Jun 30 2025Rodon did not factor into the decision in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings with four strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The New York southpaw did not have his sharpest stuff in this 96-pitch outing, as he generated only seven whiffs. Rodon equaled his season-low with just four four Ks, previously set June 8 at Boston. Despite his struggles, the 32-year-old managed to hold the Toronto lineup relatively in check, yielding three singles and two doubles. Rodon will carry a 2.95 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 123:37 K:BB across 106.2 total innings into his next start, which currently lines up to be at the Mets this weekend.
Jun 24 2025Rodon took a no-decision Tuesday against Cincinnati, giving up no runs on four hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was the sixth scoreless start of the season for Rodon, who has spun at least six innings each time he's accomplished this feat. The veteran southpaw has now thrown at least five innings in each of his 17 outings, and he's punched out at least five in all but one of those appearances. Rodon will carry a stellar 2.92 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 119:34 K:BB over 101.2 innings into his next scheduled start against the Blue Jays, who are hitting a torrid .314 versus left-handed pitching since May 28.
Jun 19 2025Rodon (9-5) earned the win Thursday over the Angels, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon gave up three home runs Thursday, though they were all solo shots, as the left-hander eventually settled in to record the win and a quality start. Overall, it was a much-needed return to form for Rodon, who had dropped his previous two outings, allowing eight runs over 10 innings in that span. Rodon's ERA sits at 3.10 through 16 starts (95.2 innings) this season with a 0.98 WHIP and 114:33 K:BB. He's currently lined up to face the Reds on the road in his next outing.
Jun 15 2025Rodon (8-5) took the loss against the Red Sox on Saturday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon yielded an unearned run in the first inning before getting through the next two frames unscathed. He then surrendered a single run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, with the final tally charged to his stat line after he departed. The veteran hurler did induce an impressive 16 whiffs, but those led to just four punchouts -- his fewest in any appearance this season. Rodon has lost to Boston in each of his past two starts, giving up nine runs (eight earned) over 10 frames during that stretch. Prior to those two outings, the left-hander had been cruising, going 7-0 with a 1.27 ERA across nine starts from April 18 to June 3. To his fantasy managers' relief, Rodon won't face Boston again in his next start -- he's slated for a home matchup against the Angels next week.
Jun 8 2025Rodon (8-4) took the loss Sunday against the Red Sox, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over five-plus innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon tied his season high in earned runs allowed Sunday and took his first loss since April 13 (10 starts). The left-hander surrendered a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot by Carlos Narvaez, which ended Rodon's day after 90 pitches. Rodon had allowed just two runs in his previous four starts while accumulating a 31:7 K:BB in 25 innings. On the year, Rodon owns a 2.87 ERA across 84.2 innings.
Jun 4 2025Rodon (8-3) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Guardians, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw was locked in a pitchers' duel with Tanner Bibee most of the way, but back-to-back solo shots by Jazz Chisholm and Anthony Volpe to lead off the bottom of the seventh broke open a 1-1 tie. Rodon has won seven straight decisions, with his last loss coming back on April 13, and during his undefeated stretch he's rattled off seven quality starts in nine trips to the mound with a 1.27 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 70:15 K:BB in 56.2 innings. He'll look for his eighth straight win in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home this weekend against the Red Sox.
May 27 2025Rodon (7-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing five hits and no walks over seven scoreless innings against the Angels. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was masterful Tuesday, matching his season highs in innings and strikeouts. After a good but not great 2024 that culminated in a 3.96 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 175 innings, the 32-year-old is off to a fantastic start in 2025. Through 12 starts this year, the left-hander owns a stellar 2.60 ERA and 0.94 WHIP across 72.2 innings. With Rodon and Max Fried, the Yankees boast an elite duo at the top of their rotation.
May 22 2025Rodon (6-3) notched another win after throwing six shutout innings Thursday against the Rangers. He allowed just two hits and walked two batters while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In a game where the only offense of the day came via a Jorbit Vivas solo homer, Rodon turned in perhaps his best performance of the season. After Thursday's gem, he's now surrendered one or fewer runs in three of his last four starts, including two scoreless outings. The 32-year-old has struck out 28 batters over that four-game stretch and 80 for the season, which is tied for sixth in MLB.
May 16 2025Rodon (5-3) earned the win against the Mets on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and four walks while striking out five across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon tied a season high with four walks issued Friday, but he limited the Mets to one run in the fourth inning and finished his outing with 15 whiffs on 102 pitches (60 strikes). The 32-year-old southpaw has logged at least five strikeouts in each of his 10 starts this season, and his 72 strikeouts are tied with Cole Ragans for second-most in the American League behind Garrett Crochet (73). Rodon is slated to face the Rangers at home next week.
May 10 2025Rodon came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 11-7 loss to the A's, giving up four runs on eight hits over six innings. He struck out 10 without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Homers by Luis Urias in the second inning and Brent Rooker in the third accounted for all the damage off Rodon, who fanned double-digit batters for the first time this season thanks to 20 swinging strikes among his 98 pitches (67 total strikes). The veteran southpaw will take a 3.29 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB through 54.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Mets.
May 5 2025Rodon did not factor in the decision during Monday's loss to the Padres. He allowed three hits and a walk over 6.2 shutout innings while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was dominant Monday; he did not give up an extra-base hit and only one Padre reached scoring position with him on the mound. He was in line for his fifth win of the season before San Diego posted a four-run eighth inning to win 4-3. Rodon has given up two or fewer runs in four straight starts, dropping his season ERA from 5.48 to 2.96 in the process. He also completed at least six frames in each of those four outings. Rodon will look to ride the momentum into his next matchup, which is lined up to be on the road against the Athletics this weekend.
Apr 18 2025Rodon (2-3) earned the win against Tampa Bay on Friday. He allowed two hits and four walks while striking out nine across six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After putting the first two batters he faced in the first inning on base, Rodon bounced back with three consecutive strikeouts and was in control for the rest of his outing, earning his first quality start of the season. The 32-year-old southpaw has fanned at least eight batters in each of his last three starts, and his 37 punchouts on the year ranks third in the majors behind Cole Ragans (42) and Zack Wheeler (41). Rodon is in line to take on the Guardians on the road next week, when he'll look to make it two wins in a row.
Apr 13 2025Rodon (1-3) took the loss against the Giants on Sunday, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks with eight strikeouts over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon surrendered all four of his runs on a pair of homers by Jung Hoo Lee in the fourth and sixth innings. The veteran southpaw has pitched into the sixth frame in all four of his starts this season, but he has also allowed four or more earned runs in three of them. He'll take a 5.48 ERA, 1.13 ERA and 28:12 K:BB across 23 innings into a road matchup with the Rays next weekend.
Apr 7 2025Rodon (1-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks over six-plus innings Monday, striking out eight and taking a loss against Detroit. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon retired the first seven batters he faced, but Andy Ibanez broke the dam with a three-run blast in the third inning. Justyn-Henry Malloy knocked a two-run single in the fifth and Detroit scored one more run in the seventh after chasing Rodon from the contest. After picking up a win in his season debut, Rodon has been charged with nine earned runs over 12 innings in his last two outings. His ERA has jumped to 5.19 with a 20:9 K:BB through 17.1 frames. Rodon's next start is projected to be this weekend at home against the Giants.
Apr 2 2025Rodon took a line drive off the bat of Ketel Marte in the fifth inning of Wednesday night's loss to the Diamondbacks, and while he had a bruise and wrap on his arm, an X-ray on the arm came back clean, Gary Phillips of The New York Daily News reports. Rodon allowed four early runs, but he ultimately retired the last 10 batters he faced to complete six innings, giving up three hits and four walks while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon also struggled with his velocity early on, averaging 93 mph for the start after averaging 94.5 mph Opening Day. He was also seen looking at his pitching hand throughout the start. "I tend to look pretty often," Rodon said of his frequent glances toward Yankee Stadium's radar gun, "but definitely down velo today. A little cold, just slow to get moving, but I'm not super worried about it."
Mar 27 2025Rodon (1-0) earned the win Thursday versus Milwaukee, striking out seven and giving up one run on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander generated 13 swinging strikes and six groundball outs on 89 pitches, with the only damage against him coming via a solo homer by Vinny Capra during the third inning. Rodon had some command issues during spring training with six walks and two wild pitches in 10 frames, but he was more in control during his season debut. A matchup with the Diamondbacks likely awaits next week for his second start of 2025.
Mar 22 2025Rodon hurled 4.2 scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game against the Tigers on Friday, allowing three hits and issuing three walks while striking out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was a bit wild in the outing, as he threw just 45 of 77 pitches for strikes and handed out three free passes. However, he didn't give up any extra-base hits and got three of his five strikeouts on changeups. Rodon concluded the exhibition slate with a 5.40 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB over 10 innings. His next start is scheduled for Opening Day against Milwaukee.
Mar 14 2025Manager Aaron Boone announced Friday that Rodon will start Opening Day against the Brewers on March 27, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander will step in as the Yankees' Opening Day starter with Gerrit Cole (elbow) lost for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Rodon struggled during his first year in the Bronx during 2023 with a 6.85 ERA in 14 regular-season starts, but he rebounded last season and finished with a 3.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195:57 K:BB across 175 regular-season innings.
Mar 11 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Max Fried "might not line up" to be the team's Opening Day starter, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports, making Rodon a possibility for the assignment. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gerrit Cole was the logical choice to start Opening Day for New York until he hurt his elbow and was diagnosed as needing Tommy John surgery. Fried would make sense to step in for the Opening Day honor, but the team may elect to not tinker with his schedule. If Fried isn't assigned the role, Rodon would be next in line given his standing as the Yankees No. 2 starter sans Cole and Luis Gil (lat). Rodon hasn't pitched in a spring game since Feb. 27, and it isn't clear when he'll make his next Grapefruit League appearance, but the Yankees haven't indicated that he's dealing with an injury or illness. Boone indicated Tuesday that the team is expected to announce an Opening Day starter in the next few days.
Feb 28 2025Rodon allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon struck out three batters in a scoreless first inning, but he then allowed a two-run homer to Johan Rojas in the second. The veteran lefty pitched into the third, departing with two outs after giving up a run-scoring double. Rodon has yielded six runs over 5.1 frames through two spring starts, but he's building up his pitch count nicely, throwing 57 pitches Thursday.
Feb 23 2025Rodon tossed 2.2 innings against Toronto in Grapefruit League play Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out one batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It wasn't a great exhibition debut for Rodon, though he wasn't hit particularly hard -- all five knocks against him were singles. The veteran lefty did log a promising workload with 48 pitches, and his changeup usage was up from his norm last season, which could be an indication of his plans to adjust for the coming campaign after opponents belted 21 homers off his four-seamer last year. Rodon is expected to slot third in the Yankees' rotation behind Gerrit Cole and Max Fried.
Oct 28 2024Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that the blister issue Rodon dealt with during his World Series Game 2 start is "manageable" and is not expected to prevent him from making another start, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The blister might have affected Rodon's command against the Dodgers, particularly with his slider. However, it does not appear he's in danger of missing a start, which is tentatively slated for Friday in Game 6, if necessary. Rodon yielded three home runs and four runs in total in his Game 2 loss.
Oct 24 2024Rodon will start Saturday in Game 2 of the World Series against the Dodgers, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was the obvious choice to follow Game 1 starter Gerrit Cole and the southpaw revealed Thursday that he's been told he will indeed take the ball in Game 2. In three starts so far this postseason, Rodon holds a 4.40 ERA and 22:1 K:BB over 14.1 frames. He will be opposed by Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Oct 13 2024Rodon will get the start against Cleveland in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Monday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's most recent start was in Game 2 of the ALDS on Oct. 7, when he took the loss against Kansas City. In that contest, the left-hander gave up four runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings. Rodon posted a 3.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 195:57 K:BB over 175 frames during the regular season and led New York with 16 victories. The Guardians haven't yet announced their starter for the first game of the ALCS.
Oct 2 2024Rodon will start Oct. 7 in Game 2 of the ALDS, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will follow Game 1 starter Gerrit Cole against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. The lefty went through his fair share of ups and downs during the regular season, but he finished on an upswing in September, collecting a 2.20 ERA and 34:10 K:BB over 28.2 frames covering five starts.
Sep 28 2024Rodon allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Friday. He struck out five during the loss to Pittsburgh. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon worked through five scoreless frames before coughing up back-to-back solo homers to Nick Gonzales and Bryan Reynolds in the sixth inning. It was just the third time that Rodon walked four or more batters out of his 32 starts this season. On the bright side, he forced 17 whiffs, including eight with his fastball. Rodon threw at least five innings in each of his last seven starts, posting a 2.68 ERA during that span. He ends the 2024 regular season with a 3.96 ERA and a 195:57 K:BB through 175 frames.
Sep 22 2024Rodon (16-9) picked up the win over the Athletics on Saturday, allowing five hits and one walk over six scoreless innings while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Already enjoying a 2-0 lead by the time he took the mound, Rodon proceeded to shut out the Athletics over six frames despite allowing at least one hit in five of those innings. It marked the second time in his last six starts that the veteran southpaw has hurled six shutout innings, and he's now pitched to the tune of a 1.93 ERA in September through four starts while posting a 2-0 record. Rodon has also held his opponents to two or fewer runs in four consecutive outings to open the month.
Sep 15 2024Rodon (15-9) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon served up a third-inning homer to Tyler O'Neill that, the fifth long ball he's allowed over the past four starts, otherwise held the Red Sox in check to collect his 15th win. Rodon recorded one out following a leadoff double in the sixth but was subsequently pulled after 88 pitches, rendering him two outs shy of a quality start. It was the seventh time in his last 10 starts that Rodon has allowed two runs or fewer over five or more innings, posting a 3.18 ERA across 56.2 innings with 74 strikeouts over that stretch. The veteran lefty is excelling as the Yankees are making their push toward the AL East pennant. Next up for the surging Rodon is a matchup in Oakland against the hapless A's.
Sep 9 2024Rodon didn't factor into the decision Monday against Kansas City, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk across six innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon fanned eight or more batters for a third straight start but gave up his third and fourth home runs of that stretch Monday. Both long balls charged to Rodon were solo shots, coming off the bats of Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe. Still, the left-handed pitcher held on for the quality start. Rodon is tentatively scheduled for a home start against the Red Sox this weekend.
Sep 3 2024Rodon allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out 11 over six innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lone hit run on Rodon's line was a solo home run by Josh Jung in the fourth inning. The Yankees pulled ahead 2-1 in the seventh, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead, denying Rodon his 15th victory of the year. It was still an excellent performance for the southpaw, who has alternated between good and poor outings since the start of August. He's allowed 13 runs over 32 innings in that span and now has a 4.19 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 172:49 K:BB through 152.1 innings overall. Rodon's next start is projected to be at home versus the Royals.
Aug 28 2024Rodon (14-9) took the loss against Washington on Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon fell behind on his second pitch of the game when he served up Dylan Crews' first major-league homer. Things didn't get much better for the southpaw from there, as he gave up another run the first frame, two more in the second and a fifth and final run in the fourth. Rodon did manage to induce 16 whiffs and notch a healthy eight punchouts, but he also had five bases stolen on his watch and was bit by a wild pitch and a balk. The veteran hurler has been frustratingly inconsistent of late -- he's hurled two scoreless outings among his past five starts, but in the other three appearances during that stretch he's given up a combined 12 runs over 14.1 innings.
Aug 23 2024Rodon (14-8) earned the win against the Rockies on Friday, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out five over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon generated 14 swinging strikes on 102 pitches and tallied three separate 1-2-3 innings to log his first quality start in four August outings. The southpaw has recorded five or more punchouts in 10 consecutive starts and is now tied for the major-league lead in wins with 14. On the season, he owns a 4.16 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 153:45 K:BB across 140.2 innings and lines up to face the Nationals on the road next week.
Aug 17 2024Rodon (13-8) took the loss against the Tigers on Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was burned by a three-run second inning in his shortest outing of the season. He entered Saturday on a four-game win streak but has now failed to log a quality start in each of his three August outings. On the year, the southpaw owns a 4.34 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 148:44 K:BB across 134.2 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Guardians next week.
Aug 10 2024Rodon (13-7) picked up the win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rangers, allowing three hits and five walks over 5.2 scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw wasn't exactly sharp as he set a new season high in free passes, but Rodon kept Texas from cashing in the extra baserunners en route to his fourth straight win. He was lifted after 110 pitches (64 strikes), falling just short of his 13th quality start of the year. Rodon has given up three runs or less in five straight outings, posting a 2.54 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB through 28.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come next weekend on the road in Detroit.
Aug 9 2024Rodon won't start Friday against the Rangers after the game was postponed due to expected inclement weather in New York. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The contest will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader Saturday. Rodon's start will be pushed back a day, although it's not yet clear whether he will start the first or second game of Saturday's twin bill.
Aug 3 2024Rodon (12-7) earned the win against the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon yielded a solo homer in the first inning and was responsible for two more runs after being pulled at 106 pitches in the sixth. His fastball velocity was about one mph above his season average, and he accumulated 13 swinging strikes on the pitch while throwing it 61 times. The southpaw has won three consecutive contests and now owns a 4.37 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 137:38 K:BB across 125.2 innings this season. He'll try to earn his fourth straight victory against the Rangers next week.
Jul 29 2024Rodon (11-7) got the win Sunday over the Red Sox, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon put together another excellent start to help the Yankees take the series in Boston. His only blunder of an inning came in the fourth when he allowed back-to-back home runs to Rob Refsnyder and Connor Wong but was backed by plenty of offense from his guys. Rodon has now exceeded six innings in consecutive starts for the first time since early June and has now allowed three runs or less in 17 of his 22 starts this year. The 31-year-old owns a 4.34 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 129:36 K:BB in 120.1 innings and will aim for his third straight win when he takes the ball at home versus the Blue Jays over the weekend.
Jul 22 2024Rodon (10-7) picked up the win Monday against Tampa Bay, yielding one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out 10 over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only damage done to Rodon came on a solo home run by Jose Siri in the fifth inning. The southpaw baffled hitters all afternoon, racking up 37 called + swinging strikes en route to a season-best 10 punchouts. Monday's start was much needed for Rodon, who hobbled into the All-Star break mired in a brutal slump. In six starts leading up to the intermission, the 31-year-old compiled a 0-5 record with a disastrous 9.67 ERA and 1.96 WHIP. Perhaps the All-Star break has rejuvenated Rodon, but he remains a high-risk, high-reward fantasy play moving forward. He will look to keep things rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend in Boston.
Jul 14 2024Rodon did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Orioles. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon labored through his outing Sunday, needing 98 pitches to complete four innings and allowing only two runs but tossing four or more pitches to 17 of the 19 batters he faced. Rodon's no-decision was the first time in 15 starts he did not factor into the decision and broke a string of five straight defeats after winning eight of his previous nine during that stretch. The All-Star break will provide a much-needed respite for Rodon, who has an ERA of 9.66 with a 1.96 WHIP and 38 strikeouts over his last six starts spanning 27 innings.
Jul 9 2024Rodon (9-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Rays, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon allowed four straight hits to open the bottom of the first inning, including an Isaac Paredes three-run homer that extended Tampa's lead to 4-1. While Rodon would blank the Rays over his final three innings, the Yankees couldn't climb out of the early hole in an eventual 5-3 loss. It's the fifth straight loss for the 31-year-old left-hander -- he's struggled to a 10.50 ERA in that span, allowing 27 earned runs across 23 innings. Overall, Rodon sports a 4.63 ERA across 19 starts (103 innings) this year with a 1.26 WHIP and 105:30 K:BB. He'll look to right the ship in his next outing, currently slated for this weekend on the road versus Baltimore.
Jul 4 2024Rodon allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out eight batters over 5.1 innings in a loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he logged his fourth straight defeat, this was a bounce-back effort of sorts for Rodon after he surrendered 21 runs (20 earned) over 13.2 innings across his previous three starts. The veteran hurler did, however, continue to struggle with the long ball Wednesday, yielding multiple homers for the third straight outing. Rodon has given up seven home runs during that three-game stretch, and his 18 homers allowed on the campaign is tied for third most in the majors.
Jun 27 2024Rodon (9-5) took the loss against Toronto on Thursday, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was shellshocked in the first frame, giving up five runs before recording an out. He gave up three more runs in the second, all of which came on George Springer's second three-run homer of the game. Rodon at least managed to hang on for five innings to avoid depleting the Yankees' bullpen, but the damage was more than enough to result in his third straight loss. Rodon has allowed 20 earned runs across 13.2 frames during the losing streak, catapulting his season ERA up from 2.92 to 4.42.
Jun 22 2024Rodon (9-4) took the loss Friday as the Yankees fell 8-1 to Atlanta, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Atlanta offense came to life at the wrong time for Rodon, as he got taken deep by Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley and Matt Olson before exiting the game after 93 pitches (56 strikes). The southpaw hadn't served up multiple homers in a start since May 2. After a run of seven straight quality starts, he's been tagged for 12 earned runs in 8.2 innings over his last two outings. Rodon will try to rebound in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Toronto.
Jun 15 2024Rodon (9-3) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out seven over five innings to take the loss Saturday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had posted a quality start in each outing during his seven-game winning streak, but both impressive stretches were snapped Saturday. The Red Sox put up all five runs against Rodon during the first two innings, and the Yankees' offense wasn't able to muster a comeback. The southpaw still has a strong 3.28 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 81:23 K:BB through 85 innings over 15 starts this year. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is projected to be at home versus Atlanta.
Jun 10 2024Rodon (9-2) earned the win against the Royals on Monday, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with three strikeouts over seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon cruised through the majority of the game, with a two-out RBI single by Freddy Fermin in the seventh inning being his only blemish. While Rodon only struck out three, he generated 14 swinging strikes and didn't allow any extra-base hits. Each of Rodon's seven consecutive wins have also been quality starts, and he has now completed at least six innings in 10 of his 14 outings. He owns a 2.93 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 74:20 K:BB on the season and will look to continue his win streak against the Red Sox on Saturday.
Jun 5 2024Rodon (8-2) earned the win over Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out nine batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was staked to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back, keeping alive a perfect game until Carlos Santana homered with one out in the sixth frame. The left-handed hurler picked up his sixth consecutive win, and he's notched a quality start in each of those victories. Rodon also dominated with 18 swinging strikes Wednesday en route to a season-high nine punchouts. He's bounced back from a disastrous first year in New York last season to post a 3.08 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB through 73 innings during the current campaign.
May 31 2024Rodon (7-2) picked up the win over the Angels on Thursday, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk over six-plus innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon ran through the Angels' lineup for most of the night, surrendering one run over the first six frames while producing five 1-2-3 innings. However, the veteran lefty would run into trouble in the seventh after allowing the first three batters to reach, paving the way for Ian Hamilton to take over in relief. Rodon has won each of his last five starts, posting a 26:6 K:BB over that stretch. He's also logged quality starts in five straight outings.
May 24 2024Rodon (6-2) earned the win Friday over the Padres, pitching six shutout innings while allowing three hits and three walks with two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon wasn't dominant, but the Padres' offense didn't find much success. This was a fourth straight quality start for the southpaw, who has won all of those outings while allowing just five runs over 24.1 innings. Rodon has had just one bad start this season -- May 2 in Baltimore. He's at a 2.95 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 57:19 K:BB over 61 innings through 11 starts on the season. The 31-year-old is projected to make his next start on the road versus the Angels, which is another favorable matchup.
May 19 2024Rodon (5-2) earned the win Sunday against the White Sox, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon allowed a homer and a triple in the second inning, leading to two runs, but didn't allow another runner to cross the plate through six quality frames against his former club. According to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confessed after the game that Rodon was battling a cold all week, and the skipper considered pulling him after five but was impressed with the way he battled back after the shaky second frame. It was the third consecutive quality start and win for Rodon, who will carry a 3.27 ERA into his next start, tentatively slated to take place in San Diego when the Yankees travel to take on the Padres during a three-game weekend set.
May 14 2024Rodon (4-2) picked up the win Tuesday against Minnesota, allowing one run on six hits and no walks during six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon turned in his fourth quality start of his last five appearances and didn't issue a four-ball walk for a third straight contest. The lone run charged against him came via a Ryan Jeffers homer in the bottom of the first. After posting a 6.85 ERA in his first season in New York, Rodon has bounced back with a 3.31 ERA through nine starts and is tied for the team lead in wins. Rodon is scheduled to close out a two-start week with a Sunday start against the White Sox -- the team he played his first seven seasons with.
May 9 2024Rodon (3-2) earned the win over Houston on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon gave up six earned runs over four frames versus the Orioles in his worst start of the campaign his last time out, but he bounced back with a strong showing Wednesday. The left-hander racked up 16 swinging strikes against the Astros, leading to his second-highest single-game strikeout total of the season. While Rodon's season ERA sits at a mediocre 3.56, that's largely due to the blowup outing against Baltimore. He has posted a 2.54 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 37:14 K:BB over 39 innings across his other seven starts.
