Jun 29 2025Stroman (1-1) earned the win Sunday against the A's, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was sharp in his return from a two-and-a-half-month stint on the IL. The right-hander blanked the A's through four innings before ultimately allowing a lone run on a Willie MacIver solo homer in the fifth. It's certainly an encouraging sign for Stroman and the Yankees, after he struggled to an 11.57 ERA in his first three starts (9.1 innings) this year. Stroman is currently lined up to face the Mets on the road in his next outing.
Jun 27 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters after Friday's 3-0 win over the Athletics that Stroman (knee) will come off the 15-day injured list and start in Sunday's series finale, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been sidelined since April 12 due to left knee inflammation, and while he has struggled during his rehab assignment, his call-up is out of necessity after Ryan Yarbrough (oblique) was placed on the 15-day IL this past Sunday. Stroman coughed up 12 runs over 9.1 major-league innings prior to landing on the IL, and his efforts in the minors haven't been much better, as at that level he has allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits and five walks while striking out nine across 10.1 innings.
Jun 22 2025Stroman (knee) struck out four and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and one walk across 3.1 innings in his second rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman built up to 55 pitches in Wednesday's outing and may need just one more start in the minors before making his return from the 15-day injured list. His next rehab outing is scheduled to take place Tuesday, and he's slated to throw approximately 70 pitches in that appearance, per MLB.com. Despite logging an 11.57 ERA and 2.04 WHIP over 9.1 innings in his three starts with the Yankees before landing on the shelf April 12 due to left knee inflammation, Stroman could have a spot in the big-league rotation waiting for him once he's activated. Ryan Yarbrough had been performing well as the Yankees' No. 5 starter in recent weeks, but he was placed on the IL on Sunday due to an oblique strain and is unlikely to be activated before Stroman.
Jun 12 2025Stroman (knee) covered 3.1 innings and struck out four batters while allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks in his first rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Considering Stroman hadn't pitched in a game since April 11 after being shut down due to left knee inflammation, his performance in Wednesday's outing with Somerset was about as good as the Yankees could have expected following a lengthy layoff. The right-hander faced 13 batters in the start and pumped in 27 of his 46 pitches for strikes. The Yankees are letting Stroman build back up as a starter, but he'll likely need to continue to find success over his subsequent rehab outings in order to unseat Ryan Yarbrough in the rotation once he's activated from the 15-day injured list. Since stepping in as the Yankees' No. 5 starter May 3, Yarbrough owns a respectable 4.20 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 30 innings over his six starts.
Jun 11 2025Stroman (knee) is scheduled to make his first rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Somerset. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman will be pitching in a game for the first time since April 11 after a lingering left knee issue has kept him on the shelf for nearly two months. Given the length of his absence, Stroman will need multiple rehab outings in the minors to build up his pitch count as the Yankees determine whether he's deserving of a spot in the rotation once he's activated from the injured list. Though he broke camp as a member of the rotation, Stroman struggled in his three starts prior to landing on the injured list (11.57 ERA, 2.04 WHIP in 9.1 innings), and Ryan Yarbrough has mostly been effective since stepping in as New York's No. 5 starter in mid-May.
Jun 5 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Stroman (knee) threw another live batting practice session Thursday and could begin a rehab assignment soon, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Boone also noted that Stroman is being built up as a starting pitcher rather than being shifted to relief. That suggests Stroman's rehab assignment could be a lengthy one, given that he hasn't pitched in a game since mid-April. There's no guarantee Stroman will join the Yankees' rotation once activated, but the club wants to keep its options open.
Jun 1 2025Stroman (knee) tossed live batting practice in Los Angeles on Saturday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman threw around 30 pitches and two innings, marking the first time he'd faced live hitters since May 9. The right-hander "looked sharp" according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who also indicated that he's unsure what the next step in Stroman's rehab will be. His last game action came April 11, so he'll almost certainly need a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated off the IL. The veteran hurler had been part of New York's rotation prior to getting hurt, but it's not certain that he'll return to that role upon activation.
May 25 2025Stroman (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, per MLB.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has struggled to overcome soreness in his left knee, but tests have shown no structural damage, and he threw a side session May 24. Should the right-hander get through Tuesday's bullpen without a setback, he could be in line for a return to the Yankees in the first half of June. It's unclear if Stroman would immediately return to the rotation, however, as both Will Warren and Ryan Yarbrough have been pitching well, while JT Brubaker (ribs) recently began a rehab assignment and Luis Gil (lat) is approaching a return to the mound as well.
May 11 2025Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Stroman (knee) has been experiencing some discomfort after throwing a simulated game Friday, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander is working his way back from inflammation in his left knee and appeared to be closing in on the start of a rehab assignment, but the renewed discomfort will pause his progress for at least a few days. Stroman received a cortisone injection for his knee shortly after landing on the injured list April 12, and it's concerning that he's still having some issues a month later.
May 5 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Stroman (knee) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's finally a notable step forward in Stroman's recovery from left knee inflammation, as this will be his first time throwing off the bump since he went on the 15-day injured list in mid-April. He's surely require a rehab assignment and it's unclear when Stroman might be ready to pitch in games.
Apr 21 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Stroman is still "feeling some things" in his injured left knee and is likely to require more than 15 days on the injured list, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman began playing catch a few days ago, but he's still not 100 percent and it's not clear when he might be ready to throw off a mound again. The right-hander is eligible to return in late April, but it sounds like it will be at least early May and perhaps longer before he'll be ready to return.
Apr 18 2025Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Stroman (knee) has begun playing catch, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman received a cortisone shot over the weekend to address the inflammation in his left knee, and Friday appears to be the first time he's done any sort of throwing since he landed on the injured list Saturday. There's still no telling how much time the 33-year-old will need for a full recovery, though the Yankees may not be in much of a hurry to bring him back after he began the year with an 11.57 ERA and 2.04 WHIP across 9.1 innings over his first three starts.
Apr 14 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Stroman received a cortisone shot over the weekend to address inflammation in his left knee, Larry Fleisher of the Associated Press reports. "The MRI was good, but he had some swelling in there somewhere," Boone said of Stroman. "So try to eliminate that, hopefully get him ramped up pretty quick and, hopefully, something that really helps him move it forward." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: New York placed Stroman on the 15-day injured list Saturday after he failed to escape the first inning and was limited to 46 pitches a day earlier in a rain-affected start against the Giants. Boone noted that he was unsure if the poor weather exacerbated the discomfort in Stroman's left knee, which he previously had surgically repaired in 2015. Though the MRI confirmed that Stroman isn't dealing with any structural damage to his knee, the right-hander could still require more than the minimum 15 days to fully heal up from the injury. Stroman had struggled to an 11.57 ERA, 2.04 WHIP and 7:7 K:BB in 9.1 innings over his three starts, so the Yankees likely won't look to rush him back from the IL until they're confident that he's 100 percent healthy.
Apr 12 2025The Yankees placed Stroman on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left knee inflammation. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman said his knee was bothering him during his start against San Francisco on Friday, during which he gave up five earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning. He'll now officially miss a few starts to allow his knee to fully recover, though it's unclear if he's facing more than a minimum-length stay. In the meantime, Allan Winans will come up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the open roster spot.
Apr 11 2025Stroman reported problems with his left knee after leaving his start Friday against the Giants, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman's knee injury may help explain his ugly performance Friday, as he was chased out of the game after giving up five earned runs on four hits and three walks in just two-thirds of an inning. He received X-rays shortly after his removal, and more will be known regarding his immediate availability once the results come back.
Apr 5 2025Stroman did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-4 win over the Pirates, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was pulled after a rough fourth inning, during which he walked three batters and gave up four runs. He generated only five whiffs on 74 pitches and didn't stick around long enough to benefit from a six-run outburst by the Yankees in the fifth frame. The 33-year-old owns a 7.27 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB across 8.2 innings and lines up to face the Giants next weekend.
Mar 30 2025Stroman didn't factor in the decision Sunday against Milwaukee after allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The New York offense delivered double-digit runs for the second straight game, but Stroman was unable to stick around long enough to qualify for the victory. Still, it was a decent season debut for the right-hander, with most of the damage against him coming via a two-run homer from Jake Bauers. A road matchup with the Pirates likely waits for Stroman next weekend.
Mar 19 2025Stroman tossed three scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Wednesday, allowing one hit and issuing one walk while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The only hit Stroman allowed was an infield single, though he did display a bit of wildness by walking two batters and plunking another. That led to him needing 64 pitches to get through three frames, but the overall results were mostly positive as the veteran righty prevented the Phillies from crossing the plate. Stroman struggled early this spring, but he's since bounced back and has a tolerable 4.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 9.2 spring innings. He's a leading candidate to open the season in the Yankees' rotation, due in part to long-term injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat).
Mar 6 2025With Luis Gil (lat) set to miss extended time at the beginning of the campaign, Stroman is likely to be part of the Yankees' season-opening rotation, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gil isn't expected to be able to resume throwing for at least six weeks, which means that he isn't likely to be able to enter New York's rotation until sometime in June, at the earliest. As a result, Stroman, who has 252 career regular-season starts in 261 total outings to his name, is the logical choice to fill Gil's starting spot. Stroman posted a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 154.2 regular-season innings covering 30 appearances last year, and he may have to pitch well early on to keep his rotation role. Among the pitchers who could push Stroman is rookie Will Warren, who struggled in a six-outing cup of coffee in the majors last season but has looked great in spring training so far, allowing just one run while registering an 11:2 K:BB over eight frames.
Mar 2 2025Stroman allowed four runs on four hits while striking out one batter over 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against Atlanta on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman gave up solo homers to Austin Riley and Matt Olson in the first inning and exited with two outs in the third after giving up a pair of doubles in the frame. The veteran hurler has been adamant about wanting to be in the rotation rather than coming out of the bullpen this season, and there may be a starting spot available with Luis Gil's Opening Day status in question due to a shoulder injury. However, Stroman hasn't made much of a case for such a role this spring, as he's posted a 9.82 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 3.2 frames covering two appearances.
Feb 24 2025Stroman, who had been scheduled to start Tuesday against the Twins in Fort Myers, will stay back in Tampa to pitch live batting practice instead, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman logged a scoreless inning with two hits allowed and one strikeout in his first start of the spring last week. If Clarke Schmidt is able to put his back issue in the rearview mirror, Stroman will likely open the year in a long-relief role, although he has been vocal this spring about wanting to start.
Feb 19 2025Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Stroman will start Friday's Grapefruit League opener versus the Rays, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Just under a week after he made a delayed arrival to spring training and told reporters that he had no intention of pitching out of the bullpen in 2025, Stroman will end up getting the starting nod for the Yankees' exhibition opener. Stroman looks like he'll remain on a starter's throwing schedule throughout the spring, but unless he's traded, he likely won't have a path to a rotation spot unless at least one of Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt isn't available to begin the season. Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Boone said Wednesday that Schmidt is dealing with a "cranky back," but the injury doesn't yet appear to be anything that will jeopardize Schmidt's availability for Opening Day.
Feb 14 2025Stroman reported to Yankees camp Friday and told reporters "I won't pitch out of the bullpen," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Stroman did not report with other pitchers and catchers earlier this week, he technically didn't have to report until Feb. 22, per the terms of MLB's Collective Bargaining Agreement. As far as Stroman's role goes, while he insisted that "I'm a starter," there wouldn't currently appear to be any room for him in the Yankees' rotation. That can change, of course, with an injury or a trade. Stroman held a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 154.2 regular-season innings in 2024, which covered 29 starts and one relief appearance.
Feb 13 2025Stroman has yet to report to spring training as of Thursday, and the Yankees haven't yet determined when he might be ready to participate in workouts, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: According to the terms of MLB's collective bargaining agreement, Stroman isn't required to take the field for spring training until Feb. 22, but his voluntary absence is noteworthy with all other pitchers and catchers having reported to camp. Stroman was still present in Tampa on Tuesday to take his pre-camp physical, and he's expected to continue working out on his own over the next few days before joining the Yankees. The 33-year-old's decision not to report to camp comes while his role entering the 2025 season is uncertain, after the Yankees signed Max Fried to an eight-year deal over the winter to give the team a projected five-man rotation that also includes Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil. Unless the Yankees head into Opening Day with a six-man rotation or lose one of the other five pitchers to an injury, Stroman could find himself in the bullpen after he turned in a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 154.2 regular-season innings during his first season with New York in 2024.
Oct 14 2024Stroman is on the Yankees' roster for the ALCS versus the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was left off the ALDS roster but will be carried on the ALCS roster as a long reliever. The veteran right-hander posted a 4.31 ERA and 113:60 K:BB over 154.2 innings during the regular season, covering 29 starts and one relief appearance.
Oct 5 2024Stroman is not on the Yankees' roster for the ALDS against Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman struggled during the regular season, posting a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 154.2 innings. He was briefly moved to the bullpen in mid-September but returned to a starting role for his final appearance of the campaign after Nester Cortes (elbow) landed on the injured list. The Yankees aren't likely to need more than four starters in the ALDS, and the team elected to roll with Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt ahead of Stroman.
Sep 26 2024Stroman (10-9) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up six runs on 10 hits over 3.1 innings as the Yankees fell 9-7 to the Orioles. He struck out one without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander's contact-heavy approach betrayed him, as the O's began the game with six straight singles and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning that they would never relinquish. Stroman is limping to the finish line on the regular season, posting a 6.59 ERA, 1.87 WHIP and 21:6 K:BB over his last six appearances and 27.1 innings, and he seems likely to get shifted to the bullpen in the playoffs.
Sep 25 2024Stroman will start Wednesday's game against the Orioles in place of Nestor Cortes (elbow), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman had been demoted to the bullpen earlier this month and picked up a three-inning save in his lone relief appearance Sept. 17 in Seattle. He's now needed back in the rotation, at least temporarily, with Cortes out through at least the ALDS. Stroman threw 64 pitches in the outing versus the Mariners and shouldn't have much of a workload restriction Wednesday given that his other 28 appearances this season were starts.
Sep 18 2024Stroman picked up his second career save in Tuesday's win over the Mariners, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman made his first appearance out of the bullpen since the Yankees announced the move over the weekend and he picked up his first save since 2014, which was his rookie season. He gave up at least a hit in all three innings he pitched, including a solo home run to Luke Raley in the eighth, but the game was comfortably out of reach already. Stroman should continue to operate in a long-relief role down the stretch unless an opportunity opens up for him to be reinserted back into the rotation.
Sep 13 2024Stroman is moving to the bullpen and will be available in relief Sunday against the Red Sox, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees will go with a five-man rotation this next turn through and manager Aaron Boone said they could go with a five-man rotation the next time through as well. Stroman figures to serve as a long reliever who could get a spot start in the final week if the Yankees are setting things up for the postseason.
Sep 11 2024Stroman (10-8) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings as the Yankees fell 5-0 to the Royals. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander didn't pitch poorly, tossing 56 of 89 pitches for strikes, but Seth Lugo was dominant Tuesday and the Yankees managed only three singles in support of Stroman. He's completed six innings only twice in nine outings since the All-Star break, stumbling to a 5.40 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB through 43.1 innings over that stretch. Stroman will look for a better result in his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Seattle.
Sep 4 2024Stroman (10-7) allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over 3.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman had gone at least five innings in each of his previous four starts, but the Rangers got to him early Wednesday. This was the sixth start in a row in which Stroman didn't give up a home run, which is progress since he allowed eight long balls across the six starts before that. The veteran right-hander is now at a 4.03 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 105:58 K:BB over 143 innings through 27 starts. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Royals.
Aug 30 2024Stroman (10-6) earned the win Friday against the Cardinals, allowing two runs on nine hits and no walks over seven innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 33-year-old picked up his ninth quality start with this 98-pitch performance despite yielding nine runs, matching a season-worst set on July 27 against Boston. However, Stroman only allowed one extra-base hit -- a Paul Goldschmidt double in the second -- as he notched his second walk-free outing of the season. This marks the fifth time with double-digit wins in his 10-year career. The veteran righty has now pitched to a 3.81 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 102:57 K:BB across 139.1 innings this season. He currently lines up to face the Rangers on the road for his next start.
Aug 25 2024Stroman (9-6) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings to earn the win over the Rockies on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was a little off Sunday, throwing 56 of 97 pitches for strikes, but he had ample run support to pick up his second win over his last three outings. He's gone at least five innings in three straight starts after doing so just two times across six appearances between June 28 and Aug. 2. The veteran right-hander is now at a 3.88 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 97:57 K:BB through 132.1 innings over 25 starts this season. His 3.9 BB/9 is by far the worst of his career, and his 6.6 K/9 is his lowest mark in a full campaign, which at least partially explains his inconsistency this year. Stroman is projected to make his next start at home versus the Cardinals.
Aug 19 2024Stroman did not factor into the decision in Sunday's loss to the Tigers, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman had one of his best outings in recent memory Sunday. It was his first time reaching six innings since June 22 and his fourth time this season shutting the opponent out and reaching six innings. He exited the game with a narrow 1-0 lead that eventually slipped away in the ninth. Stroman has now allowed just one run over his last two starts after allowing 10 combined in his two starts prior. His strikeout averages this year are one of the lowest of his career and his walks are up, but he's trending towards a fifth straight season with an ERA below 4.00. For the year, Stroman owns a 3.82 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 92:54 K:BB in 127.1 innings. He lines up to face the Rockies at home over the weekend his next time out.
Aug 12 2024Stroman (8-6) earned the win over Texas on Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out one batter over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman's one punchout wasn't ideal from a fantasy perspective, but it didn't impact his ability to notch his first victory since June 22. The veteran righty had posted a 7.56 ERA and 1.92 WHIP during the six-game winless stretch, so he'll look to Sunday's performance as a potential turnaround point. Stroman's next outing is tentatively lined up to take place in Detroit this weekend.
Aug 7 2024Stroman's next scheduled start has been pushed back to Sunday against the Rangers as he works through some mechanical issues, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman's next turn would have been Friday, but the Yankees will give him a couple extra days as he irons some things out with his delivery. The right-hander has posted a 7.56 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over his last six starts and lasted just 2.2 innings his last time out versus the Blue Jays. Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole will each move up a day to start on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Aug 3 2024Stroman (7-6) took the loss Friday, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and a walk over 2.2 innings as the Yankees fell 8-5 to the Blue Jays. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Facing the team he spent the first five-plus seasons of his big-league career with, Stroman got tagged for three runs in the first inning and four more in the third before getting the hook. The veteran right-hander managed to avoid serving up a home run -- the first time he's done so in a Yankee Stadium start since May 3 against the Tigers -- but it was still another rough home outing for Stroman, who has a 5.34 ERA in 59 innings at home this year but a 2.83 ERA in 57.1 innings on the road. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, which also comes at Yankee Stadium next week against the Angels.
Jul 27 2024Stroman allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits and a walk while failing to record a strikeout over 3.1 innings in a no-decision Saturday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has failed to complete five innings in three of his last five starts, and he's lost the two outings in that span to reach that threshold. The Red Sox did their damage against him in the first two innings, and Stroman exited at 60 pitches (34 strikes) after just 10 outs. For the season, he's carrying a 3.64 ERA, but that's up from 3.29 at the end of June. He's added a 1.35 WHIP and 83:48 K:BB through 113.2 innings over 21 starts. The veteran right-hander is tentatively projected to make his next start at home versus the Blue Jays.
Jul 21 2024Stroman (7-5) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits over 5.1 innings against the Rays. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman allowed a couple of solo homers but was otherwise efficient during Sunday's outing. He's struggled with both the long ball and bases on balls this year but while Stroman upped his home runs allowed to 17, he didn't allow a free pass for the first time all season after entering the contest with a BB/9 of 4.0. Stroman has particularly struggled since the start of June with only one quality start and a 5.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over eight starts spanning 41 innings. He's scheduled to take the hill again next weekend when the Yankees head to Boston to take on their bitter rivals.
Jul 11 2024Stroman came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Rays, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Yankees staked Stroman to a 2-0 lead through four innings, but the veteran right-hander couldn't hang around long enough to record the win. Instead, he got the hook after 84 pitches (49 strikes), leaving the mound with the bases loaded and needing the New York bullpen to bail him out. Stroman has completed six innings only once in his last seven outings, delivering a shaky 5.30 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 23:18 K:BB through 35.2 innings over that stretch. He'll now get an extended rest, as he isn't scheduled to make another start before the All-Star break.
Jul 4 2024Stroman (7-4) took the loss against Cincinnati on Thursday, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six batters over five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman struggled to keep the ball in the park Thursday -- of the five hits he allowed, three were long balls, and all five of the runs he yielded came on home runs. The right-hander hadn't been prone to the long ball coming in, as he hadn't given up a homer in three of his prior four stats. Stroman hasn't been pitching particularly well of late, though, as he has a 6.43 ERA across 21 frames covering his past four outings. The five earned runs he allowed against the Reds tied a season-high mark.
Jun 28 2024Stroman came away with a no-decision in Friday's 16-5 rout of the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander made his big-league with the Jays in 2014 and had trouble keeping his composure in his return to Toronto, getting the hook after 88 pitches (52 strikes) and not sticking around long enough to benefit from a season-best offensive explosion by the Yankees. Stroman completed six innings only once in five June starts, but on the year he still sports a 3.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 70:43 K:BB through 95.2 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Reds.
Jun 22 2024Stroman (7-3) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings to earn the win over Atlanta on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was sharp in his first quality start across four outings in June. He gave up a solo home run to Marcell Ozuna in the first inning and a two-run blast to Travis d'Arnaud in the seventh. Stroman has walked multiple batters in five straight starts, which has led to some recent inconsistency. He's at a 3.15 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and 67:40 K:BB through 91.1 innings over 16 starts this season. The right-hander is projected to make his next start at Toronto.
Jun 16 2024Stroman (6-3) allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: In addition to allowing 11 baserunners, Stroman was also on the mound for six of the Red Sox's franchise-best nine steals in the contest. Stroman has had two bad outings and one good one through three starts in June, though Sunday marked his first loss since May 9. The right-hander has maintained a 3.08 ERA despite a 1.30 WHIP and 61:38 K:BB over 84.2 innings through 15 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus Atlanta in his next outing.
Jun 11 2024Stroman (6-2) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing four hits and three walks with one strikeout across 5.2 scoreless innings against Kansas City. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing a season-high five runs in his last start, Stroman blanked the Royals on Tuesday. However, he struggled with command, finding the strike zone on just 54 of his 102 pitches while issuing three walks. The 33-year-old has generated five combined strikeouts in his last three starts, a stretch in which he's walked seven batters and hit two more. On the year, Stroman owns a 2.82 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP across 79.2 innings. He's lined up to face the Red Sox at Fenway on Sunday.
Jun 6 2024Stroman allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Minnesota on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was handed a 7-2 lead through four innings but couldn't go deep enough to qualify for the victory. He allowed two doubles and a walk while also hitting a batter in the fifth frame, retiring only two batters before he was pulled. This was a big letdown for Stroman after he notched four consecutive quality starts while posting a 1.01 ERA over his previous 26.2 innings coming into Thursday. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, which tentatively lines up to take place in Kansas City next week.
