Jun 23 2024Gonzales (forearm) will throw live batting practice at Double-A Altoona on Wednesday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After throwing a handful of bullpen sessions since the beginning of June, Gonzales will now go up against live minor-league hitters as the next step in his rehab process. Assuming all goes well Wednesday, the 32-year-old lefty will likely begin playing in rehab games with Altoona shortly afterward.
Jun 19 2024Gonzales (forearm) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales has been on the injured list since mid-April but has slowly ramped up his activity. Tuesday marked his third bullpen session, and the next step in his return will be live batting practice Friday.
Jun 13 2024Gonzales (forearm) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Wednesday's session marked Gonzales' first time throwing off a slope since hitting the injured list. He's expected to continue to ramp up with side sessions before heading out on what will presumably be a lengthy rehab assignment.
Jun 3 2024Gonzales (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Monday, per MLB's transaction log. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales hasn't been cleared to resume throwing, so this move won't impact his return date. Instead, it clears up a spot on the 40-man roster for the activation of Jason Delay (knee) from the 60-day injured list, and he was then optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
May 20 2024Gonzales (forearm) will be assessed later in May to determine when he can resume throwing, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales has been sidelined since mid-April but is expected to avoid surgery. He's experienced several consecutive symptom-free days, so he could be cleared to resume throwing by the close of the month. Even so, Gonzales is likely to be sidelined until at least mid-July.
May 6 2024General manager Ben Cherington said he expects Gonzales (forearm) to pitch again this season, MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales received a second opinion during the final week of April. The Pirates haven't disclosed the exact diagnosis, but Cherington said "conservative treatment" is currently the right path for Gonzales. He has yet to begin throwing and will likely be sidelined for at least the first half of the campaign.
May 1 2024The Pirates hope to have answers about Gonzales's (elbow) status "sooner rather than later," MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: There has been very little information available about Gonzales's status since he landed on the injured list April 14. He has consulted with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who ordered Gonzales to undergo additional testing. It appears that the results of the imaging are still unknown, but that information should eventually provide a clearer timeline for Gonzales's return to the mound.
Apr 19 2024Gonzales (forearm) will remain shut down for the next couple weeks, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales has been sidelined since last week with a left forearm muscle strain. He is not expected to require surgery, but between shut down for multiple weeks and then a build-up period, it sounds like it will be several weeks before he'll be an option for the Pirates again.
Apr 14 2024The Pirates placed Gonzales on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm muscle strain, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was able to turn in his second straight quality start in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies, but he evidently was pitching with an arm injury at some point during that outing and will now be shut down for at least the next two and a half weeks. The Pirates recalled Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Gonzales' spot on the active roster and provide a heathy arm out of the bullpen in the short term, but the focus now turns to whom Pittsburgh will tab as the veteran lefty's replacement in the rotation. Top prospect Paul Skenes turned in a dominant 3.1-inning start with Indianapolis on Friday and would line up for Gonzales' spot in the rotation, if the Pirates feel ready to bring the 21-year-old to the majors. Quinn Priester also pitched Saturday for Indianapolis and, unlike Skenes, already has a spot on the 40-man roster, so he could represent another potential Gonzales replacement.
Apr 7 2024Gonzales did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed two runs to cross in the fourth inning but otherwise kept things clean, earning a quality start in his second start with the Pirates. He left with a one-run deficit, but a late comeback salvaged a win for the Bucs and took Gonzales off the hook for what would have been a tough-luck defeat. Gonzales, whom the Pirates traded for in the offseason from Seattle, needed just 77 pitches to complete six innings and has now allowed just three runs over 11 innings in his two outings with Pittsburgh.
Apr 1 2024Gonzales did not factor into the decision Monday against the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales drew an easy assignment in his Pirates debut Monday facing the Nationals and made the most of it. The 32-year-old turned back the clock as he averaged 90.2-mph on his fastball, up 1.2-mph from last year. The last full season in which Gonzales averaged above 90-mph on his fastball was in 2018. However, he remains useful in only the deepest of fantasy leagues at the moment. The Pittsburgh lefty is tentatively scheduled to face the venerable Orioles offense on the road in his next start.
Mar 31 2024Gonzales is listed as the Pirates' probable starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Nationals. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: With 155 career MLB starts to his name, Gonzales has experience working in his favor as he begins his first campaign in Pittsburgh, but he could be at risk of losing his spot later in the season if top prospect Paul Skenes and promising 23-year-old righty Quinn Priester are summoned to the big leagues. For now, he'll be entrusted to eat innings for the Pirates, but the soft-tossing Gonzales isn't especially appealing for fantasy purposes. Never a high-volume strikeout pitcher, Gonzales is difficult to depend on as an ERA and WHIP stabilizer coming off a season in Seattle in which he ranked in the bottom seven percent of the league with a .288 expected batting average, per Statcast.
Feb 18 2024Gonzales (forearm) is healthy to begin spring training, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales managed only 10 starts and 50 innings in 2023 before undergoing surgery to address a forearm issue. He was then traded twice this offseason but figures to settle into being either the second or third starting pitcher in Pittsburgh behind Mitch Keller and potentially Martin Perez. In addition to his rehab, Gonzales also went to Driveline during the offseason to work on regaining the feel on his cutter while attempting to pick up some added velocity.
Dec 5 2023Atlanta traded Gonzales (forearm) and cash to Pittsburgh on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was sent from Seattle to Atlanta as part of the Jarred Kelenic deal, but his time in Atlanta will last just 48 hours. Gonzales logged a 5.22 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 50 innings across 10 starts last season, but his season was cut short by a forearm injury in May, and he underwent surgery to address the issue in August. Gonzales is expected to be ready for spring training, where he will compete for a spot in the back of Pittsburgh's rotation.
Dec 4 2023Atlanta is expected to flip Gonzales (forearm) to a new team in another trade, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was acquired from the Mariners on Sunday as part of the Jarred Kelenic trade, but it appears his stay in Atlanta will be a brief one. It is not yet known which club will be acquiring the left-hander, but it sounds like Atlanta already has something in the works. Gonzales posted a 5.22 ERA over just 10 starts in 2023 before requiring season-ending surgery in mid-August to address a nerve issue in his left forearm. He is expected to be healthy for spring training.
Dec 3 2023Gonzales (forearm) was traded from Seattle to Atlanta on Sunday along with Jarred Kelenic and Evan White in exchange for Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales had been pretty durable early in his career, but he was limited to 10 starts last season and ended up needing season-ending surgery in mid-August to address a nerve issue in his left forearm. He is expected to have a normal offseason, but his 5.22 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 2023 were easily his worst marks since 2017. Gonzales is owed $7.5 million for the 2024 season, and he could be part of a competition for the final couple spots in Atlanta's rotation.
Aug 25 2023Gonzales is expected to have a normal offseason after recently undergoing surgery for a nerve issue in his left forearm, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales had already been ruled out for the season, but it sounds like he should enter the offseason without any restrictions. The left-hander is set to earn $12.25 million in 2024 and the Mariners have a $15 million option on him for 2025. Gonzales was limited to just 10 starts in 2023 before getting hurt, posting a 5.22 ERA.
Aug 13 2023Gonzales will undergo season-ending surgery on his left forearm, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was initially placed on the injured list in June with a flexor strain in his left forearm and was later shut down from a throwing program due to a nerve issue in his elbow. He had hoped to avoid surgery, but undergoing the procedure will give him the best chance to be ready for the start of the 2024 season. The 31-year-old southpaw will conclude 2023 with a 5.22 ERA and 1.46 WHIP alongside a 34:18 K:BB across 50 innings in 10 starts.
Aug 10 2023GM Justin Hollander said Tuesday that Gonzales (forearm), who was recently transferred to the 60-day injured list, is running out of time to pitch again in 2023, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Per Hollander, the nerve issue that led to Gonzales' initial placement on the IL back on June 3 persists, and that's preventing the left-hander from beginning any type of ramp-up activity. Hollander remarked "the clock is ticking on that" when asked about Gonzales' chances of returning this season, noting the veteran would need an extensive amount of time to build his arm strength back up once he's finally cleared to begin a throwing program.
Jul 26 2023The Mariners transferred Gonzales (forearm) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was initially placed on the 15-day IL on June 3 and hasn't even begun a rehab assignment yet, so he was already expected to miss more than 60 days before the Mariners made the transaction Wednesday. The move allowed the Mariners to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Trent Thornton, whom Seattle acquired via trade from Toronto.
Jul 15 2023Gonzales (elbow) said upon his return from the All-Star break that his progress from a left flexor strain has been good, but he didn't elaborate any further, the team's official site reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander has been on the shelf since June 3 and was shut down from all activity for two weeks after meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on June 26 in Los Angeles. There's no indication yet that Gonzales is inching closer to a throwing program, and he'll be in store for a lengthy rehab assignment whenever he does progress to that stage of his recovery.
Jun 27 2023Gonzales has been shut down for two weeks because of nerve issues in his elbow, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales resumed throwing earlier this month, but he's hit another snag and can probably be ruled out through at least the end of July. The left-hander originally landed on the injured list June 3 due to a forearm flexor strain.
Jun 13 2023Gonzales (forearm) will play catch for the third day in a row Tuesday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: "Very light, like nothing, no tension," Gonzales said. "So I'm not really putting a timeline on it. I'm day by day, obviously. I just want to take this slow because I don't want this to be something that lingers for sure." Gonzales will take a break from catch Wednesday before determining the next step in his rehab. He's working his way back from a flexor strain and there is no timetable for his return.
Jun 6 2023MRI results revealed a flexor strain in Gonzales' left forearm, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The good news is that there doesn't seem to be any damage done to Gonzales' UCL, but he will still be shut down from throwing for another 7-to-10 days. If all goes well during his rehab process, the 31-year-old lefty should be able to return right before the All-Star break.
Jun 3 2023Gonzales was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left forearm strain. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales felt discomfort in his forearm following his last start May 28 against the Pirates and testing has since revealed a strain. Bryan Woo is up from Double-A Arkansas to fill the vacant spot in the Mariners' starting rotation, beginning with his MLB debut Saturday versus the Rangers. There's no timetable yet on Gonzales, but this type of injury usually requires more than just a couple weeks of rest and rehab.
Jun 2 2023Gonzales will undergo testing on his forearm and have his start skipped Saturday versus the Rangers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales felt some discomfort in his left forearm after his outing Sunday against the Pirates and will now reportedly be replaced on the mound Saturday by Bryan Woo, who's set to be called up from Double-A Arkansas for the start. Once the results of the testing on his forearm come to fruition, it's possible that Gonzales could be set for a stint on the injured list.
May 28 2023Gonzales yielded one run on three hits and four walks over 5.1 innings in Sunday's win over the Pirates. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales rolled through four scoreless frames before the Pirates finally put a run on the board in the fifth inning. He's given up three runs over his last two starts after getting crushed for eight runs against Boston on May 17. The 31-year-old southpaw dropped his ERA to 5.22 with a 34:18 K:BB across 50 innings. Gonzales recorded a 5.68 ERA with just 15 punchouts in five May starts. His next start is projected to be a road matchup with the Rangers.
May 23 2023Gonzales (4-1) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was coming off of an ugly start last Wednesday versus Boston, in which he allowed eight runs in just 1.2 innings. He had trouble in the opening frame Tuesday as well, but then settled in and got some run support to get back in the win column. Gonzales now has a 5.68 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 30:15 K:BB through 44.1 innings across nine starts this season. He's still tough to trust in fantasy as a low-strikeout starter, especially since his walk rate 3.0 BB/9 is his highest since he became a major-league regular in 2018. The southpaw is lined up for a home start versus the Pirates this weekend.
May 17 2023Gonzales (3-1) took the loss against Boston on Wednesday, allowing eight runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 1.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales fell behind 3-0 after one frame, and things got even worse for him in the second. In that inning, five Red Sox batters reached base, and all came around to score (including two after the lefty hurler was pulled for a reliever). Gonzales had racked up two straight quality starts coming into Wednesday, though he had another blow-up prior to that stretch, yielding eight runs (five earned) in three innings against Toronto on April 30. The loss against Boston was Gonzales' first of the season, but his overall numbers have not been pretty, as he's posted a 6.10 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through 38.1 frames.
May 13 2023Gonzales (3-0) earned the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over six innings during a 9-2 win over Detroit. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales got plenty of early run support and cruised through four scoreless frames before surrendering a two-run home run to Jake Rogers in the fifth. The long ball was the lone blemish on the night for the left-hander, who notched his second straight quality start and third of the season. He has allowed a homer in four of his first seven appearances this year and sports a 4.41 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 25:12 K:BB through 36.2 innings. While the numbers don't jump off the page, Gonzales continues to be a steady piece of Seattle's rotation to start the campaign and has gotten the job done more often than not.
May 6 2023Gonzales allowed three runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales has had only one truly awful outing this season, and that was last Sunday versus the Blue Jays. He looked to be in line for his first loss of the season Saturday before the Mariners rallied for seven runs in the eighth inning. The soft-throwing southpaw now has a 4.70 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 23:11 K:BB through 30.2 innings across six starts. He's projected for a road start in Detroit next week.
Apr 30 2023Gonzales did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits and one walk over three innings during a 10-8 win over the Blue Jays in extras. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was spotted a four-run lead in the top of the first, but he surrendered multiple runs in each of his three frames and was in line for the loss before Seattle made a late-inning comeback. The left-hander had been solid over his previous three starts after a shaky opening to the campaign, but Sunday's performance was his worst outing thus far and lowered his ERA from 3.32 to 4.74. Things don't get easier for Gonzales, whose next start is scheduled during a three-game set with the Astros.