May 2 2024Rodon (2-2) took the loss Thursday against the Orioles, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits over four innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After shutting out Baltimore through the first two innings, Rodon allowed three solo home runs between the third and fourth innings before the O's put up a four spot in the fifth, forcing the Yankees to turn to the bullpen. It's a deflating effort from Rodon, who'd allowed just one run over 13 innings in his previous two starts. His ERA is up to 3.68 on the season with a 1.28 WHIP and 36:14 K:BB in seven starts. Rodon will look to bounce back in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Astros.
Apr 28 2024Rodon (2-1) earned the win Saturday against the Brewers after he struck out eight and allowed one run on two hits and a walk over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander delivered seven scoreless frames in his previous start and followed up with a season-high eight strikeouts in Milwaukee on Saturday, with the lone blemish against him being a solo homer from Rhys Hoskins in the opening frame. Rodon surrendered 15 long balls in 14 starts last season but has a 0.8 HR/9 through six outings in 2024. It's been an encouraging start to the campaign with a 2.48 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 30:14 K:BB across 32.2 innings.
Apr 22 2024Rodon did not factor into the decision, allowing one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings during Monday's 2-0 loss to the Athletics. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was mired in a pitcher's duel with Oakland's JP Sears and neither blinked, leaving each with a tough luck no-decision. Rodon managed seven innings with 92 pitches, though he threw first-pitch strikes to only nine of the 25 batters he faced. The continued control issues that resulted in his fifth consecutive start with multiple walks was the only negative in what served as a rebound for Rodon, who lasted only four innings during his last start against Toronto. The 31-year-old lefty will carry a 2.70 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into his next start, tentatively slated to take place over the weekend in Milwaukee.
Apr 17 2024Rodon (1-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over four innings as the Yankees fell 5-4 to Toronto. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw kept the ball in the park, but he needed 101 pitches (62 strikes) to record 12 outs in an uneven performance. Rodon has failed to last five innings in two of his first four starts this season, posting a 3.66 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 18:11 K:BB through 19.2 innings, but he lines up for a plum assignment at home in his next trip to the mound, which should come early next week against the A's.
Apr 9 2024Rodon (1-0) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and two walks over six-plus innings in a 3-2 victory over the Marlins. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw carried a shutout into the seventh inning, but after a leadoff walk to Josh Bell, Anthony Rizzo botched a potential double-play ball and both runners scored after Rodon had left the mound. He tossed 58 of 89 pitches for strikes in his first quality start of the season while lowering his ERA to 1.72, and Rodon will carry a 13:7 K:BB through 15.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road in Toronto early next week.
Apr 3 2024Rodon did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon struggled out of the gate, allowing a leadoff double to the first batter he faced and later surrendering solo home runs in the second and fifth innings. Five of the seven hits he allowed on the afternoon went for extra bases, while the veteran lefty also failed to make it through six innings for the second straight start to open the season. On a positive note, Rodon has held his opponents to two or fewer runs in each of those outings.
Mar 29 2024Rodon yielded a run on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings during Friday's win over the Astros. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon coughed up a run in the first inning but was able to avoid danger throughout the rest of his start, including a third-inning jam when he punched out Jose Abreu and Chas McCormick to strand a pair of runners. After posting a brutal 6.85 ERA in 2023, Rodon looked shaky at times Friday but generally kept the game under control. He forced 11 whiffs and the fastball touched 98 mph. The 31-year-old southpaw is currently in line to start in Arizona next week.
Mar 26 2024Rodon pitched 19.1 innings over five starts in Grapefruit League action, posting a 4.19 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon made just one appearance last spring before suffering a forearm injury that significantly cut down his season, so the fact that he made it through the exhibition slate without any health issues this spring is a positive development. Per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, Rodon dropped weight in the offseason and looked to be in better shape in camp as he aims to put last year's injury-plagued and largely forgettable performance in the rearview mirror. While the southpaw's spring stats weren't overwhelming, Kuty reports that Rodon's fastball sat in the mid-90s, which is in line with where it has been during recent campaigns. The Yankees may need Rodon to step up as the team's ace with Gerrit Cole likely out for at least the first two months of the regular season due to an elbow injury.
Feb 27 2024Rodon tossed 2.2 innings against Toronto on Sunday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's first start of the spring was promising, as he got more than half of his outs via punchout and gave up just one run (on a homer by Alejandro Kirk). Rodon's first season in New York was a disaster, as he posted a 6.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP while battling injuries and totaling just 64.1 innings, but he appears healthy entering Grapefruit League competition and could be poised for a bounce-back campaign. He's a high-risk, high-reward target in fantasy drafts, as he struck out 237 batters as recently as 2022 but has reached 150 innings just three times over nine major-league seasons.
Feb 15 2024Rodon sat in the mid-90s and touched 97 mph during a live batting practice session Tuesday, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Martino notes that Rodon was sitting in the 90-to-92 mph range during his early live batting practice sessions last year and, of course, then went on to have an injury-shortened, disappointing season. Rodon reported to camp this spring early and in better shape, and there is growing internal optimism about the left-hander's chances of bouncing back in 2024, per Martino.
Sep 29 2023Rodon (3-8) took the loss Friday, failing to record an out while allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had put together consecutive quality starts in his previous two outings but failed to record an out in allowing all eight batters to reach base prior to his removal. He left with the bases loaded and having already allowed five runs, but by the time the inning was over, all eight runners had crossed the plate in what marks the worst outing of his career. It was a rough first season in New York for Rodon, who saw his ERA rise more than a point from 5.74 to 6.85 with this outing.
Sep 24 2023Rodon (3-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk over 6.1 innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Diamondbacks got to Rodon twice in the opening inning, putting the Yankees in an early 2-0 hole. The left-hander would then deliver five shutout innings before Arizona scored three more runs in the seventh. Rodon's been inconsistent of late, pitching to a 6.65 ERA over his last four starts (21.2 innings). Overall, it's been a tough first season with the Yankees for Rodon -- he'll carry a 5.74 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP and 64 strikeouts into his final start of the year, currently scheduled for late next week in Kansas City.
Sep 23 2023Rodon won't take the hill Saturday against Arizona as scheduled, as the game has been postponed due to rain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the game will be moved to Monday, on what had been a scheduled off day for the Yankees. The Yankees have yet to confirm their reshuffled rotation plans, but it's likely Rodon moves to Sunday, pushing Clarke Schmidt back to Monday.
Sep 17 2023Rodon (3-6) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits over 6.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out 10. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a strong outing from Rodon, who set a new season high with 10 strikeouts while pitching into the seventh inning for the first time this year. However, he'd be stuck with the loss, as the Yankees offense couldn't provide enough run support in the 3-2 defeat. Rodon's now struck out 19 in his last two starts (11.2 innings), allowing four runs in that span. He'll carry a 5.90 ERA into his next outing, currently scheduled as a home matchup with the Diamondbacks.
Sep 13 2023Rodon (3-5) picked up the win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The nine strikeouts were a season high for the veteran southpaw, who generated 16 swinging strikes among his 93 pitches. Rodon also walked more than two batters for the first time since Aug. 1 though, and he served up at least one homer for the seventh straight outing, in this case the first career long ball for rookie Ceddanne Rafaela. Since returning to the rotation in late August after recovering from a hamstring issue, Rodon has a 4.81 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 24.1 innings, numbers which represent a marginal improvement on his performance through his first six starts as a Yankee. He'll try to build on this performance when he next takes the mound, which is likely to happen this weekend in Pittsburgh.
Sep 8 2023Rodon (2-5) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings in a 10-3 loss to Detroit. He struck out four without issuing any walks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old spotted the Tigers a two-run lead before registering an out Thursday, allowing a leadoff double to Matt Vierling before Spencer Torkelson hit a wall-scraping homer to right field. Rodon surrendered five more runs across the third and fourth frames, resulting in an early exit with a season-high seven runs charged to his line. After back-to-back campaigns with a sub-3.00 ERA, the southpaw has endured a tumultuous and abbreviated first season in New York, compiling a 2-5 record with an unsightly 6.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a disappointing 1.95 K/BB ratio across 10 starts (46.1 innings). Rodon will look to get back on track in his next outing, tentatively scheduled to take place in Boston early next week.
Sep 1 2023Rodon (2-4) pitched five innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four batters on his way to a win in Friday's 6-2 victory over the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon put together another strong start Friday, allowing two or fewer runs for the third straight outing. He gave up a solo homer to Jose Abreu in the bottom of the second and then an RBI-double by Kyle Tucker in the third accounted for the final run on the left-hander's line. Since Aug. 22, Rodon has posted a 2.87 ERA over 15.2 innings in three starts.
Aug 28 2023Rodon did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in 4.2 innings against the Rays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays piled on two runs versus Rodon in the first inning via a solo home run by Brandon Lowe and an error. The left-hander went on to retire 11 straight batters but got himself into trouble in the fifth with two walks and was pulled in favor of Ian Hamilton after 84 pitches. Rodon registered a season-high seven strikeouts and allowed only two hard-hit balls but failed to reach five innings for the third time in his last four starts. The 30-year-old now owns a 5.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 33:20 K:BB in 37.2 innings. He went winless in August and will look to change his fortunes in a matchup against the Astros his next time out.
Aug 22 2023Rodon did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits over six innings against the Nationals. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon pitched well in his return from the IL, holding the Nationals to just one run while making it through six innings for the first time this season. Through seven starts (33 innings) this season, Rodon is 1-4 with a 6.27 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 26:18 K:BB. He'll look to build on Tuesday's outing in his next start, tentatively scheduled for this weekend in Tampa Bay.
Aug 18 2023Rodon (hamstring) will return from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Nationals, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had no lingering issues after a five-inning simulated game Wednesday and will jump back into action Aug. 22, exactly 15 days removed from his placement on the IL due to a left hamstring strain. The 30-year-old left-hander has thrown only 27 innings this season and carries a 7.33 ERA, and Washington could be a tough matchup for him -- the Nationals are seventh this season in wOBA against left-handed pitching, and third in strikeout rate.
Aug 16 2023Rodon (hamstring) threw a five-inning simulated game Wednesday in Tampa, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As long as he responds well to the workout with no renewed discomfort, Rodon should be able to slot back into the Yankees' starting rotation next Tuesday (Aug. 22) against the Nationals. He's been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 7 with a left hamstring strain after also missing the first three months of the 2023 campaign because of forearm and back problems.
Aug 13 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Rodon (hamstring) will face hitters during a simulated game later this week, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon reportedly looked good in a bullpen session Saturday, and he will travel to Tampa to begin the next stage of his rehab process after the Yankees finish their series in Miami. If all goes according to plan, Rodon should be able to return immediately once he's eligible Aug. 22.
Aug 10 2023Rodon (hamstring) threw from flat ground Wednesday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was placed on the IL on Monday due to a low-grade left hamstring strain, but the Yankees indicated at the time that he would continue throwing. That plan has come to fruition, as the left-hander played catch Wednesday in Chicago. The initial indication is that Rodon could need just a minimum stay on the injured list, which would put hit in line to return for a home series against Washington that begins Aug. 22.
Aug 8 2023Rodon (hamstring) will continue to throw on flat ground in hopes that he will need only a minimum 15-day stay on the injured list, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon is dealing with a low-grade left hamstring strain and wanted to pitch through the injury, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. However, the team decided to exercise caution and go ahead and IL him. Rodon has struggled mightily this season, posting a 7.33 ERA with 25:18 K:BB in 27 innings since coming back from forearm and back injuries.
Aug 7 2023The Yankees placed Rodon on the 15-day injured list Monday after he was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain following an MRI. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had hoped to avoid a stint on the IL after he exited his start in Sunday's loss to the Astros in the third inning with what the Yankees had labeled as a left hamstring tightness, but follow-up tests determined he was dealing with a muscular tear. The veteran southpaw is headed to the IL for the second time this season, after he began the campaign on the shelf while recovering from forearm and back injuries before making his Yankees debut July 7. A timeline for Rodon's return hasn't yet been established, but his upcoming absence likely solidifies the struggling Luis Severino's spot in the rotation after Yankees manager Aaron Boone had previously been non-committal about Severino's role moving forward.
Aug 6 2023Rodon (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on Monday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was removed from Sunday's start against the Astros due to left hamstring tightness, and the Yankees aren't yet sure whether he'll require a trip to the injured list. He described his exit as precautionary, but his imaging should help offer clarity on the severity of the injury, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the team update his status afterward. If Rodon is unable to make his next turn through the rotation, Luis Severino is a strong candidate to remain a starter.
Aug 1 2023Rodon (1-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks over four innings against the Rays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After Rodon surrendered a run in the second inning, Yandy Diaz led off the third with a solo homer before Randy Arozarena tacked on a two-run blast later in the frame. It's the third time through his first five outings that Rodon has allowed four or more runs. The 30-year-old southpaw's ERA is up to 6.29 with a 1.48 WHIP and 20:16 K:BB through his first 24.1 innings with the Yankees. Rodon will look to get on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend against Houston.
Jul 26 2023Rodon (1-3) earned the win over the Mets on Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon logged his deepest outing of the campaign, notching one more out than in his season debut against the Cubs on July 7. The left-hander continued to struggle with his control -- he's walked multiple batters in each of his four starts and has 12 walks across 20.1 innings on the campaign -- but held the Mets to just one extra-base hit and one run. Rodon appears to still be trying to find his groove, as he's recorded just a 6.7 K/9 after posting a 12.2 K/9 over his previous two campaigns combined. Nonetheless, Wednesday's win was a step in the right direction given that Rodon had dropped each of his first three starts.
Jul 19 2023Rodon (0-3) took the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing six runs on four hits and five walks while striking out three batters over 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon followed an unsuccessful pattern in each of the first two innings: issuing a free pass and giving up a home run to the next batter. He then walked the first two hitters he faced in the third, both of whom came around to score. Altogether, the left-hander issued five free passes, one short of a career high. Rodon has lost all three of his starts since coming off the injured list July 7, though this was easily his worst outing so far. He's yet to find his footing as a Yankee, posting a 7.36 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 11:9 K:BB while serving up four homers over 14.2 innings.
Jul 14 2023Rodon (0-2) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six over five innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon gave up three runs in the second inning and a Randal Grichuk solo home run in the fourth. The positive from this outing was Rodon stretching out to 88 pitches (51 strikes), up from 69 pitches in his season debut a week ago. The veteran southpaw should be just about clear of any workload restrictions give his pitch count Friday, but he'll need to get some better run support. He's got an 8:4 K:BB with a 1.16 WHIP through 10.1 innings through two starts this season. Rodon's projected for a road start versus the Angels in his next outing.
Jul 8 2023Rodon (0-1) took the loss against the Cubs on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's first game as a Yankee came after a trio of minor-league rehab starts during which he allowed just one run and posted a 17:3 K:BB over 10.2 innings. The left-hander wasn't quite as effective against the Cubs, though he was just two outs away from recording a quality start. Rodon had topped out at 58 pitches during his rehab stint, and he was able to increase that number to 69 pitches Friday. Though he took the loss -- largely due to a complete absence of run support by New York's offense -- this was overall a positive outing for the veteran hurler given his long injury layoff. Rodon will have ample time to recover during the All-Star break, and he could start New York's first game in Colorado following the Midsummer Classic.
Jul 7 2023Rodon was activated from the 60-day injured list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will make his long-awaited Yankees and season debut Friday against the Cubs following a long absence due to forearm and then back injuries. The left-hander threw just 58 pitches in his final rehab start, so he'll be under some level of workload restriction Friday, although manager Aaron Boone declined to reveal exactly what that would be, per Laura Albanese of Newsday. Rodon signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Yankees over the offseason.
Jul 2 2023Rodon (back/forearm) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Friday against the Cubs, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees have an open spot in their rotation Tuesday versus Baltimore, but Rodon lines up to pitch Friday given he made his last rehab start Saturday with High-A Hudson Valley. The right-hander threw 58 pitches in that outing, so he'll likely have some workload limitations in his Yankees debut.
Jul 1 2023Rodon threw 3.2 scoreless innings in a rehab outing with High-A Hudson Valley on Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This marked Rodon's third rehab start, and he stretched out to 58 pitches -- 38 of which went for strikes. It was also likely to be Rodon's final rehab appearance before being activated, as he's expected to make his Yankees debut July 7 against the Cubs.
Jun 28 2023Rodon (back/forearm) is set to make his next minor-league rehab start Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon has been excellent in his first two rehab outings, totaling seven innings during which he has allowed just one run and two hits while posting a 9:1 K:BB. However, the left-hander has topped out at 48 pitches, so he's not quite ready to make his Yankees debut yet. Manager Aaron Boone explained that having Rodon go Saturday will keep him on six days of rest, and that the hurler's following outing could potentially be his debut with the big club July 7 at home against the Cubs. Boone added that Rodon would likely be in the "low-60 range" in terms of pitch count for that start and that the team intends to give him "somewhat regular" rest. Though Rodon may be facing multiple limitations early on, his return should still be a boost to fantasy managers who have been stashing him over the first half of the campaign. Even with less than a full workload, Rodon has the ability to rack up strikeouts and contribute strong ratios given his 2.67 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 12.2 K/9 over 55 starts across the past two seasons.
Jun 25 2023Rodon (back/forearm) tossed four scoreless innings in a rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, allowing one hit and striking out four batters without issuing a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's second minor-league appearance went even better than his first, and he increased his pitch count slightly from 42 to 48. He threw 36 of those pitches for a strike Sunday, and he's tallied nine punchouts against just one walk and two hits while allowing only one run over seven frames in his first two rehab outings combined. Rodon appears to be on track for one more rehab start before making his Yankees debut July 5, though manager Aaron Boone wouldn't commit to that plan when asked early in the week, per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
Jun 21 2023Rodon (back/forearm) will make his next rehab start for Double-A Somerset on Sunday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon pitched well in his rehab start for the Patriots on Tuesday, allowing one run over three innings with five strikeouts. The southpaw threw 42 pitches in the outing over his three frames, and he'll likely be tasked with another innings or a higher pitch count as he looks to build up after missing the first two-plus months of the season due to his back and forearm injuries. Assuming good health, Rodon should be able to rejoin the New York rotation in the early portion of July.
Jun 20 2023Rodon (back/forearm) allowed a run on a hit and a walk over three innings in a rehab start for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon threw 42 pitches over the three frames, and 27 of them landed for strikes. It was the first competitive start for the left-hander since spring training, and while the results don't matter as much as the health, it's a reminder of his ability to miss bats when healthy. Rodon told reporters after the game that he's likely to pitch again Sunday, and that he felt strong and settled in as the start went on, Matt Kardos of MLB.com reports. He'll likely need to make at least two more rehab starts before having a chance to join the Yankees' rotation in the early part of July.
Jun 16 2023Rodon (back/forearm) is slated to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Somerset, Randy Miller of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The expectation is that Rodon will make around three starts on the farm before perhaps then debuting with the Yankees sometime in early July. He's been stalled by chronic back issues and a forearm strain here in the first half of the 2023 campaign after signing a six-year, $162 million contract with New York over the offseason.
Jun 11 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Rodon (back/forearm) will throw another live batting practice session Thursday before potentially beginning a minor-league rehab assignment, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: On Sunday, Rodon was able to face hitters for the second time since opening the season on the injured list with a left forearm strain before then experiencing chronic back issues. He seems to be moving past both injuries, as he hasn't experienced any setbacks since restarting his throwing program around mid-May. Assuming Rodon gets through the upcoming live session no worse for the wear, he could start pitching in minor-league games by the early part of next week. He'll likely require at least three rehab starts or simulated games to get stretched out enough to join the Yankees rotation.
Jun 9 2023Rodon (back/forearm) will throw at least two more live bullpen sessions before moving on to an extended rehab assignment, Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon threw his first bullpen session at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday and said it was "good," emphasizing that it was a "big step" in his recovery. The southpaw threw 20 pitches and sat at 92-94 mph with his fastball. The tentative plan is for him to throw again Sunday, according to manager Aaron Boone, and Rodon will then have at least one more live BP before embarking on a minor-league rehab stint. Considering that timeline, it appears Rodon won't make his Yankees debut until at least early July.
Jun 7 2023Rodon (back/forearm) threw 20 pitches in a live bullpen session before Wednesday's game versus Chicago on Wednesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon told Phillips he threw around 20 pitches to Oswaldo Cabrera and Jake Bauers in the session. His fastball reportedly sat 92-94 mph, and he threw all of his pitches in the outing. The next step for the southpaw is another live session, but he's unsure when that will take place. Rodon has missed all of the 2023 campaign with forearm and back trouble, and he could make his first ever start as a member of the Yankees near the end of June if he continues to make progress.
Jun 5 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Rodon (back/forearm) is slated to face hitters Wednesday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Rodon appears to be past the forearm strain that emerged early in spring training, he's been set back by an unrelated back injury that required a cortisone shot several weeks ago. The southpaw has subsequently started ramping back up and resumed mound work in late May. With throwing sessions against live hitters now in the forecast, Rodon appears to be inching closer to making his Yankees debut, though even if he encounters no further obstacles he's likely still several weeks away. It's possible that he could return in late June, though an early July target may be more feasible.
Jun 2 2023Rodon (back/forearm) was able to throw 30 pitches during a two-up session Friday, and he could face live hitters in the next few days, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Phillips notes that Rodon had two "ups" in his session, and that his fastball sat 90-93 mph. Rodon has yet to be able to make his debut in 2023 because of a forearm strain as well as a back injury. The left-hander will need to rebuild his arm strength, but if he is able to face live hitting in the next few days, it could put him on track to make his first start with the Yankees before the end of June.
Jun 1 2023Rodon (back/forearm) was transferred Thursday from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is mostly just a procedural move to clear out a 40-man roster spot for Tommy Kahnle, who is recovered from a bout of biceps tendinitis and has been activated off the 60-day IL in a corresponding move. Rodon remains without a timetable to return from his lingering back and forearm injuries, though he did recently resume throwing off a mound and has another bullpen session scheduled for Friday.
May 31 2023Rodon (back/forearm) will throw another bullpen session Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday will mark Rodon's third bullpen session since he resumed throwing May 14. While he still doesn't have a timetable in place for a return, the fact he still hasn't faced hitters yet signals that it could be a few more weeks before Rodon makes his season debut.
May 29 2023Rodon (back/forearm) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session at high intensity Monday, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon felt strong during his latest side session, which marks his second since suffering a forearm strain during spring training. According to Kirschner, the next step for Rodon will be another bullpen session later in the week. The team has yet to unveil a concrete timetable for his return.
May 26 2023Rodon (back) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It will be the first time the left-hander has thrown from the bump since he received a cortisone injection for his nagging back injury. Rodon plans to travel with the Yankees on their road trip next week as he continues his rehab. He will need a fairly lengthy rehab assignment once he's deemed game-ready and it's uncertain when he might be cleared for that.
May 23 2023Rodon (back) said Tuesday that he's hoping to begin throwing off a mound soon, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon has made good progress since receiving a cortisone injection for his nagging back injury and is almost ready to try things out from the bump. It's not clear when he might be ready for a rehab assignment, but it's going to be awhile and he will require multiple rehab starts. So, while things are trending in the right direction, it seems likely that Rodon is at least a month away from making his season debut.
May 20 2023Rodon (back) threw from 120 feet Friday and is heading to New York to continue his rehab Saturday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon has been slowly approaching a distant return from his back injury, extending from throwing 90 feet to 120 feet this past week. That being said, the chronic back issue has required a cortisone injection already and the left-hander is yet to throw off the mound. All things considered, manager Aaron Boone said that "everything went well" Friday and that the hope is that Rodon is nearing mound work. In the end, the 30-year-old remains without any concrete timetable for a return.
May 17 2023Rodon (back) advanced his throwing to 90 feet Wednesday without issue, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The cortisone injection for Rodon's chronic back issue seems to have done the trick, as he's thrown multiple times in the last several days without any problems and plans for a second injection have been scuttled. Rodon will continue to ramp up his throwing program in the coming days and will eventually try things from the mound if he continues to progress.
May 16 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Tuesday that Rodon (back) currently doesn't need a second cortisone injection, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had a "cortisone-like" shot scheduled for midway through the week, but it doesn't appear that he'll need it. Goodman also reports that Rodon threw Friday, Saturday and Monday, so he seems to be feeling better after a back injury halted his throwing program in mid-April. Though he appears to be past a forearm strain that cropped up early in spring training, the southpaw's back issue has been described as "chronic," so it's still uncertain how far away he may be from beginning a rehab assignment. As it currently stands, it seems unlikely Rodon will appear in a game with the Yankees before mid-June.
May 14 2023Manager Aaron Boone said Rodon (back) threw on flat ground from 60-to-75 feet Saturday and Sunday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old recently resumed taking part in physical activities and was quickly cleared to start up a throwing program. Rodon has been unable to pitch this season due to a forearm strain and chronic back issues, the latter of which he received a cortisone injection for in early May. The left-hander still has significant building up to do before progressing to game action, which likely means his return remains more than a month away.
May 13 2023Rodon (back) has begun physical activities over the last two days and will have his readiness to begin a throwing program assessed Saturday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Injuries have thus far prevented Rodon from getting his Yankees career off the ground, including both a forearm strain and chronic back issues. The back problem is the primary one at this point, but he's at least been able to take one small step toward his return after receiving a cortisone shot in early May. His return timeline should become clearer once it's revealed whether or not he's ready to begin throwing.