May 31 2024Stroman (5-2) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two over 7.1 innings to earn the win over the Giants on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has pitched into the eighth inning in two of his last four starts, allowing just three runs over 26.2 innings in that span. During his hot stretch, he's posted a 15:7 K:BB, but that's about the only weak spot in his game right now. Stroman is at a 2.73 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 55:29 K:BB over 69.1 innings across 12 starts. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Twins.
May 26 2024Stroman (4-2) picked up the win over the Padres on Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk over six shutout innings while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman actually allowed the leadoff man to reach in three of his first four innings of work but was able to pitch his way around it on each occasion to prevent any damage. The right-hander has now hurled three quality starts in a row and hasn't allowed more than three hits in four of his last five outings. Stroman carries a 1.78 ERA in May after Saturday's win and has won three of his last four decisions (spanning seven starts).
May 20 2024Stroman yielded a run on three hits and a walk over 7.1 innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out six during the win over Seattle. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman cruised through seven shutout frames before coughing up a solo homer to Dominic Canzone in the eighth inning. Stroman was in line for his fourth win before the Yankees blew the lead in the ninth. He's produced a 2.22 ERA over his last four starts, dropping his season ERA to 3.05 through 56 innings. He's turned in two straight quality starts after failing to finish at least six frames in his previous six appearances. Stroman is in line to start in San Diego this weekend.
May 15 2024Stroman (3-2) earned the win Wednesday over the Twins, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out two over six shutout innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was Stroman's second scoreless start of the season, as well as his third quality start. He entered Wednesday with nine runs allowed over his previous 15 innings across a three-start winless skid. The right-hander trimmed his ERA to 3.33 with a 1.42 WHIP and 42:25 K:BB over 48.2 innings through nine starts this season. Stroman's 4.6 BB/9 remains a concern -- it's by far the worst of his career, though his 7.8 K/9 is line with his career norms. Stroman is projected to make his next start at home versus the Mariners.
May 9 2024Stroman (2-2) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman got off to a poor beginning Thursday, giving up three first-inning runs on homers by Yordan Alvarez and Jon Singleton. He rebounded to keep Houston off the scoreboard over the following three frames before being tagged for another run in the fifth. Stroman at least allowed New York to keep within striking range, but this was his second time giving up four runs over his past three starts. The veteran right-hander has been only moderately effective for the Yankees thus far, posting a 3.80 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 40:22 K:BB through 42.2 innings.
May 4 2024Stroman came away with a no-decision Friday against the Tigers after giving up one earned run on three hits and five walks while striking out three batters across 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite the Tigers' ability to reach base regularly against Stroman, a bases-loaded walk from Colt Keith in the sixth inning was the only way Detroit was able to break through on the scoreboard against him. A quiet night from New York's offense also put Stroman at risk of taking his second loss of the season, but a two-run ninth inning allowed the Yankees to steal the victory from Detroit while handing the right-hander a no-decision. Stroman, who has now allowed 10 walks over his past two outings, is tentatively scheduled to start again Thursday against Houston.
Apr 28 2024Stroman pitched four innings, giving up four runs on six hits and five walks while striking out four in Sunday's 15-5 win over the Brewers. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was able to survive four scoreless frames to open Sunday's outing before the wheels fell off in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed all five batters he faced in the inning to reach base, including a three-run home run by Jake Bauers, which knotted the game up at 4-4. The 32-year-old has now surrendered five total homers over his last four starts after not giving one up in either of his first two outings in 2024. Stroman now owns a 3.69 ERA and 1.42 WHIP with 32 strikeouts over 31.2 innings in six starts this season, and he's tentatively set to return to the mound Friday home for a matchup against the Tigers.
Apr 24 2024Stroman (2-1) picked up the win Tuesday, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in a 4-3 win over the A's. He struck out nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old righty came close to his first double-digit strikeout performance since he was a rookie in 2014, but Stroman left the mound after 97 pitches (64 strikes) as some early inefficiency caught up to him. He's failed to complete six innings in any of his last three outings, but Stroman will take a 2.93 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 28:10 K:BB through 27.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Milwaukee.
Apr 17 2024Stroman did not factor into the decision Wednesday against Toronto, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over. 5.1 innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Daulton Varsho's two-run homer in the second inning accounted for the only runs against Stroman, but the Yankees couldn't take the lead until the ninth, leaving the right-hander with a no-decision. Stroman hasn't earned a win since his first start of the year against Houston -- overall, he's 1-1 with a solid 2.42 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 19:9 K:BB through his first four starts (22.1 innings). Stroman's currently slated to face the A's at home in his next start.
Apr 10 2024Stroman (1-1) took the loss Wednesday against Miami, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All of the damage against Stroman came during a four-run third inning in which he surrendered a walk and two singles to the first three batters he faced before being tagged by Jake Burger for a three-run homer. His struggles with command and some long at-bats by Miami resulted in Stroman failing to reach the sixth inning for the first time all season. Through 17 innings, Stroman owns a 2.12 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 17 strikeouts. He's in line for a start next week in Toronto.
Apr 5 2024Stroman (1-0) did not factor into the decision Friday against the Blue Jays, allowing three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was stellar in his home debut with the Yankees, blanking Toronto over six innings. However, New York failed to provide the right-hander with any support offensively in an eventual 3-0 loss. Stroman has yet to allow a run through his first two starts this season, allowing just seven hits and three walks over 12 innings. He's currently lined up to face the Marlins at home in his next outing.
Mar 30 2024Stroman (1-0) picked up the win Saturday in Houston, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Astros plated two runs in the second inning following an Oswaldo Cabrera error and added another in the fifth on errors from Anthony Volpe and Stroman. The right-hander was sharp, though, picking up 13 swinging strikes on his 101 pitches as he won his first start in pinstripes. Stroman is lined up to face the Blue Jays at home in his next outing.
Mar 26 2024Stroman finished the Grapefruit League slate with a 2.61 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 16:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings across five starts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman signed a two-year deal with the Yankees in January, and his role with the club took on added importance when Gerrit Cole was diagnosed with an elbow injury that will likely cost him at least the first two months of the season. Though Stroman drew some criticism for turning down an opportunity to take Cole's place as the team's Opening Day starter, his reason for doing so was tied to sticking to his pitching schedule, per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, and the right-handed hurler remains a critical component of New York's chance at success this season. Stroman certainly appears ready for the beginning of the campaign after finishing spring play with six shutout innings against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Mar 6 2024Stroman adjusted his hand position in Saturday's Grapefruit League outing against the Orioles and is "probably tinkering with something every single time he walks to the mound," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Hoch notes that Stroman held his hands a bit higher in the outing, and while it's unclear how much of an impact that made on his performance, the veteran hurler's results were excellent -- he tossed four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and no walks while striking out three batters. That was considerably better than his first start this spring, when he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 2.1 frames against Philadelphia. Stroman is set to slot into the middle of New York's rotation behind Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon this season after signing a two-year deal with the team in January.
Jan 11 2024Stroman signed a two-year, $37 million deal with the Yankees on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. He also has a vesting option for a third year. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman opted out of the final year of his contract with the Cubs worth $21 million to become a free agent this offseason. Though he'll sacrifice a bit from that mark in annual value, he locked in at least one additional year of security. Stroman has dealt with injuries in the last two seasons, but he has maintained an ERA of 3.50 or below in three of the last four campaigns and is a strong addition to a rotation that already features Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon.
Nov 4 2023Stroman opted out of his contract with the Cubs and became a free agent Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was set to make $21 million during the final season of the three-year deal he signed in 2021, but he will forego the money and instead test the free agent market during the offseason. Across 136.2 innings, the 32-year-old righty put up a 3.95 ERA -- his worst mark since 2018 -- but he's been reliable enough throughout his career to warrant a multi-year contract.
Sep 28 2023Stroman (10-9) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out two without walking a batter over two innings, taking the loss versus Atlanta on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has pitched eight innings over four appearances since returning from a stint on the injured list, allowing eight runs (five earned) in that span. The right-hander appears set to be a relief option if the Cubs are able to secure a wild-card spot. Stroman is at a 3.95 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 119:52 K:BB through 136.2 innings across 27 outings (25 starts) this season.
Sep 25 2023Stroman is slated to start Thursday's game in Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After making his first two appearances as a reliever following his activation from the 15-day injured list Sept. 15, Stroman rejoined the rotation Saturday. However, he was capped at three innings while taking a no-decision against Colorado, giving up three runs on five hits and one walk. Though Stroman will make a second straight turn through the rotation, he could be capped at around 75-to-90 pitches after building up to 64 on Saturday. The Cubs could once again choose to deploy Stroman in tandem with Javier Assad, who tossed four scoreless frames in relief of the right-hander against the Rockies.
Sep 23 2023Stroman did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over three innings against Colorado. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman wasn't particularly sharp in his first start since landing on the injured list Aug. 2, needing 64 pitches (39 strikes) to make it through three frames and allowing three earned runs in the second inning. In the first half of the season, he posted a 2.96 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 112.2 innings, earning Stroman an All-Star nod for the second time in his nine-year MLB career. However, the second half hasn't been so kind to the veteran righty, as he endured a six-week stay on the injured list and has posted a 9.41 ERA with a 1.95 WHIP across 22 innings since the All-Star break. If he remains in the rotation, Stroman currently lines up to face the Brewers on the road in the Cubs' final regular-season series.
Sep 22 2023Stroman will start Saturday's game in Chicago against the Rockies, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been working in relief since he returned last Friday from a lengthy absence due to hip inflammation and a rib cage cartilage fracture. He didn't throw more than 31 pitches in a single outing during his stay in the bullpen, but the right-hander has presumably stretched himself out in side sessions ahead of jumping back into the rotation. Colorado's offense struggles away from Coors Field, sitting dead last in MLB in road wRC+ at 75, so Stroman might carry some fantasy streaming appeal in Saturday's matchup even if his workload is capped.
Sep 17 2023Stroman struck out one and allowed a hit and an unearned run over an inning of relief in Saturday's 7-6 loss to the Diamondbacks in 13 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman worked out of the bullpen for the second straight day, giving the righty three total innings of relief work after not pitching in a game since the end of July. Stroman was arguably the team's best starter earlier in the season, but at this point, the Cubs seem content using him as a reliever as he builds back up following the absence. He could give the rotation a boost if the team makes the playoffs, though fantasy managers may not be able to take advantage.
Sep 15 2023Stroman (ribs) allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three over two scoreless innings of relief in Friday's 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs were down 6-0 when Stroman entered the game, though he kept it close enough for them to threaten with a ninth-inning rally. The right-hander hadn't made a relief appearance since his rookie year in 2014, though this may have been a way for the Cubs to get him some game action prior to a return to the rotation. He's at a 3.79 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 53:11 K:BB through 130.2 innings over 24 appearances (23 starts) this season. The Cubs haven't specified when Stroman will make his first start after a six-week absence.
Sep 10 2023Stroman (ribs) will throw a session of live batting practice Monday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 32-year-old threw 29 pitches in his first session of live BP on Thursday, and he should continue building on that workload Monday. If all goes well, Stroman could soon be cleared for a minor-league rehab assignment before rejoining the big-league rotation.
Sep 7 2023Stroman (ribs) threw a 29-pitch live batting practice session Thursday in Arizona, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has now advanced to facing live hitters as he works back from a rib cage cartilage fracture. On the shelf since late July, the 32-year-old right-hander appears to be nearing a minor-league rehab assignment and might be an option again for the Cubs' rotation in a couple of weeks. When healthy this season, Stroman has posted a 3.85 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 111:50 K:BB in 23 starts covering 128.2 innings.
Sep 5 2023Stroman (ribs) threw a successful bullpen session Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was his first time throwing off a mound since he was diagnosed with a right rib cage cartilage fracture in mid-August. Stroman still has a lot of hurdles to clear, but he could potentially be an option again for the Cubs' rotation around late September if all continues to go well. His last major-league start was July 31 against the Reds.
Sep 3 2023Stroman (ribs) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman is at the Cubs spring training facility in Arizona and will return to the mound Monday for the first time since being diagnosed with the rib fracture in mid-August. The right-hander originally landed on the shelf Aug. 2 with hip inflammation before the rib issue was eventually revealed. Stroman was shut down from throwing for a couple weeks before he resumed playing catch Wednesday, so he'll likely require a few bullpen sessions before being cleared to face live batters.
Aug 30 2023Stroman (ribs) played some long toss Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The loss-tossing work marks the first time Stroman has done any throwing since he was diagnosed with a right rib cage cartilage fracture two weeks ago. It's clearly a significant step forward for the right-hander, but he's working within a tight window to return to the Cubs' rotation before the end of the season. Stroman initially went on the 15-day injured list in early August with a hip issue.
Aug 29 2023Stroman (hip/ribs) was cleared for light activity Tuesday following an examination of the fracture in his right rib cage cartilage, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The exam showed a good amount of healing in his rib cage, but there remains no exact timetable for Stroman's return to the Cubs' starting rotation. He originally landed on the injured list Aug. 2 due to right hip inflammation and is probably still at least a couple of weeks away from being able to pitch in live games.
Aug 16 2023Stroman was diagnosed Wednesday with a right rib cage cartilage fracture and is without a timetable to return from the 15-day injured list, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman initially appeared on track to come off the IL when first eligible to start Wednesday's series finale with the White Sox, but that plan was scrapped after he reported renewed discomfort in the rib cage area Tuesday. Follow-up tests have now confirmed the nature of Stroman's setback, and the two-time All-Star now looks as though he could be out through the end of August, if not longer. While Stroman remains on the mend, Drew Smyly could make his return to the rotation when the Cubs require a fifth starter again during next week's series in Detroit.
Aug 15 2023Stroman (hip) is experiencing right rib discomfort and will not be activated from the injured list Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman had been slated to return to the Cubs' rotation Wednesday night against the White Sox, but his absence will stretch on at least a little while longer. The 32-year-old is being evaluated Tuesday by Chicago's medical staff to determine the severity of this rib-related setback. He originally landed on the injured list Aug. 2 due to right hip inflammation.
Aug 12 2023Stroman (hip) threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Friday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was placed on the 15-day IL on Aug. 2 with right hip inflammation. Everything went well during his bullpen session Friday, and the 32-year-old righty remains on track to return when eligible Wednesday.
Aug 7 2023Stroman (hip) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman landed on the injured list last week, and he will not have to wait long to get back on the bump. Manager David Ross is hoping that Stroman will be ready to return from the injured list when first eligible Aug. 16, and a successful session Tuesday would go a long way toward reaching that goal.
Aug 2 2023Cubs manager David Ross said Wednesday that he expects Stroman (hip) will be ready to return from 15-day injured list around when he's first eligible for activation Aug. 16, ESPN.com reports. "He's still only going to miss one start with the off days we have, and he'll be able to work on some stuff with the time he's going to have down, so I thought it was an optimal time [for Stroman to go on the IL]," Ross said. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was placed on the IL on Wednesday due to right hip inflammation, an injury the right-hander said has been affecting his mechanics of late. The hip issue would help explain his stark decline in performance over his last seven outings, as Stroman has turned in just one quality start during that stretch while going 1-4 with a 9.00 ERA and 1.93 WHIP over 30 frames. Stroman's move to the IL opened up a spot on the 26-man active roster for reliever Jose Cuas, whom the Cubs acquired Monday in a trade with the Royals.
Jul 31 2023Stroman (10-8) took the loss against Cincinnati on Monday, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two batters over three innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman got through a scoreless first frame Monday before giving up three runs in each of the second and third innings. He wasn't allowed to go back out for the fourth, ending with his second-shortest start of the campaign. Stroman picked up a win and a quality start in his first outing following the All-Star break, but he's imploded since, allowing 17 earned runs over 10 frames while recording a 10:8 K:BB in his past three appearances. The veteran looked like he could be in the NL Cy Young conversation after posting a 9-4 record with a 2.28 ERA across his first 16 starts of the campaign, but he's well out of earshot for that award now that his ERA has climbed all the way up to 3.85.
Jul 26 2023Stroman allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman didn't pitch well, but Lance Lynn was just about equally poor for the Pale Hose. After an excellent first three months of the campaign, Stroman has struggled over his last six starts, allowing 28 runs (24 earned) over 27 innings with just one quality start in that span. The poor stretch has inflated his ERA from 2.28 to 3.51 and his WHIP from 1.02 to 1.20. He's added a 10-7 record and a 109:48 K:BB over 125.2 innings through 22 starts overall. He's tentatively lined up for a challenging two-start week next week, with potential matchups versus Cincinnati and Atlanta on the slate, assuming the Cubs hold onto Stroman through the trade deadline.
Jul 20 2023Stroman (10-7) took the loss against St. Louis on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been one of the National League's top starters this season, but he didn't have his best stuff against the Cardinals. The right-hander threw just 56 of 99 pitches for a strike and tied a season high with four walks, notching fewer than four innings for the third time on the campaign. Stroman allowed only one run over six innings in his previous outing, but he's been struggling overall since the end of June, posting a 6.46 ERA and 1.65 WHIP with a 22:12 K:BB across 23.2 innings over his past five starts. Stroman's season ERA of 3.09 is still very solid, but it's reasonable to be concerned about his recent downturn.
Jul 16 2023Stroman (10-6) earned the win Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over six innings against the Red Sox. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was cruising through Boston's lineup Saturday before surrendering a leadoff double to Justin Turner in the top of the fourth, which would eventually lead to one run coming across for the Red Sox. The right-hander would then go 1-2-3 over the next two innings to log his major league-leading 15th quality start. Stroman had allowed at least three runs in each of his last three starts coming in and now holds a 5.40 ERA in July after Saturday's performance. His ERA of 2.88 on the season currently ranks fifth in the National League.
Jul 6 2023Stroman said he will not pitch in Tuesday's All-Star Game, electing instead to rest up for the second half, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman made the announcement after his final start before the break Thursday, in which he allowed four runs over five innings and settled for a no-decision against the Brewers. "I'm definitely looking forward to having a little bit of a break," he said. "Kind of just reset my energy, clear my mind and have a good second half." Stroman has been solid so far with a 2.96 ERA across 112.2 innings. However, the righty only logged 138.2 innings last year as he dealt with a shoulder issue, so the extended absence makes sense as he aims to blow past that mark in 2023.
Jul 2 2023Stroman (9-6) took the loss against Cleveland on Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman exited his previous start after 3.1 innings due to a finger blister, but he had recovered enough by Saturday to take his turn in the rotation. The right-hander struck out four of the first six batters he faced and finished with seven punchouts, but the Guardians got to him for three singles in the sixth frame, with all three of those batters coming around to score (two after he departed). Stroman has given up 11 runs (eight earned) over his past nine innings across two starts, increasing his season ERA from 2.28 to 2.76.
Jun 30 2023Stroman (finger) will start Saturday versus the Guardians, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman will be able to make his next start on regular rest after he exited his last outing Sunday versus the Cardinals with a blister on his right index finger. The 32-year-old saw his streak of seven straight quality starts get snapped against St. Louis, as he gave up six runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.1 frames, so he'll look to get back on track against Cleveland. On the season, Stroman has been incredibly effective, posting a 2.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with 85 punchouts over 102 innings in 17 starts, including a complete game shutout.
Jun 28 2023Stroman (finger) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: If the workout goes smoothly, Stroman should be locked in for his next scheduled turn in the Cubs' rotation this weekend versus the Guardians. He had a blister open up on his right index finger Sunday in London against the rival Cardinals.
Jun 27 2023The Cubs expect Stroman (finger) to make his next start this weekend, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After being pulled from his start Sunday due to a blister on his right index finger, Stroman appears to be in line to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Saturday against Cleveland. It hasn't been confirmed just yet, but the Cubs will know for sure whether Stroman is good to go within the next couple of days.
Jun 25 2023Stroman was removed from Sunday's game against the Cardinals with a blister on his right index finger, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander surrendered six runs (three earned) on nine hits over 3.1 frames before being pulled from Sunday's start in London. Stroman exited before the blister ruptured, which could give him a chance to avoid a trip to the injured list and make his next start.
Jun 20 2023Stroman (9-4) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Pirates. He allowed five hits and a walk, while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been exceptional lately, as that's now seven straight quality starts since he allowed six runs in 2.2 innings against Minnesota on May 14. In the seven appearances since then, the righty has a stellar 1.29 ERA and has earned the win each time out. The only thing Stroman hasn't done at an elite level this year is miss bats, as he now has 83 strikeouts across 98.2 innings. However, that hasn't been a big part of his game at the MLB level, and he should be able to maintain his success despite not overpowering hitters. Stroman will look for his eighth straight quality start and win in his next outing, which is tentatively set for June 28 against the Phillies.
Jun 15 2023Stroman (8-4) earned the win Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Pirates. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman extended his win streak and quality start streak to six Thursday, pushing him to a league-leading 13 quality starts. He's been on a tear in that span, sporting a 1.51 ERA and 31:14 K:BB across 41.2 innings, including a complete game shutout against the Rays. He'll look to continue his dominance in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to be a rematch with Pittsburgh at PNC Park.
Jun 9 2023Stroman (7-4) allowed two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five over 6.2 innings to earn the win Friday over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The four walks were a season high, but it was an otherwise strong performance once again for Stroman. He's on a five-start winning streak, allowing just six runs (five earned) over 35.2 innings in that span. He's now at a 2.42 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP and 73:31 K:BB through 85.2 innings over 14 starts this season. While his walk rate remains high, Stroman's been effective at navigating the free passes, which he'll try to continue doing next week versus the Pirates.
Jun 4 2023Stroman (6-4) allowed an unearned run on four hits across six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Padres. He walked three and struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After a rough start against Minnesota on May 14, Stroman has been locked in over his last four outings, allowing just three earned runs across 29 innings. That's allowed the righty to lower his season ERA to a sparkling 2.39. Stroman had an ERA of 3.50 or lower each of the last three years, so while he might not be able to keep up this pace, he should remain a strong fantasy contributor the rest of the way. Stroman is tentatively set to start again Friday against the Giants on the road.
May 29 2023Stroman (5-4) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Monday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight batters over nine shutout innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rays entered Monday having scored the most runs in MLB, but that didn't phase Stroman as he tossed the second complete-game shutout of his nine-year big-league career (the other came during his rookie season with Toronto). The right-hander was a Wander Franco single away from a no-hitter, and he racked up 20 swinging strikes while tying his season high with eight punchouts. This was undoubtedly the high point of Stroman's campaign thus far, but he's been excellent throughout the season, tallying 10 quality starts and posting a 2.59 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and .188 BAA while leading the National League with 73 innings pitched. His strikeout numbers aren't overpowering, but Stroman is among the early Cy Young contenders in the NL with one-third of the campaign in the rearview mirror.
