is still a miserable .197, but Schwarber's ability to draw walks has allowed him to post a .422 on-base percentage in August. Schwarber is looking more and more like the definition of a three-true-outcomes player.
Aug 16 2017Schwarber moves up to second in the batting order for Wednesday's game against Cincinnati.Wednesday will mark the first time since June 10 that Schwarber is hitting this high in the order, as he's been shuffling between the 5-to-7 spots for the past week. Since July 28, Schwarber has gone just 9-for-40 (.225 average) from the plate with 24 strikeouts, and hasn't recorded a multi-hit game during that span. It appears as though manager Joe Maddon is trying to rejuvenate the 24-year-old before the home stretch of the 2017 season.
Aug 15 2017Schwarber is out of Tuesday's lineup against the Reds. This is a rare day off for Schwarber against a righty (Luis Castillo). The Cubs will go with more of a defensive-minded group (Jon Jay, Albert Almora, Jason Heyward) in the outfield to support contact-heavy starter Kyle Hendricks. Schwarber is hitting .247/.350/.551 with seven home runs in 30 games since being promoted from Triple-A.
Aug 12 2017Schwarber went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Friday's win over the Diamondbacks. He's still hitting just .195, but that's now 19 home runs for Schwarber. The youngster clearly has power, and he's adept at drawing walks (13.4% BB rate), but his 30.1% K rate is holding him back from hitting for a better average.
Aug 8 2017Schwarber is out of Tuesday's lineup in San Francisco.Jon Jay will start in left field and lead off in his stead, which is not surprising, considering lefty Ty Blach is taking the hill for the Giants. Schwarber is hitting .260/.349/.589 with six home runs and a 36.1 percent strikeout rate since returning from Triple-A on July 6.
Aug 7 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.Despite collecting hits in five of his last six contests, Schwarber will head to the bench as the Giants deploy left-handed starter Matt Moore. Jon Jay will man left field in his stead.
Aug 6 2017Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a walk in Sunday's 9-4 loss to the Nationals.Schwarber atoned for a third-inning error by launching his 18th long ball immediately following a Wilson Contreras homer in the sixth. His batting average is still a putrid .198, but Schwarber's 13.4 percent walk rate and 33 extra-base hits in 295 at-bats have pushed his OBP and slugging percentage up to .308 and .431, respectively.
Aug 5 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Saturday against the Nationals.Schwarber receives a day off after starting the past three games, picking up a hit in each contest to improve his season-long slash line of .192/.307/.423. In his place, Willson Contreras draws the start in left while Alex Avila sets up behind the plate.
Aug 1 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.Schwarzer will head to the bench for a night off to avoid the lefty-on-lefty matchup with Arizona starter Patrick Corbin. Ian Happ will man left field in his stead.
Jul 30 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.Schwarber is coming off a poor showing during Saturday's game against the Brewers in which he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He'll catch a breather with Jon Jay taking over in left field and batting second.
Jul 28 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Friday's series opener with the Brewers.Southpaw Brent Suter is on the mound for Milwaukee, leading manager Joe Maddon to go with Jon Jay in left field. Schwarber is hitting .364 with three home runs over the past week, so expect him back in the starting nine for Saturday's game.
Jul 27 2017Schwarber went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a triple and four RBI during Thursday's win over the White Sox.Schwarber now has five homers through 50 at-bats since returning from his demotion to the minors. He's receiving semi-regular starts and should see an uptick in playing time if he continues to flash his tremendous power. In the majority of settings where Schwarber is only eligible as an outfielder, he still has some work to do to be considered a reliable asset.
Jul 25 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Tuesday against the White Sox.Since he was promoted from Triple-A Iowa earlier this month, the lefty-hitting Schwarber has mainly been deployed as a platoon player in the outfield, and that trend will continue Tuesday, as he'll head to the bench with southpaw Carlos Rodon on the mound. Schwarber's absence will open up a spot in the lineup for Albert Almora, who gets the starting nod in center field while Ian Happ shifts over to left.
Jul 24 2017Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Cardinals.Since returning to the majors earlier this month after a brief demotion to Triple-A, Schwarber is slashing .237/.326/.553. Those numbers are all improvements on his season-long stats, and while Schwarber may never hit for a high average, his power potential warrants attention in most fantasy leagues. Plus, he batted fifth Sunday, and he should get plenty of RBI opportunities if he stays in the middle of Chicago's order.
Jul 18 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Braves. With lefty Sean Newcomb taking the hill for Atlanta, Schwarber will head to the bench for a night off. Ben Zobrist will slide into left field to replace him while Javier Baez notches another start at second base.
Jul 15 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Orioles.Schwarber will give way to Ian Happ in left field with a southpaw in Wade Miley taking the hill for Baltimore. With hits in four straight games (including two home runs during that span), Schwarber has looked better since his return from the minor leagues, but he figures to continue sitting against left-handed pitching.
Jul 14 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Friday against the Orioles.Schwarber smashed his 14th round-tripper of the season to help lead the Cubs to an offensive explosion against Kevin Gausman and the Orioles. He's now hit safely in his last four contests while leaving the yard in two of them, and although his overall numbers are horrendous, he's looking as if he could be a very useful fantasy option during the second half of the season.
Jul 8 2017Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's loss to the Pirates.Schwarber followed Ian Happ's solo shot with one of his own against Ivan Nova in the third, marking his 13th home run of the season and first since returning from Triple-A Iowa. It's just a four-game sample, but the early returns on Schwarber's reset in the minor leagues (3-for-13, two extra-base hits, 3:4 BB:K) look promising.
Jul 8 2017Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk in Friday's win over the Pirates.Schwarber went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Thursday after getting called back up to the majors, so Friday was a step in the right direction. As important as the hit and the walk was the fact that he didn't strike out. Schwarber's strikeout rate is at 28.6 percent, but if he can lower that figure, he may be more successful at the MLB level this time around.
Jul 6 2017Schwarber went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Thursday's loss to the Brewers.Although he crushed minor-league pitching, his return to the big leagues was pretty bad. The strikeouts continue to haunt Schwarber, as his strikeout rate now lies north of 30 percent. He also committed an error in left field, so unless he can show he deserves a regular role in the lineup, he could get relegated to a bench role.
Jul 6 2017Schwarber is in the lineup for Thursday's contest with Milwaukee.Schwarber rejoins the Cubs following 11 games with Triple-A Iowa, and will get to play in his first game back in the big leagues. The 24-year-old is batting fifth in the order while manning left field for the afternoon game. Schwarber was able to find his form at the plate in Iowa, but now it remains to be seen if he can mimic those results with Chicago.
Jul 6 2017Schwarber will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.Manager Joe Maddon stated earlier in the week that Schwarber wouldn't be recalled until at least Thursday, but little did fantasy owners know that would end up the exact day of his return. He's certainly earned the promotion, producing a 1.192 OPS with four long balls in 11 games since getting sent down back on June 22. On a now-crowded Cubs roster, John Lackey (plantar faciitis) will head to the DL in a corresponding move.
Jun 22 2017Schwarber is heading to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday to clear his head, David Kaplan of CSN Chicago reports. The stay isn't supposed to last long, but the Cubs are hoping that Schwarber will be able to figure things out in Iowa before rejoining the big-league club. It has been a struggle this entire season for the 24-year-old, as he's batting just .171/.295/.378 with 36 walks and 75 strikeouts. Schwarber has demonstrated his power, smacking 12 home runs and plating 28 RBI, but has not been able to find his groove from 2015 or last season's World Series. Manager Joe Maddon has tried moving Schwarber around in the order, but this move will allow him to get more reps with less pressure and hopefully provide an opportunity for improvement before coming back to the majors.