May 9 2023Rodon (back) was given a cortisone injection Tuesday and could throw off a mound as soon as this weekend, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will be shut down for 48 hours following the injection before beginning exercises Friday. If that goes well, he could be cleared to throw off a mound soon after. Rodon is battling through what's been described as a chronic back issue and the hope is the injection will help get him over the hump. He'll have to get ramped back up and begin a rehab assignment before a potential timetable for return can be considered.
May 5 2023Rodon told reporters that he's been told his back issue is "chronic," and that he can't put a timeline on a return at this point, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. "I can't put a timeline on anything," Rodon said. "I'll get this injection and I want to throw as soon as I can." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will undergo a cortisone injection in the early part of next week with the hope that it will help him return in a quicker fashion to the mound. Unfortunately, it sounds like this might not be an issue for the left-hander throughout the 2023 season, but potentially throughout his career. It sounds like Rodon now has very little chance of returning in the month of May, and it's possible he won't be able to make his debut for the Yankees until after the All-Star break.
May 3 2023Rodon (back) will undergo more testing Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon no longer has any issues with his pitching arm, but his back is still bothering him and the Yankees are trying to get a better handle on it. Based on how Thursday's tests go, they should have a new plan on how to best attack Rodon's rehab.
May 2 2023Rodon's back is still bothering him and affecting his mechanics, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told Chris Kirschner of The Athletic on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's pitching arm is a non-issue at this point, but he's been unable to get over the hump with a back problem which first cropped up in early April. Boone said the team is still discussing how best to proceed with Rodon's rehab. The lefty has thrown a few bullpen sessions, but it's possible he might be shut down for some time again.
Apr 30 2023Rodon (forearm/back) tossed 22 pitches in a bullpen session Friday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was shut down from throwing in mid-April after experiencing continued discomfort in his back. The issue appears to have subsided, as the left-hander was able to throw off a mound in Friday's session. The good news is that the forearm strain that initially sent him to the IL in late March appears to be a thing of the past, and Rodon could up his pitch count and intensity in additional bullpen sessions before eventually embarking on a rehab assignment. However, he appears to still be multiple weeks away from a return even in a best-case scenario.
Apr 2 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced Sunday that Rodon (forearm) could pitch with hitters in the box for his next session, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will have another "two-up" session the next time he's on the mound, and while it won't be a live bullpen, it's another step forward for the southpaw. The 30-year-old hurler is expected to miss close to a month while recovering from a left forearm strain, but he could make his debut with the Yankees late in April or the early part of May.
Mar 30 2023The Yankees placed Rodon (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though he'll open his tenure with the Yankees on the shelf with a left forearm strain, Rodon is already starting to ramp up again. He most recently completed a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday, and he could be cleared to resume facing hitters as soon as next week once he gets another side session or two under his belt. Rodon is still likely to require multiple rehab starts or simulated games to get fully stretched out for starting duties, so he shouldn't be expected to enter the Yankees rotation until late April at the soonest.
Mar 18 2023Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Saturday that Rodon (forearm) is feeling good after throwing, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was able to throw Friday, and he continues to make strong progress from the forearm muscle strain he was diagnosed with March 9. The left-hander is still a lock to begin the 2023 campaign on the injured list, but there's a good chance he'll only miss two-to-three starts, which would be a major win for fantasy players and for a Yankees team that has dealt with significant injury concerns during the Grapefruit League season.
Mar 15 2023Rodon's rehab from a forearm muscle strain is going well, and he could miss just two or three starts if he doesn't have any setbacks once he resumes throwing, Randy Miller of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon underwent an MRI last week, which revealed that he's dealing with a mild muscle strain and that the UCL in his left arm is intact. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that the veteran hurler could begin a throwing program "hopefully soon," indicating that Rodon has reached "a point that he needed to get to from a range of motion standpoint." Boone added that he's optimistic about the injury and its long-term implications, which should alleviate the fears of Yankees fans (and managers who have drafted Rodon in fantasy) about the forearm strain being a devastating issue. In fact, if all goes well moving forward, Rodon could make his regular-season pitching debut sometime around mid-April.
Mar 9 2023Yankees general manager Brian Cashman announced Thursday that Rodon has been diagnosed with a left forearm strain and will open the season on the injured list, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will be in no-throw mode for at least the next 7-10 days and is seemingly in danger of being sidelined through all of April. The strain is being called mild, per Cashman, but this qualifies as another tough blow to a Yankees rotation which already lost Frankie Montas to shoulder surgery in February. Rodon joined New York on a blockbuster six-year, $162 million contract back in December. Clarke Schmidt seems likely to take Rodon's spot in the season-opening starting mix.
Mar 6 2023Rodon hurled two-plus innings in a Grapefruit League game against Atlanta on Sunday, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's first game action in a Yankees uniform went about as poorly as possible, as the southpaw was shelled by Atlanta's bats. Three of the hits against him went for extra bases, and both Matt Olson and Austin Riley took Rodon deep. The third inning was particularly brutal for the New York newcomer, as he allowed five runners to reach base without recording an out. Of course, this was still just an exhibition contest, so fantasy managers who have drafted Rodon as an anchor of their rotation need not despair. He'll have plenty of time to straighten things out ahead of Opening Day.
Dec 15 2022Rodon signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Yankees on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon bet on himself by signing a one-year contract with San Francisco for the 2022 season. He delivered an excellent 2.88 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 237:52 K:BB across 178 innings and will now be rewarded with a lucrative long-term deal. In addition to his strong ratios and strikeout total, Rodon's inning total was also notable, as he overcame shoulder and elbow injuries from earlier in his career to prove he's capable of carrying a heavy workload. He'll join Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes (groin), and Luis Severino to form an imposing rotation in New York.
Nov 6 2022Rodon exercised his 2023 opt-out clause and became a free agent Sunday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon signed a two-year deal with San Francisco ahead of the 2022 campaign but will seek out a new contract after he posted a 2.88 ERA, 237:52 K:BB and 1.03 WHIP in 178 innings during his first season with the Giants. The southpaw figures to draw plenty of interest in free agency ahead of his age-30 season.
Oct 4 2022Rodon was feeling under the weather Tuesday and was placed on the 15-day injured list, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was originally slated to start Tuesday but instead had his final turn through the rotation skipped with the Giants already eliminated from postseason contention, and the team opted to move him to the IL to free up a spot on the active roster. Alex Cobb is pitching against the Padres in his place. Rodon closed out the year with a 2.88 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 237:52 K:BB across a career-high 178 innings, and he's likely to decline his player option for 2023 and become a free agent during the offseason.
Oct 3 2022Rodon may not make his final start of the regular season due to workload management, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manger Gabe Kapler noted Monday that there's a possibility the ace won't make his final scheduled start of the season Tuesday against the Padres, noting his increase in workload during the 2022 campaign. Rodon owns a 14-8 record with a 2.88 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with a 237:52 K:BB across 178 frames, a career high for the southpaw. The team has yet to make a final decision, however.
Sep 29 2022Rodon (14-8) earned the win Thursday over the Rockies, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits across six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon recorded his 11th double-digit strikeout tally of the season in a dominant start, one of his best of the second half of the campaign. He finishes September having allowing seven runs (six earned) across 26.2 innings through five starts this month. The ace southpaw has a 2.88 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 237:52 K:BB across 178 innings through 31 starts overall. He tentatively lines up to make his final start of the season next week in San Diego.
Sep 23 2022Rodon didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 6-5 win against Arizona, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon permitted a two-run Stone Garrett home run in the third inning and put two on in the fifth before being pulled, with both runners coming around to score. The poor start is only the 29-year-old's second in his last 10 turns, during which he's pitched to a 2.25 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 56 innings. Rodon possesses a 2.98 ERA and 1.05 WHIP to go along with the second most strikeouts in MLB at 227 across 30 starts.
Sep 19 2022Rodon's next start will be moved to Friday against the Diamondbacks due to a blister and cracked nail on his left hand, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was initially believed that Rodon was on track to make his scheduled start Tuesday in Colorado, but the team has decided to exercise caution by giving him a few extra days to recover. The Giants have yet to name Tuesday's starter following this change of plans.
Sep 17 2022Rodon (finger) looks to be good to go for his next start, which lines up to come Tuesday in Colorado, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon left his last start against Atlanta after just five innings and 71 pitches due to a blister and a cracked nail, but it doesn't look as though the issue will force him to miss a turn in the rotation. That's excellent news for the Giants and for those with Rodon on their fantasy teams, as Rodon's dominant season makes him a strong choice even at Coors Field.
Sep 14 2022Rodon (13-8) earned the win against Atlanta on Wednesday after giving up one unearned run across five innings, but he exited the contest due to a blister and a cracked nail on one of his fingers, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. The left-hander struck out eight and allowed two hits and one walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon threw 47 of 71 pitches for strikes through five innings before departing the contest, as the finger issues didn't diminish his effectiveness. The 29-year-old's next turn through the rotation tentatively lines up for Tuesday in Colorado, and manager Gabe Kapler believes Rodon will be good to go for that outing.
Sep 9 2022Rodon (12-8) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out 11 and taking a loss against the Cubs. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from Yan Gomes' two-run shot in the second inning, Rodon turned in a dominant performance in the tough-luck loss. The 29-year-old southpaw has recorded double-digit strikeouts in four of his last five starts, improving his K:BB to 212:48 through 162.2 frames. Rodon has given up two or fewer runs in seven of his last eight outings and he's now sporting a 2.93 ERA on the year. He's expected to face Atlanta at home next week.
Sep 4 2022Rodon took a no-decision Sunday versus the Phillies, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out 10 over six scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon did his part, throwing 70 of his 106 pitches for strikes. John Brebbia couldn't hold the lead in the eighth inning, denying Rodon the win, though the Giants ultimately prevailed with a walkoff in the ninth. Rodon has recorded double-digit strikeouts in five of his last eight starts, and he's allowed more than two runs only twice in that span. The southpaw has a 2.92 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 201:47 K:BB through 157.1 innings across 27 starts this season. He's projected for a road start at Wrigley Field during next weekend's three-game series versus the Cubs.
Aug 30 2022Rodon (12-7) took the loss against San Diego on Monday, pitching four innings and allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon got into an early hole, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in the first inning. He bounced back with two straight scoreless frames but gave up two more runs in the fourth and was subsequently pulled. The left-hander tied a season high with four walks in the contest and managed only two punchouts after reaching double-digit strikeouts in each of his prior two starts. Rodon entered Monday on a roll, having posted a 1.44 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 41:2 K:BB over his previous five starts.
Aug 23 2022Rodon (12-6) earned a win after he pitched seven innings, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out 10 in Tuesday's victory over the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was in full command Tuesday, tossing six scoreless innings before the Tigers finally scratched a run across in the bottom of the seventh, accounting for all the damage against him. The left-hander registered double-digit punchouts for the second straight start and fourth time in six outings. Rodon has now compiled three consecutive quality starts, allowing four runs over 19 innings while striking out 28 batters over that stretch. He now owns a 2.81 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 189 strikeouts over 147.1 frames in 25 outings this season.
Aug 18 2022Rodon did not factor in the decision against Arizona on Wednesday despite allowing only one run on two hits and two walks while striking out 11 batters over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon exited after six frames staked to a one-run lead, but an eighth-inning Diamondbacks comeback removed his chance at a win. Despite the final outcome, the southpaw was dominant in the outing, racking up 19 swinging strikes and registering double-digit punchouts for the third time in his past five starts. Rodon has posted a 2.67 ERA, 0.73 WHIP and 41:4 K:BB over 30.1 innings during that stretch. He ranks third in the majors with 179 strikeouts on the campaign.
Aug 12 2022Rodon (11-6) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven over six innings, earning the win over the Pirates on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was able to limit the damage to a pair of solo home runs. The southpaw has won three straight starts, racking up 20 strikeouts without walking a batter across 18.1 innings in that span. The ace has a 2.95 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 168:39 K:BB through 134.1 innings in 23 starts overall. Rodon is tentatively projected for a favorable home start versus the Diamondbacks next week.
Aug 7 2022Rodon (10-6) gave up one earned run on five hits and no walks while striking out three over 5.1 innings to earn the win in a 7-3 victory over the Athletics on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon continued his excellent 2022 campaign by holding the Athletics to only one run on a Sean Murphy single. The performance wasn't his most dominant, but he did enough to pick up his 10th win of the season while lowering his ERA back under 3.00. The hard-throwing lefty now boasts a 161:39 K:BB in 128.1 innings this season to go along with an ERA of 2.95. He tentatively lines up for a favorable matchup at home against the Pirates in his next expected start.
Jul 31 2022Rodon (9-6) earned the win during Sunday's 4-0 shutout of the Cubs, allowing two hits while striking out 10 in seven scoreless innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In what may have been a final audition prior to Tuesday's trade deadline, Rodon completely shut down Chicago's offense -- he permitted singles in the first and fourth with neither baserunner making it past first base -- and retired the final 10 batters he faced, five via strikeout. The hard-throwing lefty fired 64 of 98 pitches for strikes with 15 of the swinging variety, and he concludes July with 53 strikeouts in six starts to pull within four of MLB leader Gerrit Cole at 158 on the season. If Rodon remains a Giant, he's slated to take the mound again next weekend against Oakland.
Jul 26 2022Rodon (8-6) took the loss during Tuesday's 7-3 defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks, allowing five runs on three hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon pitched well Tuesday -- surrendering only six baserunners -- but was stung by the home run, permitting a Sergio Alcantara two-run shot in the second inning and a Christian Walker three-run homer in the third. Despite the loss, Rodon struck out at least seven batters for the fifth straight start and has now fanned 43 batters across 30 frames during the span. The 29-year-old carries a 3.18 ERA and 1.12 WHIP into his next start, currently lined up for Sunday Night Baseball against the Cubs.
Jul 21 2022Rodon allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had been dealing with a blood blister and a split nail on his pitching hand prior to the All-Star break, but he opted not to throw in the Tuesday's All-Star Game and instead used the time off to try to recover. Though he was able to start San Francisco's first game following the exhibition contest, it's not clear if the issues affected him. What is clear is that the southpaw had one of his poorest outings of the season, giving up just his fifth homer of the campaign -- a solo shot by Freddie Freeman in the first inning -- and allowing five runs for only the second time through 19 starts. Still, it wasn't a totally inept appearance for the southpaw, as he racked up 17 swinging strikes and seven punchouts against one of the league's best offenses.
Jul 20 2022Rodon (finger) is listed as the Giants' starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Following his most recent start last Thursday against the Brewers, Rodon relayed that he was dealing with a blood blister and a split nail to a finger on his pitching hand. Though neither issue was viewed as a major concern, Rodon still chose to err on the side of caution by withdrawing from Tuesday's All-Star Game and using the break to heal up. He appears to be feeling fine as the Giants begin their second-half schedule, as the team could have pushed his next start back to later in the four-game series with the Dodgers if there was truly any worry about his health.
Jul 16 2022Rodon has both a blood blister and a split nail, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's possible the issues explain why Rodon allowed eight hits in five innings against the Brewers on Thursday, though he struck out seven batters and only allowed one run, so it's hard to say he pitched poorly. The lefty won't pitch in the All-Star Game as a result of his finger troubles, but it's not yet clear whether either issue will delay his first start of the second half.
Jul 14 2022Rodon allowed a run on eight hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings in a no-decision versus the Brewers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a 112-pitch complete game his last time out, Rodon was significantly less efficient Thursday. He threw 68 of 99 pitches for strikes, but the 11 baserunners he allowed matched a season high. The southpaw was able to limit the damage to an Andrew McCutchen sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Rodon has a 2.66 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 131:35 K:BB through 105 innings in 18 starts, and he'll be heading to the All-Star Game next week in Los Angeles.
Jul 9 2022Rodon (8-5) earned the win Saturday over the Padres. He allowed one run on three hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts in nine innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: For the ninth time in 17 starts, Rodon limited the opposition to one or fewer runs. This was the third complete game of his career, and his first since his no hitter on April 14, 2021. The southpaw dialed up double-digit strikeouts for the fourth time this year, and he threw 79 of 112 pitches for strikes. He's pitched to an excellent 2.70 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 124:32 K:BB through 100 innings. Rodon will likely get one more start before the All-Star break, which is currently projected as a home game versus the Brewers next week.
Jul 5 2022Rodon (7-5) took the loss Monday, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in an 8-3 loss to the Diamondbacks. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw recovered after looked shaky in the early innings, but the Giants' offense couldn't climb out of the hole, and their bullpen kept digging after Rodon left the mound. He tossed 63 of 101 pitches for strikes while seeing his quality start streak end at four. Rodon will take a 2.87 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 112:30 K:BB through 91 innings into his next outing.
Jun 28 2022Rodon (7-4) allowed a run on seven hits and struck out four without walking a batter in six innings, earning the win Tuesday versus the Tigers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon turned in five shutout frames before Miguel Cabrera tagged him for an RBI single in the sixth. Over his last 27 innings, Rodon has allowed two runs while posting a 30:6 K:BB, winning three of his four starts in that span. The ace lowered his ERA to 2.62 with a 1.09 WHIP and 105:28 K:BB in 86 innings overall. He's lined up for a road start in Arizona next week as he looks to stay hot into July.
Jun 23 2022Rodon allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 batters over seven innings against Atlanta on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon kept Atlanta off the scoreboard for six innings before surrendering a run in the seventh. He departed after that frame with a lead, but the Giants' bullpen blew the save in the ninth, tagging Rodon with a no-decision. The lefty hurler has been on quite a roll of late, allowing only one run while striking out 26 batters over 21 innings covering his past three starts. He ranks fifth in the majors with 101 punchouts on the campaign.
Jun 17 2022Rodon (6-4) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out eight over eight scoreless innings to earn the win Friday over the Pirates. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was nearly untouchable, facing the minimum number of batters through four innings with the help of a double play. He's now logged 14 scoreless innings across his last two starts, both wins, after a five-start stretch without a victory. The southpaw has a 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 91:27 K:BB in 73 innings across 13 starts overall, and he's projected to make his next turn through the rotation in Atlanta next week.
Jun 12 2022Rodon (5-4) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Dodgers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was the second time Rodon's kept runs off the board in his 12 starts this season, and he hadn't recorded eight or more strikeouts since May 9. The 29-year-old threw 64 of his 98 pitches for strikes and efficiently limited the Dodgers' chances to generate offense. Rodon has a 3.18 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 83:25 K:BB through 65 innings in 12 starts. He'll look to build off of this start next weekend in Pittsburgh.
Jun 7 2022Rodon allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in four innings, taking a no-decision Tuesday versus the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was brutally inefficient, needing 98 pitches to complete four frames in his second-shortest start of the year. He's still allowed more than two runs only twice in his 11 outings this season, but the southpaw has now gone without a win in his last five games. He's at a 3.51 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 75:22 K:BB through 59 innings this season. Rodon will aim to pitcher deeper into his next start, tentatively scheduled to be a home showdown with the Dodgers this weekend.
Jun 2 2022Rodon didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 6-5 loss to the Phillies, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw fired 64 of 98 pitches for strikes and was still the pitcher of record when the Giants took a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but the bullpen quickly squandered it. Rodon has seen his season-opening hot streak fade and has completed six innings only once in his last four starts, leaving him with a 3.44 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 70:21 K:BB through 55 innings.
May 27 2022Rodon (4-4) was charged with the loss Friday against the Reds after allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks across 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander threw 58 of his 99 pitches for strikes and generated only six swinging strikes, which resulted in his lowest punchout total of the season. Rodon had a 4-1 record with a 1.80 ERA and 53:12 K:BB through his first six starts of the season, but he's now lost his past three outings and has a 7.80 ERA and 12:8 K:BB in those defeats.
May 22 2022Rodon (4-3) took the loss Saturday as the Giants were downed 2-1 by the Padres, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The four free passes were a season high for Rodon, but he still tossed 68 of 100 pitches for strikes in his fifth quality start of the year. The southpaw will take a 3.43 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 62:17 K:BB through 44.2 innings into his next outing.
May 15 2022Rodon (4-2) was handed the loss during Sunday's 15-6 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon struggled from the start, surrendering four runs in the first inning and four more in the fourth before being pulled in what was easily his worst outing. The eight runs surrendered exceed the seven the 29-year-old had given up through his first six starts, nearly doubling his ERA from 1.80 to 3.49 in the process. Also of concern is the three strikeouts Rodon has tallied in two of his last three outings, though a 12-strikeout performance is sandwiched between. He'll look to get back on track against San Diego next weekend.
May 10 2022Rodon (4-1) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out 12 over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander had Colorado batters guessing throughout the contest, racking up 23 swinging strikes and tying a season high with 12 punchouts. He gave up a pair of runs in the fifth inning but didn't allow any extra-base hits and kept the Rockies off the scoreboard in each of his other five frames. Rodon's ERA actually increased to 1.80 despite the quality start, and he pushed his record to 4-1 on the campaign. He has been everything the Giants hoped he would be when they acquired him in the offseason, as he leads MLB with 53 strikeouts while stepping into the ace role on the staff. He'll look to keep rolling in a projected start in St. Louis this weekend.
May 3 2022Rodon (3-1) took the loss during Tuesday's 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon pitched well despite the loss Tuesday, surrendering both runs on a Chris Taylor single in the second inning and recording his third quality start in five turns. The two earned runs mark a season high while the five total baserunners match one as Rodon has now permitted two walks in every start as well as three hits in all but one. The biggest difference Tuesday was the decline to three strikeouts from an average of 9.5 through his first four turns. Rodon will most likely make another start this weekend against St. Louis.
Apr 26 2022Rodon (3-0) registered the win during Tuesday's 8-2 victory over Oakland, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon brought his top-tier stuff for the fourth time in as many games this season and cruised to an easy victory following six strong innings. The first-year-Giant has now struck out at least eight batters while allowing no more than one run in all four starts this season and ranks among the league leaders in most major pitching categories, with his 38 strikeouts leading second-place Corbin Burnes by five. Rodon will look to carry over his exceptional April performance on Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Apr 24 2022Rodon is starting Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon initially lined up to start Monday's road matchup in Milwaukee, but he'll get an extra day of rest while Sam Long takes the mound against the Brewers. Rodon has earned wins in two of his three starts this year and has posted a 1.06 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in 17 innings.
Apr 20 2022Rodon (2-0) earned the win over the Mets on Wednesday, completing five scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon continued to impress in his third start for San Francisco, earning his second victory with five scoreless frames. The southpaw kept Mets hitters on their toes throughout the outing, inducing 19 swinging strikes. He has yet to allow more than three hits in an appearance and has struck out at least eight batters in each of his starts thus far. Perhaps the only disappointing development from a fantasy perspective is that the veteran hurler ran his pitch count up to 95 through five innings Wednesday, preventing him from going out for the sixth with the chance for a quality start. Rodon is building upon last season's breakout campaign with a 1.06 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 29:6 K:BB through 17 frames. His next start is expected to take place in Milwaukee on Monday.
Apr 15 2022Rodon (1-0) allowed one run on two hits and two walks over seven innings Friday, striking out nine and earning a win over the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon tossed six shutout frames, yielding just one hit, one walk and a hit batter during that stretch. The only damage against him was a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Owen Miller. Rodon forced nine whiffs and got 22 called strikes, throwing 90 total pitches in the outing. The 29-year-old is sporting a 21:4 K:BB and a 1.50 ERA through 12 innings. He's expected to face the Mets in New York his next time out.
Apr 10 2022Rodon didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Marlins, giving up one run on three hits and two walks over five innings while striking out 12. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his Giants debut after signing a two-year deal with the club in the offseason, Rodon mowed down the Marlins over 89 pitches (61 strikes), and the only run he allowed came on a single, a throwing error and a wild pitch on a third strike to Jorge Soler. Rodon faces a familiar foe from his White Sox days in his next scheduled start, a road outing Friday in Cleveland.
Mar 11 2022Rodon signed a two-year, $44 million contract with the Giants on Friday which includes an opt-out after the first season, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deal places Rodon in one of the best possible landing spots for any pitcher, as the Giants play in a pitcher-friendly park and have earned a reputation for getting the most out of their starters in recent years. That said, Rodon didn't seem to need much help making the most of his talents in 2021, as he's coming off a season in which he rode a 34.6 percent strikeout rate to a 2.37 ERA. Health is easily his most significant question mark, as he's battled arm troubles throughout his career and was used very cautiously by the White Sox down the stretch last season while he managed shoulder trouble.
Nov 7 2021Rodon didn't receive a qualifying offer from the White Sox, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon bounced back in 2021 and posted a 2.37 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 132.2 innings across 24 starts for the White Sox. In spite of his career-best season, the 28-year-old will become a free agent without any draft pick penalty attached.