May 24 2023Stroman (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits across eight innings to pick up the win Wednesday against the Mets. He walked two and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman only needed 88 pitches to complete eight innings, as he pitched efficiently and kept New York hitters off balance all night. The righty struggled two starts ago against the Twins, allowing six runs over 2.2 innings, but he's allowed just three total runs over 14 innings in his two subsequent outings. That's allowed Stroman to lower his season ERA to a strong 2.95. He'll look to keep rolling in his next appearance, which is tentatively set for Monday against the Rays.
May 20 2023Stroman (3-4) picked up the win in Friday's 10-1 rout of the Phillies, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran right-hander cruised to his eighth quality start in 10 outings so far this season, but the win was his first since April 7. Stroman will take a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 51:21 K:BB through 56 innings into his next start, which is likely to come at home next week against the Mets.
May 14 2023Stroman (2-4) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings, taking the loss Sunday against the Twins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman gave up a home run and three doubles among those seven hits in his worst start of the season. This was just the second time in nine outings he's given up more than two runs, and it stretched his winless skid to seven starts. The veteran right-handed is at a 3.24 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 47:19 K:BB through 50 innings on the season. His 3.4 BB/9 is the highest mark of his career, and it's something he'll need to get under control to maintain success. Stroman is expected to make his next start on the road versus the Phillies.
May 8 2023Stroman (2-3) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman allowed a run in the second and sixth innings but didn't face much trouble otherwise. He once again didn't receive help from his offense and fell to 0-3 over his last six starts despite allowing two or fewer runs in five of those. Stroman owns a strong 2.28 ERA with a 44:17 K:BB across 47.1 frames. The 32-year-old tied his season low with 89 pitches but also tied his season best with 14 whiffs. Stroman is currently expected to start in Minnesota this weekend.
May 3 2023Stroman allowed just one run on five hits across six innings but did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Nationals. He walked three and struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman continued his strong start to the season, as he now has a 2.18 ERA overall, though he hasn't earned a win since April 7. The righty has a 3.05 ERA across 29.1 innings following that last win, so his performance really hasn't fallen off much, but the run support just hasn't been there. Fantasy managers would like to see more wins moving forward, though it's hard to complain about how Stroman has pitched. He'll look to keep rolling when he takes the hill again early next week.
Apr 28 2023Stroman allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over 6.1 innings during Friday's loss to Miami. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Marlins scored just one run on Stroman through six innings before Jean Segura drove in a run in the seventh. Stroman has given up two or fewer runs in all but one of his six starts to begin the year. He's sporting a strong 2.29 ERA and 33:13 K:BB through 35.1 frames. The 31-year-old is currently lined up to start in Washington next week.
Apr 5 2023Stroman and the Cubs won't play Wednesday against the Reds after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Cincinnati. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams will make up the postponed game as part of a split doubleheader Sept. 1. Assuming Stroman didn't go through too extensive of a warmup before Wednesday's game was ultimately postponed, he shouldn't have to be pushed back in the rotation and will likely start the Cubs' next contest Friday versus the Rangers at Wrigley Field.
Mar 30 2023Stroman (1-0) struck out eight batters and allowed three hits over six scoreless innings while earning the win Thursday against the Brewers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things looked a little dicey early on in the game for Stroman as he struggled with control issues and found himself in a bases-loaded scenario in the third inning. However, he was able to force a double-play to get out of it and cruised for another three innings. Stroman projected to be unspectacular in 2023, but a few more similar outings could put his name into fantasy relevancy.
Mar 3 2023Stroman should be in line to start for the Cubs on Opening Day after pitching in the World Baseball Classic, though Chicago manager David Ross hasn't set his rotation in stone, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) on the shelf, Stroman is the natural candidate to lead Chicago's rotation to begin the season and potentially all year. The righty will pitch for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic before returning to the Cubs. He registered a solid 3.50 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 2022, though he only struck out 119 batters across 138.2 innings. That's in line with his career norms, as Stroman has never been a huge source of strikeouts.
Feb 23 2023Stroman will start for the Cubs in their Cactus League opener Saturday against the Giants, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman will probably also get the nod on Opening Day of the regular season with Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) ticketed for an early IL stint. Stroman signed a three-year, $71 million free-agent contract with Chicago in December 2021 and went on to register a solid 3.50 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 119:36 K:BB over 138.2 innings (25 starts) in the first year of that deal.
Feb 21 2023Stroman figures to begin the season as the Cubs' No. 1 starter with Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) likely opening the year on the injured list, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic report. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman may have been the No. 1 starter even with Hendricks healthy, but the latter's shoulder injury should cement things. The Cubs did add Jameson Taillon in the offseason, but he figures to slot in as the No. 2 starter. Stroman finished 2022 with a 3.50 ERA and 119 strikeouts across 138.2 innings in his first season in Chicago.
Oct 2 2022Stroman (6-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing no runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against the Reds. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman finished the season on a high note with his second scoreless outing since the beginning of September and fourth straight quality start. Additionally, his seven punchouts on the day were tied for his second highest of the season. In 25 starts this season, Stroman maintained a 3.50 ERA with six wins over 138.2 innings.
Sep 27 2022Stroman (5-7) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings in a 2-1 victory over the Phillies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman held the Phillies in check most of the night as the only damage came via an RBI double off the bat of Bryce Harper in the sixth inning. The veteran has thrown seven innings in two of his last three starts and recorded a quality start in all three of those. Over his last 10 starts, Stroman owns a healthy 3.25 ERA but only two wins. He next tentatively lines up to face Cincinnati this weekend.
Sep 21 2022Stroman pitched six innings, surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in Wednesday's win over the Marlins. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman tossed four scoreless frames before giving up a double and two home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, accounting for all the damage against him in the contest. The right-hander pitched well after being moved up to start Wednesday, logging his second consecutive quality start and third in his last four outings overall. Stroman has produced a 2.79 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 29 innings in his last five starts.
Sep 20 2022Stroman is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was set to get five days between starts, but fellow starter Drew Smyly (shoulder) will not start Wednesday as scheduled, so Stroman will go instead on regular rest. Stroman has had a couple rough starts in recent weeks, but he also posted a 2.35 ERA over his last four trips to the mound.
Sep 17 2022Stroman (4-7) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings in a 2-1 victory over the Rockies. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander carried a shutout into the sixth inning, but Ryan McMahon took Stroman deep to account for the only blemish on his line. He got the hook after 85 pitches (57 strikes) in his sixth quality start since the All-Star break, a stretch in which Stroman sports a 2.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 45:17 K:BB through 64 innings.
Sep 10 2022Stroman (3-7) took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over four innings against the Giants. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: All of the damage was done in the second inning, with San Francisco scoring four runs on four hits, a walk and a balk. Three of the four hits Stroman allowed in the frame went for extra bases, including Joey Bart's two-run home run. Stroman has a 3.91 ERA this season but only three wins in 21 starts. As a low-strikeout pitcher, he's susceptible to getting BABIP'd on occasion.
Sep 4 2022Stroman allowed just four hits and struck out five without walking a batter over seven scoreless innings, but he did not factor into the decision in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was excellent in a pitchers' duel with Miles Mikolas, but the Cubs failed to cash in any of their four baserunners. While Stroman is winless over his last seven outings, he's taken just one loss while posting a 3.29 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 41 innings in that span. The strong stretch has trimmed his season ERA to 3.73 with a 1.17 WHIP and 90:29 K:BB through 108.2 innings across 20 starts this year. The right-hander is projected for a home start versus the Giants next weekend.
Aug 30 2022Stroman allowed just one run on three hits across five innings but did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays. He walked two and struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Pitching against the team he played for from 2014 until getting traded to the Mets in 2019, Stroman pitched well but had to settle for the no-decision. The righty lowered his ERA to 3.98, though he only has three wins to show for his efforts this year. Stroman did miss about a month with a shoulder injury, so he won't approach the 179 innings he logged in 2021, but he could be set for a strong finish if he stays healthy and gets some more run support. He's scheduled to start again Sept. 7 against the Reds,
Aug 25 2022Stroman (3-6) allowed five earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out one across five innings to take the loss Thursday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman didn't allow a home run, but he had two disastrous innings to sink his outing. He allowed five of the first six batters he faced to reach base to begin the game. Three frames later, he surrendered four consecutive one-out singles. Stroman has pitched well for long stretches this season, but he's now coughed up at least five earned runs in four of his 18 starts. That has inflated his ERA to 4.10 across 96.2 innings for the season.
Aug 21 2022Stroman did not factor into the decision against the Brewers on Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five and walking four over 7.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman tossed 62 of 96 pitches for strikes Saturday. One of Stroman's two earned runs came in the eighth inning after he was relieved by Rowan Wick, when Willy Adames knocked in Christian Yelich. With the two-run outing, Stroman picked up a quality start, his seventh of the year and his fourth in his last six games. In his last three starts, the righty has lowered his ERA from 4.20 to where it currently sits at 3.83.
Aug 15 2022Stroman allowed four unearned runs on six hits across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in Monday's game against the Nationals. He walked one and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A Zach McKinstry throwing error to start the bottom of the fifth inning didn't help Stroman's cause, but the righty also labored a bit in needing 94 pitches to retire 14 batters. Stroman has now logged three straight no-decisions, allowing 11 runs (seven earned) across 16.1 innings during the stretch. He's been able to lower his ERA to a solid 3.96, though his 3-5 record reflects the Cubs' inability to provide much run support. Stroman will look to be a bit sharper and possibly pick up a win in his next scheduled start Saturday against the Brewers.
Aug 9 2022Stroman allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six in five innings of a 6-5 loss Tuesday against Washington. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman's kryptonite Tuesday was Keibert Ruiz, as the catcher took Stroman deep with a solo shot in the second and a three-run blast in the fourth. The home run ball has been a bit of an issue for the veteran this season as he's allowing 1.4 homers per nine innings after allowing less than one per nine across his first seven seasons. After an excellent July where he gave up only two runs in four starts, the 31-year-old has allowed seven runs, including four homers, in 11.2 innings in August. He'll likely make his next start against the Nationals again, early next week in Washington.
Aug 4 2022Stroman allowed three runs on five hits across 6.2 innings and did not factor into the decision in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Cardinals. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman pitched well outside of the two home runs he allowed, continuing his solid run since returning from the injured list in early July. Over his past five starts, the righty has logged 27 innings while allowing just five earned runs. Stroman had a slow start to the season before missing a month with right shoulder inflammation, but he's now been able to whittle his ERA down to an even 4.00. He'll look to keep it up in his next scheduled start Tuesday against a Nationals squad that is now without sluggers Juan Soto and Josh Bell.
Jul 29 2022Stroman (3-5) allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings to earn the win Friday over the Giants. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was dialed in, throwing 67 of 95 pitches for strikes. The eight hits actually matched his second-highest total allowed this season, but he was able to limit the opposition to one or zero runs for the fourth straight start since returning from a shoulder injury. The right-hander has a 3.99 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 62:18 K:BB through 67.2 innings. His next start is tentatively scheduled to be a road matchup in St. Louis next week.
Jul 24 2022Stroman did not factor into the decision against the Phillies on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking two over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman pitched well despite not factoring into the decision. He threw 55 of 86 pitches for strikes across six frames. In his first two games since returning from the IL, Stroman didn't last beyond 4.1 innings, so seeing him go six innings is a positive sign that his stamina is returning to pre-injury levels. The righty earned a quality start in Saturday's contest and lowered his ERA to 4.38 on the season.
Jul 16 2022Stroman did not factor into the decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing one run on one hit and two walks over 4.1 innings against the Mets. He struck out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He pitched well against one of his former teams, but manager David Ross lifted Stroman at 83 pitches in what was the right-hander's second start back from a shoulder injury. He was limited to just 59 pitches in his return. With this gradual progression, we should expect the reins to come off for the most part shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 15 2022Stroman and the Cubs won't play Friday against the Mets after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Friday's matchup will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday. Stroman will start the first game of the twin bill while Drew Smyly takes the mound in the nightcap, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The right-hander returned from the injured list last Saturday and tossed four scoreless innings against the Dodgers.
Jul 9 2022Stroman (shoulder) threw four scoreless innings Saturday versus the Dodgers. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out three, and he didn't factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman missed a month with right shoulder inflammation. He was limited in this appearance, throwing 59 pitches (37 strikes), though he was effective after his stint on the injured list. It's an encouraging return for the right-hander, who still owns a mediocre 4.91 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 48:13 K:BB through 51.1 innings in 10 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Mets next weekend, though it's likely he'll still be working on a pitch count for that outing as he continues to stretch out to a full workload.
Jul 8 2022Stroman (shoulder) will start Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman spent a month on the injured list due to right shoulder inflammation, but he made a rehab start Sunday at Triple-A Iowa and allowed five runs in 2.2 innings. Since the right-hander is starting Saturday's matchup, Drew Smyly (oblique) will likely start in Sunday's series finale.
Jul 7 2022Stroman (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the injured list and start during the Cubs' weekend series against the Dodgers, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman threw a bullpen session Thursday and apparently felt well after the activity. Drew Smyly (oblique) is also expected to be activated from the injured list this weekend, which likely means that two of Matt Swarmer, Adrian Sampson and Mark Leiter will lose their rotation spot. Stroman has yet to get on track this season, as he has a 5.32 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 47.1 frames.
Jul 6 2022Stroman (shoulder) returned from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in front of the Cubs' coaching and training staffs in the next couple of days before the team determines his next step, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been on the 15-day injured list since early June with right shoulder inflammation and didn't look particularly sharp in his rehab outing with Iowa on Sunday, as he was tagged for five earned runs on seven hits and one walk. With that in mind, it wouldn't be surprising if the Cubs opted to send Stroman out for a second rehab start so that he gets more stretched out and hopefully tightens up his command. Expect more definitive word on Stroman's next steps to come by the weekend.
Jul 2 2022Stroman (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been throwing consistently over the last week, and he reached 40 pitches during a bullpen session last Saturday before throwing 36 pitches in a live batting practice session Tuesday. The right-hander threw another bullpen Friday and has now been cleared to return to game action with the Triple-A club. It's not yet clear how many rehab starts he'll require, but he's closing in on a return.
Jul 1 2022Stroman (shoulder) is throwing another bullpen session Friday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman will toss another bullpen session as he continues ramping up his activity following right shoulder inflammation. He'll likely start a rehab assignment in the next week and could return to the Cubs close to the All Star-break.
Jun 28 2022Stroman (shoulder) threw 36 pitches in Tuesday's live batting practice session, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He progressed to mound work just a little over a week ago, but this was the first time he threw to live hitters. Stroman will likely either throw another live batting practice session or advance to a rehab assignment.
Jun 25 2022Stroman (shoulder) threw approximately 40 pitches during a bullpen session Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman's throwing session Saturday marked the second time he's thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list, and he tested his full pitch repertoire during the bullpen. The Cubs return home next week, and the right-hander should have a chance to join the team to throw live BP.
Jun 22 2022Stroman (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's unclear if Stroman will use all his pitches or throw at full intensity Wednesday, but the activity marks another checkpoint reached in his recovery from right shoulder inflammation. Stroman has been sidelined June 10 with the injury and is likely at least a week away from making his return from the 15-day injured list.
Jun 20 2022Stroman (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session within the next few days, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman's inflamed right shoulder apparently responded well to playing catch last week, so he's poised to get back on the mound in what will mark the next step forward in his throwing progression. Once Stroman is comfortable using all his pitches during bullpen sessions, he'll advance to facing hitters in live batting practice before throwing a simulated game or heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment.
Jun 16 2022Stroman (shoulder) played catch Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman hasn't pitched in nearly two weeks while battling shoulder inflammation. The fact he's now able to throw again is certainly a good sign, but he still has several steps to go before being activated off the injured list.
Jun 15 2022Stroman (shoulder) hasn't yet resumed throwing, Joey Pollizze of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been sidelined for a week due to right shoulder inflammation, and he's been shut down over the last few days while resting his injury. A timetable for the right-hander's return is unlikely to be revealed until he resumes throwing, but it seems possible that he'll require more than the minimum of 15 days on the injured list.
Jun 10 2022Stroman was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right shoulder inflammation, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. The move is retroactive to June 7. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman wasn't listed among Chicago's probable starters for this weekend despite having Wednesday's start rained out, and the shoulder injury explains his absence. The right-hander apparently had the issue crop up while throwing in the bullpen during the rain delay, and he'll now be unavailable for the next two weeks. Wade Miley (shoulder) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move and will slide into Stroman's spot in the rotation.
Jun 8 2022Stroman won't start as scheduled Wednesday at Baltimore since the game was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday's game was postponed following a lengthy rain delay, and it will be made up in mid-August. The Cubs have a scheduled day off Thursday, and it's unclear when Stroman will next take the mound, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago, since Wade Miley (shoulder) and Matt Swarmer are poised to start Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Jun 4 2022Stroman (2-5) allowed nine runs on 10 hits across four innings to take the loss Friday against the Cardinals. He walked one and struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Outside of the seven strikeouts, this was a disaster for Stroman, who saw his ERA rise to 5.32. It's the second time this year the righty has allowed at least seven earned runs in a start and the third time he's allowed at least five, though he has allowed two runs or fewer in his other six appearances, so there have been some positive signs. The Cubs were certainly expecting more consistent results, however, when they signed Stroman to a three-year, $71 million deal in the offseason. He'll look to turn things around in his next scheduled start, a tough matchup against the Yankees on the road next week.
May 29 2022Stroman fanned two in seven scoreless innings while allowing three hits and two walks in a 5-4 loss Sunday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After allowing a leadoff single, Stroman retired the next 13 batters he faced. He was efficient, needing just 90 pitches to get through seven frames, and induced 10 groundouts. It was the fifth straight start in which he's allowed two or fewer earned runs, leading to a 1.80 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 30 innings over that span. The 31-year-old will likely make his next start next weekend against the Cardinals.
May 24 2022Stroman (2-4) allowed two runs on four hits across five innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Reds. He walked two and struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Cubs scored three runs in the first inning and 11 in the game, so Stroman got plenty of run support in an easy win while also recording a new season high in strikeouts. The righty started the season slowly and his ERA is still a bit high at 4.71, but he's been better lately with a 2.35 ERA across his past four starts, and he's gone 2-2 in that stretch. Considering Stroman posted a 3.02 ERA across 33 starts with the Mets in 2021, fantasy managers should expect more of the same moving forward. He'll look to keep it rolling in his next scheduled start Monday as part of a doubleheader against the Brewers.
May 19 2022Stroman (1-4) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out six across five innings to take the loss Thursday against Arizona. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was activated from the COVID-19 injured list prior to his start, and he took the mound for the first time since May 1. He began the outing with a perfect three innings but coughed up three runs in the fourth. After allowing 13 earned runs across his first 13.1 innings of the campaign, Stroman has surrendered only four earned runs across his last 18 frames. Overall, he has a 4.88 ERA with a 28:7 K:BB across 31.1 innings.
May 18 2022Stroman (illness) is listed as the Cubs' probable starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks in Chicago, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman cleared all COVID-19-related protocols Tuesday and rejoined the team, but the Cubs will give him two days to regain conditioning before formally reinstating him from the COVID-19-related injured list Thursday. Because Stroman didn't complete a rehab assignment beforehand and hasn't started since May 1 before landing on the IL, the Cubs could limit his workload more than usual in his return to action.
May 17 2022Stroman cleared COVID-19 protocols Tuesday but has yet to be activated off the injured list, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been on the injured list for over a week and hasn't pitched since May 1. He threw a bullpen session Tuesday, per Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, but it's unclear if his absence is long enough that the Cubs will require a rehab outing before he returns to the roster, but the righty's next steps should be revealed soon.
May 14 2022Stroman (undisclosed) played catch Saturday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been on the COVID-19 injured list since Sunday. His expected return date is unclear, but the fact that he's ready for some activity suggests he may not miss too much more time.
May 8 2022Stroman (undisclosed) was placed on the injured list Sunday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The move doesn't include an injury designation, which likely means Stroman's absence is related to COVID-19. Assuming that's the case, the 31-year-old can be activated as soon as he clears the MLB's testing protocols. He was scheduled to start Sunday against the Dodgers, but Justin Steele will instead take the mound for the Cubs.
May 1 2022Stroman (1-3) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday against the Brewers. He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Brewers came into Sunday's contest on a five-game winning streak and had scored 38 runs in that span, so Stroman's first win with the Cubs was certainly impressive. He also outdueled 2021 Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes, who allowed only two runs across his seven innings. Stroman has gotten off to a slow start with a 5.13 ERA through five starts, though his last two outings have been better, allowing just two earned runs across 13 innings. The righty will look to keep it rolling in his next scheduled start Saturday against the Dodgers.
Apr 26 2022Stroman (0-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits across six innings to take the loss Tuesday against Atlanta. He had no walks and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman pitched a lot better than he had his previous two starts, but the Cubs only mustered one run of support, leaving the righty still searching for his first win with his new team. Because of those rough two outings, when he allowed 12 earned runs across 8.1 innings, Stroman is saddled with a 6.98 ERA for the season. He'll look to keep whittling that down in his next scheduled start Sunday against the Brewers.
Apr 21 2022Stroman (0-2) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits across 4.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rays. He walked two and struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The strikeouts are the only silver lining here, as Stroman struggled for the second straight start. In those outings, the righty has allowed 12 earned runs in just 8.1 innings, which has pushed his season ERA to 8.78. This is of course not what the Cubs expected when they signed Stroman to a three-year, $71 million deal over the winter, but he still has plenty of time to turn things around. The 30-year-old will look to get back on track in his next scheduled start Tuesday against Atlanta.
Apr 16 2022Stroman (0-1) allowed five runs on six hits across four innings to take the loss Friday against the Rockies. He walked one and struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: As is the case with many pitchers, Stroman struggled to find his footing at Coors Field. The righty actually looked good through three innings, but the Rockies tallied five runs on four hits and a walk in the fourth inning. The big blow was a three-run home run by Alan Trejo. The tough outing pushed Stroman's season ERA to 6.00, though better days should be ahead. He lines up to face the Rays on Wednesday in his next scheduled start.
Apr 10 2022Stroman allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out three in five innings during Sunday's loss to the Brewers. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Despite throwing just 42 of his 79 pitches for strikes, Stroman was sharp during his team debut. He was unable to pick up the win since the Cubs' bullpen surrendered the 3-1 lead following his departure, but his debut was certainly encouraging. The right-hander has shown improvement in each of his last two seasons, most recently posting a 3.02 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 179 innings during 33 starts with the Mets last year. Stroman tentatively lines up to make his next start at hitter-friendly Coors Field against the Rockies on Friday.
Apr 2 2022With Kyle Hendricks being named the Opening Day starter, per Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network, Stroman should work as the Cubs' No. 2 starter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is how the two pitchers have operated in spring training, so this alignment for the regular season is not surprising. Even if Hendricks is technically the No. 1 starter, Stroman may end up being the better fantasy asset based on his stronger numbers from a season ago.