Jun 21 2017Schwarber (ankle) is back in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Schwarber fouled a ball off his ankle Monday, but X-rays were negative and he'll end up missing just one start. While Schwarber is batting .209 so far in June, he's slugging .558 this month and he continues to walk at a good clip. He is set to make his third career start in the three-hole Wednesday against right-hander Miguel Diaz.
Jun 20 2017Schwarber (ankle) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Padres.Schwarber fouled a ball off his ankle in Monday's contest, and although X-rays came back negative, the injury is still apparently bothersome enough to keep him sidelined. Consider him day-to-day; Willson Contreras is starting in left field for him while Miguel Montero is starting behind the plate.
Jun 19 2017Schwarber left Monday's game against San Diego after fouling a ball off his ankle, but X-rays were negative, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports. The full extent of the injury is still unknown, but it looks like Schwarber has escaped the worst case. Consider him day-to-day.
Jun 18 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.Despite the shifts in his spot in the batting order and the ample days of rest, Schwarber has yet to find his footing at the plate this season. Hitless in his previous seven at-bats, he'll again head to the bench Sunday for the third time in the past seven games. Jon Jay will replace him in left field with Albert Almora Jr. taking over in center.
Jun 14 2017Schwarber went 2-for-4 with his 12th homer of the year -- a two-run shot -- in a loss to the Mets on Wednesday. That .178 batting average is brutal, but Schwarber's shown signs of life lately, going 8-for-30 (.267) with four homers in his last 11 games. That isn't exactly star material, no, but we'll take what positives we can get from Schwarber right now. He should see his stats balance out some, but it'd be nice to see him cut down his strikeout rate.
Jun 12 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup Monday against the Mets.Despite leaving the yard with a pinch hit homer in his only at-bat Sunday, Schwarber will retreat to the bench for the second straight game. Ben Zobrist will again draw the start in left field in his stead while Javy Baez takes over at second base.
Jun 11 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.Schwarber is hitless in his last three games following his monster three-hit performance Wednesday against the Marlins in which he slugged two doubles and a homer. Ben Zobrist will man left field while Javy Baez will take over at second base in Schwarber's absence.
Jun 10 2017Schwarber is leading off Saturday against the Rockies. After hitting out of the nine hole in his last six contests, Schwarber moves back to his Opening Day slot. He is hitting .135 with a 38.3 percent strikeout rate over his last 52 at-bats, so it's not a lineup spot he has earned of late. Schwarber has the platoon advantage against righty Jeff Hoffman.
Jun 6 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins. With southpaw Jeff Locke taking the mound for Miami, the struggling Schwarber will get a night off. At face value, it's surprising to see that Jon Jay (a left-handed hitter) is moving into the starting lineup to replace him in left field, although Jay has actually hit better against lefties over the past two years, while Schwarber is historically worse against them. This could become a trend moving forward if Schwarber is unable to pick things up at the plate.
Jun 5 2017Schwarber is just 3-for-38 over his last 13 games (.079 average) although all three hits have been home runs.Schwarber has been about as boom or bust as can be the past two weeks, though the bust is outweighing the boom. He's struck out 18 times during that time and seen his season average dip to a lowly .165. The ball often goes a long way when Schwarber makes contact, but he's just not doing that very often. He still sports a strong 14 percent walk rate, and if Schwarber cuts down on the whiffs a bit and gets his .193 BABIP to rise, he could break out of this funk. For the moment, however, he's a hard player to trust in most fantasy formats and might be best used as a bench player until he shows signs of turning things around.
Jun 3 2017Schwarber is hitting ninth and starting in left field Saturday against the Cardinals. This is rock bottom for Schwarber and his owners, as he was seen by many as a surefire bet to hit somewhere in the top five spots of a potent Cubs lineup all season long. Not only has that lineup lacked firepower, but Schwarber has been a major reason why, hitting .163/.284/.337 on the season and .059/.158/.235 over his last 34 at-bats.
Jun 3 2017Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a grand slam Saturday against the Cardinals.Schwarber's two-out grand slam was his ninth blast of the year and brought the Cubs back from a 5-1 deficit to help them pick up a home victory. This was just the third game he's hit safely over his last 12 contests, and unless he starts to go on a hot streak, he cannot be trusted in fantasy lineups right now.
Jun 2 2017Schwarber is batting seventh and playing left field Friday against the Cardinals. This marks the outfielder's lowest point in the order during any of his 2017 starts. He had been batting first or, recently, second, but Ian Happ is leading off Friday, followed by Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Ben Zobrist. Schwarber has tested his fantasy owners' patience with a .165/.286/.341 line over 206 plate appearances. At least he has eight home runs to go with that, and perhaps the demotion in the lineup could lead to him seeing the ball better. We'll keep beating the buy-low drum if it can be done at an appropriately low-risk price.
May 31 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Padres.Schwarber's blast provided half of Chicago's offense in this one. The young slugger shifted to the No. 2 spot in the lineup on May 20, but his struggles at the plate have persisted. In the last eight games, he's batting just 3-for-24 (.125), although two of his hits left the yard. Schwarber offers immense power potential, but his .174 average this season is not going to get it done.
May 28 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers.Schwarber's absence comes at little surprise, as the Cubs are scheduled to square off against Clayton Kershaw -- a difficult matchup for any batter, let alone a lefty. With Schwarber out of the mix, Ian Happ will get the nod in left field, while Albert Almora Jr. gets the call in center.
May 26 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Dodgers. With Alex Wood and Clayton Kershaw due up for Los Angeles in Games 1 and 3 of the series, respectively, the 24-year-old Schwarber appears likely to make just one start this weekend. Schwarber is just 5-for-34 against lefties this season and has been riding the pine against most opposing southpaws of late. His performance against right-handers has been lacking as well, but Schwarber does have a top-35 hard-hit rate among qualifiers over the past 30 days.
May 24 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Giants.Schwarber delivered a tape-measure homer in Tuesday's win, but it looks like he'll need to put together several strong performances in a row before reestablishing himself as an every day option against both right- and left-handed pitching. With the recent call up of top prospect Ian Happ and the return of Jason Heyward from the disabled list, Schwarber seems in line to assume the larger half of a platoon in left field.
May 23 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a home run in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Giants.Schwarber set the tone in the bottom of the first inning with a tape measure shot off Johnny Cueto to give the Cubs a lead they would not relinquish. The Cubs left fielder has not gotten off to a good start this season, hitting just .186 in 152 at-bats, but he has now homered in two of his last five starts, so maybe he's getting things turned around. Despite his low batting average, Schwarber's excellent walk rate - his .137 walks per plate appearance ranks 13th in the National League - should allow him to be productive in the powerful Cubs lineup.
May 22 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup Monday against the Giants.Schwarber is batting just .161 against left-handers this season, so he'll head to the bench for a night off with southpaw Ty Blach taking the hill for San Francisco. Ben Zobrist will move into left fielder to fill the hole there.
May 22 2017Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI in Sunday's win over the Brewers.Schwarber was shifted to No. 2 in the lineup for Saturday's game, but it was postponed due to weather. On Sunday, Schwarber was back in there batting second, and it looks like the change could stick, especially if the Cubs keep putting up crooked numbers (13 runs on Sunday). That will mean Ben Zobrist leading off most days.
May 20 2017Schwarber is hitting second and starting in left field Saturday against the Brewers. This is his first start in the two hole this season, with 142 of his 148 at-bats coming in the leadoff spot. The Cubs are clearly looking for a way to get their young slugger going at the plate, and perhaps he will be more effective hitting behind Ben Zobrist and in front of Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. He is hitting .182/.305/.351 with six home runs in 174 plate appearances. His .226 BABIP is largely responsible for the low batting average, but it is worth pointing out that his 20.2 percent soft hit rate is notably higher than the 15.4 percent soft hit rate he posted in 2015.