Oct 13 2021Rodon (0-1) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Astros on Tuesday in Game 4 of the ALDS. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As Russell Dorsey of The Chicago Sun-Times notes, Rodon was pitching at less than 100 percent after arm and shoulder trouble crept up over the final couple months of the regular season. You couldn't tell early on, as Rodon was pumping fastballs in the high 90s and looked dominant through two innings, though he was eventually touched up a bit in the third before his exit. This may very well have been Rodon's last start in a White Sox uniform; he's never going to be a workhorse, but Rodon pitched brilliantly in his 132.2 innings during the regular season and will likely have several multi-year offers in free agency.
Oct 11 2021Rodon and the White Sox won't face the Astros on Monday in Game 4 of the ALDS after the contest was postponed due to inclement weather in Chicago, Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Game 4 will be made up Tuesday at 1:07 p.m. ET before the series shifts back to Houston for Game 5 on Wednesday. Per Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago, White Sox manager Tony La Russa said the White Sox won't adjust their rotation as a result of the postponement, as Rodon will simply be pushed back a day in the schedule to start Tuesday.
Oct 10 2021Rodon will start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Astros on Monday if the White Sox win Sunday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was hindered by a shoulder injury late in the regular season, but he's optimistic about his health ahead of Monday's contest. The southpaw made six starts across the final two months of the 2021 campaign and posted a 1.93 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 28 innings during that time.
Oct 9 2021The White Sox are optimistic that Rodon will be able to start a potential Game 4 of the ALDS against the Astros on Monday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon made Chicago's ALDS roster despite dealing with a shoulder injury late in the regular season. The White Sox dropped the first two games of the series, but the southpaw will likely be in line to start Game 4 if the team wins Sunday's matchup.
Oct 7 2021Rodon was included on the White Sox's ALDS roster, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon dealt with a shoulder issue late in the regular season and wasn't guaranteed a spot on the ALDS roster, but he'll be available for the series against Houston. It wouldn't be surprising to see the southpaw claim a starting role during the postseason, especially after Dallas Keuchel was left off the roster for the best-of-five series.
Oct 3 2021Manager Tony La Russa said he doesn't know if Rodon will be on the ALDS roster, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The lefty will throw a bullpen Tuesday, after which the team will evaluate him and his shoulder. He threw five scoreless innings Wednesday but displayed unusually low velocity, casting doubt on his ability to compete with a lineup like Houston's in the postseason. Updates on his bullpen and potential availability going forward should become clear by Thursday.
Sep 30 2021Rodon (13-5) allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four over five scoreless innings to earn the win over the Reds on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was making his first start since Sept. 20, when he threw just three innings and 69 pitches before departing with shoulder discomfort. Though his results Wednesday were solid enough, the lefty's velocity was down noticeably, making it difficult to feel optimistic about his prospects heading into the postseason. Moreover, Rodon hasn't pitched more than five innings over his last eight outings, so the White Sox are unlikely to count on him to be a workhorse in the playoffs.
Sep 27 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Rodon (arm) will start Wednesday's game against the Reds in Chicago after the southpaw completed a bullpen session Monday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: La Russa was hopeful that a week and a half away from game action would provide sufficient time for Rodon to overcome his bout with left arm soreness, but the skipper noted that the All-Star's side session was merely "OK." Rodon still proved healthy enough in the workout to gain clearance for his final start of the regular season, but it wouldn't be surprising if he had a short leash Wednesday as the White Sox aim to keep him fresh for the playoffs. With that in mind, Rodon isn't necessarily the must-start option this week that his stellar 2.47 ERA over 23 outings this season would normally make him.
Sep 21 2021Rodon (arm) is expected to make his next start Sept. 29 against the Reds, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon is having an excellent season, striking out 35.1 percent of opposing batters en route to a 2.47 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 23 starts. He's being handled very cautiously down the stretch as the White Sox try to keep him healthy for the playoffs, getting eight and nine days of rest prior to his previous two starts. He exited his start Monday against the Tigers after just three innings due to left arm soreness, and it looks as though the White Sox will give him a similar length of time off before his next trip to the mound. That means he'll make at most one more start before the end of the regular season.
Sep 20 2021Rodon experienced soreness during Monday's start against Detroit, and the team is uncertain as to when he'll make his next start, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. He didn't factor into the decision after allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks while striking out six over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox have been cautious with their southpaw down the stretch of the regular season, but Rodon still hasn't felt quite right out on the bump of late. Skipper Tony La Russa stated Rodon will need to be examined and reassessed following Monday's outing, per Fegan, which will likely take place over the next few days. The outcome of this assessment will determine the date of his next start. Interestingly enough, Rodon described his own soreness after the contest as "normal soreness" and "nothing crazy," per Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago.
Sep 16 2021Rodon will next take the mound sometime during the White Sox's upcoming series against the Tigers, which runs from Monday through Wednesday, Maddie Lee of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox have been giving Rodon extra rest between his starts as they look to keep him fresh for the postseason. The decision seems to be a sensible one, as he's thrown 124.2 innings already this season after throwing a combined 42.1 over the previous two years. He'll get anywhere between nine and 11 days off between starts this time around and is only expected to make two more total starts before the end of the regular season.
Sep 12 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said it's uncertain when Rodon will pitch next, Brian Sandalow of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Those were La Russa's comments prior to Friday's win over Boston, which the manager described as "very important" for many reasons. Apparently, the team would like to evaluate how Rodon feels following the start to determine his next outing. That the manager is considering a six-man rotation, per Sandalow, is a sign that he wants to build in an extra day of rest for Rodon, who is 7-2 with a 1.69 ERA with six or more days of rest. The White Sox don't have another open date until Sept. 27, and Rodon is up to 124.2 innings after throwing 42.1 combined over the last two seasons. Questions about his durability arose last month, when Rodon experienced a drop in velocity and missed time due to shoulder fatigue. The left-hander is tentatively scheduled to pitch Friday on six days rest, and by adding Reynaldo Lopez to the rotation, Rodon could get an extra day for the remainder of the season.
Sep 10 2021Rodon (shoulder) (12-5) allowed one run on three hits over five innings Friday, striking out seven and earning a win over Boston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon made his first appearance since Sep. 1 after nursing a slight shoulder injury. He threw 62-of-86 pitches for strikes and the only blemish on his outing was a solo homer by Bobby Dalbec in the fifth inning. Over his last four starts, the 28-year-old southpaw has given up just four runs over 20 innings (1.80 ERA) with a 26:4 K:BB. Rodon will carry a 2.38 ERA into his projected start against the Angels at home next week.
Sep 9 2021Rodon (shoulder) is expected to rejoin the rotation and start Friday against Boston, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon hasn't been placed on the injured list, but he's been sidelined since Sept. 1 while dealing with a sore shoulder. The White Sox will want to be careful with him given his injury history, and they can afford to exercise caution given that they lead their division by 11 games However, it looks as though he'll be ready to go after missing just one turn in the rotation.
Sep 7 2021Rodon (shoulder) will play catch Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Tony La Russa said Tuesday that Rodon is "penciled in" to start one of the team's weekend games against the Red Sox, but a final decision on his status hasn't been reached. The White Sox will likely get a better idea of the southpaw's availability based on how he feels after Tuesday's throwing session.
Sep 5 2021Rodon will not start against Oakland this week due to fatigue and soreness, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Tony La Russa said Rodon might be able to pitch next weekend against the Red Sox. Given Chicago's sizable division lead, they figure to exercise extreme caution with their dominant lefty, suggesting a trip to the injured list is not out of the question for Rodon.
Sep 1 2021Rodon (11-5) picked up the win Wednesday versus the Pirates, tossing five innings of one-run ball on five hits, a walk and five strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old was able to limit the Pirates to only one run, an RBI single in the fifth inning by Cole Tucker. The left-hander has been having his innings limited by the team as they are gearing up for the playoffs and he only threw 77 pitches in this one. On the year, he has a sparkling 2.41 ERA to go along with 11 wins. He projects to start next on the road Wednesday against Oakland.
Aug 26 2021Rodon (10-5) allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three across five innings to earn the win Thursday against the Blue Jays. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was activated from the injured list immediately prior to his start to end a two-week absence. The team limited his pitch count, as he was pulled after 67 pitches and five innings despite Rodon having a 7-2 lead. That type of workload management could continue through the final month of the season, as Rodon pitched a combined 42.1 innings between the 2019 and 2020 campaigns. Given that he's already tossed 114.1 frames in 2021 and the White Sox are headed for the playoffs, it's logical to assume the team will prioritize Rodon's health and effectiveness in the postseason.
Aug 25 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Rodon (shoulder) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Thursday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though La Russa expressed some uncertainty about Rodon's availability for the series in Toronto, the southpaw apparently alleviated any concerns about his health by completing a bullpen session earlier this week without issue. Chicago could look to monitor Rodon's workload in his first start back from the IL, but since he was only on the shelf for two and a half weeks, he shouldn't need much time to get fully ramped up. Rodon's impending return will likely result in Reynaldo Lopez moving back to the bullpen.
Aug 22 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Rodon (shoulder) will start Thursday "if he does a couple more things," Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: La Russa did not elaborate on what Rodon needs to do between now and Thursday for reinstatement from the injured list. If the manager decides Rodon is not ready, then Dallas Keuchel will start against the Blue Jays. Rodon has thrown 109.2 innings in 2021 after throwing just 42.1 the previous two seasons.
Aug 16 2021Rodon (shoulder) felt good after throwing from 90 feet Monday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon landed on the injured list with left shoulder fatigue Wednesday, but he was able to resume throwing several days later. The southpaw underwent an MRI on Sunday that came back clean, and he isn't expected to require a lengthy absence. The White Sox are hopeful that Rodon will be able to return to the rotation during the team's upcoming series against Toronto, which begins Aug. 23.
Aug 15 2021Manager Tony La Russa said Sunday that Rodon's medical examination came back clean and confirmed shoulder soreness, Vinnie Duber of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon is still expected to miss more than the 10-day minimum after landing on the injured list Wednesday, but according to James Fegan of The Athletic, La Russa indicated indicated the lefty could return during the upcoming four-game series in Toronto, which begins Aug. 23. Reynaldo Lopez is scheduled to start Tuesday and figures to remain in the rotation until Rodon is cleared to return.
Aug 11 2021White Sox manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday that he's not overly optimistic Rodon (shoulder) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Aug. 18, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had been scheduled to start Thursday's "Field of Dreams" game against the Yankees in Iowa before he was moved to the IL on Wednesday after experiencing left shoulder fatigue/soreness coming out of his most recent throwing session. The southpaw will return to Chicago to undergo further evaluation, and the White Sox expect to have a better idea about the extent of his injury within the next couple of days. La Russa was careful to note that while he isn't counting on Rodon next week, he's not overly concerned about the All-Star's injury either, so fantasy managers are advised to hold Rodon until more news about his health becomes available.
Aug 8 2021Rodon (9-5) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 11 over five innings to earn the win over the Cubs on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon entered on a two-game losing skid and failed to pitch more than four innings in each loss. He was also suffering from reduced fastball velocity, so the White Sox gave him extended rest for this start. Pitching on eight days' rest, Rodon struck out the side in the first inning, using a fastball that reached 98.5 mph. It was a stark difference from his previous two starts, when the left-hander allowed runs in the first and second innings. Rodon's next turn in the rotation is due Thursday at home against the Yankees.
Jul 30 2021Rodon (8-5) allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four over four innings, taking the loss against Kansas City on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon suffered his second consecutive loss and experienced a drop in velocity in the early innings for a second straight start. His fastball sat at 92-93 mph the first couple of innings before picking up to 97-98 in the final two. "Started slow, similar to Milwaukee," Rodon told Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. "I don't really like to make excuses. But, it's just part of the game. Just got to make some adjustments, feel better this next start and get it going, get going faster." Other warning signs are a season-low four strikeouts and the 104.2 innings Rodon has thrown is his most since 2018. The left-hander threw a combined 42.1 innings in 2019-20. With a day off coming next Monday, Rodon will get an extra day of rest leading up to his next start, which is expected to be Wednesday at home against the Royals.
Jul 24 2021Rodon (8-4) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts through four innings, taking the loss in a 6-1 defeat to the Brewers on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Saturday night was a battle for Rodon from start to finish. After allowing home runs to Kolten Wong and Tyrone Taylor in the first two innings, he took a comebacker off the inside of his right wrist and walked in a run with the bases loaded in the fourth. After needing 79 pitches to scrape through four innings, Tony La Russa had seen enough. This clunker from Rodon comes on the back of one of his best starts of the season, in which he pitched seven innings of shutout ball and struck out 10 against the Astros. While the southpaw had shown no signs of slowing down prior to Saturday night, it might be time to talk about his workload. After throwing 34.2 innings in 2019 and only 7.2 innings in 2020, Rodon is approaching the 100-inning mark already in 2021. He has thrown more than 90 pitches in 15 of his 17 starts and more than 100 in eight. Rodon's next start should provide some more insight as to how he is feeling at this point in the season.
Jul 18 2021Rodon (8-3) held the Astros to one hit and struck out 10 over seven innings Sunday to record his second straight win. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon mastered the Astros' lineup, giving up a third-inning single to Abraham Toro, and that was it. Two relievers combined for two perfect innings to preserve the win, Chicago's second straight after losing the first five meetings with Houston, a team they may very well need to face come October. It was the 12th time over 16 starts that Rodon has allowed one earned run or fewer. The left-hander brings a tidy 2.14 ERA into his next start, which is likely to come Saturday on the road against Milwaukee.
Jul 7 2021Rodon (7-3) allowed one run on seven hits and struck out eight over six innings to earn the win over Minnesota on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: An animated Rodon walked off the mound following the sixth inning after getting out of a jam. The Twins touched him for their lone run earlier in the inning, but the recently named All-Star punched out the final two batters. Rodon has struck out at least eight batters in nine consecutive starts and ends the first half with a 2.31 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. Next up for Rodon is next Tuesday's All-Star Game. The rotation post-break has not been set, but it's a good bet Rodon pitches the following weekend.
Jul 1 2021Rodon allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out nine across five innings Thursday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon held the Twins scoreless through four innings, but fell apart in his final frame to sour his outing. He didn't allow a home run, but was still hit around for two doubles and two singles while also throwing a wild pitch. However, he balanced those struggles with nine strikeouts, his eighth consecutive start with at least eight punchouts. On the campaign, Rodon has a 2.37 ERA with 122 strikeouts across 83.2 frames.
Jun 25 2021Rodon (6-3) took the loss versus Seattle on Friday. He allowed three runs on five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon continues to pile up strikeouts -- he's fanned eight or more batters in each of his last seven starts. The southpaw gave up multiple runs for the first time in four starts in June and just the fourth time in 13 outings all year. He's been excellent with a 2.06 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 113:24 K:BB across 78.2 innings this year. Rodon will look to bounce back next week versus Minnesota.
Jun 18 2021Rodon allowed one run on three hits and three walks over seven innings in Friday's loss to Houston. He struck out eight and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon cruised through four perfect innings to start the game before running into trouble in the fifth. He loaded the bases and walked in a run but managed to escape the jam before allowing any more damage. He's given up one or fewer runs in five of his last six starts, lowering his season ERA to 1.83 through 73.2 innings. Rodon is lined up to face Seattle at home next week.
Jun 14 2021Rodon (6-2) allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out nine over seven innings to pick up the win over Detroit on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had his nasty stuff and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before the Tigers scuffed him for a run. The win snapped a five-start streak in which the left-hander was 0-2 with three no-decisions despite a 3.45 ERA during that stretch. Rodon will carry a tidy 1.89 ERA into his next start, expected to be Friday at Houston.
Jun 8 2021Rodon tossed five innings against Toronto on Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was far from efficient in the outing -- he needed 106 pitches (only 65 of which were strikes) to get through five frames -- but Rodon nonetheless logged his eighth start out of 10 appearances this season in which he has allowed one or zero earned runs. The only tally against him came in the second inning, when Chicago scored a run on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly. Rodon's ERA dipped to 1.96 with the strong outing, and he has registered a superb 88:15 K:BB through 59.2 innings on the season. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Sunday at Detroit.
Jun 5 2021Rodon will now start Tuesday's series opener against the Blue Jays, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon had been listed as the starter for Sunday's game against the Tigers, but the White Sox will choose to give him extra rest ahead of his next outing. Dylan Cease will now take the mound in Sunday's series finale.
May 31 2021Rodon allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings in a win during Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out eight and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon got off to an ugly start by coughing up two straight solo homers to begin the game. He then allowed another solo homer to Cesar Hernandez in the third. It was just his second start this season where he gave up more than two runs and he still owns a strong 1.98 ERA through 54.2 innings. Rodon is projected to face Detroit at home this weekend.
May 26 2021Rodon (5-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Cardinals after recording 10 strikeouts and gave up one run on one hit and zero walks across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old served up a solo homer during the third inning to Tommy Edman, but he only allowed two other batters to reach base (both via hit by pitch). Rodon has failed to pick up a win in each of his past two starts despite allowing only one run on three hits with a 23:0 K:BB over 12 frames.
May 21 2021Rodon logged six scoreless frames while striking out 13 and giving up two hits and zero walks Friday against the Yankees. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 13 strikeouts were a career high for a Rodon, who also happens to be in the midst of a career-best year. The Yankees were 0-for-12 with nine strikeouts against Rodon's slider. His ERA is now down to 1.27 with 62 strikeouts through 42.2 innings.
May 15 2021Rodon (5-1) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the Royals after allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks while fanning five across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was initially scheduled to start Thursday against the Twins but was pushed back after experiencing back and hamstring tightness, and there's a chance these ailments might have been the reason why he posted his worst outing of the campaign to date. However, the fact that he still owns a 1.47 ERA after giving up four runs Saturday illustrates just how dominant he's been all year long. His next scheduled start will come next week at the Yankees.
May 14 2021Rodon (back/hamstring) will be good to go for his scheduled start Saturday against the Royals, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was initially scheduled to start Thursday against the Twins but was pushed back after experiencing back and hamstring tightness. Any injury is a worry for a player like Rodon who has battled more than his fair share of ailments, but these particular issues appear minor and aren't related to the elbow and shoulder problems which forced him to miss extended periods in recent seasons. It's possible Rodon is on a reduced pitch count Saturday, but the White Sox may need him to go as deep as possible, as a doubleheader Friday could wind up taxing the team's bullpen.
May 12 2021Rodon was pushed back from starting Thursday due to back and hamstring tightness, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old is now scheduled to start Saturday, so the back and hamstring issues don't appear to be serious concerns. Rodon doesn't appear to be in danger of missing a start, but it's worth keeping an eye on his status over the next couple days.
May 7 2021Rodon (5-0) allowed five hits over six shutout innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Royals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon continued his incredible start to the 2021 campaign by sprinkling five harmless singles across six frames Friday. He's now earned a win in each of his five starts this season and hasn't allowed more than one earned run in any appearance. The 28-year-old southpaw is now sporting a 0.58 ERA and 44:9 K:BB through 31 innings this season. Rodon is projected to face the Twins at home next week.
May 3 2021Rodon will open the series against the Royals on Friday, Jared Wyllys of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's turn in the rotation came due Wednesday against the Reds, but the White Sox opted to push him back a couple of days, so that Dallas Keuchel could pitch on normal rest. Rodon has won all four of his starts thus far while sporting a sterling 0.72 ERA and 0.64 WHIP.
Apr 29 2021Rodon (4-0) picked up the win Thursday after holding the Tigers to one run on two hits and a walk while striking out 12 across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Coming off eight days of rest between starts, Rodon was lights out Thursday, collecting a career-high 12 strikeouts as he remained undefeated. Aside from an RBI double by Jonathan Schoop in the fourth inning, Rodon managed to limit Detroit's damage while keeping his command in check. The 28-year-old walked only one batter, a major improvement from his last outing when he issued five free passes at Cleveland. Overall, it's been a strong campaign for Rodon, who has only allowed two runs across his four starts. He'll look to keep the momentum rolling on the road next week at Cincinnati.
Apr 28 2021Rodon won't pitch Wednesday against the Tigers since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The contest will be made up via a straight doubleheader Thursday. According to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Rodon will start the matinee with Dylan Cease on the mound for the nightcap.
Apr 20 2021Rodon (3-0) earned the win Tuesday at Cleveland after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old followed up his no-hitter with another strong performance Tuesday, though the walks led to an elevated pitch count and prevented him from pitching deeper into the contest. The runs were the first Rodon has surrendered this season, and he now has a 0.47 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB through three starts (19 innings). He lines up to face the Tigers at home next Tuesday.
Apr 14 2021Rodon (2-0) no-hit Cleveland on Wednesday, allowing only a hit batsman while striking out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon wasn't even originally scheduled to start Wednesday -- he had his Monday start pushed back due to a stomach illness. The delay certainly proved to work in the left-hander's favor as he hurled his first career no-hitter and the 20th in franchise history. Rodon came achingly close to a perfect game, but he plunked Roberto Perez on the back foot on an 0-2 pitch with one out in the ninth. The mistake didn't throw Rodon off his mission, however, as he subsequently struck out Yu Chang before inducing a Jordan Luplow groundout to secure the historic feat. Rodon has now started the campaign with 14 scoreless innings and has allowed only two hits while posting a 16:3 K:BB. His next start will be at Boston on Monday.
Apr 13 2021Rodon (upset stomach) will start Wednesday against Cleveland, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Assuming there are no setbacks in Rodon's recovery from an upset stomach that led to his scheduled start Monday being pushed back, he will face Cleveland with a couple extra days of rest. Lance Lynn will follow him Thursday.
Apr 12 2021Rodon was scratched from his scheduled start Monday against Cleveland due to an upset stomach, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon looked quite good in his first outing of the year, striking out nine in five scoreless innings against the Mariners. He'll have to wait at least a few more days to follow that up. The White Sox have yet to announce when he'll next take the mound. Dallas Keuchel starts in his place Monday.
Apr 6 2021Rodon (1-0) picked up the win Monday, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out nine over five scoreless innings against the Mariners. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon followed up an encouraging spring -- during which he won the No. 5 starter job over Reynaldo Lopez -- with a dominant start to the regular season. It was the first win since April 19, 2019 for Rodon, who has battled back from elbow and shoulder surgeries. The left-hander pitched out of a couple of jams; most notably, he walked the bases loaded in the fourth inning, then struck out the side. Rodon recorded 19 swinging strikes and topped out at 98.4 mph. He's scheduled to make his next start Sunday at home against Kansas City.
Mar 27 2021Rodon allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six over 4.2 innings in Friday's spring game against Milwaukee. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon allowed a first-inning solo home run, his first run allowed during Cactus League play, then was charged with another after leaving the game. He finishes up the spring with two runs allowed on nine hits and one walk while striking out 16 over 13.2 innings. The left-hander will serve as Chicago's fifth starter.
Mar 23 2021Rodon will open the season as the White Sox's fifth starter after the team sent Reynaldo Lopez to the alternate camp Monday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This should be no surprise to those who have looked at the spring numbers. Rodon outpitched Lopez, who had a 9.00 ERA and 1.82 WHIP over four outings and 11 innings. For his part, Rodon has tossed nine scoreless innings this spring, allowing just four hits without a walk while striking out 10.
Mar 22 2021Rodon allowed one hit and struck out five over four scoreless innings in Sunday's spring game against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon continued his bid for a spot in the rotation and has thrown nine scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts and zero walks. The left-hander threw 49 pitches Sunday, more than half of which were is four-seam fastball along with his slider and changeup. He told Scott Merkin of MLB.com that commanding his fastball makes his entire arsenal better. The White Sox kick off the season with eight straight games, so they will need a fifth starter immediately. Rodon has two more spring starts to push his pitch count and be ready for the first turn of the rotation in the regular season.
Mar 17 2021Rodon allowed one hit and struck out four over three scoreless innings in Tuesday's spring start against the Padres. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon, who has worked fewer than 70 innings in three of the last four seasons due to injury, is making a bid for a back-end rotation spot. The left-hander has thrown five scoreless innings in Cactus League play without a walk. He made adjustments to his core with the help of pitching coach Ethan Katz and feels it's easier to command his four-seamer with additional spin, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com. Rodon's main competition for the final rotation slot is Reynaldo Lopez, who followed him Tuesday and allowed two runs, four hits and one walk over three innings.
Mar 12 2021Rodon allowed two hits and struck out one over two scoreless innings in Thursday's spring game against the Reds. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon made his Cactus League debut as a reliever for starter Rodrigo Lopez. The two are competing for the final spot in the rotation, and Thursday's outcomes favored Rodon. Lopez was hit hard during his three innings, and he believes he may have been tipping his pitches, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Whichever pitcher doesn't make the rotation is expected to be part of the bullpen.
Mar 7 2021Rodon threw three innings of live batting practice Saturday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon, who was re-signed by the White Sox after the left-hander battled elbow and shoulder injuries the last two seasons, is projected to be Chicago's fifth starter but has not yet appeared in Cactus League competition. Saturday's batting-practice session came on the same day that Reynaldo Lopez, who is being stretched out and has starting experience, pitched two perfect innings as a starter against the Indians. If Rodon falters this spring or during the regular season, Lopez is on hand to take on a spot in the rotation.