Mar 23 2022Stroman gave up two runs on three hits across two innings in Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Athletics. He walked two and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman wasn't as sharp as he was in his first start of the spring Friday, when he logged two perfect innings with three strikeouts. The numbers don't matter much at this point, of course, as the righty is simply trying to gear up for the regular season. He figures to be a strong fantasy asset in his first year with the Cubs.
Mar 19 2022Stroman pitched two perfect innings in Friday's Cactus League game against the Giants. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman wasn't expected to pitch deep into the game in his spring training debut, but he looked very sharp while he was on the mound. The Cubs' big offseason addition should slot in behind Kyle Hendricks in the rotation this year. Stroman was good in 2021 with the Mets, posting a 3.02 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 179 innings, and should be a solid fantasy contributor in 2022.
Mar 15 2022Stroman will make his spring training debut Friday against the Giants, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman joined the Cubs in the offseason and will look to make a strong first impression with his new club. Kyle Hendricks will make his spring debut a day earlier, so perhaps that will be the order heading into the regular season. Either way, Stroman will be expected to be a key contributor in the rotation. After not pitching in the shortened 2020 season, the righty registered a solid 3.02 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 179 innings with the Mets last year.
Dec 1 2021Stroman signed a contract with the Cubs on Wednesday, he confirmed on his personal Twitter account. It's a three-year, $71 million deal that includes an opt out after the second season, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.com. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old righty logged a 3.02 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 50.8 percent groundball rate in 179 innings last season. He didn't pitch in 2020, but he has logged 32 or more starts in four of the last five seasons he has pitched. Stroman has never struck out more than 166 batters in a season, as he thrives on generating weak contact, and he is generally good at logging bulk innings and preventing runs.
Sep 29 2021Stroman improved to 10-13 after tossing five innings and giving up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four Tuesday in the Mets' 5-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader with the Marlins. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Making his MLB-leading 33rd start of the season, Stroman cruised through the first three frames before enduring some turbulence in the top of the fourth. After following up a leadoff walk by allowing a home run to Lewin Diaz, Stroman retired three of the next four batters to limit the damage that inning. The New York bullpen then held down the fort for the final two frames of the seven-inning game, after Stroman departed with a 3-2 lead. Manager Luis Rojas hasn't indicated that Stroman will be shut down following Tuesday's outing, so the right-hander could make one last start in the Mets' season finale Sunday in Atlanta.
Sep 21 2021Stroman (9-13) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three across five innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Red Sox. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman held Boston scoreless through three innings, however he allowed consecutive doubles which resulted in one run in the fourth frame. One inning later, he surrendered two homers in the span of three batters to ruin his outing. Stroman hadn't allowed a home run in his last five starts entering Tuesday, and he had maintained a 3.07 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 29.1 innings in that span.
Sep 14 2021Stroman pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old was able to limit the damage to two runs in the fourth inning of this one. It was his fifth quality start in his last six outings and he has compiled a 3.22 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 36.1 innings in that span. He lines up to face the Red Sox next week.
Sep 5 2021Stroman didn't factor into the decision during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Nationals, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks over five innings in an 11-9 extra-innings win. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander exited after 94 pitches (54 strikes) in line for the win with the Mets ahead 9-3, but the bullpen coughed up six runs in the next two innings. Stroman issued more than two free passes for the first time since June 27 and saw his quality start streak snapped at three in the mediocre effort. He'll take a 2.93 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 136:39 K:BB through 156.2 innings into his next outing.
Aug 28 2021Stroman allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts through six innings, taking a no-decision in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman loaded the bases in the first and allowed two runs to score in the second but settled in to allow just two singles in the remaining four innings of his outing. The effort was enough to extend his quality start streak to three straight appearances. Hopefully this bodes well for his next start, which is tentatively slated to be against these same Nationals on Friday.
Aug 22 2021Stroman (9-12) picked up the win in Sunday's 7-2 victory over the Dodgers, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: New York scored three in the first of Los Angeles' starter David Price and that would prove to be all the support Stroman needed on the day. The 30-year-old retired 15 of 17 batters faced outside of the fourth inning, the frame during which Stroman permitted both runs and four total baserunners. He's now recorded a decision in nine straight starts, a stretch that's seen Stroman go 3-6.
Aug 18 2021Stroman (8-12) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Giants after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks across seven innings while fanning nine. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman might have been tagged with his 12th loss of the campaign, but he delivered a strong performance on the mound en route to posting a season-high nine strikeouts. Stroman has now given up three runs or fewer in all but one of his last 17 starts and owns a 2.90 ERA during that impressive stretch, a span in which he's also posted eight quality starts. The right-hander also owns a 3.91 ERA through four starts this month.
Aug 12 2021Stroman (8-11) earned the win during Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Nationals. He gave up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman cruised through five shutout frames and allowed only two baserunners, but he was pulled with one out in the sixth after surrendering a run on two hits and a walk. It's the fourth straight start the right-hander has been unable to get through six innings, and he has a 3.85 ERA and 21:5 K:BB across 21 frames in that stretch. The victory also snaps a three-start losing streak.
Aug 11 2021Stroman won't start Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Nationals since the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The two teams completed the suspended game from Tuesday earlier in the evening, but Wednesday's regularly-scheduled contest was forced to be pushed back. The game will be made up via a doubleheader Thursday, and Stroman will start the matinee, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
Aug 10 2021Stroman will start Wednesday against the Nationals rather than Thursday as previously scheduled, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Rich Hill was previously slated to toe the rubber Wednesday, but he will now swap starting spots with Stroman in order to keep the latter on a normal four days of rest. Stroman last pitched Friday, allowing two runs on five hits in a loss to the Phillies.
Aug 7 2021Stroman (7-11) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Phillies after allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while fanning five across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman had a decent outing but it wasn't enough to outduel Kyle Gibson, and as a result, he's now dropped three starts in a row. In fact, the former Blue Jays hurler has gone 1-4 over his last five appearances despite allowing two or fewer runs in four of those games. He owns a 3.14 ERA during that stretch.
Aug 1 2021Stroman (7-10) gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four in 5.2 innings, taking the loss versus Cincinnati on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got through three innings without trouble, but he surrendered a solo home run to Max Schrock in the fourth. Stroman then got into a jam in the sixth, leading to a deficit too tall for the Mets to cover. The 30-year-old has taken six losses in his last nine starts. He's still pitched reasonably well, allowing 22 runs (18 earned) in 44.2 innings in that span. For the year, he owns a 2.80 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 101:28 K:BB through 122.1 innings. Stroman lines up for a road start in Philadelphia next weekend.
Jul 26 2021Stroman (7-9) took the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader against Atlanta. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman dealt with plenty of traffic on the bases in this one, but he kept his team in the contest despite eight hits allowed. He surrendered one run in the top of the third on an RBI double to right field, and the other in the fourth on a fielder's choice. Despite being saddled with his ninth loss, the right-hander owns a 2.63 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with a 97:27 K:BB across 116.1 frames in 2021.
Jul 21 2021Stroman (7-8) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing just one hit and one walk over eight scoreless innings in a 7-0 victory over the Reds. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A third-inning single was the only thing standing between Stroman and a run at a no-hitter, as he exited the game after only 90 pitches (60 strikes). The right-hander collected his first win since June 12 with his best outing of the season, and he'll take a 2.59 ERA and 93:26 K:BB through 111.2 innings into his next start.
Jul 16 2021Stroman (6-8) took the loss versus Pittsburgh on Friday. He allowed two runs on eight hits and hit a batter while striking out three in five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander avoided issuing a walk for the second straight start, but the eight hits he allowed matched a season high. Stroman hasn't pitched more than five innings in any of his last five starts dating back to a hip injury June 22. He's given up 14 runs (10 earned) in 19 innings in that span. Overall, the 30-year-old has a 2.78 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 86:25 K:BB through 103.2 innings this year. He lines up to start in Cincinnati next week.
Jul 4 2021Stroman allowed five runs (three earned) over five innings in a win over the Yankees in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader. He gave up six hits and a walk and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Most of the damage against Stroman came in a three-run second inning, including a two-run double by Kyle Higashioka. The 30-year-old righty failed to record a strikeout and now owns a 78:25 K:BB through 93.2 frames. It was just the second time over his last nine starts that he allowed three or more earned runs. Stroman will carry a 2.60 ERA into next week's projected home start against the Pirates.
Jul 2 2021Stroman (personal) was reinstated from the bereavement list Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 30-year-old has been away from the team for the past few days following the death of his grandmother, but he's returned to the active roster ahead of his scheduled start Saturday. Stroman made six starts in June and posted a 2.40 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 32:11 K:BB across 30 innings.
Jun 28 2021Stroman was placed on the bereavement list Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman will be away from the team in the coming days following his grandmother's death. The right-hander is expected to start Saturday's game against the Yankees, but his move to the bereavement list will make room on the active roster for right-hander Sean Reid-Foley, who was recalled in a corresponding move.
Jun 27 2021Stroman (6-6) allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in three innings, taking the loss versus Philadelphia on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman left his previous start with hip soreness, and he wasn't able to pitch very deep into Sunday's contest. After the game, Mets managers Luis Rojas revealed that Stroman will be away from the team to due to his grandmother's death, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. While he hasn't officially been placed on the bereavement list, such a move could come in the next couple of days. Stroman is still expected to make his next scheduled start versus the Yankees, which tentatively lines up for Friday. The right-hander has a 2.44 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 78:24 K:BB across 88.2 innings.
Jun 26 2021Stroman (hip) could start Sunday's game against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been dealing with left hip soreness since Tuesday, but he had an MRI that came back clean Wednesday and could start on normal rest Sunday. The right-hander will throw Saturday before the team determines his status for Sunday's series finale. If Stroman doesn't start, Jerad Eickhoff would likely take the mound.
Jun 25 2021Stroman (hip) remains on track to make his next start, though the Mets will evaluate him Friday to make sure he'll be able to do so, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman left his previous start against Atlanta with left hip soreness, but his MRI came back clean. Both he and the Mets have expressed optimism about his ability to avoid missing any time, though that's still not quite officially confirmed.
Jun 23 2021The Mets have no immediate plans to place Stroman (hip) on the injured list, and the right-hander is optimistic he'll be able to make his next start, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Luis Rojas said the Mets will still evaluate Stroman day by day, even though the 30-year-old received good news earlier Wednesday, when the MRI on his sore left hip returned clean. At the very least, the Mets plan to give five days of rest between starts, as the team is tentatively planning to have Jerad Eickhoff take the hill Sunday against the Phillies, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Stroman is presumably hoping to take the hill June 28 in Washington, but if he can't gain clearance to start that game, a trip to the IL would grow more likely.
Jun 22 2021Stroman was removed from Tuesday's start against Atlanta with left hip soreness, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander showed some discomfort during the top of the second inning and exited the contest after being visited by the athletic trainer and manager Luis Rojas. Stroman fired a scoreless frame with a walk before being lifted, and it's unclear if the injury will force him to miss his next turn through the rotation.
Jun 17 2021Stroman (6-5) was charged with the loss against the Cubs on Thursday despite allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Aside from serving up a two-run homer to Javier Baez in the first inning, Stroman turned in a brilliant performance against the Cubs, including a season-high tying eight punchouts. Unfortunately, he was strapped with a tough loss after receiving zero run support. The right-hander, who has been the most consistent pitcher for the Mets thus far, has now tossed between six and seven innings in his last eight starts, allowing three or fewer runs in seven of them. Stroman lines up to take the mound at home Tuesday against Atlanta.
Jun 12 2021Stroman (6-4) picked up the win in Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Padres, allowing one run on six hits and a walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander held the Padres off the board until serving up a solo shot to Fernando Tatis in the seventh inning. Stroman has won three straight decisions, with his last loss coming May 16, and he's reeled off five straight quality starts, giving him nine in 14 trips to the mound this year. He'll take a 2.33 ERA and 67:18 K:BB through 77.2 innings into his next outing.
Jun 6 2021Stroman (5-4) won Sunday's 6-2 victory over San Diego, allowing one unearned run on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in 6.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was able to limit a potent Padres' offense to a single unearned run, only encountering trouble in the fifth inning when he was able to escape a bases-loaded-one-out jam by inducing a double play. In 12 starts this year, Stroman has surrendered three runs or less in 10 of them and lowered his ERA to 2.41 Sunday.
Jun 2 2021Stroman didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Diamondbacks after allowing three runs on seven hits while fanning six across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While Stroman didn't factor into the decision in this tight contest, at least he picked up his third straight quality start -- a feat he's accomplished in seven of his 11 outings during the current campaign. The right-hander owns a 2.50 ERA during that three-game stretch and will try to keep this strong run alive in his next start, scheduled for this weekend on the road against the Padres.
May 27 2021Stroman (4-4) picked up the win during the first end of Thursday's doubleheader after blanking the Rockies across six innings. He allowed three hits and a pair of walks while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman turned in one of his best performances of the season, blanking his opponent for just the second time. The right-hander cruised through six innings in 90 pitches and received just enough run support to finish things off. The win was the first of the month for Stroman, who has gone 1-3 in May. The 30-year-old has compiled a 2.47 ERA and 1.05 WHIP on the year and is projected to take the mound again Tuesday at Arizona.
May 26 2021Stroman won't start as scheduled Wednesday against the Rockies was postponed due to inclement weather. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Thursday, so Stroman figures to take the mound during one of those contests.
May 22 2021Stroman didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-5 extra-innings win over the Marlins, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: While he wasn't rewarded with a win in the 12-inning affair, Stroman came through with a strong performance at a crucial time for the injury-ravaged Mets. It was his fifth quality start of the season, and the right-hander will take a 2.73 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 43:11 K:BB through 52.2 innings into his next outing.
May 16 2021Stroman (3-4) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Rays after giving up five runs on six this and a walk while fanning one across six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman won his first three starts of the campaign but has tailed off since then, going 0-4 over his last five outings and giving up four or more runs twice in that span. His ERA has ballooned from 2.01 to 2.72 following Sunday's outing, and while that figure remains an above-average ERA, it's concerning that he's trending in the wrong direction following a blistering start to the campaign. Stroman's next start is scheduled for next week -- it will be on the road against the Rays.
May 11 2021Stroman settled for a no-decision during Tuesday's win over the Orioles, allowing one run on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five across 6.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman turned in a strong performance, entering into a pitcher's duel with John Means while blanking the Orioles over the first six frames. The right-hander soon found himself in trouble in the seventh inning after loading the bases. He was then pulled from the game, and unfortunately the bullpen allowed one of his baserunners to score, charging him with the run. The 30-year-old has now collected 19 strikeouts over the last 16.1 innings while compiling a 2.01 ERA and 1.02 WHIP on the season. He's slated to take the mound again Sunday at Tampa Bay.
May 5 2021Stroman (3-3) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out six across five innings, taking the loss Wednesday against the Cardinals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman surrendered a home run to Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning and to Paul DeJong in the fifth inning. It was the second-most hits Stroman allowed in a start this season, but he continues to do a good job striking out batters while limiting walks. The 30-year-old has a 2.12 ERA with 29 strikeouts and seven walks in 34 innings through six starts.
May 4 2021Stroman (hamstring) will make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Cardinals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman left his start Friday against the Phillies with a tight hamstring but did not appear set for an extended absence. He even volunteered to throw on short rest Tuesday after Jacob deGrom was scratched with side tightness, so it looks as though there's little reason to worry about his healthy moving forward.
May 1 2021Stroman feels better Saturday after exiting his start against the Phillies with a tight hamstring the night before and remains optimistic that he'll make his next start, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman lasted five innings Friday before exiting with the injury. He was evaluated by the Mets' medical staff Saturday, but it's not yet clear if they share his optimism about his timeline.
Apr 30 2021Stroman exited Friday's game against the Phillies due to a tight hamstring, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was replaced by Aaron Loup to begin the bottom of the sixth inning Friday, and he was apparently dealing with a hamstring issue. The right-hander allowed two runs (zero earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out eight in five innings before leaving the game. Stroman tentatively lines up to start on the road against St. Louis on Wednesday, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be able to take the mound.
Apr 24 2021Stroman (3-1) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 7-1 to the Nationals, coughing up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Things weren't going the Mets' way right from the jump, as a Michael Conforto two-base error put Nats leadoff hitter Josh Harrison on third base after a single on Stroman's second pitch of the game. The right-hander never seemed to regain his focus, allowing runs in all four frames before he made his exit, and he finished the day having thrown 43 of 72 pitches for strikes. Stroman will take a 2.25 ERA and 15:5 K:BB through 24.1 innings into his next start Friday in Philadelphia.
Apr 18 2021Stroman (3-0) yielded one run on three hits and a walk over eight innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over Colorado. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was dominant at Coors Field on Sunday, starting his outing with six shutout innings. No Rockies runner made it past first base until the seventh inning when Trevor Story doubled and later scored. Stroman is now a perfect 3-0 with a stellar 0.90 ERA and 11:3 K:BB through 20 innings. He'll look to stay perfect Saturday at home against the Nationals.
Apr 13 2021Stroman (2-0) picked up the win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Phillies, scattering four hits over six scoreless innings while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander was in control from the jump, retiring the first nine batters he faced and not allowing a runner past second base before exiting after 86 pitches (61 strikes). Stroman has now begun the season with back-to-back quality starts, racking up a 0.75 ERA and 6:2 K:BB over 12 innings, but he faces a tough test in his next scheduled outing Sunday at Coors Field.
Apr 12 2021Stroman will start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman only threw nine pitches in Sunday's start against the Marlins before the game was suspended due to inclement weather, but he was initially expected to wait until Friday to make his next start. However, the right-hander felt good while playing catch Monday and will take the mound for Tuesday's nightcap while Taijuan Walker starts Game 1. David Peterson was scheduled to start Monday's game but will now be pushed back to Wednesday.
Apr 11 2021Stroman allowed one hit and recorded one out before Sunday's game against the Marlins was suspended due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It's a game that probably never should have started, as the teams were called off the field due to rain after only nine pitches. Stroman's next turn through the rotation tentatively lines up for Friday, but his next outing could be pushed up given the brevity of Sunday's start.
Apr 6 2021Stroman (1-0) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over six innings in an 8-4 victory over the Phillies. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander got taken deep by Didi Gregorius in the fourth inning but otherwise was in control, tossing 53 of 85 pitches for strikes en route to his first quality start of the year. Stroman will look to keep rolling in his next outing, set for Sunday at home against the Marlins.
Mar 29 2021Stroman posted a 3.44 ERA and 17:2 K:BB through 18.1 innings this spring and is set to open the season as the Mets' No. 2 starter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander created some buzz this spring by adding a split-finger changeup to his arsenal and showing increased velocity with his fastball, but in the end Stroman didn't show a significant spike in his strikeout rate during Grapefruit League play. Still, with Francisco Lindor helping to improve the Mets' infield defense behind him, Stroman and his plus groundball rate could see better results in 2021 even without more whiffs.
Mar 8 2021Stroman threw 52 pitches Sunday in his second spring start and was touching 93 mph with his fastball, Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News reports. "My velocity - I have never seen 93-94 this early in spring training, ever," he said after the game. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander credits a workout and stretching routine with Mets trainers for his early March velocity, but it remains to be seen whether that translates into another gear during the regular season. Stroman posted a 3.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 2019 before opting out last year, and he'll look to solidify the middle of the Mets' rotation this season.
Mar 3 2021Stroman struck out two over two perfect innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League start against the Astros, Deesha Thosar of The New York Daily News reports. He threw 30 pitches while mixing in a new split-finger changeup. "You never know until you throw it against hitters," Stroman said on finally using his new pitch. "It can feel filthy, it can feel nasty, it can feel like the best pitch ever. But until you actually get out there and throw it in a game and see how hitters react to it, I feel like you can't actually consider that pitch a weapon until you do so." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander opted out of last season before accepting the Mets' $18.9 million qualifying offer for 2021, but Stroman apparently spent his time off wisely by adding to his arsenal. The new split-change generated a swing and miss from Michael Brantley on Tuesday, and if it becomes a put-away pitch for the 29-year-old, it could mean big things for him as he heads into free agency. Stroman has a solid 3.76 ERA and 1.29 WHIP for his career, but a lackluster 19.6 percent strikeout rate could create a soft market for his services.
Nov 11 2020Stroman accepted his one-year, $18.9 million qualifying offer from the Mets on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was expected to hit the open market during the offseason, but he'll instead remain with the Mets on a one-year deal. The 29-year-old suffered a muscle cramp in his left calf during summer camp before opting out of the remainder of the 2020 season. Over 59.2 innings with the Mets in 2019, Stroman posted a 3.77 ERA and 60:23 K:BB, and he'll reclaim a prominent role in the starting rotation in 2021.
Nov 1 2020The Mets extended Stroman a one-year, $18.9 million qualifying offer Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Though Stroman will have the option of accepting the qualifying offer, the right-hander is expected to hit the open market in pursuit of a longer-term contract. Stroman missed the entire 2020 season after suffering a muscle tear in his left calf during summer camp before opting out of the remainder of the campaign in early August. The 29-year-old owns a 3.76 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 7.4 K/9 over 849.1 career big-league innings.
Oct 31 2020Stroman is expected to receive a qualifying offer from the Mets ahead of Sunday's deadline, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This season's qualifying offer is a one-year deal worth $18.9 million. With the uncertainty surrounding the presumably depressed market this offseason, there's a chance Stroman accepts the offer, though he's reportedly expected to decline in search of long-term stability, granting the Mets draft-pick compensation. Stroman's stock on the open market is somewhat difficult to predict, as he posted and ERA of 3.22 or better in two of his last three seasons but had a 5.54 ERA in the other year and skipped 2020 entirely after electing to opt out.
Aug 10 2020Stroman (calf) elected to opt out of the season Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman had been working his way back from a strained calf, but he evidently changed his plans and won't be returning until next season. He called his opt out a "collective family decision," per Tim Healey of Newsday, related purely to the COVID-19 pandemic. His calf is reportedly fully healthy, but he'll still enter free agency having spent an entire year without pitching in a game, which could certainly suppress his value on the open market. The Mets will place Stroman on the restricted list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
Aug 8 2020Stroman (calf) will throw another simulated game next week before being activated from the injured list, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been dealing with a torn left calf since shortly before the start of the season. While he's moving better now, he Mets want to give him a bit more time to heal before he returns to the rotation. He threw five innings and more than 80 pitches in his previous simulated game Thursday, so he should be able to handle a full starter's workload in his season debut.
Aug 5 2020Stroman (calf) will throw a simulated game Thursday at the Mets' alternate training site, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman threw a 43-pitch bullpen session Tuesday which apparently went well since he'll throw again Thursday. While the sim game means that he'll miss at least one more turn through the rotation before returning to the active roster, the throwing session could serve as a final tuneup for the right-hander if all goes well. Since Stroman has been on a rigorous throwing schedule, he'll presumably be near his full pitch count once he makes his season debut.