May 19 2017Schwarber is leading off and playing left field Friday against the Brewers. After a Thursday breather, Schwarber returns to face Milwaukee call-up Paolo Espino. The platoon advantage could help Schwarber, who's 3-for-10 with a home run and three RBI in his last two games. He's struggling overall with a .188/.312/.361 line, though at least it's accompanied by six home runs.
May 18 2017Schwarber is not in the Cubs' Thursday lineup against the Reds.He was 0-for-14 heading into Wednesday's game, during which he went 2-for-5 and launched a home run. Schwarber will receive a breather against Reds southpaw Amir Garrett to let that good performance marinate and figure out how he can sustain it to correct his .188/.312/.361 line over 170 plate appearances. At least he has six home runs to go with it. Surging call-up Ian Happ will take his place in left field Thursday.
May 16 2017Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-5 win over the Reds.Schwarber's bomb off of Bronson Arroyo traveled 462 feet deep into the right field stands. His struggles at the plate this season have been well-documented (he was 0 for his last 14 heading into this contest), but his prodigious power has kept him relevant from a fantasy perspective. The 24-year-old should continue to get chances to produce from the top of the Chicago order, even with the holes that are being exposed in his swing.
May 11 2017Despite hitting just .195, Schwarber is expected to remain the Cubs' leadoff hitter, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he doesn't attribute Schwarber's struggles to leading off, and added that bumping him down a few spots wouldn't do anything to address the issue. Schwarber does have a solid 14.4 percent walk rate, and his .253 BABIP indicates a bit of bad luck, but the 29.5 percent strikeout rate is not helping matters. Remember, Schwarber hit just .246 in 232 at-bats during his 2015 rookie season, but he did manage 16 home runs and a .842 OPS. His average may never be a huge asset.
May 10 2017Schwarber is starting in left field and hitting third Wednesday against the Rockies. It will be the first time this season Schwarber hits in the No. 3 hole, mainly as a result of Anthony Rizzo getting the day off. The 24-year-old has struggled to keep his batting average above .200 this year, but has contributed five home runs and 14 RBI while working as the everyday left fielder. Jon Jay takes over the leadoff spot.
May 9 2017Schwarber is out of the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Ben Zobrist will take over for Schwarber in left field with lefty Kyle Freeland due up in the nightcap. Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI in Game 1, bringing his average to an even .200 through 31 games this season. Manager Joe Maddon has not given any indication that he is thinking about removing Schwarber from the leadoff spot.
May 6 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup Saturday against the Yankees.Despite knocking a solo homer Friday night, Schwarber will head to the bench as Jon Jay slides over to left field. The Cubs are choosing to go with a predominantly righty-swinging lineup against southpaw Jordan Montgomery.
May 5 2017Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a solo homer in Friday's loss the Yankees.Schwarber crushed his fifth blast of the year off Michael Pineda to give the Cubs a two-run lead in the sixth inning of a game they'd end up losing. Despite leaving the yard twice in his last four games, he's collected just five hits over his last 10 games, and he's hitting below .200 on the year. Of course, a hot streak could be on the horizon at any time, and he should be back to being a solid fantasy contributor.
May 5 2017Schwarber is back in the lineup for the Cubs on Friday against the Yankees, leading off and playing left field. The masher was one of four Cubbies to whom Joe Maddon gave a day off in their Thursday matinee. Schwarber will duel with the Yankees' Michael Pineda during Friday afternoon.
May 4 2017Schwarber is not in the Cubs' Thursday lineup. The outfielder has been in a bit of a rut lately but clubbed a three-run home run Tuesday. Schwarber will receive a breather during the day game and probably will be back to starting Friday as the club starts a home series with the Yankees. Jon Jay is taking his spot in left field Thursday.
May 3 2017Schwarber went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Phillies. The home run is the fourth of the season for Schwarber. His Tuesday stat line underscored his season, as he's batting just .196 but four of his 20 hits have left the yard. The power is nice, but he's not getting on base much for a leadoff hitter. It's possible manager Joe Maddon mixes things up at some point.
Apr 28 2017Schwarber is leading off as the designated hitter for Friday's game against Boston. The Cubs enter an American League ballpark for the first time since the 2016 World Series, where Schwarber went 7-for-16 with two RBI and a .971 OPS as the DH. Expect the young slugger to continue to fill the role throughout the weekend series, as Ben Zobrist moves to left field in his stead.
Apr 19 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's win over the Brewers. It was also encouraging that Schwarber didn't strike out, as he had fanned three times in two of his previous three games. Schwarber is batting just .241 on the season, but he still has a solid .379 on-base percentage and .842 OPS. The 24-year-old should continue to lead off for the Cubs.
Apr 19 2017Schwarber is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.Jon Jay will shift over to left field and Matt Szczur will lead off as Schwarber sits for the first time all season. Schwarber has already struck out 22 times in 54 at-bats this season, but he's also walked 11 times and hit three home runs (one off a lefty). The 24-year-old appears primed to continue playing close to every day for the Cubs.
Apr 15 2017Schwarber went 1-for-5 and struck out three times in Saturday's loss to the Pirates.Schwarber is in a bit of a funk, as he's 3-for-15 over his last four games with nine strikeouts. He's still got a solid .365 on-base percentage, and he should start making better contact at the plate soon.
Apr 11 2017Schwarber went 0-for-1 in Monday's win over the Dodgers, but he reached base three times via walk.Schwarber isn't considered a prototypical leadoff hitter due to his power and lack of speed, but a patient eye at the plate is exactly what a manager wants to see from the spot. So far this season, Schwarber has a solid 17.6 percent walk rate and .382 on-base percentage. The Cubs will gladly take that kind of production.
Apr 9 2017Schwarber went 2-for-5 with his second home run of the season in Sunday's win over the Brewers. The blast came leading off the second inning against Milwaukee starter Zach Davies. Schwarber looks locked in as the Cubs' leadoff hitter, and with a good spot in a dangerous lineup, he should have plenty more productive days this season.
Apr 7 2017Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a walk and a game-winning three-run home run in Thursday's 6-4 win over the Cardinals. The blast was his first of the season, and just the third of Schwarber's career off a left-handed pitcher as he crushed a Brett Cecil offering 404 feet in the seventh inning to put the Cubs in the lead for good. The 24-year-old came into the game hitting just .143 (8-for-56) in his career against same-side pitching, but if Schwarber makes significant progress in that aspect of his game he could be poised for a huge campaign.
Apr 3 2017Batting leadoff, Schwarber went 2-for-3 in Sunday's Opening Day loss to the Cardinals.Schwarber batted leadoff just twice in his career before Sunday night, but he's expected to occupy that spot most days in 2017. This limits his RBI potential a bit, but Schwarber should get a lot of pitches to hit in front of Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, and he should score plenty of runs, too.
Mar 31 2017Schwarber said he felt good after catching in Thursday's spring training game against the Astros, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Schwarber caught in a minor league game earlier this spring, but Thursday was his first MLB action at catcher since tearing his ACL and MCL in the second game of last season. "Yesterday was that last mental hurdle to know I can (catch) in the big leagues," Schwarber said. He'll serve as an emergency option behind Willson Contreras and Miguel Montero this year. Schwarber's fantasy value goes up, of course, if he's able to reach catcher eligibility in your league.
Mar 25 2017Schwarber played four innings behind the plate in a minor league game Friday, his first time at catcher this spring, William Boor of MLB.com reports.Schwarber will primarily play left field this season, but he came up as a catcher and the Cubs plan on using him as an emergency option behind Willson Contreras and Miguel Montero. Schwarber blocked a few balls in the game and said his body felt good afterward. "I love catching," Schwarber said. "It's what I was whenever I played baseball. I was always a catcher. For me to be able to do that today and feel pretty good about myself walking away from the day, it was a good step."