Feb 26 2021Rodon has a clearer path to the fifth starter job than expected, with the White Sox announcing Friday that Michael Kopech would open the year in the bullpen, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Kopech was the obvious choice for the role on talent alone, but he's missed two full seasons due to Tommy John surgery and an opt out. The White Sox will manage his innings to start the year, opening the role up to someone else. Rodon hasn't been officially named the winner of the job, but he's the obvious candidate when the alternatives are players like Reynaldo Lopez and Jonathan Stiever. The lefty recorded a 4.01 ERA over his first four big-league seasons but has to prove his health and effectiveness this spring to earn the job, as he's struggled to a 5.74 ERA in 42.1 innings over the last two campaigns while missing most of both years due to Tommy John surgery.
Feb 22 2021White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz is working with Rodon to overhaul the pitcher's lower half, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Katz believes Rodon's quad-oriented delivery led to the left-hander throwing across his body, which the coach believes does not promote good arm health. "He's starting to understand how his lower half is supposed to move more efficiently. And it's just going to take time. When you've done something for a long time, it's hard to get out of that, but over time, we hope we can tap into things that he hasn't been able to do," said Katz. Rodon battled shoulder issues last season, making two starts and two relief appearances. His command was not consistent, and he allowed seven earned runs in 7.2 innings. Still, the White Sox were pleased to see that his four-seamer averaged mid-90s (touched 98 MPH), and he still possesses a nasty slider. If he adjusts to the new mechanics, Rodon could emerge as the team's fifth starter in 2021.
Jan 30 2021Rodon signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the White Sox on Saturday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon will return to the White Sox after being non-tendered by the team in early December. The southpaw has battled injuries over the past two seasons and only made 11 appearances (nine starts) as a result. During that time, Rodon posted a 5.74 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 42.1 innings. He should compete for a back-end rotation spot once again heading into 2021.
Dec 2 2020Rodon was non-tendered by the White Sox on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was set to enter his final year of arbitration, but Chicago elected to make him a free agent by not tendering him a contract for 2021. Rodon made only 11 appearances over the past two seasons due to injuries and had a 5.74 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 42.1 innings, and he had only one season over 150 innings since making his debut in 2015..
Sep 25 2020Rodon (0-2) allowed a run on two hits in a third of an inning and was credited with Thursday's loss to Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon, who was activated from the injured list earlier in the day, was used at a crucial spot in the game. Jimmy Cordero left with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning, and Rodon was tasked with getting the final out. Making his first appearance since Aug. 3, Rodon gave up a two-run single and two-run double. He's expected to pitch out of the bullpen for the White Sox in the postseason, and this looked like an audition for a key setup role -- although if it was, Rodon didn't exactly pass it with flying colors.
Sep 24 2020Rodon (shoulder) was reinstated from the 45-day injured list prior to Thursday's game against Cleveland. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He last pitched Aug. 3 -- one of only two appearances for the southpaw this season. It's encouraging that Rodon's shoulder is healthy enough for him to be activated, but it is unclear exactly what his role will be down the stretch and into the postseason. He could get a brief audition as a long reliever over the final four games, and could make the postseason roster in that capacity.
Sep 13 2020Rodon (shoulder) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This doesn't officially end his season, as he last pitched Aug. 3. He is scheduled to throw off a mound Monday. That said, Rodon's health has been an issue for a long time and he hasn't had much success when he has pitched in games in recent years. Prospect Jonathan Stiever enters the rotation Sunday.
Sep 11 2020Rodon (shoulder) is scheduled to throw off a mound Monday, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 27-year-old was scheduled to throw a 60-pitch bullpen session last week, but those plans were scrapped after he began experiencing shoulder discomfort. Rodon may not have enough time to get stretched out to a starter's workload by the end of the season, but the White Sox could shift him to the bullpen to expedite his return.
Sep 5 2020Rodon (shoulder) was experiencing discomfort Friday and didn't throw his scheduled 60-pitch bullpen, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon has been ramping up his workload and appeared to be near a return, but his timetable became murkier following his recent setback. The team will monitor his status in the coming days to determine when he could return to the mound.
Sep 1 2020Rodon (shoulder) threw a 60-pitch, three-inning bullpen session Sunday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: That the White Sox didn't make any major moves at the trade deadline suggests they are confident Rodon can return soon. The left-hander was pulled after his second start this season with shoulder soreness.
Aug 29 2020Rodon (shoulder) is scheduled to throw either three innings or 60 pitches Sunday in a simulated game, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon has been on the injured list since Aug. 4 with right shoulder soreness and has been ramping up his throwing regimen over the last few weeks. Assuming all goes well in his outing Sunday, Rodon could be activated and rejoin the starting rotation sometime next week.
Aug 18 2020Rodon (shoulder) threw on the sideline Sunday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said Rodon's return to the roster could drift into September. Of the two Chicago starters currently on the injured list, Rodon is behind Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder), who is looking at a return by the end of August.
Aug 12 2020Manager Rick Renteria said Wednesday that Rodon (shoulder) remains limited to playing catch off flat ground, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Considering that Rodon has yet to resume mound work more than a week into his recovery from the left shoulder soreness he experienced in his Aug. 3 start against the Brewers, he likely won't be ready to return from the 10-day injured list until late August at the earliest. The White Sox's schedule has allowed the team to get by with a four-man rotation since Rodon was shut down, but Chicago will require a replacement for the southpaw Aug. 18 against the Tigers.
Aug 9 2020Rodon (shoulder) played catch Saturday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder soreness Tuesday, but his quick return to throwing is a good sign for his recovery. Rodon remains without a timetable for his return, though he could rejoin the White Sox within a few weeks.
Aug 5 2020Preliminary scans on Rodon's shoulder came back clean, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon landed on the injured list earlier in the week after experiencing shoulder soreness during his second start of the season. Fortunately, it doesn't sound like the right-hander is dealing with anything more than soreness; according to general manager Rick Hahn, Rodon could be back with the team in a matter of a few weeks. The White Sox have not yet announced who will replace Rodon in the rotation for the time being.
Aug 4 2020Rodon landed on the the 10-day injured list with shoulder soreness Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was making just his second start since returning from Tommy John surgery when he was removed due to shoulder soreness Monday as his velocity dropped dramatically. It's not yet clear when he's expected to return. Brady Lail was recalled in a corresponding move, though he's been exclusively a reliever over the last two seasons, so it could be Ross Detwiler who enters the rotation in his absence.
Aug 3 2020Rodon (shoulder) will be re-evaluated Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon's velocity dropped below 90 mph in the second inning of his start against the Brewers on Monday, but he managed to surrender only one run in two innings. Van Schouwen mentions Ross Detwiler as a potential replacement for Rodon if he ends up hitting the injured list. Rodon's initial diagnosis was left shoulder soreness.
Jul 28 2020Rodon (0-1) allowed five earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four across 3.2 innings to take the loss in the White Sox second game against the Indians on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon was hit hard out of the gates, surrendering doubles to Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez, prior to being taken yard by Carlos Santana in the first inning. He settled in for the middle portion of his start, but appeared to lose energy in the fourth inning, walking the bases loaded prior to being pulled. While it wasn't a strong performance in the box score, Rodon's velocity ticked up as he went deeper into his start, and he also generated 10 swinging strikes on 71 total pitches. He'll look to improve on this performance during his next turn through the rotation, though he's penciled in for a tough matchup at Milwaukee on Monday.
Jul 23 2020Rodon (elbow) is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Indians, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon, who underwent Tommy John surgery 14 months ago, will be ready to take his first turn through the rotation. His presence in the rotation will push Gio Gonzalez to the bullpen. Across seven starts before getting injured last season, Rodon posted a 5.19 ERA and 46:17 K:BB in 34.2 innings.
Jul 17 2020Rodon (elbow) allowed three home runs and struck out four over 3.2 innings during Thursday's intrasquad game, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Rodon's second outing since having Tommy John surgery 14 months ago. Despite the home runs -- two by Edwin Encarnacion and one by Tim Anderson -- the left-hander was pleased with his slider. "Slider was sharp, fastball was decent, close to almost all the way," Rodon said. "A couple of missed pitches, things we can get better at, and good thing these don't count." It's unclear where Rodon stands when the season opens. He's almost certain to be part of the rotation at some point during the season, but that may not happen immediately.
Jul 12 2020Rodon (elbow) started Saturday's intrasquad game and threw 45 pitches, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The action marked the first time Rodon has thrown off the mound at Guaranteed Rate Field since May 2019. "As far as stuff, the ball feels like it was coming out good," Rodon told Scott Merkin of MLB.com. "Today, it [velocity] was a little down, and the last BP it was coming out really well. Hopefully, this next go around next five days I get that recovery I need, and I step on the mound and it's back." Rodon mentioned a need to get up and down a few more times and try to hit the 90-pitch mark before the start of the season. The left-hander may not be part of the rotation to start the season, but he could pitch multiple innings as a reliever (or opener).
Jul 5 2020Rodon (elbow) threw three innings and 45 pitches during a live batting practice session Sunday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon, who underwent Tommy John surgery last May, described himself as close to 100 percent following the session. He threw all of his pitches, including a fastball he termed "electric." Rodon is next scheduled to pitch in an intra-squad game Friday. The left-hander should be ready to hurl for the White Sox during the 2020 season, but he may not have a spot in the rotation right away. The White Sox currently have five healthy starters, so Rodon may have to bounce between the rotation and bullpen.
Jun 25 2020Rodon (elbow) should be ready to pitch at some point near the start of the regular season or shortly thereafter, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The White Sox have five set starters ready to throw when MLB's season resumes around July 23 or 24, but they will get an added boost with both Rodon and Michael Kopech coming off Tommy John elbow surgery. Rodon had talked about being ready to pitch by June, so it's likely he'll be contributing at some point. With starters not expected to pitch deep into games initially, both Rodon and Kopech could be used as openers or in piggy-back situations.
Apr 10 2020Rodon (elbow) said he feels good enough that he could be pitching by June, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon went as far as saying a June return "is realistic," but the left-hander admits getting the White Sox management and medical staff to give him permission would be a sticking point. Original estimates pegged a July return for Rodon, who is in the final stages of rehab from Tommy John surgery. Rodon has been throwing three days per week at the team's spring training complex in Glendale (Ariz.), including bullpen sessions on Mondays and Fridays. That's the same activity he would have been performing even if MLB had started its season on time.
Mar 19 2020Rodon (elbow) could return to active duty by July, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper talked about what looks like a strong starting rotation to open the season, then anticipated the additions of Rodon and Michael Kopech. Cooper expects both pitchers to join the rotation at some point in 2020. Rodon played catch while training camps were open, and Cooper said the left-hander looked better than expected. Rodon underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2019, so a return during the second half of the season is likely, unless there's a setback.
Feb 18 2020Rodon (elbow) has exceeded expectations in his rehab process, according to pitching coach Don Cooper, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon underwent Tommy John surgery back in May, which is expected to keep him out until some point in the second half this season. It's unclear if Cooper's comments indicate that he's on a faster timeline than expected or if he's simply throwing quite well for where he currently is in the process. He threw a side session Monday.
Feb 12 2020Rodon (elbow) was able to play catch Wednesday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rodon is expected to miss a fair portion of the upcoming season while he works his way back from May Tommy John surgery. His expected return date is not yet clear.

Jul 25 2018Rodon (3-3) got the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out eight over 7.2 innings against the Angels.Rodon was in top form Tuesday, going 5.2 no-hit innings and taking a one-hit shutout into the start of the eighth. The only damage on his ledger was done in his final frame, as he allowed two baserunners on a double and a walk and saw both runs come around to score against the bullpen, but it was still a terrific outing for the lefty. Following a rocky June, Rodon has worked to a 1.71 ERA with 21 strikeouts over 21 innings in three starts in July. Next up is a home date Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Jul 11 2018Rodon (2-3) tossed 7.1 shutout innings and allowed just three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in a victory Wednesday against the Cardinals.Rodon added 12 groundball outs to his nine strikeouts in a dominant outing, as the Cardinals only managed to get one runner to second base in the first seven innings. His changeup was particularly nasty, as Cardinals hitters whiffed at four of the 23 he threw (17.4 percent) and didn't manage a single hit on any of the seven changeups they put in play. Rodon has thrown quality starts in three of his last four outings and will take a 3.56 ERA into the All-Star break.
Jul 5 2018Rodon took a no-decision Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and six walks in six innings during the 4-3 loss to Houston. He struck out six and yielding a home run.Despite the sloppy stat line, Rodon held Houston off the scoreboard until Jose Altuve hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning. The 25-year-old lefty now owns a 4.29 ERA in 35.2 innings with a 28:15 K:BB. He's finished at least six innings in just half his starts so far this year. Rodon will host St. Louis next Wednesday.
Jun 30 2018Rodon (1-3) allowed five earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three across 5.1 innings to take the loss Saturday against the Rangers.Rodon didn't help himself in this start, as he allowed two solo home runs and also walked two batters in the fourth inning, both of which came around to score. While his results weren't horrible prior to Saturday's start, several troubling trends have emerged through five starts for him, most notable of which is his 1.8 HR/9 mark. He has also uncharacteristically struggled to record strikeouts, as 6.7 K/9 is over two strikeouts fewer than his career baseline.
Jun 24 2018Rodon (1-2) gave up two runs in eight innings Sunday, yielding seven hits and striking out three in a 10-3 win over Oakland.Fantasy owners would've liked to see more strikeouts in this one, but still a wonderful outing by Rodon. His only real mistake of the day was a solo shot off the bat of Mark Canha in the fifth inning. The 6-foot-3 left-hander has 19 strikeouts and a 3.70 ERA across 24.1 innings in four starts since his return from the DL. Rodon will take the mound Saturday in Texas.
Jun 20 2018Rodon (0-2) allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over 6.1 innings in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to Cleveland.Rodon had a bout of wildness in the second inning when he gave up all four runs. He walked two, hit a batter and let in a run on a wild pitch. Other than that, he was good. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters faced and pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in three starts. He'll get a second start during this fantasy week Sunday at home against the Athletics.
Jun 14 2018Rodon tossed five innings Thursday, yielding two runs on three walks and two hits while striking out four in a 5-2 loss to Cleveland.Rodon allowed a leadoff shot to Francisco Lindor, but settled down after that. In his two starts since coming back from the DL, the lefty is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA and a 11:5 K:BB ratio in 10 innings. Rodon should get another look at Cleveland early next week.
Jun 9 2018Rodon (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the White Sox fell 4-2 to the Red Sox, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks over five innings while striking out seven. The left-hander threw 63 of 97 pitches for strikes in his season debut, generating 15 swinging strikes, but some shoddy defense behind him and a pair of homers by Jackie Bradley Jr. and J.D. Martinez sent Rodon down to defeat. It doesn't look like the White Sox plan to limit his workload now that he's fully recovered from last September's shoulder surgery, putting Rodon on track to make his second start of the year Thursday at home against Cleveland.
Jun 9 2018Rodon (shoulder) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Saturday.Rodon is slated to make his first start of the season against Boston after being transferred to the 60-day disabled list April 12. Through three rehab starts at Triple-A Charlotte, he posted a 1.42 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with a 22:5 K:BB across 12.2 innings. Rodon will be tasked with a tough assignment, as he makes his season debut against a stacked Red Sox lineup.
Jun 7 2018Rodon (shoulder) appears likely to return from the 60-day disabled list to start Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. After throwing 92 pitches in his final rehab outing Sunday for Triple-A Charlotte, Rodon was on track to make his season debut for the White Sox at some point during the weekend series in Boston, but it wasn't immediately clear which day he would pitch. With the White Sox now listing Dylan Covey and Reynaldo Lopez as their probable starters for Friday and Sunday, respectively, it appears safe to conclude that Rodon will be on the rubber for the middle contest of three-game set. Rodon will likely oppose David Price in the matchup and shouldn't face any restrictions.
Jun 5 2018Rodon (shoulder) has joined the team and will likely be reinstated from the disabled list sometime this week, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. If Rodon is activated sometime during the week as expected, he'll be slated to make his season debut over the weekend against the Red Sox. He made it to 92 pitches in his last rehab start at Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, so it appears he's finally returned to health. Rodon made 12 starts in 2017 for the White Sox, posting a 4.15 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with a 76:31 K:BB across 69.1 innings.
Jun 4 2018Rodon (shoulder) allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out eight over five innings for Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.Rodon made his fourth rehab start and ran his pitch count up to 92. Other than not getting up and down six times -- he hasn't thrown more than five innings in any of the four minor-league starts -- there doesn't seem to be any reason for him to continue the assignment. He's posted a 1.53 ERA with 28 strikeouts over 17.2 innings while on rehab. The White Sox are off Monday, then have a stretch of five games in four days, including a double-header Tuesday. This would appear to be the perfect time to activate the left-hander.
Jun 2 2018Rodon (shoulder) is on track to rejoin the White Sox's rotation next weekend in Boston, Scot Gregor of the Chicago Daily Herald reports. He is making what will likely be his final rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Charlotte, so if all goes well, he could toe the rubber against the Red Sox on Friday or Saturday. Rodon has given up just one run while striking out 20 over 12.2 innings during his rehab assignment, and his frontline upside makes him a worthwhile flyer in many formats.
May 30 2018Rodon (shoulder) will not be activated to start Sunday against the Brewers, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. There was a hopeful sign after Rodon's latest rehabilitation start Tuesday that the White Sox might activate the left-hander from the disabled list to take his next scheduled turn at the major-league level, but the team tapped Dylan Covey to start Sunday. Rodon fired five scoreless innings and 86 pitches Tuesday, but it sounds like the White Sox want to see a little more from him. "We still want him to get up six times, get a little higher (pitch count)," manager Rick Renteria said before just before the team announced Covey to start.
May 29 2018Rodon (shoulder) allowed three hits and walked two while striking out eight over five scoreless innings for Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.Rodon took his turn in the rotation on schedule after he was drilled by a comebacker off the forehead in his previous start. The left-hander ran his pitch count to 86 (58 strikes), so he's stretched out enough if the White Sox choose to activate him for Sunday's game against the Brewers. The original plan was to give Rodon four rehabilitation outings, which means one more after Tuesday's start.
May 28 2018Rodon (shoulder) will make his next rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.Rodon will make his next rehab start on schedule after exiting his last outing for precautionary reasons after taking a comebacker off his forehead. Manager Rick Renteria said Rodon will be reevaluated following Tuesday's outing, but the manager is expected him to require at least a couple more rehab starts before rejoining the big club. He's been sidelined all season after undergoing shoulder surgery back in September.
May 26 2018Rodon (shoulder) is expected to make his next start after he was removed from his previous when a comebacker hit him on the forehead, Phil Thompson of the Chicago Tribune reports.Rodon exhibited no signs of a concussion and was treated merely for a cut on the forehead. He's expected to make at least two more rehabilitation starts and is on path to return to Chicago by the first week of June.
May 24 2018Rodon (shoulder) was removed from his rehab outing Thursday for precautionary reasons after being hit in the forehead by a comebacker, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. It was a scary moment for Rodon, but fortunately, he was able to avoid any serious injury after being hit by a line drive. Prior to his exit, Rodon had fanned six batters over 2.2 scoreless innings. He figures to remain on turn for his next rehab start, but the organization will surely do its due diligence before giving him the green light.
May 20 2018Rodon (shoulder) will make his next rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Charlotte.Rodon made his first rehab start Saturday with Low-A Kannapolis, allowing one run over five innings while striking out six. The starter is currently trending towards a return from the disabled list in early June.
May 19 2018Rodon (shoulder) allowed one run on three hits without a walk and struck out six over five innings for Low-A Kannapolis on Saturday. This was the first of what we expect to be several rehabilitation starts for Rodon. He tossed 65 pitches, 42 for strikes and allowed only three balls to leave the infield. The left-hander has been rehabbing his shoulder after undergoing surgery last September.
May 17 2018Rodon (shoulder) will embark on a rehab assignment with Low-A Kannapolis on Saturday, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports.Rodon has been pitching in extended spring training since the end of April and will likely require a couple stints in the minors before making his 2018 debut with the White Sox after undergoing shoulder surgery in September. If all goes according to plan, Rodon could return to the big leagues near the end of May.
May 1 2018General manager Rick Hahn said Rodon (shoulder) will likely make two more starts at extended spring training before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Rodon, who is on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from September shoulder surgery, is still targeting a late-May or early-June return. A more concrete timetable for his return should emerge once he's cleared to begin a rehab stint.
Apr 23 2018Rodon (shoulder) threw three innings in an extended spring game Monday.Rodon remains on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from September shoulder surgery. He's targeting a late-May or early-June return.
Apr 20 2018Rodon (shoulder) will begin throwing in extended spring training games Monday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The oft-injured southpaw underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder back in September, but it seems like he's finally healthy to get into game environments now. Rodon is still on track for a return in late May or early June barring any setbacks.
Apr 12 2018Rodon (shoulder) was moved to the 60-day disabled list Thursday.Though this move doesn't come as a surprise, it does guarantee that Rodon will not return to the mound for the White Sox until the late May/early June timetable that has been in play since the left-hander reported to spring training. Rodon has continued to work back from September shoulder surgery, as he's resumed throwing bullpen sessions in previous weeks. In a corresponding move, Chicago purchased the contract of Chris Volstad, who began the year with Triple-A Charlotte.
Mar 29 2018Rodon (shoulder) threw 30-to-35 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. While his teammates were enjoying an Opening Day win in Kansas City, Rodon was on the fields in Arizona working his way back from injury. It was the third time Rodon had tossed a bullpen, and he incorporated his slider into a mix that had been primarily fastball/changeup. His June timetable could be moved up, but the White Sox aren't rushing the left-hander.
Mar 28 2018Rodon (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday. As expected, Rodon will open the season on the DL as he continues to work his way back from September shoulder surgery. The 25-year-old has been throwing bullpen sessions with no issues and remains on track for a June return.
Mar 23 2018Rodon (shoulder) tossed 25 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday, Chris Gabel of MLB.com reports. This was Rodon's third bullpen session this spring. There were no setbacks reported, so Rodon remains on track for a June return.
Mar 21 2018Rodon (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a side session Thursday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The oft-injured left-hander did some tossing earlier in spring training, but this development is significant because it's the first time he's listed on the official team throwing schedule this spring. It's unclear whether this session will occur on flat ground or on a mound, but things should clear up in the coming days. Rodon seems to be on track for a return in early June.
Mar 5 2018Rodon (shoulder) threw nearly as hard as he can during a throwing session Sunday, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.Rodon has been playing catch most every day during spring training, but opted to ramp up the intensity during a flat-ground throwing session from 120 feet. The left-hander came away from the throwing session enthused and is looking to get on a mound and throw bullpen sessions by the end of the month.
Feb 24 2018Rodon (shoulder) will not pitch any spring training games, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.Rodon is throwing off flat ground, recently moving out to 90 feet, with all signs suggesting the left-hander is progressing nicely, according to Chicago general manager Rick Hahn. He'll likely throw in a competitive environment during extended spring training, followed by a rehabilitation assignment, and then an early-June return to the major leagues.
Feb 23 2018Rodon (shoulder) has been throwing from 90 feet without discomfort, James Fegan of The Athletic Chicago reports.Rodon isn't yet throwing with full intensity, but the lack of discomfort is an encouraging sign. It seems that the White Sox are following through with their plan to take things slowly with Rodon. He likely won't be pitching until early June.
Feb 22 2018Rodon (shoulder) may not return until June, per general manager Rick Hahn, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports. "This is more about getting him healthy for the long term rather than an extra two or three starts in April or May of 2018," Hahn said. "I'm guessing it's going to be closer to June 1, but until he's actually throwing in games, it's still speculative."Rodon, who underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery in September, has initiated a throwing program with hopes of joining the rotation at some point during the first half of the season. Initial reports speculated a possible April or May return, but Hahn's comments introduce doubts about that timeline.
Feb 15 2018Rodon (shoulder) was able to throw on back-to-back days, marking the first time since he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in September, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports.Rodon continues to make positive stride although it remains likely that the southpaw will miss a little time at the beginning of the season. There should be a more concrete timetable in the near future, but as of late January, pitching coach Don Cooper said that he wasn't anticipating Rodon being ready until a few weeks into the season, at the earliest, according to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune. More should be known in the coming weeks once he's able to ramp up his activity.
Jan 26 2018Rodon (shoulder) received approval to resume throwing next week, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Rodon had a follow-up appointment Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday, and earned clearance to get back to throwing for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in late-September. Pitching coach Don Cooper admitted that Rodon will likely miss some time at the beginning of the season, but more should be known once he's able to get back into the swing of things. Expect an update on his status around the start of spring training.
Jan 24 2018Rodon (shoulder) has yet to begin a throwing program, Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune reports.Pitching coach Don Cooper is not anticipating Rodon being ready for the start of the season. The left-hander suffered from a significant case of bursitis and underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery last September to debride the area, a procedure that removes dead, damaged or infected tissue to promote healing. The White Sox don't have a hard date for when Rodon may return, but should get a clearer picture when spring training begins mid-February.
Jan 12 2018Rodon (shoulder) agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million contract with the White Sox on Friday, avoiding arbitration.Pitching coach Don Cooper confirmed Thursday that Rodon is unlikely to be ready to begin 2018 after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in late September. The timetable for his recovery from surgery was estimated at 6-to-8 months. Expect the team to exercise extreme caution throughout the rehab process.