Jul 31 2020Stroman (calf) threw a four-inning live batting practice session Friday that went quite well, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman also went through fielding drills to test his mobility as he works his way back from a torn left calf. His return timeline remains unclear, but it doesn't sound as though he'll miss too many more turns in the rotation.
Jul 29 2020Manager Luis Rojas said Stroman (calf) is throwing bullpen sessions "full tilt," Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This is encouraging news for Stroman, who is working his way back from a muscle tear in his left calf. That said, he's still apparently unable to sprint, so he'll need to clear that hurdle -- and submit a clean MRI, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com -- before he's able to rejoin the rotation. In the meantime, look for David Peterson to remain in the rotation in place of Stroman.
Jul 23 2020Stroman suggested Thursday in a post on his personal Twitter account that the calf injury that landed him on the 10-day injured list is a "super minor setback." ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Manager Luis Rojas labeled Stroman as week-to-week Tuesday after the right-hander was revealed to have a muscle tear in his left calf, but the injury apparently hasn't prevented Stroman from working out. In his post, Stroman said he "felt great" while throwing a 55-pitch bullpen session Monday, noting that he only feels pain in his calf when he jogs and sprints. With that in mind, Stroman's progression through a running program will likely be the top determining factor in when he eventually returns from the IL. He'll likely miss at least two turns through the rotation, with Corey Oswalt looking like the top candidate to replace him at the beginning of the season.
Jul 22 2020Stroman was placed on the injured list Wednesday with a muscle tear in his left calf, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This news comes after Stroman reported feeling tightness in his calf earlier in the week. According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, manager Luis Rojas said it's a "week-to-week" issue, and the right-hander isn't expected to require surgery. David Peterson is a candidate to take Stroman's place in the rotation for the time being.
Jul 5 2020Stroman (undisclosed) was on the field for the Mets' full-squad workout Sunday, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman wasn't spotted Friday when the Mets opened their summer camp, but his presence Sunday suggests his earlier absence wasn't anything too concerning. With Noah Syndergaard (elbow) having undergone season-ending Tommy John surgery during MLB's hiatus, the Mets will be forced to rely more heavily on Stroman to anchor to top half of the rotation alongside ace Jacob deGrom.
Jul 3 2020Stroman wasn't participating in the Mets' workouts Friday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The team didn't provide any specifics as to why Stroman and teammate Amed Rosario didn't work out with the team Friday, and it's unclear whether they were at the facility. It's unclear when Stroman is expected to take the field.
Feb 23 2020Stroman gave up one run on three hits in 1.1 innings during a split-squad game against the Cardinals on Saturday, Mike Puma of The New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander had an uneventful start to his spring training schedule. Stroman is locked into the No. 3 role in the Mets' rotation this season after posting a 3.77 ERA and 60:23 K:BB in 59.2 innings following last year's trade from the Blue Jays.
Jan 10 2020Stroman agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract with the Mets on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman finished with a 3.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with a 159:58 K:BB over 184.1 frames in 2019 across stops with Toronto and New York. He'll slot in the near the middle of the Mets' rotation after avoiding an arbitration hearing.
Sep 27 2019Stroman (10-13) picked up the win after surrendering two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings Friday against the Braves. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman gave up two runs in the first inning, but he managed to settle down and close out his appearance with five scoreless frames on the way to a 4-2 victory. The 28-year-old will finish out the season with a 3.22 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with a 159:58 K:BB over 184.1 innings.
Sep 22 2019Stroman only pitched 4.2 innings Sunday and was supposedly dealing with nausea during his outing which could've explained his abbreviated start, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was already at 86 pitches through just 4.2 innings pitched so he was bound to come out soon regardless of how he felt. The right-hander was dealing with some nausea and was unable to finish out the fifth inning against the Reds. The Mets' bullpen handled the work after Stroman very smoothly, allowing just three hits and one run through the remainder of the game. The 28-year-old is expected to make his final start of the season Friday at home versus the Braves.
Sep 20 2019Stroman's next start will be moved up to Sunday against Cincinnati, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman was initially slated to start Monday, but he'll switch spots with Steven Matz and will now toe the rubber Sunday instead against the Reds. Matz is slated to start Monday in the series opener with Miami as a result.
Sep 17 2019Stroman (9-13) got the win against the Rockies on Tuesday, scattering four hits across seven scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking one in the Mets' 6-1 victory. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Stroman has been lights-out over his past two starts, with this outing leaving him with just one earned run over his last 13.1 innings. His 9-13 record is lackluster, but that isn't Stroman's fault, with the 28-year-old sporting excellent numbers on the season to the tune of a 3.21 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 149:54 K:BB across 173.2 innings between the Blue Jays and Mets.
Sep 12 2019Stroman (8-13) allowed one run on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts across 6.1 innings while earning a victory against the Diamondbacks on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Four walks is obviously not ideal, but Stroman did bounce back in terms of giving up hard contact Thursday. In his last two starts, he had allowed 17 hits, including two homers, in 10 innings. This victory also gave Stroman his first win since Aug. 15. He is 8-13 with a 3.35 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 142 strikeouts in 166.2 innings with the Blue Jays and Mets this season. Stroman is scheduled to pitch next at the Rockies on Tuesday.
Sep 8 2019Stroman (7-13) took the loss Saturday as the Mets fell 5-0 to the Phillies, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits over four innings while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Only two of the hits -- a leadoff homer by Cesar Hernandez, and a fourth-inning double by Corey Dickerson -- went for extra bases while three of them never left the infield, but with the Mets' offense falling silent, Stroman had no margin for error. The right-hander now has a 1-2 record with a 5.05 ERA and 37:14 K:BB through 35.2 innings since the trade that brought him over from Toronto, and he'll look for a better result in his next start Thursday, at home against Arizona.
Sep 1 2019Stroman did not factor into the decision against Philadelphia on Sunday, completing six innings and giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out
Aug 27 2019Stroman (7-12) allowed four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven across six innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Cubs.
Aug 22 2019Stroman (hamstring) said Thursday that he will make his next scheduled start Tuesday against the Cubs, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
Aug 21 2019Stroman (hamstring) underwent an MRI after leaving Wednesday's game, and manager Mickey Callaway said the team is "not concerned" by the injury, Justin Toscano of
Aug 15 2019Stroman (7-11) picked up the win against the Braves on Thursday, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits over five innings, striking out five and walking

Aug 3 2019Stroman allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts across 4.1 innings during a no-decision against the Pirates on Saturday.
Jul 31 2019Stroman will start Saturday against the Pirates, Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports reports.
Jul 28 2019Stroman was traded from the Blue Jays to the Mets on Sunday, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.

Jul 21 2018Stroman improved to 3-7 on the year after tossing seven innings Saturday against the Orioles, allowing just a single run on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven batters. There aren't many easier assignments than Baltimore these days, but Stroman got the job done without any real hassle. After allowing three straight singles to start the game, he settled into a groove and threw six straight scoreless innings. It was an encouraging outing for the 27-year-old, who has allowed five earned runs with a 16:4 K:BB over his last three starts after an injury-plagued start to the season. He'll look to build on his momentum Friday against the White Sox.
Jul 15 2018Stroman (2-7) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings as he took the loss Sunday against the Red Sox.Boston got to Stroman in the first inning for two runs, and they added two more in the fifth before the 27-year-old was lifted. Stroman has been inconsistent over his last four starts, collecting a 2-2 record with 11 earned runs and 15 strikeouts over 23.2 innings. He'll look to turn around a subpar first half as he'll head into the All-Star break with a 5.86 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with 52 strikeouts over 66 innings.
Jul 11 2018Stroman (2-6) tossed seven innings of one-run ball to get the win Tuesday against the Braves, allowing six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.Stroman was outstanding in a difficult matchup, throwing first-pitch strikes to 22 of 28 batters while inducing a whopping 15 groundball outs. The hosts manufactured a run with a bunt and an RBI single in the sixth, but Stroman lasted through the seventh and left with a win in hand. While his 5.90 ERA leaves a lot to be desired, the right-hander has begun to turn things around of late by allowing one earned run or fewer in three of his last four starts. He'll look to keep it up this weekend against the Red Sox.
Jul 4 2018Stroman (1-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two over 4.2 innings against the Mets.Stroman got through the first four innings without much trouble, but then yielded a homer, a double, three singles and a walk while recording just two outs in the fifth and was charged with five runs in the frame. It was a disappointing return to early season form for the 27-year-old, as he had allowed just one earned run while posting 9:1 K:BB over 12 innings since returning from the disabled list in late June prior to Wednesday's start. He'll take a 6.50 ERA and 1.57 WHIP into next Wednesday's road tilt against the Braves.
Jun 30 2018Stroman (1-5) picked up the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out four in a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. It's his second quality start of the year, and second straight solid performance since coming off the disabled list. Stroman threw 65 of 90 pitches for strikes in finally collecting his first win of the season, but he's still saddled with a 6.20 ERA heading into his next start Wednesday at home against the Mets.
Jun 23 2018Stroman (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list Saturday and will start against the Angels, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman hasn't pitched since May 8 after hitting the disabled list with shoulder fatigue. Prior to the injury, he had recorded a very poor 7.71 ERA in seven starts, though he may have been dealing with the issue all season, as he also battled shoulder inflammation in spring training. If he's finally fully healthy, the Blue Jays will hope he returns to the form which saw him post a 3.09 ERA in 2017.
Jun 23 2018Stroman allowed six hits and one walk while striking out five over five scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Saturday.Making his return from a bout of shoulder fatigue, Stroman threw 81 pitches (51 strikes). He did not allow an extra-base hit. It was an encouraging performance after Stroman struggled to a 7.71 ERA in his first seven outings before landing on the disabled list May 11. He will look to build on this momentum next weekend at home against the Tigers.
Jun 20 2018Manager John Gibbons confirmed Stroman (shoulder) will be activated from the disabled list to start Saturday against the Angels, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. As expected, Stroman has been cleared to rejoin the big-league rotation after getting through a simulated game -- due to his scheduled rehab start being rained out -- with no issues earlier in the week. The right-hander will look to turn things around now that he's healthy, as he struggled to a 7.71 ERA and 1.71 WHIP across seven starts (37.1 innings) prior to landing on the shelf with a shoulder injury in mid-May. His return will likely push Sam Gaviglio from the starting rotation.
Jun 19 2018Stroman (shoulder) threw a simulated game at Double-A New Hampshire on Monday and is expected to return from the 10-day disabled list to start Saturday against the Angels, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman had been scheduled to make his second minor-league rehab start Monday with New Hampshire, but a postponement due to rain forced him to alter his plans. While the Blue Jays probably would have liked to see Stroman pitch again in an uncontrolled setting, it appears they were satisfied with how he looked during the simulated game and are ready to integrate him back into the rotation. The return of Stroman, who submitted a 7.71 ERA and 1.71 WHIP across 37.1 innings in his seven starts prior to landing on the DL, will most likely result in Sam Gaviglio losing a rotation spot.
Jun 18 2018Stroman (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start at Double-A New Hampshire on Monday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman covered 4.1 innings on 60 pitches in his first rehab start last week at High-A Dunedin, so he'll presumably work deeper into Monday's appearance in what could be his final outing on the farm before returning from the 10-day disabled list. If Stroman checks out fine physically Monday, he would likely slot back into the Toronto rotation Saturday against the Angels. Sam Gaviglio appears to be most at risk of losing his rotation spot once Stroman is formally reinstated.
Jun 15 2018Stroman (shoulder) threw 4.1 innings in a rehab start Wednesday for High-A Dunedin, giving up two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out three. After completing a three-inning simulated game last weekend without issue, Stroman raised his pitch count to 60 while pitching in an uncontrolled setting for the first time since May 8. The Blue Jays have yet to announce the next step for Stroman, but it's possible that he could be activated from the 10-day disabled list early next week to rejoin the rotation for the team's two-game set against Atlanta. Stroman likely would have a restricted pitch count if he were to start Tuesday or Wednesday, however, which could make the Blue Jays more inclined to have him take the hill once more in the minors before returning from the DL. Expect the Blue Jays to clarify their plans for Stroman at some point over the weekend.
Jun 11 2018Stroman's (shoulder) Wednesday rehab start will come with High-A Dunedin, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports. The Blue Jays had previously announced the rehab appearance but not the location. Stroman has now been out for a month with shoulder fatigue and posted an ugly 7.71 ERA before hitting the disabled list. With the Blue Jays already 11 games out of a playoff spot, the team will likely prioritize Stroman's long-term health over getting him back in the rotation as soon as possible. He's set to throw four innings Wednesday, which means he'll presumably need at least one more rehab appearance after that before returning from the DL.
Jun 11 2018Stroman (shoulder) is scheduled for another rehab outing Wednesday, but the Blue Jays have yet to decide whether he'll toe the rubber for a minor-league affiliate or pitch in a simulated game at extended spring training, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Stroman resumed mound work in late May before advancing to facing hitters in a three-inning simulated game Friday. With Stroman experiencing no renewed soreness in his right shoulder coming out of that outing, it's expected that he'll bump up his pitch count when he returns to the mound Wednesday. Given that Stroman has been on the disabled list for a month with the injury, it seems likely that he'll require at least one more rehab start beyond Wednesday before the Blue Jays will seriously entertain activating him.
Jun 7 2018Stroman (shoulder) will pitch three innings during a simulated game at extended spring training Friday, Mike Wilner of BlueJaysTalk reports.Stroman recently tossed a live batting practice session Tuesday while he continues to work his way back from right shoulder fatigue that has sidelined the right-hander since May 11. Look for a more definitive timetable to emerge after Friday's session as Stroman will be re-evaluated following his outing.
Jun 5 2018Stroman (shoulder) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman didn't experience any setbacks during his latest throwing session, and he's scheduled to progress to throwing in a game sometime during the week. He's been on the shelf since May 11 with right shoulder fatigue.
May 28 2018Stroman (shoulder) will throw long toss and a side session this week, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Stroman has been out since May 11 with shoulder fatigue. He resumed throwing last Monday and will continue to ramp things up in the coming week. Stroman's possible return date remains unclear, but more will hopefully be known following his side session. In the meantime, Sam Gaviglio should continue to fill in for Stroman in the rotation.
May 25 2018Stroman (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session sometime next week, John Lott of The Athletic Toronto reports.Stroman resumed throwing Monday, and he'll take the next step by attempting to throw a bullpen session in the near future. It remains unclear as to when Stroman could return, but the Blue Jays will likely get a better idea on his status following his next scheduled throwing session.
May 22 2018Stroman (shoulder) resumed throwing Monday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.Stroman threw for the first time since landing on the disabled list earlier in May with shoulder fatigue. While he reported feeling good afterwards, the 27-year-old remains without a timetable for his return. Joe Biagini should continue to fill in for Stroman in the meantime.
May 15 2018Stroman (shoulder) will report to the Blue Jays' spring training facility in Florida on Thursday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman landed on the disabled list last week with shoulder fatigue. The 27-year-old is currently still resting, but he'll presumably pick up a throwing program when he reports to Dunedin on Thursday, after which a timetable for his return will hopefully come into focus. For now, Joe Biagini figures to continue to fill in for Stroman in the rotation.
May 11 2018Stroman was placed on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue Friday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. It's not a particularly surprising move, despite the lack of recent reports suggesting that Stroman was battling an injury. He dealt with shoulder inflammation in spring training which forced him to delay his first start. Since then, he's been very ineffective, posting a 7.71 ERA through his first seven starts. A 52.6 percent left on base rate explains some of those struggles, and his 4.02 xFIP suggests that he's getting rather unlucky, but it's still quite clear that something has been wrong. Stroman's 10.2 percent walk rate is well above his 6.7 percent career mark, and he's been knocked around when he's in the zone, posting a 46.8 percent hard-hit rate, far above his 30.5 career figure. He'll miss at least one start while resting his shoulder. Joe Biagini and Sam Gaviglio are the primary candidates to take his spot in the rotation.
May 8 2018Stroman (0-5) allowed five earned runs on nine hits while walking two and striking out two across five innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Mariners.Stroman continued his season-long struggles, allowing the Blue Jays to string together several hits at a time to do the majority of their damage. However, he also allowed a home run for his fourth consecutive start. His 7.71 ERA and 1.71 WHIP illustrate just how bad he has been through seven starts this season.
May 3 2018Stroman reintroduced his cutter into his repertoire Wednesday, throwing the pitch approximately 20-25 times, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Although he took another loss, Stroman had his best performance of the season against Minnesota on Wednesday, and catcher Russell Martin described the cut fastball as the "difference maker." Stroman allowed just two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out five over seven innings, marking his first start this season with fewer than four runs allowed. The right-hander told Martin that he wanted to start throwing the cutter again during their pregame chat. "It's a pitch I'll start to use effectively going forward," Stroman said afterward. He lines up for two starts next week (vs. SEA, vs. BOS).
May 2 2018Stroman (0-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings against the Twins.Though he yielded a home run and took the loss for the third consecutive start, there was finally a sign of Stroman turning the corner after a miserable April. The one walk, two hits and seven innings were all his best tallies in his six starts, and his ERA fell over a full run in the process from 8.88 to 7.52. He'll look to string together another solid outing and try to notch his first win of the year next time out in Seattle on Tuesday.
Apr 27 2018Stroman (0-3) took the loss against the Rangers on Friday, coughing up six runs on eight hits and a walk over 5.1 innings while striking out four.Texas hung a four-spot on him in the first inning, highlighted by Joey Gallo's two-run homer, but Stroman was able to settle down somewhat after that and give the Jays a chance to catch up before allowing two more runs in the sixth. The right-hander now has an 8.88 ERA on the season, and Friday's outing was the first in which he didn't issue multiple free passes. Stroman will try to turn things around Wednesday on the road against the Twins.
Apr 21 2018Stroman fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing eight runs (six earned) in 5.1 innings Saturday against the Yankees. He gave up five hits (including one home run) and walked four while striking out five.Stroman was mostly clean through five innings, allowing just one run on a solo shot to Aaron Judge in the third. The wheels came off in the sixth, though, as the Yankees went single, walk, single, walk, error, strikeout, and double before Stroman was finally pulled. The Blue Jays' ace is off to a very poor start to the season, allowing at least four earned runs in each of his first four starts. His ERA now stands at 8.55. His start to the season was delayed slightly by shoulder inflammation and it's possible that the issue is still affecting him, though the team hasn't given any indication that that's the case.
Apr 13 2018Stroman gave up four earned runs in five innings on nine hits, striking out five and walking two in the Blue Jays' 8-4 victory over the Indians on Friday.Stroman's early-season struggles continued in this one and he hasn't given up less than four earned runs in any of his three starts in 2018. The 26-year-old right-hander has a brutal 7.98 ERA through 14.2 innings and although it's too early for the panic button, this certainly hasn't been the start fantasy owners envisioned coming off a season where he had a 3.09 ERA in 201 innings. He'll look to get on track in his next start against the Royals on April 18.
Apr 7 2018Stroman (0-1) surrendered five runs on six hits and five walks across 4.2 innings en route to the loss Saturday against the Rangers. He struck out three.Stroman's command was less than stellar in this one, as he threw just 44 of his 95 pitches for strikes. He managed to navigate the first four frames with just one run allowed thanks to some nifty escape work, but the Rangers eventually got to him with a string of doubles in the fifth inning. The right-hander will look to lower his lofty 8.38 ERA in his next start Friday against Cleveland.
Apr 1 2018Stroman (shoulder) will start Sunday's game against the Yankees.Since being sidelined in early March with shoulder inflammation and being ruled out for Opening Day, Stroman has progressed as expected while building up his arm in simulated and exhibition games, so he won't miss a turn in the rotation to begin the season. It's not expected that Stroman will face any restrictions with his pitch count as he closes out the Blue Jays' four-game series with New York.
Apr 1 2018Stroman gave up four runs over five innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Sunday.During his time in Sunday's game, Stroman gave up three hits and three walks. Although he allowed four runs, all of which came in the game's third frame, Stroman managed to fan eight batters during his five-inning effort. He'll look to improve when he next takes the mound against the Rangers on Saturday.
Mar 20 2018Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed Tuesday that Stroman (shoulder) would start the team's fourth game of the season April 1 against the Yankees, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Stroman entered spring training as the leading candidate to pick up the Opening Day nod, but that will instead fall to J.A. Happ after the 26-year-old experienced shoulder inflammation early in camp. The injury prevented Stroman from making his spring debut until this past Saturday, so he'll be slightly behind the rest of his rotation mates while he looks to build up to a starter's workload over his final two outings before the season begins. With Stroman not set to miss any turns through the rotation, Joe Biagini won't be needed to make a spot start and could head to the bullpen or report to Triple-A Syracuse to begin the campaign.
Mar 18 2018Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed Sunday that Stroman (shoulder) is tentatively in line to start the Blue Jays' fourth game of the season April 1 against the Yankees, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports. With the inflammation in his throwing shoulder having since subsided, Stroman took the mound for the first time this spring Saturday, tossing two scoreless innings in an exhibition against the Canadian Junior National Team. According to Chisholm, Stroman said after the outing that he was pleased with his changeup and sinker and expects his slider to improve in his subsequent spring starts. Because he remains further behind his rotation mates in terms of his innings progression, Stroman isn't under consideration for the Opening Day nod, but his availability for the team's first series means that the Blue Jays won't require a temporary starter in his stead.
Mar 17 2018Stroman (shoulder) said he expects to pitch in the season-opening four-game series against the Yankees, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman, who has been slowed in camp by a bout of shoulder inflammation, said he felt physically strong after tossing a pair of scoreless innings in his spring debut against the Canadian National Junior team Saturday. While he's already been ruled out for Opening Day, the 26-year-old righty is expecting to make his season debut April 1, the team's fourth game of the season.
Mar 15 2018Stroman (shoulder) will make his spring debut Saturday, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.Stroman is scheduled to pitch a few innings against the Canadian National Junior team, a natural progression from his successful bullpen session Monday. The 26-year-old has already been ruled out for Opening Day, but a return within the opening four-game series against the Yankees is not out of the question, according to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca. An updated timetable is likely to become available following Saturday's outing.
Mar 12 2018Stroman (shoulder) has been ruled out for Opening Day, but he could still pitch during the Jays' season-opening four-game series with the Yankees, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports. On a positive note, Stroman felt great after throwing a bullpen session Monday morning. The Jays did not announce a replacement for Stroman to start the season opener, and an updated timetable for his return should materialize after he begins pitching in game situations during the final two-plus weeks of spring training. If Stroman misses enough time to temporarily open up a rotation spot, Joe Biagini appears to be the frontrunner to pick up any available starts.
Mar 10 2018Stroman (shoulder) moved to long toss Saturday and will throw a bullpen session at some point within the next few days, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman said that he felt great and had no issues during his third straight day of throwing the ball around. Manager John Gibbons remarked that the right-hander is not entirely starting from scratch since he's been able to throw since January, which leaves the possibility that he will be ready for Opening Day. Expect a clearer picture of his timetable after he's able to go through the bullpen session early next week.