Apr 2 2023Gonzales did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over five innings in a loss to the Guardians. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales made just three spring starts this year and didn't toss more than 48 pitches in any of those outings. While the southpaw wasn't particularly sharp during his regular-season debut Sunday, he threw 69 pitches against the Guardians, an encouraging mark given his limited Cactus League work. He projects for a rematch against the Guardians on the road Saturday.
Mar 3 2023Gonzales recorded the win in Friday's Cactus League victory over the Diamondbacks, firing 3.2 scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and two walks while recording three strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales pounded 33 of his 48 offerings in for strikes while working on what would be the sixth pitch in his arsenal, a slider. Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports catcher Tom Murphy came away particularly impressed with Gonzales' performance overall after the left-hander was bounced around for four earned runs on five hits over two innings by the Angels in his first Cactus League start. "I saw a great adjustment," said Murphy. "I felt his fastball command wasn't usual Marco today, then he just came out and just started pounding his breaking ball. for him to do that mid game, that's why Marco is so good at going seven innings."
Oct 7 2022Gonzales will begin the Mariners' AL Wild Card Series versus the Blue Jays as a member of the taxi squad. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales will be ineligible to pitch in the series unless he gets added to the active roster. The 30-year-old wrapped up the 2022 campaign with a 4.13 ERA and 1.33 WHIP and will provide the Mariners with an additional depth option at their disposal.
Oct 6 2022Gonzales did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks over seven innings against the Tigers. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed all four runs on RBI singles, though one of the two runs that scored on Jeimer Candelario's fourth-inning knock did so because of a throwing error. The lefty did not impress during his final 15 starts of the season, recording a 5.08 ERA over 88.2 innings. The 30-year-old's 4.13 ERA and 1.33 WHIP during 2022 were his worst marks in five seasons as a full-time member of Seattle's rotation.
Oct 4 2022Gonzales is starting Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was unclear who would get the ball for the final game of the regular season, but the Mariners will save Logan Gilbert for the playoffs. Gonzales has a 4.91 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 18 strikeouts in 29.1 innings over his last five starts.
Sep 29 2022Gonzales allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales gave up loud contact in the third inning, as Sam Huff, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia all tagged him for home runs. This was the third time in five September starts Gonzales has yielded multiple homers. He didn't pick up a win this month and saw his ERA rise from 3.99 to 4.14 for the year. He's added a 98:48 K:BB and 1.33 WHIP through 176 innings spanning 31 starts. Gonzales is projected for one more regular-season start, a favorable matchup versus the Tigers, but it's unclear if he'll work as a starter in the playoffs.
Sep 24 2022Gonzales (10-15) gave up three earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings to take the loss in a 5-1 defeat against the Royals on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales chalked up an unremarkable performance, which led to his 15th loss of the season and raised his ERA to 4.05. He has now given up eight earned runs over his last two appearances after stringing together four quality starts in a row. The main problem with Gonzales is that his stuff simply isn't good enough to miss many bats. The 30-year-old left-hander has 94 strikeouts in 171 innings pitched this season. He is tentatively expected to take his next turn in the rotation in an appearance against the Rangers.
Sep 18 2022Gonzales (10-14) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four in 6.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was undone by the long ball -- he gave up two home runs to Luis Rengifo and one to Livan Soto. This was the second time in three starts Gonzales has given up multiple homers, though it's just the seventh time he's done that in 29 starts for the year. The poor start ticked his ERA up to 4.01 with a 1.32 WHIP and 92:47 K:BB through 166 innings this season. The 30-year-old southpaw is lined up for a favorable road start in Kansas City next weekend.
Sep 11 2022Gonzales didn't factor into the decision during Sunday's 8-7 win against the Braves, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts in six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales limited Atlanta's potent offense to an Austin Riley solo shot in the third inning and departed in line for his fourth win in five turns with a 6-1 lead. The typically solid Seattle bullpen would go on to surrender six combined runs in the eighth and ninth to eliminate Gonzales from the ledger despite his second-best game score of the campaign at 69. During his last five starts, the 30-year-old has permitted only nine runs and 28 baserunners in 30.1 innings to drop his ERA from 4.18 to 3.89. Gonzales is projected to take the mound again next weekend against the Angels.
Sep 5 2022Gonzales (10-13) was tagged with the loss against the White Sox on Monday, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales limited Chicago to four hits, though two of those were home runs. He finished with his third straight quality start but nonetheless had his three-game winning streak snapped. Gonzales' 13 losses are tied for second-most in the majors. However, he also has 10 wins, making him one of two big-league pitchers (along with Miles Mikolas) to reach double figures in both wins and losses so far this season.
Aug 31 2022Gonzales (10-12) earned the win after he tossed six innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one versus the Tigers on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales gave up two runs in the bottom of the second after allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base in the inning. He later surrendered another run in the bottom of sixth on a Jeimer Candelario RBI single. Gonzales has now produced three strong starts in a row after he gave up five runs against the Rangers on Aug. 13, compiling a 2.76 ERA over those outings.
Aug 25 2022Gonzales (9-12) allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out four across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Guardians. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed his lone earned run of the game in the first inning, and he allowed only one hit across his final five frames of work. Due to his contact-heavy approach, Gonzales will continue to get inconsistent results, though he has now allowed through or fewer earned in three of his last four outings. For the season, he owns a 3.97 ERA and a 79:43 K:BB across 140.2 frames.
Aug 20 2022Gonzales (8-12) gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out one over 5.1 innings to earn the win in a 10-2 victory over the Athletics on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales took advantage of a favorable matchup against the weak Athletics lineup to churn out his eighth win of the season despite only striking out one batter. The soft-tossing lefty got plenty of run support and pitched to contact before coming out of the game at 79 pitches. The positive start lowered his ERA to 4.08 after a rough ride his last time out against the Rangers. Gonzales has an elevated 1.41 WHIP and has struck out only 75 batters in 134.2 innings this season. He is tentatively expected to make his next start against the Guardians.
Aug 14 2022Gonzales gave up five earned runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings in a 7-4 loss to the Rangers on Saturday. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Rangers lineup got to Gonzales in the fourth inning with a barrage of hits to put four runs on the board. Corey Seager followed it up with a solo shot the next inning. Gonzales simply doesn't have the stuff to give major-league hitters much strikeout trouble, and he only managed six swinging strikes on 72 pitches. The soft-throwing lefty saw his WHIP jump to 1.42 with the performance and has a K/BB of 1.9 on the season. He is tentatively expected to make his next start in a favorable matchup at Oakland.
Aug 7 2022Gonzales (7-11) allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven to earn the win Sunday over the Angels. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The seven strikeouts were a season high for Gonzales, who also turned in his fourth quality start in his last seven outings. David Fletcher was the only Angel to find success against him, posting a two-out double and an RBI groundout. Gonzales still has a 3.98 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 72:40 K:BB across 124.1 innings through 22 starts -- given his pitch-to-contact tendencies, his 2.9 BB/9 rate has led to some crooked numbers at times. The southpaw is tentatively projected for a road start versus the Rangers next weekend.
Aug 1 2022Gonzales (6-11) took the loss against the Yankees on Monday, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out five batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales fell behind early in the contest, surrendering a three-run home run to Anthony Rizzo in the first inning. He gave up a two-run shot to Aaron Judge in the second and a solo homer to Jose Trevino in the fourth, and all six of the runs against him came via the long ball. This was the third time in Gonzales' past four outings that he's give up at least five runs, and his season ERA has risen from 3.24 to 3.95 as a result of the poor stretch.
Jul 27 2022Gonzales (6-10) allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out five across seven innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed a run in two of his final three innings but still managed to turn in an excellent start. It was a needed effort, as he entered the outing having allowed 10 earned runs on 20 hits across his last 11.2 frames. Gonzales owns only a 4.8 K/9 on the season, so his results are likely to remain inconsistent. Overall, he has maintained a 3.66 ERA and a 60:36 K:BB.
Jul 22 2022Gonzales (5-10) took the loss Friday versus the Astros, allowed five runs on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was responsible for solo shots by Jose Altuve, Yordan Alvarez and Martin Maldonado. Prior to the All-Star break, Gonzales hadn't given up a home run in his last three starts, but Friday marked the fourth straight start where he's allowed at least eight hits. The contact-heavy style is beginning to catch up with the southpaw, who now has a 3.74 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 55:35 K:BB across 106 innings through 19 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the Rangers next week.
Jul 14 2022Gonzales allowed five runs on 11 hits and two walks with four strikeouts across six innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales saw his streak of quality starts end at five, as the Rangers tagged him for four runs in the first two innings. He was able to settle in after that, and the Mariners' offense got him off the hook by rallying for the lead in the eighth. The southpaw has given up 39 hits over his last 31.2 innings, but he's been effective at minimizing damage by allowing 14 runs (13 earned) in that span. Gonzales ended the first half of the season with a 3.50 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 53:34 K:BB in 100.1 innings overall.
Jul 7 2022Gonzales (5-9) earned the win over Toronto on Thursday, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over 6.2 innings. He did not walk or strike out any batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales surrendered an unearned run in the second inning and two earned runs in the fifth, but he allowed only one extra-base hit (a double) and made it through 6.2 frames on an efficient 88 pitches. Contact was the name of the game for the southpaw in the win -- he notched only two swinging strikes and didn't produce any punchouts for the first time this season. Per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, Gonzales became the first Seattle pitcher in over a decade to toss a quality start without a walk or a strikeout. The veteran's lack of punchouts (he has just 49 over 94.1 innings on the season) is a detriment in fantasy, but he's nonetheless been a useful starter with seven quality starts over his past eight appearances.
Jul 1 2022Gonzales (4-9) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales pitched fairly well in his fourth straight quality start, but the Mariners' bats couldn't give him much help. The southpaw gave up RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings. This was the second time in eight starts he was able to keep the ball in the yard. Gonzales owns a 3.29 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 49:32 K:BB across 87.2 innings in 16 starts. He's projected for a home start versus the Blue Jays next week.
Jun 26 2022Gonzales (4-8) took the loss Sunday versus the Angels. He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five in six-plus innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales got through six innings unscathed, but he allowed a solo home run to Luis Rengifo to lead off the seventh. Monte Harrison then drew a walk, and Andres Munoz would later give up an RBI single for the decisive run in the contest, which went on Gonzales' line. Despite the late fade, this was the fourth straight start in which the southpaw limited the opposition to two or fewer runs. He's maintained a steady 3.31 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 47:31 K:BB across 81.2 innings in 15 starts overall. The 30-year-old is projected to start at home against the Athletics next week in a favorable matchup.
Jun 21 2022Gonzales (4-7) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two in seven innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales received ample support from the Mariners' offense, which provided four home runs. The southpaw's one mistake was a two-run homer to Nick Allen in the seventh inning. With quality starts in six of his last eight outings, Gonzales has provided steady pitching for the Mariners. He has a 3.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 42:27 K:BB across 75.2 innings overall. He's projected for a road start versus the Angels this weekend.
Jun 16 2022Gonzales (3-7) took the loss Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against Minnesota. He struck out two. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was sharp from the start and got through six innings unscathed, facing just two more batters than the minimum. However, the left-hander got in trouble in the seventh after allowing back-to-back hitters to reach with one out. Gonzalez got the next batter -- Jose Miranda -- to ground into a forceout before being replaced by Paul Sewald, who gave up an RBI single to Ryan Jeffers before getting Max Kepler to end the inning on a groundout. Across 13 starts and 68.2 innings, Gonzales sports a 3.41 ERA with a 40:26 K:BB. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's matchup in Oakland, when he'll look for his first win since May 23.
Jun 10 2022Gonzales allowed two runs on two hits and six walks while striking out four in 4.1 innings versus the Red Sox on Friday. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales' lack of command led to him leaving with the Mariners down 2-0, though Jesse Winker's two-run blast in the fifth inning got the starter off the hook. This was the first time in four starts Gonzales has issued multiple walks, which makes this seem like more of an anomaly than the start of a troubling trend. The southpaw has a 3.63 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 38:24 K:BB through 62 innings across 12 starts this season. He'll look to improve on a 3-6 record next week in a projected start versus the Twins.
Jun 4 2022Gonzales (3-6) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts in seven innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Rangers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed three baserunners in the fourth inning, which culminated in an Adolis Garcia three-run home run. The Mariners got two runs back in the fifth, but they couldn't get Gonzales off the hook as he took his second straight loss despite another quality start. The southpaw now has a 3.59 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 34:18 K:BB across 57.2 innings in 11 starts. He's projected to face the Red Sox at home next week.
May 29 2022Gonzales (3-5) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 7.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Astros. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales gave up a second-inning solo shot to Jeremy Pena. He also allowed a ground rule double to Martin Maldonado in the eighth, and Paul Sewald allowed the inherited runner to score the game-deciding run. This was Gonzales' longest start of the season and one of his best -- he's faced the Astros three times this year and turned in a quality start each time. Overall, the 30-year-old southpaw has a 3.55 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 29:17 K:BB in 50.2 innings across 10 starts. He lines up to face the Rangers on the road next weekend.
May 23 2022Gonzales (3-4) snatched a win Monday after he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out three against the Athletics. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was not sharp in Monday's outing, giving up three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. The eight hits he surrendered matched a season-high while he also allowed his ninth homer of the year in the fourth frame off the bat of Chad Pinder. Nonetheless, Gonzales outdueled the Athletics' starter Zach Logue who gave up seven runs over 4.2 frames. Prior to Monday, the 30-year-old had given up three or fewer runs in all eight of his starts, so the rough outing only raised his season-long ERA from 3.08 to a still respectable 3.74 over 43.1 innings.