Jan 11 2018Rodon (shoulder) is not expected to be ready for the beginning of the season, according to pitching coach Don Cooper, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports.Rodon underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder in late September, which has kept his status in limbo for the start of this upcoming campaign. According to Cooper, the team will know more regarding his availability during the club's annual "SoxFest" toward the end of this month, and a more concrete timetable should come into focus by the start of spring training. Initially, it was expected that Rodon would miss 6-to-8 months, which has always placed the beginning of the 2018 season in jeopardy. Due to previous injuries and the nature of this ailment, the club will likely take it easy with Rodon, so don't expect the southpaw to be back in action until both parties are confident in his form.
Dec 12 2017General manager Rick Hahn said Rodon (shoulder) remains without a timetable for his return, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.Hahn noted he's received encouraging reports regarding Rodon's rehab, though he wouldn't speculate on the southpaw's status for Opening Day. Things should clear up closer to spring training. The White Sox figure to play it safe with Rodon, as the 25-year-old made just 12 starts last season due to injuries. He posted a 4.15 ERA but flashed top-of-the-rotation stuff, fanning 76 batters in 69.1 innings.
Sep 28 2017Rodon underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Wednesday, and is expected to miss 6-to-8 months while recovering from the injury, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.Although significant bursitis was found, this was relatively a good outcome for Rodon, as both the biceps and labrum didn't need any repair. Looking ahead to next season, the club stated that he could be ready for action as soon as Opening Day, or as last as June 1. It will likely be closer to the latter, but a better sense of a timetable should become present as we approach the start of the 2018 season.
Sep 23 2017Rodon and the White Sox are still trying to determine whether he will have surgery on his left (throwing) shoulder, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The southpaw was shut down for the season earlier in September and has not thrown since. Rodon's offseason recovery will determine how aggressively fantasy players should pursue him in 2018 drafts, though we're seemingly a long way from finding out the specifics about his timetable.
Sep 12 2017Rodon (shoulder) received a second opinion Monday and nothing new was discovered, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports. The lefty has been ruled out for the year, but the latest news is positive as it's been confirmed that Rodon is merely dealing with inflammation in his shoulder. He missed the start of the season with shoulder bursitis, but with a full offseason of rest, Rodon will hopefully be at full strength for the start of spring training. Dylan Covey has taken over for Rodon in the White Sox's starting rotation.
Sep 8 2017Rodon (shoulder) was placed on the disabled list Friday and will not pitch again in 2017.The official diagnosis was shoulder inflammation. The plan is for Rodon to undergo further examination next week, likely an MRI, the results of which will determine his rehabilitation plan over the offseason. Rodon only managed to make 12 starts this year with a 4.15 ERA, but he flashed nasty stuff as he struck out 76 batters over just 69.1 innings.
Sep 7 2017Rodon (shoulder) will undergo an MRI on Friday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Rodon's shoulder tightened up on him during warmups Thursday, resulting in his scratch just 15 minutes prior to first pitch. The White Sox understandably want to get the full picture before determining a course of action; after all, Rodon missed the first three months with left shoulder bursitis. Mike Pelfrey started in place of Rodon in the series finale.
Sep 7 2017Rodon has been scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Mike Pelfrey is now set to start against Corey Kluber and the Indians. A reason for Rodon's last-minute scratch was not immediately provided.
Sep 7 2017Rodon was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday with left shoulder stiffness, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports. The announcement was made just 15 minutes prior to first pitch, with Mike Pelfrey tabbed as Rodon's replacement. This is certainly a troubling development, as Rodon missed the first three months of the season with left shoulder bursitis, but at this point it's uncertain if he will miss additional time.
Sep 3 2017Rodon lasted just four innings Saturday against the Rays, although he allowed just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four. He didn't factor into the decision.Although the young southpaw didn't give up much to the Rays' offense, but his outing was cut short given that he required 69 pitches (41 strikes) just to get through the four frames. Despite a hiccup in his last start, Rodon has been excellent lately, producing a 3.00 ERA with a 45:13 K:BB in his past seven starts. He'll make his next start in the team's upcoming series with the Indians.
Aug 26 2017Rodon (2-5) allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings to take the loss Saturday against the Tigers.Rodon held the Tigers scoreless for the first two innings before giving up all five of his runs over the next two frames, leading to his fifth loss of the season. This outing snapped his string of five straight starts in which he had allowed two or fewer earned runs, and he should be considered a strong fantasy option down the stretch, although it could be difficult for him to pick up many victories with the White Sox offense. He'll make his next start Friday against the Rays.
Aug 21 2017Rodon (2-4) struck out nine over 6.1 two-run innings to earn the win Monday against the Twins. He allowed four hits and three walks.Rodon was effective at putting hitters away in this one, as he piled up the punchouts despite inducing a pedestrian 12 swinging strikes and throwing 63 percent of his pitches for strikes. He gave up single runs in the first and sixth inning and was only removed due to an elevated pitch count in the seventh. Rodon has now delivered five consecutive quality starts, posting an impressive 48:12 K:BB during that span. He will take a 3.88 ERA into Saturday's start against the Tigers.
Aug 17 2017Rodon allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four through 7.1 innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday. He didn't factor into the decision. It was another tough-luck outcome for Rodon, who left his bullpen with a lead they were unable to hold onto. He has now tossed four straight quality starts, a stretch over which he has zero wins but owns a shiny 2.10 ERA and 28:9 K:BB across 29.2 innings. More impressively, all four outings have come against first place teams (Dodgers, Indians, Astros and Red Sox). Rodon will look to keep lowering his 4.00 ERA as he toes the rubber against the Twins in his next appearance.
Aug 10 2017Rodon held the Astros to two runs on nine hits while striking out four without a walk over eight innings in Thursday's no-decision.While Rodon certainly didn't deserve to lose this one, that was almost the result until teammate Yoan Moncada extended the contest with a ninth-inning homer. The talented lefty came in with an inflated 4.66 BB/9 and 11.87 K/9 in 38.2 innings, but was much more effective here thanks to a willingness to challenge hitters rather than attempting to end every at-bat with a strikeout. Rodon threw 70 of his 98 pitches for strikes, allowing himself to work deep into the game for the second consecutive outing after failing to pitch a full seven innings in any of his first six starts. He has clearly turned a corner over the past two appearances, though things don't get any easier with a Wednesday road tilt against the fearsome Dodgers next on the schedule.
Aug 4 2017Rodon (1-4) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out 11 over 7.2 innings, but received no decision Friday against the Red Sox.Rodon had a two-run lead before giving up a single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to keep him from earning his second victory of the season. Not only has he lowered his ERA from 6.29 to 4.66 with a pair of strong starts in a row, he's also fanned 31 hitters over his past 18.1 innings, and if he can continue to build on his recent performances, he could be a fantastic fantasy option down the stretch. He'll make his next start Thursday against the Astros.
Jul 30 2017Rodon allowed a single run on six hits and two walks while striking out nine batters through 6.2 innings during Sunday's win over Cleveland. He didn't factor into the decision.Rodon fanned 11 Cubs through just four innings in his last start, so things appear to be trending in the right direction for the lefty. He owns high-end upside and an impressive 11.6 K/9 through six starts this season, so there aren't many fantasy settings where he can't move the needle. It's not out of the question to be selective with his opponents moving forward, and a tough matchup against Boston at Fenway Park is on deck. However, don't forget that Rodon's pedigree and pitch arsenal are elite.
Jul 25 2017Rodon (1-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks across four innings in Tuesday's loss to the Cubs. He struck out 11.Rodon struggled early in this one, allowing a three-run home run to Wilson Contreras in the first before Ben Zobrist tacked on an RBI double in the second. Though he put men on base with regularity, the lefty also had his strikeout stuff working in this one and tied a career high in punchouts despite leaving after 98 pitches over four frames. Rodon has struggled to the tune of a 6.29 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 24.3 innings since returning from a biceps injury, but his 11.5 K/9 is a silver lining as he looks to return to his best form. He will next take on the Indians on Sunday.
Jul 20 2017Rodon (1-3) allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 3.2 innings in Wednesday's rain-shortened 9-1 loss to the Dodgers.Rodon, who was making his fourth start of the season, was tagged for four home runs by the Dodgers over his 3.2 innings. With Jose Quintana shipped cross town to the Cubs, Rodon is being groomed to be the White Sox's ace but obviously the long layoff due to a biceps injury is not leading to ace-like results. He'll continue to take the ball every fifth day and there will be better days ahead, but fantasy owners must realize, in addition to the long layoff, the left-hander is pitching for a team with the worst record in the American League and an offense that won't steal many games for him. Rodon will next take the bump Tuesday against the Cubs on the north side of town.
Jul 9 2017Rodon (1-2) allowed six runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 5.1 innings during Sunday's loss to Colorado. The lefty had fared well through his first two starts of the season, so it's probably best not to overreact to a poor showing at Coors Field. Rodon has oodles of upside after posting a respectable 3.90 ERA and 9.1 K/9 through his first two seasons in the league. However, it's worth noting that the White Sox are in the midst of a rebuild, so Rodon could struggle to accumulate wins in the second half.
Jul 3 2017Rodon (1-1) held the Athletics to two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out 10 over 6.1 innings in the victory Monday night. The Athletics were waving at air Monday night, as Rodon induced a ludicrous 26 swinging strikes in 102 pitches. That's the kind of nastiness scouts have envisioned for him ever since he was the ace back at North Carolina State University. While he hasn't totally put the wildness that plagued him in his first start behind him, Rodon is so electric that he can afford a few walks and still put up a high quality line.
Jun 28 2017Rodon (0-1) gave up three runs -- all unearned -- on two hits and six walks over five innings in a losing season debut Wednesday against the Yankees. He struck out two.A biceps injury kept Rodon out for almost three months to start the season, and his return saw him struggle mightily with his control, throwing only 41 of 94 pitches for strikes. We'll give him a mulligan for his first game back, but expectations should remain tempered for Rodon -- while he should round into a decent source of strikeouts, it's hard to expect great ratios until he's able to demonstrate some refinements to his game.
Jun 28 2017Rodon (biceps) was reinstated from the 60-day DL ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday.Rodon will be making his season debut against the Yankees on Wednesday night after having been sidelined since March with biceps tightness. The southpaw has been relatively unimpressive over three rehab starts with Triple-A Charlotte, posting a 9.22 ERA over 13.2 innings, but will get a chance to reassert himself as a stable option in the White Sox rotation. The 24-year-old compiled a 4.04 ERA and 168 strikeouts over 28 starts last season.
Jun 26 2017Rodon (biceps) has been confirmed as the starter for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.Rodon has been out since spring training while recovering from the issue, but his 2017 season debut is finally in the headlights. However, his minor league rehab starts haven't been the most encouraging -- as evidenced by his 14 earned runs allowed over 13.2 innings -- so the southpaw certainly carries risk in fantasy until he proves he's back on track. Wednesday' outing should provide a firm indication as to Rodon's overall readiness, though the team may ease him back into taking on higher pitch counts.
Jun 25 2017Rodon (biceps) has returned to Chicago and will be in line to pitch this week, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports. The plan appears that Rodon will make his first start of the season during Wednesday's contest with the Yankees after recovering from biceps bursitis. Although there was no structural damage to his arm, the southpaw needed a couple months to work his way back, including four outings in the minors over the month of June. Rodon has struggled during his rehab outings, but the White Sox are confident that he's just a little rusty and should be ready to face major-league hitting while working on a pitch count for the time being.
Jun 24 2017Rodon (biceps) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 4.1 innings in a rehabilitation start at Triple-A Charlotte.Rodon was victimized by some poor defense during a seven-run fourth inning, but showed encouraging signs over the first three innings. He struck out six of eight batters during one stretch before things turned ugly in the fourth. While it was a fourth straight unimpressive rehab start for Rodon, he reached 91 pitches Friday and is at a point where he could make his next start for the White Sox. If Rodon is activated off the disabled list, his schedule lines up to pitch Wednesday at home against the Yankees.
Jun 24 2017Manager Rick Renteria indicated Saturday that Rodon's (biceps) next start could be with the White Sox, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Rodon has yet to pitch in the majors this season due to injury, but he's finally built his pitch count to a level where the team could be comfortable releasing him at the major league level. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old southpaw hasn't provided encouraging rehab starts, getting lit up in his one start at High-A and then allowing 15 runs (14 earned) over three Triple-A starts. The rehab starts also serve as a spring training of sorts for Rodon, so it's there's not too much to worry about with the results of those outings. It's still a bit unclear when he would make his season debut, but his return could knock David Holmberg out of the starting rotation.
Jun 22 2017Rodon (biceps) will make another rehab start Friday for Triple-A Durham. This could be Rodon's final tuneup before being activated off the disabled list to make his season debut for the White Sox. Although Rodon has not pitched particularly well through his first three rehab outings, sporting a 5.40 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP, he did manage to stretch out to 5.0 innings in his most recent start. Even if Rodon takes a few starts to truly regain his form with the White Sox, his return will be a boon to a rotation that currently sports the seventh-worst staff ERA (4.85) in the majors.
Jun 18 2017White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Sunday that he expects Rodon (biceps) to make another rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte this week before coming off the disabled list, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. When Rodon first kicked off the rehab assignment June 6, it was widely expected that the lefty would need four starts in the minors to build up his pitch count, so a return near the end of the month doesn't come as a surprise. Rodon hasn't looked particularly sharp during his three starts with a 6.75 ERA and 10:7 K:BB over 11 innings, but if he's able to mix in all his pitches effectively during his upcoming outing, the White Sox would see content to green light his return. Assuming Rodon remains on a normal schedule of four days' rest between starts, he could rejoin the White Sox as soon as June 27 against the Yankees.
Jun 17 2017Rodon (biceps) gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one over 5.2 innings in Saturday's rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte. In his last rehab start he walked four and gave up five hits while striking out three in 3.2 innings. In this latest outing it seemed like he may have been sacrificing some electricity to try to cut down on the walks. Either way, he has not been impressive on the road back to the big-league rotation. He is expected to make one more rehab start before being activated.
Jun 11 2017Rodon (biceps) gave up four runs on five hits and four walks over 3.2 innings during his second rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. He struck out three batters.Rodon upped his pitch count to 84 on Sunday, but struggled mightily to find the zone, tossing only 44 of his pitches for strikes. The left-hander has been roughed up in both of his rehab starts, but the White Sox haven't indicated any plans to alter his timeline for returning from the disabled list. He's expected to make two more rehab starts with Charlotte before being activated.
Jun 7 2017Rodon (biceps) is expected to make his second rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.Rodon started his rehab assignment with Charlotte on a tough note, allowing five earned runs over 3.1 innings Tuesday, but will have plenty of time to get things right before returning to the majors. Sunday is projected to be the second of four rehab appearances for the southpaw, as he continues to recover from a biceps injury suffered in spring training.
Jun 6 2017Rodon (biceps) threw 71 pitches over 3.1 innings during Tuesday's rehab start for High-A Winston-Salem. He allowed five earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six.He struck out the side on 10 pitches in the first inning, but things unraveled from there. This was his first rehab start, and he is expected to require four total before joining the big-league rotation. Things could have gone a lot better from a results perspective, but looking at the results of rehab outings can be dangerous, as pitchers are typically working on things other than specifically preventing runs.
Jun 4 2017Rodon (biceps) will make a rehab start with High-A Winston-Salem on Tuesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. After tossing simulated games at extended spring training for the last three weeks, Rodon is finally ready to advance to the next phase of the rehab process. The young lefty has been on the disabled list all season with upper biceps bursitis, so it's expected that he'll require four rehab starts in the minors before rejoining the White Sox, likely at some point in late June. Mike Pelfrey should retain a spot in the rotation until Rodon is officially activated.
Jun 2 2017Manager Rick Renteria said that Rodon's (biceps) simulated game went well and that he's ready for the next phase of his recovery process, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. This is a good development for the young southpaw, although the White Sox are hesitant to say that this "next phase" is a rehab assignment. This could simply mean that he'll continue to ramp up his pitch count in a more controlled environment (such as another simulated game), but the club is remaining fairly mum on the topic. Rodon still seems to be on pace for a return in the middle or toward the end of June.
May 31 2017Rodon (elbow) is scheduled to throw a five-inning simulated game Thursday, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.Rodon continues to gradually progress through his recovery process, though the White Sox still refuse to offer a timeline for the southpaw's possible return. He's already tossed multiple simulated games over the past couple weeks, so barring any setbacks, it would appear a rehab assignment could be around the corner for Rodon.
May 30 2017Rodon (biceps) will pitch four or five innings in Arizona on Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. He is still in extended spring training, but it sounds like a rehab assignment could be right around the corner as he ramps up his activity. There is no concrete timetable for his return to the big-league rotation.
May 22 2017Rodon threw a fourth simulated game Monday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon, who started throwing off a mound earlier this month, threw 60 pitches and got up and down four times Monday. It was another sign of his pending return, though the White Sox refuse to put any timeline on the left-hander. General manager Rick Hahn said the next step for Rodon is to build up arm strength and endurance.
May 10 2017Rodon (biceps) is pitching off a mound in Arizona but has yet to throw in a game, according to general manager Rick Hahn, Paul Skrbina of the Chicago Tribune reports.Hahn was asked about Rodon's status on a night when the White Sox had Mike Pelfrey make a start for the fourth time, highlighting the current problems in the starting rotation. Pelfrey (0-3, 5.21 ERA, four starts) and Dylan Covey (0-3, 8.28 ERA, five starts) are taking turns two of every five days while Rodon and James Shields (shoulder) remain out of the picture. At this point, there's no timetable for Rodon's return.
May 4 2017Rodon (biceps) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Thursday. He was not expected back before June, so this does not change his timetable, and simply frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for David Holmberg. Rodon is in a throwing program, but the White Sox have been vague about his progress. He was on the DL retroactive to March 30, so the earliest he could return is May 29.
May 3 2017Rodon (biceps) remains on a throwing program but manager Rick Renteria remains vague about the left-hander's progress, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. In a question-and-answer exchange with reporters Tuesday, Renteria replied to three questions about Rodon with a variation of the same answer: "He continues to be on his throwing program, and he's doing well. He's progressing well." Rodon did not meet with the media when he was back in Chicago last week and has since returned to Arizona. The White Sox won't say if he's thrown off a mound. Once he's ready to take the mound, Rodon will need a few turns through a rotation to build up strength and innings. A best-case scenario has Rodon returning early June.
Apr 24 2017Rodon (biceps) played catch Monday afternoon while White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper looked on, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon, who's in town for a routine check up with the team's medical staff, looked fine playing catch according to Cooper but the neither he nor manager Rick Renteria offered any more details.
Apr 23 2017Rodon will have his biceps evaluated again in the coming days, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. It was last reported that Rodon hadn't resumed throwing from a mound, so it's likely that his return is still a ways off. Following his examination a clearer timetable for his return should become available.
Apr 18 2017Rodon still hasn't progressed to throwing off a mound, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon is reportedly making progress, but the White Sox are taking no chances with the 24-year-old. He's still set to be reevaluated during Chicago's upcoming homestand, at which point there should be a clearer timetable for his return. Given how slow the White Sox are moving him along, it wouldn't be too surprising if he overshot his mid-May return date. Dylan Covey will continue to fill in as the fifth starter until Rodon returns.
Apr 10 2017Rodon (biceps) is scheduled to be reevaluated during the White Sox homestand, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. In the meantime, Rodon will stay back in Arizona and continue his throwing program while his team remains on the road. He'll be reevaluated around April 21, at which point the White Sox may decide to ramp up his workouts. He is still aiming to return sometime around mid-May, though the White Sox will continue to proceed cautiously with the 24-year-old. Dylan Covey will continue to fill in as the fifth starter until Rodon is able to return.
Apr 3 2017White Sox GM Rick Hahn said Monday that Rodon (biceps) could be back with the team in five-to-six weeks if he endures no setbacks during the recovery process, Scott Gregor of the Daily Herald reports. The White Sox have ruled out any structural damage to Rodon's left biceps after he experienced tendinitis a little more than a week ago, but the team still plans to proceed cautiously with his recovery. Rodon has already resumed throwing at extended spring training in Arizona and is scheduled to be reevaluated April 10, at which point the White Sox may loosen the reins a bit and let him begin throwing off a mound. While the White Sox wait for the young southpaw to work his way back from the injury, they'll aim to get by with Dylan Covey as their fifth starter.
Apr 2 2017Rodon (biceps) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday, CSN Chicago's Dan Hayes reports. The transaction doesn't come as a surprise after Rodon experienced biceps tightness a little over a week ago that forced him to miss his final two starts of spring training. The left-hander has already started a throwing program and is scheduled to be reevaluated April 10, at which point the White Sox will determine whether or not he'll require a rehab assignment. The White Sox will likely try to get by with four starters when the schedule allows for it, but Dylan Covey will serve as the No. 5 rotation option for the time being until Rodon is activated.
Apr 1 2017Rodon (biceps) is on a throwing program and will remain at the White Sox training complex in Glendale (Ariz.) before he's re-evaluated around April 10, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "He feels pretty good right now, actually,'' general manager Rick Hahn said Saturday. "The pain has subsided.''Hahn also mentioned the likelihood of a rehab assignment, so it's sounding like Rodon could miss at least two turns through the rotation, possibly more, to start the season. That would enhance the fantasy value of whichever starter is named to fill in for Rodon -- either Dylan Covey or Anthony Swarzak.
Mar 28 2017Rodon's second opinion revealed no structural damage, and he was diagnosed with biceps bursitis, the Chicago Tribune's Colleen Kane reports. He will be in a throwing program for two weeks and will then be re-evaluated.Similar to tendinosis, bursitis is a condition that results from inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions the shoulder joint. This is good news for Rodon, as he should theoretically be able to avoid surgery on his throwing arm. He should be discounted in drafts, as it is unclear when he will rejoin the rotation, but should still come off the board in most formats given this diagnosis and his high-strikeout upside. Dylan Covey is the favorite to start the season in the rotation until Rodon is healthy enough to return.
Mar 25 2017Rodon (biceps) will travel to Los Angeles a second opinion Monday, but says the clean MRI is "reassuring," Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon noted that he had never felt such severe tightness as he did Thursday and that it was a "scary" experience, so getting a second opinion is likely a precautionary move with Opening Day just nine days away. The southpaw has taken on a light workload this spring to better condition his arm for late-season innings after he posted a 4.04 ERA over 28 starts with the White Sox last season.
Mar 24 2017Rodon's MRI on Friday revealed no structural damage, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon was scratched Friday with biceps tightness, but the MRI he underwent revealed no structural damage, which is what the White Sox originally believed was the case. He's still set to get a second opinion, but for now it seems like the worst-case-scenario was avoided. The 24-year-old is still likely to miss the start of the season, but a firmer timetable should be available after the second opinion.
Mar 24 2017Rodon was scratched from Friday's spring league game due to tightness in his biceps, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports. This isn't promising news for either party. Rodon will head for an MRI, though the White Sox don't believe there is any structural damage at this point. Even so, the White Sox were moving Rodon along very slowly this spring in anticipation of an increased workload, so if there isn't any structural damage, it's still likely he'll miss some time to start the season. This is obviously a situation to monitor, and more will be known about the southpaw's status after the test results are revealed.
Mar 19 2017Rodon allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five over four scoreless innings in Sunday's game against the Angels, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.Rodon, who was making his first spring start, threw 65 pitches (38 for strikes) and then tossed another 10 in the bullpen after leaving the game. He'll get two more Cactus League starts before the regular season, which should get him up to the six-inning, 85-pitch range. The team's goal for the left-hander this season is to throw 200 innings, but in order to do that, he'll need to become more efficient. He averaged 5.9 innings and 100 pitches per start in 2016.
Mar 17 2017Rodon will start his first Cactus League game Sunday and will throw a side session Friday to prepare for it, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports. It's a welcome development for the left-hander, who has been handled carefully this spring in order to preserve his innings and arm heading into 2017. His noteworthy improvement with control (3.0 BB/9 last year) while sustaining his dominance (9.2 K/9) bodes well for his development. Perhaps he'll deliver at least some of his lofty upside in more than 165 innings, which could make him one of fantasy's most profitable starting pitchers of 2017 if he's grabbed in the middle rounds of mixed leagues.
Mar 14 2017Rodon may throw another simulated game before pitching in a Cactus League game, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. It had previously been reported that Rodon's next round of live pitching would take place in a spring game, but the club is now debating whether or not they'll have him throw one more workout before taking the next step. While the White Sox are being cautious, it doesn't appear that they're concerned with his health, as the club's pitching coach said that Rodon's form was good and that his pitches were behaving well.
Mar 14 2017Rodon threw 64 pitches during a simulated game Tuesday morning, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Rodon threw all of his pitches and got up and down four times against minor leaguers in the organization. Van Schouwen also reported Rodon's next live action will be in a Cactus League game.