Mar 9 2018Stroman (shoulder) was able to successfully play catch Thursday and Friday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. The Blue Jays are currently devising a throwing program for Stroman now that he seems to be recovering from the right shoulder inflammation that has kept him sidelined since February. That said, it still seems doubtful that Stroman will be ready in time for Opening Day.
Mar 7 2018Stroman (shoulder) is expected to play catch Thursday according to pitching coach Pete Walker, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports. The right-hander has yet to begin throwing in any capacity after being shut down with right shoulder inflammation in late February. On Tuesday, manager John Gibbons said that the doctors felt good about Stroman's health and that once he gets over the inflammation, it shouldn't be an issue ever again. Obviously this is optimistic but the club is expected to figure out a plan for Stroman following his time playing catch. It's still a high possibility that he will wind up starting the 2018 season on the disabled list, but more should be known within the next couple days.
Mar 6 2018Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Tuesday that Stroman (shoulder) won't resume throwing for at least a few more days, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports. "The doctors feel good [about Stroman's health]....Once he gets over [the right shoulder inflammation], they don't think that it'll be an issue ever again," Gibbons said.Gibbons also mentioned that the team has a tentative target date for Stroman to resume his throwing program, but the team isn't ready to reveal when that will happen. With no firm timeline for a return to the mound in place, Stroman is a good bet to open the season on the disabled list, though the comments Gibbons relayed from team doctors suggests a long-term absence isn't believed to be in play for the 26-year-old. In any case, Stroman's likely unavailability for the start of the season could open a spot in the rotation for Joe Biagini as the Jays' No. 5 starter.
Feb 27 2018Stroman is battling shoulder inflammation which may cause him to miss Opening Day, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Stroman doesn't have a timetable for his spring debut and wouldn't commit to being ready by Opening Day, though he did say he would be ready near the start of the season. He's been a workhorse the past two seasons, pitching over 200 innings in both, and while he did miss most of the 2015 season, that was with a torn ACL rather than arm trouble. If his shoulder injury is no worse than initially reported, he may not miss more than a start or two (if any), which wouldn't be a significant hit to his fantasy stock. Of course, there's always the possibility that the issue lingers and affects his performance or resurfaces throughout the season, so at the very least this adds some amount of risk to Stroman's profile.
Feb 15 2018Stroman announced on his personal Twitter account that he lost his arbitration hearing. As a result of this decision, the right-hander will make $6.5 million rather than the $6.9 million figure that he requested. Ultimately, it doesn't make much of a difference from a fantasy perspective, but it could "fuel the fire" as Stroman put it in his Tweet. He'll look to build off a stellar 2017 campaign in which he posted a 3.09 ERA and a 164:62 K:BB in 33 starts.
Sep 30 2017Stroman (13-9) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk over four innings against the Yankees. He struck out two and issued one walk. The right-hander ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing four hits, including a homer, while also uncorking a wild pitch. Stroman finishes the year as a borderline top-30 starting pitcher in terms of earned fantasy value, but he did not add to his strikeout rate as some hoped, and his walk rate went in the wrong direction; the peripherals suggest Stroman will have a tough time maintaining an ERA right around 3.00 again next season.
Sep 24 2017Stroman (13-8) allowed three runs on five hits and four walks across 5.2 innings to earn the win Sunday against the Yankees. He struck out two.Stroman put men on base with regularity, but he managed to make it into the sixth inning with just one run on his ledger. He struggled at that point, allowing a solo home run to Aaron Judge and an RBI double to Greg Bird before his removal. Luckily he had the luxury of a large early lead and still qualified for his 13th win, furthering his career high in that category. Stroman's 3.01 ERA is also his career best for a full season, and he will look to put a punctuation mark on a great season Saturday against this same Yankees club.
Sep 19 2017Stroman (12-8) got the win Tuesday against the Royals after allowing one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings.Stroman and Kansas City starter Ian Kennedy had matching shutouts going through five innings, but Kennedy blinked first by allowing a two-run homer to Darwin Barney in the sixth, which was all the support Stroman needed to lock down his first victory since Aug. 16. While he has six quality starts in his past nine outings, Stroman only has two wins to show for those efforts. The righty will look to build on this performance Sunday against the Yankees, but that won't be easy with New York steamrolling opponents of late.
Sep 13 2017Stroman (11-8) took the loss Wednesday against Baltimore after allowing two unearned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven over six innings. Two unearned runs in the first inning led to a tough loss Wednesday for Stroman, who hasn't found the win column in his last five starts. It was the second time this season in which the pitcher was tagged with a loss despite not giving up an earned run. He worked around a bit of trouble by doing what he does best -- inducing double plays -- and now leads MLB pitchers with 31 grounball double plays on the season. In 30 starts this year, Stroman owns a solid 3.08 ERA, but a less than stellar 1.31 WHIP over 184.1 innings. The right-hander will look to get on track and snag his first win since mid-August when he toes the rubber for Tuesday's home game against Kansas City.
Sep 8 2017Stroman (11-7) allowed four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings to take the loss Friday against the Tigers.Stroman gave up all of the damage when he allowed a grand slam to Nick Castellanos, while the offense was unable to score enough runs to take him off the hook for the loss. He's held opponents to two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven starts, and despite having won just a single game over the past month, he remains as a decent fantasy starter. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Orioles.
Sep 7 2017Stroman (elbow) will take the mound for Friday's game against the Tigers, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Stroman was diagnosed with a right elbow contusion after getting struck by a line drive during his previous outing this past Saturday. The right-hander was able to toss a side session Wednesday, and with all systems checking out, appears ready for Friday's series opener after receiving an extra day of rest due to the club's scheduled off day.
Sep 5 2017Stroman (elbow) will throw a side session Wednesday to determine his status for Friday's start against the Tigers, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.Stroman exited his last start in the second inning with an elbow contusion, though the 26-year-old remains confident he'll be able to take his next turn in the rotation. He was able to play catch Tuesday with no issues, and if he checks out after Wednesday's side session, he'll be cleared to make his next start on schedule.
Sep 3 2017Stroman (elbow) said via his Twitter feed that he's "good" and will "be ready to rock" for his next start Friday vs. Detroit. The Jays' ace avoided a potentially serious injury when he was struck by a line drive that forced him out of Saturday's game against Baltimore. Stroman was diagnosed with a right elbow contusion, but he's confident there will be no need to skip his turn in the rotation this week.
Sep 2 2017Stroman has been diagnosed with a right elbow contusion, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.X-rays were negative, which is great news as it looked like a potentially serious injury when it first happened. The ball that struck Stroman was clocked at 107.5 mph off the bat of Mark Trumbo, and Stroman was writhing in pain on the ground immediately following the incident. His status for his next start may not be determined until early next week.
Sep 2 2017Stroman left Saturday's game after being struck in the arm by a line drive.Stroman went down in a heap after being struck by a ball off the bat of Mark Trumbo, and he seemed to be clutching his right arm. He struck out three of the first six batters he faced before Trumbo stepped to the plate.
Aug 28 2017Stroman allowed just two runs (one earned) on seven hits and struck out four over six innings but was stuck with a no-decision Monday against Boston.Stroman now has four quality starts in his last five outings with a nifty 25:7 K:BB over 32.1 innings. Unfortunately, he is just 1-1 over that stretch. The bullpen promptly gave away Stroman's lead in the seventh inning. Stroman's 11-6 record this year is solid, but it could be so much better with a little support from his team. He now owns a 3.11 ERA over 170.2 innings in 2017.
Aug 24 2017Stroman allowed five runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over 5.1 innings Wednesday while striking out four but didn't factor into the decision in a 7-6 win over the Rays. The Jays staked Stroman to a 5-0 lead through two innings thanks to four homers of their own, and despite his own difficulties keeping the ball in the park he exited the game in line for his 12th win of the year before the bullpen gave up the tying run in the seventh inning. He'd surrendered only one home run in his previous 66.2 innings over 10 starts, so chalk this performance up to it being just one of those nights. Stroman will next take the mound Monday at home against the Red Sox.
Aug 16 2017Stroman (11-6) took down the Rays on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over 6.1 innings while striking out seven. The right-hander continues to give the Blue Jays consistent innings, lasting more than six frames in eight of his last nine starts while posting a 2.17 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 44:24 K:BB in 54 innings. Stroman's benefited from eight unearned runs during that time, however, making his 2.99 ERA on the year somewhat deceptive heading into Tuesday's rematch with the Rays, this time in Tampa.
Aug 11 2017Stroman (10-6) allowed four runs, none of which was earned, on four hits and one walk while striking out four over eight innings to take the loss Friday against the Pirates.Stroman gave up all four runs in the third inning, but then shut the Pirates' bats down the rest of the way. After struggling slightly in a pair of recent starts, he's allowed two earned runs over his last 14.2 innings to lower his ERA from 3.19 to 3.00, and he's a solid bet to continue being a strong fantasy option. He'll make his next start Wednesday against the Rays.
Aug 6 2017Stroman allowed three runs -- just two earned -- on 11 hits and two walks while striking out six batters through 6.2 innings during Sunday's loss to Houston. He didn't factor into the decision. While the numbers don't jump off the page, Stroman left in line for the victory against a daunting Houston lineup, but Roberto Osuna allowed four runs in the bottom of the ninth to cost Stroman and Toronto the win. Stroman has now allowed just 13 earned runs through 52.1 innings over his past eight outings and sports an impressive 10-5 record, 3.17 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 for the campaign. A date with the Pirates at the Rogers Centre is up next for Stroman.
Aug 1 2017Stroman went 1-1 with a 2.03 ERA in July -- his best such mark for any month of the campaign -- with 25 strikeouts over five starts and 31 innings. The right-hander was effectively wild last month, posting a career-worst 14.5 percent walk rate. It wasn't just free passes that hurt Stroman, as his 19.1 percent strikeout frequency was a season low. That said, opponents' hard-contact rate dropped, and for the first time in his four-year career, Stroman did not give up a home run all month. The 26-year-old will enter August with a 3.08 ERA, sixth-best in the American League.
Jul 27 2017Stroman was ejected from Thursday's game against the Athletics. The young starter had a feud with umpire Will Little after a few close pitches were ruled to be outside the strike zone which ultimately led to his removal. Stroman was in line for the loss upon his removal after going 4.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and six walks. He also struck out four.
Jul 22 2017Stroman allowed a single run on five hits and five walks while striking out seven over 7.2 innings in Saturday's loss to Cleveland.Considering Cleveland scored 13 runs in Friday's series opener and boasts a strong offense, this stands as one of Stroman's best starts of the season. He's found a groove of late and has allowed just four earned runs in 34 innings over his last five starts. With a 2.98 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 7.5 K/9 for the campaign, Stroman should continue to be viewed as a go-to asset. He projects to make his next start against Oakland at the Rogers Centre.
Jul 17 2017Stroman allowed three runs -- all unearned -- on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters during Monday's win over Boston. He didn't factor into the decision. There have been a few blips on the radar for Stroman this year, but he's now allowed three runs or fewer in eight of his past nine outings and sports a 3.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 7.4 K/9 for the campaign. Those are excellent numbers, and the 26-year-old righty should continue to be viewed as a solid fantasy option moving forward. Stroman projects to face Cleveland at Progressive Field in his next start.
Jul 8 2017Stroman (9-5) allowed one run on six hits and three walks while striking out six across seven innings to earn the win Saturday against the Astros.Stroman allowed an RBI double to George Springer, but otherwise kept the Astros bats silent while receiving plenty of run support to earn him his ninth victory of the campaign. He's allowed just three runs over his last three starts to lower his ERA from 3.69 to 3.28, and he remains a strong fantasy option. He'll make his next start at a time yet to be determined after the All-Star break.
Jul 7 2017Stroman (finger) will be able to make his scheduled start for Saturday's game against the Astros, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman was dealing with a blister following his previous start versus the Yankees on Monday. The right-hander left after just 79 pitches, giving up two earned runs off five hits and two walks while earning the loss. He should be at 100 percent going into Saturday's game with no cause for concern moving forward.
Jul 3 2017Stroman (8-5) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks across five innings in Monday's loss to the Yankees. He struck out three.Stroman got off to a rocky start in this one, allowing a pair of runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman in the first inning. He settled down after that point, allowing just three hits over the next four frames, but he was checked for a blister by the training staff at one point and later departed with just 79 pitches under his belt. The severity of any finger issues Stroman is experiencing remains to be seen, but he is currently scheduled to start Saturday against the Astros.
Jul 1 2017In five June starts, Stroman went 2-2 with a 3.69 ERA and 28 strikeouts over 31.2 innings. The right-hander's ERA continued to rise in June, but his strikeout rations and .240 BAA were Stroman's best so far in 2017. His six home runs allowed were a career-high for any single month, although he still managed to walk away with quality starts in all but one outing. Stroman nears the halfway mark ranking in the AL's top ten for wins (eight), innings pitched (100.1) and ERA (3.41). The 24-year-old is currently on pace to set career-best marks in games started, wins and strikeouts.
Jun 28 2017Stroman (8-4) scattered five hits and a walk over 7.2 scoreless innings in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Orioles. He struck out eight. The right-hander threw a career-high 119 pitches (70 strikes) in the dominant outing, generating 11 groundball outs versus only two flyouts to lower his ERA to 3.41. Stroman rebounded nicely from a rough road start against Texas, but he faces a tough task in his next trip to the mound Monday in Yankee Stadium.
Jun 22 2017Stroman (7-4) allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five batters over just four innings during Thursday's loss to Texas. He also allowed a season-high three home runs.Stroman had pitched into the sixth inning in each of his previous eight starts and posted a 2.55 ERA and 1.18 WHIP during that stretch, so it's probably best not to overreact to Thursday's stinker. Texas owns a dangerous lineup, and Globe Life Park in Arlington is a hitter-friendly venue, after all. Stroman will look to rebound against Balitmore at Rogers Centre in his next start.
Jun 17 2017Stroman (7-3) took the loss Saturday against the White Sox despite allowing just three earned runs over 7.0 innings. He struck out five batters and issued one walk, but he gave up three solo home runs.It was an uncharacteristic outing for Stroman as Saturday marked the third time in 14 starts that he's allowed multiple long balls. He was relatively effective otherwise, hitting the five strikeout mark for the sixth time in seven outings. Stroman will have a tough test next time out as he'll get the nod Thursday in Texas.
Jun 11 2017Stroman (7-2) dealt seven very strong innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and no walks while striking out a half dozen in Saturday's victory over Seattle.Saturday marked Stroman's third straight quality start and ninth of the year (13 starts). Dating back to April 23, the right-hander is 6-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 53 strikeouts over 61.2 innings. Through a third of the 2017 season, he ranks in the AL's top-10 for wins, innings pitched and ERA. Stroman has a date with the White Sox for his next start Saturday.
Jun 4 2017Stroman allowed two runs on five hits and one walk across six innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Yankees. He struck out four.Stroman contained the dangerous opposing lineup for the most part, pitching effectively to contact and allowing just one extra-base hit. A pair of RBI from Matt Holiday in the fourth and sixth innings represented the only damage done against hit, but the offense failed to provide him support until Justin Smoak's game-tying home run in the bottom of the sixth, removing any chance for him to earn his fourth consecutive win. Stroman struggled in his first start in May, but he has since allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of six starts to lower his ERA to a shiny 3.25 ahead of Saturday's start against the Mariners.
Jun 1 2017Stroman wrapped up May with a perfect 4-0 record over six starts (32.1 innings).Although he was perfect in May, Stroman's splits were actually down from the campaign's first month. The right-hander earned better marks in April for walk rate, WHIP and FIP. Still, owners can't complain with the 26-year-old's overall performance this season. His 93.5 mph fastball is up to its best average since his rookie year in 2014. Furthermore his 61.6 percent groundball rate is second-best in all of MLB (behind Dallas Keuchel), and Stroman hasn't lost a game since April 18 (eight starts).
May 30 2017Stroman (6-2) limited the Reds to two runs on five hits over six innings while striking five in Monday's victory.Memorial Day marked Stroman's seventh quality start of the year (11 games). He now ranks third in the AL for wins, and seventh in the league for innings pitched (68.2). The young right-hander is also one of just three pitchers with two complete games on record this season. Stroman is slated to make his next start Sunday versus the Yankees.
May 24 2017Stroman (5-2) allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings during Wednesday's win over Milwaukee. While it wasn't Stroman's sharpest outing, the Brewers are a tough matchup at home with a .344 team wOBA at Miller Park. He's also held opponents to two runs or fewer in seven of 10 starts, so escaping with the win without his best stuff was a nice fantasy bonus. Stroman sports a serviceable 3.30 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 7.3 K/9 for the year, and with the Blue Jays starting to provide more run support over the past few weeks, he should continue padding the wins column. Another difficult matchup against the Reds is on deck for Storman.
May 19 2017Stroman (4-2) allowed no runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.2 innings on Thursday in a 9-0 win over Atlanta. He struck out six.It wasn't Stroman's most efficient effort as he needed 103 pitches to get through 5.2 innings, but the Toronto bats gave him all the run support he needed to pick up the win. The 26-year-old also helped his own cause with an opposite-field solo shot in the fourth inning. Stroman looks to be finding his groove, as he has a 1.02 ERA in his last 17.2 innings pitched. He'll toe the rubber again on Wednesday at Milwaukee.
May 13 2017Stroman allowed two earned runs on eight hits and two walks in a win over the Mariners Saturday. He struck out nine.It was a sharp performance for Stroman, but his offense couldn't get it going until after his departure and he was stuck with the no-decision. This was his second straight quality start after being tagged by the Yankees on May 3, a promising sign for fantasy owners who have been frustrated by the 26-year-old's inconsistency. Stroman lowered his ERA to a respectable 3.33 after this latest outing. He will look to keep the momentum going on Thursday at Atlanta.
May 8 2017Stroman (3-2) fired six scoreless innings in Monday's win over the Indians, allowing six hits and two walks with one strikeout.Stroman didn't have his strikeout pitch working in this one, but he induced weak contact regularly and allowed just four men past first base. It was a nice bounce-back performance for Stroman as well as his fantasy owners after he was hit hard in his previous start, and his ERA has returned to a solid 3.38 after his latest display. Though the possibility of an occasional erratic outing still exists, the 26-year-old remains extremely effective when he is on and will look to build on this performance Saturday against the Mariners.
May 6 2017Stroman, who left Wednesday's contest in New York with arm issues, will make his scheduled start Monday against Cleveland, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports.Even though this news comes as expected, it definitely allows owners to breathe a deep sigh of relief. Stroman's mid-week diagnosis of "general arm soreness" is a scary one, but it appears the right-hander avoided any serious issues. Adding to the good news for Stoman's fantasy owners, he's in line to make two starts next week.
May 4 2017Stroman -- who left Wednesday's start early due to arm soreness -- said there are no plans for further tests on his right wing, and he's confident that he'll be ready to make his next start, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports. The departure of Stroman after three innings due to "some general arm tightness" is a worrying development. However, the young gun was optimistic after the game. "It's not something I'm worried about," said Stroman. "I'll just go through my normal progression during the week and I'll be ready to rock Tuesday." The right-hander went on to say he was simply having trouble getting loose on a night when the temperature sat in the mid-50s. Moving forward, it looks safe to assume Stroman will be fine to deploy as usual.
May 3 2017Manager John Gibbons confirmed that Stroman was removed from Wednesday's game early with tightness in his arm, Gregor Chisolm of MLB.com reports.Stroman allowed five runs through three innings before being removed after tossing just 66 pitches. The 26-year-old called it "general arm tightness" and indicated that he would be ready to make his next start against the Indians on Tuesday, though we'll wait to see what the tests Thursday say about his status. Expect another update when more information is released.
May 3 2017Stroman was lifted prematurely from Wednesday's matchup against the Yankees after reportedly feeling discomfort in his armpit, Marly Rivera of ESPN reports.Something was clearly up with Stroman, who was removed after just 66 pitches after the Yankees knocked him around for five runs in three innings. Not much is known about Stroman's status at this point, so expect an update once the Blue Jays provide more information.
Apr 29 2017Stroman (2-2) gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out 10 over 7.1 innings but was stuck with a no-decision in Friday's 7-4 loss to the Rays. The Toronto bullpen once again unraveled in the late innings, denying Stroman a victory despite his second career start with double-digit strikeouts. His 2.97 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 28:7 K:BB through 36.1 innings all suggest the 25-year-old righty is poised for a breakthrough campaign, but he faces a tough test Wednesday on the road against the surging Yankees.
Apr 24 2017Stroman (2-2) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five in Sunday's victory over the Angels.Following a shaky start, an argument with home plate umpire Ramon De Jesus over an illegal quick-pitch ruling seemed to motivate Stroman. The fiery right-hander was angered when the umpire awarded first base to Kole Calhoun in the third inning because the hurler threw a 3-1 pitch before the batter was deemed to be ready. Toronto manager John Gibbons was ejected for arguing the call, and the Angels scored on back-to-back singles immediately afterward. Stroman took a few deep breaths and responded by keeping the Halos off base for the next five innings while retiring 17 consecutive hitters. The 25-year-old has now banked complete games in two of his last three starts. Despite a rather unlucky .320 BABIP, Stroman owns a great 3.10 ERA and 3.03 FIP through four starts. He'll toe the rubber next on Friday against the Rays.
Apr 18 2017Stroman (1-2) gave up six runs on 11 hits and a walk over 4.2 innings in Tuesday's 8-7 loss to Boston. His teammates battled back late, but not quite far enough to get Stroman off the hook. This serves as an ugly reminder to Stroman owners of the perils of AL East pitcher ownership -- all those starts against the Red Sox, Yankees and Orioles promise to be no fun at all. Still, Stroman has quality stuff, so outings like this one should be the exception rather than the rule. He'll next face the Angels on the road Sunday.
Apr 12 2017Stroman (1-1) went the distance against Milwaukee on Wednesday, only to be handed a 2-0 loss. He struck out four while allowing seven hits and a walk; both runs were earned.Chase Anderson surprised on the other end by outpitching Stroman, sending the Blue Jays to their seventh loss in eight games. Stroman is the only Toronto pitcher who's managed to come away with a win in the early going; that's bad news for Jays fans, but it's good news for Stroman owners, as he's off to a terrific start, posting a 1.76 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 15.1 innings. He'll next take the ball against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Apr 6 2017Stroman (1-0) picked up the win in Thursday's contest with the Rays, allowing one earned run on six hits across 6.1 innings. He also struck out five and walked two.The "Stro Show" was on full display Thursday night, as the right-hander cruised through his first six innings before conceding a run in the seventh and being chased from the ballgame. Stroman wasn't overly accurate (only 56 of his 89 pitches were strikes), but it was good to see that he induced nine groundouts to just one flyout, a line that should transfer well to the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. Stroman will get an opportunity to strut his stuff again next Wednesday when the Blue Jays host the Brewers.