May 18 2022Gonzales (2-4) picked up the win against Toronto on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two batters. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was far from dominant in the outing, as he induced only four swinging strikes and tallied just two punchouts. However, the left-hander allowed only one extra-base hit and limited Toronto to just a third-inning run. Gonzales has finished with a quality start in three of his past four outings to lower his season ERA to 3.08. He's expected to make his next start at home against Oakland on Monday.
May 14 2022Gonzales didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 2-1 win over the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw wasn't dominant, but he held the Mets in check over 103 pitches (66 strikes) and dueled Max Scherzer to a draw before Seattle was able to push across the winning run in the eighth inning. Gonzales has three quality starts through seven outings, but his 3.38 ERA masks a 6.31 FIP, 1.53 WHIP and poor 22:13 K:BB through 32 innings.
May 8 2022Gonzales (1-4) took the loss during Saturday's 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Rays, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks with one strikeout in 5.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Other than an Adam Frazier error that allowed a run to score in the third inning, Gonzales was able to limit the damage to a pair of Brandon Lowe solo home runs. The 30-year-old's 3.91 ERA is in line with career averages, but his 1.62 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9 and 6.0 K/9 are in line to be career worsts with Seattle. Additionally, the Mariners are averaging just two runs of support in Gonzales' four losses compared to a 4.14 average for the season. He'll look to get back in the win column with a projected start coming against the Mets next weekend.
May 3 2022Gonzales (1-3) took the loss against Houston on Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was hit on his left wrist by a comebacker in his previous start and wasn't certain to be available Monday, but he ended up making the start and navigating through six frames. He allowed plenty of traffic on the bases but still managed to notch his second quality start, with all three runs against him coming by way of the long ball. The southpaw has struggled somewhat this season, though his ERA stands at a respectable 4.05 since eight of the 17 runs scored against him have been unearned. He's expected to next take the mound at home against Tampa Bay this weekend.
May 2 2022Gonzales (wrist) will make his scheduled start Monday against the Astros in Houston. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw's previous start April 27 in Tampa Bay lasted less than an inning after he was struck in the left wrist with a comebacker, but he was fortunate to avoid any structural damage and escaped with a bruise. Gonzales was able to complete his between-starts bullpen session Friday without incident, so he shouldn't face any strict limitations with his workload as he takes the hill for the fifth time this season. He turned in a 3.86 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 14:4 K:BB across 14 innings over his first four outings.
Apr 21 2022Gonzales did not factor in the decision against Texas on Thursday, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out six. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle staked Gonzales to a first-inning five-run lead, but he gave a pair of those runs back in the second frame before getting through the third and fourth unscathed. Things fell apart for the left-hander in the fifth, however, when his infield committed three errors behind him. Gonzales had a chance to get out of the mess allowing just one run, but he gave up three straight two-out extra-base hits -- including a two-run homer off the bat of Nick Solak -- to be chased from the contest. His fantasy managers will be comforted by the fact that just two of the six runs he yielded were unearned, and he also managed six strikeouts in the outing. Gonzales' next start is tentatively scheduled to come Wednesday in Tampa Bay.
Apr 16 2022Gonzales (1-1) picked up the win in Friday's 11-1 victory over Houston, allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales held a formidable Houston lineup scoreless through six innings until surrendering a lone run in the seventh on two hits. It was an excellent rebound from permitting six runs in two innings last Sunday, as the 30-year-old surrendered half as many baserunners in five more innings pitched. He lines up to toe the rubber next against Texas on Thursday.
Apr 11 2022Gonzales (0-1) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Twins after allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while fanning one across two innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales didn't have major command issues as 36 of his 61 pitches went for strikes, but he served up three homers in just two innings and just couldn't continue on the mound past the first two frames. This wasn't the debut that the Mariners or the southpaw were expecting, as Gonzales has posted an ERA below the 4.00 mark in each of his last three seasons. He will try to bounce back when he pitches again -- he's tabbed to start against the Astros on April 15.
Apr 5 2022Gonzales allowed two earned runs on four hits over six innings while recording five strikeouts in a Cactus League win over the Diamondbacks on Monday. He also hit a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander allowed a couple of extra-base hits, including a solo home run to Neyfy Castillo, but he was otherwise in fine form in his final start of Cactus League play. Gonzales will no longer function as the de facto ace of the staff with Robbie Ray in the fold, but he enjoyed a productive spring that included three starts with two or fewer earned runs allowed as well as 12 strikeouts over his last pair of outings.
Mar 26 2022Gonzales fired four scoreless innings during his second Cactus League start Friday against the White Sox, allowing two hits and three walks while recording a strikeout. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander has now logged seven scoreless frames across his first two Cactus League turns, flashing the same consistency that's become his trademark during his last four seasons in Seattle. Gonzales checks in as a clear No. 2 in the rotation in 2022 with Robbie Ray arriving this offseason, but if early returns are any indication, he looks primed for his fourth double-digit win tally in the last five campaigns.
Mar 19 2022Gonzales started Friday's Cactus League loss to the Padres and allowed an unearned run on two hits over three innings. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander could hardly have asked for a better start to spring action, with Gonzales looking like he hadn't missed a beat following another solid season in 2021. The veteran got good work in while facing 12 batters overall and will potentially bump up to at least four innings in his next Cactus League outing at some point in the coming week.
Mar 17 2022Gonzales will draw the start in Friday's Cactus League opener against the Padres and pitch at least two innings, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran left-hander is slated to open the season as the No. 2 starter behind new arrival and projected staff ace Robbie Ray. Gonzales has been about as steady as they come over the last four seasons in Seattle, posting a 46-30 record, 3.88 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 99 starts over that span. Keeping the ball in the park more consistently is perhaps the one major area of Gonzales' game that could use improvement, considering he allowed a career-high 1.8 HR/9 last season across his 143.1 innings.
Oct 2 2021Gonzales (10-6) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Angels after allowing two runs on three hits and two walks across six innings, fanning five. He also hit a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales had to settle with an unfortunate loss due to the lack of run support, but the veteran ended the season on a strong note since he recorded five straight quality starts. The left-hander, who posted a 3.75 ERA since the beginning of September, ends the campaign with a 3.96 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP across 143.1 innings (25 starts), and he's now posted an ERA below the 4.00 threshold in each of his last three seasons, all of them with Seattle.
Sep 26 2021Gonzales (10-5) got the win in Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Angels, allowing one run on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Going for his fourth victory of September, Gonzales limited the damage to a Kurt Suzuki solo home run and went round-for-round with Shohei Ohtani, who posted a similar line. The 29-year-old departed the game with the score knotted at 1-1 and fell in line for the win after Seattle posted four runs in the top of the eighth. Gonzales has now registered four straight quality starts and projects to face the Angels again during the final weekend of the regular season.
Sep 22 2021Gonzales (9-5) allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk while striking out three across six innings in the win over the Athletics on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales surrendered a pair of solo home runs to Matt Olson and Starling Marte. However, he prevented any further damage, and he hasn't lost a start since July 3. In that stretch, he is 8-0 with a 2.72 WHIP and 1.01 ERA in 79.1 innings. The 29-year-old has cashed in eight quality starts in his last 10 outings.
Sep 16 2021Gonzales didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 9-4 extra-inning loss to the Red Sox, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The veteran southpaw continued an impressive run that has seen him reel off seven quality starts in nine outings since the beginning of August. Gonzales has a 5-0 record, 2.37 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 39:10 K:BB through 57 innings over that stretch, but despite his efforts the M's now sit four games back of a wild-card spot in the AL with the A's, BoSox, Blue Jays and Yankees all ahead of them.
Sep 11 2021Gonzales (8-5) recorded the win in a victory over the Diamondbacks on Friday, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander continued his mostly strong stretch run during his 101-pitch outing, with the second-inning home run he allowed to Henry Ramos his one glaring mistake. Gonzales bounced back nicely from surrendering five earned runs over five innings to this same Diamondbacks squad in his prior start, and he's now posted quality outings in six of his last eight trips to the mound. Gonzales will look to do his part to keep the Mariners' postseason push strong in his next start, tentatively scheduled at home Wednesday versus the Red Sox.
Sep 5 2021Gonzales (7-5) was credited with the win Saturday against Arizona despite allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings. He struck out two batters and surrendered two homers. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The start wasn't among the left-hander's finest this season, but Gonzales nonetheless managed to stretch his streak of decisions without a loss to six. It was the first time since his last loss -- which took place July 3 against Texas -- that Gonzales has given up five or more runs, with four of the five tallies against him Saturday coming in the first inning. The veteran has served up two long balls in each of his past three games but has walked away with two wins in that span. His next start is likely to come Friday in a rematch against the Diamondbacks.
Aug 29 2021Gonzales (6-5) allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four across seven runs, earning the win over the Royals on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed a pair of solo home runs, one by Salvador Perez and the other by Michael Taylor. Despite the long balls, Gonzalez allowed no further damage in seven innings for the win. He has surrendered three or less runs in each of his last nine starts. The 29-year-old has a 4.02 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with 83 strikeouts in 107.1 innings this season.
Aug 23 2021Gonzales pitched six innings in Monday's 5-3 win over Oakland, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. He didn't factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales needed only 90 pitches to complete an efficient six innings and was actually in line for the loss until Seattle rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth to eke out the win. The 29-year-old lefty has now limited his baserunners to five or fewer in four of his five August starts, though he also has surpassed five strikeouts in just one of those outings. Gonzales is expected to take the mound next against Kansas City on Sunday.
Aug 19 2021Gonzales evened his record at 5-5 after holding the Rangers to scoreless over 5.1 innings Wednesday in the Mariners' 3-1 victory. He scattered six hits and one walk and struck out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Since being tagged for a season-high-tying seven earned runs July 3 against Texas, Gonzales has avenged that loss in his subsequent three matchups with the Rangers, all of which have come within his last four outings. In those most recent three starts versus Texas, Gonzales has posted an 0.88 ERA and 0.74 WHIP in 20.1 innings. He'll draw a tougher matchup his next time out, with a road date in Oakland likely awaiting Gonzales on Monday or Tuesday.
Aug 12 2021Gonzales (4-5) allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk while striking out nine across nine innings, earning the win over the Rangers on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales fired his first complete game of the season, while his nine strikeouts were a season high. The only run scored came on a solo home run by Charlie Culberson. The 29-year-old has allowed just two runs over his last 21.2 innings. His ERA has dropped to 4.35 and his WHIP to 1.26. He has 74 strikeouts in 89 innings pitched.
Aug 7 2021Gonzales didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Yankees despite tossing 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while fanning five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales might have ended with a no-decision for the second straight start, but he delivered another strong outing to extend his streak of excellent appearances. He has given up two or fewer runs in each of his last four starts and has gone 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in that stretch. He also has two quality starts in that span.
Aug 2 2021Gonzales didn't factor into the decision Sunday in the Mariners' 4-3 loss to the Rangers after working six innings and giving up one run on five hits and no walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After submitting his first quality start since June 20, Gonzales departed with a 2-1 lead and looked on track to win his third straight decision. Seattle padded its total with another run in the seventh inning, but all of that was for naught when Erik Swanson served up back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth to blow the save. Though he was denied the victory, fantasy managers that were banking on a Gonzales turnaround can take solace in the improved form he displayed Sunday. He came into the outing with a 5.48 ERA and 1.47 WHIP through his first 13 starts of the season.
Jul 25 2021Gonzales (3-5) earned the win Sunday against the Athletics after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while fanning four across 5.2 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales ended just one out away from recording his fourth quality start of the season, but he did just enough to earn his third win of the year. He has now two wins in a row and clinched back-to-back victories for the first time in 2021 while also allowing exactly two runs in each start. He's scheduled to pitch again next week during the road series against the Rangers.
Jul 20 2021Gonzales (2-5) allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three across five innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Rockies. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales held the Mariners scoreless through four innings but surrendered a two-run home run to Connor Joe in the fifth frame. Those were the only runs Gonzales surrendered, though he regularly was forced to work out of trouble as he allowed multiple baserunners in three of his five innings. Even so, it was a successful outing for Gonzales, and he has now thrown at least five innings and surrendered three earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. For the season, he has a 5.69 ERA with a 52:24 K:BB across 61.2 innings.
Jul 10 2021Gonzales did not factor in the decision against the Angels on Friday, hurling 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales gave up a single run in each of the first three innings before settling down through the remainder of his outing. He nearly notched a quality start but was pulled from the contest after allowing runners on the corners with two outs in the sixth. Gonzales has now gone eight straight starts without earning a win, though he has given up three or fewer runs in six of those appearances. His overall 5.88 ERA and 1.46 WHIP on the season aren't pretty, though, and his mediocre 7.8 K/9 makes him hard to hold onto in fantasy leagues despite the solid numbers he put up in 2020.
Jul 3 2021Gonzales (1-5) lost Saturday's 7-3 match with Texas, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales cruised through the first two frames before allowing all seven runs in the third and fourth on three home runs and a double. The blow-up appearance was his first in seven turns allowing more than four runs and raised his ERA to 5.82.
Jun 30 2021The Mariners reinstated Gonzales (personal) from the paternity list Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was away from the team for three days while he and his wife welcomed a baby into the world. The Mariners have yet to announce when Gonzales will make his next appearance, but he'll presumably slot into the rotation at some point during this weekend's series with the Rangers.