Mar 11 2017Rodon threw a 48-pitch live batting practice session Saturday and says he felt great.Rodon continues to build up his strength in a long-term effort to preserve his arm late into the season. He will throw another bullpen session Tuesday and, depending on how it feels, will be set for his spring debut in the proceeding days.
Mar 8 2017Rodon threw 40 pitches in his third bullpen session of the spring Wednesday, Bruce Levin of 670 The Score reports.Rodon has been brought along slowly this spring in an effort to put less stress on his arm and has two more bullpen sessions to go before he sees any live action. Additionally, manager Rick Renteria confirmed the left-hander will not make his season debut until the fifth or sixth game of the season as he lags behind the other starters. Rodon is expected to take on an increased workload even after compiling a 4.04 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 165 innings last season, so it may be prudent to trust the light pitching work this spring.
Mar 5 2017Rodon tossed his second bullpen session of the spring Sunday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon will get a couple of days off before throwing a live batting-practice session Wednesday and then another Saturday. Soon after that second BP session, he could make his spring debut in a game. The left-hander will be on a tight schedule, but the White Sox feel he'll be ready to go for the first turn of the rotation during the regular season.
Mar 5 2017Rodon threw his first bullpen session of the spring Friday, despite having an upset stomach, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "It was good to finally be back up there again," Rodon said. "It's been a while, but it felt good to get back up there. It's tough with a little stomach thing, but we still got it done."Rodon said he was feeling better Saturday and is scheduled to throw another bullpen session Sunday. The White Sox are bringing the left-hander along slowly during spring training after he experienced some fatigue in 2016.
Mar 3 2017Rodon's manager, Rick Renteria, said Friday that there is a chance Rodon may not be fully ready to go at the start of the regular season, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Although there doesn't appear to be any injury involved, the White Sox are bringing Rodon along slowly during spring training in order to not put too much stress on his arm. While it is by no means a certainty, it's looking like their cautious approach may even extend into the beginning of the regular season. The White Sox will be looking for Rodon to take the next step in his development this season, as they look to fill the void in their starting rotation left by the departure of Chris Sale.
Mar 2 2017Rodon played catch Thursday and is lined up to toss a bullpen session Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. There's no injury here -- just a cautious approach to manage Rodon's workload in 2017, which is expected to climb. Easing off the southpaw in spring will allow him more innings in the regular season, during which he could finally break through as a fantasy hurler. While his prospective owners should only expect around 170 innings, he could dominate during them, considering last year's sizable control improvements (4.59 BB/9 in 2015, 2.95 in 2016) and 3.45 second-half ERA.
Feb 28 2017Rodon is scheduled to pitch his first bullpen session of the spring on Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The White Sox continue to move Rodon along very slowly this spring, and the bullpen session is just the next step in his throwing program. He'll likely throw a few bullpen sessions before the White Sox move him on to live batting practice. The 24-year-old isn't injured, but he is expected to increase his workload in 2017, which explains why he is being eased into spring.
Feb 25 2017Rodon will go through a long-toss session Saturday, Scott Merkin of the White Sox's official site reports. The White Sox are taking it slow with Rodon, who will have a "two more long-toss sessions," according to manager Rick Renteria, before they assess the next step. Rodon is not injured, but the team plans to increase upon the 165 innings he threw in 2016, so they aren't in a rush to expose him to game action.
Feb 18 2017Rodon threw Friday for the first time since arriving to spring training, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The White Sox have adopted a very conservative plan for Rodon, who is at least a week away from his first bullpen session. There will be minimal Cactus League action as the left-hander will get a lot of his work in on the backfields of camp. Rodon, who threw 165 innings last season, is expected to carry a heavier load in 2017.
Feb 14 2017Rodon is easing into spring training as he is expected to increase his workload in 2017, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He said he isn't expected to throw until Friday, and that the White Sox are taking it slow with him because his workload is going to be a bit more this year. The 24-year-old will be a big part of the White Sox pitching staff, who traded their ace Chris Sale in the offseason and are still considering moving their current ace Jose Quintana.
Feb 11 2017Rodon could become the ace of the staff if the White Sox trade Jose Quintana. The Quintana watch has been on since December when the White Sox unloaded Chris Sale and Adam Eaton. If he's dealt, that opens up the No. 1 starter job for Rodon, who figures to be the choice for a young rebuilding team over guys like James Shields or Derek Holland. Rodon, the third-overall draft pick in 2014, showed some improvement last season, improving his walk rate but also permitted hits at a greater rate. If the left-hander can keep his fastball from catching too much of the plate, Rodon becomes a breakout candidate for 2017.
Sep 30 2016Rodon (9-10) struck out 10 and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits in a victory over the Twins on Friday. He also walked three. After a rough middle of the month, Rodon ends the year on an extremely high note, having struck out 21 and allowed just two earned runs in his final 14 frames. It was definitely a difficult first half for Rodon, but he posted a 3.10 ERA after August 1. Overall, he finishes the season with a 4.04 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 168 strikeouts in 165.0 innings.
Sep 26 2016Rodon threw eight scoreless innings against the Indians on Sunday to earn his eighth win of the season. He struck out 11 and walked just three against an Indians squad that would have clinched the AL Central had they won. The start tied career-highs in terms of innings and strikeouts, and it broke a two game stretch over which he had allowed 12 runs. Rodon has been woefully inconsistent in his sophomore season, but starts like Sunday's will likely keep his auction price somewhat inflated in 2017.
Sep 19 2016Rodon (7-10) was beaten up for six runs on eight hits and a walk over just four innings in Monday's loss to the Royals.Just to put in perspective how bad Rodon was, he threw 96 pitches in his four-plus frames -- only 10 fewer than opposing starter Yordano Ventura tossed while posting a complete-game win on the other end. It was the fifth inning when the wheels really came off for the second-year lefty, who gave up an RBI single and then a three-run homer to end his day. After a red-hot run, the 2014 No. 3 overall pick has given up six runs in two straight outings. He'll look to turn it around Sunday against the Indians, but they were responsible for his other six-run game last week.
Sep 14 2016Rodon (7-9) gave up six runs on nine hits and three walks over five innings in Wednesday's loss to Cleveland. The second-year lefty had been on a hot streak, winning four straight and giving up two or fewer runs in six of seven starts, but surprisingly ran afoul of an Indians team against which he'd previously experienced great success. Rodon's made definite strides with his formerly shaky control this year, though, and if he can get enough for that .336 BABIP to come down, he should push his ERA back down into the threes; Wednesday's outing pushed it up to 4.04.
Sep 9 2016Rodon (7-8) allowed one earned run on six hits over six innings Friday. He struck out nine and walked two.Rodon has now posted an impressive run of seven consecutive quality starts and is firmly entrenched in the middle of the White Sox rotation. For the season, he has a 3.80 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 138 strikeouts across 142 innings.
Sep 2 2016Rodon (6-8) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits, struck out five and walked on over seven innings in a victory over the Twins on Friday. This was the first time since July 31 that Rodon allowed more than two runs in a start. Even still, the left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA over his last six outings. This recent success has improved his season totals to a 6-8 record, 3.90 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 128 strikeouts in 136.0 innings. He will look to keep it going against the Royals next Friday.
Aug 28 2016Rodon (5-8) allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out six over six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Mariners.Rodon's been on fire this month, as he's allowed just five runs over his five outings, lowering his ERA from 4.67 to 3.91. Despite the run of good success, he'll need a strong finish to the season to improve upon the 3.75 ERA he put up as a rookie in 2015. He'll make his next start Friday against the Twins.
Aug 23 2016Rodon (4-8) threw 6.2 shutout innings and allowed just three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in a win Tuesday over the Phillies.Rodon's quality start streak is now up to four. He has walked just six batters in 24.2 innings over this stretch, a big improvement over his 3.0 BB/9 on the season. Rodon also hasn't allowed a home run over his past four starts after allowing 17 in his first 17 outings. If he can sustain these improvements in control and command, expect this hot streak to continue down the stretch.
Aug 18 2016Rodon went six innings and gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out five in a no-decision on Thursday against the Indians.Entering Thursday's game, Rodon's August ERA sat at a lowly 1.50, and he continues his hot streak with another strong outing against the Indians. Overall, the former first-round pick is 3-8 with a 4.26 ERA as he's struggled with command (3.02 BB/9) and home runs (1.32) all season.
Aug 7 2016Rodon held the Orioles to two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks over six innings Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision. He struck out seven. This was one of Rodon's better starts of the season in terms of results, and it was also his hardest start of the year in terms of velocity (his fastball averaged over 95 mph, and he frequently neared 100). However, the White Sox were unable to break the tie until after he exited, so Rodon remains stuck on two wins on the year.

Jul 30 2016Rodon (wrist) will start Sunday's game against the Twins, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Signs have been pointing toward a Rodon return Sunday for a few days now, and manager Robin Ventura confirmed that to be the case earlier Saturday. Rodon went 3.0 innings in his rehab start Monday, so he'll be able to start Sunday's contest on full rest. The White Sox will likely activate Rodon shortly before his start, at which point they will announce a corresponding roster move.
Jul 29 2016Manager Robin Ventura said Rodon (wrist) will likely start Sunday against the Twins, the Chicago Tribune reports. The fact that the White Sox optioned Anthony Ranaudo to Triple-A on Thursday seems to foreshadow Rodon's activation this weekend. He should return to the majors for a favorable matchup - a Twins' lineup that may be further thinned by trades ahead of the July 31 deadline.
Jul 25 2016Rodon (wrist) lasted 3.2 innings during Monday's rehab start at Triple-A Charlotte, giving up two earned runs on five hits with two walks.Rodon's minor league start wasn't picture perfect, but it might be the only Triple-A outing he needs before rejoining the White Sox. That said, the organization has yet to decide his next step.
Jul 24 2016Rodon (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Charlotte.Rodon has been throwing side sessions and facing hitters in recent days without issue, so he'll move on to the next phase of the rehab process. While he's already missed more than minimum 15 days, it's possible he'll need only one rehab start before the White Sox feel comfortable activating him from the DL.
Jul 21 2016Rodon (wrist) will toss another side session Thursday after completing one Tuesday, Connor McKnight of WLS AM-890 reports.Rodon said that his wrist felt better after throwing Tuesday and will get a rehab assignment in Triple-A sometime soon after he feels ready enough for game action. The southpaw could return to the team by the end of next week barring any future setbacks.
Jul 19 2016Rodon (wrist) said his wrist felt better after throwing Tuesday and will be back at it again Thursday, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.Rodon was placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to July 9 after spraining his left wrist slipping down the dugout steps. He is eligible to be activated Thursday, but will likely need more time before returning to the club, as he is going to throw again Thursday to see how he feels, and could throw from 90 feet in the coming days. He recently stated that he's getting some mobility back, and should return in the near future barring any setbacks.
Jul 16 2016Rodon (wrist) played catch from 60 feet on Saturday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Rodon is eligible to come off the disabled list this coming Wednesday, but it's unlikely the second-year left-hander will be ready to go then, though he did report progress Saturday, noting he's getting some mobility back.
Jul 15 2016Rodon will play catch Saturday to test out his sprained wrist, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports. The expectation was that Rodon would miss just one start as a result of the injury, but the White Sox could opt to send the lefty for a minor league rehab start if they are not satisfied with Saturday's throwing session. Rodon has cut down on the walks considerably from a year ago and is still averaging a strikeout per inning, but he's been done in by the long ball and some tough luck on balls in play.
Jul 9 2016Rodon (wrist) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a sprained left wrist, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Rodon was placed on the DL retroactive to July 6 after slipping on the dugout steps and bracing his fall with his hand. He should only miss one start and will be eligible to return to the team before their series begins against Detroit on July 21. In a corresponding move, the White Sox called up Tommy Kahnle from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday. Throughout the 2016 season, Rodon has posted a 2-7 record, 4.50 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP during 92 innings of work.
Jul 5 2016Rodon (2-7) allowed six runs (five earned) on 12 hits and two walks over five innings in a loss Tuesday to the Yankees. The Yankees hammered Rodon for four doubles and two home runs. As great as Rodon's stuff is, he has had a huge problem with the home run. He has now allowed 15 in just 16 starts, and this marks the fifth time he has allowed multiple homers in a single start. His ERA is up to 4.50 and his struggles can almost entirely be blamed on the long ball (1.5 HR/9).
Jun 30 2016Rondon (2-6) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs, five hits and one walk while striking out six in a no-decision Thursday against the Twins.Rodon retired the first 11 Twins hitters he faced before Robbie Grossman and Brian Dozier launched back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. Rodon pitched a perfect fifth, but the Twins scored two in the sixth on three hits and chased Rodon from the game. The White Sox built up a 5-2 lead against Twins starter Tommy Milone by scoring one run in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth, but Rodon was unable to capitalize on the opportunity to win his third game of the season. He'll take a disappointing 4.24 ERA and 1.46 WHIP into his next start Tuesday against the Yankees.
Jun 19 2016Rodon (2-6) gave up two run on eight hits and a walk in 6.1 innings Sunday while striking out eight, but came away with a no-decision in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Indians. It was arguably his best start of the season, as his 8:1 K:BB topped a couple of 7:1 efforts earlier in 2016. Rodon threw 66 of 99 pitches for strikes including an impressive 16 swinging strikes, but had to watch from the dugout as David Robertson coughed up the game in the 10th inning. Rodon will have a tough matchup in his next start Friday though, at home against the surging Blue Jays.
Jun 11 2016Rodon (neck) will start Sunday against the Royals, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Manager Robin Ventura had left himself some wiggle room, previously labeling Rodon as "likely" to start Sunday, but the skipper did away with any doubt as to Rodon's status after Saturday's game. Rodon was skipped one time through the rotation due to neck discomfort. He's had the Royals' number in two starts against them so far this season (three earned runs in 11.2 innings).
Jun 10 2016Manager Robin Ventura said Rodon (neck) will likely start Sunday against the Royals.Rodon was in flux after having his last start skipped due to neck soreness, but it appears he will be ready to get back on the mound before the weekend comes to a close. Rodon has started twice against the Royals this season and has allowed just three earned runs over 11.2 innings.
Jun 7 2016Rodon is dealing with neck discomfort and will have his next start skipped, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon underwent an MRI that came back without revealing any issues, so it sounds as though this may be more of a short-term issue. Miguel Gonzalez will get the start Thursday in his place, but Rodon could be ready to slot back into the rotation after missing just one turn through.
Jun 3 2016Rodon (2-5) surrendered seven hits, four earned runs and three walks over six innings in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Tigers. He struck out five.As has been in the case in a few of his five losses, Rodon wasn't terrible Friday, but did give up some key homers. The 23-year-old was touched up for an early solo shot by James McCann in the second inning, and Victor Martinez followed suit with one of his own in the third. It was Rodon's third start of the last five with double-digit homers surrendered, and he also issued multiple walks for the third straight start. He'll look to bounce back versus the Nationals next Thursday.
May 28 2016Rodon didn't earn a decision in the White Sox's 8-7 loss to the Royals on Saturday. He surrendered six hits, an earned run and two walks over five innings, while also striking out three. The 23-year-old southpaw turned in one of his best performances of May, but missed out on the win when the Royals rattled off seven runs in the bottom of the ninth. Rodon had been solid over 105 pitches, inducing 11 swinging strikes while keeping the ball in the yard for the second straight game. He'll try to bounce back versus the Tigers in Detroit next Friday.
May 22 2016Rodon (2-4) allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four over 6.2 innings to earn the win Sunday against the Royals.Rodon gave up single runs in the second and sixth innings, and the White Sox provided him just enough offense to earn a victory for the lefty. He now has thrown three quality starts over his last four outings, lowering his ERA to 4.47. He'll make his next start Friday at Kansas City.
May 18 2016Rodon allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Tuesday against Houston.Rodon has three quality starts in his past five appearances and has at least six strikeouts in each of those five starts. The consistency isn't there yet -- he has allowed five runs in three of his eight starts this season. Rodon is racking up the strikeouts, now up to 47 in 45.2 innings, as the 23-year-old is having no trouble missing bats at the MLB level, but his ERA is still an underwhelming 4.73.
May 11 2016Rodon allowed six runs on 12 hits and two walks despite striking out seven over 6.2 innings in a no-decision Tuesday against the Rangers.Rodon was nasty at times, as he induced 15 swinging strikes, but Rangers hitters made him pay for his mistakes. Not only did Rodon give up a season high in hits, he allowed two homers accounting for four of the six runs the Rangers managed off him. Rodon has had no trouble drawing whiffs and has 40 strikeouts in 39.2 innings, but he has allowed fewer than three runs in a start just once in his past five outings and has allowed six home runs in that span. Rodon's talent is obvious, but major league hitters are figuring him out, and he's going to have to show he has the ability to adjust.
May 4 2016Rodon (1-4) took a loss to the visiting Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six in six innings.Since winning his second start of the year on April 13, Rodon's gone four consecutive outings without a win (but with three losses) and has seen his ERA explode from 1.38 to 4.36 in that time. This wasn't a bad outing -- the bare minimum to be called a quality start -- but it also represents the latest sign that Rodon hasn't taken a step forward from last season. The 23-year-old southpaw may well grow into an ace one day, but that day isn't here yet.
May 3 2016Rodon's next start will be moved up to Wednesday against the Red Sox, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.Rodon was initially slated to go Thursday, but the departure of Wednesday's scheduled starter John Danks necessitated the move. He'll still face the same Boston club he was originally planned to oppose and will be working on full rest, so it shouldn't be too drastic of a change.
Apr 29 2016Rodon allowed six runs (four earned) on eight hits, walking one and striking out seven over seven innings of a 6-3 loss to the Orioles on Friday night.Rodon (1-3) has been on a roller coaster this season, from game-to-game, even from inning to inning. He tossed four scoreless innings before the O's hung a three-spot on him in the fifth. Then he allowed a three-run home run in the seventh when Baltimore took control. Rodon is exceptionally talented, but he is young and learning on the job so he will have nights when he struggles, particularly with his command. He'll face off against the Red Sox at home next time out.
Apr 24 2016Rodon did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Rangers, surrendering two hits, two earned runs and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out seven. The sophomore lefty's mistakes were few and far between, but costly nonetheless. Rodon surrendered his first homer since his first start of the season to Ian Desmond, who tagged him with one on in the second. He otherwise had some positives to take out of his third quality start over four trips to the mound, including a season high in strikeouts. Rodon's overall performance had to be a huge sigh of relief after lasting only a third of an inning and giving up five earned runs versus the Angels on Apr. 18.
Apr 18 2016Rodon (1-2) couldn't make it out of the first inning in Monday's loss to the Angels, as he recorded just one out and allowed five runs on six hits and two walks.Rodon tossed 41 pitches -- just 22 strikes -- and went through the whole White Sox lineup before he was mercifully pulled. The only right spot here is that Rodon's first two starts were good enough that this disaster only raised his ERA to 4.73. These are the growing pains 23-year-old starting pitchers often experience; the promise he showed in the first two starts (13 innings, 12 strikeouts, 1.38 ERA) should speak louder than this blowup.
Apr 13 2016Rodon (1-1) walked five batters in six innings Wednesday, but held the Twins off the board, striking out six and allowing just three hits in a winning effort.Rodon's first two starts as a sophomore major leaguer are a microcosm of what we can expect from him all year long -- great stuff and often brilliant pitching, but also walk issues that he'll have to work around. He did that successfully last year, but more sustainable success will come when Rodon gets his control under... well, control.
Apr 6 2016Rodon (0-1) allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six over seven innings against the Athletics on Wednesday, but was stuck with a 2-1 loss.Unfortunately for Rodon, he was matched against, Oakland ace Sonny Gray, who narrowly outpitched him. The third overall pick in 2014, Rodon showed spectacular strikeout ability as a rookie last year, but struggled with his control, so it had to be great for his fantasy owners to see him throwing strikes in this one. If he can keep track of where his electric stuff is going, Rodon should see his stats improve across the board this season. His next start comes Monday against the Twins.
Mar 31 2016Rodon stretched out to 108 pitches in his final spring appearance Thursday and is slated to make his next start Wednesday in Oakland, Daryl Van Schouwen reports.Rodon entered Thursday's minor league tuneup with a 7.98 ERA across 14.2 innings, which is far from ideal, but he was able to put together a solid outing to close out spring training. He'll open the season as Chicago's third starter behind ace Chris Sale and Jose Quintana.
Mar 12 2016Rodon threw four scoreless innings against the Padres on Friday without using his slider, the White Sox's official site reports.Rodon's came into the league with an already elite slider, but being able to harness his other pitches should propel him into the next tier of starters. He enters the season as the third man in the White Sox rotation.
Mar 6 2016Rodon threw three scoreless innings against the Padres on Sunday, allowing just one hit and striking out two.It was a solid Cactus League debut for Rodon, who struck out 21 in 17.2 innings last March. This year, Rodon is guaranteed the third spot in the White Sox's rotation, and his superb slider could have him in line for a breakout in 2016.
Sep 25 2015Rodon allowed two runs on five hits, walking five and striking out four over six innings of a 5-2 victory against the Yankees on Friday night.Rodon (9-6, 3.75 ERA) has strung together eight consecutive quality starts as he works to establish himself as a reliable starting pitcher. He still loses his release point at times - note the five walks in this one - but the young southpaw has the stuff to escape many of the jams he stumbles into. He features a very high ceiling, and will only improve as his command sharpens.
Sep 19 2015Rodon (8-6) surrendered six hits, one earned run and a walk in 7.2 innings in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Indians. He struck out four.Rodon has now posted seven consecutive quality starts, and his sparkling 1.74 ERA in September speaks to the degree that he has stymied opposing batters. The young southpaw has also demonstrated improved efficiency and control in his most recent pair of appearances, only surrendering one walk in each. Tellingly, Saturday's performance was also the longest Rodon has pitched into a ballgame with as few a number of pitches, with the 25-year-old averaging a bit over 13 offerings per inning (102 pitches total) against the Twins in just under eight frames. If he can continue to reduce the control problems that have plagued him in his young career, Rodon's potential for dominating performances appears to be substantial.
Sep 14 2015Rodon's next start will be against the Indians on Saturday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Rodon was skipped over the last time through the rotation to rest, with his last appearance on the mound back on Sept. 8 against the Indians as well. The 22-year-old has lasted at least six innings for six consecutive games while going 3-2 over that time span with a total of 41 strikeouts.
Sep 12 2015Rodon will be skipped next time through the rotation, according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times.The White Sox announced their starters for their upcoming four-game series against the A's on Saturday and Rodon was not on the list, so it appears the club is taking the opportunity to conserve his innings. It's not clear when Rodon's next start will be, but it will not be until next Friday at the earliest.
Sep 9 2015Rodon gave up one run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight in seven innings Tuesday against the Indians. He has really started dealing of late, allowing just eight runs over his last 41 innings after getting off to a shaky start. The White Sox have not said anything about shutting Rodon down, and with Erik Johnson joining the rotation there will be less stress put on the rookie's arm down the stretch. Rodon's next start should come Tuesday against the A's.
Sep 8 2015The White Sox do not have any plans yet to shut Rodon down before the end of the season, the Chicago Tribune reports."Can he go to the end of the year? Yeah, I think he can go to the end of the year," manager Robin Ventura said. "I don't think he's gotten to that point where he's hit a wall or we're in a numbers crunch or anything like that." The White Sox may be moving to a modified six-man rotation after adding Triple-A star Erik Johnson to the roster last week, and in doing may cut a start or two off Rodon's slate.
Sep 2 2015Rodon (6-6) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings against the Twins on Wednesday, but was stuck with the loss. He struck out four and walked three. The rookie has now put up five straight outings of at least six innings and two or fewer earned runs, but his control continues to be a major issue -- he's given up 10 walks in his last three starts alone, and and his strikeouts have thinned out over the last couple. The lefty has now thrown about as many innings as he did between college and the pros last year, so he may see his workload limited or get shut down altogether sometime this month.
Aug 30 2015The White Sox have yet to decide whether to limit Rodon's innings in September, the Daily Herald reports.Rodon is currently at 112.2 innings in his rookie season, 122.2 if you include the 10 innings he threw at Triple-A Charlotte prior to his recall to the majors. That is a relatively light load for a full-season of play, but he has averaged more than 100 pitches per start while throwing a ton of sliders. He could yield a start or two in September to September additions like Erik Johnson or Frankie Montas, but do not expect a full shut-down.
Aug 27 2015Rodon (6-5) continued his run of success on Thursday, as he allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over six innings in a win against the Mariners. He struck out five. This was a standard Rodon performance as he was hard to hit and continued to walk batters. While Rodon has only allowed 109 hits in 112.2 innings, he has walked 61 batters this season and that's far too many if he wants to maintain a decent WHIP. Once he hones in all of his skills with some control, he'll become an elite arm in baseball. Rodon takes on the Twins in his next start on Wednesday.
Aug 23 2015Rodon held the Mariners to three runs (one earned) on six hits over seven innings Saturday, but he did not factor into the decision. This was another excellent outing, mucked only by his four walks and a Carlos Sanchez error at second base. His slider created 11 swing-and-misses, and all of eight his K's came via that pitch. That pitch could push him up the ranks of starting pitchers next season if he can rein in the walks.