Mar 19 2017Schwarber has been getting some playing time in right field this spring in an effort to get him ready for starts there during the season, MLB.com reports.Specifically, Schwarber could play right field when the Cubs visit PNC Park in Pittsburgh, where right field is a bit smaller than left. This will reduce the amount of ground Schwarber has to cover in his return from two torn ligaments in his left knee. However, Schwarber will likely spend most of his time in left, with Jason Heyward patrolling right field.
Mar 18 2017Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI in Friday's spring training win over the White Sox.The home run was a two-run shot in the third inning against Derek Holland. Schwarber is now slashing .276/.364/.621 this spring. He's been named the leadoff hitter for the Cubs, which will put him in front of Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo in the lineup. As a result, Schwarber should see plenty of pitches to hit and score a bunch of runs, provided he stays healthy.
Feb 24 2017Schwarber will bat leadoff for the Cubs this season, Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago reports. He had been the frontrunner for the spot this offseason, but it was finally confirmed Friday. The strategy for manager Joe Maddon here is to bat Kris Bryant second and Anthony Rizzo third, thus forcing pitchers to face a deadly trio. It's unclear who will take over on Schwarber's off days, but Ben Zobrist, Albert Almora, and Addison Russell have been mentioned as options. Schwarber, meanwhile, will have an immediate chance to contribute after missing nearly the entire 2016 season with a torn ACL and MCL.
Feb 23 2017Schwarber is the early favorite to bat leadoff for the Cubs in 2017, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports. The 23-year-old missed nearly all of 2016 with a torn ACL and MCL, however, he made a miraculous comeback in the playoffs for the World Series champs, slashing .412/.500/.471 in 20 plate appearances during the postseason. Although it was a small sample size, manager Joe Maddon is apparently sold on his ability to get on base and will give him the chance to lead off next season. When Schwarber is resting, Ben Zobrist will likely step in to bat leadoff.
Feb 18 2017Schwarber caught a bullpen session from John Lackey on Friday, MLB.com reports.Schwarber had his left leg extended while in the squat to avoid putting extra stress on the knee, so he's clearly easing back into the position. Still, this is a good sign for Schwarber, who is expected to serve as the team's third catcher this season. Look for him to do more work behind the plate during spring training, but Schwarber's primary position this year will be left field.
Feb 15 2017Schwarber was cleared by doctors Wednesday to take part in catching drills and is expected to serve as the team's third backstop in 2017, Bruce Levine of 670 AM The Score reports.Schwarber, who missed nearly all of 2016 while recovering from a torn ACL and MCL in the Cubs' second game of the season, is still projected to see the bulk of his starts in left field this season while Willson Contreras and Miguel Montero handle most of the duties at catcher, but it sounds like Schwarber will be more than just an emergency option behind the plate. The 23-year-old lost catcher eligibility in most leagues last season after his lone two starts came in the outfield, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could reach 20 starts at catcher by the end of 2017, though it may take an injury to Contreras or Montero for that to materialize. At this time, the potential of Schwarber regaining catcher eligibility is something that would likely raise his stock more in keeper leagues rather than single-season formats, where he'll presumably be an outfield-only option for the bulk of the campaign. Regardless of where he sees time this season, Schwarber's power is the main driver of his fantasy value, and if health prevails, he could surpass the 30-homer plateau while delivering ample returns in RBI and runs.
Feb 14 2017Schwarber will wear a brace on his surgically repaired left knee all season, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Schwarber also said he'd like to catch some for the Cubs, but how much he does remains to be seen. Following his World Series heroics, Schwarber is primed to be a key contributor in the Cubs lineup, no matter where he bats or what position he plays.
Feb 3 2017Schwarber said he'd like to report with pitchers and catchers to spring training and catch some bullpen sessions, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.Schwarber caught 21 games after getting called up in 2015, but he also played a lot of outfield in his rookie year. Last year, of course, Schwarber missed virtually the entire season due to a torn ACL and MCL, and that makes his outlook at catcher even murkier. Schwarber and the Cubs still need to discuss a plan for the 23-year-old this spring, but coming off of a serious knee injury, Schwarber will probably get most of his run in the outfield.
Dec 15 2016Schwarber is one of the names being thrown around to fill the vacancy atop the Cubs batting order in 2017, Phil Rogers of MLB.com reports. He definitely doesn't look like a prototypical leadoff hitter, but the 23-year-old has an excellent eye at the plate (13.2 percent walk rate in 2015) and possesses a .353 OBP in his young career. Schwarber also rates highly as a baserunner and has the instincts and aggressiveness to succeed in the pole position. However, even with the increase in runs that would likely come atop an order featuring Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, Schwarber's RBI total would likely decrease in such a role, which could be a bit of a waste given his immense power. It's still unclear how things will play out, especially since both Jon Jay and Ben Zobrist have experience at the top of the order, but Schwarber's numbers could depend on where manager Joe Maddon decides to place him in the lineup on a day-to-day basis.
Oct 27 2016Schwarber has not been medically cleared to play in the field yet and will only be used as a pinch hitter during the World Series games in Chicago, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. There were thoughts that Schwarber could slot into the lineup as the Cubs' left fielder in an effort to keep his bat in the lineup, but doctors advised them that quick movements and cuts could be detrimental to the slugger's recovery. He could still come off the bench to hit at some point during the games at Wrigley Field, but the 23-year-old will have to wait to be in the starting lineup until he can DH in a potential Game 6 in Cleveland.
Oct 26 2016Manager Joe Maddon indicated after Game 2 that Schwarber's availability for left field in Game 3 will be determined by team doctor's, but didn't rule it out as a possibility, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports.Schwarber has served as the team's designated hitter during the first two games of the series, but hat position is eliminated as the series shifts back to Chicago. It's unclear how the Cubs would make room for him in the lineup, but it could result in Jason Heyward returning to the bench. More on his status should be determined closer to the contest.
Oct 25 2016Schwarber is batting fifth and acting as the designated hitter for the Cubs in their matchup with the Indians in Game 1 of the World Series. As expected, Schwarber will slot right back into the lineup upon his activation, appearing to be primed for a lot of RBI opportunities in the middle of Chicago's order. He'll be hitting against right-hander Corey Kluber, which could prove to be a decent matchup for the 23-year-old given his .953 OPS against righties in 2015.
Oct 25 2016Schwarber (knee) has officially been named to the Cubs' World Series roster, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.Rumors began circulating Monday afternoon suggesting Schwarber could return for the World Series, and that will indeed be the case, as he's joined the team in Cleveland in advance of Tuesday night's Game 1. The power-hitting 23-year-old, who tore both his ACL and LCL during the Cubs' third game of the regular season, is expected to serve as the designated hitter in Game 1 after playing in a pair of Arizona Fall League games over the past few days. In Monday's game, Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run.
Oct 24 2016Schwarber (knee) is expected to serve as the Cubs' designated hitter for Game 1 of the World Series against the Indians, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.Schwarber participated in an Arizona Fall League game Monday, going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run. This was apparently enough for the Cubs to pull the trigger and bring him to Cleveland for the series, although no official confirmation has come forth. Things should become completely clear once the lineup for Tuesday's opener is revealed, but things are looking good for the 23-year-old.
Oct 24 2016Schwarber (knee) is expected to join the Cubs in Cleveland on Tuesday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. It's still unclear if Schwarber will be added to the Cubs' World Series roster, but he will serve as the designated hitter Monday in an Arizona Fall League game and was activated from the disabled list over the weekend, so the door remains open. If Schwarber is indeed added to the roster he would likely be limited to pinch-hit and DH duty given that he is just over six months removed from suffering a serious knee injury, but he would be a key addition with the Cubs set to face an Indians squad that is short on left-handed pitching.