Jun 27 2021Gonzales won't start Sunday against the White Sox after being placed on the paternity list so he can attend the birth of his first child, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was previously slated to start the seven-inning contest that will follow the suspended game from Saturday, but the Mariners will need to turn elsewhere for innings during the series finale. Gonzales would figure to be able to pitch sometime during the upcoming series against the Blue Jays, but he's not currently listed among the club's probables for the series in Buffalo. If that holds, he could line up to take the ball Friday against the Rangers. The Mariners have yet to announce who will toe the rubber in place of Gonzales on Sunday.
Jun 21 2021Gonzales allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings Sunday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales kept the Rays off the scoreboard for five innings until Manuel Margot tied the game up in the sixth with an RBI double. The 29-year-old lefty then allowed back-to-back doubles in the seventh to give the Rays a 2-1 advantage and was promptly pulled from the game. Gonzales currently sports a disappointing 5.10 ERA and has a 42:18 K:BB over 47.2 innings. He's lined up for a tough road matchup against the White Sox this weekend.
Jun 15 2021Gonzalez allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings Monday against the Twins. He did not factor into the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales gave up an early run in the first thanks to three singles, and he was tagged for two more runs on a pair of solo homers before his day was over. The 29-year-old has been unable to top five innings in three outings since returning from the injured list and has been a major disappointment after a stellar 2020 season, as he owns a 5.44 ERA and 36:15 K:BB over 41.1 innings. He's currently lined up to face the red-hot Rays this weekend in Seattle.
Jun 9 2021Gonzales (1-4) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Tigers after allowing four runs on five hits and a walk while fanning two across four innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales didn't have his best stuff Tuesday and this outing was a clear step in the wrong direction, as he was coming off four straight appearances in which he allowed two or fewer runs. The left-hander owns a 5.45 ERA across 36.1 innings on the season and is scheduled to take the mound during next week's series at home against the Twins.
Jun 1 2021Gonzales took the no-decision Tuesday in a 6-5 loss to Oakland, pitching four innings, pitching four innings and allowing one run on two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales made his return after missing over a month and didn't miss a beat as it only took him 50 pitches to get through four, one-run innings. Although he didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the win, the Mariner bullpen blew a three-run lead anyway so it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Gonzales will look to build on the encouraging start as he lines up to face Detroit next Tuesday.
May 27 2021Gonzales (forearm) is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales will return to the major-league mound after an absence of just over a month due to a mild forearm strain. The southpaw will be on a pitch count during Tuesday's start and is expected to pitch between three and four innings. Gonzales made five starts prior to his injury and posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 28.1 innings.
May 26 2021Mariners manager Scott Servais said Wednesday that he's hopeful Gonzales (forearm) will be able to return from the 10-day injured list when his next turn through the rotation comes up June 1 versus the Athletics, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Seattle has mostly kept its six-man rotation intact since Gonzales strained his forearm during an April 27 start, relying mostly on bullpen days for the lefty's turns through the rotation due to the lack of healthy starting options available on the 40-man roster. Gonzales, meanwhile, has made solid progress in his rehab program of late, most recently throwing an extended simulated game. Servais doesn't believe that Gonzales will require a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated, and the southpaw isn't expected to require any major restrictions with his workload once he's deemed ready to go.
May 25 2021Gonzales (forearm) is slated to throw a 45-to-50-pitch simulated game this week, the Associated Press reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales completed multiple throwing sessions last week without setbacks, setting up this next step in his recovery process. If the left-hander is able to get through the sim game in similarly successful fashion, he could be deemed ready for activation without the need for a rehab assignment.
May 18 2021Gonzales (forearm) threw off a mound for the second straight day Tuesday without setbacks, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander is getting closer to the one-month mark with respect to his injured-list stint, but with back-to-back days free of health-related snags, he could also be ready to face live hitters before the end of the week. If all continues to go smoothly for Gonzales, he could be deemed ready for activation before the end of the month without the need for a rehab assignment.
May 17 2021Gonzales (forearm) successfully threw 15 short-distance pitches off a mound Monday and is scheduled to throw again Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Drayer notes that Gonzales felt strong on the hill Monday and that if all goes well Tuesday, he could be on track to throw a bullpen session Friday. The southpaw was placed on the 10-day injured list April 29 with a mild forearm strain.
May 16 2021Gonzales (forearm) will throw off a mound Monday for the first time since landing on the injured list, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 29-year-old landed on the shelf with a mild forearm strain April 29 and has been throwing off flat ground, but Monday will be his first time throwing off a mound since suffering the injury. Gonzales was initially expected to face a short absence, but the left-hander likely will need some time to build his stamina back up after being limited for the past couple weeks.
May 7 2021Gonzales (forearm) could advance to mound work as soon as this weekend, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales has been out for eight days with a forearm strain, which is considered mild. His return date remains unclear, but the Mariners' plans should be clarified once the lefty gets back on the mound.
May 2 2021Mariners manager Scott Servais said Gonzales (forearm) was able to throw off flat ground Sunday, Lauren Smith of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a mild left forearm strain, but the fact that he was able to play catch three days later suggests that he could be in store for a brief stay on the shelf. The Mariners likely won't iron out a firm target date for Gonzales' return until he resumes facing hitters in a live batting practice session or simulated game. Seattle isn't expected to shorten its rotation to five men while Gonzales is sidelined, but the team could opt for bullpen games when the southpaw's turn comes up rather than appointing a sixth starter.
Apr 29 2021Gonzales was placed on the injured list with a mild forearm strain Thursday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Mariners haven't offered a precise timeline for Gonzales' return, but he's expected to miss at least a couple starts, which seemingly means he'll be out for longer than the minimum 10 days. Domingo Tapia was recalled in a corresponding move.
Apr 27 2021Gonzales (1-3) took the loss against Houston on Tuesday, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales wasn't quite as effective as in his prior outing, when he yielded only one run across seven innings against the Dodgers, but he repeated the unenviable feat of taking a loss in spite of registering a quality start. The southpaw held Houston scoreless in each inning except the fourth, when the Astros put up the only pair of runs in the game. The positive takeaway is that Gonzales appears to have fully turned things around after a poor start to the campaign in which he gave up 12 earned runs across his first 10.1 frames. He'll face Baltimore at home in his next scheduled start Monday.
Apr 20 2021Gonzales (1-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Dodgers despite allowing one run on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales and Julio Urias were engaged in a pitcher's duel Tuesday, and the two offenses combined for one run on three hits all afternoon. It's a brutal loss for Gonzales, but the performance remains a welcome sight after surrendering 12 runs over his first two starts of the season. The 29-year-old will look to build on that performance early next week at Houston.
Apr 15 2021Gonzales (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out five across five innings to earn the win in Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Orioles. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales began the season by allowing 12 earned runs across 10.1 innings while surrendering five home runs in his first two starts. It looked to be more of the same Thursday when he allowed a two-run home run in the opening frame, though he settled in from there to turn in his first solid outing of the campaign. Despite the positive outcome, the outing still had its flaws, as Gonzales has now surrendered multiple walks in all three of his turns through the rotation and maintains a 4.1 BB/9. He's currently projected to draw his next start Thursday at Boston.
Apr 8 2021Gonzales (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Twins on Thursday after surrendering seven runs on nine hits and a pair of walks while striking out six across 4.1 innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: After struggling in his Opening Day debut during which he gave up a career-high-tying five runs and three walks, Gonzales fell apart once again, this time serving up a pair of home runs while continuing to struggle with his command. Across 10.1 innings, the southpaw has allowed 12 runs and five walks, not quite the numbers you want to see. Gonzales will get a chance to turn things around with a road start next Thursday at Baltimore.
Apr 2 2021Gonzales gave up five earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out two in six innings Thursday against the Giants. He did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The three walks compared to two strikeouts are particularly worrisome for Gonzales, who relies on locating and sequencing his pitches to make up for a lack of lights-out stuff. He lines up to start in Minnesota on Thursday, which should put the confidence of his fantasy managers to the test.
Mar 27 2021Gonzales allowed six earned runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings in a Cactus League loss to the Padres on Friday. He struck out four. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales won't exactly head into his projected Opening Day start against the Giants on Thursday with much momentum, as he gave up a combined 11 earned runs on 18 hits, three walks and a hit batsman over his last two Cactus League starts. The left-hander did provide glimpses of his customary form in his first two trips to the mound this spring (six scoreless innings), so the hope is he was simply working through some kinks.
Mar 20 2021Gonzales allowed five earned runs on nine hits, a walk and a hit batsman across 4.2 innings in a Cactus League win over the White Sox on Friday. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The right-hander fell just short of his five-inning goal, yet he did actually reach his 75-pitch threshold. The majority of his troubles came over the first two frames, but Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports Gonzales was able to finish on a positive note with a scoreless effort when he came back out for the third inning.
Mar 14 2021Gonzales fired four scoreless innings in a Cactus League loss to the Rockies on Saturday, allowing two hits and no walks while recording five strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander stretched out to 58 pitches, impressively throwing 44 for strikes. Gonzales has fired six scoreless spring frames across his first two outings, and Saturday, he notably put on his impressive performance against a Rockies lineup full of regulars.
Mar 4 2021Gonzales allowed just an unearned run on two hits and a walk over two innings in his Cactus League debut against the Padres on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander, already named the Opening Day starter, turned in a strong performance to kick off spring and encouragingly was efficient enough to get through multiple frames right from his first outing. Despite the return of James Paxton to the team this offseason, Gonzales is still rightfully considered the ace of the staff after following up the combined 29 wins he notched in the 2018-19 seasons with a 7-2 record and career bests in ERA (3.10) and WHIP (0.95) across 69.2 innings in 2020.
Feb 21 2021Gonzales was officially named the Mariners' Opening Day starter Sunday, Lauren Smith of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales will get the ball when the Mariners host the Giants on April 1. The lefty was a fairly clear choice for the honor, though the team could have handed the ball to former ace James Paxton, who returned to Seattle following a pair of seasons as a Yankee. Gonzales doesn't have the traditional strikeout stuff of an ace and probably wouldn't fill that role on a contender, but he's coming off a year in which he rode a roughly league-average 23.1 percent strikeout rate and a stellar 2.5 percent walk rate to a 3.10 ERA and can certainly help both big-league and fantasy rotations.
Sep 27 2020Gonzales allowed two runs on six hits and one walk across five innings in Sunday's loss to the Athletics. He struck out five and did not factor in the decision. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: A pair of hits led to a run off Gonzales in the first, but the southpaw was able to settle down to keep the A's off the board during the next three frames. Oakland tagged him with one more run in the fifth when Chad Pinder drove in Sean Murphy with a two-out single. Gonzales ultimately took a no-decision after exiting with the game tied at 2-2. The left-hander concludes the season with a strong 3.10 ERA and 0.95 WHIP to go along with a 7-2 record.
Sep 21 2020Gonzales (7-2) tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts in a win over the Astros on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales turned in a stellar performance Monday, and the Mariners' bats came alive in the seventh inning to give him a lead. The southpaw dropped his ERA to 3.06 with a 0.91 WHIP and 59:6 K:BB in 64.2 innings this season. Gonzales lines up for one more start in the regular season, which would be Sunday in Oakland.
Sep 15 2020Gonzales (6-2) picked up the win during a 6-5 victory over the A's in the first game of Monday's doubleheader, giving up five runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: He was engaged in what seemed like it was going to be a pitchers' duel with Jesus Luzardo through three innings before serving up homers to Sean Murphy and Marcus Semien in the fourth, but Gonzales persevered and was rewarded when the M's staged a comeback in the fifth and sixth frames. The veteran southpaw has won four straight starts, and he'll carry a stellar 3.49 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 53:5 K:BB through 56.2 innings into his next outing Sept. 21, at home against the Astros.
Sep 7 2020Gonzales (5-2) picked up the win in Monday's 8-4 victory over the Rangers, allowing two runs on four hits over seven innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw has now delivered quality starts in three of his last four outings and five of his last seven. Gonzales will take a career-best 3.02 ERA and 46:4 K:BB through 50.2 innings into his next start, current;y scheduled for Sept. 14 as part of a homer doubleheader against the A's.
Aug 31 2020Gonzalez (4-2) picked up the win Monday against the Angels, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while tossing his second career complete game. He struck out seven. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales fell behind 1-0 after allowing a solo homer to Justin Upton in the second inning, but that would be all the Angels could muster off the southpaw. The 28-year-old allowed just two hits across his final seven innings and the Mariners plated a pair of runs to get him his fourth win. The gem has Gonzales's ERA down to a strong 3.09 to go along with 39 strikeouts on the campaign. Seattle's pitching plans aren't clear at the moment, with the first two games of their scheduled series against Oakland being postponed. That being said, the lefty figures to take the ball some time during the weekend series against Texas.
Aug 25 2020Gonzales (3-2) allowed three runs on nine hits over five innings in a win over the Padres on Tuesday. He struck out five and did not issue a walk. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Road starts in San Diego are now rather scary with the way the Padres' offense has been rolling, but Gonzales managed to come away with the win, scattering his nine hits and limiting the damage to three runs. The lefty now has a 14:0 K:BB in his last two starts, both against tough opponents (he threw seven innings of one-run ball against the Dodgers on Aug. 18). Seattle has been going with a six-man rotation, so don't expect to see Gonzales on the mound until next Monday against the Angels.
Aug 19 2020Gonzales didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Dodgers, giving up one run on five hits over seven innings. He struck out a season-high nine without walking a batter. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw found himself locked in a pitcher's duel with Tony Gonsolin, and while Gonzales did come away with his third quality start in five outings, the Mariners couldn't scrape together enough offense to get him into the win column. Gonzales will take a 3.34 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 26:3 K:BB through 29.2 innings into his next start, currently scheduled for Aug. 25 in San Diego.