Mar 23 2017Stroman threw six shutout innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three during Team USA's Wednesday victory over Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic championship game.Stroman lost a no-hitter in the top of the seventh. Only 44 of his 73 pitches resulted in a strike, but to log that many innings on that crisp a count proved efficient, and that approach makes his current and future fantasy owners smile. Stroman's strikeout rate doesn't befit that of a fantasy ace, and the right-hander comes in a notch below that tier. Still, even after the added WBC stretch, the control- and groundball-happy right-hander should chew up close to 200 innings and could enjoy a bump in whiffs now that he's another year removed from a torn ACL.
Mar 22 2017Stroman will start Wednesday for Team USA against Puerto Rico in the WBC finale, MLB.com reports. The right-hander will make his third start in this year's World Baseball Classic, and his second opposite Seth Lugo. Lugo got the better of Stroman last Friday, as he held Team USA to three runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, while Stroman gave up four runs on eight hits over 4.2 frames. Look for Stroman to rejoin Blue Jays camp before the end of the week.
Mar 17 2017Stroman is scheduled to start Friday for Team USA against Puerto Rico in the WBC, MLB.com reports. He will oppose Seth Lugo at Pecto Park in his second start in the World Baseball Classic. While Stroman will be facing a team that includes the likes of Carlos Correa, Francisco Lindor and Carlos Beltran, his confidence should be sky high after a dominant performance against an even more dangerous Dominican Republic lineup his last time out. Stroman held the Dominican Republic to three hits over 4.2 scoreless innings last weekend, striking out three batters with zero walks.
Mar 12 2017Stroman twirled 4.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits while issuing no walks and striking out four against the Dominican Republic in the WBC on Saturday night.Employing a lively mix consisting mostly of fastballs, sliders and changeups, Stroman did what he does best to keep the powerful Dominican bats at bay -- keep the ball on the ground. The righty led MLB starters in 2016 with a 60 percent ground-ball rate while forcing 49 percent of opposing hitters to "top" batted balls, according to Statcast, the second-best rate in baseball last year. Simply put, Stroman is as good as any pitcher in the world at getting hitters to pound pitches into the dirt, and he showed it Saturday by collecting seven groundouts without allowing a single fly ball in fair territory. Stroman threw 64 pitches, one below the first-round maximum and (by tournament rules) will not be eligible to pitch for four days. If Team USA reached the second round at San Diego's Petco Park, the young gun will be available to start again.
Mar 11 2017Stroman is starting Saturday's WBC game against the Dominican Republic. He will face a loaded Dominican lineup that has nine legitimate MLB hitters, so this will be quite the test for Stroman. The plan is for Stroman to log four innings and for Tanner Roark to come in and also log four innings before handing it over to either Andrew Miller or David Robertson.
Mar 1 2017Stroman struck out three Pirates over two perfect frames Monday in his spring debut.Stroman revealed a downright filthy arsenal of pitches Monday, which explains why he's been boisterously asserting his confidence level this spring. "I had a good mix of everything," he told reporters after the game. "[Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia] did a great job of kind of mixing all my pitches. Slider, curveball, cutter, change, heater, sinker. I have a good amount of weapons to attack hitters and I'm extremely confident this year and ready to go." The 25-year-old righty, who got off to a slow start last season while rebounding from ACL surgery the prior year, didn't allow a ball out of the infield as he made Pirates' hitters look second-rate. Stroman had a 4.92 ERA through August last season, but turned it around with a 3.28 ERA in his last 11 starts.
Feb 21 2017Stroman said his surgically-repaired knee "finally feels 100 percent," and he's confident he can throw upwards of 240 innings this season, Paul Hagen of MLB.com reports. Now two years removed from surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, Stroman said Monday that his body "feels the best it's ever felt." The Jays' ace also commented on overcoming 2016's early-season struggles. "I just got kind of out of whack at some point," the 25-year-old said. "I just simplified everything on my own at that point, and that's something I'm going to stick with this year. It's in my delivery and in my motion. I feel excited this year for what I'm going to do." After failing to meet expectations in last year's campaign, Stroman could slip down some draft boards past his true value. He has the talent to be a solid ace, or at the very least, a strong second option across most fantasy formats.
Feb 14 2017Stroman won his arbitration hearing Tuesday and will receive $3.4 million for the 2017 season, FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman reports. The Blue Jays were proposing a $3.1 million salary, but the arbiter sided with Stroman, who is considered by some to be the team's No. 1 starter. This will be the second year in a row that a strong finish to the prior season has Stroman generating a lot of buzz in drafts as a breakout candidate. He posted a 4.37 ERA last year, but his fielding independent numbers were much stronger and he notched a 3.89 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 83 strikeouts over 88 innings in the second half.
Feb 1 2017Stroman said the left knee he had surgically repaired in March 2015 is back to 100 percent, the Toronto Star reports. The Jays' ace has emphasized the importance of having a stronger landing leg, mentioning that it will allow him to throw harder, go deeper into games and have more control. In 2015, Stroman returned to the mound six months after surgery to help the Blue Jays end a 22-year playoff drought. He was the Opening Day starter last year and worked over 200 innings in the regular season, posting a 9-10 record and 4.37 earned-run average over 32 starts. Due to last season's unappealing numbers, some owners may make the unwise decision to lower their interest before draft day rolls around.
Dec 4 2016Stroman announced Saturday that he will play for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. The extra work before spring training may do Stroman some good. After missing most of 2015 recovering from ACL surgery, the righty struggled to knock off the rust early in 2016. Prior to the All-Star break, he posted a 4.89 ERA while managing 6.4 K/9 over 18 starts. Following the Midsummer Classic, Stroman dished up a 3.68 ERA and an 8.5 K/9. The WBC will give the 25-year-old an opportunity to enter 2017 well-oiled and ready to go.
Oct 13 2016Stroman will start Game 3 of the ALCS on Monday against the Indians, Ben Nicholson-Smith of SportsNet reports.Although he finished the regular season with a 4.37 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, Stroman was much more dialed in during Toronto's Wild Card Game against the Orioles. In said game, he allowed just two runs across six innings. Stroman is slated to face Josh Tomlin in Monday's game.
Oct 3 2016Stroman was named the starting pitcher for Tuesday's wild-card game against the Orioles, MLB Network Radio reports. There was some debate about whether Stroman or Francisco Liriano would get the ball for Toronto in the winner-take-all game Tuesday, but general manager Ross Atkins decided to go with the former. Atkins alluded that the decision was partially made due to certain matchups the Blue Jays hoped to exploit, Liriano's experience coming out of the bullpen, as well as the fact that Stroman was on the team since the beginning of the season. Although his 0-5 record in September didn't show it, the 25-year-old right-hander did have a solid finish to the season, posting a 3.41 ERA and 0.7 HR/9 in the final month of the season, although his career 5.27 ERA against Baltimore doesn't instill any extra confidence. Stroman will start opposite Chris Tillman to decide who will face the Rangers in the ALDS.
Sep 30 2016Stroman (9-10) tossed seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three Orioles in Thursday's loss.Stroman's final start of the season pushed him past the 200-inning mark, making him the only Jays' starter to reach the plateau this season. He finishes the year with a 4.37 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 169 strikeouts in 204 innings. The 25-year-old's 2016 campaign fell sizably short of most projections, but in retrospect, the expectations may have been unwarranted. Stroman's talent and potential are that of a future Cy Young candidate, but he made only 24 career starts -- and just four last season after tearing his ACL in March -- before hurling 32 games this season. The right-hander did improve in the second half -- he posted a 4.89 ERA prior to the break and a 3.68 ERA after the Midsummer Classic -- and he's on the right track to a long-term success.
Sep 24 2016Stroman didn't factor into the decision Saturday versus the Yankees but turned in a stellar performance, firing seven innings of scoreless, one-hit ball, issuing three walks and striking out five. The right-hander was locked in a pitcher's duel with veteran CC Sabathia through seven frames, neutralizing the Yankees lineup to the same degree that the veteran lefty managed against the Blue Jays. Stroman has actually dropped four straight decisions but has been the victim of some hard luck, as he's now posted quality starts in three straight appearances and four out of his last five overall. He'll have one more chance for his second career double-digit win season when he takes on the Orioles next Thursday.
Sep 19 2016Stroman suffered his ninth loss of the season Sunday versus the Angels despite only allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks across six innings. He struck out three.Stroman worked out of a couple of jams without serious damage and allowed just one extra-base hit, but the typically potent Jays offense could not pick him up versus Alex Meyer. The right-hander has now rattled off five quality starts in his last seven tries and has lowered his ERA to 4.50. Toronto will need Stroman at his best when the postseason rolls around and he will have the opportunity to build on his recent success Saturday versus the Yankees.
Sep 13 2016Stroman (9-8) threw six innings of three-run ball Tuesday, giving up four hits and four walks while striking out four and earning the loss against the Rays.Stroman struggled with his command Tuesday, throwing just 52 of 92 pitches for strikes and walking four. The four walks are the most yielded by Stroman since June 26. All of the damage against Stroman came in the fifth, as a double and a walk set up Alexei Ramirez's three-run homer to give the Rays a lead they would never relinquish. Stroman now has a 4.55 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the year.
Sep 8 2016Stroman (9-7) allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out eight and walked only one over five frames in a loss to the Yankees on Wednesday.Once again, run support was an issues, as Toronto scored under three runs for the fourth time in Stroman's last seven starts. He looked sharp, inducing 15 swing-and-misses, but a two-run third inning, which included a solo home run from Starlin Castro, was enough to propel the Yankees to a series sweep. Stroman will hope to get more run support in his next start Tuesday against the Rays.
Sep 2 2016Stroman (9-6) allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in a losing effort Friday against Tampa Bay.Stroman pitched well enough to win, recording his fifth quality start in his last six outings, but Toronto's lineup ultimately was held in check by Rays' starter Alex Cobb. While the 25-year old righty continued his solid second half to the season, it should be noted that his three strikeouts in six innings were a sharp regression from the 11.08 K/9 he recorded in August.
Sep 1 2016Stroman's next start will be moved up from Saturday to Friday against the Rays, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports.Stroman will take Francisco Liriano's scheduled start Friday but the team failed to announce a starter for Saturday's contest. The 25-year-old hurler will look for a better result than his last outing in which he surrendered five runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings.
Aug 27 2016Stroman didn't factor into the decision Saturday versus the Twins, giving up five earned runs on nine hits, a walk and a wild pitch over six innings. He struck out five. The right-hander was able to avoid the long ball but gave up several timely hits, particularly in the four-run fourth inning. He got into trouble early uncorking a wild pitch that plated Brian Dozier in the first, and then surrendered a run-scoring single to Miguel Sano and a pair of RBI doubles to Eduardo Escobar and Brian Dozier in the fourth. The five earned runs were the most Stroman had surrendered in a start since July 15 against the A's, but he encouragingly avoided the long ball for the second straight start. The 25-year-old will try to get back in the win column when he takes on the Rays next Saturday.
Aug 22 2016Stroman (9-5) tossed 7.1 innings, allowing one run, seven hits and one walk while striking out nine in Sunday's no-decision versus the Indians.Stroman turned a one-run lead over to the bullpen in the eighth that was immediately squandered, costing the right-hander his 10th win of the year. The 25-year-old has been locked in this month, and is throwing up some of his best numbers all year. Through four August starts, Stroman has posted a 2.10 ERA and 1.01 WHIP with 34 strikeouts over 25.2 innings.
Aug 14 2016Stroman (9-5) gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits over 6.1 innings while striking out eight in Sunday's win over the Astros.Since the start of July, Stroman has kicked things into another gear, posting a 3.33 ERA and 55:7 K:BB in 52.1 innings over eight starts. Home runs remain a bit of an issue as he has a 1,4 HR/9 over that stretch, but as long as he keeps attacking the strike zone better results should come. His next start will come Sunday in Cleveland.
Aug 7 2016Stroman (8-5) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings to take the loss Sunday at the Royals.Stroman had no offensive support, and he left the contest with a 3-0 deficit, which led to his fifth loss of 2016. This was the first loss he suffered since June 26, and he now has a 4.76 ERA to go along with a 1.31 WHIP. Both his ERA and WHIP are significantly higher than they were in either of his first two seasons in the majors. He'll make his next start Sunday against the Astros.
Aug 1 2016Stroman allowed just one run on three hits and a walk and struck out 13 over seven innings in a no-decision Monday against the Astros.Stroman has been finding a bit of a groove of late, with four quality starts in his past six appearances. This one was by far his best of the season, as he topped his previous season high of nine strikeouts set back on May 1 against the Rays. Stroman owns a brilliant 43:5 K:BB and a 3.29 ERA in his past 41 innings as it looks like he's putting it together just in time for the stretch run.
Jul 26 2016Stroman threw 6.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven and earning a no-decision Tuesday against the Padres.Stroman's primary blemish came in the sixth when he allowed a three-run bomb to San Diego outfielder Alex Dickerson, which gave the Padres a 4-3 lead. Toronto tied the game in bottom of the seventh, and went on to win 7-6 on a walk-off wild pitch in 12 innings. After posting a 3.65 ERA his rookie season in 2014 and missing most of 2015 due to injury, Stroman has taken a step back in 2016, sporting an ERA of 4.92. Home runs been part of the reason for Stroman's struggles, as the Dickerson blast was Stroman's 15th allowed, more than double the seven he allowed in 2014.
Jul 20 2016Stroman (8-4) picked up the win Wednesday in Arizona. He gave up a lone run on eight hits while striking out six over eight innings.Wednesday marked the first time all season in which Stroman didn't issue a walk while pitching four-plus innings. Coming off one of his worst starts of the year, the right-hander looked noticeably improved throughout his 99-pitch effort. He didn't allow an extra-base hit and recorded most of his outs on the ground en route to his third quality start in four tries. Stroman's ability to keep the ball down in the zone helped shave his ERA from 5.15 to 4.90.
Jul 15 2016Stroman was rocked for six runs on nine hits and a walk across just 4.2 innings in Friday's start against Oakland. He struck out five and did not factor into the decision.Stroman allowed three runs while struggling through the first four innings, and he was chased from the game after allowing back-to-back home runs with two outs. He had shown signs of improvement with a pair of quality starts heading into the All-Star break, but Friday's poor results raised his ERA back up to 5.15 and his WHIP to 1.36. Stroman has been a mixed bag this season, making him a risky play Friday at home to Seattle in his next start.
Jul 11 2016Through 18 first-half starts, Stoman (7-4) posted a 4.89 ERA and 1.33 WHIP while tallying an 83:33 K:BB through 116 innings.Entering the season as Toronto's ace, Stroman was disappointingly far from fulfilling his preseason expectations. His WHIP is way out of whack from his previous years, and the right-hander's 2.6 BB/9 is well beyond his career average. Many predicted Stroman to rack up the K's, but his 6.4 K/9 ranks 78th among 96 qualified pitchers. He only had 24 MLB starts entering the season, so the expectations surrounding the relatively-inexperienced 25-year-old may have been a bit unfair. It's worth noting that most of the damage done to Stroman came curtesy of the Red Sox and Orioles, who have the No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, OPS in the majors. In six combined starts against those powerhouses (three versus each), Stroman went 1-2 with an 8.90 ERA, .365 BAA and a 22:11 K:BB. Outside of the Red Sox and Orioles, he made starts against nine other organizations, going 6-2 with a 3.55 ERA, .225 BAA and a 61:22 K:BB versus that group. Stroman makes a great buy-low candidate as his numbers tell an exaggerated story of how his 2016 campaign has gone so far.
Jul 6 2016Stroman (7-4) allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out six over eight innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Royals. After giving up a run in his last inning of work, Stroman appeared headed for a no-decision, but the offense picked him up by scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to lift him to his seventh win of the year. Stroman struggled in four of his five starts in June, but he's fired a pair of quality starts already this month to bring his ERA back down to 4.89. His next start will be after the All-Star break.
Jul 1 2016Stroman received a no-decision in Friday's 2-1, 19-inning loss to the Indians. He surrendered five hits, an earned run and a walk over 6.2 innings while striking out six. After an extended stretch of mostly poor pitching, Stroman ironically got his act together against the hottest team in baseball. He threw 65 of 96 pitches for strikes, notched first-pitch strikes on 17 of 28 hitters, and induced 11 swings-and-misses. The 25-year-old finished June with a 1-3 record and 7.76 ERA over five outings with only one quality start during that span, so Friday's effort was certainly a sight for sore eyes in every sense. Stroman will attempt to continue steering the ship in the right direction next Wednesday versus the Royals.
Jun 25 2016If Stroman cannot turn around his season soon, the team will considering sending him to Triple-A Buffalo to sort things out, the Toronto Sun reports. In his past seven starts, Stroman has an unacceptable ERA of 7.59. Opponents are hitting a lusty .353 with an on-base percentage of .400. He has a big start coming up Sunday in Chicago and, if he delivers more of the same, then the Jays will no doubt have to consider giving Stroman some time at Buffalo to work on his game. They have a viable option at Triple-A Buffalo in Drew Hutchison who has compiled a solid 2.87 ERA over 13 starts, averaging better than a strikeout per inning, along with a WHIP of 1.09.
Jun 19 2016Stroman (6-3) got chased early in Sunday's loss to the Orioles, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out four. He's now failed to last longer than 5.2 innings in five of his last seven starts, and Stroman's 5.23 ERA can't be written off as mere bad luck given his weak 67:27 K:BB in 96.1 innings on the season. The Blue Jays a couple of days off this coming week, affording him some extra rest before he faces the White Sox on the road next Sunday.
Jun 9 2016Stroman continued struggling Thursday, giving up four runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings against Baltimore. He struck out just two and walked one.The third-year man has now given up a brutal 17 runs (all earned) on 28 hits with an 11:7 K:BB in 16.1 innings spanning his last three starts. That's not the full extent of his struggles, either -- he's given up four or more runs in six of his last nine outings. The good news is that Stroman continues to do a great job keeping the ball on the ground and his poor strand-rate luck won't persist, but he needs to help his own cause by finding a way to fool more hitters. His fastball, cutter and change have all graded out negatively this year, and no pitcher can get by on breaking balls alone. That said, Stroman's a terrific talent who has the ability to adjust and pull out of this tailspin. His next start comes against the light-hitting Phillies on Tuesday, which should help.
Jun 5 2016Stroman (5-2) gave up nine hits, six earned runs and five walks over 5.2 innings in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Red Sox. He struck out four. The 25-year-old saw the Red Sox get the better of him for the second time in a week, and he surrendered a total of 13 earned runs over 11 innings over those two starts. Control was a considerable problem for Stroman on Saturday, as the five free passes he issued were a season high. The few bright spots that the right-hander could take from the appearance would include the fact that he didn't surrender any homers after giving up a pair last Saturday, and that he induced 11 swinging strikes. However, his ERA has ballooned almost a full run to 4.82 after his two meetings with Boston, and he's now lost two of his last three decisions. He'll try his luck against the Orioles next Thursday.
Jun 1 2016Stroman will pitch in Saturday's matchup against the Red Sox, Ben Nicholson-Smith of sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman was originally scheduled to throw Friday, but he has since been bumped back a day. R.A Dickey will move form Saturday to Friday. It is unclear what caused the Blue Jays to make this switch, but Stroman will now matchup against the Red Sox's Steven Wright instead of David Price.
May 28 2016Stroman didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-9 victory over the Red Sox, but was hit hard. He surrendered 11 hits, seven earned runs and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out five. The young right-hander pitched to plenty of contact, and was touched up by Xander Bogaerts and Travis Shaw for homers in the fourth and sixth inning, respectively. Stroman hadn't given up a gopher ball since April 19 versus the White Sox, but it was the second time in the last three starts that he did give up seven earned runs. He'll try to get a measure of revenge against this same Red Sox squad in Fenway next Friday.
May 22 2016Stroman (5-1) allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 7.2 innings to earn the win Sunday at the Twins.Stroman was provided a three-run lead in the first inning and had little trouble keeping the Twins' bats silent. He's now allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his last five starts, which has pushed his marks on the year to 3.89 ERA to go along with a 1.17 WHIP. He'll make his next start Saturday against the Red Sox.
May 18 2016Despite suffering his first loss in 16 starts, Stroman (4-1) is not concerned about his performance, or that of the struggling Jays, MLB.com reports.Known for his ability to induce ground balls -- Stroman's 62.3 percent ground-ball rate entering the night was tops among pitchers in the American League -- it was that same strength which bit the recent Duke university graduate on Tuesday. While Stroman did get nine ground-ball outs, he also gave up a majority of his hits on hard hit ground balls and low line drives, and he saw his eleven game unbeaten streak at home come to an end. "That's part of the game, that's baseball," Stroman said about the frustration of the Rays' hitters finding gaps. "You really have to put it in perspective and know that, and do everything you can to wash the start whether it be good or bad, and focus the next four days preparing for the next one. I realize I'm going to have days like that. I never get discouraged regardless of the outing and never take my starts into the next one."
May 17 2016Stroman (4-1) allowed seven runs on 13 hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings in a loss Tuesday against Tampa Bay.Stroman's nine-game winning streak finally ended, thanks to five extra-base hits by the Rays (four doubles and a triple). The Rays were hitting an American League worst .228 entering this game and hitters had just a .220 average against Stroman entering this game. The blowup raised Stroman's ERA to 4.23. He has four starts of at least seven innings and two earned runs allowed or fewer in nine appearances this year, but he just hasn't found the consistency yet.
May 11 2016Stroman (4-0) allowed four runs (two earned), walked two batters, and stuck out five while taking a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Giants in 13 innings. The righty has looked strong to start the season, and Wednesday was no different. Two of the runs the Giants got off of him were not his fault, as shortstop Troy Tulowitzki committed an error. With just two earned runs in the game, he lowed his ERA to 3.54.
May 6 2016Stroman allowed two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out eight over seven innings, but was left with a no-decision in the Jays' 5-2 win over the Dodgers on Friday night.Stroman (4-0) was masterful through six innings, mixing in a variety of crisp breaking pitches with his moving fastball, before tiring a bit and allowing a pair of runs in the seventh inning. He hasn't lost a game since September, 2014 (he made just four starts last year) and has flashed glimpses of the potential he offers early this season despite a seemingly pedestrian 3.60 ERA. It should be noted that the struggling Toronto bullpen has allowed eight inherited Stroman runners to come around and score, significantly inflating his ERA. He'll face off against the Giants in San Francisco next time out.
May 23 2015Stroman (knee) is not ruling out a possible September return, SportsNet's Barry Davis reports. He said Saturday that his rehab is going great and it feels like he has a brand new knee. Depending on where the Jays are in the standings, they could always opt to be cautious with Stroman even if he is medically cleared to pitch later this season. In most leagues, it does not make sense to stash a player who could make a handful of starts in September, but it's worth noting that the possibility exists that he may pitch yet in 2015.