Oct 22 2016Schwarber (knee) was activated from the 60-day DL on Saturday. This move will allow Schwarber to play in the Arizona Fall League, starting Saturday as a member of Mesa's taxi squad. Schwarber was cleared to play, albeit with a brace on his knee, following his six-month checkup in Dallas on Monday. Manager Joe Maddon acknowledged that "there's a chance" Schwarber could be used as the DH in Cleveland if the Cubs advance to the World Series.
Oct 22 2016Schwarber (knee) is headed to the Arizona Fall League, the Chicago Tribune reports. The 23-year-old will reportedly be in the lineup for the Mesa Solar Sox on Saturday, marking his return to game action after more than six months on the shelf due to a serious knee injury. Schwarber suffered a fully torn ACL and LCL in an outfield collision with Dexter Fowler in the Cubs' third game of the season. He will lose catcher eligibility in most formats in 2017, but Schwarber's bat should keep him highly relevant in mixed leagues.
Jun 18 2016Schwarber (knee) will not return this year, even for the postseason, Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald reports. No one expected Schwarber back this year, but team president Theo Epstein still reiterated it Friday. His next checkup will be in August, and he should be ready to go by next spring.
Jun 2 2016Schwarber (knee) is making progress in his rehab, MLB.com reports.Schwarber tore both the LCL and ACL in his left knee in the third game of the season, and he visited doctors Wednesday for the first time since undergoing surgery. "The reports are really good, and he's progressing nicely," GM Jed Hoyer said. "He's gone from two crutches to one crutch. Hopefully, some of his celebrations in the dugout will be less awkward." While Schwarber's progress is encouraging, the 23-year-old will not return in 2016.
Apr 19 2016Schwarber successfully underwent knee surgery to reconstruct his ACL and repair his LCL Tuesday and is expected to make a full recovery, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Schwarber went to Dr. Daniel Cooper (the Dallas Cowboys team doctor) for the surgery, and it appears that the operation was a success. He's expected to fully recover and should be on track for a return in the early part of 2017.
Apr 18 2016Schwarber is slated for surgery on his torn ACL and MCL this week, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports. The Cubs lost one of the premier mashers in baseball following Schwarber's outfield collision with Dexter Fowler during the season's first week. Once the severity of the knee injury was known, Schwarber's fate was sealed, at least for the 2016 campaign, but a timetable for his recovery could be revealed after his surgeon completes the procedure.
Apr 11 2016Schwarber (knee) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Monday.Monday's move was primarily procedural, as Schwarber has already been ruled out for the season. It does open up a spot on the 40-man roster, however, for new acquisition Giovanni Soto.
Apr 8 2016Schwarber (knee) was placed on the 15-day DL on Friday. The Cubs recalled infielder Munenori Kawasaki in a corresponding roster move. Schwarber will miss the entire season after suffering a torn ACL and LCL in addition to an ankle sprain in an outfield collision Thursday. Because he did not play at catcher before suffering the injury, he will likely lose catcher eligibility in many formats next year.
Apr 8 2016Schwarber (knee) did not play at catcher before his season-ending injury, so he's likely to lose his catcher eligibility in many leagues in 2017.Keeper-league owners of Schwarber are devastated enough by today's news, but he was expected to be behind the plate quite a bit in 2016, thus giving him a little extra value in 2017.
Apr 8 2016Schwarber has a fully torn ACL and LCL, in addition to a severe ankle sprain, and is out for the year, ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers reports. The worst-case scenario has been realized, and fantasy owners in single-season leagues can cut ties with Schwarber immediately and try to salvage some production at catcher off the waiver wire or via trade. Chicago will now turn to a combination of Jorge Soler, Matt Szczur and Ben Zobrist in left field, with Soler likely getting the bulk of the starts. Schwarber's work ethic is well-documented, so it is possible his rehab will be complete entering camp next year, but there probably won't be a firm timetable on that until after he undergoes surgery.
Apr 8 2016Though there is no update yet on the status of Schwarber's knee, he is definitely headed to the DL, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. The Cubs are reportedly concerned with Schwarber's knee, and this should put to rest any speculation that the injury will only sideline him for a couple of days. Expect Jorge Soler to get the biggest bump in playing time, though that doesn't mean he'll automatically be the primary left fielder in Schwarber's absence.
Apr 8 2016The Cubs are more concerned about Schwarber's knee than his ankle, following Thursday night's collision that led to him being carted off, ESPN's Buster Olney reports. There won't be an update on the results of his MRI until late Friday, according to ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers, but Olney's report certainly lines up with what the injury looked like in real time, and contradicts reports that surfaced Thursday night about it being an ankle sprain, and not a knee issue. If it is a serious knee injury, Schwarber's season could be over, so while it is premature to drop him, his owners would be wise to try to add a catcher off the waiver wire or via a trade, as it seems likely that Schwarber is at the very least headed for a DL stint.
Apr 7 2016Schwarber exited Thursday's game in the second inning on a cart with what appears to be a left leg injury, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. The power-hitting catcher-turned-outfielder reportedly collided with teammate Dexter Fowler in the outfield and left the game in considerable pain. A long-term injury would be a big blow for fantasy owners, and could lead to Jorge Soler taking over everyday duties in left field. There's nothing to suggest that's the case at this point, but the situation is certainly worth monitoring over the next few days.
Apr 7 2016Schwarber is now being evaluated for a possible sprained ankle after X-rays Thursday returned negative, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday. This is certainly good news considering he required a cart to leave the field. Sprains can definitely cost some time as well, and there's no guarantee that something won't come up on the MRI, but the fact that he's avoided a broken ankle bodes well. Expect further news on the situation when the results come back Friday.
Apr 7 2016Schwarber will start at catcher Friday with Jason Hammel on the mound against the Diamondbacks, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. There are two pieces of good news in this for Schwarber and his fantasy owners. The first is that Schwarber is getting at-bats against a left-handed starter in Arizona's Robbie Ray, which could mean the Cubs might not be as platoon-sensitive with him as they were last season down the stretch. Number two is starting at catcher with Hammel pitching is in line with a spring training report that Schwarber would act as the right-hander's personal catcher. Getting a start behind the plate every fifth day would easily sustain the 23-year-old's catcher eligibility.
Apr 5 2016Schwarber is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Angels.Schwarber received the start in left field on Opening Day, but he'll take a seat on the bench with left-hander Andrew Heaney on the bump for the Angels on Tuesday. Matt Szczur will play left field and bat eighth in his place.
Mar 31 2016Schwarber was atop the Cubs' lineup Wednesday and went 1-for-4 with his second home run of the spring. He won't normally lead off, as there are no shortage of candidates on the roster for that role. Schwarber is hitting .277/.340/.489 this spring.
Mar 24 2016Schwarber went 2-for-4 and stole his second base of the spring Wednesday against the Rangers. No one expects Schwarber to suddenly become a speedster, but even a handful of steals from a catcher-eligible hitter is noteworthy in the fantasy world.
Mar 18 2016Schwarber may be used as Jason Hammel's personal catcher, the Cubs' official site reports. This could end up helping Schwarber in a number of ways, most obviously keeping his bat in the lineup. Working with the same pitcher will probably also help ease his comfort behind the plate. It will also ensure that he stays eligible at catcher in 2017 fantasy drafts.
Mar 13 2016Schwarber (knee) is back in the Cubs' lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Schwarber's knee issue was considered minor, but you can't blame the Cubs for being cautious with their young slugger. Assuming nothing happens between now and the end of Sunday's game, Schwarber should be considered 100 percent going forward.
Mar 12 2016Schwarber (knee) will likely play Sunday, per manager Joe Maddon, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports.Schwarber has been dealing with a minor knee issue for the past few days, but as expected it's nothing serious, and he'll likely be back on the field Sunday afternoon.