Aug 12 2020Gonzales (2-2) was tagged with the loss Tuesday against the Rangers. He gave up four runs on seven hits and one walk while fanning two across five innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales threw 61 of his 89 pitches for strikes, but he surrendered two runs in the first inning and two more during the third -- those early struggles were the reason why he was tagged with his second loss of the campaign. The 28-year-old lefty has a 3.97 ERA and an elite 0.97 WHIP in 22.2 innings this season ahead of his next scheduled start on the road against the Dodgers on Aug. 18.
Aug 6 2020Gonzales (2-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Angels after giving up three runs on three hits -- all of them home runs -- while striking out seven across seven innings. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed homers to Max Stassi in the third, and both David Fletcher and Mike Trout in the sixth, but he was excellent the rest of the way while posting his second straight quality start. The long ball has been an issue early in the season, however, as he has already given up four homers in just 17.2 innings. That's an area where he needs to improve ahead of his next start, scheduled for Aug. 11 against the Rangers on the road.
Jul 30 2020Gonzales (1-1) allowed two unearned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out six over 6.1 innings in a win over the Angels on Thursday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales' only blemish was a fifth-inning two-run home run by Angels catcher Max Stassi, but due to an earlier error, the runs were unearned. The 28-year-old Gonzales made improvements over his previous outing, when he allowed four runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings versus the Astros. The southpaw maintains his status as the Mariners' ace and will likely get a rematch at home versus the Angels on Wednesday.
Jul 24 2020Gonzales (0-1) surrendered four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. He struck out two in a loss to the Astros on Friday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales allowed an RBI single to Martin Maldonado in the third inning before the wheels came off completely in the fifth for the southpaw. The 28-year-old Gonzales has collected 29 wins in 63 starts over the last two seasons. He'll look for his first victory of 2020 when he faces the Angels on the road Thursday.
Jul 19 2020Gonzales, the Mariners' Opening Day starter, was impressive over his four-inning start in Saturday's intrasquad game, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. "I feel ready to go, my body feels strong," said Gonzales following his outing. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The southpaw allowed two runs on five hits and a wild pitch while recording three strikeouts, but he arguably performed even better than the line indicates. Drayer reports the first run was partly manufactured by a Mallex Smith popup bunt, with the speedy outfielder subsequently advancing on Gonzales' errant offering. Gonzales also didn't allow much hard contact outside of a double he surrendered to Evan White, and he was efficient enough to reach his 50-pitch limit across four frames instead of three. It remains to be seen how long Gonzales will be allowed to go Opening Day against the Astros, but with manager Scott Servais planning a six-man rotation, it's likely his workload will be relatively abbreviated.
Jul 13 2020Gonzales recorded four strikeouts over his two-inning appearance in Sunday's intrasquad game, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The Opening Day starter generated a mixed bag of a performance in his penultimate intrasquad start, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over his pair of frames. Gonzales declared himself "as ready I'm going to be" ahead of Opening Day after putting in steady work during the shutdown, and despite the unsteady line Sunday, he came away satisfied with his time on the mound. "A little bit of timing things here and there," he said. "Some kinks to work out. But, overall, it felt good with the fastball, and I located most of my pitches. It just felt good to compete again in a game-like situation."
Jul 8 2020Manager Scott Servais confirmed Wednesday that Gonzales will start the Mariners' July 24 season opener versus the Astros, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Servais added that Gonzales will make his first start of summer camp in Sunday's intrasquad game, which would keep the lefty on pace to make one more turn beyond that before the Mariners head to Houston for the opener. With few other established options in the Seattle rotation, Gonzales was the logical choice for the Opening Day nod after starting 63 games across the past tow seasons and accruing a 3.99 ERA over that span.
Jul 3 2020Gonzales threw 40-50 pitches in the bullpen during the Mariners' first day of summer camp Friday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The projected Opening Day starter was excited to get back to throwing off a dirt mound for the first time in months, and his arm seemed to be in good condition after he regularly worked off turf during the three-month-plus shutdown. Gonzales had progressed up to 60 pitches in his final Cactus League start, and given the workload he tolerated during his first day of summer camp, he should be ready for a solid workload by the time the regular season arrives.
Mar 31 2020Gonzales is back in his West Seattle home and is keeping his arm in shape on an offseason routine, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Johns reports the left-hander is throwing and playing long toss with teammate Patrick Wisdom on what normally would be his December routine, acting on the assumption that he'll still have about a three-to-four-week ramp-up period before the regular season begins. Gonzales does have a full basement gym at his disposal and feels confident he'll be able to get fully back on track mentally once MLB has a firm re-start date. "I think once we kind of have a date on the books, things will become clearer for us," he said. "It is an interesting thing for an athlete to go through to have a start of the season on the books, and then to have that scratched. And now we don't know when we're going to start or if we're going to start, so it is kind of a confusing time right now."
Mar 13 2020Gonzales started a rain-shortened Cactus League win over a Padres split squad on Wednesday and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out five. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander bounced back nicely after a rough outing in his first spring start, allowing just Thursday's earned run over 6.1 innings combined across his last two appearances. Greg Johns of MLB.com reports Gonzales would have been in line for two more Cactus League outings had the remainder of spring training not been suspended due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, but all that is up in the air now. Johns adds Gonzales' removal in the fourth inning was due to the 28-year-old having reached a 60-plus pitch count and not because of any injury-related issue. "I was a lot more crisp than the last couple times out," Gonzales said. "I'm definitely feeling confident with my fastball and landing some off-speed pitches. So that was great. I had the walks and some little mistakes here and there, but overall I felt pretty sharp."
Mar 7 2020Gonzales threw 61 pitches in a "B" game on the back field of the Mariners' spring training complex Friday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The left-hander was scratched from Friday's Cactus League start against the Dodgers in order to clear the path for some younger arms to gain game experience, but Gonzales still got his work in versus Shed Long, Dee Gordon, Cal Raleigh and Austin Shenton. Gonzales is slated to return to Cactus League action at some point next week.
Mar 5 2020Gonzales will pitch an intersquad game Friday rather than start the Mariners' Cactus League matchup against the Dodgers, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The 28-year-old is expected to throw 3-4 innings during an intersquad game at the team complex Friday afternoon. The sudden change of plans is not injury-related and Gonzales will likely make his third Cactus League outing sometime next week. The southpaw will look to build upon a career-low 3.99 ERA last season during his fourth campaign in Seattle in 2020.
Mar 1 2020Gonzales started Saturday's Cactus League loss to the Royals, firing three scoreless innings during which he allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The young left-hander raised some eyebrows in his first start of the spring Monday when he allowed five earned runs on three hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning versus the Cubs. However, Gonzales turned in a polar-opposite effort Saturday. Greg Johns of MLB.com reports Gonzales credited a "better pregame routine" with helping him turn things around against Kansas City, as well as a focus on making his delivery more compact. He'll look to build on his momentum in his next spring turn, which is likely to come toward the end of the week.
Feb 25 2020Gonzales started Monday's Cactus League's loss to the Cubs and allowed five earned runs on three hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The young southpaw's spring could hardly have gotten off to a more unfavorable start, as Gonzales got himself in trouble early with a leadoff walk to Kris Bryant and unraveled from that point. Despite the ugly final line, the 28-year-old, who's expected to serve as the ace of the staff once again after posting a 16-6 record last season, put a positive spin on the results after the game, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "You go out the first one and you just want to feel good and throw some strikes," Gonzales said. "My timing was a little off and I was frustrated a little bit by my execution. But for the first time out, I wanted to feel good and have the ball feel good coming out of my hand. The results are what they are at this time of year."
Feb 3 2020Gonzales signed a four-year extension with the Mariners on Monday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: The deal contains a club option for a fifth season, giving Seattle control over the lefty through his age-32 season and buying out up to two years of his free agency. Gonzales will make $30 million over the first four years of the deal, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The southpaw has emerged as the rebuilding Mariners' top starter over the last two seasons, posting ERAs of 4.00 and 3.99. His 18.7 percent career strikeout rate keeps his fantasy ceiling fairly low, however.
Sep 28 2019Gonzales (16-13) allowed one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four over seven innings in a loss to the A's on Saturday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: It was a quality start, and in fact an "ultra quality start," but Brett Anderson and company blanked the Mariners and thus Gonzales was stuck with the loss. The left-handed Gonzales ends the year with a 3.99 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 147:56 K:BB in 203 innings. He looks like a lock to make his second straight Opening Day start for Seattle in 2020.
Sep 22 2019Gonzales (16-12) allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks over seven innings as he took the loss against the Orioles on Sunday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales had a nice day on the mound despite getting hit with the loss. He allowed a run to score in the first inning off of an RBI double by Renato Nunez but shut the Orioles down until he gave up a solo home run to Chris Davis in the seventh inning. Gonzales has been the only guy in the Mariners' rotation who has consistently produced positive results for the club all year. The left-hander has a 4.09 ERA and a 143:53 K:BB ratio through 196 innings. He is only 27 and should be a piece the Mariners should want to keep moving forward. Gonzales will make his final start of the season Saturday at home against the Athletics.
Sep 17 2019Gonzales (16-11) pitched seven shutout innings, allowing six hits with zero walks and four strikeouts to earn a victory against the Pirates on Tuesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: This was arguably Gonzales best start since April, as it was the first time he didn't yield a run or walk since April 25. Gonzales' numbers are about average across the board, but he's been involved in a lot of decisions, leading to 16 wins and 11 losses. He could finish Top 5 in the American League in wins despite owning an ERA above 4.00. Gonzales, who will pitch next at the Orioles on Sunday, has a 4.14 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 139 strikeouts in 189 innings this season.
Sep 12 2019Gonzales (15-11) gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven through seven innings to earn the win over the Reds on Wednesday. ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Gonzales posted 15 swinging strikes as he delivered seven quality innings in the win. The 27-year-old now has nine starts with at least seven innings and allowing two runs or fewer. Gonzales has a 3-2 record with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in his last seven starts. Gonzales is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday against the Pirates at PNC Park.
Aug 31 2019Gonzales (14-11) took the loss Friday, coughing up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over 5.2 innings while striking out two as the Mariners fell
Aug 25 2019Gonzales (14-10) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over seven frames Sunday, striking out five and earning the win over Toronto.
Aug 19 2019Gonzales gave up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five through five innings to take the win over the Rays on Monday.
Aug 14 2019Gonzales gave up three runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out six through six innings to take the loss against the Tigers on Wednesday.
Aug 9 2019Gonzales left Friday's game against the Rays after taking a comebacker off his left leg, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks
Aug 5 2019Gonzales could see his innings limited down the stretch if the Mariners opt to expand their starting rotation to six pitchers, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

Jul 22 2018Gonzales (11-5) got the win against the White Sox on Sunday, giving up two earned runs on four hits over 6.1 innings, striking out six and walking one in Seattle's 8-2 victory. The young left-hander continues to roll, as his latest strong effort marked his fourth straight winning decision - a stretch that has seen him give up just four earned runs and strike out 26 batters over 28.1 innings. At this point, it seems fair to say that Gonzales is in the midst of a breakout campaign, as his 3.38 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 104:23 K:BB are all excellent numbers. He's certainly emerged as a reliable fantasy contributor, although his value would take a hit if the Mariners end up deciding to manage his innings in the second half of the season, as he's coming off Tommy John surgery.
Jul 19 2018Gonzales (calf) will make his next scheduled start Sunday against the White Sox, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.Gonzalez took a line drive off his left calf in his final start before the All-Star break July 11 against the Angels, but he remained in the game and picked up his 10th win while tossing seven scoreless innings. With a full 10 days off to heal up, Gonzales shouldn't face any restrictions in his return to the mound and looks like a solid play in most fantasy formats as he takes on a White Sox offense that has the second-highest strikeout rate (25.5 percent) in the majors this season.
Jul 12 2018Gonzales was seen icing his left calf in the clubhouse following Wednesday's shutout win over the Angels, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. The left-hander sustained the injury when took a liner off the left leg in the fourth inning of his stellar outing. Gonzales downplayed the situation, confirming he would have been able to make his next scheduled start if the All-Star break wasn't next week. He'll now have plenty of extra time to recuperate due to the Midsummer Classic, and Johns also reports that manager Scott Servais is likely to delay Gonzales' first second-half start for several days after the layoff.
Jul 11 2018Gonzales (10-5) tossed seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits and struck out four in a win Wednesday over the Angels.Gonzalez will go into the break riding a hot streak with quality start victories in each of his final three starts of the first half. He induced only three swinging strikes all night, but he was able to pitch to contact thanks to his pinpoint control. For the fifth time in 19 starts, Gonzales didn't walk a single batter. He'll take a 1.8 BB/9 and a 3.41 ERA into the All-Star break of what has easily been the best season of his young career.
Jul 5 2018Gonzales (9-5) allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven across six innings to earn the win Thursday against the Angels.Gonzales held the Angels to just one extra-base hit -- a double by Mike Trout -- though he didn't work especially efficiently, requiring 102 pitches to complete his six innings of work. Though he induced an ordinary 11 swinging strikes, Thursday's start marked only the second time in his past 10 starts that he was able to strike out more than one batter per inning. While that detracts from his value, his ratios and wins are enough to make him a solid option in most league formats.
Jun 30 2018Gonzales, who's already tossed 100.1 innings across 17 starts this season, may have his innings managed in the second half of the season, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. While manager Scott Servais wouldn't commit to any type of innings limit on Gonzales, he did acknowledge that there's a possibility the team will deploy a six-man rotation in August. That would allow Gonzales -- as well as veterans such as Felix Hernandez and Mike Leake -- to go longer between starts during the season's stretch run. The main reason for discussions concerning limiting Gonzales' workload is due to the fact that he's in the midst of his first full season following 2016 Tommy John surgery, and because he's already close to exceeding the 126.1 frames he worked between the minors and the Mariners in 2017. Christian Bergman, who's currently in Triple-A Tacoma, and long reliever Roenis Elias are two candidates for filling in at the back end of the rotation later this summer if necessary.