Aug 17 2015Rodon took a rough complete game loss Monday against Anaheim, as he went all eight innings and allowed two runs on four hits and three walks. He struck out five. Both runs off Rodon came off solo home runs; he was otherwise brilliant, drawing 10 swinging strikes and nine ground balls with 104 pitches. His ERA is down to 4.42, and the third overall pick from 2014 has now struck out 106 batters in 99.2 innings this year.
Aug 11 2015Rodon was sharp Tuesday, earning his fifth win by shutting out the Angels for seven innings. His 11 strikeouts were a career-high for the rookie, and with four hits and just one walk against him, Rodon was in complete control all game. The lefty has an elevated 4.61 ERA, but will look to sink that number when he takes the mound again next week.
Aug 5 2015Rodon allowed four runs on six hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out two in 4.2 innings, but did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rays.Rodon was spotted a 5-0 lead, but he was pulled in the fifth inning for being what manager Robin Ventura called "erratic". The lefty has struggled in his last four starts, as he's allowed 19 earned runs in 18.1 innings. He'll try to turn things around in his next start Tuesday against the Angels.
Jul 31 2015Rodon lasted just three innings on Friday, coughing up eight runs on eight hits and four walks in a loss to the Yankees. He struck out four in the effort. As per usual, poor control helped lead to Rodon's unraveling. He is averaging a horrendous 5.4 BB/9 this season and seems to alternate between starts where his stuff is electric and those where he gets drubbed. Maybe that means his next start will be a good one, but it will be difficult for owners to trust him until he stops handing out so many free passes.
Jul 22 2015Rodon allowed seven runs on seven hits in just four innings Tuesday to fall to 3-3 on the year.He was done in by a Matt Holliday grand slam in the fourth inning, and Rodon received few favors from his defense all night (the Cardinals' first run was set up by a misplayed ball in the outfield). The start was a major bump in the road for Rodon, who has now allowed four or more runs in three of his past five starts.
Jul 11 2015Rodon threw six scoreless innings against the Cubs on Friday, but he did not factor into the decision in the White Sox's 1-0 win.As usual, the White Sox's offense struggled to scroe runs, so Rodon could not score the win in his second scoreless appearance of the past month. He did not do himself any favors by running up his pitch count with six walks, and he only threw 57 of his 104 pitches for strikes. Rodon enters the second half of the season as a solid No. 3 in the White Sox's rotation, but the club may skip a few starts and/or limit his innings at some point.
Jul 5 2015Rodon was charged with four runs (three earned) on four hits and four walks in a loss to the Orioles on Sunday. He struck out seven over five innings.Making his first start since June 25, Rodon battled control and inefficiency issues once again, needing 102 pitches to complete the five frames. He did strike out seven, six via swinging strikes, to bring his total to 62 in 60.1 innings, but Rodon also served up a home run to Jonathan Schoop. Rodon has now given up three homers in his last two starts after allowing just one in his first 50.1 innings this season.
Jul 3 2015Rodon will take the ball Sunday against the Orioles. He will start Sunday's game in order to give Chris Sale and extra day of rest. Rodon has been filthy at times, but has also struggled a bit with his control in his rookie season. His 3.54 FIP is a little more indicative of the pitcher Rodon is likely to be going forward and he should continue to strikeout a batter per inning.
Jul 1 2015Rodon could start Sunday against the Orioles, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The White Sox had seemed intent on skipping Rodon this week, but they now considering giving Chris Sale an extra day between starts, which would create an opportunity for Rodon. After posting a 3.20 ERA in May, Rodon struggled to a 4.73 mark in June, but he is averaging a strikeout per inning and has allowed just three homers in 55.1 frames this season.
Jun 28 2015Rodon will have his turn in the rotation skipped this week, ESPN Chicago reports.Rodon's struggles in his last outing against the Tigers, coupled with the organization's desire to limit his innings count, will result in him sticking in long relief until after the Fourth of July weekend passes. He's expected to make his next start July 5 against the Blue Jays.
Jun 25 2015Rodon struggled Thursday, giving up four runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings against Detroit, though he struck out seven. The rookie hurler was in fact in line for the win when he left the game thanks to a sudden burst of offense from the White Sox, but the bullpen blew that for him. Rodon's up-and-down debut campaign continues -- he's missed a lot of bats (55 in 55.1 innings), but has also walked too many (31), and his HR/FB luck started regressing Thursday, as he gave up his second and third long balls of the year. Fantasy owners are going to have to try to pick and choose their spots with Rodon, but he's been a tough guy to predict from start to start. His next will be against the Cardinals on Wednesday.
Jun 20 2015Rodon picked up his third win of the season Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings, striking out five.Although Rodon's control issues continue to limit the length of his outings, the rookie has been effective recently, recording five quality starts in his last six games and lowering his ERA to 3.75 despite a 1.59 WHIP. That disparity could be put to the test in his next scheduled start though, on the road in Detroit on Thursday.
Jun 18 2015Rodon will start Saturday's game, ESPN Chicago's Doug Padilla reports. The White Sox had not initially listed a starter for Saturday's game, but they'll go with Rodon, keeping him on a regular schedule. After two strong outings to begin the month, Rodon was rocked in his last start in Pittsburgh on Monday, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in 3.2 innings.
Jun 15 2015Rodon was throttled by the Pirates Monday, allowing seven runs in 3.2 innings to saddle him with his first Major League loss. The young lefty has been mostly good this season, holding a 2.66 ERA before Monday's blow up. He had put together four straight quality starts coming into the day. Rodon will try to get back on track when he takes the ball against the Rangers this season.
Jun 9 2015Rodon shut out the Astros through six innings Tuesday to move to 2-0. He struck out five, walked two, and allowed four hits.Rodon induced six groundouts to one flyout in the process, a winning strategy if he's to succeed at U.S. Cellular Field. Rodon continues to look worth the hype, as his ERA fell to 2.66.
Jun 6 2015The White Sox list Tuesday's starter as "TBA," but Rodon is widely expected to take the ball in that game, CSN Chicago's Dan Hayes reports. After striking out 10 batters and allowing just one run in six innings in his last start, Rodon's rotation spot is not in jeopardy for performance issues, but more likely because of workload concerns. He matched his career high with 108 pitches in his last outing, and the White Sox will probably be looking to strategically skip Rodon's turn at times during the season in order to manage his innings. Make sure to check on his status over the next couple days to make sure he is in line to start Tuesday.
Jun 6 2015Rodon will make his scheduled start Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times' Brian Sandalow reports. The spot in the rotation had been listed as "TBA," but it sounds like Rodon will be kept on his normal schedule and make the start Tuesday. He is coming off his best start in the big leagues, fanning 10 and allowing just one run in six innings against the Rangers on Thursday, and should be deployed Tuesday in most formats.
Jun 4 2015Rodon struck out 10 and allowed one run, five hits, and three walks in six innings Thursday against the Rangers. The rookie recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and has now produced three straight quality starts, though they all resulted in a no-decision. Rodon lowered his ERA to 3.12 and now has 35 strikeouts in 34.2 innings for the season. As long as Rodon continues to produce quality starts, he'll carve his way into a spot in the rotation. His next start will be Tuesday against Dallas Keuchel and the Astros.
May 29 2015Rodon allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits, he did not walk a batter and struck out four over 6.1 innings, coming away with a no-decision in the White Sox 6-3 win in 11 innings over Houston on Friday night. He promising southpaw turned in a solid performance and kept the Sox in the game while tossing 92 pitches (58 for strikes). He initially came up for a spot start, but has performed well enough to maintain a spot in the rotation, albeit the White Sox will surely monitor his workload going forward.
May 26 2015Rodon will start Friday against the Astros.Rodon was skipped the last time through the White Sox' rotation, but it turns out that was just a temporary move, as he will return to the mound Friday in Houston. Rodon will square off against Lance McCullers in a matchup of promising young hurlers.
May 22 2015Rodon will not start Monday against the Blue Jays, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports. The lefty will be skipped Monday but it's not clear why. Manager Robin Ventura didn't offer up much, saying only that Rodon is not dealing with any health issues and the decision as to when he'll pitch next is "a private matter." Rodon walked five but gave up just one run on four hits over six innings in a no-decision against the Indians on Wednesday.
May 21 2015Rodon pitched six innings, giving up one run and four hits while striking out four and walking five Wednesday against the Indians. The rookie left-hander ended up with no decision, having left the game with the score tied 1-1. Rodon's turned in mediocre work over his first three starts, giving up eight runs over 18 innings, with 15 walks in that span. He'll need to do a better job harnessing his electric stuff to experience sustained success. Rodon's next scheduled start will be Monday at Toronto.
May 12 2015Rodon will officially move into the White Sox's rotation with Friday's start, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports. The Sox have not set an innings limit for the rookie, but it sounds like they have mapped thinks out through the All-Star Break and plan on skipping a few starts to afford him a bit more rest through the season. At this point, Rodon has an elite slider, an above-average fastball, and a developing remainder of his repertoire. It may work to his benefit to only pitch six innings per start, as it will allow opposing teams fewer opportunities to adjust to those pitches.
May 12 2015Rodon will get the start Friday against the A's, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun Times reports.Rodon will remain in the rotation for the time being and make his second career MLB start after earning the win Saturday over Cincinnati. The third overall pick in last June's amateur draft, Rodon's place with the White Sox is somewhat up in the air at this point, but a second successful start could persuade the team to keep him around, as the back end of the rotation has underwhelmed thus far.
May 10 2015Rodon picked up the victory in his first MLB start Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings against the Reds.He walked four, but he also struck out eight of the 24 batters he faced. He hit the high-90s several times in the start, and his lethal slider was just as effective in a starting role as it has been in the bullpen. The White Sox have yet to announce his role moving forward, but given the way Hector Noesi has been pitching, it may not be long until Rodon is in the rotation on a full-time basis.
May 10 2015Manager Robin Ventura wouldn't rule out Rodon making another start Friday in Oakland, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Rodon made his first MLB start during Saturday's doubleheader against the Reds and was highly impressive, striking out eight batters and giving up two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings to get the win. Both Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija will be back from their suspensions this week to reclaim their spots in the rotation, but the poor performances this season from the team's back-end members could lead Ventura to roll with Rodon in a starting role. Ventura said that Rodon would not be used in relief until the weekend while he weighs the decision of whether or not add the talented lefty to the rotation.
May 8 2015Rodon will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Reds, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports. With Friday's game postponed due to rain, Johnny Cueto and Hector Noesi will move back to start the first game of the twin bill, pushing Rodon and Jason Marquis to the nightcap. Rodon has given up just two runs in 6.1 innings out of the bullpen to this point despite allowing nine hits and four walks.
May 6 2015Rodon could be tabbed for the start Friday against the Reds, Phil Rogers of MLB.com reports.Jeff Samardzija officially dropped his appeal and began serving a five-game suspension Wednesday, leaving the White Sox with a vacant spot in the pitching rotation one time through. It had previously been reported that Rodon could be in line to start Sunday, but he threw in the bullpen Wednesday and instead appears to be on track to pitch a bit earlier in the week.
May 6 2015Rodon will start Saturday against the Reds. With Jeff Samardzija officially dropping his appeal and Chris Sale expected to do the same, the White Sox will turn to Rodon to make a start over the weekend. He's posted a 2.84 ERA in three appearances out of the bullpen in the majors and a 3.60 ERA with 13 strikeouts over two starts with Triple-A Charlotte.
May 5 2015Rodon is in line to start Sunday's game against the Reds, MLB.com's Phil Rogers reports. With Jeff Samardzija and Chris Sale expected to drop their suspensions after this current series against the Tigers, the White Sox will need one extra starter this weekend. Should Rodon impress, he could theoretically stick in the rotation as the White Sox have to be losing their patience with Hector Noesi and John Danks.
May 2 2015Rodon threw three shutout innings in relief of Hector Noesi on Saturday, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out two.It wasn't the most efficient outing, but the prized rookie managed to keep runs off the board. Rodon could be line to take Noesi's rotation spot soon if the right-hander can't turn things around soon.
Apr 26 2015Manager Robin Ventura said Rodon will likely make a spot start if/when Chris Sale and Jeff Samardzija serve suspensions related to the White Sox's scrum with the Royals, Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald reports. Both Sale and Samardzija received five-game suspensions for their part in a battle against the Royals, and while both are currently appealing their bans, both will probably miss a start at some point in the near future. This start will probably not be the start of an extended stint in the rotation, but a solid showing could bolster Rodon's case to replace Hector Noesi or John Danks.
Apr 21 2015Rodon made his first appearance with the White Sox on Tuesday, allowing two earned runs in 2.1 innings and only striking out one batter.Rodon will likely work his way into the rotation at some point, but this bullpen outing certainly wasn't promising. The rookie was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 draft.
Apr 20 2015Rodon officially had his contract selected by the Whites Sox on Monday. The move was announced Sunday, so it was just a matter of time before it became official. While he will begin his stint with the White Sox as part of the club's bullpen, it's strongly believed that he will take over a spot in the rotation eventually.
Apr 19 2015Rodon will join the White Sox on Monday, initially pitching out of the bullpen, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports.Rodon will likely wind up in the rotation at some point, but will begin his stint with the White Sox in the bullpen. Considered by most the White Sox's top prospect, he finished the 2014 campaign at Triple-A after beginning the year in rookie ball. Following ten innings at Triple-A Charlotte to begin the year, it appears the team has deemed him ready to show what he's got against big league hitters.
Apr 1 2015Rodon was reassigned to minor league camp Wednesday, Doug Padilla of ESPN Chicago reports.Rodon's reassignment was already a foregone conclusion, so the announcement was mostly just a formality. However, he remains the top pitching prospect in the White Sox organization, and an injury in the rotation or consistent poor starts by John Danks or Hector Noesi could lead to a major league surfacing for the youngster.
Mar 28 2015Manager Robin Ventura said Rodon will likely begin the season at Triple-A Charlotte, ESPN Chicago reports."You don't want to put him in there wiwth one pitch or two pitches," Ventura said. "You want him to be armed with the things that make him successful and you don't want him to come up here and be a flash and the pan and he's got to go down and work on stuff. He needs to be a complete product." Rodon's slider and fastball are MLB-ready, but his changeup is still not consistent enough for everyday use. With Chris Sale virtually healthy to start the season, and Hector Noesi looking competent, there is less of an impetus for Rodon to break camp in the majors while he could be tweaking his changeup in Triple-A. However, injury in the rotation or a string of bad starts by Noesi or John Danks could have him up before long.
Mar 26 2015Rodon struck out nine Royals in four innings in a Cactus League game Wednesday. This was easily Rodon's best start of the spring, as he accumulated the nine strikeouts against a lineup primarily comprised of MLB regulars. He also scattered four singles and did not allow a run over his four innings of work. He leads the team with 19 spring strikeouts, but he may still find himself on the outside looking in at a 25-man roster spot, especially with ace Chris Sale (ankle) on the mend.
Mar 24 2015Rodon is now in line to start Wednesday's Cactus League game, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports.Chris Beck was originally scheduled to get the start, so this late change will only lend further credence to the perception that Rodon has a chance to break camp as part of Chicago's starting rotation. One way or another, it seems clear that he will spend a good portion of the 2015 season pitching in the big leagues, and is therefore worth a late-round flier in most leagues.
Mar 16 2015Rodon allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in three innings against the Diamondbacks on Monday.Rodon struggled in the first innings of this start, yielding both runs and both walks in the game's first frame. However, he settled down over his next two frames, requiring just 27 pitches to record his next six outs. Rodon remains in the picture to make the White Sox's rotation out of camp, though his stay may only last as long as Chris Sale's injury.
Mar 12 2015White Sox executive vice president Kenny Williams said that Rodon has a chance to break the White Sox's rotation to start the season, the Daily Herald reports.Rodon allowed three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings Wednesday, but Williams said the team likes what they see from him so far. "The way he's come out here, he looks like a big-leaguer," Williams said. "We think we have a chance to do something special this year, so our April wins are going to be just as important as our September wins.... he's been impressive." This differs from earlier club statements, which hinted at a role in the bullpen or a start at Triple-A Charlotte. Ace Chris Sale (foot) is only expected to miss a start or two, so if Rodon does make the rotation, it will be at Hector Noesi's expense.
Mar 7 2015Rodon threw two scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Friday in his Cactus League debut. He allowed a hit and hit a batter, but he also struck out four against a lineup comprised primarily of MLB regulars. Both his fastball and slider were on Friday afternoon, but he held off on his developing changeup until his post-game bullpen session. Rodon figures to see plenty of innings this spring with Chris Sale (ankle) out, but he will need to pitch exceptionally well to make the club out of camp.
Mar 2 2015White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said he thinks Rodon has a better shot to make the rotation out of spring training if Chris Sale (foot) is not ready for the start of the season, the Chicago Tribune's Colleen Kane reports.Manager Robin Ventura would not confirm Cooper's hypothesis, but it makes plenty of sense, as Rodon will take Sale's Cactus League start on Friday, and was not previously scheduled for any spring starts. The fact that Cooper thinks Rodon would be ready to slot into the rotation under certain circumstances bodes well for his chances of being used as a starter at some point for the White Sox this season, even if he does not break camp with the team.
Mar 1 2015Rodon will take the injured Chris Sale's Cactus League start for the White Sox Friday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports. This is actually a decent surprise, as Hayes also reports Rodon wasn't scheduled for any spring starts before this. Take whatever symbolism you want, White Sox elite lefty of the present replaced by their possibly elite lefty of the future, but this just serves as further evidence that Rodon will be seeing the big leagues sometime in 2015.
Jan 22 2015White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper confirmed Thursday that Rodon will be used as a starter during spring training, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.Vice president of baseball operations Ken Williams suggested as much last month, but Rodon will indeed stretch out as a starter in the spring. Williams said that in December that a "multiple-inning bullpen role" was likely for Rodon, but Cooper said that nothing has been decided as to Rodon's role after spring training. It sounds like the performance of Rodon and others at the back of the rotation will ultimately determine where he ends up to start the year.
Dec 9 2014Rodon will prepare as a starter for now but a "multiple-inning bullpen role" is likely, according to White Sox vice president of baseball operations Ken Williams, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The White Sox have been mulling Rodon's 2015 role for several weeks and it seems they have settled on a long-relief assignment, though they've also been adamant that his long-term future is in the rotation. After being selected third overall in June's first-year player draft, Rodon posted a 2.92 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB in 24.2 innings between rookie ball, High-A Winston-Salem and Triple-A Charlotte. While the bullpen role would limit his short-term fantasy upside, there's still plenty to love for dynasty owners.
Nov 18 2014The White Sox are considering the possibility of using Rodon as a reliever in 2015, the Chicago Tribune reports.General manager Rick Hahn noted that Rodon's long-term future will be as a starter, but citing the success that the organization had with Chris Sale after using him as a reliever for a year and considering that the White Sox would have four lefties in their starting rotation if Rodon earns a spot, the bullpen seems like a realistic possibility. It's also possible that the White Sox will want to have Rodon stretched out as a starter at Triple-A Charlotte to begin the season, and simply call him up after ensuring that he doesn't accrue a full year of big league service time in 2015.
Sep 2 2014Rodon will not be called up by the White Sox this season, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. There was speculation that the team could bring Rodon up to the big club just months after taking him with the third overall pick in the first-year player draft, but GM Rick Hahn shot down the possibility Tuesday, saying "it just wasn't [the] right time in his development to bring him to the big leagues and ask him to get big league hitters out." Rodon, 21, posted a 2.92 ERA in nine appearances (six starts) between rookie-level Arizona, High-A Winston-Salem and Triple-A Charlotte in his first professional season and may very well be a rotation candidate coming out of spring training.
Aug 20 2014Rodon could be used as a starter if he gets called up by the White Sox in September, the Chicago Tribune's Colleen Kane reports. It was generally assumed that he would be used out of the bullpen, if he were to indeed rise to the big leagues the same year he was drafted No. 3 overall, but fantasy owners in standard formats will now want to put Rodon on watch lists. The White Sox used ace Chris Sale as a reliever when he shot through the system and finally made it to the big leagues, but apparently there's room for a different developmental plan with Rodon. In his first start with Triple-A Charlotte, Rodon gave up one run on one hit and three walks with three strikeouts in three innings.
Aug 16 2014Rodon has been promoted to Triple-A Charlotte, where he will make his International League debut Tuesday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.Continuing his meteoric rise through the White Sox's system, the expectation is that Rodon will make his debut on the south side of Chicago before the end of the 2014 season. He racked up a 15:5 K:BB over 9.2 innings along with a 1.86 ERA at High-A Winston-Salem in his first taste of full season professional ball.
Aug 8 2014There's a better than average chance Rodon will pitch in the big leagues this season, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports. This is the "Chris Sale development path" many have speculated about with regards to Rodon since the White Sox selected him third overall in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft. The White Sox aren't expected to factor in service time or minor league experience when deciding whether to promote Rodon to the big leagues, and if he continues to pitch like he did Thursday in his debut with High-A Winston-Salem (three scoreless innings), fantasy owners could get a crack at using Rodon the same year he was drafted. That said, Sale pitched exclusively out of the bullpen when he was first rushed to the major leagues in 2010, so it's unlikely the White Sox would use Rodon as a starer if he does get a cup of coffee with the big league team in September.
Jul 27 2014Rodon will head to High-A Winston-Salem this week, Keith Law of ESPN reports.Rodon made his professional debut in the Arizona Rookie League last week. In two games, he's allowed four hits and two earned runs across 3.0 total innings. He could make another appearance or two before heading to Winston-Salem, where he'll play out the rest of the season in a relief role after a heavy workload as a starter at North Carolina State.
Jul 18 2014Rodon is headed to the Arizona Rookie League and will make his professional debut next week, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports. After Rodon inked his rookie deal last week, it was reported that he'd start at High-A Winston-Salem, but it seems the club has had a slight change of heart. While the left-hander will instead start at rookie ball, it will probably only be a matter of weeks before Rodon moves up a rung on the minor league ladder. The third overall pick in the 2014 amateur draft posted a 436:117 K:BB and allowed 12 homers in 346 innings in his three seasons at NC State.
Jul 10 2014The White Sox have come to terms with Rodon on a deal worth $6.4 million, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports. He will take a physical Thursday before the deal becomes official. The deal is reportedly worth $700,000 more than the recommended slot for the No. 3 overall pick, but Rodon was generally regarded as the best arm coming into the season, and he was the most MLB-ready pitcher in the draft. He will start his professional career at High-A Winston Salem, which should be a comfortable spot for him given that he just wrapped up his college career up the road at NC State. He could join the MLB rotation as soon as 2015 if everything breaks right.
Jun 22 2014Assistant general manager Buddy Bell said negotiations with Rodon will "probably" go down to the wire, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Rodon is the only one of the team's top-10 selections from June's amateur draft yet to sign, and he is one of the only two top-10 overall picks yet to sign with his drafting organization. The club remains optimistic that Rodon will sign rather than return to NC State for his senior year, but every week he doesn't sign takes away from his development time.
Jun 8 2014General manager Rick Hahn said he is not concerned about signing Rodon even though the No. 3 overall pick is being advised by Scott Boras, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. There is a chance that Rodon (or Boras), who was drafted third overall after spending much of the offseason as the projected No. 1 player, will want a contract larger than the $5.7 million allotted to the No. 3 slot. The White Sox do not have the greatest history of negotiating with Boras, but they would not have taken him third overall if they thought signing would be an issue. Rodon already has two major league-ready pitches, so there is a chance he shows up in the big league bullpen later this season (a la Chris Sale in 2010) as long as the club has no concerns about his collegiate workload.
Jun 5 2014The White Sox have selected Rodon with the third overall pick in the 2014 first-year player draft. In his third and final season at North Carolina State, Rodon's stock dipped slightly as he wasn't quite as dominant as he was in his sophomore campaign. In 14 starts, Rodon closed out his college career with 117 strikeouts in 98.2 innings (10.7 K/9) while holding the opposition to a 2.01 ERA and posting the lowest walk rate (2.8 BB/9) of his three seasons with the Wolfpack. Rodon's best pitch in his slider, a plus-grade wipeout pitch that he throws in the mid-80s. He also features a plus fastball (91-94 mph, touches 97) with good movement, and a changeup that is beginning to develop into an average third offering. North Carolina State manager Elliott Avent allowed Rodon to rack up high pitch counts in some of his starts, leaving some question as to how much of a workload he'll see this summer upon signing.
May 10 2014Rodon, the projected No. 1 overall pick in the first-year player draft in June, struck out nine and walked one while allowing an unearned run on four hits over seven innings in what will likely be his final home start at N.C. State on Friday night.According to Jim Shonerd of Baseball America, Rodon hit 94 mph with his 102nd pitch before finishing his ninth strikeout with an 88 mph slider. After a few bumpy outings earlier in the season, Rodon has pitched very well down the stretch, and now has a 102:28 K:BB with a 1.87 ERA over 12 starts (86.2 innings) for the Wolfpack. At 6-foot-2 and 234 pounds, the left-hander projects as a frontline starter at the big league level in the not-so-distant future.