Mar 11 2016Schwarber (knee) hopes to get back in the lineup Saturday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. "You know me, if I can still play, I'm going to play," Schwarber said. "We'll give it a day rest and see what it brings tomorrow and if I can get in there tomorrow, I'll be in there."He came out of Thursday's game after two innings after tweaking his knee making a throw from left field to home. Schwarber, who has been working in the outfield and at catcher has no intentions of getting back into game action as a DH. His toughness and work ethic are admirable, but considering his value to the club, it may be more than just one day off for the young slugger. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Mar 11 2016Schwarber (knee) Will miss the next two days, and could play Sunday if everything checks out, 670 The Score's Bruce Levine reports. The young slugger wants to get back out there as soon as possible, and while the team will give him a couple days off to try to get him pain free, manager Joe Maddon said he was not concerned about Schwarber's knee long term. Look for him to be deployed either Sunday or early next week.
Mar 10 2016Schwarber (knee) could be held out for up to a week for precautionary reasons, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports.Schwarber left Thursday's exhibition game after feeling some soreness in his left knee and after being examined, the Cubs will take the cautious route and hold him out for a few days until the pain subsides. Fortunately, Schwarber himself downplayed the injury Thursday evening, saying, "I don't think it'll be significant," when he talked with reporters after the game. How Schwarber responds when he returns to the diamond will go a long way toward gauging how serious the young star's knee injury may be.
Mar 10 2016Schwarber left Thursday's spring game with left knee soreness, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. The severity of the injury is currently unknown, but that should become clear after the game concludes. If it does turn out to be a minor issue, it wouldn't be surprising for the Cubs to be very cautious with their young outfielder and keep him out a day or two to ensure that he heals completely.
Mar 9 2016Schwarber singled twice off Clayton Kershaw in Tuesday's exhibition game against the Dodgers.Given the glut of offensive players available to the Cubs, Schwarber is in danger of sitting against lefties, particularly tough ones like Kershaw, so Tuesday's performance is a positive sign.
Mar 7 2016Schwarber is 1-for-5 with a strikeout through two games this spring.Schwarber burst onto the scene with the Cubs in 2015 and will likely be part of a platoon in left field with Jorge Soler in 2016. This bodes well for Schwarber as he hit .278 with 14 home runs against righties, and just .143 with two home runs against lefties last season. The Ohio native will continue to get practice behind the plate and, if he proves to be adequate defensively, could be Kyle Hendricks' personal catcher throughout the season.
Mar 3 2016Schwarber will lead off and play left field in the Cubs' spring opener Thursday, the team's official site reports.Don't expect Schwarber to lead off too much this year, but the Cubs want him to get plenty of at-bats this spring.
Feb 28 2016There is talk of Schwarber working as a personal catcher for Kyle Hendricks in 2016, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Any news of Schwarber playing enough catcher to get eligibility there is good news, not to mention working as a personal catcher for at least one member of the rotation keeps the dream alive of the 22-year-old sticking at the position long-term. This is still an early spring training rumor, but it is certain the Cubs are going to have get creative with playing time for whoever is lined up to see the outfield in Wrigley.
Feb 26 2016Schwarber thinks of himself more as a catcher than as an outfielder, the Daily Herald reports. "I'm still a catcher," he said a few days before the Cubs signed Dexter Fowler and Shane Victorino.Schwarber's time in left field was an adventure in 2015, but no one doubts his bat. Given the plethora of outfielders on the roster, it would be in the Cubs' best interest for Schwarber to top the depth chart behind the plate - though Miguel Montero of course isn't a bad incumbent there. It's a nice problem for the team to have, but if Schwarber struggles at both positions in 2016, he may find himself on the bench - or even the minors - more often than originally expected.
Feb 26 2016Schwarber's playing time may take a hit in 2016 with the Cubs' decision to re-sign Dexter Fowler on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports.Jorge Soler will likely be squeezed more than Schwarber, who should start against righties either in left field, or behind the plate when Miguel Montero needs a day off. Fortunately for Schwarber owners (or prospective ones), the Cubs intend to let Schwarber pursue catching for at least another year, even though the bulk of his playing time is still likely to come in left field. The Cubs' depth should enable them to avoid exposing Schwarber to left-handed pitching if desired.
Oct 10 2015Schwarber is not in the lineup for Saturday's game, the Daily Herald's Bruce Miles reports. The Cubs are going with a righty-heavy lineup with St. Louis sending lefty Jaime Garcia to the mound for Game 2 of the NLDS. Schwarber will almost certainly be used at some point as a pinch-hitter off the bench. Jorge Soler and Austin Jackson will start in the outfield corners.
Oct 8 2015Schwarber went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI in the Cubs' win over the Pirates on Wednesday. He drove in Dexter Fowler in the top of the first inning for the run that stood as the game winner, but also provide insurance with a long ball that left the yard off Gerrit Cole in the third. The Cubs used Schwarber in right field for Wednesday's game, eventually removing him for a defensive replacement (Chris Denorfia) late in the game.
Oct 4 2015Schwarber is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.Schwarber has been moving around between the corner outfield positions and catcher in the last week, but he'll get a day off while Chris Denorfia takes over left field.
Sep 30 2015Schwarber went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored in a 4-1 victory over the Reds on Tuesday.Schwarber broke out of a 1-for-10 stretch by getting on base in all but one plate appearance Tuesday. Although he has struggled overall during September to the tune of a .203 average, Schwarber's four homers during the month are his second-highest monthly total of dingers this season. Schwarber is one of the key sources of offensive firepower for the Cubs heading into the postseason.
Sep 28 2015Schwarber isn't in the lineup Monday against the Royals.Schwarber will receive a day of Monday after a 0-for-2 effort at the dish in Sunday's game. It marks the second time in three games he will skip, but it's likely just to rest the youngster as the Cubs prepare for a postseason run.
Sep 26 2015Schwarber is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates. The Cubs have faced three left-handed starters in September and Schwarber has started against none of them, a trend which will continue Saturday against Francisco Liriano. Austin Jackson will get the start in left field, batting second.
Sep 19 2015Schwarber is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals. The left-handed Schwarber is hitting the bench with lefty-killer Michael Wacha on the mound for the Cardinals. Chris Denorfia will get the start in left field instead.
Sep 15 2015Schwarber is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Pirates. The 22-year-old will give way to Austin Jackson in left field after an 0-for-4, two-strikeout showing in Game 1. All three of Schwarber's hits since his Sept. 8 return from a rib injury have left the yard (3-for-21).
Sep 11 2015Schwarber had a monster game on Friday, going 2-for-4 with two homers, three RBI, three runs scored and a walk in a 7-3 win over the Phillies.Schwarber was struggling mightily coming into the game, going 13 for his last 80. The one positive was that seven of those 13 hits were for home runs. It's quite clear that Schwarber is all-in for home runs right now and ultimately that will hurt his batting average in the future. With the elite power he provides out of the catcher position, it's hard to be disappointed with a .267 average. His home run-to-fly ball rate is at a ridiculous rate right now and that alone has regression written all over it for the talented rookie.
Sep 10 2015Schwarber is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.Schwarber went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Wednesday, so manager Joe Maddon decided it was best to give Schwarber a day to clear his head. As long as he did not aggravate he rib injury that plagued him for the last week, chances are good that he will be in the lineup somewhere for the Cubs' next game Friday.
Sep 9 2015Schwarber went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in a 4-3 loss to the Cardinals on Wednesday.Schwarber was the talk of fantasy circles after a ridiculous stretch to start his season, but he's been struggling mightily as of late. Since August 9, Schwarber is 13-for-80 with seven homers. That alone shows you that he is all-in for power right now and for a player who was supposed to provide a nice average, an all-out swing will only hurt his value. The power is nice, but a .163 average will absolutely kill your peripherals.