Jun 29 2018Gonzales (8-5) got a complete-game victory against the Royals on Friday, giving up six hits and striking out seven with no walks while allowing one earned run in Seattle's 4-1 victory.Gonzales was tantalizingly close to making this a shutout, but he surrendered an RBI single to Mike Moustakas in the ninth inning. Even so, it was a phenomenal outing from the 26-year-old left-hander, who is quietly turning in a solid season in Seattle. With this start in the bag, Gonzales now has a 3.77 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP and an 87:20 K:BB through 100.1 innings. He has a division matchup with the Angels next on the docket on July 5.
Jun 24 2018Gonzales gave up five runs on seven hits and zero walks while striking out six across six innings Sunday in a 5-0 loss in Boston. His season ERA had been below 4.00 from May 28 to June 19, but with this outing it is now back up over that mark at 4.04 through 16 starts. After giving up just six total earned runs in six starts from May 17 to June 13, facing teams like the Tigers, A's, Rangers and Rays (twice), he has now given up 11 earned runs over his last two starts on the road against the Red Sox and Yankees. While he is clearly a serviceable big-league starter, fantasy owners in mixed leagues would be wise to consider sitting or starting him based on matchups going forward. He has a favorable one on tap next weekend at home against the Royals.
Jun 19 2018Gonzales (7-4) took the loss against the Yankees on Tuesday, allowing six runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out five and walked one.Gonzales gave up home runs to Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Andujar and Aaron Hicks as he allowed more than three runs for the first time in his last six starts, and allowed more than four runs for the first time in 2018. The 26-year-old has a 3.80 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with a 74:20 K:BB across 85.1 innings, and lines up for another tough matchup Sunday against the Red Sox.
Jun 13 2018Gonzales didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Angels, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings while striking out seven. The left-hander threw 66 of 101 pitches for strikes and exited the game in line for his eighth win of the season, but the M's bullpen couldn't make a 4-3 lead hold up. Gonzales will carry a 3.42 ERA into his next outing Tuesday on the road against the Yankees.
Jun 11 2018Gonzales -- who missed all of 2016 due to Tommy John surgery -- has thrown 74 innings across 13 starts, but manager Scott Servais remains unconcerned about his workload, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "I'm not concerned right now," Servais said. "We're just trying to win games. There may be some starts down the road where Marco hits a little bump and you recognize it and get him out of the game. But he's been really good, really consistent for us."The 26-year-old southpaw has proven to be one of the American League's steadiest starters, generating a 7-3 record and 3.28 ERA. Gonzales totaled 126.1 innings last season between Triple-A Tacoma and the big-league club, and he's never thrown more than 156.2 innings in any professional stop. However, Gonzales has shown solid stamina thus far, and some of the tips he's picked up from fellow lefty and staff mate James Paxton about conditioning between starts seem to be serving him well. Servais has particularly taken note that Gonzales' velocity has encouragingly sustained into later innings. "With Marco, his stuff is carrying deep into games. He was throwing 91 mph in the eighth inning the other night and it still looked as sharp as it did early in the game."
Jun 8 2018Gonzales (7-3) allowed two runs on five hits in a win over the Rays on Friday, striking out three and walking zero in 7.1 innings.Gonzales has earned a win in his last four consecutive starts, bringing his ERA down to 3.28 in the process. The 26-year-old has recorded seven quality starts this season, and is carrying a 62:17 K:BB in 74 innings. His .267 batting average against is a little high but he has managed to induce 11 double plays on the year, which is tied for third in MLB. His next start will be against the Angles at home.
Jun 2 2018Gonzales (6-3) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings in a win over the Rays on Saturday. The lefty allowed an RBI double near the end of his outing but was otherwise excellent. He has now earned wins in each of his last three starts and has allowed all of one earned run in his last four turns spanning 26 innings. It's been a massive turnaround from a season ago (6.08 ERA, 1.75 WHIP), and the peripherals mostly support what Gonzales is doing. He gets the Rays again his next time out, this time in Tampa Bay.
May 29 2018Gonzales (5-3) allowed just one unearned run on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts through 6.2 innings to earn the win Monday over Texas. As usual, Gonzales nibbled with the fastball and used his changeup and curveball to do most of the dirty work. Of 16 balls in play Monday night, 12 were off the changeup or fastball, and nine of those went for outs. Gonzales gets around his lack of top-end stuff by expertly changing speeds, and it's hard to argue with the effectiveness. Gonzales's ERA is down to 3.60 thanks to a run of three straight starts without an earned run, and he is now 4-1 in his last five decisions. He'll look to stay hot Saturday against the Rays.
May 24 2018Gonzales (4-3) struck out six and held the Athletics to just two hits and two walks through seven shutout innings in a winning effort Wednesday night.Gonzales threw each of his four pitches for strikes with regularity Wednesday, as he threw at least 50 percent strikes on his fastball, sinker, changeup and curve -- and threw each at least 20 times. That ability to change speeds and rely on each different pitch for strikes in different counts is critical to Gonzales's success, as his fastball sits in the low-90s and can't be a swing-and-miss threat without breaking and off-speed pitches to keep hitters off balance. His next start will come Monday against the Rangers.
May 17 2018Gonzales didn't factor into the decision against Detroit on Thursday, scattering five hits and allowing one unearned run over 5.2 innings, striking out two and walking one as the Mariners eventually fell 3-2.Gonzales was able to shut down the Tigers in this contest but he wasn't rewarded with a victory as counterpart Matthew Boyd had an equally sharp outing for Detroit. It was a solid showing for the left-hander and he's demonstrated good control with a 43:9 K:BB but he's got a 4.66 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP through 46.1 innings and opponents are hitting .312 off him so far this year, so the 26-year-old will remain a risky fantasy stream until he starts to limit the baserunners and improve on those ratios.
May 12 2018Gonzales (3-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks across six innings Saturday against the Tigers. He struck out three.Gonzales took the ball in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against Detroit after his Friday start was postponed. Despite dealing with traffic all afternoon, the southpaw was able to limit the Tigers to one run through the first five innings. He faltered in the sixth, however, allowing three runs on three straight hits -- a double, single and homer -- before recording a strikeout to end the inning, and his evening. Gonzales now owns an unsightly 5.31 ERA and 1.52 WHIP through eight starts (40.2 innings) despite his solid 41:8 K:BB. He'll look to turn things around in his next start, which will be a rematch against the Tigers at home.
May 11 2018Gonzales will start Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader in Detroit after Friday night's game was postponed due to rain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.Friday's postponement provides an additional day of rest for Gonzales and puts a full six days since his start against the Angels last Saturday.
May 6 2018Gonzales allowed four earned runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out seven across six innings Saturday against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision.Gonzales danced in and out of trouble for much of the game, but managed to avoid any big blows for much of his start. That changed in the sixth inning when he allowed the first two batters of the inning to reach base and was ultimately taken deep by Jefry Marte for a three-run home run. Even so, Gonzales has been trending in the a positive direction, now having completed six innings of work in each of his past three starts after failing to do so in three of his first four starts this season. He continues to allow a lot of hits -- reflected by his 1.44 WHIP -- but has a .400 BABIP against that explains some of his struggles.
Apr 29 2018Gonzales (3-2) collected the win against the Indians on Sunday. He allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings.Gonzales served up a two-run shot to Brandon Guyer in the second inning but was able to work through the Indians' lineup rather efficiently Sunday en route to second straight winning decision. The lefty has allowed just two runs over his last 12 innings but still holds a rather unsightly 5.02 ERA. Gonzales is a fine streaming option against weaker opponents, but he's difficult to trust as a hold in season-long formats. He'll face a tough test next Saturday against the Angels.
Apr 24 2018Gonzales (2-2) tossed six scoreless innings in Tuesday's win over the White Sox. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out eight.Gonzales was pulled after throwing 89 pitches through six innings before four Mariner relievers combined to post the team's first shutout of the season. The southpaw now owns a 10.2 inning scoreless streak in which he's walked only two batters and struck out 16, lowering his ERA to a 4.37 mark. He'll look to extend his scoreless streak Sunday against the Indians.
Apr 19 2018Gonzales allowed three runs (zero earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out eight across 4.2 innings Thursday against the Astros. He did not factor in the decision.Gonzales was pulled after just 79 pitches but the end result was still his most promising start of the season. As usual, he was in the strike zone frequently with 52 of his 79 pitches resulting in a strike. However, he wasn't especially deceptive -- he generated only eight swinging strikes -- and benefited greatly from the Astros fouling off 20 of his offerings. Gonzales has some name recognition due to his prospect pedigree, but he hasn't shown the ability to pitch deep into games or limit runs on a consistent basis.
Apr 14 2018Gonzales allowed four earned runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five across 3.1 innings Saturday against the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision. It's hard to look at this line and take anything positive from it, but Gonzales managed to keep the ball in the yard yard and his team in the game. The positives end there, however, as Gonzales had his second consecutive disastrous start in which he has combined to allow eight earned runs across just 5.2 innings. Despite once being a promising prospect, he has yet to deliver results at the major-league level and there's no reason to trust him at this time.
Apr 9 2018Gonzales (1-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk while earning the loss Monday against the Royals. He struck out four.Gonzales allowed an early parade of baserunners, yielding three runs in the first inning while running up his pitch count. He moved through the second inning quickly before allowing the first two men to reach in the third -- one of whom came around to score after his removal with one out. Gonzales contributed a quality start in his previous outing against the Giants, but this performance gives him an inflated 7.27 ERA and 1.73 WHIP through nine innings this season. He'll look to bounce back this weekend against the Athletics.
Apr 8 2018Mariners manager Scott Servais confirmed that Gonzales would start Monday's game against the Royals, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. The postponement Sunday of the Mariners' series finale in Minnesota robbed Gonzales of a two-start week, but he'll at least benefit from trading a matchup with a tough Twins squad for one with a Royals team that had scored just 15 runs in its first six games. Gonzales was steady in his first outing of the season April 3 against the Giants, covering 6.1 innings and conceding three runs on six hits and no walks.
Apr 8 2018Gonzales won't start Sunday against the Twins after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The two sides will make up the contest May 14, which had been an off day for both teams. The Mariners have yet to announce how the postponement will affect their rotation plans, as the team could opt simply push Gonzales back a day in the schedule to start the series opener Monday in Kansas City or skip the lefty's turn through the rotation entirely.
Apr 3 2018Gonzales allowed three runs on six hits while striking out two batters through 6.1 innings to earn his first win of the season against San Francisco on Tuesday. The lefty posted a 2.08 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 7.3 K/9 over 26 innings through seven starts during spring training, and he continued pitching well Tuesday. The final two runs he allowed were on an Evan Longoria home run in the seventh inning, and there's a strong case to be made that he shouldn't have taken the hill against the heart of the lineup after going six strong. Gonzales missed all of the 2016 season following Tommy John surgery, so his 2017 results should probably be taken with a grain of salt. Considering he was a highly regarded prospect with first-round pedigree, there's upside here, and especially with Safeco Field projecting to remain a pitcher-friendly venue. Still, it's not out of the question to wait and see how Gonzales fares against the Twins at Target Field next time out, either.
Mar 23 2018Gonzales allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk over five innings in Thursday's 5-4 Cactus League win over the Rangers. He struck out five.Another step in the right direction for the southpaw, who looked back to form this spring following another year of restrengthening his surgically repaired elbow. Gonzales wraps up the exhibition slate having reached the five-inning mark in back-to-back outings, a stretch during which he only gave up Thursday's two earned runs. While he'll be further tested once the intensity ramps up in the regular season, the 26-year-old appears primed for a solid campaign if his spring work in any indication.
Mar 19 2018Gonzales (hand), who notched his first spring victory in Saturday's 7-0 Cactus League split-squad victory over the Angels by firing 5.2 scoreless innings during which he only allowed a hit and a walk while recording three strikeouts, is reaping the benefits of being another year removed from Tommy John surgery, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "It's a huge boost of confidence, the way I feel and the preparation and ability to just come here every day and not worry about getting my arm loose or how it feels or recovery and all that stuff," said Gonzales. The 26-year-old's spring ERA is down to 1.10 over 16.1 innings following Saturday's brilliant effort, one that he produced while wearing a wrap on the right hand that he'd taken a line drive to during his previous start. Gonzales appears set to handle No. 4 pitcher duties for at least the first turn through the rotation this season with Erasmo Ramirez (lat) potentially sidelined. Following Ramirez's return to action, Gonzales would presumably battle fellow lefty Ariel Miranda for the fifth spot in what could ultimately prove to be a difficult decision for manager Scott Servais.
Mar 15 2018Gonzales (hand) is scheduled to start Saturday against the Athletics, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. It appears Gonzales will be able to make his next start on schedule after getting hit by a comebacker and suffering a bruised right hand during his start against the White Sox on Monday. Assuming he gets through Saturday's outing with no issues, Gonzales should be on track to be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 14 2018Gonzales (hand) believes he can make his next scheduled start Saturday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports.Gonzales has reportedly been making good progress after being hit on his right hand by a line drive in Monday's start. The 26-year-old was slated to throw before Wednesday's game and planned to don a glove while doing so. Assuming he continues trending in the right direction, it appears likely that he'll have a chance to take the mound against the split squad of either the Athletics or Angels on Saturday as scheduled.