Apr 5 2015Stroman (knee) has been placed on the 60-day DL, Sportsnet's Mike Wilner reports.Stroman is expected to miss the entire 2015 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL, so the move is merely procedural, as it will clear up a spot on the 40-man roster. If offseason rehab goes well, look for Stroman to make a bid for a rotation spot in 2016.
Mar 19 2015Stroman (knee) underwent successful ACL surgery Thursday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports.Stroman will likely miss the entirety of the 2015 season, but will now begin the rehab process as he prepares for the 2016 season. Marco Estrada and Daniel Norris now stand increased chances of making the rotation, while Aaron Sanchez could also be utilized in that role.
Mar 10 2015Stroman has been diagnosed with a torn left ACL and will be out for the season. It's not certain when Stroman suffered the injury, but it occurred while he was participating in a bunting drill, according to Blue Jays broadcaster Mike Wilner. Stroman is one of the top young hurlers in the game, but he will be forced to spend the year recovering instead of pitching a full season at the big league level for the first time. With Stroman sidelined, Marco Estrada and Daniel Norris move up the pecking order in the Blue Jays' starting rotation, and Aaron Sanchez's chances of working as a starter this season increase.
Sep 26 2014Stroman picked up a save after throwing four scoreless innings in relief against Baltimore. He allowed one hit and struck out four.He puts an exclamation point on a very successful rookie season that saw him collect 11 wins while posting a very solid 3.65 ERA. He has already given notice he intends to be a mainstay in Toronto's rotation for years to come.
Sep 23 2014Stroman (suspension) is unlikely to make another start this season, Barry Davis of Sportsnet.ca reports. The expectation was that Stroman would make one more start Friday, after having his suspension reduced from six to five games, but Drew Hutchison is now penciled in to start the opener against Baltimore. Stroman will instead be available out of the bullpen once reinstated. Whereas the 23-year-old Stroman posted a 3.29 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in his 20 starts, he's given up nine earned runs in just 6.1 innings out of the bullpen this season. He's all but assured of a rotation spot coming out of spring training.
Sep 21 2014Stroman has reached an agreement with Major League Baseball to have his suspension reduced from six to five games, Sportsnet.ca reports.Stroman was issued a six-game suspension Wednesday for allegedly throwing at the head of Orioles' catcher Caleb Joseph, but was able to have it reduced one game following his appeal. He'll begin serving the suspension immediately, which would make him eligible for a return Friday against the Orioles. Stroman had originally been scheduled to start Thursday, but it seems likely that a mix of bullpen options will cover for him in that outing.
Sep 17 2014Stroman has been suspended for six games for throwing at Caleb Joseph's head in Monday's game, but he will appeal and thus the suspension won't begin until the appeal is heard, the Toronto Star's Brendan Kennedy reports.Stroman's next scheduled start is Saturday in New York, so that is up in the air until the appeal is heard. There's no scenario where Stroman wouldn't be able to make at least one more start this year, because if the suspension begins before Saturday, he'll still be able to pitch next week. However, it does make it unlikely that Stroman will be able to make two more starts this season, which lessens his value for owners in single-season leagues chasing counting stats.
Sep 15 2014Stroman lost Monday against the Orioles as he pitched six innings and allowed five runs, nine hits and two walks to go along with three strikeouts.Stroman has had some rough starts of late as he has allowed five earned runs in four of his last eight starts to increase his ERA from 3.03 to 3.80. He has shown plenty of promise this season, but might be tiring down the stretch of his rookie season.
Sep 12 2014Stroman's next start has been pushed back to Monday against the Orioles, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. The 23-year-old hasn't fared particularly well against the Rays this season, with seven earned runs allowed over 11 innings, so the Blue Jays will instead start Mark Buehrle in the finale against Tampa. Stroman, who tossed a complete game three-hitter his last time out, will now go Monday against Baltimore, a team he's yet to face this season.
Sep 11 2014Stroman's next start could be moved back from Sunday against the Rays to Tuesday against the Orioles, the Associated Press reports. The Jays haven't made a final decision yet, but Mark Buehrle is available on regular rest to face the Rays on Sunday, and the veteran left-hander has fared better against Tampa Bay than the rookie has this season.
Sep 3 2014Stroman allowed two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out four over six innings in a 7-4 win over Tampa Bay on Wednesday night.Stroman (9-5, 3.83 ERA) weathered a 30-minute power outage in the third inning and returned to complete six solid innings. He cruised through four, but was challenged when the Rays began to put runners on base in the fifth and sixth. He is a bright spot in the rotation despite the need to work on his delivery from the stretch. He'll get the Cubs at the Rogers Centre his next time out.
Aug 27 2014Stroman struck out six and walked one while giving up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits over 7.2 innings to earn his eighth win of the season Wednesday. After scuffling in three of his previous four starts, Stroman turned things around in a big way with Wednesday's performance. The rookie continues to show a steady ability to miss bats, and he'll face his next test Wednesday in Tampa Bay against the Rays.
Aug 22 2014Stroman struggled again Friday night, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, walking three and striking out six over five-plus innings of an 8-0 loss to the Rays. After pitching very well for much of the season, this marks his second consecutive weak outing. He lacked command of the strike zone, needing 102 pitches (63 for strikes) to record 15 outs. After allowing the first three hitters to reach in the sixth (all of which scored) he was pulled. He's scheduled to face Boston in his next outing, but while he remains a high-upside starter, it's possible he could be wearing down a bit.
Aug 15 2014Stroman lasted only 0.2 innings Friday night, as he surrendered five earned runs on five hits while striking out one in an 11-5 loss to the White Sox.Coming off of a strong nine-inning performance versus the Tigers last Saturday, Stroman struggled mightily Friday night and failed to escape the first frame. After posting a 2.18 ERA across 10 starts in June and July, the rookie right-hander has now been hit hard in 2-of-3 outings this month. With a career-high 122.2 innings between Toronto and Triple-A Buffalo already under his belt this year, Stroman could certainly be wearing down a bit.
Aug 9 2014Stroman pitched nine innings of two-run ball Saturday, but got a tough-luck no-decision despite only giving up only four hits and three walks over the nine frames against the Tigers. The three walks tied a season high, and he only struck out four, but it was perhaps his most impressive start of the season. He became the first Blue Jays rookie to pitch nine innings since 2005. After a rough start where he only went three innings against the Astros his last time out, Stroman returned to the form that allowed him to post a 1.71 ERA in July. He'll take the ball again Friday on the road against the White Sox.
Jul 29 2014Stroman beat Boston again Tuesday, tossing seven innings of six-hit, one-run ball while walking two and fanning eight at Fenway Park.Is this guy hot or what? Stroman has picked up the win in his last three starts, lasting seven innings in each while recording a fabulous BB:K ratio of 4:20 and allowing just a single earned run. This little hot streak by the rookie is just what the doctor ordered for the inconsistent Jays, who are on a nice 8-2 run since he beat the Rangers on July 19. If the window hasn't closed on the opportunity to grab him off your wire, you may want to consider pulling the trigger before his next start Sunday at Houston.
Jul 24 2014Stroman (6-2) pitched seven sparkling innings Thursday against Boston, striking out seven while allowing no runs on one hit and two walks.A dazzling start for Stroman, and one that foreshadows his potential in the big leagues. He's now tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and two walks in that time. He'll face the Red Sox again Tuesday, this time in Boston.
Jul 9 2014Stroman was dinged for six runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings of a no-decision against the Angels on Tuesday. He also walked one and fanned four. That's three straight no-decisions for the rookie hurler. Stroman really had no business escaping the loss in this one but was bailed out by by the Jays' bats, whose seven runs were the most they've produced in the last seven games. What's most discouraging about this outing was his inability to hang onto a three-run lead, as the Halos got to him for three runs in the bottom of the fourth after the Jays put up a five-spot in the top of the inning. Through 53.1 innings across eight starts this year, Stroman's ERA now sits above 4.00 at 4.05 to go along with a 13:47 BB:K. Also, the Jays would no doubt like to see him bring down his BABIP, as opposing batters are currently hitting .310 in that category off the young righty.
Jul 4 2014Stroman (4-2, 3.44 ERA) tossed a gem Friday afternoon, holding the A's scoreless over seven innings, but came away with a no-decision in the extra-innings affair. He allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out seven.Since moving into the Jays rotation at the end of May, he has been a dynamo. In seven starts covering 43.1 innings, he is 3-2 with a 1.02 WHIP and a 2.08 ERA while recording 39 strikeouts. He'll take on the Angels in a road contest next time out.
Jun 28 2014Stroman held the White Sox to two runs on two hits and two walks, while striking out six over 6.2 innings, and did not factor into the decision in the Blue Jays' 4-3 loss.Stroman exited having not allowed a run and with the Blue Jays leading 2-0, but Dustin McGowan served up a three-run homer to Dayan Viciedo on his first pitch of the game, thus negating the strong outing from Stroman and sticking him with two earned runs. Regardless, it still goes down as a quality start for the right-hander, his fifth in six turns since joining the rotation. Stroman owns a 4.01 ERA for the season, but a 2.48 ERA as a starter.
Jun 23 2014Stroman won Monday against the Yankees as he pitched eight innings and allowed one run, three hits and one walk to go along with seven strikeouts.Stroman was dominant Monday and made amends for his last start against the Yankees where he lasted only 3.2 innings and allowed two runs. He has recorded a quality start in four of his last five outings, lowering his ERA from 12.79 to 4.25 over that span.
Jun 19 2014Stroman's next start will be moved back from Sunday in Cincinnati to Monday against the Yankees, Brendan Kennedy of the Toronto Star reports.J.A. Happ (groin) will have his next start pushed back to Sunday, thus knocking Stroman and the rest of the rotation back a day. Liam Hendriks will get the spot start Sunday, and Stroman will face the Yankees' Chase Whitley, instead of Cincy ace Johnny Cueto. Stroman's second start during the next scoring period lines up for Saturday against Chicago's Chris Sale.
Jun 17 2014Stroman lasted just 3.2 innings in a loss to the Yankees on Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on four hits while striking out two. He also issued three free passes, the most in four big league starts to date.Other than a two-run shot to Brett Gardner in the second and the aforementioned three walks, Stroman wasn't terrible in this one. The rookie was already in tough against MLB-win leader Masahiro Tanaka, so the fact that his pitch count rose to 98 in less than four innings didn't bode well for his chances in this one. Stroman's issues in his first career start at Yankee Stadium could have been partly due to nerves, as he grew up an hour east in Medford, New York and was pitching in front of family. Nonetheless, he'll get back on the horse looking to improve upon his 5.14 ERA and 3-2 record in his fifth start Sunday in an interleague tilt with the Reds.

Jun 11 2014Stroman gave up three runs on nine hits over six innings in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday afternoon.Josh Willingham gave the Twins a two-run lead in the opening frame with a long ball off of Stroman, but the rookie settled down somewhat from that point forward, getting charged with his third run during his final frame. Stroman will have a pair of road starts next week in two hitter-friendly environments, as he'll face the Yankees on Tuesday before a trip to Cincinnati on June 22.
Jun 6 2014Stroman allowed just one run on seven hits, walking two and striking out seven over six-plus innings of a 3-1 Jays win against the Cardinals on Friday night. It was an impressive outing for Stroman who walked the first batter he faced (he would come around to score the Cardinals only run) but who would settle in and take control as the game went on. Confidence in his entire arsenal grew as the game progressed and he was eventually throwing everything he had to spots while the Cardinals hitters waved weakly at nearly every offering. This is what Toronto and fantasy owners were hoping for and they will look for more of the same when he takes on the Twins at the Rogers Centre in his next outing.
May 31 2014Stroman struck out six and did not walk a batter while giving up one run on five hits over six innings in a win over the Royals on Saturday. The Jays' offense put seven runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, making things quite a bit easier for Stroman in his first big league start. As it lines up, he'll face the Cards at Rogers Centre in his next start Friday.
May 30 2014Stroman has been scratched from Friday's start with Triple-A Buffalo for reasons unrelated to his health, the Buffalo News reports. Stroman himself is unsure of the reason for his scratch, according to Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News.Stroman may be called up or traded, but it's also possible that there is an issue with one of the Blue Jays' starters, which might prompt the team to delay Stroman's outing in case he's needed in the majors. He quite clearly won't be called up Friday, as he's still in Buffalo at the Triple-A Bisons' stadium.
May 30 2014Stroman was held out of Friday's start with Triple-A Buffalo in order to keep the Blue Jays' options open for the upcoming weekend, Sportsnet's Barry Davis reports.Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos indicated that Stroman was held out of Friday's game in case the Blue Jays need help in the bullpen over the weekend. This is much less exciting than a potential trade or spot start, but it shows that the Jays still have plenty of confidence in the talented young right-hander.
May 30 2014Stroman has been called up from Triple-A and will start Saturday versus the Royals, MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm reports. It is safe to say the Stroman's first venture at the Major League Level was not inspiring. The 23-year-old hurler appeared in five games earlier this month, posting a dreadful 12.79 ERA across 6.1 innings before being optioned back to Triple-A on May 18. However, his stellar numbers at the highest level of the minors so far this season tell a different story. In seven starts for Buffalo, Stroman holds a 3.03 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 11.4 K/9.
May 18 2014Stroman was optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo and will rejoin the starting rotation there, ruling him out as a replacement for Dustin McGowan in the Jays' rotation for now, SportsNet's Barry Davis reports. He really struggled out of the bullpen for the Jays, but remains a strong long-term starting pitching prospect. However, it seems like the Jays saw enough from him to decide that now is not the time to insert him into the rotation. There has not been a corresponding call-up announced, but there will be by Tuesday. Todd Redmond appears to be the likely replacement for Dustin McGowan, and could get the start on May 24.
May 16 2014The Blue Jays won't need a replacement for Dustin McGowan in the rotation until May 24, SportsNet's Barry Davis reports.Stroman is the high-upside candidate to take over for McGowan in the rotation, but we may not find out what the Blue Jays plan to do until next week.
May 15 2014Stroman is a candidate to be moved into the Blue Jays' rotation following Dustin McGowan's demotion to the bullpen, Blue Jays' broadcaster Mike Wilner reports.Stroman received a lot of hype following his call-up, but has went on to allow nine earned runs over 6.1 innings since joining the Blue Jays' bullpen. He had solid Triple-A numbers as a starter, posting a 1.69 ERA over five starts, so he could potentially turn in better numbers as a starter, a situation he would be more comfortable in. Todd Redmond is also in consideration to take the vacancy in the rotation, but manager John Gibbons has yet to make a decision official.
May 14 2014Stroman was roughed up for the second straight outing Wednesday, surrendering five runs on five hits while facing 10 batters in 1.1 innings against the Indians.Oh dear. The hype surrounding the rookie's sensational Triple-A campaign has all but vanished, as he's now been blasted for nine runs on 11 hits in just three innings over his last two appearances. Of course, the 5-foot-9 youngster is still getting acclimated to big league hitters, but his struggles certainly don't help his chances to be spotted a starting assignment by manager John Gibbons. In terms of a silver lining, at least all five of his outs came on ground balls in this one, indicating that he's still able to keep the ball down in the zone while under pressure.
May 11 2014Stroman was torched for four runs on six hits over 1.2 innings in relief Sunday against the Angels.Hold the phone on the talk of Stroman moving to the rotation quite so soon, as the young right-hander gave up a lot of hard contact in this one, yielding extra-base hits to Mike Trout, Ian Stewart and Hank Conger. The three-run homer Stroman allowed to Conger was responsible for the bulk of the damage, reiterating some of the criticisms about the pitcher's proneness to the long ball. Stroman's arsenal of pitches is still diverse enough to allow him to find success as a big league starter despite his diminutive frame, but those hopes may not materialize in his rookie season.
May 6 2014Stroman grabbed his first career MLB win Tuesday, tossing one-and-a-third innings of one-hit, shutout relief against the Phillies.Stroman has gotten his feet wet quickly in the bigs, making appearances in his first two games with the Blue Birds. His nerves showed while being granted ninth-inning duties during a tie, missing his spot for a wild pitch after allowing a single to Cody Asche. However, the most encouraging sign for the Jays and prospective fantasy owners was that three of his outs came on ground-outs while the fourth came on a strikeout, indicating that he's able to keep the ball down -- and in the yard -- against big league hitters, at least on this night.
May 4 2014Stroman made his big-league debut less than 24 hours after being called up Sunday, giving up a triple, one earned run, and hitting a batter in two-thirds of an inning against the Pirates. It's been quite the whirlwind week for the youngster, who celebrated his 23rd birthday two days after tossing a six-inning, no-hit gem Tuesday at Triple-A Buffalo. Stroman has been lights out as a starter for the Bisons this year, fanning 38 batters while earning a pristine 1.69 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 26.2 innings, but he kicked off his MLB career in relief, as the Jays' bullpen is currently in disarray. He actually spent some time as the closer for Duke in his collegiate days, so pitching as a reliever won't be completely foreign to him. Go ahead and add Stroman to your watch list, as it's widely believed that the Jays will eventually grant him a start if his performance in the pen warrants it.
May 3 2014With Brandon Morrow headed to the disabled list according to Sportsnet's Barry Davis, Stroman could soon join the Blue Jays' rotation.Stroman's had his starts lined up so that he could potentially usurp Dustin McGowan, but the Jays now need to replace a different pitcher. Stroman is the obvious choice to fill in, but with the Jays previously planning to use a six-man rotation for the next few turns, the team could just decide to use a normal five-man rotation instead. Given his strong minor league track record and complete dominance of Triple-A hitters this season, Stroman appears to be a better win-now rotation option than both J.A. Happ and Dustin McGowan.
May 3 2014In the wake of Brandon Morrow (finger) having suffered a worse injury than originally expected, Stroman has been called up to take his spot on the Jays' 40-man roster, Barry Davis of Sportsnet reports.Stroman -- who has been mowing down opposing batters at Triple-A Buffalo with 38 strikeouts, a 1.69 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through just under 27 innings this season -- will pitch out of the Jays' bullpen to start. It was a roller coaster day for the former Duke Blue Devil, who found out Saturday afternoon that Triple-A teammate Chad Jenkins was surprisingly recalled ahead of him when Morrow was moved to the 7-day DL. At any rate, Stroman had never pitched at a higher level than Double-A before this season, so it will be very interesting to see what he can do with the big club. If all goes well and he can string together some quality outings in the pen, it's plausible that he could garner some serious consideration for a shot at a starting gig with the Jays.
May 3 2014Stroman will not be called up to join the rotation in the wake of Brandon Morrow's finger injury, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports. The Blue Jays will instead revise their pre-existing plan to go with a six-man rotation, cutting down to the typical five. It's a disappointing development for Stroman's owners, but the talented right-hander is still lurking over Dustin McGowan's shoulder. Between the Jays' rotation problems and Stroman's dominance of Triple-A batters, it may not be much longer before the 23-year-old arrives. If it were strictly a matter of winning games right now, he'd probably have been called up a few weeks ago.
Apr 30 2014Stroman tossed six no-hit innings Tuesday with 10 strikeouts and just one walk for Triple-A Buffalo. He remains an option to be called upon later in the week to replace, most likely, Dustin McGowan in the Blue Jays' rotation. The two pitchers have their start dates synced up so that McGowan can be bounced from the Jays' rotation at any moment. McGowan gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks in six innings Tuesday against the Royals, which is a significant improvement over his other recent outings. If he were to get the call, Stroman would instantly become a more desirable pitcher to own from a fantasy perspective than McGowan currently is. The 5-foot-9 righty, who turns 23 on Thursday, offers three plus pitches, a fastball, cutter and slider, while also featuring a change-up which could develop into a plus pitch down the road. Through 26.2 innings in Triple-A this season, Stroman has a 1.69 ERA with an elite 12.2 K/9 rate.
Apr 26 2014Stroman has had his next start moved so that it aligns with Dustin McGowan's next start, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports.Stroman has been one of the names mentioned as a possible replacement for the struggling McGowan in the Blue Jays' rotation. This move adds credence to that speculation. If McGowan struggles in his next start, Stroman would seem to be his likely replacement.
Apr 25 2014Stroman remains a candidate to be called up at any moment to jump into the big-league rotation, the National Post's John Lott reports.A six-man rotation has been discussed in Toronto, and even if that doesn't come to fruition, an injury or ineffectiveness could lead to Stroman replacing one of the Blue Jays' current starters at some point. Despite his short stature, Stroman was considered by some as equal to, or even superior to, Aaron Sanchez as a pitching prospect this offseason. If he does get the call at some point, he's worth a speculative add in most mid-sized formats.
Apr 2 2014Stroman will start the season in Triple-A Buffalo.Stroman entered spring with a chance to crack the Opening Day roster, but a 13.09 ERA in exhibition ended that possibility. With a strong performance in the minors, Stroman will have a shot to get called up later in the season.
Mar 19 2014The Blue Jays assigned Romero to minor league camp Wednesday.Stroman entered camp as a candidate for a spot in the Blue Jays' rotation, but he showed he still needs more seasoning in the minors by giving up 15 earned runs in 9.1 total innings this spring. Stroman shined at the Double-A level last season, but it remains to be seen if he will open the season there, or get his first taste of Triple-A action.
Mar 19 2014The Blue Jays assigned Stroman to minor league camp Wednesday.Stroman entered camp as a candidate for a spot in the Blue Jays' rotation, but he showed he still needs more seasoning in the minors by giving up 15 earned runs in 9.1 total innings this spring. Jan 10 2014Stroman is in the mix as a rotation candidate for the Jays this spring, Sportsnet reports. After serving a 50-game suspension to begin the 2013 campaign, Stroman pitched very well over 20 starts (111.2 innings) at Double-A New Hampshire, piling up 129 strikeouts against 27 walks. He had some issues keeping the ball in the park, which could become problematic in Toronto given the hitter-friendly tendencies of Rogers Centre. Nevertheless, Stroman will make a case to open the season in the big leagues, with Triple-A Buffalo serving as his landing spot if he falls short coming out of spring training.
Jul 15 2013Stroman has a 3.23 ERA and 63:14 K:BB ratio through 11 starts (55.2 innings) for Double-A New Hampshire.Stroman's third outing of the season was a complete disaster, and if you throw that one out he'd have a 2.14 ERA. Things have been ugly in the Toronto starting rotation this season, but at least the organization can take some comfort in knowing that both Stroman and fellow top prospect Aaron Sanchez are thriving in the minors. Outside of an emergency situation, we wouldn't expect either pitcher to be an option for the big league club before the end of the 2013 season.
Mar 30 2013Stroman opened eyes in Blue Jays camp after making his Grapefruit League debut this week, Sportsnet reports.Although he still has 42 games remaining on his 50-game suspension from last season, Stroman could factor into the Jays' late-inning plans before the end of 2013. As a first-round pick last June, part of the appeal in taking the right-handed reliever that high was that he's likely on the cusp of being ready to pitch in the big leagues.