Sep 9 2015Schwarber (ribs) will return to the lineup Wednesday against the Cardinals.Schwarber was originally expected to miss the entire series against the Cardinals, but he made a pinch hit appearance in Tuesday's contest, and was then reportedly on track to join the lineup Wednesday. That is indeed the case, as he'll bat second and play left field in his return.
Sep 8 2015Schwarber (ribs) is healthy enough to pinch-hit Tuesday and is on track to return to the lineup Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales reports. It appears that the wait is almost over after Schwarber was not in the lineup Tuesday for the sixth straight game. He should play almost every day after returning Wednesday as the Cubs jockey with the Pirates for the right to host the N.L. wild card game.
Sep 8 2015Schwarber (ribs) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals, according to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.Schwarber made progress with his rib injury Monday, but he is still not ready to return to action. He does not figure to be out much longer, but be sure to continuing tracking his status until he is back on the field.
Sep 7 2015Schwarber (rib) hit in the batting cage Monday, and could still return at some point during the Cardinals series, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports.Schwarber was expected to miss the entirety of the Cardinals series, but made some significant progress Monday by swinging in the cage. While it's no guarantee, it appears there's still hope that he will return at some point during the series.
Sep 5 2015Schwarber (ribs) will probably not play in the Cubs' series against the Cardinals next week, Daryl Van Schoewen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Schwarber hasn't seen a plate appearance since he felt pain in his ribs during warm-ups Wednesday, and he could be dealing with something serious if the team thinks it might have to sit him for more than a week. Chris Coghlan figures to get the majority of playing time in left field with Schwarber out, though he is sitting Saturday against a left-handed starter while Kris Bryant slides into that spot.
Sep 4 2015Schwarber (ribs) will not play until he is re-evaluated in 3-5 days, Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports.Schwarber was a late scratch Wednesday with rib soreness, and that ailment will apparently spill into next week. The Cubs probably aren't going to risk anything major with one of their best young bats, so it's reasonable to expect a conservative approach. With Schwarber out, Chris Coghlan figures to occupy his old post in left field, with a rotation of fill-ins at second base.
Sep 2 2015Schwarber was a late scratch from Wednesday's lineup with right rib soreness. It's unclear what exactly caused Schwarber's rib issue, but it will result in Chris Coghlan shifting over to play left field and bat second, while Austin Jackson will make his first start as a member of the Cubs, playing right field and batting sixth. The young catcher/outfielder will undergo a precautionary MRI, but the team hopes he'll return Friday following an off day Thursday.
Aug 30 2015Schwrber is out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports.Schwarber continues to struggle at the dish, with Saturday's 0-for-4 outing dropping his batting line to .266/.363/.545 on the season. He does have 12 home runs in 45 games, however, but the Cubs will turn to Matt Szzur in left field Sunday, batting sixth.
Aug 29 2015Schwarber is in the lineup Saturday, batting second and playing left field. After getting the night off against Clayton Kershaw, Schwarber will try to build upon his impressive rookie numbers (.273/.368/.560 12 HR, 35 RBI) when he faces Dodgers starter Mat Latos on Saturday.
Aug 28 2015Schwarber is out of the lineup Friday against Los Angeles.Matt Szczur, who homered off Dodgers' starter Clayton Kershaw earlier this season, will get the start in left field Friday over Schwarber.
Aug 26 2015Schwarber will bat leadoff Wednesday against the Giants. With Dexter Fowler receiving the day off against right-hander Jake Peavy, Schwarber will be afforded his first career start atop the order. The 22-year-old Schwarber's major league career has gotten off to an unbelievable start -- he's hit .275/.373/.610 with 12 homers in just 42 games -- and his normal spots in left field and the No. 2 spot in the lineup appear highly secure.
Aug 20 2015Schwarber hit his 10th homer, drew two walks and scored two runs Wednesday against the Tigers. He keeps on piling up the strikeouts, but whenever Schwarber makes contact, it tends to be scorching. He's homered four times in the last six games, and the rookie slugger's been drawing a good number of bases on balls lately as pitchers have started learning to show him more respect.
Aug 16 2015Schwarber is out of the lineup Sunday against the White Sox, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Schwarber has already established himself as one of the Cubs' top hitters with eight homers, 27 RBI, and a .315 batting average over his first 33 games in the big leagues, but manager Joe Maddon won't risk exposing the promising rookie to one of the game's toughest lefties in Chris Sale. Instead, Chris Denorfia will draw into left field to afford Schwarber a rest.
Aug 13 2015Schwarber went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a walk and four RBI in Thursday's win over the Brewers. After going 0-for-11 with six strikeouts over the prior three games, Schwarber bounced back in about as big a way as you could ask for. While his BABIP is quite high at .406, making it unlikely that that .330 average is sustainable, it's not hard to believe in Schwarber as a guy who can hit around .300 while providing big-time power numbers. Strikeouts are about the only hole in his game, but he seems like a good bet to reduce those as he gains experience.
Aug 7 2015Schwarber is very likely to have his role changed with Miguel Montero returning from the DL.Schwarber had been working as the Cubs' regular starting catcher for the last two weeks, so Montero returning will probably bump him out of that role and into the outfield more often -- which will be the case Friday. There is no way the Cubs are going to let Schwarber's bat leave the lineup for a significant amount of time, so look for some creativity from manager Joe Maddon.
Aug 7 2015Schwarber went 1-for-3, hitting a three-run home run during Thursday's win over the Giants.Schwarber made it 5-0 in the second with a three-run drive off Chris Heston and has now homered in his second consecutive game to help the Cubs defeat the Giants and move a half-game ahead of them in the race for the second NL wild card. The 22-year-old catcher is batting .342 with six home runs in 25 games this season.
Aug 4 2015Schwarber is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Pirates.Schwarber will sit for the second straight day with the Pirates starting J.A. Happ after giving the ball to fellow southpaw Francisco Liriano on Monday. David Ross will make another start behind the plate Tuesday night.
Aug 1 2015Manager John Madddon indicated Saturday that Schwarber will likely remain with the Cubs even after Miguel Montero is activated, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Schwarber continues to hit in the second spot of the Cubs' batting order, providing the club with an added offensive presence in the middle of the order. The lineup will likely shuffle when Montero returns from the injury, and Schwarber would also probably shift more permanently to left field, but it does sound as if he'll stay with the club for the the remainder of the season.
Jul 26 2015Schwarber is back in the lineup at catcher Sunday against the Phillies. He'll bat second in the order.Schwarber had sat out the Cubs' previous three games, despite an electrifying two-homer, four-RBI performance earlier this season. His spotty at-bats since his July 17 recall has been undoubtedly frustrating for those in weekly formats, but he'll make for one of the best catching options on the board in daily leagues whenever he's inserted into the lineup.
Jul 22 2015Schwarber went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base, and a walk in a losing effort Wednesday afternoon against the Reds.Currently working from the No. 2 spot in the order for the Cubs, Schwarber is raking as a big league hitter (.429/.467/.738), and he's now reaping the benefits of everyday playing time with Miguel Montero (thumb) on the DL. Moreover, he'll likely catch enough games in Montero's absence to qualify behind the plate for 2016.
Jul 22 2015Schwarber is not in the lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Reds.Schwarber served as the backstop for Game 1, so he'll take the nightcap off as David Ross slots in behind the plate.
Jul 22 2015Schwarber went 4-for-7 with a double, two homers, and four RBI in Tuesday's extra-inning victory over the Reds.Schwarber certainly showcased a flair for the dramatic Tuesday, as his ninth-inning two-run shot tied the game at 4-4 before his solo blast in the top of the 13th inning gave the Cubs the lead. With the Cubs and Reds slated to play a doubleheader Wednesday, Schwarber will almost certainly sit out one of the games, but after this performance, he's likely established himself as the Cubs' regular catcher with Miguel Montero (thumb) out until September.