Mar 13 2018Manager Scott Servais said Tuesday that there are no breaks in Gonzales' hand after he was hit by a comebacker Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. This is good news, as it likely means that the young starter will avoid an extended absence. Gonzales' remains wrapped at this point, but he hopes to continue throwing regularly in an effort to not miss a start. Consider him day-to-day for now with the cautious expectation that he'll be fine for the start of the regular season.
Mar 12 2018Gonzales was drilled in the right hand by a line drive, and was forced to leave the game Monday against the White Sox, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.Gonzales left the game with what the Mariners stated was a right hand contusion. He was spotted walking back to the training facility shortly after exiting. The good news is that the injury is located on his non-throwing hand, although more information regarding the severity should be released in the near future.
Mar 8 2018Gonzales fired four scoreless innings in Wednesday's 7-3 Cactus League loss to the Athletics, allowing two hits and two walks while recording a strikeout. The 26-year-old southpaw has now racked up nine scoreless innings across a trio of starts to open spring training. Gonzales is averaging a strikeout per frame thus far as well, exhibiting much more confidence and efficiency than in last season's rocky 10-appearance (seven starts) stint with Seattle after being acquired in a July trade with the Cardinals. His experience this spring is also a marked departure from his activity level at this time last year, given he was still in the midst of working back from April 2016 Tommy John surgery at that point,Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "Very different," Gonzales said. "I wasn't even in games. I was throwing bullpens, barely. I'm grateful to be able to take the mound and feel good afterward."
Mar 3 2018Gonzales fired three scoreless innings in Friday's 4-2 Cactus League win over the Brewers, allowing three hits while recording four strikeouts.Gonzales has now racked up eight strikeouts over five scoreless spring innings across two appearances, a particularly encouraging start for the former Cardinals first-round selection. Now almost two years removed from April 2016 Tommy John surgery, Gonzales is looking for a fresh start after posting a 6.08 ERA and 1.75 WHIP over 40 innings last season between St. Louis and Seattle. Both Gonzales and the Mariners surely hope that the 11-game sample, which included eight starts, allowed the 26-year-old southpaw to shake off rust and progressively condition his surgically repaired elbow to the rigors of major-league pitching. As per Greg Johns of MLB.com, the stronger joint is already allowing Gonzales to work in an effective cutter alongside his changeup and curve this spring, helping lead to his early success.
Sep 29 2017Gonzales gave up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Friday.Mike Trout touched Gonzales up for his 200th career homer. This caps off a disappointing run at the big-league level for Gonzales in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. He did enjoy success with the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate before being traded, and there is pedigree here, but it's tough to envision Gonzales ever being a big difference maker in fantasy given the amount of contact he allows.
Sep 27 2017Gonzales will start against the Angels in Anaheim on Friday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old will take the place of Mike Leake in the rotation, with the Mariners opting to shut the latter down for the season early due to a minor lat issue. Gonzales secured his first win of the season in his last start, a five-inning stint versus the Rangers on Sept. 12 in which he allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out six.
Sep 12 2017Gonzales (1-1) notched his first win of the season in Tuesday's win over the Rangers. He allowed three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings.Gonzales made his last start on Aug. 2 and was operating on 10 days of rest Tuesday after the Mariners decided to skip his last scheduled start following the acquisition of Mike Leake. Though Gonzales allowed nine baserunners in his five innings of work, the 25-year-old was able to limit the Rangers to three runs and put his team in line for the win. The southpaw's future role is a bit unclear at this time, and though nothing has been officially announced, he'll likely shift back to the bullpen following Tuesday's start.
Sep 10 2017Gonzales has been named the starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Rangers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.Gonzales was bumped from the rotation following his disastrous start against the Orioles on Aug. 28 in which he allowed five runs over 3.1 innings of work. He was able to throw four scoreless innings of relief on Sept. 2 and will be granted a spot start in the place of Andrew Moore on Tuesday against the Rangers. He'll likely head back to a long-relief role following his start.
Sep 3 2017Gonzales could receive another trial in the Mariners' rotation after tossing four scoreless innings in relief in Saturday's victory over the Athletics, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports. After Yovani Gallardo failed to escape the third inning to put the Mariners in an early hole, Gonzales came up big in his first appearance out of the bullpen, striking out five batters while conceding two hits and no walks as Seattle scored a come-from-behind victory. Though Gonzales submitted an ugly 7.40 ERA and 1.98 WHIP over his previous five starts in August with Seattle, his numbers weren't dramatically worse than what Gallardo has posted in a starting role this season, so the Mariners may be motivated to see if the 25-year-old can demonstrate some improvement in a second trial in the rotation. Manager Scott Servais wouldn't commit to starting Gallardo during the Mariners' series with the Angels next weekend, so the team brass will likely think things over during the next couple of days before determining if Gonzales would be a better option.
Sep 1 2017Gonzales will be pushed out of the rotation for at least one turn, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports Friday. The Mariners need to make room for new acquisition Mike Leake in their rotation. As the owner of a 7.40 ERA and a 1.98 WHIP over five starts for the Mariners, Gonzales was the easy choice. Manager Scott Servais suggested there was a chance that Gonzales could return to the rotation, but given his struggles this season, it would be a surprise.
Aug 28 2017Gonzales allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks across 3.1 innings in a no-decision Monday against the Orioles. He struck out two.Gonzales put a constant stream of runners on base in this one, yielding two runs in the second and one in the third before he was chased by a two-run rally in the fourth. He failed to induce a single groundball out and threw first-pitch strikes to just 7 of 19 batters. Gonzales has struggled mightily at the big league level this season, posting an 8.25 ERA and a 1.96 WHIP across 24 innings. He will look to produce a better result Sunday against the Athletics.
Aug 22 2017Gonzales (0-1) took the loss against the Braves on Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings while striking out five. The lefty needed 99 pitches (59 strikes) to record 14 outs but was able to avoid serious damage in a 4-0 defeat. Gonzales has now failed to complete five innings in any of his four starts since joining the Mariners, putting even more pressure on an over-taxed bullpen, and he'll likely shift into a long-relief role once the team's rotation gets healthier. For now, though, he'll take his next turn Monday on the road in Baltimore.
Aug 16 2017Gonzales allowed four runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings while striking out only one Wednesday but didn't factor into the decision in a 7-6 win over the Orioles.Five straight hits in the fifth inning, sandwiched around a wild pitch, spelled the end of Gonzales' day, but Seattle's bats erased the team's deficit in the bottom half of the frame to get the lefty off the hook for a loss. The 25-year-old has yet to complete five innings in any of his three starts since being called up, making him a risky fantasy play heading into his next outing Tuesday on the road against the Braves.
Aug 11 2017Gonzales lasted just 4.1 innings but allowed only one run on four hits and a walk in a no-decision Friday against Los Angeles.Gonzales may have held the Angels to one run, but it looked like the floodgates were ready to burst at any moment. The lefty just couldn't miss bats, as he drew just four swinging strikes in 64 pitches, and he allowed eight fly balls, including a Jefry Marte solo home run. James Paxton's injury means the Mariners need all hands on deck, but Gonzales may not be long for the rotation if he can't find a way to make hitters miss.
Aug 6 2017Gonzales came away with a no-decision Sunday in Kansas City despite allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts over four-plus innings.Seattle surely would have preferred to see more length from Felix Hernadez's (biceps) fill-in with another game scheduled for later in the day, but the team did manage to eke out an 8-7 win after using seven relievers. Gonzales was spotted a 7-0 lead through two innings, but gave two runs back on a Whit Merrifield home run in the third and allowed the first three batters in the fifth to reach base before being pulled. He'll get another chance Friday against the Angels.
Aug 5 2017Gonzales was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and will start Saturday against the Royals.Biceps tendinitis has forced Felix Hernandez to the DL and opened the door for Gonzales to make his Mariners debut. It will be his eighth career start at the major-league level (seven with St. Louis). Gonzales has fared well at Triple-A this year in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, but he allows quite a bit of contact, and that has led to some home run issues against big-league hitters.
Aug 5 2017Gonzales will start the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Royals, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.Saturday's game was postponed and rescheduled as part of a traditional doubleheader. Erasmo Ramirez will follow Gonzales in the nightcap. Gonzales could stick around for a while depending on the results of Felix Hernandez's upcoming evaluation.
Aug 5 2017Gonzales will not make his scheduled start Saturday against the Royals, as the game has been postponed due to rain.Mother Nature will delay Gonzales' Mariners debut, but likely only by one day, as the game is scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday. Gonzales was slated to step in for Felix Hernandez, who hit the DL with biceps tendinitis.
Jul 24 2017Gonzales allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in Triple-A Tacoma's 4-3 win over Sacramento on Monday. He struck out five.Just acquired in the trade that netted the Cardinals promising slugger Tyler O'Neill, Gonzales impressed in a 91-pitch debut for the Rainiers. Factoring in his last six outings with Triple-A Memphis, the 25-year-old southpaw has rattled off seven straight quality starts, and could potentially see time in the big-league rotation before the end of the season.
Jul 21 2017The Mariners acquired Gonzales from the Cardinals on Friday for outfielder Tyler O'Neill.Seattle continues to rebuild its pitching staff, this time giving up a noted prospect instead of the less heralded package they sent to the Marlins for David Phelps. Gonzales' destination within the M's organization wasn't known at the time of the report, but if Seattle calls him up, the left-hander may grab at least a temporary rotation spot, considering Hisashi Iwakuma (shoulder) is at least a few weeks away from returning. Gonzales showed fleeting signs that he could act as a serviceable back-end starter during his St. Louis days, has delivered a decent velocity increase this year and spun a 2.90 ERA in 11 starts for Triple-A Memphis. Still, positive reviews he garnered in his early prospect days have waned, especially as his strikeout rate dipped while facing tougher competition. He's under team control through the 2023 season, though, so Seattle wouldn't mind seeing if the 25-year-old can reach another level. As for 2017, AL-only players could scrape some value out of him, and maybe he'll earn streamer appeal.
Jun 19 2017Gonzales was optioned to Triple-A Memphis following his spot start in Game 2 of a June 13 doubleheader with the Brewers, MLB.com reports. With the Cardinals requiring a sixth starter last week in light of their packed schedule, Gonzales entered the rotation and was tagged for five runs on six hits over 3.1 innings in his season debut. Even if he had been lights out during the appearance, Gonzales likely wouldn't have been in line to stick with the big club, so his demotion to the minors doesn't come as a surprise. The 25-year-old lefty has posted a 2.97 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 36.1 innings with Memphis this season.
Jun 13 2017Gonzales was called up from Triple-A Memphis to start Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. He is serving as the 26th man for the twin bill, meaning he will shuttled back to Memphis following the nightcap. The Brewers rank 13th in MLB with a 97 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers this season, so it is a middling matchup for Gonzales. He has a 3.26 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 24:9 K:BB in 30.1 innings at Triple-A this year. While he profiles as more of a No. 4 or No. 5 starter long term, his changeup is a filthy pitch that can allow him to get on a run when everything is clicking.
Jun 13 2017Gonzales lasted only 3.1 innings in Tuesday's spot start against the Brewers, giving up five runs on six hits (three of them homers) and striking out two.He didn't factor into the decision, and as the 26th man on the roster due to Tuesday's doubleheader, he's ticketed back to Triple-A, though the Cardinals haven't yet announced the move. Gonzales has looked decent in the minors this year, but the 25-year-old has yet to find much success in the big leagues.
May 12 2017Gonzales (elbow) is ready to join Triple-A Memphis' starting rotation, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales has been throwing regularly in extended spring training for multiple weeks without setbacks, and allowed one earned run on two hits over six innings while recording seven strikeouts on May 7 for High-A Palm Beach against Lakeland. The 25-year-old southpaw last pitched in the majors for the Cardinals in 2015, making one start and compiling a 13.50 ERA over 2.2 innings. He's projected to be in line for multiple rehab appearances before his next step is determined.
Mar 13 2017Gonzales was optioned to Triple-A Memphis Monday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. This was expected, as Gonzales is still recovering from Tommy John surgery and hasn't made an appearance in a game all spring. The 25-year-old will start the year in the minors, and after a rehab assignment, he should be an option for the Cardinals sometime around July.
Feb 24 2017Gonzales threw an intense 30-pitch bullpen session Thursday, the latest step in his comeback from April 2016 Tommy John surgery, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 2013 first-round pick threw all fastballs in the session, splitting his workload over two 15-minute rounds. His velocity represented an increase from that of his previous session, and Gonzales will take things up another notch his next time out after a couple of days of rest. The 25-year-old southpaw owns a career 4-2 record, 4.82 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 37.1 major league frames and is aiming for a May return to the mound.
Feb 11 2017Gonzales (elbow) threw from a mound Friday, the first time since his Tommy John surgery last April, Rick Hummel of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.More good news from the recovery standpoint for Gonzales, who said he felt fatigued, but that his arm "feels really good." The left-hander expects to make his first bullpen session next week and hopes to be pitching in the system by May. Gonzales last pitched in 2015 and will likely begin the season in the minors.
Feb 11 2017Gonzales (elbow) threw from a mound Friday, the first time since his Tommy John surgery last April, Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.More good news from a recovery standpoint for Gonzales, who said he felt fatigued, but that his arm "feels really good." The left-hander expects to make his first bullpen session next week and hopes to be pitching in the system by May. Gonzales last pitched in 2015 and will likely begin the season in the minors.
Jan 16 2017Gonzales (elbow) said he's stretched his throwing distance out to 90 feet, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Gonzales underwent Tommy John surgery last April and was sidelined for the entire 2016 season, but is hopeful that he'll be back on the mound for the start of spring training. The Cardinals will likely be extremely cautious with the 24-year-old coming off a major procedure, but if his recovery process goes as anticipated, Gonzales could be facing hitters by the end of camp. Given the year-long layoff, Gonzales figures to open the season in the minor-league ranks before potentially vying for a rotation spot with the big club later in the campaign.