Jul 19 2015Schwarber is expected to start three straight games beginning Monday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago reports.Schwarber has now rode the pine in back-to-back contests after collecting three base knocks Friday against the White Sox. Manager Joe Maddon was on the fence about starting him behind the plate Sunday, but elected to go with the more experienced David Ross in that situation. It doesn't sound like he'll hold back this week, however, with Schwarber expected to see heavy playing time, at least until Jon Lester comes up next in the rotation.
Jul 19 2015Schwarber is out of the lineup Sunday against the Braves. After collecting three hits Friday, Schwarber will have now taken a seat in back-to-back contests, as manager Joe Maddon will give David Ross his second straight start Sunday afternoon. It's no surprise Ross caught Jon Lester in Saturday's start, but Sunday will be just the fourth time Ross has caught back-to-back games this year. It's unclear what type of schedule Maddon has laid out for the young Schwarber at this point.
Jul 18 2015Schwarber is out of the lineup Saturday against Atlanta.Schwarber continued to swing a hot bat in his first game back with the Cubs on Friday, going 3-for-4 with a run. He won't be in the lineup Saturday, however, as manager Joe Maddon will go to veteran David Ross behind the plate. Schwarber has gotten off to an 11-for-26 start to his major league career and will likely be back in the lineup in short order.
Jul 17 2015Schwarber was 3-for-4 with a run scored in a losing effort against Atlanta on Friday night. The highly-regarded prospect batted second in the order and started behind the plate with Miguel Montero landing on the disabled list. He's now batting a robust .423, but he also committed a pair of errors in the game. He has tremendous skills with a bat in his hands, but is still a work in progress defensively, so he is likely to just share catching duties while the Cubs bring him along.
Jul 17 2015Schwarber has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa. With Miguel Montero landing on the DL on Friday due to a thumb injury, the Cubs responded as they normally have this season and recalled yet another highly touted prospect. Schwarber will take over behind the plate for the series opener against the Braves and will bat second in the order against righty Julio Teheran.
Jul 16 2015Schwarber will be called up to join the Cubs in Atlanta on Friday, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports. The Cubs are yet to officially confirm the report, but Mayo implies that Miguel Montero (thumb) will likely hit the DL, paving the way for Schwarber to return to the big league club. In his first stint wit the Cubs, Schwarber hit .364 with a home run and six RBI in six games (22 at-bats) as the designated hitter. In Montero's absence, Schwarber is expected to take over as the interim No. 1 catcher.
Jun 22 2015Schwarber was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Monday. As promised, Schwarber's successful first stint in the majors wasn't enough to keep him with the big-league club past Monday. Unless Miguel Montero or David Ross suffers an injury, Schwarber likely won't return to the majors until September, if at all this season. It's still unclear whether he'll stick as a catcher long term, but his bat will probably be hard to keep in the minors next year.
Jun 18 2015General manager Jed Hoyer indicated Thursday that Schwarber will be sent back to Triple-A Iowa on Monday regardless of how he performs over the weekend, Jim Bowden of ESPN reports.Schwarber broke out in his first major league start Thursday, going 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and three runs scored. Most of his playing time will likely come at designated hitter, with Miguel Montero likely serving behind the plate. While something still could change, it looks as though he will return to the minors, but he could leave a strong impression on his way out that could result in a recall if one of the two backstops suffers an injury.
Jun 17 2015Schwarber went 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and three runs Thursday against the Indians. Now that's how you make your first start in the big leagues. Schwarber may ostensibly be up for a cup of coffee right now, but if he shows himself to be an impact bat in this brief trial, it seems hard to believe that the Cubs will send him down. That goes double in the event that Miguel Montero's back stiffness lingers.
Jun 17 2015Schwarber is starting at DH and hitting eighth Wednesday against the Indians.Given his low price on the sites he is available on, Schwarber makes for an intriguing option in daily leagues. He has a chance to be the Cubs' catcher of the future, if he can stick there. The one thing that does not seem to be up for debate is whether Schwarber will hit enough for his bat to play almost anywhere. The Cubs are saying Schwarber is just up to DH while the team is playing in A.L. parks this week, but it is conceivable that if he is swinging a hot bat he could remain on the roster following Sunday's game in Minnesota.
Jun 17 2015Schwarber is now slated to bat sixth Wednesday against Cleveland. With Miguel Montero scratched due to back stiffness, Schwarber will move up two spots in the order as David Ross steps in to catch. The Cubs didn't seem to have any intention of using Schwarber behind the plate during what's expected to be a brief tenure with the big club, but they may not have a choice if this issue lingers for Montero.
Jun 16 2015Schwarber has officially been activated by the Cubs, but he is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Indians, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports. The move was announced Monday night, as Schwarber will come up from Double-A Tennessee for what is expected to be a short cameo at the major league level. Beginning Tuesday, the Cubs play seven straight games in AL parks, so Schwarber will almost certainly see a handful a starts as the DH. He'll be available only as a pinch hitter Tuesday, however. To clear room on the roster, the Cubs optioned Brian Schlitter to Triple-A Iowa.
Jun 15 2015Schwarber is being called up by the Cubs, reports Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish. One of the top prospects still in the minors, Schwarber has been destroying opposing pitching for Double-A Tennesssee, with a .318/.439/.578 line, 13 homers and a 42:48 BB:K. He'll now join fellow top prospects Kris Bryant and Addison Russell in the majors, giving the Cubs an even more enviable collection of young talent at the big league level. That said, Miguel Montero has been hitting well lately, so this may only be a cameo for Schwarber with the Cubs about to spend some time in American League parks, where they can use him as the DH.
Mar 26 2015Schwarber was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports. The fourth overall pick in last year's draft, Schwarber posted a .344/.428/.634 batting line and 18 homers in 72 games between Low-A and High-A in his first professional season. He looked a bit overmatched while with the big club this spring (4-for-18 with five strikeouts), but his offensive upside at the catcher position is unmatched in the minors.
Mar 6 2015Schwarber celebrated his 22nd birthday with a grand slam off Ryan Vogelsong in a split-squad loss to the Giants on Thursday.Though there is understandably a lot of hype surrounding many of the Cubs' top prospects, Schwarber has mostly flown under the radar since he was drafted in the first round in 2014. If he continues to develop as a catcher, he could be one of the top fantasy catchers in the game over the next decade. However, his path to the majors will be a lot shorter as an outfielder.
Jun 20 2014Schwarber will play mostly left field the rest of the season, Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com reports.GM Theo Epstein did say Schwarber will continue to catch on occasion, but he'll be deployed primarily in left, and the Cubs will decide in the offseason where he will stick permanently. The reasoning seems to be that Schwarber's bat will likely have him on a fast track through the minor league system, and the team doesn't want to slow him down by keeping him behind the plate. The fourth overall pick in the 2014 first-year player draft, Schwarber was promoted to Low-A Kane County earlier in the week.
Jun 5 2014The Cubs have selected Schwarber with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 first-year player draft.Schwarber went undrafted out of high school in Ohio, but put himself on the radar as a premier left-handed power bat on the strength of an impressive three-year career at Indiana that included 39 career homers in 178 games for the Hoosiers. In each of his three seasons in Bloomington, Schwarber showed a very good eye at the plate, drawing more walks (114) than strikeouts (89) and showing more speed than expected for a player with his frame. While Schwarber was used behind the plate in college, he also saw time in the outfield at Indiana, which is where he'll likely end up as a professional if he doesn't improve his throwing and receiving in the early stages of his professional development. Possessing an above average hit tool and plus power, Schwarber could emerge as one of the most impactful bats from the 2014 draft class.