May 26 2015Gonzales' MRI Tuesday revealed no structural concerns in his shoulder and he will rest and begin a strengthening program before being evaluated in a week to 10 days, MLB.com reports.Great news for the Cardinals as this was probably best case scenario. There was obviously some concern that surgery may be required which would have ended his season. The talented young pitcher may be able to return to the mound sooner rather than later.
May 24 2015Gonzales will miss his Monday's scheduled start at Triple-A Memphis after experiencing renewed tightness around his left pectoral muscle, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.Gonzales first suffered the issue in an Apr. 20 start, resulting in him being shut down for almost three weeks. The lefty had since made three starts in a row for Memphis and looked particularly good in his most recent outing, but the injury setback will further delay a potential promotion to the big leagues. He's set for an evaluation in St. Louis on Wednesday, and even if the tightness proves to be a minor concern, Jaime Garcia looks fairly solidified in his role as the Cardinals' fifth starter for the time being.
May 5 2015Gonzales (shoulder) will start for Triple-A Memphis on Saturday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. After narrowly missing out on a major league rotation spot to start the year, Gonzales reported to Memphis and made three starts before landing on the 7-day DL with left shoulder tightness. Gonzales will be on an undisclosed pitch count Saturday in his first start back, but if he makes it through a couple outings without issue, Gonzales could be an option to occupy the No. 5 starter role in St. Louis.
Apr 26 2015Gonzales (shoulder) won't be ready to make a spot start for the Cardinals on Thursday, Jennifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.Gonzales' placement on the disabled list was considered precautionary when it happened, but the fact that he won't be available for the start could indicate there's more to it than that. Either Tim Cooney or Tyler Lyons are expected to receive the start in the place of the injured Adam Wainwright (Achilles).
Apr 22 2015Gonzales was placed on the 7-day disabled list with Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. According to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch, it's a precautionary move due to tightness in his left shoulder.Gonzales will have his next start skipped, but tightness in the throwing shoulder is never something a pitcher wants to have. He remains one of the top candidates for the Cardinals' rotation should an injury occur, but he himself will now have to recover before that would be an option.
Apr 16 2015Gonzales needed 86 pitches to get through four innings in his second start for Triple-A Memphis, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out just one.Gonzales hasn't been as sharp in his first two games with Memphis as he was this spring when he narrowly lost out on the final rotation spot to Carlos Martinez. Gonzales would likely be the Cardinals' first choice to fill a rotation spot should one open up for any extended period of time.
Apr 3 2015The Cardinals optioned Gonzales to Triple-A Memphis on Friday. It was announced earlier Friday that Gonzales' season would begin at Memphis, but the Cardinals made the move official Friday night. Gonzales, who started five games for the Cardinals in 2014, would likely be the top option should the Cardinals need to call up a starter from Memphis.
Apr 3 2015Gonzales will start the year at Triple-A Memphis, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports. The Cardinals have not yet optioned Gonzales off the active roster, but he will head to Memphis to remain stretched out while Carlos Martinez serves as the fifth starter to begin the season. Gonzales, a 23-year-old lefty, allowed just two runs on 11 hits, while walking seven and striking out nine, in 17.1 Grapefruit League innings. He figures to be at or near the top of the list of in-season replacement option for St. Louis.
Mar 30 2015Gonzales went 4.2 innings Sunday against the Mets, giving up just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out two. With Jaime Garcia out of the picture it's now just a two-man race. Both Gonzales and Carlos Martinez should get one more spring training appearance. Based on their performances this spring and their previous track record it has to be considered a pretty close race for who will get the final spot, and we may not know until next weekend.
Mar 28 2015Gonzales will start Sunday's spring training game against the Mets in place of Jaime Garcia (shoulder), the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. With Garcia reporting a setback with his surgically-repaired left shoulder, Gonzales was scratched from his scheduled relief appearance Saturday and will now start Sunday instead. Gonzales has pitched well in Grapefruit League play to this point, allowing just one earned run on eight hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in 12.2 innings. Carlos Martinez will remain stretched out for now with Garcia ailing, but he hasn't been as sharp this spring (3.94 ERA) and Gonzales could further separate himself with a strong outing Sunday.
Mar 18 2015Gonzales continued to impress this spring, going 4.2 innings on Tuesday while allowing just one run and striking out three.Gonzales walked a pair and allowed four hits but looked good again, including an especially impressive strikeout of Giancarlo Stanton. Gonzales probably has the edge on both Carlos Martinez and Jaime Garcia in terms of results thus far this spring, but he'll likely have to convincingly out-pitch both if he wants to land the fifth spot in the Cardinals rotation.
Mar 4 2015Gonzales will start in the Cardinals second game of the spring Friday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales will start after Carlos Martinez and before Jaime Garcia, the three players battling for the final rotation spot. Gonzales is an exciting sleeper and should provide value in most leagues no matter his role, but he still has to be viewed as a long-shot to win the rotation spot as the Cardinals have preferred to give their young starters time in the bullpen before transitioning them to the rotation. The method worked well for Adam Wainwright and was used again last year with Carlos Martinez.
Oct 20 2014Gonzales could start the season in the Cardinals bullpen in 2015 if he fails to make the starting rotation.Gonzales pitched respectably for the Cardinals this season, posting a 4.15 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 34.2 innings in the regular season. He also grabbed a roster spot for the postseason and made six appearances out of the bullpen, allowing three runs over six innings while striking out four. With Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn and John Lackey all likely locked in to the rotation, Gonzales will probably be competing with Michael Wacha, Shelby Miller and Jaime Garcia for the final two spots.
Sep 28 2014Gonzales tossed a scoreless inning with a walk and a strikeout to pick up the victory Friday against the Diamondbacks.Gonzales didn't travel with the team during their previous series due to illness, but he looks to be free of symptoms and ready to be deployed out of the bullpen for the remainder of the regular season.
Sep 22 2014Gonzales has the flu and didn't travel with the Cardinals for their road trip to Chicago, Jim Hayes of FOX Sports Midwest reports. It's unclear if Gonzales' health will improve enough in time for him to join the Cardinals for their final series of the season with the Diamondbacks over the weekend, but with ample bullpen arms available, there's no need for the team to rush him back. Gonzales was reliable when called upon as a spot starter in September, and while he won't be a member of the Cardinals' postseason roster, he could become a permanent member of the rotation at some point in 2015.
Sep 15 2014Gonzales pitched 5.2 innings to pick up the win against Colorado Sunday, allowing just one run on four hits and four walks while fanning nine.Gonzales has been terrific since returning to the club in late August, surrendering just three runs across 15 innings while striking out 17. The lefty is just 22 and has enormous potential. It's not crazy to think he could slot in to the middle of the Cardinals rotation to start the 2015 season.
Sep 12 2014Gonzales will start Sunday in the place of Michael Wacha, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales has already received four starts over the course of the season with the Cardinals. Given that he has pitched mainly out of the bullpen for the Cardinals as of late, it's unclear how many innings or pitches the Cardinals will allow him to throw Sunday.
Sep 2 2014The Cardinals are leaning toward starting Gonzales in place of Justin Masterson on Thursday, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Masterson has been brutal since joining the Cardinals. Gonzalez and Tyler Lyons are being considered for the opening, and it appears Gonzales has the upper hand. Expect a final decision to be announced in the next day or two.
Sep 2 2014Gonzales was recalled from Double-A Springfield on Tuesday.Gonzales will take a spot on the Cardinals' roster in September, and is reportedly the favorite to start in place of the struggling Justin Masterson on Thursday. If he gets the chance and pitches well, it's possible he could keep the spot in the rotation for the rest of September.
Aug 31 2014Gonzales was optioned to Double-A Springfield on Sunday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The 22-year-old Gonzales claimed his first major league win Saturday and helped the Cardinals salvage one game of the doubleheader with the Cubs, as he limited the opposition to one run over six innings. He will return to the Cardinals on Tuesday when Springfield's season has been completed, but it's uncertain whether or not the team will tab him for a starting or long-relief role. Justin Masterson's hold on a rotation spot is hardly steady right now with the veteran owning a 7.20 ERA over six starts with the Cardinals, and it wouldn't be a surprise if the team chose to replace him with either Gonzales or Tyler Lyons at some point in the near future.
Aug 30 2014Gonzales picked up a win on Saturday against the Cubs as he allowed one earned run over six innings, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out five.It was Gonzales's first win of his major league career. The six innings were also a career-high for the 22-year-old. For the season, Gonzales has a 5.40 ERA and an abysmal 15:13 K:BB ratio.
Aug 29 2014Gonzales will start game two of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs, Jim Hayes of Fox Sports Midwest reports.Gonzales will be added to the roster as the extra man before Saturday's games to start in the second game of the doubleheader, but will likely be optioned again after the game due to the roster restrictions.
Aug 26 2014Gonzales pitched six scoreless innings Sunday for Triple-A Memphis, striking out six and allowing just three hits and a walk, there's a good chance he will get the start Saturday for the Cardinals' doubleheader.Gonzales is the only starting pitcher on the 40-man roster that isn't currently on the Cardinals roster so it makes sense. He's been impressive in all but one of his August starts for Memphis.
Jul 7 2014Gonzales was optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.Gonzales struggled over three starts with the Cardinals this season, posting a 7.07 ERA with 10 strikeouts and 11 walks over 14 innings. He'll now return to Triple-A, but may see a chance to start once again down the road in an injury-plagued Cardinals rotation. Tyler Lyons was recalled from Memphis in a corresponding move, and will presumably take over Gonzales' next turn.
Jul 7 2014Gonzales took the loss after struggling through 4.2 innings Sunday against Miami, giving up a run on seven hits and five walks while striking out five.Gonzales needed 109 pitches to record 14 outs. As impressive as he's been in the minors it's pretty clear he's not yet ready for the big leagues.
Jun 26 2014Gonzales will start Tuesday's game against the Giants, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales struggled in his first outing Wednesday against the Rockies, but he'll get at least one more shot, and likely two. Assuming he sticks in the rotation beyond Tuesday, he lines up for a two-start week, with his second turn coming Sunday against the Marlins.
Jun 25 2014Gonzales' contract was purchased from Double-A Springfield on Wednesday, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports. He'll be on the mound to make his major league debut against the Rockies.Gonzales had emerged as one of the top prospects in the Cardinals organization after cruising through 14 starts this season between High-A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield, but the team likely didn't intend to bring him into the major league rotation this quickly. However, injuries to Michael Wacha (shoulder) and Jaime Garcia (shoulder) have left the Cardinals thin on starters, perhaps creating the opportunity for Gonzales to stick around beyond Wednesday's start. In spite of his strong numbers in the minors, he's an inadvisable play in his MLB debut at hitter haven Coors Field.
Jun 25 2014Gonzales struck out three and walked two while giving up five runs on seven hits over five innings in his big league debut Wednesday against the Rockies. He did not factor in the decision, however, as the Cards managed to put five runs on the Colorado bullpen after the rookie's departure. The Rockies were able to get to Gonzales after his first turn through the order, plating all five of their runs against the rookie in the fourth inning. Gonzales is currently lined up for two turns in the rotation next week, first against the Giants on Tuesday in San Francisco before a home start against Miami on July 6.
Jun 23 2014Gonzales will be recalled from Double-A Springfield on Wednesday to make his MLB debut against the Rockies.Gonzales has skyrocketed through the system since being drafted in the first round of the 2013 draft. The Gonzaga University product opened the season at High-A Palm Beach before quickly earning the appointment to Springfield, where he went 3-2 with a 2.33 ERA and 46:10 K:BB ratio over 38.2 innings (seven starts). Though his MLB debut will represent a homecoming of sorts for the Colorado native, he'll face a baptism by fire in pitching in baseball's most hitter-friendly park. Still, if he can make it out of Wednesday's outing with his confidence intact, it looks like Gonzales could enjoy a multi-start run in the rotation after both Michael Wacha (shoulder) and Jaime Garcia (shoulder) were forced to the DL on Sunday.
Apr 10 2014Gonzales was impressive in his first start of the season for High-A Palm Beach, throwing five shutout innings while striking out seven and allowing just three hits.Gonzales was the Cardinals first-round pick last season out of Gonzaga University and should move through the system quickly with performances like this. He's probably a year or twp away from making a full-time contribution to the Cardinals pitching staff, but he could get a call-up this September when the rosters expand to 40.
Apr 1 2014Gonzales will start the season in High-A, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales figures to move quickly through the minors and could see some time with the Cardinals this September.
Mar 10 2014Gonzales was reassigned to minor-league camp after delays in his throwing program due to forearm discomfort, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales has been cleared to restart his throwing program but will not do so with the Cardinals major league camp. The talented lefty will be groomed as a starter and could be competing for a spot on the Cardinals' staff this time next year.
Feb 14 2014Gonzales threw for the first time in spring training Thursday, impressing pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Lilliquist said he was hiding the ball well and showing "pretty good command". The Cardinals' top pick in 2013, Gonzales could breeze through the minors and may make an appearance at the MLB-level in 2014.
Jun 12 2013Gonzales is close to finalizing his first pro contract with the Cardinals, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.Gonzales and the Cardinals have agreed upon a $1.85 million signing bonus. He will likely travel to St. Louis early next week for a physical to complete the deal.
Jun 6 2013The Cardinals selected Gonzales with the 19th overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.Gonzales is a polished product with a fantastic changeup and stellar command of his fastball. He's not overpowering, but with his college background, Gonzales could storm through the minors rather quickly.
